  • Man Utd releases Mason Greenwood

    Man Utd releases Mason Greenwood

Manchester United has officially confirmed the departure of young striker Mason Greenwood following the conclusion of its internal investigation.

Greenwood, who is 21 years old, has been suspended from the club since January 2022 when he faced charges of rape and engaging in controlling and coercive behavior based on allegations made by his girlfriend.

The charges were subsequently dropped earlier this year due to the withdrawal of key witnesses, and Greenwood had even returned to individual training.

Last week, The Athletic reported that the club was considering reinstating the young forward, which generated backlash from a portion of the fans.

In a statement issued on Monday, Manchester United announced that they have reached an agreement with Greenwood to part ways mutually.

    Club’s full statement

Manchester United has concluded its internal investigation into the allegations made against Mason Greenwood.

Our process commenced in February 2023, following all charges against Mason being dropped. Throughout, we have taken into account the wishes, rights and perspective of the alleged victim along with the club’s standards and values, and sought to collate as much information and context as possible. This has required us to proceed with sensitivity and care to obtain evidence not in the public domain, including from those with direct knowledge of the case.

Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged. That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for.

All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.

Minority sets September 5 to protest against BoG Governor, notifies Police

The Minority in Parliament, in conjunction with Civil Society Organizations, Progressive Forces, and other concerned citizens, has scheduled a demonstration against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, and his two deputies for Tuesday, September 5.

The Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, made this known in a press statement dated August 21, 2023.

According to Dr Ato Forson, the Minority has submitted a letter to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, dated Monday, August 21, outlining the caucus’s intention to hold a demonstration.

The protest is prompted by the alleged unauthorized printing of over GH¢80 billion by the central bank for the Akufo-Addo government.

“We write in line with sections ,1 2&3 of the Public Order Act 1994 (Act 491), to notify you of an impending public protest to be embarked upon by the Minority in Parliament in collaboration with Civil Society Organizations, Progressive Forces and other well-meaning Ghanaians.”

“The purpose of this protest is to express our revulsion against the illegal printing of money (about GH¢ 80 billion) between 2021 and 2022 by BoG for the corrupt Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government which led to a hyper-inflation rate of 54.1% in December 2022,” excerpts of the letter said.

According to the Minority, the Central Bank, by so doing, has pushed some 850,000 Ghanaians into poverty.

“This singular act of BOG has negatively impacted livelihoods and businesses and pushed about 850,000 Ghanaians into poverty in the year 2022 alone.”

“As representatives of the Ghanaian people, the Minority in Parliament is totally disgusted by the crass mismanagement and reckless mishandling of the affairs of the Bank of Ghana, which resulted in a gargantuan loss of GHC60.8 billion and a negative equity of GHCS5.1 billion in 2022, with its attendant hardships on Ghanaians,” the statement added.

In the meantime, Dr. Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), has clarified that the central bank only began providing funding to the government in 2020 and 2022, particularly during the COVID-19 Pandemic. This decision was made after investors in the capital market declined to lend to the government.

Dr. Addison emphasized that the central bank rigorously adhered to the principle of zero financing of government expenditure until economic challenges emerged last year. He noted that the financing of government policies in the previous year was carried out following prior consultation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“It is not true that the Bank of Ghana has been providing financing for government every year. There has been zero financing in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021. The Bank of Ghana has only had to support in the pandemic year of 2020, and in the crises year of 2022”, he stressed.

He pointed out that the BoG Act as amended limits financing of the government to 5 percent of the previous year’s tax revenue.

“This provision in the law has been adhered to since I took office in April, 2017, between 2017 and 2019. In addition to the requirement of the Act, the bank signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Finance to even impose the tighter restriction of zero Central Bank financing and this was observed strictly even though the MOU’s were not legally binding.”

  • Central Bank has not breached procurement laws in building $250m headquarters – Dr Addison

Central Bank has not breached procurement laws in building $250m headquarters – Dr Addison

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, has strongly asserted that the institution did not violate any procurement laws during the process of constructing a new headquarters for the Central Bank.

This statement from the BoG comes in response to concerns raised by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, regarding the increasing cost of the new headquarters situated in Ridge, Accra.

Ablakwa noted that the cost of the office had escalated “from an initial US$81.8 million to US$121 million and is currently threatening to exceed US$250 million.” He further alleged that the construction firm chosen for the project through a single-source Public Procurement Authority (PPA) process was not even a registered entity in the country.

In his response, Dr. Addison clarified the timeline and reasoning behind the decision to embark on the construction of the new head office. He explained that the choice to proceed with the construction was made in 2019, driven by the Bank’s profits at that time.

While acknowledging the concerns raised by the MP, Dr. Addison maintained that all actions taken were conducted within the boundaries of the law and adhered to proper procedures.

“The Bank of Ghana as far back as the 1990s began the search for suitable and secured land for a new Head office. In 2012, the Bank was allocated an unnumbered 5.19-acre land at Accra Central by the Lands Commission which also had issues. The Bank did not have access to the land since the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration refused to give the Bank vacant possession on the grounds that they had never agreed to give up ownership of the land. The Bank continued to search for suitable land for its Head Office throughout the period from 2013 to 2016. More recently in 2018, the Bank approached the SIC to acquire its vacant land at Ridge near the Ridge Hospital.

“The Government issued an Executive Instrument to allow the Bank of Ghana to acquire that Land and SIC was duly compensated. The Bank then began to plan the building of its new Head Office, taking into consideration the need to ensure the building meets all the requirements of a modern central bank of international standards (similar to central bank head office buildings in Abuja and Dakar), and includes provision for data centres, currency processes, vaults, and other sensitive installation. It is not just a simple ordinary building. Let me re-emphasize that the Bank followed all the necessary public procurement processes in this endeavour.

“No procurement laws were broken. I have requested that a more detailed response to the issues raised in the public discourse on the Bank’s new Head Office building be published on our website immediately after this press engagement today.

“The decision to commence construction was taken in 2019 when the Bank generated profits. Appropriations for the Head Office were made each year from profits in 2019, 2020, and 2021. The project has, therefore, been going on for over 3 years. The DDEP only took place in January 2023. If we were to be taking the decision today, building a legacy Head Office would not have been a priority.

“However, this is a project that has been running for 3 years and about 50 percent complete. The Bank is fully aware of its responsibilities to ensure that the costs do not escalate beyond reasonable levels and that many of the original design features to including data centre, currency processing centre, ICT equipment, and specialized security features have been deferred and only grey boxes provided for future use to manage costs.”

Police re-arrest jailbreaker who hid in forest for 3 days

Nine Community Police Assistants stationed in Ajumako Bisease, within the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District of the Central Region, have successfully apprehended Augustine Ghansah, an escaped prison inmate.

Ghansah managed to break out of the Osamkrom Prison camp, situated in the Agona West District of the Central Region.

Following his escape, a report was filed at the Ajumako Bisease Police Station, prompting the launch of an investigation.

Upon learning that the police were actively searching for him, the fugitive took refuge in a dense forest in Ajumako Bisease. In response, nine Community Police Assistants were dispatched to comb the forest in pursuit of Ghansah.

After three days of relentless searching, they eventually spotted him concealed behind a large tree near a thick undergrowth. A swift chase ensued, leading to his capture.

Ghansah was subsequently taken into police custody and placed in a cell before being returned to the Osamkrom Prison camp.

The successful apprehension of the escaped prisoner has garnered widespread praise for the commendable efforts of these nine Community Police Personnel stationed at the Ajumako Bisease Police Station.

Residents are now urging the government and Inspector General of Police, George Akuffo Dampare, to consider permanently recruiting these nine Community Police Personnel into the Ghana Police Service as a valuable contribution to national security.

  • BoG printed GHC35bn in 2021 and GHC40bn in 2022 – Eric Adjei

    BoG printed GHC35bn in 2021 and GHC40bn in 2022 – Eric Adjei

Deputy Director of Communications for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bono Region, Eric Adjei, has alleged that in the past two years, the government has borrowed a total of GHC75 billion from the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

He claims that in 2021, the Central Bank lent GHC35 billion to the government, and GHC40 billion the year after.

Mr Adjei made these allegations during an interview on Peace FM’s Kokroko show.

“In 2021, Bank of Ghana printed GH35 billion. In 2020, the money spent by the government was GH55 billion. Five percent of GH55 billion is around GH2.8 billion. Government repeated the same thing in 2022, of which they printed an extra GH40 billion,” he said.

He added: “Section 30 clause 3 of the law does not permit continuous borrowing if the borrower fails to make payments to the lender.

In the wisdom of Akufo-Addo, after failing to pay the earlier loans, the Bank of Ghana provided more loans.”

The Bank of Ghana has clarified its financing actions during the years 2020 and 2022, both marked by economic challenges arising from external and internal factors. The central bank disclosed that it provided substantial support to the government during these periods.

In 2020 and 2022, when the economy faced the impact of both external shocks and the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bank of Ghana extended financial assistance to the government. Specifically, the central bank allocated GHS10 billion in 2022 to address the COVID-19 crisis, and it initiated the COVID-19 Pandemic Bond on behalf of the government.

“First, it will be important to recall the circumstances under which the Government of Ghana decided to seek International Monetary Fund support. Ghana had lost access to the International Capital Market, domestic revenue was significantly underperforming and not realised, pushing the state of government finances into near external and domestic default. With the above, the policy choices were not that of business as usual but rather a more challenging conduct of macroeconomic policy in the context of crisis”.

“The government needed to finance critical expenditures for which Bank of Ghana needed to provide the necessary financing to avert a disorderly default of both servicing for domestic and external debt including financing critical imports to keep the economy on the stable path”, it added.

Furthermore, due to the closure of the capital market in Ghana, the central bank disbursed GHS37.9 billion in 2022 as budgetary support to enable the government to manage essential expenses such as salaries and debt obligations.

  • AriseGhana to participate in NDC picketing over $250m BoG headquarters

AriseGhana to participate in NDC picketing over $250m BoG headquarters

Pressure group AriseGhana has declared its intention to join forces with the Minority to stage a protest outside the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) premises.

Their primary demand is the resignation of the Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, along with his deputies.

This decision by the group stems from the controversy surrounding the construction of the Bank of Ghana’s new headquarters, which is reported to have incurred a cost of approximately $250 million.

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has defended the construction of this new headquarters, asserting that their current head office, erected in the 1960s, no longer meets the required standards.

AriseGhana, in a statement, explained that their decision to participate in the protest is a response to the turmoil created by the central bank’s actions.

“After painstakingly studying the damning revelations contained in the 2022 Report and financial statements of the Bank of Ghana, we have come to the conclusion that the Central Bank is in the unprecedented mess it presently finds itself because of crass mismanagement by the Addison-led Board and management.”

The NDC has presented a series of demands, primarily objecting to the expenditure associated with the construction of the new headquarters situated in Ridge. Additionally, they are calling for the resignation of the Bank’s governor and his two deputies.

AriseGhana shares these concerns and is particularly alarmed by the currency printing activities conducted by the Bank in 2021 and 2022, which they attribute to a combination of recklessness and corruption.

“We hold the view that the illegal printing of money by BoG in the year 2021 and 2022 to the tune of GH¢77 billion to finance the recklessness of the corrupt Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government, in flagrant disregard of section 30 of the BOG Act (as amended) is the height of irresponsibility and must be condemned by all well-meaning Ghanaians.”

Following their victorious performance against the Lionesses at Stadium Australia, the triumphant Spanish players ascended the podium to receive their gold medals from FIFA president Gianni Infantino. Spain had secured a 1-0 victory over England in the final match.

Among the dignitaries present to congratulate the Spanish stars was Queen Letizia, who was clad in all-red attire in a show of support for her compatriots. She warmly embraced the players.

Also sharing the stage was Luis Rubiales, the head of the Spanish Federation, who enveloped striker Jenni Hermoso in a hearty hug and whispered to her. He then placed both hands on the back of her head and kissed her on the lips.

  • I for lef Ghana: The case of evaporating patriotism

I for lef Ghana: The case of evaporating patriotism

Patriotism has left the bloodstreams of Ghanaians. Every day on social media, at least five people on my feed type the words ‘I for lef Ghana’ (pidgin for I have to leave Ghana), simply because they don’t see a promising future here. There is very little to believe in, to hope for, to be proud of.

In 1994, my father booked a ticket from Germany all the way back to Ghana, with his family of three. Everyone thought he was mad – I was just a year shy of getting German citizenship, my sister had just been born, and he was living a comfortable, impactful life, working with the Ecumenical Mission.

‘Stay a little longer. At least give the children the option of getting another passport.’

But his mind had been made up. He left the very week his appointment ended. He wanted to come back home, where kwadaa and kani were easy to find. He wanted to wear his agbada and cloth everywhere, nod his head to the rhythm of highlife music, and contribute his quota to the development of his beloved Ghana.

    For him, Ghana was home.

You see, he had broken bounds with his fellow Ɔdadeɛ to watch Nkrumah pronounce Ghana as ‘free forever’ in 1957. He had ardently followed the stories of all African leaders who were pushing for an authentically African rebirth. He gave his children authentic names that told the stories of their birth. Patriotism was oozing out of his veins. Daddy unfortunately passed away in 2012, but I can only imagine what he would have thought if he were alive today.

Today, people take more pride in associating with their tribes or the high schools they attended than the land of our birth. At least, those associations provide some sort of benefit. The same cannot be said for Ghana.

Every sector – education, health, transport, sports, arts, trade, tourism, and the Godfather of them all, finance – is riddled with a plethora of problems. There are the officials who have blocked the nerve endings of their consciences with corrupt money, a system that stifles and frustrates change, and a people who have reluctantly accepted and adjusted to the status quo.

Ghana should not be where it is. We have had several pivotal moments in history where people had hope in the future of the country – in recent times, when Mahama took over after Mills’ passing in 2012 because he did not have the burden of pleasing his kingmakers; the Occupy Ghana demonstration in 2014 because a movement of intentional citizens were rising and when Akufo-Addo won the 2016 elections, because the insensitivity of the then Mahama administration.

Time has shown that each time hope arose, it was deflated as quickly as it sprung up.

I recently saw a tweet about important first date questions, including how close you are to the national cake. It has become apparent that our leaders, irrespective of the colours of their party flags, are not thinking about the future of the country.

The focus seems to be on making as much money as soon as possible while in power. The closer you are to the national cake, the bigger the slice you get. Even if you are just a foot soldier, the crumbs will find their way to you.

This is why the fight to claim or retain power is a fierce one. No government can deny how being in power somehow insulates you from the problems of the ordinary Ghanaian.

    I for lef Ghana.

We think it every time our cars struggle to claw their way out of potholes deep enough to pass for dams in pitch black darkness, only guided by our headlights and ‘pothole memory’.

When we turn on the radio and hear politicians defend the indefensible while we and our loved ones bear the brunt of their short-sighted decisions, we shake our heads and mutter it under our breath.

It crosses the mind of the doctor who has to use the torchlight from his phone to perform surgery.

The young man, whose salary can no longer support the very basic life he and his wife live, tunes into another YouTube video on how to immigrate to Canada before his first child is born.

The old woman who has saved and invested all her money in order to have a fairly decent life and pay for her medical check ups has lost all her money, with no remorse or empathy from those who lost it.

The business owner contemplates closing down a business that is suffocating under the weight of multiple taxes.

The average person is gradually being priced out of everyday things- a good meal, a cold drink.

The dreams of working hard to buy a house or piece of land for the average working professional look more and more unrealistic, with every wave of inflation.

The young professional who wants to enter politics to change the course of the nation is faced with unpalatable choices – work your way up the existing corrupt parties or suffer the heartbreak of watching citizens exchange their votes for a 200 cedi note and three cups of rice.

The regular citizen who is not interested in politics is even afraid to point out that the barest minimum that any self respecting government provide should not be a campaign point, for fear of being attacked by a legion of loyal foot soldiers.

The voices of those who constantly speak out are getting dimmer. They are getting tired of speaking to governments that refuse to be accountable to citizens, tired of pointing out the patterns of corruption and double standards, tired of the insensitivity and arrogance of those who can’t feel our suffering. They are tired of fellow citizens whose loyalty is based on tribe, personal benefit and tradition.

With every passing day, the people of Ghana bury that love under a rubble. They brush away that nudging feeling that the future looks bleak. Feelings of patriotism are no longer invoked when they hear the national anthem.

Some day soon, everyone who can, go lef Ghana.

    ‘Where are you going?’

‘This is your home. There is no place like home.’

My home wants to kill me. The house is on fire and the people who should be leading the fort to turn off the fire are fascinated by the flames and are dancing to songs of celebration, because somehow power makes our leaders blind, insensitive and obstinate.

    Yen ara asaase ni.

With every passing day, this feels more like fiction for the ordinary Ghanaian.

  • NPP communicators paid GHC1000 to defend Bank of Ghana – Eric Adjei reveals

NPP communicators paid GHC1000 to defend Bank of Ghana – Eric Adjei reveals

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Deputy Director of Communications for the Bono Region,  Eric Adjei, has accused the New Patriotic Party of bribery over the construction of the new Bank of Ghana (BoG) headquarters.

In an interview on the Kokroko show on Peace FM, Mr Adjei claimed that communicators of the ruling party received cash from the Central Bank to argue for the construction of its headquarters.

According to him, NPP Communicators were paid GHS1000 to convince Ghanaians of the need for the construction of a new headquarters.

“The NPP is doing something, the way they are doing things, it may lead to the elimination of the moral aspect.

“When this Bank of Ghana issue surfaced, one Opata, I don’t know whether he is a PRO or not. He came to meet NPP communicators. Be honest to yourself, don’t lie.

“They gave the communicators GHS1000 so they lie about the details, you are being dishonest to yourselves. You are a Bank of the nation and not a political party,” he said.

The Central Bank of Ghana has provided justification as to why the institution is investing $250 million in a new headquarters amidst an economic crisis.

In a press statement, the Bank of Ghana explained that the need to construct a new headquarters stems from the threat of seismic activity.

According to the Central Bank, its current structure, built in the 1960s, lacks structural integrity, and is therefore incapable of withstanding an earth tremor.

This comes after the Minority in Parliament questioned the investment being made by the Bank of Ghana under the supervision of Governor Dr Ernest Addison.

Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson at a National Democratic Congress (NDC) press conference on Tuesday, August 8, labelled the Bank of Ghana as insensitive over its decision.

The ongoing project is a 21-storey structure situated in Ridge, adjacent to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Ridge.

The project, said to be approximately 50% finished, has been awarded to De Simone Limited.

  • NPP Primaries: Kwabena Agyepong to climax nationwide tour in Ashanti Region

NPP Primaries: Kwabena Agyepong to climax nationwide tour in Ashanti Region

A hopeful presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, will conclude his nationwide tour on Tuesday, August 22nd, by meeting with Super Delegates of the Ashanti Region in Kumasi.

His 9-day journey covered various locations, including Accra, Dambai, Ho, Takoradi, Cape Coast, Techiman, Sunyani, and Goaso. The purpose of the tour was to engage with the party’s delegates ahead of the NPP Super Delegates Conference scheduled for Saturday, August 26.

While addressing delegates in the Oti Region, Agyepong reiterated his commitment to lead a streamlined and efficient government should he be elected as the country’s President.

He further expounded on his 6 Point Plan, emphasizing his determination to reduce wastefulness in public procurement by ensuring optimal Value For Money. Agyepong also noted that his vision of ushering in a “NEW DAWN” has been positively received by the general populace.

“If I’m blessed to have the opportunity to be President, I’ll be substantially different. I don’t see why there should be a Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs or Ministry of Chieftaincy. It used to be a Secretariat at the Presidency.”

“So there are many things I want to see cut, especially when we are going through very tough economic times. It is not the quantum of money you save by reducing the number of Ministries per se but it is the strong moral message you send to the country that as government we’re tightening our belt, leading by example, and walking the talk,” he said.

At Ho in the Volta Region, Ing Agyepong called on the delegates to eschew materialism, resist the monetization of politics, instead he entreated them to vote for values, virtues, principles and reward long dedicated service to our great party. He told delegates that they have a sacred responsibility to deliver a brighter future to generations unborn.

Ing Agyepong added that if elected President he will demonstrate exemplary leadership in order to carry the country along as we implement austerity measures to set the economy back on a path of sustainable growth.

“Its time for a drastic departure from the status quo, business as usual and more of the same will not work for the Npp in 2024” he told the delegates.

Meeting the delegates of the Central Region in Cape Coast the aspirant insisted that the party needs a lease of new life by electing a Flagbearer who represents a NEW DAWN in order to enhance the party’s chances of winning the elusive third consecutive term in the 2024 general elections.

Ing Kwabena Agyei Agyepong who was Press Secretary to President JA Kufuor and a former NPP General Secretary maintained that he has the skills set and relevant experience to help retain power for the party.

“We need an energetic and decisive leader to reconnect with our party base and earn the trust of the Ghanaian people. I humbly submit that I offer that hope of a fresh start for Ghana.”

Jenni Hermoso disliked kiss from FA president

Spain’s star player, Jenni Hermoso, has expressed her discomfort after being kissed on the lips by the Spanish FA president, Luis Rubiales.

This incident took place as Hermoso was making her way to the podium following Spain’s victory over England in the Women’s World Cup final, thanks to Olga Carmona’s winning goal.

After receiving her medal from FIFA president Gianni Infantino, Hermoso was hugged by Mr. Rubiales, who then lifted her off her feet. Following a brief conversation, Mr. Rubiales embraced Hermoso from behind and kissed her on the lips.

The incident quickly sparked outrage on social media, with many football fans deeming Mr. Rubiales’ actions as inappropriate.

The former England international Casey Stoney tweeted: “Would he kiss a male player like this? This is NOT ok.”

Asked about the moment, Hermoso told Spanish TV network La 1: “Eh… yeah, I did not enjoy that.”

Mr Rubiales was asked about the incident, telling Radio Marca that it was merely “two people having a minor show of affection” and that he will not take notice of “idiocy,” referencing those outraged by his behaviour.

“The kiss with Jenni? There are idiots everywhere,” he said. “When two people have a minor show of affection, we can’t listen to idiocies. We are champions and that is what stays with me”.

The World Cup victory marks another milestone in the illustrious career of 33-year-old Jenni Hermoso. She has enjoyed successful stints with clubs like Atletico Madrid and Barcelona and is presently playing for the Mexican team Pachuca.

Olga Carmona’s first-half goal perfectly epitomized Spain’s stylish brand of football and ultimately proved sufficient for Spain to narrowly defeat the Lionesses in Sydney. This win allowed Spain to avenge their loss to England in last year’s European Championships quarter-finals.

Although Hermoso had a penalty saved by England’s goalkeeper Mary Earps in the second half, the Lionesses couldn’t find an equalizer, and Jorge Vilda’s team held on for the victory.

During a Sunday church service on August 20th, Rt. Rev. Prof. Obiri Yeboah Mante, the outgoing moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, lauded Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for his role in promoting religious harmony, going so far as to call him a “Muslim Christian.”

Speaking at the conclusion of the 23rd General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana at the Ramseyer congregation in Abetifi Kwahu, Rev. Prof. Mante expressed gratitude to God for the presence of Vice President Bawumia in the nation.

He commended the Vice President for his embrace of religious diversity, highlighting his ease and comfort in worshiping alongside Christians despite being a Muslim.

He narrated that “one day at one of our events like this I was standing by the Vice President Bawumia and surprisingly, he sang all the lines of a hymn we were singing. So I asked him how did you learn all of these, and he responded that I used to be a member of the Methodist Boys Brigade when I was young. I don’t know if he finally became an officer, but I think he is more than a Muslim. I think Vice President Bawumia is a Muslim Christian.”

The concluding session of the 23rd General Assembly attracted numerous distinguished individuals from academia, politics, traditional leadership, as well as clergy members representing the Presbyterian Church from various parts of the continent.

During this year’s Assembly, Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye was elected as the new moderator of the church.

Survey predicts landslide victory for Bawumia in NPP super delegates conference

The Centre for Sustainable African Development Initiatives, UK, has forecast that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is positioned to secure a substantial victory in the upcoming NPP Super Delegates election on Saturday.

A survey conducted by the group, which delved into the outcome of the Special Delegates Conference and potential top 5 contenders, indicated that Dr. Bawumia is expected to emerge as the winner with a decisive margin.

The remaining candidates are projected to gather relatively modest percentages to secure a spot in the top 5.

According to the findings, which were based on the views of Super Delegates, Dr. Bawumia is anticipated to achieve 72.6% of the votes. Former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen is predicted to come in second with 7.7%.

Kennedy Agyepong is positioned to take the third spot with 4.3%, followed by Kwabena Adjei Agyepong with 1.3%, and former Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto concluding the top 5 with 0.6%.

The survey also disclosed that 13% of the delegates were undecided at the time of the research.

The special delegates, composed of Members of Parliament, constituency chairmen, regional executives, national executives, and other members, were asked about their predictions for the top 5 candidates to be elected by the delegates of NPP’s special electoral college. Additionally, they were questioned about the criteria they use to assess candidates for the NPP flagbearer position.

According to the report, the primary factors considered by delegates when evaluating candidates were the candidate’s vision for the party and the country, as well as their competence.

Tiktok, Telegram and 1xBet banned by Somalia

The Ministry of Communications and Technology in Somalia has issued an order to internet service providers to suspend access to social media platforms TikTok and Telegram, along with the gambling site 1xBet.

Minister of Communications and Technology, Jama Hassan Khalif, issued this directive in a statement released on Sunday, August 20.

The decision was grounded in concerns related to security and counter-terrorism efforts, as well as the perceived adverse influence of these platforms on the lives of Somali youth.

Khalif said Somalia has resorted to the controversial ban to ”protect the moral behavior of the Somali community when using communication and internet tools.”

The statement partly read; “In a bid to accelerate the war and elimination of the terrorists who have shed the blood of the Somali people, the minister of communication and technology instructs companies that provide internet services to suspend TikTok, Telegram, and 1XBET betting applications, which terrorists and groups responsible for spreading immorality use to spread graphic clips, photos and mislead society.”

The ready availability of these platforms has led to a significant increase in their usage among the younger population, sparking apprehensions regarding the potential for adverse influences and exploitation.

In Kenya, the National Assembly is presently examining a petition that calls for a TikTok ban, citing concerns over explicit content and a lack of adequate regulation.

  • Ghana’s unemployment rate is ‘unacceptable’ – Akufo-Addo

    Ghana’s unemployment rate is ‘unacceptable’ – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has expressed deep concern over Ghana’s unemployment rate, deeming it to be in an unacceptable state.

The unemployment rate in Ghana is anticipated to reach 5.00 percent by the conclusion of 2023, as indicated by the global macro models and analysts’ expectations reported by Trading Economics.

Looking ahead, according to Trading Economics’ econometric models, the Ghana Unemployment Rate is forecasted to follow a trend of approximately 4.70 percent in 2024 and 4.50 percent in 2025.

President Akufo-Addo conveyed these sentiments during an event where he recognized and celebrated young male and female entrepreneurs in connection with the Presidential Pitch initiative, which took place on Friday, August 18, 2023.

He said: “Entrepreneurship is a vital component of economic growth and development, and has been embraced globally as an important driver of economic transformation.

“I believe firmly that the fastest way to deal with the challenges confronting our economy and the unacceptable rate of unemployment is the fusion of technology, entrepreneurship, and business.

“Governments, the world over, recognise youth entrepreneurship as the appropriate tool to address the unemployment challenges of our times.”

He added: “That is why I am happy that, under Seasons One, Two, and Three of the Presidential Pitch, 702 direct and thousands of indirect jobs have been created by our winners, with majority of these jobs being established in rural communities.

“I want to single out the Chief Executive Officer of Pizzaman Chickenman, Christian Boakye Yiadom, the tenth-place winner from Season Two for special mention. He started his pizza business on the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi.

“He received twenty-five thousand cedis (25,000), which he used to scale-up his business. It eventually led to the opening of the first Pizzaman Chickenman branch on KNUST campus on 17th January 2020, some six months after the competition. Today, Pizzaman Chickenman has become a household name and a favourite bite for many.”

Menzgold withdraws GHS650 validation fee initiative after public backlash

Menzgold Ghana has rescinded its previously initiated paid customer validation process in a bid to streamline payment procedures for its disgruntled customers.

Menzgold Ghana earlier demanded GHS650 from its client in a new phase of customer validation in order to expedite the disbursement of funds to customers whose investments have been trapped.

In an earlier statement released on July 29, 2023, the Defunct gold trading company announced that it has successfully completed the transaction validation process assuring to make payments to its customers soon.

But in a release on August 18, the company indicated that customers looking to recover their trapped funds would be required to engage in the Menzgold Digital Verification Access Card procedure, aimed at confirming transactions and validating claims.

According to Menzgold, this has become imperative as their initial assessments identified a substantial number of claims that did not meet the necessary criteria and were therefore considered ineligible.

Over sixty percent of claims submitted for validation were plagued with several defects including irregularities or inconsistencies of the records on the face of the documents, fake (fraudulent) supporting documents, fake authorized signatures, among others, the company noted.

As per the announcement, the Menzgold Digital Verification Access Card will be obtainable for GH¢650 each through authorized Payboy Agents.

This card will grant customers the ability to review the status of their transaction validation from August 10, 2023, to September 14, 2023. Additionally, customers will be asked to upload original colored digital copies of supporting documents for their transactions.

In response, aggrieved customers have deemed this initiative as unlawful. Spokesperson for the aggrieved customers of Menzgold, Fred Forson, noted that the company cannot make such demands after its closure in 2018 by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for contravening the Securities Industry Act, 2016 (Act 929).

Following the backlash, the company has discontinued its initiative in a press release dated August 20.

    It read in part: “Following concerns by some well-meaning Ghanaians and an extensive engagement with stakeholders with respect to our 18th August, 2023 press release, we have resolved as follows;

“That Menzgold would cease the production and printing of the PVC Digital Access Cards, which imposes cost burden and shall resort to the printing of the PIN Codes only, for onwards distribution at no cost.”

  • Gold for oil policy can’t check changes in world fuel market price – BOST

Gold for oil policy can’t check changes in world fuel market price – BOST

Managing Director of Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation (BOST), Edwin Provencal, has noted that the government’s gold for oil policy is unable to shield Ghanaians from the changes in petroleum product prices on the world market.

According to him, the policy is only able to address the issue of forex exchange, where the Bank of Ghana, through its Domestic Gold Purchase (DGP) programme, provides foreign currency for the importation of petroleum products for the country, which currently stands at about US$350 million per month.

Engaging the media on the sidelines of BOST’s 2nd Annual General Meeting on August 17, he said: “The gold for oil policy was a temporary measure put in place to deal with the inflationary pressure that befell us last year.

“The price build-up has two key components. One is the world market price, and the other is the forex. The gold for oil has addressed the forex issue, but if the world market price keeps going up, there is not much gold for oil can do about that.”

His comment comes at a time when some Oil Market Companies (OMCs) have increased prices of petroleum products at the pumps.

TotalEnergies has increased the price of petrol to GHS13.50 per litre from GHS12.45 per litre at the beginning of the month.

Diesel is also going for GHS13.90 per litre from the previous price of GHS12.45 per litre. Goil has also increased prices petrol to GHS3.50 and diesel to GHS13.90 per litre.

This has been linked to an increase in the prices of finished products on the international market by an average of around 11% for both petrol and diesel.

According to the Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Duncan Amoah, crude price has also increased by 6.79% from the mean price of $80.67/barrel to $86.15/barrel even though the forex or dollar exchange rate has relatively decreased from a previous average of GHS11.7185 to GHS11.4538 (-2.26%) per $1.

In July this year, Saudi Arabia and Russia announced that they were extending cuts to the amount of oil they pump into the world in a bid to prop up prices.

The Saudi Energy Ministry said it would extend July’s cut of 1 million barrels per day through August to support “the stability and balance of oil markets.” That will keep the Gulf nation’s output at 9 million barrels per day.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak on the other hand, said his country will cut production by an additional 500,000 barrels a day in August.

Niger junta leader to hand over power in 3 years

General Abdourahamane Tchiani, who orchestrated a coup to overthrow President Mohamed Bazoum and assumed control of Niger’s government, has put forth a proposal to restore democracy within a span of three years.

The junta head said that Niger did not want a war but would defend itself against any foreign intervention.

“If an attack were to be undertaken against us, it will not be the walk in the park some people seem to think,” he warned in his televised address on Saturday evening.

Gen Tchiani reaffirmed his condemnation of the sanctions imposed by Ecowas, which he characterized as “illegitimate and inhumane.” These sanctions have included measures such as electricity cuts, leading to power outages in Niamey and other major urban centers, as well as the disruption of vital imports.

As a consequence, truck drivers have been stranded for weeks, unable to deliver essential supplies, causing a surge in food prices.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has warned of the possibility of military intervention if diplomatic negotiations prove unsuccessful in reversing the coup that occurred last month, resulting in the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum.

Regional initiatives aimed at overturning the coup have garnered support from the United States and France, both of which maintain military bases in Niger. These bases are instrumental in the joint efforts to combat jihadist organizations across the broader Sahel region.

The leader of the junta, who previously headed the presidential guard before assuming power on July 26th, cautioned that military intervention might exacerbate the ongoing Islamist insurgencies associated with groups like al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.

Ministry of Sanitation commences nationwide evacuation of refuse dumps

The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources has initiated a nationwide effort to evacuate refuse dumps, aiming to prevent potential outbreaks of communicable diseases in rural areas, cities, and other urban centers.

The sector minister, Dr. Freda Prempeh, disclosed that the Ministry has partnered with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a private waste management and sanitation company, for this undertaking.

As part of this effort, the Ministry plans to strategically place an adequate number of waste bins and refuse containers across the country, promoting proper waste disposal and encouraging sound sanitation practices for environmental cleanliness.

Dr. Prempeh, who also serves as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North Constituency, shared this information during her engagement with the media after inspecting refuse dump evacuation operations in various locations, including Bourkrukruwa, Terchire, Nsesreso, and Jerusalem within the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region.

She expressed concern about the presence of long-standing refuse dumps, some dating back centuries, in rural communities and urban areas.

These dumps not only pose a health risk by serving as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, rodents, reptiles, and other dangerous animals but also contribute to poor sanitation practices. Some of these sites have even been used as open defecation areas.

Dr. Prempeh stressed the importance of proper waste management and environmental cleanliness as shared and collective responsibilities. She appealed to the public to support the Ministry by refraining from indiscriminate dumping of refuse and plastic waste materials and avoiding littering.

The Minister emphasized that waste segregation and recycling of plastic materials have been prioritized.

Households are encouraged to segregate their waste, and those who fail to do so before disposing of waste into containers and bins may face additional fees.

Acting Director of Environmental Health and Sanitation at the Ministry, Mr. Sampson Akwettey, highlighted the significant financial resources allocated for waste management annually and called on everyone to contribute to maintaining a clean environment.

Spain beat England to be crowned 2023 World Cup champions

England’s quest for their first Women’s World Cup title ended in heartbreak as they were defeated by Spain in the final in Sydney.

The Lionesses, aiming to replicate the achievement of the 1966 men’s team by winning the World Cup, were outclassed by a creative and skillful Spanish side.

Spain’s captain, Olga Carmona, slotted in the winning goal in the first half, taking advantage of a loss of possession by England’s Lucy Bronze in midfield.

Despite introducing Lauren James and Chloe Kelly at halftime, England struggled to seize control as Spain continued to dominate.

Goalkeeper Mary Earps made several remarkable saves, including one from a penalty kick to deny Jenni Hermoso after a lengthy video assistant referee review had penalized Keira Walsh for a handball.

Despite their remarkable journey, the European champions fell short in the final, marking just their second defeat in two years under manager Sarina Wiegman.

Spain claimed their first-ever championship, overcoming a cloud of controversy that hung over them before the tournament due to disputes between players and the Spanish football federation.

Meanwhile, the Prince and Princess of Wales, based at Kensington Palace, have congratulated the English players for their dedication.

“Your spirit & drive have inspired so many people and paved the way for generations to come,” they noted.

Medical Director of St. Mary Theresa Hospital, Dr. Victory Ametepe, has announced that the hospital achieved zero maternal mortality rates for the years 2021, 2022, and the first half of 2023.

This remarkable accomplishment can be attributed to effective collaboration among stakeholders, the provision of excellent maternal care for prevention and timely treatment of complications, and the dedication of the hospital’s staff.

Dr. Ametepe shared this achievement during the Mid-year Performance Review Meeting of the Kadjebi District Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), held in Kadjebi, Oti Region.

In terms of child mortality statistics, Dr. Ametepe noted that there were eight under-five deaths for the period under review, with six in 2022 and 17 in 2021. Infant deaths numbered eight for the same period, with four in 2022 and 11 in 2021. Regarding stillbirths, there were eight cases recorded as of mid-year 2023, compared to 13 cases in both 2022 and 2021. The number of fresh stillbirths was three in 2023, four in 2022, and two in 2021.

Regarding supervised deliveries, the hospital recorded 337 deliveries as of mid-year 2023, 352 in 2022, and 383 in 2021. Traditional Birth Attendant (TBA) deliveries, on the other hand, registered zero for both 2023 and 2022, with six TBA deliveries in 2021. Antenatal care (ANC) registration figures were 211 in 2023, 229 in 2022, and 310 in 2021, with mothers attending their fourth ANC visit numbering 197, 177, and 181, respectively.

Mr. Damasus Ayangba, Deputy Regional Director, Administration, Oti Regional Health Directorate, commended the hospital for being the Overall Best Performing Hospital in the Oti Region in 2022. He assured them of continued logistical support from the regional directorate and encouraged health workers to maintain and improve their performance, as service to mankind is service to God.

Mr. Eric Nana Takyi, Kadjebi District Director of Health Services, emphasized that the mid-year performance review aimed to identify gaps and formulate strategies to address them. He noted that stillbirth rates had decreased from 18 percent in 2022 to 8 percent in the first half of 2023, while teenage pregnancy had also declined from 16 percent to 10 percent during the same period. However, neonatal deaths had risen to 8 percent from 2 percent in the corresponding period.

Nana Takyi highlighted the growing issue of substance and alcohol abuse in the district and called for a change to prevent potential increases in mental health challenges.

The ceremony also recognized four individuals and two sub-districts for their outstanding performance as COVID-19 vaccinators, which contributed to the district achieving its 70 percent vaccination target. Various units, including Health Promotion, Mental Health, Public Health, Nutrition, and Disease Control, made presentations during the event.

  • 52% of citizens against deploying Ghanaian soldiers to Niger – Global InfoAnalytics

52% of citizens against deploying Ghanaian soldiers to Niger – Global InfoAnalytics

A two-day poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics on August 18 and 19, approximately indicates that 52% of the Ghanaian population opposes Ghana’s participation in a military intervention aimed at restoring democracy in Niger.

This poll surveyed 1,618 respondents spanning all sixteen regions of Ghana. Among its findings, it revealed that nearly 76% of Ghanaians believe that coups in African countries stem from poor governance. Conversely, 17% do not share this perspective, and 7% expressed no opinion.

Furthermore, 49% of Ghanaians hold the view that coups do not provide a lasting solution to addressing governance issues, while 43% disagree, and 8% do not have a definite opinion on the matter.

The backdrop for this discussion is the recent ousting of Niger’s President, Mohamed Bazoum, leading the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to order the deployment of its standby force on August 10 to reinstate constitutional order in Niger.

The declaration was made by ECOWAS President Omar Alieu Touray during the ECOWAS Extraordinary meeting in Abuja.

Meanwhile, Commissioner of Political Affairs, Peace and Security for the Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS), Abdel-Fatau Musah, has contested assertions that the bloc would require 50,000 troops in Niger for a potential deployment to remove the military junta.

He pointed out that Niger’s military has approximately 13,000 personnel, and if ECOWAS were to deploy its standby army to restore the ousted president, Mohamed Bazoum, it wouldn’t necessitate 50,000 troops to confront them.

The question of troop numbers was initially raised by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, who cited credible sources to support his claims.

During his appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, August 19, he further revealed that, regrettably, only four countries within the bloc were likely to contribute troops to this mission.

“If you really look at ECOWAS today, it’s Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal and Ivory Coast. Nigeria is already stretched with Boko Haram. Tinubu [Nigeria’s President] doesn’t have support. Ivory Coast says they can do 1,000 [soldiers].

“Senegal, I know has received a juicy offer from America to send their troops to Haiti to support the American intervention there because Haiti is totally getting out of control. They are likely to accept that. We’re left with Ghana, how are we going to get those numbers?” he quizzed.

  • Man constructs 5km road from Akwasihuo to Twenedurase in the mountains, and here is why

Man constructs 5km road from Akwasihuo to Twenedurase in the mountains, and here is why

Yaw Sarpong, a modest millionaire originally from Kwahu, has fondly reminisced about a memorable family outing from years ago which has prompted remarkable decision to construct a 5km road.

Sarpong shared that during an Easter excursion with his family, they learned about the existence of a concealed cave nestled within the mountains.

Speaking to video blogger Kwahu Ambassador, Sarpong recounted how their car journey was abruptly halted, and they had to continue on foot as the road came to an end.

Their path took them through a forest, and upon arriving at their destination, Sarpong was struck by a profound conviction that this remarkable place should not remain hidden from the world simply due to the absence of a road.

“We came for Easter: my wife and our children. We were informed that there was a cave at Twenedurase and so we go and check it out. So, when we got to (sic), we had to get down and walk through a forest until we got to see the cave. The cave was so unique so much that if you decided to literally catch the darkness in there, it would be so possible.

“This cave is the kind that the Whiteman will call a tourist attraction, and according to the Kwahu people, they say during Okono’s time, that was where our ancestors used to camp. So, I started asking why something this beautiful was here but there is not proper road leading to it? The man who took us there said people had tried but it didn’t work, and that some foreigners had been around there in 1948 but couldn’t build a road.

“The man then said if we walked through the forest, we would get to another town called Akwasihuo. I told him I would try it out and when I did, I wondered what was so difficult about this that they could not build a road.

“One day, I came to church and after the service, I told the pastor, who was called Gyakye, that they should pray for me because I wanted to build the road linking Akwasihuo and Twenedurase. Whether the pastor believed me or not, he asked that the church bow their heads and they prayed for me,” he explained.

Yaw Sarpong went on to elaborate that he took a courageous step and initiated efforts to commence the construction.

He recounted that despite expressing his intention, the chief of one of the two communities that the road would link had disheartening words for him.

The chief conveyed his doubts, indicating that he didn’t believe Sarpong could undertake the road construction, especially when previous attempts by foreigners had proven unsuccessful.

“And the chief of Twenedurase was sitting there and these are his own words: he said young children of today, when we get up, after going to drinking tramadol, then we come bragging. And that the road that even the Whiteman could not do, what did I have that I was claiming that I could build it,” he added.

USAID launches programme worth $14m to support basic education

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has initiated a new project worth $14.39 million over a five-year period to provide support to low-cost private schools in Northern Ghana.

This marks USAID’s inaugural venture into Ghana’s private school sector, with the aim of enhancing accessibility to 213 carefully chosen low-cost private schools in the northern region.

A statement from USAID indicated that Grace Lang, the Deputy Mission Director of USAID, collaborated with Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, to inaugurate this project in Tamale.

“A quality education should not depend on where you live. We want every child to have access to quality education. The $14 million activity we are launching today will support low-cost private schools that serve rural and disadvantaged communities.”

“The activity will support the schools to improve education access, quality, and learning outcomes for students, and increase private sector investments in northern Ghana,” USAID Deputy Mission Director Lang said in the statement.

As outlined in the statement, the newly initiated USAID program aims to achieve several key objectives. These include the enhancement of teacher certification and retention, the reinforcement of school leadership capabilities and overall quality, and the implementation of a comprehensive investment strategy to support school improvements.

Furthermore, the activity will facilitate the provision of accessible financing alternatives for specifically chosen low-cost private schools that cater to underprivileged communities in the northern region of Ghana.

“The activity is committed to serving populations in the most under-resourced locations in the northern section of the country.”

“The activity will also strengthen the relationship and regulator capacity of the Ministry of Education and its agencies in its oversight of private schools,” the statement added.

By the end of the five-year period, USAID envisions that the project will have enhanced business acumen for over 200 school leaders. It aims to equip 400 teacher mentors with evidence-based classroom best practices, allowing them to instruct an additional 2,000 teachers, and certify 1,200 untrained teachers.

Furthermore, the statement outlined that Opportunity International, the USAID implementing partner, will establish a School Capacity Building Fund (SCBF). This fund is designed to aid the identified schools in enhancing their operations and becoming more financially sound through the provision of catalytic grants.

  • ‘Many leaders of Africa are already seated in hell’ – Prophet Kofi Oduro reacts to cash in Cecilia Dapaah’s house

Leader of the Alabaster International Ministry, Prophet Kofi Oduro, has prophesied doom for many leaders in Africa over the recent controversy surrounding former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

The former minister has been the talk of town over the huge sums of money found in her residence by the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

This comes after reports that millions of dollars and cedis had been stolen from the residence of the former minister.

In response to the issue during a sermon on Ngosra TV, a YouTube channel, Prophet Kofi Oduro, condemned the minister for having such an amount of money.

His sermon primarily focused on the concept of damnation in hell, emphasizing that it would not spare politicians but would also affect ordinary individuals who engage in wrongdoing.

“We have ministers of state, men and women who are stealing money under their beds, how can you escape the damnation of hell? Many leaders of Africa are already seated in hell. Wicked, cruel people.

“An old woman 60 something years can gather money in her account. They are freezing accounts and the money in the account, I said I will not say it….” He lamented.

Prophet Kofi Oduro expressed his disappointment with President Akufo-Addo’s handling of issues, particularly regarding corruption. He cited the president’s past record in addressing corruption before assuming office as a source of concern.

“I pray for my president everyday, yesterday when I was praying, I asked God, what will Akufo-Addo be remembered for?

He also expressed concern over the undisclosed amount of money reportedly lying in the homes of many public officers, particularly the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

“If Minister of Sanitation has all this money, can you imagine what Minister of Finance has? Wicked nation, how will you escape the damnation of hell,” he said in connection with the theft of a million dollars and other sums of monies from home of former sanitation minister.

My daughter broke news of UT Bank’s closure to me – Kofi Amoabeng

Founder of UT Bank, Prince Kofi Amoabeng, has revealed the circumstances surrounding how he learned about the takeover of his bank by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) in 2017.

During the period of the bank’s takeover, he was not actively involved in its operations. In subsequent interviews, he has maintained that the decision was partly politically motivated.

In a conversation on the Twitter podcast “Bro Code,” hosted by KalyJay, Amoabeng recounted the sequence of events that led him to the shocking news. It involved a series of missed calls and a call to his daughter, eventually leading to the revelation of the takeover.

“If you go to calls (on your phone), all the contacts you miss are red. I saw my whole phone was red. I thought I had pressed something. Then I checked and I had missed call numbering about 60.

“Then I said no, something is very wrong. Then I saw one of the missed calls was from my daughter and I called her and asked, ‘Awo, why is everybody looking for me?’ because I was very apprehensive…” he recounted.

His daughter directed him to listen in to the news because UT Bank was all over the media.

“And she said ‘haven’t you listened to the news this morning?’ I said no, she said go to any station, they are discussing the government’s decision to close UT Bank. I said ‘okay. Then it is done,” he added.

Meanwhile, the 2024 flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has pledged to restore the licences of financial businesses who were run out of business unjustifiably should he win the next poll.

The former president made the promise while speaking at the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale on Monday, May 15, 2023 to formally accept his role as flagbearer.

According to Mr Mahama, one of the objectives of the next NDC government will be to promote robust local participation in the banking and financial, telecommunication, tourism, mining, and agric and manufacturing sectors to grow the economy and create sustainable employment for the youth.

The banking crisis in Ghana led to the revocation of the licenses of more than 400 financial institutions that were licensed under the Act, 2016 (Act 930) by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) between 2017 and 2020.

The Central Bank conducted an Asset Quality Review of banks in 2015 and 2016, which identified several indigenous banks facing significant challenges.

These challenges included high levels of non-performing loans, undercapitalization, and weak corporate governance.

To address these issues, BEIGE, Sovereign, Construction, UniBank (owned by former Finance Minister Dr Kwabena Duffuor), and Royal Bank were merged to form a new entity known as the Consolidated Bank of Ghana.

Also, more than twenty financial institutions, including UT Bank which was owned by Prince Kofi Amoabeng, had their licenses revoked and given to a receivership.

Following the recapitalization of the banks and a new capital requirement, the number of banks in the country reduced from 36 to 23.

Ghana invested more than twelve billion Ghana cedis for this clean-up exercise in the banking sector.

  • We don’t need 50,000 soldiers to head to Niger – ECOWAS

We don’t need 50,000 soldiers to head to Niger – ECOWAS

Commissioner of Political Affairs, Peace and Security for the Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS), Abdel-Fatau Musah, has contested assertions that the bloc would require 50,000 troops in Niger for a potential deployment to remove the military junta.

“That is speculation. We have our concrete figure but I won’t disclose it. It is far far less than what is being said. Niger force strength is about 13,000.

“We don’t need up to 50,000 troops to go and confront 13,000,” he said on Newsfile on Saturday.

Mr. Ablakwa has cited credible sources indicating that ECOWAS would need a substantial force comprising at least 50,000 troops to effectively address the situation in the West African country.

During his appearance on the August 19th edition of Newsfile on Joy FM, he further revealed that, regrettably, only four countries within the bloc were likely to contribute troops to this mission.

We’re left with Ghana, how are we going to get those numbers?” he claimed.

Messi leads Inter Miami to grab Leagues Cup title

Lionel Messi, celebrated as the “best in the world,” continued his remarkable form by scoring his 10th goal in seven games, helping Inter Miami secure their inaugural trophy.

The 36-year-old Argentine maestro unleashed a sensational shot from outside the box, finding the top corner of the net, granting Miami the lead in the Leagues Cup final against Nashville SC.

In the second half, Fafa Picault equalized, forcing the game into a penalty shootout. In the dramatic shootout, Miami clinched a 10-9 victory when Drake Callender saved a penalty from Nashville’s goalkeeper, Elliot Panicco.

Prior to the arrival of World Cup-winning forward Messi last month, along with former Barcelona teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, Miami had the worst record in Major League Soccer this season.

However, they have since gone undefeated in seven games, culminating in their Leagues Cup triumph. This tournament features both MLS and Mexican Liga MX clubs.

This victory marked a significant milestone for the club, which was established in 2020. Their success continues as they have the opportunity to reach another final when they face Cincinnati in the semi-finals of the US Open Cup on Wednesday.

Co-owner David Beckham said the former Barcelona trio were instrumental in the club’s change in fortunes: “It is like a movie, you watch these players play and, emotionally, everything about their play is beautiful.”

Spain midfielder Busquets added: “The team is growing by leaps and bounds and we are very happy.

“We are making a solid team – and then we have Leo, who makes a difference because he’s the best in the world.”

The win also meant seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi – who was named player of the tournament – has now won 44 trophies, more than any other player.

Cooking for your boyfriend shows desperation, stop it – Kafui Danku to ladies

Ghanaian actress Kafui Danku has voiced her concerns regarding the idea of women cooking for their boyfriends. In her view, this practice suggests desperation on the part of the woman.

During an interview on Hitz FM, the actress shared a personal anecdote, recalling a situation where she returned home from a trip to find her brother’s girlfriend preparing a meal for him.

“I came back home and when I came back home… I was hungry. So I’m like, Hey, what’s up? I’m hungry. He was like ‘Oh, so so and so came here and she cooked’ and I’m like ‘ewww’, she cooked? I was so disgusted. Why, a girlfriend? Why would you cook? To me, you’re desperate like you’re overcompensating for something you want to please us,” she said.

She emphasized the belief that women should be seen as the ‘prize’.

Kafui went on to describe how this incident left her astonished, prompting her to express her unease to her brother.

Furthermore, she admitted that the concept itself repelled her to the extent that she chose not to partake in the meal, despite her own hunger.

“I was hungry but I didn’t eat the food. I was super disgusted,” she added.

Kafui Danku further explained that her brother eventually moved on to a new relationship, where things were a little different.

“So later on – they are no more seeing each other and now my brother is now seeing somebody else – I saw this girl she’s so pretty gorgeous. And I was like ‘does this one also cook?’ And he was like ‘this one she does not cook oo. But they’re still together.”

The actress’s remarks highlight a perspective on gender dynamics and expectations in relationships, sparking conversations on social media.

ECOWAS currently has just 800 soldiers but needs 50,000 for military intervention in Niger – Ablakwa

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has emphasized the significant logistical hurdles that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) would encounter if it were to deploy troops to Niger.

Credible sources indicate that ECOWAS would need a substantial force of at least 50,000 troops to effectively address the security concerns in the West African nation.

However, the current commitments from member states fall far short of this requirement, according to Mr Ablakwa.

Presently, only a modest pledge of 800 to 1000 troops has been made by Ivory Coast, leaving ECOWAS facing a substantial gap in its security deployment plans, he said on JoyNews on Saturday, August 19.

“If you really look at ECOWAS today, it’s Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, and Ivory Coast.

We’re left with Ghana, how are we going to get those numbers?” he said on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday.

Recounting when the regional bloc introduced an initiative to combat extremism in the area, Mr Ablakwa said it was only Ghana and Nigeria who made a financial commitment.

“Only two countries contributed, Nigeria; $20 million and Ghana; $5 million. The rest said we should give them time,” he said.

Mr. Ablakwa, citing ECOWAS member states’ historical reluctance to fully participate, expresses skepticism about achieving the required number of troops for the mission in Niger.

In the meantime, ECOWAS has clarified that the potential deployment of military forces to restore democracy in Niger is a last resort after exhausting all other options. Abdel-Fatau Musah, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, emphasized that the intention is not to initiate a war against Niger.

Abdel-Fatau Musah also acknowledged that ECOWAS is prepared to initiate fresh negotiations in Niger in pursuit of a peaceful resolution on Saturday, August 19th. He reiterated that ECOWAS is open to engaging with the junta to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

Soldier mistakenly kills himself with his gun at Michel Camp

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has officially confirmed the loss of Private Bayou Roger, a member of the 5 Infantry Battalion, due to what appears to be an accidental discharge of his firearm.

The tragic incident occurred at the Base Ammunition Depot near Michel Camp in Accra.

According to the GAF’s account of the incident, Private Roger, who was part of the platoon stationed at the Southern Command, was diligently carrying out his duties on the morning of Saturday, August 19th, when the unfortunate event transpired.

“Preliminary investigative report indicates that the soldier was seen sitting on his bed, waiting to believe his colleague at a duty post at 8 am when his rifle went off hitting him under his chin; killing him instantly,” a statement from GAF read.

The Armed Forces has indicated that a team from the Homicide Unit of the Gbetsele Police Station is collaborating with the Military Police to investigate the incident.

“GAF takes this opportunity to express its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, friends and loved ones of the deceased soldier,” the statement added.

In the interim, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the 37 Military Hospital mortuary.

  • ECOWAS’ military intervention against Niger will not happen – Prof Aning

ECOWAS’ military intervention against Niger will not happen – Prof Aning

The Director of the Faculty of Academic Affairs and Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) says ECOWAS’ military intervention in Niger will not happen.

Professor Kwesi Aning’s stance still holds despite heads of forces of some member states after a meeting in Accra announced their readiness to strike.

According to him, the intervention will not happen because the bloc itself is facing credibility challenges and, therefore, would need to reverse its steps to regain “parts of its credibility.”

“Let me repeat it; the attack will not happen. You know yourself the number of times I’ve predicted coup d’états that have come through. So this is about forecasting and risk analysis and risk assessment.

“The intervention will not happen because ECOWAS needs to reverse or retract its steps to get parts of its credibility back,” he told Newsfile host, Samson Lardy Anyenini.

The expert indicated that the military regime in Niger started signalling their willingness to negotiate but “because of the tendency that our elders don’t make mistakes and they don’t apologise,” ECOWAS seems to be having difficulty reversing its decision.

In the midst of these developments, reports indicate that the media in Niger is abuzz with discussions regarding the possibility of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Senegal providing ammunition support to Niger in response to the anticipated military intervention by ECOWAS.

Professor Aning believes this response is a prudent one, considering ECOWAS’ announcement of its intent to carry out an intervention. He emphasized that when there’s a perceived threat of attack, it’s natural to make preparations.

Following a one-week ultimatum issued to the leaders of the Niger coup to restore constitutional rule, commanders from various ECOWAS member states gathered in Accra to deliberate on their intervention plan. Notably, Mali, Senegal, and Burkina Faso did not attend the meeting, as they expressed support for Niger and criticized ECOWAS’ approach.

Experts have also voiced their concerns about ECOWAS’ approach, asserting that the regional bloc should have exhausted all available diplomatic options before resorting to a military intervention, which was meant to be a last resort.

As per the announcement by the commanders after their Accra meeting, there are no plans for further discussions before a potential military strike in Niger.

England riding wave of support ahead of World Cup final

Sarina Wiegman expresses her satisfaction with the overwhelming support for the England team ahead of the World Cup final.

The Lionesses are set to face Spain on Sunday in their quest to secure their first-ever World Cup title.

Manager Wiegman remarked, “The outpouring of support has been incredible. We’ve truly felt the backing, not only here but also from the UK and around the world. This is something we’ve always dreamt of.”

“I feel privileged. I’m very happy in the place where I am now. There’s a lot of support, we have everything we need to perform at the highest level. It is a pleasure to work with these incredible people.”

Wiegman was concise when asked how the team had reintegrated Lauren James, who could start on Sunday after serving a two-match suspension following her red card against Nigeria in the last 16.

She said: “Of course she kept training and it’s really nice to have 23 players available for tomorrow.”

Former Netherlands boss Wiegman took over as England manager in September 2021 and led the team to Euro 2022 glory on home soil last summer.

Asked whether the bond between the players and Wiegman had grown, captain and centre-back Millie Bright said: “The longer you work together, the better the connection.

“The better you can be off the pitch, the better the conversation can be and then we can translate that to the squad.

“As much as people don’t want to face challenges, it’s part of the game, it’s part of life, and without those challenges we wouldn’t be where we are today.”

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has reaffirmed its dedication to cracking down on businesses resorting to questionable tactics to avoid paying taxes.

The GRA intends to bolster its enforcement units, conducting routine ‘test purchase’ operations and closely monitoring businesses that submit tax declarations but neglect to fulfill their tax obligations.

Joseph Annan, Assistant Commissioner and Head of the Accra Regional Enforcement Unit at GRA, stated in an interview with Joy Business following an operation that resulted in the apprehension of managers from hospitality centers and hardware stores that the Authority is committed to intensifying its endeavors to ensure tax compliance.

“So this is to send a signal to the public that it is not a nine day wonder. We are on the field and we will continue to be on the field.”

“For those we have not visited, do the right thing because we shall surely come to you” he opined.

He urged businesses to corporate with the Authority by assisting visiting teams with evidence of payment to avoid arrests.

“We want records that will assist us to assess you preemptively, but if you fail we will have to restrain you to provide the data we need.”

Furthermore, he mentioned that the GRA’s e-commerce unit is diligently working to guarantee that online retail businesses also adhere to tax regulations.

The revenue collection agency has already apprehended more than one hundred business proprietors and managers of various establishments. Additionally, approximately 93 individuals are currently undergoing legal proceedings with the Criminal Investigative Department of the Ghana Police due to their involvement in various tax-related infractions.

Family of 8 suffer unexplained blindness

The Awuku family, residing in Goaso within the Ahafo Region, is grappling with a mysterious eye ailment that has afflicted several of its members.

Among the ten family members, which includes their parents, five males have lost their sight, while one of the three females is displaying symptoms of the same affliction.

In an interview with Kofi Adoma Nwanwani on his Kofi TV channel, the family revealed that none of the five male children were born blind. Rather, the symptoms began to manifest when each of them reached four months of age. These symptoms involve eye tremors and blurred vision, particularly in the evenings.

The family’s plight is exacerbated by financial difficulties, as they lack a source of income. Their mother, who used to be the family’s sole breadwinner, passed away from a stroke in 2021, and their father suffered a gunshot injury to his eye. Consequently, none of them are gainfully employed, making life extremely challenging.

Securing even one meal a day has become a daunting task, and they also face challenges in maintaining healthy relationships with women.

Joshua Awuku mentioned that, with assistance from the public, he could establish an Information Center in his community to generate income and provide support for his family.

Anglogold Ashanti shareholders approve Johannesburg primary listing switch

On Friday, August 18, 2023, shareholders of Anglogold Ashanti voted overwhelmingly in favor of the company’s plan to transition its primary stock exchange listing from Johannesburg to New York.

This pivotal decision marks Anglogold’s exit from South Africa.

In a statement released by the company, it was revealed that over 98% of Anglogold shareholders supported this transition, surpassing the required majority threshold of at least 75%. The vote took place during a virtual meeting held on Friday.

This reorganization strategy also encompasses the relocation of Anglogold’s corporate headquarters from Johannesburg to London.

AngloGold Ashanti, with roots dating back to the establishment of its forerunner by industrialist Ernest Oppenheimer a century ago, completed the divestment of its South African mines in 2020.

The challenging geological conditions associated with some of the world’s deepest gold deposits had made mining in South Africa increasingly difficult and costly. Consequently, the company redirected its focus towards more lucrative mining operations in countries such as Ghana, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Australia, and the Americas.

Alberto Calderon, the CEO of Anglogold, has emphasized that a primary listing in New York would provide the company with access to the largest pool of gold capital in the world.

Dormabin-Adumadum residents threaten demo over bad roads

A group of disgruntled residents residing in Adumadum and its neighboring areas have issued a warning of potential protests in the upcoming weeks.

Their grievance pertains to the dire state of the Dormabin-Adumadum road, located within the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region.

Benard Tafu, a prominent figure at Kunda junction, conveyed their intention to the Ghana News Agency. They have resolved to obstruct the primary route from Dormabin to Okanease, as well as all entry points leading to Asukawkaw, as a means to emphasize their demands.

Their appeal extends to the government and Municipal Authorities, urging them to promptly rehabilitate the road network. They underscored the significance of this initiative, citing its strategic location and its potential to bolster the constituency’s revenue generation.

Dennis Yaw Kumah, a community leader in Adumadum, expressed their frustration, explaining that numerous pleas made over the years to successive administrations, through the Krachi East Municipal Assembly, have yielded no meaningful results.

The dire condition of the road, they argue, has imposed severe economic hardships on the local populace.

Additionally, they highlighted a collapsed bridge at Kunda junction, which hinders access to healthcare facilities and local businesses for pregnant women and traders from their communities. Peter Tafu, the Assembly member for the Electoral Area, stressed that discussions within the Assembly have taken place during annual meetings.

However, they are now urging authorities to take immediate action to construct a new bridge and improve the condition of their feeder road.

Aston Villa has secured the services of Italy’s Nicolo Zaniolo from Galatasaray on a loan basis, pending the approval of a successful visa application.

Additionally, it’s reported that Aston Villa will possess an option to make the signing permanent.

Aged 24, Zaniolo is poised to step into the role vacated by Emiliano Buendia, who recently suffered a significant knee ligament injury.

Zaniolo, an attacking midfielder, had recently joined Galatasaray from Roma in January, but he is now on his way to the Premier League to represent Aston Villa.

He spoke about the move on Villa’s website, saying: “Aston Villa is one of the best teams in England and in the Premier League.

“I want to play and show my quality. Unai Emery is one of the greatest coaches in the world. And for me, this is a big occasion to show my quality.

“For the team, it’s a chance to do big things.”

Villa sporting director Monchi signed Zaniolo for Roma, developing a relationship that has likely helped the Midlands outfit seal the quickfire deal.

He scored the winning goal as the Serie A side won the inaugural Europa Conference League in 2022 — a competition Villa will compete in for the first time this term.

  • Ransford Gyampo: My take on the possible deployment of ECOWAS Troops to Niger

Ransford Gyampo: My take on the possible deployment of ECOWAS Troops to Niger

Coups are bad and there is no justification whatsoever for it. In the view of Plato, soldiers have no business governing a country.

They must remain guardians and allow the Philosopher King alone to govern. But many times, there are no Philosopher Kings in Africa and so, coups happen. When they occur, they require a very serious thinking process and analysis to handle them. Sometimes, a military response may be the way to deal with them. At other times, pure diplomacy may be required.

The Niger situation is quite different from the Gambian situation and in my honest opinion, would require a more tactful diplomacy than military response. In Gambia, the international community was ad idem that Yahaya Jammeh had to leave and there were virtually no foreign military bases that had special interests in his country. His soldiers were no longer loyal to him and hence he had to flee when ECOWAS troops moved in on him.

The situation in Niger is however quite different. The military junta there are ready to fight. Russia has an interest in providing para-military services to ward off terrorist in Niger for a fee. They are in full support of the current military junta.

The Americans want their company Chevron to pass gas pipelines from Nigeria through Niger to Algeria for European consumption, a move to diversify European dependence on Russia gas.

In fact, because of this plan ‘Nordstrom’ or ‘Nordstream’ pipeline from Russia to Europe was blown up in the ocean through sabotage with the Americans being prime suspects. So for Russia, they will support the Niger junta especially when the latter even made it clear that they’re halting exportation of uranium to France.

France has an interest in the uranium of Niger and is willing to fight in defence of the ousted leader. So, France and America would be against the military junta while Russia will fight on the side of the junta. Burkina Faso has also declared her intentions to fight any country or group that attacks Niger militarily and Nigeria may be unable to provide troops as its parliament has voted against a military response to what is happening in Niger.

How will ECOWAS troops fare? We must be careful not to be caught in a crossfire of a potential proxy war, where soldiers may be innocently massacred. Given that there is no unanimity on the use of military force in handling the crisis in Niger even among ECOWAS countries, we must interrogate the resolve to use soldiers rather than diplomacy critically, and with some trepidation.

I know that some African leaders who have governed poorly, are pushing for the deployment of military force to handle the Niger crisis, as a way of ensuring that no one dreams about coups. Yes no one must dream about coups, but the best antidote to coups isn’t the use of military force, it is good governance. African leaders who are scared of military coups now have an excellent opportunity to govern well in addressing basic human needs of the ordinary people as a sure way to make the idea of coups unpopular.

If all the countries that are teaming up to ally with Niger decide to do so, ECOWAS forces may not succeed, and when there is massacre of forces of African descent, it potentially can infuriate soldiers to react against their governments that deployed their colleagues.

We must never support any coup anywhere in the world. But when they occur, we must strategise appropriately to deal with them. Not all coups can be responded to with military force. Some, especially in the Niger case would require a more nuanced and tactful diplomacy.

    Man defiles ex’s 15-year-old daughter

The Gender-Based Violence Court at the Police Headquarters in Accra is currently hearing a defilement case involving a male driver.

Kingsley Asamoah is accused of defiling his ex-lover’s 15-year-old daughter on five occasions.

Kwabena Kodua Obiri Yeboah, who presided over the case, granted the accused bail in the sum of GHC 30,000 with two sureties.

The matter has been adjourned to September 7, 2023.

According to the prosecution, led by Detective Chief Inspector Simon Tekpor, the complainant is a hairdresser and a former lover of Kingsley who lives in Lartebiokorshie with her daughter.

The prosecution said Asamoah and the complainant had an intimate relationship during which she fell pregnant but miscarried.

    Their relationship, however, ended.

However, because of the accused’s previous relationship with the complainant, the victim has been running errands for Asamoah.

The prosecution said Asamoah exploited his relationship with the victim to have sex with her behind the complainant’s back.

According to the prosecutor, on July 21, 2023, at about 2030 hours, Asamoah asked the victim to go and buy him a mosquito incense.

When the victim returned with the incense, Asamoah began to fondle her and eventually had sex with her.

The victim cried after the sexual act and went to inform her mother about the ordeal.

She told her mother that that was the fifth time that Asamoah had had sex with her.

On July 22, 2023, the complainant reported the incident to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit, and she was given a medical report form to take the victim to the hospital for treatment.

Asamoah was arrested after the complainant identified him.

Dr. Bawumia said: “I am always driven by public service, not the desire for personal gains”.

“It is the reason I am offering myself, first to be elected flagbearer of our party, and then I can offer myself to the people of Ghana so that I can continue to contribute towards the transformation of our country,” Dr Bawumia noted.

  • National cage-free farmers network gets more members

National cage-free farmers network gets more members

The movement to eliminate battery cages from poultry farming is rapidly gaining traction, with an increasing number of farmers nationwide embracing the adoption of free cages for raising domestic birds.

During a recent workshop in Koforidua, a significant stride was made as 31 out of 45 poultry farmers in the Eastern region appended their signatures to join the national cage-free farmers network. This step signifies their commitment to adhering to enhanced welfare standards by transitioning away from battery cages and opting for improved methods of raising chickens.

This advocacy endeavor stems from the efforts of the Animal Welfare League, a group of veterinarians hailing from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The cage-free initiative is focused on eradicating the mistreatment of layer and broiler chickens within what is considered to be ‘cruel’ conventional cages.

Furthermore, the initiative holds the aspiration of positioning Ghana as the inaugural African nation to successfully implement a comprehensive cage-free poultry framework.

As of now, the network comprises 62 farmers based in the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions. Remarkably, two of the participating farmers have pledged to entirely eliminate the use of battery cages.

Dr. Daniel Abiliba, Director of the Animal Welfare League, has refuted misconceptions surrounding cage-free systems. He emphasized that this endeavor aims to deliver products of elevated welfare standards to both consumers and corporate entities.

“Some farmers think the popularly practiced deep litter system yields lower production. But that’s not really the case. I call on all the farmers to abandon battery cages as a housing system for the animals,” he said.

He extended an invitation to farmers to become part of the national cage-free farmers network and directory. This collaborative effort engages industry and research stakeholders to ensure the provision of products with superior welfare standards for consumers and businesses.

Meanwhile, Victor Oppong Agyei, President of the Ghana National Association of Poultry Farmers, expressed concern over the existing state of the nation’s poultry sector. In light of economic and health-related challenges faced by the industry, he urged farmers to regard the well-being of their avian stock as an instrumental factor in enhancing productivity.

A recent survey conducted in the Accra metropolis revealed that nearly half of the respondents expressed a preference for free-range eggs in comparison to eggs sourced from hens kept under confining conditions.

The network currently boasts an estimated annual egg production exceeding 10 million eggs. Notably, this collective supplies free-range eggs to both local and international corporate establishments, encompassing hospitality entities and manufacturing firms.

  • We are going to Niger with our own resources – ECOWAS

We are going to Niger with our own resources – ECOWAS

Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Abdel-Fatau Musah, has conveyed that ECOWAS is deploying its resources to Niger and is open to collaboration with any willing organizations to provide assistance.

“The request for Chapter VII is often done in order to secure resources, access contributions from the UN coffers. The Heads of State are saying we are going to Niger with our resources. Anybody who wants to help us, fair enough,” he said.

Mr. Musah made these remarks during the ongoing 48th Extraordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff (CDS) in Accra.

This two-day gathering serves as a platform for the CDS to devise strategies for potential military intervention in Niger.

The powers outlined in Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter empower the UN Security Council to uphold global peace. It grants the Council authority to assess threats to peace, breaches of peace, or acts of aggression and to take both military and non-military measures to reestablish international peace and security.

Since Monday, July 26, the Military Junta of Niger Republic has detained President Mohamed Bazoum, his family, and members of his Cabinet.

The military coup in Niger marks the fifth occurrence of such an event in just over three years within the West African sub-region. Other countries experiencing coup d’états include Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau.

Following the junta’s takeover, ECOWAS leaders recently decided to activate a standby force for potential intervention. The military chiefs’ responsibilities include preparing an action plan for Niger contingent upon approval from ECOWAS leaders.

General Christopher Gwabin Musa, Chief of Defence Staff for the Federal Republic of Nigeria, offered reassurance that the group would undertake appropriate actions.

“We must confront them head-on, dwell upon our shared experiences, wisdom and the strength of our collective resolve. Our decisions will be a strong message about our commitment to democracy, our intolerance for unconstitutional changes of government and our dedication to regional stability,” he said.

The path that lay before ECOWAS was not an easy one, but it ought to strive to restore democracy and sovereignty to the Republic of Niger, General Musa said.

“We must not allow the people of Niger to suffer. Our resolve is to protect the integrity of our states and protect ECOWAS citizens.”

Mr Dominic Nitiwul, the Minister of Defence,  said the meeting was to restore constitutional order in the Community and a platform for the CDS to put in plans to meet ECOWAS directives to restore peace.

“Members are united in carrying out directives and measures of ECOWAS for democracy restoration in Niger,” he said.

He urged the CDS to continue to be loyal to their heads of state, ECOWAS and defend their nations and territorial interpretations of their nations with the right tools.

“You have the right that your people choose their leaders in a free and fair manner.”

“Let us stay united, loyal and committed to the decisions of our various Heads of State and governments and replicate what the past military leaders of ECOWAS did in countries like Liberia, Sierra Leone, the Gambia and Guinea Bissau,” Mr Nitiwulu, also the New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Bimbila, said.

In a connected development, ECOWAS issued an order last week for its standby force to reinstate constitutional order in the Niger Republic.

Mr. Omar Alieu Touray, the President of ECOWAS, formally declared this resolution during the Extraordinary Meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, August 10, 2023.

Mr. Touray urged the African Union (AU), collaborating nations, and institutions to endorse the resolution adopted by the sub-regional entity.

He conveyed that all attempts to engage in dialogue with the military junta in Niger Republic had been met with defiance by the coup leaders. This stance was taken in the face of the persistent detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family.

  • I am not working to remove GACL MD – Paul Adom-Otchere

Chairman of the Board of Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL), Paul Adom-Otchere, has refuted any involvement in a scheme to oust the company’s Managing Director, Pamela Djamson-Tettey.

On Wednesday, the Airport Workers Union claimed that Mr. Adom-Otchere was colluding to dismiss Pamela Djamson-Tettey due to her refusal to conform to his directives concerning certain aspects of the company’s management.

“Our information is that the Board Chair is championing the course of removing the MD and this is causing a lot of agitations in the industry.

“From where we sit the staff will not let us rest, they have been calling us 24 hours wanting to know what is happening,” the Divisional Chairman of the Public Service Workers Union at the Ghana Airport Company Limited, Abdul-Issaka Bamba, is quoted to have said by Joy News.

He added: “It is based on that that we are communicating with our staff to stay calm while their leaders see how the story unfolds and get back to them.”

The agitations, he said, affect the progress of the company as there is no harmony between the leaders.

“We know where we came from…the past few years we were not having this harmony and were battered by Covid-19. All that is getting to normal as work is picking,” he said.

He therefore pleaded with management not to engage in such disharmony to put the company in disarray.

Meanwhile, Mr Adom-Otchere says the Union in their letter failed to give “real example of the said plot.”

According to the GACL Board Chair, he will be meeting the Union to “understand because I have no idea of what they are talking about.”
