  • Ofori-Atta told the truth; we’ve been paid DKM victims

Customers of the defunct DKM Microfinance Limited have confirmed claims by the government that they have been paid a chunk of their investments that got locked up in the financial institution.

Alexander Obeng, Spokesperson for the affected customers, told Kwabena Prah Jnr. (The Don) on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Friday, 16 November 2018 that although there still remains a backlog to be cleared, the government has paid a huge portion of their investments.

80% of DKM customer claims paid Ofori-Atta

“Under the previous NDC government, the liquidator paid everybody GHS3,500 across the board irrespective of the amount a victim had invested with the firm. When the NPP took over, the liquidator raised the amount from GHS3,500 to GHS10,000”, he said.

He added: “So, it is true as the Finance Minister said yesterday in parliament that some of the monies have been paid. We, however, want the government to also pay the customers of the other companies. The issue is not only about DKM.”

Mr Ofori-Atta told parliament when he delivered the 2019 budget on Thursday, 15 November that in addition to the clean-up exercise undertaken in the banking sector by the Bank of Ghana, the government has also taken steps to settle almost all claims of DKM customers.

“Mr Speaker, you would recall that DKM Diamond Microfinance Limited had its licence revoked in February 2016 with considerable suffering imposed on depositors, without any meaningful response from the previous government.

    “That has significantly changed.

“The official liquidator received 99,858 claims and the validated claims amounted to GHS502 million.

“I would like to inform the country that out of the 99,858 claims, 79,708 (80 per cent) have been settled and depositors have been paid.

“The government has set aside funds at the Bank of Ghana to pay the remaining 20 per cent of depositors upon validation.

“An additional 12,612 claims have been fully provided for, but the customers have not as yet been able to show proof of deposit.”

  • Quit marriage if partner disagrees with your acting career – Christiana Awuni

“Actresses should divorce their husbands if they do not agree with their line of work”. Christiana Awuni shared with Pulse.com.gh.

In an interview yesterday, November 13, the actress said that “If you are an actress and your husband does not support your career or roles quit the relationship or marriage”.

Christiana shared stories in an interview some time ago about how her ex husband used to disapprove of her acting and tried severally to let her stay at home as a housewife so when asked in the recent interview with Pulse.com.gh she spoke earnestly on the matter.

According to the actress the partner who understands your role as an actress is the one she advises her fellow young actresses to look for in a man because that is the only way the marriage can go far.

She continued by saying “There are young actresses that like to show a lot of skin and when that happens and your partner does not agree it will be wise to break up with your partner. If you like to show some skin and your partner does not agree definitely one will have to go before the other.”

She added that it will be appropriate for an actor or actress to introduce their work to his or her partner. The partner has to visit the set to see how things are done to reduce insecurities. “Staring at the TV and going to see things yourself are different things” she said.

Christiana mentioned later in the interview that she and most actresses that had unstable marriages because of their work are not to be blamed for their divorce.

  • Japan’s cyber-security minister has ‘never used a computer’

Japan’s new cyber-security minister has dumbfounded his country by saying he has never used a computer.

Yoshitaka Sakurada made the admission to a committee of lawmakers.

“Since I was 25 years old and independent I have instructed my staff and secretaries. I have never used a computer in my life,” he said, according to a translation by the Kyodo news agency.

The 68-year-old was appointed to his post last month.

His duties include overseeing cyber-defence preparations for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

A politician from the opposition Democratic Party, Masato Imai, whose question had prompted the admission, expressed surprise.

“I find it unbelievable that someone who is responsible for cyber-security measures has never used a computer,” he said.

Read: Government would provide funding to address cyber security President

But Mr Sakurada responded that other officials had the necessary experience and he was confident there would not be a problem.

However, his struggle to answer a follow-up question about whether USB drives were in use at the country’s nuclear power stations caused further concern.

The disclosure has been much discussed on social media where the reaction has been a mix of astonishment and hilarity, with some noting that at least it should mean Mr Sakurada would be hard to hack.

  • FDA has not approved any sex and body enhancement products

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) says it has not approved any sexual or body enhancement products for sale in the country. It has therefore warned the public to desist from patronizing any of such in the form of beauty, body or sexual enhancement products.

Addressing a press conference in Kumasi, Mrs Nora Narkie Terlabie, the Ashanti Regional Head of FDA, said the Authority could not guarantee the health and safety of users of these unapproved products.

She mentioned some of the popular brands of the body enhancement products as “breast lifting fast cream”, “soft curve booty”, “hip cream”, “bobaraba cream”, “yodi capsule” and “penis enlargement capsule” Others are “lady killer”, “viamax”, “black-K king kong”, “virgin cream”, “charm sex” and “max man”., all meant to excite sexual pleasure .

Mrs Terlabie said preliminary investigations have revealed that these products were brought into the country from Nigeria and that the Authority was currently working with the law enforcement agencies to clamp down on the importation and sale of the unapproved products on the Ghanaian market. She said the labels of the products do not have any information as required by the Ghana Labelling Regulation, LI 1541.

Mrs. Terlabie expressed worry about the possible devastating harm the chemicals in the products could cause to users on ingestion, since some were swallowed and others smeared on the skin.

The use of the products could cause pressure on critical internal organs such as the liver and kidneys as such organs had to work extra hard to eliminate the toxins in the products, from the body. They can also result in hormonal imbalances, increase risk of blood clotting, increase in blood lipid levels, heart problems, among other harm.

Mrs Larbie indicated that the Authority had over the years conducted a number of activities aimed at ridding the markets of the dangerous products, but it appeared there was “still a demand for them and as such some unscrupulous members of our society still manage and bring them into the country”.

  • Patching of Tema Motorway begins

Patching of potholes on the 19-kilometre Tema Motorway has commenced. The remedial works, estimated at GH¢2.4 million, involve the patching of potholes with bitumen materials in the inner carriage of the highway.

When this reporter used the road yesterday afternoon, workers of the construction firm carrying out the works, Sesecom Limited, were spotted using bitumen to seal potholes on parts of the concrete overlay near the Community 18 section of the road.

Read: Tema Motorway to undergo major rehabilitation

One of the construction workers the Daily Graphic spoke to said the works started about 10 a.m.

    Congestion

It was also observed that the patching of the road had resulted in a traffic jam that stretched over four kilometres on the Accra-bound section of the motorway.

Motorists using that section had a tough time making the journey.

Read: Stonebwoy urges government to fix potholes on Tema motorway

They, as well as passengers, asked why the patching was being done during rush hours, as the situation caused much inconvenience to them.

Some commuters blamed those who awarded the contract for selecting the busiest hours of the day for the patching works to be carried out.

A driver, who gave his name as John Antwi, said such works ought to have been done at night and on weekends to avoid creating discomfort for commuters.

It was learnt, however, that to help prevent traffic jams during the patching works, the contractor had been asked to work after 10 a.m. each day; that is, after the morning rush hours.

When the Daily Graphic arrived at the site near the bridge close to the Abattoir section of the motorway, there was no police presence to manage the traffic situation.

However, the contractor had mounted road signs at vantage points to direct traffic, while some of the workers served as traffic wardens to control the situation.

    Vital infrastructure

The Accra-Tema Motorway is the busiest highway in Ghana and one of the important roads in the West African sub-region.

Records show that about 35,000 cars pay tolls daily to use the route and that generates about GHc40,000 daily or GHc14.6 million annually.

The motorway forms an integral part of the Trans-Africa Highway stretching from Lagos through Lomé, Accra and Abidjan to Dakar.

Today, the 19-kilometre highway is riddled with potholes on both sides, a condition that causes discomfort and frustration to its users.

In addition to that, iron rods that were used to fortify the concrete surface are exposed at some sections due to the deterioration of the road.

The government has, meanwhile, stated that major rehabilitation works on the motorway are scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2019 and will involve the expansion of the carriageways and the provision of interchanges to ease travel time on the road.

  • Govt to issue licences for cylinder recirculation project

The Chief Executive Officer for the National Petroleum Authority, Mr. Alhassan Tampuli, has said government is determined to issue licences to some Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) companies and distributors in 2019 to be at the forefront of the cylinder recirculation module.

This, he said, will help increase job creation in the country, since the exercise will have to engage more than 4,500 jobs in the country when it is being implemented.

According to him, fuel stations situated at high risk areas will be converted into distribution outlets for filled cylinders where customers can go and exchange with an initial deposit to secure a cylinder, while the low-risk refilling plant will supply auto-gas under safety measures.

He said this during a press conference in Tamale, which was aimed at apprising the media on some policies of the authority including the cylinder recirculation model, petroleum pricing, and Safety standards.

“Under this system, no consumer owns a gas cylinder but goes for a filled one at the certified points and leaves the empty one for refilling; meanwhile, new users will have to also pay a deposit before taking the filled cylinder to enable the outfit purchase new cylinders for the project,” Mr. Tampuli explained.

“We are going to have bottling plants, and each plant will have not less than forty employees working at the site,” he stated.

According to him, there will be LPG cylinder trucks which move with the filled cylinders from place to place to, so as to make gas accessible to consumers and ease the stress consumers go through in accessing gas for domestic use.

Speaking on some safety measures, Mr. Tampuli cautioned drivers to switch-off their car engines at fuel pumps when refilling their vehicles. He said this will avoid fire sparking at the fuel station.

He further expressed worries about the spate of fuel fires in the country, and advised fuel stations to desist from discharging fuel after 6pm. He said it is unsafe to discharge fuel when darkness falls, because it is difficult to escape in case of any explosion.

He therefore called on the media to serve as agents of change in the community by educating the populace about fuel safety on their various platforms.

“Each and every one has to make it a responsibility to report any unsafe occurrence at fuel stations, because if there is any incident it may affect our loved ones,” he added.

He said the current number of lecturers will not be able to attend to the needs of the expected increase in student population if nothing is done to augment their work, observing “already we are overworking ourselves because of the numbers”.

Dr. Agbanu said the current lecturer population in the public universities nationwide is pegged at 3 lecturers per 500 students, a situation he says impedes academic progress.

  • Waste not: South Africa makes world’s first human urine brick

One day, when nature calls, your urine could be put to better use than to be flushed down the loo.

Instead it could be a key ingredient in the construction of a greener office or new home.

In one of the latest innovations in the search for eco-friendly building materials, South African university researchers have created bricks using human urine.

The first of their kind in the world, the bio-bricks hold out the prospect of a sustainable alternative to standard clay and concrete bricks, they hope.

The prototypes have been “grown” from urine using a technique somewhat similar to the natural formation of seashells, taking six to eight days to form.

The groundbreaking invention is the brainchild of two University of Cape Town students and a lecturer.

With a grant from a government-run Water Research Council, the feasibility study was launched last year using synthetic urea. And then the study escalated to using human urine.

“I was always curious to know why don’t we use urine to do the same thing,” Dyllon Randall, the lecturer who supervised one of the two students, told AFP.

“The simple answer is: ‘Yes, we can’.”

A year later they successfully produced their first bio-brick in a laboratory.

Using a natural process known as microbial carbonate precipitation, they mix urine, sand and bacteria to make the brick.

The research is still in its early days. So far, it requires up to 30 litres (eight US gallons) of urine to make just one brick — with the urine provided by male students at the university via a special urinal.

“We basically made the first bio-brick from real urine,” Randall said.

“This process is amazing because essentially what we’ve done is we grew bricks at room temperature.”

The first three bricks are on display. They are grey weighty blocks and indistinguishable from any standard limestone.

    – Mould –

Suzanne Lambert, a civil engineering Masters student, marvels at how the team copied “nature’s natural processes” to create a sustainable way of building.

“This process mimics the way coral is formed and the natural processes produce a cement,” she said.

Conventional bricks or clay-fired bricks are manufactured in kilns, where they are dried at 1,400 degrees Celsius (2,500 degrees Fahrenheit), a process that causes large emissions of carbon dioxide.

In contrast, the bio-brick is “grown” through loose sand seeded with bacteria that produce an enzyme called urease.

The urease reacts with the urea in urine to produce a cement-like compound that bonds with the sand.

The product can be moulded into any shape and dries at ambient temperatures — no ovens, no greenhouse-gas emissions.

“We take something that is considered a waste stream such as urine and use it in a completely sustainable process,” said Randall.

And for those concerned about the odour of urine permeating from the walls, the good news is that the brick does not smell. The strong ammonia smell that comes from urine dissipates after a few days of drying.

Fellow researcher Vukheta Mukhari said the strength of the brick can be tailored to specific building requirements but the ones they have produced so far are “as strong as common bricks you find on the market”.

Bio-bricks are already manufactured in the US, but they use synthetic forms of urine.

These, though, are the first to use natural human waste.

Will the bio-brick one day supplant standard clay or concrete counterparts?

The key factor is price, but at this very early stage of development there has been no attempt to research costs.

“We are still far from actually commercialising this as a full scale system,” Randall cautioned, but said there was plenty of scope for gains in efficiency.

“At the moment we need between 20 to 30 litres to make one standard brick. That does sound like a lot, but remember that about 90 percent of urine is actually water,” said Randall.

“We are looking at reducing the amount of urine we are requiring to make one brick, and I’m sure within the next few years will have much better results”.

  • Thai child fighting culture sparks debate after 13-year-old’s death

Thousands of child boxers compete in Thailand’s traditional martial art with dreams of belts, glory and prize money — but the death of a 13-year-old has lit up a sensitive debate over whether competitors start too young.

Centuries-old Muay Thai — known as the art of eight limbs for the different ways opponents can strike each other with knees, fists, kicks, and elbows — is the country’s de facto national sport and remains a source of immense pride.

But new research within Thailand suggests that the earlier Muay Thai boxers begin, the more prone they are to a range of injuries.

Lawmakers under the country’s military leaders have also drafted revamped legislation that would bar children under 12 from competing in the contact sport.

The push has gathered new momentum in light of the death of 13-year-old Anucha Tasako, who died from a brain haemorrhage last weekend after his similarly aged opponent struck him with multiple blows to the head at a charity fight near Bangkok.

Anger erupted on social media where footage of the critical moments of the bout was uploaded.

Deputy prime minister Prawit Wongsuwan instructed the sports ministry to review the legislation, which also requires parental consent for those between 12 and 15 and “physical safety measures”.

“The competitions must have appropriate, protective gear from the arena manager,” Prawit said according to a spokesperson.

    – Brain cell damage –

It is common for Muay Thai fighters to start young and Anucha embarked on his career when he was eight years old.

He grew up in the northeastern province of Kalasin and after his parents parted ways he spent time with a relative who had a Muay Thai gym.

Gripped by the sport, Anucha moved to Bangkok to stay with an uncle and train.

By the time he got to the charity match in Samut Prakan on Saturday he had fought 170 times, according to local media reports.

Critics point to alleged child exploitation as gamblers bet on bouts or promoters shave off prize money.

But it is the unseen health consequences that have received the most attention.

A five-year study from 2012 by the Child Safety Promotion and Injury Prevention Center at Ramathibodi Hospital carried out MRI scans on the brains of 335 child boxers and compared them with 252 non-boxers of the same ages.

Hospital director Adisak Plitponkarnpim said it was “clear” that child boxers suffered more brain cell damage and ruptures, and also had lower IQs.

“Their young age increases the damage because their skull and muscles are not yet fully developed.”

He said that accumulative injuries could put them at higher risk for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases as adults.

    – ‘Chance to dream’ –

Coaches, gym owners and older fighters have mixed feelings about the draft legislation.

Thailand’s champions who have climbed out of Muay Thai and into success in western boxing circles also honed their skills as youngsters.

Wanheng Menayothin, the WBC minimumweight champion who surpassed Floyd Mayweather’s 50-0 record this year, moved to Bangkok at age 12 to train.

Tawee Umpornmaha also started fighting at 12 and went on to win a 1985 Olympic silver medal.

Some also feel the discussion around Muay Thai unfairly stigmatises a sport that is easier to access for the South East Asian nation’s impoverished youth than more expensive sports such golf or tennis.

“For a lot of children, Muay Thai is a path out of poverty,” said a Muay Thai gym owner who did not want to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Besides giving children a sense of purpose, he said it also offers them “the chance to dream of a future far beyond the sport”.

The tensions are embodied in Anucha’s coach, Somsak Deerujijaroen, who runs a gym and trains his son.

“If the laws fully prevent child boxing, Thailand will not have Muay Thai masters. It will be the end of it. We will pass on the championships to foreigners,” he said at the funeral for Anucha, adding that rules on protective headgear for youth made more sense.

But he feels conflicted after the incident on Saturday and blames himself.

“I don’t want do the boxing gym anymore,” Somsak said, standing near Anucha’s coffin, where the young boxer’s favourite black-and-red boxing shorts were slung over a chair.

“One of my own kids who is eight years old has also been trained. But after this, I don’t want him to do it anymore.”

  • Punch-up in Sri Lankan parliament

Sri Lanka’s parliament descended into chaos on Thursday with MPs swinging punches and throwing projectiles a day after legislators voted the prime minister out of office.

“It was difficult to make out immediately who was hitting whom, but several were hurt, but not seriously,” an official in parliament told AFP. “The speaker adjourned the House temporarily.”

One legislator was hospitalised, he added.

Sri Lanka has endured nearly three weeks of crisis after President Maithripala Sirisena fired Ranil Wickremesinghe as prime minister and replaced him with Mahinda Rajapakse on October 26.

Sirisena then dissolved the strategically important Indian Ocean nation’s parliament and called snap elections.

However these moves were suspended by the Supreme Court earlier this week pending an investigation.

On Wednesday parliament reconvened and lawmakers approved a motion of no-confidence in Rajapakse’s cabinet, also passing motions declaring Sirisena’s moves as illegal.
