My son secured Labadi Beachfront lawfully – Freddie Blay

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Freddie Blay, has addressed recent accusations surrounding the land acquisition for the Polo Beach Club, asserting that his son, Kwaw Blay, legally obtained the property from the La Traditional Council.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Tuesday, Freddie Blay refuted claims by North Tongu Member of Parliament Samuel Okudzato Ablakwa, who suggested the land acquisition was unlawful.

Mr Blay emphasized that the land was leased to his son and his business partners for a period of 25 years, with full authorization from the traditional authorities.

“The place was leased by the traditional authorities and you call it state capture. It is a lease for about 20 to 25 years. This stretch of land used here does not belong to government and it does not belong to the Labadi Beach Hotel,” Blay clarified.

In a recent interview on Citi FM, Kwaw Blay demanded an apology from Ablakwa and threatened legal action, criticizing Ablakwa’s public comments as baseless and damaging to their reputation.

“It is so preposterous as a learned gentleman like Ablakwa himself will come and spew such utter rubbish. It is unfair that you drag our good name. By the middle of next week, he will hear from our lawyers very strongly and in different [batches]. Mind you sir he has mentioned three individuals so he should be very careful,” Kwaw Blay stated.

Let there be calm – Lands Ministry to Adamus Resources Limited over dispute

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has issued a plea for calm amid escalating tensions involving Adamus Resources Limited, a mining company operating in Ghana’s Western Region.

The appeal comes amidst recent disputes over the company’s management, particularly concerning the interim Management Committee (IMC) appointed by the Accra High Court of Justice (Commercial Division 7) on July 27, 2023.

According to reports, the IMC has faced challenges executing its duties, culminating in an incident on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.

On that day, the committee was reportedly blocked by the company’s security personnel and police officers from entering Adamus Resources Limited’s operational headquarters in the Ellembelle District.

This obstruction prevented the committee from conducting necessary inspections and engaging with company staff.

In a statement released on Thursday, June 27, the Ministry emphasized the importance of peaceful dialogue and negotiation in resolving the ongoing conflicts.

It urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could escalate tensions or jeopardize the safety of affected communities.

The Ministry clarified that the government maintains a neutral stance in the legal dispute and does not endorse any party involved.

It stressed the significance of upholding the judicial process and allowing the courts to adjudicate the matter fairly and peacefully.

Furthermore, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that mining operations in Ghana adhere to both legal regulations and ethical standards.

It called upon all stakeholders, including Adamus Resources Limited and the IMC, to cooperate in finding a resolution that promotes peace and stability in the region.

“The Ministry trusts in the judiciary of our nation to address all pertinent issues. However, we are prepared to engage with all parties to seek an amicable resolution,” the statement read.

Additionally, the Ministry cautioned against discussing the matter in the media or taking actions that could prejudice fair court proceedings.

It urged all involved parties to refrain from actions that could disrupt the company’s operations until the legal matters are resolved.

Savings and Loans Operation Manager arrested for assaulting female worker over GHc90

The Operations Manager of Multi Credit Savings and Loans Ltd in Nkawkaw has been arrested and put before the Nkawkaw Magistrate Court for assaulting Martha Adutwumwaa, a 28-year-old mobile banker, reportedly over a GH¢90 shortage.

The court presided over by His Worship Isaac Agyei, heard the case where Elikplim allegedly assaulted Adutwumwaa, leading her to seek medical attention at Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital.

However, she faced challenges in raising the GH¢400 required for a medical report.

Following the incident, the judge has deferred judgment to Friday, June 28, 2024. Elikplim has been remanded into police custody pending the final decision.

A video circulating on social media captured the disturbing scene, showing Elikplim continuing to assault Adutwumwaa despite attempted intervention by coworkers.

Engaging the media, Adutwumwaa noted that during their disagreement, Elikplim informed her about seeing her in his dreams in life-threatening situations and managing to overcome her. He is said to have then told Adutwumwaa that he had the power to ensure she was paralysed.

Adutuwmwaa says she informed him of his incapabilities.

The case has sparked outrage and concerns over workplace safety and employee rights in Ghana.

Per Ghana’s Labour Act 2003, Clause 18 notes that “An employer shall take appropriate measures to safeguard the health and safety of employees.”

Clause 38 of the law reads that “A person who contravenes any of these regulations commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of twenty-five penalty units.”

Georgia squad gifted £8.4m from ex-PM for beating Portugal in Euro 2024

Bidzina Ivanishvili, the former prime minister of Georgia and founder of the ruling Georgian Dream political party, has pledged a significant donation of £8.4 million (30 million Georgian Lari) to the Georgian national football team following their stunning 2-0 victory over Portugal at Euro 2024.

Managed by former French defender Willy Sagnol, the Georgian team’s victory in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday secured their place in the last-16 stage of the tournament, where they are set to face Spain.

Describing the win against Portugal as a “historic and dream victory,” Ivanishvili expressed his pride in the team’s achievement.

The 68-year-old philanthropist and businessman, who amassed his wealth in Russia during the 1990s through investments in banking, computers, and metals, emphasized his commitment to supporting Georgian football.

In addition to the initial donation, Ivanishvili announced that he would contribute a further £8.4 million to the squad and coaching staff should they continue their success by defeating Spain in their upcoming match.

Despite stepping down from his role as prime minister after just one year in office, Ivanishvili retains influence as the honorary chairman of the Georgian Dream party. The donations will be facilitated through his charitable foundation, marking a substantial investment in the national football team’s future.

Earlier this year, Ivanishvili’s party faced criticism from some members of the Georgian Euro 2024 squad following the introduction of a controversial law regarding “foreign agents.” The legislation, passed in parliament amidst protests alleging threats to civil liberties, sparked significant unrest in Georgia, overshadowing the country’s debut appearance in the European Championship.

Georgia’s upcoming match against Spain in Cologne on Sunday marks a crucial moment for the team, as they strive to continue their impressive journey in Euro 2024.

  • Jakpa admits seal on Ato Forson’s LC was of Deputy Minister in ambulance trial

Jakpa admits seal on Ato Forson’s LC was of Deputy Minister in ambulance trial

The third accused person, Richard Jakpa, has clarified a crucial detail regarding the letter from the first accused, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, concerning the establishment of Letters of Credit (LCs).

Contrary to his initial claim, Jakpa admitted that the seal on the letter was not that of the then Minister for Finance, Seth Terkper, but of the Controller and Accountant-General.

Further, Jakpa confirmed that, contrary to his assertion that the authorization was from the Minister for Finance, the seal indicated the presence of a word preceding “Minister for Finance” that began with the letter “D”.

The Deputy Attorney-General pointed out that this word was “Deputy”, indicating that the letter was authorized by the Deputy Minister for Finance, not the Minister himself.

Mr. Jakpa emphasized that the letter, which authorized the establishment of LCs for the procurement of ambulances, was correctly addressed to the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and issued on behalf of the then Finance Minister, Seth Terkper. He argued that this detail is crucial for understanding the context and appropriateness of the authorization process.

Jakpa’s testimony served as a defense against allegations that Dr. Ato Forson acted improperly in the ambulance procurement process.

He emphasized that the procedure followed by Dr. Forson was consistent with standard governmental practices and that directing the letter to the BoG aligns with the usual protocols for such financial transactions. This, he argued, should mitigate claims of wrongdoing attributed to Dr. Ato Forson.

The controversy surrounding the procurement of the ambulances has seen Dr. Ato Forson accused of financial malfeasance, with prosecutors alleging that he bypassed established procedures.

However, Jakpa countered this by stating that addressing the letter to the BoG was not only appropriate but also necessary for the timely and efficient execution of the procurement.

Jakpa explained that the BoG is the correct entity for handling such transactions, as it oversees the country’s monetary policy and financial operations.

He detailed how the BoG, rather than the CAGD, is typically responsible for issuing LCs due to its role in managing the nation’s foreign exchange and international financial transactions.

This distinction, he noted, is critical in ensuring that financial processes adhere to proper channels, reinforcing that Dr. Ato Forson’s actions were in line with standard practices.

Despite Jakpa’s defense, the prosecution maintained that the seal on the document indicated the authority of the former Deputy Minister, not the Minister.

Hawks select French Teen Risacher as top pick in NBA draft

The Atlanta Hawks have made a significant move by selecting teenage French forward Zaccharie Risacher with the first overall pick in this year’s NBA draft.

This marks the second consecutive year that a French player has topped the draft, following Victor Wembanyama’s selection last year.

While Wembanyama’s pick was widely anticipated, this year’s draft saw fierce competition between Risacher and fellow Frenchman Alexandre Sarr, who frequently traded places atop mock drafts in recent months.

The 19-year-old Risacher, who stands 6 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 195 pounds, most recently played for JL Bourg-en-Bresse in the French top flight.

Overwhelmed with emotion, he expressed his excitement to ESPN, saying, “There’s a lot of feelings and emotions right now. I don’t know what to say, I’m so blessed.”

Following Risacher, the Washington Wizards chose 19-year-old center Alexandre Sarr with the second overall pick. Sarr spent the 2023-24 season with the Perth Wildcats in Australia’s National Basketball League.

This selection marks the third instance in NBA draft history where the top two picks had no college experience. Sarr’s brother, Olivier, is a center with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Reflecting on his brother’s influence, Sarr told ESPN, “Everything I’ve learned is through him and he gave me all his knowledge, and to this day it’s really special to have someone like him in my corner.”

The third overall pick went to the Houston Rockets, who selected Kentucky’s Reed Sheppard. UConn’s Stephon Castle was chosen fourth by the San Antonio Spurs.

Ron Holland of G League Ignite rounded out the top five with his selection by the Detroit Pistons. Making it three French players in the top six, Tidjane Salaun, an 18-year-old, was picked by the Charlotte Hornets.

In other notable news, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has expressed his desire to play with or against his son, Bronny James, before retiring.

Bronny, 19, is expected to be selected in the second round. The Lakers picked Dalton Knecht 17th overall, with their next selection scheduled for late in the second round.

This year’s draft has been structured over two days, with the first round taking place at the Barclays Center in New York, while the second round will be held at ESPN’s Seaport District Studios, also in New York.

  • Bill to check prices of cement will be passed before Parliament adjourns – K.T. Hammond

Bill to check prices of cement will be passed before Parliament adjourns – K.T. Hammond

Trade and Industry Minister K.T. Hammond has declared his intention to disregard a petition from the Chamber of Cement Manufacturers, which sought to delay the implementation of a legislative instrument (L.I.) aimed at regulating cement prices in Ghana.

K.T. Hammond emphasized that the law is crucial to prevent exploitation by a cartel of manufacturers.

According to the proposed L.I., cement manufacturers could face up to three years in prison for violations. Despite opposition from the Minority in Parliament and various interest groups, K.T. Hammond remains resolute in his decision.

In an interview with Evans Mensah on JoyNews’ PM Express, K.T. Hammond explained that he has made multiple attempts to engage the manufacturers in good faith. However, these efforts were unsuccessful, leading to his decision to enforce the law to ensure fair pricing for consumers.

“I intend to ignore the petition. I am working in the interest of the good people of Ghana and not in the interest of cement manufacturing companies,” he asserted.

Hammond noted that although the manufacturers were not consulted during the drafting of the L.I., he has consistently communicated with them about the need for transparency in pricing.

“I didn’t have to consult them in drafting the L.I. I warned them consistently that they couldn’t do what they’re doing—raising prices. I consulted with them several times in my office, I told them what I wanted. I wanted them to be transparent, for there to be a reduction,” he said.

He mentioned that the manufacturers had dismissed his warnings, leading to his decision to move forward with the legislative process.

“On a simple matter of price publication and self-regularisation, I have been going on and on… it gets to a point when something has to be done, and what has to be done for me within the law is to go to Parliament,” the Trade Minister stated.

K.T. Hammond expressed hope that the bill to regulate cement prices will be passed soon. He aims to lay the legislative instrument in Parliament and secure its passage before the current session expires.

“I have given the bill to my leader, the Majority Leader, to get it laid, and I expect that within 21 days it should become law. By Thursday or Friday, it should be laid. I have a funny feeling that on this occasion they won’t battle me because if you battle me on this, you are battling the good people of Ghana,” he concluded.

  • 33-year-old Solomon Amissah jailed 11 years and 6 months for death of woman in UK

33-year-old Solomon Amissah jailed 11 years and 6 months for death of woman in UK

Solomon Amissah, aged 37 and a resident of Mount Lane, Bracknell, has been sentenced to 11 years and six months in jail following a fatal collision, according to Thames Valley Police.

The sentencing took place at Reading Crown Court on Thursday, June 20.

Amissah pleaded guilty to charges including causing death by dangerous driving, driving a motor vehicle while over the prescribed limit, and driving without third party insurance. These charges stem from an incident that occurred on December 17, 2022.

The court heard that Amissah had attended a Christmas party and subsequently got into his car while under the influence of alcohol, driving above the speed limit on Mill Lane in Bracknell.

Shockingly, he proceeded along the wrong carriageway against the flow of traffic before entering the Mill Pond roundabout in the wrong direction. Continuing on the dual carriageway, Amissah collided with another vehicle.

Tragically, the collision resulted in the death of a woman in her 30s, described as a mother-of-three, who sustained multiple injuries and died at the scene.

Detective Constable Joy Jarvis, the investigating officer, condemned Amissah’s actions as “one of the most dangerous pieces of driving” she has investigated.

She highlighted Amissah’s blatant disregard for the safety of others by driving intoxicated and distracted by his mobile phone along the wrong carriageway for nearly a mile.

Jarvis emphasized the gravity of Amissah’s actions, stating that the sentencing underscores the severe consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol and using mobile phones while driving. She expressed condolences to the victim’s family, underscoring the lasting impact of Amissah’s reckless behavior.

Amissah was arrested on the day of the incident and formally charged on February 8, 2024. In addition to his prison sentence, he has been disqualified from driving for eight years and must undergo an extended re-test to regain his license.

The nationality of Amissah has not been revealed but it is believed that he traces his origin to Ghana. The name Amissah is one adopted by some families coming from the Central Region in the West African country.

  • 5% tax on locally manufactured plastics will collapse 30,000 jobs – Gov’t told

5% tax on locally manufactured plastics will collapse 30,000 jobs – Gov’t told

The Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) has raised alarm over the potential impact of a planned 5% excise tax on locally manufactured plastics, warning that over 30,000 workers in the sector could face layoffs if the tax is implemented.

President of the GPMA, Ebo Botchwey, expressed grave concerns about the detrimental effects of the proposed tax, emphasizing that it could lead to the shutdown of production plants and significantly increase prices of essential products such as medicines, beverages, and sachet water.

Mr Botchwey argued that the timing of the tax implementation is unfavorable, particularly amid economic challenges exacerbated by exchange rate fluctuations.

He criticized the government for imposing additional taxes without adequate consultation with industry stakeholders, noting that many businesses are already struggling to cope with existing tax burdens.

“We have been burdened with numerous taxes, and imposing another one now shows a disregard for the growth of businesses,” Botchwey lamented. He highlighted the trend of companies relocating from Ghana due to high operating costs, which threatens the country’s competitiveness in the region.

The Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers also expressed solidarity with GPMA’s stance, warning that they would be forced to halt production for a week if the tax is enforced.

Magnus Nunnoo, President of the association, emphasized the impracticality of packaging water in alternative materials like paper, underscoring the essential role of plastics in their operations.

Mr Nunnoo called for immediate suspension of the tax and urged comprehensive stakeholder consultations before any such measures are implemented. He appealed to Vice President Dr. Bawumia to intervene, highlighting the potential hardship the tax could impose on consumers, especially the economically vulnerable segments of society.

President of the Ghana Union Traders Association (GUTA), Joseph Obeng, echoed these concerns, warning of severe supply chain disruptions if plastic manufacturers cease operations.

He emphasized the critical role of plastics in packaging materials, essential for products like bottled and sachet water.

“We cannot package water in paper; we still have to use plastic materials,” Obeng stressed, highlighting the domino effect that a shutdown of plastic manufacturing could have on various sectors reliant on plastic packaging.

The stakeholders have given the Ministry of Finance a one-week ultimatum to respond to their concerns, threatening collective action if their demands are not met. They called on the government to halt harassment of plastic manufacturers and prioritize policies that support economic growth and job creation.

Turkey beat Czech Republic to secure last-16 tie against Austria

Turkey secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic, thanks to a stoppage-time winner by Cenk Tosun, setting up a last-16 tie against Austria in the European Championship.

The game, held under sunny skies in Hamburg, Germany, was marked by high tension and an unprecedented number of cards, totaling 18, setting a new record for disciplinary actions in a European Championship match.

The Czech Republic entered the match needing a win to avoid elimination, but their hopes took a severe blow midway through the first half when Antonin Barak was sent off for a second yellow card offense.

Despite being down to ten men, the Czechs fought valiantly and managed to equalize after Hakan Calhanoglu had given Turkey the lead with a precise strike into the bottom corner early in the second half.

West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek leveled the score for the Czech Republic with a volley from close range, setting the stage for a tense and open-ended finish as both teams pushed for a decisive goal.

It was Turkey who ultimately found the breakthrough deep into stoppage time when Tosun skillfully cut inside and fired a shot past the Czech goalkeeper, sparking wild celebrations among the Turkish players and fans.

The match concluded in chaotic scenes as players from both sides clashed, resulting in another red card for the Czech Republic as Tomas Chory was sent off. Despite the ill-discipline and the heated atmosphere, Turkey emerged victorious and secured their spot in the knockout stages.

Turkey’s triumph over the Czech Republic adds another chapter to their Euro history, recalling their memorable comeback victory over the same opponent in the 2008 tournament.

With their passionate fans behind them, Turkey now looks forward to facing Austria in the round of 16, aiming to continue their impressive campaign in the European Championship.

  • Ghana Plastic Manufacturers fight 5% excise tax on locally produced plastic products

Ghana Plastic Manufacturers fight 5% excise tax on locally produced plastic products

President of the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association, Ebbo Botchway, has strongly criticized the imposition of a 5% excise tax on locally produced plastic products, warning of its adverse impact on businesses and consumers alike.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsnight on June 26, Mr Botchway expressed concerns that the tax was implemented without consulting his association, emphasizing its potential to exacerbate living conditions.

Mr Botchway argued against the blanket application of the tax to all plastic products, asserting that certain plastics, particularly rigid ones, do not pose significant environmental risks and should therefore be exempted.

He emphasized the need for a nuanced approach, advocating for a collaborative effort to develop a product-specific tax list that considers environmental impact.

“If this tax is not suspended,” Botchway cautioned, “it will not only harm businesses but also worsen the economic circumstances of consumers.”

He criticized the government’s decision to allocate the revenue purely for government purposes rather than earmarking it for plastic waste management, a move he described as problematic for the industry.

Moreover, Mr Botchway highlighted existing issues with the 10% tax under the Customs and Excise (Amendment) Act of 2013, which was intended to fund plastic waste management and recycling initiatives.

Despite collecting over 1.97 billion Ghana cedis, Botchway lamented that none of these funds have been allocated to support recycling efforts, suggesting that a fraction of this sum could significantly boost recycling initiatives and plants dedicated to processing plastic waste.

In the 2024 budget, the government expanded the Environmental Excise Duty to include plastic packaging, aiming to address distortions in the current excise policy.

However, Botchway’s association contends that without proper consultation and consideration of the diverse impacts of various plastic products, such policies risk undermining both environmental goals and the economic stability of local plastic manufacturers.

You must engage all presidential aspirants to ensure a peaceful 2024 elections – Peace Council to EC

The Chairman of Ghana’s National Peace Council (NPC), Rev Dr Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, has advocated for a crucial meeting between the Electoral Commission (EC) and all presidential candidates ahead of the upcoming December elections.

This proposal aims to provide a platform for candidates to express their concerns and ensure a peaceful electoral process.

In an interview with JoyNews’ Latif Iddrisu, Rev Dr Adu-Gyamfi emphasized the necessity of fostering peace among candidates during their campaigns and beyond.

He stressed that electoral campaigns should focus not only on policies but also on upholding democratic values and respecting electoral outcomes.

“Elections are won at the polling stations, and violence should have no place in our democratic process,” stated Dr Adu-Gyamfi, highlighting the importance of peaceful conduct by political parties and their supporters.

Already, Ghana’s major political parties, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), have confirmed their flagbearers for the 2024 elections. Former President John Mahama will represent the NDC, while Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will lead the NPP’s campaign.

In addition to the main parties, other contenders have declared their intentions to vie for the presidency. John Kwadwo Kyerematen, leader of the Movement for Change, and Nana Kwame Bediako, heading The New Force political movement, are among those aspiring to contest.

However, the Convention People’s Party (CPP) is facing internal challenges that may prevent them from fielding a presidential candidate this election cycle.

All you need to know about Michael Essien’s mortgage suit

Recent court documents have revealed significant details about the legal proceedings involving former Ghanaian football star, Michael Essien, and the Republic Bank Limited concerning the recovery and auction of his properties.

The Commercial Division of the Accra High Court has issued orders for the sale of two prime properties owned by Essien, located in prestigious areas of Accra.

The properties in question include House Number 9 at Stephen Quarshie Crescent, East Legon, and House Number 204/205 at Trassaco (Phase 2) Adjiringano.

These properties have been the subject of a legal dispute stemming from a $2.1 million mortgage contract between Essien, his wife Akosua Puni Essien, and Athena Real Estate Company Limited, and the Republic Bank.

According to reports from Gh Gossip 24, the lawsuit was initiated by Republic Bank Limited on September 23, 2020. The bank sought various reliefs, including an order to take possession of the properties with police escort assistance and a mandate to sell off the Trassaco property.

In response to the lawsuit, the respondents, including Michael Essien and the other parties, applied for an out-of-court settlement on October 28, 2020.

This led to the court setting aside the initial orders requested by Republic Bank. The out-of-court negotiations revealed that Essien’s mortgage debt as of July 21, 2020, amounted to $2,164,345.80, which increased to $2,310,343 due to accrued interest.

Under the terms of the agreement reached in February 2021 and approved by Justice Afi Agbanu Kudomor, the parties agreed that Essien would cover legal fees, survey costs, and other expenses associated with recovering the properties.

The agreement also stipulated efforts to secure a buyer for the Trassaco property, a luxurious five-bedroom house valued at over $20 million.

The property, described as having amenities such as a swimming pool, cinema, and gym, has been listed on both Republic Bank’s website and real estate platforms like Meqasa.com for approximately GH₵ 225,000,000 ($14,745,584.25).

The agreement includes provisions for a potential reduction in price if the property remains unsold after six months.

The resolution of the case hinges on successful sale attempts within 12 months, failing which the matter may return to court for further adjudication.

The agreement also grants Republic Bank access to the properties upon execution, ceasing further interest calculations on the mortgage facility.

The financial strain caused by this prolonged delay has severely affected the caterers’ operations, making it increasingly difficult for them to meet their financial obligations. Many are struggling to pay creditors who have now resorted to threatening legal action against them.

In response to the dire financial situation, the caterers have issued a stern ultimatum to the government, demanding that all outstanding payments be deposited into their accounts by the end of Wednesday, June 26.

They have emphasized the seriousness of their demands, warning of imminent protests if the government fails to meet their deadline.

Meanwhile, a recent study conducted by the education think tank, Africa Education Watch, has highlighted a critical need for a 200 percent increase in funding for the school feeding programme.

According to the Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, approximately GH¢3 billion is necessary to sustain and improve the programme, ensuring that school children receive nutritious meals that enhance both their nutritional intake and educational outcomes.

Mr. Asare emphasized that the delay in disbursing funds not only jeopardizes the livelihoods of the caterers but also poses a significant threat to the continuity and effectiveness of this essential educational initiative.

  • Don’t take NPP seriously, they can’t prove Mahama will scrap Free SHS – Naana Jane to public

Don’t take NPP seriously, they can’t prove Mahama will scrap Free SHS – Naana Jane to public

Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, the running mate to John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a challenge to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to provide evidence supporting claims that the NDC intends to cancel the Free Senior High School (SHS) program if elected into power.

Speaking during her tour of the Abuakwa North constituency in Akyem-Tafo, Eastern Region, Professor Opoku Agyemang emphasized that the NDC’s stance on the Free SHS program is centered on reviewing and addressing the challenges it currently faces.

She dismissed allegations of plans to scrap the program as mere political rhetoric aimed at misleading the public.

“Anybody who has evidence that John Mahama had said anywhere that he will cancel Free SHS should provide it. If the person is unable to do so, let no one take that person seriously. We haven’t said anything like that,” she asserted.

Professor Opoku Agyemang pointed out that during the NDC’s previous administration, their approach was to introduce the progressively free SHS initiative, aimed at easing the financial burden on parents while ensuring all children had access to education.

She highlighted improvements made during that time, such as addressing supply shortages for educational materials like books and providing support for students’ essential needs.

Addressing a gathering at the Saviour Church of Ghana headquarters in Osiem, she reiterated the NDC’s commitment to enhancing the Free SHS program, drawing on their past initiatives to illustrate their dedication to improving educational access and quality.

During her visit to Akyem-Tafo, Professor Opoku Agyemang also visited the site of a palm oil extraction factory that had recently suffered a devastating fire. She pledged support for the affected community, donating fifty thousand cedis to aid in rebuilding the factory and restoring livelihoods.

Her tour of Abuakwa North constituency included meetings with local leaders and stakeholders, where she discussed various issues affecting the region and outlined the NDC’s vision for addressing them. The visit concluded with a warm reception from enthusiastic party supporters in Akyem-Tafo.

  • Leader of alleged coup attempt in Bolivia arrested

Leader of alleged coup attempt in Bolivia arrested

Bolivian authorities have arrested General Juan José Zúñiga, the leader of an apparent coup attempt, just hours after soldiers stormed the presidential palace in La Paz.

The dramatic events unfolded as hundreds of troops and armored vehicles positioned themselves on Murillo Square, home to key government buildings. An armored vehicle breached the main gate of the presidential palace, allowing soldiers to enter, but they later withdrew.

Gen Zúñiga, who led the rebellion, claimed his goal was to “restructure democracy” and expressed conditional respect for President Luis Arce. However, he was swiftly detained moments after telling reporters that the military intervened at the president’s behest.

This statement came after Zúñiga was removed from his position on Tuesday for making inflammatory comments about former president Evo Morales during a recent interview.

President Arce condemned the coup attempt, urging the public to “organize and mobilize in favor of democracy.”

In a televised address from within the presidential palace, he stated, “We cannot allow once again coup attempts to take Bolivian lives.” His call to action resonated, as pro-democracy demonstrators took to the streets in support of the government.

In a dramatic confrontation captured on camera, President Arce was seen ordering Gen Zúñiga to stand down and vacate his role.

He also announced the appointment of new military commanders, confirming Zúñiga’s dismissal following his criticism of Mr. Morales.

Evo Morales, who also denounced the coup attempt, called for criminal charges against Zúñiga and his “accomplices.”

The Bolivian public prosecutor’s office has initiated a criminal investigation, and Vice-Admiral Juan Arnez Salvador, head of the Bolivian Navy, has also been arrested.

The motivations behind Gen Zúñiga’s coup attempt remain unclear. He had previously declared on television that he would arrest Mr. Morales if the former president attempted to run for office again, despite Morales being barred from doing so.

Mr. Morales, who was ousted in 2019 by military leaders accusing him of election fraud, accused an “elite” of taking over the country and called the insurgents “vandals who have destroyed the country.” Shortly before his arrest, Gen Zúñiga claimed that President Arce had instructed him to deploy the armored vehicles to boost his declining popularity.

Opposition senator Andrea Barrientos echoed Zúñiga’s claims, suggesting that the economic and judicial crises prompted President Arce to stage a “self-coup.” She called for a thorough investigation, asserting, “The government has a lot of questions to answer to the people of Bolivia, and they need to explain this situation very well.”

Although Wednesday’s events appear to be a short-lived and poorly executed military uprising, the incident has left the government looking more vulnerable. There is concern that others might attempt to challenge Arce’s administration through political means rather than military force.

Mr. Morales urged his supporters, particularly those in the indigenous coca-growers movement, to demand an end to the coup attempt. This show of popular support likely bolstered resistance to Gen Zúñiga’s plans, which included freeing political prisoners such as former leader Jeanine Áñez.

President Arce and Mr. Morales, despite internal political disagreements, united in their condemnation of the coup attempt. Before Morales’s presidency, Bolivia was one of the most politically unstable countries in the Americas. His tenure brought stability until its contentious end, and Arce’s election in 2020 followed a period of turmoil.

Regional allies, including Venezuela and Colombia, swiftly condemned the coup attempt and called for the preservation of democracy. Even Washington and Paraguay’s centre-right President Santiago Peña voiced their opposition to the military insurrection.

Human rights activist Jhanisse Vaca Daza expressed concerns that President Arce might use the coup attempt as a pretext to crack down on opposition.

She warned, “It will legitimize and give Arce’s government more power to arrest new members of the opposition who they deem may be a threat to their governance.”

Elaine Thompson-Herah, the two-time Olympic champion in the 100m and 200m, has announced she will miss the Paris Olympics due to an Achilles injury.

The 31-year-old Jamaican sprinter, who has five Olympic gold medals to her name, sustained the injury during the New York City Grand Prix on June 9 and had to be carried off the track.

Thompson-Herah, renowned for her exceptional sprinting prowess, is the only sprinter besides her compatriot Usain Bolt to have won multiple Olympic titles in both the 100m and 200m.

She was preparing to defend her 100m title, having opted out of the 200m trials in Jamaica.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Thompson-Herah revealed that a “small tear on my Achilles tendon” has dashed her hopes of competing in her third Olympics.

“It’s a long road but I am willing to start over and keep working to make a full recovery and resume my track career,” she wrote.

“I am hurt and devastated to be missing the Olympics this year but at the end of the day it’s sports and my health comes first.”

Jamaica has dominated the women’s 100m at the Olympics, securing gold in the event for the past four consecutive Games.

Thompson-Herah contributed significantly to this legacy, winning gold in both the 100m and 200m at the Rio 2016 Olympics and successfully defending her titles in Tokyo in 2021.

She also clinched her fifth Olympic gold in Tokyo as part of Jamaica’s 4x100m relay team.

Mahama gifts ‘Buzstopboys’ GHC50k for clean Ghana campaign

Former President John Dramani Mahama has donated GH¢50,000 to the Buzstopboys, a group committed to promoting a clean environment in Ghana.

This generous contribution is aimed at assisting the group in acquiring essential tools and equipment for their ongoing Clean Ghana campaign.

Mr. Mahama highlighted the importance of voluntarism in maintaining urban cleanliness, emphasizing the pivotal role grassroots initiatives like the Buzstopboys play in tackling the challenges of urban waste management.

He noted that urban areas face unique difficulties due to their high populations and the absence of the communal hygiene standards often found in rural settings.

Reflecting on his own experiences, Mr. Mahama recalled the traditional practice of beginning the day with cleaning chores, a routine he observed has significantly diminished over time. He lamented the rise in urban anonymity and its adverse effect on civic responsibility towards cleanliness.

“When I saw you guys, young people, filling in that gap, I thought that you needed to be encouraged,” Mahama stated, expressing his admiration for the group’s dedication and initiative.

gement. By supporting the Buzstopboys, Mahama hopes to inspire other young people and community groups to take an active role in improving their environments.

The Buzstopboys, known for their dynamic and impactful campaigns, have been at the forefront of promoting environmental awareness and cleanliness across urban centers in Ghana.

With this financial boost, they are well-positioned to expand their efforts and reach even more communities, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and volunteerism.

  • “Akufo-Addo is the chief-architect of all the putrefying state capture” – Okudzeto

“Akufo-Addo is the chief-architect of all the putrefying state capture” – Okudzeto

North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has labelled President Akufo-Addo as the “chief architect” of a controversial deal involving the sale of four SSNIT Hotels to Rock City, a company owned by the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

Mr Ablakwa’s accusations come in the wake of widespread opposition to the sale, which has sparked significant public outcry and protests under the banner ‘Hands Off Our Hotels.’

Despite these protests and a meeting with organized labor earlier this week, President Akufo-Addo has refused to halt the transaction.

In a social media post on June 26, 2024, Ablakwa drew a parallel to recent events in Kenya, where massive youth protests compelled the government to withdraw a contentious finance bill that included tax increases.

The Kenyan demonstrations escalated dramatically, culminating in the burning of cars and a portion of the parliament building on June 25, 2024. Several protestors were reportedly killed by police, with many others injured. Under intense pressure, Kenyan President William Ruto reversed his stance and withdrew the tax plan.

Citing the Kenyan protests as an inspiration, Ablakwa criticized President Akufo-Addo for his role in the SSNIT hotels deal. He also condemned Elizabeth Ohene, the SSNIT board chair appointed by Akufo-Addo, for justifying the deal despite widespread opposition from Ghanaians and labor representatives on the board.

“Akufo-Addo’s appointed SSNIT board chair, Elizabeth Ohene, is also boldly justifying the stinky deal despite overwhelming opposition from Ghanaians and the protest of labour reps on her board,” Ablakwa stated.

“It’s now confirmed beyond any scintilla of doubt — President Akufo-Addo is the chief architect of all the putrefying State Capture. It’s time to declare our own version of what just happened in Kenya,” he continued.

Ablakwa has called for Ghanaians to prepare for a significant demonstration, promising a major announcement soon regarding the protest plans. He assured the public that the sale of the SSNIT hotels would be actively opposed until it is halted.

Ablakwa to replicate Kenya’s protest in Ghana over sale of SSNIT hotels

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, is calling for mass demonstrations in Ghana over the sale of SSNIT hotels, drawing inspiration from the recent youth-led protests in Kenya.

The protests in Kenya successfully pressured the government to withdraw a controversial finance bill that proposed significant tax increases.

Referencing these events, Mr. Ablakwa criticized President Akufo-Addo for his unwavering support of the sale of four SSNIT Hotels to Rock City, a company owned by the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

In a social media post on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, Mr. Ablakwa highlighted that despite a meeting with organized labour earlier in the week and a demonstration dubbed ‘Hands Off Our Hotels,’ the President has maintained his stance on the sale.

Mr. Ablakwa accused the SSNIT board chair, Elizabeth Ohene, who was appointed by President Akufo-Addo, of defending the deal despite widespread opposition from Ghanaians and protests from labour representatives on the board.

He labeled President Akufo-Addo as the “chief architect” of what he describes as a controversial and unpopular deal, declaring that it is time for Ghanaians to mobilize and launch their own version of Kenya’s protests.

“President Akufo-Addo refused to stop the sale of our SSNIT hotels when he met organized labour yesterday [Tuesday],” Mr. Ablakwa stated. “Akufo-Addo’s appointed SSNIT board chair, Elizabeth Ohene, is also boldly justifying the stinky deal despite overwhelming opposition from Ghanaians and the protest of labour reps on her board.”

He urged citizens to stay tuned for a major announcement regarding plans for a significant demonstration.

“It’s now confirmed beyond any scintilla of doubt — President Akufo-Addo is the chief architect of all the putrefying State Capture. It’s time to declare our own version of what just happened in Kenya,” he posted.

The Kenyan protests escalated dramatically, leading to the burning of cars and part of the parliament building on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

Tragically, several protestors lost their lives, allegedly due to police actions, with many others injured. Facing intense pressure, Kenyan President William Ruto ultimately reversed his stance and withdrew the tax plan.

  • Parliament unanimously ratifies mining lease for Ghana Bauxite Company at Awaso

Parliament unanimously ratifies mining lease for Ghana Bauxite Company at Awaso

Parliament has unanimously ratified the mining lease granted by the Government to the Ghana Bauxite Company to operate the bauxite mine at Awaso in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.

This decision follows the presentation of a report by a joint Parliamentary Committee of Mines and Energy and Lands and Forestry on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.

The Awaso bauxite mine is a crucial component of the Government’s strategy to establish an integrated aluminium industry in Ghana.

The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC), tasked with promoting and developing the industry, has identified the Awaso mine as one of its priority projects.

Initially established over 80 years ago, the Ghana Bauxite Company has evolved through various ownership structures, including a period of government acquisition in the 1970s.

Subsequently, it underwent changes in ownership, with Canadian and later Ghanaian ownership taking the helm in recent years.

Ofori-Poku Company Limited (OPCL), a wholly Ghanaian-owned entity, acquired an 80% stake in the company in 2022, marking a historic milestone as the first time the company became entirely Ghanaian-owned.

OPCL, with significant experience in the mining sector, including operations and environmental management, has been granted a new mining lease effective May 3, 2024, covering expansive areas in Awaso.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, MP, presented the mining lease to Parliament earlier this month, adhering to constitutional requirements for Parliamentary oversight over natural resource management.

In presenting the committee’s report, Hon. Samuel Atta Akyea, Chairman of the Mines and Energy Committee, affirmed that the lease meets constitutional and legal standards, ensuring that the company has the necessary financial and technical capabilities to fulfill its obligations.

He emphasized the potential benefits of ratifying the lease, highlighting socio-economic development and employment opportunities for the local community.

Members of Parliament commended the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources for facilitating the ratification process and applauded the inclusion of plans to establish a refinery, enhancing value addition to the extracted minerals. They expressed optimism that these initiatives would positively impact Ghana’s economy and benefit its citizens.

In response, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor expressed gratitude for Parliament’s support and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to empowering Ghanaians in the mining sector. He underscored the significance of indigenous participation across the mining value chain, promising to ensure that the benefits of mining activities reach all stakeholders.

The ratification of the mining lease paves the way for the Ghana Bauxite Company to proceed with operations, securing employment for hundreds of workers and contributing to the socio-economic advancement of the region and the nation as a whole.

Nana Ama McBrown pays GHC1,800 fine for inmate jailed a year for selling stolen appliances

Nana Ama McBrown, renowned actress and TV presenter, has stepped in to assist Kwasi Abaka, a 32-year-old farmer who found himself serving a one-year jail term at the Winneba Local Prison for abetment of crime.

Abaka’s plight began when he unknowingly sold electronic appliances—comprising a home theatre, flat-screen television, woofer, and pen drive—that were later identified as stolen items.

He received these items from a friend, the son of a Chief priest at Ajumako Breman Essiam in the Central Region, who pressured him to sell them quickly to raise funds for Christmas gifts.

“I sold the TV for Ghc 600, the home theatre for Ghc 130, two pen drives for Ghc 70 each, and a Bluetooth player for Ghc 50. I was given only Ghc 100,” Abaka explained.

Unfortunately, Abaka was arrested shortly after the sale and, despite efforts from his friend and the buyer to secure bail, he remained in custody.

Eventually, he was arraigned before the court where he pleaded guilty to abetment of crime, resulting in a sentence of 12 months imprisonment when he could not afford to pay a fine of Ghc 1,800.

Moved by his story, Nana Ama McBrown, through the Crime Check Foundation, intervened to pay the fine on Abaka’s behalf. This act facilitated his release from prison, bringing relief to Abaka and his family.

This gesture from Nana Ama McBrown highlights her commitment to supporting individuals facing unjust circumstances, ensuring that they have a fair chance to rebuild their lives after experiencing hardships within the legal system.

KATH doctors at Oncology Department halt strike

Patients at the Oncology Department of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) can now breathe a sigh of relief as medical doctors have called off their strike, returning to their duties after a two-day hiatus.

The strike, which commenced on Monday, June 26, was initiated by doctors protesting the prolonged malfunction of the Linear Accelerator System (LINAC) machine.

This critical equipment is essential for cancer diagnosis and treatment but has been out of operation since October 2023, significantly impacting patient care.

The absence of medical staff during the strike left many cancer patients in distress, prompting appeals for the doctors to resume their services.

According to KATH management, steps are now being taken to address the situation, with assurances given that efforts are underway to expedite the repair or replacement of the LINAC machine.

In a statement on Joy FM’s Newsnight on Tuesday, hospital management confirmed progress in negotiations with relevant stakeholders to resolve the issue.

Kwame Frimpong, the Public Relations Officer of KATH, affirmed on Wednesday that the doctors have ended their industrial action. He acknowledged that while there are letters of credit proving arrangements with suppliers for the LINAC machine, the hospital anticipates some time before the equipment is operational.

The resolution of the strike marks a significant relief for patients who rely on the Oncology Department for crucial medical treatment amidst their battle against cancer. The return of medical services underscores the commitment of KATH to prioritize patient care, even amidst challenging operational circumstances.

“I concede” – Ruto refuses to sign Finance bill into law after deadly protests in Kenya

Kenya’s President William Ruto has declared his decision to withdraw the Finance Bill 2024 following widespread and deadly protests across the country.

The bill, which included controversial tax hikes, sparked massive demonstrations culminating in violent clashes and the torching of parliament buildings on Tuesday.

In a televised address to the nation, President Ruto acknowledged the vehement opposition from Kenyans towards the Finance Bill, stating, “Listening keenly to the people of Kenya who have said loudly that they want nothing to do with this Finance Bill 2024, I concede.”

He announced that he will not sign the bill into law, effectively withdrawing it.

The protests, which erupted nationwide, resulted in at least 22 deaths, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights. Demonstrators, predominantly young people, expressed outrage over the proposed tax increases, which they argued would exacerbate the country’s already severe cost-of-living crisis.

Initially responding with a military deployment and a stern warning against violence, President Ruto reversed course in the face of escalating public anger and condemnation. He pledged to engage in dialogue with the protesters, emphasizing their role in shaping national policy.

The unrest saw protesters storming parliament, vandalizing its interior, and setting parts of the complex ablaze. The symbolic mace, representing legislative authority, was stolen during the chaos.

Human rights organizations and international bodies condemned the use of live ammunition by security forces during the protests. Wanjeri Nderu of the International Society For Human Rights described the scene as akin to war, highlighting excessive force by police.

Catholic bishops and the Law Society of Kenya also denounced the violent crackdown on protesters and called for restraint from security forces.

In response to the escalating crisis, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep sadness over the deaths and injuries, urging Kenyan authorities to exercise restraint and ensure peaceful demonstrations.

The Finance Bill, which originally proposed taxes on essential commodities such as bread and cooking oil, as well as mobile money services and medical facilities, faced widespread opposition from various sectors of Kenyan society. With its withdrawal now confirmed, President Ruto aims to quell unrest and initiate a process of national reconciliation.

  • CBOD endorses new standard for oil and gas measurements set by Energy Ministry

CBOD endorses new standard for oil and gas measurements set by Energy Ministry

The Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD) has acknowledged the receipt of a letter from the Ministry of Energy, which was addressed to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), regarding a new standard for measurements in the oil and gas sector.

This standard was collaboratively developed by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) alongside the Ministry of Trade and Industry and other key stakeholders.

The Ministry of Energy has mandated all entities involved in revenue assurance measurements within the oil and gas sector to adhere to the new standard, a move welcomed by the CBOD.

The Chamber believes that a unified measurement system certified by the GSA will ensure the accuracy and reliability of data, which is crucial for the sector.

CBOD highlights the importance of a streamlined and well-regulated oil and gas industry. The Chamber advocates for a system where the private sector is actively involved in managing specific aspects, while the government maintains an overarching regulatory framework and enforces standards.

The Chamber proposes a standardized approach whereby meters mandated by the GSA could be installed by entities such as the Depot, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), or the Ghana Revenue Authority.

The GSA would then be responsible for the regular calibration of these meters. This approach aligns with international best practices, where standard authorities manage meter calibration to avoid duplication and reduce costs for consumers.

The GSA’s role in ensuring and maintaining standards is seen as beneficial for the state. CBOD asserts that all regulations within the sector should ultimately serve the national interest and be subject to state and regulatory oversight.

While recognizing the GRA’s efforts to ensure revenue assurance for the government, the Chamber emphasizes that any institution, whether private or public, mandated to undertake this responsibility on behalf of the government, should comply with the standards set by both the GSA and the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

This compliance is essential for ensuring a transparent and efficient measurement system within the oil and gas sector.

CBOD expresses support for the Ministry of Energy’s initiatives to lead further dialogue with relevant stakeholders. The Chamber believes that ongoing discussions will help ensure a transparent and efficient measurement system within the oil and gas sector, ultimately benefiting the entire nation.

  • Half of Ghanaian doctors now abroad over poor working conditions – Report

The latest Ghana Human Development Report, titled “The Future Value of Work in Ghana,” has raised alarms about the potential deterioration of the country’s health system if urgent measures are not taken to address the significant outflow of locally trained doctors and nurses.

The report highlights a troubling trend: 24 percent of nurses trained in Ghana are currently employed abroad due to unfavorable working conditions. The situation is even more severe for doctors, with half of the country’s trained physicians having left for better opportunities overseas.

Authored by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in collaboration with the Statistical Service and the National Development Planning Commission, the report emphasizes that the Ghanaian health sector is in a precarious state.

It calls for immediate policy and pragmatic interventions to prevent a total collapse of the healthcare system.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ghana’s health system showcased its ability to handle emergencies effectively. However, the sector continues to face significant challenges, including shortages of essential materials such as personal protective equipment (PPE) and a dwindling workforce due to the emigration of qualified health personnel.

The Global Partnership Network’s 2024 data underscores the gravity of the situation, estimating that 50 percent of doctors and 24 percent of nurses trained in Ghana are working abroad.

This migration is attributed to poor working conditions for healthcare professionals within the country. The report stresses that without prompt intervention, the already fragile health system could deteriorate further.

To address these issues, the Future of Work report outlines several strategies to make the healthcare system more responsive to the nation’s evolving health needs. As the disease burden grows more complex due to factors like environmental issues, changing age structures, and lifestyle shifts, the healthcare system must adapt accordingly.

The report identifies 11 critical areas within Ghana’s health policy that require strengthening, including health promotion, palliative care, and rehabilitative care, which have traditionally lagged behind preventive and curative care. It advocates for a greater focus on health promotion, particularly primary healthcare and environmental health, to enhance both direct and indirect impacts on human capital development.

Furthermore, the report suggests adopting a life course approach to health delivery. This approach would address the needs of various population groups, such as the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and marginalized communities in urban slums, who often cannot fully benefit from existing curative and preventive care services.

“I don’t want to be a soldier anymore!” – Alleged soldier appeals for help amidst claims of GAF’s refusal to discharge him

A man identified as Issah Kudus has publicly appealed for help, claiming that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) are refusing to grant his discharge request.

Kudus, who states he is a soldier in the second battalion of infantry, says he wants to leave the military due to personal reasons but alleges that his attempts to retire have been met with resistance.

However, it has not been confirmed if Kudus is indeed a soldier.

In a video circulating online, Kudus shared his plight, revealing that he had gone through all the official procedures to request a compassionate release from the GAF.

He submitted his resignation letter in March 2024 and underwent interviews with both his Officer Commanding (OC) and Commanding Officer (CO), where he explained his reasons for wanting to leave the military.

“I am a soldier of the second battalion of infantry. I have requested to be released from the Ghana Armed Forces and end my career as a soldier. On March 2024, I submitted a letter to the Ghana Armed Forces administratively requesting for a compassionate release,” Kudus stated. “I went through my OC’s interview and my CO’s interview and insisted I wanted to be released from the service based on personal reasons.”

Kudus emphasized that his decision is driven by personal circumstances, which have left him unable to continue his military career.

“I gave reasons explaining why I cannot be in the military again. I am the only person who knows what is around me and I don’t have the mental capacity to endure anything in the military.”

Despite following all necessary protocols and making his case clear, Kudus feels that the army is intentionally obstructing his efforts to leave.

Kudus’s plea has sparked conversations on social media, with many calling for the GAF to address his concerns and ensure that soldiers are treated with empathy and respect when they seek to leave the service.

According to JoyNews, Dr Bawumia personally informed his boss of his intention to contest the 2024 general elections with Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, as his running mate.

It is reported that the president accepted the nominee Dr Bawumia presented and offered some counsel on Tuesday night at the Jubilee House.

Sources say Dr Bawumia broke the news to President Akufo-Addo as follows:

“…He was first elected to Parliament in 2008 and won re-election in 2012, 2016 and 2020. He served on the Health Appointment and Defence and Interior Committees of Parliament.

“In 2017, President Akufo-Addo appointed him Education Minister and he now serves as the Energy Minister. The name is Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh also known as NAPO,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia was elected NPP flagbearer in December 2023 and is yet to officially communicate to the public his choice for running mate.

As this announcement remains unspoken, Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has been tipped as the front-runner in the race for the running mate position.

On June 15, 2024, a survey conducted by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) indicated that the Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh was widely preferred among party members to be the running mate to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia.

The survey engaged 5,116 NPP delegates nationwide, including national, regional, constituency, and polling station executives.

According to the study, Dr Opoku Prempeh secured 76.2% of the responses from executives polled.

Following him was the Minister of Education and MP for the Bosomtwe, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, who garnered 10.16%.

Gomoa: Man suffers swollen testicles for 10 years after sex with his angry ex in a bush

A 37-year-old man named Kwabena Ebo is facing a critical health crisis, seeking urgent assistance due to severe swelling in his testicles, which he attributes to an encounter with an ex-girlfriend in a bush.

The unusual incident reportedly took place in Gomoa Dawurampong, situated in the Gomoa West District of Ghana’s Central Region.

Recounting his ordeal in an interview with Adom News, Ebo disclosed that the incident occurred approximately a decade ago when his wife had just given birth to their newborn child.

Ebo explained that he had gone to the farm to gather food supplies when his ex-girlfriend unexpectedly appeared and coerced him into having sexual intercourse with her.

Shortly afterward, he began experiencing a burning sensation around his testicles, which gradually progressed to the development of small rashes, eventually leading to significant swelling.

Despite seeking various forms of intervention, including consultations with pastors and herbalists in search of a remedy, Ebo lamented that none of these efforts have yielded any relief, with his condition worsening as his testicles continue to enlarge. As a result, he has been largely confined to his room, struggling to move freely due to the severity of his condition.

In an emotional plea to the public, Ebo appealed for assistance from well-wishers and concerned individuals, urging them to support him in any way possible to alleviate his excruciating pain and find a solution to his health predicament.

We will account for every cedi spent during 2023 African Games – Sports Minister

Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, has reassured the public of complete transparency in accounting for expenditures related to the 2023 African Games, hosted by Ghana earlier this year.

Speaking before Parliament on Tuesday, June 25, Ussif addressed concerns regarding the financial oversight of the continental competition.

The 13th edition of the African Games took place across venues including the University of Ghana Stadium and Borteyman Sports Complex, where Ghanaian athletes showcased their talents.

During his parliamentary appearance, Minister Ussif clarified that the detailed financial account of the games was not included in his initial report due to pending parliamentary inquiries requesting a specific session for financial accountability.

“We are committed to full transparency. Every amount spent will be meticulously accounted for,” Ussif affirmed. He emphasized that there were no intentions to conceal financial details and urged the public to rest assured of comprehensive reporting.

Mustapha Ussif also highlighted Ghana’s sporting achievements, noting that the national team had secured an impressive total of 69 medals, marking a historic milestone in the country’s participation in the games.

“In addition to financial accountability, we should celebrate the remarkable achievements of our athletes who have proudly represented Ghana,” Ussif remarked, addressing the absence of official statements from the Minority congratulating Ghana’s sportsmen and women.

Rev. Kusi Boateng’s defamation suit against Ablakwa dismissed by Court of Appeal

The Court of Appeal has thrown out the defamation suit brought by Reverend Victor Kusi Boateng, who seeks to prevent Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, from discussing his involvement in the National Cathedral controversy.

This marked Rev. Kusi Boateng’s third attempt to secure an injunction against the MP after two previous rejections.

Rev. Kusi Boateng, also known as Adu Gyamfi, had his earlier applications dismissed by the Human Rights Court last July and a high court decision prior to that. Both courts found insufficient grounds to grant the injunctions he sought.

According to the court on Wednesday, June 26, the grounds of appeal failed to comply with the rules of the Court of appeal, therefore said “the grounds are incompetent and inadmissible” and struck it out.

In this appeal, Rev. Kusi Boateng‘s legal team has introduced additional arguments. On Tuesday, June 25, a new panel was constituted.

However, Thaddeus Sory, representing MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, raised objections to the appeal. He contended that the panel hearing the case is not duly constituted as per constitutional requirements, which he argues compromises his client’s right to a fair trial under Article 13 of the 1992 Constitution.

The Court of Appeal dismissed the objection raised by lawyers for the North Tongu Member of Parliament.

This, according to the court, is because the objection was based on “speculative innuendo.”

2023 African Games: You must account for $15m spent on feeding for 18 days – Minority Leader fights Majority

Ghana’s Parliament became a battleground of heated debate between the Minority and Majority groups on Tuesday, June 25, over the financial report on the 2023 African Games, which were hosted in Ghana from March 8-23, 2024.

Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif presented a report on the event to the House. However, the report lacked specific details on the expenditures incurred during the games, leading to significant criticism from the Minority in Parliament.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader, was particularly vocal, demanding a full accounting of the funds spent.

“We know for sure $15 million was allocated to a company called M and L Company Limited for 18 days of feeding, which amounts to 226 million cedis for those 18 days,” Dr. Forson asserted.

“You cannot come here and deliver a statement without accounting for $15 million for 18 days. This is public money.”

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, echoed these concerns.

“There is no mention of how much this country has spent on the games. What is the honourable minister concealing from this house? What is he hiding?” Ablakwa questioned.

In defense, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin dismissed the Minority’s criticisms, suggesting their priorities were misplaced.

“Instead of commending the Minister for a good job done, you want to use the opportunity to critique and say things that are not factual,” he said.

Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu also supported the Sports Minister, arguing that more time is needed to compile a comprehensive financial report.

“You cannot say that within two weeks or three weeks, the Minister should be able to come before this house and explain everything. The Minority Leader, fortunately, is an accountant and he understands these things,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated.

Despite the controversy over the financial details, the 2023 African Games were a significant success for Ghana, which won a total of 69 medals.

Investment worth $133k is a paltry amount, I’ve worked for 30 years – Moses Asaga reacts to OCCRP Dubai report

Former Member of Parliament for Nabdam in the Upper East Region, Moses Asaga, has refuted allegations of impropriety regarding his acquisition of a property in Dubai.

These allegations were raised by the UK-based think tank, the Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), in a report titled “How Dirty Money Finds a Home in Dubai Real Estate,” published on May 14, 2024.

The OCCRP report implicated several former appointees of the Mahama administration, including Asaga and Iusah Fuseini, suggesting that they had acquired Dubai real estate worth millions of dollars during their tenure.

The report also highlighted Dubai’s reputation for financial secrecy, which it suggested has made the city a haven for questionable funds.

In response, Mr Asaga, speaking to Accra-based Citi FM, dismissed the allegations as politically motivated. He defended his acquisition of the property, stating that it was legally purchased and within his financial means.

Mr Asaga, who has held various roles at Ecobank, GNPC, and served as Deputy Minister of Finance and Minister for Employment, challenged the narrative of wrongdoing.

“I thought I had done something criminal and corrupt worth investigating. $133,000, shouldn’t I be able to own such an investment? What are the prices of Trasaco properties $1m- $3m who are staying there? Is it not politicians and majority NPP functionaries? Has the OCCRP gone to put a story on them? This is a political machination,” Asaga asserted.

He emphasized that his career, spanning over 30 years, provided him with the means to afford such an investment. “Before politics, I worked with Ecobank, and GNPC and was Deputy Minister of Finance, Minister for Employment, and CEO of NPA. I could not afford an investment of $133,000 for a student one-bedroom apartment. What is the crime and corruption involved in this?” he questioned.

Mr Asaga further drew comparisons with the real estate market in Ghana, where new apartments sell for over $200,000 and luxury residences in areas like Trassaco can fetch between $1 million and $5 million.

“In Ghana, new apartments are being sold for $200,000 plus, and Trasaco is $1m–$5m. Who stays in them is [it] not bankers, CEOs of GNPC, COCOBOD, BOST, and politicians,” he pointed out.

President Ruto calls protests in Kenya “treasonous”

President William Ruto has announced a stringent crackdown on those protesting against the Finance Bill, labeling the demonstrations in Kenya as “treasonous.”

In a press briefing held at State House, Nairobi, the president condemned the actions of the protesters, particularly the breach of Parliament, and vowed to take decisive action against the organizers and financiers of the unrest.

President Ruto accused “dangerous people” of hijacking the discussion around the Finance Bill and causing significant disruption and damage.

“It is unfortunate that this conversation has been hijacked by dangerous people who have caused us the kind of loss witnessed today,” he stated, referring to the storming of Parliament as a “desecration of Kenya’s emblems and institutions.”

The president’s strong remarks came shortly after Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced the deployment of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to assist the National Police Service in managing the protests. Duale described the situation as a “security emergency,” underscoring the severity of the government’s response.

President Ruto emphasized that the protests were an affront to constitutionalism and the rule of law, branding the protesters as criminals.

“The government will therefore uphold its constitutional mandate to secure our nation and its development and shall treat every threat to national security and the integrity of our state as an existential danger to our republic,” he said.

He assured Kenyans of a robust and swift response to what he called “treasonous actions.”

While commending the police for their conduct during the protests, Ruto ignored allegations of police brutality against initially peaceful demonstrators, as well as reports of indiscriminate shooting outside Parliament.

He also did not address the reported abductions of pro-demonstration Kenyans, which have drawn criticism from human rights organizations.

Concerns of possible state reprisals grew throughout the evening, with reports of KDF officers being deployed to the Nairobi Central Business District.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, addressing the nation with a “heavy heart,” called for calm and restraint from the leadership and urged his successor to listen to the people.

“Listening to the people is not a choice but a mandate enshrined in the principles of our constitution and in the very basis and philosophy of democracy. Leaders must know that the power and authority they have is donated to them by the people,” Kenyatta said, appealing for understanding and dialogue.

Amid the turmoil, there were fears of media and internet shutdowns. Many Kenyans reported significantly reduced internet speeds, which network providers attributed to damage to two underwater fibre optic cables.

  • Withhold plans to travel to Kenya – Ghana High Commission cautions Ghanaians amid fierce protests

Withhold plans to travel to Kenya – Ghana High Commission cautions Ghanaians amid fierce protests

Ghana’s High Commissioner to Kenya, Damptey Bediako Asare, has issued a cautionary message to Ghanaians regarding travel to Kenya due to increasing unrest in the East African nation.

The warning follows the eruption of protests labeled “7 Days of Rage” against a controversial finance bill proposing new tax hikes.

Initially intended as peaceful demonstrations, the protests turned violent on Tuesday as clashes between protesters and security forces led to the vandalism of state properties and an attack on the Parliament building in Nairobi.

Kenya has long been a favored destination for Ghanaian tourists and business owners, especially those exploring opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Initiative, which both Ghana and Kenya have ratified.

Recently, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration announced that Ghanaian travelers would be issued an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) free of charge upon application for travel to Kenya, thanks to the existing visa-free regime agreement between the two countries. This development was expected to boost travel between Ghana and Kenya.

However, High Commissioner Damptey Bediako Asare, speaking to Joy News’ Connect Africa, advised Ghanaians to exercise caution. He emphasized the need for Ghanaians to stay informed about the situation in Kenya, especially those already in the country.

“If you are already in the country, our advice is that you keep updated with the latest news, particularly from local news outlets and international news platforms. If you are still in Kenya, it may be advisable to avoid protest areas,” he said. For those planning to travel to Kenya soon, he recommended contacting travel agents or airlines for the latest guidance and advice.

Notably, several Ghanaian Members of Parliament, mostly from the Local Government Committee, found themselves amidst the chaos in Kenya’s Parliament when the protests outside turned violent.

A video captured by Asuogyaman MP Thomas Ampen Nyarko showed MPs, including Sylvester Tetteh (MP for Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro), Emmanuel Akwasi Gyamfi, and Nii Lante Vanderpuye, being escorted to safety. The delegation also included Anita Quartey-Papafio, a parliamentary clerk in charge of Governance Cluster Committees.

Despite the tense situation, High Commissioner Damptey assured that there have been no reported casualties or incidents involving Ghanaian nationals in Kenya so far.

“There’s no unfortunate incident involving any Ghanaian or any member of the Ghanaian community so far,” he stated.

The protests have already claimed at least ten lives, with paramedics expecting the death toll to rise as clashes between police and protesters continue.

The unrest has brought businesses and transportation to a standstill across various cities and towns in Kenya.

The finance bill, which introduces several unpopular taxes, has ignited a youth-led protest movement demanding its repeal. Despite the government’s concessions on some contentious measures, including exempting bread and imported sanitary items from the proposed taxes, public anger remains high.

Protesters argue that the new taxes would disproportionately burden the poorest citizens, exacerbating their financial struggles. Scenes of ambulances ferrying the injured from the streets have become all too common in recent days.

GRA fines Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotel for lying about tax return

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has presented evidence that Rock City Hotel, owned by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, misrepresented its tax returns, leading to a fine from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

This revelation follows Ablakwa’s opposition to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust’s (SSNIT) decision to sell 60 percent of its shares in four hotels to Rock City Hotel.

In a recent interview on Accra-based Metro TV, Ablakwa disclosed documents indicating that Rock City Hotel reported to the GRA on March 12, 2021, expecting to incur losses for that year. However, Ablakwa alleged that the hotel failed to file tax returns for the entire year of 2022, further questioning the hotel’s financial transparency.

Minister Bryan Acheampong had previously refuted Ablakwa’s claims, challenging him to provide evidence. In response, Ablakwa revealed that Rock City Hotel only rectified their tax obligations after his exposé brought their financial discrepancies to public attention.

The hotel rushed to the GRA on May 23, 2024, and declared profits for 2022, a significant shift from their initial loss declaration.

“On March 12, 2021, they posted returns stating they would incur losses for the year. Two years later, on March 9, 2023, they reported a debit adjustment for two withholding taxes amounting to GH¢20,782. For the entire year of 2022, there were no filings at all,” Ablakwa disclosed.

This abrupt change in financial reporting raised significant concerns about Rock City Hotel’s business practices. The GRA fined the hotel GH¢4,390 for their late filings, following their sudden declaration of profits instead of losses. This fine further substantiates Ablakwa’s claims that the hotel’s financial practices were questionable and inconsistent.

Mr Ablakwa also questioned how Rock City Hotel managed to obtain a tax clearance certificate to participate in the SSNIT bid when they hadn’t filed taxes for two years. He emphasized that the company’s actions were a direct reaction to his exposé, highlighting a pattern of irregular financial reporting.

“So, it means that when they put in the bid, they clearly didn’t have a tax clearance certificate. After my exposé, they went to the GRA on May 23, 2024, and declared profits, resulting in a tax liability of GH¢395,000. They were also fined GH¢4,390 for their late filings,” Ablakwa elaborated.

He further criticized the purchase decision, arguing that Labadi Beach Hotel, one of the hotels involved in the SSNIT transaction, was notably more profitable.

“Labadi Beach Hotel reported profits of one hundred and fifty-eight million, yet Rock City Hotel, which claimed it would make no profits, is now poised to buy it. This is inconsistent and troubling,” he stated.

Rock City went back to GRA to declare profit after my exposè – Okudzeto

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has presented compelling evidence challenging the financial integrity of Rock City Hotel.

The MP’s exposé suggests that Rock City Hotel, owned by Bryan Acheampong, Minister for Food and Agriculture, initially reported operating losses but later amended their financial records to declare a profit after Ablakwa’s revelations.

Mr Ablakwa’s disclosure comes amid his strong opposition to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust’s (SSNIT) decision to sell 60 percent of its shares in four hotels, including the more profitable Labadi Beach Hotel, to Rock City Hotel.

Mr Ablakwa substantiated his claims with documents indicating Rock City Hotel’s financial struggles, directly contradicting Acheampong’s assertions that his hotel was not operating at a loss.

“On March 12, 2021, Rock City Hotel posted returns stating they would incur losses for the year,” Ablakwa revealed during an interview on Accra-based Metro TV.

He further alleged that the hotel failed to file tax returns with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for the entire year of 2022.

According to Mr Ablakwa, it was only after his exposé brought these financial discrepancies to light that Rock City Hotel rushed to rectify their tax obligations.

Mr Ablakwa detailed how, on March 9, 2023, Rock City Hotel reported a debit adjustment for two withholding taxes amounting to GH¢20,782. However, no tax filings were made for the entire year of 2022. He questioned how the hotel managed to obtain a tax clearance certificate to participate in the SSNIT bid without filing taxes for two years.

In response to Ablakwa’s exposé, Rock City Hotel went to the GRA on May 23, 2024, and declared profits for 2022, a significant departure from their initial loss declaration.

“After my exposé, they went to the GRA and declared profits instead of losses, resulting in a tax liability of GH¢395,000. They were also fined GH¢4,390 for their late filings,” Ablakwa elaborated.

Mr Ablakwa emphasized that Rock City Hotel’s actions were reactionary to his exposé, highlighting the company’s sudden shift in financial reporting.

He noted that the hotel only filed its taxes on April 20, 2024, after the first quarter, indicating anticipated losses for that year. This raised significant concerns about their business practices.

The MP further criticized the SSNIT purchase decision, arguing that Labadi Beach Hotel, one of the hotels involved in the transaction, was notably more profitable. “Labadi Beach Hotel reported profits of one hundred and fifty-eight million, yet Rock City Hotel, which claimed it would make no profits, is now poised to buy it. Kwaku Annan threatens to expose Rev. Lawrence Tetteh and Boadi Nyamekye

Justice Kwaku Annan, the former host of “The Seat Show” on Net2 TV and now with CTV, has issued a stern warning to Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, President of Worldwide Miracle Outreach (WMO), and Dr. Michael Boadi Nyamekye, General Overseer of The Maker’s House Chapel International.

Annan claims he is prepared to reveal a series of alleged wrongdoings involving the two prominent religious figures.

Annan alleges that Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, while preparing for a crusade in Congo, engaged in an inappropriate act with a woman via WhatsApp. Upon initiating an investigation into the matter, Annan claims Rev. Tetteh contacted Bishop Quaye of Christian Action Faith Ministries.

Subsequently, Rev. Tetteh reportedly withdrew from the public eye, while Bishop Quaye worked to suppress the story at Hot FM. Annan asserts that the bishop met with the radio station’s owner at Trassacco at 5 a.m., successfully burying the story.

Annan has raised further allegations against Rev. Tetteh, questioning his involvement in impregnating a woman in London and his business dealings with gospel musician Sonnie Badu.

“Lawrence Tetteh, have you impregnated someone’s wife in London? What was the business between you and Soni Badu? How much was involved and how much did you take away?” Annan inquired, adding that he is prepared to face any consequences, including imprisonment, to reveal the truth.

In addition to his accusations against Rev. Tetteh, Annan has turned his attention to Dr. Michael Boadi Nyamekye.

While he did not specify the nature of his investigation into Dr. Boadi Nyamekye, Annan warned that by the time he is finished, Dr. Boadi Nyamekye will suffer a significant blow to his credibility. Annan issued a direct message to Dr. Boadi Nyamekye: “Do not try to use my face like a rug to mop the floor. I don’t hate him.”

Annan’s accusations have sparked widespread attention and controversy, highlighting the potential fallout from his promised exposés. The allegations, if substantiated, could have significant repercussions for both religious leaders and their respective ministries.

This ruling, delivered by Justice Richard Kugyapaw on Monday, June 24, is in response to a legal challenge by the current Member of Parliament (MP), Hajia Lariba Zuweratu, against the election results.

Dr. Kabiru, a 35-year-old PhD holder and special advisor to the Vice President, emerged victorious in a closely contested primary held in January.

He narrowly defeated Hajia Lariba by securing 345 votes against her 338, in an election conducted under tight security and attended by regional and constituency executives.

Following the primary, Hajia Lariba disputed the results, filing an ex parte motion at the Tamale High Court. She accused Dr. Kabiru, the party, and the Electoral Commission of electoral irregularities and misconduct, seeking an injunction to prevent Dr. Kabiru from declaring himself the winner.

The court has now granted this request, barring Dr. Kabiru from assuming the position.

In addition to Dr. Kabiru and Hajia Lariba, two other candidates participated in the primary: Tahiru Sham-Una, who received 145 votes, and Jangdoo Mahama, who received 1 vote.

Initially, the NPP, named as a third defendant, attempted to have the case dismissed on the grounds that Hajia Lariba had not exhausted the party’s internal conflict resolution mechanisms before approaching the court.

Prior to this ruling, NPP supporters in the Walewale constituency held a press conference urging the party’s Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to intervene and resolve the dispute.

They warned that a prolonged conflict could harm the party’s chances in the upcoming general elections.

In March, the High Court granted the NPP’s request to settle the dispute out of court. However, in a session on March 15, the court declined to dismiss the case and fined the party GH¢8000. Despite agreeing to an out-of-court settlement, the court has now intervened with an injunction against Dr. Kabiru, underscoring the ongoing tensions within the party.
