  • De Bruyne and Jack Grealish may play FA Cup final

De Bruyne and Jack Grealish may play FA Cup final

Pep Guardiola has acknowledged that he is uncertain about the availability of Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish for the upcoming FA Cup final next weekend.

In Manchester City’s final-day 1-0 defeat against Brentford, De Bruyne, Grealish, and defender Ruben Dias were all sidelined due to injuries.

As they strive to complete the second leg of a historic Treble, facing Manchester United at Wembley on Saturday, the Premier League champions suffered defeat courtesy of Ethan Pinnock’s late goal.

With the absence of De Bruyne and Grealish, and Erling Haaland left on the bench, Manchester City fielded a makeshift lineup, and even the presence of established stars like Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez failed to make a significant impact.

But Guardiola said: “Congratulations to Brentford for the victory. It’s difficult to faze them, how quick they play, how aggressive they are in all departments.

“I’m pretty sure we would have behaved a little bit different if we needed the points.

“I don’t have any complaints of how we behaved. I said to the players after the game, ‘Today we finished the Premier League you deservedly won. Enjoy two days with your families, don’t see each other and on Wednesday we’ll prepare for the first final’.

“The guys who didn’t play who normally play were exhausted yesterday. They needed to rest to arrive with the right energy to face United.”

When asked if the players who missed out would be fit for Wembley, Guardiola said: “I don’t know right now. Hopefully.

“Ruben, Jack and Kevin couldn’t play. It is what it is. I think they will be ready but it’s hard to get ready in training. That’s why I had to see the players who played today.”

Pinnock’s 85th-minute strike made Brentford the only team to do the double over City this season — and only the fifth since Guardiola took over in 2016.

The Spaniard added: “They are the best team by far at set-pieces, they are exceptional. What Thomas Frank has done for years is amazing and the unity of his squad is there for all to see.

“Hopefully we can do better and beat them like we did last season, so we have a target for next season already.”

  • Turkey: President Erdogan beats Kilicdaroglu to retain power

Turkey: President Erdogan beats Kilicdaroglu to retain power

Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s supporters jubilantly celebrated throughout the night after Turkey’s long-serving president secured another five years in power.

“We have won as the entire nation of 85 million,” he declared to exultant crowds outside his immense palace on the outskirts of Ankara.

However, his call for unity rang hollow as he proceeded to mock his opponent, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, while also targeting a jailed Kurdish leader and the LGBT community.

The opposition leader stopped short of explicitly conceding defeat.

Denouncing “the most unjust election in recent years,” Mr. Kilicdaroglu asserted that the president’s political party had employed all the resources of the state against him.

Based on nearly complete unofficial results, President Erdogan obtained just over 52% of the vote. It is important to note that nearly half of the electorate in this deeply divided country did not support his authoritarian vision for Turkey.

Ultimately, Mr. Kilicdaroglu proved to be no match for the well-organized Erdogan campaign, even though he managed to force the president into a second-round runoff, a first since the direct election of the post in 2014.

Nonetheless, he made only a slight dent in his rival’s lead from the first round, trailing by over two million votes.

The president made the most of his victory, with an initial speech to supporters atop a bus in Turkey’s biggest city, Istanbul, followed after dark by a balcony address from his palace to an adoring crowd that he numbered at 320,000 people.

“It is not just us who won, Turkey won,” he declared, calling it one of the most important elections in Turkish history.

He taunted his opponent’s defeat with the words “Bye, bye, Kemal” – a chant that was also taken up by his supporters in Ankara.

Mr Erdogan poured scorn on the main opposition party’s increase in its number of MPs in the parliamentary vote two weeks earlier. The true number had fallen to 129, he said, because the party had handed over dozens of seats to its allies.

He also condemned the opposition alliance’s pro-LGBT policies, which he said were in contrast with his own focus on families.

The run-up to the vote had become increasingly rancorous. In one incident, an opposition Good party official was fatally stabbed in front of a party office in the northern coastal town of Ordu.

The motive for Erhan Kurt’s killing was not clear, but a leading opposition official blamed youths celebrating the election result.

Although the final results were not confirmed, the Supreme Election Council said there was no doubt who had won.

It is highly unusual for the palace complex to be opened to the public – but so was this result, extending his period in power to a quarter of a century.

Supporters came from all over Ankara to taste the victory. There were Islamic chants, while some laid Turkish flags on the grass to pray.

For a night, Turkey’s economic crisis was forgotten. One supporter, Seyhan, said it was all a lie: “Nobody is hungry. We are very happy with his economy policies. He will do even better in the next five years.”

But the president admitted that tackling inflation was Turkey’s most urgent issue.

The question is whether he is prepared to take the necessary measures to do so. At an annual rate of almost 44%, inflation seeps into everyone’s lives.

The cost of food, rent and other everyday goods has soared, exacerbated by Mr Erdogan’s refusal to observe orthodox economic policy and raise interest rates.

The Turkish lira has hit record lows against the dollar and the central bank has struggled to meet surging demand for foreign currency.

“If they continue with low interest rates, as Erdogan has signalled, the only other option is stricter capital controls,” warns Selva Demiralp, professor of economics at Koc university in Istanbul.

Economics was far from the minds of Erdogan supporters, who spoke of their pride at his powerful position in the world and his hard line on fighting “terrorists”, by which they meant Kurdish militants.

President Erdogan has accused his opposite number of siding with terrorists, and criticised him for promising to free a former co-leader of Turkey’s second largest opposition party, the pro-Kurdish HDP.

Selahattin Demirtas has been languishing in jail since 2016, despite the European Court of Human Rights ordering his release.

Mr Erdogan said while he was in power, Mr Demirtas would stay behind bars.

He also promised to prioritise rebuilding in areas hit by February’s twin earthquakes and bring about the “voluntary” return of a million Syrian refugees.

Crowds flocked to Istanbul’s Taksim Square, with many coming from the Middle East and the Gulf.

Palestinians from Jordan wrapped Turkish flags around their shoulders. A Tunisian visitor, Alaa Nassar, said Mr Erdogan had not just made improvements to his own country, “he is also supporting Arabs and the Muslim world”.

For all the celebrations, the idea of unity in this polarised country seems farther away than ever.

Since a failed coup in 2016, Mr Erdogan has abolished the post of prime minister and amassed extensive powers, which his opponent had pledged to roll back.

One voter outside an Ankara polling station on Sunday said he wanted to see an end to the brain drain that began with the post-coup purge. There is a risk that it may now intensify.

Turkey’s defeated opposition will now have to regroup ahead of local elections in 2024.

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a high-profile favourite among opposition supporters, appealed to them not to despair.

He reminded them on Monday that the opposition had defeated the ruling party in Ankara and Istanbul in 2019 months after they had lost the last presidential election.

That was only achieved after they changed strategy and started from scratch, he explained: “We will never expect different results by doing the same things.”

Ghanaians to continue paying COVID Health Recovery Levy – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has announced that Ghanaians will continue to pay COVID Health Recovery Levy despite the coronavirus outbreak no longer being a public health emergency.

Addressing the nation on Sunday, May 28, 2023, the president noted that although COVID-19 may no longer be classified as deadly and hence might not require drastic measures and ample funds to battle it, Ghanaians should keep paying the levy.

“The COVID Health Recovery Levy that was introduced to help fund some of the expenditure might not be the most popular tax but I entreat all of you to bear with us,” the president said.

Parliament enacted the COVID–19 Health Recovery Levy, 2021 (Act 1068) to impose a
special levy on the supply of goods and services and imports to raise revenue to
support the COVID–19 expenditures and other related matters.

The levy is chargeable at a rate of 1% calculated on the value of taxable supply
    in respect of:
    a. supply of goods and services made in Ghana, but excluding exempt goods
    or services; and
    b. Import of goods and services into Ghana.

The COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy is applicable to both Standard Rate and VAT
    Flat Rate registered persons.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has announced government’s decision to end the mandate of the COVID Trust Fund owing to the recent development of the pandemic.

He expressed gratitude to the Trustees of the Fund and all of its donors for their support to the country during the trying times.

“The COVID Trust Fund has performed an invaluable service and with these developments, it has reached the end of its mandate. I thank the Trustees as well as all donors and contributors to the Fund,” he said.

China’s domestically-made C919 passenger plane makes maiden flight

China’s inaugural domestically-produced passenger aircraft has achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing its maiden commercial flight.

State television showcased the C919 jet soaring into the skies above Shanghai, embarking on its journey to Beijing in the early hours of Sunday.

Manufactured by the Commercial Aviation Corporation of China (Comac), the C919 aims to challenge the market dominance of Airbus and Boeing in the realm of single-aisle aircraft.

However, despite its achievement, the 164-seat aircraft still heavily relies on Western components, including engines and avionics.

The Shanghai-Beijing leg of the flight, carrying over 130 passengers, was accomplished in just under three hours.

“I’m really confident in our country,” said passenger Liu Peng. He told Reuters news agency C919 “will definitely get better and better”.

“I’m feeling very emotional,” said 21-year-old student and flight enthusiast LV Boyuan. He spoke to Reuters at Shanghai airport before he boarded a normal flight to Chengdu, from where he planned to take a return C919 flight the day after.

State-backed China Eastern Airline has ordered five of the planes.

Comac – which plans to produce 150 planes annually in five years’ time – says it has already secured more than 1,200 orders for the C919.

Some experts, however, say that most of these orders are believed to be letters of intent from domestic customers.

President Xi Jinping, who sat in the cockpit of a mock-up C919 a few years ago, has described the project as one of China’s most innovative achievements.

The C919 made its first test flight in 2017 and has undergone several similar flights since.

David Adjaye has not been contracted to design a Kigali Cathedral – Ablakwa reveals

Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has dismissed claims made by some Ghanaians, including broadcaster Paul Adom-Otchere, that architect Sir David Adjaye, who designed the National Cathedral of Ghana, has been awarded the contract to design a new Kigali Cathedral for Rwanda.

According to Mr Ablakwa, he received an official response from the Rwanda Development Board after inquiring about the cathedral, stating that no such contract exists.

North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

In a tweet posted on Sunday, May 28, 2023, the MP referred to the assertions of Adjaye winning the contract as baseless fabrications.

“At 12:57pm on Friday May 26, 2023, I received formal response to my enquiry from Mr. Ben Gasore, Digital Media Consultant at the Rwanda Development Board stating unambiguously that the RDB has not awarded a contract to David Adjaye to design a Kigali Cathedral,” parts of the tweet read.

The tweet contained pictures of stories on the award of the contract and a picture of Paul Adom-Otchere when he was making the claim on his Good Evening Ghana programme on Thursday.

    Paul Adom-Otchere

The broadcaster claimed that the Rwandan President Paul Kagame has contracted Sir David Adjaye to build the cathedral using state funds.

“Paul Kagame has called Sir David that what is Ghana saying about you? ….and they are building a Cathedral in Rwanda.

“And they are building it with taxpayers’ money because Kagame has taken the decision that as he is getting ready to exit, he needs to put the cathedral inside the ground of Rwanda,” he said.

Mauricio Pochettino becomes Chelsea’s next head coach

Mauricio Pochettino is said to have signed a contract to become Chelsea‘s manager next season.

The former Tottenham manager had already verbally agreed to take over from Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge, and now he has put pen to paper to make the deal official.

Per reports, he has signed a three-year deal after flying to England from Spain to complete the formalities for his new job.

Since being fired by Paris Saint-Germain at the close of the previous season, the 51-year-old Argentine has not been worked as a manager.

Pochettino agreed to take over the team in April, but he wasn’t scheduled to start until the summer because Lampard would continue as manager despite the Blues’ dismal season.

The 51-year-old is rumored to want to speak with Lampard before he officially assumes the position at the end of the season, however the two managers have not yet had any planned meetings.

Previous conversations between Pochettino and the Chelsea executives were described as ‘incredibly positive’ after he became front-runner for the job when Julian Nagelsmann backed out.

Chelsea have had a disastrous campaign, finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League in a season to forget. They have had four at least interim managers, though will hope for a more settled future with Pochettino taking the reigns next term.

GECA worried over influx of fake electrical materials

The Ghana Electrical Contractors Association (GECA) has urged the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) and the Energy Commission to expedite the enforcement of regulations governing electrical accessories.

In a press statement issued by GECA President Awal Sakib Mohammed on Friday, May 26, 2023, the association cautioned electrical practitioners and the general public about the increasing presence of substandard and counterfeit electrical products in the Ghanaian market.

GECA emphasized that the trade of substandard or fake electrical accessories is even more detrimental than dealing in illicit drugs, as it poses a significant risk to people’s lives, hard-earned investments, health, and overall well-being.

“Dealing in substandard electrical materials is akin and even worse than dealing in illicit substances, as it has the likelihood of robbing people of off their hard-earned investments, health and even loved ones” the statement conveyed.

Lockyer appreciates medical staff for ‘swift response’ after collapse

Luton captain Tom Lockyer expressed his gratitude to the medical staff for their “swift and thorough response” after he collapsed during his team’s Sky Bet Championship play-off final win against Coventry.

During the match, while running back, the defender suddenly fell to the ground and received immediate treatment from the medical team. He was subsequently carried off the pitch on a stretcher.

After the game ended 1-1 following extra time, with goals from Jordan Clark and Gustavo Hamer, Luton secured Premier League football for the next season with a 6-5 victory in the penalty shootout.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Lockyer thanked the medical staff and acknowledged their quick and comprehensive actions. Throughout the team’s celebrations, his teammates held up his shirt in a show of support and solidarity.

He said: “Well not quite where I thought I’d be celebrating at the final whistle!

“I would just like to say a massive thank you to the amazing physios and doctors at Luton and Wembley for the swift and thorough response.

“A much scarier moment for everyone else than myself I am sure!

“Commiserations to Coventry a fantastic opponent over 3 games which had to be decided by penalties.

“I am currently in hospital under precaution and will stay here overnight for further tests in the morning.

“I am feeling very much myself, helped by the way the lads left it all out on pitch! It’s such an honour to be part of this team.. Premier League baby.”

A thrilling finale at Wembley saw victory secure a return to the top flight for Luton for the first time since 1992.

It is a remarkable turnaround given just nine years ago the Hatters ended a five-season stretch in the fifth tier, but manager Rob Edwards admitted emotions were “mixed” afterwards following Lockyer’s collapse.

“I felt a bit numb. I just made sure I shook Mark’s hand and his staff,” Edwards said.

“I don’t want to be that guy that just starts running off and celebrating before I’ve seen the other manager.

“I just felt very numb. I still do. It hasn’t sunk in quite yet. It might take a few days, but it’s great. It does feel good.

“It was mixed because of Locks (Lockyer), that’s why I couldn’t really go for it celebrating.”

Quality of Free SHS beneficiaries in universities unsatisfactory; no value for money – Dr Apaak

The Member of Parliament for Builsa South wants the immediate review of government’s flagship Free Senior High School (SHS) programme owing to the detrimental effects on Ghana’s human resources.

According to Dr Clement Abass Apaak, the policy has increased the enrolment of students in second cycle institutions, however, it was degraded the value students that churn out every year into the tertiary institutions.

Speaking on JoyNews on Saturday, he stated some stakeholders in academia are unenthused about the performance of the crop of students they tutor.

“The Free Senior High School has led to an increase in enrollment but with poor learning outcomes, I think that is very significant.

“You can call a few of my colleagues who are at the universities and lecturers and ask them, about the quality of students, who are coming through these days. They will tell you that the quality is unsatisfactory.”

He noted that these dissatisfied lecturers are proposing an entrance examination as a result.

Dr Apaak is of the reason that the component of poor learning outcomes justifies the call for review by former President John Mahama and the likes of Prof Ayettey, Prof Addae-Mensah, Kofi Asare of Education Watch, and Dr Partey of the Institute of Educational Studies

“Are we getting value for money and the answer is no,” he stressed.

The Free SHS programme is amongst the sixteen projects the government is expected to review as part of its conditionalities to obtain the second tranche of money from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

On the back of this, Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah on May 24, 2023, revealed that the government already had plans to review the programme.

The government said it spent some GH¢5.3 billion on Free SHS in 2021. This was disclosed by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta in the 2022 Mid-Year Budget Review presented before parliament Monday, 25 July 2022.

The amount he noted was to enable some 1.2 million children access senior high education.

  • I have no intention to cast a slur upon the people of Nogokpo, Volta Region – Archbishop Agyinasare

I have no intention to cast a slur upon the people of Nogokpo, Volta Region – Archbishop Agyinasare

Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, the General Overseer and Founder of Perez Chapel International, has clarified that he did not intend to make derogatory remarks about specific groups or communities while touting the power of God Almighty.

His recent comment follows the circulation of a video where he referred to the town of Nogokpo in the Ketu South Municipal as the “headquarters of demons” in the Volta Region.

Archbishop Agyinasare has addressed the criticisms and emphasized that his comments were not meant to cast a negative light on any particular group of people or their communities.

Responding to his critics during Church Service on Sunday, May 28, he said, “I have received calls from people very close to me and my attention has been drawn to social media commentary on some portions of comments I made this past Thursday during the Supernatural Empowerment Summit at the Perez Dome.”

He said he was speaking on the divine protection Christians enjoy from God and was teaching congregants about the need to activate divine protection from demonic attacks.

“This is a cardinal principle of our faith as Charismatic Christians,” he said.

Archbishop Agyinasare emphasised “To drive home my point, I made reference to several instances where I have encountered manifestations of demonic powers in my crusades which have taken me to over 90 countries of the world.

“I gave an example of people who were seeking to levitate during a crusade in India. I gave an example of a demonic attack I suffered as a very young pastor who had gone to preach at a bus stop around Korle Bu.”

According to him, “In reference to Nogokpo, I wish to clarify that I never intended to refer to the town but rather make reference to an incident that happened after a crusade at Aflao.”

The Archbishop stated that he “had absolutely no intention to cast a slur upon the people of the Nogokpo town and the Volta Region as a whole.”

He added, “I have had a very cordial relationship with the people of the Volta Region, and my wife of 38 years is, in fact, an Ewe from Keta. Two of my biological children bear Ewe names.”

The man of God stated that none of these examples was intended to denigrate any of the towns and their people but rather to elucidate the principle of divine protection to congregants.

He said, “Any misrepresentation or misinformation that has characterised the subsequent commentary and reportage is unfortunate.

“My ministry over the past 40 years has been one that has spoken up at critical times in our nation as a spiritual gatekeeper and I remain committed to serving God’s people and our nation as the Spirit directs.”

  • The journey of Chelsea’s fourth straight title

The journey of Chelsea’s fourth straight title

The title race went down to the final day of the season, but their 3-0 win at Reading officially crowned them Women’s Super League winners for 2022/23 and ensured they claimed the trophy for an unprecedented four consecutive year.

However, things did not start quite as smoothly as that might suggest. On the opening day of the campaign, newly-promoted Liverpool gave their rivals hope they could pry their fingers off the trophy by beating us 2-1. The match saw all three goals scored from the penalty spot in addition to a controversial Chelsea strike being disallowed.

Emma Hayes’ side quickly proved that defeat was an anomaly rather than a sign of things to come and displayed their resilience and ability to bounce back from disappointment against title hopefuls Manchester City at Kingsmeadow.

In an eye-catching 2-0 victory, the performance was much-improved and thoroughly composed, even if goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger emerged as the hero of the day with a string of impressive saves in front of a sell-out crowd.

That turned out to be the first of nine consecutive league victories for the Blues; the memory of the opening-day defeat was quickly banished and their title credentials were underlined. And the winning run included big back-to-back victories that will have sent shivers down the spines of their rivals near the top of the WSL.

The first was a confidence boosting 3-0 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur in a London derby played in front of a big crowd at Stamford Bridge, a day given added poignancy by Hayes’ return to the dugout after missing several games following emergency hysterectomy surgery.

Better was to follow as Chelsea fans in attendance at their next match – away to Leicester City – were treated to a goal-fest as we ran away 8-0 winners, their biggest league victory of the season. By the final whistle at Leicester, the recovery from the early stumble in Liverpool was complete, with the Blues now sat at the summit of the table.

While not as eye-catching, and only worth a solitary point, perhaps just as important was their late equaliser against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in our first match of 2023.

It wasn’t the result the Blues would have hoped for when making the journey across the capital following the winter break, but when Sam Kerr scored an 89th-minute header to level the score at 1-1 with her 11th goal of the campaign, it felt a moment that could prove crucial as it denied the Gunners the chance to draw level at the top of the table and maintained their three-point advantage.

They played just one more league fixture before the end of February, with domestic and European cup matches taking precedent to give their rivals the chance to take the upper hand, at least temporarily. But when they did return to the fight, they picked up where we had left off.

After beating Tottenham and Brighton, it was time for a tense match against their closest title challengers Manchester United. There was plenty on the line. Yet as is so often the case, it was Chelsea and Kerr who came out on top; the Australian latched onto Lauren James’ fine pass and netted an audacious lob to settle a cagey top-of-the-table clash 1-0.

It still wasn’t plain sailing for the Blues, although it was a different Manchester side which inflicted the next setback, as arguably the most competitive WSL title race to date gathered pace.

With a growing injury list to contend with, Hayes’ side succumbed to an early onslaught away at Manchester City at the end of March, with two goals in the opening 30 minutes resulting in a 2-0 loss. It was their first league defeat since the opening and knocked us down to third in the table, although we were still only a point off top spot with a game in hand.

In typical style, they bounced back emphatically. Aston Villa were our victims and were brushed aside with a 3-0 win away in Walsall. The icing on the cake came in the second half when Kerr completed the scoring with her landmark 50th goal in the Women’s Super League.

They continued to keep pace with the WSL leaders and stayed within striking distance thanks to a series of victories, including a late Kerr goal to secure revenge against Liverpool following our loss on the opening day.

Having played fewer games than our rivals, we knew the destination of the title was in our own hands going into the home straight. Maximum points in our final five fixtures would guarantee top spot.

The Blues set about that task ruthlessly. Thumping wins over Everton (7-0) and Leicester (6-0) were recorded before our game in hand arrived in the form of a trip to West Ham United. Again, we made quick work of our opponents, coming home with a 4-0 victory and, most importantly, returning to top of the table with a two-point lead to defend.

Our final home game of the WSL campaign came against Arsenal – and it was an emotional one as captain Magdalena Eriksson and Pernille Harder said goodbye to supporters at Kingsmeadow. They made sure to sign off with an important 2-0 victory, with Eriksson scoring our second goal on the day.

That evening, title challengers Manchester United were a couple of minutes from dropping points against Man City, which would have crowned us champions. But a late winner kept the race alive into the final round of matches.

It proved only a temporary delay to Chelsea’s coronation as Women’s Super League champions, though, as they did their job on the last day by beating Reading and ensuring they ended the season sat at the top of the table for the fourth year in a row.

  • Justice Torkornoo lied, judges receive ex-gratia – Legal practitioner

Justice Torkornoo lied, judges receive ex-gratia – Legal practitioner

Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, a private legal practitioner and professor of economics, widely known as Kwaku Azar, has strongly advised Ghanaians to disregard the assertions made by Chief Justice nominee, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, regarding ex gratia payments to apex court judges.

During her appearance before Parliament’s Appointment Committee on Friday, May 26, 2023, the Chief Justice nominee sought to dismiss the belief that judges and magistrates receive ex gratia benefits upon retirement.

“I think that consistently, the Association of Judges and Magistrates has responded to questions on ex gratia for judges and made it very clear that judges don’t receive ex gratia.

“We continue in office; we don’t leave office until you retire. We don’t have a cycle, and therefore, the discussion of ex gratia is not applicable to us.

“This specific provision, where our names [judges] are mentioned, and how our salaries are set under Article 71, is determined by a committee, a presidential committee that handles that work. The framers of the Constitution believed that was the appropriate way to ensure our independence, and we are not the only individuals subject to it. It’s an entrenched provision and can only be changed through an elaborate process,” she stated.

However, Kwaku Azar has urged the public to completely disregard these claims.

In a Facebook post dated Saturday, May 27, 2023, Prof. Azar stated that the claim cannot be true.

According to the US-based professor, Supreme Court Justices, for instance, do receive ex gratia, which does not even include other benefits such as cars, protocols, and health benefits.

“So, completely disregard the claim by the CJ nominee that judges do not receive ex gratia. They do.

“Judges’ ex gratia is much better than that of politicians, whose tenure is entirely at the mercy of the electorate. In contrast, judges have job security and lifetime pensions,” he stated.

The Good Governance (GoGo) advocate said the system of ex gratia for judges should be abolished and replaced with a certificate of appreciation, which will be awarded to judges upon their retirement.

“Note that GoGo will scrap all monetary payments for ex gratia and replace it with a certificate of appreciation.

“Also, note that such a certificate is entirely consistent with Article 71. In fact, because ex gratia is a ‘tip,’ it’s supposed to be minimal, not the extravagant scheme that the Professor Dis and Dat Committees have turned it into,” Prof. Azar said.

The issue of ex gratia has become topical in Ghana’s political and governance discoure in recent time.

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, former President John Dramani Mahama has already promised to scrap ex gratia if he is elected back into office.

However, pro-government persons have dismissed his promise describing it as populist and not feasible.

Read Prof Azar’s full post below:

SC judges retire on the current salary of SC judges.

In addition, they receive ex gratia (gratuity) equal to 3 months salary for each year on the SC, 2 months salary for each year on the Court of Appeal, and one month salary for each year on the high court.

So let’s assume a SC judge currently earns ₵40k a month.

He’d receive this amount, adjusted for any future increases in the salary of serving members, for life. That is his pension.

But on retirement, he’d also receive a one time payment as gratuity. Consider Justice Anin Yeboah who served on the HC for 1 year, CoA for 5 years, and SC for 15 years.

His ex gratia is 45 (3*15) months salary for his service on the SC; 10 (2*5) months salary for his service on the CoA; and 1 (1*1) month salary for his service on the HC. He gets ex gratia credit for 56 months (45 + 10 + 1).
    So in total 40,000 * 56 = ₵2,240,000 in ex gratia.

This does not prejudice their other benefits in the form of cars, protocols, health, etc.

So ignore completely the claim by the CJ nominee that judges do not receive ex gratia. They do.

Judges’ ex gratia is much better than the politicians whose tenure is entirely at the mercy of the electorate. In contrast, judges’ have job security and life time pensions.

Note that GOGO will scrap all monetary payments for ex gratia and replace it with a certificate of appreciation.

Note also that such a certificate is entirely consistent with article 71. In fact, because ex gratia is a “tip,” it’s supposed to be de minimis not the boondoggle that the Professor Dis and Dat Committees have turned it into.

  • Ghanaians advised to hold duty bearers accountable using Right to Information law

Ghanaians advised to hold duty bearers accountable using Right to Information law

Ghanaians are being encouraged to utilize the provisions of the Right to Information law to access information from public institutions whenever the need arises.

In order to facilitate this process, a significant number of public institutions, totaling 478, have established information units and appointed designated officers to handle requests made under the Right to Information (RTI) Law.

Investigative journalists, who often uncover sensitive information and hold public officials accountable, are particularly vulnerable to physical and digital attacks. These attacks typically come from individuals associated with officials who fear exposure and public scrutiny.

To provide protection and support to journalists, Kwaku Krobea Asante, the Project Coordinator at the Media Foundation for West Africa, emphasizes that journalists should take refuge in the provisions of the Right to Information Law.

He was speaking at a training session about the Right to Information law.

“The law empowers citizens. No longer will journalists or citizens go to public offices and beg for information. It gives the citizens power to stand behind the law and push and call for the fundamental human rights to information,” he said.

Citizen groups and journalists in the Ashanti Region who participated in the training are expected to hold duty bearers in their communities accountable.

“We live in a society where the people seeking accountability sometimes become targets. Sometimes the work you are doing may be making a public official unpopular. We advise journalists to be careful of how they conduct themselves in public spaces. Sometimes, it is not just about the physical attacks, but digital attacks,” he advised.

  • PSG claim 11th title as Messi gives definite strike

PSG claim 11th title as Messi gives definite strike

Lionel Messi showcased his skills by scoring a crucial goal as Paris Saint-Germain clinched their record-breaking 11th Ligue 1 title, despite being held to a 1-1 draw against Strasbourg on Saturday.

In the midst of his impending departure from PSG as his contract expires, Messi made an impact by breaking the deadlock with his 16th goal of the season just before the hour mark at Stade de la Meinau.

However, Strasbourg substitute Kevin Gameiro denied PSG victory with a 79th-minute equalizer, preventing Christophe Galtier’s team from securing a win. Nevertheless, the single point earned proved sufficient for PSG to successfully defend their Ligue 1 title with a match to spare.

The draw also confirmed Strasbourg’s position in the top-flight, as Frederic Antonetti’s team maintained a six-point lead over 17th-placed Nantes, who failed to secure a victory against Lille.

PSG survived a scare in the 15th minute as Habib Diallo intercepted El Chadaille Bitshiabu’s sloppy pass back towards Gianluigi Donnarumma, but Sergio Ramos reacted quickly to clear the forward’s attempt from a tight angle.

Diallo drew a smart reflex save from Donnarumma, while Matz Sels produced a fine stop at the other end to keep out Renato Sanches’ volley from a Kylian Mbappe corner.

Strasbourg continued to carry the greater attacking threat and went close again when Diallo rattled the right post with a thumping 20-yard volley.

But PSG broke through 14 minutes into the second half when Messi arrived late in the box to collect Mbappe’s square ball before neatly sweeping into the far corner.

The duo almost reversed roles for a second goal soon after as Messi crossed for Mbappe, who failed to convert from inside the six-yard box.

Yet PSG were denied victory by former player Gameiro, who capitalised to snatch a draw 11 minutes from time after Donnarumma parried Morgan Sanson’s initial attempt.

  • Govt urged to address infrastructure deficit at Hohoe EP SHS

Govt urged to address infrastructure deficit at Hohoe EP SHS

School authorities of Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Senior High School have made an appeal to the government to address the pressing infrastructure needs of the institution.

The management of the school made the clarion call during the school’s 60th anniversary celebration.

Headmaster Franklin Amesimeku stressed the urgency of taking action to tackle the numerous challenges facing the school.

Currently accommodating around 3,369 students, the lack of a functional bus for transporting students to programs and other locations was highlighted as a hindrance to their academic progress.

Mr. Amesimeku further highlighted the difficulties faced in administrative work due to the absence of school pick-up vehicles, exacerbated by the poor condition of the existing vehicle.

The appeal made by the school authorities highlights the critical need for infrastructure improvements to support the effective functioning and development of Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Senior High School.

He noted that having good vehicles will help provide more effective school administration.

Regarding dormitories, Mr. Amesimeku noted that it is evident that the inadequacy of facilities directly affects academic performance.

He further noted that accommodating over 3,200 students in dormitories meant for less than a thousand students is not only dehumanizing but also portrays management and stakeholders as indifferent to students.

“It is in light of this inexpressible condition that we, as an institution, have high expectations of receiving help from every possible source to address this significant infrastructure deficit,” he noted.

“In light of the implementation of free SHS, students from all regions of the country are placed in the school, leaving us with no choice but to admit them. This has overwhelmed the existing accommodation facilities, resulting in severe congestion,” he added.

Hohoe EP SHS appeals to government for support over infrastructure deficit

Mr. Franklin Amesimeku also lamented the stalled GetFund two-story administration block project located just opposite the current administration block, which has been left at the mercy of the weather.

He mentioned that the project began in 2020 but has been abandoned, making administrative work difficult.

“This structure is deteriorating as work has been stalled for over three years now, and considering the amount of funds already invested in that project, we cannot afford to let it decay. Therefore, we are calling on GetFund to promptly complete this building for the growth of the school,” he emphasized.

Regarding security, he noted that the school is always gripped with fear due to the fact that there are only two security personnel on campus.

Thus, he urged the hiring of additional security personnel for the school. However, he commended the government, the Ministry of Education, and the Member of Parliament for the area, John Peter Amewu, for their continuous support to the school.

The school Prefect, Attara Kwesi Prosper, in his speech, highlighted that the prefectorial board, in collaboration with the teachers, ensures an effective prep system to help students excel in their examinations.

Master Attara Kwesi Prosper also expressed concern about the lack of sufficient water storage facilities such as poly tanks and reservoirs, making it difficult for students to arrive at school on time.

The 60th anniversary of EP Senior High School (HEPSS) was celebrated under the theme “HEPSS@60: Reflecting on Our Journey and Inspiring New Directions: The Role of Stakeholders.”

The occasion was graced by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Minister of Railways John Peter Amewu, among many other dignitaries.

  • Unrest in Mozambique over cholera outbreak misinformation

Unrest in Mozambique over cholera outbreak misinformation

Health officials report that false claims regarding the spread of a cholera outbreak in northern Mozambique have resulted in violent protests and fatalities.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified instances where misinformation about the disease has contributed to these acts of unrest.

Examining the protests through social media posts and local media reports, we have gained insight into the underlying causes of the disturbances.

In a recent incident in the town of Gurue, Zambezia province, a man was fatally beaten by individuals who falsely accused him of spreading cholera, as confirmed by health officials.

A graphic video circulating on social messaging platforms, witnessed by the BBC, depicts the man’s body surrounded by a large crowd.

A crowd gathers near where a man was killed outside a health centre in Gurue

Image caption, The death of a man in Gurue was recorded in a video obtained by the BBC

In another protest, four individuals were killed during clashes between police and a group that attacked homes and properties belonging to local officials in Nacala Porto, Nampula province.

In Cabo Delgado province, located further north, police resorted to firing shots into the air to disperse a crowd attempting to assault a health center in the Meluco district. These incidents highlight the dangerous consequences of misinformation and the urgent need to address the dissemination of false claims during public health crises.

It is unclear what is fuelling the misinformation – which is largely spreading through word of mouth – although our monitoring of social media has provided some insight.

Cholera thrives in conditions where water sanitation is inadequate.

Some online posts claim falsely that measures implemented by local health officials, such as adding chlorine to water supplies and the use of purifiers, are in fact spreading the disease.

The BBC’s Jose Tembe in Maputo says almost all violent cases related to cholera stem from misinformation.

“Also targeted are grassroots leaders who mobilise people to use the purifiers. The leaders are falsely thought to be part of the alleged group spreading the water-borne disease,” he says.

In a caption accompanying the video of the killing in Garue, the victim was alleged to have distributed infected “dust” at a property in the area.

The WHO Africa representative in Mozambique, Severin von Xylander, says misinformation is dangerous because it can fuel behaviour that drives the spread of disease.

Mozambique has been battling an outbreak of the disease since September last year.

It’s just one of many countries in the region facing rising cases of cholera, including South Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe, DR Congo and Kenya.

“This, in turn, undermines trust in health authorities, which hampers public health responses and ultimately prolongs outbreaks.”

  • Borussia Dortmund suffer final-day heartbreak

    Borussia Dortmund suffer final-day heartbreak

Borussia Dortmund experienced heartbreak on the final day of the season as they narrowly missed out on clinching their first Bundesliga title in 11 years, losing the race by goal difference. Despite a valiant fightback to secure a 2-2 draw against Mainz, it wasn’t enough to claim the championship.

Edin Terzic’s team had their hopes dashed when Bayern Munich secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Koln, with Jamal Musiala scoring a late winner for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Dortmund found themselves in a constant battle to catch up after conceding two first-half goals from Andreas Hanche-Olsen and Karim Onisiwo, with Sebastien Haller also failing to convert a weak penalty.

Raphael Guerreiro provided a glimmer of hope with a goal in the second half, but Musiala’s late strike for Bayern at the RheinEnergie Stadion made Niklas Sule’s last-minute equalizer for BVB inconsequential in the title race.

After Bayern went ahead early in Koln, Signal Iduna Park was silenced in the 15th minute as Hanche-Olsen headed in Edimilson Fernandes’ corner.

Dortmund squandered a great opportunity to respond within four minutes, Finn Dahmen saving Haller’s tame penalty after Dominik Kohr fouled Guerreiro in the box.

The hosts were duly punished five minutes later, the unmarked Onisiwo afforded too much space to nod Lee Jae-sung’s cross beyond Gregor Kobel.

Julian Brandt and Donyell Malen went close at the other end but Mainz almost added a third after half-time, Lee calling Kobel into action and Onisiwo rattling the post.

Opportunities went begging for Haller and Malen, but Dortmund finally broke through in the 69th minute as Guerreiro exchanged passes with substitute Gio Reyna before slotting past Dahmen.

Dortmund required a further two goals, but Marco Reus missed a great chance while Haller and Reyna headed straight at Dahmen.

It was not until the 96th minute that Sule levelled but following the dramatic developments in Koln, it was too late for the hosts to find a third goal to take the title away from Bayern.

  • Boat disaster on Black Volta claims one life, 5 others missing

A tragic boat accident occurred on the Black Volta in the Savannah Region, resulting in the death of one individual and approximately five others reported as missing.

The incident took place when a boat carrying passengers from Dorkorchina to Kpandai capsized, allegedly due to overloading.

Mr. Kipo Sulemana, the Bole District Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), verified the occurrence to Citi News on Saturday, May 27.

According to his statement, one person lost their life, two individuals survived the incident, and approximately five others are still unaccounted for.

“They were traders who were coming from the northern part of the Bono side across to their villages, and they are always around the riverside up to the Côte d’Ivoire boundary. These people were coming from the northern side and when they got to a point, their canoe capsized. We recorded one death, a lady. The ladies were two with three men and the one who was driving the engine boat is yet to be recovered to know whether he is alive or not.”

NADMO also disclosed that the boat was loaded with the victims and goods at the time the accident happened.

Mr. Sulemana had earlier told the Ghana News Agency that the part of the lake where they were travelling was littered with tree stumps which allegedly caused the accident.

He said where the incident happened was inaccessible, adding NADMO was relying on local people to help rescue those missing.

Govt to replace textbooks with laptops in SHSs by end of the year

The Ministry of Education, under the direction of the government, has unveiled a plan to introduce laptops as a replacement for traditional textbooks in Senior High Schools nationwide.

This initiative, announced by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during the 60th Anniversary celebration of Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Senior High School, aims to enhance teaching and learning by equipping students with digital resources.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the laptops will come preloaded with textbooks and other relevant educational materials, ensuring that students have access to a comprehensive range of resources during their lessons.

The implementation of this program is scheduled to take place before the end of 2023.

“If this country must move forward in the right direction, we must invest in education which is the only platform for preparing nation builders for tomorrow.

“The Minister for Education has also assured me that this year, we’ll start the replacement textbooks with laptops that have textbooks embedded in Senior high Schools,” he said on Saturday.

This new initiative comes after the government launched the One-teacher One-laptop project on Friday, September 3, 2021.

The programme was meant to give Senior High School teachers modern materials to facilitate teaching and learning and as of December 11, 2021, Ghana Education Service reported that 80% of laptops meant for teachers had been distributed.

  • John Boadu defends party leadership supporting candidates

John Boadu defends party leadership supporting candidates

Former General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party, John Boadu, has defended the practice of party leaders publicly declaring their support for their preferred candidate in the upcoming presidential primaries.

Mr Boadu refuted claims made by some social commentators that such actions are detrimental to the party.

According to Boadu, there is nothing inherently wrong with a leader expressing their support for a particular candidate as long as they are not in violation of the party’s rules and regulations.

He emphasized that it is acceptable for leaders to openly declare their intentions regarding a candidate unless the party’s guidelines prohibit such endorsements.

Mr Boadu clarified that the only factor that may restrict leading members from publicly supporting a candidate is the party’s specific rules and regulations.

“If the person is a leader and the rules and regulations don’t prevent him from campaigning for one person or the other and his campaign doesn’t bring divisions but rather only supporting his candidate, what is wrong?”, he questioned while making his submissions on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ morning show.

He found it hypocritical to condemn this trend where executives or Ministers among other party leaders show the party supporters who he or she hopes to win the primaries.

“Sometimes, we must be brutally frank and just also clear some of this hypocrisy going on. You see the Members of Parliament; all the candidates who are contesting worth their sort have gone to them one by one seeking their support,” he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi.

Spanish outlet Marca reports that the much-anticipated transfer of Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid will be officially announced next week.

The 19-year-old English talent has reportedly reached an agreement on personal terms for a six-year contract with Los Blancos.

While Bellingham is currently working to regain fitness for Borussia Dortmund’s crucial final-day match against Mainz, which could secure the club their first Bundesliga title in 11 years, his future has remained undisclosed.

However, it is believed that a deal starting at £87 million has been pre-arranged between Dortmund and Madrid for some time.

Carlo Ancelotti has been kept informed about the ongoing negotiations, and all preparations have been made for the Spanish giants to unveil their newest signing in the upcoming days.

Marca further suggests that the talented midfielder, who impressed with the England national team during the Qatar World Cup last winter, had received more lucrative financial offers from other clubs.

However, Bellingham is said to have made his desire to join the 14-time European champions clear from an early stage.

Premier League giants Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City had all been previously linked with moves for the teenage sensation.

53 Burkinabès repatriated by Bole Immigration Service

The Bole Sector Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has conducted a repatriation exercise for a large group of Fulani families from Burkina Faso who entered Ghana through an unauthorized route in the Hamile area of the Upper West Region.

The families, including men, women, and children, were escorted by the Immigration Service to the Hamile border post in the Upper West Region and subsequently returned to their country of origin, Burkina Faso.

Upon entering through the unapproved routes, the Fulani families boarded Yutong buses and arrived in Mankuma, located in the Bole District, with the intention of settling there.

However, alarmed residents raised concerns about their presence and resisted their offloading on May 25, 2023. In response, the Fulani families reboarded the buses, intending to continue their journey to the southern part of Ghana.

The vigilant Bole Sector Command of the Immigration Service, known for their diligent border protection efforts, intercepted the Fulani families at the Wakawaka Inland Immigration Checkpoint in the Bole District.

Among the travelers were 11 adult males, 10 adult females, and 32 children. They were subsequently escorted to the office of the Bole Sector Immigration Service Command for further questioning and eventual repatriation under the supervision of Immigration Officers.

Investigations carried out by local radio station Nkilgi FM in Bole revealed that the Fulani villages in Burkina Faso had been targeted by members of the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), a community vigilante group tasked with combating violent extremists who currently occupy a significant portion of the country.

The vigilante group has accused the Fulani community of collaborating with these extremists, leading to their attempts to seek refuge in Ghana.

I’ve stopped pursuing GNPC-PetroSA deal – Freddie Blay

The Board Chairman of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Freddie Blay, has revealed that he has discontinued his efforts to propose an equal split of the interest held by GNPC’s subsidiary, Jubilee Oil Holdings Ltd, to PetroSA.

Blay stated that this decision was made in response to a directive issued by the Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh.

“As I talk to you now, I have ceased and I have desisted in accordance and with directives of my supervising minister,” he said in an interview with JoyNews on Saturday, May 26.

He refuted any allegations of misconduct in relation to his offer of interest in Ghana’s oil fields to a South African oil company while asserting that he acted in the best interest of the country.

He maintained that his decision was a result of careful consideration and exercised good judgment throughout the process hence sees no justification for calls demanding his resignation.

“Possibly, I could be fired, but I don’t see any reason why they are saying I should resign about this issue. I have done nothing wrong.

“I have observed my conscience and I thought I was protecting the interest of the country, and I am convinced about it and if others think otherwise, and if those who appointed me are saying otherwise, then so be it,” he said in an interview with Citi FM on Tuesday, May 23.

Already, some 29 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have also demanded the removal of the two.

The CSOs, made up of the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana (COPEC) and 26 others, say the two men have “become a threat to Ghana’s interest in the petroleum sector.”

In a statement endorsed by representatives from all 29 CSOs and sighted by JoyNews, the coalition argued that a country being micromanaged by the IMF cannot be seen to be engaging in fiscal recklessness.

The group is also demanding complete information on the AFC transaction and the actual amount that would constitute petroleum cost and the immediate closure of the Aker PoD from the Petroleum Commission and Government.”

The Ghana Police Service has provided an assurance that it will soon release the full findings of the investigations into the shooting and killing of a 20-year-old man by a police officer in Wa, the capital of the Upper West region.

During a visit to the family of the deceased on Friday, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, expressed his condolences and pledged to make the investigation results public.

Accompanied by other high-ranking police officials, the IGP granted the family until mid-June of this year to disclose the outcome of the investigations.

The victim, identified as Abubakari Shahid, was an Arabic student who was allegedly shot and killed by the police on March 9.

The police suspected him of being an armed robber, a claim that was fiercely rejected by aggrieved family members.

They staged protests at the Upper West Regional Police Headquarters and the Regional Coordinating Council, demanding an apology and a thorough investigation into the incident.

Responding promptly, the IGP dispatched a delegation to console the bereaved family and assure them that the matter was being thoroughly investigated. The visit by IGP Dampare occurred nearly three months after the tragic incident took place.

The commitment by the Ghana Police Service to disclose the investigation findings is an important step toward transparency and accountability.

It is hoped that the release of the results will provide clarity and closure for the grieving family and contribute to maintaining trust between the police and the community.

Last week’s thrilling 3-3 draw against Liverpool in their last home game of the season secured Ward’s side a fifth-place finish in the table.

Villa became the first side outside the WSL’s top four to register 10 league wins in a season and Ward, nominated for the manager of the season award, also won the WSL’s manager of the month award on three occasions.

JUSAG refuses to call off strike, demand payment plan

The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has stated that the approval of their proposed salary structure and the communication of a payment plan would be sufficient for them to halt their ongoing nationwide strike.

This comes in response to an appeal made by the Judicial Service to JUSAG, urging them to end the strike.

In a press release issued on May 25, 2023, the management of the Judicial Service invited the executives of JUSAG for a meeting scheduled to take place on Wednesday, May 31. The purpose of the meeting is to address the concerns raised by the striking group.

During an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Abdulai Yakubu, the General Secretary of JUSAG, acknowledged the appeal made by the Judicial Service. However, he emphasized that they would not reconsider their decision to strike until a concrete payment plan is communicated to them.

“We respect the call by the Judicial Secretary to meet, and we are highly appreciative of the intervention that is coming from the management. However, the meeting that has been called is a work in progress and not an end to meeting our demand. So we will wait to get to the meeting before we make a decision,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice nominee, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, during her vetting on Friday, May 26, said processes are ongoing to address the concerns of JUSAG.

Justice delivery is in limbo as the industrial action by JUSAG over salary increase and payment of arrears since January 2023 continues to bite harder.

  • NDC MPs refuse to vote on CJ nominee, demand document on Gyakye Quayson’s ruling

NDC MPs refuse to vote on CJ nominee, demand document on Gyakye Quayson’s ruling

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has made a request for the disclosure of the details regarding the judgement on James Gyakye Quayson, the former Assin North MP.

They have stipulated that these details must be made available by June 7th before they can proceed with voting on the president’s Chief Justice nominee, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Following the Supreme Court Justice’s vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament, the Caucus refrained from casting a vote on the nominee.

Their decision was prompted by the absence of access to the complete judgement, which they believe is necessary to make an informed determination.

The Supreme Court in its recent ruling on the dual citizenship case before it directed Parliament to expunge the name of embattled Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson.

While the possibility of a second vetting session looms, the Committee’s chairman, Joseph Osei-Owusu, has announced that there will be no such session. However, the Minority Caucus remains resolute in their demand to review the entire judgement before reaching a conclusion.

The Minority Chief Whip in a press release indicated that the Minority expects the cooperation of the Majority in its request to bring closure to the vetting.

    Below is the full release

The Minority Members on the Appointments Committee of Parliament did not vote on the President’s nominee for the position of Chief Justice today due to the unavailability of the reasoned judgement of the Supreme Court in the matter of Hon. James Gyakye Quayson

It is important to state that the Appointments Committee not long ago in 2019 vetted and approved this same nominee as a justice of the Supreme Court. However, it was imperative for Members of The Minority on the Committee to evaluate the decisions of the nominee on all other cases, including the James Gyakye Quayson case since the vetting in 2019.

We successfully evaluated the nominee on all relevant criteria except the outstanding matter of James Gyakye Quayson which would enable us to come to a decision. We expect the reasoned Judgement of the court on this matter by 7 June, 2023 to finalise our decision

We have duly communicated our challenge to our colleagues on the Majority side and expect their cooperation.

Gender Ministry reaches out to stakeholders to curb human trafficking

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection’s Human Trafficking Secretariat, in partnership with various organizations, has taken steps to involve judges in the battle against human trafficking.

In collaboration with the Judicial Training Institute and with the assistance of Expertise France, a two-day workshop was organized to provide selected judges with sensitization and orientation on the issue.

The aim of this initiative is to enhance their understanding of human trafficking and equip them with the necessary knowledge and tools to effectively address cases related to this heinous crime.

During the workshop, Mrs. Francisca Oteng-Mensah, the Deputy Gender Minister, emphasized that Ghana serves as a source, transit point, and destination for human trafficking. Therefore, it is crucial for all stakeholders to work together to put an end to all forms of exploitation associated with this grave issue.

‘‘Let me reinterpret this adage; if you spare the rod, you spoil a child,’ to reflect the fact that, if we identify the offenders without punishing them at the end of the day,” she stated.

Mrs Oteng-Mensah said so far with collaboration with stakeholders, over 375 law enforcement officers had been trained from 2022 to 2023 through the Expertise France Project on Human Trafficking and Irregular Migration.

Gender Ministry and partners engage judges against human trafficking

The officers are from the Ghana Police, Immigration Service, Customs officers and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

She said there had also been the training of trainers for 80 law enforcement officers to enhance their capacities to train their colleagues as well as capacity building for 140 Civil Aviation Officers on victim identification and counter-trafficking activities.

The Deputy Minister said 70 judges had been sensitised in human trafficking and irregular migration in the Northern and Southern sectors of the country.

She stated that 100 cocoa cooperatives officers’ capacities were built on understanding human trafficking trends, child labour and forced labour indicators.

‘‘We have to look at the financial and other material gains traffickers make from the exploitation of their victims. We can disrupt their activity through restraining and freezing their assets under the EOCO laws at an early stage of the investigation,’’ Mrs Oteng-Mensah said.

For human trafficking, the Deputy Minister said, it included the power to seize and forfeit land, vehicles, and buildings, which may had been used to traffic victims.

She expressed worry about the current trend of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and crime involving the Q Net and the level of exploitation being done in the area and appealed for it to be investigated.

Dr Afisah Zacharia, Chief Director, Gender Ministry, in a speech read on her behalf by Ms Abena Annobea Asare, Head of Human Trafficking Secretariat, said the workshop was to provide judges a basic understanding on the issues of human trafficking and irregular migration.

She said it was also to enable them to manage traumatised trafficking victims or witnesses in the courtroom, and to discuss issues related to sentencing which was sometimes not in accordance with the statutory provisions and guidance in the Human Trafficking Act.

Dr Zakaria said the training was necessitated by the global sales of ammunition, currently, the largest criminal trade followed by human trafficking which called for stakeholders, including judges help eradicate human trafficking.

The Project Manager of Expertise France, Mr Serge Akpalou said human trafficking was a global phenomenon that took various forms, such as sexual exploitation, forced labour or services and servitude or the removal of organs in its extreme cases.

He said it had recently become more pronounced due to the health and current economic crisis that had heightened the vulnerabilities of people who were already fragile.

Every year, Mr Akpalou said, according to the Global Financial Integrity Transnational Crime rating, human trafficking generated approximately $150.2 billion and was the second most widespread form of trafficking in the world, after drug trafficking.

The Project Manager said 2.5 million people, mainly women and children, annually fell under the influence of traffickers, and Ghana was no exception.

He underscored the need for concerted, united and coordinated actions between agencies and especially between neighbouring countries for an effective fight against the canker.

Mabel Ahele, Deputy Director of the Judicial Training Institute (JTI), said according to reports received, the previous sensitisation sessions in Kumasi and Tema were successful.

She said the judges received and shared their experiences, limitations and challenges in applying the law, especially regarding dealing with victims of trafficking.

‘‘I pray that this sensitization will follow in the same vein. Let’s bring to light the issues bothering on victims of trafficking in our courtrooms, share best practices and discuss very effective ways of tackling the issues so that victims are not re-traumatised and stakeholders develop confidence in our judicial decisions and judgments,” Madam Ahele stated.

National Cathedral Board of Trustees contract Deloitte to probe corruption claims

To ensure that the National Cathedral Project is carried out without any interference and public criticism, the Board of Trustees have contracted an auditing firm, Deloitte to investigate claims of financial embezzlement and corruption.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana, Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyinah, made this known during an interview on Okay FM on Friday, May 27, 2023.

He was responding to some claims made by Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa over the construction of the national cathedral.

Mr Ablakwa, in his latest exposé on the National Cathedral, alleged that the American consultant to the National Cathedral project gave an official address that leads to a warehouse.

He said that when he visited the facility during his trip, he saw no offices but rather: “a ramshackle warehouse with the inscription: Churchill Coffee Company, Wholesale Division.”

The MP also said that Eric Okyere Darko, a member of the legal team of Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, was listed as a trustee on the Ghana National Cathedral in Washington DC registration documents in the United States.

The MP stated in his social media post that per his checks, the project’s registration details in Ghana differed from what he got from that of the US.

Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyinah who is concerned about the allegations made refuted the claims stating that “the things people are saying are not the truth.”

According to him, as part of efforts to prove their innocence, they have subjected themselves and activities to auditing.

“Because we the trustees have not seen any corruption going on with the project… we have now contracted a renowned editing firm, Deloitte, to look into our books, so we are not afraid of anything.

“But what we are urging is that we have laws in this country, and if something is not going well, you have to apply the laws. So that if someone has truly embezzled monies meant for the project, the person will be arrested and prosecuted,” he is quoted to have said by Ghanaweb.

He held the assertion that Mr Ablakwa is riding on his allegations against the national cathedral for popularity.

“If something is truly going on, you don’t just publish them just to become popular. These issues should not be used for a popularity contest, channel them through legal means,” he said.

Meanwhile, the clergy is hopeful the National Cathedral of Ghana, when completed, would become the face of Christianity in Africa. Currently, work on the project has been halted due to lack of funds.

Two kill man at Nkawie for allegedly stealing GHS1,000

The police are currently in pursuit of two individuals accused of assaulting a man and causing his death after accusing him of stealing GHS1,000.

Reportedly, Kofi Naasei and Kofi Ase stormed the residence of the now-deceased Akwasi Kwaa, 32, at around 2 am. They confronted him with allegations of theft and proceeded to tie him to a metal lights pole.

They physically assaulted him and then dragged him to Akataninse, where the beatings continued until he succumbed to his injuries.

Despite pleas from the deceased’s sister, Maame Yaa Aso, urging the assailants to hand over the suspect to the police, their demands were ignored. Kofi Ase even threatened that they would kill him, justifying their actions by labelling him a thief.

An official complaint was filed, leading the police to Akataninse, where they discovered the lifeless body of the deceased lying face-down. The body had a blue nylon rope tied around the neck and shoulder, with an orange T-shirt hanging from the neck, and a plastic bottle nearby.

The body, bearing multiple wounds, was then transported to Afari Community Hospital and subsequently deposited at the morgue for autopsy.

Following the heinous act, all the culprits fled the town. However, the Nkawie police have assured that they are actively working to apprehend the suspects, ensuring they face the full consequences of the law.

Akufo-Addo jabs Mahama, “naysayers” after commissioning Elmina Fishing Harbour

During the commissioning of the Elmina Fishing Harbour on Friday, May 26, 2023, President Akufo-Addo used the occasion to subtly criticize former President John Dramani Mahama.

In his speech, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the successful completion of the Elmina Fishing Port while subtly rebuking Mahama’s previous skeptical comments.

Speaking to the gathered crowd in Elmina, he expressed gratitude to the people for entrusting his government with the task of delivering the project. He recalled the groundbreaking ceremony that took place on August 20, 2020, and thanked the residents for disregarding negative voices.

In particular, he made reference to Mahama’s visit to Elmina four months later, where he disparagingly referred to the project as a “sakawa fishing harbor” and asserted that it would never come to fruition.

“I thank the people of Elmina for trusting the Akufo-Addo government to deliver this project, whose sod I cut on 20th August 2020, and I thank them for not listening to the naysayers. I remember that, after cutting the sod, the former President, John Dramani Mahama, the perennial NDC presidential candidate, came to Elmina four (4) months later, in December, and described the fishing harbour as ‘a sakawa fishing harbour’. He was emphatic in his statements that the construction of the Elmina Harbour would never materialise,” the president said.

With a touch of satisfaction, President Akufo-Addo reminded everyone that Mahama is not God, and he expressed joy that both Mahama and the naysayers are alive to witness the commissioning of the Elmina Fishing Port.

“It is just as well that he is not God, and I am equally happy that he, together with all the naysayers, are alive today to see President Akufo-Addo commissioning the Elmina Fishing Port,” he stated.

The president acknowledged the significance of the Elmina Fishing Port, which now joins the existing fishing ports in Tema and Sekondi-Takoradi. He also mentioned the ongoing works on the Jamestown Fishing Port, which, once completed, will bring the total number of fishing ports in the country to four.

President Akufo-Addo assured the audience that his government remains committed to supporting the growth of the fishing industry by pursuing programs and initiatives that enhance its development.

The commissioning of the Elmina Fishing Harbour marks a major milestone in Ghana’s fishing sector.

  • Birth certificate does not prove you are Ghanaian, it is just a document – Justice Torkornoo

Birth certificate does not prove you are Ghanaian, it is just a document – Justice Torkornoo

On Friday, May 26, Chief Justice nominee Justice Gertrude Torkornoo reaffirmed the stance of the Supreme Court regarding birth certificates and citizenship.

She emphasized that a birth certificate is not considered proof of citizenship but rather a documentation of one’s place of birth while engaging Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

Justice Torkornoo clarified that the information provided on a birth certificate is not verifiable.

She further explained that factors such as lineage, the identity of one’s parents, and their relationship play a crucial role in determining citizenship.

While acknowledging that a birth certificate is a requirement to indicate place of birth, Justice Torkornoo emphasized that it does not establish nationality.

The distinction between birth certificates and citizenship underscores the importance of considering multiple factors in determining one’s legal status.

“Citizenship is a matter of law, nationality is a matter of law. In certain jurisdictions, being born in that place makes you a citizen of that country, [but] in our country, being born in Ghana doesn’t make you a citizen of Ghana.

“It is your relationship with your mother, it is your mother’s identity, your father’s identity, it is your lineage that determines your citizenship. So that form [birth certificate] is just an international requirement, we must know where everyone is born. But beyond that, your nationality is derived from that form, the evidence on that form.”

The Supreme Court first ruled that birth certificates cannot be proof of citizenship.

“A birth certificate is not a form of identification. It does not establish the identity of the bearer. Nor does it link the holder with the information on the certificate. Quite obviously, it provides no evidence of citizenship,” the Supreme Court verdict said in part.

The ruling was in the matter of the NDC and another vs the Attorney General.

The plaintiffs were seeking to expand the required documents Ghanaians can use to obtain a voter’s ID, one of them asking for birth certificates to be included.

But the Supreme Court said a birth certificate does not satisfy the requirements of Article 42 of the Constitution.

“In fact, as a form of Identification, it is worse than the NHIA card which was held to be unconstitutional as evidence of identification of a person who applies for registration as a voter,” the court said.

The intercepted consignment which was destined for the U.K were detected by officers of the Commission at the scanning room as part of their routine duties at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) Cargo Terminal.

Meanwhile, NACOC has assured the public that it is committed to collaborating with all relevant institutions in minimising the drug trafficking threat to the country.

“The Commission would like to use this medium to remind the general public that the possession and transportation of illicit drugs without lawful authorization is illegal and punishable under sections 40 (1) and 41 (1) of Act 1019 of the Narcotics Control Commission Act 2020,” it added in its statement signed by Francis Opoku Amoah, Acting Director, Public Affairs and International Relations Department.

More than 500 Kumasi Technical Institute students suspended over misconduct

More than 500 students at the Kumasi Technical Institute in the Ashanti Region have been sent home due to their misconduct and violation of school rules.

On May 17, the students, who were all in the boarding house, reportedly engaged in a rampage that resulted in damage to school properties. School authorities have taken action to maintain discipline but have not provided further details on the incident.

The authorities have filed an official report with the Technical and Vocational Education Training Directorate regarding the students’ behavior, seeking appropriate action.

It has been discovered that the affected students failed to attend a general assembly parade, where the authorities conducted a roll call on Friday. Consequently, the students were instructed to pack their belongings and vacate the dormitories. They will face the school’s disciplinary committee upon their recall.

The authorities are scheduled to meet with the parents of the affected students to provide them with an update on the situation.

During a visit by Citi News, most of the affected students had already left the school, while others were in the process of packing their belongings.

The Manhyia Divisional Command dispatched police officers to the school, and the Police Commander addressed the remaining students, emphasizing the importance of obeying the law.

Justice Torkornoo pledges to work with the law on LGBTQ+ matters

Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, the nominee for Chief Justice, has affirmed that her religious beliefs will not interfere with her professional duties as a justice of the law.

She emphasized that she will apply the principles outlined by the law when addressing matters concerning the LGBTQ+ community.

During her vetting with the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday, May 2023, Justice Torkornoo drew extensively from the Bible to support her religious beliefs, which are rooted in the Christian faith.

Her articulate references to scripture garnered admiration from the interviewers.

Given her strong religious foundation, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Osei Owusu, posed a direct question about her stance on the contentious issue of LGBTQ+. He inquired about the position she would take when confronted with a conflict between her religious faith and the law.

“As a Christian and a lawyer, having indicated to us in a short while how you’ve managed these two, what will be your professional legal position and your faith position on the matter of LGBTQ and the position of the law?” Joe Osei Owusu asked.

And Justice Torkornoo’s answer was straightforward. “I’ve made it very clear that when I walk into court, all my thoughts are soaked in the law,” she said, eliciting explanations from the chairman that she agrees to implement the law as passed by parliament.

Currently before Parliament, the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021 seeks to criminalize the promotion, advocacy, funding, and acts of homosexuality in Ghana. This bill, which is a private member’s bill, was presented to Speaker Alban Bagbin on June 29, 2021.

During her vetting, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo made it clear that she is bound to uphold the law regarding LGBTQ+ matters.

If approved by the committee, she will assume the role of Chief Justice, succeeding Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah, who retired on May 24 after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 for justices of the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

Mozambique families displaced over invasion by crocodiles, others

In central Mozambique, more than 1,000 families are facing displacement due to ongoing attacks by wild animals.

The head of the local administration in Marromeu district, Sofala province, has stated that the government plans to relocate approximately 1,500 families who are at risk from these attacks.

Henriqueta de Rosário, the local official, mentioned that three individuals have already lost their lives in wildlife attacks during the first quarter of this year.

Buffaloes from the Marromeu Special Reserve, located in the Zambezi river delta, have encroached upon residential areas, prompting the local population to seek safety on nearby river islands.

Unfortunately, even as they seek refuge on these islands, the displaced families now face the added threat of crocodile attacks. The situation requires urgent attention to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected communities.

“The conflict between man and wildlife is a growing reality” said Ms Rosário, adding that many people were threatened.

She said that at least 400 people had already signed up for a voluntary resettlement initiative to leave the area.

  • Supreme Court throws out landmark election case involving Kashim Shettima

Supreme Court throws out landmark election case involving Kashim Shettima

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has dismissed a case that sought to disqualify Vice-President-elect Kashim Shettima as the candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the country’s general election.

Had the case proceeded, it could have had significant implications for the candidacy and eventual victory of President-elect Bola Tinubu, as they ran on a joint ticket.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) filed the suit in July of the previous year, arguing that Mr. Shettima’s nomination as Mr. Tinubu’s running mate violated the Nigerian constitution.

They contended that Mr. Shettima’s simultaneous nomination to contest the positions of both vice president and the Borno central senatorial seat was contrary to the law.

However, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the case lacked merit. The court cited evidence that Mr. Shettima had eventually withdrawn his nomination for the senatorial seat, thus resolving the constitutional concern raised by the opposition party.

There had been palpable fear and anxiety before the landmark judgement but the justices also decided that the PDP lacked the power to put forward the lawsuit since it is not a member of the APC.

Justice Adamu Jauro, who delivered the lead judgment, noted that the PDP was meddling in the internal affairs of another party and ordered it to pay a fine of around $4,300 (£3,500).

The Supreme Court ruling has now put the issue to rest and seemingly given a judicial seal of approval for the inauguration of President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President-elect Kashim Shettima.

They are due to be sworn in on 29 May when outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari leaves office after completing a two terms.

However, lawsuits by major opposition parties challenging Mr Tinubu’s election victory are still ongoing at the election petitions tribunal, where hearings will begin on 30 May, a day after Mr Tinubu is sworn in.

Foad Dabiri quits Twitter after DeSantis launch glitches

Following technical glitches during the launch of Ron DeSantis’ US presidential campaign on Twitter, Foad Dabiri, an engineering chief at the company, has announced his departure.

In a tweet, Dabiri stated, “After almost four incredible years at Twitter, I decided to leave the nest yesterday.”

During the DeSantis campaign event, a Twitter livestream encountered malfunctions, causing disruptions. It is unclear whether Dabiri’s departure is directly linked to this incident or if there are other reasons behind his decision.

Despite a BBC request for comment, Dabiri has not provided further details, and Twitter has not issued a statement regarding his exit.

Dabiri, who served as the engineering lead for Twitter’s Growth organization, acknowledged experiencing two distinct eras at the company—before and after its acquisition by billionaire Elon Musk last year.

In another post, Mr Dabiri said the transition into Twitter’s “2.0” was “massive and rapid”.

He added: “To say it was challenging at the outset would be an understatement.”

Florida governor Ron DeSantis speaks in Iowa.
Image caption,Mr DeSantis’ entry into the 2024 race for the White House had been long anticipated

However, Mr Dabiri said: “Working with @elonmusk has been highly educational, and it was enlightening to see how his principles and vision are shaping the future of this company.”

Issues with a Twitter livestream meant that an event to launch Mr Desantis’ bid for the Republican presidential nomination got under way 20 minutes late.

By the time Wednesday evening’s Twitter talk had begun in earnest, hundreds of thousands of Twitter users had left the platform.

The Florida governor is viewed as former President Donald Trump’s chief rival to be their party’s candidate in the 2024 general election.

Mr Musk, who also runs car maker Tesla and rocket firm SpaceX, bought Twitter for $44bn (£35.4bn) in October.

Speaking to the BBC last month, he said that cutting the workforce from just under 8,000 people at the time he bought the firm to about 1,500 had not been easy.

Since Mr Musk took the reins at Twitter, he has laid off thousands of employees, including engineers responsible for the site’s operations and technical troubleshooting.

Mr DeSantis’ team worked quickly to spin the technical stumbles, writing on Twitter that the announcement had broken “the internet with so much excitement”, and posting a link to the campaign website.

His press secretary Bryan Griffin claimed the online event had raised $1m in an hour.

At one point, the Twitter event drew more than 600,000 listeners, according to Reuters news agency figures, but by its conclusion, there were fewer than 300,000.

Once the livestream began, Mr DeSantis turned the conversation to his conservative credentials and touted his handling of the Covid-19 crisis in his state – an anti-lockdown approach applauded by many Republicans.

Court jails businessman who left wife in Ghana to marry another in US

Reports indicate that a businessman named Emmanuel Kodjo Narh has been sentenced to a 12-month jail term for bigamy by an Accra Circuit Court.

Justice Christina Cann, who presided over the case, stated that the accused person had initially been cleared of charges of threats to harm until the prosecution successfully established the crime of bigamy.

The report reveals that the complainant, a nurse residing in the USA and a native of Odumase Krobo, had a valid marriage with Narh, while he was also legally married to another woman in Ghana.

The prosecution presented the sequence of events, explaining that the complainant, who was abroad in the USA in June 2015, received a call from her property manager in Ghana informing her about a road construction near her property. The property manager provided the complainant with several phone numbers, including Narh’s, to address the issue. Narh answered the call and promised to handle the problem.

According to the report, Narh and the complainant developed a friendship from their initial interaction, with Narh calling her daily to check up on her. In August 2015, Narh proposed to the complainant, but she declined, expressing her desire to get to know him in person first. She planned to visit Ghana to discuss the proposal.

The prosecution continued, stating that the complainant and Narh met for the first time on October 26, 2015, when she arrived at the airport. On October 28, 2015, Narh proposed to her with a ring, introduced her to his family, and showed her some of his workers.

During their engagement, the complainant discovered another marriage certificate dated October 4, 2008, between Narh and another woman. It was later revealed that Narh had children with two other women without being married to them. The complainant, who was a divorcee, decided to end the marriage upon returning to the USA.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to the arrest of Narh’s first wife. Narh claimed that both women were his wives. The complainant sought to dissolve the fraudulent marriage upon her return to the USA.

On June 3, 2019, the complainant received a threatening message from Narh through his son’s phone, stating, “We shall see, but this time, this is going to be a tribal war, I swear.”

The complainant lodged a petition with the director general of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) through her lawyer, which was subsequently referred to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) at the Police Headquarters in Accra.

The prosecution revealed that Narh was invited for questioning, during which he stated that the marriage between him and the complainant was a “planned thing” aimed at facilitating travel documents for his daughter to the USA.

  • UCC lecturer allegedly flies home from Germany using his Ghana card

UCC lecturer allegedly flies home from Germany using his Ghana card

Dr. Emmanuel Acheampong, a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), has shared an incident where the Ghana card came to his rescue, preventing him from missing his flight from Germany to Ghana after misplacing his passport.

During an interview on Okay FM on Friday morning, Dr. Acheampong upon arrival at the airport in Hamburg, he realized that he had inadvertently left his passport at home.

But for the Ghana card, he was able to resolve the challenge and make his way back home.

“Yesterday I was coming from Europe to Ghana. At the airport, I joined the queue to check in and when it got to my turn to be processed, I strangely could not find my passport. I checked all my bags and I could not find my passport so I called home and I was told I had left my passport at home,” Dr Acheampong told Okay FM.

“I had one option, which was to rebook the flight and that would cost me extra money. Then I remembered that some time ago, there were media reports that it is possible for one to travel to Ghana on a Ghana card, and I had my Ghana card in my purse.”

“So I approached the airline, Air France and showed my Ghanacard to them to prove that I am a Ghanaian and I had reason to travel to Ghana. Because the Ghanacard is machine-readable, they scanned and confirmed that I am a Ghanaian.”

“They also conferred with the Immigration officials at the airport, but unfortunately for me, by the time they completed these processes, I missed that particular Airfrance flight, but I was rebooked on KLM because of the alliance between Air France and KLM. So I travelled to Ghana from Hamburg through Amsterdam on my Ghana card,” he added.

He noted that confirming his identity was not a challenge as he had linked his Ghana card to his passport and driver’s license.

“Interestingly, because I had linked my passport and my driver’s license to the Ghanacard, they were able to see all that when they scanned it that I am indeed a Ghanaian citizen.”

“The good thing is that the Ghanacard is machine readable so you can insert it into any readable machine and every piece of information on it will show, and that’s exactly what the airline did without my passport.

“And when I got to Ghana, I realised that Ghana Immigration Service had a special desk which processed holders of Ghanacard. So I didn’t go through the normal Immigration channel where you had to show your passport. I went through the special desk. I didn’t know something like that existed.”

Dr. Acheampong admitted that until his personal experience, he did not believe the Ghanacard could be used to travel.

“Honestly I was surprised I could use the Ghanacard to travel. Some months ago when reports emerged that the Ghanacard could be used as a travel document, many people didn’t believe it. Honestly, I also didn’t believe it,” he admitted.

“But I was caught up yesterday because if I lost that flight, I would have spent some money to rebook it so I said no, let me try it because the government has announced that the Ghanacard could be used to travel. I tried it and thankfully it worked. It saved me time and money, and I am happy to be back home.”

He described the Ghanacard as a very good initiative and urged Ghanaians to embrace it, as well as other digitization efforts in the country by the government.

“The Ghanacard is a very good initiative. Not only the Ghanacard, but also efforts to digitise many aspects of our economy and national life is very important. Wherever you go, before any office or government would engage you, you’ll first have to be identified as the real person.”

“It is a good effort and Ghanaians should embrace it. My own experience shows that some of these initiatives can help, especially in situations such as I found myself in.”

His assertion if confirmed to be true, goes to confirm that the Ghana card is recognized as an electronic passport in 197 countries, per Vice President Dr Bawumia who announced preparations in 2021.

“The Ghana card will be recognized as an e-passport and can be read and verified in all [International Civil Aviation Organization] ICAO compliant borders (in 197 countries and 44,000 airports in the world). When this happens, holders of the Ghana card will be allowed to board any flight to Ghana.”

“Furthermore, the good news for diasporan Ghanaians is that when the Ghana Immigration Service is linked to the NIA architecture, diasporan Ghanaians who hold the Ghana card should not have to obtain visas to travel to Ghana,” he said on November 2, 2021.

  • I hope you won’t be a pushover – Minority leader to Justice Torkornoo

I hope you won’t be a pushover – Minority leader to Justice Torkornoo

Minority in Parliament, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has entreated Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to exhibit the virtue of independence and bravery should she be approved and subsequently sworn-in as Chief Justice.

During the vetting process of the Chief Justice nominee by Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Dr Ato Forson spoke against a pushover Chief Justice who would operate at the beck and call of persons in power.

The Member of Parliament for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam posed the question after Justice Gertrude Torkornoo drew his attention to the fact that she has a primary education at Ajumako.

“My lady, I noticed on your VC that you spent some time studying in Ajumako, my constituency.”

“Ajumako has always produced people with integrity and we have Ajumako values that are often instilled in us. That will mean that no one can push your over. I hope and pray that you still have those values that you will not be a pushover,” he requested.

He, however, noted that “the people of Ajumako are proud to see that someone can move to that level.”

In response, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo assured that she works with the values imbued in her that have brought her this far.

She paid respect to her parents, teachers, pastors and all have positively impacted throughout her life.

“My values have been produced by all that have made me. My parents, home, school, everywhere I have lived – my faith,” she said.

  • Judges are excluded from taking ex-gratia – Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

Judges are excluded from taking ex-gratia – Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

Chief Justice nominee, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, has indicated that the payment of ex-gratia to former government officials does not include those in the Judiciary.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Friday, May 26, 2023, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo explained that it is the doing of the law to ensure the independence of the Judiciary.

“We continue in office, we don’t leave office until you retire. We don’t have a cycle, and therefore, the discussion of ex-gratia is not applicable to us.

“This specific provision, where our names [judges] are mentioned, how our salaries are set under Article 71, it’s a committee, a presidential committee that does that work. And the framers of the Constitution thought that, that was the appropriate thing to keep us independent and we are not the only persons subject to it. It’s an entrenched provision and can only be changed by a very elaborate position.

“It’s an entrenched provision and can only be changed by a very elaborate position,” she however added.

Her submission on ex-gratia comes at a time when some Ghanaians have strengthened their calls for the removal of ex-gratia as Ghana battles an economic crisis.

Wading into the conversation, former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to cease the payment of ex-gratia to former government officers (Article 71 holders) in his next government.

Speaking at the University of Development Studies, Tamale on Monday, May 15, he asked Ghanaians to hold him to his promise.

“I am committed to operating an effective government with not more than sixty (60) ministers.

“These ministers together with other appointees of the government will not be entitled to ex-gratia payments after their tenure, as they will commit to that undertaking even before the necessary constitutional amendments, including a review of the controversial Article 71.”

But some citizens have come against the former statesman. They claim he has been a beneficiary of the ex-gratia payment regime.

According to former President Mahama, he has never received ex-gratia. He clarified that he receives monthly pension.

“My friend Nana Akomea. Really sad what politics can do to a fine mind! I don’t take ex-gratia. I receive a monthly pension,” he wrote on Twitter today.
