  • I have not resigned from my post – Charles Adu-Boahen

The Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Charles Adu-Boahen, has refuted claims that he has tendered his resignation to the President.

In a short reply to such claims he said “No sir! Never. You can quote me. I have not tendered my resignation.”

His response comes amidst calls for his removal or resignation from office as a result of the economic downturn.

On Tuesday, October 25, 80 out of the 137 majority MPs had joined calls for the sacking of the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, and the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu-Boahen citing their poor management of the country’s fiscal space.

They had also blamed the duo for the delay in the ongoing International Monetary Fund programme negotiations that is expected to give the country a bailout.

The lawmakers added, “We are by this medium communicating our strong desire that the President changes the Minister of Finance and the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry without further delay to restore hope to the financial sector and reverse the downward trend in the growth of the economy.”

The group led by the MP for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi said the failure of government to heed to their demands will result in them boycotting all government business.

“Meanwhile we want to serve notice, and notice is hereby served that until such persons as aforementioned are made to resign or removed from office, we members of the majority caucus here in Parliament will not participate in any business of government by or for the President by any other minister.

“We hope that those of us [at] the backbench and members of the majority caucus will abide by this prayer. We are saying that if our request is not responded to positively, we will not be present for the budget hearing, neither will we participate in the debate”.

Their move was applauded by the general public and civil society who had also been calling for the resignation of the Finance Minister.

However, in a U-turn, the MPs later acceded to President Akufo-Addo’s appeal to let Ken Ofori-Atta and Charles Adu-Boahen stay in office till after the IMF deal is sorted out.

In a statement released by the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, he said, the Minister of Finance and the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry will stay “until the conclusion of the round of negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the presentation of the Budget Statement and Economic Policy in November, 2022 and the subsequent passage of the Appropriation Bill after which time the demand will be acted upon.”

  • We weren’t bribed to suspend ‘Ofori-Atta must go’ demand – Appiah-Kubi

New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Member of Parliament for Asante Akim Central Constituency, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has dismissed reports that he and other MPs were bribed to step down calls for Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta to be sacked by President Akufo-Addo.

Appiah-Kubi led a group of about 80 MPs earlier this week demanding the immediate removal of Ofori-Atta and Charles Adu Boahen, the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry.

The MPs cited the struggling economy as the basis for their call threatening to boycott government business in the House if their call is not heeded to.

After a meeting at the Presidency on Tuesday, it emerged that an agreement had been reached between the Majority Caucus and the President to have Ofori-Atta conclude the latest round of talks with the International Monetary Fund and to also present and see to the appropriation of the 2023 budget before ‘leaving.’

That deal has seen members of the public thrash the MPs for having allowed themselves to be induced financially to back down on their call.

This, Appiah Kubi stresses is incorrect.

In an interview with Accra-based Joy News, he said: “I want one person, anybody associated with any such person who thinks that he can give money … If I hear anybody making an allegation, I will come out with information.

“I will come out with information that we are beyond the bribes, our motivation is not the financial inducement, we don’t have money in our pockets but at least we have conscience. We will not reduce ourselves to that situation,” he added.

He revealed that they had previously been approached with financial inducement but that they had repelled all such maneuvers.

“Anybody who wants to attempt, be advised. We have sent this message to some people, they have sat upright. We have sound enough warning to people who want to influence members of our coalition with materialism, it won’t happen.”

In a separate interview, the MP said he expected Ofori-Atta to be removed as Minister latest by December 31, 2022; by which time the budget appropriation would have been completed all things being equal.

  • 3 reasons Mahama can’t call for Ofori-Atta’s dismissal – Ken Agyapong lists

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has criticised former President John Dramani Mahama over his call for the dismissal of Ken Ofori-Atta, Minister of Finance.

According to him, Mahama should lack the impetus to make such a call stressing that he was not being fair to the minister.

In an interview with Accra-based Citi TV, the MP in explaining his point indicated that Mahama has once been president and during his tenure, the country was plunged into darkness in what became known as ‘dumsor’.

He stated that under the tenure of the former President, the country initiated moves to seek a bailout from the International Monetary Fund in 2015.

He contended that John Mahama refused to sack his finance minister at the time, Seth Terkper.

“President Mahama is not being fair to the finance minister. If you request that, I will agree because you have not been in that vehicle before. President Mahama was in the vehicle when the was so-called ‘dumsor’.

“President Mahama was in the vehicle when he took us to IMF with his finance minister. Did he ever fire any finance minister? This is the question I ask. Ghanaians can ask for that and I agree with them hundred per cent. Elsewhere maybe the finance minister would have resigned himself. Well, it is up to him [to decide to honourably resign]. That I don’t have a problem with.

“But the very person who is asking for this has been the before and he did nothing. The depreciation of the Cedi is my problem. That is the only challenge we have now that we need to address. But in 2014…have we forgotten? We went through the same under president Mahama. What did he do? The only solution is to take us to IMF,” Ken Agyapong said.

Former President John Mahama while delivering a lecture titled ‘Building The Ghana We Want’, said it was untenable for Ken Ofori-Atta to remain at post with the claim that he should be allowed to conclude ongoing negotiations with IMF as well as read the budget statement scheduled for November.

He was reacting to the latest move of some NPP MPs who organized a press conference on October 25 to demand the sack of the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta together with Charles Adu Boahene, Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, failure which they will not pursue government business in Parliament.

Following this, the president has held meetings with the MPs where it is reported that he has appealed to them to allow Ken Ofori-Atta in particular complete the IMF negotiations.

The Majority Caucus in a statement confirmed that the demands of the MPs will be ‘acted upon’ after the conclusion of IMF negotiations and the presentation of the Budget Statement and Economic Policy in November 2022, and the subsequent passage of the Appropriation Bill.

But commenting on the matter, Mahama could not comprehend how Ofori-Atta’s absence will affect the IMF negotiations as well as budget preparation.

“I only got to know of a press statement by the Majority of a so-called compromise that the Minister will leave after he has completed the budget and the IMF negotiations…budget preparations and IMF negotiations are the results of teamwork, they are not the work of one individual. I fail to see how the absence of the Minister will affect the preparations of the budget and the negotiations with the IMF,” John Mahama explained.

  • Raducanu to miss Billie Jean King Cup with wrist injury

Emma Raducanu has pulled out of next month’s Billie Jean King Cup, citing a wrist injury.

The former US Open champion had been named as part of Great Britain’s team for the tournament, which will take place at Emirates Arena in Glasgow between November 8-13.

Raducanu was selected alongside Harriet Dart, Katie Boulter and Heather Watson, with a fifth member to be added at a later date, and made her Billie Jean King Cup debut in April’s qualifier against Czech Republic.

However, after pulling out of the Transylvania Open earlier this month with the same right-wrist issue, the 19-year-old confirmed on Friday she had been told by doctors she will not recover in time.

“It’s disappointing to get the news from the doctors that I won’t be ready in time, particularly with it being on home soil,” Raducanu said.

“I tried to do everything possible to get it ready in time.

“Since my last tournament I’ve been working every day on physical training and rehab. I’ve got confidence in my team-mates and look forward to playing next year.”

Great Britain will be one of 12 teams participating in Scotland, and have been drawn in a group with Kazakhstan and Spain.

  • Alonso appeal success for Alpine as US Grand Prix points are restored

Alpine have won their appeal against a penalty imposed on Fernando Alonso following the United States Grand Prix, meaning his points for a seventh-place finish have been restored.

A dramatic race for the Spaniard involved his car sustaining significant damage after a collision with Lance Stroll  saw the Alpine rear up and hit roadside barriers, forcing him to pit for repairs.

The Haas team launched a protest after Alonso lost his right-hand mirror late in the race, and a 30-second punishment saw him fall to 15th place in the race standings.

The post-race complaint from Haas came, according to Alpine, some 24 minutes after the deadline for making such claims.

Now Alpine have succeeded in getting the penalty overturned by governing body the FIA, with two-time champion Alonso recovering the six points he achieved in Austin.

Ahead of this weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix, Alpine said in a statement: “BWT Alpine F1 Team thanks the FIA stewards for convening and reaching a positive conclusion on the matter involving car #14 from last weekend’s United States Grand Prix.

“The team welcomes the decision made by the aforementioned stewards, whereby car #14 reinstates its seventh-place finish and six points from the race. We look forward to continuing our collaborative work alongside the FIA to ensure the racing spectacle is maintained to the highest quality. The team now looks forward to competing this weekend at the Mexico City Grand Prix.”

Alonso sits ninth in this year’s drivers’ standings, one place behind team-mate Esteban Ocon.

Before the FIA appeal result was known, Alonso said on Thursday: “It was a rollercoaster of emotions for me on Sunday: I started at the back, then we were like P6, we had the accident; last again; and then finishing P7, and then in the evening, again out of the points. So it was up and down all day long.”

  • Aston Martin accept €450,000 fine after breaching F1 cost cap rules

Aston Martin have been fined €450,000 (£388,830) after being found in breach of Formula One financial regulations for the 2021 season.

Motorsport’s world governing body the FIA announced earlier this month that an audit determined Aston Martin and Red Bull – who were hit with a €7million (£6.1m) fine on Friday – broke the rules during the 2021 reporting period.

Aston Martin’s financial documentation claimed their costs were under the budget cap, but the team was found to have misrepresented their outgoings.

In a statement, the FIA revealed Aston Martin “incorrectly excluded and/or adjusted costs” relating to the construction of their “new headquarters, new F1 simulator, wind tunnel fees, R&D tax credit, a signing bonus cost, use of transferable components, used inventories, service desk costs, cost of catering services at their headquarters, costs of desks and chairs, sponsor services and outsourced personnel services”.

Aston Martin subsequently entered into an Accepted Breach Agreement (ABA) with the FIA, meaning they must pay a fine within 30 days and reimburse costs incurred by the administrators who conducted the financial review.

Announcing the ABA, the FIA said: “The Cost Cap Administration recognised that AMR [Aston Martin] has acted cooperatively and in good faith throughout the review process and has sought to provide additional information and evidence when requested in a timely manner, that this is the first year of the full application of the Financial Regulations and that there is no accusation or evidence that AMR has sought or obtained any undue advantage as a result of the breach.”

With Aston Martin entering an ABA, there is no possibility for the team to appeal their fine and the matter is now closed.

  • Red Bull fined for breaching F1 budget cap regulations

Red Bull have been fined $7million and have been hit with a 10 per cent reduction in permitted aerodynamic research for breaking Formula 1 budget cap regulations.

Motorsport’s world governing body the FIA revealed that Red Bull were guilty of spending £1.86m more than they were permitted to last season, which ended dramatically when Max Verstappen won his first world title.

The FIA on Friday confirmed the sanctions imposed on the constructors’ champions after the Red Bull Racing accepted breaking the rules.

It was taken into account by the FIA that Red Bull Racing had “acted cooperatively throughout” what was the first review process under F1 financial regulations.

Along with being slapped with a significant fine, Red Bull have also had the amount of time they can spend using their wind tunnel or computational fluid dynamics cut by 10 per cent for a one-year period.

An FIA statement said: “Following the submission of all required documentation by all 10 Formula 1 teams, the Cost Cap Administration carried out the first ever review process under the FIA Formula One World Championship Financial Regulations.

“These new Financial Regulations are a very complex set of rules that competitors were required to adapt to for the first time.

“Red Bull Racing was found to be in breach, however, the Cost Cap Administration recognised that Red Bull Racing has acted cooperatively throughout the review process and has sought to provide additional information and evidence when requested in a timely manner, that this is the first year of the full application of the Financial Regulations and that there is no accusation or evidence that RBR has sought at any time to act in bad faith, dishonestly or in fraudulent manner, nor has it wilfully concealed any information from the Cost Cap Administration.

“In these circumstances, the Cost Cap Administration offered to RBR an ABA to resolve this matter. That offer was accepted by RBR.

“An Accepted Breach Agreement (“ABA”) dated 26 October 2022 was therefore entered into by and between the Cost Cap Administration and Red Bull Racing pursuant to Article 6.28 of the FIA Formula 1 Financial Regulations (“Financial Regulations”).”

McLaren chief executive Zak Brown last week stated that breaches of the budget cap amounted to “cheating”, a claim which Red Bull principal Christian Horner labelled “fictitious”.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, who was denied a record-breaking eighth world title when Verstappen claimed a dramatic and controversial win at the season-ending race in Abu Dhabi, warned a “slap on the wrist” for Red Bull would simply encourage further breaches.

Verstappen has retained his title this season, while Red Bull have also secured the constructors’ crown.

  • Spanish prosecutors drop fraud and corruption charges against Neymar

Prosecutors in Spain have dropped corruption and fraud charges against Neymar.

The Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil star was one of several people accused of the charges in a trial relating to his move from Santos to Barcelona in 2013.

Other defendants in the case included Neymar’s parents, the two clubs involved in the deal, former Barcelona presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, along with ex-Santos president Odilio Rodrigues.

The prosecution had been seeking jail time of two years for Neymar, in addition to a fine of €10million, but withdrew all charges on Friday.

Investment firm DIS, which owned 40 per cent of the Brazilian’s rights when he was still at Santos, alleged it had missed out on money from the deal as the value had been understated.

Barcelona agreed a deal with Neymar in 2011 to sign him two years later for an overall fee of €57.1m, with €40m of that going to the player and his family, meaning DIS only received a percentage of the remaining €17.1m that went to Santos as the selling club.

DIS argued the deal was undervalued, with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez appearing as a witness in court via videolink and revealing Madrid had made offers of €45m in 2011 and €36m in 2013 to sign Neymar, but he chose to join Barca.

The alleged offence which Neymar and his family was accused of is not punishable in Brazil.

Neymar had always denied the allegations, stating last week he had not been a part of negotiations regarding his transfer to the LaLiga giants.

  • Mari says he and his family are ‘fine’ as Arsenal loanee recovers from stabbing

Pablo Mari says he and his family are “fine” and the on-loan Monza defender expressed his gratitude for the support he has received after being stabbed on Thursday.

The Spaniard, who joined Monza from Arsenal on a season-long deal in August, is expected to be out of action for at least two months after undergoing back surgery following the horrific attack in a supermarket near Milan.

One person died and a suspect was arrested after being disarmed, with former Napoli footballer Massimo Tarantino named as being among those who stopped the assault.

Mari stated on Friday that he felt lucky to be alive before posting a picture of himself and his wife giving the thumbs up in hospital on Instagram.

The 29-year-old wrote: “After the hard moment we experienced yesterday, both my family and I want to communicate that fortunately we are all fine despite the circumstances.

“We want to thank all the messages of support and affection that we are receiving.

“In addition, we want to send our condolences and all our strength to the family and friends of the deceased person, and we sincerely wish that all injured people recover as soon as possible.”

  • Salah and Liverpool aim to pile more misery on Leeds boss Marsch

Liverpool fans will say their team is like a box of chocolates at the moment in that you never know what you’re going to get, and also they can be hazardous to your health.

A wobbly start to the campaign looked to have got back on track after wins against Manchester City and West Ham, only for an insipid defeat at Nottingham Forest last week to send Jurgen Klopp’s men back into crisis.

A 3-0 win at Ajax on Wednesday to secure their place in the last 16 of the Champions League should boost confidence again, but it is still anyone’s guess as to which version of the Reds will turn up when they host Leeds United on Saturday.

Jesse Marsch heads to Anfield under serious pressure himself, with Leeds having not won in eight Premier League games (D2, L6) since beating Chelsea 3-0 at Elland Road in August.

Stats Perform has taken a look behind the numbers heading into this clash to try and get to the bottom of what can be expected.

Home comforts can calm Reds nerves

They may have not had the best start to the campaign domestically, having not won any of their five Premier League away games (D2 L3), but Liverpool remain a force to be reckoned with at Anfield.

Klopp’s side are unbeaten 29 league home games (W22 D7), scoring 73 goals and conceding just 16 in that run.

It has not all been plain sailing, having fallen behind in five of their previous six at Anfield prior to back-to-back 1-0 wins against City and West Ham, but more often than not they get the job done.

Virgil van Dijk is still yet to suffer a Premier League defeat in his home stadium since his move from Southampton in January 2018 (70 games – W59 D11).

    You’ve lost that winning feeling

When Leeds were celebrating a well-earned victory against Chelsea on August 21, few would have thought they would not have experienced another by late October.

As mentioned, the Whites are winless in their last eight league games, which is the longest current run of any team in the Premier League.

Leeds have also lost each of their past four away games, last losing five in a row on the road in the top flight between January and March 2003 – the fifth game of which was at Liverpool, where they were beaten 3-1.

They will also be missing several players through injury, with Rodrigo Moreno’s likely absence a blow as the Spaniard has scored five goals in 10 Premier League games this season, just one fewer than he netted in 31 appearances last season, and just two less than he managed in his best scoring season in the competition in 2020-21 (seven in 26 games).

    Mo Salah, fewer problems

Mohamed Salah has been the subject of much debate this season, seemingly not hitting his usual heights.

Last season’s joint-top scorer in the Premier League seemingly enjoys facing Leeds, though, having been involved in six goals in two home appearances against them (five goals, one assist).

Salah has 10 goals in 17 games in all competitions, and is coming off another fine finish to open the scoring in Liverpool’s victory in Amsterdam on Wednesday.

The Egypt forward has also created more chances from open play than any other player in the Premier League this season (28). He is creating 2.6 chances per 90 minutes on average this season, his best rate in a single campaign in the competition.

    No more bottom feeding

While they have dropped some sloppy points this season, Liverpool could at least take some comfort in the fact their only Premier League defeats had been against fellow big fish Manchester United and Arsenal.

That was until last week when they handed three points to bottom club Forest, and they will be looking to avoid a similar story this time around.

Liverpool have not lost consecutive Premier League games against sides in the relegation zone since March 2012, when a defeat at QPR was followed by a home loss to Wigan Athletic.

They have already lost more league games this season (three) than they did in the whole of 2021-22 (two), while their 16 points from 11 games is their worst return at this stage of a campaign since 2014-15 (14).

Leeds might smell blood, or arguably more likely, face the wrath of a wounded beast.

  • ‘Until you brief Parliament forget about laying your C.I before the House’ – Speaker tells EC

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has threatened to block the laying of a new Constitutional Instrument (C.I) by the Electoral Commission if the House is not briefed accordingly.

The Electoral Commission’s CI, which is undergoing some amendments, is expected to make the Ghana card the only identification document to enroll unto the voters register.

This new proposal has been a thorny issue between the EC and the opposition NDC together with other political parties.

They have argued that this proposal by the EC seeks to disenfranchise Ghanaians in the upcoming elections.

Speaking on the matter on the Floor of the House, on Friday, Alban Bagbin noted that the independence of the EC does not make it immune to oversight by Parliament.

He indicated that he will only allow the EC to lay the C.I before Parliament if members of the House are fully briefed.

“I am yet to receive them to be briefed. Until that is done, they should forget about laying any such instrument in the House. I think there is a misinterpretation and misunderstanding of the concept of independence of various state institutions that are stated by the Constitution to be independent,” he stated.

Mr. Alban Bagbin explained that the EC’s independence relates to the performance of its functions. However, its independence ceases if any issue or matter is brought before Parliament.

“They cannot say they are not subject to the control of anybody, including the institution of Parliament. The EC, the Bank of Ghana and the Judiciary should take note,” he added.

  • LaLiga Matchday 12: Barca face Mestalla meeting with Valencia

Barcelona’s Champions League campaign ended in failure — but they continue to impress in LaLiga.

The Blaugrana exited Europe’s elite competition in midweek, after Inter Milan swatted Viktoria Plzen aside to secure knockout qualification.

However, they will be chasing a third consecutive league win at Valencia this weekend, following their 4-0 demolition of Athletic Bilbao on Matchday 11.

Elsewhere, leaders Real Madrid host Girona on Sunday, top-four hopefuls Real Sociedad and Real Betis go head-to-head and Atletico Madrid will hope to bounce back from their continental elimination by beating Cadiz.

Game of the week: Valencia vs Barcelona (Saturday, 8pm)

A trip to Valencia could be the perfect tonic for Barcelona’s European woes.

The Catalan giants have only lost one of their previous 15 league visits to the Mestalla (won seven, drawn seven) and have picked up maximum points from their last three meetings with Los Che.

Xavi’s men will certainly be confident about not conceding — they have kept nine clean sheets in their 11 LaLiga games this season, which is more than any other team in the competition’s history at this stage of the campaign.

And Barca have also been in sublime form at the other end of the pitch, with Robert Lewandowski netting a remarkable 12 goals in 11 league fixtures.

Real Madrid vs Girona (Sunday, 3.15pm)

Real Madrid will be flying the flag for Spain in 2023 — they are the only LaLiga team to have reached the Champions League knockout rounds.

Los Blancos are also leading the way domestically too, though Carlo Ancelotti’s side will need to watch out for a potential banana skin this weekend.

The table-toppers have lost two of their four league meetings with Girona, which is their highest losing percentage in the competition (50%).

However, the visitors are yet to record a win on the road in 2022-23 and the capital has not been a happy hunting ground for them in recent times — they have lost all of their last three visits to Madrid.

Federico Valverde has been remarkably lethal from distance this season
Federico Valverde has been remarkably lethal from distance this season

Real Sociedad vs Real Betis (Sunday, 8pm)

Both these sides suffered defeat on Matchday 11 — but Real Sociedad will fancy their chances against inconsistent Real Betis.

Los Verdiblancos have won just one of their last five LaLiga fixtures (drawn two, lost two), while the hosts’ loss at Real Valladolid last Saturday snapped a run of eight consecutive victories in all competitions.

Betis are unbeaten in their last five encounters with Imanol Alguacil’s men though, not conceding in any of their last three meetings.

But they will need to watch out for Sociedad’s creator-in-chief Mikel Merino. He has conjured four assists in the competition this term, with only Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele (five) managing more.

Cadiz vs Atletico Madrid (Saturday, 3.15pm)

Antoine Griezmann struck twice against Real Betis on Matchday 11
Antoine Griezmann struck twice against Real Betis on Matchday 11

Atletico Madrid will be desperate to get back to winning ways on Saturday, after their continental hopes were crushed in dramatic fashion.

Yannick Carrasco missed a stoppage-time penalty in midweek, as a 2-2 draw with Bayer Leverkusen sent Atleti tumbling out of the Champions League.

However, they should have a good chance of bouncing back against Cadiz, who have failed to win any of their last seven home league games against the Colchoneros (drawn three, lost four).

And Diego Simeone’s unit have been imperious on the road in LaLiga, collecting a sensational 16 points from the 18 available in 2022-23 (won five, drawn one).

Athletic Bilbao vs Villarreal (Sunday, 5.30pm)

The last meeting between Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal was a close-fought contest that ended in a 1-1 draw
The last meeting between Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal was a close-fought contest that ended in a 1-1 draw

It has been a tumultuous week for Villarreal, with manager Unai Emery leaving the Yellow Submarine to join Premier League outfit Aston Villa.

He has been replaced in the dugout by former Barcelona boss Quique Setien, who will be hoping to compound Athletic Bilbao’s poor run of form.

The Basque club are without a win in four games but have a solid record against Sunday’s visitors.

Los Leones have avoided defeat in their most recent seven meetings with Villarreal (won two, drawn five), while the Castellon club have struggled on the road this season — failing to win or score during their last five away LaLiga matches (drawn two, lost three).

    The weekend’s other games

    Mallorca vs Espanyol (Friday, 8pm)

Almeria vs Celta Vigo (Saturday, 1pm)

Sevilla vs Rayo Vallecano (Saturday, 5.30pm)

Osasuna vs Real Valladolid (Sunday, 1pm)

  • Man City to assess Haaland fitness ahead of Leicester clash

Manchester City will assess Erling Haaland ahead of their Premier League clash with Leicester after his half-time withdrawal against Borussia Dortmund in midweek.

Haaland’s return to the Signal Iduna Park was ended prematurely on Wednesday due to a fever and a knock.

City travel to face the Foxes in Saturday’s early kick-off for a game that gives them the chance to put pressure on Arsenal, who host Nottingham Forest on Sunday, by leapfrogging them at the top of the table.

But it is still unclear whether they will have Haaland at their disposal.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the visit to the King Power Stadium, Pep Guardiola said of his star striker: “He feels better but we will train this afternoon [Friday] and we will assess in a few hours.

“We will see how he is feeling and then we will decide.”

Haaland has made a blistering start to life in the Premier League following his move from Dortmund.

He has scored 17 goals in 11 Premier League appearances this season, already the joint-second most by a Norwegian player in a single campaign (Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, 18 in 1996-97). His goals have been worth 11 points, the most for a City player in a single campaign since Raheem Sterling in 2017-18 (also 11).

Should he be unable to feature against Leicester, Julian Alvarez would likely take his place at the heart of the attack.

The 22-year-old has scored twice in nine league games for City, of which he has started just one.

Despite his limited time in the XI, Guardiola has complete faith in Alvarez’s ability to fill the void.

“If Haaland doesn’t play, then Alvarez is the natural first option to replace him. I don’t judge Julian on how many goals he has scored,” added Guardiola.

“Play 90 minutes every game and he will score goals, maybe not like Erling, but he will score goals.”

  • Simeone not bothered about criticism from fans

Diego Simeone does not care what Atletico Madrid’s fans think of him following their Champions League exit, insisting he is only focused on the future.

The Rojiblancos crashed out of Europe’s premier club competition with 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday, in which Yannick Carrasco missed a late penalty.

Third-placed Atleti also trail LaLiga leaders Real Madrid by eight points ahead of a trip to Cadiz on Saturday.

While Simeone acknowledges he needs a response from his side this weekend, the Atleti head coach does not concern himself with the opinions of supporters over his future.

“I feel that we have to play a great game tomorrow, that we have to continue working and giving everything since we arrived,” he stated.

“I don’t think about anything other than what lies ahead. ‘I don’t care what they think of me,’ said a great Spanish writer, I think the same. This does not end today.”

Simeone says his players must not dwell on their Champions League failure.

“Everything goes ahead,” he added. “I still think that the team is doing well, finding what identifies us in the game and being strong.”

The Argentine would not be drawn on video footage of Joao Felix that appeared to show the Portugal international partying in the aftermath of the Leverkusen game.

“I have nothing to say about his private life,” he added. “If I have something to say I would say it to him. I’m not talking about anyone. They are internal things.”

  • Allegri demands Juventus unleash their Champions League anger on Serie A rivals

Massimiliano Allegri wants Juventus to channel their Champions League “anger” and show the rest of Serie A they remain a force to be reckoned with.

Under-pressure head coach Allegri said Juventus would “play an unspectacular game if necessary” on Saturday to get the better of Lecce.

After recent wins over Torino and Empoli, Juventus are looking for a third Serie A victory on the bounce, but results in Europe have been dreadful by comparison, with defeats to Maccabi Haifa and Benfica dumping the Bianconeri out at the Champions League group stage.

Italian media have not been slow to link Tottenham boss Antonio Conte with a return to Juventus, possibly at the end of the season when the former Italy coach’s contract expires at Spurs, though the Premier League club do have an option to extend that agreement.

But Allegri wants to prove his Juventus are not a busted flush, and a long streak of league wins would be timely, possibly for the 55-year-old’s job security.

The last time the Bianconeri won three league games in a row without conceding was back in February 2021, but winning 1-0 at Torino and 4-0 at home to Empoli last weekend has set up that possibility.

Now Lecce stand in Juve’s way, and Allegri said: “We have to react after the elimination from the Champions League and carry the anger with us throughout the Serie A season.

“We will have to play an unspectacular game if necessary. Up to now Lecce has always kept the games in the balance, we know the importance of tomorrow’s match, we will have to take it on as a team, with great consistency.”

He will be without striker Dusan Vlahovic due to injury, while midfielder Manuel Locatelli misses out for personal reasons, with Allegri taking a 19-player group.

Federico Chiesa and Paul Pogba are not ready to return from their injury lay-offs, while Allegri was unsure whether he would field young midfielders Nicolo Fagioli and Fabio Miretti.

Juventus have 19 points from 11 games, losing twice, and they trail leaders Napoli by 10 points.

Their next Serie A assignment, after this weekend, is a clash with improving Inter.

The Lecce game is far from a formality, but Juventus have lost only four of 32 previous Serie A encounters with the team from the Salento peninsula.

“Right now we have to do something more to get out of this situation,” Allegri said, quoted on his club’s official website.

“It’s an opportunity for everyone, it’s a time for growth, I have a group of guys who have important moral values. Talking about the Scudetto today is useless, now we have to react starting from Lecce.”

  • Phillips and Walker ‘optimistic’ over World Cup hopes

Kalvin Phillips and Kyle Walker are “optimistic” they can feature for England at the World Cup but are unlikely to play for Manchester City beforehand.

Phillips has played just one Premier League game for City since joining from Leeds United owing to a shoulder injury.

Walker, meanwhile, has not played since the October 2 win over Manchester United because of a groin issue on which he underwent surgery, giving England a problem at the right-back position, which has come under great scrutiny in the lead-up to the tournament.

England play their first game in Qatar against Iran on November 21.

Asked about Phillips and Walker, City manager Pep Guardiola said at a press conference ahead of their game with Leicester City: “They are not ready for Leicester.

“I think they are getting better, Kalvin especially, but they are out. Until after World Cup, they will not be ready [to play for City].”

On Phillips, he added: “He feels really well, his mobility in his shoulder is perfect. He has to avoid contact with his team-mates at the moment.

“We are surprised how quick his development [has been]. If he’s fit and I believe he can play and he’s ready, maybe he can take minutes but I don’t know right now.

England manager Gareth Southgate’s final 26-man squad for the World Cup will be announced on November 10.

“They are positive, optimistic,” said Guardiola. “They are in touch with Gareth. I don’t know, hopefully they can be ready to be selected.”

  • Conte ‘enjoying every single moment’ as he nears Spurs anniversary

Antonio Conte says he is “enjoying every single moment” at Tottenham as he nears a year in charge of the Premier League club.

Conte, appointed in November 2021, has not always portrayed his time in London in quite such a positive light, outlining the need for improvement and investment in order to seriously challenge.

Meanwhile, his Spurs contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

But ahead of Saturday’s match with Bournemouth – Tottenham’s final league game before November 2, the date on which Conte was appointed last year – the Italian spoke in glowing terms of his “adventure”.

“I always say that I am enjoying my time in Tottenham,” he said. “In one year, we had a great path together, with the club, the players, the fans and you [media].

“I think I am enjoying every single moment in my adventure in Tottenham. For sure, I discover a modern club, a club with a fantastic training ground and an amazing stadium.

“[I discovered] the passion of the fans, at the same time the demands of our fans – the demand is very high. I continue to enjoy every day.”

Conte has guided Tottenham to third, although he and the club approach his anniversary on a tough run.

Spurs lost consecutive Premier League matches to top-six rivals Manchester United and Newcastle United, before they were held by Sporting CP in the Champions League as a late Harry Kane winner was struck off.

Conte fumed after that decision, which followed a lengthy VAR delay deep into stoppage time, and he had no interest in reframing his thoughts on Friday.

“I said what I said,” he told reporters, adding: “I didn’t change my mind.”

Tottenham had already been frustrated by the officiating in the Newcastle defeat, as Hugo Lloris complained he was fouled in an incident involving Callum Wilson that led to the opening goal.

Spurs appealed at length to the referee, only for the goal to be awarded regardless, and the Football Association confirmed on Friday the club had accepted a £20,000 fine for “failing to ensure that its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion”.

  • Klopp impressed by Nunez reaction to Palace red

Jurgen Klopp has “no idea” how good Darwin Nunez could become but believes the Liverpool forward’s output so far has been “incredible” considering the “knock” of his early suspension.

Nunez was Liverpool’s big-money pre-season signing, arriving from Benfica for a fee that could reportedly reach £85million (€100m).

The 23-year-old enjoyed a flying start to life in England, scoring from the bench against both Manchester City and Fulham, but his first appearance in the starting XI was cut short by a red card against Crystal Palace that prompted a three-match ban.

As a result, Nunez has still only played 636 minutes for Liverpool in late October, although he has been in the thick of the action when he has been on the pitch.

The Uruguay forward has six goals and an assist, and he might have added more; he is averaging 6.4 shots per 90 in open play, almost double second-placed Liverpool star Mohamed Salah’s 3.3.

Including chances created and contributions to build-up play, Nunez has been involved in 8.1 attacking sequences per 90 in open play – another leading mark among Liverpool players.

He has marginally underperformed his 6.4 expected goals, even if his expected goals on target value – calculated from the quality of the attempt rather than the quality of the chance – of 6.6 suggests his finishing has not largely been at fault.

Those numbers might easily be ignored in the face of some of the more eye-catching misses, as Nunez has converted only four of his 14 ‘big chances’, from which Opta would expect a player to score.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s game against Leeds United, Klopp listed a range of factors that would suggest a tough first season for Nunez, meaning he is willing to forgive those occasional failings in front of goal.

“Darwin came here after a short break in the summer, arriving in Asia, doesn’t speak a word [of English], and he’s young, and Liverpool’s a big club, and it’s a big step for him, and he was expensive,” Klopp said. “All these kinds of things.

“It’s like everybody’s looking at you – the whole place is dark and there’s one light that’s a spot on you. You have to deal with that, but we don’t expect them to deal immediately. If you cause it, then you have to be prepared, but he did not.”

After the red card, Klopp said: “He feels embarrassed for himself, definitely – that’s how everybody would react.

“From not being 100 per cent confident, getting a knock like this is not cool. He can blame nobody else. Then he has to start new.”

However, his manager added: “For all these things, his numbers are incredible, to be absolutely honest.

“You talk about the xG of Leeds, I’m pretty sure his xG is high as well. He had a few chances, which he missed, but he scored as well. He’s involved in a lot of finishing moments.

“The steps he’s made are really big, and that means automatically that he settles in more and more.”

With Nunez so impactful even while passing up such opportunities, his potential with a little more work is “so exciting”.

“Nobody knows [how good he can be]; he doesn’t know,” Klopp said. “That is so exciting.

“He has to stay fit and be available all the time, and he wasn’t against Nottingham [Forest]. That’s all important in the life of a professional football player.

“We have to work on all different areas. The potential is incredible. It’s not only speed; the attitude is really good, he’s a real worker.

“There are people out there who, technically, not sure, first touch… it’s incredible. He does not bring it on the pitch in the moment all the time. His first touch might be here or there sometimes, but it’s nothing to do with technique. It’s just a bit too late, awareness, orientation, all these kinds of things.

“It’s all possible to develop and learn, and that’s where we are at. It’s really exciting. But where it could go? I have no idea.”

  • Make threshold for consensus sex 18 years just like election age – Nana Adwoa Awindor

The CEO of Obaapa Development Foundation, Nana Adwoa Awindor has appealed to lawmakers to amend laws over the age that qualifies a girl for consensus sex from 16 to 18 years.

According to her, she was worried over that particular instance where the Ghanaian law classifies 18 years and above as matured minds for election and rather classifies 16 years as matured minds for sex.

To her, something must be done to equalize the qualifications since she still sees 16, 17 years old girls as under-ages for sex.

“If 18 years is qualified as mature minds for election, why don’t we do same for girls when it comes to sex? Or what makes their maturity different when it comes to sex? Their minds at those ages still look immature as that of the qualification ages for election,” she said.

Nana Adwoa Awindor who was speaking in an interview with the media during an International Day For the Girl Child Celebration at Ayeduase expressed worry over the rate at which most underage girls, especially within the Ashanti region get pregnant.

The program which had been themed; Our time is now, our rights, our future, the role of traditional leaders in youth development for nation building”, saw many stakeholders such as queen mothers, kings, parents, young girls, etc gracing the occasion.

The program which was powered by the Obaapa Development Foundation in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) sought to end frequent teenage pregnancy and early child marriages.

Expressing joy over the attendance, Nana Adwoa Awindor revealed some keys areas they highlighted during the program.

According to her the program centered on how to make young girls assertive, encourage them to make friends with their parents, educate them on menstrual hygiene etc.

Adding her voice, the host queen mother, Nana Yaa Saah of the Ayeduase traditional area commended the organisers for bringing the program to her community at this right time.

According to her, she needed the program the most due to the fact that most of the young girls within her area had fallen victim to the hands of the University Students from KNUST where she sadly revealed that the male students mostly impregnate the underage girls without taking responsibility.

She, therefore, called for more such programs to sensitise innocent girls from the hands of their prey setters.

Some Primary, JHS, and SHS female students who attended the program commended organisers for such a wonderful sensitisation.

Revealing the experience, the students disclosed that the lessons they had acquired from the program were going to make them bold to oppose negative advances from men. They also revealed that the program had taught them the need to make friends with their parents to avoid any danger.

  • Russia ends civilian pull-out before Kherson battle

Russian officials say they have completed an operation to move civilians out of the southern city of Kherson ahead of an expected battle with Ukrainian forces.

At least 70,000 civilians are said to have crossed the Dnipro river, in what Ukraine has called forced deportations.

“We’re preparing Kherson for defence,” said Russian militia commander Alexander Khodakovsky.

“We’re taking the civilian population out, in many ways untying our hands.”

Ukraine’s southern Kherson region was one of four areas of Ukraine annexed by Vladimir Putin last month, despite Russia not having total control of any of them.

Kherson city was captured shortly after Russia’s invasion last February but in recent weeks Ukrainian forces have steadily recaptured territory on the west or right bank of the Dnipro. The front line is 30km (18 miles) away from the city, according to Ukrainian officials.

Russian-installed officials have warned of an assault on the regional capital in the near future. However, Ukraine’s defence minister, Oleksii Reznikov, has described the counter-offensive as really difficult because of the tough terrain and rainy weather which make it harder to use fighting vehicles with wheels.

The man installed by Russia’s occupying authorities in annexed Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, posted pictures of the bank of the Dnipro on Thursday night, during a visit with a leading figure in the Kremlin, Sergei Kiriyenko.

“The work on organising the departure of residents has been completed,” he announced. Occupying authorities say they have been moved to “safe regions of Russia”, which include other areas of Ukraine under Russian control but also, reportedly, Russia itself.

The deportation or transfer of civilians by an occupying power inside or outside the occupied territory is considered a war crime.

Another Russian-appointed official admitted that many civilians had stayed. Vladimir Saldo, installed by the Russians as governor of Kherson, said 150-170,000 people were still in and around the city on the right bank of the Dnipro river. The pre-war population of the city alone was some 300,000.

One resident told the BBC last week that no-one was going anywhere and that Russian soldiers were worried how they could survive in Kherson city.

One of the most hardline backers of the war, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, admitted that a Chechen unit had suffered “big losses” in the region this week. He said 23 fighters were killed and 58 others were wounded in a Ukrainian artillery attack, but went on to claim that his forces had killed many more Ukrainians.

Ukraine’s regional leader in Kherson, Serhiy Khlan, said Kadyrov’s men were being replaced by soldiers recently called up as part of President Putin’s mobilisation drive across Russia. Fields around the regional capital were being mined, he said, and the new recruits were now acting as Russia’s first line of defence.

Ahead of any battle for Kherson city, Ukrainian officials have suggested that Russia has withdrawn its occupying authority to the town of Henichesk, some 200km to the south-east.

Ukrainian military spokeswoman Natalya Humenyuk said the Russians were trying to hold on to the right bank of the Dnipro, but the fact they were preparing to defend the other side of the river too was a “telling sign they understand. the real situation – that they are unlikely to hold on to the right bank”.

  • Klopp calls on Liverpool to ‘create basis’ for season before World Cup break

Jurgen Klopp emphasised the importance of the three Premier League matches Liverpool will play before the World Cup break as they look to recover ground on their rivals.

Liverpool took the title fight all the way to the final day of the 2021-22 season, narrowly losing out to Manchester City, but they enter this weekend down in eighth, 12 points behind leaders Arsenal.

Ahead of the season pausing next month, the Reds will face Leeds United on Saturday, before visiting Tottenham after a Champions League clash with Napoli and hosting Southampton following an EFL Cup tie against Derby County.

Klopp’s side at least head into the Leeds game on a high, having secured their progress in Europe with a 3-0 win at Ajax.

Since losing 4-1 at Napoli, Liverpool have been flawless in the Champions League, although they have only won one of the three domestic matches that have followed directly after European successes.

Asked about the prospect of taking confidence from the win in Amsterdam, Klopp replied: “I think we’ve had this conversation or a similar conversation after all the games we won or won convincingly – Bournemouth, Rangers, Ajax.”

But he added: “We have to. It’s a better feeling. Of course, I sit here with a different feeling than if we’d lost to Ajax and we had to play Leeds and then we have a final against Napoli.

“I would feel different, I can tell you. At the moment, it’s not too important.

“We have to see who we can use again. The situation is it’s a tough five games until the World Cup break; for us, they’re all super important.

“Then there’s a long break and we’ll see how we come back and how others come back.

“We have to create the basis for the time after, and we have three games in the league, which are all difficult. I can’t find an easy one. After the World Cup break, we are the first to face Unai Emery with Aston Villa, and we have no idea what they will do then. Great.

“That’s our situation. Yes, the moment is okay, we are ready to fight again, I hope the people are ready to fight again.

“It’s 19:45, Saturday night, a great time to play a football game. Everybody is in the right shape, and let’s go for it.”

For opponents Leeds, Klopp has seen “a massive difference between the results they got and the performance they put in”.

It was suggested Leeds’ struggles might be evidence of a highly competitive Premier League, and Klopp answered: “City is not running away, which makes it already more competitive.

“There is not only two teams or one team up front; there are three, four, five teams up front. My problem with that is only that we are not one of them.”

Five points behind Newcastle United in fourth, let alone the title contenders, Klopp is looking to swiftly get Liverpool back on track.

He should at least be boosted by the presence of Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson in midfield. Thiago is back, while Henderson should “be okay” after he was substituted at Ajax.

  • Xavi to ‘turn the page’ on Champions League and still foresees ‘great season’

Xavi has called on Barcelona to “turn the page” after their Champions League disappointment as he still believes they can deliver a “great season”.

The Blaugrana were eliminated from Europe’s elite club competition in midweek, with Inter’s victory over Viktoria Plzen sealing their fate even before a 3-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich.

Barca paid the price for taking only a point from their double-header against Inter, who followed Bayern into the last 16.

The Catalan giants had invested heavily in the transfer market – despite their financial difficulties – to try to ensure there would be no repeat of last season’s group-stage exit, but Xavi’s side still fell short.

However, sitting second in LaLiga and only three points behind leaders, champions and rivals Real Madrid, the Barca coach is ready to retrain his focus on a successful domestic campaign.

“In the Champions League, we have made our assessments, [about] what we have lacked but also that we had it in our hands,” Xavi said before Saturday’s game against Valencia.

“Now it’s time to turn the page. Tomorrow is one of those moments in the season to react.”

He added: “I’m still positive. It’s been a blow, but we can have a great season. There are many titles left.

“In LaLiga, we are in a good dynamic against strong rivals. It is another test to show a reaction and pride.”

With Barca already certain to fall into the Europa League before the Bayern match, Xavi suggested “the psychological part weighed a lot”.

Failure in Europe will surely increase pressure on the coach’s position, but he confirmed he had spoken to president Joan Laporta to analyse what had gone wrong.

“With the president, we talk continuously, practically for every game,” Xavi said. “We see each other after the games. The diagnosis is clear: there are things that have not depended on us, and we must improve those things that do depend on us.”

He added: “I think in Munich we saw a good Barca, this one also against Villarreal, Athletic, Real Sociedad, Sevilla; I think you are seeing things.

“I want to believe that we are on the way. I’ve experienced it as a footballer: we can’t get off track. And if we don’t arrive [at the best level], another coach will come.”

  • Galtier: PSG won’t ‘break’ Mbappe, Neymar and Messi front three

Christophe Galtier says Paris Saint-Germain will not “break” their front three of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi if they do not have to.

The trio have helped fire the Ligue 1 champions to a superb start to the season despite continued noise around Mbappe’s future.

Former Barcelona duo Neymar and Messi have both returned to top form, with 22 and 23 goal involvements respectively.

Ahead of this weekend’s encounter with Troyes, Galtier acknowledged a hectic schedule could force a reshuffle in attack, but he hopes all three superstars will be fit to feature again.

“It’s their state of fatigue that will judge whether they play,” the coach said. “They have scored 40 goals out of 50 for us this season, so it won’t be based on their state of form.

“When we have this dynamic, we don’t break it, we maintain it. The medical staff have done an excellent job in recent weeks. They are fine. When there is this dynamic, it is maintained.”

A midweek Champions League rout against Maccabi Haifa, where the Mbappe, Neymar and Messi netted a combined five goals in a 7-2 win, ensured PSG head into next week’s final Group H fixture guaranteed of progression to the knockout stages.

But whether they are seeded or not depends on their result with Juventus, with Galtier recognising the need to strike a balance between domestic and European commitments.

“We have an obligation to win against Troyes,” he added. “There will also be a lot at stake in the middle of the week in Turin. Over the duration of the match, there is the possibility of involving other players.”

  • Pickford hails ‘brilliant’ England boss Southgate as Qatar edges closer

Jordan Pickford has leapt to the defence of “brilliant” England boss Gareth Southgate and insists the Three Lions will head to the World Cup full of confidence.

The Qatar showpiece kicks off on November 20, with England currently enduring a six-game winless run.

They kick off their campaign against Iran on November 21 before further group clashes with USA and Wales.

Southgate’s men reached the semi-final at the 2018 World Cup before going one further at Euro 2020, but their troubled recent form has cast doubt over their potential to be contenders in the Middle East.

But speaking to the PA news agency, Pickford, 28, said: “Gareth is a brilliant manager.

“We will go to the World Cup positive. We will give it our best shot and hopefully bring the cup home.

“I think for us it is about making the nation proud and doing our best in the tournament.

“We know what we are capable of doing and we have great squad togetherness.

“Togetherness gets you so far, so I think if we haven’t won in six, it is not the end of the world and we will still be going to Qatar as positive as anything after the last two tournaments.”

    Raring to go

Everton goalkeeper Pickford has starred for England during their last two tournaments but has missed his country’s last four games due to rotation and an injury.

But with the stopper now fighting fit ahead of Qatar, he expressed his eagerness to pull on a Three Lions jersey again.

He added: “I can’t wait. I was injured for the last camp, which was unfortunate, but I have got myself fit and I am raring to go.

“I am playing for Everton again now so in a good run of form leading up to the World Cup and looking forward to the World Cup itself.

“We played the Nations League and, you know, we are playing Italy, the Euro champions, Hungary are a very good side so that is what the Nations League is good for, because you are playing in competitive matches.

“As a footballer you are never going to win every game. You want to win every game but you can’t win them all and the run we’ve had with England over the last four to five years has been sensational.

“Yeah, the results haven’t gone our way but we will rectify that come the World Cup.”

  • Italy stabbing: One dead and Arsenal player Pablo Marí among several injured

One person has died and at least five others have been injured – some seriously – in a stabbing in a supermarket near the Italian city of Milan, police have said.

Local media reported that a 30-year-old supermarket cashier died after a man started attacking people in Assago.

Among the injured was Pablo Marí, a football player on loan from Arsenal.

A 46-year-old suspect has been detained. Police have ruled out any terrorist motive.

Reports say the attacker has had mental health problems and had grabbed the weapon from the supermarket shelves.

The man started stabbing people at random at about 18:30 local time (16:30 GMT) at a Carrefour in a local shopping centre.

Screams were reportedly heard inside the centre, as terrified visitors tried to flee in panic.

The attacker is reported to have been detained by several customers and handed over to police who arrived at the scene.

Marí, a 29-year-old Spanish defender, suffered a stab wound to the back – but his injuries are not life-threatening. His agent, Arturo Canales, told the BBC that the star was conscious and no vital organs had been affected.

Monza CEO Adriano Galliani told Sky Italia that Marí had been shopping with his wife and young son when the attack took place.

“He had his son in a trolley and his wife next to him. He didn’t notice anything. He then felt something painful in his back, which was the criminal’s knife,” Mr Galliani said.

“Unfortunately, he also saw the criminal stab someone in the throat. He saw everything that happened and it was deeply disturbing,” Galliani added.

While the executive said the defender had suffered a “fairly deep wound on his back”, he said his life was not in danger and that he “should recover quickly”.

Marí joined Arsenal from Brazilian side Flamengo in January 2020. He has only played 19 times for the Gunners and is currently on loan with top flight Italian club Monza.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said: “I just found out. I know Edu [Arsenal technical director] has been in touch with his relatives. He’s in hospital but he seems to be okay.”

  • Bundesliga Matchday 12: Bayern bid to topple leaders Union Berlin

Bayern Munich have top spot in their sights — and they could reach the Bundesliga’s summit by securing a result against Mainz.

But that would require current leaders Union Berlin to drop points at home to Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday.

Meanwhile, inconsistent Borussia Dortmund face a tricky trip to fellow European hopefuls Eintracht Frankfurt, while RB Leipzig host lowly Bayer Leverkusen.

And bottom side Schalke could be in for another tough afternoon, with high-flying Freiburg their next opponents.

Game of the week: Bayern Munich vs Mainz (Saturday, 2.30pm)

Bayern Munich host in-form Mainz on Saturday — and there are sure to be goals at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern have only failed to score in one of their 32 league meetings with Die Nullfunfer, averaging an eye-watering 2.75 strikes per game across those fixtures.

Recent performances also suggest that a high scoreline could be on the cards, with both teams netting seven times without reply in their previous two Bundesliga matches.

Saturday’s clash will feature two red-hot strikers with Die Roten’s Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Mainz forward Marcus Ingvartsen both finding the net in each of their last four appearances.

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Borussia Dortmund (Saturday, 5.30pm)

The omens are in Dortmund’s favour ahead of their trip to Frankfurt — BVB have not beaten any Bundesliga side more often than Die Adler (47 times).

However, they come up against a team who have picked up 12 points from their last five league matches (won four, lost one) and will be relishing this weekend’s match-up.

Dortmund have lost each of their three previous away games in the competition, so will be severely tested by Frankfurt’s free-scoring attack.

Oliver Glasner’s men pose a particular threat from corners and free-kicks, having scored the most set-piece goals in Germany’s top tier this season (nine).

Union Berlin vs Borussia Monchengladbach (Sunday, 2.30pm)

Leaders Union Berlin lost to Bochum in their last league outing — but will fancy their chances of getting back to winning ways on home soil.

Urs Fischer’s side are on an 11-game unbeaten league run at the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei (won eight, drawn three) and have won their last five matches in the capital without conceding.

Die Eisernen will need to pay particular attention to Marcus Thuram though, with the Monchengladbach striker scoring five in his last four Bundesliga appearances.

The 25-year-old has previously netted three league goals against Union, so will be optimistic about extending that hot streak on Sunday.

RB Leipzig vs Bayer Leverkusen (Saturday, 2.30pm)

Buoyed by a memorable Champions League victory over Real Madrid in midweek, RB Leipzig will be hopeful of beating surprise strugglers Bayer Leverkusen.

Die Roten Bullen have picked up a commendable 11 points from six Bundesliga games since appointing former Dortmund manager Marco Rose, while no team has a better record at home this season (13 points).

And with just two defeats in 12 meetings with Leverkusen, history is also in Leipzig’s favour.

But right-back Jeremie Frimpong could be a thorn in the hosts’ side — he has the best chance-conversion rate in the division, scoring five goals from 50% of his shots.

    Schalke vs Freiburg (Sunday, 4.30pm)

Rock-bottom Schalke are desperate for a win after suffering defeat in each of their last six competitive games — the longest losing run in the club’s history.

However, the home side could be facing Freiburg at a good time, with the visitors failing to win their three most recent away league fixtures (drawn two, lost one).

They will still face a tough task breaking down one of the Bundesliga’s most resilient defences though.

The Breisgau Brazilians have kept more clean sheets than any other team in Germany’s top tier (six) and have conceded just 13 times — that is half of Schalke’s goals against tally (26).

    The weekend’s other games

Werder Bremen vs Hertha Berlin (Friday, 7.30pm)

    Stuttgart vs Augsburg (Saturday, 2.30pm)

    Wolfsburg vs Bochum (Saturday, 2.30pm)

FC Cologne vs Hoffenheim (Sunday, 6.30pm)

  • Vin Diesel, first human created by God? Meme tweet of ‘Adam’ 3D model goes viral

In a stunning development, internet users learned that the actor Vin Diesel bears an uncanny resemblance to scientists’ best guess of what Adam, the very first human who existed on Earth, looked like.

According to a tweet indie theater operator Alamo Drafthouse NYC posted Thursday, “Scientists at Princeton University have reconstructed this 3D model of how Adam, the first human being created by God, might have looked.” Undeniably, the image looks just like the action star of the “Fast & Furious” movie franchise.

The Vin-Diesel-as-first-man tweet rapidly spread across the Twitterverse, and currently has more than 125,000 likes and 30,000 retweets.

But (perhaps needless to say?) there’s no evidence of any such research project at Princeton. As Twitter put it rather clinically in its description of the trending topic, “Vin Diesel becomes the latest celebrity to fall into a meme trend of someone posting a picture of a celebrity or 3D-rendered character for humorous effect.”

In a subtle wink, Alamo Drafthouse NYC followed up its original post with the comment, “Just a reminder that we’re a movie theater, not an academic journal. That said, here’s our soundcloud” — linking not to SoundCloud, but to the theater’s landing page.

The joke was a riff on earlier viral memes, including one that purported to show a 3D model of how Joseph, husband of Mary, might have looked — which, it turns out, is the spitting image of Andre the Giant.

While some users were bamboozled or bemused by the Vin Diesel-Adam gag, others joined in on the fun:

  • US orders its diplomats to leave Nigerian capital

The United States has ordered some diplomatic staff and their relatives to leave Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, citing the risk of terror attacks.

The American embassy in Abuja has advised US citizens not to travel to the city.

It hasn’t given any details of the potential threat.

On Wednesday the US made a similar warning for South Africa, saying people in Sandton – a wealthy neighbourhood in Johannesburg – should stay away from crowded areas this weekend.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said it was “unfortunate” that Washington hadn’t spoken to his government before making the announcement.

  • Serie A Matchday 12: Champions Milan face tricky test at Torino

AC Milan will be looking to close the gap on table-toppers Napoli but face a tricky test at Torino this Sunday.

Stefano Pioli’s men will likely need to pick up all three points to stay in touch with their in-form rivals, who host Sassuolo at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

But Il Toro should be full of confidence after ending a run of five league games without victory by beating surprise package Udinese 2-1 last weekend.

Elsewhere, strugglers Lecce take on Juventus, Inter Milan face relegation-threatened Sampdoria and Roma head to Verona on Monday evening.

Game of the week: Torino vs AC Milan (Sunday, 7.45pm)

AC Milan should fancy their chances in Turin — they are unbeaten in 17 Serie A away matches (won 12, drawn five) and have not lost to Torino in their previous seven encounters.

Sunday’s hosts have failed to score a single Serie A goal against their upcoming opponents in 464 minutes after losing four league meetings in a row before registering a 0-0 draw last April.

The smart money might be on these teams sharing the points.

Torino have drawn seven of their last 11 home meetings with the Rossoneri — more than against any other team since 2006-07.

    Napoli vs Sassuolo (Saturday, 2pm)

Napoli continue to steamroller all that come before them — and Sassuolo are next in the firing line.

The visitors will be hoping to avoid the 6-1 hammering they suffered at the hands of Luciano Spalletti’s side last season but the form guide certainly favours the Neapolitans.

They have won 18 of their last 20 matches in all competitions and have not tasted defeat since last April.

Another triumph would equal Napoli’s best start after 12 matches (32 points), as well as Spalletti’s longest winning streak in Serie A (eight games).

Victor Osimhen scored his fourth Serie A goal of the season against Roma last weekend
Victor Osimhen scored his fourth Serie A goal of the season against Roma last weekend

    Lecce vs Juventus (Saturday, 5pm)

Lecce will not want to consult the history books before this fixture — they have only won four of 32 Serie A matches against Juventus.

A draw may be a more realistic outcome though, with the hosts registering a 1-1 scoreline in each of their last four home league games.

But Marco Baroni’s outfit will need to nullify Juve’s threat from corners and free-kicks to get a result.

The Old Lady have scored an impressive eight set-piece goals in 2022-23, while Lecce have conceded a league-high nine times from such scenarios.

Inter Milan vs Sampdoria (Saturday, 7.45pm)

Lautaro Martinez netted a brace in Inter Milan's 4-3 triumph at Fiorentina on Matchday 11
Lautaro Martinez netted a brace in Inter Milan’s 4-3 triumph at Fiorentina on Matchday 11

Inter Milan striker Edin Dzeko has gone seven home league games without scoring but should be confident of ending that run on Saturday.

The veteran striker bagged a brace against Viktoria Plzen on Wednesday night and has scored six Serie A goals against Sampdoria in his career.

Dejan Stankovic’s team will be also need to be wary of in-form attacker Lautaro Martinez, who has been involved in four goals in his last two league appearances.

He has registered more shots (43) and efforts on target (15) than any other player in Italy’s top flight this term.

    Verona vs Roma (Monday, 5.30pm)

Roma drew 2-2 with Verona when the two sides last met
Roma drew 2-2 with Verona when the two sides last met

Things could not be going much worse for Verona, who have lost six Serie A games in a row for just the third time in their history.

And it will be a challenge to stop that run against Roma, who have won three successive league matches away from home.

The Giallorossi are specialists when it comes to picking up points against struggling teams.

They have recorded five victories and two draws from their previous seven encounters with sides in the bottom three — though their last defeat to a club in the drop zone was against Verona in September 2021.

    The weekend’s other games

    Empoli vs Atalanta (Sunday, 11.30am)

    Cremonese vs Udinese (Sunday, 2pm)

    Spezia vs Fiorentina (Sunday, 2pm)

  • UN votes for Western Sahara talks to resume

The UN Security Council has voted for the resumption of negotiations between parties to the disputed Western Sahara.

The Thursday resolution called for the parties to resume negotiations “in good faith with a view to achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution” for Western Sahara.

Thirteen countries in the 15-member council voted in favour of the resolution, with Kenya and Russia abstaining.

Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, is disputed by the Algerian-backed Polisario Front and Morocco.

Morocco controls around 80% of Western Sahara and the rest is held by the Polisario movement – which fought with Morocco for years after Spanish forces withdrew in 1975.

The 16-year-long insurgency ended with a UN-brokered truce in 1991 and the promise of a referendum on independence which has yet to take place.

  • Isak injury ‘longer-term’ but Howe hopeful of return before Boxing Day

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe is hopeful record-signing Alexander Isak will be fit for when the Premier League resumes after the World Cup despite his injury being “longer-term” than first thought.

Isak joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in a deal potentially worth a reported £64.8million (€75m) in August, smashing the club’s previous transfer record of just under £40m (€46.3m) for Joelinton.

Newcastle had been linked with numerous strikers throughout pre-season as they looked to build on Howe’s positive start at St James’ Park last season, although the newly minted club had been put off by valuations they felt were trying to take advantage of their new-found Saudi wealth.

With the season already a few weeks old, Newcastle eventually stumped up the cash for Isak, and he made a positive start with two goals in three games, but the 23-year-old suffered a thigh injury on international duty with Sweden in late September and has not played since.

Isak had already been ruled out until after the World Cup, and although Howe revealed on Friday the injury is more severe than initially thought, Newcastle expect him to be back in training in December when the club have a mini pre-season to prepare for the Premier League’s Boxing Day return.

“Alex has been having a couple of injections into his thigh,” Howe told reporters ahead of Saturday’s visit of Aston Villa. “I believe that’s gone well, and the medical team are happy where he currently stands.

“But it is a longer-term injury, a five- or six-week injury. As I’ve said before, he won’t be back before the World Cup break.

“We’re hopeful, as we begin our second pre-season, he is ready to train.”

Newcastle’s last pre-World Cup game is on November 12 at home to Chelsea, and they return to action just over six weeks later on December 26, away to Leicester City.

The club have already confirmed plans to visit Saudi Arabia for a training camp, as they did in January.

That trip will include a friendly against Saudi Pro League champions Al-Hilal, scheduled for December 8.

  • Diamond magnate to be sworn in as Lesotho PM

Diamond magnate Sam Matekane is due to be sworn in as Lesotho’s new prime minister at Setsoto Stadium in Maseru, following the 7 October parliamentary elections.

His Revolution for Prosperity party, formed earlier this year, won the polls but failed to garner an outright majority in the 120-seat parliament, leading to the formation of a coalition government with the Alliance for Democrats and Movement for Economic Change parties.

According to the government website, over 30 heads of state and government have been invited to the swearing-in ceremony.

For a decade, none of Lesotho’s political parties has garnered enough votes to form a government on its own.

The country has, as a result, been run by coalition governments that have proved fractious, and no prime minister has served a full five-year term.

The small Southern African kingdom has experienced political instability since 2012, including a coup in 2014 and three national elections in five years.

He spoke to Bola Mosuro from the BBC’s Focus on Africa programme shortly after his election victory:

  • PSV 2-0 Arsenal: Hosts make sorry Gunners wait on top spot

Arsenal missed the chance to seal top spot in Group A with a game to spare as Joey Veerman and Luuk de Jong helped PSV to a 2-0 Europa League win over the Gunners at the Philips Stadion.

Lively duo Cody Gakpo and Xavi Simons both had first-half goals disallowed as Arsenal struggled, but PSV finally hit the front when Veerman picked out the top-right corner after the break.

De Jong was outstanding following his half-time introduction, and he got himself on the scoresheet by beating Aaron Ramsdale to a corner delivery as Arsenal crumbled.

The result saw PSV seal their own place in the knockout stage, also keeping alive their chances of usurping Arsenal for top spot.

Arsenal were warned of PSV’s intentions when Gakpo lifted a cool finish over Ramsdale 18 minutes in, only to be denied by the offside flag.

The uninspired Gunners required another reprieve as half-time approached.

Simons somehow squirmed through several challenges before prodding past Ramsdale, but a VAR review spotted an offside in the build-up to halt the hosts’ celebrations.

However, Arsenal’s luck finally ran out nine minutes after the restart, when Veerman took advantage of De Jong’s excellent hold-up play to fire home left-footed.

Mikel Arteta’s men struggled to cope with De Jong throughout the second half, and he made sure of the points when he beat Ramsdale to Gakpo’s corner with a firm header shortly after the hour mark.

Gakpo saw another goal chalked off for offside and De Jong went close with two more headers, but PSV still cruised to victory.

What does it mean? Gunners get reality check

Arsenal’s scintillating start to the season has led to suggestions Arteta’s men could launch a genuine Premier League title bid, while they also entered Thursday’s match looking to defend a perfect record in Europe this term.

Arteta has repeatedly spoken of the importance of topping Group A in order to avoid extra knockout fixtures in the new year, but the Gunners’ hopes of doing so were dealt a serious blow by a brilliant PSV display.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team managed just four shots against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last week – their lowest tally in all competitions since November 2016, but they looked a side transformed on home soil as they dealt the Gunners a deserved defeat.

De Jong plays super sub role

PSV did see two goals ruled out before the break, but the sum of their lively performance amounted to just two shots, and one on target, prior to De Jong’s introduction as a half-time substitute.

The former Barcelona striker was in inspired form after entering the fray, however, teeing up the opener before netting a trademark header.

The striker’s goal was his 23rd in European competition while playing for an Eredivisie team, a tally only bettered by Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (24) in the 21st century.

    Gakpo in shop window

Gakpo has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for the likes of Manchester United following his fine performances in recent months, and the 23-year-old’s pace and trickery was on full display here.

As well as registering his second assist in the Europa League this season, Gakpo created a team-high three chances during an electrifying display.

    What’s next?

Arsenal host Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Sunday before facing Zurich in their final Europa League group game next Thursday. The Gunners will need to win that match to be sure of top spot, with PSV bidding to overtake them when they visit Bodo/Glimt.

  • Fire consumes a section of Kenya’s Mount Longonot

A fire outbreak has consumed hectares of bushland in Kenya’s Mount Longonot, which is a popular destination for hikers in the Rift Valley region.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) says in a statement that it put out the fire that began on Thursday.

KWS refuted rumours circulating on social media that there had been a volcanic eruption, and said it wanted to “assure that the park is safe to all visitors”.

The mountain, which is a dormant volcano, has been one of the most talked about topics on Twitter, with some users claiming they experienced earth tremors as a result of the supposed eruption.

The cause of the fire on the mountain has not yet been established.

Last year, a similar outbreak of fire reduced a portion of vegetation in the park to ashes.

  • Manchester United 3-0 FC Sheriff: Ronaldo returns with a goal

Cristiano Ronaldo marked his return with a goal as Manchester United kept their Europa League last-16 hopes alive with a routine 3-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol.

A pair of headers from Diego Dalot and Marcus Rashford put United in control before Ronaldo wrapped up the points nine minutes from time and secured a top-two finish in Group E.

Erik ten Hag‘s side must now beat leaders Real Sociedad by two goals next week to usurp the LaLiga outfit at the group summit and avoid a trickier clash in the play-off knockout round.

United dominated the first half with over three-quarters of the possession while registering 13 shots on goal without reply.

Antony and Tyrell Malacia drew smart saves out of Maksym Koval, who also demonstrated brilliant reflexes to deny Ronaldo a tap-in from Bruno Fernandes’ knockdown.

The hosts were almost punished as Rasheed Ibrahim was whiskers away from connecting with Patrick Kpozo’s deep cross but they finally broke through in the dying moments of the opening period as Dalot powered home Christian Eriksen’s inviting corner.

Ronaldo went close to doubling the lead when he fired narrowly over in the 58th minute before his close-range volley was disallowed for offside.

United did establish breathing space seven minutes later as a patient build-up culminated in Rashford brilliantly heading home Luke Shaw’s centre to end a five-match scoreless streak.

Ronaldo was not to be denied and put the icing on the cake with nine minutes remaining, firing home at the second attempt after Koval had parried his initial header from Fernandes’ cross.

What does it mean? United still in with a shout

Guaranteed a top-two finish in Group E, United will now be focused on steering clear of the Europa League play-off round, with the likes of Juventus and Barcelona already among the third-placed teams dropping down from the Champions League.

As for Sheriff, whose attention switches to ensuring a place in the Europa Conference League after failing to register a single shot on goal, they have now lost four successive matches in major European competition for the first time.

    Redemption for Ronaldo

It was written in the stars as Ronaldo returned to the spotlight with a goal at the Stretford End.

After a game-high tally of seven shots – three of which were on target – the Portugal captain’s persistence eventually paid in the 81st minute with his maiden Old Trafford strike of the campaign.

    Excellent Eriksen

The Denmark international controlled the tempo of the contest during another commanding display in the middle of the park.

Eriksen led the way with no other player surpassing his tallies of touches (131), passes (115) and key passes (six), while he also gained possession on a game-high eight occasions.

    What’s next?

Both sides return to domestic action on Sunday before completing their group stage campaigns next week. United host West Ham in the Premier League, while Superliga leaders Sheriff welcome Dacia-Buiucani.

  • Why two Indians disappeared on a July night in Kenya

Two Indian tourists and their local driver disappeared in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, on a July night.

More than two months after the incident, nine policemen have been arrested in connection with the case, which India says it is “closely watching”. The BBC pieces together the mystery and highlights the many unanswered questions.

In one of his last social media posts before he disappeared, Zulfiqar Ahmad Khan shared a video of a roaring lion in Kenya’s Maasai Mara game reserve where he had been holidaying.

“Magical mornings in Maasai Mara. Just imagine when the first encounter you have is with Simba. Breakfast anyone?” he wrote in a typically cheerful post.

The 48-year-old Indian media marketing professional had last worked as the chief operating officer of Balaji Telefilms, a Mumbai-based TV company.

Mr Khan’s LinkedIn profile described him as a “results-driven, people-focussed business leader” with more than 19 years of experience in broadcast and digital media companies; and a “high energy, performance-driven coach, mentor and manager”.

His friends described him as a “keen sportsman, a foodie, an avid traveller and explorer” and a cricket lover.

After quitting his job in June, Mr Khan had travelled in Kenya for a month. His Facebook and Instagram feeds were filled with pictures and videos of his time in the country: breakfasts in Nairobi, afternoons in game parks.

    Mr Khan and MrIMAGE SOURCE,FACEBOOK
Image caption, Mr Khan and Mr Kidwai (rear) in Nairobi two days before they disappeared

Four days before he disappeared, he called up friends and sounded excited about exploring Kenya.

One of them was Rajiv Dubey, a Delhi-based marketing professional, who had known him for 24 years. “He sounded very happy. He had spoken to some of his friends just days earlier and talked about wildlife at length and advised them to visit this ‘lovely’ place,” Mr Dubey said.

Mr Khan told friends he would return home on 24 July and that he also wanted to come back to Kenya to witness the annual “Great Migration” – when more than a million wildebeest and herd animals migrate to the rolling grasslands of Maasai Mara.

On the night of 22 July, Mr Khan vanished, along with another Indian man and a Kenyan driver.

The second Indian was Mohammad Zaid Sami Kidwai, 36, who had also come to Nairobi on a tourist visa. Information about Mr Kidwai, who hailed from the northern Indian city of Lucknow and lived in Dubai, remains sketchy.

Media reports in Kenya described him as an “information and communication technology expert” who led a “private life”.

In a letter to the Indian High Commission in Nairobi in July, his wife Ambreen Kidwai said her husband had been visiting Kenya since February for tourism.

Four men have been accused of killing of two Indians and their Kenyan taxi driver.
Image caption, At least nine Kenyan policemen have been arrested in connection with the case

She described Mr Khan as her husband’s friend, and said both of them had stepped out of the Nairobi hotel they were staying in and headed to a bar at 22:45 on 22 July.

Mrs Kidwai said she had “texted” her husband close to midnight asking when he would return. He texted back saying he would leave the bar in “15 minutes”.

She nodded off soon after and when she woke up at 03:00, she found that her husband had not returned, Mrs Kidwai said.

She called her husband’s – and the driver’s – phone, but both seemed to be switched off. She checked with “mutual friends” in Nairobi, but the two men were not with any of them.

Next day, Mrs Kidwai went to the police and reported her missing husband and Mr Khan. She also went to the bar and sought the CCTV footage – it showed the two Indians leaving the place close to one in the morning and getting into a Toyota sedan. She also identified an abandoned car that the police had found as the one in which her husband and Mr Khan were travelling.

Back in Mumbai, Mr Khan’s friends were worrying about him.

They said there was “complete silence” after 21 July – no social media updates, no phone calls – and “what worried the friends the most – our WhatsApp [messages] weren’t showing as received”.

Image caption, The police suspect that the men were killed and dumped in Aberdare national park

With the police in Kenya appearing to be making no headway and after waiting for 70 days, friends launched a petition seeking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s help in finding Mr Khan – it has been signed by more than 10,000 people so far.

“Zulfi just doesn’t visit a country or a place – but spends weeks exploring the area, soaking himself into its history and culture,” his friends wrote in the petition.

His trip to Kenya, they said, was “the explorer in Zulfi wanting to experience a new country… and then Zulfi just disappeared. Without a trace. No contact with family and friends”.

    What happened to the men

Quoting officials, the local media reported that the two Indians were in Kenya to help the election campaign of William Ruto, a charismatic 55-year-old politician who was sworn in as the country’s fifth president in September, following a narrow win.

The Indians went missing together with their local driver Nicodemus Mwania soon after being picked up by police in Nairobi, reports said.

Nearly three months later, Kenyan police claimed to have made headway: nine policemen have been arrested since 21 October in connection with what they believe is an incident of kidnapping and murder of the three men.

Image caption, President Ruto recently disbanded an elite police squad blamed for extrajudicial killings and disappearances

The policemen were part of an elite squad called Special Services Unit that was disbanded by President Ruto last week for allegedly carrying out extrajudicial killings and disappearances of suspects over several years, according to Kenya’s Internal Affairs Unit, which investigates complaints against policemen.

Human rights groups say their independent investigations have linked the squad and other police units to the death of more than 600 people over the past four years. Some of the bodies were later recovered in rivers in western and northern Kenya.

The suspects in the case of the missing Indians include a chief inspector of police, a corporal and police drivers. “They have not been charged yet for us to officially deny the allegations,” Danstan Omari, the suspects’ lawyer, said.

“But my clients feel this is a political witch-hunt and malicious. They are being targeted because of politics,” Mr Omari said.

According to an affidavit filed by the police in the court on Monday, the taxi carrying the Indians was forcibly stopped by a group of men travelling in a Subaru vehicle on a Nairobi road. The Indians and their driver were then abducted and driven in another vehicle to the Aberdare forest, some 150km (93 miles) from the city, where they were allegedly killed and “their bodies were dumped”.

The affidavit talks about at least four suspects, including one man who had planned a similar abduction of three other people in Nairobi.

Image caption, Kenyan activists have been protesting against extrajudicial killings by police

A search in the forest last week yielded nothing apart from a few “clothes and other items”, which would be sent for DNA examinations, the police told the court. A local newspaper reported that “bones and belts” were also found at the spot, but this could not be verified independently.

The police said the kidnapping of the Indians and their driver was a “multi-agency operation between the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and other security agencies”.

The two Indians were in Kenya for “business and commercial purposes,” according to the police.

    A twist in the tale

But the family and friends of Mr Khan strongly deny that he was in Kenya for business. Mrs Kidwai also said in her letter that her husband was there as a tourist.

“Zulfi never told me or his friends about any job he was doing for the election campaign there. He would always call me up if he was doing something new,” Mr Dubey said.

But Dennis Itumbi, a consultant who ran the digital campaign for President Ruto, said the two Indians had “indeed assisted” in the social media campaign.

    Dennis Itumbi
Image caption, Dennis Itumbi, who led the digital campaign for President Ruto, said the two Indians had helped in the campaign

“I met both of them a number of times in Nairobi. I knew where they used to stay. I was on a Telegram group with them. They were not employed by the campaign, but they gave us some ideas, some of which we used,” Mr Itumbi told me on the phone from Nairobi.

Ahmednassir Abdullah, the lawyer for the Indian families, told me: “They were helping one of the presidential candidates in some small [social] media. I think they were experts on how to make short videos of political rallies. I think both of them did something small, very peripheral [to the campaign].”

    The unanswered questions

The police say they need to carry out “further investigations and gather more confirmatory evidence” to link the suspects to the disappearance of the three men.

Clearly there are many unanswered questions.

Did the two Indians know each other from before? Did they work for the Kenyan presidential election campaign and get caught up in political feuds? Why were they allegedly kidnapped? Whose remains have the police found?

    Nobody quite knows.

  • West Ham 1-0 Silkeborg: Hammers cruise into next round

West Ham cruised into the Europa Conference League last 16 as group winners, after a 1-0 win against Silkeborg confirmed their qualification with a game to spare.

Manuel Lanzini’s 24th-minute penalty was enough to secure victory for the Irons, following goalkeeper Nicolai Larsen’s foul on Michail Antonio.

The game was in West Ham’s control throughout but failing to double their advantage created a nervous ending.

However, David Moyes‘ side did more than enough for the three points and to retain their perfect start in the competition.

Hammers frontman Antonio was pleased with the result — but felt his side could have been more clinical in attack.

He said: “I feel going forward we could have been a little bit better but it is a good professional win at the end of the day and we have done the job.”

The striker added: “The only goal we scored was by a penalty and for the football that we were playing, we probably should have scored more in open play.

“The keeper pulled off some good saves and a defender saved one off the line so on another day we could have got three.

“So we’ve got to take the positives, we got the win, and did the job that needed to be done.”

Reflecting on the first-half penalty that he won, Antonio continued: “Yeah, there was a little bit of contact but obviously in that situation he [Larsen] should not be giving me a choice to go down.”

Michail Antonio won West Ham a decisive penalty at the London Stadium

Moyes has overseen a perfect start to West Ham’s Europa Conference League campaign — and the Scottish tactician had his say on why the East Londoners could not get a second goal.

He said: “You could simply put it down to poor finishing.

“I think we gave the ball away, I think we made wrong decisions in the final third, didn’t weight some passes correctly, didn’t make the cut-back well enough, didn’t pick the cross out well enough.

“Saying that, we still had chances, we had two or three players that probably should’ve got us a goal.”

Defender Nayef Aguerd finally made his West Ham debut, after picking up an injury in pre-season — and Moyes reflected on the Moroccan’s first outing.

“What I will say is it was the perfect game to come back, it was a really good game for him. There wasn’t an awful lot of contact which meant he could play the game, control the ball,” he explained.

“You could see he was flagging just after the 60th minute and we took him off.”

  • Ukraine war: Russia deploys dozens of drones in two days – Zelensky

President Volodymyr Zelensky says Russia has launched more than 30 drone attacks on Ukraine in just two days.

He added that in total, Moscow had also carried out some 4,500 missile strikes and over 8,000 air raids.

Speaking from Kyiv and standing beside what appeared to be a downed Iranian Shahed drone, Mr Zelensky pledged to “clip the wings” of Moscow’s air power.

Western officials believe Iran has supplied a large number of drones to Russia, but Moscow and Tehran deny it.

It comes as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called Russia’s aggressive use of drones “appalling”.

The top US diplomat accused Russian commanders of using the devices to “kill Ukrainian civilians and destroy the infrastructure they rely on for electricity, for water, for heat” during a visit to the Canadian capital Ottawa.

“Canada and the United States will keep working with our allies and partners to expose, to deter, and to counter Iran’s provision of these weapons,” Mr Blinken said.

In recent weeks, Russian attacks have targeted Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure, damaging the country’s electricity and water supply just as temperatures begin to drop.

Western countries say Iran is supplying its domestically developed drones to Moscow and that Iranian military experts are on the ground in Russian-occupied Crimea to provide technical support to pilots.

Kyiv has identified the drones used in some attacks on its infrastructure as Iranian Shahed-136 drones. They are known as “kamikaze” drones because they are destroyed in the attack – named after the Japanese fighter pilots who flew suicide missions in World War Two.

Ukraine says around 400 drones have already been used by Russia, from a total order of roughly 2,000 weapons.

But Tehran has repeatedly denied that it has struck any arms deal with the Kremlin, and Moscow also denies using Iranian drones.

On Wednesday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian called the accusations “baseless” and urged Ukraine to “present any evidence supporting the accusations”.

“If… it becomes clear to us that Russia has used Iranian drones in the war against Ukraine, we will definitely not be indifferent about this issue,” he added.

    Graphic of Shahed 136 drone

Tehran’s regional adversary, Israel, has also attacked Iran over the alleged exports. During a meeting with US President Joe Biden at the White House on Thursday, President Isaac Herzog slammed the regime’s activities.

“The fact that Iran, following its activities in killing its own citizens, in working towards nuclear weapons endlessly, endangering the entire world and the region — and now killing innocent civilians in Ukraine, clearly that gives you a picture of what Iran is all about,” Mr Herzog said.

Prior to the visit, he had pledged to share “proof” with Mr Biden that Iran was supplying the weapons.

Meanwhile, US officials have said they will supply Ukraine with an additional $275m (£237m) of military aid, according to the Associated Press.

The assistance is expected to be used to restock ammunition for Ukrainian artillery systems, including the HIMARS launchers that Kyiv’s forces have used to great effect.

On the ground, fighting has slowed in recent days, with a much anticipated Ukrainian advance on the southern city of Kherson stalled due to poor weather.

  • Elon Musk completes $44bn Twitter takeover

The world’s richest man, Elon Musk, has completed his $44bn (£38.1bn) takeover of Twitter, according to US media and an investor in the firm.

He tweeted “the bird is freed”, in an apparent reference to the deal closing.

A number of top executives, including the boss, Parag Agrawal, have reportedly been fired.

It brings to a close a saga that saw Twitter go to court to hold the multi-billionaire to the terms of a takeover deal that he had tried to escape.

Twitter has not yet confirmed the takeover, but an early investor in the company told the BBC that the deal had been completed.

Mr Musk, a self-styled “free speech absolutist”, has been critical of Twitter’s moderation policies and the news will be greeted with mixed feelings by Twitter users and employees.

Many people on the right of US politics will celebrate the exit of Mr Agrawal as chief executive. They view people like Mr Agrawal, and his predecessor, Jack Dorsey, as liberals who are curtailing free speech.

They also think that under their stewardship, Twitter has censored conservative voices – an accusation that Twitter denied.

Mr Agrawal, chief financial officer Ned Segal, and the firm’s top legal and policy executive, Vijaya Gadde, are no longer with the company, according to US media reports.

Mr Agrawal and Mr Segal were escorted out of Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters after the deal closed, the Reuters news agency reported.

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone thanked Mr Agrawal, Mr Segal and Ms Gadde for their “collective contribution” to the business.

Meanwhile, Bret Taylor – who had served as Twitter’s chairman since last November – updated his LinkedIn profile to indicate that he was no longer in the post.

It is not clear yet whether the reported board clear-out is the opening salvo in company-wide job cuts.

Ross Gerber, president and chief executive of Gerber Kawasaki Wealth and Investment Management, and a shareholder in both Twitter and Mr Musk’s other company Tesla, told the BBC that reports suggesting 75% of staff at the social media company will lose their jobs were “inaccurate”.

He said job losses would depend on “how good the staff is” but and that the original figure mentioned was 50%.

“There are a lot of talented people at Twitter, especially on the engineering side and they want to retain as much of that talent as possible,” Mr Gerber said.

“Really what they’re looking at from the trimming side is management [and] they’ve already started with upper management,” said Mr Gerber. He said cuts are then likely to extend to product managers “and products they’ve been working on that aren’t going anywhere”.

    Image caption,

Twitter’s boss Parag Agrawal is already out, reports say

The social media platform’s shares will be suspended from trading on Friday, according to the New York Stock Exchange’s website.

Mr Musk said he bought the social media platform to help humanity and he wanted “civilisation to have a common digital town square”.

Earlier this week, Mr Musk tweeted a video of himself walking into Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco carrying a kitchen sink with the caption: “let that sink in!”

He also changed his Twitter profile to read “Chief Twit”.

On a recent earnings call, the Tesla owner said Twitter was “an asset that has just sort of languished for a long time, but has incredible potential, although obviously myself and the other investors are overpaying for Twitter right now”.

    A long road

Mr Musk’s early investments in Twitter initially escaped public attention. In January, he began making regular purchases of shares, so that by the middle of March he had accumulated a 5% stake in the firm.

In April, he was revealed as Twitter’s largest shareholder, and by the end of the month, a deal was finally reached to buy the company for $44bn.

He said he planned to clean up spam accounts and preserve the platform as a venue for free speech.

But by mid-May Mr Musk, a prolific Twitter user, had begun to change his mind about the purchase, citing concerns that the number of fake accounts on the platform was higher than Twitter claimed.

In July, he said he no longer wished to acquire the company. Twitter, however, argued the billionaire was legally committed to the acquisition and eventually filed a lawsuit to hold him to the deal.

In early October, Mr Musk revived his takeover plans for the company on condition that legal proceedings were paused.

    Change ahead

There has been no comment yet from Twitter about its new management team, but whoever becomes its next chief executive, it is clear that Mr Musk will ultimately be in charge of the company.

He fell out with Mr Agrawal in early April – when he sat briefly on Twitter’s board.

In private messages revealed in court filings, Mr Musk talked about how Mr Agrawal didn’t understand how to fix the social media platform’s problems.

It appears now Mr Musk is at the helm, many people who have been banned for hate speech or disinformation may be invited back to the platform.

Mr Musk has described the decision to exclude former US President Donald Trump as “foolish” and said he would reverse it.

Mr Trump was permanently suspended from Twitter in January 2021 following the attack by his supporters on the Capitol building in Washington which resulted in the deaths of five people. Twitter said it wanted to avoid the risk that his tweets would incite further violence.

Mr Trump has insisted he won’t be reactivating his account – preferring instead to post on his own platform Truth Social.

Mr Musk has posted that his plans for Twitter include “X, the app for everything”.

  • Iniesta says Xavi will enjoy a ‘remarkable’ career despite mounting pressure

Xavi has been backed to enjoy a “remarkable” coaching career by former team-mate Andres Iniesta, despite Barcelona’s Champions League exit on Wednesday.

Barca trail Real Madrid by just three points at the top of LaLiga after winning nine of their first 11 games this season, but have received heavy criticism following another European failure.

Inter’s 4-0 win over Viktoria Plzen put Barca out of contention for a top-two finish in Group C on Wednesday, and the Blaugrana failed to salvage any pride in a subsequent 3-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich – their sixth consecutive Champions League loss to the Bavarians.

Iniesta, however, believes Xavi will recover from that setback, telling Corriere dello Sport it brings him “so much joy” to see his former midfield partner in the Camp Nou dugout.

“He is a friend and he will have a remarkable career,” Iniesta said. “He is prepared, he has studied and had Barcelona as his guide.”

Iniesta now captains Japanese side Vissel Kobe, and while the 38-year-old acknowledges his own career is drawing to a close, he is unsure whether he will follow Xavi into coaching.

“I know that when I have to quit, it won’t be a great day,” he added. “I will think back to when my dad used to take me to play, I will regret many things.

“Then I will also think about the future, I don’t know yet if I will be a coach or a sporting director. I still don’t have clear ideas.”

Iniesta and Xavi formed one of the most iconic midfield partnerships in football history, contributing to four Champions League triumphs between 2005-06 and 2014-15 during a golden age for Barca.

Young midfielders Pedri and Gavi have earned comparisons to that duo after emerging as key players in Xavi’s side, and Iniesta hopes they can replicate their achievements.

“They said to me that I resembled [Pep] Guardiola, then there was Xavi,” Iniesta said. “Now it is up to Pedri and Gavi. Football works in cycles.”

  • Klopp fined but dodges touchline ban for red card in victory over Man City

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been fined but is set to avoid a touchline ban following an outburst during his team’s Premier League win over Manchester City.

The German was dismissed for a rant towards assistant referee Gary Beswick in the October 16 match that saw Mohamed Salah’s strike hand the Reds a morale-boosting win over the champions.

Klopp subsequently apologised for his actions and accepted the initial Football Association charge, for which he has now been served his punishment.

“Jurgen Klopp has been fined £30,000 for breaching FA rule E3 during Liverpool FC’s Premier League match against Manchester City FC on Sunday 16th October 2022,” read an FA statement.

“The manager accepted that his behaviour during the 86th minute was improper, and an independent regulatory commission imposed his sanction during a hearing.

“This sanction is subject to appeal by either Jurgen Klopp or the FA following receipt of the independent regulatory commission’s written reasons.”

  • Akufo-Addo to finally address Ghanaians on economic crisis this Sunday

President Akufo-Addo will on Sunday, October 30, 2022, at 8PM speak to Ghanaians over the current economic hardships facing the country.

Since Ghana’s economy turned sour, President Akufo-Addo has not officially addressed the nation.

This left many, particularly members of the opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC) peeved, as they argued that the President must assume his mandate and provide hope to Ghanaians.

Pressure group OccupyGhana urged the President to update the citizenry on the state of the economy and the general affairs of the country, as he did during the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“No one expects the President to physically halt the fall of the cedi or conjure inflation away. However, it is imperative in such times that Ghanaians get the reassurance that their elected leader is doing all he can and that he cares. The cedi is ‘burning’. The Ghanaian economy is in tatters. It is a disaster. Yet we do not see commanding leadership in this matter,” the group said.

President Akufo-Addo is expected to speak on the calls for the dismissal of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as well as the country’s engagement with the International Monetary Fund.

Under Mr Ofori-Atta’s watch, the country battles a high inflation rate of 37.2% as of September and a depreciation of the cedi.

A dollar is currently trading at about GH14. Also, fuel prices have escalated and transport fares have been revised three times just this year.

  • Nuttall penalty brace helps Scunthorpe end five-game run without a win

Two penalties from Joe Nuttall helped Scunthorpe earn their first league win in five games after coming from behind to beat Gateshead 3-1.

The Iron move out of the National League relegation zone and into 20th, but the Heed are now third from bottom.

Gateshead took the lead nine minutes in when Adam Campbell slotted home from close range and had multiple chances to add a second, but goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst saved efforts from Greg Olley and Dan Ward.

Scunthorpe were awarded a penalty and Joe Nuttall converted from the penalty spot to equalise in the 43rd minute.

The Iron then took the lead four minutes into the second-half when Caolan Lavery headed home from a corner and his effort bounced in from the crossbar.

Nuttall got his brace three minutes into stoppage time after Scunthorpe were awarded their second penalty of the night, and he made no mistake from the spot again.

  • Altrincham beat Oldham thanks to Conn-Clarke strike

Chris Conn-Clarke scored the only goal as Altrincham continued their impressive recent form with a 1-0 victory over Greater Manchester rivals Oldham.

A frenetic start to proceedings saw Oldham go close when Ben Tollitt saw his effort go just over the crossbar.

Altrincham also had an early chance when Eddy Jones cut in from the left but his shot was saved by Magnus Norman.

Alty broke the deadlock with just under 20 minutes left on the clock when Conn-Clarke smashed into the top corner from 20 yards in spectacular fashion.

Oldham missed a big chance to equalise in the dying seconds when Conor Carty got on the end of a cross but his goalbound shot went into the grateful grasp of Oliver Byrne.

  • The Beetle and Robo Girl go home on ‘Masked Singer’ Muppets Night

It’s time to play the music. It’s time to light the lights!

Yes, if you’ve been dreaming of another Muppet Show-Masked Singer crossover since Kermit the Frog played the Snail in Season 5 and was declared the “most famous guest ever” to compete on the show, that wish was granted this week — with <wildly flailing Kermit arms> an amazing all-Muppets The Masked Singer episode.

On Wednesday, Kermit returned to the Masked Singer stage, this time with his trusty banjo in tow, to cold-open the show with a feel-good “Rainbow Connection” group number — and later, he even played piano on a Queen classic! Apparently both Rowlf and Dr. Teeth were unavailable to tickle the ivories this week, but there were plenty of other famous felt friends on board.

Fozzy the Bear was stationed backstage as the night’s behind-the-scenes roving reporter, the Snowths showed up for a “Mah Na Mah Na” singalong, and there was even a drummmmm soloooo by Animal himself.

Really, all that was missing was Scooter with his clipboard in hand, overseeing the proceedings. But we did have Miss Piggy as a guest judge, ruthlessly interrogating the night’s mystery contestants. (Her direct line of questioning: “What are your names?” and “What are your Instagram handles?”)

Of course, Miss Piggy didn’t have to wait long to learn the answers to her tough queries, because by the end of the hour-long episode, two of this week’s three contestants had already been unmasked. (Last week, I posted a lengthy rant complaining about how this season’s new format, which features an almost immediate double-elimination every week, has sucked a lot of the fun and suspense out of this series’ guessing game.)

The first to go home Wednesday was crooner the Beetle, who showed up in a mop-top wig and Cavern Club suit, but unlike this season’s Eric “The Hedgehog” Idle apparently didn’t have the connections to secure Paul McCartney’s permission to cover an actual Beatles song.

Instead, he serenaded Kermit with “The Way You Look Tonight” — and honestly, that moment was absolutely adorable. The Beetle had a passable voice, but he clearly wasn’t a professional singer, so it wasn’t surprising when he received the fewest votes of the night. What was surprising was it turned out be “Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!” — yes, the one-and-only Jerry Springer, as guessed correctly by judge Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg — inside that natty insect outfit.

“I gotta tell you, first of all, you’re an amazing singer and dancer. Let me put that out there. You’re very, very good,” Jenny assured Jerry, while judge Nicole Scherzinger concurred: “Honestly, Jerry, you really are a natural crooner.”

“I don’t know what to say, but all my life I’ve been looking for a woman with no taste,” Jerry joked self-deprecatingly. More seriously, when host Nick Cannon asked him why he’d signed up for this show, Jerry answered, “There’s so many serious things going on in the world, to be able to do something that’s just fun and silly and whatever— I appreciate it.”

Wednesday’s second castoff was last week’s reigning queen, the Robo Girl, who — unlike semifinalist the Harp from this season’s previous bracket, who defended her crown for three consecutive episodes — was unable to hold onto her title. The fierce fembot turned out to be singer, dancer, and Vampire Diaries actress Kat Graham, as I’d suspected last week.

But even though Kat didn’t make it to the semifinals, she got to belt “Bohemian Rhapsody” in neon-pink-eyed Transformers armor while Kermit the Frog accompanied her on a grand piano — so as far as I’m concerned, she has won at life.

“This was an amazing opportunity,” gushed Kat. This was unreal. And the Muppets!” Yep, if Kat couldn’t go the distance, at least she stuck around long enough to rub green felt elbows with an icon.

So, this meant that there was a new reigning queen, or queens, for Season 8’s second bracket: a fluffy flock named the Lambs. These pop-starlets-in-sheep’s-clothing looked so cute and cuddly in their matching Little-Bo-Beep pinafores (Nick’s favorite costume of Season 8 so far), I imagine Miss Piggy was a bit jealous — even though the Lambs actually cited Piggy as their style icon. The Lambs sweetly bleated on Katy Perry’s “Hot ‘n’ Cold” and then successfully battled the Robo Girl on Blondie’s “Call Me,” and both vivacious performances had Jenny shouting, “I frickin’ love you!” Nicole told them, “I feel like y’all are professionals. … That was natural; it feels like something you do in big stadiums and arenas.”

So now, it’s finally time to actually play this show’s guessing game. Who are the Lambs?

Perusing their clues package, we know these curly girls are “besties” who grew up together. We also saw references to SoCal cities Beverly Hills and Venice, a giant diamond ring, and the word “FAMOUS” emblazoned on a pair of designer jeans. And we know they’ve worked with Paul McCartney, even if they also didn’t phone Macca to get clearance for a Beatles tune.

So, the judges guessed HAIM or the Chicks, but based on these clues, I feel very confident that these musical muttons-with-chops are California girl group Wilson Phillips. Chynna Phillips, Carnie Wilson, and Wendy Wilson have fame in their genes (get it?) as the offspring of the Mamas and the Papas’ John and Michelle Phillips and the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson; the diamond ring could be a reference to Bridesmaids, which featured a memorable Wilson Phillips cameo; and the group contributed backup vocals to McCartney’s hit “FourFiveSeconds” in 2015.

Can the Lambs trio hold on for just one more day — or will they only last one episode, like the newly dethroned Robo Girl? Find out next week, when they compete against two more new contestants.

  • Barcelona 0-3 Bayern Munich: Humiliated Barca fail to progress

Bayern Munich eased to a 3-0 win to compound a miserable day for Barcelona as they were eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage for a second successive season.

Inter’s 4-0 win against Viktoria Plzen earlier on Wednesday had already sealed Barca’s fate, which led to a sombre mood from the first whistle at Camp Nou.

First-half goals from Sadio Mane and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting were followed by a Benjamin Pavard strike with the last kick of the game.

Bayern were already through from Group C but confirmed themselves as group winners ahead of Inter with this win, with Barca dropping into the Europa League.

It took just 10 minutes for Bayern to strike after Serge Gnabry played a ball through to Mane, who outpaced Hector Bellerin before calmly dinking the ball past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The second also came thanks to an assured pass from Gnabry as Bayern countered and Choupo-Moting was slipped in on the right of the penalty area, firing his shot through the legs of Ter Stegen just after the half-hour mark.

The hosts thought they had a penalty just before half-time when referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot after Robert Lewandowski was felled by Matthijs de Ligt, but a VAR check revealed the Dutch centre-back got a touch on the ball before any contact was made with the former Bayern man.

Gnabry had the ball in the net with a terrific left-foot finish to Ter Stegen’s right 10 minutes into the second half, yet his effort was ruled out for offside.

A game that had the feeling of a dead rubber fizzled out, with Lewandowski and Co. never looking like getting back into the game before Gnabry had his third assist of the night as his volley from a corner found Pavard at the far post for a tap-in.

What does it mean? Another season of Champions League heartache for Blaugrana

It was a somewhat eerie night at Camp Nou, with their relegation to the Europa League confirmed before a ball had been kicked.

That coupled with the early goal from Mane seemed to put the writing on the wall, with a number of Barca fans seemingly leaving the stadium at half-time as their team failed to land a single shot on target compared to the visitors’ eight.

This was the first time Barca have been dumped out of the Champions League group stage in back-to-back seasons since the 1997-98 and 1998-99 campaigns under Louis van Gaal.

Bogey boys Bayern beat Barca… again

Barca and Bayern seem to face each other on a regular basis on Europe’s biggest stage, which has been pretty bad news for the Catalan giants.

This was just the fifth time they have been beaten twice by the same team in a Champions League campaign, with Bayern responsible for four of those (also 1998-99, 2012-13 and 2021-22) — Dynamo Kyiv being the only other side to manage it (1997-98).

    No happy reunion for Lewandowski

It was the obvious story when these two were drawn together in Group C following Lewandowski’s high-profile transfer from Munich to Barcelona at the end of last season.

Having failed to score in the first game at the Allianz Arena despite a series of chances, the Polish striker was anonymous here, having just 34 touches in his 82 minutes on the pitch, as well as two shots and a passing accuracy of only 61.9 per cent (13 of 21).

    What’s next?

Barcelona travel to Valencia in LaLiga action on Saturday, while it is back to the Bundesliga for Bayern as they host Mainz on the same day.

  • Why sack Ofori-Atta and leave ‘incompetent’ Akufo-Addo – Blakk Rasta booms

Radio presenter Blakk Rasta has waded into recent calls for the sacking of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta by a bloc of ruling party lawmakers.

In his view, there was no point going after Ofori-Atta alone especially when the man who appointed him stresses his continuous belief in his competence.

Speaking on the October 25, 2022 edition of his show on Accra-based 3FM, the ardent government critic said Ghanaians had allowed Akufo-Addo too much leverage to be toying with governance.

“This is a very democratic country that has sat back to look at this president play with this country. I am most excited that this president has proven to the whole world that he is most incompetent, he is too old to be president and his faculties stopped working several years back, the best he could have done to us was to retire.”

He continued that whiles the group of 80 New Patriotic Party Members of Parliament want, “want the Finance Minister to leave, may I extend it to the president himself? Why do you sack a man who believes and still believes that the Finance Minister is the best?

“Why do you sack the Finance Minister and leave the man who believes in him. To send Ofori-Atta home … and leave this sleeping president to continue sleeping and playing the Don Quixote,” he quizzed.

The group said it will not do business with government nor support the 2023 Budget if the president fails to heed their call to remove Ofori-Atta and the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen.

According to them, the move follows previous concerns sent to the government that have not yielded any positive results.

“We have had occasions to defend allegations of conflicts of interest, lack of confidence, and trust against the leadership of the Finance Ministry.

“The recent development within the economy is of major concern to our caucus and our constituents. We have made our grave concern to our president through the parliamentary leadership and the leadership of the party without and positive response,” Andy Appiah Kubi said.

The MPs believe the move will change the current economic situation in the country.

“We are by this medium communicating our strong desire that the president changes the Minister of Finance and the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry without further delay in order to restore hope into the finance sector and reverse the downward trend in the growth of the economy,” he added.

  • Simeone strikes twice to heap further pressure on Rangers

Rangers’ slim hopes of playing Europa League football in the new year are all but over following a 3-0 defeat to Napoli in Naples, heaping further pressure upon Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The Scottish side needed a result and a favour from Liverpool against Ajax to retain a realistic chance of finishing third, and while Jurgen Klopp’s side did their part, Rangers were swept aside by the Serie A leaders.

Napoli took the lead after just 11 minutes, Giovanni Simeone rifling home after Giovanni Di Lorenzo teed him up, and the forward was on the scoresheet again five minutes later as he tucked home Mario Rui’s cross.

Tanguy Ndombele’s fierce strike from outside the box clattered off the bar before the break, while the second half saw Alfredo Morelos fail to connect from close range in the visitors’ best chance of the game.

Any hope of a late comeback was crushed 10 minutes from the final whistle when Leo Ostigard was left unmarked and headed home Giacomo Raspadori’s corner.

With Rangers three points behind Ajax and having lost their first meeting 4-0, Van Bronckhorst’s side need a remarkable result in Amsterdam next week to clinch third place and Europa League football.

  • Ruff N Smooth flopped because we were ungrateful to Bola Ray – Bullet reveals

Half of the award-winning Ghanaian music duo Ruff N Smooth, Ricky ‘Bullet’ Nana Agyemang, has told the ‘Ayekoo Ayekoo’ audience on Accra 100.5 FM that the music group experienced failure because of the disrespectful way in which they parted ways with their former manager, Nathan Kwabena Anokye ‘Bola Ray’ Adisi.

Bullet holds that: “There’s a spirit that deals with [ungrateful] people” and this accounts for why artistes experience failure when they “bang the door” behind them and leave their managers.

He explained he found this out the hard way and bemoaned that: “People have not really understood how this life works.”

Noting that “It happened to us: Ruff N Smooth,” he reminisced on how, despite media executive Bola Ray’s abundant help, he and his group mate, abandoned him for another manager.

“I always say that the things Bola Ray has done for me, in my life, my father and no one else has done that for me but at a point in time, we had to move on from him [and] instead of sitting with him and respectfully informing him that it was time for us to move and ask for his blessing, we did not,” he narrated.

“We had met someone else and flippantly claiming we did not have a contract with Bola, we left,” Bullet revealed and noted the dark times that almost swiftly followed their unprofessional exit.

“From that time, any song we worked on was not successful. Bola did not seek black magic against us, let’s be clear. It was not necessary for him to even do that. Nature and [principles] God has placed on the earth” were responsible, the singer and music executive stressed.

In view of this, he took a moment and admonished artistes not to be puffed up thinking they are self-made “stars,” and cautioned them to be mindful in their dealings with people who wholeheartedly help them even if it is not financially.

He also stressed on the lengths to which managers go to help artistes and said it sometimes goes beyond the contract signed.

“I may be managing you and making no money out of it,” Bullet illustrated. “You may even come to me for money to take care of your mother. That’s surely not part of the business. We do things beyond the business” so you cannot insinuate that I have done nothing for you and ask me sarcastically “that are you God?”

“Was it God who invested his money in you? He used a human being to do it and in that position, that human is your god and so when you fight that person, you are actually messing with God,” he postulated.

Mr Bullet Agyemang maintained there is no “record label boss or manager who will go somewhere and pray or chant for the downfall of an artiste when they fallout. It won’t happen because the label boss [already] knows karma is real.”

And returning to Bola Ray, he spoke about making amends.

“I once had a dream that I had gone to Bola’s place to plead for forgiveness. And on the day I actually went to see him, the suit I saw him in in the dream was the same one he was wearing. When I went there, I held his leg and said, ‘Boss, I’ve messed up. Forgive me.’ I took my uncle along to say sorry.”

Bola, accepting the apology, said in response: “Etuo [Bullet’s former name], you’re my boy,” he revealed.

Ruff (Bullet) N Smooth (Akhan) came to prominence on the back of their 2010 album ‘Swagger’ which housed hits like its title track, ‘Azingele’, ‘Martha (Sex Machine)’ and ‘Naija Baby’.

The group is not as active as it used to be. In 2018, manager Theophilus Amoah Baah denied that the group has disbanded. According to him, Bullet and Ahkan are concentrating on individual projects.

It would appear, the last time the award-winning group released music was in 2017:‘Medicine’ featuring Baafour. Before this, they had the 2016 hit ‘Shabba’.
