Olympiakos beat Fiorentina in Europa Conference League final to make history

Ayoub El Kaabi struck four minutes from the end of extra time as Olympiakos defeated Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final, becoming the first Greek club to win a European trophy.

The Moroccan striker, a key player in Olympiakos‘ journey to the final, scored with a low header from Santiago Hezze’s cross, igniting celebrations at the AEK Arena in Athens. A lengthy video assistant referee check confirmed El Kaabi’s 11th goal of the competition and secured their place in Greek football history.

This victory marks the second consecutive year of heartbreak for Fiorentina, who lost last season’s final to West Ham due to a late goal by Jarrod Bowen.

Olympiakos started strong, fueled by their passionate supporters who had traveled from Piraeus to the home of their rivals AEK in northern Athens. This match was only the second time a Greek team reached a European final, while it was Fiorentina’s sixth appearance.

Both teams had opportunities in a first half that promised excitement but produced few clear chances. On-loan Wolves midfielder Daniel Podence forced a fine save from Fiorentina goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano early on. Giacomo Bonaventura had a chance to give Fiorentina the lead, but his effort was easily saved by Konstantinos Tzolakis.

Fiorentina created the best move of the night in the second half when right-back Dodo surged forward and found Christian Kouame in space, but Kouame’s poor contact allowed Tzolakis to clear the ball.

Extra time was needed, and it was El Kaabi, who scored five goals in the semi-finals against Aston Villa, who rose to the occasion again.

Olympiakos, underdogs against Fiorentina, thrashed Unai Emery’s Aston Villa 6-2 on aggregate in the semi-finals. Panathinaikos was the only previous Greek team to reach a European final, losing to Ajax in the 1971 European Cup final at Wembley.

As the game neared its end, with chances becoming scarce, it seemed both sides were preparing for a penalty shootout. However, Olympiakos committed men forward in a late attack, and the 30-year-old El Kaabi, whose career spans Morocco, China, Turkey, Qatar, and now Greece, was in the right place to secure his place in Olympiakos folklore.

NEIP plans to train 5,000 ‘kayayeis’ by December

The National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) has initiated training for head porters, commonly known as Kayayeis, as part of the Kayayei Empowerment Programme, overseen by the Office of the Vice President, in Madina and Ashaiman.

Commencing on Tuesday, May 28, the training will benefit 5,000 participants, with 600 individuals per cohort each month, continuing until December 2024.

The training modules encompass a variety of skills, including beading and jewelry, soap and detergent production, makeup artistry, baking, decor, and pedicure and manicure services, among others.

This initiative follows the inauguration of the Kayayei Empowerment Training Centre by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Tuesday, May 21, in Madina, Accra.

The Centre is well-equipped with two training rooms, three pantries, a kitchen, a clinic, 15 washrooms, five dormitories, fire extinguishers, CCTV, 24/7 security, and a food shed. Additionally, training and hostel facilities under the Kayayei Empowerment Project are located in various parts of Accra and Kumasi.

The primary aim of the Kayayei Empowerment Programme is to provide head porters with Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), imparting practical skills and knowledge to prepare participants for specific trades and occupations.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Bawumia addressed the skepticism and criticisms surrounding the project, expressing his confidence in its success and the positive impact it will have on the lives of the Kayayeis.

“When I made this promise on behalf of the government, there were many who thought it was not a realistic promise. They thought it was not possible. They said it was a 419 scheme, but I knew that ‘insha Allah’ it was possible for us to do it.”

“We had COVID in 2020, and we had to recover from it and so what we are doing for Kayayei’s today is part of a whole programme of activity of our government to help the poor and the vulnerable,” he said.

Bawumia will introduce a long-term plan to check Cedi depreciation in 2025 – Stephen Amoah

Deputy Minister for Finance, Dr. Stephen Amoah, HAS assured that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, if elected, plans to develop a long-term strategy to address the depreciation of the cedi.

He described the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi as a chronic issue stemming from the country’s import-driven economy.

In a media address on Wednesday, he emphasized that the high demand for the dollar, driven by imports, perpetuates the cedi’s depreciation.

He asserted that this issue demands national attention and extends beyond the capabilities of any single government to resolve.

“Cedi depreciation is a ritual problem, I agree with you. It’s not because of one particular government…It’s an issue that has nationalistic or that needs nationalistic attention,” Dr Amoah said.

The Deputy Finance Minister added “so far as we keep on being an importer-driven economy, we’ll be having problems with the cedi because we import almost everything. But Inshallah, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, next year if he comes, we’re going to design a long-term framework to deal with the cedi.”

Over the past month, the Ghanaian cedi has weakened further against the US dollar and other major foreign currencies.

Meanwhile, on May 24, Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam assured that the Ministry of Finance is collaborating with the Bank of Ghana to implement measures to address the depreciation of the cedi.

These measures include expediting the fiscal consolidation process by rationalizing spending and enhancing revenue mobilization, intensifying the gold-for-oil program, and appropriate foreign exchange interventions by the Bank of Ghana, among other strategies.

Additionally, on Monday, May 27, in response to regulatory concerns, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) established a task force dedicated to overseeing all foreign exchange bureaus and enforcing compliance with regulatory standards.

The primary objective of this task force is to address the activities of illegal operators within the foreign exchange market and promote enhanced market transparency.

By closely monitoring the operations of these bureaus, the BoG aims to mitigate unauthorized practices and foster a more regulated and transparent environment within the foreign exchange sector.

National Security Ministry warns public to be vigilant ahead of 2024 elections

The National Security Ministry has embarked on a campaign to sensitize Ghanaians about the importance of staying vigilant and reporting suspicious activities to the authorities, especially as the country approaches the election period.

As part of the “See Something, Say Something” campaign, the ministry visited Tamale and plans to engage stakeholders in the northern region.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about the dangers of terrorism and violent extremism, particularly in light of incidents in neighboring countries.

Akosua Dankwa Ntim Sekyere, Coordinator for the campaign, emphasized the need for vigilance, especially with the influx of refugees into the country daily.

Paramount Chief of Karaga Traditional area, Naa Bakpem Kar’Naa Abdulai Nantogma, urged the ministry to work towards “silencing the gun” to prevent trouble.

He highlighted the potential for his area alone to cause chaos in the country.

Saboba District Chief Executive, Bingrini George, described the visit as timely, noting that the District Security Committee has been educating border communities on vigilance.

He called on the people of Saboba to support the campaign for the safety of Ghana.

Mahama has not said he will stablise the cedi in 100 days – Bawa Mogtari

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has firmly refuted claims that he pledged to stabilize the faltering local currency within 100 days of taking office.

Contrary to reports that Mr. Mahama made such a promise at the 8th Ghana CEO Summit, a statement released on Wednesday, May 29, and signed by Joyce Bawah Mogtari, his Special Aide and Spokesperson, clarified Mr. Mahama’s actual intentions.

She stated that Mr. Mahama plans to initiate an urgent economic recovery and fiscal consolidation plan following a national economic dialogue, which will be held within the first hundred days of his tenure.

“Mr Mahama, with a deep understanding of the economic challenges confronting the country today, did not promise to stabilise the Ghana Cedi within 100 days. Instead, he laid out a comprehensive plan in his remarks at the 8th Ghana CEO Summit to address the challenges, demonstrating his grasp of the situation.

In his own words, Mahama stated, “Our number one priority will be stabilising the economy and restoring a stable currency. We will launch an urgent economic recovery and fiscal consolidation plan following a national economic dialogue to be held within one hundred days of assumption of office.”

During a press engagement on Friday, May 24, Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam identified three main factors contributing to the cedi’s decline.

He attributed the cedi’s depreciation to the appreciation of the US dollar on the international market, seasonal demand for foreign exchange, and the recent payment of contractors totaling over GHC40 billion.

As of May 2024, the Ghanaian cedi has depreciated by 14.2%, according to Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam. Despite this depreciation, Dr. Amin emphasized the currency’s relative strength.

Even Trump, Obama took money from citizens in their bid to become president – Cheddar defends Save Ghana Fund

Founder of the political movement The New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, has assured Ghanaians that he has no intention of deceiving them in his quest to become president.

In an interview on TV3, Mr. Bediako, also known as Cheddar, emphasized that his virtual crowdfunding platform, the “Save Ghana Fund,” aims to raise GHC100 million from the public for projects and campaign efforts ahead of the elections.

He assured that this initiative is not designed to syphon money from innocent citizens.

Mr. Bediako further explained that it is reasonable for a leader to seek support from citizens, noting that such practices are common in the Western world.

“When you go to the Western world, anyone who wants to be a leader, goes to seek funding from the nation, asking them to donate. Whether it was Obama who was poor before becoming president, or Trump who was extremely rich before becoming president.

“You need the people to empower. You need the people to put you in that position,” he said.

Mr Bediako further added that “When you come to Africa, it is completely reverse. The politician will go to the people and say take money, go and vote for me and when they become president, they take the money hundred times.”

According to him, he is well-to-do and does not need to dupe Ghanaians to become rich. He added that such a perception could come from ignorant people.

“A GHC100 million is a lot of money but I have that same money just to buy a house in LA. I have worked hard to get me some money and invest hundreds of millions in dollars in the country that I am from. So I don’t think I need their money to make a ponzi scheme to become rich. Then I think it is ignorance. People will say what they like,” he said.

A Ponzi scheme is a type of investment scam that promises high returns with little or no risk to investors. The scheme generates returns for earlier investors by acquiring new investors. Instead of investing the funds, the scheme operator uses them to pay returns to earlier investors or to withdraw for personal use.

The New Force has unveiled its virtual crowdfunding platform, named the “Save Ghana Fund.”

In a video message released on May 6th as part of the launch, the leader of The New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, called on the people of Ghana to support the movement and its cause.

Mr Bediako’s message urges the nation to break away from the culture of political candidates buying votes, highlighting how this practice undermines the genuine and free choice of voters and distorts the true aspirations and investments of the people.

“A call to you and to everyone who cares about the future of Ghana: The New Force movement seeks to ensure our commitment to the nation and to each other in the pursuit of equality, empowerment, and equity for all in our society. The campaign is built on three key values: visibility, accessibility, and transparency.”

In his brief video message accompanying the launch, the leader of The New Force movement emphasized that vote-buying tarnishes democracy by perpetuating the mismanagement of the nation’s resources and fostering a culture of corruption.

Media granted full access to broadcast all anti-LGBTQ+ bill cases

The Judicial Service of Ghana has granted media outlets full access to court proceedings concerning the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2024, commonly known as the anti-gay Bill.

This decision, confirmed in a communiqué issued on Tuesday, May 28, permits both radio and television media to cover all court proceedings related to the bill. The move comes in response to widespread public interest in the legislation, which has sparked significant nationwide debate.

By granting media access, the Judicial Service aims to ensure transparency and keep the public informed about the legal process as it unfolds.

“Reference instructions from Management of the Judicial Service of Ghana regarding the public interest in cases on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2024 (the “Bill”), permission has been granted for the media (including Radio and Television) to have full access to the relevant courts to undertake a coverage of all proceedings in those cases concerning the Bill,” an excerpt of the statement said.

Four separate lawsuits are currently challenging the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2024.

Amanda Odoi and Richard Dela Sky have filed cases directly with the Supreme Court, questioning the bill’s passage. In addition, Paul Boama-Sefa and Prince Obiri-Korang have brought separate challenges to the High Court.

President Akufo-Addo has refrained from signing the bill into law until these outstanding cases are resolved. However, this position has been condemned by the minority in parliament, as well as other groups and individuals.

“Today, tomorrow, and forever, Andre Ayew’s heart beats for Ghana” – Fifi Tackie

The spokesperson for the Ayew brothers, Fifi Tackie, has seemingly reacted to the exclusion of Black Stars captain Andre Ayew from Otto Addo’s 26-man squad for the upcoming crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Mali and Central African Republic next month.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, Otoo Addo revealed the squad and mentioned that he had an extensive conversation with Ghana’s record appearance holder before making the decision. However, he chose not to disclose the details of their discussion.

“I had a long chat with Andre and gave him the reason why he is not in the squad. I talk to players directly and I don’t like to put information out about what we spoke about. This is the decision we took and it’s not like he necessarily agreed, but I still have big respect for him,” he said.

In a post after this news, Mr Tackie in a post on X platform reminded Ghanaians of Ayew’s dedication to the country despite the odds. He noted that Ayew remains proud of his country and will forever love his motherland.

“Andre Ayew’s dedication to Ghana is unwavering and lifelong, a commitment that began in his childhood and remains unshakeable to this day. Through thick and thin, he stands proudly as a son of the nation, his passion and loyalty to Ghana burning bright for all to see. Today, tomorrow, and forever, Andre Ayew’s heart beats for Ghana,” he wrote.

Ayew, 34, has netted 5 goals in 19 league appearances for French Ligue 1 side Le Havre this season.

Ghana, currently 4th in their group with three points, will face Mali in Bamako on June 6 before hosting the Central African Republic in Kumasi on June 10.

Gov’t is happy SSNIT hotel scandal, KPMG report are breathing because NDC is after AG – Bridget Otoo claims

Prominent social media personality, Bridget Otoo, has alleged that the government must be pleased with the recent developments in the Ambulance case involving the Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and the state, being represented by the Attorney General Godfred Dame.

She believes that the controversy surrounding the case has provided the government breathing space from the public with regard to the KPMG audit report by President Nana Akufo-Addo over the deal between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) and the ongoing sale of SSNIT hotels to Member of Parliament for Abetifi Constituency, Bryan Acheampong.

“The government must be happy with the NDC’s focus on the AG. I mean, SSNIT hotel scandal is now breathing and SML KPMG full report is also breathing,” she wrote in a post on X on May 29.

    Ambulance case

Dr. Ato Forson, a former Deputy Finance Minister, is facing trial for his alleged involvement in the procurement of faulty ambulances for Ghana. This case has sparked public conversations, with some individuals calling for the Attorney General’s resignation.

The Attorney General insisted that Jakpa had sent letters requesting a plea bargain, which had not been accepted. However, the NDC countered these claims by playing a tape during a press conference on Tuesday, May 28. The NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, stated that Jakpa never requested a plea bargain.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has stated that the alleged audio tape involving Attorney General Godfred Dame and Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ambulance case, released by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been tampered with.

At a press conference on Tuesday, May 28, NPP National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) described the tape as distorted and manipulated, claiming it was “cut and pieced together” by the NDC to create a misleading impression.

    KPMG Audit

The release of the KPMG audit report by President Nana Akufo-Addo comes in response to weeks of mounting pressure from the public and civil society organizations for transparency regarding the contentious contract.

The President commissioned KPMG to audit the contract on January 2, 2024, with an initial deadline of January 16, 2024, later extended to February 23, 2024.

The report revealed tax evasion by the company, contracts awarded without PPA and Parliamentary approval.

    SSNIT

Organised Labour has voiced concerns over the ongoing divestiture of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) shares in four hotels to Rock City Hotel, owned by Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Agriculture.

The group has urged the government to halt the process, warning of a potential nationwide strike by workers if the divestiture proceeds.

SSNIT is close to finalizing the sale of 60% of its shares in Labadi Beach Hotel, LA Palm Royal Beach Resort, Ridge Royal Hotel, and Elmina Beach Resort to Rock City Hotel.

This move has sparked widespread criticism, prompting North Tongu MP Okudzeto Ablakwa to file a petition with the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

Tanker drivers pleased as framework on conditions of service takes effect July 1

Starting July 1, 2024, fuel tanker drivers in Ghana will receive suitable remuneration as outlined in the policy framework presented to their employers and regulators.

This agreement resolves the issues that prompted the tanker drivers to strike on Tuesday, May 21.

Francis M.K. Sallah, the Deputy General Secretary of the General Transport Drivers and Chemical Workers Union of the TUC, announced this development.

He further stated that all stakeholders have agreed to the modalities outlined in the framework.

“We met on the document because other stakeholders involved indicated that there are other portions in the document that need a bit of clarity. We have cleared many of the doubts in the document. Inclusive of it is employer-employee relationships.

“That must be adhered to. We would finish this and ensure that parties are clear on all aspects. And then by the end of June, all data of the tanker operators and their assistants would be captured.

“That is before the end of June, to ensure that effective 1st July, all the tanker operators and their assistants will receive their monthly salaries and other allowances that is required.”

  • Stop diverting funds allocated to NHIA to Consolidated Fund – Gov’t told

Stop diverting funds allocated to NHIA to Consolidated Fund – Gov’t told

A Pharmacist and Research Fellow at the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Kwame Sarpong Asiedu, has warned the Akufo-Addo government about the imminent danger of continuing to divert funds allocated to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) into the consolidated fund.

In an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Asiedu stated that this diversion threatens the sustainability of healthcare services in Ghana, as hospitals require these funds to operate effectively.

“We know from parliamentary documents that they [NHIA] had only 6% of releases in a particular year. We also know that this government has capped the funding they can receive even though citizens are making the statutory payment. When you go and buy anything, you pay for your NHIS levy among the taxes but they are not receiving the money so they also can’t pay.

“Our health system is 75 to 80% dependent on forex because a lot of the consumables are imported whether they are being used in hospitals, pharmacies, and medical laboratories. So they are losing money, because if you’ve not been paid since October of last year what was the dollar then and what is the dollar now? The true value of whatever service you [hospitals] gave has reduced,” he said on Wednesday.

Mr. Asiedu further indicated that this financial strain on health facilities threatens Ghana’s commitment to achieving universal health coverage by 2030, a key component of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He warned that health facilities may be compelled to refuse patients who present NHIA cards, instead requiring upfront payment before providing care. Asiedu believes this move would undermine the efforts invested in attaining universal health coverage.

“Ghana has signed up to provide universal health coverage to all citizens by 2030 as part of the SDG. The key thing about this universal health coverage is that finance should not be a barrier to the obtaining of healthcare. It doesn’t mean that healthcare shouldn’t be paid for, but it means, at the point of need, you shouldn’t be denied access because of lack of funds.

“So the worst case scenario is that Ghana wouldn’t be able to achieve this goal because that fundamental requirement that money should not be a barrier is not being met. So, basically we are paying lip service. With the way things are going with the NHIS, in a while, you’ll go to private hospitals and healthcare providers won’t be able to provide healthcare when you come with NHIA card,” he projected.

The CDD-Ghana fellow also noted that citizens’ plight would worsen, given the current high inflation and cedi depreciation, if they are forced to resort to out-of-pocket payments for healthcare.

Mr. Asiedu called for an immediate cessation of the fund capping, arguing that the government should prioritize healthcare funding over the consolidated fund, especially in an election year.

“Government has been collecting the NHIS taxes. This has nothing to do with the IMF because when we buy something, we pay the NHIS tax, so all what government needs to do is to send the money back to where it belongs which is the NHIA.

“Give the money back to NHIA so that they can use it to do what they are supposed to. It is a very easy fix, but the complication is that, if they do that there will be a massive hole in the consolidated fund and they are prioritising the consolidated fund in an election year at the expense of our health and expected life span.”

  • We’re in pain, some of our members are dead – Road Contractors Association over delayed payment by gov’t

We’re in pain, some of our members are dead – Road Contractors Association over delayed payment by gov’t

Chairman of the Road Contractors Association, John Afful, has bemoaned the devastating state members of the Association are in owing to the debt government owes them.

During a press briefing on Friday, May 24, Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam stated that the government had spent approximately GH¢49 billion on payments to contractors.

But this claim has been disputed by the Association of Contractors. In an interview on TV3, Mr Afful, government should direct its members to claim the money it claims to have paid.

According to him, some members have lost their lives due to the economic hardships they have faced since government has failed to pay what is due them.

“We’re in pain; some of our members are even dead. If they’ve indeed paid us, they should show us where it is so we can go for our money,” said.

Also, the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry has lamented the plight of many of its members due to an unpaid debt of GH¢15 billion owed by the government, which has accumulated since 2014.

According to the Chamber, this situation has resulted in the deaths of some members, others being bedridden, and several facing lawsuits from their financiers due to delays in repaying loans.

He described the dire condition many contractors are facing due to the government’s failure to pay the GH¢15 billion debt accrued since 2019.

“Every day, labourers and professionals, financial institutions, cement dealers, and fuel suppliers, are all calling and demanding for their money from one contractor, bringing untold thinking and health difficulties to us,” he said.

“Some contractors have died. There’s one contractor in good standing who is currently bedridden and cannot do anything; I spoke with the wife last week Friday, and even money to take care of him is a problem. A lot of them are also in court,” Mr Cherry added.

He clarified that the funds allocated to contractors are divided into different categories, which include covering interest payments on loans. This often leaves them with only around five percent or a maximum of ten percent of the total contract amount.

“So, if the contractor works and the certificate that’s supposed to have been honoured within 91 days travels to 600 days or 1,000 days and over, the financial institutions that loan money to the contractor will convert their simple interest into compound interest, because there’s a default.

Therefore, at the end of the day, if a contractor is being paid, all those monies go to the financial institutions, without a drop left for the contractor… some contractors have now become blacklisted,” he said.

According to Mr. Cherry, the breakdown of the debt includes GH¢6 billion owed to contractors since 2017, accumulated from Road Fund projects, and GH¢5 billion from Government of Ghana contracts since 2019.

Additionally, there is GH¢4.4 billion owed for Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) road projects accumulated since 2014, of which GH¢1 billion has been paid in the last month, and GH¢600 million for Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) projects.

Mr. Cherry also mentioned outstanding debts owed to contractors in the Energy sector and for the government’s recent Agenda 111 hospital projects.

He emphasized that if the aforementioned GH¢49 billion had been paid, numerous suspended projects across the country would have resumed, and the pace of work would have increased. However, this is not the current situation.

The Chamber’s CEO, however, said they were willing to jaw-jaw with the government for a solution regarding the payment of debts, adding, “Should things not go well, the government will see the other side of us [contractors].”

The Speaker said that the Chamber had already taken action in that direction and that a meeting with the Minister of Works and Housing was set for May 27. Later this week, a meeting with the Minister of Finance was anticipated.

Contracts of some stalled road projects in Ashanti Region to be terminated

Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah has announced that the government plans to terminate several road contracts in the Ashanti region due to delays.

The government has also reaffirmed its strong commitment to completing key roads connecting farming communities in the Ashanti region to the regional capital, Kumasi, and other regions.

Simon Osei-Mensah highlighted that the poor road network within the Asante Akim South Municipality is adversely affecting residents in and around the municipality.

He noted that the 12km road between Komeaboye and Kokoben and the 8km road project between Obogu and Kumeso will be terminated and reassigned to a different contractor for completion due to the delays.

“Some of the roads were awarded to three contractors. Unfortunately, the contractors at the beginning and the end have completed their projects and those within the middle parts have not completed. One of them [the roads] is about eight kilometres and the other is about 12 kilometres which we think must be terminated and re-awarded, possibly to the contractor who constructed the other roads within the same vicinity.

“Again, there are some critical routes we need to also have a look at, and that is between Obogu and Kumeso, which is about 8.5 kilometres. That road is very critical because it links Asante South Municipal Assembly to the Eastern region, that is Birim North and this is a very critical road.”

The minister made these disclosures after inspecting several road construction projects, including the upgraded 7km Juaso through Nkwanta to Obogu road, the 10km Banka through Otuokwai to Kokoben road, and the Komeaboye to Saabo Junction road.

A Takoradi Circuit Court has remanded two students from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) into police custody on charges of conspiring to commit a crime, specifically ‘sextortion’.

The accused, Jerome Enyam and Ebenezer Adam, both 19 years old and residents of Fijai and Kojokrom respectively, are second-year students at KNUST, Kumasi. Their actions violate the Criminal Offenses Act and the Cyber Security Act.

Prosecuting, D/SGT Robert Mensah informed the Court, presided over by Her Ladyship Harriet Charway, that the accused individuals were friends and classmates of the victim, Rhyndolf Owusu Hammond, a 20-year-old former KNUST student and son of the complainant, Mr. Stephen Owusu Hammond.

The Prosecutor recounted that in early 2023, the complainant’s son recorded a video of an intimate moment with his girlfriend and stored it on his laptop. A close friend and key witness in the case, Ekow Wilson, transferred the video to his personal phone out of excitement. Without Wilson’s knowledge, one of the accused airdropped the video to his own phone and shared it with his accomplice.

Subsequently, in Takoradi, within the jurisdiction of this Court, the two accused, possessing the explicit video, harassed, threatened, and coerced Hammond, extorting GH¢1,800 from him under the threat of releasing the video on social media.

On November 7, 2023, the accused sent an anonymous text message to Hammond, demanding GH¢2,500 to prevent the video’s release. The victim then informed his father, who reported the case to the Police Intelligence Directorate in Takoradi, leading to the arrest of the accused.

Police recovered cell phones containing the explicit video from the accused, and after investigation, they were charged with the relevant offenses.

Over 200 medical products including tramadol destroyed by FDA in North East Region

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the North East Region has launched a crackdown on drug abuse, seizing and destroying over 200 medical products, including tramadol, a drug commonly abused by the youth.

This effort, involving local associations, investigative agencies, and other stakeholders, underscores the collective action required to tackle this challenge effectively.

Jacob Amoako Mensah, head of the FDA in the region, warned about the dangers of drug abuse, highlighting its potential consequences on individuals’ lives and its broader impact on society, including its contribution to criminal behavior.

He emphasized that such operations must be part of sustained efforts by the FDA and other relevant authorities.

Addressing drug addiction among the youth, Mensah advocated for a multifaceted approach involving law enforcement, education, community engagement, and support services for those affected.

The destruction of the seized drugs underscores the seriousness with which the issue is being addressed. However, Mensah noted that prevention through awareness campaigns and support networks for those at risk of substance abuse is equally essential.

He stressed that parents, teachers, and community leaders play a vital role in this effort by fostering environments that discourage drug abuse and provide guidance and support to young people.

Mr Mensah said, “What we want to tell the youth is that they should desist from tramadol. When it gets to a point when the person has become addicted, it is difficult to treat such a person. So we don’t want them to be using tramadol. Let doctors prescribe tramadol before one uses it.”

“This exercise today, we have the youth, we have the Gambaga and Nalerigu Youth Association, the National Investigation Bureau, and Narcotic Control Board, all being part and the two Associations who have helped us to embark on this particular exercise to destroy this quantity of tramadol that we are destroying today.”

  • IES projects increase in fuel prices in first half of June

IES projects increase in fuel prices in first half of June

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has predicted that fuel prices will increase again in the first half of June 2024.

This forecast is based on developments in the foreign fuel and domestic forex markets, exacerbated by the worsening performance of the Cedi.

“Gasoline [petrol], Gasoil [diesel], and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) all recorded a decrease of about 4.17%, 0.87%, and 3.44%, respectively over the last two weeks. Given the favourable price changes recorded on the international market for these products, prices at the local pumps should ordinarily reflect a reduction to relieve consumers. However, the massive fall (4.17%) of the Ghana cedi against the U.S. dollar may prevent a realisation of the full gains made on the world fuel market on the local fuel market”, it pointed out.

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has reported that their monitoring of the global Standard & Poor’s (S&P) Platts on petroleum products indicates a decrease in the prices of petrol, diesel, and LPG in the world fuel market.

According to published data for the second pricing window of May 2024, petrol closed at $851.73 per metric tonne, diesel at $749.70 per metric tonne, and LPG at $444.80 per metric tonne. The net changes reflect a price drop of 4.17% for petrol, 0.87% for diesel, and 3.44% for LPG.

Despite the global price decreases, the loss in the local currency’s value has stalled the expected price reductions at domestic pumps during the second pricing window for May 2024.

The IES observed that diesel and petrol prices remained relatively stable among most Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) tracked over the period.

IES’s calculation of the national average price for the three refined petroleum products for the second pricing window of May 2024 shows petrol and diesel selling at GH₵14.22 and GH₵14.00 per litre respectively, while LPG sold for GH₵15.63 per kilogramme.

FULL TEXT: NPP reacts to NDC’s claims against AG in Ato Forson trial

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has stated that the alleged audio tape involving Attorney General Godfred Dame and Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ambulance case, released by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been tampered with.

At a press conference on Tuesday, May 28, NPP National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) described the tape as distorted and manipulated, claiming it was “cut and pieced together” by the NDC to create a misleading impression.

“The NDC today addressed a press conference and released what is believed to be their evidence. Clearly, you could see that it was doctored. It’s a manipulated tape. It is a cut and pieced-together tape, thrown out to create a certain impression. And we are here to respond to these evil-minded persons,” he added.

Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ambulance procurement case, revealed under cross-examination that Attorney General Godfred Dame had been calling him at odd hours to obtain testimony against the Minority Leader, Dr. Ato Forson.

We will provide accurate figures and information ahead of 2024 polls – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has reaffirmed its commitment to providing accurate figures and information as the December elections approach.

Following severe criticism over errors in data published during the ongoing limited voter registration exercise, the EC acknowledged and corrected specific infographics, assuring that the overall statistics of registered voters remain unaffected.

Speaking at an engagement with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and other stakeholders, Chairperson Jean Mensa urged the public to maintain confidence in the Commission.

“Whilst I do not hold brief for the team, because they were relying on Coral Draw to come up with these pie charts and graphs and so on, they were doing it manually. And so what we have done is go back to the drawing board and use Excel.

“And so we may not have those colourful graphs, and the focus should not be on that because the application that was being used was not able to do accurate tabulations, so you will find that people had to do it manually.

“So the Coral Draw has been abandoned, and Excel has been applied. But again, I say this because we are a listening Commission and intend to build trust, you come back and let the people know what went wrong and what has been done.”

$11.9M was paid as mobilisation fee to Chinese contractor – GIDA on Pwalugu Dam project

The Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA) has defended the $12 million payment made to the contractor for the Pwalugu Multipurpose Irrigation Dam project.

In a press statement dated May 28, GIDA explained that the payment was part of the contract terms, which required the contractor, Messrs Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA), to receive a total of $11.9 million as a mobilisation fee upon providing an “advance payment guarantee from a reputable bank.”

GIDA also explained that the government was at no point, at risk by approving the payment and that “contrary to the claim that no work has been done, the contractor has delivered both preconstruction documents and some physical works (camp and access roads).”

Minority members of Parliament’s Works and Housing Committee have raised concerns over the payment and visited the project site last week to inspect the progress of the work.

They expressed disappointment, stating that the contractor had sold materials meant for the project and abandoned the site.

The Member of Parliament for Bongo, Edward Bawa, called for the prosecution of all persons involved in the approval of the $12 million payment but GIDA maintained that “no frivolous payments have been made and the USD11.9 million paid to the contractor was fully covered by a Bank Guarantee valued at USD60.7 million. All payments made were for specific activities executed under contract.”

GIDA insisted and clarified that the terms of the contract were fully adhered to after the contractor provided the advance payment guarantee from Stanbic Bank.

“Under the contract, the Government was expected to pay USD 48,570,889.69 million (which constitutes 12% of the total contract sum of USD 404,757,414.06) as mobilisation to the contractor subject to the provision of an advance payment guarantee from a reputable bank.

“Following the receipt of the advance payment guarantee with face value of USD 60,713,612.11 from the contractor’s bankers (Stanbic Bank), an amount of USD 11,949,088.06 (25% of the total advance mobilisation required ) was paid in three tranches.”

Illegal plastic sales cause Ghana GHC264m annually – Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association

The Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association has made serious allegations against certain Free Zones Companies, accusing them of engaging in illegal practices that result in significant revenue losses for the government.

According to the association, out of the 166 plastic manufacturing companies in Ghana, approximately 12 are registered under the Free Zones Enterprise.

These companies are allegedly importing plastic raw materials duty-free and then illegally selling them on the local market, thus avoiding import duties.

The association claims that this practice has cost the government approximately GH₵22 million per month, totaling about GH₵264 million annually.

President of the Plastic Manufacturers Association, Ebbo Botwe, expressed frustration over the lack of response from the authorities in an interview with Citi News.

“One sad part of this tax is that in Ghana currently, we have about 166 plastic manufacturing companies and out of this, just about 12 of them are Free Zones Enterprise registered. Some of these 12 registered Free Zone Companies, are importing plastic raw materials and illegally selling them on the open local market, thereby causing the government to lose millions and millions in revenue, by way of avoiding payment of import duties – thus depriving the government of the needed revenue. Free Zone Companies are exempted from paying import duties.”

“Eighteen months ago, we reported this situation to the Commissioner General of Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Trade & Industries and the Ghana Free Zones Authority but this illegal business continues.

“It is estimated that the government is losing approximately GHC 22.05 million per month or GHS 264.6 million annually through these illegal activities. This is a serious revenue leakage and we believe we have given enough information to the government to help stop this practice but instead, here we are saddled with yet another new tax.”

Meanwhile, the Ghana Free Zones Authority  (GFZA) in a press release said it has already initiated monitoring and spot checks of the production sites and is “in the process of producing its first report on the impact of the measures by the third quarter of the year.”

“This is not a jury trial” – Judge tells lawyers in Ambulance case

Justice Afia Serwaa Asare Botwe, a Court of Appeal judge sitting as an additional High Court Justice, has expressed unwavering commitment to the law and evidence before the court in the trial against Dr. Ato Forson, Mr. Richard Jakpa, and another individual for financial loss to the state, among other charges.

Her Ladyship, who expressed displeasure at the public commentary following the sitting on May 23, 2024, made it clear to the lawyers of both sides that “this is not a jury trial. You cannot play with the Court’s brain and mind.”

She invited Mrs. Marietta Brew-Oppong, the former Attorney General who was in court, and the current Deputy Attorney-General, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, to speak to their team about their commentary on the matter to the public.

The Justice of the Court warned all lawyers against prejudicial commentary in the matter. Dr. Bassit Bamba rose to his feet and forcefully indicated to the court that his side has not made any prejudicial or injurious publication regarding the proceedings before the court, but rather the Attorney General.

Her Ladyship reiterated her caution and told lawyers to be careful, noting, “we live in a Country where people do not understand the workings of the law and the court.” She added, now wearing a more relaxed face, “allow me room and peace to make a decision.”

    Background

On May 23, 2024, Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, on behalf of the National Democratic Congress, during a press conference, sought to impugn the integrity of the learned Attorney General after the 3rd accused in the Ato Forson trial, Mr. Richard Jakpa, stated that the Attorney General sought his cooperation for the conviction of Dr. Ato Forson.

Angry youth in an undisclosed location have reportedly blocked the convoy of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is also the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), from using a road.

The incident, which was captured in a video circulating on social media, shows the youth pelting stones and throwing broken bottles at the vehicles in the convoy.

While the exact reason for the youth’s actions is unclear, voices in the video referenced the elections. Police officers were present at the scene but were unable to prevent the situation from escalating.

  • Don’t give any revenue assurance deal in petroleum downstream sector – Jinapor tells NPA

Don’t give any revenue assurance deal in petroleum downstream sector – Jinapor tells NPA

Ranking Member on the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, John Jinapor, has expressed concern over the National Petroleum Authority’s (NPA) decision to involve external entities in revenue management and assurance in the petroleum downstream sector.

Jinapor’s comments follow the NPA’s invitation to an entity for a meeting on May 23, 2024, regarding a potential contract to provide supply assurance and management systems in the petroleum downstream sector.

The meeting aims to update selected stakeholders on end-to-end primary supply assurance and management systems, with a presentation by a company named HFILED Limited.

The letter, addressed to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the Assistant Commissioner of Petroleum, Customs Division Tema, Bulk Oil Distributors, the Association of Bankers, and others, indicates that the meeting aims to discuss providing an end-to-end primary supply assurance and management system for the petroleum downstream sector.

Mr. Jinapor has stated that the committee will not approve such a contract unless the controversies surrounding the Strategic Mobilisation Limited’s (SML) arrangement with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) are resolved.

“We will send a signal to NPA, and our message is simple – don’t try anything funny because we wouldn’t tolerate that, we wouldn’t countenance that.

“The systems currently are robust enough, if it needs tweaking, in-house can deal with that,” he said.

He said that if the NPA needed a solution, it should be a holistic solution, stressing that “this pocket of isolated attempts to sign last-minute contracts, we will resist them.”

The Ranking Member of the Mines and Energy Committee clarified that there are various issues arising, not just within the energy sector.

He mentioned that the committee visited the NPA’s head office, where they were informed that the SML contract was redundant and that their system was robust enough to provide the GRA with all necessary information. He questioned what has changed since then.

“So what has changed? All of a sudden, that robust system – are they telling us that it’s no longer robust? Tell the NPA boss that I say don’t.”

Meanwhile, the committee is set to probe into the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) revenue assurance deal.

A KPMG report has revealed several infractions, including a lack of parliamentary and Public Procurement Authority approval, among other issues.

Mr. Jinapor stated in an interview with JoyNews that the findings from KPMG will serve as the foundation for the investigation.

“There are more revelations, very damning revelations and so we intend to do immediate engagement. We’re supposed to do it this week, but you know these issues, a lot of scandals keep coming,” he added.

It is not unlawful to engage in plea bargaining – Sophia Akuffo tells AG on Ambulance case

Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has strongly defended plea bargaining in response to Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame’s accusations against Richard Jakpa.

Her Ladyship emphasized that plea bargaining is a legitimate tool in the prosecution of criminal cases.

Justice Sophia Akuffo explained that plea bargaining can be applied in any criminal case unless there are specific laws prohibiting it.

She highlighted that plea bargaining can even be used in murder cases, underscoring its broad applicability in the criminal justice system.

Her comments come after Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame released plea bargain letters from Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ongoing ambulance purchase case. Jakpa had alleged in court that the Attorney General tried to coerce him into falsely incriminating the first accused.

However, the Attorney General countered Jakpa’s claims by revealing that Jakpa had actually sought plea bargains through multiple letters to drop all charges against him and the other accused.

Justice Sophia Akuffo’s remarks serve as a staunch defense of the plea bargaining process, highlighting its importance and legality in criminal prosecutions.

OSP was set up to save NPP wrongdoers – Former GSL Director

Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has expressed doubts about the effectiveness and impartiality of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), alleging that the government established it to shield its party members from corruption allegations.

In an interview with Citi FM on Tuesday, May 28, Ansa-Asare expressed reservations about the OSP’s effectiveness in combating corruption.

He suggested that the institution might be serving the interests of the ruling party rather than upholding its mandate to impartially address corruption in Ghana.

“I could objectively judge the contributions of the Office of the Special Prosecutor if we had a person like Martin Amidu [former OSP] as the Special Prosecutor. But the person we have now is one of the appointees who might have been brought there for a purpose.”

“So far, what I can say of the Office of the Special Prosecutor seems to me was created purposely to exonerate NPP offenders,” he said.

Inaugurated in 2018, the OSP was conceived as an independent anti-corruption body in Ghana, aligned with the principles of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).

Its core mission is to investigate and prosecute specific cases of alleged or suspected corruption and related offenses in both the public and private sectors.

Beyond its prosecutorial duties, the OSP is also responsible for recovering proceeds derived from corrupt activities. This includes seizing illicitly obtained wealth and implementing preventive measures to curb future instances of corruption.

Copyright infringement allegation hits ‘The Legend of Aku Sika’ play

The National Theatre of Ghana has been alerted to a potential copyright infringement concerning an upcoming play scheduled to be staged at the venue.

In a letter dated May 28, 2024, and seen by myjoyonline.com, George Apraku Dentu claims that “The Legend of Aku Sika,” set to be performed at the National Theatre on June 1st, 2nd, 8th, and 9th, 2024, is originally the creation of his father, L.D. Apraku.

“This is a dramatization of the novel Aku Sika written by the late L.D. Apraku,” the letter states.

He further states that the producers of the play, ImageBureau and April Communication, did not seek his permission.

“…there has not been any contact of the performing group with the copyright owners of the novel ‘Aku Sika’,” he writes.

Speaking to myjoyonline.com, Dentu mentioned the possibility that ‘The Legend of Aku Sika,’ written by Professor Martin Owusu, was inspired by his father’s book.

“I read online that the play which is about to be staged at the National Theatre is based on Nana Kwame Ampadu’s ‘Aku Sika’, and the song is based on the novel ‘Aku Sika’ written by my father,” he said.

Asked if he had read Professor Martin Owusu’s version to ascertain if it bears any similarities with his father’s, he said “no, I haven’t read it. That is why I said ‘possible infringement’.”

Meanwhile, George Quaye, the Team Lead for Image Bureau, clarified that Professor Martin Owusu based the story on a folktale, indicating that George Apraku Dentu’s father is not the original creator of the story.

‘The Legend of Aku Sika’ will be performed at the National Theatre on June 1, 2, 8, and 9, 2024, in honor of the author, Professor Martin Owusu, a lecturer at the University of Ghana who has influenced generations of actors and theatre art professionals.

The play features actors such as Mawuli Semevor, Edinam Atatsi, Arnold Asamoah Baidoo, Roland Adom, Elvis Crystal, Adomaa, among others.

I dropped out of Westminster University to start my business – Cheddar

Founder of The New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar, has noted that he dropped out of school at age 18 to pursue his own business.

He was studying business administration at Westminster University in the United Kingdom. In an interview, Cheddar noted that he sought to gain his skills practically, instead of being fed with the knowledge in a lecture room.

As such, Cheddar does not have a degree from any recognised tertiary institution in the country or any part of the world.

Asked whether he has any degree from any university during an interview on Citi TV’s Face to Face show, he said, “I don’t.”

The host, Umaru Sanda, then asserted that should he, Cheddar, want to fill out a form for a job qualification, his highest qualification would be a Senior Secondary School Examination (SSCE) certificate.

“Well, if you can call it that,” Cheddar replied.

Cheddar dismissed the assertion that, as a president without a university degree, he would not be able to lead his subjects, who are professors and doctors.

Several netizens who have reacted to this video indicated that it does not take one’s academic qualifications to govern; hence, Cheddar would have no issues being president with his current academic qualifications.

The citizen believes running a country is not a herculean task, and hence, Nana Bediako, also known as Cheddar will be able to see the progress of the country.

“Ruling the country is not difficult. It is a mentality the blacks have come up with. If you are made president, you would govern easily,” he said.

He noted that Ghana has the resources needed to be turned into a developed country. He also showed support for Cheddar’s ambition to dredge the sea to Kumasi.

The supporter has decided to rebrand his car with the emblem of the political movement, The New Force.

The car has the image of Nana Kwame Bediako and inscriptions of his name and The New Force.

According to the Ghanaian, the love he has for Cheddar, due to his decision to vie for the presidential position at a young age, compelled him to make such a decision.

The rebranding of the car, he said, was not prefinanced by the political movement, but from his personal coffers.

Don’t cast a slur on the judiciary – Judge warns Sammy Gyamfi amid Ambulance trial

During the trial of Republic v Ato Forson & Richard Jakpa & Anor, an incident occurred involving Sammy Gyamfi, the Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which led to a stern warning from Justice Afia Serwaa Asare Botwe.

Sammy Gyamfi was called to approach the Bench, but Justice Asare Botwe redirected him to the dock, where she questioned him about his conduct during a previous court session. She noted a difference in his demeanor inside and outside the courtroom, referring to his behavior during political speeches.

Lawyers for Dr. Ato Forson clarified the timing of Gyamfi’s entrance to the courtroom, following which Gyamfi made comments to the press about the proceedings. Satisfied with the timing, Justice Asare Botwe discharged Gyamfi from the dock.

The judge then addressed both parties and counsel, warning them against making prejudicial comments on the case. She reminded them of the need for responsible statements, particularly in relation to the reputation of the court.

Gyamfi attempted to clarify a statement he was alleged to have made, but Justice Asare Botwe emphasized the importance of respect for the court. She instructed Gyamfi to be more responsible in his statements, emphasizing that lawyers should not engage in disrespectful behavior towards the Bench.

The court adjourned to the 4th of June, 2024, after which Justice Asare Botwe instructed Deputy Attorney General Dr. Bassit, learned Tuah Yeboah, Mrs. Marrietta Oppong, and Mr. Sammy Gyamfi to report to her chambers.

    Background

The incident stemmed from comments made by Sammy Gyamfi during a press conference on the 23rd of May, where he sought to impugn the integrity of the Attorney General following claims made by Richard Jakpa, the second accused in the Ato Forson trial, that the Attorney General sought his cooperation in convicting Dr. Ato Forson.

“We don’t want to be surprised” – BoG tells Société Générale on shares acquisition

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, has informed the management of Société Générale Ghana that the central bank expects transparency regarding the individuals interested in acquiring shares in the bank.

On Wednesday, May 8, the Managing Director of Société Générale Ghana, Hakim Ouzzani, dismissed media reports suggesting the bank was exiting Ghana as mere rumours, stating that such reports did not originate from the bank.

In a statement on Thursday, May 9, the management of Société Générale Ghana acknowledged that the Société Générale Group had initiated a strategic review.

Regarding the situation, Governor Addison noted that the central bank has not yet received any formal information on the bank’s next steps.

Dr Addison said this during the 118th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press conference in Accra on Monday, May 27.

“This is an area where we have not formally received any information from SG both from their group or from the office in Accra.

“I have had discussions with their office in Cote I’dvoire and I have complained that we don’t want to be surprised.

“We are hearing things in the air and we want to see the long list of those that are interested in acquiring their shares, we do not even want to see the shortlist. So I have expressed those concerns to their representatives in their Cote D’Ivoire office and hopefully we will hear something from the group very soon.”

Meanwhile, Société Générale Ghana has assured that further details will be communicated in accordance with applicable legislation at the appropriate time.

“Societe Generale Ghana has been informed that Societe Generale Group, which holds 60.22% of Societe Generale Ghana, has initiated a strategic review. If a concrete development were to be decided, a subsequent communication will be made at the appropriate time according to applicable legislation,” the statement said.

Nduom breaks down after seeing what remains of collapsed GN Bank offices

Chairman of Groupe Ndoum and former owner of the now-defunct Gold Coast Fund Management Company, Dr. Papa Kwesi Ndoum, has recently been visiting his once lively GN Bank offices located in several parts of the country.

In 2019, under the government’s banking sector clean-up, GN Bank (which had become GN Savings and Loans), a company owned by Dr Nduom, had its operating license revoked over reasons of insolvency by the Bank of Ghana.

It’s been over four years and Dr Ndoum has been checking up on what remains of his once lively bank.

In a video sighted on social media, the buildings were dejected, with some areas submerged by water owing to the recent rainfalls.

Dr Nduom could not bear to see what had become of his institution, which provided jobs and income to many Ghanaians.

Meanwhile, Dr Nduom has asserted that the government still owes two of his companies and other subsidiaries an amount exceeding GH¢7 billion.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had revoked the licenses of 53 fund management companies, including Gold Coast Fund Management, in 2019, leading to the freezing of depositors’ funds.

Despite ongoing efforts by depositors and investors to retrieve their funds, they have faced challenges in recovering their investments.

In a recent move to revitalize his companies, Dr. Ndoum has urged the government to reimburse contractors who had borrowed money from Groupe Ndoum.

“A debt that used to be GH¢1.8 billion is now more than GH¢7.1 billion. It is growing every day with interest. So the government of Ghana and its agencies, if they had paid us even one-third of that money to the contractors six years ago, there wouldn’t be a Gold Coast or Black Shield problem.

“There wouldn’t be a GN Bank problem, there wouldn’t be a problem with any of our companies. So today, what we are asking is we are saying let them pay the money. If the government doesn’t have the money, let us come up with a payment plan. They pay us, the customers get paid,” he said.

According to Dr. Ndoum, if the government had settled some of the contractors’ dues earlier, his companies would not be facing the current financial difficulties.

Parliament is scheduled to resume from recess on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 as announced in a statement issued by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on Monday, May 27.

The release stated that the Speaker is exercising his authority to reconvene the house under Order 58 of the standing orders of Parliament.

“Pursuant to Order 58 of the standing orders of the Parliament of Ghana, I, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, hereby give notice that the third meeting of the fourth session of the eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic shall commence on Tuesday, the 11th day of June 2024 at ten o’clock in the forenoon at Parliament House, Accra.”

When Parliament resumes from recess on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, one of the key agenda items will be the government’s proposal to grant approximately $335,072,712.13 in tax exemptions to 42 companies participating in the One District One Factory initiative.

The tax breaks are facilitated by the Exemptions Act, 2022 (Act 1083), which was originally presented to Parliament by former Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, in 2022. This Act aims to support the government’s industrialization efforts by providing financial relief to companies involved in the initiative.

During the resumption of Parliament, members will deliberate on this critical issue, among others, to assess the potential impact of these tax exemptions on the national economy.

    I don’t have a university degree – Cheddar

Founder of The New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar, has revealed that he does not have a degree from any recognised tertiary institution in the country or any part of the world.

  • Bawumia will be one of Ghana’s best presidents – Titus Glover

Bawumia will be one of Ghana’s best presidents – Titus Glover

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, is urging Ghanaians to consider Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the next president, asserting that he would be the best president the country has ever had.

He emphasized that Dr. Bawumia, who has never served as Vice President, represents the best choice for Ghana at this time.

In an interview with Adom FM on the Burning Issue Show, Mr Glover stated, “We are advocating for Dr Bawumia because he has never been president before, but we have all seen the contributions of John Dramani Mahama (JDM). We need to give Bawumia a chance to show what he can achieve.”

“I believe that Bawumia will be one of the finest presidents we will ever have. The progress made by President Akufo Addo will be continued by Bawumia, taking our development to the next level,” he added.

Mr. Glover pointed out the significant infrastructural development under the current administration, such as roads and schools, attributing these achievements to the effective use of resources.

“When a capable person is in charge, they deserve recognition for their good work,” he said.

“I don’t mind if you criticize us, but if you think President Akufo-Addo’s efforts aren’t enough, then I take issue with that.”

Akufo-Addo has proven me right with his gov’t of friends – Former GSL Director-General

A former Director-General of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansah-Asare, expressed no surprise at the governance style he believes President Akufo-Addo is exhibiting.

During an interview on Accra-based Citi FM, he stated that seven years ago, he foresaw a government characterized by nepotism and riddled with scandals, resembling the current administration.

“When Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo took over some seven years ago, I was interviewed and I said that I can predict that the administration will be suffocated by scandals and I have been proven right.

“My apprehension is that the man in charge of the government had too many friends and I saw that it was going to be a government of family and friends, and it turned out to be a government of friends,” he remarked.

Mr. Ansah-Asare expressed concern over the numerous scandals affecting the government, attributing them to the questionable backgrounds of many appointees in office.

“In this country, our culture is that when you are in business with your family and friends, nothing gets done. I remember whispering into the ears of someone who easily has access to the President to advise him on some of these things because if you look at the people who have been appointed as ministers, quite a number of them have cobwebs in their drawers. It is like one of the conditions for appointment is that you must have soiled your hands,” he stated.

Anlo Traditional Council vehicle involved in cocoa smuggling case, suspect arrested

Police arrested a driver for attempting to smuggle a large quantity of cocoa beans to neighbouring Togo.

Abraham Senyaglo, a 35-year-old from Keta, was apprehended while driving a Toyota Hiace Van belonging to the Anlo Traditional Council.

The vehicle was packed with 26 bags of cocoa beans concealed in fertiliser sacks. The police chase began around 2200 hours on the Adomi-Atimpoku stretch when Senyaglo failed to stop at a checkpoint.

A high-speed pursuit ended in his arrest near the Adomi Bridge in the Eastern Region.

Senyaglo claimed he was unaware that the cocoa beans were illegal, stating he was asked by a friend to transport them on his return journey from Suhum to Dzodze after delivering items to the Manhyia Palace for the Asantehene’s 25th Anniversary celebration.

The police dispute his account, alleging he was fully aware of the cargo’s illegal nature. The suspect and the seized goods are in the custody of the Sogakope Police, pending further investigations and prosecution.

The police are tracing the beans’ origin and identifying other individuals involved in the smuggling ring. The Anlo Traditional Council has not issued an official statement on the issue.

The Anti-Cocoa Smuggling Taskforce has been working to disrupt the illegal cocoa supply chain, and this bust reflects their dedication.

  • Address abuses within the Forex Bureau market – Richard Ahiagbah to BoG

Address abuses within the Forex Bureau market – Richard Ahiagbah to BoG

Director of Communications for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has urged the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to diligently fulfil its regulatory obligations to address abuses within the Forex Bureau market, which directly impact the performance of the Cedi against major currencies.

Mr Ahiagbah emphasized the need for proactive measures to counteract these challenges and stabilize the currency.

Mr Ahiagbah noted that currencies across the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region, including the Cedi, have been experiencing fluctuations due to the appreciating value of the dollar during the first quarter of 2024.

This trend has exerted pressure on local currencies, contributing to their depreciation against the dollar.

Despite these challenges, Ahiagbah commended the Ministry of Finance for its efforts in mitigating the impact of the appreciating dollar on the cedi. He acknowledged the ministry’s role in implementing measures to cushion the cedi’s performance amidst external market pressures.

“The Bank of Ghana must persistently discharge its regulatory mandate to deal with the flagrant abuses in the FX market that contribute directly to the cedi’s performance. We are destined to overcome!” Mr Ahiagbah posted on X.

Responding to regulatory concerns, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has established a task force dedicated to overseeing all foreign exchange bureaus and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Dr. Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank, announced this during the 118th monetary policy statement on Monday, May 27, 2024.

  • NIB to lose investment over appointment of NPP PC as MD – Bia East MP

NIB to lose investment over appointment of NPP PC as MD – Bia East MP

The Deputy Ranking Member on the Finance Committee of Parliament, Richard Acheampong, has expressed concerns over the government’s decision to appoint politically exposed individuals to the management of the National Investment Bank (NIB).

Tweneboah Kodua Fokuo, who is running as the Manso Nkwanta parliamentary candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been appointed by President Akufo-Addo as the Managing Director of the National Investment Bank (NIB).

Mr Acheampong argues that such appointments could have severe repercussions for the bank’s operations and overall stability.

The Bia East MP contends that appointing politically connected individuals to key management positions at NIB may erode confidence among investors and depositors, particularly those aligned with opposition parties.

He warns that these dissatisfied investors and depositors might withdraw their funds, potentially destabilizing the bank.

“People are complaining about the good corporate governance of NIB. It is part of the problem, so if you appoint a politically exposed person to manage state institutions, not any other state institutions, or a financial institution, many people who are also affiliated with another political party are going to withdraw their investment from the bank.

“So that was a very bad decision taken by the government. But we are yet to get to know the details of this GH¢2.3 billion and we will look at the terms.”

His remarks follow the government’s recent approval of GH¢2.3 billion to recapitalize the National Investment Bank.

While this financial injection aims to strengthen the bank’s capital base and ensure its continued operation, the Bia East legislator insists that appointing politically exposed persons to key management positions could undermine these efforts.

The first tranche of GH¢400 million is set to be transferred to the bank before the end of May 2024.

Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam announced this approval at the Ministry of Finance’s monthly briefing, stating that the process aims to strengthen the bank’s governance structure, operational efficiency, supervision, and risk management.

Parliament to summon contractor over stalled $12M Pwalugu dam project – Atta Akyea

Former Works and Housing Minister, Samuel Atta Akyea, has pledged to push for a parliamentary investigation into the lack of progress on the Pwalugu Dam Project since its commencement in November 2019.

Mr. Atta Akyea expressed concern, like many Ghanaians, over the allocation of $12 million to the project without any visible results.

He emphasized the importance of Parliament demanding answers from the contractor, stating that it would be more productive than politicizing the issue.

“The first point of the engagement is to bring the contructor, maybe with the consultant as well, and then we begin to grill the contractor that having received $12 million, if there’s documentary evidence to that effect, how did you apply it. Why have you abandoned it? Sometimes, we colour everything as political. But some contractors too can be very funny.

“They’ll receive the money and then probably they’ll abandon the project. I am not saying that is what the contractor has done, but let’s probe into what has happened and the first person we should engage is the contractor. Because the allegation is that it is not a politician who is a beneficiary of a million dollars, but a contractor,” he said on Monday.

He added, “Let’s find out why has it not taken off. If it is somebody’s ineptitude, we will find out. If it is a defalcation of public funds, we will find out. And then we will be sure that this is the reason why a major promise of this government has not taken off.”

Yapei-Kusawgu legislator John Jinapor has raised concerns over a project in the Talensi District earmarked for construction by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has not seen any development despite the NPP having just a few months left in its tenure.

During a media briefing at the site this week, Mr Jinapor disclosed that approximately $12 million had been invested in the project, yet there is nothing to show for it.

He noted that the contractor is missing, and parts of the site have been converted into farming areas by locals.

On April 8, 2024, before the Public Accounts Committee, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, was unable to justify the $11.9 million paid to MS Power China International Group Limited for the Pwalugu Irrigation Project.

According to Samuel Atta-Mills, MP for Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Constituency in the Central Region, no work had been done on the site.

The PAC demanded documentation from the Bank of Ghana to further investigate these transactions.

The Bank of Ghana eventually addressed concerns about the disbursement of $12 million for the Pwalugu Irrigation Project, despite the limited visible progress.

The Central Bank clarified that the payment to the contractors, MS Power China International Group Limited, was made based on government authorization, and therefore, it could not provide additional information.

Bernard Otabil, the Director of Communication at the Bank of Ghana, explained in an exclusive interview with Citi News that the Bank’s role as custodian of government accounts requires it to execute authorized transactions within its mandate.

“We are the Central Bank, we are actually the chief cashiers of the government and we also hold all governments accounts. So, we would act on instructions that have been given to us. Once that approval has been sought and the project is started, then you would also have the role of the ministry of finance at some point, coming in to also look at what has been submitted and whether it is actually in line with what has been submitted with the contract that has been solely specified and when satisfied with the supporting documents that need to be presented.”

“But finally, you will also have the Controller and Accountant General coming in and making that authorization for payment to be made and that comes to us.”

“We will then go ahead to make the payment if the account is fully funded and therefore there will not be any form of disclosure on our part because it is the same. It is not different from any of the banking services that you are very much used to. In our unique position, we deal with the government and most of all the MDAs, but largely we are on the government’s side, we are the bankers of the government.  The government withdraws on its own account, let’s make that clear and nobody can issue a cheque on anybody’s account.”

Prosecute those who misappropriated $12M for Pwalugu Dam project – Bongo MP

Edward Bawa, the Member of Parliament for Bongo, is calling for the prosecution of those responsible for the stalled Pwalugu Multipurpose Irrigation Dam project.

Commissioned in 2019, the project was expected to be completed within 50 months. However, during a recent visit to the site, the Minority Caucus in Parliament expressed dissatisfaction with the progress.

In an interview with Citi News, Edward Bawa stressed that NDC MPs will persistently pursue the project’s completion and seek accountability for the delays.

“We are asking exactly what they used the $12 million for. These are the answers that we are not getting, and that is part of the reason why we decided to go to the site and see what was happening, we got there and realised that nothing had been done, so it behoves on the government to find a way of ensuring that these monies are retrieved and whoever is involved is prosecuted.

“And if $12 million, you can’t find anything there, it tells you that there is a crime to be investigated. And whoever is involved in this must be made to face the full rigours of the law.”

On November 29th, 2019, the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency (H.E.) Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, cut the sod for the construction of the Pwalugu Multi-Purpose Dam Project.

The project, which is the single largest investment ever made in the northern part of Ghana, and estimated to cost US$993 million, would consist of a Hydro-Solar hybrid system of 60 MW hydropower and 50 MW solar power.

The two technologies would complement each other to provide a reliable and stable electricity supply to the national grid. The project would also provide an irrigation scheme covering an area of twenty-five thousand (25,000) hectares and improve water supply to the Northern parts of the country.

In addition, the Multi-Purpose Dam, expected to have been completed in four years, would control the perennial flooding in the northern regions caused by heavy rains and the spillage from the Bagre Dam.

Disgusting! – White man says after Ghanaian women send nudes for iPhone, visa abroad

A Ghanaian man has recounted an embarrassing situation he witnessed involving his beloved sisters from his motherland.

In a video on Instagram, the man accused some Ghanaian women of sending their nudes to a white colleague of his in order to travel abroad and obtain certain favours such as an iPhone.

He noted that these ladies managed to get hold of his foreign colleague after he engaged in an Instagram live video with him.

He said after the video, about 60 to 70 Ghanaian ladies flooded his colleague’s message box, making offers in order to travel abroad, among others.

The Ghanaian noted that his male white colleague engaged him on the matter and described the Ghanaian ladies as “disgusting.”

He advised his sisters from Ghana to desist from such shameful acts.

“There’s never a bad time for a good investment in Ghana” – Anyaa Sowutuom MP

The Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom in the Greater Accra Region, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has asserted that Ghana’s economy remains resilient and attractive to global investors.

Despite current economic challenges, he highlighted that the government has established a strong foundation for investors to profit, especially in the manufacturing sector, through the One District-One Factory (1D1F) initiative.

Dr. Adomako Kissi, a member of Parliament’s Accounts Committee, made these remarks in an interview with the Ghana News Agency over the weekend in Accra, during a ceremony honoring Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).

“There’s never a bad time for a good investment in Ghana; in as much as we think that things are difficult, serious-minded people are doing hardcore business and we need to emulate that,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of investing in the SME sector, he explained that small businesses are inherently capable of organic growth, making them ideal partners for business ventures.

“I, therefore, encourage investors to support their growth, as we turn the economy, with our focus on shifting more on SMEs and provide them with resources, not just money, sometimes, proper record keeping and accounting,” he said.

Referencing the case of Zoom during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Adomako Kissi, said, “All is not lost to invest in our country. There’s hope because the government has laid a solid foundation for investors to recoup their investments.”

Encouraging local SMEs to continue to work to keep their companies for a better future, he said, “Ghanaians are resilient; we thrive where it’s impossible. Even in bad times, good companies still flourish and new ones also pop up.”

He emphasized that SMEs are the backbone of any economy, including Ghana. As these businesses grow, they contribute to economic growth by paying taxes, which in turn supports the government and the nation’s development.

Underscoring the contribution of small businesses, Dr Adomako Kissi, said, “If SMEs employ about 50 people, it relieves the government of employment numbers, and as they grow bigger, they employ more.”

He urged the award recipients to use the recognition to further support the government’s economic recovery efforts and create more employment opportunities for the youth.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Kofi Damquah Bingabin, Director of Zeigler Ama Ghana Ltd, a jewellery manufacturing company and recipient of the Investment Promotion category, stated that the award would serve as a motivation for them.

“This award will give us a boost, and people will recognise the work that we do – buying, selling, repairing, and customising of jewellery, including watches, necklaces, and rings,” Mr Bingabin, said.

Gov’t has not managed the economy recklessly – Bawumia

Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has denied allegations of reckless spending by the Akufo-Addo administration.

He stated that the NPP government has judiciously used funds to implement projects that will benefit the country in the long term.

The Vice President also announced plans to run a government with 50 ministers to reduce expenditure and save public funds.

Speaking at the 8th Ghana CEOs Summit in Accra on Monday, May 27, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need to cut government spending by 3 to 5 percent.

“The networking of the hospitals—you know, Ghana.gov—all of these things have been spearheaded. So the government is not uploading and spending upfront. And I want us to apply this model.

“My view, as I have stated, is that let us bring down government expenditure between 3 to 5 percent. I believe that I can run a government with 50 ministers rather than what we are doing today.”
