Video: How GWR sends official certificate to record holders

Mother of world recorder holder Ace-Liam Sam Ankrah, Chantelle Kuukua Eghan, recently released a video showcasing the process of receiving and assembling her son’s official certificate from Guinness World Records (GWR).

This demonstration comes amidst controversy surrounding another Guinness World Records certification involving Ghanaian Chef Smith for the longest cooking marathon (individual), which has been disputed.

In the video shared on Instagram, Liam’s mother walks viewers through the meticulous process they followed to receive and assemble the GWR certificate.

She begins by describing how they received the certificate package via DHL delivery, emphasizing the careful packaging and the inclusion of various components.

“The package was meticulously sealed,” she notes, “and it contained several parts: the frame, glass pieces, and the official Guinness World Records certificate itself, which was enveloped and sealed.”

With meticulous care, Liam’s mother proceeds to assemble these components to create the framed certificate, which she proudly showcases online.

Ace-Liam Nana Sam Ankrah made headlines for becoming the world’s youngest male artist at just 1 year and 152 days old, a remarkable achievement recognized by Guinness World Records.

His achievement surpassed the previous record holder, Dante Lamb, who achieved a similar feat at the age of three back in 2003.

  • Hajia4Reall didn’t cooperate with US Attorney’s Office for a lesser sentence – Lawyers

Hajia4Reall didn’t cooperate with US Attorney’s Office for a lesser sentence – Lawyers

Fast Law PC, the legal representatives for Mona Montrage, popularly known as Hajia4Reall, have clarified that she did not cooperate with the US Attorney’s Office by disclosing any names in her effort to seek a reduced sentence.

This assertion was made through an Instagram video posted on the firm’s official page.

“We want to make it clear that Mona Montrage did not engage in any catfishing activities or cooperate with the US Attorney’s Office to reveal any names,” the spokesperson stated. “We have evidence to substantiate these claims.”

The clarification comes in response to rumors suggesting that Hajia4Reall had provided information about others involved in her case to receive a lighter sentence.

The spokesperson elaborated, “Following Mona Montrage’s sentencing, we have been asked about her cooperation. Consider this: If she had cooperated with the US Attorney’s Office, would they have recommended a guideline sentence of 37 to 46 months? Clearly, they would not have.”

Hajia4Reall was sentenced to one year and a day for her involvement in a romance scam that defrauded victims of $2 million. Prior to her sentencing, she had appealed for a reduced sentence by highlighting her role as a single parent.

Mona Faiz Montrage, also known as Hajia4Reall or Mona4Reall, was extradited from the UK to the US due to her involvement in a romance scam targeting older, single Americans. The 30-year-old musician and businesswoman first appeared in Manhattan federal court on May 15, 2022.

Court documents revealed that Hajia4Reall operated five foreign bank accounts through which she received funds from over forty victims, using fictitious business entities across three banks in the Bronx, New York. She pleaded guilty to conspiracy to receive stolen money, one of seven charges, including attempted wire fraud and money laundering. This guilty plea carries a maximum prison sentence of five years.

As part of her sentencing, the court allowed Hajia4Reall to forfeit properties valued at $2,164,758.41 instead of paying monetary restitution for the stolen funds.

    Allegations Involving Her Ex-Partner

In her final submission to the court, Mona and her lawyers alleged that her ex-partner, Luvman Allison, had used her accounts to receive funds from unknown individuals. According to Elenor Fast, Hajia4Reall’s lawyer, Luvman was financially supporting himself through fraudulent activities while on probation following a previous arrest by the US government.

The submission detailed how Luvman deceived Hajia4Reall into believing they were in a genuine relationship, manipulating her trust to involve her in his financial schemes. Mona admitted that although she eventually realized the illicit nature of these activities, she continued out of fear for her safety and that of her daughter.

Hajia4Reall’s sister also testified that Luvman had used her sister’s accounts for transactions related to romance scams. However, these revelations sparked controversy on social media, with many accusing Mona of deflecting responsibility. Some claimed that Luvman was involved in drug-related activities rather than romance scams.

The case of Hajia4Reall continues to attract public interest, highlighting the complexities and far-reaching consequences of romance scams. As her legal team maintains her innocence in revealing identities, the focus remains on the judicial outcomes and the broader implications for those involved in such fraudulent activities.

Chef Smith used our logo despite not being a member – Chefs Association of Ghana

Chef Ebenezer Smith, known for his attempt at a record-breaking cook-a-thon, has been discovered to have used the logo of the Chefs Association of Ghana without being a registered member, according to statements from the association’s officials.

During his high-profile cooking event aimed at achieving a Guinness World Record for the longest individual cooking session, Mr. Smith prominently displayed the association’s logo on his jacket.

This led to the assumption among viewers and attendees that he was affiliated with and endorsed by the Chefs’ Association of Ghana.

However, Peter Agbovi, the National Secretary of the Chefs’ Association, clarified that Mr. Smith is not listed as a registered member of the association.

Upon noticing the use of their logo during the event, the association promptly reached out to Mr. Smith to address the issue and advised him to officially join the association if he intended to use their logo.

“In his cook-a-thon attempt, we observed that he was wearing a jacket bearing our logo. We promptly contacted him to clarify that if he intended to use our logo, he must first become a registered member of the Chefs’ Association of Ghana,” Mr. Agbovi stated in an interview with GHOne TV.

Despite being notified of the requirement to rectify this misrepresentation, Mr. Smith reportedly did not complete the registration process or take steps to comply with the association’s guidelines.

“We did not feature his videos on our social media platforms during the event because he was not an official member, and he did not complete the registration process when we reached out to him. Following the cook-a-thon, we did not have any communication from him until yesterday, when he held a press conference,” Mr. Agbovi added.

  • World Bank supports COCOBOD’s cocoa rehabilitation with $100m

World Bank supports COCOBOD’s cocoa rehabilitation with $100m

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has successfully obtained a US$100 million financing facility from the World Bank, aimed at rehabilitating aged cocoa farms across six key cocoa-growing districts in the country.

The project will cover Assin Fosu, New Edubiase, Nkawkaw, and Juaso districts.

This four-year initiative focuses on rejuvenating cocoa farms by cutting down trees that have lived for over 20 years, preparing the land, and providing necessary planting materials such as seedlings and plantain suckers.

The Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, Mr. Joseph Boahen Aidoo, shared these details during a media interaction on July 4, 2024, as part of a field visit to farms in Assin Fosu in the Central Region.

During the visit, aimed at evaluating the efforts of extension officers and government interventions, Mr. Boahen Aidoo explained that while the trees to be cut down are not diseased, they have outlived their productive lifespan, with some exceeding 30 years and becoming unproductive.

“Once cocoa hits 20 years and above, it has spent its life span, and from that stage, you realise that it bears no fruits, no pods, and the flowers don’t come, yet the farmer would be maintaining such a farm, and this is not productive,” he noted.

The rehabilitation project is expected to rejuvenate these farms, thereby boosting cocoa production. COCOBOD will support farmers with plantain suckers and labor for planting, along with providing extension officers to educate and assist farmers in managing their farms for optimal yields.

Mr. Boahen Aidoo emphasized the necessity of comprehensive support, noting that simply providing seedlings would not be sufficient for the farmers to achieve the desired outcomes.

Highlighting the scale of the project, he mentioned an example where farmers were working on a 30-hectare farm.

“If you cut the trees from this 30-hectare land, and you want the farmer to provide plantain suckers within one year, they cannot. That’s why we’re supporting them,” he explained. He also referenced a similar project executed with support from the African Development Bank (AfDB), which aimed to combat the Cocoa Swollen Shoot Virus Disease (CSSVD).

During the visit, farmers urged the government to expedite the construction of roads in cocoa-growing areas to facilitate the transport of produce and reduce post-harvest losses.

They also called for more extension officers, acknowledging the significant help provided by these officers in their farming activities.

Nana Kweku Appotoi IV, Aboabohene of Assin Nyankomase, lamented the poor road conditions in cocoa-growing communities and urged COCOBOD to lead efforts in improving the infrastructure.

Responding to these concerns, Mr. Boahen Aidoo assured farmers that the government would allocate funds to improve roads in cocoa-growing areas following recent increases in cocoa prices.

He advised farmers on best practices, such as avoiding cocoa cultivation in sandy and clay soils, not burning weeds, and using tree branches as mulch rather than selling them as firewood.

He also cautioned against the use of harmful weedicides and materials like poultry manure, which can damage soil health and reduce crop yields.

Mr. Boahen Aidoo highlighted COCOBOD’s efforts to equip farmers with modern tools, noting that since 2020, they had procured about 100,000 motorized slashers and pruners to help clear cocoa farms and increase production. He encouraged farmers to access these tools from various district offices.

Additionally, he pointed out that COCOBOD had improved the extension officer-to-farmer ratio from one officer per 3,000 farmers to one officer per 600 farmers, nearly meeting the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) standard of one officer per 500 farmers.

  • Portugal to face France in UEFA Euro 2024 quarterfinal match

Portugal to face France in UEFA Euro 2024 quarterfinal match

As Euro 2024 progresses, the highly anticipated quarterfinal showdown between Portugal and France promises to be a riveting contest. Both teams, considered tournament favorites, have had their fair share of struggles, particularly in their attacking departments.

Portugal’s journey to the quarterfinals has been a rollercoaster. The Selecao began with two victories but then suffered a surprising defeat to Georgia.

Their advancement to the quarterfinals was secured through a dramatic penalty shootout win over Slovenia. While Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes have managed to find the back of the net, veteran captain Cristiano Ronaldo has faced challenges in front of goal.

The 39-year-old, participating in a record sixth European Championship, missed a crucial penalty against Slovenia in extra time, leading to an emotional outburst.

Although Ronaldo converted in the subsequent shootout, his place in the lineup is under scrutiny as his goal-scoring prowess appears to be waning. Despite taking the most shots in the tournament (20), Ronaldo has not scored in his last eight Euro matches.

On the other side, France, pre-tournament favorites and two-time world champions, have also been underwhelming, failing to score from open play so far.

Kylian Mbappe, recovering from a broken nose sustained in the opener, scored a penalty against Poland, while France’s other two goals have been own goals by their opponents.

Assistant coach Guy Stephan defended Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann amidst criticism, highlighting the difficulties Mbappe faces playing with a protective mask and the fatigue from a grueling season. Stephan emphasized Griezmann’s experience and contributions, noting his 133 caps and 44 goals for France.

Both teams’ misfiring forward lines will need to spark to life if they hope to advance. The winner of this contest will face either Germany or Spain in the semifinals in Munich.

Friday’s match is also a nostalgic rematch of the Euro 2016 final, where Portugal stunned host nation France with a 1-0 victory in extra time, thanks to Eder’s goal. France will be aiming for their third European Championship title, while Portugal seeks to add to their solitary 2016 triumph.

  • We have to be at our 100% best to beat everyone – Otto Addo on 2025 AFCON qualifiers

We have to be at our 100% best to beat everyone – Otto Addo on 2025 AFCON qualifiers

Black Stars coach Otto Addo is urging his team to deliver top-notch performances as they prepare to “beat everyone” in Group F of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The four-time AFCON champions are set to face Sudan, Angola, and Niger for a coveted spot in next year’s tournament in Morocco.

The match against Sudan is particularly notable as it reunites the Black Stars with former Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah, who currently manages the Sudanese national team, known as the Falcons of Jediane.

The draw for Group F also mirrors the 2023 AFCON qualifiers, where Otto Addo’s squad faced Angola. Ghana’s most recent encounter with Niger dates back to the 2013 AFCON, adding an element of unfamiliarity to this matchup.

In an interview with Ghanafa.org, Addo emphasized the need for his team to be at their best.

“We have to be at our 100% best to beat everyone. There is no small team in Africa at the moment,” he stated.

“You saw at the last AFCON that very, very strong and known teams had problems with the so-called unknown teams, so it’s going to be tough but I think we have the quality to beat all of them. But it’s going to be close, it’s going to be tough, there are no easy games.”

The top two finishers in each group will secure their place in the continental event set to be staged in Morocco. The qualifiers will commence in September this year, determining the first 24 nations out of the 48 that will compete in Africa’s premier football tournament.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the next edition of the AFCON will kick off on December 21, 2025, and run until January 18, 2026.

This timeline sets the stage for a competitive and intense qualification process as teams across the continent vie for a place in Morocco.

  • Flashback: Joy FM suspends Kojo Yankson for calling Mahama an ‘armed robber’

Flashback: Joy FM suspends Kojo Yankson for calling Mahama an ‘armed robber’

Eight years ago, it was reported that Accra-based Joy FM operators of the multimedia group of companies suspended its morning show host Kojo Yankson for two weeks following his comments against then-President John Dramani Mahama.

A group calling itself the ‘Women for Mahama’ called for his sack indicating that his comments were in bad taste and inimical to the fairness of the multimedia group.

Per reports, he called the former President an armed robber.

In a release signed by Theresa Awuni its National Coordinator, it accused the multimedia journalist of deliberately setting out to falsely accuse and assassinate the image of the President.

Consequently, managers of the company were said to have yielded to pressures and handed the host a two-week suspension over the comments.

The news that happened in 2016 resurfaced after Kojo Yankson shared a flier of JoyFM’s State of Play to discuss “The Bawumia Napo love affair” after the NPP confirmed that Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh is the running mate of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Reacting to the post, a netizen accused Kojo Yankson of describing Dr Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, as arrogant.

According to the netizen, the journalist will not be suspended despite making such a remark.

  • The next administration will be saddled with a significant debt burden – Seth Terkper

The next administration will be saddled with a significant debt burden – Seth Terkper

Former Finance Minister Seth Terkper has raised a red flag over the substantial debt burden that awaits Ghana’s next government in 2024.

During a recent media briefing on the country’s International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme and debt restructuring efforts, Seth Terkper expressed deep concerns about the depletion of the nation’s financial reserves and buffers, which are essential for maintaining economic stability.

Mr Terkper emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “The next administration will be saddled with a significant debt burden. Our reserves and financial buffers, which provide essential leverage for economic management, have been nearly exhausted.”

He attributed this precarious state to the country’s reliance on the Primary Balance, which, according to IMF data, could lead to a false sense of security and complacency.

Highlighting the inadequacies in the current fiscal framework, Terkper pointed out that the criteria based on non-interest expenditure fail to address critical components of Ghana’s economic challenges, such as interest payments, arrears, and amortization.

“Using the Primary Balance as a measure of fiscal health excludes critical elements like interest payments, arrears, and debt repayments,” he explained.

He noted that arrears, including those in the energy and banking sectors, were estimated to be GHC 53 billion in 2021, and a portion of this has been added to the public debt without being reflected in the fiscal framework’s ‘financing’ section.

Seth Terkper also cautioned against premature celebrations of perceived economic progress, noting that any apparent improvements are primarily based on the sacrifices of domestic and external lenders who have endured, and will continue to endure, financial losses.

“There is no need to be jubilant,” Terkper warned.

“The view that we have made progress is premised on the sacrifices and largesse of domestic and external lenders. Our legacy may not make us third-time lucky. After HIPC (forgiveness), we should not have defaulted again. We should have continued on the PRMA path, managing crises with significant inflows from our oilfields and the recent IMF tranches and donor support.”

The IMF reported that Ghana’s primary fiscal balance improved by over 4 percent of GDP last year, but Terkper’s analysis suggests that deeper, more comprehensive measures are needed to secure the nation’s financial future.

  • Emi Martinez shines as Argentina advances to Copa America semi-finals

Emi Martinez shines as Argentina advances to Copa America semi-finals

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez emerged as the hero for Argentina as they secured their place in the Copa America semi-finals with a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Ecuador.

The match, which ended 1-1 in regular time, saw Martinez’s crucial saves propel Argentina to the next round.

The quarterfinal clash in Houston began with Argentina taking the lead through Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez, who headed home from close range following a corner in the first half.

Despite their advantage, the World Cup holders struggled to assert dominance, and Ecuador had several opportunities to equalize.

Ecuador’s captain, Enner Valencia, missed a golden opportunity to level the score in the 60th minute when his penalty kick hit the post.

This miss came after Rodrigo De Paul was penalized for handball. However, Ecuador kept pushing and finally found their equalizer in injury time, with Kevin Rodriguez heading an in-swinging cross past Emi Martinez.

The game then proceeded to a penalty shootout, where Argentina’s fortunes initially looked bleak. Captain Lionel Messi’s chipped effort hit the crossbar, giving Ecuador an early advantage. However, Martinez’s heroics quickly turned the tide. He saved Ecuador’s first two spot kicks from Angel Mena and Alan Minda, keeping Argentina in contention.

Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez and Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister successfully converted their penalties for Argentina. Former Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi sealed the victory by scoring the decisive penalty after John Yeboah had kept Ecuador’s hopes alive.

Martinez, who has now faced 24 penalties for Argentina, has conceded only 12, with nine saves and three off-target misses. His performance in the shootout was particularly noteworthy, as he taunted Ecuadorian fans following his saves and celebrated with the largely Argentine crowd in Houston.

Argentina, the 15-time Copa America champions, will face either Canada or Venezuela in the semi-finals. The victory, however, did not come without repercussions for Ecuador, who parted ways with their manager Felix Sanchez after the defeat. Despite having three years remaining on his contract, the Ecuadorian Football Federation decided to terminate his tenure.

“We thank Felix and his coaching staff for their work and professionalism, and wish him success in his future endeavours,” the Ecuadorian Football Federation said in a statement.

  • The Judiciary is better placed to justify an enhanced Supreme Court – AG tells NDC

The Judiciary is better placed to justify an enhanced Supreme Court – AG tells NDC

Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has firmly dismissed allegations from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that President Nana Akufo-Addo is strategically appointing judges to the Supreme Court who are sympathetic to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The AG addressed these claims during an interview at the United States Independence Day Event held at the Embassy Garden in Accra.

The NDC, in a statement released on Thursday, July 4, accused President Akufo-Addo and the Chief Justice of colluding to appoint judges who would protect current government officials from future accountability.

The opposition party contended that the Judicial Council had unanimously resisted the elevation of five judges to the Supreme Court, only to be overridden by the Chief Justice and the President in a covert manner.

Fiifi Kwetey, the NDC’s General Secretary, expressed serious concerns over the nominations, asserting that the move to appoint five new judges to the highest court appeared unjust and warranted strong opposition.

In response, Attorney General Dame refuted these accusations, emphasizing that the nominations were made at the request of the Chief Justice based on the operational needs of the judiciary. He underscored the legitimacy and necessity of these appointments.

“What I am aware of is the request from the Chief Justice, and there is no malice in that. The Judiciary is undoubtedly better placed to provide ample justification for an enhanced Supreme Court,” Dame stated. “It is also important to note that the Supreme Court of Ghana is quite unique.”

The AG’s comments aim to reassure the public and counter the narrative presented by the NDC. He stressed that the appointments were made transparently and in the best interest of the judicial system, not to serve any political agenda.

Dr. Bawumia extolled Dr. Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, for his exceptional qualifications and capabilities, describing him as both “astute and brilliant.”

Additionally, he lauded Napo’s outstanding leadership in transforming Ghana’s energy sector, a testament to his commitment and effectiveness in public service.

Interrogate and verify information before sharing it to avoid spreading falsehoods – IGP to public

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has issued a stern warning against the spread of disinformation in the lead-up to the December 7 general elections.

Speaking at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Thursday, July 4, during a session with an eminent group organized by the Christian Council of Ghana, Dr. Dampare emphasized the importance of accurate information in maintaining peace and security.

Dr. Dampare underscored the critical need for Ghanaians to verify information before sharing it to avoid the damaging effects of misinformation and fake news.

“In the current era of rapid information exchange, managing misinformation, disinformation, and fake news is crucial. These issues can cause significant harm if not addressed properly,” he stated.

He urged all citizens to scrutinize and confirm information, promoting responsible sharing practices to uphold the peace that Ghana has long cherished.

“We need to interrogate and verify information before sharing it to avoid spreading falsehoods that could disrupt peace and security,” Dr. Dampare stressed.

In a bid to further these efforts, Dr. Dampare called on religious leaders to support the initiative. He proposed that police officers engage with religious congregations to discuss election security and address concerns.

“We believe that proactive engagement with congregants every week, discussing the importance of peace, security, and proper conduct during elections, will help achieve our goals,” he noted.

The IGP highlighted that such proactive engagement is essential for ensuring comprehensive election security and countering the spread of false information.

  • We have altered cement L.I. to suit your demands, why still oppose it – Afenyo-Markin asks NDC MPs

Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for the Effutu Constituency, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legislators of acting in bad faith regarding a new Legislative Instrument (L.I) intended to regulate cement pricing.

This follows a recent directive from Speaker Alban Bagbin, advising Trade and Industry Minister K.T. Hammond to withdraw the L.I. after NDC MPs raised new concerns despite previously agreeing to its introduction.

Expressing his frustration, Afenyo-Markin questioned the motives behind the NDC’s actions.

“When the L.I. was first proposed, our colleagues suggested it undergo a pre-laying process, which we accepted. The Subsidiary Legislative Committee of Parliament, led by Dr. Dominic Ayine, reviewed the L.I. and recommended amendments. K.T. Hammond incorporated every proposed amendment into the new L.I. before it was laid again,” he explained.

“Despite this, the next day, members of the Minority attacked the government over the same L.I.”

Afenyo-Markin clarified that the L.I.’s primary goal is to foster competition in the cement industry rather than directly regulate prices.

“This is not an attempt to reintroduce price controls. Our government supports free market principles but believes in regulating to ensure fairness,” he stated.

The Cement Manufacturing Development Committee has also taken a firm stance, warning manufacturers to comply with the new pricing regulations. Professor Alex Dodoo, Chairman of the Committee, emphasized on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show that manufacturers’ licenses could be revoked if they fail to adhere to the ex-factory price reporting requirements.

“While retailers also have reporting obligations, the penalties are less severe compared to those for manufacturers,” he noted.

The leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accepted the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s nominee, Energy Minister and Manhyia lawmaker Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo) as his running mate for the 2024 general elections.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Thursday, July 4, arrived for a meeting at the Alisa Hotel in Accra with party executives where he officially introduced his running mate to the National Council and National Elections Committee.

The nomination awaited the decision of the National Council which was the final approving organ of the NPP.

Engaging the media, the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua (JFK), noted that the party is satisfied with the decision made by the party’s flagbearer.

He touted some successes chalked by Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh during his role as Education Minister, such as the Free Senior High School Policy, during the first term of President Akufo-Addo. He also noted the relatively consistent power supply experienced under Dr Opoku Prempeh’s tenure as Energy Minister.

“So, ladies and gentlemen, if you were to ask me what Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh brings onboard to the NPP presidential ticket, I will say he brings to us a bold, confident, hardworking, result-driven, decisive, grassroots mobiliser, charismatic, patriotic, and demonstrable incorruptible person,” he said.

Among the contenders for the running mate position were notable figures who are said to have been actively lobbying, either directly or indirectly, for the position.

Additionally, there were others whose names circulated in media reports as potential running mates, even though they did not explicitly express their interest.

The three most notable disappointed contenders are Chief of Staff Frema Osei-Opare, Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, and Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum. Supporters of these candidates were reportedly vying against Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh for the coveted role.

Toilet facility commissioned at Ayalolo 3 Basic and Mamprobi Sempe Schools

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Chief Executive, Elizabeth Sackey, has inaugurated a newly completed institutional toilet facility at Ayalolo 3 Basic and Mamprobi Sempe cluster of schools, aiming to enhance sanitation and hygiene within the metropolis.

The project, funded by the African Development Bank (ADB) and part of the Greater Accra Sustainable Sanitation and Livelihood Improvement Project (GASSLIP) under the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, comprises 14-seater sanitation facilities featuring eight pupil’s privy rooms, two teachers’ privy rooms, two disability-friendly rooms, septic tank provisions, connections to Ghana water, BH mechanisation, and rainwater harvesting facilities.

The facility includes 1N.r 10000L and 2N.r 3000L water tanks, and 17 N.r rubbish bins.

Additionally, the initiative includes 12-seater sanitation facilities with six pupil’s private rooms, two teachers’ private rooms, and two disability-friendly rooms, similar provisions for septic tank connections to Ghana water, HB mechanisation, rainwater harvesting facilities, 1N.r 10000L and 2N.r 3000L water tanks, and 15 N.r rubbish bins.

During the handover ceremony, Mayor Elizabeth Sackey acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the World Bank, African Development Bank, and the Government of Ghana in making the project a reality. She highlighted the inclusive design of the facilities, ensuring accessibility for all students, including those with physical disabilities.

“We have ensured that the facilities are accessible to physically challenged students and have dedicated spaces for girls to manage their menstrual hygiene. This will prevent students from having to leave school premises to address their personal hygiene needs, ensuring their safety and comfort,” Mayor Sackey stated.

She urged school authorities and students to maintain the facilities to enhance community sanitation and ensure their longevity. Mayor Sackey also revealed that approximately sixty similar projects are ongoing nationwide.

The project contractor and managing director of Winampang Limited, Alhaji Suleman Bukari, emphasized the importance of proper usage to maintain the quality of the new edifice.

He addressed concerns regarding the specifications of the sitter water closet (WC) and pan system, explaining that the pan system was chosen to reduce diseases and infections among female users. He also highlighted the construction of spaces for physically challenged individuals to promote inclusion.

Headmistress of Mamprobi Sempe Basic School, Madam Naomi Vincentia Addo, expressed her gratitude for the new facilities, noting the immediate positive impact on student safety and attendance. “Previously, some of the children would leave the compound and not return, but with these facilities on site, they have no reason to leave. This ensures they remain on school grounds and focus on their studies,” she said.

Madam Addo emphasized the school’s commitment to maintaining the facility, mentioning several training sessions and involvement of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) to assist with providing necessary items for effective cleanup activities.

The students expressed their appreciation to the mayor and AMA for providing the facility, promising to adopt best practices to ensure its maintenance for future use.

  • Implement sustainable revenue measures to restore macroeconomic stability – Gov’t told

Implement sustainable revenue measures to restore macroeconomic stability – Gov’t told

Policymakers and academics have emphasized the urgent need for the government to adopt sustainable revenue collection measures, effectively manage debt, and enhance monetary policy to address the nation’s economic challenges.

Dr. Nii Kwaku Sowa, Country Director of the International Growth Centre (IGC-Ghana), underscored the importance of improving revenue collection efficiency without imposing additional taxes.

He highlighted the burden that numerous taxes and levies place on businesses, advocating for a streamlined approach to taxation.

“If you ask me to give you a hint as to what can be done about revenue, I will say improve the efficiency of collection of the revenue. Don’t add one single tax more; it becomes a burden to the Ghanaian. There are too many taxes in this system. If you have a business permit, they’ll collect another business permit from you. Too many taxes and levies are killing our businesses, and we should not introduce a new one,” Dr. Sowa stated.

Professor William Baah-Boateng, Head of the Department of Economics at the University of Ghana, led the discussion on fiscal policy.

He pointed to a lack of political will as a significant factor behind the country’s economic crisis and called for a commitment to prudent expenditure management rather than mere cuts.

“In Ghana, the government is too heavy on the system. Maybe I can put it this way; politics is too heavy on the economy,” Professor Baah-Boateng observed.

Discussing debt sustainability, Professor Peter Quartey, Director of ISSER, stressed the importance of responsible borrowing and debt management.

He emphasized the need to consider multiple economic indicators, including export revenue growth compared to interest rates, to ensure sustainable debt levels.

“I think the issue of debt healing is very crucial. Just like Prof. Ackah said, we don’t have one indicator; we have several of them. We have to look at them, look at our economy. We haven’t used export GDP; we have used growth in export revenue compared to your interest rate. If your export revenue is growing by 2% or 3% and your interest rate is 10%, then it tells you, you are going to have issues, and we have to borrow responsibly,” Professor Quartey explained.

During the monetary policy discussion, panelists addressed the role of monetary policy in maintaining macroeconomic stability. They highlighted the need for a balanced approach to ensure long-term economic health.

Delivering the keynote address, Abena Osei-Asare, Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring macroeconomic stability.

She outlined the government’s plans to implement stringent fiscal policies, manage public debt sustainably, and enhance transparency and accountability in public finance management.

“We are committed to implementing stringent fiscal policies to reduce deficits and manage the public debts sustainably. We are also committed to transparency in public finance management, fully implementing the PFM Act and enhancing accountability mechanisms to ensure the efficient and effective use of public funds,” Osei-Asare stated.

Workers abandon offices as CLOGSAG strike takes effect

The nationwide strike declared by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has begun, leading to the closure of offices across various ministries in compliance with the union’s directive.

As the strike took effect on Wednesday morning, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) observed that most offices within the Ministries were shuttered. Only a handful of personnel, primarily security staff, were present in some offices.

A security officer stationed at one of the Ministries confirmed the situation, stating, “Yes, the whole place is locked up. No worker is coming here until they get a directive from CLOGSAG to return to work.”

Explaining his presence despite the strike, a worker in another Ministry cited the inclement weather, remarking, “Once the rains stop, I will go home.”

Among the Ministries affected were the Ministry of Railways Development, Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, Ministry of Works and Housing, Statistical Service, and the CLOGSAG Secretariat.

At the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the main entrance was visibly secured with a padlock, accompanied by a red band hanging on the door. Similar red bands were observed on buildings and trees throughout the Ministries, symbolizing the strike action.

CLOGSAG had announced the strike following a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, July 2, 2024. The association cited the government’s failure to implement a new salary structure that had been agreed upon since January 2023, resulting in a delay of one and a half years.

Accordingly, CLOGSAG instructed its members and secretariats nationwide to refrain from reporting to work until further notice, highlighting their resolve to press for the implementation of the agreed-upon salary adjustments.

The strike action has impacted operations across various government ministries, underscoring the significant stance taken by CLOGSAG in addressing the welfare concerns of its members amidst the delayed salary structure implementation.

Jakpa’s petition of bias by trial judge in ambulance case dismissed by Chief Justice

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has rejected a petition filed by businessman Richard Jakpa, claiming unfair treatment and rights violations during his trial in the controversial ambulance procurement case.

Mr. Jakpa, the third accused in the ongoing trial, had sought the transfer of trial judge Afia Serwaa Botwe, citing perceived bias and mistreatment.

In his petition, Mr. Jakpa alleged that he had been denied basic rights and fair treatment throughout the trial proceedings. He accused the judge of bias, denying him legal representation, and even restricting his access to necessary facilities like restroom breaks.

However, Chief Justice Torkornoo, responding to Mr. Jakpa’s concerns, stated that he had failed to provide substantial evidence to support his claims of unfair treatment.

The Chief Justice pointed out that Mr. Jakpa’s allegations lacked sufficient backing from court records or other substantiating evidence.

In an interview with JoyNews following the Chief Justice’s decision, Mr. Jakpa expressed shock at the dismissal of his petition.

He criticized the Chief Justice for not independently verifying his claims by reviewing court recordings and other trial proceedings.

“I got a response from the Chief Justice, a surprise response that I didn’t provide evidence so she cannot transfer the judge. She didn’t say what I am saying is not true,” Mr. Jakpa stated, highlighting his disappointment with the outcome.

Mr. Jakpa’s allegations have stirred controversy surrounding the fairness and conduct of the trial, which involves allegations of corruption and mismanagement in the procurement of ambulances.

Despite his claims, the trial continues with Mr. Jakpa and other defendants facing serious charges related to the misuse of public funds.

The Chief Justice’s decision underscores the importance of substantiating allegations with concrete evidence in legal petitions, especially when challenging the conduct of judicial proceedings.

Chefs Association of Ghana distances itself from Chef Smith amid GWR hoax

Chef Smith, embroiled in controversy over his claim of a world title following a cook-a-thon challenge, has been revealed not to be a registered member of the Chefs Association of Ghana.

This disclosure came from Peter Agbovi, the General Secretary of the association, further complicating Chef Smith’s standing in the culinary community.

While acknowledging Chef Smith’s professional status, Agbovi clarified, “You can call him a chef because he is a professional, but he is not a registered member of the Chefs Association of Ghana.”

He elaborated that the association first became aware of Chef Smith’s activities through social media posts, where they noted their logo on his attire, prompting concerns.

Efforts to encourage Chef Smith to register as a member were reportedly unsuccessful, leading to the decision not to feature him on the association’s platform.

Regarding the recent controversy surrounding Chef Smith’s purported Guinness World Records certificate, Agbovi expressed dismay, stating, “It’s unfortunate that it’s a fake Guinness World Records certificate. Once you are a qualified chef, we give you respect. It was heartbreaking to see a colleague chef come out with a fake certificate, and we don’t know if it’s his own doing. We have not been able to speak with him yet.”

In light of these developments, Agbovi emphasized the significance of proper registration and adherence to guidelines within the culinary profession.

“Given the circumstance,” he added, “Chef Smith cannot claim to be a member of the Association.”

  • Retract “unconstitutional” Supreme Court judges recommendation to Akufo-Addo – NDC to Chief Justice

Retract “unconstitutional” Supreme Court judges recommendation to Akufo-Addo – NDC to Chief Justice

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally called upon Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo to retract her recommendation to President Akufo-Addo regarding the appointment of new Supreme Court judges, citing concerns over constitutionality.

In a press statement released today, the opposition party expressed strong reservations about the Chief Justice’s recent letter advising President Akufo-Addo to nominate five judges to the Supreme Court. According to the NDC, such a recommendation represents a breach of constitutional norms and threatens the independence of the judiciary.

“The NDC urges Chief Justice Torkonoo to retract her recommendation to President Akufo-Addo for the appointment of new Supreme Court judges,” stated Fiifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC, during a media briefing.

“This action undermines the principles of judicial independence and could set a dangerous precedent for the politicization of Ghana’s judiciary.”

Kwetey emphasized the importance of upholding constitutional safeguards that ensure the judiciary operates free from political interference. He stressed that the appointment of judges to the highest court in the land should adhere strictly to meritocratic principles and due process, rather than being influenced by political agendas.

The controversy arose following Chief Justice Torkonoo’s letter dated May 30, 2024, recommending five individuals for appointment to the Supreme Court, including Justice Afia Serwaa Asare Botwe, who currently presides over significant legal proceedings.

In light of these developments, the NDC has called for a retraction of the recommendation and urged Chief Justice Torkonoo to uphold the judiciary’s role as an independent arbiter in Ghanaian democracy. The party underscored its commitment to safeguarding democratic institutions and ensuring they remain resilient against political interference.

As the debate unfolds, stakeholders continue to monitor the situation closely, recognizing the critical importance of maintaining judicial integrity and independence in Ghana. The NDC remains steadfast in its advocacy for transparent and constitutional processes in the appointment of judges, aiming to preserve the judiciary’s credibility and effectiveness in upholding justice.

  • Akufo-Addo, CJ assaulting our judicial independence with “unconstitutional” SC judges recommendation – NDC

Akufo-Addo, CJ assaulting our judicial independence with “unconstitutional” SC judges recommendation – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vehemently criticized President Nana Akufo-Addo and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, accusing them of undermining judicial independence through what they deem an “unconstitutional” recommendation to appoint new Supreme Court judges.

In a strongly-worded statement released today, the NDC condemned the recent move by Chief Justice Torkonoo to advise President Akufo-Addo to nominate five new judges to the Supreme Court.

According to the opposition party, this action represents a blatant attempt by the Executive to exert undue influence over the judiciary, compromising its impartiality and integrity.

“The blatant unconstitutional actions of President Akufo-Addo and Chief Justice Torkonoo are not just political manoeuvres. They are a direct assault on our judicial independence and the very soul of our democracy,” declared Fiifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC, during a press conference.

Kwetey further highlighted the potential dangers of such actions, suggesting that they could transform Ghana’s judiciary into a mere extension of the Executive branch, used for political purposes rather than upholding justice.

“Imagine a Ghana where the Judiciary becomes a tool for political retribution rather than justice. This is not the Ghana we pledged to fight for,” he added, underscoring the NDC’s commitment to preserving democratic principles and judicial autonomy.

The NDC’s criticism stems from Chief Justice Torkonoo’s letter to President Akufo-Addo dated May 30, 2024, wherein she recommended the appointment of five new judges to the Supreme Court.

Among the nominees is Justice Afia Serwaa Asare Botwe, who currently presides over the contentious ambulance procurement trial involving Ato Forson and others.

As the debate intensifies, the NDC has called upon Chief Justice Torkonoo to retract her recommendation, urging her to uphold the principles of judicial independence enshrined in Ghana’s constitution. The opposition party remains vigilant in its stance against any actions that could undermine the judiciary’s role as a pillar of democracy in Ghana.

  • We need more Supreme Court judges to address several pending cases – Chief Justice

We need more Supreme Court judges to address several pending cases – Chief Justice

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo has justified the appointment of five new judges to the Supreme Court of Ghana, citing the pressing need to address the backlog of cases currently burdening the judiciary.

In a letter dated May 30, 2024, addressed to President Nana Akufo-Addo, Chief Justice Torkonoo officially recommended the nomination of five judges to bolster the Supreme Court’s capacity.

Among the nominees is Justice Afia Serwaa Asare Botwe, who is currently presiding over the contentious ambulance procurement trial involving Ato Forson, among others.

The other nominees include Justice Cyra Pamela Koranteng, Justice Edward Amoako Asante, Justice Eric Kyei Baffuour, and Justice Angelina Mensah Homiah.

Speaking on the matter, Chief Justice Torkonoo highlighted the overwhelming workload faced by the Supreme Court, emphasizing that the addition of more judges is crucial to expedite pending cases and ensure timely justice delivery.

“There are several cases pending, and that is why we need more Supreme Court judges,” she stressed.

The call for additional judges comes amidst criticism from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who have labeled the Chief Justice’s recommendation as unconstitutional.

Fiifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC, expressed concerns over what he described as an attempt by the Executive to undermine judicial independence.

“The blatant unconstitutional actions of President Akufo-Addo and Chief Justice Torkonoo are a direct assault on our judicial independence and the soul of our democracy,” Kwetey remarked during a press conference.

Kwetey further urged Chief Justice Torkonoo to retract her recommendation to President Akufo-Addo, cautioning against the judiciary becoming a political tool rather than a pillar of justice in Ghana.

“Imagine a Ghana where the Judiciary becomes a mere extension of a failed Executive – a tool for political retribution rather than justice. This is not the Ghana we pledged to fight for,” he added.

Blue Ocean LPG Bottling Plant, Puma Energy Ghana supports clean cooking initiative with 1,025 cylinders

Blue Ocean LPG Bottling Plant has joined forces with Puma Energy Ghana to support Ghana’s clean cooking initiative by distributing over 1,025 Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders to six local communities.

This partnership is part of a broader plan to distribute more than 15,000 cylinders by December 2024, aimed at transitioning households from traditional fuels like wood and charcoal to cleaner and more efficient LPG.

In sub-Saharan Africa, LPG plays a crucial role in the energy mix, particularly where access to clean cooking fuels and technologies remains limited. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), millions of people rely on wood, charcoal, and kerosene for cooking, contributing to environmental degradation and health issues such as childhood pneumonia and asthma.

The initiative by Blue Ocean and Puma Energy seeks to address these challenges by providing innovative solutions to low-income households, enabling them to access clean cooking alternatives that improve both health and environmental welfare. This effort aligns with Ghana’s goal to increase LPG penetration to 50% of households by 2030, as outlined in the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS).

The distribution process is part of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA)-led Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) project, designed to enhance access to clean energy through efficient and safe bottling facilities. Blue Ocean’s state-of-the-art plant ensures operational efficiency and safety with automated and manual filling installations capable of handling various cylinder sizes.

Zwelithini Mlotshwa, General Manager of Puma Energy Ghana, emphasized the partnership’s commitment to improving community well-being through clean cooking access. “By reducing reliance on harmful traditional cooking fuels, we aim to positively impact health outcomes and environmental sustainability,” he stated.

Michael S. Kyeremanteng, Operations Manager at Blue Ocean LPG Bottling Plant, highlighted the facility’s role in supporting energy efficiency and the implementation of the CRM project in Ghana. “Our plant ensures safety and accessibility, bolstering efforts to provide clean cooking solutions across urban and rural communities,” he noted.

The collaboration also underscores Puma Energy’s broader commitment to the clean cooking agenda, as reflected in their participation in the Clean Cooking Declaration at the International Energy Agency’s Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa. By joining this initiative, Puma Energy commits to advancing clean cooking solutions through practical actions and fostering collaboration among stakeholders.

As distribution continues across communities in 11 regions of Ghana, stakeholders anticipate significant strides towards achieving cleaner, healthier cooking environments and sustainable energy practices nationwide.

Reconsider your “regrettable” decision to boycott Dep. Trade Minister vetting – Majority to Minority

The Majority Caucus in Parliament has expressed dismay over the Minority Caucus’s decision to boycott the vetting of the Deputy Minister-designate for Trade and Industry.

In a statement issued on July 2, the Majority Caucus described the reasons given by the Minority for their action as regrettable.

The statement underscored the government’s commitment to a comprehensive approach in addressing national challenges, emphasizing the importance of incorporating input from all sectors of society into national development initiatives.

“While acknowledging the government’s achievements, the Majority Caucus also highlighted the ongoing challenges facing the nation and stressed the necessity of uninterrupted governance,” the statement read.

“Our fellow citizens across the country would not look kindly upon this esteemed House if we allow a disruption in governance simply due to impending elections,” it added.

The boycott by the Minority on the Appointments Committee, which oversees the vetting of government appointees, has raised concerns about the legislative process and the smooth functioning of government affairs.

The Majority Caucus’s statement comes amidst broader discussions about parliamentary procedures and the role of opposition parties in ensuring effective governance and accountability.

Efforts to reach the Minority Caucus for comment on their decision to boycott the vetting process have not yet yielded a response.

In an interview with JoySports, Acquaah-Harrison expressed her commitment to refurbishing the pool and making it operational within a maximum of three months.

She emphasized the importance of upgrading the facility, noting that it currently lacks essential features necessary for training and competitions.

“We’re renovating the pool, and I’m optimistic that within three months at most, it will be ready,” Acquaah-Harrison stated.

“This is a competition pool without a shallow end. Our goal is to establish a swimming club alongside the renovation, and we hope to see that initiative flourish.”

  • Present audit report on National Cathedral project to Parliament – Minority to gov’t

Present audit report on National Cathedral project to Parliament – Minority to gov’t

The Minority in Parliament has called on the government to release the full value for money audit report allegedly conducted on the National Cathedral project.

This demand follows a revelation by the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Abena Osei Asare, that the government had conducted a value-for-money audit before disbursing funds for the stalled project.

During a parliamentary session, Minister Osei Asare disclosed that a total of 339 million Ghana cedis had been released for the National Cathedral project, which remains at the foundation level.

The funds include GHC225 million paid to the National Cathedral Secretariat and GHC113 million paid directly to the project consultant.

“There was a value-for-money audit done on the project in 2021. Also, a statutory audit of the National Cathedral of Ghana accounts by Deloitte Ghana was started in July 2023 and is ongoing. Auditors had concluded the audit of the 18-month account ended on December 31, 2020. Meanwhile, preparations are in place for the auditors to complete the remaining accounts for the periods ending December 31, 2021, 2022, and 2023,” explained Osei Asare.

In response, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, demanded the release of the audit report. Mr Ablakwa asserted that the full report must be made available to Parliament if it indeed exists.

“All these claims that they have a value for money report, if that report exists, what you do is that you bring that report to the House so that we can peruse the document. It wasn’t brought to us. We are demanding those documents,” stated Ablakwa.

He further called for a comprehensive parliamentary probe into the project, citing numerous issues that have arisen since its inception.

“This National Cathedral project has opened a can of worms from inflation pricing, procurement breaches, constitutional violations, conflict of interest, double identity, and demolition of properties; it is a whole mess that one parliamentary question cannot resolve. What we need is a full-scale parliamentary inquiry to go into the entire project,” he stressed.

Since the commencement of the National Cathedral project in 2020, it has been mired in controversy and scandal, particularly highlighted by the opposition National Democratic Congress.

The project has sparked widespread debate, with many questioning its necessity and timing, as well as criticizing the lack of transparency in the management of the allocated funds.

  • We have not declared any strike over unpaid allowance – NASPA

We have not declared any strike over unpaid allowance – NASPA

The National Service Personnel Association (NASPA) has officially distanced itself from a purported strike declared by a group known as the “Concerned NSS Personnel Association of Ghana” (CONSAG).

In a statement signed by NASPA President Gideon Osei, the association clarified that CONSAG has no mandate to represent the interests of national service personnel.

“NASPA, the official representative body for all national service personnel in Ghana, categorically states that we have not declared any strike. We urge the public to disregard the statement from the ‘Concerned NSS Personnel Association of Ghana’ as they are not a recognised organisation,” the statement read.

NASPA emphasized its ongoing engagement with the National Service Scheme (NSS) management to address the recent delays in allowance payments.

The association reassured service personnel that allowances for April 2024 have been processed and will be reflected in their accounts by Friday, July 5, 2024. Furthermore, allowances for May 2024 are expected to be paid by Friday, July 12, 2024.

“NASPA remains committed to your well-being. We are working diligently with the management of the scheme to prevent future delays and ensure the timely reflection of allowances in their e-zwich accounts,” the statement continued.

NASPA acknowledged the patience and understanding of service personnel during this period of delayed payments and urged them to remain calm and continue their valuable service to the country.

The association reaffirmed its dedication to addressing the concerns of service personnel and maintaining open communication with the NSS management to resolve any issues promptly.

  • The term of BoG Governor must overlap that of the President to ensure continuity – IEA

The term of BoG Governor must overlap that of the President to ensure continuity – IEA

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) is urging substantial revisions to the Bank of Ghana Act 2016, with a particular focus on extending the tenure of the Central Bank Governor.

This move is aimed at ensuring continuity and shielding the position from the influence of presidential terms.

During a Stakeholders’ Forum titled “Reviewing the Bank of Ghana’s Act to Promote Transparency, Accountability, and Effectiveness,” Senior Scholar Prof. Alexander Bilson Darku presented the IEA’s viewpoint.

He stressed the necessity of protecting the Central Bank from excessive governmental interference, particularly concerning the Governor’s tenure and conditions of service.

Prof. Darku asserted that the proposed amendments would bolster Ghana’s economic stability by enhancing the independence and operational effectiveness of the Bank of Ghana.

“Maintaining the autonomy of the Governor is paramount for ensuring the transparency, accountability, and overall effectiveness of the Central Bank,” he noted.

The forum delved into several critical aspects, including the composition of the Bank of Ghana’s board, the Governor’s appointment process, and the regulatory framework governing lending limits to the government.

A consensus emerged on the importance of aligning the Governor’s term with that of the President to promote continuity and effective governance.

“There was a consensus on the necessity for Ghana to carefully consider aligning the term of the Bank of Ghana Governor to overlap with that of the President to ensure continuity and effectiveness in governance,” Prof. Darku explained.

The IEA’s call for amendments highlights the need for a more insulated and stable leadership at the Bank of Ghana, aiming to foster a regulatory environment that can withstand political pressures and maintain its focus on economic stability and growth.

  • Lagoon fishing ban in Edinaman lifted

Lagoon fishing ban in Edinaman lifted

President Nana Akufo-Addo on Tuesday participated in the vibrant Bakatue festival, joining the chiefs and people of Elmina (Edina) to mark the ceremonial lifting of the fishing ban in the area.

The event, which drew hundreds of people including tourists and residents, was led by the Omanhen of the Edina Traditional Area, Nana Kodwo Conduah VI.

Nana Kodwo Conduah VI, alongside his chief priests, performed traditional rites in the Benya Lagoon, culminating in the casting of a fishing net three times to officially lift the ban. The first catch was symbolically presented to the Omanhen, who then handed it over to the dignitaries present.

The ceremony was attended by several notable figures including the Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng; Central Regional Minister, Justina Marigold Assan; Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mark Okraku Mantey; Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Akwasi Agyeman; and the Head of the Local Government Service, Dr. Nana Ato Arthur.

Adding to the festivities, women groups showcased colorful Tekua headgear in a display of canoes, while a lively regatta brought further excitement to the event.

In his address, President Akufo-Addo assured the public of the government’s dedication to ensuring a peaceful, free, fair, and transparent general election on December 7. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the nation’s reputation for democratic integrity and called on citizens to contribute to sustaining peace.

“We would not allow violence during the election, we will ensure a free, fair and transparent poll,” the President declared. He underscored that elections should be seen as democratic exercises, not conflicts, and highlighted Ghana’s achievements in democratic governance.

President Akufo-Addo also responded to local needs, pledging to de-silt the Benya Lagoon and provide a bus for Edinaman SHS as requested by the Omanhen. Additionally, he presented the Edina Traditional Council with drinks and a financial gift of GH¢50,000.

Nana Kodwo Conduah VI proposed the establishment of a festival fund to enhance the celebration and promotion of local festivals. He called on the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture to collaborate on this initiative, emphasizing its economic potential.

The Omanhen also requested that a portion of the royalties from the Elmina Castle be allocated to the traditional council. He praised the government for the construction of the Elmina Fishing Harbour, a long-desired project for the community.

  • We are lagging in putting up infrastructure to check flooding – Housing Minister

We are lagging in putting up infrastructure to check flooding – Housing Minister

Works and Housing Minister, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, has openly acknowledged that the government is lagging behind in implementing measures to mitigate the recurring flooding in Accra.

The Ofoase Ayeribi MP shared his concerns on JoyNews’ PM Express, emphasizing the persistent anxiety that accompanies the rainy season due to the inadequate infrastructure currently in place.

“When the rains start here in Accra, you start getting palpitations because you start worrying, knowing very well that due to the inadequacy of the work done so far compared to the increasing pressure, there will be challenges,” Oppong-Nkrumah said.

He stressed the importance of understanding the severity of the flooding situation during heavy downpours and the immediate and medium-term steps needed to address it.

Despite the challenges, the Housing Minister remains committed to improving flood resilience in the capital.

Last week, he initiated the reconstruction of the Nima-Paloma storm drain, which extends from Asylum Down to the Odaw Channel, as part of efforts to bolster flood defenses in communities along the Odaw River basin.

“This significant milestone is expected to help reduce the perennial flooding challenges in Accra and bring much-needed relief to residents, commuters, traders, and businesses,” Oppong Nkrumah stated at the groundbreaking ceremony.

He also revealed that the government’s newly launched Flood Early Warning System is expected to be operational ahead of the next rainy season.

This system, developed in collaboration with the Ghana Hydro Authority, Water Resources Commission, Ghana Meteorological Agency, and NADMO through the GARID Project, aims to provide advanced warnings to residents in flood-prone areas, allowing them to take necessary precautions.

“While structural interventions alone cannot completely eradicate the flooding challenges in Accra, the Ministry of Works and Housing is establishing a flood early warning system for the Greater Accra Region. The early warning system will provide advanced notification of impending floods to residents in flood-prone communities so they can take steps to protect lives and properties ahead of a flooding event,” he explained.

Parliament has approved $250 million for the GARID Project, which focuses on one of the major water channels in the Greater Accra Region. This funding is intended to address previously unfunded parts of the program and cover some price variations.

“The Project deals with one out of about eight or so channels in the Greater Accra Region that convey high volumes of water out of the capital when it rains. That money was supposed to be top-up money to help pay for some previously unfunded parts of the program and to pay for some price variation,” Oppong Nkrumah noted.

In the coming weeks, the Ministry plans to hand over the storm drains in Kaneshie to a contractor to commence work. This area, known for high volumes of water during rains, requires significant upgrades to its drainage system to prevent flooding.

“Kaneshie is one of the areas which has high volumes of water coming in. If you look at the kind of drains that were constructed initially and the technology that was used, it requires some more expansion and depth. If it’s not done, there will be flooding at Kaneshie every time it rains, especially from the bank quarters intersection,” he added.

Additionally, the Ministry plans to construct retention ponds near the Aburi Mountain to hold and manage water flow into Accra.

With these projects and the funding in place, Oppong-Nkrumah is hopeful that significant progress will be made to alleviate the flooding situation in the capital.

  • Nick Cannon insures his testicles for $10 million

In an unconventional move, Nick Cannon, the prolific television host and father of 12, has taken out a $10 million insurance policy on his testicles.

Announcing the news on Entertainment Tonight, Cannon explained his decision to insure what he considers his “most valuable asset.”

“I had to insure my most valuable assets,” Cannon said. “You hear about all these different celebrities insuring their legs or other body parts, so I thought, ‘Hey, I need to insure my most valuable body part.’”

The insurance policy was arranged in collaboration with Dr. Squatch, a men’s grooming company with which Cannon is currently involved in a new campaign. The campaign, which humorously allows users to determine the “value of their balls,” crowned Cannon with the title of Most Valuable Balls.

“We know how to make noise out here, and that’s exactly what we did,” Cannon told ET, speaking about the partnership. The star announced the insurance policy on Instagram several weeks ago, sparking both amusement and curiosity among his followers.

“Haters say it’s time for me to stop having kids and put this super sperm to rest, but I’m doubling down on these valuable balls and my future kids,” Cannon wrote in his post.

“Shoutout to Dr. Squatch for giving my balls the credit they deserve and hooking me up with the protection I need to keep this family tree rolling!”

Despite the bold statement, Cannon clarified that he isn’t planning on expanding his family in the immediate future. “[I’m] just making sure nothing goes wrong,” he assured ET.

This latest venture is yet another chapter in Cannon’s headline-grabbing life. Known for his roles as the host of “The Masked Singer” and a father to 12 children, Cannon’s personal and professional choices continue to captivate public interest.

The collaboration with Dr. Squatch is just one of many business endeavors Cannon has embarked on. His decision to insure his testicles underscores his unique approach to branding and self-promotion, ensuring that his most talked-about attributes are well-protected.

As the world reacts to Cannon’s latest announcement, one thing is clear: Nick Cannon is committed to safeguarding his assets, both for their value and for the sake of his ever-growing family.

  • Annette Addo-Yobo becomes first Ghanaian to be crowned Miss Texas

Annette Addo-Yobo becomes first Ghanaian to be crowned Miss Texas

Annette Addo-Yobo of North Texas has achieved a historic milestone by being crowned Miss Texas 2024.

The prestigious beauty pageant took place on Saturday night at the Charles W. Eisemann Center for Performing Arts in Richardson, marking a significant moment in the pageant’s history.

Addo-Yobo’s victory is groundbreaking as she becomes both the first immigrant-born and the first Ghanaian to win the title of Miss Texas. Representing Miss Southlake, she surpassed fierce competition to earn this esteemed honor.

Originally born in Ghana and raised in Canada and the United States, Addo-Yobo pursued her education at the University of Texas at Dallas, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2020.

In a heartfelt message on the “Miss Southlake” social media account, she shared the challenges she faced due to her citizenship status, which prevented her from accessing numerous opportunities during her teenage and college years. It was not until 2022 that she received her U.S. citizenship.

Expressing her gratitude in an Instagram post, Addo-Yobo said she feels “humbled, honored, and grateful” to be the 87th Miss Texas.

She looks forward to “continuing to make history with the Texas community and the Miss Texas class.” Her victory in the Miss Texas 2024 competition comes with a $20,000 scholarship and the opportunity to represent Texas in the Miss America contest.

Previously holding the title of Miss Dallas in 2023, Addo-Yobo used the pageant’s talent contest to shine a light on a cause close to her heart: autism awareness.

Her spoken word performance highlighted her dedication to this issue, which has been significant in her life since her younger brother Andrew was diagnosed on the autism spectrum at age four.

“I want to bring autism safety, awareness, and education to the frontlines of our programming and our legislation. My younger brother Andrew had a large learning curve to overcome as an immigrant to this country,” Addo-Yobo shared.

Her win has only reinforced her commitment to using her platform, The SPARK Project, to address the structural inequities faced by individuals with autism.

“As a sibling to someone on the spectrum, I noticed the systemic inequities and lack of education and training very early. It is my mission to amplify the voices of the autistic community and ensure that legislators, decision-makers, and community members see us and fight for us,” she added in her Instagram post.

The Miss Southlake social media account also highlights some of her previous work, including her efforts to bring autism awareness to Capitol Hill in March as the sole volunteer advocate for Autism Speaks.

The final winners of the 2024 Miss Texas competition are as follows:

    • Miss Texas: Miss Southlake, Annette Addo-Yobo
    • 1st Runner-Up: Miss Space City, Chloe Burke
    • 2nd Runner-Up: Miss Southeast Texas, Anyssa Mujica
    • 3rd Runner-Up: Miss Plano, Sadie Schiermeyer
    • 4th Runner-Up: Miss Burleson, Nicole Wingard
  • The presidency is not for Cheddar, he should run his business – Ayariga

The presidency is not for Cheddar, he should run his business – Ayariga

Hassan Ayariga, founder and flagbearer of the All People’s Congress (APC), has urged Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar and founder of the New Force Movement, to step away from politics and concentrate on his successful business ventures.

Speaking on the ‘On A More Serious Note’ show on Joy Prime, Ayariga expressed his opinion that Cheddar is better suited to managing his businesses rather than pursuing the presidency. He questioned Cheddar’s motivations for entering politics and asserted that the presidency is not within his scope.

“I don’t know what got Cheddar into the game; I don’t know his vision or reason for coming into the game. Cheddar is a friend and a businessman. He should run the business the way he is. The presidency is not for him,” Ayariga stated during the interview with host KMJ.

Acknowledging Cheddar’s success in business, Ayariga emphasized that wealth alone does not qualify someone to be president. He stressed that leadership requires vision and sound policies, qualities he believes Cheddar may not possess for presidential leadership.

Ayariga also criticized Cheddar’s proposal to expand the sea to Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital, as impractical given Ghana’s economic challenges. He urged political aspirants, including Cheddar, to focus on developing policies that promote economic independence and address the country’s pressing needs.

“Who can take the sea to Kumasi? When you sit down and say you’re taking the sea to Kumasi, and you sit down to analyse that policy, what does he intend to achieve? Common roads, you cannot do in this country,” Ayariga questioned, highlighting the importance of feasible and impactful initiatives.

  • NSS personnel strike over 5-month allowance arrears

NSS personnel strike over 5-month allowance arrears

The Concerned National Service Scheme (NSS) Personnel Association of Ghana (CONSPAG) has announced a nationwide strike beginning today, Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

The strike action comes in response to the prolonged delay in the payment of allowances owed to NSS personnel across the country.

In a statement dated July 2, 2024, CONSPAG addressed all NSS personnel, user agencies, and stakeholders, highlighting the dire circumstances that necessitated this drastic measure.

The association pointed out significant challenges faced by personnel, including difficulties in covering accommodation and utility bills, transportation costs to their assigned agencies, and basic sustenance at their workplaces.

According to CONSPAG, the non-payment of allowances has forced many NSS personnel into borrowing money to meet their daily needs, leading to financial stress and health issues among the affected individuals.

“We are entitled to our monthly allowance as we render mandatory service to the state. As of now, the government owes trainees five months allowance and graduates from the Universities three months,” the statement read.

The association underscored that the current situation violates NSS rules and regulations, which stipulate that personnel failing to report to their posts for three months after assignment face sanctions.

Despite their continued dedication to their duties, NSS personnel have endured working conditions marked by hunger and other adversities due to the unpaid allowances stretching over five months for trainees and three months for university graduates.

CONSPAG emphasized that the strike action aims to compel the government to prioritize the payment of overdue allowances, ensuring fair treatment and respect for the contributions of NSS personnel to national development.

  • Interlocutory injunctions against Anti-LGBTQ bill to be ruled on July 17

Interlocutory injunctions against Anti-LGBTQ bill to be ruled on July 17

The Supreme Court of Ghana has scheduled July 17, 2024, as the date for delivering rulings on two separate lawsuits challenging Parliament’s passage of the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.

The cases were filed by Broadcast Journalist Richard Dela Sky and Researcher Dr. Amanda Odoi, each raising distinct concerns about the bill.

Richard Dela Sky, in his lawsuit, challenges the constitutionality of the bill, asserting that it breaches several provisions of the 1992 constitution and infringes upon fundamental human rights guaranteed by Ghanaian law. He seeks a declaration from the court that the bill is unconstitutional.

Meanwhile, Dr. Amanda Odoi’s lawsuit focuses on specific provisions within the bill that she finds problematic. She has also requested a restraining order to prevent the Speaker of Parliament, the Attorney General, and the Clerk of Parliament from forwarding the bill to President Akufo-Addo for his approval.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo informed the court that the cases would be treated separately, following a request by Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame. This decision means that each lawsuit will receive its own distinct ruling.

During the proceedings, Dr. Ernest Ackon, representing Dr. Amanda Odoi, argued that the bill imposes a direct charge on public funds, which he claims violates Article 108 of the constitution. He also highlighted the absence of a fiscal impact analysis prior to the bill’s submission to the President.

In response, Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame defended the constitutionality of the bill, arguing that the Speaker’s discretion in handling such matters is within legal bounds and does not require a fiscal impact analysis as claimed by Dr. Ackon.

Counsel for the Speaker of Parliament, Thaddeus Sory, countered the arguments, stating that the bill’s transmission to the President is still an ongoing process and therefore not yet subject to the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction.

Sory emphasized that previous applications for injunctions related to the bill had been dismissed by the courts, suggesting a precedent that could influence the current case.

As the Supreme Court chaired by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo continues to deliberate, stakeholders await the rulings that will determine the fate of the contentious Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill in Ghana.

  • Chief Justice petitioned over alleged bias by trial judge in ambulance case

Chief Justice petitioned over alleged bias by trial judge in ambulance case

Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ongoing ambulance trial, has petitioned the Chief Justice, alleging unfair treatment throughout the legal proceedings.

Jakpa claims that his basic human rights and privileges have been repeatedly denied during the trial.

In an interview with JoyNews, Jakpa expressed his grievances, stating, “Right from the beginning of this trial till today, I have not been treated fairly at all by the judge. I am saying that because I have written a petition to the Chief Justice on this. So, I am not speaking out of a vacuum, and it is recorded. It is documented.”

Jakpa detailed various instances of perceived bias and rights violations in his petition. He accused the judge of denying him legal representation, basic needs such as restroom access, and engaging him inappropriately in court.

He believes these actions indicate that the judge has already presumed his guilt, and he is merely fulfilling procedural requirements.

Additionally, Jakpa accused Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame of prosecuting the case against Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson for political reasons.

Jakpa suggested that Forson posed a threat to government interests, particularly regarding the contentious E-levy, and that the prosecution was a tactic to silence him.

“Attorney General came to court purely on political convenience and mischief to imprison Hon. Ato Forson, and this stems from the E-levy. Because Honorable Ato Forson was the ranking member for the NDC in Parliament and he was giving them a headache, he was frustrating and being meticulous on the figures that Ken Ofori-Atta was bringing to Parliament,” Jakpa asserted.

He further alleged that the accusations against him were part of a strategy to mask the political motivations behind the Attorney General’s actions. Jakpa claimed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta had influenced Dame to prosecute Forson to intimidate him and reduce his critical oversight in Parliament.

Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah Yeboah refuted Jakpa’s allegations, defending Dame’s integrity and professionalism. Yeboah emphasized Dame’s competence and success in both local and international legal arenas.

“If you look at the AGs that we have in Ghana, if he [Godfred Dame] is not the best, he will be one of the best when it comes to his courtroom appearance. Look at international arbitrations. An Attorney General who leads his team to go on international arbitration and win cases internationally, not locally. So if you say local champion, what does it mean?” Yeboah questioned.

  • Shelve Free SHS bill for further engagement – NAGRAT to gov’t

Shelve Free SHS bill for further engagement – NAGRAT to gov’t

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has voiced significant concerns regarding the proposed Free Senior High School (SHS) Bill currently under discussion in Parliament.

The association highlights a worrying lack of consultation with key stakeholders, including teacher unions, in the development of the proposal.

NAGRAT expressed disappointment with the Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei-Adutwum, particularly over plans to separate Junior High School (JHS) from Primary School and eliminate the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) as a prerequisite for Senior High School admission.

The association considers these changes critical and believes they necessitate extensive stakeholder engagement.

In a statement issued on July 3, 2024, NAGRAT stated, “We hereby express our disappointment over the lack of any extensive stakeholder consultations and inputs on the impending supposed Free Senior High School (SHS) Bill, especially from the Teacher Unions whose Members are key in the implementation of the Free Senior High School programme.”

The association is calling for the government to halt the bill’s presentation to Parliament to facilitate broader consultation. They also appealed to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education to reject the bill, citing the absence of input from education stakeholders, particularly teacher unions.

“We hereby demand that the government, in the interest of mutual respect and acceptance of any law that will affect education, should suspend the presentation of the said bill to Parliament to allow for broad consultation.

“We call on Parliament, especially the Select Committee on Education, that the so-called Bill is without Education Stakeholders’ inputs, particularly the teacher unions, and therefore, should respectively, be rejected,” the statement continued.

    Background

The Majority in Parliament has announced its readiness to introduce the Free Senior High School Bill, which aims to institutionalize the free SHS policy, ensuring its continuity across successive governments. Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin revealed at a press briefing on June 11, 2024, that the Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei-Adutwum, has finalized the bill for presentation.

The initiative is designed to safeguard the policy against potential abolition by future administrations. Afenyo-Markin emphasized, “If we consider it [Free SHS bill] as a House, what that means is that it becomes mandatory for governments to implement this.”

“Unless it is repealed, no government would have the right to say, I am not going to enforce Free SHS because now it is law, so if you fail, a citizen can apply to the court as his bona fide and the court can exact justice in that citizen’s favour,” he added.

As the debate unfolds, NAGRAT insists on the necessity for comprehensive consultations to ensure that any new legislation benefits from the insights and expertise of all relevant stakeholders, particularly those directly involved in the education sector.

TESCON members allegedly attack Kwapong Hall JCR Executives

The Junior Common Room (JCR) executives of Kwapong Hall at the University of Ghana, Legon, have reported an alleged attack by members of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), the student wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The incident reportedly involved the NPP Vice Chairperson and the TESCON President.

According to the JCR executives, the TESCON members forcibly entered their office, where they allegedly assaulted the executives and caused significant property damage. The exact reason behind this alleged attack remains unclear.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, showing heated exchanges between the involved parties, with the situation almost escalating into physical confrontations.

The shocking footage has prompted widespread condemnation and calls for a thorough investigation to ascertain the facts and hold those responsible accountable.

  • Cross-examination of Richard Jakpa by Prosecution in ambulance case ends

Cross-examination of Richard Jakpa by Prosecution in ambulance case ends

On Tuesday, July 2, 2024, the prosecution, led by Attorney General Godfred Dame, concluded its cross-examination of Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ongoing trial regarding the controversial ambulance contract.

The highlights of the proceedings revealed several key points about the case.

During the cross-examination, Attorney General Dame questioned Jakpa about the €700,000 he admitted to receiving under the ambulance contract.

When asked how much his principal, Big Sea General Trading LLC, received as commission, Jakpa stated he could not provide that information, as he was not Big Sea.

The Attorney General suggested that if Jakpa, as an agent, received 28.7% of the payment (€700,000), then between him and Big Sea, approximately 50% of the payment made by the Ghanaian government was used up, leading to the failure to supply proper ambulances.

Jakpa refuted this claim, arguing that the contract had received the necessary approvals from both Cabinet and Parliament.

However, when pressed to show where either Cabinet or Parliament approved the contract with Big Sea, Jakpa was unable to do so. It was revealed that the approvals related to a proposed Stanbic Bank facility that was never utilized.

Jakpa further argued that he was neither the Minister of Health nor Finance and thus was not responsible for ensuring the contract was approved by the appropriate authorities.

The Attorney General pointed out that the contract with Big Sea required the supply of brand-new ambulances, not the conversion of vehicles into ambulances. Jakpa disputed this but could not identify any provision in the contract authorizing Big Sea to convert vehicles.

The prosecution highlighted that, in violation of the contract’s payment terms, Big Sea received payment from the NDC government before delivering the first batch of ambulances.

This was due to instructions from then-Deputy Finance Minister Hon. Ato Forson, who had established letters of credit without lawful authority.

Documentary evidence showed that Sherry Ayittey, the Minister of Health under the Mahama administration, had instructed Big Sea to halt the vehicle supply due to contractual issues and lack of funds to establish the letters of credit.

Her successor, Alex Segbefia, also complained about the vehicles, describing them as “ordinary vans” unfit for conversion into ambulances.

The court established that more than two years after the vehicles were delivered in December 2014, the NDC government had not converted them into ambulances before leaving office in 2017. The vehicles were left unused at the Airforce base due to their unsuitability for conversion.

Furthermore, it was revealed that Big Sea was only licensed to convert vehicles into ambulances by the ISO in April 2015, while the contract was signed in 2012, and the vehicles delivered in 2014. Jakpa was unable to provide documentation proving Big Sea was authorized to convert the vehicles at the time of the contract.

Jakpa claimed that legal advice from Hon. Dominic Ayine, then-Deputy Attorney General under the Mahama administration, validated the contract. However, when asked to read Ayine’s advice in court, Jakpa could not identify any part that instructed the Ministry of Health or the Ministry of Finance to establish the letters of credit for the ambulances.

The cross-examination revealed significant discrepancies in the handling of the ambulance contract and cast doubt on the legitimacy of the payments and approvals associated with it.

  • 17 NPP members who failed in their quest to becoming Bawumia’s running mate – Report

17 NPP members who failed in their quest to becoming Bawumia’s running mate – Report

In what appeared to be a closely watched contest within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh has emerged as the top choice for running mate in the upcoming December 7 general elections.

This decision comes after a competitive process involving nearly 20 potential candidates.

Among the contenders were notable figures who are said to have been actively lobbying, either directly or indirectly, for the position.

Ultimately, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, affectionately known as Napo, secured the top spot. Several factors contributed to his selection: his resourcefulness, his ability to stand firm against the opposition, and his deep understanding of grassroots politics. Napo is also praised for his leadership skills, generosity, and unwavering loyalty to the party.

Surveys conducted on the candidates in contention consistently showed that Matthew Opoku Prempeh was the best option.

EC puts up voter transfer centres on university campuses

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced a crucial initiative to facilitate voter transfers for students ahead of the upcoming general elections scheduled for December 7, 2024.

This move aims to enable students who wish to vote at their campuses to transfer their votes from their original registration locations.

According to the EC, the voter transfer exercise will take place from Wednesday, July 3rd to July 5th, 2024, specifically on school campuses across Ghana.

This initiative comes in response to the advocacy of student groups and aims to ensure that students have convenient access to participate in the electoral process.

President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh, expressed appreciation to the EC for accommodating the transfer requests and for setting up dedicated voter transfer centres across various campuses.

He urged all Ghanaian students to take advantage of this opportunity by visiting the voter transfer centres with their identification cards for verification and activation of the transfer process.

Kyeremeh emphasized that the voter transfers are restricted to the constituency where each student’s school is located, ensuring adherence to electoral regulations.

He also highlighted ongoing efforts by NUGS to address challenges faced by Ghanaian students studying abroad, particularly concerning delays in the disbursement of stipends.

“We are actively engaged with the Office of the Chief of Staff, the Education Minister, and the Scholarship Secretariat to find lasting solutions to the issues affecting our students abroad,” Kyeremeh stated. He noted specific challenges faced by students in Morocco and Europe, assuring that measures are being implemented to resolve these issues promptly.

The voter transfer initiative by the EC is expected to enhance student participation in the electoral process, ensuring that their voices are heard in the upcoming elections.

Students are encouraged to utilize this opportunity to make their electoral choices effectively and responsibly.

Don’t believe everything you read on social media without proof – Netizen on Chef Smith’s GWR hoax

A Ugandan food vendor who attempted the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon, Dorcus Basheba, also known as Mama D, has reacted to the hoax involving Ghanaian Chef Smith who claimed to have broken the world record.

Chef Smith made the announcement during a press conference at La Palm Hotel in Accra on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

He declared himself the new Guinness World Record title holder for the longest individual cooking marathon, claiming to have achieved a time of 802 hours and 25 minutes.

“I am deeply humbled and honoured to announce that I am now the new world record holder for the cook-a-thon,” Chef Smith proclaimed during the conference.

But Guinness World Records (GWR) has refuted Ghanaian chef Chef Smith’s claim of holding the longest cooking marathon title, declaring the certificate he presented as fake.

Madalyn Bielfield, the PR Manager for Guinness World Records, confirmed that the current record holder is Alan Fisher from Ireland, not Chef Smith.

“No, this is not true at all. He does not hold the GWR title and that is not our certificate,” Bielfield stated, affirming the doubts raised by many regarding the authenticity of the certificate displayed by Chef Smith.

Reacting to this, Mama D, the founder of mama d’skeytchen, has urged people not to “believe everything you read on social media without proof.”

She added, “I await my feedback from @GWR , until then…”.

She attempted the GWR attempt on 23rd December 2023. She cooked for 121 hours.
