  • LaLiga issue warning as European Super League talk rumbles on

LaLiga have warned a fresh attempt to launch a European Super League will be offering only a rehashed version of the competition that launched and collapsed within days last year, leaving clubs humiliated.

In a statement, LaLiga pointed to a previous proposal from 2019, as well as the calamitous launching of the Super League last year that saw 12 teams agree to take part, before almost all pulled out in a hurry after a furious backlash from fans, politicians and football governing bodies.

It was revealed in October 2022 that A22 Sports Management – a company representing the Super League clubs – is planning to revive the proposals. Bernd Reichart, a media executive, has been appointed to head up the plans.

LaLiga said on Twitter on Friday: “The promoters of the Super League are now preparing a model similar to the one put forward in 2019, which is still closed or mostly closed, which will destroy the national leagues and which has already been rejected by clubs and leagues in Europe.”

Spanish giants Barcelona are among the teams still keen on the idea of a new competition, with club president Joan Laporta last month saying it would be “more even” than the current system, claiming UEFA is not satisfactorily enforcing the ethos of financial fair play.

LaLiga published a video expressing opposition to the Super League, stating “the whole of European football took a stand against its closed, selfish and elitist model”.

“Now the promoters of the Super League are trying to conceal its format, claiming that they still don’t have a fixed model although it will be an inclusive and open,” LaLiga added.

“We know that this is false, and that they want to present a semi-closed format similar to 2019 which has already been rejected by the clubs and European leagues.

“This model is based on promotion and relegation between European divisions where the national leagues do not provide direct access to the top tier. On the contrary, they perpetuate the participation of a privileged few, even if they perform poorly in their domestic leagues.

“To be clear: anything less than any club earning its place in Europe’s top flight through success in the domestic leagues will remain a closed or semi-closed model.

“We have also heard that the Super League wants to claim to be the saviour of football, saying that the current system no longer appeals to young people. Fake news. As an example, data shows that LaLiga’s audience in Spain among those under the age of 24 has increased by more than 22 per cent in the last four seasons.”

LaLiga also said research showed football’s global fan base had risen by 3.4 per cent in the 16-29 age bracket, while stating TikTok metrics revealed 60 per cent of its mainly young audience consumes football content.

The statement from LaLiga said the Super League’s promise of “a more exciting competition” would in reality mean “a constant stream of the same type of clashes, turning the extraordinary into the ordinary”.

It warned such a competition “would destroy the ability to turn dreams into reality”, denying smaller clubs than the cherry-picked elite the long-established pathway to competition at the highest level.

LaLiga, whose president Javier Tebas has been a vocal opponent of the proposed new competition, added: “The promoters of the Super League must respect the will of European fans and citizens, where the Council of Europe has already taken a position against the Super League and the European Parliament has defended an open, democratic model based on meritocracy.”

  • Klopp in fighting mood again ahead of trip to Spurs

Jurgen Klopp acknowledges Liverpool cannot afford to “be picky” after a slow start in the Premier League, meaning they are ready to fight again against a Tottenham side he never relishes facing.

Liverpool head into the weekend in ninth place, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal, 13 shy of champions Manchester City and 10 off opponents Spurs, who are third.

The Reds have lost their past two league matches to Nottingham Forest and Leeds United, both of whom were in the bottom three heading into those games.

For that reason, Klopp cannot write off a meeting with “a confident, strong opponent” at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

“It’s a big game for us, a massive game for us – difficult as well, Spurs away,” he said.

“I didn’t count the points distance between us and them, but we cannot be picky with opponents and games where we want to get points. We have to go for it, definitely, but it’s difficult.”

Klopp is aware of the scrutiny around his every word while Liverpool are struggling, but he insists there is no alternative to talking up the “fighting” mood required to rescue their season.

That attitude will be needed again in a fixture of which Klopp has never been “1,000 per cent convinced”, even if Tottenham are winless in nine in the league against Liverpool going back to 2017.

A positive, the manager accepted, is the way Liverpool have risen to the challenge of facing elite opposition this season, advancing in the Champions League and beating Napoli in midweek.

“To explain wins is really easy, because nobody listens really,” the manager said. “Everybody is in a great mood, you’re just smiling and ‘it’s in good shape’.

“When you lose, it’s much more difficult; now, each word is really important. But I don’t have five million different words for it.

“If you want to get out of something, you first have to get through it. That’s where we are.

“It might take time, but it’s not that we say now Tottenham is too early for us to really show up already. No, it’s not; we go there and want to be at our best, 100 per cent.

“But sitting here now, being 1,000 per cent convinced ‘yes, we will’? What I can tell you: it never was [easy] before going to Tottenham. I never thought ‘good moment to face Tottenham; let’s smash them’. That was never the case.

“It’s a difficult place to go, a really good team, extremely well coached, and a real fighting unit. There are no friendly games against them. Antonio’s on his toes on the sidelines, the players are in challenges, all these kinds of things, so it will be a tough one.

“But that’s actually what we all want; it’s like a Champions League game in the Premier League. That’s how we will approach it.

“I can imagine in a phase like this it takes a bit longer [talking about defeats]. ‘Always the same: fighting, doing this, oh, again’ – these kinds of things.

“Sorry. Without fighting, we shouldn’t even try. Yes, we have to fight through this; that’s the case, that’s how it is.

“You cannot play through it, you cannot say now to forget the defending stuff, ‘let’s just circle around them, pass the ball through them, nutmegs here, backheels there’. That’s not how it works. That’s why we’re in the mood we are. It’s absolutely okay.

“It’s rather good that in between… you lose against Leeds, and I couldn’t have felt worse, no chance, but then you play a good game against a team in form, and it gives you a lift. That’s normal. Here we go.

“Now, we play against Tottenham and try to feel like we did after the Napoli game.”

  • Klopp disagrees with temporary concussion subs: ‘How we do it is the right way’

Jurgen Klopp does not know how the protocol around concussions in football can be improved, but he is sure temporary substitutions are not the answer.

The issue of head injuries has come to prominence again in the past week, most notably after Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez initially played on in the 4-0 defeat to Newcastle United having collided with Tyrone Mings’ knee.

Liverpool themselves had to use a concussion substitute – a sixth permanent change, which also grants the opposition another switch – in the Champions League win over Napoli in midweek.

James Milner went down early in the second half, having previously thought, like Martinez, he would be able to continue.

The idea of a temporary substitution, giving medical professionals further time to assess potential concussions, has been floated as a possible solution.

But Klopp, speaking in his news conference on Friday, pointed out the signs of some injuries can be delayed so long players would still be allowed to return to the pitch with a concussion.

“What else shall we do? I know you say ‘temporary subs’; I am fine with the concussion sub, absolutely fine,” he said before Sunday’s match against Tottenham.

“Take him off and bring another player – it means you can still change five times after that, and the other team has an extra sub. I think that’s the best we can do.

“You say it takes quite a while between getting the concussion and it really kicking in; I’m not sure then 15 minutes is really the time to wait for it.

“People will tell you after an hour it kicks in. I think how we do it is the right way.

“And it doesn’t happen that often, to be 100 per cent honest. I can’t remember one before [at Liverpool]. It was the first time with the way Milly got hit, but when did we have a concussion before? I can’t remember it.

“We can talk about it like it happens all the time and the boys are constantly in danger. They are not. They are well-trained athletes and it doesn’t happen that often.

“But if it happens, we have a solution for it, which is much better than ever before in football’s history.

“Is there space for improvement? Probably, but I don’t know how.”

Milner will not play against Spurs but can return to non-contact training on Monday and a full session on Tuesday “if everything goes well”.

Liverpool are at least boosted by Jordan Henderson’s recovery from injury and Fabinho’s return to form against Napoli.

“The game was a clear sign of Fabinho how we know him,” Klopp said of his struggling star. “It was a good game and we defended in all positions on a different level to the week before. It felt good.

“For him, it was very important to realise that that’s possible. It was a good start in the right direction.”

  • Bundesliga Matchday 13: Bayern bidding for top spot in Berlin

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich will be targeting top spot when they take on Hertha Berlin in the capital.

Rivals Borussia Dortmund are aiming to continue their upturn in form against second-bottom side Bochum.

Elsewhere, leaders Union Berlin will look to retain their No1 ranking at struggling Bayer Leverkusen, while it is seventh versus sixth as Hoffenheim face RB Leipzig.

Third-placed Freiburg then host FC Cologne on Sunday in the hope of capitalising on any slip-ups from the top two.

Game of the week: Hertha Berlin vs Bayern Munich (Saturday, 2.30pm)

Recent history favours Bayern Munich in this fixture — they have won each of their last five meetings with Hertha Berlin.

Die Roten will hope to take a commanding lead before the break, having scored a Bundesliga-record 24 first-half goals in their 12 games this season.

Hertha, meanwhile, have netted just four strikes before half-time — the lowest tally in the league this season.

The hosts sit in 14th place and have struggled in attack this term. They are the only team yet to score more than twice in a single game, while just the bottom two clubs — Schalke and Bochum — have scored fewer goals (both 11) than their 14.

Additionally, Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann is unbeaten in his 13 matches as a manager against the Old Lady (nine wins, four draws) — more than against any other side.

Borussia Dortmund vs Bochum (Saturday, 2.30pm)

Jude Bellingham scored his third league goal of the season at Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend

Fourth-placed Borussia Dortmund will expect to extend their Bundesliga winning run to three games as they host a Bochum side who have mustered just seven points from their opening 12 matches.

But the visitors have only picked up more top-flight away points against Borussia Monchengladbach (26) than they have against BVB (25 — converted to three points for a win where applicable) in their history.

Nevertheless, Dortmund should be confident of scoring in this fixture and extending an ongoing club record.

They have found the net in each of their last 40 Bundesliga games at home, while Bochum have not kept a clean sheet on the road in the competition during any of their last 18 outings.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Union Berlin (Sunday, 2.30pm)

Bayer Leverkusen and Union Berlin played out a 2-2 draw when the teams last met
Bayer Leverkusen and Union Berlin played out a 2-2 draw when the teams last met

Leverkusen are third-bottom and Union sit top of the pile — but the history of this fixture tells a different story.

The visitors have just one competitive professional win against Leverkusen in nine attempts. However, their sole victory came after losing each of their first five and they are unbeaten since, drawing three times.

Die Werkself are enduring their second-worst start to a Bundesliga campaign, with just nine points from their 12 games so far, while Union have accrued 26.

The league leaders also boast the best defensive record in the division, conceding just nine times, while Leverkusen have shipped 25 goals — the third-worst tally in Germany’s top tier.

Hoffenheim vs RB Leipzig (Saturday, 2.30pm)

Christopher Nkunku is the Bundesliga's joint-top scorer with nine goals this term

Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig are seventh and sixth respectively — and will see this fixture as a perfect opportunity to get ahead of their rivals as they bid to finish in a European spot.

But the hosts have won just one of the pair’s last nine meetings (two draws, six defeats) and only have a worse points-per-game record against Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen.

Leipzig are unbeaten in their last 10 outings in all competitions (eight wins, two draws) and will be boosted by Wednesday’s 4-0 win against Shakhtar Donetsk which secured their Champions League last-16 spot.

Freiburg vs FC Cologne (Sunday, 4.30pm)

Only two points separate Freiburg from the Bundesliga summit.

The Breisgau Brazilians’ 24 points is their best-ever return after 12 games, having never previously managed more than 22 at this stage of a campaign.

Since September 2000, Freiburg have lost just one of their 16 home encounters with FC Cologne across all competitions, winning 10 and drawing five.

Christian Streich’s outfit have kept a league-high seven clean sheets this term, while Cologne have managed just one — the joint-worst record in the division.

    The weekend’s other games

Borussia Monchengladbach vs Stuttgart (Friday, 7.30pm)

    Mainz vs Wolfsburg (Saturday, 2.30pm)

Augsburg vs Eintracht Frankfurt (Saturday, 2.30pm)

Werder Bremen vs Schalke (Saturday, 5.30pm)

  • Fernandes puts Garnacho improvements down to change in attitude

Bruno Fernandes credited Alejandro Garnacho for improving his previously poor attitude after the teenager marked a rare Manchester United start with the winner against Real Sociedad.

Garnacho was named United’s under-18s Player of the Year last season but has largely remained on the periphery of the first-team squad under Erik ten Hag this campaign.

The teenager proved his worth on Thursday, though, scoring his first senior goal for United with a first-half strike in a 1-0 win at La Real in the Europa League.

While the 18-year-old will hope to feature more for Ten Hag at Old Trafford now, Fernandes says he must continue with a much-improved attitude after failing to impress in pre-season with the senior side.

“He was good but he knows we expect at lot from him. He’s still really young. He’s doing really well,” the Portugal international told BT Sport.

“At the beginning of the season, not at his best, in the tour he didn’t have the best attitude that he should have and that’s why he didn’t get his chances until now.

“Now he’s getting chances because he’s training better, he’s having a better attitude and he deserves his chances.”

Garnacho’s strike may earn him a share of the plaudits but United still had to settle for second in Group E after Imanol Alguacil’s side topped the pool by virtue of a better head-to-head record.

Juventus and Barcelona, both sides to be eliminated from the Champions League, could await United in the Europa League’s knockout play-off round, with the draw set to take place on Monday.

Despite not progressing as winners of the group after failing to secure the two-goal win that was required, Fernandes believes the victory will offer Ten Hag’s side encouragement.

“Obviously, we knew that we needed a two-goal difference to go through at the top of the group, but it was not possible,” he added.

“But we won the game, we keep the momentum, we didn’t concede a goal once again, so we have to keep the positives of this game, and there are many positives – much more than negatives.

“So it’s just [about] keeping the momentum on Sunday [when United visit Aston Villa in the Premier League].”

  • Rice salutes ‘incredible night for West Ham academy’ after debutants shine

Meanwhile, Moyes heaped praise on his young side, particularly the starting duo of Scarles and Mubama.

“Hopefully, we are getting future pressure on the boys in the first team,” he told BT Sport. “All the boys played really well. We could have scored more goals.

“I thought Oliver Scarles played exceptionally well. Divin got a goal; I know it is being classed as an own goal, but he is a young centre forward, and you could see how much it meant for him to score.

“They have a great spirit in the Under-23s. There is a great spirit at West Ham and everyone is pleased for these young players.

“Everybody wants an opportunity, you just hope they can grab it and I thought both of them did tonight.”

  • FIFA urges Black Stars to focus on World Cup and not ‘ideological or political battles’

World’s governing football body, FIFA has written to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) boss Kurt Okraku telling Black Stars to focus on World Cup and not to meddle in ‘ideological or political battles’.

FIFA has sent a message to all 32 teams competing at the global showpiece including Ghana to tell them the time has come to focus on the football.

The tournament, which starts in Qatar on 20 November, has been surrounded by controversy.

Qatar has been criticised for its stance on same-sex relationships, its human rights record and its treatment of migrant workers.

Peaceful protests have been planned by some players. England skipper Harry Kane and nine other captains of European teams will be wearing ‘One Love’ armbands.

Denmark will also wear “toned-down” shirts to protest against Qatar.

Black Stars make a return to the tournament after missing out on the 2018 edition in Russia and have been drawn in Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.

Ghana will take on Portugal in their first game on November 24 before playing South Korea and Uruguay on November 28 and December 2 respectively.

Black Stars will play Switzerland in an International friendly on November 17, before travelling to Qatar for the World Cup.

  • The facts behind Barcelona legend’s Pique retirement

Gerard Pique’s retirement brings one of the most distinguished careers in Barcelona and Spain footballing history to a conclusion.

Pique won eight LaLiga titles and the Champions League three times with Barca, while helping his national team lift their first World Cup in 2010 and the European Championship two years later.

The Los Cules great has decided to call it quits at the age of 35 after Barca’s next match, against Almeria on Saturday, having turned out for his hometown club over 600 times.

A number of high-profile names have hailed Pique since the announcement, including the likes of Patrick Kluivert and Fabio Cannavaro, while former centre-back partner Carles Puyol called it a “privilege” to play alongside him.

    A Barca legend

Pique will retire as a Camp Nou legend, with only four players featuring more times for Barca than his (614), those being Lionel Messi (778), Xavi (767), Sergio Busquets (694) and Andres Iniesta (674) – all of whom helped form part of the dominant Barca team in the 2010s alongside Pique.

Pique started in Barca’s youth ranks but left for Manchester United in 2004, where he won the Premier League and Champions League in the 2007-08 season.

However, Pique returned to Barca in 2008 and has won 422 of his 614 games in all competitions since.

He lifted 30 titles with the club in what was the most successful period in Barca’s history.

A rock for his national team

Pique also made his mark at international level, earning 102 caps for Spain between 2009 and 2018 and becoming one of just 13 players to feature 100 or more times for La Roja.

Pique played every minute of the final as they overcame the Netherlands 1-0 after extra time to lift their first World Cup in 2010, before Spain went on to win the 2012 Euros by routing Italy 4-0 in the final.

He scored five goals for Spain, all against different opponents, including three in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.

    European great

Only Sergio Ramos (135) made more Champions League appearances as a defender than Pique (128), while he scored the joint-most goals for a defender in the competition with Roberto Carlos (16).

Perhaps his best Champions League season was the 2008-09 campaign when he finished with the most ball recoveries (90), while only Xavi (967) completed more passes than him (695).

There are just four players with more Champions League titles, Karim Benzema, Dani Carvajal, Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo, all of whom are on five.

  • Puyol salutes Pique as Barca star announces decision to retire

Carles Puyol paid tribute to former Barcelona and Spain team-mate Gerard Pique, stating “few have defended the Barca shirt like you” after the centre-back announced he is to retire.

Pique will call time on his glittering playing career after Saturday’s LaLiga clash with Almeria at Camp Nou, with his envious list of honours including eight domestic titles and three Champions Leagues crowns.

He endured a somewhat sour ending to his lengthy association with the Blaugrana, though, after falling down the pecking order under Xavi, while he was booed by home fans during the recent win over Villarreal.

Puyol partnered Pique in the heart of defence during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history, including the treble-winning season of 2008-09, as well as Spain’s World Cup glory in 2010.

The former Barca captain wrote on Twitter: “Thank you for everything, Geri. I am in shock. Many have been unfair to you, few have defended the Barca shirt like you.

“I can always say that I played alongside you, it was a privilege. I love you friend.”

Pique has racked up a whopping 615 appearances for Barcelona across all competitions, with his tally only bettered by Lionel Messi (778), Xavi (767), Sergio Busquets (694) and Andres Iniesta (674).

The World Cup and European Championship winner also earned 102 international caps, making him one of just 13 players to reach triple figures for Spain.

  • City condemn ‘vile’ racist abuse towards Lewis by Sevilla supporters

Manchester City have condemned “vile” racist abuse from Sevilla fans towards Rico Lewis during Wednesday’s Champions League clash, stating “we will not tolerate any discrimination”.

The 17-year-old Lewis’s memorable Champions League debut at Etihad Stadium was marred by racist abuse after City confirmed two arrests had been made amid a continued club and police investigation.

“Manchester City strongly condemns the racist abuse that Rico Lewis was subject to from Sevilla supporters at yesterday’s match,” a club statement read on Thursday.

“We understand that two arrests have been made and are continuing to work with Sevilla and GMP [Greater Manchester Police] to investigate this matter.

“We will not tolerate discrimination of any kind at our stadium and will be offering our full support to Rico following these vile incidents.”

Sevilla said disciplinary action will be taken should the two culprits be proven guilty.

“Sevilla strongly condemn the behaviour of two fans in the away section of Manchester City’s stadium, who were identified and accused of allegedly behaving in a racist manner towards Manchester City player Rico Lewis,” a statement from the LaLiga said.

“Sevilla are awaiting official confirmation of these facts, of which they have been made aware by Manchester City, and if these are proven, the two fans will be removed from the list of members.

“Sevilla would like to point out that there have never been any racist or xenophobic episodes at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium and that its fans have always been committed to the fight against racism.”

Lewis scored the equaliser in the comeback 3-1 victory over Sevilla and became the youngest player in history to score on his Champions League debut.

  • 2024 elections: Dr Kwabena Duffour formally declares interest in NDC flagbearership

Former Finance Minister Dr Kwabena Duffuor has made it official that he will be seeking to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as its flagbearer in the 2024 election.

It had been in the rumour mill for a while now, but Dr Duffuor’s action cements the claims.

According to Dr Duffuor, he is prepared to contest for the flagbearship position of the party when nominations are opened.

He posted on Facebook on Thursday that “Today, I officially announce my intention to contest for the flagbearership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) anytime the party opens nominations. I will offer myself once again to serve the land of my birth with humility and sacrifice when given the chance to do so,”

While rumours have been rife of Dr. Duffuor joining the race, he had avoided openly declaring his intention to run.

In an interview in November, 2021, he indicated that his main objective at the moment was to help the opposition NDC build a formidable party.

“The NDC has not opened any nomination for Presidency. All that we are doing now is to build a very strong party. So when we get there, we will know.

“Let’s get to the river before we cross. We are not there yet, when we get there, we will cross and then we will know. But right now the focus is on the party and not on any individual. Soon, the party will elect its leaders but for now, we are not there yet,” he had said.

According to him, having a resilient political party remains the only way the opposition party can emerge victorious in the 2024 general elections.

The former Finance Minister therefore cautioned people against pitching him against former President John Mahama.

However, the tables have turned today, as he has publicly declared his interest.

  • Govt unlikely to present 2023 Budget due to IMF talks – Majority leader

Majority leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has hinted at a postponement of the 2023 Budget Statement and the Economic Policy reading scheduled to take place on November 15, 2022.

According to the Majority leader, a new date may have to be set as the government is yet to conclude its negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Speaking to the media, the Suame Member of Parliament noted that a delegation from the Fund is expected in the country in the next few weeks to continue its negotiations.

“But if you want to do tidy work, you may be required to have some space to be able to do a tidy job. Because as you all know, these are not normal times. Nothing should be done which will eventually become wishy-washy. They want to have the best to be able to uplift us from where we are as a country. And that being the case, if we want to do a thorough job, I think there will be too much pressure if it has to be done on the 15th,” he said on Thursday, November 3, 2022.

“We want more time to interrogate the principles underpinning the budget,” Mr Osei-Kyei-Mensah added.

He posited that this action will not be in breach of the procedure since the constitution provides November 30 as the deadline for the presentation of the budget statement.

However, Section 21(3), of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016, ACT 971, states that “the Minister shall, on behalf of the President, lay before Parliament not later than the 15th of November of each financial year, estimates of the revenues and expenditure of the Government, the annual budget, for the ensuing financial year.”

Meanwhile, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who doubles as the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, will engage Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta on the possible new date and revert with a communique on whatever conclusion is reached.

    Budget thrown out of gear

President Akufo-Addo admitted on Sunday night that the 2022 budget has already been thrown out of gear.

While addressing the nation on the state of the economy, the President said he is aware of the increase in the cost of living in the country and the economic difficulties facing Ghanaians.

According to him, the economic woes have rendered the country’s 2022 budget useless.

“For us, in Ghana, our reality is that our economy is in great difficulty. The budget drawn for the 2022 fiscal year has been thrown out of gear, disrupting our balance of payments and debt sustainability, and further exposing the structural weaknesses of our economy.

“We are in a crisis, I do not exaggerate when I say so. I cannot find an example in history when so many malevolent forces have come together at the same time,” the President said.

  • IMF deal likely to create labour retrenchment, social instability – Foreign Minister

Ghana’s dealings with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) may have an adverse impact on the economy and the wellbeing of some Ghanaians.

According to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, some employees in the public sector can lose their jobs due to some conditions the IMF would present to provide Ghana an economic recovery programme.

In a published article on November 3, 2022, the Minister wrote “we have to either impose IMF-guided austerity, potentially leading to labour retrenchment and accompanying social instability, as witnessed in Argentina and elsewhere, or home-grown yet equally tough decisions to satisfy the markets and, hopefully, pave the way back to a functioning economy.”

She further described Ghana’s current position to go for an IMF support against a domestic programme for robust growth as “a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea.”

The Foreign Minister strongly believes that the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has aggravated the country’s economic woes.

We cannot forget that before the invasion of Ukraine, COVID-19 had exposed the lack of resilience of the economies in which the majority of the global population live. In fact, the war in Ukraine exacerbated the harsh effects of the downturn many countries were already experiencing, deepening poverty, unemployment and food insecurity,” she said.

Ghana formally reached out to the IMF in July after its domestic initiatives, such as the Electronic Transaction Levy (e-levy) to help restore the economy faced severe challenges. In September, engagements between the Fund and a government delegation commenced.

During that period, some Ghanaians and institutions opposed government’s decision to seek support from the IMF as done by previous governments.

The Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) stated that the plight of Ghanaians would worsen following an IMF deal. According to the Finance Minister, an economic programme from the IMF is to help the country stay afloat in the interim. Ghana hopes to receive $3 billion from the Fund.

Meanwhile, renowned economist, Kwame Pianim, has revealed that Ghana’s negotiations with the IMF are not going well as expected.

He noted that the IMF is keenly waiting for the President’s definite pronouncement before they come in to support.

“The IMF negotiations are not going well. I know this for a fact. What the IMF is waiting for is a bold credible pronouncement from the president as he did over [the] Covid-19.

Below is the full statement by the Foreign Minister captioned “We Are Running Out of Time

I was told many years ago about a common refrain in newsrooms: “If it bleeds, it leads”.  In other words, the bloodier an event, the more prominent its place in the newspaper or bulletin. I believe this axiom still holds true today. It explains why the catastrophic sights and sounds – the bleeding – in Ukraine is top of mind for the world. And justifiably so.

However, as Ghana assumes the Presidency of the United Nations Security Council in November, the world cannot afford to focus solely on events in Ukraine, its impact on the living conditions of people everywhere notwithstanding.

We cannot forget that before the invasion of Ukraine, COVID-19 exposed the lack of resilience in the economies in which the majority of the global population lives. In fact, the war in Ukraine exacerbated the harsh effects of the downturn many countries were already experiencing, deepening poverty, unemployment and food insecurity.

We cannot forget either that the UN Security Council faced a leadership crisis in finding better ways to respond to threats to international peace and security, as the nature of those threats were, themselves, changing. Africa, for instance, has become the epicentre of terrorism. Meanwhile, in the countries where the UN maintains its signature peacekeeping missions, some of the host countries have chosen, instead, to engage third parties, sometimes in conflict with the operations of UN peacekeepers.

It is clear that the ways in which the Security Council approaches the mandate for international peace and security ought to change if we are to have sustainable peace, which is a prerequisite for achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) by 2030. Right now we are running out of time in transforming the lives of people and saving our planet.

At the UN, Security Council reforms are often seen only in terms of expanding the permanent membership and power of veto to make the council more representative of all of the peoples of the world. Those reforms are essential and necessary. But we believe that it is equally important to look at another area of reforms that would enable peace to serve the needs of ordinary people for resilience and good quality of life.

In this, we are inspired by the example of the second Secretary‐General of the UN, Dag Hammarskjold, who had an innovative approach to the possibilities of the UN and its Charter and is credited with the introduction of peacekeeping. The bold act of adopting a General Assembly Resolution on November 7, 1956, which launched the first peacekeeping operation in history, the UN Emergency Force in the Middle East (UNEF), at a time when it was urgently needed, should inspire us in our time to act equally boldly because circumstances have changed.

Like Hammarskjold, we must recognize that “the purposes of the Charter (are)  fixed and binding, but the working methods of the Organisation must be flexible and innovative”.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana and I are calling on the Council to consider that time has come for another departure from the norm as Hammarskjöld did when UNEF was established.

As my country Ghana prepares to preside over two high-level debates of the Council, we want to focus, like a laser beam, on the security gap and the need for a new and innovative template for success. That template should consider the factors that make peacekeeping operations almost permanent, and why individuals and communities become susceptible to radicalisation and recruitment as terrorists, driving the new face of threats to international peace and security.

In the Sahel and coastal West Africa, the countries that were the most successful in reaching striking distance of the SDGs, especially on poverty reduction and education, now find themselves struggling, as poorer countries rather shoulder the worst impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, Climate Change and conflict in Europe. High fiscal deficits, escalating debt and downturns in economic activity are pushing us out of the bond markets at a time when inequality soars and unemployment and underemployment of millions are turning frustration into hopelessness. Increasingly, even some of the middle classes in Africa and other developing countries are beginning to lose faith in the democratic systems they fought so hard to establish.

The road back to robust growth, which Ghana and a number of African countries experienced successively in the years before COVID-19 struck, is currently a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea. We have to either impose IMF-guided austerity, potentially leading to labour retrenchment and accompanying social instability, as witnessed in Argentina and elsewhere, or home-grown yet equally tough decisions to satisfy the markets and, hopefully, pave the way back to a functioning economy. The harsh sacrifices required, themselves, have become a source of instability and an invitation to malign actors.

In the Sahel, climate-induced insecurity, poverty, high illiteracy rates and education that neither teaches skills nor a culture of peace and non-violence (SDG Target 4.7), youth unemployment and the absence of the State in large swathes of territory have created the environment in which terrorists thrive and undermine the effectiveness of the kinetic military operations to root them out.

It is clear that the critical need to fill the security gap brought on by economic and other root causes of conflict should be a priority for promoting and maintaining international peace and security. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has been insistent on the need for funding the entire peace continuum, including increasing resources for programmatic financing, and for a mechanism for fighting terrorism in Africa.

The Council can no longer turn a blind eye to the accumulating evidence before us. That means ensuring that UN Security Council-mandated peace support missions or counter-terrorism have a balanced approach to both the military and civil components, with as many resources devoted to building community resilience, access to good quality education and training, and mitigating climate impacts and reclaiming land and water bodies on which communities depend.

It means standing with other organs of the UN to advocate for a new model of development cooperation that reinforces the capacity of developing countries to deepen their development resilience. I know that these may not make for easy headlines but we must bring attention to, and act on them as a matter of preventive urgency.

It is time for bold thinking and bolder action or we shall simply run out of time, leaving us with neither peace nor development – except bloodier headlines.

  • Trotro drivers defy GPRTU directive, increase transport fares by over 40%

Public transport operators have once again defied the Ghana Private Road Transport Union’s (GPRTU) directive to increase fares by 19 percent to cushion themselves from the high cost of fuel products.

Commuters are now bearing the brunt of the incessant rise in the prices of fuel products as a whopping 40 percent increment, at least, has been slapped on fares, the Independent Ghana can confirm.

Some bus terminals that are observing this gross misconduct include Lapaz bus terminal and Circle bus terminal.

Before the GPRTU’s 19 percent increment, a trip from Lapaz to Mile 7 cost GH3.60. Following the 19 percent implementation on October 29, 2022, the fare rose to GH4.50.

On November 1, the fare was adjusted again and a trip which cost GH4.50 is now GH4.95, nearly GH5, the amount transport operators are currently demanding.

A trip from Lapaz to Mile has increased by GH1.40, representing a 40 percent increment.

Again, a trip from Taifa to Mile 7 used to go for GH3, but after a 19 percent increment was implemented, the fare increased to GH3.80, instead of GH3.60, to reflect an actual 19 per cent increment.

On November 3, transport operators charged GH5 for a trip from Taifa to Mile 7, representing a 67% increase.

A critical look at the Circle bus terminal, shows that transport fares have also increased by 40 percent as observed at the aforementioned.

Prior to the GPRTU’s directive, moving from Pigfarm to Circle cost GH3.50. With a 19 per cent implementation, the trip should cost GH4.20, however, public transport operators are currently charging GH5.

Commuters moving to Dome from Madina used to pay GHS5.50 before GPRTU announced an increase in transport fares. Transport operators now charged GHS7 for the same trip, violating the 19 percent increment directive.

At a 19 percent rate, a trip from Madina to Dome should cost GH6.50. Currently, commuters are being charged GHS8.50, representing a whopping 55 percent increase.

It has been observed that the new fare has been pinned on the Ghana Private Road Transport Union.

This debunks comments by the GPRTU that public transport operators are implementing the new agreed fares.

Ghanaians who have fallen victim to this exploitation have registered their displeasure on social media, and have called on the GPRTU to intervene.

Prior to the recent increase in transport fares, the GPRTU, owing to the incessant rise in price of fuel products, demanded a 40 percent increment from the government, but after engagements, the Union and the Transport Ministry settled on a 19 percent increment.

Currently, a litre of petrol is going for about GHS18, and that for diesel, close to GHS24.

  • LaLiga chief makes Ligue 1 jibe as he urges Messi to make Barca return

Lionel Messi is “missed by football” because at Paris Saint-Germain he does not have the same audience as at Barcelona, according to LaLiga president Javier Tebas.

Messi left Barca in 2020 after the club’s financial issues led to a significantly reduced salary limit in LaLiga, thus preventing them re-signing him after his contract expired.

He moved to PSG and, after a somewhat underwhelming first season on an individual level, Messi is thriving again this season.

But Tebas’ perception is Messi is wasted in Ligue 1 because it does not have the same global audience as LaLiga and Barcelona.

Speaking at the Sports Summits organised by Argentinian newspaper Ole, Tebas said: “I think Messi is not only missed in LaLiga, he is missed by football because the French league is what it is, right?

“I think that no matter how many [superstars] are at PSG, Messi is followed much less than when he was at Barcelona. Let’s hope he has a great World Cup, because there we will all be able to see him again.

“I don’t see all the fans watching PSG against Nantes, I don’t see it. With Barca it’s the opposite.”

Messi’s future has become a hot topic again in recent weeks, with speculation beginning to swirl regarding his next destination.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has been linked with a move to MLS side Inter Miami, PSG want to renew his contract, and Barcelona are reportedly aiming to bring him back to Camp Nou.

Tebas could not offer any insight, but he was unequivocal in what he thinks Messi should do.

“I don’t know if Messi will have one last show at Barca, that will depend on him,” he continued.

“Hopefully he will come back. Above all it would also be good for him to return to Spanish football, especially to the team that has always been the team that birthed him.

  • England and Scotland set for 150th anniversary clash to celebrate first international

England and Scotland will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first international football match with a repeat fixture at Glasgow’s Hampden Park in 2023.

The two teams played out the inaugural game, officially considered the maiden encounter in the sport’s international history by FIFA, on November 30, 1872.

As part of the celebrations marking 150 years since that 0-0 draw at Hamilton Crescent in Glasgow, they will face off in the same city next year on September 12.

“Any meeting with Scotland is always special,” England manager Gareth Southgate said.

“Ourselves and Scotland are the oldest of rivals, and passions are sure to be high at Hampden.

“But this milestone is much bigger than our two nations, as it is also an opportunity to celebrate 150 years of international football.”

The neighbouring nations met in the group stage of Euro 2020, with that match finishing goalless. Their last encounter at Hampden Park came in 2017, when Harry Kane struck in injury time in a 2-2 draw.

“This fixture is enshrined in history,” Scotland manager Steve Clarke added. “I will be proud to lead our team out at Hampden as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of our national game.

“This next chapter of the oldest rivalry in football will be a special occasion for our players and fans, especially after the recent experience at Wembley during Euro 2020.”

Alongside the announcement, the Football Association (FA) confirmed England will play their Euro 2024 qualifier against North Macedonia at Manchester United’s Old Trafford on June 19.

While Scotland failed to qualify for the upcoming World Cup, England are making their preparations for Qatar, with Southgate set to name his squad by November 10.

The Three Lions will take on Iran, the United States and Wales in the group stage.

  • Arteta ‘proud’ to be at Arsenal amid Barcelona links

Mikel Arteta insists he is “extremely happy and proud” to lead Arsenal despite reports linking him with Barcelona as he praised Xavi’s “phenomenal” work at Camp Nou.

Arsenal have won 10 of their 12 Premier League games this season to lead Manchester City by two points at the summit, and they will top their Europa League group if they beat Zurich on Thursday.

The Gunners’ excellent form has seen Arteta linked with a move to Barcelona, where Xavi is facing mounting pressure after failing to lead the Blaugrana to the Champions League’s last 16.

However, Arteta remains fully focused on his current role, saying: “What I can say is I am extremely proud and happy to be where I am now. I think Barcelona are on a really good path now.

“I think they have a phenomenal coach, a coach who has been an absolute legend at that club and has lifted the whole place, and you have to be very respectful of that.”

Despite Arsenal’s strong results, some onlookers have expressed worries about the form of Gabriel Jesus, who has not scored since a 3-1 derby win over Tottenham at the start of last month.

However, Jesus claimed two assists in Sunday’s 5-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest, as well as playing a key role in the first of Reiss Nelson’s two goals, and Arteta sees no cause for concern.

“If he makes three assists in a game, I don’t think he has to make many adjustments,” Arteta said. “I will be really happy if he is able to do that every game.”

  • Fully-fledged trial for Aisha Huang begins next week, 1st witness to be called for cross-examination

The trial of Aisha Huang will begin on the 9th of November 2022, an Accra High Court has ruled. Per this ruling, witnesses in the case will individually be called to be cross-examined in the courtroom.

This follows an order by the court, directing the Attorney General to submit the full complement of the evidence it intends to rely on for the prosecution of the accused.

According to the Presiding Judge, Lydia Marfo, the state will call its first witness; Reuben Ransford Aborabora for cross-examination on the 9th of November.

He will subsequently re-appear on 14th November 2022.

Reuben Ransford Aborabora, the second witness; David Essien will appear on the 16th, 17th, and 21st.

The third witness; Nana Safo Prempeh will appear on the 23rd of this month and subsequently on the 28th and 29th.

On the 30th and 1st of December; the fourth witness; Matthew Kwabena Abotsi will have to appear.

In the meantime, Aisha Huang will continue to remain in police custody.

    Background:

Ms. Huang in 2017 was charged for undertaking small-scale mining operations contrary to Section 99 (1) of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703).

She was also charged with providing mine support services without valid registration with the Minerals Commission, contrary to Section 59 and 99 (2) of the Minerals and Mining Act; and also charged with illegal employment of foreign nationals (in breach of section 24 of the Immigration Act and regulation 18 of the Immigration Regulations).

Her case was however discontinued and she was deported. Her deportation meant the state discontinued the trial against her.

She however found her way back into the country leading to her recent arrest. An Accra Circuit court last week remanded Aisha Huang and three other Chinese nationals into custody to reappear on charges of illegal gold mining and trading.

Her recent arrest is on the same issues of illegal mining.

  • Tudor reveals confusion as Marseille crash out of Europe with final kick

Marseille head coach Igor Tudor revealed his players could not hear his instructions amid the last-gasp chaos that cost them a Europa League spot in Tuesday’s 2-1 Champions League loss to Tottenham.

The nine-time French champions were set to qualify for Europe’s second tier via third spot in Group D with scores locked at 1-1 entering stoppage time, with Sporting CP trailing 2-1 against Eintracht Frankfurt in the other game.

But Marseille ambitiously pushed forward chasing a winner, which would have seen them move above Spurs and advance to the Champions League last-16, rather than conserve third spot.

That move backfired as their backline was badly exposed when Tottenham broke clear in the 95th minute with Harry Kane laying off for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s winner, knocking Marseille out of Europe with the final kick of the game.

Tudor was seen running on to the field and attempting to bark orders at his players in the moments prior to the goal.

“They didn’t hear, because there was so much noise,” Tudor told RMC Sport.

“I told them to stay back, not to push on, but they didn’t hear. There was confusion in the last minute. It wasn’t about results, it was about telling them to stay put, not to go all up.”

OM defender Chancel Mbemba, who had put the hosts ahead before half-time, labelled the situation as a “lack of communication”.

“On the field, we didn’t know, but on the bench, people knew,” he said.

“It’s a lack of communication. We have the desire to push until the end, but we didn’t know. It’s a mistake.”

  • Carragher praises ‘scary’ Nunez’s major impact for Liverpool

Darwin Nunez can be a “scary” presence for Liverpool but still needs to grow his overall game, says Reds great Jamie Carragher.

The Uruguay international got on the scoresheet in the Premier League side’s 2-0 win over Napoli in the Champions League on Tuesday, for his sixth goal of the season across all competitions.

Nunez had a tough start to life at Anfield with a red card against Crystal Palace seeing him serve an early season ban, but is starting to show his potential on Merseyside.

With more attempts on a per-90-minute basis (6.7) in the English top-flight this term than anyone else, Carragher suggests the stats back the influence the 23-year-old can have on matches.

“It’s really interesting watching Nunez,” he told CBS. “He comes on and he makes a huge impact. He hasn’t set the world alight, he hasn’t done what [Erling] Haaland’s done and people would’ve expected more for the price-tag.

“But when you look at his minutes on the pitch and how many goals he’s scored per minute, his numbers are scary. He’s actually made a huge impact.”

Carragher feels that Nunez is yet to fully master his all-around game though, adding: “But there’s still something not quite there, where Jurgen Klopp is going to play him every single game.

“I think he’s got [similarities to] Fernando Torres. He’s got that power, physically, to knock defenders off, that blistering pace. But at times, maybe technically, [he is] not the best in terms of general play.”

Nunez has posted a 0.6 goal yield every 90 minutes in the Premier League this term, a ratio bettered by just seven players, while only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland has a superior non-penalty xG than his 0.76.

  • Supersub Harper scores twice as Eastleigh sink Scunthorpe

Substitute Vincent Harper scored both goals as Eastleigh extended their unbeaten home record to eight matches in a 2-0 win against Scunthorpe.

Harper struck within a minute of stepping off the bench in the second half and added another in the last minute to help lift the Spitfires up to ninth in the table.

After a goalless first half, Eastleigh twice went close to breaking the deadlock just before the hour when Andrew Boyce’s header skimmed the crossbar and Michael Kelly’s effort from a tight angle was saved.

But the home side’s pressure told in the 68th minute. Harper drove forward into space before taking aim and curling a superb effort into the top corner.

Scunthorpe pressed forward in search of an equaliser, but Harper got on the end of a swift counter-attack for his second to seal Eastleigh’s victory and extend the Iron’s winless run on the road this season.

  • Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus delighted to score in win over Rangers

Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus has expressed his happiness after scoring his 4th goal in this season’s UEFA Champions League against Rangers on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old continued his fine form to the season as he found the back of the net and provided an assist to help the Dutch giants defeat Rangers 3-1.

Within four minutes, Kudus set up Berghuis for the first goal. He found the back of the net in the 29th minute to give the away team a 2-0 lead.

Rangers pulled one back in the 87th minute through James Tavernier who scored from the penalty spot but Ajax added their third goal in the encounter through Portuguese youngster Francisco Conceição.

“I am very happy and most importantly we got the win, so big credit to all the team. The goal happened so fast but I just moved the ball and struck it with my right foot.”

“Yeah it deflected but as a striker that’s what I need,” Kudus said after the game.

The Ghanaian played full throttle for Ajax in the false nine position. Ajax have six points after six games in Group A and will play in the UEFA Europa League.

Kudus scored 10 goals and registered two assists for Ajax in 18 games across all competitions this season.

  • $8 monthly fee for Twitter blue tick – Elon Musk says

Elon Musk has said Twitter will charge $8 (£7) monthly to Twitter users who want a blue tick by their name indicating a verified account.

As part of changes after a $44bn (£38bn) takeover of the social media site, Mr Musk said it was “essential to defeat spam/scam”.

A blue tick mark next to a username – normally for high-profile figures – is currently free.

The move could make it harder to identify reliable sources, say critics.

Mr Musk, the world’s richest person, added that paid users would have priority in replies and searches, and half as many advertisements.

“Power to the people! Blue for $8/month,” the billionaire said on Twitter, criticising the old method of blue tick verification as a “lords and peasants system”.

Twitter’s former method of verifying users for a blue tick included a short online application form, and was reserved for those whose identities were targets for impersonation, such as celebrities, politicians and journalists.

The company introduced the system in 2009, after it faced a lawsuit accusing it of not doing enough to prevent imposter accounts.

But Mr Musk is facing a hefty challenge as he works to overhaul Twitter’s business, which has not posted a profit in years.

He has said he wants to reduce Twitter’s reliance on advertising, even as some companies have grown concerned about advertising on the site under his leadership.

General Motors – a rival of Mr Musk’s electric car company Tesla – said last week it was suspending advertising on the site.

Meanwhile, some other major brands have more quietly put a temporary halt to advertising on the platform as they wait to see how Mr Musk’s changes play out, a media buyer for a leading advertising firm told the BBC.

On Monday, one of the world’s biggest advertising companies, IPG, advised its clients to suspend Twitter adverts for a week, citing a need for more clarity on the Twitter’s plans to ensure “trust and safety” on the platform. IPG is given billions of pounds per year, by some of the world’s biggest brands, to handle their marketing budgets.

The charge for blue tick privileges drew scepticism after original reports that said the charge could be $20 (£18) monthly.

Many on the platform echoed the statement of author Stephen King, who wrote in response to reports of changes that instead Twitter “should pay me”.

Mr Musk wrote to Mr King saying, “We need to pay the bills somehow!”

  • Marseille 1-2 Tottenham: Lenglet and Hojbjerg send Spurs through

Goals from Clement Lenglet and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg saw Tottenham come from behind to advance to the Champions League knockout stages with a 2-1 victory at Marseille on Tuesday.

Spurs knew a point in France would be enough to send them through, but Chancel Mbemba’s powerful strike put them a goal down at half-time.

However, Lenglet nodded home from Ivan Perisic’s set-piece shortly after the break before Hojbjerg smashed home in injury time to seal Spurs’ place in the next round.

The victory means Spurs finish as Group D winners as they reach the knockout stages of the competition for the first time since 2019-20.

The hosts started well in front of their vociferous fans, Alexis Sanchez nearly giving them an early lead with a header that flew just past the post before Hugo Lloris punched away a fierce drive from the former Arsenal forward.

Largely pinned back by the hosts, Spurs were dealt another blow when Son Heung-min was forced off with a head injury, before Lloris was needed again to beat away a Jordan Veretout half-volley.

Mbemba gave Marseille the advantage in first-half injury time with a towering header into the bottom left corner, giving Lloris no chance as Spurs’ marking left a lot to be desired.

Spurs came out of the interval firing, and they were level in the 54th minute when Lenglet nodded Perisic’s excellent free-kick delivery into the back of the net.

Amine Harit’s long-range effort fizzed just over the crossbar as the French side pushed for a winner that would have sent them through, though Hojbjerg rattled the woodwork at the other end.

Sead Kolasinac missed a great opportunity when he headed wide late on, and Hojbjerg’s powerful injury-time finish off the post as Spurs countered put his side through as group winners.

What does it mean? Spurs battle back from difficult first half

Marseille were full value for their lead at the break. Buoyed by their loud home support, they had seven shots to Spurs’ two in the first half as the English side held just 30.5 per cent of the possession in the opening 45 minutes.

Antonio Conte’s side desperately needed to improve after the break, and they certainly did that with an impressive second-half spell that saw Lenglet equalise. They defended resolutely, before Hojbjerg won the game with his right-footed finish in the dying seconds.

Lenglet proves his worth at both ends

Lenglet’s crucial header to level the game will get the headlines, but his defensive performance might have been just as impressive.

The former Barcelona centre-back finished with the joint-most tackles (four) and clearances (four) for his team, while also winning six of his eight duels.

    Son’s injury a big worry

While Tottenham will be delighted with their hard-fought victory, it was not all positive news as star player Son was forced off with a head injury.

In obvious discomfort as he was helped off the field, the incident will spark fears over his World Cup availability for South Korea, with their opening match against Uruguay in just 23 days.

    What’s next?

Both teams are back in domestic action on Sunday, with Spurs hosting Liverpool while Marseille will play Lyon.

  • Coach Jimmy Cobblah reveals why King Faisal are struggling in GPL this season

Head coach of King Faisal, Jimmy Cobblah has lifted the lid on why his side are struggling this season after losing again to regional rivals Asante Kotoko on match week four.

The Kumasi-based outfit have lost all four games played this season in the Premier League and currently lie bottom of the table with no point.

Kotoko defeated King Faisal at the Baba Yara Sports stadium Monday evening. The Porcupine Warriors scored in either half as they added to the woes of their city rivals.

“Most of them have not played in the Premiership and this is where you are playing the champions Asante Kotoko…we are still believing that we will manage what we have until the (transfer) window opens. Inexperience is killing us,” he said.

King Faisal will take on Bibiani Gold Stars  on match week five of the Ghana Premier League on Sunday, November 6,2022.\

  • Chesterfield hit back to beat Gateshead

Liam Mandeville fired a second-half winner to earn Chesterfield a 2-1 home win against Gateshead.

Greg Olley’s long-range first-half effort for Gateshead was quickly cancelled out by Joe Quigley’s header before Mandeville curled home a brilliant second for Chesterfield early in the second period.

Gateshead took an 18th-minute lead through forward Olley’s thunderbolt from outside the area, but Chesterfield equalised three minutes later when Quigley headed home Mandeville’s cross.

Spireites’ Armando Dobra blazed over from three yards out following another Mandeville cross before an off-the-ball incident saw Gateshead defender Carl Magnay escape with a booking after Jeff King went down in the box.

Mandeville fired the winner soon after the restart following King’s free-kick, which had rebounded off the wall.

  • Jose Peseiro: Nigeria coach’s salary goes unpaid since taking charge

Jose Peseiro, the coach of Nigeria’s national football team, has not received a single pay cheque from his employers, six months after being appointed to lead the Super Eagles.

The 62-year-old, who took charge of the team in May, has however yet to make an official complaint to Nigeria’s Football Federation (NFF) about the non-payment of his salary.

In response, the financially stricken NFF, which receives its funding from the country’s government, says it has come up with a plan on how to settle the arrears.

The NFF already owes money to the Portuguese’s predecessor, Gernot Rohr, and to players from its national teams.

“We’ve heard from Mr Peseiro’s representatives that he only received his allowances and bonuses, which is very disturbing,” a prominent NFF official told BBC Sport Africa on Tuesday.

“His salary is being paid by the Sports Ministry but we’ve quickly made an alternative arrangement, in conjunction with the Ministry, to sort the salary payments this week.”

Nigeria’s sports ministry, which took on the responsibility to pay Peseiro, has blamed the delay on processes for receiving funds from the federal government. A special adviser to sports minister Sunday Dare says the coach will be paid “very soon”.

“The issue of Peseiro’s payment will be resolved soon with the understanding of the federation and the coach,” Toyin Ibitoye told the BBC.

“Everything is being worked on and we are quite confident that very soon it will be sorted.”

Since missing out on a place at the 2022 World Cup in Africa’s play-offs in March, Nigeria have won their only two competitive games under Peseiro, who previously led Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.

The Super Eagles beat Sierra Leone 2-1 and thrashed Sao Tome e Principe 10-0 to ensure a perfect start in qualifying as they seek a spot at the next Africa Cup of Nations Cup in Ivory Coast, scheduled to be held in early 2024.

    • Payment issues persist in Nigeria

    Former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr

In May a Fifa tribunal ordered the NFF to pay former coach Gernot Rohr about $380,000

It is not the first time coaches have been caught in the web of unpaid salaries in Nigeria.

The list of coaches who have had to go without pay for a while is lengthy, including Christian Chukwu, Augustine Eguavoen, Samson Siasia, Sunday Oliseh, Florence Omagbemi and the late Shaibu Amodu and Stephen Keshi.

The NFF is still indebted to Peseiro’s predecessor Rohr as the football authority continues to pay off the Franco-German and also owes outstanding bonuses to players from both the men and women’s senior national teams.

Super Eagles players are unhappy over unpaid bonuses and allowances dating back to 2021, while the Super Falcons are still waiting for the NFF and Sports Ministry to settle outstanding debts from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) and other training camps.

In July, the women’s squad boycotted training before their Wafcon third-place play-off against Zambia over the non-payment of both bonuses and allowances.

There are strong suggestions of discontent about the arrears within the squad, who recently engaged on 2023 Women’s World Cup preparatory tours of both Japan and the United States.

“We actually believe the ministry has paid the NFF our Wafcon money but they just refused to make this payment to us,” one of the Super Falcons squad told the BBC.

“Imagine playing two games against the United States and another one in Japan without getting paid a dime. This is very sad.”

Government officials have also acknowledged the debts to the nine-time African champions and the Super Eagles, as well as Peseiro, but say all parties must be patient.

“The process of sorting the payment for the Super Falcons has since been approved and it is with the ministry of finance,” added Ibitoye.

  • Hull 1-3 Middlesborough: Carrick opens account with solid away win

Michael Carrick secured a first victory as Middlesbrough manager with a 3-1 win at Hull, who are reportedly close to recruiting Liam Rosenior as new head coach.

Highly-rated Rosenior, a favourite in East Yorkshire during his playing days, watched from the stands as the Tigers slipped to another home defeat.

Chuba Akpom’s 30th-minute header put Boro in control before Cyrus Christie equalised for the hosts on the hour.

Just when Hull had looked like building momentum, Tobias Figueiredo scored a soft own goal three minutes later.

An away win was then confirmed when Ryan Giles beat Nathan Baxter at his near post with the aid of an 80th-minute deflection off Christie, who was also credited with an own goal.

Rosenior no doubt left the MKM Stadium with plenty to ponder as Hull are just a point above the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone.

It was, though, a significant victory for Carrick as Boro moved up to 18th.

Middlesbrough were good value for three points and had the game’s first big chance after 12 minutes when Isaiah Jones teed up Akpom on the edge of the penalty area. Akpom had time and space but struck wide.

Carrick had identified a weakness on Hull’s left and urged his players to exploit that perceived fallibility.

It worked, too, as Boro scored in an almost identical position to which Jones was earlier seen to good effect.

Tommy Smith’s ferocious deep cross might have tested the resilience of weaker forwards, but Akpom bravely headed home.

Akpom, on loan at Hull from Arsenal in 2015-16, refused to celebrate.

Hull’s plight could have worsened eight minutes later when Giles let one fly from the left.

Baxter spilled a routine save, but he at least had the wherewithal to scoop the ball to safety with his right leg.

Carrick would have been happy at the break but far less impressed by the lackadaisical manner in which Hull were allowed to create their first meaningful chance soon after the restart.

Christie was gifted an easy cross from the right, from which leading scorer Oscar Estupinan did well to volley towards goal. Zack Steffen reacted smartly to tip over the crossbar.

Even weaker defending then led to Christies’s equaliser when he waltzed, unmarked, into the penalty box. The full-back’s shot was scuffed but it took a huge deflection over Steffen’s head.

Carrick will have been furious by such a cheap concession, but it was nothing compared to how Hull interim head coach Andy Dawson must have felt a few minutes later.

The Tigers feebly dealt with Jones’ cross towards the back post, from where Darragh Lenihan headed across goal. Figueiredo lacked the spatial awareness to prevent the ball from rebounding off his legs and into the back of the net.

Hull at least tried to get back into the game, but there was no way back once Christie was adjudged to have scored another own goal.

  • Budget for Black Stars will be made public after 2022 World Cup – Sports Minister

Youth and Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif has said the incentives and other bonuses of the Black Stars will be made public when the team lands in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup.

The packages and budget for the team ahead of the Mundial is yet to be made known by the Ghana Football Association [GFA] and the Sports Ministry.

However, Hon. Ussif speaking in an interview shared that negotiations have been held with the players and a budget has been made available to cater to the team’s needs throughout the tournament.

According to him, the Black Stars’ bonuses will remain the same as what they revived in Brazil eight years ago due to the current economic situation in the country.

“We have negotiated with the Black Stars on all their incentives as far as this World Cup is concerned but once we get to the tournament, we will make it public to Ghanaians,” Mr. Ussif said during the Walk of the Legends event over the weekend.

“Everybody will know how much the Black Stars are going to take. What we have indicated to them is that we are not going to increase what they had in Brazil, so whatever they had in Brazil stays because of the current economic circumstances.

“We have budgeted for the entire tournament, and where we are going to reach will determine how much we are going to spend, so until we finish the tournament we can’t tell you how much we’re going to spend. But we have a budget estimated for the entire tournament.”

Ghana will face a difficult test in Qatar, having been paired alongside Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea in Group H.

The Black Stars will open the tournament against Cristiano Ronaldo and co. before taking on South Korea and will close the group with a clash against Uruguay.

It will be recalled that Ghana’s participation in the 2014 World Cup was blighted by issues of delayed bonuses, with players even threatening a boycott before the country’s final group game against Portugal.

There was also an episode where players clashed with management members and coaches, as the team crashed out at the group stages in Brazil.

Ghana will open camp on November 10 at Abu Dhabi and will take on Switzerland in their final preparatory game on November 17.

  • Billy Waters hat-trick gives Barrow a third successive win

Brilliant Billy Waters hit the first hat-trick of his career as he fired Barrow to a commanding 3-1 victory over rock-bottom Colchester in Sky Bet League Two.

With top scorer Josh Gordon missing through suspension, on-fire Waters stepped up to the mark as the Bluebirds secured a third straight victory for the first time since August.

Twenty-eight-year-old Waters, who scored for a third successive game for the first time in the Football League since December 2016, opened the scoring as he poked home George Ray’s flick-on in the 22nd minute.

It was 2-0 three minutes later as Waters close-range volley beat hapless Sam Hornby.

Colchester defender Tom Eastman cleared Ben Whitfield’s effort off the line on the half-hour mark.

The visitors’ best chance fell to Alan Judge, with Barrow stopper Paul Farman producing a fine save to keep out his 20-yard strike before the break.

Predator Waters completed his treble moments after the interval as he stabbed home captain Niall Canavan’s knock on.

Freddie Sears grabbed a late consolation, his first league goal since the opening day, in stoppage time at Holker Street.

  • 2022 World Cup: Ibrahim Sunday confident Black Stars will progress out of Group H

Ghanaian and African Football legend, Ibrahim Sunday is highly optimistic the Black Stars will qualify from their group at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Black Stars have been drawn in Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.

Ghana will take on Portugal in their first game on November 24 before playing South Korea and Uruguay on November 28 and December 2 respectively.

“They [Black Stars] are going to make it “Insha Allah”. But they cannot make it without our support. So we need everyone’s support,” Sunday said as quoted by Citi Sports.

Black Stars will play Switzerland in an International friendly on November 17, before travelling to Qatar for the World Cup.

The West African country will be making their fourth appearance at the World Cup after missing the previous competition held in Russia four years ago.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup takes place between November 21 and December 18, 2022.

Only three sides from the continent have ever progressed to the quarter-finals; Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002, and Ghana in 2010.

  • Tranmere and Stockport draw a blank at Prenton Park

Stockport extended their unbeaten run to four games with a hard-fought 0-0 Sky Bet League Two draw at Tranmere.

The point keeps Dave Challinor’s side 14th in the table as they look to mount an assault on the play-off places, while Rovers are now 10th after the Prenton Park stalemate.

In a first half which saw both sides struggle to keep the ball on a sodden pitch, Will Collar came closest to breaking the deadlock for the visitors, heading straight at Ross Doohan from close range.

Tranmere’s only response before the break was a tame left-footed effort from Kane Hemmings, whose 20-yard strike was easily collected by Stockport goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe.

The second period mirrored the first as Stockport continued to turn the screw yet failed to make the breakthrough.

Tranmere substitute Paul Lewis had a great chance to win the game for the home side in the second half when he blasted wide from close range.

However, it was the visitors who looked more likely to snatch all three points with Ollie Crankshaw, Callum Camps and Antoni Sarcevic all coming close to a dramatic winner in added time.

  • Minimum wages for professional players to commence in 2023/24 season

Ghana Football Association President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has confirmed that the minimum wages for Professional footballers in the country is expected to take off from next season.

According to him, he  says there have been some discussions with the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana regarding the smooth implementation of the policy.

“Beyond the introduction of the standard player contact, we have also been discussing the introduction of minimum wages for professional players in this country,” Simeon-Okraku said during the dinner with the Legends event on Saturday.

“Again, in my visit to the PFAG, we discussed this policy. This policy will go through the internal process and God willing next season, we should introduce minimum player salaries for professional players in this country.”He added, “I understand that there is an insurance scheme for ex players of our national teams led by the PFAG.”

“We would explore the possibility of ensuring that we have a 100% coverage on health issues for our players.”

  • Salah matches Gerrard record as Liverpool snatch win over Napoli

Mohamed Salah equalled Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool European goals record as his 85th-minute strike paved the way for a 2-0 win over previously undefeated Napoli in the Champions League at Anfield.

When the Serie A leaders’ goalkeeper Alex Meret barely kept substitute Darwin Nunez’s header from crossing the line, the Egypt international followed up to force the ball home.

It was his 41st European goal — all coming in 64 Champions League appearances — and his 12th in all competitions this season.

Midfielder Gerrard’s European goals came over 129 games in the Champions League, Europa League and UEFA Cup including qualifying rounds.

Nunez then scored for a third successive European game with the last kick when Meret spilled Virgil van Dijk’s header, although it required VAR to overturn an errant offside flag.

The victory ensured a Champions League group stage which had begun with a 4-1 humbling in Naples, offering a portent of the difficulties to come, finished on a high even though Jurgen Klopp’s side had already qualified for the knockout stage going into this game.

That this match passed with little alarm — with the second-half goal they conceded to Leo Ostigard eventually ruled out by VAR — was a positive.

And while that may be a low bar to set after back-to-back defeats to the Premier League’s bottom two sides, Liverpool will take any confidence boost they can — although the loss of James Milner to injury was the downside.

Napoli, off the back of 13 successive victories, did not need to win the game to top Group A and Liverpool’s chances of effecting a four-goal margin of victory seemed unlikely considering their current travails.

They also have a far more important meeting with Tottenham in London on Sunday where they will hope to get their Premier League season back on track, with captain Jordan Henderson rested for this game with that in mind.

As a result the first half was largely unremarkable, with Curtis Jones chipping over the onrushing Meret and the crossbar from a tight angle and later placing his header too high from Roberto Firmino’s backheel flick.

Liverpool’s best move came after Tanguy Ndombele’s shot was comfortably saved by Alisson Becker and immediately from Thiago Alcantara’s sumptuous pass out to Salah, the ball was in the other penalty area with Thiago charging forward to force a better save out of Meret.

Napoli’s exciting winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia posed a threat with a driving run from deep but Ibrahima Konate leant heavily enough on the Georgia international to force him off the ball in the penalty area.

Konate’s return to the team, replacing the out-of-sorts Joe Gomez for only his second start of the season after injury, was one of the positives and his partnership with Van Dijk offers some hope of greater defensive stability.

Thiago continues to be Liverpool’s best midfielder, although considering Klopp’s limited options he is not facing much competition, and he dominated the ball without quite finding the killer pass.

Resources in the centre were depleted further early in second half when Milner went off and was replaced by Harvey Elliott.

Napoli did eventually breach the Van Dijk-Konate partnership — all too easily in truth — but their set-piece goal fell foul of a three-minute VAR review.

Kvaratskhelia’s 53rd-minute free-kick was an inviting one but apparently not so much so for Liverpool’s centre-backs, who allowed Ostigard to ghost in between them and plant a free header from six yards past Alisson only to be ruled fractionally offside.

Salah should have scored with an instinctive close-range volley late on but steered it into the hands of Meret, but he did not pass up a second chance when it fell to him five minutes from time and Nunez then added an almost carbon-copy second.

  • Cuadrado enduring sleepless nights over Juventus’ Champions League form

Juan Cuadrado is struggling to sleep because of Juventus’ poor Champions League form, but the versatile winger is determined to at least qualify for the Europa League.

Juve were eliminated from UEFA’s primary club competition with a game to go – at home to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday – following a 4-3 loss to Benfica last week.

The Italian giants have lost four group matches for the first time in their history and are only above Group H’s bottom side Maccabi Haifa on goal difference.

Massimiliano Allegri’s men must therefore match or better the Israeli side’s result against Benfica if they are to drop into the Europa League via the backdoor.

Either way, it has been a humbling experience for the two-time European champions after missing out on the knockout stages for the first time since the 2013-14 campaign.

“We have played some good matches,” Cuadrado said ahead of facing PSG. “When you play well and don’t win, there are no questions.

“But there is time to improve further. It’s difficult to sleep when certain things happen, but they did happen. We have the strength of a good team here.

“We know this is an important match for us because we are playing for qualification for the Europa League.”

Juve are looking to avoid becoming only the second Italian side to lose five Champions League matches in a single group-stage campaign after Roma in the 2004-05 season.

Cuadrado has started 15 games for Juve in all competitions this season, including all five European games – only Danilo (16) has started more regularly.

The Colombia international, who is expected to feature at the World Cup, has spent seven years in Turin but is set to be out of contract at the end of the campaign.

“I’m happy to be here. I feel like this team is my family,” he said. “I’ve almost spent my entire career as a professional here and am grateful to Juventus.

  • Potter promises Mendy he will have a chance to shine

Graham Potter has praised Edouard Mendy’s professionalism, with the Chelsea goalkeeper set to reclaim his starting spot against Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.

Mendy has been kept out of the starting line-up under Potter by Kepa Arrizabalaga, having struggled with an injury following the new coach’s arrival from Brighton and Hove Albion.

With an impressive run of form since, Kepa has kept his place, restricting Mendy to no game-time until last weekend, when he replaced his injured team-mate in a 4-1 loss to Potter’s former side.

Potter, however, has been impressed by the patience Mendy has shown, and says the Senegal shot-stopper will get his chance to recover his first-choice status while Kepa is out, starting on Wednesday.

“I’ve had some good chats with him, and he’s been great,” Potter said in a press conference. “He was injured when I first arrived, so Kepa played and did well.

“He’s honest enough to know he had to be patient and support Kepa. He’s kept his standards, and now he will have his opportunity.”

Asked if an impressive Mendy performance against Zagreb would present difficult decisions going forward, Potter replied: “You’d hope so. You want as many difficult decisions as possible. That can only be beneficial.”

Potter suggested Denis Zakaria could be in line for his Chelsea debut, with the Switzerland international yet to appear for the Blues since he joined on loan from Juventus.

“I’ve mentioned him before,” Potter stated. “He’s been good, he’s trained well and supported his team-mates. He’s in the frame, so we’ll wait and see.”

Raheem Sterling is expected to feature, as the winger looks to reverse his mixed form, but Potter would not be drawn on whether it impacts the England international’s selection chances for the upcoming World Cup, with Gareth Southgate set to name his squad by November 10.

“I’ve not thought about that in terms of the World Cup,” he added. “It’s too easy to zoom in on the individual.”

  • Schreuder feeling the pressure as Ajax hunt for European salvation

Since Ajax’s 4-0 win over Rangers on Matchday 1, their Champions League campaign has delivered four successive defeats.

For a club accustomed to impressive runs in Europe’s elite competition in recent years, the Europa League is now likely to hand the Eredivisie giants a second crack at success on the continent this term.

It is in stark contrast to their domestic form, with the Dutch champions sitting top of the Eredivisie with nine victories from 11 games.

Their European woes have left boss Alfred Schreuder under pressure — but he remains confident ahead of tonight’s showdown with Rangers at Ibrox.

He said: “We have analysed the home match against Rangers. We were in good form that day and it went well.

“We have also had a couple of matches against teams that were too mighty for us and we have been able to measure ourselves against other teams in different phases.

“I do enjoy travelling and the stadium is fantastic. You feel like a little boy when you come to places like Ibrox.

“But we haven’t done any sightseeing as we haven’t come here for that, we have come here to win the match.

“When you see the group after the draw was made we believed we could finish in top two. But the reality is that it didn’t work out like we hoped.

“It is important for us to reach the Europa League and if we do that then we have to look to go far in that competition.”

    Not at their level

Rangers have struggled with the step up to Champions League football this term
Rangers have struggled with the step up to Champions League football this term

It has been an even more disappointing European campaign for Rangers, who have lost all five of their group games, conceding 19 and scoring just once.

Even qualification to the Europa League — the competition they reached the final of last season — looks unlikely, with the Gers needing to win by a five-goal margin tonight to leapfrog Ajax into third place in Group A.

And manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has suggested his side are not even at Ajax’s level yet, let alone that of Napoli and Liverpool whose qualification to the knockout phase is already wrapped up.

The 47-year-old Dutchman, who saw his side lose 4-0 to the visitors in September, said: “Compete with Ajax? A team that has almost played the final and for five or six years in a row have been doing well in Europe.

“We have been doing well in Europe the last three years but we are still not at the same level as Ajax.

“We are developing and that’s the way it is. It is the way the differences are in Europe at the moment.

“If you see Ajax, the players overall are from a higher level, their budget is higher.

“They bought players for £100million. They bought a not bad defender [Calvin Bassey] from us.

“We cannot compare ourselves to Ajax but we can compete with them on the day, especially at home at Ibrox.”

    Bassey returns

Calvin Bassey returns to Rangers for the first time tonight
Calvin Bassey returns to Rangers for the first time tonight

There will be mixed emotions tonight for Ajax defender Bassey, who returns to Ibrox for the first time since departing Rangers for the Netherlands for £23m in the summer.

The Nigeria international, 22, said: “I know a lot of people here and it will be nice to see them after the game because at the end of the day I’ve come here to do a job.

“I’ve got to stay focused and not focus on all the distractions. I’ll say hello to everyone but save the conversations for after the game and focus on the match.

“He [Van Bronckhorst] gave me an opportunity when he came [to Rangers]. He taught me a lot and helped me get confidence and play. He has been very important to my career.

“I think the playing styles are different. The way we play is evident to see. We are more fluid and Ajax is a possession-based team with exciting football.

“That is what we try to give in every single game. You should be able to see the difference.

“The players have top quality. I am not saying the Rangers players don’t, they have quality as well. It is a good step.”

    Did you know?

Rangers have lost all five of their games in the Champions League this season. No Scottish side have ever been beaten six times within a single campaign in the European Cup or Champions League.

The Gers have lost all five of their matches against Ajax in European competition — more than against any other side.

Since the start of last season, Steven Berghuis has been directly involved in seven goals in 13 appearances for Ajax in the Champions League — the most of any current player.

Fourteen different players have attempted at least one shot for Van Bronckhorst’s men in the Champions League this season but only Scott Arfield has found the net.

Among players to have attempted at least 10 take-ons in the Champions League this season, Ajax’s Mohammed Kudus has the highest success rate.

  • Contract extension is a sign of Milan’s vision – Pioli

Stefano Pioli wanted to share the credit around after signing a contract extension to keep him as Milan coach until the end of the 2024-25 season.

Former Inter coach Pioli took over at Milan in 2019, and has overseen a rejuvenation in the Rossoneri’s fortunes.

Having finished second in the 2020-21 campaign, Milan clinched their first Serie A title in 11 years last term.

Milan, who sit third in Serie A 12 games into this season, are also on the verge of qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time since the 2013-14 campaign. They need only to avoid defeat against Salzburg on Wednesday to join Chelsea in progressing from Group E.

When asked about signing his new deal in Tuesday’s pre-match press conference, Pioli said: “The credit belongs to everyone. The club is giving me great confidence.

“I am very happy with the renewal. I thanked the players because without them this renewal would not have been possible.

“We started our three-year journey, now we really care about passing [our objectives for] the season.

“I really appreciated this. The club could have extended my contract by a year, but they did it with a longer time frame.

“It is a sign of our vision, of our collaboration, to try to make Milan bigger and bigger. I really appreciated the renewal and I can only thank the owners. I have always felt appreciated.”

The omens are promising for Milan, seven-time European champions, ahead of their meeting with Salzburg at San Siro, given they are unbeaten in all three of their previous encounters with the Austrian side.

They do come into the match on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Torino in Serie A, however, though Pioli – whose side lost successive matches to Chelsea before bouncing back with a 4-0 thrashing of Dinamo Zagreb – is confident Milan can get the job done.

“We are a strong team, we have values and a lot of motivation,” he said. “We know the difficulties of the match. Salzburg have not lost away from home [in this season’s Champions League].

“We have strong players and we play this match in front of our fans, I can tell you that we have all the right cards to do well.

“Doing well would mean a lot, we had our first goal clearly in mind. We built this possibility, it was conceivable that if we hadn’t won a match with Chelsea the last one would have been decisive.

“The team now knows how to manage these heavy commitments. We are disappointed, but now it’s another game.”

  • Hojbjerg says Spurs will just have to ‘deal with’ Conte absence in Marseille

Tottenham will simply have to “deal with the fact” Antonio Conte will not be with them when they face Marseille in Tuesday’s crunch Champions League group-stage game.

That is according to Spurs midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who took over press conference duties along with assistant head coach Cristian Stellini after Conte decided not to attend following his red card at the end of the draw with Sporting CP last week.

The Spurs head coach was furious after Harry Kane’s stoppage-time goal at 1-1 was ruled out by the video assistant referee for offside, and his reaction saw him sent off.

As a result, Conte will be banned from being on the touchline or in the dressing room for the crucial Group D clash with Marseille at Stade Velodrome.

“Of course, your head coach is a massive part of the team,” Hojbjerg told reporters on Monday. “Luckily he has a very good staff and players who are very well aware of what he expects from them and we’ll try the best to fill his role.

“Whether he’ll hide in a laundry basket [referencing Jose Mourinho doing so at Chelsea in 2005 when banned], I don’t know. I’d say no,” he joked.

“He’s a person who lives every game with great passion, with his heart. We need to make sure we’re well-prepared, which we are. We have to deal with the fact that he’s not on the sideline.

“For me it’s not a difficult situation, it’s more a different situation. We know what we have to do and realise the ambition. The focus is on the pitch and what we have to do.”

Spurs lead the group heading into the final round of matches but know they must win to guarantee their passage to the last 16, with a draw only being enough should Sporting and Eintracht Frankfurt also draw.

Marseille are bottom of the group, but will leapfrog Spurs with a home win, though Igor Tudor’s side are winless in their past four games in all competitions (D1 L3).

“Our ambition is to go through. That’s what we’re playing for,” Hojbjerg added. “It was a rollercoaster last week [against Sporting CP] but that doesn’t help us now. We have the chance tomorrow to achieve our objective.”

Stellini confirmed Spurs will still be without injured trio Dejan Kulusevski, Richarlison and Cristian Romero, and outlined what the situation will be with Conte’s involvement on the day.

“He will sit next to Gianluca [Conte, technical and analytics coach] for sure. I don’t know where. He will be here at the stadium,” Stellini said. “He will work with us until we arrive here and then we have to stop the communication and then he will stay close to Gianluca.

“We have prepared all the strategies and our strategies are clear. We have to play our match at the best and we all have to do something more to fill the gap.”

  • Plymouth 4-2 Exeter: Supersub Hardie earns leaders victory

Ryan Hardie came off the bench to score twice and send Plymouth four points clear at the top of League One following a thrilling 4-2 comeback win over Devon rivals Exeter at a rain-soaked Home Park.

Hardie fired into the roof of the net on the turn in the 70th minute after collecting Morgan Whittaker’s incisive pass into the penalty area.

And the Scottish striker latched onto another through ball from Whittaker to slot home a killer fourth after 84 minutes to clinch Argyle’s ninth successive home league win.

Exeter opened the scoring when Jay Stansfield shrugged off Bali Mumba’s challenge on the left flank to tee up Archie Collins for a far-post tap-in after 26 minutes.

Argyle hit back immediately as Whittaker spun on Adam Randell’s inch-perfect ball into the box to fire past goalkeeper Jamal Blackman.

Stansfield again split the Argyle defence to put Sam Nombe in on goal and he rounded Michael Cooper to put the Grecians 2-1 ahead in the 52nd minute.

City celebrations were again short-lived, though, as Mumba met a clearance from a corner with a thumping 25-yard strike off the slick surface and into the corner, with Hardie going on to steal the show.

  • Napoli coach Spalletti ‘not fooled’ by Liverpool form or Klopp praise

Luciano Spalletti says Napoli will “not be fooled” by Liverpool’s recent struggles, nor by Jurgen Klopp suggesting the Reds cannot record an emphatic victory to top their Champions League group.

Klopp’s side must defeat Napoli by four goals at Anfield on Tuesday to win Group A, having been thrashed 4-1 by Napoli on matchday one in the reverse fixture before recovering with four successive wins.

While Liverpool progressed to the knockout stages with a game to spare, the Reds have struggled in the Premier League this season, sitting ninth in the table – some 15 points behind leaders Arsenal.

Klopp heralded the potential of Napoli on Monday, suggesting a four-goal victory would be near-impossible as he backed the Serie A side to reach the final, though Spalletti took the praise with a pinch of salt.

“I think I’ve read that he said they don’t think about winning 4-0 … I think he said it seriously,” the Napoli coach said in a jovial manner.

“If he said it seriously that he can’t win 4-0 if he wants to, let’s talk about it! Excessive compliments sometimes serve to lift you up and then smash you down.

“[Klopp] made the last two Champions League finals, so he is better than everyone, he and his team. We accept compliments if they are sincere, but compliments do not make results and standings.

“We know the game will be very hard. We will have to be the same as always, as in the first leg, and it is almost impossible to repeat that match.

“To finish first or second, everything changes, it seems stupid to answer whether we want to win or not – we came here with the best intentions possible.

“Then there is a stage like Anfield, against those players there, and we will have to prove that we are up to it.”

  • Pioli extends Milan deal until the end of 2024-25

Stefano Pioli has signed a contract extension that will keep him at AC Milan until the end of the 2024-25 season.

The Rossoneri coach has been in position at San Siro since 2019, having previously taken charge of rivals Inter.

Pioli did not last long with the Nerazzurri, yet he has been a huge success with Milan, last season winning the Scudetto – their first since 2011.

The 57-year-old’s deal was due to expire at the end of this campaign, but the club confirmed a two-year extension on Monday.

“Having begun this virtuous path, which led to the 2021-22 Serie A title, AC Milan and Stefano shall continue to work on this ambitious project, which reflects the club’s history and values,” a short statement added.

Pioli has won 87 of his 153 matches as Milan coach, with that 56.9 per cent win rate his best at any club.

Milan finished sixth in Serie A in Pioli’s first season after he took over in the October, before jumping to second and then first in the subsequent campaigns.

Despite a shock defeat to Torino on Sunday, the Rossoneri are third this term.

  • Neuer and Hernandez back in training as duo’s World Cup hopes improve

Manuel Neuer and Lucas Hernandez were back in Bayern Munich training on Monday, with their respective hopes of being fit for the World Cup seemingly receiving a boost.

Bayern captain Neuer had been struggling with a shoulder injury that forced him to miss six games, but he returned to goalkeeper training ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Inter.

As recently as last week Nagelsmann did not want to commit to Neuer being ready to feature for Germany at the World Cup, saying he is not a “mystic”.

But he appears hopeful of being able to call upon the 36-year-old away to Hertha Berlin on Saturday.

“We hope he’ll be available again for the weekend. He came through training well and didn’t show any reaction. But we’ll have to wait and see,” Nagelsmann told reporters.

Tuesday’s game will also come too soon for Hernandez, not that the match has much riding on it – Bayern and Inter are already confirmed as Group C winners and runners-up respectively.

However, the France international is close to a return to action after suffering an adductor tear in September, with Monday seeing him take part in full team training.

Thomas Muller remains sidelined for the time being as well.

The Germany attacker has struggled lately with a hip issue, and Nagelsmann accepts he may not even be available to face Hertha.

“We’ll reduce Thomas’s workload this week and see how things are for the weekend,” Nagelsmann said.

“But I’m leaning more towards him not being back at the weekend.”
