Marseille near ÂŁ17m agreement for Tottenham’s Hojbjerg

French club Marseille are in advanced discussions to sign Tottenham and Denmark midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. The 28-year-old is reportedly ready to leave north London and is valued at around ÂŁ17 million.

Negotiations are ongoing regarding the payment terms, but both parties expect the deal to be finalized soon. Hojbjerg joined Tottenham in 2020 from Southampton in a ÂŁ15 million transfer during Jose Mourinho’s tenure.

Last season, Hojbjerg made 39 appearances for Tottenham, though he only started in 10 matches as manager Ange Postecoglou preferred Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr in central midfield. With his contract set to expire in 2025, Hojbjerg will be available on a free transfer if new terms are not agreed upon.

Tottenham have bolstered their midfield this summer by signing Archie Gray from Leeds and Lucas Bergvall from Swedish club Djurgardens.

Marseille, under the leadership of former Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi, have been actively recruiting new talent. They recently signed forward Mason Greenwood from Manchester United and midfielder Ismael Kone from Watford. The club is also reportedly interested in acquiring Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah.

  • Ghana to export petroleum products to Senegal and Gambia

Ghana to export petroleum products to Senegal and Gambia

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has recently secured an agreement with Senegal and Gambia for the importation of petroleum products from Ghana.

This development expands Ghana’s export portfolio, which already includes Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Cote D’Ivoire, and Togo.

In 2023, the volume of petroleum products re-exported and transited to these neighboring countries amounted to an impressive 385,154,100 liters.

Speaking at the Ghana International Petroleum Conference (GhiPCon), themed “The Petroleum Industry: Building a Future for Growth, Efficiency, and Sustainability,” Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid highlighted the increase in export volumes as evidence of NPA’s success in curbing illicit fuel activities in the country.

The Ghanaian petroleum industry has registered over 3,000 service providers, featuring significant local participation.

Annually, the industry delivers over four million metric tonnes of petroleum products domestically and internationally, positioning itself as a key contributor to Ghana’s GDP growth.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid noted, “We estimate that the sector had a monetary value of over GHC 71 billion, representing about 84% of the country’s 2023 GDP. In the past seven years, the industry returned an average annual value of over GHC 35 billion.”

Emphasizing the dynamic nature of the downstream petroleum industry, the NPA is committed to leveraging technology and innovation.

The NPA has implemented various strategies and policies to ensure efficiency, profitability, and value for consumers. One such initiative is the transparent automatic price adjustment formula, which has reformed pricing from an annual regulated price with unpaid subsidies to bi-weekly and daily regulations.

The NPA has also declared zero tolerance for toxic fuel, with Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Morocco now consuming low-sulfur fuels. The typical import contains less than 50 ppm, with a roadmap for local refineries to comply.

To ensure the integrity of the quality and quantity of petroleum products delivered to consumers, the NPA has rolled out several technology-based projects. These include the petroleum marking scheme, bulk road vehicle tracking project, electronic cargo tracking system, and enterprise relational database management software.

During the conference, the Minister of Energy, on behalf of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, praised the NPA for its strategic management of the “Gold for Oil” program and the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM), which have boosted investor confidence in the sector. These efforts, combined with a robust policy framework, have encouraged private sector investment, contributing significantly to Ghana’s policy target of 50% LPG penetration by 2030.

The Minister challenged the NPA to continue investing in infrastructure, leveraging cutting-edge technology, and enhancing supply chain resilience to secure Ghana’s energy future. He emphasized that strategies must be robust, innovative, and adaptable to geopolitical tensions, technological advancements, and environmental concerns.

You snatched the steering wheel and crushed the bus – Anyidoho tells Mahama

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has accused the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, of mismanaging the economy during his presidency from 2012 to 2016.

In a post on the X platform on July 20, Mr. Anyidoho figuratively alleged that Mr. Mahama “snatched” the authority to lead from the late Professor Atta Mills, whom he referred to as the “driver.” Using a metaphor, he likened the Ghanaian economy to a ‘Yutong bus,’ claiming that the former president “killed passengers,” implying harm to citizens, leading to his defeat in the 2016 general elections.

“Your license revoked by the people,” he wrote, suggesting that Mahama was removed from office by the electorate.

Mr. Anyidoho also criticized John Mahama for failing to accept the challenge from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to debate the economy. He argued that such a debate would help enlighten the populace on their respective agendas for the country’s development.

According to Mr. Anyidoho, Mr. Mahama is not prepared or fit to govern the country should he be given a second term. “A mate says he is ready for a driving test with you for the people to determine who is fit to drive the bus – you aren’t ready for a test. No way!”

Ghanaian Prophet Richard Kwame Owusu has claimed that Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar, is being pursued by 15 powerful demons.

He asserts that these 15 evil spirits possess Cheddar and if he ascends to the presidency, he will abolish Christianity in Ghana.

Despite this alarming prediction, the prophet assures that Ghanaians will not face hardship under Cheddar’s rule.

Adding another layer to his prophecy, Prophet Owusu advises Cheddar to consider running as the vice presidential candidate alongside Alan Kyerematen in the upcoming election.

The founder and leader of the New Force is also prophesied by Prophet Owusu to become the President of Ghana within the next eight years.

According to the prophet, Cheddar is destined to become the President of Ghana within the next eight years.

However, the prophecy comes with a controversial twist. Prophet Owusu claims that Cheddar is possessed by 15 powerful demons and, if he ascends to the presidency, he will abolish Christianity in Ghana.

Despite this alarming assertion, the prophet assures that Ghanaians will not face hardship under Cheddar’s leadership.

Adding to the intrigue, Prophet Owusu has advised Cheddar to consider running as the vice-presidential candidate alongside Alan Kyerematen in the upcoming election.

Reactions to the prophecy have been mixed. While some dismiss it as mere speculation, others are taking it seriously, reflecting the deep interest and varied opinions on prophetic statements in Ghanaian society.

  • Gyampo, Kpebu drag A-G, EOCO to court over Cecilia Dapaah case

Gyampo, Kpebu drag A-G, EOCO to court over Cecilia Dapaah case

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu and University of Ghana Professor Ransford Gyampo have jointly sued the Attorney-General (A-G) and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over the handling of the case involving former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

This legal action arises from disagreements with the advice given by the A-G to EOCO, advising against investigating money laundering allegations related to the former minister.

Martin Kpebu announced the suit during an appearance on TV3’s “Key Points” on Saturday, July 20. He expressed their dissatisfaction with the A-G’s advice to EOCO not to pursue an investigation into the matter.

“We have sued, the advice by the A-G, we are challenging the A-G in court. We filed the writ a week ago. There are several cases coming up. We have sued EOCO and A-G. Which law says that you must find a predicate offence?” Kpebu questioned.

Kpebu further elaborated that establishing a predicate offence is not necessary before charging an individual with money laundering.

A predicate offence is an illegal activity that forms the basis for another crime. For instance, in money laundering, tax evasion can be considered a predicate offence as the illicit proceeds from tax evasion would be laundered.

He emphasized that failing to disclose the source of income should be sufficient grounds for a money laundering charge. “If one failed to disclose the source of the income, it was enough to charge the person with money laundering,” Kpebu stated.

The lawsuit challenges the A-G’s advice to EOCO, which stemmed from a request for guidance on the matter.

The Attorney-General’s office, in a letter dated April 25, 2024, and copied to EOCO, noted that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) had not submitted its report on a collaborative investigation to EOCO. Additionally, the OSP had not responded to EOCO’s request for its findings.

According to the Attorney-General’s office, the docket presented to EOCO only contained the OSP’s letter transmitting the docket, the diary of action, statements taken during the investigation, and letters written by the OSP to other institutions such as the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and banks for inquiries.

Kpebu and Gyampo’s lawsuit seeks to challenge the A-G’s directive, arguing that the absence of a predicate offence should not prevent an investigation into potential money laundering activities.

This case is expected to bring further scrutiny to the processes and decisions made by both the Attorney-General’s office and EOCO regarding high-profile investigations.

  • Biden endorses Kamala Harris as he withdraws from presidential race

Biden endorses Kamala Harris as he withdraws from presidential race

President Joe Biden has announced his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor.

This significant announcement comes just four months before Americans head to the polls, dramatically reshaping the landscape of the upcoming election.

The decision follows weeks of mounting pressure from fellow Democrats, particularly after Biden’s lackluster performance in a debate against Republican contender Donald Trump at the end of June.

Critics highlighted Biden’s occasional incoherence and weakened voice during the debate, which his party attributed to a cold.

In a heartfelt letter posted on his social media account Sunday evening, Biden expressed his honor in serving as president and explained his decision to step aside. “And while it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling the duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote.

He took the opportunity to thank Kamala Harris, calling her an “extraordinary partner,” and extended his gratitude to the American people for their faith and trust in him. “I believe today and always have: that there is nothing America can’t do – when we do it together. We just have to remember we are the United States of America,” he emphasized.

The president, who was diagnosed with Covid last week and has been recuperating at his home in Delaware, had indicated on Friday that he was eager to return to the campaign trail. However, this latest development marks a significant shift in his plans. Biden, who had previously stated that only the “Lord Almighty” could make him withdraw from the race, acknowledged that he would consider stepping down if faced with a health condition.

Biden’s statement concluded with an announcement that he would address the nation on this matter next week, signaling a new chapter in the 2024 presidential race. This endorsement of Kamala Harris positions her as a prominent contender and brings a renewed focus to her campaign as the Democratic Party prepares for the upcoming election.

I took no commissions from influencers I helped generate GHC6000 from 1xBET – Bongo Ideas

Social media personality Albert Nat Hyde, known as Bongo Ideas, has revealed that he did not take any commissions from influencers he helped generate substantial income from promotions with 1XBET.

Despite his significant role in their success, Bongo Ideas emphasized his selfless approach in supporting other influencers.

In a recent post dated July 19, 2024, Bongo Ideas detailed his contributions to the influencer community and the personal and professional challenges he currently faces:

“At the time of my kidnapping, I was making approximately $3,000 every three months from 1XBET, and the two-year contract [2022-2024] we had was almost going to be extended. After my items were illegally confiscated by my abductors, and my Twitter logins forcibly changed, I have lost all that and more.”

He highlighted the substantial earnings he facilitated for other influencers:

“I gave similar opportunities to several influencers on Twitter, Facebook, IG, and Snapchat. At the time, each influencer I put on was making at least GHC 6,000 from 1XBET for promoting the brand. I took no commissions!”

Bongo Ideas expressed his commitment to supporting fellow influencers without seeking personal financial gain:

“I was working with brands, had ongoing contracts with deadlines to meet, and several thousands of cedis to be collected, which never came to me. Today, I am at loose ends. My Gmail, iCloud, iPhone, MacBook, and other vital documents remain under lock and key by people I do not know—supposedly state-sponsored machinery!”

He shared his frustration over the loss of income and opportunities:

“In a country where there are no opportunities for the youths, not only has my source of income been curtailed, but also my safety and security have been jeopardized. My voice, which was the voice of several thousands of teeming yet disgruntled Ghanaians, has been radically silenced.”

Bongo Ideas lamented the broader implications for freedom of speech in Ghana:

“In the face of bad leadership which has left many citizens impoverished, we can’t speak! Ghana, which touts itself as the epicentre of democracy on the continent, now has the majority of its citizens cowered into perpetual muteness. We are neither citizens nor spectators; we are just not involved!”

Referencing prominent critics of the Ghanaian government, he remarked: “Kevin Taylor and Twene Jonas cannot dare visit Ghana; other harsh critics of the system are targeted, vilified, and their characters assassinated [literally & figuratively]. Whether I was the architect of my own downfall or not, this is not the Ghana you and I want to continue to live in. As Napoleon Bonaparte said, ‘The world suffers a lot. Not because of the violence of the bad people. But because of the silence of the good people.’”

The alleged arrest of Albert Nat Hyde, also known as Bongo Ideas, reportedly occurred in two phases earlier this year. Reports first emerged in March, indicating his detention by security agencies.

Barker-Vormawor, convener of Fix The Country, suggested that the arrest was linked to information Bongo Ideas had released regarding President Akufo-Addo and First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo. Despite searches by his family in various police stations across Accra, they were unable to locate him.

Subsequent reports indicated that Bongo Ideas had returned home, only to be arrested again on March 16.

Barker-Vormawor outlined the circumstances of this second apprehension, stating that over ten individuals in two vehicles and motorbikes, claiming to be sent by the IGP, came to pick up Bongo Ideas.

Acute water shortage hits residents in Tema East District

Several communities in the Tema East district, including Saki-Bediako, Michel Camp, Golf City, and surrounding areas, are grappling with a severe water shortage.

Residents have been without running water for the past three days, causing significant disruptions to their daily lives.

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has come under fire from the affected residents who are calling for immediate action and clear communication regarding the prolonged water supply disruption. The frustration among residents is palpable as they face mounting difficulties due to the lack of access to essential water services.

Sampson Ampah, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the GWCL in the Tema Region, acknowledged the gravity of the situation.

He revealed that the issue is not localized but affects a broad area. “I am talking about a very large catchment area. I am talking about Saki-Bediako, Golf City down to Kpone, parts of Tema, and Community 25. For the past four days, no water has been flowing through the lines. Michel Camp, even the military, no water is flowing. It’s very terrible,” Ampah said.

Residents are frustrated by the lack of information or prior notice regarding the water disruption. They have expressed their concern over the absence of communication from GWCL about the underlying issues or any plans for resolving the situation.

“We haven’t heard any information whether there is any challenge with their water lines. No information. No prior notice for us to even find ways of storing water. Nothing. And it’s terrible. You can imagine living in a home without water. It’s just so terrible,” Ampah added.

Yagbonwura bans Samuel Jinapor from stepping foot in palaces in Gonja land

The Overload of the Gonja Traditional Authority, His Royal Majesty Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewusoale I, is reported to have banned the Lands and Natural Resource Minister and Member of Parliament for the Damango Constituency, Samuel Abu Jinapor, from all palaces in the area over insubordination.

The chiefs and people of Damongo in the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region issued a stern warning to Samuel Abu Jinapor, to stay away from interfering in traditional matters in the area.

According to them, the continuous interference of the MP in matters that should be handled within traditional frameworks has the tendencies of causing widespread discontent and disaffection among the people.

Addressing a press conference in Damongo, Saa Wura -Abukari Jaga on behalf of the Damongowura Kelly Braimah Boresa Seidu said, the MP is the only stakeholder who has refused to recognize and acknowledge Damongowura Kelly as the substantive Damongowura as affirmed by the Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Soale Jewu.

Samuel Jinapor has refuted claims of his involvement in Gonja chieftaincy matters.

In a press release issued on July 18, Mr Jinapor addressed recent media publications suggesting his interference in chieftaincy issues in Damongo and the wider Gonja area.

Mr Jinapor emphasized that these allegations are entirely false. He reiterated his respect for the chieftaincy institution, particularly acknowledging the authority of the Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Bi-Kunuto Jewu Soale, and other chiefs.

But in a recent video circulating on social media, the Yagbonwura’s linguist is heard warning all chiefs under the custody of the Yagbonwura not to accept the Minister and MP into their palaces.

Kudus’ relatives to represent him as his agents

Black Stars attacking midfielder, Mohammed Kudus, will now have his relatives serve as his agents after parting ways with Jennifer Mendelewitsch, as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

This change comes after the 23-year-old West Ham United star’s notable transfer from Ajax to the Premier League, a deal facilitated by Mendelewitsch last summer.

In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Romano shared, “Mohammed Kudus will now be represented by relatives and legal team after decision to part ways with his former agents.”

This development marks a significant shift in Kudus’ professional representation as he prepares for the next chapter of his career.

Kudus, a product of the Right to Dream Academy, has made an impressive impact in his first season with West Ham United, drawing interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad. His standout performances have not gone unnoticed, and speculation about his future continues to grow.

Currently, Kudus is in preseason training with West Ham United, demonstrating his skills in recent friendlies. He played in a 2-2 draw against Hungary’s Ferencvaros and contributed to a 1-0 victory over Dagenham and Redbridge, showcasing his readiness for the upcoming season.

Severe financial crisis will hit Ghana early 2025 -Economist projects

Ghana is on the brink of a severe financial crisis expected to hit early in 2025, according to a projection by financial analyst, economist, and historian Scott Bolshevik.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) dated July 12, 2024, Bolshevik warned Ghanaians to prepare for significant economic turbulence, citing the government’s current inability to service foreign debt and the impending depreciation of the cedi.

Bolshevik highlighted that the government is employing short-term measures to mask deeper economic issues, particularly in the context of the upcoming elections.

These measures, he noted, are not addressing the underlying problems, thereby setting the stage for a more profound financial crisis in the near future.

Depreciation of the Cedi: Bolshevik projected a significant depreciation of the cedi in 2025. The value of the cedi has been under pressure due to various factors, including high inflation rates, trade imbalances, and reduced foreign exchange reserves. A depreciating cedi can lead to higher import costs, which can drive up the prices of goods and services, further burdening the already struggling populace.

Foreign Debt Servicing: The Ghanaian government has ceased servicing its foreign debt, a critical indicator of financial distress. The suspension of debt servicing can lead to a loss of investor confidence, making it more challenging for the country to secure future loans or investments. This could exacerbate the country’s fiscal deficit and limit its ability to fund essential services and infrastructure projects.

I first heard of the “Siren L.I.” on Facebook – Okudzeto

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed that he first encountered the controversial Legislative Instrument (LI) allowing the use of sirens and exempting certain officials from speed limits on Facebook, rather than through official parliamentary channels.

His revelation has sparked calls for an urgent review of the procedures governing the laying of LIs in Parliament.

The proposed LI, which sought to amend the Road Traffic Regulations 2012 to permit Members of Parliament, Ministers, and judges to use sirens and drive without speed limits, was withdrawn on Tuesday following widespread public outcry.

Mr Ablakwa’s discovery of the LI on social media underscores significant concerns about the transparency and accessibility of the legislative process.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsfile, Mr Ablakwa expressed his frustration with the current system, noting that many MPs, including himself, did not have access to the document when it was initially laid before Parliament in June 2024.

“I first heard of the ‘Siren L.I.’ on Facebook,” he stated, highlighting a critical lapse in the dissemination of essential legislative information. Despite his active role as a Member of Parliament, Ablakwa was surprised to learn about the LI through social media rather than through official channels.

“We have to admit that this matter has not covered Parliament in glory. There are so many pieces to this puzzle that Parliament itself must review. That is why I put out a statement saying that we need to conduct an investigation into this matter and the way LIs are laid,” Ablakwa said.

He criticized the current system, where only members of the Subsidiary Legislation Committee have early access to LIs, leaving other MPs without copies until the 21-day review period is over.

“It is wrong, we have turned the whole procedure upside down. So that portion of our constitution and our Standing Orders needs urgent review,” he emphasized.

I am at loose ends; state-sponsored machinery have locked my iCloud, MacBook – Bongo Ideas

Social media personality Albert Nat Hyde, widely known as Bongo Ideas, has expressed a profound sense of disorientation and purposelessness following his recent alleged abduction by individuals he believes to be officers of the Ghana Police Service.

In a recent post dated July 19, 2024, Bongo Ideas raised serious concerns about his safety and the security of his personal information. He detailed the impact of the incident on his life, stating:

“At the time of my kidnapping, I was making approximately $3000 every three months from 1XBET, and the two-year contract [2022-2024] we had was almost going to be extended. After my items were illegally confiscated by my abductors, and my Twitter @BongoIdeas logins forcibly changed, I have lost all that and more.”

Bongo Ideas further elaborated on his financial losses, explaining how he had provided similar opportunities to several influencers on various social media platforms, helping them earn significant amounts without taking any commissions himself.

Bongo Ideas lamented the broader implications of his situation, highlighting the lack of opportunities for youth in Ghana and the risks to his safety and security.

He voiced his frustration with the current state of the country, describing how his outspoken nature had been stifled:

“My voice, which was the voice of several thousands of teeming yet disgruntled Ghanaians, has been radically silenced. In the face of bad leadership which has left many citizens impoverished, we can’t speak! Ghana, which touts itself as the epicenter of democracy on the continent, now has the majority of its citizens cowered into perpetual muteness. We are neither citizens nor spectators; we are just not involved!”

He drew comparisons to other outspoken critics of the government, such as Kevin Taylor and Twene Jonas, who he claimed are unable to visit Ghana due to fear of retribution. Bongo Ideas expressed his disillusionment with the state of affairs in the country, questioning whether this was the Ghana they wanted to live in.

“As Napoleon Bonaparte said, ‘The world suffers a lot. Not because of the violence of the bad people. But because of the silence of the good people.’”

    Background

The details of Albert Nat Hyde’s alleged arrest, known as Bongo Ideas, which is said to have happened in two incidents, emerged in March this year.

Reports indicate that Bongo Ideas was detained by security agencies. Oliver Barker-Vormawor, convener of Fix The Country, suggested that his arrest was linked to recent information released by Bongo Ideas regarding President Akufo-Addo and First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo.

Barker-Vormawor claimed that Bongo Ideas’ family searched various police stations in Accra but could not locate him. Subsequent reports indicated that Bongo Ideas had returned home.

On March 16, Barker-Vormawor disclosed that Bongo Ideas had been arrested for the second time.

In a Facebook post, he outlined the alleged circumstances of the police’s apprehension of the controversial socialite, stating that over 10 individuals in two vehicles and motorbikes, who claimed to have been sent by the IGP, came to pick up Bongo Ideas.

Kwaku Annan alleges NPP plot to organize fake coup to delay 2024 elections

Justice Kwaku Annan, the former host of “The Seat Show” on Net2 TV and now with CTV, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of employing tactics to prevent the 2024 elections from taking place on December 7, as announced by the Electoral Commission (EC).

According to him, the ruling party is planning on orchestrating a fake government takeover by the military to disrupt the political sanity of the country.

“Any form of fake subversion that some people are trying to orchestrate just to affect the electoral process or prevent the election from happening – I want to draw your attention to it so when it happens, you are aware. I hope and pray that they don’t even venture there.

“Any fake military coup to topple this government so you use the backdoor to start the whole process, stop it.,” he said.

He claims this information is not privy to him alone but other journalists, whose identities he kept anonymous.

Research and data firm, Fitch Solutions, predicts that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will emerge victorious over the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming December 7 general elections.

The London-based firm has consistently projected this outcome since last year, citing a recent survey where 54 percent of respondents favored the NDC’s candidate, John Mahama, to win the presidential election.

Mike Kruiniger, Associate Director of Country Risk at Fitch Solutions, spoke during the Mid-Year Review for Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasizing that current economic conditions will heavily influence voter decisions on December 7.

He highlighted economic management and job creation as pivotal issues for voters, potentially putting the NPP at a disadvantage due to the economic challenges the country has experienced in recent years.

“We believe that the opposition NDC has a stronger chance of winning the upcoming general elections compared to the ruling NPP. Recent polls consistently place the NDC ahead with the most recent survey showing 54 % of respondents favouring the NDC.

“In addition, multiple surveys have shown that economic management and job creation are going to be the most important issues during the election for voters which we believe will put the ruling NPP at a disadvantage given the economic challenges that the country has faced over the last couple of years.”

Furthermore, Kruiniger clarified that a potential NDC government under Mahama is expected to maintain the policy trajectory set by the current administration.

“In terms of what a government change will mean for the economy, we think that policy direction under a likely NDC government will not largely change.

“The NDC will most likely stick to Ghana’s IMF programme particularly as the party has shown commitment in the past to international agreements and obligations. So in summary, we expect policy continuation in Ghana despite a likely government change,” he stressed.

Gov’t lands were sold under Kufuor, Mills, Mahama administrations; I have prove – Samuel Jinapor

Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Samuel Abu Jinapor claims to have evidence to prove that the sale of government lands occurred under previous administrations, including those of Presidents Kufuor, Mills, and Mahama.

Mr Jinapor made this revelation while addressing concerns over recent land transactions and the current administration’s handling of the issue.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on July 20, 2024, Jinapor emphasized that the problem of state land sales is not unique to the Akufo-Addo government.

He stated, “I have a litany of land sales in Cantonments, Ridge, Roman Ridge, Airport, and Labone, which were sold under President Mahama’s administration, as well as under Presidents Kufuor, Mills, and Rawlings.”

He argued that focusing on which administration sold what land only serves to distract from addressing the systemic issues that have plagued successive governments.

Mr Jinapor criticized the practice of politicizing the sale of state lands, stressing that such debates do not contribute to finding effective solutions.

“We lose the benefit of the discussion if we situate it in a narrow, self-serving political context,” he said. “If we get into a cycle of finger-pointing, we’ll lose the essence of this discussion.”

His comments are a response to ongoing criticisms, particularly from North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who has accused the current administration of engaging in state capture through land sales.

Mr Jinapor refuted these claims, highlighting that the Akufo-Addo government is actively working to resolve the issue rather than exacerbate it.

Man City was too challenging for Messi – Guardiola

In Marti Perarnau’s biography God Save Pep, it is revealed that Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, played a pivotal role in preventing Lionel Messi from joining the club.

According to the book, Messi, who was eager to reunite with his former coach, reached out to Guardiola in 2020 to explore the possibility of a transfer to Manchester City.

During a meeting at his home in Barcelona, Guardiola reportedly advised Messi that a move to Manchester City could be too demanding for him, given that he was 33 years old at the time.

Despite Messi’s enthusiasm and disagreement with this assessment, Manchester City ultimately did not pursue the transfer. Instead, Messi made a high-profile move to Paris Saint-Germain, which was completed later that year.

As of now, Messi is playing for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS), marking a new chapter in his storied career.

Standing Orders on laying of LIs needs urgent review – Ablakwa

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has called for an urgent overhaul of the procedures governing the laying of Legislative Instruments (LIs) in Parliament.

His demand for reform comes in light of recent controversies surrounding the handling of a Legislative Instrument that sought to amend the Road Traffic Regulations 2012.

The proposed LI, which aimed to permit Members of Parliament, Ministers, and judges to use sirens and drive without speed limits, was withdrawn on Tuesday following widespread public outcry. Ablakwa’s call for reform underscores concerns about the transparency and accessibility of legislative processes.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsfile, Ablakwa revealed that he first encountered the controversial LI not through official parliamentary channels but on Facebook, despite his active role as a Member of Parliament.

He pointed out that many MPs, including himself, did not have access to the document when it was initially laid before Parliament in June 2024.

Ibrahim Mahama gifts Liberia Airport 20 police vehicles, 3 1200KVA generators

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Engineers & Planners Ltd, Ibrahim Mahama, has made a significant donation to the Liberia Airport Authority, including 20 police vehicles and three 1,200 KVA power generators.

The donation was officially presented in Monrovia, with Liberia’s President Joseph Boakai and Vice President Jeremiah Koung in attendance.

During the presentation, Mr. Mahama expressed his deep connection with Liberia and reiterated his commitment to the country’s development.

“When I came here recently, I noticed that the Airport needed help. I didn’t waver, and through the assistance of the Vice President, who constantly reminded me about the need for these generators and cars, I ensured that the donation was fulfilled,” Mahama said.

He further emphasized his strong ties to Liberia, stating, “I didn’t know the items would arrive so quickly, but I was reminded to act. Liberia feels like home to me; whenever I leave Ghana, my next destination is Liberia. I don’t see myself differently from a Liberian, and I grew up with Liberians all my life. It’s all family here.”

Mahama highlighted the dual impact of his donation, noting that it supports both the airport’s infrastructure and the Liberian police service.

“Today, we’ve come to use one stone to kill two birds. We’ve supported the IGP and the police service with these vehicles. This donation is a small token of appreciation, and we hope to return and continue our work with you,” he added.

In response, President Boakai thanked Mr. Mahama for his generosity and assured him that the donated items would be put to effective use in Liberia’s development efforts.

  • If Bawumia will win the elections, let him do it fairly – Kofi Bentil to NPP

If Bawumia will win the elections, let him do it fairly – Kofi Bentil to NPP

Senior Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has called on the government to avoid actions that might suggest bias towards the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.

Kofi Bentil, while expressing his support for Dr. Bawumia, emphasized that any victory should be achieved through legitimate means.

“I support Dr. Bawumia, but if he is to win this election, it must be fair and square,” Bentil stated.

His remarks come in the wake of President Akufo-Addo’s appointment of Commissioner of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Deputy Inspector-General of Police (IGP) in charge of Operations.

The appointment has sparked debate, with some Ghanaians questioning whether it is an attempt to undermine IGP Dr. George Dampare.

Concerns have been raised about the possibility of this move being a strategy to “clip the wings” of Dr. Dampare or even remove him from his position.

During an appearance on Joy FM’s Newsfile, Mr Bentil criticized the President’s decision, arguing that appointing a deputy IGP with specific responsibilities might reinforce allegations of a plot to oust Dr. Dampare.

He highlighted that the NPP had previously demonstrated its commitment to Dr. Dampare’s tenure by voting with the minority in Parliament to accept the Commission’s report, indicating no problem with the IGP.

Despite this, Bentil expressed concern over recent actions by some government operatives that seem to contradict this stance.

“Now you clearly have a situation where operatives within this same government have gone to do something which is clearly not permitted within the law, so it brings back that situation,” he noted.

Bentil warned that such actions could negatively impact public perception and undermine trust in the electoral process. He advised that meaningful dialogue and transparent practices are essential for changing minds and ensuring a fair election outcome.

“Dr. Bawumia is campaigning, so those operatives who think that undermining the process is a way to win the election are wrong and should stop it!” he asserted.

  • My signature was forged – National Paralympic Committee President on Norway marathon saga

My signature was forged – National Paralympic Committee President on Norway marathon saga

President of the National Paralympic Committee – Ghana, Samson Deen, has firmly denied allegations that he authorized a group of Ghanaian para-athletes to travel to Norway for this year’s Bergen Marathon.

His comments come amid controversy surrounding the alleged participation of an 11-member team representing Ghana at the marathon held in Oslo, Norway.

In a recent statement, Deen addressed the confusion and allegations related to the death of an alleged member of the team.

A letter from the Ministry of National Security, dated July 3, 2024, and addressed to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, noted that a para-athlete named Nana Antwi had been apprehended by Norwegian security officials.

Deen categorically refuted the claims, asserting that he had not signed any documents related to the team’s travel or visa application.

He emphasized that his signature was forged in the visa application letter used by the purported Ghanaian representatives.

“We want to make things clear that the Ghana Paralympic Team has not applied for a visa, never has anybody, never has the NPC-Ghana, never have I signed any letter for and on behalf of the Ghana Paralympic Team, and never have we or any of our assigns or officers of the Ghana Paralympic Team or the NPC-Ghana have applied for a visa at the Norwegian Embassy. What you have seen in the media is a forged letter,” Deen stated.

Deen also appealed to the public to disregard the images and stories circulating about the situation.

“I want to appeal to the people of Ghana that the pictures, the stories that are going viral have nothing to do with any member or anyone they see in the picture. None of them are involved, or have or are associated with these people. The letters that were sent with my signature on them were forged,” he added.

The clarification from Deen aims to address the confusion and misinformation surrounding the alleged involvement of Ghanaian para-athletes in the Bergen Marathon and to reaffirm the integrity of the National Paralympic Committee – Ghana.

2 pick-ups donated to NDC to aid Amenfi Central campaign

Joana Gyan, the campaign chairperson for NDC flagbearer John Mahama in the Amenfi Central constituency, has assisted party’s campaign efforts by donating two Toyota Hilux pick-up vehicles.

The donation was officially received by Regional Chairman Nana Toku on behalf of the constituency at the Sekondi NDC Regional Head Office on July 17.

Expressing her hopes for the donation, Joana Gyan emphasized its potential to enhance the party’s mobility and operational efficiency as it prepares for the December 7 general elections.

During the handing-over ceremony, she reaffirmed her dedication to the NDC and underscored the importance of retaining the Amenfi Central seat.

Highlighting the economic challenges facing Ghanaians, Gyan stressed the need for a change in leadership.

“I am ever ready and committed to working with you all to ensure that we deliver an NDC victory in the Western Region and retain the Amenfi Central seat so we can continue the good works,” she stated.

Gyan also pointed out the urgency of addressing the country’s economic woes, adding, “Ghanaians are suffering under the current leadership, and only a John Mahama presidency can save us. Please use these cars to reach every corner and spread the message of hope from the good policies of our flagbearer, John Mahama.”

In response, Regional Chairman Nana Toku, accompanied by constituency executives, expressed gratitude for Joana Gyan’s substantial donation.

He assured her that the vehicles would be effectively utilized to amplify the party’s campaign activities and pledged to manage them prudently to ensure their longevity and optimal performance.

“In my political career, I have never witnessed an individual donating two pick-up trucks to a single constituency. This is truly humbling, and we are deeply grateful to you, Joana Gyan,” he stated.

We’ve not sent any athlete to compete in Oslo marathon – Ghana Paralympic C’ttee

The Ghana Paralympic Committee has responded to reports about a paracycling team representing Ghana which is said to have absconded to various Schengen states after arriving in Norway earlier this year, ostensibly to prepare for the Fjordkraft Bergen City Marathon.

The 11-member team failed to register and participate in the competition, which was scheduled for late April.

According to a document released by the National Security Authority on July 3, 2024, a member of the team was apprehended and detained by Norwegian security officials in late April while attempting to travel to Sweden. The same document revealed that the team coach, George Gyamfi Gyasi, collapsed and was admitted to the Oslo University Hospital, where he subsequently died on May 17, 2024.

But according to president of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC), Samson Deen, the Committee has never sought to participate in any event which is a paralympic qualifier in Norway or Oslo.

“The Ghana Paralympic team have not sent anybody, any athlete. We have never applied for a visa at the Norwegian Embassy or sent anybody to get a visa to travel to Norway,” Mr Deen said in an interview with JoySports.

Ghana Paralympic Committee also noted that the documents being cited which had Mr Deen’s signature were forged, adding that the individuals are not athletes the Committee are familiar with.

In response to these events, the Norwegian embassy in Accra has issued alerts to other Schengen and West African diplomatic missions to aid in apprehending and repatriating the team members. The search for the absconded athletes is currently ongoing.

Meanwhile, the National Paralympic Committee of Ghana has suspended Mr. Theodore Mawuli Viwotor, Mr. Ernest Yaw Ayisi, and the Enestay Foundation indefinitely for their involvement in the matter.

Those missing in Norway aren’t members of Ghana’s Paralympic team – Saddick Adams

Award-winning sports journalist Saddick Adams has uncovered startling details about the so-called Ghanaian paracycling team that has absconded in Norway.

According to Adams, the group is not the official paralympic team but a band of impersonators who managed to travel to Norway with the apparent intention of absconding.

In a social media post, Adams revealed, “First of all, the team in Norway is a FAKE Ghana Para Team. The names being mentioned as leaders are past executives of the committee.”

He further disclosed that there are approximately five separate fake teams masquerading as the official Ghana Para Team, despite lacking government recognition.

Adams shared his insights, drawing from his experience as a member of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the first Africa Para Games in Accra.

He noted, “Having worked as a member of LOC for the first Africa Para Games in Accra, I got an insight into the stark divisions and under dealings by especially some former executives of the Paralympic Committee.”

He highlighted the recurring issue of counterfeit teams exploiting travel opportunities meant for genuine para athletes.

Recalling a specific incident, Adams said, “When the original Ghana Amputee Team Football was preparing for the just ended Amputee AFCON in Egypt, there was also another team training for that same tournament. It had to take a court order to stop the fake team from emplaning to Egypt ahead of the official team.”

Adams emphasized this point, adding, “At the moment, athletes of the official Ghana Paralympic Team who have qualified for the upcoming Paralympic Games in Paris are already in France for their pre-competition camping.”

  • Leave or I leave – K.T. Hammond tells cement manufacturers at a round table meeting

Leave or I leave – K.T. Hammond tells cement manufacturers at a round table meeting

Trade and Industry Minister Kobina Tahir Hammond dismissed representatives of the Cement Manufacturers Association from a scheduled meeting with the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry (GCCI) at the Christ the King in Accra last Friday.

This unexpected move has ignited discussions about the evolving dynamics between the Ministry, the Cement Manufacturers Association, and the Chamber of Construction.

Captured in a video from the event, Minister Hammond is seen firmly requesting the cement manufacturers to vacate the room before the meeting could proceed.

“I was invited by the Chamber of Construction. I wasn’t invited by the Association of Cement Manufacturers. I wasn’t invited by them. Can they leave?” he asserted.

Minister Hammond justified his decision by stating that he had already conducted discussions with the cement manufacturers, and therefore, further dialogue at this meeting was unnecessary. He emphasized that his engagement was exclusively with the Chamber of Construction.

Faced with the presence of the cement manufacturers, Hammond offered a stark ultimatum: “Two options, that I leave or they leave,” rebuffing attempts by Chamber representatives to validate the manufacturers’ attendance.

Chairman of the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industries, Emmanuel Tettey Martey, responded to the Minister’s ultimatum by requesting the cement manufacturers to exit.

“Respectfully, our manufacturers, our minister has stated clearly that he has already met you and you have articulated your issues to him so he thought that he was meeting only the chamber. So that is where we stand. We don’t want a situation where the minister will leave, then we wouldn’t have achieved the purpose for which the meeting was called,” Martey explained.

Despite additional intervention from Nana Opare Kwafo, Vice Chairman of the Ghana Chamber of Construction and Kyidomhene of Aburi, Minister Hammond remained resolute, insisting on the manufacturers’ departure.

A source at the meeting confirmed to CitiNewsroom that the cement manufacturers eventually left, allowing the meeting to continue as planned.

This incident follows a previous altercation on July 1, 2024, when the Cement Manufacturers opted out of a meeting with Minister Hammond due to his insistence on having the media present during the discussions.

The Trade Minister’s unwavering stance and the subsequent ejection of the manufacturers have sparked widespread debate about the necessity for clear communication and coordination in addressing industry concerns.

Central to these disagreements is the Minister’s proposed Legislative Instrument aimed at regulating cement pricing, a measure that has met with significant opposition from the manufacturers.

  • Fifa contacted by Korea FA over alleged racist abuse of Hwang

Fifa contacted by Korea FA over alleged racist abuse of Hwang

The Korean Football Association (KFA) has formally expressed “serious concerns” to FIFA following an incident in which Wolves’ forward Hwang Hee-chan was allegedly subjected to a racist remark by a Como player during a pre-season friendly.

The incident occurred during Monday’s friendly match in Marbella, Spain. Hwang reported the alleged remark, which Como acknowledged involved a reference to Hwang’s name.

While the Italian club dismissed the comment as non-racist and claimed the reaction from Wolves players exaggerated the situation, Wolves and Hwang firmly maintain that the remark was indeed racist.

Wolves are collaborating with the English Football Association to formalize their complaint, which will be submitted to both UEFA and the Italian FA. UEFA has stated it lacks jurisdiction over the matter as it was not a UEFA-sanctioned competition.

In response, the KFA has escalated the issue to FIFA.

In a statement, the KFA said: “In an official letter sent to FIFA on July 18, the Korea Football Association expressed serious concern about the racist behaviour suffered by Hwang Hee-chan from an opposing team player during a recent practice match, and issued a call to prevent racial discrimination occurring on the soccer field. In order to eradicate it, we asked FIFA to further strengthen sanctions against perpetrators.”

Wolves reported that the incident took place midway through the second half of the match, during which forward Daniel Podence was sent off for retaliating with a punch.

Wolves’ manager, Gary O’Neil, consulted Hwang about whether to abandon the game, but the 28-year-old chose to continue. Wolves eventually won the match 1-0.

Following the incident, Hwang took to Instagram to express his feelings: “Racism is intolerable in sports and in all aspects of life.

After the incident, the coaching staff and my team-mates immediately told me that they would leave the field with me if needed, and they kept checking on my wellbeing. I am very grateful to my team-mates once again.”

NDC, NPP will find it difficult garnering 52% of total votes cast – Anyaa-Sowutuom MP

Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has voiced his skepticism regarding any individual or political party achieving over 52% of the vote in the upcoming general elections.

This comes in response to Fitch Solutions’ forecast, which suggests a victory for John Mahama and the NDC in the December 2024 general elections.

Fitch Solutions, an international research and data firm, in its mid-year review for Sub-Saharan Africa, highlighted that the prevailing economic conditions are likely to play a significant role in shaping voters’ decisions on December 7.

Mike Kruiniger, an Associate Director of Country Risk at Fitch Solutions, stated, “We believe that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has a stronger chance of winning the upcoming general elections compared to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). Recent polls consistently place the NDC ahead, with the most recent survey showing 54% of respondents favouring the NDC.”

During an appearance on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, Dr. Adomako expressed his doubts about the accuracy of Fitch Solutions’ prediction.

    Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi

“I am a bit weary about their results because I am rather of the opinion that December 7 for any strong party, be it the NDC or the NPP, to go beyond 52% will not be easy. That is my opinion, especially because of the trends worldwide.”

He continued, “Looking at the trend of voters and their sophistication at this point, for anybody to pronounce a 54% win puts me in doubt. I think that even if people might change the government because of the trend in this country where after two terms Ghanaians naturally would rather prefer to have a change in governance, it gives the opposition party some edge for doing nothing because of the nature of Ghanaians and our voters.”

Dr. Adomako further noted, “Moving above 51% will surprise me because, admittedly, the likes of Cheddar and the likes of the movement for change will grab some of the votes from either party. That is why I am questioning.”

He concluded by emphasizing that the NPP would not disregard the reviews. “For the NPP, I must say that we will not take the reviews for granted. The appropriate thing for us to do is to keep at what we are doing and to demonstrate how the digital economy is still above the economy.”

    Bournemouth’s Adams suffers back injury

Bournemouth midfielder Tyler Adams is set for an extended period on the sidelines after undergoing back surgery.

The USA international, who joined the Cherries from Leeds in a deal exceeding ÂŁ20 million last summer, had an injury-ridden debut season, limiting him to just four Premier League appearances.

Despite his struggles, Adams represented the USA at the Copa America. Bournemouth had advised the USA staff to manage Adams carefully, but he ended up playing in all three group matches and a pre-tournament friendly against Brazil, including the full 90 minutes of the final group game against Uruguay. Unfortunately, the USA exited the competition earlier than anticipated.

Cherries’ manager Andoni Iraola explained that Adams aggravated a back issue that had started towards the end of the domestic season, necessitating surgery as the only viable solution.

“He finished the season with an injury in his back,” Iraola stated. “He wanted to play in the Copa America because it was very important for him, but he had restrictions and was still in pain. Two days after they were knocked out, he had surgery.”

The timeline for Adams’ return remains uncertain. “He is out for some time. It is difficult to say how long, but he won’t be fit for the start of the season. September? October? I don’t know,” Iraola added.

When questioned about Bournemouth’s decision not to prevent Adams from participating in international duty, Iraola clarified, “It was not our choice. It is a decision for the nations, who are allowed to select players, and he wanted to play, thinking the injury would get better, but he felt it was getting worse.”

Adams has commenced his rehabilitation and is accompanying Bournemouth on their tour of California, which includes fixtures against Wrexham in Santa Barbara (00:00 BST on Sunday) and Arsenal in Carson (03:30 BST on Thursday).

Students at College of Education abandon campus as CETAG strike intensifies

Students at Bimbilla College of Education are facing significant challenges as they are forced to leave campus due to the ongoing strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG).

The strike, which began on June 14, 2024, has left students stranded and uncertain about their academic future.

The strike was triggered by the government’s delay in implementing an arbitral award and agreed-upon service conditions. Despite an order from the National Labour Commission to end the strike, CETAG has remained firm in its demands, leading to a complete shutdown of academic and administrative activities at the college.

With no resolution in sight, many students are running low on funds and options. Final-year students are particularly worried that the strike will disrupt their academic calendar and affect their scheduled graduation in September. First-year students also fear that their education could be compromised by the ongoing strike.

In an exclusive interview with Channel One News, students voiced their frustration and concern over the uncertainty of their academic progress. Some have resorted to private study sessions to prepare for upcoming end-of-semester exams, despite the lack of formal instruction.

The next scheduled meeting to address the strike is set for August 6, 2024. Students are urging the government to address CETAG’s grievances promptly and facilitate a resolution, particularly given the significance of the current election year.

  • Eddie Howe is committed to Newcastle United

Eddie Howe is committed to Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has reaffirmed his commitment to the club despite speculation linking him to the role of England manager.

The speculation comes in the wake of Gareth Southgate’s resignation following England’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Howe, who has been touted as a top contender for the England position, expressed his dedication to Newcastle United, highlighting his satisfaction and support at the club.

Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle from the Magpies’ training camp in Germany, Howe emphasized his contentment and the strong bond he shares with the club.

“It is an unbelievable football club. I’m very, very proud to be the manager,” Howe stated. “I love the supporters, I love the players, I love the staff. So really, there has been no thought in my mind on anything else and I have been very committed to the job here.”

Howe, appointed in November 2021 after the Saudi Arabian-backed takeover, has been instrumental in Newcastle’s rise, steering them clear of relegation and achieving a fourth-place finish in the Premier League in the 2022-23 season, securing a Champions League spot. He signed a “multi-year” contract extension last summer, which underscored his long-term vision for the club.

Newcastle’s chief executive, Darren Eales, has indicated that the club is resolute in keeping Howe, further solidifying the manager’s position amidst the England speculation.

Regarding the upcoming season, Howe expressed confidence about starting as Newcastle’s manager. “Of course that is my expectation because I am the manager of Newcastle and I am very proud to be,” he said. “But as I said, it is all about the environment I am working in. As long as that is one where I feel I can give my best, then absolutely, we will crack on and I am looking forward to next season.”

Newcastle’s first match of the 2024-25 season is scheduled against Southampton on August 17. Howe’s commitment remains unwavering, with a clear goal to win trophies and bring joy to the supporters.

The England Football Association (FA) will need to appoint a successor for Southgate, with an interim manager taking charge for England’s Nations League match against the Republic of Ireland on September 7.

“My commitment is unwavering. I am determined to win a trophy for the football club – that is in my psyche every day. I want to see joy in the supporters. I want to bring that to them, hopefully,” Howe added.

I did no wrong, nobody can do zilch to me – Egyapa Mercer speaks to PDS allegations

Tourism Minister Egyapa Mercer has denied his involvement in any dubious engagement with regards to the Power Distribution Services (PDS) scandal during his time as Deputy Energy Minister.

The Director of Legal Affairs for NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, has accused Egyapa Mercer of being part of a group referred to as the “PDS gang” that allegedly worked together to cheat Ghana.

According to him, Egyapa Mercer and his associates fraudulently stole from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) by incorporating the main company that was involved in the Power Distribution Services (PDS).

“He and his friends conspired to steal our ECG for nothing. What about that? He was the one who incorporated the lead company that was involved in the PDS. He is the secretary of the company and they conspired to steal, to defraud this country. Where are they. What has happen to them. The PDS gang…He is one of them. He had the temerity to talk about Mahama,” Edudzi Tamakloe expressly told the media.

But according to Mr Mercer, he is not to blame for any illegal undertaking that may have happened, as such, he cannot be held accountable.

In an interview on Metro TV, he said, “I committed no ill or wrong. Your footsoldiers you people sit on social media and give them hope that in the very unlikely event that when you come to power, people like Egyapa Mercer will be held to account. For what? Account for what? Nobody can do zilch to me.”

PDS was in July 2019 found to have presented invalid insurance security for the takeover of ECG assets.

The company was initially supposed to furnish the ECG with payment securities in the form of either a demand guarantee or a letter of credit issued by a bank.

The insurance guarantee came about because of difficulties experienced with raising a bank guarantee.

PDS appealed to use a demand guarantee issued by an A-rated insurance company.

PDS thus submitted the Payment Securities in the form of demand guarantees issued by a Qatari insurance firm, Al Koot Insurance and Reinsurance, which eventually became the source fraud after it was discovered that there were fabricated letters and forged signatures.

The government also noted that Al Koot did not have the capacity to engage in such a transaction based on its net worth.

The company was also not authorised to issue demand guarantees.

Tamale South NPP leadership accuses NDC members of destroying their posters

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership in the Tamale South constituency has voiced strong dissatisfaction following the defacement of their parliamentary candidate Alhaji Fuseini Musah’s posters during the recent Fire Festival celebrations.

According to the NPP, posters of their candidate were vandalized along the Lamashegu and Tamale Teaching Hospital roads, while the posters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Haruna Iddrisu, were left untouched. This has sparked accusations from the NPP, who claim the NDC is behind the incident.

At a press conference, Abdulai Abdul Razak, the NPP’s communications director for the Tamale South constituency, condemned the act as a blatant violation of political decorum and stated their intention to report the matter to the police.

He emphasized that such actions are illegal under the political parties law and warranted legal action.

“This deliberate defacing and removal of banners belonging to our diligent parliamentary candidate, Alhaji Fuseini Musah, and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is both unfortunate and distasteful,” Razak said.

“The incident, which occurred during the Fire Festival, was a clear sign of disrespect for our candidates and an attempt to undermine our campaign.”

Razak noted that the posters of Hon. Haruna Iddrisu were left intact, which he finds peculiar and suggests a targeted attack. He described the actions as irresponsible and intended to provoke conflict and confusion within the constituency.

The NPP has called on the NDC to address the behavior of their members and restore decorum to the campaign environment.

They have vowed to take the necessary legal steps to address what they perceive as a deliberate attempt to disrupt the electoral process.

“This act of vandalism is not only unreasonable but also shows a blatant disregard for the laws of our country. We are committed to ensuring that those responsible are held accountable,” Razak added.

Ghana beefs up measures for terrorism fight with UNOCT agreement

Ghana has formalized a strategic partnership with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) through the signing of a Letter of Agreement (LoA).

This collaboration is aimed at strengthening efforts against terrorism and addressing its links with transnational organized crime.

The LoA will facilitate technical support for Ghana under the United Nations Countering Terrorist Travel (‘CT Travel’) Programme. This initiative is focused on enhancing national capacities to manage threats associated with terrorist travel, leveraging Advance Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Records (PNR).

The agreement was signed by Mauro Miedico, Director of UNOCT, and Albert Kan-Dapaah, Ghana’s Minister for National Security. The signing ceremony took place in Budapest, Hungary, during the Forum celebrating the 5th Anniversary of the UN’s Countering Terrorist Travel Programme.

Miedico expressed appreciation for Ghana’s ongoing cooperation and robust engagement with UNOCT, highlighting the significance of this partnership in bolstering both national and regional security.

Kan-Dapaah, in turn, recognized the valuable support from UNOCT and reiterated Ghana’s commitment to implementing the agreed measures effectively.

The LoA will support the UN in assisting Ghana to enhance its abilities to detect and intercept terrorists and other criminal elements. This aligns with Security Council resolutions 2178 (2014), 2396 (2017), and 2482 (2019), which require Member States to ensure airlines operating within their jurisdictions provide API and PNR data to national authorities.

Launched in 2019, the UN Countering Terrorist Travel (‘CT Travel’) Programme is a global initiative aimed at equipping Member States with tools to prevent, detect, investigate, and prosecute terrorist and serious crimes.

It involves the collection and analysis of passenger data in line with Security Council resolutions, international standards, best practices, and human rights considerations.

The Programme, led by UNOCT, employs a “One-UN” approach to deliver tailored and comprehensive assistance to Member States.

It collaborates with various UN bodies and international organizations to support 76 Member States, 57 of which receive direct technical assistance. The initiative also fosters regional cooperation by sharing insights and best practices on passenger data exchange.

A Toyota Tundra reportedly from the office of the president got into an accident with a Benz 207 passenger vehicle, and a trailer truck on the Tema-bound side of the Accra-Tema motorway on Saturday morning around 8 am.

The Toyota Tundra, which was being driven by a mechanic, was struck from behind by the trailer truck. The driver of the Tundra had reportedly stopped to seek directions to Toyota Ghana when the collision happened.

The trailer truck’s impact caused the Tundra to veer off into the left lane, resulting in a secondary collision with the Benz 207.

Several individuals involved in the accident sustained minor injuries.

The crash caused a significant traffic jam on the motorway, forcing vehicles to use the shoulder of the road heading towards Tema as emergency services attended to the scene and cleared the wreckage.

Customers of Dek-Nock Investments panic, march to facility’s premises after closure by BoG

Dozens of Ghanaians are in a state of shock and agony after the Ghana Police Service and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) closed down Dek-Nock Investments, located in Nungua and Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region.

The closure, which took place on July 19, 2024, was executed in accordance with Section 20(2)(g) of the Banks and Specialised Deposit-taking Institutions Act, 2016 (Act 930).

The BoG released a statement indicating that Dek-Nock Investments was involved in unauthorized deposit-taking activities, a violation of Section 6(1) of Act 930.

“The Ghana Police Service is conducting further investigations into the operations of Dek-Nock Investments,” the statement said.

In a video gone virial on social media, several customers beseeched the company’s premises demanding for their money.

The BoG has urged customers of Dek-Nock Investments to remain calm as investigations continue, assuring that the public and all stakeholders will be kept informed about the next steps.

The statement emphasized the BoG’s commitment, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, to clamping down on illegal deposit-taking operations. Offenders will be prosecuted to maintain the integrity and stability of the financial system.

  • Tebu residents lament poor Ga South road network

Tebu residents lament poor Ga South road network

Residents of Tebu in the Ga South Municipality are raising alarms over the poor state of their local road.

The uneven and dust-ridden road conditions have prompted many residents to abandon their cars, resorting instead to motorcycles, locally known as “okada,” as their primary means of transportation.

However, the increasing incidents of motorcycle theft by unidentified individuals have discouraged okada riders from frequenting the area, leaving residents with limited transportation options.

The situation is further complicated by the absence of active representation from their Member of Parliament (MP), Sophia Akuako.

Although still technically the MP for the area, she vacated the Obom Domiabra seat to run for the Ayawaso Central constituency.

Her loss in that election and subsequent decision not to run again in 2024 have left Tebu residents feeling unrepresented in Parliament.

Residents believe this lack of representation has stalled their community’s development this year, suspecting that the MP may be reluctant to invest resources in local projects given her departure from the political scene.

Tebu’s Assemblyman, Ahortor Ebenezer, has emphasized that the road’s condition has deteriorated beyond the point of simple reshaping and requires a complete overhaul, including an asphalt overlay.

18.6m valid voters currently on EC’s voter roll

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced the addition of 778,447 new voters during the recent limited registration exercise, bringing the total number of valid voters on the roll to over 18.6 million.

This update was provided by EC chairperson Jean Mensa during a briefing to Parliament on preparations for the upcoming December 7 elections on Friday, July 19.

Jean Mensa also revealed plans for a mop-up exercise scheduled from Thursday, August 1 to Saturday, August 3. This exercise will be conducted at all district offices, including the newly established Guan district, to ensure all eligible voters are registered.

In light of this mop-up exercise, the voter exhibition exercise has been rescheduled to August.

This adjustment aims to address challenges identified during the limited voter registration period, such as violence linked to the guarantor system, where individuals were bused to registration centers.

To prevent such issues in the future, the EC plans to advocate for the Ghana Card to become the sole identification document for voter registration, aiming to streamline the process and enhance security.

Additionally, the Commission has recruited 210,000 officials who will undergo training to ensure they can effectively fulfill their roles.

Jean Mensa emphasized that the EC now has complete data on all recruited staff, which will facilitate better management and coordination of the electoral process.

  • Kasoa: Police arrest 3 for alleged baby theft

Kasoa: Police arrest 3 for alleged baby theft

Three suspects have been arrested for allegedly stealing a baby and deceiving the mother into believing the child had died in Kasoa, Central Region.

The suspects, identified as Magdalene Nana Adwoa Boafo (28), Faustina Binney (32), and Eunice Koomson (36), a teacher at Ebenezer High Academy, are currently in police custody and assisting with investigations.

The case came to light when Nana Adwoa Boafo, the prime suspect, approached the mother of the baby, Abigail Addison, during her eighth month of pregnancy. Abigail, who sells sachet water in traffic at Ofaakor, was offered financial assistance by Nana Adwoa. Subsequently, Nana Adwoa introduced Abigail to the other two suspects, who pretended to offer genuine support.

To cover their intentions, the suspects relocated Abigail from her home at Ofaakor-Jei River to an apartment in Lamptey, a suburb of Adam Nana, Kasoa, and continued to support her until she gave birth at the Kasoa Polyclinic on July 10, 2024.

The situation took a dark turn after Abigail and her healthy baby were discharged from the clinic. The suspects introduced another woman to Abigail, claiming she was a medical staffer from Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and that the baby needed treatment for infections. Abigail fell for the ruse and allowed them to take her baby.

Two days later, the suspects returned to Abigail, claiming that her baby had died at Korle-Bu and had already been buried. Their suspicious behavior prompted the landlord to report the matter to the police.

The Kasoa Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), led by DSP Doris Laryea, conducted thorough investigations, leading to the arrest of Nana Adwoa. Initially, she insisted the baby was dead but later admitted the child was alive and with her sister in Madina. She then changed her statement, indicating the baby was with Eunice in Alico City, Ofaakor.

Eunice, upon arrest, directed the police to Faustina Binney, who was found with the baby in Ablekuma. All three suspects have been arrested and are assisting with further investigations.

Abigail, who has been left traumatized by the ordeal, is calling for the suspects to be punished for their actions. The GACL continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.

  • Intensified expenditure cuts will check cedi depreciation – Economist

Intensified expenditure cuts will check cedi depreciation – Economist

Economist Dr. Ishmael Yamson has urged the Ghanaian government to consider expenditure cuts as an immediate measure to address the depreciation of the cedi.

He believes that while debt restructuring agreements with external creditors are important, they are not the primary solution to the currency’s poor performance in recent years.

“There is always a signalling effect that could convince investors about government commitment to stabilize the economy and help deal with our debt situation,” Dr. Yamson explained during an appearance on PM EXPRESS BUSINESS Edition with host George Wiafe on July 18, 2024.

He emphasized the need for the government to adopt practical and verifiable expenditure reduction measures. This approach, according to Dr. Yamson, could help manage the amount of fresh borrowing required.

The discussion focused on Ghana’s economic recovery and whether the country is on the right track. Dr. Yamson expressed concern over the government’s reliance on short-term borrowing through the Treasury bill market, warning that it could negatively impact the cedi and the country’s debt situation.

    Cedi’s Performance

Despite government efforts in restructuring Ghana’s external debts, the cedi continues to struggle against major currencies. As of July 19, 2024, the cedi was trading at â‚”15.56 to the US dollar, â‚”20.23 to the British pound, and â‚”17.02 to the euro, based on average transactional quotes from major commercial banks.

The telecommunications and manufacturing sectors remain the leading sectors demanding foreign currency, with trades on the interbank market ranging around â‚”15.38.

    Ghana’s Exports and Cedi Performance

Dr. Yamson highlighted the importance of monitoring developments in the cocoa sector, as its performance can significantly impact the cedi’s stability. He noted concerns over the recent decline in cocoa production and its potential effect on Ghana’s export earnings. With Ghana currently unable to access the Eurobond market, export proceeds are crucial for bolstering international reserves.

    Election Spending

Dr. Yamson also expressed concerns about the government’s ability to maintain fiscal prudence in an election year, despite commitments under the International Monetary Fund program. He recalled that previous administrations have struggled to adhere to fiscal discipline during election periods.

“We can talk about Yaw Osafo Marfo who tried to ensure that we did not witness any serious election overrun,” Dr. Yamson said, referencing past efforts to maintain fiscal discipline during elections.

As the December 2024 elections approach, Dr. Yamson’s advice underscores the need for the government to implement effective economic measures to stabilize the cedi and ensure long-term economic recovery.

Global IT outage hasn’t affected KIA’s operations – GACL

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has confirmed that operations at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) remain unaffected by the ongoing global IT outage that has disrupted numerous airports and airlines worldwide.

Industries globally, including airlines, banks, retail outlets, and broadcasters, are facing a major IT outage. This has resulted in grounded flights and significant delays, particularly for major U.S. airlines.

Despite assurances from Microsoft that the issue has been resolved, problems persist, with blue error screens appearing on public displays across the United States and other locations.

In a statement released on Friday, GACL management clarified that KIA’s IT systems are functioning normally and all flights are operating according to schedule.

“We assure the general public that Kotoka International Airport’s IT systems are intact. However, due to the global nature of the glitch, some flight delays and interruptions from affected countries may have a slight impact on Accra,” the statement read.

Among the 24 international airlines operating at KIA, only one has had to cancel some scheduled flights.

“All other operations remain uninterrupted and on schedule,” the statement concluded.

The GACL assured that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide necessary updates to the traveling public as the situation evolves.

  • We will no longer tolerate your destruction of our billboards – NDC warns NPP

We will no longer tolerate your destruction of our billboards – NDC warns NPP

The Mahama 2024 Campaign has issued a stern warning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding any attempts to dismantle or obstruct billboards featuring their flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, or the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidates.

The Campaign team reported that the Chief Executive of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) recently removed a billboard of Mr. Mahama, which had been erected by Alliance Media in Tema.

In a statement released on Friday, July 19, the Mahama 2024 Campaign condemned the action as “unacceptable” and described it as a provocative attempt to escalate political tensions in the country.

“Alliance Media, a legally registered Ghanaian advertising company, has the proper authorization to install Out-of-Home (OOH) and Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) advertisements nationwide. They regularly pay the required annual fees to the TMA and other assemblies. Therefore, the action by the TMA chief executive to dismantle a legally placed billboard, rented and paid for by the Mahama Campaign, is utterly unacceptable,” the statement read.

The Campaign expects Alliance Media to pursue legal action against the TMA for this incident. They also cautioned the TMA chief executive and the NPP that such actions, which provoke political conflicts and violence, harm the country’s democratic progress.

The statement also highlighted a similar incident in the Ablekuma North constituency, where an NDC parliamentary candidate’s billboard was blocked by the NPP. Despite these provocations, the Campaign noted that institutions such as the National Peace Council, as well as religious and civil society organizations, are observing these developments.

The Mahama 2024 Campaign made it clear that such actions would no longer be tolerated, warning that if they persist, their members would be instructed to take necessary measures to prevent such acts across the country.

The Campaign called on the NPP to conduct their campaign peacefully and respect the rights of other parties to advertise their political candidates and messages.

“Violence and destruction of property have no place in our political discourse,” the statement emphasized. “As President Mahama mentioned in an opinion piece on Tuesday, there must be ‘peace and decorum in our political discourse, especially in the run-up to high-stakes elections such as those we face in December this year.’”

  • Gov’t should sit up after Afrobarometer’s worrying report – Edem Senanu

Gov’t should sit up after Afrobarometer’s worrying report – Edem Senanu

Anti-corruption campaigner Edem Senanu has urged political parties in Ghana to heed the findings of the latest Afrobarometer report and work to restore trust in the country’s democracy.

The report, released 141 days before the December 2024 elections, reveals that 87% of Ghanaians believe the country is heading in the wrong direction, a sentiment echoed by nearly 9 out of 10 citizens.

The Afrobarometer democracy risk report highlights a significant decline in satisfaction with democracy across Africa, with Ghana experiencing a notable drop. In the 2011/2013 period, 74% of Ghanaians expressed satisfaction with democracy.

However, by 2021/2023, this figure had plummeted to 51%, marking a 23 percentage point decrease. This trend underscores the waning popularity of democracy among Ghanaians over the past decade.

Senanu expressed deep concern over the findings, particularly the disillusionment among the youth, which he believes poses a serious threat to the future of democracy in Ghana. He emphasized the importance of political parties addressing these issues promptly.

“I tell you that I was surprised; I didn’t think it was going to be that high. But you see, we are individuals. What is happening around the country, you are not everywhere, so people are experiencing things and drawing conclusions. It is a different thing except that for those of us in the space, the methodology used to capture this shows that it is not just a perception,” Senanu noted.

He stressed that the decline in trust should not be taken lightly, particularly given the 23% drop in confidence in democracy. “Coupled with the fact that there has been a 23% fall in our confidence in democracy, that is serious, and we should not take it lightly at all,” he added.

Senanu urged political parties to reflect on their performance and address the concerns highlighted by the report.

“I think the political parties ought to be questioning themselves because it doesn’t look like they are delivering on the promises to citizens. Government should be sitting up. I think it is a major issue that this report is highlighting for our attention,” he concluded.

  • EC will cause serious disaster if it tries to manipulate election results – Nyaho Tamakloe

A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has issued a strong caution to the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, urging it to respect the will of the people and avoid any attempts to manipulate electoral results.

He emphasized that any such attempt could have dire consequences for the nation.

In an interview with JoySports’ Atsu Tamakloe, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe stated, “In these times, any tricks by the Electoral Commission to alter the results will lead this country into a serious disaster. Young people must be vigilant and ensure this does not happen, as they stand to lose the most.”

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe also expressed skepticism about the NPP’s chances in the upcoming December polls. He specifically questioned the capability of the NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and his running mate, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, to secure a genuine victory.

“I personally do not believe that the Bawumia-Opoku Prempeh ticket can win a genuine election in this country,” he remarked.

Further, he raised concerns about the selection process of Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, suggesting that Dr. Bawumia was not given the autonomy to choose his own partner for the election.

“I predicted earlier that Bawumia would not have a free hand to pick his running mate, and that’s exactly what happened. His running mate was selected for him, which could hinder their synergy,” he said.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe also criticized the legislative efforts of some Members of Parliament to enforce their rights to use sirens and drive without adhering to speed limits, calling it a worrying trend.

Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, Jean Mensa, has reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring that the December 2024 elections accurately reflect the will of the people, emphasizing that there will be no rigging to favor any political party.

In a recent briefing to Parliament, Mrs Mensa outlined the EC’s processes for securing election integrity.

She detailed that the electoral body employs a manual system for result transmission, where results are transferred from polling stations across the country to the EC headquarters in Accra.

According to Mrs Mensa, each polling station has its own set of results, which are also duplicated for the respective party agents present. This system, she explained, makes any tampering or alteration at the central level nearly impossible.

“I would like to assure you that whatever comes from the ground, from the polling stations where all the agents of the parties are present, goes to the constituency collation centers where the agents are also present,” Mensa said.

“A tabulation is done in their presence and then it goes to the regional collation centers, followed by the national level. It is not transmitted electronically; rather, it involves hard copies of documents.”

She emphasized that the results, known as pink sheets, are scanned and sent via fax and email, ensuring that parties have access to their copies in real-time to verify the results.

“So I would like to assure you that there is absolutely no way the commission can change anything at the top because the documentation comes directly from the ground and the parties have copies,” Mensa added.

Mrs Mensa also stressed the EC’s dedication to transparency throughout the election process, stating that from registration to result declaration, the Commission will operate with the utmost transparency, fairness, and integrity.

“From the registration to the declaration, our processes are embedded with one key ingredient: transparency. We will continue to uphold transparency, fairness, and integrity as our guiding principles,” she concluded.

  • E/R: Farmers to receive 2,200 bags of fish feed from Fisheries Commission

E/R: Farmers to receive 2,200 bags of fish feed from Fisheries Commission

The Eastern Regional Fisheries Commission has embarked on the second phase of its Aquaculture for Food and Jobs (AFJ) flagship programme with the distribution of 850 bags of fish feed to local fish farmers.

This initiative aims to support fish farming and enhance job creation within the aquaculture sector.

The 850 bags of fish feed, out of a total of 2,200 bags allocated, are part of a broader effort to promote sustainable fish farming practices.

The distribution includes 900 bags of catfish feed and 1,300 bags of tilapia feed, valued at GHS 1.32 million.

Eastern Regional Director of the Fisheries Commission, Mr. Francis Barnes, revealed these details during an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the first day of the distribution.

The feed is being distributed to registered farmers and various institutions, including Asamankese Senior High School, Mpraeso Senior High School, Osiem Senior High School, Kosaach Farms, Koforidua Prison, and Nsawam Prison.

Beneficiary institutions and groups include WABA, Anyinasin, and Tease Youth Groups, among others. Each recipient is expected to receive between 100 and 200 bags of feed. The distribution is set to conclude by the end of the month, after which the focus will shift to the next phase of pond construction for fish farmers.

Mr. Barnes also highlighted previous support received by the Commission, including GHS 108,000 last year for the construction of 15 tarpaulin or earthen ponds for institutions such as Osiem Senior High School and Anyinasin Youth Group. This year, an additional GHS 135,000 has been allocated to construct 15 more ponds for new beneficiaries in the region.

The third phase of the AFJ programme will involve the distribution of fingerlings to farmers, with varying packages of support available to different beneficiaries.

Mr. Barnes encouraged fish farmers and interested individuals to utilize the AFJ resources to enhance their production and contribute to national food security.

Mr. Osei Ntim, CEO of Kosaach Farms, expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the provision of free feed is a significant relief for fish farmers who often face high feed costs.
