Egypt manages a draw against Mozambique after late goal from Salah

Mohamed Salah played a crucial role in ensuring Egypt avoided defeat, scoring from the penalty spot to secure a 2-2 draw against Mozambique in Group B of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The seven-time AFCON champions got off to a strong start with Mostafa Mohamed finding the net within two minutes to give them the lead.

However, quick goals from Witi and Clesio in the second half brought hope for Mozambique to secure their first victory in the tournament.

With the game hanging in the balance, Edmilson Macandza’s challenge on Mostafa Mohamed led to a late penalty for Egypt. Salah stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick in the seventh minute of added time, securing the draw for his team.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) played a role in suggesting a review of the challenge, prompting referee Dahane Beida to assess the situation on the screen. Salah’s precise penalty, striking the inside of the left-hand upright, salvaged a point for Egypt.

In their next matches, Egypt is set to face Ghana on January 18, while Mozambique will go up against Cape Verde.

‘The economy is broke’ – Mahama backs down from making further promises

Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has emphasized a measured approach in making promises ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Mahama acknowledged that the existing economic conditions impose constraints on his ability to put forward extravagant commitments.

These remarks were delivered during his address to NDC supporters in Hohoe, situated in the Volta Region. He was ay Hohoe to climax his two-day tour dubbed “Building the Ghana we want together”.

“…I am being very measured in the promises that I make because we all know the crisis in which this country has been plunged [into]. We will show you the books and finances of this country, and you will realise the harm that the New Patriotic Party administration has done this country, the economy is broke.”

Additionally, he announced that, if elected, the next NDC government would institute a policy to provide monthly allowances of GH¢1,000 to all Assembly members.

Mahama estimated that the implementation of this allowance program would amount to GH¢80 million annually for the nation.

He added: “The office of the President’s budget alone is more than GH¢2 billion. We are going to reduce the President’s office expenditure to pay the Assembly members.”

Tottenham fight to deny Man United victory

In a thrilling Premier League clash, Tottenham staged two comebacks to deny Manchester United a victory in front of their new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Ratcliffe, attending his first match since confirming a proposed 25% purchase of the club on Christmas Eve, expressed excitement about being present.

Despite Rasmus Hojlund giving United an early lead in the third minute, Brazilian striker Richarlison equalized for the visitors. Marcus Rashford then put the hosts ahead before Rodrigo Bentancur leveled the score a minute into the second half with a powerful shot.

During the game, Ratcliffe, seated alongside Sir Alex Ferguson in the directors’ box, witnessed Tottenham dominating possession with 16 shots compared to United’s nine, and only a third of United’s six shots on target.

The draw wasn’t enough for Tottenham to surpass rivals Arsenal in the standings, but it maintained an eight-point lead over United, who could drop to 10th place before their next fixture against Wolves on February 1.

Ratcliffe had a privileged viewing experience as Hojlund and Rashford, who had collectively scored only four Premier League goals before this game, found the net. Both players played crucial roles in each other’s goals, adding to the significance of the occasion.

Hojlund’s early goal showcased a surge in confidence, while Rashford, aided by Bruno Fernandes and Hojlund, scored a well-executed goal. Despite Rashford’s performance, he seemed discontent when substituted three minutes from time.

Tottenham’s Betancur, a fan favorite, had an eventful day, clearing a shot off the line, receiving a caution for a needless action, and scoring a brilliant goal, marking his return from injury.

Tottenham deserved at least a draw, with new signing Radu Dragusin making his debut. However, concerns arose as Micky van de Ven was forced off with an injury, with hopes that it’s fatigue-related as he returned after a two-month hamstring injury absence.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou praised his team after the match, revealing that some players had struggled with illness during the week, including Dejan Kulusevski, who missed out due to being unwell.

Ghana make first disappointing start in AFCON 2023 tournament

In the opening match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Cape Verde secured a dramatic victory over Ghana with a late goal by substitute Gary Rodrigues.

The match, initially balanced, took an unexpected turn as Jameiro Monteiro capitalized on a rebound after 17 minutes, putting Cape Verde in the lead with a 1-0 advantage.

Despite the early setback, Ghana pressed forward, and Majeed Ashimeru thought he had equalized with a brilliant strike, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside, as Ransford-Yeboah was deemed to have interfered with the goalkeeper’s line of sight.

Gary Rodrigues makes Cape Verde shine

Trailing at halftime, Ghana made a strong comeback in the second half, with Fenerbahce’s central defender Djiku leveling the score from a Jordan Ayew corner. Djiku’s heroics continued with two crucial goal-saving clearances that kept the Black Stars in the game.

However, Cape Verde capitalized on a moment of defensive lapses from Ghana, as Gary Rodrigues scored in added time to seal a 2-1 victory for the Blue Sharks. Despite goalkeeper Richard Ofori’s efforts in the final 10 minutes, Ghana couldn’t overturn the deficit.

The defeat leaves Ghana with a challenging task ahead, as they now look to bounce back against Egypt in their next match on January 18.

Luton’s Lockyer thanks people who saved his life after cardiac arrest

Luton captain Tom Lockyer has thanked the heroes who saved his life after suffering a cardiac arrest at Bournemouth earlier this month.

The 29-year-old collapsed in the 59th minute of the Premier League clash at Vitality Stadium, resulting in the December 16 fixture being abandoned.

Lockyer suffered a cardiac arrest and was discharged from hospital five days later following a successful procedure to fit an implantable cardioverter defibrillator.

The Welshman made his first comments since the incident via his Instagram account on New Year’s Eve, providing an update on his well-being and expressing gratitude to all those who helped.

He said: “I would just like to say that I am doing very well and feeling very much myself after the cardiac arrest I suffered in Bournemouth.

“The reason I’m doing so well is all down to the heroic actions of the players, staff, doctors and paramedics.

“I feel thankful that this happened to me surrounded by these heroes. They saved my life. I will never forget what you did for me.”

Concerns over Lockyer’s health had been heightened after he collapsed during May’s Championship play-off final victory over Coventry, leading him to undergo surgery to correct an atrial fibrillation.

The defender returned to action for the start of the new season, and the Wales international highlighted 10 people for particular praise after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Lockyer named Phil Ballett, Abbey Clark, Dean Fernee, and Adam Todhunter, along with Dr. Craig Roberts, Dr. Mufeed Ni’man, and Bournemouth midfielder Philip Billing.

Simon Parsell, Chris Phillips, and Dr. Amos Ogunkoya were others included in the front image of an Instagram post featuring a lengthy caption.

  • Forestry Commission to use new Wildlife Bill to boost ecotourism

Forestry Commission to use new Wildlife Bill to boost ecotourism

The Wildlife Resources Management Bill 2022 in Ghana, aimed at promoting ecotourism, job creation, and economic growth, is currently awaiting Presidential assent.

According to Nyadia Sulemana Nelson, the Deputy Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, the bill aims to revise and consolidate laws related to wildlife and protected areas, aligning them with existing policies and emerging trends in the natural resources sector.

Additionally, the bill aims to facilitate private investments in zoos and wildlife sanctuaries while providing legal support to local communities in wildlife management through the creation of Community Resource Management Areas (CREMAs).

“The private sector has already demonstrated interest in participating in the development of the sector, and since the government cannot do it alone, we need to create the enabling environment to attract the necessary private investments into the sector, with a strong regulatory framework,” Mr Nelson said.

The Deputy Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission in Ghana, Nyadia Sulemana Nelson, highlighted the country’s potential in ecotourism, emphasizing its abundant resources that could position Ghana as a major ecotourism destination globally.

Richard Gyimah, the Director for Stakeholders, Ecotourism, and Wildlife at the commission, noted that private participation in the wildlife sector, particularly in establishing zoos and wildlife parks, would be done in collaboration with the Commission.

“We always say the private sector is the engine of growth, so this is another area we have identified that the private sector can partner with the government to induce growth in the country. Already, we have been partnering with some private operators, but the law provides the legal backing to deepen that,” Mr Gyimah stated.

Richard Gyimah expressed the belief that private investment in the wildlife sector would lead to the expansion of the subsector, creating job opportunities for various roles such as tour guides, zookeepers, rangers, and within the broader hospitality industry.

He also emphasized that private participation would provide researchers and academic institutions with access to a wider range of wildlife species. Gyimah highlighted the potential for private sector involvement to elevate ecotourism in Ghana to international standards, generating increased tourism revenue and foreign exchange.

“With private sector participation, we believe these revenue numbers will increase, and we will increase the revenue accruing to the state,” he said.

Statistics showed that the sector have seen remarkable growth in activities, especially after the end of the Covid-19 pandemic.

From 300,000 visitors to ecotourism sites in 2022, the number has increased to nearly 400,000 in 2023, and the commission aims to attract at least 500,000 visitors in 2024.

Also, he said the visits generated 4.5 million Ghana cedis (374,000 U.S. dollars) in 2022 and 6.0 million cedis (499,000 dollars) for the commission this year.

In 2024, the Commission plans to supervise the successful completion of reclamation and revegetation activities in mined-out sites within the Denyau Shelterbelt, Supuma and Afao Hills Forest Reserves, submit Legal Acquisition Findings (LAF) for Rosewood to CITES Secretariat, Geneva and obtain approval for Rosewood quota and a US$7 million funding for private plantation development as well as cut sod for Koforidua Zoo project.

  • We will introduce ‘Limannism’ – PNC celebrates 43 years since Dr Hilla Limann was overthrown

We will introduce ‘Limannism’ – PNC celebrates 43 years since Dr Hilla Limann was overthrown

The People’s National Convention (PNC) observed the 43rd anniversary of the overthrow of President Dr. Hilla Limann of the Third Republic of Ghana.

The PNC, in a press statement, recalled the overthrow of the democratically-elected People’s National Party (PNP) government by the PNDC government through a military coup.

The PNC highlighted Dr. Limann’s principles, including a belief in moral values and condemnation of selfishness, greed, and corruption.

The party expressed dissatisfaction with how Dr. Limann, who ruled for 27 months, was treated, considering his commitment to these principles.

“Interestingly, the PNDC government that removed him from office on allegations of corruption never found any evidence against President Hilla Limann or his appointees, or immediate family members acquiring wealth at the expense of the taxpayers,” the party said.

The PNC, in its statement, emphasized that the coup plotted in 1981, leading to the overthrow of Dr. Limann, had negative consequences for the quality of life in Ghana. The party asserted that the coup resulted in increased hardship for the entire country.

The party emphasised that Ghanaians lost their “dignity and sense of importance due to this coup.”

The PNC, therefore, calls on Ghanaians to join in celebrating the remarkable and selfless leadership of Dr. Limann.

“His exemplary life must inspire and serve as a form of education to the younger generation about the true nature of politics as a means to serve and not to be served.

“We should strive to exemplify the values exhibited by Dr Limann, ensuring our pursuit of political power is not driven by selfish motives but rather by a genuine desire to uplift the pride and well-being of Ghanaians,” the statement further said.

The party added that “A future PNC government would introduce ‘Limannism’ as a subject at all levels of education to help instil in the younger generation principles of selflessness, morality, and compassion.

“It will require the PNC to serve as the Biblical David to confront and eliminate the Goliath (corruption) from this country.”

Tottenham and Chelsea are reportedly in talks over a £40 million deal for Conor Gallagher.

“The stone the builder refused has become the cornerstone” – Social media users troll Achimota School for sharing Tyrone Marhguy’s success stories

Achimota School is having a hard time on social media platform, X, for posting the recent achievements chalked by its former student, Tyrone Marhguy.

Tyrone, a young Rastafarian, was initially denied admission to Achimota School due to his dreadlocks in 2021. The student, together with another took the school to court. In court, the School was ordered to admit the Rastafarian students.

During his stay in the school, it was reported that he was kicked off the school’s National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) team, but none of the claims were substantiated.

After completing Achimota, Tyrone succeeded in the West African Senior Secondary School Examinations (WASSCE), securing an impressive 8 As.

Shortly after, it was found out that he achieved a remarkable feat by attaining the 99th percentile globally in the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).

The SAT is a widely recognized and competitive examination used by many universities in the United States to assess students’ abilities before they enroll in university.

Marhguy scored an impressive 1500 out of a maximum 1600, ranking in the 99th percentile. This means he performed better than 99% of all the candidates who took the examination in the year 2022. Such a high score is particularly noteworthy as only 1 out of every 100 candidates typically attains this level of achievement.

Most recent of his achievements which have blown the minds of many is receiving two prestigious awards from the American Mathematics Olympiad 2023 for his exceptional accomplishments in Grade 12.

Marhguy secured the title of the 2023 overall national top scorer, earning the Gold medal after competing with over 150,000 students worldwide.

Additionally, he was honored with the Vanda Science International Olympiad in the Silver category, surpassing 38,000 test-takers.

In recognition of his academic excellence, Marhguy has been officially inducted into the International Junior Honour Society, 2023.

Achimota School is among the many individuals and institutions telling the success stories of Tyrone. But the school’s actions have warranted attacks due to its earlier position on Tyrone’s admission.

Some X users have accused the educational institution of being shameless for celebrating an individual they rejected. Some users are also not pleased by the fact that the school has not apologised to Tyrone and his family for their earlier position.

“So u guys don’t have the shame to post him after all the racism act you pulled towards him,” one user, @pablothetrainer, wrote.

  • Guinness World Record sing-a-thon attempt was to end on Sunday – Afua Asantewaa’s official doctor

Guinness World Record sing-a-thon attempt was to end on Sunday – Afua Asantewaa’s official doctor

The Medical Director of Sonotech Medical and Diagnostic Centre, Dr. Grace Buckman, who was Afua Asantewaa’s official doctor for her Guinness World Records’ longest singing marathon attempt, has explained the routine they took Afua through for the event.

According to Dr. Buckman, her team took Afua through a lot of medical checks before she started the sing-a-thon.

She noted that there were medical practitioners from various fields who came on board to offer support to her.

Recounting her experience to Joy FM’s entertainment journalist Kwame Dadzie on Showbiz A-Z, the doctor said even though Afua wanted to quit on the second day, she got encouraged and revitalized to continue.

She noted that the original plan was for her to end the program on Thursday, December 28, 2023, but Afua had suggested she wanted to extend it to Sunday, December 31, 2023.

“The original pan wasn’t for end on yesterday [Friday December 29, 2023] like we did, it was supposed to be the day before [Thursday] so we actually had a meeting with the family, the main players and everything and we had a beautiful exit plan.

But then in the morning when we were supposed to wrap up, we didn’t know where the energy came from. Now she had a lot of energy and started going on again with the singing and all, so we said let’s allow her for some hours again and see how it goes. But later in the evening again we realised a dip. A lot of fatique had set in; not just physically but mentally as well, so you realised there were dead times when she wasn’t really singing so we wanted to stop at that point but during that time she even said she even wanted to end on Sunday,” she told the host Kwame Dadzie.

Dr. Grace Buckman (Medical Director – Sonotech Medical and Diagnostic Centre)

She further noted that they had to come to an agreement with Afua and explain to her why she needed to end the singing marathon earlier than she wanted.

Dr. Buckman also explained that there was a lot of toll on Afua’s body, and the medical team was not only concerned about what was happening at the moment but the aftermath. They were scared Afua could have health issues after the event.

A team of 26 health practitioners helped Afua on this project.

Afua Asantewaa, an event organizer, concluded her Guinness World Record attempt to break the record for the longest individual singing marathon at 7:00 am on Friday, December 29, 2023.

She endured a five-day singing marathon that commenced at midnight at 12:00 am on Sunday, December 24, 2023, to surpass the 105 hours record set by Indian artist Sunil Waghmare in 2012.

At the time of ending her record attempt on Friday morning, she had sung for five days, six hours, and 55 minutes.

While addressing the public after her remarkable feat, Afua Asantewaa expressed gratitude to everyone who supported her, including those who showed up at the Akwaaba Village and those who could not.

“At a point, I kept asking which day it was, and I finally got to know that today is Friday. On behalf of my family, team, volunteers, the media, and Ghana Tourism Authority, I would like to say thank you to everyone who participated in this attempt; it has been a smooth journey and a very successful one,” she noted.

Later, during an after-party that held to celebrate her win at the Akwaaba Village, she was named a Tourism Ambassador by the Ghana Tourism Authority.

In the meantime, Afua would have to wait for the results from the Guinness World Records after submitting the entire work to them for assessment.

Rodri heaps praise on Phil Foden after City game against Sheffield

Rodri lauded his team-mate Phil Foden after the England international guided Manchester City to victory over Sheffield United.

The 23-year-old midfielder assisted both goals as the champions cruised to a 2-0 triumph at Etihad, with Rodri benefitting from his colleague’s creativity to find the back of the net for the first time on home soil since February.

Julian Alvarez was also on the scoresheet as Pep Guardiola’s side moved ahead of Arsenal in the Premier League table with Foden teeing up the Argentine for a tap-in.

On his goal, Rodri told Sky Sports: “I thought Phil [Foden] could set to me and then to be honest I didn’t have the intention to shoot but they were dropping so I did it.

“Phil has incredible ability to turn that fast. He has this plasticity with the ball he can turn so quick.

“We had to be patient but when we can find this pass he is a gamechanger. He increases the pace he can shoot and pass.”

Rodri also stressed the importance of City learning from their mistakes against Crystal Palace, when they surrendered a 2-0 lead at the Etihad to draw 2-2.

The Spaniard added: “We learned from the last games against Crystal Palace, same feeling of the game, controlling, but at the end they had chances and we drew.

“We had to keep focusing and they [Sheff Utd] didn’t have the intention to come to us so we had to keep the ball. Important for us this victory.”

As well as picking up a crucial win, City boss Guardiola was able to call upon Kevin De Bruyne for the first time since the season opener against Burnley — and the Belgian could feature more prominently at Newcastle on Matchday 21.

The Citizens boss said: “We’ve been waiting a long time for him [De Bruyne].

“He’s turning good the last week or so. He came for the trophies today for the picture and to be here and realise when to warm up and how the people support him and look forward to seeing him again.

“Maybe Newcastle he will be ready.”

“We, as a group that is focused on development, would like to appeal to the government to take a serious look at these issues. We have over the years been fighting for the construction of the airport, which already has some groundwork at Sumbrungo. Prof. Atintono urged factions involved in the Bawku skin and the Bolgatanga chieftaincy dispute to allow peace to prevail in the region for development initiatives like the construction of an airport to move forward.

Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, said the government is committed to constructing an airport for the region.

“The last time the Vice President was here, I told him to build an airport in the region before the end of the year 2024 and we’re working seriously on it.”

Mr. Yakubu called on BONABOTO to collaborate with other stakeholders such as the Regional Coordinating Council and the academic institutions to come out with a Regional Development Strategic Plan to leverage the human and material resources the region has been endowed with.

At 26 years old, the former Liverpool striker seems to be hitting his prime and establishing himself as one of the top-flight’s dependable goalscorers. With rumors circulating about a potential January move to Arsenal, we examine the likelihood of such a transfer.

Solanke has already notched an impressive 12 goals in 18 league appearances this season, surpassing his previous best returns in the division. His goal-scoring prowess was evident in critical moments, including a significant performance and goal in Bournemouth’s 3-0 victory at Old Trafford and a recent hat-trick against Nottingham Forest.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola praised Solanke’s contributions, highlighting his commitment, physical strength, technical abilities, and overall importance to the team.

“He is doing all the good things, on the ball, off the ball.

“I think he helps his team-mates a lot. Even if he doesn’t score, he is giving us a lot of things.”

Solanke not finding the net is becoming more of a rarity now, with his recent flurry of goals helping Bournemouth move clear of the relegation zone.

    Arsenal attention

Interest in Solanke from other Premier League clubs is unsurprising given his form, which shows no sign of being unsustainable.

According to reports, Arsenal could target the former Chelsea youngster instead of pursuing Brentford striker Ivan Toney, who has not played since the end of 2022-23.

Along with Ollie Watkins and Callum Wilson, Solanke has established himself as one of a small number of reliable English No9s in the top tier.

And in a Gunners team that regularly creates chances, he could be the clinical finisher Mikel Arteta’s side needs.

Bournemouth, of course, will hope to keep hold of their star player beyond the January transfer window.

Reacting to the possibility of a move, Iraola said: “It’s very good that he [Solanke] receives some recognition because he deserves it.

“I think he is very happy here. He has shown it by renewing his contract not so long ago [in September].”

    Lessons learned

Even if Solanke is content at Bournemouth, a move to Arsenal would be tempting.

The promise of a title race and Champions League football — just a few months before Gareth Southgate names his England squad for the upcoming European Championship — would attract even the most loyal of players.

It would also be another opportunity for Solanke to prove himself at a top Premier League club after he struggled to establish himself at Liverpool between 2017 and 2019.

Dominic Solanke is now in his sixth season at Bournemouth

Reds legend John Barnes said: “He [Solanke] has shown now that he can be the main man.

“The pressure of having to do that at Liverpool and Chelsea at that young age was probably too much for him.

“Now that he’s settled, he can be a very good Premier League player in a team that’s surviving in the league, he’s playing with confidence and showing what he can do.”

Ahead of their trip to Tottenham, Bournemouth will hope they can ward off any interest and continue to benefit from Solanke’s goals for the foreseeable future.

Lloris leaves Spurs to join Los Angeles FC

Hugo Lloris, the former France No. 1, has departed Tottenham Hotspur to join Major League Soccer (MLS) team Los Angeles FC.

The 37-year-old goalkeeper spent over 11 years with Tottenham, joining from Lyon in August 2012.

During his tenure, he made 447 appearances across all competitions, keeping 151 clean sheets. Lloris, who captained France to victory in the 2018 World Cup, retired from international duty in January 2022.

Now, he is set to continue his illustrious career in California with Los Angeles FC in MLS.

LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington said: “Hugo is arguably the most successful goalkeeper of his generation and a proven winner.

“We are incredibly excited that Hugo has chosen LAFC for the next phase of his illustrious career.

“He brings unprecedented leadership experience at the highest levels of football, which we know will greatly benefit our club in our pursuit of more trophies.

“I would like to thank Tottenham for their collaboration, and I join all of Los Angeles in extending a warm welcome to Hugo, his wife Maine, and their three children to LAFC.”

Tottenham Hotspur paid tribute to Hugo Lloris, describing him as one of the club’s “greatest servants” in a statement.

The North London club added: “We wish Hugo and his family all the best for the future.

“We shall come together to say thank you to Hugo in person during half-time at Sunday’s match against Bournemouth at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“If you’re attending the game, please remain in your seat at half-time as we celebrate the career of one of our modern-day greats.”

Hugo Lloris, having not played for Tottenham since April, has made a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) side Los Angeles FC. The French goalkeeper, who had been a key figure at Spurs, departs as the club acknowledges his contributions over more than 11 years.

Lloris will now bring his experience to LAFC, seeking success in the latter part of his career. LAFC had a strong season in MLS, finishing third in the Western Conference and making it to the playoffs, where they reached the MLS Cup final.

  • We must have a system where we train incoming MPs to replace experienced ones – ACEPA

We must have a system where we train incoming MPs to replace experienced ones – ACEPA

Executive Director of the African Center for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), Dr. Rasheed Draman, emphasized the importance of having a systematic approach to grooming new talents within political parties to replace experienced MPs gradually.

He highlighted the need for mentorship programs, capacity building, and the involvement of young politicians in various parliamentary activities to prepare them for future leadership roles.

The call for deliberate grooming strategies comes as several long-serving MPs announce their decision not to seek reelection, raising questions about the potential loss of institutional knowledge and experience in the legislature.

“In Norway, the parties have academics; they prepare young people, they have a way of preparing people to go to parliament. In that system, you can have a lot of young people in parliament, with people who are already prepared, people who have gained some experience through the preparations and support that they have had from the parties.”

“In our system, I don’t know if there is any school or academic where a candidate who is preparing to go to parliament is taken through some kind of skills training and preparations. You wake up, and if there’s a mad rush, everybody wants to go to parliament without any experience. And then you have these experienced hands leaving; then it creates a big void,” he told Citinews.

Dr. Rasheed Draman expressed concern about the potential impact of the exit of experienced Members of Parliament on the overall functioning of the legislative body.

“The work of parliament, legislative work, is not for the faint-hearted; I mean, it’s not for everyone. You get the experience by doing, and you learn by doing. People become very important assets, both for the parties, parliament, and the country. I would have hoped that there has been some cause in the past for some seats to be protected. I would have hoped that the parties in parliament would have found a way, at least to ensure that through some internal negotiations and agreement, some seats will be protected,” the Executive Director of ACEPA said.

Several MPs, including key figures like Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, First Deputy Speaker Joe Osei Owusu, Atta Akyea, Joe Ghartey, and Ken Agyapong, have chosen not to seek reelection in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections. This decision raises concerns about a potential leadership void and its impact on parliamentary representation.

Among other MPs opting not to run again are Dan Botwe, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, Emmanuel Marfo, Benito Owusu-Bio, Carlos Ahenkora, Nana Kwasi Adjei Boateng, William Owuraku Aidoo, Johnson Adu, Francis Manu-Adabor, Suleman Sanid, Kojo Kum, and Francisca Oteng. The reasons for their decisions remain unclear, with speculations ranging from potential retirements to pursuing alternative professional opportunities or taking a break from the demanding nature of parliamentary life.

The exit of these experienced MPs underscores the importance of succession planning and grooming emerging leaders within political parties to ensure a smooth transition and effective parliamentary functioning.

  • Aston Villa end 2023 on a high after beating Burnley

Aston Villa end 2023 on a high after beating Burnley

Aston Villa moved level on points with Premier League leaders Liverpool as Douglas Luiz’s late penalty secured a 3-2 home win over 10-man Burnley.

Villa led at the break thanks to a Moussa Diaby finish after Leon Bailey’s 28th-minute opener for the hosts had been cancelled out three minutes later by Zeki Amdouni.

Burnley suffered a further setback with Sander Berge sent off early in the second half, but it looked as if it could prove a frustrating afternoon for Villa after Lyle Foster drew things level again in the 71st minute.

Luiz then had the final say, converting from the spot with a minute of normal time remaining, as Unai Emery’s side moved up a place to second in the table, joining Liverpool on 42 points ahead of the Reds hosting Newcastle on New Year’s Day.

The 26th league win of their superb 2023 under Emery saw the midlands outfit bounce back from the 3-2 Boxing Day loss at Manchester United, with normal service resumed at Villa Park after the 1-1 draw with Sheffield United on December 22 had ended a club-record run of 15 consecutive home league wins.

Vincent Kompany’s Burnley, meanwhile, remain second-bottom, five points adrift of safety.

Villa had a couple of opportunities in the opening quarter-hour, with Diaby sending a volley wide and another from Ollie Watkins saved by James Trafford.

Burnley were then forced into an early change as Jordan Beyer was replaced by Hannes Delcroix, before starting to show some threat as Josh Brownhill struck wide and quickly brought a save out of Emiliano Martinez.

Within moments Villa were ahead, Watkins cutting into the box from the left and laying the ball to Bailey who took a touch and fired past Trafford via a deflection.

The lead proved short-lived, with Burnley hitting back almost immediately through Amdouni’s hooked effort after Dara O’Shea had headed a free-kick across goal.

The visitors then had the ball in the net again in the 37th minute, but Foster’s finish was ruled out for offside.

Villa regained the advantage five minutes later with Watkins again the creator, the England striker fashioning the cut-back from which Diaby turned the ball home.

Following Foster and Amdouni efforts saved by Martinez either side of the interval, Burnley were reduced to 10 men in the 56th minute when Berge collected a second yellow card having tugged at the shirt of Luiz.

Diaby curled over soon after before Foster prodded wide following a possible handball by Diego Carlos just outside the box that brought no action from referee Stuart Attwell.

Villa cranked up the pressure as Trafford denied John McGinn and Diaby before Luiz, Jacob Ramsey and Diaby, twice, shot off target.

The hosts were then left ruing that as Foster held off Alex Moreno and fired in for his first goal since returning to action after an eight-match absence in which he had been receiving care for his mental health.

It appeared as if Villa’s wastefulness might cost them, but as stoppage time drew near a challenge by former Villa man Aaron Ramsey on fellow substitute Jhon Duran prompted Attwell to point to the spot and Luiz converted the penalty with a shot that bounced down off the bar to ensure a fine calendar year ended on a high for Emery’s team.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will celebrate the 42nd anniversary of the 31st December Revolution today, December 31, 2023, at Ashaley Botwe old town park, Adenta, in the Greater Accra Region.

The event is expected to be characterized by the lighting of the perpetual flame, laying of wreaths, and a durbar.

  • Gibbs-White fire Nottingham Forest to first victory against Man United

Gibbs-White fire Nottingham Forest to first victory against Man United

Morgan Gibbs-White fired Nottingham Forest to a first victory against Manchester United since 1994 as Erik ten Hag’s side ended a topsy-turvy year with a whimper.

The Red Devils had won the sides’ last 11 meetings in all competitions, but new boss Nuno Espirito Santo would celebrate a memorable second win in just five days.

Gibbs-White’s super late strike from the edge of the box wrapped up a memorable 2-1 triumph after Marcus Rashford had capitalised on a terrible Matt Turner pass to cancel out Nicolas Dominguez’s opener.

This was United’s 14th defeat in all competitions this term and a miserable end to the year for a side that were a pale imitation of the one that roared back to beat Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

Match-winner Rasmus Hojlund was absent through illness and Ten Hag’s team underperformed at the City Ground, where a forgettable first half made way for a pulsating second period.

Rodriguez fired Forest ahead in the 64th minute, only for under-fire Turner to see a poor pass cut out as Rashford went on to rifle home a 78th-minute leveller.

But the goalkeeper helped make amends four minutes later, denying Christian Eriksen before the hosts raced up the field and Gibbs-White slammed the hosts back ahead.

Turner held firm in stoppage time to ensure Forest beat United at home for the first time since 1992.

INEOS director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford was an interested observer alongside Sir Alex Ferguson on the banks of the Trent, where Kobbie Mainoo heading away an early Dominguez attempt.

Chris Wood, brimming with confidence after his hat-trick at Newcastle on Boxing Day, drove off target before United survived an 11th-minute scare.

Former United talent Anthony Elanga drove a cross in front the left and Raphael Varane’s awkward attempt to cut it out took it over helpless Andre Onana and across the face of goal.

The Forest faithful bellowed “you’re not famous anymore” as their side continued in the ascendancy, thanks in no small part to United’s poor decision making and passing.

The home side crowded out Ten Hag’s men in attacking areas, just as they did when Aaron Wan-Bissaka saw a shot blocked shortly after Ryan Yates scooped over at the other end.

A forgettable first half limped on until the break, when Scott McTominay replaced Mainoo.

Ten Hag would also take off Antony in the 54th minute to Forest chants of “what a waste of money” as Amad Diallo made his first United appearance in two years.

A minute later, misfiring United nearly went ahead through the unlikely source of Diogo Dalot. The full-back’s first-time drive from distance came back off the right-hand post.

But, in truth, Forest had emerged from half-time with more bite to their play and the City Ground was rocking in the 64th minute.

Elanga played into right-back Gonzalo Montiel, who followed an expert touch with a smart cutback for compatriot Dominguez to stroke a right-footed effort into the bottom corner.

It was an excellent strike that sparked chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” being aimed at Ten Hag.

Alejandro Garnacho sent an acrobatic effort into the ground and onto the roof of the net as United sought a leveller that Turner was soon relieved not to gift them.

The Forest goalkeeper’s miskick flew up in the air but bounced back to him. His blushes would not be spared for long, though.

Turner saw a lax pass out from the back cut out by Garnacho, who squared for Rashford to level in the 78th minute.

Forest fans went ballistic after the goalkeeper’s latest error and there were murmurs when he next touched the ball.

But Turner atoned his earlier mistake by stopping Eriksen, which sparked a Forest break. Elanga squared for Gibbs-White and the man of the match curled beyond Onana into the bottom corner.

The stadium erupted, just as it did midway through 10 minutes of stoppage time when Turner brilliantly tipped over a deflected Fernandes volley.

Amad was also denied before the final whistle saw players collapse to the turf.

The Ministry of Works and Housing is set to sell its low-cost houses in Tamale to willing buyers in fulfilment of what it says is Government policy.

In a letter dated November 8, 2023, and signed by the Acting Chief Director of the Ministry sighted by MyNewsGh.com, the evaluation of two of such houses is requested from the Land Valuation Division of the Lands Commission to enable the Ministry of Works and Housing to ascertain the true value of the houses and sell them out.

  • Many players will be back in the new year and they will strengthen the team – Ten Hag after United’s defeat

Many players will be back in the new year and they will strengthen the team – Ten Hag after United’s defeat

Erik ten Hag remains optimistic that key players returning from injury will help him solve the ongoing issues at Manchester United.

The Red Devils slumped to a 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest in their final match of 2023, Morgan Gibbs-White netting a late winner on the counter after Marcus Rashford had cancelled out Nicolas Dominguez’s second-half opener.

United have now lost 14 matches in all competitions this season and the last time they suffered more before the turn of the year was way back in 1930-31.

But Ten Hag believes an easing of the current injury crisis at Old Trafford will allow his side to be more consistent in the second half of the campaign.

The Dutchman told BBC Radio 5 Live: “We have to make our performances consistent and have to do better. A game is 90 minutes and we have to invest from the first minute on.

“We are hopeful that many players will be back in the new year and they will strengthen the team and the squad.

“We know the reasons why it is not working. No team can deal with all the issues and injuries that we have had.

“We should still have done better and we have depth in the squad. When you have so many injuries, the depth is not enough.”

United were without Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, Mason Mount, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Sofyan Amrabat and Anthony Martial for the trip to the City Ground, while Rasmus Hojlund was also taken ill shortly before the match.

Christian Eriksen believes the Red Devils’ season has been a case of “one step forward two steps back”, but like his manager, he remains confident things will improve in the new year.

The Denmark international said: “Things will heal and get better. There’s only one way forward and that’s to work hard.

“Sometimes it goes against us. As a footballer you want the best game every day but the only way to do that is to work.”

You have no plan for the future of this country – NPP tells Mahama over WASSCE results brouhaha

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly criticized the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, following his comments on the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) results.

During his country tour, Mr. Mahama discredited the examination results, pointing to malpractices and students conniving with teachers to cheat.

In response to the former president, the NPP Deputy Youth Organizer, Sandra Sarkodee-Addo, criticized Mr. Mahama for failing to appreciate the achievements of the candidates.

She urged the former president, “To credit the Ghanaian youth with some considerable amount of intelligence when given the platform to speak. He is at least a former president and a considered statesman, and must live with respect to his office. In 2024, John Mahama must be a changed man, devoid of antics in attempt to trick Ghanaians into believing he has anything new to offer the country.”

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in a Facebook post, also responded to the issue and offered words of encouragement to students, particularly the 2023 WASSCE candidates, urging them not to let anyone diminish their achievements.

In his post, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that not everyone comprehends the challenges faced by intelligent students, praising their accomplishments as a result of hard work.

  • Ronaldo tops Saudi Golden Boot race

Ronaldo tops Saudi Golden Boot race

After a summer of lavish spending, the Saudi Pro League is in full swing and some of the high-profile arrivals are already strutting their stuff in the Middle East.

With the division now on a winter break until February, we take a look at how the division’s Golden Boot race is shaping up.

Cristiano Ronaldo has enjoyed an incredible start to the season with Al-Nassr, notching 20 goals in just 18 appearances. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner scored a hat-trick against Al-Fateh in August and has also bagged a quartet of braces, failing to score in only four matches this term. Ronaldo has nine assists to his name too, the joint-highest tally in the division.

Aleksandar Mitrovic has taken no time to find his feet in Saudi Arabia. The Serbian striker joined current leaders Al-Hilal from Fulham in August and has scored 17 times in as many league appearances. He netted a memorable hat-trick against Al-Ittihad back in September to secure a priceless 4-3 win.

Former Tottenham winger Georges-Kevin N’Koudou is enjoying a stunning season with Damac and will be hoping to shine for Cameroon at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. The 28-year-old has scored 14 goals in 17 appearances and netted a hat-trick in a 4-2 win over Abha in November. N’Koudou has only failed to score in seven league matches this term and also boasts four assists to his name.

Saudi Arabia striker Firas Al-Buraikan started the season brightly with Al-Fateh, netting four times in five appearances. The 23-year-old then joined Al-Ahli in September and has continued to deliver the goods in the final third, adding seven more goals to his tally in 12 appearances. His impressive displays have even kept ex-Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino out of the Jeddah-based side’s starting XI.

Brazilian maestro Anderson Talisca missed four of Al-Nassr’s first five games of the season but has returned to full fitness with a bang. The ex-Benfica ace has scored 11 goals in 14 appearances, including a run of eight goals in six matches between September and October. Talisca boasts a superb record of 63 goals from 81 matches in all competitions since joining Al-Nassr in May 2021.

  • “We will introduce an additional holiday to the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr” – Mahama pledges

“We will introduce an additional holiday to the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr” – Mahama pledges

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has pledged to grant the Muslims in Ghana an additional Eid holiday if elected in 2024.

He expressed concern about some Muslims missing out on the public holiday at the end of Ramadan due to the 29 or 30-day rule for moon sightings.

Mr. Mahama, addressing the 63rd Annual National Conference of the Ghana Muslim Mission in Kumasi on Friday, December 29, stated that he would ensure this adjustment doesn’t adversely affect productivity.

He emphasized the intention to modify the Public Holidays Act to maintain the same number of public holidays per year in Ghana.

“We aim to address the issue where some of our Muslim community members are unable to enjoy the public holiday at the end of Ramadan due to the 29 or 30-day rule for sighting the moon.”

“To do this, we will introduce an additional holiday to the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr. We will, however, ensure that this does not affect productivity by modifying the Public Holidays Act so that Ghana continues to have the same number of public holidays per year.”

This comes after the Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, introduced a new bill aiming to amend the country’s Public Holidays Act 2001, Act 601.

The proposed amendment includes the addition of two Islamic public holidays, Tashreeq (a day after the Eid-al-Adha Festival) and Shaqq (a day before the Eid-al-Fitr).

The bill was submitted to the Clerk of Parliament on November 29, 2023, and is currently in the processing stage.

According to Sosu, the amendment aims to create a more progressive, productive, and inclusive society by extending the public holidays for Muslims from one day to two days for each Islamic festivity.

“The right of every Ghanaian to freedom of religion is a fundamental one. In Article 21(c) every Ghanian has the freedom to practice any religion and to manifest any religion. Being the 2nd dominant religion in Ghana, Ghanaian Muslims must have equal opportunities when it comes to the celebration of religious festivals.”

“After 40 days of mandatory religious obligation of fasting, practitioners of Islamic Religion deserve an additional day for rest and to prepare for full activities,” he said.

“The religious significance of these holidays is to afford Muslims the opportunity to fully manifest and observe their faith, and offer gratitude to Allah for all that He has done, granted them, and continues to do; as well as for them to fully place and restore their trust in Allah and His abundant care, Grace and wisdom,” he added.

May 2024 inspire renewed hope, optimism, and a collective vision in building the Ghana we want – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has extended its warm wishes to Ghanaians as they bid farewell to 2023.

According to the party, the country faced a year marked by economic hardships inflicted by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

In a press statement signed by the General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, and released on Sunday, December 31, the NDC stated that it acknowledges the difficulties faced under the current administration, however, “we embrace the hope that 2024, being an election year, brings forth the chance for positive change.”

The party further admonishes Ghanaians to recognize the 2024 general elections as an opportunity to shape a brighter future and address the challenges imposed by the NPP government.

“As we stand at the threshold of a crucial election year, may it inspire renewed hope, optimism, and a collective vision in building the Ghana we want.

“Together, let us navigate the path of change, building a nation that thrives on the principles of democracy, equality, and justice,” the NDC said.

“Exceptionally courageous” – Ablakwa congratulates Afua Asantewaa for successfully completing sing-a-thon Guinness World Record attempt

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has congratulated Afua Asantewaa for attempting to break the current record for the longest individual singing marathon.

Afua Asantewaa Owusu Aduonum, the Ghanaian women’s rights advocate, journalist, and event organizer, on Friday concluded her captivating singing marathon Guinness World Record attempt after an impressive 126 hours and 52 minutes.

In a Facebook post on December 30, Mr Ablakwa noted that he is excited a courageous woman would step up to break a world record and in so doing, unite Ghanaians.

He wrote: “It’s such a great feeling when a fellow Ghanaian breaks a world record and sets her own record in the process — more so, when it’s a feat achieved by an exceptionally courageous woman from a relatively small country of 32 million people, breaking the Guiness World Record set by Sunil Waghmare, a man from a mighty 1.4billion populated India.

“The patriotic and unifying support from all Ghanaians regardless of artificial strictures must be highly commended. That is testament that when we come together, we are unstoppable and unbreakable.

“I wish Afua Asantewaa a successful reign — may she bring more glory to herself and our dear nation, and become an ambassador of great renown.”

While the verification process from Guinness World Record judges is still pending, Ghanaians are anxiously awaiting the official statement.

The suspense intensified when a Ghanaian named Abrantie Kwasi Gyamfi tagged the awarding body in a Facebook post, prompting them that Ghana is ready to join the ranks.

In response, Guinness World Records conveyed:

“Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are aware of Afua Aduonum’s feat, and we eagerly await the evidence to officially crown her as the world’s new individual singing marathon champion.”

“Hi Abrantie, we look forward to receiving evidence, this event certainly seems to have captured the public’s imagination.”

    Below is Ablakwa’s congratulatory message.

Even though my attention has been focused on supervising the rapid construction of resettlement homes for my beloved displaced constituents, I wish to take a moment to congratulate the inspirational Afua Asantewaa Aduonum on her historic sing-a-thon journey.

It’s such a great feeling when a fellow Ghanaian breaks a world record and sets her own record in the process — more so, when it’s a feat achieved by an exceptionally courageous woman from a relatively small country of 32 million people, breaking the Guiness World Record set by Sunil Waghmare, a man from a mighty 1.4billion populated India.

The patriotic and unifying support from all Ghanaians regardless of artificial strictures must be highly commended. That is testament that when we come together, we are unstoppable and unbreakable.

I wish Afua Asantewaa a successful reign — may she bring more glory to herself and our dear nation, and become an ambassador of great renown.

‘Our mysterious friend celebrates his second birthday this year’ – Ablakwa teases Kusi Boateng

North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has celebrated the birthday of one of his legal ‘adversaries’ in the year 2023.

Despite Victor Kusi Boateng filing two cases against Ablakwa this year, the lawmaker posted a birthday message to the National Cathedral Board of Trustees secretary on December 30, 2023; one of his two different birthdays.

The message captioned: “Happy birthday to a global living legend,” rehashed Ablakwa’s publications about how Kusi Boateng also known separately as Kwabena Adu Gyamfi was operation double identity as established by the courts.

The lawmaker also reiterated his allegations of financial impropriety against the prophet mocking him in the process.

“Despite his failed unholy legal machinations earlier this year to have me gagged and imprisoned, I genuinely wish him happy dual birthday celebrations in total freedom,” the post read in part.

“As our mysterious friend celebrates his second birthday this year, I do look forward to more interesting legal battles in the coming year, seeing that he refuses to give up as only a few weeks ago the courts threw out his desperate applications to set aside the damning judgments against him.

“Nobody fights the TRUTH and wins. For God and Country. Ghana First,” the post concluded.

Happy birthday to a global living legend.

Today is the day Ghana’s mystical Prophet Victor Kusi Boateng transmogrifies as Kwabena Adu Gyamfi who was born on December 30, 1969 — nearly two years prior to the paranormal birth of Victor Kusi Boateng on September 7, 1971 to a different mother.

Despite his failed unholy legal machinations earlier this year to have me gagged and imprisoned, I genuinely wish him happy dual birthday celebrations in total freedom.

Ghanaians expect that in 2024, we shall have our GHS2.6million refunded to us at the prevailing value following that infamous, sacrilegious and unlawful payment by the Prophet Victor Kusi Boateng National Cathedral Board of Trustees to Kwabena Adu Gyamfi’s JNS Talent Centre Limited for absolutely no work done.

As the courts have unambiguously affirmed my unimpeachable parliamentary investigative findings — Ghanaians also expect that in 2024, Prophet Victor Kusi Boateng/Kwabena Adu Gyamfi will reveal his true identity and purge himself. Even if he won’t do that which is extremely unusual for someone who professes to be a prophet of God; he ought to be reminded about the fact that he is a public official appointed by President Akufo-Addo to serve on the National Cathedral Board of Trustees for which he has been issued a Diplomatic Passport, albeit under shady circumstances, to facilitate his international engagements in our name — so as a public official he is accountable to the people of Ghana.

As our mysterious friend celebrates his second birthday this year, I do look forward to more interesting legal battles in the coming year, seeing that he refuses to give up as only a few weeks ago the courts threw out his desperate applications to set aside the damning judgments against him.

Nobody fights the TRUTH and wins.

Hundreds throng Atwea mountains to fortify themselves for 2024, bid farewell to 2023

A video circulating on social media shows how some Ghanaians are preparing to welcome the New Year, 2024.

Hundreds are captured in the open on top of the famous Atwea mountains as they seek divine intercession with days to 2024.

While scores are captured sleeping under blankets on the mountain, others are sighted praying while there is also some amount of movement on the rugged surface.

On social media, there is a debate on why people should resort to prayers in such conditions to welcome the new year.

The opponents argue that if others opt to attend the many musical concerts across the country and even pay huge sums to gain access, then those who choose the mountain-top are well within their right so to do.

The mountain has become one of the most popular and patronized prayer mountains in Ghana. Not only for religious reasons, but the place has also become one of the popular tourist sites in the Ashanti region.

Atwea Mountain, which is located in Atwea in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti region, was first discovered by a Methodist priest, Rev Abraham Osei Assibey in 1964.

Even though the mountain is called Atwea, it is situated in the Abaasua community.

  • Parliament petitioned to review Emission Levy Bill as GPRTU threatens 60% hike in transport fares

Parliament petitioned to review Emission Levy Bill as GPRTU threatens 60% hike in transport fares

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced that it submitted a proposal to Parliament for the reconsideration of the Emission Levy Bill, scheduled for implementation in 2024.

The Emissions Levy Bill, approved by Parliament, imposes an annual charge of GH¢100 on all owners of petrol and diesel cars, starting from January 2024.

The government’s objective with this tax is to encourage the use of environmentally friendly energy sources for vehicle power, aligning with its commitment to climate-positive actions and carbon offset initiatives.

The Union has expressed concerns about the bill, asserting that it will add to the excessive tax burden on the transport sector.

Consequently, the union has threatened to increase fares by not less than 60 percent.

The Minority in Parliament had earlier opposed the passage of the Bill.

In an interview with Citi News, the Industrial Relations Officer for GPRTU, Abass Imoro, expressed hope that the outcome of the proposal would be positive.

“We will officially resume on January 12, 2024, from the Christmas break, so we are hopeful that by the time we resume, we might have received a letter from Parliament. In an institution like Parliament, you can’t write to them, and they will overlook it; definitely, we shall hear from them. When we hear from them, then we continue from there. Let’s all hope for the best because the country is for all of us, and we all wish to live happily. If you say pollution, and you say emission somewhere, I think it’s the grammar that has been changed. It all means the same thing, so we are creating awareness that we are already paying something on that,” Abass Imoro said.

  • The law allows Controller and Accountant-General to contest NPP Primaries while in office – Richard Ahiagbah

The law allows Controller and Accountant-General to contest NPP Primaries while in office – Richard Ahiagbah

The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has downplayed calls for the Controller and Accountant-General, Mr Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem, to resign before contesting the party’s parliamentary primaries.

He said there was no specific rule currently that barred the Controller and Accountant-General from contesting a political office while holding on to his current position.

Mr Kwaning-Bosompem is seeking to lead the NPP as its Parliamentary Candidate in the Akim Swedru Constituency in the Eastern Region in the coming 2024 general election.

However, since news of his decision to contest the seat broke, there have been many calls from some political parties, political commentators, and civil servants, including the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), for him to vacate the position as the Controller and Accountant-General.

Speaking on Accra-based TV3’s “The Key Points” programme, on Saturday, Mr Ahiagba rejected such calls, indicating that the position of the Controller and Accountant-General was a “unique” one.

He argued that Mr Kwaning-Bosompem’s position was different from that of ministers, Members of Parliament, or district chief executives, who were in roles that required constant partisan political decisions.

According to him, the current Controller and Accountant-General was “not a civil servant in the true sense of the word” because he was a government appointee.

Therefore, Mr Ahiagbah insisted the Controller and Accountant-General needed not to resign before contesting for any political position. He explained that the Controller and Accountant-General was a technical and professional position that did not involve political decisions.

“There is no doubt about rendering the position of the law, I think there is no dispute about that, but what I’m saying is that we have a unique situation in this Controller and Accountant-General position where technically, he was out of the civil service and brought back in. All the examinations that we are talking about, none of them conform to his particular situation.

“If anybody wants to parallel what ruling exists to say that, therefore, he resigns, I’m saying that there is a unique instance. Perhaps, the Supreme Court can give a ruling,” he said.

Mr Ahiagbah added that “he [Controller and Accountant-General] has gone out [of civil service] and come in by an appointment. So, technically, he is not a civil servant in the true sense of the word, he is a government appointee based on that.

“There is no rule currently that deals with his position in terms of any ruling.”

Mr Bobby Banson, a private legal practitioner, on the same programme, insisted that the Controller and Accountant-General’s continuous stay in office while vying for a political position amounted to breaking the law.

Article 94(3) (b) of the 1992 Constitution states that; “A person shall not be eligible to be a member of Parliament if he is a member of the Police Service, the Prisons Service, the Armed Forces, the Judicial Service, the Legal Service, the Civil Service\the Audit Service, the Parliamentary Service, the Statistical Service, the Fire Service, the Customs, Excise and Preventive Service, the Immigration Service, or the internal Revenue Service.”

Mr Banson, therefore, urged the NPP to disqualify the Controller and Accountant-General from contesting the party’s parliamentary primaries if he failed to resign from his current position.

Dr Rasheed Draman, Executive Director, African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs, warned against any action that could lead to the politicisation of both the civil and public service.

“There are very good reasons why we want to keep our civil and public servants away from politics, and I think the parties must do all in their power to make sure that we don’t get to this level,” he stressed.

  • Chelsea end their four-game losing streak away from home by beating Luton

Chelsea end their four-game losing streak away from home by beating Luton

Chelsea survived a spirited late fightback by Luton to edge a dramatic match 3-2 at Kenilworth Road and end their four-game losing streak away from home.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side looked to be cruising to a first victory on the road since early November thanks to two goals from Cole Palmer – his second a sensational piece of individual skill – and one from Noni Madueke who scored for the second time in two games as the visitors took a 3-0 lead.

But that breathing room was sucked away by Luton during a frenetic final 10 minutes, when first Ross Barkley then Elijah Adebayo struck to offer their supporters hope of a spectacular recovery.

Yet Chelsea held their nerve, claiming back-to-back league wins for just the second time under Pochettino.

They had taken the lead after 12 minutes and it was a gift from Luton.

First, the defence was caught out up the pitch and allowed Nicolas Jackson to run in from the left and through on goal. His effort was saved well by the legs of Thomas Kaminski and the ball fell at the feet of Issa Kabore, who instead of clearing his lines played an inexplicable pass straight to the lurking Palmer who took a touch and lashed it home.

Luton looked to Barkley, the former Chelsea player, for a response and he nearly provided it almost instantly, hitting a free-kick from 20 yards out that curved around the wall and cleared the bar by inches.

Chelsea were on their worst run of away league defeats in 23 years, whilst Luton had just recorded back-to-back top-flight wins for the first time this season. Yet in the first half the visitors posed much the clearer threat, attacking with a directness that has often been lacking on the road.

After 37 minutes they got their second, and it was Madueke fresh from scoring the winner against Crystal Palace on Wednesday that got it.

The ball was worked from the left flank over to the right via Palmer playing in the number 10 role. He moved it on again to Madueke, whose route to goal was barred by Amari’i Bell. Luton’s captain backed off, encouraging the Chelsea winger to run outside him and find space to thump the ball high inside the near post into the top corner.

Luton’s key creative outlets, Barkley and Andros Townsend, had been largely nullified by Chelsea’s determined pressing and harrying.

Palmer slotted easily back into his role as the visitors’ principle attacking outlet after serving a one-match suspension, whilst Jackson and Armando Broja were lively and Malo Gusto looked an increasingly able deputy to the injured Reece James at right-back.

The third goal when it came on 70 minutes was well deserved.

Jackson was clever and strong in midfield to spin away from his man and play an early ball through the middle to Palmer. Kaminski raced out to meet him, but as Palmer reached it he outfoxed the Luton goalkeeper with the deftest roll of the ball beneath his studs, sat the covering Albert Sambi Lokonga down and knocked in Chelsea’s third.

Adebayo thought he had got one back when he headed in Alfie Doughty’s cross, but VAR called offside against the winger, before Adebayo headed his next chance against the bar.

There was life in Luton and they proved it with two goals in seven minutes to stun Chelsea.

First, Barkley headed what looked a consolation from a corner, then Adebayo reacted quickest to turn the ball home after Djordje Petrovic had saved from Doughty.

Luton pushed and pushed in the closing minutes but a determined Chelsea held firm.

Angry youth destroy ECG meters belonging to COCOBOD over death of 2 footballers at Yadzo

The agitated youth, who previously staged a protest at the office and residence of the District Chief Executive for Kadjebi, Wilson Agbanyo, over the death of two youngsters, have vandalized the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) office at Papase in the Oti Region.

The ECG meters supplying power to the facility, along with other lighting installations, have been vandalised.

The cause of the attack is unclear, but it is believed to be linked to recent protests and disturbances in the area related to the death of the two youngsters from Yadzo.

The Ministry of National Security has refuted allegations of intentionally targeting and causing the deaths of two individuals in the Akan Constituency within the Oti Region.

This response comes in the wake of the tragic incident in the Yadzo community of the Oti Region on Monday, where two footballers reportedly lost their lives while being pursued by National Security Operatives.

The pursuit allegedly occurred as the individuals were attempting to transport cocoa beans to Togo.

In a statement issued on December 27, the National Security Ministry explained that “the incident leading to the death of the two persons was purely accidental and not borne out of a targeted operation.”

Meanwhile, military personnel have been deployed to the district to ensure law and order following the destruction of ECG meters.

English-born Ghanaian midfielder Keenan Appiah-Forson scored in Dagenham & Redbridge’s 4-1 victory against Eastleigh on Boxing Day in the National League.

Appiah-Forson came on in the 64th minute to replace Freddie Sears at the Chigwell Construction Stadium.

Maguire’s free kick from right outside the box went just over the bar, giving the Spitfires their first meaningful opportunity of the game.

Seven minutes before halftime, Inih Effiong got the ball on the left side and curled a stunning shot into the top corner to give the Daggers the lead.

However, Nwabuokei ran down the right-hand side and the ball into the area was headed home by Barlow who was unmarked within the six-yard box to level the scores only two minutes into the second half.

Keenan Appiah-Forson, who came off the bench, would score his first goal for the Daggers halfway through the second period. He hit a beautiful effort from around 25 yards out that dropped over the keeper and smashed in off the post to restore the Daggers’ advantage.

After Inih Effiong’s wonderful touch and finish was stopped from close range, Tom Eastman would turn in to make it 3-1 to the home side.

With remarkable confidence, Inih Effiong doubled his total for the afternoon, sending the ball past the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner to give the Daggers an incredible 4-1 advantage.

The Daggers will play Eastleigh away on January 1st, 2024.

18-year-old midfielder Kofi Jeremy Amoako has emerged as the latest addition to VfL Wolfsburg’s winter training camp.

The German-born youngster, heralded by a noteworthy debut against SV Darmstadt 98, where he contributed to a 1-0 victory on the penultimate matchday before the winter break, is poised to amplify his presence within the professional squad.

As reported by Kicker, Amoako’s inclusion in Wolfsburg’s winter training camp marks a pivotal juncture in his burgeoning career.

Having recently tasted the intensity of professional football, his rapid progression is underscored by this coveted opportunity to develop his skills further and integrate seamlessly into the seasoned squad.

Amoako’s breakthrough follows consistent stellar performances for Wolfsburg’s U19 squad, where he showcased his prowess in the heart of the midfield across all 12 games in the Junior Bundesliga this season.

Such was his impact that the young midfielder earned the captaincy of the U19 team. After the winter training camp, Wolfsburg will clash with Mainz on January 13th.

“Nobody is evicting them” – Ada East DCE on rendering local salt miners homeless

The Ada East District Assembly has refuted claims made by the local miners association of Songor that the assembly would render its members homeless if they were relocated from the Songor lagoon concession.

These salt miners were instructed to vacate the Ada East sector of the Songor lagoon concession following a December 31 eviction deadline issued by the Ada East District Assembly for Electrochem Ghana’s mining operations, but they assert their intent to resist the directive.

In an interview with Citi News, the District Chief Executive of Ada East, Sarah Dugbakie Pobee, clarified that residential facilities along the concession would remain unaffected.

She assured local miners that Electrochem Ghana is prepared to provide them with whatever they need to sustain their livelihoods in the region.

“Nobody is evicting them, and they are not going to relocate anybody. The houses that are there are going to remain there forever. The ponds that they are going to create will not affect any house. So the excuse that they are giving is not valid, and I think Electrochem is ready to give them anything they want in exchange for what they are doing because they don’t want to take their livelihoods from them,” she said.

Mahama will change Ghana’s destiny with his experience as president and former president – Haruna Iddrisu

The Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has stated that former President John Dramani Mahama is returning to the presidency with massive insights that will change the fortunes of the Ghanaian economy.

He has thus made a passionate appeal to Ghanaians to vote massively for Mr. Mahama in the 2024 polls.

“I have said that former President Mahama is coming back to the throne with two important insights and one important hindsight. He has been President, and he is being outside as non-President, and he will combine the two to change the destiny of this country.”

He expressed optimism that the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) “would change the country for good.”

The former Minority Leader made these remarks on December 28 when the paramount chief of Nakpanduri, Naba David Kansuk Na Golbila II, and his sub-chiefs conferred on him a chieftaincy title, Sugru-Lana, Chief of Patience, at the palace.

He further called on the chiefs and indigenes in the area to also vote for NDC MPs to help Mr. Mahama propel the needed change in the area and Ghana as a whole.

The outspoken MP pledged his continuous support for the development of the country.

He stated, “I pledge to continue to exercise utmost restraint and patience in my attempt to contribute to the public interest and overall development of Ghana.”

Managerless Swansea gets a draw thanks to Liam Cullen’s stoppage-time free-kick

    Liam Cullen’s stoppage-time free-kick earned managerless Swansea a 2-2 draw at Coventry.

The Swans had earlier been ahead through Liam Walsh’s first goal in almost four years, before Haji Wright and Ellis Simms put Coventry 2-1 in front.

Swansea had been thrashed 5-0 by former head coach Russell Martin and Southampton on Boxing Day, but Cullen fired in a last-gasp set-piece to give his side a hard-fought point.

Former Coventry loanee Walsh put Swansea ahead in the seventh minute after he latched onto a poor touch from Jamie Allen and picked out the bottom corner, his first strike since scoring for the Sky Blues in January 2020.

It was just the ninth goal that Coventry had conceded at home this season.

They were ahead for just three minutes before Wright was played in by former Swansea loanee Kasey Palmer.

The American was confronted by Bashir Humphreys, but shifted the ball onto his left foot before arrowing his effort into the far corner beyond Carl Rushworth.

Palmer’s powerful effort was then tipped over by Rushworth in the Swansea goal before his free-kick cleared the crossbar.

Swansea had been without a permanent boss since December 4 and interim head coach Alan Sheehan handed a senior debut to 17-year-old Sam Palmer, who almost teed up Yannick Bolasie to put the Swans ahead but he could only lift over the bar with his outstretched right foot from close range.

Walsh also came close to putting Swansea ahead when he forced Brad Collins to palm away his free-kick.

Japan international Tatsuhiro Sakamoto scored a brace in Coventry’s 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Boxing Day and saw his effort blocked on the line following a clever corner routine as Coventry looked to get their noses in front.

Simms had been introduced as a substitute and scored his first goal at home for Coventry to put the hosts ahead with 25 minutes remaining.

Callum O’Hare picked out Wright at the back post and his looping header looked goalbound before Simms poked in to net his first goal since September when the former Everton striker netted a brace against QPR at Loftus Road.

Cullen had also been introduced from the bench and stepped up in the third minute of added time to whip his free-kick into the bottom corner from the edge of the box, extending Swansea’s unbeaten run against the Sky Blues to 17 matches, dating back to 1981.

People only search for better lands to evade hunger, economic disaster – Economist tells Akufo-Addo

Financial analyst and economist, Scott Bolshevik, has responded to President Akufo-Addo‘s recent plea, advising African youth against pursuing perceived opportunities in Europe or America, terming it the ‘mirage’ of a better life.

After addressing the Full Circle Africa Economic Conference in Accra on Thursday, December 28, President Akufo-Addo stressed the importance of collective efforts to transform Africa into a continent of investment, progress, and prosperity. He discouraged the prevailing trend of African youth leaving their homeland in search of a supposedly better life abroad.

“We must help make Africa the place for investment, progress and prosperity, and not from where our youth flee in the hope of accessing the mirage of a better life in Europe or the Americas.

“We want to derive maximum dividends from our relations with the African Diaspora in mutually beneficial co-operation, and as partners for shared growth and development,” he said.

According to him, “only at times of war, hunger, or economic disaster have people moved in search of better lands throughout human history.

In a post on December 29, Mr. Bolshevik emphasized that all indications suggest that any country encountering such a problem is currently a failed state, attributing this to the government’s failure to make the right decisions to deter the mass exodus of its citizens.

A fire broke out in Kyiribaa, a suburb of Berekum in the Bono Region, engulfing three bedrooms, a kitchen, a store, and a bathroom.

The incident left over 10 tenants homeless. The fire started at dawn, and although Nora Agyei Yamoah, a witness, quickly informed her grandmother, the fire had already spread significantly by the time they sought help from the fire service.

Some tenants lost everything in their rooms, and there are concerns about the frequent power outages in the area (dumsor) possibly contributing to the fire outbreak.

The Fire Service is investigating the cause.
