A farming community named Manwe in the Wa East District has reportedly been taken over by armed military personnel.

The incident is said to have unfolded on Thursday January 25, 2024, at around 1 pm within the township. Witnesses observed that several motorbikes belonging to civilians were seized during the takeover, accompanied by warning shots to intimidate onlookers.

It is unknown the reason for their alleged presence.

Some residents of the area who spoke to the media said, “I saw three men within the community today, I saw them going into a room ordinarily dressed but came out later with military uniforms.

Next NDC govt will establish National Apprenticeship Program to check unemployment – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government plans to launch an extensive National Apprenticeship Program.

The program will specifically target job creation for young people while concurrently enhancing their skills.

According to Mahama, the initiative will be executed at the local assembly level, where support will be provided to artisans to engage and employ young individuals.

The NDC flagbearer, currently on the “Building Ghana We Want Tour” in the Ashanti Region, shared these plans during an address to the residents of New Edubiase.

In outlining measures to address youth unemployment, he emphasized the importance of the proposed National Apprenticeship Program in fostering skill development and job opportunities.

“For individuals outside the school system, our emphasis is on skill enhancement, enabling them to explore opportunities in hairdressing, seamstressing, and other artisanal crafts. The next NDC government aims to establish a National Apprenticeship Program, with District Assemblies leading the implementation. They will oversee the registration of artisanal business owners and attach the young people with them. Local Assemblies will allocate funding to mentors who will guide these young individuals,” Mr. Mahama said.

During his engagement with cocoa farmers in New Edubiase, Mr. Mahama indicated that the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will introduce initiatives aimed at fostering the growth of the cocoa sector.

The former President highlighted the party’s commitment to implementing measures and policies to support and enhance the cocoa industry, a vital component of Ghana’s economy.

“The next NDC government will continue previous initiatives to improve the cocoa sector. Additionally, we will provide factories in cocoa-growing areas to ensure we add value to the cocoa beans instead of exporting them in their raw form. This will go a long way to help cocoa farmers, and the factories will also help provide jobs to the youth in these areas,” he stated.

VIDEO: Yendi MP allegedly sharing branded TV sets to delegates ahead of NPP Primaries

Member of Parliament for Yendi, Farouk Aliu Mahama, has been accused of sharing branded 32-inch television sets to New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates ahead of the ruling party’s primaries slated for January 27, 2024.

In a video making rounds on X platform, a number of customised TV sets with Farouk Aliu Mahama’s image on them can be sighted.

They had been packed as if they were set for distribution. The Yendi MP is yet to comment on the claim making rounds.

Faruk Aliu Mahama has appealed to New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates in the constituency to uphold him as the parliamentary candidate. He made this request following the disbursement of funds for the payment of school fees for over a hundred students in his constituency.

The Yendi Constituency primaries of the ruling NPP have become the most fiercely contested constituency in the Northern region. Scheduled for January 27th, the political contest is between the incumbent Member of Parliament for Yendi, Alhaji Faruk Aliu Mahama, and Abibata Saani Mahama, the Chief Executive Officer of MASLOC.

Each candidate is providing delegates with numerous reasons why they should be chosen to represent the NPP in the constituency.

Stop the ‘dig and ship’, add value to your natural resources – Lands Minister charges African leaders

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, has underscored the importance of value addition to the successful and responsible harnessing of natural resources, urging African countries to follow the blueprint being implemented by the government of Ghana.

Delivering a speech at the ongoing African Prosperity Dialogue on Thursday, 25th January 2024, the Lands Minister gave prominence to the key role value addition can play in the economic fortunes of African countries and implored on the countries to begin the institute measures that will ensure that mineral resources are exploited effectively.

Touching on the theme of the Conference, “Delivering Prosperity in Africa: Produce, Add Value and Trade,” Mr Jinapor identified value addition and local participation as the two principles which are fundamental to the extraction of more Value Mineral resources and making the extractive sector the bedrock of economic turnaround.

He espoused that the pre-colonial practice of “digging and shipping” should make way for addition of value to the minerals as it enhances the revenue generation capacity of the country which will culminate into the transformation of the economy.

To encourage the other countries to chart the same path as Ghana, the Minister outlined some policy interventions made by the Ghana government which are already bearing fruits.

“We cannot transform our economies if we continue to dig and ship!!! That is why since assuming office in 2017, Ghana’s President Akufo-Addo has been working to ensure that we add value to our mineral resources. Today, for the first time in our country, Government has established, through a Public Private Partnership, a four hundred kilogramme (400kg) gold refinery to refine the gold we produce, and we are working to secure a London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) Certification”, he stated.

”The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) and the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC), which we established in 2018 and 2019, respectively, have been working to promote and develop integrated aluminium and iron and steel industries, from exploration, through refining, to downstream production. And work is far advanced for the commencement of the construction of a Four Hundred and Fifty Million US Dollars (US$450million) manganese refinery in Ghana,” he added.

On local participation, he said the importance of citizens benefiting directly from the resources in their countries cannot be overemphasized adding that government owe the citizens a duty to facilitate their participation in the exploitation of their resource.

He further disclosed that government is currently working on policy with Ghana Chamber of Mines that will compel large scale mining companies to list on the Ghana Stock Exchange which creates a platform for Ghanaian ownership of the companies through acquisition of shares.

“To derive optimal benefit from our natural resources, African peoples must participate, fully, across the entire value chain of the industry. Our peoples must have equity in the companies involved in the exploration, production, and processing of our mineral resources. It is for this reason that the Government of Ghana is working with the Ghana Chamber of Mines to ensure that large scale mining companies, operating in the country, list on the Ghana Stock Exchange, to enable Ghanaians acquire shares in these companies. We have, also, enacted the Minerals and Mining (Local Content and Local Participation) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2431), to promote local content in the mining industry”, he said.

“Pursuant to this law, we have increased the items on the Local Procurement List of goods and services reserved for Ghanaians from twenty-nine (29) to fifty (50), retaining, here in our country, some Three Billion US Dollars, (US$3,000,000,000.00), annually, which would have otherwise been exported.”

The maiden edition of the Africa Prosperity Dialogues series which kicked off today, Thursday January 25, 2024 will end on Saturday, January 28, 2024.

The dialogue series which is an initiative of the Africa Prosperity Network (APN) seeks to bring Africa’s political and business leaders together in conference with other thought leaders on Africa. Not only will they brainstorm on the all-important single-market project for the continent, but the dialogues will also create an annual platform for the continent’s leaders to spearhead collaborative implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.

Former KUMACA students donate 1,000 desks and 60 bunk beds to alma mater

Past students of the Kumasi Academy Senior High School (Akunni Global) have donated 1,000 mono desks and 60 bunk beds to their alma mater.

This benevolent gesture was prompted by a recent request from the school authorities to the association for additional bunk beds.

He explained, “As Akunni, we were able to organize and procure 60 beds, which can accommodate 150 ladies.” Boakye emphasized that beyond the physical furniture, the donation represented a foundation for hope, a sail for growth, and a tangible investment in the future.

Expressing gratitude to all those who contributed to the initiative, Boakye encouraged fellow alumni to continue working hand in hand to further enhance their alma mater.

He highlighted that the noble initiative not only signified their commitment to education but also emphasized the transformative power of collaboration and support for their school.

The headmaster of the school, Samuel Kwame Gato, expressed joy and excitement over this timely intervention.

Describing the donation as unprecedented, he acknowledged Akunni Global as critical and relevant stakeholders whose contributions to the school’s development agenda remained indispensable.

On behalf of the Board of Governors and the entire Kumasi Academy community, the headmaster conveyed profound gratitude and appreciation to Akunni Global for their generous donation.

During a brief ceremony held to hand over the furniture, the President of Akunni Global, Harry Boakye, expressed the alumni’s sense of fulfillment in meeting a critical need at a school they hold in high esteem.

Boakye mentioned that the decision to make this contribution was influenced by the school authorities’ revelation that some newly enrolled female students lacked beds to sleep on.

“I stand before you all with immense gratitude and a sense of fulfillment as we together present and hand over 1,000 mono desks and 60 3in1 bunk beds,” he stated.

A man from Banda-Nkwanta, a small town located at the intersection of the Bui Dam road and the Wa-Techiman highway, found himself stranded in Kejetia after falling victim to a scam.

According to the man, upon arriving at Kejetia, he encountered an individual who asked for assistance in locating a place to sell purported gold. Displaying kindness, he willingly offered his help.

During their interaction, the stranger persuaded him to lend money. Initially, the victim provided 500 cedis in cash and sent the remaining 700 cedis from his mobile money wallet. Additionally, the man convinced him to include his phone in the deal, promising a more powerful replacement.

Subsequently, the stranger wrapped what he claimed to be the new phone and the gold, instructing the victim not to open the package in the current location due to safety concerns.

However, upon reaching a safer place, the victim discovered that the package contained only a phone cover and several cracked screen protectors, with no gold as promised.

VIDEO: Moment roof collapsed on fire fighters dousing flame at West Legon

Officers of the Ghana National Fire Service faced a tough time while attempting to douse a fire outbreak at a residence in West Legon, near the Westland Junction.

The fire incident occurred on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, around 2 pm, and spread quickly to the roof of the building, which was made of wood and metal sheets. Thick smoke was seen billowing from the building, attracting the attention of passers-by and residents.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) was alerted and dispatched a team of firefighters from the Legon Fire Station to the scene. However, as they entered the building to douse the flames, the roof suddenly caved in and fell on a number of them, trapping them under the debris.

Video: Bare-chested Appiah Stadium carries Mahama’s bust during Kumasi walk

The streets of Kumasi, traditionally considered a stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), witnessed a massive turnout of people, predominantly NDC supporters, during the former President, John Dramani Mahama’s ‘24-hour Economy Sensitisation Walk.

The event, held on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, aimed to promote the NDC’s primary policy proposal for the 2024 elections: the establishment of a 24-hour economy in Ghana.

Noteworthy personalities, not typically associated with active party politics, were also spotted at the event, including the retired Commissioner of Police, Kofi Boakye.

Among the incidents that took centre was the carrying of a bust sculptured in Mahama’s frame. This bust was carried by one Appiah Stadium, who died so while bare-chested.

In his delivery, former President John Dramani Mahama outlined the 24-hour economy proposal, emphasizing that the next NDC government intends to implement measures to encourage businesses in Ghana to operate around the clock.

The policy initiative involves providing incentives for businesses to function day and night, potentially in three shifts, ultimately generating more employment opportunities for the youth.

  • Ablakwa’s bitter message to Black Stars after another painful exit from AFCON tournament

Ablakwa’s bitter message to Black Stars after another painful exit from AFCON tournament

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has issued a stern warning to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Black Stars following the team’s continued disappointing performance at the African Cup of Nations.

Once again, Ghana failed to progress from the group stages, this time falling short against Mozambique.

The Black Stars exited Group B with a mere 2 points, having lost to Cape Verde, drawn with Egypt, and ultimately failing to secure a victory against Mozambique. Two years ago, Ghana exited AFCON after losing to Comoros.

Expressing his discontent in a Facebook post on Wednesday, the frustrated North Tongu legislator highlighted the significant amount of money spent by the government to support the team, emphasizing the need for accountability for such a dismal performance.

Below is his message to the senior national team.

I hope Ghanaian footballers called to play for the Black Stars recognize that apart from the pride and high honour in representing our nation, taxpayers are making extraordinary sacrifices on the team despite the prevailing economic crisis.

The huge financial burden on struggling taxpayers must warrant some respect and utmost commitment from these players.

Documents submitted to Parliament by Ghana’s Youth and Sports Ministry a few weeks ago have shed light on a number of these Black Stars expenditure items:

    1) 2024 AFCON Qualifier (Ghana V Angola — Home & Away) — GHS7,452,437.71

    2) 2024 AFCON Qualifier (Ghana V Madagascar — Home & Away) — GHS8,395,434.13

    3) 2024 AFCON Qualifier (Ghana V Central Africa Republic — Home & Away) — GHS3,414,894.51

    4) April to June 2023 salaries of the coach & signing on fees — GHS3,379,548.10

    5) The official ministerial documents also reveal that it cost taxpayers a significant GHS5,324,721.89 to airlift supporters of the Black Stars during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

These 5 items alone amount to a colossal GHS27,967,036.34

Note that this GHS27.9million spent on Black Stars related activities during a period of historic economic crisis does not include latest tournament expenditure items in Côte d’Ivoire (I shall highlight that later).

For a country undergoing unprecedented financial haircuts which does not spare even the aged, and for a country unable to raise GHS4million to save lives at Korle-Bu’s renal unit — players of our senior national team and GFA officials must acknowledge that there are so many national problems we can solve with GHS27.9million and that we do not deserve this calamitous output.

We spend millions of cedis on you, this “calamitous output” cannot repeat itself – Ablakwa warns Sports Ministry, Black Stars

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has sounded a word of caution to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Black Stars over the latter’s continuous disappointing performance at the African Cup of Nations.

Ghana failed to advance from the group stages once again after failing to beat Mozambique this time around.

Ghana exited Group B with just 2 points after losing to Cape Verde, drawing with Egypt and subsequently Mozambique.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the peeved North Tongu legislator reminded the Black Stars team and the Sports Ministry how much was spent by the government for them to provide this appalling performance.

“I hope Ghanaian footballers called to play for the Black Stars recognize that apart from the pride and high honour in representing our nation, taxpayers are making extraordinary sacrifices on the team despite the prevailing economic crisis. The huge financial burden on struggling taxpayers must warrant some respect and utmost commitment from these players,” he wrote.

“Note that this GHS27.9million spent on Black Stars related activities during a period of historic economic crisis does not include latest tournament expenditure items in Côte d’Ivoire (I shall highlight that later),” he said.

He stressed that work must be done to overturn this calamity by the Black Stars to ensure that the money spent on them will benefit the country.

“For a country undergoing unprecedented financial haircuts which does not spare even the aged, and for a country unable to raise GHS4million to save lives at Korle-Bu’s renal unit — players of our senior national team and GFA officials must acknowledge that there are so many national problems we can solve with GHS27.9million and that we do not deserve this calamitous output,” he wrote.

  • Take a listen to Ghana’s National Anthem under Kwame Nkrumah before it was changed

A video said to contain the original Ghana National Anthem during the Nkrumah administration has surfaced on social media.

The video shared by X user, @KyeiMeshack, features an aged man who claims the national anthem currently being sung has been altered following Nkrumah’s overthrow in 1996.

“Then when Nkrumah was overthrown, they changed to God bless our homeland, Ghana. Ghana had a national anthem under Nkrumah but it has changed now. We changed it. Why did we change it,” he said.

According to him, the actual anthem sang:

“Lift high the flag of Ghana.

The day starts shining in the sky

Bright with the souls of our fathers for whose lives we live and die

Red, for the blood of the heroes in the fight.

Green for the fruitful forms of our birthright

And linked with this is the shining gold band, which marks the richness of our fatherland.”

Currently, the Ghana National Anthem sings:

    God bless our homeland Ghana,
And make our nation great and strong,
    Bold to defend for ever,
The cause of Freedom and of Right.
Fill our hearts with true humility
    Make us cherish fearless honesty,
And help us to resist oppressor’s rule
With all our will and might for evermore.

The Ghana National Anthem was composed by Philip Gbeho when Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule.

  • GRA/SML contract: Extending KPMG’s audit period will cost the govt more – Prof. Samuel Antwi

GRA/SML contract: Extending KPMG’s audit period will cost the govt more – Prof. Samuel Antwi

Dean of Graduate Students at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. Samuel Antwi, has pointed out that the extension of KPMG’s work tenure may result in the government having to pay additional fees for their services.

KPMG is tasked with auditing the revenue assurance contract between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML-Ghana).

President Akufo-Addo ordered an audit into the contract between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) due to concerns and revelations about the company’s performance and the accuracy of its claims.

The audit, initially scheduled to conclude on January 16, 2024, has been extended to February 23, 2024, following a request from KPMG, which has been approved by the president.

Prof. Antwi emphasized that despite being a request from KPMG, the extension would still incur additional costs for the government as the client.

“We’re going to pay for it because as I explained for every additional time except ‘give me some few days to put up my report’ an assignment that you were given two weeks to do, if you’re given six additional weeks, it means that there is some additional works you intend to do for which the client should pay.

“You can’t tell me that a job you have spent two weeks to do, you need six weeks to write a report. So we really need to interrogate why KPMG is asking for an additional six weeks.

“It means that in evaluating the work, the pre-audit arrangement, they made some mistakes in estimating the time they needed to complete the work. And once they realised that they needed an additional six weeks to complete the work, the client would have to pay more money.”

According to him, the turn of events is rather strange and KPMG may have to explain why they could not finish within the initial two weeks.

“They should come and tell us what is the issue that they’re unable to finish in two weeks, they need to finish in eight weeks,” he said.

Faulty refrigerator caused Bantama fire incident that destroyed several wooden structures – GNFS

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has identified the cause of the fire incident that destroyed wooden structures and their contents at Bantama, near the Methodist Church in Kumasi.

According to the GNFS, a faulty refrigerator plug in one of the affected wooden structures used as a drinking bar sparked the devastating blaze per preliminary investigation.

“Investigators are busy at the fire scene to determine the exact cause of fire,” the Fire Service, however, noted.

On Wednesday morning, fire ravaged 8 wooden structures despite efforts from firefighters from the Komfo Anokye, Metro and Manhyia Fire Stations, who ensured all surrounding sandcrete domestic buildings and their contents were protected from the fire ruins.

  • Talks on returning Ashanti Kingdom’s regalia began long ago – Asantehene’s advisor

Talks on returning Ashanti Kingdom’s regalia began long ago – Asantehene’s advisor

Pominent Ghanaian historian and advisor to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Dr. Ivor Agyemang-Duah, has provided insights into successful negotiations with the British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum for the return of Asante regalia to the Manhyia Palace in Ghana.

In a groundbreaking cultural collaboration, the Manhyia Palace Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and the British Museum have disclosed plans for the display of gold and silver regalia linked to the Asante royal court at the Palace Museum in Kumasi.

This display is part of a significant long-term loan commitment by the V&A and the British Museum.

The announcement marks a historic moment as many of these regal items, unseen in Ghana for over 150 years, will return to their roots. Dr. Ivor Agyemang-Duah detailed the negotiations, revealing that talks unfolded during the Asantehene’s visit to London in 2023.

In an interview on Citi Breakfast Show, Dr. Agyemang-Duah highlighted the concerns raised by past Asante rulers regarding the regalia held by the British Museum.

“This issue of bringing back these items [artefacts] has been on the drawing board for over half a century. And it’s not just an immediate concern. It has been a concern of about three or four past Asantehenes. But this year is critical in the sense that it must be the 150 years of the war, 100 years since the return of Agyemang Prempeh from exile in Seychelles and 25 years of the current Asantehene Osei Tutu II on the stool.

He added, “While in London in May 2023, having official discussions with directors of these museums, he [Asantehene] reopened negotiations and asked two of us [myself and British professor of African and Asante history, Malcolm McLeod], to help in the technical decisions that will be reached. We have been working on it for the last nine months and that brings us where we are today.”

Dr. Ivor Agyemang-Duah indicated that the artefacts would be sorted to identify those that were looted, specifying that the ones from the Victoria & Albert Museum were stolen.

When questioned about the decision to loan stolen regalia to the Manhyia Palace, he emphasized the importance of the strict laws governing the two museums.

“The historical antecedents of that bring itself to the question you asked, the moral rights. But there is also the other side to deal with, the laws of antiquity in the UK. These are national museums governed by very strict laws. And these laws do not permit them to give back permanently objects that were looted, stolen or whatever. And so that has also been the constraining factor in all those discussions that have on over the last 50 years,” he said.

  • Reduce policy rate to help struggling businesses boost production – BoG told

Reduce policy rate to help struggling businesses boost production – BoG told

The Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI) is advocating for a reduction in the policy rate to support business growth.

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) is currently meeting to review developments in the Ghanaian economy, and an announcement on the policy rate is expected by Monday, January 29, 2024.

In a statement, the GNCCI highlighted that Ghanaian businesses are grappling with a significant increase in borrowing costs, mainly due to the high Monetary Policy rate.

It emphasized that the elevated interest on commercial loans, averaging 32.0% in 2023, compounds the already high utility tariffs and excessive taxes, making the cost of doing business in Ghana exceptionally high.

“The costly business environment has contributed to a significant decline in production, the collapse of many businesses; the rise in non-performing loans; the relocation of businesses to other African countries, and as a whole led to the significant decline in the growth of the private sector and the economy. From a GDP [Gross Domestic Product] growth rate of 6.1% in the 4th quarter of 2021 to 2.0% in the 3rd quarter of 2023”, it mentioned.

“As the representative body of the business community in the Country, the GNCCI is very mindful of issues that specifically impact the operational costs of businesses. With the 116th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting ongoing to discuss the policy rate adjustments, the GNCCI emphasizes the need for the review to favor the growth of businesses. The GNCCI urges the MPC to take into account the cost-push impact of a high policy rate”, it added.

Considering the relative stability in the forex market and the substantial decline of 30.4% in domestic inflation from 53.6% in January 2023 to 23.2%, implying that the Real Interest Rate in Ghana is now positive, the GNCCI proposed that the Bank of Ghana lowers the existing policy rate.

“We believe the reduction will induce commercial banks to also lower their lending rate to enable businesses to access funds for expansion in the short to medium term,” the Chamber added.

“As Ghanaian businesses endeavor to actively engage in the AfCFTA, the cost of borrowing will play a crucial role in defining their competitiveness. With Ghana’s interest rate being the highest in Africa, we urge the Monetary Policy Committee to lower the policy rate. In the chamber’s estimation, anchored on the stability in the forex market, decline in inflation and the projected GDP growth rate of 2.7%, we propose a reduction of not less than 2 percent or 200 basis points in the policy rate for the start”, it continued.

The GNCCI concluded that it will continue to engage stakeholders in the public and private sectors to ensure a thriving business environment that delivers shared growth and prosperity for all.

Ghanaian man and son charged with defrauding hundreds of immigrants in US

A Ghanaian lawyer, Kofi Amankwaa, based in the United States, along with his son, Kofi Amankwaa Jr., has been arrested and charged with orchestrating a seven-year immigration scheme that defrauded hundreds of immigrants, leading to some being deported.

The allegations involve advising clients to submit fraudulent petitions under the Violence Against Women Act, falsely claiming abuse by their American citizen children to facilitate green card applications.

The applications were often found to be fraudulent, resulting in denials and deportations.

The charges against the Amankwaas include conspiracy to defraud the United States and immigration fraud, each carrying maximum sentences of five and ten years, respectively. The New York attorney general, Letitia James, has filed a lawsuit seeking restitution and damages against the accused.

Kofi Amankwaa had been licensed to practice law in New York since 1996, but his license was suspended in November after complaints were received about misconduct. The younger Mr. Amankwaa provided legal advice to clients even though he was not licensed to practice law in New York.

One client, Ricardo Velazquez, was advised by Mr. Amankwaa to leave the country and re-enter to continue his green card application, claiming abuse by his son.

However, Mr. Velazquez was detained and eventually deported when he tried to return from Mexico.

These decisions follow a series of private hearings on the matter. For several months, the Special Prosecutor has held Cecilia Dapaah’s funds, seized during a search of her residence as part of an ongoing investigation.

The office had also imposed freezes on certain bank accounts linked to Cecilia Dapaah, citing allegations of corruption and corruption-related activities.

Asene Manso Akroso Queen Mother, aspirant arrested after criticising change in venue for NPP Primaries

Tension has risen in the Asene Manso Akroso Constituency of the Eastern Region as a result of the arrest of the Adontenhemaa of Akyem Akroso, Nana Afia Henewaa, and Solomon Obeng Asante, the campaign manager of parliamentary aspirant Alex Owusu Adjei for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) upcoming primaries.

The arrests occurred after the two expressed dissatisfaction over the change of venue for the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary primaries.

The main challenger, Alex Owusu Adjei, has accused the police commander and the incumbent MP, George Kwame Aboagye, of being behind the change of venue.

The arrests have fueled tension among residents and delegates, leading to threats of supporting Adjei as an independent candidate in the general elections if he loses the primaries.

Supporters of the NPP in the constituency are also considering allowing Adjei to contest independently if the party leadership does not reconsider the change in venue.

They argue that the new venue, Akim Batabi, is a ploy to favor the incumbent MP and that the previous location at Akroso Presby school has been used peacefully in past elections.

The supporters have taken to the streets to register their displeasure over the venue change, emphasizing their willingness to support Adjei as an independent candidate if the decision is not reversed.

“We have seen on the platform that the venue has changed to Batabi. Our problem is that the venue is close to the MP’s house. We believe that the MP has an interest, which is why the venue has changed. We don’t want intimidation; it is becoming too much. The executives have been campaigning for the incumbent. We cannot go there to cast our votes; we will let Alex Owusu Agyei contest as an independent candidate,” they warned.

List of coaches no longer with their jobs after poor show at 2023 AFCON

The group stage matches of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) concluded on Wednesday night with Morocco defeating Zambia and Tanzania holding DR Congo to a draw.

Morocco’s victory brought positive news for hosts Ivory Coast as they qualified as one of the four best losers.

However, for some coaches, the tournament has been challenging, leading to their dismissal or resignation.

Here are five coaches who have resigned or been sacked so far.

    • Chris Hughton

The Ghana Football Association showed Irish trainer Chris Hughton the exit on Tuesday night, shortly after the official confirmation of the Black Stars’ elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations.

Hughton had led Ghana to the tournament in Ivory Coast but managed to secure only two points out of a possible nine in the group stage.

    • Jean-Louis Gasset

Despite Ivory Coast securing a spot in the next round of the competition, head coach Jean-Louis Gasset has also been relieved of his duties.

The Frenchman guided the Elephants to just one win from three games in the group stage. They experienced consecutive defeats against Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea, resulting in a third-place finish in the group.

    • Tom Saintfiet

After Gambia’s inability to qualify from their group in this year’s AFCON, Tom Saintfiet announced his resignation during the press conference at the end of the game against Cameroon.

The Scorpions lost all of their group games and were unable to secure a point this year, contrasting their progress from the first round two years ago.

    • Djamel Belmadi

After five years in charge of the national team, Djamel Belmadi resigned from his role as the head coach of the Algeria national team.

This decision came after the team’s elimination in the group stage for the second consecutive time since winning the trophy in 2019.

An agreement was reached with the Algerian Football Association for Belmadi to step down from his position following the latest setback.

    • Jalel Kadri

With Tunisia also failing to advance past the group stage, Jalel Kadri stepped down from his role as the head coach of the Carthage Eagles on Wednesday.

The North African side finished at the bottom of their group, securing only two points from their three games played.

Arriving in Spain on the same day, Williams started the game on the bench but came in as a substitute in the 59th minute, replacing Adu Ares.

His notable contributions included scoring a goal in the 105th minute of extra time and providing an assist to his younger brother, Nico Williams.

Cecilia Dapaah to receive her frozen accounts from OSP within 72 hours

An Accra High Court has directed the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to return Cecilia Dapaah’s confiscated funds to her within 72 hours.

The court’s decision came after the OSP submitted an application to validate the freezing and seizure orders related to the former Minister’s bank accounts and assets at her residence.

In a press briefing, the Special Prosecutor announced that the ongoing case will be taken over and pursued by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

“A little over an hour ago, the Office discontinued its application that was pending before the High Court for confirmation of the seizure and freezing orders in pursuance of the referral of the case to EOCO. The court order that the office should return the cash sums and defreeze the accounts of an investment of Mrs. Dapaah within 72 hours,” Kissi Agyebeng said.

Mr. Agyebeng clarified that his investigation thus far indicates a potential case of money laundering.

On that score, EOCO is better placed to handle affairs with respect to “suspected cases of money laundering and its attendant activity of structuring.”

In October 2023, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) partnered with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in a coordinated effort to thoroughly investigate former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffour. This joint initiative aimed to scrutinize the legality of the wealth accumulated by Ms. Dapaah and her associates, spanning across both Ghana and the United States.

During a statement on Thursday, January 25, 2024, the Special Prosecutor affirmed that his office would maintain a close working relationship with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and continue its collaboration with the FBI regarding the ongoing investigation.

    Background

Two house helps who were employed by Cecilia Abena Dapaah and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffour, are facing charges for allegedly stealing money and items worth millions of cedis from the couple’s residence in Abelemkpe, Accra.

The primary accused individuals, 18-year-old Patience Botwe and 30-year-old Sarah Agyei, have been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and five counts of stealing. The alleged thefts occurred between July and October 2022.

During this period, the house helps allegedly stole personal belongings of Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah, including assorted clothes valued at GH¢95,000, handbags, perfumes, and jewelry worth US$95,000. Ms. Botwe is also accused of stealing six pieces of Kente cloth worth GH¢90,000 and six sets of men’s suits valued at US$3,000, which belong to the minister’s husband.

Additionally, three other individuals, identified as Ms. Botwe’s current and former boyfriends and her father, are facing charges for allegedly being involved in the crime. They have been respectively charged with dishonestly receiving GH¢1 million, GH¢180,000, and GH¢50,000.

The stolen items and money were reported to the police in June 2023, leading to the arrest of Ms. Botwe, who was caught entering the couple’s room with a duplicate key. Further investigations revealed that Patience, with the help of her alleged accomplice Sarah, had hidden the stolen money and used it to purchase properties and expensive items.

The accused individuals were arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court on July 20, 2023, and while bail was granted to Sarah Agyei, Patience Botwe, along with her alleged boyfriends and father, were remanded into lawful custody.

The Special Prosecutor announced an investigation into the matter, starting with the arrest of Madam Cecilia Dapaah.

Image of Chairman Wontumi in hospital pops up on social media

New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been spotted in a health facility in a photo making rounds on social media.

In the image, Chairman Wontumi is seen lying on a bed with an intravenous (IV) catheter inserted into one of his hands.

This photo comes after New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong (JFK), revealed to the Kumasi Traditional Council that the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi is unwell and currently on admission at a health facility.

JFK, who appeared before the chiefs and elders of the Ashanti Kingdom on Monday, disclosed this while reporting to the council about the whereabouts of Chairman Wontumi who has been summoned for allegedly making derogatory remarks against the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The General Secretary of the party however confessed that he had no doctor’s report to prove that Wontumi, was indeed sick.

JFK said that Chairman Wontumi called him on Sunday and claimed that he was at the hospital, on admission and that he was not well.

However, when JFK asked him to provide a doctor’s report, so that he could present it to the chiefs, Chairman Wontumi failed to do so.

The remarks have sparked outrage among the chiefs and the youth of the Ashanti Kingdom, who have demanded an apology from Chairman Wontumi and threatened to exile him from the Ashanti land if he did not apologise to the Asantehene and the golden stool.

Some elders in the council have also asked that the NPP suspends all its activities in Kumasi until Chairman Wontumi appears before the Council and clears the air.

Akufo-Addo refuses GRA’s request for SML to continue monitoring system amidst KPMG audit

President Akufo-Addo has rejected the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) request to allow the continuous operation of SML’s monitoring system during the ongoing audit conducted by KPMG.

The President has specified that the suspension should persist until KPMG completes its audit and submits the findings for review.

This decision was communicated by Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications at the Office of the President, through a press statement issued on Wednesday, January 24.

“The President has denied GRA’s request and has directed that the status quo, with respect to the suspension of the performance of the contract, should remain in effect until the completion of the audit and, subsequent, submission of the audit report by KPMG,” an excerpt of the release said.

Initially set for completion by Tuesday, January 16, 2024, the new deadline for KPMG’s work is now Friday, February 23, 2024.

This extension follows a request from KPMG to the President, seeking additional time beyond the initial two-week period provided for the task.

“KPMG is to submit its final report no later than Friday, 23rd February 2024,” the statement added.

In a December 2023 investigative report, The Fourth Estate implicated Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML), the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and the Ministry of Finance in a contentious contract.

The report alleged that GRA had granted SML a purported 10-year contract with an annual payment of $100 million, raising concerns about possible irregularities. SML refuted this claim, asserting that it had a five-year contract instead.

The GRA, in a statement on December 20, 2023, maintained that proper procurement procedures were followed. On January 3, 2024, SML welcomed President Akufo-Addo’s directive to suspend its ongoing revenue assurance operations and undergo an audit of its contract with the GRA and the Ministry of Finance.

President Akufo-Addo appointed KPMG, an audit, tax, and advisory services firm, to conduct an immediate audit.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has initiated an investigation into the controversial contract between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

The focus of the probe is on potential breaches of procurement processes and allegations of corruption and corruption-related activities.

“My utterances were extreme” – Maurice Ampaw apologises to Ashanti chiefs after being summoned

Lawyer Maurice Ampaw has issued an apology to the chiefs of the Ashanti region in response to a summon for him to appear before them on Monday, January 29, 2024, at the Manhyia Palace.

This move comes after his previous on-air comments were perceived as derogatory towards certain chiefs in the Ashanti Region.

“We are going to talk law, and no one is above the law. I will honour the invitation; you will clap for lawyer Ampaw on Monday. I am going with the truth. Otumfuo supports the truth, and I am going to lay bare the facts,” he said in an earlier interview with Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin on GhanAkoma.

Now, in an interview on Asempa FM on January 24, 2024, Maurice Ampaw retracted his earlier statement and extended an apology to the Kumasi Traditional Council, urging them to forgive him for his remarks.

“I am using this platform to tell Nananom (chiefs) that if my utterances were extreme and they see it very offensive, I retract and apologize.

“I believe that let Asanteman move on, there is so much to do in the Ashanti Region and there is so much at stake in this political area and my love for Bawumia and NPP still stands.

“It is my prayer that we all support Chairman Wontumi to bring victory to the party and also support Otumfuo to bring development to the Ashanti Region and Ghana as a whole,” he said.

The General Secretary of the ruling NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua, had previously presented himself before the chiefs at the Manhyia Palace to address alleged inappropriate comments made by Chairman Wontumi during a vetting process.

In contrast, Maurice Ampaw had asserted that “some chiefs in the Ashanti Region are corrupt.” Despite his initial statement, Ampaw reiterated his respect for the Manhyia Palace and assured that he would honor the invitation.

He stated, “Everything that I have said will be subjected to strict proof. I am going there happily because I will explain everything to them. I will wear white-white. I am ready.”

Liverpool book their place in Carabao Cup final

Liverpool secured their spot in the Carabao Cup final by holding Fulham to a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage, sealing a 3-2 aggregate victory after the first leg advantage.

Luis Diaz’s early goal was equalized by Issa Diop, but Liverpool’s resilience in the second leg earned them the opportunity to face Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea at Wembley on February 25.

Fulham, trailing 2-1 from the first leg, started with determination, with Joao Palhinha’s volley and Antonee Robinson’s dangerous delivery, but Liverpool took the lead in the 11th minute. Jarell Quansah’s long ball caught Timothy Castagne off guard, allowing Diaz to beat him in the air and score past Bernd Leno at the near post. Diaz had another goal disallowed for offside, keeping Fulham in the game.

Raul Jimenez’s long-range shot tested Liverpool’s goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, but Fulham couldn’t find the equalizer they desperately needed. Despite a five-minute flurry with attempts from Willian and Tom Cairney, Fulham couldn’t break through.

In the second half, Fulham continued to press, with Bobby Decordova-Reid hitting the post, and Liverpool weathered the storm. Ryan Gravenberch and Darwin Nunez had chances for Liverpool, but their efforts missed the target.

Fulham finally leveled the score in the 77th minute when Harry Wilson’s cross found Diop, who expertly finished to give Fulham hope. Despite a late push, Liverpool held on to secure their place in the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.

In a 0-0 draw between DR Congo and Tanzania in Korhogo, DR Congo secured their place in the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations, while Tanzania was eliminated from the tournament.

The second half featured attempts from Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, with one shot denied by Tanzania goalkeeper Aishi Manula, and another sent over the goal. Despite these efforts, DR Congo drew their third consecutive game in Group F.

Sebastien Desabre’s team finished second in the group, behind Morocco, and is set to face Egypt in the last 16 on Sunday. Tanzania’s challenging campaign, marked by the suspension of head coach Adel Amrouche and the appointment of assistant Hemed Suleiman as acting boss, concludes with them finishing at the bottom of the group with two points.

The match itself saw early attempts, with former Chelsea player Gael Kakuta testing Manula with a free-kick and Tanzania captain Mbwana Samatta firing a shot off target in the first 15 minutes. Manula made crucial saves, including blocking a Fiston Mayele attempt with his legs in the 30th minute.

The Leopards persisted in their late push, with Cedric Bakambu heading too high and another Wissa shot narrowly missing the target before the final whistle confirmed DR Congo’s progression with another draw.

AFCON 2023: Hakim Ziyech sees Morocco into the last 16

Hakim Ziyech propelled Morocco into the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations as Group F winners with a 1-0 triumph over Zambia.

The Chelsea midfielder, presently on loan at Turkish club Galatasaray, secured victory at Stade Laurent Pokou in San Pedro with a decisive goal seven minutes before halftime.

Ziyech’s well-executed finish proved to be the decisive moment, earning Morocco the three points they needed to top the group. DR Congo secured the runners-up position after a goalless draw with Tanzania, signaling the end of Zambia’s involvement in the tournament.

Despite a competitive start to the match, with attempts from Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Zambia’s Patson Daka narrowly missing the mark, clear opportunities were scarce in the first half. Sofiane Boufal and Azzedine Ounahi also failed to find the target as both teams sought to assert themselves in an evenly contested game.

In the 30th minute, Kennedy Musonda tested Morocco’s goalkeeper Yassine Bounou with a long-range strike, but defender Frankie Musonda crucially intervened seconds later to deny Ismael Saibari from reaching skipper Ziyech’s cross in front of the goal.

Zambia had a close call 10 minutes before halftime when defender Nayef Aguerd headed wide from Ziyech’s cross. However, Morocco’s 30-year-old skipper found the back of the net within three minutes after Zambia’s keeper Lawrence Mulenga spilled a low cross.

Mulenga managed to parry Ayoub El Kaabi’s header, preventing Morocco from extending their lead, and the teams headed into halftime with Morocco holding a narrow one-goal advantage.

After the break, half-time substitute Amine Adli created two goal-scoring opportunities, but Zambia’s defense held firm. Lameck Banda came close to equalizing with a chance in the 59th minute.

As Morocco tired, Zambia intensified their efforts, with Lubambo Musonda shooting just too high and Emmanuel Banda forcing a save. Substitute Fashion Sakala caused problems for Morocco, but despite their efforts, Zambia couldn’t find a way back into the game, and Morocco secured a 1-0 victory.

  • Alan condemns 15% VAT on electricity

Alan condemns 15% VAT on electricity

An independent presidential aspirant and former Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has criticized the government’s introduction of an additional Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity users who exceed the lifeline threshold.

In a statement on the social media platform X, the founder of the Movement For Change expressed disapproval, arguing that given the current challenges faced by Ghanaians, imposing new taxes was untimely and added further burden to the citizens.

“In the kind of economic situation we find ourselves, every government policy, plan or decision, has to have the objective of achieving the following; reduce the cost of living, reduce the cost of doing business, reduce exchange rate, and create sustainable jobs for the youth” the former minister said.

Mr. Kyerematen emphasized that levying VAT on electricity would not contribute to any positive outcomes; instead, it would exacerbate the difficulties faced by the average Ghanaian.

The former Trade and Industry Minister noted that his Great Transformational Plan (GTP), “as a trusted roadmap, would guide us to achieve the above objectives and more.”

Various groups and individuals, including the Trades Union Congress (TUC), have strongly condemned the imposition of VAT on electricity. The TUC, through its General Secretary, Dr. Yaw Baah, issued a seven-day ultimatum to the government, demanding the withdrawal of the tax.

Dr. Baah underscored the detrimental impact of this decision on the livelihoods of ordinary Ghanaians, especially pensioners and those with low incomes.

During a press conference on Tuesday, January 23, he emphasized that the impoverished population in the country cannot afford to bear the additional tax burden. Dr. Baah called on the government and its agencies to promptly reverse the implementation of the proposed tax.

“It’s always the poor people in this country, including pensioners, who bear the brunt. And we should not allow that to continue. Organised Labour, we have come together and our message to the government is very simple, we cannot pay VAT on electricity.

“We will not pay it today or tomorrow. Organised Labour is demanding the immediate withdrawal of the letter, and another directive from the Finance Minister to Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), ECG to stop the implementation of the VAT on electricity. We are giving the government, up to January 31, 2024, to withdraw the letter,” Dr Yaw Baah said.

He emphasised that they would take the necessary action if the Finance Minister does not instruct GRIDCo and ECG to retract the letter.

“If by that time the Minister of Finance fails to give directive to GRIDCO and ECG, we will advise ourselves,” he said.

In a letter dated January 1, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) to implement a 15 percent VAT on electricity consumption. The objective behind this move is to generate revenue for the government’s COVID-19 recovery program.

The government has provided a rationale for the imposition of the VAT, citing it as a crucial component of their strategy to generate additional funds for the COVID-19 recovery initiative. Deputy Energy Minister Agyapa Mercer, in a media interview on Monday, January 15, acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but emphasized its necessity in settling debts owed to independent power producers.

“Obviously, if you look at the scope of the tax and what it is intended to do—raise revenue to meet some obligations of the government in the energy sector—it will interest you to know that, as we speak, as of July 2023, the amount of money that we owe to the IPPs alone is in the region of GH¢1.7 billion.

Chris Hughton sacked after Ghana’s poor show at 2023 AFCON

Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior national team, Black Stars, with immediate effect.

The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.

This comes after Ghana’s poor performance at this year’s AFCON tournament, a reminder of what took place a biennium ago.

Ghana failed to advance from the group stages once again after failing to beat Mozambique this time around.

Ghana exited Group B with just 2 points after losing to Cape Verde, drawing with Egypt and subsequently Mozambique.

The Ghana Football Association has noted that it will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.

Meanwhile, some players of the Black Stars such as Alexander Djiku, Mohammed Kudus have apologized for the team’s poor performance.

Vanessa Nicole, the mother of Funny Face’s twins, has noted that her priority in life is to protect her mother and her four children.

In an interview with Zion Felix, the young mother opened up about her views on being ostracized for having tattoos.

According to Nicole, she does not live to please individuals; however, she is cautious of actions that could affect her children’s and her mother’s wellbeing.

“In life, what you are supposed to think about is the people in your circle. That’s why I’m saying that in my life, when I do things, I only think about how the lives of my children will be affected. Will this affect my mother? Anything outside the box, I don’t care,” she said.

Despite having numerous tattoos, Vanessa noted that she does not have a tattoo of anything that reminds her of her former lovers.

“No.. Nothing. You don’t have to just tattoo your baby daddy’s name. No. I know people who do it. I won’t tattoo my husband’s name or boyfriend’s name on my body.”

She has tattoos on major parts of her body.

She indicated that she does not live her life based on the perspective of others. She made this statement in reference to the assumption that individuals with tattoos are rowdy and not well-behaved.

“In life, what you are supposed to think about is the people in your circle. That’s why I’m saying that in my life, when I do things, I only think about how the lives of my children will be affected. Will this affect my mother? Anything outside the box, I don’t care,” she said.

Mozambique will beat Ghana if they score the first goal – Eagle Prophet

Renowned Ghanaian prophet, Prophet Reindolph Oduro Gyebi, popularly known as Eagle Prophet, has predicted a win for Mozambique in the clash against the Black Stars today.

Ghana is gearing up for its final Group B game against Mozambique at 8 pm today, and for Prophet Reindolph Oduro Gyebi, Ghana’s best chance would be to strike first.

According to him, it would be game over for the senior national team should Mozambique score the first goal.

“The dangerous aspect is, once Mozambique scores Ghana, it will be difficult for Ghana to equalize. They will score another. I’m prophesying and not predicting.

“The only thing is Ghana should not sit down,” he said.

He also alleged that there is a spirt of confusion around the Black Stars camp.

“Once they drop the confusion and theh succeed, even those 2 goals will be little. They will be able to score 5 goals,” he added.

Court dismisses Sophie Turner’s lawsuit for Joe Jonas to return their children to the UK

A New York judge has dismissed actor Sophie Turner’s lawsuit against pop star Joe Jonas, in which she requested the return of their two children to England.

Turner and Jonas, who announced their split in September after four years of marriage, have been engaged in a court battle over the residence of their young children born in 2020 and 2022.

Turner filed the lawsuit in September, alleging that Jonas wrongfully kept their kids in New York City while touring with the Jonas Brothers instead of returning them to England, where she was filming a series.

A representative for Joe Jonas stated that the singer believed he and Sophie Turner were going to amicably co-parent. The representative added that Jonas didn’t give up the kids’ passports because it would have violated a court order in Florida, where their divorce was initiated.

The lawsuit filed by Turner has been dismissed by a New York judge, with both parties consenting. The judge noted that Jonas and Turner reached a temporary child custody agreement in October, and a consent order containing that parenting agreement was filed and approved by the Family Division of the High Court of England and Wales on Jan. 11.

AFCON 2023: Black Stars team to earn $30,000 each as Qualification bonus

The Ghana Black Stars squad is set to receive a qualification bonus of $30,000 each if they progress to the next round of the AFCON 2023.

The Ghana Football Association, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, has adopted a system where the team earns a qualification bonus instead of the traditional winning bonus.

Under this new arrangement, even if the team doesn’t secure victory in any of their three group games but manages to qualify for the next round, each player will receive $30,000.

This marks a departure from the previous structure, where the winning bonus for each group game was $10,000. The combined potential bonus for winning all three group games now stands at $30,000, provided they qualify for the knockout stage.

In summary, upon qualifying for the next stage, whether as the 2nd team in Group B or one of the fortunate 3rd-placed teams, the 27-man squad and their technical team will receive a $30,000 qualification bonus each.

  • GPRTU orders drivers to halt 20% increase in transport fare

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has instructed its members to defer the planned increase in transport fares.

Initially, the union had proposed a 20% upward adjustment in fares starting January 24, 2024, citing the increasing cost of spare parts, logistics, and taxes.

However, the decision to defer the fare increment suggests a willingness to engage in discussions with relevant stakeholders, as encouraged by Transport Deputy Minister Hassan Tampuli, to find an amicable solution to the challenges faced by the transport sector.

“So, this is just the tip of the iceberg, so sometimes it gets very heated in our meetings, but at the end of the day, we can come to a compromise.

“I believe on this occasion it would not be any different from what has happened in the past,” he said on January 18, 2024.

  • Bawumia will ‘sweep’ Ofori-Atta, others should he become President – Political analyst

Political analyst, Yaw Asani Tanoh, is of the assertion that there is some sort of friction between Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

In an interview on Neat FM, Mr Tanoh claimed that the Finance Minister and other individuals had ganged up on the Vice President, immobilizing him from carrying out any meaningful initiative or making any important decision.

He however noted that should the tables turn and Dr Bawumia be elected president, the Finance Minister and his colleagues would find themselves wanting.

“The Vice President is only a helper. The most powerful person in the ruling government today is Ken Ofori-Atta. The second person is the one that doesn’t have a portfolio. President Akufo-Addo is like in 5th place.

“The guys are there and they will not allow Dr Bawumia. We should be fair to ourselves. Kennedy Agyapong came out to say they bully Dr Bawumia. Things are happening.

“I can bet you that if he gets a good standing, he will sweep them. The perception is that he will be manipulated but if Dr Bawumia becomes president with these Hausa people around, Ken Ofori-Atta will be in hot waters,” he said.

In November last year, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong has expressed displeasure about the effectiveness of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in his capacity as the country’s Vice President.

In a post on social media, Mr Agyapong questioned the Vice President with the claim that he has allowed the Minister of Finance, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, to bully him.

“If you are a Vice President, how do you sit down for a Finance Minister to bully you? If I’m a Vice President how can I sit down for a Finance Minister to bully me? Now you come and tell us you have not been given an opportunity,” Ken Agyapong is heard saying in the post and asked, “What else do you want us to give you to prove that you are effective?”

This comes months after Onua TV/Radio presenter, Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, made a shocking revelation about the alleged maltreatment meted to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia by some big names in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

According to Captain Smart, the Vice President has been belittled by many individuals in the ruling party thanks to President Akufo-Addo, whom Captain Smart alleges has sidelined his vice in the running of the country despite his progressive policies.

In an edition of Onua TV’s Maakye Show, Captain Smart named Gabby Otchere-Darko, Asante Bediatuo, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as some of the individuals who purportedly have no or less reverence for the Vice President.

Also, The Herald reports that the two high-ranking officials are engaged in persistent disagreements over economic policies.

Despite their close understanding, reports suggest that the Finance Minister does not consistently attend Economic Management Team meetings chaired by Dr. Bawumia. When present, he is said to arrive late or act contrary to the team’s decisions.

Infantino pushes for automatic forfeit when fans commit racist abuse

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has called for the implementation of an automatic forfeit of games for teams whose fans commit racist abuse.

This statement comes in the wake of racist incidents at matches involving AC Milan and Coventry City, where players reported hearing monkey noises from the crowd.

Infantino described the incidents as “totally abhorrent” and stressed the need for stricter measures against such behavior, suggesting an automatic forfeit for teams whose fans engage in racist abuse.

He said in a FIFA post on X: “As well as the three-step process (match stopped, match re-stopped, match abandoned), we have to implement an automatic forfeit for the team whose fans have committed racism and caused the match to be abandoned, as well as worldwide stadium bans and criminal charges for racists.

“FIFA and football shows full solidarity to victims of racism and any form of discrimination. Once and for all: No to racism! No to any form of discrimination!

Ewoyaa Project: Assore International to purchase portion of Piedmont Lithium’s Atlantic shares

Piedmont Lithium, a US-based company, has revealed plans to sell a portion of its shares in Atlantic Lithium to Assore International, the largest shareholder in Atlantic.

The transaction involves selling 24.3 million shares of Atlantic at £0.25 each, generating approximately $7.8 million for Piedmont Lithium.

“We have always viewed our Atlantic shares as a potential source of capital and are pleased to further bolster our cash balance through this agreement,” said Piedmont Lithium president and CEO Keith Phillips.

The sale of shares by Piedmont Lithium to Assore International represents approximately 3.8% of Atlantic Lithium’s outstanding shares. Following the transaction, Piedmont’s shareholding in Atlantic will be reduced to about 5.2%.

Assore, the largest shareholder in Atlantic Lithium, will now own around 28.4% of the company. Piedmont emphasized that the sale has no impact on its joint venture, earn-in, or offtake position with Atlantic or the Ewoyaa lithium project in Ghana.

“We remain confident about the potential of Ewoyaa as a logistically advantaged, low-cost producer of spodumene concentrate, but are taking a disciplined approach to deploying capital in the current lithium price environment and positioning ourselves for the recovery we anticipate in the lithium market,” said Phillips.

Piedmont Lithium aims to become a major lithium hydroxide producer in North America by processing spodumene concentrate from projects where it has an economic interest.

The company is involved in projects such as the Carolina Lithium and Tennessee Lithium projects in the US, partnerships in Quebec with Sayona Mining, and a collaboration in Ghana with Atlantic Lithium.

AC Milan’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan expressed the need for change, stating that racist abuse has been a longstanding issue in football.

He told Milan TV after confirming he heard fans making monkey noises: “This shouldn’t exist in the world of football but unfortunately for many years this is a recurrence.

“Something must be done to change things. We all have to react, we must do something because you can’t play like this.”

However, Coventry midfielder Palmer admitted he was sceptical things would change in the game, also writing on X: “Racism is a disgrace… it has no place in the world, let alone football.

“I’m black and proud and I am raising my three kids to be the exact same. I’ll be honest, it feels like things will never change, no matter how hard we try.

Former Tamale Central MP, Inusah Fuseini, has rejected claims that there is tension between former President John Dramani Mahama and Tamale South MP, Haruna Iddrisu.

There have been reports that there is a strained relationship between the two bigwigs in the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Such rumors have been sparked by @Gen_Buhari, an NPP activist, on social media.

Nothing substantial has been raised as the cause of the alleged strained relationship.

Responding to the claim in an interview on Neat FM, Mr Inusah Fuseini, considered to be in close relation to Mr Mahama, noted that he is unaware of such a conflict.

“I don’t exactly know what is happening between Mahama and Haruna Iddrisu. The devil himself is incapable of knowing, honestly. So I can’t pretend to know. I simply do not understand what is the problem between Haruna and Mahama,” he said.

The former legislator noted that the claims could not be true as the NDC flagbearer, Mr Mahama and Haruna Iddrisu, recently toured Wale together.

“Recently, Mahama went to Bole. While returning, he specifically invited Haruna to join him in Wale. He went with Haruna. I don’t see anything between Haruna Iddrisu and Mahama. I can say with authority, the home Haruna Issrisu lived in at Bobuase was Mahama’s father’s house,” he said.

A man ‘killed’ his wife just to take money from me! – Sammy Awuku details woes of politicians in Ghana

Sammy Awuku, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Akropong constituency, has shared experiences of politicians being targeted for financial assistance under false pretenses.

According to Mr Awuku, many politicians are approached for financial aid, and while some requests are genuine, others are fraudulent attempts to extract money.

He recounted an incident where an individual sought funds for his wife’s funeral, and Mr Awuku, having been a victim of deception before, asked for proof. The individual provided an obituary as evidence.

He gave in and supported the man, only to find out that he had fabricated his wife’s demise.

“Someone printed a poster of his wife’s obituary, not knowing it was not true. He came to me. I asked when it was because during my time as a youth organizer, people took advantage of me, so I used science and data.

“He was lucky and got to trick me. A month later, I saw him and asked why he was no longer in black, just a short period after his wife’s burial. He was with someone, and the individual asked him when his wife passed. He told his friend that it is not everything I have to tell you.

“I was like, what, your own friend? Later, his friend called and told me that his wife had not passed,” he said.

NPP delegation visit Manhyia Palace to address Otumfuo-Wontumi controversy

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has announced that he is leading a delegation of party officials to the Manhyia Palace in response to the recent brouhaha involving Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako.

He made this known while announcing the guidelines ahead of the parliamentary primaries scheduled for January 27.

Bernard Antwi Boasiako also known as Chairman Wontumi is accused of making derogatory remarks about Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

This is said to have unfolded at the party’s recently held Ashanti Regional Parliamentary Vetting. It is said alleged that Chairman Wontumi had cast aspersions on the Asantehene at the said event.

But Chairman Wontumi has refuted allegations that he made derogatory remarks about Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene.

He says that these reports are orchestrated by his opponents, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to create public discontent towards him.

As the matter unfolds, Chairman Wontumi has also been accused of cursing the Kokosohene, Nana Kwaku Duah, with the ‘Antoa’ deity.

The situation unfolded when Justin Kodua, concerned about reports of Chairman Wontumi’s alleged attack on Otumfuo, called the Kokosohene to verify the news. During the phone conversation, Justin Kodua added Chairman Wontumi on a conference call to get his input on the controversial issue.

Unexpectedly, Chairman Wontumi, upon hearing the voice of Kokosohene, became angry and started to curse him. In his alleged curses, Wontumi reportedly invoked the powerful ‘Antoa‘ deity and other river gods, praying for harm to befall the Kokosohene without any apparent provocation.

The Kokosohene confirmed the incident, stating that Wontumi cursed him, praying for the river deities to strike him dead.

Meanwhile, Mr Frimpong Kodua has cautioned NPP supporters against making public statements that could be derogatory to the chieftaincy institution.

150 million gallons of water are supplied to Accra daily – GWCL

Management of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has addressed challenges faced in ensuring a consistent water supply to residents in the Greater Accra Region.

The company stated that its production of water supply to Accra is 150 million gallons per day.

However, residents in various parts of Accra have raised concerns about irregular water supply, affecting their daily lives and leading some to purchase water from tankers at high prices.

GWCL acknowledged the need for upgrades to meet the increasing demands of Accra’s growing population. The company also recognized that some complaints were related to localized faults that could be promptly addressed when reported.

During an interview on Citi FM, the Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Ing. Dr. Clifford Braimah, said, “Production of water supply to Accra is 150 million gallons per day or 682,000 cubic meters per day.”

Ing. Dr. Clifford Braimah attributed the shortfall in water supply to an unplanned problem encountered at the Kpong and Weija Water Treatment Plants.

“The recent problem was an unplanned issue at Kpong [Treatment Plant] and that of Weija [Water Treatment Plant]. There are very old pumps that have been trying to manage, and they normally break down at Weija. At Kpong, after the flooding due to the Akosombo dam spillage, there was a weed blockage. Everything is normalized now, and the challenge has been resolved,” the Managing Director of GWCL said.

Ing. Dr. Clifford Braimah highlighted several challenges faced by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), including tampering with pipelines by some customers, lack of capital, and overpopulation.

“Together with the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), we should be able to move to the government and say that there must be some level of injection of capital. We will have to make a proper case that the gap will be closed. If they leave it to us, some people will not pay their tariffs, some will get people who will do illegal connections. Once they do the illegal connections, they don’t take into consideration our hydraulic system. These are the challenges we are faced with.”

He called for the retooling of the old system, which has become obsolete, suggesting that some pumps need to be changed.

“We need to retool the old system; if you go to Kpong [Treatment Plant] today, we have pumps that are as old as 1965. For the regulator, it’s dead. Because we are still using them, we take money to repair them when they break down. So, renewal of the old system,” he stated.

NPP warns parliamentary aspirants against camping delegates ahead of primaries

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong warning to parliamentary aspirants against busing or camping delegates ahead of the upcoming primaries.

General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, cautioned that aspirants engaging in such practices would face sanctions. The warning was issued as part of guidelines announced ahead of the parliamentary primaries scheduled for January 27.

Additionally, the party is working to resolve outstanding petitions filed by disgruntled members regarding concerns about the primaries. Mr. Frimpong Kodua also cautioned delegates against using phones to capture their ballots after voting.

Elections in the Nhyiaeso Constituency will proceed following the discontinuation of a court case against the party by a polling station executive from the constituency.

“The party has formulated these rules and regulations to ensure free and fair elections and we believe that everyone should be allowed to feel free to walk to the polling centre to cast their votes. It is of this belief that we have made the statement that no one should camp delegates at any place.

“Those who take pictures of their votes, aside from nullifying your votes, it is an offence and you would be handed over to the Police.”

Justin Kodua Frimpong further announced that he was leading a delegation of party officials to the Manhyia Palace in response to recent alleged comments made by the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, against the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu.
