  • Pakistan acquits Christian woman on death row

A Pakistani court has overturned the death sentence of a Christian woman convicted of blasphemy, a case that has polarised the nation.

Asia Bibi was convicted in 2010 after being accused of insulting the Prophet Muhammad in a row with her neighbours.

She always maintained her innocence, but has spent most of the past eight years in solitary confinement.

The landmark ruling has already set off protests by hardliners who support strong blasphemy laws.

There is a heavy police presence at the Supreme Court in Islamabad as many feared violence could break out.

Read: Tunis attack: Suicide bomber was jobless graduate

Chief Justice Saqib Nisarm, who read out the ruling, said Asia Bibi could walk free from jail in Sheikupura, near Lahore, immediately if not wanted in connection with any other case.

She was not in court to hear the ruling.

What was Asia Bibi accused of?

The trial stems from an argument Asia Bibi, whose full name is Asia Noreen, had with a group of women in June 2009.

They were harvesting fruit when a row broke out about a bucket of water. The women said that because she had used a cup, they could no longer touch it, as her faith had made it unclean.

Prosecutors alleged that in the row which followed, the women said Asia Bibi should convert to Islam and that she made three offensive comments about the Prophet Muhammad in response.

She was later beaten up at her home, during which her accusers say she confessed to blasphemy. She was arrested after a police investigation.

What did the Supreme Court say?

The judges said the prosecution had “categorically failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt”.

The case was based on flimsy evidence, they said, and proper procedures had not been followed. The alleged confession was delivered in front of a crowd “threatening to kill her”.

The ruling heavily referenced the Koran and Islamic history. It ended with a quote from the Hadith, the collected sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, which calls for non-Muslims to be treated kindly.

Why is this case so divisive?

Islam is Pakistan’s national religion and underpins its legal system. Public support for the strict blasphemy laws is strong.

Hardline politicians have often backed severe punishments, partly as a way of shoring up their support base.

But critics say the laws have often been used to get revenge after personal disputes, and that convictions are based on thin evidence.

Most of those convicted are Muslims, but since the 1990s, scores of Christians have been convicted.

No-one has ever been executed, but some people accused of the offence have been lynched or murdered.

Read: German former nurse admits killing 100 patients

Asia Bibi, who has four children, was the first woman to be sentenced to death under the laws.

Asia Bibi’s case gained even more prominence after the assassination of Salman Taseer, the governor of Punjab province. He had called for her to be pardoned and for the blasphemy laws to be overhauled.

He was shot dead in broad daylight in early 2011 by his security guard, Mumtaz Qadri, a supporter of the strict blasphemy laws. Qadri was sentenced to death and executed in 2016 but remains a hero to many.

Internationally, Asia Bibi’s conviction has been widely condemned as a breach of human rights.

    What happens now?

There are fears that there could be a violent response to her acquittal.

As with her previous trials and appeals, large crowds gathered outside the court in Islamabad on Wednesday demanding her conviction be upheld and the execution carried out.

She has been offered asylum by several countries and was expected to leave the country if acquitted.

Her daughter, Eisham Ashiq, had previously told the AFP news agency that if she were released: “I will hug her and will cry meeting her and will thank God that he has got her released.”

But the family said they feared for their safety and would likely have to leave Pakistan.

  • Man United players still behind Mourinho – Rooney

Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United’s players still want to perform for Jose Mourinho despite their struggles this season.

United are battling in eighth place in the Premier League nine points behind Manchester City and Liverpool and some of their displays have led to Mourinho coming under fire.

However, they are unbeaten in three league games, including wins over Newcastle United and Everton.

Rooney, who won five league titles and a Champions League during a glittering 13-year career at United, said the players were still behind Mourinho.

Read: Man Utd to contest Mourinho charge

“Obviously they are going through a difficult period at the minute but Jose Mourinho is very experienced and I think some players have to do a little bit better,” D.C. United star told BBC Sport.

“Hopefully they can turn their form around, win a few more games and keep the pressure on the top of the table and get back up there, which is where we all want to see them.

“In my experience, I have never seen or heard of a player not wanting to play in the game because they have had a falling out with the manager.

“I don’t think as a player you could do that, you’ve got to respect the club and the fans and also respect your team-mates.

Rooney will have his own worries on Thursday when D.C. United host the Columbus Crew in a one-off MLS playoff matchup.

Should D.C. win, the club will move on to face either Atlanta United or the New York Red Bulls in the Eastern Conference semi-finals.

Mrs. Freda Prempeh, a Deputy Minister of Works and Housing on Monday, inaugurated three mechanized boreholes for some farming communities in the Tano North Municipality of the Brong-Ahafo Region.

The Deputy Minister who is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North Constituency said Stanbic Bank supported her to construct the boreholes to provide potable drinking water for the residents of Mamponteng, Dedeboa and Twoaho communities.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered that residents in the beneficiary communities suffered from outbreak of water-borne diseases because they depended on and shared streams with stray animals.

Mrs. Prempeh assured deprived communities in the Constituency of her willingness to ensure that they were provided with basic social amenities and facilities to make life comfortable for them.

The MP later supplied second-hand clothing and footwear to school children in the communities and advised parents to support their children to study higher in education.

The three beneficiary communities have a common challenge of lack of electricity, health facility and basic school and therefore appealed to the MP for the provision of those social amenities to enhance their standard of living.

Mr. Francis Ayisi, a Bank Manager, Stanbic Bank, Accra, advised the communities to take proper care of the facilities by ensuring regular maintenance.

He said the Bank was determined to ensure that life was comfortable to especially people in rural areas, hence, it was implementing several corporate social responsibility programmes to improve on the socio-economic livelihood of the people.

  • Iran Clinic to train 10,000 first aid volunteers in Greater Accra Region

Most road accident victims, sudden heart attack sufferers and accidental poisoning victims die annually as a result of the lack of first aid interventions.

To arrest this situation, the Iran Clinic, in collaboration with the Ghana Red Cross Society, has embarked on a project to train 10,000 first aid volunteers in the Greater Accra Region.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has, therefore, been signed between the two organisations to that effect.

    Participants

As part of the training, participants are taken through various first aids, ranging from the techniques of reviving victims who have collapsed or suffered a heart attack with cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.

They are also being taken through techniques of bandaging and controlling bleeding of accident victims with aching or broken bones and others who have suffered minor injuries, as well as the handling of children who have drunk poisonous substances.

    Project

Speaking to the Daily Graphic in Accra, the Medical Director of Iran Clinic, Dr Masoud Maleki Birjandi, said the project formed part of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) policies to train one person per household in handling life saving interventions.

He said the training, which was geared towards helping to reduce untimely deaths, injuries and impact from disasters, would last for one and half years.

Dr Birjandi said the training would be extended to other parts of the country after one and half years and the best participant selected for further training in Iran.

He said in order to make the programme affordable to all, Iran Clinic and the Ghana Red Cross were subsidising the cost.

He, therefore, urged both individuals and organisations to participate in the programme.

And Ayew felt that Palace deserved more for their efforts against the Gunners, having battled back from 2-1 down to claim a point in the London derby.

“I think we deserved three points but that’s part of the game. We had some unlucky moments but they’re part of the game too.

“A point is good, good for the confidence. We’ll see what will happen next.”

He has played six times for Palace in the Premier League this season, with his latest appearance coming against Arsenal on Sunday in the 2-2 draw at Selhurst Park.

But the 27-year-old says he is not concerned by his lack of goals since joining the club, with the on-loan man vowing to keep trying to help the team.

  • NDC security man assaults journalist at conference

A member of the NDC security is reported to have assaulted a journalist at the party’s just ended youth and women conference at Gomoa fetteh in the Central Region.

The journalist, who was punched in the face by the NDC macho man sustained a deep cut on the mouth, immediately drawing the attention of some good samaritans to intervene.

But for the timely response of the ambulance service, the plight of the Top FM journalist, Emmanuel Sackey, could have worsened.

Read: Mahama apologises to assaulted journalist

Narrating his ordeal to the media, Emmanuel Sackey said he was hit by the security guard after he tried to get closer to the newly elected Deputy Youth Organiser of the NDC, Edem Agbanyo for an interview after the event.

He was allegedly punched by the security detail whose identity is yet to be ascertained.

The assault comes at a time when calls have been made to prevent the brutalities against journalists.

Multimedia reporter Parker Wilson, was on Monday also assaulted in line of duty by a member of the security detail of Ex-President John Mahama.
He was allegedly slapped by the security detail whose identity is yet to be ascertained.

The assault left the journalist visibly bruised with part of his face swollen and his right eye teary with pain.

Other journalists including Latif Iddris and Kwadwo Mensah Abroampa have equally had a fair said of the brutalities with little to compensate.

Despite several calls from Civil Society Organizations and other institutions to put an end to these assaults, it appears the attacks still continue.

Already some Ghanaians feel the attack against journalists is an attack on democracy and free speech in the country.

Until a clear-cut law is designed to protect journalists like Emmanuel Sackey, the assault could render him frustrated, unsecured, and timid throughout his entire career as a journalist.

  • Daniel Amartey likely out for the season?

Leicester City’s Ghanaian defender Daniel Amartey looks set to miss the remainder of the season after suffering a horror ankle break on Saturday.

The 23-year-old was stretchered off the field in the final minutes of the 1-1 draw against West Ham United, and has since undergone surgery.

Amartey has taken to Twitter to declare the operation a success and says he “will be back stronger”, but the injury represents a major setback for him.

Amartey has established himself as a key member of the Leicester back-four, featuring in nine of the 10 Premier League games so far.

In addition to that, he has become an important player for the Black Stars, who need to win against Ethiopia in Addis Ababa next month to keep their hopes alive of reaching an eighth straight Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Meanwhile, Amartey only learnt of the tragic death of Leicester chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha after coming out of surgery.

“Came out of a successful surgery, but devastating news about the demise of our chairman,” Amartey said on Instagram.

“A generous man, to whom @LCFC owes everything. I’m sure, you’re in a much better place. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and the families of the victims affected by this tragedy.”

  • No increases in transport fares GPRTU clarifies

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), have asked its members and the public to disregard a purported increase in transport fares.

A group of drivers calling itself the Committed Drivers Association announced a 20 percent increase in fares yesterday [October 29, 2018]. This according to the association is due to the increase in the cost of fuel.

However, the GPRTU and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council, GRTCC, who lead discussions with the Transport Ministry for fare increases, say there is no such increase in fares.

Speaking to Citi Business News, an Executive Member of the GPRTU, Edward Hoffman, said there is no justification for an increase in transport fares.

Read: Transport fares to remain unchanged

He pointed out that there are modalities for calculating and announcing transport fare increases.

“One of the major components in increasing transport fares is to check if cumulatively the prices of fuel has increased by 10 percent. Our checks and calculations show that fuel prices have cumulatively increased by just 7 percent”.

He argued that “there is no need for increasing transport fares at this time”

Mr. Hoffman urged the general public not to accept any increases in transport fares since the GPRTU and the Ministry of Transport are the main stakeholders mandated to announce transport fare increases.

Read: GPRTU urges drivers to remain calm over fuel price hike

Meanwhile, the Ghana Committed Drivers Association has defended its decision to increase transport fares effective Monday, October 29.

Chairman of the Association, Charles Danson, insisted the association is an independent body and not bound by decisions of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union nor the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council, hence their decision to increase fares due to recent hikes in fuel prices.

He explains that the association will go ahead with its planned 20% increase in fares despite calls from the GPRTU not to increase the fares.

Some of them who spoke to 3news.com on condition of anonymity say they will not hesitate to picket since that appears to be the only language government understands.

“Our year group is trying as much as possible not to allow what happened last year to repeat itself… But it seems as usual the government only listens to picketing,” one of them said.

Read: No financial clearance; health minister responds to nurses posting

The doctors said they do not have the slightest idea as to when the government will give the financial clearance for them to be engaged, noting that uncertainty amounts to a waste of their time.

“We definitely could have added value to ourselves academically and clinically if we were in the known as to how many months we should stay home before been employed” another one said.

  • Only 30% of Ghanaians have bank accounts; it’s worrying – Morgan Asiedu

HR, Legal and Compliance Executive Director of Ecobank, Morgan Asiedu has expressed worry about the low penetration rate of banking and financial institutions in the country.

Morgan Asiedu suggested that financial institutions in the banking industry have about 1000 branches across the country but has only captured about 30% of the country’s population.

Read: Financial Institutions must be trusted for the economy to thrive

Referring to statistics from the Central Bank, the HR, Legal and Compliance Executive Director intimated that, more must be done, to reverse the trend and make it more convenient for people to access financial services.

Read: Government to bailout savings and loans companies with about GH¢10bn

To achieve this, Morgan Asiedu asserted that his outfit has introduced mobile apps to facilitate convenient banking and financial services for Ghanaians.

This he remarked was been done mainly by employing the use of technology that can be used by any kind of device.

    Read: GCB expands international operations

“Statistics from the BoG indicate that the banking sub-sector remains rapidly expanding and dynamic segment of the Ghanaian financial services landscape. Currently, the number of universal banks in the country has reduced from 36 to mainly 30 through the merger of five banks in the country and the liquidation of two. In addition, Ghana has numerous Rural and Community Banks, Non-Bank Financial Institutions and Microfinance Institutions. Despite having over 1, 000 physical branches in total for universal banks, the number of bank accounts in Ghana is estimated to cover only 30% of the Ghanaian population” Morgan Asiedu disclosed.

    2-day training of journalists

Morgan Asiedu made these remarks as he addressed journalists at a two-day forum supported by Ecobank.

The forum for business journalists is aimed at bringing members up to date with current trends and improve their knowledge on key concepts in the field that influence their work.

Ecobank has supported the group, Journalists for Business Advocacy (JBA) over the past three years particularly with the organisation of the annual workshop.

Morgan Asiedu hinted that the support for the activities of the Journalists for Business Advocacy is a means of contributing to the media development and enhancement of their role of informing, educating and entertaining the public.

Close to 150 journalists across the country have benefitted the workshop.

    Collaborate to achieve more

In his speech, General Secretary of Ghana Journalists Association, Kofi Yeboah challenged journalists to eschew the spirit of selfishness and learn to collaborate.

He was of the view that despite the media house one belongs to, there is the need in some cases to collaborate with fellow colleagues on projects for greater outcomes and better impact in the long run.

Kofi Yeboah questioned the rationale behind individual work that yields little or no results and falls short of standards and quality work.

He thus urged journalists gathered to be focused in their stories and build each work around a specific theme.

  • Zimbabwe to continue with multi currency regime – President

Zimbabwe will continue to operate a multi currency system despite the current economic crisis, president Emmerson Mnangagwa has reiterated.

The president, speaking on Monday, at a breakfast meeting with the business community also urged the public to not panic and offload their Real Time gross Settlement, RTGS, balances.

“I fully know what is going on in the country. We as government should listen to you. The financial sector is highly sensitive and thrives on highest levels of trust.

“Government is working day and night to stabilize the economy. The multi-currency system is here to stay. RTGS balances and bond notes are safe as monetary instruments. No need for pressure to exchange them,” he said.

Read: Angela Merkel to step down as German chancellor in 2021

A multi-currency regime is basically a situation where a country adopts other currencies in addition to its own. The measure was introduced in 2009 and is credited with stemming hyperinflation, which made the local currency worthless.

Zimbabwe currently has the United States dollar, the South African rand and local bond notes in its basket of currencies. The Botswana pula and British pound have in times past been accepted as legal tender.

The current position is consistent with what he stated in his state of the nation address last month. In the said address, he said the multi currency system will be abandoned only after the factors that necessitated them had been corrected.

“These economic fundamentals are yet to be met to justify introduction of our own currency,” Mnangagwa told lawmakers at the opening of the ninth parliament.

He spoke about plans including the negotiation of lines of credit worth $500 million to meet foreign currency requirements for business. Zimbabwe is also working to clear its $1.8 billion arrears to the World Bank and the African Development Bank.

The country is currently suffering from shortage of basic commodities which has largely led to long queues. The president added that he was aware that some manufacturers were deliberately holding back products from retailers.

  • Angela Merkel to step down as German chancellor in 2021

Germany’s Angela Merkel has said she will step down as chancellor in 2021, following recent election setbacks.

“I will not be seeking any political post after my term ends,” she told a news conference in Berlin.

She also said she would not seek re-election as leader of the centre-right CDU party in December. She has held the post since 2000.

The CDU was severely weakened in Sunday’s poll in the state of Hesse, the latest in a series of setbacks.

Both the CDU and its coalition partners, the Social Democrats, were 10 percentage points down on the previous poll there – even though they remain in power in Hesse.

The election comes just weeks after Mrs Merkel’s Bavarian sister party, the CSU, suffered huge losses in a state parliament vote.

Parties like the Greens and the far-right AfD have grown in national support following the 2017 general election, as backing for the major centre parties has waned.

Mrs Merkel said she took “full responsibility” for poor performance, and made clear she would not handpick her successor as party leader.

    Merkel’s long goodbye

By Jenny Hill, BBC’s Berlin correspondent

Angela Merkel did her best to maintain her famous poker face but at times she looked rather sad as she announced what amounted to an official – albeit drawn-out – farewell to German politics.

Read: Lion Air crash: Boeing 737 plane crashes in sea off Jakarta

She has always insisted that if she is to lead Germany, she must also lead her party.

The announcement is intended to silence critics in her party and win back the voters who have deserted the CDU in favour of parties like AfD and the Greens, but it also reflects her dwindling grip on power.

Much depends on her successor as party leader. If it is a loyalist – like Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer – Germany might see a smooth transition to a new chancellor, possibly allowing Mrs Merkel to see out her term.

But the vultures are circling. Already an old rival, Friedrich Merz, has announced his candidacy. If one of Mrs Merkel’s adversaries prevails as party leader, her chancellorship becomes uncomfortable and possibly untenable.

  • Government to bailout savings and loans companies with about GH¢10bn

Deputy Finance Minister, Charles Adu Boahen, says just as it did for the distressed commercial banks, government intends to bailout savings and loans and other microfinance institutions rumoured to also be on their last legs.

A source close to an assessment the central bank is doing said the taxpayer could be looking at coughing up another GH¢10 billion or more, just as in the case of the banks, although the Deputy Finance Minister said the World Bank has already pledged to support the process with “half a billion cedis.”

Speaking to the B&FT on the sidelines of the recent World Bank/IMF Annual Meetings in Indonesia, the Deputy Finance Minister, said: “We have asked the Bank of Ghana to do an assessment of exactly what they think the potential gap is, how many institutions are healthy, how many are unhealthy; so, we have an idea of exactly how much financing we need.

Read: BoG to take action on Savings & Loans

“The World Bank has been kind enough to increase their DPO [Development Policy Operations], with the intention of assisting us by providing some financing of up to half a billion cedis to assist in this bailout resolution. In addition to that, government will make available the additional funding that may be needed once we understand the problem,” Mr. Adu-Boahen said.

According to him, unlike the banking sector, the non-bank financial institution (NBFI) sector has a lot more depositors albeit with smaller amounts.

“Not only do you have to identify what the average amount deposited is but you also have to identify the depositors and figure out the best way possible to reimburse them their deposits.

This will involve the revocation or closure of all these unhealthy institutions. So, we have to create an entity that would have to step in to take care of all these depositors. We are looking at the right structure to use and the delivery mechanisms, among other things. We definitely intend to sort this out by the end of the year.

Information available to the B&FT indicates that more than a dozen savings and loans companies are in distress, with depositors finding it difficult to access their savings. It is reported that some of these institutions have shut down their operations suddenly, leaving customers frustrated and desperate.

    Working again

According to the Deputy Finance Minister, government is fully committed to the financial sector bailout to make sure that all issues are resolved because “we really believe that until we do that we will not be able to have a healthy financial sector, which will lead to a delay in delivery of credit to the private sector which is a fundamental pillar of our growth strategy.

So, we really want the financial sector rehabilitated so that it can work properly and deliver credit to the private sector so they can grow and create the jobs that we need. Now that we are almost done with the banking sector, the next area of focus is the microfinance, savings and loans,” he added.
