  • Trump ideology threatens US democracy – Joe Biden

United States President Joe Biden has stated that those in support of Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (Maga) agenda are a threat to the country’s democracy.

Speaking in a primetime speech in Pennsylvania, he said “Maga forces are determined to take this country backwards.”

The Democratic president delivered his speech on Thursday night from Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where the US Declaration of Independence was signed. He picked up his 2020 campaign theme of restoring the “soul of America”.

According to President Biden, his comment is not to condemn all 74 million Americans who voted for Mr Trump two years ago.

“Not every Republican, not even a majority of Republicans, are Maga Republicans. But there’s no question that the Republican party today is dominated, driven and intimidated by Donald Trump and the Maga Republicans, and that is a threat to this country,” he said.

Mr Biden said Trump supporters thought of the mob who stormed the US Capitol last year as patriots rather than insurrectionists.

“For a long time,” he continued, “we told ourselves that American democracy is guaranteed. But it’s not. We have to defend it. Protect it. Stand up for it. Each and every one of us.”

In response, Mr Trump posted a defence of his Maga slogan and said his rival had “threatened America”.

Throughout Mr Biden’s speech someone was heard heckling and sounding a bullhorn, according to a BBC reporter at the scene.

Mr Biden addressed the disruption twice, saying the second time: “They’re entitled to be outrageous. This is a democracy.”

The president, who came into office pledging to unite the country, has recently sharpened his rhetoric against supporters of Mr Trump.

Last week Mr Biden equated what he called “extreme” Republicans with “semi-fascism”.

The duelling speeches come two months before mid-term elections, which will decide the power balance in Washington.

Top Republican Kevin McCarthy gave his own address, saying Mr Biden had “severely wounded America’s soul”.

    Republican calls for Biden apology

Mr McCarthy, who is Republican minority leader in the US House of Representatives, spoke shortly beforehand from Mr Biden’s hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania.

The California congressman said the president “has chosen to divide, demean, and disparage his fellow Americans”.

“Why? Simply because they disagree with his policies. That is not leadership.”

He called on Mr Biden to “apologise for slandering tens of millions of Americans as fascists”.

The top Republican said the Biden presidency had saddled America with soaring inflation, open borders, Covid school shutdowns that damaged children’s learning, the “botched” withdrawal from Afghanistan, and the deadliest national crime wave in two decades.

“In the past two years,” he said, “Joe Biden has launched an assault on the soul of America, on its people, on its laws, on its most sacred values. He has launched an assault on our democracy. His policies have severely wounded America’s soul, diminished America’s spirit and betrayed America’s trust.”

Mr Trump added his own criticism of Mr Biden’s speech in a post on his Truth Social platform.

“If he doesn’t want to Make America Great Again, which through words, action, and thought, he doesn’t, then he certainly should not be representing the United States of America,” he wrote.

  • Chelsea agree deal for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Guillem Balague

Chelsea have agreed a deal in principle worth £12m, plus defender Marcus Alonso, for Barcelona striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Guillem Balague has said.

The 33-year-old would be Chelsea’s seventh summer signing.

He had a buyout clause of 100m euros (£83.4m) in his contract, but has only played eight minutes this season.

Aubameyang scored 13 goals in 24 appearances for Barca after joining the Spanish club in February from Arsenal.

The former Gabon international scored 92 goals in 163 games in all competitions for Arsenal, but left on a free transfer after falling out with manager Mikel Arteta.

That departure played a big part in the Gunners documentary All or Nothing.

Only four players have scored more Premier League goals than Aubameyang’s total of 68 in the period since 31 January 2018 – the date he joined Arsenal.

Aubameyang worked with Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund between 2015 and 2017.

He scored 79 goals in 95 games under the German, 38 more than he netted under any other manager.

This summer the Blues have brought in French defender Wesley Fofana for a fee in the region of £70m, England forward Raheem Sterling from Manchester City for £50m, Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli for £34m, English midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa for £20m, Spain left-back Marc Cucurella from Brighton for £60m and Italian midfielder Cesare Casadei from Inter Milan.

A deal for Aubameyang would mean Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly will have spent almost £250m in his first transfer window since buying the club from Roman Abramovich.

  • Stench from Lake Kuk in Cameroon causes panic among residents

Mephitis emanating from Lake Kuk in North-West Cameroon has caused panic among some of the local villagers, according to BBC reports.

Villagers who went to investigate the smell found that the water had changed colour.

The Kuk village is not far from Lake Nyos, where a sudden gas escape from beneath the water in 1986 killed more than 1,600 people and thousands of livestock.

Already, some villagers have left Kuk, but others have chosen to remain.

Those currently present have linked the natural phenomenon to the recent death of a traditional ruler. In other words, the ancestors were responding to his passing.

Kahn Elvis, a geology expert from the University of Yaoundé, said the smell could have been caused by the sudden release of magma from beneath the lake’s surface.

The local authorities have urged people to be calm and said the strange smell and change in water colour was due to the recent heavy rains, Journal du Cameroon reports.

  • Ghana’s Osman Bukari sad over Red Star’s draw against Partizan

Ghana’s Osman Bukari who plays for Red Star has been left heart broken after his side’s draw against Partizan in Belgrade derby in Serbian top-flight.

Osman Bukari scored the opening goal in the game for Red Star on Wednesday evening.

However, Bebras Natcho scored from the penalty spot 11 minutes into the second half, a goal that ended the game in a stalemate.

According to Bukari, the final result of the game managed to take away the joy he had for scoring for Red Star.

“I’m happy about the goal, but we didn’t win and that’s why I’m sad. The goal was nice, I practiced shots like this in training yesterday… Then the ball went over the goal, but now it was a perfect shot. I think this is the most beautiful goal in my life,” he said.

Bukari scored on the 26th minute to give the away team the lead.

He noted that his side can learn from their mistakes to better themselves.

“There are positive impressions when it comes to the derby, but I am sure that it will be even better when we are the hosts. I think we can do better than this, we need to act more as a team. The pressing was not good, we have to be better in that segment, but now we are going to rest and focus on the next match that is waiting for us already at the weekend,” he added.

In Bukari’s first season in Serbia, the 22-year-old Ghanaian forward has four goals and one assist in league five matches.

  • US interest rate affecting Asia stock markets

Shares in Asia have seen a drastic fall after chairman of the US central bank, Jerome Powell, revealed that interest raise will be adjusted until inflation is tackled.
Earlier, he revealed that the US’ Federal Reserve’s policies will cause “some pain to households and businesses”.
Since the adjustment, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index on Monday closed 2.7% lower in Tokyo.

Kospi in South Korea and Australia’s ASX 200 were both down by around 2%, while the Hang Seng in Hong Kong was 0.8% lower.

Before this development, the main share indexes in New York each fell by more than 3% on Friday.

During a highly-anticipated speech at a conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Mr Powell said the Federal Reserve was likely to continue raising interest rates in the coming months and could keep them high “for some time”.

He said that, while the hikes would come at a cost to American households and businesses, “a failure to restore price stability would mean far greater pain”.

Inflation in the world’s largest economy by gross domestic product (GDP) is at a four-decade high.

“Fed Chair Powell went for the jugular, conveying (an) unflinching assault on inflation,” Vishnu Varathan, head of economics and strategy at Mizuho Bank, said in a note.

“Justification for this unrelentingly hawkish posture was as plain as it was unequivocal,” he added.

Investors are also concerned that the Chinese economy is slowing, Dan Wang, chief economist at Hang Seng Bank China, told the BBC.

“The economic perspective has worsened in China due to prolonged Covid control, which means further policy rate cuts have to take place. Domestic demand is too weak without further rate cuts in China,” she said.

China’s central bank cut its lending rates earlier this month after economic growth slowed sharply in the second quarter of this year.

Power shortages in the Sichuan province have also hit major manufacturers of cars and smartphones in China.

Over the weekend, official data showed that profits of China industrial firms had fallen by 1.1% from January to July, from a year earlier.

A crisis in the country’s property market is also proving to be a major challenge to government efforts to keep the economy growing.

  • EU to face awful winters without gas cap

European Union countries are expected to face five to 10 terrible winters should not be done to reduce natural gas prices, Belgium’s Energy Minister has said.

Minister Tinne Van der Straeten in a Twitter post wrote “The next five to 10 winters will be terrible if we don’t do anything.”

She therefore added that “We must act at source, at European level, and work to freeze gas prices.”

Calls are mounting for an EU-wide cap on the price of gas and its decoupling from the price of electricity.

EU states have been struggling with huge energy price hikes since key gas supplier Russia invaded Ukraine in February, triggering sanctions.

Russia, which supplied the EU with 40% of its gas last year, has in turn restricted supplies.

Electricity prices have also been soaring and have reached record highs this week.

“We have to stop this madness that is happening right now on energy markets,” Austria’s Chancellor Karl Nehammer said.

Electricity prices must go down, he said, calling on the EU to decouple electricity and gas prices.

“We cannot let [Russian President Vladimir] Putin determine the European electricity price every day,” he added.

Natural gas is still widely used to generate electricity. Because gas prices have risen, this costs more.

Significantly, this price is used when buying electricity wholesale even when it comes from much cheaper renewable resources.

Germany – the largest importer of Russian gas in 2020 – has been racing to bolster its gas reserves before winter despite Russia cutting deliveries.

Its aim is to fill its gas capacity to 85% by October. It has implemented energy-saving measures to do so.

Economy Minister Robert Habeck said such measures – along with buying gas from alternative suppliers – had enabled Germany to fulfil its goal sooner than anticipated.

He estimated that the 85% target could be reached by the start of September.

  • Al Hilal beat Kotoko 5-0 in second friendly game

Asante Kotoko were thrashed by Sudanese giants Al Hilal on Friday during their second pre-season match.

At the end of the game, the Ghana Premier League giant lost by five goals to nil.

The club arrived in Sudan last weekend for the second phase of pre-season training ahead of the start of the 2022/23 football season.

Last Tuesday, Asante Kotoko played the first of four friendly matches to be played while on the trip.

The Porcupine Warriors lost 2-0 at the end of the 90 minutes.

Following the the defeat, Asante Kotoko will play two additional friendly matches before returning to Ghana.

The next game will be against Simba SC from Tanzania on Sunday.

  • Nuclear treaty agreement blocked by Russia over Ukraine reference

Russia has objected the adoption of a joint declaration by a United Nations conference on nuclear disarmament.

Russia noted that it has “grave concern” over military activities around Ukraine’s nuclear plants, in particular Zaporizhzhia.

The draft section also remarked on “the loss of control by the competent Ukrainian authorities over such locations as a result of those military activities, and their profound negative impact on safety”.

Russia’s representative, Igor Vishnevetsky, said the draft final text lacked “balance”.

“Our delegation has one key objection on some paragraphs which are blatantly political in nature,” he said – adding that other countries also disagreed with the text.

The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which is reviewed by its 191 signatories every five years, aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said she was “deeply disappointed” at the lack of agreement.

“Russia obstructed progress by refusing to compromise on proposed text accepted by all other states,” she said.

The US representative, Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins, said the US “deeply regrets this outcome, and even more so on Russia’s actions that led us here today”.

There was an impasse in 2015 during the last review.

The 2022 meeting, which had been due in 2020, was delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The failure to agree a joint declaration followed a four-week conference in New York.

The final document needed approval of all countries at the conference. A number of countries, including the Netherlands and China, expressed disappointment that no consensus had been reached.

The Dutch said they were “content with the useful discussions”, but “very disappointed that we have not reached consensus”.

China’s ambassador, meanwhile, said despite the lack of agreement, the process was “an important practice of common security and genuine multilateralism”.

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons regretted that “in a year when a nuclear-armed state invaded a non-nuclear armed state, a meeting of nearly all countries in the world failed to take action on nuclear disarmament”, while the Washington-based Arms Control Association said the conference represented a “missed opportunity to strengthen the treaty and global security”.

The Non-Proliferation Treaty, backed by 190 countries in 1970, commits countries which signed up – including the US, Russia, France the UK and China – to reducing their stockpiles and bars others from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Last week, the Zaporizhzhia plant was temporarily disconnected from the power grid, raising fears of a possible radiation disaster.

Russia’s military took control of the plant, the largest nuclear plant in Europe, in early March, but it is still being operated by Ukrainian staff under difficult conditions.

The UN’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is expected to organised a trip to the Zaporizhzhia plant in the coming days to inspects facilities there.

Last week, Russia said it would allow IAEA inspectors to visit the plant.

  • I want Ajax to sell me with the highest bid ever for a player in Eredivisie – Antony

Brazil international Antony has reiterated his willingness to leave Ajax to a club that provides the highest bid.

According to the 22-year-old, he made this known to Ajax during a meeting after he rejected a proposal for a contract renewal.

For him, Ajax has not shown willingness to accept his decision to leave the club.

“During the window months, meetings continued and I also received a proposal from Ajax for contract renewal. I made it clear once again: I want to leave the club.

“Today, in a meeting with the club, I expressed my old interest in leaving the club, only this time with a considerable offer on the table. Others had already arrived. Ajax always refused and hindered by exit with the argument that they only have five days to replace me.

“I’m not asking Ajax to release me, I’m asking Ajax to sell me with the highest bid ever for a player in the Eredivisie. I’ve been insisting on this theme since February so that the club could rebuild the team with peace of mind.

Eric ten Hag’s Manchester United are interested in signing Antony and have proposed a £76million (€90m) offer.

But according to reports, Ajax have turned down the offer.

The shock of seeing such an amount turned down has forced Antony to go public with his frustration.

He told Fabrizio Romano: “Since February of this year, my agents came to Amsterdam to inform Ajax of my desire to leave the club to face a new challenge and that some interested clubs would arrive and with them certainly a great offer.

Ten Hag has not been shy about his desire to bolster United’s attack, and Antony has seemingly been near the top of his list for a while.

Brazil international Antony was a key player under new United boss Erik ten Hag during his time in Amsterdam and has been continuously linked with a move to Old Trafford since April.

Meanwhile, Antony has urged Ajax fans to understand his decision to leave the club.

“People need to listen to me and understand that my motivation moves me towards happiness. I need this to continue performing at a high level. Ajax will always be in my heart.

“I hope Ajax fans understand me because the future for a football player is a totally uncertain thing and the opportunities can be unique.

“My message is one of gratitude for Ajax, club and fans,” he added.

  • Russia to build two nuclear reactors in Hungary - Foreign Minister

Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, has announced that plans are underway for the construction of two new nuclear reactors in the country.

According to Peter Szijjarto, Russian nuclear power giant Rosatom will be constructing these reactors in Hungary in some weeks to come.

“Let the construction begin!” said Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto in a Facebook post.

The deal, reached between Russia and the EU state in 2014, aims to expand the existing Paks nuclear plant.

“This is a big step, an important milestone,” Mr Szijjarto said in a Facebook post quoted by AFP news agency.

“In this manner we will ensure Hungary’s energy security in the long term and protect Hungarians from wild swings in energy prices,” he added.

Russia’s nuclear industry has not been subjected to EU sanctions over its bloody invasion of Ukraine.

Moves to isolate and sanction its oil and gas exports have not been unconditionally supported by Hungary.

The Paks site currently generates 40% of Hungary’s electricity supply.

With the additional two reactors, the nuclear power station – currently made up of four Soviet-built reactors – will see its capacity more than double.

According to Peter Szijjarto, the nuclear reactors could be ready for service by 2030.

The controversial €12.5bn (£10.6bn; $12.4bn) project is largely financed by Russia.

In the wake of the war in Ukraine, many EU states have been trying to lessen their dependence on Russian supplies of energy.

  • Newcastle United sign Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad

Sweden striker Alexander Isak joins Newcastle after his side, Real Sociedad, reached a long-term deal with the former.

Per reports, the deal is worth £60m.

Earlier, Newcastle head coach, Eddie Howe, revealed that the club are closing in on the signing of Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak.

“It’s not completed. We hope to get it done. Yes, fingers crossed. There’s no guarantee with these things because we’re in other people’s hands, but hopefully.” he said,

The 22-year-old becomes the Magpies’ fourth signing of the summer after Matt Targett, Nick Pope and Sven Botman.

Alexander Isak is excited about the move. He noted that Newcastle plays good football, thus wants to be a part of the club.

“It was a big, big decision for me but it is a decision I am really happy with,” he said.

“It is a great, historical club that I think anyone would like to play for, with amazing fans. They were a big part of why I came here – and also the club’s project, which is one that I really believe in.

“You always want to go into a team and know how they play. I think Newcastle play very attractive football and I want to be a part of that.”

Isak scored 44 goals in 132 appearances for Sociedad, and has nine in 37 caps for his country.

Ex-Borussia Dortmund player Isak’s arrival at St James’ Park boosts Newcastle’s attacking options given the injury record of Callum Wilson, who is currently out with a hamstring strain.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: “I’m very excited that Alexander has chosen to join us. He is an outstanding talent who is capable of making a big contribution to the team.

“He is technically very good, with a mix of attributes that will complement us, but he is also at a great age to grow with this club.

“I want to thank the club’s owners and transfer committee for bringing Alexander to Newcastle. We are all delighted to have him on board.”

Earlier on Friday, Howe said Wilson’s hamstring injury was “not serious” but the 30-year-old striker will be out “for a couple of weeks”.

Howe also said he did not think Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka was in talks with Manchester United over a move.

Reports have linked the Slovakian with a move to Old Trafford after he was displaced as club number one by Nick Pope.

“I don’t think he’s in talks with Manchester United,” said Howe. “There has been contact between the clubs, but that will be something that will continue probably, to happen, as in the discussions.

“But in terms of an actual final outcome, I’m very reluctant to lose any important players to the group, so that’s a decision that will be out of my hands.”

  • Over 33 million affected by historic rains in Pakistan – Climate Minister

Pakistan’s Climate Minister, Sherry Rehman, has revealed that more than 33 million lives have been negatively impacted by floods due to rain in the country.

Sherry Rehman noted that the country is now going through its eighth monsoon cycle although “normally, the country only has three to four cycles of rain”.

“The percentages of super flood torrents are shocking,” she said.

She said the government is battling with a “climate-induced humanitarian disaster of epic proportions”.

Since June, more than 900 people have died in monsoon rains and floods that continue to break weather records.

Since the summer season began, multiple monsoon cycles have lashed Pakistan, causing huge floods that have destroyed over 400,000 homes across the country.

At least 184,000 people have been displaced, and forced to evacuate to relief camps in this time, the UN’s disaster relief agency, OCHA (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) said in its own update on Thursday.

It noted a lower figure – of three million people – who had been affected by the natural disaster so far.

However, Pakistan’s Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal had earlier said that around 30 million people – or about 15% of the population – had been affected.

The cash-strapped nation has called for additional international aid.

Southern Pakistan has been hardest hit by the rains, particularly the province of Sindh which has received nearly eight times its average August rainfall.

Ms Rehman on Thursday said local authorities there had asked for one million tents to house displaced people.

One woman living in Hyderabad, Sindh’s second-largest city told Reuters news agency: “We are living in a rickshaw with our children because the roof of our mud house is leaking.

“Where can we go? The gutters are overflowing, and our courtyard is filled up with sewage. Our houses and alleys have turned into a floating garbage bin.”

  • Trump’s estate: Judge orders release of redacted search court papers

A US judge has ordered for the release of a redacted version of court papers that convinced him to authorise a search of Donald Trump’s estate.

The redacted version of court papers are to be provided by the investigators.

According to the search warrant, the FBI wanted to see if Mr Trump committed a crime by improperly handling government records when he took them from the White House to Mar-a-Lago as his administration ended.

The public version of the affidavit, a document that includes the evidence gathered by prosecutors, could reveal new details about the inquiry.

The Department of Justice had opposed releasing an uncensored version amid its ongoing investigation.

The FBI search was part of a probe into the potential mishandling of documents.

US presidents are required to transfer documents and emails to the National Archives when they leave office.

The former US president has denied wrongdoing and insists the classified files that investigators say were found in Florida had already been declassified by himself.

On Thursday, US Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart ordered the affidavit to be released with redactions by noon (17:00 BST) on Friday.

He said prosecutors had demonstrated a “compelling reason” to black out parts of the document, which would reveal the identities of witnesses, law enforcement agents and uncharged parties, as well as “the investigation’s strategy, direction, scope, sources and methods”.

His ruling came shortly after the justice department confirmed that it had submitted to the judge a copy of the affidavit with proposed redactions.

Even in redacted form, the affidavit could provide clues as to why Mr Trump allegedly took classified documents with him in the chaotic final days of his presidency and what he did with them while they were stored in Palm Beach.

The rest may have to wait for when – or if – any criminal charges are filed.

The warrant itself was released on 12 August alongside an inventory of recovered items that showed 11 sets of classified files were removed from the estate.

Several news organisations have applied for the affidavit to be unsealed, citing public interest given the historic nature of the search of a former president’s home.

The Department of Justice, however, had resisted the move, arguing that its release could cause “irreparable damage” to its continuing investigation. It also said the necessary redactions would render the document “meaningless”.

Mr Trump and his lawyers – who have characterised the Mar-a-Lago search as politically motivated and unlawful – have called for the unredacted affidavit to be released.

A spokesman for Mr Trump, Taylor Budowich, said that efforts to “hide” its contents were “cynical” and could be used to “hide government corruption”.

Earlier this week, Mr Trump’s legal team asked that the investigation be frozen and that an independent third-party attorney, known as a special master, be brought in to oversee the documents that the FBI took during the search.

  • Chelsea haven’t bid £60m for Gordon – Lampard

Everton manager Frank Lampard has once again clarified that Chelsea have made no official official move to have Anthony Gordon.

It was earlier reported that Chelsea have made a £60million bid for Anthony Gordon.

But according to Lampard, “They haven’t bid £60m, so let’s not talk about a number that’s not there.”

Lampard said at a press conference on Friday ahead of the Premier League clash against Brentford.

He indicated that Everton are pleased with Gordon’s output and plan to continue working with him in future.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to work with fantastic young players in my time with Derby, in my time with Chelsea, seeing them develop, now becoming internationals with England, Champions League winners, worth triple-digit figures in their personal values. Anthony is in that bracket. He’s been a pleasure to work with and he’s ours, an Everton boy, he plays for us, the crowd relate to him,” explained.

He is of the position that due to the 21-year-old’s efficiency, most clubs are ready to engage him.

Nonetheless, Lampard noted that as it stands now, Gordon plays for Everton.

“He’s our player and remains so. He’s in the squad for tomorrow. He’s a huge player for us. I said it last week, not only is he a big value for the club, if you want to talk financially, but more importantly for me he is a big value to the squad and the team,” he added.

  • Tanzania minister’s son, James Simbachawene, fined for ramming cars

James Simbachawene, who is the son of Tanzanian state minister, George Simbachawene, has fined a total of 250,000 Tanzanian shillings ($107, £90) thrusting cars last week.

He has been fined for the offences of reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving an uninsured vehicle..

Per reports, James Simbachawene kept bragging about his father’s influence while engaging in such actions.

The 24-year-old was arrested after a video of the incident in Dar es Salaam, Kinondoni area, went viral.

His father had asked the authorities to take full legal action against him, adding that he is “a grown man now”.

  • ‘There’s no problem at all’ – PSG President on Mbappe-Neymar penalty controversy

Paris Saint-Germain President Nasser Al-Khelaifi has stated that there is no bad blood between his star players; Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.

“There’s no problem at all. I mean, I can argue with my brother, or sister, it’s normal. But the media, because it’s Kylian Mbappé… they are good friends and they are very good team-mates. And they will always be good team-mates,” he said.

The controversy began after Paris Saint-Germain’s 5-2 win against Montpellier on August 13.

During the match, Neymar decided to assume penalty duties following an earlier miss from the spot by Mbappe.

Per reports, Mbappe seemed frustrated with some teammates. The matter allegedly boiled over in the dressing rooms afterwards, requiring Sergio Ramos to step in and keep the peace.

Soon after, Neymar was seen to have liked a tweet that said Mbappe’s new contract with the French giants had him acting like the “owner of PSG”.

But according to Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the media is blowing the matter out of proportion.

“No, no. There’s no problem at all. I think it’s really… I mean, I think it’s you making a problem especially, and the media,” he said.

After the Champions League draw on Thursday where Paris Saint-Germain landed in Group H with Juventus, Benfica and Maccabi Haifa Al-Khelaifi was adamant that any supposed rift between his superstars was being overblown.

Through three games of the Ligue 1 season, Paris Saint-Germain are the only team with three wins, and have done so with 17 goals for, and only three against.

“It’s a good start, it’s just the start,” Al-Khelaifi said. “They need to work harder and there’s a lot of things to work on and to improve, because the season is too long, it’s just the start. We are very happy with the start.”

  • Europa Conference League: West Ham beat Viborg to cruise into group stage

West Ham secured a victory against Viborg on Thursday to reach the group stage of the Europa Conference League.

The Hammers sent Virborg packing with three goals with the latter being unable to equalise.

The aggregate read 6:1 in favour of West Ham.

Leading 3-1 from the first leg, David Moyes’ side extended their lead on aggregate through Italy forward Gianluca Scamacca in Denmark.

Said Benrahma made it 2-0 on the night before Tomas Soucek added a third.

The Hammers will discover their group-stage opponents on Friday, with Moyes’ side now facing six Europa Conference League games between 8 September and 3 November.

    Hammers cruise into group stage

This was a welcome win for Moyes and his players, who are bottom of the Premier League table without a point or a goal.

They have lost to Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and Brighton but made easy work of seeing off Viborg, who are sixth in Denmark’s top flight.

Scamacca struck at the near post from a cross for his second goal in West Ham colours since joining in a £30.5m deal from Sassuolo last month.

Algeria winger Benrahma raced onto Maxwel Cornet’s forward pass to slot into the far corner to make it 2-0.

The Czech Republic midfielder Soucek struck from close range to seal an emphatic aggregate win for last season’s Europa League semi-finalists.

  • Hundreds of Nigerian Benin Bronzes to be returned by Germany

Nigeria and Germany have reached an agreement that enables the latter to transfer ownership of 512 Benin Bronzes to the former.

Foundation of Prussian Cultural Heritage (SPK) and Nigeria’s National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) signed the agreement.

The transfer has been hailed as the largest return of cultural artefacts looted from the continent in the 19th Century.

A statement by the Foundation revealed that the first objects will be returned to Nigeria this year from the Ethnological Museum in Berlin.

“Around a third of the objects transferred will remain in Berlin on loan for an initial period of ten years and will be exhibited in the Humboldt Forum,” it added.

The Benin Bronzes consist of thousands of metal sculptures and ivory carvings seized from the West African kingdom of Benin – in what is today Edo State in southern Nigeria – by a British military force in 1897.

Most ended up in European museums after being sold by businessmen and dealers.

In April 2021, the German government said it wanted to give back hundreds of Benin Bronzes.

  • SA gov’t gives $882,352 to Banyana Banyana squad over 2022 WAFCON victory

The South African women’s national team, Banyana Banyana, has received a sum of $882,352 from the South Africa government for their victory at the 2022 WAFCON tournament in Morocco.

The amount is to be shared among the squad that fought for victory, Sport, Arts & Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa said.

“I’m pleased to announce $882,352 dollars (R15m) payout from the government. The disbursement of the payments has already begun,” Minister Nathi Mthethwa announced.

Banyana Banyana beat the host country, Morocco, at the finals to lift the WAFCON trophy for the very first time.

The names of the playing body and the technical team have been inked into the history books of South African football and will be remembered forever.

  • World narrowly avoided radiation accident, Zelensky says

President Volodomyr Zelensky has revealed that Europe nearly witnessed a radiation disaster when a Russian-occupied nuclear plant was disconnected from Ukraine’s power grid on Thursday.

He noted that the Zaporizhzhia plant was able to operate safely owing to back-up electricity kicking in.

“If the diesel generators hadn’t turned on, if the automation and our staff of the plant had not reacted after the blackout, then we would already be forced to overcome the consequences of the radiation accident,” President Zelensky warned on Thursday night.

There is growing concern over fighting near the complex, which is the largest nuclear plant in Europe.

The damage was caused by fires which Ukraine’s state nuclear agency said had interfered with power lines connecting the plant on Thursday, temporarily cutting Zaporizhzhia off from the national grid for the first time in its history.

“As a result, the station’s two working power units were disconnected from the network,” Kyiv officials said.

The state nuclear company said work was under way on Friday to try to reconnect the reactors to the grid. Zaporizhzhia’s other four reactors have been out of action for most of the war.

Satellite images taken on Wednesday showed an extensive fire burning in the immediate vicinity of the nuclear complex.

President Zelensky blamed the damage on Russian shelling, and in his nightly address accused Moscow of putting Ukraine and Europe “one step away” from disaster.

But local Russian-appointed governor Yevgeny Balitsky blamed the Ukrainian military for the strikes, accusing them of causing power outages to the region as a result.

The BBC was not able to independently verify which side was responsible. Russia’s military took over the plant in early March, but it is still being operated by Ukrainian staff under difficult conditions.

    Image shows fire
    1px transparent line

Radiation levels nearby remained normal despite the Zaporizhzhia nuclear complex losing its main power supply on Thursday, local officials reported.

The UN’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said the plant “remained connected to a 330kV line from the nearby thermal power facility that can provide back-up electricity if needed”, citing Ukraine’s state nuclear agency.

It added that all six nuclear reactor units remained disconnected from the power grid despite supplies having been restored later on Thursday.

Normally the nuclear plant supplies one-fifth of Ukraine’s total electricity – so its continued disconnection from the national grid would pose serious challenges for Ukraine.

The Kremlin has signalled it will allow international inspectors to visit the complex – but until that happens it is difficult to verify what is happening on the ground.

“Almost every day there is a new incident at or near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. We can’t afford to lose any more time,” IAEA director general Rafael Grossi said in a statement, repeating his call to lead an international mission to the plant in the next few days.

Energy experts worry that some of the site’s safety mechanisms could fail if the complex loses all power.

It comes amid claims from Kyiv that Moscow could be trying to intentionally divert power from the occupied nuclear plant to reconnect it to Russia’s own power grid.

There were reports on Thursday of power outages across towns and villages in neighbouring parts of Russian-occupied Ukraine.

The mayor of Enerhodar, which is located next to the nuclear plant, claimed on Thursday that the city had no power or water at all and there were also reports of power cuts in the Russian-occupied cities of Melitopol and Kherson.

Washington officials condemned any bid by Moscow to redirect the power generated by the Zaporizhzhia plant away from Kyiv’s national grid.

“The electricity that it produces rightly belongs to Ukraine,” US state department spokesperson Vedant Patel said on Thursday evening, adding that “no country should turn a nuclear power plant into an active war zone.”

  • Benzema wins 2021-22 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award

Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema outshined Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois to be crowned 2021-22 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year.

The forward was bestowed the title following the Champions League group-stage draw in Istanbul on Thursday

Benzema is the top scorer in the Champions League with 15 goals. In LaLiga last term, he aided Madrid to a famous double, netting 29 goals.

He has featured in 46 games in both the Champions League and LaLiga last term.

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti also was celebrated at the ceremony, beating Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp to be awarded the UEFA Men’s Coach of the Year Award.

But the headline prize was that handed out to Benzema, who will now be targeting the most notable individual prize in football.

The 34-year-old was named among the 30 Ballon d’Or nominees earlier this month, with the long-time Madrid star seemingly the outstanding favourite.

Benzema scored 27 goals in 32 games as Madrid won LaLiga, and he also netted 15 in 12 Champions League outings en route to Los Blancos lifting their 14th European crown in Paris in May.

This year’s Ballon d’Or winner is due to be confirmed on October 17, with the mid-season World Cup resulting in an early announcement.

  • Newcastle United to sign Alexander Isak from Sociedad in £60m deal

Newcastle United are in the pipeline of signing Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad.

The two clubs are looking at fee of about £60m.

Isak’s signing would double Newcastle’s spending this summer to just short of £120m after already signing Matt Targett, Sven Botman and Nick Pope, and bring the total to around £200m since the new owners took over the club in October 2021.

The Sweden international, 22, would boost the Magpies’ attacking options given the injury record of Callum Wilson, who is awaiting results of a hamstring scan.

Ex-Borussia Dortmund player Isak has 44 goals in 132 appearances for Sociedad, and nine in 37 for his country.

Newcastle’s transfer record is the £40m they paid for Joelinton in 2019.

The Brazilian striker-turned-midfielder was signed from German club Hoffenheim.

The club also paid £35m plus add-ons for fellow Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes last January but Isak’s signing would be a significant shift from Newcastle’s new owners, who took over the club in October and have taken a considered approach to the transfer market.

  • Dele Alli welcomed by large crowd at Besiktas

Dele Alli on Wednesday flew to Istanbul as he leaves Everton to join Besiktas on a season-long loan.

He arrived with his agents in order to complete his move to Besitkas today, Thursday, August 25.

The 26-year-old midfielder was received by a large crowd of Turkish fans at the airport.

Alli’s is scheduled to have his medical in the next hours today.

Alli is poised to join Besiktas on loan until the end of the 2022/23 season, although the Turkish side will also have the option to make the move permanent for around £6million.

The 26-year-old midfielder only joined Everton from Tottenham in January, but has failed to make an impact on Merseyside in just 13 appearances.

  • Umtiti loan to Serie A minnows Lecce confirmed

Samuel Umtiti will be joining Serie A side Lecce on a season-long loan, Barcelona have confirmed.

Barcelona announced his departure from the club with no option to buy on their Twitter platform.

Umtiti becomes the latest player to be offloaded by the club as they seek to get their squad in order following a high-spending transfer window, despite well-documented financial difficulties.

He penned a new extension with Barca earlier this year, albeit on reduced wages, but will now spend the 2022-23 campaign in Italy with newly promoted Lecce,

Umtiti joined Barca from Lyon in 2016 and has made 133 appearances across all competitions for the club, winning two league titles and the Copa del Rey on three occasions.

In addition, he was a key member of the France squad that claimed World Cup glory at Russia 2018, though the centre-back has not played for his country since 2019 and is expected to miss out on selection for this year’s tournament in Qatar.

Meanwhile, Robert Lewandowski, Franck Kessie, Raphinha, Andreas Christensen and Jules Kounde have joined Barcelona.

Neto, Oscar Mingueza, Riqui Puig, Luuk de Jong, Adama Traore and Dani Alves among those to leave so far.

Barca are still yet to register former Sevilla defender Kounde, whose future at Camp Nou could well hinge upon whether Xavi’s side are able to offload forwards Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or Memphis Depay before the deadline, while Martin Braithwaite is another player they would like to move on.

  • ‘Bernardo Silva likes Barcelona very much’ – Guardiola admits

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has stated that Bernardo Silva is a fan of Barcelona, thus may want to join before the end of the transfer window.

For Guardiola, Man City would still want to work with Silva as he has proven himself worthy.

According to him, should Silva decide to move, it would pose a huge challenge for City since the transfer window closes in a few days.

He however noted that his goal is to ensure all players with his side are happy, therefore, would not hinder Silva from moving should he decide to.

“We count on him and I do not want him to leave,” Guardiola said. “He is a superlative player in everything [he does]. But as I have always said: I do not want a player to be unhappy. If a good offer came, he wanted to leave and there was an agreement, we would see.

Although, if he left now, it would be a problem, because the market is about to close. With that said, Bernardo likes Barcelona very much,” he added.

Silva remains a key man for Guardiola’s Manchester City, excelling and scoring the equaliser in Sunday’s 3-3 draw at Newcastle United, yet he also continues to be linked to Barca.

The Blaugrana have invested heavily in this window, with Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Jules Kounde among their eye-catching signings.

However, Barca coach Xavi is said to still be eager to add to his squad, with Silva seen as a potentially key capture.

City visited Camp Nou on Wednesday for a friendly another 3-3 draw and both Xavi and Guardiola were predictably asked to discuss Silva after the match.

“Who does not like Bernardo Silva? Just like De Bruyne or Haaland,” Xavi said. “But there is no news.

“He is a player that I love there are few like him but it already depends on City.”

The window will close next Thursday, with City’s incoming business seemingly done after adding Erling Haaland, Stefan Ortega, Kalvin Phillips and Sergio Gomez to Guardiola’s squad, along with Julian Alvarez, who was signed in January.

  • Guardiola believes Haaland signing shows Man City are elite

Manchester City’s manager, Pep Guardiola has made comments suggesting that the signing of major players is because his side is an elite club.

Man City in May signed Erling Haaland, who was also on the wish list of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

An amount of £51.2million (€60m) was spent to get the striker.

Guardiola told BBC’s Football Focus that Man City has been able to create a niche for themselves, hence contributed to the signing of the Norway international.

“Yeah, maybe it’s right. We cannot deny how incredible his numbers and talent are. From what I saw of him so far, he’s a huge competitor in every training session, he’s incredibly focused to do it, there’s no doubt about that,” he said.

“But we had a lot of legends here, whose contribution has been [important] to the way we are right now. Sergio, Vincent Kompany, Pablo Zabaleta, Joe Hart, David Silva, many of these,” Guardiola added.

Man City have lifted the Premier League trophy four times in the six full seasons in England, and according to Guardiola, that can now attract players who would previously have preferred huge European clubs such as Bayern, Madrid or Barcelona.

“You’re right, maybe we could not do it or they choose another club, because the charisma of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid was higher than us. In the highest [level] of Europe, we are new, just one decade, and they have long, long histories.

And maybe you’re right. We know the most followed strikers or players now come here, that is the proof that we have done really well. I remember in pre-season, in the [United] States five years or six years ago, there were few blue shirts in the stands. These last games against Bayern Munich and [Club] America [in July], there was a lot.

“People follow the winners and we won a lot in these last years, and people support us around the world, which is incredible. It’s a big honour,” he said.

Haaland has started brightly, scoring three goals in his first three league games.

The Norway international is just the third player to score on both of his first two away trips in the Premier League for City, after Emmanuel Adebayor and Emile Mpenza, having followed up his opening-game double at West Ham with a goal in a 3-3 draw with Newcastle United on Sunday.

City’s all-time record goalscorer Sergio Aguero, meanwhile, is the only other player to score twice on his Premier League debut for the club, having done so against Swansea City in August 2011.

  • Trapp turns down Man Utd’s offer to stay at Eintracht Frankfurt

Kevin Trapp will not be joining Manchester United as he has turned the club’s offer.

The former Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper has decided to stay at Eintracht Frankfurt.

He announced his decision in an Instagram post on Thursday, August 25, 2022.

“It is true that there is a written offer. Manchester United is a world club and the fact that I can deal with and think about such an offer, I hope everyone understands. Yesterday, however, I informed the person in charge of both clubs that I had chosen Eintracht.”

According to the Germany international, he has experienced “unforgettable things” with Frankfurt and they have made history together.

Trapp noted that although the start of the season has been bumpy, “I have absolute faith in us.”

Eintracht lost 6-1 to Bayern Munich in their opening game of the Bundesliga season before going down 2-0 to Real Madrid in the Super Cup in Helsinki.

Trapp has been one of the best performing goalkeepers in the Bundesliga in recent seasons, and in the 2021-22 campaign topped the charts for the number of goals he prevented, as per Opta’s expected goals on target conceded (xGOT) model.

The former Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper prevented 6.1 goals across 32 matches in total, a better figure than any other shot-stopper in the competition to have played 10 times or more.

In comparison, De Gea’s goals prevented tally across 38 league matches last season was 2.8, which ranked second in the Premier League (of goalkeepers to make 10 or more appearances).

  • I will engage in active football to earn 2022 World Cup call-up – Asamoah Gyan reacts to critics

Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has said he will work extremely hard to earn a spot with the senior national football team ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

In a BBC interview, Gyan revealed his intention to play actively for the Ghana Black Stars. Since his announcement, Gyan has received divided opinions from citizens.

According to his critics, Gyan has been inactive since leaving Legon Cities at the end of the 2020/21 season hence cannot feature at the World Cup.

But according to Gyan while speaking on the Dentaa Show, he will resume active football with any club in the Ghana Premier League to present him acceptable for a call-up.

“Anything can happen, but I want to earn the call-up rather. I want to start playing competitively. It could be anywhere. It could be in the Ghana [Premier] League,” he said.

“I want to see myself in a team playing week in and week out before I can consider going to the World Cup,” he added.

Ghana have been housed in Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay.

Black Starlets‘ former captain, Eric Ayiah, has completed the necessary tests involved with his medicals in order to join Gil Vicente, a Portuguese top flight side.

He underwent medicals on Tuesday, August 23, 2022.

According to JoyNews reports, the 22-year-old will receive a three-year contract to enable him leave AS Monaco.

The striker made headlines in 2017 in leading Ghana to the Africa U17 Cup of Nations in Gabon and the Fifa U17 World Cup in India.

At the U-17 Afcon five years ago, Ayiah netted four times to finish second top scorer at the tournament.

Ayiah scored three goals in five appearances at the World Cup also before being snapped up by the Ligue 1 side.

However, he has failed to establish himself as a first-team player since the move promoting a move away from the club.

Gil Vicente are expected to confirm his capture in the coming days with just one year left on his deal with Monaco.

Ayiah was one time likened to PSG and France striker Kylian Mbappe, who also developed through the Monaco youth system to the senior team before moving to Paris Saint Germain in 2017.

The Ghanaian was also hoping for the same path and was determined to prove his worth.

However, with that dream far from being achieved, a move to Portugal for the 22-year-old is said the deal that will breathe life into his career.

Gil Vicente finished fifth in the Portuguese league last season and have four points from three games in the ongoing 2022/23 season.

  • Emerson Palmieri signs £15m deal with West Ham

Emerson Palmieri will no longer play for Chelsea as he has signed a deal with West Ham.

    The four-year deal with a one-year is worth £13m plus £2m in add-ons.

The left-back has said he “can’t wait to get started in a West Ham shirt.”

“I’m very happy to be here and to arrive here. It’s a big challenge for me, it’s a big team, so I’m very happy to be here and I’m ready. Personally, since the first day I arrived here in England, I always saw the big clubs and I always watched the big games and I knew the history about West Ham. The history is so, so big for this team and so when I knew about the interest for sure I said ‘Yes, let’s go, I want to go there’ and I’m here now,” Palmieri added.

The Italy international spent last season on loan at Lyon and has struggled to become a regular at Stamford Bridge since his 2018 move from Roma.

Emerson Palmieri is West Ham’s seventh signing of the summer.

David Moyes’ side are currently bottom of the Premier League with no points from three matches.

The Hammers’ biggest signings have been striker Gianluca Scamacca from Sassuolo for £30m, defender Nayef Aguerd from Rennes for £30m and forward Maxwel Cornet from Burnley for £17.5m.

They have also signed midfielder Flynn Downes from Swansea for £12m, and defender Thilo Kehrer and goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, each for a reported £10m from Paris St-Germain.

“We are very pleased to welcome Emerson to West Ham United,” said Moyes.

“He is an experienced player with a good pedigree, who has enjoyed great success at both club and international level in recent years.

“He will give us strong competition in defensive areas and brings a winning mentality that we are looking to build here at West Ham.

“We look forward to working with Emerson and wish him all the very best in his career with us.”

  • Chelsea’s Hudson-Odoi to join Bayer Leverkusen on loan

Callum Hudson-Odoi is set to leave Chelsea to join Bayer Leverkusen on loan in the on-going summer transfer window.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano in a Twitter post revealed that the deal between the two clubs will be completed during the week.

“Bayer Leverkusen are closing on Callum Hudson-Odoi deal. Negotiations set to be completed with Chelsea on loan, after CHO turned down two loan proposals from Premier League. Deal progressing well – to be completed this week,” he tweeted.

Premier League sides with Newcastle and Southampton and Borussia Dortmund were interested in the 21-year-old, however, Callum Hudson-Odoi has opted to join Leverkusen.

Hudson-Odoi was keen for more regular football this season and Chelsea have sanctioned his loan exit after ruling out a permanent move.

New Blues co-owner Todd Boehly personally pleaded with Hudson-Odoi to only consider a temporary move away.

Hudson-Odoi made quite the first impression upon his debut season under Maurizio Sarri back in 2019, however he has struggled for game time since his injury. Last season, he had missed out on a large chunk of last season due to injury missing several games for the Blues.

He made 28 appearances for Thomas Tuchel’s side, scored three goals and provided six assists in the process last term.

Hudson-Odoi also enjoyed considerable success at youth level for England, being part of the squad which ended as runners-up in the UEFA European Under-17 Championship and which won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in the same year.

In March 2019, he became the youngest player to debut in a competitive match for England, doing so in UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic.
