We will work hard, there is no pressure on us – Kotoko assistant coach

Assistant coach of Asante Kotoko, David Ocloo, has stated that there is no ‘pressure’ on the technical team despite the team’s recent defeat in the Ghana Premier League.

The Porcupine Warriors suffered their fifth defeat in their last six games on Thursday evening, losing to Nsoatreman at the Baba Yara Stadium on matchday 25. Mohammed Abdul Rahaman’s late winner sealed all three points for Maxwell Konadu’s side and extended Kotoko’s winless run to six games in the league.

While fans have begun to question the future of the coaching staff at the club, Ocloo remains confident that the technical team will be able to turn things around.

“When things are not going well, who do they blame? It’s always the technical team. We will take it in good faith, we are still working and we will turn things around,” he said.

“We are a work in progress, there is no pressure on us. We just have to go back and work hard, and try to turn things around.”

The challenge ahead doesn’t get any easier for Kotoko, as they are set to face Dreams FC, Samartex, and Medeama in their next three league games.

Kudus names Jay-Jay Okocha as the greatest African player ever

Ghanaian international Mohammed Kudus has hailed former Nigerian superstar Augustine “Jay-Jay” Okocha as the greatest African footballer of all time.

Okocha, renowned for his style and flair, captured the hearts of many fans during his playing days. The ex-Super Eagles star achieved numerous successes, including winning the BBC African Footballer of the Year award in back-to-back years, 2004 and 2005.

Despite never clinching the CAF African Player of the Year award, Okocha was a finalist three times (1998, 2003, and 2004) and claimed the Nigerian Footballer of the Year title on seven occasions.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Kudus praised Okocha for his enduring influence, particularly noting his creative talent and ability to captivate audiences.

“I will say [Jay-Jay] Okocha,” the West Ham United midfielder said when quizzed about who he thinks is the greatest African player ever.

Reports on Global Fund suspending shipments to Ghana false – Health Ministry

The Ministry of Health has refuted claims that the Global Fund has suspended the supply of health commodities to Ghana.

Earlier reports had indicated that the Global Fund had halted shipments of essential medical supplies due to delays in clearing previously donated items stuck at Tema Port.

However, in a statement issued on Friday, April 12, the Ministry clarified, “We hereby, wish to state categorically and emphatically that the Global Fund has neither suspended nor intend to suspend any shipments of medicines and other health commodities to Ghana.”

Contrary to earlier reports, the Ministry of Health has confirmed that it has received an itinerary from the Global Fund for the delivery of medicines and other health commodities expected in 2024.

The Ministry stated that the first consignment has already been delivered on Monday, 12th April, 2024.

Additionally, the Ministry reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing the health needs of Ghanaians.

“The commitment of the Government, through the Ministry of Health and its development partners, to meet the health needs of all people living in Ghana continues to be our collective top priority.”

On April 12, the Ministry of Health received 14 containers out of a total of 182 at the Tema Port. These containers contained essential medicines for antiretroviral, tuberculosis (TB), and malaria treatments, donated by the Global Fund.

  • Armed robbers attack 10 vehicles on Trabuom-Foase road, strip victims naked

On Friday morning, a group of around six suspected robbers armed with AK-47 assault rifles attacked tens of commuters traveling on the Nwineso-Trabuom-Foase road in the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred at about 5 a.m. and targeted at least 10 vehicles transporting mostly traders to Kumasi.

According to an eyewitness interviewed by Nhyira FM (whose name was withheld), the robbers barricaded the road at a specific spot on the Nwineso Number 1-Trabuom section.

They proceeded to rob the commuters at gunpoint, taking unspecified amounts of money, mobile phones, wedding rings, and other valuable items. The victims were forced to lie face down during the robbery.

“Our driver first saw a flashlight from the robbers but mistook it for an oncoming vehicle. He drove past a man who appeared to be attending to nature’s call. We then ran into a group of six young men wielding these assault rifles used by police and the military. Then, they rushed to our vehicle and demanded we hand over everything in our possession to them. One of them slapped me before he demanded I hand over my money. I trembled.”

“The robbers will then rush to attack passengers anytime a vehicle gets to the barricade. An old woman complained bitterly to the robbers about her aching feet, but they wouldn’t budge. They assaulted her despite her appeals,” she is quoted to have said by MyJoyOnline in Twi.

The eyewitness reported that the robbers not only robbed the commuters but also manhandled and stripped some of them naked. They physically assaulted some of the male victims, including a driver, during the ordeal.

“Another woman in her 30s was forced to strip naked in front of the robbers. They insisted she had hidden some of her money in her private parts. Even if they were to find 50 pesewas in your possession after the first search, they had threatened to shoot you. We have been left traumatised.”

Recently, the Nwineso-Trabuom-Foase road has become a safe haven for robbers. In a recent incident, a commuter was killed by a group of armed robbers who had mounted barricades on the road.

Despite the presence of a police patrol team stationed on that robbery-prone stretch, the incident reportedly occurred in the absence of the police. This has raised concerns among victims of Friday’s robbery incident about the current absence of the police in the area.

Dep. SSNIT Director General resigns over alleged tension with Osafo-Maafo’s son

The Deputy Director General in charge of Finance and Administration at the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Michael Addo, has resigned with immediate effect.

His resignation is reportedly due to tension between himself and the newly appointed Director General, Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo.

Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo is SSNIT Director-General

Sources suggest that Osafo-Maafo was allegedly mistreated during his tenure as a deputy, and his recent promotion to Director General may have prompted Addo’s decision to step down.

Mr Addo’s resignation came shortly after outgoing Director General, Dr. John Ofori Tenkorang, presented his handing over notes to the Board of the Trust on Friday, April 12, 2024, before the Monday deadline to vacate his position.

President Akufo-Addo terminated Dr. Ofori Tenkorang’s appointment on Wednesday, April 9, and appointed Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo as his replacement.

This led to Pearl Nana Ama Darko, the Deputy Director General for Operations and Benefits, being reassigned to the role of Commissioner for Support Services at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

Juliana Kpedekpo has taken over from Pearl Nana Ama as the new Deputy Director General for Operations and Benefits.

The President is expected to appoint a new Deputy Director General for Investment and Development to replace Kofi Osafo-Maafo, as well as another deputy for Finance and Administration to succeed Michael Addo in the coming days.

  • Scholarships Bonanza: Former Miss Ghana, others on full list – Part 2

Scholarships Bonanza: Former Miss Ghana, others on full list – Part 2

A former beauty queen, Giusepina Baafi, is on a list of scholarship beneficiaries obtained by the Fourth Estate in response to a Right to Information request. Miss Baafi, who won the Miss Ghana pageant in 2013, was given € 18,500 as stipend to study for her Master’s at the Schellhammer Business School in Spain.

She got the award six years after she won the coveted crown which would later be a subject of controversy, leading to her resignation.

Also on the list are Sidney Osei-Owusu, Kieve Kuuku Kittoe and Abednego Mathias Bonir. They received multiple scholarships.

Sidney Osei-Owusu received £28,330 in 2019 to cover his living expenses and tuition for an MSc degree in Management at the Brunel University in London. In 2020, the secretariat again paid GBP15,750 for his MBA at the University of the West of England.

For Kieve Kuuku Kittoe, he got US$ 38,475 for an MA in Design Management at Savanna College in the United States in 2019. The following year, Mr Kittoe also received GBP14,500 for an MA in Visual Communication at the University of Derby in the United Kingdom.

Mathias Abednego Bonir received a total of 81,948.46 Canadian dollars (CAD) — the equivalent of GHS807,192 (based on today’s exchange rate of GHS9.85) for a post-graduate certificate in Project Management in 2019, as well as Human Resource Management in 2020. He attended the Georgian College in Canada.

The Secretariat spent CAD16,441.13 on his tuition in 2019 and CAD17,507.33 in 2020. He received CAD2,000 as stipend monthly in the course of his studies.

His stipend alone amounted to GHS19,700.00 monthly. This amount is more than sufficient to cover the full tuition (GHS17,696) for a Master of Science in Project Management at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).

Mr Bonir’s stipend could almost have covered the total fees (GHS20,423) for a Master of Science in Project Management at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

His total fees and stipend for the two programmes he pursued would have been adequate to cover the fees of 45 MSc Project Management students at UPSA and 39 at KNUST.

Apart from these beneficiaries The Fourth Estate’s investigations revealed the funnelling of scholarship funds to influential people, as well as children, relatives and associates of powerful figures at the expense of the brilliant but underprivileged.

The Fourth Estate conducted an analysis of the data specifically focusing on scholarships funded by the government of Ghana. This analysis included a breakdown of the expenditures on scholarship recipients in various countries, details of the programmes pursued by the beneficiaries and their backgrounds.

From our analysis, in 2019-2020, the Scholarship Secretariat spent at least 291,480 pounds sterling (GBP), 146,502 US dollars (USD) and 7,685 Canadian dollars (CAD) respectively on influential individuals and the associates of the political elite.

According to the Secretariat, it disbursed GHS237.5 million in 2019 and GHS200 million in 2020.

In the last few days, The Fourth Estate has been publishing series of reports highlighting some grave anomalies in Ghana’s scholarships system where, for example, a good chunk of available funding had gone to people connected to the political and social elite.

The Fourth Estate provides below the second part of the list of government of Ghana scholarships beneficiaries for the years 2019 and 2020:

Tariq Lamptey to miss Brighton’s game against Burnley

In his Friday afternoon press conference, Roberto De Zerbi announced that Ghanaian defender Tariq Lamptey will miss Saturday’s match against Burnley due to a muscle injury.

The 23-year-old’s return is expected in May, though the origin of the injury remains unclear.

Lamptey’s last appearance for Brighton was in a 3-0 home loss to Arsenal on April 6, 2024. He has faced several injury setbacks this season and toward the end of the previous season.

Additionally, De Zerbi mentioned that Bart Verbruggen will start in goal, with Billy Gilmour, James Milner, and Adam Webster nearing their return to the squad.

“The situation is tough as we have nine injured players. Ferguson, Webster, Lamptey, Milner, Gilmour, March, Mitoma and Hinshelwood. It’s more or less the same squad we played against Arsenal.

“Julio Enciso can’t play tomorrow. I don’t know if it’s a tough injury, but he’s not available.”

West Ham suffer 2-0 defeat in first leg of Europa League quarter-final

West Ham suffered a late collapse as they fell to a 2-0 defeat in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Bayer Leverkusen.

The Hammers had defended resolutely for 83 minutes before Lukasz Fabianski was beaten by Jonas Hoffman. Victor Boniface added a second in stoppage time, leaving West Ham with a tough task in the second leg.

Despite missing injured Jarrod Bowen and suspended Edson Alvarez, West Ham showed promise on the counter-attack. Michail Antonio created a good chance for Mohammed Kudus, but their efforts were largely defensive.

Fabianski made several key saves to keep Leverkusen at bay, but he couldn’t prevent Hoffman’s late strike. The task became even harder when Boniface headed in a second.

The result leaves West Ham facing an uphill battle in the second leg, especially with Lucas Paqueta suspended. The Hammers will need a strong performance at the London Stadium to keep their European hopes alive.

  • Atalanta thrash Liverpool in Europa League quarter-final

Atalanta thrash Liverpool in Europa League quarter-final

Liverpool suffered a lacklustre performance as they were stunned 3-0 by Atalanta in a Europa League quarter-final, raising questions about Jurgen Klopp’s future in European nights at Anfield.

The defeat jeopardizes Liverpool’s hopes of reaching the final in Dublin, with Atalanta taking control of the tie thanks to Gianluca Scamacca’s brace and a late goal from Mario Pasalic.

Liverpool struggled to create chances and lacked coherence throughout the match, with the loss marking their first home defeat since February last year against Real Madrid.

Despite an early chance from Harvey Elliott hitting the woodwork, Atalanta took the lead in the first half through Scamacca. Liverpool started the second half brightly, but Scamacca struck again to extend Atalanta’s lead.

Klopp tried to rally the fans to lift the atmosphere at Anfield, but Atalanta remained dominant, with Pasalic sealing the victory late in the game.

The warning signs were evident from the start, with Atalanta threatening early on. Liverpool struggled to respond effectively, with Atalanta’s fluid attacking play causing problems.

Despite Liverpool’s efforts to claw their way back into the game, Atalanta continued to assert their dominance, leaving Liverpool with a mountain to climb in the second leg.

The suspect reportedly assumed the false identity of a soldier and visited a local chop bar after hiring a commercial motorbike rider (okada) for several hours. However, when it was time to pay, he asked the rider to take him back to his residence to fetch the money.

Upon reaching his destination, the fake military officer refused to settle the fare, using his fabricated identity to intimidate the rider. This led to a physical altercation between them.

Man beaten to a pulp for reportedly stealing man’s genitals at Senya Bereku

In Senya Bereku, Central Region, a man in his late 30s was brutally beaten by a group of motorcycle riders over an allegation of causing the disappearance of a colleague rider’s penis.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 10, around 22:00hrs at Zion C Basic School. Approximately 30 individuals armed with welding metals, stones, and sticks stormed the victim’s residence, identified as Mr. Isaac Saint.

They claimed that a ‘pragya‘ driver informed them that his penis vanished after he picked up the victim.

Eyewitnesses reported that the pragya driver alleged his penis disappeared shortly after dropping off the victim at home. Despite pleas for mercy, the victim was mercilessly beaten with metals, sticks, and stones, resulting in severe injuries and blood oozing from his nostrils, head, and other parts of his body.

The Senya Bereku police intervened and escorted the victim to Senya Polyclinic for a medical examination, which revealed that his penis was intact. The victim disclosed that he had visited a spiritual healer at Jehovah El Shaddhai 7th Day Sabbath Assembly, who prayed for him.

Following the examination, the police arrested the complainant and the spiritual healer, both of whom are in police custody. The victim is currently receiving treatment at the Winneba Specialist and Trauma Hospital.

At the church, some members claimed that the complainant had arrived with a shrunken penis and that the pastor’s prayers had restored it, asserting the innocence of the pastor.

Dr. Samuel Agyapong, Acting Medical Superintendent at Senya Polyclinic, emphasized the importance of verifying allegations through medical examination before resorting to violence.

He cautioned against blindly brutalizing individuals based on unverified claims.

  • Gov’t holds handing-over ceremony as GRA finally clears 14 containers carrying medications at Tema Port after 7 months

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has eventually cleared some 14 out of 182 containers at the Tema Port, holding antiretrovirals, Tuberculosis (TB) and malaria medicines that were donated by the Global Fund.

The Government of Ghana received 435 containers at the Tema Port between August 2023 and February 2024 containing anti-HIV, TB and malaria medicines and mosquito nets for distribution across the country.

The clearance comes after intense pressure was mounted on the Ministry of Health by stakeholders in the health sector and members of the general public over the delay in the release of the drugs.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) assured its stakeholders and the public that significant progress has been made in clearing the remaining containers holding antiretrovirals, Tuberculosis (TB) and malaria medicines by Friday, 12th April 2024.

The Health Ministry pledged that some 20 containers would be cleared on Friday, but only 14 containers were cleared. A handing-over ceremony was held to announce this latest development.

At the ceremony, Deputy Commissioner of the Customs Division of Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Emmanuel Ohene, revealed that a special provision of GHC40 million was made by the Ministry of Finance to cover transnational taxes, AU and ECOWAS levies on the containers.

What remained outstanding were third-party charges, which the donors, per reports, had decided to take up.

“Unfortunately, upon arrival of the consignment at the port, the associated charges could not be paid. This information was also not communicated to the Ministry of Finance on time,” Emmanuel Ohene said.

Earlier, the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Health raised concerns about the government’s ability to resolve the issue of delayed lifesaving drugs stuck at the port.

Executive Director of the Africa Center for Health Policy Research and Analysis, Dr. Thomas Anaba, has revealed that the delay in clearing medical supplies donated by the Global Fund has resulted in a significant increase in tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV/AIDS cases.

“There is an increase in the cases of tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS from last year’s figure, and the complications of people dying from AIDS have also increased. Women getting malaria during pregnancy have increased because of this.”

Gov’t to clear pharmaceutical products at Tema Port today – Report

The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Health has raised concerns about the government’s ability to resolve the issue of delayed lifesaving drugs stuck at the port by Friday, April 12.

The Ministry of Health has reported significant progress in clearing 182 of the 435 containers of antiretrovirals, TB, and malaria medicines at the Tema Port.

However, there are concerns about the remaining containers and the threat by the Global Fund to withhold supplies to Ghana if the delays are not resolved.

President of the Ghana HIV and AIDS Network, Ernest Ortsin, has expressed doubt that all the items will be cleared within the specified time frame. He shared these concerns in an interview with Citi News.

“We welcome the intervention from the Ministry of Health, except that this is not the first time they are making such a promise to us.

“The difference this time is that the new acting Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority has also stepped into the matter, and she has indicated that she is going to collaborate with the ministry to ensure that they claim the commodities.

“That is what is new about this new statement from the ministry. So, we are giving them the benefit of the doubt, hoping that by Friday, they will be able to claim all the commodities,” he said.

Ghanaian winger Joseph Paintsil has expressed his ambition to make history with Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy.

The 26-year-old recently joined the team on a long-term deal from Belgian club KRC Genk in a transfer worth €8 million.

Since his arrival, Paintsil has made seven appearances for LA Galaxy, scoring two goals.

“I’m not just coming just to enjoy the life of LA or California,” Paintsil told The Athletic.

“No, I came to also make a mark and also write my name in the book of the legacy, to have a trophy, to win a league. That’s the most important thing, to leave something so that when I also leave, like David Beckham, Ibrahimovic and the rest left behind, I can also be remembered like that,” he added.

Joseph Paintsil is set to return to action when LA Galaxy travels to play Vancouver at BC Place on Sunday.

NFL star Rashee Rice hands himself over to police over hit-and-run incident

NFL star Rashee Rice has surrendered to authorities following a warrant issued for his arrest in connection with a high-speed car crash last month in Dallas, Texas.

The crash, involving Mr. Rice’s Lamborghini and another vehicle, resulted in injuries to four people and a “chain reaction collision” that damaged four more vehicles.

Mr. Rice, 23, who plays as a wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs, stated earlier in April that he took “full responsibility” for the incident. He is now facing eight felony charges, including six counts of collision involving bodily injury, each carrying prison sentences of up to five years and fines of up to $5,000.

Additionally, Mr. Rice is charged with collision involving serious bodily injury, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and aggravated assault, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

After turning himself in, Mr. Rice was taken to a local jail with a bond totaling $40,000. Police confirmed his surrender and arrest, noting that both drivers involved in the crash had fled the scene.

In a statement posted to social media on 3 April, Mr Rice said he took “full responsibility for my part in this matter and will continue to co-operate” with authorities.

“I sincerely apologise to everyone impacted in [the] accident,” he said.

Dashcam footage from another motorist seems to capture the moment of the collision involving NFL star Rashee Rice.

The video depicts two vehicles speeding ahead of the motorist, subsequently losing control and colliding with several other cars, causing them to spin out of control on the motorway.

The driver of the second vehicle, 21-year-old Theodore Knox, is also the subject of an arrest warrant.

Mr. Rice, originally from the Dallas area, was drafted into the NFL in 2023 and played a role in the Kansas City Chiefs’ second consecutive Super Bowl victory in February.

  • Bawumia’s stance on LGBTQ activities came too late – Lecturer

Bawumia’s stance on LGBTQ activities came too late – Lecturer

A Political Marketing Strategist at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), Professor Kobby Mensah, has criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his delayed stance on the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

Prof. Mensah suggested that Dr. Bawumia should have expressed his position earlier when the topic was more prominent, stating that by the time the Vice President made his views known, the public discourse had shifted away from the bill, and people had moved on to other issues.

In an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show on Friday, April 12, Prof. Mensah characterized Dr. Bawumia’s intervention as belated and suggested that it may not have the intended impact due to the timing.

He noted that many Ghanaians are now focused on different matters, no longer considering the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill as a priority. Prof. Mensah added that some individuals have even criticized Dr. Bawumia for his silence on the issue, questioning the sincerity of his stance now that the conversation has evolved.

“Bawumia should have spoken about this issue long ago. He should have spoken when everybody’s mind was on this. Currently, his has been buried in the festivities and has been buried in the notion that of course, he has actually spoken about it as the issue is no longer at the front burner of the conversation,” he said.

Prof. Mensah expressed the view that Dr. Bawumia’s delayed response could potentially undermine his credibility on the matter, as it may be perceived as opportunistic or insincere.

“People have moved on. So his position has been buried and most people have the idea he hasn’t spoken about it. I wonder how many people will really get to know that he has spoken about it,” he said.

He noted that timely and proactive engagement with such controversial topics is essential for political leaders to effectively address public concerns and maintain trust among the electorate.

Professor Kobby Mensah’s remarks come in the wake of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer’s declaration on Thursday, April 11, during his address to thousands of Muslims in Kumasi as they observed Eid prayers. This marked Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s first public commentary on the contentious issue of LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana.

In his address, Dr. Bawumia left no room for ambiguity, firmly rejecting LGBTQ+ practices. He aligned his stance with his personal and religious beliefs rooted in Islam, as well as the social and cultural norms prevalent in Ghana.

“I will like to take this opportunity to personally comment on the raging issue of LGBTQ in Ghana. First of all, it is important to note that our cultural and societal norms and values as Ghanaians frown on the practice of homosexuality,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“Furthermore, as a Muslim, my view on this matter aligns with the position of my religious faith. The Holy Quran is replete with verses frowning on LGBTQ acts, including same-sex marriages. My faith is therefore very strictly against the practice of homosexuality, no “ifs” or “buts”. No shades of grey.”

“Therefore, I personally cannot support that which my religion, and indeed, all the major religions in Ghana clearly and unequivocably forbid. All the major religious traditions in Ghana (Christianity and Islam) are opposed to this practice and I stand opposed to it now and I will stand opposed to it as President, Insha Allah.”

  • Vietnamese real estate tycoon given death sentence over $12 billion fraud

Vietnamese real estate tycoon given death sentence over $12 billion fraud

A court in Vietnam has sentenced real estate tycoon Truong My Lan to death over her involvement in a 304 trillion dong ($12.5 billion) financial fraud case, the largest in the country’s history, state media reported on Thursday.

Lan, the chairwoman of real estate developer Van Thinh Phat Holdings Group, was found guilty of embezzlement, bribery, and violations of banking rules.

Her trial, which began on March 5, ended earlier than planned and was a dramatic outcome of Vietnam’s campaign against corruption, a pledge made by the leader of the ruling Communist Party, Nguyen Phu Trong, to eradicate.

“We will keep fighting to see what we can do,” a family member told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity, according to CNN reports. Before the verdict, the family member had said Lan would appeal against the sentence.

Lan had pleaded not guilty to the embezzlement and bribery charges, Nguyen Huy Thiep, one of Lan’s lawyers, told Reuters.

“Of course she will appeal the verdict,” he added, noting she was sentenced to death for the embezzlement charge and to 20 years each for the other two charges of bribery and violations of banking regulations.

Truong My Lan, along with her accomplices, was found guilty of embezzling over 304 trillion dong from Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank (SCB), which she effectively controlled through numerous proxies, despite regulations strictly limiting large shareholdings in lenders, according to investigators.

Between early 2018 and October 2022, when the state bailed out SCB following a run on its deposits triggered by Lan’s arrest, she allegedly misappropriated substantial sums by orchestrating unlawful loans to shell companies, investigators revealed.

Currently, the bank is being supported by the central bank and is undergoing a complex restructuring process to determine the legal status of hundreds of assets used as collateral for loans and bonds issued by Van Thinh Phat Holdings Group (VTP), of which Lan was the chairwoman. The total value of the bonds alone amounts to $1.2 billion. Many of these assets include high-end properties and unfinished projects.

Prior to her downfall, Lan had been a prominent figure in Vietnam’s financial sector, playing a significant role in the previous rescue of SCB over a decade ago, before her involvement in the bank’s subsequent crisis.

Lan was also found guilty of bribing officials to turn a blind eye, including paying $5.2 million to a senior central bank inspector, Do Thi Nhan, who received a life sentence.

Vietnam predominantly reserves the death penalty for violent crimes, but it also applies it to economic offenses. According to human rights groups, the country has executed numerous convicts in recent years, primarily through lethal injection.

In the case mentioned, 84 defendants received varying sentences, including probation for three years to life imprisonment. Among them were Truong My Lan’s husband, Eric Chu, a Hong Kong businessman, who was sentenced to nine years in prison, and her niece, who received a 17-year sentence.

Acknowledging Dr. Bawumia as the governing New Patriotic Party’s first-ever Muslim flagbearer, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the significance of this milestone.

“Fortunately, the Vice President, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, is the elected flagbearer of my party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), indeed, the first of the Muslim faith to occupy that important position, and is in pole position, by the grace and benediction of Almighty Allah, to take over from me on 7th January 2025, Insha Allah.”

He assured the National Chief Imam, Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, that he has no doubt Dr. Bawumia will continue to collaborate with him to advance the interests of the Muslim community.

Former Ejisu MP ‘abandons’ NPP to contest by-election as an Independent Candidate

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Ejisu, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, has announced his decision to contest the upcoming by-election as an independent candidate.

His decision comes as a result of what he perceives as the National Leadership of the NPP’s reluctance to address crucial concerns regarding the existing delegates’ album, which he believes undermines party integrity and fairness.

In a statement issued by his campaign aide, Nana Osei Bonsu, on Friday, April 12, 2024, it was revealed that Mr. Owusu Aduomi’s decision was largely influenced by the irregularities observed during the Ejisu polling station executive elections.

These irregularities, including the alleged arbitrary selection of individuals by the late MP of Ejisu, John Kumah, and the Regional Executives of the NPP, were deemed unacceptable in a democratic society.

“The genesis of this decision traces back to the tumultuous Ejisu polling station executive elections, marred by irregularities that would have been deemed unacceptable in any democratic society.

“Rather than adhering to the democratic process, the late MP of Ejisu, with the assistance of the Regional Executives of the NPP, arbitrarily handpicked individuals to fill key positions—a blatant disregard for the party’s constitution and its fundamental principles.

“Such actions have rightfully stirred vehement protests from conscientious party members and stakeholders across the nation. The issue has even found its way into the courts for adjudication, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the need for redress.

“Hon. Owusu-Aduomi’s decision to contest the by-election as an independent candidate underscores his unwavering commitment to upholding democratic values and ensuring transparency and accountability within the party. By refusing to participate in an ostensibly flawed process, he sends a clear message that integrity and fairness must prevail, even at the expense of personal political aspirations.”

COCOBOD slams Minerals Commission over MIGOP Mining Limited’s presence on cocoa farms

Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, Joseph Boahen Aidoo, has chastised the Minerals Commission over the lack of due diligence after issuing an exploration licence to MIGOP Mining Limited, a foreign-owned gold mining firm.

The company is accused of endangering the livelihoods of cocoa farmers in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality, Ashanti Region.

It has been revealed that approximately 400 acres of cocoa farms are under threat due to the exploration activities conducted by MIGOP Mining Limited.

Mr. Aidoo noted that although the Commission had granted an exploration license to the mining company, it failed to follow up to ensure that no mining took place.

“The Minerals Commission is also complicit in whatever that is going on. In this instance that we are discussing, they were issued with an exploration license and not a mining lease. It is only when you’ve gone through all the necessary processes and procedures, then you need the final stage to establish that you have a commercial precious mineral there that is only when you will be issued with a mining lease but in this instance, they only have exploration license from the minerals commission,” he stated.

“The minerals commission has not followed up to see whether they are doing exploration or mining and by law, they are not supposed to use heavy machinery through any cocoa farm. So, whatever is going on there is unlawful and COCOBOD is going to assist the farmers to have the get compensation for whatever disruption might have occurred to their farms,” he added.

Mr Aidoo asserts that the attempts by the mining company to explore and mine in the affected communities, resulting in the destruction of several cocoa farms, are unlawful and unacceptable.

“It is unlawful to destroy any cocoa tree or even to remove any tree on the cocoa farm. Which means that you can’t even go there and mine. Even if loggers cannot go and take timber trees, then it means that as for mining, it cannot come to any cocoa farm at all.

The potential commencement of full-scale operations by the firm could have detrimental effects on five cocoa-growing communities in the area.

The CEO assured that COCOBOD is dedicated to supporting the affected farmers and will help secure fair compensation for any disruptions caused to their farms.

In a firm stance, the CEO of COCOBOD declared the company’s actions as illegal, emphasizing the protection afforded to cocoa trees under the law.

“It is unlawful to destroy any cocoa tree or even to remove any tree on the cocoa farm. Which means that you can’t even go there and mine. Even if loggers cannot go and take timber trees, then it means that as for mining, it cannot come to any cocoa farm at all.

The late Mawuena’s tribute to Komla Dumor a decade after his death

On Thursday, April 11, 2024, Mawuena Adzo Trebarh, a prominent Ghanaian businesswoman and sister of the late BBC broadcaster Komla Dumor, passed away.

Her recent death has drawn attention to a series of social media posts she made on January 18 and 19, 2024, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of her late brother’s passing.

In these posts, which coincidentally were her last before her demise, Mawuena shared fond memories of her late brother and the pain of dealing with his loss.

On January 18, marking a decade since Komla’s passing, Mawuena recounted her early morning routine of driving her brother, who was employed with the Multimedia Group as host of the Joy FM morning show, to work. She described how her duties as an elder sister meant she had to drop him off and arrive at work very early, around 3 am, before her official reporting time.

In her final post on January 19, Mawuena expressed gratitude to the public for the outpouring of love on the 10th anniversary of Komla’s passing.

Read Mawuena’s full post on January 18, 2024, below:

One of my fondest memories of my brother Komla will always be our early morning drives from our family home in Kwabenya, Accra, Ghana to the studios of Joy 99.7FM. Those were the very early days of his career as a broadcast journalist.

Older sister duties dictated that when his car had to go for servicing and the rains were especially heavy, it would be my duty (with no democracy) to get him to the studio. We would set off at 2:00am for a 3am arrival in Kokomlemle, Accra.

“Komla why do we have to leave that early? I would ask? I can still hear his reply. “So I can sleep some more on the way!!
I remember fondly the comfortable but anxious silence, as I tried to escape getting stuck in the mud on the initial rough road to the main road. I remember our huge sighs of relief and laughter as we escaped the mud bath, arriving safely at the main road. I especially remember him jumping out of the car with purpose on arrival at JoyFM and the last word as he leaned forward, “Thanks Mawun. See you later!

I remember my feelings of satisfaction that I had done my “big sister good deed” for the day and then instantly annoyed wondering what on earth I was going to do at my office at 3am until official work hours started! Sleep some more I guess?

There are multiple fond memories I have of Komla especially on this 10th anniversary of his departure. Sometimes the anguish of how much I miss him can be a lot to bear but I remain encouraged by those memories.

I am thankful to GOD that today, I can be here to celebrate those memories with my family and the extraordinary numbers of people who knew him and loved him too. Rest Strong and Rest Free Komla. We don’t stop! Mawun

“When an evil person comes to you with news, verify it” – Akufo-Addo tells Ghanaians

President Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians to stay vigilant against the spread of fake news in the lead-up to the December elections.

Highlighting the dangers of fake news in inciting unrest during elections, the president emphasized the need to reject such misinformation to maintain national unity and peace.

Speaking at this year’s Eid celebrations at the Black Star Square in Accra, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of avoiding the endorsement or propagation of fake news, warning against its dissemination.

“We are in an election year and in election years, there is a tendency for self-seeking people to exploit our differences of religion and ethnicity to foment division to promote narrow and parochial sectarian and political agendas.

“In an age of information and new media, which also offers people a wide degree of anonymity, we should be careful about the spread of misinformation and disinformation, especially when such misinformation and disinformation destroy the hard-earned reputation of people.”

The president also encouraged Muslims to uphold and practice Quran 49:6.

It states, “Oh you who believe, when an evil person comes to you with news, verify it, lest you have people in ignorance and afterwards, becomes regretful of what you have done.”

Akufo-Addo is not against anti-LGBTQ bill; he will sign it when he receives it – Miracles Aboagye

Presidential staffer and spokesperson for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has expressed confidence that President Akufo-Addo will sign the controversial Sexual Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, also known as the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.

He emphasized that President Akufo-Addo has consistently opposed the activities of the LGBTQ community and has not shown any support for them.

During an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show on Friday, April 12, Mr. Aboagye reiterated his belief that President Akufo-Addo will give his assent to the bill once it reaches his table.

“The President has never said he will not sign the bill. So I believe that he will sign it when it gets to him,” he said.

He urged Ghanaians to be open to criticism of the bill, emphasizing that no law is perfect and constructive criticism is essential for refining legislation to better serve the country’s interests.

The spokesperson’s call for accepting criticism of the bill underscores the importance of engaging in constructive dialogue to address concerns and improve legislation. It also reflects the broader societal discourse surrounding LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana and the complexities involved in navigating cultural, religious, and legal considerations.

These remarks from Professor Kobby Mensah follow the recent declaration by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, who expressed his opposition to LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana during his address to thousands of Muslims in Kumasi on Thursday, April 11, as they observed Eid prayers. It marks Dr. Bawumia’s first public commentary on the contentious issue, and he did not hesitate to make his stance clear.

Dr. Bawumia firmly rejected LGBTQ+ practices, aligning his personal beliefs with the teachings of Islam, as well as the social and cultural norms prevalent in Ghana.

Addressing the gathered Muslim community, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his non-support for LGBTQ+ activities, aligning his stance with the broader religious and societal values upheld in Ghana.

“I will like to take this opportunity to personally comment on the raging issue of LGBTQ in Ghana. First of all, it is important to note that our cultural and societal norms and values as Ghanaians frown on the practice of homosexuality,” Dr. Bawumia said.

Domestic tourism moved from about 900,000 in 2022 to about 1.4 million in 2023, and international arrivals ended 2023 at 1.140 million, which compares favourably to the 2019 figure, which was the Year of Return.

“We have seen some resilience and growth, and we have seen that we are making some strides, but we cannot do it all alone, and we need the issue of the multiplicity of levies and taxes paid to various agencies to be addressed. So, we have presented a paper to the Ministry of Finance, and we are hoping that those taxes and levies will be addressed in the Mid-year Budget.”

Mr. Agyemang, touching on the theme, “Financial Empowerment for the Tourism and Hospitality Sector,” said a flat tax rate regime would be beneficial to the tourism sector if approved by the government.

Both entities, aiming to make tourism the top GDP earner in the country, advocate for a flat tax rate regime to maintain and enhance the gains made in the tourism sector over the years.

  • I am not “clearing agent” Akufo-Addo to meddle in corruption fight – Mahama

I am not “clearing agent” Akufo-Addo to meddle in corruption fight – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has declared that he will not shield his appointees involved in corrupt practices, as done by the current government leadership if elected president in the upcoming December polls.

Speaking to members of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Mr. Mahama urged Ghanaians to demand accountability from their leaders for the taxes they pay.

“If people have taken advantage of the country, they must be dealt with, and that is why I said when I come into the office and I am swearing in the ministers, I will caution them, and if they don’t listen and do not do their work well and EOCO or OSP come after you, I am not a clearing agent and I won’t interfere and I will let them do their work,” Mr Mahama said.

The NDC has tagged President Akufo-Addo as a clearing agent for failing to ensure his appointees accused of corrupt-related activities are probed. This name tag has however been dismissed by the president who says it is not his mandate to investigate or prosecute corrupt individuals.

Mahama also mentioned plans to establish an independent valuation office to prevent sole sourcing and procurement infractions if he wins the general elections.

“One of the reasons why you are suffering in terms of imposition of revenue and taxes is because of the expenditure side. If the government is raising the money and misusing it through sole sourcing, procurement and so forth, it is your taxpayers’ money that is being wasted and so we must take an interest in that and that is why I have suggested that we are going to have an independent valuation office and any sole sourcing contract must go for value-for-money audit to make sure that it has not been inflated.”

“Aside from that, we must make sure that we cut down on corruption and allow the anti-corruption institutions to work,” he said.

  • Don’t become agents of destruction this election year – Bawumia to youth

Don’t become agents of destruction this election year – Bawumia to youth

Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is urging the youth not to allow themselves to be used to perpetrate electoral violence.

This call comes ahead of Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for December 7, 2024.

In previous years, Ghana’s elections have been marred by violent clashes between opposing factions, often involving the younger generation. These clashes have led to deaths, property destruction, and have affected the country’s political stability.

Dr. Bawumia is urging Ghanaians to uphold peace and tolerance towards each other to promote unity in the diverse political landscape as the country prepares for the upcoming polls.

Speaking at Thursday’s Eid prayers in the Ashanti region, the Vice President emphasized the importance of embracing a violence-free election.

“As we enter the campaign season for the elections in December, let’s all be guided by acts that will preserve and uphold the diversity of our country and its unity.

“To the youth, you are the nation’s most valuable asset and under no circumstances should you be forced into any form of electoral violence. Ghana needs you safe, active and lively to lead the nation’s charge in the promising fourth industrial revolution.

“Let’s all say no to all forms of electoral violence,” he said.

Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun, has urged the Muslim community to embrace a sense of nationalism as emphasized in the Holy Qur’an.

“Prophet Mohammed emphasized his love for Mecca, but the people rejected him. Love your country and avoid anything that would cause violence,” he said.

After thirty days of fasting and devotion to Allah, the Muslim community in the Ashanti region celebrated the culmination of the holy month of Ramadan with prayers and festivities.

Muslims expressed gratitude to Allah for the strength and guidance they received during the fast, which fostered a sense of compassion and generosity among them.

Some members of the community also expressed gratitude for the New Year and urged fellow Muslims to continue living in holiness even after Ramadan.

“Let’s all live a pious life even after the Holy month of Ramadan. Let’s continue to abide by the tenets of Islam,” one of the celebrants said.

Let us make Bawumia Ghana’s first Muslim President – New Juaben South MP

Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, has encouraged the Muslim community to seize the opportunity to elect the first Muslim President in Ghana’s history.

Addressing the historical dominance of Christian presidents since independence, Okyere Baafi emphasized the importance of supporting Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for the presidency as the first Muslim president.

“In the history of Ghana, we have not had a Muslim president. The Vice President says he wants to set a record for you, so it is our responsibility. So this year’s election is not about NDC and NPP; it is about your own Muslim brother. So the Vice President says I should tell you he is your brother. Since the days of Kwame Nkrumah to President Nana Akufo Addo, all the presidents we have had were Christians. We have not had a Muslim leader, so this year elect him as a Muslim to be President to spearhead unity and development for Ghana to prosper.”

Okyere Baafi added, “We Christians accept that you Muslims have helped us elect Christian Presidents for a very long time, so it is now your turn to help yourself so that we join you in electing a Muslim leader.”

Amidst calls for peace ahead of the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, the MP emphasized the need for unity and peaceful participation in the democratic process.

The Eastern Regional Chief Imam, Alhaji Yusif Amudani, warned against the political exploitation of Muslim youth for violence. He stressed the utmost importance of maintaining peace during the electoral period.

It is sad Akufo-Addo’s Performance Tracker could not track corruption – Joyce Bawah

Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has criticized the Akufo-Addo-led government’s recently launched Performance Tracker, dismissing it as a misguided priority.

She argued that the tracker fails to address the widespread corruption within the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, which has had a detrimental impact on public finances.

Madam Bawah insisted that the tracker represents a squandering of limited state resources, as it does not offer transparency regarding the government’s lavish expenditures.

In a tweet on Thursday, April 11, the former Deputy Transport Minister highlighted that 80% of government projects and contracts are awarded through single-source procurement, alleging that the government practices nepotism by selecting individuals and companies for lucrative contracts.

She emphasized that Ghanaians had hoped for insights into government performance from the tracker, particularly concerning nepotism and questionable contracts.

“To my utter surprise and disappointment, the misleading GoG Performance Tracker failed to track the performance of Akufo Addo/Bawumia’s performance on corruption.”

“What a waste of precious resources! Tell us how you and your boys and girls have perfected the art of corruption.”

“We are told that 80% of government projects and contracts are single-sourced, and individuals and companies are handpicked by this nepotistic government and awarded juicy contracts,” she posted.

She further called on the government to prioritize policies aimed at improving the lives of struggling Ghanaians and to halt unnecessary expenditure of state funds.

“That is what this NPP government should be tracking down and paying back to the now miserably empty public purse,” she added.

Her remarks come after the government’s launch of the Performance Tracker at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in Accra on Wednesday, April 10. The platform aims to enhance transparency and accountability in the implementation of government infrastructure projects nationwide.

Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, unveiled the Performance Tracker, emphasizing its role in promoting transparency and accountability in infrastructure projects across the nation. He highlighted the tracker’s significance in addressing concerns about project accuracy and reliability, particularly in depicting project outcomes through artist’s impressions.

During the official launch at GIMPA, Nkrumah noted that the tracker currently contains data on over 13,000 projects nationwide. He also mentioned that the tracker builds upon the foundation laid by the Delivery Tracker introduced by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in 2020.

Transport fares yet to be revised, pay existing rate – GPRTU, GRTCC to commuters

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have jointly advised commuters not to pay any new transport fares that have not been officially approved.

This advice comes after the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana announced a 30% increase in transport fares, effective Saturday, April 13.

In a press release, the GPRTU and the GRTCC attributed the fare increase to the government’s failure to address pending grievances adequately. However, they reiterated that any fare increase outside the parameters set by the Administrative Instrument governing the review of public transport fares in the country is illegal and should be ignored by commuters.

The GPRTU and the GRTCC also highlighted ongoing efforts to engage with stakeholders and the Ministry of Transport to assess the various cost components involved and reach a mutually agreeable resolution.

They aim to ensure that any adjustments to transport fares comply with established regulatory frameworks and serve the best interests of both transport operators and commuters.

“We are by this statement, urging the Regional Administrations, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and the Station Welfare committees to ensure compliance to the existing fares as no such decision has been taken regarding any fare increment.

“We also want to urge all drivers to abide by this directive and have confidence in the leadership. We will continue to push for the welfare of transport operators.”

Paul Adom-Otchere shares analysis of how cross-examination of Serwaa Amihere in court could go

Host of Good Evening Ghana show on Metro TV, Paul Adom-Otchere, has waded into the conversation surrounding the leaked romantic video involving media personality, Serwaa Amihere and Businessman Henry Fitz.

In the latest episode of the show, Paul gave an illustration of a cross examination Serwaa Amihere might face by lawyers of Henry Fitz in court.

Henry Fitz, a former lover of media personality, Serwaa Amihere, together with two others, have been dragged to court by The Republic over the non-consensual sharing of an intimate image.

In a writ sighted by The Independent Ghana, Henry Fitz’s actions and those of Edem Saviour Ketti and Candylove Kwakyewaa Ababio are contrary to Section 23(1) of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (ACT29) and Section 67(1) (2) of Cybersecurity Act 2020 Act 1038.

But a police report reveals that the three individuals did demand an amount of GH¢20,000.00 to be sent within a minute, or else Serwaa’s nude videos would be posted.

On the 3rd of December 2023, Serwaa Amihere’s makeup artist, Colleen Nyin Affel-Som called to inform her that someone had texted her demanding an amount of GHC5,000.00 with the pretext that he had her nude pictures.

The said amount should be sent to the MTN mobile money account number →0558247205, which bears the name Edem Saviour Ketti.

Serwaa is said to have sent the money, yet still, the group went ahead and posted nude pictures of the media personality on social media handles.

According to Paul Adom-Otchere, one of the questions Serwaa may answer would be if she filed a complaint to the police when she was blackmailed.

He noted that if Serwaa had failed to file a complaint, she could be found complicit.

    Below is Paul Adom-Otchere’s analysis.

  • 100 hectares rehabilitated cocoa farm in Ashanti Region allegedly stolen by foreign mining firm

100 hectares rehabilitated cocoa farm in Ashanti Region allegedly stolen by foreign mining firm

A foreign-owned mining company, MIGOP Mining Limited, has reportedly taken over 100 hectares of rehabilitated cocoa farms at Nkawie in the Ashanti Region without authorization.

This action has denied farmers access to their farmlands.

The company is conducting mining exploration and development activities in five cocoa communities in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality. These farms were part of the newly rehabilitated cocoa fields following an epidemic of Cocoa Swollen Shot Virus Disease in the communities.

Head of COCOBOD’s anti-illegal mining units, Professor Michael Kwarteng, has expressed concern about the effects and dangers posed by the mining company’s operations on the local communities’ ability to produce cocoa.

“Yesterday, I received a call from the executive director of the cocoa health and extension division that there is this mining company, MIGOP Mining Limited.

“They’ve come to this our cocoa district. To them, they’ve been given license to do prospecting and they’ve destroyed a lot of our cocoa farms,” said Mr. Kwarteng.

He added, “Farmers have been preventing them but they are using security personnel to intimidate them and then going ahead with their activities. So when I received this I said no, I can’t sit down for even a day.”

“Looking at what is happening, the evidence is there. They’ve destroyed some of the cocoa farms. COCOBOD we are not aware of what is going on. I always say whenever you are securing any concession, you have to contact the regulator of that production, being cocoa, or whatever.

“Meanwhile when you go to the minerals commission, the Mining Acts 703 sections 18(1)(2), it tells you that mining companies are supposed to contact bodies that regulate that farm. So they are violating that aspect of their own law. So, mining companies are taking advantage of this and are destroying our farms everywhere,” he stated.

Meanwhile, several farmers interviewed by TV3’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent Ibrahim Abubakar lamented the detrimental effects the decision would have on their livelihoods and the country as a whole.

“The miners gave me cash in exchange for my cocoa farm but I didn’t allow it. We need your help,” a farmer said.

Another farmer remarked, “The miners claimed they have acquired a permit from the government. They will negotiate a price for your cocoa farm behind you,” adding that such an arrangement poses a “great challenge to our children and country.”

The mining operations will impact cocoa communities such as Apuoyem, Brahebebome, Brosanko, Ouagadougou, and Nkotonmire. According to Ghana’s COCOBOD, the monetary value of cocoa produced by these communities is over GH¢316,000.

  • Request to use 14 genetically modified seeds for cultivation has not been approved – NBA

Request to use 14 genetically modified seeds for cultivation has not been approved – NBA

The National Biosafety Authority (NBA) clarified that it has not approved the cultivation of seeds for 14 genetically modified (GM) products in Ghana.

Instead, the authority stated that it has registered these 14 GM products for importation into the country.

In a statement released by the CEO of the NBA, Eric Amaning Okoree, on April 10, 2024, it was emphasized that any entity seeking to import GM products into Ghana must obtain an import permit from the NBA.

He said the 14 approved GM products are also not for cultivation but “they are for the purposes of food, feed or processing.”

“They have been registered to allow for importation for those purposes by individuals or groups interested in them. Any entity interested will require an import permit from the NBA to be able to import them for use in the country. Therefore, the NBA wishes to state categorically that those events or products have not been imported into the country for food, feed or processing yet,” he explained.

The CEO of the NBA also clarified that the authority follows procedures outlined in the Biosafety Act, 2011 (Act 831), as well as international best practices when evaluating applications related to GM products.

That, he noted, the “Authority therefore wishes to assure Ghanaians of the safety of GM product(s) that have received the NBA’s approval; notably the Bt Cowpea submitted by SARI and the fourteen (14) events submitted by Bayer West-Central Africa S.A and Syngenta South Africa which are intended for food, feed or for processing.”

Mr. Okoree clarified that the 14 approved products, comprising eight maize and six soybean events, are not meant for cultivation.

“They are, rather, grains for direct use as food, feed or for processing as stated above. This approval was granted under Section 13 of the Biosafety Act, 2011 (Act 831) and Regulation 15 of the Biosafety (Management of Biotechnology) Regulations, 2019 (LI 2383) following the evaluation of data and information supplied by the applicant and a thorough risk assessment by the NBA Technical Advisory Committee (TAC),” he indicated.

He explained that having received the applications for registration, the Authority evaluated the events in line with available data provided by the applicants in line with the authority’s mandate and regulatory processes.

Mr Okoree expressed the concern that the call to reject any GM seeds that will be supplied is “unfortunate”, adding “The NBA recognises the need for Ghanaians to adapt to the emerging plant breeding technologies in the agricultural space for sustained crop improvement and food security.”

In addition, he said, “We wish to reiterate the fact that the improved yield and sustained food security will rather inure to the benefits of farmers rather than impoverish them as being speculated by a section of the media. Again, there is a robust biosafety system in place to ensure the safety of GMOs officially released in the country.”

Jokic also contributed 11 rebounds, seven assists, and three steals in the game on Wednesday night.

With this win, the Denver Nuggets reclaimed the top spot in the Western Conference, leading by one game with just two regular-season matches remaining. They are now favorites to secure the number one seed and home advantage for the playoffs.

The Minnesota Timberwolves, on the other hand, are now tied for second place in the West with the Oklahoma City Thunder, who dominated the San Antonio Spurs 127-89. The Spurs were without key players like Victor Wembanyama, Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and Jeremy Sochan due to injuries.

In other Western Conference action, Devin Booker scored 37 points to lead the Phoenix Suns to a 124-108 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

  • Quickly sign anti-witchcraft bill – CHRAJ tells Akufo-Addo

Quickly sign anti-witchcraft bill – CHRAJ tells Akufo-Addo

The Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has urged President Akufo-Addo to promptly sign the Anti-Witchcraft Bill, which was passed by Parliament about nine months ago.

CHRAJ emphasized that the bill, once enacted, would directly address witchcraft allegations and attacks in the country.

Mr. Joseph Whittal, the Commissioner for CHRAJ, made this appeal during a National Policy Dialogue on Access to Justice for Women Accused as Witches in Ghana, jointly organized by CHRAJ and Crossroads International.

He highlighted that the absence of a concrete law to penalize individuals involved in witchcraft allegations and attacks has perpetuated these harmful practices in certain regions of the country.

“The practice is still ongoing on the ground and the main instrument to cease or force the practice to come to an end is the deterrence of the Bill,” he stressed.

Mr. Whittal emphasized the need to abolish customs and traditions that violate the constitutional rights of individuals.

He mentioned that CHRAJ has been actively engaging with traditional leaders to prevent discrimination against vulnerable people and to ensure that their rights are not violated under the guise of tradition.

CHRAJ has also been working to engage with individuals who have been accused of witchcraft.

Mr. Whittal urged District Assemblies in areas where witch camps are located to take full responsibility for the welfare of the inmates.

On July 28, 2023, Ghana’s Parliament passed the Criminal Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2022.

The purpose of the bill is to amend the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Acts 29) to prohibit the practice of witch doctors or witch finders, and to outlaw the declaration, accusation, naming, or labeling of another person as a witch.

The Private Member’s Bill was sponsored by Mr. Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, along with other sponsors including Hajia Laadi Ayii Ayamba, NDC MP for Pusiga; Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw, NDC MP for Wa East; Madam Helen Adjoa Ntoso, NDC MP for Krachi West; and Madam Betty Nana Efua Krosbi Mensah, NDC MP for Afram Plains North.

Witch camps are settlements where women accused of witchcraft are kept for safety, often due to reasons such as mental health problems.

  • Akufo-Addo will one day be remembered as corrupt as Dr Congo’s Mobutu Sisoku – Economist

Akufo-Addo will one day be remembered as corrupt as Dr Congo’s Mobutu Sisoku – Economist

In a scathing critique of the Akufo-Addo administration, renowned financial analyst and historian Scott Bolshevik has likened President Akufo-Addo to the infamous Mobutu Sese Seko of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, citing alleged corruption and mismanagement of state-owned corporations.

Bolshevik’s criticism comes amidst concerns over the state of Ghana’s state-owned enterprises, particularly Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), and Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).

“Why are all the state owned corporations in Ghana collapsing.
TOR , to Ghana Cocoa Board, and now GNPC.

“In 21st century I have never seen a corrupt government like this in Africa.
One day Akufo Addo will be remembered as corrupt as Mobutu Sisoku of Dr Congo,” he wrote.

    https://twitter.com/scottbolshevik/status/1778090314449752095?s=46

TOR, once a cornerstone of Ghana’s energy sector, has been plagued by infrastructure decay, leading to reduced production capacity and increased maintenance costs. Financial challenges, including debt accumulation and inadequate funding, have further hampered its operations.

COCOBOD, according to the Minority in Parliament, is on the brink of collapse due to considerable indebtedness to banks. The 2024 budget anticipates a substantial loss of 2.6 billion Ghana cedis, raising fears of potential defaults on loan payments.

Meanwhile, GNPC faces an uncertain future as funding from the Petroleum Holding Fund (PHF) is set to cease after 2026, as mandated by the Petroleum Revenue Management Act (PRMA). PIAC has warned that without government support, GNPC may struggle to survive.

Mobutu Sese Seko, the former president of Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), was notorious for his corruption during his rule from 1965 to 1997.

He amassed a vast personal fortune through embezzlement of state funds, often using the country’s treasury as his personal account.

He used this wealth to maintain his grip on power, enriching himself and his associates while the country suffered from widespread poverty and underdevelopment.

Mobutu’s rule was characterized by a lack of accountability, with little regard for the rule of law or democratic principles. His regime was marked by nepotism, cronyism, and a culture of corruption that permeated all levels of government.
