Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has been given a two-match touchline suspension following his red card against Chelsea on 30 March.
He will serve a one-game ban immediately, with the other match suspended until the end of the year.
Kompany was sent off for protesting against a penalty decision that led to Lorenz Assignon also being dismissed.
The Belgian later criticized the standard of refereeing in this season’s Premier League, saying it “hasn’t been good enough.”
He admitted a charge of misconduct and has been fined £10,000. Burnley, currently 19th in the Premier League, will face Brighton without Kompany on the touchline.
Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, the morning show host at Angel FM, has honored the invitation from the Nungua Traditional Council.
He was summoned to address allegations of making disparaging comments against the Gborbu Wulomo-Shitse, the Overlord of the Gadangme State, and King Odaifio Welentsi III, the Paramount Chief of the Nungua Traditional Area.
Appearing before the council on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, Afrifa-Mensah pleaded for pardon. He attributed his indiscretion to being misinformed and having little knowledge about the status of the Gborbu Wulomo at the time of his comments.
“I was against the attempt to explain because no amount of explanation will be enough to calm you down. Because as you’ve stated, my utterances were unsavoury. But I will first plead because there is a saying that it is only the foreigner that eats a blind fowl, I had no idea that when we say Gborbu-Wulomo, he is the overlord of the people. In my thoughts, he was some Kwaku Bonsam, a popular fetish priest kind of. And anyone who has followed me knows I am a human rights activist from my association with the Fix The Country demonstration. However, as a sitting chief myself, even if I have that casual relationship with my boss Kwadwo Dickson and he is later enstooled, it is no more about himself but rather the people he serves,” he addressed the council in a video.
The Ga Traditional Council had previously summoned Afrifa-Mensah to appear before them regarding his comments.
In a public statement, Afrifa-Mensah expressed remorse for his previous comments, explaining that he was unaware of Gborbu-Wulomo’s status as the head of the Gadangme tribe when he made his remarks about an alleged marriage to a 12-year-old.
“If I claim to be a fighter for human rights and one day I wake up to the news that an MC officiating a programme says even my lord, Osei Tutu (Asantehene) is marrying a 12-year-old child, I would be so angry and I would say it the way I said it. However, at the time I was speaking on the matter, my understanding of Gborbu-Wulomo was that he was someone like Kwaku Bomsam [a fetish priest] because sitting here I didn’t know the Wulomo was the head of the Gadangme tribe. I thought it was the Mantse who was the head,” Afrifa-Mensah explained.
He continued, “So my understanding of who Gborbu-Wulomo was at the time of making those pronouncements was not that he was the overlord of the Gadangme Traditional Council…. So every Gadangme who is angered has a right to be angry.”
Acknowledging his misunderstanding, Afrifa-Mensah extended his apology to the Gadangme community and Gborbu-Wulomo, emphasizing his respect for tradition and customs.

The decision on transport fares has been postponed after the Ministry of Transport allegedly failed to attend a crucial meeting with driver unions yesterday.
The absence of the ministry has heightened the frustration of drivers who were expecting an increase in fares due to rising fuel costs.
This delay prolongs the uncertainty surrounding transport fares, leaving drivers in a state of despair.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Concerned Drivers, David Agboado, reiterated their demand for a 20% fare increase in an interview with JoyNews.
“We are meeting with the ministry but it won’t change anything. We will still take the 20%,” Mr Agboado said, adding “This time around, whether the minister says anything or he plays the gimmicks that he keeps playing, the transport fare will be increased.
“The western region has started it. Parts of even Greater Accra are taking the 20%.
“So it is very welcoming news to the drivers and we have accepted it in good faith and we will take the 20%, whether GPRTU meets with the ministry, we don’t have a problem with it.”
The National Democratic Congress Parliamentary Candidate for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, has rejected the notion that his youthfulness could hinder his effectiveness as a Member of Parliament.
Despite his relatively young age, Agbana believes that his extensive political background has equipped him with the necessary skills to effectively carry out parliamentary duties.
In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Agbana expressed his disagreement with the idea that young individuals are unsuitable for parliamentary roles.
He stressed that competence in representing constituents should not be judged solely by age, but rather by one’s ability to effectively address the needs and concerns of the people.
Agbana emphasized the importance of evaluating maturity and wisdom based on experience rather than age, advocating for a more inclusive approach to political representation.
“I disagree with people who think that people like Edem Agbana and others who are in their early 30s or late 20s are too youthful to go to parliament.
“I don’t think so, I think that when you are young you are competent and you have what it takes to represent your people, the people will give you the opportunity and when they give you the opportunity you must be able to deliver.”
“I am going to parliament as a politician with a very rich experience despite being quite young,” he stated.
The OSP stated that the Secretariat is among the institutions under active investigation for corruption and related activities.
“The Office of the Special Prosecutor commenced investigations into suspected corruption and corruption-related offences at the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat circa July 2023. The investigation is active and ongoing,” the OSP said.
These comments were contained in a press statement addressing a complaint titled “Report of Suspected Corruption and Corruption-Related Offences in the award of Scholarships by the Registrar of Ghana Scholarship Secretariat– Kingsley Oppong Agyeman.”
The Scholarship Secretariat has been in the spotlight recently after a Fourth Estate investigation revealed that scholarships were sometimes awarded to individuals from financially stable backgrounds.
Among those identified were the daughters of Ghanaian lawyer and politician Freddie Blay and a former Inspector General of Police.
Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, the Registrar of the Scholarship Secretariat
This practice contradicts the Secretariat’s mandate of awarding scholarships to needy but academically gifted students. The investigation also uncovered instances where “influential” individuals were granted double scholarships.
Concerned about how much taxpayers’ monies has been spent, Deputy National Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Osman Ayariga, has called on the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to investigate Dr. Kingsley Agyemang following the recent scandal involving the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat he heads.
Presidential Candidate for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) in the 2020 general elections, Brigitte Dzogbenuku, has expressed her opposition to laws targeting individuals who practice homosexuality.
She believes that those who engage in LGBTQ practices do so despite facing hate and discrimination because they perceive love differently from others.
“So, this is not when we should be thinking about jailing them for their choices; this is when we should be thinking about how we remedy that.
“There are so many circumstances under which people become or choose to be LGBTQ, but ultimately each of them is doing it because of something they want, which will make them feel loved, have affection, or be accepted, and for some of these people, that is the only time they have felt accepted.
“So let us not jump to the symptoms of it. Let us look at the causes”, she stressed.
After nearly three years of deliberation, Parliament finally passed the highly contentious Anti-LGBTQ+ bill. The bill, introduced in the House years ago, was unanimously approved on Wednesday, February 28, following the completion of the third reading. It was then slated to be forwarded to President Akufo-Addo for his assent.
Mrs. Dzogbenuku emphasized the importance of understanding the motivations behind LGBTQ relationships. She explained that each person’s experience is unique, and there are various reasons why someone might choose to engage in LGBTQ activities.
The former presidential candidate stressed that labeling people as abnormal because they are part of the LGBTQ community is incorrect.
“You make the choice of who you want to date or marry based on different things; what you would choose is not what I would choose, and if we actually take time to understand them and see why they made this choice and address those issues informing their choices, maybe we could be a bit more compassionate and sympathetic.”
The Clerk to Parliament, Cyril Nsiah, has contacted the Executive Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante, seeking clarification on when to transmit the Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, also known as the anti-LGBTQI+ Bill.
This request follows a controversial letter from Mr. Bediatuo that advised Parliament not to transmit the Bill to President Akufo-Addo for his assent.
In his letter to Mr. Bediatuo dated Wednesday, April 10, Mr. Nsiah stated his intention to transmit the Bill in accordance with Article 106(7) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
“I am writing to acknowledge receipt of your Letter No. OPS 140/1/24/235 dated 18th March, 2024 on the above subject matter and received in my Office on 19th March, 2024.”
“I have taken note of the contents of the letter, particularly the text in the last paragraph, which states that “In the circumstances, you are kindly requested to cease and desist from transmitting the Bill to the President until matters before the Supreme Court are resolved.”
“Accordingly, I await an indication in writing from your Office on when to present the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2024 to His Excellency the President for his consideration, pursuant to article 106(7) of the Constitution, 1992.”
After the controversial letter dated March 18, 2024, in which the presidency requested parliament not to send the anti-gay bill to President Akufo-Addo for his assent due to pending applications for an order of interlocutory injunction against the bill, there was widespread condemnation of the presidency’s stance. In response, parliament suspended the vetting process for President Akufo-Addo’s newly nominated ministers.
The letter emphasized that it would be improper for Parliament to proceed with transmitting the Bill to President Akufo-Addo for any action until the legal matters before the court are resolved. It was also revealed that the Attorney-General had advised the President against taking any action regarding the Bill until the legal issues raised in the lawsuits are addressed by the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, an Accra High Court has granted an application for the abridgment of time for the hearing of the case seeking to compel President Akufo-Addo to receive the Anti-LGBTQ bill from parliament. This case, filed by NDC MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, seeks several declarations over the President’s refusal to receive the bill from Parliament.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has strongly reiterated his opposition to LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, emphasizing that the Islamic faith and other religions in the country are against such practices.
As a devout Muslim, Dr. Bawumia made it clear that he does not support or condone LGBTQ practices.
His statements come in response to calls from various quarters, particularly within certain Muslim communities, for him to clarify his position on the issue, especially as President Akufo-Addo has yet to sign a bill into law regarding this matter.
Speaking at the Kumasi Central Mosque in the Ashanti Region during the Eidul-Fitr prayers, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his firm stance against LGBTQ activities, stating that such practices would not be tolerated under his leadership.
“First of all, it is important to note that our cultural and societal norms and values as Ghanaians frown on the practice of homosexuality,” Dr. Bawumia said.
“Furthermore, as a Muslim, my view on this matter aligns with the position of my religious faith. The Holy Quran is replete with verses frowning on LGBTQ acts, including same-sex marriages. My faith is therefore very strictly against the practice of homosexuality, no “ifs” or “buts”. No shades of grey.”
“Therefore, I personally cannot support that which my religion, and indeed, all the major religions in Ghana clearly and unequivocably forbid. All the major religious traditions in Ghana (Christianity and Islam) are opposed to this practice and I stand opposed to it now and I will stand opposed to it as President, Insha Allah.”
In February of this year, Parliament passed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill. This bill seeks to impose a minimum jail term of three years and a maximum of five years on individuals who engage in and promote homosexual activities in the country.
However, the bill has not yet been signed into law by President Akufo-Addo, as it is currently facing a challenge at the Supreme Court.
The Campaign Team of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has defended the Government’s decision to distribute 3.1 million tablets to Free Senior High School (FSHS) students nationwide.
The Team stated that the tablets were essential learning materials designed to enhance teaching and learning in the SHSs, with the aim of improving students’ academic performance across the country.
It, therefore, rejected assertions that the distribution of the said tablets were “misplaced priority” and a “bribe” to lure the students into voting for the Government in the December polls.
“These tablets come in to provide textbooks, past questions, lesson videos and other educational resources to help teaching and learning and also greatly save cost for all,” Mr Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, said at a news conference, in Accra, on Tuesday.
Former President and Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, criticized the government’s ‘one student, one tablet’ initiative, labeling it as a “bribe” intended to secure the votes of students in the upcoming elections.
He questioned the government’s decision to purchase tablets when basic teaching and learning materials such as textbooks had not been provided for schools years after the curriculum was changed, describing the policy as a “misplaced priority”.
In response, Mr. Aboagye described the former President’s claims as “unfortunate” and “baffling”, questioning his morality to criticize the initiative given that he had attempted to roll out a similar project in 2016 when in power. He also pointed out that Mr. Mahama had promised in his 2020 Manifesto to distribute tablets to students.
“So, it is baffling how same former President labels distribution of tablets to free SHS beneficiaries as misplaced and a bribe for vote,” he said.
Mr. Aboagye highlighted the significant investment in the education sector since the current administration assumed office in 2017, emphasizing the priority the government has placed on education.
He mentioned that the government had systematically and deliberately worked to transform the sector at all levels. For example, at the kindergarten level, there has been heavy investment in equipping teachers with modern technologies to enhance early childhood development. Age-appropriate learning materials, play equipment, and resources for interactive and engaging learning experiences have also been provided.
Furthermore, through the GETFUND, the government is executing 1,270 infrastructural interventions with cutting-edge technology such as smart boards to widen accessibility and enhance interactive teaching and learning.
At the primary level, Mr. Aboagye noted that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration had implemented various interventions, including extensive training and capacity building for teachers, all aimed at empowering them.
“We have ensured the consistent provision of learning materials and embarked on targeted infrastructure upgrades to create conducive learning environments,” he touted.
Mr. Aboagye further explained that the implementation of the National Standardised Tests for Primary Two to Four students had improved learning outcomes. He noted that proficiency in reading among Primary Two pupils had significantly improved over the past nine years, from two per cent in 2015 to 38 per cent in 2022.
Regarding Junior High School education, Mr. Aboagye stated that the government had strengthened lower secondary education by constructing eleven model schools, each designed with modern amenities, which were currently at various stages of completion.
He also mentioned that through the Ghana National Digital Learning Project, the government was equipping students at the Junior High School level with digital skills to enable them to thrive in the global digital economy.
Mr. Aboagye further indicated that the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector had undergone comprehensive modernization and expansion. New state-of-the-art facilities were under construction, while existing ones were undergoing renovation and upgrading.
In the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, he noted that the government had completed the construction of 10 regional STEM centers to train a complete STEM pipeline from primary through Junior High School to Senior High School.
Mr. Aboagye assured that under a Bawumia-led government, the education sector would continue to witness improvement to develop human resources for development. Policies such as the Free Senior High School (FSHS) would be maintained if Dr. Bawumia was elected President in December 2024, to ensure that no one was left behind.
The World Bank‘s chief economist for the region, Andrew Dabalen, has identified deep-rooted inequalities as a significant obstacle to Africa’s economic progress.
In an interview on Citi TV’s The Point of View, he highlighted a lack of essential infrastructure and limited intra-African trade as key factors limiting growth.
Mr Dabalen noted that Africa’s growth rate in reducing poverty is only half as fast as the global average, with East Asia showing much higher rates. He attributed this disparity to what the report refers to as “structural inequalities.”
“There are many reasons why Africa’s growth is low, part of it is that we don’t have infrastructure in terms of energy, water and sanitation, and we don’t really trade a lot with each other.
“We have lots of shocks from either commodity prices, conflict or climate disasters. One of the important determinants of this low growth and this ability of low growth to convert to poverty reduction is inequality and structural inequality.
“They are inequalities because of circumstances an individual cannot control. You don’t have control over where you were born and who you were born to, your skin colour, or the fact that you are a man or a woman. These circumstances that you are born into account for almost 70% of all the differences you see between children’s access to education, health or nutrition.
“That is what we call structural, it’s not something you can change with your ability or something that the market can correct, it requires social policy action,” he told host Bernard Avle.
According to the World Bank’s Africa Pulse Report for April 2024, there are forecasts for Africa, including a projected slowdown in Ghana’s economic growth for the same year. This is despite expectations of increased economic activity.
Several African countries such as Cape Verde, Kenya, Chad, Sudan among others face water crisis due to various factors such as climate change, population growth, poor water management, and inadequate infrastructure.
Since gaining independence in 2011, South Sudan has been plagued by civil war, leading to widespread displacement, food insecurity, and humanitarian crises.
Nigeria has faced conflict, particularly in the northeast, where the Boko Haram insurgency has led to widespread displacement and humanitarian crises. Additionally, inter-communal violence and conflict in the Niger Delta region have also been significant challenges.
The British Museum (BM) and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) of the United Kingdom have returned thirty-two royal objects which were taken from the Palace in Kumasi during the Anglo-Asante Wars of the 19th century, including items from the Sargrenti War of 1874, to Ghana.
Gold and silver regalia associated with the Asante royal court will be displayed at the Palace Museum as part of a long-term loan commitment by the V&A and the British Museum. Many of these items will be seen in Ghana for the first time in 150 years.
The hundred- and fifty-year-old mostly golden royal regalia, on loan for an initial three years and renewable for another three, include fifteen pieces from the BM and seventeen from the V&A.
The return follows the final signing of official documentation in London two weeks ago by the directors of the BM and V&A, Sir Mark Jones and Dr. Tristram Hunt, and chief negotiator Mr. Ivor Agyeman-Duah, who represented and signed on behalf of the Manhyia Palace.
The return is in the context of the silver jubilee year of the Asantehene Osei Tutu II, who first opened negotiations in May 2023. It is also connected to the 150th commemoration last February and the coming centenary of the return of the Asantehene Prempeh I from exile in Seychelles.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will receive the objects and specially designed Belgian cases in Kumasi. The subsequent closure of the Manhyia Palace Museum for three weeks will be for installation works and encasing of over forty returned objects, including seven that have already been permanently given by the Fowler Museum of the University of California, Los Angeles.
These objects will collectively constitute the star objects of an international exhibition titled “Homecoming- Adversity and Commemoration,” curated by a team of British and Ghanaian curators from the BM, V&A, Foundation for Contemporary Art, Manhyia Palace, and KNUST. The exhibition is supported by partners such as British Airways, Fidelity Bank, and the Otumfuo Foundation.
The opening by the Asantehene on May 1, 2024, will be attended by directors, curators, and trustees of the BM and V&A from London, as well as journalists and photographers from major media outlets. The occasion will also see the launch of two major books: “A History of Manhyia Palace Museum- Inaugural and Other Objects” by Agyeman-Duah and “Images of Ghana- Museums, the Ownership of Cultural Property and Restitution” by Prof. Malcolm McLeod.
As Manhyia Palace engages in cultural initiatives, new paradigms on restitutions with British organizations and others continue, as seen recently in South Africa with the Gold of Africa Collection. The Asantehene will also give a major public lecture on Asante Culture and Heritage- Past and Present at the BM in London in July 2024, as part of evolving cooperation in international cultures and mutual technical and business development.
The BM and V&A have selected world-leading Anglo-Ghanaian philosopher Kwame Anthony Appiah of New York University to introduce the occasion and lecture. Appiah is also the current President of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
The Office of the National Chief Imam is advising members of the Muslim community to be cautious during the celebration of Eid ul-Fitr today.
Muslims worldwide are marking Eid ul-Fitr to conclude the month-long fasting period in Ramadan. This day, observed as a holiday for Muslims globally, is also recognized as a public holiday in Ghana.
However, the start of the holiday varies from country to country due to the traditional practice of sighting the crescent moon, which can differ from astronomical calculations and vary based on geographical location.
In an interview with Citi News, the spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheik Armiyawo Shaibu, urged members of the Islamic community to observe the day peacefully, avoiding any acts of violence.
“We don’t want to see our Muslim youth come out with violence. We don’t want them to really terrorize non-Muslim onlookers who want to see the beauty of our celebration using reckless riding of motorbikes and also riding in the booths of taxi cabs all over the place.
“They must come out clad in the best of their apparel. And then let’s also share the goodies and the best we can with even our non-Muslims. Share the greetings. I want the non-Muslim community to be part of the experience. So let’s share with them and be as disciplined as possible. Let us not use the occasion to violate the laws of our country.”
An arrest warrant has been issued for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice after he was involved in a hit-and-run crash that injured four people.
Police in Dallas, Texas, reported that two speeding cars, a Lamborghini and a Corvette, caused “a chain reaction collision” on March 30.
Rice faces eight charges, including aggravated assault and collision involving serious bodily injury.
According to external reports, the 23-year-old plans to hand himself in.
Last week, Rice, who was driving the Lamborghini, apologized for his role in the crash, stating that he took “full responsibility” and would cooperate with authorities.
Police informed the BBC that the occupants of both speeding cars fled the scene of the crash.
Theodore Knox, 21, was driving the Corvette and is also the subject of an arrest warrant on the same charges. His attorney, external sources say, stated that they have “fully cooperated with law enforcement”.
Two drivers were treated at the scene for minor injuries, while two motorists in another vehicle were taken to a local hospital.
Rice was drafted to the NFL in 2023 and played in the Chiefs’ second consecutive Super Bowl victory in February.
Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has expressed concern over the lack of progress in solving the murders of some Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
During an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express, Mr. Nketia raised alarm about the increasing trend of violence in Ghanaian politics, stating, “The country is degenerating into a situation where people can kill for power and get away with it.”
He referred to the cases of J.B. Danquah Adu, Ekow Quansah Hayford, and John Kumah, alleging that all these MPs were killed under mysterious circumstances.
“We have J.B. Danquah Adu (MP for Abuakwa North) who was stabbed to death in his bedroom. Then Ekow Quansah Hayford (MP for Mfantseman) was shot on a highway. All we heard of his matter was that his wife should take his place. And this current one, John Kumah (MP for Ejisu). After his death, we’ve had someone go on a TV station claiming that he was poisoned. This individual mentioned the name of the hotel where he ate the food and the person who served the food and bragged that he was available to testify to all the claims he was making.
“This individual is walking, nothing has happened, no hotel manager has been apprehended and NPP is approaching this as if they are just filling the vacancy and nothing else,” he said on Wednesday.
Expressing frustration over the lack of closure in these cases, Mr. Nketia criticized the authorities for failing to apprehend the perpetrators. He called for urgent action from the police and demanded transparency in the investigation process.
The NDC Chairman urged the police to address the nation and provide updates on the progress of the investigations into these deaths. He also called on the government to prioritize the safety of elected officials and ensure that such heinous crimes do not go unpunished.
“This is a critical issue, the police should be addressing the nation, as to the steps they are taking. We haven’t heard anything so far. We haven’t heard anything about how they are proceeding to find the killers of the Mfantseman MP. For J.B. Danquah Adu’s case, the state withdrew the case and there was a public outcry they claimed they were investigating the issue, at some point they said the laptop of the doctor who carried out the post-mortem had been stolen, such cock and bull stories. About three MPs have been killed and all that we hear is that their wives have been rehabilitated into parliament to replace their husbands. Is that where our democracy is moving?” he quizzed.
Whitney Adams, also known as Girl Boss, and her mother, Flavia Annang, are reported to have collaborated with scammers from Ghana to defraud elderly or older men in the U.S.
According to U.S. court documents with case number 1:22-mj-01123, Whitney, based in Accra, is known on Snapchat for her extravagant lifestyle, which includes frequent trips to Dubai for luxurious vacations at 5-star locations.
The document details fraudulent activities that allegedly occurred between July 2018 and April 2022.
“From a time unknown, but by at least July 2018, and through April 7, 2022, in the District of Arizona, and elsewhere, FLAVIA ANNANG, WHITNEY ADAMS, and their co-conspirators conducted a romance/inheritance scam,” the document said in part.
The report detailed the extent of the scams, including a victim who lost $283,000 between 2018 and 2020.
Another victim reportedly gave out approximately $5,000,000 between 2015 and 2022 under the belief that he was assisting his online lover in claiming a $10,000,000 gold inheritance.
“Victim #1, age 67, resides in Sierra Vista, Arizona and fell victim to an inheritance scam in which he believed he was sending money for fees to release an inheritance belonging to his online girlfriend. Bank records show that between July 2018 and June 2020, Victim #1 sent more than $283,000 to various individuals via wire transfers and other means in an unsuccessful effort to claim the inheritance. Victim #1 sent some of his money to Gulit Bonx Enterprise, Inc., in Massachusetts. Examination of Guilt’s bank records showed that Victim #2 also sent money to Gulit”.
The FBI document detailed how the gang operated, using fake romance to deceive their victims.
“Unknown co-conspirators created phony online dating profiles and personas to engage in online chats, text messaging, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls, and otherwise with unwitting Victims located in the United States in efforts to convince those Victims they were involved in an online romantic relationship with a real person.
“These unwitting Victims were usually elderly or older men. ANNANG’s and ADAMS’ co-conspirators then convinced the Victims to send money to, or on behalf of, those fake romantic partners to collect a fake inheritance that was supposedly due to the romantic partner.
“The Victims believed the money was to pay attorney’s fees, customs duties, government fees, taxes, or other expenses related to “releasing” the inheritance and were often told that they would share in the ultimate inheritance or that the receipt of the “inheritance” proceeds would allow the fake romantic partner to join the Victim in the United States.
“The co-conspirators provided the Victims with addresses to mail checks to and bank accounts to wire money or deposit checks to, which were controlled by ANNANG, ADAMS, or other co-conspirators. ANNANG, ADAMS, and the co-conspirators then fraudulently transferred and/or kept the Victims’ money and no “inheritance” proceeds were ever remitted in exchange,” it said.
Further details from the document revealed that Flavia Annang, Whitney’s mother, is based in the U.S. Following their arrest, both individuals have been detained while a Maryland court processes their case.
Additional information from pulse.com.gh showed that “throughout the conspiracy, ANNANG and ADAMS were located in Maryland and traveled to Ghana on occasion. On July 21, 2020, ANNANG was recorded as the Registered Agent for Flavy Merchandising LLC with the Maryland Department of State Business Registration (MDSBR).
“On January 11, 2021, ADAMS was recorded as the Registered Agent for McWells Auto Logistics, LLC with the MDSBR. Both ANNANG and ADAMS opened and managed several domestic bank accounts in order to receive and negotiate funds sent by Victims of these fraudulent romance schemes.
“When ANNANG and ADAMS received Victim funds, they would use their various bank accounts to accept bank wire or bank deposits, or deposit checks received via the mail, and then disperse the funds to other accounts or to locations outside of the United States, all at least in part to conceal the nature, source, and control of those assets,” it added.
The first legs of the Champions League quarter-finals produced thrilling results, none more so than Barcelona’s visit to Paris St-Germain, where the five-time winners staged a remarkable comeback to secure a 3-2 victory ahead of the second leg next Tuesday.
Former Leeds winger Raphinha was the standout performer in Paris, overshadowing Kylian Mbappe, who failed to make a significant impact.
Barcelona also fielded some record-breaking teenagers who displayed remarkable composure in the face of a hostile Parisian crowd when they were trailing.
Raphinha, in particular, delivered a “first-class” performance, showcasing his talent with two stunning goals. He had never scored in the Champions League before Wednesday’s match in Paris, but he made it seem effortless with the quality of his finishes.
Barcelona boss Xavi told TNT Sports: “Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski made the difference and Pedri helped us a lot. I’m very happy and very proud of the team.”
The 27-year-old was a danger throughout and had the most shots (six), shots on target (four) and touches in the opposition box (six) for Barcelona.
The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has strongly asserted that President Akufo-Addo orchestrated the lawsuit that is supposedly preventing him from assenting to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values bill recently passed by Parliament.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, April 10, the seasoned politician claimed that it was not a coincidence that the President could refer to a lawsuit that had not yet been filed as the basis for his decision not to sign the bill.
As a result, Asiedu Nketia concluded that the President was part of an alleged plan to thwart the anti-LGBTQI+ bill from becoming law.
“It is clearly an excuse and it’s a wrong excuse because he [President Akufo-Addo] was citing the court case even before anybody could file it. It tells you that he [President Akufo-Addo] orchestrated the filing.”
As at the time the President spoke, nobody had gone to court. If there’s an intention to file and the person has not filed, how do you restrain yourself over that? So, it means that you don’t want to do something but you want an excuse to cite not to do it. Because if you have heard that somebody is going to court, the person has not gone to court and yet you are injuncting yourself, then it means that you’re part of an orchestration to go to court in the first place.”
Based on this, Mr Asiedu Nketia said, “I don’t trust in the independent-mindedness of whoever that filed the process.”
The NDC Chair pointed to Richard Dela Sky, a private legal practitioner and journalist who filed the suit, suggesting that he was closely aligned with the government.
“Who doesn’t know the Citi FM man, Richard Sky? Richard Sky works in the chamber of the Attorney-General, and he was sponsored to do his law course by this government. And the man has returned and he’s working with the Majority Leader. There’s circumstantial evidence and that’s my belief.”
When the host raised the issue of the wild claims, the NDC Chair insisted that he was aware of those details about the plaintiff and had evidence to support them.
The NDC National Chairman expressed particular disappointment that the President requested Parliament not to transmit the bill to him.
“I am on the side of Parliament because the President has no reason to ask that Parliament should not submit the bill because the cases that are in court, the last time I checked, there’s no application for an injunction or any actual injunction granted that prevents the President from receiving the bill.
The only application for an injunction that I have seen is to block the President from signing the bill. Receiving and signing are different things. So, if you don’t want to receive the bill, you don’t blame anyone who has gone to court because the reliefs being sought in court do not border on you not receiving. They say don’t work on it. But for the office receiving it, it’s a matter of impunity that is being shown by the President to frustrate the work of parliament” he argued.
Mr Asiedu Nketia believes the President does not want to sign the bill but simply lacks the courage to state that clearly.
“Because parliament has done their work up to a point, and they say to transmit this to the President. You don’t have the right not to receive. You can receive it, and after receiving it, you have options that have been provided under the constitution.
And somebody is in court trying to injunct you from acting on the bill; that injunction does not say don’t receive the bill. So, for you to write to parliament that because I am on some injunction not to sign it, don’t bring it at all, it means you have a pre-meditated agenda. You don’t want to receive it or work on it or do anything with it, but you are not man enough to tell Ghanaians that I don’t want to do it” he noted.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s Supreme Court is yet to sit on the case filed against the bill.
Leader of political movement, The New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar, has clarified his earlier comments about dredging the sea to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
During a recent interview while touring the Ashanti Region, Mr. Bediako sparked controversy by suggesting intentions to extend the sea from the coast to the inland city.
However, in an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on April 10, he explained that his plan was not to extend the sea but to dredge a canal.
He clarified that dredging a canal would enhance industrialization and improve transportation at the port, ultimately aiming to enhance port accessibility for the efficient transportation of goods as part of a broader economic industrialization policy. Additionally, he noted that this initiative would reduce pressure on land transport by heavy-duty vehicles.
“I want Ghanaians to understand that I’m here to build a country. My vision is very clear. That’s how clear my vision is. I can see that development is going to happen this way because you need to connect your water bodies.
“Why do you think your colonial master is hiding that secret from you? But when you go to his country, he’s connected all his waters. He calls them Thames, Canals, Ferry, Woolwich, and secretly he’s transporting things on there,” he said.
Cheddar clarified that when he mentioned dredging to Kumasi, he was referring to a canal and not extending the sea. He further pointed out that if there had already been industrialization in areas like Ada, some development would have taken place.
“If you drill and connect a sea to any river, the name for it, which will be in development, will be a canal.
“Yes, canal. Now, a canal can have any sort of river, lagoon, sea, whatever that it is. And look, when you go to Ada, the water in Ada shares border right with the sea, right there. The opportunity is we could have created a harbor there if there was already industrialisation in those areas,” he added.
The businessman dismissed claims that it was impossible.
“I mean you guys make it look like it’s unaffordable, it’s unacceptable and it cannot be done. [It’s a long time.] No, it’s not. Actually, I’ll tell you. Look, a vision without action is a mere dream.
“You and the dreamer, there’s no difference. That’s what a visionary is, if you have a vision and you can’t find a way to activate the vision, if you don’t apply action, it’s a useless vision. It can be done.
“Once you decide to do it, it gets done. Now, why do I have the confidence to say so? Because I’ve done things. I have raised the first 16th-floor building in a place where they started building one floor, two floors, one floor, and two floors.
“I came and I went, and I put two floors underneath it. On one and a half plots, I put 108 apartments,” he added.
The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has claimed that President Akufo-Addo lacks the courage to openly state his opposition to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values bill, also known as the anti-gay bill.
Despite the bill being unanimously passed by Parliament, it remains on the President’s desk. President Akufo-Addo has stated that he will not sign the bill until the Supreme Court decides on a lawsuit challenging its passage.
This stance has drawn criticism, especially from the NDC, which accuses the President of double standards.
During an appearance on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday, the NDC Chair stated that the President’s rationale for not assenting to the bill clearly indicates his unwillingness to sign it, but he lacks the courage to outrightly express this position.
“Because parliament has done their work up to a point, and they say transmit this to the President.
But for the office receiving it, it’s a matter of impunity that is being shown by the President to frustrate the work of parliament,” he argued.
The former NDC scribe alleged that President Akufo-Addo orchestrated the lawsuit that is supposedly preventing him from assenting to the bill.
He suggested that it was not a coincidence that the President could refer to a lawsuit that had not yet been filed as the basis for his decision not to sign the bill. As a result, he concluded that the President was involved in a plan to frustrate the anti-LGBTQI+ bill from becoming law.
“It is clearly an excuse and it’s a wrong excuse because he [President Akufo-Addo] was citing the court case even before anybody could file it. It tells you that he [President Akufo-Addo] orchestrated the filing.”
“As at the time the President spoke, nobody had gone to court.
Based on this, Mr Asiedu Nketia said, “I don’t trust in the independent-mindedness of whoever that filed the process.
During a traditional ceremony at the Manhyia Palace, Nana Kwame Amo was appointed as the new Otumfuo Tromoo Akwasi Hene, the esteemed traditional bodyguard of the Asantehene.
Formerly known as Sledge Bonnah in private life, Nana Kwame Amo now assumes a pivotal role deeply rooted in Asante history.
The position of Otumfuo Tromoo Akwasi Hene, dating back to the inception of the Asante kingdom, carries immense cultural and symbolic importance.
Central to this role is the Tromoo Akwasi gun, named after the myth surrounding the trɔmo, carefully chosen by Otumfoɔ Opoku Ware II as the abɔsodeɛ (foundation) for this revered firearm. Unique to the Tromoo Akwasi gun is the use of abadayɛ, the foetus of trɔmo, for its ntoa, symbolizing the intricate connection between Asante traditions and spiritual significance embedded within their regalia.
During ceremonial processions, the gun-bearers meticulously carry their firearms, demonstrating respect and adherence to ceremonial protocols. Notably, during the “trane” ritual, where a newly enstooled king affirms his readiness to defend Asanteman, the doku agyapɔmaa (gun) is fired three times, symbolizing a profound commitment to protect the kingdom.
Nana Kwame Amo’s lineage adds historical depth to his appointment. His late grandfather, who previously held this esteemed position, was not only the Asantehene’s father but also the elder brother of Otumfuo’s father, underscoring the traditional practices surrounding succession within the Asante kingdom.
Before officially assuming his role, Nana Kwame Amo underwent the sacred “som kahyire” rite at the revered “Akrafie so” within the Manhyia Palace. This private ritual, conducted by the Asantehene himself, served to educate Nana Kwame Amo about the potent powers and responsibilities associated with the Tromoo Akwasi regalia.
Beyond his ceremonial duties, Nana Kwame Amo upholds dietary restrictions akin to those of the Asantehene, further solidifying his commitment to preserving and honoring Asante traditions in all aspects of his life.
About 50 stalls have been burnt to ashes after the Madina Market in Accra caught fire on Wednesday night.
It is currently unknown what may have caused the inferno that occurred around 9PM.
Officers from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were at the scene to douse the fire.
Deputy Director of Operations at the Ghana National Fire Service, D.O.1. Kofi Forson, who engaged the media, recounted the challenges the firefighters faced in quenching the flame.
“It was not easy for us and there was a lack of access to where the fire was spreading and because it happened in the night, the shops were closed and we had to break through and that made it tedious,” he said.
Currently, affected individuals are counting their losses. Also, no deaths have been reported, however, two traders, out of shock, fainted upon arriving at the scene.

Media personality Abena Korkor, who has been involved in several controversial matters, has for some time been absent.
Many wondered the reason behind the hiatus, and it appears that it is the doing of Abena Korkor’s counsellor.
Rev Charles Dwumfour Appiah, a Senior Minister at Global Life Outreach Ministries (GLOM) is the man of the moment.
Counsellor Appiah, the advisor to media personality Abena Korkor, recently spoke out to counter prevailing misconceptions about her character.
He emphasised that contrary to public perception, Abena Korkor is a kind-hearted individual who is approachable and easy to work with.
Appiah highlighted that he faced no challenges in his efforts to guide Abena Korkor towards positive change.

A senior lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), Professor Lord Mensah, has expressed concerns about Ghana’s current economic outlook.
In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) on April 9, 2024, he pointed out the potential negative consequences of a depreciating currency like the Ghanaian Cedi, particularly its impact on the affordability of essential commodities.
“The depreciation of the Cedi is making the consumption of petrol products expensive. Ghana does not have alternative exports to neutralize this effect.
“Therefore, the continuous depreciation. Cocoa was doing the trick, but the sector is in comatose. The mess is deep, menua!” he said.
According to the Bank of Ghana’s interbank forex rates as of April 8, 2024, the Ghana Cedi is trading against the US Dollar at a buying price of 12.9117 and a selling price of 12.9247.
At a Forex bureau in Accra, the Dollar can be bought at a rate of 13.20 and sold at 13.60.
Against the Pound Sterling, the Cedi is trading at a buying price of 16.3062 and a selling price of 16.3251.
In March 2024, inflation surged to 25.8%, up from February’s 23.2%, representing a 2.6% increase.
This indicates a 25.8% increase in the general price level compared to March 2023. Non-food inflation rose by 22.6%, while food inflation reached 29.6%.
Locally produced items saw a 26.6% increase, while imported items rose by 23.8%. The main drivers of this inflation hike were food and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as transport.
Government spokesperson Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim stated in a press briefing that this increase represents a 2.6 percentage point surge.
Member of Parliament for the Ho West Constituency, Emmanuel Bedzra, has vehemently opposed any mining activities in his constituency.
He has expressed solidarity with the chiefs and people of Abutia, who have raised concerns about the proposed mining of the 32,000-hectare Kalakpa Game Reserve for lithium.
The government is reportedly considering granting the forest to a private company for prospecting, prompting strong objections from local stakeholders.
In an interview with Citi News, MP Bedzra highlighted the lack of consultation with the land’s custodians and emphasized that mining has contributed minimally to Ghana’s economy. He has submitted a question in Parliament to seek clarification from the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources on this matter.
Furthermore, he stated that if he were to become president, he would ban mining entirely.
He emphasized that mining has contributed minimally to Ghana’s economy and stated that if he were to become president, he would ban it outright.
“I am against mining and if I become president, I will ban mining completely because it doesn’t add anything. It doesn’t add anything to our GDP because there are countries without natural resources and they are making it.
“We have everything in Ghana. We have cocoa, gold, we have bauxite, and even oil and what have we achieved with them? Despite that, we are holding a cup begging the IMF for money.
“If we can feed ourselves through our land and vegetation, I don’t think we need anybody to support us or need anybody to come and destroy our vegetation.”
Founder of the National Interest Movement (NIM), Dr. Abu Sakara Foster, has defended Alan Kyerematen, founder of the Movement for Change (M4C), regarding his call for Ghanaians to vote for a “Christian leader.”
Dr. Sakara believes that Mr. Kyerematen’s remarks have been blown out of proportion. He noted that other individuals have made more controversial statements without facing similar levels of criticism.
In an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show on Wednesday, April 10, Dr. Sakara suggested that some people are using Mr. Kyerematen’s statement for political gain in the upcoming December 7 general elections.
He emphasized that Ghana has maintained peace among its Muslim community under the leadership of Christian presidents. Dr. Sakara reassured that having a Christian leader would not threaten any religious group in the country.
“I think that it is over-dramatised. After all, people have said that it is time for a Muslim leader and nobody criticised it.
“I want to point out one thing that it is under a Christian president that we had a Hajj Village. It is under a Christian President that we have had a big plane land at Tamale for the first time to take people to Hajj.
“It is under a Christian President that we have had one of the most revered religious leaders in this country, the Chief Imam, who is promoted at all levels. So how does a Christian president prevent you from doing what you want to do as a Muslim,” he said.
While addressing congregants of the Church of Pentecost Dr. Wyatt Assembly, Mr. Kyerematen said “As a predominantly Christian nation, as Christians, it is our responsibility that we elect a Christian leader, who is also a Christ-like leader.”
“We want a leader who has the vision to bring hope to the hopeless, but we also want a leader who will be a servant leader to serve the people and not to Lord over them. We also want a leader who has integrity. These were the characteristics of our Lord Jesus who today is risen,” he said.
Mr. Kyerematen’s assertion has been met with disapproval from both the NDC and NPP. Activists from the latter have strongly condemned the claim, viewing it as a direct attack on their flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a Muslim.
They criticize his statement as divisive and in opposition to the religious inclusivity in Ghanaian politics.
The Minister-designate of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, has unveiled the newly launched Performance Tracker, aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability in infrastructure projects across Ghana.
The tracker addresses concerns about project accuracy and reliability, especially regarding the use of artist’s impressions to depict outcomes.
It currently features over 13,000 projects nationwide and is an upgraded version of the Delivery Tracker introduced by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in 2020.
The Performance Tracker covers various projects, including infrastructure and service delivery initiatives, validated across all sixteen regions of Ghana. The latest data available is from June 2023, with ongoing efforts to update the tracker beyond this timeframe.
The minister-designate highlighted the user-friendly nature of the Performance Tracker, accessible through both a website and a mobile application. He emphasized the rigorous validation process, including geo-tagging and photographing projects for transparency.
The Performance Tracker is a comprehensive database that aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the execution of infrastructure projects in Ghana.
“As of June 2023, there are over 13, 000 projects across the 261 districts, across the 16 regions, across the 28 ministries that have been validated and updated on this platform.”
The platform, he added, has undergone a rigorous validation process, including geo-tagging and photographing projects for transparency.
“The performance tracker is a database that showcases the performances of the government of Ghana and it is going to show you the various projects that have been executed across the country. This database has two interfaces; a website and an application. Today the mobile phone is very powerful too and sometimes even beyond what your desktop can do.
“It showcases the performances of Ghana across the 267 districts and the 28 ministries and the 16 regions,” he added.
The government has unveiled a digital platform to allow citizens to track projects undertaken in the past few years. The new platform is said to be a compendium of over 13,000 projects across the country.#NewsCentralpic.twitter.com/hq9mND8VVi
Azumah Nelson, the renowned boxing icon, revealed in an interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV that his son, Dalvin Azumah Nelson Jr, has decided to step away from boxing after initially trying it out.
According to Azumah Nelson, his son has found passion in a different profession and was unable to fully commit to the demands of professional boxing, leading him to give up on the sport.
Azumah Nelson expressed his support for his son’s decision and continues to play his role as a supportive father in his son’s new chosen field.
“He realized that boxing is not for kids from well-to-do homes. It’s a sport for hustlers and people from not-too-good backgrounds. I’m not worried that he quit the sport because I wasn’t the one receiving the blows. He was the one receiving it and realized he could not take the blows.
“I introduced him to boxing at a young age and he grew up with it but he later realized he couldn’t do it again. It’s a difficult sport that requires dedication and determination. You wake up at 4am to go for jogging and then hit the gym a few hours later,” Azumah said.
Azumah Nelson also opened up on some of his fighting strategies, which included not allowing his opponent to rattle him.
“I never allowed my opponents to get me angry because once you get angry, you lose everything. In whatever you do, you have to be able to resist provocations because everything goes out of the window the moment you get angry.
“Some boxers deliberately tried to provoke me but I made sure I kept my cool and focused on the fights,” he added.
Nigeria and Zambia have secured their spots at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in France later this year.
The Super Falcons clinched their place with a 1-0 aggregate victory over South Africa. After a 1-0 win in Abuja, they held South Africa to a goalless draw in Pretoria.
This will be Nigeria’s fifth appearance in the Olympic women’s football tournament, returning after missing out in 2012, 2016, and 2020. They are placed in Group C and will face Spain, Japan, and Brazil, with their first match against Brazil in Bordeaux on July 25.
Meanwhile, Zambia overturned a first-leg deficit to qualify ahead of Morocco. Despite a 2-1 loss at home, they secured a 2-0 win in the second leg for a 3-2 aggregate score.
Barbra Banda, the Orlando Pride striker, scored the opener and a penalty in the 105th minute to seal Zambia’s qualification.
They are drawn in Group B alongside the United States, Germany, and Australia, and will kick off their campaign against the USWNT in Nice on July 25.
Rachel Daly of Aston Villa has announced her retirement from international football.
Daly made her debut for England in 2016, scoring her first goal against Serbia.
With appearances at two World Cups and one European Championship, Daly earned a total of 84 senior caps for England, scoring 16 goals. She played a significant role in England’s success under Sarina Wiegman.
Daly started in every game of England’s journey to the Euro 2022 final, playing as a left wing-back as England won the title at Wembley.
She was also a key member of the team that reached the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final in Australia last summer, marking a historic achievement for the Lionesses.
In a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, Daly said, external: “I would love nothing more than to play for England forever, but the time has come for me to hang my boots up on the international stage.
“While today is an extremely difficult day for me, it also one filled with reflection and immense gratitude. Playing for and representing England has been a privilege.”
A report by The Fourth Estate on scholarship funding has revealed that a significant portion of the programs supported by the Scholarships Secretariat were offered by Ghanaian universities, which typically have lower fees.
This approach could potentially save money and allow more deserving students to benefit from government scholarships.
One beneficiary highlighted in the report is Mathias Abednego Bonir, who received a total of 81,948.46 Canadian dollars (CAD) for a post-graduate certificate in Project Management in 2019 and Human Resource Management in 2020 at the Georgian College in Canada.
The Secretariat spent CAD16,441.13 on his tuition in 2019 and CAD17,507.33 in 2020. Additionally, he received a monthly stipend of CAD2,000 during his studies.
His monthly stipend alone amounted to GHS19,700, which could have covered the full tuition (GHS17,696) for a Master of Science in Project Management at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).
The total fees and stipend for Mr. Bonir’s two programs could have covered the fees for 45 MSc Project Management students at UPSA and 39 at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The Scholarships Secretariat spent funds on other programs that are available in several Ghanaian universities, including:

President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Dr. Joseph Obeng, has expressed support for the 24-hour economy policy proposed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.
He highlighted the importance of improving the existing policy, which is already in practice.
Speaking at a meeting with GUTA members in the presence of John Mahama, Dr. Obeng advocated for a strategic shift in the timing of certain commercial activities.
He suggested that these activities be relocated to nighttime hours to reduce congestion in busy market areas during the day.
Dr. Joseph Obeng believes that this adjustment could lead to better utilization of space and smoother operations for traders, especially during periods of lower pedestrian traffic.
“We had a programme at the school of mass communication and at that time, people were opposing it but I told them no, even if it is already there, we can always enhance it. There is more that we can do in the night. There are so many things that create nuisance during the day.
“When you go to Opera Square, when you go to Kantamanto or Okaishie, in the afternoon when people are moving, that is when we are offloading our goods. So, it makes the place very congested.
“So, let’s think about the things that create nuisance during the day and fix them in the night,” he stated.
The Herald has reported on a cocaine-related crime at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), resulting in the suspension of several Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) officers, including senior officer Eric Nartey Yeboah, also known as “Chairman Dollar.”
The scandal came to light after a significant quantity of illegal drugs was seized at Brussels Airport in Belgium. Reports suggest that the cocaine was smuggled through KIA on March 23, 2024, aboard the Moroccan national carrier, Royal Air Maroc, with the alleged assistance of a GACL staff member.
A Dutch national named Proeger Delgey Bianca was apprehended at Brussels Airport with 8.5 kilograms of suspected cocaine, believed to have been transported through KIA.
Following the arrest, the Narcotic Control Commission (NACOC) initiated an investigation into the drug smuggling incident. Belgian authorities reached out to Ghanaian counterparts seeking clarification.
Eric Nartey Yeboah, recently appointed as Cargo Security Manager, was implicated in the scandal. Referred to as “Chairman Dollar,” he was reportedly present at KIA during the drug movement. His suspicious behavior, observed at the airport around 3 am on the day of the incident, raised concerns.
As part of the investigation, NACOC requested the release of Aviation Security Personnel who were on duty at the Central Screening area on the preceding day.
In response, the GACL Board approved a thorough investigation, and a committee was established within KIA management to probe the matter and submit a report by the end of April.
Yeboah, a prominent figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), holds positions at both regional and constituency levels. He previously served in the General Aviation department of GACL and has faced disciplinary actions in the past.
Additionally, reports have surfaced regarding two suspicious aircraft spotted at the Airforce Base in Accra, one of which was reportedly linked to Yeboah’s jurisdiction. The aircraft, traced to Saint Vincent de Grenadine, had been reported missing, raising further concerns about illicit activities within Ghana’s aviation sector.
The ‘St Vincent Times’, a popular news portal in the South American Island, on December 25, reported the development as follows:
“The aircraft departed from Canouan on Friday 22nd December 2023 at 2:27 p.m. for a sightseeing expedition. However, just 7 minutes into the flight, it disappeared from radar.”
According to credible sources, the N337LR aircraft was initially believed to have a flight crew of three passengers and one pilot.
However, upon further investigation, it was determined that the flight crew consisted of two individuals and one passenger. While specific identities were not disclosed by the St Vincent Times, it was confirmed that at least two individuals aboard were of Mexican nationality. This revelation contradicted previous claims and suggested a deliberate action rather than an accidental disappearance.
The investigation also revealed that N337LR was not detected by radar in neighboring islands, leading to concerns that its transponder may have been deactivated during the flight.
Unlike larger aircraft, N337LR lacks ACARS, which would have facilitated communication with Air Traffic Control (ATC) radar stations. This, combined with the aircraft’s undisclosed flight path, raised suspicions about its intentions.
An aviation expert cited by the St Vincent Times noted that the Gulfstream would take only 6 minutes to travel from CIW to the mainland, despite having fuel for over 4 hours. This discrepancy in flight duration led to questions about the aircraft’s true destination.
Another source suggested that the flight plan, indicating a four-hour fuel supply for sightseeing purposes, was illogical for a Gulfstream of that model. It is believed that N337LR may have landed on a private airstrip in South America, potentially in Venezuela, due to its proximity to the Grenadines.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has been monitoring N337LR for some time, as Gulfstream aircraft are increasingly used for cocaine transportation from South America. These planes have the capacity to transport large quantities of drugs across vast distances, making them attractive for smuggling operations.
The aircraft’s involvement in a flight or reactor test departing from Manzanillo in Mexico on January 22, 2023, which was subsequently aborted, raised further suspicions.
Additionally, Whatsup News confirmed that N337LR is currently available for purchase on AVBUYER. The aircraft’s ownership history, revealed through Flightaware data, indicates multiple changes of hands, adding complexity to the investigation surrounding its disappearance.
A scandal involving a cocaine-related crime at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) has led to the interdiction of several Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) officers, including senior officer Eric Nartey Yeboah, also known as “Chairman Dollar,” as reported by The Herald.
The scandal unfolded following the arrest of Dutch national Proeger Delgey Bianca at Brussels Airport in Belgium. She was apprehended with 8.5 kilograms of suspected cocaine, believed to have been smuggled through KIA on March 23, 2024, aboard the Moroccan national carrier, Royal Air Maroc, with the alleged assistance of a GACL staff member.
The Narcotic Control Commission (NACOC) has launched an investigation into the drug smuggling case, with Belgian authorities seeking clarification from Ghanaian authorities regarding the matter.
Eric Nartey Yeboah, recently appointed as Cargo Security Manager at KIA, has been implicated in the scandal. His presence at KIA during the time of the drug movement, particularly his actions around 3 am on the day the drugs were believed to have left Accra for Brussels, raised suspicions.
In response to the incident, the GACL Board has approved a thorough investigation, with a committee established within the management of KIA tasked to submit a report by the end of April.
Additionally, recent reports have linked Yeboah to a missing American-registered private jet, further complicating the ongoing investigations and raising questions about his involvement in aviation-related matters.
According to reliable sources, the N337LR aircraft was found to have a flight crew consisting of two individuals and one passenger, contrary to prior information indicating the presence of three passengers and one pilot. While specific identities were not disclosed, it was confirmed that at least two individuals aboard were of Mexican nationality.
The St Vincent Times learned that authorities were aware of the identity of the flight crew and the sole passenger, suggesting that N337LR did not vanish by chance. The aircraft was not detected by radar in neighboring islands, prompting fears that its transponder may have been deactivated while in flight.
A transponder is an avionic device that sends data and responses to requests from Air Traffic Control (ATC) radar stations. The N337LR lacks ACARS, which would have facilitated communication with ATC when its transponder is off.
The aircraft had reportedly embarked on a sightseeing expedition from Canouan, with its intended flight path crossing the northern region of Canouan. An aviation expert stated that the missing Gulfstream would take 6 minutes to travel from CIW to the mainland, and the N337LR had fuel for over 4 hours.
The flight plan was considered illogical, as an aircraft of that model would not require a four-hour fuel supply for sightseeing purposes. It is believed that N337LR may have landed on a private airstrip in South America, potentially in Venezuela, as it is located just one hour away from the Grenadines.
The DEA has been monitoring N337LR for some time, as Gulf-stream aircraft are increasingly used as ‘narco planes’ for the illicit transportation of cocaine from South America. These aircraft can transport 14 or more passengers across around 4,000 miles and can operate from relatively basic and clandestine airstrips.
On January 22, 2023, N337LR was sighted conducting a flight or reactor test, which it aborted departing from Manzanillo (at Maya De Oro International Airport in Mexico). The missing plane is presently available for purchase on AVBUYER, with records indicating several changes of ownership.
The Fourth Estate has released a portion of a list containing the names of individuals believed to have obtained government scholarships through political affiliations or without meeting the ‘needy’ criteria.
The dat obtained for the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 academic years revealed that 966 scholarships were fully funded by the Ghanaian government. During these periods, the Scholarships Secretariat disbursed a total of GHS237.5 million in 2019 and GHS200 million in 2020.
Recent reports by The Fourth Estate have highlighted various anomalies in Ghana’s scholarship system. These reports indicate that a significant portion of the scholarship funds has been awarded to individuals connected to the political and social elite.
Below is the initial section of the list of beneficiaries of government scholarships for 2019 and 2020 as provided by The Fourth Estate.
Executive Director of the Africa Center for Health Policy Research and Analysis, Dr. Thomas Anaba, has revealed that the delay in clearing medical supplies donated by the Global Fund has resulted in a significant increase in tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV/AIDS cases.
The donated supplies, including antiretroviral drugs for HIV/AIDS patients and mosquito nets for pregnant women, have been held at the Tema Port since July 2023 due to import duties.
As a consequence of the delays, the Global Fund has halted further shipments of essential medical supplies.
Dr. Anaba expressed his concerns about a potential surge in tuberculosis, malaria, and AIDS cases compared to last year’s figures, emphasizing the urgent need to clear the medical supplies to prevent a widespread health crisis.
“There is an increase in the cases of tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS from last year’s figure, and the complications of people dying from AIDS have also increased. Women getting malaria during pregnancy have increased because of this.”
Dr. Anaba proposed that Ghana should proactively communicate its need for medical supplies to the Global Fund in advance. Additionally, he suggested that the country should allocate budgetary resources for the clearance of these supplies to prevent future delays.
“Ghana has the statistics of how many people get tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS every year and this can be planned with a top-up percentage of 10 percent and then we can budget for how much of these drugs that we need and then we contact Global Fund on how much they can give us ahead of time and then we budget for money to clear the drugs.”
In a recent sermon titled “The Great Commission 1: Go,” Pastor Mensa Otabil, the General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), issued a stern warning against immigrating to Europe, emphasizing a significant shift in global evangelism dynamics.
He contends that European nations are losing sight of the foundation of their prosperity, which will lead to their eventual collapse.
He likened Europe to a “sinking ship” on the brink of capsizing.
“God also warned the Israelites, remember when you are wealthy and strong you do not forget the Lord your God.
“They have forgotten the God who made them who they are and if you look at the Global world, Europe, and the Western world, they are going down very fast. Those of you who are running there, are running into a sinking ship. It’s going down, I mean it is just a matter of time,” he said.
Citing Matthew 28:16–20, Pastor Otabil highlighted the biblical instructions of Jesus to his disciples to proclaim the gospel.
He noted that Africa is now emerging as the new hub for spreading the Gospel, contrasting Europe’s historical role as the epicenter of Christianity.
Pastor Otabil described this shift as a phenomenon of ‘reverse evangelization,’ signaling a dramatic change in the spread of Christianity worldwide.
“We in Africa have become mostly those who have the Gospel, and they in Europe have become those who don’t have the Gospel.
“So those who brought us the Gospel are now empty of the Gospel so there is reverse evangelization taking place all over the world from Africa to the rest of the world, it is no longer from Europe to Africa.
“It’s now Africa to the world because Europe has become post-Christian. Until probably about the last 60 -50 years, Europe was the main center of Christianity, that is how all the main Christian ideas came about,” he stated.
Pastor Otabil also preached about the decline of Europe, attributing it to what he described as “apostasy” – a turning away from religious belief.
“Civilization, as we perceive it, is not the solution; rather, it’s the source of their downfall.
“America will not be the superpower again, and Europe will not be the superpower again.
“They are just going down and the main reason is they have forgotten the source of their help. We think that it is civilization, but the Bible calls it apostasy.”
He urged Africans to take up the mantle and spread the gospel across the world.
“So when we think about the Gospel, we don’t think about people bringing the Gospel to Africa, we are thinking of Africa taking the Gospel to the rest of the world…When Jesus said go to the nations he meant every group of people who do not know the Gospel, go to them.”
Max Verstappen dominated the Japanese Grand Prix, leading a Red Bull one-two with teammate Sergio Perez.
Verstappen, who took an early race stoppage at Suzuka in his stride, secured his third victory in four races this season, extending his championship lead.
The race was red-flagged on the first lap following a collision between Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo and Alex Albon’s Williams. Both drivers were unhurt, but the barriers needed repairing, leading to a 20-minute stoppage.
Verstappen, starting from pole, controlled the race from the front, while Perez, despite a less serene race, comfortably secured second place.
Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz passed teammate Charles Leclerc late on to take third, utilizing a different strategy. Leclerc, starting eighth, deployed a one-stop strategy and finished fourth, showcasing impressive tyre management.
McLaren’s Lando Norris finished fifth, ahead of a close fight between Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, Mercedes’ George Russell, and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. Russell eventually passed Piastri on the final lap to secure seventh.
Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton finished ninth in a disappointing race for the team, while Yuki Tsunoda secured the final point for Red Bull.
Verstappen’s victory, coupled with Perez’s second place, underlined Red Bull’s overwhelming superiority in the race, as they continue to dominate the 2024 season.

Founder of the National Interest Movement (NIM), Dr. Abu Sakara Foster, has explained the reasoning behind his collaboration with Alan Kyerematen, the founder of the Movement for Change (M4C).
He emphasized that their partnership is motivated by a shared desire for the progress of the nation.
Dr. Sakara highlighted that their goal is to introduce innovative policies that can tackle the challenges impeding the country’s transformation agenda.
During an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show on Wednesday, April 10, he stressed that their alliance goes beyond personal interests and is solely aimed at serving the nation.
He asserted that their collaboration is intended to facilitate the contribution of independent-minded individuals to the country’s development, without being influenced by partisan affiliations.
“The desire to think outside the box led us to a union of minds and then we said why don’t we create some kind of electoral alliance that will address this but for a change, it is not about you and me but we need to put together a framework and a key understanding that will allow other people to join because then they know that it is not about us,” he said.
When asked about the initiator of their collaboration, Dr. Sakara explained that it was Mr. Kyerematen who reached out to him.
He clarified that this approach occurred prior to Mr. Kyerematen’s defeat in the NPP’s presidential primaries.
“Well, I think he approached me first. I know him but I don’t know him that much. He approached me from the point of view of his transformation plan. He approached me not for political purposes but for the purpose of formulating a great transformation plan,” he added.

The primary goal of the ARC is to unite Ghanaians from various demographics, with a particular emphasis on engaging the youth and women, ultimately aiming to elect the first independent candidate as President of Ghana.

The Country Director of Awsome Bible College in Kumasi and a prominent religious figure, Rev. Emmanuel Boakye, has expressed his concerns over the delay in passing the anti-LGBTQ bill into law.
The proposed anti-LGBTQI bill in Ghana has sparked a contentious debate, raising significant concerns about human rights, religious beliefs, and political implications.
President Akufo-Addo’s decision not to assent to the bill, despite its passage by parliament, has led to criticism from religious bodies and traditional leaders.
Rev. Emmanuel Boakye emphasized the potential consequences if the bill is not promptly signed into law.
Rev. Emmanuel Boakye
During a recent press conference, Rev. Boakye highlighted that homosexuality is considered an abomination and a threat to both Christianity and Ghanaian traditions in the Christian society.
He stated that religious leaders are prepared to take all necessary actions to compel President Akufo-Addo to sign the Anti-LGBTQI Bill.
Rev. Boakye warned that if President Akufo-Addo does not sign the bill immediately, he will mobilize all religious leaders to prevent the upcoming 2024 elections from taking place.

Parliament on Wednesday, February 28, passed the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill also known as the anti-LGBTQ bill after three years following its introduction.
The Anti-LGBTQ+ bill aims to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana. It proposes strict penalties, including imprisonment, for individuals engaged in activities related to homosexuality and LGBTQ+ advocacy.
Additionally, the bill seeks to prohibit the promotion of LGBTQ+ rights, organizations, and events in Ghana.
Prior to its passage, there had been several amendments to the bill. After deliberation, Parliament decided that the minimum custodial sentence has been set at three years, with a maximum of five years for promoters and sympathisers.
Additionally, individuals caught directly engaging in these activities will face a minimum sentence of six months, extendable to a maximum of three years.
Ghana is among many African countries that are working to eliminate LGBTQ activities from the society. Uganda enacted one of the world’s harshest anti-gay laws in May, which calls for the death penalty for certain same-sex acts.
Already, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has described the passage of bill as “profoundly disturbing.”
Presently, President Akufo-Addo has withheld his assent to the bill over the fact that the constitutionality of the bill is being contested at the Supreme Court due to a case filed by one Richard Dela Sky.

In January this year, violence erupted at the voting centre in Yendi, disrupting the vote-counting process.

Meanwhile, Farouk Aliu Mahama is pleased with the NEC’s decision and has called on all party stalwarts to reconcile after the unfortunate incident.

A Chinese national, identified only as Wu, along with five Ghanaian collaborators, has been apprehended for encroaching on the mining concession of Zoar Mining Enterprise in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region.
The illegal miners, using excavators and other earth-moving equipment, have caused significant damage to over 50 acres of the 120-acre concession owned by the company.
They claimed to be working for a person named Ernest, who is currently evading arrest.
The arrest of these armed miners comes after extensive surveillance conducted by the security personnel of Zoar Mining Enterprise.
The suspects were arrested around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, and subsequently handed over to the Ministries Police in Accra, following directives from officials of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
Zoar Mining Enterprise was granted a 5-year mining lease, subject to renewal, by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, on November 15, 2023, to mine gold and diamond.
However, prior to commencing operations, the illegal miners had already invaded the concession, with over 40 of them engaging in illegal mining activities.
Nana Akwasi Yentumi Asante, Operations and Sustainability Manager of Zoar Mining Enterprise, expressed satisfaction with the successful operation to remove the illegal miners from the concession.
“The arrest was done by our company’s security unit and was calm, well-coordinated, and without any blood flow. We started the ambush at around 1 a.m. today.” he said.
He said Zoar Mining has “lost millions of Ghana cedis” to the illegal mining activities.
“If we were to do our own business, production in the worst-case scenario is between 4kg and 15kg of gold per concession of such nature,” he said.
Appalled by the development, Nana Asante warned the company will do everything possible to protect its concessions, which can rake in more funds into government coffers in taxes.
