Hamburg Airport child hostage situation addressed, suspect arrested – Police

Local police in Germany have reported that an 18-hour-long hostage situation at Hamburg Airport, which involved a young child, has finally come to an end.

On Saturday night, a 35-year-old man breached a security barrier, entered the airport tarmac, and parked his vehicle, which had his four-year-old daughter inside, beneath an airplane.

He eventually gave himself up to the authorities “without resistance”, according to police, and was arrested.

“The child appears to be unharmed,” they wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The incident resulted in the disruption of multiple flights departing and arriving at the airport. Although operations have now resumed, there are significant delays.

The incident began at approximately 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT) when an individual drove their car onto the airport’s apron, the area designated for parking aircraft.

According to the police, the suspect fired his weapon twice into the air and threw incendiary devices from the vehicle. It remained unclear whether the man possessed any explosives.

Subsequently, it was clarified that he halted his vehicle near a commercial flight that was fully loaded with passengers and ready to take off. Fortunately, all passengers on board were safely evacuated.

Reports from local media suggested that he had parked his vehicle beneath a Turkish Airlines plane.

As a result of the situation, hundreds of other individuals waiting for their flights at the airport had to be accommodated in nearby hotels.

Hamburg police spokeswoman Sandra Levgruen stated earlier on Sunday that the individual in question disagreed with certain decisions made by authorities regarding custody arrangements and wished to travel to Turkey with the child.

“He speaks about his life being a heap of shards,” she told German broadcaster ZDF.

Following the incident, the authorities said the man had been in an “exceptional psychological situation due to custody disputes with his ex-wife”.

Following a heated argument, he reportedly took their daughter, prompting her mother to contact emergency services and file a complaint of potential child abduction.

This isn’t the first time the man, a Turkish national, has faced allegations of abducting the young girl. Last year, he came under investigation for traveling to Turkey with her without proper authorization. Subsequently, the child was returned to Germany by her mother.

“I wish the mother, the child and her family a lot of strength to cope with this terrible experience,” Hamburg Mayor Peter Tschentscher wrote on X after the hostage situation ended.

The airport said it was working to resume operations as quickly as possible. A total of 286 flights with about 34,500 passengers had been scheduled for Sunday, it said earlier.

Liverpool draw away at Luton thanks to late equaliser from Luis Diaz

In a Premier League match on a Sunday afternoon, Luis Diaz scored a crucial goal in injury time, salvaging a 1-1 draw for Liverpool against Luton Town.

Diaz, a Colombian forward, came off the bench and headed in a cross from Harvey Elliott in the 95th minute, securing a valuable point for the Reds at Kenilworth Road.

The game witnessed an open start, with both teams exchanging early attempts on goal. Ross Barkley tested Alisson Becker with a shot for Luton, while Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez had an effort saved by Thomas Kaminski. Nunez was unlucky as his subsequent shot hit the crossbar and went over after a well-executed first touch from a Trent Alexander-Arnold pass.

Both Issa Kabore and Mohamed Salah missed scoring opportunities from close range as the end-to-end nature of the match continued. Liverpool gradually gained control as the first half progressed, and a strong run by Ryan Gravenberch created a chance for Diogo Jota, whose shot was saved by Kaminski.

However, it was Luton that had the final opportunity of the first half, with Barkley firing over the crossbar from outside the box after a partially cleared cross.

The second half started with little goalmouth action, but Alisson had to be alert to collect a low cross from Kabore that was just out of reach for Carlton Morris. Alexander-Arnold fired a long-range shot over the bar, and Luton crafted their best chance so far.

Chiedozie Ogbene dribbled past a couple of defenders and entered the box, with the ball eventually reaching Morris, who was denied by Alisson from close range.

Liverpool’s substitutes combined, with Cody Gakpo’s acrobatic attempt narrowly missing the target after a cross from Elliott. Nunez missed a great chance inside the six-yard box after Salah headed a delivery from Alexander-Arnold back across the goal. Nunez then forced a save from Kaminski following a breakaway.

Kaminski made an important save, tipping a bending effort from Gravenberch behind, but Luton’s counter-attack from the resulting corner resulted in the opening goal. Kabore delivered a cross from the right, and Chong poked the ball into the net.

Liverpool showed resilience after falling behind, and Diaz rose above his marker at the back post, nodding the ball beyond Kaminski to level the score at 1-1.

In the final moments of the match, Alisson made a crucial save, denying Kabore to ensure Liverpool left with a share of the points.

  • Spot light on Sammi Awuku, the man behind Bawumia’s victory

Spot light on Sammi Awuku, the man behind Bawumia’s victory

Our paths crossed for the first time in 2006 at the University of Ghana, specifically Commonwealth Hall. I had gone to ‘City’ to see a course mate of mine. He walked in, said a few words and checked out.

My course mate would later reveal to me that the gentleman had started the journey of aspiring to lead the students front as the SRC President. Legon has often been littered with young, vibrant and ambitious young men and women with a desire to lead the students front. Some of them had gone on to have great political careers.

It’s a long list. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Rt. Hon. Peter Ala Adjetey, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Freddie Blay and more come to mind. The Political careers of these gentlemen started long before they became the popular names we heard on radio and television. The University of Ghana served as a platform for them to nurture their leadership skills to hit the ‘road’ after school.

I thought it was always great to test one’s mettle for a leadership position and that it was really up to him (Sammy) to push that agenda if he so wished. Months later, I saw his posters pop up all over campus. To the best of my recollection as a student of the Premier University, a strong ‘City’ affinity appeared to give student leaders who vied for positions a cushion for success.

They were good at mobilizing the brothers on election day and be supportive of the entire campaign process. When they found a candidate good enough from their quarters, they rallied around the individual with unmatched support. There was a challenge he would however have to surmount. Lord Koranteng Hammah.

A charismatic, vocal, populist, magnetic, eloquent speaker. He was the man Sammy had to get past for the ultimate. In Lords corner was DM Ofori-Atta, another top guy. A duo who could arouse the emotions of the student’s body and get them onside. A duo that gave the school authorities one hell of a time in dealing with the needs and wants of students.

How I vividly recall that night on the campaign front when Hammah and DM visited Sarbah Main Hall, my Hall of residence at the time, and electrified the place with their presence. Readers who were students of the Hall would not forget that night quickly. At a point in his speech, Hammah took out a white handkerchief from his pocket, akin to Kwame Nkrumah, and made that famous statement. ‘They are few, but we are many.’

The entire electoral campaign was so intense that a decision was taken by the school authorities to literally discontinue the process. The wishes of Sam, Hammah and others to lead the students front did not materialize. They probably got on with their lives after all that intense campaign to pursue other dreams I reckon. Well, that was what I thought. Sam had other ideas though. The Legon saga was not going to end a dream.

A few years down the line, I bumped into him at the compound of one of the Media Houses in Accra where he had appeared as a guest on a political program representing the New Patriotic Party.

I got into another office at that station and the lads in there were incidentally glued to that Political program. He spoke with a lot verve and strongly. He articulated his views in a clear and dispassionate manner and seemed to be on top of a lot of issues. I just watched.

He would appear on many political shows subsequently and gradually appear to be winning the hearts and minds of many especially the Youth. He would later vie for the National Youth Organiser position and win the elections in 2014 with 471 votes. Now this was at the time the NPP was in opposition with many party faithful especially the Youth disillusioned with the outcome of the 2012 election petition and looking for that young and dynamic voice who could rally the numbers together with the support of the National Organiser. Enter Sammi Awuku.

Together with then National Organiser John Boadu who later transitioned to hold the General Secretary’s position, the duo would comb the hook and crannies of this country to solicit for votes and mounted multiple platforms with then candidate Nana Akufo-Addo. He would earn all kinds of names and titles in the process. Some he has maintained till this day. Capo appears to be the defining one.

For me, what defined Sam’s political career was the presser he addressed early on the 9th of December, 2016 with the election results filtering in. A young, confident and assertive Awuku told the world at a presser by the Youth Wing of the party that with over 80% of the votes counted, the NPP had a sizeable lead and called on the Electoral Commission to declare the party victors in the election.

He was not forcing the hand of the Electoral Commission in declaring the results. He seemed to have the numbers we were all waiting for. He knew something that many didn’t know. We know what happened later that day. Madam Charlotte Osei would announce the results in favour of the NPP.

Many young political guys appear to come out rude, disrespectful or worse after aligning with parties in power. I have seen and met loads of them across the Political divide. Some who could not afford three square meals speak with embarrassing levels of arrogance and crass. Not Sam. Polite, respectful and accommodating. He appears to have time for anyone and everything. And oh, we have crossed paths on multiple occasions since.

I was in Koforidua to cover the NPP delegates election as a media person in 2018 when he aspired for the position of National Organiser. I recall interviewing him before the vote. His message was poignant. He had set himself the task of leading the NPP to glory in 2020 as the lead organiser and he was going to make that happen if given the nod. The results of that election were announced at dawn the following morning.

He walked to our stand (Class 91.3fm) and respectfully engaged us. I asked him a simple question centered on how quickly he was rising in the party. At 3:36am, he smiled and responded courteously. ‘For God and country. This is only part of the process. I together with my other executives have a responsibility of helping the party retain power and that is the ultimate, he stressed.’

Sam may have since moved on to work with the Youth Employment Agency as Board Chairman and National Lotteries as Chief Executive but his influence and relevance is not lost on the Party faithful. His political ambitions are clear. Next step, Parliament.  He is vying for the Akwapim North seat, a traditional NPP seat in the 4th republic. Agyare Koi Larbi, Lawyer William Ofori Boafo and Nana Dokua Bissue have held the seat since 1996. Looks like a done deal from what I gather.

If the numbers I saw on the 4th of August for the Ofie Walk is anything to go by, then he is in a comfortable lead. He is a grassroots man delivering on multiple fronts in the constituency and beyond. To get the sitting MP Nana Dokua move out and contest another seat in Accra (Okaikoi North) tells a story. He is the man of the locals.

His works must have culminated in landing the job as Campaign Manager of Dr Mahamadu Bawumia ahead of the NPP Presidential Primaries. You don’t get such top jobs everyday if you are not cut out for the position. I have no idea how the Vice President settled oh him as his campaign capo. What I do know however is that Sam is a go getter, a man of the people and a man who can work the electoral numbers for victory.

In recent times when the campaign has became a bit too intense with salvos being fired from opposing camps, he has dealt with them with tact and finesse with his comments and behind the scenes diplomacy. Indeed, Hon Ken Agyepong has since revealed that following his showdown comments, a telephone conversation was facilitated by Sammy for the two(Hon Agyepong and Dr Bawumia) to iron out any issues that may have arisen.

He has already gone past the Special Delegates conference as Capo with over 66% of the votes for candidate Dr Bawumia. Can he get past November 4th and put the icing on the cake on December 7th, 2024? On the evidence of his works, it must be tough to bet against him leading his candidate to glory. Time would tell.

Akrobeto solves NSMQ’s Problem of the Day on live TV

Ghanaian comic actor and host of UTV’s ‘Real News’, Akwasi Boadi, better known as Akrobeto, has demonstrated his wit by attempting to solve the Problem of the Day in the just-ended National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ).

This was a question posed during the grand finale contest that featured Presbyterian Boys SHS, Achimota School and Opoku Ware School.

Before posing the question, Quiz Mistress Prof. Elsie Kauffman called on the Education Minister Dr Osei Adutwum to partner Akrobeto in solving the Problem of the Day.

“This round has the problem of the day. By the way, Minister for Education, this is your chance, if we can find Akrobeto, you can partner him to do problem of the day.”

Well, what she wasn’t aware of was Akrobeto’s resolution to solve the Problem of the Day.

“I’m here. I’m here. Don’t worry. Thank you very much for your respect,” he said while on live TV when hosting his show “Real News.”

The Problem of the Day read: “Two vehicles, A and B, are identical in every respect except the fuel being used.

Vehicle A contains 524.4 grams of 224 trimethylpentane, also known as isooctane.

Vehicle B also contains 542.4 grams of ethanol. Assuming that the distance traveled by each vehicle is directly proportional to the heat of combustion of the fuel used, determine how much further one vehicle travels compared to the other.”

The contestants had four minutes to present an answer. Akrobeto in a viral video showed excitement as the question was read.

Akrobeto then jumped to the drawing board, and to the surprise of many, he drew a car. The rest is for one’s very own eyes as his calculation was out of this world.

A prominent candidate in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer election, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has expressed his equanimity regarding today’s electoral outcome.

“I am going into the election. I know I can win, I know I can lose, so I don’t have a problem at all,” Agyapong stated, highlighting his readiness to accept the results, regardless of whether he wins or loses.

Agyapong’s commitment to the democratic process and his love for the party are evident as he affirms his willingness to congratulate the winner, should he not be successful. His main concern, he stresses, is the fairness of the election.

“The only time I have a problem is unfairness,” he reiterated, adding that a fair process is his utmost priority.

The NPP’s election has drawn significant attention, with Agyapong and other candidates in a tight race that could have far-reaching implications for the party and Ghana’s political landscape.

The Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, confirmed to Keminin Amanor of TV3 that the commission will release its report on the election proceedings and present it to the party.

“We will declare the results at the Accra Sports Stadium,” he stated.

The youth see Ken as the next J.J Rawlings – NDC Oti Regional Secretary

The Oti Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Gabriel Lembue, has expressed concerns about the potential implications of Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong winning the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primaries.

He believes that if Agyapong emerges as the NPP’s presidential candidate, it would pose a significant challenge for the opposition party in the 2024 general elections.

Lembue emphasized that Agyapong represents hope for many young people, who see him as a figure similar to the NDC’s late founder, Jerry John Rawlings, who is credited with bringing positive changes to the country. Therefore, Lembue has openly voiced his preference for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s success in the ongoing NPP presidential primaries.

He believes that a contest between John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s likely 2024 flagbearer, and Vice President Bawumia would be advantageous for the opposition party.

“When you have people on the streets telling you that we want this fellow, it is a revolutionary time when we had the Rawlings. People think that Ken is the next Rawlings, so we will have quite the challenge in putting people together.

“What are you going to say about Ken. Ken says I am a job creator. Our people need hope and the message of hope has been trumpted by Ken Agyapong. Personally, I won’t hide it. We have been a bit concerned.

“But I’m happy that the system is pushing for a candidate that would make it simple for us. I would wish that the NPP would overwhelmingly endorse Dr Bawumia today. I will personally celebrate.”

Meanwhile, provisional results from the NPP primaries see Dr Bawumia in the lead position. But Kennedy Agyapong is currently giving the Vice President a run for his money.

The Oti Regional Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Gabriel Lembue, has noted that should Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong emerge victorious in the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primaries, it would be a challenge for the opposition party to win the 2024 general elections.

According to him, Mr Agyapong serves as a hope for many of the youth who view him as another version of the NDC’s founder, the late Jerry John Rawlings, who is said to have changed the fortunes of the country for better.

He has therefore prayed for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s victory in the ongoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries.

According to him, it is beneficial for the opposition NDC’s 2024 flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, to contest against the Vice President.

Some electoral malpractices, such as cheating, have been raised.

Some angry polling station executives in the Ellembelle constituency of the Western region have accused the election committee of cheating.

“They have cheated us because these monies are from the national headquarters, and it is not fair at all. We are telling the national executives that they should call our constituency executives to order and add the GHC50 before we leave here”, they added.

  • Are we under rule of law or dictatorship – Security analyst shocked by ‘military assault’ against Garu residents

Are we under rule of law or dictatorship – Security analyst shocked by ‘military assault’ against Garu residents

Security analyst Dr Adam Bonaa, is shell-shocked by the maltreatment meted out to some Garu residents by National security operatives under the current government.

Information from the Ministry of National Security indicates that on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, an irate youth group armed with AK 47 rifles, machetes and other weapons besieged a team of five counter-terrorism intelligence officers deployed by the Ministry of National Security to Garu, in the Upper East Region, on a critical, special operation.

Despite initial attempts to introduce themselves as National Security personnel, the irate youth group proceeded to attack the officers by firing multiple gunshots at a black Toyota Land Cruiser in which the officers were seated.

Following an escalation of the attacks on their vehicle, the officers drove to seek refuge at the Garu Police Station. The irate youth, subsequently, pursued the officers, encircled the police station and fired multiple shots at same with the intention of killing the officers.

The Ministry of National Security and the Ghana Armed Forces, on Saturday, October 28, 2023, conducted a joint operation in Garu to seize weapons used by the perpetrators of the attack on the National Security personnel.

According to the ministry, a number of the perpetrators have also been arrested.

Per Dr Adam Bonaa’s account, some of the residents have been detained beyond 48 hours without being tried, which goes against the laws of the country.

He condemned the measures that were put in place by the military which left over 50 residents hospitalised.

According to him, such actions make it difficult to determine if the country is being governed via dictatorship or democracy.

“You stray into an area with armed personnel, beat people to a pulp, arrest some of them, move them out of the jurisdiction, and some of them run into the bushes.

“You come and lock them up for how many days. You have not taken them to any court of competent jurisdiction and so I is very difficult to say whether we are under the rule of law or under dictatorship. This is unlawful, what national security is doing. National Security cannot take these people to court. The police is there. The law says after the arrest, you take them to the police with all the evidence.

“The police will prepare them and if there is any evidence, the police will take them to court,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has informed Parliament that the National Security Ministry plans to release all eight individuals arrested in Garu following disturbances in the area.

The youth of Garu and Tempane are demanding the immediate release of their detained peers and have threatened to withdraw public services in the two communities if their demands are not met.

  • Tinubu has not requested for a yacht – President’s spokesman

Tinubu has not requested for a yacht – President’s spokesman

A presidential spokesman, Tope Ajayi, has clarified that President Bola Tinubu did not request a yacht.

This statement was made in response to the recent outrage following the publication of details of the N2.1 trillion supplementary budget submitted to the National Assembly, where the yacht was listed under the Nigerian Navy’s proposed capital expenditure of N42.3 billion.

The supplementary budget included allocations of N5.09 billion for a yacht, N2.9 billion for sport utility vehicles for the Presidential Villa, and an additional N2.9 billion for the replacement of operational vehicles for the presidency.

The yacht was categorized under the Nigerian Navy’s proposed capital expenditure of N42.3 billion.

In response to this, Ajayi expressed skepticism about the necessity of a yacht for his principal to carry out his official duties.

“The trending issues on social media since yesterday are two items in the 2023 supplementary budget. One is the provision for a presidential yacht in the supplementary budget by the Navy, and the other is over N6 billion for vehicles for the State House.”

“It is important to state clearly that President Bola Tinubu didn’t ask for a presidential yatch, and I doubt he needs one to perform the functions of his office. From what I know, the request for a yacht, however it is named or couched in the budget, is from the Navy, and they must have operational reasons for why it is required.

“The budget office should be in a position to also explain to the public why such expenditures should be accommodated now, considering the economic situation of the country. I must readily admit that the one reason our budgeting system has been the subject of public attack is the very simplistic way some of the line items are described by civil servants who prepare the budget.

“Examples abound. Sometimes in 2016, an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) project of the Ministry of Solid Minerals worth over N300 million was captured in that year’s budget as a “website”. Naturally, it generated a massive controversy as people, rightly, asked to know the type of website that would be built with N300 million.

Ajayi further stated, “It is important to say that journalism should enrich public enlightenment and not create an atmosphere of siege. It is poor reporting to always reduce State House budgetary provisions to the President and Vice President.

“When the State House makes provision for vehicles, it is reported as if it is the President that will use all the vehicles or eat all the food when a provision is made for food and catering services.

“We have had such inaccurate reporting in the past. A President and Vice President cannot, for any reason, spend N20 million naira to eat in a year if it is about the food they will eat as first and second families. How much food can a person really eat?

“Yet, we will read headlines that Tinubu, Buhari, Jonathan, or whoever the President is wants to spend N5 billion on food and catering in a year when in actual fact such budgetary provisions are made to accommodate many state events, meetings, hosting of VIPs, foreign dignitaries, and even visits by other Heads of State and bilateral and multilateral meetings that the State House will deal with in a given year,” he said.

Prof. Kaufmann reveals secret behind PRESEC’s NSMQ successes

Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, the longest-serving quiz mistress of the National Science and Math Quiz (NSMQ), shared her insights regarding the success of the Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (PRESEC) in the competition during an interview on Starr FM with host Bola Ray.

PRESEC has won the NSMQ a remarkable eight times, and they successfully defended their 2022 title in this year’s contest.

Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann attributed PRESEC’s success to the thorough preparations made by the contestants and the school’s commitment to academic excellence. She highlighted that PRESEC’s impressive performance in the competition often inspires admiration among fans, who aspire to enroll in the school to partake in such intellectual challenges.

Furthermore, she mentioned that PRESEC’s management conducts quiz programs to foster a culture of academic excellence in the school. Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann encouraged other schools to make similar investments and shift their focus from traditional cultural activities to improve their chances of winning future editions of the competition.

“It seems like their contestants are well prepared even before they get to the school. Some young Junior High School or even basic school student is watching and observing how well the school is doing and deciding their are going to attend that school. These days there are all kinds of quiz programmes. They are practicing there. By the time they get to PRESEC to come and join that team, they already have a head start.

“Compare this to a girls school picking their candidate after a mock in the final year. They have the structures in place. At PRESEC right now, I’m sure they have several different teams and they didn’t start this just yesterday. They have their first-year team. And other schools are singing and dancing, this school is doing quiz programmes. Unfortunately, they don’t get points for those things,” she said.

Meanwhile, Headmaster of Presbyterian Boys SHS, David Odjidja, says preparations have already commenced to enable the school to defend the title of National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) champions for another year.

One would have thought that the school would take a break before commencing training once again, but according to the school’s head, that is not the case.

He explained that “we take it as a project. Last year when we came with the 7th trophy, there were jubilations all over. But the next day, the boys started working towards this trophy. It took less than 24 hours for them to go back to start work.”

In an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show, Odjidja explained that the contestants undergo nerve-wracking training for two years in order to prepare for the competition.

“The boys were selected in Form 1, two years ago. They have been working throughout vacations.”

The headmaster of PRESEC emphasized the importance of the trophy for the school’s 85th anniversary.

“This trophy is badly needed for the celebration,” he said.

NSMQ gets new trophy from Asantehene to be outdoored next year

The National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) is set to undergo a significant transformation with the introduction of a prestigious trophy in 2024.

The new trophy, generously donated by Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has been presented to Primetime Limited, the organizers of the National Science and Maths Quiz.

This announcement was made by Nana Akua Aboagyewaa Mensa-Bonsu, the Managing Director of Primetime Limited, during the 2023 grand finale held in Accra.

“We would be remiss of us not to say thank you also to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, for his support of the programme, having received us on three different occasions, warmly welcoming us to Kumasi on the occasions that we’ve been there, and even donating a cup to the programme starting next year. So next year there would be a more prestigious cup to fight for,” she indicated.

The current personalized bronze trophy was introduced five years ago after St. Peter’s SHS secured their third victory, and, in accordance with the competition’s rules, retained possession of the cup.

In the past five years, St. Augustine’s College (2019) and Prempeh College (2021) have each claimed the trophy once.

NSMQ record holders, Presec Legon, have clinched the bronze-crafted trophy three times (2020, 2022, 2023) and are set to retain it after their victory over Opoku Ware School and Achimota School in the 2023 finals.

Many NSMQ enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the introduction of the new trophy next year, and without a doubt, all schools will be intensifying their preparations to vie for the honor of becoming the first to claim this coveted prize.

British Airways refutes claim to move all Heathrow-Accra-Heathrow flights to Gatwick

British Airways has confirmed that it does not intend to relocate all its Accra-Heathrow-Accra flights to Gatwick.

Instead, the airline is planning to increase the frequency of its Heathrow-Accra flights to ten times a week, including the possibility of night flights, subject to certain conditions.

In a recent exclusive interview with Joy Business in London, Neil Alan Chernoff, Chief Planning and Strategy Officer at British Airways, clarified that the decision to move its Heathrow-Accra-Heathrow flights to Gatwick in 2021 was due to specific constraints at Heathrow Airport, which no longer apply.

British Airways recently launched its London Gatwick-Accra-Gatwick flights, using Boeing 777-200 aircraft with increased passenger space and fewer premium seats. The new route also provides additional cargo capacity, benefiting Ghanaian exporters.

Chernoff mentioned that Gatwick Airport offers more convenience for travelers, and ticket prices will be determined by supply and demand dynamics. He noted that flying from Gatwick is generally less expensive than from Heathrow.

Alhassan Tampuli, Deputy Minister of Transport, recently reported that passenger arrivals in Ghana have exceeded pre-pandemic levels.

Mr. Chernoff, in response, said that “we have definitely seen demand picked up compared to what we had in 2019 for our Accra operations”.

He further explained that this increase in passenger arrivals has influenced British Airways’ decision to boost its flight frequency.

“The development is not about Ghana only. We are flying more flights than what we did in 2019 and it shows that Africa travels have reached above pre-pandemic levels”, Mr. Chernoff added.

Lower chamber of parliament rejects plan to buy presidential yacht under Tinubu’s govt

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has rejected the government’s proposal to procure a presidential yacht for $6 million amid public criticism of extravagant spending during an economic crisis, according to senior lawmaker Abubakar Bichi.

Instead, lawmakers redirected the $6 million to increase the budget for student loans, effectively doubling its allocation.

President Bola Tinubu, who assumed office in May with a pledge to reduce waste and alleviate financial burdens on citizens, sparked controversy when he presented a supplementary budget to the National Assembly.

The proposed purchase of the yacht was listed within the Nigerian Navy’s capital expenditure of $53 million.

Human rights activist and former lawmaker Shehu Sani reacted by saying that “the poor can’t be struggling for survival in a canoe while their leader is yachting”.

Mr. Tinubu’s spokesperson, Temitope Ajayi, clarified that the president had no involvement in the plans to acquire the yacht.

“From what I know, the request for a yacht, however it is named or couched in the budget is from the navy and they must have operational reasons for why it is required,” he said.

The budget, which was approved by the House of Representatives on Thursday, allocates $36 million for State House expenses, including luxury vehicle purchases and the construction of a presidential office complex. Additionally, $15 million is earmarked for the presidential air fleet.

This issue has arisen at a critical time when President Tinubu is facing significant challenges related to the cost of living and the steep depreciation of Nigeria’s currency, the naira, against the US dollar. Nigeria’s annual inflation rate reached 26.7% in September, according to official data.

A leading advocacy group in Nigeria, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (Serap), said the purchase of a yacht could not be justified when “137 million Nigerians live in extreme poverty”.

Furthermore, their situation has deteriorated following President Tinubu’s decision to eliminate fuel subsidies in his inaugural address, leading to increases in fuel prices and the cost of essential goods.

Activist Omoyele Sowore accused the government of spending on luxuries while it “maintains the miseries of the Nigerian populace”.

Mr Ajayi said the president and his vice-president were not planning to add new vehicles to their fleet, and were using “inherited vehicles” from the previous administration.

He said the budget for vehicles was for hundreds of civil servants and political aides working at State House.

People will go hungry if they don’t talk about Asanteman – Fankyenebrahemaa

Queen Mother of Fankyenebra in the Ashanti Region, Nana Akua Afriyie Owoabrempong, has indicated that the many netizens spewing false statements about Asanteman are doing so just to make ends meet.

In an interview on Opemsu TV, Nana Akua Afriyie Owoabrempong noted that such individuals will lose their daily bread should they decide to set the record straight and stop dragging the name of Asanteman and the Asantehene in the mud on social media.

“The Asanteman and the Asantehene are names that provide money when you just mention them. Today, all those misbehaving on social media are just after money. It is Asanteman that is now providing them ends meet. Let’s dare them to stop talking about Asanteman and see if their jobs will flourish. They can’t survive a week without mentioning Asanteman in whatever they do.”

Recently, there have been disagreements on the history of how the current Dormaahene, Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu II, was inducted into office.

This comes after Asantehene Osei Tutu II noted there was the need to revisit history to combat efforts from some quarters to distort history.

Addressing his people at an Asanteman Council meeting at the Manhyia Palace on October 19, 2023, the Asantehene said “Sampa is my town, Bono and Ahafo… Agyeman Badu (the first) took his oath here before going to assume his throne. He was a teacher here at Government Boys School. He swore in front of my uncle before assuming his position.”

“It is because of these notorious ones that I am recounting this issue. What at all is it?” he emphasized.

In a video shared by Abanpredease TV on Sunday, October 19, 2023, the Dormaahene responded to the Asantehene’s claims.

He clarified that the Dormaa chieftaincy has a longstanding history that predates the Asantehene chieftaincy, making it implausible for an Asantehene to have elevated the then Dormaahene to a paramount chief.

He further emphasized the significance of addressing this matter as the historical narrative of the Dormaa people is at risk of being inaccurately represented by the Asantehene.

“I would speak to this issue because if I don’t, I would not be able to sleep… most people think that I am the one who causes the issue (between myself and the Asantehene). Some are even saying that if I don’t take time, I might cause a war. But if you are correcting your history, is it about fighting?

“… I want to tell every Ghanaian that we the people of Aduana are not from the Ashanti Kingdom. It is never true; it is never true. How can someone from Oyoko talk about the history of the people from Aduana?” he quizzed.

The Dormaahene added, “I want to place it on record with any contradiction that the stool of the people of Aduana in Dormaa existed 300 years before that of the Ashantis was established. So if there is to be an elevation, is it not us who are to elevate them?”

“As for this issue, I am begging him (the Otumfuo) he should stop saying it. If he does not stop, I have already said this before, if he speaks 100 times, I would respond 101 times.”

The issue has sparked many divided opinions on social media.

  • NDC being an alternative for NPP is scary – Stephen Ntim

NDC being an alternative for NPP is scary – Stephen Ntim

National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Ntim, has expressed no sign of hope for the recovery should the ruling party be taken out of power.

The political system in Ghana is dominated by two political parties; NPP and the National Democratic Congress. The NPP, under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo has governed for 8 years.

Since 2000, no political party has had the opportunity to govern for more than 8 years concurrently.

On this matter, Mr Ntim says the ruling party must be given the opportunity to continue its works. According to him, the NDC, tipped to be the party that replaces the NPP, has nothing good to offer.

“The alternative to an NPP government is scary, and the alternative to us is empty. These statements are valid because the NDC has not put forth any policy ideas to address the youth unemployment challenge, which is the preoccupation of governments worldwide,” he said.

He made this remark during a joint press conference with the National Executive Committee and the Council of Elders at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on November 2.

On Saturday, November 4, 2023, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to select its flagbearer for the upcoming December 2024 general elections.

This marks a significant transition as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who has led the party for the past 16 years, prepares to pass the leadership baton. The NPP’s choice for the 2024 presidential race will also determine its new leader.

Four candidates have thrown their hats into the ring: Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, former Minister of Food and Agriculture; Kennedy Agyapong, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Assin Central in the Central Region; and Francis Addai Nimoh, the former Member of Parliament for Mampong Constituency in the Ashanti Region.

NPP Chair calls on members to maintain discipline to win 2024 election

National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Ntim, has emphasized the need for unity among party members following the presidential primaries scheduled for November 4, 2023.

He urged party faithful to come together and support the candidate who emerges as the winner in the internal polls.

Mr Ntim highlighted the importance of internal party cohesion and discipline as essential factors for the NPP to secure a third consecutive term in office in the December 2024 general elections.

He made these remarks during a joint press conference with the National Executive Committee and the Council of Elders at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on November 2.

“Saturday, November 4th, is crucial for the New Patriotic Party. By the close of the day on Saturday, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who has admirably led our party for 16 successful years, will perform the first of two handovers: first to one of the four aspirants who emerged victorious to succeed him as the leader of the party and second, to that same leader and flagbearer of the NPP, to succeed him as the President of the Republic of Ghana on January 7, 2025.”

“This is the nature and consequence of the November 4th flagbearer election. We are determined to win a third term because the development of Ghana depends on an NPP victory in the 2024 general elections. That victory begins this Saturday, and every member of this party has something significant to do with it. It requires that we are disciplined as a party. Failure to be disciplined, ensure internal peace and cohesion, and be responsive to our mandate will gravely imperil our electoral prospects,” Mr. Stephen Ntim said.

Emphasizing the potential harm that disunity and internal divisions can inflict on the NPP’s chances in the December 2024 elections, Chairman Ntim recounted the 2008 general elections and the factors contributing to the NPP’s painful defeat after leading the first round of voting with “49.13 percent of the total valid votes cast.”

“The most painful part of that experience is that we lost the presidential election in the second round after we had increased our votes by 321,000, whereas all we needed to win in the first round was a little over 100,000 votes.

“In other words, we gifted the NDC the elections in 2008 because our people did not come out to vote in the first round. We are at the same point today, and some of the factors that led to us losing the election in 2008 are rearing their ugly heads,” Mr. Ntim candidly observed.

“One of the chief contributors to our defeat in the 2008 general elections is the lack of unity of purpose or internal cohesion. We cannot afford to be disunited even briefly after the results are declared on Saturday. We must guard against any conduct, actions, or inactions likely to take us on a path of apathy and disunity,” the NPP National Chairman further cautioned.

During his speech, Mr. Ntim acknowledged the intense competition in the 2023 flagbearer election and recognized that a significant amount of debate and competition has transpired.

To that end, he called on the entire NPP fraternity “to wipe the slate clean and approach the Saturday, November 4 presidential primaries with a commitment to work together and support whoever emerges as the party’s leader and flagbearer.”

“There can only be one flagbearer at a time. I fondly recall the enthusiasm and unity that characterized our approach to the 1996 and 2000 elections. It was apparent we wanted to win as a party. But the height of enthusiasm and conviction with which we canvassed for victory in the 2000 general elections has waned considerably, and we must reignite it now,” Mr. Ntim said.

“The alternative to an NPP government is scary, and the alternative to us is empty. These statements are valid because the NDC has not put forth any policy ideas to address the youth unemployment challenge, which is the preoccupation of governments worldwide,” he added.

  • Respect diverse talents, apologise for ‘singing and dancing’ comment – ATWAG to NSMQ mistress

Respect diverse talents, apologise for ‘singing and dancing’ comment – ATWAG to NSMQ mistress

The Arts and Tourism Writers Association of Ghana (ATWAG) is demanding an unconditional apology from the National Science and Math Quiz (NSMQ) quiz mistress, Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, following a statement she made during an interview on Starr FM.

In the interview, Professor Effah Kaufmann acknowledged the consistent success of Presbyterian Boys Senior High School – Legon (PRESEC) in the NSMQ.

She attributed their achievements to the school’s serious commitment to learning and quiz preparation, contrasting it with other schools that she suggested might focus more on singing and dancing rather than rigorous academic preparation.

This statement has led to the demand for an apology from ATWAG.

ATWAG, under the leadership of President George Quaye, issued a statement expressing its concern over Professor Elsie’s recent statement, considering it inappropriate and indicative of a lack of respect for the arts, which encompass various forms, including singing and dancing.

“We believe it is important to recognise and appreciate the value of both science and the arts in our society. While science and math are undoubtedly crucial subjects, it is equally important to acknowledge the significant role that the arts and humanities play in shaping our world. They foster creativity, critical thinking, empathy, and cultural understanding,” he wrote.

The President of ATWAG also adds that “in light of the rapid advancements in AI and technology, it becomes even more crucial to emphasize the importance of the Arts. These fields provide the emotional and imaginative aspects that AI cannot replicate. They contribute to the fabric of our society and enhance our overall well-being.”

ATWAG is urging Professor Elsie to take a moment to contemplate the unintended repercussions of her statement and acknowledge the offense it may cause to schools and individuals who prioritize and excel in the arts and humanities.

“It is essential to respect and appreciate the diverse talents and interests of students in all fields of study,” the statement indicates.

The organization representing writers in the tourism, arts, and culture sectors is also demanding an apology from the Quiz Mistress.

“Moreover, we urge you to consider issuing a public apology to demonstrate your accountability and respect for all students, regardless of their academic pursuits. By doing so, you will help foster an inclusive and supportive environment that celebrates the contributions of both Science and the Arts.

We also call upon Primetime Limited, the producers of the show, to address this matter promptly and ensure that all participants and viewers feel valued and respected,” the group further requests.

The Arts and Tourism Writers Association of Ghana (ATWAG) is an association of Ghanaian arts writers/journalists and media workers.

ATWAG seeks to promote arts, tourism, and culture reporting in Ghana while developing the professional capacity and the welfare of its members.

ATWAG is also aimed at promoting cooperation and collaboration among its members and players in the arts, tourism, and culture value chain.

  • PRESEC organises quiz programmes, but other schools are singing and dancing – NSMQ’s Prof Kaufmann

PRESEC organises quiz programmes, but other schools are singing and dancing – NSMQ’s Prof Kaufmann

Longest-serving mistress for the National Science and Math Quiz (NSMQ), Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, has made her assertion known in a conversation regarding the Presbyterian Boys Senior High School’s (PRESEC) winning streak in the competition.

PRESEC has won the NSMQ eight times. In this year’s contest, the school defended their 2022 title.

Many have wondered why the school has been so successful in the competition.

In an interview on Starr FM on Thursday with host Bola Ray, Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann linked PRESEC’s success to well made preparations by contestants and the institution.

According to Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, fans of the contest are often mesmerized by PRESEC’s output during the race and make plans to enroll in the school. Prior to that, she noted that such students participate in quiz programmes to broaden their horizons.

On how PRESEC is helping itself to win more trophies, she stated that the management of the school also holds quiz programmes. She therefore entreated other schools to make the same investments and shift their focus from singing and dancing to stand a chance to win subsequent editions.

NDC’s strongholds can become battlegrounds due to Bawumia – Sammi Awuku

Campaign Manager for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential bid, Sammi Awuku, remains steadfast in his belief that his candidate presents the party’s best opportunity for success in the 2024 general elections.

In Mr. Awuku’s view, Dr. Bawumia possesses the capability to make significant headway in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) strongholds, particularly within the Ashanti region, where NDC support has been on the rise. He underlines the importance of Dr. Bawumia’s leadership qualities and his potential to secure more votes in the Ashanti region, while also posing a challenge to the NDC’s dominance in their traditional strongholds.

Furthermore, Mr. Awuku expresses his skepticism that any amount of mathematical calculations could lead to an NPP victory in the Volta region in 2024, but having Dr. Bawumia as the candidate transforms the political landscape.

“There is no mathematical gymnastics that can convince me that the NPP can win the Volta region in 2024. But the two other strongholds of the NDC then become a battleground when you have a candidate like Dr Bawumia.”

As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares to select its flagbearer for the upcoming elections, the field of candidates includes Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Afriyie Akoto, Kennedy Agyapong, and Francis Addai-Nimoh.

A recent poll conducted by the Institute of Research Innovation & Development at Kumasi Technical University revealed that Dr. Bawumia is the favored candidate among NPP delegates, with a high likelihood of winning the party’s presidential nomination.

The poll findings showed that 71.1% of NPP delegates believe Dr. Bawumia has a strong chance of securing victory, while 26.8% believe Kennedy Agyapong has a better chance.

Moreover, 69.9% of delegates see Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the most unifying candidate, with 19.4% considering Kennedy Agyapong as the most unifying.

When it comes to visible leadership qualities, 70.5% of participating delegates chose Dr. Bawumia, with 19.4% naming Mr. Kennedy Agyapong.

The poll indicates that Dr. Bawumia enjoys robust support among NPP delegates and is well-positioned to secure the party’s presidential nomination.

  • How NSMQ made Prof Kaufmann moderate 76 contests while ill

Longest-serving host of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), Prof. Elsie A. B. Effah Kaufmann, nearly lost her life due to her love for the competition that brings to bear the brilliance of students with respect to math and science.

The Biomedical Scientist was close to kicking the bucket after she moderated 76 NSMQ contests all by herself. She did this while being ill, and this nearly cost her her life.

She made this revelation during an interview on Starr Chat on Starr FM by host Bola Ray on Thursday.

“I have thought about it as my responsibilities have increased now. I am now a Dean, it is a good thing I only do thirteen contests in a year now. The largest number of contests I have done in a year is 76, the thing nearly killed me. It nearly killed me, I was ill in the middle of that programme and it was the year after that, that other quiz mistresses joined.”

Prof. Elsie A. B. Effah Kaufmann started moderating the NSMQ competition in 2006 and still does so. The NSMQ is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. This means that she has been moderating the contest for 17 years.

The recent contest saw Presbyterian Boys Senior High School beat Achimota School and Opoku Ware School to win its eighth trophy.

During this year’s contest, there were claims that the quiz mistress favoured some schools over others.

Fans of Prempeh College and Opoku Ware School have made these claims.

But the Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences at the University of Ghana refuted this allegation.

According to Prof. Elsie A. B. Effah Kaufmann, she has no interest in the schools hence, does not have a favorite.

“I don’t take sides, I have no interest in any school. I don’t know the contestants from anywhere. I am not interested in any school, when I get there, I am there to do a professional job. This is why you must be careful about slandering someone, because without that reputation for fairness I would not have lasted this long. If you like me to resign today, I would do so.”

GFSF is Ofori-Atta’s scheme to deprive private indigenous bank owners of their assets – Mahama Ayariga

Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has accused the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, of coming up with a scheme with the potential to deprive private indigenous bank owners the ownership of their assets.

In a petition to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Mr Ayariga noted that this scheme is the Ghana Financial Stability Fund (GFSF).

In his petition letter, Mr Ayariga noted that the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Mr. Ken Ofori Atta, seeks to establish a Ghana Financial Stability Fund (GFSF) using mere guidelines and putting it under the administration of an illegal and unconstitutional body known as Ghana Amalgamated Trust Plc (GAT) based on opaque and legislatively unauthorized management and disbursement mechanisms.

“It is a scheme with potential to deprive private indigenous bank owners the ownership of their assets in these banks after his mismanagement of the financial sector has rendered these banks vulnerable. And it has not been subjected to parliamentary oversight and scrutiny,” he added.

The Bawku Central MP referred the intentional bodies to a publication by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning (MOFEP) dated 22nd August 2023 which is said to indicate that “Government of Ghana (GoG) has established a Ghana Financial Stability Fund (GFSF). The Fund is expected to be funded by Government of Ghana and the World Bank/IMF as its major donor.”

In Mr Ayariga’s view, the said document by the Finance Ministry will seek to off load an amount of about $750 million to Ghana Amalgamated Trust (GAT) Ltd to be the main agency responsible for disbursing such funds.

He also holds the position that the Ghana Financial Stability Fund (GFSF) lacks parliamentary approval and has a fraudulent structure.

He stated that the Minister of Finance in 2019 had an arrangement with GAT, which was sponsored by the Government of Ghana as a limited liability company under the Companies Act, 2016 (Act 992), as sponsors and with NTHC as trustee shareholder in GAT which arrangement allowed NTHC as trustee to hold shares in GAT on behalf of Government.

“We have contended in court that this is an unconstitutional scheme to transfer public funds to private ownership without the requisite parliamentary approval,” he added.

On 3rd March 2022, the Bawku Central MP noted that an action at the Supreme Court of Ghana to challenge the legality of GAT and the fraudulent activities of GAT and its operations in the case of Mahama Ayariga v. Attorney General & Others (Suit No. J1/20/2022) and the issue is currently pending.

He therefore finds it strange that GAT and MoFEP, knowing well that the case is still pending in court will still want to “undertake an illegality this time on a very large scale.”

Mr Ayariga indicated that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank will be acting in clear violation of the Constitution of Ghana of 1992 “if they lend their support to this arrangement or are in anyway party to it.”

“Article 192 of the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana states categorically that a “public corporation shall not be established except by an Act of Parliament.” Article 179 recognizes the setting up of public corporations as commercial ventures.  The current arrangement by which the Government of Ghana seeks to use NTHC Ltd to hold shares in GAT for a commercial venture offends the Constitutional requirement, which vests Government with the authority to only engage in a commercial venture through the medium of a public corporation enacted by an Act of Parliament,” he added.

  • Ghanaians can now travel to Rwanda without a visa

Ghanaians can now travel to Rwanda without a visa

Ghanaians interested in visiting Rwanda can now do so without having to worry about the struggles in acquiring a visa.

This is now so because Rwandan President, Paul Kagame, on Thursday, November 2, unveiled a new policy allowing visa-free travel to the country for Africans.

The President made this announcement in Kigali, emphasizing the potential for Africa to become a unified tourism destination. Currently, Africa relies on 60% of its tourists from outside the continent, as reported by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

“Any African, can get on a plane to Rwanda whenever they wish and they will not pay a thing to enter our country” said Kagame during the 23rd Global Summit of the World Travel and Tourism Council.

“We should not lose sight of our own continental market,” he said. “Africans are the future of global tourism as our middle class continues to grow at a fast pace in the decades to come.”

This move positions Rwanda as the latest African nation to adopt such measures, with the goal of promoting the free movement of people and trade, in a bid to rival Europe’s Schengen zone.

Upon implementation, Rwanda will join the ranks of African countries that have lifted travel restrictions for Africans. Currently, Gambia, Benin, and Seychelles have already waived visas for African nationals. In addition, Kenya’s President William Ruto recently revealed plans to enable visa-free travel for all Africans to Kenya by December 31.

“Visa restrictions amongst ourselves is working against us. When people cannot travel, business people cannot travel, entrepreneurs cannot travel we all become net losers” said Ruto at an international summit in Congo Brazzaville.

In 2016, the African Union launched the African passport with considerable enthusiasm, aiming to create a travel document that would parallel the European Union model and unlock the continent’s potential. Nevertheless, thus far, only diplomats and AU officials have received this travel document.

Rwanda removes visa-restrictions on all African countries

President Paul Kagame of Rwanda on Thursday, unveiled a new policy allowing visa-free travel to Rwanda for Africans.

This move positions Rwanda as the latest African nation to adopt such measures, with the goal of promoting the free movement of people and trade, in a bid to rival Europe’s Schengen zone.

The President made this announcement in Kigali, emphasizing the potential for Africa to become a unified tourism destination. Currently, Africa relies on 60% of its tourists from outside the continent, as reported by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

“Any African, can get on a plane to Rwanda whenever they wish and they will not pay a thing to enter our country,” said Kagame during the 23rd Global Summit of the World Travel and Tourism Council.

“We should not lose sight of our own continental market,” he said. “Africans are the future of global tourism as our middle class continues to grow at a fast pace in the decades to come.”

Suspects in stolen transformer case jailed 5 years each

Two of the three individuals arrested by the Volta Regional Police Command for their involvement in an attempt to steal a transformer in Adaklu Tsrefe on October 5 have been sentenced by the Ho Circuit Court.

The two convicts, Sitsofe Agbodza (26 years) and Deladem Kodzo Tsrakasu (29 years), received five-year prison terms each after pleading guilty to theft and an attempt to destroy public property.

The third suspect, Abdul Wahab Seydou, a 20-year-old plumber, had his sentencing postponed for the next three weeks.

The circuit court judge ordered a social inquiry to be conducted on him, with the report to be submitted to the court within the specified time.

According to Benjamin Obeng Antwi, the Volta Regional PRO for the ECG, the judge based his decision on Mr. Wahab’s age (below 21 years) and the fact that he was a first-time offender, which warranted the need for a social inquiry report.

The three suspects were initially apprehended by Adaklu Tsrefe residents and subsequently handed over to the Volta Regional Police Command on October 5 for their involvement in vandalizing an ECG transformer and stealing valuable components from it.

“As a company, we are committed to providing quality, reliable and safe electricity services for our customers but the activities of these individuals prevent us from delivering our core mandate. Once the transformer is stolen, power supply will be curtailed to customers and this will affect businesses, schools and even hospitals so we humbly appeal to the general public to assist us curb this menace,” he said.

“The transformer is the most expensive component in our network and the value for the damaged transformer at Adaklu Tsrefe by these suspects is 104,000 Cedis minus labor and other expenses which affects our operations as well as our financial health. This new transformer could have been sent to communities without power supply or even extend power to other areas”, he added.

The General Manager of ECG in the Volta Region, Christina Jatoe-Kaleo, has called upon the public to remain vigilant and assist in safeguarding ECG installations in their communities, residences, and towns.

“Lately people are even stealing the earth wires at our substations and service cables of our customers which normally result in outages so let’s all come together to fight this menace. If you see anyone suspicious working at any ECG substation or facility, kindly report to the nearest police station or ECG via 0302611611, the ECG PowerApp or any of our social media handles @ecgghofficial,” she said.

The body requires only four tablespoons of oil per day – Dietician

Excessive consumption of oil has been characterized by a nutritionist at the Tema Metropolitan Health Directorate, Mr. Samuel Atuahene Antwi, as a hazardous practice that can lead to health complications such as stroke, diabetes, and weight gain.

He emphasized that the human body’s daily oil requirement should not exceed four tablespoons. Mr. Antwi also advocated for the consumption of vegetable fat over animal fat, as it provides essential omega-three fatty acids that support body development and growth.

Mr Antwi said groundnut and palm fruit, had too much oil and should not be consumed frequently; “as a dietician, I am always careful with the oily foods I consume every day.”

He encouraged individuals to cultivate healthy eating habits, which include incorporating green leafy vegetables, high-fiber foods, cereals, and drinking ample water into their diet. These practices facilitate improved digestion and metabolism.

Mr. Antwi made these remarks during the weekly “Your Health! Our Collective Responsibility” event, an initiative by the Ghana News Agency Tema Regional Office aimed at enhancing health literacy and encouraging discussions on health-related topics.

This platform serves as both an advocacy tool for public health and an exploration of the four health communication modalities: informative, educational, persuasive, and prompting.

He stressed the importance of consuming a minimum of eight glasses of water daily, emphasizing that water constitutes 80% of human blood and aids in the digestion of food. Mr. Antwi also cautioned against skipping breakfast, as it is the most crucial meal of the day, boosting energy levels and reducing the risk of illness.

Furthermore, Mr. Antwi advocated for the preservation of food through traditional methods, promoting healthier eating habits.

He underscored the nutritional benefits and cultural significance of age-old preservation techniques like sun-drying, salting, smoking, and fermenting, which have been passed down through generations and continue to be widely practiced.

Mr. Antwi highlighted that traditional food preservation methods not only extend the shelf life of perishable foods but also preserve their nutritional value, ensuring that essential vitamins and minerals are retained. Additionally, these methods promote sustainability by reducing food waste and relying less on modern preservation techniques.

“These are good food preservation practices that we have to still continue if we have the means to do them and get them done well,” he said.

Mr. Antwi stressed the safety of traditional food preservation methods, but he advised a cautious approach, especially when modern alternatives are available.

He expressed concern over the difficulty of distinguishing between proper and incorrect traditional methods, as adulteration can occur. Sometimes, individuals introduce potentially harmful preservatives to food, making it essential to strike a balance between food safety and the use of additives in daily eating practices.

Mr. Antwi emphasized the importance of educating oneself about appropriate storage techniques and recognizing the signs of food spoilage as a means to combat food spoilage effectively.

“Understanding expiration dates, practising good hygiene in the kitchen, and utilising appropriate preservation methods can significantly reduce food waste,” he said.

2,000 jobs can be created from vehicle assembling in a year – Trade Minister

The Minister of Trade and Industry, K.T. Hammond, has announced the government’s intention to generate 2,000 jobs within a year through vehicle assembly plants, as a result of deliberate policy interventions.

Currently, Ghana is home to six vehicle assembly plants that produce eleven different vehicle brands, including VolksWagen, Toyota, Suzuki, Nissan, KIA, and Hyundai.

Speaking at the inaugural Ghana Mutual Prosperity Dialogues, Mr. Hammond stated that the legislative instruments required for the complete implementation of the Automotive Policy will be finalized next year.

“So far, our estimates suggest that we can increase outputs from Vehicle Assembly Plants from 2,800 vehicles to around 7,500 by 2024, thereby giving us the critical mass to create at least 2,000 jobs within a year from vehicle assembly plants alone. Also, our legislative instruments for the full implementation of our Automotive Policy will be completed next year, ensuring that a framework for the development of Vehicle Assembly Plants and automotive components will guide our economic expansion going forward”.

He highlighted that Ghana has gained recognition as an emerging hub for vehicle assembly.

“It is profound to note that over a relatively short span of 3 years of a deliberate policy intervention to create a new automotive sector, Ghana is now recognised as an emerging hub for vehicle assembly”.

Mr. Hammond explained further the analytical assessment of where Ghana’s comparative advantages lie has led to a renewed policy focus on developing the textiles and garments, and pharmaceutical sectors, adding, “We expect to create about 30,000 jobs in garments manufacturing and exports by the end of 2024”.

On the One District One Policy initiative, the Minister of Trade and Industry pointed out that 169 factories were presently operational, and “we expect this number to increase next year”.

He further emphasized that globalization and integrated global value chains offer numerous opportunities. Therefore, by enhancing international market access, global trade policies play a crucial role in facilitating economic recovery. This includes stimulating job creation, supporting businesses of all sizes, and boosting domestic demand.

Additionally, the Trade Minister noted that implementing measures to reduce trade barriers and enhance market openness would promote innovation and attract investment into the economy.

“Ultimately, a more integrated global trade system would be instrumental in helping us navigate the chartered waters of international economic landscape as we embark on our economic transformation”, he stated.

Fire outbreak at Iranian drug rehab centre kills dozens

A fire that engulfed a drug rehabilitation center in northern Iran has resulted in the deaths of at least 32 individuals, according to authorities.

The blaze erupted early on Friday in Langarud, a city in the Caspian Sea province of Gilan, located north of Tehran. Esmail Sadeghi, a provincial chief justice, reported that an additional 16 individuals were transported to hospitals.

While Iran imposes the death penalty on repeat drug smugglers and dealers, it also runs several rehabilitation programs for addicts. The cause of the fire remains unclear, but an investigation is reportedly underway.

Iran has one of the world’s highest per-capita rates of opioid addiction and is situated on a major smuggling route for opium originating from Afghanistan.

According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, in 2020, Iran accounted for 47% of the global heroin and morphine seizures originating from Afghanistan.

In June, Amnesty International reported that Iran had executed at least 173 people convicted of drug-related offenses this year after “systematically unfair trials,” nearly three times more than the previous year.

Director of Navy Religious Affairs launches four books

On November 1, 2023, Commander David Benedict Quayson, the Director of Navy Religious Affairs, successfully launched four books at Burma Hall.

The books unveiled include “The Ghana Armed Forces Spousal Handbook,” “Marriage In God’s Way,” “Institutional Chaplaincy In Africa,” and “Skills Training Handbook.”

Representing the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, who served as the Guest of Honour, Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, the Chief of the Army Staff, stated that the book launch was well-timed as it addresses contemporary issues relevant to the Armed Forces and the lives of its personnel.

He noted that “Institutional Chaplaincy in Africa” delves deeply into the topic of military chaplaincy from an African perspective, contributing to the existing body of literature on chaplaincy and offering a fundamental understanding of military chaplaincy.

The event was chaired by Right Reverend Professor Joseph Manasseh Yaakwa Adusa Ayison, the Bishop of the Northern Accra Diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana.

Other notable figures in attendance included Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Ambassador Major General Francis Adu Amanfoh (Retired), Special Advisor to the President for the Accra Initiative, Major General Nicholas Peter Andoh, the Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters, retired Generals, Bishops of the Methodist Church Ghana, and senior officers from the Ghana Armed Forces.

  • Remove capping on GETFund allocation – Govt told

Various stakeholders in the education sector have called upon the government to eliminate the cap placed on allocations to the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).

Additionally, they advocated for a comprehensive review of the Fund, with a focus on specific areas of educational support, particularly infrastructure provision, instead of the current general support structure.

The plea was made during an open forum on higher education centered around the theme “Making the GETFund Fit for Purpose,” which was organized by the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS) as part of its project on “Motivating Higher Education Reforms in Ghana – Towards Equity and Sustainability.”

This forum provided a platform for open discussions regarding the financial challenges faced by the higher education sector.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies – Accra (UPSA), Professor Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey, highlighted the impact of the Earmarked Funds Capping and Realignment Act 2017, Act 947, on the resource allocation of the Fund.

“The current 2.5 per cent VAT allocated to the Fund should be reviewed upwards, given the increasing student enrolment numbers in public tertiary institutions as well as the number of projects undertaken across the various university campuses,” he added.

Professor Amartey emphasized the need for the GETFund to prioritize higher education institutions over the pre-tertiary sector, considering the current allocation of 12 percent to the latter as insufficient. He called for a collaborative effort involving multiple stakeholders to address financial challenges and identify sustainable sources of income to bolster the Fund.

Dennis Asare, a Senior Research Associate at the Imani Centre for Policy and Education, suggested that the GETFund should explore innovative methods of raising funds to support its activities.

“There is a need to improve their efficiency and encourage public-private partnerships to drive more support from the private sector,” he added.

The Ghana Education Trust Fund was created in 2000 through the Ghana Education Trust Fund Act, 2000, Act 581. Its primary purpose is to offer supplementary funding to enhance government budgetary allocations at all educational levels.

  • Apple’s revenue falls to $89.5bn in three months

Apple’s revenue falls to $89.5bn in three months

Apple has experienced a decline in sales, despite robust demand for its iPhones and services, including the streaming platform Apple TV+.

The technology company reported a 1% decrease in revenues, amounting to $89.5 billion (£73.3 billion), for the three months ending on September 30, in comparison to the corresponding period of the previous year.

Sales of its Mac computers and iPads faced challenges following a surge in interest post-lockdown. This marks the fourth consecutive quarter where Apple has observed a decline in year-on-year sales.

In an investor update, Apple announced a record-breaking profit of $23 billion, driven by a new high in iPhone sales during the three-month period. The company also reported substantial earnings from services such as iCloud and Apple Music, generating $22.3 billion, which represented a 16% increase compared to the previous year.

However, Apple expressed concerns about potential supply chain disruptions that could impact the delivery of its new iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max devices.

Apple chief executive Tim Cook said it was “working hard to manufacture more”.

“We do believe that later this quarter, we’ll reach a supply-demand balance,” he said.

Mr Cook said he felt the firm had its “strongest line-up of products ever” heading into the key Christmas trading period.

The most recent update indicates that certain Apple products have been struggling to maintain customer interest in recent times. For instance, sales of its Mac computers decreased to $7.6 billion for the quarter, down from $11.6 billion the previous year.

Apple unveiled its latest iPhone lineup in September during a highly anticipated event. During this event, it was announced that the iPhone 15 would no longer feature the company’s proprietary lightning charging port, a change that was enforced by the European Union. Instead, it now uses a USB-C cable, which is considered a “universally-accepted standard.”

Challenges have also arisen in other areas, including economic uncertainty affecting consumers in the Chinese market. Apple reported a 2.5% drop in sales in China, although CEO Tim Cook noted that, after accounting for foreign exchange rates, their business in China had grown year on year.

Cook made a surprise visit to China last month, where he met with gamers in Chengdu. This marked his second visit to China this year, which is a significant market for Apple. The company’s operations in China have been affected by COVID-19 restrictions and ongoing tensions between the US and China.

In March, Cook expressed that Apple had a “symbiotic” relationship with China, emphasizing its role as a key manufacturing base.

  • Enough of the political leaders, we need a transformational one – Alan

Enough of the political leaders, we need a transformational one – Alan

The Leader of the Movement for Change, John Alan Kyerematen, has emphasized the need for a transformational leader in Ghana rather than allegiance to a particular political party.

He believes it’s time for Ghanaians to shift their focus away from affiliations with the NPP and NDC and instead choose leaders with a clear vision and practical ideas to enhance the country and create a safer living environment.

Kyerematen’s decision to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 general elections is aimed at rallying people from diverse professional, educational, religious, ethnic, and other backgrounds who share the vision of transforming the country for the betterment of future generations.

Addressing the ‘first volunteer activation forum’ in Kumasi, he discussed his intention to create a platform for a power-sharing arrangement under a government of national unity through his leadership.

The ‘volunteer activation forum’ is designed to educate and train the youth on how to approach and attract new members to the Movement for Change and win their votes in the 2024 general elections.

Over four thousand youth volunteers in the Ashanti region attended the forum, demonstrating their commitment to supporting John Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change campaign. They pledged unwavering support for the new movement and Mr. Kyerematen’s transformational and unifying leadership agenda.

Kyerematen pointed to his track record, citing various contributions he has made to the country’s development. He highlighted his role as Trade Minister in President Kuffour’s government and how he transformed Ghana’s economy. He urged Ghanaian youth to have faith in him as the President for the next generation.

John Alan Kyerematen stressed the importance of inclusive decision-making in the country, asserting that ordinary citizens should be an integral part of this process. He expressed his commitment to ensuring that his government would facilitate all-inclusive decision-making that involves the general population.

He pointed out that the NPP and NDC have governed the country for the past thirty years, yet there hasn’t been significant improvement in the lives of the people. Kyerematen urged Ghanaians to carefully assess the current state of the country and consider new political leadership beyond party affiliations. He encouraged them to choose leaders capable of changing the country’s fortunes.

Kyerematen also mentioned that the ‘volunteer activation forum’ would be replicated in all 16 regions to assemble a group of young individuals who are concerned about the future of the country and are willing to work toward creating new leadership for the next generation.
