Journalists working with Multimedia Group and Media General who were on their way to report on a tragic accident that occurred on the Bibiani-Anhweaso road have also been involved in an accident.
The victims are Mr. Joseph Apala (Adom TV) and Kwamena Fynn (Onua TV). They are currently receiving treatment at a health facility.
A tragic accident that occurred on the Bibiani-Anhweaso road involving four individuals included a pregnant woman.
The victims were traveling in a Sprinter bus with the registration number GS 7077-20, making their way back from Kumasi to Sehwi Wiawso in the Western North Region on Wednesday, August 29, 2023.
Per reports, the Sprinter bus was involved in a head-on collision with a private saloon car bearing the registration number GS 8020-19 near the Kwamekrom WAPCO filling station along the Bibiani-Anhweaso road.
Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted that the Sprinter bus driver was operating at a high speed and failed to navigate safely when confronted by the private car, which was entering the main road from the filling station without properly checking for oncoming traffic.
All four victims, including the pregnant woman, suffered varying degrees of injuries and were promptly transported to the Bibiani government hospital for medical treatment.
The eyewitnesses placed blame on the private car driver for recklessly causing the accident.
Meanwhile, reports have it that one of the injured has passed on.

“I’ll blame the private car driver for the accident, he was coming from WAPCO, and he had a fault, the sprinter bus was also coming from Kumasi and all I saw was a collision which threw the sprinter bus into the bush, and there was a pregnant woman in there and some other children so they were all injured,” an eyewitness recounted.
A victim shared her ordeal with the media.
“All I saw was a car coming from the left side of the road, a black car which immediately passed in front of our car, I just saw our car lifted up and it fell back somewhere.”
“I was asleep so everything happened so everything looked like a dream, so if you asks the eyewitnesses and they say the same thing then that’s what happened,” a female victim said.
The recent coup d’etats which have taken West Africa by storm were earlier predicted by General Overseer of the Action Chapel International ministry, Archbishop Duncan Williams.
In an interview with broadcast journalist, Paul Adom-Otchere in 2021, the revered man of God announced an uprising by the youth in West Africa.
According to Archbishop Duncan Williams, the revolt coming like a “wind” can be likened to the Arab uprising – anti-government protests, demonstrations, and uprisings that swept across several countries in the Arab world, primarily in North Africa and the Middle East, starting in late 2010.
“There is a wind coming. And it’s not 2019, it will begin after 2020. The Arab uprising is coming. It’s coming not just to Ghana – West Africa, all over if we don’t do something,” he said.
The only way to avert such a calamity, he said, is to provide the youth with hope of a better tomorrow.
During the period he conducted the interview, the Archbishop noted that the youth have no will to live, hence will give up their life to fight the current system – a matter he found concerning.
“If we don’t give them hope, that’s why I am going back to the schools, speak to them. I am engaging the youth again because if we don’t give them hope and a sense of direction…”
He stressed: “The most dangerous thing in life is to fight somebody who has nothing to lose. They don’t have wives, children, cars, lands. They have no hope, nothing to live for. They don’t mind dying.”
Archbishop Duncan Williams acknowledged the potential of AGENDA 2063, which is Africa’s blueprint and master plan for transforming Africa into the global powerhouse of the future.
The genesis of Agenda 2063 was the realisation by African leaders that there was a need to refocus and reprioritise Africa’s agenda from the struggle against apartheid and the attainment of political independence for the continent which had been the focus of The Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the precursor of the African Union; and instead to prioritise inclusive social and economic development, continental and regional integration, democratic governance and peace and security amongst other issues aimed at repositioning Africa to becoming a dominant player in the global arena.
According to the man of God, such an initiative will only become effective should past and present leaders come together and do away with the propaganda politics which has failed to address the needs of Africans.
“It will work only if our leaders, especially former presidents and the leaders of today will come together and say ‘let’s take hold of our country. Let’s do something because this party politics as much as is democracy, we have to do it in the context of what works with our tradition. If we don’t look at it carefully, it will create an atmosphere that the countries of Africa will become very difficult to govern,” he stated.
The Arab Uprising began in Tunisia in December 2010 when a street vendor named Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in protest of police harassment and government corruption. His act of self-immolation ignited mass protests and demonstrations, eventually leading to the downfall of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011.
The success of the Tunisian uprising inspired similar movements in other Arab countries, including Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Syria, and Bahrain, among others. Each country’s circumstances and outcomes varied, but the common thread was the demand for political reform, human rights, and improved living conditions.
The Arab Uprising had varying degrees of success in different countries. In Egypt, protests led to the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak in February 2011. However, the transition to democracy was complicated, and political turmoil persisted. In Libya, the uprising escalated into a civil war, with international intervention leading to the eventual overthrow of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s regime. Syria’s uprising evolved into a protracted and devastating civil war that continues to this day.
Other countries experienced varying levels of government responses, from limited reforms to violent crackdowns on protests. The Arab Uprising brought attention to long-standing grievances and sparked discussions about political change and social justice across the region.
While the outcomes of the Arab Uprising were mixed and often complex, the movement highlighted the power of people’s voices in demanding change and pushed the Arab world into a period of significant transformation and uncertainty.
Life after the prophecy
West Africa has observed numerous military overthrow since Archbishop Duncan William’s prediction.
In the past three years, the West African sub-region has witnessed a total of six successful coups.
Mali experienced two coups, the first in August 2020 and the second in May 2021. Guinea faced a military takeover in 2021, while Burkina Faso encountered two coups in January and September 2022.
In Mali’s case, President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta was ousted from power by a military coalition in August. Subsequently, Mali’s former Defense Minister, Bah Ndaw, assumed the presidency of the new transitional government, with Colonel Assimi Goita appointed as vice president. However, they were both removed from power a year later in May by Colonel Assimi Goita.
On September 5, 2021, Guinea experienced a coup d’état as the armed forces captured President Alpha Condé, who had extended his stay in power through a constitutional amendment.

In Burkina Faso, President Roch Kabore was ousted from power on January 24, 2022, following a coup led by Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba. However, eight months later, military rule was reestablished, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

The most recent incident is the military takeover in Niger, where General Abdourahamane Tchiani orchestrated a coup on July 26, 2023, overthrowing President Mohamed Bazoum.
The common factor
Guinea’s situation stemmed from President Condé’s alteration of the constitution to extend his term beyond the mandated two terms. He secured a controversial third term in an election marred by violence and alleged irregularities in October 2020.
In Burkina Faso, the escalation of a jihadist insurgency contributed to the leadership change, which was also the reason behind Colonel Assimi Goita’s removal from power.
A recurring theme across these incidents is leaders’ failure to safeguard their citizens. This pattern persists in Niger, as President Bazoum’s administration has faced criticism for inadequately addressing the region’s entrenched violent Islamist extremism over the past decade.
Currently, ECOWAS has intervened hoping to restore Niger to a democratic rule under President Bazoum but the coup leaders have opposed. The leaders on Sunday defied an ultimatum to reinstate the elected president.
Niger currently has the backing of Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea.
Niger now faces the possibility of armed intervention from other West African states. In the interim, Niger’s military leaders have closed the country’s airspace.
Security personnel employed by alleged Chinese illegal miners have shot dead an 18-year-old in Abrokofe, a community within the Juaboso District of the Western North Region.
Two others sustained injury from the attack said to have happened on Wednesday, August 23, 2023
Per reports, the victims, who were community members, were shot while they were at the mining site to work.
Kofi King Arthur, the deceased, suffered a fatal chest wound and tragically passed away at the scene.
Joseph Tawiah and Albert Oppong, the two injured individuals, were struck in the thigh and lower back, respectively, and are currently undergoing treatment at the St John of God Hospital in Sefwi Asafo.
According to local residents, they are prohibited from accessing the mining site except on “Breaking Days” when the Chinese miners are not operational. However, on that fateful day, security personnel at the site opened fire on them, resulting in one fatality and two injuries.
Father of one of the victims and the unit committee chairman of Abrokofe, Mr. Barnabas Nketiah, revealed that the injured victims were initially taken to the Kofikrom-Proso Clinic and later transferred to Asafo for medical treatment.
Citi News report indicates that aside from the Aowin Municipality and the Suaman District, which are recognized as illegal mining hotspots, galamsey activities are notably prevalent in the Juaboso District of the Western North Region.
The operations in several areas, including Bonsu Nkwanta, Mintakrom, Yawgyem, Sefwi Juaboso, Boinzan, Abrokofe, Agyemangdiem, Mafia, and Sefwi Elluibo, have caused substantial damage to productive cocoa farms and other arable land in the Juaboso District.
A broadcast cited by the French news agency AFP indicates that the leaders of the coup in Gabon have nominated the head of the presidential guard to lead the transitional government.
Brice Oligui Nguema is expected to lead the country, if the news is anything to go by.
Brice Oligui Nguema was caught in a viral video on social media celebrating hours after the coup that deposed President Ali Bongo Ondimba.
In an earlier TV appearance, soldiers said they were cancelling the result of the election officially won by President Bongo – whose family has been in power for more than half a century.
President Bongo, 64, is under house arrest, surrounded by his family and doctors, military officers have said on national TV in the last few minutes.
Meanwhile, one of President Bongo’s sons has been arrested for ‘treason.’

Adwoa Wiafe encouraged the recipients to utilize the support provided by MTN effectively and, in turn, create a positive impact in the lives of others.
Alexander Tetteh, one of the beneficiaries who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries said, “We thank MTN for the honour done us. These days, it is not easy to run a business and to the extent that MTN is extending a helping hand to MSMEs, all we can say is Ayekoo to MTN for coming to the aid of MSMEs in Ghana. We are forever grateful to you for the kind gesture.”

According to a Reuters journalist, hundreds of individuals have been participating in celebratory gatherings in the city center.
The Agbogbomefia of Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, has joined the collective voices urging the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to refrain from employing force as a means of restoring constitutional order in Niger.
He stressed that a diplomatic approach should be prioritized over the contemplated military intervention by the regional organization.
Togbe Afede XIV said, “Wars are not easily won; what is happening in Ukraine should provide valuable lessons for us. Diplomacy should be our path. I have no doubt that… we should avoid committing our limited resources to a war that’s unlikely to yield victory.”
Addressing the audience during the inauguration of the 2023 Asogli Yam Festival in Accra, Togbe Afede XIV additionally urged traditional leaders to play a role in resolving chieftaincy conflicts within Ghana.
He emphasized that the resolution of these disputes requires transparency and honesty from traditional authorities. Togbe Afede highlighted that disputes frequently arise due to a lack of truthfulness on the part of one or more parties involved.
“Wherever there are disputes, somebody is not telling the truth so, I will encourage our chiefs to hold to the path of strictest honesty so, we can establish peace on the chieftaincy front and also fight the cause of peace across our country and our continent,” he said.
The occasion, which also commemorated the 20th Anniversary of Togbe Afede’s tenure as Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, brought together a gathering of traditional leaders hailing from the Volta Region, Nana Kobina Nketsia V (the Paramount Chief of Essikado Traditional Area in the Western Region), members of the diplomatic community, religious leaders, and various esteemed guests.
During his speech, Togbe Afede emphasized the pivotal role of peace in national development.
He reiterated the Asogli State’s unwavering commitment to collaborative efforts aimed at strengthening peace.
He also expressed his resolute dedication to addressing ongoing chieftaincy conflicts within the country. Togbe Afede firmly asserted, “Between peace and anarchy, there is no choice.”
Russia has expressed “serious concern” regarding the apparent coup unfolding in Gabon.
Furthermore, France has restated its unease about the ongoing situation.
In a new statement from Foreign Minister Olivier Véran, Paris has emphasized its desire for the outcome of Gabon’s recent election to be upheld.
During a press conference, a foreign ministry spokesman, Wang Wenbin urged all sides to commit to dialogue in order to “restore normal order as soon as possible”.
Wang Wenbin also called for the personal safety of President Bongo to be guaranteed.
Gabon’s President, Ali Bongo Ondimba has been ousted by Army officers.
He was recently declared winner after Saturday’s election by the Electoral Commission, garnering 64.27% of the vote with his main challenger Albert Ondo Ossa taking 30.77%.
On Wednesday morning, August 30, twelve soldiers appeared on television , announcing that they were cancelling the results of the election and dissolving “all the institutions of the republic”.
They noted that there has been irresponsible, unpredictable governance resulting in a continuing deterioration in social cohesion that risks leading the country into chaos.
The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has reported an impressive 97 percent participation rate in its Debt Exchange Programme, with bills totaling over GH¢7 billion being tendered. This outcome was achieved at the conclusion of the program on Friday, August 25, 2023.
In July of the same year, COCOBOD initiated its Cocoa Bills Exchange Programme with the aim of restructuring debts amounting to nearly ¢8 billion.
It’s worth noting that COCOBOD has rescheduled settlements to take place on September 4, 2023, instead of the originally planned date of Thursday, August 31, 2023.
“We refer to the debt securities exchange programme launched by the Ghana Cocoa Board (“COCOBOD”) on 14th July 2023 (the Exchange Programme). COCOBOD announces today the results of the Cocoa Bills exchange programme which closed at 4:00 p.m. on 25th August 2023” a statement from CAL Bank said.
“Approximately 97.38% of eligible holdings tendered their Eligible Bills in the Invitation to Exchange as determined by the Central Securities Depository (“CSD”)”, it added.
The statement clarifies that any capitalized terms used in this document without specific definitions should be interpreted according to their meanings as provided in the Exchange.
COCOBOD expressed satisfaction with the outcomes, noting that a significant majority of the Eligible Holdings had participated in the tender process.
“To provide sufficient time to settle the New Cocoa Bonds in an efficient manner, COCOBOD is extending the Settlement Date of the exchange from the previously announced 1st September 2023 to 4th September 2023”.
The issuance date, interest accrual schedules, and payment schedules for the New Cocoa Bonds will be adapted to align with the actual Settlement Date.
With the exception of the provisions in this paragraph, the terms and conditions outlined in the Invitation to Exchange remain unchanged and unaltered. Given that the Invitation Period has concluded, COCOBOD will not entertain new submissions except at its sole discretion, and revocations or withdrawals are not permitted.
In the midst of the military takeover in Gabon, it is crucial to examine the sequence of governments that have governed the nation.
The recently ousted leader is Ali Bongo, who had been declared the winner in Saturday’s election and had been in power for 14 years. He succeeded his father, former President Omar Bongo, in office.
Ali Bongo
Omar Bongo assumed the presidency in 1967 following the death of his predecessor, M’ba. He led the single-party regime of the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG) until 1990, when public pressure compelled him to introduce multi-party politics in Gabon.
In 2009, after 42 years in power, Omar Bongo left office, and Ali Bongo succeeded him.
An interesting fact, as reported by Africa Fact Zone on Twitter, is that former President Omar Bongo accumulated significant wealth during his tenure.
Omar Bongo
According to the tweet, he possessed 70 bank accounts, 39 apartments, 2 Ferraris, 6 Mercedes-Benz cars, 3 Porsches, and a Bugatti in France.
Gabon's former President Omar Bongo had 70 bank accounts, 39 apartments, 2 Ferraris, 6 Mercedes Benz cars, 3 Porsches and a Bugatti in France.
At present, Gabon is under military control, with the military rejecting the results of the recent election.
In a televised address early on Wednesday, twelve soldiers announced the cancellation of the election results and the dissolution of “all the institutions of the republic.”
A woman known as Soshez Fashion, originally from London but residing in Accra, has been implicated in an alleged incident involving the drugging and assault of GhOne TV presenter Yazzi.
As reported by blogger Sel the Bomb, it is claimed that Soshez Fashion, who operates a boutique in Accra, drugged Yazzi and engaged in a threesome with her and her boyfriend.
This story has garnered significant attention in recent days, and additional details are emerging. According to Sel’s account, the three individuals went out for the evening, and at some point, drugs were surreptitiously added to Yazzi’s drink.
Subsequently, they returned to a residence for what is alleged to have been a consensual encounter, despite the presenter supposedly being under the influence of the drugs.
Furthermore, it is purported that Soshez Fashion recorded the entire incident and later used it to threaten Yazzi following a dispute between them.
The matter was subsequently reported to the police, leading to the arrest of the boutique owner, who was later released on bail.
Additionally, due to Yazzi’s reported American citizenship, the American embassy has become involved in the case, and authorities have reportedly seized Soshez’s British passport.
Flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Francis Addai-Nimoh, has pinpointed financial influence as a significant element that dominated the party’s Special Delegates Conference held on August 26.
In response to whether the party’s flagbearer selection process prioritizes convictions, policies, and viewpoints, or financial resources, the aspirant, whose chances of securing a spot among the top five for the party’s ordinary conference on November 4 depend on a September 2 election, cited three key factors.
These factors encompass integrity and intelligence, in addition to financial considerations.
“I know of financial influence and there are three things that I will want to talk about which include financial influence, integrity, and intelligence and I will put integrity and intelligence to be one and financial influence to stand alone.”
During his appearance on Citi TV’s Face to Face, Mr. Addai-Nimoh advised delegates against singularly emphasizing financial factors when selecting party leaders.
He urged them to equally weigh the integrity and intelligence of the aspirants in their decision-making process.
“One must assess between financial influence and integrity and intelligence, and decide which one to go for when deciding who is the most suitable person to whom I should give my vote. So, my advice to delegates is that there is always motivation, but also look at integrity and intelligence. In the end, you are looking for someone in whom you can place your trust, someone who can manage your resources and use them for your benefit. So, only vote for the most suitable person.”
He went on to say that the 9 votes he received in the election, which put him in a run-off with Boakye Agyarko on September 2, came as a surprise to him.
“I was surprised with the results that came from the various regions because they were not the figures that I was hoping to get, and I was disappointed with what I had in the Ashanti Region which is my own region.”
One of the flagbearer aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Francis Addai-Nimoh, has expressed disappointment after the number of votes he garnered at the just-ended Super Delegates Conference.
He polled 9 votes, which put him in a run-off with Boakye Agyarko on September 2, 2023.
According to Mr Addai-Nimoh, what he found most devastating was his failure to garner even one vote from the Ashanti Region, where he hails from.
“I was surprised with the results that came from the various regions because they were not the figures that I was hoping to get, and I was disappointed with what I had in the Ashanti Region which is my own region.”
He made this comment on Citi TV‘s Face to Face show.
When queried about whether the party’s flagbearer race revolves around convictions, policies, views, or monetary resources, the aspirant, whose chances of securing a spot among the top five for the November 4 ordinary party conference depend on the September 2 election, outlined three key factors. These factors include integrity and intelligence.
“I know of financial influence and there are three things that I will want to talk about which include financial influence, integrity, and intelligence and I will put integrity and intelligence to be one and financial influence to stand alone.”

“One must assess between financial influence and integrity and intelligence, and decide which one to go for when deciding who is the most suitable person to whom I should give my vote. So, my advice to delegates is that there is always motivation, but also look at integrity and intelligence. The Energy Ministry has successfully supplied 420,000 clean cookstoves to rural communities throughout Ghana.
Deputy Minister of Energy, Herbert Krappa, emphasized that the government remains dedicated to providing clean and cost-effective energy solutions for the citizens of Ghana.
Addressing attendees at the 12th Sustainable Education and Development Conference held at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development, Deputy Minister Herbert Krappa highlighted the nation’s commitment to achieving a 10% modern renewable energy capacity within the national energy blend by 2030.
In addition to this, the Energy Ministry has reported the discovery of significant quantities of vital “green” minerals, such as lithium and graphite, within Ghana.
“Two-thirds of indoor air pollution has been linked to wood fuels for cooking and domestic use. And we know the health implications of this for our women and girls…And that is why the Ministry of Energy is distributing free Clean Cookstoves to rural communities across Ghana,” he said.
The extraction of these minerals will be carried out in an environmentally sustainable manner, with a focus on maximizing their utility through value-added processes. This strategic approach aims to position Ghana as a central hub for electric vehicles and battery technology production.
Mr. Krappa has announced the establishment of a National Energy Transition Implementation Committee, along with the creation of the National Energy Transition Coordinating Office within the Office of the President. These entities will be responsible for spearheading the execution of the framework.
He clarifies that both the National Energy Transition Framework and the Energy Transition Investment Plan will function as guiding documents for the transformation of Ghana into a climate-resilient, low-carbon energy nation. This transition aims to expedite development and enhance the welfare of our citizens.
He stated, “And on Energy Efficiency, we will continue to promote the use of best-in-class energy appliances, energy efficiency in SMEs, and the use of clean cookstoves. Our target is to ensure 50% LPG penetration by 2030, and our Cylinder Recirculation Model, with which everyone can exchange an empty cylinder with a filled new one, will ensure affordability and safety.”
Herbert Krappa emphasizes that the ministry will fast-track Oil and Gas Exploration and Production efforts to secure funding for the advancement of Clean Energy Technologies. Additionally, there will be ongoing efforts to advocate for and incentivize the use of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) as a means to reduce reliance on wood fuels.
“We believe in responsible exploration of our resources, and we believe in low-carbon oil and gas production. We will explore carbon capture technologies, low carbon auctions, and carbon offsetting while we produce our oil and gas reserves.”
He highlighted that the Ministry of Energy necessitates over $500 billion to realize the nation’s Energy Transition Plan. This plan is slated for launch by the president during the sidelines of the UN General Assembly at COP 28 in November this year.
He committed to fostering stronger partnerships between the ministry and higher education institutions for collaborative research. He emphasized that without such collaboration, achieving net-zero carbon emissions would be as uncertain as today’s unpredictable weather patterns.
Two individuals have tragically lost their lives during a shooting incident in Nsawam Adoagyiri, situated in the Eastern Region.
The unfortunate event unfolded within the context of an ongoing chieftaincy dispute in the area.
Of the four individuals who sustained gunshot wounds during the clash, the identities of the deceased remain undisclosed. Following the escalation of the chieftaincy conflict, the injured were swiftly transported to the Nsawam government hospital on Tuesday.
The preceding week saw a comparable incident where an individual suffered a gunshot wound, coinciding with the installation of a parallel chief for Nsawam Adoagyiri by certain members of the Abuakwa Traditional Council, accompanied by heavy police and military presence.
This action drew the ire of the local residents who remain loyal to Akyem Kotoku.
Sources reveal that Tuesday’s shooting episode occurred as Chief Barima Adu Korkoor III, the parallel chief, paraded through the main streets of Nsawam.
His procession followed his return from the Ofori Panin Fie in Kyebi, where he had undertaken an oath before the Okyehene and the Abuakwa Traditional Council subsequent to his recent enstoolment.
Although the police have initiated an investigation into the violent incident that led to the loss of two lives in the municipality, the community’s inhabitants are becoming increasingly apprehensive about their security.
Their concerns extend to the potential of retaliatory attacks exacerbating the situation. As a result, there is a growing call for swift intervention from the Ministry of National Security, the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and other pertinent stakeholders.
The Deputy Spokesperson for Alan Kyerematen’s campaign, Richard Nyamah, has expressed that the recent events during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) super delegates’ conference have served as a tough lesson for their team.
He emphasized that relying solely on the party’s leadership is no longer a viable strategy.
Nyamah pointed out that the party’s failure to promptly address widely reported electoral irregularities and incidents of violence, particularly the assault on an electoral agent from the Alan campaign team, sends a clear signal that they must fend for themselves.
In response, he stated that their faction has decided to no longer place unwavering trust in the party’s leadership. Instead, they are taking proactive measures to safeguard their interests in preparation for the upcoming November 4 polls.
Speaking on JoyFM, he said, “What we have learnt from this very conduct is that we would have to be our own keeper. We will be prepared and ready on November 4th. We are not going to put our faith in the party because they have shown us that they can’t be trusted.
“They will bring guidelines, the guidelines on the D-day are flouted across the country and nobody is interested in that. When you’re done they will take you through constitutional processes that end in nothing.
“So, we would make sure that we are ready physically, spiritually whatever way it is on the D-day. We’re not going to wait for anything to repeat itself and then we’ll go reporting and having investigations. It’s an aftereffect. The point is that fortunately, this is a learning curve, they have taught us the hard way.”
Mr. Nyamah has leveled accusations against the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), alleging that they are practicing selective justice.
He asserts that despite an incident in which a regional coordinator from the Alan Kyerematen campaign team was assaulted in Nalerigu, located in the North East region during the super delegates’ conference, the party has not taken any steps to support the victim or denounce the violence that transpired.
Nyamah contends that the party’s actions and inactions are conveying a distinct message that individuals associated with the Alan team are not welcome within the party.
He said, “Do you realise since this incident happened, it’s been four days? Have you heard or seen any condemnation officially from the NPP as a party? The NPP as a party has officially not reached out to us, not the agent that was beaten to pulp and his eye virtually bulged out, nobody has bothered because it doesn’t matter, it has happened to an Alan agent.”
Mr Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen has personally condemned the attack on his campaign coordinator.
The NPP flagbearer aspirant asserted that the party should not “put a shine on this kind of incident”, adding he was frankly disturbed by the incident.
Social commentator and youth activist, Ivan Kyei Innocent, has entreated President Akufo-Addo to change his ways, lest he become the worst president ever in the history of the country.
Ivan Kyei Innocent, during an interview on Onua TV’s Maakye Show, expressed his immense dissatisfaction with the running of the economy by the Akufo-Addo-led government.
He bemoaned the huge debt stock that has been accumulated by the government and the absence of a conducive environment that propels job creation.
Under the Akufo-Addo led government, he noted that Ghanaians have been worse off in comparison to any individual on the continent in the last five years.
“As a government, we vote for you to create job opportunities. Even creating the enabling environment for the private sector to create more jobs is a problem. This is a government that has not been able to create the capacity to take in people. But for the few that have been taken and are receiving meager salaries, he has weaned them off.
“It shows you that we don’t have a rational government. Sometimes, some of the decisions they make make you question their motivations. Look at the huge amounts of loans we have taken in the last five years, the whole of Africa, there is no single country that has done what Ghana has,” he said.
Ivan Kyei Innocent
He therefore noted that President Akufo-Addo risks having his name in the bad records of Ghanaians, which would transcend to future generations yet to come.
He noted that although Ghana’s first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, had no special backing, he was able to do so much for the country, for which he is still remembered.
“At the end of the day, what legacy are you leaving. If you couldn’t create jobs, what was your use then. What legacy are you leaving so that when people mention your name, something good is said. Nkrumah was never a magic child, but he has left a legacy that transcends generations.
“If you use the Tema Motorway, you’ll see his name. As President, the legacy you are leaving behind. Nana Akufo-Addo, if he is not careful, will become the most miserable former president in the history of this country.
“Because what citizens would use to remember him would be the huge debt he left. There will be nothing positive. With all this debt, what legacy are you leaving?” he said.
The Bank of Ghana’s January 2023 economic and financial data summary revealed that the debt stock increased by GH¢108.3 billion between September and November 2021. The external component of the country’s public debt shot up to GH¢382.7 billion in November 2022, equivalent to 62.1% of GDP.
Koa, a Ghanaian-Swiss start-up, has taken a significant step towards expanding its impact in the cocoa sector.
They recently inaugurated their second cocoa fruit factory located in Akim Achiase, in Ghana’s Eastern Region.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by 600 guests, including representatives from the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Swiss Embassy.
This new facility marks a major milestone for Koa, as it will enable them to increase their production capacity by tenfold. Additionally, it will facilitate cooperation with an additional 10,000 cocoa smallholders in Ghana.
Koa is making waves in the cocoa industry by introducing innovation through the upcycling of cocoa fruit. As an independent Ghanaian-Swiss company, they are pioneering a new value chain by utilizing cocoa pulp that was previously discarded. This initiative is a groundbreaking development in West Africa’s cocoa industry.
“Working closely with cocoa smallholders, Koa reduces on-farm food waste around the cocoa fruit, increases cocoa farmers’ income while at the same time bringing unique new ingredients to the gastronomy and food and beverage industry for applications ranging from chocolate, confectionery, ice cream to drinks in Ghana and abroad.
“Since its foundation in 2017, Koa has upcycled 800 tons of cocoa fruit that was, until that day, overlooked in the cocoa industry. 2,200 cocoa farmers benefitted within the first five years, earning a total of GHS 2.3 million (USD 300,000)”.
The inauguration of the cocoa fruit factory in Akim Achiase on August 25, 2023, signifies the dawn of a new chapter for Koa, as the company extends its influence and impact in the industry.
“It highlights the contribution of the company towards sustainable growth in rural Ghana and making a positive impact on the cocoa industry”.
Distinguished guests at the event included Kobina Tahir Hammond, the Minister of Trade & Industry of Ghana; Daasebre Nana Gyenin Kantan IV, Nifa Hene of Akyim Abuakwa Traditional Council; and Dr. Simone Haeberli, Deputy Head of Mission & Head of Cooperation at the Embassy of Switzerland in Ghana, Togo, and Benin.
They honored the occasion with their presence in Akim Achiase, situated in Ghana’s Eastern Region.
“Their participation signifies the importance of this milestone for Ghana and the cocoa industry.
In his welcome address, Koa’s Managing Director and Co-Founder, Anian Schreiber, highlighted how the new factory served as milestone in the company’s ambition to positively transform the cocoa value chain.
“By supplying products for both the domestic and international market, we will add value to the farmers, the communities and all people who work around here. This factory will connect Achiase and Ghana to the world”, Anian Schreiber said.
Daniel Otu, Production & Operations Director at Koa, explained that “the new factory will allow the company to grow in line with the demand from its customers. The factory will generate 250 new jobs in rural Ghana and allow us to extend our cocoa fruit upcycling to an additional 10,000 cocoa farmers.”
Koa, a start-up with Swiss-Ghanaian roots, is revolutionizing the cocoa industry through the innovative practice of upcycling typically neglected parts of the cocoa fruit.
Their primary goal is to empower farmers to generate additional income while simultaneously fostering a positive environmental impact. In essence, Koa is reshaping the cocoa industry’s approach to sustainability and social responsibility.
As a certified B Corporation, Koa has seamlessly woven its mission into every facet of its business operations, with a keen emphasis on the “Triple Bottom Line” concept, which encompasses the well-being of “People, Planet, and Profit.”
On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf announced that Algeria is putting forward a proposal to address the political turmoil in its neighboring country, Niger.
The proposal suggests a six-month transition period, overseen by a civilian leader, as a means of resolving the crisis.
Attaf, who recently toured West African states, said “most of the countries we have talked to are against military intervention to end the crisis”.
Last week, military chiefs from the West African ECOWAS bloc gathered in Ghana to discuss the potential for a military intervention in Niger. This comes after members of Niger’s presidential guard seized power last month and established a junta.
Algeria has consistently expressed its opposition to a military intervention, citing the turmoil that ensued after NATO’s involvement in Libya in 2011 during the uprising against long-standing leader Muammar Gaddafi.
In response to the coup, Algerian officials have engaged in three separate conversations with the Niger military leader, who is advocating for a transitional period lasting up to three years, according to Attaf.
As part of its proposed strategy, Algeria aims to convene a United Nations conference to reinstate constitutional order, suggest assurances for all parties involved in the crisis, and host a conference focusing on development in the Sahel region. These plans were outlined without going into further detail.
During the past week, Algerian state television reported that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had denied France permission for a potential military operation in Niger. However, France has refuted any claims of seeking such authorization.
Flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong arrived at the New Patriotic Party headquarters on Tuesday to meet with the Elections Committee.
According to sources, the purpose of this meeting is to provide him and other presidential candidates with an opportunity to address concerns related to the conduct of the special delegates’ conference.
During the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Special Delegates’ Conference, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerged as the winner with 629 votes, accounting for 68.15% of the total vote.
Kennedy Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, secured the second position with 132 votes, representing 14.30%, while former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen came in third with 95 votes, or 10.29%.
Additionally, Mr. Agyapong is expected to meet with the disciplinary committee to address claims he made targeting President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during the Special Delegates Conference held on Saturday.
In a widely circulated video, Mr. Agyapong, who also serves as the Assin Central Member of Parliament, was seen making threats against the two leaders in response to alleged attacks on his agents.
He was heard saying, “President Akufo-Addo, I will give you a showdown in this country, I swear to God. Vice President, I will give you a showdown for chasing my agent away. I swear to God. You will hear what will happen here. I swear to God, I will challenge President Akufo-Addo big time.”
According to the party, Mr Kennedy Agyapong, will be summoned before the disciplinary committee to “provide responses and further details to the accusations and threats he made against certain personalities in a video that has since gone viral on social media and mainstream media.”
The NPP says it is looking at potential violations of the provisions outlined in Article 3(5)(A) of the Party’s Constitution and a potential misconduct under Article 4(7).”
Article 4(7) notes that a “Member shall be disqualified from holding any office or contesting any election in the Party if he or she is not of good standing.”
The leadership of the party has pledged that disciplinary process will be conducted with fairness, transparency, and impartiality.
The planned protest organized by the Ghana Hotels Association aimed at addressing the issue of high utility tariffs has been temporarily postponed due to the denial of protection by the police.
Originally, the Ghana Hotels Association had intended to conduct a march through the streets of Accra as a means to voice their concerns regarding the exorbitant utility tariffs.
The decision to protest arose from a significant 167% increase in water tariffs that occurred in February 2023, placing a considerable financial burden on numerous hotels throughout the region.
Despite their persistent efforts to engage with the PURC and advocate for a re-evaluation of the tariff situation, they have not achieved any concrete results.
The Association has expressed its intention to continue negotiations with the police in pursuit of a resolution, emphasizing that their objective is a revision of utility tariffs and not the pursuit of any violent demands.
They have also stated that if police protection continues to be denied, they will explore alternative means to make their voices heard.
President of the Ghana Hotels Association, Dr Edward Ackah-Nyamike addressing the press indicated that “our particular issue is with the adjustment that was done in February that increased the tariff that is our focus and that has created debts for the hotels. So we want that one to be reversed to what it was. Reverse it first and then do the 8.3 per cent and if you can now talk about new rates, that’s a whole different ball game.
“Our focus is not on the new adjustment that is starting from the 1st even though that is a discussion for another day because it means that the rates are high. So either way there is an issue.”
The police officers implicated by former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, in a leaked tape on the ousting of Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, will appear before Parliament on Thursday, August 31, 2023.
This information was revealed by Chairman of the adhoc committee set up by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to probe the leaked audio tape, Samuel Atta Akyea in an engagement with the media.
The said officers summoned by Parliament are COP George Alex Mensah, Superintendent Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Gyebi.
“These are the three individuals who will appear on Thursday,” Mr Atta Akyea told Citi FM.
According to Bugri Naabu, Commander Asare threatened his life when he reached out to find out how their conversation was leaked.
Bugri Naabu said he phoned the Commander who on several occasions refused to make any comments.
“I called Mr Asare and asked him who sent the tape into the public domain, and he banged the phone on me. Then I called him again and he refused to talk to me,” Bugri Naabu is quoted to have said by Ghanaweb.
Bugri Naabu informed Parliament that he later received a message by Commander Asare from his son. Per his comments, the Commander threatened his life over the leaked audio tape.
“But rather, he sent a message through my son, that he will deal with me, he threatened me,” Bugri Naabu.
According to Bugri Naabu, he only sent the audio to President Akufo-Addo.
Chairman of the adhoc committee set up by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to probe the leaked audio tape plotting the ouster of Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, believes the committee is making headway in its investigations.
This comes after the summoning and subsequent interrogation of former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, by the committee on Monday, August 28.
He admitted that one of the voices heard in the leaked tape was his and further revealed the identities of the individuals he was engaging. They are COP George Alex Mensah, Superintendent Asare and Superintendent Emmanuel Gyebi.
Reacting to this development in an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, the Committee’s chair, Samuel Atta Akyea described Bugri Naabu’s statement as a “positive judicial confession.”
Judicial confession is a plea of guilty made by the accused in a fit state of mind to plead, before a court that is competent to try him for the offense charged and which, upon the entry of the plea, is competent to enter judgment and fix the penalty.
According to Samuel Atta Akyea, Bugri Naabu’s confession is sufficient for the Committee to work with in its investigation.
“This is what they call a positive judicial confession. What more do you need? A man affirms on oath that this is my voice on tape, I did the recording, and the individual voices who were with me are the following. I think that this is the basic material that we are going to work with.”
He, however, noted that Bugri Naabu’s narration could not be taken without engaging the cited parties to confirm or refute the claims.
As such, Parliament will on Thursday engage the officers being implicated by the former NPP Chair for the Northern Region.
“Our next sitting is on Thursday. COP George Alex Mensah will appear, Superintendent Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Gyebi will also appear. These are the three individuals who will appear on Thursday,” he added.
Former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, has alleged that one of the police officers in the tape recording with evidence of a plot to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare; one Commander Asare, has threatened his life.
Daniel Bugri Naabu appeared before an adhoc committee set up by Speaker Alban Bagbin on August 28, and during his testimony, he noted that he had recorded his conversation with the officers and shared the tape with President Akufo-Addo.
He stated that he only shared the audio with the president in order to save the party and provide evidence on plans being made by some officers to oust the IGP.
However, to his surprise, the audio reached the public domain, and he decided to reach out to Commander Asare over the matter.
In his attempt to obtain information, Bugri Naabu said he phoned the Commander who on several occasions refused to make any comments.
But to his utter surprise, he received a threat passed on to him by his son.
“But rather, he sent a message through my son, that he will deal with me, he threatened me,” Bugri Naabu said.
It is expected that Parliament will further its probing to get to the bottom of the issue and ensure those found culpable are sanctioned.
As part of its investigations, it is expected that Parliament will invite the police officers cited by Bugri Naabu for questioning.
Parliament’s probing into a leaked audio tape hovering around an alleged plot to depose the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, has provided more striking revelations.
A Former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chief Daniel Bugri Naabu, whose voice has now be confirmed as being part of the audio, appeared before the adhoc committee set up by the Speaker of Parliament, to investigate the matter.
During interrogations, Chief Naabu revealed that amongst the several things the other two voices in the audio said about the IGP, it came up that Dr Dampare is reportedly still an active member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Chief Naabu explains the content of the audio, named one Commander Asare as the individual who presented a plan to remove Dry Damapre from office because of his supposed NDC alliance.
“Commander Asare said the IGP is not with the government or the NPP, and if we want to use the IGP for 2024 elections, we cannot ‘break the eight’ because this IGP will let us lose the election because he is an NDC (sympathiser).
“This is because the IGP was promoted so many times during the NDC era, still goes for NDC meetings and former President John Mahama has promised to maintain him if he (Mahama) wins the 2024 elections,” Bugri Naabu is quoted to have said.
Mr Naabu named Commander Asare and Commissioner of Police (COP) Mensah as two of the police officers who visited his office, located directly opposite the Osu Police Station in Accra, to discuss the possible removal of the IGP.
Daniel Bugri Naabu was summoned by Parliament after it was reported that he was among the voices heard in the leaked tape.
Upon interrogation by the Committee chaired by Member of Parliament for Akim Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, Daniel Bugri Naabu clarified that his conversation with some police officers concerned about how the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would retain power with the IGP still in power, was recorded by an individual he had tasked.
Per the leaked tape, it was established that some police officers were concerned that with the presence of the IGP, the NPP would be unable to break the eight year cycle of governance.
“Alhaji, my only problem… this current IGP if we do a mistake and take him to the elections, it will not help us. It will not help us at all and I will not mind if the position is not given to me but that man is changed; because he will not help us, he will not help us at all… he won’t help the party at all.
“I know there are others who are also good for this position, if I don’t get and this man is changed and those people that we think they are our men get I (it is ok)… Because we need to break this 8. That is important, we need to break the 8… Because I wouldn’t want doctor to become the flagbearer and then we lose the elections… ” a voice was heard saying.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), is the head of the Ghana Police Service. The IGP is appointed by the President of Ghana in accordance with the Constitution. The IGP heads the Police Management Board (POMAB).
Technical Advisor to the Vice President, Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, has contended that the massive support received by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in his bid to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 election is a result of his conduct rather than his privileged position as Vice President.
Dr. Mahama dismissed the notion that Dr. Bawumia’s influence as Vice President was the primary basis for the support from government appointees. He asserted that Dr. Bawumia has conducted himself admirably within the government and treats his colleagues with respect.
During an interview with JoyNews on Tuesday, August 29, Dr. Mahama expressed his objection to the assertion that those supporting the Vice President lack independent thinking.
“It is insulting for the government appointees for people to say that it is because they are appointees that is why they are supporting Dr Bawumia when other members of the government are supporting other candidates and no one is attributing it to any influence. So for me, if we want to be fair, we should be fair to all sides. But it would be demeaning and insulting to say that people are supporting Dr Bawumia because they are government appointees.”
“Any advantage Dr Bawumia is getting from these appointees is based on how he has conducted himself and if he had not done so, I am sure many of these appointees wouldn’t have gone for him. So if there is any advantage he is getting, it is how he has carried himself in government that makes people believe that he is the best person to lead us into the future of the party.”
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerged as the leading candidate in the New Patriotic Party’s Super Delegates Congress. This congress was organized to select five presidential aspirants who will compete in the party’s primaries in November.
Out of the 10 candidates who submitted their forms to contest the primary elections scheduled for November 4, Dr. Bawumia secured the highest percentage of votes after the compilation of results from 16 of the 17 polling centers across the nation. He received 67.10% of the total votes cast, with Kennedy Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, coming in second with 14.15% of the total votes cast.
President Akufo-Addo has affirmed government’s commitment to improving Ghana’s security infrastructure to withstand and protect the country from possible terrorist attacks.
Delivering a speech at the inauguration of the International Maritime and Exhibition Conference held at Burma Camp, the president noted that one of government’s concerns is Ghana’s territorial waters.
As such, the Navy is being provided the necessary machinery to be armed to the teeth to protect the maritime domain, the president stated.
According to President Akufo-Addo, “the government recognises the need for a well-resourced and technologically advanced Navy” and has therefore provided the following equipment; “drones, coastal radars, real-time surveillance, and tracking protocols.”
President Akufo-Addo emphasized Ghana’s susceptibility to terrorist attacks due to the proximity of terrorist activities in neighboring countries.
Burkina Faso, which shares the northern border with Ghana, has been heavily hit by terrorist attacks.
On August 6, Twenty people were killed in Burkina Faso in an attack by suspected jihadists in Nohao, near the town of Bittou, in the Center-East region bordering Togo.
More than 16,000 civilians, troops and police have died in terror attacks, according to an NGO count, including more than 5,000 since the start of this year.
More than 2 million people have also been displaced within their country, making it one of the worst internal displacement crises in Africa.
The trial of Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, who is accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend in Adum, has been postponed by the Kumasi High Court for the third time.
This adjournment came about after the principal state attorney requested more time to prepare and file necessary documents, including a witness statement.
Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, the primary suspect in the alleged shooting of Victoria Dapaah, made his third appearance in the Kumasi High Court.
Presiding over the case, Judge Rosemary Baah Tosu granted the request and scheduled the next hearing for September 19, 2023. The suspect was remanded in prison custody.
On August 28, 2023, the suspect appeared in court again, but the state attorney sought additional time to compile trial documents.
The accused’s legal counsel agreed to the request, leading to the case’s adjournment to September 19, 2023, with the accused remaining in prison custody.
The alleged incident occurred on April 20, 2023, when the accused reportedly shot 27-year-old Victoria Dapaah in Adum, Kumasi. Following intelligence reports, the police apprehended Inspector Ahmed Twumasi on April 25, 2023, near Effiduase. He was subsequently arraigned before the Asokore Mampong district court and detained for further investigations.
Police investigations revealed that the suspect’s actions were motivated by a GHC 5,000 debt owed to him by the deceased.
The Asokore Mampong District Court, presided over by Buaben Asamoah Quansah, committed him to trial at Kumasi High Court 2 on charges of murder.
The Democratic Advocates Initiative (TDAI) has raised concerns over the conduct and remarks made by the US Ambassador in Ghana with regards to the country’s sexual practices.
TDAI points out that the US Ambassador’s position on LGBTQ+ rights stands in stark contrast to the perspectives held by Ghana’s Parliament, religious institutions, and prevailing societal norms.
The US Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, has warned that the passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill could affect trade and investment in the country.
Ambassador Palmer said that while a number of American companies are preparing to invest in Ghana, any law that discriminates against LGBTQ+ people could hurt the country’s reputation and make it less attractive to investors.
Speaking to journalists in Accra, Ambassador Palmer said: “Lots of ethnic communities make Ghana strong, stable, and attractive for investments. I hope it stays that way with regard to the LGBTQ community. They should be managed to be made the colour of the money green or red if it’s Ghanaian, but if it is discrimination, then that will send a signal not to [only] LGBTQ investors and exporters but to other American companies. Then Ghana will be less welcoming…so I hope it stays that welcoming.”
TDAI believes the Ambassador’s actions might suggest hidden agendas, which could potentially involve the distribution of aid packages camouflaged as humanitarian assistance.
According to the group, the US Ambassador must respect “Ghana’s citizens, values, and sovereignty.”

An unsuccessful flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Nsafoah Poku, has expressed contentment with the three votes he received during Saturday’s special delegates conference held nationwide.
Initially, Mr. Poku had expressed confidence in securing a spot among the top five contenders for the presidential nomination scheduled for November 4.
However, he received only three votes from the 955 delegates who participated in the NPP’s special delegates conference, effectively removing him from the flagbearer race.
During an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday, Mr. Poku expressed satisfaction with his three votes, pointing out that some delegates had cast their votes more than once.
“You know some people voted twice…I don’t vote, So some of the candidates who voted for themselves and also had a proxy voted twice. So if you look at my three votes…that for me is a plus.”
“But for my first votes, I think I have done well and I am very happy with myself,” he added.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has indicated that Diana Asamoah, a student of Nkwatia Presby Senior High School, who was abused by the Assistant Headmaster of Academics, is currently receiving medical care.
She is also receiving counselling, the GES communicated in a press statement dated Monday, August 28, 2023.
The extreme physical abuse by the assistant headteacher, per reports, has left one Diana Asamoah partially blind.
Per reports circulating on social media, the female student was slapped on the cheek and caned for leaving school without an exeat.
But sources say Diana received permission to leave school for being unwell, however, her explanation was not welcomed by the assistant headteacher, who then meted out his punishment.
According to the Ghana Education Service, it unequivocally condemns the actions of the Assistant Headmaster, who is supposed to ensure that students and teachers operate in a safe school environment.
It has therefore relieved the Assistant Headmaster of Academics at Nkwatia Presby Senior High School in the Eastern Region of his duties.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Director of Education is liaising with the school authorities and the relevant law enforcement agency to investigate the matter.
President Akufo-Addo has given assurance that the second phase of the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) initiative will generate an annual average of 210,000 new jobs directly related to farming.
Furthermore, the President noted that these new jobs will not only be limited to farming but will also encompass various positions within the agricultural value chains.
President Akufo-Addo made this announcement during the launch of the second phase of the Planting for Food and Jobs program in Tamale on Monday, August 28.
He emphasized that this upcoming phase of the program is aimed at enhancing food security and creating employment opportunities.
“The impact of the Programme is expected to be in the area of job creation, with some one-point-two million (1.2 million) farmers to be enrolled in the first year. In the next four (4) years, the Programme is destined to record an annual average of two hundred and ten thousand (210,000) new farm-related jobs,” the president said.
This will not encompass other jobs along the agricultural value chains, which are projected to average around four hundred and twenty thousand annually during the same period, President Akufo-Addo confirmed.
He further highlighted that the second phase of the Program is also aimed at enhancing service delivery to optimize its effects.
“The second phase, by design, takes a holistic view and places greater emphasis on value chain approaches by focusing on strengthening linkages between actors along eleven selected agricultural commodity value chains broadly categorised into grains, roots and tuber, vegetables and poultry.
Phase Two of the Programme also seeks to improve service delivery to maximise impact, substitutes direct input subsidy with smart agricultural financial support in the form of comprehensive input credit, with provision for in-kind payment,” the President indicated.
On April 19, 2017, President Akufo-Addo inaugurated the inaugural “Planting for Food and Jobs” program in Goaso, situated in the Ahafo region.
This initiative marked a pivotal step by the government towards the modernization of agriculture, the enhancement of production efficiency, and the attainment of both food security and increased profitability for farmers.
The primary goal was to substantially boost agricultural productivity while concurrently pursuing a value-addition approach, with a focus on accelerating agro-processing and establishing new, stable markets.
Two new High Court Judges, both females, have been sworn into office and charged with the mandate to apply Ghana’s laws fairly, strictly, and without fear, favour or ill-will.
President Akufo-Addo on Monday, August 28, moderated the induction ceremony held a the Jubilee House, Accra.
The newly appointed judges, Justices Dorothy Ayodele Kingsly-Nyinah and Ama Sefenya Ayittey, took their oaths of allegiance, secrecy, and the judicial oath.
President Akufo-Addo asserted that the country’s development hinged on the Judiciary earning the respect of the people through the quality of justice delivery and the conduct of judges.
He then congratulated them on their appointments and encouraged them to set themselves apart in their roles by demonstrating honesty, integrity, and a solid grasp of the law.
The President expressed his disapproval of judges basing their judgments on lower court decisions and presenting them as legal precedents.
He found it even more unacceptable when judges made rulings without citing any legal authority. He urged the newly appointed judges to be well-versed in case law and ensure that their decisions and judgments were properly motivated.
Furthermore, President Akufo-Addo urged the judges to adjudicate cases without bias or partiality and always safeguard the fundamental rights of citizens.
He also charged them to be sensitive to undue delays that projected the image of Ghana as a destination where litigation took too long, stressing that “This affects the attractiveness of the country as an investment destination.”
The President urged the judges to leverage the capabilities of technology to promote the rule of law, ensuring that they maintain the trust of the Ghanaian populace and bolster the country’s standing as a nation governed by principles of the rule of law.
“We know that harnessing the power of technology to advance the rule of law is critical in this modern era, if we are to maintain the confidence of the Ghanaian people and shore-up our nations reputation as a country governed by the rule of law.
“I encourage both of you to take full advantage of the E-justice system in order to expedite the conduct of cases that comes before you and enhance the management of cases before the court,” he said.
The World Bank Group has pledged $27.7 million to support Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in increasing its annual active membership and streamlining claims processing and payments for primary healthcare providers.
These primary healthcare providers include community-based health planning and services (CHPS), health centers, and maternity homes operating under the Primary Health Care Improvement Programme for Results.
The program is set to run for four years, spanning from 2022 to 2025. Funding will be provided through a World Bank facility with co-financing grants from the Global Financing Facility, Canada, the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Operation, and the Gavi Alliance.
Funding allocations will be based on the achievement of Disbursement Linked Results, as per the program’s Disbursement Linked Indicators (DLIs). These DLIs encompass objectives such as increasing NHIS membership, boosting the enrollment of vulnerable populations in the Scheme, and enhancing claims processing and payments for primary healthcare facilities.
According to a statement from the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Technical Working Group, led by Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, the Chief Executive, and shared with the Ghana News Agency following their meeting with the World Bank Group, the facility aims to enhance several aspects of healthcare provider accreditation, monitoring, and financing of primary healthcare services through collaboration between NHIA, the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, and the Health Facility Regulatory Authority.
Furthermore, the NHIA will work closely with the Social Protection Directorate of the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection to increase the enrollment of indigent populations, including the disabled, orphans, widows, women, and children, in the NHIS.
“This will be done through linkage with the National Household Registry which is also supported by the World Bank,” it stated.
“The ‘New NHIS’ leadership’s ultimate goal is building a more resilient Health Insurance Scheme that responds to the needs of all by providing access to quality and affordable healthcare services on a sustainable basis,” it said.
The statement outlined that the Executive Management’s approach to realizing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) involves the implementation of ‘pro-poor pathway’ initiatives, firmly rooted within the legal framework mandating every Ghanaian to enroll in the NHIS.
Additionally, it noted that the NHIA Chief Executive, along with his deputies and select directors, had conducted a nationwide tour of all 16 regions. This initiative aimed to foster closer ties with both staff and the general public and engage in discussions on ways to fortify the NHIS, emphasizing its pivotal role as a vehicle for Ghana’s journey towards achieving UHC.
“Leadership is determined to open more offices in strategic locations to make the NHIS accessible to all. Some additional offices recently commissioned are the Western North Regional Office, Bono East Regional Office, Ahafo Regional Office, Dormaa East, Jamaan North, Asunafo North, Asutifi North, Obuasi, Asawase, Atwima Kwanwoma, Ejisu, Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem (KEEA) Mion, Kumbungu, and Nanton,” it said.
The statement also reported that newly branded operational vehicles had been provided to Bono East, Sunyani Municipal, Jaman South, Kintampo Municipal, and Techiman Municipal.
It further highlighted that the NHIS had evolved into a crucial instrument for financing healthcare delivery in Ghana. Notably, it served as the financial backbone for over 4,600 accredited healthcare service providers, with more than 80 percent of internally generated funds for many healthcare facilities coming from the Scheme.
The statement acknowledged the valuable support received from development partners, including the World Bank Group, World Health Organization (WHO), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF), and the Korea Foundation for International HealthCare (KOFIH), among others. This support had positioned Ghana’s NHIS as an exemplary social protection model in Africa, evidenced by the numerous foreign delegations that have visited the NHIA to study its operations.
Furthermore, the statement emphasized the significance of the recent financial support from the World Bank Group, considering it essential and well-timed in the NHIA’s pursuit of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by the year 2030.
The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, has announced that the government’s second phase of the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) initiative aims to achieve food self-sufficiency for the country within the next five years.
On Monday, August 28, 2023, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo inaugurated the second phase of the government’s prominent agricultural initiative, PFJ, at the University for Development Studies in Tamale.
Following the launch, the Agric Minister expatiated on the gains that would accrue from the government’s initiative during an engagement on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News.
According to Mr Acheampong, the key focus of the initiative would be on the dietary needs of Ghanaians such as the cultivation of onions, tomatoes, grains among others.
“For grains, we are looking at maize, soya, rice and sorghum and for plantain tubers and roots, we are looking at plantain itself, cassava, yam and then, we are also focusing on one protein which is poultry and the focus on poultry will be broiler,” he added.
The cultivation of such crops in a period of five years, he said, would make Ghana food reliant and also provide the country the opportunity to grow the exportation of such food items.
“We are clear in our mind that with these 10 crops and poultry with the five-year development plan that have developed, we have a new marking scheme that we are setting for ourselves as a country. We should be food self-sufficient in tomato, onion, pepper, rice, maize, cassava, legumes, and yam, plantain. We should, in five years, be self-sufficient and be able to export these crops and poultry,” he said.
Increased investment in the cultivation of vegetables such as onions has become essential as Ghana now suffers the brunt of the Niger coup. Owing to the military takeover and the volatility of security in the West African subregion, countries such as Benin, Burkina Faso have closed their borders, making transportation of onions and other commodities difficult.
Recent reports indicate that Ghanaian traders in the onion business are at a loss due to the destruction of their commodities by suspected terrorists and their inability to move their goods easily due to the closure of borders. About 350 bags of onions meant for the Kwadaso Market last two weeks have perished due to the delay in delivery.
Planting for Food and Jobs
Designed to build upon the achievements of the initial program, the second phase of this initiative is a comprehensive five-year master plan aimed at revolutionizing agriculture in Ghana. It places a strong emphasis on modernization, achieved through the advancement of selected commodity value chains and active engagement of the private sector.
Speaking at the launch, President Akufo-Addo stated that the second phase, by design, “takes a holistic view and places greater emphasis on value chain approaches by focusing on strengthening linkages between actors along eleven selected agricultural commodity value chains broadly categorised into grains, roots and tuber, vegetables and poultry.”
Additionally, in phase two of the program, there is a focus on enhancing service delivery to maximize its effectiveness.
This involves replacing direct input subsidies with intelligent agricultural financial support, which includes comprehensive input credit options and provisions for in-kind payments.
The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has affirmed its commitment to addressing the concerns raised by aspirants following the party’s super delegates conference held on Saturday.
One of the flagbearer aspirants, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, was recorded making a phone call where he expressed his intention to confront the President and Vice President after receiving reports of his representatives facing challenges in the North East Region.
Issues were also reported in various locations across the country, including allegations from Alan Kyerematen’s team that the Vice President’s team was providing upscale accommodations to delegates in the Greater Accra region, possibly in an attempt to influence votes.
However, during an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, the NPP’s Director of Elections and Research, Evans Nimako, characterized the polls as generally successful, attributing this success to extensive dialogue conducted by the party prior to the conference.
Nimako further revealed that the party convened on Monday to deliberate on the matters arising from the conference and assured that all concerned parties would have the opportunity to voice their grievances, with a commitment to resolving all issues amicably.
“What we went through on Saturday was successful because the Elections Committee equally engaged the aspirants. The party also met today and we are extending invitations to all the candidates so that we can have the issues that came up resolved.
“The committee is not in a hurry to pass judgment but we are ready to listen to all sides and record their concerns and act according to the party’s constitution. We have always engaged and we have extended invitations to all those with concerns before we submit our final report to the party.”
A political scientist at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has expressed skepticism regarding the potential repetition of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) super delegates conference outcome in the upcoming November primaries.
He believes that the results of the recently concluded super delegates conference will hold little significance in the forthcoming party primaries, where all grassroots members will participate in the voting process.
Dr. Asah-Asante shared his viewpoint during a discussion on JoyNews’ PM Express, focusing on the implications of the NPP Super delegates’ verdict for the final vote in November.
He emphasized the importance of the proposed composition for the November 4th primaries, which is expected to involve over 200,000 participants.
Dr. Asah-Asante noted that this extensive representation could lead to a different outcome compared to what was observed during the super delegates conference.
While he acknowledged the current stage as a constructive initial step, he cautioned against assuming that the status quo would persist until the November primaries.
“What we have seen is okay for the first step but you cannot rest on it to conclude that the status quo will remain. You’ll be surprised because they are expanding the electoral body bringing in all manner of people who will change the dynamics.
“So I believe that we are not going to have the same situation. Anything can happen. That is a fact,” he said.
Dr. Asah-Asante emphasized that the results of the Super Delegates Conference should not be viewed as conclusive predictors of the eventual nominee’s success.
He argued that numerous factors, extending well beyond the conference itself, would significantly influence the future leadership of the party.
“Among the five, each of them is capable of winning and it depends on a number of factors. How well you coordinate your activities, how well you churn out your messages and make sure that they resonate with the people, and how well you are in terms of your ability to articulate clearly, your policies and programs among others. So it is a whole mix of factors that will likely come into play.”
Ghana’s rising star, Ernest Nuamah, is set to make his official debut for Olympic Lyon this week, as confirmed by manager Laurent Blanc.
Last week, the talented Black Stars winger arrived in France to finalize his transfer to the prestigious French club during the ongoing transfer window. However, the announcement of his transfer has faced a slight delay.
Initially, it was reported that Nuamah would join Lyon on loan with an obligation to buy at the end of the season, a move aimed at helping Lyon balance their financial books.
Nuamah has been absent from FC Nordsjaelland’s lineup for the past three matches, signaling his impending move to Lyon. Despite this, there has been no official confirmation from the involved parties regarding the transfer.
Manager Laurent Blanc has now confirmed the deal, revealing that Nuamah is already part of the Lyon squad and is eagerly awaiting the formal announcement.
“He’s already in Lyon. I think [this] week he’ll officially be a Lyon player,” the French manager said when asked about the 19-year-old after the league game against OGC Nice on Sunday evening.
“He is a player that will bring what he’s capable of bringing. He is a player with a lot of power. He is a young player, a very young player, but he also brings us a bit of competition. Bringing competition to every position is a good thing for everyone. The more competition, the better things will be.”
The winger, thanks to his outstanding performance for FC Nordjaelland last season, clinched three prestigious awards. He was honored as the Danish Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, and Player of the Spring.
Nuamah’s remarkable displays on the field have garnered attention from several other clubs in recent weeks. This includes notable teams like Paris Saint Germain, Tottenham Hotspur, Ajax Amsterdam, and Burnley.
Former boss of the Ghana Maritime Authority, Kwame Owusu, has refuted claims linking him to the outburst of emotions exhibited by New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Kennedy Agyapong, during the Super Delegates Conference on August 26, 2023.
Over the weekend, the Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, was captured on camera promising to deliver “a showdown” to President Akufo-Addo and his vice, Dr. Bawumia after his polling agent was allegedly chased into a room by angry delegates.
According to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, alias Chairman Wontumi, Kwame Owusu phoned Kennedy Agyapong and provided him false information.
In an interview with Metro TV, Chairman Wontumi said: “Something happened in the Northern Region and the people who were there just called Kennedy to tell him, it was specifically my uncle, Kwame Owusu… he called Kennedy and you know at a time like this his energy will be high.” And you are not there but called him to say this what has happened, meanwhile we have police and agents there, so, why do you have to talk?”
But engaging the public in a press briefing on Monday, August 28, Mr Owusu noted that Chairman Wontumi’s claims are unfounded as the time he reported at the polling station at the Law Faculty in the Ashanti Region does not correlate with the time Kennedy Agyapong was provided the said information.
He explained that Mr Agyapong was informed of the anomaly in the morning whereas Chairman Wontumi arrived at noon.
“It has been on social media an interview granted by one Otchere where the Chairman of the Ashanti Region of the NPP, was interviewed and he claims that it is one Owusu, a campaign manager who actually misinformed Ken of the events that were happening in the North East Region, the Region of the Vice President.
“I want to put this straight that Chairman Wontumi lied. Honourable Ken’s message was captured in the morning and the call was placed to him at 10:39. And from the records, he and the lady spoke for about two and half minutes.
“I was an agent at the Ashanti Region, Law faculty. Chairman Wontumi came in there 12’o clock. How could he have heard that I was the one reporting the matter to Hon Ken when even the incident was about an hour before he even came to the premises.
It is untrue the records are all there. He is there, telling I am the one who misinformed and the person wasn’t even an agent and was there to cause trouble,” he said.
He added: “Chairman Wontumi, I don’t know. I was on the phone with our agent who was there telling him not to sign the pink sheet when all was done on the basis that the elections was supposed to be held outdoor. It was held in door. The happening could not be reported. Nobody was supposed to vote and raising the ballot paper and they were taking place. We had a report from our lady that when she challenged that, she went out and was interviewed by TV3 and was also being chased out, so she had to run away from the place.”
Meanwhile, Mr Kennedy Agyapong has been summoned before the NPP disciplinary committee to “provide responses and further details to the accusations and threats he made against certain personalities in a video that has since gone viral on social media and mainstream media.”
The campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong addressed the public today on a controversial comment made by the aspirant during the party’s Super Delegate Conference held on Saturday, August 26, 2023.
The Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, was captured on camera promising to deliver “a showdown” to President Akufo-Addo and his vice, Dr. Bawumia after his polling agent was allegedly chased into a room by angry delegates.
According to the party, Mr Kennedy Agyapong, will be summoned before the disciplinary committee to “provide responses and further details to the accusations and threats he made against certain personalities in a video that has since gone viral on social media and mainstream media.”
Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, has shown disinterest in the merger between Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen.
Prior to the just-ended Super Delegates Conference, Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, subscribed to the idea of Mr Kyerematen being the running mate of Vice President Dr Bawumia.
But he has changed his stance following the results of the conference held on Saturday, August 16, 2023.
Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia won the super delegates conference held on Saturday, August 26th, with a total of 629 votes, representing 68.15% of the total valid votes.
Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong came in second with 132 votes, while former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen placed third with 95 votes.
According to Chairman Wontumi, the ability of Ken Agyapong to secure the second position, which many thought would be held by Alan Kyerematen makes him best suited to battle the National Democratic Congress (NDC) alongside the Vice President.
He said: “Kennedy is (an) asset and that’s why when I mentioned four people, I mention his name before mine. Everybody is an asset, but if Alan didn’t contest, we wouldn’t be here.
“Then we were talking about Bawumia-Alan but now that Kennedy is second, we are going to talk about Bawumia-Kennedy That is the truth.”
The Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) and the Technical University Senior Administrators’ Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) branches at Bolga Technical University (BTU) are currently engaged in a strike.
This labor action has been triggered by the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the institution’s attempts to modify certain aspects of their approved conditions of service, as sanctioned by the Ministry of Finance.
In a joint press statement dated August 25, 2023, and signed by executives of both TUTAG and TUSAAG, the staff clarified that the Vice-Chancellor is relying on claims of ambiguity within the “Technical Universities Act (2016) Act 922 as Amended” to disadvantage them.
“We strongly reject our VC’s absurd interpretation of our conditions of service where he seeks to departmentalise the payment of our retirement benefits for our retirees by paying only three months salary for the number of years served under the polytechnic and then one month salary for every year served effective only after 2031”.
“We insist that any TUTAG or TUSAAG member who served for continuous 10 years under the erstwhile polytechnic system automatically qualifies as an accrued right to enjoy this retirement benefit as pertains in other technical universities” the Associations added.
TUTAG and TUSAAG further stated that their position is supported by section 42 (6) of the Technical Universities Act (2016), Act 922 as amended which states that “ A person in the employment of a polytechnic in existence immediately before the coming into force of this Act, shall be deemed to have been duly employed by the respective Technical University established under this Act on the terms and conditions attached to the post held by that person before the coming into force of this Act”.
The group is therefore demanding the immediate payment of the “internal component of the Online Teaching Support Allowance (OTSA) and its accrued arrears for teaching staff that have not paid since January 2022”.
Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, claims to have told Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, of his fate in the Super Delegates Conference even before voting began.
Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia won the super delegates conference held on Saturday, August 26th, with a total of 629 votes, representing 68.15% of the total valid votes.
Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong came in second with 132 votes.
According to Mr Boasiako also known as Chairman Wontumi, he had made Kennedy Agyapong aware of being ranked second before the race began.
“Kennedy, the time I was coming. I told him he will be second. I spoke to Kennedy today. He is my brother. I told him he will be second and to me, he is my brother and I will always say the truth,” he said.
Speaking to Good Evening Ghana’s host, Paul Adom-Otchere, Chairman Wontumi noted that the best decision for Kennedy Agyapong would have been for him to run as the Vice President’s running mate.
“He should have looked for running mate because Bawumia will beat him,” he said.

A parliamentary committee established to investigate allegations regarding a leaked tape implying government intentions to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has issued a stern warning against any attempts to obstruct or delay their investigative process.
This warning comes in the wake of the absence of the initial witness, Bugri Naabu, former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), due to health issues, which resulted in the postponement of the committee’s inaugural session last Thursday.
As a result, the committee was compelled to reschedule proceedings for today, Monday, August 28, 2023.
The committee’s Chairman, Samuel Atta-Akyea, stressed the importance of adhering to the committee’s set timetable. He emphasized that witnesses should prioritize respecting the committee’s schedule and be prepared to appear when summoned.
Mr. Atta-Akyea underscored the significance of punctuality and cooperation, acknowledging the committee members’ dedication to ensuring the smooth conduct of proceedings.
“We expect all those summoned to appear before the committee to recognise the value of time,” Atta-Akyea stated.
He emphasized once again the committee’s commitment to conducting a fair and impartial investigation, dispelling any suggestions of a witch-hunt and reaffirming the integrity of all committee members.
The establishment of the seven-member committee by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, aims to thoroughly examine the allegations within the leaked tape. These allegations suggest that the government intends to remove the Inspector General of Police as part of an alleged plot to manipulate the 2024 elections.
The committee is composed of individuals with diverse expertise, including legal specialist Dr. Isaac Lartey Annan, who possesses a deep understanding of human rights issues.
The committee’s mandate encompasses verifying the authenticity of the tape and investigating the claims it contains. Additionally, the committee is entrusted with formulating recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.
The proactive stance taken by the committee underscores their dedication to upholding transparency and accountability throughout the investigative process.
Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, holds the assertion that he is among the few popular faces in the party.
According to him, the NPP has four popular people and one of the slots is occupied by the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
The other two individuals are President Akufo-Addo and Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong.
He made this assertion in an interview with Good Evening Ghana’s host, Paul Adom-Otchere, following the just-ended Super Delegates Conference.
“You see, NPP, we have the most popular people. Nana Akufo-Addo, Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong and me myself. We are the most popular people. It is either you like it or not,” he said.
He added: “So if these four people, you are competing with them, you should be careful.”
He made this statement in reference to advice provided to presidential aspirant, Alan Kyerematen by Majority Leader Osei-Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
Ahead of the elections, the Majority Leader entreated the former Trade Minister to withdraw from the presidential race as support the Vice President as his running mate, but Mr Kyerematen declined.
At the end of super delegates conference, Dr Bawumia polled a significant number of votes cast.
“The time Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu was giving offer, if you had accepted, people like us would have followed. Sometimes it’s not just about you but the people who follow you. What they are saying is what has now happened,” Chairman Wontumi said.
Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia won the super delegates conference held on Saturday, August 26th, with a total of 629 votes, representing 68.15% of the total valid votes.
Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong came in second with 132 votes while former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen placed third with 95 votes.
