Canoe Owners Association calls for pension scheme for fishermen

President of the Canoe and Fishing Gears Owners Association, Nana Kweigyah, has called on the flag bearer and leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, to implement a comprehensive social security policy for members of the fishing industry if he wins the December 2024 elections.

During Mahama’s visit to the Tema Fishing Community on Saturday, Nana Kweigyah highlighted the difficult conditions faced by fishers upon retirement or in the event of accidents at sea.

He urged Mahama to extend the proposed social security policy for Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) members to the fishing community and to provide insurance for fishers in case of accidents.

Nana Kweigyah also criticized the politicization and discrimination in the distribution of premix fuel and outboard motors to fishermen, advocating for the reinstatement of the Premix Fuel Committee under an NDC government in 2025.

He stressed the dire sanitation conditions at landing beaches, which are plagued with plastic waste and pose significant hazards to the fishing community.

Representatives from various regions, other associations in the fishing industry, and chief fishermen voiced concerns about the adverse effects of the closed season on artisanal fishers.

In his response, Mahama reminisced about his interactions with the artisanal fishing community during his tenure as vice president and president.

He pledged to reestablish the Landing Beach Committee, promote youth participation in beach sanitation, and enforce the exclusive zone policy with assistance from the Ghana Navy.

Mahama assured that an NDC government would “exempt artisanal fishers from the closed-season policy” and complete the National Fisheries College, a project initiated by the late President John Atta Mills, to ensure that fishing industry members receive appropriate training and can work more effectively.

Police deny Asiedu Nketia’s claims of higher authority involvement in Ofaakor firearms arrests

The Ghana Police Service has refuted claims made by Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), suggesting that the arrest of three individuals for possession of firearms at Ofaakor in the Awutu Senya East Constituency was due to an “order from above.”

In a video circulating online, Mr. Asiedu Nketia alleged that the Accra Regional Police Commander, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), and the Inspector-General of Police had informed him that the arrests were directed by higher authorities.

The Police Service has categorically denied these assertions, stating that they are false and without any basis. According to the police, none of the officers mentioned in the video has ever made such a pronouncement.

The incident in question involved the discovery of a Pump Action gun with four rounds of ammunition in a vehicle at the Electoral Commission’s offices in Ofaakor.

The individuals involved were Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the NDC parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, along with Abdulai Aziz and Mustapha Mohammed. Naa Koryoo was cautioned for the unauthorized transfer of firearms, while Aziz and Mohammed were cautioned for possessing firearms without authority. All three have since been granted bail.

Naa Koryoo’s detention on June 7, 2024, sparked significant unrest among NDC supporters, who gathered at the Cantonments Police Station demanding her release.

The incident drew widespread condemnation, including from former President John Dramani Mahama and other NDC officials, who labeled the detention as politically motivated.

In addition to the firearms charges, Usman Haruna was arrested and remanded into custody in connection with the stabbing of the son of Mavis Hawa Koomson, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, during the disturbances at the Electoral Commission’s office. Haruna is scheduled to reappear in court on June 19, 2024.

The Police Service has emphasized that the arrests were a result of standard procedures and ongoing investigations, which are being conducted without external influence. The case docket has been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney-General for review and advice, as part of the ongoing legal process.

The police have reiterated their commitment to impartiality and due process as they continue their investigations.

The Ghana Police Service has announced that the case file regarding the arrest of Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, is being sent to the Office of the Attorney-General for review and guidance.

According to a statement from the Service, Naa Koryoo was cautioned for “the offence of transfer of firearms without authority” and granted bail along with three others.

Naa Koryoo was detained at the Cantonments Police Station on Friday, June 7, following an invitation, which infuriated NDC supporters who subsequently gathered at the station to demand her release.

Usman Haruna was also arrested in connection with the stabbing and has been remanded into police custody, scheduled to reappear in court on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

Following Naa Koryoo’s release on June 8, the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, warned at a press conference that such arrests would not be tolerated in the future.

NDC will not sit for the Police to bully its members – Asiedu Nketia

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has issued a stern warning to the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to exercise caution as the 2024 general elections approach.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, June 8, following the release of the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, from police custody, General Mosquito (as he is affectionately known) emphasized that no Ghanaian law is designed to intimidate or coerce citizens.

He stated that the NDC will not tolerate any state agency intimidating sympathizers of the party.

He further cautioned that the NDC will persist in its fight until the rights of its members are duly respected.

“The laws of the country are meant for all of us. There should be no discrimination in applying them. We will not be victims of the peace that the country enjoys. Freedom is not free. We will fight for freedom. We will not allow the coercive powers of the state to be used against us.”

Naa Koryoo was detained at the Cantonments Police Station on Friday, June 7, after being summoned, which sparked outrage among NDC supporters who later gathered at the station demanding her release.

Her detention drew widespread condemnation, including from former president John Dramani Mahama.

Additionally, Naa Koryoo’s assistant, Delali Sewarkpor, labeled the detention as political persecution orchestrated by members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a thrilling Copa America warm-up match in Texas, Brazil secured a 3-2 victory over Mexico with a stoppage-time winner from teenage forward Endrick.

Endrick, just 17 years old, scored his third goal in as many appearances for Brazil by heading in a cross from substitute Vinicius Jr, six minutes into added time.

Brazil took an early lead through Fulham midfielder Andreas Pereira, who converted a pass from Savio. Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli then doubled Brazil’s lead shortly after halftime with a tap-in.

Mexico fought back with Julian Quinones scoring in the 73rd minute, and Guillermo Martinez Ayala equalizing in the second minute of stoppage time.

Endrick is set to join Real Madrid from Palmeiras this summer, having agreed to the move in December.

He told RTVE this week: “I hope it is a wonderful story with Real Madrid and to be in Madrid all my life.”

Level of cravings, monies that people need is weird – CJ laments Ghanaians’ greed

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has voiced concern over the growing prevalence of wealth accumulation in Ghanaian society, particularly within the business community.

She highlighted that the relentless pursuit of wealth and possessions has fostered a culture of greed among the populace.

“I don’t understand the level of cravings and the level of monies that people need. The figures are too high and too weird.

“Those close to me, are they buying islands or something. What are they doing? What do they need all of this for?” she asked.

12 persons smuggling 400 bags of cocoa beans outside Ghana arrested after GHC80k bribe offer

Twelve individuals are currently in police custody following an attempt to bribe members of the National Anti-Cocoa Smuggling Taskforce in Kwahu Adawso after intelligence revealed their plan to smuggle 400 bags of cocoa beans.

These twelve individuals are allegedly part of a cocoa smuggling ring.

In a coordinated operation involving personnel from the Ministry of National Security, the Formed Police Unit, and the Ghana Cocoa Board, two trucks with registration numbers AS 2653-12 and GS 4220-12, loaded with cocoa beans destined for Togo, were intercepted.

The arrested individuals include drivers, their assistants, boat operators, and loaders who were caught while attempting to offload the cocoa beans.

Chairman of the Kwahu South Municipal Security Council, Emmanuel Atta Ofori Snr., briefed the media on the arrests. He praised the security forces for proceeding with the arrests despite being offered a bribe of GHÂą80,000.

“We have arrested 12 people who are currently in police custody and I am keenly interested in the outcome so I will monitor the proceedings to make sure the sanctioned laws of the land are tested. I am therefore appealing to the prosecution and judiciary to swiftly adjudicate issues of national concern like this particular one in order for all necessary sanctions and punishment to be meted out to the culprits when found guilty because they are causing financial loss to the state.

“Last month, we made a similar arrest on the ferry, which was a cargo vehicle. We have arrested a tipper truck too, but today it is a Kia Rhino smuggling cocoa, which is an indication that the smugglers are really in business I want to use this medium to announce to them that the Kwahu South Municipal Security Council will not relent but pursue them anytime they want to transit their smuggled goods through our municipality,” said.

This recent arrest marks the third such incident in less than two months within the Kwahu South Municipality.

Cocoa beans are frequently smuggled from Suhum through Adawso to Togo via Dzemeni in the Kwahu Afram Plains area.

Mr. Atta Ofori Snr. has called on his fellow MMDCEs and state security services to exhibit greater patriotism in combating cocoa smuggling. He also made a heartfelt plea to the judiciary to expedite action on this matter, emphasizing the need for swift justice to deter those engaged in smuggling activities.

Bright Simons, the Honorary Vice President of IMANI-Africa, has stated that NextGen Infraco holds an exclusive license to provide 5G services in Ghana for the next ten years.

He elaborated that this would grant NextGen Infraco a monopoly in the telecommunication sector. During his appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Mr Simons revealed that in 2021, MTN applied for a 5G license but was denied access.

As such, he said  “We are working very carefully and diabolically to construct a new monopoly that controls multiple telecom access, that for us is very dangerous.”

Bright Simons further noted that this development would further fragment the telecommunications sector. Additionally, he pointed out that shares of NextGen Infraco are owned by companies involved in a questionable deal.

Hawa Koomson, Police are scared because Naa Koryoo is on the path to victory – Pablo

The National Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress, George Opare Addo, has voiced his strong belief in the electoral success of Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor in the forthcoming parliamentary race for the Awutu Senya East constituency in the Central Region.

Mr Opare Addo, popularly known as Pablo claims that Hawa Koomson is apprehensive about losing the election, which has led to various manipulative tactics, including the unjust arrest of the NDC candidate.

In a post on X on Saturday, June 8, he said, “Every tactic used against Naa Koryoo only confirms her growing strength. She’s the leader Kasoa needs, and we’ll ensure she triumphs. Hawa Koomson and the police are scared because they know Naa Koryoo is on the path to victory. Let’s rally behind Naa and push forward to December.”

    Hawa Koomson, Fisheries Minister

George Opare Addo’s remarks came after the release of Madam Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the National Democratic Congress’ Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East in the Central Region, from police custody on Saturday.

Madam Okunor was initially detained on Sunday, June 2, 2024, and questioned, followed by another arrest and detention on Friday, June 7. Her arrest sparked outrage from the NDC, with flagbearer John Dramani Mahama condemning the action and calling for her immediate release to maintain national stability.

In response, Sammy Gyamfi, the party’s National Communications Officer, called on party members to assemble at the Cantonments Police Station in protest. Demonstrators, clad in the party’s colors and chanting slogans in support of Okunor, voiced their displeasure at what they perceived to be an unjust and politically motivated detention.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor

Madam Okunor was released on Saturday, but the police have yet to provide an explanation for her arrest. Mr. Addo remains adamant that no political maneuvers will sway the strong support for Naa Koryoo.

“Hawa Koomson’s political games cannot change the will of the people. We are all in for Naa Koryoo. Hawa Koomson thinks she can distract from her failures by targeting Naa Koryoo. The people know better and stand stronger with Naa.”

“Hawa Koomson has nothing to offer but failed tactics. Naa Koryoo carries the hope and support of the people, stronger than ever,” he said.

Mr. Addo also urged the national security and the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to maintain impartiality and resist political pressures. He called on them to uphold justice fairly and without bias.

“If you cannot uphold justice and resist political pressure from Nana Addo and Bawumia, you are unfit for your role IGP. We demand action, not compliance,” he said.

In Kumasi, an altercation between two police officers and a civilian escalated after the officers approached the civilian for a search on suspicion of possessing hard drugs or a gun.

The civilian, feeling offended by the officers’ decision to search him, began recording the encounter on his phone. This action further agitated the officers, who were also offended by being recorded.

The incident, which occurred in a public area, quickly attracted the attention of onlookers. Tensions rose as the civilian refused to comply with the officers’ requests and continued to record the interaction.

They engaged in a banter and finally the civilian got hold of his phone.

  • Alcaraz beats Sinner to reach Paris final against Zverev

Alcaraz beats Sinner to reach Paris final against Zverev

Carlos Alcaraz advanced closer to his first French Open title with a thrilling victory over Jannik Sinner in a captivating semi-final match.

The Spanish third seed displayed remarkable resilience, twice overcoming deficits to secure a 2-6 6-3 3-6 6-4 6-3 triumph.

Alcaraz faced a tense moment when he missed two match points, first hitting the net after a baseline exchange and then sending a forehand long. However, he capitalized on his third opportunity to seal the victory.

In the upcoming men’s final on Sunday, Alcaraz will square off against German fourth seed Alexander Zverev.

Sinner, the Italian second seed, battled cramps in the third set as he aimed for consecutive major titles following his Australian Open triumph in January. Despite his efforts, Alcaraz’s determination and stamina prevailed as he grew stronger as the match progressed.

“You have to find the joy in suffering, that’s the key,” Alcaraz said.

“Even more here on clay – long rallies, four-hour matches, five sets, you have to fight. But you have to enjoy suffering.”

The 21-year-old is now just one win away from completing three legs of a career Grand Slam, having already triumphed at the 2022 US Open and last year’s Wimbledon.

In the second semi-final later on Friday, 27-year-old Alexander Zverev won 2-6 6-2 6-4 6-2 against Norwegian seventh seed Casper Ruud.

Zverev played just hours after a trial in Berlin over domestic abuse allegations made by his former girlfriend was discontinued.

The emerging rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz is one that many in tennis believe can fill the void left by the ageing superstars.

Few will forget their epic US Open quarter-final in 2022, which finished at 2:50 am in New York and featured some jaw-dropping exchanges.

This was a different type of contest. Neither player found their best level consistently – and rarely at the same time.

But the match developed into an absorbing encounter where, at times, each man relied on heart as much as their head.

Sinner, 22, made what could be considered a perfect start, taking Alcaraz’s serve with the two break points he created and twice holding to love for a 4-0 lead.

By defending robustly and returning with depth, Sinner forced a flurry of mistakes from Alcaraz’s forehand and continued to bewilder his opponent at the start of the second set.

Another early break put Sinner ahead – but the dynamic swiftly changed.

Alcaraz, finding better angles and more precision with Sinner not hitting as deep, broke twice to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 lead and level the match.

After trading breaks at the start of the third set, Alcaraz could not take four more chances at 2-2 when Sinner struggled with cramp in his playing arm.

Having received treatment, Sinner recovered to break in the next game before he required further attention – this time on his legs – from the physio.

Sinner served out to move back in front. However, a wild overhead at 30-15 4-5 in the fourth set, pushing it wide with Alcaraz stranded, proved costly.

Last year, Alcaraz suffered from full body cramps in his maiden Roland Garros semi-final, blaming it afterwards on the tension of facing the incomparable Novak Djokovic.

This time, he looked more relaxed as the match wore on and ultimately raced ahead to clinch the decider.

  • Manasseh Azure Awuni Writes: A Dutch Passport or a Ghanaian PhD?

Manasseh Azure Awuni Writes: A Dutch Passport or a Ghanaian PhD?

The young man who said having a Dutch passport is better than having a Ghanaian PhD spoke about his reality. And you do not need to argue with him. You can speak about yours.

But if we look beyond the emotions, his perspective is the reality of many Ghanaians. It’s the reason getting a visa to travel tops the list of miracles for which Christians give testimonies in church and offer thanksgiving donations to pastors and prophets.

We don’t have to limit such comparisons to PhDs from Ghana. It can be someone with a PhD from any of the world’s best universities living and working in Ghana. This man would not say the same about someone with a Ghanaian PhD and teaching in a Dutch university.

Maybe, we don’t have to limit it PhD holders. He could have said a medical doctor, or a lawyer or a top journalist, and he would have been right from his standpoint. If holding a Dutch passport offers him better prospects than holding a PhD in Ghana, we should not interpret it to mean an attack on PhD holders in Ghana. It is an indictment on Ghana as a nation, a vote of no confidence against our miserable republic.

The reference to a PhD may be erroneous because a PhD does not always determine success or excellence in a field. I have met incredible PhD holders here in Ghana. We also know many PhD holders who are shallower than the water in a kitchen sink. Having a PhD does not necessarily make one an intellectual.

How do we treat the best of our PhD holders, some of whom also teach in the world’s best universities? A young man who graduates from a university in Ghana and loiters in the corridors of power is more likely to accumulate more money and own more properties in four years than a Ghanaian PhD holder from Harvard who has taught in Ghana for 40 years.

Some of our medical doctors and specialists are leaving in droves because the lives of their seniors do not inspire any hope in the profession. We are losing some of our sharpest minds to the United States, Canada and Europe. Why? The state of Ghana treats them like rubbish.

And have our elders not said if you call your calabash worthless, you lose your right to complain if someone uses it to fetch rubbish?

Instead of attacking those calling us rubbish, let us hold those who have made us look like rubbish accountable for our miserable state. And some of the people we must hold accountable are those we see when we look in our mirrors.

I see the young man’s comparison as an indictment on Ghana, on us as a people. With all humility, I can say I am among the highly regarded journalists in Ghana. But a Ghanaian who migrates to the United States to do a cleaning job can easily look down on my salary. If he says being a cleaner in the United States is better than being a journalist in Ghana, I won’t insult him. I will understand him.

My perspective may be different from his, but that doesn’t mean he is wrong. I may argue that my journalism and its impact give me gratification beyond my salary, but that’s an argument a tiny fraction of Ghanaians are prepared to listen to. Instead of insulting people like this man and Twene Jonas, let’s subject their comments to critical introspection irrespective of how crudely they express them.

A professor—after being promoted from assistant lecturer, lecturer, senior lecturer, and associate professor— earns between 9000 and 12,000 cedis. Even if the allowances are added, it still will not give them the kind of living standards they deserve considering the ever-rising cost of living in Ghana.

If you’re a cleaner or salesperson at a shop in some states in the United States, for instance, you can earn $15 an hour. If you work 8 hours a day, that will amount to $120 a day. The cedi is now 15 to a dollar, so that will translate into 1,800 cedis a day.

In 30 days, this cleaner or salesperson will have 54,000 cedis. If you consider taxes and the cost of living out there and add the fact that some of these people do extra hours and live together to cut costs, this cleaner can save and come back to Ghana to build a house, which a university professor may never dream about.

That is not because the professor is useless. It’s because our nation is hopeless.

Many Ghanaians and Africans I have met in the United States have asked me what next after my studies. Anytime I have said I am heading home after completing my fellowship, the response has been as though I said the stupidest thing in the world.

If we sink so low that going back to your country after schooling in Europe or America is treated like an act of madness, then the problem does not lie with the individual professionals working here in Ghana or their qualifications.

We must look at it as our collective failure. The politicians—the main architects of our woes—are not the only ones to blame for this failure. The journalists who look away and allow politicians and their cronies in business to loot are part of the problem. The judges who take money or consider their promotion and party affiliation before determining who gets justice are part of the problem. The health worker who steals drugs or charges illegal fees or diverts fees into private hands while the hospital becomes a death trap is part of the problem.

The professors from the University of Ghana and UPSA who mounted a staunch defence of the stinking SML scandal ought to realise that if the over $100 million a year betrothed to that company—in Ken Ofori-Atta’s sweetheart deal and the monies wasted in many other such shady deals—were properly channeled into the development of Ghana, our country would be different.

And Ghanaian professionals, including PhD holders who mainly teach in our universities, would receive salaries and enjoy living conditions that would be better than merely holding a Dutch passport.

Note: The Dean of the Graduate School of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Professor Samuel Antwi, and Professor Ransford Gyampoh of the University of Ghana are among the university lecturers who have defended the SML scandal.

Tyson-Paul fight to take place on Nov. 15 in USA

The fight between YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul and former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has been rescheduled to take place on November 15 in Texas. The original date had to be postponed.

In the co-main event, Ireland’s Katie Taylor, the undisputed women’s light-welterweight world champion, will face Puerto Rico’s Amanda Serrano. The bouts will be held at NFL side Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The fights were initially planned for July 20, but Tyson, who turns 58 later this month, had to withdraw due to medical advice following a recent ulcer flare-up.

“Although we had to postpone the fight, I will resume training shortly. I am thankful to the medical staff that treated me,” said Tyson. “While we have a new date, the result will be the same no matter when we fight. Jake Paul is getting knocked out.”

In a post on social media, Paul wrote: “New date, same place, same fate.”

The Tyson-Paul bout, set to be aired on Netflix, has been officially sanctioned as a professional fight with specific conditions. The contest will be limited to eight two-minute rounds, and fighters must wear 14oz gloves instead of the usual 10oz.

Mike Tyson, who last fought professionally in 2005 but participated in an exhibition match in 2020, made history in 1987 by becoming the first heavyweight boxer to hold the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles simultaneously. However, his reign ended abruptly in 1990 with a shocking defeat to Buster Douglas, considered one of the greatest upsets in boxing history.

Jake Paul, 27, boasts a record of nine wins in 10 fights, primarily against former UFC fighters. His only loss came against British boxer Tommy Fury in February 2023.

Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh on Friday, June 7, 2024, paid a courtesy visit to the Ga Mantse, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, at his residence in Accra.

During his visit, Dr Opoku Prempeh emphasized the importance of fostering strong relationships among Ghanaian ethnic groups, citing them as fundamental to the nation’s progress and development.

He highlighted the diverse cultures, traditions, and histories that collectively form the rich tapestry of Ghana.

“Our strength lies in our unity, and our progress is rooted in the cordiality and peaceful coexistence among our diverse ethnic groups,” he said.

The Minister recollected to His Royal Majesty, the extremely affectionate relations that have existed between Asantes and Gas as buttressed, for instance by the archival document of the programme line-up on 25th July 1946 of a durbar in honour of the then Asantehene, my grandfather, Otumfuo Sir Agyeman Prempeh II at the Old Polo Ground, Accra.

Incidentally, the current Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is also scheduled to visit the Ga Mantse on Sunday, 9th June, 2024 in reciprocation of a similar gesture by the Ga Mantse, he added.

The Manhyia South law maker continued, “The UP tradition, front runner for the present day New Patriotic Party was not the endeavour of a single ethnic group, but a collective effort of Ghanaians from various backgrounds and so we are always reminded of the foundational principles of inclusivity and unity.”

The Ga Mantse expressed his satisfaction at meeting with the Energy Minister, highlighting the longstanding cordial relations that have existed between himself and the Asantehene. He noted that these relations date back to the time of their forebears.

“I believe that, we must guard the peace we have in our country jealously because it is in that co-existence that we can have development. I am always inclined to people who are not divisive and so I am happy to see you”he said

He continued, “On Sunday, I look forward to receiving my brother, Otumfuo and I believe it will be in furtherance of the close bond of affection and the great historical ties.”

The Energy Minister had previously visited the Awoamefia of Anlo land, Torgbui Sri, and the Omanhene of Sefwi Wiawso, as part of efforts to strengthen the relationship between the political class and traditional authorities.

  • You’re not above the law, the day of accountability is near – NDC warns Hawa Koomson

You’re not above the law, the day of accountability is near – NDC warns Hawa Koomson

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has cautioned the MP for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, over her alleged illegal activities and her role in the arrest of Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, NDC’s candidate contesting the 2024 parliamentary election in the Awutu Senya East constituency of the Central Region.

Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor who was arrested and detained by the police on Friday, June 7, and was released the following Saturday morning after intense backlash from the opposition party.

Addressing the media at a press conference after the release, the NDC cautioned the Police to be professional in carrying out its mandate.

Mr Asiedu Nketia also cautioned Hawa Koomson to desist from engaging in any activities that contradict the laws of the country.

He noted that despite the forces that may be supporting the MP, “the day of accountability is near.”

The police have not issued any public statements regarding the arrest.

The initial disclosure of Okunor’s detention came from the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi. Gyamfi highlighted that the police provided no explanation for her arrest and detention, characterizing it as an attempt to silence the NDC.

On Sunday, June 2, 2024, the Ghana Police Service announced the arrest of three individuals, including Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, for possessing a firearm without lawful authority. They were apprehended while traveling in a Honda CRV near the Electoral Commission Office at Ofaakor. A pump-action gun with four rounds of ammunition was seized during the arrest.

In an interview on Wednesday, June 5, Okunor clarified that she was invited by the police and not formally arrested. She maintained that the firearm found in her car was legally licensed and was obtained for self-protection against the incumbent NPP MP and Minister for Fisheries, Hawa Koomson. Okunor alleged that the police had failed to protect her during previous altercations with the MP, where she was attacked and gunshots were fired.

Before Okunor’s arrest related to firearm possession, a clash between NDC and NPP supporters occurred at the EC’s office in Ofaakor during the ongoing votes transfer exercise. This altercation resulted in the stabbing of Ato Koomson, the son of the incumbent MP and Minister for Fisheries, Hawa Koomson. The suspect involved in the stabbing has also been arrested and detained.

It remains uncertain whether Okunor’s subsequent arrest is linked to the stabbing incident or solely related to the firearm possession charge.

Asiedu Nketia sat at the CID’s office for over 6 hours – Sammy Gyamfi on ‘fight’ to get Naa Koryoo released

The Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has fought claims that the party’s Chairman abandoned party supporters that were present at the Cantonments Police Station in Accra, demanding the release of Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the party’s parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East in the Central Region.

Former Deputy General Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has slammed the Chairman of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia for allegedly abandoning party folks.

Okunor’s detention on Friday evening sparked widespread outrage among NDC members and sympathizers.

Following her arrest, the party’s flagbearer condemned the police action and called for her immediate release to maintain national stability.

Sammy Gyamfi, the party’s National Communications Officer, urged party members to assemble at the Cantonments Police Station to protest the detention.

The demonstrators, clad in the party’s colors and chanting slogans supporting Okunor, expressed their anger at what they perceive as an unjust and politically motivated arrest.

Engaging the supporters, Mr Nketia, in a video shared by Mr Anyidoho expressed his frustration over the police to make known details on the arrest of Naa Koryoo who detained after an order from above.

He noted that he told the officers that he is leaving Deputy Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Mustapha Gbande in charge and would not be held responsible for what takes place after his absence.

Reacting to this, Mr Anyidoho in a post on X wrote, “How does a general lead people to battle and tell them that he is abandoning them and will not be responsible for anything that happens to them?”

But engaging the media after her release on Saturday morning, Mr Gyamfi noted that Mr Asiedu Nketia was at the CID office engaging the authorities for over 6 hours throughout the night.

Former President John Mahama issued a statement alleging that the Inspector General of Police, George Dampare, ordered the detention under the instructions of National Security Minister Albert Kan Dapaah. He suggested this move was intended to intimidate the NDC candidate in her campaign against the incumbent Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hawa Koomson, in the upcoming elections.

Mahama warned that such actions could heighten political tensions and threaten national peace and stability ahead of the crucial 2024 elections. He demanded Okunor’s immediate release and called on the police and government to uphold justice and fairness.

The police station was heavily guarded, with law enforcement officers present to maintain order.

    #DumsorMustStop demo takes place today

The #DumsorMustStop vigil is set to proceed as planned today, Saturday, June 8, according to the organisers.

Participants are expected to assemble at the University of Ghana, Legon, frontage at 2 p.m.

The decision to go ahead with the protest comes after the Ghana Police Service attempted to stop the vigil by filing an injunction application, citing concerns about its proximity to a security installation.

However, the organisers, led by Henry Osei, announced during a press conference on Wednesday, June 5, that all issues with the police had been resolved.

Mr. Osei assured the public that the protest would be peaceful, and the police had promised to provide maximum protection for the event.

The #DumsorMustStop vigil aims to increase pressure on the government to address the country’s power challenges, which have led to intermittent power supply in many parts of Ghana during peak hours.

The organisers attribute the crisis to the government’s alleged failure to pay for the required fuel, as claimed by independent power producers.

Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Awutu Senya East constituency in the Central Region, who was arrested and detained by the police on Friday, June 7, has been released.

She was released on Saturday morning, although the police have yet to publicly comment on the issue.

The NDC has called an immediate press conference to address the arrest, which was initially brought to light by the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi. Mr. Gyamfi stated that the police did not provide any reason for her arrest and subsequent detention, characterizing the situation as an attempt to silence the NDC.

Grassroots supporters of the NDC gathered at the Cantonments Police Station in Accra, where Okunor was detained, to show their support.

The arrest stemmed from an incident on Sunday, June 2, 2024, when three individuals, including Okunor, were arrested at Ofaakor for possessing a firearm without lawful authority. They were apprehended while traveling in a Honda CRV near the Electoral Commission Office at Ofaakor, and a pump-action gun with four rounds of ammunition was seized from the vehicle.

This altercation resulted in the stabbing of Ato Koomson, son of the incumbent MP and Minister for Fisheries, who was hospitalized. The suspect involved in the stabbing has also been arrested and detained.

It remains unclear whether Okunor’s subsequent arrest is connected to the stabbing incident or solely pertains to the firearm possession charge.

Celtics beat Mavericks in game one of NBA Finals

Jaylen Brown delivered a standout performance as the Boston Celtics displayed dominance in a 107-89 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in game one of the NBA Finals.

The 27-year-old led the scoring with 22 points, supported by five teammates who also achieved double figures, as the Celtics pursued their 18th title win.

The Celtics’ defense was formidable, contributing to a commanding 29-point lead in the first half at the TD Garden in Massachusetts.

Despite a strong effort from Mavericks‘ star Luka Doncic, who secured 30 points and 10 rebounds, narrowing the deficit to eight points in the third quarter, the home team pulled away decisively in the final quarter.

Kristaps Porzingis made a comeback for the Celtics after a 10-game absence due to a calf injury during the playoffs. Facing his former team, the Latvian contributed 20 points, including 11 from rebounds.

While the Mavericks may draw encouragement from their performance in the third quarter, it was an overall disappointing night for the Texan side.

Boston will host game two of the best-of-seven series on Sunday, aiming to surpass the Los Angeles Lakers, who also have 17 NBA Championship titles. They are aware that historically, 70% of NBA Finals have been won by the team victorious in game one.

Ghana’s gold production grew to 4 million ounces in 2023 – Ghana Chamber of Mines

Ghana’s gold production saw an 8.3 percent increase, reaching 4 million ounces in 2023, up from 3.7 million ounces the previous year, as reported by the Ghana Chamber of Mines.

This rise was largely due to a surge in output from small-scale miners, which offset the decline in production from the large-scale sector.

This achievement represents the highest gold production level for Ghana since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

In the large-scale sector, gold output dropped from 3.1 million ounces in 2022 to 2.9 million ounces in 2023, marking a 4.9 percent decrease.

Conversely, the small-scale sector experienced a significant growth of 70.6 percent, increasing from 0.66 million ounces to 1.1 million ounces during the same period.

Looking ahead to 2024, gold production is expected to rise to between 4.3 and 4.5 million ounces, with new projects such as Newmont’s Ahafo North and Cardinal Resource’s Namdini Gold Mine playing a key role in this growth.

Additionally, manganese production is projected to increase to 5 million tonnes, bauxite output is expected to range between 1.2 million and 1.5 million tonnes, and diamond exports are anticipated to reach between 220,000 and 250,000 carats.

Morgan answers Scotland’s Euro 2024 call

Lewis Morgan had planned to spend quality time with his sisters in New York City. Instead, the Red Bulls forward found himself leaving them behind, hailing a yellow taxi across town, and flying over the Atlantic to join Scotland’s Euro 2024 journey.

From Central Park to the Allianz Arena in the blink of an eye.

Just a few weeks ago, the former St Mirren and Celtic player wasn’t even in the conversation for the squad. Now, he has secured a spot in Scotland’s team for the major tournament, which includes the opening game against hosts Germany on Friday.

His inclusion was announced in a surprising call-up on Thursday. The news caught many off guard, including Morgan’s siblings, who had traveled to the Big Apple for a family reunion.

“I actually had my sister out visiting, so I got caught short,” he said. “My other sister has just landed in New York right now. It’s a bit bittersweet.

“Everyone in my family was obviously overjoyed at the news. It’s a massive opportunity.

“It’s been hectic. I found out on Tuesday there was a chance. I got told I was getting called into the squad and it was just about getting here as quick as I could.”

The 27-year-old last played for Scotland six years ago under Steve Clarke’s predecessor, Alex McLeish.

During that period, the Tartan Army witnessed their team end a 23-year wait to qualify for a major tournament, struggle in a Covid-restricted Euros, miss out on a World Cup, and then secure another spot on the European stage.

Meanwhile, Morgan watched with a mix of joy, pride, and a touch of envy. Despite being across the pond, he never lost hope.

Frank Kwaku Appiah, better known as Appiah Stadium, has reached out to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the Ashanti Regional Minister for assistance in a defamation lawsuit filed against him by Kofi Job, a road contractor.

Appiah Stadium, a well-known NDC supporter and frequent caller, is accused of making defamatory remarks about Kofi Job, who is based in Kumasi. In retaliation, Kofi Job is seeking GHC 5 million in damages and a retraction of the alleged false statements.

In an effort to settle the matter peacefully, Appiah Stadium has appealed to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, and the Ashanti Regional Minister. He hopes that their esteemed positions can help mediate a resolution and avoid a lengthy legal battle.

This situation highlights the considerable respect and influence that Otumfuo and the Regional Minister hold in the Ashanti Region. Their intervention could set a precedent for using traditional and governmental mediation in legal disputes in Ghana.

Appiah Stadium approached Otumfuo Osei Tutu II during the Green Ghana Day tree planting event at the Kumasi Golf Park, following Otumfuo’s morning golf session.

Iceland dents England’s final preparations for Euro 2024

England wrapped up their Euro 2024 preparations with a disappointing performance, suffering a defeat against Iceland at Wembley.

Manager Gareth Southgate made several changes to the team that won against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Monday, but the display was lackluster and disappointing.

Iceland, known for their victory over England at Euro 2016, took advantage of poor defending, with keeper Aaron Ramsdale, standing in for Jordan Pickford, possibly able to do better with Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson’s early goal.

England had their chances, with Harry Kane missing a great opportunity and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, among the better performers, also having opportunities. However, England looked rusty as they prepared for their Euro 2024 opener against Serbia on June 16.

Throughout the match, England appeared vulnerable at the back, and Iceland had chances to extend their lead.

Defender John Stones was substituted at half-time due to injury, raising concerns with Harry Maguire already ruled out of the tournament.

The loss to Iceland, ranked 72nd in the Fifa rankings, was met with jeers from the crowd, reflecting a poor performance. England’s only shot on target came late in the game, highlighting their struggles.

While the match was part of England’s preparations, the defeat to Iceland is concerning. The players received a muted send-off from the fans, indicating the disappointment in their performance.

Southgate will hope this match helped shake off some rust, but the team will need to improve significantly before Euro 2024 begins.

  • You should have engaged health facilities before announcing free renal treatment – Techiman North MP to gov’t

You should have engaged health facilities before announcing free renal treatment – Techiman North MP to gov’t

Techiman North Member of Parliament, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has emphasized the importance of the government coordinating with health facilities to develop a plan for providing free dialysis treatment to renal patients before announcing the initiative officially.

Her remarks come in response to concerns raised by some renal patients at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital who continue to pay for dialysis treatment. This is because the government has not formally communicated the directive to stop demanding payment.

During an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on June 7, the Member of the Health Committee of Parliament suggested that if the government had collaborated with health facility management, these issues could have been avoided. She also acknowledged criticisms regarding the poor preparation leading up to the announcement.

“You see dialysis is a life support procedure and we all know that it is difficult for people to pay. I know there are patients who get help from family, once the announcement is made people will be reluctant to  help them. So, I am also of the opinion that the preparation should have been adequate. There should have been a discussion with the health facilities as the modalities for the procedure to be done free of charge,” she said.

Madam Ofosu-Adjare highlighted that the committee is actively engaging with the Controller and Accountant General’s Department and other stakeholders.

This is to ensure the continuous and prompt payment of funds to hospitals providing free renal treatment, with the aim of sustaining lives.

In a related development, the Techiman North MP proposed redirecting the COVID-19 fund instituted by the government towards healthcare delivery instead of supporting government budgets.

“…We are still taking the Covid Fund. It should be directed at our health and not to support government budget because this fund is for health

“I am of the opinion that government should be looking at funding the National Health Insurance Authority and so we should look at funding so that these people can be catered for,” she said.

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) announced on June 3 the initiation of a six-month free dialysis support program for renal patients from June to December 2024.

The support, outlined in a statement from the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) dated June 1, categorizes beneficiaries into two groups: vulnerable individuals (patients under 18 and over 60 years old) and individuals aged 18 to 59 years.

NPP flags fly half-mast in honour of late Upper West Chairman

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has paid tribute to its late Upper West Chairman, Dr. Saanbaye Basilide Kangbere. The party has also ordered flags to be flown at half-mast in his honor.

Dr. Kangbere, fondly known as Chairman Heavy Weight in political circles, passed away at his home in Adjringano, Accra, on Friday, June 7, 2024.

In a statement released on Friday, the NPP reminisced about the late Chairman’s remarkable journey.

Despite his humble beginnings, he successfully passed his Common Entrance Examinations in Owlo, a small town in the Daffiama-Bussie-Issa district of the Upper West Region, and went on to study at the prestigious Daffiama Secondary School.

“Mr. Kangbere would again achieve another academic milestone as he passed with distinction, his Sixth Form Examinations before gaining admission to be trained as a teacher in a College of Education and subsequently to the University of Ghana where he majored in English.”

“As fate would have it, Mr. Kangbere would develop a relentless passion for politics and other matters of social concern while studying at the University of Ghana and became part of student activist groups. Upon his election as Secretary of the Students Representatives Council, he would team up with young men like Frederick Worsemao Armah Blay from 1977 to1978, and fearlessly opposed clandestine attempts by the Supreme Military Council of Ignatius Kutu Acheampong to impose the so-called Union Government (UNIGOV) on Ghanaians,” it stated.

The NPP highlighted that Dr. Kangbere’s accomplishments extended beyond politics, as he also pursued careers in teaching and business.

“In the most part of his adult life, he taught for several years in numerous deprived communities in the Upper West Region and Nigeria, and later in the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. He also set up several English teaching schools in Saudi Arabia, some of which are still operational.”

“Mr. Kangbere was a devoted Catholic, husband, father of five and also a noble family man on whose shoulders several people from across the length and breadth of Ghana and even beyond were nurtured,” it stated.

Despite the loss, the NPP expressed comfort in Dr. Kangbere’s legacy of hard work and dedication to the country. The party also extended its deepest condolences to his bereaved family, especially his wife and children, and to the people of the Upper West Region for the loss of such a distinguished son of the land.

“As a mark of respect in his honour, the Party directs that all Party flags fly at half-mast for the next seven days,” it added.

Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has condemned the Ghana Police Service for allegedly detaining the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency.

According to Mr. Gyamfi, the police have not provided any reason for the arrest and subsequent detention of Madam Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor.

In a social media post, he criticized the development as an attempt to silence the NDC.

Giving more details, Sammy Gyamfi explained that, “Her offense is simply that a weapon (gun) was found in her car. The said weapon is registered in her name. All the necessary registration documents have been submitted to the Police.

“Unlike, Hawa Koomson who in 2020 actually fired a gun at a registration center, Naa Koryoo has not fired any gun or weapon. Yet, the
Police service is hellbent on detaining her.”

On Sunday, June 2, 2024, the Ghana Police Service announced that three individuals were arrested at Ofaakor for possessing a firearm without lawful authority.

The suspects, including Ms. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, Mustapha Mohammed, and Abdul Aziz Musah, were apprehended while traveling in a Honda CRV with registration number GX-2044-19 near the Electoral Commission Office at Ofaakor.

During the arrest, a pump-action gun with four rounds of ammunition was seized from the vehicle.

In an interview on Wednesday, June 5, Ms. Okunor clarified that she was invited by the police rather than formally arrested.

She stressed that the firearm found in her car was legally licensed and explained that she obtained it for self-protection against the incumbent NPP MP and Minister for Fisheries, Hawa Koomson.

Ms. Okunor claimed that the police had failed to protect her during previous altercations, where the MP allegedly attacked her and even fired gunshots.

“I have never been arrested. Yes, I was invited to the police station. I was not arrested. I was there because I had to go there.

“My driver was arrested, and my security guard was arrested because a licensed gun was found in my car
It was far away from the registration centre,” she said.

Prior to the arrest related to firearm possession, a clash between NDC and NPP supporters occurred at the EC’s office in Ofaakor during the ongoing votes transfer exercise.

This altercation resulted in the stabbing of Ato Koomson, son of the incumbent MP and Minister for Fisheries, Hawa Koomson, who was subsequently hospitalized. The suspect involved in the stabbing has also been arrested and detained.

It remains unclear whether the subsequent arrest of the NDC Parliamentary Candidate is connected to the stabbing incident or solely pertains to the firearm possession charge.

Free Naa Koryoo now for the sake of justice, Ghana’s stability – Mahama tells IGP

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has urged the Ghana Police Service to promptly release Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency in the Central Region.

Mr. Mahama conveyed this appeal in a Facebook post on the evening of Friday, June 7, 2024.

“I urge the IGP to urgently reconsider his actions and release Naa Koryoo immediately for the sake of justice and the stability of our nation.”

The detention of Madam Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor was initially brought to light by the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi.

Mr. Gyamfi stated that the police have not provided any reason for her arrest and subsequent detention. In a social media post, he characterized the situation as an effort to silence the NDC.

Police service is hell-bent on detaining her.”

He urged all party faithful to throng the Cantonments Police Station in Accra where Naa Koryoo Okunor has been detained.

The following public commentary on the arrest came from Mr John Mahama, the party’s 2024 flagbearer and former president, who said: “There is no justification for the decision by the Inspector General of Police George Dampare, on the orders of the National Security Advisor, Albert Kan Dapaah, to detain a Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency in Police custody.”

“This action, taken on the instructions of the National Security Secretariat, will needlessly raise the political temperature in the country and spark avoidable tension. The Police Service and the IGP must not allow themselves to be used to hang the peace and stability of our nation months before crucial national elections. I call on the IGP, the Peace Council, the government, and the people of Ghana to recognise that justice is not just a moral imperative but a crucial prerequisite for maintaining peace and stability in a nation.”

“We cannot allow the police service to be used to stifle opposition and intimidate innocent Ghanaians and political opponents in the run-up to the 2024 elections. Clearly, the intention to detain her after she had already been granted bail is an attempt to intimidate the NDC Parliamentary candidate in her quest to unseat the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hawa Koomson, in the Awutu Senya East Constituency.”

“It is high time the police fulfilled their duty to serve and protect all citizens, irrespective of their political affiliations. #JusticeForNaaKoryoo. #FreeNaaKoryooNow.”

  • Ghana’s $360m third tranche to be approved by IMF Board by end of June

Ghana’s $360m third tranche to be approved by IMF Board by end of June

Ghana’s second review program for a third tranche of US$360 million is anticipated to be presented to the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) by the end of June 2024.

This review aims to secure approval and the subsequent disbursement of additional funds under the country’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program with the IMF, supporting economic recovery and stability.

“Our aim is to bring the review to the IMF’s Executive Board for approval before the end of June,” Julie Kovack, the Director of the Communications Department at the IMF said this during a press briefing on Thursday, June 6.

“This would give Ghana access to US$360 million in financing, bringing the total to about US$1.6 billion in disbursements since May of 2023,” she noted.

This development follows the country reaching a staff-level agreement on economic policies and reforms for the second review of the program on April 13, 2024.

Since then, Ghana has received a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) from its Official Creditors and is currently reviewing it before signing to formally conclude negotiations.

Looking ahead, steadfast implementation of policies and reforms will be crucial to fully and durably restore macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability in Ghana.

Reflecting on the progress of the three-year loan-support program, Ms. Kovack highlighted that the Ghanaian authorities’ strong policy and reform efforts are yielding results, with signs of economic stabilization beginning to emerge.

“For example, growth in 2023 was higher than we had initially envisaged,” she said.

Nigerian underage girls engage in prostitution after being trafficked to Ghana

Underage girls from Imo State, Nigeria, have been discovered in Ghana, forced into prostitution by their trafficker.

An Instagram video reveals five to six girls, all under 18, being questioned about their situation. They disclosed that a young man had brought them to Ghana. One victim mentioned that they have been in the country for at least two months.

Three of the minors are sisters, reportedly given away by their father, who resides in Imo State.

The situation has sparked widespread calls for the arrest of the trafficker responsible for their exploitation.

Three years ago, some Nigerian teenagers who were trafficked to Ghana to allegedly engage in prostitution urged the country’s authorities to act fast in order to stem the inflow of more girls from neighbouring countries.

The girls, who are aged between 15 and 18, told Citi News they were lured into the country by a syndicate, under the pretext of being employed as shop attendants and house helps.

On arrival in Ghana, however, they were forced to operate as sex workers.

The teenagers, who were made to operate in Kasoa, Budumburam and East Legon, said their lives were threatened when they initially refused to heed the instructions of their “madams”.

In a brief remark, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasized the importance of protecting and sustainably managing natural resources, in alignment with the government’s climate action plans.

He cautioned against the destruction of forest covers and river bodies, commending the government for its efforts to protect the country’s vegetative cover.

Benito Owusu-Bio, Chairperson of the National Green Ghana Planning Committee, paid special tribute to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his consistent support since the inception of Green Ghana Day.

He noted that Otumfuo’s commitment highlights the significance and importance of the Green Ghana project and urged all Ghanaians to participate in the event.

“Your Royal Majesty, this year, the President of the Republic has set the national target to 10 million trees. The reason is to give us the avenue to nurture and take care of the trees planted over the last three years.  So, we expect to plant at least 10 million trees on this day and Asanteman has always risen to the challenge and this year will not be an exception,” he stated.

“As we plant the trees today, let us make conscious efforts to continue nurturing these plants to help them grow to maturity to ensure a higher survival rate.  Your Royal Majesty, on behalf of the President, I wish to thank you and Asanteman for your support in the fight against galamsey and your desire to uplift the image of the Asante Kingdom,” he added.

Mr. Osei-Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Minister, highlighted the importance of the tree planting exercise for the country, emphasizing the vital role trees play in the survival of humanity.

We have planted 42 million trees since 2021 – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo announced that Ghana has planted 42 million trees over the last three years as part of efforts to combat deforestation and promote sustainability.

He credited the achievement to the unwavering support of the Ghanaian people, speaking at the Green Ghana Day ceremony at Burma Camp.

“In the last three years, with your unwavering support, we have planted some 42 million trees, most of which are thriving. Today we have an opportunity to add at least 10 million trees.”

It is unknown if all these 42 million trees planted have survived.

President Akufo-Addo noted that reaching this milestone would bring the total number of trees planted to an impressive 52 million in just four years.

He hailed this as an incredible achievement, highlighting the collective effort and commitment of Ghanaians and all contributors to the program’s success. The President also praised the Minister of Lands and Minerals Resources, Samuel Jinapor, for spearheading the initiative.

“I thank you, my fellow Ghanaians, and anyone who has contributed to the success of this programme.”

He also expressed confidence in surpassing this year’s target with the same level of support and dedication that has driven the initiative thus far.

The Green Ghana Day event is part of a nationwide effort to restore the country’s forest cover, combat climate change, and enhance the natural environment.

Ghana isn’t winning ‘galamsey’ fight due to lack of logistics – Forestry Commission

The Forestry Commission in the Greater Accra Region has identified the lack of logistical support, including vehicles and motorbikes, at its district offices as a major obstacle in combating illegal mining and other degrading activities.

The commission also expressed concern over delays in the release of funds for forestry development activities, which has further compounded the situation.

Speaking at a brief ceremony organized by Parliament ahead of a tree-planting exercise, the Deputy Greater Accra Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, George Agbenowoshi, emphasized the challenges the Commission is facing.

“Logistics such as pickup vehicles and motorbikes for our field operations and activities at the various districts stations are challenging and we cannot
and that makes it difficult to fight forest offences in our forest reserves.

“These offenses include illegal mining activities, illegal farming, bushfires, illegal lumbering, illegal logging and chainsaw activities across the country.

“We also have the challenge of timely release of funds for forestry-related activities including plantation activities at our sector and issues sent to court have been there for years without redress. Issues of mining activities involving Chinese that take an interpreter to translate are often thrown out of court as a result of the lack of an interpreter.”

In his address, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin pledged to procure a pickup vehicle and two motorbikes for the Forestry Commission to enhance its operational capacity.

“I want to promise the Forestry Commission that we will procure a pickup and two motorbikes to help facilitate your activities.”

GRIDCo, National Security to remove squatters under high-tension lines

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and National Security are collaborating to remove all unauthorized occupants living under high-tension power lines across Ghana.

This move follows financial strains caused by repairs at Kwame Nkrumah Circle after a recent fire outbreak.

Despite existing laws to protect these areas from encroachment, enforcement has been challenging. GRIDCo’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Dzifa Bampoh, explained on Joy FM’s midday news that the nationwide exercise aims to clear all unauthorized individuals near the high-tension lines, ensuring the safety and integrity of the power infrastructure.

She added that “in fact nobody should be living under a transmission line, so this is not just about this ECOMOG area; there are slum communities at Fiesta Royale; there’s Adjiringanor, Ashiaman. I mean, it’s not just even in Accra; we have Kumasi; we have the Western Region.

“We have a lot of galamsey activities that impact even the structure of these towers and because we do have legislation that backs it, it makes it an offense for anyone, persons, or institutions to be on these lines.”

Mrs. Bampoh also noted the Greater Accra Regional Minister’s commitment to preventing unauthorized human settlements near GRIDCo facilities, which is reassuring.

Despite GRIDCo’s efforts to enforce these regulations, Mrs. Bampoh highlighted that the company has faced resistance from various quarters, making it challenging to fully implement the necessary measures.

“But it does not end with this settlement. GRIDCo needs significant support to execute a campaign that clears people from under the transmission lines”.

Mrs Bampoh explained that ‘right-of-way’ challenges are among the most difficult aspects of GRIDCo’s operations, given the company’s responsibility for some 6,700 kilometres of transmission lines across the country.

“These are very high kilovolts of transmission lines that, God forbid, if were to touch anyone, that person will turn to ashes.

“So, we will continue to do what we can,” she noted.

Speaking with Citi News, Robert Hackman, the Gomoa East NADMO coordinator, mentioned that his team is working with various agencies to address and prevent further complications.

“We evacuated people from their homes and sheltered them at the nearest Pentecost Church. I had a call from my director general and that of my regional minister that they are bringing in relief items. In fact, the contractor met us before the commencement of the work but unfortunately, this incident happened.

“I don’t want to blame him that much. I think it is natural but going forward, I think he [the contractor] is going to collaborate with us in any technical advice that we have to give so that together, we can make this work easier for both of us.”

More than 150 homes in Gomoa Mampong were impacted when sections of the highway collapsed following the rerouting of the Ayensu River by a contractor working on the Kasoa-Cape Coast Highway.

It is reported that over 2,000 individuals have been rendered homeless as a result.

NDC executives in Amenfi Central suspended for misconduct

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has suspended several executives in the Amenfi Central Constituency over alleged anti-party activities.

The suspended officials include the constituency chairman, the organiser, and both the main and deputy women’s organisers.

These executives took legal action against the party and its parliamentary candidate for the area, Joana Gyan Cudjoe, accusing her of forging party cards.

Consequently, Joana Gyan Cudjoe has been injuncted for forgery and for presenting herself as the parliamentary candidate-elect for the NDC in the constituency.

Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, announced that the suspension will last for six months and has been referred to the party’s national disciplinary committee for further review.

“If anybody has a problem with the process that elected her as a parliamentary candidate in that constituency, why did the person wait and we have gone through all the processes, finished the elections swore her in as the parliamentary candidate, trained her and prepared her for the final election then you are in court to say that you have a problem with the processes that elected her as a parliamentary candidate.

This is clearly anti-party conduct; a calculated attempt to hold the party’s interest to ransom. But the party will respect the ruling of the court. We are looking further and any other person whose conduct will also constitute misconduct under the constitution will follow suit until we clean that constituency and prepare it for the 2024 elections,” he stated.

Ya-Na Abukari II commended the government for instituting the Green Ghana initiative to help recover lost vegetation in the country.

He encouraged Ghanaians to take good care of the planted seedlings, ensuring they grow to maturity to achieve the initiative’s purpose.

Additionally, he cautioned the youth against engaging in illegal tree-logging and bush-burning activities that harm the vegetation.

“It’s such a shame to see our landscape from the windows of aircrafts, looking down to see my beloved land being wasted away and it’s negative implications on the output of our farmers and our possible inabilities to feed our families in the future”.

The Overlord of Dagbon expressed that his community would wholeheartedly adopt the commendable tree planting initiative, pledging their support and readiness to protect the environment.

Speaking at the Gbewa Palace, Akwasi Konadu acknowledged and thanked His Royal Highness and the people of Dagbon for their continued support in the afforestation drive.

He reiterated that the Green Ghana Project aims to intensify afforestation and reforestation of Ghana’s degraded landscapes, highlighting the urgent need for every Ghanaian to participate in planting more trees to combat climate change and environmental pollution.

Mr. Konadu explained that this year’s theme, “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow,” targets growing plants for sustainable environmental conservation to ensure future well-being and support human survival.

He called on all citizens to participate in this year’s planting to secure a greener future.

Akufo-Addo preaches a greener future as Ghana plants 10 million trees today

President Akufo-Addo has delivered a passionate speech at Burma Camp, Accra, on Friday, June 7, to commemorate the 2024 edition of Green Ghana Day, advocating for a greener future.

Addressing the assembled dignitaries, officials, and citizens, the President stressed the urgent need to combat climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, emphasizing the vital role forests play in this effort.

Highlighting the severe impacts of climate change, President Akufo-Addo pointed to the critical situation in South Sudan and the Horn of Africa, where extreme heatwaves are threatening human habitation.

He noted that air pollution causes approximately 6.7 million deaths annually and that biodiversity loss continues to jeopardize ecosystems worldwide.

“The science tells us that forests play a crucial role in sustaining life on earth and tackling the triple planetary crises,” the President stated.

President Akufo-Addo highlighted that Agriculture, Forest, and Land Use (AFOLU) activities significantly contribute to Ghana’s greenhouse gas emissions.

He emphasized the crucial role of forests in carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and pollution control.

Since the inception of the Green Ghana Project, over 42 million trees have been planted, and the goal for 2024 is to add another 10 million, bringing the total to 52 million trees in just four years.

This ambitious target aligns with Ghana’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 64 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2030.

President Akufo-Addo called on all Ghanaians to embrace the theme of this year’s Green Ghana Day, “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow.”

President Akufo-Addo urged citizens from all walks of life to participate in the national tree planting exercise, emphasizing the importance of nurturing the planted trees to maturity to achieve a sustainable future.

He also called on the private sector to support this noble venture, stressing that it should not be a burden on the public treasury.

Special commendation was given to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, for his leadership in sustaining the Green Ghana Project and the One Student One Tree initiative, which instills the importance of environmental stewardship in the youth.

The President concluded by calling for a collective effort to sustain the gains made over the past three years.

“Let us go out, not only to plant trees, but grow them for a ‘Green Tomorrow.’ This is a duty we owe not only to the current generation but to generations yet to come,” he declared.

In his address, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, praised President Akufo-Addo’s unwavering support for the Green Ghana initiative. He highlighted the President’s leadership in environmental protection and forest restoration since the program’s inception in 2021.

Mr. Jinapor expressed gratitude to the Ghana Armed Forces for their vital role in the program’s organizational success, particularly in the logistics and distribution of seedlings. He also announced their contribution of planting over 1,000 tree seedlings as part of their quota to support the 2024 Green Ghana Day.

The Minister outlined Ghana’s significant strides in global forest management and climate action. At COP26 in Glasgow, Ghana played a pivotal role in the Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration to halt and reverse forest loss by 2030.

This leadership has been recognized globally, leading to Ghana co-chairing the Forest and Climate Leaders’ Partnership (FCLP) alongside the United States. This partnership aims to balance forest protection with food production and advance nature-based climate solutions.

Highlighting the impact of these initiatives, Jinapor noted that Ghana was the second country in Africa and the third globally to receive results-based payments from the World Bank’s Carbon Fund for reducing emissions.

The Green Ghana Day has become a cornerstone of these efforts, with the survival rate of planted trees increasing significantly each year, from 67% in 2021 to 81% in 2023. This year’s theme, “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow,” reflects the commitment to not just planting trees but ensuring their growth and contribution to the fight against climate change, he added.

The Minister called on all Ghanaians to support the initiative, emphasizing the availability of adequate seedlings across the country and the measures in place to ensure high survival rates for the planted trees. He echoed the President’s call for collective action to secure a greener and more sustainable future for the country and the planet.

With this rallying call, President Akufo-Addo and Minister Jinapor reinforced Ghana’s commitment to creating a greener and more sustainable future.

Mr. John Allotey, the CEO of the Forestry Commission in his vote of thanks appreciated the President for his immense support and guidance over the 4year Green Ghana Day and applauded the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources for his excellent leadership that has aided in the success of this worthy cause.
