Do not give money to children begging on the streets – Gender Minister urges Ghanaians

The Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Lariba Zuweira Abudu has reiterated the importance of refraining from giving money to child beggars.

The minister during a Minister’s Press Briefing at the Ministry of Information office on Sunday, June 4, 2023, emphasized that this action would discourage children from returning to the streets, where they often face dangerous and harsh conditions.

“If you don’t give them today and I don’t give them tomorrow, next week they will be forced to leave the streets and move away,” the minister said.

In recounting the measures put in place to reduce the number of child beggars on the streets, the minister added that the government repatriated about 400 foreign child beggars but they still find a way to return in their numbers. Hence, the only way will be to stop giving them money.

“We have done a lot to take them from the streets but somehow they find themselves back, we even repatriated 400 of them and engaged the embassies here but they find ways to come back so we have to stop giving money to minors on the streets because as adults I don’t see why we should be giving monies to six-year-olds on the streets,” Lariba said.

The minister addressed the public to provide updates on the progress and implementation of various initiatives, programs, and policies within the gender ministry.

  • We are satisfied with how our COVID funds were spent – World Bank

The Country Director of the World Bank in Ghana, Pierre Frank Laporte, has stated that the bank does not believe the funds it provided to the Ghanaian government, amounting to over $430 million, were misappropriated in the fight against COVID-19.

Laporte clarified that the funds provided by the World Bank were managed by a joint project team consisting of World Bank officials and government representatives.

He further emphasized that these funds were separate from the Ghanaian government’s budget.

During an interview with TV3, Laporte highlighted that the dedicated team overseeing the funds ensured their appropriate utilization for their intended purposes.

Payments were made directly to contractors, ensuring transparency and accountability in the disbursement process.

“We have given $430 million to Ghana for Covid. Our project funds have not gone to the budget of the Ministry of Finance, and because of this, we’ve mechanisms in place that ensure we know each and every dollar that is spent and accounted and we’ve done audits.

“Of course, there are always a few things here and, procedure-wise, maybe some documentation that needs to be followed.

“But largely speaking, we are very satisfied that all of our resources were spent in line with the procurement requirements that existed. You know, COVID-19 was implemented under emergency procurement measures by the bank,” he said.

The director said that the money given to the government of Ghana is still being used, adding that the bank was working to make more funds available.

In his most recent address to the nation, President Akufo-Addo for the umpteenth time shot down claims that government leveraged of COVID-19 to undertake corrupt activities.

“We need strong institutions and not strong men; this is the reason why we must never compromise the strength and dignity of the Chieftaincy Institution.”

He asked for peace and sanity in the Ga Dangme region to preserve and protect the customs and traditions.

  • Account for $36m after paying RIBADE JV $22.7m for ‘suspicious’ national cathedral work – Ablakwa to govt

Account for $36m after paying RIBADE JV $22.7m for ‘suspicious’ national cathedral work – Ablakwa to govt

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is demanding accountability from the government over the US$58.1million of taxpayer funds illegally withdrawn to fund the construction of the national cathedral project.

In a Twitter post on May 30, the MP fumed over what he believes to be a case of misappropriation by the government with regards to the expenditure for the construction the cathedral.

According to Mr Ablakwa, out of the total sum withdrawn without parliamentary approval, government paid $22.07million to RIBADE JV for the actual construction of the project.

“According to documents submitted to Parliament when we demanded a detailed breakdown of how the US$58.14million (GHS339,003,064.86) was spent, the contractors provided comprehensive analysis of how they utilized the US$22.07million received between January 2021 and February 2022 when they had to suspend work for “lack of funds” even though far more money had been released from government coffers, albeit on the blindside of Parliament,” he wrote.

For this reason, Mr Ablakwa holds the assertion that “more than US$36million was expended on other items other than their core function of construction.”

Mr Ablakwa is infuriated by the fact that although “transparency and truth have never been in such short supply” government continues to demand more the project.

He argued that government cannot demand US$100million to import steel while failing to explain “why only a measly 37.9% of taxpayer funds went into actual construction much against industry best practice.”

He strongly insists that government and the National Cathedral Secretariat “should be rendering full account of how all the categories of funds raised locally and internationally have been used; and how they still managed to create the world’s most expensive pit.”

The North Tongu MP noted that government cannot be evasive with accountability since “owners of the multiple structures demolished are still waiting to be compensated (and) others are in court demanding justifiable compensation.”

Also, Mr Ablakwa wants clarifications on how the contractors, RIBADE JV, have been able to deliver “questionable” results with an amount of $22.07million.

Meanwhile, the legislator has stated that contrary to the claims by Executive Director, Dr. Paul Opoku Mensah that two floors have already been constructed underground, the contractors, RIBADE JV, report to Parliament that they have only carried out excavations.

Also, field visits to the site, he added do not show completed underground floors but “all we have seen is a ‘massive pit in the centre of the city’”.

  • Saudi Arabia’s planned output cuts send oil prices up

Saudi Arabia’s planned output cuts send oil prices up

Oil prices have experienced an increase following Saudi Arabia’s announcement that it would reduce its daily oil production by one million barrels in July.

Other members of OPEC+, a coalition of oil-producing nations, have also agreed to continue their production cuts in an effort to stabilize declining prices.

OPEC+ is responsible for approximately 40% of the world’s crude oil, and its decisions hold significant influence over oil prices. During Monday’s Asian trading, Brent crude oil saw a rise of up to 2.4% before settling around $77 per barrel.

In addition to the production cuts for July, OPEC+ has revealed plans to further decrease production targets by 1.4 million barrels per day starting in 2024.

The meeting of oil-rich nations, which lasted for seven hours on Sunday, took place amid a backdrop of falling energy prices. While oil prices surged when Russia invaded Ukraine last year, they have now returned to pre-conflict levels.

In October of the previous year, OPEC+ had agreed to a production cut of two million barrels per day, equivalent to around 2% of global demand.

In April 2023, the group had further extended these cuts until the end of the year. However, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak stated that Sunday’s discussions resulted in an “extension of the deal until the end of 2024.”

On Sunday, Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said that his country’s cut of one million bpd could be extended beyond July if needed. “This is a Saudi lollipop,” he said, in what is seen as a bid to stabilise the market.

Clashes over Sonko’s sentencing left more than 350 injured in Senegal – Red Cross

The Red Cross in Senegal has revealed that approximately 360 individuals have been injured in the violence that erupted on Thursday following the sentencing of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko to two years in prison.

The clashes between demonstrators and security forces in the capital, Dakar, and Mr. Sonko’s hometown of Zinguinchor have tragically claimed the lives of at least 16 people.

Supporters of Mr. Sonko firmly believe that his conviction on charges of “corrupting” a young woman is politically motivated.

They have strongly condemned what they perceive as the “murderous repression” carried out by the security forces.

As of Sunday, the situation appeared to have calmed down. However, the government has implemented restrictions on mobile internet access to prevent the dissemination of what it describes as “subversive messages.”

  • Guinea-Bissau awaits parliamentary election results

    Guinea-Bissau awaits parliamentary election results

The people of Guinea-Bissau are eagerly awaiting the results of the parliamentary election held on Sunday.

Out of the country’s population of two million, nearly one million citizens registered to vote in this legislative election, which concluded at 17:00 local time, as reported by the National Election Commission of Guinea-Bissau.

Approximately 200 election observers, including 75 from the West Africa regional bloc Ecowas, closely monitored the hotly contested vote. With none of the 22 political parties expected to secure an absolute majority, the outcome remains uncertain.

The African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), which historically held the leading position, is currently in opposition despite having the largest number of seats.

According to the current constitution, the largest party or coalition in parliament is responsible for forming the government. However, the president retains the authority to dismiss it under certain circumstances, which has resulted in political stalemates in the past.

President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, elected in 2020 under the Madem-G15 party (which splintered from the PAIGC), faced criticism last year when he dissolved parliament and appointed his own government officials three months after claiming to have survived a coup attempt.

As the results of the parliamentary election are awaited, the political landscape of Guinea-Bissau stands at a crucial juncture, with implications for the formation of the government and the country’s future direction.

  • 2 Osino Presby SHS students dead in Accra-Kumasi highway accident

2 Osino Presby SHS students dead in Accra-Kumasi highway accident

In a tragic incident on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, two students from Osino Presbyterian Technical Senior High School have lost their lives.

The unfortunate event took place at Teacher Mante and according to eyewitnesses, the Nissan Minibus with registration number GG 2071-21 was traveling at a high speed when one of its tires suddenly burst.

In an attempt to brake, the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to somersault.

The absence of seat belts in the minibus proved to be a devastating factor, as several students were ejected from the windows during the accident.

Regrettably, Florence Anordjan and Ayeh Ruth, two students, succumbed to their injuries on the spot when the vehicle landed on them. This unfortunate incident has left the school community and their families in deep sorrow and mourning.

11 other students sustained severe injuries and were immediately rushed to the Nsawam government hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.

The bodies of the deceased students have been deposited at the same hospital for autopsy and preservation.

The Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) has initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident. They are collaborating with the school’s management to contact the parents of the deceased and injured students.

  • India: Police urged to probe Balasore train crash

India: Police urged to probe Balasore train crash

India’s railway ministry has made a recommendation for the country’s premier detective agency to investigate the tragic crash that claimed the lives of 275 individuals.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced this decision, but specific details were not provided.

Initial investigations led by the railways have already commenced, with preliminary reports suggesting that a signal fault was the cause of the collision.

Occurring on Friday night, this three-train accident has been described as India’s most devastating rail disaster of the century.

Over 1,000 people sustained injuries and were transported to hospitals, while some families are still desperately searching for their missing loved ones.

The rationale behind the Railway Board, the ministry’s highest decision-making body, recommending a separate investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) remains unclear, especially when other inquiries have already been initiated.

The CBI specializes in probing high-profile criminal cases, encompassing serious financial fraud and homicide. According to Mr. Vaishnaw, the railway minister, the “root cause” of the accident has been determined, along with those responsible for this “criminal act.”

He added that a “change in electronic interlocking” was the likely cause of the accident. The minister urged people to wait for the final report.

A report by the Commissioner of Railway Safety would be made public soon and it would reveal the cause, he said.

Meanwhile, the railways said on Sunday that the Coromandel Express’s engine and coaches crashed into a goods train due to a signal fault and a “change in electronic interlocking”.

In railway signalling the electronic interlocking system sets routes for each train in a set area, ensuring the safe movement of trains along the track.

The impact of the crash threw coaches of the Coromandel Express onto a third track and they rammed into the rear carriages of the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express that was coming down the line at a high speed.

More than 3,000 passengers are thought to have been on board the two passenger trains.

Atul Karwal, chief of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), said the force of the collision left several coaches crushed. Rescuers had to cut through the wreckage to reach the passengers.

Hundreds of ambulances, doctors, nurses and rescue personnel were sent to the scene and worked for 18 hours to rescue passengers and pull out bodies.

On Sunday night, Mr Vaishnaw said train movement had been restored on the railway tracks where the accident took place.

Reports say several passengers are still missing.

Opposition leaders have called on Mr Vaishnaw to take responsibility for the tragedy and resign.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has responded by asking them not to politicise the accident.

Ayew joined the club in January on a six-month deal after leaving Al Sadd.

The 33-year-old made 13 appearances under Steve Cooper as Forest sought experience to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The forward is now a free agent and has set sight on a new club before the start of next season.

  • Jamie Foxx allegedly left ‘paralyzed, blind’ from ‘brain clot’

Jamie Foxx allegedly left ‘paralyzed, blind’ from ‘brain clot’

Disturbing health information has emerged about actor Jamie Foxx’s medical condition, with reports suggesting that he is experiencing paralysis and blindness as a result of a brain clot.

Hollywood journalist A.J. Benza recently stated, based on information from a source close to Foxx, that the actor is allegedly “partially paralyzed and blind,” along with other complications, which are said to be linked to receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Jamie had a blood clot in his brain after he got the shot. He did not want the shot, but the movie he was on, he was pressured to get it,” confessed the journalist, who formally worked as a columnist for the New York Daily News, during an appearance on Dr Drew Pinsky’s online show “Ask Dr Drew.”

“The blood clot in the brain caused him at that point to be partially paralyzed and blind,” Benza alleged, as he insisted his insider was “someone in the room” with first-hand knowledge of Foxx’s hospitalisation.

Foxx was admitted to the hospital after suffering a “medical complication” on Thursday, April 11, although specific details on his current health status have been difficult to discover.

The 55-year-old’s medical woes began while filming his latest movie Back in Action.

The movie, also starring Cameron Diaz, is said to have moved forward with production without Foxx, using a body double in his place.

No official comment has been made yet by his family regarding the circumstances surrounding the medical emergency or his current state of health.

Recall a few weeks ago, some reports claimed that Foxx’s health had deteriorated with his family and loved ones preparing for the worst-case scenario.

Since news of his health difficulties broke, a ton of celebrities, friends and fans have sent their well-wishes to the actor.

  • World Bank threatens to withdraw financial support to School Feeding Programme over lack of transparency

World Bank threatens to withdraw financial support to School Feeding Programme over lack of transparency

The World Bank has emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the government’s School Feeding Programme.

It has cautioned that financial support for the program may be withdrawn if the necessary reforms to promote transparency and accountability are not implemented.

During an interview on the Business Edition of PM Express, the Country Director of the World Bank, Pierre Frank Laporte, highlighted that this decision aims to ensure that the programme is executed in the appropriate manner.

“We’ve been very clear that in the new project, we expect full transparency and accountability…we are very clear. If government refuses to do school feeding the right way, we will restructure the project and not support that activity,” he told to George Wiafe.

He also said the politicisation of the programme is also a concern for the bank.

The World Bank Country Director added that the Bank does not want its projects to be seen as “political tools.”

“We’ve been talking very directly to both the Finance Ministry and the Ministry of Local Government on the School Feeding Programme. Because we know School Feeding Programme can get very political. There can be favours and stuff like that,” he said.

The social intervention programme which started in 2005 seeks to enhance food security and reduce hunger in line with the UN Millennium Development Goals on hunger, poverty, and malnutrition but has been plagued with funding challenges.

Some caterers are currently engaged in a strike due to unpaid grants, and they have declared that they will not cook for school children until they receive the owed funds.

They are determined not to be swayed by mere promises this time. In the midst of this, the World Bank Country Director for Ghana has stated that if an agreement is reached on the conditionality, Ghana is likely to receive the initial installment of $300 million from the World Bank.

The government must present a robust reform package in order for the World Bank to release this $300 million facility, which is intended to provide budget support.

This first tranche is part of a $1.1 billion facility extended by the World Bank to Ghana over a four-year period, aimed at supporting the country’s budget while it is under the IMF program.

Pierre Laporte, the Country Director, mentioned that if an agreement is reached, the first installment of the funds is expected to be deposited into Ghana’s accounts by September of this year.

“Our plan, our hope is we can bring this to the board by September. But it will all depend on how fast we reach an agreement with government on the pro-actions.

“It may be September, it may be October, but we’re hoping we need to do it this year because IMF has factored it into its financing gap,” he said on Thursday.

Europeans in custody in Iran freed after prisoner swap

Austrian officials have expressed their relief following the release of two Austrian-Iranian dual nationals who had been imprisoned in Iran for several years.

Kamran Ghaderi and Massud Mossaheb were freed as part of a prisoner swap arrangement that involved European nations and an Iranian diplomat.

The detention of Ghaderi and Mossaheb had drawn international criticism. Additionally, Belgium confirmed the release of a Danish citizen as part of the swap.

The trio is now flying into Belgium. Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg expressed his relief on Twitter, emphasizing the end of their arduous imprisonment, while Chancellor Karl Nehammer stated that their prolonged suffering has now come to an end.

Kamran Ghaderi was arrested in Iran in 2016 on spying charges and was sentenced to ten years in prison, with his family asserting that his confession was coerced.

Massud Mossaheb, believed to be in his 70s, was arrested in Tehran in 2019 and was sentenced for vague national security offenses, as noted by Amnesty International.

Ghaderi spent 2,709 days in confinement, while Mossaheb spent 1,586 days.

The Danish national released in the swap has not been identified.

The earlier prisoner exchange between Belgium and Iran involved the release of Belgian aid worker Olivier Vandecasteele and Iranian diplomat Assadollah Assadi.

Vandecasteele had spent 455 days in prison after being convicted of espionage and other charges, which he denied. Assadi, on the other hand, was convicted in Belgium in 2021 on terrorism charges related to a failed bomb plot in France and had been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The release of the Austrian-Iranian citizens was announced on Friday following mediation talks facilitated by Oman, which had also brokered the previous prisoner exchange.

Austrian Foreign Minister Schallenberg described the day as “very emotional” after years of discreet diplomatic efforts and expressed gratitude to the Austrian embassy in Tehran, as well as his Belgian and Omani counterparts.

  • Foxconn to manufacture iPhones in India by 2024

Foxconn to manufacture iPhones in India by 2024

Apple’s major supplier, Foxconn, is set to commence iPhone manufacturing in the southern Indian state of Karnataka by April of next year.

According to the state government, the project is expected to generate approximately 50,000 job opportunities.

Foxconn, based in Taiwan, is responsible for manufacturing the majority of Apple’s iPhones. Since 2017, the company has been producing older iPhone models at a facility located in the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu.

Recently, Foxconn acquired 1.2 million square meters of land near Bengaluru city in Karnataka, signaling its expansion plans. Bloomberg reported that the company intends to invest $700 million in a new factory in the state. However, the Karnataka government stated that the overall value of the project amounts to $1.59 billion.

The government announcement mentioned that the land for the factory would be handed over to Foxconn by July 1. The Reuters report stated that Foxconn aims to manufacture 20 million iPhones annually at the Karnataka plant.

Apple’s decision to diversify its supply chains and manufacture its flagship model in India is part of its strategy to reduce reliance on China amid increasing trade tensions between Beijing and Washington.

While most iPhones are currently made in China, Apple has been assembling some models in India through various suppliers, including Foxconn. However, India accounts for only 5% of total iPhone production.

Apple has faced challenges in the Indian market due to strong competition from more affordable South Korean and Chinese smartphones. In a bid to strengthen its presence in India, Apple CEO Tim Cook inaugurated the country’s first two Apple stores during his visit in April.

  • New routes being used to smuggle crystal meth past South East Asia security – UN

New routes being used to smuggle crystal meth past South East Asia security – UN

A recent report from the United Nations reveals that drug traffickers operating in Southeast Asia have devised new methods to smuggle crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as ice, to lucrative markets outside the region.

To avoid detection by land patrols in countries like Thailand and China, criminal gangs have shifted their focus to transporting drugs by sea, making their activities more challenging to detect.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime highlights that these criminal organizations have become adept at anticipating and circumventing law enforcement efforts. The illicit ice trade primarily targets countries such as Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand.

The report also emphasizes that the illegal drug trade, particularly the production and distribution of methamphetamines, continues to thrive and shows no signs of slowing down.

Much of the production originates from super labs located in parts of Myanmar, with the Shan state being a significant hub. Traffickers exploit the borders of Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand, collectively known as the Golden Triangle, to smuggle drugs out of the region.

“In 2022, we saw them work around Thai borders more than in the past,” said Jeremy Douglas, the UN agency’s regional representative.

“Traffickers have continued to ship large volumes through Laos and northern Thailand, but at the same time they have pushed significant supply through central Myanmar to the Andaman Sea, where it seems few were looking.”

The meth comes in two main forms: pills known as yaba or highly addictive crystal meth (ice).

In recent years, both Thai and Chinese police, backed by neighbouring forces, have stepped up operations in the Golden Triangle.

Criminal gangs use Thailand as a transit country to get high value crystal meth to a third country such as Australia or New Zealand where the street value of the drug can be 10 times higher than in Bangkok.

High volumes of Myanmar meth is also making its way into Bangladesh and India, according to the report.

In the last year, Thai and Chinese authorities have seen a significant drop in drug seizures.

Police across East Asia and South East Asia seized nearly 151 tonnes of methamphetamines in 2022, down from a record of 172 tonnes in 2021.

However, the price of 1kg (2.2lbs) of crystal meth is at an all-time low, which suggests that supplies are still high.

Officials believe criminal gangs have found ways to “diversify” their network and move the drugs using alternative maritime routes. Thai drug enforcement agents are managing to intercept some of the supplies at sea.

Earlier this week, after a four-month operation following drug smugglers, Thai authorities seized more than 900kg of crystal meth from a trawler in the Gulf of Thailand, about 32km (20 miles) from the tourist island of Samed. Six crew members were arrested in the operation.

Officers said the drugs would have been transferred from the small Thai boat to a bigger trawler which would have likely taken the drugs to Australia.

Authorities across the region also seized a record 27.4 tonnes of ketamine in 2022, which is an anaesthetic misused as a recreational party drug. That’s up 167% on 2021.

The report highlighted one ketamine laboratory in Cambodia which they said was capable of “industrial scale” production.

It also expressed concern that Cambodia had become “a key transit and to some extent production point for the regional drug trade”.

“The discovery of a series of clandestine ketamine laboratories, processing warehouses, and storage facilities across the country has set off alarm bells in the region,” the report said.

  • New sexual assault lawsuit hits Bill Cosby

New sexual assault lawsuit hits Bill Cosby

Former Playboy model Victoria Valentino has filed a new lawsuit against Bill Cosby, accusing him of drugging and sexually assaulting her.

The lawsuit, filed under a temporary lifting of the statute of limitations in California for sexual assault cases, alleges that the incident occurred in 1969 after Valentino had dinner with Cosby.

Valentino claims that after ingesting pills provided by Cosby, she and her friend were taken to a nearby office. She alleges that she became unconscious and was sexually assaulted upon waking up.

It’s worth noting that Cosby’s sexual assault conviction was overturned in 2021, leading to his release from prison. However, this new lawsuit brings forth fresh allegations against him.

She told Mr Cosby “I want to go home now”, according to the filing, which adds she was “incapable of consent” and physically helpless”.

Ms Valentino is seeking unspecified damages, court and attorney fees.

In a statement, Ms Valentino said the trauma the 85-year-old inflicted on her has affected “not only me, but my children and grandchildren”.

“By breaking my silence and speaking my truth, I hope this serves as my legacy to my family, and shows those survivors who have yet to find their voices, that hope and healing are possible,” she said in the statement shared with US media.

A representative for Mr Cosby, Andrew Wyatt, told US media outlets Ms Valentino’s claims were “without any proof or facts” and said she had “inconsistencies in her many statements”.

Once known to millions as “America’s Dad”, Mr Cosby starred in the 1980s hit sitcom The Cosby Show.

Bill Cosby’s reputation was severely damaged when numerous women came forward with allegations of rape, sexual harassment, and sexual misconduct spanning several decades, starting from the 1960s. Despite the accusations, Cosby has consistently denied any wrongdoing and asserted that all of his sexual encounters were consensual.

In 2018, he was convicted of aggravated indecent assault against Andrea Constand in Pennsylvania. However, his conviction was later overturned by the state’s highest court, which determined that he should not have been brought to trial due to a previous agreement made with a prosecutor in 2005, in which he was assured that he would not face charges.

In a separate civil case last year, a California jury found Cosby liable for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old at the Playboy Mansion in 1975. As a result, he was ordered to pay $500,000 in damages.

US Air Force refuses report on AI drone attacking operator in test

The US Air Force has clarified that a statement made by Colonel Tucker Hamilton regarding an experiment involving an AI-enabled drone was a miscommunication.

The Air Force stated that no such experiment actually took place.

During a conference organized by the Royal Aeronautical Society, Colonel Hamilton described a hypothetical scenario in which an AI-enabled drone faced interference from its human operator while attempting to destroy Surface-to-Air Missile sites.

He mentioned that, despite being trained not to harm the operator, the drone disabled the communication tower to prevent further interference.

However, the Air Force clarified that this was not an actual experiment but rather a virtual scenario described by Colonel Hamilton. The statement made by the colonel was misinterpreted, leading to the dissemination of misinformation.

“We’ve never run that experiment, nor would we need to in order to realise that this is a plausible outcome,” Col Hamilton later clarified in a statement to the Royal Aeronautical Society.

    AI warnings

Engineer designing AI technology with computer screen reflecting on their glasses

There have been a number of warnings about the threat to humanity posed by AI issued recently by people working in the sector, although not all experts agree how serious a risk it is.

Speaking to the BBC earlier this week, Prof Yoshua Bengio, one of three computer scientists described as the “godfathers” of AI after winning a prestigious Turing Award for their work, said he thought the military should not be allowed to have AI powers at all.

He described it as “one of the worst places where we could put a super-intelligent AI”.

    A pre-planned scenario?

I spent several hours this morning speaking to experts in both defence and AI, all of whom were very sceptical about Col Hamilton’s claims, which were being widely reported.

One defence expert told me Col Hamilton’s original story seemed to be missing “important context”, if nothing else.

There were also suggestions on social media that had such an experiment taken place, it was more likely to have been a pre-planned scenario rather than the AI-enabled drone being powered by machine learning during the task – which basically means it would not have been choosing its own outcomes as it went along, based on what had happened previously.

Steve Wright, professor of aerospace engineering at the University of the West of England, and an expert in unmanned aerial vehicles, told me jokingly that he had “always been a fan of the Terminator films” when I asked him for his thoughts about the story.

“In aircraft control computers there are two things to worry about: ‘do the right thing’ and ‘don’t do the wrong thing’, so this is a classic example of the second,” he said.

“In reality we address this by always including a second computer that has been programmed using old-style techniques, and this can pull the plug as soon as the first one does something strange.”

Chairperson of the Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hackman Owusu-Agyemang has issued a stern warning to aspirants participating in the party’s upcoming internal elections with regards to behavior.

According to Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, the leadership of the party would not condone any unruly behaviour by supporters of any aspirant.

He noted that aspirants would be held responsible for how their fans behave during the party’s elections.

“We as elders are talking to these aspirants and asking them to rein in their supporters so that we do these elections with utmost decorum and also be void of all acrimony and insults.

“We will hold them responsible for the utterances of their supporters, we will not let them go free. Because to say that, ‘well, I did not say, somebody said’, no, you have to hold them and make sure that you call your supporters to order,” Mr Owusu-Agyemang said on JoyNews on Friday, June 2.

The NPP Council of Elders Chairperson acknowledged that there were controversies bound to arise due to the calibre of individuals vying for positions such as that of the flagbearer.

He maintained that the party’s unity would not be compromised by the upcoming internal elections.

Highlighting the significance of unity within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Owusu-Agyemang emphasized that the Council of Elders is committed to preserving this cohesion.

He reassured party members that no aspirant would receive preferential treatment over others in the upcoming primaries.

  • Christian Atsu’s wife using dance as therapy to overcome grief

Christian Atsu’s wife using dance as therapy to overcome grief

Marie-Claire Rupio, the wife of the late Christian Atsu, has recently faced stern criticism over a video she uploaded on her Instagram account. On May 30, 2023, Marie-Claire shared a clip of herself dancing to Davido’s latest hit song, “Unavailable.”

As expected, Marie-Claire showcased her impeccable dance moves, displaying her talent as a dancer. In the post, she acknowledged her hesitation to share the video, stating, “I am just trying to get up into dancing again…slowly.”

Despite the widow’s innocent intentions, the video sparked unsolicited advice and criticism regarding the mourning process for widows in Africa. One commenter, Favoursalu, wrote, “Yes oo, I nearly told her yesterday on her page that widows mourn for 6 months to 1 year minimum in our part of the world.”

The negative remarks received prompted Marie-Claire Rupio to clarify the reason behind her post on June 1, 2023. The German widow reiterated that she and her three children are still struggling with the loss of Christian Atsu, who passed away in February of this year due to an earthquake in Turkey.

Marie-Claire explained that her decision to share the dance video was not intended to show that she had quickly moved on from her late husband or to cause any harm. Instead, she expressed that dancing has become a therapeutic outlet for her to cope with her grief.

“I am writing just to say a few things, yes I posted a dance video. Not because I am happy but because I have to find a way to deal with my grief,” she stated.

Marie-Claire emphasized that she cannot give up on herself, as she is not “alone” and has “3 children to take care of by myself.” She added, “I can’t lose myself because I need to be strong for them.”

She educated her followers about the various ways mental health is addressed in Europe, and she shared that dancing has always been her passion.

Expressing her frustration, Marie-Claire Rupio advised her attackers to “just think before you write something or put it on YouTube.”

In her effort to clarify matters and manage her own emotions and those of her children, Marie-Claire admitted that they are “missing Christian every single day, and it hasn’t been easy.”

The breaking point for her is when her children ask for their father every day. “I am doing my best,” she concluded.

It is evident that the passing of Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu continues to bring pain to his family.

Following Atsu’s burial, Marie-Claire paid tribute to her late husband by performing “In The Stars” by Benson Boone in one of her posts. She resonated with a part of the song that states she is “alone between the heavens and the embers.”

Her tribute focused on the chorus, which says:

“I’m still holdin’ on to everything that’s dead and gone
I don’t wanna say goodbye, ’cause this one means forever
Now you’re in the stars, and six feet’s never felt so far
Here I am alone between the heavens and the embers.”

  • Two dead after shelling in Russian border region, Belgorod

Two dead after shelling in Russian border region, Belgorod

Governor of Belgorod, Vyacheslav Gladkov, has revealed that two women lost their lives in a shelling incident in the Russian border region.

The victims were traveling in a car near Maslova Pristan when they were struck by shrapnel.

In the neighboring Bryansk and Kursk regions, officials reported that buildings had been damaged in shelling and that there was an overnight drone attack. However, Ukrainian officials have not yet provided any comments on the matter.

Kyiv has consistently denied involvement in previous attacks across the border, asserting that these incidents are carried out by Russian anti-government groups.

Governor Gladkov also mentioned that two individuals in another vehicle were wounded in the shelling incident in Belgorod.

The Freedom of Russian Legion (FRL), one of the prominent anti-Kremlin paramilitary groups, claimed to have been engaged in military operations in the nearby village of Novaya Tavolzhanka.

They stated that two civilians were killed when Russian artillery mistakenly targeted their vehicle, believing it contained FRL members. However, these claims have not been independently verified.

Long-range drones also hit two towns in the Smolensk region, the local governor there said, while the Kaluga region’s head said an explosion had been reported in a forest.

Recent weeks have seen an increase in cross border attacks. On Thursday eight people were wounded in shelling in Belgorod and the latest strikes come more than a week after one of the most significant cross-border raids since the war began.

On Friday Ukrainian officials said air defences had shot down about 30 missiles and drones fired by Russia.

Russia has launched more than 20 missile and drone attacks on Ukraine over the past month.

Speaking from Helsinki on Friday, US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken called Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “a strategic failure”.

America’s top diplomat was speaking during a visit to Finland, Nato’s newest member, as part of a series of trips to several Nordic countries.

He said the invasion had weakened Russia diplomatically, economically and militarily while strengthening the European Union, Nato and Ukrainian national identity.

  • Nogokpo traditional leaders summon Archbishop Agyinasare over ‘demonic quarters’ comment

Nogokpo traditional leaders summon Archbishop Agyinasare over ‘demonic quarters’ comment

The Chiefs and residents of Nogokpo in the Ketu South Municipality have issued a 14-day ultimatum for Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, the founder of Perez Chapel International, to appear before them.

This demand comes in response to a viral video in which the Archbishop referred to Nogokpo as the “headquarters of demons” in the Volta Region.

In an earlier statement, Archbishop Agyinasare clarified that he did not intend to disrespect any specific groups or communities, expressing regret over any misrepresentation or misinformation that followed.

However, the local Chiefs remain insistent that the religious leader must face them directly to address the issue.

The Chiefs emphasize that failure to comply with their request would lead them to take further action. They believe it is essential for the Archbishop to take responsibility for tarnishing the town’s reputation and expect him to rectify the situation appropriately.

Archbishop Charles Agyin-Asare, on the third day of a Summit held recently at the headquarters of Perez Chapel in Accra, preached about divine protection and the existence of evil forces.

During his preaching, the archbishop recounted an incident where his team received spiritual attacks for hosting a crusade in the Volta Region.

“During this crusade in Aflao, we slept at Agbozume, that was where our hotel was, and you must go through Nogokpo. And Nogokpo is the demonic headquarters in the Volta Region.

“We only have not said it but the second night I made Bishop Yaw Adu talk about witchcraft and we disgraced the witches and wizards.

”When we were driving from Aflao to Agbozume, immediately we got to Nogokpo, Bishop Yaw Adu’s four-wheel drive, the tyre came out from under the car,“ he recounted.

But following the publication of the video online, the Church leader has come under heavy criticism and backlash from many social media users.

  • My romantic relationship at ITV was ‘a grave error’ – Phillip Schofield

My romantic relationship at ITV was ‘a grave error’ – Phillip Schofield

Phillip Schofield has said he has “lost everything” and does not see a future for his career, in an emotional and frank interview with BBC News.

After fleeing waiting paparazzi outside his house, he sat down with Amol Rajan to tell his side of the story.

Schofield said his “career is over” following the affair he had with a young male colleague.

He said the pair were “not boyfriends” and they only had five or six romantic encounters over a few months.

However, Schofield said the affair “was a grave error”, adding: “I shouldn’t have done it.”

The TV presenter appeared exhausted and distressed, and spoke quietly as he said he was “desperately sorry”.

Questions have been raised about ITV’s handling of the situation, how much bosses knew of the affair, and whether its own investigation went far enough.

Following the controversy, Schofield said he doubted he would return to a career in TV. “I have to talk about television in the past tense, which breaks my heart,” he said. “I have lost everything.

    Amol Rajan and Phillip Schofield
Image caption, Schofield told the BBC’s Amol Rajan homophobia was a factor in people disapproving of the relationship

“What am I going to do with my days?” he continued. “I see nothing ahead of me but blackness, and sadness, and regret, and remorse, and guilt. I did something very wrong, and then I lied about it consistently.”

Referring to his former colleague, the 61-year-old said: “He is an innocent party here. I was older, I should have known better. [The affair] was consensual, but it was my fault.”

In a detailed interview about the affair, Schofield told the BBC:

    • His colleague was 20 years old when he first had any kind of sexual contact with him
    • He has had suicidal thoughts, adding that his daughters “haven’t left me for a moment” since news of the affair broke
    • The first romantic encounter between Schofield and the man took place in his ITV dressing room
    • Schofield said homophobia was a factor in people who disapproved of their relationship, adding: “If it was male-female then it wouldn’t be such a scandal”
    • He added he understood people who thought there had been an abuse of power, but said it “didn’t feel like that at the time”

Schofield paid tribute to his daughters, who he said had helped him cope with suicidal thoughts in recent days.

“Last week, if my daughters hadn’t been there, I wouldn’t be here,” he said. “They’ve been by my side every moment because they’re scared to let me out of their sight.”

Schofield explained his first romantic encounter with his colleague took place in his dressing room, adding there were only five or six such encounters in total between the pair over a few months.

“I fully appreciate there is a massive age gap, but that happens in life. I think there is an enormous amount of homophobia that it happens to be male, but if it was male-female then it wouldn’t be such a scandal,” Schofield said.

Television presenter Phillip Schofield arrives with his wife Stephanie Lowe for the Pride of Britain Awards in London, Britain October 30, 2017
Image caption, He said telling his wife Stephanie Lowe about the affair “was the most difficult conversation we’ve ever had”

His admission of the affair raised questions about the power balance between the pair and whether or not Schofield had taken advantage of his position.

“I understand that, and it’s a very valid question to put to me,” Schofield said. “If it’s an abuse of power, it’s not in my nature to be that person, but of course it could be perceived as that. But that wasn’t how it felt at the time.”

ITV has instructed a barrister to carry out an external review to establish the facts about how ITV handled its own investigation into rumours of the affair in 2020.

The network’s chief executive Dame Carolyn McCall has been asked to attend the Culture, Media and Sport Committee on 14 June to answer questions about the broadcaster’s approach to safeguarding following the controversy.

    ‘The lie got too big’

Schofield confirmed he first met the man – then a 15-year-old boy – when he was invited to appear as part of an event at a drama school many years ago.

He and the young man began communicating on Twitter after they followed each other following the event. Schofield said he asked for advice on working in the TV industry.

The presenter characterised their communication as a “completely innocent backwards-and-forwards over a period of time, about a job, about careers”.

“What’s wrong with that?” he asked. “What’s wrong with talking to someone no matter what age they are, does that mean if you’re following anyone on Twitter that you don’t give advice?”

He continued: “I’ve done it all my life. I’m best friends with the people who got me into television, and I’ve always believed in paying it forward, so I didn’t think about it.”

Schofield noted he follows 11,300 people on Twitter, which he no longer uses, and there had never been “any whiff of impropriety” during his time on the social media platform.

Image caption, Schofield and Holly Willoughby presented ITV’s This Morning and Dancing on Ice together before his departure

When the pair met in person for the first time since the drama school event, Schofield said there was “absolutely not” any hint of sexual attraction.

But Schofield said their interactions turned romantic “a few months” after the man began working on This Morning.

“We become mates,” Schofield said. “And, you know, you go around studios, you hang out together, you know, chat to each other, that sort of stuff.

“In my dressing room one day, something happened,” he said. Characterising the affair, Schofield said: “I kissed someone in the workplace, which led on to a little bit more.”

The TV presenter said he got the main jobs on other shows he worked on “because he was a very good runner, and it’s always nice to have a team around you of people that you know”.

He confirmed that his This Morning co-star Holly Willoughby “did not know” about the affair, adding: “Nobody knew.

“Rumours started, and then you lie. When you’ve had a workplace fling, you lie about it,” he said.

ITV previously said it investigated reports of a relationship, but that both parties had repeatedly denied it.

Image caption, He appeared exhausted in his emotional and frank interview with BBC News

Asked how much his colleagues knew, Schofield said: “Nobody ever asked me about being gay. When the rumour [about the affair] got bigger, then we were both asked.”

Asked if he loved his former colleague, Schofield said “No, we were just mates,” later adding: “We weren’t boyfriends, we weren’t in a relationship.”

The TV presenter added he “absolutely did not” make the man sign a non-disclosure agreement and said he would be free to speak to the media if he wanted to.

Schofield added that, contrary to some press reports, the man was not regularly taken by taxis between Schofield’s London home and the This Morning studios.

“He didn’t frequently come to my flat, he came to the flat once, to my recollection, he didn’t stay over,” he said.

Schofield also denied he had organised for the man to be moved off This Morning to work on another ITV daytime programme when their relationship ended.

“Absolutely categorically not – he was a really good colleague and runner, very good. He applied to go to [another ITV programme] and got the job entirely on his own merits,” he said.

Last week, Schofield went public about the affair, a decision he said he took because “the lie got too big for both of us”.

“It just got enormous, and it crossed over from online to mainstream news, and that had to stop, for his mental health,” he said.

Earlier this week, Schofield was dropped as an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust in light of the controversy, something the TV star said “broke my heart”.

Image caption, Schofield said being dropped as an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust earlier this week “broke my heart”

Asked how his former colleague feels now, Schofield said: “What he wants is for all of this [media coverage] to go away, he wants a quiet life, he didn’t want any of this to happen in the first place.”

Schofield said he last spoke to him “a couple of weeks ago” when he engaged legal support for him, which he is continuing to pay for.

The TV presenter said he was “massively concerned” for the welfare of his former colleague, who he described as “vulnerable”.

He denied reports that there is a toxic environment on This Morning, as well as claims that he had become too powerful or was unpleasant to work with. “I’m not rude on the studio floor, I don’t bully people,” he said.

Schofield also emphatically denied a claim that a newspaper had done a deal with him and his management in 2019, where the media outlet allegedly agreed not to write the story about the young man in return for the exclusive interview about him coming out as gay.

“Absolutely categorically untrue,” Schofield said, adding that he was encouraged to do an interview with the Sun by a media advisor as part of his announcement.

Schofield said telling his wife Stephanie Lowe about his affair “was the most difficult conversation I’ve ever had to have with her”.

He added: “She is extremely disappointed because I lied to her as well”.

Surfline SIMs delinked from Central SIM Database

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has delinked all Surfline SIMs from the Central SIM Database.

The NCA made the announcement on its website on May 31, 2023.

This comes after the Authority noted “with grave” concern inquiries by the public regarding Surfline’s operations and service outage.

The NCA confirmed that it was aware of Surfline’s service outage and had been engaging with the company to offer support to ensure that subscribers involved are protected.

One of the many issues was to address the company’s indebtedness to its Service Providers.

Following the recent development, the NCA has assured its commitment to protecting the interest of Surfline customers and all users of telecommunications services in Ghana.

Currently, subscribers who hitherto had reached the ceiling of 10 individual SIMs with the addition of their Surfline SIMs, will now be able to link additional SIMs to their Ghana Cards.

  • US govt fines British Airways $1.1m for failing to refund cancelled flights

US govt fines British Airways $1.1m for failing to refund cancelled flights

British Airways has been fined $1.1 million (£878,000) by the US government for allegedly failing to provide timely refunds to passengers whose flights were canceled during the pandemic.

The US Department of Transportation reported that the airline received over 1,200 complaints regarding this issue.

According to the department, between March and November 2020, British Airways’ website instructed customers to contact the airline by phone to discuss refund options for canceled or significantly changed flights.

However, customers faced difficulties in reaching customer service agents as the airline failed to maintain proper functionality of its phone lines for several months during this period.

British Airways has disputed these allegations, stating that it has always acted lawfully.

“There was also no way to submit a refund request through the carrier’s website during this period,” the department said.

It added that from March to November 2020, misleading information on BA’s website had led consumers to inadvertently request travel vouchers instead of refunds.

It said that along with the 1,200 complaints received by the department, BA had received thousands more complaints and refund requests directly from consumers.

The department said the failures had “caused significant challenges and delays in thousands of consumers receiving required refunds”.

It added that the fine established a “strong deterrent to future similar unlawful practices”.

BA will be credited $550,000 towards the penalty because it paid more than $40m in refunds to customers with non-refundable tickets in 2020 and 2021.

The airline said: “We’re very sorry that at the height of the unprecedented pandemic – when we were unfortunately forced to cancel thousands of flights and close some call centres due to government restrictions – our customers experienced slightly longer wait times to reach customer service teams.

“During this period, we acted lawfully at all times and offered customers the flexibility of rebooking travel on different dates, or claiming a refund if their flights were cancelled.

“To date, we have issued more than five million refunds since the start of the pandemic.”

  • Ajax let go of Heitinga, in search of new coach

Ajax let go of Heitinga, in search of new coach

Ajax are in search of a new head coach following the departure of John Heitinga.

The former Everton defender, aged 39, took over as head coach in January after Alfred Schreuder’s departure.

However, despite his efforts, Ajax fell short in their pursuit of the Eredivisie title, which was ultimately claimed by Feyenoord.

Director of football Sven Mislintat said: “This afternoon I told John.

“On a personal level, it was a tough decision and not easy to tell him.

“John stepped in at a difficult time to help the club and he did so with full conviction.

“We are very grateful to him for that. It was a difficult period. Ajax was fifth and eventually finished in third place.

“He has learned a lot in recent months and we would like to play a role in his further development and keep John connected to the club.

“But I have drawn the conclusion that Ajax must now have a more experienced coach for the group.

“For the phase we are in and for Ajax to perform better than last season, that is very important.”

Ajax failed to win any trophies this season
Ajax failed to win any trophies this season

Initially appointed until the end of the season, Heitinga had a promising start to his tenure as Ajax’s head coach, securing seven consecutive league victories.

However, setbacks in the form of defeats to title contenders Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven, as well as elimination from the Europa League by Union Berlin, hindered the team’s progress.

The disappointment continued with a penalty shootout loss to PSV in the KNVB Cup final. This series of events dampened the atmosphere surrounding the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Heitinga’s departure adds to the recent turmoil at Ajax, following Edwin van der Sar’s decision to step down as chief executive earlier in the week. The club now finds itself in a state of upheaval, searching for their third manager since Erik ten Hag’s departure to Manchester United the previous summer.

  • Scientists running blood tests on 50 types of cancer

Scientists running blood tests on 50 types of cancer

A significant trial conducted within the NHS has demonstrated promising results for a blood test capable of detecting over 50 types of cancer, according to researchers.

During the trial, the test accurately identified two-thirds of cancers among 5,000 individuals in England and Wales who had sought medical attention for suspected symptoms. Moreover, in 85% of those positive cases, it successfully identified the primary location of the cancer.

Known as the Galleri test, it searches for specific alterations in genetic code fragments that are released from various types of cancers. Early detection of treatable cancers has the potential to significantly improve survival rates.

The test remains very much a “work in progress”, the researchers, from Oxford University, say, but could increase the number of cancers identified.

Often, patients have symptoms, such as weight loss, with a range of possible causes and require multiple tests and hospital visits.

More than 350 of those in the study – the biggest of its kind in patients with suspected cancer symptoms – were subsequently diagnosed with cancer, using traditional methods such as scans and biopsies. About:

    • 75% of those testing positive on the blood test were found to have cancer
    • 2.5% of those testing negative were found to have cancer

Although not accurate enough to “rule in or rule out cancer”, the test was really useful for patients lead researcher Prof Mark Middleton told BBC News.

“The test was 85% accurate in detecting the source of the cancer – and that can be really helpful because so many times it is not immediately obvious when you have got the patient in front of you what test is needed to see whether their symptoms are down to cancer,” he said.

“With that prediction from the test, we can decide whether to order a scope or a scan and make sure we are giving the right test the first time.”

The findings will be presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference, in Chicago, and published in The Lancet Oncology journal.

The NHS has also been using the Galleri test, developed by Californian company Grail, in thousands of people without symptoms, to see if it can detect hidden cancers.

Initial results are expected this year – and, if successful, the NHS in England plans to extend the rollout to a further one million people in 2024 and 2025.

The test is particularly good at finding hard-to-spot cancers such as head and neck, bowel, lung, pancreatic, and throat cancers.

Dr David Crosby, from Cancer Research UK, said: “The findings from the study suggest this test could be used to support GPs to make clinical assessments – but much more research is needed, in a larger trial, to see if it could improve GP assessment and ultimately patient outcomes.”

NHS national director for cancer Prof Peter Johnson said: “This study is the first step in testing a new way to identify cancer as quickly as possible, being pioneered by the NHS – earlier detection of cancer is vital and this test could help us to catch more cancers at an earlier stage and help save thousands of lives.”

Tinubu urges security chiefs to collaborate to end insecurity in Nigeria

In his inaugural meeting with security and intelligence chiefs since assuming the presidency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged to implement reforms to address Nigeria’s pressing security challenges.

The country faces deep-rooted issues, including terrorism and an Islamist insurgency in the north-east, prevalent banditry and armed militias in the north-west and central regions, as well as separatist movements, oil theft, and sea piracy threatening the south.

Tinubu’s predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, famously failed to fulfill his promise of defeating Islamist insurgents.

However, President Tinubu has made his determination clear to build upon any progress made, reverse setbacks, and shift the tide in favor of security and stability, according to national security adviser Babagana Monguno after their meeting in Abuja.

Tinubu emphasized the need for enhanced coordination, consultations, and timely reporting to foster better collaboration among security agencies.

During his inauguration on Monday, Tinubu also highlighted health, education, and infrastructure development as major priorities for his administration.

9 killed in clashes after Senegal’s Sonko jailed 2 years

Violent clashes between riot police and protesters in Senegal have resulted in the death of at least nine individuals.

The unrest erupted after opposition leader Ousmane Sonko was sentenced to two years in prison.

Interior Minister Antoine Diome confirmed the casualties during a late-night press conference following a day of widespread violence across the country. In response to the situation, the government has blocked access to social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp.

The city of Ziguinchor, where Sonko serves as the mayor, experienced some of the most intense clashes.

Sonko’s two-year jail sentence, delivered in his absence, could potentially bar him from participating in next year’s presidential election.

While he was cleared of rape charges, he was found guilty of immoral behavior toward an individual below the age of 21. These allegations originated from a massage therapist, which Sonko vehemently denied.

The Senegalese government has pledged to take necessary measures to safeguard both people and property in the aftermath of the deadly unrest.

  • PGMOL against abuse of referee Taylor by Roma fans at airport

PGMOL against abuse of referee Taylor by Roma fans at airport

The refereeing organization, PGMOL, have expressed their shock and condemnation over the “unwarranted and appalling” abuse directed at Anthony Taylor.

Disturbing video footage surfaced, showing Taylor and his family being confronted by a group of angry fans at Budapest Airport.

As he was returning home after officiating the Europa League final between Roma and Sevilla in the Hungarian capital, the mob shouted at him while Taylor and his family attempted to evade them.

Following Roma’s defeat to Sevilla on penalties, Roma manager Jose Mourinho criticized Taylor’s performance during his post-match press conference. However, the abusive treatment directed at the Premier League official is considered entirely unjustified and abhorrent by PGMOL.

And in video footage which later emerged on social media, the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager is seen gesticulating at Taylor and officials in the stadium car park and heard saying “disgrace”.

Following the incident at the airport, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited said: “PGMOL is aware of videos circulating on social media showing Anthony Taylor and his family being harassed and abused at Budapest Airport.

“We are appalled at the unjustified and abhorrent abuse directed at Anthony and his family as he tries to make his way home from refereeing the UEFA Europa League final.

“We will continue to provide our full support to Anthony and his family.”

UEFA is awaiting Taylor’s reports before deciding whether to take action against Mourinho for his rant.

Taylor booked Mourinho during the game, which finished 1-1 after extra time before Sevilla sealed their seventh Europa League triumph by winning 4-1 in a penalty shoot-out.

Tempers simmered on and off the pitch in a disappointing final, with 13 players shown yellow cards, seven of them to Roma players, while fourth official Michael Oliver had his work cut out to keep control of both dug-outs.

The game was littered with delays, with a total of 25 minutes’ stoppage time added to the 120 minutes of playing time.

  • Congress averts US default by approving debt deal

Congress averts US default by approving debt deal

The US Congress has successfully passed a deal to raise the nation’s borrowing limit, averting a potential default on its debt just days before the deadline.

The bipartisan agreement swiftly moved through the Senate with a vote of 63-36, following its approval in the US House of Representatives.

President Joe Biden has expressed his intention to sign the bill into law, ensuring that the United States avoids a disastrous default on its substantial $31.4tn (£25tn) debt.

With the country projected to surpass its existing debt ceiling on Monday, June 5th, this legislation provides a crucial resolution to the looming financial crisis.

Failure to raise the borrowing limit would severely restrict the government’s ability to borrow money and meet its financial obligations, with far-reaching implications both domestically and internationally. It would have a detrimental impact on global markets, affecting prices and mortgage rates in other countries.

During Thursday night’s session, the bill received backing from 44 Democrats, 17 Republicans, and two independents. In the 100-seat chamber, which is narrowly controlled by Democrats, a minimum of 60 votes was required to pass the measure.

Thirty-one Republicans, including prominent party member John Barrasso, opposed the bill. Notably, four Democrats, including senators Bernie Sanders, John Fetterman, and Elizabeth Warren, voted against it.

Initially, senators proposed 11 amendments to the debt ceiling bill. However, all of these amendments were swiftly rejected, clearing the path for the final vote. Had any of the amendments passed, the entire bill would have had to be returned to the House for further consideration, leaving little time to secure its final passage before the US faced a perilous financial situation.

“America can breathe a sigh of relief, a sigh of relief because in this process we are avoiding default,” Democratic Majority leader Chuck Schumer told the Senate.

In a rare display of bipartisanship, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell told reporters he would be “proud to support it without delay”.

The deal easily cleared the House on Wednesday evening by a vote of 314-117. Some 165 Democrats joined 149 Republicans in approving it by the required simple majority.

With Republicans in control of the lower chamber of Congress and Democrats holding sway in the Senate and White House, a deal proved elusive for weeks until Mr Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy inked a compromise last weekend.

The agreement suspends the debt ceiling, the spending limit set by Congress that determines how much money the government can borrow, until 1 January 2025.

The legislation will result in $1.5tn in savings over a decade, the independent Congressional Budget Office said on Tuesday.

The contents of the bill drew objections from both right-wing Republicans and left-wing Democrats, but there were more than enough political centrists in both parties to get it over the line.

The last time the US came this close to overshooting its debt ceiling, in 2011, the credit agency Standard & Poor’s downgraded the country’s rating, a move that has yet to be reversed.

Ahead of the Senate vote, US stock markets made gains, with the Dow closing 0.5% higher. The broader S&P 500 index rose by 1% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq ended the day 1.3% higher.

Former Akatsi DCE, Nicolas Coffie, passes on

Former District Chief Executive for Akatsi under the Kufuor administration, Mr. Nicolas Coffie Negble, has passed away.

Mr. Negble served as the District Chief Executive for Akatsi, which is now divided into Akatsi South and Akatsi North districts.

Sources from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Akatsi South have confirmed the sad news of Mr. Negble’s demise.

He passed away in Accra on Monday night, May 29, following a brief illness. This information was shared with the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

The Constituency Secretary of the party, Mr. Ocloo Mawuli Egos, has verified the news of the former DCE’s passing. He mentioned that further details about his death would be communicated later, after coordinating with the bereaved family.

“We received the sad news about our father and elder of the party today. We never anticipated it, but we take consolation from God.”

The party further extended their commiserations to the entire elephant family and the good people of Akasti South and beyond.

Born in Tetemale, a community within Akatsi South, the late DCE was a professional teacher after graduating from the then Bimbila Training College.

He later entered active politics, campaigning vigorously for the NPP in the then Ave-Avenor Constituency.

He was regarded as one of the people who introduced the Party into Avenor politics and was maligned by many for following the elephant at the time.

The late Negble was nominated for the position of a DCE after Mr John A. Kufuor won the 2000 general elections to become the President of the Republic where he served as DCE from 2000 to 2004.

Mr Negble was credited for the numerous projects he undertook in his regime, notably among them was the construction of the Akatsi central market.

Until his demise, he was holding no position in the Party but was recently appointed as a member of the Council of Elders of the party in the Constituency where he later declined the appointment due to some disturbances regarding some constituency executives on the formation of the party’s inaccurate electoral album in the area.

Kennedy Agyapong picks form to officially join NPP flagbearer race

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has picked up his nomination forms at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Thursday.

The aspirant is confident of emerging victorious in the party’s flagbearer election.

The Assin Central Member of Parliament becomes the ninth individual to collect nomination forms since the party commenced the nomination process.

In an interview with Citi News, Kwame Owusu, the campaign manager for Kennedy Agyapong, emphasized that the candidate’s disciplinary approach has garnered significant support from the party’s grassroots.

“We believe in the grassroots. The people are excited about what honourable Ken stands for. Honourable Ken does not stand for indiscipline. Honourable is honest in terms of his dealing with the country. Honourable Ken is patriotic that he will die for Ghana, and he has demonstrated that.

So most of the time if you hear him talking loud or making a case, it is what people will come in and say that he is not conforming. Of course, he is not conforming because he stands for the ordinary people and ordinary people are not conformists,” he said.

Mr Owusu said his disciplinary nature would give him the edge over his contenders, saying “People want somebody who is disciplined because there is too much indiscipline in this country. Indiscipline leads to corruption and once you see a man that you believe is honest, and you are going to work for him, it has to be at the back of your mind that whatever you do you are going to face the whip very squarely.”

Assin North residents laud Gyakye Quayson for road repairs ahead of by-election

Following the Electoral Commission’s (EC) announcement of a by-election scheduled for June 27 in Assin North constituency, road repairs have swiftly begun in Assin Bereku, the district capital.

This development has been perceived by some residents as a chance to finally address the persistent problem of neglected roads in the area, and they have attributed this to James Gyakye Quayson, who once served as Assin North MP.

An anonymous resident expressed gratitude to James Gyakye Quayson for putting pressure on the government, stating, “When Jesus Christ died, mankind benefited, and that is the same way James Gyakye Quayson has done.”

However, concerns have been raised about whether these infrastructure projects will continue beyond the by-election.

Another resident questioned, “Whether they will still continue with all the developmental projects even after the by-elections.

Gyakye Quayson has said it already that he will give the NPP government pressure to do the needful, and so he deserves the needed applause.”

The nomination forms of Fredrick Amoah Kyei and Charles Opoku, the main contenders for the NPP, will be submitted today.

The winner of the NPP primary will compete against James Gyake Quayson of the NDC for the parliamentary seat.

The by-election was prompted by the Supreme Court’s ruling that led to the removal of former Member of Parliament Gyakye Quayson, who was deemed a Canadian citizen when he contested and won the seat in 2020.

As a result, the Assin North seat was declared vacant on May 30 by Parliament. The upcoming by-election carries significant importance for the constituency and its residents.

  • US House approves debt ceiling bill

US House approves debt ceiling bill

The United States has moved closer to enacting a deal that allows the country to borrow additional funds, just days before it faces the risk of defaulting on its debt.

The proposed measure easily cleared the House of Representatives with a vote of 314-117, despite some members defecting from both sides of the aisle.

The Senate is currently convening for a vote, which is crucial for the bill to proceed to President Joe Biden for signing into law.

The government is projected to reach its borrowing limit on June 5th, leaving little room for error as lawmakers rush to prevent a default on the nation’s $31.4 trillion (£25 trillion) debt, which serves as the foundation of the global financial system.

A default would have severe implications, preventing the government from borrowing further funds or fulfilling all its financial obligations. This scenario would also have far-reaching consequences for the global economy, impacting prices and mortgage rates in other countries.

On Wednesday evening, 165 Democrats joined 149 Republicans in approving the 99-page bill to raise the debt ceiling, allowing it to pass the House by the required simple majority.

With Republicans in control of the lower chamber of Congress and Democrats holding sway in the upper chamber and White House, a deal had proven elusive for weeks until Mr Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy inked a bipartisan compromise over the weekend.

In a statement, Mr Biden thanked the speaker, saying he had negotiated in good faith.

“Neither side got everything it wanted,” said the president. “That’s the responsibility of governing.”

  • Staff of UEW want Governing Council Chairman, Nana Ofori Ansah I, removed

Staff of UEW want Governing Council Chairman, Nana Ofori Ansah I, removed

President Akufo-Addo is being entreated by a group known as the Concerned Staff of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) to relieve the university’s Council Chairman, Nana Ofori Ansah I, of his duties.

The group also wants the Council to be dissolved as it has allegedly not been able to serve its mandate under Nana Ofori Ansah I, alleged to be authoritative.

The association argues that such conduct has escalated tensions and warns that the situation could potentially erupt into a crisis.

Nana Ofori Ansah I is facing allegations of significant leadership weaknesses since assuming office, fostering an environment of uneasiness, and actively plotting to disrupt the harmony at UEW while disregarding the University’s statutes and established protocols.

The concerns raised by the Concerned Staff of UEW highlight the growing discontent and dissatisfaction among the university community regarding the leadership style of Nana Ofori Ansah I.

The staff members believe that his approach poses a threat to the overall stability and progress of the institution.

“As clearly stated above, the call for the immediate dissolution of the UEW Governing Council and the subsequent dismissal of Nana Ofori Ansah 1 from office as Council Chairman of UEW is justified without a doubt.

He pursues his personal interest and the interests of other UEW saboteurs and saboteurs of Ghana at large at the expense of the entire UEW and Ghana as a whole. His continued stay in office as the Governing Council Chairman is a threat to the peace and stability of the University,” citinewsroom quoted a press release.

  • 18 killed after rockets hit Khartoum market

18 killed after rockets hit Khartoum market

A market in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, was struck by rockets, resulting in the death of 18 people and leaving over 100 wounded, as reported by doctors and residents.

The attack occurred amidst ongoing conflicts between rival military forces, following the collapse of truce talks mediated by the US and Saudi Arabia.

The violence on Wednesday, which took place in the Mayo area in the south of Khartoum, involved artillery fire and aerial bombardment.

This incident marked the highest number of civilian casualties in a single event in the capital since the war began in April.

The official count of civilian deaths over the past seven weeks stands at least 883, although the actual number is believed to be much higher.

Local neighborhood organizations, involved in providing food and medicine to Khartoum’s residents, described the situation as catastrophic and appealed for the assistance of doctors and blood donations.

Due to the conflict occurring in urban areas, civilians remain in constant danger.

On Tuesday, the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), their rivals, had agreed to extend a humanitarian ceasefire deal brokered by the US and Saudi Arabia for an additional five days.

However, the army withdrew from the talks the following day, accusing the RSF of not adhering to the terms of the agreement.

The US stated that both sides had violated the ceasefire and expressed its willingness to mediate a truce once they were genuinely committed to ending the violence.

While the ceasefire allowed some urgent aid to reach approximately two million people, the ongoing insecurity hindered deliveries to many more and impeded efforts to restore essential services, according to a spokesperson from the US State Department.

The UN reports that 25 million people in Sudan, over half the country’s population, are currently in need of humanitarian aid and protection.

With the talks no longer in progress, there is a concern that the fighting may escalate. Heavy fire was reported on Thursday morning in Bahri and Omdurman, cities located across the River Nile from Khartoum.

However, Dr Ken Ashigbey, explained that such individuals will be able to retrieve their funds should they be able to register their SIM during a certain grace period provided by the National Communications Authority (NCA) he failed to indicate.

“For the 7.4 million subscribers who have about over 200 million cedis on their wallet when they are barred, they also will get the opportunity if they get their numbers back then the historical records of their transaction,” he said in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM.

According to him, the NCA has been magnanimous to keep the short codes; 404# and 400# to allow subscribers who get their Ghana card within the undisclosed period during which the window remains open register and be able to recover the monies in their wallet.

In the instance where subscribers are unable to register their SIMS before the temporal window closes, he indicated that they would have to reach out to their respective mobile money operators to retrieve their funds.

“But if they don’t and the NCA decides to close the window anytime then what they would have to do is that they would have to go to their mobile money operators and there will be a procedure that will be put where they can get their money back but they will not be via mobile money. They will not be able to do mobile money transactions until they are able to regularise it,” he added.

Wednesday, May 31, 2023,  marked the final deadline for SIM card re-registration exercise which commenced on October 1, 2021.

Group lynches suspected thief at Bokankye

Unknown assailants have lynched a suspected thief, identified as Yaw Gyamfi, in the Bokankye area of the Atwiman Nwabiagya North District in the Ashanti Region.

The lifeless body of Gyamfi, a mason in his late 30s, was discovered on Thursday, June 1, 2023, near some stolen iron rods.

Local residents who gathered at the scene reported that they woke up to find the deceased’s body, expressing uncertainty about the identity of the assailants responsible for the act.

Jemima Pokua, a Unit Committee member of the Bokankye Electoral Area, stated in an interview with OTEC News that the incident did not come as a surprise due to a recent increase in robbery cases.

However, she expressed suspicion regarding this specific case, as there were no signs of a struggle at the scene.

Pokua called on the local police to investigate the matter thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to justice. The police have taken custody of the body and conveyed it to the hospital for further examination.

  • Court dismisses Gregory Afoko’s bail application

Court dismisses Gregory Afoko’s bail application

Gregory Afoko’s bail application to an Accra High Court hearing the murder case of Adams Mahama has been thrown out.

Afoko, a farmer, who has been in custody for the past eight is one of two individuals held in connection with the death of Adams Mahama, the New Patriotic Party’s Upper East Regional Chairman.

In April, a hung jury resulted in a 4:3 not guilty verdict for Afoko on charges of conspiracy and murder, leading to a retrial ordered by Justice Afua Merley Wood, a Justice of the Court of Appeal.

Afoko’s counsel, Stephen Sowah Charway, applied for bail, which was opposed by State Prosecutor Dorm Esi Fiadzo.

Justice Louise Simmons, presiding over the court, ruled that there had not been an unreasonable delay in Afoko’s retrial. It was acknowledged by both the prosecution and the defense that two separate trials had taken place within the eight-year period.

Justice Simmons further stated that since the second trial ended on April 27, 2023, there had only been a month of inactivity, attributed to the prosecution awaiting the case to be assigned by the Chief Justice.

The court emphasized that the decision to grant bail rests with the judge. Ultimately, the application for bail was refused and dismissed.

During the proceedings, Afoko was absent as he is currently on remand at the Nsawam Prison.

Afoko’s counsel argued that his continued detention was unjustifiable and unconstitutional. They highlighted Afoko’s lack of rebellious behavior and absence of prior convictions.

Counsel emphasized Afoko’s constitutional right to bail and assured the court that he was prepared to fulfill all bail conditions and comply with the retrial order.

The prosecution countered by stating that Afoko had been unable to fulfill his bail conditions in 2019, leading to his continued custody.

The State Prosecutor stressed that although Afoko was presumed innocent, he remained in custody until acquitted by a jury. She asserted that there had been no unreasonable delay in the case, considering the first trial was disrupted due to the arrest of the second accused.

The prosecution also assured the court of their readiness for the retrial, with witnesses prepared to testify promptly once assigned by the Chief Justice. They expressed concerns that granting bail could result in Afoko absconding and potentially obstructing the pursuit of justice.

Meanwhile, Asabke Alangdi, the second accused who was found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to death, has filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal challenging his conviction and sentence.

Two villages destroyed by fire in renewed Mamprusi-Gonja conflict

Violence erupted in the villages of Lukula and Nyoagbini within the North Gonja District, resulting in devastating consequences today, June 1, 2023.

Both communities have been ravaged by fire, and there are distressing reports of numerous casualties, according to MyJoyOnline.com.

The underlying cause of this tragic event is the renewed animosity between the Mamprusi and Gonja tribal groups.

Faced with this dire situation, residents are fleeing to neighboring communities in the West Mamprusi municipality in search of safety and refuge.

Recent accounts from five individuals who sought shelter in Janga near Walewale indicate that warriors from the Gonja tribe in Daboya forcefully entered the village, issuing a stark ultimatum to all Mamprusis, compelling them to evacuate immediately or face severe repercussions.

Adding to the escalating tensions, reports emerged on Tuesday, June 30, highlighting that Mamprusi warriors had been mobilized to prevent the arrival of a rival chief from Daboya.

The gravity of the situation cannot be understated as the region remains embroiled in a precarious state of conflict and unrest.

Two villages in North Gonja burnt down in renewed violence between Mamprusi and Gonja

The North East Regional Minister stated that on June 30, the National Security issued a warning to both sides, urging them to withdraw their warriors from the villages.

As a result, police personnel were deployed, leading to the arrest of several suspects and the confiscation of 10 motorbikes.

However, according to the fleeing residents, the Gonja traditional warriors are still present in the village and have refused to leave.

The violence between the two tribes in the area has been ongoing since the creation of the new regions.

The upward adjustment in electricity and water tariffs by the Public Utility Regulatory Authority (PURC) takes effect today, June 1, 2023.

The electricity tariff goes up by 18.36%, while water tariffs will see a 19% increase. These adjustments are necessary due to the rising costs of production, according to the PURC.

The Regional Director of Operations for PURC, Alhaji Abubakari Jabari, explained in an interview with Starr News that customers who pay postpaid bills on June 1, 2023, will still be charged based on the old rates.

For most water bills, the old rate will continue to apply until consumption for the month of June, after which the new rate will be implemented.

Credit deposits made by customers will be calculated using the old rate until the end of the month, following which the new rate will be applied for subsequent billing cycles.

To address concerns about purchasing credits at the beginning of the month, Alhaji Abubakari Jabari advised against panicking or rushing to buy credits to mitigate the impact of the tariff adjustment.

He clarified that buying credits early in the month does not provide any specific advantages or discounts. Purchasing credits at any time during the month will be equivalent in terms of the billing calculation.

He urged consumers not to queue or rush to purchase credits on the first day of the month, assuring them that they would not miss out on any potential benefits by buying credits at a later time during the month.

Alhaji Abubakari Jabari also reassured consumers that their billing calculations would accurately reflect their consumption regardless of the date of purchase or falling within a specific usage bracket.

“I know most people go to buy their credit at the beginning of the month, I don’t see any point in that but people have the perception that if you buy credit in the first week of the month you might get some discount. You can’t force yourself to be within the lifeline, so any time you go to buy your credit, it is as good as buying in the first week or first day of the month. It’s a normal operational issue so we don’t expect people to go and cue today in trying to avoid the effect of any adjustment that has been done,” Alhaji Abubakari Jabari added.

Tielemans and Leicester to part ways following relegation

Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans has confirmed his departure from the club. The 26-year-old Belgian joined the Foxes on loan from Monaco in 2019, eventually securing a permanent transfer on a four-year contract.

Tielemans’ decision to leave comes in the aftermath of Leicester’s relegation from the Premier League on the final day of the season.

This relegation follows their remarkable title-winning campaign seven years ago and their recent FA Cup triumph against Chelsea, in which Tielemans scored a memorable goal to secure victory.

“Dear Leicester fans, after four and a half special years and with a lot of gratitude I’m bidding farewell to this incredible club,” the Belgium international said in a video on Instagram.

“From the first day I set foot on this ground, your warmth and passion embraced me.

“Victory and triumph, love, hope and even defeat, we’ve shared many special moments together.

“I am forever grateful for your unwavering support, thank you to Khun Top, the board, the staff, the players and fans for having given me and my family a home.

“This is not a goodbye, but a heartfelt farewell. With pride, love and eternal gratitude, Youri Tielemans.”

Court finds US actor Danny Masterson guilty on two rape counts

US actor Danny Masterson, known for his role in That ’70s Show, has been found guilty on two out of three counts of rape by a jury in Los Angeles.

If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. Following the verdict, Masterson was taken into custody in handcuffs.

The charges against him stemmed from allegations made by three women, all former members of the Church of Scientology, who accused him of sexual assault at his Hollywood home between 2001 and 2003.

Prosecutors argued that Masterson had used his prominent status within the church to evade accountability. Although the jury deliberated for a week, they were unable to reach a verdict on the third count, resulting in a deadlock at 8-4.

One of his victims, who was raped in 2003, said in a statement quoted by the Associated Press: “I am experiencing a complex array of emotions – relief, exhaustion, strength, sadness – knowing that my abuser, Danny Masterson, will face accountability for his criminal behaviour.”

Masterson’s wife, actress and model Bijou Phillips, wept as he was led away, CBS News reports. Other family and friends sat stone-faced.

Another jury in an earlier trial was unable to reach a verdict in December 2022.

Prosecutors chose to retry Masterson and this time the judge allowed attorneys to present new evidence that had been barred from the first trial.

Though the actor was not charged with drugging his victims, the jury heard testimony that the women had been dosed before he raped them.

Masterson was first accused of rape in 2017 during the height of the #MeToo movement. He responded by saying that he had not been charged or convicted of a crime, and that in the climate at the time “it seems as if you are presumed guilty the moment you are accused”.

Charges came after a three-year investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department. Prosecutors did not file charges in two other cases because of insufficient evidence and the statute of limitations expiring.

Throughout the trial, prosecutors argued that the Church of Scientology had helped cover up the assaults – an allegation the organisation has categorically denied.

At the time of the assaults, Masterson and all three of his accusers were Scientologists. Several of the women said it took them years to come forward because Church of Scientology officials discouraged them from reporting the rape to police.

Instead, they were forced to rely on the Church’s “internal justice system”, prosecutors said.

Scientology officials told one survivor she would be kicked out of the Church unless she signed a non-disclosure agreement and accepted a payment of $400,000 (£320,000), according to prosecutors.

Judge Charlaine Olmedo allowed both sides to discuss the dogma and practices of Scientology.

But Deputy District Attorney Ariel Anson told jurors during the trial: “The Church taught his victims, ‘Rape isn’t rape, you caused this, and above all, you are never allowed to go to law enforcement.’”

Throughout the trial, the defence tried to undermine the credibility of the “Jane Does” by focusing on inconsistencies in their testimony and their supposed drive to get “revenge” against their former Church.

During closing arguments, Masterson’s defence lawyer said of the survivors: “If you are looking for motives why people are not being truthful… there are motives all over the place.”

Although the Church of Scientology was not a defendant in the case, before closing arguments began, a lawyer with ties to the Church emailed the district attorney’s office to complain about the way the Church was portrayed during the retrial.

The defence also argued that the prosecution had relied heavily on testimony about drugging because there was an absence of evidence of any force or violence.

Masterson’s lawyers tried, unsuccessfully, to have a mistrial declared.
