We must prevent what happened in Kenya from taking place in Ghana – Bagbin to MPs

Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has issued a stern warning to Ghanaian leaders, drawing attention to recent events in Kenya as a crucial lesson ahead of the upcoming December 7 elections.

The Kenyan government recently faced significant protests, particularly from young people, resulting in the withdrawal of a contentious financial bill aimed at increasing revenue. The protests included an incident where the parliament was attacked, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Speaker Bagbin highlighted parallels between the Kenyan context and Ghana’s political landscape, urging all leaders, especially Members of Parliament, to prioritize the principles of free, fair, and transparent elections.

In a proactive move to ensure a peaceful electoral process, Bagbin has initiated discussions with key stakeholders. This includes engaging with the Electoral Commission and the National Commission for Civic Education, as well as seeking the counsel of traditional authorities and the Chief Justice.

Additionally, Bagbin intends to hold discussions with President Akufo-Addo to underscore the critical need for violence-free elections in Ghana.

Speaking to journalists in Kumasi, Bagbin emphasized the necessity of preemptive measures to safeguard Ghana’s democracy ahead of the 2024 elections. He stressed the importance of vigilance and proactive steps to forestall any potential unrest or electoral irregularities.

“People often take things for granted, including my fellow Parliamentarians. However, the events unfolding in Kenya and Tanzania should serve as a wake-up call for us in Ghana. We must take preemptive actions to prevent such occurrences. Our goal is to ensure that the rightful leader chosen by Ghanaians assumes office without any ambiguity,” Bagbin asserted.

He reassured the public that his actions would be guided by the principles of impartiality and non-partisanship to uphold the integrity of the electoral process in Ghana.

GSA manhunts cement factories using inferior materials

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) is set to take decisive action against cement manufacturing firms producing substandard products, aiming to safeguard consumers under the Ghana Standards Authority Act 2022.

Currently, Ghana hosts only 14 licensed cement factories, but concerns over quality have prompted the GSA to intensify its scrutiny.

Director General Prof. Alex Dodoo highlighted that some manufacturers have resorted to using inferior materials to cut costs, a practice deemed unacceptable by the authority.

“Our research indicates that certain manufacturers are compromising on cement quality to gain a competitive edge,” Prof. Dodoo emphasized in an interview with JoyNews.

“We have already shut down three such operations, and more closures are imminent. Quality is non-negotiable for us.”

Prof. Dodoo, who also chairs the Cement Manufacturing Development Committee tasked with regulating pricing frameworks, underscored the need for transparency in the industry.

He explained that proposed legislation aims to ensure openness in cement pricing, addressing key cost components like clinker, energy, and exchange rates.

“All stakeholders agree on the importance of transparency,” Prof. Dodoo stated. “Our goal is to promote fairness in pricing, and cement manufacturers have signaled their readiness to engage constructively on necessary tax reviews.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Dawson Amoah, CEO of the Cement Manufacturers Association, expressed readiness for dialogue on pricing regulations. He acknowledged the impact of price increases on consumers and urged for collaborative efforts to stabilize cement prices.

“As manufacturers, we understand the consumer’s perspective and the challenges of price adjustments,” Dr. Amoah remarked. “We advocate for dialogue over immediate regulatory actions, aiming to achieve price stability through mutual understanding.”

2024 election victory will not come from the court – NDC

General-Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has affirmed the party’s determination to secure victory in the upcoming 2024 general election through grassroots mobilization rather than relying on legal challenges.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Mr Kwetey emphasized the NDC’s strategy to harness the skills of dedicated party members, particularly well-trained polling agents who are committed to upholding integrity and resisting bribery during the electoral process.

“We are not depending on the courts this time around,” Kwetey stated, echoing sentiments expressed by the party’s flag bearer, John Dramani Mahama.

“Our approach is to deploy competent polling agents and ensure meticulous result collation at every level of the party machinery.”

He called for the Electoral Commission (EC) to uphold neutrality and oversee a transparent electoral process that allows Ghanaians to freely choose their leaders without bias toward any political party.

“The role of the EC is to ensure fairness, not to influence election outcomes,” Kwetey emphasized. “They must assure Ghanaians of their impartiality and refrain from actions that could favor any party’s electoral prospects.”

Highlighting the stakes of the upcoming elections, Kwetey framed it as a pivotal moment for Ghana’s future, urging unity among party members and voters alike.

“This election is not just about the NDC; it’s a battle for the soul and future of our country,” he asserted. “We must unite to remove the current administration, which we accuse of economic mismanagement, corruption, and other malpractices.”

Kwetey stressed the importance of prioritizing national interests over personal agendas, urging unwavering loyalty to both the party and the nation.

“This is the time for unity and steadfast loyalty,” he concluded.

“We must place the greater good of our party and country above individual ambitions as we work towards a decisive victory.”

I’m yet to be served after countless threats – Ablakwa on Blay family’s defamation suit

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, remains defiant in the face of defamation lawsuits filed against him by former NPP Chairman Freddie Blay and his son, Kwame Blay, as he revealed he is yet to receive formal notification despite weeks of verbal warnings.

“They say better late than never — even though I am yet to be served, this is great news after many weeks of countless threats,” Ablakwa remarked in his post on social media.

The lawsuits allege that Ablakwa falsely implicated the Blay family in the alleged theft of state property, a charge he vehemently denies.

The North Tongu MP underscored his determination to contest the accusations, particularly regarding the dispute over the Labadi Beach Hotel’s beachfront.

“The battle to reclaim Labadi Beach Hotel’s beachfront just got exciting,” he declared, hinting at his readiness to engage in legal proceedings to defend his position.

Ablakwa also took a swipe at the timing of the lawsuits, insinuating a strategic element behind their filing.

“Justice does not always belong to those who are first to seek refuge in the courts — if you doubt this, ask the double identity champion,” he asserted, alluding to perceived political tactics.

Kwame Blay’s lawsuit specifically targets Ablakwa, denying any involvement in the alleged land theft or conspiracies against individuals connected to his family’s business interests. He emphasized the detrimental impact of Ablakwa’s statements on his personal reputation and business dealings.

In a broader legal front, Freddie Blay’s lawsuit extends beyond Ablakwa to include Media General and journalist Johnnie Hughes as additional defendants. Freddie Blay accuses Ablakwa of maliciously damaging his longstanding reputation, particularly given the timing close to electoral cycles.

Great news, better late than never – Ablakwa jabs Blay family over defamation suit

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has issued a robust response to defamation lawsuits filed against him by former NPP Chairman Freddie Blay and his son, Kwame Blay.

The lawsuits allege that Ablakwa falsely implicated them in the alleged theft of state property.

In a statement shared on social media, Mr Ablakwa expressed his reaction to the legal actions initiated against him, taking a jab at the timing of the lawsuits after weeks of threats.

He emphasized, “They say better late than never — even though I am yet to be served, this is great news after many weeks of countless threats.”

Ablakwa’s post alluded to the ongoing dispute over the Labadi Beach Hotel’s beachfront, hinting at his determination to fight the accusations in court.

He asserted, “The battle to reclaim Labadi Beach Hotel’s beachfront just got exciting. Justice does not always belong to those who are first to seek refuge in the courts — if you doubt this, ask the double identity champion.”

The North Tongu MP appeared undeterred by the legal challenges, stating defiantly, “No matter the intimidation theatrics, State Capture shall surely be defeated!”

Kwame Blay, in his lawsuit, specifically targets Ablakwa, asserting his innocence and denying any involvement in the alleged land theft or schemes against individuals linked to his brother’s businesses. He emphasized that Ablakwa’s allegations have severely impacted his business and personal reputation.

Meanwhile, Freddie Blay’s lawsuit extends beyond Ablakwa to include Media General and journalist Johnnie Hughes as additional defendants. Freddie Blay accuses Ablakwa of making malicious claims aimed at damaging his well-established reputation, particularly given the timing close to elections.

He further alleges that Media General and Johnnie Hughes amplified these false accusations during a broadcast, presenting them as facts and exacerbating the harm to his reputation.

  • Jude Bellingham sustains England’s Euro dreams after late victory against Slovakia

Jude Bellingham sustains England’s Euro dreams after late victory against Slovakia

Jude Bellingham delivered a moment of sheer brilliance to rescue England from the brink of elimination and secure a dramatic victory over Slovakia in Euro 2024, propelling them into the quarter-finals.

Facing a daunting deficit late in the game, England looked set to suffer a humiliating exit as Slovakia clung to a 1-0 lead secured by Ivan Schranz’s clinical finish in the 25th minute. The Slovakian defense had frustrated England throughout, limiting them to few clear chances.

However, it was Bellingham, celebrating his 21st birthday, who emerged as the hero for the Three Lions. In a display of audacious skill, he executed an exquisite overhead kick from Marc Guehi’s flicked header, stunning Slovakia and leveling the score in dramatic fashion.

Bellingham’s goal not only revived England‘s hopes but also injected newfound energy and belief into Gareth Southgate’s side. Just minutes into extra time, Harry Kane capitalized on England’s momentum with a close-range header, completing the turnaround and sealing a 2-1 victory.

The win sets up a tantalizing quarter-final clash with Switzerland, as England aim to build on their newfound resilience and momentum in the tournament.

Prior to Bellingham’s heroics, England had struggled to break down Slovakia’s resolute defense, with their performance drawing criticism for its lack of creativity and clinical edge. Despite efforts from Kane and Declan Rice hitting the woodwork, Slovakia appeared poised to cause a major upset.

Bellingham’s timely intervention not only saved England from potential humiliation but also sparked celebrations among fans who had endured a tense and disappointing match until that point.

Manager Gareth Southgate, who has faced scrutiny over team selection and tactics throughout Euro 2024, will now face further challenges as he prepares to navigate the quarter-finals without Marc Guehi. The defender, a standout performer despite the team’s struggles, will be suspended following his second yellow card in the match against Slovakia.

Guehi’s absence will undoubtedly be felt, especially given his composed presence alongside John Stones in defense. His performance, marred only by the lapse that led to Slovakia’s goal, underscored his importance to England’s backline.

As England reflect on their narrow escape and prepare to face a formidable Swiss side, questions linger about their ability to sustain their newfound momentum and improve upon their inconsistent performances thus far in the tournament.

The stage is now set for England to prove their mettle against Switzerland, with hopes resting on Bellingham’s heroics to serve as a turning point in their Euro 2024 campaign.

Wontumi and Napo make peace after intervention by Bawumia – Sources

Vice President and presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 elections, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, is said to have successfully mediated a longstanding dispute between Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Wontumi), the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, and Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo), Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and Minister for Energy.

The tensions between Wontumi and Napo within the NPP’s Ashanti Region, which included disagreements over party matters and Napo’s potential nomination as Bawumia’s running mate, have been effectively resolved, sources say.

This reconciliation effort was part of broader consultations undertaken by Dr Bawumia in preparation for announcing his running mate.

According to reports from Asaase Radio, Dr Bawumia convened a meeting at his official residence, attended by Wontumi, Napo, Nana Nkansah Boadu, and other senior party members.

The discussions, conducted in a constructive atmosphere, resulted in the resolution of all outstanding issues between the two influential NPP leaders.

Sources familiar with the negotiations confirmed that both Wontumi and Napo have committed to putting aside their differences and rallying behind Dr Bawumia’s leadership.

This unity paves the way for Dr Bawumia to present Napo as his nominee for running mate to the NPP’s national council, scheduled for endorsement on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

Once officially endorsed by the national council, Dr Bawumia is expected to formally announce Napo as his running mate in early July.

Nico Williams scored stunner as Spain set up a blockbuster quarter-final qualification

Spain secured a thrilling quarter-final spot in Euro 2024 by overcoming a spirited Georgia side, setting up an eagerly anticipated clash with hosts Germany.

In their first major tournament, Georgia initially surprised the spectators at Cologne Stadium by taking an unexpected lead.

Spain’s Robin le Normand inadvertently turned Otar Kakabadze’s curling cross into his own net after 18 minutes, completing a swift counter-attack that silenced the Spanish supporters. Georgia’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia led the exuberant celebrations with his teammates.

The goal injected confidence into the Georgian side, but Spain’s relentless pressure eventually paid off. Manchester City’s Rodri equalized with a precise shot into the bottom corner, beating Georgia’s standout goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Spain’s attacking prowess continued to shine as they created numerous chances. Fabian Ruiz capitalized on a cross from 16-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal, heading it in to give Spain the lead. Despite Georgia’s valiant efforts, including a near-miss from Kvaratskhelia, who almost scored from the halfway line, Spain’s composed possession game took control.

Nico Williams then added to Spain’s tally with a powerful strike into the roof of the net, followed by a precise finish from Dani Olmo, capping off a commanding performance.

Spain’s flawless group stage performance, where they won all three matches without conceding a goal, made them heavy favorites for this knockout tie. Despite an early setback, Luis de la Fuente’s squad demonstrated their resilience and creativity, reinforcing their status as tournament favorites.

The win sets up a high-stakes quarter-final against Germany in Stuttgart on Friday. “This is the path we are in. Germany at home will be very strong, but we have no fear,” said Rodri. “I’m sure they will be worried about us too. We are here to try to win, not just to play well or give a good image.”

Georgia’s journey in Euro 2024, their debut major tournament, was nothing short of a fairytale. Manager Willy Sagnol, a former Bayern Munich and France full-back, urged his team to show no fear, and they delivered with fearless dribbling and counter-attacking flair.

Goalkeeper Mamardashvili’s outstanding performance kept Georgia in the game for over 50 minutes until Ruiz’s header put Spain ahead. Kvaratskhelia, providing stardust in attack, almost pulled off the goal of the tournament.

Georgia’s spirited performance earned respect from their opponents, with their supporters staying behind after the match to applaud their team.

“Sometimes you need to take time to look at what you have done. We can be very happy,” said Sagnol.

“The evolution of the team has been absolutely fantastic. I’m very proud of that. Now it’s the end of our journey, but I’m sure the next one will be very exciting.”

Spain’s well-prepared squad, having had two extra days to rest and making 10 changes in their final group game, showed their strength as Georgia tired in the later stages.

Spain’s dominance and creativity ensured their place in the quarter-finals, while Georgia exits with heads held high after exceeding expectations.

IGP Dampare has not been directed to proceed on leave – Police

The Ghana Police Service has refuted claims that the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has been asked to proceed on leave, with his duties to be handed over to his deputy, Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

In a press statement dated June 30, the Police urged the public to disregard this “fake news and treat same with
    the contempt it deserves.”

“The Inspector-General of Police remains committed to his patriotic duty of leading the Ghana Police Service as per the mandate given him by the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” the statement added.

The claim, reported by Daily Guide on June 30, 2024, was said to be connected to the 2023 leaked tape scandal investigated by a parliamentary committee led by Samuel Atta Akyea, MP for Abuakwa South.

Another source cited allegations of insubordination as a reason for Dampare’s removal.

Meanwhile, the parliamentary committee investigating the leaked tape, which implicated senior police officers in a plot to remove IGP Dampare, has completed its inquiry.

The committee recommended disciplinary measures against three officers: COP Alex George Mensah, Supt. George Lysander Asare, and Supt. Emmanuel Eric Gyedi.

These officers were found to have violated police regulations and professional conduct codes, engaging in activities that could involve them in political disputes or misuse their positions.

The committee urged Parliament to inform President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of these findings, in line with Section 19 of the Police Service Act, 1970 (Act 350), which empowers the president to impose disciplinary sanctions.

The President’s decision is now awaited to address this breach of trust and protocol within the police ranks.

  • Cement prices to surge by GHC12 from July 1 – Reports

Cement prices to surge by GHC12 from July 1 – Reports

Cement manufacturers in Ghana are said to have announced plans to raise prices, marking the second increase this year.

Dr. Stephen Debrah-Ablormeti, former Vice Chair of the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association, revealed that the price of cement, which had already gone up by GH₵10.00 in May, will see an additional increase of GH₵12.00 starting July 1.

Dr. Debrah-Ablormeti explained that cement manufacturers communicated their decision to hike prices just days ago.

“Effective July 1, the price of cement will rise once again,” he said.

He emphasized the significant impact this increase will have on construction costs.

“Given that cement accounts for approximately 70% of building materials, an increase in cement prices leads to a corresponding rise in the cost of blocks, concrete, and plastering materials,” he noted.

“A project that starts in January can experience a 30-45% cost increase by December due to these price hikes.”

In addition to the rising cement prices, Dr. Debrah-Ablormeti highlighted that the cost of iron rods has also surged by 28% over the past two months.

This further exacerbates the financial burden on developers.

“Managing costs as developers is becoming increasingly challenging. We support the efforts of the Honorable Minister to address this issue and create a fair competitive environment in the market,” he stated.

In response to the situation, Trade and Industry Minister K.T. Hammond has announced his intention to proceed with the implementation of a legislative instrument (L.I.) designed to regulate cement prices in Ghana.

Despite a petition from the Chamber of Cement Manufacturers to delay the law, K.T. Hammond remains steadfast. He stressed the importance of the law in preventing exploitation by a cartel of manufacturers. A

ccording to the proposed L.I., violations by cement manufacturers could result in up to three years of imprisonment.

The move has faced opposition from the Minority in Parliament and various interest groups. Nevertheless, K.T. Hammond is determined to enforce the regulation to ensure fair pricing and protect consumers.

Don’t sleep before and after Dec. 7, even their members are suspicious – Bridget Otoo to NDC

Media personality, Bridget Otoo, has advised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to be weary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the country prepares to head to the polls.

She offered her counsel after reports that a group of young supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stood watch at the Walewale Police Station on Wednesday to protect ballot boxes holding votes from the constituency’s primary on January 27, 2024.

During the primary, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Walewale, Lariba Zuweira Abudu, was defeated by 35-year-old Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru. Dr. Kabiru secured 345 votes compared to Hajia Zuweira’s 338 votes.

Following her defeat, Hajia Zuweira contested the announced results at the High Court in Tamale.

The vigilant youth claimed that the NPP’s North East Regional Chairman and Hajia Zuweira were plotting to relocate the ballot boxes from the police station without proper authorization.

Reacting to this, Bridget Otoo noted that there is no trust within the ruling government, and the NDC must not rest on its oars to ensure the 2024 election is credible and fair, without any form of manipulation of results.

“Their own party. Dear NDC you cannot sleep before and after December 7.”

On Monday, June 24, the High Court in Tamale issued an injunction against Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru, prohibiting him from presenting himself as the duly elected NPP parliamentary candidate for Walewale.

Nurein Shiabu Migyimah, the suspended Parliamentary Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Assin Central constituency in the Central Region, is challenging claims of immoral acts and anti-party conduct that led to the withdrawal of his candidature and a six-month suspension.

The Central Regional Secretariat of the NDC recently announced the withdrawal of Migyimah’s candidature for the 2024 general elections on moral grounds.

Following complaints filed against him, the NDC’s Central Regional Functional Executive Committee conducted thorough investigations and deliberations, leading to the decision to withdraw his candidature immediately.

The committee has also communicated to the Assin Central Chairman of the NDC, informing him of Migyimah’s suspension for six months, pending further review and adjudication by the Regional Disciplinary Committee.

In an interview with Joy News’ Blessed Sogah, Migyimah expressed his confidence in being vindicated after undergoing the party’s review process.

“I believe, and I know whatever allegation, anything they’ve said or whatever it is, after I go through the right party structures, I’ll be vindicated. God being so good, God willing, ‘Inshallah’, on December 7, I’m going to win the election,” he stated.

Migyimah urged his supporters to remain calm as he works to resolve the matter through the proper channels within the NDC.

Although the Central Regional NDC claims to have served a formal notice of suspension, Migyimah insists he has yet to receive any official documentation detailing the allegations against him.

He maintains that he did not engage in the “immoral acts and anti-party conduct” alleged by the party’s Central Regional Wing.

The specifics of the alleged offences were not disclosed by the party, only mentioning that the decision was based on “immoral acts and anti-party conduct.”

Currently, the Assin Central seat is held by the New Patriotic Party’s Kennedy Agyapong. In the previous election, Migyimah secured 14,747 votes, representing 42.74% of the total, against Agyapong’s 19,754 votes, representing 57.26%.

The impact of this suspension on the political dynamics of the Assin Central constituency in the upcoming December elections remains to be seen.

  • Azumah Nelson Sports Complex in deplorable state over lack of maintenance

Azumah Nelson Sports Complex in deplorable state over lack of maintenance

The Azumah Nelson Sports Complex, situated in North Kaneshie, Accra, once a promising hub for sports and community activities, now stands in a state of disrepair following years of neglect by authorities and successive governments.

Originally part of a visionary plan to construct 10 Youth Resource Centers, including the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex, the facility was slated for completion in 2018 with an ambitious scope to host over 40 different sporting disciplines.

However, despite these aspirations, the complex remains largely unfinished and unusable.

Historically known as the Kaneshie Sports Complex, it dates back to the 1970s, a period under General Acheampong’s Supreme Military Council.

During its prime, the complex served as a crucial training ground for the Black Stars and other national teams, notably during the 1978 AFCON, which Ghana both hosted and triumphed in.

It also regularly hosted football matches for Accra Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics when the Accra Sports Stadium underwent reconstruction in 2007.

Despite its illustrious past, the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex has suffered from neglect, with successive governments failing to fulfill promises of renovation and modernization. The facility’s deterioration highlights a broader issue of inadequate maintenance and strategic investment in Ghana’s sports infrastructure.

In a promising turn of events in March 2018, former Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah initiated renovation efforts at the complex. However, progress has been slow, leaving the facility in a state that sports journalist Jerome Octhere describes as disrespectful to the legacy of boxing icon Azumah Nelson.

“It’s disheartening to see the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex in such neglect. This facility, with its potential to accommodate up to 5,000 spectators and offer amenities like a swimming pool, standard football pitch, basketball court, and ICT and entrepreneurship centers, could be a beacon for sports development and community engagement,” Octhere lamented.

Uruguay delivered a commanding performance in the Copa America, securing a resounding 5-0 victory against Bolivia, with Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez showcasing his prowess on the field.

The match, held in the United States, marked Uruguay’s second consecutive win in the tournament, positioning them strongly in their group standings.

The early stages of the game saw Manchester United’s Facundo Pellistri opening the scoring with a precise header in the eighth minute. Shortly after, Darwin Nunez extended Uruguay’s lead with his tenth goal in seven appearances for his country, demonstrating his consistent form and scoring prowess.

As the game progressed, winger Maximiliano Araujo added to Bolivia’s woes by scoring his second goal of the tournament, putting Uruguay firmly in control. Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde contributed to the goal fest with a clinical finish, followed by Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur sealing the victory with a powerful header.

Manager Marcelo Bielsa expressed cautious optimism about Uruguay’s performance, emphasizing that while the team has shown individual talent, there are still significant steps to take to reach their full potential. Bielsa highlighted the importance of maintaining focus and not drawing premature conclusions about the team’s capabilities.

Uruguay, currently ranked 14th in FIFA’s world rankings, has its sights set on securing a record 16th Copa America title. The team’s next challenge will be against the United States in their final Group C match, where a draw would ensure Uruguay’s top spot in the group standings.

The convincing victory against Bolivia underscores Uruguay’s formidable presence in the Copa America, with their attacking prowess and defensive solidity setting a strong foundation as they advance towards the knockout stages of the tournament.

  • 2024 Mid-Year budget review to be presented mid-July

2024 Mid-Year budget review to be presented mid-July

The Finance Minister of Ghana is set to present the 2024 Mid-Year Budget review, with potential dates being July 12th or 15th.

This announcement follows closely after the minister declared the completion of the country’s debt restructuring, a key requirement of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) conditionalities.

The exact date for the presentation is still to be confirmed, according to the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh.

Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, Annoh-Dompreh mentioned, “We will have a joint caucus meeting on Wednesday, the 3rd of July, as a preparation for the Finance Minister’s appearance.”

In light of recent developments, Ghana might soon regain access to international capital markets for new dollar borrowings.

This optimistic outlook is shared by several international investors and Eurobond holders, following the government’s successful negotiation of a deal to restructure approximately $13.1 billion in debt.

For the past two years, Ghana has been unable to tap into international markets for raising dollars due to escalating debt levels, sluggish economic growth, and a low balance of payments. The government was effectively excluded from these markets after it announced plans to restructure its debts owed to commercial creditors.

However, Eurobond holders have expressed a renewed sense of confidence, noting that the government is now implementing measures designed to safeguard investors’ funds. The successful conclusion of the debt restructuring is anticipated to restore market confidence and potentially reopen international borrowing avenues for Ghana.

As the Finance Minister prepares to deliver the mid-year budget review, the focus will likely be on consolidating the gains from the debt restructuring process and outlining strategies for economic stabilization and growth.

    Major shake-up in Majority caucus

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has announced a significant restructuring of the majority leadership, starting with the removal of Obuasi West MP Kwaku Kwarteng from his role as Chairman of the Finance Committee.

This change was disclosed on the floor of Parliament on Friday, June 28, catching many Majority MPs by surprise and causing some disappointment among them.

According to JoyNews, Mr Kwarteng will now serve as the Majority Spokesperson and Chairman of the newly established Economy Committee.

The Economy Committee, separated from the Finance Committee in the latest standing orders, possesses less authority compared to its predecessor but is expected to play a crucial role in parliamentary affairs.

Explaining the rationale behind this reshuffle, Afenyo-Markin highlighted Kwarteng’s capability to effectively counter the opposition’s stance on economic matters.

“We are challenging you to come up with your spokesperson on the economy. You have not said so officially, but we are going to make sure we have a spokesperson on the economy to challenge your Adonko. Hon Kwaku Kwarteng is going to face him directly on the Economy,” he stated.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized the significance of the newly formed Economy Committee, describing it as one of the most important committees in Parliament.

He noted, “I am letting them [Minority] know some of the proactive steps we have taken on this side of the House to throw a serious challenge that it is not just about governance. We have a new Economy Committee, and it is going to be the most important Committee in this House.”

65% of Ghanaian youth between the ages of 15 and 24 are unemployed – GNHDR report

The latest Ghana Human Development Report 2023 (GNHDR) has unveiled alarming statistics regarding youth unemployment in Ghana, highlighting significant challenges in the country’s workforce dynamics.

According to the report, a staggering 65% of young people aged between 15 and 24 are currently unemployed, posing a critical threat to Ghana’s future economic development.

Released on June 26, 2024, in Accra by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the Ghana Statistical Service and the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), the GNHDR underscores the stark reality faced by Ghanaian youth seeking stable and sustainable employment opportunities.

The report also reveals that a substantial 75% of Ghana’s workforce operates within the informal sector, where jobs are often characterized by instability and low wages. This informal sector dominance further exacerbates the employment challenges, particularly for young people striving to secure meaningful livelihoods.

During the report’s launch, Angela Lusigi, the UNDP Resident Representative in Ghana, emphasized the urgent need for strategic investments in human capital, infrastructure development, and technology. These investments, she noted, are crucial for creating an enabling environment that fosters sustainable job creation, especially targeting the youth demographic.

“Strategic investment in both human capital and infrastructure is crucial for Ghana to create a conducive environment for sustainable jobs for all,” Lusigi asserted.

Echoing these sentiments, Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim, the Government Statistician, stressed the importance of inclusive growth policies aimed at fostering sustainable job creation across various sectors of the economy.

“The report provides crucial insights. I urge stakeholders to adopt policies that foster inclusive growth and sustainable job creation,” Prof. Annim remarked.

Additionally, Kodjo Esseim Mensah-Abrampa, the Director-General of the NDPC, highlighted the imperative of formalizing the informal sector and streamlining regulatory frameworks to unlock the potential of Ghana’s entrepreneurial landscape.

“By investing in infrastructure and promoting entrepreneurship, Ghana can harness the potential of its youth and informal sector,” Mensah-Abrampa affirmed.

The GNHDR report also recommended integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEM/STEAM) subjects into education curricula and providing entrepreneurial training. These measures aim to equip Ghanaian youth with essential skills and knowledge necessary to navigate and thrive in the evolving job market.

Looking ahead, the report advocates for a comprehensive national long-term plan that prioritizes job creation, infrastructure development, and educational reform. These initiatives are pivotal in ensuring equitable access to decent work and improved living standards for all Ghanaians by 2030 and beyond.

Suspended NDC Assin Central PC impregnated party’s constituency secretary’s wife – Reports

Recent reports have revealed the purported reason behind the six-month suspension of Nurein Shiabu Migyimah, the Parliamentary Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Assin Central constituency in the Central Region.

Earlier reports could not point to the exact cause of the suspension, but a report by Ghananweb indicates that Migyimah has been suspended for impregnating the wife of Sadique Broni Yeboah, a married party member.

“The Regional FEC received credible reports of immoral acts and anti-party conduct against the party’s 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for the Assin Central Constituency, Nurien Shiabu Migyimah. It was revealed that he has impregnated the legally married wife of Comrade Sadique Broni Yeboah, resulting in her moving to a rented apartment in Kasoa, paid for by Nurien Shiabu Migyimah,” Ghanaweb quotes a part of a statement in its purview.

The Central Regional Secretariat of the NDC made the announcement of the suspension after receiving complaints against Migyimah. Following thorough investigations and discussions, the Regional Functional Executive Committee decided to withdraw his candidature.

They have communicated this decision to the Assin Central Chairman of the NDC, explaining that Migyimah’s suspension will remain in effect until the matter is reviewed and adjudicated by the Regional Disciplinary Committee.

“This immoral act by Nurien Shiabu Migyimah has had a traumatic psychological effect on the Assin Central Constituency Secretary, Comrade Sadique Broni Yeboah, affecting his performance as the Scribe of the Constituency,” the statement continued.

“After critically examining the revelations and facts that emerged from its investigation, the Regional FEC resolved that, in the best interest of the party, Nurien Shiabu Migyimah must be withdrawn as the 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for the Assin Central Constituency to safeguard the party’s image from further damage,” the statement concluded.

“It is in this light that we respectfully recommend the withdrawal of Nurien Shiabu Migyimah as the NDC’s 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for the Assin Central Constituency,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Joy News’ Blessed Sogah, Migyimah has expressed confidence in his eventual vindication.

“I believe, and I know whatever allegation, anything they’ve said or whatever it is, after I go through the right party structures, I’ll be vindicated. God being so good, God willing, ‘Inshallah’, on December 7, I’m going to win the election,” he stated.

He urged his supporters to remain calm and assured them that he is working to resolve the matter through the proper channels within the party.

  • Fuel prices to surge by over 2% in July – COPEC

Fuel prices to surge by over 2% in July – COPEC

The Chamber for Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has forecasted an increase in fuel prices for the first pricing window of July 2024.

According to COPEC, consumers should anticipate higher costs at the pumps for petrol, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) across the nation.

This projected price hike is attributed to the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar, with the exchange rate dropping from an average of $1:GH¢14.4788 to $1:GH¢15.2779, representing a 1.89% decrease.

COPEC’s analysis suggests that the retail price of petrol is likely to rise by 2.17%, pushing the current average pump price from GH¢14.17 per litre to approximately GH¢15.20 per litre.

Similarly, diesel prices are expected to increase to GH¢15.21 per litre. For LPG, consumers can expect prices to range between GH¢13.24 per kilogram and GH¢14.64 per kilogram.

In response to these anticipated increases, COPEC has called on the government to consider reducing taxes on LPG or implementing subsidies to make it more affordable and accessible. This measure, they argue, would encourage broader usage of LPG, helping to protect the environment by reducing reliance on firewood.

Additionally, COPEC has urged the government to expedite efforts to bring the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) back into full operation. This move is seen as critical to minimizing the importation of finished petroleum products, which are often associated with issues of fuel contamination.

These recommendations underscore COPEC’s broader appeal to the government to take proactive steps to stabilize fuel prices and ensure the sustainable development of the country’s energy sector.

  • BoG made a loss of GHC47bn in 2023, not GHC10bn – Adongo reveals

BoG made a loss of GHC47bn in 2023, not GHC10bn – Adongo reveals

Isaac Adongo, the Ranking Member of the Finance Committee of Parliament, has accused the Bank of Ghana (BoG) of falsifying figures related to the institution’s effectiveness.

According to him, the Central Bank is currently under-declaring the losses the institution had to incur in the previous year.

The Bank of Ghana has disclosed a significant financial loss of GH₵10.50 billion for the fiscal year ending 2023, marking a notable improvement from the GH₵60.9 billion loss reported in 2022. This financial setback is primarily attributed to a substantial rise in total interest expenses related to its open market operations, which surged by GH₵6.7 billion during the period under review.

According to the Bank’s 2023 Annual Report and Financial Statement, the increase in expenses was deemed necessary to manage the country’s excess liquidity and support the broader macroeconomic adjustment programme aimed at stabilizing inflation rates.

But Isaac Adongo believes a quadruple of the figure quoted by the Central Bank has been lost.

“I have reason to show to you that the Bank of Ghana is cooking the books. I held a press briefing in this room when I showed you that thee impairment of 48 billion last year, they wrote off 32 billion. They didn’t dispute it. So the impairment was 16 billion. In this report, in a note, you have stated that that impairment has increased from 16 billion to 53 billion. Is that not an impairment of 37 billion. And you write of impairment as expenditure. When you write off the expenditure, you will see that the Bank of Ghana made a loss of 47 billion, not 10 billion.”

He noted that he has received a copy of the Central Bank’s recent report after reaching out to the establishment.

Despite the incurred loss, the Bank of Ghana highlighted that its aggressive open market operations yielded positive results, contributing significantly to a notable slowdown in inflation to 23.2% by the end of 2023, down from a staggering 54.1% recorded at the close of 2022.

Total operating expenses for 2023 were reported at GH₵19.2 billion, showcasing a significant decrease from the GH₵66.9 billion recorded in the previous year. This reduction was attributed to lower impairment charges on loans and advances, as well as adjustments in the Bank’s holdings of Government of Ghana securities.

As of December 31, 2023, the Bank of Ghana and its subsidiaries reported total liabilities surpassing total assets by GH₵65.36 billion. The institution also clarified that no funds were allocated for reserve appropriation, given the reserve amount remained in deficit at the end of the financial year.

In addressing policy solvency concerns, the Bank assured stakeholders of its ability to generate sufficient realized income to cover the costs associated with its monetary policy operations. The Board of Directors and Management reaffirmed that the policy solvency outcome for 2023 aligns with the strategic objectives outlined in the previous fiscal year.

You can’t describe Napo in such an “unacceptable manner” – Majority Leader to Andy Appiah-Kubi

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has intervened in a recent internal party strife within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the selection of a running mate for the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Addressing the controversy sparked by Asante Akim North MP Andy Appiah-Kubi’s remarks regarding the potential selection of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh as Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate, Afenyo-Markin stressed unity and mutual respect among party members.

“We should all respect party rules. You cannot go out of your way to describe your colleague in an unacceptable manner,” he asserted, highlighting the importance of measured language in intra-party discussions.

The Asante Akim North MP had expressed reservations about Dr Opoku Prempeh’s acceptability across the NPP base, particularly among MPs, suggesting potential challenges in his ability to effectively campaign and secure votes in various constituencies.

Afenyo-Markin, while acknowledging diverse opinions within the party, reiterated his confidence in the NPP’s leadership and decision-making processes, particularly regarding the selection of a running mate.

“The flagbearer, Dr Bawumia, has the confidence of the party and I believe he will use the structures of the party in making his decisions,” Afenyo-Markin affirmed, underlining the role of established party structures in guiding such crucial decisions.

  • All is not well internally, we must unite – CPP

All is not well internally, we must unite – CPP

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) is facing internal challenges that may affect its participation in the upcoming 2024 general elections, according to Sylvester Sarpong-Soprano, the party’s Director of Communications.

In a recent interview with Citi FM, Sarpong-Soprano expressed concerns over the party’s internal conflicts, suggesting that these issues could potentially prevent the CPP from fielding a presidential candidate.

Sarpong-Soprano underscored the critical need for unity within the CPP, emphasizing that resolving internal disagreements is paramount to effectively positioning the party against major political rivals like the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He acknowledged that without unity, the CPP would struggle to mount a credible challenge for political power in the upcoming elections.

The Director of Communications highlighted ongoing disruptions caused by internal factions and the interference of certain elders within the party. He pointed out that these factors have led to multiple court cases over the past four years, each averaging between eight to ten months before resolution.

Such protracted legal battles, Sarpong-Soprano argued, have significantly hindered the CPP’s progress and organizational effectiveness.

Despite these challenges, Sarpong-Soprano expressed optimism about the potential for unity within the CPP at this juncture.

He called upon party members to come together and address these internal rifts decisively, suggesting that a united front is essential for the CPP to present itself as a viable alternative to Ghanaian voters disillusioned with the current political landscape dominated by the NDC and NPP.

“I am committed to telling the full truth about the CPP so that we can get support and help to revamp,” Sarpong-Soprano stated candidly. He emphasized the importance of transparency in communicating the CPP’s current state to the electorate, eschewing empty propaganda in favor of a realistic assessment of the party’s challenges and opportunities.

  • Highlights from Day 3 of cross-examination in ambulance case

Highlights from Day 3 of cross-examination in ambulance case

Day 3 of the ongoing cross-examination in the high-profile ambulance procurement trial brought forth a series of compelling developments, underscoring the intricacies of the legal battle and the gravity of the accusations faced by Richard Jakpa, the third accused.

The proceedings on June 27, 2024, were marked by heightened tension and rigorous exchanges as new prosecutors took the stand to interrogate Jakpa, adding layers of complexity to an already charged courtroom atmosphere.

    Confrontation by Dual Prosecutors

One of the standout moments of the day was Jakpa being confronted successively by two prosecutors. Initially cross-examined by Deputy Attorney-General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, the session delved into Jakpa’s military background and the circumstances of his departure from the Armed Forces in 2007. A pivotal moment arose when the prosecution introduced what they claimed to be a crucial dismissal letter, alleging unsatisfactory conduct.

Despite objections from the defense, the court ultimately admitted the letter as evidence, citing legal provisions related to personal knowledge and official records. Jakpa, however, vehemently denied familiarity with the document, challenging its authenticity during and after the proceedings.

    Dame’s Intensive Inquiry

Later in the day, Attorney-General Godfred Dame took charge of the prosecution, intensifying the scrutiny on Jakpa regarding critical aspects of the case. Focus shifted to the authorization of Letters of Credit (LCs) between the Government of Ghana and Big Sea, a pivotal point aimed at establishing Jakpa’s alleged involvement as a primary beneficiary in the controversial contract.

The cross-examination also delved into the specifics of Big Sea’s International Standard Organization (ISO) certification status, with conflicting interpretations emerging between Jakpa and the prosecution. The Attorney-General’s line of questioning sought to clarify discrepancies and bolster the prosecution’s case with concrete evidence.

    Ethical Allegations and Security Measures

Amidst the legal drama, Jakpa made startling allegations against Attorney-General Dame, accusing him of coercing Jakpa into fabricating a medical excuse to evade court appearances. Jakpa asserted that despite his good health, he was pressured by Dame to obtain a false medical exemption, ostensibly to manipulate legal proceedings in favor of the prosecution.

The courtroom atmosphere was further heightened by tightened security measures. Reports indicated an increased presence of National Security operatives alongside regular police details, responding to concerns over the unauthorized dissemination of court proceedings recordings on social media platforms like WhatsApp.

    Conclusion

As the trial progresses, each day unfolds with new revelations and challenges, highlighting the complexity and significance of the allegations surrounding the ambulance procurement scandal. With each session, the legal teams strive to unravel the truth amidst allegations of misconduct, strategic maneuvers, and the pursuit of justice in a case that has captured national attention.

The next steps in the trial remain critical, as stakeholders and the public await further developments that could potentially reshape the landscape of Ghana’s legal and political spheres.

According to a press release from the CSA, they have received approximately 130 complaints from victims who fell prey to unauthorized loan apps operating without approval from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the Data Protection Commission.

The modus operandi of these fraudulent apps typically involves luring users with small initial credits, often less than GHS 200, directly deposited into their mobile money wallets upon installation, even without a loan request.

Subsequently, within a week of disbursing the loan, cybercriminals resort to extortion tactics.

These tactics include demanding repayment with exorbitant interest rates, threatening to publish real or fabricated compromising photos on social media, and intimidating victims by labeling them as criminals.

“Even after victims comply with repayment demands, some fraudsters persist in extorting additional payments,” the CSA revealed. It was highlighted that victims inadvertently grant these apps access to their personal data such as contacts, photos, and personally identifiable information (PII) like Ghana card IDs during the app installation process.

Among the identified loan apps flagged by the CSA are Ahomka Loan, Antcredit, Beanloan, Bestloan, BezoMoney, Boomloan, Casharrow, Cashwave, Cmgh Loan, Cosycredit, Credit Bag, Divacash, Express Loan, Five Loan, FullCredit, Homecredit, and Unik Credit, among others.

These apps have been found to operate in violation of the Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions Act, 2016 (Act 930), as per the Bank of Ghana’s notice BG/GOV/SEC/2022/10.

Furthermore, the CSA emphasized that the owners of these apps have not met the compliance requirements stipulated by the Data Protection Commission (DPC), thus infringing upon the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843) through unauthorized access and use of users’ data and PII.

In light of these alarming developments, the CSA urged the general public to refrain from using these unauthorized loan apps and advised immediate reporting of any cybersecurity or cybercrime incidents to the Authority.

They underscored the importance of vigilance and caution when engaging with digital lending platforms to mitigate risks associated with cyberbullying and data privacy breaches.

  • US Soccer condemns racist abuse against players following Copa America defeat

US Soccer condemns racist abuse against players following Copa America defeat

The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) has strongly condemned the racist online abuse directed at several of its players after a 2-1 loss to Panama in the Copa America.

Monaco striker Folarin Balogun, Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards, and Juventus duo Timothy Weah and Weston McKennie were all targeted with discriminatory messages following the Group C match held in Atlanta.

Timothy Weah, 24, was particularly under scrutiny after receiving a straight red card in the 18th minute for an off-the-ball altercation with Panama’s Roderick Miller, an incident that he later described as a “moment of frustration” and for which he apologized to his teammates.

In a statement released on X, the USSF expressed firm opposition to such behavior, stating, “There is absolutely no place in the game for such hateful and discriminatory behavior. These actions are not only unacceptable but also contrary to the values of respect and inclusivity that we uphold as an organization.”

Despite the numerical disadvantage following Weah’s dismissal, the US team initially took the lead at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium courtesy of a stunning goal by Folarin Balogun, his fifth goal in 14 appearances for the national team. However, Panama equalized just four minutes later through Cesar Blackman’s strike from outside the box.

Panama, ranked 43rd in the FIFA world rankings, capitalized on their advantage in the latter stages of the game, with Jose Fajardo scoring the winning goal seven minutes from time. Panama’s victory was tempered by Adalberto Carrasquilla’s red card for a reckless challenge on US winger Christian Pulisic shortly before full-time.

With the defeat, the US, currently ranked 11th globally, now faces a critical final group match against Uruguay on July 2nd. Both teams are level on points with Panama, but the US holds a superior goal difference. To advance to the knockout stage, the US must match Panama’s result against Bolivia.

The USSF, which will co-host the 2026 men’s World Cup with Canada and Mexico, remains focused on progressing in the Copa America while continuing to advocate for respect and inclusivity in soccer, reaffirming its commitment to combating all forms of discrimination within the sport.

  • Nurein Shiabu suspended from NDC, loses Assin Central PC role

Nurein Shiabu suspended from NDC, loses Assin Central PC role

The Central Regional Secretariat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced the withdrawal of Nurein Shiabu Migyimah as the party’s Assin Central Parliamentary Candidate.

This decision comes amidst complaints and allegations against Migyimah, prompting the NDC’s Central Regional Functional Executive Committee to take swift action.

Following exhaustive investigations and deliberations, the Regional Functional Executive Committee opted to withdraw Migyimah’s candidature on moral grounds.

A formal communication has been sent to the Assin Central Chairman of the NDC, notifying him of Migyimah’s suspension from the party for a period of six months.

This suspension is pending further review and adjudication by the Regional Disciplinary Committee, marking a temporary halt to his political aspirations under the NDC banner.

While specifics of Migyimah’s alleged offenses were not detailed by the party, the NDC cited “immoral acts and anti-party conduct” as the basis for their decision.

The withdrawal of Migyimah as a candidate raises questions about the future dynamics of the Assin Central constituency, which is currently held by the New Patriotic Party’s Kennedy Agyapong.

In the previous election, Migyimah garnered 14,747 votes, representing 42.74% of the total votes cast, against Kennedy Agyapong’s 19,754 votes, which accounted for 57.26%. With Migyimah’s removal from the electoral race, the implications for the upcoming December elections remain uncertain, as the NDC seeks to realign its strategy in Assin Central.

“Operation Own Your Business”: Alan promises to create 3 million jobs

Alan Kyerematen, the leader and founder of the Movement for Change, has announced an ambitious plan to create three million jobs for Ghanaian youth through an initiative dubbed “Operation Own Your Business.”

This proposal, which is part of his campaign for the December 7 presidential elections, focuses on empowering young graduates to become entrepreneurs.

Central to Kyerematen’s strategy is the provision of financial support to graduates, enabling them to start their own businesses.

He emphasized the critical role of entrepreneurship in driving economic growth and job creation, asserting that this initiative will unlock the potential of young Ghanaians.

“Empowering our youth to become business owners is essential for the economic future of our nation,” Kyerematen stated.

In addition to financial support for new businesses, Kyerematen proposed a compulsory apprenticeship and training programme for every Senior High School graduate.

This initiative aims to equip young people with essential skills through at least six months of training before they graduate, preparing them for the job market or entrepreneurial ventures.

“Our youth need the right skills to succeed in today’s competitive job market, and this training will provide them with a solid foundation,” he said.

Addressing national security concerns, Kyerematen pledged to offer free military, police, and security service training to graduates who choose to join Ghana’s security reserves.

This initiative not only aims to strengthen national security capabilities but also provides valuable career opportunities for young people interested in public service.

“By offering this training, we are ensuring that our youth have the opportunity to serve their country while gaining valuable skills,” Kyerematen noted.

Kyerematen also highlighted his plan to tackle unemployment in the health sector by establishing community hospitals owned and operated by the private sector and healthcare workers.

This approach aims to provide quality healthcare for all Ghanaians while creating job opportunities for health professionals. “By establishing community hospitals, we are addressing health sector unemployment and ensuring quality care for every Ghanaian,” he posted.

Be quick in completing stalled hospital projects – Asantehene tells Health Minister

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has voiced concerns over the slow progress of several hospital projects in Ghana, particularly those in the Ashanti Region.

He has urged for expedited efforts to complete these projects to ensure the health and well-being of the people.

During a meeting with a delegation from the Ministry of Health, led by the sector Minister, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, the Asantehene stressed the importance of prioritizing health infrastructure.

He emphasized that although funds may be limited, the government must strive to do its best to ensure that health facilities are completed and operational to serve the needs of the population.

The Asantehene acknowledged recent improvements in the financial sector and recommended that the Ministry of Health collaborate with the Ministry of Finance to secure funding for completing hospital projects across the country, specifically those under the Agenda 111 initiative.

He pointed out that securing the necessary funds and completing these projects on schedule is crucial for enhancing healthcare delivery and ensuring the health and well-being of the people.

Particular concern was expressed over the stalled Sewua Hospital project. The Asantehene noted that despite significant investments in hospital equipment, the facility remains non-operational due to issues such as inadequate power supply and poor road infrastructure.

He warned that if these issues are not addressed promptly, the equipment will become obsolete and wasted.

Highlighting the potential benefits of operationalizing the Sewua Hospital, the Asantehene mentioned that it could alleviate the patient load on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), aiding the smooth implementation of the ‘Heal the KATH’ project.

He also called for the expedited completion of the KNUST Teaching Hospital and emphasized the importance of ongoing projects at Trede.

In response, Dr. Okoe-Boye praised the Asantehene for his ‘Heal KATH’ initiative, which aims to enhance healthcare delivery. He assured that the government is committed to completing all ongoing health projects in the region.

The Minister also visited KATH to inspect the ongoing construction of the Maternity and Children’s block. To further decongest KATH, Dr. Okoe-Boye suggested that the Ghana Health Service could sign a memorandum of understanding with the Teaching Hospital.

This agreement could include modalities for directing certain care services to facilities like Sewua Hospital, thereby easing the pressure on KATH.

  • Why can’t Bawumia pick his own running mate? – Nyaho-Tamakloe quizzes

Why can’t Bawumia pick his own running mate? – Nyaho-Tamakloe quizzes

Prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has raised eyebrows within the party by alleging that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh was imposed as the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe expressed his concerns in response to reports that Dr. Bawumia had presented Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s name as his choice for running mate.

In an interview with 3FM, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe reiterated his belief that Dr. Bawumia was not given the freedom to select his preferred running mate independently.

He referenced historical precedents within the NPP and other political parties, where presidential candidates traditionally had autonomy in choosing their running mates without external influence.

“I know for a fact that he can’t pick his own running mate and I made mention of this almost seven months ago,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe stated, highlighting his earlier predictions about potential interference in the selection process.

He compared Dr. Bawumia’s situation unfavorably with past presidential candidates from various political backgrounds who had the liberty to make their own decisions regarding running mates.

“Bawumia’s position, he will find it difficult to pick his own running mate. Rawlings picked his own running mate, nobody would dare bring anyone to him and say ‘this one should go with you’. He fielded Ackaah and he failed, he changed him to another person. Kufuor picked his own running mate.”

“First round, second round, I was present. Not that someone was telling me. Atta Mills picked his own running mate, Mahama picked his own running mate. Akufo-Addo, scene one, picked his own running mate, scene two, picked his own running mate. Why can’t Bawumia pick his own running mate?” he quizzed.

Dr. Bawumia, the current NPP flagbearer, had reportedly requested more time to consult before finalizing his decision on a running mate.

However, the eventual announcement of Dr. Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, has sparked controversy and debate within political circles.

  • Sole use of Ghana Card will avert conflicts during voter registration – EC

Sole use of Ghana Card will avert conflicts during voter registration – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana is advocating for the Ghana Card to become the sole identification for voter registration in future elections, aiming to prevent the confrontations that marred the recent voter transfer exercise.

This exercise, notably in Weija, saw several incidents of confusion and violence, resulting in injuries, including the son of Awutu Senya East MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Speaking to the media following a meeting with over 50 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), EC Chairperson Jean Mensa highlighted the need for Parliament to pass a bill endorsing the Ghana Card as the exclusive requirement for voter registration.

She emphasized that such a change would streamline the process and reduce conflicts.

Mensa expressed satisfaction with the feedback from the CSOs, underscoring the collaborative efforts to ensure peaceful elections in the future.

“The input from the CSOs has been invaluable, and we hope Parliament recognizes the importance of the Ghana Card as the sole voter ID,” she stated.

Reflecting on the recent voter transfer exercise, Mensa noted that although it was generally successful, there were instances of unrest and conflicts.

“No lives were lost, thankfully, but the issues around the guarantor system led to parties challenging each other at the registration centers,” she said.

The EC believes that adopting the Ghana Card exclusively would eliminate such disputes, leading to more orderly and conflict-free voter registration processes.

Mensa expressed hope that Parliament will align with the EC’s proposal to adopt the Ghana Card for future elections, albeit after the 2024 elections.

“We trust that Parliament will see the necessity of this change to prevent future conflicts,” she added.

Albert Kofi Arhin, National Coordinator of the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), emphasized the importance of promoting peace ahead of the elections.

He highlighted the high tensions and desperation among the populace due to the economic situation. “The EC’s engagement with CSOs is crucial. We need to educate the people about peace, especially given the heightened tensions this election year,” Arhin urged.

My gov’t will work tirelessly to develop social housing that is affordable – Mahama

Former President and current flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has announced his intention to make the passage of the Rent Control Bill a top priority should he be elected in the forthcoming elections.

This commitment aims to alleviate the financial pressures on tenants by prohibiting the advance payment of more than one year’s rent.

In a Facebook post on Friday, June 28, Mahama highlighted his dedication to addressing the housing challenges faced by Ghanaians.

He underscored the significance of providing affordable and accessible social housing as a fundamental part of his vision for Ghana’s future.

Expressing his solidarity with the 19 million renters in Ghana, Mahama emphasized his understanding of their struggles. He pledged that his administration would work tirelessly to improve housing conditions and ensure that social housing is within reach for the average Ghanaian. “Housing is a crucial need, and my government will work tirelessly to develop SOCIAL HOUSING that is truly affordable and accessible for ordinary Ghanaians. That will be one of my legacies as President,” he wrote.

Mahama reiterated his commitment to pushing for the Rent Control Bill, which aims to protect tenants from the undue burden of paying excessive rent advances. “We will also push for the Rent Control Bill to be passed into law to prevent tenants from being unfairly burdened with paying more than one year’s rent in advance,” he stated.

The former president expressed his deep empathy for the millions of renters in Ghana and his commitment to building a brighter future for all citizens, with housing playing a pivotal role.

“I deeply empathise with the 19 million people in Ghana who are renting and committed to building a brighter future for all Ghanaians, with housing being a pivotal aspect of that,” he posted.

I found my husband after the worst heartbreak of my life – Nollywood’s Sharon Ooja

Nollywood actress Sharon Ooja recently tied the knot with her partner, Ugo Nwoke, in a beautiful ceremony in Abuja.

In an exclusive interview with Bella Naija, Sharon opened up about her unexpected and swift journey into marriage, revealing details that highlight the serendipitous nature of their love story.

Sharon recounted how she was introduced to Ugo by her sister during a period when she was recovering from a devastating heartbreak.

Initially reluctant to engage with anyone new, she eventually gave in to her sister’s persistence.

“My sister said a friend of hers wanted to speak to me, and I wasn’t in the mood. But she gave him my number anyway,” Sharon shared.

Their communication began slowly, with Sharon not immediately realizing the significance of the connection. “He was really smart, and we probably didn’t speak as much as we should have,” she admitted.

Despite her initial disinterest, Ugo’s persistence paid off. Months passed, and he continued to reach out, leading to increasingly meaningful conversations.

One particular conversation marked a turning point in their relationship. “We spoke for about three hours, and I realized I liked him,” Sharon said.

This deep conversation sparked a shift in her feelings, making her more open to the possibility of a relationship.

Their relationship progressed quickly from there. Sharon recalled an instance when Ugo didn’t call her for a couple of days while she was traveling.

When she asked him why, he responded with, “You told me you were going to go out and have fun.” His next words were even more telling: “I didn’t want you to be single anymore.” This declaration set the stage for their whirlwind romance.

After just two and a half months of dating, Ugo proposed, and Sharon accepted. Their engagement quickly led to marriage, with the couple tying the knot just two months later.

Reflecting on this rapid journey, Sharon described it as nothing short of a miracle. “We dated for literally two-and-a-half months, and I was engaged in the third month. And we married two months after that.”

Stop saying bad things about each other because of Bawumia’s running mate choice – Afenyo-Markin to NPP MPs

Effutu MP and Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has issued a stern warning to his colleagues and party sympathizers within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to avoid internal conflicts as the party prepares to announce its running mate for the 2024 elections.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Afenyo-Markin stressed the importance of unity over division, especially as the decision regarding a running mate for the NPP’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, remains pending.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized the need for NPP members, particularly MPs, to exercise caution in their public statements and interactions about the running mate selection process.

“We’ve all heard the discussions about who might be the running mate, but no final decision has been made. The party has structures in place to handle this,” he stated.

He encouraged his colleagues to focus on collective goals rather than personal preferences.

The Effutu MP highlighted the potential harm of unguarded remarks, urging his colleagues to be mindful of their language.

None of us is perfect. We must be careful about how we describe each other and the words we use. Such language may not be helpful,” he said.

He assured that Dr. Bawumia, with input from party elders, would select a running mate who best serves the party’s interests.

Recent reports indicate that Dr. Bawumia has consulted President Akufo-Addo regarding his choice of running mate for the December 7 presidential election.

During a meeting at the Jubilee House on June 25, Bawumia presented Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, for consideration. President Akufo-Addo provided feedback and ultimately accepted Bawumia’s choice.

However, this decision has not been universally welcomed within the party. Andy Appiah-Kubi, a member of the NPP’s National Council and MP for Asante Akim North, voiced his opposition.

He argued that Dr. Opoku Prempeh lacks broad support within the party, particularly among MPs, and may struggle to campaign effectively across various constituencies.

“We need someone who can engage with the grassroots, deliver votes, submit to the presidency, and bridge the gap between Parliament and the executive,” Appiah-Kubi stated.

  • No Parliamentary approval for ambulance contract – Jakpa admits

No Parliamentary approval for ambulance contract – Jakpa admits

Richard Jakpa, a central figure in the ongoing trial concerning the procurement of ambulances, has admitted under cross-examination by Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame that the international business agreement with Dubai-based company Big Sea General Trading LLC did not receive parliamentary approval as mandated by Ghana’s Constitution.

Jakpa, embattled alongside former Deputy Minister of Finance Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Sylvester Anemana, former Chief Director of the Ministry of Health, acknowledged the absence of parliamentary endorsement for the contract.

This admission underscores a critical breach under Article 181(5) of the Constitution, which requires such agreements involving substantial financial implications for the state to be presented to Parliament for scrutiny and approval.

During proceedings, Jakpa clarified that neither the initial business proposal submitted to the Ministry of Health nor subsequent official communications to Cabinet mentioned Big Sea.

Furthermore, Cabinet approval and parliamentary committee examinations did not reference the company, indicating a significant oversight in due process.

Attorney-General Dame pressed Jakpa further on documentation related to Big Sea’s registration as a company licensed to convert vehicles into ambulances.

According to Jakpa’s own documents, Big Sea obtained this license in April 2015, well after the contract for ambulance procurement was signed in December 2012 and the subsequent importation of vehicles in 2014.

The case, centered on allegations of causing financial loss to the state amounting to €2.37 million, revolves around a deal initiated during Anemana’s tenure at the Ministry of Health. The agreement with Big Sea, signed in December 2012, committed the supply of 200 Mercedes Benz ambulances at a unit cost of €79,000, totaling €15.8 million.

The trial has drawn considerable attention due to its implications for procedural integrity and financial accountability within government contracts. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, also a Member of Parliament for Ajumako Enyan Esiam and the NDC’s Ranking Member on the Finance Committee, remains a key defendant in the proceedings.

As Ghanaian socialite Hajia4Reall, known legally as Mona Montrage Faiz, marked her 32nd birthday on June 26, 2024, her daughter Naila took to Instagram to extend heartfelt wishes to her mother.

Naila’s message simply read, “Happy birthday Mother,” acknowledging the occasion amidst ongoing challenges in her mother’s life.

Earlier this year, Naila herself celebrated turning eight on May 9, 2024, highlighting a poignant moment for the family amidst recent turmoil.

In 2023, Hajia4Reall faced significant legal troubles when she celebrated her 31st birthday under the shadow of serious accusations.

The FBI had accused her of involvement in a romance scam, leading to her arrest in the UK on November 11, 2022, and subsequent extradition to the United States.

Eventually, she pleaded guilty to charges related to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering, offenses that collectively carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

Following a lengthy legal battle spanning a year and a half, Hajia4Reall’s defense team has recently appealed for leniency from the court.

They proposed a three-month jail term followed by deportation to Ghana, arguing that she had been manipulated by a fraud syndicate. The defense emphasized her role as a mother, highlighting the need for her to care for Naila.

This plea for mercy forms part of a series of submissions to the court, including letters and supporting documents, pleading for leniency in sentencing.

  • Defence Ministry’s letter on Jakpa’s dismissal from Ghana Army admitted in evidence by court

Defence Ministry’s letter on Jakpa’s dismissal from Ghana Army admitted in evidence by court

Letters from the Ministry of Defence detailing the dismissal of the third accused, Richard Jakpa, in the ongoing ambulance procurement trial, from the Ghana Armed Forces have been admitted into evidence by the court.

The documents outline the reasons for Jakpa’s sacking, shedding light on his history of misconduct and insubordination.

During the court proceedings on Tuesday, June 18, Jakpa openly acknowledged his dismissal from the Armed Forces, attributing it to allegations of insubordination and repeated failures in mandatory intelligence exams.

Jakpa, who was commissioned into the Armed Forces in 1998, was dismissed in 2007. He cited his failure to pass intelligence exams five times between 2000 and 2007 as the key reason for his dismissal.

“Jakpa confirmed that he was commissioned in the Armed Forces in 1998 and got dismissed in 2007 for misconduct/insubordination and failure to pass the required intelligence exams five times within seven years. He failed in 2000, 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2007,” the prosecution revealed.

Jakpa defended himself, asserting that his dismissal was a result of victimization by senior officers who were envious of his exemplary performance as a soldier. He maintained that his dismissal was unjust and that he was targeted due to jealousy.

The prosecution, led by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), conducted a thorough cross-examination, uncovering significant revelations about Jakpa’s past. The letters from the Ministry of Defence provided detailed accounts of the reasons for Jakpa’s dismissal, adding weight to the prosecution’s case.

Additionally, Jakpa admitted that the conversation between himself and the Attorney-General (AG), presented in court as Exhibit 10 by the defense, did not encompass the entire dialogue. He claimed that only portions favorable to their defense were included in the submission.

“Jakpa confirmed in open court that the conversation between him and the AG that is in circulation and which was tendered in court by the accused persons as Exhibit 10 is actually not the full conversation. They only presented the aspects of the conversation that will help their case,” the prosecution stated.

In Court on Thursday, June 27, the Ministry’s Letter of dismissal showed that Jakpa was dismissed from the Ghana Army in November 2007 for “unsatisfactory conduct marked by fraudulent conduct abrasiveness, general indiscipline” and that he belongs to a world incompatible with decent and gentlemanly composure.

The Ministry of Defence further stated that Jakpa “is a bad example by all standards and his continued retention in the Service is likely to cause more harm to the Service and to himself”.

The Ministry further noted that, per Jakpa’s records, he should have made the rank of Captain by August 2002 but consistently failed his promotion examinations and lagged far behind his mates in rank. Jakpa was therefore released for inefficiency.

The trial, which has attracted significant public interest, involves the current Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and businessman Richard Jakpa.

They face allegations of deliberately causing financial loss to the state amounting to 2.37 million euros through the procurement of ambulances. Both Dr. Ato Forson and Jakpa have pleaded not guilty and are currently standing trial.

I didn’t approach Big Sea for purchase of ambulances after parliamentary approval – Jakpa

Richard Jakpa, the third accused person in the ongoing ambulance procurement trial, has rebutted accusations that he approached Big Sea for the purchase of ambulances after receiving parliamentary approval.

In a decisive moment during cross-examination by Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Godfred Yeboah Dame, Jakpa categorically refuted the allegations, describing them as entirely false.

He clarified that Big Sea was already known to both the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Finance before parliamentary approval was granted.

Jakpa emphasized key dates to support his defense, highlighting that the agency agreement between Big Sea and Jakpa@business Limited was established on May 24, 2011.

In contrast, parliamentary approval for the ambulance procurement came much later on November 1, 2012, over a year after the initial agreement.

The accused vehemently denied any misconduct in his interactions with Big Sea following parliamentary approval. He asserted that the timeline presented by the AG inaccurately depicted his actions and the sequence of events.

The defense’s argument centers on the chronology of events and the existing relationships between the parties involved.
