  • Benzema back in individual training for Real Madrid

Karim Benzema returned to individual training ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League clash with Celtic, having missed Los Blancos’ past three games.

The Ballon d’Or winner sat out league meetings with Sevilla and Girona, as well as a Champions League defeat at RB Leipzig, after suffering from muscular fatigue in his left leg.

Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti recently revealed Benzema had undergone tests that came back clear, but the Champions League holders have been unwilling to take any risks with his fitness.

Benzema limped out of Madrid’s 3-0 win at Celtic in September with a knee injury, and defending World Cup champions France will be watching on with interest as he prepares to return from his latest setback.

On Monday, a club statement revealed Benzema and Aurelien Tchouameni – who missed Sunday’s draw with Girona due to a muscle injury – had trained individually ahead of Wednesday’s match.

Benzema has missed five of Madrid’s 12 games in LaLiga this season but has found the net five times in his seven appearances in the competition.

  • France midfielder Pogba ruled out of World Cup, agent confirms

Paul Pogba will miss France’s World Cup campaign, the Juventus midfielder’s agent has confirmed.

The 29-year-old, who was a member of Didier Deschamps’ triumphant squad at Russia 2018, had been expected to figure once more for Les Bleus if fit.

But having returned to Turin from Manchester United during the close season, Pogba has struggled with a knee injury, with delayed surgery keeping him stuck on the sidelines.

Now, the player’s agent Rafaela Pimenta says he will not return to either domestic duty with Juventus, nor make the plane to Qatar with France, in what is one of the biggest injury blows ahead of the tournament.

“Following yesterday and today’s medical review in Torino and Pittsburgh, it is extremely painful to [say] Paul Pogba will still need recovery time from his surgery,” Pimenta told Telefoot on Monday.

“For this reason, Paul will not be able to join [the] Juventus squad before the World Cup break, nor the French national team in Qatar. If wishful thinking would change things, Paul would be playing tomorrow.

“But what changes things are hard work, resilience and discipline, all of which are the only things in Paul’s mind [during] these challenging times.

“Paul will continue working [and] giving his very best to be back on the pitch for the fans and his team as soon as possible.”

Less than three weeks out from the World Cup, Juventus also provided an update on the fitness of injured United States midfielder Weston McKennie.

“Weston McKennie underwent radiological examinations at J|Medical which showed muscular overload in the rectus femoris of the right thigh,” the statement read. “His condition will be evaluated daily.”

France begin their World Cup defence against Australia on November 22, before facing Denmark and Tunisia in their other two Group D matches.

  • Rebic left out of preliminary Croatia squad ahead of World Cup

Milan forward Ante Rebic has been left out of Croatia’s preliminary 34-man squad for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

Rebic was a key part of the Croatia team who reached the World Cup final in Russia in 2018, opening the scoring in an impressive 3-0 group-stage win over Argentina in that tournament.

However, the Rossoneri man has only made three Serie A starts this season, and although he has hit the net three times in his seven total league appearances, it has not been enough to enter him into Zlatko Dalic’s thoughts.

Rebic last played for his country at last year’s Euro 2020.

Luka Modric briefly sparked concerns over his fitness when he missed Real Madrid’s Champions League defeat to RB Leipzig this month, but the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner is included on the list, as are Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic and Tottenham’s Ivan Perisic.

Croatia will begin their Group F campaign against Morocco on November 23, before facing Canada and Belgium, and they will name their final 26-man squad on November 9.

Croatia preliminary squad in full: Dominik Livakovic (Dinamo Zagreb), Ivica Ivusic (Osijek), Ivo Grbic (Atletico Madrid), Dominik Kotarski (PAOK), Nediljko Labrovic (Rijeka); Domagoj Vida (AEK), Dejan Lovren (Zenit), Borna Barisic (Rangers), Duje Caleta-Car (Southampton), Josip Juranovic (Celtic), Josko Gvardiol (RB Leipzig), Borna Sosa (Stuttgart), Josip Stanisic (Bayern Munich), Marin Pongracic (Lecce), Martin Erlic (Sassuolo), Josip Sutalo (Dinamo Zagreb); Luka Modric (Real Madrid), Mateo Kovacic (Chelsea), Marcelo Brozovic (Inter), Mario Pasalic (Atalanta), Nikola Vlasic (Torino), Luka Ivanusec (Dinamo Zagreb), Lovro Majer (Rennes), Kristijan Jakic (Eintracht Frankfurt), Luka Sucic (Salzburg), Josip Misic (Dinamo Zagreb); Ivan Perisic (Tottenham), Andrej Kramaric (Hoffenheim), Josip Brekalo (Wolfsburg), Bruno Petkovic (Dinamo Zagreb), Mislav Orsic (Dinamo Zagreb), Ante Budimir (Osasuna), Marko Livaja (Hajduk Split), Antonio Colak (Rangers).

  • Bosnia postpone Russia friendly amid criticism from own players

Bosnia and Herzegovina have postponed their upcoming friendly with Russia amid widespread criticism, including from their own players.

Bosnia announced in September they would face Russia in Saint Petersburg on November 19, a day before the World Cup gets under way in Qatar.

The game would have been Russia’s first against a European side since being banned from all FIFA and UEFA competitions following the country’s invasion of Ukraine in February.

However, following complaints from Miralem Pjanic and Edin Dzeko, Bosnia’s Football Association (NFSBIH) has announced the match will no longer go ahead next month.

“The friendly between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Russia, which was supposed to be played on November 19, will not be played at that time,” Monday’s statement read.

“At today’s session of the executive board of the Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the match planned for November 19 was postponed.

“President of NFSBIH, Mr. Vico Zeljkovic, stated that the playing of this friendly match will be extended for some future date.”

Bosnia failed to reach the World Cup after finishing fourth in their qualification group, while Russia were blocked from taking part in March’s play-offs as a result of the war in Ukraine.

Russia’s only match since last November was a 2-1 friendly win against Kyrgyzstan in Bishkek in September.

  • Ukraine will appeal to FIFA to throw Iran out of 2022 Qatar World Cup

The Ukrainian Football Association will appeal to FIFA in a bid to get Iran thrown out of the Qatar World Cup.

A statement from Ukraine’s FA on Monday confirmed they want Iran to be excluded from the tournament for “possible involvement of Iran in the military aggression of Russia against Ukraine”.

Ukraine was invaded by Russia in February. The country’s football team reached the final stage of UEFA’s qualification play-offs but were beaten by Wales in June.

FIFA and UEFA subsequently banned Russia from playing international football.

The chief executive of Ukrainian Premier League side Shakhtar Donetsk, Sergei Palkin, last week urged FIFA to prevent Iran from competing in Qatar, suggesting Ukraine replace them.

A statement on the Ukrainian FA’s website referenced the fact the executive committee had decided to appeal to the world governing body, but did not mention the possibility of replacing them at the tournament.

The statement outlined that the executive had made the decision: “Taking into account media information about systematic human rights violations in Iran, which may violate the principles and norms of the FIFA Statutes, taking into account the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 regarding the imposition of sanctions on Iran and the possible involvement of Iran in the military aggression of Russia against Ukraine, to make a request to the FIFA to consider excluding the Iranian national team from the 2022 FIFA World Cup.”

Iran’s opening game of the World Cup is scheduled to take place on November 21 against England.

Meanwhile, the Bosnia and Herzegovina FA confirmed the proposed friendly with Russia on November 19 has been postponed, though the intention remains for it to be played “at a future date”.

A statement read: “The friendly match between the national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Russia, which was supposed to be played on November 19 in Saint Petersburg, will not be played at that time.

“At today’s session of the Executive Board of the Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the match planned for November 19 was postponed. President of NS/FS BiH, Mr Vico Zeljkovic, stated that the playing of this friendly match will be extended for some future date.”

  • 2022 BECE school placement starts today; check the selection criteria

The selection of schools by candidates of the 2022 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) begins today, October 31, 2022.

National Coordinator of the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), Mark Sasu Mensah, made this known in an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show.

Accoridng to him, the selection process will come to an end on November 18, 2022.

He encouraged the candidates to pay key attention to the criteria for the school placement.

Candidates with guidance and assistance from parents/guardians and school authorities must choose six schools (1st – 6th choices ) in all.

In category A, there are 86 schools, which includes Ghana Education Service (GES) schools and TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) schools. A candidate is supposed to choose one school from this category.

In category B, there are 264 schools and a candidate is supposed to select a maximum of two schools. Category C provides 562 schools. The maximum the candidate can select is five.

A candidate must choose a compulsory day as 6th choice (Catchment Area School) or choose boarding School from the list of schools

“You are supposed to select that school that is 16km or 10 miles within your catchment area. You must select that as Day school. There is also the 120 special boarding schools under the catchment area. These are low enrolment schools,” he added.

Candidates who wish to offer purely TVET Programmes must select all six TVETS.

Also, candidates must select programmes and accommodation for each selected school.

Mr Mensah entreated candidates to be careful when inputting codes of the programme they wish to study.

“If it is General Arts, put the 501 there. So you know you have chosen the correct one,” he added.

  • Klopp believes Napoli can reach Champions League final

Jurgen Klopp thinks Napoli can go all the way to the Champions League final if they can maintain their current level of performance.

The Liverpool manager has already felt the force of Luciano Spalletti’s in-form side this season, losing 4-1 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on matchday one of the Champions League group stage.

Napoli sit top of Group A with five wins from five games, and also lead Serie A by five points after beating Sassuolo 4-0 on Saturday.

When questioned at a press conference ahead of Tuesday’s return fixture at Anfield whether Napoli can reach the Champions League final, Klopp said: “I think if they can play like they play at the moment, they have a good chance to go to the final… I think Napoli is the team in form in Europe, they play really well.

“Spalletti is a very experienced coach, has worked everywhere pretty much, and it looks like all his experience and a few really good signings and good decisions, he brought a group together which works on an exceptionally high level together.”

Napoli have not lost since April, and have won a staggering 13 consecutive matches.

Liverpool have had a comparatively poor start to their season, sitting ninth in the Premier League with just four wins from 12 games.

They have fared well in the Champions League, though, winning four of their five group games to qualify along with Napoli for the last 16 with one game to go.

In order to leapfrog the Italians and top the group, Liverpool will need to win by at least four clear goals on Merseyside.

Klopp is not “scared” of facing Napoli again three days after his team were beaten 2-1 at home by Leeds United.

“When I speak about the positive aspects of Napoli at the moment it is because I am a football lover,” he said.

“I’m not afraid or scared [of playing them] it’s just a tough challenge, that’s all. I really respect what they are doing and I know Luciano respects what we have done the last few years.”

  • Akufo-Addo should be commissioning projects not cutting sod – Evans Amoo

An aspiring Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Evans Amoo, has called out President Akufo-Addo for being unable to churn out several developmental projects.

According to Mr Amoo, rather than commissioning projects, the President is engaged in cutting sod for the construction of some projects he seeks to over see while in office.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show on October 27, the NDC member questioned why the President was on a tour in the Eastern Region.

“What at all is he commissioning at the Eastern Region. When did he cut sod. He should be commissioning and  not cutting sod in an election period,” he said in the local parlance.

During his tour of the Eastern Region, President Akufo-Addo inspected the construction of the Ofoase-Ayirebi Agenda 111 Hospital Project.

He also commissioning of a 1D1F Beverage Factory, a 24-Unit Classroom Block at St. Martins SHS, as well as an accommodation complex inside the Nsawam Camp Prison all in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri constituency.

Again, he commissioned the Model STEM Senior High School and the Abomosu bridge in Atiwa West.

According to Mr Amoo, “he (Akufo-Addo has) made things so difficult in this country. There is extreme poverty.”

He bemoaned the incessant rise in prices of fuel products. A litre of petrol is being sold at about GHS14 while a litre of diesel goes for over GHS18.

  • 912 SHSs to enroll qualified 2022 BECE candidates – CSSPS

A total of 912 Senior High Schools and Technical and Vocational Institutes will be admitting qualified candidates who sat for the 2022 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) has revealed.

National Coordinator for the CSSPS, Mark Sash Mensah, explained that although 552,288 candidates sat for the exams, only those who qualified would be able to further their education at the secondary level.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show on October 28, 2022, Mr Mensah revealed that the number of schools to receive qualified students has increased by 39.

“Last three years, students were placed into 726 schools. Last year, 873 schools,” he said.

Meanwhile, the National Coordinator has revealed that there are challenges with the school placement.

“More schools but there are problems. The selection of the schools is cued towards a particular school so there are challenges. Last year, about 3000 candidates who had aggregate 9 to 15, could not get access to any of their first choice,” he admitted.

However, Mr Mensah indicated that a Cluster based system and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) schools have been introduced to solve this.

The cluster-based system is an update on the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).

Under the cluster-based system, candidates are required to select six schools as usual “which comprises of both Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET)and Ghana Education Service (GES) schools.”

According to him, after selecting the five schools from categories A, B, and C, the candidate is also required to select a compulsory day school in their catchment area under category D.

  • AU urges immediate ceasefire amid DR Congo fighting

The African Union has called for an immediate cessation of fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo where rebels have been advancing towards a provincial capital in the east of the country.

DR Congo has expelled the Rwandan ambassador, accusing Kigali of supporting the M23 rebels who are now threatening the city of Goma.

It follows the take-over by the rebels of a key transit town in the east of the country.

Rwanda has repeatedly denied the allegation that it supports the rebels.

The town of Kiwandja fell to rebel hands on Saturday, potentially cutting off the regional capital, Goma, from the north of mineral-rich North Kivu province.

The AU has urged all the parties to engage in a constructive dialogue and is calling them to peace talks in Kenya next month.

A UN peacekeeping force in the region has placed its troops on high alert.

  • Torino 2-1 AC Milan: Below-par Rossoneri lose ground in Serie A

AC Milan failed to move back within three points of Serie A leaders Napoli as goals from Koffi Djidji and Aleksey Miranchuk condemned the Rossoneri to a surprise 2-1 loss to Torino.

Miranchuk followed up Djidji’s glancing header with a cultured left-footed finish as Torino scored twice in two frantic first-half minutes to stun Milan at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino.

Stefano Pioli’s men travelled to Turin looking to stay within touching distance of the Serie A summit, but were uncharacteristically lethargic for long periods on Sunday.

Junior Messias was gifted a goal following a bizarre mix-up at the back, but Milan failed to build on that strike late on as Torino clung on for a huge win.

Rafael Leao missed two golden chances in the first six minutes, sending a wild volley over after breaking in behind before mishitting his shot after being teed up by Brahim Diaz.

Torino punished Milan for their wastefulness 10 minutes before the break, as Djidji nodded Valentino Lazaro’s deep free-kick in off the right-hand post.

Things quickly went from bad to worse for the champions as Miranchuk latched onto Nikola Vlasic’s knock-down before shifting the ball onto his left foot and finishing coolly across Ciprian Tatarusanu.

Sergino Dest fired over from range as Milan attempted to lift the tempo after the break, before Messias ensured a tense finish when he curled home following a clash between Vanja Milinkovic-Savic and Perr Schuurs.

Torino boss Ivan Juric was dismissed for berating referee Rosario Abisso following that goal, but his team showed greater composure to see out the closing stages in relative comfort.

What does it mean? Rossoneri fall short

Although the likes of Napoli and Atalanta have made headlines in Serie A by emerging as surprise pacesetters, Milan had begun their title defence in solid fashion, stretching their unbeaten away run to 17 league games ahead of Sunday’s contest (W12 D5).

Milan had also kept five consecutive clean sheets in league meetings with Torino prior to this game, but they saw both of those records fall by the wayside after a quickfire double from their hosts, who richly deserved the win following a disciplined performance.

    Djidji ends barren run

To say Torino have struggled against Milan in recent meetings would be an understatement: Djidji’s opener ended a 499-minute run in which Torino had failed to find the net against Milan in Serie A meetings.

Their previous goal against the Rossoneri in the competition was scored by Andrea Belotti in September 2019, and prior to Sunday’s game, no player in Torino’s current squad had scored a league goal against Milan.

    Leao kept quiet

Leao has emerged as the most obvious goal threat in an exciting Milan team, having recorded nine league goal contributions (five goals, four assists) ahead of the trip to Turin.

However, the Portugal attacker was hauled off at the break after a disappointing first half in which he squandered chances amounting to 0.51 expected goals (xG) and failed to hit the target with any of his four attempts.

    Key Opta facts

    – Torino scored as many first-half goals in this match as they had scored in their previous seven full Serie A home games (two).
    – Junior Messias has been involved in three goals in his last four Serie A games, after failing to record a goal contribution in the first five games of the Serie A season.
    – After assisting against Udinese last time out, Aleksey Miranchuk has been involved in a goal in consecutive Serie A appearances for the second time (after two consecutive goals between April and May 2021 with Atalanta).
    – Koffi Djidji’s goal was his first in Serie A since April 10, 2021, when he was playing for Crotone. It was also Torino’s first from a set-piece situation in the competition this season.

    What’s next?

Milan host Salzburg in the Champions League on Wednesday, needing to avoid defeat to reach the last 16. Torino, meanwhile, go to Bologna in Serie A next Sunday.

  • Fally Ipupa offers condolences after tragic concert

Congolese singer Fally Ipupa has sent his condolences to the families of 11 people who died on Saturday during his concert in the largest stadium in the capital, Kinshasa.

The stadium was packed beyond its 80,000 capacity – even the corridors were jammed, according to one witness.

Reports said the size of the crowd vastly exceeded the number that the security personnel could control.

Two police officers were among those killed.

The country’s interior minister, Daniel Aselo Okito, has called for the organisers to be punished for failing to limit the number attending the concert.

In a Facebook message, Fally Ipupa said there was “strict compliance with safety” procedures at the concert.

He added: “I am deeply disturbed and my deepest condolences to all the families. May God in his deepest mercy comfort the bereaved hearts.”

  • Arsenal 5-0 Nottingham Forest: Nelson back as Gunners flex muscles

Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League in style as forgotten man Reiss Nelson came off the bench for the injured Bukayo Saka to score a brace in a 5-0 win against Nottingham Forest.

England forward Saka seemed to take a knock in the opening minute but still teed up Gabriel Martinelli to break the deadlock, later limping off to be replaced by Nelson, who scored twice in three minutes before assisting Thomas Partey as captain Martin Odegaard wrapped up the win.

Nelson had not scored a Premier League goal in 837 days since getting on the scoresheet in a win over Liverpool, but it was an impact that settled the home crowd after Arsenal had earlier failed to build on a strong start.

After losing to PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League on Thursday night, Mikel Arteta somewhat surprisingly reverted back to the starting XI that was held to a 1-1 draw at Southampton a week ago.

Some of his players seemed to tire in that game, but here they put to the sword a Forest side showing just one change from their shock 1-0 win over Liverpool.

Arsenal made the most of a lively opening as Martinelli stooped to head in a pinpoint Saka cross after five minutes.

The Arsenal players celebrated by holding up a shirt with Pablo Mari’s name and number on the back after the defender — currently on loan at Monza — was stabbed in a Milan supermarket last week.

Arsenal were well on top and came so close to a second, only for Renan Lodi to clear Martinelli’s effort off the line.

But the Gunners were not having everything their own way. Saka had taken a knock early on and having tried to play on, was forced off before the half-hour mark as Nelson replaced him.

The change seemed to give Forest fresh impetus as they enjoyed a couple of rare forays into the Arsenal half and almost levelled as Gabriel Magalhaes gifted possession to Jesse Lingard, whose shot was bravely blocked.

The game changed after the break, with Nelson taking centre-stage on his first Premier League appearance since the opening-day defeat at Brentford last season.

He doubled the lead with a finish high into Dean Henderson’s net after the England goalkeeper had done well to keep out Nelson’s initial effort.

The points were secured just three minutes later. Nelson scored again as he turned home Gabriel Jesus’ cross before laying a pass into the path of Partey, who finished superbly from outside the box to make it four.

Arteta took his opportunity to rest a number of other key personnel as William Saliba, Granit Xhaka and Martinelli were all replaced before Odegaard latched onto a Jesus pass to score the fifth.

That proved to be the last of the goals, with Arteta probably as happy at keeping a first home Premier League clean sheet since March as he was at the clinical display at the other end of the pitch.

  • Ramaphosa should step aside over scandal – Tourism Minister

South Africa’s tourism minister says President Cyril Ramaphosa should step aside in line with the ruling party’s rule about members linked to corruption scandals.

President Ramaphosa is embroiled in an corruption scandal dubbed “farmgate”. It is about an alleged cover-up of a robbery that took place at his private farm, Phala Phala, back in February 2020.

    The president denies any wrongdoing.

In an interview aired on Sunday night by the public broadcaster SABC, Lindiwe Sisulu said she intended to put the scandal on the agenda of the ANC conference in December.

She said there needed to be a discussion about President Ramaphosa’s fate and the application of the step-aside rule.

Quote Message: I would propose as we go into the next conference [that] anybody who we feel has serious allegations against them should step aside. For instance, the Phala Phala issue for me would call for that until all of us are quite certain that there is nothing wrong, nothing illegal about that.”

The ANC is set to pick its presidential candidate for the 2024 election and Mr Ramaphosa is under increasing scrutiny.

  • Kagame speaks to UN boss over DR Congo crisis

Rwanda’s president has said he’s had a “good discussion” with the UN secretary general about de-escalating the situation in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Conflict has been raging in the region for months between the DR Congo’s army and the M23 rebels who seized two more towns over the weekend.

The situation has prompted the DR Congo government to expel Rwanda’s ambassador to Kinshasa, a decision Rwanda has noted “with regret”.

In a tweet posted on Monday, President Paul Kagame wrote that the “ways and means to de-escalate and address the issues to a peaceful end are with us … We just have to commit ourselves to applying them”.

The African Union has expressed its “extreme concern” at the deteriorating security situation and called for called for an immediate cessation of fighting.

Kinshasa has repeatedly accused Rwanda of supporting M23, an accusation Kigali has always denied.

Different initiatives by the Angolan president and the East African Community – which both countries belong to – have been unable to stop the violence and resolve the decades-long conflict.

  • Buhari summons security chiefs amid terror alerts

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has summoned heads of security agencies for a meeting on Monday in the capital, Abuja, following terror alerts issued recently by several Western countries.

In a statement, the presidency said the meeting was aimed at reviewing and strengthening the security network across the country.

Last week the UK and US had warned that Islamist militants were likely to target government facilities, places of worship and schools in Abuja and its environs.

The US went further to approve the evacuation of its citizens and non- essential staff. The alerts sparked public anxiety and tension across the country.

Meanwhile reports say a top leader of one jihadist group, Iswap, has been arrested and some militants killed as they attempted to free some of their detained leaders being held at a camp in central Niger state.

The militants were reportedly killed by Nigerian troops after they ran into military ambush in New Bussa, Niger state.

  • Infant among eight killed in Liberia canoe tragedy

At least eight people, including a mother and her two-month-old baby, died after a canoe capsized in a river in Liberia’s north-eastern Nimba county over the weekend.

Seven of the bodies were retrieved from the Yari River and hastily buried near the river, local authorities told the BBC.

Rescue workers on Monday said they were not hopeful of recovering the infant’s body.

The local district commissioner, Jefferson Saye Gondah, said the possibility of finding the baby’s body was “slim”.

The dead were among 18 persons returning from their farms in a dug-out canoe that capsized in the middle of the river. Ten people managed to swim to the shore.

The local town, Zahnboi, has remained tense, with grief-stricken people from nearby and distant towns coming in to help with search and rescue efforts and consoling the bereaved.

Paramount Chief Isaac Kolleh told the BBC that the situation was confused.

Liberia has had bad roads and poor infrastructure since the country’s bloody wars ended nearly 20 years ago. Corruption and bad governance have been blamed for the lack of resources for critical interventions.

  • IMF engagement at an advanced level – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said that the government’s negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has neared a concluding stage.

In his first address to the nation on October 30, amidst the troubling economic turmoil the country is currently facing, the president expressed confidence in the economic recovery programme.

He mentioned that “I am able to report to you, my fellow Ghanaians, that the negotiations to secure a strong IMF Programme, which will support the implementation of our Post COVID-19 Programme for Economic Growth and additional funding to support the 2023 Budget and development programme, are at advanced stages, and are going well”.

This comes in contradiction to allegations that the government is struggling to secure a deal with the IMF.

It was said that the economic management team had provided the Fund with inaccurate figures, hence the delay from the IMF.

The President refuted such claims, adding that “We are determined to secure these arrangements quickly to bring back confidence and relief to Ghanaians”.

Stating some benefits of the IMF engagement, he mentioned that the cedi would see an appreciation .

“We are working towards reaching a deal with the IMF by the end of the year. This will give further credence to the measures Government is taking to stabilize and grow the economy, as well as shore up our currency.”

The local currency has been struggling to perform against major world trading currencies.

ADDRESS TO THE NATION BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC,
    NANA ADDO DANKWA AKUFO-ADDO,
ON THE ECONOMY, ON SUNDAY, 30TH OCTOBER 2022.

    Fellow Ghanaians, good evening.

Back in 2020, at the outbreak of the Corona virus pandemic, I started a regular conversation with you that came to be popularly known as Fellow Ghanaians.

It was a time of great fear of the unknown, and the entire world felt at risk. I came into your homes regularly to tell you what the experts were discovering about the virus, and what we should do.

Now that we have seen the worst of the COVID-19, I can tell you that there were moments during those times when I was distraught, there were moments when I was in despair about the apparent inadequacy of our health facilities, and there were moments when I wondered if the dire predictions made about dead bodies on our streets would truly happen.

But I knew that I owed it to all of us that, as your president, I had to hold my nerve, show leadership and take us out of the crisis. With your help and support, and the great mercies of the Almighty, we can say that we emerged from the ravages of the pandemic with one of the lowest mortality rates globally. In fact, Ghana’s handling of the pandemic won universal acclaim.

We could all see in real time the devastation that was being wreaked on economies during the pandemic, but I doubt that anyone imagined the extent of the damage. Our economy, here in Ghana, like many, many others around the globe, was thrown into turmoil.

When I said, at the height of the COVID pandemic, that we knew what to do to bring the economy back to life, but not how to bring people back to life, it was not said in jest. We had done it before, and we were on course to doing it again. Ghana’s economy grew by a remarkable 5.4% in 2021, signifying a strong recovery from the 0.5% growth recorded the previous year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, in the last quarter of 2021, our economy grew at seven percent (7%), only for the Russian invasion of Ukraine in the first quarter of this year to aggravate the effects of COVID-19, and plunge the global economy into even greater turmoil from which it has not yet recovered.

The whole world has been taken aback by the speed with which inflation has eaten away people’s incomes. Economies, big and small, have experienced, over this year alone, the highest rise in cost of living over a generation; the highest rise in government borrowing in over fifty (50) years; the highest rise in inflation for forty (40) years; the steepest depreciation in their currencies to the US dollar over the last thirty (30) years; the fastest peak in interest rates for over twenty (20) years; and the greatest threat of unemployment in peace time; with over a hundred million people being pushed into extreme poverty.

Between the end of 2019 and now, inflation in Ghana has increased by five-fold, in Togo by sixteen-fold, by eleven-fold in Senegal, and by seven-fold in Cote d’Ivoire. In truth, however, the fact that there are petrol queues in France does not make it more tolerable that the trotro price from Kasoa to Circle has doubled in the past one year, nor does it make it any more tolerable that the price of cooking oil goes up every other week.

It is important to state that mentioning the increases in prices worldwide is not meant to belittle the scope of suffering here, but simply to help us put things into some perspective, and, hopefully, learn some useful lessons about how other people are coping.

Fellow Ghanaians, this is why I am back in your homes this evening to ask for your support, as we work together to get our economy back into good shape.

In April, after the Cabinet retreat of the first quarter, and recognising the deteriorating macroeconomy, my government announced a thirty percent (30%) cut in budgetted discretionary expenditures, and a thirty percent (30%) cut in salaries of the President, Vice President, Ministers, Deputy Ministers, MMDCEs and political office holders, amongst other measures.

And, since July, when the Government took the difficult decision to go to the IMF to seek support, I have been speaking publicly at different fora on the subject of the economic difficulties we face, especially during my recent tours, so far, of nine (9) regions, and interacting directly with you, the Ghanaian people. It is also true that many of you have felt the need for me to come back to the Fellow Ghanaians format, that brings us all together.

For us, in Ghana, our reality is that our economy is in great difficulty. The budget drawn for the 2022 fiscal year has been thrown out of gear, disrupting our balance of payments and debt sustainability, and further exposing the structural weaknesses of our economy.

We are in a crisis, I do not exaggerate when I say so. I cannot find an example in history when so many malevolent forces have come together at the same time. But, as we have shown in other circumstances, we shall turn this crisis into an opportunity to resolve not just the short-term, urgent problems, but the long-term structural problems that have bedeviled our economy.

I urge us all to see the decision to go to the International Monetary Fund in this light. We have gone to the Fund to repair, in the short term, our public finances, and restore our balance of payments, whilst we continue to work on the medium to long-term structural changes that are at the heart of our goal of constructing a resilient, robust Ghanaian economy, and building a Ghana Beyond Aid.

I am able to report to you, my fellow Ghanaians, that the negotiations to secure a strong IMF Programme, which will support the implementation of our Post COVID-19 Programme for Economic Growth and additional funding to support the 2023 Budget and development programme, are at advanced stages, and are going well.

We are determined to secure these arrangements quickly to bring back confidence and relief to Ghanaians. We are working towards reaching a deal with the IMF by the end of the year. This will give further credence to the measures Government is taking to stabilize and grow the economy, as well as shore up our currency.

I know that the increasing cost of living is the number one concern for all of us. It is driven by fast escalating fuel prices at the pumps, which is caused by high crude oil prices on the world market and our depreciated currency. I know that this is putting intolerable pressure on families and businesses. I know that people are being driven to make choices they should not have to make, and I know that it has led to the devaluation of capital of traders and painfully accumulated savings. Furthermore, Government is working to secure reliable and regular sources of affordable petroleum products for the Ghanaian market. It is expected that this arrangement, when successful, coupled with a stable currency will halt the escalation of fuel prices and bring relief to us all.

I hear from the market queens also that another factor fueling the high prices is the high margins that some traders are slapping on goods, for fear of future higher costs. I say to our traders, we are all in this together. Please let us be measured in the margins we seek. I have great respect and admiration for the ingenuity and hard work of our traders, especially those that take on the distribution of foodstuffs around the country, and I would hesitate to join in calling them names. I do make a heartfelt appeal that we all keep an eye out for the greater good, and not try to make the utmost profits out of the current difficulties.

In language that every market woman and, indeed, every trader in our country understands, let me say that the basic problem we face is that we are not making as much money as we need to spend, and what little money we do make is going to pay for the debts we have contracted to fund the development projects we must have. Not enough of us are paying our taxes, not enough of us are producing to generate the revenues that we need.

Nevertheless, my ambitions for Ghana remain high. All our children should be educated and trained with skills that will enable us be competitive in the world. We need to close rapidly the infrastructure gap, we need to build a world-class healthcare system, and we need to build confidence in ourselves to make ours the happy and prosperous place it deserves to be.

I believe we can and we will find the means to achieve these goals, even if the immediate measures we have to take are painful.

At the just ended Cabinet Retreat at Peduase Lodge, my government agreed on the framework for the Post COVID-19 Programme for Economic Growth and the IMF support for its implementation, as well as the work being done by the Ministry of Finance in preparation for the 2023 budget. At the Cabinet Retreat, we took some firm decisions that should put us on the path that will take our nation out of the current economic difficulties. Let me try and give you an outline of the main decisions without getting into the technical language that baffles many of us.

To restore and sustain debt sustainability, we plan to reduce our total public debt to GDP ratio to some fifty-five percent (55%) in present value terms by 2028, with the servicing of our external debt pegged at not more than eighteen percent (18%) of our annual revenue also by 2028.

We are committed to improving the revenue collection effort, from the current tax-revenue to GDP ratio of thirteen (13%) to between eighteen and twenty percent (18-20%), to be competitive with our peers in the West Africa Region. The GRA is rolling out an extensive set of measures to support this enhanced revenue mobilisation. All of us must do our patriotic duty, and support the GRA in this exercise.

We are aiming to restore and sustain macroeconomic stability within the next three (3) to six (6) years, with a focus on ensuring debt sustainability to promote durable and inclusive growth while protecting the poor.

We have decided to review the reforms in the energy sector, capping of statutory funds, implementation of the exemptions Act and a new property rate regime. We have decided also to continue with the policy of thirty percent (30%) cut in the salaries of political office holders including the President, Vice President, Ministers, Deputy Ministers, MMDCEs, and SOE appointees in 2023, just as we will continue with the thirty percent (30%) cut in discretionary expenditures of Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

My fellow Ghanaians, the success of our efforts at diversifying the structure of the Ghanaian economy from an import-based one to a value-added exporting one is what will, in the long term, help strengthen our economy. We are making some progress with the 1D1F but our current situation requires that we take some more stringent measures to discourage the importation of goods that we can and do produce here.

To this end, we will review the standards required for imports into the country, prioritise the imports, as well as review the management of our foreign exchange reserves, in relation to imports of products such as rice, poultry, vegetable oil, tooth picks, pasta, fruit juice, bottled water and ceramic tiles, and others which, with intensified government support and that of the banking sector, can be manufactured and produced in sufficient quantities in Ghana. Government will, in May 2023, that is six (6) months from now, review the situation. We must, as a matter of urgent national security, reduce our dependence on imported goods, and enhance our self-reliance, as demanded by our overarching goal of creating a Ghana Beyond Aid.

Much as we believe in free trade, we must work to ensure that the majority of goods in our shops and market places are those we produce and grow here in Ghana. That is why we have to support our farmers and domestic industries, including those created under the 1-District-1-Factory initiative, to help reduce our dependence on imports, and allow us the opportunity to export more and more of our products, and guarantee a stable currency that will present a high level of predictability for citizens and the business community. Exports, not imports, must be our mantra! Accra, after all, hosts the headquarters of the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Fellow Ghanaians, as the French would say, l’argent n’aime pas le bruit, to wit, money does not like noise, sika mpɛ dede. Where there is chaos, where there is noise, where there is unrest, you will not find money. If you talk down your money, it will go down. If you allow some unidentifiable person to talk down your money, it will go down.

The recent turbulence on the financial markets was caused by low inflows of foreign exchange, and was made worse in the last two to three weeks, in particular, by the activities of speculators and the Black Market. An anonymous two-minute audio message on a WhatsApp platform predicting a so-called haircut on Government bonds sent all of us into banks and forex bureaus to dump our cedis, and, before we knew it, the cedi had depreciated further. All of us can play a part in helping to strengthen the cedi by having confidence in the currency, and avoiding speculation. Let us keep our cedi as the good store of value it is. To those who make it a habit of publishing falsehoods, which result in panic in the system, I say to them that the relevant state agencies will act against such persons.

Indeed, some steps have been taken to restore order in the forex markets and we are already beginning to see some calm returning. We will not relent until order is completely restored. The following actions have been taken thus far:

    1) enhanced supervisory action by the Bank of Ghana in the forex bureau markets and the black market to flush out illegal operators, as well as ensuring that those permitted to operate legally abide by the market rules. Already some forex bureaus have had their licenses revoked, and this exercise will continue until complete order is restored in the sector;

    2) Fresh inflows of dollars are providing liquidity to the foreign exchange market, and addressing the pipeline demand;

    3) the Bank of Ghana has given its full commitment to the commercial banks to provide liquidity to ensure the wheels of the economy continue to run in a stabilized manner, till the IMF Programme kicks in and the financing assurances expected from other partners also come in;

    4) Government is working with the Bank of Ghana and the oil producing and mining companies to introduce a new legal and regulatory framework to ensure that all foreign exchange earned from operations in Ghana are, initially, paid to banks domiciled in Ghana to help boost the domestic foreign exchange market; and

    5) the Bank of Ghana will enhance its gold purchase programme.

I am confident that these immediate measures designed to change the structure of our balance of payment flows, sanitise the foreign exchange market to ensure that the banks and forex bureaus operate along international best practices, together with strengthened supervision, will go a long way to sanitize our foreign exchange market, and make it more resilient against external vulnerabilities going forward.

Over the course of this week, I have held several fruitful engagements with the Trades Union Congress and Organised Labour, the Ghana Employers’ Association, the Association of Ghana Industries, the Ghana Association of Banks, the Private Enterprise Federation, the Association of Forex Bureau Operators, the Association of Market Queens and Women, all of whom represent important stakeholders of the Ghanaian economy. They expressed their concerns and proposed solutions on how best to solve our problems. I have been encouraged by the enthusiasm of these interest groups to help Government address these challenges, and I intend to continue these engagements with other groups.

I also want to assure all Ghanaians that no individual or institutional investor, including pension funds, in Government treasury bills or instruments will lose their money, as a result of our ongoing IMF negotiations. There will be no “haircuts”, so I urge all of you to ignore the false rumours, just as, in the banking sector clean-up, Government ensured that the 4.6 million depositors affected by the exercise did not lose their deposits.

My government has always been cognisant of the importance of implementing policies and social interventions to relieve Ghanaians of hardships. It is for this reason that over the first five (5) years in office government reduced electricity tariffs cumulatively by 10.9%, we provided free water and electricity as well as reduced tariffs for the entire population during a whole year of the COVID-19 pandemic; we increased the share of the District Assemblies Common Fund to persons with disabilities by 50%; we exempted Kayayei from market tolls; we expanded the LEAP by one hundred and fifty thousand (150,000) beneficiaries; we expanded School Feeding from 1.6 million children to 2.1 million children; we restored teacher and nursing training allowances; we absorbed the cost of BECE and WASSCE exam registrations for parents; no guarantor is now required to obtain student loans. The Ghanacard is sufficient; and we have implemented free TVET as well as free senior high school education.

It is obvious, fellow Ghanaians, that you have a government that cares. We are determined to restore stability to the economy, and provide relief. We are all in this together, and I am asking for your support to rescue Ghana from the throes of this economic crisis.

I have total confidence in our ability to work our way out of our current difficulties. We are not afraid of hard work. We will triumph, as we have triumphed many times before. Let us unite, and rally around our Republic, its institutions and its democratic values, and insist that, under God, we will emerge victorious from our current difficulties. For this too shall pass, as the Battle is the Lord’s.

I will be coming regularly to keep you updated about the measures your government is making to move our country forward, and tackle our economic challenges.

God bless us all and our homeland Ghana, and make her great and strong.

I thank you for your attention, and have a good evening.

  • LIVESTREAMING: Akufo-Addo addresses Ghanaians on state of the economy

President Akufo-Addo is formally addressing the Ghanaian citizenry on the true state of the economy, which is reported to be in tatters.

He is expected to further elaborate the current challenges, causative agents and what is being done to resolve the challenges.

Ghanaians have been hit with increased prices in fuel products and transport fares as the cedi finds its feet among world trading currencies.

Due to the many issues, some Ghanaians have called for the sacking of Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, who is mandated to oversee to the smooth running of the economy. President Akufo-Addo is however yet to give into the demands.

It is expected that he will provide further justification as to why Mr Ofori-Atta remains at post.

  • Be willing to break a new mold of opportunities – Stanbic CEO tells graduates

The Chief Executive Officer of Stanbic Bank Ghana Ltd, Kwamina Asomaning, has urged graduates to be open-minded about opportunities available in the world of work due to the current turbulence the world is experiencing.

He said the country’s current condition may unsettle the graduates but asked them to be emboldened and create opportunities out of the adversities to benefit society, adding that the current situation is an opportune time also for graduates to venture into entrepreneurship with the ideas they have.

Mr. Asomaning made the remarks at the 21st Graduation and 32nd Matriculation ceremony of the Catholic University of Ghana (CUG), Fiapre – Sunyani, as the guest speaker on Saturday, October 29, 2022.

Be willing to break a new mold of opportunities - Stanbic CEO tells graduates

He said, “This may be the best time to experiment with the many thoughts running through your mind. Be willing to break a new mold of opportunities and ideas. This is important because the world has redefined work as no longer a place you go, but rather a thing you do”.

“This paradigm shift increases the opportunities to pursue entrepreneurial dreams across many fields. The ongoing revolution is creating opportunities for human interactions, and new business models and reshaping the way firms compete with one another”, he continued.

He reminded them of the opportunities that exist in the digital space that could help them gain proficiency in highly sought-after disciplines in areas such as coding, web and app design, data science, and artificial intelligence.

  • Child marriage in Ghana worrying; empower girls to realise their potentials – UNFPA

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has expressed worry about the increasing cases of child marriage and teenage pregnancy in Ghana since 2014.

The UNFPA has therefore called for more measures to enable girls to reach their full potential.

Quoting figures from the Ghana Statistical Service, the Head of Gender Unit at the UNFPA, Dr. Doris Mawuse Aglobitse, says child marriage has increased from 14.1 percent in 2014 to 14.4 percent in 2017.

“Today, almost 80,000 girls in Ghana aged between 12 and 17 are already married or living with a man,” she said.

Dr. Aglobitse was addressing residents of Ayeduase in the Oforikrom Municipality of the Ashanti Region as they celebrated this year’s International Day of the Girl Child.

She said Ghanaians need to work together towards changing the narrative.

She cited COVID-19 pandemic, conflict and climate change as aggravating threats against girls over the years and therefore renewed commitments must be taken to end child marriage.

“We know that the Covid-19 Pandemic, conflict and Climate change are increasing the threats girls face,” she noted.

Before the pandemic, according to her, 100 million girls were projected to be at risk of child marriage over the next 10 years. But pandemic-related poverty and education disrupt have added 10 million more girls.

She believed child marriage will reduce by 66% if all girls completed their education.

Dr. Aglobitse also advocated for girls to be given quality education devoid of harmful gender norms and stereotypes.

Regional Director of the Ministry of Gender Children and Social Protection, Farida Ahmed indicated girls’ empowerment as crucial element to the development of every nation.

She revealed that the Gender Ministry is working assiduously in partnership with other stakeholders to develop policies towards empowering girls to realize their full potential.

Madam Ahmed calls for a collective effort from various sectors to accelerate progress on gender equality in the country by ensuring that women participate in effective decision-making.

Queen mother of Ayeduase, Nana Yaa Saah also believes girls must be enlightened to prevent themselves from unwanted pregnancies and STIs in order to achieve their dreams.

She said if a girl child is educated, almost half of the population is literate and that will undoubtedly inure to the success of the country.

Nana Saah also notes that failure to address the needs and aspirations of girls will lead to unsustainable development and retardation.

The event which was on the theme “Our Time is Now- Our rights, Our Future” was held in collaboration with the Obaapa Development Foundation.

  • Classy Casemiro is commanding midfield in Manchester

Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils revolution is up and running — and Casemiro is the glue holding it together.

The Brazilian star joined Manchester United from Real Madrid for £70million in August, as part of a £200m spending spree at Old Trafford.

And he is proving to be worth every penny after a series of sensational displays at the heart of midfield.

Ahead of United’s clash with West Ham this afternoon, we take a look at how Casemiro is helping to transform his new club’s fortunes.

    Winning mentality

Casemiro arrived in Manchester with plenty of pedigree, having won a remarkable 16 trophies across eight seasons in Madrid.

That haul included three LaLiga titles and four Champions League triumphs and now the 30-year-old is bringing that winning mentality to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are unbeaten in the four Premier League matches that Casemiro has started — as well as winning three out of the four Europa League games where he has featured for over an hour.

    Problem solving

Manchester United’s midfield has been their Achilles’ heel for a number of seasons — but Casemiro is bringing balance to their engine room.

The Sao Paulo native has the defensive attributes to free his central team-mates from their shackles, allowing Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen or Fred to support attacks more effectively.

That was particularly evident in the 2-0 victory over Tottenham earlier this month, when Fred was transformed by the freedom that Casemiro’s presence afforded him as he chipped in with a goal and an assist.

United’s No18 is also assured with the ball at his feet, which is helping the Red Devils dominate possession more effectively than in previous campaigns.

Casemiro's impressive ball-winning ability has been on display since his arrival at Old Trafford

    Growing in importance

Ten Hag is understandably delighted with Casemiro’s performances in recent weeks.

Reflecting on the 64-cap international’s stoppage-time equaliser in last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea, he said: “That is why we brought him in, we know he’s capable of doing that.

“He proved it in Spain, in the Champions League, at the highest level. So he could also do it in the Premier League.

“He needed a short period to adapt to that, and now from game to game you see him growing, and how important he is for our game.

“He offers composure, organisation — and also when he scores a goal as well, then you bring a lot to a team.”

    Crunching the numbers

Casemiro’s underlying numbers reflect the impact that he is having at Old Trafford.

No player in the Premier League has made more tackles per 90 minutes than his 5.13 this season, while he is inside the division’s top 20 performers for both interceptions (1.85) and possession regains in the middle third (4.1) per 90.

The anchorman is also a significant aerial presence — registering a commendable 1.85 headed clearances per 90.

Meanwhile, an average of 82 touches per match reflects Casemiro’s desire to get involved in play and influence the game.

    Added quality

Manchester United have enjoyed a significant upturn in fortunes since their early season woes — and former Red Devils midfielder Paul Scholes believes that Casemiro is the driving force behind that improvement.

He said: “You can see that the stats speak for themselves, the quality that he [Casemiro] has brought to this team.

“When you look at the Real Madrid team, you always seem to think of [Luka] Modric and [Toni] Kroos and their quality, but this fella probably got overlooked in that. I think we are now seeing the real quality.

“I didn’t expect him to be as good on the ball, but, obviously, he is. We have seen that again and he links the play just as well as Eriksen does, really, with his forward passing and one-touch passing.

“I’m not sure he is going to be scoring loads of goals, but that’s not what he is in the team for. I think the real step-up in quality from what we saw at the start of the season to what we’re seeing now has made this team a lot better.”

New boss Ten Hag will be hoping that his strong run of form continues against the Hammers later.

  • Akufo-Addo speaks on state of the economy tonight

President Akufo-Addo will address Ghanaians on the current state of the economy tonight at 8PM.

This comes after scores of Ghanaians called on the president and his economic management team to update the country on the way forward in restoring the dwindling economy.

According to a pressure group, OccupyGhana, the country’s economic outlook is nothing to write home about.

They believe that the country’s leadership is in limbo due to soaring inflation and the free fall of the local currency as the country faces a cost-of-living crisis.

Thus, an update from the presidency on the state of the economy and the general affairs of the country could calm some nerves.

In a press statement, the group said, “no one expects the President to physically halt the fall of the cedi or conjure inflation away. However, it is imperative in such times that Ghanaians get the reassurance that their elected leader is doing all he can and that he cares. The cedi is ‘burning’. The Ghanaian economy is in tatters. It is a disaster. Yet we do not see commanding leadership in this matter.”

The country’s local currency is being battered by other foreign currencies while the annual inflation as of September 2022 has increased to 37.2%. A dollar is currently trading at about GH14.

Also, fuel prices have escalated, and transport fares have been revised three times just this year.

This increase in fuel prices and transport fares has translated into an increase in the prices of food goods and services.

Some Ghanaians and lawmakers have urged President Akufo-Addo to dismiss Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta because of his poor performance in the midst of this economic crisis.

The President is expected to further address the calls for the dismissal of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as well as the country’s engagement with the International Monetary Fund, on Sunday.

  • Transport fare increment successful; drivers complying – GPRTU

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) says the first day of the implementation of a hike in fares has been successful.

The GPRTU announced the increment in fares of about 19 percent earlier in the week which took effect yesterday, Saturday.

The move, according to the union was necessitated by the continuous soaring of prices of petroleum products at the various fuel pumps.

Currently, diesel and petrol are selling for over GH¢19 and GH¢15 respectively at major fuel pumps; a situation transport operators say was eroding their profit.

Abass Imoro, Industrial Relations Officer of the union said the compliance level with the increment has been commendable.

“The law-abiding drivers are complying with the 19 percent increment in fares. Until we finish the negotiations, I think we should be law-abiding and take it easy until we all finalize on that.”

VIP JEOUN increased its fares by 20% on Monday, October 24.

The fare from Accra- Kumasi which used to be GH¢85 is now GH¢100, while Accra-Sunyani will now cost GH¢130 cedis.

Also, people moving from Accra to Tamale are now paying GH¢240 for VIP buses.

  • Absa Bank-MEST Hackathon focuses on fintech and banking industry solutions

Absa Bank and Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) have delivered a transformational Hackathon event that focused on finding solutions to challenges in the fintech and banking space.

The three-day residential event formed part of a partnership between the two companies to support startup business enterprises in Ghana with skills training and insights into digital technology.

The goal is to unlock new opportunities by co-creating and producing the next generation of innovative entrepreneurs in Ghana and on the continent.

A total of 20 teams with five participants each (comprising thinkers, innovators and designers) huddled together to deliver innovative products and services to meet the needs of Absa customers.

Absa Bank-MEST Hackathon focuses on fintech and banking industry solutions

The digital transformation team at Absa Bank selected key topics around funding for SME businesses, environmental and sustainable solutions in banking; financial services to the mass market and value chain banking in the agribusiness sector.

These topics were presented to the participating teams to choose the most suitable and work to provide appropriate solutions.

The winning team, Team Insyt, which bagged a cash prize of ¢50,000, developed a solution to support banks in making better data-driven credit decisions.

Their rationale was underlined by the fact that more than 80% of loan applications get rejected because traditional banks lack sufficient data to make better credit decisions.

Commenting on the competition, the Director of Business Banking at Absa Bank, Grace Anim-Yeboah said: “This is what we mean by bringing possibilities to life. The relentless innovation displayed by the participating teams are testament to the talent we have in the country.

“The solutions they have come up with for the fintech and banking space are immense, and we are happy to be a part of this. Our partnership with MEST will provide lots of opportunities for startup companies and the utilization of next-generation ideas for Ghana’s socio-economic growth.”

Programmes Director at MEST, Femi Adewumi said, “It was inspiring to see the MEST campus filled with a hundred young creative minds from eleven African countries, hacking away at problems in the banking and finance space.

“The excitement and energy were palpable. The Absa – MEST partnership has proven to be very progressive. We see a lot of opportunities available for many startups in the fintech and banking space in Ghana and MEST is always happy to be an enabler.”

Beyond the competition, Absa Bank’s digital transformation team are collating all the solutions delivered by the teams to select a few that are commercially implementable for Absa’s customers and clients.

  • I have begun processes to get Akufo-Addo impeached – Murtala Mohammed

Tamale Central Member of Parliament (MP), Murtala Mohammed, has revealed his plans of commencing processes to impeach the President, Nana Akufo-Addo.

About 80 New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs this week demanded the sacking of Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, over the current economic hardships.

They threatened to boycott government business in parliament should the president fail to fulfill their demands.

The group, however, accepted President Akufo-Addo’s request asking them to allow the Finance Minister some time to finish negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

But speaking on Citi TV’s political analysis show, The Big Issue, Murtala Mohammed says President Akufo-Addo must also go, adding that, he has already taken steps to ensure that the President is removed.

“If we think that it is justified to call for the removal of the Finance Minister, let us not be hypocrites. It is equally justified to call for the removal of the President. I am assuring that, I have started talking to some of my friends to ensure that we initiate a motion to ensure that the President is impeached. I have started [the process].”

The majority caucus in Parliament called for the dismissal of Mr. Ofori-Atta, and the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen.

Their colleagues on the Minority side have also filed a motion of censure against the Finance Minister.

The pressure on the Finance Minister has come amid an economic crisis that has seen inflation reach 37.2 percent and the cedi tagged as the worst-performing currency in 2022.

Ghana’s forex challenges have seen the Cedi trading at over GH¢14 to a dollar.

Petrol prices have also crossed the GH¢15 per litre mark and are expected to fuel further inflation.

In response to previous calls for the removal of the Finance Minister, President Akufo-Addo said he would continue to back Mr. Ofori-Atta.

“Until the Minister goes, the President must go. Every single action of this Minister is an action that is taken and approved by the President. The Minister did not take any action that is approved and sanctioned by the President. Every action because every Minister works with the vision of the appointing authority and in this case, the appointing authority is the President”, Murtala Mohammed.

  • Danquah Institute holds symposium on breast cancer; 154 screened, 6 cases detected at UCC

The Danquah institute has held a symposium at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) to mark the global month-long advocacy of breast cancer in the Central Region.

This forms part of efforts to reduce cases of breast cancer, increase its awareness for early detection and encourage the public to break the myth surrounding the disease.

The symposium organised in partnership with the Women’s Commission under the Senior Staff Association of the University of Cape Coast and the Breast Care International had a total of one hundred and fifty- four (154) students and staff from the University community screened.

Out of the number screened, it emerged that six cases (6) were recorded between the ages of 20- 40years with the youngest 21 and oldest 40 years respectively.

Speaking on the theme for the event, “Breast Cancer Knowledge, Attitudes and screening Practices in Ghana” the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Professor Mrs. Rosemond Boohene noted that breast cancer is a health red flag which has been hoisted very high to attract the attention of policy makers, health experts, traditional authorities and the ordinary citizens.

Expressing her appreciation to the Danquah Institute for bearing the cost of the screening and consultation exercise for the University community by bringing on board the Breast Care International, she stressed that breast cancer is the leading type of cancer in women.

“When the pandemic hit, people with breast cancer found themselves in a difficult situation with a lot of them at high risk of contracting the virus due to overwhelmed hospitals with some extreme cases even postponed” – she recounted.

She observed that in 2020, there were 2.3 million diagnoses of breast cancer and 685,000 deaths globally, with higher mortality rate of women in developing countries.

Declaring her unflinching support to win the global fight against the disease, the Professor of Enterprise Development at the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Small Enterprise at the School of Business of the UCC, explained that the global breast cancer awareness initiative of the World Health Organisation aims to reduce the cancer mortality by 2.5% per year.

“The WHO has introduced three measures to achieve this goal through health promotion for early detection, timely diagnosis and comprehensive breast cancer management, and the school together with all partners supports the course through the first and second measures because we believe in contributing to a healthy Ghana in our own small way hoping to see more partnership with the Danquah Institute to achieve the third measure.”

Delivering a speech on behalf of the Executive Director of the Danquah Institute, the Board Secretary of the Institute, Lawyer Mansa Williams said the Institute prides itself in creating more of such platforms for dialogue and to add to knowledge for informed decision making for policy makers on subject of national importance and the wellbeing of the people.

She remarked “the programme is important to change attitudes towards the fight against the disease because breast cancer is an ailment the country and globally can’t be taken for granted as it affects mostly women. In Ghana, 31.8% of cancer cases were breast cancer and mostly diagnosed at the advanced stages unlike in the developed world high percentage of cases are detected at the early stages.”

She urged that the narrative in our parts of the world especially Ghana is changed with conscious effort to deepen our knowledge about the disease, change our attitudes and cultivate the habit to screen frequently.

She observed that last year the institute successfully held a similar event which involved a panel discussion with eminent persons with vast experience on the subject to sensitize the general public and duty bearers to rise to the occasion by putting in place effective policies to help mitigate the dangers the disease is having on the human resource capital especially women and girls.

In conclusion, she stated that the Institute is committed to hold more of these events by moving out of Accra to make the desired impact as the Institute is aware of the seriousness of breast cancer in order not to lose lives.

Resource person for the symposium, who is a retired Radiographer and renowned breast cancer advocate with the Breast Care International (BCI), Madam Grace Animwaa addressing the University community and invited dignitaries underscored the need to overcome fear in getting scanned as the effects of radiography seems to cause more fright to women.

The advocate who has worked at the Komfo Anokye Hospital and with over 30 years of experience in mammography however admitted that there is a level of negative effect in coming into contact with radiation but it shouldn’t deter the public most especially women as the advantage of knowing the status and taking charge of the breast outweighs the dangers when diagnosis is delayed.

Other dignitaries that graced the occasion are the Deputy Director of the Danquah Institute, Dr. Hayford Ayerakwa, the Womens’ Commissioner of Senior Staff Association-UCC, Mrs. Joana Akinola, Director of the Centre for Gender, Research, Advocacy and Documentation-CEGRAD, Dr. Georgina Yaa Oduro, a representative of the Central Regional Minister, Hon Justina Marigold Assan, the President of Breast Cancer Survivors’ Association, Mrs Vivian Gyasi Sarfo and others.

The session of the symposium where survivors shared their stories was moderated by Dr. Doris Akyere Boateng, a Fellow of the Danquah Institute and senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, Social Work department.

  • Ofori-Atta Must Go: “It doesn’t make sense” – Boakye Agyarko reacts to Akufo-Addo’s plea

Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko has criticized President Akufo-Addo for suggesting that there’s no one else in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to take over from Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

Over 80 Members of Parliament of the NPP threatened to boycott government business if the President doesn’t sack Ken Ofori Atta and Charles Adu Boahen, Minister of State at the Finance Ministry.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, the MPs stressed “if our request is not responded to positively, we will not be present for the budget hearing, neither will we participate in the debate”.

According to Subin MP, Eugene Boakye Antwi, the Finance Minister is “experimenting with this country and we’ve had enough”.

President Akufo-Addo following the MPs’ protest, held an emergency meeting with them and pleaded that Ofori Atta be allowed to conclude talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and also present the 2023 Budget Statement of government in November.

In a statement signed by Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the NPP MPs have agreed that Ofori Atta will stay “until the conclusion of the round of negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the presentation of the Budget Statement and Economic Policy in November, 2022 and the subsequent passage of the Appropriation Bill after which time the demand will be acted upon.”

However, Boakye Agyarko disagrees with the President.

Speaking on Peace FM’s The Platform programme, he said “it doesn’t make sense” to ask the Finance Minister to stay for now.

“I don’t see how one person…so what are we going to do if God forbid we wake up tomorrow morning and he’s no more? Are we going to ask God to wait and allow him to finish the negotiations? It doesn’t make sense…it speaks ill of us”

  • Ignorant, unprofessional – NDC MP takes on ‘spin doctor’ Adom-Otchere

Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, has slammed broadcaster Paul Adom-Otchere describing him as ignorant and unprofessional.

The two have been engaged in a verbal spat over the MP’s reference to Minority Leader Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s past as a spare parts dealer in a recent interview.

Murtala addressing the Majority Leader earlier on last week told TV3: “You listened to him in the press conference and he even said that the Speaker doesn’t even understand the law.

“When the Speaker was a lawyer practising, you, Honourable Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, you were selling spare parts at Magazine, at the time the Speaker was a practising lawyer.”

In an editorial on the October 27 edition of Good Evening Ghana, Adom-Otchere berated the, MP for denigrating the Majority Leader and by extension spare parts dealers.

Reacting to Adom-Otchere in an interview with Metro TV News, Murtala explained that his reference to Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as a spare parts dealer was borne out by the facts which Adom-Otchere was clearly ignorant about.

“Indeed, that was his job and it is not denigratory, that was his job, he was actually selling spare parts at the time when Bagbin was already practicing as a lawyer … It had nothing to do with spare parts dealers,” he stressed.

He also disclosed that his father was actually a spare parts dealer and he (Murtala) had at a point in his life managed the spare parts business. “As a matter of fact, unknown to Paul, my father was a spare parts dealer, I used to manage father’s spare parts store. My father used to deal in sewing machines and bicycles and spare parts of same.

“So, for him to spin and create the impression that I was denigrating spare parts dealers, for me, that is most unfortunate. So, I knew he is ignorant, frankly; but I never knew he is that unprofessional,” Murtala jabbed.

Paul Adom-Otchere said that Murtala, by the statement he made, lacks wisdom.

“I talked about wisdom… that wisdom, it is not everybody that is able to demonstrate it like that. You’re a politician, a Member of Parliament, and you’re talking down spare parts dealers.

“Murtala, Allah will forgive you eh. Don’t do that again. You are part of a mass party, the National Democratic Congress, and you are rubbishing spare parts dealers that their nobodies.

“Don’t you know that people finish university these days with a first class in electrical engineering and then go and do spare parts dealing? What is wrong with some of our politicians?

“Murtala was talking down spare parts dealers that Majority Leader Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu he was a spare parts dealer when Bagbin was practising law. Murtala is saying that. The other day, he was not happy that somebody was calling him a teacher,” he said.

  • We have been cursed with leaders who care about their pockets – Ebo Whyte

One of Ghana’s most renowned playwrights, James Ebo Whyte, popularly known as, Uncle Ebo Whyte, says the country has been cursed with leaders who only care about amassing wealth.

According to him, over the years he has observed that the country has not been blessed with leaders who care about how the country would progress.

“We have been cursed with leaders who look at their pockets first. What am I going to get out of this?” he said.

He made this remark on the ShowBiz Roundtable organised by Joy Entertainment at the Labadi Beach Hotel on Saturday, October 29, 2022.

The thought-leadership forum, themed ‘Music Business and Tourism’, aims at delving deep into, and moving conversations from simply identifying some of the industry’s woes, to sharing ideas and insights that are critical to the growth and progress of the creative industry.

Due to his contention, Uncle Ebo opined that when recommendations from the meeting is handed over to the leaders, “it won’t mean anything to them and that is sad.”

The motivational speaker went on to say that due to the attitude of the country’s leaders, “he is suspicious of anyone who spends more to get a job for which you will be paid less than what is put in.”

“To get to Parliament, for instance, you would spend so much that if all you were coming in it for salary and ex-gratia, it would come nowhere near what you invested in it and yet people are prepared to die for it. Meaning that we are not coming because of what you think we are coming, we have seen something that maybe we cannot tell you about, but it is there and we are coming to get,” he said.

Mr Ebo Whyte expressed regret that the creative sector has been abandoned by the government to its fate.

He hoped that a day will come when a government will focus on the creative industry as its legacy.

  • Minority’s attempts to remove Finance Minister won’t materialize – NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) believes moves by the Minority in Parliament to have Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta removed from office is an exercise in futility.

It says, the Majority caucus will also not support the motion of censure against the Minister as filed by the Minority.

A Deputy Director of Communications of the NPP, Kamal Deen Abdulai described attempts for the impeachment of the Finance Minister as ‘much ado about nothing’.

“The Speaker admitting that motion is very predictable and it doesn’t mean that the conditions for admitting such a motion to be full will be met.”

“I am confident this motion for a vote of censure against Finance Minister is much ado about nothing. I can say emphatically that, the Minority will not have the support of the Majority to pass a vote of censure for the Finance Minister to be removed”, he said on Citi FM/Citi TV‘s The Big Issue.

Commenting on the Majority caucus back track over its demands for the Finance Minister’s dismissal, after meeting President Akufo-Addo, Kamal Deen Abdulai said there is nothing wrong with the NPP legislators softening their stance.

“It’s trite knowledge, some Majority MPs called for the head of the Finance Minister. Also, after engagements they have changed their stance that some time be given the Minister agreeing that they are not going to pursue this matter once the President has spoken to them and the unification we are seeking has been seen.”

About 80 New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs this week demanded the sacking of Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta over the current economic hardships.

  • Continue breast cancer campaign – Dr Addai-Wiafe urges public

As October draws to a close, the President of Breast Care International (BCI), has urged the public to continue breast campaigns in the country to prevent late screening.

Dr. Beatrice Addai Wiafe, says because breast cancer does not just happen in October, ladies should get interested in going to the hospital for frequent checkups.

Dr. Addai-Wiafe stressed the importance of workplace education and awareness raising given the hectic schedules of working mothers.

Continue breast cancer campaign - Dr Addai-Wiafe urges public

“Today, we came to educate their (Contracta) members of staff. Workplace education and awareness creation and screening are very important because the working mother is always busy.”

The oncologist stated that, a working mother does not have time to screen themselves and therefore the late-stage of the disease occasionally manifests in them.

Speaking at a breast cancer awareness event organised by the Contracts Construction Company Limited in Kumasi, Dr. Wiafe-Addai also expressed her gratitude to the construction firm for providing transportation, medication, food, and other services to more than 20 breast cancer patients at the Peace and Love Hospital.

Continue breast cancer campaign - Dr Addai-Wiafe urges public

In order to prevent the late stage of the sickness, which she says is highly expensive to cure, she recommended to women to examine their breasts routinely.

“One late-stage case can cater for 10 early-stage diseases. So why don’t you come early so that even if you don’t have money, we can support you to go through your treatment? If you come late, then you are just coming to squander all the money that people have contributed and that is not good enough,” she noted.

Due to the high levels of fat they contain, Dr. Addai-Wiafe also advised the general public, in particular women, to avoid consuming too many “fast foods” because it is bad for the health of their breasts.

According to Mr. Emmanuel Danso, a consultant at the Contracta Construction Company Limited, the event was organised as part of their social obligation to protect the public and their employees against breast cancer.

Continue breast cancer campaign - Dr Addai-Wiafe urges public

He said that several sensitisation activities have been planned as part of their ongoing campaign to raise breast cancer awareness in several districts of Kumasi, including Bantama, the Racecourse, and the Airport areas.

Mr. Danso also mentioned that the cost of treating breast cancer is high, which is why the company has chosen to support some breast cancer patients for the past two years in an effort to decrease unnecessary deaths.

“It’s part of our corporate social responsibility because treating breast cancer is not easy, it’s very expensive so as part of our corporate social responsibility, we sponsor them for this payment for the past two years,” he indicated.

  • Anti-LGBT Bill will be passed before 2024 elections – Speaker Bagbin

The anti-LGBT Bill currently before parliament will be passed before the next elections, Speaker of the House, Alban Bagbin has said.

The Speaker, earlier this week, asked the Committee working on the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill to expedite works in presenting its report to the house for a debate.

Speaking at a media engagement, Rt. Hon Bagbin emphasized that “the sexual rights and human values Bill that is being handled by the committee will definitely be passed before the next elections. That Bill will go through.”

The Minority had accused the Committee of deliberately delaying work on the Bill and threatened to block the passage of government Bills if the anti-LGBT Bill was not worked on speedily.

While data indicates that most Ghanaians are in favour of the Bill, it has faced criticism from renowned artists and academics.

The Bill prescribes that people of the same sex who engage in sexual activity could spend up to 10 years in jail.

Varying forms of support for the LGBTQ+ community will also be criminalized if the Bill is passed into law.

It has, however, generated some widespread conversation, with many expressing varied views about some clauses in the document.

“When we talk about sexual rights, we are talking about things that will add value to human beings by way of creating opportunities and equal playing ground in giving privileges and rights to everyone and removing all the restrictions and hurdles to make people freer. That is what we call human rights, whatever negates this is not a human right”, the Speaker of Parliament added.

Following the heated conversations amidst pressure on Parliament to pass the Bill, there have been speculations that MPs who support the Bill may be denied some privileges from members of the international community.

Many persons and institutions have filed memoranda in support of the Bill and to help fine-tune it.

A number of renowned legal, academic and civil society professionals have also filed documents challenging the legislation.

In the memorandum, they contend that the Bill is an “impermissible invasion of the inviolability of human dignity.”

They further argued that pushing through the Bill will be to challenge Ghana’s constitution and democracy.

  • Government will conclude IMF negotiations and incorporate deal in 2023 Budget – Habib Iddrisu

Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Habib Iddrisu says government will complete negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) before the 2023 Budget will be presented to Parliament.

The Tolon MP is convinced that government will secure a bailout for the country before November 15.

Speaking on Newsfile, Saturday, he said due to the confidence and trust imposed by the IMF in Akufo-Addo’s government, negotiations have been at a fast pace to secure a programme for the country.

“The IMF has trust and confidence in this government and the President for that matter…At the end of the day, the 2023 Budget will be presented and I am very convinced from where I sit that the negotiations with IMF will be concluded by then and will be incorporated in the budget.

“I am convinced that by the 15th of November the budget that will be presented in Parliament will have incorporated in it the IMF programme,” he said.

This, he said would happen because of the “credible people at the Finance Ministry”.

Meanwhile, the lawmaker has debunked claims that the government provided inaccurate macroeconomic figures to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The Tolon MP argued that the IMF with such credibility and credentials could not have accepted just any macroeconomic figures from the Finance Ministry.

Habib Iddrisu was reacting to allegations on Newsfile by Former Deputy Finance Minister, Mona Quartey that the Economic Management provided incorrect macro-economic numbers to the IMF.

“We need to respect the institution IMF, especially since due diligence is done by them. They are a credible organization, they will not just sit down and say that the government of Ghana is giving them wrong information and they just take information like that.

“It is never true that government has provided them with wrong information,” he said on Newsfile, Saturday.

  • IMF has discovered lies in data from Economic Management Team – Mona Quartey alleges

Former Deputy Finance Minister, Mona Quartey, has alleged that officials of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), have discovered some inaccuracies in the macro-economic figures presented by government’s economic management team.

According to her, this revelation raises credibility issues which can potentially affect the outcome of Ghana’s ongoing engagements with the IMF.

Contributing to discussions on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, the former NDC appointee, expressed her displeasure about the conduct of the economic management team.

“There has to be a change of the economic management team. This team is no longer credible. This is a team that has lied, not only to the people of Ghana outside your party, but they’ve also lied to you [Akufo-Addo]. And the IMF has found them out. The numbers they gave; the macro-economic numbers they gave were not correct”, she said.

Noting her reservations, the finance expert wondered why the President has refused to sack the members of the economic management team, whom she stressed, have failed in the discharge of their responsibilities.

She added that the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has no business being at post, after supervising the present economic decline.

The comments by Mona Quartey come at a time when scores of Ghanaians are making passionate appeals for the Finance Minister to be sacked.

According to his critics, Mr Ofori-Atta has failed woefully and therefore has no business being at the helm of affairs of leading Ghana’s engagements with the IMF.

Earlier this week, this posture was articulated by some 80 MPS from the ruling government who petitioned the President for Ken Ofori-Atta to be sacked.

Addressing a pres conference on Tuesday, the MPs threatened that they will not support any government business, if the President fails to listen to their demands.

But in a quick turn of events, the MPs, after meeting the President backed down on their calls, aftter the President implored them to allow the Finance Minister to finish the ongoing negotiations with the IMF and presentation of the 2023 Budget Statement.

Touching on this development, Mona Quartey said she is disappointed by the posture of the said MPs.

Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has admitted a motion of censure filed by Minority Members of Parliament to remove embattled Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

On Tuesday, the Minority filed a motion to that effect following the Majority MP’s demands to have the Finance Minister and the Minister of State in charge of Finance at the Ministry of Finance, Charles Adu Boahen dismissed.

According to them, Mr. Ofori-Atta is incompetent and is to blame for the current economic woes of Ghanaians.

Speaking to JoyNews, Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu said they are hopeful by 10th November, they can conclude processes to remove the Finance Minister.

  • Ofori-Atta still Finance Minister because Akufo-Addo wants it – Law Lecturer

Law Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Clara Beeri Kasser-Tee has criticised President Akufo-Addo for failing to sack Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, Clara Beeri Kasser-Tee wondered what President Akufo-Addo’s economic goals are, considering the current economic crisis and his refusal to sack Ken Ofori-Atta.

According to her, the reason why President Akufo-Addo has not yielded to calls for him to dismiss the Finance Minister could be that he is not alarmed by the current state of the economy.

“President should have considered whether considering the current economic situation, that is what he expected, because I would expect that he appointed the Finance Minister to help him achieve a certain goal for the economy.

“In the economic circumstances that we are, is that the goal for which he brought the Finance Minister on board?” she asked.

She said if the President has not dismissed Ken Ofori-Atta, the justification could be that Akufo-Addo is not perturbed about the current economic crisis.

“If we are going to be quite objective, if the Finance Minister is not doing what the President wants him to do, the President has the power to fire him, if the President has not done that it is a reasonable conclusion to draw that this is what the President wants him to do,” the Law Lecturer stated.

On Tuesday, October 25, 80 out of the 137 Majority MPs demanded the sacking of the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, and the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu-Boahen citing their poor management of the country’s fiscal space.

The MPs at a press conference held at Parliament blamed the duo for the delay in the ongoing International Monetary Fund programme negotiations that is expected to give the country a bailout.

“We are by this medium communicating our strong desire that the President changes the Minister of Finance and the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry without further delay to restore hope to the financial sector and reverse the downward trend in the growth of the economy.”

The group, led by the MP for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, said the failure of government to heed to their demands will result in their boycotting of all government business.

“Meanwhile, we want to serve notice, and notice is hereby served that until such persons as aforementioned are made to resign or removed from office, we members of the Majority Caucus here in Parliament will not participate in any business of government by or for the President by any other minister.

“We hope that those of us [at] the backbench and members of the Majority Caucus will abide by this prayer. We are saying that if our request is not responded to positively, we will not be present for the budget hearing, neither will we participate in the debate.”

Their move was applauded by the general public and other groups who have in the past called for similar action to be taken.

This drew the attention of the President and summoned the NPP MPs for a meeting on the substantive matter.

After the meeting with President Akufo-Addo, the MPs in a U-turn later acceded to the President’s appeal to allow Ken Ofori-Atta and Charles Adu-Boahen stay in office till after the IMF deal is sorted out and the 2023 Budget is presented to Parliament.

In a statement released by the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, he said, the Minister of Finance and the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry will stay “until the conclusion of the round of negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the presentation of the Budget Statement and Economic Policy in November, 2022 and the subsequent passage of the Appropriation Bill after which time the demand will be acted upon.”

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced that effective October 31, its special service centre at El-wak sports stadium will be closed down.

The Authority opened the registration centre at El-wak months ago to facilitate the registration for the Ghana card and its replacement.

The NIA in a statement said all applicants who have completed the processes for a card update or replacement but are yet to pick their cards should visit the Greater Accra Regional office at Kinbu.

“Applicants requesting update and card replacement services should visit the nearest NIA District or Regional Office,” the Authority said in a statement.

NIA closes special service for Ghana Card registration at El-wak stadium

It added that all applicants who have any request regarding the card verification should do so at its Shiashie head office.

Meanwhile, the Authority says it has so far issued 15,826,148 Ghana cards out of the 16,627,325 printed cards from 17,109,627 registrations as of the end of August this year.

Addressing a press conference in Accra recently, the Executive Secretary of the NIA, Professor Kenneth Agyeman Attafuah, said while his outfit admits that there were some challenges with the issuance of the cards, it could not be blamed solely if some people did not have their cards yet.

He said some Ghanaians have failed to take advantage of the various opportunities for them to go for their cards at the decentralised levels.

“We still have some cards issued during the mass registration exercises in 2020. I was in Koforidua about three months ago on a monitoring exercise. I called someone whose card was ready to come for it. That person said it was not time for the collection of cards and that he would come for it when he had need for it.

  • Ghana’s COVID-19 vaccination administration impressive – Study

An assessment of citizens’ experience on COVID-19 vaccinations shows that vaccinators spent a minimal of about ten minutes at vaccination centres.

Similarly, a look at Ghana’s compliance with the National Vaccination Deployment Plan (NVDP) also shows that access to COVID-19 vaccines among vulnerable groups and eligible persons as captured in the plan looks promising but can be improved.

The monitoring, done by SEND Ghana, with funding support from the Partnership for Transparency Fund also shows that the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines among healthcare workers, teachers and persons with co-morbidities was impressive.

Madam Anita Awuku, Program Coordinator, SEND Ghana, who disseminated findings of the assessment in Accra on Thursday, said the monitoring showed that generally, satisfaction with the vaccination process was very high.

However, there were some appreciable gaps relating to educating clients on the COVID-19 vaccines, possible side effects and how to deal with it as well as screening for contraindication conditions to the vaccine.

The assessment indicated that majority of the vaccination centres made available hand hygiene facilities, including alcohol-based sanitizers and separated waiting areas for vaccine recipients to rest and be monitored temporarily for any immediate adverse effects.

It showed that vaccination centres observed strict observance to infection prevention and control measures during vaccinations sessions and all the centres were cleaned.

Vaccine carriers had enough conditioned ice packs and healthcare workers in most of the centres practiced hand hygiene.

The assessment recommended that the Ghana Health Service (GHS) convened refresher sessions for its staff on the NDVP.

It said the health directorates must be encouraged to sustain the vaccine uptake promotion efforts to contribute to the attainment of herd immunity.

“Health promotion efforts for the COVID-19 vaccination exercise and subsequent vaccination exercise should adequately address possible side effects and safety as these are key for vaccine uptake,” the monitoring report said.

The assessment asked the Ministry of Health and the GHS to take steps to increase Cold Chain Equipment (CCE) and vaccine logistics across districts.

  • 19% increase in transport fares takes effect today

Ghanaians will from today, October 29, 2022, officially pay more for transport services as the 19% increase in fares announced by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) takes effect.

The GPRTU announced the increase in fares earlier in the week.

It emerged that some public transport operators started implementing new transport fares, ahead of the implementation date.

As of Thursday morning, October 27, some commercial drivers and their conductors had started applying the new rate without regard for the concerns of unprepared passengers.

A trip from Pig Farm to Circle, which costs GH₵3.50 went for GH₵4.20. The new fare increased by 70 pesewas, as against the expected 66 pesewas.

Many registered their displeasure on the matter.

The GPRTU reached an agreement with President Akufo-Addo and other transport operators across the country on a 19% rate on Wednesday, October 26, 2022.

The increase in fares has been attributed to the recent increases in fuel prices, as well as the galloping inflation and the Cedi’s current depreciation.

Transport fares have increased by 54% since the beginning of the year. Fifteen per cent in February and 20% in May. October marks the third time fares have been adjusted.

  • NPP being stubborn with criticism of Mahama’s speech on economy – Kwakye Ofosu

Former President John Mahama’s spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, described the New Patriotic Party as stubborn after its members’ criticism of Mr. John Mahama’s speech on the economy.

Though some NPP members who commented on Mr. Mahama’s speech described it as hypocritical and in bad faith, among others, Mr. Ofosu said the NPP needed to show humility given the current economic crisis.

“It is a bit disappointing that they remain obstinate and have not shown any inclination towards addressing the problems we face.”

“Any objective-minded Ghanaian who listened to the former President on Thursday would admit that he spoke to the issues in a manner that they should be spoken to.”

Among other things, Mr. Mahama urged the President to cut down on the size of Presidential staffers, reduce the number of ministers to 65, jettison the Finance Minister and stop funding the national cathedral project.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu added that the NPP was certain to lose the next election because of its manner of governance.

“I am certain that if they do not listen to the wise prescription as put out by President Mahama, it is only a matter of time before the people boot them out at the earliest opportunity and then they will learn in humility in opposition”.

  • Gyakye Quayson technically remains Assin North MP – Speaker cites Judicial communication gap

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has reiterated that an embattled Member of Parliament, James Gyakye Quayson of Assin North remains a lawmaker despite a court order barring him from holding himself out as such.

Bagbin while commenting on the status of the MP on Friday, October 28, cited the lack of communication on the part of the Judiciary for his view on the matter.

He said everything he knows of the Gyakye Quayson matter is from what he reads in the media and what he hears from third parties despite the fact that as leader of the legislature, he must be formally communicated to on the court’s decision to bar an MP from serving their term.

“As of now, I still don’t have any evidence of that and so we should let sleeping dogs lie until the proper thing is done. The issues that were raised by the Hon. Ablakwa is on page 8 under item 3, you have the name number 45 which deals with the Hon. Member for Assin North.

“Because his matter has been pending and I don’t have any evidence on it. I have been reading in papers, I have been hearing from people but we don’t have any communication from our colleague from the arm of government in charge of the judiciary on the matter,” he told MPs.

He added that he cannot take what he reads in the papers as sufficient evidence to act on, “so, I have raised this issue before expecting that there would be a communication to us on that issue and nothing has come so far and that is the difficulty I have.”

Apex Court bars Assin North MP from Parliament

A seven-member Supreme Court panel, months back ruled that the MP cannot hold himself out as a legislator pending the determination of the case challenging his eligibility.

The court by a 5-2 majority decision, said Quayson, who has been sued by one Michael Ninfa, for not renouncing his Canadian citizenship at the time he picked nomination forms to contest December 7, 2020, Parliamentary Election, cannot go to Parliament to conduct business.

The presiding judge, Justice Jones Dotse joined four members of the bench- Justices Mariama Owusu, Prof Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu, Gertrude Torkonoo and Emmanuel Yoni Kulendi, to uphold the interlocutory injunction application filed against the MP. The two judges who dissented were Justices Agness Dordzie and NeneAmegatcher.

On the substantive suit, the Apex Court directed an expeditious hearing and urged the parties and their counsel to cooperate with the court in that regard.

  • ‘The death penalty sins against the principle of human dignity’ – Catholic Bishops’ Conference

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has thrown its support behind two bills currently before Parliament which seek to abolish the death penalty from the country’s legal system.

  • Ignore reports that Akufo-Addo has refused Adu Boahen’s resignation – Finance Ministry

The Ministry of Finance has described as false reports that President Akufo-Addo is refusing the resignation of Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen.

In a statement issued on social networking site, Twitter on Friday, October 28, 2022, the Ministry said “rumors about the Honourable Minister of State tendering in his resignation are untrue” and should be treated with all the contempt it deserves.

The rumors have been fueled by the Member of Parliament (MP) for the North Tongu constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. In a twitter post, Mr. Ablakwa alleged that the President has refused to accept the resignation of the Minister of State.

This, the Ministry says the allegations are “untrue” and “unhelpful”; urging the general public to “disregard them completely”.

Mr. Adu Boahen had come under pressure last Tuesday with some members of the New Patriotic Party in Parliament demanding his removal together with Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta for the current economic crises.

The Majority MPs insisted that the removal of both Ministers will restore confidence in the economy.

However, after meeting the President, the Majority MPs have softened their stance accepting the President’s plea to have the Ministers stay in office to seal Ghana’s bailout deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

  • I’ve never said women should not marry – Gifty Anti

Ghanaian media personality, Gifty Anti, says he has never advised women to stay away from marriage.

According to her, in all her advocacies on women empowerment, she has never downplayed the relevance of marriage or urged her fellow women to abandon their relationships.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews’ Paa Kwesi Schandorf on Wednesday, she explained that even though marriage is important, her emphasis has been that women should not see marriage as the ultimate indicator of success.

She said many women have been oriented to see marriage as what makes them complete; a view she insisted should be completely discarded.

“I dare anybody till today to bring a tape where I’ve said or somewhere I’ve written that marriage is not good [and] that I don’t want women to get married. What they will tell you is that, that is the perception they got. That’s the impression they got”, the ace broadcaster stressed.

“Consistently, I’ve talked about the fact that marriage is not what will make a woman achieve her goals or become somebody. You need to know who you are.

And I’ve spoken in churches over and over again and told the young ladies that if you’re desperate for marriage, you’ll be desperate throughout the marriage.

I’ve told them to prepare themselves to know who they are. To have their own identity before they get into marriage”, she added.

Gifty Anti’s comments come in the wake of a recent Facebook post by the spokesperson of the Education Ministry, Kwasi Kwarteng, who accused her of destroying young women who listened to her feminism sermons in the past.

According to Mr. Kwarteng, her audience who heeded her advice on women empowerment began unhealthy competitions with men which collapsed their homes and marriages.

In his post on Wednesday, he said the former news anchor inspired her followers to shun marriage and focus on their careers; only to later do the opposite.

In Mr. Kwarteng’s view, this constitutes a ‘betrayal’ which Gifty must correct by teaching women to balance their career aspirations with other vital aspects of their lives.

But reacting to this, the ace broadcaster said she will not respond to the spokesperson of the Education Ministry and other social media critics regarding her views on feminism.

According to the avowed feminist, even though she is passionate about the empowerment of women, she will not respond to her social media critics.

Speaking to JoyNews’ Paa Kwesi Schandorf , she stated that she stands by her assertion that men fear women with power, but won’t respond to critics on social media.

“I’m sure you’ve read the story [and] you’ve listened to the tape.

I will not answer to anybody who attacks me on social media. If I want to, I will go there and do it. But if you as a very good journalist, a seasoned one has questions for me, I will answer. But I will not react to anything that anybody said about me on social media”, she said.

She added “This gentleman [Kwasi Kwarteng] is not the only one to have reacted. A lot of other guys have and some women as well. So I will not respond to this gentleman.

Even if the President had written that on social media, I wouldn’t have responded in any interview. People hide behind social media and so all sorts of things”.

    Background

It will be recalled that over a decade ago, Gifty Anti began a series of spirited advocacies calling on women to focus on their career goals instead of yielding to demands for them to get married.

On television, radio and other platforms, she stressed the need for women to put more emphasis on personal excellence instead of responding to the pressure to marry and raise children.

This was widely embraced by a lot of her followers who subsequently praised her resilience in combating patriarchy. At conferences and other public fora, she was hailed for helping bring women into the limelight.

A few years after this wave, Gifty Anti got married to the Chief of Akwamu Adumasa, Nana Ansah Kwao IV.

Their colourful union happened at the Trinity Baptist Church on 25th October, 2015.

In what was hailed as a ‘royal wedding’, the two broadcasters were celebrated for days across both traditional and social media, amidst tons of congratulatory messages.

However, a section of the public took exception to Gifty’s marriage, accusing her of backing down on her initial ideals.

According to her critics, it was disingenuous for her to get married after expressing so much hate and dislike for men.

The two broadcasters in hearty smiles during the eventful ceremony

This position is what Mr. Kwarteng re-echoed in his Facebook comments on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, some individuals have thrown their weight behind Mr. Kwarteng’s criticisms; describing it as valid.

According to them, the broadcaster deceived the public with her advocacies.

Others have however, disagreed with Kwasi Kwarteng’s assertions, describing them as baseless attacks.
