Invest more in our research development to grow agric industry – Minister to donor partners

Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, Yaw Frimpong Addo, has called on African governments to prioritize investments in biotechnology as a means to enhance agriculture across the continent.

He emphasizes the need for African nations to foster greater collaboration in implementing agricultural biotechnology tools in order to address the pressing issue of undernourishment, which affects approximately 278 million people in Africa—equivalent to one-fifth of the population.

“We need to invest more in research development. We need to collaborate more across the continent so we can share expertise and personnel,” he said.

The Deputy Minister also emphasised the need for donor partners “to support such research efforts even more since we cannot do it all by ourselves.”

The Deputy Minister who is also the Manso Adubia MP made the call in a speech at the maiden edition of the International Symposium on Agricultural Transformation and Biotech Crops in Africa which was held at the University of Ghana.

The symposium deliberated on what agricultural sector stakeholders need to do differently to ensure expanded farmer access to crops produced using New Breeding Techniques (NBTs).

Participants deliberated on how genetically modified organism (GMO) technology has been deployed on the African continent for the benefit of farmers, its impact so far, and its prospects.

Also, participants deliberated on the yet-to-be-realized potential that genome editing holds for the ongoing efforts to ensure Africa feeds itself.

Scientists shed light on the latest promising new breeding techniques and other scientific innovations in crop improvement.

The symposium was organised by Alliance for Science Ghana and the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) at the University of Ghana.

Twenty-five speakers from about 20 different countries spoke at the conference including Prof. Eric Danquah who is the founding director of WACCI; Dr. Sheila Ochugboju, Executive Director of Alliance for Science; Dr. Leena Tripathi, Eastern Africa Director of International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Kenya.

The others are Prof. Giles Oldroyd, Director of Cambridge Crop Science Centre, University of Cambridge, UK; Dr Michael Osae, Director, Biotechnology & Nuclear Agriculture Research Institute, Ghana; among others.

Beyond the African continent, there were guest speakers from Latin America, the USA, the UK, and the Philippines.

Hundreds of other scientists participated in person including Prof. Ronnie Coffman of Cornell University and Prof. Rita Mumm of the University of Illinois.

Conference organisers said a communique on ‘Pathways To Making Africa Food Sufficient’ will be issued after the symposium, detailing the recommendations on the changes that African governments, state agencies, donor partners, universities, research institutions, industry, farmers, consumers, and other agricultural sector stakeholders, should institute to help enhance access to ‘made in Africa biotech crops.’

Mr Frimpong Addo said Ghana is leading the way when it comes to the introduction of scientific innovations in agricultural production and urged the rest of Africa to follow suit.

He said the National Biosafety Authority (NBA) in June last year approved Ghana’s first genetically modified crop, the Pod borer Resistant Cowpea or Bt cowpea, for environmental release.

“Currently, multilocational trials are ongoing for the genetically modified cowpea varieties before they will be brought to the Varietal Release Committee at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture for varietal release approval.

“We are waiting for it eagerly so that all the necessary regulatory hurdles can be crossed for this variety to get into the hands of farmers,” he said.

“With this variety, farmers can spray their cowpea fields with chemicals only two times in the three-month life cycle of the plant instead of the current situation where they sprayed eight to 10 times.

“This is obviously a good thing. It protects the environment from the damaging effects of climate change. It also helps avoid the tedious work women and men would have to do on the field fetching water to mix chemicals.

“Also, it helps avoid pesticide poisoning of our farmers. This has been possible through the power of biotechnology,” he explained to the audience.

The deputy minister said his ministry looks forward to the communique from the symposium “for ideas on what we can also do differently to help transform Africa’s agriculture.”

Prof. Eric Danquah in his opening remarks told the audience; “Biotechnology can help advance the frontiers of science. We can explore new horizons and push the boundaries of knowledge to unlock the potential of plant biotechnology and genome editing.”

“Let us embrace this journey of discovery and collaboration for groundbreaking advancements that can help shape the future of agriculture and secure a sustainable future for generations yet to come,” he said.

The country lead of Alliance for Science Ghana Joseph Opoku Gakpo said Africa needs all ‘hands on deck’ to deal with the hunger and food insecurity challenge.

“Africa’s hunger burden is twice that of Asia, two and half times that of Latin America and the Caribbean, four times that of the Oceania region, and about eight times that of Northern America/Europe.

“The hunger burden in Africa is higher than in any other continent in the world and the African situation deserves urgent and special attention. So, we need all the solutions we can lay hands on,” he said.

  • Bawumia does not owe allegiance to Britain – Gideon Boako shoots down claims

Bawumia does not owe allegiance to Britain – Gideon Boako shoots down claims

Spokesperson for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Gideon Boako, has strongly denied the allegations circulating on social media that the Vice President possesses British citizenship while serving as Vice President of Ghana.

In a Facebook post on Friday evening, Dr. Gideon Boako categorically stated that Dr. Bawumia has never held British citizenship or any other citizenship throughout his life.

These claims emerged after a screenshot supposedly displaying information about the Vice President on a purported UK website started circulating on social media.

The screenshot alleged that Dr. Bawumia holds British citizenship, which, if true, would contravene Ghanaian laws that prohibit individuals with dual citizenship from holding certain positions, including that of Vice President.

However, Dr. Bawumia’s spokesperson dismissed these claims on Facebook, urging people not to entertain or give any credence to such unfounded allegations.

Dr. Gideon Boako emphasized that the accusations should be disregarded and treated with contempt.

Dr Boako wrote: “The attention of the Office of the Vice President has been drawn to a malicious social media allegation that the Vice President holds a British citizenship while holding the office of Vice President,  contrary to the laws of Ghana.”

“We wish to state in clear terms that Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia does not hold British citizenship and has never held British or any other citizenship other than being a Ghanaian. The allegation should be treated with the contempt it deserves. Thank you.”

Article 8(2) of Ghana’s 1992 constitution states that “Without prejudice to Article 94(2)(a) of the Constitution, no citizen of Ghana shall qualify to be appointed as a holder of any office specified in this clause if he holds the citizenship of any other country in addition to his citizenship of Ghana.”

Recently, the Supreme Court directed Parliament to expunge the name of Mr James Gyakye Quayson for its records as it upheld the Cape Coast High Court’s decision to nullify the 2020 Assin North Parliamentary election since it believed Mr Quayson owed allegiance to the Canadian government while contesting.

  • French Open: Novak Djokovic reaches another final

French Open: Novak Djokovic reaches another final

Carlos Alcaraz’s hopes of advancing in the French Open were dashed by cramp, allowing Novak Djokovic to secure a spot in his 34th grand slam final in rather anticlimactic fashion.

After winning an exhilarating second set to level the highly anticipated match, Alcaraz experienced a sudden cramp in his right leg following a forehand shot. Initially immobile, the 20-year-old eventually hobbled back to his seat and required treatment, resulting in the forfeiture of a service game.

The crowd expressed their displeasure through loud jeers upon realizing that Djokovic was awarded the game. However, that was the least of Alcaraz’s concerns. The Spanish player, previously captivating the audience with his remarkable movement and dynamism, was now reduced to mere walking.

Despite choosing not to retire, Alcaraz struggled to pose any significant challenge to Djokovic. He managed to win only one more game as the Serbian secured a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 victory, advancing to his seventh final on the clay courts of Paris.

Djokovic, who has not lost a grand slam match since the quarter-finals here last year, said: “First and foremost I have to say tough luck for Carlos. At this level, the last thing you want is cramps. I feel for him, I feel sorry and hope he can recover and come back very soon.

“I told him at the net, he knows how young he is. He’s going to win this tournament I’m sure many, many times. He’s an incredible player. It’s tough obviously for him to not know whether he should finish the match but congratulations to him for the fighting spirit.

“Towards the end of the second set I wasn’t feeling fresh at all. We went toe to toe and then this thing happened. I just tried to stay focused. I saw that he’s struggling but I didn’t want to think too much what’s going on on the other side of the net.

“I’m incredibly proud to reach another final.”

It was a huge disappointment because the contest had been living up to the massive hype, with the pair meeting for the first time in a grand slam and only the second occasion.

The 16-year age gap was the biggest in any Roland Garros semi-final in the open era and it seemed a pivotal match in the generational battle going on in men’s tennis as well as for Djokovic’s hopes of pulling away from his rivals at the top of the all-time lists.

Now he will be an overwhelming favourite to become the first man to win 23 grand slam singles titles in the final on Sunday, when he can also reclaim the number one ranking.

The 36-year-old had been tested on his way to the last four but he stepped up his level significantly in the first set, breaking Alcaraz in the fourth game and proving the steadier in tricky, breezy conditions.

The match really came alive in the third game of the second set when Alcaraz, whose ability to have fun at what should be stressful moments is a key part of his appeal, hit one of the most outrageous shots seen at a grand slam.

Having been dragged short and wide by a Djokovic drop shot, the Serbian appeared to have dinked a winner into the open court but Alcaraz had other ideas, not just getting to the ball on the slide but, while still travelling in the wrong direction, twisting and flicking a forehand inside the sideline.

Djokovic could do nothing but laugh and applaud while Alcaraz soaked up the adulation.

It was Djokovic who called the trainer after the seventh game for treatment to his right forearm and Alcaraz finally clinched his sixth break point to move 5-3 ahead.

The young Spaniard was forcing the pace and beginning to have significant success with his signature drop shot, but Djokovic is the toughest of grand slam beasts and back he came with a backhand winner drilled down the line.

Alcaraz forced three set points in the next game but Djokovic saved all of them, and he might have claimed the set had he taken a break point in the next game but uncharacteristically dumped a routine backhand wide.

Alcaraz held and then went up 0-40 again, this time drawing the error from Djokovic as he levelled the match.

At that stage it appeared the contest had a long distance still to run but a few minutes later it was effectively over.

Alcaraz hobbled his way through the remainder of the third set in what seemed like a futile bid to keep going and then took a long bathroom break, giving himself all the time he could to somehow recover.

He certainly moved better at the start of the fourth set but not nearly well enough and Djokovic ensured he did not find a way back into the match, not losing another game until he was 5-0 up.

Bus catches fire at Ngleshie Amanfro, injures 2

A commercial Yutong bus has been engulfed in flames and reduced to ashes on the Accra-Cape Coast road at Ngleshie Amanfro on Friday, June 9, 2023,

The bus was ferrying passengers from Tarkwa to Accra when the fire broke out.

According to a news report by UTV, passengers had alerted the driver on two occasions about a stench, but after inspecting the vehicle, the driver reassured them that everything was fine. Unfortunately, a few minutes after refueling the bus in Kasoa, it suddenly caught fire.

As flames emerged from the bus, personnel from the Ghana Police Service stationed at a checkpoint in Amanfro attempted to stop the vehicle. However, fearing arrest, the driver accelerated and continued driving.

Only after hearing cries from passengers and pedestrians did he stop, but by then, it was too late to save the bus from being completely consumed by the fire.

The report stated that two individuals sustained injuries during the incident. One passenger was severely injured after being trampled upon in the chaos as people hurriedly exited the bus in a desperate attempt to save their lives.

  • Tom Holland decides to take a year break from acting

Tom Holland decides to take a year break from acting

To prioritize his mental well-being, actor Tom Holland has announced his decision to take a one-year hiatus from acting.

The renowned English star, known for his portrayal of Spider-Man, revealed that he had faced significant challenges while working on his latest project, The Crowded Room, which left him feeling emotionally drained.

Holland, aged 27, not only stars in the Apple TV+ thriller series but also serves as a producer.

The show explores the story of a character inspired by Billy Milligan, who gained notoriety as “the campus rapist” and claimed to have 24 different personalities.

Milligan’s case was remarkable as he became the first person to be acquitted of his crimes by reason of insanity due to dissociative identity disorder.

Instead of serving time in prison, he spent a decade in psychiatric hospitals.

In an interview with Extra TV on Wednesday, Holland said the role found him “exploring certain emotions that I have definitely never experienced before”, while the off-camera responsibilities had added an “extra level of pressure”.

“I’m no stranger to hard work,” he said. “I’ve lived by the idea that hard work is good work. Then again, the show did break me.

“There did come a time where I needed a break and disappeared and went to Mexico for a week and had time on a beach and laid low.

“I’m now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult this show was. I am excited to see how it turns out. I feel like our hard work wasn’t in vain.”

“It was a tough time, for sure,” he added.

In a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly last month, the Bafta-winner revealed he’d had a “a bit of a meltdown” after being unable to switch the character off, and wanted to shake his head just to be rid of him.

“I was seeing myself in him, but in my personal life,” he said “I remember having a bit of a meltdown at home and thinking, like, ‘I’m going to shave my head. I need to shave my head because I need to get rid of this character.’

“And, obviously, we were mid-shooting, so I decided not to… It was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before.”

It’s not the first time the London-born actor has addressed such concerns. As last year, he announced he was stepping back from social media, saying he finds it can be “detrimental” to his mental health.

The year before said he was considering giving up acting, which he began aged 11, all together, in order to be able to “go and do other things”.

    Morata extends Atlético Madrid contract

Álvaro Morata has extended his contract with Atlético Madrid until June 2026.

According to International sports analyst, Fabrizio Romano, documents have already been checked as contract extension will be completed soon.

After completing a two-year loan spell at Juventus, the striker, originally from Madrid, made his return to Atletico last summer.

Despite not securing a regular starting position in the team, he has garnered praise at the Civitas Metropolitano for his exemplary work ethic and unwavering commitment.

Although often used as a substitute, he has made a significant impact, notably scoring two goals and providing an assist after coming off the bench against Sevilla.

In total, he has contributed 12 goals and 3 assists in 36 appearances, with 25 of those being starts.

  • Halaand is ‘a real predator in the box’, Puyol says

Halaand is ‘a real predator in the box’, Puyol says

Carlos Puyol, a former Barcelona defender who won the Champions League three times during his career, has showered praise on Erling Haaland ahead of the final on Saturday.

Puyol, 45, considers Haaland to be a once-in-a-generation talent.

As Haaland and his Manchester City teammates set their sights on a Treble by facing Inter Milan in Istanbul, Puyol’s admiration for the young striker is evident.

Speaking to Laureus Spirit of Sport, he said: “I think he’s a really complete player who will define an era.

“If had to play against him, and if I was 100%, I would have loved it.

“I enjoyed playing against the best. I’d analyse him very well to try and find areas where he’s less strong.

“He’s a real predator in the box. I love him, he’s so big, it’s really tough to mark him and you’d have to analyse it well and work as a team.

“In the air, you have to time it right, jump well. But he’s so powerful so tall. But we would give it a good go!”

Puyol also highlighted the supreme qualities of City boss Pep Guardiola.

Having both played with and under the Catalan tactician, he knows first-hand of Guardiola’s attention to detail.

Puyol explained: “For me, if not the best, he’s certainly among the top two or three coaches of all time.

“He transformed our football, starting with the goalkeeper.

“Then, having such an attacking side, you had to be very aware as a defender, he was always very hot on that.

“Many people really focus on how Pep’s teams play, but I think the difference really lies in how they defend, their reaction when they lose the ball. That’s what really stood out for me about Pep.

“We really had a fantastic defence. It was a complete, committed side. We all knew our roles very well, what we had to do, and we all worked together to achieve our goals.”

  • Ghana wins back largest gold producer spot from South Africa

Ghana wins back largest gold producer spot from South Africa

Ghana experienced a significant 32% surge in gold production last year, allowing it to reclaim its position as the largest gold producer in Africa from South Africa, the president of the mines chamber said on Friday, according to Reuters.

After experiencing a substantial decline in output, Ghana had relinquished the top spot to South Africa in 2021.

However, in 2022, gold production in Ghana rose to 3.7 million ounces, a notable increase from the previous year’s 2.8 million ounces. This growth can be attributed to advancements in both the large-scale and small-scale sectors of gold mining in the country.

“The large-scale gold sub-sector recorded its highest output in the country’s history in 2022,” Joshua Mortoti, the President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, told members at the annual general meeting.

He said a combination of output and the expansion of production at existing mines drove the large-scale sector’s contribution to national gold output up by 13% to 3.1 million ounces last year from 2.7 million ounces in 2021.

Mortoti said member companies of the mines chamber had sold over 77,620 ounces of gold under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, a scheme launched by the Bank of Ghana to boost reserves.

A 3.4% decline in South Africa’s mining production in the second quarter of 2022 was led by a decrease in gold and coal mining – gold production was down by 11.7% and coal by 5.7%, according to reports.

According to Statistics South Africa (StatsSA), the domestic mining production decreased by 8.4% year-on-year in July 2022.

StatsSA said that largest negative contributors were gold (a decline of 19.7%, contributing -3.1 percentage points); platinum group metals (-12.2%, contributing -2.8 percentage points); and iron ore (-20.4%, contributing -2.7 percentage points).

Blocked SIMs of subscribers without Ghana Card to be restored within two days – NCA

Deputy Director at the National Communications Authority (NCA), Kwame Gyan, has noted Ghanaians without Ghana Card whose SIMs have been blocked can have their cards activated within approximately 48 hours after reaching out to the authority.

Speaking on TV3‘s Midday Live on Friday, June 9, he is said to have noted that there are some cases where reactivating some SIM cards may take longer than two days or within a day.

This comes after Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, stated that Ghanaians who legitimately do not have the Ghana Card but have had their SIM cards deactivated to reach out to the National Communications Authority (NCA) for a resolution.

According to the Communication Minister, the affected users would have to provide evidence to that effect. She made the comments while updating Parliament on the SIM card registration exercise which has seen the deactivation of over 9 million SIM Cards on Thursday, June 8, 2023.

Providing further details, Mr Gyan noted that mobile network operators (MNOs) in some instances have provided WhatsApp numbers that customers can channel their complaints to.

The Deputy Director in charge of Consumer and Corporate Affairs said NCA’s offices across the country will also be open to receive such complaints.

He also noted that affected customers can send an email via complaints@nca.org.gh to his outfit for a resolution.

  • Australia still on top in World Test Championship final

Australia still on top in World Test Championship final

Australia maintained their commanding position on day three of the World Test Championship final against India, despite some missed catches and a few lapses in footwork.

The team’s performance at the Oval was not flawless, as they let three opportunities slip through their hands in the morning session.

Additionally, captain Pat Cummins had a wicket disallowed due to overstepping for the second time in the match.

However, these shortcomings did not affect their overall dominance in the game. Cameron Green redeemed himself for an earlier drop by making a remarkable catch at gully, contributing to India’s dismissal for 296.

David Warner fell cheaply as the Australians moved to 23 for one at tea in their second innings, leaving Rohit Sharma’s side 196 behind and facing a mountainous task.

Without a fine 89 from Ajinkya Rahane and a battling 51 from a battered and bruised Shardul Thakur, they would be even further adrift.

ustralia enjoyed a dream start when Scott Boland scattered Srikar Bharat’s stumps with the second ball of the day, leaving India 317 behind with just four wickets in hand.

Remarkably, and despite a relentless attacking effort from the Baggy Green bowlers, that was the only wicket to fall before lunch.

Boland came close to striking again in the opening over, snaring a thick edge from Thakur which soared high towards Usman Khawaja in the cordon. It was a tough chance and one that squirmed free from the fielder’s fingertips.

Thakur needed plenty of steel to stick around, requiring lengthy treatment after being hit three times by Cummins in a single over – wearing blows on the forearm, wrist and glove.

Having softened him up, the seamer should have got his rewards when Thakur sprayed a chance to gully but this time Green’s handiwork let him down.

With Thakur in a state of almost permanent danger, Rahane gave the vocal Indian crowd something to cheer when he hooked Cummins over fine-leg for six to bring up his half-century.

He passed 5,000 Test runs soon after, the 13th Indian to do so, but he also required a stroke of fortune to reach the break.

On 72 he aimed a flowing drive at Cummins, sending a head-high catch to first slip. Wicketkeeper Alex Carey appeared to offer a minor distraction to Warner, but he will still be kicking himself after seeing the ball pop out and land safe.

A handful of boundaries took the partnership into three figures as India began to have some fun, while Australia’s annoyance only increased when Cummins saw his lbw against Thakur overturned by the no-ball call. It was a case of history repeating for Cummins, who had also lost a wicket to over-stepping on day two when Rahane was on 17.

Australia needed a pick-me-up and Green provided it in style at the start of the afternoon session, showing razor sharp reactions and athleticism to take a jaw-dropping catch that ended Rahane’s stay on 89. Cummins was the beneficiary and he made sure to cash in when he cleaned up Umesh Yadav for five.

Thakur reached 51 before being undone by Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc finished things up by bouncing out Mohammed Shami.

India’s fans, whipped up by Virat Kohli, created a hostile atmosphere at the change of innings and Warner lasted just eight balls before nicking off to Mohammed Siraj.

Marnus Labuschagne was woken from a nap on the balcony to dash out at number three, and became the latest batter to take a nasty-looking blow to the hand when Siraj got one to lift aggressively at him.

  • Mid-year budget review should address the issue of misery in the economy – Minority to govt

Mid-year budget review should address the issue of misery in the economy – Minority to govt

Minority leader in Parliament, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has advised government to come up with a mid-year budget review that details specific steps it is taking to restore the economy.

“The most important matter of concern to us is the state of our economy and the fact that the government has announced an International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme and concluded same.

“It is our prayer that the mid-year review will address the issue of misery in the economy and be one that restores hope—a mid-year review that will put the country back on the path to economic recovery and unite all of us,” Dr. Forson stated.

According to him, the government continues to engage hefty spending despite having a limited budget.

He said “government’s lifestyle does not correspond to the financial constraints we face as a country.”

Meanwhile, speaking on the IMF facility, Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu opined that even though the US$3 billion, which will be spread over three years, on face value is not enough for the country’s expenditure, its significance is enormous.

“The significance of it is that it gives confirmation by the IMF and World Bank that you are on a good trajectory – and that also serves to unlock other funds from the bilateral engagements you have, and the IMF and World Bank then come in as guarantors for your own sustenance; and that is the import of it.

“That notwithstanding, we should also ensure that what comes into the national kitty is utilised in fulfillment of our own promises and pledges so that we are able to keep ourselves on track,” he added.

According to him, the government will have to cut down its expenditure as part of the IMF conditionality in a manner that will negatively impact employment and infrastructural development.

“I think that at the heart of these discussions with the IMF, two things stand out: cut down expenditure and increase domestic revenue. This will require some careful balance, but we will get there with the mid-year review. And when it comes, I believe parliament will come together and offer useful suggestions as to the better ways for us in this endeavour to provide that dose of resurgence to the economy.”

Duffy leaves Fulham to join Norwich

Shane Duffy, the Republic of Ireland defender, has joined Norwich City from Fulham on a three-year contract.

The 31-year-old, who has earned 55 caps for his country, featured in five Premier League matches for Fulham in the 2022-23 season.

Norwich boss David Wagner told the club’s official website: “We’re delighted to welcome Shane to the club. He’s a player with a vast amount of experience, both domestically and on the international stage.

“I’m confident that he’ll be a great fit for our squad and brings not only the on-field qualities that we have been looking for, but leadership and desire to help drive our club forward.

“From my conversations with Shane, his vision was clear. You can feel that determination and hunger to play and win football games.”

Duffy began his career in England at Everton and had spells at Blackburn and Brighton before a loan move to Fulham last summer was made permanent in the January transfer window.

  • Inter Milan: Road to the Champions League final

Inter Milan: Road to the Champions League final

Inter Milan will face a challenging task as they aim to defy the odds and secure victory in the Champions League final against Manchester City on Saturday.

Since their last triumph in the 2009-10 season, Inter Milan has struggled to progress beyond the quarter-finals of the tournament. However, this season, they have already proven their critics wrong by reaching the final.

As they prepare to take on Manchester City in Istanbul, Inter Milan is determined to continue their impressive journey and crush City’s dreams of securing a historic Treble.

With three previous victories in the competition, Inter Milan is eager to add a fourth European triumph to their illustrious history.

    Group stage

The Nerazzurri were drawn in a difficult Group C alongside European heavyweights Bayern Munich and Barcelona, as well as Czech champions Viktoria Plzen.

After a defeat and a win against Bayern and Plzen respectively, Inter put themselves in command in the race for second place by overcoming Barca 1-0 at the San Siro through Hakan Calhanoglu’s effort.

A thrilling 3-3 draw at the Camp Nou a week later meant progression as runners-up could be sealed if they beat Plzen in the following match — and they did so in emphatic style with a 4-0 success.

That result dumped the Blaugrana out at the group stage for the second season running and meant Inter’s knockout place was already secured prior to another 2-0 loss at Bayern.

    Round of 16

First leg: Porto 0-0 Inter Milan. Second leg: Inter 1-0 Porto. (Inter win 1-0 on agg)

In their first-leg encounter, both Inter and Group B winners Porto squandered numerous opportunities before Romelu Lukaku, who came off the bench, found the back of the net in the 85th minute to secure the victory.

After Lukaku’s initial header struck the post, the Chelsea loanee reacted quickly to score on the rebound. This goal proved to be the decisive moment in the tie, as the second leg in Portugal ended in a goalless draw.

Lukaku’s impact off the bench and his persistence in seizing the opportunity played a crucial role in Inter’s triumph over Porto.

    Quarter-finals

First leg: Benfica 0-2 Inter Milan. Second leg: Inter 3-3 Benfica. (Inter win 5-3 on agg)

Some had earmarked Primera Liga outfit Benfica as outside contenders to reach the latter stages but Inter saw them off in convincing style.

A 2-0 victory at the Estadio da Luz courtesy of a Nicolo Barella header and Lukaku’s penalty handed them a major advantage to take back to the San Siro.

Progession was all but sealed after they raced into a 5-1 aggregate lead before two late goals from the Eagles made it a more respectable 3-3 on the night and 5-3 overall.

    Semi-finals

First leg: AC Milan 0-2 Inter Milan. Second leg: Inter 1-0 AC Milan. (Inter win 3-0 on agg)

The ruthless efficiency Inter have exhibited throughout the competition was on show once again in their semi-final against bitter rivals AC Milan.

A dominant opening period in the first leg saw Simone Inzaghi’s men race into a 2-0 lead through Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

A fifth clean sheet in six knockout games eliminated any hopes of a dramatic second-leg turnaround for the Rossoneri in a controlled display.

And when Lautaro Martinez fired home his third Champions League goal of the campaign in the 76th minute, jubilant Inter supporters began to book their flights to Turkey’s capital.

  • Aguero will watch City-Inter Champions League final at Instabul

Aguero will watch City-Inter Champions League final at Instabul

Sergio Aguero, Manchester City’s all-time leading goal-scorer with 260 goals in 390 appearances, has disclosed his plans for watching the Champions League final against Inter Milan on Saturday.

Despite leaving the club, Aguero expressed his strong desire to be present for such a significant game and will be seated among the traveling City supporters, surrounded by the people he holds closest to his heart.

“I’ll be in Istanbul and I wouldn’t miss this game for anything in the world,” said Aguero.

“This time, I’ll be one more among a sea of City fans – cheering for the team along with the rest of the crowd. I can’t wait.”

During his time at Manchester City, Sergio Aguero established himself as a prolific scorer in the UEFA Champions League. With a remarkable tally of 39 goals in the competition, Aguero holds the record for the most Champions League goals scored by a Manchester City player.

In his first Champions League appearance for the club against Napoli in September 2011, which was just his fifth game for City after joining from Atletico Madrid, Aguero showcased his talent on the European stage.

Throughout his City career, Aguero delivered several memorable performances in Europe.

Notably, he scored a dramatic last-minute winner against Villarreal, recorded a memorable hat-trick against Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich, and etched his name in City’s history by netting his 178th goal for the club against Napoli in 2017, solidifying his status as the club’s all-time leading goal-scorer.

Aguero’s contributions in the UEFA Champions League will always be remembered as significant highlights of his time at Manchester City.

Asked if he was feeling nervous ahead of the game, he said: “A tiny bit, sure, but I’m also very confident in the team.

“They’ve played a magnificent season, and this is the last step for a crowning finish.

“When I see the team, I see a consolidated game plan and very solid performance across all levels.

“This is football, and anything can happen – that being said, I think we’ve gotten here with the right momentum to get the result we’ve been looking for.”

As an Argentina legend, Kun is also fascinated to see two of his compatriots potentially go head-to-head in Istanbul with World Cup-winning duo Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez both likely to feature at some stage.

“It’s a great pride to have two major Argentine players in the Champions League final,” he said.

“We’ve seen the brilliant season Julian has had, with positive notes in every direction.

“I’ve always said it’s not easy to adapt to your first season in Europe when you have come from South America, but even so, Julian was able to perform excellently and stay up to the level demanded by a club like City.

“He’s scored crucial goals, adopted the team’s style, and showed nothing but commitment.

“There’s many joys to come for City thanks to Julian, I believe.”

“As for Lautaro, after the World Cup, he’s had a very important part to play for Inter and he’s a key member of the team.

“It’d be great to see him play with Julian at the same time – but I cannot be neutral in this case. I hope City and Julian win this game, that’s what we’ve all been waiting for.”

And Aguero admits he couldn’t be happier for his old friend and former strike partner Edin Dzeko to be playing in such a huge game at the age of 37.

“It does make me really glad,” he said. “He deserves it. He’s an amazing player and a great human being, too.

“I can’t help looking back to the goal he scored against QPR in 2012 – that made turning the tables possible in such an important match.

“Edin remains a dangerous player with a will to score at any moment. I’m not surprised he’s been able to perform so well this season.”

Finally, how does he see the match going? Can City finally win a first Champions League title?

“It’ll be tough, I know that much,” said Kun.

“Reaching the Champions League final is no easy feat. Inter have earned their place for a reason.

“They have a consistently solid defence, they fight tooth-and-nail in the midfield, and their attack is versatile – with the possibilities afforded by Lautaro, Edin and Romelu Lukaku.

“It’s important to leave favouritism aside when we get to this stage… but City have arrived with great confidence.

“The lads know what they need to do on the field and that gets my hopes up. The team has fought long and hard to achieve this title for a long time.

“I hope this is it and that’s why I wouldn’t miss this game for the world.”

Green Ghana Day: Akufo-Addo keen on protecting Ghanaians from climate change

President Akufo-Addo has reiterated his government’s strong commitment to protecting the environment amidst the challenges posed by climate change.

In light of the pressing global need for sustainable measures to mitigate the negative impacts of global warming, the President emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts.

On the occasion of the 2023 Green Ghana Day to plant 10 million tree seedlings this year, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the significance of ongoing initiatives such as the Green Ghana Project.

In his address at the University of Ghana, Legon, President Akufo-Addo called upon all Ghanaians to actively contribute to the preservation of the environment.

Recognizing the unprecedented global environmental challenges that threaten our existence and the fate of our planet, the president stated that the climate crisis affects our health, livelihoods, security, and our future.

“We are living in a time of unprecedented global environmental challenges that threaten our existence and the faith of our planet. The climate crisis is affecting our health, livelihood, security, and our future and it is the major obstacle to sustainable development.

“The inter-governmental panel on climate change reports that human activities have emitted some 2.4 trillion of carbon dioxide since the pre-industrial era and half of that amount remains in the atmosphere till this very day.”

The Green Ghana Project aims to restore Ghana’s forest cover through extensive tree-planting campaigns and other conservation endeavors.

To bolster Ghana’s reforestation efforts, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, urged citizens to embrace a sense of ownership and accountability toward the trees they plant. By fostering a collective responsibility, Ghana can enhance its endeavors to restore forest cover and combat deforestation.

He called upon all individuals, without exception, to actively contribute to the restoration of Ghana’s forest cover.

  • BDCs have been cornered due to Gold for Oil policy – Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors

BDCs have been cornered due to Gold for Oil policy – Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors

Dr. Patrick Kwaku Ofori, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors, has expressed concerns about the government’s gold for oil policy, stating that it has put bulk oil distributors in a difficult position.

According to Dr. Ofori, the policy came as a surprise to them, and it has created intense competition between the distributors and the government.

Speaking on the policy and its impact on the oil distribution industry in the country, Dr. Ofori noted that the policy will have a toll on the regulators’ revenue generation, “because none of the BDCs or those BDCs who have paid their license fee did not necessarily pay for a license fee to be cornered a percentage of the matter.”

He said on JoyNews’ PM Express Business Edition that “They want to be given the right climate to conduct their business. And also don’t forget these private entities also employ Ghanaians and they also pay their taxes.

“So it’s a bit of a tricky situation there, and the programme obviously impacted on private sector participation judging from how private sector can also assess the proceeds of the revenue coming from the gold purchases.”

He however suggested that government could change their policy to allow private sector engagement.

“But if government intends to change their policy with regards to the gold for oil and allow private sector participation and say that ‘well  as a country, all our revenue that we’re going to generate from maybe gold export, we’re going to use maybe a percentage of it to finance our refined product importation.

“And by so doing, either through the Central Bank reactivating the forex option so that both the private sector and the public entities who are interested in importing refined products can go through those competitive processes to be able to have the product.’”

He also stated that another option was for the Bank of Ghana to surrender all gold proceeds and revenue in a way to guarantee forex availability to the commercial banks for all importers to have access to them.

The gold for oil policy was implemented by the government as a strategic response to the country’s limited foreign exchange reserves.

The aim of the policy is for the government to directly exchange gold for oil, thereby reducing reliance on foreign currency, especially the dollar, as a means to manage inflation in the country.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has extended its investigation into the activities and expenditure of the now-defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee Against Illegal Mining (IMCIM) by interrogating two additional individuals.

Horace Ekow Ewusi, the former 1st Vice-Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Central Region, and Seth Mantey, a journalist with Peace FM, were both arrested and questioned as part of the ongoing probe.

These interrogations followed the recent questioning of Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the former Chairman of the IMCIM, by the Special Prosecutor. The IMCIM was tasked with addressing the issue of illegal mining in Ghana, and Prof. Frimpong-Boateng compiled a report that identified various individuals involved in illegal mining, including Ekow Ewusi and Mantey.

Sources reveal that Ekow Ewusi and Mantey were interviewed, cautioned, and subsequently granted bail. Their roles in the IMCIM’s activities and expenditure are being closely examined in light of the report submitted by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng to the Presidency.

Suspend Tug of War/Pillow Fight in schools – GES directs Regional Directors

The GES in a letter dated 18th May, 2023, approved of the two sports and requested Regional Directors to officially inform Metro, Municipal and District Directors and Heads of Second Cycle Institutions that approval has been granted.

But in a statement on 8th June 2023, the GES ordered the suspension of the games. According to the GES, this is to deepen stakeholder engagement on the policy.

Prior to the suspension, some social media users raised concern over the safety of students who engage in these sporting activities.

    Tug of War

The teams are positioned on either end of a long rope, and they pull the rope with all their strength in an attempt to overpower the opposing team and drag them across a center line or into a marked zone.

The team that successfully moves the marker past the designated line or zone wins the game.

Tug of War requires a combination of physical strength, teamwork, and strategy. It is often played as a recreational activity, as well as a competitive sport at various levels, including local, national, and international competitions.

  • Study reveals over 100 million Indians are diabetic

Study reveals over 100 million Indians are diabetic

A recently published study in Lancet has revealed that 101 million individuals in India, which accounts for 11.4% of the country’s population, are currently living with diabetes.

The study, commissioned by the health ministry, also highlighted that an additional 136 million people, or 15.3% of the population, were living with pre-diabetes.

The most prevalent type of diabetes is Type 2, where individuals experience elevated blood sugar levels due to insufficient insulin production or an inadequate response to the hormone.

The latest study, published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, is considered to be the first to comprehensively cover every state to assess the country’s burden of non-communicable diseases.

Researchers said they found that the prevalence of diabetes in India’s population was much higher than previously estimated. The WHO had estimated 77 million people suffering from diabetes, and nearly 25 million were pre-diabetics, at a higher risk of developing diabetes in near future.

“It is a ticking time bomb,” Dr RM Anjana, lead author of the study and managing director at Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, told The Indian Express newspaper.

“If you have pre-diabetes, conversion to diabetes is very, very fast in our population; more than 60% of people with pre-diabetes end up converting to diabetes in the next five years,” she said.

Image caption,Indians suffering from diabetes at a a walk to promote awareness about the condition in Bangalore city

The decade-long study was conducted by the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and involved 113,000 participants over the age of 20 from every state in India.

Data collected in 2008 was extrapolated for 2021 using demographics in the latest National Family Health Survey, the most comprehensive household survey of health and social indicators by the government.

The highest prevalence of diabetes was observed in Goa (26.4%), Puducherry (26.3%) and Kerala (25.5%).

The study warned of a sharp rise in diabetes in states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Arunachal Pradesh where the prevalence was lower.

Also diabetes was more frequent in urban than rural areas, the study found.

“Changing lifestyles, improved standards of living, migration to cities, erratic working hours, sedentary habits, stress, pollution, change in food habits and easy availability of fast food are some of the reasons why diabetes is rising in India,” Rahul Baxi, a consultant diabetologist at Bombay Hospital, told the BBC.

Dr Baxi said that diabetes was “no more a disease of the affluent or of those in the cities”.

“I see a good number of patients travelling from smaller towns. The prevalence of pre-diabetes is even higher and many people are undiagnosed for a long time.”

This picture taken on August 8, 2011, 19 year old Indian resident Vipin Yadav gets his blood sugar test done by Delhi government docters at a mobile clinic outside a slum in Geeta Colony area of New Delhi.
Image caption,A 19-year-old resident of Delhi gets his blood sugar test done at a clinic

Dr Baxi said he has been seeing a lot of younger patients with diabetes over the last few years.

“I have seen some cases of children of my patients who just checked their glucose levels at home because their parents were checking and they found the levels high!,” he said.

Diabetes affects about one in 11 adults worldwide and increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and limb amputation.

It is normally split into type 1 and type 2.

Type 1 diabetes is a disease of the immune system. It errantly attacks the body’s insulin factories (beta-cells) so there is not enough of the hormone to control blood sugar levels.

Type 2 diabetes is largely seen as a disease of poor lifestyle as body fat can affect the way the insulin works.

Helicopter crash leaves 4 Tunisian soldiers dead

Tragedy struck in Tunisia’s northwest as a helicopter carrying four soldiers on military duty crashed into the sea, claiming their lives.

President Kais Saied extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families, acknowledging that the “accident cost the lives of four army men.”

Following the incident, President Saied emphasized the necessity to “renew military equipment” during a meeting with the country’s defense minister.

He recognized that such accidents could occur in any nation but admitted that the deterioration of certain equipment in Tunisia had resulted in these unfortunate tragedies.

Jonny Evans joins Northern Ireland squad for Euro 2024 qualifiers

Jonny Evans has made a comeback to the Northern Ireland squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers.

However, due to a long list of injured senior players, manager Michael O’Neill will once again rely on the country’s promising youth talent.

Evans, whose contract with Leicester is expiring this summer, missed out on adding to his 100 caps in March due to a hamstring injury. Nonetheless, he has been included in the 28-man squad for the matches against Denmark (away) and Kazakhstan (home).

Unfortunately, a number of experienced players including Steven Davis, Stuart Dallas, Corry Evans, Liam Boyce, Josh Magennis, Conor Washington, and Shane Ferguson are still sidelined with injuries.

As a result, O’Neill has introduced five uncapped players into the squad, and a total of 15 out of the 28 players have earned fewer than 10 caps for the national team.

Nottingham Forest defender Aaron Donnelly, West Ham teenager Callum Marshall and Larne forward Lee Bonis have all received their first call-ups, with the uncapped Sean Goss and Eoin Toal again included after not featuring in March’s fixtures.

Blackpool striker Shayne Lavery returns after a hamstring injury kept him out of the last squad, although there will be a question over his fitness levels as he has managed only one appearance, as a substitute away to Norwich on the final day, since being sidelined in February.

There is also a return for Ethan Galbraith, who earned the last of his two international caps back in 2020.

The 22-year-old is a free agent this summer after leaving Manchester United, having spent last season on loan at Salford.

O’Neill has been working with several players from both the senior ranks and the under-21s at a series of training camps in recent weeks, aiming to keep his players sharp following the end of their domestic campaigns.

Northern Ireland travel to Copenhagen to face Denmark on Friday June 16 before taking on Kazakhstan at Windsor Park the following Monday.

In a momentous auction held in New York, the largest ruby ever presented for sale has been sold for a remarkable price of nearly $35 million (£28 million).

Unveiled last year, the colossal gemstone weighing 55.22 carats was unearthed in a mine located in Mozambique.

Originally an uncut marvel boasting a weight of 101 carats, the ruby has been christened “Estrela de Fura,” which translates to “Star of Fura” in Portuguese, paying homage to the mining company responsible for its discovery.

Polished rubies exceeding five carats in size are exceedingly scarce, making this gem a truly extraordinary find.

Sotheby’s, the renowned auction house responsible for facilitating the sale, hailed the ruby as a “once-in-a-lifetime” jewel, underscoring its rarity and allure.

Furthermore, this noteworthy auction also witnessed a record-breaking price achieved for a pink diamond.

A magnificent 10.5-carat gem originating from Botswana, described as a fancy purplish-pink stone, commanded a price just shy of $35 million.

  • Children stabbed in Annecy park in stable condition

Children stabbed in Annecy park in stable condition

Officials have revealed that the four young children who were stabbed in a park in Annecy, France, are now in a stable condition.

The children, aged between one and three, are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

The knifeman was apprehended by police after entering a children’s playground to carry out the attack. Among the injured are a three-year-old British child and another child of Dutch nationality. Two adults were also harmed, with one in critical condition.

According to police, the suspect is a 31-year-old Syrian who had refugee status in Sweden.

Regional deputy Antoine Armand condemned the attack as “abominable” and stated that authorities had limited information as they launched an investigation.

In a graphic video shared on social media, the assault is captured in a playground where children and their caregivers are present. Suddenly, a man wielding a knife enters, prompting immediate screams. He specifically targets children, including one in a pushchair.

French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne and Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin visited the scene of the attack.

During a news conference, Ms. Borne stated that the attacker had “no criminal or psychiatric record.”

Annecy prosecutor Line Bonnet-Mathis informed reporters that the young victims ranged from 22 months to three years old. She added that there appears to be no indication of a terrorist motive.

The suspect, who has refugee status in Sweden and recently arrived in France, left behind a wife and a three-year-old daughter. In an unsuccessful asylum application last year in France, he claimed to be a Syrian Christian.

During the incident, the attacker invoked the name of Jesus Christ.

A woman identified as the suspect’s ex-wife, speaking to BFM TV, affirmed that her former partner was a Christian.

“He does not call me for four months. [Our relationship] stopped because we lived in Sweden and he did not want to live in Sweden anymore,” she said, adding that he had not previously shown a violent streak.

In recent years, France has become accustomed to knife attacks, often carried out by solitary young men with backgrounds in petty crime and some Islamist connection. It is clear that this attack is of a different nature.

So far, most politicians are being careful not to leap to conclusions, but it is inevitable that the attack will feed into the debate on immigration.

  • West Ham fans throng streets to celebrate Europa Conference League title

West Ham fans throng streets to celebrate Europa Conference League title

West Ham were greeted with a spectacular reception as passionate fans lined the streets of east London to commemorate their remarkable triumph in the Europa Conference League.

The Hammers secured their first significant title since their victory in the 1980 FA Cup, and their first European honor since 1965, defeating Italian side Fiorentina 2-1 in Prague on a memorable Wednesday night.

On a warm and sunny evening in the capital, the jubilant supporters adorned in the iconic claret and blue filled the sidewalks as the Hammers proudly showcased the coveted silverware during an open-top bus parade.

The celebratory journey commenced at the historic Upton Park, the club’s former home, and culminated at Stratford Town Hall, where the team received a warm reception.

This historic occasion evoked memories of the past, as only West Ham fans of a certain age had witnessed such triumphant celebrations.

The last time a parade of this nature took place was after the 1965 European Cup Winners’ Cup victory, where football legends like Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, and Martin Peters experienced the joy of lifting trophies.

However, the younger generation wholeheartedly embraced the festivities, enthusiastically scaling lamp posts and bus stops to gain the best possible view of their revered heroes, while also igniting colorful flares to enhance the vibrant atmosphere.

Initially assuming a more subdued role on the bus, manager David Moyes captured cherished moments by photographing his elated players as they posed together. Yet, his infectious enthusiasm soon took hold, as he joined in with the revelry, dancing and joyously balancing the trophy on his head.

Lifting the trophy appears to be a fitting way for captain Declan Rice to bow out, with chairman David Sullivan confirming the England international will be allowed to leave the club this summer, with a bidding war expected to commence soon.

Rice was emotional on top of the bus, admitting it does not feel “real”.

“This is absolutely incredible, when you’re a kid and you love football as much as I do, and the lads do, you see teams having trophy parades,” he said. “I was once a kid watching teams do trophy parades and now to be doing one and captaining the side is just so, so special, I can’t even put into words.

“We knew it would be exciting and the fans would come out, I am just trying to take it all in, we don’t get to experience this ever. These moments don’t come around very often.

“I’ve seen top captains over the years lift trophies and it was my time at West Ham to lift the trophy. It doesn’t really feel real.

“At 24, captain of West Ham lifting a trophy in a European competition, I don’t think it is going to hit me for a while, but I am going to enjoy it and be as happy for as long as possible.

“Bobby Moore, Billy Bonds, I am seeing messages that I am now in that category, I don’t really know what to say. Bizarre.”

Moyes spent much of the season under pressure following a disappointing Premier League campaign, but Rice believes he is now the club’s best-ever manager.

The England midfielder added on Sky Sports News: “I think he goes down as the best manager West Ham have ever had. The circumstances, when he first came in, kept us twice, European competition, we finished fifth, sixth, a semi-final (Europa League) and now we’ve won this, he deserves all the credit he gets.

“He’s a top man and as you can see he is buzzing.”

Jarrod Bowen was West Ham’s hero in the final as he scored a 90th-minute winner, capping off a remarkable turnaround in his career having been playing at non-league Hereford nine years ago after being rejected as a youngster by Aston Villa.

“I love the game and these moments make it all worth it, the rejections and not going the way you want it,” he said.

“You fast forward 10 years and you are on an open-top bus parade for winning a European trophy so from where I have come, my mum was crying on the phone, my dad was there.

“It is a bit surreal to say I have won a European trophy from where I have come from. I love it.”

  • I don’t have to be a minister to survive – Prof Frimpong-Boateng

    I don’t have to be a minister to survive – Prof Frimpong-Boateng

As a consummate medical practitioner he is, former Environment Minister Professor Frimpong-Boateng has maintained that he would not be impoverished by the lack of appointment from the Akufo-Addo-led government.

The venerable Cardiothoracic surgeon said this in a latest interview following reports of  his arrest by the Special Prosecutor’s office.

Prof. Boateng’s statement was a response to a question about the financial benefits that accrue to political office holders hence influencing their consciences on policies and contracts.

“When I was Minister, I did so many things from my own initiative. If you go to the Ministry of Environment…using my connections and so on, I (got) treasures for the Ministry and the government and the President is aware of some of these things. So I don’t have to be a Minister to survive,” he said.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor detained the former chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining on May 16, over some GH320 million unaccounted for by the Committee while being questioned over his recent galamsey report.

It has been speculated that Prof Frimpong Boateng has gotten himself in the bad books of some government officials over his report, hence may be ostracised – losing out on some preferential treatment such as being appointed minister.

In an interview with JoyNews on June 7, 2023, Professor Frimpong-Boateng indicated that he is unperturbed about missing out on a ministerial position in future as his wealth was amassed through hard work and not through his position as minister.

According to the professor, there are some “people who need that position to thrive or survive and do many things”, suggesting that some individuals solely rely on their positions in government just to make ends meet.

Professor Frimpong-Boateng, certain of his position in life, reiterated that “I don’t need a government position to live in this country and they know it.”

Despite facing backlash for his report on illegal mining which accuses some government officials of masterminding the illegal activity, the former minister noted that he remains committed to ensuring the development of the country.

“I’m still doing things for this country. Running through hospitals, trying to build a school, training people, research,” Prof Frimpong-Boateng revealed.

Meanwhile, Professor Frimpong-Boateng says he is not afraid of being convicted as he has nothing to hide.

According to the physician and cardiothoracic surgeon who established the National Cardiothoracic Center and the Ghana Red Cross Society, he would be among the most wealthy individuals in the country should he have engaged in thievery.

He insists that he remains a victim of the unjust system being controlled by some powerful individuals.

  • I would have handed over Frimpong-Boateng myself if he supported galamsey – Pianim

I would have handed over Frimpong-Boateng myself if he supported galamsey – Pianim

Economist and prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Pianim, has voiced support for Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, asserting that the former minister was not personally implicated in illegal small-scale mining activities, known as galamsey.

Pianim stated that if credible evidence emerged linking Prof Frimpong-Boateng to galamsey promotion during his time as chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), he would have personally reported him to the police.

“If Prof Frimpong-Boateng is in any way connected to galamsey from stopping it or being eradicated, I will be the first person to take him to the police. What I am saying is that in an investigation, when I am investigating somebody, people are deemed innocent until proven guilty and somebody of his status, somewhere in the world, can be given serious recognition” he said.

He made the remarks during an interview with Accra-based TV3 in response to the news of the former IMCIM chairman being summoned by the Office of the Special Prosecutor as part of an ongoing corruption investigation.

“I don’t know the of information the special prosecutor had, such that whatever he [reference to Prof Frimpong-Boateng] did he may run away outside and because of that he needed to prevent, he could have taken his passport? And immediately after it was done, we should have known the charges. Are we being made to infer that he is part of the criminal gang that is promoting galamsey? Or what has he done? Or he is related to the defamation or the leaking of the report that he made to the president and the request of the president.

“If he did that, I’m not a lawyer but I have been in public life. In America, we have what we call Executive Privileges. A minister talking to his president, you cannot use that as a charge against him for defamation. Mr Gabby Otchere-Darko is an important member of the kitchen cabinet of the president, Capt. Koda is a serious member of our security services and the military.

“So, his reputation is important for the security services, if somebody is defaming him, he has the right to try to defend himself and I have no problem with that. The personality of Professor Frimpong-Boateng, this is somebody who’s been saving lives in Ghana, and I don’t think we should disgrace him in a way it seems to be done” he added.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor is said to have detained the former chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining on May 16, during questioning over his recent galamsey report but was immediately granted a gh2 million bail.

Sources say he is yet to account for some GH320 million spent by the Committee.

Meanwhile, Mr Kwame Pianim has urged President Akufo-Addo to fulfil his promise of conducting a comprehensive investigation into the allegations made by Professor Frimpong-Boateng.

Pianim added that if the allegations were baseless, the president should hold a press conference to declare it as baseless.

“We need to show that we are delivering. For me, the president should rise to the occasion, and pursue the investigation that he said he was going to do. He has the report now, if it is rubbish, let him do a press conference to say my security forces have investigated all the allegations made by prof and its rubbish based on nothing” he added.

Professor Frimpong-Boateng, reacting to the recent development, stated that he is not afraid of being convicted as he has nothing to hide.

Interacting with the media on June 7, the former minister said he would be among the most wealthy individuals in the country should he have engaged in thievery.

According to Professor Frimpong-Boateng, he remains a victim of the unjust system being controlled by some powerful individuals.

Liverpool reclaim Melwood training ground for women’s team

Liverpool has repurchased their former Melwood training ground, this time for their women’s team.

The men’s first team had relocated from the West Derby site in November 2020 to a new facility at their existing academy base in Kirkby.

Originally, plans were in place to develop the land into a housing complex, but protests from the local community led to a change of plans.

With the arrival of the Robbie Fowler-Jamie Carragher academy, Liverpool decided to buy back their former training ground.

As part of the move, the LFC Women’s team will now be aligned with the official club crest, moving away from their previous training base at Tranmere’s facility on the Wirral.

“This is a truly historic moment for Liverpool Football Club and the continued desire of the LFC Women’s board to elevate and develop our women’s first team and category one professional game academy,” said Liverpool’s managing director Andy Hughes.

“We also have an opportunity to further develop the use of the site to support the local community by using it as an additional base for LFC Foundation.

“We are delighted that FEFA (Fowler Education and Football Academy) will continue to use the site for its college that provides sport and educational opportunities for young people.

“We have always taken the views of the local community seriously and we look forward to re-engaging with them in the near future.”

Torus will use the funds from the sale of Melwood to build much-needed homes across Merseyside.

Developments also continue apace at Anfield where the 282-tonne roof of the old Anfield Road stand has been removed to make way for the completion of the new stand which is due to open for the start of next season and expand the ground’s capacity to 61,000.

Alhaji Yakubu arrives in court hearing Saglemi Housingcase in a wheelchair

Alhaji Ziblim Yakubu, the former Chief Director of the Ministry of Works and Housing, was transported to court in a wheelchair to face 43 criminal charges in the ongoing Saglemi Housing case.

The High Court in Accra had ordered his appearance within 48 hours to respond to the charges.

Alhaji Yakubu, along with other individuals including a former Minister for Works and Housing, was charged with various offenses, including causing financial loss to the state.

Due to his ill health, Alhaji Ziblim Yakubu was transported from Yendi in the Northern Region to Accra and brought before the High Court.

He pleaded not guilty to all charges but requested that the trial proceed in his absence due to his health condition.

This led to a debate between the prosecution and his counsel. The presiding judge granted the application for trial in absentia and adjourned the case to June 12, 2023.

The judge also instructed the prosecution to organize their witness statements.

Two former Ministers of Works and Housing, Alhaji Collins Dauda and Kweku Agyeman Mensah, and three others, have been arraigned in court over the Saglemi Affordable Housing infractions.

The five were charged on August 5, 2021, with 52 counts, including causing financial loss to the state.

They are facing charges of intentionally misapplying public property, causing financial loss to the state, and issuing false certificates in the Saglemi Affordable Housing Project, which involved the sum of $200 million.

Alhaji Collins Dauda, together with Kweku Agyeman Mensah, Alhaji Ziblim Yakubu, Chief Director of the Ministry, Andrew Clocanas, Executive Chairman of Constructura OAS Ghana Limited, and Nouvi Tetteh Angelo, have pleaded not guilty to all 52 charges.

While Alhaji Collins Dauda was admitted to self-recognizance bail, Kweku Agyeman Mensah and Alhaji Ziblim Yakubu were granted bail in the sums of $65 million each. In addition, they were to produce three sureties, one of whom should be a public officer.

Andrew Clocanas, the fourth accused person, was also admitted to bail in the sum of $179 million with three sureties, one of whom should be a public servant. Nouvi Tetteh Angelo, the fifth accused person, was admitted to bail in the amount of $13 million with three sureties.

Police arrest 4 suspected kidnappers in Cape Coast

Police have apprehended four individuals suspected of being involved in kidnapping activities at a rented residence in Ntranoa, near Ankaful, in Cape Coast.

One of the suspects, who had allegedly disguised himself and entered a mosque, reportedly lost his life. Meanwhile, two other suspects, including the supposed leader who is believed to be in his 60s, are currently evading capture.

In an operation conducted on Wednesday evening, the Police successfully rescued several victims, all in their 20s, and promptly transferred them to a hospital for necessary care.

According to information obtained from the local community, the suspected kidnappers enticed their victims from various parts of the country, including Accra, by offering job opportunities and subsequently housed them within their fenced apartment for illicit purposes.

Reports indicate that the apartment is owned by a university lecturer.

Some residents told the GNA that they noticed the presence of the suspects, believed to be francophone nationals, in the community about two months ago.

However, their decent disposition did not give them away as being involved in any illegal activities, such as trafficking or ritual activities.

Some residents said that on Wednesday afternoon, at about 1300 hours, one of the victims managed to escape and called for help from the community members.

The matter was then reported to the Regional Police Headquarters whose timely intervention saved two of the suspects from being lynched by the community members.

One of them, who also attempted to escape, was reportedly caught and beaten at Atrokwa before he was handed over to the Police.

Later in the evening, a female who identified herself as the cook for the suspects was also arrested.

The Police reportedly retrieved talismans, knives and other implements from the apartment. The victims were put on a bus with their luggage and mattresses.

The Police declined to comment on the issue when contacted by the GNA.

I’d have been among the rich if I had engaged in thievery – Prof Frimpong Boateng

Former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Frimpong-Boateng has broken his silence over his arrest for alleged corrupt activities.

Interacting with JoyNews on June 7, the former minister said he would be among the most wealthy individuals in the country should he have engaged in thievery.

“If I were a thief, I would be one of the very wealthy people in this country. If we all thought about Ghana and had the best interests of this country at heart, we would not be where we are now,” he said.

Professor Frimpong-Boateng again noted that he is not afraid of being convicted as he has nothing to hide.

According to the professor, he remains a victim of the unjust system being controlled by some powerful individuals. He compared his situation to the difficulties Jesus Christ faced at the hands of the Romans.

“I am not sacred. Why should I be scared? Even the son of God, Jesus Christ, the sinless one was convicted and killed. So if people want to kill you, they know what to do to kill you. This is what I want to say. If people who have the power to do things… they will know what to do because it happened to even the sinless one,” he said.

Political Scientist and lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has entreated Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng to tread careful as he carries out his mandate.

He made the request following reports on the arrest of former Environment Minister, Professor Frimpong-Boateng over corrupt-activities by the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

Prof Frimpong-Boateng is being investigated by the Office over his Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) report that accused many government officials of being behind activities that affect the environment negatively.

He was granted a GH¢2 million bail as investigations continue.

Reacting to the recent development in a Facebook post, Professor Gyampo questioned the Special Prosecutor’s diligence and advised him to “tone down on his youthful exuberance and must not be rushing to please anybody.”

He strongly contested the arrest of the former minister, noting that Professor Frimpong-Boateng cannot be arrested without a charge.

  • Ghanaians to mark Green Ghana Day tomorrow

Ghanaians to mark Green Ghana Day tomorrow

The highly anticipated Green Ghana Day is scheduled to take place tomorrow, on Friday, June 9, 2023, throughout the entire country.

This nationwide initiative aims to plant an impressive 10 million seedlings.

The event was inaugurated in 2021 by President Akufo-Addo, organised under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, as part of the government’s ambitious afforestation and reforestation agenda.

The primary objective of the initiative is to restore the country’s depleted forest cover, which has been adversely affected by illegal small-scale mining and timber logging activities.

The maiden edition targeted to plant five million trees, but ended up planting over seven million seedlings.

In 2022, more than 26 million trees were planted, exceeding the 20 million target.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II officially launched this year’s edition of the Green Ghana Day on Wednesday, May 17 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, urging all well-meaning Ghanaians to support the tree planting exercise.

The revered King said the Day presented an opportunity for Ghanaians to show patriotism and commitment towards protecting the country’s forest cover and leave the younger generation a much richer and greener Ghana.

“Government cannot do it alone. We must all get involved and support Government to come to grips with these matters,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu said.

The Asantehene pledged to lead his chiefs and people to plant 2.5 million trees to protect the enclave of Lake Bosomtwe in the Bosomtwe District of the Region.

The Government since 2017 has been taking several measures to restore the country’s lost forest cover, hence the Green Ghana Project is a necessary intervention to create national awareness of the necessity for collective action towards the restoration of the degraded landscapes.

The programme also aims at inculcating values of planting and nurturing of trees in the citizens, particularly among the younger generation, to mitigate the negative effects of climate change as well as beautifying the environment.

Averagely, more than 81 percent of the seedlings planted in 2021 survived while 72 per cent survived in 2022.

  • Intense smoke from Canada wildfires forces millions to mask up

Intense smoke from Canada wildfires forces millions to mask up

Intense wildfires in Canada have resulted in poor air quality levels, leading authorities to advise millions of people in North America to wear N95 masks when outdoors.

In response, New York has announced the distribution of free masks starting Thursday. Canada has recommended mask usage for those unable to stay indoors.

Officials have warned that the hazardous smoky conditions are likely to persist throughout the weekend.

The majority of the smoke is originating from Quebec, where approximately 150 fires are currently burning.

With over 15,000 residents expected to be evacuated in the province, it has become Quebec’s most severe fire season on record. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has stated that one million masks will be provided to residents of the state on Thursday.

“This is a temporary situation. This is not Covid,” she said at a news conference. The governor added that New York City buses and trains have high-quality air filtration systems that make them safe forms of travel.

Environment Canada has said that conditions are worsening in Toronto on Thursday, as more smoke pours in.

In a special weather bulletin on Wednesday, the agency recommended that anyone outdoors wear a mask.

“These fine particles generally pose the greatest risk to health. However, respirators do not reduce exposure to the gases in wildfire smoke,” the Environment Canada statement said.

Meanwhile, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified the air quality in much of the north-east as “unhealthy” especially for people with respiratory concerns.

In total, millions of people around North America are thought to be under a form of air quality warning.

In New York, an orange haze blanketed the city’s skyline and shrouded landmarks including the Statue of Liberty.

“We recommend all New Yorkers limit outdoor activity to the greatest extent possible,” Mayor Eric Adams warned on Wednesday.

Zoos have brought animals indoors, and in New York, carriage horse rides have been suspended.

On Wednesday, schools in the Washington DC area also cancelled outdoor activities as air quality levels were labelled “code red”, while Detroit was listed as the fifth worst major metropolitan area in the world on IQAir’s air pollution rankings.

Public health officials have cautioned people not to exercise outside and to minimise their exposure to the smoke as much as possible, as the air poses immediate and long-term health risks.

Canadian officials say the country is shaping up for its worst wildfire season on record.

    Statue of liberty with smoke

Experts have pointed to a warmer and drier spring than normal as the reason behind the trend. These conditions are projected to continue throughout the summer.

Fires across Canada have already burned more than 3.8m hectares (9.4m acres) of land – an area 12 times the 10-year average for this time of year.

More than 600 US firefighters have been sent to Canada to assist local officials, the White House announced on Wednesday.

Also on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held a phone call to discuss the current situation.

Climate change increases the risk of the hot, dry weather that is likely to fuel wildfires.

The world has already warmed by about 1.2C since the industrial era began, and temperatures will keep rising unless governments around the world make steep cuts to emissions.

Mac Allister completes ‘dream’ Liverpool move

Liverpool has made an acquisition in their midfield as manager Jurgen Klopp sets out to strengthen the team.

Alexis Mac Allister, the talented Argentine player from Brighton, has joined the Reds.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who was part of Argentina’s World Cup-winning squad, contributed significantly to Brighton’s impressive sixth-placed finish in the Premier League, securing qualification for the Europa League under the guidance of manager Roberto De Zerbi.

He told Liverpoolfc.com: “It feels amazing. It’s a dream come true, it’s amazing to be here and I can’t wait to get started.

“I wanted to be in [from] the first day of pre-season, so it’s good that everything is done. I’m looking forward to meeting my team-mates.

“It was a fantastic year for me — World Cup, what we achieved with Brighton — but now it’s time to think about Liverpool and try to be a better player and a better human being every day.

“Since I won the World Cup, I said that I want to win more trophies and I think that this club will help me to do that — that’s the aim and when you are in a big club like this one you have to win trophies. So, that’s what I want.

“Since I arrived here, I can see how big this club is — the players we have, the staff, everyone. I’m really pleased and looking forward to playing for this club.”

    Seagull takes flight

“He will always be welcome here at the Amex and in the city. On behalf of all Albion fans, I would like to thank Alexis for the many amazing memories and superb performances in a Brighton shirt and wish him well for the next chapter in his career.”

Trump likely to be hit with new charges over classified documents

Donald Trump has reportedly received notification of being a target in a criminal investigation regarding potential mishandling of classified files following his departure from the White House.

The move by federal prosecutors to inform the former president about the probe suggests that he may soon face charges. This would mark the second indictment for Mr. Trump, who is currently campaigning for another presidential run.

Since last year, prosecutors have been examining the transfer of files to Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. In August, the property underwent a search during which 11,000 documents were seized, including approximately 100 classified files, some of which were labeled as top secret.

According to three sources familiar with the matter, Mr. Trump was informed about being under investigation. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing and dismissed the investigation as politically motivated.

When asked by the New York Times if he had been told he is a target of a federal investigation on Wednesday, he said “you have to understand” that he was not in direct touch with prosecutors.

CNN, ABC News, and Politico all reported on Wednesday night that Mr Trump had been notified by letter that he was the subject of a criminal investigation.

All the outlets said the move signalled charges could happen soon, but that it was possible a person would not go on to be charged.

The New York Times cited two people familiar with the matter as saying the notification came from the office of Jack Smith, a former war crimes attorney turned special prosecutor who is considering evidence.

It comes after prosecutors obtained an audio recording of Mr Trump in which he acknowledges keeping a classified document after leaving the White House.

The details of documents that may have been in Mr Trump’s possession remain unclear. Classified material usually contains information that officials feel could damage national security if made public.

It is against US law for federal officials, up to and including a president, to remove or retain classified documents at an unauthorised location.

Grand juries, set up by a prosecutor to determine whether there is enough evidence to pursue a prosecution, are believed to have met in both Miami and Washington to hear evidence.

On Wednesday, the jury in Miami heard evidence from Taylor Budowich, a former aide and spokesman to Mr Trump.

It raises the possibility that any criminal charges could be filed in Florida for procedural reasons, CBS reported.

Earlier this week, members of Mr Trump’s legal team met with investigators at the Department of Justice in Washington.

Mr Trump, who is leading in opinion polls to be the Republican Party’s 2024 candidate for president, has consistently denied wrongdoing and has criticised the justice department’s investigation as “politically motivated” and a “witch-hunt”.

Any indictment over his handling of classified documents would come after Mr Trump became the first former president to be charged with a crime, after he pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records over a hush-money payment to a porn star.

He faces a trial in that case in New York next year.

Caitlin Foord signs new Arsenal contract

Arsenal has officially announced the contract extension of forward Caitlin Foord with the Women’s Super League club.

The 28-year-old Australian player joined Arsenal in 2020 from Portland Thorns in the United States. Since then, Foord has been a key contributor, featuring in 94 matches for the club.

In the current season, she made 33 appearances, scoring 11 goals and providing nine assists, playing a significant role in Arsenal’s campaign.

“I couldn’t be happier to extend my stay here at Arsenal,” she said.

“I want to continue to get better and to help the team – I enjoy going out and training every day and wanting to be better and being surrounded by world class players. This feels like the right place – the place I want to be.”

“Caitlin is an integral part of our team so we’re all delighted by the news that she has signed a new contract,” Eidevall said.

“She is one of the best forwards in the world and has performed to a consistently high standard for us during my time here, providing some crucial goals and delivering on the biggest stages.

Putin okays African peace mission bid

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has revealed that he had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the forthcoming peace mission involving six African leaders to Russia and Ukraine.

“President Putin has welcomed the initiative by African heads of state and expressed his desire to receive the peace mission,” a statement from the South African presidency said.

On Tuesday, the African leaders involved had held discussions “exploring ways of bringing an end to the conflict”, it added.

The other leaders in the peace bid are from the Comoros, Egypt, Senegal, Uganda and Senegal – and according to a statement from the presidency on Wednesday all said they were available to travel in mid-June.

“The leaders agreed that they would engage with both President Putin and President [Volodymyr] Zelensky on the elements for a ceasefire and a lasting peace in the region.”

  • Europa Conference League: West Ham fans clash with riot police in Prague

Europa Conference League: West Ham fans clash with riot police in Prague

West Ham’s triumph in the Europa Conference League led to clashes erupting between fans and riot police in Prague on Wednesday night.

The confrontation occurred after supporters ignited flares while celebrating, prompting police officers to intervene and attempt to confiscate a lit flare in the city’s Old Town area.

As tensions escalated, riot police moved in to disperse a group of fans who had ignited a second flare. In response, some fans retaliated by throwing bottles and projectiles at the officers.

Earlier in the day, Czech police reported detaining at least 16 Italian fans for assaulting West Ham supporters outside a bar. Videos circulating on social media captured scenes of chairs being thrown and fireworks being used during the altercation.

While the celebrations initially began with a jovial atmosphere, with fans embracing, kissing, and dancing on tables in bars, the situation later turned confrontational, resulting in clashes between fans and law enforcement.

Chants of “2-1 to the cockney boys” and “Irons” also broke out as the Londoners welcomed the club’s first trophy in more than 40 years.

The final took place at the Fortuna Arena, which has a capacity of around 19,300, with West Ham receiving an official ticket allocation of 5,000, although many more travelled from the UK to be in the city during the game.

Supporters watched in bars around the city, including a group who went wild at McCarthy’s Pub in the Old Town area from the moment Jarrod Bowen gave the team the lead in the final minute of the second half.

West Ham fan Aaron, 18, said it felt “unreal” to win.

“(I’ve) never felt like it in my life,” he said.

He said his plan for the rest of the night was to “stumble back to the hotel”.

“How we get there I don’t care,” he added.

It came hours after West Ham fans were attacked by Italian supporters in the city centre, prompting police to detain 16 people.

Czech police said three people were injured during the incident, with one police officer being attacked.

One witness said fans of the Italian side were armed with “chains and belt buckles”.

There was also controversy during the match as Cristiano Biraghi of Fiorentina was seen bleeding from the back of the head after he appeared to have been hit by an object thrown from the West Ham stand.

Shortly before the end of the match, the English club put out a statement condemning the behaviour of a “small number of individuals”, adding: “These actions have no place in football, and do not in any way represent the values of our football club and the overwhelming majority of our supporters, who have behaved impeccably in Prague this week and throughout our last two seasons in European competition.”

The club said it would work with police to review the incident and take action against offenders, including implementing lifetime bans.

    President Yoweri Museveni contracts COVID

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has announced that he has tested positive for COVID-19 after one of three tests conducted on him came back positive.

The President revealed during a state of the nation address on Wednesday that he had developed mild cold symptoms, leading him to undergo testing.

Diana Atwine, the permanent secretary at the health ministry, stated that President Museveni had experienced flu-like symptoms but was in overall good health and would continue to carry out his duties.

She assured that he would adhere to the standard operating procedures for COVID-19 cases while fulfilling his responsibilities.

During the peak of the pandemic, Uganda implemented stringent measures to contain the virus, including lengthy curfews and the closure of schools and businesses. However, the country fully reopened in February 2022.

  • Court rules Japan’s ban on same-sex marriage is “in a state of unconstitutionality”

Court rules Japan’s ban on same-sex marriage is “in a state of unconstitutionality”

A court in Japan has delivered a ruling stating that the country’s prohibition on same-sex marriage is currently “in a state of unconstitutionality,” though it stopped short of declaring it outright unconstitutional.

This decision has added complexity to the ongoing debate surrounding LGBTQ+ rights in Japan.

The recent ruling from the Fukuoka district court aligns with a similar judgment made by a Tokyo court in 2022. It represents the final of five anticipated rulings within Japan’s district court system.

Interestingly, the five district courts have individually reached three different conclusions in response to lawsuits brought forward by members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Two courts have declared the ban on same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional, while one has deemed it constitutional. The remaining two courts have stated that it is “in a state of unconstitutionality.”

In 2022, an Osaka court upheld the ban, citing conformity with the postwar constitution’s definition of marriage as being based on “the mutual consent of both sexes.” Conversely, courts in Sapporo and Nagoya determined that the policy violated the constitution.

Plaintiffs in the Sapporo, Osaka and Tokyo court cases have all appealed against the rulings after their damages claims were dismissed.

On Thursday, the Fukuoka court said current marriage laws were “in a state that violates” a section of article 24 of the constitution that refers to “individual dignity and equality of the sexes”, according to the Kyodo news agency.

But the court ruled that the current legal framework did not violate other parts of the constitution, including a clause that ensures equality before the law.

Japan, the only G7 country that does not legally recognise same-sex unions, has come under mounting pressure to promote marriage equality.

The court in Fukuoka rejected a demand by three LGBTQ+ couples that the state pay them damages for denying them the right to marry, according to Kyodo. The four other courts also dismissed compensation claims.

A lawyer for the plaintiffs said details of the ruling were still being verified, adding that he thought it was likely to be similar to that of the Tokyo court.

The five rulings have reignited the debate over same-sex unions, days before Japan’s parliament is expected to pass a bill that will promote “understanding” of members of the LGBT+ community but does not address the lack of legal status for same-sex couples.

The bill was due to be debated before the recent G7 summit in Hiroshima, but opposition from conservatives inside the ruling Liberal Democratic party (LDP) forced the government to submit a watered-down version.

The bill originally said “discrimination is unacceptable” but now states that “unfair discrimination” should not be tolerated – wording that critics say has rendered the legislation meaningless.

While campaigners have welcomed court rulings describing the ban as a violation of constitutional rights, the lack of unanimity could be viewed as a minor setback in the campaign for marriage equality.

The prime minister, Fumio Kishida, has argued that the ban on same-sex marriage is “not discriminatory” and that legalising it would “fundamentally change society”.

Critics have accused Kishida of pandering to conservatives in his party while ignoring opinion polls showing that up to 70% of people support legalising same-sex unions.

Several members of his party have been criticised for making homophobic remarks, and Kishida sacked a senior aide earlier this year after he said that he would not want to live next door to an LGBTQ+ couple.

Business lobbies have called for change, arguing that Japan will struggle to remain globally competitive unless it does more to promote diversity, including marriage equality.

More than 300 municipalities in Japan allow same-sex couples to enter partnership agreements, but their rights are limited. Partners are not permitted to inherit each other’s assets or have parental rights to each other’s children, and there is no legal guarantee that they can visit each other in hospital.

  • West Ham win Europa Conference League

West Ham win Europa Conference League

Jarrod Bowen was visibly emotional as he marked his winning goal that secured West Ham the Europa Conference League, nearly tearing up in celebration.

In the 90th minute of the match against Fiorentina in Prague, Bowen swiftly reached Lucas Paqueta’s exceptional pass and skillfully dispatched the ball past Pietro Terracciano, securing a 2-1 triumph for the Hammers.

This victory not only marked the club’s first major trophy since the 1980 FA Cup but also their first European title since 1965.

Bowen told BT Sport: “You always say you want to score in the last minute and to do it here in front of these fans, I thought I was going to cry.

“I’m so happy. We haven’t had the best season, myself included, but to do it tonight, I’m over the moon.

“I think in my position you make that run 10 times you might get that ball once. As soon as you get it you’ve got to put it away.”

Bowen had earlier won the penalty from which Said Benrahma opened the scoring but Giacomo Bonaventura equalised just four minutes later for the Serie A side.

But with the game appearing set to head to extra-time, Bowen struck his 13th goal of the campaign and earned West Ham a place in next season’s Europa League.

The England international added: “Never (have I felt like this in my life). This is the biggest game of my career. The emotion, there was time for one more chance. I’m just so happy. I’m over the moon.

“I’m thinking of the party tonight. Listen to it. Listen.”
