Mahama has not announced his running mate, no fake news will distract him – Clement Apaak

Member of Parliament representing Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, has firmly asserted that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) cannot sway the attention of former President John Mahama with fabricated news.

Addressing the circulation of false information related to the former President’s choice of a running mate, the Builsa South legislator emphasized that Mr. Mahama remains unwaveringly focused and cannot be diverted by any means.

“The outgoing corrupt, reckless, galamsey NPP has been exposed. John Mahama has made no comment anywhere about Prof or a running mate. JM will announce his running mate at the right time in consultation with NEC,” he said.

“Let the looting enterprise know that fake stories won’t divert our attention. We are focused on exposing their terrible deeds and despicable record,” Dr. Apaak reiterated.

In a prior statement, the Member of Parliament representing Builsa South had offered advice to activists within the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He suggested that their focus should be on exposing the actions and policies of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, rather than fixating on who might be selected as the running mate for former President John Mahama in the upcoming 2024 elections.

This counsel comes in response to various interest groups and individuals engaging in public discussions and campaigns regarding potential running mates for the former President in the 2024 presidential elections.

The Builsa South legislator firmly stated that any attempt to impose a candidate on the former President would ultimately prove futile.

“NDC activists should focus their energies at exposing the reckless, corrupt, galamsey Nana Addo/Bawumia NPP gov’t; taking up and leading efforts to make the case as to why our party is the only option; galvanize our base and help reconcile fallouts from constituency, regional, national and parliamentary primary elections.

“Any effort to push anyone, with the hope that that person will catch John Dramani Mahama’s eye to be made his running mate is an exercise in futility,” Dr. Apaak indicated in a statement copied to Starrfm.com.gh.

He continued: “JM is the most experienced politician in our party and in Ghana today. He is the only person to have been selected a running mate by a Flagbearer, who himself as a Flagbearer has selected a running mate.”

According to Dr. Apaak, the former President cannot be influenced in any way in the selection of his running mate ahead of the 2024 General Election.

“Consequently, he knows what he wants, and no one can cajole or influence him to select a running mate. He will announce his choice when the time is right, after consulting with NEC,” Dr. Apaak stated.

  • Brighton defeat is a warning to Newcastle, Howe admits

Brighton defeat is a warning to Newcastle, Howe admits

Eddie Howe concedes that Newcastle’s defeat at Brighton serves as a stark reminder that they cannot afford to let their Champions League campaign divert attention from the demanding Premier League.

The Magpies are making their return to the group stage of European football’s premier competition after a two-decade absence.

They have been drawn to face formidable opponents in AC Milan, Paris St Germain, and Borussia Dortmund.

However, the anticipation surrounding these upcoming clashes was quickly dampened by a string of three consecutive Premier League defeats, with 18-year-old Evan Ferguson’s hat-trick sealing a 3-1 victory for Brighton.

Manager Eddie Howe, whose team suffered a 2-1 home defeat against 10-man Liverpool the previous weekend and a 1-0 loss to Manchester City, acknowledges his responsibility for this recent downturn in form but emphasizes that he will approach the situation with measured perspective.

“It’s never been lost on me how difficult the Premier League is,” he said.

“I know how tough a league it is, it’s ruthless, so if you get your focus swayed, you’re going to have big problems – I don’t think our focus has been.

“We’ve tried to very much concentrate on our next match, that will always be our focus and we’re determined to be successful in the league this year and win as many games as possible.

“But we know the demands placed upon us are going to be extreme so this is a warning, I think, that we can’t be swayed and the Premier League is a very tough division.

“We’ve lost three in a row and we have to take responsibility for that. It’s important that I don’t over-react.”

Newcastle initially enjoyed the advantage in the early chances of the match on the south coast. However, they found themselves trailing after Evan Ferguson’s 27th-minute goal, a result of defensive lapses.

The Republic of Ireland striker then added to his tally with a remarkable long-range strike. He went on to achieve a rare feat by becoming only the fourth teenager in Premier League history to score a hat-trick, with one of his goals taking a deflection off Fabian Schar.

Manager Eddie Howe, who disclosed that midfielder Joe Willock would be sidelined for an additional six weeks due to a hamstring injury compounded by a fresh Achilles problem, is eager for a swift return to action as his team heads into a two-week international break.

“I’d like a game pretty quickly, if I could,” said Howe, whose team host Brentford on September 17.

“We have some great games to come and we’re looking forward to that challenge.

“I think the challenge to me is to lift everybody and keep our confidence levels because we are a very good team and we have to always have that in the back of our minds as we go into the next two weeks.

“The lads are very disappointed. Collectively we’ve got an outstanding group of individuals, great mentalities and we know what we’ve got to do.”

Ferguson’s first senior hat-trick, which was followed by Callum Wilson’s consolation, was the third in the Premier League on Saturday after trebles for Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Tottenham forward Son Heung-min.

“It’s a good day,” he told Brighton’s website. “It’s an unbelievable feeling.

“It’s not bad company to be in; Haaland’s record last season (52 City goals in all competitions) and Son’s been doing it for a number of years, so it’s good company to be in.”

Ahead of kick-off, the Seagulls paraded 20-year Spain forward Ansu Fati following his deadline-day loan switch from Barcelona.

“He’s going to be great for the squad, especially as competition,” said Ferguson.

“It’s tough up that area of the pitch and he’s going to be another one chucked in there and I reckon he’ll be very good for it.”

  • Unfreezing Cecilia Dapaah’s account shows fighting corruption in Ghana is a lonely endeavour – GII

Unfreezing Cecilia Dapaah’s account shows fighting corruption in Ghana is a lonely endeavour – GII

The Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) has conveyed her dissatisfaction with the court’s directive instructing the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to return confiscated funds to the embattled former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah.

Mary Addah expressed her view that these developments underscore the challenging nature of combating corruption in Ghana, often being a solitary endeavor.

She emphasized the importance of state institutions unequivocally supporting anti-corruption efforts in all circumstances. During an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, September 2, Addah articulated her belief that the court’s decision was not in the best interest of the country.

“This is one of the instances where it is difficult to comprehend what exactly is going on. The Office of the Special Prosecutor is one that will help this country if we want to fight corruption, and we continue to support them to carry out their investigations and prosecutions of corruption and corruption-related offenses, and what this judgement brings to bear is that fighting corruption continues to remain a very lonely endeavor,” she told host, Samson Lardy.

On Thursday, August 31, the Financial and Economic Division of an Accra High Court issued a directive instructing the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to return all funds that had previously been seized from the embattled former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah.

The Court further mandated that compliance with this ruling must be accomplished within a seven-day timeframe. Additionally, the Court clarified that it could not affirm the freezing of her bank accounts and other assets.

Subsequently, the OSP released a statement in response to the Court’s order, expressing its respect for the directive while simultaneously disagreeing with it, citing what it deemed as errors in the decision.

“While the OSP respects the Court’s decision, it disagrees with the decision of the Court. First, the OSP believes that the Court’s computation of the time limitation is, with respect, erroneous.”

“The OSP searched three (3) private residences associated with Ms. Dapaah over the course of two (2) weeks. The searches and discovery were ongoing during that period. There is little doubt that the OSP filed its application within the statutory window once the search and discovery window is considered.”

The OSP further clarified that its decision to freeze the accounts was not based on public sentiments as it is purported.

“The freezing order was not based on public sentiments. Rather, it was based on court processes filed in a criminal matter before the Circuit Court, Accra involving Ms. Dapaah as the complainant. Further, the freezing order was effected to aid the investigation, as required by law, not on the basis of the investigation, as indicated by the Court. Therefore, it cannot be said that the OSP did not carry out proper investigations to warrant the freezing order. The investigation has only commenced, and it is ongoing.”

The OSP is investigating Madam Dapaah for corruption and corruption-related offences following the revelation that she was keeping more than $1 million in her house.

Georginio Wijnaldum joins Al-Ettifaq FC from PSG

Dutch international Georginio Wijnaldum has completed a permanent transfer to Al-Ettifaq FC in Saudi Arabia.

Wijnaldum began his professional career with Feyenoord Rotterdam, where he played for five seasons. He then moved to PSV Eindhoven in 2011, remaining there until 2015.

Plot to oust IGP: Akufo-Addo urged to clear ‘mother serpent of corruption’ tag by sanctioning Bugri Naabu

Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Bismark Aborbi-Ayitey, has called upon President Nana Akufo Addo to respond to recent revelations involving Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Aborbi-Ayitey’s plea comes in the wake of a recent audio recording in which Bugri Naabu is heard in discussion with senior police officers about a plot to remove the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akufo-Dampare.

During a panel discussion on Peace FM on August 30, 2023, Aborbi-Ayitey pointed out specific comments made by Bugri Naabu during a parliamentary committee hearing.

He expressed his concerns about Bugri Naabu’s alleged reference to the President’s involvement in the matter. Aborbi-Ayitey emphasized the need for the President to address these allegations and hold Bugri Naabu accountable for making such claims.

Aborbi-Ayitey also highlighted the gravity of these allegations, drawing a parallel with former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu’s characterization of President Akufo Addo as the “mother serpent of all corruption.”

To safeguard the President’s reputation and credibility, Aborbi-Ayitey argued that decisive action against Bugri Naabu is imperative.

“This is the President who is on record according to Martin Amidu, saying he is the mother serpent of all corruption.

“He should punish Bugri Naabu for spreading lies about him. If he fails to take action, similar to his handling of the Nyantakyi case, we will have to accept the unfortunate reality that our President is corrupt.”

Construction works on Accra-Tema Motorway prompts traffic diversions

The Ministry of Roads and Highways, acting through the Department of Urban Roads, has issued an announcement regarding traffic diversions on the Accra-Tema Motorway.

These diversions are in place as a result of the ongoing construction of a bridge over the motorway, which will serve to connect Flowerpot to East Legon. This construction forms a crucial component of the Flowerpot Interchange project.

In light of these traffic diversions, motorists are strongly advised to exercise caution and adhere to the posted speed limits.

Additionally, they should follow the guidance provided by traffic management signs during this period.

“6 no. height restriction gantries (4.5 metres) will be positioned at different locations across the Accra Tema Motorway prior to reaching the construction zone. Vehicles exceeding 4.5 metres in height will be redirected to exit the stretch through the designated route”.

The Ministry has extended its apologies for any inconvenience that may arise during the construction process.

Over 80 NPP ‘friends’ in the Judiciary; there must be a balance – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has alleged that the government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has appointed individuals closely connected to the ruling party to serve in the judiciary.

Mahama asserted that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s appointments to the bench appear to be a deliberate effort to place judges who may be inclined to align with his interests once he is no longer in office.

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) suggested that this action by the president is intended to shield himself from accountability once his tenure concludes.

Addressing the closing ceremony of the 3rd Annual Lawyers Conference of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Saturday, September 2, Mr. Mahama alleged that, “Currently, the judiciary is packed with NPP-inclined judges because this government has carried out a deliberate policy of putting their people onto the bench.”

“He has appointed the biggest number of judges onto the bench, it is more than 80 towards 100 and counting. You can see what the current president has done. He has packed the court, and we know they have packed the court because they want to avoid accountability after they have left office.”

Mahama urged members of the NDC to consider pursuing careers within the judiciary as a means to bring greater balance to the institution.

“So, I encourage some of you to look at careers on the bench so that we can balance out what the current situation is. We must be prepared as NDC legal persons to also go onto the bench so that we can balance out the judiciary,” he urged.

  • Soybeans emerge as a promising cash crop to bolster Ghana’s economic growth

Soybeans emerge as a promising cash crop to bolster Ghana’s economic growth

Soybeans have emerged as a promising cash crop with the potential to rejuvenate and invigorate Ghana’s economy, possibly even surpassing cocoa as a leading source of revenue.

This revelation came to light during a consultative meeting held in Accra by the Soya Value Chain Association of Ghana. The association underscored the progressive growth of soya as a lucrative cash crop within the agricultural sector.

The meeting, convened at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research’s headquarters, emphasized the importance of collaborating with government agencies, development partners, farmers, and other stakeholders. This initiative aimed to develop a national strategy plan to promote the expansion and advancement of Ghana’s soybean industry.

In partnership with GIZ under the Sustainable Employment Agribusiness Programme (AgriBiz), the event centered around the theme: “A National Soya Strategy Plan for Ghana’s Economy: Influencing Policy for a Soya-Business Agenda.”

Mr. Yaw Afrifa, Executive Secretary of the association, explained that the purpose of the meeting was to collectively identify key areas for improvement and formulate an inclusive national strategy to address the challenges faced by the soya sector.

This strategic approach aims to boost soya productivity, increase profitability, generate substantial revenue, contribute positively to Ghana’s overall economic growth, and ensure food security.

“If the country looks at soya as a cash crop, it could generate income up to the level of cocoa or even more,” he said. “And so, this is a very great potential revenue earner for the country,” he said.

“We’re here to look at a national strategy plan for soya; this is because everybody is trying to do something here, something there, and we are not getting the impact.”

“If Ghana considered soya a lucrative agricultural product, he said, it had the potential to generate income comparable to, or even surpassing, that of cocoa.”

He urged policymakers to seize this significant opportunity to generate substantial revenue and harness the numerous benefits presented by the growing global demand for soy.

Furthermore, he called upon both the government and farmers to recognize the immense potential of cultivating soybeans as a means to diversify Ghana’s economy and boost export earnings.

Mr. Thomas W. Bello, Chairman of the Soya Value Chain Association of Ghana, emphasized the crucial need for a comprehensive national strategy plan to chart a clear course for the long-term growth of Ghana’s soy industry.

He noted that the association had organized a consultative meeting last year with the theme “Laying the Foundations for Sustainability After 2024” to streamline the soya sub-sector.

Mr. Bello explained that the primary objective was to gather input and insights regarding the proposed ban on soybean exports from Ghana. A position paper was developed during a soybean roundtable in 2022, which called upon the government to establish a national strategy plan and reconsider the composition of the export control committee, among other recommendations.

Subsequently, the association petitioned parliament, urging a review of the legislation governing the selection process for members of the export control committee.

However, Dominic Ayine, Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central and chairman of the subsidiary legislation committee of parliament, advised that the process should commence with the Ministry of Trade and Industry, which holds jurisdiction over this matter.

The consultative meeting underscored the importance of establishing formal collaborations with stakeholder organizations such as the Alliance for the Green Revolution in Africa, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, and the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

The Black Stars Vice Captain, Thomas Partey, will miss out on Chris Hughton’s 25-man squad for the upcoming final AFCON Qualifier against the Central African Republic on September 7 due to injury.

Similarly, Southampton forward Kamaldeen Sulemana will also not be included in Hughton’s selection for this crucial AFCON Qualifier.

However, there is positive news as PAOK defender Baba Rahman, Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Richard Ofori, and Auxerre midfielder Elisha Owusu have all made their way back into the squad after recovering from their respective injuries.

One notable inclusion is Medeama SC striker Jonathan Sowah, who is set to make his national team debut. Sowah, who joined Medeama during the second transfer window, made an impressive contribution with 12 goals that helped secure their League title victory.

In other developments, Black Stars Captain Andre Ayew, who is currently without a club, retains his place in the squad, as does his brother, Jordan Ayew.

The much-anticipated match between Ghana and the Central African Republic is scheduled to be held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday, September 7.

Additionally, the Black Stars will host Liberia in an International Friendly at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, with the game set to kick off at 3 pm Ghana time.

Cecilia Dapaah: Take less interest in the media and focus on your job – Richard Ahiagbah tells OSP

Communications Director of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has expressed criticism of the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s handling of a suspected corruption case involving former Sanitation and Water Resources Minister, Cecilia Dapaah.

Ahiagbah has raised concerns that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) appears to be prioritizing media attention over the essential task of thoroughly investigating the case to gather the requisite evidence for potential charges.

During an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, September 2, the NPP’s Communications Director openly called out the Special Prosecutor. He advised the Special Prosecutor to concentrate on carrying out his responsibilities diligently and refrain from needlessly tarnishing individuals’ reputations.

“I think the Special Prosecutor has been very untidy with this whole case and getting its lungs filled with the oxygen of public interest in the matter and it’s affecting how it should approach this matter. “

“He should take less interest in the media and focus on his job.”

During the same broadcast, Mahama Ayariga, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament representing Bawku Central, also criticized the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), accusing it of negligence in its handling of the case.

Ayariga pointed out that the OSP had not fully adhered to its statutory obligations, particularly in terms of seeking court confirmation for the seizure and freezing of the former Minister’s accounts.

“The law says apply for confirmation of the seizure within seven days and I am saying that the Special Prosecutor did not do that. He didn’t do that.”

“He has been negligent, and he is trying to throw dust into our eyes by issuing this long convoluted statement. The courts are there for everybody so let’s not blame the court.”

Djokovic maintains bid for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title

Novak Djokovic, in his pursuit of a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title, faced a challenging match against fellow Serb Laslo Djere. Djokovic found himself trailing by two sets, losing 4-6 4-6.

However, he mounted a remarkable comeback, breaking Djere’s serve in the first game of the third set, which served as a turning point. Djokovic went on to win the match with scores of 6-1 6-1 6-3, advancing to the fourth round.

This marked the eighth time in his career that Djokovic had successfully recovered from a two-set deficit. Djokovic aims to match Australian Margaret Court’s record of major wins.

He took a break after losing the second set and after his victory, said: “I did a pep talk in the mirror. It worked.

“I laughed at myself because I was so agitated and annoyed with the game. I had to force myself to lift my spirits.”

In the next round of the US Open, Novak Djokovic is set to face Croatian qualifier Borna Gojo, who is currently ranked 105th in the world.

On another note, Czech qualifier Jakub Mensik had a disappointing 18th birthday at the US Open as he faced a crushing defeat by Taylor Fritz.

Fritz, the ninth seed and a hopeful American contender, proved to be a formidable opponent, allowing Mensik to win just three games in a dominant 6-1 6-2 6-0 victory.

“I felt good. I kind of had a clear plan of what I wanted to do, how I wanted to play him,” said Fritz, 25.

“I returned well. I was moving really well. Yep, I just played a solid match.”

Incredibly, Fritz has dropped just 13 games in his three matches in New York so far. He will face 21-year-old Swiss sensation Dominic Stricker in round four.

“When any of us see the others having good results, it’s motivating,” added Fritz. “I think they’d all say the same thing.

“But it’s motivating. Because if one of us does something, the others not only want to do it too, they now believe that they can also do it because we think we’re as good as each other. If he did this here, then why can’t I?”

He continued: “I think it’s kind of this progression that we’ve had for a while now, why we’re at where we’re at.

“Someone achieves something big, then someone else comes and wants to match him or one-up him, and it’s the cycle that keeps going.

“We’re all such good friends, it’s motivating, for sure.”

You have been negligent in tackling cash case involving Cecilia Dapaah – Mahama Ayariga to OSP

The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central has criticized the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for not fully adhering to its Act when seeking court confirmation for the seizure and freezing of former Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation, Cecilia Dapaah’s accounts.

Mahama Ayariga accused the OSP of negligence in fulfilling its responsibilities and calls for accountability. During an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile program on Saturday, September 2, Mr. Ayariga emphasized the importance of the OSP following the law, stating that the courts are accessible to everyone, not just the OSP.

“The law says apply for confirmation of the seizure within seven days and I am saying that the Special Prosecutor did not do that. He didn’t do that.”

“He has been negligent and he is trying to throw dust into our eyes by issuing this long convoluted statement. The courts are there for everybody so let’s not blame the court.”

Following the Financial and Economic Division of an Accra High Court’s ruling on Thursday, August 31, ordering the Office of the Special Prosecutor to return all funds seized from former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah, the OSP issued a statement expressing respect for the directive while disagreeing with it, deeming it erroneous.

The Court ordered compliance with the ruling within seven days and stated that it cannot confirm the freezing of her bank accounts and other assets.

“While the OSP respects the Court’s decision, it disagrees with the decision of the Court. First, the OSP believes that the Court’s computation of the time limitation is, with respect, erroneous.”

  • Chelsea’s £1bn spending should come as no surprise, Pochettino claims

Chelsea’s £1bn spending should come as no surprise, Pochettino claims

Mauricio Pochettino has called for fairness and consistency in the assessment of Chelsea’s spending, which has exceeded £1 billion under the ownership of Todd Boehly.

The recent £40 million signing of Cole Palmer from Manchester City has pushed Chelsea’s total spending in the last 16 months into the 10-figure range. During the summer window alone, over £400 million was spent on 12 players.

To balance these expenditures, Chelsea has also seen significant player sales earlier in the window, including the departures of midfielders Kai Havertz and Mason Mount for a combined £120 million.

Pochettino’s remarks highlight the need for impartiality and non-hypocrisy when evaluating clubs’ financial activities in football.

On Friday, Chelsea confirmed two key loan moves as part of their squad management strategy. 20-year-old striker Mason Burstow has embarked on a season-long loan to Sunderland, while Callum Hudson-Odoi, who had been associated with the club for 16 years, has made a transfer to Nottingham Forest.

Chelsea is gearing up to host Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, aiming to secure a third consecutive victory following their recent wins against Luton in the Premier League and AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear that, given the substantial financial investments made by the club’s owners, failing to secure Champions League qualification in his debut season would be considered a disappointment. Pochettino also highlighted his responsibility to provide guidance and advice to owner Todd Boehly, who is relatively new to European football.

This demonstrates the club’s commitment to achieving success and stability in both domestic and European competitions.

“You can talk about being very surprised about (the billion-pound landmark), or not,” said Pochettino. “It depends. Today football is… we need to evolve. Today it’s different. Completely different. We manage a different type of numbers.

“If 20 years ago we had thought this was going to happen, maybe no one would believe it. But today, it’s normal in football, this type of money moving around.

“It’s a big business, football. And we cannot stop. I think we all get the benefit here, no? I think we cannot be hypocrites. To be involved in football in different areas, you (the press) there or me here. We are living all (what) that business produces.

“I’m not going to be here to give lessons to anyone, but I think football is about getting a good balance. For me, yes Chelsea is spending money. But also it’s selling players. Money in and money out.

“In that case, people arrive in a club in the Premier League like our owners, it’s normal. They want to settle and develop their project, and we are people that are going to help them to be right in their decisions, because we are professionals of football.

“We are giving our vision and advice, and of course after (that) it’s up to them. That is a very special situation that happened from the beginning.”

Pochettino will have Mykhailo Mudryk available for selection after the winger missed last weekend’s 3-0 victory over Luton.

The Ukraine international, who signed for £88m from Shakhtar Donetsk in January but is yet to score or consistently show the kind of form that persuaded Chelsea to bring him to west London, has played just 54 minutes this season and is yet to start a game under Pochettino.

“He’s a very talented player,” said the manager. “He needs to first of all, before talking about football, he needs to feel comfortable, feel really strong in his body. He suffered (during) the (under-21) Euros, he only played one game (because) he was suffering from some injury.

“When I arrived here was never consistent in training, always something happened. Now we are focused and trying to help me to be really strong, healthy and feel good to start to perform.

“No one can perform if they do not feel strong and really confident in your body. It’s time we need to build his confidence. We are working. I hope in the next few weeks he starts to find his best form to start to help the team.”

NPP can break the 8 with Bawumia – Yendi MP

Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Yendi Constituency, Farouk Aliu Mahama, has asserted that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia possesses a competitive advantage that could potentially help the New Patriotic Party (NPP) secure victory in the 2024 elections.

In an interview on Citi FM on Friday, Farouk Aliu Mahama explained that since the Vice President Dr Bawumia has travelled the length and breadth of the country, he is abreast of the challenges facing Ghanaians and how to have them resolved.

He said: “Bawumia is somebody who is very competent, someone who has gone through the country, who understands every problem in the country, understands the constituents, understands wherever we are coming from. And he is somebody who has that competitive advantage to rally all of us to lead us break the eight. And that is how come I have chosen Dr Bawumia.”

“I am not looking at his religion or where he comes from. It also matters because it wipes off that perception that former President John Mahama keeps saying that Northerners are people that have been sidelined,” he stated.

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu, has made a prediction that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will emerge as the winner in the NPP’s presidential primaries, which are scheduled for November 4.

Osei Owusu anticipates that Dr. Bawumia will secure over 68% of the votes from the Super Delegates’ Conference, following his impressive victory with 68.15% of the vote in a Special Delegates’ Conference held on August 26.

Other contenders, including Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong and former Trades Minister Alan Kyerematen, received 14.30% and 10.29% of the votes, respectively, placing second and third.

Speaking to Citi News on the sidelines of the launch of Professor Kwesi Yankah’s book titled, “The Pen At Risk, Spilling My Little Beans”, the Bekwai MP stressed the Vice President’s imminent victory.

He added that Dr Bawumia is the most popular candidate that Ghanaians yearn for to lead the country.

NDC MPs will demand IGP’s removal after addressing BoG Governor – Mahama Ayariga

The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has criticized the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, asserting that he has constitutional responsibilities to fulfill when citizens are required to protest, regardless of the situation.

Mr Ayariga emphasized that the IGP holds a position of authority and responsibility because citizens entrust him with the task of maintaining peace and order in the country, including ensuring the safety and security of the public during various events, including peaceful demonstrations.

He stressed that the IGP must do everything possible to facilitate citizens’ exercise of their freedom to protest, and he pointed out that the IGP is paid and provided with the necessary resources to function effectively, so he cannot refuse to work if those resources are available.

“The IGP is not there on his own. He should take off his uniform and check to see if he is the IGP. He has constitutional obligations to live up to expectations when citizens must demonstrate, no matter how difficult the task. Even if it is difficult, the IGP must assure the demonstrators’ safety, security, and protection,” Mahama Ayariga said.

His comments come at a time when the Minority in Parliament is having an impasse with the Police over the approved route for its demonstration to demand the removal of the BoG Governor, Dr Ernest Addison.

Mr Ayariga expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance of key government officials, particularly the IGP, and emphasized the importance of holding public servants accountable for their constitutional duties and responsibilities.

He noted that when citizens want to exercise their right to protest, it is the IGP’s responsibility to provide them with the necessary protection and security to ensure that the protests remain peaceful and that individuals or groups attempting to disrupt the peace are prevented from doing so.

He warned that the IGP could be the next public officer to be removed from office due to his behavior.

“We cannot offer you the resources, budget, recruit for you, or equip you with logistics such as vehicles, and you claim you are unable to accomplish your job. After the governor of the Bank of Ghana, we will demand the expulsion of the IGP,” he added.

  • We are ready for Arsenal – Ten Hag

We are ready for Arsenal – Ten Hag

Erik ten Hag is confident that his players are prepared for the upcoming battle against Arsenal, and Manchester United is eagerly anticipating Sunday’s highly-anticipated showdown.

While Manchester United has accumulated six points from their initial three Premier League matches, their performances have been less than stellar.

They narrowly defeated Wolves 1-0 in their Old Trafford opener and suffered a 2-0 loss to Tottenham.

In their most recent outing at Old Trafford, they had to come from behind to secure a 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest.

As last season’s Premier League runners-up, United understands that they must elevate their performance at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday when they face Arsenal, who finished third in the league last year.

“It’s one of the biggest games in the Premier League and we are really looking forward, of course, to that fight,” the United boss said. “It’s really always interesting games, intense games.

“I think it is two teams who really play offensive football, the right intentions, I would say.

“The audience is always the big winner of that game, so really looking forward to have that game.”

Manchester United is heading to the capital with three new signings who are now eligible to play.

Altay Bayindir, a goalkeeper from Fenerbahce, joined the team on Friday after Dean Henderson’s departure to Crystal Palace. Tottenham’s left-back Sergio Reguilon also arrived on a season-long loan, and the return of Jonny Evans to the club on a one-year contract was recently announced.

All three players were registered in time to be available for the match against Arsenal. However, Sofyan Amrabat, who arrived on loan from Fiorentina with an obligation to buy, was not eligible to play.

The deadline day signings have strengthened a squad that will be competing on multiple fronts this season. Manchester United was recently drawn into a Champions League group that includes Bayern Munich, FC Copenhagen, and Galatasaray.

“We need the depth to go into the four competitions,” Ten Hag said.

“But also our players, most of them international players for their nations, so they will go all over the world.

“We have to cover that. We have to be prepared for that situation, that we always can put a competitive team on the pitch.”

Mason Mount, Luke Shaw, Raphael Varane, and Tyrell Malacia are still unavailable for the upcoming match against Arsenal.

In addition to these players, Amad Diallo, Kobbie Mainoo, and Tom Heaton are also sidelined due to injuries. However, the new summer signing, Rasmus Hojlund, has been cleared to make his debut after recovering from a back problem.

“I think for every player there is a big spotlight. At United you have to perform, so in every position and with every player.”

  • There is hope that NAM 1’s fraud case will be pursued by AG – Legal counsel for Menzgold customers

There is hope that NAM 1’s fraud case will be pursued by AG – Legal counsel for Menzgold customers

The Head of Chambers at The Law Office of Clinton Consultancy, Amanda Akuokor Clinton, has expressed her confidence in the Attorney General’s ability to pursue the newly filed charges against the Chief Executive of the now-defunct gold dealership firm Menzgold, Nana Appiah Mensah.

The Attorney General has levied 36 charges against Nana Appiah Mensah, also known as NAM 1, which include abetment, defrauding by false pretences, operating a deposit-taking business without a license, engaging in unlawful deposit-taking, money laundering, and others.

This represents a reduction from the initial 61 charges that were filed against him.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, September 2, the lawyer said “there is a lot of hope, I think we have a relatively new AG who is trying to distinguish himself from other AGs.

“So, hopefully that will push him to make a mark, and one of the ways is through a high profile case such as this.”

Amanda Akuokor Clinton acknowledged that the Attorney General’s filing of new charges against Nana Appiah Mensah (NAM 1) came somewhat belatedly, considering the three-year duration of the case. However, she praised the Attorney General for elevating the case from the Circuit Court to the High Court.

She expressed her belief that the reduction in the number of charges to 36 is indicative of the Attorney General’s genuine intent to pursue the case.

“I do commend the Attorney General’s Department for at least saying they were very much investigating the matter,” she added.

She emphasized that in the money laundering case, the Attorney General can take further steps as it suggests that Nana Appiah Mensah (NAM 1) was involved in the process of legitimizing ill-gotten funds through his business.

Furthermore, she urged the Attorney General to collaborate with countries that NAM 1 frequently visited to trace and recover assets he may have in those nations. This action is aimed at facilitating the restitution of some of the money to the aggrieved customers.

The Attorney General initiated the prosecution of NAM 1 in 2019, accusing him of defrauding numerous customers through his gold dealership firm, resulting in losses amounting to millions of cedis.

The case has experienced several adjournments, and new charges were filed on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.

The decision to file new charges followed Mr. Appiah Mensah’s announcement of plans to release locked-up funds to Menzgold customers upon a payment of approximately GH₵650 for verification.

Subsequently, he reversed this decision, eliminating the requirement for former clients to purchase a verification Access Card following significant public and customer backlash.

“Menzgold would cease the production and printing of the PVC Digital Access Cards, which imposes a cost burden,” the defunct company said in a communique.

The company said it is resorting to “the printing of the PIN Codes only, for onward distribution at no cost subject to the following conditions, that; Clients with INVALID status may choose to either walk away or still in the face of the one or several of the 10 invalidity status reasons provided, adamantly proceed to seek redress or review of the invalidity determination, which shall come at a fee to avoid the abuse of our time, human and logistics resources.”

  • Price of pork increases to GHS30 in Ashanti Region

Price of pork increases to GHS30 in Ashanti Region

The price of pork meat per kilogram has been increased to GH¢30, effective Friday, September 1. This adjustment comes after the previous price was GH¢26 per kilogram.

The Ashanti Regional Organiser of the Pig Farmers and Producers Association, Augustine Naah, cited the rising production costs as the reason for this necessary price adjustment.

In an interview with Akoma FM‘s Antwi Boasiako, he said that “soya beans, maize, drugs, transport, and labour costs among others, have all gone up.”

Mr. Naah emphasized that it has become essential for them to align prices with the increasing cost of production in order to sustain their business operations.

He appealed to consumers of the product to understand the situation and support them so that they can continue to operate successfully in the industry.

  • Changing route for BoG demo will not hurt the morale – Richard Ahiagbah

Changing route for BoG demo will not hurt the morale – Richard Ahiagbah

Communications Director of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has stated that the Ghana Police Service’s decision to modify the routes for the Minority’s #OccupyBoG protest does not undermine the core purpose of the demonstration.

Mr. Ahiagbah believes that the police’s decision is reasonable as it will help safeguard the Bank of Ghana and other state institutions from potential incidents.

During an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, September 2, Mr. Ahiagbah urged the public to discuss the matter objectively.

However, he also called on the police to maintain consistency and apply the same principles to future demonstrations.

“I think this conversation must be looked at dispassionately because I think the essential spirit of the demonstration is not hurt by the police asking them to change portions of their routes.”

“Now the decision of the demonstrators to say they want to go here or there and the position of the police saying that it might be a security zone and the Bank of Ghana headquarters is already a crowded place, we are beginning to see an instance that the police is trying to manage the crowd situation and to prevent unforeseen incidents from happening.”

The NDC MPs are planning to march on Tuesday, September 5, starting from Makola and proceeding through Rawlings Park and Opera Square, ultimately arriving at the frontage of the Bank of Ghana. The purpose of this march is to demand the resignation of the Bank of Ghana Governor and his two deputies in response to the central bank’s over GH¢60.8 billion losses recorded in 2022.

However, the police argue that the selected route often experiences heavy congestion from both pedestrian and vehicular traffic, potentially jeopardizing public order, public safety, and essential services.

The police had proposed an alternative route, starting from Parliament House and leading through the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light, concluding at Independence Square. This proposal was rejected by the minority.

The police have filed an injunction to prevent the Minority from using their preferred route, and this case will be heard on September 4.

Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has criticized the police’s actions, labeling them as a “breach of trust” and expressing profound disappointment in their conduct.

“We received a letter on Wednesday from the Ghana Police Service accompanied by a bailiff from the Accra High Court who served a notice or motion for an order to prohibit our Bank of Ghana protest, and we must say that we are very disappointed with this development which is an attempt to scatter the protest which is intended to hold the Governor and his deputies accountable for their mismanagement of the bank which resulted in an unprecedented and colossal loss of GH¢60.8 billion, an amount which has had serious consequences on the economy and pushed close to one million Ghanaians into poverty.”

“And let us assure the people of Ghana that, as representatives, we will keep our sacred duty and we will uphold the public interest in line with our constitutionally guaranteed right to publicly protest, and we want to assure the people of Ghana that we have resolved to embark on this protest and nothing will stop us.”

  • Alan Kyerematen was not betrayed – Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

Alan Kyerematen was not betrayed – Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

The Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has strongly condemned certain statements and tribal prejudices expressed by supporters of former Trade Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen.

These followers of Mr. Kyerematen alleged that delegates in the Ashanti Region had betrayed a candidate from their own region by casting their votes in favor of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking on GhanAkoma morning show with Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin on Akoma FM in Kumasi, the Member of Parliament for Suame said, “Alan is not the only Asante man who contested and people should stop accusing delegates in the Region of betraying Alan Kyerematen in the just ended national special delegates congress.”

According to him, such statements do not contribute positively to the party’s unity. He emphasized that regardless of which presidential hopeful emerges as the winner, they will require the support of other candidates to secure victory in the 2024 general elections.

He highlighted that individuals such as Dr. Kofi Konadu, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Francis Addai-Nimoh, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and others all hail from the Ashanti Region, and therefore, singling out one individual is not warranted.

He stressed that a candidate’s supporters alone cannot guarantee the party’s success in the 2024 general elections. He emphasized that all aspirants and their supporters will be crucial in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.

Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu expressed his belief that the former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen, is a dedicated party member and should not be ruled out ahead of the race in November.

He dismissed media reports suggesting that NPP delegates in the Ashanti Region betrayed Alan Kyerematen during the recently concluded super delegates’ conference. He noted that Ashanti Region delegates tend to support worthy causes, and their voting behavior reflects this approach.

“They don’t discriminate. They are loyal people and look at things objectively without consideration to the tribal lines.”

  • A fair election is hinged on an effective IPAC – Afari Gyan

A fair election is hinged on an effective IPAC – Afari Gyan

Former Chairman of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan, has emphasized the significance of the Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) in bolstering political parties’ involvement in electoral processes, thereby ensuring fair and credible elections in the country.

In 2021, the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), completely withdrew from IPAC. This decision followed a series of boycotts leading up to the 2020 general election, with the NDC accusing the Jean Mensah-led Electoral Commission of displaying bias and disregarding their suggestions and inputs during IPAC meetings.

With the apparent breakdown of IPAC, in 2019, the Electoral Commission launched a 21-member Eminent Advisory Committee (EAC) aimed at improving engagement and interactions between the commission and the public in the lead-up to the 2020 elections.

Speaking on the topic of “Free and Fair Elections” at the 3rd Annual Lawyers Conference of the NDC Lawyers Association in Akosombo, located in the Eastern Region, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan asserted that IPAC is the foremost forum for ensuring the active participation of political parties in electoral processes and decision-making, which in turn enhances the prospects of free and fair elections.

As the country gears up for another critical election, Dr. Afari Gyan, who served as the longest-serving former chairman of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, recommended that IPAC be revitalized and made effective once again.

“Under Ghana’s Electoral system, there are many opportunities for political parties to participate in Electoral processes in was that promotes free and fair election. Of singular importance is the inter party advisory committee (IPAC).The IPAC makes is possible for political parties to know and make inputs to the important thing the electoral commission is doing at any point in time”.

Dr. Afari Gyan added “It makes it possible to discuss concerns of the parties and makes it possible to contribute to the making of subsidiary legislation. Indeed in some, the IPAC is the forum for stakeholder dialogue towards achieving common ownership of the electoral system”.

He also called on the government to provide the necessary financial resources to the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure that the commission doesn’t resort to shortcuts in any of its electoral activities.

However, former Director of Elections, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, believes that Electoral Commissioner Jean Mensah maintains a biased stance, evident in the decision to proceed with a limited registration process at the district level instead of electoral areas. This decision, he argues, could potentially disenfranchise many eligible voters.

He urged concerned and responsible Ghanaians to voice their concerns regarding the EC’s actions to prevent potential consequences, especially at a time when the geopolitical environment in West Africa is becoming increasingly vulnerable to political instability.

“On countless occasions we made what we considered to be valuable inputs. Sometimes supported by the other side. I can cite so many cases for example the last registration exercise before 2020 election. We are going into an election can we consider to go back only for the EC to display such behavior to other minority parties. The very reasons we left they have been fed with same medicine”.

He said the NDC is not the problem in the impasse, but the EC.

“The problem is not us. The problem is the attitude, stance and Posturing of the Electoral Commission. Why do we go to IPAC? We go to IPAC so that we can make inputs. It doesn’t mean that whatever we say should be taken hook line and sinker. There is history of IPAC, suggestions are made, it  is shaped it is agreed and disagreed but we reach consensus this has been the tradition since 1993. What is it about this current EC that they will not take any input irrespective of how sanguine it is,“ Elvis Afriyie Ankrah  lamented.

‘People call in the middle of the night, it is crazy’ – Former French Ambassador recounts ‘harassing’ situation over visas

Former French Ambassador to Ghana, Anne Sophie Ave, has revealed the awkward situations she has been subjected to by Ghanaians keenly in search of visas.

According to her, some Ghanaians have taken to contacting her in the middle of the night to request visas. She mentioned that individuals have been reaching out to her both during the day and late at night via WhatsApp.

In a discussion with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM on August 31, Anne Sophie Ave expressed her astonishment, as she had no knowledge of how some Ghanaians obtained her contact information. She also conveyed her discomfort with the situation, finding it embarrassing to receive such requests.

Anne Sophie Ave emphasized that she had already communicated to Ghanaians that she is not responsible for issuing visas, yet she continues to receive late-night calls from individuals seeking assistance with visa matters.

“People come to me night and day and even on my phone as well. I don’t know how they managed to get my WhatsApp and they call me in the middle of the night and I’m like oh, it’s crazy.”

The former French Ambassador added that she is also not worried that much because she understands the ‘frustrations’ of these people knowing how things work.

She said “But I understand where they come from. You need to travel, you have an appointment, a concert, a business meeting and then you apply for a visa and then there’s no appointment, no slot.”

She further explained that there are many reasons why there are usually no slots when you apply for a visa with Andy Dosty “The number of requests (for visas) has increased remarkably so the size of the desk that is providing and studying the application is not enough because the number increased from 4000 a year to 7000 and to 10,000 with the same number of people; so that’s one thing,” she disclosed.

Educated people must help the average citizen take charge – William Atuguba

Former Supreme Court Justice William Atuguba has strongly criticized politicians, emphasizing that they are central to the problems that persist in the country.

He has urged educated citizens to take a stand and work towards establishing institutions that promote development and safeguard the rights and interests of the average Ghanaian.

In an interview with TV3 on September 1, 2023, he lashed out at politicians who continued to profiteer off the ordinary Ghanaian: “Are they technocrats…But they would use politics to poison the system.

“The power belongs to the people, the educated people must help the people to take charge of the country which belongs to them ad benefit from it by putting in place, real and practical institutions that will bring them benefit in their daily lives.”

He cautioned that contemporary democracy seems to have evolved into a means for some individuals to gain profit at the expense of others.

He charged politicians to “not be playing tricks with a system I will call democratic and it is an instrument for defrauding the people, impoverishing them and deepening the poison of partisan politics, further and further and further.

“Our lives now is just you situate yourself politically and get what you can get from it. That is becoming our drive of life in this country,” a visibly disturbed Atuguba added.

  • Andy Murray loses to Grigor Dimitrov in New York at US Open 2023

Andy Murray loses to Grigor Dimitrov in New York at US Open 2023

Andy Murray has acknowledged that he may have to come to terms with the possibility that a coveted deep run at a Grand Slam might never materialize, following his recent exit in the US Open second round.

The 36-year-old former world number one suffered a 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 defeat against 19th seed Grigor Dimitrov in New York.

Murray, currently ranked 37th, has not advanced to the last 16 of a major tournament since making his comeback after undergoing hip surgery in 2019.

“It’s unbelievably challenging to play at the highest level,” he said.

“It’s obviously disappointing to not play how you would like.

“Maybe I need to accept the deep runs and everything that I felt I’m capable of, they might not be there.”

This season, Andy Murray had set his sights on a significant achievement in his tennis career, aiming to put together a noteworthy run at a major tournament. As a three-time Grand Slam champion, Murray is well aware that he is in the twilight of his career.

His journey in the Grand Slam events this year saw him reach the third round of the Australian Open in January. After opting to skip the French Open, he faced a setback by exiting in the second round at Wimbledon last month.

Despite these challenges at the major tournaments, Murray’s determination has remained unwavering. Notably, he has made progress in his rankings, recently reaching his highest ranking since his comeback four years ago.

“I still enjoy everything that goes into it. I enjoy the work, the training and trying to improve and trying to get better,” said Murray, who reached the Doha final in February and has won three titles on the second-tier ATP Challenger Tour this year.

    “That’s what keeps me going.

“If I stop enjoying that – or my results, my ranking and everything starts to go backwards, if in a few months’ time I was ranked 60 in the world or whatever instead of moving up – things might change.”

On paper, securing a seeding going into the four Grand Slam events would have appeared to improve Andy Murray’s prospects of making deeper runs in these prestigious tournaments.

Unfortunately, Murray’s ambitions were recently hampered by his withdrawal from the tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati this month due to an abdominal injury. This setback resulted in his narrowly missing out on a top 32 seeding going into the US Open, which didn’t work in his favor in New York.

Following his recovery from the injury, Murray displayed a commendable performance in his opening-round victory over France’s Corentin Moutet. However, his level of play noticeably declined when he faced the experienced Grigor Dimitrov.

“If I want to have deep runs in these tournaments, I’m going to have to come up against players like Grigor,” said Murray, who lost to fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Wimbledon second round.

“Whether I was seeded or not here in the top 32, I don’t think that guarantees I’m going to have a deep run either.”

Grigor Dimitrov, a former world number three and coached by Dani Vallverdu, who previously worked with Murray, deserves significant credit for successfully executing a well-thought-out gameplan aimed at frustrating the British player.

Dimitrov’s effective use of the backhand slice consistently disrupted the pace of the rallies, compelling Murray into lengthy baseline exchanges and physically demanding duels. Murray found himself on the back foot, being broken in the first service game of each set, and struggled to convert just two of the nine break points he created.

For Murray’s supporters in Arthur Ashe Stadium, the match became increasingly challenging to watch. Murray, a beloved figure at the venue where he secured the first of his three major titles, faced a daunting deficit in the third set. He conveyed to his team that he was conceding, and his difficulties were epitomized by a double fault on Dimitrov’s third match point.

Dimitrov, a 32-year-old who reached the US Open semi-finals in 2019, will advance to the last 32 to face German 12th seed Alexander Zverev.

Meanwhile, Murray expressed his intention to return to the UK as soon as possible and indicated that he might not participate for Great Britain in the upcoming Davis Cup tie in Manchester next month.

“If I’m being honest, the other guys deserve to play ahead of me,” said Murray, who suggested Jack Draper should play instead.

“I think there is probably a chance that I’m not on the team. I’ll try to get home this evening or tomorrow morning, then see where I go from there.”

  • Scrap collector given 6-month jail term for stealing air conditioner

Scrap collector given 6-month jail term for stealing air conditioner

A 28-year-old scrap collector named Akwasi Boateng has been sentenced to six months of hard labor by a Circuit Court in Dormaa-Ahenkro.

He faced charges of unlawful entry, causing unlawful damage, and stealing an air conditioner valued at GhC7,000.00.

Boateng pleaded guilty to all three charges, and the presiding judge, Madam Philomena Ansah Asiedu (Esq.), convicted and sentenced him based on his own admission.

According to Police Inspector (P/Inspt.) Emmanuel Asare, who served as the prosecutor, the incident occurred in the Dormaa Central Municipality of the Bono Region.

The complainant, an artisan, resided on the premises of a newly constructed sports stadium along the Dormaa-Kyeremasu road, while the convict lived in Dormaa-Ahenkro.

On Wednesday, August 23 of the current year, at approximately 1300 hours, a witness observed the convict standing by the roadside near the stadium, carrying items concealed in a sack and a bag suspected to be stolen goods.

P/Inspt. Asare reported that the witness confronted Boateng, questioning him about the contents of the sack, to which the convict provided incoherent answers. Sensing trouble, Boateng attempted to flee but was pursued and apprehended. A subsequent spot search conducted by the witness and others uncovered an air conditioner set and electric cables in the sack.

Further inspection of the bag revealed additional items, including pliers, a hacksaw blade, a pair of scissors, a spanner, and a claw hammer—all suspected to be the tools used by the convict to commit the crimes.

The prosecutor explained that the witness, along with others, brought Boateng to the police station, along with the confiscated items, to report the incident. The complainant later visited the police station and identified the items as property belonging to the state.

During interrogations, Boateng admitted to the offenses and disclosed that he had stolen the items from the newly constructed sports stadium. He even led the police to the scene, pointing out the exact location of the stolen items.

P/Inspt. Asare further stated that the investigation confirmed Boateng’s entry into the sports stadium, where he damaged the air conditioner set and then stole it with the intention of selling it to scrap dealers.

Following the completion of the investigation, Boateng was charged with the offenses and brought before the court for adjudication.

Tottenham sign Brennan Johnson from Forest

Tottenham has announced the signing of Brennan Johnson, hailing from Nottingham Forest.

This talented Wales international forward has inked a deal with our club, securing his commitment until 2029. He will proudly don the number 22 shirt.

Brennan, aged 22, was born in Nottingham and began his football journey in Forest’s academy at the tender age of eight. Over the years, he progressed through the ranks and made his Championship debut against West Brom in August 2019.

In the 2020/21 season, he embarked on a fruitful loan spell at Lincoln City, where his impressive tally of 13 goals contributed to the Imps’ journey to the League One Play-Off Final.

Additionally, his standout performances earned him his first senior cap for Wales, as he represented his country against the USA in November 2020.

Upon his return to the City Ground, Brennan played a pivotal role as Forest secured promotion from the Championship to the Premier League in the 2021/22 season. He showcased his goal-scoring prowess by netting 19 times in all competitions, including 16 in the league.

He notably found the back of the net in both legs of the semi-finals against Sheffield United, helping Forest return to the top flight through the play-offs. His remarkable performances earned him several accolades, including EFL Young Player of the Month in September, Championship Player of the Month for April, and the Championship’s Young Player of the Season.

Brennan maintained a consistent presence during his debut Premier League season, making 38 appearances and contributing eight goals. He also played a crucial role as Forest advanced to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, adding two more goals to his tally.

Having represented Wales at various youth levels, Brennan boasts an impressive 20 senior caps and was part of Rob Page’s squad for the World Cup last year.

  • Promotions between 2008 and 2016 in Police Service were politically inspired – COP Alex Mensah

Promotions between 2008 and 2016 in Police Service were politically inspired – COP Alex Mensah

COP Alex George Mensah, a former director of operations at the Police Service, testified before the ad hoc committee investigating the leaked audio regarding an alleged attempt to depose IGP Dr. George Akufo-Addo.

During his testimony, he asserted that promotions within the police service between 2008 and 2016 were influenced by political considerations.

COP Mensah contended that certain police personnel received promotions during this period primarily due to the fact that the NDC was in power. He shared his personal experience, revealing that his own promotion was significantly delayed, and it only materialized after the NPP government came into office.

He also claimed that the current IGP’s promotion to the rank of Commissioner was largely influenced by the NDC being in power at the time, rather than solely based on merit.

These statements prompted a response from Vice Chair of the Committee, James Agalga, who refuted the allegations and requested that the Committee take exception to Mensah’s assertions.

The Chairman’s counsel, Atta Akyea, subsequently addressed the issue by clarifying that Mensah’s comments represented his personal perspective and did not necessarily reflect the broader reality of promotions within the police force.

When questioned about whether his own promotion was influenced by his affiliation with the NPP, Mensah affirmed that he was promoted based on merit and emphasized that the promotion process under the NDC government was often politically influenced, whereas it differed under the NPP’s administration.

  • Bamboo Processing Factory in Central Region to begin operation after trial

Bamboo Processing Factory in Central Region to begin operation after trial

Maxwell Investments Group has successfully completed a trial run of their bamboo processing facility, which holds the promise of generating income for the local population in the Central region and its surrounding areas.

In collaboration with their European partners, this project is set to handle approximately one hundred thousand tonnes of bamboo daily once it reaches full operational capacity.

Dr. Maxwell Ampong, the Chief Executive of the Group, emphasized the importance of continued support from the private sector and various government agencies, recognizing that as a young business, they require further assistance to thrive and reach their goals.

“This is a young initiative we got support from our European partners and we’re looking for about one hundred tonnes of bamboo per day machinery that can take care of the whole country supply because bamboo is technically a weed all over the place and resource identification has really passed over the heads of many people as Africans”.

“The idea is to provide collection points all over our beloved country where people in the rural communities especially can bring few strands of bamboo to get something for breakfast or lunch and this is what excites us at MIG, the impact we can create within various micro-economies spread across the nation,” he disclosed.

The establishment of this facility was driven by the aim of making a positive impact on the lives of people, particularly those in rural areas throughout the country, by providing them with a source of income.

Dr. Ampong emphasized that there is a readily available market for bamboo products in Europe, which underscores the necessity of securing an adequate supply of raw materials for processing.

He firmly believes that the project’s success hinges on the need for support, as it aspires to become a means of livelihood for many individuals.

Additionally, Dr. Ampong hinted at expansion plans for the facility to extend its benefits to a broader population and offer economic support to additional communities.

This Bamboo project represents yet another initiative by Maxwell Investments Group to combat poverty in rural regions, with a particular focus on Zongo and Inner-City communities.

  • ATTC students risk suspension for appearing in music video with school uniforms

ATTC students risk suspension for appearing in music video with school uniforms

A group of tertiary students from Accra Technical Training Centre (ATTC) have found themselves at the center of a controversy that is causing concern within their educational institution.

These students had gained recognition for their remarkable dance talents, which had previously gone viral within the school.

However, their current predicament stems from their participation in a music video produced by the Ghanaian Afrobeatz artist, OliveTheBoy, where they appeared wearing their school uniforms. What has triggered outrage is the content of the video, which includes explicit themes, particularly focusing on sexual affairs, a stark departure from the wholesome image they had previously portrayed.

The students initially gained fame for their dance routine to Ghanaian dancehall artist Stonebwoy’s “Apotheke” song within the school premises. This time, they took their performance skills outside the campus by featuring in OliveTheBoy’s latest music video, “Goodsin.”

The school authorities swiftly responded, expressing their displeasure over the students’ involvement in the controversial video. They have launched an investigation to determine why the students left the school grounds to participate in the production while dressed in their uniforms, a clear violation of the school’s rules and regulations.

The video quickly gained attention on various social media platforms, leading to a divided school community. Some argue that the students have the right to pursue their interests outside of school, while others believe that their actions have harmed the school’s reputation.

This incident has also sparked discussions about the roles of educators and parents in monitoring and guiding students’ activities beyond the classroom. Many are questioning whether the students received adequate guidance and supervision regarding their participation in such a video.

At present, the school’s administration is reviewing the matter and contemplating disciplinary measures, including potential suspensions for the students involved. This incident underscores the challenges educators face in striking a balance between nurturing students’ creativity and upholding the institution’s values and standards.

As the investigation progresses, the students find themselves in an unfavorable spotlight, with their futures hanging in the balance as the school determines the appropriate course of action.

  • Nobody is a grassroots person than Bawumia – Kofi Tonto

Nobody is a grassroots person than Bawumia – Kofi Tonto

A government spokesperson and staunch member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kofi Tonto, has asserted that no individual in the ruling government is more connected with the rank and file of the party as compared to the Vice President.

According to Kofi Tonto, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is exceptionally involved with grassroots-level activities or communities and as such has a strong presence and influence among the local communities.

In an interview on Peace FM, he noted that since 2008, during his days as running mate to now President Akufo-Addo, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia toured the entire country and engaged every delegate that came his way.

He further noted that in his current capacity as Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia still engages a delegate weekly.

There are some elite people and don’t mingle with the grassroots.

“People speak about the grassroots. I don’t think any of the candidates have grass-roots support like Dr Bawumia. He has been a vice presidential candidate (running mate) since 2008. He has been Vice President since 2017.

“During his time as running mate, he toured the entire country, and almost every delegate had an encounter with him. So by virtue of his work, he engages a delegate every week and a constituency executive. So there is no one in the race who has had deep engagements with delegates from the polling station level to the regional level than Bawumia.”

Mr Kofi Tonto therefore shot down claims that delegates were coerced to vote for the Vice President at the just-ended Super Delegates Conference.

“Some people allege that people were forced to vote for Dr Bawumia. They just want to say that the Vice President didn’t win the elections fairly. People have said that on various platforms.”

He therefore said: “But that is not the case. Bawumia won because he has worked, he has served, and he has sacrificed for the progress of the party. He knows how to unite people, so no one went to strangle people and demanded that they vote for Bawumia.”

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia won the super delegates conference with a total of 629 votes, representing 68.15% of the total valid votes.

Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong came in second, while former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen placed third. Former Agriculture Minister, Dr Afriyie Akoto placed fourth, whereas, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko and Francis Addai-Nimoh tied.

Currently, Mr Boakye Agyarko has withdrawn from a re-run election over alleged legal breaches by the leadership of the party.

The NPP is set to determine its flagbearer in November during its primaries.

  • Proposals on review of SSNIT contributions welcomed – NPRA Boss

Proposals on review of SSNIT contributions welcomed – NPRA Boss

Chief Executive of the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA), Hayford Atta Krufi, has expressed his support for the proposals to raise contributions to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) tier one scheme.

These proposals have been put forth by SSNIT and various stakeholders within the pensions industry, with the aim of ensuring the sustainability of the scheme.

A recent actuarial report has highlighted that Ghana’s pension system could face significant challenges in the next decade if steps are not taken to reassess the contribution rates.

Mr. Krufi emphasized that any decision regarding contribution adjustments would rely on recommendations from various participants within the industry.

He made these remarks during an appearance on PM Express Business Edition with host George Wiafe.

“We should realize that government employers as well as the various union will be the ones making the payment and their view is very important”, he said.

He further mentioned that discussions are presently underway to determine whether there should be an increase in SSNIT contributions or not.

Additionally, Mr. Krufi revealed that the NPRA is actively engaged in the process of revising the investment guidelines applicable to SSNIT. This is part of broader efforts to lower the operational costs associated with SSNIT.

Regarding the calls for a review of the current retirement age, which is set at 60 years, Mr. Krufi explained that any decision in this regard would need to align with the constitution. Amending the law on retirement age would require the involvement of both the government and parliament.

“This has to do more with the country’s constitution. Discussions may start now with Parliamentarians in terms of role they can play, when it comes to the review of the pension”, he said.

The new National Pension Scheme was instituted by the National Pensions Act, Act 766 which ensures that every Ghanaian worker receives retirement benefits as and when due.

The Act 766 which was passed on December 12th, 2008 mandated the establishment of a new contributory Three-Tier Pension Scheme with the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) to oversee the efficient administration of the composite pension scheme

The New Pension Scheme was launched on 16th September, 2009 and its implementation started in January 2010.

The First Tier is the Basic National Social Security Scheme for all workers in Ghana.  It is a defined benefit scheme and mandatory for workers to have 13.5% contributions made on their behalf.  The contribution is managed by SSNIT.

The Second Tier is a defined contributory Occupational Pension Scheme mandatory for workers with 5% contribution made on behalf of members.  The contribution is managed privately by approved Trustees.

The Third Tier, which includes all Provident Funds and all other Pension Funds outside Tiers I and II is a voluntary scheme.

  • IGP leaked tape on his ousting, he directed the secret recording – COP Alex Mensah claims

IGP leaked tape on his ousting, he directed the secret recording – COP Alex Mensah claims

COP George Alex Mensah, who has been implicated in a leaked audio recording allegedly plotting the removal of Inspector General of Police (IGP) COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has made a startling claim.

During his concluding remarks on the second day of his appearance before the special seven-member parliamentary committee investigating the leaked tape, COP Mensah alleged that it was IGP Dampare himself who orchestrated the release of the audio.

Before the committee, chaired by Samuel Atta Akyea and with James Agalga as the vice-chair, COP Mensah asserted that COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare surreptitiously planted the device used to secretly record their conversation.

COP Alex Mensah attributed these allegations to the intelligence information he had at his disposal.

“My intel suggests that what was used to tape the conversation was done by the current IGP. He sent some people to do it, and after which he went for it. So, the tape, from my intel, is with the IGP, and he caused it to be leaked

“So, if this committee wants the tape, the right person to call before this committee, is the Inspector General of Police,” he stated.

COP Mensah’s response came in reply to a question from Samuel Atta Akyea regarding whether he possessed the complete, unaltered audio of the conversation concerning the removal of the IGP, especially given his claim that certain segments of the leaked version did not accurately represent their discussion.

In an earlier statement to the committee, COP Alex Mensah expressed his disappointment at Bugri Naabu, a former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who was also involved in the audio recording. COP Mensah conveyed his dismay over the fact that their private conversation had been recorded without his knowledge or consent.

  • Gabon suspended by AU after ousting of Ali Bongo

Gabon suspended by AU after ousting of Ali Bongo

The African Union’s Peace and Security Council has taken swift action in response to the recent military coup in Gabon.

In a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, the council expressed its strong condemnation of the coup and announced the immediate suspension of Gabon’s participation in all activities of the AU, as well as its organs and institutions.

This decision was made during a council meeting convened to address the situation in Gabon, which unfolded following disputed elections that resulted in President Ali Bongo Ondimba being declared the winner.

The meeting was chaired by Bankole Adeoye of Nigeria, the African Union commissioner for political affairs, and the current chair of the council, Willy Nyamitwe of Burundi.

The military coup in Gabon marked the conclusion of the Bongo family’s nearly six-decade-long rule and posed a fresh challenge for a region that has grappled with a total of eight coups since 2020.

Nigeria’s recently elected president Bola Tinubu called it a “contagion of autocracy”.

“My fear has been confirmed in Gabon that copy cats will start doing the same thing until it is stopped,” Tinubu, who chairs West Africa’s main regional body ECOWAS, said on Thursday.

The military general who led the overthrow of Gabon’s Bongo dynasty is set to be inaugurated as the transitional president on Monday, according to an announcement by the army. Meanwhile, the opposition is demanding that their candidate be officially recognized as the victor of the recent weekend elections.

The military sought to reassure donors they would “respect all commitments” at home and abroad and “phase in” transitional institutions, Colonel Ulrich Manfoumbi Manfoumbi, spokesman for the new regime, said on state television.

The swearing-in ceremony for the new leader, General Brice Oligui Nguema, is scheduled to take place at the constitutional court, as disclosed by a spokesman. This marks the initial indication of how the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) intends to operate following the coup that occurred on Wednesday.

The ECCAS (Economic Community of Central African States) has strongly condemned the coup and expressed its intention to convene a meeting of heads of state in the near future to determine the appropriate response. However, the statement did not specify a date for this meeting.

The coup was initiated by senior officers in Gabon shortly after the election body declared that President Bongo had secured a third term following Saturday’s vote.

Subsequently, a video surfaced of President Bongo detained in his residence, appealing to international allies for assistance while seemingly unaware of the unfolding events. The officers also announced General Nguema, the former head of the presidential guard, as the new head of state.

On Wednesday, Tinubu announced that he was collaborating closely with other African leaders to address what he referred to as the “spread of autocracy” across Africa.

In response to the coup in Niger on July 26, ECOWAS had threatened military intervention and imposed sanctions. However, the military government has not yielded to these measures. Similarly, military leaders in other African nations, such as Mali, have resisted international pressure, managing to maintain their grip on power and, in some cases, even garnering popular support.

The Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), representing Central Africa’s political bloc, issued a statement condemning the coup. ECCAS announced plans for an “imminent” meeting of heads of state to determine an appropriate response, although no specific date was provided.

According to Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque, reporting from Dakar, Senegal, the response from the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) has been relatively subdued. This may be attributed in part to concerns in the region about the potential for a “contagion of coups” among countries with political systems similar to the Bongo dynasty.

  • Joe Wise projects over 60% votes for Bawumia in NPP Primaries

Joe Wise projects over 60% votes for Bawumia in NPP Primaries

First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu, has expressed confidence that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will secure a resounding victory in the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primaries on November 4, particularly among the Super Delegates.

Mr Osei Owusu anticipates that Dr. Bawumia will garner more than 68% of the vote in this critical party conference.

Vice President Dr. Bawumia, who aspires to lead the NPP in the 2024 general elections, recently secured an impressive 68.15% of the vote in a Special Delegates’ Conference held on August 26.

In that event, other strong contenders, including Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong and former Trades Minister Alan Kyerematen, secured 14.30% and 10.29% of the vote, respectively, placing them in second and third positions.

Joseph Osei Owusu, speaking at the launch of Professor Kwesi Yankah’s book titled “The Pen At Risk, Spilling My Little Beans,” reiterated his belief in Vice President Dr. Bawumia’s imminent victory.

“Five people were elected, which was the expected result, right? I’m surprised that the Vice President got a lower vote than we had expected. But there’s no doubt he will win. People are talking about a small number, but on the ground, he’s even more popular than the party’s people. Among them, Dr. Bawumia is more popular than anyone else. They love him. I come to my constituency, and every day people love him.”

“For me, representing them, I have no choice but to vote for him. It’s not just about us, but the people on the ground, in the communities, and in constituencies, they love him. At the very least, he will come with the same margin he won, but we expect it to be more.”

Joseph Osei Owusu also refuted allegations of vote-buying made by certain factions supporting other aspirants.

“In the days when I was growing up, if you made an allegation, you went out to look for evidence to support it. So it’s all about people saying, ‘Oh, these people gave out money.’ But nobody has provided any evidence, no substance. And it’s a real pity. It’s most unbecoming of the contestants and their supporters to be throwing out allegations which are not substantiated.”

Dampare has shut the mouths of every police officer – COP Alex Mensah

One of the police officers being investigated over the alleged plot to remove the current Inspector General of Police (IGP) in a leaked tape, COP Alex Mensah, has accused Dr George Akuffo Dampare of gagging the mouths of his subjects.

According to COP Alex Mensah, his assertion that the Service has been mismanaged under the supervision of Dr George Akuffo Dampare stems from this reason.

“I’ve insisted that he is not managing the Service very well. Why, because now, as we speak, he has shut up the mouths of every police officer, including the Public Affairs Department. Nobody speaks,” he said.

He made this known when he appeared before the Parliamentary Committee set up by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to investigate the planned ousting of the IGP on Friday, September 1, 2023.

COP Alex Mensah has, however, clarified that he has no personal contention with his superior but engages in professional disagreement.

“As I sit here, I don’t have any dad blood but what I do is, I speak my mind whether you like it or not.”

“You are my boss and you do what I don’t like, I’ll tell you and you decide to hate me for that, that is your matter,” he added when he appeared before the committee on Thursday, August 31.

  • Leaked tape probe: Bugri Nabu told Mr Asare govt was looking for a replacement for Dampare – COP Alex Mensah

Leaked tape probe: Bugri Nabu told Mr Asare govt was looking for a replacement for Dampare – COP Alex Mensah

COP Alex Mensah, who is being investigated over the alleged plot to remove the current Inspector General of Police (IGP), in a leaked tape, says he received intel that the government was considering a replacement for Dr George Akuffo Dampare.

He made this claim when he appeared before the Parliamentary committee tasked with probing the leaked tape on Friday, September 1, 2023.

According to COP Alex Mensah, former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bugri Naabu, informed Superintendent Asare that Dr Akuffo Dampare was going to be replaced.

“Mr Bugri Naabu told Asare that the IGP is likely to be changed and they are looking for a replacement.”

When asked the rationale behind the replacement by a member of the committee, James Agalga, COP Alex said: “What he said is that he wants to change him because they don’t like the kind of work that he is doing. That’s all he said.”

He therefore, per his account with Parliament’s committee, sent his CV to Bugri Naabu for the role of IGP.

“I had heard his name when it comes to NPP party circles, that he was a former chairman; he is a friend of the President. So once my boy told me that the man says he is ready to recommend me but he wants to see me, I said why not,” he said.

COP Alex Mensah shares the same alleged sentiment that the IGP has been ‘inefficient’ due to ‘mismanagement”. According to him, many officials in the Service have been gagged by the IGP.

“I’ve insisted that he is not managing the Service very well. Why, because now, as we speak, he has shut up the mouths of every police officer, including the Public Affairs Department. Nobody speaks,” he said.

The Police Management Board (POMAB) is headed by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

The Board is made up of Schedule Officers who assist the IGP in the day-to-day administration of the Ghana Police Service.

  • I lobbied for IGP position through Bugri Naabu because he is friends with Akufo-Addo – COP Alex Mensah

I lobbied for IGP position through Bugri Naabu because he is friends with Akufo-Addo – COP Alex Mensah

COP George Alex Mensah, one of the individuals being investigated over the alleged plot to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare in a leaked tape, has justified why he sought the assistance of Bugri Naabu in his quest to become IGP.

On Thursday, August 31, COP George Alex Mensah, while being interrogated by the parliamentary committee tasked with investigating the matter, noted that he submitted his CV to an individual, with the intention that it would be given to former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bugri Naabu, who would then advocate for him to be appointed as the IGP.

“I gave my CV to someone to give to Bugri Naabu for him to lobby for me to be appointed the IGP. We all lobby. I started lobbying since 2017,” he said while emphasising that lobbying is a common practice.

On Friday, September 1, COP George Alex Mensah revealed why he decided to channel his ambition through Bugri Naabu.

According to COP George Alex Mensah, he did so because Bugri Naabu is friends with President Akufo-Addo, who is cloaked by law to appoint the Inspector General of Police.

When asked by the chair of the committee, Samuel Atta Akyea, if he had hope that Bugri Naabu could ensure he became IGP, COP Alex gave an affirmative response.

“I had heard his name when it comes to NPP party circles, that he was a former chairman; he is a friend of the President. So once my boy told me that the man says he is ready to recommend me but he wants to see me, I said why not,” he said.

He also noted that he received intel that the government was considering changing the current IGP.

“Mr Bugri Naabu told Mr Asare that the IGP is likely to be changed and they are looking for a replacement.”

When asked the rationale behind the replacement by a member of the committee, James Agalga, COP Alex said: “What he said is that he wants to change him because they don’t like the kind of work that he is doing. That’s all he said.”

For COP Alex Mensah, he is best placed to assume the role of Inspector General of Police. He therefore began taking actions to see to it that he became IGP, as far back as 2017.

In July 2021, President Akufo-Addo appointed the Commissioner of Police (COP) George Akuffo Dampare to serve as the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP).

In October 2021, the president swore in Dr. George Akuffo Dampare as the substantive IGP.

  • Your unprofessional comment against us is ‘irresponsible’ – GNFS takes on Onua TV management over fire incident

Your unprofessional comment against us is ‘irresponsible’ – GNFS takes on Onua TV management over fire incident

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has taken on Media General over what it deems unbalanced reportage over the recent fire incident at the latter’s premises.

In August, a portion of the Onua Showtime Studio, where TV presenter and actress, Nana Ama McBrown produces her show, was severely damaged by fire.

While announcing the incident in a Facebook post, the GNFS noted that management of TV3 Ghana Limited praised its team for their prompt response.

“Management of TV3 Ghana limited praised firefighters for the prompt response in attending to fire involving a studio used for ONUA Showtime with Mcbrown.

A crew from the Headquarters Substation upon a call arrived on time to help prevent the spread of fire on the premises of TV3.

Even though portions of the reception area of the studio was burnt, the main studio area and the backstage were salvaged from the fire.

Management expressed their appreciation and joy to the GNFS for their prompt response in averting a major disaster,” the GNFS posted.

In reaction, Onua TV noted that its staff members at the media house were able to put out the fire before the arrival of the firemen.

They therefore urged the Fire Service to be professional and factual with their publications.

“Onua TV has expressed concern about the publication of a fire incident that occurred on Monday August 21, 2023, on the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) social media platform. The publication falsely reported that “a crew from the headquarters substation, upon a call, arrived on time to help prevent the spread of fire”. The facts are that the fire had already been put out by our staff, with onsite extinguishers, before the firefighters arrived. Moreover, the fire did not occur “in the Studio used by Onua Showtime with Mcbrown” as reported. Rather, the incident happened at the entrance to the studio. The false publication was widely republished on other social media and online platforms, thereby causing alarm and unnecessary panic among our stakeholders. The misrepresentation of facts was unprofessional and GNFS is urged to be factual in its publications,” Onua TV wrote.

In a rebuttal, the Ghana National Fire Service noted that nowhere in its earlier statement did it take responsibility for dousing the flame.

It was noted that the miscommunication could not have been created by the Service but by social media and online platforms.

The GNFS also noted that it received a call from Media General about the negative publicity that its publication was giving the company.

As such, the GNFS pulled down its earlier post on the incident due to “respect and not because we were guilty or unprofessional”.

The GNFS therefore finds the comments by the media house “very irresponsible”.

Livestreaming: Parliamentary committee continues probing COP Alex Mensah on plot to oust IGP

The Parliamentary Ad-Hoc Committee, assigned to investigate the alleged plot to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has returned after adjourning its meeting with COP George Alex Mensah, Director of Operations at the Ghana Police Service.

The committee adjourned the meeting for an hour to allow COP George Alex and his counsel to have access to the leaked tape for hearing.

On Thursday, August 31, two key figures implicated in the alleged plot, COP George Alex Mensah, Director of Operations at the Ghana Police Service, and Superintendent Emmanuel Gyebi, appeared before the committee to respond to inquiries.

In his submission, COP George Alex Mensah accused former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Northern Regional Chairman, Daniel Bugri Naabu of falsehood during his appearance before the committee.

Daniel Bugri Naabu is expected to appear before the committee today.

Ansu Fati signs for Brighton & Hove Albion on loan

Barcelona and Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club have come to an agreement for the loan of Ansu Fati until June 30, 2024, with no option for a permanent transfer.

Ansu Fati, who spent his formative years at Barça, will continue his footballing development in the Premier League. The striker first joined FC Barcelona at the age of 10 in 2012, transitioning from the Sevilla youth setup.

He began with the U12A team and swiftly progressed through the ranks, ultimately reaching the first team.

Donning the number 31 jersey, he made his debut in 2019 at the tender age of 16 in a league match against Betis. Just six days later, he netted his first goal for the club against Osasuna in another league fixture.

Ansu Fati’s statistics from the 2019/20 season underscored the young forward’s quality. In that campaign, he made 33 appearances, including 15 as a starter, scoring eight goals and providing one assist.

Moreover, he established several records, such as becoming the youngest starter in the club’s history and the youngest player to score and assist in a league game, among others.

In the 2020/21 season, Fati was officially included in the first team and took on the number 22 jersey. However, what seemed like a season destined to solidify his status as one of Europe’s premier strikers was marred by a knee injury that required surgery, causing him to miss a significant portion of the campaign.

Now sporting the number 10 shirt, the striker made his comeback in September 2021 and, since his return, has participated in 69 matches and scored 16 goals.

Sterling is not happy after England snub – Southgate reveals

Gareth Southgate has acknowledged that Raheem Sterling expressed his dissatisfaction after not being included in the England squad.

Despite being one of the national team’s most seasoned players with 82 caps, Sterling has not been part of the squad since the World Cup quarter-final exit to France in December.

An injury kept Sterling out of England’s March gathering, and ongoing hamstring concerns led to what his representatives described as a “mutual decision” to prioritize his physical recovery, especially after a challenging first season at Chelsea.

Despite a strong start to the season, Sterling did not receive the recall he had hoped for. Southgate omitted him from the squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine and a friendly match in Scotland.

“We were really pleased with the group (in June),” the England manager said.

“To bring Raheem back in we have to leave someone else out and on the back of three games I didn’t think anybody in this group of attacking players warrants being left out.

“It’s really good to see him start the season so well. He looks in good condition, he looks hungry.

“He’s obviously an important player for us and has been an important player for us.

“But we have in those attacking areas just behind the nine a lot of competition for places.

“I think all of those players have started the season well and certainly the group that are with us has done really well for us in the in the recent games.”

Put to the England boss that Sterling has missed three squads in a row, he said: “He was not available for the last two and of course that’s given other people the opportunity to play well and to establish themselves in the group.

“It’s a difficult call and Raheem is not particularly happy about it, but I understand that because he’s an important player for us.

“I’m convinced he’s going to have an excellent season with Chelsea, there’s no doubt about that.”

Southgate made a point of calling Sterling about his decision as he was conscious that he has been “a really big player for us” and wanted to acknowledge how well he has been playing.

“Raheem is always really respectful with how he responds and deals (with things),” the England boss said.

“He will always say ‘look, I respect your decision’ but of course he wants to get back in the group. And I wouldn’t expect that to be any other way.”

A statement from the player’s camp reinforced that Southgate’s “decision has been respected”, adding that “Raheem will continue to focus on his domestic form”.

Sterling has been in impressive form, featuring in Chelsea’s starting lineup for the first three Premier League matches of the season. During Friday’s 3-0 victory against Luton, he contributed with two goals and an assist.

In contrast to Sterling’s omission, Gareth Southgate retained his trust in England vice-captain Jordan Henderson, despite Henderson’s move to the Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq generating controversy.

Southgate also included former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire and Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips in the squad, even though both players have not seen any action in club football this season.

Southgate highlighted that “I haven’t always said we just pick on form because clearly that hasn’t been the case in a number of positions”.

England’s absentee-hit central defence and lack of single pivot midfield options help explain the involvement of Maguire and Phillips, but they are not guaranteed to keep their places if club issues remain.

“I think with Harry, the injuries to (Raphael) Varane and (Luke) Shaw probably mean that there is unlikely to be any change there in terms of a change of clubs,” Southgate said ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline.

“So, no, I can’t sit here and say it’s an ideal situation with either.

“With the centre-backs, we have got a chance for others to come in (due to absences) and there are others playing in the role.

“In midfield it’s more of a concern because of the specifics of the position.

“I know I’ve talked about the low numbers of English players playing and people say: ‘What are you moaning about? You’ve got a great squad to pick from’.

“But it’s the positional specifics. There is a lack of depth in certain areas – left-back is one and midfield pivot is definitely another.”

Southgate largely stuck with the tried and tested for September’s double-header, but there was a place for uncapped Chelsea defender Levi Colwill and, more surprisingly, Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah.

‘Trotro’ driver arrested for attacking colleague tenant with hammer

The Kasoa District Police Command in Akweley, Kasoa, has apprehended a 30-year-old man named Kwabena Brenya, a bus driver, in connection with a violent assault involving a wall hammer during a domestic dispute among tenants sharing accommodation.

The incident, which occurred on the evening of Monday, August 28, 2023, has resulted in one victim, Edmond Ampomah, being in critical condition.

Ampomah is currently undergoing treatment at the Mother and Child Hospital in Kasoa, where he is displaying signs of neurological damage stemming from the brutal attack.

The dispute originated from a disagreement between Edmond Ampomah’s wife and Kwabena Brenya, both tenants within the same compound. The dispute centered on improper waste disposal within their shared residence.

In response to his wife’s request, Ampomah rushed home to mediate the escalating dispute. However, the situation escalated beyond expectations.

Kwabena Brenya unleashed a ferocious hammer attack, targeting not only Ampomah but also another individual present.

The attack was so severe that Ampomah lost consciousness at the scene, prompting immediate transportation to the Mother and Child Hospital in Kasoa, where he remains hospitalized.

Medical assessments, including scans, have revealed a skull fracture as a result of the vicious assault.

The Kasoa District Police Command has taken Kwabena Brenya into custody and is currently conducting a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
