Japan redefines rape and raises age of consent

In a significant overhaul of sex crime laws, Japan has recently enacted legislation that redefines rape and raises the age of consent.

The revised definition of rape now encompasses “non-consensual sexual intercourse” instead of solely “forcible sexual intercourse,” aligning Japan’s legal definition with that of many other countries.

Furthermore, the age of consent, previously set at a mere 13 years, has been raised to 16 years, bringing it more in line with international standards.

Critics argue that the previous laws failed to adequately protect individuals coerced into engaging in sexual acts, resulting in underreporting of such assaults. Additionally, the inconsistent application of these laws by courts has fueled calls for reform.

The newly passed laws, approved by the upper house of the Diet (Japan’s parliament) on Friday, explicitly outline eight scenarios in which it may be challenging for a victim to “form, express, or fulfill an intention not to consent” to sexual intercourse.

These scenarios include instances where the victim is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, subject to violence or threats, or experiences fear or shock. Another scenario appears to address situations involving an abuse of power, where the victim is apprehensive about the potential consequences of refusing sexual advances.

Previously, Japan had one of the lowest age of consent among developed nations. However, a person who has had sex with a minor aged 13 to 15 will be punished only if the person is five or more years older than the minor.

Meanwhile, the statute of limitations or legal window for reporting rape will be extended to 15 years from 10 years, to give survivors more time to come forward.

The changes also ban “photo voyeurism” which includes upskirting and secret filming of sexual acts, among other things.

It follows multiple rape acquittals in 2019 that caused national outcry and helped spur a nationwide Flower Demo campaign against sexual violence. On the 11th day of every month since April 2019, activists have gathered throughout Japan to demand justice and show solidarity with sexual assault survivors.

But some activists have told the BBC that these legal reforms address only one part of the problem.

“Distorted ideas” about sex and consent that have pervaded for generations must be addressed, says Kazuko Ito, vice-president of the Tokyo-based Human Rights Now.

Survivors of sexual assault who go public also often receive threats and nasty comments online.

Even if the reforms are enacted, survivors must feel empowered to report their attacks, activists say.

In Japan, survivors of sexual violence are often reluctant to come forward because of stigma and shame. A 2021 survey by the government showed that only about 6 per cent of women and men reported an assault half of the women polled felt they couldn’t do so because of “embarrassment”.

“Nationwide learning and educational effort is essential for this norm to be embedded in the society. This is only way to prevent actual sexual violence along with ending culture of impunity,” Ms Ito says.

Japan should also offer more financial and psychological help for sexual assault survivors, lawyer and rights advocate Sakura Kamitani told the BBC.

Attackers too should receive support to prevent recidivism, she added.

Kyiv under attack as African leaders visit on peace mission

As African leaders embark on a peace mission to Ukraine, the city of Kyiv has come under attack from drones and missiles.

The delegation, comprised of seven leaders including representatives from South Africa and Egypt, will hold discussions with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv before proceeding to Russia tomorrow.

Their primary objective is to engage in dialogue with both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the aim of achieving a ceasefire and fostering lasting peace.

However, this mission unfolds amidst Kyiv’s launch of a counter-offensive against the ongoing Russian invasion, leading to a surge in intensified fighting.

As tensions escalate, it becomes imperative for the African leaders to navigate the complex landscape in pursuit of a resolution.

In a separate development, a recent investigation by the BBC has uncovered that the number of Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine is significantly higher than the figure officially released by Moscow.

The investigation estimates that at least 25,000 Russian soldiers have lost their lives, four times the reported number. This revelation adds further gravity to the conflict and underscores the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to quell the violence.

Simultaneously, in Brussels, NATO defense ministers are convening to discuss the situation, emphasizing the international community’s concern over the escalating crisis.

Meanwhile, the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum is underway, with President Putin anticipated to deliver a pivotal keynote address, likely addressing the ongoing conflict and its impact on the regional and global economies.

  • Spotify halts podcast deal with Harry and Meghan

Spotify halts podcast deal with Harry and Meghan

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, have ended their podcast deal with Spotify.

In a joint statement, their company, Archewell Audio, and Spotify announced that they have mutually agreed to part ways and will not be renewing Meghan’s podcast, Archetypes, for a second season.

The podcast deal, estimated to be worth $25 million, was one of the major commercial agreements the couple secured after stepping back from their royal duties and relocating to the United States in 2020.

Prince Harry expressed his hope that the podcasts would bring forward diverse perspectives and unheard voices.

Archetypes, which ran for 12 episodes from August 2022, featured Meghan engaging in conversations with influential figures like Serena Williams and Mariah Carey, focusing on the stereotypes faced by women.

The podcast garnered recognition and won the top podcast award at the People’s Choice Award in Los Angeles in December.

While the specific reasons for the termination of the Spotify deal have not been disclosed, both parties expressed pride in the series they created together. The end of this partnership marks a change in the couple’s podcasting endeavors.

At the time, Meghan wrote: “I loved digging my hands into the process, sitting up late at night in bed, working on the writing and creative.

“And I loved digging deep into meaningful conversation with my diverse and inspiring guests, laughing and learning with them. It has been such a labour of love.”

The Wall Street Journal quoted an Archewell spokeswoman as saying Meghan was “continuing to develop more content for the Archetypes audience on another platform”.

When the agreement with Spotify was first announced, it was billed as a relationship which would produce several series – but in the end, only one materialised.

American media reports suggest the royal couple failed to meet the productivity benchmark required by Spotify, and therefore wouldn’t be receiving the full value of the contract.

Since splitting from the royal family, Harry and Meghan have looked to capitalise on their global fame in order to become financially independent.

That has included a multi-million dollar content deal with Netflix, and Harry’s huge contract with Penguin Books, which has already produced his autobiography Spare.

It follows Spotify’s announcement last week that it was cutting 200 jobs in its podcast division after a period of heavy investment in the medium, saying it was embarking on a “strategic realignment”.

Mr Prosper Agbeli, Chairman of the Akatsi South and North Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), on his part, has since condemned the act.

Price of LPG to fall by 7.0% effective tomorrow

Consumers of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) are expected to see a fall in the price of the commodity by 7 per cent effective tomorrow, June 16, 2023.

The LPG Marketers Association has attributed the local decline to the 10% drop in the prices of LPG on the international market.

According to the Association’s Vice President, Gabriel Kumi, “competition can drive that down to about 10%”.

In April this year, the price of LPG declined by 5% with the product selling at GHS12.40 per liter from GHS13.20. This will be the fourth consecutive time price of the commodity has seen a marginal drop this year.

In its May 2023 Monetary Sector Report, the Bank of Ghana noted that crude oil prices have broadly trended downwards since June 2022.

From US$117.2 per barrel in June 2022, prices plunged to US$81.3 per barrel in December 2022, before moving slightly up to US$82.7 per barrel in April 2023.

Prices were pressured by concerns over the health of the global economy and prospects of oil demand, despite the announced production cut by OPEC+, the Central Bank noted.

  • Tricycle riders to sue KMA over restriction within Central Business District

Tricycle riders to sue KMA over restriction within Central Business District

The leaders of the Pragyia Drivers Association in Kumasi have expressed their intention to take legal action against the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) regarding the restriction on their operation within the Central Business District (CBD).

The directive forms part of KMA’s efforts to address the growing issue of indiscipline among tricycle riders and alleviate congestion in the CBD.

But the leaders of the Pragyia Drivers Association think otherwise and believe that seeking interpretation from the court will bring finality to the issue.

Mohammed Alhanssan, the leader of the Pragyia Drivers Association, holds the assertion that the assembly’s decision amounts to discriminatory practices in the transport industry.

He emphasized that tricycles, like any other registered motor vehicles, hold legal permission from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to operate within the city, hence the need for legal redress.

“The KMA decision to ban tricycles from operating in some parts of the city is discriminatory so we are seeking legal interpretation at court and also to stop the KMA on their decision,” he said on Otec FM.

He added that “the KMA should rather ban ‘trotro’ vehicles and long vehicles from entering and operating in the CBD if they want to decongest the city”.

Meanwhile, KMA’s directive which was originally scheduled to commence on June 15, has been postponed to an undisclosed date to allow for further consultations with transport unions.

“We realized that the education took a bit longer, so the directive, which was scheduled to take effect on the 15th, cannot take effect. We are still in the process of sensitization,”  Public Relations Officer (PRO) of KMA, Henrietta Afia Konadu Aboagye told the media.

The assembly’s transport department and the MTTD will enforce the directive by being present at various checkpoints once it comes into force.

“The recalcitrant ones who will force their way into the CBD will have their vehicles impounded and taken to the Central Police Station or the assembly’s towing site, where they will be fined,” Henrietta Afia Konadu Aboagye added.

Security analyst warns against using Judiciary to hinder Mahama’s presidential ambition

A security policy expert, Anthony Acquaye, has cautioned that the judiciary’s handling of a case against former President John Dramani Mahama could potentially create chaos in the country if not approached with care.

The case, brought before the Supreme Court by Kenneth Kuranchie, challenges the former president’s constitutional right to seek re-election.

Mr Acquaye emphasized the need for cautious handling of such cases, stating that they serve as indicators that have the potential to disrupt a nation.

In a statement Acquaye highlighted the importance of carefully navigating through this case to avoid any destabilizing effects.

“It is important to stress that the early warning signs or indicators to throw a country into chaos is not far from us as a country.

“For this reason, I vehemently deem it important to use this medium to send a word of caution to all the security architectures in this country, including the judiciary, that it is eminent on their side to embrace the spirit of patriotism and put the peace and the stability of our dear country, Ghana, first in their forward decisions, and that any attempt to use the judiciary or legal approach to restrain or stop the former president John Dramani Mahama from contesting the 2024 general election will throw the country into chaos,” he said.

Anthony Acquaye is a security policy expert

The security policy expert added that while the role of the judiciary in the determination of such matters cannot be downplayed, it must be guided by recent disaffections it has received from the NDC.

He cited the most recent judgement by the Supreme Court that made the 2020 election of James Gyakye Quayson as a Member of Parliament null and void.

“Let me emphasize that the judiciary plays a crucial role in ensuring national security and its recent perception by the citizens as a biased institution is a clear warning sign that citizens may be forced to take the law into their own hands if it happens that the former president is restrained from contesting the 2024 general election by the Supreme Court.

“What is more dangerous in relation to this development is that in recent months, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), in particular, has accused the judiciary of being biased because the party has lost a string of cases before the courts, including the most recent verdict on Hon James Gyakye Quayson, Member of Parliament for Assin North in the Central Region, who the NDC believe the government has manipulated the Supreme Court to order for his name to be removed from parliament,” he added.

Anthony Acquaye also stressed that he is greatly worried that there seems to be a trend where politicians think they can have their way to power using the judiciary.

ANY ATTEMPT TO USE THE JUDICIARY TO PREVENT THE FORMER PRESIDENT, JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA FROM CONTESTING THE 2024 GENERAL ELECTION WILL THROW THE COUNTRY INTO CHAOS ~ Security Analyst Warned.
    ……………………………………..

It is important to stress that, the early warning signs or indicators to throw a country into chaos is not far from us as a country. For this reason I vehemently deem it important to use this medium to send a word of caution to all the security architectures in this country including the judiciary that, it is eminent on their side to embrace the spirit of patriotism and put the peace and the stability of our dear country Ghana first in their forward decisions and that any attempt to use the judiciary or legal approach to restrain or stop the former president John Dramani Mahama from contesting the 2024 general election will throw the country into chaos.

Let me emphasize that, the judiciary plays a crucial role in ensuring national security
and its recent perception by the citizens as biased institution is a clear warning sign that, citizens may be forced to take the law into their own hands if it happens that the former president is restrain from contesting the 2024 general election by the supreme court.

What is more dangerous in relation to this development is that, in recent months, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in particular has accused the judiciary of being biased because the party has lost a string of cases before the courts including the most recent verdict on Hon James Gyakye Quayson, member of parliament for Assin North in the Central region who, the NDC believe the government has manipulated the supreme court to order for his name to be removed from parliament.

Although judiciary role is paramount in helping to safeguard the security of the country, injustice delivery can throw the country into chaos. The ultimate responsibility to safeguard the peace of this country lies squarely at the feet of members of Ghana’s judiciary system who are entrusted by the law with the power to ensure effective justice delivery.

In fact, as a student of peace, I was taught of a number of approaches that can be use to ensure peace and among those approaches is the legal approach. It is also important to stress on the fact that, this same legal approach to peace can cause conflict or war if justice is denied.

I must say vehemently that, am really worried about this development in our body politics where politicians think they can have their way to power using the judiciary, most especially under a regime of governmednt beìng characterised by the realism sort of behaviour.

Witnessing the recent unanimous decision trend by the supreme court gives me a strong impression that anything can happen without the court considering the security implications of it’s decision.

I say with my strong analytical spectacle that Ghana must learn from the current state of Senegal.

  • When and how bank staff began stealing GHS1.2m from customers’ accounts for iPhone, Dubai trip

When and how bank staff began stealing GHS1.2m from customers’ accounts for iPhone, Dubai trip

Security agencies have apprehended Emmanuel Sakyi Afriyie, a 25-year-old contract staff member of a prominent bank, on charges of reportedly embezzling approximately GH¢1.2 million from customers’ bank accounts.

As a Processing Officer stationed at the Osu branch, Afriyie’s responsibilities included assisting customers with various tasks such as loan processing, T-bill processing, debit card processing, dormant account activation, and customer account maintenance.

Given the nature of his job description, Afriyie had access to and worked on multiple accounts.

The Head of Fraud Detection and Operations at the bank is the complainant in the case.

    How the whole operation began:

The accused registered for an online coding course, which the renewable annual subscription fee was US$174.30, equivalent to GH¢2,287.69.

Instead of paying for the course out of his own pocket, the accused rather made the payment on one of the bank’s customer’s Visa card on February 6, 2023.

As a result, the complainant and the Fraud team of the bank were gathering evidence on the matter to engage the accused, but he made a swift move to tender in his resignation letter, effective May 31, 2023.

The sudden resignation and the alleged illegal transaction on the customer’s visa card by the accused person made the bank officials more suspicious to investigate him in other areas.

The complainant, together with the fraud team, made up of the bank’s IT experts, detected that on April 20, 2023 the accused by his own machination accessed one of his colleague’s User ID and password to change the contact number on another customer’s accounts.

So, on April 21, 2023 the accused personally set up an internet and mobile banking access on the same customer’s account, using his own User ID and password, after which he had access and started operating on the account without the victim customer receiving SMS alert.

Therefore, from April 21 to May 12, 2023, the accused with full access to the said account, fraudulently transferred a total of GH¢945,133.00 including charges from the accounts to a number of people.

First and foremost, he transferred GH¢90,000.00 to a girlfriend of another accused person, GH¢180,000.00 to another’s account; GH¢30,000.00 together with other transfers in tranches of GH¢30,000.00 on different dates within the said period to other accused persons accounts in different banks.

On May 9, 2023 from 7:21am to 7:32am, he used another colleague and that of the branch Manager’s Users IDs to change and authorise the contact numbers of eleven customers’ accounts, including the account of the deceased judge and the former IGP, who is also deceased and other customers and replaced them with only one contact phone number.

The prosecutor told the court that the accused used eleven minutes to complete these processes, after which he used his own User ID to set up online and mobile banking for these accounts on May 10, 2023.

On May 11, 2023 he transferred tranches of GH¢50,000.00 to other accounts and repeated that the next day.

From those transfers, the receivers stated in their respective investigation cautioned statements that the accused came to their shops to purchase Iphone 14 Pro Max and requested for their bank accounts details and forwarded the same to him to effect those transfers into their accounts.

On May 12, 2023 he was arrested by the Police in respect of the Visa Card theft and was granted Police enquiry bail to be reporting.

On May 15, 2023, the complainant on behalf of the bank petitioned the Director General of CID in respect of GH¢1,207,017.00 theft detected in furtherance to the Visa Card case.

Interestingly, when he was contacted to report himself to police, he refused to show up, meanwhile, effort to compel his surety to produce him also failed.

    Arrest

On June 4, 2023, the accused together with his girlfriend, who stood as surety for him attempted to escape from the jurisdiction to Dubai, but he was arrested at the Kotoka International Airport by the Ghana Immigration Service and handed over to the police.

The investigation so far has revealed that the accused, together with his accomplices, within the period of April and May 2023, stole a total amount of GH¢1,209,304.69 from the various customers’ accounts.

The police are still investigating the matter to trace and arrest all the remaining accused persons as well as the proceeds of crime.

  • Football icon McQueen dies at age 70

Football icon McQueen dies at age 70

Gordon McQueen, a former centre-back for Manchester United, Leeds United, and the Scotland national team, has sadly passed away at the age of 70.

McQueen was a key figure in Leeds United’s triumph in winning the English First Division in 1974, and he also played a significant role in Manchester United’s FA Cup victory in 1983.

In January 2021, McQueen was diagnosed with vascular dementia, a condition that his family believed might have been linked to the repeated heading of the ball during his playing career.

Hayley McQueen, his daughter and a sports broadcaster, shared the news of his passing on Instagram, expressing her family’s grief in a brief statement.

She wrote: “Beyond heartbroken to announce we have lost our wonderful dad.

“I thought when the day came I’d be prepared and feel a sense of relief that he is no longer trying to battle this awful disease, but I just feel numb.

“I’m hoping we can now remember him for the man he was and not the man he became this last few years.”

He joined the Reds from Leeds United and was part of our 1983 FA Cup-winning team, when Brighton & Hove Albion were defeated in a replay at Wembley.

When leaving in 1985, the ex-Scotland international had amassed 229 appearances for the club, scoring 26 goals from centre-half.

His coaching spell took him to Middlesbrough, where he worked under close pal and former Old Trafford team-mate Bryan Robson.

Flags are flying at half-mast at Old Trafford as a mark of respect to Gordon and in tribute to his service, on and off the field.

A statement issued by the McQueen family reads: “It is with the heaviest of hearts we announce the passing of Gordon McQueen, 70, who died at home in the early morning today, leaving behind his wife Yvonne, daughters Hayley and Anna, son Eddie and his beloved grandchildren Rudi, Etta and Ayla.

“We hope that, as well as creating many great football memories, he’ll be remembered most for his character. Our house was always full of friends, family and football, just as it was in his last few months as he fought so bravely in what became a very cruel battle against dementia.

“The disease may have taken him too soon but he definitely lived life to the full, the ultimate entertainer, the absolute heart and soul of every occasion, the most fun dad anyone could wish for.

“Huge thanks go to the wonderful staff at Herriot Hospice Homecare for their outstanding care, the utterly incredible Marie Curie team, who were there at the end with Gordon’s wife and daughters, and Head for Change, for the emotional support and respite care.

“Also to our wonderful friends and family, who rallied around at the worst of times,  going above and beyond. For that, we are so very grateful.”

Max Park, an acclaimed speedcuber and Guinness World Records Hall of Famer from the USA, has set a new record for the fastest time to solve a 3x3x3 rotating puzzle cube.

The 21-year-old achieved a remarkable time of 3.13 seconds, surpassing the previous record set by Yusheng Du of China in 2018 by 0.34 seconds.

Max accomplished this feat at the Pride in Long Beach 2023 event held in California, USA, on June 11, 2023.

Prior to this achievement, Max’s fastest single solve stood at 3.63 seconds, placing him in second position behind Yusheng Du’s record of 3.47 seconds.

Max Park is widely recognized in the speedcubing community and holds numerous records in various cube categories.

He currently holds both the single solve and average solve world records for the 4x4x4 cube, 5x5x5 cube, 6x6x6 cube, and 7x7x7 cube. Additionally, he previously shared the 3x3x3 average record with Tymon Kolasiński of Poland, until it was surpassed by 9-year-old Yiheng Wang from China on March 12, 2023, with a time of 4.69 seconds.

With this latest shake-up to the speedcubing world, we edge ever closer to seeing a sub-three-second record being set. Will Max be the one to finally do it?

Max is no stranger to setting seemingly impossible records. When he set the 7x7x7 single record with a time of 1 minute 40 seconds, cubing veteran Erik Akkersdijk described it as the most impressive thing he’d ever seen.

“The record will likely stand for some time,” Erik said. He was wrong though – Max went on to smash it in 2022 with a time of 1 minute 35 seconds.

    Max Park solving the cube

Diagnosed with autism, Max serves as an inspiration for many people who are on the spectrum, as well as many who aren’t.

Max’s parents, Schawn and Miki, said that cubing has been “a good therapy” for Max.

“There was a time when Max couldn’t even open water bottles, but he showed interest in solving Rubik’s Cubes,” they said.

Max has come a long way since then, and he’s now an official ambassador for Rubik’s.

He has become a prominent figure in the cubing community, and over the years he has formed a close friendship with fellow speedcubing legend Feliks Zemdegs. The pair featured in the 2020 Netflix documentary The Speed Cubers.

Following his motto of “don’t think, just solve,” it’s only a matter of time before Max sets his next world record, and we can’t wait to see it.

Manager of Harvard Medical School’s morgue, 3 others charged with selling body parts

Four individuals, including the manager of Harvard Medical School’s morgue, Cedric Lodge, have been charged with the illegal trade of stolen human remains.

Lodge is alleged to have taken various body parts, including heads, brains, skin, and bones, from cadavers donated to Harvard University’s medical school and sold them online.

Alongside his wife, Denise, Lodge is accused of selling these body parts to buyers in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts between 2018 and 2021.

According to prosecutors, Lodge exploited his role as the manager of the “Anatomical Gifts Program” at Harvard Medical School to dismember cadavers that were initially donated for medical research.

Typically, donated bodies are utilized by Harvard students for studying and practicing medical procedures. Once the school completes its use of the cadavers, the remains are either returned to the families or interred in the university’s medical cemetery through cremation.

However, the indictment alleges that Lodge and his wife engaged in the unlawful activity of harvesting, selling, and shipping body parts from these donated cadavers instead.

“At times, Cedric Lodge allowed [others] to enter the morgue at Harvard Medical School and examine cadavers to choose what to purchase,” according to a statement from the US Attorney’s Office.

Katrina Maclean of Salem, Massachusetts, and Joshua Taylor, of West Lawn, Pennsylvania, allegedly bought body parts.

The manager of Harvard Medical School’s morgue allegedly harvested, sold and shipped human remains for years, according to prosecutors

According to the charging statement, in October 2020, Ms Maclean purchased dissected faces for $600 (£473) that she intended to have tanned into leather.

Ms Maclean is the owner of a store called Kat’s Creepy Creations. Social media accounts for the business show she specialised in up-cycling dolls into gothic, blood-soaked, horror novelties. It is unclear if the cadaver parts were used in her products. The indictment alleges she stored and sold human remains at the store.

Mr Taylor allegedly made 39 electronic payments to Ms Lodge for stolen body parts over the course of four years, totalling more than $37,000 (£29,226). The indictment included a grim reference to a PayPal memo for a purchase of $1,000 (£790) that allegedly read, “head number 7”.

“Some crimes defy understanding,” said United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam in a statement. “The theft and trafficking of human remains strikes at the very essence of what makes us human.”

Both Cedric and Denise Lodge refused to answer reporters’ questions after making an initial appearance at a New Hampshire federal courthouse on Wednesday.

All four defendants have been indicted on conspiracy and interstate transport of stolen goods charges. If convicted, they each face up to 15 years in prison.

Glenda Jackson, the celebrated actress who won Oscars for her performances in “Women in Love” and “A Touch of Class,” has passed away at the age of 87, according to her agent.

In a statement, her agent Lionel Larner said: “Glenda Jackson, two-time Academy Award-winning actress and politician, died peacefully at her home in Blackheath, London this morning after a brief illness with her family at her side.

“She recently completed filming The Great Escaper in which she co-starred with Michael Caine.”

During the 1970s, Jackson achieved international acclaim for her acting talent, securing two Academy Awards and receiving two additional nominations.

Her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in the BBC drama series “Elizabeth R” also garnered critical acclaim.

In addition to her successful acting career, Jackson demonstrated a deep commitment to politics. Temporarily leaving the entertainment industry behind, she became a Member of Parliament for the Labour Party, representing a constituency in north London from 1992 to 2015.

After her tenure in politics, Jackson made a remarkable return to the screen and earned a BAFTA award for her performance in the television drama “Elizabeth Is Missing” in 2020.

Her contributions to both the entertainment industry and public service leave a lasting legacy.

  • Boris Johnson misled MPs over Partygate deliberately

Boris Johnson misled MPs over Partygate deliberately

It has been alleged that former Prime Minister Boris Johnson knowingly provided false information to the House of Commons regarding lockdown parties at 10 Downing Street.

The committee states that, had it been given the opportunity, it would have suggested a 90-day suspension for Johnson from the House.

A report accuses Johnson of intentionally misleading the House, discrediting the committee, and being complicit in an attempted campaign of abuse and intimidation against the committee.

In addition, the report recommends that the former Prime Minister should not be granted the customary access pass that allows ex-MPs to enter Parliament after their tenure.

Johnson recently resigned as a Tory MP after being provided with an advanced copy of the Privileges Committee’s report. In a strongly-worded statement, he referred to the committee as a “kangaroo court” whose sole objective was to find him guilty, regardless of the evidence.

While Johnson has acknowledged that his statements misled Parliament, he denies having done so intentionally or recklessly.

The recommendations made by the report will ultimately be subject to the decision of the House of Commons as to whether they will be accepted.

Namibia to sell crocodiles to address conflicts

In an effort to mitigate conflicts between humans and wildlife in Namibia’s Kavango and Zambezi regions, the country has decided to sell 40 crocodiles, according to local media reports.

Interested buyers are required to submit their tender offers to the Ministry of Environment by July 17th.

Romeo Muyunda, spokesperson for the ministry, explained that a significant portion of Namibia’s wildlife exists outside national parks, leading to ongoing concerns regarding crocodile attacks on people and livestock in these regions.

Prospective buyers must demonstrate that they have a suitable habitat for the crocodiles and will be responsible for the costs associated with capturing them. Importing the crocodiles will require obtaining permits from the respective countries involved.

New York jury indicts man who strangled NYC subway rider

A former US Marine who was caught on video putting a homeless man in a fatal chokehold on a subway train has been indicted by a New York grand jury.

The decision to indict Daniel Penny on second-degree manslaughter charges comes after prosecutors had already charged him last month.

The grand jury’s decision was necessary to formally proceed with the charges, and Penny is currently out on bail. Penny claims that he acted in self-defense during the incident that took place on May 1st.

Details of the formal charging document are expected to be disclosed at a later date. If convicted of second-degree manslaughter, Penny could face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

The 24-year-old former Marine was initially allowed to leave the scene of Jordan Neely’s death but was later arrested on May 12th. He was taken into custody, handcuffed, and brought to a police station before being released on a $100,000 in-cash bail.

In a video posted on social media on Sunday, Penny stated that he did not have the intention to kill Neely, a 30-year-old homeless man who had reportedly been shouting at subway riders prior to the altercation.

“There’s a common misconception that Marines don’t get scared,” he said in the video.

“We’re actually taught one of our core values is courage, and courage is not the absence of fear but how you handle fear,” he added, saying he felt compelled to confront Mr Neely as he acted erratically towards passengers.

“I was scared for myself but I looked around there were women and children, he was yelling in their faces saying these threats. I just couldn’t sit still.”

Video of the incident captured by a freelance journalist on the train shows the former Marine holding Mr Neely around the neck for two minutes and 55 seconds.

In the video released on Sunday, Mr Penny said the whole interaction was less than five minutes.

“I was listening to music at the time, and he was yelling, so I took my headphones out to hear what he was yelling,” he said.

“And the three main threats that he repeated over and over was ‘I’m going to kill you,’ ‘I’m prepared to go to jail for life,’ and ‘I’m willing to die.’”

Family of Mr Neely say that the second-degree manslaughter charge should be upgraded to murder.

The killing shocked the city and led to questions about the safety of public transit and treatment for mentally ill homeless New Yorkers.

  • Bank staff arrested for stealing GHS1.2m from accounts; buys car, iPhone 14 and ticket to Dubai

Bank staff arrested for stealing GHS1.2m from accounts; buys car, iPhone 14 and ticket to Dubai

A contract staff member of a major bank in Ghana has been apprehended by security agencies on allegations of embezzling approximately GH¢1.2 million from customers’ bank accounts.

The targeted accounts reportedly included those of a deceased former Inspector General of Police and a judge.

According to reports, the accused individual utilized a variety of means to carry out the fraudulent activities.

These included purchasing luxury items such as an iPhone 14 Pro Max and a Toyota Camry vehicle, as well as transferring funds to multiple bank accounts and mobile money accounts belonging to both himself and his accomplices—amounting to a total of 17 different accounts.

Furthermore, it is claimed that the suspect had planned to flee to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, with his girlfriend after purchasing an airplane ticket.

However, law enforcement acted swiftly, initiating surveillance and managing to arrest him at Kotoka International Airport on June 4, 2023.

It is alleged that the accused person obtained his supervisor’s password through covert means. Reportedly, he secretly filmed his boss entering her password using a mobile phone, later reviewing the footage to gain access to her account credentials. He then exploited a two-month period to siphon off funds from various customers’ accounts.

The accused, a 25-year-old named Emmanuel Sakyi Afriyie, has been brought before the court alongside several of his alleged accomplices. While his partners have been granted bail, Emmanuel has been remanded in custody. The charges against him include theft, conspiracy, forgery, and falsification of accounts, amounting to a total of 13 charges.

Meanwhile, eleven other suspected accomplices remain at large, prompting ongoing investigations by the police. Emmanuel is scheduled to appear before Judge Ellen Ofei-Ayeh on June 16, 2023. Despite the charges brought against him, the accused individual has pleaded not guilty to the offenses.

    Facts

The Head of Fraud Detection and Operations at the bank is the complainant in the case.

According to him, the accused person is a resident of Labone and until May 2023, he was contracted as Processing Officer at the bank.

The accused person was employed by the bank as a contract staff in the month of February 2022 and was posted to the Osu branch as a Processing Officer, whose job description was to assist customers in loan processing, T-bill processing, debit card processing, dormant account activation and customer account maintenance among others.

Due to the job description, the accused worked on several accounts.

However, somewhere in February 2023, the accused registered for an online coding course, which the renewable annual subscription fee was US$174.30, equivalent to GH¢2,287.69.

  • Opposition leader warns against Russian nuclear weapons ‘in hands of Belarus dictator’

Opposition leader warns against Russian nuclear weapons ‘in hands of Belarus dictator’

Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the exiled leader of the Belarusian opposition, has expressed concerns about the potential transfer of nuclear weapons from Russia to Belarus, warning of the risks of placing such weapons “in the hands of a crazy dictator.”

Her remarks came after Alexander Lukashenko confirmed that the first “missiles and bombs” had arrived in Belarus.

Speaking to the BBC in Warsaw, Tikhanovskaya criticized Western politicians for their silence regarding the first deployment of tactical nuclear weapons outside of Russia since the collapse of the USSR in 1991.

Lukashenko, the authoritarian leader of Belarus, made the announcement during a staged discussion with a Russian state TV presenter. The setting featured military trucks and equipment carefully positioned in the background.

When asked to clarify his statement about the arrival of weapons, Lukashenko chuckled and replied, “Not all of them. Gradually.”

Lukashenko is widely regarded as a key ally of Russia, and Belarus has been seen as a launchpad for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

In a move seemingly intended to unsettle Ukraine’s Western allies, Lukashenko emphasized that the Russian bombs were “three times more powerful” than those dropped by the US on Nagasaki and Hiroshima during World War Two.

He further claimed that he had not merely requested the nuclear weapons from Putin but had instead demanded their return. Lukashenko justified the need for such weapons as protection against external aggression, a false threat he has used to justify his repression of political opposition.

Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994, declared victory in the disputed 2020 elections, sparking mass protests and a brutal crackdown by the Belarusian KGB security service and riot police.

    Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. File photo
Image caption,Svetlana Tikhanovskaya fled Belarus in 2020 after running against Alexander Lukashenko in presidential elections

Belarus, like Ukraine and Kazakhstan, gave up its nuclear arsenal in the 1990s in return for security guarantees from post-Soviet Russia and the West. That makes this a significant reversal, although there is as yet no proof that the Russian weapons have been delivered.

Mr Putin first announced the transfer in March, pointing out that the US has deployed similar weapons in Europe. He later said the move would only take place when storage sites had been prepared, but Alexander Lukashenko now says Belarus has “more storage sites than village dogs” and several have already been renovated.

Moscow says it will retain control of the missiles, which are tactical – not longer-range strategic weapons.

“I am not planning to fight the US… tactical weapons are fine,” Mr Lukashenko said. “And the Iskander [rocket] travels 500 kilometres (310 miles) or more.”

“This deployment creates no new threat to Nato countries, so they don’t take it seriously,”Ms Tikhanovskaya argued, believing that Western countries see no difference between a missile fired from Russia or from Belarus.

Russia already has nuclear weapons in its western-most Kaliningrad region, putting Poland and the Baltic states well within range.

“But Belarus is our country and we don’t want nuclear weapons,” Ms Tikhanovskaya said. “This is like the last step to keeping our independence. And they [in the West] are staying silent about that.”

  • Police arrest pastors in Tanzania for detaining sick people

Police arrest pastors in Tanzania for detaining sick people

Two church leaders in Tanzania have been arrested by authorities for allegedly unlawfully detaining over 100 sick individuals, whom they promised to heal through prayer and traditional remedies.

The individuals were held in traditional wards, mud-walled huts with brick beds, located around the church in Nyamhinza village, Misungwi district, in the northwestern region of Mwanza.

During their detention, the individuals received no medical treatment or food and were required to find sustenance for themselves until they recovered.

Some had been confined for as long as a month. Local residents raised concerns and informed the police after several individuals who had left hospitals, including a woman who recently gave birth to twins and joined the church, died.

In response, the police intervened, returning the sick individuals to hospitals for proper medical care.

The authorities are now investigating potential deaths and the possibility of hidden bodies nearby. Mwanza regional police commander, Wilbroad Mutafungwa, stated that initial investigations did not uncover any evidence of buried bodies but maintained vigilance on the matter.

The arrested suspects, church leaders William Masum and Kabula Lushika (his wife), were found to be operating without the necessary permits for conducting worship, prayer activities, and traditional healing services.

As of now, the accused individuals have not provided any statements regarding the allegations.

“We are now doing a detailed investigation, including interrogating the suspects. Meanwhile I ask locals with classified information that will help the investigation to come forward and talk to the police,” he said.

The church is said to have been in operation for more than five years.

  • Over 150,000 evacuated from India, Pakistan over cyclone

Over 150,000 evacuated from India, Pakistan over cyclone

A severe cyclone named Biparjoy, meaning “disaster” in Bengali, is approaching India and Pakistan, prompting the evacuation of over 150,000 people in its path.

The cyclone poses a significant threat to homes and crops as it is expected to make landfall in Gujarat, India’s western state, on Thursday evening local time.

Preliminary reports indicate heavy rainfall, rough seas, and high tides along the coastal regions of Gujarat. Cyclone Biparjoy is projected to hit the area between the Jakhau port, situated between Mandvi in Gujarat and Keti Bandar in Pakistan’s Sindh province, sometime between 16:00 and 20:00 local time.

Pakistan’s disaster management agency has issued warnings of storm surges reaching heights of 3-4 meters (10-13 feet) along the coastline from Karachi to Gujarat.

Meanwhile, Alok Pandey, Gujarat’s Relief Commissioner, highlighted that although the cyclone’s speed has decreased, its wind speeds are still expected to be dangerously high at around 110-120 km/h (68-75 mph) during landfall.

India’s meteorological department has cautioned that the cyclone will cause significant damage to roads, thatched houses, and vital infrastructure such as electricity towers and trees along Gujarat’s coast.

Efforts are underway to ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas, with evacuation procedures and emergency measures being implemented. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and providing updates to the public as the cyclone approaches.

The state’s health minister, Rushikesh Patel, asked people to stay where they were and avoid travelling. “Our aim is to ensure zero casualties,” he said.

At least seven deaths were reported amid heavy rains in India this week.

The victims included two children crushed by a collapsing wall, and a woman hit by a falling tree while riding a motorbike, AFP news agency reported.

In Pakistan, the storm is expected to strike the coast of Sindh province. Authorities have already evacuated 81,000 people from the south-eastern coast and set up 75 relief camps at schools.

Pakistan’s climate change minister Sherry Rehman said that Karachi, the province’s largest city with a population of more than 20 million, was not under immediate threat but emergency measures were being taken.

Meteorologists warned that high tides could inundate low-lying areas along the coasts.

Several parts of coastal Gujarat have witnessed heavy rains and high-speed winds since Wednesday.

On Thursday morning, strong winds and rough sea conditions were reported in Mandvi.

The Jakhau Port, usually bustling with activity, wore a deserted look because the entire village near the shoreline has been relocated.

Gujarat state officials said 67,000 people had been evacuated from coastal areas.

Indian people arriving at school converted into temporary shelter
Image caption,The cyclone is expected to make landfall on Thursday evening local time

Several train services have been suspended in Gujarat, while the ports of Kandla and Mundra – two of India’s largest – have stopped operations, authorities said.

Fishing has stopped along the Gujarat coast, while fishermen in Pakistan’s coastal region have also been warned to stay off the water.

Six national disaster relief teams have been deployed in key areas in the Kutch region of Gujarat for relief work. They will focus on ensuring that essential services remain unaffected or at least restored soon, depending on the cyclone’s intensity.

The India Meteorological Department expects Biparjoy to “fall in intensity” after crossing.

Cyclones, also known as hurricanes in the North Atlantic and typhoons in the Northwest Pacific, are a regular and deadly phenomenon in the Indian Ocean. Rising surface temperatures across the Arabian Sea in recent years due to climate change have made the surrounding regions even more vulnerable to devastating storms.

Cyclone Tauktae in May 2021 was the last severe cyclone that struck in the same region. It killed 174 people.

The evacuations for Biparjoy have brought back grim memories from 25 years ago when another cyclone hit the Gujarat coast, leaving a trail of death and destruction. Official figures put the death toll at around 4,000 but unofficially, locals say the number is much higher.

“We have seen cyclones in the past, but this time it looks very bad,” says 40-year old Abbas Yakub, a fisherman sheltering at a primary school in Mandvi. He is among 150 people at the temporary shelter.

“Our home is exactly at the coast, waves already touched our house yesterday morning. We don’t know what we will go back to,” he says.

  • Don’t vote for politicians who take their children abroad for school – Kennedy Agyapong says forgetting his children

Don’t vote for politicians who take their children abroad for school – Kennedy Agyapong says forgetting his children

Presidential hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has entreated electorates not to cast their ballots for politicians who send their wards abroad to study and pay huge sums of fees.

He made the statement while addressing party faithful during his tour of Keta Constituency in the Volta Region today, June 14, 2023.

According to Mr Agyapong, such politicians seek better lives for their wards while the child of the average Ghanaian suffers. Thus entreating Ghanaians not to leave the running of the country in the hands of such individuals.

“Let’s put everything aside and think of a man who cares for the country. A man who thinks about the future of the youth. A man who thinks about the development of the country and not those people you call for – they take the money outside the country, go and pay expensive school fees for their children whiles you suffer,” he said.

It is however important to note that the majority of Mr Agyapong’s children have had their education outside the country.

One of Mr Agyapong’s children, Kenneth Takyi Agyapong, lived in the United States of America where he completed United State University with a Doctorate degree.

His daughter, Yvonne, is said to have studied at Union Catholic High School, a private Catholic high school located in Scotch Plains, in Union County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey.

In a recent on Peace FM, Mr Agyapong noted that he is unhappy about the living conditions of Ghanaian graduates who are jobless when his children are faring much better after completing school in the US.

“The most important thing is how we will create jobs for the youth in this country because I feel guilty that my children in America finished school and are gainfully employed. But here, the youth finish university and have no jobs to do,” he said.

For some school of thought, politicians who opt to send their children abroad for education purpose do so as they do not trust the quality of education in the country.

Former Chelsea player, Hollins, passes away at the age of 76

John Hollins, a former Chelsea player and manager, has passed away at the age of 76. Hollins had a distinguished career, playing for Chelsea, QPR, and Arsenal.

He had two separate stints with Chelsea, from 1963 to 1975 and again in 1983-84.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, Hollins achieved significant success, winning the League Cup, FA Cup, and European Cup Winners’ Cup. He was also honored with Chelsea’s Player of the Year award on two occasions.

In a heartfelt tweet, his son Chris Hollins described him as his hero, best friend, and father, announcing the sad news of his passing.

“He was so modest but I will say it. He was a great player, brilliant team mate and one hell of a person.

“My mum, sister and all his grandchildren will miss him so much.”

Chelsea board member Lord Daniel Finkelstein added: “We were so sorry to hear of the death of John.

“He was a hero to the fans of this club and very much that to me. He was at the heart of one of Chelsea’s greatest teams and, as well as contributing to its trophy success, he expressed its spirit.

“He lifted up the team with his play and lit up the Bridge with his smile.

“He gave a life of service to this club as a player, manager and matchday ambassador. He was greatly loved and will be much missed.”

Wereko-Brobby wants govt to focus on local kingpins in galamsey fight

Ghanaian politician, Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby has emphasized the need for the government and its anti-galamsey forces to prioritize honesty in their fight against illegal mining.

He urged the government to direct their efforts towards apprehending the key players involved in the illegal mining operations, rather than solely focusing on the small-scale participants.

As the former chief executive officer of the Volta River Authority, Dr. Wereko-Brobby attributed the persistence of illegal mining to political patronage.

In Dr Wereko-Brobby’s view, the “fight against galamsey must be fought in a very honest way”.

“For example, a few weeks ago, when Prof Frimpong-Boateng’s report became open and he had mentioned certain characters in that report, etc., one of my biggest disappointments was the fact that I heard one of the leading media stations in the fight against galamsey, spend a whole morning show trying to defend the actions of one of the people who had been fingered as being responsible for the damage to our lands”, he noted.

“So, the question I asked myself is: ‘What does the fight against galamsey mean when people’s interests are touched – whether it’s overtly or covertly?’”

“For me, holding the government to account to respect the laws of the country has to be paramount”, Dr Wereko-Brobby noted, adding: “So, we should, as a country, not be focused on arresting the young men who are down doing the illegal mining”.

Instead, he said, the attention should be on the big sponsors of the canker.

“But I’ve never actually heard the fight of galamsey looking for or pushing for or taking any action against the kingpins who finance galamsey”, he said.

Aisha Huang; we made a lot of noise, what’s happened to Aisha Huang?” he asked.

He said the laws of Ghana are clear-cut that small-scale mining is reserved for Ghanaians, “so who are the Ghanaians who get the licences and invite the Chinese to front for them?”

“Who are the Ghanaians who can afford USD50,000 excavators to support the operations of these people in the pit?” he asked.

“If we are really serious about fighting galamsey, we really ought to go hard against the local kingpins who are fronting and finance the effort”, he said.

Bawumia to submit NPP presidential nomination forms on Friday

Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, a hopeful candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming presidential elections, is set to submit his nomination forms on Friday, June 16, 2023.

He expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming contest and emphasized his dedication to the success of the NPP. Dr. Bawumia called upon party members to rally behind his candidacy and collaborate to secure victory in the 2024 presidential elections.

Having played a significant role in the NPP’s victories in the 2016 and 2020 elections, the Vice President is widely regarded as a frontrunner in the NPP Presidential race. His nomination will set the stage for a highly anticipated competition among potential candidates within the party.

Consider Bawumia-Alan Cash alliance for 2024 elections – Majority leader to NPP

Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has proposed a potential alliance between Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia and former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten for the upcoming 2024 general elections within the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, both the Vice President and the former Trade and Industry Minister are strong contenders within the NPP, and therefore, it would be beneficial to reach a consensus ahead of the party’s 2023 presidential primary.

The Majority Leader emphasized the importance of establishing a consensus for either the Vice President to become the party’s flagbearer with Mr Kyerematen as his running mate, or vice versa.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu revealed that he has taken this suggestion further by engaging in discussions with former Chief of Staff Kwadwo Mpiani for further deliberation.

Speaking in an interview on PM Express on Joy News Channel on June 13, 2024, the Suame Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) in the Ashanti Region highlighted the need for research to support the claims of a potential alliance between the two candidates, which he called for during the meeting at the former Chief of Staff’s residence.

“I further took the matter to former President John Agyekum Kufuor for discussion and he said the party must be allowed to follow the trend of electing flagbearers”.

“I still believe this must be considered in the party’s interest,” the Suame MP concluded.

Meanwhile, some 11 aspirants have picked forms to contest the primary slated for November 2023.

They are former Minister of Energy Boakye Agyarko; the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, and a former Presidential Spokesperson and General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyepong.

The others are Dr Afrieyie Akoto, former Minister of Food and Agriculture; Kwadwo Nsafoah Opoku, an energy expert, former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Joe Ghartey, who is also the MP for Essikado-Ketan; former MP for Mampong, Francis Addai-Nimoh, former Minister of State Kofi Konadu Apraku, who is also a former MP for Offinso North and Odeneho Nana Oppong, a former Director of Logistics at the office of President.

  • Italy mourns former Prime Minister Berlusconi

Italy mourns former Prime Minister Berlusconi

Italy is immersed in a day of national mourning as the nation bids farewell to its former Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi.

The flamboyant figure, known for his tumultuous personal life and media empire, is being honored with a ceremony that matches the grandeur and drama of his own life’s soap opera.

Leading the state funeral at Milan’s magnificent cathedral is the Archbishop of Milan, symbolizing the significant role Berlusconi played in Italian politics and society. The solemn event serves as a moment of reflection and remembrance for the man who, despite lacking prior political experience, rose to power and left an indelible mark on the nation.

As a gesture of respect, both Italian and European flags on public buildings throughout the country have been lowered to half-mast, a poignant symbol of mourning and tribute to the charismatic leader.

The square outside the cathedral filled up with thousands of people waving Forza Italian flags and AC Milan flags, clapping and chanting: “Silvio will always be our president.”

This kind of tribute is unprecedented for a former prime minister. A state funeral is a privilege usually reserved for popes, war heroes and serving ministers.

Milan is a city deeply associated with Silvio Berlusconi – this is where he was born and where he started his career, selling vacuum cleaners.

Maxi-screens have been set up in the main square, which filled during the morning with people coming to say a final farewell.

Behind the scenes, a true succession story is also playing out.

During his lifetime, Berlusconi amassed a vast empire that spanned media, real estate, finance, cinema and sport – as well as a powerful political party that is part of Italy’s current government.

He was one of Italy’s richest men. According to Forbes, his business assets are worth about €6bn (£5.15bn).

But he never publicly indicated who should lead his business empire after his death and there are also big questions over the future of the Forza Italia party he created.

    Marina Berlusconi
Image caption,Marina Berlusconi already chairs Fininvest and is most likely to take over the family’s holding company

Berlusconi has two children from his first marriage and three from his second. All of them have stakes in Fininvest, his holding company.

The future of his business interests will likely depend on how he has chosen to distribute the 61% stake he had in Fininvest.

Will there be equal shares for all, or more for the two eldest children, Marina and Pier Silvio, who have held management roles in the empire since the early 1990s?

Silvio Berlusconi with his wife Veronica and their 3 children, Figli Luigi (5 years old), Eleonora (7 years old) and Barbara (9 years old).
Image caption,This 1993 picture shows Silvio Berlusconi with his wife Veronica and their 3 children, Luigi, Eleonora and Barbara

Other valuable assets are undoubtedly Berlusconi’s numerous luxurious villas. They could be tricky to pass on to his offspring in an equal way.

His Villa San Martino in Arcore, north-east of Milan, covers 3,500 sq m and dates back to the 18th Century. He also has homes at Lake Maggiore, in Rome, Cannes, the Caribbean and elsewhere.

The jewel in Berlusconi’s crown of properties is Villa Certosa, a mansion in Sardinia that he bought in the 1970s.

He hosted world leaders there, from Vladimir Putin to George W. Bush. It has 126 rooms and looks like a theme park – including a fake volcano that erupts lava. Its value is estimated at €259m.

People close to the family have described Berlusconi as “the glue” who kept his children united.

There has been no dispute so far over who takes over the empire – that is expected to fall to his oldest child Marina, 56, considered closest of the five to her father.

The big question is whether that family unity can be maintained now that Berlusconi has gone, and what impact that might have on the future of his business empire.

His death could prove disastrous for the future of his political party. Can Forza Italia survive without its charismatic creator – or could it fall apart in a matter of months?

He was the ultimate populist leader, and unsurprisingly, the party he created was entirely shaped around his persona.

His right-hand man, foreign minister Antonio Tajani, has categorically denied its future is at risk: “It’s unthinkable that the party would disappear.”

But Forza Italia’s share of the vote had already slipped to 8% in last September’s general election.

Many Italians who backed the party did so because they were Berlusconi loyalists and it will be tricky to appoint a successor they will warm to.

In reality, party members will probably look to the Berlusconi family to make a decision.

Will the two eldest, Marina and Pier Silvio, want to keep investing in their father’s political creation, or will they turn off the financial tap and cut their losses?

    Pier Silvio Berlusconi
Image caption,Pier Silvio Berlusconi runs the commercial TV side of the family’s Fininvest holding

Without their financial support, Forza Italia has no chance of surviving. Berlusconi heavily funded his party – reportedly injecting it with nearly €100m.

There is some speculation that Marina could succeed him as leader, but for now this remains a rumour. She is seen as more of a behind-the-scenes operator.

Another unknown is Berlusconi’s partner Marta Fascina, who is 53 years his junior. She’s an MP in his party and has said several times that “her passion is politics and she grew up with the myth of Silvio Berlusconi”.

Berlusconi’s eldest daughter reportedly blocked his plan to marry her last year. So there is a cloud over Ms Fascina’s future role in her late partner’s party.

Marta Fascina (L) is an MP in Berlusconi's party, which plays an important role in the coalition of Giorgia Meloni (R)
Image caption,Marta Fascina (left) is an MP in Berlusconi’s party, which plays an important role in the coalition of Giorgia Meloni (right)

One thing is certain: if Forza Italia does fracture, it would be a big problem for the other members of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s coalition government.

Political instability looms after Wednesday’s day of national mourning.

In a country so well-known for regular political crises, a government collapse triggered by the disintegration of one of the coalition partners does not seem such an unlikely scenario.

Until now, Berlusconi’s children have avoided the limelight. But his death might force them to emerge from the shadows to take the reins of his empire.

Berlusconi had health problem for years so it is likely he and his children had thought all of this through.

They might opt for an easy transition heralded by their eldest sister Marina, rather than get into a succession battle which could go wrong.

  • New study shows persons interested in news have drastically reduced

New study shows persons interested in news have drastically reduced

A comprehensive report from Oxford University’s Reuters Institute, the number of individuals displaying a significant interest in the news has experienced a notable decline over the past six years.

The study reveals that 48% of people worldwide are currently categorized as very or extremely interested in the news, representing a decline from the 63% recorded in 2017.

A concerning trend identified in the report is that more than a third of individuals globally, approximately 36%, admit to actively avoiding the news on occasion or even frequently.

This avoidance behavior highlights a growing disengagement from news consumption among a significant portion of the population.

The authors of the institute’s report said there was evidence that audiences “continue to selectively avoid important stories such as the war in Ukraine and the cost-of-living crisis as they cut back on depressing news and look to protect their mental health”.

The Digital News Report 2023 also concluded that traditional TV and print news media are continuing to decline, while “online consumers are accessing news less frequently than in the past and are also becoming less interested”.

Four in 10 people (40%) say they trust most news most of the time, down two percentage points compared with last year.

The research also reported that more than half (56%) of those surveyed worry about identifying what news is real and fake online – up two percentage points.

    Rise of TikTok

The most important social media platform for news is still Facebook, although it is in long-term decline, with the number accessing it each week for news dropping from 42% to 28% over the past seven years.

Facebook has also downgraded news. It says less than 3% of its news feed these days is traditional news stories. The tweaking of the algorithm over recent years has been catastrophic for some organisations that relied on its traffic.

TikTok and Instagram have both seen increases in use. Instagram is now a source of news for 14% of people, with TikTok on 6%.

But the figures are much higher for young users. One in five (20%) 18 to 24-year-olds get news from TikTok, up from 15% last year. The report says the platform “is the fastest growing social network in our survey”.

However, it is not necessarily news from traditional news providers. TikTok users are more likely to get news on the platform from celebrities, influencers or ordinary creators than mainstream news outlets or journalists.

Reuters Institute director Rasmus Neilsen said: “Younger generations increasingly eschew direct discovery for all but the most appealing brands.

“They have little interest in many conventional news offers oriented towards older generations’ habits, interests, and values, and instead embrace the more personality-based, participatory, and personalised options offered by social media, often looking beyond legacy platforms to new entrants.”

Liking, sharing and commenting about news on open social media platforms is also in decline.

However, while the sharing of articles and engagement time may have dropped, it doesn’t mean such sites are being deserted.

Twitter made headlines after it was bought by Elon Musk, but the number of people using the site each week appears to have has barely changed. There is, Reuters said, no evidence of a mass movement to rivals such as Mastodon.

Over 59 killed as migrant boat capsizes off Greece

A tragic incident occurred off the southern coast of Greece, where a fishing vessel carrying migrants capsized, resulting in the loss of at least 59 lives.

Over 100 individuals were fortunate to be rescued in the aftermath, making it the deadliest shipwreck in Greece this year.

The exact number of people aboard the boat remains uncertain, with Greek authorities and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) suggesting that there could have been hundreds on board. The boat was located in international waters by a Frontex aircraft, the EU border agency, late on Tuesday, according to Greece’s coastguard.

Unfortunately, despite the rescue operation’s initiation, the passengers reportedly declined assistance and were not wearing life jackets.

Tragically, a few hours later, the boat capsized and sank, further complicating the search and rescue efforts due to adverse weather conditions, including strong winds.

The vessel was reportedly heading from Libya to Italy, and the majority of those on board were said to be men in their twenties.

A migration ministry source told the AFP news agency that “hundreds” of people were on board. “We fear there will be a very large number of missing persons,” the official said.

The IOM tweeted: “We fear more lives were lost. Initial reports suggest up to 400 people were on board.”

The nationalities of the victims have not yet been announced. Survivors have been taken to the town of Kalamata for treatment.

Greece is one of the main routes into the European Union for refugees and migrants from the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

Last month the Greek government came under international criticism over video footage reportedly showing the forceful expulsion of migrants who were set adrift at sea.

More than 70,000 refugees and migrants have arrived in Europe’s frontline countries this year, with the majority landing in Italy, according to UN data.

Respect the national anthem and pledge – NCCE to Ghanaians

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has raised alarm about the growing lack of respect for patriotic values among Ghanaian citizens.

In a press release issued on June 12, 2023, the NCCE expressed its concern that this trend is gradually eroding the country’s national identity.

“As citizens with deeply held religious values, we must not just say the words but sing and recite them with great commitment,” the statement said.

The NCCE’s statement comes after a viral video from the 2023 edition of the Green Ghana Day Celebration, which was organized at the University of Ghana, in which President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is seen angrily directing the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, to tell the Mempeasem Chief and his elders to stand up and observe the national anthem.

The matter got social media buzzing and this prompted the Chief of Mempeasem, Nii Torgbor Obodai Ampaw, to clarify the issue and render and apology.

According to the Chief, he was not in the best shape hence had to sit to conserve his energy to protect his health.

Following this, the NCCE has emphasized that it is the civic duty of every Ghanaian to stand in reverence when the National Anthem is played and when reciting the National Pledge, as a gesture of respect towards the nation and its cherished symbols.

“No one is born a good citizen and that is why the NCCE believes that we must be deliberate about nurturing good citizens with patriotic values,” the statement said.

  • Inflation in May rises to 42.2% – GSS

The year-on-year inflation rate for May 2023 has increased to 42.2%, up from the 41.2% recorded in April 2023.

According to the Ghana Statistical Service, food Inflation experienced a significant jump from 48.7% in April 2023 to 51.8% in May 2023.

On the other hand, non-food inflation decreased to 34.6% in May 2023, compared to the 35.4% recorded in April 2023.

The Government Statistician, Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim, made this announcement in Kumasi, located in the Ashanti Region.

Prof. Annim explained that the contribution of food inflation to the overall national inflation rate was the highest it had been in 17 months.

Headline inflation declined significantly by more than 12.0 percent in the first four months of the year, illustrating the easing of inflationary pressures, according to the Bank of Ghana.

The consecutive increases in the policy rate, supported by additional liquidity management operations to address excess liquidity conditions in the market, relative stability in the local currency, and stable ex-pump petroleum prices have supported the disinflation process.

Given these considerations, the MPC maintained the policy rate at 29.5 percent.

Officials have reported that two Japanese soldiers were killed and another injured when an 18-year-old trainee opened fire at a military training range in central Japan.

The incident occurred during a shooting drill in Gifu on Wednesday, with the trainee allegedly firing eight shots at instructors.

One of the victims was a 25-year-old man, while details about the other victims, who were instructors at the facility, are not yet known.

The suspect was immediately detained and arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force stated that no civilians were involved, and live-fire and explosive training drills were suspended nationwide following the attack.

Gun violence remains rare in Japan, but a few notable incidents have occurred in recent years.

Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was gunned down at a political rally by a protester last July. Abe was Japan’s longest-serving prime minister and his death profoundly shocked the country.

Japan was again rattled in April when Prime Minister Fumio Kishida escaped unharmed after having a smoke bomb thrown at his campaign event.

And in May, a Japanese man killed four people, including two police officers, in an hours-long knife and shooting rampage in the Nagano region.

On Wednesday, pictures on Japanese media showed police and emergency vehicles blocking off roads around the training facility in Gifu city.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu said he was aware of the shooting, and said the incident was still under investigation.

Japan has strict gun ownership rules, and only allows civilians to own hunting rifles and airguns. People have to undergo a strict exam and mental health tests in order to buy a gun in Japan.

  • How prices of cocoa, crude oil and gold fared in first four months of 2023

How prices of cocoa, crude oil and gold fared in first four months of 2023

The Bank of Ghana has provided an update on the current status of three key commodities that Ghana trades in, namely cocoa, crude oil, and gold.

In its May 2023 Monetary Sector Report, the Central Bank noted that in the first four months of 2023, cocoa prices were generally positive.

This was driven by lower production volumes, higher grinding in top-grower Ivory Coast and increased global demand.

Per the report, prices began the year at US$2,539.86 per tonne in December 2022, and rose to US$2,924.37 per tonne in April this year. This represents 15.2 percent year-to-date increase and 13.0 percent on year-on-year terms.

With regard to crude oil, prices have broadly trended downwards since June 2022.

Meanwhile, the BoG says gold has remained strong so far this year.

Spot gold started the year at US$1,796.2 per fine ounce and surged to an all-time high US$2,000.7 per fine ounce in April 2023, representing a 3.4 percent year-on-year
    growth.

This was prompted by economic uncertainty amid fears of recession, expectation of lower rate hikes as inflation eases, and the banking crisis in the U.S. and Europe.

“The weighted average price of the three major commodities exported by Ghana (cocoa, gold and crude oil) increased by 3.9 percent in April 2023.

The increase in the overall index was on the back of increases in all the three commodities, with the cocoa sub-index increasing by 4.9 percent, the crude oil sub-index by 3.9 percent, and the gold sub-index by 3.7 percent,” the report added.

  • Bellingham joins Real Madrid

Real Madrid has secured the signing of Jude Bellingham, born on June 29, 2003, in Stourbridge, as their newest player.

Widely regarded as one of the most promising talents in global football, the midfielder joins Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund.

Bellingham arrives in Madrid following a remarkable season in which he was voted the best player in the Bundesliga for 2022/23. At just 19 years old, he has already established himself as a regular starter for the England national team.

Having spent three seasons in Germany, Bellingham now becomes a member of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.

His most recent campaign with Borussia Dortmund was particularly impressive, as he achieved his highest goal-scoring tally, netting 14 goals across all competitions.

Notably, he made an immediate impact on his debut for Borussia Dortmund in September 2020, becoming the youngest player in the club’s history to score at the age of 17 years and 77 days. He also featured in the German Cup final, helping his team secure victory.

Bellingham’s talents have also been recognized on the international stage. After making his senior debut for England in November 2020, he was selected to represent his country in the Euro 2020 tournament, where England finished as runners-up. He further showcased his skills in the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar and even found the back of the net.

Prior to his move to Germany, Bellingham honed his skills in the youth system of Birmingham City. He made history at the club by becoming their youngest-ever debutant at the age of 16 years and 38 days, as well as their youngest-ever goal-scorer at 16 years and 63 days in August 2019.

Birmingham City announced that they would retire the number 22 shirt in his honor upon his departure from the club in July 2020.

In response, Uche, representing the petitioners, informed the court that the objections raised by INEC had been argued, and the ruling on them was reserved by the court.

‘I hadn’t had a chance to go through all the boxes’ – Trump tells court hearing classified documents case

Former US president, Donald Trump, has entered a plea of not guilty to longstanding accusations of mishandling sensitive files during a hearing at a federal court in Miami, Florida.

This marks the first time a federal criminal indictment has been filed against a sitting or former US president.

During the court proceedings, Trump maintained a stern and composed demeanor, crossing his arms while dressed in a dark suit and red tie. This court appearance is his second this year.

Following the hearing, the Republican politician made his way to his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he addressed his supporters.

Against a backdrop of American flags, Mr Trump, who is the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, struck a defiant tone and told the assembled crowd he had “every right” to hold the classified documents, but “hadn’t had a chance to go through all the boxes”.

He said he followed the law and went on to list series of unsubstantiated claims as well as grievances against President Joe Biden and his former rival Hillary Clinton.

Earlier in the day before leaving Miami, Mr Trump, on his social media platform Truth Social, thanked the city for “such a warm welcome on such a sad day for our country”.

Just hours before, in a 13th-floor room of a federal courthouse in downtown Miami, a sombre, subdued Mr Trump looked on while his lawyer entered a plea of not guilty on 37 counts of illegally retaining classified documents and obstructing the government’s efforts to get them back.

“We most certainly enter a plea of not guilty,” the attorney, Todd Blanche, told the judge.

Accompanying the former president, Mr. Walt Nauta, a close aide charged with six criminal counts, sat at the same table during the court proceedings.

On the other side of the courtroom, the entire prosecution team, including special counsel Jack Smith, who announced the indictment last week, were present.

Despite turning 77 on Wednesday, Mr. Trump was granted unrestricted domestic and international travel privileges by Magistrate Judge Jonathan Goodman, as prosecutors did not consider him a flight risk.

However, the former president is prohibited from discussing the case with Mr. Nauta.

After the hearing, Mr. Trump expressed a thumbs-up gesture to his supporters as his motorcade departed from the courthouse. In one mildly chaotic moment of an otherwise peaceful day, a protester dressed in a prison jumpsuit briefly interrupted the motorcade’s path before being swiftly moved away by security personnel.

Mr. Trump and his security detail subsequently headed to Versailles, a popular Cuban restaurant located in Miami’s Little Havana, where a crowd of supporters awaited him. Many lined up to take photos with the former president, and he appeared to participate in a prayer with some patrons. The visit coincided with a rendition of “Happy Birthday to You” sung in his honor.

Before the hearing, court officials said Mr Trump would not have a mugshot taken but would be digitally fingerprinted and asked to submit a DNA sample by swab.

A trial date has not yet been set, though the case is still earmarked for Aileen Cannon, a federal district judge in South Florida who was appointed by Mr Trump.

  • NANS urges Tinubu to remove NBA, ASUU from Board of Education Loan Fund

NANS urges Tinubu to remove NBA, ASUU from Board of Education Loan Fund

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to remove the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) from the board of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund.

This request comes in response to the recently signed students’ loan bill, which includes provisions for the composition of the board.

During a visit to the State House on Tuesday, the NANS delegation, led by the body’s National President, Umar Barambu, revealed that they urged him to review the constitution of the special committee that will oversee the new Nigerian Education Loan Fund to include student representatives.

The NANS President said, “We thank the President for the Students Loan Bill. We have outlined the clauses that we are not too comfortable with.

“And part of them is the issue of that board that we mentioned to the President, which we said at least students’ representatives should be captured and there are some organisations that they put there, which to us, they don’t need to be there.

“We gave him an example, most especially the Nigerian Bar Association, ASUU. ASUU has its own microfinance bank running its own affairs without students on its board. So, I don’t think it’s wise for us to allow them to be inside our own board because it is purely students.

“We are the major stakeholders of that bank. So I don’t think allowing them to be there is good. Not only them, but we also mentioned a lot of people that they should remove and put more of student-oriented organisation.”

In response, President Tinubu assured the NANS leaders that he would carefully consider their requests. However, he also emphasized the importance of unity among the student body nationwide, highlighting that greater achievements could be attained through collective efforts.

“You have to promote unity and stability among each other. You have to employ democratic means in your programmes and elections. I have to say, anyone who is unable to accept and celebrate a free and fair election, does not deserve the joy of victory,” Tinubu said.

The President stressed that poverty should not prevent any Nigerian from obtaining quality education at the highest levels.

He promised that his administration would commit more resources to the education sector to ensure that every Nigerian child, regardless of their background, has access to quality education.

“Poverty should not prevent anybody, any child, including the daughter or son of a wood seller, ‘boli’ (plantain) seller or yam seller from attaining their highest standard of education, to eliminate poverty.

“If we all believe that education is the greatest weapon against poverty, then we have to invest in it. If you eliminate poverty from one family, you can carry the rest of the weight,” the President said.

He thanked the students for supporting the removal of subsidy on petrol, explaining the reasons behind the decision and the need to curb smuggling.

“I’m glad you understand the reason for the subsidy removal. We were at a point where Nigeria tried to draw water from a dry well and that is no longer acceptable we equally must not continue to service the smugglers because they used to take our tankers and Premium Motor Spirit across the borders.  We will put our money where our mouth is,” he said.

At least 3 killed in attack on key Ukrainian port of Odesa

The Black Sea port of Odesa experienced a rare attack, resulting in the death of at least three individuals and injuring 13 others.

Simultaneously, in the eastern Donetsk region, three civilians were also killed in overnight incidents. Moscow has yet to provide an official response regarding the alleged strikes.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently declared that Ukraine’s counter-offensive was unsuccessful, causing significant losses for their army.

These statements coincided with Kyiv’s efforts to push back against Russian forces, leading to the recapture of seven settlements according to Ukrainian sources.

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine emphasized progress and advancements in several areas during the counter-offensive, highlighting a positive movement forward.

The Ukrainians say they’ve liberated just over 3 sq km (one square mile) of territory over the last three days.

Spokesman for the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Andriy Kovalyov, told the United News TV marathon that troops had advanced by distances ranging from 200m to 1.4km (0.9 miles).

Alluding to the situation in the south, Kovalyov added: “In the Berdyansk direction, hostilities continue in the vicinity of the village of Makarivka. Fighting is also under way in the vicinity of Novodanylivka and Novopokrovka.”

  • Adwoa Safo flew outside Ghana to deliver but lost her baby – Lawyer for Dome-Kwabenya MP

Seth Osei Kissi, the Chief of Staff for Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament and lawyer Sarah Adwoa Safo, has disclosed that the lawmaker was absent from work for an extended period due to circumstances beyond her control.

In an interview with Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Kissi explained that the MP had traveled because she was expecting a child, but unfortunately, she experienced a miscarriage.

Adding to her distress, the MP received news that her first son had fallen ill and was at risk of losing his ability to walk.

These unfortunate incidents greatly traumatized the MP, necessitating her longer absence from work to address these personal challenges.

“The MP’s absence was not intentional,” he said. “She was pregnant and due to give birth, so she travelled to give birth, but she, unfortunately, lost the child during childbirth. During the same period, the first son became ill and nearly lost his ability to walk. The two stories were devastating, but she remained steadfast and strong throughout. These were the reasons she was gone for so long. She had no plans to leave the district or her job for that long. Her absence was due to the circumstances of the time.”

Kissi further shared that the viral video of the MP singing occurred after the doctor attending to her son informed her that his surgery had been successful and that he would regain the ability to walk.

The disclosure of these details was prompted by constituents persistently seeking answers regarding her prolonged absence. Additionally, Kissi confirmed that the MP will seek re-election in the NPP’s parliamentary primaries.

Meanwhile, he has revealed that the MP has met with the youth and women organisers in the constituencies and that she will soon meet with the organisers, secretaries, and leaders in the constituency to inform them that she will run again.

He claimed that her meetings so far have been positive and that the delegates have declared a ‘No Adwoa Safo, No Vote’ campaign.

  • Prove yourself in EFL to earn Wales call, Paul Mullin told

Prove yourself in EFL to earn Wales call, Paul Mullin told

Wales manager Rob Page has indicated that Wrexham striker Paul Mullin could be considered for national team selection if he maintains a consistent scoring record in League Two.

Despite being born in Liverpool, Mullin is eligible to play for Wales through his Welsh-born grandmother and has expressed his desire to represent the country at the international level.

During his two seasons at Wrexham, the 28-year-old has impressively netted 78 goals, playing a significant role in the club’s promotion to the English Football League. Additionally, Mullin clinched the 2022-23 FA Cup Golden Ball as the tournament’s top scorer.

Mullin’s eligibility has sparked discussions among Wales supporters, with many eager to see him receive a senior call-up. However, manager Rob Page has shown some hesitation due to Mullin’s current involvement in the fifth tier of English football.

“Forget what he’s done up until now,” Page said ahead of Friday’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Armenia in Cardiff.

“If he is playing in League Two and he’s scoring goals, then we will look at him and consider him. But there is a massive gap from where he’s been up to League Two.

“We will keep monitoring him and if he keeps scoring goals as he goes up the levels he’ll prove himself.”

Mullin has already shone in League Two and won the division’s Golden Boot with a 32-goal season in Cambridge’s 2020–21 promotion campaign.

He enhanced his reputation further in the FA Cup this term with nine goals, three of which came against Championship pair Coventry and Sheffield United.

Page said: “I watched him against Sheffield United and I was very impressed by him, just from a work rate point of view.

“I wouldn’t want to play against him, he’s a pain in the backside.

“Forget his goalscoring and his eye for goal, I like him because he’s a pain to play against. He’s like a rat, and I want that.”

Page admits Wales need to sharpen their attacking play for games against Armenia and Turkey after collecting four points from their opening two Euro 2024 qualifiers in March.

Brennan Johnson and David Brooks have returned to the squad after missing the 1-1 draw in Croatia and the 1-0 home win over Latvia.

“While I was happy with the Latvia performance and how we controlled the game, that final detail at the top of the pitch is where we need to improve,” Page said.

“Having Brennan back fit, and Daniel James, Harry Wilson and David available is only going to help us achieve that.

“With the personnel we’ve got we can have two or three different formations without any problem.

“The game plan might change within a game, but having players like Brennan will give us the opportunity to get higher up the pitch and score more goals.

“We’ve got some good players and the problem now is finding out how to get them all into the same team.”

Man reportedly butchers wife, evades community arrest

A manhunt is underway for 38-year-old Atta, who is accused of brutally murdering his wife in Wassa Wiredukrom.

According to reports, Atta and his now-deceased wife, Ama Gifty, resided in Wassa Wiredukrom with their two children in the Western Region’s Wassa Mporho District.

On Sunday, June 11, 2023, the couple had an argument, which resulted in Gifty leaving the house and spending the night at a friend’s place.

The following morning, Monday, June 13, 2023, Gifty is said to have returned home from her friend’s residence to prepare for a trip to the market in Wassa Wuredokrom to sell her goods. Upon her arrival, she found that the children had already left for school.
