Jude Bellingham, Levi Colwill miss England’s Euro 2024 qualifiers

Jude Bellingham and Levi Colwill will be absent from England’s Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia due to shoulder injuries.

Although initially included in Gareth Southgate’s squad, both players have opted to withdraw to concentrate on their recovery. Southgate has not yet announced replacements for either of them.

Bellingham, at 20 years old, has played a pivotal role in England’s recent success, particularly in notable victories against Italy and Scotland.

His impressive performances extend to his club career at Real Madrid, where, since joining from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, he has scored 13 goals in 14 appearances, making a significant impact. With 27 caps for the Three Lions already, his absence will be felt in the upcoming qualifiers.

His absence was always likely after Real boss Carlo Ancelotti revealed that “he can’t play with England” due to injury.

At 20 years old, Levi Colwill, who recently made his senior international debut in the 1-0 friendly victory over Australia, will miss England’s Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia due to a shoulder injury. Considered the sole left-footed defender in Gareth Southgate’s squad, Colwill was expected to play a significant role.

Having made 14 appearances for Chelsea under manager Mauricio Pochettino this season, Colwill’s breakthrough performance had positioned him as a key asset for the national team.

England is set to face Malta at Wembley on Friday and then travel to North Macedonia on Monday. Securing maximum points in these matches would likely ensure their status as top seeds for the Euro 2024 draw next month, minimizing the chances of drawing challenging opponents like hosts Germany in the group stage.

Despite joining the squad late due to personal issues, Marcus Rashford and Kalvin Phillips are expected to be available for both matches. England secured qualification for Euro 2024 with a 3-1 victory over Italy last month.

  • 23% increase in base pay not a solution to the economic quagmire – NAGRAT

23% increase in base pay not a solution to the economic quagmire – NAGRAT

President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, emphasized that the painstakingly arrived at base pay increment of 23% for the year 2024 was the outcome of a two-day negotiation between Organised Labour and the government.

Initially, Organized Labour had demanded a 75.1% increase in base pay for the upcoming year. However, on Monday, they revised their proposal to 60%, which was subsequently rejected by the government, putting forth a counteroffer of a 15% increment.

Following further discussions on Tuesday, November 14, both parties reached a consensus on a 23% raise, with an additional 2% expected in July, bringing the total to 25%.

Mr. Carbonu, speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story after the agreement, expressed that while the settled percentage is an improvement, it falls short of being a comprehensive solution to the economic challenges faced by the people.

“This salary increase was painstakingly arrived at …the general economic malaise is such that one wonders if one gets a percentage salary increase, it affects our economic situation because every day inflation is moving ahead of the monies that we have,” he said on Tuesday, November 14.

Despite his reservations, Mr. Carbonu acknowledged that the agreed-upon 23% increment, set to be readjusted to 25% in July 2024, is an improvement from the current earning levels.

On the other hand, Dr. Isaac Bampoe Addo, the Executive Secretary of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), expressed dissatisfaction with the increment. He asserted that the government should present a more favorable offer during the next round of negotiations.

Dr. Addo emphasized the need for the government to scrutinize and address inefficiencies in the system to facilitate a better deal for labor.

“Government upon government, whatever colour it is, has always complained about no money, they’ve given all sorts of reasons but we have resolved that this must change,” he added.

Ofori-Atta to present 2024 budget today

The Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, is scheduled to present the government’s 2024 Annual Budget Statement and Economic Policy to Parliament.

Leading up to this crucial presentation, there have been calls for the government to implement substantial cuts to its expenditures as a response to the challenges confronting the ailing economy.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dalex Finance and Leasing Company Limited, Kenneth Thompson, has recently issued a warning about the potential for an economic downturn in 2024 if the government persists in its current trajectory of escalating and substantial expenditures.

Speaking to the media, Mr Thompson stressed the urgency of protecting the vulnerable segments of society.

He urged a strategic focus on essential sectors, including health, education, infrastructure, food, and other critical areas, as a prudent approach to addressing the economic challenges facing the country.

Meanwhile, in response to recent events, the Finance Minister has announced that the formulation of the 2024 budget will take into consideration long-term relief measures for the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage.

Mr Ofori-Atta, who was addressing journalists after visiting the affected communities, acknowledged that while the government had already provided some relief items to the victims, there was a firm commitment to doing more.

This commitment to aiding those affected by the spillage is expected to be clearly outlined in the upcoming budget, with a specific emphasis on social interventions designed to meet the genuine needs of the affected communities.

  • My contest against Hon Sadick Abubakar was a David and Goliath situation – Francis-Xavier

My contest against Hon Sadick Abubakar was a David and Goliath situation – Francis-Xavier

Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has recounted what stands to be one of his most keen political contests ever since he stepped into the political landscape.

He juxtaposes this contest with the battle between Israel’s David and Gath’s Goliath.

In an interview on The Independent Ghana’s Personality Profile show, Mr Sosu mentioned that the 2020 parliamentary election against the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Abubakar Sadick is so far the fiercest contest he has encountered so far.

Prior to this contest, he lost narrowly in a similar primary against the then incumbent Amadu Bukari Sorogho.

Mr Sosu polled 1,486 votes as against the 1,738 votes polled by Mr Sorogho who had been representing the constituency since 2005 but eventually lost to Abubakar Sadick in the 2016 general elections.

For Mr Sosu, that was a “slim” victory for Mr Sorogho. He decided to try his luck again and became the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Madina in 2020.

This time around, he came up against Abubakar Sadick, the former Minister for Zongo and Inner City Development, whom he beat by getting 62,127 votes against his 46,985 votes to be declared a member of parliament elect for the Madina Constituency.

Recounting his victory, Mr Sosu said, “So what happened in 2020 was me getting back the 9000 votes and adding about 17,000 votes. Which was also a major point for the National Democratic Congress because Hon. Boniface Abubakar was no mere small politician.”

For Mr Sosu, the victory meant so much to him, as his contender “had been a Minister of State and a very experienced person in politics.”

“I was a novice. It was a typical David and Goliath battle. But as destiny will always have it, David will always prevail. So I think God was able to give me that very resounding victory for me to get the chance to represent the good people of Madina,” he added.

  • Election 2020 was reason behind demolition of La General Hospital – Muntaka Mubarak claims

Election 2020 was reason behind demolition of La General Hospital – Muntaka Mubarak claims

Member of Parliament for Asawase, Muntaka Mubarak, has asserted that the government never intended to reconstruct the La General Hospital and only did so to win the 2020 general election.

According to Mr Muntaka, government should have ensured funding would not be a challenge before it brought down the structure.

“The Minister being a chartered accountant and all that will know that you will not dare step forward to commence a project when you are not certain, ensure of the readiness of funds. The first thing any reasonable person would have done will be first, get a makeshift structure that you can move almost all the facilities so the hospital will still be running,” the Asawase MP said.

In his explanation, Mr Muntaka made reference to the Health Minister, Agyemang Manu’s submission provided to the House on Tuesday, November 14, which in part says “submission of proposal for value for money was done in May 2020.”

He also indicated that, per the Health Minister’s submission, “completion of value-for-money audit following the issuance of insurance coverage by Synosure was done in March 2022.”

“Two solid years to do value for money. Mr Speaker it clearly shows that there was no commitment,” Mr Muntaka added.

He also cited Page 3 of the Minister’s response which reads “following the submission of the advance payment request by the Ministry of Finance to be paid by Stanchart, the lead arranger, it came to light that one of the creditors, as part of the syndicate had gone under liquidation.”

Mr Muntaka questioned the Health Minister for failing to do the necessary checks on the banks to ensure they were capable of providing the funds.

“Mr Speaker you are entering into an agreement with banks and other institutions. What checks did you do on those banks? How sure are you that they were capable of financing it. If it was a syndicate and one has gone into liquidation, what happened to the rest?” he quizzed.

Mr Muntaka therefore came to the conclusion that the La General Hospital was demolished to enable the government win the 2020 general election.

He based this assertion on aspects of the Health Minister’s chronology of event show that signing of final contract for the reconstruction of the La General Hospital took place in July 2020; demolition of structure to make way for the new facility also in July; sod-cutting ceremony on 11th August, 2020 and commencement of preparatory work, including geotechnical studies, soil testing, and size setup for the office – September 2020.

He noted that after September 2020, “the only time they (government) started doing anything about it was in 2022.”

“I don’t anyone to tell me that all this was done because an election was pending. All it meant was to deceive the people of La,” Mr Muntaka therefore said.

Mr Muntaka entreated the Health Minister to be sincere with the public and inform them of the challenges being faced.

“Don’t raise hope when you are not sure,” he said.

In July 2020, the La General Hospital was demolished due to severe structural issues. Subsequently, President Akufo-Addo initiated the La General Hospital Redevelopment Project with a groundbreaking ceremony on August 10, 2020. However, construction has not commenced as of now.

Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has blamed the delay in the reconstruction of the La General Hospital in Accra on the withholding of funds by the sponsors of the facility.

Reacting to a statement made by the Member of Parliament for La Dade-Kotopon, Rita Odoley Sowah, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said that the sponsors withheld the funds after Ghana entered into an engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“Mr. Speaker, what has happened is that after the engagement with the IMF, funding from those sources that Parliament approved of, the funding has been withheld by the sponsors,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said.

“Mr. Speaker, until the nation is given a clean bill of health by the IMF, it is going to be difficult for the funding to be released. This is why the government now wants to situate it within the context of Agenda 111, and that will mean that the facility will have to be scaled down a bit.”

But in his update in Parliament today, Mr Agyemang Manu noted that the Finance Ministry has secured €50 million in local funding for the reconstruction of the La General Hospital

“At the 37th session of the cabinet, the president directed the Ministers of Trade and Industry, Health and Finance to find alternative sources of funding to recommence the project. Through the efforts of the three-man committee, the Minister of Finance has now identified funds locally to continue the project with the same simple work scope but a reviewed price of 50 million Euro,” he said.

He noted that borrowing from a syndicated group to undertake the construction of the La General Hospital has checked the cost implications for financing.

In response to this information, the Member of Parliament for Asawase, Muntaka Mubarak, faulted the Minister for failing to disclose the source of funding.

“Is it Rawlings Park or Kejetia Market or where, you want us to believe that sincerely you have found money and you are going to deal with it.”

Per the minister’s briefing, the contractors have pledged to return to site when they receive the money in their account.

For Mr Muntaka, this does not indicate the contractor’s confidence in the government’s ability to provide the funds.

“You know that when there is confidence and the contractor knows proper documentation has been done, he will not ask you that give me money before I go to the site. He will go to the site, work and raise certificate for you to pay. Why is the contractor telling you that let the money hit my account first? It shows that everyone around the project does not trust what the government is saying.”

More hospitals need to be demolished – Health Minister tells Parliament

Minister for Health, Agyemang Manu, has expressed the need for several health facilities that lack structural integrity to be pulled down.

He made this known when he appeared before Parliament on Tuesday, November 14, to answer questions on the stalled works with regards to the La General Hospital.

According to Mr Agyemang Manu, there is the need to demolish several hospitals in the country just like the La General Hospital to prevent the loss of lives in the future, but due to lack of funds, government is unable to do so.

He noted facilities such as the Elmina Polyclinic, the Korle-Bu surgical block, Akyem Oda Government Hospital, among others, need to be levelled for reconstruction.

“It is true, there are several hospitals in this country that need to be pulled down tomorrow morning. But you know, when you don’t have adequate funding, you can’t do everything at a go. Salt pond, Elmina, Oda, Korle Bu (surgical block), we need to pull down all these facilities and rebuild them,” he said.

The Minister took the opportunity to inform the House that work on the Komfo Anokye Maternity block has been suspended after its demolition due to lack of funds.

“La General Hospital is not the only hospital that has been pulled down, and we are not working on it. We have pulled down Komfo Anokye Maternity Block. It was there for nearly 44 years,” he said.

He also noted that there were plans to raze down the Korle Bu Maternity block for reconstruction, but due to the current La General Hospital situation, there has been a u-turn.

“We started working on the Korle Bu maternity block. Parliament approved funding, signed agreement, loan was procured, but as I speak, we have suspended work in that place because of the experience with La.

“We just haven’t been able to pull down the maternity block and it is a very dangerous thing for us as I speak. We are using an adjourning land in Korle Bu unlike La, because we have lot of space to do the work,” he said.

Touching on the stalled work on the La General Hospital, which has garnered the wrath of many residents and a section of the public, the Health Minister assured that government “wants to see that hospital back.”

In July 2020, the La General Hospital was demolished due to severe structural issues. Subsequently, President Akufo-Addo initiated the La General Hospital Redevelopment Project with a groundbreaking ceremony on August 10, 2020. However, construction has not commenced as of now.

Following this, the Chairman of the Greater Accra caucus of the Minority, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has threatened that the group, along with residents of La and Ga Mashie, will stage a demonstration if the government fails to include funding for the La General Hospital in the 2024 budget.

But in his update in Parliament today, Mr Agyemang Manu noted that the Finance Ministry has secured €50 million in local funding for the reconstruction of the La General Hospital

La General Hospital is not the only hospital that has been pulled down, and we are not working on it.

Two Seikwa Oyoko traditional stools go missing

Two Oyoko Traditional stools, an emblem of heritage, have vanished from the throne room of the Seikwa Traditional Council in the Tain District of the Bono Region.

This incident occurred after the stool had been secured away for six years following the passing of the late Seikwamanhene, Nana Kwaku Dwumah Ankoana II.

During the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the late Nana Kwaku Dwumah Ankoana II, the Oyoko Royal Family made a troubling discovery—two of their revered traditional stools were missing from the hallowed throne room.

Adehyepanin Kwadwo Asubonteng, representing the Oyoko Royal Family, expressed reluctance to secure the throne room.

However, pressure from certain elders of the traditional council and the Tain District Security Committee (DiSEC) led to the forceful decision to lock the room, a move now connected to the mysterious disappearance of the cherished stools.

“I told them (the DiSEC) not to lock the room due to some traditional rites we’ll perform, but they insisted and locked it, I got the information a few weeks ago which says two of the traditional stools belonging to the Oyoko Royal Family are missing, I was shocked to hear that but I did nothing until the traditional leaders sent messengers, including the traditional priest officially to inform me about the missing stools” the Adehyepanin narrated.

Per information validated by Abusuapanin Kwadwo Asubonteng, a visit to the throne room confirmed the unsettling truth: the crucial and revered stools were indeed missing, prompting an urgent need for their recovery.

In the pursuit of locating these significant artifacts, the Adehyepanin and his group took proactive measures, directing their efforts to the Seikwa River deity. Here, they conducted a libation ceremony in hopes of uncovering the individuals responsible for the disappearance.

Moreover, during this investigation, they made an additional disconcerting discovery – the resting place of the late Nana Kwaku Dwumah Ankoana had been interfered with, further complicating the situation.

“Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the late Nana Kwaku Dwumah with these unmemorable acts has caused the Oyoko Royal family in a state of much bitter grief,” Nana Kwadwo Asubonteng said.

The matter has been officially reported to the Tain District Police, who have commenced investigations into the incident.

No significant change! What happened to the gold, oil and others? – Catholic Bishops’ President quizzes govt

The President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, has expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of Ghana’s economy.

Despite the country’s oil production and abundant mineral resources, he remarked that there is little to celebrate regarding the nation’s unstable economic conditions.

“There have been no significant positive changes in the economy since we became an oil-producing country. What happened to the gold and other mineral resources? Why are most of our roads in such a deplorable state? Why do we keep going to the IMF? Why do we keep borrowing so much when we are a rich nation?” he quizzed.

Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi delivered these comments on Monday, November 13, 2023, during the commencement of the 2023 plenary assembly of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference held in the Sunyani Diocese.

He also criticized successive governments for the significant decline in the country and the increasing levels of corruption.

“Both governments keep borrowing, and we are now in a deep financial crisis. Why are we in this economic and financial quagmire? The massive uncontrolled corruption is suffocating the nation. It appears corruption is legalized. What should Ghanaians do since the existing form of democracy help only a few and leaves the majority behind? What about the impunity and arrogance of some politicians and their defence of corruption?”

“Should the constitution not be changed or bettered for it to work for all Ghanaians instead of for a few? Should the legal system not be re-equipped to uproot corruption? What about our Parliament where the interest of the people is sacrificed for personal and party interests? Why have we not implemented the findings of the Constitutional Review Committee?

“Can the governments explain to us why we are in this economic mess? What explanations can the two political parties give to Ghanaians for the unfavourable agreements we sign on our oil, minerals, power generation etc.? Countries that have these resources in abundance are rich. Why do we remain poor? Ghanaians no longer accept the old explanations that the Governments of Ghana have been giving.”

He expressed that the political transformations across the continent should serve as a wake-up call for politicians to revise the constitution and legal systems peacefully within a democratic framework, ensuring that the government functions for the collective welfare of all the people of Ghana.

  • Rawlings was angry because NPP is a property-owning party – Fritz Baffour

Rawlings was angry because NPP is a property-owning party – Fritz Baffour

Former Minister for Information, Fritz Baffour, has shed light on why former President Jerry John Rawlings did not see eye to eye with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to Mr Baffour, the late Rawlings strongly opposed the ideology of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) main political rival, because it identified itself as a property-owning party.

During an interview with Kafui Dey on the third anniversary of Rawlings’ passing on November 12, 2020, Mr Baffuor said, “He was a man of the people, and this was a property-owning party, but he realised that there was hope because this was a democratic process and there was a chance that we would win power back.”

He added, “He (Rawlings) believed that this was a developing country, and so everybody had to have the opportunity to be successful at whatever they were doing. If you had a property-owning democracy, they’d be more selfish with the fact that they are looking for their properties; they’d protect their properties against human beings.”

The late President Jerry John Rawlings established the National Democratic Congress (NDC) with a foundational commitment to social democracy, emphasizing values such as probity and accountability.

These principles originated during the revolutionary era when Rawlings led a military junta to power in 1981.On

On its website, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) describes itself as a centre-right and liberal conservative party in Ghana with the symbol of an African elephant.

“The party was founded on 28th July, 1992, with the aim of bringing together like-minded citizens of the country so that they may strive for Freedom and Justice by the appreciation and protection of human rights and the rule of law through the practice of true democracy; to build in this country a free and democratic system of government under which all citizens will be able to contribute to the welfare, peace, and prosperity of our nation and keep its people free from dictatorship, and oppression,” the website further adds.

Anyone who doesn’t support Bawumia is no longer an NPP member – JFK

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, also known as JFK, has announced that any party member aligning with the founder of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, or any other candidate, will automatically forfeit their party membership.

Mr. Frimpong clarified in an interview on Neat FM that the party’s regulations explicitly prohibit supporting independent candidates when there is an officially endorsed party candidate, which, in this case, is Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“Anyone who stands as an independent candidate against the officially elected member of the party or who joins or declares support for another political party or an independent candidate, when the party has sponsored a candidate in a general election or bye-election, automatically forfeits his or her membership of the party,” he said.

He added: “You are aware that not long ago, Alan Kyerematen wrote a letter to us expressing his desire to withdraw from the party. As per this policy, he is affected so it means that he is no longer part of the party.

“We have seen certain videos of people following him and claiming they will vote for both him and the NPP Parliamentary candidate. I will release a letter to such individuals to make it clear that the forfeiture policy is in effect within the party. They are no longer party members.”

His remarks follow a viral image showing Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Adentan, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, adorned in Alan Kyerematen campaign gear during a Movement For Change event.

Despite Alan Kyerematen’s resignation from the party and decision to run independently, Buaben Asamoa did not announce his departure from the NPP.

The recent statements from the NPP General Secretary confirm that Buaben Asamoa is no longer recognized as an NPP member for not supporting the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In the party’s presidential election on November 4, Dr. Bawumia secured the flagbearer position for the 2024 general elections with 61.43 percent of the votes.

Don’t count yourself an NPP member if you publicly support Alan – General Secretary

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has declared that any member of the party who aligns with the founder of Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, or any other candidate will lose their party membership automatically.

Mr Frimpong, in an interview on Neat FM, explained that the party’s regulations expressly forbid supporting independent candidates when there is an officially endorsed party candidate, who in this case is Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

His comments come after Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Adentan Yaw Buaben Asamoa was sighted in a viral image adorning an Alan campaign gear during a Movement For Change event.

After Alan Kyerematen resigned from the party in September due to some challenges with the NPP’s electoral process, among others, and announced his decision to run as an independent candidate, Mr Asamoa did not ditch the former Trade Minister, nor did he announce his exit from the party.

The recent comments from the NPP General Secretary now confirm that Mr Buaben Asamoa is no longer recognized as an NPP member for failing to support the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia won the New Patriotic Party’s presidential election, securing the party’s nomination for the 2024 general elections after a total of 203,439 delegates participated in the election held on November 4.

Dr. Bawumia received 118,210 votes, constituting 61.43 percent of the total, while Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong garnered 71,991 votes (37.41 percent). Former Agriculture Minister Dr. Afriyie Akoto obtained 1,459 votes (0.76 percent), and former Mampong MP Frimpong Addai-Nimoh secured 781 votes, representing 0.41 percent.

  • King Charles turns 75

    King Charles turns 75

Britain’s monarch, King Charles III, turns 75 today, after celebrating a day earlier at his Highgrove residence in Gloucestershire with notable figures including chef Raymond Blanc, Jay Blades from The Repair Shop, and singer Leee John.

Today, King Charles will engage in public activities, emphasizing environmental causes like visiting a surplus food distribution center with Queen Camilla. The day will also mark the official launch of the Coronation Food Project, addressing food poverty by redirecting surplus food.

A reception at Buckingham Palace for 400 nurses and midwives is part of the 75th-anniversary celebrations for the National Health Service (NHS). The NHS choir will surprise him with a birthday song, and gun salutes will echo in London and the UK.

The evening will feature a private dinner at his London residence attended by close family and friends, excluding his estranged son, Harry.

The evening celebration will be attended by close family and friends, although his estranged younger son Harry will be missing.

A spokesperson for Harry and his American wife Meghan rebutted reports they had turned down an invitation saying there had been “no contact regarding an invitation to His Majesty’s upcoming birthday”.

King Charles is commemorating his 75th birthday with a business-as-usual approach, featuring the launch of a project aimed at assisting those facing food poverty.

As part of his birthday plans, the King will receive a transatlantic phone call from his younger son, Prince Harry.

The day’s activities will also include hosting a reception for NHS nurses and midwives, with ceremonial gun salutes scheduled at prominent locations, including the Tower of London.

Emphasizing public service over extravagant celebrations, the King’s engagements will focus on the launch of the Coronation Food Project. This initiative aims to address the dual challenge of rising food insecurity among people unable to afford essentials and the wastage of millions of tonnes of surplus food.

While there will be a private dinner for close family and friends, the gesture of a birthday phone call from Prince Harry is seen by some as a potential olive branch, especially amidst previous claims of no contact regarding the birthday plans.

Highlighting the campaign in an article in the Big Issue magazine, the King said: “Food need is as real and urgent a problem as food waste.”

The King told the magazine that “cost-of-living pressures” were resulting in “too many families and individuals missing out on nutritious meals”.

The Coronation Food Project seeks to establish distribution hubs that connect surplus food with food banks and charities, facilitating the distribution of food parcels to those in need.

“There are one in five people in this country that are suffering what charities call ‘food insecurity’ – to me, they’re ‘hungry’,” says Baroness Louise Casey, co-chair of the project.

“People are going without meals,” she says.

“People are going without meals,” she says.

On Tuesday evening, an animation promoting the Coronation Food Project will be showcased on the digital advertising hoardings at Piccadilly Circus in London.

The launch of a food-sharing project on the King’s birthday holds historical significance. When Prince Charles was born on November 14, 1948, post-war Britain still faced food rationing.

To mark the birth of Princess Elizabeth’s first child, a scheme was initiated to provide a gift food parcel to families with children born on the same day. Records from the National Archives indicate that over 2,600 gift parcels, containing items such as soap, butter, dried egg, honey, marmalade, bacon, and beef, were distributed during this era of austerity.

King Charles celebrated his 75th birthday by hosting a party at his residence, Highgrove in Gloucestershire, on Monday. He also commemorated the 75th anniversary of organizations, including the NHS, inviting 400 nurses and midwives to a reception at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday.

In a symbolic move of maintaining an active role, King Charles rebranded his charities as the King’s Trust and King’s Foundation, deviating from the previous Prince’s Trust and Prince’s Foundation. His upcoming participation in the COP28 climate change summit in Dubai at the end of the month further reflects his commitment to ongoing engagement.

At the age of 75, King Charles now ranks as the sixth longest-lived British monarch, trailing behind Elizabeth II, Victoria, George III, Edward VIII, and George II.

Withdraw the insults and apologize to the CDS – NMC orders Onua TV, Captain Smart

The National Media Commission (NMC) has issued a final warning to Onua Radio/TV and Captain Smart concerning an inflammatory broadcast.

In a press statement dated Tuesday, November 14, 2023, the NMC highlighted Captain Smart’s direct insult towards the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) and other Commanders of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), referring to them as “beasts” during a recent broadcast.

The NMC further pointed out that Captain Smart had alleged without providing evidence that these officers misappropriated funds intended for soldiers on peacekeeping operations.

Describing the broadcast as “dangerous” and “unprofessional,” the NMC noted that it had previously warned Onua Radio/TV about promoting violence against the state in December 2022, and the station had not taken corrective measures.

Onua Radio/TV and Captain Smart are required to comply with the following by November 19, 2023:

    1. Withdraw the insults and issue an apology to the CDS and his commanders.
    2. Apologize to the Ghanaian public for the use of vulgar language.
    3. Implement measures to curtail the station’s dangerous behavior and enhance its capacity for regulatory compliance.

    Below is the full statement

    FINAL CAUTION AGAINST INCITEFUL BROADCAST

Last week, your station carried an inciteful broadcast in which Captain Smart directly insulted the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) and other Commanders of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) as “beasts.” He claimed the officers embezzle monies meant for soldiers on peacekeeping operations but offered no evidence to back his claims.

This was as dangerous as it was unprofessional.

You may recall that on December 8, 2022, we drew your attention to the use of your station to promote violence against the state and your management’s lack of capacity to address same. This was after we had written to your management on December 2, 2022.

It is of concern to us that the behaviour persists after we drew the board’s attention. We are now compelled to come to the board again as a way of giving the company a last opportunity for internal gatekeeping.

We ask that you put in measures to stop the dangerous behaviour of the station and improve the station’s capacity for regulatory compliance. We also ask the station to withdraw the insults and apologise to the CDS and his commanders. We further ask the station to apologise to the Ghanaian public for the use of vulgar language.

We expect you to undertake the above and present evidence of same to us before November 19, 2023 after which date you may hear further from the Commission.

    Yours faithfully

AS Monaco coach Adi Hutter has delivered a strong statement concerning the future of defender Mohammed Salisu.

While Monaco maintains its position at third in the French Ligue 1, attention has shifted to the anticipated return of Salisu from a persistent groin injury.

During a post-match press conference, Coach Hutter emphatically stated that Salisu, the 24-year-old Ghanaian center-back acquired from the English Premier League side Southampton, will not be given an automatic starting position upon his return.

Corruption has been legalized and it is suffocating the country – Catholic Bishops’ President

President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, has voiced concern about the pervasive and uncontrolled corruption that he believes is stifling Ghana.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2023 plenary assembly in the Sunyani Diocese on November 13, 2023, Rev. Gyamfi expressed dismay over the country’s persistent impoverishment despite being an oil producer.

“Can the governments explain to us why we are in this economic mess? What explanations can the two political parties give to Ghanaians for the unfavourable agreements we sign on our oil, minerals, power generation etc.? Countries that have these resources in abundance are rich. Why do we remain poor? Ghanaians no longer accept the old explanations that the Governments of Ghana have been giving,” he said.

He highlighted the debilitating impact of uncontrolled corruption, describing it as widespread and seemingly almost legalized. Rev. Gyamfi raised critical questions about the effectiveness of the current democratic system, which, in his view, disproportionately benefits a privileged few while leaving the majority of the population behind.

Furthermore, he criticized the audacious impunity and arrogance displayed by some politicians in defending corrupt practices. Rev. Gyamfi also took aim at successive governments for the deterioration in the country and the surge in corruption.

What about our Parliament where the interest of the people is sacrificed for personal and party interests? Why have we not implemented the findings of the Constitutional Review Committee?” he quizzed.

NLC, TUC call for nationwide strike against Tinubu’s govt

Nigeria’s two largest labor unions, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have instructed their members to commence an indefinite nationwide strike and stay at home starting Tuesday, defying a court order prohibiting such action.

The protest is in response to the escalating cost of living and a surge in fuel prices.

The unions have been urging President Bola Tinubu to reverse the elimination of the longstanding petrol subsidy, which had maintained low fuel prices but was deemed financially draining by the government. The government asserted that the funds saved would be redirected towards social projects.

Central to their demands, the unions are calling for an increase in the minimum monthly wage to at least $120 (£97), denouncing some of the government’s economic policies as “anti-people.”

The strike will remain until “governments at all levels wake up to their responsibilities”, TUC President Festus Osifo said in a statement.

The strike announcement comes in the wake of a recent restraining order by an industrial court in the capital, Abuja, theoretically barring the unions from initiating the strike.

The duration of the strike remains uncertain, but it is anticipated to impact crucial services in hospitals, railway stations, and schools in Africa’s largest economy.

South Tongu residents displaced over dam spillage yet to receive relief items due to lack of money for fuel

The District Chief Executive (DCE) of South Tongu, Seth Kwesi Agbi, has cited a lack of funds for fuel as the reason for the delayed distribution of relief items to victims of the Akosombo dam spillage in the area.

The South Tongu District Assembly has been holding onto these relief items intended for the victims over the past few weeks.

The DCE acknowledged the availability of the items but explained that the assembly has been unable to transport them to the affected individuals due to a shortage of funds for fuel.

“We have items at the assembly, but there is no money to hire a car for delivery. That’s the fact. We need money to fuel the car and send the items to the victims,” he stated, adding, “I have been calling the VRA and NADMO for relief items, but as of today, I have received only GH₵20,000. We have spent that amount already, but the items are available. We need financial support to transport them.”

Mr. Agbi clarified in an interview on Citi FM that the Assembly possesses vehicles but is grappling with insufficient funds to fuel them for transporting the relief items. He appealed to benevolent organizations and individuals to assist in overcoming this financial challenge, ensuring the timely delivery of the items to the victims.

Meanwhile, some victims affected by the flooding caused by the Akosombo dam spillage are now returning to their residences, as the floodwaters have receded and several communities have undergone fumigation in the weeks following the incident.

National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) had previously indicated that the Volta River was displaying signs of receding and maintaining its regular course. Consequently, stagnant floodwaters in certain areas are subsiding.

Donations made to Akosombo dam spillage victims

Deputy Director General of Technical and Reforms at NADMO, Seji Saji Amedonu, said, “We have some structures that were completely covered, some structures that the water was at the base level and some structures that the water was at the window level, some also less than the window or about two feet. Those ones have the residents moving back immediately the water depleted.”

“When the water receded, some places were completely dried out and those one are the areas that some fumigation were done but there is still pools of water in the Mepe township. We are working very hard now and for four or five days we have been pumping the water into a channel that will lead it back into the river. So for returning to their homes, quite a lot of people have returned to their homes,” he added.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) initiated the spilling of excess water from the Akosombo and Kpong Hydro Dams on September 15 due to escalating water levels. The spillage was brought to a halt on October 30, 2023.

In the aftermath of the prolonged spillage, numerous inhabitants residing along the Lower Volta Basin witnessed the loss of their residences and agricultural lands to the ensuing floods.

The spillage affected a total of nine districts, with particularly devastating impacts felt in the South, Central, and North Tongu districts within the Volta Region.

Once vibrant communities such as Battor, Tefle, Mepe, Sogakope, Adidome, and Anlo found themselves submerged.

According to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NaDMO), over 26,000 individuals were displaced and left homeless as a consequence of this calamity.

In response, various organizations and individuals have extended support by providing essential relief items to assist the affected residents.

Over 6,400 Ghanaian students studying in US in 2023 – report

The Open Doors Report, released on Monday, November 13, 2023, and shared by the US Embassy in Ghana, reveals that over 6,400 Ghanaian students pursued their education in the United States during the 2022–2023 academic year.

Published annually by the Institute of International Education (IIE), the report analyzes the statistics of international students studying in the United States.

“U.S. colleges and universities offer world-class educational opportunities, and Ghanaian students in the United States are deepening the ties of friendship, family, and business between our countries.  We are so happy to see Ghanaians seeking to learn, develop their skills, and return to Ghana to benefit their communities,” said U.S. Ambassador to Ghana Virginia Palmer.

Ghana has achieved a position among the top 25 countries globally for sending the highest number of students to the United States, according to the recently published Open Doors Report on Monday, November 13, 2023. The report highlights that a record-breaking 6,468 Ghanaian students studied in the United States during the 2022-2023 academic year, marking a substantial 31.6% increase. Among them, 4,140 were enrolled in graduate degree programs, representing a notable 38% surge from the previous year and positioning Ghana as the 14th largest sender of graduate students to the United States.

In the same period, Ghanaian students secured nearly $9 million in scholarships, distributed across more than 700 higher educational institutions in all 50 states. To accommodate the rising demand, the U.S. Embassy processed a record number of student visa cases in the last fiscal year.

The United States maintains its status as the leading destination for international students, hosting over one million (1,057,188) international students in the academic year 2022-2023, marking a 12% increase from the previous year.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields remain the predominant focus for international students, with mathematics and computer science continuing to lead as the primary fields of study in 2022/23.

This year, the U.S. Embassy in Ghana hosted the two largest EducationUSA college fairs ever held in the country, in Accra and Kumasi, attracting more than 13,000 students, parents, and academic professionals. The U.S. Embassy actively supports qualified individuals in navigating the application process for U.S. colleges and universities through EducationUSA, the U.S. Department of State’s network of education advisers.

Ghana currently houses two EducationUSA Advising Centers at the U.S. Embassy in Accra and at ACE Consult in Asokwa, Kumasi. EducationUSA Advisors collaborate with students both in-person and virtually to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the college or university application process, fostering successful applications.

Over the past year, EducationUSA advisers from these centers in Accra and Kumasi assisted thousands of Ghanaian students in applying for admissions to accredited U.S. institutions of higher learning.

Creative arts will be one of the many sectors NDC will focus on – Emmanuel Bedzrah

The Member of Parliament for Ho West, Emmanuel Bedzrah, has outlined that the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government plans to make substantial investments in the creative arts sector.

This initiative is part of a comprehensive agenda aimed at fostering the growth of the creative arts industry and elevating its participants to international prominence, ultimately improving lives.

Speaking at the launch of two albums by the Apostles Revelation Society (ARS) Azagonorkofe Deladem Church Choir in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region, Bedzrah highlighted that his political party had previously established a support scheme for the creative arts.

He mentioned that the blueprint for this scheme would be updated to align with current trends, thereby propelling the arts industry forward.

“We [NDC] have started, you remember we started some time ago when [late] Professor Mills was there. He even allocated about GH₵100 million to the creative arts industry, which was used to support industry players. So, we will repeat the same thing because we know that through that we will also be able to build this industry to where it is supposed to be”, he said.

Mr Bedzrah expressed his dismay at the fact that the choral group, despite having a talented lead singer, had to resort to menial jobs such as working as farmhands and engaging in charcoal making to generate funds for producing the albums.

He pointed out the significant advancement of Nigeria’s creative arts industry, attributing it to private sector investments and effective government regulations.

“Nigeria has devoted a lot of resources to that [creative arts industry]. They support the academy, the arts, the music industry, and the film industry. There are people who invested heavily, the private sector invested heavily, government regulates and makes sure that everything that you put in there, you will get your returns on it”, he said.

Truck drivers stranded at Niger borders now surviving through menial jobs – GSA

Head of Freight and Logistics at the Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA), Fred Asiedu Dartey, has disclosed that transit truck drivers stranded at the Niger borders have been compelled to engage in menial jobs for survival.

Mr Dartey explained that since these drivers couldn’t proceed into Niger to unload goods and earn money, their only means of sustenance was through menial employment. The revelation came during a media session organized by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority’s media platform, “Eye on Port” on October 22, 2023.

“There was also the case of haulage truck drivers complaining about life at the border because you were supposed to do a journey for 7 days and here you are, two months, and you are stuck at the border. A number of them said all the money they had, had been spent so some of the drivers had to subject themselves to minimal jobs just to survive in the space,” he said.

Among the grievances expressed by the truck drivers, as shared by Mr Dartey, were concerns about potential non-payment for their trips and the damage to goods and vehicles.

Some drivers cited heavy rains causing the dissolution of the salt they were transporting, leading to rusting of their vehicles during the period of being stranded at the border.

Mr Dartey further highlighted instances of Ghanaians facing hostility from locals who considered Ghana, a member of the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS), as a political adversary. He noted the trade dynamics, indicating that while Ghana officially exported items like salt, rice, sugar, flour, and tea to Niger, Nigeriens exported onions, beans, millet, and groundnuts to Ghana.

The National President of the Borderless Alliance, Ziad Hamoui, emphasized the food security challenges arising from the Niger border closure in the Sahel region.

Mr Hamoui urged nations to reconsider their strategies for food security, pointing to potential unrest and destabilization resulting from food insecurity. He questioned whether Ghana was taking steps to ensure food sufficiency by producing certain strategic food items domestically rather than relying on imports.

The Borderless Alliance appealed to leaders to reconsider the border closure’s impact on trade, emphasizing its socio-economic consequences.

The closure was triggered by a military coup in Niger in July, disrupting trade activities as the country’s borders were shut, leaving truck drivers stranded with loaded goods.

Organized Labor demands base pay increase of over 70% in 2024

Organized Labor has initiated negotiations with the government, proposing a base pay increase of over 75% for the year 2024, citing the necessity to address the escalating cost of living.

As discussions unfolded on Monday, November 13, reports suggest that the labor union initially considered a 60% base pay adjustment.

However, the government’s counterproposal stands at a 15% increment. The Deputy General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Joshua Ansah, who shared insights on the situation during an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnight said despite labor’s willingness to compromise at 60%, the government declined the offer.

“When we tabled the 75.1 %, government came with 10%  … that is why we reviewed our stance to 60%,” he explained.

He expressed hope that meaningful progress would occur at the negotiation table on Tuesday, November 14, adding that the labor union would convene to strategize and determine their fallback position.

When questioned about the possibility of reaching an agreement before the 2024 budget reading, Mr. Ansah emphasized that the budget timeline should not compel labor to accept any government proposal hastily.

Meanwhile, on the same program, Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Bright Wireko-Brobby, appealed to the labor union to reconsider the percentage increase they are seeking.

Mr Wireko-Brobby acknowledged the government’s understanding of the labor union’s challenges but emphasized the importance of reaching an agreement that the government can feasibly fulfill.

He said “We are praying for them to accept something that will not break the back of the government. For me, I cannot give a figure to you now but we are working with them”.

  • I’m more comfortable in my house than a hotel – Joe Wise on venue for post-budget workshop

I’m more comfortable in my house than a hotel – Joe Wise on venue for post-budget workshop

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, has refuted claims that Parliament might be hesitant to host the post-budget workshop within the House due to a preference for the “comfort of hotels.”

In an interview on JoyNews, the First Deputy Speaker strongly refuted the idea, underscoring that the selection of the venue is guided by a sense of duty rather than a desire for comfort.

He said, “No hotel is as comfortable as my home. I’ve traveled around the world and no hotel I have stayed in is as comfortable as my home.”

Mr Joseph Osei-Owusu has joined other legislators in endorsing Parliament’s choice to conduct the annual post-budget workshop outside of Accra.

The Bekwai lawmaker justified this stance by stating that the House lacks the necessary logistics to host the workshop event.

His stance on the location of the yearly workshop follows a request from Buem MP, Kofi Adams, urging for this year’s post-budget workshop to take place in Parliament House in Accra.

The NDC MP referenced the current economic challenges and appealed to the House leadership to reconsider, advocating for holding the workshop in Parliament to cut costs. However, the Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin, rejected his plea.

He believes the request is opportunistic and seeks to put Parliament in a bad light adding that “This is a decision of the committee, it is not about leaders being insensitive.”

Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has rejected the use of hotels for the post-budget workshop this year, citing the current financial challenges facing the country.

It will be ineffective to hold post-budget workshop in Parliament – First Deputy Speaker

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, has joined other legislators in endorsing Parliament’s choice to conduct the annual post-budget workshop outside of Accra.

This decision, despite suggestions to hold it within Parliament to reduce costs, has gained support from Osei-Owusu.

The Bekwai lawmaker justified this stance by stating that the House lacks the necessary logistics to host the workshop event.

“We’ve tried it [post-budget workshop] once here [Parliament], it wasn’t effective. We have only one hall but during the workshop, there will be multiple presenters doing different things, so the practicality will not be effective.”

This statement was made during an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express, where the host, Evans Mensah, expressed the opinion that Parliament might be hesitant to host the event within the House due to a preference for the “comfort of hotels.” Osei-Owusu made his remarks in response to this perspective.

In response, the First Deputy Speaker strongly refuted the idea, underscoring that the selection of the venue is guided by a sense of duty rather than a desire for comfort.

He said, “No hotel is as comfortable as my home. I’ve traveled around the world and no hotel I have stayed in is as comfortable as my home.”

The First Deputy Speaker, who entered parliament in 2009 and possesses considerable domestic and global experience, conveyed his reluctance to undertake travel, be it for business or conferences. He emphasized that this stance is not a matter of personal preference but a responsibility inherent in the responsibilities of the role.

“We don’t do it because of comfort, we don’t do it because we want to, we do it because it is a responsibility.”

  • It’s been agreed Bawumia’s running mate will be from Ashanti Region – Joe Wise

It’s been agreed Bawumia’s running mate will be from Ashanti Region – Joe Wise

The demand for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate to be selected from the Ashanti region has gained support from First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu.

It is reported that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is witnessing intense competition among its Members of Parliament vying for the position alongside the newly elected flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia.

Notable names in consideration include Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Minister for Energy; Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Majority Leader; Joseph Osei-Owusu, First Deputy Speaker; and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Education Minister.

During an interview with JoyNews’ Evans Mensah, Mr. Osei-Owusu affirmed the general consensus within the party to choose a running mate from the Ashanti region.

According to the Bekwai MP, who is also a potential candidate for the position, this decision is deemed crucial for the party’s success in the upcoming 2024 general election.

“It is generally agreed in the party that if Bawumia wins, his running mate should come from the Ashanti region,” he said.

Asked whether Dr Bawumia has consented to that agreement, he replied “I think so.”

The First Deputy Speaker expressed his belief that the ideal candidate for the position should embody certain values, including integrity. He emphasized the importance of selecting an individual who commands respect both within and outside the party, aiming to complement the leadership qualities of the newly elected party leader.

According to him, even though the candidates mentioned so far to be jostling for the position meet the criteria, “they aren’t the only group of people who are eligible to be nominated and I think that the field is wide.”

Asked why he is taking himself out of the equation although rumoured to be a candidate, he said: “I think that we should allow the man the space to look at the whole game board and select.”

“I agree that the person must come from the Ashanti region because, in our party’s dynamics, it would help a lot to select from the Ashanti region,” he said.

He explained that the selection of a candidate from the Ashanti region would give “the people in the region confidence that the party values their immense contribution to the party.”

In the meantime, Sammi Awuku, a member of the Bawumia campaign team, has dismissed speculations suggesting that Vice President Dr. Bawumia is actively contemplating his choice for a running mate in the 2024 elections. During an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Monday, November 7, he clarified that the Vice President is not in a hurry to announce his running mate.

According to him, Dr Bawumia is an extremely analytical person and consults broadly on issues, and so “he would be taking the views of people he knows and when he is ready, when the time comes, he would pick the right man.”

“For now, let me issue a disclaimer. The Vice President has not discussed with any member of his inner team or bigger team about his choice that he would be recommending to the National Council,” he clarified.

  • State Prosecutor ‘fumbles’ as key witness in COCOBOD trial mounts witness box

State Prosecutor ‘fumbles’ as key witness in COCOBOD trial mounts witness box

The state prosecutor, Principal State Attorney Stella Ohene Appiah, appeared to struggle when she confronted the seventh prosecution witness, Peter Okyere Boateng, a seasoned expert on matters related to COCOBOD.

During the cross-examination, she seemed ill-prepared to challenge the witness’s testimony, allowing him to effectively educate her on the intricacies of COCOBOD’s operations.

Peter Okyere Boateng, a former Deputy Executive Director of CHED at COCOBOD, has been testifying in the ongoing trial of former COCOBOD Chief Executive, Dr. Stephen Opuni, and businessman Seidu Agongo.

They are facing charges related to alleged financial loss to the state and violations of the Public Procurement Act in the procurement of Lithovit liquid fertilizer between 2014 and 2016.

During the proceedings on Wednesday, Stella Ohene Appiah attempted to undermine the witness’s assertion that Lithovit had remarkable effects on farms.

She suggested that Lithovit was not the only fertilizer used by farmers, but her line of questioning appeared ineffective in challenging the witness’s expertise.

But Mr. Okyere Boateng, who was in charge of monitoring and evaluation at CHED told the court, “That is not true. We have educated the farmers that, one particular fertilizer is appropriate for one particular farm. No farmer who has been trained by CHED, will mix any type of fertilizer with other fertilizer. The farmers are well educated. This is a technical issue.”

“I’m putting it to you that, not only Lithovit Liquid fertilizer had been applied by the farmers on their farms, but Sidalco and other granular fertilizers have also been used,” prosecution insisted.

The witness replied, “Yes. I have said it here, that COCOBOD gives out different types of fertilizers and it’s a fact. But as I just said, each farmer gets a particular fertilizer be it granular or liquid or foliar for a particular farm. So in my report, I even compared performances of farms that have been applied with different types of fertilizers. But none of the farmers will apply more than one fertilizer on a single farm. Let me explain further that, yes, a particular farmer may get more than one particular fertilizer, but they will be meant for different farms.”

The witness had to take additional time to further enlighten the prosecution, who seemed to draw a distinction between cocoa yields and the production of cocoa.

“As I said, if you talk about CHED, yes, we don’t compile data on cocoa yield. Which is the same as the production that I have talked about. Yield and production are the same. Though at times we may use yield as a unit area production. As I sit here, I know that, the yield on production that was realized during the period of application of LLF, in 2016/2017 was the second highest production in the history of cocoa production in Ghana up to 2019/2020 and the figure was nine hundred and sixty-nine thousand metric tons.”

Again on Thursday, November 9, 2023, Stella Ohene Appiah contested the assertions made by the witness, implying a notable disparity between the fertilizers provided to farmers and the one supposedly tested by the Chemistry Department of the University of Ghana.

“So you see, you have no basis for your statement that the product tested by the University of Ghana is not the same used by farmers,” the prosecution said.

Mr. Okyere Boateng stated, “My Lord what I just said was a basis for me to say that. My Lord in July [2022] I gave evidence, what I said was that, the University of Ghana is my alma mater and that it is an institution of academic excellence, but from the observations, I made in the field, particularly in the cocoa farms on which the Lithovit fertilizer was applied and the high commendations given by the farmers on whose farms the fertilizer was applied, I knew that the fertilizer was a very good product, and therefore it wouldn’t be the same product that was taken to the University of Ghana for testing. My Lord, that is what I said, and I did not go challenging the work of the University of Ghana.”

Simultaneously, the University of Ghana’s test findings faced disapproval from the state’s own witness involved in the product, Dr. Emmanuel Yaw Osei-Twum. During his court appearance and under cross-examination, he discredited the report submitted as evidence by the prosecution, highlighting that the document had been altered.

“No we did not. We did not write those in ink, we did not put in those vertical lines. Our original report did not have those,” the state witness said in October 2020.

Moreover, the lithovit sample presented as evidence by the prosecution—asserting it was the exact product tested by COCOBOD’s CRIG—was dismissed by the state’s prominent witness, Dr. Yaw Adu-Ampomah.

During cross-examination in November 2019, Dr. Adu-Ampomah, a former Deputy Chief Executive of COCOBOD, contested the exhibit submitted by the Attorney General, affirming that it did not correspond to the lithovit fertilizer he requested CRIG to examine.

“My Lord I don’t know where this [exhibit] is coming from,” Dr Adu-Ampomah told the court, adding, “this is not what came in 2013; I don’t know whether this is the sample that you are showing to me”.

‘Euphoria’ producer Kevin Turen dies at age 44

Kevin Turen, a 44-year-old producer known for his work on HBO’s “Euphoria” and “The Idol,” has passed away.

The spokesperson for Penske Media Corporation verified the news in a statement on Sunday. No further information about the circumstances of Turen’s death has been disclosed.

“Despite his many achievements in Hollywood, Kevin’s greatest passion was his family and friends,” Jay Penske, CEO of PMC and a close friend of Turen, said in a statement.

“He was so proud of his children. He and his wife, Evelina, were resolved that their children grow up with great values and ensured they make a difference in the broader world. Our collective heart breaks for them, and we all feel such a profound sense of loss. We will miss Kevin so much, and this town lost one of its brightest rising stars today.”

Kevin Turen, a Columbia University graduate in English and Critical Film Studies, co-founded Little Lamb Productions alongside Sam and Ashley Levinson. This production company was behind successful projects such as “Euphoria” and films like “Malcolm and Marie,” “Breaking,” and the HBO miniseries “Irma Vep.” His work also extended to movies like “X,” “Pearl,” and the upcoming “MaXXXine” directed by Ti West.

He leaves behind his wife, Evelina, and their two sons, Jack and James.

This tragic loss follows the postponement of “Euphoria” Season 3 to 2025. Additionally, the entertainment world mourned the passing of Angus Cloud in July, the actor known for his role in “Euphoria,” who succumbed to a mix of harmful substances, including fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, benzodiazepine, and other drugs, leading to acute intoxication.

“It is with the heaviest heart that we had to say goodbye to an incredible human today,” read a statement from Cloud’s family at the time. “As an artist, a friend, a brother, and a son, Angus was special to all of us in so many ways.

“Last week he buried his father and intensely struggled with this loss. The only comfort we have is knowing Angus is now reunited with his dad, who was his best friend,” continued the statement.

Donald Trump’s older sister dies at age 86

Maryanne Trump Barry, elder sister of former President Donald Trump, passed away on Monday morning at the age of 86 in her Upper East Side residence in Manhattan. The cause of her death remains unknown as reported by the New York Times.

There has been no immediate response from Trump’s representative regarding this sad news.

Notably, Barry was recorded secretly criticizing her brother by her niece, Mary L. Trump, despite being a prominent supporter of Donald Trump’s business and political endeavors. She retired in February 2019 amid an investigation into alleged tax fraud related to her father’s real estate empire.

Barry’s legal career, which spanned many years, began in 1974 when she became an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey. She was one of the two women in the office at that time. Her ascent continued when President Ronald Reagan nominated her to the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey in 1983.

Further recognition came when President Bill Clinton appointed her to the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in 1999. Barry notably stood against an Immigration Court judge in a 2006 case, calling out what she deemed as “bullying” against an African refugee seeking asylum after losing several relatives in a coup.

Barry’s stance on immigration often differed from that of her brother, which was made evident in the secret recording where she criticized Trump’s immigration policies, particularly regarding the separation of children from their parents at the border.

She consistently advocated for a more compassionate approach to immigration, setting her apart from her younger brother in the public eye.

“All he wants to do is appeal to his base,” Barry told her niece. “He has no principles. None. None. And his base, I mean my God, if you were a religious person, you want to help people. Not do this.”

The former president appeared to downplay the remarks, as their opposing viewpoints on the matter were previously acknowledged. Before Maryanne Trump Barry’s comments became public, both siblings were entangled in a New York Times investigation concerning their inheritance. Barry, a former judge, was accused of violating judicial conduct by collaborating with her siblings to assess their tax responsibilities.

The investigation into these allegations led to Barry’s retirement in 2019, effectively concluding the probe.

Victoria Lamas denies entry into Leonardo DiCaprio’s 49th birthday party

Victoria Lamas, former girlfriend of Leonardo DiCaprio, wasn’t permitted entry to the actor’s star-studded 49th birthday celebration in Beverly Hills.

Pictures from the event on Saturday captured the 24-year-old actress and a friend outside the venue, stylishly dressed in a black top, matching blazer, lace tights, and heels, accessorized with a green purse.

Reports indicated that the event had a strictly controlled guest list, preventing Lamas from joining the festivity. While A-listers like Kim Kardashian, Channing Tatum, Zoë Kravitz, and more graced the party, Lamas remained outside.

Lamas was initially linked to DiCaprio at the end of the previous year, and despite earlier claims that they weren’t dating, the pair continued to be spotted together, including at a New Year’s Eve celebration in St. Barts.

Amid speculation, DiCaprio has been connected to model Eden Polani, while ongoing rumors also tied him to Gigi Hadid from September 2022 onward.

Most recently, the “Titanic” star has been in a relationship with Vittoria Cerreti. The couple were “affectionate and kissing throughout the night” at his party Saturday.

Their relationship seems to have stepped beyond a fleeting romance, as the couple was spotted engaging in public displays of affection last month at a Halloween party. A photo captured the 25-year-old model in an intimate moment, reaching out to grab DiCaprio’s rear. An insider had previously disclosed to Page Six in September that their connection is much deeper than just a passing fling.

“They’ve been spending quite a bit of time together over the past few months,” the source added. “They’re enjoying getting to know one another on a deeper level.”

The Golden Globe winner, who is often trolled for dating younger women, was last in a long-term romance with Camila Morrone from 2017 to 2022.

After his split from the “Daisy Jones & the Six” star, 26, Drew Barrymore praised DiCaprio for still “clubbing … go[ing] on yachts” at his age.

  • We have already rescued the country, what more rescuing do you want to do – Bawumia quizzes Mahama

We have already rescued the country, what more rescuing do you want to do – Bawumia quizzes Mahama

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has refuted claims that the 2024 National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearer, John Mahama, has plans to rescue the economy and the country in general.

According to the Vice President, such action is currently not needed as the economy has already been saved by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In an interview with Asaase Radio on Sunday night, November 12, he reacted to the argument by the NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama that he was going on a rescue mission for Ghana in Election 2024.

“This [Ghana] economy had to be rescued by the IMF [International Monetary Fund], they [NDC] had to go for a rescue, that was the real rescue mission, as a price of mismanagement of this economy.”

“And so they went for a rescue mission [from the IMF] and they were not even able to stay the course of the IMF programme. They went off track, so, that rescue mission by the IMF didn’t quite work because they were not following the terms of the agreement,” the Vice President added.

He continued saying, “The real rescue happened when by the grace of God with the election of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and with that election we came into office and again, all the things that were going wrong, we have tried to right them, we have very much put everything back on course.”

“We have brought macroeconomic stability, we have restored teacher training allowances, nursing training allowances, we have brought in new initiatives like planting for food and jobs, the one district one factory transformation and that is taking place and so we have really rescued this country and this economy from the mismanagement of John Mahama,” Dr Bawumia said.

He therefore quizzed, “what they mean by coming to rescue?”

“We have rescued the country already, and we are now building upon that unless maybe they are not informed,” Dr Bawumia asserted.

Kenyan preacher involved in deadly doomsday cult guilty of operating a TV studio without licence

Kenyan preacher Paul Mackenzie faced legal repercussions in a high-profile trial, but surprisingly not for the deaths of over 400 individuals associated with his doomsday cult.

The senior resident magistrate in Malindi, Olga Onalo, instead convicted Mackenzie for operating a television studio and distributing films without the necessary licence from the Kenya Film Classification Board.

The preacher, detained for more than six months following his April arrest, was linked to the discovery of numerous bodies in mass graves across his expansive 800-acre property in the coastal Kilifi county.

Allegations suggest that Mackenzie directed his followers to abstain from food, supposedly to encounter Jesus. Despite multiple court appearances, he has not faced formal charges related to these deaths, although the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions identified him as the primary suspect.

On Friday, Mackenzie was acquitted of additional charges, including influencing children against school attendance and employing radical sermons to provoke Christians against Hindus, Buddhists, and Muslims. His sentencing for the film-related offenses is scheduled for December 1, potentially carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

Prosecutors have sought a six-month extension for Mackenzie’s custody to finalize investigations, including the search for numerous missing individuals. This case has sparked conversations about the need for government regulations concerning churches in Kenya.

  • Environmental Protection Regulations failing to protect Ghana’s forest from mining, even Kakum National Park – Expert

Environmental Protection Regulations failing to protect Ghana’s forest from mining, even Kakum National Park – Expert

Executive Director of the Nature and Development Foundation, Dr. Mustapha Seidu, has expressed no surprise at a company’s move to seek permission for a mining license within the Kakum National Park in the Central Region.

He attributed what he believes is the opening of floodgates for the depletion of the country’s forest reserves to the enactment of Legal Instrument (L.I) 2462, specifically the ‘Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulations’ in November 2022.

Since the passage of the ‘Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulations’ [LI 2462], numerous mining permits have been granted to various companies. This has raised concern among several civil society organizations.

Among the approximately 14 reserves facing mining applications, Kakum National Park’s case has sparked significant public outcry, given its long-standing status as a national asset.

Speaking on JoyNews’ News Desk, Dr. Mustapha Seidu mentioned that if the regulations regarding mining in Ghana’s forests remain unchanged, similar incidents may reoccur in the future.

“The audacity to even think about applying for a mining lease in the Kakum National Park is worrying. It just tells you that there is no forest reserve in this country that is protected from mining. Every forest reserve is a candidate mining site,” Dr Seidu explained on Monday, November 13.

Following the application by the High Street Company, the Minerals Commission released a statement confirming the rejection of the said application.

“The Commission wishes to inform the CSOs and the public that the application of High Street Mining Company Limited was rejected and therefore cannot be processed or considered whatsoever. Consequently, the Commission has deleted the application from the online mining cadastre.”

During a stakeholder engagement discussing the new Regulation on Mining in Ghana’s Forest Reserve, several Civil Society Organizations cautioned that the retention of the Legislative Instrument (LI 2462) would result in further deforestation.

Renowned comedian Bovi caused quite a stir by sharing that he declined marriage proposals from three well-known actresses.

During the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), the stand-up comic disclosed that three actresses had approached him with marriage offers despite him being already married with children. He explained that he politely turned down these proposals as they came with added responsibilities.

In a statement that sparked reactions, Bovi mentioned, “Last night @afriff 3 actresses offered me marriage for a year. I turned them down because the offers came with responsibility”.

In response to his post, actress Sharon Ooja humorously suggested to Bovi that he should inform the three actresses that she functions as his wife’s personal bodyguard and would take the matter to the streets if necessary.

“Look at my guy. My own friend !!! Tell those actresses I’m Kris body guard I go meet them for streets stay blessed,” she said.

  • The white man made Dormaa people recognise the Asantehene – Historian claims

The white man made Dormaa people recognise the Asantehene – Historian claims

Historian and lawyer Yaw Anokye Frimpong has pointed out the reason behind the assertion that the chieftaincy of the Dormaa people was elevated to paramountcy status by an Asantehene.

According to the historian, in 1935, after 24 years of exile in the Seychelles, the British enabled the Asantehene, Prempeh I, to return upon which the Ashanti Confederacy was re-established following its breakdown.

“After 1896, when the Ashanti Kingdom had completely been destroyed, the confederacy broke down and they were asked not to enslave anybody and not to have any tributary state. So, the Dormaa people (the Jaman people) had their freedom,” he said.

But after its re-establishment, an indirect role, he said ensured Ashanti was placed together as one region, the western part being the Bono part.

“They (the Dormaas and the Ashantis) were under one region, so they were given one recognition and because of easy administration, the colonial masters gave an instruction to the Ashanti and to everybody.”

“So, for the Ashantis, Dormaa was under them, to the extent that the white man had made them recognise the Asantehene,” he added, stressing that “anytime the Asantehene seats in state, all the paramount chiefs under him would come, including the Dormaahene.”

He further noted that following the dissolution of the Ashanti Confederacy after Ghana gained independence, the people of Dormaa chose to operate independently, no longer bound by subordination to the Asantehene at the time.

“… it was not the Otumfuo that did that (left the Dormaa stool to paramountcy), it was not the Otumfuo… Every state that was part of the confederacy was a paramountcy. So, to start with, Dormaa was a paramountcy, but because you were part of the confederacy, you served the Gold Stool,” he reiterated.

Speaking during an Asanteman Council meeting at the Manhyia Palace on October 19, 2023, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, emphasized the importance of revisiting history to counter attempts aimed at distorting the historical narrative.

A video shared by Opemsuo Radio on YouTube featured the Asantehene discussing the induction of the predecessor of the current Dormaahene into office.

“Sampa is my town, Bono and Ahafo… Agyeman Badu (the first) took his oath here before going to assume his throne. He was a teacher here at Government Boys School. He swore in front of my uncle before assuming his position,” Otumfuo stated.

“It is because of these notorious ones that I am recounting this issue. What at all is it?” he emphasized before outlining a historical sequence of relations and how the royal politics has evolved over time.

In a response, Dormaahene Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu II refuted the Asantehene’s statement, deeming it inaccurate. He clarified that the Dormaa stool had a centuries-old existence that preceded the Asantehene stool. Hence, the claim of an Asantehene elevating the then Dormaahene to a paramount chief was implausible.

The Dormaahene expressed concern that such assertions from the Asantehene were distorting the authentic history of the Dormaa people.

“I would speak to this issue because if I don’t, I would not be able to sleep… most people think that I am the one who causes the issue (between myself and the Asantehene). Some are even saying that if I don’t take time, I might cause a war. But if you are correcting your history, is it about fighting?

“… I want to tell every Ghanaian that we the people of Adiana are not from the Ashanti Kingdom. It is never true; it is never true. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the leader of the Ashantis, we beg him if he does not know history he should not talk. How can someone from Oyoko talk about the history of the people from Adiana?” he quizzed.

The Dormaahene added, “I want to place it on record with any contradiction that the stool of the people of Adiana in Dormaa existed 300 years before that of the Ashantis was established. So if there is to be an elevation, it is not us who are to elevate them,” he said.

He reiterated that he means no disrespect to Ashantis but if their leader continuously makes wrong claims about the people of Dormaa, he would reply.

“As for this issue, I am begging him (the Otumfuo) he should stop saying it. If he does not stop, I have already said this before, if he speaks 100 times, I would respond 101 times.”

Asantehene did not lift Dormaa stool to paramountcy – Historian

Historian and lawyer Yaw Anokye Frimpong has refuted the claim that the chieftaincy of the Dormaa people was elevated to paramountcy status by an Asantehene.

He clarified that Dormaa’s stool, historically, existed as a state with its own paramount chief even before any potential involvement with the Asante Kingdom. While acknowledging Dormaa’s period of subjugation and enslavement by the Ashantis, Frimpong emphasized that the Dormaa stool retained its paramount status.

After the reformation of the Ashanti Confederacy, Dormaa once again came under the authority of the Asantehene. Frimpong reiterated that the Dormaa stool already held the status of paramountcy before this period.

“After 1896 when the Ashanti Kingdom had completely been destroyed, the confederacy broke down and they were asked not to enslave anybody and not also to have any tributary state. So, the Dormaa people (the Jaman people) had their freedom.

“Then in 1935 when Prempeh was brought back, the Ashanti Confederacy was re-established and because of indirect role, Ashanti was placed together as one region, the western part being the Bono part. • US Senator Tim Scott withdraws from presidential race

US Senator Tim Scott withdraws from presidential race

US Republican Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina has withdrawn from the 2024 presidential race.

His campaign aimed to make history by securing the Republican nomination, potentially making him the first African-American nominee from the party.

He told Fox News: “I think the voters, who are the most remarkable people on the planet, have been really clear that they’re telling me: ‘Not now, Tim.’”

Despite being well-funded, Tim Scott’s presidential campaign failed to gain significant traction in opinion polls. He has not thrown his support behind any of the remaining candidates and has explicitly ruled out running for the vice-presidency.

“I’ll be honest with you: I ran for president to be president,” he told Fox host and personal friend Trey Gowdy in the interview on Sunday, saying being vice-president was not on his “to-do list”.

Republican Senator Tim Scott, who entered the presidential race in May, positioned himself as a deeply conservative candidate aiming to bridge political divides in the United States, differentiating himself from former President Donald Trump. His campaign centered on a positive message, vowing to reinvigorate the American ethos of greatness and highlighting his personal narrative as a realization of the American dream.

The 58-year-old, the grandson of a Southern cotton field laborer, spoke of his upbringing by a single mother and the generational rise from cotton fields to Congress within his family.

Despite this optimistic vision, his withdrawal from the presidential campaign followed the third debate in Miami. In these debates, he struggled to stand out among other candidates, failing to resonate with voters. His chances of qualifying for the upcoming Republican debate on December 6 seemed uncertain.

As Mr. Trump maintained a commanding lead over other Republican contenders, he chose not to partake in the televised debates, further altering the dynamics of the Republican race.

The decision to suspend his campaign came unexpectedly for many of Scott’s team members, as reported by the BBC’s US media partner CBS.

Mr. Scott’s departure marks the second high-profile exit from the crowded 2024 US presidential race. Former Vice-President Mike Pence, aged 64, withdrew from the race in late October after encountering difficulties in securing Republican voters’ support.

Mr. Scott’s decision to exit the race comes just two months before the start of the presidential primary season in Iowa. A recent CBS News/YouGov poll indicated that he only had the support of 4% of voters, placing him in fifth place in the Republican race and trailing behind Mr. Trump.

Several major donors who had previously supported Mr. Scott, a US senator since 2013, have now shifted their allegiance to former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, who hails from South Carolina as well.

In a Sunday night post on X, the site formerly known as Twitter, Ms Haley called Mr Scott “a good man of faith and an inspiration to so many”.

“The Republican primary was made better by his participation in it.”

Restoration of faulty, damaged traffic lights has begun – Roads Ministry

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has initiated a nationwide operation to repair dysfunctional and impaired traffic lights.

This action is a direct response to the notable rise in vehicular accidents, theft, and vandalism specifically targeting traffic control infrastructure, especially traffic lights.

In its statement, the ministry highlighted that the expenses for restoring this traffic control infrastructure are as significant as those required for entirely new installations.

“This imposes additional financial burden on the ministry and the taxpayer for prompt restoration and timely maintenance,” the ministry added.

To address the damage to the traffic lights, the Ministry announced its collaboration with the police for daily patrols at the sites where new traffic lights will be installed.

Moreover, the Ministry appealed to the public to promptly report any incidents of traffic light destruction to aid in the arrest of the perpetrators.

“The Ministry in collaborating with the Ghana Police shall ensure that all persons who cause damage to Public Road Infrastructure are made to face the full rigours of the law as stipulated in L.I. 2180.

“The Ministry wishes to remind the public that it is an offence under Subsection 4 of Section 114 of the Road Traffic Regulation L.I. 2180 to cause damage to Public Road Infrastructure,” the ministry stated.

Regional Imams urge Bawumia to keep up with inter-faith dialogue

During a courtesy call at his residence over the weekend, the Council of Regional Imams commended Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, the Vice President and Flagbearer of the NPP, for his efforts in engaging with the Christian community. They encouraged him to continue these unifying interactions.

The council emphasized that recent criticisms of Dr. Bawumia’s interactions with the Christian community by NDC MP for Ningo Prampram, Sam George, were baseless.

Sam George’s remarks questioning Dr. Bawumia’s Islamic faith due to his regular engagements with Christians, referring to the Vice President as a “religious prostitute,” have been widely condemned.

A spokesperson for the Imams, speaking during the visit, highlighted that the Vice President’s frequent interactions with the Christian community aimed at fostering religious harmony in the country did not transgress any Islamic principles. The council appreciated Dr. Bawumia’s efforts in promoting religious unity in the nation.

“Your tolerance and respect for religious diversity is commendable. You are doing the right thing by maintaining a very strong relationship with the Christian community as a leader to strengthen harmony. We are one people,” said the Imams.

“The Prophet Muhammad himself had a very good relationship with non Muslims and Islam does not forbid the building and strengthening of harmonious relationship between Muslims and Christians.”

“When the Prophet went to Madina, he established a very good relationship with the Christians. There are also examples of Muslim leaders in the world, including in Muslim countries who have good relationship with their Christian colleagues.”

While condemning the comments by Sam George, the Council urged the Vice President to continue to be for all because “we are one people in Ghana.”

“The gentleman did not speak well at all because we are one people in this country. By your position, you are a politician and a leader so you belong to everyone. Continue to be for all because we are one people in Ghana.”
