A sobering night for Rangers. They were thoroughly outclassed in Amsterdam and that’s back-to-back 4-0 defeats for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side.
Ajax were rampant in the three-goal first half, not giving the visitors a chance to breath.
The tempo dropped considerably after the break and Rangers did at least manage to stage a few attacks, but they were undone by a careless mistake for goal number four.
Uefahas opened an investigation into alleged racist behaviour of Juventus fans during Tuesday’s Champions League game at Paris Saint-Germain.
Social media footage shared by anti-discrimination network Fare appears to show some Juve supporters making monkey noises and Nazi salutes.
French police say four individuals have been identified and arrested for “provocation to racial hatred within the framework of a sports arena”.
PSG won the opening Group H game 2-1.
“A Uefa ethics and disciplinary inspector has been appointed to conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding allegations of discriminatory behaviour by Juventus supporters,” European football’s governing body said in a statement.
“Information on this matter will be made available in due course.”
Diego Costawill have his Wolvesmedical on Thursday after having his visa granted by the Football Association upon appeal.
The former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid forward, 33, has agreed a deal until next summer after signing as an out-of-contract player.
Costa was initially denied a work permit because he did not fulfil the points criteria.
He last played for Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro in January.
Wolves had made a special application, which has now been approved.
Costa is due to fly into England on Wednesday evening before completing his move to join Bruno Lage’s side.
With Raul Jimenez and new signing Sasa Kalajdzic set to miss Saturday’s Premier League trip to Liverpool through injury, Wolves could be without a recognised striker at Anfield.
It remains to be seen whether Lage picks Costa in his squad after so long out.
Wolves play Manchester City at Molineux immediately before the international break on Saturday, 17 September.
Veteran pace bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad have “got their eyes set” on next summer’s Ashes, according to England captain Ben Stokes.
Both were dropped for England’s tour of West Indies in March but returned to play a key part in Stokes’ side winning five of their six Tests this summer.
Broad will turn 37 during the Ashes, while Anderson will be almost 41.
“I honestly just can’t see a point where they decide it’s time for them to step away,” said Stokes.
Anderson and Broad, England’s all-time leading wicket-takers, will line-up for the deciding Test against South Africa at The Oval, beginning on Thursday.
Anderson has taken 24 wickets at an average of 17.66 in Test cricket this summer, while Broad has 22 at 31.90.
“Jimmy has come out and said how much fun he’s had and Broady’s influence in the dressing room is the best I’ve seen while playing with him over the years,” added Stokes.
“The conversations he has had not only with me but the other bowlers, how he wants to help them and stuff like that is something he’s taken to another level.”
England are scheduled to play only five Tests this winter – three in Pakistan in December and two in New Zealand in February.
Given the conditions in Pakistan, both Anderson and Broad could be used sparingly, or not travel at all.
England will then play one Test against Ireland next summer before the bid to regain the Ashes from Australia in June and July.
If Anderson does play next summer, it would mark 20 years since his Test debut, against Zimbabwe at Lord’s in 2003. He has taken 664 wickets in 174 matches.
Broad made his bow in 2007 and has since taken 559 wickets from 158 caps.
“It’s great to see Jimmy at 40 and Broady at 36 having a new lease of life in the dressing room and honestly I can’t tell you when the end will be,” said Stokes.
“We’ve got the Ashes coming up next summer and I’m pretty sure they have got their eyes set on that.”
Aryna Sabalenka reached the US Open semi-finals for the second consecutive year with a straight-set win over Karolina Pliskova in New York.
Belarusian sixth seed Sabalenka produced a clinical display to beat the Czech 22nd seed 6-1 7-6 (7-4).
It is Pliskova’s fourth quarter-final exit at Flushing Meadows since reaching the 2016 final.
Sabalenka, 24, will face world number one Iga Swiatek or eighth seed Jessica Pegula for a place in Saturday’s final.
Widely expected to be a blockbuster encounter between two big hitters, Sabalenka ultimately proved too strong for the former world number one as she kept alive her hopes of clinching a maiden Grand Slam singles title.
Sabalenka got off to the ideal start, twice breaking Pliskova’s serve as she raced into a 4-0 lead before wrapping up the first set in just 28 minutes.
While 30-year-old Pliskova improved in the second set to force a tie-break, Sabalenka refused to relent and secured her place in the last four after firing seven aces and 30 winners without facing a break point.Â
“I expected a great level with long rallies. I wanted to stay in the match and make her work,” Sabalenka said in her on-court interview.
Sabalenka, searching for her first appearance in a Grand Slam singles final, will have the chance to avenge last year’s semi-final loss to Leylah Fernandez.
However, the defeat ends a disappointing year in the majors for Pliskova, who suffered second-round exits at the French Open and Wimbledon after missing the Australian Open because of injury.
Former Al Ahly manager Pitso Mosimane says he does not know if his next job will be in Africa but insists he will not rush into another role.
The continent’s most decorated club coach left the Egyptian side, with whom he won two African Champions League titles, by mutual consent in June.
The South African, 58, has been linked with national teams and top clubs in Africa and Asia since.
“I am just waiting for the right project because the mentality is not to jump at any offers at this stage of my career,” he told BBC Sport Africa.
Mosimane led the Cairo giants to back-to-back Champions League triumphs after joining in 2020, but lost last season’s final to Wydad Casablanca.
His haul of three continental trophies with Al Ahly included the Caf Super Cup which he landed last December.
The former South Africa coach also secured two consecutive third-placed finishes at the Club World Cup, including the 2021 edition played in February.
Since June, he has switched his attention to the Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools in Johannesburg.
“I always dedicate myself to the job because this game is my passion, it’s why I decided to focus on the schools for now,” he said.
“I am very excited with the level of support from the provinces here. Some schools and individuals have also embraced what we are doing now and that makes me happy.
“I am trying to develop young footballers with the aim of creating the stars of tomorrow, but I’ve been approached by some teams.
“After 21 years in coaching and the structure we are building here, it is very crucial to carefully consider the right project to take.”
Al Ahly return?
Mosimane left Al Ahly by mutual consent in June, since when the Egyptians have fired his successor
When Mosimane, who coached South Africa from 2010 to 2012, took his role in North Africa, it was his first managerial post outside of his homeland.
Some reports in Egypt have linked him with a return to Ahly after his former employers sacked his successor, Portuguese manager Ricardo Soares, just two months into the job.
Reports in his native country have linked him with Tanzania’s Simba, while some suggest Mosimane is looking to take on a national side.
In response, he says he is happy to wait for the right opportunity.
“I had a great time in Egypt, made some good friends and remain proud of what we managed to achieve,” he added.
“I will not close any door and if the right project [from clubs or national teams] comes, then we’ll see where that takes us.”
During his time in South Africa, Mosimane also won the 2016 African Champions League title with Mamelodi Sundowns, which earned him the best African Club Coach of the Year award in 2016.
The former Bafana Bafana midfielder’s managerial career – one that has taken him the length of the continent, from SuperSport United to Al Ahly via Sundowns – has delivered a combined 21 titles across three clubs.
British police say a man in his 40s has been arrested over alleged war crimes committed during civil wars in Liberia that began in 1989 and ended in 2007.
The violence left a quarter of a million people dead.
He was arrested during a raid on a home in the city of Newcastle on suspicion of committing offences contrary to the International Criminal Court Act.
The arrest follows a referral early last year to Britain’s Counter Terrorism Command.
The former president of Liberia, Charles Taylor, is serving a 50 year sentence in a British prison after being convicted of several crimes including terrorism, rape and the use of child soldiers during Sierra Leone’s civil war that ended in 2002.
Jake Paul will face UFClegend Anderson Silva at Phoenix’s Gila River Arena on October 29, as he makes a return to the boxing ring.
Paul has not fought since his sixth-round knockout of Tyron Woodley in December 2021, his second of two wins against the former UFC welterweight champion.
Before that, Paul had knocked out Ben Askren and after overcoming Woodley for a second time, was meant to face Tommy Fury and Hasim Rahman Jr. before both fights fell apart in August.
YouTube star Paul has made somewhat of a name for fighting former professionals from the octagon, with the next challenge coming against former UFC middleweight champion Silva.
While holding the record for most consecutive victories in UFC (16), 47-year-old Silva boasts a 3-1 tally as a professional boxer, beating the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez and former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz.
He retired from mixed martial arts in 2020Â after five losses from his last six fights, albeit against world-class opponents.
The bout will be contested at 187 pounds over eight three-minute rounds, the weight Paul claims Anderson’s team requested.
“The plan is for me to fight at 185 [pounds] going forward and that’s what I wanted this fight at given it was the weight Anderson Silva fought at during his reign as the most dominant UFC champion ever,” Paul told ESPN.
“Anderson’s team asked if we could set the weight at 187, two pounds more than what I wanted. That level of professionalism and precision is appreciated, and of course I agreed to his request.”
Paul hailed the capabilities of Anderson with a statement to announce the clash, pointing to his victory over Chavez as proof of his boxing ability.
“Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva is the most versatile fighter the world has ever seen,” the statement said. “Just a year ago he outclassed boxing champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and showed the world why he is often referred to as the greatest fighter of all time.
“Every expert, from MMA to boxing, has said Jake Paul won’t fight Anderson Silva. They said Jake Paul is afraid of Anderson Silva, and Jake Paul would lose to Anderson Silva.
“Well, to all the non-believers  Jake Paul is fighting Anderson Silva. It’s an honour to have the opportunity to share the ring with the greatest UFC striker of all time.
“On Saturday, October 29, I will walk humbly into the ring, touch gloves with a living legend and do my best to exterminate ‘The Spider’.”
Anthony Joshua‘s promoter Eddie Hearn has declared his fighter has accepted a proposed bout with Tyson Fury.
The Gypsy King went public with his offer to Joshua as he pushes to set up a battle of Britain clash with his WBC heavyweight title on the line before the end of the year.
Fury and Joshua had an agreement to fight in Saudi Arabia in August 2021 but those plans came crashing down after a judge ordered Deontay Wilder to be granted his rematch with Fury.
But now the fight looks likely to go ahead in the UK after Hearn confirmed an offer has been accepted.
The Matchroom supremo told iFL TV “We offered Tyson Fury the fight when he wasn’t champion, at 60-40, and he turned it down. He asked for 50-50.
“I spoke to AJ and he said, ‘Look, I don’t believe he’s for real, but yeah, I’ll take the fight. See what the offer is’.
“They came back yesterday and me and George [Warren] kind of had an agreement that we weren’t gonna talk about it, but obviously Fury came out and basically let the world know the offer.
“Sixty-forty was the offer, as Tyson said. They want a rematch clause and they asked for a date at the beginning of November [for the initial fight].
“I don’t know whether that was a wind-up or whatever, but we just went back this morning and said, ‘We think, I think particularly, he deserves more than 40 per cent, but he’s happy. And I don’t make the decisions, he does’.
“So I went back this morning and said, ‘We accept 60-40, we want that reversed in a rematch, rightfully so. [Fury is] the champion here, you want the biggest split, which I think is fair — and we want to do the fight in December’.”
Fury said on Wednesday that his team had secured provisional dates for Wembley and Cardiff, with Hearn suggesting December 17 as a good option for the bout.
He added: “Interestingly, they have [a date booked for]Â December 17 held at [what was formerly] Millennium Stadium, so that’s perfect. That’s perfect for us.”
Former Manchester United and England star Rio Gavin Ferdinand is concerned about Chelsea’s decision to let go of head coach Thomas Tuchel.
Ferdinand feels new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly who was a big spender in the transfer window has acted too soon in dismissing the former Paris Saint-Germain head coach.
“He is a proper manager. All the players I speak to talk positively about him. He is honest and direct. He has clarity on how he wants to play. I can’t understand it. It doesn’t make sense to me,” he said.
Ferdinand added that “Tuchel has a 60 per cent win rate. A lot of managers would be delighted to have that.
Thomas Tuchel was sacked from the club today, Septemeber 7, 2022. Per reports, recent non-performance of the Blues led to his dismissal.
Tuchel was appointed as the successor to club legend Frank Lampard in January 2021 and promptly led Chelsea to Champions League glory in his first season.
More success followed in the form of trophies in the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup, but Tuchel also lost two FA Cup finals and an EFL Cup showpiece during his tenure.
A slow start to this season continued on Tuesday with a shock 1-0 Champions League defeat away to Dinamo Zagreb.
Brighton and Hove Albion boss Graham Potter has emerged as an early frontrunner to replace Tuchel.
Whether or not he takes the Chelsea job now, Ferdinand believes Potter is destined to move to a top team at some stage.
The former United defender added: “Potter has done a fantastic job. I think he will be someone called by bigger clubs than Brighton with due respect. But would he take it?
“When he went to Brighton their style of football changed immediately. He has a clear identity.
“I think on the grass he will be great in that sense. The questions are would he be able to handle the experienced players?
“In terms of handling big players and egos, there are a nucleus of young players there who would warm to him immediately.”
Zinedine Zidane and Mauricio Pochettino are also among the early mooted contenders to replace Tuchel.
Organisers of the 2022 World Cup have revealed that alcohol will be served “in select areas” within stadiums in Qatar.
The vantage points is necessary as the Fifa event will be taking place in a Muslim country in the Middle East for the first time.
The consumption of alcohol is prohibited in Islam.
A 40,000-capacity fan zone in the capital Doha will provide drinks to be purchased.
CEO Nasser Al Khater told BBC Sport that “We want people to come and have experiences they will never forget.”
Al Khater said they are still “finalising our alcohol strategy” but this is the first time the Supreme Committee for Legacy and Delivery have publicly announced plans to allow fans to drink within the stadium perimeter.
Fifa have said ticket holders will have access to drink options within the stadium perimeter prior to kick-off and after the final whistle.
Inside the stadium bowl ticket holders will only be able to purchase non-alcoholic beer and soft drinks.
It marks a significant relaxation of the rules for the tournament as Qatar – like other countries in the Middle East – has strict controls on alcohol and it is illegal to consume it in public.
Licensed hotel bars and restaurants are the only places that usually sell alcohol, but visitors during the tournament will also be able to purchase a beverage at the Fifa fan festival in Doha’s Al Bidda Park after 18:30 local time.
During the 2019 Fifa Club World Cup, which took place in Doha and was won by Liverpool, supporters were able to consume alcohol in a site just outside the city.
Al Khater said additional locations “will be communicated in due course”, adding: “While alcohol will be available to those who want a drink in designated areas, it will not be openly available on the streets.
“What we ask is that people, when they visit, stick to these designated areas.
“We are incredibly excited to be welcoming the world to Qatar and the Middle East and Arab world. For many people it will be their first opportunity to see and explore the region.
“It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we are determined to use it to its fullest.”
Qatar has a population of just under three million and it is expected about 1.2 million visitors will be in attendance during the World Cup.
Al Khater said there were “no concerns over a shortfall of accommodation” with up to 130,000 rooms available across hotels, cabins in two cruise ships, apartments and desert camps.
There have been 40 million ticket requests for the tournament, with 2.45 million already being sold, and Al Khater said he was “confident” all tickets available to the general public will be sold.
The tournament has been moved to start a day earlier on Sunday, 20 November, with hosts Qatar facing Ecuador.
It is reported that Chelsea are set to hold talks with Brighton boss Graham Potter to take charge of the club.
The Blues sacked their manager Thomas Tuchel today and are in search of a replacement.
Ex-Swansea and Ostersunds FK coach Potter, 47, has been given permission by the Seagulls to talk with Chelsea.
Tuchel was dismissed after losing the confidence of Chelsea’s players and the new ownership, who took over at the club in May.
He has won three trophies in 20 months at Stamford Bridge.
Potter, who has been tipped as a future England boss, has led Brighton to fourth in the table this season after winning four and drawing one of their six Premier League games.
He was appointed in May 2019 and has led the club to 15th, 16th and ninth-place finishes in his three seasons in charge.
But his brand of attacking and tactically flexible football has brought him many admirers in the game.

Chelsea’s new ownership oversaw a £255.3m spending spree in the summer window, bringing in eight new players.
They were sixth in the Premier League after three wins, one draw and two defeats when they parted company with Tuchel.
The decision to sack the German would have been taken regardless of their 1-0 defeat in their opening Champions League game at Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday, BBC Sport understands.
Chelsea plan to make a swift appointment and Potter was among the bookmakers’ favourites to take over, along with former Spurs and Paris St-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino, former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane and current Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers.
In terms of their search for Tuchel’s replacement, the Blues are also believed to be looking for a long-term manager who shares their vision for a collaborative culture and who will focus on development of all players in the squad.

Barcelona has signed a world-record deal with England midfielder Keira Walsh, who leaves Manchester City.
The fee, £400,000, breaks the previous record for a female player set by Chelsea, who paid more than £250,000 for Pernille Harder in 2020.
Keira Walsh, Euro 2022 winner leaves Man City after eight years.
The 25-year-old follows fellow England international Lucy Bronze in swapping Manchester for Barcelona.
Defensive midfielder Walsh, who has signed a three-year-deal with Barca, played an influential role in England’s Euro 2022 triumph.
She won the Player of the Match award in the 2-1 extra-time final win over Germany at Wembley.
City had turned down previous bids made by the Catalan club, who won their third successive Primera Division title last season.
Barcelona are currently without Ballon d’Or-winning midfielder Alexia Putellas, who suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament while training with Spain in July before the Euros.
Walsh has been ever-present for City since making her debut in 2014, making 211 appearances and winning eight major trophies with her childhood club.
She played 18 times for Gareth Taylor’s side in the Women’s Super League last season, scoring once and registering nine assists.
Since earning her first cap for England in 2017, Walsh has made 50 appearances for the Lionesses.
City have also lost England midfielder Georgia Stanway to Bayern Munich and Scotland’s Caroline Weir to Real Madrid this summer, while both Ellen White and Jill Scott announced their retirement from football last month.
Doctor Roberto Rossi is reported to have said Paul Pogba’s meniscus injury was “worsened” because of his decision to undergo conservative therapy rather than surgery.
Interacting with Tuttosport, Dr Rossi explained that the lesion to the lateral meniscus was tricky because the tissue was fragmented and the injury had worsened and when the player tried to force it by running into the field.
“The conservative therapy did not work. On the contrary, the injury worsened. When we intervened, there were no conditions to complete a broken meniscus suture. It was only possible to intervene with [surgery],” he added.
The France star initially decided against an operation to solve a lesion to the lateral meniscus in his right knee, and favoured an alternative course of treatment.
Inconsistent results during training last week, however, forced him to undergo surgery on Monday, with a predicted eight-week recovery period casting doubt on his chances of making France’s Qatar 2022 World Cup squad.
His decision to initially delay an operation has left Juventus frustrated, and now Rossi has outlined further how Pogba’s original choice has waylaid him even more.
Thank you guys for all the messages and support!
I’ll be back soon – and stronger than ever! 💪🾠pic.twitter.com/nGgqqz8s6C
Pogba returned to Juventus for a stint, having originally left them in 2016 to return to Manchester United.
His arrival back in Turin on a free transfer has proven difficult so far thanks to his injury, and Didier Deschamps will face a decision whether to include the World Cup winner for his squad ahead of their title defence in Qatar.
Users of social media are reacting to Chelsea’s decision to sack their manager Thomas Tuchel.
Chelsea announced Tuchel’s dismissal on Wednesday, September 7, following a defeat in the UEFA Champions League opener.
The Premier League side suffered a shocking 0-1 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia on Tuesday, adding to their disappointing start to the season.
According to some supporters of the club, Chelsea’s decision cannot be welcomed. They believe Tuchel has done good in the past and should be given the opportunity to right the wrong that is going on with the team.
However, some say his dismissal is the best thing that can happen to Chelsea.
But this Tuchel sacking really be shocking ooh 😂😂 you make someone spend 300m on defenders and still loose to plumbers how he no go sack you 😂😂😂
#ToddBoehly has done the right thing in my opinion. Well played Todd. #ChelseaFC has never played so badly in #UEFA Champions league. No motivation, No coordination, No intensity whatsoever. Out of form players in Matches actually expose #ThomasTuchel has lost the dressing room.
Manchester United head coach, Erik ten Hag, is optimistic that Marcus Rashford would remain with the club.
According to him, the club are in control of matters when it comes to the player.
Ten Hag noted that Rashford is happier at Manchester United.
“It’s difficult for me to talk about the past. What I see is a happy Marcus Rashford. We worked really hard the last two months with him on different aspects. He likes it, he wants to transfer it to the pitch. He comes in every day, he enjoys it, he’s smiling, [he has] a really positive vibe. If you put all of those things together and you are happy, you will contribute more to the team,” he said.
“Definitely,” the Dutchman stated when asked if the forward was in his long-term plans. “I don’t think he is out of contract – I think United control the situation.
The England international was linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain over the off-season following a difficult 2021-22 campaign, where he scored just five times in 32 games across all competitions.
But with three goals and two assists in the first six games of the new Premier League season, the 24-year-old looks to have rediscovered both the best of his abilities and his satisfaction with life at Old Trafford.
Rashford’s United contract expires at the end of the current campaign, but with United set to start their Europa League campaign against Real Sociedad this week, manager Ten Hag says the club have his future in hand, given they have the option to extend his contract by a year.
His role as a centre-forward has kept Cristiano Ronaldo out of the starting line-up the past four games for United, with the Portuguese star benched alongside captain Harry Maguire.
Quizzed on whether a return could be on the cards for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Ten Hag acknowledged the veteran forward is fit to feature from the off, while discussing plans to rotate his squad for their European schedule.
“He started against Brentford, then not since, but he is ready to start,” added Ten Hag.
“Of course [he can start for the majority of games]. We have to win every game. We want to win every tournament, so we take everything seriously.
“We not only have a team, we have a squad, but we have to win every game and that is the mentality Manchester United needs.”
Ten Hag acknowledged his approach may not keep all of the big names in his squad satisfied, but says his players will get a chance to shine, providing they earn their place.
“Maybe I can not keep them all happy every game, but everyone gets the game time if they perform well, [it is] quite clear,” he added. “We need everyone, we have a lot of games to cover.”
A murderer’s life in Somaliland has been spared after he agreed to pay 100 camels as compensation.
Per reports, the man, whose name was not disclosed was among five convicts set to be executed in the Madheera area, north-east of Hargesia, the capital of the self-declared republic on Tuesday.
Elders from the families of both the murderer and the victim arrived at the execution site and untied him from a pole.
This was some minutes before the firing squad was given their orders.
The other four, who had been found guilty over separate murder charges, were shot dead.
Last-minute interventions at execution sites are not uncommon in Somaliland.
In the traditional justice system, the compensation for a man’s murder is 100 camels, but money is often used instead because of a decline in the number of the prized animals in recent years.
This parallel system operates alongside a formal court process which complements or sometimes replaces it entirely.
It has however been criticised because it means people from rich families can buy their freedom while the poor can’t.
Former Manchester United player Ryan Giggs is expected to face a retrial next year on assault charges and controlling behaviour, a judge has ruled.
Giggs had been on trial for four weeks, but jurors were discharged last week after failing to reach a verdict following 23 hours of deliberations.
He is accused of assaulting ex-girlfriend Kate Greville, causing actual bodily harm, and using controlling and coercive behaviour against her from August 2017 to November 2020.
Also, he was charged with the common assault of Ms Greville’s younger sister, Emma. Giggs denies all the allegations against him.
Prosecutor Peter Wright QC confirmed at Manchester Crown Court on Wednesday the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) will seek a retrial, with a date of July 31, 2023 being set.
The new trial date comes almost a year after the start of the first trial, and more than two and a half years after Giggs was arrested in November 2020.
Giggs, who resigned as Wales boss in June, was not present at court on Wednesday for the decision but later released a statement expressing his disappointment.
“After more than three weeks in court I am obviously disappointed that a retrial has been ordered,” the statement read.
“My not guilty plea remains in relation to all charges. I am confident that justice will eventually be done and my name will be cleared of all the allegations.
“I would like to thank my legal team, my mum, my children, my girlfriend Zara, as well as my closest friends, for their support throughout this period.
“I understand the level of interest and the scrutiny around this case, but I would like to ask that my and my family’s privacy is respected in the weeks and months ahead.”
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has said he feels “sorry” for Thomas Tuchel after his dismissal.
Chelsea today, September 7, sacked Tuchel due to the non-performance of the club.
Although Eric ten Hag feels disturbed, he said “there is nothing I can say.”
“It’s Chelsea, not Man United. It’s early in the season, yes,” he added.
Tuchel parted company with the Blues just a day on from starting their Champions League campaign with a shock 1-0 loss at Dinamo Zagreb.
An indifferent start to their Premier League campaign that has produced three wins, two defeats and a draw has left Chelsea sixth in the table.
The news came as a surprise to many, though, given Chelsea spent big in the transfer window to sign the likes of Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella, Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibaly and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Having also won the Champions League four months after joining the club in January 2021, most would have expected Tuchel to be afforded more time by the club’s new owners led by Todd Boehly.
United are one place and two points ahead of Chelsea in the infant Premier League.
Chelsea earlier today sacked their manager Thomas Tuchel due to the non-performance of the club.
This week’s defeat to Zagreb was the final straw for new owner Todd Boehly, after a slow start to the new Premier League season that has seen Chelsea win just three of their first six games.
In the wake of his departure, we take a look at the highs and lows of the Tuchel era at Stamford Bridge…
Thomas Tuchelreplaced Frank Lampard and has been with Chelsea for close to 20 months.
He led the Blues to an improbable Champions League triumph just weeks after his arrival.
HIGH: European glory from the ashes
Tuchel did more than steer Chelsea back on track he pulled off a shock silverware smash-and-grab.
He took the club to an eventual fourth-place finish, as well as oversaw two-legged wins over Porto and Real Madrid to reach the Champions League final and there, shocked favourites Manchester City to claim the Blues’ second title in Europe’s biggest club competition.
LOW: Ignominy on the continent
For that high-water mark, however, Chelsea have also had issues at continental level, perhaps best exemplified by two disparate results  this week’s loss to Zagreb and last season’s Champions League quarter-final exit to Madrid.
Defeat to the Croatian side came with a toothless attack that failed to gel for the German, but the crash against Madrid  when they allowed Karim Benzema to find an extra-time winner showcased their struggle to close out games.
HIGH: Final delights…
In the time Tuchel has been in charge at Stamford Bridge, he reached all three domestic cup finals available to him, with FA Cup showpiece appearances in 2021 and 2022, and an EFL Cup trip to Wembley, too.
That saw him stand alone in the history of the club and cemented his reputation as something of a cup specialist.
LOW: …and failures
But on each occasion, he failed to guide the Blues over the line, losing last season to underdogs Leicester City before suffering a pair of defeats against a quadruple-chasing Liverpool side this year.
While he has enjoyed greater success abroad, the struggles at Wembley have haunted his reputation and may well have played a part in his ultimate dismissal.
HIGH:Â Champions of the world
Chelsea’s Champions League triumph qualified them for a shot at two more major prizes last season  and credit is due for Tuchel guiding them to both, allowing them to stake a claim as the greatest club team in world football.
A nervy Super Cup win over Villarreal was aided by Kepa Arrizabalaga’s penalty shootout heroics, while Kai Havertz’ extra-time penalty helped the Blues sink Palmeiras to be crowned Club World Cup winners.
LOW: Lukaku lethargy
If there is to be a player that marks Tuchel’s legacy at Chelsea outside of his Champions League triumph though, it will almost certainly be Romelu Lukaku  one of the worst transfer flops in recent memory.
Returning to Chelsea after a Serie A title win with Inter, hopes were high for the Belgian’s homecoming, but his poor form and difficulties within the German’s system saw him frozen out over the latter half of the season.
Lukaku returned to Inter on a year-long loan over the off-season, with just eight Premier League goals in 26 games, and it remains to be seen whether he ever steps foot back in Stamford Bridge again or, if like Tuchel, his time at the club is now over.
Governor George Natembeya of Trans-Nzoia county, in western Kenya, has refused some top officials entry into a meeting due to lateness.
He ordered for the doors to be closed for anyone arriving past 09:00 local time, the time set for the meeting.
The meeting with County Executive Committee members, equivalent of cabinet ministers, was meant to discuss the county’s development plan for the next five years.
His actions have been lauded by several citizens.
Speaking to the media, George Natembeya stressed on the essence of being punctual.
“When I say we meet at 9am sharp I mean 9am sharp and not 9:01am. I personally arrived here five minutes earlier so everyone should learn to keep time. Past the said time, if you are out, remain there,†Mr Natembeya is quoted as saying by local outlets.
The governor gained a reputation for his strictness in his former role as a government administrator.
The extension was necessary “for the proper conduct of military operations, maintaining order, and for a return of peace and security in this region”, the AFP news agency quoted Togolese Minister of Security Damehame Yark as saying.
Togolese troops are deployed in the north to try to contain a jihadist threat pushing south from Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, where militants linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group operate.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has commended Jack Grealish for his efforts after returning from injury.
Grealish played an hour in his first game back from injury in Tuesday’s 4-0 Champions League win at Sevilla.
At a post-game press conference, Guardiola said “Jack arrived incredible in the pre-season,”
“In the first game against West Ham unfortunately he had a little injury. It’s important for him to have again this 53, 60 minutes. The pitch was uncomfortable for the players. He was so aggressive in the first half, more than aggressive than Phil [Foden] in terms of goal and making the movements in there,” he added.
According to him, the club’s needs Grealish this season.
“Jack will be so important. He played a really good game,” he said.
Due to Grealish’s injury, he did not play any game since City’s 4-0 Premier League win over Bournemouth on August 13
The pressure is on the 26-year-old England international, who underwhelmed in his first season at City after joining from Aston Villa in August last year for £100million.
Grealish played 38 times, scoring six goals in all competitions last season for City, but did not live up to the expectations of his hefty transfer fee, nor play with his typical freedom.
The midfielder started and played 62 minutes against Sevilla, and while he did not score or provide an assist, Guardiola was delighted with his return.
Guardiola was also rapt with the debut of deadline-day signing Manuel Akanji, who only joined team training earlier this week following his move from Borussia Dortmund.
“We are delighted, just training one day and a half with us,” Guardiola said.
“He showed in Dortmund his experience in Europe. A really, really good central defender that City bought to us.
“He played really well, his focus, attention. He has a quality quite similar to Aymer [Laporte], he can break the lines with a pass. He read the spaces really well. I am very pleased for him.”
Erling Haaland grabbed two of City’s four goals, taking his season tally to 12 since his move from Dortmund.
“I think his numbers in his career, not just here, in previous teams is quite similar,” Guardiola told BT Sport. “He has an incredible sense of goal.”
Haaland became the first City player to score on both his Premier League debut and Champions League debut for the club.
The 22-year-old is also the fastest player to 25 goals in Champions League history, coming across 20 games, bettering Ruud van Nistelrooy and Filippo Inzaghi’s mark of 30 games.

Apple is launching its newest iPhone model today, September 7, 2022.
The company will unveil its lineup of iPhone 14s, as well as at least a couple new Apple Watches during a livestreamed showcase.
Apple is likely to announce at least two updated models of its Apple Watch.
The standard model Watch 8 should be a modest design upgrade from the Series 7, but the big change might come in the form of the rumored “rugged†Apple Watch release.
Such a device could feature a beefier, more durable design with enhanced weather resistance and a shatterproof screen.
It is expected that some software announcements, and maybe even some other hardware accessories and tidbits will be made.
It has been the norm that the Apple announces its latest models every September.
Apple has been doing these September events consistently for a decade now, ever since it launched the iPhone 5 in 2012.
RB Leipzig have terminated their agreement with coach Domenico Tedesco, who has been with the club about nine months.
His dismissal stems from a miserable start to the new season.
“RB Leipzig have parted company with Domenico Tedesco with immediate effect. Assistant coaches Andreas Hinkel and Max Urwantschky have also left the club,” read an official club statement posted to social media.
The former Spartak Moscow boss has taken just one win from five in the Bundesliga.
He suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk in their Champions League opener on Tuesday.
It marks the second permanent change in the top job in the space of a year for Leipzig, who sacked now-Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch less than half-a-year into his tenure last December.
Meanwhile, RB Leipzig have noted that they will announce a successor in due course.

Works have begun on a footbridge that collapsed during inauguration in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a charity group in the country, DJCEP, has revealed.
The footbridge collapsed when officials cut a red ribbon during the inauguration ceremony.
The incident caused outrage on social media as users questioned the quality of its construction.
It is believed the footbridge was built by people who lacked the necessary skills and miscalculated the amount of cement needed in the concrete to make it strong enough.
The charity called DJCEP that backed the project now says a new footbridge will be built at the same site that will meet safety standards.
It tweeted pictures of workers demolishing the old structure:
Per reports, the suspect claimed to be a nun running an orphanage.
The police say the children between four and 15 years were abducted in order to be trafficked by the woman.
State Commissioner of Police, Friday Eboka, said investigations revealed that some had been abducted years ago, including a nine-year-old boy who had been taken from a market in 2020.
He said some of the children had recounted to the police their experiences of torture and mistreatment.
He said a further probe into the incident was ongoing with a view to arrest other suspects linked to the crimes.
Meanwhile, the police are working to reunite the children with their parents. Human trafficking is common in Nigeria.
Seven people in South Korea have met their untimely death after they were trapped in an underground car park that was flooded due to Typhoon Hinnamnor.
According to reports, the deceased attempted to move their cars but got hit by incoming torrents.
Fortunately, two people who clung to ceiling pipes for more than 12 hours were rescued.
Typhoon Hinnamnor, the strongest cyclonic storm this year so far, hit South Korea earlier this week.
Rescuers had to wade through metres of brown water to enter the almost completely submerged basement on Tuesday night.
According to news site Yonhap, all nine people were residents of an apartment building who had earlier on Tuesday morning been told by the management office to move their cars from the car park.
The survivors – a man in his 30s and a woman in her 50s – were reported to be in stable condition.

President Yoon Suk-yeol expressed his grief over the drownings, calling it a “disaster”.
“I couldn’t sleep last night because of this tragedy,” he said.
He added that he had designated the city a special disaster zone, and would travel to the region later on Wednesday.
Pohang, the city where the tragedy occurred, has suffered the worst damage across the country. In one area, a beachside hotel collapsed on its foundations during the storm. The resort operators told the BBC no guests had been injured.

At least 10 people have now died as a result of Typhoon Hinnamnor, which swept South Korea’s southern and eastern coasts on Monday and Tuesday, driving huge surf, gale-force winds and heavy rain.
Several other cities across the south – including Busan and Ulsan- are also dealing with wreckage caused by the storm, which ripped up roads, smashed building windows and flattened trees.
South Korea – like many countries in East Asia – has over the past few months endured extreme rains as well as record temperatures.
In early August, it recorded massive downpours which flooded cities, including the capital Seoul. Such floods killed at least eight people, including three who were living in basement apartments.
The deaths prompted Korea’s president to outlaw such units – known as banjiha, which were popularised in the Oscar-winning film Parasite.
Newly sworn-in UK Prime Minister, Liz Truss, has made a major reshuffle hours after succeeding Boris Johnson.
Now at the helm of affairs are key allies of hers.
Kwasi Kwartenghas been made chancellor, James Cleverly becomes foreign secretary and Suella Braverman replaces Priti Patel as home secretary.
One of Ms Truss’s closest friends, Therese Coffey, is now the health secretary and deputy PM.
Her new cabinet will meet ahead of her first Prime Minister’s Questions later.
None of those who backed her defeated rival, Rishi Sunak, will remain in her full cabinet, with Dominic Raab, Grant Shapps, George Eustice and Steve Barclay all returning to the backbenches.
But Ms Truss’s press secretary said the changes would “unify” the Tory Party and pointed to senior roles for five of her leadership rivals: Suella Braverman, Tom Tugendhat as security minister, Kemi Badenoch as trade secretary, Penny Mordaunt as leader of the Commons, and Nadhim Zahawi as chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
For the first time, none of the top four “great offices of state” – prime minister, chancellor, home secretary and foreign secretary – is held by a white man.
Meanwhile, the new PM made her first call to a fellow foreign leader, pledging the UK’s ongoing support to Ukraine in a call with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
No 10 said Ms Truss was also “delighted” to accept an invitation to visit Ukraine.
She later spoke to US President Joe Biden, where the pair discussed the importance of the UK reaching an agreement with the EU over post-Brexit trading rules in Northern Ireland.
Tech companies in the United States of America (USA) that receive funding from the state will be barred from building “advanced technology” facilities in China for 10 years.
US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo made this known when she revealed a $50bn (£43bn) plan aimed at building up the local semiconductor industry.
“We’re going to be implementing the guardrails to ensure those who receive CHIPS funds cannot compromise national security… they’re not allowed to use this money to invest in China, they can’t develop leading-edge technologies in China…. for a period of ten years,” Gina Raimondo while explaining the US Chips and Science Act.
She added that “companies who receive the money can only expand their mature node factories in China to serve the Chinese market.”
This comes at a time when business groups have pushed for more government support in an effort to reduce reliance on China.
They are faced with a global microchip shortage which has slowed production.
The US and China are locked in a long-running dispute over trade and technology.
In August, US President Joe Biden had signed a law committing $280bn (£232bn) to high tech manufacturing and scientific research, amid fears that the US is losing its technological edge to China.
The investments include tax breaks for companies that build computer chip manufacturing plants in the US.
The US currently produces roughly 10% of the global supply of semiconductors, which are key to everything from cars to mobile phones, down from nearly 40% in 1990.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington had opposed the semiconductor bill, calling it reminiscent of a “Cold War mentality.”
Some US chipmakers are already experiencing the impact of Washington’s crackdown on selling US technology to China. Earlier this month, Nvidia and AMD were told by US officials to stop the sale of artificial intelligence chips to China.
Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities called the restrictions a “gut punch” for Nvidia.
“This is really a shot across the bow at China and it’s really going to fan those flames in terms of geopolitical (tensions),” Mr Ives had told the BBC.
Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has admitted that all is not well with the club after their tragic loss on Tuesday against Dinamo Zagreb.
Thomas Tuchel took charge of Chelsea for the 100th time on Tuesday, but there was no celebration after the game.
Chelsea suffered a1-0 Champions League loss against Dinamo Zagreb.
According to Tuchel, “We are clearly not there, where we need to be and where we can be.”
“I am angry at myself, I am angry at our performance. I didn’t see it coming. We need to be much better. We are not finished, we are not happy but I thought we were on a good way. I am surprised by this performance,” he told BT Sport.
He noted that the onus lies on him and the entire club to find a solution to the challenge.
‘A lack of hunger, intensity and determination’
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made his debut for Chelsea after the deadline-day move from Barcelona
Roman Abramovich was seen as the man who changed English football by buying Chelsea in 2003 and then sanctioning an incredible period of spending in the transfer market.
In his 19 years as owner, the Blues won 20 pieces of silverware, including five Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.
But the Russian was forced to sell the club because of his links with President Vladimir Putin and new owner Todd Boehly has followed suit by allowing Tuchel to splash the cash.
Their outlay of almost £300m in the summer transfer window was the highest in Europe, but it seems the big-name signings are so far struggling to gel.
Centre-backs Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana, who together cost more than £100m, are yet to forge a cohesive partnership in defence, while debutant Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will need time to settle in after having his jaw broken in a violent robbery at his house.
England international Raheem Sterling was largely anonymous against Dinamo and £60m Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella was introduced off the bench to little effect.
Chelsea have now failed to keep a clean sheet in their past six games, since opening the Premier League campaign with a 1-0 victory at Everton.
Mislav Orsic, who netted a hat-trick to knock Tottenham out of the Europa League in the 2020-21 season, scored the winning goal for Dinamo in the 13th minute with a beautifully dinked finish.
“It’s an underperformance from us,” said a furious Tuchel. “We have the same story as always.
“We have an OK start, we don’t finish our half-chances, we don’t feel it when the game is already there to put to bed in the first 15-20 minutes.
“Then we concede one counter-attack, which is far too easy, and from there we struggled.”
Asked how many players were at the top of their game, Tuchel replied: “Not a lot at the moment.
“I don’t know where this performance comes from. It’s a lack of hunger, intensity, a lack of determination to win duels, to actually do things on the highest level.
“You cannot expect to win games, not in the Premier League or Champions League. We are not where we want to be.”
Forwards look ‘low on confidence’
Tuchel was booked by the referee in the second half
Tuchel’s frustrations boiled over once again as he was booked by the referee in Croatia for complaining about time-wasting by the opponent.
It’s not the first time this season the German has been in trouble with the officials, having had a heated confrontation with Tottenham boss Antonio Conte after their 2-2 draw last month.
Both men were shown a red card for their actions, but Tuchel was handed a one-game touchline suspension as well as a fine.
He led Chelsea to their second Champions League title just four months after his appointment in January 2021 – and the Super Cup and Club World Cup quickly followed, but last season ended trophyless.
Now after an inconsistent start to the season, Tuchel needs to quickly address his side’s issues.
“Where do we start?” asked former Chelsea forward Joe Cole on BT Sport. “Balance, I think that’s the key. The new guys at the back have really got to pull it together as soon as they can. There’s no flow.
“We could have picked countless incidents where Koulibaly was on the wrong side. For a 31-year-old defender, he really needs to get up to speed.
“At the other end of the pitch, is there a lack of confidence starting to develop? There’s a lot of talk of lack of goals, lack of assists.
“The front three, he made four or five changes in that area, and they all look low on confidence. They are all quality players at Chelsea, but for some reason it’s just not happening for the likes of Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech etc.”
Reigning champions Real Madrid proved their might when they came up against Celtic on Tuesday during their opener.
Despite an encouraging start from Celtic in Gaslow, it was just not enough as they failed to score a goal.
Vinicius Junior, Luka Modric and Eden Hazard showed their class and secured victory for Real Madrid.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side – who lost Karim Benzema to injury in the first half – join Shakhtar Donetsk at the top of Group F after they defeated RB Leipzig.
Celtic travel to Warsaw to face the Ukranian side next Wednesday in their second group game, aiming to get their campaign back on track, after their grand return against European football royalty ended in disappointment.
But it was not a dispiriting night at a bouncing Celtic Park as the Scottish champions made a good impression on the biggest stage.
Ange Postecoglou vowed his team would be true to their front-foot style despite Real’s quality, and it was in evidence straight from kick-off as they pressed Thibaut Courtois into kicking the ball out after 12 seconds. From the throw-in, Liel Abada lashed just wide as the stadium roared its approval.
It was not a flash in the pan either, with the Israeli winger set free in behind the defence after a wonderful pass from Jota, but his rushed shot went straight into Courtois’ hands.
And after McGregor rattled an upright from the edge of the area and half-time substitute Daizen Maeda scuffed a brilliant opportunity from six yards, there was a sense of foreboding that Celtic’s missed chances would haunt them.
Almost inevitably the five-time European champions Modric and Tony Kroos grew in influence and Real did punish Celtic’s profligacy in a beautifully effective four minutes.
A flowing move which started at the feet of Courtois ended with Vinicius planting Federico Valverde’s cross in the bottom corner, before Hazard set up Modric to caress home at the second attempt.
With Celtic suffering from their first-half exertions, Real controlled the ball with greater ease and put together a stunning 33-pass move which culminated in Kroos picking out Dani Carvajal, who stroked across goal for Hazard to tap home their third.
Celtic kept fighting to the end and still looked a threat in flurries, but ultimately they were outclassed in the second-half by the 14-time kings of Europe, whose quality shone through.
Player of the match – Luka Modric
There is little else to say about the Croatian maestro. Modric turns 37 on Friday but shows no sign of slowing down. He ran the show in the second half.
Match stats
Celtic have never won their opening game of a Champions League campaign, with this the 11th time they have failed to do so (D2 L9). Their last three have all been defeats by at least three goals – 0-7 v Barcelona in 2016-17, 0-5 v Paris Saint-Germain in 2017-18 and 0-3 v Real this season.
Only one of the last 28 title-holders have lost their first match of the following season’s competition (W17 D10), with Liverpool losing 2-0 at Napoli in 2019-20.
Since the start of last season, Real have won 100% of their away games in the group stage (4/4) without conceding a single goal, and scoring 12 times themselves.
There were 33 uninterrupted passes in the build-up to Hazard’s goal; since 2003-04 (as far back as data is available), this is the most in the build-up to any of Real Madrid’s 434 goals in the competition in this period.
At 36 years and 362 days, Modric became the oldest player to score for Real in the European Cup/Champions League since Ferenc Puskas in September 1965 (38y 173d v Feyenoord).
Vinicius Junior has been directly involved in 17 goals in his last 18 appearances across all competitions, scoring nine and providing eight assists.
Modric made his 100th Champions League appearance for Real, becoming just the eighth player to reach this milestone for the club (joining Iker Casillas, Raul, Sergio Ramos, Karim Benzema, Roberto Carlos, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo).
Manchester City opened their Champions League campaign with an outstanding performance on Tuesday.
They beat Sevilla four goals to nil at the end of the game.
This was possible for Man City due to the efforts of Erling Haalandwho made the first goal in the game on the 20th minute, with assistance from De Bruyne.
He also scored his second goal during the 67th minute.
In between, England midfielder Foden had given City a healthy cushion in their Group G opener, teasing his marker Nemanja Gudelj before sweeping a left-foot effort into the bottom-right corner of the net.
Ruben Dias underlined the gulf in class between the Premier League champions and the side that finished fourth in La Liga last term late on, side-footing Joao Cancelo’s cross into the middle of an empty net.
“When they were playing better we scored the second one with a brilliant action from Phil [Foden]. Then after it was easier – we gave more passes,” City manager Pep Guardiola told BT Sport.
“Sometimes we want to rush so quick because Erling is there. You have this attraction of him, we want to attack it sometimes. We have to be more patient. I think his numbers across his career, not just here, is quite similar.
“So he has an incredible sense of goal. We have incredible numbers in scoring goals, so we want to continue like that.”
The manner of City’s victory and final scoreline was not unduly flattering, with the visitors dominant throughout.
Julen Lopetegui’s side looked short of attacking ideas and bereft of confidence after their winless start to the La Liga season.
With John Stones and Kyle Walker missing because of minor injuries Guardiola handed a debut to Switzerland defender Manuel Akanji, but aside from a wild first-half effort from Alejandro Gomez, the hosts barely threatened.
The comprehensive win sends City top of their group, with Borussia Dortmund second on goal difference after beating FC Copenhagen 3-0 in their opening match.
Haaland’s incredible start continues
City’s only previous trip to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium came almost seven years ago when Wilfried Bony scored in comfortable 3-1 win.
This performance was even more assured, with Guardiola’s side monopolising possession against their hosts who offered little threat to counter.
Predictably Haaland, who is seen by many as the man who can be the final piece of the jigsaw as City chase European glory, came to the fore again.
The forward maintained his incredible start to his City career as he knocked in goals 11 and 12 from his eight appearances for the club.
Neither were remarkable, but both owed to his exceptional ability to read the game and anticipate the cross from De Bruyne, as well as Bounou’s mistake.
Both his finishes were from no more than eight yards out, again underlining his capacity to operate with clinical efficiency from a limited number of touches (19), and they contributed to City’s biggest ever win against Spanish opposition.
The Football Association has charged Newcastle’s coach Daniel Hodges and Liverpool’s John Achterberg with improper behaviour.
The two coaches had an incident during the Reds’ 2-1 win on 31 August.
Member’s of both teams’ coaching staff clashed after Fabio Carvalho’s 98th-minute winner.
Achterberg, Liverpool’s goalkeeping coach, is also alleged to have used abusive and/or insulting gestures.
Both Daniel Hodges and John Achterberg have until September 8 to respond to the charge.
It follows a review by the FA into incident where a Newcastle staff member appeared to throw an object towards the Liverpool technical area.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe called the late winner a “sickener” after his side had led 1-0 through a debut goal from £60m record signing Alexander Isak.
Roberto Firmino equalised for Liverpool before Carvalho hooked in from close range to win the game with almost the last kick.
Security sources in Nigeria have reported that dozens of Islamist militants have drowned in a river while fleeing ground and aerial assaults in the north-eastern Nigerian state of Borno.
Local militias who fight alongside government troops said they pulled more than 100 bodies from the water and buried them nearby.
The jihadists are reported to have abandoned their positions, rushing into a river swollen by heavy rain.
Some troops attacked villages on the edge of Sambisa Forest where Boko Haram fighters have their hideouts.
Tens of thousands have been killed and about two million displaced by the Islamist insurgency which began in 2009.
It is reported that a bomb that hit a convoy of vehicles in northern Burkina Faso has killed at least 35 civilians.
Authorities say the site is where jihadist rebels are active.
The blast left several others wounded on the road between Djibo and Bourzanga.
Convoys escorted by Burkina Faso’s army are used to deliver supplies to towns that are otherwise cut off by the jihadists.
Civilian casualties and jihadist attacks have increased since the military seized power in Burkina Faso in January.
Burkina Faso, which is one of the poorest countries in the world, has been grappling with a jihadist insurgency that swept in from neighbouring Mali in 2015.
More than 2,000 people have died and some 1.9 million forced to leave their homes.
The plane carrying soon-to-be prime minister Liz Truss has departed RAF Northolt in London, heading for Aberdeen.
She will be then conveyed to Balmoral, where she will meet the Queen after Boris Johnson, who is currently en route to the highlands himself
The new prime minister is expected to make her first speech outside Downing Street and explain what she wants to do in government.
Will she be speaking outside the building, as is customary, or inside if the weather proves too inclement? The forecast in London this afternoon is for more rain in the capital.
Later on, Truss is set to start naming her Cabinet. Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng is expected to become chancellor, while Suella Braverman, the current attorney general, is expected to be named home secretary. Education Secretary James Cleverly is slated to become foreign secretary.
Jacob Rees-Mogg, currently minister for Brexit opportunities and government efficiency, has been tipped to replace Kwarteng as business secretary.
Current Home Secretary Priti Patel and Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries have already said they will step down from their current roles.
The day’s proceedings
Boris Johnson meets the Queen at Balmoral Castle where he will offer his resignation as prime minister. At this point, there is a short period – normally a matter of minutes – with no prime minister.
It is then Liz Truss’s turn to meet the monarch, having also made the 500-mile trip to Balmoral. The Queen will ask her to form a government. Truss will be appointed through a ceremony called “kissing hands” – though there’s no actual kissing involved.
Having been formally appointed, Truss returns to London.
The Juventus midfielder is recovering from a knee surgery after suffering an injury in July this year.
Due to the injury, he has not played this season.
Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri said “We will realistically get him back in January.”
He revealed that “This morning Pogba trained for the second time, but then stopped, and it was then decided that he undergo surgery.”
Juventus later said the surgery – selective external arthroscopic meniscectomy – was “a complete success”.
The Serie A season will pause after games on 13 November for the first winter World Cup and restart again in January.
Asked if Pogba would be ready for France’s World Cup defence, Allegri added: “The World Cup is not my problem, Juventus’ problem is that he comes back in January.”
Pogba rejoined the Serie A side this summer after his contract with Manchester United expired.
He scored in the 4-1 win over Croatia in 2018 as France won the World Cup for a second time.
Europe has accused Russia of using gas supplies to blackmail European countries because of the Ukraine conflict, which Moscow denies.
Wholesale prices have been very volatile in recent weeks. They fell sharply last week when Germany announced that its gas storage facilities were filling up faster than expected.
Although the UK is not reliant on Nord Stream 1 for its gas, the Kremlin’s decision to squeeze supplies to Europe has driven up the overall cost of wholesale gas. Prices in the UK rose as much as 35% on Monday.
The overall increase has been behind the spike in the energy bill price cap for consumers in England, Wales and Scotland.
Tory leadership hopeful Liz Truss has promised to announce a plan to deal with high energy bills if she becomes prime minister. Her rival, Rishi Sunak, has said he will target further payments aimed at the poorest.
However, UK businesses are not protected by a price cap and, last week, the British Chambers of Commerce warned firms would “close their doors this winter” if they were not given support with soaring bills.
Energy expert Bill Farren-Price told the BBC’s Today programme that the “crunch moment” would come later in the year if demand is particularly high for gas and is going to exceed what can be imported.
He added that looking action on energy bills would be the top priority for the incoming prime minister.
A number of European governments have revealed plans to help businesses and consumers cope with surging energy costs. On Sunday, Germany announced a €65bn (£56.2bn) package which includes one-off payments to the most vulnerable and tax breaks to energy-intensive firms.
Over the weekend, Sweden and Finland also announced multi-billion pound packages to support energy companies.
‘War winter’
Other European ministers have accused Russia of using energy supplies as an economic weapon against those supporting Ukraine.
Moscow has denied it is deliberately restricting exports in the run-up to winter, pushing up costs for households and businesses.
State energy firm Gazprom said that an oil leak in a turbine on the Nord Stream 1 pipeline was behind the closure.
But this has been disputed by the European Union and Siemens itself, the German firm which maintains the turbine.
“Such leaks do not normally affect the operation of a turbine and can be sealed on site. It is a routine procedure within the scope of maintenance work,” Siemens said in a statement.
Gazprom made the announcement on shutting the pipeline on Friday shortly after the G7 nations agreed to cap the price of Russian oil in support of Ukraine.
The introduction of a price cap means countries that sign up to the policy will be permitted to purchase only Russian oil and petroleum products transported via sea that are sold at or below the price cap.
But Russia says it will not export to countries that participate in the cap.
Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said that Russia’s actions could not only risk leading to a “war winter”, but could potentially have a knock-on effect on businesses and its wider economy.
The Nord Stream 1 pipeline stretches from the Russian coast near St Petersburg to north-eastern Germany and can carry up to 170 million cubic metres of gas a day.
It is owned and operated by Nord Stream AG, whose majority shareholder is Gazprom.
This is not the first time since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that the pipeline has been closed.
In July, Gazprom cut off supplies completely for 10 days, citing “a maintenance break”. It restarted again 10 days later, but at a much reduced level.
As Europe struggles with scarce supplies after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Germany has announced a €65bn (£56.2bn) package of measures to ease the threat.
The package from Germany will include one-off payments to the most vulnerable and tax breaks to energy-intensive businesses.
There is rising energy costs in Europe. Energy prices have soared since the February invasion because energy was being provided by Russia.
In his nightly address on Saturday, he said Russia was preparing a “decisive energy attack on all Europeans”, and only unity among European countries would offer protection.
And in a BBC interview broadcast on Sunday, his wife Olena said that if support for Ukraine was strong the crisis would be shorter. She reminded Britons that while rising living costs were tough, Ukrainians were paying with their lives.
According to website Politico, European Union officials have warned there is likely to be a crunch point in the coming months when countries start to feel acute economic pain while also still being asked to help the Ukrainian military and humanitarian effort.
There are already small signs of discontent, with protesters taking to the streets of the Czech capital Prague on Sunday, rallying against high energy prices and calling for an end to sanctions against Russia. Police said about 70,000 people, mainly from far-right and far-left groups were in attendance.
Meanwhile, several hundred protesters gathered at Lubmin in north-eastern Germany, the terminal of the Nord Stream gas pipeline from Russia.
They were calling for the commissioning of Nord Stream 2, a new pipeline which was about to go online but was blocked by the German government after the invasion.
Two days ago, Russia said it was suspending gas exports to Germany through the already operating Nord Stream 1 pipeline indefinitely.
The stand-off with Russia has forced countries like Germany to find supplies elsewhere, and its stores have increased from less than half full in June to 84% full today.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told journalists Germany would get through the winter, adding that Russia was “no longer a reliable energy partner”.
He said the government would make one-off payments to pensioners, people on benefits and students. There would also be caps on energy bills.
Some 9,000 energy-intensive businesses would receive tax breaks to the tune of €1.7bn.
A windfall tax on energy company profits would also be used to mitigate bills, Mr Scholz said.

The latest package brings the total spent on relief from the energy crisis to almost €100bn, which compares to about €300bn spent on interventions to keep the German economy afloat during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Countries across Europe are considering similar measures.
UK Tory leadership hopeful Liz Truss has said she will announce a plan to deal with energy costs within a week if she becomes prime minister on Tuesday.
And EU energy ministers are due to meet on 9 September to discuss how to ease the burden of energy prices across the bloc.
A document released about the meeting says the agenda will include price caps for gas and emergency liquidity support for energy market participants, Reuters news agency reported.

Recently, the Ghana National Fire Service has revealed that 20 fire outbreaks were recorded on a daily basis during the first half of the year.
In total, 3,678 fire outbreaks have been recorded, representing a 21.38% increase from 3030 fire cases recorded during the same period in 2021.
Thirty-five lives have been lost so far this year to fire outbreaks.
According to the Service, the harmattan weather experienced from January to March played a role in the number of fire cases recorded as well as the non-adherence to fire safety precautions.
Causes of the fire outbreaks included “electrical faults which stem from circuit overload; arcing: short circuits; inferior cables; compromised or poorly done electrical installations; over-aged wires and earthing problems: Gas leakages; unattended cooking: unattended lit candles; mosquito coils: matches and poorly done hot works from welding and deliberate acts.â€
Although the Ghana National Fire Service has assured its commitment to protecting the lives of citizens, it has entreated the public to remain cautious when dealing with inflammable objects.
“The Service notwithstanding this increase in the number of fire and related incidents in the first half year of 2022 is poised with the support of the public to assiduously work to reduce the rate of fires through its continuous and intensified public fire safety education,†the Service said.
