Suspect in Tupac’s murder case pleads not guilty in court

A former gang member, Duane “Keffe D” Davis, aged 60, who has been charged in connection with the 1996 murder of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, entered a not guilty plea in a Las Vegas court on Thursday.

Davis, who had long been suspected in the murder and had recently made self-incriminating statements in public, responded with “not guilty” when asked by Clark County district judge Tierra Jones if he wanted to enter a plea.

In September, Davis was indicted by a Clark County grand jury and subsequently arrested in Las Vegas for his alleged involvement in the drive-by shooting death of Tupac Shakur, a crime that had remained unsolved for many years and left a significant mark in the history of rap music.

The charges against Davis include one count of murder with a deadly weapon for his purported role in leading a group of individuals to carry out the drive-by shooting that took Shakur’s life near the Las Vegas strip.

Tupac Shakur, widely recognized as one of the greatest artists in the rap music genre, was not only a prominent figure in the industry but also a commercial success, with over 75 million records sold worldwide.

Authorities asserted that Davis orchestrated a plot to avenge the beating of his nephew, Orlando Anderson, by Shakur and members of his entourage inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena on the night of September 7, 1996, just hours before the fatal shooting.

U.S. Global Water Strategy High Priority Country Plan for Ghana launched

On October 27, the U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, alongside Ghana’s Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Dr. Freda Prempeh, officially launched the U.S. Global Water Strategy High Priority Country Plan for Ghana.

The United States, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has outlined plans to invest around $100 million in Ghana’s water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sector over the upcoming five years.

This commitment is in addition to the $89 million that USAID has already allocated since 2009. The Country Plan for Ghana aims to raise an additional $20 million from both public and private sectors within the next five years.

Inadequate WASH services have adverse effects on health, education, and economic development, and there are notable regional disparities in Ghana.

For instance, as per the 2021 Population and Housing Census, access to clean water varies from 98% in the Greater Accra Region to 55% in the North East Region. Furthermore, while the national average for open defecation in rural areas stands at slightly over 30%, the five regions in northern Ghana report an open defecation rate exceeding 50%.

During the launch, Ambassador Palmer reaffirmed the U.S. support to Ghana’s WASH sector, saying; “The United States Government looks forward to continuing our partnership to ensure that everyone in Ghana has access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene to improve health and promote economic development.  Together, we’ll ensure clean water and sanitation for all.”

Lake Bosomtwe will soon dry up – Scientists reveal

Researchers from the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) have revealed that Lake Bosomtwe, the largest natural lake in West Africa, is facing a threat from climate change and human activities.

Their study, which compares data to a baseline from 1986, indicates that the lake has been receding and drying up. Since 2005, it has receded by approximately 35 meters from its shoreline, leading to a significant decrease in water levels, a reduction in its size, and a decline in the fish population.

Lake Bosomtwe, believed to have been formed by a meteorite impact around 1.2 million years ago, measures about 8 kilometers in diameter and covers a surface area of roughly 52 kilometers.

However, over time, its depth has decreased from 800 meters to a maximum of 78 meters, and its surface area has reduced from 52 kilometers in 1986 to 46 kilometers in 2020.

    Lake Bosomtwe www.myjoyonline.com

This green vegetative cover was once part of the Lake Bosomtwe

The diminishing fish stock has had a profound impact on the communities along the lake, where fishing is a primary livelihood. Consequently, many residents have turned to crop farming, which involves clearing the forest cover surrounding the lake. Additionally, the use of weedicides and pesticides has led to pollution in the lake’s vicinity.

Among the concerned residents seeking solutions to the challenges facing Lake Bosomtwe is 77-year-old Patrick Elliot Ofosu, a lifelong resident of Abono.

“Some years back, about 25-years ago, the whole of this area was part of the Lake. As you see it yourself, the Lake is going back; it’s receding.”

    Lake Bosomtwe www.myjoyonline.com

Human activities are impacting negatively on the Lake Bosomtwe

Sediments, comprising organic matter and silt resulting from human activities and erosion, have accumulated beneath West Africa’s largest natural lake. In an initiative named “Building Resilience of Lake Bosomtwe to Climate Change (RELAB),” scientists from the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), in collaboration with international partners from three institutions, aim to enhance the lake’s ability to withstand the impacts of climate change.

Aligned with Goal Two of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, the project envisions a world where hunger can be eradicated, ensuring food security, improved nutrition, and enhanced agriculture.

To assess the lake’s resilience to climate change, the project has employed automated measurement systems, conducted limnologic sampling, and carried out laboratory analyses. This involved gathering historical data and implementing new, high-frequency in-crater meteorological measurements, among other methods.

The research findings indicate a reduction in the size of the lake, with the surface area diminishing from 52 km² to 47.17 km². This decline in size has resulted in an unprecedented drop in water levels, fish catch, and the forest cover surrounding the lake. These changes can be attributed to human activities that have occurred since 1986.

One of the adverse practices identified as detrimental to Lake Bosomtwe is the use of harmful agricultural inputs by farmers in their efforts to provide for their families.

“Its mainly because of climate change from 2005, we have seen that there’s a rapid loss of water; rapid recession of the water mark from the shoreline to the water mark.”

Dr. Sanful says there could be dire consequences if no action is taken.

    Dr. Samuel Sanful www.myjoyonline.com
Dr. Samuel Sanful is Project Lead

“The Lake is not behaving the way that it used to be in the past. Fish catch has been going down, the people’s livelihood has been affected and their agricultural activities have been intensified as a result of their quest to support their livelihoods from farming.”

The research team remains committed to investigating the potential impacts of human activities and climate change on Lake Bosomtwe, focusing on both the forest cover that surrounds the lake.

In response to the concerns raised, particularly by residents in the affected communities, Dr. Sanful emphasized, “Our responsibility is to conduct the research and collect the data, and then engage in transferring this data to policymakers, who must subsequently incorporate this information into an action plan.”

Residents of Abono and other communities in the vicinity of Lake Bosomtwe, including Mr. Ofosu, are eager to witness the safeguarding and preservation of the lake’s integrity for the benefit of future generations.

“The whole of this place was waterlogged some years back. But look at the speed at which it is receding. So something must be done,” 77-year old native of Abono, Patrick Elliot Frimpong appealed.

UK, Ghana working to expand trade, investment

Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, Papa Owusu-Ankomah, has disclosed ongoing efforts to strengthen and enhance the trade relationship between the two nations.

In an exclusive interview on JoyNews’ PM Express, Business Edition, the High Commissioner emphasized the proactive measures being undertaken to address challenges and reinforce economic ties between Ghana and the United Kingdom.

He underscored the establishment of the UK-Ghana Business Council in 2018, which holds biannual meetings to engage in comprehensive discussions about trade priorities and the challenges faced by both countries. The primary objective is to identify trade barriers and formulate practical strategies to overcome them.

“Recently too, at the last meeting in June, the UK, Ghana Investors Advisory Group was set up. It is supposed to focus on the private sector and then try and as it were, see if there are any bottlenecks to investment and trade, and then put in place or make recommendations to overcome these bottlenecks,” he highlighted on Thursday.

The High Commissioner emphasized that both nations share a mutual commitment to elevate their economic relationship, broaden trade prospects, and promote investment for the mutual benefit of Ghana and the United Kingdom.

He recognized the substantial advancements made in recent years and highlighted the importance of the UK’s support in realizing the objective of creating a more favorable business and investment climate.

“So we are making the best effort on both sides to improve upon our economic relations and deepen economic relations, expand the areas of trade, business and investment for a win-win situation for both countries,” he said.

Recognizing Ghana’s prowess in the automotive, textiles, and pharmaceutical sectors, Mr. Owusu-Ankomah emphasized the vital role played by the UK government and its agencies in training entrepreneurs within these industries.

This training equips skilled professionals to effectively identify and access markets in the United Kingdom, thereby facilitating a surge in Ghanaian product exports.

“Of course, we’ve signed the Trade Partnership Agreement, in just early part of 2021 where you could have free access to markets in the UK. So a lot depends on us and with the support of the UK Government.

“We’ll try to then identify as I said, the bottlenecks and then enable our entrepreneurs in those particular areas to be able to export more to the United Kingdom,” he said.

Abirem washing bay attendant dies after being trapped under truck’s head

A washing bay attendant in his 30s lost his life while cleaning a truck at Abirem Newtown in the Ashanti Region.

The victim, known as Nuhu, unfortunately succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at the hospital after being trapped under the truck’s head during the cleaning process.

This unfortunate event unfolded while Nuhu was tasked with cleaning the truck at the Alhaji Washing Bay situated in Abirem New Town within the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region. While working on the truck’s engine compartment, the truck’s head unexpectedly descended, resulting in Nuhu being pinned underneath.

It required a substantial collaborative effort from his colleagues, onlookers, and a team from a towing company to free him from the vehicle. A group of police officers who arrived at the scene promptly rushed him to the hospital.

In response to the incident, the Kenyasi District Police Command has extended invitations to the driver of the vehicle and the owner of the washing bay to aid in the ongoing investigations.

The deceased leaves behind a pregnant wife, with whom he had recently started a new chapter in his life through marriage.

Díaz’s father ‘kidnapped by rebels’ – Colombia govt

The father of Liverpool’s Luis Díaz was kidnapped by the left-wing rebel group, the National Liberation Army (ELN), according to the Colombian government.

Luis Manuel Díaz was abducted at gunpoint along with his wife, and although his mother was left behind by the kidnappers, his father was taken away.

The ELN is Colombia’s main remaining active guerrilla group, and it has been in conflict with the state since 1964. The group has reportedly indicated that they will release Díaz’s father in the coming days.

Surveillance footage revealed that the couple’s car was being trailed by men on motorcycles on a Saturday afternoon. The assailants confronted the couple when they stopped at a petrol station in their hometown of Barrancas, situated in the northern province of La Guajira.

While the kidnappers left behind Luis Díaz’s mother in a car, they forcibly took away his father. The police have concentrated their search efforts on the Serranía del Perijá, a mountainous area that spans the border between Colombia and Venezuela. They have discovered two motorcycles and a vehicle believed to have been used in the abduction but have not yet pinpointed the whereabouts of Luis Manuel Díaz.

In a statement delivered in Spanish, Otty Patiño, the head of the government delegation engaged in negotiations with the ELN, has called for the “immediate release of Luis Manuel Díaz.”

“We remind the ELN that kidnappings are criminal acts which violate international humanitarian law and that it is their [the ELN’s] duty as part of the current peace process to not only stop engaging in kidnappings but also to forever stamp them out,” the statement reads.

Prior efforts to broker a peace agreement with the ELN have proven unsuccessful. However, as part of President Gustavo Petro’s comprehensive peace strategy, his administration resumed negotiations with the rebel group.

Earlier this year, both parties reached an agreement on a mutual six-month ceasefire, which took effect on August 3.

The kidnapping of Luis Díaz’s father has sparked widespread outrage in Colombia. The football player, who is also a key member of Colombia’s national team, enjoys immense popularity in the country.

On Tuesday, hundreds of people joined Cilenis Marulanda in a march to demand the release of her husband.

Liverpool, Díaz’s club, has expressed unwavering support, with manager Jürgen Klopp dedicating their 3-0 Premier League victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday to Díaz, stating that the win was “for our brother.”

Brazilian forward Rodrygo has committed his future to Real Madrid by signing a contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2028. This new agreement reportedly includes a release clause of one billion euros.

At just 22 years old, Rodrygo has already made a significant impact, scoring 39 goals in 179 appearances for Real Madrid and earning 18 caps for the Brazilian national team.

He initially joined La Liga’s Real Madrid at the age of 18, transferring from Brazilian club Santos.

During his tenure with Real Madrid, Rodrygo has contributed to the team’s success, securing two La Liga titles, the Copa del Rey, the UEFA Champions League, the European Super Cup, and the Club World Cup.

Additionally, he was a part of Brazil’s 2022 World Cup squad, making five appearances during the tournament in Qatar. His fellow international teammate, Vinicius Jr, also recently extended his contract with the club, committing to Real Madrid until 2027.

  • NPP primaries will only make us stronger – General Secretary

NPP primaries will only make us stronger – General Secretary

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has expressed his optimism regarding the party’s ability to remain united following the November 4 election to select the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 election.

He believes that the party can reconcile its members and stay focused on its goal of ‘breaking the 8.’

Kodua made these remarks during an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Thursday, November 2. This statement comes in the context of the party’s efforts to prevent post-election divisions by requiring all four presidential aspirants, namely Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Francis Addai-Nimoh, and Dr. Afriyie Akoto, to sign a strict legal commitment.

This commitment means that these aspirants cannot resign from the party in case they lose the elections on Saturday. This decision was reached during a meeting between the National Council of Elders and the aspirants.

When asked whether the presidential aspirants have been genuine in their commitment to this undertaking, Mr Kodua responded affirmatively.

“Absolutely, from what happened today, it was very genuine and I can tell you that the NPP will come from this November 4 election stronger,” he said.

Following the signing of the commitment, Mr. Frimpong Kodua addressed the press at Alisa Hotel. He highlighted that the candidates have also reached an agreement to acknowledge and accept the election results. He further emphasized that the commitment will be rigorously enforced.

“The New Patriotic Party today has had a very successful meeting involving all the major stakeholders in the party including President Akufo-Addo and former President Kufuor.”

“At the meeting, all four aspirants were made to sign an undertaking to the effect that they would not resign from the party should they not win the elections. They have also signed an undertaking to support the winner of the primaries for the party to win the 2024 main elections”, Mr Kodua said.

Foreign Affairs Ministry assures no Ghanaian has been injured in Israel-Palestine conflict

The Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Mavis Nkansah Boadu, has provided assurance that no Ghanaian citizen is presently affected by the conflict in Israel and Palestine.

She emphasized that the Ghanaian community remains safe, even though the severity of the conflict has generated numerous concerns regarding the welfare of Ghanaians in Israel.

“As for now, the issue of evacuation of our nationals from Israel has not been raised,” she said while delivering a statement on the war in Parliament on Thursday, November 2.

The Deputy Foreign Minister added, “Our mission is in close contact with the leaders of the Ghanaian community and it is providing the Ministry with the update of their welfare and we provide the general public with update pertaining to the welfare of Ghanaians in Israel.”

Some Ghanaians residing in Israel have expressed their lack of interest in returning to Ghana, even as the conflict between Israel and Palestine intensifies.

Seth Cudjoe, a Ghanaian living in Israel, mentioned in an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse that considering an exit would be his last resort because he has a newborn child who requires care and stability.

“I am not planning to come back to Ghana…I can’t also leave my wife and jump to Ghana and the Ghana community is not ready to leave for Ghana unless the worst confronts us,” he said.

According to him, the Ghanaian community in his area is not ready to leave until they have no other option.

“The Ghanaian community in Israel feels safer in Israel. With the help of the Embassy, they’ve communicated to us – given us instructions, basically what to do and what not to do. They’ve made us understand that if they don’t have anything to do outside, then no need to go out .. to be at a safer place.”

According to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza, more than 8,700 people have lost their lives since Israel’s retaliatory bombing commenced.

The ministry further reports that 9,061 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the current conflict began on October 7, including 3,760 children, with over 32,000 others sustaining injuries.

In this video, the female officer can be seen admiring her facial features as she turns left and right. Underneath the video is the song “Lonely at the Top” by Asake.

What is most interesting about this footage is that the police officer is engaged in this action in front of individuals currently in police custody.

These jailed individuals also participate in the video-making process by showing hand gestures indicating that they enjoy what is happening.

Some X users have commented on the video. Others are pleased with the fact that she is giving these jailed individuals a good time. Others question if her action is unlawful.

  • Exhibit fairness and stop trying to sabotage Dr K.K. Sarpong – Ashyirem Royal Gate to Asantehene

Exhibit fairness and stop trying to sabotage Dr K.K. Sarpong – Ashyirem Royal Gate to Asantehene

The Ashyirem Royal Gate has chided Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his refusal to accept the nomination of Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong, the former Chief Executive of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), as the paramount chief of Offinso.

In a press statement, the Royal Gate accused the Asantehene of employing various tactics to obstruct Dr. K. K. Sarpong’s nomination, despite his widespread support among the people of Offinso.

The group further stated that the remarks made by Otumfuo while rejecting Dr. Sarpong’s nomination at a gathering held at the Manhyia Palace were deeply regrettable.

“It is important to note that Otumfuo’s pronouncements at some of the Asanteman Council sittings on the Offinso Stool Affairs are regrettable. There have been unsubstantiated allegations, among others, all in a bid to justify a course of action he wants to take. Recounting these here can be very embarrassing, to say the least.

“…One can justifiably conclude that Otumfuo is trying at ALL COST, to find a reason to block Dr. K. K. Sarpong’s nomination. But we think the Overlord of Asanteman should eschew bias and exhibit fairness towards the Ashyirem Royal family and Offinsoman. Truth is that since we revere Otumfuo, it would have been disrespectful to have challenged his pronouncements while he was sitting in State. However, it is only fair that very obvious errors which undermine the rights of the Ashyirem royals, including Dr. K. K. Sarpong, ought to be corrected,” parts of the statement read.

The group additionally alleged that the Asantehene employed coercive methods to compel the Offinsohemaa, the kingmakers of Offinso, and K.K. Sarpong into compliance.

“Is this not contrary to the very principles on which Asanteman was founded and built? Wherein lies the “ ka bi na menka bi” mantra? Asanteman should be fair to all of its citizens at all times. We humbly appeal to Otumfuo not to wage a personal vendetta on anyone so as to get his will to prevail. Rather, justice should be done to all manner of persons to honour the Golden Stool and in line with his own oath,” it said.

The group also asserted that the Asantehene lacked the authority to install a paramount chief (Omanhene).

“In line with Asante customs and traditions, which and often hammered by Otumfuo himself, he (Otumfuo) does not select and enstool any Omanhene. This is also the spirit of the Asante Confederacy, which protects the identity of each paramountcy. Otumfuo and Asanteman Council are invited to resolve misunderstandings in the process of enstoolment but not to undermine a process which has gone the full length without any blemish,” it added.

The demise of Nana Wiafe Akenten III, late Paramount Chief of Offinso has left a vacuum which has led to a litigation over who becomes his successor.

A former Chief Executive Officer of Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Dr K. K. Sarpong, who was selected by the Queen Mother of Offinso with the support of some elders has been rejected by Otumfuo.

According to Otumfuo, it is rather wrong for the queen mother to present K. K. Sarpong as a candidate by virtue of royal bloodline while history and tradition tell otherwise.

Otumfuo has thus warned Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko and the elders of Offinso to put forth their candidate through the appropriate channel or risk having him rejected permanently.

But the Otumfuo’s declaration has not sat well with the Kingmakers of Offinso.

PRESS CONFERENCE BY ASHYIREM ROYAL GATE

    Introduction
On Tuesday, 24th October, 2023, Youth of Offinso held a press conference to support the nomination of Dr. K. K. Sarpong (by Nana Serwaa Nyarko and the kingmakers of Ofinso) as Omanhene of Offinso to succeed Nana Wiafe Akenten III. We of the Ashyirem Royal gate wish to thank Opanin Owusu Afriyie, the Spokesman, and other citizens who engaged the media. Offinsoman is grateful to you for shedding light on a number of pertinent issues for the benefit of our citizens, Ghanaians and the world at large.

Today, we the members of the Ashyirem Royal Gate have invited you here to inform you adequately about relevant matters of concern. We thank you all, particularly, Ladies and gentlemen of the media for honoring our invitation. You are heartily welcome. Now I proceed to address you in English whilst other family presenters will translate same to Twi after which we shall take your questions.

Due Process was used in selecting Dr. K. K. Sarpong
We all know that Offinsohemaa and the kingmakers have selected one of the Royals, Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong, to ascend the Wiafe Stool in line with Asante customs and traditions. Indeed, in addition to the Kingmakers, stool elders have received the customary ‘aseda’ from the selected candidate. Currently, the kingmakers are Gyaasehene, Benkumhene, Nifahene, and Akyeamehene. Some sub chiefs such as Saamanhene and Asonahene, representatives of deceased kingmakers and Akyeame received ‘aseda’ as well even though they are not kingmakers. The said sub chiefs who are NOT kingmakers have but been holding themselves as such at Asanteman Council for unexplained reasons. Otumfuo’s Akyeame are aware of this fact but have turned blind eyes to it.

Acceptability of Dr K. K. Sarpong by Offinso Citizens and Residents
An overwhelming majority (more than 90%) of the citizens and inhabitants of Offinso support the selection of Dr. Sarpong. It is a known fact that Offinso people want him as their Omanhene because they see in him a better future in terms of development, modernization, education, investments and jobs.
Outcome of investigations into matters raised in Petitions and Approval by Asanteman Council.

We have taken note of the petitions filed to challenge the eligibility of Dr K. K. Sarpong by some persons who claimed to be Ashyirem Royals. Two of the grounds for the petitions, among others, were:
    (i) that Dr. Sarpong was not a royal of the Offinso Wiafe Stool;
(ii) that the lineage of Dr. Sarpong was cursed by Nana Gyan Frempong.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II appointed a five (5) member Committee under the Chairmanship of Barima Tweneboa Kodua II, Omanhene of Kumawu, and which included Omanhene of Yamfo, .Omanhene of Ofuman; Kaase hene and Atwima hene to principally determine the blood line of Dr. K. K. Sarpong. He warned the Committee members not to be influenced by any monetary inducement and concluded with his famous saying that (i.e wo maame anwo a wo anwo wo).

In its findings, the Committee concluded that Dr. K. K. Sarpong is a Royal of the Wiafe Stool and therefore eligible to ascend it. When everybody was expecting Otumfuo to confirm Asanteman’s endorsement, surprisingly he said ‘3ny3 3hc na asem no nam koraa”. Rather, he said that there was a curse on Ashyirem Abusuapanin Atta Kwabena and therefore by extension, Dr. K. K. Sarpong. Fortunately, the Committee had dealt with the curse issue and had unanimously dismissed it.

We have reason to suspect that Otumfuo perhaps overlooked that aspect of the report or was not privy to it. Otherwise there would not have been any need to bring it up as a new dimension. The Committee concluded that two of the three petitioners who raised the curse allegation were not even Ashyirem royals and did not therefore have the capacity to bring their petitions. Must we entertain allegations of persons who did not even have locus in the case as the Committee concluded?

At Asanteman sitting in Council on 13th October, 2022 the findings of the Kumawuhene’s Committee were overwhelmingly endorsed by a majority of 21 out of 26 members who voted representing more that 80%. Notwithstanding the dismissal of the petitions by Nananom, Otumfuo is curiously using the curse in frustrating the enstoolment of Dr. K. K. Sarpong as Offinsomanhene.

    Position of His Royal Majesty
It is important to note that Otumfuo’s pronouncements at some of the Asanteman Council sittings on the Offinso Stool Affairs are regrettable. There have been unsubstantiated allegations, among others, all in a bid to justify a course of action he wants to take. Recounting these here can be very embarrassing, to say the least. The recordings of proceedings are available on YouTube for verification.

One can justifiably conclude that Otumfuo is trying at ALL COST, to find a reason to block Dr. K K Sarpong’s nomination. But we think the Overlord of Asanteman should eschew bias and exhibit fairness towards the Ashyirem Royal family and Offinsoman. Truth is that since we revere Otumfuo it would have been disrespectful to have challenged his pronouncements while he was sitting in State. However, it is only fair that very obvious errors which undermine the rights of the Ashyirem royals including Dr. K. K. Sarpong, ought to be corrected.

Intimidation of Queen Mother, Kingmakers and Dr. K.K Sarpong
It appears that Otumfuo’s strategy has been to intimidate Offinsohemaa, Offinso kingmakers and Dr. K. K. Sarpong into submission. Is this not contrary to the very principles on which Asanteman was founded and built? Wherein lies the “ ka bi na menka bi” mantra? Asanteman should be fair to all of its citizens at all times. We humbly appeal to Otumfuo not to wage a personal vendetta on anyone so as to get his will to prevail. Rather, justice should be done to all manner of persons to honour the Golden Stool and in line with his own oath.

We wish to reiterate that the selection and nomination of Dr K. K. Sarpong was done within the norms of Asante customs and traditions from the presentation of drinks to Abusuapanin Atta Kwabena through to the Queenmother, Kingmakers and final acceptance and approval.

In line with Asante customs and traditions, which and often hammered by Otumfuo himself, he (Otumfuo) does not select and enstool any Omanhene. This is also the spirit of the Asante Confederacy which protects the identity of each paramountcy. Otumfuo and Asanteman Council are invited to resolve misunderstandings in the process of enstoolment but not to undermine a process which has gone the full length without any blemish.

Of serious concern also is the fact that Nananom Amanhene have not come to the rescue of Offinsohemaa and her elders in the face of the unjustified humiliation she is being subjected to. Nananom may have to take note that a similar unfair spectacle could befall them in their paramouncies if they fail to voice out their displeasure in this case.

Hatched Plot against Dr. K. K. Sarpong in a Leaked Video
In a deliberate and desperate attempt to give credence to the ridiculous curse tag on Dr. K. K. Sarpong, one of the petitioners and others are captured in a video dramatizing the curse plot. For avoidance of doubt, we have the video in our possession, and it can also be accessed on Social Media.

It appears the issues concocted in the video which formed the basis of submissions of the petitioner before the Kumawuhene’s Committee, are those being held on to by Otumfuo. Unfortunately, it is an undisputed fact that the actors in the video are long-time friends and paternal relatives of Otumfuo. We do not want to believe that these people have had any influence on Otumfuo’s hardline position

    Unfounded Bribery Allegations
Accusations of bribery have been leveled against the Queen Mother, Kingmakers and elders of Offinso, Dr. K. K. Sarpong and even some Asante Chiefs by Otumfuo at some Asanteman Council sittings. This is unfortunate, and an attempt to give a dog a bad name and hang it. In Akan tradition (Asante inclusive), lobbying is part of the processes in selecting a chief whereby candidates approach Kingmakers and elders to get support.

It is customary for a candidate to present drinks and boamu ade3 (token cash) when he visits a chief, be he a kingmaker or not, to solicit for support and blessings. Such presentations cannot, obviously, be construed as bribery. We believe that all Asante Chiefs (including Otumfuo himself) went through similar processes before ascending their stools. Was this bribery? Why should similar acts by Dr K. K. Sarpong be seen differently? Is that meant to tarnish his image?

We know our Queen Mother is NOT selling the Wiafe stool, but rather getting a very formidable royal, Dr. K. K. Sarpong, to occupy it to ensure progress in Offinso. The calibre, credibility, principles and good standing of Dr. K. K Sarpong in Offinso, Beposo, Ghana and world at large speaks for itself. We are of the view that Dr. K. K. Sarpong has been unfairly treated regarding contrived allegations of bribery. We respectfully believe that our revered Asantehene has been misinformed in many aspects during the process.

Commendation of Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko
Nana AMa Serwaa Nyarko, our Queen mother has to be commended instead of being molested, intimidated and vilified. Unlike many Queen mothers who select their own sons to be chiefs, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko is a different breed. She has made a bold and selfless decision in selecting Dr. K. K. Sarpong although she could have chosen one of her own two biological sons.

Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko has demonstrated her love for Offinso and its future progress by the choice she made despite her direct nephews being among the contestants. It is a rare decision which deserves praise instead of humiliation and vilification as seen at Asanteman Council. Once again, we thank Nana Serwaa Nyarko for thinking about the future of Offinso. Nanahemaa wonkwa so!

    Conclusion
In conclusion, we the Ashyirem royals find the curse tag misplaced. As Ashyirem royals we know that Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong is our blood as confirmed by the Kumawuhene Committee and overwhelmingly endorsed by the Asanteman Council. We take this opportunity to humbly request the Asanteman Council to reconsider the misplaced curse tag and the other reasons resulting in the Offinso chieftaincy stalemate.

We thank you for your attention in listening to our side of the story. God bless Offinso. God bless us all.

  • BoG foreign reserves to increase to $7.7bn in 2025 – Fitch

BoG foreign reserves to increase to $7.7bn in 2025 – Fitch

Fitch, the ratings agency, has projected an increase in the foreign reserves of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to reach $7.7 billion by 2025, up from $4.4 billion in 2022. This would provide a three-month import cover.

The agency stated, “Current account surpluses and projected disbursements from international financial institutions will increase Bank of Ghana’s foreign reserves by an estimated $1.1 billion per year in 2023-2025, after a $4.4 billion fall in 2022, reaching $7.7 billion (about three months of current external payments) in 2025, from 1.6 months in 2022.”

Fitch also expects a current account surplus of 1.1% of GDP in 2023, compared to a 2.1% deficit in 2022, driven by non-payment of interest on selected external debt pending a restructuring and a notable reduction in merchandise imports.

The agency anticipates that the current account will remain in surplus in 2024 and 2025, with the value of the cedi against the dollar expected to strengthen as a result.

However, Fitch believes that another round of local-currency debt exchange is unlikely in the near future. These debt exchanges have led to a debt service reduction of ¢52 billion in 2023, equivalent to about 6% of estimated 2023 GDP or 39% of estimated 2023 revenue and grants.

As of August 2023, Ghana’s Gross International Reserves (GIR), excluding Encumbered Assets and Petroleum Fund, stood at $2.08 billion, providing approximately 1.0 month of import cover. According to the Bank of Ghana’s September 2023 Summary of Economic and Financial Data, reserves increased from $1.406 billion (0.7 months of import cover) in April 2023 to $2.162 billion (1.0 month of import cover) in May 2023, and $2.235 billion in June 2023 (1.0 month of import cover).

Reserves remained at $2.239 billion (1.0 month of import cover) in July 2023 and $2.089 billion (1.0 month of import cover) in August 2023.

  • IMF Executive Board likely to meet in November over Ghana’s bailout package

IMF Executive Board likely to meet in November over Ghana’s bailout package

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has indicated that the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Executive Board is set to deliberate on Ghana’s approval for the second tranche of the Extended Credit Facility in the third week of November 2023.

He expressed the government’s optimism that the Official Creditor Committee (OCC) and the Paris Club would come to an agreement, allowing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the release of the second tranche, which amounts to $600 million of the total $3 billion bailout package.

Ofori-Atta emphasized the critical nature of the period until year-end in steering Ghana toward economic stability during his speech at the inaugural Ghana Mutual Prosperity Dialogues (GMPD) held in Accra on November 2.

“This period between now and the year-end are critical. We do have the budget on November 15 [2023], the IMF Board meeting on November 22 and in between, we are also negotiating with the Independent Power Producers to get stability in our energy sector and we are hopeful that this would be done by the end of November [2023],” the Finance Minister said.

“We have also initiated discussions with our Eurobond investors and gave them broad contours for what we would like to see and they have also brought us some illustrative scenarios to consider. I believe that by year-end, we should be able to conclude on those and therefore set 2024 to work on the issues of the private sector to ensure the economy continues to strengthen,” he added.

Mr. Ofori-Atta also highlighted that the Ghana Mutual Prosperity Dialogues (GMPD) has the goal of realigning the government’s strategy to foster closer partnerships with the private sector, including both domestic and foreign players, development partners, labor, and the government.

The GMPD’s primary objectives are to enhance Ghana’s business environment, attract more foreign direct investment (FDI), and elevate the nation’s competitiveness.

By promoting cooperation between the public and private sectors, the GMPD aims to unlock investment opportunities and stimulate economic growth in Ghana.

The Ministry of Finance is the driving force behind this initiative, responsible for FDI dialogues in the country, with support from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), which offers facilitation and technical assistance to the government.

  • NPP presidential aspirants sign pact barring resignation from party after Nov. 4 primaries

NPP presidential aspirants sign pact barring resignation from party after Nov. 4 primaries

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has announced that the four candidates vying for the flagbearer position have signed an agreement barring any candidate from breaking away from the party after the November 4 primaries.

He made this known after a meeting by the NPP National Council of Elders held on November 2, 2023, that saw two main contenders, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, exchange pleasantries.

Mr Frimpong Kodua revealed that the candidates; Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Agric Minister, Dr Owusu Akoto Afriyie, former MP for Mampong Francis Addai-Nimoh, have signed an agreement stating that following the primaries, “candidates will accept election primary results, promote peace and cohesion.”

“In the event that they don’t win, they will not resign from the party. They will support the winner of the election primary. Ensure and enforce mechanisms established by the party and also to work within the timelines and durations that has been established by the party from now till the results are declared and to respect the decision by the delegate of our party,” he added.

This initiative is believed to be a lesson learnt by the ruling party after the exit of its former presidential aspirant and former Trade Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen.

On September 25, 2023, Mr Kyerematen announced his decision to break away from the party and run as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Prior to this, on September 5, he declared his withdrawal from the presidential race, citing reasons such as electoral irregularities, unfair treatment, and bias during the super delegates’ conference held on August 26, 2023.

During the August 2023 Special Delegates conference, Alan secured a third-place position with fewer than 100 votes out of the total of over 900 votes.

On the matter, Mr Frimpong Kodua noted that the party had lost a great personality and was disappointed by the fact that Mr Kyerematen did not inform the leadership of the party of his decision before making his decision public.

Now ahead of the race, there have been speculations that one of the candidates, Kennedy Agyapong, who has faced off with some members of the party during his campaign, will exit the party should he not be elected flagbearer.

But the Assin Central MP has refuted this claim.

Over 208,000 delegates will cast their votes in all 270 constituencies across the country to choose one candidate from among the four aspirants.

The delegates, who constitute the Electoral College, include Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives, ministers and their deputies, founding members of the NPP, members of the party’s National Council, as well as patrons and council of elders.

The voting centres for the primaries include:  Western Sekondi Gyandu Park (Sekondi), Central Cape Coast South Robert Mensah Stadium, Korley Klottey YMCA (Greater Accra), Mawuli Senior High School (Volta Ho Central), SEC/TEC SCH ( Eastern New Juaben South, Koforidua), ST. Louis College of Education (Ashanti Manhyia South), John Bitar Club House Dwinasen 1 (Western North Sefwi Wiawso), Presby Primary A&B Goaso (Ahafo Asunafo North).

The others are: Bono Sunyani West Odomaseman SHS (Odomase), Bono East Techiman South S.D.A Primary School (Techiman), Dambai Training College (Oti Krachi East), Central Jubilee Park (Northern Tamale), Savannah Damongo Community Center (Damongo), Wa Technical School (Upper West Wa Municipal),  North East Nalerigu-Gambaga Zobzia Primary School (Gambaga) and House of Chiefs (Upper East Bolgatanga Central)

Mr Justin Frimpong Kodua has confirmed that all necessary preparations have been made to ensure a smooth and successful electoral process on Saturday.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, November 1, he mentioned that the NPP fully supports the Ghana Police Service in providing robust security for the election, with no interference or hindrance.

“And I also indicated our fullest support to the Ghana Police Service, that on Saturday they are in charge, they are supposed to make sure there is maximum security in and around where the voting will be taking place in all the 277 centers that we are going to have the election. On that day, I have also given them the assurance that as a party we will comport ourselves very well, and nobody even from the presidency to the national party will have the right to interfere with the work that will be done by the Electoral Commission or the Ghana Police Service.”

He added that, “Anyone who makes any attempt to cause any havoc or chaos there should be arrested by the Ghana Police Service. So, I am sure that the police will be up to the task and we are looking forward to have a very successful primary on Saturday.”

The General Secretary explained that all concerns related to the delegates’ album or register have been resolved, and all the aspirants are content with the resolution.

While aspirants have faced accusations of attempting to influence delegates through monetary means, they have consistently denied these claims, asserting that the funds are primarily provided to delegates for their transportation and meals.

Nonetheless, the General Secretary of the party has stated that anyone found engaging in any form of inducement at the voting locations will be handed over to the police. He underscored that the winner of the election will be determined by merit rather than financial influence.

“Some people will also be disappointed because I don’t know how about 203,00 delegates, as aspirant will be able to give maybe 200 cedis or 300 cedis to each of them. I believe the election on Saturday will be determined based on merit, based on the people’s perception and how an aspirant has been able to sell his message to the delegates. I don’t think ‘monecracy will play any role on Saturday. Our focus is to have a transparent election, and I can assure you money will not determine who will win the election.”

  • Tell us who made $800m offer to you – Opare-Ansah dares Kennedy Agyapong

Tell us who made $800m offer to you – Opare-Ansah dares Kennedy Agyapong

A member of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Frederick Opare-Ansah, has challenged Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, to name and shame the said individual from the Vice President’s camp who offered him $800 million should he withdraw from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race.

In an interview on Time FM on Sunday, October 29, 2023, Ken Agyapong alleged that he was offered $800 million to withdraw from the party’s race for Dr. Bawumia.

“Does he know the number of people who have approached me but for the love of Ghana and the delegates I have said I will never do it? The money they offered is $800 million if he doesn’t know. He should ask Mr. Oppong Bio if that is what they are saying but I said no, I will not step down, Ghana first. In 2016, you people were not able to buy pickups. How come today you are able to offer me $800 million? So I said I won’t step down…” he stated.

He made the claim after Frederick Opare-Ansah alleged that Mr Kennedy Agyapong demanded the supply of contracts to the tune of $500 million annually to withdraw from the New Pariotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race.

“We had a discussion and I told him we should have a conversation on radio so I disclose the Ghanaian people why he is contesting this very election. He went to Dr (Bawumia) to give him about $500m worth of contracts if he becomes president annually. And doc refused and said he will contest him. It happened. Oppong Bio informed me. I would have also said these comments but I won’t say that,” he said.

Currently, the Bawumia camp has refuted the claims that the Vice President has made any offer to the Assin Central MP.

In an interview on Citi TV’s Face to Face show, Frederick Opare-Ansah challenged Mr Agyapong to come forward with the identity of the individual behind the offer.

He also provided more details to buttress his $500 million worth of contract claims against Mr Agyapong.

He noted that his source of information, Oppong Bio, a member of Ken Agyapong’s campaign who made known to him the proposal made by his candidate, engaged him in September 2022 at his residence on the Agbogba road.

“It was in September 2022, in his house on the Agbobga road. I want to protect the identity of one person because he is a businessman. He would not want his name out there. We were four there. The other guy is one Sam, who is also part of the campaign of Kennedy. He (Oppong Bio) said this and laughed that if they were to make that offer to Kennedy today, he would find some good reason to tell the campaign team and then stop,” he said.

“Let Kennedy tell us who in the DMB campaign made the officer. When Kennedy is lying, he uses they but when he has real facts, he mentions names.

Give me $500m contracts every year and I will step down – Ken Agyapong’s alleged demand to Bawumia

A member of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Frederick Opare-Ansah, has alleged that Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has demanded the supply of contracts to the tune of $500 million annually to withdraw from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race.

In his submissions on Wontumi TV, he disclosed that prior to Dr Bawumia announcing his decision to contest for the flagbearer position, Mr Agyapong engaged the Vice President and made the aforementioned demand.

According to Frederick Opare-Ansah, Dr Bawumia refuted the proposal and decided to contest to represent the NPP during the 2024 general elections.

This allegation comes at a time when Mr Agyapong has himself levelled some strong claims pointing to money inducement.

According to the Assin Central MP, he has been offered $800 million to drop out from the NPP presidential elections.

But this claim has been refuted by many including the campaign team of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The program will provide technicians and trainers from service partners and other automakers with both theoretical and practical training, incorporating classroom instruction, hands-on training, and the use of cutting-edge diagnostic equipment and software.

NPP Primaries: Bawumia, Ken Agyapong exchange ‘brotherly handshake’ at NPP Council of Elders meeting

Ahead of the much-anticipated New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries slated for November 4, two main contenders have been sighted engaging in a cordial gesture.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, considered the frontrunner in the flagbearer race, and Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, tipped to give the Veep a run for his money, exchanged pleasantries during a Council of Elders meeting.

In a video on social media platform X, the two leaders shook hands heartily. The Vice President smiled as he shook the hands of his contender.

Mr Agyapong’s posture read as one who was happy to see an ally. The handshake was indeed pleasant.

This goes to quash claims that the two individuals are engaged in a “beef”. This is due to allegations and rebuttals between the camps of Dr Bawumia and Mr Agyapong.

Mr Agyapong recently claimed that he was offered $800 million to step down from the race. In response, the camp of Dr Bawumia noted that they have not engaged Mr Agyapong and have also not made such an offer.

  • Paternity test: Asamoah Gyan was afraid to become like Odartey Lamptey

Paternity test: Asamoah Gyan was afraid to become like Odartey Lamptey

The legal representative of the renowned Ghanaian footballer, Asamoah Gyan, Edwin Kusi Appiah, has revealed the pivotal statement that prompted his client to initiate divorce annulment proceedings.

In an interview with Kofi TV, Kusi Appiah disclosed that Gyan had been receiving threats from the husband of his now former spouse, suggesting that his three children were not biologically related to him.

The statement that shattered the peace and triggered discord in Gyan’s marriage, ultimately leading to the decision to seek an annulment, was an alleged threat made by the husband of Gifty Oware. This threat revolved around their firstborn child, who, as per Edwin Kusi Appiah, was born in 2005 and was claimed not to be Gyan’s biological child.

Consequently, upon learning of this statement, Asamoah Gyan collected evidence and initiated legal proceedings to annul the marriage.

Asamoah Gyan married his wife in 2013 but had been with her since 2003. He got information that prior to marrying her, the lady had married another man. Their marriage had three kids with the firstborn coming in 2005. Asamoah Gyan told me he was threatened by someone that the children, particularly the firstborn were not his and that they belonged to him (the person issuing the threat).

“That is what forced us to go to court and seek permission to conduct DNA on the kids. Thankfully, the DNA test proved that Gyan was the father of the children and he was really happy with it. Gyan was happy because he loved the children. That is the main reason Asamoah Gyan went to court,” he said.

In 2019, former national youth star, Nii Odartey Lamptey disclosed that he felt unbearable pain after a DNA test confirmed rumors that three children he raised with his ex-wife for 21 years were not his biological children.

According to Lawyer Kusi Appiah, Asamoah Gyan holds deep affection for the children and is content with the court’s decision.

In an interview with Asempa FM, Kusi Appiah further clarified that Asamoah Gyan initiated the paternity tests because of persistent pressure from Gifty Oware’s former husband, identified as Mr. Oware. Mr. Oware, who resides in the UK, repeatedly asserted that Gifty Oware bore the children during her marriage to him, raising doubts about their paternity and prompting the need for the tests.

“When the DNA test proved that all kids were his, Asamoah Gyan was extremely happy. He was happy because he had been challenged by someone that his wife wasn’t his and that at the time they married, the wife was also married to another person. The person even told Asamoah Gyan that he suspects some of the children were his.

“The right thing for Gyan to have done was to make sure that he conducted a DNA test to prove the paternity of the children. When people were criticizing Gyan for being irresponsible, he was jubilating because he had been vindicated.”

In a verdict delivered by the Accra High Court on October 31, 2023, the prolonged divorce case of former Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan concluded. The court ruled to terminate the marriage that was entered into by Gyan and Gifty in 2013.

As part of the court’s judgment, determinations were made regarding the parentage of the three children of the couple. Gyan had previously contested his paternity, leading to a Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) test, which ultimately confirmed his biological relationship with the children.

Dennis Law, wrote of the paternity issue in their report: “Initially, Asamoah Gyan had denied paternity of their three children, seeking an annulment of their marriage. However, the court, in its decision on October 31, 2023, established that the three children are indeed the progeny of Asamoah Gyan.”

Other consequential directions relative to the upkeep of the kids after the dissolution of the marriage included that “Asamoah Gyan is obligated to pay Gifty Gyan a monthly sum of 25,000 Ghana cedis.

“This stipend is allocated for the upbringing and welfare of the three children, excluding expenses such as school fees, medical and dental care, flight tickets, and various other childcare-related costs,” the law firm added.

Mourners attending funeral of Boko Haram victims killed by terrorist group

Police in northeastern Nigeria have reported that a militant Islamist group, Boko Haram, has killed 20 individuals who were returning from the burial of victims of a prior attack by the insurgents.

This tragic incident occurred in Yobe state when a vehicle carrying mourners detonated an explosive device planted by the insurgents.

Just the day before, the militants launched an attack on Gurokayeya village, resulting in the death of 17 people. According to the police, Boko Haram orchestrated these attacks in response to the villagers’ refusal to pay a so-called “harvest tax.”

Boko Haram militants have been repeatedly accused of extorting payments from residents in northeastern Nigeria, using the funds to sustain their operations and exert control over local communities.

“This is one of the most horrific attacks by Boko Haram in recent times. For a burial group to be attacked shortly after the loss of their loved ones is beyond horrific,” resident Idris Geidam told the Associated Press news agency.

Yobe police spokesman Dungus Abdulkarim said that 10 members of the burial group died on the spot while another 10 died at a health centre where they were rushed to for treatment.

The incident occurred on Tuesday – a day after the deadly raid on Gurokayeya village.

The attacks are the first major assault that Boko Haram has waged in Yobe in more than a year.

State authorities said they suspected that the militants had arrived from neighbouring Borno state, where Boko Haram has carried out several attacks against civilians this year.

Much of Borno, the birthplace of Boko Haram, is still considered too dangerous to travel by road.

The group launched its insurgency in 2009, with aid agencies reporting that more than two million people have been displaced in the conflict.

The militant group has also extended its reach into neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, with government forces failing to defeat the group.

Boko Haram means “Western education is forbidden”, and it has repeatedly targeted secular schools as part of its attempts to establish its version of Islamic rule in the region.

The group gained notoriety internationally when it kidnapped more than 200 school girls from the north-eastern town of Chibok in 2014.

Oganisers of #OccupyJulorbiHouse demo to drag Police to court over human right abuses

Democracy Hub has decided to pursue legal action against the Ghana Police Service in response to alleged incidents of brutality against protesters during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest that took place on September 21, 2023.

This decision comes after the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, stated that the organizers had not substantiated their claims of assault by the police.

During a year-end dialogue session with various stakeholders, Dr. Dampare said “after months of completing that demonstration to today, not a shred of evidence has been brought up to indicate that the police have brutalised them.”

In a statement shared by #FixTheCountry on behalf of Democracy Hub on October 31, the group noted that the IGP received direct accounts of the brutality meted out to the protestors as well as the manner in which citizens devices were confiscated to prevent the filming of abuses.

“This can be confirmed by several independent persons who were in that meeting. Also, several videos and images in the public domain confirm the brutalities meted out to protestors including journalists and lawyers present on that day,” the statement added.

According to the group, the deem the IGP’s statement as “reckless” and one that reflects “a worrying institutional trend of disregarding proper procedure and standards.”

“We are also disappointed by the failure of the IGP to exhibit the critical leadership expected of his office as well as a commitment to standards reflective of the Ghana Police Service’s pivotal role in maintaining law and order,” the group further noted.

In view of this, the group has resolved to initiate immediate legal action against the Ghana Police Service “in connection with the violation of our constitutional rights to assembly, freedom from torture and inhumane treatment.”

    Background

The first day of the 3-day protest which ended on September 23, was marked by police arrests, with the protest being labeled an “unlawful assembly and violation of the Public Order Act.”

Numerous individuals, including journalists, protesters, and bystanders, recounted incidents of police brutality during the arrests.

A female reporter from Metro TV, Bridget Otoo, shared her experience of being manhandled by multiple police officers when she attempted to film the assault of a man who had been pulled from the entrance of the Accra Regional Police Command onto the premises.

She reported that some officers tugged at her shirt collar, while one officer attempted to seize her cell phone, with which she had captured the footage, from between her thighs as she tried to protect it from them.

In a separate account, Barker Vormawor, the protestor’s convenor, stated that he and other demonstrators were confined to a room at the Accra Regional Police Command, where 17 individuals, purportedly intelligence officers, were allowed into the room to physically assault them.

The second and third days of the protest were relatively peaceful, with no reports of abuse or assault against any protestor by the police.

  • Bangladesh sees violence as election looms

Bangladesh sees violence as election looms

Bangladesh is currently experiencing a surge of political tension that has erupted into protests and violence, leaving the country in a state of unease as it approaches general elections scheduled for January.

The situation escalated when several senior opposition leaders were arrested the previous Sunday, following a massive rally against the government that turned violent, resulting in the deaths of at least two opposition supporters.

The main opposition, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has intensified its protests, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The BNP and its coalition partners are advocating for the formation of a neutral interim government before the general elections, asserting that free and fair polls cannot be conducted under Prime Minister Hasina’s leadership. However, the government, led by her Awami League, has rejected this demand.

The BNP’s rally in the capital city, Dhaka, drew tens of thousands of participants, making it one of the largest gatherings in a decade. Unfortunately, the event turned violent, with police firing rubber bullets and tear gas, and opposition supporters hurling stones and bricks.

The streets in the capital were left littered with the remnants of sound grenades, tear gas canisters, and shattered glass. Both sides have accused each other of initiating the violence.

“The opposition supporters attacked police, journalists, hospitals, ambulances and the houses of the chief justice and other judges, creating chaos,” Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen told the BBC.

The BNP said it was the other way round.

“It was a peaceful and non-violent rally, but the government was baffled by the massive turnout. So, they decided to disrupt the meeting,” senior party leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury told the BBC.

“The rally was attacked from two sides. It resembled a war zone. So, we had to stop our public meeting midway.”

The ruling Awami League has firmly denied allegations that its supporters incited opposition activists participating in the rally.

In response to the police’s actions, the BNP initiated a three-day nationwide blockade, commencing on Tuesday. During the protests, demonstrators set fire to buses and clashed with security forces in various locations. To disperse the crowds, police resorted to using tear gas and rubber bullets. On Tuesday, clashes with the police resulted in the deaths of two opposition activists. As a result of the unrest, most vehicles have refrained from venturing onto the roads due to concerns about violence.

Political turmoil is not an uncommon occurrence in Bangladesh, and over the years, political parties have resorted to street protests to press their demands.

These actions have led to shutdowns, violence, and loss of life. In recent years, the political divide in the country has widened, with the bitterness between parties intensifying.

The Awami League is currently in its second decade in power and is seeking a fourth consecutive five-year term. Both major political parties appear reluctant to engage in dialogue, and the prospects for meaningful discussions before the upcoming elections seem slim.

‘Depressed’ Cornell student who threatened to murder Jews held up in jail

A student at a New York college has been detained and appeared in court, facing accusations of making violent threats against Jewish students.

Patrick Dai, 21, is alleged to have threatened to bring a gun to Cornell University’s campus, commit acts of violence against Jewish women, and harm Jewish infants.

The engineering student, appearing in court in an orange jumpsuit, has been charged with making threats to kill or harm others using interstate communications, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison.

During the court proceedings in Syracuse, New York, on Wednesday, Mr. Dai’s mother was present, and she appeared to make an effort to establish eye contact with her son. The prosecution, represented by Geoffrey Brown, requested that Mr. Dai be kept in custody, pointing out that he had visited a campus dining hall before allegedly posting threats about causing violence. Mr. Dai chose to forgo his right to a bail hearing.

The initial report on a series of antisemitic comments, which were posted on the Greekrank website, was first brought to public attention by The Cornell Daily Sun, the university’s newspaper. Greekrank, while not officially affiliated with the university, is a platform used by many of its students, primarily focusing on fraternity and sorority life across various campuses.

One post from the commenter named “hamas” was titled “if i see another jew”.

Mr Dai’s parents told the New York Post that their son suffers from “severe depression”.

“He cannot control his emotion well due to the depression,” Mr Dai’s father, who asked not to be named, told the newspaper in a text message.

“No, I don’t think he committed the crime. He told us he lost his life goal and motivation. As parents, we tried to give him more love.”

Mr Dai’s father said he and his wife lost communication with their son in the days before his arrest.

They had attempted to contact him, he said, worried he might commit suicide.

In a statement, Cornell University said: “We remain shocked by and condemn these horrific, antisemitic threats and believe they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

The university said that police will maintain a heightened security presence on campus in the coming days.

Molly Goldstein, co-president of the Cornell Center for Jewish Living, told CNN: “Jewish students on campus right now are unbelievably terrified for their lives.”

The threats against Cornell’s Jewish community came amid reports of rising antisemitic incidents around the country.

Speaking to a congressional committee on Tuesday, FBI Director Christopher Wray told lawmakers that antisemitic abuse was reaching “historic levels” in the US.

“Our statistics would indicate that for a group that represents only about 2.4% of the American public, they account for something like 60% of all religious-based hate crimes,” Mr Wray said of Jewish Americans.

He noted that this figure had probably risen since the Israel-Gaza conflict erupted on 7 October.

  • Let’s expect govt to blame Israeli-Palestinian conflict for Ghana’s economic crisis – Arthur Kennedy

Let’s expect govt to blame Israeli-Palestinian conflict for Ghana’s economic crisis – Arthur Kennedy

A prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Arthur Kennedy, has voiced his concerns about the government’s habit of using external factors such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, COVID-19, and the Russian-Ukraine war as excuses for Ghana’s economic challenges.

He emphasized the government’s reliance on these external factors to explain its economic difficulties, even though it has received substantial external funding and imposed a COVID-19 tax.

Dr. Arthur Kennedy made these remarks during an interview with Accra-based Citi TV on November 1.

“I have heard that very soon, the NPP [government] will add the Israeli-Palestinian war to the list of excuses [it already has]. Let’s be serious: as a result of COVID-19, the government received $3 billion from external funders. In addition to that, the government imposed a COVID tax that it has yet to remove, yet we keep making COVID the excuse.”

These statements come after positive remarks made about Ghana’s economy by the Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva.

She acknowledged significant economic advancements and expressed optimism regarding the disbursement of a $600 million IMF fund tranche. This disbursement is seen as a key factor in enhancing confidence in Ghana’s economic stability.

Government has on numerous occasions blamed the crippling economy on external factors such as COVID-19, Russia-Ukraine war among others.

This has not sat well with a number of Ghanaians, particularly the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) who believe the government is trying to evade accountability and its responsibility.

Gaza sees fierce fighting, more civilians prepare to leave

Overnight, Gaza experienced intense fighting, with a live feed capturing the sounds of explosions and bright flames on the horizon.

The Israeli military reported that it had killed dozens of Hamas fighters, and earlier, they stated that their troops had successfully breached the group’s defensive lines.

Today, more civilians are expected to leave Gaza through the Rafah crossing. The UN noted that more than 400 people used the crossing yesterday, marking the first time since the conflict began.

In response to a heckler during a speech, US President Joe Biden emphasized the need for a “pause” in the fighting to facilitate the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Since the 7th of October, when Hamas attacks killed 1,400 people and resulted in the kidnapping of 239 individuals, Israel has been conducting airstrikes in Gaza.

According to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza, more than 8,700 people have been killed since Israel’s retaliatory bombings began.

The ministry now reports that 9,061 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the current conflict began on 7 October.

Among the casualties, 3,760 are children, and over 32,000 others have been injured.

The bank’s total assets expanded by 21% year-on-year, amounting to ¢25.4 billion. • We are ready for NPP primaries, any form of chaos and vote-buying will be resisted – JFK

We are ready for NPP primaries, any form of chaos and vote-buying will be resisted – JFK

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is preparing for its presidential primary, scheduled for Saturday, November 4, to select a flagbearer for the 2024 general election.

Additionally, the Electoral College encompasses regional party officials, constituency officials, constituency patrons, constituency elders, electoral area coordinators, polling station executives, overseas branches, and members of Tescon, the party’s tertiary students’ wing.

The delegates will have the opportunity to choose from among four aspirants, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Agriculture Minister Dr. Akoto Afriyie, and former MP Francis Addai-Nimo.

During an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express on November 2, the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua (JFK), confirmed that all necessary preparations have been made to ensure a smooth and successful electoral process on Saturday.

“With a few days left, I can tell you and the party’s rank and file that we are ready. The Electoral Commission is ready, the Ghana Police Service is also ready, and I believe that delegates and the aspirants themselves are also ready.”

He mentioned that the NPP fully supports the Ghana Police Service in providing robust security for the election, with no interference or hindrance.

“We have never had a perfect election in this world, and we always learn from the previous ones and improve on the future ones. About a week ago, the party, the Electoral Commission and the Ghana Police Service together with the aspirants, had a meeting at the Police headquarters, and we were all clear in our minds about the role that the Ghana Police Service will be playing on Saturday.

“The final album has now been given to the Electoral Commission to bring it on the day of the polls” Mr Kodua noted.

During the party’s super delegates’ conference, there were widespread allegations of financial inducement, especially when the number of aspirants was reduced to five before former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen’s resignation, leaving four contenders.

Our focus is to have a transparent election, and I can assure you money will not determine who will win the election.

He did emphasize, however, that any form of inducement occurring within the voting area will be reported to the police.

He also issued a stern warning that individuals attempting to reveal their voting choices from the booth and make them public will face legal consequences, including being reported to the police.

  • Kennedy Agyapong is not a man, he runs away when he sees me – Opare-Ansah

Kennedy Agyapong is not a man, he runs away when he sees me – Opare-Ansah

A member of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Frederick Opare-Ansah, has accused presidential aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, of being a coward.

Frederick Opare-Ansah noted that, just like a barking dog never bites, Mr Agyapong has never been able to come face-to-face with individuals he has threatened or accused.

According to Frederick Opare-Ansah, Mr Agyapong has been careful enough not to include his name in his propaganda politics, but anything short of this will lead to fierce contention, which he believes will drive the Assin Central MP out of the Central Region.

In an interview on Wontumi radio, Frederick Opare-Ansah said: “If he jokes with me, I will sack him from his region. I will make him run away from his own constituency.

“If he has not heard about me, he should ask about me. Maybe he has not heard about me. I will be in Assin Central Nov 4, if he is a man he should meet me there. I am not going there with a fight, but he is saying …have you not heard some of his people record a video and threaten anyone who will vote against [Kennedy Agyapong] in the constituency.

“We too we have people over there who are prepared to vote for Dr [Bawumia]. I am also going over there to protect our people, with the police. Today we met with the police and this was part of the things we discussed.

“We told them that nobody can sit in this country and behave as if, no one can enter a particular town. If so would you ever be able to pass through Suhum? Kennedy. The other day when he went to Suhum, when he was speaking against me, they asked him to mention a name, if he had made a mistake and mentioned my name he would have seen what would have happened to him.”

He therefore asserted that “He (Kennedy Agyapong) is not a man.” “Kennedy Agyapong, when he meets me, runs away. He is not a man. When we talk about men in the NPP, is he recognized?,” he added.

In Frederick Opare-Ansah’s view, Mr Agyapong is on a personal mission where he seeks to benefit from everything at the expense of others. He also alleged that the Assin Central MP plans to destroy the ruling NPP, an alleged initiative he said would be contested fiercely.

“There are men in the NPP. no one is afraid of him. He shouldn’t think he can destroy the party. We will use this party to fix Ghana. All this while, your thinking is, if I’m not going to benefit, then it can person,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Mr Ken Agyapong has refuted claims that it has become his sole duty to destroy the party over his presidential ambitions.

  • Disney set to purchase remaining 33% stake in Hulu

Disney set to purchase remaining 33% stake in Hulu

Disney has confirmed its widely anticipated decision to acquire the remaining 33% stake in the streaming service Hulu from TV giant Comcast, thus obtaining full ownership of the platform.

This move allows Disney to integrate Hulu into its Disney+ platform.

As Disney has faced increasing competition in the streaming industry and experienced a decline in profits, this strategic acquisition solidifies its position in the market.

Completing its takeover of Hulu is expected to cost some $8.6bn (£7bn), Disney said in a statement.

Furthermore, Disney stated that this strategic move is aimed at advancing its streaming goals and expanding its subscriber base.

In the United States, Disney already offers Hulu as part of bundled packages along with its Disney+ and ESPN+ platforms.

In the UK, certain Hulu content is already accessible via the Disney+ app, including shows like “The Kardashians” and “The Bear.”

The price tag reflects a “guaranteed floor value” for the streaming service that was established when California-based Disney took over Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox in a huge deal in 2019, along with a majority stake in Hulu.

Under an agreement between Disney and Comcast that year, both firms had the right to force a sale of Comcast’s stake in Hulu – and executives have been vocal about wanting to do a deal.

But at a conference this year, Comcast chief executive Brian Roberts described Hulu as a “scarce kingmaker asset”, which was “way more valuable today” due to its hits like the series Only Murders in the Building.

Disney reported in August that profits continued to fall as it faced a raft of issues including lacklustre film performance and a sharp drop in advertising sales in its traditional television business.

The company reported a 4% year-on-year increase in revenue for the three months ending on July 1. However, it also posted a loss of $460 million, a significant contrast to the $1.4 billion profit from the corresponding period in the previous year.

Disney, alongside other streaming platforms, has been exploring methods to increase revenue and address the issue of password-sharing.

Additionally, the film and television industry has encountered disruptions due to strikes in the US, resulting in delays in producing new content to engage audiences. A senior Disney creative responsible for works like “Frozen” expressed concerns to the BBC about the potential impact of the actors’ strike on animation production later this year.

  • Shell records $6.2bn profit between July and Sept.

Shell records $6.2bn profit between July and Sept.

Shell, the oil and gas giant, has reported robust profits, primarily due to the recent increase in oil prices.

In the period between July and September, the energy company recorded earnings of $6.2 billion (£5.1 billion), a significant improvement from the previous quarter.

Comparatively, profits were lower than the $9.4 billion reported in the same period last year when oil and gas prices surged due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Although current oil prices remain below those levels, they have shown recent increases.

The rise in oil prices is largely attributed to production cuts by members of the OPEC+ group, aimed at stabilizing the market. The World Bank recently warned that ongoing conflicts in the Middle East could push crude oil prices up to $150 per barrel, in contrast to the current price of $85.

Shell’s earnings for the past three months surged by 23% compared to the previous quarter, benefiting from higher oil prices, increased oil and gas production, and improved returns from refining and gas trading.

The energy sector experienced a surge in oil prices in 2022 followed by a subsequent decline earlier this year, which led to reduced profits for energy companies. However, the cost of crude oil has once again been on the rise since production cuts were implemented in the summer.

The production cuts were introduced by OPEC+ members, led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, as they expressed concerns about weakening global demand.

Moscow also attributed the need for cuts to Western “interference with market dynamics,” referencing restrictions placed on Russian oil following its invasion of Ukraine.

  • Some National Service Personnel to be deployed to sports institutions

Some National Service Personnel to be deployed to sports institutions

On Wednesday, November 1, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) and the National Service Scheme (NSS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

This collaborative effort aims to assign service personnel to key sports organizations to facilitate the transformation and advancement of Ghana’s sports sector.

After the MoU signing, Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif highlighted the potential of these service personnel, who will contribute their expertise and skills in various areas such as marketing, physiotherapy, psychology, finance, social media, and content creation, among others.

The Minister also expressed that the primary goal of this partnership is to enable the deployment of service personnel to different departments within these sports organizations as part of the Sports Support Module.

“The aim is to synergise academic knowledge with practical experience to enhance the positioning, promotion, and branding of our clubs and federations, enabling them to compete on a global scale.”

The Minister encouraged all stakeholders to seize the opportunities presented by this collaboration and work collectively to maximize its benefits. He emphasized that with a united effort, youth and sports development in Ghana could achieve unprecedented levels of success.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Service Scheme, Osei Assibey Antwi, acknowledged that this collaboration marks a pioneering initiative. He highlighted the importance of modern perspectives in sports institutions’ administration and branding. Antwi underscored the crucial role of marketing in sports clubs and believed that service personnel could devise innovative marketing strategies to promote local leagues and generate interest in them.

The signing ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including Eric Mensah-Bonsu, the Director of Finance and Administration at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mrs. Juliana Ado-yobo, the legal officer for the Ministry, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu – Asare, the Executive Chairman of the LOC-13th African Games, Ben Nunoo Mensah, the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Samson Deen, the President of the Ghana Paralympic Committee, Kudjoe Fianoo of GHALCA, Joseph Appiah, the Chief Accountant of the National Sports College, and Sarfo Oduro Nyarko, the administrative manager of GHALCA, among others.

This landmark partnership underscores Ghana’s dedication to promoting sports development, nurturing young talent, and bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application.

  • Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu loses retirement benefits after entry into active politics

Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu loses retirement benefits after entry into active politics

The Zambian government has revoked the retirement benefits and privileges of former President Edgar Lungu after he announced his return to active politics.

Mr Lungu had previously retired following his defeat by Hakainde Hichilema in the 2021 presidential election.

During his six years in office, Zambia faced severe economic challenges, becoming the most indebted nation in Africa. Lungu’s decision to re-enter politics sets the stage for a contentious presidential race in 2026.

Government spokesman Cornelius Mweetwa confirmed that Lungu had been informed of the immediate withdrawal of his retirement benefits and privileges. According to the law, former presidents who re-enter politics forfeit these entitlements.

As a retired president, Lungu enjoyed benefits such as security personnel, a diplomatic passport, state vehicles, a furnished residence, medical insurance, and funeral expenses. He also had immunity from prosecution.

Mweetwa announced in a press conference that Lungu would now be treated under the law like any other senior citizen of the country, highlighting the loss of special privileges.

Lungu’s return to politics is fueled by the growing dissatisfaction with the ongoing economic difficulties in Zambia under his successor’s leadership. Civil society groups have expressed concerns about the diminishing human rights freedoms in the country.

In his announcement of a political comeback, Lungu stated his intention to defend democracy in the country and save his factionalized former ruling party, the Patriotic Front, from potential collapse. The government has threatened to deregister the party due to leadership disputes.

The government spokesman refuted Lungu’s recent claims that supporters of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) were targeting him.

He described Mr Lungu’s remarks that his life had been threatened as a “mere false alarm”, saying the former leader was as secure “as any other citizen”.

Mr. Lungu has received a caution against engaging in confrontational politics against President Hichilema’s government. In the past month, he was advised to refrain from public jogging, with the police characterizing his weekly workouts as “political activism.”

It remains uncertain whether Mr. Lungu’s immunity from prosecution will be revoked. Zambia’s parliament has previously lifted immunity for two former presidents – Frederick Chiluba in 2002 and Rupiah Banda in 2013.

Certain members of the ruling UPND have been advocating for the removal of his immunity and his prosecution on alleged corruption charges during his presidency. Mr. Lungu has stated that these allegations are politically motivated.

Carabao Cup: Chelsea beat Blackburn Rover to advance to quarter final stage

Chelsea secured their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a win over Blackburn Rovers, setting up a home clash against Newcastle in the next round.

At Stamford Bridge, goals from Benoit Badiashile and Raheem Sterling were enough to defeat the Championship side. This marked Chelsea’s first home victory since their third-round win against Brighton in late September.

French center-back Badiashile, making his first start for Chelsea since May, opened the scoring in the 30th minute.

This came after Rovers’ keeper, Leopold Wahlstedt, deflected Conor Gallagher’s cross from a short corner right to Badiashile inside the penalty area.

Sterling doubled Chelsea’s lead with almost an hour gone, capitalizing on Cole Palmer’s interception and curling the ball into the far corner of the net.

Blackburn’s best opportunity came in the final moments, with substitute Arnor Sigurdsson played through, but his shot was thwarted by an excellent save from Chelsea’s goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez.

While Chelsea has faced challenges in the Premier League this season, currently sitting in 11th place with just three wins in 10 games, their Carabao Cup performances have provided a positive outlook. Progressing to the quarter-finals brings hope of potential silverware and serves as a timely boost for manager Mauricio Pochettino’s team.

118 Ukrainian towns and villages attacked by Russia – Kyiv

Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko has indicated that in a span of 24 hours, Russia launched an intense bombardment on 118 towns and villages in Ukraine. This represents the highest daily number of attacks this year.

Klymenko reported that this onslaught impacted 10 out of Ukraine’s 27 regions, resulting in casualties, including deaths and injuries. Many of the targeted communities were situated near the front lines in eastern and southern Ukraine.

For several weeks, Russia has been concentrating a significant portion of its military power on the strategically important town of Avdiivka in the eastern Donetsk region.

“[Avdiivka] is being erased, shattered. There have been more than 40 massive shelling attacks against the territorial community in the past day,” said local leader Vitaliy Barabash.

According to Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, two civilians lost their lives in the attacks, and he issued a warning that Russia appeared to be preparing for a third wave of its offensive. Ukraine has reported that Russia is amassing reinforcements in an attempt to encircle and capture the strategically significant town of Avdiivka.

On Tuesday, Ukrainian armed forces’ general staff announced that they successfully repelled twenty attacks in the Avdiivka area alone. Additionally, Russia has escalated its assaults on the town of Kupyansk in the northeastern Kharkiv region and has been attempting to prevent Ukrainian forces from reclaiming territory around Bakhmut.

There have also been attacks away from the front lines, including strikes on residential buildings, shops, and a pharmacy in the southern city of Nikopol on the banks of the Dnipro River. In Kremenchuk, a disused oil refinery was set on fire by a Russian drone. This refinery, located in the central Poltava region, has been targeted multiple times by Russian forces and continued to face attacks throughout the early hours of Wednesday.

Ukraine’s counter-offensive has encountered difficulties in reclaiming territory occupied by Russian forces in the south and east, raising concerns about waning Western support for the conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged the slow progress and has consistently urged Ukraine’s allies to provide advanced weaponry urgently while maintaining unity.

On Wednesday, Ukraine’s chief military commander, Zaluzhny, cautioned that the war was entering a “positional” or static stage.

Recent Ukrainian attacks targeted the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea fleet, leading to the departure of most of its ships from occupied Crimea.

Kyiv’s efforts have been focused on establishing a secure export corridor for civilian vessels to transport grain along Ukraine’s Black Sea coast. This route passes through Romanian waters and continues to the Turkish coast.

Despite ongoing Russian bombardment, approximately 700,000 metric tonnes of grain have successfully navigated the region in recent months. Ukrainian officials have reported that warplanes dropped “explosive objects” in areas where civilian ships were expected to pass. Nevertheless, Ukraine’s southern operational command has stated that the navigational corridor remains operational under the protection of the defense forces.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu asserted on Wednesday that Ukraine was losing the war, even though it had received new weapons from NATO.

Man United lose to Newcastle by 3 goals to nil

Newcastle United secured an impressive Carabao Cup fourth-round victory on Wednesday night at Old Trafford, defeating Manchester United for the first time since 2013. The goals from Miguel Almirón, Lewis Hall, and Joe Willock sealed their triumph.

Substitute Almirón scored the opening goal, finishing a well-crafted move initiated by Tino Livramento. Teenager Hall then volleyed in a superb second goal, giving Eddie Howe’s team a comfortable lead at half-time.

Although the hosts made a brief attempt to rally, Willock’s brilliantly taken third goal, in his first start since May, secured Newcastle’s spot in the quarter-finals. They convincingly eliminated the defending champions, who had defeated Newcastle in the 2022/23 final.

Newcastle faced an early setback when Matt Targett was forced off within four minutes, and Almirón was brought on as his replacement. Eddie Howe’s team has been dealing with a series of injuries in recent weeks.

While Casemiro had an early attempt saved by former Manchester United loanee Martin Dúbravka, Newcastle dominated possession early on. Almirón’s delicate touch and precise finish into the far corner extended their lead.

Mason Mount had a chance for a quick response but failed to find the target. Newcastle then added a second goal through Chelsea loanee Hall, who volleyed the ball beautifully into the bottom right-hand corner.

Manchester United made changes at half-time, showing more vigor in the second half. However, just after the hour mark, Willock sealed the victory with a magnificent goal. Despite his recent return from a six-month injury layoff, he showcased his skills by striking a powerful and precise shot into the bottom corner.

Newcastle came close to adding another goal when Sean Longstaff, captaining the team on his 150th appearance for the club, narrowly missed the target. Their place in the quarter-finals was all but confirmed by then.

West Ham beat Arsenal by 3 goals

In a mesmerizing second-half performance, West Ham United secured their spot in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a 3-1 victory over their Premier League counterparts, Arsenal.

The Hammers took the lead in the first half, thanks to an own-goal by Ben White, who inadvertently headed the ball into his own net from Jarrod Bowen’s corner. The second half saw West Ham strike again, this time with a stunning goal from Mohammed Kudus just five minutes in.

On the hour mark, Bowen added the third goal for West Ham, unleashing an unstoppable rocket into the net for his seventh goal of the season across all competitions.

Despite a late consolation goal by Arsenal‘s substitute, Martin Ødegaard, scored with virtually the final kick of the game at London Stadium, West Ham’s brilliant performance in front of a record-breaking crowd of 62,154 secured their place in the quarter-finals of the League Cup.

This marks the second time in three seasons that West Ham has reached this stage.

  • Afi Farma boss jailed 2 years, fined over $60,000 for child deaths linked to cough syrup

Afi Farma boss jailed 2 years, fined over $60,000 for child deaths linked to cough syrup

The boss and three other high-ranking officials of an Indonesian company responsible for a cough syrup associated with the deaths of over 200 children have been sentenced to prison.

They received two-year prison terms and fines of 1 billion Indonesian rupiah ($63,056; £51,786).

The company in question, Afi Farma, was accused of manufacturing cough syrups containing excessive amounts of harmful substances. Afi Farma’s legal representative stated that they denied any negligence, and the company was contemplating whether to lodge an appeal.

The prosecutors had originally sought a prison sentence of up to nine years for Afi Farma’s CEO, Arief Prasetya Harahap, and seven years for each of the other defendants.

According to the Public Prosecutor, between October 2021 and February 2022, the company received two batches of propylene glycol, typically used in cough syrup production.

However, these batches contained 96% to 99% ethylene glycol, a toxic substance. Both propylene glycol and ethylene glycol can serve as additives in solvents, but while propylene glycol is non-toxic and widely employed in medicines, cosmetics, and food, ethylene glycol is toxic and used in products like paint, pens, and brake fluid.

The company did not conduct tests on the ingredients used in the cough syrup and instead relied on quality and safety certificates from its supplier, as asserted by the prosecutors.

Afi Farma’s lawyer, Samsul Hidayat, informed the BBC that Indonesia’s drug regulatory authorities did not mandate thorough ingredient testing for drug manufacturers.

The judge presiding over the case at the Kediri District Court in East Java found the four defendants guilty of intentionally producing pharmaceutical products that failed to meet safety standards.

This case coincides with the global drive to enhance oversight of drug supply chains in the wake of these tragic poisonings.

Since 2022, more than 200 Indonesian children, predominantly under the age of five, have lost their lives due to acute kidney injury linked to contaminated cough syrup. Similar incidents, with about 100 deaths reported, have occurred in The Gambia and Uzbekistan.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued warnings regarding six cough syrups originating from India and Indonesia.

4 more 4 Nana has been a disaster – Nsein Chief

The Paramount Chief of Nsein Traditional Area in the Western Region, Awulae Agyefi Kwame, has noted that the Akufo-Addo-led administration has been the worst government he has encountered.

He specifically pointed out the deplorable state of roads in the region, emphasizing that President Akufo-Addo’s second term has been a disappointment to him and his people.

During a press conference at his palace on Tuesday, October 31, the chief highlighted the ongoing issues with the Takoradi to Agona-Nkwanta road, which has faced intermittent blockages due to its deteriorating condition.

He asserted that the region has not witnessed the promised benefits of the “4 more 4 Nana” slogan, as the current administration has allowed the roads in the region to deteriorate to an unprecedented extent.

“As for the Western region, our major problem is the poor nature of our roads, anybody who drives on the Agona Nkwanta road will notice how bad they are. I wonder if they are the same roads that Akufo-Addo plans to drive on to campaign.

“Under this NPP government, if we are being truthful, the roads in the Western region have all rotten. The government’s failure on the side of the Western Region simply put, the ‘Four more for Nana’ has been a disaster for the Western Region. When you look at the minerals from the Western region this should not be our reward.”

Awulae Agyefi Kwame urged the President and his appointees to prioritize the repair of the region’s roads before the 2024 election campaigns.

“The voice of the Western region has not been heard under this Nana Akufo-Addo and Bawumia government and we must speak up or else all our roads will completely deteriorate.”

  • Electorates affected by Akosombo Dam spillage can vote without voter ID in 2024 elections – EC

Electorates affected by Akosombo Dam spillage can vote without voter ID in 2024 elections – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced that individuals affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage will have the opportunity to cast their votes in the upcoming 2024 elections even if they have lost their voters’ ID cards due to the flood.

This decision aims to prevent the disenfranchisement of flood victims.

Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Electoral Commissioner, made this announcement, highlighting the EC’s commitment to ensuring that affected individuals can exercise their right to vote.

Speaking at a press conference to address electoral roll and matter arising on Wednesday, he said, “as for other particulars, I can’t speak to that. If it is the voter ID card that you have lost and your name is properly entered into the register, you can still vote without the voter ID card.”

He clarified that voters must make sure they are at the correct polling station to cast their votes without any complications.

“So whether you have the voter ID card or not, on the day of the election if you are able to know the polling station [that is all]. The difficulty is that if you go to the wrong polling station you are going to waste everybody’s time but if you go to the right polling station, your name will be on the register and you will be allowed to vote,” he added.

The dam spillage commenced on September 15, 2023, and by October 19, the rising water levels led to flooding in hundreds of homes in the Mepe and Battor regions of the North Tongu District in the Volta Region.

The floods have resulted in significant property damage, with numerous buildings and assets worth thousands of Ghana Cedis being affected.

Several organizations have stepped forward to offer assistance to alleviate the suffering of flood victims.

Victims of the Akosombo dam spillage

Notably, the Vodafone Ghana Foundation, in collaboration with its dedicated employees, conducted a visit to affected areas in Mepe within the Volta Region and Asuogyaman in the Eastern Region. They generously contributed relief items, including camp tents, treated mosquito nets, student mattresses, food supplies, and clean water.

Furthermore, the United States government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has provided a substantial amount of $100,000 (equivalent to GH¢1.1 million) to support over 31,000 people displaced by recent flooding.

Donations made to Akosombo dam spillage victims

This U.S. aid will facilitate the Ghanaian government’s relief initiatives, aimed at saving lives, alleviating suffering, and initiating the recovery process.

Meanwhile, the Volta River Authority (VRA) on October 30, 2023, ended the controlled spillage of the Akosombo dam.

  • There were no traces of fentanyl, meth in Matthew Perry’s system at time of death – Initial tests

There were no traces of fentanyl, meth in Matthew Perry’s system at time of death – Initial tests

Matthew Perry’s death was not caused by fentanyl or methamphetamine, according to preliminary tests conducted after the “Friends” star’s sudden passing over the weekend.

He died of an apparent drowning in a hot tub at his Pacific Palisades residence at the age of 54.

It is still uncertain whether Perry had lethal levels of prescription medications, as numerous prescription drugs were discovered at his residence, or if he had any illicit substances in his system.

A complete toxicology report is anticipated to take a minimum of six weeks, with a more probable range of 4 to 6 months, and an official cause of death has not yet been established.

The Los Angeles County medical examiner had classified his autopsy status as “deferred” on Sunday, with no indications of foul play.

Authorities discovered prescription anti-depressants, anti-anxiety medications, and medication for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at Perry’s home, which affects breathing. No illegal substances were found.

If the toxicology report eventually reveals narcotics, the Robbery Homicide Division of the Los Angeles Police Department will continue the investigation.

Perry, the author of “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” passed away alone at home after playing pickleball earlier on Saturday and sending his assistant on an errand. Law enforcement sources reported to TMZ that Perry’s body was not waterlogged when paramedics arrived at the scene, indicating that he had not been submerged for an extended period.

People close to the actor, who had been open about his struggles with substance abuse and alcoholism, mentioned that he had been sober in recent weeks and was feeling happier than ever.

Finance Ministry denies Smart Port and Electronic Cargo claim

The Ministry of Finance has refuted the existence of a new tax policy that necessitates shippers to acquire an Electronic Cargo Transit number.

Reports had emerged from a letter that falsely indicated that all shipments to Ghana, including transit shipments, must obtain an Electronic Cargo Transit number (ECTN/SPN) and submit it for verification to Antaser Afrique BVBA.

The Ministry of Finance in a statement dated October 31, denied the content of the letter and said, “The letter alleged that as from 15th September 2023, all shipment to Ghana, including transit shipment are required to obtain an Electronic Cargo Transit number (ECTN/SPN) and submit same to Antaser Afrique BVBA for verification.”

“The Ministry wishes to inform all shippers and stakeholders that the letter and its content are fake and should be ignored.”

The Ministry expressed gratitude to shipping agents and stakeholders who alerted them about the alleged letter, reaffirming their commitment to informing the public about any new tax policy that the government intends to implement.

“We thank all stakeholders who alerted us and made enquiries and wish to assure them that, as is done with all policies, extensive consultation will be done with relevant stakeholders whenever government wishes to introduce a new policy or tax.”

Sam George threatens to halt Akufo-Addo’s movement in Ningo-Prampram over damaged Afienya-Dawhenya bridge

Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam George, has issued a warning that he may impede President Akufo-Addo’s movement within his constituency unless the President takes action to repair the deteriorating Afienya-Dawhenya bridge.

Despite his ongoing efforts to secure funds for the bridge’s repair, Sam George expressed frustration over the lack of action.

During an interview on JoyNews’ AM show on Wednesday, he explained that, if necessary, his final course of action would involve collaborating with his constituents to restrict the President’s mobility.

“If he is saying and I agree with him and I have served notice on a bridge in Ningo-Prampram that if the President does not work on it and I see him crossing my constituency again, I will stop his convoy with my constituents,” he said in an interview on JoyNews.

Mr George on the back of that explained that for half of the year, all attempts to get the relevant authorities to address the bad nature of the bridge have proven futile hence his drastic decision.

“I have spent the last six months literarily begging in this country to fix the bridge. Kissing every backside I need to kiss. They are waiting for my constituents to die before they fix that bridge,” he lamented.

He emphasized his genuine concern, fearing that it might take a tragic incident resulting in loss of life for the government to take action. Sam George made a direct appeal to the Minister of Roads to promptly address the situation to prevent any such unfortunate occurrence.

Furthermore, Sam George responded to the aspiring contender’s accusation by highlighting that such suggestions implied a failure of the ruling government. He noted that the year 2022 had been declared as the “year of roads” by the President, making it evident that, despite this declaration, the living conditions of his constituents had not seen substantial improvement.

  • Another round of DDEP unlikely – Fitch

Another round of DDEP unlikely – Fitch

Fitch, the rating agency, has stated that it is unlikely that another round of local-currency debt exchange will occur in the near future.

In its most recent evaluation of Ghana, where it upgraded Ghana’s credit rating from “Restrictive Default” to ‘CCC,’ the UK-based rating agency explained that local-currency debt exchanges have led to a debt service reduction of ¢52 billion in 2023.

This amount is approximately 6% of the estimated 2023 Gross Domestic Product or 39% of the estimated 2023 revenue and grants.

The International Monetary Fund reported that in 2022, debt service represented 117% of revenue. Out of the total debt service reduction, Fitch estimated that the interest payment reduction in 2023 accounts for 1.8% of GDP or 12% of revenue and grants.

Fitch also mentioned that a further reduction in debt service arises from the domestic US dollar-denominated debt exchange, amounting to ¢5 billion (0.6% of GDP, 4% of revenue and grants) in 2023.

Additionally, there is a further reduction due to the 50% principal haircut agreed upon with the Bank of Ghana regarding its holdings of ¢71 billion local-currency nonmarketable debt.

These debt exchanges, it stressed, have brought down interest payments to a still high 38% of revenue and grants in 2023, from 47% in 2022 (commitment basis, including interest payments that are due in 2023 on external debt), adding, “Fitch considers another round of local-currency debt exchange as unlikely in the near term”.

Fitch has additionally designated ‘CCC’ issue ratings to two interest-only bonds that were issued to pension funds and four domestic US dollar-denominated bonds, all as part of the domestic debt exchange initiatives.

Fitch has reaffirmed the ‘CCC’ issue rating on the local-currency bonds assigned on March 22, 2023.

It’s worth noting that in August, Ghana successfully made the initial coupon payments on these “new” bonds in a punctual manner.

State prosecutors at the High Court have filed fresh charges against Patience Botwe, the former housemaid of former Minister for Sanitation, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, and seven other individuals.

They are accused of stealing various sums of money, including $1 million, 300,000 euros, and other properties from the former minister’s home.

During a recent hearing, DSP Emmanuel Nyamekye, a police prosecutor, informed the court that a new charge sheet had been submitted to the High Court.

He stated that once a hearing date is assigned, they will withdraw the case from the Circuit Court and continue with proceedings at the High Court.

The case has been adjourned to November 8, 2023, to allow the Prosecution to withdraw the case from the Circuit Court. All accused persons were present in court, with the exception of the eighth accused, who remains at large.

Patience Botwe and the other seven individuals are facing provisional charges of conspiracy, dishonestly receiving, and related offenses.
