You will suffer if you keep disrespecting the soul of the NDC – Anyidoho tells Mahama

Former Deputy General Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has accused the party of not holding any event to commemorate its 32nd anniversary.

According to him, the opposition party also failed to observe the 45th anniversary of the June 4th Revolution, a significant event in Ghana’s history.

According to him, the ethos of the June 4 coup forms the foundation of the NDC, and anyone who claims to be a member of the party must commit to observing June 4 and abiding by its principles.

As such he chided the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, holding him responsible for the party’s alleged failure.

“So, the NDC did not hold any Event yesterday to mark our 32nd birthday? They ignored June 4, days ago & they have ignored this one too. The “Regime Change” media houses shd get it into their heads that if JM continues to disrespect the soul of the NDC he will suffer for it,” he wrote in a post on X.

Meanwhile, flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has stated that the next NDC government will build a Ghana united in purpose, stable in governance, and developed in opportunity for all.

In his message for the NDC’s 32nd anniversary on June 10, the former President assured the rank and file of the party of his commitment to the NDC’s powerful campaign message of “Building the Ghana we want together.”

According to him, the message is not just a slogan but a call to action that echoes the party’s motto.

“Our party’s motto, ‘Unity, Stability, and Development’, is not just a slogan but a guiding principle for our daily work. It reminds us that only by coming together as one nation can we achieve the stability and development that we all aspire to.

“As we prepare for the December elections, I am reminded of our powerful campaign message: Building the Ghana we want together. This message is not just a slogan but a call to action that echoes our party’s motto. It underscores the crucial role of unity in propelling our country forward, the necessity of stability in our political and economic landscape, and our unwavering commitment to development for all our citizens.

“Our supporters are the backbone of the NDC, and I want to assure you that we remain steadfast in our commitment to these principles. Together, we will build a Ghana that is united in purpose, stable in governance, and developed in opportunity for all. Your unwavering support fuels our determination to work tirelessly towards these goals and create a brighter future for every Ghanaian.”

BoG acknowledges receipt of Ayariga’s petition on 2023 losses, others

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has responded to the demands made by the Bawku Central Member of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, regarding information on losses recorded in the 2023 financial statement and the escalating costs associated with its head office, as per section 18 of the Right to Information Act 2019 (Act 989).

“The Bank acknowledges your receipt of your letter dated June 3, and notes the content thereof.”

“We write to inform you that your request is receiving attention,” the BoG letter said.

The Bank of Ghana reported a loss of GH₵10.5 billion for the financial year ending in 2023, primarily attributed to a substantial increase in total interest expenses on open market operations, which rose by GH₵6.7 billion during the review period.

In August of the preceding year, the Bank of Ghana also defended its new $250 million headquarters.

In a statement released on Monday, June 3, Mr Ayariga stated, “I write on the instructions of the Minority Leader of Parliament to request for the following information: Detailed particulars of the status of the write-offs made in respect of government’s indebtedness to BoG.”

“Reasons for the combined losses of approximately GH70 billion as stated in the BoG’s financial statements for 2022 and 2023. The status of the further expenses on the infamous head office building, which costs keep escalating.”

He further asked for “Reasons for recording a policy rate of 30% in 2023 as this is the highest record of policy rate in the last 20 years. Reasons for the total currency issuance expense of GH688.87 million as stated in BoG’s financial statement and annual report for 2023.”

Pay us more, 10% on monies from stool lands not enough – Ashanti Regional Chiefs to gov’t

The Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs has issued a compelling appeal to the government to reconsider the current revenue distribution from stool lands.

Traditional leaders argue that the current allocation of 10 percent to traditional authorities is insufficient and fails to reflect the significant role they play in land stewardship.

During a meeting with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, the Chiefs expressed their dissatisfaction with the consistent stance of successive governments on this matter.

They emphasized that despite numerous appeals, there has been no positive adjustment to the revenue share.

Adansimanhene Opegya Kotwere Bonsrah Afiyie II and Mamponghene Dasebre Osei Bonsu II highlighted the issue, specifically drawing Dr. Bawumia’s attention for immediate action.

They emphasized the urgency of the matter and urged the government to engage in constructive dialogue with traditional authorities to find a mutually beneficial resolution.

Jordan Ayew’s stunning hat-trick led Ghana to a thrilling 4-3 win over the Central African Republic on Matchday 4, propelling the Black Stars to the top of Group I with 9 points and solidifying their position as a strong contender in the qualifiers.

After the game, Ghanaian fans erupted in chants of “USA,” reflecting the excitement for the upcoming tournament.

With FIFA announcing that the 2026 World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, there is a buzz among Ghanaians about the possibility of traveling to the US to support the national team.

Many are gearing up to visit the US embassy to secure visas, eager to cheer for Ghana if they play in the United States.

Ayew’s heroics propelled the Black Stars to the top of Group I with 9 points, establishing them as a formidable team in the qualifiers.

The game started with Ayew converting a penalty in the 6th minute, setting the stage for an intense encounter. However, Louis Mafouta’s two goals in the 11th and 41st minutes put Ghana behind 2-1 at halftime.

  • Mop-up voter registration exercise must be extended to remote areas – Mahama tells EC

Mop-up voter registration exercise must be extended to remote areas – Mahama tells EC

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to expand the upcoming mop-up voter registration exercise beyond district offices to include remote areas that are difficult to access.

The EC’s mop-up exercise is scheduled to take place from August 1-3, 2024.

Mahama argues that extending the registration sites will allow eligible Ghanaians who have recently turned 18 or older to register during the mop-up exercise, thereby preventing voter suppression.

He made these comments during an interaction with Ghanaians known as ‘Mahama Conversations’ on Sunday, June 9, 2024.

“If this young lady or gentleman manages to secure two guarantors, pays for the transportation of the guarantors to accompany them to a registration centre and due to network failure and postponements, this young person is unable to register via the guarantor system, what is the likelihood that he or she can return another day to register with two guarantors?

“That leads to voter suppression. I will continue to urge the EC to prevent voter suppression by extending the mop-up exercise beyond its district offices to include all hard-to-reach areas.

“This will enable Ghanaians who have turned 18 or more to register from the 1st to the 3rd of August,” he said.

He reassured his supporters that any challenges with voting would not hinder his ultimate victory in the elections, emphasizing that his win would be a triumph for all Ghanaians.

“However, let me assure you that no matter the challenges or artificial mountains and obstacles they erect in your paths to prevent you from exercising your franchise, my victory in the polls shall be your victory. It shall be a victory for all the suffering Ghanaians,” he stated.

This is because its features are compliant with ICAO standards.

Also, the Ghana Card has the features of an e-passport and can be used for travels where immigration stamps are not required.

You must not be allowed to hold public office – UG Lecturer slams NPP PC for instigating attacks on soldiers

Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has stated that any politician who supports illegal mining, given its devastating impact on the country’s natural resources, should be condemned.

His remarks come in response to the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate for Amenfi East, Ernest Frimpong, who urged illegal miners to confront soldiers attempting to stop their activities.

In a widely circulated video, Mr Frimpong is seen advising a group of alleged illegal miners to resist military officers patrolling the area and trying to evict them, emphasizing that no military personnel had been authorized to manage the sites and encouraging miners to defend themselves if necessary.

Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, who also heads the region’s Security Council, was also present at the forum.

Discussing the issue on the JoyNews AM Show, Dr. Asah-Asante emphasized that such individuals should not be permitted to hold public office.

“Look at the effect of galamsey on the production of food, on the production of cocoa and then on health. Look at the consequences that we have from these illegal activities and what even the country has not turned its attention to; the issue with our neighbors.

“How we pollute their water bodies and sooner than later they are going to take us on. Look at the kidney problems that we have, which a lot have been attributed to the fact that we have poisonous substances in our waterbodies.

“So for somebody who is holding a political office to urge people along this negative path, I believe it is a wrong move. These type of people should not be encouraged to hold public office because all they want is to have political power and it doesn’t matter how society survives or not”.

He also urged security agencies to detain the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for questioning to deter others from inciting the public against police and military personnel while they perform their duties.

“If that is what the man is saying, then I think the security people must talk to him’, he stressed.

Mr. Ernest Frimpong has clarified suggestions that he encouraged illegal miners to persist in their activities and defend themselves against military personnel in the area.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News on Sunday, June 9, Mr. Frimpong confirmed that he was the person in the video but denied interacting with illegal miners, explaining that he was addressing miners in the community.

“I am saying that if the people in uniform can go to the length of engaging civilians in a business to torment miners who are legally working, then, they should be exposed because once you do that, you are deviating from what you are supposed to do,” he said.

He also alleged that legal miners are attacked, extorted, and have their equipment destroyed by individuals linked to the NDC who have connections in the security service. He stated that this is done to create dissatisfaction with the government, which is why he gave the advice.

Mussa Dankwah will definitely lie about NDC MPs thrashing his anemic electoral survey – Anyidoho

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, who earlier stated that Mussa Dankwah, the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, was once expelled from a meeting of NDC MPs in the Volta Region for disseminating inaccurate election surveys, has reiterated his stance.

Anyidoho remarked that Mr. Dankwah does not belong to the group of individuals who should influence Mahama regarding election results, although the current situation suggests otherwise.

Mr. Anyidoho recounted an incident where NDC MPs removed Mr. Dankwah from a meeting in the Volta Region due to a false survey.

“About 3 months ago NDC MPs attended a retreat in Ho. Mussa Dankwah was invited. We are hearing rumours that you are roaming with a certain survey. Can you show it to us? The long and short of it is that, when he was done, the MPs told him that, “Masa, we are the ones on the grounds. You are telling us that we will win 180 and more seats in parliament. When did you wakeup from sleep, that you say NDC will win 185 seats in parliament in this election?” That’s how we even heard that Musa Danquah was sacked from the meeting at Volta Serene Hotel”, Mr Anyidoho said.

In a recent development, Mr Dankwah dismissed these claims. He noted that despite being present at an NDC meeting, his survey on elections was not rubbished as being suggested.

Mr Anyidoho insists the Global InfoAnalytics director cannot be trusted on what should be expected at the end of an election.

It is unlawful to encourage Ghanaians to attack soldiers – GAF condemns NPP PC

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a stern warning to the public in response to the spread of viral videos on social media that promote attacks on soldiers and other security personnel.

This warning follows a directive from Ernest Frimpong, the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate for Amenfi East, who urged illegal miners to confront soldiers attempting to stop their mining activities in the area.

In a viral video, Frimpong is seen addressing a group, presumably illegal miners, encouraging them to resist military officers who are patrolling the area and trying to evict them.

He stated that no military personnel had been authorized to manage the mining sites at this time and urged miners to defend themselves if necessary.

Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, who also heads the region’s Security Council, was also present at the forum.

In response, GAF highlighted that such actions are illegal and pose a significant threat to national security and stability.

GAF warned that the repercussions of such confrontations could be severe, stressing the importance of avoiding such incidents.

They reiterated that assaulting or attacking soldiers is a serious crime punishable by law and urged all citizens to respect, cooperate with, and support the Armed Forces.

The statement called for public cooperation to avoid engaging in or promoting violence against soldiers.

The Ghana Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment to professionalism, integrity, and service to the nation. They emphasized their cooperation with other security agencies to safeguard Ghana’s interests while respecting citizens’ rights and dignity.

GAF encouraged the public to voice their concerns or grievances through the Department of Public Relations, maintaining an open-door policy for addressing issues constructively.

This information was provided by Alex Tetteh, a prominent figure in Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign and the convener for Citizen Eye, Ghana.

“Kennedy Agyapong is in the United States of America currently. He will be back soon and he will join the campaign to get Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to become President. He said after the primaries that he will join the campaign and that is what he will do,” he said.

“We even counselled him to go Independent but he saw what we said as not making sense. Kennedy is an institution and so he decided to stay with the party unlike Alan Kyerematen who decided to leave when he lost.”

Speaking on Accra-based Okay FM, Alex Tetteh took the opportunity to apologize to anyone who may have been offended during the primaries, urging everyone to unite and support Bawumia in his bid to win the election.

  • SML paid some journalists to do PR for them – Bridget Otoo reveals

SML paid some journalists to do PR for them – Bridget Otoo reveals

Media personality Bridget Otoo has accused the management of Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) of paying money to some journalists to do damage control on its reputation over the KPMG report on its deal with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

In an interview on The KSM show, Bridget Otoo noted that journalists who are paid meagre salaries and are in need of money were bought by SML to write positive stories about the company at a time when its ineffectiveness was brought to light.

“It is there, people are chasing soli before your story can go on air. In 2024, if you pay a journalist GHC3,000, you haven’t committed any crime. Everything we talk about in this country has to do with money. This SML scandal we are talking about, the company has been paid GHC1.4 billion for literally doing no work. So if a journalist takes that small money, which they did, at the point they paid journalists to do PR for them. So everybody wrote a story about SML and what they do,” she said.

President Akufo-Addo released the KPMG audit report on the contentious contract between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) on Wednesday, May 22.

This followed weeks of pressure from Ghanaians, including civil society organizations, demanding transparency regarding the numerous infractions in the contract.

The audit findings revealed that SML owes the GRA GH¢31.88 million in unpaid taxes for eight months of service provision. This debt includes accrued interest, estimated at GH¢18.50 million as of January 31, 2024. It was also discovered that all these contracts lacked approval from both the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) and Parliament.

Furthermore, the report disclosed that the GRA had six service contracts with SML, contradicting the presidency’s initial claim of only three contracts. This discrepancy sharply contrasts with information previously stated in a press release by the Communications Director of the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, on April 24.

These revelations have sparked significant public outrage, with many Ghanaians calling for the immediate cancellation of the deal and the prosecution of those responsible

Nyantakyi’s plan to see Anas’ face hits a snug over court appeal in corruption trial

Former president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, faces a prolonged wait for the outcome of an appeal lodged by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Anas is contesting a High Court ruling that requires him to reveal his identity during his testimony in the ongoing corruption trial.

Mr Nyantakyi stands accused of fraud, corruption, and conspiracy to commit fraud following his involvement in the #Number12 exposé orchestrated by Anas. This investigation led to Nyantakyi’s removal from office and has been a significant point of contention.

In May 2023, the Accra High Court ruled in Nyantakyi’s favor, ordering Anas to unmask himself and be identified in chambers by Nyantakyi. Anas subsequently appealed this decision, which has caused delays in the trial proceedings due to a “system challenge” at the court registry that prevented the necessary documents from reaching the Court of Appeal.

During the court session on Monday, June 10, Nyantakyi’s lawyer, Baffour Gyau Bonsu Ashia, reiterated a previous request for his client’s discharge. However, Justice Marie-Louise Simmons denied this request, emphasizing the need to await the appeal’s outcome to determine the case’s trajectory.

Justice Simmons further noted that the court registry had resolved the earlier issues and had compiled the required documents, which would soon be forwarded to the Appeals Court.

Previously, the court had warned that it would discharge the accused and dismiss the case if the first witness did not appear by April 30, 2024.

Nyantakyi is on trial alongside the former Northern Regional GFA head, Abdulai Alhassan, who was absent from the court proceedings on June 10. The case is scheduled to be called again at the High Court on July 10 at 9 am.

Martinson Ampadu, who emerged victorious nearly a year ago, claims he has not received the promised $1,000 grand prize, despite paying GHS1,000 for his registration.

In a video gone viral, Ampadu called on the organiser to refund to him the amount of GHC1,000 he paid as registration fees.

His victory at the Africa Muscle Super Show, held in September 2023 in Accra, saw him crowned the overall winner after competing against top bodybuilders from Nigeria, Togo, Cameroon, and other African countries.

Ampadu clinched first place in the men’s physique category and then went on to win the ultimate prize of the event, securing his title as the overall champion.

Following his victory, Ampadu expressed his excitement and satisfaction, noting the tough competition he faced. However, his joy has been overshadowed by the disappointment of not receiving his rightful prize from the event organized by WABBA Ghana.

“The competition was not easy, but I came here with one purpose, and that was to win. So, I am glad I did so, and I am grateful to all my fans who offered me moral and financial support to be here.

A box of tomatoes in Tamale costs GHC1,500 to GHC1,700 – NPP activist tells critics

A pro-activist of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) by X username, @Gen_Buhari_, has clapped back at critics of government over the exorbitant price of tomatoes in some parts of the country.

The cost of foodstuffs has risen sharply, shocking many Ghanaians. Numerous individuals have turned to social media to voice their worries about the high cost of living, particularly as items like tomatoes, onions, and peppers are being sold at exorbitant prices.

A female trader in Ghana has expressed concern over the escalating prices of tomatoes.

In an interview, she mentioned that a bag of tomatoes now costs GHC8,000, while a basket is sold at GHC1,500.

Currently, a bucket is priced at GH200. Due to the high cost, she stated that a single tomato is now sold for GHC5, meaning that with GHC20, one can purchase four tomatoes.

But according to @Gen_Buhari_, the price of tomatoes in the Northern region come at an affordable rate, indicating that some parts of the country are not experiencing hiked prices as reported.

“Box “adaka” of tomatoes in Tamale, cost between GHc1,500 to GHc1,700. It is nowhere close to GHc6,000 to GhC7,000 quoted earlier. NOTE: It is around 900 to 1,000 Cedis in Akumadan, Offinso North,” he wrote.

He advised that “You can choose to stay in Accra and buy food stuff at higher prices” and cautioned that “don’t conclude it’s like that nationwide.”

His advice has not been received well by Ghanaians who believe pragmatic measures must be taken to ensure consumers must be protected from greedy businessmen and women.

“So we should relocate to Tamale right?” a user asked. Another wrote, “Bring it to Accra add fuel charges loading boys sometimes if you don’t think deep u won’t get this things right.”

Businessman John Dumelo has attributed the high prices of tomatoes, onions, and peppers to insufficient production during the dry season.

Businessman John Dumelo has attributed the high prices of tomatoes, onions, and peppers to insufficient production during the dry season.

CSAG avails itself to address dismissal of galamsey cases involving Chinese nationals

The Chinese Speakers Association of Ghana has responded to a recent news report highlighting the lack of interpreters needed to prosecute Chinese nationals involved in illegal mining activities.

In a detailed statement, the Association refuted these claims and expressed their readiness to provide interpreting services at a reasonable rate.

They are urging the government to engage with them to address this pressing issue.

This comes after Deputy Greater Accra Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, George Agbenowoshi, revealed a concerning issue regarding the prosecution of Chinese nationals involved in illegal mining activities, known as galamsey.

According to Mr Agbenowoshi, Chinese illegal miners arrested are often released by courts due to a lack of interpreters.

Speaking at a mini ceremony organized by Parliament for the 2024 Green Ghana Day, Mr Agbenowoshi explained that the language barrier causes cases to drag on in court, ultimately resulting in dismissal.

The comment made by the Commission has not been welcomed by members of the general public who believe Ghana has Chinese interpreters. They cited tertiary institutions such as the University of Ghana where Chinese is being taught as a course.

According to Ghanaian users on social media, Chinese tutors could be used by the court as interpreters to ensure delivery of justice is not marred.

As of May 2023, Attorney General Godfred Dame said the office of the Attorney-General and Department of Justice was conducting criminal prosecutions against 727 persons who engaged in illegal mining activities across the country.

Meanwhile, the Forestry Commission in the Greater Accra Region has identified the lack of logistical support, including vehicles and motorbikes, at its district offices as a major obstacle to combating illegal mining and other degrading activities.

Richest man in Ghana has 99 siblings, 13 step-mothers – Report

Ghana’s wealthiest individual in 2023, Nick Kofi Adjei Danso Abbeam, hails from a nuclear family with 100 children.

Nick Abbeam, the CEO of the Nick Group of Companies, oversees a diverse business empire that includes Ghana Link, the Royal Nick Hotels chain, the Royal Light chain, Nick TC Scan (Ghana and Sierra Leone), Alic Inspection Company, Export Gold Ethanol Inspection Company, Global Export Company of Guinea Bissau, Misyl Energy BDC, Nick Petroleum, and several other ventures.

In a revealing 2023 interview with Kofi TV, Nick Abbeam disclosed that his father had 14 wives and fathered 100 children.

“My father had many wives; my mother was the last one, the 14th. He was the chief of Bredi… He had 100 children. I am the third child of my mother,” Nick Abbeam shared, highlighting his mother, Abena Achiaa, who was the youngest wife of his father.

Nick Abbeam’s journey to success began when he moved to Spain, where he expanded his business acumen.

After over a decade in Spain, he returned to Ghana to establish his various enterprises, including Nick and Slogan, a pioneering company in importing Ford tires, kitchen cabinets, and building materials into Ghana.

“I was seventeen when my uncle took me to Spain. I worked there before bringing some of my business ventures to Ghana. One of my first companies was Nick and Slogan on Spintex Road. Slogan was a white man; I was the Nick. We started importing Ford tires, kitchen cabinets, and more to Ghana,” he recounted.

These initial ventures laid the foundation for numerous other businesses in Ghana and beyond.

“In 2000, I decided to come back home after my success in Spain… I began with Nick Hotel, then expanded to Nick and Slogan, and further into other businesses in Ghana and across Africa. After Nick and Slogan, I founded Ghana Link. This led to Nick Scan, then Misyl (Energy BDC), which gave rise to Nick Petroleum, and with God’s blessing, many more businesses,” he elaborated.

Illegal miners butcher military officer at Wassa Akyempim

A group of illegal miners at a galamsey site at Wassa Akyempim in the Western Region have left a military officer battling for his life after attacking him with a cutlass.

Sources say the military officer and three other colleagues visited the mining site and were chased out by the miners to a fuel station, where one of the officers was assaulted.

The officers who accompanied the victim are said to have bolted upon seeing the group of armed miners.

Reports from Angel News indicate that the victim was struck on the head with a machete several times despite the intervention of some residents.

It is unknown what may have caused the miners said to be involved in illegal activities to launch an attack on a security personnel.

Residents who engaged Angel News in anonymity revealed that the military officers regularly visit the various mining sites in Wassa East district but could not tell exactly why.

Meanwhile, the assaulted military officer has been admitted to the Wassa Ateiku Health Center after the timely intervention of the Assembly man for Wassa Akyempim electoral area, Joseph Akomiah and his Unit Community Chairman, Agogo.

Also, a report has launched with the Wassa East District Police Command, which has since launched investigations into the matter.

I called the Police emergency line but it didn’t go through – Amissah Arthur’s wife recounts robbery attack

Former Second Lady Matilda Amissah-Arthur has provided a detailed account of the terrifying robbery and the challenging events she had to endure on December 5, 2023.

Speaking in a video testimony at the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International, she noted that after being beaten to a pulp by a robber who was bent on killing her, she somehow managed to save her life and decided to check up on those living with her.

She then heard gunshots and had no idea of the whereabouts of the robber who nearly choked her to death. Mrs Amissah-Arthur noted that her first attempt to reach the Police was unsuccessful.

“I crawled, took my phone and called the police emergency number and there was no reply,” she said.

However, moments later she was able to reach the Tesano Police after reaching her doctor who ordered that she be taken to a health facility after those close to her realised her face and throat got swollen.

“He was wailing. Apparently, my face was one big mess. So he is seeing my face and screaming,” she said.

According to the widow, her doctor decides to call a few scan health facilities before they set off. She revealed that none of the health facilities that were contacted were ready to attend to her since their opening time was 8 a.m., despite it being about 4 a.m.

“So he calls a few hospitals and the response is ‘well, we won’t open the scan’s place until 8 a.m.. And this was around 4 a.m. So he says there is somebody who is dying. They said we work at 8 a.m.,” she said.

Fortunately, her doctor managed to secure a private health institution, and upon arrival, everyone kept staring at her due to how her face was disfigured.

The encounter between Matilda Amissah-Arthur and the robber

She explained how she complied with the intruder’s demands, yet still faced brutal violence.

Mrs. Amissah-Arthur revealed that the incident occurred while she was holding money intended for renovations at her mother’s house. “We were renovating our mother’s house so my siblings brought money, and the money was with me,” she recounted.

When the intruder demanded money, she quickly handed over $2,200 and 50 euros. “Quickly, I took the $2,200 dollars and gave him, and I had 50 euros of my own and I gave him,” she said. She also gave him all the cedis in her purse.

However, the robber was not satisfied with the amount. “Then he counted the money and said, ‘This small money.’”

“He got angry. He turned my room upside down, and of course, he didn’t find money or any jewelry. And then he said, ‘You wasted my time, so I will kill you. But I have to call my boss.’ By this time, he had dragged me from the bed and was hitting my head on the ground,” she continued.

In a chilling twist, the attacker spoke on the phone and received instructions to kill her.

“He spoke on the phone for a couple of minutes and said, ‘My boss says I should shoot you, but I won’t shoot you. I will strangle you so that you’ll die a slow death and next time you come, you’ll have money.’ So, he started strangling me.”

Amidst the ordeal, Mrs. Amissah-Arthur asked for water. In a bizarre act, the attacker fetched water from her fridge and allowed her to drink before resuming his attack.

“I got thirsty at some point, and I said, ‘I am thirsty.’ He stopped strangling me, went to my fridge for water, opened it, and put it in my mouth. Just when I started drinking, he snapped it, closed it, and continued strangling me.”

  • Mahama promises 20% salary increment for teachers who accept postings to rural schools

Mahama promises 20% salary increment for teachers who accept postings to rural schools

Former President John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to offer a 20% salary incentive to teachers who agree to serve in rural schools.

This promise comes amid concerns raised by the education think tank, Africa Education Watch, about the inadequate and unfair distribution of trained teachers across the country.

The Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, emphasized that while Ghana requires more teachers, the perception of a shortage is misleading.

Asare explained that the real issue lies in the over-concentration of teachers in urban areas, which negatively impacts rural education. He pointed out that thousands of public primary school classrooms in rural Ghana lack teachers, leading to an average of 30 student dropouts daily.

For instance, the Adentan municipality has 18 public primary schools with 140 classrooms, needing at least 158 teachers to function properly.

However, it has a surplus of 205 teachers, with 363 currently employed. Similarly, Kumasi Metro, which has 98 public primary schools with 820 classrooms, requires 918 teachers but has a surplus of 290, with 1,208 teachers currently employed.

The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, attributed part of the responsibility for the shortage of teachers in rural areas to members of various teachers’ associations. He noted that many trained teachers either refuse postings to rural areas or seek transfers away from these locations after a few years.

Mahama’s proposed 20% salary incentive aims to address this distribution problem by encouraging more teachers to take up positions in rural schools, thereby improving the quality of education for students in these areas.

Hawa Koomson walked away free but you detained a woman whose name you misspelt – Mahama slams Police

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has condemned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for what he characterized as acts of inequality and selective justice.

He pointed out the incident involving the current Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson, who discharged a firearm at a voter registration center without facing any consequences, while Naa Koryoo was detained for legally possessing a firearm.

He accused the police of politically motivated and unfair selective enforcement of their discretionary arrest powers.

“The inequality and selective justice of this government are gullying, otherwise, how could Hawa Koomson, who fired a weapon at a registration centre and boasted about it, walk away free and a parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East is detained partly because the very police that issued her with a firearm’s license misspelt her name?” the former president said in a live broadcast on Sunday, June 9.

Despite these intimidation tactics, Mr. Mahama expressed confidence in Madam Okunor’s victory in the parliamentary race.

He claimed that the police have effectively secured the Awutu Senya East parliamentary seat for the party’s candidate, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, by arresting and detaining her in a bid to intimidate her.

“If the government was seeking to break the spirit of Naa Koryoo with that politically organised arrest, they have rather handed over the Awutu Senya East parliamentary seat to the young woman, who by all standards towers over and above the incumbent,” he said.

We want a good stadium to play better football – Partey to Bawumia

The senior national team, Black Stars, has called on the government to construct a stadium that will stand the test of time.

Captain of the Black Stars, Thomas Partey, during a visit by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, said that without a good stadium, the national team is not able to play better football that would satisfy the desire of football fanatics.

“I have one request from all the players, asking for a good stadium because we want to play better football,” Captain Thomas Partey said.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia paid a visit to the Ghanaian national football team, the Black Stars, to convey his best wishes for their upcoming World Cup qualifier against the Central African Republic (CAR).

The Black Stars, under the guidance of head coach Otto Addo, are preparing for a challenging encounter against CAR in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The match is scheduled to take place at the Baba Yara Stadium on Monday, with kickoff set for 19:00 GMT.

Coach Otto Addo has emphasized the importance of the upcoming game, especially after their impressive come-from-behind victory against Mali in Bamako during the third round of matches.

Despite this recent success, Addo acknowledges the tough challenge that CAR poses and is preparing his team accordingly.

“It’s going to be very difficult. For everyone who thinks we can just play them, I don’t think it will happen,” said the former Borussia Dortmund coach.

Galamsey cases are thrown out over difficulty in finding Chinese interpreters – Forestry Commission

Deputy Greater Accra Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, George Agbenowoshi, has highlighted a concerning issue regarding the prosecution of Chinese nationals involved in illegal mining activities, known as galamsey.

According to Mr Agbenowoshi, these individuals are frequently arrested but often released by the courts due to a lack of interpreters, leading to cases being dismissed.

He emphasized that the language barrier causes cases to drag on in court, ultimately resulting in dismissal.

Speaking at a mini ceremony organized by Parliament for the 2024 Green Ghana Day, Agbenowoshi also expressed concerns about the challenges faced by district Forestry offices nationwide. He specifically mentioned the untimely release of funds and the legal hurdles encountered in prosecuting Chinese nationals involved in illegal mining activities.

“We have the challenge of timely release of funds for forestry-related activities including plantation activities in our sector and issues sent to court have been there for years without redress. Issues of mining activities involving Chinese that take an interpreter to translate are often thrown out of court as a result of the lack of an interpreter.”

The report by the Commission has not been welcomed by members of the general public who believe Ghana has Chinese interpreters. They cited tertiary institutions such as the University of Ghana where Chinese is being taught as a course.

In May 2023, Attorney General Godfred Dame said the office of the Attorney-General and Department of Justice was currently conducting criminal prosecutions against 727 persons who engaged in illegal mining activities across the country.

The minister enumerated other challenges impeding speedy prosecution of alleged illegal miners as lack of interpreters in cases involving foreign nationals and unwillingness of witnesses to give testimonies in courts for fear of being threatened by accused who lived in the same community as them.

In the case of a Ghanaian, it is now a term of a minimum of 15 years imprisonment and maximum of 25 years, together with a fine of minimum of 10,000 penalty units and not more than 15,000 penalty units.

In the case of a non-Ghanaian, Act 995 enhanced the punishment for the same offences to a term of a minimum of 20 years imprisonment and maximum of twenty-five years, together with a fine of a minimum one hundred thousand penalty units and not more than three hundred and fifty thousand penalty units.

The new punishment regime is in contrast to the situation under Act 703 passed in 2006, which prescribed a penalty of a minimum of 3,000 thousand penalty units or imprisonment of not more than five years for the offence of trading in minerals and mining without a licence.

NIA staff lay down their working tools over poor condition of service

Starting today, Monday, June 10, 2024, the Divisional Executive Council of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) within the National Identification Authority (NIA) is set to commence an indefinite strike.

This decision comes after a council meeting held on May 23, where members unanimously agreed to proceed with the strike action.

Originally scheduled to begin on March 24, the strike was postponed due to the intervention of the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations.

In a statement dated June 9, the union said, “the condition for the deferment of the strike action was that the government, represented by the FWSC, and the management of NIA facilitate the negotiation and implementation of better conditions of service for staff of the NIA among others. However, the government has not shown good faith in the negotiation process.”

The statement, signed by its Council Secretary, Kwabena Adu Kyeremeh and Council Chairman, Francis Bangfudeme Nyuzaghi, further noted that, “the Divisional Executive Council has therefore resolved to declare this indefinite strike in response to the heightened agitation of our members on the need to embark on an industrial action to drum home our poor and demeaning conditions of service”.

The PSWU has announced the indefinite suspension of all services provided by its members at NIA District offices, Regional offices, Headquarters, and premium centers, effective Monday, June 10, 2024, until further notice, in line with its decision.

Gomoa Okyereko Chief Priestess offers libeation to Ayensu River god after recent flood

The chief priestess of Gomoa Okyereko has offered libation, pleading with the river god Ayensu to keep calm following the recent overflow that caused floods in the area.

The diversion of the Ayensu River by a contractor working on the Kasoa-Cape Coast Highway led to significant destruction, with three buildings collapsing and over 150 houses and farmlands submerged.

The problem began on Wednesday, June 5, when the river’s diversion affected a bridge spanning the Ayensu River. Originating from the Eastern Region, the river flows across the Accra-Cape Coast Highway at Gomoa Okyereko in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region and eventually into the sea.

The diversion caused the main Accra-Cape Coast Highway to cave in, stranding commuters on Thursday morning, June 6.

Robert Hackman, the Gomoa East District Director for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NaDMO), described the destruction’s extent to Citi News’ Calvis Tetteh and urged motorists to use alternative routes until the road is restored.

Recognizing their significance, the government is set to launch the SME Opportunities and Growth Fund in July. This initiative aims to assist SMEs in gaining a stronger foothold and to transition select SMEs into larger enterprises, thereby spurring economic growth and job creation.

He also stressed the need for more documentation of entrepreneurial journeys to serve as a guide for future generations.

  • Scrap ‘corrupt’ PFJ policy, invest heavily in irrigation – Dumelo advises Agric Ministry

Scrap ‘corrupt’ PFJ policy, invest heavily in irrigation – Dumelo advises Agric Ministry

John Dumelo, a prominent politician and farmer, has offered recommendations to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture on enhancing the agricultural sector’s growth.

In a recent post on social media platform X, Dumelo proposed two key suggestions aimed at fostering consistent progress in agriculture.

Dumelo’s first recommendation is to abolish the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) policy, which he views as a channel for corruption and underperformance. Instead, he advocates for redirecting resources towards investing heavily in irrigation infrastructure for dry season farming.

Dumelo highlights the current scarcity and high prices of crops like pepper, tomatoes, and onions during the dry season due to insufficient production.

He points out that neighboring countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have capitalized on this gap by investing significantly in irrigation, enabling them to produce these crops throughout the year.

According to Dumelo, the reliance on rain-fed agriculture leads to cyclical fluctuations in food prices, which could be mitigated through irrigation-based farming.

He emphasizes the need for Ghana to invest in irrigation to achieve price stability and reduce import dependency on neighboring farmers for essential food items.

In contrast, the government introduced a new set of initiatives under the Planting for Food and Jobs programme in March 2024.

This initiative includes a credit system aimed at helping beneficiary farmers expand their farms and address funding challenges.

Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, explained that the new system is designed to boost food production and reduce import reliance. He assured that efforts are underway to regulate food prices in the market.

While Dumelo’s proposal challenges the current approach, Minister Acheampong defends the PFJ programme, portraying it as a well-considered strategy to improve farmers’ livelihoods and increase food production.

I will exempt artisanal fishers from the closed-season policy – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to revive and enhance the fishing sector in Ghana to its former strength.

He made this commitment during a meeting with the fishing community in Tema on Saturday, June 8, 2024.

Mr. Mahama assured the fishing community that if elected, the next NDC government would reinstate the nonpartisan Landing Beach Committee.

This move would ensure a fair distribution of premix fuel and outboard motors to all registered association members without any political bias. He stressed the need to keep politics out of the fishing sector, promising equitable treatment for all members.

Additionally, Mr. Mahama promised to reintroduce the subsidised premix and outboard motor policy that had provided relief to fishers during his previous administration.

He also pledged that artisanal fishers would be exempt from the closed-season policy under the next NDC government.

Furthermore, the NDC leader committed to completing the National Fisheries College, initiated by the late President John Atta Mills. This would ensure that fishing industry members receive proper training, enhancing their effectiveness and efficiency.

Mr. Mahama also vowed to provide fish-finding equipment to fisherfolk, enabling them to locate fish scientifically and streamline their operations.

  • NLA, European Lottery officials collaborate on responsible gaming training

NLA, European Lottery officials collaborate on responsible gaming training

Legal Advisor to the European Lotteries (EL), Phillipe Vlaemminck, has called on governments globally to reconsider the practice of taxing lottery winnings as a method of revenue generation, arguing that it discourages participation and diminishes the appeal of the game.

Speaking during a training session organized by the National Lottery Authority in Ghana, Mr. Vlaemminck emphasized that such taxation is counterproductive.

He was accompanied by Ms. Beata Guzik, EL Public Affairs Director. The session aimed to educate management, Lotto Marketing Companies (LMCs), Private Lottery Operators (PLOs), and third-party collaborators on various aspects of lottery operations and regulations.

The training covered a wide range of topics, including the role of lotteries, responsible gaming, combating illegal lotteries, global lottery trends, the legal framework within the European Union, anti-money laundering practices, the impact of artificial intelligence and new technologies, the world lottery market, and types of multi-jurisdictional games.

Participants were trained on the necessity of enforcing responsible gaming practices, ensuring that profit motives do not overshadow the welfare of patrons. They learned the importance of educating players about the odds of winning to help them make informed decisions and avoid unrealistic expectations and gambling-related problems.

Mr. Vlaemminck highlighted that taxing lottery winnings serves as a deterrent for players and should not be used by governments as a primary means of revenue generation. Instead, he urged a focus on sustainable practices that maintain the attractiveness of the lottery.

“When people play the lottery, they want to see all their money, and so taxing their wins deters the player from participating again, which causes lottery institutions and operators who are already contributing significantly to good causes to lose revenue, and so I believe the Ghanaian government and governments in other parts of the world who practice this should completely abolish taxes on the lottery. Let’s allow the players to enjoy their wins.”

Mr. Phillipe Vlamminck also underscored the crucial role of governments in combating illegal lottery operations, emphasizing that these efforts should support and complement the initiatives of lottery institutions and operators.

Director-General Samuel Awuku stated that the training would enhance the National Lottery Authority’s (NLA) operations and educate its stakeholders, who can then disseminate this knowledge within their teams.

“This training is key for the operations of NLA in our commitment to adhere to and promote Responsible Gaming practices per the standards of the World Lottery Association. (WLA) and we want to carry our retailers and stakeholders along so we can practice ethically and create a safe lottery space for our patrons”. It is also an avenue to deepen our relationship with the WLA and EL”.

The training session follows engagements at the EL Public Order Seminar on Enforcing Gambling Regulation: Significance and Challenges, held in Brussels in February by the European Lotteries Association. At this seminar, Mr. Samuel Awuku, Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), was invited to speak on illegal gambling in Ghana.

During his presentation, Mr. Awuku outlined measures implemented by the NLA and the Gaming Commission to combat illegal lottery operations and gambling in Ghana.

He called for collaboration with the European Lotteries to tackle illegal activities and hold training sessions for the Authority and its stakeholders. Additionally, he requested Observer status with the European Lotteries to allow the NLA to participate in seminars and training programs organized by the EL to enhance the NLA’s operations.

The NLA has achieved WLA Level 2 Certification in Responsible Gaming and has applied to attain Level 3.

Participants of the EL training, who received certificates in Responsible Gaming, found the sessions enlightening and impactful. They urged the NLA to organize more training to keep them updated on best practices and improve their business operations.

The trainer, Mr. Phillipe Vlamminck, boasts over 40 years of experience in lotteries, betting, and gambling. He represents and advises several European Member States and governments worldwide, their gaming regulators, lottery associations, cooperative structures like EuroMillions, and aspects related to Euro Jackpot & Viking Lotto.

Ms. Beata Guzik, with over 20 years of experience, is involved in various business areas as a lawyer and public affairs expert, following up on EU regulatory developments and court cases.

  • Cameroon seal convincing win against Cape Verde as Onana saves penalty

Cameroon seal convincing win against Cape Verde as Onana saves penalty

Vincent Aboubakar scored twice and Andre Onana saved a last-minute penalty as Cameroon secured a convincing 4-1 victory over Cape Verde in Marc Brys’ debut match as head coach of the Indomitable Lions.

Brys’ appointment in April had sparked controversy between the Cameroonian football federation (Fecafoot) and the Ministry of Sport. However, the Belgian coach’s first foray into international management was smooth and successful.

Cape Verde, which had reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year—one round further than Cameroon—struggled in this match, particularly with defending set-pieces.

The result was sealed in Yaoundé when Onana saved Kevin Pina’s penalty in the 94th minute. The Manchester United goalkeeper then was fouled by Gilson Benchimol as he attempted to secure the loose ball.

This victory propelled Cameroon to the top of Group D in the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, tied with Libya on seven points but ahead on goal difference after three games. Africa will have nine representatives at the expanded 2026 World Cup, with each group winner securing a spot in the tournament hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Cameroon had a shaky start but took the lead in the 13th minute when an unmarked Michael Ngadeu headed in Moumi Ngamaleu’s corner. Aboubakar doubled the advantage 12 minutes later, hooking in Ngamaleu’s cross following a short corner on the right side.

Cape Verde reduced the deficit eight minutes before halftime when Jamiro Monteiro slotted Bebe’s through ball past the advancing Onana. However, Cameroon restored their two-goal cushion just before halftime. Ngamaleu, once again instrumental, was brought down by Deroy Duarte, allowing captain Aboubakar to convert the penalty with precision.

Cameroon extended their lead to 4-1 nine minutes into the second half when Nouhou Tolo outmuscled center-back Roberto Lopes to head home from another short corner.

In other qualifying action on Saturday, The Gambia registered their first Group F victory with a 5-1 thrashing of Seychelles in Morocco. Northern Irish coach Johnny McKinstry oversaw his first match in charge of the Scorpions, with the game level at halftime after Ryan Henriette equalized Mohamed Badamosi’s opener. Musa Barrow’s penalty restored the lead, and Badamosi scored again, followed by goals from Yankuba Minteh and St Johnstone forward Adama Sidibeh to secure a comfortable win for The Gambia.

The fourth round of qualifying matches is set to take place between Sunday and Tuesday.
