E/R: Farmers to receive 2,200 bags of fish feed from Fisheries Commission

The Eastern Regional Fisheries Commission has embarked on the second phase of its Aquaculture for Food and Jobs (AFJ) flagship programme with the distribution of 850 bags of fish feed to local fish farmers.

This initiative aims to support fish farming and enhance job creation within the aquaculture sector.

The 850 bags of fish feed, out of a total of 2,200 bags allocated, are part of a broader effort to promote sustainable fish farming practices.

The distribution includes 900 bags of catfish feed and 1,300 bags of tilapia feed, valued at GHS 1.32 million.

Eastern Regional Director of the Fisheries Commission, Mr. Francis Barnes, revealed these details during an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the first day of the distribution.

The feed is being distributed to registered farmers and various institutions, including Asamankese Senior High School, Mpraeso Senior High School, Osiem Senior High School, Kosaach Farms, Koforidua Prison, and Nsawam Prison.

Beneficiary institutions and groups include WABA, Anyinasin, and Tease Youth Groups, among others. Each recipient is expected to receive between 100 and 200 bags of feed. The distribution is set to conclude by the end of the month, after which the focus will shift to the next phase of pond construction for fish farmers.

Mr. Barnes also highlighted previous support received by the Commission, including GHS 108,000 last year for the construction of 15 tarpaulin or earthen ponds for institutions such as Osiem Senior High School and Anyinasin Youth Group. This year, an additional GHS 135,000 has been allocated to construct 15 more ponds for new beneficiaries in the region.

The third phase of the AFJ programme will involve the distribution of fingerlings to farmers, with varying packages of support available to different beneficiaries.

Mr. Barnes encouraged fish farmers and interested individuals to utilize the AFJ resources to enhance their production and contribute to national food security.

Mr. Osei Ntim, CEO of Kosaach Farms, expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the provision of free feed is a significant relief for fish farmers who often face high feed costs.

You’ve not shown us the decency or respect – Mahama’s team chides IEA over presidential debate

The Mahama 2024 Campaign has issued a sharp rebuke to the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) Ghana following its recent announcement of a presidential debate ahead of the December elections.

In a statement, the campaign criticized the IEA for failing to engage or inform the National Democratic Congress (NDC) before making the announcement. The NDC, one of Ghana’s major political parties, was taken by surprise by the IEA’s plans.

The campaign’s spokesperson, Joyce Mogtari, emphasized in a press release that the Constitution does not grant the IEA any authority to organize election-related activities.

“The Constitution of Ghana does not grant the IEA any authority to organize elections-related activities. The fact that the IEA has not shown the decency or respect to at least inform the NDC of its plans raises serious questions about its motives,” Mogtari stated.

The Mahama 2024 Campaign, in its Friday release, accused the IEA of lacking the decency and respect to inform the NDC of its debate plans, which they believe raises questions about the institute’s intentions.

Furthermore, the campaign alleged that the IEA is “acting as a front for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and seeks to manipulate the electoral process in favor of the ruling party.”

Highlighting Mr. Mahama’s commitment to addressing the needs and concerns of the Ghanaian people, the statement mentioned that his campaign conversations have targeted a wide range of audiences.

The campaign accused the IEA of using the NDC’s name to promote its activities, describing this as a blatant attempt to misrepresent the party.

The Mahama 2024 Campaign concluded by assuring Ghanaians of the NDC’s dedication to meaningful and respectful engagement with the public, ensuring that all voices are heard and their needs addressed.

Meanwhile, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has dared former President Mahama to a debate on the economy.

The NDC has however criticised the Vice President of prioritising a presidential debate over ensuring the recovery of the economy.

Dek-Nock Investments shut down for unlawful deposit-taking operation

The Ghana Police Service and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) have closed down Dek-Nock Investments, located in Nungua and Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region.

The closure, which took place today, July 19, 2024, was executed in accordance with Section 20(2)(g) of the Banks and Specialised Deposit-taking Institutions Act, 2016 (Act 930).

The BoG released a statement indicating that Dek-Nock Investments was involved in unauthorized deposit-taking activities, a violation of Section 6(1) of Act 930.

“The Ghana Police Service is conducting further investigations into the operations of Dek-Nock Investments,” the statement said.

The BoG has urged customers of Dek-Nock Investments to remain calm as investigations continue, assuring that the public and all stakeholders will be kept informed about the next steps.

The statement emphasized the BoG’s commitment, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, to clamping down on illegal deposit-taking operations. Offenders will be prosecuted to maintain the integrity and stability of the financial system.

“The Bank assures the general public of its commitment to promoting the integrity and stability of the financial system,” the statement affirmed.

EC won’t manipulate 2024 elections to favour any party – Jean Mensa

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, Jean Mensa, has reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring that the December 2024 elections accurately reflect the will of the people, emphasizing that there will be no rigging to favor any political party.

In a recent briefing to Parliament, Mrs Mensa outlined the EC’s processes for securing election integrity.

She detailed that the electoral body employs a manual system for result transmission, where results are transferred from polling stations across the country to the EC headquarters in Accra.

According to Mrs Mensa, each polling station has its own set of results, which are also duplicated for the respective party agents present. This system, she explained, makes any tampering or alteration at the central level nearly impossible.

“I would like to assure you that whatever comes from the ground, from the polling stations where all the agents of the parties are present, goes to the constituency collation centers where the agents are also present,” Mensa said.

“A tabulation is done in their presence and then it goes to the regional collation centers, followed by the national level. It is not transmitted electronically; rather, it involves hard copies of documents.”

She emphasized that the results, known as pink sheets, are scanned and sent via fax and email, ensuring that parties have access to their copies in real-time to verify the results.

“So I would like to assure you that there is absolutely no way the commission can change anything at the top because the documentation comes directly from the ground and the parties have copies,” Mensa added.

Mrs Mensa also stressed the EC’s dedication to transparency throughout the election process, stating that from registration to result declaration, the Commission will operate with the utmost transparency, fairness, and integrity.

“From the registration to the declaration, our processes are embedded with one key ingredient: transparency. We will continue to uphold transparency, fairness, and integrity as our guiding principles,” she concluded.

EC probes how NPP’s Ahiagbah voted in 2020 without having name in register

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has announced that investigations are ongoing into how Richard Ahiagbah, Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was able to vote in the 2020 general elections despite not being listed on the voters’ register.

The controversy erupted after Ahiagbah confirmed that he voted in the 2020 elections even though his name was absent from the official register.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) had previously accused Mr Ahiagbah of double registration, alleging that he attempted to register at a Ketu South electoral registration center.

In his account, Mr Ahiagbah stated that upon visiting his polling station, he was informed by Electoral Commission officials that his name was not in the register.

Despite this, an EC official recorded his identification number and other pertinent details at the bottom of the register, allowing him to cast his vote.

During a briefing to Parliament regarding preparations for the 2024 elections, Mrs. Mensa expressed concern over the incident. She assured the public that the matter is under thorough investigation.

“He was not on the register but he was able to vote in 2020. It is something that we are looking into and we can assure you that in due course, we will come up with our findings and let you know,” she stated.

Mensa emphasized that ensuring such irregularities do not occur in the upcoming elections is a priority for the Commission.

“I can assure you that before the elections, we will give you a little update on how that happened,” she added.

Global IT disruption affects international flights from Accra

Several international flights departing from Accra have been affected today, Friday, July 19, due to widespread disruptions in the software systems used by airlines.

The issue, which stems from a problem with Microsoft-based computers, has impacted the operations of multiple airlines globally.

United Airlines issued a statement acknowledging that a third-party software outage has affected their computer systems worldwide, including those used in Ghana.

“We are resuming some flights but expect schedule disruptions to continue throughout Friday. We have issued a waiver to make it easier for customers to change their travel plans via United.com or the United app,” the statement read.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) also addressed the issue, informing travelers that the disruptions are beyond the control of airline companies.

IATA emphasized that measures are being put in place to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

“Air transport is among the many industries affected by today’s worldwide IT issues with Microsoft and Crowdstrike. We sympathize with travelers who face disruption because of these issues which are outside of airlines’ control, and we thank travelers for their patience while Microsoft and Crowdstrike deploy solutions,” IATA said.

Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates and possible changes to their travel plans.

Bawumia and Napo can’t win the election for NPP fairly – Nyaho Tamakloe claims

A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has expressed significant doubts about the party’s chances of success in the upcoming December elections.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe questioned the viability of the ticket comprising NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his running mate, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh.

In an exclusive interview with JoySports’ Atsu Tamakloe, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe stated, “That ticket I personally don’t believe can win a genuine election in this country.”

He suggested that the choice of running mate might hinder the ticket’s success.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe also implied that Dr. Bawumia did not have a significant role in selecting his running mate, which he believes will affect the ticket’s overall effectiveness.

“And as I predicted earlier, that there is no way Bawumia will have a free hand to pick his running mate? Never. I said it earlier, I have the tape. [I said] his running mate was picked for him. And that’s exactly what happened,” he asserted.

He further questioned the rationale behind not allowing Dr. Bawumia to choose his own running mate, implying that this decision could create a lack of synergy between the two candidates.

“Why should Bawumia not be allowed to pick his own running mate? Whether he will gel with his running mate, that is his palava,” he added.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe also criticized recent controversial statements made by Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as Napo, regarding Kwame Nkrumah. He suggested that Napo’s remarks have led to significant backlash, which could be challenging for him to overcome.

“Certain mistakes are made and they are difficult to correct. So that mistake made by Napo, look at the reaction as a result of his statement that has sort of degenerated almost everywhere, even outside the country. Nigerians are even talking about it,” he explained.

Additionally, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe issued a warning to the Electoral Commission, cautioning that any attempts to manipulate election results could have severe consequences.

“Any tricks they will play to change the results will lead this country into a serious disaster,” he warned.

  • Anyidoho ‘attacks’ Mahama for campaigning to UG students

Anyidoho ‘attacks’ Mahama for campaigning to UG students

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has criticised the flagbearer of the party, John Mahama, for his recent nostalgic visit to his old room at the University of Ghana’s Commonwealth Hall, which created a wave of excitement among the students.

Accompanied by John Dumelo, the NDC Parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency in the 2024 elections, and other party executives, Mahama’s visit was part of a working tour of the constituency.

Revisiting Room A32, where he once resided as an undergraduate history student, Mahama’s return to Vandal City—the nickname for Commonwealth Hall—was met with overwhelming enthusiasm.

Reacting to this, Mr Anyidoho who has for sometime mounted scathing critiques against the NDC alleged that Mr Mahama is imitating the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) despite reportedly condemning his engagement with students in schools.

“Did JM not insult Bawumia – calling him a “concert man” for visiting schools & interacting with students? what is JM doing singing/dancing with students? He is back from Russia with no ideas – no option but to copy Bawumia. Bawumia has become the pace setter,” he wrote in a post on X.

It must be clarified that in a statement, the NDC Walewale Constituency Communications Officer, Mashood Issifu Mahama, accused the NPP of coercing headteachers to line up the students on the streets of Walewale to welcome its flagbearer.

“It is deeply concerning that headteachers are coerced into diverting students from their classrooms to serve as cheerleaders for political campaigns. Parents entrust their children to schools with the expectation that they will receive quality education, not be used as political pawns,” he said.

There are no reports that corroborate Mr Anyidoho’s claim that Mr Mahama condemned the Vice President for engaging students.

The atmosphere was charged as students chanted campaign songs in support of the former president.

Videos circulating on social media captured Mahama’s joy as he engaged with the students, joining them in a lively ‘jama’ session, showcasing a strong connection with his alma mater.

  • Ensure GN Bank’s license is reinstated if you win 2024 elections – Nduom to Mahama

Ensure GN Bank’s license is reinstated if you win 2024 elections – Nduom to Mahama

The management of Groupe Nduom has formally petitioned the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, to reinstate GN Bank’s licence if he wins the December 7 elections.

GN Bank’s licence was revoked by the Bank of Ghana in August 2019.

In a meeting with the former president in Accra on Friday, July 19, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, Global President of Groupe Nduom, voiced concerns over the deteriorating state of the bank’s 300 branches nationwide.

He emphasized the importance of restoring the bank to support job creation and economic stability.

“We believe that if this administration doesn’t give us our licence before they leave and start paying the money before they leave, we believe that the next one, will understand the situation and give the licence back. So we are continuing with the hope and preparing and working our plans with the hope that, at some point, we will get the licence back and we’ll bring the jobs back. Because it is the jobs, that we are also looking for,” Dr. Nduom stated.

He further argued that the closure of such a large financial entity is detrimental to the country’s economic interests.

“So we feel that collapsing a 300-branch financial entity is inimical to the economic interest of the country. So whether it even belongs to us or belongs to someone else, it is something that needs to be there,” he added.

In response, the NDC’s flagbearer criticized the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for its decision to revoke the licences of several indigenous financial institutions during the 2019 banking sector cleanup.

Mahama described the action as hasty and unfair, highlighting the negative impact on local capital in the financial sector.

“I do think that government was hasty in what it did. If you look at the criteria that was used, I mean, it didn’t fit. It was, it was not a one-size-fits-all. I mean, it was just like different rules for different folks and so, yes, as you said, a lot of these banks had also financed government suppliers and contractors and the government owed them and they owed the banks. But how would they recover that money if you don’t pay the contractors to pay them? And so I do think that it was hasty, and it’s affected indigenous capital in the financial and banking sector. And we have pledged that we would work to restore, you know, the capital of indigenous businesses in the financial sector,” Mahama stated.

Mahama also revealed plans to initiate an independent review of the banking sector cleanup process.

“So we are advocating an independent review of the processes that went into the banking sector clean up and where we believe these were unjustifiable, look at the restoration of the licences of these banks,” he concluded.

Serwaa Amihere ‘befriends’ Spiky after he won $250k court case

GHOne presenter, Serwaa Amihere, had an engagement with Ghanaian music producer Kwabena Ofei-Kwadey Nkrumah, professionally known as Kobby Spiky, who recently secured a significant legal victory in a copyright infringement case against the Confederation of African Football (CAF), according to recent reports.

The lawsuit, which dates back to 2022, centered on Spiky’s claim that CAF had used his music beat titled “Okomfo Anokye” without authorization for promotional purposes.

After a lengthy two-year legal battle, Justice Emmanuel Lodoh presided over the case and ruled in favor of Spiky.

While CAF acknowledged using Spiky’s work for promotional activities, they maintained that there was no commercial exploitation involved. However, the court sided with Spiky, ordering CAF to remove all unauthorized materials featuring his music from their social media platforms.

As part of the ruling, Kobby Spiky was awarded damages amounting to USD 250,000 in Ghanaian cedis, reflecting the impact and value of his creative work.

Following the court’s ruling, Serwaa Amihere who interviewed Spikey jokingly claimed a part of the money awarded to him by the court with the justification that they are friends.

“This man here is $250,000 richer and he is my friend. And so I am entitled to some part of the money,” she said amidst inconsistent laughter.

She then asked, “Spiky, are we not friends?” and he responded, “Yes, we are.”

Reacting to the court’s decision, Spiky expressed satisfaction with the outcome and highlighted its broader significance for Ghana’s creative arts industry.

“This victory isn’t just for me; it’s a win, especially for all creatives and for young Ghanaians who have lost faith in the system,” he remarked.

Police greenlight Minority’s second demo against BoG leadership

The Ghana Police Service has approved the Minority caucus in Parliament’s second protest, scheduled for July 30, aimed at demanding the removal of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, and his two deputies from office.

The approval follows productive discussions between the police and Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga. In a letter dated Wednesday, July 17, the police urged the organizers to ensure that the protest does not disturb public peace.

The NDC MPs argue that the governor, who they claim oversaw significant mismanagement at the Central Bank, should be replaced with a more competent individual. They point to a GH¢60.81 billion loss recorded by the Bank in the 2022 fiscal year and the allocation of over $250 million for constructing a new headquarters as evidence of poor management.

On October 3, 2023, members of the caucus organized a protest calling for the resignation of the governor and his deputies.

The protesters gathered at the Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle and marched through several key locations, including Adabraka, Ridge Roundabout, and the High Court Complex Traffic Light, before ending at Independence Square. However, their attempt to present a petition to the governor was thwarted when he did not meet them personally, sending his head of security instead.

The initial protest was deemed unsuccessful, prompting the Minority caucus to plan a new protest date, which took nearly a year to finalize.

During this period, Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga filed a Right to Information Act (RTI) request to the BoG, seeking detailed information on the combined losses of approximately GH¢70 billion reported in BoG’s financial statements for 2022 and 2023, as well as the over GH¢250 million spent on the new head office and a clinic under construction.

The central bank stated that this information was available to the public.

IEA did not consult us before announcing presidential debate – Mahama’s campaign

Marseille sign forward Greenwood from Man Utd in €31.6m deal

Olympique de Marseille has finalized the signing of forward Mason Greenwood from Manchester United in a transfer deal worth up to €31.6 million (£26.6 million).

The 22-year-old, who emerged from Manchester United’s youth academy, has committed to a contract with the French club that will keep him at Marseille until 2029.

Greenwood’s tenure at Manchester United saw its highs and lows. After making his debut in 2019 and demonstrating significant promise by scoring 35 goals in 129 appearances, his time with the club was abruptly interrupted in January 2022 due to serious legal issues. Charges of attempted rape and assault were dropped in February 2023.

During a loan spell at Getafe last season, Greenwood managed to rejuvenate his career, scoring 10 goals and providing six assists in 36 appearances. Following a six-month internal investigation into his conduct, Manchester United and Greenwood mutually agreed to part ways in August 2023.

The decision by Marseille to sign Greenwood has not been without controversy, drawing criticism from various quarters, including the mayor of Marseille, due to the sensitive nature of the allegations previously leveled against him.

Despite the backlash, Marseille proceeded with the transfer, aiming to strengthen their squad with Greenwood’s addition. Manchester United has secured a substantial sell-on clause as part of the deal, maintaining an interest in Greenwood’s future performance.

Greenwood’s first opportunity to play in England as a Marseille player could arise on August 3, when Marseille is set to face Sunderland in a pre-season friendly at Bradford City’s Valley Parade, due to renovations at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light.

  • 87% Ghanaians say the country has lost its direction under Akufo-Addo – Afrobarometer

87% Ghanaians say the country has lost its direction under Akufo-Addo – Afrobarometer

A recent democracy risk report by Afrobarometer has revealed a stark decline in public confidence in Ghana’s direction, with 87% of Ghanaians, or nearly 9 out of 10, expressing concerns about the country’s trajectory.

This comes just 141 days before the 2024 December polls, where citizens will elect a new President and parliamentarians.

The report highlights a significant drop in satisfaction with democracy in Ghana over the past decade. In 2011/2013, 74% of Ghanaians were satisfied with the state of democracy.

However, by 2021/2023, this figure had plummeted to 51%, marking a 23 percentage point decline. This trend reflects a broader decline in democratic satisfaction across Africa.

The report also points to generational disparities in attitudes towards democracy and military rule. It notes that while Africa’s youth generally support democracy, they are more open to military intervention than older citizens.

This trend is mirrored in Ghana, where acceptance of military rule has increased. In 2011/2013, 86% of Ghanaians rejected military rule, but this figure dropped to 68% by 2021/2023.

Afrobarometer’s findings underscore concerns about the integrity of Ghana’s democratic processes. The report notes that the country’s reputation for clean elections has been marred by increased violence, with eight fatalities during the 2020 presidential polls. It also criticizes President Nana Akufo-Addo for what it describes as heavy-handed tactics, including media suppression and undermining institutional accountability.

Akufo-Addo has failed us miserably, F9! – UG students

Students at the University of Ghana in Accra have voiced strong dissatisfaction with the performance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, asserting that it has failed to meet expectations and left Ghana in a deteriorated state.

According to the students, if the NPP’s governance were evaluated using academic grades, it would earn an F9, the lowest possible mark.

During a recent campus tour by Mahama, students expressed their support for the former president and criticized the current administration’s handling of the economy.

One student conveyed her discontent by comparing President Nana Akufo-Addo’s performance to an academic failure.

“The current government has failed us. He [Akufo-Addo] has failed us like F9, failed. Not even E8. F9 failed. He has failed us miserably,” she stated.

Miriam, another student, was resolute in her belief that Mahama would win the upcoming election.

“It is not likely, he is winning the elections. Period. You can’t tell us anything. That is a fact. We are choosing experience. That is a fact. Nobody can tell us anything,” she asserted.

Miriam praised Mahama for his track record and expressed confidence in his ability to manage the economy effectively.

Despite acknowledging some mistakes made during Mahama‘s previous tenure, she emphasized that his overall performance and achievements would resonate positively with voters.

This critique of the NPP aligns with recent findings from Fitch Solutions, a London-based research and data firm. The firm’s analysis suggests that the NPP faces significant challenges and is likely to be defeated by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming December 7 general elections.

Fitch Solutions has consistently forecasted that 54 percent of surveyed respondents believe NDC candidate John Dramani Mahama will secure victory in the presidential race.

There is corruption everywhere under Akufo-Addo’s gov’t – Domelevo

Former Auditor General Daniel Yao Domelevo has delivered a critique of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration led by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He has accused the government of fostering widespread corruption that is exacerbating the suffering of Ghanaian citizens.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on July 19, Domelevo, who was controversially retired by the president as ruled by the Supreme Court, highlighted the severe implications of alleged corruption under the current government.

Domelevo expressed deep frustration over the state of governance, asserting that corruption has become pervasive and is negatively impacting the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.

He emphasized that citizens are struggling to make ends meet, while those in positions of power live extravagantly.

“Corruption is everywhere; you don’t have to look far,” Domelevo said. “Look at the lifestyles of people in government. Some individuals who have dedicated their lives to serving in the government are now finding it difficult to secure even a basic meal.”

He cited specific instances of financial mismanagement, including reports of payments made to a South African company for a sky train project that never materialized. “We have heard that around 2 million dollars were paid for a project that didn’t happen,” he explained.

“Ghana has ended up with the most expensive hole in history. These are not just perceptions; they are concrete examples of mismanagement and corruption.”

According to Domelevo, the current administration’s approach to corruption has reached unprecedented levels, creating a sense of frustration among both the public and government employees.

He described corruption as having evolved into a competitive endeavor among successive governments, each striving to outdo the other in corrupt practices.

“Successive governments seem to be engaged in a marathon of corruption, with each administration escalating the level of corruption,” Domelevo said. “The current level is unsustainable, and immediate action is needed.”

Domelevo called for a decisive response to combat corruption, urging the government to hold corrupt officials accountable and prosecute those involved.

“It doesn’t matter how many days or months are left; something must be done now. The corrupt officials must be identified and prosecuted, rather than just being observed while evidence of their wrongdoing accumulates.”

I received information about NDC’s plot to shoot my son – Hawa Koomson

Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has made startling allegations against the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), claiming that the party had orchestrated a plot to murder her son, Ato Koomson.

This shocking revelation was made during a Peace Talk event held at the Kasoa Odikro Palace, which aimed to mediate conflicts between the NDC and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the constituency.

Ato Koomson was attacked and stabbed during a voter transfer exercise, sustaining a severe chest injury allegedly inflicted by an NDC ward organiser.

In her first public statement on the matter, Hawa Koomson revealed that she had received prior information about an intended assassination plot against her son, including details about the supposed assailant.

“I had received information about a plot to shoot my son,” Koomson disclosed.

She added that she had promptly informed the police about the threat, as she was aware of the identity of the person supposedly hired to carry out the attack.

However, she expressed deep frustration with the police’s handling of the case, stating that despite identifying the suspect to law enforcement before the incident, it later emerged that he was indeed the individual who attacked her son.

The Peace Talk event, attended by local and opinion leaders, sought to address tensions between the NDC and NPP in the area.

During the meeting, Stephen Ofosu Agyari, the NDC Constituency Chairman for Awutu Senya East, committed to working with party members to ensure a peaceful electoral process, highlighting a shared interest in maintaining harmony despite the recent allegations.

  • We are rather making Bawumia too popular, let’s change strategy – Top NDC member tells party

We are rather making Bawumia too popular, let’s change strategy – Top NDC member tells party

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has raised serious concerns over the party’s current strategy to discredit Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In an open letter published on ghanaguardian.com, James Essilfie Conduah, warned that the party’s attempts to label Dr. Bawumia as a liar are not only ineffective but are inadvertently increasing his popularity.

Conduah, who has closely followed Ghanaian elections since 1996, criticized the NDC’s messaging approach for the 2024 campaign.

He expressed his dismay, stating, “Having actively followed seven general elections, from the 1996 election, which the late President Rawlings won, I must admit, rather reluctantly and with disappointment, that the 2024 elections campaign of our party is the least effective in terms of messaging.”

Despite the NDC’s efforts to tarnish Dr. Bawumia’s reputation, Conduah observed that the Vice President’s popularity continues to surge.

He explained, “It was obvious to us over the last couple of years that the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, would be the likely flagbearer for the NPP in the 2024 Presidential elections. We, therefore, set out with a strategy to destroy his credibility by labelling him a liar at every opportunity.”

Initially, Conduah supported this strategy, but he has since re-evaluated its effectiveness.

“This strategy appears to be backfiring because, as Dr. Bawumia goes around the country, he appears to be more popular than ever. How come a man we have spent all our time with our communicators, labeling and branding a liar, is still popular with the people? The answer, obviously, is simple. When you label somebody a liar, you have to be able to prove, with evidence, the lies he has told.”

Conduah admitted that Dr. Bawumia has fulfilled many promises that the NDC previously dismissed.

“While we continue to tag him a liar, hoping it will stain his image, Bawumia is going around selling his message about what he has done as Vice President to Ghanaians. He is pointing out his achievements and explaining his vision. To be honest, I have watched videos of Dr. Bawumia on the campaign trail, and his message is compelling. And as a sympathiser of the NDC, this worries me.”

The open letter also highlighted the growing support for Dr. Bawumia in various Northern regions, where he has received enthusiastic receptions during his campaign tour. Conduah’s concerns are echoed by other NDC members, who have noted the large crowds welcoming the Vice President.

Member of Parliament for Tolon Constituency, Habib Iddrisu, remarked on the NDC’s anxiety over Dr. Bawumia’s campaign momentum.

“… they are frightened by the movement of our flagbearer; he is a serious campaigner, the message. So they get the feedback from their constituencies,” Iddrisu said on State of Affairs on GHOne TV with Lantam Papanko.

Conduah’s letter also underscored the various government initiatives spearheaded by Dr. Bawumia that have resonated with voters, including Agenda 111, One Constituency One Ambulance, Zongo Development Fund, and the Digital Address System. He argued that these achievements have strengthened Dr. Bawumia’s appeal to the electorate.

“How can a voter ignore someone who has initiated or championed so many good policies such as Agenda 111, One Constituency One Ambulance, Zongo Development Fund, Ghanacard, and the Gold for Oil policy, among others? When Bawumia announced that drones would deliver medical supplies to remote areas, we called him a liar! He has achieved this, so how do we convince Ghanaians that he is a liar? What he is selling he has done are real issues that matter to the populace, and they appreciate Dr. Bawumia for it,” Conduah said.

Conduah concluded his letter with a call for the NDC to reassess its campaign tactics. He urged the party to shift focus from undermining Dr. Bawumia’s credibility to presenting a compelling and policy-driven alternative to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

  • Branding Bawumia a liar is no longer working – Top NDC member worries over 2024 election

Branding Bawumia a liar is no longer working – Top NDC member worries over 2024 election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is apparently experiencing internal unease as its strategy to undermine Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s credibility appears to be backfiring.

In an open letter published by ghanaguardian.com, a concerned NDC sympathiser, James Essilfie Conduah, expressed salient concerns and called for a change in the party’s campaign approach, highlighting the ineffectiveness of branding Dr. Bawumia as a liar.

Conduah, who has actively followed Ghanaian elections since 1996, voiced his disappointment with the main opposition party’s current campaign strategy.

“Having actively followed seven general elections, from the 1996 election, which the late President Rawlings won, I must admit, rather reluctantly and with disappointment, that the 2024 elections campaign of our party is the least effective in terms of messaging,” he wrote.

Despite the NDC’s efforts to label Dr. Bawumia as untruthful, the Vice President’s popularity continues to rise.

Conduah noted, “It was obvious to us over the last couple of years that the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, would be the likely flagbearer for the NPP in the 2024 Presidential elections. We, therefore, set out with a strategy to destroy his credibility by labelling him a liar at every opportunity.”

Initially, Conduah believed this strategy was effective. However, he has since reconsidered its wisdom.

Conduah acknowledged that Dr. Bawumia has delivered on many promises that the NDC dismissed as unattainable.

Contrary to the NDC’s assertions, Dr. Bawumia, the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 Presidential elections, has been showcasing his achievements and vision during his campaign trail, which, according to Conduah, is resonating with many Ghanaians.

And as a sympathiser of the NDC, this worries me,” Conduah stated in the open letter.

Information gathered from the NDC suggests that the large crowds welcoming Dr. Bawumia during his tours in certain Northern areas are causing significant worry among opposition party leaders. In his ongoing campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia’s entourage made stops at Yendi, Nanton, and Karaga, receiving a massive outpouring of love from party supporters and sympathisers.

In a recent media commentary, the Member of Parliament for Tolon Constituency, Habib Iddrisu, noted that the NDC has been stricken with fear by the movement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. “… they are frightened by the movement of our flagbearer; he is a serious campaigner, the message. So they get the feedback from their constituencies,” Iddrisu said on State of Affairs on GHOne TV with Lantam Papanko.

James Essilfie Conduah, in his open letter, also highlighted various government initiatives spearheaded by Dr. Bawumia that have gained significant traction among voters. These initiatives include Agenda 111, One Constituency One Ambulance, Zongo Development Fund, Ghanacard, Digital Address System, Mobile Money Interoperability, Paperless Ports, and the Gold for Oil policy, among others.

“How can a voter ignore someone who has initiated or championed so many good policies such as Agenda 111, One Constituency One Ambulance, Zongo Development Fund, Ghanacard, the ability to travel to Ghana with your Ghanacard, Digital Address System, Mobile Money Interoperability, Paperless Ports, Gold for Oil, buying ECG credit on the mobile phone, renewing NHIS membership on your mobile phone, solving the problem of ghost workers, amongst others?”

Conduah admitted to the failure and lack of credibility in the NDC’s attempt to label Dr. Bawumia a liar, noting that the evidence points to the contrary, making the strategy impractical.

He called on the party’s campaign leadership to reassess its tactics and focus on policies to regain voter confidence and present a compelling alternative to the ruling NPP.

    Read Conduah’s open letter below:

Let’s change our campaign strategy on Dr Bawumia – an open letter by a concerned NDC sympathiser

    Dear Comrades,

As a concerned sympathiser of the great National Democratic Congress, I write this open letter to the leadership of my party, with reservations and disappointment; and also with unusual frankness from a party fanatic.

Having actively followed seven general elections, from the 1996 election which the late President Rawlings won, I must admit, rather reluctantly and with disappointment, that the 2024 elections campaign of our party, is the least effective, in terms of messaging

It was obvious to us over the last couple of years that the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will be the likely flagbearer for the NPP, in the 2024 Presidential elections. We therefore set out with a strategy to destroy his credibility by labeling him a liar at every opportunity.

Initially I thought this was a very good strategy and it appeared to be working for some time. However, as the campaign has started in earnest, I am having second thoughts about the wisdom of this strategy. This strategy appears to be backfiring because as Dr. Bawumia goes around the country he appears to be more popular than ever.

How come a man we have spent all our time, with our communicators, to label and brand a liar, still popular with the people? The answer, obviously is simple. When you label somebody a liar, you have to be able to prove, with evidence the lies he has told. But over the years, we have branded him a liar, yet, Bawumia continues to point to many things he said he would do, which we said he could not do, which, he has been able to do. This is an honest admission, which any strategist for my party should point out.

While we continue to tag him a liar, hoping it will stain his image, Bawumia is going round selling his message about what he has done as Vice President to Ghanaians. He is pointing out his achievements and explaining his vision.

To be honest, I have watched videos of Dr. Bawumia on the campaign trail and his message is compelling. And as a sympathiser of the NDC, this worries me.

How can a voter ignore some one who has initiated or championed so many good policies such as the Agenda 111, One Constituency One Ambulance, Zongo Development Fund, Ghanacard, the ability to travel to Ghana with your Ghanacard, Digital Address System, Mobile Money Interoperability, Paperless Ports, Gold for Oil, Buying ECG credit on the mobile phone, renewing NHIS membership on your mobile phone, solving the problem of ghost workers, amongst others.

When Bawumia announced that drone would deliver medical supplies to remote areas, we called him a liar! He has achieved this, so how do we convince Ghanaians that he is a liar? What he is selling he has done are real issues that matter to the populace and they appreciate Dr. Bawumia for it.

Our strategy of trying to label him as somewhat untruthful does not hold water with most voters who have come to acknowledge Dr Bawumia as the best VP in the fourth republic.

My advice to our NDC campaign leadership is that we should change course and rather attack Dr. Bawumia on his policies. We are rather making him more popular by trying to brand him as a liar because we rather appear to be lying to the Ghanaian public.

We cannot continuously tag him a liar, when the evidence to the public points to the contrary.

    A word to the wise…… !

Malik Basintale ‘destroys’ Minister on live TV, lists state assets, contracts he secured for his family

A heated exchange unfolded on live television between Malik Basintale, Deputy National Communication Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and Amidu Issahaku Chinnia, Deputy Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources on Thursday, July 18, 2024.

The confrontation took place during a broadcast on GHOne TV, where Basintale accused Chinnia of making false allegations against former President John Dramani Mahama regarding the acquisition of state lands and properties.

Basintale charged Chinnia, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Sissala East constituency, with hypocrisy for accusing Mahama of buying state lands while allegedly acquiring several state assets himself.

“Honourable Chinnia was deputy minister, yesterday I heard him ranting on Good Morning Ghana two days ago that President Mahama bought this, President Mahama bought this state land. When he was asked to prove it, he failed to do so,” Basintale asserted.

He went on to list specific instances of purported state land acquisitions by Chinnia, claiming, “As we speak now, his radio station is on a land in Tumu. That land was government land, it belonged to the local assembly. His radio station is there. How did he acquire that land? Number two, close to the stadium in Tumu is government land, as we speak now, he’s putting up a filling station there. How did he acquire that land? State land. Yet he sat on TV and was mentioning President Mahama’s name as if that was even true. Meanwhile, you have been acquiring state property.”

Basintale also alleged that Chinnia had benefited from sole sourcing, accusing him of awarding contracts to a company formed by his associates.

“His brother went to form a company and the company is called Batowese. His driver was also part of forming that company. His brother is called Abdel Bazaar. His driver is called Dimbie Yahya. And his direct cousin is called Olatunji Amuda. They formed a company called Batowese, came to him as deputy minister, together with his minister at the ministry. And he awarded a contract, a road contract worth 12 million to his own brother. They captured all the projects in Tumu,” Basintale claimed.

In response, Chinnia defended his actions, stating that acquiring state properties is not a crime as long as proper procedures are followed.

“It’s not a crime for any Ghanaian to go through the proper process established to buy state land. It has never been the case,” Chinnia clarified.

He emphasized that no law prohibits public officials from purchasing state lands, provided they adhere to the established guidelines.

We can’t pay you until Presidency directs us to – Finance Ministry to NABCo trainees

The Finance Ministry has responded to a petition from Nation Builders Corps (NABCo) trainees regarding their unpaid arrears for the past nine months.

The Ministry clarified that grievances should be directed to the Office of the President since the programme falls under its jurisdiction.

In a letter dated July 11, the Finance Ministry advised the trainees to submit any additional documentation that might support their claims for payment.

The Ministry assured that once these documents are reviewed and validated, the outstanding payments will be processed, emphasizing the importance of following proper channels to address financial issues related to the NABCO programme.

During a campaign tour in the Volta Region on June 2, 2024, Vice President and New Patriotic Party Flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia promised to pay the nine-month arrears owed to vulnerable former NABCo trainees. This pledge highlighted the ongoing concerns regarding the programme, which was initially designed to run for three years and was later extended for an additional year.

NABCo aimed to engage 100,000 young graduates, with the government investing approximately GH¢2.2 billion into the policy. Despite this investment, many corps members have complained about the non-payment of allowances. The programme was officially said to have ended in October 2021, but trainees were asked to continue working.

During the presentation of the 2022 budget, the government indicated that the YouStart programme and a Digital Inclusion program would gradually absorb the remaining NABCo trainees, providing alternative pathways for their continued engagement and support.

Mahama swamped by Commonwealth students during visit at UG

Former President John Dramani Mahama recently paid a nostalgic visit to his old room at the University of Ghana’s Commonwealth Hall, creating a wave of excitement among the students.

The atmosphere was charged as students chanted campaign songs in support of the former president.

Videos circulating on social media captured Mahama’s joy as he engaged with the students, joining them in a lively ‘jama’ session, showcasing a strong connection with his alma mater.

Gov’t not responsible for GHC5.3m compensation to Bulgarian Embassy – Lands Ministry

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has categorically refuted the recent claims made by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu.

According to Mr Ablakwa, the government allegedly owes GH¢5.3 million in compensation to the Bulgarian Embassy.

In a statement released on Thursday, July 18, the Ministry dismissed Ablakwa’s assertions as entirely baseless and misleading.

The statement clarified that there is no financial obligation on the part of the government towards the Bulgarian Embassy.

Mr. Ablakwa had previously alleged that the government was set to compensate the Bulgarian government with GH¢5,383,000 due to the demolition of its embassy in 2017.

He stated that this compensation amount was determined by the Land Valuation Division of the Lands Commission last year and warned that the figure could increase significantly because of the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.

Contrary to these claims, the Lands Ministry insisted that the government’s position remains unequivocal: no compensation is owed to the Bulgarian Embassy. The Ministry highlighted that the recommended payment was to be made by Jojo Hagan, who was responsible for ordering the demolition.

“The attention of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has, again, been drawn to allegations by the Hon. Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to the effect that Government is supposed to pay the Bulgarian Embassy an amount of Five Million, Three Hundred and Eighty-Three Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHS5,383,000.00) for demolishing their building.”

The Ministry further clarified: “A cursory reading of the Executive Summary of the Report of the Sole Inquirer appointed to investigate the matter, which was published in a Press Release issued on 16th May 2022, and the documents attached to the Hon. Member’s post, will show that this allegation is false, and without basis.”

The Ministry emphasized its commitment to transparency and the dissemination of accurate information. It assured both the public and the diplomatic community that Ghana adheres to international standards in its dealings with foreign missions and embassies.

The Ministry also stressed that any grievances or claims by foreign embassies are addressed through appropriate legal and diplomatic channels, ensuring that misinformation does not mislead the public.

  • Timber Utilisation Contracts ratified by Parliament to facilitate trade

Timber Utilisation Contracts ratified by Parliament to facilitate trade

Parliament on Thursday ratified eleven Timber Utilisation Contracts (TUCs), marking a pivotal step towards facilitating timber exploitation and trade in Ghana.

These TUCs, out of the initial nineteen submitted for ratification as mandated by the Constitution, enable Ghana to issue Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Licences. These licences are crucial for exporting timber and timber products to the European market.

Ghana’s ratification of these contracts positions it as the first African country, and the second globally after Indonesia, to issue FLEGT Licences for timber products. This achievement underscores Ghana’s commitment to sustainable forest management and compliance with international trade standards.

The decision to ratify these TUCs follows the Cabinet’s approval on March 31, 2022, during its 26th meeting, to convert 156 timber concessions and permits into TUCs under Section 19 of Act 547. This legislative framework, effective since March 18, 1998, mandates that timber harvesting must be conducted under a valid TUC, replacing previous forms of timber rights under the Concessions Act of 1962 (Act 124).

“The conversion of these concessions and permits into TUCs represents a significant policy reform aimed at establishing a competitive and transparent system for allocating Ghana’s timber resources,” stated a government official familiar with the matter.

Section 19 of Act 547 stipulates that holders of existing timber rights before the Act’s implementation were required to apply for TUCs within six months. Despite the lengthy process spanning nearly 25 years, these conversions are now legally ratified by Parliament, aligning with European Union requirements and enhancing Ghana’s legal timber trade.

“This Parliamentary ratification marks the culmination of efforts to formalise timber rights in Ghana, signifying a pivotal moment in our sustainable forest management strategy,” affirmed a government spokesperson.

The ratification of these TUCs not only positions Ghana to meet its commitments under the Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) with the EU but also strengthens efforts to combat deforestation and forest degradation.

These initiatives are integral to improving environmental governance and contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

    Military Secretary ‘sinks’ Jakpa deep

The Chief of Defense Staff, Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, and the Military Secretary, Air Commodore Nana Adu Gyamfi, testified today in the ongoing ambulance trial involving Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Richard Jakpa.

The testimony addressed documents submitted by the prosecution, which allege that Richard Jakpa was dismissed from the military in 2007 due to unsatisfactory performance and failure to pass promotional exams.

Jakpa’s lawyers believe these documents aim to undermine his credibility as he testified in defense of Dr. Forson in the criminal trial.

During the session before the Financial Division of the High Court in Accra, Air Commodore Adu Gyamfi testified that Jakpa’s release letter was prepared after numerous reports, discussions, and interviews with him.

Thaddeus Sory, Jakpa’s lawyer, had subpoenaed the Military Secretary and requested specific documents but did not question the witness about these documents or ask him to tender them. Instead, Sory asked if the witness had released Jakpa’s letter to the Attorney-General, which the witness denied.

Dr. Aziz Bamba, counsel for Ato Forson, had no questions for the witness. However, during cross-examination by the Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, the Military Secretary confirmed that he had brought the subpoenaed documents to court.

The first document tendered and accepted as evidence was a Special Report on Richard Jakpa dated May 20, 2004, titled “SPECIAL REPORT ON LIEUTENANT RA JAKPA.” This report detailed Jakpa’s misconduct in the Ghana Armed Forces, describing his conduct as “unacceptable,” “indisciplined,” and “unprofessional.”

The report, prepared by Jakpa’s Commanding Officer, noted numerous incidents of misconduct, including failing to write examinations, not reporting to barracks after attending courses, and accruing debt to a Lebanese businessman during a mission in Lebanon. Additionally, the report highlighted Jakpa’s poor attendance during a one-month orientation course.

The Attorney-General questioned the Military Secretary about Jakpa’s indebtedness, distinguishing between a $400 debt in Lebanon and a $300 debt to a shop in Ghana. The latter was detailed in a statement of account tendered as evidence in court.

Attorney-General who is with the Prosecution questions the witnesses

The Military Secretary confirmed that the documents previously tendered by the prosecution regarding Jakpa’s military records were provided to the Attorney-General by the Minister for Defence.

He further clarified that Jakpa was not honorably released from the service, as an honorable release would be explicitly stated in the release letter, which was not the case for Jakpa.

The court has adjourned the case, and it will resume hearing on July 23, 2024.

Supreme Court throws out Ken Kuranchie’s suit challenging OSP’s constitutionality

The Supreme Court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Searchlight Newspaper, Kenneth Kwabena Agyei Kuranchie challenging the constitutionality of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

The 2024 independent parliamentary candidate sought to have the creation of the OSP and its powers declared unlawful. His lawsuit targeted the OSP’s powers of arrest, detention, freezing, and seizure, describing them as abusive.

Kuranchie’s writ requested the Supreme Court to declare the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (ACT 957) as contrary to multiple articles of the 1992 Constitution, including Articles 11, 17(1)(2) and (3), 88(3) and (4), 289(2), 290(1)(f), 290(2) to (4), 12(2), and 107(b).

He argued that the OSP’s prosecutorial powers should be placed under the direct control of the Attorney General, similar to the arrangement for the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), Police, and National Investigation Bureau (NIB).

The Special Prosecutor Act was established to create the OSP as a specialized agency to investigate specific cases of alleged or suspected corruption and corruption-related offenses involving public officers and politically exposed persons, as well as persons in the private sector involved in such offenses. The OSP prosecutes these offenses on the authority of the Attorney General.

This was not Kuranchie’s first legal challenge against the OSP; he had previously filed and later discontinued a similar case last year. His recent filing, however, met the same fate, with the Supreme Court dismissing it.

The Court emphasized that the OSP should not be distracted by such lawsuits and should instead focus on its mandate. The ruling reinforces the legitimacy and constitutional backing of the OSP, allowing it to continue its work in combating corruption and related offenses without hindrance.

Kuranchie’s legal attempts to alter the structure and authority of the OSP have thus far been unsuccessful, solidifying the current framework under which the OSP operates. The dismissal by the Supreme Court underscores the judiciary’s support for the OSP’s role in upholding accountability and integrity within Ghana’s public and private sectors.

He is a part of the Police Management Board (POMAB) headed by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

The Board is made up of Schedule Officers who assist the IGP in the day-to-day administration of the Ghana Police Service.

A major part of the success of Ghana’s democracy depends on you – Parliament to Police

The 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, has indicated that a major part of the success of Ghana’s democracy depends on the police force.

He made this known while praising the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, for his innovative and effective leadership of the Ghana Police Service at a ceremony to present the Democracy Cup to the IGP at the Police Headquarters on Tuesday, July 16, 2024.

Mr. Asiamah Amoako highlighted the crucial role played by the IGP and the current Police Management Board in maintaining the country’s stability and enhancing its democratic credentials.

He emphasized that the nation’s security and democratic progress are closely tied to the performance and leadership of the Ghana Police Service.

“We believe that a major part of the success of our democracy depends on the Ghana Police Service. We are here to present this democracy cup to you IGP as a symbolic gesture so that as the holder of the peace of this country, we can implore you to continue holding our peace together as you have always done with your administration since you took over.”

Mr. Asiamah Amoako lauded Dr. Dampare’s contributions, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the Police Service in safeguarding the country’s peace and democracy.

“We are grateful for your leadership. The transformation in the police service under you has been inspirational, and we are grateful,” he added.

In response, the IGP assured the parliamentary delegation that he and his team are motivated by the legislative chamber’s recognition of their efforts and will continue to fulfil their duties to protect and uphold the country’s democracy.

Dr. Dampare reiterated his commitment to maintaining peace and security, which he sees as fundamental to the flourishing of Ghana’s democratic institutions.

We are ensuring Ghanaians have a reason to vote for NPP – Miracles Aboagye

Spokesperson for the Bawumia campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has expressed optimism that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will prevail despite a victory prediction for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by Fitch Solutions.

Speaking on JoyNews Desk on Thursday, July 18, he emphasized that while the current state of the economy presents challenges, the NPP is committed to improving the economic conditions for Ghanaians.

Mr. Aboagye pointed out that inflation has dropped from around 54% to 23%, indicating economic progress.

He stressed that the NPP is actively campaigning and working to demonstrate its commitment to improving the country’s economic situation.

“As we speak, we are in the five northern regions campaigning. Until we get to the polls and ballot in December, we believe that we have a responsibility to ensure that the Ghanaian voter has a reason to vote for us. That is what we are doing,” he said.

Fitch Solutions‘ forecast indicates that 54 percent of respondents favor the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate John Mahama. Mike Kruiniger of Fitch Solutions highlighted that economic factors would significantly influence voter decisions.

Despite these predictions, Miracles Aboagye remains hopeful and dedicated to the NPP’s mission of proving their worth to the electorate.

Many MPs were not happy with L.I on siren use – Ablakwa

The North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has revealed that many lawmakers within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were unhappy with the proposed Legislative Instrument (L.I.) that sought to allow MPs and Ministers to use sirens and be exempted from speed limits.

Mr. Ablakwa highlighted that numerous NDC MPs were unaware of the specifics of the L.I. until it became public.

“When this matter became public on our platforms, many MPs said, what is this? We are seeing it for the first time. It was Franklin Cudjoe who put it up. There were protests. MPs were not happy. That is why our caucus leader had to issue a statement. Could you believe that even the leadership of our caucus didn’t know the content of this?” he stated during an interview on JoyFM’s SMS on July 18.

The revelation that the minority leadership was uninformed led to calls for the L.I.’s withdrawal.

Ablakwa explained, “He also issued a memo to leadership of all committees that, before any matter is finalized and laid on the floor, they should let him see it. I have received a copy of that memo. So look, I have said publicly that I don’t support this. I think it’s needless.”

Expressing his opposition to the L.I., Mr. Ablakwa argued for easing road congestion for all citizens rather than granting privileges to specific groups. “Why not ease the burden for everybody? Why do you want to take the ruling class out and I have seen that, from what has been put out in the media, they have added security operatives and all that. It is such a wide ambit. We don’t need that.”

He further emphasized, “This is so needless. It is a useless distraction. I am surprised that such a thing was brought to the house in the first place and contemplated.”

In response, Nana Akomea, Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC), accused the NDC of hypocrisy. He pointed out that the chairperson of the Subsidiary Legislation Committee is an NDC member, suggesting that the L.I. came from a minority-led committee.

“There is an attempt to put it on government. That it is government that is bringing an L.I. I could say to you that the subsidiary legislation is chaired by the NDC. So if anything goes through that committee, then whatever goes through there is inspired by the NDC.”

Deputy Transport Minister Hassan Tampuli expressed relief that the L.I. had been withdrawn, acknowledging that it originated from the committee and not the government.

“So these provisions were not from the government, it came from Parliament and nobody among the Subsidiary Legislation Committee can say, it isn’t from there and we are happy to be withdrawing this L.I.,” Tampuli noted.

LIVESTREAMING: Military testifies in ambulance case over Jakpa’s dismissal

The Chief of Defense Staff, Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, and the Military Secretary, Air Commodore Nana Adu Gyamfi, are set to testify today in the ongoing ambulance trial.

The testimony will address documents submitted by the prosecution, which allege that Richard Jakpa was dismissed from the military in 2007 due to unsatisfactory performance and failure to pass promotional exams.

These documents are seen by Jakpa’s lawyers as an attempt to undermine his credibility as he testified in defense of Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson in the criminal trial.

Air Commodore Nana Adu Gyamfi is currently in the witness box to present his statement on behalf of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

Cylinder Recirculation Model is the safest way of distributing LPG to homes – NPA to stakeholders

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has called on stakeholders in the petroleum downstream sector, particularly the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Marketers Association, to reconsider their stance against the newly introduced Cylinder Recirculation Model.

Chief Executive of the NPA, Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, made this appeal during his speech at the Ghana International Petroleum Conference (GhIPCON) in Accra.

He highlighted that many West African countries, including Togo, Burkina Faso, and Benin, have already adopted the model, deeming it the best distribution policy for domestic LPG use.

“I urge you to reassess your opposition to the Cylinder Recirculation Model because we have to move with the modern times and Ghana cannot be left out. When you look around us, all the West African nations surrounding us are adopting the Cylinder Recirculation Model as the safest way of distributing LPG to homes. We, as a country, must move with the times,” Dr. Abdul-Hamid emphasized.

He argued that the model is not only effective but also has the potential to create numerous job opportunities, particularly for the youth, as opposed to the current filling station concept.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid pointed out the importance of exploring opportunities along the value chain in the distribution and circulation channels.

Under the Cylinder Recirculation Model, residents of Accra and other selected parts of the country will no longer need to own a cylinder to use LPG for domestic and commercial activities. Instead, filled LPG cylinders will be available at exchange points where customers can pay for the content and pick up filled cylinders after registering with their National Identity Card.

Despite the benefits, the policy has faced pushback from some stakeholders since its implementation began. Dr. Abdul-Hamid appealed for support to make the model a success, urging stakeholders to align with modern practices adopted by neighboring countries.

Herbert Krappa, Minister of State at the Ministry of Energy, acknowledged the concerns of the stakeholders and assured continued engagement to ensure that everyone’s input is considered in shaping the policy. “Government will continue to engage in order to get everyone on board. Input from dealers will help shape the policy better,” Krappa stated.

This year’s GHIPCON, themed “Petroleum Downstream: Building a Future for Growth, Efficiency, and Sustainability,” provided a platform for discussing the future of Ghana’s petroleum sector and the implementation of new policies like the Cylinder Recirculation Model.

  • NDC’s Ashie Moore accused of aggression, assault by constituency women organisers

NDC’s Ashie Moore accused of aggression, assault by constituency women organisers

Tensions are escalating within the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Greater Accra Region over allegations against the Regional Chairman, Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore.

Accusations of aggression and assault by Moore have prompted a group of constituency women organisers to petition the National Executive Council (NEC), demanding immediate action.

On Tuesday, July 16, 2024, over forty constituency women organisers submitted a petition to the NEC, accusing Moore of persistent chauvinistic and bigoted actions. The petitioners allege that Moore has displayed male aggression and threatened assault against several leading women in the party.

The petition details three instances of alleged sexist behavior, including verbal abuse and threats. “Apart from other alleged misconduct of the Regional Chairman since he took office, some of which have been reported in the media, he is repeatedly displaying tendencies of a misogynist,” the petition states.

One significant incident cited occurred during the 2022 National Congress of the Party, where Moore allegedly called the Deputy Regional Secretary, Madam Patricia Akuyea Addy, a prostitute and attempted to assault her.

This outburst reportedly happened after Addy questioned Moore’s attempt to usurp the powers of the Regional Secretary by seizing accreditation tags meant for party delegates. Despite calls for him to withdraw the disparaging words and apologize, Moore remained defiant and faced no repercussions.

Further incidents include an episode at the party headquarters, where Moore is accused of attempting to assault Madam Obuobia Darko Opoku, the Deputy National Communications Director of the party and a member of the NDC 2024 campaign.

The petitioners recount Moore’s maniacal behavior, calling her unprintable names and referring to her as an ‘ashawo.’

The most recent alleged abuse, which spurred the petition, involved Moore’s behavior towards the Regional Women Organizer, Madam Felicia Merkpoi Bortey.

On July 9, 2024, during a meeting of the Greater Accra Regional Executive Committee, Moore reportedly hurled insults at Bortey, threatening to beat her up and once again calling her an ‘ashawo.’

The petitioners emphasize the urgency of addressing Moore’s conduct, highlighting the strategic importance of the Greater Accra Region in the upcoming 2024 elections.

They stress that Moore’s behavior undermines the confidence and effectiveness of the women’s wing of the party, which is crucial for their electoral success.

“It is absolutely unacceptable for a Regional Chairman to wear this dishonourable badge of misogynism in a critical region like Greater Accra. Even though he may have a record as an ‘abuser of women,’ once he has assumed the role of Regional Chairman, his conduct must reflect the ethics of that noble office. Against this backdrop, we request that your outfit act swiftly to call the Regional Chairman to order,” the petition reads.

The women organisers also express concern about the broader implications of Moore’s behavior, urging the NEC to take decisive action to maintain the party’s democratic credentials and ensure a respectful and supportive environment for all members.

Next gov’t will have to begin another debt restructuring – CSJ

A finance expert and fellow of the finance pillar at the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ), Haruna Alhassan, has advised the future government of Ghana to initiate another round of debt restructuring starting in 2025.

This recommendation comes amid concerns that without strategic investment of borrowed funds, the nation will continue to face bankruptcy.

On July 1, 2022, President Nana Akufo-Addo instructed then-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to engage the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a debt-restructuring programme, effectively declaring the country bankrupt.

This move resulted in significant financial challenges for bondholders.

“We may come out [of the bankruptcy] temporarily because of debt restructuring, but overall, we will still have a debt burden that we will struggle to pay. Going into 2025 to 2028, if you look at the payment profile of the restructured bonds, we cannot run away from having a second round of debt restructuring and we must start that engagement right from 2025,” Alhassan asserted during his keynote address at the 13th edition of the Leadership Dialogue Series (LDS) organized by CSJ.

Themed “Ghana’s Economy from 2025 – 2028: The Hard Choices,” the LDS 13 discussions offered numerous proposals for the next government to help restore Ghana’s economic stability.

Alhassan emphasized that the next administration must avoid the criticized practice of “borrowing for consumption” and focus instead on productive investments to avoid perpetual bankruptcy.

Alhassan also warned of the tough road ahead for any incoming government tasked with addressing the current economic challenges, marked by unprecedented hardship.

“The road ahead will be tough. Tough, rough and bumpy,” he cautioned, advocating for leadership by an experienced individual from 2025 onward.

The domestic debt exchange programme has faced widespread criticism for its chaotic and insensitive implementation, particularly its impact on pension funds.

Studies indicate that the programme could reduce the wealth and income of individual households, both directly and indirectly, through retail holdings and shares in mutual and pension funds. To mitigate these issues, Alhassan stressed the importance of starting negotiations early in the next round of debt restructuring.

The Leadership Dialogue Series, CSJ’s flagship civic education platform, aims to foster mass political participation and patriotic values through engaging discussions with experts and national leaders. CSJ, a think tank with a left-of-centre leaning, advocates for greater social inclusion in the distribution of wealth, privileges, and opportunities in society.

Social media users worried about Dampare over appointment of Deputy IGP by Akufo-Addo

Recent changes within the Ghana Police Service have ignited widespread speculation on social media.

Many users suggest that President Akufo-Addo’s decision to appoint Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Deputy Inspector-General of Police (IGP) in charge of Operations is part of a strategic move to oust the current IGP, Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare.

Social media commentators have expressed concerns that the appointment may be politically motivated, especially with the 2024 elections approaching.

Other users echoed these sentiments, speculating that the creation of the Deputy IGP position is a strategic maneuver.

In response to these speculations, the presidency released an official statement on July 17, 2024, clarifying that COP Yohuno’s appointment was based on recommendations from the Police Council.

The statement read, “The President has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, acknowledging his exceptional credentials and dedication to duty.”

COP Yohuno brings over thirty years of distinguished service in law enforcement to his new role. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Director-General in charge of Administration within the Ghana Police Service.

His extensive experience and dedication to duty were highlighted as key factors in his selection for this critical position.

GRNMA pushes for degree-level training for nurses and midwives

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has put forward a bold proposal to overhaul nursing education in Ghana by advocating for the cancellation of certificate and diploma programs.

Instead, they propose elevating all nursing education to the degree level, aiming to enhance the quality and professionalism of the nursing workforce.

General Secretary of the GRNMA, Dr. David Tenkorang Twum, revealed this proposal during an interview on Joy News’ PM Express, labeling the current system as “bizarre.”

He emphasized the complexity of having multiple entry levels into the nursing and midwifery profession, particularly noting the dominance of auxiliary nurses who constitute nearly 60% of the current workforce.

“We think that the majority must be degree-prepared,” Dr. Twum asserted.

Comparing Ghana to Nigeria, where registered nurses and midwives are required to hold a first degree, Dr. Twum argued that Ghana possesses the necessary human resources and educational infrastructure to implement similar standards.

“We have the human resources and the schools so we can do that,” he affirmed, advocating for a comprehensive transition to degree-level training for all nurses and midwives.

Addressing concerns about current certificate and diploma holders, Dr. Twum assured that existing nurses would have opportunities to upgrade their qualifications. “If we cancel the training of diploma and certificate [programs], we can upgrade the knowledge of those who are here,” he explained, highlighting existing courses available for skill enhancement.

The GRNMA’s proposal, if implemented, aims to raise the standard of nursing education in Ghana significantly. By preparing all nurses at the baccalaureate level, they believe it will lead to improved maternal health outcomes and overall healthcare delivery.

This move by the GRNMA marks a significant step towards professionalizing the nursing sector in Ghana and ensuring a more competent healthcare workforce for the future.

  • More hardship as transport fares go up by 15%

More hardship as transport fares go up by 15%

Ghanaians will soon face increased transportation costs as the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has announced a 15% hike in transport fares effective Monday, July 22.

This decision, according to the association, is a response to the soaring costs of fuel and essential vehicle maintenance items, which have significantly burdened the transport sector.

David Agboado, the Public Relations Officer of the association, explained the rationale behind the fare hike in an interview with Citi FM on Wednesday, July 17. He cited the sharp rise in fuel prices, with some oil marketing companies now selling fuel at prices exceeding GH₵15 per litre. This escalation in fuel costs has compelled drivers to increase fares to cover their operational expenses adequately.

“We will be increasing transport fares by 15% from Monday. The reason is that fuel prices have gone high. All that we use in servicing our vehicles has also gone high. That necessitated the 15% increment,” Mr. Agboado stated, underscoring the financial strain faced by drivers.

In addition to fuel costs, the rising prices of spare parts essential for vehicle maintenance have further pressured drivers. Mr. Agboado emphasized that absorbing these escalating costs is unsustainable for drivers, jeopardizing the viability of their operations and livelihoods.

“The fare increase is justified given the current economic pressures,” he added, highlighting the necessity of the decision to ensure the sustainability of the transport sector amid economic challenges.

Importantly, Mr. Agboado clarified that the Transport Ministry was not consulted regarding this fare adjustment, asserting the association’s autonomy in setting fare rates. “Transport Ministry is not aware, and we don’t need to sit with Transport Ministry before we increase our transport fares. We keep saying this,” he emphasized.

This announcement coincides with recent price hikes by several oil marketing companies at the beginning of July’s second pricing window.

Shell, among others, has raised the price of petrol to GH₵15.10 per litre and diesel to GH₵15.25 per litre, setting a trend likely to be followed by other OMCs, further exacerbating fuel costs for drivers and commuters alike.

NDC will win 2024 elections with 54% of total votes cast – Fitch Solutions

Fitch Solutions, a renowned research and data firm based in London, has forecasted that Ghana’s opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is poised to win the upcoming general elections scheduled for December 7.

According to the firm’s latest survey findings, 54% of respondents favor the NDC’s candidate, John Mahama, over the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mike Kruiniger, Associate Director of Country Risk at Fitch Solutions, highlighted economic factors as pivotal in shaping voter preferences.

He emphasized that issues such as economic management and job creation will heavily influence voters’ decisions during the elections, potentially placing the ruling NPP at a disadvantage due to recent economic challenges.

“We believe that the opposition NDC has a stronger chance of winning the upcoming general elections compared to the ruling NPP. Recent polls consistently place the NDC ahead with the most recent survey showing 54% of respondents favoring the NDC,” stated Mr. Kruiniger during the Mid-Year Review for Sub Saharan Africa.

Regarding the potential policy direction under an NDC government, Mr. Kruiniger indicated continuity with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme initiated during the current administration led by President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

“In terms of what a government change will mean for the economy, we think that policy direction under a likely NDC government will not largely change. The NDC will most likely stick to Ghana’s IMF programme, particularly as the party has shown commitment in the past to international agreements and obligations,” he explained.

Fitch Solutions’ assessment suggests that despite a potential change in government, Ghana’s economic policies are likely to remain stable, ensuring continuity and consistency in economic management.

I never wanted running mate position; I can’t speak good English – Chairman Wontumi

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi has unequivocally stated that he never aspired to become the running mate for the party in the upcoming 2024 elections.

In an interview with Onua FM on July 15, 2024, Wontumi humorously pointed out his limitation with English proficiency, emphasizing that he would not pursue a position that could potentially make him a topic of discussion due to his language skills.

“I never wanted the running mate position. I can’t even speak better English to become a running mate. I have a limit to my English, so I won’t go and say anything for me to become a topic of discussion because of my English,” Wontumi explained candidly.

Despite dismissing any personal ambitions for the role, Wontumi expressed strong support for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, who has been selected as the NPP’s running mate.

He highlighted the importance of unity within the party and reaffirmed his endorsement of NAPO’s candidacy alongside Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the presidency.

“We are committed to ensuring their victory in the 2024 elections,” Wontumi affirmed, dispelling rumors of internal conflict within the NPP regarding NAPO’s selection.

He emphasized that his role included endorsing NAPO, contributing to the party’s unified front as they prepare for the electoral contest.

I was one of the people who endorsed Napo as Bawumia’s running mate – Wontumi

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has dispelled rumours of internal discord regarding the party’s running mate for the 2024 elections, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO.

Addressing speculation of rifts within the party, Wontumi clarified, “There are no internal conflicts. Bawumia was bold in selecting his running mate, NAPO, from the Ashanti region, and we have supported this decision wholeheartedly. We are not just supporting them; we are committed to ensuring their victory in the 2024 elections.”

He emphasized his role in the selection process, stating, “Wontumi was among the people who endorsed NAPO. Politics is a democracy, and I can confirm that I was one of the people who endorsed NAPO. So, between NAPO and me, the impression is what is giving the NDC a problem because they thought we would be divided.”

Further addressing his own aspirations, Wontumi humorously remarked, “No, me as Wontumi, I don’t want the running mate position. I can’t even speak better English to become a running mate. I have a limit to my English, so I won’t go and say anything for me to become a topic of discussion because of my English.”

Comparing NAPO to a football legend, Wontumi likened him to Ronaldo, emphasizing the misconceptions sometimes imposed on him.

“And I see NAPO as Ronaldo, of which some Ghanaians want to conclude and change his words. What he hasn’t said, they want to impose on him,” he added.

LGBTQ: UG’s new statutes to incorporate gender-neutral pronouns

The University of Ghana has taken a step towards gender inclusivity by revising its Statutes, according to the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Gordon Akanzuwine Awandare.

This announcement was made during the university’s launch of a new five-year strategic plan, which also included the unveiling of updated human resource and administrative procedures. The event took place on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at the Great Hall.

Prof. Awandare highlighted the significance of these changes, noting that the new statutes will incorporate gender-neutral pronouns, replacing the exclusive use of “he” or “she.”

“One of the significant changes is our shift towards a gender-inclusive stance. The language has been updated to reflect more inclusive terms, moving away from solely ‘he’ or ‘she’ references,” Prof. Awandare stated.

The revision of the statutes is part of a broader initiative to align the university’s regulations with contemporary and emerging national and institutional policies and processes.

Prof. Awandare emphasized that this update supports the Vice Chancellor’s vision of creating a vibrant and responsive governance and management system.

Prof. Gordon Akanzuwine Awandare, Pro-Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs

“The revision is in furtherance of the Vice Chancellor’s vision, which is to make the institute a vibrant and responsive governance and management system, and also to update and align the statutes with current and emerging national and university-level policies and operational processes,” he explained.

The previous statutes, established in 2014, already included provisions aimed at promoting gender inclusivity and fostering an environment free from gender-based discrimination and bias. The new revisions build on this foundation, underscoring the university’s ongoing commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of its culture.

Since 2020, the University of Ghana has confronted several distressing incidents targeting its LGBTQ community, reflecting broader societal and legislative challenges in Ghana.

One notable incident occurred in January 2024, when a gay man was brutally assaulted on the university’s Legon campus.

This attack began when women who had accommodated him discovered his sexual orientation, and he suffered further violence the following day from a refuse collector.

  • Transport fares to surge by 15% amid fuel price hikes

Transport fares to surge by 15% amid fuel price hikes

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has announced a 15% increase in transport fares, effective Monday, July 22.

This decision comes in response to the escalating cost of fuel and essential vehicle maintenance items, which have significantly impacted the transport sector.

Public Relations Officer of the association, David Agboado, explained in an interview with Citi FM on Wednesday, July 17, that the surge in fuel prices has left drivers with no choice but to raise fares.

He noted that some oil marketing companies are now selling fuel at prices exceeding GH₵15 per litre, placing additional financial strain on drivers.

“We will be increasing transport fares by Monday by 15%. The reason is that fuel prices have gone high. All that we use in servicing our vehicles has gone high. That necessitated the 15% increment,” Mr. Agboado stated.

The fare hike is also driven by the rising cost of spare parts, which are crucial for maintaining vehicles in good working condition. Mr. Agboado emphasized that drivers are unable to continue absorbing these increasing costs, which are eroding their earnings and threatening the sustainability of their operations.

“The fare increase is justified given the current economic pressures,” he added, highlighting that the decision was necessary to ensure the viability of the transport sector.

The association clarified that the Transport Ministry was not consulted regarding this fare adjustment. “Transport Ministry is not aware and we don’t need to sit with Transport Ministry before we increase our transport fares. We keep saying this,” Mr. Agboado asserted.

This announcement comes amid a series of price hikes by several oil marketing companies (OMCs) at the start of July’s second pricing window. Shell, a leading OMC, has increased the price of a litre of petrol from GH₵14.80 to GH₵15.10, and a litre of diesel from GH₵14.92 to GH₵15.25. Other OMCs are expected to follow suit, further driving up fuel costs.

So, hopefully by next week the ‘Alawa’ will drop.”
