Leaving home early won’t save MPs from traffic congestion – Dominic Ayine

The Bolgatanga East Member of Parliament, Dr Dominic Ayine, has defended the introduction of a new Legislative Instrument (L.I.) that seeks to amend parts of the Road Traffic Regulations 2012.

The proposed L.I., currently before Parliament, aims to grant Members of Parliament (MPs) and Ministers of State certain privileges previously reserved for emergency and specialized vehicles.

The amendment to Regulation 74 of L.I. 2180 will allow the installation of sirens or bells as warning devices on vehicles owned by Supreme Court justices, MPs, and Ministers of State.

This legislative change is intended to facilitate the movement of these officials, who often face demanding schedules requiring travel to multiple locations for meetings and official duties.

The proposed amendment has sparked debate among various stakeholders, with some advocating for its potential benefits in improving governmental efficiency, while others raise concerns about the broader implications of extending such privileges to elected officials.

Mounting to its defense, Dr Ayine noted that the assertion that MPs should set off home early to address their administrative businesses does not hold.

In an interview on GTV, he noted that there are emergencies that are unforeseen which cannot be catered for by leaving home early.

He believes that the only way out of this would be to use the siren in order to deal with any traffic congestion they might encounter.

Gov’t to spend GHC400k to renovate Bekwai Central Destitute Infirmary

The government has committed GH¢400,000 to refurbish the Bekwai Central Destitute Infirmary in the Ashanti Region, as announced by the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Ms. Dakoa Newman.

The Minister made this announcement during her two-day working visit to the Ashanti Region, emphasizing the urgent need to upgrade the facility.

“The good part is that the government has provided an amount of money to ensure that renovations are done to upgrade the state of this destitute infirmary,” Ms. Newman stated during her inspection of the infirmary, which currently accommodates 41 inmates.

She highlighted the necessity of improving the infrastructure to enhance the comfort and safety of the elderly and persons with disabilities residing there.

“We identified some challenges that have to do with infrastructure, basic needs, as well as fencing the facility to protect our aged and destitute here, which we are going to work on,” the Minister assured.

She also mentioned that a technical team from the Department of Social Welfare would visit the infirmary to assess the situation and provide recommendations for the renovation.

Ms. Newman further assured that her Ministry would seek additional funding to construct a protective wall around the infirmary to safeguard the inmates and the facility’s grounds.

Earlier in her visit, the Minister monitored the disbursement of benefits under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program at Atonsu and Sabin Akrofuom.

Currently, over 25,000 households in the Ashanti Region benefit from the LEAP program, which has seen a 100 percent increase in beneficiaries within a year.

Ms. Newman observed the payment process and interacted with beneficiaries at both centers, ensuring they received the correct amounts. She expressed satisfaction with the process and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the aged and vulnerable in society.

“The monitoring is largely successful, and we are happy to know that the people appreciate the 100 percent increase which is making a big difference in their lives,” she noted.

She reiterated the government’s dedication to sustaining programs like LEAP to positively impact the lives of vulnerable Ghanaians.

“The government is committed to continue to ensure that these programs are sustained to impact the lives of the vulnerable in Ghana,” she stated.

Rev. Dr. Mrs. Comfort Asare, Acting Director of the Department of Social Welfare, stressed the need for increased funding to better cater to the infirmary’s inmates and highlighted the importance of upgrading the facility. She also called for the recruitment of more caregivers to improve the quality of care provided.

2 including Chinese arrested at Paga Border for unlawful possession of arms, gold, cash

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has successfully intercepted a shipment of arms at the Paga Border Post, resulting in the arrest of a Chinese national and his Ghanaian accomplice.

The two were in a Burkina Faso registered Toyota Rav4 car numbered 0919G203. On reaching the Ghana side of the border, they attempted to evade Immigration control by speeding off.

Inspector Ebenezer Badu and AICO Charles Taali who were on duty gave them a hot chase which led to the interception and arrest of Mr Zhou Quan, the Chinese; and Mr Awato Kwame, his Ghanaian accomplice.

A search conducted on the vehicle revealed two Chinese pump action guns (Golden Eagle), eleven packs of body amour bags, two jack knives, fifteen electronic gold scales, three phones, one pack of suspected gold ore, GHC147,160.00, CFA51,000.00 and USD330.00.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on July 15, the GIS praised the vigilance and dedication of its officers at the Paga Border Post. Their attentiveness was pivotal in ensuring the successful interception and the subsequent arrests.

“The vigilance of our Immigration Officers at the Paga Border Post has led to the interception and arrest of a Chinese national and his Ghanaian accomplice,” the GIS stated in the post.

The GIS reiterated its commitment to constant surveillance and proactive measures to maintain national security.

The Service emphasized that such efforts are critical in preventing the influx of illegal arms and ensuring the safety and security of the country.

This declaration was made during the 31st Congregation and Third Special Congregation of Valley View University (VVU) in Accra, where he was honored with an Honorary Doctorate Degree for his significant contributions to public service, justice, and national development.

In addition to President Akufo-Addo, the University conferred Honorary Doctorate Degrees on Mr. Thomas Svaniker, an automotive industry leader and business strategist, and Kwame Osei-Prempeh, a former Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice.

Both were recognized for their exemplary leadership and significant contributions to their respective fields, enhancing humanity’s cause.

The University’s citation for President Akufo-Addo highlighted his pivotal role in advocating for peace in sub-Saharan Africa, regional stability, media freedom, and significant legal and foreign policy reforms.

“Your illustrious career has been marked by an unwavering commitment to the rule of law, justice, and democracy,” the citation noted.

It also praised his Administration’s educational policies, particularly the flagship ‘Free Senior High School (SHS)’ Programme, which has expanded educational opportunities for many Ghanaian youth.

President Akufo-Addo, in his speech, noted the historic student enrolment of 503,000 for 2024 at the SHS level, the highest in the nation’s history.

Since its inception in 2017, the Free SHS Programme has benefited over four million children, with the Government investing over 12 billion Ghana Cedis. The President asserted that this programme has been crucial in training the human resources necessary for Ghana’s future development.

The Government’s focus also includes expanding technical and vocational training, as well as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.

  • I’ve built more roads than Mahama and Mills combined – Akufo-Addo

I’ve built more roads than Mahama and Mills combined – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has declared that his government has constructed more roads than the combined efforts of the Mills/Mahama administration.

The announcement was made during the sod-cutting ceremony for the dualisation of the Anwiankwanta-Ahenema Kokoben Road on July 15, 2024.

Addressing a gathering of local officials, residents, and stakeholders, President Akufo-Addo detailed the extensive improvements made to the nation’s road network since 2017.

He cited a total of 12,830 kilometres of roads completed under his leadership. This figure starkly contrasts with the 4,636 kilometres of roads completed during the Mills/Mahama era from 2009 to 2016.

The President enumerated various types of roadworks undertaken by his administration, which include asphalt overlays, new constructions, graveling/re-graveling, reconstructions, partial reconstructions, rehabilitations, resealing, surfacing, and the construction of 35 crucial bridges. Additionally, six interchanges have been added, with 10 more currently in progress.

“This development is unparalleled in the history of Ghana, reflecting a level of commitment and efficiency in addressing our infrastructure needs that have not been seen before,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

He emphasised the positive impact these developments have on connectivity, economic activities, and the overall quality of life for Ghanaians.

Despite these significant achievements, President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the ongoing demand for more roads, attributing it to the substantial road deficit inherited by his administration. He urged future governments to continue the momentum and build upon the foundations laid by his administration.

“The progress made sets a high standard and serves as a blueprint for what can be achieved with dedication and strategic planning. Successive governments must ensure sustained investment in infrastructure to address the road deficit and meet the evolving needs of our rapidly growing population,” the President remarked.

In the Ashanti Region alone, 2,079 kilometres of roads have been completed, he said, including major upgrades and enhancements. President Akufo-Addo highlighted specific projects such as the construction of the Suame Interchange and the upgrading of local roads in Kumasi, which have significantly improved connectivity and transportation in the region.

The President detailed the various types of roadworks undertaken in the Ashanti Region, which include asphalt overlays, new constructions, graveling/re-graveling, reconstructions, rehabilitations, and the construction of two bridges at Susanso-Anloga and Kokoso-Bohyen.

A third bridge on the Nwabi River at Atafoa is substantially completed, further enhancing connectivity in the region.

Specific road projects completed in the Ashanti Region include the upgrading of 100 kilometres of local roads in Kumasi, the upgrading of the Lake Road into a dual carriageway from the Coca Cola Bottling Plant to Dompoase, and the upgrading of 56 kilometres of selected feeder roads in Nyinahin and surrounding areas. These projects have significantly improved transportation and connectivity for residents and businesses alike.

President Akufo-Addo also highlighted ongoing projects, such as the construction of the Suame Interchange, which is the first four-tier interchange in the Ashanti Region.

The project is progressing steadily, with the three overpasses on the Offinso Road at Anomagye, Magazine Road, and Abusuakuruwa already forty percent complete. Works on the main interchange have also started with the relocation of utilities around the area, and the project is expected to be completed in 2025.

In his concluding remarks, President Akufo-Addo stressed the importance of continued investment in road infrastructure to address the country’s road deficit and meet the population’s evolving needs. He urged future governments to maintain the momentum and build on the foundations laid by his administration.

“The progress made sets a high standard and serves as a blueprint for what can be achieved with dedication and strategic planning. Successive governments must ensure sustained investment in infrastructure to address the road deficit and meet the evolving needs of our rapidly growing population,” the President remarked.

As the ceremony concluded, President Akufo-Addo expressed his gratitude to the people of the Ashanti Region for their support and patience.

He assured them of the government’s unwavering commitment to delivering on its promises and improving the region’s infrastructure.

  • MPs and Ministers have deadlines to meet, we can’t be stuck in traffic – Appiah-Kubi

MPs and Ministers have deadlines to meet, we can’t be stuck in traffic – Appiah-Kubi

Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has voiced strong support for a new Legislative Instrument (L.I.) that seeks to amend parts of the Road Traffic Regulations 2012.

Mr. Appiah-Kubi justified the amendment by highlighting the demanding nature of MPs’ and ministers’ work, which often involves numerous meetings and project planning sessions held in various locations. He emphasized that prolonged time spent in traffic negatively impacts the performance of these officials, potentially leading to delays in critical development projects.

“I know the schedule of work that ministers go through and how they postpone meetings outside ministries trying to finish their regular job in office and be confronted with limited time to reach the next destination for the next official duty. You subject such people to the conditions of traffic on the road. Such people cannot meet the deadline and therefore it is imperative for us to give some access to them to be able to meet the deadline,” he said in an interview on JoyNews.

He further argued that the current traffic conditions contribute to underperformance among some ministers, who are unable to navigate the congested roads swiftly. By granting MPs and ministers the ability to use sirens and bells, the proposed L.I. aims to alleviate the stress of traffic and enhance their capacity to attend meetings and perform their duties effectively.

Mr. Appiah-Kubi also recalled several instances where legislators and judges were arrested for speeding while attempting to reach their offices on time.

He noted that these situations underscore the need for the amendment, which would provide a practical solution to the challenges faced by high-ranking officials in performing their duties.

The Asante Akyem North MP concluded by stressing that the amendment would not only improve the efficiency of MPs and ministers but also hold them accountable for delivering on their mandates. “Eliminating such restrictive laws will enable us to hold these individuals accountable if they fail to deliver on their responsibilities,” he added.

The proposed amendment has sparked debate among various stakeholders, with some advocating for its potential benefits in improving governmental efficiency, while others raise concerns about the broader implications of extending such privileges to elected officials.

Video: Banku preparation, meat frying, Asokwa NDC PC’s door-to-door campaign

Amoh Kamel, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary candidate for Asokwa, has taken an unconventional approach to his campaign by personally engaging constituents in a door-to-door initiative that includes practical assistance with daily tasks.

In a recent video circulating on social media, Kamel can be seen actively participating in the daily lives of Asokwa residents.

His activities ranged from frying meat, preparing banku, to even assisting in unbraiding hair for community members.

This hands-on approach is aimed at fostering direct connections with voters ahead of the upcoming national elections.

Such personalized interactions are not uncommon in Ghanaian politics, especially during election seasons, where candidates often seek to demonstrate empathy and understanding of local issues through direct engagement.

Kamel’s campaign strategy mirrors similar efforts seen earlier this year when Mike Oquaye Jnr., the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Dome-Kwabenya, gained attention for washing clothes for constituents.

These gestures underscore the lengths to which politicians may go to establish rapport and garner support from their communities.

List of 12 assets Okudzeto ’stopped’ govt from selling

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has disclosed a list of assets that he claims to have prevented the Akufo-Addo-led government from selling, citing concerns over state capture.

Among the notable instances cited by Mr. Ablakwa is his recent intervention in preventing the sale of a 60% stake in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel, a private firm linked to Ghana’s Food and Agriculture Minister, Bryan Acheampong.

The sale was halted following strong objections from Organised Labour after Mr. Ablakwa raised alarms about the transaction involving a public service officer.

In addition to the hotel stake, Mr. Ablakwa highlighted several other assets he claims to have safeguarded from sale or questionable dealings:

    1. Land belonging to the Nigerian High Commission, which he alleges was targeted for a midnight demolition operation by unidentified actors.
    2. Land owned by the Bulgarian Embassy, allegedly subject to clandestine demolition efforts by high-ranking political appointees under the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration.
    3. Parks and Gardens Land in Cantonments and Wa.
    4. Airport Lands implicated in the Heaven Scandal.
    5. Successful prevention of attempts to demolish the Accra International Conference Centre.
    6. Preservation efforts concerning prominent hotels such as Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Royal Resort, Elmina Beach Hotel, Ridge Royal Hotel, Busua Beach Hotel, and Trust Lodge.

    8. La Palm Royal Resort
    9. Elmina Beach Hotel
    10. Ridge Royal Hotel
    11. Busua Beach Hotel
    12. Trust Lodge.

Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that these actions are just the beginning of his efforts to combat what he perceives as state capture, urging continued vigilance and activism in reclaiming public assets for the benefit of all Ghanaians.

“This is just the beginning — may these modest gains inspire us not to give up until we have reclaimed the rest,” Mr. Ablakwa stated, underscoring his commitment to combating alleged instances of state capture in Ghana.

The disclosures by Mr. Ablakwa have ignited public debate and scrutiny over governance and transparency in asset management within the Akufo-Addo administration.

Mr. Ablakwa continues to advocate for greater oversight and integrity in government dealings.

8 arrested for removing NPP billboard in Agona East

The Agona Swedru Police Command has reportedly apprehended 8 individuals for the removal of a billboard belonging to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Agona East Constituency, Hannah Asamoah, and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, at Mankrong Nkwanta.

According to sources, the removal of the billboard was carried out under the supervision of local chiefs and elders from the community.

A video circulating on social media captured moments of the removal, where a male voice could be heard commenting on the location of the billboard.

“There is a big compound here but they decided to fix it here. So they are removing it,” the voice stated in the video.

  • I won’t be part of a Mahama gov’t that steals state assets – Ablakwa declares

I won’t be part of a Mahama gov’t that steals state assets – Ablakwa declares

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has firmly stated his stance against any future government under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that engages in state capture.

Speaking on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, on Monday, July 15, 2024, Ablakwa emphasized that he would resign from any administration that indulges in practices detrimental to the nation’s assets.

The outspoken lawmaker highlighted his commitment to integrity and accountability in public office, asserting, “I will not just speak, but I will resign from the government. I won’t be part of it. That we come to power and these things that we are condemning, we come and do the same things, I won’t be part of such a government. I’ll just be in Parliament and I’ll be paid for it.”

Ablakwa further underscored that his livelihood does not depend on holding a ministerial position, stating there are numerous avenues outside government where he can thrive.

His comments come amidst recent controversies surrounding attempts to sell a 60% stake of SSNIT in four hotels, which he has actively opposed.

“I don’t have to be a Minister before I can eat. There are so many things I can do. There are so many people who are not in government who are doing well,” Ablakwa added.

Echoing sentiments expressed by NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, Ablakwa welcomed Mahama’s commitment to prevent his appointees from acquiring state assets.

He cited Mahama’s recent pledge during a media engagement where he vowed that no member of his administration would engage in such practices.

“I was happy when former President Mahama clearly said at his press conference that he won’t allow any member of his government to buy state assets,” Ablakwa affirmed. He expressed optimism that the proposed Protection of Public Assets Bill, aimed at prohibiting public officials from acquiring state properties, would be enacted before the commencement of any future NDC government.

Mahama, addressing concerns of political ethics and transparency, reiterated his commitment to ethical governance practices during his media engagement. He emphasized that under his leadership, all appointees would adhere strictly to a code of conduct prohibiting the purchase of state assets.

“We will cut out waste, we will eliminate opulence, and we will introduce a code of conduct for public appointees, especially political appointees, regarding how they behave in terms of their modesty and humility,” Mahama stated.

In response to ongoing concerns about political ethics and transparency, Mr Ablakwa has announced plans to lead a team of lawyers in drafting a private member’s bill addressing the issue of politicians buying and selling state assets.

He emphasized the need to curb practices that have persisted across administrations, including under the current Akufo-Addo regime.

  • Nkrumah, Mahama beat Napo’s Akufo-Addo in poll to determine Ghana’s best president

Nkrumah, Mahama beat Napo’s Akufo-Addo in poll to determine Ghana’s best president

In a recent poll conducted by GhanaWeb, Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has emerged as the most popular president in the country’s history.

The poll, conducted from Thursday, July 11, 2024, to Sunday, July 14, 2024, drew participation from approximately 17,000 readers of GhanaWeb.

The poll was prompted by remarks made by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (popularly known as NAPO), the vice-presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who asserted that the current President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has outperformed all past presidents, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Out of the respondents, over 60%—representing more than 10,000 participants—voted Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as the best president in Ghana’s history.

His legacy as the country’s founding father and his role in leading Ghana to independence clearly resonated with the majority of voters.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the current flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured the second position in the poll with over 14% of respondents (2,421 participants) recognizing him as the second best president.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who NAPO suggested had surpassed Nkrumah in achievements, placed third in the poll with 1,964 participants, amounting to nearly 12% of respondents endorsing him as the third best president.

Former presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Jerry John Rawlings followed in the fourth and fifth positions respectively, with Kufuor garnering over 8% of the vote and Rawlings receiving nearly 3%.

The late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, who served as president from 2009 until his untimely death in 2012, ranked sixth in the poll with nearly 2% of respondents affirming his legacy.

Dr. Hilla Limann, who served briefly as president from 1979 to 1981, rounded out the poll in seventh place, receiving less than 1% of the votes.

The results underscore a strong sentiment among participants for Nkrumah’s pivotal role in Ghana’s history, despite differing views expressed by some political figures regarding contemporary achievements.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs of the Nzema Traditional Area have called on Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh to make his way to Nzema and apologise for the comparison between the late Nkrumah and Akufo-Addo after his recent apology communicated in a statement.

  • We will engage Organised Labour on hotels sale – SSNIT Boss

We will engage Organised Labour on hotels sale – SSNIT Boss

Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo, has assured Organised Labour of continued engagement following the recent decision to terminate the sale of six hotels.

This decision comes after Organised Labour’s threat of a nationwide strike if the sale proceeded.

On Friday, July 12, 2024, Organised Labour issued an ultimatum demanding the termination of the hotel sale, which led to the Board Chairman of SSNIT, Elizabeth Ohene, announcing the abrogation of the decision.

Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM on Monday, July 15, 2024, Mr. Osafo-Maafo explained that the termination was necessary to prevent the strike and ensure constructive dialogue with Organised Labour.

“My message to Organised Labour is that the management and board of the Trust will continue to work very hard to manage the assets that we are responsible for very prudently. We are listening and we will continue to engage. That is the main point,” he stated.

Mr. Osafo-Maafo emphasized SSNIT’s commitment to managing its assets and risks prudently to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Trust.

He noted that the decision to terminate the sale followed significant objections from stakeholders, including unfavourable payment terms proposed by Rock City Hotel, one of the prospective buyers.

“We listened to the objections from the stakeholders and decided to terminate the process. If you remember, when we had the press conference, we said we would engage all the stakeholders, and we have been doing that since then. The unions have also been vociferous, and we listened to their demands and decided to terminate the process,” he added.

Mr. Osafo-Maafo also highlighted that the SSNIT management and board had concerns about the payment terms proposed by Rock City Limited, which contributed to the decision to halt the sale.

“We went into a negotiation process; it was the management and board of SSNIT that rejected the terms of payment… The terms of payment were the subject of the negotiation, and therefore we sought to continue the negotiation to reach a solution that was acceptable,” he explained.

He further clarified that the process of divesting SSNIT’s shares in the hotels began as far back as 2010, under previous boards and managements, not his tenure.

“We don’t think that we left it too late; there were businesses that we have had since 2010. This process started as far back as 2010, when the board invited investors, and then in 2017, and then in 2018 the board directed that we go in to find strategic investors, and the process traveled through to 2022,” he stated.

In a related development, Organised Labour has suspended its strike action following the termination of the hotel sale.

This decision was announced at a news conference by the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr. Yaw Baah, after an emergency meeting on Monday, July 15.

The Ghana Medical Association confirmed the suspension in a statement, directing its members to return to post immediately.

With the strike action called off, it is expected that normalcy will return to affected sectors, including healthcare and other public services.

Speaker Bagbin reiterated the need for Ghana to utilize its traditional culture as a tool for international promotion, underscoring the country’s significant cultural wealth and its potential to attract global attention.

Gideon Boako goes hard on Ohene Ntow for remarks against Bawumia’s father

Spokesperson for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Gideon Boako, has sharply criticized Nana Ohene Ntow, former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and current adviser to Mr. Alan Kyerematen, for his derogatory remarks about Bawumia’s late father.

The controversy arose after Mr. Ohene Ntow referred to Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia as a gossip during a public discussion on Peace FM’s morning show on Monday, July 15.

During the broadcast, Ohene Ntow’s comments sparked widespread backlash. Dr. Boako, who was also present on the program, condemned the remarks as disrespectful and baseless.

He emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s father was a respected statesman who made significant contributions to Ghana’s political landscape.

Gideon Boako stressed that such disparaging comments about a deceased elder statesman are not only inappropriate but also unbecoming of a senior party member.

He argued that Ohene Ntow’s statements do not reflect the values and principles of the NPP, a party that prides itself on respect for individuals and their contributions to national development.

Dr. Boako urged Mr. Ohene Ntow to desist from making personal attacks and instead focus on constructive discussions that will advance the country’s democratic agenda.

He emphasized the importance of upholding the dignity and legacy of past leaders who have sacrificed for the progress of the nation.

“Where is the evidence? It’s just hearsay, and with your experience in politics, I don’t expect you to be saying something like this. You’re peddling falsehoods about the vice president’s father, and it is totally unnecessary and uncalled for. I urge you to stop making them,” Dr. Boako stated.

“Until you have any evidence, you shouldn’t be making these comments. This is the job of amateurs in politics, not someone as experienced as you are,” he added.

Ghanaian judges run to court as private developers demolish their homes

Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has made further revelations after indicating that Ghanaian courts are currently embroiled in legal disputes over land that they possess.

In an interview on TV3’s The KeyPoints show, he made new information available, which reveals that 13 bungalows belonging to judges located opposite the American Embassy are no longer in sight.

“When the private developers told them that they are the new owners started demolishing, judges run to their fellow judges for an injunction. Hey, we have nowhere else to stay, save us. I have the court documents here,” he said.

The case is Judicial Service of Ghana (plaintiff) against Lands Commission, Frames Oil Company Limited and Attorney General.

“Unprecedented. Judges running to judges to save them,” he exclaimed in a sentiment expressing disbelief.

In an interview on Metro TV, the indicated that the Minister of Local Government and Decentralisation, Martin Kwaku Adjei-Mensah Korsah has become helpless due to government’s actions.

“So when we talk about the state capture, judges have to run to their colleague judges to save them. You wonder what is happening is there no adult in the room. Look at the Local Minister, he is helpless, he wants to protect the land. Look at this Cantoments land, government took one out of two containers. The local has to run to goverment. Now the court is in court with the government. What is going on in this country?,” he added.

In recent weeks, the MP has leveled accusations against government officials, alleging state capture.

Ablakwa specifically cited additional instances of government selling state properties, purportedly including assets belonging to the Ghana Prisons Service and the Department of Parks and Gardens.

Meanwhile, the MP has affirmed his unwavering commitment to combating state capture and government corruption, asserting that no amount of intimidation would deter him.

Organised labour calls off strike; issues SSNIT 1-month ultimatum to fix concerns

Organised Labour has announced the suspension of its strike, which began today, Monday, July 15, in protest against the Social Security and National Insurance Trust’s (SSNIT) plan to sell a 60% stake in four hotels to Rock City Hotel, a private firm owned by Ghana’s Food and Agriculture Minister, Bryan Acheampong.

The decision to call off the strike was revealed at a press conference by the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr. Yaw Baah, following an emergency meeting held on Monday.

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) also confirmed the suspension in a statement issued the same day.

The statement, signed by GMA President Dr. Frank Serebour and General Secretary Dr. Richard Selormey, declared, “NEC, in light of this decision, suspends with immediate effect the earlier issued roadmap for industrial action and directs that all members return to post. NEC is grateful to members for your support.”

Before the suspension, the strike had already impacted various sectors, with many workers abandoning their posts. In Accra, some courts were inactive, and numerous state agencies experienced significant absenteeism.

The strike also disrupted services at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where Outpatient Department Services were suspended, leaving many patients stranded.

With the suspension of the strike, it is expected that normal operations will resume promptly. The move follows intense discussions and pressure from organised labour groups, who had initially declared the indefinite strike action in response to SSNIT’s controversial deal.

Language should not be a barrier, but a bridge – Bagbin to National Boundary Commissions of West Africa

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. S.K. Bagbin, has called for urgent and collective action to eliminate language barriers that have impeded socioeconomic growth within the West African sub-region.

He noted that while linguistic diversity in West Africa is culturally enriching, it often poses significant challenges to effective communication and collaboration among member states.

“Language should be a bridge, not a barrier,” he emphasized.

Speaker Bagbin made this appeal during a courtesy call by the Heads of the National Boundary Commissions of West Africa, led by Major General Emmanuel Kotia, Commissioner General of the Ghana Boundary Commission, in Parliament on Thursday, July 11, 2024.

The visit was part of the group’s inaugural meeting in Accra, aimed at establishing mechanisms for better implementation of border governance strategies within the ECOWAS Region.

The Speaker also addressed the issue of the unfair presentation of Africa’s size and its various countries. He pointed out that some African countries are larger than Europe and that addressing these misconceptions could enhance the continent’s global projection.

Speaker Bagbin found the meeting of the Heads of National Boundary Commissions of West Africa significant in tackling these challenges and called for broader collaboration and partnership.

He assured the Commission of Parliament’s support, particularly in the area of legislation, to ensure the success of their efforts.

GHC15,000 is enough to have a traditional wedding – Wode Maya

Kobina Ackon known widely by the brand name, Wode Maya, who is a Ghanaian freelance Vlogger/YouTuber, has noted that one will require about GHC15,000 to hold a traditional marriage ceremony.

According to him, this amount will not be able to cater for a white weeding.

“You don’t need the white wedding so 15,000 cedis is enough,” he wrote in a post on X.

He was reacting to a flier by TV3 that indicated that it will cost you GHC44,712.50 to have a standard wedding in Ghana (both White and Traditional ceremonies).

The 3News Research Desk concluded this after costing the average 2021 marriage list of various tribes.

Wode Maya didn’t reveal why such an amount would suffice. Things needed to be catered for during a traditional marriage ceremony include paying of bride price, akonta sekan (money for the brother-in-law), among others.

Trotro mate becomes 17th person found dead in Wa, throat slit

The body of a male bus conductor has been retrieved by police in Wa, marking the latest grim discovery in what has become known as the ‘Wa Killings.’

The victim, identified as Richard Opoku, was found with his throat slit behind a trailer in the early hours of Monday, July 15. This brings the total number of unexplained killings in Wa to 17 within a relatively short period.

According to sources from JoyNews, Opoku had accompanied a trailer transporting salt to Wa with plans to unload the cargo upon arrival.

However, upon reaching Wa, the deceased and the driver were unable to offload the salt and drove to the residence of the salt owner. Opoku was invited to spend the night in a room at the owner’s house but chose to rest on the veranda before retiring to bed.

The following morning, traces of blood were discovered on the veranda, leading to the gruesome find of Opoku’s body behind the house. In response, police have initiated investigations and arrested the salt owner and the trailer driver for further questioning.

The Member of Parliament for Wa Central, Rashid Pelpuo, has called on security services to intensify efforts to locate and apprehend those responsible for these mysterious killings.

He expressed concern over the increasing lawlessness and the promotion of illegal activities, such as secret societies advertising wealth through dubious means on radio.

Pelpuo criticized the police for not investigating these illegal organizations, stating, “When the people go out to take the laws into their own hands, you can’t control them. It’s painful that you see these things happening but you don’t see the people. You can imagine people sitting on radio advertising that they have secret societies and they would be rich if they join.”

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Bole, Yusif Sulemana, has also intensified calls for action against the ongoing serial killings in his constituency.

He urged the Interior Minister, Henry Quartey, to implement measures to end the Wa killings, highlighting the self-imposed curfew that has gripped the community due to fear of potential attacks.

“Last night, for instance, Mr Speaker, I decided to take a walk in the Bole Township and by 8:30 pm, almost everyone was asleep, self-imposed curfew. We cannot continue in this manner,” he stated.

  • IEA prepares for 2024 presidential debate

IEA prepares for 2024 presidential debate

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has announced the organization of a debate among some of the political parties intending to contest in the upcoming 2024 elections.

This debate, according to the IEA, is essential for voters to critically assess both presidential and vice-presidential candidates, thereby enabling informed decision-making.

The call for debates comes amidst ongoing disagreements between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the necessity of holding such debates.

Professor Alexander Bilson Darku, a senior fellow at the IEA, emphasized the importance of these debates in an interview with Citi News. He revealed that preliminary engagements have already commenced with various political parties to ensure a debate is held before the December 7 elections.

“Let me make this very clear from the beginning. The need for debate is the right of the people. The people of Ghana ought to know what their presidential candidate, and for that matter, the party they represent, have in stock for them,” Professor Darku stated. He added, “We are at a very early stage now, talking to them [the political parties]. We have our timetable, and very soon, it will be known to the public as to the programme that the IEA has outlined to make this all-important presidential debate come on.”

Professor Darku assured that the debates would be scheduled at a time beneficial for both the participating parties and the nation. He refrained from delving into specific details but affirmed that the timing would be advantageous.

Additionally, Professor Darku mentioned that the selection of participating parties and candidates would follow the Afrobarometer criteria.

“It has established a threshold, and we will use that threshold to invite the parties that meet the threshold to participate in the debate. This might be four or five parties, and their presidential candidates and vice-presidential candidates will be invited to participate in the debate.”

The Ghana Police Service has extended an invitation to Mr. Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, following his claims on social media regarding the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein Suale.

In a Facebook live session on July 13, A-Plus asserted that he possesses information regarding the identities of Ahmed Suale’s killers.

He expressed readiness to substantiate his claims if called upon by the authorities.

In a statement, the police sent an invitation to the independent parliamentary candidate for Gomoa Central, stating: “The Cold Case Unit, established in October 2021 under the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to handle cases of this nature, has been working on the investigation into the case and closely engaging with the deceased’s family.

“The Police is therefore pleased that Mr. Kwame Asare Obeng (A-Plus) has given indication that he has some information that could assist the ongoing investigation, and he has been invited accordingly.”

Ahmed Suale, part of an undercover investigative team led by prominent journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, was fatally shot multiple times in late 2021 while driving home in Madina, Accra. The incident occurred shortly after the release of the investigative documentary “Number-12.”

The family of Ahmed Suale has expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of the ongoing investigation into his murder. Mustapha Iddrisu, a brother of the deceased, voiced concerns over the lack of updates from the police regarding the progress of the case.

  • Organised Labour strike bites hard as KATH leaves patients stranded

Organised Labour strike bites hard as KATH leaves patients stranded

Scores of patients seeking Outpatient Department (OPD) services at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi have been left stranded as health workers embarked on a strike effective today, Monday, July 15, 2024.

The strike, initiated by the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and the Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UPNMG), is in response to a call by organized labour.

Patients, some of whom had traveled long distances, arrived at the hospital only to find that healthcare services had been suspended due to the strike action.

Organized labour declared an indefinite strike following the National Pensions Regulatory Authority’s (NPRA) approval allowing the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to proceed with its contentious plan to sell a 60% stake in four hotels to Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotel.

Despite the sustained protests by organized labour leading to the termination of the deal by SSNIT, the unions remain dissatisfied.

Organized labour contends that the current SSNIT board and top management’s involvement in the widely criticized deal highlights significant failures in decision-making and accountability. They believe it demonstrates a clear disconnect from the interests of those they are supposed to represent.

An emergency meeting is currently being held by organized labour to determine the next steps for the nationwide strike. This meeting follows the dramatic developments that ensued after the group’s declaration of industrial action last Friday. Among the issues under consideration is the fate of the management and Board of Directors of SSNIT.

Kenneth Koomson, Deputy Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, highlighted the historical contributions of Ghanaian workers to the nation’s independence, emphasizing the significance of the strike. Speaking to Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show, Koomson reiterated that the strike would not be called off until the SSNIT board is dissolved.

“Ghana’s independence wouldn’t have been possible without the involvement of workers, and politicians should know that. The unity displayed on July 12 is just the tip of the iceberg, and going forward, organized labour is going to ensure that the ordinary Ghanaian is well taken care of,” Koomson stated.

He further explained that today’s emergency meeting would review SSNIT’s letter announcing the termination of the hotel deal and decide on the future course of action.

“We thought it was important to assemble today to review the letter from SSNIT and then take a decision. Today will be a day to communicate to the public where we stand and an announcement will be made afterwards,” Koomson added.

Take advantage of gov’t’s skills training programmes – Napo tells youth

Vice-Presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has called on the youth of Ghana to take full advantage of the government’s skills training programmes to secure their futures.

This appeal was made during the annual church conference and the unveiling of a new constitution of the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana on Sunday, July 14.

Addressing the congregation, Dr. Opoku Prempeh also known as Napo, highlighted the importance of practical skills in today’s rapidly evolving job market.

He underscored the significance of the government’s Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes, which are tailored to provide young people with industry-relevant skills necessary for sustainable livelihoods.

He encouraged the youth to enroll in these TVET initiatives, emphasizing their potential to improve employment opportunities and foster economic independence.

“The NPP government has invested heavily in TVET. Between 2017 and 2020, we invested over US$700 million in upgrading, retooling, and refurbishing TVET facilities at both pre-tertiary and tertiary levels to make them fit for purpose in order to deliver quality skills training that are critical for our industrial agenda as a nation. It is essential that you take advantage of these opportunities,” Dr. Prempeh stated.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh pointed out that equipping oneself with practical skills not only empowers individuals but also contributes to national development by addressing skills gaps in various sectors.

He highlighted Ghana’s advantage of having a youthful and energetic population, willing to be trained and ready to work, which can effectively address youth unemployment and help young citizens lead sustainable lives.

“Ghana is blessed with a youthful and energetic population, willing to be trained and ready to work, which can address our youth unemployment challenges and help our young citizens live sustainable lives. With the right skills, you’ll be empowered to start your own businesses, create jobs, and contribute meaningfully to our nation’s development,” he added.

Dissolve your board and we will end strike action – Organised Labour to SSNIT

Organised Labour has stood firm on its decision to proceed with an indefinite strike starting today, Monday, July 15, in protest against the sale of a 60% stake in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel, a company owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.

The planned strike comes despite pleas for restraint and the announcement on Friday, July 12, that SSNIT had terminated the transaction due to substantial pressure from other worker unions.

Speaking to Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, the Deputy Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, Kenneth Koomson, reiterated the resolve of Organised Labour.

He underscored the critical role of Ghanaian workers in the country’s independence and stated that the strike would not be called off until the SSNIT board is dissolved.

“Ghana’s independence wouldn’t have been possible without the involvement of workers and politicians should know that. The unity displayed on July 12 is just the tip of the iceberg, and going forward, Organised Labour is going to ensure that the ordinary Ghanaian is well taken care of,” Mr Koomson emphasized.

Mr Koomson highlighted that SSNIT’s primary function is to ensure social security for the population, and he criticized the manner in which the hotel sale was conducted. He stressed that the leadership of Organised Labour found the transaction process deeply flawed.

“If you look at the content of the letter, we said we were not going to call off the strike until SSNIT board is dissolved,” Koomson stated.

He also revealed that an emergency meeting would be held today to review SSNIT’s letter and to decide the next steps.

“We thought that it was important to assemble today to review the letter that has been written by SSNIT and then take a decision and so today will be a day to communicate to the public where we stand today and an announcement will be made afterwards,” he added.

  • GTEC orders CETAG to end strike action

GTEC orders CETAG to end strike action

The Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, has called on members of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) to resume teaching duties following the payment of all outstanding research and book allowances.

Speaking at the investiture ceremony of Professor Prince Boateng as the new Principal of Ada College of Education, Professor Jinapor confirmed that the Ministry of Finance has released funds to settle the owed allowances.

He assured CETAG members that they would be able to access their payments through the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System starting Monday, July 15, 2024.

“GTEC is currently collaborating with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to ensure that all staff are appropriately placed on the salary scheme,” Professor Jinapor stated. He emphasized that the government has disbursed a total of over 199 million Ghana cedis to CETAG members, addressing their primary grievance.

The call to return to the classroom follows CETAG’s indefinite strike declaration on June 14, 2024. The strike, which affects all 46 public colleges of education across Ghana, was initiated in response to the government’s delay in implementing the National Labour Commission’s Arbitral Award Orders and other negotiated service conditions.

CETAG’s demands include the payment of one month’s salary for additional duties performed in 2022 and the application of agreed rates of allowances payable to public universities for CETAG members.

The association has stressed that these payments are crucial for safeguarding the economic rights of its members, as protected under Article 24(1) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana and Section 10 (a) and (b) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).

In a statement issued on June 14, CETAG emphasized the importance of upholding these legal and constitutional protections, urging its members to withdraw from teaching and related services until their demands are met.

“CETAG calls on every member to immediately comply with this declaration by withdrawing teaching and related services indefinitely across all 46 public colleges of education until all the orders arising from the Compulsory Arbitration Awards and related concerns are fully implemented by way of payments to our members and implementations thereof,” the statement read.

With the payment of allowances now confirmed, it remains to be seen whether CETAG members will heed Professor Jinapor’s call and return to the classrooms, thus bringing an end to the disruption in the nation’s colleges of education.

Come and apologise for disrespecting Nzemas – Chiefs tell Napo over Nkrumah comment

The chiefs of the Nzema Traditional Area, the birthplace of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, have firmly rejected the apology issued by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate, for his recent remarks about Dr. Nkrumah.

During his introduction event in Kumasi, Dr. Opoku Prempeh stated that President Nana Akufo-Addo had outperformed all previous Ghanaian presidents in terms of development, including Dr. Nkrumah. This comment sparked widespread criticism, leading Dr. Opoku Prempeh to issue a written apology.

However, in a press conference held over the weekend, Nana Kwasi Kutuah V, speaking on behalf of the Nzema chiefs, emphasized that the written apology was insufficient. The chiefs insist that Dr. Opoku Prempeh must personally visit Nkroful, Dr. Nkrumah’s birthplace, to offer a formal apology.

Nana Kwasi Kutuah V highlighted the profound respect and significance Dr. Nkrumah holds for the Nzema people and the entire nation of Ghana. He described any negative remarks about the late President as deeply offensive to the community.

“Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s statement was a disrespect to all Ghanaians, particularly to the Nzema people, the Western Region, and Nkrofulman,” Nana Kwasi Kutuah V stated. “We acknowledge his written apology, but we demand he come here in person to apologize to us, the chiefs, and Dr. Nkrumah’s family.”

The Nzema chiefs believe that a personal apology at Nkroful, a place symbolic of Dr. Nkrumah’s legacy, is crucial to restoring respect and goodwill.

They assert that this gesture would appropriately address the community’s grievances and honor their revered leader’s memory.

    Gov’t misses T-bills target by GHC252m

The liquidity situation in Ghana’s money market remains constrained as the government fell short of its treasury bill target by GH¢252.72 million.

According to the latest auction results from the Bank of Ghana, the government secured GH¢4.468 billion from the treasury bills auction, with all submitted bids being accepted.

The auction saw significant interest in the 91-day treasury bill, which garnered approximately GH¢3.54 billion, representing 73.9% of the total bids. The 182-day bill attracted GH¢782 million, accounting for 16.33% of the bids. Additionally, the one-year bill received GH¢165.3 million.

Despite the tight liquidity, interest rates remained stable compared to the previous week. The yield on the 91-day bill stood at 24.78%, while the 182-day bill offered a yield of 26.74%. The one-year bill’s yield was 27.78%.

The government faces a challenging financial landscape in July 2024, requiring an average weekly bid of GH¢3.5 billion to refinance maturing treasury bills. Investors, however, continue to show a preference for shorter-term bills, favoring the shorter end of the yield curve.

  • Argentina beat Colombia to win a record 16th Copa America

Argentina beat Colombia to win a record 16th Copa America

Argentina triumphed over Colombia to secure a record 16th Copa America title, but the victory was overshadowed by chaotic scenes outside the Hard Rock Stadium, causing an 80-minute delay to the kick-off.

Lautaro Martinez emerged as the hero for Argentina, scoring the decisive goal in the second half of extra time from a through ball by Giovani Lo Celso. The dramatic win was bittersweet as captain Lionel Messi, who had to be substituted midway through the second half due to an injury, was seen in tears but later celebrated his country’s third successive major tournament win at the final whistle.

The start of the match was significantly delayed due to turmoil outside the stadium. Organizers reported that ticketless fans attempted to storm the venue, leading to clashes with police and security personnel. Several arrests were made, and numerous supporters required medical attention from paramedics after waiting for hours in the Miami heat.

Adding to the disruption, the half-time break was extended to 25 minutes to accommodate a performance by Colombian popstar Shakira, a decision criticized by Colombia’s head coach, Nestor Lorenzo.

The match itself was tightly contested in hot and humid conditions, yielding few clear opportunities. Colombia came closest in the first half when Jhon Cordoba’s shot struck the woodwork. Argentina thought they had taken the lead with 15 minutes remaining, but Nicolas Tagliafico’s effort was disallowed for offside. Ultimately, Martinez’s goal not only clinched the title for Argentina but also earned him the Golden Boot with five goals in the tournament.

This victory adds to Messi’s illustrious career, marking his third international tournament win in three years, following the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 World Cup. Despite his impressive achievements, Messi’s future in international football remains uncertain. At 37, his performances have shown signs of decline, with his only goal in this tournament coming in the semi-final win over Canada. He also missed a crucial penalty in the quarter-final shootout against Ecuador and had to leave the pitch due to an ankle injury during the final.

The final also marked the end of Angel Di Maria’s international career, as the veteran announced his retirement from international football after 145 caps.

The pre-match delays were another blow for organizers, especially with the Hard Rock Stadium scheduled to host games during the 2026 World Cup. The incidents in Miami followed similar scenes in the semi-finals in Charlotte, where Uruguay players clashed with Colombia fans over concerns for their families’ safety.

Roberto Garnacho, brother of Argentina winger Alejandro Garnacho, expressed his frustration on social media, stating, “What a shame CONMEBOL, the families not being able to enter the stadium, unbelievable. We were with [Argentina defender Marcos Acuna’s] family outside, getting away from the fights… Argentina’s security had to come get us, children of players crying, people entering without tickets.”

Colombia, which had been unbeaten in 28 games dating back to a World Cup qualifier against Argentina, fell short in their quest for a second Copa America title, their only triumph remaining the 2001 success on home soil. Despite several chances, including Cordoba’s early effort that hit the post, they could not find a way past the resilient Argentine defense.

As Argentina celebrates another historic victory, the chaotic scenes in Miami raise questions about the organization and security measures for future international tournaments.

  • Euro 2024: Spain extends England’s 58 years of no trophy

Euro 2024: Spain extends England’s 58 years of no trophy

England‘s hopes of ending their 58-year trophy drought were dashed as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin.

Despite a spirited comeback, Mikel Oyarzabal’s late strike sealed Spain’s victory, leaving England’s 1966 World Cup triumph as their only men’s major trophy.

In a thrilling encounter, Spain took the lead through Nico Williams early in the second half. England responded with a brilliant equalizer from Cole Palmer, raising hopes of extra time. However, Oyarzabal’s goal four minutes from time secured Spain’s win.

This defeat marks the second consecutive European Championship final loss for Gareth Southgate’s side, following their penalty shootout heartbreak against Italy in 2021. Before these recent finals, England’s only major tournament final appearance was in 1966.

The Three Lions have yet to win a senior football tournament abroad, with their 1966 World Cup and the Women’s Euro 2022 victories both achieved at Wembley.

Southgate’s future remains uncertain as his contract runs until the end of the year. This could potentially be his final major tournament after eight years at the helm. Despite a slow start in Germany, with performances initially criticized and close calls in the knockout stages, England fans dared to dream again until their defeat by Spain.

England’s 1966 World Cup victory, a 4-2 win over West Germany with Geoff Hurst’s hat-trick, remains their sole success. Since then, England has experienced a series of near misses and heartbreaks in major tournaments, including Diego Maradona’s infamous handball in 1986 and penalty shootout losses to Germany in 1990 and 1996, the latter seeing Southgate himself miss a crucial penalty.

There were also years of failing to qualify, such as for the 1994 World Cup and the 2008 Euros, and group-stage exits. The narrative seemed to shift in 2021 when England reached the Euro 2020 final, although most of their matches were at Wembley. Despite taking an early lead against Italy, they lost on penalties after extra time.

This year’s Euro campaign was a rollercoaster. After a win over Serbia, England drew against Denmark and Slovenia in the group stage, narrowly avoiding elimination. The last-16 match against Slovakia saw Jude Bellingham’s injury-time overhead kick force extra time, with Harry Kane scoring the winner.

Southgate’s tactical shift to a wing-back system against Switzerland in the quarter-finals proved crucial. Bukayo Saka’s late goal saved England, who then won on penalties. The semi-final against the Netherlands saw another dramatic finish, with Ollie Watkins scoring in the 90th minute to send England to the final.

Despite these thrilling comebacks, England fell short in the final, and the team’s future under Southgate is uncertain. His contract ends this year, and he has yet to decide on his future.

“I don’t think now is a good time to make a decision like that,” Southgate said post-match. “I need to talk to the right people. It’s not for now.”

England will return to action on September 7th in Dublin against the Republic of Ireland for their first 2024-25 Nations League game, followed by a home match against Finland. These games will be in the second division of the Nations League after England’s relegation last season.

If Southgate were to depart at the end of his contract, he would oversee the remaining Nations League fixtures but leave before the 2026 World Cup qualifiers next year.

Bank customers filed 695 complaints in 2023 – BoG

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has reported a notable decrease in customer complaints lodged against banks, specialized deposit-taking institutions (SDIs), other financial institutions, and payment systems and service providers in 2023.

According to their 2023 Complaints Management Report, a total of 695 complaints were received throughout the year, marking a 29% reduction from the 983 complaints recorded in 2022.

Despite the decrease in overall complaints, the report highlighted that the complexity of complaints had increased, requiring more time and effort for resolution by the Bank of Ghana.

Out of the 695 complaints received in 2023, 458, constituting 66% of the total, were successfully resolved by the end of the year. This reflects a slight improvement from the 64% resolution rate achieved in 2022.

The preferred channel for lodging complaints was predominantly email, which accounted for 42% (291 complaints) of the total complaints received in 2023. This was followed by walk-in complaints, which made up 26% (179), and postal submissions at 21% (148). Phone calls constituted 10% (71), while a minimal 1% (6 complaints) were submitted via WhatsApp.

According to the report, the popularity of email as a complaints channel is attributed to its convenience in allowing complainants to submit supporting documentation alongside their grievances. This facilitates a more comprehensive and efficient handling of complaints by the Bank of Ghana.

The Bank of Ghana remains committed to improving its complaints resolution process, aiming to address customer concerns promptly and effectively across the financial sector. As the complexity of complaints continues to evolve, efforts are underway to enhance complaint management strategies and ensure fair outcomes for all stakeholders involved.

The decline in total complaints for 2023 reflects both positive trends in customer satisfaction and ongoing challenges in the financial services sector, underscoring the importance of robust complaint resolution mechanisms in maintaining trust and accountability within Ghana’s financial industry.

People are looking forward to a Bawumia-Mahama debate; forget the other parties – Nana B

The National Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has underscored the public anticipation for a debate between John Mahama, the main opposition party candidate, and the NPP flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia.

Mr. Boakye also known as Nana B emphasized that such a debate is crucial given the prominence of the NPP and NDC in Ghanaian politics.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM show, Mr. Boakye expressed the view that a debate between Dr. Bawumia and Mr. Mahama would provide a critical platform for discussing policy issues directly with the Ghanaian electorate.

He highlighted the importance of debates in clarifying the positions of both parties on key national issues, especially amidst discussions about the economy and policy decisions.

“I think that for me, we should not even include any other political party. I mean, these are the two main political parties. NPP, NDC, and I think they need to log on to this particular debate because, the NDC claims that a sitting vice president who is also the chairperson for the economic management team made some decisions, and they want to blame some of the challenges that we have regarding the economy on him. That is fine. That is their view. That view can be respected by some people. So why not debate?,” Mr. Boakye remarked.

He noted that organisations like the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), the Ghana Union of Traders Associations (GUTA), and the Trades Union Congress (TUC) are eagerly awaiting such a debate between the two main contenders for the presidency.

“People are looking for it, and it is very important we need to have it,” Mr. Boakye emphasized, highlighting the public interest in seeing both Dr. Bawumia and Mr. Mahama engage in an intellectual discussion about their respective policies and visions for Ghana’s future.

We will frustrate Parliamentary business if NPP MPs don’t return – Minority

The Minority in Parliament has issued a stern warning, threatening to disrupt parliamentary proceedings if there isn’t a significant improvement in the attendance of MPs from the Majority side starting next week.

Since Parliament reconvened in July, the Minority has expressed concern over the consistently low presence of NPP MPs, with often fewer than 30 members from the ruling party attending sessions. This situation, according to the Minority, has placed an undue burden on them to manage government business effectively.

The Minority’s Deputy Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, voiced their grievances on the floor of the House, attributing the absenteeism to NPP MPs accompanying their flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on campaign activities following the unveiling of his running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Mr. Ibrahim emphasized that the Minority cannot continue to shoulder the responsibility of conducting legislative business alone while the Majority neglects their parliamentary duties.

“We will also instruct our legislators to prioritize campaigning if this trend continues, which will undoubtedly cripple the functioning of the House,” Mr. Ibrahim warned.

Time Value: GHC1000 in 2021 is worth GHC450 now – Report

A recent analysis by the 3News Research Desk has highlighted the significant impact of inflation on the purchasing power of the Ghanaian cedi.

According to the report, GHC1000 in 2021 now holds the equivalent value of only GHC450 due to the steep rise in inflation.

The report indicates that inflation has drastically reduced the purchasing power of 1000 cedis. What could be bought for GHC1000 in 2021 now requires a staggering GHC2,216.

In 2021, Ghana’s inflation rate was approximately 9.98 percent. However, by June 2024, the inflation rate surged to 22.8 percent. This dramatic increase has substantially eroded the value of money, making everyday goods and services significantly more expensive.

This steep inflationary trend has profound implications for consumers and businesses. For individuals, it means higher costs for basic necessities such as food, housing, and transportation, straining household budgets and reducing disposable income.

For businesses, it translates to increased operating costs, which may lead to higher prices for goods and services, further perpetuating the cycle of inflation.

We will not respond until Napo’s apology statement bears his signature – CPP

Secretary to the Independent Committee of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Botsio, has indicated that the party will not react to the apology attributed to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, until the statement bears his signature.

This follows controversy sparked by remarks made by Dr. Opoku Prempeh during his unveiling ceremony in Kumasi, where he suggested that no president has contributed to Ghana’s development like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, including Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

In response to the backlash on social media, Dr. Opoku Prempeh reportedly issued an apology in writing. However, Mr. Botsio clarified on JoyNews that the apology statement lacked a signature, making it difficult for the CPP to consider it as an official response.

“However, this apology letter does not bear the signature or any other signature so to say we can respond adequately to it will be an exercise in futility,” Mr. Botsio remarked during the interview.

He emphasized that without a signed statement or a direct verbal apology from Dr. Opoku Prempeh addressing the issue, the CPP would withhold any formal response.

BREAKING NEWS: Nationwide strike declared over sale of SSNIT hotels

The Organised Labour has announced an indefinite strike action in response to the National Pensions Regulatory Authority’s (NPRA) approval for the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to sell a 60% stake in four hotels to Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotel.

Dr. Yaw Baah, the Secretary General of the TUC, expressed bewilderment over the NPRA’s decision to greenlight the deal without further consultations, despite previously instructing SSNIT to suspend the process.

In a statement issued after an emergency meeting on Friday, July 12, Dr. Baah emphasized the lack of transparency and consultation in the decision-making process. He underscored the TUC’s commitment to defending the interests of its members, prompting the directive for all union members to commence strike action starting Monday, July 15.

Minister for Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions, Ignatius Baffuor Awuah, announced in Parliament on Thursday, July 11, that the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) has cleared the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to proceed with its contentious plan to sell four hotels to Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotel.

This decision comes despite significant public opposition and initial directives to halt the transaction.

Addressing Parliament, Minister Baffuor Awuah explained that the NPRA’s initial directive was issued to ensure all details of the sale were thoroughly reviewed.

“As Minister, I can tell you on authority that NPRA has since indicated that they had seen the processes and they think that SSNIT can go ahead,” he stated.

The Employment Minister elaborated that SSNIT’s decision to sell 60% of its stake in the four hotels is part of a broader strategy to enhance investment performance.

Minister for Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions, Ignatius Baffuor Awuah

He emphasized that this move aligns with the primary objective of the scheme, which is to provide monthly pensions and related benefits to Ghanaian workers, ensuring their retirement income security.

“SSNIT’s decision to divest is also supported by its funding and investment objectives,” Mr. Awuah noted. He highlighted that SSNIT has been implementing various strategic measures to achieve its goals, including rebalancing its investment portfolio, increasing investment in fixed income, decreasing equity exposure, and restructuring non-performing investments.

Despite these explanations, the sale has faced backlash from the public and civil society organizations. North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who brought attention to the deal, has raised concerns about the ability of Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotel Limited to turn around the fortunes of the SSNIT hotels.

Mr. Ablakwa pointed out that Labadi Beach Hotel, Ridge Royal, and the other hotels involved are profitable, while Rock City Hotel Limited has consistently reported losses.

Mr. Ablakwa accused the transaction of being part of a larger pattern of state capture by appointees of the Akufo-Addo government.

He questioned the prudence of selling profitable state assets to a company with a track record of financial losses, suggesting that the deal might not be in the best interest of the public and pension contributors.

Accra-Kumasi Highway project fails to see progress due to galamsey

Contractors working on the construction of four crucial bypasses along the Accra-Kumasi Highway are facing significant challenges due to uncovered pits left behind by illegal miners in local communities.

These pits are impeding the smooth progress of the projects, exacerbated by rainy conditions that worsen the already swampy areas.

The government initiative to construct bypasses at Osino, Anyinam, Enyiresi, and Konongo aims to alleviate congestion and reduce the high incidence of accidents along the Kumasi-Accra Highway.

These projects, spanning various lengths from 6.1km to 13.5km, hold promise for enhancing highway travel efficiency once completed.

However, near the project sites in Osino and Anyinam, ongoing illegal mining activities have led to numerous uncovered pits as miners abandon sites after extracting resources.

Similar challenges persist near the Konongo bypass project, where contractors are forced to fill swampy areas with boulders to facilitate construction.

Team leader of STIM Limited, the consulting firm overseeing the Osino bypass project, Dolittle Kwaku Sintim-Aboagye, highlighted additional hurdles including compensation disputes and adverse weather conditions.

He explained, “We have some mining companies and they have their terrace ponds and our alignments go through these terrace ponds so it is either we shift the ponds or go through them and we decided to go through them and that meant the mining companies must decommission these terrace ponds and that is also taking some time, and it is affecting us.”

Moreover, Sintim-Aboagye pointed out the impact of heavy rainfall, stating, “Again, this place is a farming area and so there are compensation issues but the Ghana Highways Authority and the ministry are helping us. And also, the rains have become more severe than usual and that is affecting us.”

Lois Koranteng’s death follows the death of her mother and grandmother all this year

The recent passing of 24-year-old Lois Abena Koranteng has cast a devastating shadow over her family, compounding a year already marred by multiple tragic losses.

Lois, a graduate of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, met her untimely demise under circumstances that have sparked widespread public outcry and demands for justice.

Lois was reportedly found unconscious in a hotel swimming pool during a business trip with her supervisor and a company driver in Takoradi on June 8, 2024.

Despite efforts to resuscitate her, she was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The exact circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation by the Ghana Police Service, who conducted an autopsy revealing the causes as asphyxia, severe pulmonary edema, and drowning.

In a heartbreaking revelation, Lois’s family shared the immense grief they have endured this year, having already lost her mother and grandmother prior to Lois’s tragic passing. According to her uncle, Kwesi Kidman, the family was in the midst of arranging funeral proceedings for Lois’s mother and grandmother when they received the devastating news of Lois’s death.

“This year has been incredibly difficult for our family,” Kwesi Kidman lamented in a viral Facebook post. “We lost my sister, then my mother passed away due to shock shortly after. As we were preparing to lay them to rest, we received the tragic news of Lois’s death in Takoradi. It’s been a year of unbearable loss.”

George Agyenim Boateng, Lois’s brother, expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of the police investigation and the lack of communication from authorities regarding the progress made in Lois’s case. He emphasized the family’s plea for justice and transparency in uncovering the circumstances leading to her death.

The Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, recently reached out to the family, acknowledging their concerns and apologizing for the inadequate engagement initially experienced by the family. He assured them of ongoing efforts to thoroughly investigate the incident and pledged to keep the family updated on any developments.

As the investigation continues, the family remains determined to seek justice for Lois and to honor the memories of their loved ones who have tragically departed this year.

Napo apologizes over “Your Nkrumah” comment

The running mate of the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer (NPP) for the 2024 elections, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as Napo, has issued an apology following a controversial comparison he made between President Akufo-Addo and Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Napo’s comments, made during his unveiling as the NPP’s vice-presidential candidate, sparked criticism from various quarters, including political figures and citizens.

In his statement on Tuesday, Napo suggested that President Akufo-Addo had surpassed all previous Ghanaian leaders, including Dr. Nkrumah, in terms of achievements.

This remark was met with backlash from many Ghanaians, including Deputy Minority Leader Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, who represents the Ellembelle constituency, the birthplace of Dr. Nkrumah, and leaders of the Convention People’s Party (CPP).

Following the public outcry, Dr. Opoku Prempeh issued an apology on Friday, July 12. In his statement, he clarified that his remarks were not intended to undermine the legacy of Dr. Nkrumah or any former Ghanaian heads of state.

“The statement reflects my personal opinion about President Akufo-Addo’s impact relative to other Presidents we have had,” Napo explained. “I wish to emphasise that I never meant to disrespect our former President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand uncle and mentor, Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor.”

Acknowledging the criticism, he added, “I note the concerns raised after my statement. I apologise sincerely and regret any discomfort caused.”

This apology follows an initial defense of his comments despite the widespread condemnation.

Health experts warn of imminent Non-Communicable Disease pandemic

Health experts have sounded the alarm that Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) could potentially become the next global pandemic if immediate and decisive measures are not taken.

Annually, over 94,000 individuals succumb to NCDs, including diabetes, hypertension, kidney failure, and cancers, highlighting the urgent need for more effective interventions.

At the JoyNews National Dialogue on NCDs held on Thursday, leading health professionals called for swift and proactive governmental action.

Prof. Gordon Abekah-Nkrumah from the Department of Health Services Management at the University of Ghana Business School emphasized the necessity of a multidimensional strategy to combat these diseases.

He pointed out that strong regulations and policies are crucial to addressing the underlying causes of NCDs.

“NCDs are the next pandemic. How are we communicating this to the elites who have the power to make decisions when it comes to resource allocation, such as the Ministry of Finance and cabinet?” Prof. Abekah-Nkrumah asked. “Do they see NCDs as the next COVID, which may necessitate the President addressing the nation every fortnight and holding meetings all over the place? The way we package this message and align it with their own incentives, in terms of how this determines their electoral fortunes, will be very important.”

Prof. Abekah-Nkrumah stressed the critical importance of framing the fight against NCDs in a way that resonates with decision-makers, aligning the urgency of the issue with their political and economic interests.

Effectively communicating the severity of NCDs and their potential impact on the nation’s health and economy is essential for garnering the necessary support and resources.

Dr. Kwasi Boahene, Director of Health Systems at PharmAccess, provided a sobering projection of the financial burden NCDs could impose on Ghana.

He revealed that by 2030, the country might spend approximately six billion dollars annually to address these chronic diseases. This staggering figure highlights the need for immediate action to prevent NCDs from overwhelming the healthcare system and economy.

Immediate and strategic measures are needed to prevent NCDs from becoming the next pandemic. This includes implementing comprehensive policies and ensuring effective communication with decision-makers to secure the required support and resources.

The Regent of Mion, Mion-Gbonlana Alhassan Abdulai Mahamadu, has expressed strong support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, ahead of the upcoming election.

During a recent courtesy call by Dr. Bawumia, the Regent highlighted the Vice President’s impressive contributions to the nation and his exceptional leadership qualities.

In a speech read on his behalf on Thursday, July 11, the Mion Regent emphasized the unparalleled nature of Dr. Bawumia’s service as Vice President in Ghana’s democratic history.

He noted that Bawumia’s efforts in promoting peace in Dagbon and initiating numerous projects in the Mion traditional area demonstrate his potential to excel as President.

“Your Excellency, your call on me today reminds me of the special role of my father, the late Mion-Lana Abdulai II. He offered a lot of prayers for Dagbon peace and initiated a lot of projects in the Mion traditional enclave. It is also public knowledge that he held a close affinity with your tradition and charted paths of projects to enhance the living standards of the people of the Mion area,” the Regent stated.

Don’t think 2024 elections will be an easy win for you –  Franklin Cudjoe tells NDC

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has issued a cautionary note to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the party gears up for the 2024 general elections.

Mr Cudjoe emphasized that the NDC should not assume victory is guaranteed and urged the party to present well-defined and quantifiable plans to address Ghana’s economic challenges.

In a recent Facebook post, Mr Cudjoe underscored the necessity for the NDC to outline clear strategies to reduce the nation’s dependence on borrowing and to avoid another International Monetary Fund (IMF) intervention by 2026.

He highlighted the importance of detailed economic plans to gain voter confidence and ensure sustainable growth.

“The major opposition party, the NDC, should not assume 2024 is a done deal. Some of us are yet to see properly quantified interventions that will reduce our reliance on borrowing, and crucially how we may avoid another IMF programme in 2026,” Mr Cudjoe stated.

With Ghanaians set to vote on December 7 to elect a new president and members of parliament, both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC have launched their campaigns.

Mr Cudjoe also stressed the importance of coordinating job creation promises with measurable impacts on GDP. “There is a need for the NDC to coordinate and relate the many promises of creating employment and ascertain by an estimated figure the qualitative addition to GDP,” he added.

IMANI Africa, known for its objective analysis, plans to present brief assessments of the major political parties’ proposals.

Cudjoe noted that these analyses would help the public and media understand the potential impact of the parties’ plans on the country, irrespective of the partisan debates that are expected to intensify in the coming weeks.

Napo needs to see a psychiatrist to cure his inferiority complex – Nyaho Tamakloe

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe, a revered founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has boldly suggested that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, seek psychiatric help to address what he perceives as an inferiority complex.

This striking recommendation follows NAPO’s recent statement praising President Nana Akufo-Addo as Ghana’s best leader since independence, which Dr. Tamakloe found disrespectful to former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

In an interview with 3FM on Thursday, Dr. Tamakloe did not mince words, stating, “It is not arrogance; it is inferiority complex, and he needs the help of a psychiatrist.”

He expressed concern over NAPO’s behavior and comments, suggesting that professional psychiatric assistance is necessary for his mental well-being.

His statement, according to Dr. Tamakloe, undermines the significant contributions of former President Kufuor. “The only thing I will tell him is that he should go to [former President] J.A. Kufuor and apologize to him,” Dr. Tamakloe insisted.

He further elaborated on Kufuor’s legacy, noting the state of the nation when Kufuor assumed office and the progress made during his presidency.

“When President Kufuor took over this country, it was in shambles. He was able to straighten things out,” Dr. Tamakloe emphasized, urging NAPO to show due respect and humility.

Dr. Tamakloe advised NAPO to apologize to Kufuor, describing how he should approach the former president.

“He should go to Kufuor with his hands behind him, kneel before him, and beg him for that sort of statement that he has made,” he stated.

Dr. Tamakloe emphasized that without Kufuor’s leadership starting in 2000, Ghana would not have reached its current level of development.

Go on your knees and beg Kufuor for discrediting him – Nyaho Tamakloe tells Napo

A prominent founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe, has called on the running mate of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, to issue an apology to former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

This comes in response to Dr. Prempeh’s recent statement lauding President Nana Akufo-Addo as the best leader Ghana has had since independence, a remark that Dr. Tamakloe believes undermines Kufuor’s legacy.

In an interview with 3FM on Thursday, Dr. Tamakloe stressed the importance of acknowledging former President Kufuor’s significant contributions to Ghana during his tenure. He emphasized that Kufuor inherited a country in disarray and successfully restored stability and progress.

“The only thing I will tell him is that he should go to [former President] J.A. Kufuor and apologize to him. That is the only person I want him to go to,” Dr. Tamakloe insisted. He highlighted the transformative impact of Kufuor’s presidency, noting, “When President Kufuor took over this country, it was in shambles. He was able to straighten things out.”

Dr. Tamakloe firmly believes that without Kufuor’s leadership starting in 2000, Ghana would not have achieved its current progress. He advised Dr. Prempeh, known popularly as NAPO, to make amends by approaching Kufuor with humility.

“He should go to Kufuor with his hands behind him, kneel before him, and beg him for that sort of statement that he has made,” Dr. Tamakloe asserted.

Moreover, Dr. Tamakloe suggested that Dr. Prempeh might benefit from psychiatric assistance, attributing his controversial remarks to an inferiority complex rather than arrogance.

“As for me, I will not advise him because I have already told you what his problem is. It is not arrogance; it is inferiority complex, and he needs the help of a psychiatrist,” Dr. Tamakloe concluded.

Biden misidentifies Kamala Harris, calls her Trump

In a surprising moment during a high-stakes press conference on Thursday, President Joe Biden inadvertently referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as “Vice President Trump.”

The slip occurred while Biden was addressing the qualifications of his vice president.

“Look, I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president if she was not qualified to be president. So start there,” Biden said, quickly correcting himself to clarify that he was referring to Kamala Harris.

President Biden emphasized that he selected Kamala Harris as his vice president because she is eminently qualified to be president. He highlighted her extensive career as a senator and prosecutor before assuming the vice presidency. In response to a reporter’s question, Biden praised Harris’s performance, particularly her advocacy for women’s reproductive freedoms over the past four years.

“She is qualified to be president,” Biden affirmed. “That’s why I picked her.”

Despite the verbal gaffe, Biden’s remarks reinforced his belief in Harris’s qualifications and her role in advancing key policy issues.

Mr. Kissi Agyebeng, the Special Prosecutor of the Republic, has released the fifth Half Yearly Report under his tenure, as mandated by section 3(3) of the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959).

This comprehensive report highlights the investigations and prosecutions conducted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and developments in its operations from January 1, 2024, to June 30, 2024.

In the report, Mr. Agyebeng emphasized the OSP’s firm conviction that preventing corruption is more effective and cost-efficient than addressing it after the fact.

The OSP has, therefore, intensified activities within its corruption-prevention mandate. Novel initiatives and engagements with stakeholders have been introduced to bolster corruption awareness and education efforts, aiming to shift public perception and reduce corruption-related activities.

These efforts are designed to instill confidence in the anti-corruption drive by highlighting that corruption is a high-risk, low-reward endeavor.

During the first half of 2024, the OSP faced significant challenges as corrupt actors and their agents intensified their pushback against the Office and its principal officers.

The report notes that these attacks are seen as a testament to the OSP’s effective performance in disrupting corrupt interests. The Office remains steadfast in its commitment to combating corruption, remaining impartial to partisan affiliations and status.

Mr. Agyebeng also used the report to wish Ghanaians a successful and hopefully corruption-free general election in the second half of 2024.
