‘Presecan’ seeks to amend brother’s ‘mistakes’ in 2019 NSMQ grand finale this year

In the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) grand finale, one of the contestants from Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (PRESEC) has a personal mission.

The finalists for this year’s competition include Mortey Selinam Kofi, Samuel, and Partey.

For Mortey Selinam Kofi, this final contest carries a personal significance as he aims to correct the past mistakes of his older brother from four years ago.

In 2019, PRESEC competed against St Augustine’s College and St Peter’s Senior Secondary School. Mortey Selasie Komla Ansah was one of the finalists representing PRESEC.

Unfortunately, PRESEC lost to St Augustine’s College. Now, Mortey Selinam Kofi has the opportunity to redeem his brother and bring pride to his family and school.

This time, PRESEC’s competitors are not St Augustine’s College and St Peter’s Senior Secondary School but Opoku Ware School and Achimota School.

  • 1992 Constitution’s failure to acknowledge Ga Mantse, Yaa-Naa, others like Asantehene is discriminatory – Dormaahene

1992 Constitution’s failure to acknowledge Ga Mantse, Yaa-Naa, others like Asantehene is discriminatory – Dormaahene

Dormaahene, Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu II, has pointed out a flaw in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, stating that including the name of the Asantehene in the constitution was an error.

He emphasized that the constitution’s failure to include other chiefs with equivalent status, such as the Yagbonwura and Yaa-Naa, is discriminatory.

These chiefs, like the Asantehene, have paramount chiefs under them, yet none of them were acknowledged in the Constitution.

“The other time I was reported to have said that I have issues with the name Asantehene. But I didn’t say that. What I said is that if you look at the Chieftaincy Act, Section 58 onwards, shows the various chiefs in Ghana: Paramount Chiefs (Omanhenes) and the Asantehene; Divisional Chiefs, Sub-divisional Chiefs and chiefs accepted by the National House of Chiefs.

“So, what I saying is that how did Otumfuo’s name get to ‘A’? If something is labelled ‘A’ does it mean that it’s greater? His name should not have been there in the first place, why did they put his name there?” he quizzed in the Twi dialect.

Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu II asserted that if the name of the Asantehene is included in the Constitution, then the names of all chiefs with paramount chiefs under them should also be added to the Constitution.

“What I am saying is that he is not the only chief who has Omanhenes under him in Ghana. Yagbonwura has paramount chiefs under him; my own father Nayiri, the leader of the Mamprugu Kingdom, has paramount chiefs under him; not only him, my own father Yaa-Naa has paramount chiefs under him, the Ga Manste has same.

“So, if you are adding people to the records (Constitution) who have paramount chiefs under them why did you not add the names of these four chiefs, I have mentioned? If you don’t add it is discriminatory. So, all I am saying is that if you will put someone’s name there then add the names of the four chiefs I have mentioned,” he said.

The Dormaahene further emphasized that there is no singular king in Ghana. He elaborated that if Ghana were to have a king, that individual should be the monarch of the entire nation, similar to the monarchy in the United Kingdom and Morocco, rather than being limited to ruling over a specific region of the country.

  • Ridiculous! Why would Bawumia offer you $800m to step down from presidential race you’d lose – Gideon Boako to Ken Agyapong

Ridiculous! Why would Bawumia offer you $800m to step down from presidential race you’d lose – Gideon Boako to Ken Agyapong

The campaign team of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has outrightly rejected claims by Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, that their candidate offered him $800 million to withdraw from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race slated for November 4, 2023.

In an interview with Time FM, Mr Agyapong said, “Does he know the number of people who have approached me but for the love of Ghana and the delegates I have said I will never do it?

“The money they offered is $800 million, if he doesn’t know. He should ask Mr Oppong Bio, if that is what they are saying but I said no I will not step down, Ghana first.

“In 2016, you people were not able to buy pickups. How come today you are able to offer me $800 million? So I said I won’t step down…” he stated.

Reacting to this, Dr Gideon Boako, the spokesperson for the Vice President in a press statement noted that the Dr Bawumia, since he entered the NPP race, has not privately met Mr Agyapong and neither has he nor his camp met the Assin Central MP to “negotiate anything in respect of this contest.”

“The Vice President and his team consider this $800 million claim as absolutely ridiculous, and it shows gross disregard for the intelligence of Ghanaians,” the statement added.

According to the camp, this is so because “Dr. Bawumia is, and has always been confident that by the Grace of God, he will defeat Hon. Kennedy Agyapong quite well on November 4th” thus” has never entertained any wish for him to step down from the contest.”

“It is instructive to note that the latest allegation by Kennedy Agyapong, is a rehash of a similar allegation he made about a month ago, claiming without proof, that he was offered money to step down and be a running mate to Dr. Bawumia – a baseless claim we publicly denied on September 30, 2023.”

“The Vice President is a man noted for his modesty, and he remains committed to his life-long values of serving people with his intellect. While urging the public to disregard such outrageous lies, directed subtly at the Bawumia Campaign, we also reiterate Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to running a decent campaign devoid of personality attacks, lies, and insults to preserve the unity of our great party,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, Mr Agyapong’s comments have been scrutinized by some X users who believe it is absurd such an offer will be made. According to them, the amount being mentioned is gargantuan. They even believe, Elon Musk said to be the wealthiest man in the world would not make such a proposal.

One X user, @JefferyAnkamah wrote: “I am not a political activist but, I can’t just believe this political gimmick! Even, Elon Musk won’t reimburse a person with this enormous container money! We’re talking about 800 million! Money that’s closer to 1 billion can never be a caricature!”

Toxicology tests being undertaken to obtain Matthew Perry’s cause of death

The cause of Matthew Perry’s death remains uncertain, and it has been “deferred” pending further investigation.

Reports from the LA Times and TMZ, which initially broke the news of the Friends actor’s passing, indicated that he was discovered unresponsive in a hot tub at his residence on Saturday.

Although a post-mortem examination yielded inconclusive results, officials are awaiting the outcome of toxicology tests.

An LA Police spokesperson confirmed to CBS News that there were no apparent signs of trauma.

The LA County Medical Examiner’s office updated their file on Sunday to say the case had been deferred.

This usually means that the post-mortem is complete but more detail is needed.

On Sunday, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department informed the BBC that first responders had been dispatched to an address in the Pacific Palisades area due to a “water emergency” of an unspecified nature but did not disclose Matthew Perry’s name.

Matthew Perry, the renowned actor who portrayed the wisecracking Chandler Bing on the immensely popular ’90s TV sitcom Friends, passed away at the age of 54.

Friends, a show that followed the lives of six young friends living in New York City, was broadcast from 1994 until 2004. Its final episode attracted 52.5 million viewers in the United States, making it the most-watched TV episode of the 2000s.

Despite his fame, Perry grappled with addiction to painkillers and alcohol during that time and sought treatment in rehabilitation centers on several occasions.

In a 2016 interview with BBC Radio 2, he disclosed that he could not recollect three years of filming Friends due to issues related to alcohol and drugs.

Victims of military brutality in Garu must be compensated – MP

The Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Garu Constituency in the Upper East Region, Albert Alalzuuga Akuka, is calling for compensation for residents who claim to have suffered military brutality on Saturday, October 28, 2023.

In his comments to Citi News regarding the incident, the Garu MP has urged the government to not only conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter but also ensure that those who claim to be victims receive appropriate compensation.

“All these are things the government needs to investigate and come out with a good report on, and possibly compensate the victims for the injuries they have suffered. They should take care of their bills,” he said.

Reports suggest that a group of military personnel conducted a dawn raid on Garu, during which they allegedly assaulted residents.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has defended their actions and refuted claims of assault, alleging that irate youth in the area had initially attacked national security operatives, prompting the military response.

Nevertheless, various images shared on social media following the incident reveal evidence of whip marks on individuals, as well as bruised and swollen faces, among other injuries.

  • National Peace Council denies bribery allegation in Nogokpo vs Agyinasare saga

National Peace Council denies bribery allegation in Nogokpo vs Agyinasare saga

The National Peace Council (NPC) has challenged Nufialaga Mawufemor Kobla Nornyigbey, the spokesperson of the Nogokpo Traditional Council, over his allegations that certain chiefs involved in mediating the dispute between Perez Chapel Founder, Bishop Charles Agyinasare, and Nogokpo, were influenced by bribes from the Council.

On Thursday, October 26, media reports circulated Nornyigbey’s claims that Torgbiga Adamah III, the Paramount Chief of Some Traditional Area and President of the Some Traditional Council, had been compromised following a visit from the NPC.

Furthermore, Nornyigbey advocated for the dissolution of the NPC, contending that the Council’s actions did not align with the pursuit of peace.

But the NPC has dismissed Nornyigbey’s assertions, labelling them as “not only false and unsubstantiated but totally unconscionable.”

In a response statement, the Council clarified that its primary aim was to engage all relevant parties in order to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the conflict that stemmed from Agyinasare’s characterization of “Nogokpo as the demonic headquarters of the Volta Region” in May 2023.

The Council outlined that it initiated discussions with the Chief of Nogokpo, Torgbi Saba V, on June 5, 2023, and provided him with a “conflicts complaint form.” Torgbi Saba V completed the form and returned it on June 9, 2023.

Furthermore, the NPC disclosed that on June 29, 2023, an eight-member delegation from the NPC convened a meeting with the Some Traditional Council. This meeting was led by Torgbiga Adamah III and his 13-member Traditional Council team, including Torgbi Saba V of Nogokpo and Torgbi Atsu-Gledza of Nogokpo-Agbakofe.

The NPC firmly denied the presence of Nufialaga Mawufemor Nornyigbey at the meeting, emphasizing that it was an open gathering with over twenty attendees. The Council categorically refuted any claims of a private or separate meeting with Torgbiga Adamah III.

As a result, the NPC has urged Nufialaga Mawufemor Nornyigbey to issue a retraction and extend an apology for his erroneous and detrimental statements.

  • Corporal punishment must be reinstated in schools – Sunyani Technical University VC

Corporal punishment must be reinstated in schools – Sunyani Technical University VC

The Vice-Chancellor of Sunyani Technical University, Ing. Prof. Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah, has called for the reinstatement of corporal punishment in schools. He attributes the increasing incidents of student indiscipline to the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) 2017 ban on all forms of corporal punishment.

Addressing the audience at the 63rd Speech and Prize-Giving Day of Sunyani Senior High School, Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah expressed his concerns regarding the lack of discipline observed in many schools across the nation.

He pointed out that this lack of discipline is linked to unchecked deviant behaviors among students, including smoking, alcoholism, armed robbery, and hooliganism.

“The current situation is not helping very much because when the government took away or withdrew corporal punishment from school system, there has been laxity in the system. And the children may do anything and go scot-free. So I believe that government should look at corporal punishment again. I’m sure many people have mentioned it in the past.

“But government needs to reconsider its decision on corporal punishment and bring it back but monitor it that it should become the last resort. Bad characters are due to peer pressure. How do we monitor and guide the children in school before they complete,” The Vice-Chancellor of the Sunyani Technical University queried.

Vice-Chancellor of Sunyani Technical University, Ing. Prof. Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah

In 2019, the Ghana Education Service (GES) issued a directive that prohibited teachers from using corporal punishment, primarily caning, on their students. The ban on corporal punishment by the GES mandated all schools to implement a revised disciplinary approach and alternative disciplinary measures for addressing behavioral issues among pupils and students in educational institutions.

The toolkit indicated that “apart from the physical pain corporal punishment inflicts on children, this approach also causes significant emotional damage. Some of the lasting effects of this method of disciplining school children include physical scars, emotional scars (trauma, fear, timidity etc.) and violent behaviour.”

Ghanaians and key stakeholders in the education sector had diverse responses to the subject, which garnered national attention due to the debates surrounding its advantages and disadvantages.

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) advised its members to adhere to the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) directive, which prohibits them from administering corporal punishment to students. The association emphasized that strict compliance with the order would be in the best interest of teachers, helping them avoid any potential punitive actions by the GES.

Angel Carbonu, President of NAGRAT, who supports the use of corporal punishment for disciplining students, urged teachers to be cautious regarding the potential consequences that the GES might impose in cases of non-compliance.

According to Rt. Rev. Samuel K. Osabutey, Diocesan Bishop of Accra, Methodist Church, Ghana, Ghana faces a significant risk of deteriorating discipline in schools and society as a whole if the Ghana Education Service continues to ease restrictions on caning, also known as corporal punishment. Rt. Rev. Samuel Osabutey believes that implementing a complete ban on caning would be counterproductive and have severe consequences on overall student discipline.

  • Charles Adu Boahen exhibited lack of sound judgement – OSP on Galamsey Economy documentary

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has released its investigative findings regarding suspected corruption and corruption-related offenses involving Charles Adu Boahen, a former Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance.

President Akufo-Addo on November 14, 2022 requested the OSP to investigate allegations of corruption and corruption-related offences involving Mr. Adu Boahen contained in an investigative documentary titled Galamsey Economy published by investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his associates operating under the corporate name of Tiger Eye P.I.

Tiger Eye P.I. audio visually recorded Mr Adu Boahen in the act of his commission of corruption and corruption-related offences. Undercover agents of Tiger Eye P.I., posing as businessmen who were interested in investing in Ghana, met with Mr. Adu Boahen and tabled their investment plans and proposals to him.

It was reported that sensing an opportunity to cash-in on his position as a Deputy Minister of Finance, Mr. Adu Boahen demanded twenty per cent (20%) of the value of the proposed initial investment or ten per cent (10%) upfront payment of the value of the proposed initial investment and post-investment sharing of the proceeds of the investment.

Per the OSP, as part of its investigations, it found out that in 2019 in Accra, Ahmed Hussein Suale, an operative of Tiger Eye P.I., who was shot to death tabled a proposal that the Al Baraka Banking Group were interested in investing in Ghana, particularly in the banking sector.

According to the OSP in its recently published report, convincing Mr. Adu Boahen was not a straightforward matter.

“Initially, he was altogether unreceptive of the idea of meeting with the supposed representatives of the Al Baraka Banking Group. Subsequently, he softened his stance and he suggested a meeting in Accra. The undercover agents demurred. They insisted
on a meeting in Dubai. Eventually, Mr. Adu Boahen agreed to meet with the supposed representatives of the Al Baraka Banking Group in Dubai by taking a brief detour to Dubai on his way to Singapore on official government business,” a portion of the report read.

A second meeting was held and there, a supposed wealthy sheikh expressed his desire of investing about half a billion United States dollars in Africa.

Mr. Adu Boahen, intending to assure the supposed sheikh of his political office, influence and connections, is said to have launched into his family history about his father, the relationship between the President and his father, his close ties to the President, which is akin to an uncle and nephew relationship, and his close affinity to the Vice President.

“The supposed sheikh picked up on Mr. Adu Boahen’s assurances of the comfort of his high political influence and connections, and he laid the cards of the whole purpose of the sting operation on the table by enquiring as to the percentage cut Mr. Adu Boahen would take in respect of the intended investment in the financial sector in Ghana,” the report added.

After a bit of hesitation, Mr. Adu Boahen, on his own volition, suggested twenty percent (20%) of the intended investment as his cut.
Mr. Adu Boahen must have meant this percentage cut demand as a shot in the dark.

The report noted that “this is because he could not believe his immense good fortune and he could not hide his utter surprise as the supposed sheikh readily agreed to his suggestion. Indeed, Mr. Adu Boahen stated that he thought the sheikh would reject the suggested percentage cut as too pricey.”

The supposed sheikh offered Mr. Adu Boahen US$40,000.00 in cash as shopping money. The supposed sheikh placed
the cash on a piece of furniture close to Mr. Adu Boahen, and he accepted and collected the cash with gratitude.

During the OSP’s investigation, Mr. Adu Boahen is said to have stated that he politely accepted the cash gift in order not to offend the sensibility of a potential wealthy investor looking to invest half a billion United States dollars in Ghana.

For the OSP, it was “improper” for Charles Adu Boahen to bargain for twenty percent of the value of the proposed investment and his receipt of a cash gift of US$40,000.00 from the supposed sheikh.

Also, “Mr. Adu Boahen exhibited lack of sound judgment.”

The OSP noted that his claim that he accepted the cash gift to avoid offending the supposed sheikh lies very thinly; and his suggestion of the payment of an appearance fee of US$200,000.00 to the Vice President was quite reckless – especially as the Vice President was unaware of the business he was conducting and had not tasked him to demand money of whatever description on his behalf.

According to the OSP, the indices point to the conclusion that Mr. Adu Boahen’s principal motivation was his own personal gain though he intimated to the supposed sheikh that he was driven by the potential developmental benefits to Ghana of the proposed investment.

The actions of Mr. Adu Boahen tantamount to trading in influence or influence peddling, the OSP said. This is the practice of using one’s influence or connections in public office or with persons in public office to obtain favours or preferential treatment for oneself or for another person, usually in return for payment.

These acts have not been specifically prohibited in our jurisdiction as crimes per se, the OSP noted.

“Though the conduct of Mr. Adu Boahen amounts to trading in influence or influence peddling, which is closely associated with corruption, there is no actual criminal prohibition of his acts in respect of which the OSP has a mandate to further act,” the report added.

As such, “the Special Prosecutor directs the closure, at this time, of the investigation in respect of allegations of corruption and corruption-related offences involving Charles Adu Boahen contained in the investigative documentary titled Galamsey Economy published by Tiger Eye P.I.”

The investigation may be re-opened should the circumstances and further facts so dictate.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has called on Parliament to work expeditiously in passing the Corrupt Practices Act into law to codify the prohibition of all forms of corruption in the country.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) made the clarion call after directing the closure of investigation in respect of allegations of corruption and corruption-related offences involving former Minister of State for Finance, Charles Adu Boahen.

“Mr. Adu Boahen exhibited lack of sound judgment. His claim that he accepted the cash gift to avoid offending the supposed sheikh lies very thinly; and his suggestion of the payment of an appearance fee of Two Hundred Thousand United States dollars (US$200,000.00) to the Vice President was quite reckless – especially as the Vice President was unaware of the business he was conducting and had not tasked him to demand money of whatever description on his behalf,” the OSP added.

The OSP notes that the non-prohibition of most predicate acts of corruption and corruption-related offences engenders impunity of malevolent conduct and the erosion of democratic tenets, which spawn formidable hurdles in the fight against corruption, especially in the public sector.

“On this score, the OSP calls for the passage of a Corrupt Practices Act to comprehensively codify the prohibition of all forms of corruption. Further, the OSP joins up with the positively persistent calls of the pressure group, OccupyGhana for the passage of a Conduct of Public Officers Act to properly regulate the conduct of public officers,” the report added.

Bawumia knew nothing about $200k appearance fee Charles Adu Boahen wanted – OSP

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has vindicated Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia over his alleged involvement in a influence peddling claim in investigative documentary titled Galamsey Economy published by investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his associates operating under the corporate name of Tiger Eye P.I.

In the documentary published in 2022, former Minister of State for Finance, Charles Adu Boahen, was accused of demanding an appearance fee of US$200,000.00 from one sheikh in order to see the Vice President.

As part of its investigations into the matter, the OSP confirmed that the former Minister of State for Finance did suggest the payment of an appearance fee.

However, in a report detailing its holistic investigation, the OSP noted that “the Vice President was unaware of the business he was conducting and had not tasked him to demand money of whatever description on his behalf.”

According to the OSP, Charles Adu Boahen’s claim that he accepted the cash gift to avoid offending the supposed sheikh lies very thinly; and his suggestion of the payment of an appearance fee of US$200,000.00 to the Vice President was “quite reckless.”

When news surrounding the appearance fee emerged in November last year, the Vice President in a Facebook post noted that he is “not aware of any such meeting held by Minister Adu Boahen or a supposed “appearance fee”.

According to Dr Bawumia, his most cherished asset in life is his integrity, thus, “I will not allow anyone to use my name to engage in corrupt activities.”

He called for the dismissal of Mr Charles Adu Boahen should he be found culpable of the allegations levelled against him.

“I would like to state that if what the minister is alleged to have said is accurately captured in the video, then his position as a minister of state is untenable. He should be dismissed summarily and investigated,” he wrote.

The actions of Mr. Adu Boahen, according to the OSP tantamount to trading in influence or influence peddling.

As such, the Special Prosecutor has directed the closure, at this time, of the investigation in respect of allegations of corruption and corruption-related offences involving Charles Adu Boahen contained in the investigative documentary titled Galamsey Economy published by Tiger Eye P.I.

The investigation may be re-opened should the circumstances and further facts so dictate.

Lies, even Elon Musk won’t make such an offer – Ghanaians react to Ken Agyapong’s “$800m step-down offer” claim

X (formerly known as Twitter) is buzzing and this is thanks to Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong.

Kennedy Agyapong, a flagbearer aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has asserted that he was offered $800 million to withdraw from the party’s presidential race and support his rival, Vice President Dr. Bawumia.

In an interview with Time FM, he said “Does he know the number of people who have approached me but for the love of Ghana and the delegates I have said I will never do it?

“The money they offered is $800 million, if he doesn’t know. He should ask Mr Oppong Bio, if that is what they are saying but I said no I will not step down, Ghana first.

“In 2016, you people were not able to buy pickups. How come today you are able to offer me $800 million? So I said I won’t step down…” he stated.

His comments have been scrutinized by some X users who believe it is absurd such an offer will be made.

Lithium mining: We skipped Ibrahim Mahama, Despite Group for an Australian company that doesn’t care about us – Asani Tanoh

Political analyst, Yaw Asani Tanoh, is displeased with government’s decision to issue a fifteen-year mining lease to Barari DV Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of Atlantic Lithium Limited, enabling them to commence lithium mining in Ewoyaa, within the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region.

In an interview on Neat FM, Yaw Asani Tanoh expressed his concern while noting that government could have found a number of local businessmen and companies to collude and ensure the mining of the mineral resource.

He noted that the likes of Ghanaian Businessman Ibrahim Mahama, Despite Group Media could have been engaged to pull their resources to carry out this intiative.

“I pray that the media will take it up to scrutinize the lithium agreement. If there is a need to stop, then we stop it.
Just yesterday we discovered lithium, we have gone to give it to Australia. Couldn’t we have said this lithium, we know the value of it, because in the whole world, the document shows us that they will set up a lithium value addition factory here. If that is done, it will mean that in the whole world, Ghana is the third country that has discovered Lithium.

“So why didn’t we put businessmen in Ghana together, like Ibrahim Mahama, he is into mining, Despite Group of Companies, other big sharks, and say we are putting this into your hands. Find partners and put in place the necessary factories to ensure we add value to the lithium.”

For Mr Tanoh, foreign companies do not have the country’s welfare at heart compared to locals, who have shown their generosity to individuals affected by the Akosombo dam spillage.

“You have gone to give it to Australia, when the Akosombo Dam spillage flooded communities, where is Australia. I just can’t think far. We are belittling ourselves indicating that unless a foreigner comes to do things for us, especially mining.
These foreign companies at the end of the day go to Ibrahim Mahama and the rest to lease trucks, bulldozer etc or even sell come contract areas to him. So what is the point in seeding our mineral resources that we can mine by ourselves, the monies remaining here for development but give it to somebody else,” he stated.

He has also called on the media to thoroughly probe the terms of agreement between the government and Barari DV Ghana Limited that has been permitted to engage in lithium production in the country.

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has emphasized that the agreed terms provide the Government and the people of Ghana with greater value in the mining of lithium.

He highlighted key aspects of the lease, including:

    • An increased royalty rate from the standard 5% to 10%.

A royalty rate refers to the percentage of revenue or profit that one party (the licensee) agrees to pay to another party (the licensor) in exchange for the right to use a specific asset or intellectual property.

    • An increase in the state’s free-carried interest in the mining operation from 10% to 13%.

Free-carried interest refers to a portion of ownership or equity interest in an investment that an individual or entity holds without having to make any financial contributions or bear any of the associated risks.

    • The acquisition of an additional 6% in the mining operation by the government through the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF).
    • The government will also secure a 3.06% stake in the company’s parent entity, listed on the Australian and London Stock Exchanges.
    • The requirement for the company to list on the Ghana Stock Exchange to allow Ghanaian entities, such as pension funds and individuals, to participate in the business.
    • The commitment of the company to contribute 1% of its revenue to a Community Development Fund, which will be used for the development of communities affected by its operations.
    • The company’s obligation is to establish a chemical plant for lithium processing. If the company is unable to establish such a plant, it will provide its lithium to third-party chemical plants in the country, promoting job creation and development in mining communities and across Ghana.

After extensive consultations and approval by Cabinet, a policy for the exploitation and management of green minerals, including lithium, was endorsed by Parliament and integrated into the mining lease issued to the company.

But X users are finding it difficult to believe that such a hefty amount would be proposed just for a candidate to give up his presidential ambitions.

Reports of military attack on Garu residents false – National Security Ministry

The Ministry of National Security has refuted claims that the deployment of soldiers to Garu, a town in the Upper East Region, was intended to mistreat its residents.

The ministry clarified that the soldiers were dispatched to the town for a special operation but encountered hostility from some agitated community members.

The operation, scheduled for October 24, 2023, faced strong resistance from the Garu youth when they confronted the security personnel, armed with AK-47 and rifle guns.

In a press statement released by the National Security Ministry and available to GhanaWeb, it was explained that the Garu youth initiated an attack on five counter-terrorism intelligence officers by firing at a black Toyota Land Cruiser in which the officers were traveling.

Despite their efforts to identify themselves as national security personnel, the Garu youth did not allow them the opportunity to do so.

The ministry also mentioned that the intelligence officers were pursued by the youth to the local police station, where the attack persisted.

According to the Ministry of National Security, on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, an irate youth group armed with AK 47 rifles, machetes and other weapons besieged a team of five counter-terrorism intelligence officers deployed by the Ministry of National Security to Garu, in the Upper East Region, on a critical, special operation.

Despite initial attempts to introduce themselves as National Security personnel, the irate youth group proceeded to attack the officers by firing multiple gunshots at a black Toyota Land Cruiser in which the officers were seated.

Following an escalation of the attacks on their vehicle, the officers drove to seek refuge at the Garu Police Station. The irate youth, subsequently, pursued the officers, encircled the police station and fired multiple shots at same with the intention of killing the officers.

The Ministry of National Security and the Ghana Armed Forces, on Saturday, October 28, 2023, conducted a joint operation in Garu to seize weapons used by the perpetrators of the attack on the National Security personnel.

According to the ministry, a number of the perpetrators have also been arrested.

Criticise our work objectively, avoid insults and falsehood – EC tells public

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs. Jean Mensa, has expressed a willingness to embrace public scrutiny and critique of the EC’s activities, particularly in the lead-up to the critical 2024 election.

However, she emphasizes that such scrutiny should be characterized by objectivity and candor. Mrs. Mensa believes that this approach is crucial for maintaining national peace, security, and the continued health of the country’s democracy.

“We at the EC are not above scrutiny. Scrutinise and critique our work as your role requires but do so with objectivity. Criticisms laced with insults and falsehood should be beneath you,” she told members of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) on Sunday.

This statement was delivered as a keynote address during the 27th GJAAwards ceremony, which took place at the Accra International Conference Centre. The event’s theme was “Harnessing Media Freedom to Safeguard the Democratic and Security Framework: Assessing the Integrity of the 2024 Election.”

The Chairperson of the EC, Mrs. Jean Mensa, emphasized that the forthcoming 2024 Election carries significant importance, as its outcome has the potential to either enhance or jeopardize the nation’s peace and security.

“We are partners in this quest to build our nation. We should put our nation first and work to ensure that irrespective of our political divide, our actions and activities inure to the benefit of our dear country.”

Consequently, she urged the media to be well-informed about the intricate balance they need to maintain in order to protect Ghana’s democracy, peace, and unity.

“The 2024 Election will be more than democratic exercise, it is the test of our nation’s resilience.”

“As journalists, you’ll play a crucial role in building up that resilience. You’re the ears, eyes and hearts of the citizens,” she said.

The role of journalists could either impact the nation positively or negatively, Mrs Mensa said, and called for the truth to be upheld at all times.

“Ensure that your work goes beyond mere rhetoric to practising responsible journalism”, she admonished and acknowledged the pioneering role the media had played in shaping and shepherding the nation’s democracy over the years.

The Chairperson of the EC strongly criticized certain media organizations for serving as conduits for disseminating propaganda, propagating false information, and thereby dividing the population along political party lines. She emphasized the need for the media to fulfill their duty by prioritizing transparency, truth, and accuracy.

“Your work as journalists will impact positively or negatively on our dear nation. As the Fourth Estate, you’re not only facets of our democracy, you’re its bedrock, beacon of truth.”

“You’re the guardians of transparency. You’re the vanguard for freedom, catalyst for informing and shaping public debate.”

She pointed out that the National Media Commission should enforce rigorous adherence to media ethics and establish standards to uphold truth and respect, while taking punitive measures against those who violate the rules and regulations. In addition, she stressed the importance of citizens being discerning and consistently seeking the truth from the media.

“The power of the pen is unmatched and, therefore, must always engage in fact-checking of every information received thoroughly to avoid misinforming the public.”

In all, 34 awards were presented to journalists and media organisations for exceptional reporting and excellent work, with Mr Erasmus Asare Donkor, a Broadcast Journalist with Multimedia Group, being crowned the Journalist of the Year.

The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has strongly criticized the reported military abuses inflicted on Garu residents, denouncing the actions as “barbaric and unacceptable.”

He expressed his deep dismay and distress upon viewing the disturbing images of the victims who suffered from the military brutality.

Information from the Ministry of National Security indicates that on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, an irate youth group armed with AK 47 rifles, machetes and other weapons besieged a team of five counter-terrorism intelligence officers deployed by the Ministry of National Security to Garu, in the Upper East Region, on a critical, special operation.

But Assembly Member for the Garu-Natinga Electoral Area, Bartolomeo Asore Azumbil, says anyone that the military personnel came across was attacked, including his six-year-old son.

“The military came in the early hours, around 2am [on Saturday], and attacked the heart of the town. Everybody they came across was attacked and rendered several people with various degrees of injuries. About fifty-three people have been hospitalized, and I went around the various hospitals and gathered information about fifty-three hospitalizations.”

“Those who have been treated and discharged are undisclosed, and some did not even go to the hospital. Also, they came to my house three times, woke up my six-year-old son, beat him up, and went and broke my brother’s room, collecting some money and mobile phones before leaving,” he is quoted to have said by Citinews.

As such Mr Mahama Ayariga has announced his decision to join his fellow Members of Parliament from the Upper East Region to call for a full scale inquiry into what happened.

“I recall being involved in a discussion with the Minister for National Security a few days earlier about some national security operatives who had been stopped in Garu and handed over to the police. I saw media reports of alleged shooting of the vehicle used by the national security operatives by unknown persons in the Garu area.

“If the incident is a retaliation by the soldiers, this will be most unfortunate and unacceptable in today’s Ghana and he have to get to the bottom of the matter and hold the military personnel involved in this dastard act accountable,” he added in a statement.

Also, Members of Parliament for the Garu and Tempane constituencies have condemned the alleged military assault.

Albert Alalzuuga Akuka and Lydia Akanvariba Adakudugu, respectively, in a joint press statement condemned the alleged actions of the military and demanded “a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.”

“I stand before you today deeply honoured and proudly humble to receive this national award for investigative journalism. For too long we have witnessed the devastating effects of irresponsible mining in Ghana, a nation rich in natural resources and even richer in potential.”

“Our investigation driven by a commitment to truth and justice has uncovered the harsh reality of illegal mining…The legacy of irresponsible mining, is not environmental degradation, it is a tale of shattered dreams, lost livelihoods and lives forever scarred. We as journalists bear a profound responsibility to be the voice of the voiceless, and shine lights on shadows that threaten our nation’s future,” Mr Donkor said.

Just two weeks ago, Erastus Asare Donkor was the recipient of the PAV Ansah Communication Award at the 2023 EMY Africa Awards. • Ghana’s corporate boards see women representation rise by 12% – Report

Ghana’s corporate boards see women representation rise by 12% – Report

Ghana has shown significant advancements in its pursuit of gender equality within corporate boardrooms, particularly among companies listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange according to the 2023 Board Diversity Index, a collaborative effort between TheBoardroom Africa (TBrA) and Alitheia Capital.

The report reveals that the number of women holding positions in the boardrooms of Ghanaian-listed companies has experienced a noteworthy 12% increase, rising from 67 in 2022 to 75 in 2023.

In a statement issued by TheBoardroom Africa, it emphasized that Ghana, where women make up nearly half of the workforce, has achieved an impressive 12% growth rate in gender parity within boardrooms in the current year.

While this progress is commendable and encouraging, it also underscores the ongoing imperative for continued and unwavering efforts to champion gender equality in leadership roles.

The report’s key findings offer a comprehensive overview of gender diversity within corporate boardrooms in Ghana, highlighting the substantial impact of women chairs on boardroom diversity.

“Companies led by women as Chairpersons exhibit significantly higher boardroom diversity, with 80% of them having 30% or more women on their boards, while only 26% of companies with male Chairs reach this threshold,” it said.

As per the report, there has been a notable increase in the representation of women in C-suite or Chair positions within Ghana. Women now constitute 14% of Chairs, 12% of CEOs/MDs, 22% of CFOs, and 13% of COOs on the boards of listed companies in Ghana.

While the number of Chairs, CFOs, and COOs has seen a positive growth of 2%, 5%, and 7%, respectively, there was a slight decrease of 1% in the number of CEOs/MDs compared to the figures from 2022.

The report also highlights a positive trend indicating a rising number of companies with women on their boards. An encouraging 89% of listed companies now have at least one woman on their board, as opposed to 88% in the preceding year.

Sectors that directly engage with consumers, such as advertising & communications, fast-moving consumer goods, and telecommunications, notably excel in gender diversity, with 100% of their companies boasting over 30% women directors.

The financial services sector stands out in terms of the highest number of women board directors in Ghana, with 34 women directors, accounting for 45% of the total, as per the report.

On the flip side, boards composed entirely of men are decreasing in prevalence, with the proportion of listed companies without any women on their boards decreasing from 12% in 2022 to 11% in 2023.

Speaking on the report, Founder and CEO of TheBoardroom Africa, Marcia Ashong said, “While acknowledging the progress made, Ghanaian corporate boards possess the potential to drive enduring change by strategically embracing key factors that fuel progress toward gender diversity. These factors include fostering an inclusive culture and securing an unwavering commitment from top leadership to prioritise and champion gender diversity.”

She emphasized that the importance of this commitment is further emphasized by the findings of the 2023 report, which demonstrate the significant impact of women chairs in promoting greater female representation on boards.

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to ongoing collaboration with the Ghana Stock Exchange and other stakeholders to advance this vital agenda,” Marcia Ashong said.

Meanwhile, Abena Amoah, the Managing Director of the Ghana Stock Exchange, emphasized that gender diversity is not only a matter of ethics but also a driving force for improved governance and enhanced stock performance. She further highlighted that compelling evidence supports the idea that companies that prioritize diversity across all leadership tiers are better equipped to make sound decisions, foster innovation, and, in the end, achieve more robust financial outcomes.

“At the Ghana Stock Exchange, we see gender diversity as a fundamental component of responsible and sustainable business practices, and we are committed to supporting our listed companies in achieving greater diversity and, in turn, greater success,” she said.

The 2023 Ghana Board Diversity Index report provides a comprehensive analysis of the current state of gender diversity in corporate boardrooms, identifies areas for growth and improvement, and serves as a call to action for all stakeholders—businesses, policymakers, and civil society—to accelerate progress toward gender equality in leadership.

  • Haaland and Foden lead Man City to Man United derby victory

Haaland and Foden lead Man City to Man United derby victory

Manchester City delivered a brilliant performance to secure a 3-0 victory over Manchester United, marking their best showing of the season so far. Erling Haaland initiated City’s success by converting a first-half penalty, though it hardly reflected their dominance.

Haaland netted his second with a header just after the halftime break, and he later set up Phil Foden for a late third goal. This comprehensive win was well-deserved for the Treble winners, as they put on a remarkable 90-minute display against their cross-city rivals.

Before kickoff, an emotional tribute was paid to Sir Bobby Charlton, with City representatives Mike Summerbee and Tony Book, along with Brian Kidd who played for both Manchester clubs, warmly welcomed onto the pitch. A minute’s applause reverberated through Old Trafford in his honor.

The game commenced with City initially appearing somewhat disjointed but eventually finding their rhythm, nearly taking the lead in the eighth minute. A lofted pass from Rodrigo found Kyle Walker in the box, whose header met Phil Foden, only for Andre Onana to save the header. Haaland attempted to connect with his foot but couldn’t, and United managed to clear the danger.

United’s strategy was to get numbers behind the City midfield, and their counter-attacks were often threatening, with City’s defense outnumbered on several occasions.

City’s next notable effort was a curling shot by Jack Grealish in the 20th minute, which Onana pushed around the post. City continued to press, and Foden earned a free-kick 35 yards from goal.

As Julian Alvarez’s cross entered the box, Rodrigo appeared to be pulled back by Rasmus Hojlund. Referee Paul Tierney paused the game for a VAR check and concluded that Rodrigo had been fouled, awarding City a penalty. Haaland stepped up and, despite facing criticism from the Stretford End, calmly sent Onana the wrong way to make it 1-0. This was City’s first penalty at Old Trafford since 1992.

The rest of the half saw United largely pinned back in their final third as City dominated possession, with Rodrigo playing a pivotal role.

United had an excellent opportunity to level the score just before half-time as Scott McTominay unleashed a powerful rising shot from the edge of the box, but Ederson made a superb save.

City should have been two or three goals ahead by half-time, but their lead was only 1-0.

United began the second half aggressively, with Bruno Fernandes testing Ederson with a swerving drive. A few minutes later, City extended their lead to 2-0. A purposeful break led to Alvarez finding Grealish on the left, who then delivered a pinpoint cross for Haaland to head home.

Grealish almost added another goal but was denied by Onana, who saved his shot. City continued to dominate, and United struggled to mount a threat.

On 69 minutes, United had a rare attack, with Marcus Rashford missing a chance to score as he sent an angled shot wide. Grealish also had an opportunity to extend City’s lead, but Onana made a crucial save.

City secured the win with a third goal in the 80th minute. Haaland selflessly set up Foden, who calmly flicked the ball into the net. United players received several late bookings as City displayed a statement performance in the rainy Manchester weather.

Overall, it was a vibrant and outstanding 90 minutes from Guardiola’s side.

Fumigation and disinfection exercise in Mepe underway as flood waters recede

Fumigation and disinfection operation has been embarked by the Volta River Authority (VRA) in the communities impacted by the flooding caused by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

Residents in areas like Mepe in the Volta Region’s North Tongu District, where floodwaters are gradually receding, are anticipated to participate in the disinfection operation.

The VRA’s Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, Ing. Kwame Osei Mensah Darkwa, emphasized the organization’s commitment to guaranteeing the safety and habitability of residences, public areas, and the entire community after the floods in an interview with Joy News.

“The VRA contracted Zoomlion to carry out fumigation and decontamination exercises in the areas where the water has receded significantly to make it safe for habitation again. So essentially we have the assembly represented by the safety officer, a representative from the traditional council, a chief executive and the intention is to go to the areas we’ve inspected and we want them to be dry for them to start some form of decontamination of the place.”

Asked whether all other districts affected by the flooding would also be fumigated, Ing. Dankwa said that “Of course, when it becomes necessary. So we are looking at it, for today our intention is to tackle the Mepe area.”

The District Chief Executive of the North Tongu Assembly, Divine Osborne Fenu, praised the VRA for its timely initiative.

But before going back to their houses, he advised the locals to wait until the fumigation process was finished.

Mr. Fenu clarified that in order to make sure the residences are safe, they urge the occupants to exercise caution until all inspections and fumigations are completed.

“We are appealing to all of them to remain calm, to stay where they are currently. Until those places are fumigated and the structural engineering inspection is done to ensure that the buildings are safe before they move in. We don’t want buildings collapsing on human beings, on anybody.”

Garu residents allegedly assaulted by military officers; MPs call for probing

Reports indicate that officers of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) allegedly assaulted residents of Garu during a dawn raid on October 29.

Sources say this raid was a retaliation for an attack on some National Security operatives that occurred on October 24.

But the Ministry of National Security has denied the reports of assault in a statement and explained that the action of the military was “a joint operation in Garu to seize weapons used by the perpetrators of the attack on the National Security personnel.”

Meanwhile, Members of Parliament for the Garu and Tempane constituencies have condemned the alleged military assault on some residents of Garu in the Upper East Region.

The MPs for the two constituencies; Albert Alalzuuga Akuka and Lydia Akanvariba Adakudugu, in a joint press statement condemned the alleged actions of the military and demanded “a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.”

The two MPs warned that such actions have the tendency to worsen the Bawku conflict and are therefore, among other things demanding a total withdrawal of the military from the area and arresting the culprits and dealing with them accordingly.

It is reported that over 50 residents have been hospitalised as a result of the alleged assault.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP), founded on July 28, 1992, has produced three flagbearers since its creation.

The centre-right and liberal conservative party in Ghana with the symbol of an African elephant has, however, held six elections to select its flagbearer.

During the 1992 Congress, the NPP elected Albert Adu Boahen as its first-ever flagbearer. He garnered 1,121 votes, representing 56.60 percent of the total votes cast.

He competed against five others, namely: Dr. Dsane Selby, John Agyekum Kufuor, Dr. Safo-Adu, J.A Addison, John Kwame Koduah. Peter Ala Adjetey who announced his presidential ambition, did not contest as he withdrew from the race.

Boahen lost to the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Jerry Rawlings, but received 30.4% of the votes cast.

In 1996 and 1998, the NPP held another congress. Six individuals contested in both congresses, and John Agyekum Kufuor emerged victor in both with 1,034 votes (51.99%) and 1,286 votes (64.60%) respectively.

In his second attempt, Kufuor contested against Albert Adu-Boahen, J.H Mensah, Dr. Jones Ofori-Atta, Dr. Kwame Safo Adu and Dr. Dsane Selby.

During the 1998 congress ahead of the 2000 general elections, Kufuor stood against Kofi Apraku, Mr Kwame Kodua, Malik Alhassan Yakubu and Joseph Henry Mensah.

No individual stood against John Kufuor ahead of the 2004 general elections as he sought to retain his seat after his 2000 general election victory.

    John Agyekum Kufuor

Prior to the 2008 general elections, a super delegates conference was convened to streamline the seventeen aspirants who had thrown their hats into the ring.

The list of contenders included notable figures such as Mr. Yaw Osafo-Maafo, Mr. Kwabena Agyepong, Professor Mike Oquaye (a former Speaker of Parliament), Mr. Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, Dr. Barfuor Adjei-Barwuah, Mr. Jake Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey, Mr. Daniel Kweku Botwe, Mr. Alan John Kyerematen, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo (the current President of Ghana), Papa Owusu Ankomah, Mr. Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko, Dr. Kobina Arthur Kennedy, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, Alhaji Aliu Mahama (then Vice President), Dr. Kwame Addo Kufuor, and Mr. Felix Kwesi Owusu-Adjapong.

The super delegates conference involved 2,326 delegates representing the 230 constituencies. Of these votes, 2,285 were deemed valid, while 8 were rejected.

    Alan Kyerematen and Nana Akufo-Addo

Ultimately, Nana Akufo-Addo emerged as the frontrunner with 1,096 votes, accounting for 47.9% of the total votes cast.

The NPP held its congress in 2010 to determine who leads the party ahead of the 2012 general elections. The number of aspirants dropped drastically. Five contenders stood. Nana Akufo-Addo, Frimpong-Boateng, Alan Kyerematen, Isaac Osei and John Kwame Kudua slugged it out.

Nana Akufo-Addo once again took the lead and was elected NPP’s flagbearer with 83,517 votes, representing 78.89% of the votes cast.

Akufo-Addo lost the 2012 presidential race to another NDC presidential aspirant, John Dramani Mahama who was vice to Atta Mills during his administration.

Prior to the 2016 general elections. Only three candidates competed this time. Francis Addai Nimoh, Nana Akufo-Addo and Alan Kyerematen competed.

After voting, Nana Akufo-Addo, secured 117, 413 votes, representing 94.35 per cent to become flagbearer.

This time around, the NPP’s flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, won the 2016 general elections. He beat John Dramani Mahama.

In 2020, Nana Akufo-Addo went unopposed as he sought to retain his seat, which he did by beating John Mahama.

    Mahama and Akufo-Addo

Now, the NPP is yet to elect its flagbearer for the 2024 general elections.

The NPP held its second superdelegates conference on Saturday, August 26, to trim down the number of its aspirants from 10 to 5.

On the ballot, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong appeared first, followed by former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen in the second position. Essikado-Ketan MP Joe Ghartey came in at number three, Energy Expert Kwadwo Poku at number four, and Dr Afriyie Akoto, former Minister for Food and Agriculture took the fifth position.

    10 NPP presidential aspirants

Also, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong was sixth on the ballot, Former member of Parliament for Mampong Constituency Addai-Nimo took the seventh slot, followed by former Trade Minister Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku at number eight. Mr. Kyerematen Agyarko, a former Energy Minister, was number nine and lastly, the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia at number 10.

Following the conference, some individuals such as Alan Kyerematen and Boakye Agyarko stepped down from the race.

Four aspirants remain and they will slug it out at the party’s primaries to be held on November 4.

The candidates are Vice President Dr Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr Afriyie Akoto and Addai-Nimo.

  • Thousands flee Nkwanta due to ethnic conflict

Thousands flee Nkwanta due to ethnic conflict

Fresh clashes between the Adele, Challa, and Akyode tribes have triggered the displacement of thousands of residents from Nkwanta township to neighboring districts and municipalities in the Oti Region.

The conflict stems from disputes over the performance of ritual rites related to the Akyodes’ 2023 annual Yam Festival.

During the clashes, numerous homes and shops were damaged, transforming Nkwanta into a deserted town.

According to reports from the Ghana News Agency (GNA), many individuals have sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical treatment at the Nkwanta South Municipal Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital, both located in Nkwanta township.

Madam Anastasia Okyere, an Administrator at St. Joseph Hospital, informed the GNA that the hospital had received more than 10 patients with multiple gunshot wounds.

Some were treated at their facility, while others were transferred to the Nkwanta South Municipal Hospital for further medical attention.

She also expressed concern about the safety of hospital staff, highlighting the potential threats to their lives.

When the GNA contacted Nkwanta South Municipal Police Commander Superintendent Lartey Lawson, he declined to provide a comment on the matter.

On a related note, the Adeles and Challas ethnic groups held a joint press conference against the Akyode tribe’s celebration of the Kyodjible Yam Festival, deeming it a disturbance.

These three tribes have been embroiled in a longstanding dispute over the ownership of Nkwanta township, which remains unresolved for decades.

  • Akufo-Addo honours 2023 NSMQ finale as Special Guest

Akufo-Addo honours 2023 NSMQ finale as Special Guest

President Akufo-Addo will on Monday, October 30, attend the grand finale of the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) at the National Theatre in Accra.

For the first time, President Akufo-Addo, as a Special Guest is set to address the audience at the NSMQ as it commemorates its 30th anniversary.

The final contest features Presbyterian Boys Senior High School, Achimota School and Opoku Ware Senior High School.

Meanwhile, an interlocutory injunction application has been filed at a High Court to prevent Primetime Limited from organising the grand finale of the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) as scheduled.

In a writ sighted by The Independent Ghana on social media, the plaintiff whose identity is currently unknown and is represented by Kwame Boateng Atuahene, Esp, wants the court to halt the organising of the finale until the “final determination of the matter in terms of the affidavit in support.”

The said affidavit is not privy to the media or the public. However, Prempeh College and Primetime Limited have engaged in a disagreement over a riddle for which clues were given that point to the linear superposition principle during the semifinal stage contest that saw Opoku Ware School beat Prempeh College.

In response to the school’s petition, which claimed that the principle of superposition is the same as the principle of linear superposition, Primetime Limited noted that the Quiz Mistress, Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, exercises discretion on whether an answer provided by a contestant is sufficiently responsive and would have accepted the answer given by the Prempeh College contestants if, in her professional opinion, the target key and the answer given by the contestants were synonymous.

The statement signed by Managing Director of Primetime Limited, Nana Mensa-Bonsu, noted that Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann did not in this case, opting instead to maintain the more precise original key.

In response to Primetime Limited’s statement, Prempeh College reaffirmed their belief that the answer provided by their contestant was accurate. They clarified that they did not concur with the NSMQ’s consultant when the issue was initially discussed at the contest venue.

“Given that we may have reached an impasse we request that an independent consultant or body be engaged to bring finality to this matter since one cannot be a judge in his own matter. We are resolute in our minds that our answer is correct, and we will take all available steps and means including legal, if necessary, to ensure that Prempeh College and its contestants are given a fair hearing,” the school’s statement added.

In injury time, the English midfielder secured the victory with a volley, adding another chapter to his remarkable start with Real.

Bellingham, at the age of 20, has now tallied 14 goals in 16 matches for both club and country this season.

Truck driver knocked down by speeding vehicle on Accra-Kumasi highway

A driver of a Man Diesel trailer truck has lost his life while attempting to set up a warning signal for his immobile vehicle on the Accra to Kumasi Highway, near Atwemamena, a community close to Akyem Asafo.

The driver’s quick thinking to caution oncoming traffic took a devastating turn when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle traveling at high speed.

The unfortunate incident unfolded when the truck, carrying valuable cargo, experienced mechanical problems during the evening in Atwemamena, a local community in the Eastern Region.

Regrettably, the driver did not have access to a warning triangle, a critical piece of safety equipment necessary for such circumstances.

In an effort to signal approaching drivers, he resorted to the traditional practice of cutting and placing weeds on the road.

Tragically, this makeshift warning approach turned fatal when an approaching vehicle failed to notice the driver on the road and collided with him. The impact of the collision resulted in the driver’s untimely demise, leaving his shaken colleague, who witnessed the tragic event.

This accident has left the local community in mourning, with the driver’s mate overwhelmed by grief, shedding tears at the scene.

Local law enforcement promptly arrived at the scene to manage the situation.

The deceased driver’s body has been transferred to the morgue, awaiting the arrival of his family to make further arrangements.

Partey sustains muscle injury, to be out a few weeks

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, has announced that Thomas Partey will be sidelined for “several weeks” due to a muscle injury sustained on Monday, October 23.

After a 30-day absence caused by a groin injury, Partey returned to action, playing 16 minutes in Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Manchester City. He subsequently participated in both of Ghana’s international matches against the USA and Mexico during the break, and he was listed as an unused substitute in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw against Chelsea.

The 30-year-old was expected to start in Arsenal’s Champions League match against Sevilla but sustained the injury on the eve of the game.

Speaking in anticipation of Arsenal’s 5-0 victory over Sheffield United on Saturday, Arteta confirmed that Partey would be unavailable for several weeks.

“He’s got a muscle injury and we are expecting him to be out for a few weeks,” said Arteta.

“We don’t really know the extent of it and he has more tests today but he picked up that injury in a training session with the last kick of the ball before Sevilla, so very unfortunate,” he added.

Thomas Partey has featured in four games for Arsenal this season.

‘Go back’ – Fire Service delay sparks anger among Anloga youth

Some youth in Anloga of the Ashanti Region prevented some officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) from carrying out one of its mandate during a fire incident.

A building caught fire and was burnt to ashes due to lack of pragmatic measures to douse the flames.

In a video shared on social media, the growth of the flames was captured.

Per the video, officers of the Fire Service arrived at the scene when the fire had intensified.

Residents who were peeved by the ‘late arrival’ of the Fire Service prevented the officers from accessing the scene.

They directed the officers in a fire engine to return to their base as harm had already been caused.

Due to the duration of the video, it is unknown if the officers did return or stepped out to battle the fire.

Recently, a fire outbreak at Anloga Market in Manhyia of the Ashanti Region razed down a 21-bedroom house.

Some residents who engaged the media blamed the destruction of properties on the late arrival of the firefighters.

But according to AD1 Asamoah Kennedy, the Fire Service was contacted an hour after the fire broke out.

“What they are saying is not true. At times when you come and ask them, which number did you call, they will give you a number the Fire Service hasn’t even heard before.

“They don’t have our numbers and they didn’t call us on time. They called us around 9:59 am and we arrived at this place at 10:10am,” he told JoyNews in an interview monitored by The Independent Ghana.

  • No home affected by dam spillage will be left out – NADMO on relief support

No home affected by dam spillage will be left out – NADMO on relief support

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has provided assurance that households impacted by the Akosombo Dam spillage will receive assistance to aid their recovery from the disaster.

Mr. Eric Nana Agyemang-Prempeh, the Director-General of NADMO, offered this assurance while inspecting relief items intended for distribution to the affected individuals. The inspection took place in Battor Dugame, situated in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region on Friday.

The relief items included toiletries, bags of rice and sugar, medications, plastic buckets, bowls, mattresses, canned foods, and bottled water.

Nana Agyemang-Prempeh emphasized NADMO’s unwavering commitment to coordinating response efforts to address the situation. He stressed that natural disasters do not discriminate based on tribe, political beliefs, or religious affiliations and called for unity and support for the victims.

“NADMO will continue to carry out its mandate of coordinating all response efforts to manage disasters because when it strikes it doesn’t know tribe, political affiliation, or religion, so let’s unite and support our brothers and sisters who have been affected by this flooding as a result of the harsh realities of climate change,” he said.

The inspection was attended by various dignitaries, including traditional rulers and government officials. Among them were Madam Fatimatu Abubakar, Deputy Minister of Information, and Seji Saji, the Deputy Director of NADMO.

Madam Abubakar expressed the government’s deep concern for the safety of those affected and underscored the government’s swift actions to protect their well-being. She noted that an Inter-Ministerial Committee has been established to ensure the effective coordination and prompt response to the needs of the victims.

The controlled spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong dams has presented significant challenges, including power outages, damage to infrastructure, and threats to the lives of residents. It has also disrupted transportation as some roads have been washed away, leaving commuters stranded. In response, some individuals have resorted to using boats and canoes, further jeopardizing their safety.

The districts most severely affected include Asuogyaman in the Eastern Region, where the Akosombo Dam is situated, as well as the North, Central, and South Tongu districts in the Volta region, and Ada East and West in the Greater Accra Region. The spillage became necessary due to high water inflows into the Akosombo reservoir, causing water levels to exceed their upper limits.

  • Invest in antivirus – Cyber Security Authority to public

Invest in antivirus – Cyber Security Authority to public

The Director-General of the Cyber Security Authority has emphasized the importance of public, particularly institutions, assuming responsibility for their cybersecurity by investing in antivirus software.

Dr. Albert Antwi-Boasiako clarified that this investment stands as one of the most effective methods to safeguard sensitive data against malicious software.

Dr. Antwi-Boasiako delivered these remarks during a cybersecurity awareness symposium organized by Accra Technical University (ATU). He highlighted that the ever-evolving cyberspace exposes both individuals and organizations to increased risks.

This event was part of the university’s activities in observance of the global Cybersecurity Awareness Month campaign, which serves as a reminder of the necessity to protect oneself, family, and business from online threats. The local theme for this occasion was “Strengthening the weakest link in the Cyber Security Ecosystem to protect the crown jewels of tertiary education infrastructure.”

Dr. Antwi-Boasiako underscored that the most vulnerable aspect of cybersecurity is the human factor, particularly individuals’ ability to take minimal steps in safeguarding their private information. He advised organizations, especially educational institutions, to implement measures to secure sensitive information, including academic results, financial transactions, and student data.

“It is not enough to invest in technologies to protect sensitive information, but it is important to build the capacity of the people to man the systems,” he said.

Professor Amavi Acakpovi, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of ATU, said the emergence of COVID-19, and the rise in the use of the internet for many activities, including e-campus, conducting examinations, and meetings heightened the need for cybersecurity.

“Today we run many information technology systems in the University, such as academic records management, human resource records, financial records, admission and certification,” he said.

The University, Prof Acakpovi said, was at the forefront of technological education, and had taken steps to be a beacon of knowledge and innovation.

“We recognise that, in the 21st century, our students, faculty, and the community at large must be well-versed in the art of cyber defence,” he said.

He said the future of the country’s digital society, the security of sensitive information, and the protection of critical infrastructure depended on collective efforts.

Prof Acakpovi said the School had invested in innovative technology, established state-of-the-art cybersecurity programmes, and forged collaborations with industry experts and government agencies to strengthen its defences.

He said, “The threats we face today may pale in comparison to those of tomorrow, hence, the need for continuous dialogue, the dissemination of knowledge, the exploration of emerging trends, and the sharing of best practices are not just a necessity; it is our moral and ethical obligation to future generations.”

  • ‘Underestimated’ Ngannou knocked down Fury but failed to win

‘Underestimated’ Ngannou knocked down Fury but failed to win

Tyson Fury has conceded that Francis Ngannou presented a more formidable challenge than he initially anticipated, ultimately securing a contentious split-decision triumph.

The Gypsy King, aged 35, experienced a knockdown in the third round from a powerful left hook but managed to recover, ultimately winning with scores of 96-93 and 95-94 on two judges’ cards. The third judge scored it 95-94 in favor of Ngannou.

It’s important to note that Fury’s WBC title was not at stake during this crossover event against the former UFC heavyweight champion, which took place in Saudi Arabia.

He said: “That definitely wasn’t in the script.

“He’s given me probably one of my toughest fights in the last 10 years.

“Francis is a hell of a fighter, strong, big puncher, and a lot better boxer than we all thought he would be.

“He’s a very awkward man and he’s a good puncher and I respect him a lot.”

Ngannou, aged 37, accepted the decision with sportsmanship and issued a warning to the boxing world, signaling his growing affinity for the art of pugilism.

He said: “It didn’t go my way.

“I might have come up short today. I’ll come back. Now I know I can do this.

“We can run it back again and I’m sure I’m going to get better.

“Get ready. The wolf is in the house. I’m going to bite some sheep.”

Even though Ngannou has expressed his desire for a rematch, Fury’s attention is currently directed towards his upcoming heavyweight title unification bout against Oleksandr Usyk. The two fighters are scheduled to clash in December, and after the close call in their recent match, there’s speculation that their war of words could potentially postpone the fight.

  • EU provides Ghana with 105 armoured vehicles to aid terrorism fight

EU provides Ghana with 105 armoured vehicles to aid terrorism fight

The European Union (EU) has contributed 105 armored vehicles to Ghana as part of their support to strengthen the country’s efforts in combating terrorism and violent extremism.

These vehicles, comprising 13 Land Cruiser pickups, 10 GMC Sierra, Toyota Land Cruisers, Toyota Single Cabins, Chevrolet Silverado, and Sierra pickups, are a component of the €20 million EU aid package to Ghana for its counterterrorism endeavors.

This contribution is part of a more extensive €616 million EU initiative aimed at reinforcing the defense and security capabilities of the four coastal nations in the Gulf of Guinea.

During the vehicle commissioning ceremony in Accra on Saturday, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed concern over the recent attempts by terrorists and extremist groups to extend their influence from the Sahel to the coastal West Africa region. The President emphasized that such actions posed a significant security threat to the stability and people of Ghana.

He further noted that the recent incidents of terrorist activities in neighboring countries like Burkina Faso, Togo, and Benin underscored the urgent need for Ghana to enhance its counterterrorism measures.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between countries and partners like the EU in addressing the terrorist threat in the West African region and ensuring enduring peace.

“It is imperative to understand that no single country can confront the terrorist threat on its own,” Nana Akufo-Addo said.

“Within the context of our collective efforts, and the pooling of resources, we appreciate the significance the 105 military vehicles donated by the European Union. These vehicles will play a pivotal role in our efforts to fortify Ghana’s northern frontiers against terrorists,” the President added.

President Akufo-Addo also pledged to ensure the effective utilization of the vehicles provided by the EU.

“Ghana stands ready to continue to collaborate with the European Union to safeguard our mutual security interests, particularly in the West Africa region,” he added.

Mr. Joseph Borrell Fontelles, the High Representative and Vice President of the EU, stressed that Ghana holds a pivotal position in safeguarding regional stability.

He emphasized that the spread of insecurity from the Sahel region to the Gulf of Guinea nations is not merely a risk but a current reality that demands proactive and decisive action.

“A reality that our partners cannot and should not face alone,” he said.

Mr. Fontelles stated that the provision of the vehicles to Ghana solidified the enhancement of the security and defense collaboration between the two entities, introducing a fresh perspective to their enduring partnership.

He further guaranteed that Ghana would receive additional military equipment, encompassing assets for intelligence gathering and surveillance, military engineering tools, explosive ordnance disposal equipment, and electronic warfare systems, all of which would significantly support the nation’s efforts in combating terrorism.

“We are confident that this support will benefit not only Ghana, but the entire sub region as well,” he added.

Mr. Fontelles also emphasized the necessity for Ghana to enhance service delivery and job opportunities, particularly for young people and women, as a measure to proactively deter any potential acts of terrorism.

“Investments for socio-economic inclusion, in the Northern regions of Ghana in particular, is key,” he said, adding that a large proportion of its current bilateral cooperation – €203 million for 2021-2024 was dedicated to those priorities.

“The EU is also supporting Ghana in the promotion of sustainable growth, digital and green transitions, climate resilience, reinforcement of health and education systems,” he indicated.

Mr Albert Kan Dapaah, Minister of National Security, said the donation of the armoured vehicles to Ghana was a “testament to the diligent efforts and unwavering commitment of the Government” in strengthening the bounds of cooperation between Ghana and the EU for mutual benefits.

“We believe today’s event also symbolizes the significant step forward in the strengthening of cooperation between Ghana and the European Union.

“Together, we work towards safeguarding our mutual security interests, contributing to peace and stability, not only in Ghana, but across the West African region,” he added.

Ga Manye’s funeral: Akufo-Addo, Bawumia commiserate with Ga community

President Akufo-Addo and Vice-President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Saturday participated in the final funeral rites of the late Ga Manye, Naa Dedei Omaedru III, in Accra alongside the Ghanaian community.

The occasion was marked by a solemn atmosphere filled with tributes, prayers, cultural exhibitions, and performances by both the Asafoatsemei and Asafoanyemei (male and female warriors).

The event was graced by the presence of government ministers, members of parliament, the Diplomatic Corps, traditional leaders, and various other distinguished guests.

The Presidency made a generous cash donation of GHS100,000 to support the Ga State as a gesture of respect for the late Queenmother.

In accordance with the cultural customs of the people, the government also contributed assorted beverages to honor the occasion.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, in a tribute prior to the funeral rites, described the Naa Omaedru as: “A faithful, hardworking, long-serving member of the Ga State.”

“She was a model of traditional dignity and elegance.”

Naa Dedei Ablah, known as the Ga Manye, passed away at the age of 88 on December 26, 2022. Having been enstooled in 1963, she exemplified a deep understanding of Ga traditions and a commitment to equity, particularly in the context of women’s welfare.

Her reign was marked by a dedication to public and voluntary service, with a focus on promoting peace, education and opportunities for young people, especially girls.

The event saw economic activities at the Accra Central Business District (CBD) come to a halt as shops were closed to reflect to state of mourning.

This followed a directive from the Ga Traditional Council.

Per the funeral arrangements, a thanksgiving service will be held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Anglican Church, on Sunday, October 29, followed by further traditional rites.

  • Former US Veep, Mike Pence pulls out from 2024 presidential race

Former US Veep, Mike Pence pulls out from 2024 presidential race

Former US Vice President Mike Pence has opted to step back from the 2024 presidential race, citing that the timing is not favorable.

He delivered this announcement during a speech at the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas on a Saturday afternoon.

“We always knew this would be an uphill battle, but I have no regrets”, he wrote in a statement.

In a race currently dominated by former President Donald Trump, Mr. Pence has become the first prominent Republican candidate to halt his campaign. Pence’s presidential bid had been lagging behind Trump in the polls.

Furthermore, Mr. Pence’s campaign has accrued substantial debt, with him ending September in the red, owing $621,000 (£512,038) and holding only $1.2 million (£989,446) in his campaign funds, which is notably less than his Republican competitors.

“I am leaving this campaign, but I will never leave the fight for conservative values,” he wrote in a statement addressed to his supporters.

The 64-year-old faced a significant loss of support from Republican voters when he openly disagreed with Mr. Trump regarding the events of the 6th of January Capitol riot in 2021. Additionally, his role in presiding over the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory in Congress further eroded his standing with many in the Republican base.

Mr. Trump criticized Mr. Pence for what he perceived as a lack of “courage” when Pence declined to challenge the Democratic leader’s election win. During the 2021 storming of Congress, some rioters even chanted “hang Mike Pence,” and since that fateful day, many staunch Trump supporters have viewed him as a betrayer.

The former Vice President said in March that Mr Trump’s encouragement of the rioters had “endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day”.

In his resignation, Mr Pence did not endorse any other Republican candidates for the presidential election.

But he called on Americans to choose a leader that “will ‘appeal to the better angels of our nature’ and not only lead us to victory but also lead our nation with civility and back to those time-honoured principles that have always made America strong, prosperous and free.”

Challenges with gas supply from Takoradi to Tema plants fixed – GRIDCo, ECG

The Ghana Grid Company LTD (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have jointly announced the successful resolution of the recent intermittent power outages that affected the nation.

This positive outcome has been achieved through the reinstatement of gas supply to the power generating plants in Tema, sourced from Takoradi, as indicated in their official press release.

“The improved gas supply has enabled power restoration to all loads across the country,” parts of the statement read.

Last week, major parts of Accra experienced intermittent power outage and GRIDCo in a statement noted that the challenges with supply of gas was responsible for the blackouts.

Meanwhile, the companies have emphasized that customers who continue to experience power disruptions may be dealing with localized issues or faults and are encouraged to promptly inform their local ECG office for the necessary repairs.

“GRIDCo and ECG regret the inconvenience caused by the recent load management exercise and thank the public for their patience,” the statement added.

The series’ final episode captured the hearts of 52.5 million viewers in the United States, cementing it as the most-watched TV episode of the 2000s.

The LA Times and TMZ, the first to break the news of Perry’s demise, reported that he was found unresponsive in a hot tub at his residence.

A spokesperson from the Los Angeles Fire Department informed the BBC that emergency responders were dispatched to an address in the Pacific Palisades area, responding to a “water emergency” of an unspecified nature, but refrained from confirming Perry’s identity.

Warner Bros. TV, the production company behind Friends, expressed profound sorrow at the loss of their cherished friend, Matthew Perry.

“Matthew was an incredibly gifted actor and an indelible part of the Warner Bros. Television Group family,” the statement read.

“The impact of his comedic genius was felt around the world, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of so many. This is a heartbreaking day, and we send our love to his family, his loved ones, and all of his devoted fans.”

Matthew Perry, born in Massachusetts in 1969, spent his formative years in Ottawa, Canada, where he attended elementary school alongside Justin Trudeau, who would go on to become the Canadian prime minister.

As a teenager, Perry relocated to Los Angeles, where he made his acting debut as Chazz Russell in Boys Will Be Boys and took on various roles in TV shows, including Growing Pains.

However, it was his role on Friends that catapulted him to international stardom. The show chronicled the lives of six New Yorkers as they navigated the complexities of dating, careers, and friendship. Co-starring Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and Lisa Kudrow, Friends became one of the most iconic and successful television series of all time.

Matthew Perry portrayed the endearingly awkward Chandler Bing, renowned for his sharp-witted one-liners, earning him a Primetime Emmy nomination in 2002.

Throughout his life, Perry grappled with addiction to painkillers and alcohol, seeking help through rehabilitation clinics on multiple occasions. In a 2016 interview with BBC Radio 2, he disclosed that he could not recollect three years of filming Friends due to the influence of alcohol and drugs.

In a more recent interview last year, he shared that he chose not to watch the show.

“I didn’t watch the show, and haven’t watched the show, because I could go, ‘Drinking, opiates, drinking, cocaine,’” he said. “I could tell season by season, by how I looked. That’s why I don’t wanna watch it, because that’s what I see.

“But I think I’m going to start to watch it because it’s been an incredible thing to watch it touch the hearts of different generations.”

Perry also appeared in several films, including Fools Rush In, Almost Heroes and the Whole Nine Yards.

Maggie Wheeler, who played Janice in Friends, was the first of Perry’s co-stars to publicly pay tribute to the actor.

Ms Wheeler said the joy Perry brought to “so many” in his “too short lifetime will live on”.

“I feel so very blessed by every creative moment we shared,” she wrote on Instagram.

Morgan Fairchild who played Perry’s on-screen mother and erotic novel writer Nora Bing, said: “I’m heartbroken about the untimely death of my ‘son’, Matthew Perry.”

“The loss of such a brilliant young actor is a shock,” she added.

Cruel Intentions actress Selma Blair said Perry was her “oldest boy friend”, adding: “All of us loved Matthew Perry, and I did especially. Every day. I loved him unconditionally. And he me.

“And I’m broken. Broken hearted. Sweet dreams Matty. Sweet dreams.”
