  • Trust God to use me to turn things around – Akufo-Addo to Ghanaians

President Akufo-Addo has entreated Ghanaians to keep their faith in God and in him to address the current economic challenges facing the country.

Speaking to congregants of the St. Mark Anglican Church during the inauguration of the Kyebi Archdeaconry on Sunday, October 23, 2022, he has kept faith in God and is optimistic that the good days are yet to come.

“Let’s keep our faith in God and let’s trust God to use me to turn the fortunes of the nation around. Don’t lose your faith in me. Keep believing me, know that this too shall pass,” he remarked.

The Diocesan Bishop of the Anglican Church, Rt. Rev. Felix Odei Annanxy, who acknowledged the global economic crisis, pleaded with the president to have “direct contact with God for vision to lead the country right and change the economy.”

Currently, the Ghana Cedi has been cited by a Bloomberg report as the worst-performing currency against the dollar worldwide.

The local currency also lost further grounds Friday morning to trade at ¢14.70 to the dollar, quotations from the forex bureaus indicate.

The free fall of the local currency is having adverse effects on importers who rely on the dollar to trade.

Already, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have also increased the prices of petroleum products at the pumps.

Currently, some OMCs are selling a litre of petrol for ¢13.10 from the previous price of ¢11.10, representing about 16% increase.

On the other hand, the price of diesel per litre has shot up to about ¢15.99, from the previous price of ¢13.90 – this is about a 12% surge.

These, among others, have led to a cost of living crisis in the country, leading to some Ghanaians calling on the government to act quickly to right the situation.

  • GES PROs, MoE and journalists commit to promoting play-based learning

Right To Play Ghana has successfully conducted its one-day training workshop on play-based learning and its impact in Ghanaian classrooms.

The primary objective of the workshop which took place last Friday was to equip media practitioners and public relations officers of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and Ministry of Education (MoE) with the requisite knowledge to cover and report on play-based learning in the country.

Also, journalists were provided with data on how the incorporation of play-based learning by some teachers in the Northern, Volta and Greater Accra regions, is positively impacting the learning outcome of Ghanaian girls and boys.

Communications Specialist at Right To Play Ghana, A. Kwabena Brako said the mass incorporation of play-based learning across Ghana would require the services of journalists who will serve as play advocates.

Journalists, GES PROs and MoE commit to promoting play-based learning

“The misconceptions around the use of play in the classroom are many and this requires a direct response backed by relevant scientific data. However, we are aware that individual journalists cannot shift the tide of education coverage alone, particularly around the impact of play-based learning in Ghanaian classrooms,” he said.

According to Mr Brako, Right To Play Ghana believes that one of the surest ways to help is to create a “non-profit database of journalists who are willing and able to talk and write about play-based learning and its contribution to quality primary education.”

Speaking after the training, a reporter with Kingdom FM in Accra, Samuel Opoku, described the program as a success and pledged to use his newly found knowledge to educate Ghanaians about the importance of play in Ghana’s education.

Journalists, GES PROs and MoE commit to promoting play-based learning

“It was a rather interesting and informative training session and I can confidently say that I am better informed about the play-based learning methodology and its benefits than I was before. This, I am convinced, will help me to better communicate this message to Ghanaians,” he said.

For the public relations officer of the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Education Directorate, Millicent Makafui Aweke, even though she had heard about Right To Play Ghana and its works, she had scant information about the play-based learning pedagogy as an effective teaching and learning tool.

“I know about Right To Play and have seen the impact you have brought to Ghana’s education from experience, but I got a clearer understanding of how teachers are to use play to teach and when I get an opportunity to speak, I now know what to say and how exactly to say it,” she said.

She added that “for [the] government to be convinced to scale-up play-based learning across the country, I think we the beneficiaries have a role to play.”

In all, a total of 39 journalists and six PROs of GES and MoE from the Greater Accra and Volta regions, participated in the workshop on play-based learning pedagogy.

  • Debt restructuring not suitable to check falling cedi caused by BoG – JP Morgan

Global leader in financial services and US firm, JP Morgan is against a restructuring of Ghana’s debt.

According to the US firm, such an initiative would further weaken the Ghana cedi, even when an increase in Foreign Exchange Forward Auction sizes or reversal of the foreign exchange (FX) purchase policy results in short-term respite for the cedi.

JP Morgan further noted that the Bank of Ghana is responsible for the decrease in value of the local currency.

It argued that the cedi has fallen because of the B central bank’s decision to purchase dollars from mining and oil companies, inadvertently reducing forex availability within the inter-bank market is one of the reasons behind the falling value of the cedi.

It also said the loss of confidence domestically has resulted in a significant drain from the financial account, even though portfolio outflows have been relatively limited.

“The cedi has now weakened by around 60% against the US dollar this year, as uncertainties about the need for, and extent of, debt restructuring increased. The drain of FX reserves year-to-date means the Bank of Ghana (BoG) now has limited firepower to smooth FX volatility. However, we believe the main trigger for the move to 14.875 (mid) in spot over recent days can be traced to BoG’s decision to purchase dollars from mining and oil companies, inadvertently reducing FX availability within the inter-bank market.”

“Although the current account deficit (CAD) is only moderately wider, the loss of confidence domestically has resulted in a significant drain from the financial account, even though portfolio outflows have been relatively limited. Based on our risk-reward scorecard, Ghana now looks attractive, but we expect concerns about the scope of debt restructuring to continue dominating, potentially leading to even more GHS weakness, even if an increase in FX forward auction sizes or reversal of the FX purchase policy results in short-term respite for the cedi”, it added.

Furthermore, it pointed out that the Bank of Ghana’s purchase of dollars from mining companies has resulted in a squeeze in the FX market, adding, while the new FX purchase policy is only a few months old, it has shifted FX away from the secondary market, thus resulting in increased FX pressure.

In the meantime, the Central Bank has not increased the size of its fortnightly FX forward auctions, where it continues to sell $25 million, despite receiving demand amounting to $100 million per auction.

“To reduce volatility, we believe the BoG may need to use proceeds from mining sector FX purchases to increase interventions, or alternatively, reverse the FX purchase policy. Since the policy was implemented, the central bank reports that it had purchased around $84 million as at end-September [2022] and expects to have purchased $500 million by year-end”.

Change in FX policy to provide some relief in near-term

Continuing, the US banking giant said the recent volatility of the cedi is mostly policy driven, but medium-term pressure to persist

However, it stressed that a change in FX purchase policy could provide some near-term relief.

It also said the FX reserves have been drained at a breath-taking pace, noting, “Gross international reserves have declined to $6.6 billion as at end-September, from $9.7 billion at the start of the year. However, net reserves have declined at a faster pace, reaching $2.7 billion in September [2022], from $6.1 billion in January’.

At that pace, JP Morgan said gross reserves will have declined to $5.6 billion by the end of this year ($1.6 billion for net reserves), although disbursement of the $1.1 billionCocobod syndicated loan should provide a boost to FX reserves.

  • My life is under threat – Man on NPP NABCO campaign ad reveals

Nicholas Teye, who is known for being an advocate of the New Patriotic Party during the 2020 general elections has revealed that his life is currently under threat.

The 35-year-old Senior High School teacher appeared on a billboard with the inscription “Remember me. My livelihood depends on your vote” to draw Ghanaians attention to the Nations Builders Corps (NABCO) programme.

Currently, the NABCO programme no longer exists as it was brought to an end on September this year following challenges with payment of allowances.

The dissolution of the programme came at a time when many are unable to fend for themselves due to the economic crisis battling the country.

According to Nicholas Teye, aggrieved Ghanaians have turned their frustration on him since he was one of the many campaigners of the NPP.

Speaking to the media, he said he has to disguise himself whenever he moves to a public space.

“My major challenge is the threat. So any time I have to go out I have to put on a nose mask and sometimes a cap.

“Sometimes, I will be in the room, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday without going out because I am afraid if I step out I don’t know what will happen to me. The moment they see you [sic] they are angry and they want to beat you because you are part of the reasons why they are suffering. Sometimes they will call you and threaten you.

“Sometimes my wife will tell me where I am going, if I have the money I should take Uber,” Teye narrated.

Meanwhile, the teacher has revealed that he was not told that his photo will be used for a campaign billboard.

However, due to financial constraints, he later accepted for his photo to be used, and was paid GHS300 in return.

  • Change your arrogance of speech and pride of life – Kofi Oduro tells Akufo-Addo

General Overseer of Alabaster International Ministry, Prophet Kofi Oduro, has cautioned President Akufo-Addo against his pompous attitude amidst an economic crisis facing the country.

Prophet Kofi Oduro said the President has turned a deaf ear and continuous to exhibit hubris, which would in no way help resolve the country’s economic woes.

According to him, the President is exhibiting double standards by becoming exactly what he preached against when former President John Dramani was in power.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/ofori-atta-has-failed-miserably-why-cant-he-be-fired-kofi-oduro-asks-akufo-addo/

Prophet Kofi Oduro said, “they spoke carelessly without any remembrance and in the humility of your heart, God favoured you but your excellency you have become more prouder than the NDC and their Mahama.

“I stand here with a heavy heart to respectfully say this to you sir, the Lord is telling me pride takes everybody down and if you continue to be proud, you will go down without remedy.”

He continued: “your government will be the worse in the history of this country. Your excellency, if you continue in the arrogance of speech and the pride of your life, you will never see solution and you will never see remedy.

“I stand here as a man of God and as a prophet of God of not needing anything from you except your repentance and your humility; if not Ghana is going into destruction. It is only the fool that thinks that we are going in the right direction.”

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been criticised for stating that he is unmoved by threats to vote out his new Patriotic Party.

He said threats of voting against him or the NPP due to unfulfilled promises or lack of development under his tenure, especially, is a personal decision which he cannot be bothered about.

“People make those kinds of threats; they don’t frighten me. Somebody votes for you, and somebody supports you. It’s because they want you to do certain things for them. I understand that. But there is no need for people to say that if I am unable to do this and that… those are their own issues to deal with. Of course, I will do it (the road).

“But if it comes to the election and you choose to vote for the NDC, that is your own issue that is not my worry because nobody holds your thumb to vote; it is your own work. The important thing is that I understand my responsibility, and we will deal with it,” the president said during an interview on Kumasi-based Otec FM.

  • Okyenhene calls critics of Akufo-Addo villagers and witches

Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin has condemned individuals criticising the Akufo-Addo-led government.

For some time now, President Akufo-Addo has been heavily chasitised for the current state of the economy, with many referring to him as “incompetent”.

In response to the critique, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin has said such persons are uncivilized villagers, witches, and wizards who have no sense of appreciation.

He stressed that President Akufo-Addo has contributed immensely to the growth of the country, thus Ghanaians should be grateful.

According to him, the current economic hardship is a global phenomenon.

“We must appreciate the feat of the President and show him appreciation for what he has done for Ghana. We must defend and protect him”.

The Okyenhene minced no words stating that, “those insulting the President are children of villagers. They are uncivilized. No well-nurtured person will insult an elderly. If you were raised in the Church you will not insult an elder. If you are not a villager then you may be a witch or wizard”.

He consoled President Akufo-Addo that, “Not all will like you. Even Jesus Christ was crucified. It won’t bother me if they speak with sincerity but when you speak with hate, witchcraft, and envy, you must be careful because one day, one day ! one day! one day! One day! truth will overcome evil lies and envy”.

He said this Sunday, October 23, 2022 at the inauguration of Archeaconry Service held at the St. Martin Anglican Church in Kyebi in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region graced by President Akufo-Addo as part of his tour of the region.

On illegal mining, Okyenhene called on all to support the President to end the menace.

“Politicians want votes. Nobody will put his presidency on the line for the fight against galamsey. All that politicians like are votes but for him (President Akufo Addo) he doesn’t care about votes but the welfare and wellbeing of the voter is paramount to him”

President Akufo-Addo asked Ghanaians to have faith in him that, Ghana will overcome the economic crises.

“Don’t be shaken, continue to have faith in God that the hardship being experienced in the country, through God we shall overcome. Have faith in me! Have faith in me! This too shall pass,” President Akufo-Addo said.

Retired Revered Felix O. Annacy, the Bishop of the Koforidua Anglican Diocese urged Ghanaians to rally behind the government and pray for the manifold wisdom of God to direct the path of the President to take the country out of this global economic turmoil.

  • I was paid GH¢300 for NABCO campaign ad by NPP for 2020 elections – Teacher reveals

One of the many models used by the New Patriotic Party during the 2020 general elections has made shocking revelations as to how his image ended up on billboards and posters.

Nicholas Teye, a 35-year-old Senior High School teacher, appeared on a billboard with the inscription “Remember me. My livelihood depends on your vote.”

He is one of the beneficiaries of the government’s flagship programme Nations Builders Corps (NABCO).

Speaking to the media, Mr Teye said he was initially told that together with some other people, their photos were being used for calendars and magazines and there is a reward of GH¢300 attached to it.

According to him, before given the amount agreed upon, he was asked to sign an undertaking that stated that he has allowed his photo to be used for the NPP 2020 campaign.

“I was very angry when I read the notice because I told them they should have informed me earlier before snapping the photo, so I did not sign and I left.”

However, he returned to take the money after realising he was in economic distress.

“When I got home, my wife and the woman who helped me with funds to pay for the NABCO training said I should go for the money…I later went and signed for the GH ¢300…,” Nicholas Teye stressed.

Currently, Nicholas Teye, has to disguise himself before going to public spaces, as his life is reportedly under threat.

He said individuals displeased with the current running of the economy by the Akufo-Addo-led government have threatened his life.

“My major challenge is the threat. So any time I have to go out I have to put on a nose mask and sometimes a cap,” he said.

  • Guimaraes toasts ‘amazing days’ as midfielder dazzles in win at Spurs

New dad Bruno Guimaraes put two sleepless nights behind him to help Newcastle United to a 2-1 victory at Tottenham, saying the soaring Magpies “make me happy and proud”.

The Brazilian playmaker shone in north London where goals from Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron put Newcastle into a 2-0 interval lead, with Harry Kane then trimming that advantage in the second half.

Only Kieran Trippier played more passes and had more touches among the visiting players than Guimaraes, whose first full season at Newcastle is starting strongly, with the Magpies climbing to fourth in the Premier League.

Guimaraes lasted until the 89th minute when Jonjo Shelvey came on in his place, having played a key role in the Newcastle effort.

Having announced the birth of son Matteo on Friday night, Guimaraes insisted on playing for Newcastle less than 48 hours later.

He told Sky Sports: “They’ve been amazing days for me, to become a father for the first time. It’s been incredible. I’ve had two days without sleep. I would stay home, but I love to be here with these guys. They make me happy and proud, and I think we deserved it today.”

Speaking about what fatherhood meant to him, he added: “It was one of the best days of my life. I’m very happy and proud. It’s been like a dream. I don’t have words because it’s amazing what has happened in my life.

“I say thanks to my family. It’s been difficult, but it’s all worth it.”

Newcastle, under head coach Eddie Howe and their Saudi ownership, are upwardly mobile in the English game for the first time in a long time.

That is exemplified by the fact just three players have featured for 700-plus minutes in this season’s Premier League and not been on the losing side when featuring in a game: Newcastle’s Guimaraes, Sven Botman and Fabian Schar.

Newcastle have lost just once in 12 games, going down 2-1 at Liverpool in late August. Botman and Schar were unused substitutes that day and Guimaraes was not involved.

  • Kenya to start trials of ‘killer police squad’

Four policemen in Kenya who have been accused of a spate of murders, abductions and torture will be arraigned today in the capital, Nairobi.

They are said to be part of an elite squad that was disbanded by President William Ruto for reportedly executing extrajudicial killings and disappearances of suspects over several years.

Two Indian nationals who went missing in July and whose remains were discovered last week in a forest in central Kenya, are among their alleged latest victims.

The members of the now disbanded Special Services Unit face multiple charges including murder, abuse of office and conspiracy to commit felonies.

The unit was disbanded after the president received a police report on the disappearance of the two Indian nationals.

Zulfiqar Ahmad Khan and Mohamed Zaid Sami Kidwai were in Kenya to help the electoral campaign of Mr Ruto, but they went missing together with their local driver Nicodemus Mwania soon after being picked up by police in Nairobi.

Human Rights groups say their independent investigations have linked the squad and other police units to the death of more than 600 people over the past four years.

Some of the bodies were later recovered in rivers in western and northern Kenya.

A coalition of international and local NGOs is now calling on the government to prosecute the rogue officers, and to compensate the victims of police excesses.

  • Pep prepared to label Haaland ‘genius’ as striker eyes Premier League record

Pep Guardiola says Erling Haaland will be a “genius” if he can break the Premier League scoring record, and hailed the impact of Borussia Dortmund on the striker’s development.

The Norway international has scored 17 top-flight goals in 11 outings since his move from Dortmund, managing a brace in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion.

Haaland also became the first City player to score in seven consecutive home games in all competitions since Sergio Aguero in the 2017-18 season.

Alan Shearer and Andy Cole both scored 34 goals in a single campaign, sharing the English top-flight record, with Guardiola expecting Haaland to surpass that mark if he can continue his impressive form.

“If he continues to score with this rhythm, he will be a genius, with the average every game, he’s going to break the record,” the City manager said.

“But football, maybe you score then a few days later you stop scoring, I don’t know.

“All the strikers I have ever seen, [Samuel] Eto’o, [Lionel] Messi, [Robert] Lewandowski, [Thomas] Muller, [Sergio] Aguero, their ambitions to score goals, goals and more goals is normal, it has to be like that.”

While the 22-year-old forward will eye breaking more Premier League records, Haaland’s attention must first turn to a reunion at Dortmund in the Champions League.

City have already qualified for the knockout stages of UEFA’s flagship club competition but will progress as Group G winners with victory at Signal Iduna Park.

Tuesday will mark a memorable return for Haaland, who scored 86 goals in 89 appearances during his two-and-a-half-year spell at BVB, and Guardiola credited the influence of the Bundesliga side on the striker’s progression.

“It will be good [the reception he gets]. Salzburg in Austria, then Dortmund, he scored a lot of goals as well,” the Spaniard added.

“At Dortmund, that period helped, the managers he had, the team-mates he had. In a few years, he will be a better player again from the [City] team-mates he plays with, definitely.”

With a goal against his former side, Haaland would become just the sixth player to score in five or more consecutive Champions League outings on as many as three separate occasions, joining Cristiano Ronaldo (5), Messi (3), Lewandowski (3), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (3) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (3).

  • Ramaphosa outlines steps to tackle state capture in South Africa

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has addressed the nation detailing the steps his government will be taking in implementing a commission’s report on state capture.

The six-part report sought to uncover corruption, fraud and the weakening of state institutions under the administration of former president Jacob Zuma.

State capture describes a form of corruption in which businesses and politicians conspire to influence a country’s decision-making process to advance their own interests.

In a bold admission, President Ramaphosa accepted the findings by the commission of inquiry led by Judge Raymond Zondo that state capture did happen.

He announced that the commission made over 300 recommendations, some of which the government was responding to ranging from criminal prosecutions of accused persons, legislative changes, as well the establishment of an anti-corruption commission.

President Ramaphosa however was thin on detailing how his government would be implementing the commissions findings. No mention was made of members of his cabinet implicated in the report.

The corruption and fraud uncovered by the state capture report is estimated to have cost the country over $27bn (£24bn).

Mr Ramaphosa said the stolen money robbed South Africans of their future.

  • Ebola cases rising in Ugandan capital

Uganda’s national referral hospital Mulago in the capital Kampala has confirmed more than nine positive cases for the Ebola virus.

Seven of the new positive cases are from one family, while the others are a health worker and his wife.

The health worker is from a local clinic in an area just outside the city, where he treated one of the now-positive cases.

This brings the number of positive cases at the facility’s isolation unit to 14.

Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng has said that the positive cases are contacts of an individual from Kassanda, one of the most affected districts, who recently died at Mulago hospital.

There is growing concern that the outbreak could get out of hand as more cases continue to be reported in the capital.

There is an ongoing quarantine in the two most affected districts of Mubende and Kassanda, but cases have continued to rise.

Last week, officials inspected health facilities in Kampala and Entebbe region to check on their readiness to handle Ebola cases.

It has been over a month since an outbreak of the Sudan strain of Ebola was first reported in Uganda’s central region, in a rural part of Mubende district.

Official figures show there are currently 75 positive Ebola cases in the country, 28 of whom have died. These are only confirmed cases, and do not include figures for probable cases or deaths.

  • Xavi hails difference-maker Dembele following creative masterclass

Xavi credited Ousmane Dembele’s willingness to take risks after the France winger starred in Barcelona’s 4-0 thrashing of Athletic Bilbao at Camp Nou.

Barca moved back to within three points of Real Madrid on the LaLiga table by putting Athletic to the sword on Sunday, with Dembele opening the scoring before recording three assists.

By laying on goals for Robert Lewandowski, Sergi Roberto and Ferran Torres, Dembele recorded four goal involvements in a single game for Barca for the first time, in what was his 165th Blaugrana appearance.

Dembele’s tally of five assists in LaLiga is the best in the competition this season, and Xavi described the 25-year-old as a difference-maker following Barca’s victory.

“He was in the spotlight because he takes risks and it’s like a flip of a coin. He was especially motivated,” Xavi told Movistar.

“He understood everything well. He’s here to make a difference and he’s capable of doing these things.”

Barca raced into a three-goal lead within 22 minutes as Athletic collapsed, before controlling possession as Pedri repeatedly drifted inside from an unfamiliar left-wing role.

“We thought it was a game of intensity and rhythm, we understood that they were going to put a lot of pressure on us,” Xavi said of Barca’s approach.

“We put one more midfielder in and we attacked inside. We found the superiority and we matched their intensity, those were the keys. We showed solidarity and it was a complete game.”

Barca endured a run of just one win in four matches earlier this month, losing to Clasico rivals Madrid and failing to beat Inter in two Champions League meetings, leading captain Sergio Busquets to emphasise the importance of their response.

“We came from a difficult week after losing against Madrid, but we have remade ourselves with two good games and we continue to fight for the top positions here,” Busquets said.

“We came out very strong, because we knew that they are a very intense team and we wanted to match that intensity.

“We had ten minutes of great success in front of goal and that made it easy for us to break up the match.”

  • Pakistani journalist shot dead in Kenya

Renowned Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif has been shot dead in Kajiado county, which neighbours the capital Nairobi.

Police in Kenya have confirmed that he passed away on Sunday.

Local media say he was shot at a roadblock on the Nairobi-Magadi highway in a case of mistaken identity.

Police spokesperson Bruno Shioso says they are investigating the circumstances behind Mr Sharif’s death.

Mr Sharif’s wife Javeria Siddique tweeted on Monday that she had ” lost [a] friend, husband and my favourite journalist”.

Pakistan President Arif Alvi said “Arshad Sharif’s death Is a great loss to journalism and Pakistan. May his soul rest in peace and may his family, which includes his followers, have the strength to bear this loss”.

  • Rivals in Ethiopia civil war to begin peace talks

Ethiopia’s warring parties are expected to begin talks today as part of efforts to end a brutal civil war.

This war has been raging for two years.

The talks, sponsored by the African Union, will enable representatives from the government and rebel forces from the besieged northern region of Tigray meet in South Africa.

Violence returned to the region in August, shattering a five-month truce.

Fighting has escalated in Tigray with government troops and their Eritrean allies controlling key areas deep in the region.

The war has had devastating impacts with tens of thousands believed to have been killed, while millions have been left without food and access to basic services.

War crimes have been alleged and atrocities reported.

Tigrayan forces said their delegation had arrived in South Africa and their priorities include immediate cessation of hostilities, resumption of humanitarian aid and the withdrawal of Eritrean troops – something echoed by the international community.

The government said it’s committed to peace but vowed to continue with an offensive to control airports in the region.

The talks initially might not address all the details – but they sure have ignited hope for a long-suffering country.

  • Gunmen storm Somali hotel, kill at least 9 people

It has been confirmed that at least nine people have died following a jihadist attack on a hotel in southern Somalia.

The death toll may rise as close to 50 people have been injured.

Three attackers were killed by the security forces after they rampaged through the hotel in Kismayo, shooting people at random. The fourth died when he blew up his car at the entrance to the hotel.

The al Qaeda-linked al-Shabab militant group has said it carried out the attack.

Kismayo had been relatively peaceful since the jihadis were driven out in 2012.

Federal troops backed by African Union-backed forces and local clan militia have in recent weeks retaken huge territories from al-Shabab, but the group remains deadly.

  • Lenglet says Kane is to Tottenham what Messi is to Barcelona

Harry Kane’s importance to Tottenham is as significant as the impact Lionel Messi had during his career at Barcelona, according to Clement Lenglet.

France defender Lenglet is well known to Messi having played alongside him at Camp Nou and also against the Argentina great during his time at Sevilla.

Messi had been a one-club man until the start of the 2021-22 season when Barca’s perilous financial situation saw him depart for Paris Saint-Germain.

The superstar forward became the club’s all-time leading scorer and a record seven-time Ballon d’Or winner at Barca, while he counts 10 LaLiga titles and four Champions League medals among a plethora of honours won with Los Cules.

While Kane has yet to win a medal with Spurs, Lenglet – who joined Tottenham from Barca on loan in the last transfer window – talked up the impact he has on the club.

In quotes reported by the Daily Mail, Lenglet said: “When you stay a long time in the same place and you achieve so many good things with the club it means you become a part of this club.

“Your face is connected to the club. For me, Messi is always a Barca player.

“For Harry it’s the same. It’s difficult to think of Harry in another country or playing for another team. Tottenham is a big club, Harry is a big player and Harry is a big part of Tottenham.

“We speak a lot about the player and that’s important because we are players but I give the same importance to what he is like as a guy. He is an amazing example for all his team-mates.”

Describing what it is like to be play with and against Messi, Lenglet added: “You play with the greatest player in the world in my opinion.

“He helps you improve every day. I played with him [for Barca] and against him for Sevilla – it’s better with him!”

Lenglet has made just three Premier League starts for Spurs this season but said it only required a short conversation with boss Antonio Conte to persuade him to make the move to north London, where he is still adjusting to a new way of life.

“We spoke about a lot of things. He [Conte] told me if I came here I would improve because the league is so competitive, you have to be ready and focused every game,” Lenglet said.

“He said if I came here I would be happy because I would progress as a football player and it has been a good decision.

“It’s a different culture, a different way to work. I was in Spain for six years. You work one way, you think one way, the football is the same. Now, you come to England – a different league, different intensity, different way to work. It’s a good way to improve.”

Tottenham sit third in the Premier League and are out to rebound from defeat against Manchester United when they face Newcastle United on Sunday.

  • Bellingham still in demand regardless of superb form, says Dortmund director Kehl

Jude Bellingham’s superb performances for Borussia Dortmund this season have not changed how in-demand he will be in the transfer market, according to the club’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

Bellingham – who has been linked with Real Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool, among others – bagged a brace during Saturday’s 5-0 demolition job against Stuttgart in the Bundesliga to further an already scintillating season for the 19-year-old.

He has already ascended to a new level of responsibility this term, taking the captain’s armband both domestically and in the Champions League for the Black and Yellow this season.

Bellingham’s form is likely to further stoke the fires of a transfer battle for his future among several major suitors, but speaking after his showing against Stuttgart, Kehl suggested the England international’s stock was already at an all-time high.

“Jude was just as sought after before this game as he will be after this game,” he stated. “None of this changes the interest that will possibly arise in him one day.”

Kehl further suggested the best place for Bellingham to continue is with Edin Terzic’s side, though, rather than make a move elsewhere to follow in the footsteps of former team-mates Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho.

“He can develop further with us,” he added. “He can take the next steps here with us – just as he has already done this season.”

Bellingham is expected to figure in England’s squad for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, and looks in line to potentially start their opener against Iran on November 21.

  • Martinez wants legendary status at Inter as striker refutes Bayern, PSG links

Lautaro Martinez dismissed speculation over a move to Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain, stating he hopes to “become a legend” at Inter.

Chelsea, Bayern and PSG are among a host of Europe’s elite clubs that have repeatedly been linked to the forward, who will aim for World Cup glory with Argentina in November.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side remain on the hunt for a like-for-like replacement for Robert Lewandowski, while Martinez’s Argentina team-mate Lionel Messi could draw the Inter star to the French capital.

However, Martinez refuted reports of a move away from San Siro as he outlined his long-term ambitions with Inter.

“I’m fine, I’m happy here,” Martinez told Rai Sport. “I hope I can become a legend, I have a contract here and I only think about Inter.

“There are many goals from now on and we hope to continue like this.”

Martinez scored 21 goals in 35 Serie A appearances as Inter finished second to rivals Milan last season, though he endured a lean spell in front of goal at the start of this campaign.

The 25-year-old failed to find the net in five straight league games but ended that poor form with a strike against Sassuolo on Wednesday, before a brace and an assist against Fiorentina on Saturday.

A dramatic 4-3 victory over Fiorentina – courtesy of Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s fortuitous winner – lifted Inter to seventh in Serie A, but the Nerazzurri still sit five points behind leaders Napoli, who have a game in hand.

  • Man Utd vow to ‘educate fans’ following homophobic chants at Chelsea

Manchester United acknowledged some supporters engaged in homophobic chanting during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea, subsequently vowing to work with fan groups to curb such incidents.

The abuse directed towards Chelsea at Stamford Bridge occurred on the first day of Premier League football dedicating itself to Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign this season.

The Premier League confirmed during the week that every top-flight fixture between October 22 and 30 was to celebrate the LGBTQ+ inclusion initiative, with captains wearing rainbow-themed armbands.

United had also launched their own One Love campaign this weekend as they looked to “demonstrate the club’s unity and allyship with LGBTQ+ groups”.

But after Chelsea condemned the offending chants on Sunday, United pledged their continued support to fighting homophobia.

The statement read: “Homophobia, like all forms of discrimination, has no place in football. Manchester United is proud of our diverse fan base and the work we have done to reduce instances like we sadly heard at Stamford Bridge.

“We will continue to campaign for inclusivity and to tackle discriminatory abuse whether inside stadiums or online.

“This includes working with fan groups to educate fans on the offence which discriminatory language causes.”

  • Arteta will ‘always be grateful’ to Guardiola despite growing rivalry

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta “will always be grateful” to Pep Guardiola for the time they spent together at Manchester City.

Arteta was Guardiola’s assistant for three years before taking the top job at Arsenal in 2019.

The duo now find themselves going head-to-head at the top of the Premier League, with the Gunners leading the way, one place ahead of chasing champions City.

Arsenal travel to Southampton on Sunday looking to restore their four-point advantage following City’s 3-1 win against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

Speaking ahead of the game at St Mary’s, Arteta expressed his gratitude for his time at City and the things he learned working under Guardiola.

“I learned a lot about being at the top from Pep,” he said. “The standards that are set at the club are not only to win, but to win in a certain way every three days, and be extremely demanding and critical, and at the same time supportive, so it’s a good mixture.

“It was incredible to be part of that team and the evolution and how that team was built. I will always be grateful.”

The Spanish pair still speak regularly, but Arteta revealed: “Obviously we are not going to be talking about things related to our teams but of course we can speak about football as we did in the past and that’s not going to change.”

Arsenal have surprised many with their impressive start to the campaign, following up throwing away Champions League qualification at the end of last season to start this one with nine wins from 10 Premier League games.

They head to the south coast having won their last eight in all competitions, and Arteta explained how he manages to stay relaxed about everything.

“First of all, I try to sleep well. Rest is really important,” he said. “I try to look after my diet as much as I can. I don’t exercise as much as I should do, I have to be very critical of myself in that sense.

“And then I have to keep a clear mind and to do that, spending time with my loved ones is something that really helps me, my wife, my children. And really thinking, meditation, something like that helps you.”

  • Swansea continue derby dominance with victory over 10-man Cardiff

Swansea maintained their south Wales derby dominance as a 2-0 victory over 10-man Cardiff steered them into the top four of the Sky Bet Championship.

Ollie Cooper and Michael Obafemi scored either side of the interval to secure Swansea a sixth win in eight derby meetings, with Cardiff claiming just one victory in that time.

Cooper’s strike was particularly sweet for the fast-maturing midfielder who was rejected by Cardiff – the club his father Kevin played for between 2005 and 2008 – after having several trials in the Welsh capital.

Cardiff’s cause was severely hampered by playing with 10 men for 83 minutes after Callum Robinson was sent off for violent conduct.

Robinson collected a first career red card for stupidly reacting to Ben Cabango nudging him firmly from behind by throwing the ball into the face of the Wales defender.

Bluebirds boss Mark Hudson had spoken about playing with passion after their poor run of results in this fixture, but Robinson clearly overstepped the mark and could have no complaints over being banished.

Swansea took their time to make the most of the extra man, although Obafemi wasted a gilt-edged opportunity after Cooper and Luke Cundle had unlocked the visitors’ defence.

Tom Sang’s sidefoot volley from 20 yards forced Steven Benda into a flying save, but Cardiff could not prevent the tide of white-shirted attacks coming their way.

Swansea were denied a clear penalty after 34 minutes when Cedric Kipre punched away Matty Sorinola’s cross.

It was a blatant offence but Darren Bond waved play on, much to the disgust of incensed home players who had surrounded the referee.

Swansea’s sense of injustice was still simmering as Cundle pounced on Niels Nkounkou’s poor clearance.

Cundle was halted before the ball ran loose to Cooper, who curled it past the helpless Ryan Allsop and over the line off the crossbar for his third goal in four games.

Obafemi guided wide and Cooper miscued Joel Latibeaudiere’s superb cross with Swansea looking to put the game beyond Cardiff before half-time.

Harry Darling and Callum O’Dowda clashed and were cautioned as tempers rose again after the restart.

Swansea’s patient approach was almost rewarded as Obafemi turned sharply to force a fine save from Allsop.

The home side’s bookings count swelled with Obafemi and Cundle punished, and substitute Mark Harris headed over as Cardiff showed signs they were still in the contest.

But Obafemi, who scored twice in a 4-0 win at Cardiff in April, settled the issue after 67 minutes by striding on to Matt Grimes’ delightful pass and picking his spot.

It rubber-stamped Swansea’s seventh win in nine games and made it 15 goals in the last eight derbies compared to Cardiff’s one.

Presec joins defending champions Prempeh College at the finale.

  • Watford run riot against in-form Luton

Watford claimed local bragging rights with a 4-0 dismantling of near neighbours Luton in the Championship.

First-half goals from Keinan Davis and William Troost-Ekong set the tone and the visitors’ doom was sealed when goalkeeper Ethan Horvath gifted Joao Pedro a third before Ismaila Sarr completed the rout.

Hatters substitute Gabriel Osho then saw red late on for a dreadful challenge on Ken Sema.

Both games ended as 1-0 home wins two seasons ago, when Watford were promoted to the Premier League, but this was the first M1 derby watched by supporters since 2006.

Luton began a descent into non-league football soon after that but arrived at Vicarage Road as the form team thanks to seven games without defeat. Watford, in contrast, had lost three of their previous four.

The Hornets had been hard hit by injuries as well, including a broken leg at Millwall in midweek for midfielder Imran Louza, yet scored with their first attack, in the third minute.

Sarr played Hassane Kamara in on the left and Davis converted a cross into the six-yard box that was behind him with an impressive flick of a leg.

Allan Campbell fired an instant opportunity to equalise inches wide before Luke Freeman sent a header straight at goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann.

Luton captain Sonny Bradley was booked for a hefty challenge on Pedro before Horvath had to get behind a deflected effort from Edo Kayembe.

Another chance to level disappeared 10 minutes before the break however when Elijah Adebayo, picked out by Freeman, headed over the bar.

It was to prove costly as although Horvath denied Davis a second with a block, Troost-Ekong made it 2-0 in added time. Davis and Sarr both challenged Bradley for a ball to the back post and it fell to the Hornets defender for a tap-in from unmissable range.

Bradley was replaced at the break by Osho, who scooped over a decent chance at the back post.

  • Guardiola insists De Bruyne isn’t ‘playing at his top level’

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola wants more from Kevin De Bruyne who he says is not playing at his top level despite a stunning goal in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion.

The two-time Premier League Player of the Season fired in City’s third goal with a curling right-foot shot from just beyond the box to seal the points in the 75th minute.

Since De Bruyne’s Premier League debut for City in September 2015, he has scored more goals from outside the box than any other player in the competition in this period (24).

The goal was the 31-year-old Belgian’s second of the Premier League season while he has also contributed nine assists, yet Guardiola is expecting more.

“He can be better. He’s not playing at his top level, not yet,” Guardiola told reporters.

“He made a fantastic goal but he’s not playing his best. He knows. I don’t have to tell him. His dynamic still is not perfect, he knows that. I spoke with him. The goal is outstanding.

“Thanks to him we didn’t suffer in the last 15, 20 minutes when the game was more open… Kevin made a masterclass action so we win the game.”

Erling Haaland continued his remarkable form with a first-half double, meaning he became the first City player to score in seven consecutive home games in all competitions since Sergio Aguero in February 2018.

The Norwegian showcased his pace and physicality to open the scoring in the 22nd minute, before emphatically converting a 43rd-minute penalty with a powerful strike.

“I would say that [Haaland]] has the quality in bigger spaces, he can do it and in smaller spaces he can do it,” Guardiola said. “This is the reality.

“He is fantastic. The numbers and everything, the way he kicked the penalty, the quality, he did it.”

Haaland’s goal which made it 2-0 was City’s 600th in the Premier League under Guardiola, making him the third manager to achieve that feat behind Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

  • Hearts of Oak coach Slavko Matic holds first training session

Hearts of Oak coach Slavko Matic took charge of his first training on Sunday, October 23, 2022, since he was appointed last week.

Matic supervised the team’s first training session ahead of the likely resumption of the Ghana Premier League.

The 46-year-old took over from Samuel Boadu who parted ways with the Phobians ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup qualifiers against AS Real Bamako on a two-year deal.

Hearts of Oak have began residential camping in the Eastern region in bid to get in the best of shapes when the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League resumes.

The topflight still remains suspended after an Accra High court adjourned the injunction case again to Monday, October 24, 2022.

The GFA put the Premier League on hold on September 29, 2022 after a Motion on Notice for Injunction filed at the Human Rights High Court by Ashanti Gold SC and served on the GFA’s lawyers.

Ashanti Gold were demoted to the Division Two League after being found Guilty of Match Manipulation in their 2020/21 Ghana Premier League Matchday 34 game against Inter Allies FC.

Hearts of Oak are yet to win a game this season, having lost one and drawn two of the three matches played this season.

The Phobians are 14th on the league table with two points after three matches.

  • T20 World Cup: Kusal and bowlers impress as Sri Lanka outclass Ireland

Kusal Mendis carried his bat and Sri Lanka’s bowlers all impressed in an emphatic nine-wicket victory over Ireland in the T20 World Cup on Sunday.

Opening batsman Mendis made an unbeaten 68 at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart as Sri Lanka easily chased down a target of 129 despite the absence of the injured Pathum Nissanka.

Dhananjaya de Silva (31 off 25) and Charith Asalanka (31* off 22) also did their bit to open Sri Lanka’s Group 1 campaign with a resounding win.

It had been Sri Lanka’s bowlers who laid the foundations for Mendis. Maheesh Theekshana (2-19) and Wanindu Hasaranga (2-25) claimed a pair apiece, while each of their bowling unit took a wicket to limit Ireland to 128-8.

Paul Stirling opened with 34 off 25 and Harry Tector (45) ensured Ireland at least had something to defend, but the contest was decidedly one-sided.

    COOL KUSAL LEADS THE WAY

Sri Lanka’s route to this stage started with an embarrassing loss to Namibia but wins over the United Arab Emirates and Netherlands booked a spot in the Super 12.

Kusal ensured there would be no hiccup to begin this stage, whacking three sixes and five fours in his 43-ball knock, which he finished with a maximum off Simi Singh over deep-square leg, as Sri Lanka wrapped up the win with 30 balls remaining and nine wickets in hand.

    BOWLING UNIT IN SYNC

One of the most pleasing aspects for Sri Lanka was the shared responsibility with the ball. Lahiru Kumara had already snared Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie in the second over by the time Theekshana encouraged Lorcan Tucker to glove onto the stumps.

Theekshana also took the bails off George Dockrell’s wicket and Binura Fernando took out dangerman Tector prior to Hasaranga taking a couple of late wickets.

  • Torquay and Altrincham share points after eight-goal Plainmoor thriller

Dylan Crowe scored a last-gasp equaliser as rock-bottom Torquay secured a breathless 4-4 draw at home to Altrincham.

The visitors went ahead after only six minutes when Ryan Colclough found Chris Conn-Clarke for a near-post finish.

Marcus Dinanga should have doubled the lead after Alty were awarded a penalty but his effort was saved by Rhys Lovett.

But Dinanga quickly made up for his miss when he fired home in the 27th minute.

United pulled one back three minutes into the second half when Asa Hall headed home a Brett McGavin corner, and the 35-year-old slid home the equaliser with 20 minutes remaining.

Eleven minutes later Torquay led through Tom Lapslie but Jordan Hulme promptly levelled for the visitors.

The hosts went down to 10 men when Ross Marshall was shown a straight red card and Alty went back ahead through Jake Cooper, but in a dramatic ending Crowe fired home from the edge of the area.

  • Freak last-gasp Mkhitaryan goal stuns Viola

Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored a freak last-gasp goal to snatch a 4-3 victory for Inter over Fiorentina in a Serie A thriller at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

A frantic first half saw Inter race into a two-goal lead with only 15 minutes on the clock, Nicolo Barella opening the scoring and Martinez doubling the lead, but Arthur Cabral’s penalty gave the Viola hope.

Jonathan Ikone curled home an equaliser on the hour mark before Martinez doubled his tally from the penalty spot, but Luka Jovic appeared to have snatched a point with time running out.

The drama was not over, however, as substitute Lorenzo Venuti saw his attempted clearance hit Mkhitaryan on the shin and bobble into the net in one stunning final twist.

Inter got the breakthrough inside 90 seconds, Martinez winning possession high up the field and feeding a pass through to Barrella to poke a finish past Pietro Terracciano with the outside of his right boot.

The ruthless Nerazzurri doubled their advantage after 15 minutes, when Martinez skipped through the defence to drill home a low strike.

A poor challenge from Federico Dimarco on Giacomo Bonaventura gave Fiorentina hope, with a penalty awarded after a VAR review and Cabral stepping up to coolly send Andre Onana the wrong way.

Just before the hour mark, the Viola had their equaliser as first-half substitute Ikone surged into the box from the right side and shifted the ball onto his left foot before curling a fantastic shot into the top-left corner.

A VAR review with 20 minutes remaining gave Inter a chance to regain the lead, as Martinez was felled by Terraciano in the box and the striker stepped up to rifle into the top-right corner, but Jovic then equalised with an acrobatic volley following a corner.

The hosts were cruelly denied a point five minutes into time added on, when Mkhitaryan knew little above an attempted clearance from Venuti that struck him and found the back of the net to settle a classic contest.

What does it mean? Leaky defence a concern for Inzaghi

It was ultimately job done for Inter, but there will certainly be some concerns about the defensive performance of Simone Inzaghi’s side.

This was the fifth occasion in 15 matches this season that Inter have conceded at least three goals, having previously done so against Lazio, Udinese and Milan in Serie A, as well as Barcelona in the Champions League.

Cremonese. Spezia, Monza, Verona, Sampdoria and Monza are the only sides to have conceded more than the 17 goals Inter have shipped in Serie A this season.

    Marvellous Martinez shines again

Martinez continues to be linked with an array of Europe’s top clubs and his performance against Fiorentina will not go unnoticed having displayed his attacking awareness, deft ability and composure in an exceptional performance.

A brace takes his tally for the season to six Serie A goals, level at the top of the scoring charts alongside Ciro Immobile, Dusan Vlahovic and Marko Arnautovic, while his performances will provide optimism for Argentina ahead of the World Cup.

    Mammoth streak continues

Inter’s victory over Fiorentina extended their streak without a draw to 20 Serie A matches, the longest such record in Italy’s top-flight, and sees the Nerrazzuri hit that tally for the first time since January 1941.

They have now gone 11 matches against the Viola without a defeat (six wins, five draws), having lost five of their previous six in the competition beforehand.

    Key Opta Facts

    – 93 minutes and 20 seconds of play elapsed between Nicolo Barrella’s opening goal and Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s winner.

    – Lautaro Martinez is the only player who has scored at least three goals with both his right and his left foot in Serie A this season.

    – With two goals scored in his first 10 Serie A appearances this season, Jonathan Ikone has already equalled the amount of league goals netted throughout the whole last season (two in 35 games across Serie A and Ligue 1).

    – Nicolo Barella is one of three midfielders to have both scored at least four goals and delivered at least four assists in the big-5 European leagues this season, alongside Bukayo Saka and Florian Kainz

    What’s next?

Inter will look to take a huge stride towards the Champions League knockout stages against Viktoria Plzen on Wednesday, while Fiorentina host Istanbul Buyuksehir in the UEFA Conference League the following day.

  • Ancelotti’s substitutes help Los Blancos go six points clear

Carlo Ancelotti’s late substitutions paid off as Real Madrid secured a 3-1 LaLiga win over Sevilla on Saturday.

It had initially been a tale of two former Tottenham players as Luka Modric gave Madrid a quick lead on a wet night at the Santiago Bernabeu, before Erik Lamela equalised early in the second half.

Ancelotti’s changes made all the difference though, as Lucas Vazquez restored the champions’ advantage just after coming on, with fellow substitute Marco Asensio involved in the build-up, before he also laid on an assist for Federico Valverde to seal victory.

The champions showed they could cope without Karim Benzema, who paraded his Ballon d’Or trophy on the pitch but was only a spectator due to muscular fatigue, as they moved six points clear of Barcelona at the top of the table.

It took just five minutes for Madrid to take the lead, with Vinicius Junior robbing Gonzalo Montiel before racing down the left and squaring a delightful ball for Modric to tap in at the far post.

Montiel made amends for his error in the 54th minute when he dispossessed Vinicius before playing a perfect ball through to Lamela, who flicked a shot with the outside of his left foot just below the despairing right hand of Thibaut Courtois.

Ancelotti brought on Asensio and Vazquez in the 77th minute and was rewarded just two minutes later.

Asensio played a through ball to Vinicius to send him clear, before the Brazil international passed right to Vazquez, who finished with ease.

It was soon game over as another Madrid attack saw Asensio lay the ball off to the in-form Valverde, who unleashed a fierce effort from just outside the box into the top-left corner of the net to seal all three points.

What does it mean? Madrid march on

It has been a sensational start to the season for Los Blancos, winning 10 and drawing one of their 11 LaLiga games.

This was far from a routine win as Sevilla looked good value for a point before Ancelotti’s subs made a big impact.

The champions look like they will take some stopping in their quest to win the title once again.

    Vinicius shines again

In the absence of Benzema, Vinicius had a big impact on the game. He claimed two assists, laying the ball on a plate twice for team-mates to tap in.

Since the start of the last season, no LaLiga player has provided more assists than him in all competitions (21).

    Another slow start costs Sevilla

Although it was a relatively late show that took a point away from them and handed Jorge Sampaoli his first loss since returning as head coach, it was yet another slow start from

Sevilla that put them on the back foot.

Modric’s fifth-minute strike was the third goal they have conceded in the first 15 minutes of league games, with only Getafe (five) and Girona (four) conceding more this season.

    What’s next?

Both are back in Champions League action on Tuesday, with Real Madrid away to RB Leipzig, while Sevilla host Copenhagen.

  • Xi confirmed as party leader for third term

Xi Jinping has a third term as China’s leader, in a break with recent precedent.

He has also introduced his new top team – which includes former Shanghai party chief Li Qiang as the new premier.

Saturday’s closing ceremony saw Xi’s predecessor Hu Jintao escorted out, apparently unwillingly, with state media later saying he had not been well.

Xi, 69, is arguably the most powerful party chief since the first communist-era leader Mao Zedong who died in 1976.

So far the party congress has proceeded smoothly for Xi. The constitution has been amended to further reflect his authority; most of the Central Committee membership revealed yesterday reflect his allies and their factions.

But Xi’s grip on power comes amid mounting challenges to the Chinese economy.

For the first time in years, China will miss its annual growth target (5.5% this year). Some Chinese have lost their homes amid a property crisis.

Covid lockdowns have also driven many to their limits across the country. Almost all domestic outcry on China’s internet this year has been about the toll of Xi’s flagship zero-Covid policy.

But in his speech as the party congress opened Xi doubled down on zero-COVID. saying it was saving lives, and emphasised ideology rather than coming up with specific solutions.

  • Sam Jonah recommends domestication as solution to economic hardships

Ghanaian businessman, Sir Samuel Esson Jonah, has indicated the current economic hardship should transform the Ghanaian economy from an import-driven and dependent kind to one that sees the people eat what they grow.

Speaking at the 60th anniversary of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), on Thursday, October 20, the Business magnate said:

“Our insatiable appetite and high demand for any and everything foreign is central to many of the challenges we are facing as a country,” he observed.

“Personally, I feel that unless and until concrete measures and actions are implemented to have an integrated economy, which has at its core, less dependence on foreign goods, I am afraid our economic challenges would be further exacerbated.

“Without a doubt, we should start with what we eat. I think it is unconscionable that most of the tilapia we consume comes from China. Our frozen chicken comes from the Netherlands and the US and, of course, we continue to rely on Burkina Faso for our onions and tomatoes.

“Now, I’m told China is exporting cassava and Gari and Yams. The cost of food is a major part of any nation’s economy and it behoves on all of us to do whatever we can to improve accessibility and affordability.”

The Chancellor of UCC during his speech noted that the University is supposed to lead in ensuring efficient implementation of the government’s agriculture policies.

Sir Sam Jonah said, “my charge to UCC is that we lead the national effort in ensuring that we use cutting-edge technologies and research to assist with the efficient implementation of government’s agriculture policies.

“Our School of Agriculture must lead the charge in the production of improved varieties of our local foodstuffs, better yielding crops, cheaper poultry and aquacultural feeds etc. We are entrusting you with the responsibility of ensuring we grow what we eat and eat what we grow.”

He continued: “In this regard, I expect you to establish and forge strong partnerships, bonds and collaborations with institutions such as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research and other relevant local bodies pertinent to the development of our Agricultural sector.

“This urgency and scope of the current global challenges and our own, highlights the importance of cooperation. This is my charge to you and I believe that as a University the success in this endeavour will make us more relevant in the noble fight for our economic emancipation. We owe this to this country.”

UCC @ 60 durbar saw past and present officials of the University, including former Vice Chancellors and Chancellors, in attendance. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was the Special Guest of Honour and an honorary alumnus.

  • NDC Elections Directorate nullifies elections conducted in 3 constituencies

The National Elections Directorate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has nullified elections held in three constituencies in the country.

The constituencies are Atiwa West, Mpraeso, and Afram Plains South.

The Elections Directorate of the party said the elections were in clear violation of an earlier directive of the Directorate for the postponement of elections in those constituencies.

“The National Election Directorate wishes to place on record that the said purported elections in those constituencies are illegal and hence, null and void. The party does not and will not recognize those elections and their outcomes.”

The NDC’S Elections Directorate said its decision includes other constituencies who have violated other directives in the conduct of their elections, “particularly the inclusion of branches that are excluded from partaking in the elections and the exclusion or inclusion of persons who have been either qualified or disqualified from being on the ballot sheet by the appeals process.”

It said it will publish a full list of the constituencies in the coming days.

The Elections Directorate said it will in due course conduct elections in these constituencies.

“The party will in the meantime investigate the unsanctioned elections in these constituencies and punish all the culprits involved.”

It cautioned other constituencies affected by FEC’s earlier directive to take a cue from this and strictly observe all the directives and guidelines pertaining to the conduct of the ongoing constituency elections.

  • Akufo-Addo must address Ghanaians on current economic woes – Economist

An economist and political risk analyst says it is important that President Akufo-Addo addresses Ghanaians on the current economic hardships.

According to Dr. Theophilus Acheampong, the President must tell Ghanaians what measures his government is working on to get the nation out of the crisis.

In his view, an address from the President on the issue will calm down the citizenry.

    President Akufo-Addo

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, he insisted that the President needs to speak to Ghanaians urgently.

“I think we are at the time where the president must address the nation.

“The President needs to speak to all of us forthrightly about the challenges that we face and what they are doing to get us out of it because amidst all of these crisis there is some information vacuum or you may even call it policy which must be dealt with,” he said.

Meanwhile also speaking on the same show, a political scientist at the University of Ghana lambasted the government for solely relying on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to address the current economic crisis.

Professor Ransford Gyampo says the Bretton Woods Institution cannot be the panacea for the country’s problems.

According to him, the ‘one size fit’ approach will not work for the nation in these times.

Prof Gyampo thus asked government to start working on other solutions.

“The IMF is not and can certainly not be a panacea to our woes and it appears that in our country, we have a certain one way propagandist stomach direction approach to solving every problem. They must be up and doing,” he said.

Meanwhile Ministry of Finance on Friday said the Government and IMF have reached a clear path towards the final details of a programme with the goal of reaching a Staff-Level Agreement by the end of the year.

This follows meetings between the Government and the IMF advancing negotiations towards a Fund-supported Programme in Washington (D.C).

  • Cargo transport operators declare indefinite strike over alleged harassment by police

The National Cargo Transport Operators has declared an indefinite strike over the alleged harassment by the police at Enyinam in the Eastern Region.

According to the group, they will not offer their services anymore until the situation is addressed by the relevant authorities.

The National President of the Cargo Transport Operators Association, Alhaji Mohammed Tanko told the media that “one driver was harassed by the Police at Enyinam. He was arrested for no apparent reason.”

According to him, this is only one of several other incidents which is making our work difficult.

The group most affected by the alleged actions of the security agency, he said are those who offload charcoal from the Northern part of the country to the Greater Accra Region.

Alhaji Mohammed Tanko mentioned that “we feel we are being victimised by the police” thus want the situation to be addressed.

“We are going to lay down our tools till we get assurances from the relevant authorities,” he stressed.

Should the National Cargo Transport Operators embark on the strike action as indicated, traders would be affected as they would not have a feasible medium to convey their goods from the farms to the market.

  • I won’t accept defeat in galamsey fight – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has said he will not throw in the towel despite the many challenges his government is facing in ending the activities of illegal miners in the country.

He showcased a determined spirit in the “galamsey” fight during his three-day tour of the Eastern Region which began on Friday, October 21, 2022.

”Many measures are being put in place. Community mining exercises are going on, and it is very important that we show determination. We will not relax. I am very determined. I am not going to accept defeat in this fight. I am determined to win the fight against galamsey,” the President said.

The President’s comment reiterates his government’s commitment towards the fight against illegal mining.

The menace has contributed to massive destruction of lands and water bodies in most mining areas across the country, with constant demand by the public for the government to act on the situation.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has charged his appointees and New Patriotic Party (NPP) members to embrace government’s tough measures in winning the fight against illegal mining.

This, he says, will help Ghanaians repose confidence in the party and vote for them in the next election, thereby making the NPP’s quest to break the eight a reality.

“Let us work together to get rid of this menace. I believe that if the people of Ghana see a determined effort on our part, which yields results, our water bodies are clearing, our lands are being reclaimed, and our forest zones are being preserved, it will help them enable us break the eight”, he stressed.

Currently, the Operation Halt II team led by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is destroying all mining equipment found on water bodies and forest reserves.

  • Ronaldo compares himself to Messi and Maradona in football’s GOAT debate

Ronaldo Nazario ranks himself alongside the likes of Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona as part of a “very special group” of football’s greatest ever players.

Legendary forward Ronaldo led Brazil to their most recent World Cup triumph 20 years ago, scoring eight goals as Luiz Felipe Scolari’s team sealed the country’s fifth title in Japan and South Korea.

No Brazilian has ever bettered Ronaldo’s tally at a single edition of the tournament, while his total return of 15 World Cup goals has only been beaten by Germany’s Miroslav Klose (16).

While Ronaldo believes his exploits put him in the pantheon of footballing greats, he told the Guardian it was difficult to compare his abilities to those of players from different generations.

Asked to choose between seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi and another Argentina icon in Maradona, Ronaldo said: “That’s unfair!

“I think there is a very, very special group where you have Diego, Messi, [Johan] Cruyff, [Franz] Beckenbauer, Pele, [Marco] Van Basten, Ronaldinho. I would include myself.

“Let the fans say, let them debate it in the bars. But you can’t rank them, can’t compare generations.

“People call me the ‘original’ Ronaldo but there were others – and they weren’t false.

“I’m not the only one, and more will come along and be better than me in everything. I did what I could, the best I could.”

Brazil’s hopes of repeating their 2002 World Cup win will depend largely on the form of Neymar, who has been involved in 42 per cent of the Selecao’s World Cup goals since making his tournament debut in 2014 (8/19 – six goals, two assists).

Ronaldo compared the abilities of the Paris Saint-Germain forward to those of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting no football fan could fail to enjoy watching him play.

“People love him a lot,” Ronaldo added of Neymar. “If we talk specifically about football, I doubt there’s anyone who doesn’t love him. His private life transcends football, but I’m not interested.

“He’s daring, has skill, variety, is quick, scores goals, has personality. You could compare him to Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, even though they are from a different planet.

“On the pitch Neymar is one [thing], then people mix in all the other stuff.”

  • Benzema muscle fatigue blow for Real Madrid as Ballon d’Or star suffers setback

Karim Benzema faces time on the Real Madrid sidelines after the Ballon d’Or winner was revealed to be suffering with muscular fatigue in his left leg.

With one month to go until France begin their World Cup campaign against Australia, the news of Benzema’s exertions taking their toll may be of some concern to Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps.

For now, there is no suggestion Benzema will not be fit to play a full role in the Qatar 2022 tournament, but the injury announcement is a reminder all players are susceptible amid a packed fixture schedule for Europe’s top clubs.

A Madrid club statement read: “Following tests carried out today on Karim Benzema by the Real Madrid medical services, he has been diagnosed with muscular fatigue in the quadricep muscle of his left leg. His recovery will be monitored.”

Reports in Spain said that, as well as missing Saturday’s game against Sevilla, Benzema was also expected to be absent for the Champions League fixture at RB Leipzig on Tuesday.

However, Benzema could be back for the LaLiga clash with Girona on Sunday, October 30, sports daily Marca reported.

Benzema won the Ballon d’Or for his feats last season, when his 44 goals in 46 games helped Madrid triumph in LaLiga and the Champions League.

He scored in last Sunday’s 3-1 win over Barcelona as Madrid went clear at the top of the Spanish top flight, before netting again on Wednesday in the 3-0 victory at Elche, where he played the full 90 minutes.

  • IMF is not a panacea to our economic woes – Prof Gyampo

Political scientist at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has chastised the government for relying solely on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to resolve its economic woes.

He asserted that the Bretton Woods Institution cannot be the panacea for the country’s challenges.

“The IMF is not and can certainly not be a panacea to our woes and it appears that in our country, we have a certain one way propagandist stomach direction approach to solving every problem. They must be up and doing,” Prof Gyampo said while contributing to a panel discussion on Newsfile on Saturday, October 22,   monitored by The Independent Ghana.

He argued that the ‘one size fit’ approach will not work for the nation in these times, thus asked government to take a look at other alternatives.

Due to the downgrade of Ghana’s credit worthiness, the country has not been able to access funds from international bodies. The government has therefore run to the Fund for assistance.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance has revealed that the government and IMF have reached a clear path towards the final details of a programme with the goal of reaching a Staff-Level Agreement by the end of the year.

This follows meetings between the Government and the IMF advancing negotiations towards a Fund-supported Programme in Washington (D.C).

In an update to citizens, the Ministry stated that “a pathway towards fiscal sustainability has also been extensively discussed, and the Government of Ghana and the IMF remain fully committed to the goal of reaching a Staff-Level Agreement on a Programme within the shortest possible time.”

The Ministry indicated in pursuance of the Staff-Level Agreement, negotiations with the IMF will continue in Accra, as the IMF team is expected within the next few weeks.

  • King Charles III set to re-perform his mother’s final duty in history-making moment

King Charles III is following in Queen Elizabeth’s footsteps much sooner than expected.

Liz Truss has resigned from her role as British Prime Minister. As a result, King Charles will make history by swearing in a new PM less than two months after ascending the throne.

Truss’s tenure will also make history as the shortest for a British PM…ever.

The change likely holds special significance to King Charles.

One of the last constitutional duties his late mother performed before her death was appointing Truss as the new Prime Minister (this is a largely ceremonial duty as the position of PM traditionally goes to the leader of whichever party in Parliament gets the most seats in a general election).

And now, before his coronation, he’s already following suit.

King Charles will need to appoint a new Prime Minister as soon as posible. No details have been shared about who will take over for Truss, so be on the lookout for more information.

If you recall, Truss was sworn in as Prime Minister just two days before Queen Elizabeth tragically passed away at age 96.

During her reign, the queen welcomed a total of 15 Prime Ministers. While King Charles still has a long way to go, BBC journalist Philip Sim joked that King Charles is on track to make history (again).

“On current pace, King Charles could surpass his mother’s record of 15 prime ministers before the end of 2024,” he wrote on Twitter.

It’s the end of another era.

  • Kepa finally fulfilling his promise under Potter

Kepa Arrizabalaga’s time as Chelsea’s No1 appeared to be over — but the Spaniard has emerged from the blue to win back his starting spot.

Edouard Mendy had been the West Londoners’ first-choice stopper under Thomas Tuchel, with the former Athletic Bilbao man consigned to the role of understudy.

But Graham Potter’s appointment coincided with an injury to Mendy and Kepa has been afforded a fresh chance between the sticks.

Ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Manchester United this afternoon, we take a look at how the Spaniard has begun restoring his reputation at Stamford Bridge.

    Rollercoaster ride

Kepa was signed for £72million in the summer of 2018 — a world-record fee for a goalkeeper.

However, the Spaniard failed to live up to expectations in SW6, making a plethora of mistakes and notably refusing to come off ahead of a penalty shootout in the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City in 2019 — which Chelsea lost.

In September 2020, Mendy was brought in from Rennes to replace Kepa and it seemed to be only a matter of time until the 11-cap international left the club.

But an injury to Mendy handed the 28-year-old a chance and he has started every one of Chelsea’s Champions League games this season, as well as the last four in the Premier League.

It appears Kepa has — at least for now — convinced Potter that he deserves to be the Blues’ No1 once more, with Mendy fit again but on the bench.

    Hero against Villans

Kepa has certainly been repaying his manager’s faith — not least against Aston Villa last weekend when he made a number of sensational saves to help secure a 2-0 victory.

After that game, Potter was understandably effusive about his goalkeeper’s qualities.

He said: “It was a world-class performance [from Kepa], especially in the first half.

“I’m really pleased for him, he has had a tough period for us at times but he contributed to the game.

“He is contributing to us with clean sheets and how we’re trying to play and the environment around the place.

“I’ve got to say, all three goalkeepers we’ve had here have been really, really good in that regard — supporting each other, providing good competition and that picks everybody’s level up and Kepa has found a fantastic level today.

“He made some brilliant saves that have kept us in the game and allowed us to win the points, so [I’m] really pleased for him.”

The former Brighton boss will have been equally delighted with Kepa’s display against Brentford in midweek.

    Sweeper Kepa

An area in which Kepa has been notably proficient this season is coming off his line to deal with danger.

In the Champions League, only Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris has made more keeper sweeper regains (five) than his four.

Additionally, Kepa ranks inside the top 10 goalkeepers in the competition for possessions won in the defensive third (four) and has even won possession in the middle third twice — more than any other player in his position.

Furthermore, he is one of a select group of stoppers in the Champions League to have registered an interception or a headed clearance — demonstrating his ability to rush out and sweep up danger behind his defenders.

    Keeping steady

Kepa Arrizabalaga has conceded just twice in the Champions League so far this season
Kepa Arrizabalaga has conceded just twice in the Champions League so far this season

Kepa also appears to have ironed out some of the errors in his game.

The Ondarroa native had a propensity to let in soft goals early on in his Chelsea career — but there has been no sign of that so far this term.

In his four Champions League appearances so far, he has not made a single error leading to a shot or a goal and has not conceded from outside the box either, saving three such attempts.

    Playmaking pedigree?

Kepa Arrizabalaga is not heavily involved in Chelsea's build-up from deep
Kepa Arrizabalaga is not heavily involved in Chelsea’s build-up from deep

Despite his many qualities, Kepa does not possess the same ability with his feet as goalkeepers like Ederson or Alisson.

He has attempted just 98 passes in the Champions League this term, completing only 69 and taking just 121 touches.

Kepa ranks outside the top 20 goalkeepers in all three of those metrics and is evidently not heavily utilised in Chelsea’s build-up.

But that will not be too much of a concern for Potter if he continues to turn in the kind of reliable performances we have witnessed this season.

  • Continuous depreciation of cedi getting unbearable – Prof. Lord Mensah

Economist, Professor Lord Mensah says comments by the Finance Minister urging Ghanaians not to panic over the continuous depreciation of the cedi cannot be accepted.

According to Bloomberg, the Ghana cedi is the worst-performing amongst 148 currencies in the world, having depreciated by nearly 52% this year.

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta has said increased importations during Christmas are accounting for the rush for the dollar and assured that once a deal is concluded with the IMF, the slide in the value of the cedi will be halted.

But in an interview, Professor Lord Mensah said, until Ghana moves away from import dependency, there will be constant pressure on the cedi, leading to astronomical depreciation in value as is happening currently.

“We have a cause to worry because we do not produce much in Ghana. So, once everything on the shelf is imported with the dollar, the Minister cannot say we cannot worry about the dollar. We need to get worried about the dollar because we know getting to Christmas, the demand for the dollar is high adding to the depreciation of the dollar and the rate for this year alone is unbearable.”

The Ghana cedi has lost close to 50 percent of its value since the beginning of the year.

Currently, the cedi is selling at over GH¢13.00.

Ghana’s inflation for September 2022 stands at 37.2 percent while Producer Price Inflation for the same month has risen to 45.5 percent.

Despite these, government says Ghana’s economy is recording some marginal growth despite recent ravaging shocks.

  • Trump ordered to testify to January 6 committee

The congressional panel investigating last year’s Capitol riot has issued a legal summons ordering former President Donald Trump to testify to lawmakers.

Addressing him, the document reads: “You were at the center of the first and only effort by any US President to overturn an election.”

It goes on: “You knew this activity was illegal and unconstitutional.”

A lawyer for Mr Trump accused the lawmakers on the committee of “flouting norms”.

The former president has lambasted the inquiry as a ruse designed to distract voters from the “disaster” of Democratic governance with US midterm elections looming next month.

Mr Trump could face criminal charges if he does not comply with the subpoena.

He has until 4 November to provide documents to the 6 January committee, and must appear for deposition testimony on or about 14 November.

If Mr Trump refuses to testify to Congress or hand over the requested material, the committee could refer the matter to the Department of Justice – potentially triggering criminal proceedings.

The subpoena was issued just hours after former Trump strategist Steve Bannon was fined $6,500 (£5,800) and sentenced to four months in jail for contempt of Congress.

He was convicted after refusing to give the committee testimony or documents.

Another Trump aide, Peter Navarro, is due to stand trial for contempt of Congress next month after refusing to co-operate with a similar subpoena.

The select committee is looking into Trump supporters’ violent storming of the US Capitol building on 6 January, 2021.

The panel’s seven Democrats and two Republicans unanimously voted last week to force the Republican to testify about his role in the riot.

Lawmakers say Mr Trump egged on his supporters to reject the 2020 presidential election result, leading them to storm the halls of Congress in an effort to prevent Joe Biden from being certified as the winner.

In a letter that accompanied the subpoena, chairman Bennie Thompson and vice-chairwoman Liz Cheney said the committee had “assembled overwhelming evidence, including from dozens of your former appointees and staff, that you personally orchestrated and oversaw a multi-part effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election”.

“You took all of these actions despite the rulings of more than 60 courts rejecting your election fraud claims and other challenges to the legality of the 2020 presidential election, despite having specific and detailed information from the Justice Department and your senior campaign staff informing you that your election claims were false, and despite your obligation as President to ensure that the laws of our nation are faithfully executed,” the letter added.

Mr Trump’s legal team slammed the subpoena.

“We understand that, once again, flouting norms and appropriate and customary process, the Committee has publicly released a copy of its subpoena,” said lawyer David Warrington.

“As with any similar matter, we will review and analyse it, and will respond as appropriate to this unprecedented action.”

If Republicans retake control of the House of Representatives after November’s midterm elections – which is widely expected – the 6 January committee’s work will come to an end and the panel will be disbanded.

Ms Cheney – the top Republican on the panel and the daughter of former Republican vice-president Dick Cheney – will leave in January after losing a primary race in August to a Trump-backed challenger. The committee’s only other Republican member, Adam Kinzinger, plans to retire at the end of this congressional session.

  • James ‘devastated’ by injury but will ‘do everything’ to win World Cup race

Reece James has described the knee injury that threatens to rule him out of the World Cup as “devastating”, but says he will do everything in his power to feature in Qatar.

The right-back sustained the injury in Chelsea’s Champions League win at Milan last week, and was ruled out for eight weeks after seeing a specialist.

If James were to miss the tournament, it would represent a severe blow for England manager Gareth Southgate, who is facing the prospect of a selection crisis on the right of his defence.

Manchester City’s Kyle Walker is also battling to be fit after suffering an abdominal injury earlier this month, while Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold has come under fire for his recent performances.

However, Chelsea boss Graham Potter said last week that James would “fight” to return in time for the tournament, and the defender has now made a similar pledge.

“It’s obviously devastating and you know the World Cup is only a month away,” James said on his YouTube channel. “As a kid, growing up, I always wanted to go and this is my first opportunity.

“I’ll do everything I can to try to be there, but I’m obviously devastated. Just [the] injury came at the wrong time. But every day, we need to be grateful and thankful.

“I’ll keep you updated with what’s happening on a day-to-day basis, and I’ll touch base soon.”

England begin their World Cup campaign in less than a month’s time, facing Iran in their Group B opener on November 21.

  • Martinez confident Man Utd are on ‘patient’ path towards silverware under Ten Hag

Lisandro Martinez believes Manchester United are on track to compete for honours under Erik ten Hag, but says the Red Devils must remain grounded following their turnaround in fortunes.

United began the campaign with humiliating back-to-back losses to Brighton and Hove Albion and Brentford, but have won six of their eight subsequent Premier League fixtures to sit fifth in the table.

Ten Hag’s team could now leapfrog Chelsea into a top-four spot when they face the Blues at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, having won three of their last four away league games.

United claimed one of their most impressive results of the season last time out, as goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandes downed Tottenham 2-0 at Old Trafford, and Martinez says that display was the culmination of much work from Ten Hag’s team.

Asked whether Wednesday’s win represented their best performance of the season, Martinez told Sky Sports: “I think so. We did a great job.

“We controlled the game, the whole 90 minutes. I think they had only one chance in the first half and then we were solid in defence.

“I am really happy because we tried really hard to play at this level. We want to play this way. It is fantastic to do it.”

Martinez was heavily criticised for his own role in United’s early-season woes, with detractors suggesting the Argentina international did have the necessary physical attributes to thrive in England.

But the former Ajax man stressed the importance of remaining calm as he added: “Sometimes we have to be patient, you know. Especially in the beginning, we know that we did not play how we wanted.

“But it is part of football, we learn. It is experience. We have a new team, a new system. Now we have to keep going.

“It is difficult. Especially in football, you don’t have time. If you lose you are a really bad player or a really bad team. But we know what we are. We have to be calm, we have to be patient, and always try hard.

“For sure, our ambition is to win titles, to put Manchester United where they deserve [to be].

“I think we are in a good way to do it. But we have to keep our feet on the ground, we have to be humble and take it step by step.”

Martinez was also asked to name his defensive role model, and selected another fiery Argentine, one who participated in a Premier League title win with United in the 2006-07 season.

“Gabriel Heinze is my idol,” Martinez added. “I love him. I love the way he played, very aggressive, good mentality, good mentality in the duels.

“[He played] every game as a final. He was a top player. I try to play like him. We are a bit different as well, but I like his mentality.”

United are bidding to improve on a poor record at Stamford Bridge – their 20 per cent win rate (6/30) in away Premier League games against Chelsea is their worst record against any side they have faced more than twice on the road.

  • Beatles’ Revolver: ‘It’s time travel’ says Giles Martin

Last month, in Abbey Road’s legendary Studio 3, Giles Martin performed a magic trick.

He was there to unveil something that should have been technically impossible – a remixed, reinvigorated version of The Beatles‘ seventh album, Revolver.

The band’s first record after announcing their retirement from live performance, it saw them explore new sonic territories and styles of composition, from the chamber pop of Eleanor Rigby to the kaleidoscopic eruptions of Tomorrow Never Knows.

It took 300 hours to record (almost three times as long as the Beatles’ previous album, Rubber Soul) as they experimented with tape loops, back-masking and LSD.

Fans have long been clamouring for an expanded edition of the record – but there was a problem.

Unlike their later albums, the Beatles recorded Revolver’s basic tracks direct to tape, standing in a circle, playing as a band. That made it almost impossible for future generations to separate and isolate the instruments and vocals.

Back in Abbey Road, Martin cues up Taxman, Revolver’s tense and brittle opening track.

“What would it sound like without George Harrison’s guitar?” he asks, pulling down a fader that eliminates him from the mix. Next, he drops out Paul McCartney’s bass, so the only thing you hear is Ringo Starr’s drum kit.

It’s a revelation. The kick drum pedal squeaks on every beat, and the snare reverberates off the studio walls. No-one, not even Ringo, would have heard those details at the time.

Martin compares it to being given a cake and having the ability to break it down to its constituent ingredients. And it’s only possible because of the technology that Peter Jackson’s audio team created for the Get Back documentary.

“The dialogue editor [Emile de la Rey] was doing a really good job of removing the guitars from the dialogue, and I said to him: ‘Let’s have a look at Revolver. Can you separate the guitar, bass and drums?’” says Martin.

“He did a rough pass and it was so much better than anything I’ve ever heard. I said: ‘OK, we need to work on this’, and it got to a stage where it became extraordinarily good.”

Martin isn’t clear on how the de-mixing process works, but he knows it involves elements of AI and machine learning.

“It has to learn what the sound of John Lennon’s guitar is, for instance, and the more information you can give it, the better it becomes.

“So we were going through the tapes just looking for bits where someone played a guitar with no-one else playing – and that’s how the computer can can go: ‘Okay, this is what I’ll extract’.

“But all that means is that, when people listen to the record, the band don’t have to be on each other’s lap.”

The Beatles in Abbey RoadIMAGE SOURCE,APPLE CORPS LTD

For his new version of Taxman, Martin discards the original’s gimmicky stereo mix, which placed the instruments in the left speaker and the vocals in the right, Now, the band spreads out across the soundstage, putting the listener in the middle of a Beatles performance.

It’s a technique Martin applies to the whole album. Compared to the muddy CD mixes that emerged in the 1980s, the new Revolver is bristling with life, full of presence and attack.

“People forget that it’s just a young band playing in the studio,” says Martin. “Everything is fairly aggressive. Everything is in your face. Everything the Beatles recorded is a little bit louder than you think it is.”

Eleanor Rigby is a perfect example. Instead of using the string section as a soft underscore, Paul asked them to play in sharp, staccato stings inspired by Bernard Herrmann’s score for Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.

“Which is a funny influence if you think about it – you take the shower scene with a woman being stabbed and put it on Eleanor Rigby,” reflects Martin.

An expanded, deluxe edition of Revolver captures the strings being recorded at Abbey Road, with Giles’s father George Martin arranging the musicians on the fly.

“Do you want them to play the chords without vibrato?” he asks McCartney, who listens to several options before declaring he can’t tell the difference.

“All those years of learning,” the musicians grumble good-naturedly, “and he says it sounds the same.”

McCartney eventually opts to lose the vibrato, giving the recording its razor-sharp immediacy.

“What impresses me is the speed of thought,” says Martin. “You have to remember that 10 minutes before that conversation, no-one would have ever heard the Eleanor Rigby strings before. It’s an amazing session.”

It’s one of many insights on the box set, from a rehearsal of And Your Bird Can Sing where the band can’t stop laughing – “It reminds you that maybe there was some pot smoked during that time” – to a previously unheard demo of Yellow Submarine.

While Beatles historians have always attributed the song to McCartney, the newly unearthed work tape is pure Lennon. He strums a sad acoustic guitar figure and sings: “In the town where I was born / No-one cared, no-one cared…”

It’s unrecognisable from the bumptious singalong it became – the words Yellow and Submarine are conspicuously absent – but Martin says the development of the song shows the Beatles at their most harmonious.

“There’s an acceptance of ‘OK, I’ve got this very sensitive and sad song, and Paul’s going to turn that into a hit for children’. That didn’t happen later on Abbey Road or Let It Be, and I think that’s the key to Revolver: They absolutely accepted each other’s direction.”

The scale of their confidence was such that the first song they tackled in the studio was Lennon’s nightmarish sound collage Tomorrow Never Knows, full of sitar drones, processed vocals and unholy seagull calls (actually a speeded-up recording of McCartney laughing).

Derided at the time, it’s now recognised as a landmark of psychedelia, and a pioneering example of sampling and manipulating tape loops.

“And the thing about the Beatles is they never tried it again,” says Martin. “I can’t work out the mentality of it, in all honesty, what was going through people’s minds.

“Even my dad, you know? He was always pretty straight-laced, but he just accepted ‘Okay, well this is what we’re doing’!

“I always think it’s like surfing, in a way. There’s been very rare times in my life where I’ve done creatively good things but most of the time, I’m treading water or trying to avoid getting hit by the waves.

“But the Beatles spent their whole time on the crest of a wave.”

Which raises the question, why remix the album at all?

There are Beatles fans who refuse to listen to Martin’s remasters and remixes, accusing him of rewriting history.

“I kind of embrace them because, in a way, they’re absolutely right,” Martin says. “There’s no reason why you should listen to these mixes. It’s not like I’ve deleted anything.”

Instead, he likens the process to sandblasting the exterior of St Paul’s Cathedral, and seeing it as Sir Christopher Wren would have done in 1697.

The surviving Beatles supervised the mixes (McCartney told him off for being “too polite” with And Your Bird Can Sing) and the idea is to preserve their songs for a new generation who primarily listen on headphones, where the original hard-panned version of Taxman is awkward and disorientating.

“I remember mixing Strawberry Fields and the young guy working at Abbey Road with me had never heard the song before,” says Martin. “And there’s no reason why he should. It’s bloody old.

“But there’s also no reason why a 26-year-old Paul McCartney shouldn’t sound like a 26-year-old does now.

“So essentially, what we’re doing is time travel. And I like that even now, 56 years on, we’re trying to break new ground. Because that’s what the Beatles did.”

  • PSG boss Galtier encouraged by ‘interesting’ formation switch against Ajaccio

Paris Saint-Germain boss Christophe Galtier was impressed by how his team played while utilising three central midfielders in their 3-0 victory against Ajaccio on Friday.

In the match, Galtier started Renato Sanches, Marco Verratti and Fabian Ruiz as the three midfielders in a 4-3-3 setup, after spending much of the season playing a 3-4-3 with two central midfielders.

The breakthrough came in the 24th minute when Lionel Messi assisted Kylian Mbappe for the opener, and that score would hold until Messi got on the end of a spectacular team move in the 78th minute, where Mbappe would return the favour with an assist for the second goal.

Mbappe then finished things off in the 82nd, again off an assist from Messi, and their chemistry drew praise from Galtier in his interview with PSGTV.

“We scored another two magnificent goals [in the second half],” he said. “Of course, the move from Leo [to] Kylian, [back to] Leo is an extraordinary goal on this difficult pitch, but it’s also the third goal.

“The link-up between Leo and Kylian really worked well – it’s very good for the team and it’s very good for them. They are players that need to score and that’s very good for them.

“It also allowed me to make changes to give certain players a break, and I liked the way that our midfield played too.”

“[Playing with three central midfielders] appealed to me more, it was interesting,” he said. “We’ll see if we start like that on Tuesday [against Maccabi Haifa, in the Champions League].

“With three midfielders, it allows us to be more present, in the heart of the game and to be present on our attacks.

“Messi? He’s a genius in that regard. It was good with Kylian, it’s not for nothing that we have a quality offensive sector.

“We changed our organisation to better find them, better connected. There was a connection with Leo and Kylian.”

  • U17 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria beat USA to reach maiden semi-final

Nigeria beat the United States 4-3 on penalties to reach the semi-finals of the Under-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time following a 1-1 draw.

Omamuzo Edafe scored the deciding spot kick to end a tense shoot-out in Navi Mumbai.

Kick-off was delayed for almost two hours because of a thunderstorm, and Edafe gave the West Africans the lead from the spot in the 26th minute after Ella Emri committed a foul in the box.

Amalia Villarreal levelled for the Americans with a deflected shot shortly before the break.

USA, who finished runners-up at the maiden tournament in 2008, and Nigeria both failed to find a winner in the second half which took the game to penalties.

A dramatic shoot-out saw Emri shoot wide in the second round of penalties to hand Nigeria an early advantage.

Miracle Usani saw her effort saved in the following round, but was allowed a retake because USA keeper Valentina Amaral had strayed off her line and was able to net at the second attempt.

Comfort Folorunsho sent her effort over the bar in the fourth round of penalties to give the USA hope but Nigeria keeper Linda Jiwuaku, who had come on as an injury-time substitute, then saved from Riley Jackson.

That allowed Edafe to calmly slot home to send the Flamingos into their maiden semi-final.

Nigeria, who have taken part in all but the 2018 edition of the U17 World Cup finals, will face the winner of Saturday’s game between Colombia and African other representative Tanzania in the semi-finals on 26 October.
