No deadline has been set by the IMF for second tranche disbursement – Finance Ministry

The Ministry of Finance has refuted reports that Ghana missed its November 1 deadline for the disbursement of the second tranche of International Monetary Fund (IMF) funds.

“The attention of the Ministry of Finance has been drawn to above- titled misleading publication on Myjoyonline, about Ghana missing a purported deadline of 1st November, 2023, for the disbursement of the second tranche of International Monetary (IMF) Funds,” a rejoinder by the ministry read.

According to the Finance Ministry, there is no 1st November, 2023 timeline for disbursement of the second tranche of the IMF funds as “no deadline has been set by the IMF for the second tranche disbursement,” which is due to take place after the IMF Executive Board approves the first review.

The Ministry made mention of Table 9 on page 72 of the Memorandum of Economic and Financial Policies (MEFP) published on 17th May, 2023 by the IMF referenced by MyJoyOnline.

“The November 1 stated in this table is an indicative timeline for completion of the first review, based on the observance of the end-June 2023 performance criteria,” the statement added.

The first review was successfully completed on 6th October, 2023, culminating in a Staff Level Agreement (SLA) on the same day.

“Whilst the SLA milestone is an important step towards unlocking the second tranche of $600 million under the programme, the timeline set by the Executive Board for the consideration and approval of the first review, is not 1st November, 2023 as published by Myjoyonline. The exact timeline for the Board date is determined by the IMF Executive Board,” the Ministry reiterated.

Following the clarification, the Ministry of Finance has encouraged the general public and media houses in particular, to seek the facts and truth about any information that comes to their attention, by reaching out to the Ministry for clarification whenever they are in doubt.

Meanwhile, the Ministry says Government of Ghana is making good progress in accordance with its strategic plan to engage the Official Creditor Committee (OCC) of the Paris Club; secure a Memorandum of Understanding on debt restructuring; and go before the IMF Executive Board for approval of the first review.

Students who failed their exams were repeated, not sacked – Dormaa Presby Nursing School

Principal of Dormaa Presbyterian Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Dr. Charles Agyeman-Prempeh, has advised the public to dismiss reports of 80 students being dismissed due to academic failure.

Reports claimed that over 80 students were expelled from the Presbyterian Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Dormaa, Ahenkroh, for failing to meet academic standards. However, Dr. Charles Agyeman-Prempeh clarified that no such decision had been made at his institution.

He explained that the students in question were actually asked to repeat due to not meeting the cumulative requirement of 1.0 grade points and could not progress until this academic standard was achieved.

“The school has rules, and before you come to the school, you are told that before you progress further, you need a cumulative grade point, and in the university, it is 1.0, and if you get below that, it means you can’t progress until you meet that requirement.”

“That is what we have done. We have repeated students who couldn’t meet the requirement, but the school hasn’t sacked anyone for meeting the requirements, so that report should be disregarded,” he said on Rainbow Radio Accra.

Bawumia, Kennedy ‘make up’ after NPP primaries; stand united for 2024 elections

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia held a meeting with his primary rival Kennedy Agyapong at the latter’s residence in Accra, following the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race on November 4, 2023,

This visit, as reported in the November 10, 2023 edition of the pro-government Daily Guide newspaper, occurred on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.

Describing it as a “calculated political move,” the newspaper said the meeting held over dinner “was aimed at renewing the bonds of friendship between the two influential figures as well as foster collaboration for the betterment of the nation as next year’s election beckons.”

Neither the camp of the Vice President nor that of the Assin Central MP has released any images or details of the mentioned meeting. The Assin Central MP, who emerged as a significant power broker in the NPP due to his surprising performance in the NPP presidential flagbearer race, was involved in this undisclosed meeting.

According to the report, “Dr. Bawumia is expected to visit other aspirants and opinion leaders in the NPP as he tries to mend fences and build bridges ahead of the 2024 elections.

Dr Bawumia reportedly praised Ken for his substantial contributions to the party across all levels, emphasizing the need for a united effort, prioritizing national interests over personal ones.

“They agreed to set aside any differences and work hand in hand to ensure the prosperity and development of Ghana,” the report added.

The most recent public sighting of the two was on November 4 during the official announcement of Bawumia as the race winner, an event where Ken was reportedly “compelled” to attend.

During the November 4 vote, Dr. Bawumia secured 61.47% of the total votes from nearly 200,000 NPP delegates, emerging as the victor, while Ken Agyapong secured about 37.41%.

At an event declaring the vice president the winner on Saturday night, Ken Agyapong pledged support for Dr. Bawumia’s presidential campaign.

“This is the only thing I’ve been preaching, and I must admit this election is fair and my grassroots have spoken; therefore, I accept the results in good faith,” Mr Agyapong said moments after the results was announced.

He vowed his allegiance to the flagbearer-elect to aid in defeating the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and to secure a victory beyond the current eight-year tenure.

“So, party members we should put everything behind us and let’s unite this party…, I believe we can break the eight and that’s what I’ve been preaching,” he added.

Breaking the 8 assured if Bawumia picks me as his running mate – Nana Akomea

Former Member of Parliament for Okaikwei South, Nana Akomea, has stated that if the newly elected New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, chooses him as his running mate for the 2024 general elections, victory is assured.

Nana Akomea, who previously served as the campaign spokesperson for Dr. Bawumia during the flagbearer contest, believes he possesses the qualifications and skills required for the role.

He made his views known during an interview on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana.

He stated, “If he chooses me, victory is assured. But it would be unfortunate if the selection of a running mate degenerates into chaos.”

Amid concerns about potential discord over the selection process, Nana Akomea urged aspirants for the running mate position to maintain conduct that preserves harmony within the party. The Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC) emphasized the importance of allowing Vice President Bawumia the necessary time and space to recuperate from the contest and make a well-considered decision in consultation with the party.

Within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), tensions are escalating as Members of Parliament vie for the position of running mate to Dr. Bawumia, subsequent to his recent victory in the flagbearership election.

During the first day of parliamentary sessions following the flagbearership announcement on Tuesday, November 7, intense discussions and coalitions emerged among MPs from the ruling party regarding potential choices for the running mate position.

Several names have been circulating, including Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Minister for Energy; Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu; First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei Owusu; and Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

Akufo-Addo appoints 3 Court of Appeal Justices to the Supreme Court

President Akufo-Addo has nominated three Court of Appeal Justices to fill the vacancies on the Supreme Court bench left by three Justices who retired earlier this year.

The appointed Justices—Henry Anthony Cofie, Yaw Asare Darko, and Richard Agyei Frimpong—will step in following the retirements of Justice Nene Abayeteye Ofoe Amegatcher in February 2023, former Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah in May 2023, and Justice Jones Dotse in June 2023.

The President’s decision has been forwarded to the Parliament’s Appointments Committee for consideration and report, as announced by the First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu.

“Over the last few months, in February, May and June respectively, three vacancies have been created on the Supreme Court bench which now by convention having regard to its excessive jurisdiction comprises the Chief Justice and 15 other court justices.

These vacancies have occurred as a result of the mandatory retirement of Justice Nene Abayeteye Ofoe Amegatcher, on 3rd February 2023, former Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah on 24th May 2023, and Justice Jones Dotse on 8th June 2023. There are now 13 justices of the Supreme Court including the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo,” an excerpt of the President’s letter to Parliament read.

The Supreme Court bench is currently composed of the Chief Justice and 13 additional Justices.

We don’t have enough gas – Energy Ministry hints on more power outages

Minister for Energy, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has expressed concerns regarding a potential impact on electricity supply due to an impending shortage of gas for power generation.

He attributed this issue to an over-reliance on gas plants, a departure from the historical reliance on liquid fuels for energy production.

Dr. Prempeh elaborated that the nation is currently facing a dual challenge. The shift towards a predominantly gas-based energy system has rendered the power infrastructure susceptible, such that any disruption in gas supply could trigger the shutdown of all power generation systems, resulting in a nationwide blackout.

“So that is why if people see lights out when they go out now, it is more extensive than previously because previously the liquid fuels were in the various thermal plants scattered around,” he noted.

The Energy Minister stressed the significant challenge posed by the present scenario, wherein all power systems are interconnected through a sole gas pipeline. This is a departure from the past, where multiple dispersed thermal plants were fueled by various liquid fuels.

“So it goes through the tubes that goes around. So when you have a major cut at one end, the devastation is horrendous and we don’t have enough gas for our generation as we speak, we don’t have enough gas,” he stressed.

He noted that this issue is exacerbated by the country’s limited gas reserves, compounded by its dependency on the West African Gas Pipeline. Any delays or failures in payment to the pipeline, he explained, restrict the nation’s access to gas, exacerbating the existing power challenges.

“So as we speak, this is a major challenge for us that from the West we have gas that we cannot put in because West African Gas Pipeline Company is not allowing us, it’s restricting us and that’s why sometimes we find that there are challenges with power networks,” Dr Prempeh stressed.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh however highlighted the government’s endeavors in handling the nation’s power situation through power agreements.

Government has signed two Power Purchasing Agreements (PPA) to bolster the country’s power generation capacity by approximately 720 Mega Watts (MW).

The agreements involve 370MW AKSA in Tema and 350MW AKSA in Kumasi, operating under the new PPA policy, which replaces the previous “Take or Pay” arrangement. This initiative not only ensures a prudent increase in power generation but also aims to enhance efficiency in both generation and distribution across the country.

Despite the obstacles, he urged Ghanaians to adopt energy-efficient devices to conserve power, recognizing the hardships experienced during previous years of insufficient electricity supply.

  • I have not left NPP – Hopeson Adorye

Former Security Coordinator at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), Hopeson Adorye, has revealed that he has divided his support between Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mr Adorye, previously a staunch advocate for the former Minister of Trade and Industry, acknowledges his past allegiance but now holds loyalty to both entities.

“I am going to vote for Alan Kyerematen on December 7, 2024, and then parliamentary I will give it to my party NPP. If they don’t want it, I can take the two [vote],” he told JoyNews.

He made the statement after gracing the Greater Accra Volunteer Activation event organised by Movement for Change on Wednesday.

Even though he openly backed the independent presidential candidacy of the former NPP member, Mr. Adorye maintains his unwavering allegiance to the NPP.

“I am a party member, even this week, I have paid my dues. If they want to say we don’t need you, they will just calculate my dues and give it to me,” he said.

Mr. Kyeremanten declared his departure from the NPP on September 25, establishing the Movement for Change. Within this movement, he introduced the Great Transformational Plan (GTP), expressing confidence that it will effectively combat poverty and foster prosperity within the nation.

Toflokpo sees massive security presence after clash between Electrochem and residents

Armed military and police personnel have been dispatched to Toflokpo in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region following a clash between residents and Electrochem Ghana, a salt mining company, which resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries on Monday.

Although the community has regained its composure, residents are still dealing with the aftermath of the incident. They remain determined to resist any efforts to take over their portion of the Ada Songor concession, which is crucial for their livelihoods.

Residents emphasize that both the government and Electrochem Ghana should adhere to a master plan that designates 12 acres of the concession to Electrochem.

Chief of Toflokpo, Nene Mayilo Dadebom II, in an interview on CitiNews, alleged that the salt firm had employed a landguard named Alhassan to terrorize the residents of Toflokpo.

However, Electrochem Ghana has denied these allegations, and according to the company’s operations manager, Nene Odeopeor Siada III, it does not employ land guards.

He further noted that the police were present on the day of the clash to protect its equipment and personnel.

Siada III further explained that the company was rebuilding a dyke on its concession after it was damaged by the rain. However, a large crowd from Toflokpo arrived and began throwing stones at the company’s workers. He denied that the police opened fire on the crowd, saying that the company was simply trying to protect its concession.

The purpose of this visit was to offer warm congratulations to Dr. Bawumia for his resounding victory as the chosen flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party.

A total of 203,439 delegates participated in the election conducted on November 4 in the various constituencies across all 16 regions of Ghana.

The Vice President and current leader of the NPP seized the opportunity to reaffirm his commitment to fostering unity within the party.

With unwavering dedication to the NPP’s ultimate success, Dr. Bawumia pledged to lead the party as a united and cohesive force. He expressed his determination to secure victory for the NPP in the upcoming general elections, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and collaboration.

  • Breaking the 8 not likely and NDC is no credible alternative – Alan Kyerematen

Breaking the 8 not likely and NDC is no credible alternative – Alan Kyerematen

The Founder of the Movement for Change and an independent presidential candidate for the 2024 general election, Alan Kyerematen, has underlined his confidence in his vision for the nation, suggesting that neither NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama nor Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia can match it in the upcoming 2024 elections.

While extending his congratulations to Vice President Bawumia on being selected as the NPP’s flagbearer, Kyerematen expressed the view that this outcome was largely anticipated.

He noted that the electoral process appeared to have been strategically and tactically tilted in favor of a specific candidate, as evidenced by the results of the primaries.

“Whilst using this opportunity to congratulate His Excellency the Vice President on taking over the mantle of leadership in the NPP, his selection as flagbearer is not a surprise to any serious political watcher. It was the widely anticipated outcome of the elections. I had been saying all along that the electoral process had been strategically and tactically skewed in favour of a particular candidate. That is what we saw on Saturday,” Mr Kyerematen said in an interview with the Daily Ghanaian Guide.

Additionally, Mr. Kyerematen raised inquiries regarding the margin of victory, suggesting that the Vice President’s 60% vote share, while significant, could be indicative of not having complete control over the ruling NPP.

“Judging from the widely publicized expected margin of not less than 80% in favour of the Vice President, I am inclined to think that the 60% vote for him provides a clear indication that the Vice President does not have total control of his own Party. The election results must also be analysed against the background that the Vice President has been campaigning for the Flagbearership since 2020 and has been the beneficiary of both State and Party sponsored support.”

Regarding the commonly heard slogan “Break the Eight” within the NPP, Mr Kyerematen conveyed his opinion that this narrative does not resonate with the everyday concerns of the majority of Ghanaians, who are dealing with economic difficulties and unemployment. He also stated that the NDC does not offer a credible alternative.

As a result, he called for the emergence of a “Third Force” in Ghana’s politics and emphasized that the recently formed Movement for Change, under his leadership, represents a beacon of hope for the nation.

“Well, the emerging chorus and narrative from the Party for ‘Unity’ to Break the Eight, has very little relevance to the loud public demand for change in the political leadership of our country, to respond to the critical challenges of our time. The call to Break the Eight does not reflect the everyday concerns of the majority of Ghanaians, about the ailing economy and the lack of jobs for the teeming youth of Ghana.

“So for me, the chances of NPP Breaking the Eight is very slim. In the same vein, however, the NDC does not provide a credible alternative. It is against this background, that the ever-increasing appetite of Ghanaians for a ‘Third Force’, must be considered as the only hope for Ghana to rise again. This is where the newly established Movement for Change under my leadership, becomes the saving grace for Ghana.”

Coward! You should have left NPP like Alan to transform Ghana – Odike tells Ken Agyapong

The founder of the now-defunct United Progressive Party (UPP), Mr. Akwasi Addai Odike, has expressed deep disappointment in response to Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong’s decision to support the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This decision comes after Kennedy Agyapong lost the party’s presidential primaries to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

On November 4, the results of the primaries were as follows: Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia polled 118,210 votes (61.43 percent), Kennedy Agyapong received 71,991 votes (37.41 percent), former Agric Minister Dr. Afriyie Akoto secured 1,459 votes (0.76 percent), and former Mampong MP Frimpong Addai-Nimoh obtained 781 votes (0.41 percent).

Following the announcement of the results, Mr. Agyapong declared his commitment to the NPP, with the goal of ensuring the party’s success in breaking the eight-year cycle.

“I believe the party has been fair and transparent, and the only thing I have always been preaching is that this election is fair and my grassroots people have spoken. I pledge my support that we are going to work tirelessly to break the eight.”

“So, party members that we are here, we should put everything behind us and let us move this party forward. With unity, I believe we can break the eight,” he told the gathering to loud cheers.

A peeved Odike in an interview on Angel FM noted that he, together with the Ghanaian youth, are disappointed in Mr Agyapong over his inability to take risks to ensure his vision comes to fruition.

He noted that Mr Agyapong, who on a number of occasions accused the government of being corrupt, should have followed Mr Alan Kyerematen’s footsteps and exited the NPP to make his vision a reality.

Kennedy Agyapong, now your showdown comment has been slowed down. From showdown to slowdown Ken, you have raised the hopes of many. They think that you have an extraordinary vision. So I looked at his campaign. It looked like he was gearing towards the general election, and people had their hope in you. Now you have quelled back into your shells that you support Bawumia,” he said in an interview on Angel FM.

“Kennedy you have disappointed Ghanaians, and if some of us are still alive, you can’t make political comments and get away with it. Alan has shown he is more of a man than him because he has shown he wants to implement his vision to transform this country.”

Mr Kyerematen left the NPP in September this year over several challenges with the party’s electoral process among others in order to run for the 2024 presidential election as an independent candidate.

According to him, the Assin Central MP has sided with a faction that is not keen on prioritising the needs of citizens against theirs.

“Those who had hope in you after you said Ghana first and not because of a political party, what should those people do? Are you going to tell them to support Bawumia? Someone you campaigned against Ken, if you say you love the NPP more than Ghana, then you have exposed yourself. Many times, your comments suggest Ghana first. So where you are now, because where you are, it is not Ghana first,” he said.

He added: If he doesn’t change his mind and come to join us to save this country, Ken Agyapong’s political career has come to an end.”

Mr Odike noted that the action taken by Mr Agyapong hurt him to the extent that he shed tears.

“I cried at home yesterday (Sunday). When you say you have a vision, it doesn’t matter the risks you have to take to ensure the vision is materialised. You can’t take risks and you have given so much hope to the Ghanaian youth,” he said.

We will release Luis Diaz’s father as soon as we have security guarantees – Rebel group

Rebel group, the National Liberation Army of Colombia, has blamed the Colombian government for the delay in releasing Luis Diaz’s father, who was kidnapped over a week ago.

This comes after the National Liberation Army of Colombia pledged to expedite the return of Diaz Sr.

A statement, signed by unit leader Commander Jose Manuel Martinez Quiroz, noted that the group is not able to release its hostage due to the active operations of the Colombian army that threaten their security.

“On November 2, we informed the country of the decision to release Mr Luis Manuel Diaz, father of the player Luis Diaz.

“From that date, we began the process to accomplish this as soon as possible. We are making efforts to avoid incidents with government forces.

“The area is still militarised, they are carrying out flyovers, disembarking troops, broadcasting and offering rewards as part of an intense search operation.

“This situation is not allowing for the execution of the release plan quickly and safely, where Mr Luis Manuel Diaz is not at risk.”

The statement added that “if operations continue in the area, they will delay the release and increase the risks.

The group noted that it shares the anguish of the affected family, “to whom we say that we will keep our word to release him unilaterally, as soon as we have security guarantees for the development of the liberation operation.”

Diaz made a significant impact for Liverpool when he entered the game as a substitute, scoring a late equalizing goal against Luton on Sunday. After his goal, he raised his shirt to reveal a heartfelt message that read “Libertad para Papa” (Freedom for dad).

The winger, who had been absent from the team since the kidnappings, subsequently took to Instagram to share an emotional message, urging for the release of his father.

Police have arrested an opposition presidential candidate during a protest in Madagascar’s capital, Antananarivo.

Jean Jacques Ratsietison was seen being detained by law enforcement officers.

The opposition claims that the upcoming election this month is being manipulated to favor the incumbent, Andry Rajoelina. However, the electoral commission has yet to respond to these allegations.

In recent times, several efforts to organize protests have been disrupted by the police.

Political tensions in Madagascar have escalated, with incidents last month resulting in injuries to two candidates, including former President Marc Ravalomanana, during opposition demonstrations.

Jackson treble enables Blues to beat nine-man Spurs

Chelsea, led by manager Mauricio Pochettino, triumphed with a 4-1 victory over Tottenham, ending Spurs’ unbeaten start to the Premier League season in a thrilling match featuring two red cards and five disallowed goals.

The action began with Dejan Kulusevski scoring for Ange Postecoglou’s team within the first 57 minutes. Cristian Romero received a straight red card, leading to a penalty converted by Cole Palmer.

The first half was intense, marked by three disallowed goals and the departure of Micky van de Ven and James Maddison due to injuries.

Soon after half-time, Destiny Udogie was sent off, reducing Spurs to nine players. Chelsea’s numerical advantage eventually paid off, with Nicolas Jackson scoring in the 75th minute and completing a hat-trick with two stoppage-time goals, concluding a highly eventful London derby.

While the pre-match focus was on the reception for Mauricio Pochettino, he received a warm welcome from his counterpart, Ange Postecoglou.

This match, known for its drama, set the tone with a strong tackle by Moises Caicedo on Maddison within the first three minutes.

The rivalry between the clubs, especially during Pochettino’s Tottenham tenure, has been intense, notably after the ‘Battle of the Bridge’ in 2016.

Pochettino’s return to N17, nearly four years after his sacking, saw Tottenham take an early lead with Kulusevski’s goal, but the match remained action-packed with disallowed goals, VAR checks, and numerous incidents.

In the end, Chelsea emerged victorious, securing Pochettino’s first statement result of his reign.

  • Airbnb to pay $835m to Italy govt in tax invasion inquiry

Airbnb to pay $835m to Italy govt in tax invasion inquiry

An Italian judge has ruled for the seizure of €779.5 million ($835.5 million; £676.8 million) from Airbnb, a major player in short-term rentals, on the grounds of alleged tax evasion.

Prosecutors have asserted that the company did not collect a tax on approximately €3.7 billion in rental income, which landlords in Italy are obligated to pay at a rate of 21%.

Airbnb told the BBC that it was “surprised and disappointed at the action announced by the Italian public prosecutor”.

Christopher Nutly, a spokesperson for Airbnb, stated that the company’s European headquarters had been engaged in discussions with the Italian tax agency to address the issue since June.

Mr Nutly added “We are confident that we have acted in full compliance with the law and intend to exercise our rights with respect to this issue.”

According to a statement from Milan Tribunal prosecutors, three individuals who held managerial positions at Airbnb between 2017 and 2021 are currently under investigation.

In 2022, Airbnb challenged an Italian law that mandated short-term rental providers, including the company, to withhold 21% of rental income from landlords and remit it to tax authorities.

Airbnb argued that Italy’s taxation requirements were in conflict with the European Union’s principle of allowing the free provision of services across the 27-country bloc. However, the European Union’s highest court ultimately ruled in favor of Italy’s requirements.

In recent years, Italian authorities have intensified their scrutiny of the tax practices of major companies like Airbnb, which has been operating in the country since 2008. Reports suggest that Italian prosecutors have initiated tax-related investigations into Netflix and Meta.

Just last month, Italian politicians announced plans to crack down on landlords who do not pay taxes on short-term rentals facilitated by platforms such as Airbnb. The co-ruling Forza Italia party revealed intentions to introduce a national identification code for short-term rentals in the country.

“That code will bring out the revenue of those who rent flats without declaring them,” Forza Italia leader and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani told reporters.

Politicians estimate that the move could boost Italy’s fiscal revenue by €1bn.

  • VAR is diminishing the authority of referees – Postecoglou

VAR is diminishing the authority of referees – Postecoglou

Ange Postecoglou believes that VAR has eroded the authority of referees following his observation of Tottenham, reduced to nine men, losing 4-1 to Chelsea.

In a frenetic encounter, five goals were disallowed, two red cards were shown, a penalty was awarded, and two Tottenham players were compelled to leave the field due to injuries. Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino marked his return to North London by ending the Premier League’s last remaining unbeaten record.

However, VAR took center stage in the match, as two of the nine decisions were referred for review, shaping the course of the game.

Postecoglou, 58, said: “It’s hard to analyse from a football perspective. We’re left with a result which is disappointing but I’m proud of the players’ efforts and will and desire to get something from the game.

“[Lengthy VAR pauses] are going to become the norm, I think it’s where the game is heading.

“I don’t like it. I don’t like the standing around, the whole theatre around waiting for decisions. But I know I’m in the wilderness on that.

“In my 26 years, I was always prepared to accept the referee’s decision, good, bad or otherwise, and I’ve had some shockers in my career.

“I’ve had some go my way as well. I’ll cop that because I just want the game to be played. But when we’re complaining about decisions every week, this is what’s going to happen.

“People are going to forensically scrutinise everything to make sure they’re comfortable it’s right. And even at the end of that, we’re still not happy.

“It’s just diminishing the authority of the referee. You can’t tell me referees are in control of games. They’re not.”

Even with just nine players on the field, Spurs displayed remarkable resilience and continued to press Chelsea. The match remained highly competitive until Nicolas Jackson, in stoppage time, twice exploited their high defensive line to secure an unexpected hat-trick.

Ange Postecoglou’s team had been in control of the game before Cristian Romero’s red card in the 33rd minute, as he was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Enzo Fernandez, and subsequently, Chelsea equalized through a penalty converted by Cole Palmer after Dejan Kulusevski’s deflected goal.

In the second half, Destiny Udogie received a second yellow card for a foul on Raheem Sterling, leaving Spurs with just eight players. However, it took an additional 20 minutes before Chelsea finally managed to take the lead through Jackson’s goal.

To compound Tottenham’s difficulties, they also had to cope with the injuries of James Maddison and Micky van de Ven during the match.

  • Speaker Bagbin calls for a new world order to reclaim citizens’ loss of trust

Speaker Bagbin calls for a new world order to reclaim citizens’ loss of trust

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called for a new world order that will manage conflicts better, deliver justice, reclaim the loss of trust by the people in the leadership of all sectors of the society, provide hope and optimism for the people, and promote peace, love and happiness.

He also proposed a reform of the United Nations Charter, given its inadequacy in the face of current global realities, to make it more responsive, democratic, inclusive, and aligned to modern-day governance requirements and structure.

It must create an equitable, just and sustainable future for all, prescribe behaviour and enact enforceable laws to regulate the conduct of nations in areas where the global community is most challenged.

Mr Bagbin was speaking at the 24th International Conference of Chief Justices from across the world, organised by the City Montessori School in Lucknow, India.

It was under the theme “Uniting the world for children through enforceable world law and effective global governance.” Sixty-three countries participated in the conference.

To achieve the world order he envisioned, the Speaker recommended a new global governance structure of four equal arms – the executive, legislature, judiciary and civil society (including the media).

He argued that “the tripod of three arms of government – executive, legislature and judiciary – is not working well. The checks are jerks and the balance are imbalances”.

He described CSOs as the backbone of positive change that can contribute to transformative reforms and hold governments and international bodies accountable for their actions.

Pressing home his point, he said “Let’s face it, legislatures all over the world have not been able to throw light on the operations of the executive nor hold it accountable to the people; neither have legislatures succeeded in self-regulation nor post legislation scrutiny.

“The proposed four world governance institutions must be truly equal, and work on the principles of checks and balances, openness, transparency and accountability”.

Rt. Hon. Bagbin told the participants that as leaders, they had a responsibility to ensure that they bequeath to the next generation a world that is inhabitable, that meets the aspirations of the youth, and that secures the integrity and dignity of the human race.

He touched on today’s global challenges requiring concerted, urgent attention and mentioned the depletion of the ozone layer, global water scarcity, hunger, poor sanitation, the loss of biodiversity and the extinction of certain species due to the exponential growth in population.

He also mentioned conflicts in the Korean Peninsula, Russia-Ukraine, the Sahel, Israel-Hamas, and issues around Artificial Intelligence (AI), and its potential existential threat to humanity.

In all these, he said, the global community must prioritise laws and governance interventions that safeguard the future of children and develop mechanisms to hold governments accountable for their acts that violate children’s rights such as child labour, child marriages, trafficking, and exploitation.

He encouraged governments to protect children’s rights and guarantee their survival and development, by upholding their legal obligations under the UN Conventions on the Rights of the Child.

“They must ensure all children are allowed to be children, to grow, learn, and play in a safe, inclusive and caring environment, and in dignity”.

He advised the youth who were part of the conference to remain optimistic and focus on developing an international community that cares for all.

He told them “you have innovation and energy to build a better society. You are the best placed to lead this transformation.

“You must compel governments to consider more resilient safety nets for the vulnerable, and demand participation in government”.

Doctors cut off Mr Ibu’s leg to save his life

Nigerian actor John Okafor, widely known as Mr. Ibu, has undergone a leg amputation as part of his ongoing fight against an undisclosed illness.

According to a statement shared by his family on his Instagram page on November 6, 2023, this drastic measure was taken to preserve his life. The family continues to seek financial assistance from the public to support Mr. Ibu’s care and well-being while hoping for the best.

“Good afternoon, Nigerians. We want to appreciate everyone who has come through for our dad.

“Saying we are grateful is an understatement, and only the good Lord can thank you all enough for every help you’ve rendered.

“As of 1 p.m., today, Daddy has gone through seven successful surgeries. But to keep him alive and increase his chances of recovery, one of his legs had to be amputated.

“This development has been hard on us all, but we’ve had to accept it as Daddy’s new reality to keep him alive.

“Please, we are still soliciting support from well-meaning Nigerians as, at this stage, Daddy is still very delicate, and he needs all the help he can get.

“Thank you, everyone. The Okafor family is grateful and we don’t take you for granted. In due time, Daddy will personally acknowledge everyone who supported him during this period as soon as he’s stable.”

In October last year, Mr. Ibu personally reached out to the public, seeking financial assistance to cover the expenses related to his undisclosed illness, which had confined him to his bed for several weeks.

During this time, he revealed that his medical team had recommended amputation as a last resort if all other treatments failed to alleviate his condition.

“While I am hoping for prayers and assistance, as I speak to you, I am still lying down in the hospital. The medical director of this hospital said that in case his new idea does not work, the next idea is to cut off my leg. Just see me, if they cut off my leg where would I go? Pray for me, I don’t want my leg to be cut off, thank you so much, God, bless you,” Mr Ibu said in a video that soon went viral.

He added, “Dear Good people of Nigeria, we are counting on your support at this point, we need it the most.”

  • Ken Agyapong is only fighting for his business not the ordinary Ghanaian – Namoale

Ken Agyapong is only fighting for his business not the ordinary Ghanaian – Namoale

Former Member of Parliament for Dadekotopon, Nii Amasah Namoale, has accused Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, of putting his needs above those of Ghanaians in his quest to become the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer.

In an interview on Angel FM, Mr Namoale said the only reason Mr Agyapong contested was to secure the contracts he earns from the government and prevent anyone from hindering the growth of his businesses.

He said: “When they were voting, I nearly wrote on my Facebook wall that nobody should expect Kennedy Agyapong to lead the party. Ken Agyapong will never lead the party because he knew it is only in the NPP that he can get contracts.

“Ken Agyapong is not coming to fight for the ordinary Ghanaian, he is fighting for his business. He is going to fight for his business.”

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was declared the winner of the New Patriotic Party’s presidential election to represent the ruling party in the 2024 general elections.

A total of 203,439 delegates participated in the election conducted on November 4, in the various constituencies across all 16 regions of Ghana.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia polled 118,210 votes, representing 61.43 percent, Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong garnered 71,991 votes (37.41 percent), former Agric Minister, Dr Afriyie Akoto got 1,459 votes (0.76 percent) and former Mampong MP, Frimpong Addai-Nimoh secured 781 votes, representing (0.41 percent).

Following the election, Mr Namoale believes that all Mr Agyapong will “do now is to fight for running mate.”

Vocal critic Kevin Taylor has also levelled serious allegations against Kennedy Agyapong prior to the elections.

According to Taylor, Kennedy Agyapong has benefited immensely from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration. Taylor states, “He is the one who has gotten more money under this administration than anyone else. When you go to COCOBOD, 70% of the contracts, they give it to Kennedy Agyapong.”

A member of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Frederick Opare-Ansah, has also noted that information from Oppong Bio, a member of Ken Agyapong’s campaign, suggests that Mr Agaypong was only interested in running for president due to selfish reasons.

In an interview on Citi TV’s Face to Face show, Frederick Opare-Ansah said this to buttress his $500 million worth of contract claims against Mr Agyapong.

“It was in September 2022, in his house on the Agbobga road. I want to protect the identity of one person because he is a businessman. He would not want his name out there. We were four there. The other guy is one Sam, who is also part of the campaign of Kennedy. He (Oppong Bio) said this and laughed that if they were to make that offer to Kennedy today, he would find some good reason to tell the campaign team and then stop,” he said.

  • Ken Agyapong is a coward and self-centered – Namoale

Ken Agyapong is a coward and self-centered – Namoale

Former Member of Parliament for Dadekotopon, Nii Amasah Namoale, has accused former presidential aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, of being a weakling.

According to him, if Mr Agyapong was true to his words that Ghanaians have not been better off under the Akufo-Addo-led government, he would have joined the many protestors demanding accountability and better economic conditions.

On October 2, 2023, Ken Agyapong was reported to have accused the NPP of corruption and looting public funds. He indicated that the extent of this alleged looting was deeply concerning and claimed that these stolen funds were being stashed abroad.

However, Agyapong later clarified that his comments were taken out of context. He explained that the video containing his remarks had been edited to create a misleading impression.

But Mr Agyapong has failed to do so, and for this, he has been termed a coward by Mr Namoale during an interview on Angel FM.

“I know Kennedy to be a coward. He shows a brave face, but he is a coward. If you say Ghana first, I’m expecting to see Ken Agyapong marshal people but he is a coward and he is self-centered.”

He also accused Kennedy Agyapong of putting his needs above those of Ghanaians in his quest to become the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer.

Mr Namoale is not the only individual who shares this assertion.

Media personality Kevin Taylor believes the same and further asks why Mr Agyapong is still a member of the Board of Ghana Gas despite his corruption claims against his government.

“If Kennedy tells you NPP members are thieves, who are the thieves? He is a first class criminal, because as we speak today, he is still serving a criminal. Kennedy Agyapong is serving Bawumia, he is serving Akufo-Addo, he is serving NPP as the board chair of Ghana Gas,” he said.

Also, a member of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Frederick Opare-Ansah, has accused former presidential aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, of being a coward.

Frederick Opare-Ansah noted that, just like a barking dog never bites, Mr Agyapong has never been able to come face-to-face with individuals he has threatened or accused.

  • 5-star hotel in California sued for serving woman with bottled water containing a man’s seed

5-star hotel in California sued for serving woman with bottled water containing a man’s seed

A woman has filed a lawsuit against a prestigious 5-star hotel after a laboratory analysis confirmed that the bottled water she purchased at the establishment was tainted with human semen.

The woman, identified as Jane Doe, is an American citizen who, along with her husband, John Doe, stayed at the upscale Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Half Moon Bay, California, for a four-night visit in November.

During their stay, an incident occurred where a hotel staff member provided Jane Doe with water that was later discovered to be contaminated.

While at the hotel, Jane Doe had requested water, and a member of the hotel staff delivered several bottles. She placed one of these bottles on the nightstand beside her bed and went to sleep.

Later in the night, she woke up feeling thirsty and decided to drink some water from the bottle. It was at this point that she noticed an unusual taste, leading to her realization that the water was not as it should have been.

“She opened it, took a drink, and knew immediately that something was wrong with the liquid she had just swallowed. Jane Doe was mortified, terrified, embarrassed, and humiliated, but shared her suspicion with her husband, who then asked the hotel security and management representatives to call the police,” Jane Doe’s lawyers are quoted to have said in a lawsuit.

Upon the arrival of the police, Jane and John expressed their suspicion that the water they had been served was potentially tainted with semen. Their serious accusation prompted the law enforcement officers to collect a sample for laboratory analysis.

To the astonishment of all parties involved, the laboratory test unequivocally validated the couple’s claim, confirming that the water they had consumed was indeed contaminated with human semen.

“The Ritz-Carlton subsequently sent the water bottle to a laboratory for analysis, and the testing confirmed that the water contained semen,” court documents are quoted to have revealed.

Interestingly, reports say Ritz-Carlton has refused to “disclose the identities of the hotel employees on duty that day so that their backgrounds and criminal histories can be scrutinized.”

In the lawsuit filed on October 12, Jane Doe said her experience at the hotel left her feeling “anguish, nervousness, anxiety, grief, worry, shock, humiliation, and embarrassment.”

In her legal action, she has filed charges against the hotel, including accusations of sexual battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, and the loss of consortium.

  • Failing to eradicate Hamas’ military capability will only lead to another escalation – Israeli Ambassador to Ghana

Failing to eradicate Hamas’ military capability will only lead to another escalation – Israeli Ambassador to Ghana

The Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Shlomit Sufa, has strongly emphasized the importance of Israel achieving victory in the ongoing conflict with the Islamic extremist group, Hamas.

In an upcoming episode of The LowDown on GhanaWeb TV, the ambassador elaborated on the reasons for this stance. She argued that winning this war is crucial because it is the only way to prevent future attacks on Israelis and innocent foreign nationals.

“This war is about exercising Israel’s right and obligation to self-defence, to defend its civilians. And those who do not want to see another war need to understand that in order to prevent another war, we need to win this war.

“We can’t have these people… people who take pleasure in killing at point blank, entire families… decapitate people; rape, torture and burn people alive… This terrorist if we do not win this war, if we are not able, if we are stopped from winning this war and totally eradicating their military capability, it would only exist and set a timer for another escalation, another war, more misery, more suffering,” she said.

She added, “I think all of us, we have had enough. It is time to free Gaza from Hamas.”

Hamas fighters breached the Gaza border with Israel on October 7, 2023, leading to a significant escalation of violence in the region. The ensuing conflict resulted in a substantial number of casualties, including the reported death of approximately 1,400 Israelis.

Israel’s extensive bombardment of Gaza has led to the tragic loss of life among Palestinian civilians. It is estimated that, as of Friday, November 3, 2023, the conflict has claimed the lives of 8,500 Palestinian civilians, which includes over 3,500 children.

  • No farmer drank lithovit as water – Witness tells court at COCOBOD trial

No farmer drank lithovit as water – Witness tells court at COCOBOD trial

Peter Okyere Boateng, the seventh defense witness, has refuted the claims made by the third prosecution witness, Dr. Yaw Adu-Ampomah, that a farmer informed him that lithovit liquid fertilizer is occasionally consumed when there is no access to clean drinking water.

It’s worth noting that this farmer, who allegedly made this statement, did not include this information in his witness statement when he appeared before the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO). Nevertheless, the prosecution strongly emphasized this oral narrative to challenge the effectiveness of the fertilizer.

Interestingly, the farmer in question, Nana Obeng Akrofi, who also serves as a board member of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), informed EOCO that he experienced a yield increase of two additional cocoa bags after applying lithovit liquid fertilizer on his 10-acre farm.

However, during cross-examination, conducted by Seidu Agongo’s counsel, Benson Nutsukpui, Mr. Okyere Boateng, the former Deputy Executive Director of Cocoa Health Extension Division (CHED) at COCOBOD, asserted in an Accra High Court that despite the liquid nature of the product, no farmer trained by CHED would ever consider drinking lithovit liquid fertilizer, as alleged.

“Did you meet any of the farmers drinking lithovit as water,” the witness was asked on Thursday, November 2, 2023.

“My Lord a big no,” the witness stated, stressing, “I wouldn’t expect any farmer who has gone through CHED extension education to even taste any agrochemical let alone drinking it.

“My Lord, let me add that the farmers have been trained to look at every agrochemical as a potential poison irrespective of the actual toxicity level or sidal effect, that is the cleaning ability.”

During further questioning, counsel inquired whether the witness, during his visits to cocoa farms, had ever received any complaints from farmers that the lithovit fertilizer was indistinguishable from regular water.

“My Lord I never received any form of complaint from the farmers that I met on the farms, rather it was all commendations and singing of praises of the efficacy of the fertilizer,” he told the court president over by Justice Aboagye Tandoh.

Mr Okyere Boateng, also said his regional managers did not complain to him about the efficacy of lithovit

“My Lord I have said here severally that all regional managers including the Eastern region praise lithovit and lobbied for more supply, and therefore I never received any complaint. Though I personally did not go to the Eastern region, they never brought any report that seems to complain. So far as I’m concerned there is no complaint about lithovit fertilizer that came to me.”

Meanwhile, the witness has also maintained that he never met the second accused person, Seidu Agongo, nor any official from his company Agricult Ghana Limited before the court processes.

“My Lord I have already said it in my evidence that I had never met the A2 being described here until I came to this honourable court,” he said.

Former COCOBOD Chief Executive Dr. Opuni, businessman Seidu Agongo, and Agroindustrial Company Agricult Ghana Limited are currently facing trial on 27 charges. These charges include allegations of willfully causing financial loss to the state and violating the Public Procurement Act in connection with the procurement of Lithovit liquid fertilizer during the period from 2014 to 2016.

The case has previously been presided over by two different judges. The third trial judge, Justice Aboagye, has faced accusations of bias and unfair treatment toward the primary accused.

Despite this, the trial judge has dismissed a motion requesting his recusal from the case.

  • GHC61M, GHC81m: Amount of money Ken, Bawumia spent on T and T for NPP Primaries

GHC61M, GHC81m: Amount of money Ken, Bawumia spent on T and T for NPP Primaries

It is alleged that some New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates who participated in the recent flagbearer election that both Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, allocated a total of one hundred forty-two million, four hundred and seven thousand three hundred Ghana cedis exclusively for transportation allowances for the delegates.

This figure is calculated by multiplying the number of participating delegates by the amount that both leading candidates reportedly distributed to each delegate.

Videos circulating online depict delegates claiming that Agyapong provided GHC300 as transportation allowances (GHC61,031,700 in total), while Vice President Bawumia offered GHC400 (GHC81,375,600 in total).

This means that each delegate received a total of GHC700 from both candidates on the election day to facilitate their travel from their residences to the polling stations for casting their votes. When this amount is multiplied by the total of 203,439 delegates who partook in the elections, the sum reaches GHC 142,407,300.

It is essential to note that these funds are distinct from those allegedly shared with the delegates before the election day, as well as other gifts such as cars and motorcycles, all aimed at influencing the delegates’ voting choices.

Sir Collins, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), voiced his significant dissatisfaction with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his team due to the purportedly modest amount of GH¢400 promised to the delegates.

In an interview with GHOne TV, Collins expressed his profound displeasure and considered it an insult that Dr. Bawumia, a hopeful for the party’s flagbearer position, provided delegates with only GH¢400.

He argued that it didn’t make sense that Kennedy Agyapong, a rival candidate supposedly with less support from party members and government officials, offered GH¢300, while Bawumia, with greater resources at his disposal, did not offer a substantially higher amount.

Meanwhile, there are reports that not all the delegates received the funds shared.

Sammi Awuku explains the thinking behind Bawumia’s “It is possible” slogan

On April 5, 2023, Vice President Dr Bawumia posted a picture that had the Ghanaian flag to the left and the NPP’s red, white, and blue flag to the right, with the inscription “It Is Possible” at the top of the two flags.

This was before he announced his decision to contest the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership race.

Six months later, Dr Bawumia becomes the NPP flagbearer after beating his closest contender, Assin Central MP, Ken Agyapong during the party’s presidential election on November 4, 2023.

But all this while, much has not been said about his slogan. A member of his campaign team, Sammi Awuku, has provided details explaining the origin of this slogan and its purpose.

In an interview on JoyNews’ The Probe over the weekend, Mr Awuku noted that the slogan was crafted by Dr Bawumia himself due to its significance to him.

According to Mr Awuku, there were naysayers who dismissed Dr Bawumia’s chances of ever becoming NPP’s leader due to his religion and ethnicity, but for the Vice President, his notion remained ‘it is possible’ hence the slogan.

“He mounted a spirited campaign. For many people, when he started, they said it wasn’t possible but he was determined to make history. That slogan ‘it is possible’ was not coined by anybody of the campaign team. It was coined by himself.

“In political campaigns, you test the slogans. Our focus gurus, people coming with all sort of ideas but the ‘It is possible’ slogan came from him. And his belief is that it is possible to also do it together. Many people with the mindset that the NPP will never go for a candidate who is a non-Akan. He believes that is was possible.”

“Many people who believed that it would never get to the point where tbbe party would go for a non-Christian, he believed it was possible,” he added.

A total of 203,439 delegates participated in the election conducted on November 4, in the various constituencies across all 16 regions of Ghana.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia polled 118,210 votes, representing 61.43 percent, Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong garnered 71,991 votes (37.41 percent), former Agric Minister, Dr Afriyie Akoto got 1,459 votes (0.76 percent) and former Mampong MP, Frimpong Addai-Nimoh secured 781 votes, representing (0.41 percent).

  • Kwame Nkrumah’s true prophecy about the suffering of Ghanaians today

Kwame Nkrumah’s true prophecy about the suffering of Ghanaians today

In 1968, two years after his overthrow, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah wrote a book titled “Dark days in Ghana”. In this book, he demolishes the “big lie” that Ghana had needed to be rescued from “economic chaos”. He also exposes the systematic sell-out of Ghana’s assets to neo-colonialist interests by the military regime.

President Nkrumah highlights one of the first acts of the traitorous military regime, which was to abandon the Seven-year development plan that had been put in place. A development plan that was, in his words, “going to give the Ghanaian people the only worthwhile independence— real economic independence.”

The military traitors set about dismantling the economic achievements Ghana had attained under President Nkrumah’s rule. The many industries that had been established were left to collapse or sold off. State farms, rubber and cotton plantations, and other rural development projects were intentionally neglected.

The consequences of these acts by the traitors, in Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s own words, “meant the mass of Ghanaian workers, peasants and farmers had been returned to the position of “drawers of water and hewers of wood” to Western capitalism.

The dictionary definition of “drawers of water and hewers of wood” is: those who do menial or servile work at the behest of others; physical labourers.

So in simple terms, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s prophecy was that, the sellout of Ghana’s assets and the surrender of Ghana again to foreign domination meant that Ghanaians had been returned to the position of laborers in their own land as was the case during the colonial era.

Indeed, to buttress his point, Osagyefo repeats again in his book that; “For the ordinary men and women of Ghana, the sellout of Ghana has meant a return to all the exploitation and uncertainties of colonial days.”

These declarations were made by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah 55 years and in these 5 decades, Ghana has been to the IMF for financial bailouts on 17 different occasions.

An important fact to note here is that, all of these 17 IMF bailouts happened after 1966 with Nkrumah out of power. Indeed, President Nkrumah makes clear in his book “Dark Days In Ghana” how he rejected a loan from the IMF due to the political conditions attached to it.

It is well-known how IMF loans always come with conditionalities that are not favorable to the countries that accept them and Ghana along with most African countries are the proof that IMF policies and conditionalities do not bring development. Rather, they have undermined the economic sovereignty of African countries and are a key factor in the perpetual underdevelopment across the continent of Africa.

Not only has Ghana had to go begging the IMF 17 times for financial bailout ever since the 1966 overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana has also been declared a Heavily indebted poor country(HIPC) in the early 2000s and just a few months ago, the Ghanaian Cedi was the worst performing currency in the whole world with inflation rising to its highest in 21 years — at an incredible 50.3%.

All of these facts prove that not only was Ghana in a precarious position in the years after the removal of Nkrumah from power but also that, Ghana is very much an economic mess today with Ghanaians in exactly the position Nkrumah declared in 1968. Desperate, despondent and exploited in their own land.

But do not take my word for it. Let us look at the facts.

The minimum wage in Ghana today is a 14 cedis and 88 pesewas. A meagre $1.26 is how much Ghana’s government deems it fit as the lowest amount Ghanaian workers should be paid for 8 hours of work on any given day.

Not only is it legal for Ghanaians workers to be paid woefully inadequate wages that can only be described as poverty wages , Ghanaians workers are also exploited and abused in all kinds of ways by employers.

Ghana, today is a heaven for foreign investors and a hell for its own people who find themselves in a position of unprotected and exploited cheap labor.

Is the Nkrumah prophecy of Ghanaians being forced into being “hewers of wood and drawers of water” after his overthrow beginning to make sense now?

The brutal exploitation and uncertainty that most Ghanaians face today is so bad that you will find many Ghanaian youth today who are wishing for the slave ships to be brought back just so that they can escape the hardship in Ghana.

They say, this time, they do not have to be forced onboard but they themselves will willingly get on board.

Think about this for a moment. This should make clear how bad things really are for the Ghanaian masses.

All of this has happened exactly because of the reversal of Ghana’s industrialization process.

Under President Nkrumah, over 60 more factories and industrial plants were established to process the abundant raw materials Ghana is blessed with. This was to ensure that Ghana was no longer simply exporting her raw materials on the cheap and importing everything her people needed.

Ghana was producing matches, shoes, nails, sweets, chocolate, soft drinks, whisky, biscuits, paints, canned fruit, insecticides and many more.

But, many young Ghanaians today have no idea all these goods were once upon a time being manufactured locally in Ghana.

Young Ghanaians have grown up being told Ghana produces nothing. Not even matches but under President Nkrumah, there was a factory established specifically for the production of matches at Kade.

But, just like basically of all of the other factories, the Kade Match factory was neglected and left to rot by subsequent governments.

The Prophecy of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah has proven correct for the past 55 years and continues to be validated each day that passes.

VRA, Energy Minister to answer to Parliament over Akosombo dam spillage on Wednesday

The Minister of Energy and the Volta River Authority (VRA) management are scheduled to appear before Parliament on Wednesday, November 8, to deliver an update on the Akosombo Dam spillage and its impact on communities along the Volta River basin.

Over the past few weeks, numerous residents in parts of the Volta and Eastern Regions have been forced to leave their homes, as their properties, including farmlands, have been inundated and destroyed by the excess water released from the dam.

During a parliamentary session, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Minister of Energy, reassured that his department is committed to providing the necessary accountability.

“Even though VRA is under the Ministry of Energy, we take responsibility. It is a national disaster, an emergency. It is not only affecting people in the South… I am not the lead government agency.”

“There is an inter-ministerial advisory team, but we will take responsibility and come to inform you about what VRA has done and hasn’t done once we have completed everything… And I do pledge that if it is next week Wednesday, I will be here with VRA,” he stated.

I’m definitely winning Dome Kwabena seat – Adwoa Safo

Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, is highly optimistic that she will emerge victorious in securing the Dome Kwabena candidacy during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) constituency primaries.

Madam Adowa Safo who has now returned to the country and resumed her parliamentary duties following a close-to-year absence, has declared her intention to seek re-election to parliament.

After casting her ballot at the just-ended presidential primaries, which saw Vice President Dr Mahammudu Bawumia emerge victorious, she noted that “I’m definitely winning.”

“You can see, it is obvious,” she added while urging all to unite following the elections to ensure the NPP emerges victorious in the 2024 elections.

“I expect that the best leader wins. I expect that after winning, we bring everybody on board, all hands on deck. We need that to win 2024 elections,” she stated.

For orphan constituencies, elections would be held from August 1 to December 2, 2023.

The opening of nominations with sitting MPs would be held on December 20, 2023 and closing of nominations would be held on January 4, 2024 and elections would be slated for February 24, 2024.

Madam Adwoa Safo has apologised to her constituency members and her political party for her previous absence.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) expressed its approval of the public apology made by the MP.

The Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, stated that her apology is viewed positively and contributes to the party’s image. “She has done something positive and the party welcomes her apology,” Haruna Mohammed said.

However, some New Patriotic Party (NPP) executives in the Dome-Kwabenya constituency say they have taken the apology by Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, with a pinch of salt.

The NPP constituency Secretary for Dome-Kwabenya, Theophilus Larbi, described her apology as habitual, adding that her re-election as parliamentary candidate for the next general elections could adversely affect the party’s chances in the constituency.

Adwoa Safo introduces son to the media

Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has ‘outdoored’ her eldest son, Ohene Safo Agyapong, whose illness caused her absence from Parliament for close to a year.

In May 2022, Adwoa Safo explained to Ghanaians that she was residing in the United States in order to cater for her ailing son.

“As you know, my son is unwell and has to transition to school, so I have to ensure that all that is settled before I can resume my duties and that is exactly what I am doing,” she said.

“I have been doing a lot to take care of my children which the law requires and as you know here in the foreign land, I have to comply with whatever I am directed to do and until all that is sorted out, I have to do what I have to do, and then I will return to my duties,” she added.

Over the weekend, Adwoa Safo participated in the just-ended NPP primaries, and during this exercise, she introduced her son, whom she says is in good health condition.

He was flown to Ghana to pay a visit to his grandparents.

“This is my son. He is my eldest son. He is Ohene Safo Agyapong. By God’s grace he is well now. He came to visit his grandparents and also show himself to the public and thank God,” she said.

In the meantime, the Member of Parliament, who has now returned to the country and resumed her parliamentary duties, albeit without her ministerial role, has declared her intention to seek re-election to parliament.

She has also offered her apologies to her constituency members and her political party for her previous absence and is currently conducting stakeholder consultations in preparation for the NPP’s upcoming parliamentary primaries.

Godfred Dame actively working to resolve Trafigura $140m judgement debt – Deputy AG

The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, is leading a government negotiation team in discussions with the Singaporean commodity trading firm Trafigura, according to one of his deputies, Diana Asonaba Dapaah.

The goal is to establish a payment plan to settle a $140 million judgment debt awarded to Trafigura by a London court.

This judgment allowed Trafigura the right to seize and auction Ghana’s assets in the United Kingdom following the cancellation of a power purchase agreement in 2017. Property associated with the Ghana International Bank in London has already been earmarked for potential auction.

Deputy Attorney General Diana Asonaba Dapaah has reassured the public that the Attorney General is overseeing the situation and that all state assets in the United Kingdom are secure.

In an interview on JoyNews, she said: “We are working on it because there is a lot that goes with litigation including settlement and I believe that very soon, we should be able to give you some good news on the outcome of Trafigura.

“We are clearly on top of it. The Attorney General has been to the UK to help resolve the matter in the best possible way which would be mutually beneficial to all parties involved,” she added.

Recently, Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK and Ireland, Papa Owusu-Ankoma, disclosed that the Ministry of Finance has made substantial advancements in achieving a resolution.

While he acknowledged the unfortunate circumstances that led to Trafigura’s action, he emphasized that concerted efforts are in progress to address the situation.

“We will not get to that stage where these assets will be sold to defray the debts, because of progress made on reaching a settlement”, he said on JoyNews on November 2.

In the midst of government negotiations to resolve the matter, former Energy Minister Dr. Kwabena Donkor is urging President Akufo Addo to initiate an investigation into the issue.

The Pru East MP argues that the provided explanations are insufficient and suggests that a comprehensive presidential inquiry, in addition to a parliamentary probe, can provide valuable insights for Ghana’s future while holding accountable those responsible for any wrongdoing.

“First of all, I call for two inquiries – one at the level of the presidency. The president must institute an internal inquiry to unravel what led to this. The cabinet is advisory to the president and not the final decision-maker of the land in terms of executive power.

“Cabinet is advisory to the president so the president in cabinet is a different business because then the president has the power. That is why I am calling on the president to institute an internal inquiry for two reasons – to know where we really went wrong in terms of the process and what lessons we have to learn as a nation at the level of the executive to avoid a recurrence going forward,” he said.

“Another inquiry at the level of the legislature since the decision to terminate was taken by the executive arm of government, it is the legislature that has oversight responsibility over the executive,” he added.

Mahama Ayariga accuses GAF of stalling investigations into Bawku killings

Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has pinned the slow delivery of justice to families affected by the Bawku killings on the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

In a letter to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) dated November 6, Mr Ayariga noted that since filing his complaint on June 14, 2023 on the matter, the GAF has failed to tender its response to the Commission.

Mr Ayariga has therefore demanded that the Commission provide the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) a deadline to present its information on the matter to speed up the investigation.

“I have seen copies of letters your office wrote to the Ghana Armed Forces to respond to my complaints. Since then, I have not heard anything in relation to the matter.”

“I therefore demand that you give the military a deadline to respond to your inquiries. I also expected that CHRAJ would have visited the community to speak to victims to gather evidence beyond whatever the Ghana Armed Forces would say in their response but this has not happened.”

Mr Ayariga stressed that he “will not accept any attempt by the military to avoid accountability for the killings of innocent people in Bawku.”

He assured that the people of the Zoogin community will continue to demand justice for those who “were unjustly killed by members of the Ghana Armed Forces in their community.”

Early this year, nine individuals were shot and killed by the military in separate attacks at different locations within the Bawku Municipality.

The tragic incident happened after the military allegedly accused civilians of deliberately defying curfew hours to engage in shootouts.

On January 26, this year, civilians; namely, Dauda, 50, and Sally, 59, both residents of Patelmi, in the Bawku Municipality, were allegedly subjected to severe torture and shot dead by the men in uniform after being accused of flouting curfew rules and regulations.

Again, on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at about 1 pm, eight other civilians were shot and killed by the military at the Songuri and Zougin communities.

The deceased have been identified as Issah Kasim, Madi Mamudu, Mumuni Ndego, Issifu Karim, Eliasu Ayuma, Gafaru Sumaila, Kudus Haruna and Sumaila Adamu.

Five others died as a result of sporadic gunshot attacks, as civilians went ‘neck-to-neck’ with the security over the latter’s alleged brutalities.

Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has called on the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to expedite its probing into the alleged military brutality against Bawku residents.

In a letter to CHRAJ dated November 6, Mr Ayariga demanded that the Commission provide the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) a deadline to present its information on the matter to speed up investigation.

According to the MP, he has noted the delay in the GAF’s response after his complaint on June 14, 2023.

E-levy forced 1 million Ghanaians to render their mobile money inactive – ISSER

A research study conducted by the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) has revealed that approximately one million mobile money accounts became inactive following the implementation of the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy) in May 2022.

This resulted in a decline in the total number of accounts, reducing from 19.1 million to 18.1 million by July 2022.

According to ISSER’s review, the number of registered and active accounts and agents continued to rise in January 2023, although the number of active accounts dropped by 100,000 in February 2023.

Between March and April 2022, there was a decrease of 10 million in the total number of transactions, and the total value dropped by GH¢2.8 billion. Likewise, between April 2022 and May 2022, the total number of transactions fell by 21 million, and the total value decreased by GH¢16.3 billion.

During June 2022, there was a reduction in the total number of transactions, followed by a period of recovery between July 2022 and November 2022. Ghanaians quickly turned to alternative payment systems when the E-levy was introduced.

Furthermore, ISSER reported that initially, less than 7% of the target revenue was realized, with only ¢93 million out of GH¢1.4 billion raised. Interestingly, upon the announcement of the E-levy, there was an increase in the usage of alternate payment systems, such as GHIPPS instant pay, cheques cleared, and internet banking.

After the E-levy rate was adjusted to 1%, ISSER noted a drop in the usage of alternate payment systems. However, these figures increased again in February 2023, indicating that the effect of the revision was short-lived.

In conclusion, ISSER observed that the E-levy failed to generate the expected revenue. Furthermore, it emphasized the significance of the tax rate, suggesting that even marginal reductions (e.g., 0.5%) could influence the acceptance or rejection of a tax policy by stakeholders.

We have spent the last seven years working on the problems – Bawumia tells OccupyJulorbiHouse protesters

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has recognized the validity of the demands presented by the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protesters, noting that their concerns cannot be disregarded.

The recently elected flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) affirmed that the government is actively considering these matters and has been dedicated to addressing them.

In his victory speech on Saturday, November 4, Dr. Bawumia urged the youth to work in partnership with the government to alleviate the challenges faced by the people of Ghana.

“While on the campaign, I became aware of a 3-day demonstration staged by the young people of our country. They had a simple message for the political class: they needed more opportunities for work, they needed improved living conditions, and they wanted improved public services. These are legitimate demands and we cannot ignore them. We will continue to work hard for the people of Ghana.”

“I have spent the last seven years working alongside the President to fulfill many of these demands, including creating opportunities for the youth, improving the well-being of our people, expanding access to secondary education and healthcare, enhancing the country’s road infrastructure, streamlining access to public services, and leveraging technology for development.”

The #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest occurred from Thursday, September 21 to Saturday, September 23, 2023, as demonstrators voiced their concerns about various issues in the country.

The protesters specifically expressed their discontent with the government’s economic policies and raised allegations of corruption. During the protests, over 50 of their members were apprehended by the police.

The incident incited public anger as many Ghanaians criticized the police for employing excessive force against unarmed civilians.

Dancing and pointing to God: How JDM responded to Bawumia’s victory

On Saturday, November 4, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was declared the winner of the New Patriotic Party’s presidential election to represent the ruling party in the 2024 general elections.

Now, it is official that he will compete against the candidate from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, in the upcoming December 2024 general election.

There have been reports that votes from the north cannot now be predicted due to the two flagbearers hailing from the north.

Surprisingly, the NDC and former president John Mahama have been captured, jubilating the selection of Dr Bawumia.

In a video gone viral, Mr Mahama, draped in all-white attire, was spotted dancing. At a point, he lifted his finger to the heavens, suggesting that this was the Lord’s doing.

For the NDC, they believe Dr Bawumia being the NPP’s flagbearer, will guarantee their return to power in 2025, an assertion the ruling party has fiercely contested.

A total of 203,439 delegates participated in the NPP election conducted November 4, in the various constituencies across all 16 regions of Ghana.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia polled 118,210 votes, representing 61.43 percent, Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong garnered 71,991 votes (37.41 percent), former Agric Minister, Dr Afriyie Akoto got 1,459 votes (0.76 percent) and former Mampong MP, Frimpong Addai-Nimoh secured 781 votes, representing (0.41 percent).

Over 60 Guinean soldiers sacked after former junta leader’s jail-break

Guinea has taken action by dismissing over 60 soldiers and prison officers following the jailbreak involving former junta leader Moussa Dadis Camara and two others.

Despite the “heavily armed commandos” breaking Capt. Camara out of his cell, he was recaptured and returned to prison shortly thereafter.

The individuals involved in this incident are currently on trial for their alleged roles in the deaths of over 150 people during a 2009 protest in the capital, Conakry. Besides Capt. Camara, two other escaped prisoners have also been located.

Capt. Camara’s lawyer previously stated to the BBC that the former leader was taken against his will and expressed confidence in the Guinean judicial system, asserting that he would not attempt to escape prison.

Junta leader Col Mamady Doumbouya on Sunday said in a decree that he fired the military and prison officers for “breach of employment and misconduct”, state broadcaster RTG reports.

The dismissed military officers encompass fugitives Claude Pivi, Moussa Thiegboro Camara, and Blaise Goumou. A search operation is currently in progress to locate Mr. Pivi, a former minister of presidential security in Dadis Camara’s junta, who remains at large.

Guinea is one of several former French colonies in West and Central Africa that have experienced coups in the last three years.

One dead after alleged military brutality in Garu

One of the many victims of the recent military incursions in Garu and Tempane in the Upper East Region, has been reported dead.

Subsequent to the incident, eight of the detained residents, who were transported to Accra, have been released, but some remain in critical condition.

The brutal military operations, which occurred on Sunday, October 29, 2023, were reportedly triggered by a retaliatory attack on National Security personnel by a local vigilante group in Garu.

Addressing the media, the Member of Parliament for Garu, Albert Alalzuulga, expressed profound dismay at the military’s actions, deeming them unacceptable.

He mourned the loss of life and called on the government to take appropriate measures, including providing compensation to the victims.

“It is sad to announce to you that one of the military brutality victims in Garu has died. It is a very sad development. The youth and everybody in the area are so saddened. We are so disappointed in the military and their actions. And we are disappointed in the government as well. What happened in Garu is most barbaric; it is most unfortunate. The residents who were arrested earlier were released on Friday. While some are home safely, others had to be taken to medical facilities due to their conditions.”

“We are already calling on the government to compensate the victims, and if possible, we may have to take legal action. I don’t think that the treatment of the people of Garu was fair. I think the government needs to address this. The military is taking Ghanaians for granted. It is our tax that has bought the uniforms they are wearing. It is our tax that has bought the vehicles and guns,” he said.

On Thursday, November 9, National Security Minister Albert Kan Dapaah is scheduled to make an appearance in Parliament to provide an update on the situation.

A great showing from Ken Agyapong – Sammi Awuku

Former National Organiser for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and prominent member of the Bawumia campaign team, Sammi Awuku, has congratulated Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, for the good contest and sportsmanship he exhibited at the just-ended NPP presidential primaries.

According to Mr Awuku, although Mr Agyapong did not end up becoming flagbearer, the performance exhibited was far more outstanding than was expected.

“With all respect, Kennedy Agyapong did very well. I knew it was a tough contest. I kid you not, Ken is a consummate politician. He has been through the very rugged nature of our politics. He’s been multiple times number of Parliament. He has also been one serious advocate for reforms.

“He is a great campaigner. Yesterday, there was a great showing from Ken. Congratulations to him and his team. They did a good job,” he said in an interview on JoyNews’ The Probe.

Ahead of the polls, Mr Awuku projected that Dr Bawumia would win over 70 percent of the votes by that was not the case after a total of 203,439 delegates participated in the election conducted today, November 4, in the various constituencies across all 16 regions of Ghana.

At the end of the race, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was declared the winner of the New Patriotic Party’s presidential election to represent the ruling party in the 2024 general elections.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia polled 118,210 votes, representing 61.43 percent, Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong garnered 71,991 votes (37.41 percent), former Agric Minister, Dr Afriyie Akoto got 1,459 votes (0.76 percent) and former Mampong MP, Frimpong Addai-Nimoh secured 781 votes, representing (0.41 percent).

Mr Awuku also acknowledged feeling shell-shocked by the results that trooped in from Volta Region in the party’s just-ended presidential primaries.

In the Volta Region, Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, led the pack with 5,850 votes. Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia followed with 4,984 votes. The two other contenders, Dr Akoto Afriyie and Francis Addai-Nimoh earned 115 votes and 66 votes, respectively.

Mr Awuku noted that he was perplexed that his candidate lost to Ken Agyapong and now seeks to unravel the strategy used to ensure that.

“I think that is one of the things I’ll be looking at. I have a fair idea of what happened but this is something the rest of the team must also share their opinions on.

“I honestly believe that we have to review the results from Volta. Honestly, it was one of the results that shocked me. In terms of strategy. I don’t doubt the results. What might have gone wrong in the Volta Region. But great showing for Ken,” he said.

  • Arsenal’s Arteta ‘disappointed’ over results in game against Newcastle

Arsenal’s Arteta ‘disappointed’ over results in game against Newcastle

Mikel Arteta expressed his clear dissatisfaction when evaluating Newcastle’s winning goal against Arsenal.

In the match at St. James’ Park, the Magpies secured a 1-0 victory, with Anthony Gordon scoring in the 64th minute. However, the goal was surrounded by controversy.

VAR spent four minutes reviewing various aspects of the goal, including whether Joe Willock had carried the ball out of play, a potential foul committed by Joelinton on Gabriel Magalhaes, and whether Gordon was in an offside position.

Ultimately, the officials concluded that there was insufficient evidence to disallow the goal, leading to an impassioned outburst from Arteta.

After the game, the Arsenal boss told the BBC: “I have praised my players for the way they played and competed in this stadium against this team. The result should not be what it is — there are many reasons for that.

“If there was a team looking to win the game today it was Arsenal. Embarrassing what happened, how this goal stands in the Premier League, this league we say is the best in the world.

“I’ve been 20 years in this country and now I feel ashamed. It’s a disgrace and there’s too much at stake here. We are trying to do incredible things and be at the highest level each week.

“When we’re not good enough I hold my hands up and take responsibility.

“The outcome is nowhere near the level this league needs to have and the way this league is getting competed in. It’s not good enough. I feel embarrassed to be part of this.”

Following the match, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, who was unable to clear Willock’s initial cross towards Gordon, also commented on the matter.

He said: “We are all frustrated. My point of view is I saw the ball going out of play. I think it is a foul on Gabriel, he [Joelinton] pushes him on the back and the decision was it wasn’t a foul.

“I don’t think it was supposed to go that way. And in my opinion it was offside. We are very, very disappointed.”

  • Mahama is a formidable opponent – Sammi Awuku

Mahama is a formidable opponent – Sammi Awuku

Former National Organiser for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and prominent member of the Bawumia campaign team, Sammi Awuku, has openly recognized the strong competition posed by the opposition party’s candidate, John Dramani Mahama.

In an interview on JoyNews’ The Probe, he acknowledged that securing victory in the 2024 election won’t be a straightforward endeavor for their party.

He emphasized that while the NPP will primarily face off against Mr Mahama, he remains confident that their candidate will prevail in the 2024 elections. Mr. Awuku attributed this potential success to the strategic approach the NPP intends to implement.

    Former President John Dramani Mahama

“We are up against a very formidable opponent, but the NPP will win 2024 based on superior strategy – our message and our ability,” he admitted.

“I am confident of NPP victory in 2024 because what is the alternative? The alternative must also tell us what they intend to do. They are not new to the politics of our country,” he added.

On Saturday, November 4, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was elected to lead the NPP in a closely contested presidential primary.

In his victory speech, he urged his fellow contenders and party members to unite and collaborate in pursuit of the NPP’s goal to ‘break the 8.’

  • Newcastle ensure Arsenal first defeat in Premier League

Newcastle ensure Arsenal first defeat in Premier League

Arsenal experienced their first Premier League defeat of the season at St. James’ Park as Newcastle United secured their fourth consecutive home league victory.

Anthony Gordon, scoring his fourth goal of the campaign and impressing England manager Gareth Southgate, sealed the three points for United. Additionally, it marked the eighth clean sheet in all competitions for the Magpies, solidifying their victory.

Before the match, both teams paid tribute to service personnel, past and present, with a minute’s silence, and both squads donned poppies on their shirts.

In a heated first half that had limited goal-scoring opportunities but plenty of incidents, Takehiro Tomiyasu and William Saliba saw their shots deflected off target for the Gunners. In the 29th minute, a cleverly executed free kick resulted in a header across the goal by Dan Burn, but Callum Wilson fired over, albeit with the flag raised against Burn.

Tempers flared on several occasions during the opening 37 minutes, culminating in a confrontation between players and the two dugouts when Kai Havertz made a reckless challenge on Sean Longstaff, who was left in pain. Referee Stuart Attwell showed a yellow card and subsequently booked Longstaff, Gordon, and Fabian Schär for protesting.

After the incident, Gordon set up Bruno Guimarães, whose shot from outside the box missed the target. Shortly before halftime, Gabriel Martinelli maneuvered into the box, eluding a desperate tackle from Kieran Trippier but shot directly at Nick Pope.

Burn, with an apparent lower back injury, had to be substituted at halftime, replaced by Tino Livramento. The second half continued in a similar manner, with limited scoring opportunities but a tense atmosphere. However, in the 60th minute, Newcastle took the lead.

Joelinton muscled his way through and found substitute Jacob Murphy, who delivered a cross from a tight angle on the right. Fellow substitute Joe Willock did exceptionally well to keep the ball in play near the opposite corner flag and sent it back into the box, where Joelinton deftly set up Gordon for a close-range finish.

Amidst heavy rain, a peculiar VAR check ensued, with three potential infractions – the ball out of play, a foul, and an offside – all considered and ultimately dismissed before the goal was confirmed.

Murphy had to be substituted due to a seemingly aggravated shoulder injury he sustained against Borussia Dortmund, with Matt Ritchie coming on for his 200th appearance for the Magpies.

Eddie Howe, already missing several key players, will hope that neither Murphy nor Burn faces a long-term absence. Nevertheless, he will be without Guimarães for the upcoming weekend’s trip to Bournemouth after the Brazilian received his fifth booking of the campaign late in the match. Despite these challenges, Howe celebrated a second highly impressive win in just four days.

YouTuber ‘Mr Beast’ builds 100 wells in Africa; netizens react

US YouTuber and philanthropist Mr. Beast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, has generated a mix of praise and criticism following his announcement about building 100 wells in Africa.

His video, which has garnered over 49 million views since its release on Saturday, features the construction of 52 wells in rural Kenyan communities and an additional 48 wells in various locations, including Zimbabwe, Uganda, Somalia, and Cameroon.

Many individuals have commended Mr. Beast for his efforts in aiding rural communities, while also highlighting the issue of corruption in some African governments, which often misappropriate funds intended for such development projects.

Mr. Beast, boasting a massive following of 207 million subscribers on YouTube, holds the distinction of being the most followed account on the platform.

“I know it’s weird that a YouTuber has to do all this stuff, but someone’s got to do it. And if no one else is, we’re going to do it. It really does change the lives of the communities where we build them,” Mr Beast said of his motivation for the project.

However, Mr. Beast’s initiative has faced criticism from some Africans who argue that his video reinforces the stereotype of Africa as a poverty-stricken continent. Additionally, there are concerns about the potential environmental impact of the wells, with suggestions that they might contribute to the depletion of groundwater resources.

In response, Mr. Beast has defended his philanthropic efforts, emphasizing his commitment to using his platform to assist individuals and motivate others to engage in similar acts of generosity.

  • Rangers sweep into Viaplay Cup final after beating Hearts

Rangers sweep into Viaplay Cup final after beating Hearts

Rangers secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Hearts at Hampden Stadium in the Viaplay Cup, with an electric performance in the second half.

The Edinburgh team was left stunned as Rangers, under the management of Philippe Clement, continued their unbeaten streak with three goals in the first 15 minutes after the halftime break, including a brace from James Tavernier and a well-executed strike from Scott Wright.

Rangers, under Clement’s guidance, have been prolific in front of goal, scoring 14 goals in his first five matches in charge, with 10 of them coming in a successful week.

James Tavernier’s two goals brought his total to six in his last six games, and Rangers are now set to face Aberdeen in the final on Sunday, December 17, in Glasgow’s southside.

The match began with both teams evenly matched, but Rangers gained control early on. A precise diagonal pass from Connor Goldson found Abdallah Sima, who set up Danilo inside the penalty area, but the Brazilian’s shot missed the target.

Rangers displayed dynamic attacking rotations, as Ryan Jack’s pass found Danilo via a clever feint from Todd Cantwell, but Danilo’s shot from a tight angle went over the crossbar.

Rangers continued to apply pressure, with James Tavernier providing a cross for Sima, and Zander Clark made a reflex save to deny the Senegalese forward’s header.

Rangers looked particularly dangerous on the right flank, as Cantwell’s header from Tavernier’s delivery was saved by Clark.

Hearts had limited opportunities to threaten Rangers’ penalty area, with Leon Balogun clearing Toby Sibbick’s shot. Sima’s header from Borna Barisic’s corner also missed the target.

At halftime, Clement made a substitution, bringing in Scott Wright for Cantwell. Shortly after the restart, Rangers were awarded a penalty when a short backpass from Kye Rowles allowed Danilo to be brought down by Clark. Tavernier, the captain, confidently converted the penalty to give Rangers the lead.

The game quickly turned in Rangers’ favor, as Frankie Kent’s header was saved by Jack Butland, leading to a counter-attack that ended with Scott Wright scoring a goal reminiscent of his strike in the Scottish Cup final against Hearts last year.

Hearts had their moments, with Stephen Kingsley’s long-range effort requiring a fantastic save from Butland.

Rangers put the game beyond doubt when Wright was fouled by Rowles, and Tavernier scored a stunning free-kick, leaving Clark with no chance.

Wright had another chance to score but narrowly missed the target. Hearts managed to score a consolation goal from the penalty spot after Lawrence Shankland was fouled by Ben Davies.

The referee signaled six minutes of added time, and Rangers advanced to their first cup final of the season, all in the first attempt.
