  • Messi emerged from Maradona’s shadow with World Cup triumph, Sacchi says

Arrigo Sacchi, who was Argentina’s runner-up in 1994, claims that Lionel Messi overcame the shadow cast by fellow Argentine ‘phenomenon’ Diego Maradona by bringing his nation to World Cup victory.

After putting on a string of talismanic performances in Qatar, where he scored seven goals and added three assists during a fairytale campaign, Messi won the World Cup Golden Ball.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner scored twice against France on Sunday in the dramatic championship match, and he also scored in the ensuing penalty shootout to become the first captain of the Albiceleste to win the cup since Maradona in 1986.

Sacchi, whose legendary Milan team competed against Maradona’s Napoli in the 1980s, declined to draw comparisons between the two legends of Argentina, but he was happy to see Messi emulate his countryman’s achievements.

“When Messi raised the World Cup to the sky, his eyes were wet with tears,” Sacchi, who led Italy to the 1994 final, wrote in La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I thought of Leo’s entire journey, of what he won with Barcelona, of his dribbling, of his goals, of his acrobatics, of the many Ballon d’Ors he placed on the bulletin board.

“Then, however, there was that sort of curse which he could not shrug off. Too often he was forced to play with the shadow of Maradona weighing on his shoulders.

“Too often they asked him what he could not give, and then he felt sad. He felt the responsibility to give happiness to an entire people and the fact of not succeeding in it pained him.

“Now all of Argentina is at his feet. I don’t feel like saying whether or not he has reached Maradona’s level.

“I don’t agree with these comparisons between champions who belong to different eras of football.

“What I know is that Maradona was a phenomenon, and I knew him well, and I know that Messi is too, albeit in a different way.”

  • Pele celebrates Messi, Argentina for World Cup victory

Pele, a legend of Brazil, has congratulated Argentina on their stunning World Cup victory and said Lionel Messi’s success was what “his trajectory deserved.”

Pele, who has recently been hospitalized, has been paying attention to the happenings at Qatar 2022 and stated that the late Diego Maradona would have enjoyed Argentina’s trophy victory.

The significant milestone for 35-year-old Messi means he now matches compatriot Maradona, who was the inspiration behind Argentina’s success in Mexico 86, by winning his first World Cup. In November 2020, at the age of 60, Maradona passed away.

“Congratulations Argentina! Certainly Diego is smiling now,” Pele wrote on Instagram.

Pele, 82, expressed sadness for Kylian Mbappe, who lost after scoring two penalties and a spectacular volley to clinch just the second hat-trick in a men’s World Cup final, following Geoff Hurst’s hat-trick for England against West Germany in 1966.

Following a Sunday 3-3 tie, Argentina won the trophy after a 4-2 victory in the penalties shootout, thanks to misses from Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni.

Before he and Mbappe, a teammate from Paris Saint-Germain, both scored a penalty to start the shootout, Messi scored twice in a memorable game.

Messi was awarded the Golden Ball for the second time as the tournament’s best player, and Mbappe took home the Golden Boot for leading scorer with eight goals.

Three-time World Cup winner Pele hailed Mbappe’s feat of hitting the back of the net four times, including the shoot-out, and he also offered praise to Morocco, who finished fourth after becoming Africa’s first World Cup semi-finalists.

“Today, football continues to tell its story, as always, in an enthralling way,” Pele said. “Messi winning his first World Cup, as his trajectory deserved.

“My dear friend, Mbappe, scoring four goals in a final. What a gift it was to watch this spectacle to the future of our sport.

“And I couldn’t fail to congratulate Morocco for the incredible campaign. It’s great to see Africa shine.”

  • We have provided public transport operators materials needed to reduce fares – GPRTU

Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Ibrahim Abass Moro, has debunked claims by public transport operators that the union has not furnished them with a communique announcing a 15.3% reduction in fares.

Transport fares were to be slashed by 15.3% today, December 19, but that has not been the case.

According to public transport operators, the GPRTU has not provided them with the list that displays the new fares.

Interacting with the Independent Ghana on Monday, Mr Abass Moro stated that the GPRTU has provided the operators the needed materials to effect the price reduction.

“They are kidding. Each time we increase lorry fares, how do we go about it. It is the same way that the reduction takes place. We have come out with a communique, communicated with all the unions. As usual, they also communicate to their members. Each time we increase lorry fares, the way we go about it is the same way.

“So if somebody is saying he is not aware, the person is not being (truthful),” he said.

On the way forward, he stated that ” let us keep educating everybody”.

Transport fares are being reduced due to a fall in the price of petroleum products at the pumps.

The decision was taken after discussions between the relevant stakeholders in the transportation sector who took into consideration the plight of drivers, commuters and the general public on current fares last week.

In a communique dated December 16, the Road Transport Operators advised all commercial transport operators (shared taxis, intra-city, intercity and haulage) to comply with the new fares and post same at their loading terminals.

  • ‘Trotro’ drivers deliberately fail to reduce transport fares

Public transport operators have flouted the Road Transport Operators’ directive to reduce fares by 15.3% effective today, December 19, 2022.

In a press statement following a series of engagements, the Roads Transport Operators announced that “we have resolved to reduce the existing transport fares by 15.3%” following the price reduction of petroleum products at the pumps.

The decision warranting this action was taken after discussions between the relevant stakeholders in the transportation sector who took into consideration the plight of drivers, commuters and the general public on current fares last week.

The Road Transport Operators also advised all commercial transport operators (shared taxis, intra-city, intercity and haulage) to comply with the new fares and post same at their loading terminals.

“We further request all operators, commuters and the general public to kindly cooperate for the successful implementation of the new fares,” the statement added.

However, public transport operators have failed to do so, attributing their inability to a said list yet to be presented by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).

Interacting with The Independent Ghana, Relations Officer of the Greater Accra Regional branch of the GPRTU, Abass Moro Ibrahim, debunked the claims made, stating that the public transport operators have been provided with the needed material to effect the price reduction.

He noted that it is a deliberate attempt by the drivers not to reduce transportation fares.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has called on traders and other industry players to reduce the prices of goods and services.

“I add my voice to those of GUTA, GRTCC and others, to appeal to manufacturers, traders and transport operators, that with the height of the cedi’s recent depreciation and increased prices of goods and services, to reduce their prices of goods and services now that the cedi is regaining much of its strength. I believe this is not only a fair request but also a just one,” he said during the Centenary Celebration of the Ga Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana on Sunday.

This is the first time in this year that transport fares will be reduced.

In 2022 alone, fares have been revised upwards four times; the first in February by 15%. In May, fares were increased by 20% and in October, by 19%.

November saw the imposition of over 30%, which left many Ghanaians wallowing in tears as they faced severe economic hardships.

It is expected that the reduction in transport fares will somehow alleviate some burden off Ghanaians.

Aside from fares being less expensive, the cost of goods and services is expected to decline since prices shot up as a result of an increase in transport fares last month.

Most, if not all production processes, require transportation, hence a change in transport fares which is caused by a hike or decrease in fuel prices, will affect the cost of goods and services.

  • Messi’s Argentina win 2022 World Cup final against France to prove ‘GOAT’ tag

Lionel Messi has led Argentina to World Cup glory after beating France on penalties on Sunday.

This proved to be one of the most thrilling climaxes in final history.

Argentina won 4-2 in the shootout after a spectacular game which developed into the much-anticipated confrontation between the 35-year-old maestro Messi and his France opposite number Kylian Mbappe, who scored a hat-trick – the first in a World Cup final since 1966 – but still ended up on the losing side.

Messi had given Argentina lead from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute following Ousmane Dembele’s foul on Angel Di Maria. It made him the first player in World Cup history to score in the group stage, last 16, quarter-final, semi-final and final of a single tournament.

He then contributed a delicate touch within a magnificent counter-attack that ended with Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister setting up Di Maria for the second 13 minutes later.

Argentina were untroubled until the closing stages, only for Mbappe to give France a lifeline from the penalty spot with nine minutes left – then restore equality with a magnificent volley moments later.

Messi bundled Argentina back in front in extra time, but Mbappe completed his treble from the spot two minutes from the end of a frantic, chaotic added spell.

And so it went to penalties, with the two greats opening the scoring. But Argentina and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved from Kingsley Coman, before Aurelian Tchouameni missed, leaving Gonzalo Montiel to win the World Cup.

Messi, a World Cup winner at last, collapsed to his knees in the centre circle and was engulfled by jubilant Argentina team-mates.

  • France’s World Cup fate in Lloris’ capable hands

Hugo Lloris will be essential to France’s ambitions of making World Cup history as they are just one victory away.

He will become the only player to have won the championship twice if Les Bleus overcome Argentina.

Only two other countries—Italy (1934 and 1938) and Brazil (1958 and 1962)—have accomplished the feat.

We examine how Lloris can help France win the championship as we get ready for the tantalizing final against Argentina.

    Mr Reliable

A reliable goalkeeper is a key component of any world-class side — and France have been set in this department since Lloris made his debut in 2008.

He was excellent at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, keeping three clean sheets and only conceding six goals in 540 minutes.

The 35-year-old has kept up those standards in Qatar, conceding only four times — though he may be disappointed to only have only kept one clean sheet.

Lloris’ experience — particularly of winning a World Cup final — will be invaluable for France as they seek to repeat the trick.

Hugo Lloris has been key to France's run to the World Cup final

    High praise

Before Lloris earned his record-equalling 142nd cap for Les Bleus in the World Cup last-16 clash against Poland, France manager Didier Deschamps heaped praise on his captain and compared him to the man whose record he was matching — Lilian Thuram.

He said: “Records are made to be broken.

“It’s the longevity of two exemplary players, two great professionals who have both kept themselves at a very, very high level.

“These records mean something. Some are more anecdotal than others, but this one speaks for itself.”

    Stepping up

Hugo Lloris has conceded four goals at the World Cup so far
Hugo Lloris has conceded four goals at the World Cup so far

France had to dig deep in both their quarter-final against England and their semi-final against Morocco — but managed to emerge victorious on both occasions.

They endured spells where they were forced to defend deep and Lloris was required to make some important saves to keep his side in the game.

Against England, the captain made an impressive six saves overall — a real sign that he can step up when required for his nation.

In the final, the stopper will almost certainly be called upon again as Lionel Messi looks to fire Argentina to victory.

    Error free

Lloris has been a reliable figure for most of his career but in recent seasons the veteran has earned a reputation for making unforced errors.

Despite an excellent tournament overall four years ago he made an unforgettable blunder in the final which cost his side a goal — thankfully for the Tottenham skipper, it did not impact the result.

In Qatar, however, the 35-year-old has not made a single error leading to a goal.

If Lloris can maintain his aura of steady calm for one more game, he could write himself into history as France’s greatest goalkeeper.

    Demands in possession

Hugo Lloris frequently looks to play the ball long
Hugo Lloris frequently looks to play the ball long

The biggest criticism of Lloris’ game is his ability on the ball and his lack of fluidity in possession.

The France captain has only completed 70 passes at the tournament so far, which works out at just 14 per 90 — low even for a goalkeeper.

His passing accuracy is also just 56.91%, which can likely be explained by the fact that he primarily sends his kicks long.

However, Dechamps’ style masks that weakness with France ranking 11th at the World Cup for passes attempted per match (521.17) — Les Bleus’ boss will hope Lloris is not found out on the ball in the final.

  • Messi on song but Alvarez is no backing singer

Even though Lionel Messi may be the star of the show, Julian Alvarez could be crucial for Argentina as they aim to win the World Cup.

Although Lionel Scaloni did not start the match with the Manchester City striker, his performances have made him an irreplaceable member of La Albiceleste.

In the final on Sunday, where Argentina will try to defeat France and win their third championship, his danger in the last third will be crucial.

In advance of the World Cup match, we examine the factors that have led to the 22-year-old becoming his country’s starting No. 9.

    Too good to ignore

Lautaro Martinez began the World Cup as Argentina’s first-choice centre forward.

The Inter Milan marksman has developed a fine relationship with Messi over the last few years and it made sense that he would continue playing that role in Qatar.

But sub-par performances against Saudi Arabia and Mexico saw Scaloni drop the 25-year-old in favour of Alvarez, who was impressing too much off the bench to be ignored.

The decision has paid off — the Calchin native has scored four goals in the 364 minutes he has played in Qatar.

Only the peerless Messi, with five strikes and three assists to his name, has contributed more to the cause.

    Putting Croatia to the sword

Argentina forward Julian Alvarez has been on form at the World Cup

Hard-running and intelligent, Alvarez is the perfect foil for Messi in the final third but he exploded in his own right during Argentina’s dominant 3-0 semi-final victory over Croatia.

The striker won the penalty that Messi converted in the 34th minute to give La Albiceleste the lead and then scored twice himself to put the result beyond doubt.

Given his previous goals at this World Cup came in must-win games against Poland and Australia, it is safe to say that the former River Plate prodigy has a taste for the big occasion.

Alvarez has certainly not looked out of place since forcing himself into the side despite having never previously started for La Albiceleste at a major tournament.

    Praised by Messi

Argentina forward Julian Alvarez often attacks the left side of the box
Argentina forward Julian Alvarez often attacks the left side of the box

Considered the greatest footballer of all time by many, Paris Saint-Germain talisman Messi has exacting standards and needs his colleagues to meet them.

That is what makes the 35-year-old’s comments when asked who aside from him deserved to be named Player of the Match after Argentina’s victory over Croatia so impressive.

He said: “Every player did very well but if I have to choose, I would give this award to Julian. He had an extraordinary game”.

    A boost for Manchester City

Alvarez’s excellent form could be a real boon to Manchester City as well as Argentina.

The Citizens are five points shy of current league leaders Arsenal ahead of the resumption of club football following the break for the World Cup — and a strikeforce of the Argentine and the on-fire Erling Haaland would strike fear into the hearts of many a Premier League defence.

The Argentine has impressed in his early form for City following his summer move from River but he only has 357 minutes of Premier League football to his name, scoring three goals.

Playing a key role in an Argentina side that could lift their first World Cup since the days of Diego Maradona could see him figure more prominently under Pep Guardiola.

    World Cup final role

Argentina forward Julian Alvarez has scored four goals at the World Cup
Argentina forward Julian Alvarez has scored four goals at the World Cup

Some of the greatest players in history have never played in a World Cup final — but Alvarez will do it at 22.

And he will play a key role, too. The centre forward’s selfless, hard-running style is the perfect counterbalance to Messi’s more relaxed approach.

But that does not mean that the City star sacrifices individual contribution in the final third — only Messi and Kylian Mbappe have outscored him in Qatar.

Nobody has been more accurate with their shooting than the youngster, who has hit the target with seven of his 10 shots (70%).

If a chance falls Alvarez’s way at Lusail Stadium on Sunday, he will be ready and waiting.

  • Southgate to remain England manager for Euro 2024

Gareth Southgate will remain in charge of England through Euro 2024, putting an end to rumors about his future following the Three Lions’ World Cup quarterfinal collapse.

After losing 2-1 to France in the round of eight, Southgate’s England team was eliminated from the Qatar 2022 tournament.

It had been widely assumed that Southgate would leave the position after guiding England to semi-final finishes in Russia 2018 and the Euro 2020 final.

The 52-year-old declared immediately following the France match that he would need some time to think about his options.

But the Football Association has now confirmed Southgate will remain in his post for the European Championship in Germany in 18 months’ time.

“We are delighted to confirm that Gareth Southgate is continuing as England manager and will lead our Euro 2024 campaign,” the FA said in a statement on Sunday.

“Gareth and [assistant manager] Steve Holland have always had our full support, and our planning for the Euros starts now.”

Southgate’s contract, which he signed last year, expires in December 2024.

England’s next match is in Euro 2024 qualifying in March, facing Italy in a repeat of the previous European Championship final.

Although Southgate heads into that qualification campaign still without major silverware, he has overseen more tournament wins than any other England manager.

  • Morocco showed they can go ‘toe to toe’ with international football’s elite, Regragui says

Placing fourth at the World Cup, Morocco proved they can compete with the best teams in world soccer, according to head coach Walid Regragui.

In the third-place play-off on Saturday, Croatia defeated Morocco 2-1 thanks to goals from Josko Gvardiol and Mislav Orsic, capping Morocco’s remarkable World Cup run.

They overcame heavyweights like Spain and Portugal before losing to France in the semifinals to become the first country from Africa to make it that far in the world’s premier football competition.

Regragui thinks that the Atlas Lions proved their claim to be regarded as one of the world’s best footballing nations, despite the fact that Morocco’s campaign ended in defeat.

“Tomorrow morning we will take stock, and realise we all made a fantastic achievement here,” Regragui told reporters at his post-match news conference.

“We played Croatia twice, one of the top three teams in the world. We played against Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium and Canada, that’s wonderful.

“We have an objective of winning the World Cup one day. Morocco showed we can go toe to toe with these teams. We are now one of the top four teams in the world.”

Asked if he would change anything about Morocco’s tournament, Regragui replied: “Honestly I would say nothing.

“We had 0.01 per cent chance of winning the tournament at the outset. We managed to get to the last four.

“We played some of the powerhouses of football. If you told me we’d get this far, number four in the world, I’d have accepted that straight away.

“We deserve respect. They fought until the end, showed hard graft. That’s football, some nations are stronger than us. France were, Croatia were tonight, but only slightly stronger.

“For 2026, if I’m still in charge, I’ll have more experience and maybe things will change, and in 2026 we will realise the achievement we’ve made in 2022.”

Morocco’s final match in Qatar saw a number of controversial officiating decisions, with the final whistle met by intense protests from Regragui’s players towards the referee.

Achraf Hakimi, Morocco’s star right-back, was reportedly involved in a row with FIFA president Gianni Infantino in the tunnel after the match.

It comes after the Royal Morocco Football Federation lodged a complaint to FIFA over referee Cesar Ramos’ performance during their semi-final defeat to France.

However, Regragui was keen not to focus too much on the referee’s display, while he defended his players’ behaviour after the game.

“When you lose you always get disappointed, upset,” Regragui stated. “My players are great competitors, I don’t think there was a lack of respect.

“We sometimes overreact at the end of games, it happens. We just weren’t at the level we’ve set.

“We focus on what we were lacking. We can’t hide behind the refereeing, that’s not the Moroccan way. We let the association deal with any official issues.”

  • Luis Suarez in negotiations over Cruz Azul move

Cruz Azul of Liga MX is interested in signing Luis Suarez, and the president of the Mexican team has confirmed that talks with the Uruguayan international are ongoing.

The seasoned attacker is currently looking for a new squad to play for in 2023 and beyond after his contract with his childhood club Nacional terminated.

Suarez has spent the majority of his career in Europe, but his return to Uruguay, where he helped his new team win the league for the first time in over ten years, implies he may stay west of the Atlantic.

Cruz Azul president Victor Velazquez confirmed rumors that they are considering a move to bring him on board for the Clausura 2023 season, which will begin on January 6.

“I don’t have any news for you yet, but we’ve been in negotiations,” he told AS. “Our intention is to bring Luis Suarez to Cruz Azul.

“We just need to be patient and look for one or two other reinforcements on top of that.”

Suarez would become one of the greatest names to enter Liga MX if he moved to Mexico; other veterans had traditionally preferred a move to MLS.

Suarez has won the La Liga five times in his career, four times with Barcelona and one time with Atletico Madrid. He has also won club awards with Ajax and Liverpool.

Although he didn’t score during Uruguay’s most recent World Cup campaign in Qatar 2022, he is their all-time leading goal scorer with 68 goals in 137 appearances. In 2011, he helped Uruguay win the Copa America.#

  • Allegri uncertain when Pogba will return for Juventus

Massimiliano Allegri, the head coach of Juventus, has said that he does not know when Paul Pogba will make his recovery.

After returning to Turin on a free transfer prior to the start of the season, Pogba is yet to make his club debut. He had a knee injury during preseason that prevented him from participating in France’s World Cup triumphs.

Originally anticipated to make his comeback for the match against Serie A leaders Napoli on January 13, the former Manchester United midfielder’s homecoming appears to have been postponed.

In remarks made during Saturday’s 2-0 victory against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium, Allegri made it obvious he is eager to avoid any inquiries over Pogba’s rehabilitation and did not provide a timetable.

“Paul still hasn’t been consistent in training, so I cannot say when he’ll be back,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“This is the truth and it’s important to say that, otherwise every day we’ll get these questions on how Pogba’s recovery is going. He hasn’t yet started running in training.”

Pogba is not the only injury concern for Juventus ahead of the resumption of the season, though Allegri expects the core of his squad to be ready for the clash against Cremonese on January 4.

“[Federico] Chiesa had a muscular issue, but that’s normal when stepping up the intensity after such a long injury lay-off and we preferred not to risk him. He’ll be ready for December 27,” he added.

“[Leonardo] Bonucci won’t be out for long, Juan Cuadrado will only be available after the Cremonese game and Mattia De Sciglio should be back from December 27 onwards.

“That is also when Danilo and Alex Sandro arrive, while [Adrien] Rabiot and the Argentineans will have a few more days to rest, as they are in the World Cup final tomorrow.”

  • 2022 World Cup: A win for Messi or France repeat?

Can Kylian Mbappe help France win back-to-back titles, or can Lionel Messi lead Argentina to a World Cup victory?

In the Sunday final at the Lusail Stadium (5:00 GMT), Argentina takes against France.

Despite having a record seven Ballon d’Or medals, which are given to the world’s finest player, Messi, 35, has never taken home the biggest team trophy in sports.

“People say France are favourites, but we have the advantage of having the greatest player of all time,” said Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

“We always like to hear the opponent is the favourite because we don’t feel superior or inferior to anyone.

“But, as I always say, we have the greatest player of all time. And with a good defence, we have many chances to reach our goal.”

France manager Didier Deschamps captained his country to World Cup victory in 1998 and then, as boss, guided them to another success in Russia four years ago.

He said: “I know Argentina, many people around the world, and maybe some French people, hope Lionel Messi could win the World Cup, but we’re going to do everything to achieve our objective.”

Can Messi help Argentina win World Cup for first time since 1986?

The final sees the tournament’s top two goalscorers go head-to-head in the race to win the Golden Boot. Both Messi and Mbappe have scored five times in Qatar, while France’s Olivier Giroud and Argentina’s Julian Alvarez are one goal behind on four.

Messi assisted Argentina in reaching the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil, but the Europeans ultimately prevailed 1-0 in extra time thanks to a goal from Germany’s Mario Gotze.

However, the star for Paris St. Germain has been the inspiration behind Argentina’s effort in Qatar.

He scored in the crucial 2-0 victory over Mexico after converting an early penalty in their opening match, which saw his nation suffer a shocking 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia. Argentina won Group C after defeating Poland 2-0. Messi also scored in Argentina’s 2-1 victory over Australia in the round of 16.

Argentina appeared to be in control of their quarterfinal match against the Netherlands after taking a 2-0 lead after 82 minutes, but Wout Weghorst scored twice for the Dutch, including an equalizer in the 11th minute of injury time to force extra time.

It eventually went to penalties but Martinez saved two spot-kicks as Argentina advanced, before a goal from Messi and two from Manchester City’s Alvarez gave them a routine 3-0 win over Croatia in the semi-finals.

Argentina have won the tournament twice, on home soil in 1978 and in Mexico in 1986, and are looking for their third success on Sunday.

“I’m already getting emotional because they’ve given everything sincerely,” said manager Lionel Scaloni. “Let’s hope we win the title and if it can’t be, they should be proud, because it’s a moment to enjoy.”

2022 World Cup: Messi World Cup final win or France repeat?

    Sickness bug hampers France’s preparations

Mbappe, 23, is chasing his second World Cup success and has been instrumental in guiding France to the final. He scored once in their 4-1 win over Australia and twice in the 2-1 victory over Denmark as France reached the last 16 with a game to spare.

That enabled Deschamps to rest players and, despite losing 1-0 to Tunisia, they won Group D, with Mbappe on target twice more in the 3-1 last-16 triumph over Poland.

In the quarter-finals they faced Gareth Southgate’s England and took the lead through Aurelien Tchouameni, but Harry Kane equalised with a penalty. Olivier Giroud put France ahead and they won it 2-1 after Kane missed a second spot-kick.

France beat the tournament’s surprise packages Morocco 2-0 in the semi-final to reach their fourth World Cup final in seven tournaments, having won the competition in 1998 and 2018 and losing in the final in 2006.

But their preparations have been hampered with a sickness bug.

Midfielder Adrien Rabiot, defender Dayot Upamecano and winger Kingsley Coman have been among those struggling with illness.

“We’ve had a few cases of flu-like symptoms,” said Deschamps. “We’re trying to be careful so it doesn’t spread and players have made great efforts out on the pitch and obviously their immune systems suffer.

“We’re taking all necessary precautions, trying to make sure it doesn’t spread but we have had to take precautions against it.”

    Match facts

    • They have met three times before at the World Cup. Argentina won both group matches in 1930 and 1978, but France were victorious in their only knockout encounter, winning 4-3 in the last 16 in 2018.
    • Argentina are competing in their sixth World Cup final, with only Germany (eight) participating in more. They won in 1978 and 1986 and lost in 1930, 1990 and 2014.
    • They could become the second side in World Cup history to lose their opening game and go on to lift the trophy, emulating Spain in 2010.
    • Messi can become the third Argentine player to win the Golden Boot at the World Cup after Guillermo Stabile in 1930 and Mario Kempes in 1978.
    • France have reached the World Cup final for a fourth time, all since 1998. This is twice as many as any other nation in this period.
    • Les Bleus are looking to become only the third nation to win back-to-back World Cups, after Italy (1934-38) and Brazil (1958-62).

  • Ofosu-Ampofo and I won’t sacrifice 25 years of friendship – Asiedu Nketia

According to Johnson Asiedu Nketia, he is not prepared to end his friendship with Samuel Ofosu Ampofo in the name of party elections.

In order to take over as Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), General Mosquito, as he is often known, deposed Mr. Ofosu Ampofo.

Asiedu Nketiah received 65.17% of the vote during the 10th National Delegates Congress, which made him the only candidate for the Party’s upcoming 2022 National Delegates Congress.

Asiedu Nketia pledged to protect the bond he has developed with his former boss, who has been a friend for more than 20 years, during his swearing-in speech.

“I will like to thank, most importantly, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo who has been my friend for 25 years. I value the friendship, so I don’t think we are going to sacrifice that friendship because of this contest,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Ofosu-Ampofo got 2,892 votes representing 33.81% of the votes cast.

About an hour to the end of the collation, Mr Ofosu Ampofo was spotted leaving the stadium in his vehicle.

General Mosquito insists that this election calls for unity among the party’s rank and file toward victory in 2024.

This is the only way, according to him, that Ghana’s economic crisis can be lessened.

  • There is a lot of room under the umbrella – Mahama condoles defeated aspirants

At the recently concluded National Delegates Congress of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), held in Accra, former president John Dramani Mahama made an effort to appease all losers who ran for national executive positions in the party.

There is space for everyone in the party to fulfill their contribution quota, according to Mr. Mahama.

He claimed that nobody will be left out and they shouldn’t be dissatisfied.

Mr. Mahama urged winners to exercise moderation in their celebrations as the national executives who had just been elected were sworn in.

He also urged them to reach out to losers and involve them in whatever processes they embark upon.

“This celebration must be very short. We must cut it short and get to work immediately. As I said, we are all the winners.

“For those who were elected, we must be gracious in victory and for those who have lost, let us understand that there is a lot of room under the umbrella for everybody,” he said.

The party organised its 10th National Delegates Congress to elect its new executives on Saturday, December 17.

Delegates of the party converged at the Accra sports Stadium for the exercise.

Some 9,200 delegates from the 276 constituencies took part in the exercise.

At the end of the contest, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah won the National Chairman position, beating his ‘good friend’ and incumbent chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo.

  • Get to work, shorten your celebration – Mahama to NDC’s newly elected national executives

Former president John Dramani Mahama has instructed the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) newly elected national executives to get ready to work right away.

Mr. Mahama described the 2024 general election as crucial and said the difficult task ahead demands the executives’ undivided focus while carrying out their mandates.

Delivering a speech at the just-ended national congress, the 2020 presidential candidate of the NDC said “We must cut the celebration and set to work immediately.”

“These executives have been elected by the delegates to serve a mandate until 2026 and it is going to be a very important mandate because a most critical election with a higher stake is due in 2024 and these executives are going to oversee it.

“I believe they understand the responsibility that has been thrust on their shoulders. So this celebration must be very short. We must cut the celebration and set to work immediately,” he stressed on Sunday morning.

Further urging unity following the internal elections, Mr. Mahama galvanized both election winners and losers to take part in amicable activities.

He claims that there is space under the umbrella for anyone.

“We are all the winners, but those who were elected must be gracious in victory and those who have lost, let us understand that there is a lot of room under the umbrella.

“The party might be asking them to serve in other capacities and we are all going to work together to ensure that those who were not elected have a role to play in the victory of 2024,” he noted.

  • We will put our lives on the line to free Ghanaians – Asiedu Nketia

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), the opposition party, has pledged to work to retake power in 2024 through its newly elected national executives.

They contend that the party must win the elections in 2024, period.

This was said in the National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia‘s victory address.

The immediate-past General Secretary, Mr. Asiedu Nketia, declared that he and his executives are ready to give up everything for the benefit of the party as a whole.

He claims that the delegates have given them the difficult task to complete.

“You the delegates of our party have given us the mandate to secure the second independence of Ghana.

“We know the path will not be smooth but we will stand up to the challenge and we are prepared to sacrifice everything and I mean everything including our lives to make sure this country is delivered,” he said.

The party organised its 10th National Delegates Congress to elect its new executives on Saturday, December 17.

Delegates of the party converged at the Accra sports Stadium for the exercise.

Some 9,200 delegates from the 276 constituencies took part in the exercise.

At the end of the contest, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia won the ultimate position of National Chairman.

  • ‘We have a stronger team now than before’ – Joseph Yamin

Joseph Yamin, the National Organiser-elect for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), claims that the party has a stronger team in place for the general elections in 2024.

One of the seven people that applied to fill the position was the former Deputy Minister of Sports.

According to Mr. Yamin, the party is now better positioned to win the 2024 election as a result of the election of new executives who emerged from the congress.

“I think that we have a strong team now and we’ll be able to move forward very strong, in fact, stronger than we use to be to win power 2024,” he said.

The NDC’s 10th National Delegates Congress has come to an end with the results announced.

The former General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah is now the Chairman-elect of the party after a landslide victory, according to Electoral Commission.

In addition, Fifi Kwetey succeeds Johnson Asiedu Nketia as general secretary with a decisive victory over Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor and Elvis Afriyie Ankrah.

The delegate election congress has been conducted without any violence, unlike when the party’s women and youth organizers were elected.

Now, the NDC will eagerly anticipate defeating New Patriotic Party representatives in the upcoming 2024 election.

  • Orsic strike secures World Cup bronze for Croatia

As Croatia defeated Morocco 2-1 in the World Cup’s third-place game on Saturday, Luka Modric concluded his World Cup career with the consolation gift of a bronze medal for Qatar 2022.

Following the disappointment of losing to Argentina in the semi-finals, goals of great marvel from Josko Gvardiol and Mislav Orsic allowed the runners-up from four years ago in Russia to finish this campaign on a high.

Croatia hopes that their 37-year-old skipper Modric will decide to continue playing and participate in their Euro 2024 campaign, but this was the midfielder for Real Madrid’s final World Cup game.

Gvardiol gave Croatia a seventh-minute lead at Khalifa International Stadium. Although Achraf Dari swiftly brought Morocco level, Orsic’s brilliant finish just before half-time proved to be the match winner.

Gvardiol’s goal was a super header into the left corner after Lovro Majer’s free-kick into the penalty area was skilfully nodded towards the penalty spot by Ivan Perisic.

Morocco were level just 112 seconds minutes later, though, with Dari applying a close-range finish with his head after Hakim Ziyech’s free-kick from the right flank was sent looping up by a heavy touch off Croatia’s Majer.

Yassine Bounou had almost sliced a pass into his own net early on, but the Morocco goalkeeper was sharp enough to keep out a low strike from Modric. However, he was beaten in the 42nd minute by an exquisite finish from Orsic, who arced the ball over the goalkeeper from just inside the left edge of the penalty area, the shot going in off the far post.

A deflected Orsic strike from 20 yards rippled the side-netting early in the second half as Croatia searched for a third goal against the team that became Africa’s first World Cup semi-finalists.

Gvardiol later wanted a penalty after going down under a challenge from Sofyan Amrabat, before Morocco had their big chance, with Youssef En-Nesyri denied from close range by Dominik Livakovic. He had another last-gasp opening too for Morocco, but sent a header just over the bar. They were left to settle for fourth, still a huge achievement.

  • Fifi Kwetey succeeds Asiedu Nketia as NDC General Secretary

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, a former Ketu South NDC MP, won by a landslide at the party’s 10th National Delegates conference on Saturday, and will succeed Johnson Asiedu Nketia as general secretary.

The former Propaganda Secretary ran against Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, a former Sports Minister, and Dr. Peter Boamah Otukunor, Mr. Nketia’s deputy.

Dr. Otukunor received 2,595 votes, and Mr. Afriyie Ankrah received 1,408 votes, while the NDC firebrand received 4,543 votes.

Johnson Asiedu Nketia bowed out as General Secretary after 17 years of service in order to run for a more senior position within the party.

For the Chairmanship position, General Mosquito, as he is more commonly known, faced off against Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, the current occupant.

Confirming his victory in a Facebook post, the jubilant former Deputy Finance Minister in the Mahama administration, said one of his contenders had called to congratulate him.

“My Brother and Comrade Boamah Otokunor called me a few minutes ago to congratulate me. Very gracious of him. I had earlier told him yesterday that I was proud of his competitive campaigning and I repeated same this morning. I reassured him of my complete readiness to work closely with him to make our party greater and stronger,” he wrote.

Fifi Kwetey takes over from Asiedu Nketia as NDC's General Secretary

According to the 55-year-old, “he looks forward to working closely together with him” as the party gears up to wrestle power from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

While applauding his competitors for the healthy competition, Mr Kwetey said he checks all the boxes the delegates wanted.

“I was not being complacent when saying what I was saying on the back of travelling to all 275 constituencies; spoken to them and listening to them. Therefore, I could feel exactly what they were yearning for so I knew what I was talking about when I said I was confident of winning,” He told Joy News’ Kweku Asante.

“I was not underrating my opponents, they also conducted a very strong campaign as well but I just felt that the mood of our teeming party supporters and delegates here wanted a different kind of leader and I fitted that pedigree far more,” he said on Saturday.

Mr Kwetey said uniting the members of the NDC after the internal election is pivotal to the party’s victory in the 2024 elections.

Regarding returning the NDC to IPAC Meeting, he said all the options are on the table for consideration.

“We are not going to be doing things the same way we have been doing them in the past,” the incoming General Secretary said.

  • Asiedu Nketia beats Ofosu-Ampofo to become NDC Chairman-elect

The incoming chairman of the National Democratic Congress is Johnson Asiedu Nketia.

At the current 2022 National Delegates Congress of the Party, the politician, 65, won 65.17% of the vote to defeat the opposition.

This is the result of the elections that were held on December 17, 2022, on Saturday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo who had vowed to emerge victor ahead of the congress got 33.81% of the votes.

He was spotted leaving the stadium in his vehicle about an hour before the end of the collation,

Popularly known as General Mosquito, Mr Asiedu Nketia relinquished his 17-year reign as the NDC’s General Secretary to run for the Chairmanship role.

Ahead of the polls, the General Secretary bade farewell to his members and urged all to forgive any transgressions that may have emanated from his office while serving as the chief scribe.

  • NDC Delegates Congress: Mahama, Asiedu Nketia, others arrive at Accra Sports Stadium

Former President John Mahama has arrived at the Accra Sports Stadium, where the NDC Delegates Congress is being conducted.

Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Mr. Mahama’s running mate for vice president in the 2020 election, as well as a few prominent delegates, were present.

He made his way around the stadium greeting delegates and party supporters before they took their seats.

Mahama is expected to address the conference as part of the proceedings.

The Conference which is under the theme, ‘Rallying for Victory 2024’ is being attended by over 9,200 delegates who are expected to be from 276 constituencies.

The National Chairman hopeful, Johnson Asiedu Nketia and other party executives are also at the event.

  • My 30 years in the NDC shows I can’t be a mole – Ofosu-Ampofo

Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has denied accusations that he is a party mole.

This comes after claims that he is a mole and can’t be trusted to be the party’s leader.

Additionally, Mr. Johson Asiedu Nketia, his rival in the NDC Chairmanship campaign, charged him with failing to provide pertinent information during the petition for the 2020 election.

Asiedu Nketia described his ordeal in what is thought to be a leaked speech to certain party supporters, saying he found it difficult to defend the party in court.

However, speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Friday, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo said he can never be a mole in the party. He added that he is an incorrigible member of the NDC.

He explained that he has spent half his life working for the NDC, thus it is impossible for him to betray the party.

“Do you know how long I have served the NDC? I am 60 years and I have served the NDC for 30 years- half of my life on this earth. It is sometimes very strange for someone in the party with the wildest imagination to suggest the least that the Chairman of the party is the mole in that party..does it make sense?” he quizzed.

According to the aspiring Chairman, he is hurt by such comments. He added that it is not fair on the part of his opponents to describe him as such.

“I have a family and my family has described NDC as my first wife and my real wife as my second wife, because when it comes to NDC, I give my all to the party.”

For this reason, Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo urged anyone with proof that he is a party mole to come forward with it.

  • Morocco face Croatia in third-place game

Morocco can be proud they are playing a seventh game at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, even though it is not Sunday’s final, says head coach Walid Regragui.

Their history-making run saw them become the first African nation to reach the semi-finals, but they were beaten by France on Wednesday.

On Saturday, they face Croatia in the match to decide who finishes third.

“We would like things to have gone differently and played in the final,” said Regragui.

“There is another game to play, we would like to be on the podium.

“I understand it’s important to finish third rather than fourth, but my takeaway is we didn’t reach the final. We wanted to play the final on Sunday, not play tomorrow.

“But I told my players this is our seventh World Cup game. If you told any Morocco fan we would be playing our seventh game on 17 December, they would be proud.

“Morocco played six World Cup games in 20-odd years and now we’ve played six games in a month – this is priceless. It’s as if we played two World Cups or even more, that’s beautiful from an experience point of view.”

Morocco and 2018 finalists Croatia will both end the tournament as they began it – by facing each other.

The two nations played out a goalless draw in Group F on 23 November at the Al Bayt Stadium, but Regragui is predicting a better encounter on Saturday.

“We knew Croatia were going to be one of the best teams in the competition,” he added. “After the first game, we knew the performance was very good.

“A lot of people said Croatia were approaching the end of their cycle and would have the rug swept out from under their feet. Croatia got stick for not beating ‘underdogs’ Morocco, but both teams reached the semi-finals.

“There was a lot of hesitation for the first game. Both teams will want to win it and it will be a great game.”

The game could be Croatia captain Luka Modric’s last with the national team and Regragui praised the 37-year-old Real Madrid midfielder.

“I don’t know if it’s Modric’s last game, he’s a competitive warrior and will want to finish his World Cup in style. When he wants to finish on a great note, we should be wary,” said Regragui.

“Hats off to Modric. What he’s doing at 37 is monumental. He was a Ballon d’Or winner and I completely understand why.”

However, Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic believes Modric will continue playing for the national side long enough to feature at the 2024 European Championships.

“I hope that he will be there,” Dalic said. “I am looking forward to it.

“It is quite certain that he will there be but he will personally decide how he feels. I personally feel that he will be, but ultimately it is his decision.”

Dalic says his side are looking to end the tournament on a high in what he sees as a “huge match”.

“For us, this is a major final, a major match and a fight for a medal,” he added.

“We have a lot of respect for the Moroccan team, who achieved a lot at this tournament and are a true surprise.

“They are of the same mindset. It is a huge match for them as well, they are coming with a strong line-up and we are not thinking about what the rivals are saying because we are well aware they are fighting for the same place and, for both, it is a huge match.

“Morocco resembles us from four years ago, no-one expected them to go so far. They have deserved to be where they are, they have matured and developed and went to a higher level with every game. They have grown into a team that are full of energy and self-motivated.

“They are definitely the most pleasant and biggest surprise from this World Cup, speaking of teams who could have done better – Spain, Germany, Netherlands, England – Italy did not even qualify. This is a specific World Cup where a third-place play-off is played by two nations who were not favourites.”

  • Messi’s World Cup performances show evolution of sport – Wenger

According to former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, Lionel Messi’s outstanding achievements at the 2022 World Cup “show the evolution of modern sport.”

At a press conference for FIFA’s Technical Study Group, Wenger and Germany icon Jurgen Klinsmann made the statement.

Many older players have played prominent roles for their national teams during the tournament in Qatar, with 35-year-old Lionel Messi set to captain Argentina against France in the World Cup final.

While Olivier Giroud, 35, will likely start for France on Sunday after surpassing Thierry Henry’s record as the Les Bleus’ all-time leading scorer, Luka Modric, 37, shone for Croatia as they advanced to the semi-finals.

On the other hand, if France defeats Argentina, Kylian Mbappe, 23, may become the youngest player to win two World Cup championships since Pele. Jude Bellingham, 19, was a key role in England’s progress to the quarterfinals.

Wenger believes that this World Cup is an example of how modern sport is developing and how new technology is enabling athletes to extend their careers.

“I managed [Arsenal] in 2006 against Barcelona in the Champions League final and Messi was already starting to play,” Wenger said at the press conference.

“That’s 2006, we are in 2022 – that’s 16 years later and he’s still in contest for being player of the tournament.

“This tournament shows the evolution of modern sport.

“This tournament is the tournament of young players who are ready earlier and earlier in top-level sport, and as well the tournament of players who last longer and longer than ever before.

“We have not experienced World Cups with 35-year-old players being dominant, but we have Giroud, we have Messi, Modric – 37 – dominant players at this tournament.

“It shows that despite all the negativity about health and welfare of players, the life of a top-level sportsman lasts longer. They are ready earlier and they finish later.”

Klinsmann thinks there is a great desire in the game for Argentina’s outstanding player to finally win football’s top honor now that Messi may be close to cap his career.

“Messi – everybody wants him to do well,” Klinsmann stated. “We talked before the tournament about the big superstars who will put their stamp on the tournament and most of them delivered.

“Most of us are Messi fans no matter what. We want him to win the World Cup and be seen on the same level in his home country as [Diego] Maradona.

“We all know that for [Cristiano] Ronaldo and Messi it could be the last tournament. They have established themselves on the world stage for the last 15 years.”

Klinsmann cited Mbappe as the potential heir to Messi and Ronaldo’s throne, adding: “We talk about those big superstars towards the end of their career but also who is the next one taking over.

“Mbappe has the advantage because of his age.

“I was amazed about a lot of young players coming through, like [Cody] Gakpo from the Netherlands, or even with Germany going home early, there’s a special kid coming up with [Jamal] Musiala.”

The World Cup in Qatar has come under intense scrutiny, particularly on the host nation’s treatment of migrant workers and views on same-sex marriages.

With the end in sight, FIFA president Gianni Infantino labelled it “the best World Cup ever”, with Klinsmann agreeing it had been a great tournament.

“It’s been wonderful,” Klinsmann declared. “[A] huge success off the field and on the field.

“We all have many moments with people here, the atmosphere, the stadiums, the organisation itself.

“Every time you are at a World Cup you think it’s the best. I’ll leave that up to other people. It’s been an unbelievable experience and tomorrow will be an amazing final.”

  • Christopher Nkunku signs deal with Chelsea

Christopher Nkunku’s signing to Chelsea from RB Leipzig has been “confirmed” by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.

Romano reportedly gave the “here we go” signal, indicating that the Blues have everything finalized and that he is now officially a member of the Chelsea team.

Although it is still unknown when announcements will be made, it seems like only a matter of time until the club itself confirms the relocation.

Despite owner and acting sporting director Todd Boehly’s opposition, Nkunku will go to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2023.

Despite Armando Broja’s severe injury, which will keep him out of action for the remainder of the season and leave the team lacking in the offensive department.

If a chance arises, Chelsea will consider its striker alternatives in the January transfer window, but Nkunku won’t be there.

With 12 goals and two assists in just 15 Bundesliga games this season, the 25-year-old brings an impressive resume to the team.

Nkunku has also contributed to four goals in the Champions League, and his versatility as a creator and striker makes him a dangerous player to have.

He will be hopeful that his form will continue when he makes a comeback after missing the World Cup with France due to a ruptured knee ligament last month.

In an interview with French television broadcaster Telefoot earlier this season, as quoted by GFFN, the highly sought-after forward broke his silence regarding his next step: “It’s no secret. There are clubs interested in me. Yes it’s flattering, but it’s also flattering to have a club like Leipzig do everything to keep me as well.

“I’ll have to reflect well and make a decision. The World Cup is on the way and that’s another factor to take into account.”

  • Klopp hints at Van Dijk absence for Man City cup tie

For Liverpool’s upcoming match against Manchester City, Jurgen Klopp has hinted that he won’t be considering using Virgil van Dijk.

Following the Netherlands’ World Cup defeat against Argentina last Friday, Van Dijk resumed training with Liverpool in Dubai this week.

The 31-year-old participated fully in all five of his nation’s games in Qatar, including extra time in the quarterfinal defeat to Argentina. He clocked 480 minutes of action in total.

While Klopp does not want to hasten Van Dijk’s recovery, he has not yet decided whether to start Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson, two English players.

Henderson did not finish any of the three England matches he started, while Alexander-Arnold managed just 33 minutes on the field across the Three Lions’ five matches.

“Yes, there’s a chance, of course – they’re training already,” Klopp told Liverpool’s official website when asked if any returning World Cup players would be in action against City.

“Hendo is already training here. Virgil is training here, but I don’t think we will try that. Hendo we will see, Trent we will see.

“But this group worked now together for nearly two weeks and we made a real step and that’s cool. I don’t know in this moment.

“I hope we all get through it and we all know in England, and in Europe in general, there’s kind of a virus going around, so we hope we can stay out of that.

“Then we’ll make the decision obviously on Wednesday who can play on Thursday. But it’s good and will be a very interesting game after that period, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Liverpool defeated Milan 4-1 in their second mid-season friendly on Friday, with Darwin Nunez – who suffered early World Cup heartbreak with Uruguay – scoring twice.

Mohamed Salah and Thiago Alcantara were also on target for Liverpool in the United Arab Emirates, where Klopp used 22 different players, including a number of youngsters.

“In general, tonight was the result of the last 10 days what we saw in training and tonight we could bring it on the pitch, which is obviously nice,” Klopp said.

“I’m not sure the academy [players] could watch the game tonight but when you see these boys and performing in a game like this, it’s cool.

“It’s a real physical game, adult football is a physical game and the boys need to make these steps so they can get ready for it step by step.

“The physical part will come but until you are that strong, you can create a lot of ideas, you can do things a bit smarter.

“There was a lot of really good things tonight and that’s why we play football. We want to see good football games.”

Liverpool’s trip to the Etihad Stadium is followed four days later by a visit to Aston Villa on their return to Premier League action, before hosting Leicester City on December 30.

  • CETAG suspends its strike action

The five-week strike by the Ghanaian College of Education Teachers’ Association has been immediately suspended.

Following a majority decision by the association’s local chapters to end their strike, the Education Minister promised to address their issues within two weeks of the strike’s suspension.

Nineteen of the 35 universities that cast online ballots decided to call off the strike, but would resume if their unresolved issues are not addressed as promised. This represents the majority of the 35 colleges.

CETAG suspends strike of over one-month

The remaining 16 cast ballots to prolong the strike until their welfare demands were satisfied.

However, eleven of the teacher preparation programs chose not to cast a ballot.

On Monday, December 19, 2022, instructors at the 46 colleges of education around the country are anticipated to report for duty.

The national president of the group, Prince Himah, promised members in a letter that the leadership was determined to negotiate better working conditions.

“Leadership promise to go to all length so that CETAG will get the best out of the engagement that is going to ensue as we suspend our destiny strike today, hoping the Minister and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission shall take the necessary steps as promised to bring finality to bear on all the unresolved issues of CETAG,” portions of the statement read.

Didier Deschamps, the head coach of France, is unfazed by the possibility that Les Bleus may interfere with Lionel Messi’s attempt to win the World Cup on Sunday.

Messi has already declared that the championship match at Lusail Stadium will be his final appearance at a World Cup.

In that sense, it is his final chance to win the single major award he has yet to take home, potentially solidifying his title as “best of all time.”

For many, Messi must win the World Cup in order for his legacy to surpass that of Diego Maradona, the legendary player for the Albiceleste.

As such, there is undoubtedly huge anticipation surrounding Argentina’s prospects in the final, but Deschamps – whose France side are bidding to become the first European side to retain the World Cup since 1938 – is not worried about the likelihood of it feeling like it is France against the world.

Asked if he got the feeling France were “alone” in that respect, Deschamps said: “I often get that feeling, but I’m fine being alone, that doesn’t bother me. These uncertainties always arise.

“We are here, we’ve done all we can to be well-prepared for the game against Argentina.

“Lionel Scaloni has also had some challenges; they lost their first match to Saudi Arabia, of course, but they are still here.

“And like us, we haven’t had to face everyone in this tournament, but in the games we’ve played, we’ve managed to come out as victors.

“I don’t have any particular worries or stresses for [the final]. I think when you prepare for a game like this, you need to keep your focus, remain composed, and with a World Cup final in particular you have the match but also the context around it.

  • France ‘calm and focused’ ahead of World Cup final despite illness, Deschamps says

Didier Deschamps, the head coach of France, claims that despite a sickness outbreak prior to Sunday’s World Cup final, his team is “remaining calm and focused.”

Due to an illness epidemic among the team, Les Bleus were without Adrien Rabiot and Dayot Upamecano for Wednesday’s 2-0 semi-final victory over Morocco.

After Deschamps indicated on Thursday that Kingsley Coman had felt under the weather, the French Football Federation announced on Friday that defense duo Raphael Varane and Ibrahima Konate had missed training due to illness.

At a press conference the day before the championship match versus Argentina, Deschamps was at ease and acknowledged that he was feeling good.

“I’m absolutely fine,” he said. “As for the players, I left quite early this morning, they were all still asleep so I have no recent updates.

“We are trying to manage the situation as well as we can, remaining calm and focused. I’ll get more information today and think about it today and maybe even tomorrow.

“I don’t want to go into details. I know it’s a subject that’s of interest to you and I fully understand that but we are doing our best to take precautions and adapt as necessary.

“We are trying to live with it without going too far, getting too carried away, just doing what’s necessary.

“We’d have preferred not to face this difficulty but we are facing it as best we can with our medical staff.”

France captain Hugo Lloris also seemed in fine shape when addressing the press, but also did not have any information on the condition of his team-mates.

“I have not got any more news since last night because everyone was still in their rooms when I got up, I haven’t seen anyone,” he said.

“I’m sure you’ll get more info by the next training session.

“We never really prepared for this type of thing, but we will try to get ready for the match the best we can.

“These are things we weren’t prepared for but we remain focused, and of course we are very excited about playing in a World Cup final.”

  • Xavi celebrates Busquets following Spain retirement

Following his decision to leave the international game, Sergio Busquets received praise from Xavi, who hailed him as one of the best midfielders in history.

Busquets, who led La Roja in each of their four games during the World Cup in Qatar, confirmed his retirement from Spain service on Friday.

Busquets’ blunder in a penalty shootout loss to Morocco in the round of 16 put an unseemly end to his illustrious career with Spain, where he made 143 games as a senior.

The Blaugrana manager thinks few players can match the effect of the 34-year-old, who played with his Barcelona teammate-turned-coach Xavi when Spain won the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.

“In the end, it’s a personal decision that you make when you feel the time is right,” Xavi told Barcelona’s website. “I wish him the best, now he will be able to rest more and focus on Barca.

“He is a player who has made history. He is one of the best midfielders that football has produced worldwide and, for sure, the best defensive midfielder in the history of Spain.”

Fellow Barcelona star Jordi Alba said Busquets will be “sorely missed” by Spain, who will be led by Luis de la Fuente in Euro 2024 qualifying after Luis Enrique left his role as head coach.

“You have always been a great leader for all of us who are part of the team, both in good times and in bad,” Alba wrote on Twitter.

“After so many training sessions and games together in the national team, today you say goodbye and you will be sorely missed, friend.

“Thank you for what you have contributed to us and for everything you have given.”

  • Benzema ‘not interested’ to join France ahead of World Cup final

Just two days before France’s World Cup final match against Argentina, Karim Benzema sent a mysterious statement on social media claiming he is “not interested.”

Due to a thigh injury he aggravated in practice, Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema was ruled out of Qatar 2022 on the day of the competition.

There were rumors that the current Ballon d’Or winner, who had recovered from his injury and resumed training with his club, may rejoin the team.

However, asked if Benzema could make a shock return ahead of Sunday’s final, France boss Didier Deschamps said: “I don’t want to answer you. It’s a stupid question.”

Further reports from Spain on Friday claimed Benzema was unhappy to have been sent home in the first place and did not take kindly to Deschamps’ latest comments.

The 34-year-old has now posted an ambiguous message on social media, simply translated as “I’m not interested”, accompanied by an explosion emoji.

Former Lyon striker Benzema has scored 37 goals in 97 appearances for France.

Les Bleus are aiming to become just the third side – and first since Brazil in 1962 – to retain the World Cup trophy after beating Morocco 2-0 in the semi-finals to advance.

  • Capitol riot: Committee to seek charges for Trump – reports

Three criminal charges against former President Donald Trump are expected to be recommended by the congressional investigation into the Capitol incident last year.

According to US media, a former US president will face an unprecedented rebellion accusation from the House of Representatives select committee.

The panel’s final report is anticipated to be released the following week.

On January 6, 2021, a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in an effort to prevent Joe Biden from being sworn in as president.

The justice department – which is already investigating Mr Trump’s role in the unrest – is not obliged to consider referrals from any congressional panel.

Mr Trump denies wrongdoing. On Friday his spokesman, Steven Cheung, said in a statement: “The January 6th un-Select Committee held show trials by Never Trump partisans who are a stain on this country’s history.”

The select committee is scheduled to hold its final meeting on Monday when any charging recommendations would be unveiled.

As well as insurrection, according to various outlets, the panel will suggest Mr Trump be charged with obstructing an official proceeding and conspiracy to defraud the United States.

The nine panellists are expected to approve the final eight-chapter report, drawing on interviews with more than 1,000 witnesses, and submit it to the Department of Justice (DoJ).

The full report will be made public on Wednesday, said chairman Bennie Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat who is helming the select committee.

California congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, another member of the panel, told CNN on Friday that the lawmakers have “been very careful in crafting these [charging] recommendations and tethering them to the facts that we’ve uncovered”.

The House select committee has argued Mr Trump spread claims that he knew were false about the 2020 presidential election being stolen, before pressuring state officials, the justice department and his own vice-president to help subvert his defeat. The panel accuses him of inciting the Capitol riot in a last-ditch bid to remain in power.

The DoJ is already investigating the then-Republican president’s actions surrounding the riot.

Seven days after the raid on Congress, the House impeached Mr Trump for a second time on the grounds of incitement of insurrection.

Mr Trump, who is the only president to ever be impeached twice, was cleared by the US Senate.

Last month, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a former war crimes prosecutor to decide whether Mr Trump should be prosecuted.

Jack Smith is tasked with determining if the 2024 presidential candidate should be put on trial for mishandling classified files that were recovered during an FBI search of Mr Trump’s Florida estate in August, or for encouraging the violent mob on 6 January 2021.

  • FIFA accused of risking players’ welfare with new Club World Cup proposal

FIFPRO claims that FIFA‘s “short-sighted” intentions to start a 32-team Club World Cup in 2025 are endangering the wellbeing of the players.

At a news conference on Friday, the football governing body presented their brief recommendations for the new iteration of the competition, which is presently played yearly by seven teams.

The FIFA Council met earlier in the day and authorized plans to move through with the expanded competition, which will be contested once every four years.

In addition, FIFA announced the creation of a Women’s Club World Cup and the alternating-year World Series event, which would feature nations from other continents.

However, the global union for professional football players has hit out at the announcement, claiming there had been no dialogue with FIFA prior to the competitions being ratified.

“FIFPRO took note with surprise of today’s decisions by the FIFA Council concerning the international match calendars for men’s and women’s football that could have serious consequences for and aggravate pressure on the welfare and employment of players,” the statement read.

“Despite an understanding FIFPRO reached with FIFA last week that a joint negotiation of the international match calendar would take place before the FIFA Congress in March 2023, these decisions were taken unilaterally without seriously consulting, let alone agreeing, with the players.

“The announcements today of a new format for the Club World Cup as of 2025, new principles for the Men’s and Women’s IMC [international match calendar] post-2024 and 2023 respectively, including the ‘rolling over’ of the current women’s IMC into 2024-25 which will cause severe congestion during the Olympic competition year, have created new conditions, that further increase pressure on player workload and their job.

“Once again, decisions to scale competitions without implementing appropriate safeguards are short-sighted and pay no attention to players’ health and performance.

“This decision once more shows that key stakeholders of the game are not being appropriately involved in decision making of football, even when it concerns the core of their fundamental rights.”

It was confirmed on Friday that Morocco will host the 2023 Club World Cup in February, when European champions Real Madrid will be seeking a record-extending fifth title.

  • 2-year-old survives hippo attack in Uganda

A two-year-old boy in southwest Uganda has survived a hippopotamus assault that occurred close to his home.

Iga Paul was having fun near the Lake Edward shoreline when the hippo attacked.

According to authorities, the hippo seized the child and “swallowed half of his body,” adding that a local guy used stones to fend the animal off.

The BBC was informed by Uganda’s wildlife authority that this claim is false and that the youngster was really attacked rather than swallowed.

The toddler was rushed to a local medical facility after the attack, which happened on December 4, where he received treatment for his wounds, according to authorities.

Later, he was sent to Bwera Hospital, where medical staff vaccinated him against rabies as a precaution.

According to the police, this was the first occasion a hippo had left the lake and assaulted someone. However, the animals, which can weigh up to 1.5 tonnes (1,500kg), are thought to be responsible for the deaths of 500 or so Africans each year.

And officers warned locals that the animals can “see humans as a threat” and said that “any interaction can cause them to act strangely or aggressively”.

Hippos are the third largest living land mammal and their teeth can reach up to 50.8cm (20 inches) in length. Despite their size, they can also reach speeds of up to 20 mph (32 km/h).

While the animals are herbivores, they can become highly aggressive when they feel threatened or their habitats are disturbed.

  • GFA drags Sompa FM, Jeffrey Asare to court for defamation

The Ghana Football Association has sued Sompa FM and its journalist Jeffrey Asare for defamation.

The plaintiff per a writ issued is Michael Oskere, who is reported to hold the position, Chief of Staff at the GFA.

The said role has got many Ghanaians on social media baffled.

The suit comes as no surprise as the Ghana Football Association announced that it has instructed its lawyers to institute legal action against persons who defame the Association, its officials, products, and the Black Stars brand, as well as media platforms used to do the same.

According to the Association in a press release, the legal forum will provide the opportunity for such persons to present any evidence to substantiate their allegations.

The GFA noted that its action stems from some individuals deliberately maligning and defaming the GFA and the Black Stars brand in an attempt to manufacture a non-existent scandal about the team.

This erupted following the exit of the senior national team, the Black Stars, from the ongoing FIFA World Cup, Qatar in 2022.

  • Transport fares to decrease by 15.3% effective Dec 19

As of Monday, December 19, public transport operators will cut their rates by 15.3%.

According to a statement from the Road Transport Operators, the action is in line with the recent decline in gasoline prices.

The percentage of reduction was decided after discussions with important stakeholders.

“Following the negotiations and in consideration with the plight of drivers, commuters and the general public, we have resolved to reduce the existing transport fares by 15.3%,” the statement added.

Transport fares reduced by 15.3% effective Monday

“With the recent reductions in the prices of petroleum products, it became necessary to engage stakeholders to give consideration to a review of the fares in line with the Administrative Instrument.

“Consequently, series of negotiation meetings were held with the stakeholders to agree on an acceptable level of fare reduction commensurate with the current fuel prices,” portions of the statement from the transport operators said.

The reduction should be implemented smoothly, thus drivers and commuters have been advised.

Oil-related product prices have been declining recently, and more price declines are likely.

The costs of gasoline at the pump have begun to decline thanks to the nation’s major oil marketing companies (OMCs).

  • Deadline for domestic debt exchange extended to December 30

The domestic debt exchange deadline has been extended from December 19 to December 30, with a settlement date of January 6, 2023, according to a statement from the Ministry of Finance.

The Ministry claims that the extension is in response to input from the financial industry over the requirement to get internal and Executive Board clearances, which are required considerations for their participation in the exchange.

“The extension also affords Government of Ghana the opportunity to consider suggestions made by all stakeholders with the aim of adjusting certain measures acceptable within the constraints of the Debt Sustainability Analysis,” it added.

The extension comes in response to criticism of the debt exchange program’s structure from participants in the financial sector.

Critics claim that because the financial sector bears the bulk of the burden, the system is biased in favor of the government.

The Ministry declared that it is trying to rework the debt exchange offer with the Bank of Ghana, other financial sector authorities (SEC, NPRA, and NIC), as well as its advisors, including input from various institutions and the Unions.

“We believe this extension will provide enough time for the necessary consultations and analysis to be completed to meet the expectations of local and foreign institutional bondholders while preserving the integrity of the Debt Sustainability Analysis and the Staff Level Agreement,” it concluded.

  • Sinisa Mihajlovic dies after battling leukaemia

Sinisa Mihajlovic, a former manager of AC Milan and Bologna, passed away at the age of 53 after a protracted battle with cancer.

The former Yugoslavia defender initially revealed he has leukemia in 2019. He had previously won the European Cup with Red Star Belgrade as a player in 1991.

Despite receiving a successful course of treatment, he was given a second disease diagnosis in March 2022.

“His impact in our game, country and hearts will be forever remembered,” said a Serie A statement.

Mihajlovic won Serie A as a player with Lazio and Inter Milan and also played for Roma and Sampdoria.

He won 63 international caps between 1991 and 2003, representing the former Yugoslavia at the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

He managed Serbia’s national team and was Bologna boss up until September when he was sacked following a poor start to the season.

“It was the most difficult decision I have made since I have been president of Bologna,” said Bologna president Joey Saputo at the time.

“In recent years we have lived together with Sinisa beautiful and painful moments that have cemented a relationship that is not only professional, but above all human.

“Mihajlovic has faced the disease with courage and determination since the day he wanted to make his state of health public in a moving press conference.

“Since then, despite the hospital stays and the heavy effects of the treatments he has been subjected to, he has always remained close to the team, making every effort to be in contact with the players, in person or in connection, thanks also to the professionalism of his staff.”

In a statement posted on their website, the Serbian FA wrote: “Football has lost too soon a champion of Europe and the world, one of the best performers of free-kicks in the history of football, player, coach and selector, a man who left a deep mark in the history of Serbian and Italian football with his career.”

Javier Zanetti, who played with Mihajlovic at Inter Milan, said: “He was a good friend and now he is gone. He has done so much for football – big hug to his family.”

A minute’s silence was held for Mihajlovic before AC Milan’s game with Liverpool in the Dubai Super Cup on Friday.

  • France players struck down by illness bug

Following the illness of two additional crucial players, Ousmane Dembele says France is “taking precautions” ahead of Sunday’s World Cup final against Argentina.

Due to a sickness virus in the camp, Adrien Rabiot and Dayot Upamecano were absent for Les Blues’ 2-0 semi-final victory over Morocco on Wednesday.

Kingsley Coman, who had a fever the day of the game, and Rabiot were both left off the roster, and Upamecano served as an unused substitute.

It’s believed that both Upamecano and Rabiot have fully healed in time for this weekend’s championship game at Lusail Stadium.

Raphael Varane and Ibrahima Konate, two central defenders, reportedly trained separately from the team on Friday after becoming ill, according to numerous sources.

Two days before the final, Aurelien Tchouameni and Theo Hernandez are rumored to have missed the entire session while they heal from minor ailments.

Despite potentially losing more players to illness and injury, Dembele insists France are not overly concerned at this stage.

“It doesn’t worry us,” he said at a news conference on Friday. “With Dayot, after a day I went to see him with my mask on and he was much better.

“For the players and the staff, it doesn’t worry us, we are just taking precautions.

“We are not afraid of the virus. Dayot and Adrien had headaches and stomach aches. I made them honey and ginger tea. We hope everyone will be better for the final.”

France are already without the likes of Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante, Karim Benzema, Presnel Kimpembe, Lucas Hernandez and Christopher Nkunku through injury.

Les Blues are aiming to become just the third ever side to retain the trophy, while Argentina are seeking a first world crown in 36 years.

  • Ebo Whyte’s Festival of Plays is here with moons, airplanes and husbands for Christmas

Christmas is here again and for lovers of stage plays and a good storyline, this means one thing; The Roverman Festival Of Plays is here!

This year’s Festival to happen at the National Theatre is packed with a set of five titillating plays that have received great reviews so far.

The festival starts on Saturday, 24th December with Take Me To The Moon; a play that explores love, ambition and power play in the corridors of power.

The play asks a number of questions; What is your biggest dream, the one that scares you even thinking about it? And what if pursuing that dream could cost you the love of your life?

Next stop is Devil’s Wife, which shows on 25th December. Devil’s Wife exposes a man’s willingness to brave it all for love, even in the face of death. We are introduced to Rev Kweku Kom, whose interest in Zoe could lead to his death. Will he proceed? Or is he willing to fight the ultimate battle to be the one who survives the first wedding night with Zoe?

I Slept With Your Wife shows on Tuesday, the 27th of December 2022. This is a play that has one of the most mind-blowing sets ever seen in a stage play. The play is set in an airplane and the plane actually flies on stage! It is a thrilling tale of confessions 29,000 feet in the air.  It is a tale of fearful captains, fearless wives and funny fathers.

The Festival then moves to New Year’s Day, and the Roverman team will serve their patrons Husband Material 7 Yards. If Ghana ever had a classic and melodic response to the 1965 classic ‘The Sound Of Music’, this would be it.

It tells the story of a jobless Joe whose wife was quite charitable with complains. They have three children who bring light and laughter in their home and encourage their father that his setback is not forever. Toss in a doctor who looks like a scoliosis patient and we have the perfect villain to tell a harmonious Ebo Whyte story.

On 2nd January 2023, the curtains of the Festival come to a close with He Said, She Said. For a writer like Mark, ideas are the fodder that he feeds on for his livelihood. As the saying goes, writing is a jealous wife. And on a day when Mark gets ideas visiting for the perfect story, his wife decides to stake her claim in his life as one who needs attention too.

In comes the battle between the ideas and his wife as to who holds the monopoly over jealousy and drama. He Said, She Said is a hilarious peep into Mark and Hannah’s life. You will definitely identify yourself in there, you should not miss it.

  • Herro scores career-high 41 points in close Heat win

Tyler Herro had to have a career game on Thursday for the Miami Heat to avoid becoming the Houston Rockets’ third high-profile victim in a row.

Herro led his team to a 111-108 victory with a game- and career-high 41 points on 13 of 20 shooting, including 10-of-15 from three-point range.

Jimmy Butler, an All-Star teammate of his, played an excellent supporting role, with 20 points (on 7 of 13 shooting), 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals, and 3 blocks.

Jalen Green led the Rockets, who were coming off victories over the Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns, in scoring once more with 22 points (eight of 21), while Kevin Porter Jr. was more productive with 21 points (10 of 17), five assists, and four steals.

The Heat have won three straight games to level their record at 15-15, and when they play the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday to wrap out their four-game road trip, they will have a great chance to move above.500.

    Morant dominates the Bucks

The Memphis Grizzlies led by 46 points after three quarters of their blowout win against the Milwaukee Bucks, allowing the starters to ride the bench down the stretch on the way to a 142-101 final score.

Last year’s Most Improved Player, Ja Morant, was at the center of the Grizzlies’ success with 25 points (nine-of-21), 10 rebounds and 10 assists, while eight Memphis players reached double-figures.

With the win, the Grizzlies improved their record to 19-9 and now sit alone atop the Western Conference.

Jazz fight off the Pelicans in overtime

The Utah Jazz continue to win at home, defeating the New Orleans Pelicans 132-129 to improve their record at Vivint Arena to 11-5 this season.

It is the second game in a row the Jazz have defeated the Pelicans after Tuesday’s 121-100 triumph, with Jordan Clarkson proving the hero this time around.

Clarkson scored a season-high 39 points on 15-of-26 shooting, adding eight rebounds and two steals, including the first four points of overtime after Pelicans youngster Trey Murphy III forced the extra period with a three-pointer in the dying seconds of regulation.

  • Paul urges Suns to be consistent after win over Clippers

Chris Paul has urged the Phoenix Suns to “keep this train moving” after they defeated the Los Angeles Clippers to snap a five-game losing streak.

On Thursday, the Suns defeated the undermanned Clippers 111-95 to put an end to their road trip.

Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, Norman Powell, Reggie Jackson, and Ivica Zubac were absent from Los Angeles because they were attacked in their own backyard.

Mikal Bridges led the way with 27 points, while Paul chipped in with 15 and added 13 assists in the victory that improved their record to 17-12.

Phoenix are now in fourth place in the Western Conference, and point guard Paul is eager to start winning.

“I’m happy we finally got a win out of this road trip, and we’re going to try to keep this train moving,” he said.

Bridges received accolades from Suns head coach Monty Williams for how he handled having a bad game against the Houston Rockets.

“He’s a prideful player,” Williams said. “He needed a forklift to get his lip off the ground the other night, he was so down about his performance.

“When he’s shooting the ball like (tonight), we’re a pretty good team.”

The Clippers are 17-14 and occupy eighth spot in the Western Conference.

  • Dalic hopeful Modric plays for Croatia through to Euro 2024

Zlatko Dalic has optimistic that at the 2024 European Championship, Luka Modric will represent Croatia.

When he led Croatia to the World Cup final in Russia four years ago, Modric earned the Ballon d’Or award. This year, the Real Madrid star had another strong tournament as Dalic’s team advanced to the quarterfinals in Qatar.

However, the 37-year-old was unable to motivate his team to a semi-final victory over Argentina on Tuesday, sparking rumors that he may hang up his international football boots.

Dalic is optimistic that Modric would remain on for at least another 18 months despite his refusal to comment on his future following the loss.

“I hope that he [Modric] will be there [at Euro 2024],” Dalic said. “I am looking forward to it.

“It is not certain that he will there be and he will personally decide how he feels. I personally feel that he will be, but it ultimately is his decision.”

Morocco’s World Cup campaign, which saw them shock Belgium, Spain, and Portugal, captivated the attention of soccer fans around the globe.

They lost to France 2-0 in the semi-final on Wednesday, and manager Regragui is having a hard time getting pumped up for the third-place matchup.

“Morocco remind me of us four and a half years ago,” he said. “Nobody expected them to be this high, but they got to where they are with their quality and emotions.

“From game to game, they only grew and I think we are in for a much more difficult match than the one from the opening group.

“We have full and great respect for them. They show unity and are not afraid of anyone.”

“It is a little bit difficult,” he said. “It is very complicated for both teams. You are so disappointed; you have just lost a semi-final and then two days later you have to go back out there.

“It is like the booby prize. I’m sorry for speaking like this. I understand it should be important, I understand it is better to finish third than fourth, but, for me, my takeaway is just that we didn’t get to the final.

“Even if we did get to the final, and I finished second, I would be saying the same thing to you.

“We want to be as positive as possible, especially for our fans. Finishing third would be great for our image.”

  • Pochettino rubbishes debate over Messi’s lack of defensive work

Lionel Messi’s previous coach at Paris Saint-Germain, Mauricio Pochettino, called the debate over his defensive play “almost stupid.”

In their sixth World Cup final, Argentina will face France on Sunday in an effort to win the trophy for the first time since 1986. Messi’s team will be competing in the match.

With his 26th and likely final game remaining in the World Cup, Messi will break the record for most appearances in the tournament. He also has a chance to become the first player to score 20 goals during the tournament (currently 11 goals, eight assists).

The captain of Argentina struggled early on in the competition, and several onlookers criticized his work ethic; nonetheless, he has excelled in the knockout round.

Former Albiceleste player Pochettino, who guided Messi at PSG until he was fired earlier this year, laughed off any worries and contrasted Messi with two other legendary players who weren’t known for their defensive prowess.

“Honestly, I think the debate about Messi’s defensive work is so stale, almost silly,” he wrote in The Athletic.

“You cannot pretend that [Diego] Maradona or Pele — along with Messi, the most important players in football — were focused on trying to win the ball back. He can’t participate in that. He just needs the others to run for him.

“He doesn’t need to press. When you have Messi, you need the other players to understand that they have to get the ball and give it to him so he can conserve his energy and then be decisive, as shown.”

Argentina’s run to the final has not been all about Messi, though, with Lionel Scaloni’s side proving resolute in defence.

They have restricted their opponents to just 5.7 shots per game – fewer than any other side. Indeed, they have not faced above 0.6 expected goals against in any of their six games so far.

Pochettino believes that defensive solidity and work ethic has been crucial in allowing Messi to flourish.

“Of course, Argentina need Messi, but Messi needs the other 10 players to fight for him at all times,” he added. “That’s one of the keys to this team: they all believe that playing for Messi, they can win the World Cup.

“You can see that the players give 120 per cent to achieve this. Different players: [Rodrigo] De Paul, [Alexis] Mac Allister, [Enzo] Fernandez, [Julian] Alvarez, they give everything they have and more, and they do it for Messi.

“They give everything because it’s their dream, they are so close, and when they have Messi, they know that everything is possible.

“That’s the most important thing about this Argentina team, and the reason why they are in the final. It’s because the players fully understand their role. When you have Messi in your team, you have to run for him.

“And when you have the ball, you have to give it to him as soon as possible so that he can create something. So, the players know what they have to do at all times: to give Messi everything he needs to be decisive.”

  • Schmidt believes World Cup stars will stay

Enzo Fernandez and Goncalo Ramos are two World Cup stars who Benfica manager Roger Schmidt is not concerned about losing.

The youthful players, both 21 years old, and seasoned defender Nicolas Otamendi are crucial to head coach Schmidt’s ambitions for victory in Lisbon, he stated.

The Argentina team is getting ready for Sunday’s World Cup final against France, in which both Fernandez and Otamendi may start.

Because of this, midfielder Fernandez has been associated with a number of teams, including Liverpool.

Benfica sold striker Darwin Nunez to the Reds in the last transfer window, and Schmidt is determined to retain the best of the talent that has remained at the club.

“We are very happy for them and they are happy to play at Benfica. We need players like them,” Schmidt told a press conference on Friday, according to O Jogo.

“We are not afraid that they will leave. We will not give anyone away; we need them to be champions.”

In Schmidt’s first season as manager, Benfica are atop the Primeira Liga standings after winning 12 of their first 13 games.

When asked about his Argentine teammates, Schmidt said he was “happy for them” to be playing in the World Cup final while Portugal’s domestic competitions start.

On Saturday, Ramos of Portugal could play in Benfica’s Taca da Liga round-robin match against Moreirense.

He established his reputation by scoring a hat-trick in Portugal’s 6-1 victory against Switzerland in the World Cup’s round of 16. He replaced Cristiano Ronaldo in the lineup.

Looking at the finals in Qatar, Schmidt said: “Otamendi has played at a fantastic level. I think Goncalo and Enzo have been playing very well throughout the season.

“Enzo took advantage of opportunities with Argentina, he didn’t begin in the starting line-up. Goncalo Ramos too, with Portugal, scored three goals. It shows that they have a lot of confidence.”

German coach Schmidt also acknowledged he will be siding with Argentina in the final, out of duty to his players.

“I have all the respect for France, but there are two of our players in Argentina, of course I’ll support them,” he said. “To be honest, I’m also a [Lionel] Messi fan, he continues to be the best in the world for me and he’s shown it.”

  • Russell optimistic Mercedes will be better next year

Mercedes “just got it wrong,” in George Russell’s opinion, this season and will be much more competitive next.

By the time 2022 rolled around, the Silver Arrows had won eight straight constructors’ titles and seven drivers’ titles, including six for Lewis Hamilton.

But Russell’s switch to Mercedes came at the same time that their car had a terrible year, struggling to keep up with Max Verstappen’s Red Bull.

Russell finished fourth in the driver standings and Hamilton dropped to sixth place for Mercedes, who finished third in the constructors’ championship.

Russell does not anticipate that to be the case in 2023, but he is convinced that Mercedes will still be able to produce a championship-winning vehicle.

“They haven’t forgotten how to build a fast race car,” Russell told BBC Radio Norfolk. “We just got it wrong this year.

“We got the philosophy wrong. We went down a route which turned out to be the wrong route.

“Sometimes it takes you a long time to dig yourself out of that hole. Now I feel we’ve dug ourselves out of that hole and we’re building on top of that.

“We are a step behind Red Bull and Ferrari and we’ve got a lot of catching up to do – but we’re definitely going to be in a much stronger position from race one next year than we were this year.”

At the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, the year’s penultimate race, Russell finally achieved his goal of earning his first career victory, but he still longs for more.

“When you join a team like Mercedes, you’re expecting victories,” he said. “I felt ready to fight for race wins and championships this year, but you’ve just got to manage your expectations.

“You’ve got to change those sights slightly, and it’s been really intriguing for me this year, seeing how the team deal with this situation.

“I’m here for the long haul, and even though I wanted victories and [to be] fighting for that championship in 2022, as a team these struggles are going to set us up for the coming years.

“I hope I look back in 10 years’ time and say the 2022 season was a positive one in the journey.”

  • Peru announces nationwide state of emergency over protests

In response to the unrest that has gripped the nation in the turbulent days since President Pedro Castillo was removed from office last week on accusations of insurrection and conspiracy, the government of Peru on Wednesday proclaimed a 30-day nationwide state of emergency.

“A state of emergency has been declared for the whole country, due to the acts of vandalism and violence, the seizure of highways and roads, which are stabilizing (…) and require a forceful and authoritative response,” said Alberto Otarola, Peru’s minister of defense.

The suspension of a number of rights, including the freedom of assembly, the inviolability of one’s home, and freedom of movement, as well as the potential for nighttime curfews, will result from the declaration of a state of emergency.

The action was taken less than a week after the former president Castillo attempted to dissolve Congress and govern by decree in an effort to escape being impeached for the third time by the opposition-led assembly. Legislators instead mandated his arrest.

    Peruvian protesters demand immediate elections

Castillo was apprehended on December 7, while seeking to flee to the Mexican Embassy in Lima. Mexico — along with other leftist countries in the region — has voiced support for the Marxist former school teacher.

After his arrest, Vice-President Dina Boluarte was sworn in as Peru’s sixth president in as many years.

Boluarte sought to defuse the growing anger on the streets by announcing that elections would be moved up from 2026 to 2024, this, however, did nothing to mollify angered Peruvians.

Since then, she has said that new elections may take place as early as December 2023.

“Legally it works for April 2024, but by making some adjustments we can bring them forward to December 2023,” Boluarte told reporters.

Nevertheless, Castillo’s supporters have demanded his release and called for new elections to be staged immediately. Those opposing him are also calling for Congress to be dissolved and new elections held rather than accept Boluarte as president.

On Wednesday, a judge in Lima denied Castilo’s release from jail, as prosecutors filed a request that he remain in prison for 18 months of pre-trial detention.

At least seven people have died amid anti-government protests over the past several days.

What has the new president of Peru said?

In announcing her plan to move up elections, President Boluarte said, “Peru cannot overflow with blood.”

As protesters blocked streets, pelted police with rocks while attempting to storm Congress, and clashed with authorities, Boluarte said: “The only thing I can tell you brothers and sisters [is] to keep calm. We have already lived through this experience in the 80s and 90s, and I believe we do not want to return to that painful history.”

The statement referenced the years in which the Shining Path insurgency carried out bombings and assassinations across the country, sparking decades of violence that led to the death and disappearance of nearly 70,000 people.

“This is a very serious social convulsion,” said Peru’s rights ombudsperson, Eliana Revollar. “We fear it will lead to an uprising because there are people calling for an insurrection, who want to take up arms.”

Appearing via video link before a court in Lima on Tuesday, Castillo railed against what he called his arbitrary and unfair arrest, vowing that he would “never give up and abandon this popular cause that brought me here.”

He then appealed to security forces “to lay down their arms and stop killing these people thirsty for justice.”
