Reggie Zippy and his wife divorced after 15 years of marriage

Ghanaian musician Reggie Zippy, who lives in the UK, and his wife, Edith Ward, have divorced after 15 years of marriage.

Reggie broke the news in a lengthy Instagram post, ironically detailing how he is sick of being underappreciated and called a bad father among other things.

The content of his post gave the impression that he had accepted his fate and his wife’s constant teasing, even though it is unclear what actually caused the divorce.

“I just want to keep this simple and straight to my point so kindly bear with me. As of Friday 11th, August 2023, at 12:00noon, I am no longer a married man after 15 years of being extremely irresponsible and wicked towards my children and their mother and I apologize to them for my unacceptable behavior as a very foolish father and husband, it was all my fault, I should have known better instead of caring for my children or family. going forward.

“Any woman you see me with is not a side-chick or mistress. I am now a single man who has the freedom and right to live my life and date any woman I want to, especially when she loves me and treats me with respect and gratitude for the little things in any beautiful relationship. After 15 years of being a very useless, selfish, arrogant, manipulative, abusive, gaslighting and heartless father of 3 beautiful children, I have finally accepted that I Reggie Halm am such a horrible human being who doesn’t deserve to ever see or speak to his children because I am a very irresponsible man and father,” parts of his post read.

In the meantime, Reggie’s post has sparked a great deal of worry among friends, coworkers, and fans throughout the entertainment industry.

His followers received the news with shock considering the fact that he usually paints a ‘perfect picture’ of his family on social media.

In the comments section, others have flocked to comfort and sympathise with him.

It can be recalled that exactly two years ago, in August 2021, Reggie Zippy took to social media to announce the death of his mother.

The singer was seen in a few widely circulated videos sobbing uncontrollably at the funeral on November 13, 2021.

Romeo Lavia’s transfer from Southampton confirmed by Chelsea

Romeo Lavia‘s transfer from Southampton to Chelsea has been finalised.

The midfielder informed his club on Monday that he preferred a transfer to Stamford Bridge over a move to Liverpool, who had an identical £58 million proposal approved. On Tuesday night, a deal was completed for the player to join the west London club.

Lavia had a physical yesterday before joining the team as the eighth first-team acquisition of the summer, and he is now a candidate to make his debut against West Ham on Sunday.

Along with Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, the 19-year-old is poised to play a crucial role in a modern engine room, and he is eager to get started.

Lavia expressed his excitement about his new teammates and their potential to help him achieve great things when his move was complete.

“I’m thrilled to work with Chelsea and take part in this intriguing initiative. I’m very eager to start since it’s a fantastic football team with a rich history.

Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, the co-sporting directors, said they were delighted to welcome Romeo to Chelsea. He showed his talent in the Premier League at Southampton last year, displaying maturity despite his youth, and is a player we have been keeping an eye on for some time.

“We think he is prepared to make an impact at Chelsea throughout the current season and in the years to come,” the statement continued.

Lavia moved to St. Mary’s from Manchester City last summer, but he only stayed for one season. Before his move to Chelsea was finalised, he sent a touching farewell note.

On Instagram, he posted: “To Saints Fans. I want to thank you so much for everything you have provided me during my stay here as I say farewell.

Despite the fact that we didn’t accomplish our mutual objectives, I could feel your affection right away. I hope I was able to repay the faith you exhibited in me. I’ll never forget the belief the club and Saints all around the world showed in me.

I would especially like to thank all of my teammates and club staff members, whether they were directly involved in my development as a football player, athlete, or person, for supporting me ever since the day I stepped foot on the Staplewood Campus and for all the daily work and assistance behind the scenes.

“You all have contributed greatly to making my transition into real professional football easier,” I said.

Kenyan sets himself ablaze due to high cost living

On Thursday afternoon in the seaside city of Mombasa, a Kenyan man allegedly set himself on fire in protest at the exorbitant expense of living.

He lit himself on fire after ascending a statue in the midst of a busy roundabout. The man is seen clutching the Kenyan flag in a video that has since gone viral. He then shouts, and a second later, a massive flame engulfs him.

He was saved by witnesses who swiftly assisted in putting out the fire, and he was then rushed to the nearby Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.

The unidentified man explained to onlookers that he was protesting the high cost of living and the “stolen” presidential election from the previous year, in which Raila Odinga lost to President William Ruto. In court, the victory was affirmed, and Mr. Odinga’s charges of irregularities were rejected.

In recent weeks, dozens of people have died in Kenya as a result of police crackdowns on large-scale demonstrations calling for election reforms and an end to inflation.

South Africa parties agree to work together to overthrow ANC

In an effort to unseat the ruling African National Congress (ANC) in the 2024 elections, seven political groups in South Africa have formed an alliance.

According to the Multi-Party Charter for South Africa, if elected, the parties would cooperate to distribute ministerial and parliamentary seats.

Additionally, they want to prevent Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party from winning the election.

The main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) party spearheaded the accord, which comes as the nation struggles with a failing economy, crime, corruption, unemployment, and an unparalleled energy crisis.

Seven political parties in South Africa have joined together to form an alliance in an effort toThe Spectrum National Party, United Independent Movement, Freedom Front Plus, Inkatha Freedom Party, Independent SA National Civic Organisation, and ActionSA are the other signatories.

According to the new coalition, invitations will be sent to additional parties as soon as possible.

Analysts claim that for the first time since South Africa’s return to democracy in 1994, the ANC may lose its legislative majority.

However, if the new bloc wins the election, it has not yet decided who will be chosen as president.

South Africa to receive president of China on a state visit

South African officials have confirmed that Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit their country next week and attend the Brics conference while there.

Brics, which stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is sometimes viewed as a replacement for the G7 group of industrialised nations.

After a state visit to Russia in March, Mr. Xi will be travelling abroad for the second time this year.

It comes as the heads of the Brics states are scheduled to meet next week and discuss prospective membership expansion. Several African nations, including Algeria, Egypt, and Ethiopia, have previously expressed a desire to join the union.

Questions about whether the president of Russia would personally attend the conference initially cast a shadow over it; however, the presidency of South Africa later clarified that he would not.

Because South Africa is a signatory to the ICC and is consequently obligated to assist in his arrest, if Mr. Putin had left Russian territory, he would have been subject to an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest order because of the war in Ukraine.

Constitutional rule will be restored at all cost in Niger – ECOWAS

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that democratic governance is restored in Niger.

Speaking at the ECOWAS military chiefs meeting held in Accra on Thursday, August 17, 2023, the Commissioner for political affairs, peace and security, Abdel-Fatau Musah, said ECOWAS is steadfastly committed to ensuring the restoration of constitutional governance.

“The fundamental issue is that ECOWAS is protecting its protocols. When ECOWAS deployed a standby force to the Gambia to make sure that a president who had lost elections vacated the presidency nobody made noise. Today, they are saying why are you intervening in Niger?

His remarks follow the Niger coup and subsequent reactions to the coup, especially from the ECOWAS.

ECOWAS has threatened to resort to force if Niger refuses to release the detained Nigerien President, Mohamed Bazoum.

He noted that concerns have been raised with regards where the Community will get resources to embark on the move and said these concerns though genuine have already been addressed.

“So serious interests are at stake here but that is not going to divert ECOWAS attention. We just want to inform them about the results of the ECOWAS heads of States and Governments to make sure that by all means available constitutional order will be restored in the country. And this meeting today, bears testimony to that,” he stressed.

“People are telling us where are we going to get the resources from? ECOWAS is being teleguided by the West, it is being teleguided by France and by anybody but what they forget is that ECOWAS is a rules based organization. We have our protocols, we have our norms and we are ready to protect them. If push comes to shove we are going into Niger with our own contingent owned equipment,” he noted.

  • Irish government criticised of disrespecting investigation

Irish government criticised of disrespecting investigation

Judge’s request for a public investigation into the Omagh explosion on both sides of the border has been referred to as “disrespectful” by the Irish government.

Some families who lost loved ones in the 1998 massacre are represented by attorney John McBurney.

After a minister said there is no new evidence to warrant a public inquiry in the Republic of Ireland, he urged on Dublin to reconsider.

The Real IRA attack resulted in the deaths of 29 individuals, including a mother who was expecting twins.

The UK government should launch a new investigation to see whether the attack might have been avoided in 2021, according to High Court judge Mr. Justice Horner.

He additionally exhorted the Irish government to follow suit.

An independent statutory inquiry will be conducted, Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris stated earlier this year.

Finalising its terms of reference is currently underway.

The incident has already been the subject of several investigations in Ireland, according to Peter Burke, the Irish Minister for European Affairs and Defence, who made this statement on Wednesday.

He said: “That is our position at the moment.” He continued by saying that the Nally Report had not uncovered any noteworthy new information that called for the opening of an investigation.

Mr. Burke stated that Dublin would fully assist the UK investigation.

According to Mr. McBurney, who represents a few family members in the Families Moving On victims’ support organisation, “On behalf of my clients, I wish to communicate the sense of astonishment and sadness felt upon hearing the hint by minister Burke during a BBC interview.

“The Nally Report lacked the required authority to completely investigate all issues, therefore many questions still need to be answered.

“A full investigation in both jurisdictions was required in order to fully deal with the matter, as Lord Justice Horner made quite clear in a very detailed judgement,” the judge wrote.

Earlier this week, a memorial service was conducted in Omagh to honour the bombing victims who perished 25 years ago.

“It is crucial that the Irish government urgently considers how disrespectful and unsatisfactory it is to ignore the obvious need, in conjunction with a statutory inquiry in Northern Ireland, to properly investigate by public inquiry all outstanding matters, as explained in the judgement of Lord Justice Horner,” Mr. McBurney continued.

“There is now a request for reconsideration of the unfavourable attitude stated by minister Burke, as well as a promise that a joint inquiry will be opened in the Republic of Ireland.

“It is difficult to see how any other arrangement can properly probe all aspects,” the statement reads.

The Irish government needs to step forward.

Kevin Skelton, whose wife Philomena perished in the Omagh blast, questioned the Irish government’s willingness to cooperate with any investigation and claimed that it “only reveals what it wants to.”

“There were people convicted in a civil court,” he continued. “The bomb was made in the south of Ireland, the people who brought it in were from the south of Ireland.”

It is time to act morally correct, and the Irish government needs to stand up.

25 years after the catastrophe, Mr. Skelton claimed that “the bomb is still going off every day” for him.

“Now that it’s been brought to an end, people can move on and have whatever life we have left to live in relative peace,” he continued.

I personally can’t handle much more, and I’m sure there are families out there that feel the same, therefore I don’t want to have to worry about what is on the TV when you turn it on.

Following a series of studies and investigations in the Republic which “warranted the establishment of a public inquiry in Ireland,” the Irish Department of Justice informed BBC News NI that “no new evidence emerged.”

The Irish government is concerned that by the end of the UK probe, there won’t be any unresolved issues pertaining to the Omagh bombing that can only be addressed at this time, they added.

The Irish government will cooperate fully with the UK probe in this matter.

Nigeria to provide food as cost of living rises

The Nigerian government has given the go-ahead for the distribution of 5 billion naira ($6.5 million; £5.1 million) to each of the nation’s 36 states and the federal capital for the purchase of food goods for the underprivileged.

In addition, bags of rice, corn, and fertiliser will be distributed, the governor of Nigeria’s northwestern Borno state, Babagana Zulum, told the media after a meeting of the National Economic Council at the presidential residence in the nation’s capital, Abuja.

The action is a part of efforts to reduce the rising cost of living, which is a result of President Bola Tinubu’s decision to end gasoline subsidies shortly after we came to power in May.

Since then, food costs have more than doubled and fuel prices have increased by 200%. As a result, the president last month declared a state of emergency due to food insecurity and announced measures to improve small enterprises, manufacturing, and accessible transportation.

President Tinubu said that by eliminating subsidies, the government was able to save more than 1 trillion naira ($1.2 billion).

Museveni criticises the “insufferable” World Bank once more

Yoweri Museveni, president of Uganda, has once more denounced the World Bank’s decision to stop providing funds, stating that the institution is misguided if it believes that the action will scare Ugandans.

He said this in a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

The World Bank was described by Mr. Museveni as “shallow and intolerable imperialist actors who do not know where to stop” on Thursday.

The World Bank cut off funds to Uganda last week.

due to a contentious anti-homosexuality law that was approved in May and went against the principles of the World Bank.

The law has garnered criticism from all over the world for its severe penalties, which include imprisonment or execution for those who commit specific same-sex behaviours.

Last week, Mr. Museveni responded to the World Bank by accusing it of trying to force Uganda to change the legislation by stopping funds, but he said that Uganda will still advance even without the World Bank’s assistance.

Mr. Museveni reaffirmed on Thursday that the financial withdrawal will not stop Uganda’s economic progress. The World Bank’s dramatic action, he said, would actually help Uganda’s efforts to lower its external debt and increase its independence.

Even while Uganda still has a number of Western supporters, Mr. Museveni claimed that they are afraid to continue their support for his country.

Politicians don’t care about what happens to Ghana’s Education system – Angel Carbonu

The President of the National Graduate Association of Teachers (NAGRAT), Mr. Angel Carbonu is off the view that Ghana’s Education system is in tatters because the children of politicians do not attend public schools.

He pointed out that the majority of politicians send their kids to the best schools in the nation or abroad and do not care about how public schools are doing because they are attending private schools.

Angel Carbonu made this known in an interview on Accra-based OKAY FM.

In an interview with Okay FM, he indicated that politicians have the data and are aware of the challenges encountered in the various public schools, but since they don’t affect them directly, they have ignored the problems and left them to persist.

“They don’t enroll their children in public basic schools, so they don’t care what goes on there or the challenges pupils have to surmount. They know the problems; they have the intelligence and security people. The question is that they don’t care,” he said.

He continued, “If a prominent person had died in the area, they would have found funding to asphalt the roads or help build the school there, so how come there is a school in a community in a deprived state and nothing can’t be done? We are losing our priorities as a people, and I think there is no leadership”.

“We will need to start some level of agitation to get GetFund working for the people. There will be a need for a review so that no government can come and dip their hands into the fund away from what the fund is meant for,” he said.

Nollywood actress Scarlet Gomez shares stillbirth experience

Nollywood actress, Scarlet Gomez has spoken out about having a stillbirth in response to Debbie Shokoya’s baby dying at birth.

As previously reported by Naija News, Debbie spoke about the death of her eight-month-old child at birth in a video that was uploaded to her YouTube page on Thursday.

The actress claimed she went to the US in the hopes of bringing her unborn child back with her, but she miscarried.

Recounting her ordeal, she said her family members have encouraged her to move on, and she is currently trying to let go and grieve the way she wants.

The actress said she was rushed to an emergency ward after it was discovered that the baby wasn’t breathing again, and she was induced.

Debbie continued, crying as she described the sacrifices she had made throughout the pregnancy, “I gave birth to my child dead.”

Reacting to the video via an Instagram page, Scarlet Gomez, shared a similar experience, saying she also gave birth to a dead child at nine months.

According to the movie star, she never saw or carried the child and to date, she does not know what the child looked like.

She further encouraged Debbie and assured her that God would give her the strength to heal and make her smile again.

She wrote: “Carried mine for 9 months even gave birth to him. Never saw or carried him. To date don’t know what he looked like. You are not alone sis! It’s not easy at all. God will give you the strength you need and you will smile again”

Shatta Wale calls for the arrest of Cecilia Dapaah

Ghanaian dancehall musician Shatta Wale is demanding the arrest of Cecilia Dapaah, a former minister of sanitation, in connection with the $1 million theft scandal and its fallout.

In a recent Instagram live video where he bemoaned the state of the music business and the country as a whole, he said this.

He questioned why the sanitation minister was not held solely responsible and that the focus was instead turned to the house helpers who were accused of stealing the money.

“Look at our politicians, they aren’t studying politics they’re studying the foolishness of Ghanaians. That is why the sanitation minister can have a million dollars stolen from her house and everyone is talking about the house help who stole the money rather than asking why the minister has 1 million dollars in her house,” he questioned.

“That is why they will come and take the money we’ve worked hard for in the form of taxes and they will put in their houses for their house helps to steal. The sanitation minister should be arrested and jailed for keeping that money in her house, not the house help. How many years has she worked to have that kind of money in her house?” he demanded.

According to Shatta Wale, anyone who enters politics is only acting in their own self-interest and not that of the nation.

    https://www.tiktok.com/@fred_scorpeeshowbizarena/video/7268360680280034566

“The politicians know that you can’t tell them their faults, and that is why they can do whatever they want. Anybody you see going into politics is going for the money, not in the interest of the people. All of them, apart from me. As you are in Ghana, just pray, because this country will never change, the money will keep going wherever it’s going,” he said.

He made these remarks in response to recent revelations that two housekeepers stole $1,000,000, $300,000, and other items from the home of Madam Cecilia Dapaah, the former Minister of Sanitation.

Following the uproar, the Office of the Special Prosecutor searched her home and bank accounts and found a number of different sums of money.

  • Georgia probes jury threats against Trump

Georgia probes jury threats against Trump

Georgia state authorities are looking into online threats made against members of the grand jury that on Monday indicted Donald Trump.

Right-wing forums were used to disseminate private information, including the addresses and pictures of the jurors.

The Fulton County Sheriff‘s Office declared that it was aware of the threats and that it was looking for individuals responsible.

In Georgia, it is customary to reveal the names of the jurors in an indictment.

However, after the jurors’ identities were made public, followers of the former president Trump reportedly gathered online data and shared images and addresses to forums, including the social media platform Telegram.

It happens shortly after the jury decided to indict Mr. Trump on 13 counts, including racketeering and interference in political campaigns. He claims that the accusations are made for political reasons.

Officials claimed that in addition to threats made against jurors, personal information about individuals was also exchanged. According to the police, the threats may have intimidated the jurors.

According to a statement from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, “our investigators are closely collaborating with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to track down the source of threats in Fulton County and other jurisdictions.”

It stated that they take the situation seriously and will act immediately to protect the safety of the jury.

One individual posted a remark on Facebook saying, “I thought it only fair to share a few names from that grand jury.”

The article was later taken down; it had listed numerous jurors’ potential residences and phone numbers.

Other comments made by users on Mr. Trump’s website, Truth social, urged followers to “make sure [the jurors] can’t walk down the street” and to “make them infamous.”

According to reports, some posts contain violent speech directed towards Fani Willis, the Georgia prosecutor in charge of Mr. Trump’s case.

According to the Reuters news agency, two NBC News journalists who wrote about the grand jury event also had their own alleged addresses released online.

The distribution of juror information as a “hit list” was denounced by Media Matters, a nonprofit organisation that keeps an eye on conservative media outlets.

Georgia stands out from other states in the US court system because it discloses the identities of the jurors, ostensibly to increase public trust in the justice system.

However, they don’t divulge their addresses or any other private information.

Mr. Trump, who is currently the front-runner for the Republican nomination to run for president in the election of 2024, has frequently criticised the strongest accusations made against him.

US prosecutors claimed earlier this month that a post he made on Truth was meant to frighten those connected to a case against him.

A lady in Texas has been charged with making a murderous threat against a judge who is in charge of another lawsuit against Mr. Trump.

A few hours before the president arrived in Utah last week, FBI agents shot and killed an armed man in Utah who had allegedly threatened Joe Biden with death. He was discovered by federal officials as a result of a threat he made on Truth Social. The business informed the National Threat Operations Centre of the FBI.

A Canadian woman who sent ricin-laced mail to Donald Trump when he was president was sentenced to 22 years in prison on Thursday in the US.

  • “15,000 names of minors and foreigners removed from voter list” – Jean Mensa

“15,000 names of minors and foreigners removed from voter list” – Jean Mensa

The Electoral Commission of Ghana’s Chairperson, Jean Mensa, revealed that the work of a review committee the Commission formed resulted in the removal of 15,000 names of minors and foreigners from the voters register.

Following the experience of the Commission in the 2020 elections, the EC established a review commission that worked assiduously to remove the names of illegible voters.

Speaking at a press conference on district-level elections, she added that things like this are the reason the EC proposed the use of the Ghana Card as the sole document for registration onto the voters register.

“Indeed, a credible voters register is (sic) for a credible election. As a Commission that is determined to conduct credible, transparent, fair and peaceful elections, we were keen to establish and uphold the integrity of the foundational document, which is the voters register, hence our proposal to use the Ghana Card as the sole document for identification of a person’s citizenship, as well as age.

“Our experience from the 2020 registrations exercise showed the several minors and foreigners, using the window of the guarantor system, found their way onto our roll. To rid the register of minors and foreigners in 2020, the Electoral Commission established the District Registration Review Committees which worked for several weeks to delete the names of minors and foreigners from the register… during the registration, some 40,000 minors and foreigners were challenged, and we managed to expunge some 15,000 minors and foreigners from the register,” she explained.

Theo Walcott quits professional football at age 34

Theo Walcott, at the age of 34, has declared his retirement from the game of professional football.

After a 23-year career in which he made 397 Premier League appearances, Walcott hangs up his boots.

“I’m going to put my boots away for good. I won’t lie; it’s quite worrisome,” Walcott added.

“I’ve only known football since I was 16 or maybe younger, so it’s scary. I want to explore new things because I feel like I missed out on a lot growing up.

“Things [usually] revolve around football for me. I just feel like I want to experience life.”

Walcott won two Community Shields and three FA Cups during his 13 years with the Gunners.

He gained notoriety in 2006 when, at the age of 17, he was unexpectedly chosen for Sven Goran Eriksson’s England World Cup squad.

For England, Walcott made 47 appearances over the course of a ten-year international career, scoring eight goals.

Walcott believes he had offers from other clubs to continue playing but that his “heart isn’t committed” to it. Walcott, a free agent who made 20 Premier League appearances and scored three goals for Southampton last season as the club was relegated, claims he received offers from other clubs.

“I’ve received offers from top Championship teams and from abroad. Although there have been some Saudi offers, Walcott remarked, “I don’t see myself playing there.

Nothing against the money or the league, but if I’m not playing football from the bottom of my heart, it’s unfair to the clubs and unfair to me.
Walcott, 16, scores Saints’ first FA Cup goal as they defeat MK Dons.

Before joining Southampton in 2000, Walcott was a young player for Newbury and Swindon Town.

As a 16-year-old making his Saints debut in 2005, he scored against Leeds United to become the team’s youngest ever goal scorer.

Before joining Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal in 2006, Walcott made 21 appearances and scored four goals for the Saints.

He scored 108 goals in 397 games for the Gunners before making a £20 million transfer to Everton in 2019.

Before returning to Southampton two years later, Walcott played 85 appearances for the Toffees and scored 11 goals throughout that time.

Rex Omar opens up about why he quit church

Ghanaian highlife musician Rex Omar has recently explained why he stopped going to church in a recent interview.

The artist reminisced about his past as a committed Christian who actively participated in various church activities.

Rex Omar recalled how he made a positive impact on the church by using his singing abilities.

However, things changed when he went to his pastor to ask for help from the church board to pay for his studio recording endeavours.

During an interview on Accra-based Asaase Radio, Rex Omar revealed that his pastor indicated that the church board, after thorough discussions, had concluded that they could not allocate church funds to aid his studio sessions.

He said this experience marked the turning point that led him to cease attending church.

“Later, Pastor told me that the church board has sat down and they said we can’t use church money for recording”, he said on Thursday.

The highlife artiste reminisced how a ‘worldly person’ rather sponsored his recording.

He stated how he felt about going to church and using his talent only to receive mouthful blessings but not when needed in kind.

In a recent interview, Rex Omar said he sees no point in spending his time writing gospel songs from the same Bible his pastor preached if he doesn’t receive financial support from the church.

  • Only woman on 10,000 km Accra-London road trip speaks on why she chose to be a mechanic

Only woman on 10,000 km Accra-London road trip speaks on why she chose to be a mechanic

Nana Afua Serwaa Adusei, also known as Shecanic, stood out as a remarkable member of the Wanderlust team that recently achieved a historic cross-continental journey from Accra to London.

Being the sole female participant, she also served as the engineer for the 13 vehicles during their passage through several African nations on their way to Europe.

As a mechanic engineer on a mission to master the mechanics of automobiles across diverse terrains and climates, Nana Afua Serwaa Adusei, scored high marks for the role that she played in the success of the team.

In an interview with Accra-based Asaase Radio (August 17, 2023) she opened up on why she took the career path of becoming becoming a mechanic.

She said, the widely held notion that it was people that failed at conventional education who turn to technical or vocational training was her major motivation, stressing that she wanted to be the classic case of the fact that technical education was a forte that people should venture in even if they excel in the formal sphere.

“You know in our times, technical vocation is left for school dropouts and I felt that is not right because it takes a lot of wit and intelligence to work on a car. The engine of a vehicle is more complicated than that of the aeroplane.

“Why should we allow society to dictate that if you fail formal education, go into technical or vocational school? she quizzed.

“So, I felt that let me get into that space and become a representative, that we don’t need to do that, there is more to technical and vocational education that what we see,” she added.

On how she got on board the expedition, she said all it took was a message offering mechanical service.

“Before the trip, I sent a message to the group that I would like to service their car for free. So they asked me to jump on and come with them,” she disclosed.

  • Belarus would employ nuclear weapons in event of ‘aggression’ – Lukashenko

Belarus would employ nuclear weapons in event of ‘aggression’ – Lukashenko

President Alexander Lukashenko stated on Thursday that Belarus would be willing to use the nuclear weapons provided by close ally Russia in the event of foreign “aggression” as tensions along the country’s borders with NATO countries increase.

Moscow has used Belarus as one of its launchpads for the invasion in early 2022, and joint Russia-Belarus military training over the past year have stoked worries that Belarusian troops could join Russian forces in the battle. Minsk has played a significant role in Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Belarus apparently received Russian nuclear warheads in June for “deterrence,” according to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Lukashenko asserted Belarus would “never get involved in this war” until Ukrainians crossed its border in an interview with the state news service Belta. But he added, “We will keep helping Russia, they are our ally.”

He also said that Belarus will “immediately respond with everything we have,” including nuclear weapons, if provoked, particularly by NATO neighbours Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia.

Although senior officials from the US Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) said they had “no reason to doubt” Putin’s claim, it is unclear how much of Russia’s nuclear arsenal was recently transported to Belarus, and US and Western officials have not publicly confirmed that any weapons have been transferred.

In an interview, Lukashenko stated that Belarus would not “tarry, wait, and the rest” if it were to come under attack. We’ll employ every weapon in our arsenal to deter.

He continued, “We didn’t bring nuclear weapons here to frighten someone. “Yes, nuclear weapons do serve as a potent deterrent. But these aren’t strategic nuclear weapons; they’re tactical. As soon as hostilities are initiated against us, we will employ them right away.

In July, senior DIA officials stated they did not think Lukashenko would have any influence over the weapons, which they believed would most certainly be completely under Russian control.

With Belarus’ northern neighbours on edge due to the presence of the Russian mercenary organisation Wagner, which is stationed in Belarus in the wake of its brief uprising in Russia earlier this summer, Lukashenko’s most recent remarks come as the security environment in Europe becomes more unstable.

In an apparent effort to exert more pressure on NATO and EU countries, there have been rumours of Wagner troops heading towards a narrow sliver of land between Poland and Lithuania in recent weeks.

Poland recently declared it would send some 10,000 troops to its border with Belarus, citing Wagner-related worries, and detained two Russians on suspicion of espionage and spreading disinformation for the Russian mercenary force.

Due to worries about Wagner forces, Lithuania announced on Wednesday that it will temporarily halt operations at two of its six border checkpoints with Belarus. The interior minister cited “emerging threats to national security and possible provocations at the border.”

As a retaliatory measure, Belarus criticised Lithuania for taking a “unconstructive and unfriendly step,” calling its Wagner justification “far-fetched.”

In the interview on Thursday, Lukashenko rejected the idea that the failed Wagner mutiny may have undermined Putin, labelling such accusations as “total nonsense.”

“Putin is now more active, shrewd, and intelligent. Nobody will remove Putin today, Lukashenko added, and our enemies need to know it.

He added that the decision to send Wagner fighters to Belarus had come from him. He remarked, “The rebellion could have been terrible to everyone, thus it was important to accept any terms in order to quiet this mutiny, to put out this fire.

According to the Polish ambassador, Poland is preparing for “growing aggressiveness” from Russia and Belarus.

On Thursday, Lukashenko added his voice to the discussion of the ongoing conflict by announcing that Moscow would never relinquish the Crimean peninsula that it had illegitimately taken from Ukraine over seven years earlier.

Russia will “never ever return Crimea,” he declared, according to Belta, even though it is willing to negotiate with Ukraine.

“It won’t take place. I don’t think we can come to an agreement here in the east right now. But Russia is open to talking on any subject. I am positive of it,” Lukashenko remarked.

However, he asserted that Ukrainians “are pushed by Americans” and do not currently want to discuss, adding that negotiations “have to start without preliminary conditions.” Belarus should be a part of any peace negotiations over Ukraine because “we have our interests there, and our position should be heard,” he continued.

In 2014, shortly after Ukrainian protesters assisted in the overthrow of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych, Russia forcibly annexed Crimea when tens of thousands of its special operations forces deployed throughout the peninsula in unmarked uniforms.

Following a referendum that was denounced as invalid by Ukraine and the majority of the world, Russia finished annexing Crimea two weeks later. At the time, this was seen to be the largest land grab in Europe since World War II.

Human rights watchdogs have noted Crimea’s transformation into a police state after annexation, with local officials and Russian security forces arresting and prosecuting those believed to be loyal to Ukraine, notably members of the Crimean Tatar population.

A 2020 US State Department study detailed a pattern of illegal or arbitrarily carried out killings and forced disappearances in Crimea by Russian or Russian-led authorities.

Since then, the occupied region has played a significant role in the conflict in Ukraine. The Crimean bridge, which connects the peninsula to the Russian mainland, serves as a crucial supply route for Russian forces and a target for the Ukrainian operation.

Belarus, a former Soviet satellite that proclaimed its independence in 1990, is an autocratic nation that Lukashenko has essentially ruled since the country’s declaration of independence.

  • Sammy Gyamfi clarifies ‘NDC would tax bet winnings’ comment

Sammy Gyamfi clarifies ‘NDC would tax bet winnings’ comment

National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress, Sammy Gyamfi, has denied claims that he indicated before the 2020 general elections that a future NDC government would impose taxes on profits from sports betting.

He explained that his statement had been misinterpreted by members of the ruling New Patriotic Party to support the imposition of the controversial 10% tax on betting and lottery winnings introduced by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration.

In a statement sighted by GhanaWeb, the NDC communications officer explained that he only suggested that the NDC would consider implementing a tax system on sports betting similar to that of the United Kingdom (UK).

“In response to a question on how the NDC intends to fund the Sports Development Fund we promised in our 2020 manifesto, I indicated in the said interview, that that the NDC will consider imposing a tax on sports betting ‘as it’s done in the UK’.

“The question every objective mind ought to ask, therefore, is what pertains in the UK relative to taxation on sports betting? The answer is simple! In the UK, bet winnings are not taxed. Rather, bet companies are heavily taxed. See https://www.newbettingsites.co/articles/how-much-tax-do-betting-companies-pay/,” parts of the statement reads.

He added that the tax on sports betting in the UK is way different from the 10% tax the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government has placed on bet winnings.

“This is the example I cited and indicated that a future NDC government will consider post 2020. The new 10% tax on bet winnings that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government has introduced is the direct opposite of what pertains in the UK and the position I canvassed in 2020. Don’t be misled!” he said.

The NDC communications officer reiterated that his party is totally opposed to the 10% tax on bet earnings introduced by the current government.

    Read the full statement below:

My attention has been drawn to desperate attempts by some NPP social media activists to put a spin on a comment I made about sports betting in the run up to the 2020 elections.

In response to a question on how the NDC intends to fund the Sports Development Fund we promised in our 2020 manifesto, I indicated in the said interview, that that the NDC will consider imposing a tax on sports betting “as it’s done in the UK”.

The question every objective mind ought to ask therefore, is what pertains in the UK relative to taxation on sports betting?

    The answer is simple!
In the UK, bet winnings are not taxed. Rather, bet companies are heavily taxed. See https://www.newbettingsites.co/articles/how-much-tax-do-betting-companies-pay/

This is the example I cited and indicated that a future NDC government will consider post 2020. The new 10% tax on bet winnings that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government has introduced is the direct opposite of what pertains in the UK and the position I canvassed in 2020. Don’t be misled!

    For the sake of clarity and emphasis, the NDC is vehemently opposed to the 10% tax that has been imposed by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government on bet winnings;

    1. Sports betting although undesirable, has become a necessary evil given the state of hopelessness, joblessness and excruciating hardships that Ghanaian youths have been plunged into by the insensitive and reckless Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government.

    2. Taxing bet winnings under the current excruciating economic conditions Ghanaians are facing, particularly, the high rate of inflation of 43.1% and the highest unemployment rate among others, is insensitive and totally unacceptable.

    3. Government should be innovative in its bid to increase tax revenue and stop this lazy approach to taxation. If government is minded to raise tax revenue from betting, its focus should be on taxing multinational/foreign bet companies as it pertains in the UK and other jurisdictions and not poor Ghanaian youths who have been compelled by the harsh economic conditions in the country to seek refuge in sports betting for their very survival.

    4. More importantly, the new 10% tax on bet winnings introduced by the NPP contravenes the government’s social contract with Ghanaians. That social contract is to the effect that; “taxation is a lazy approach to governance” and that an NPP government will “reduce the tax burden on Ghanaians” and move the country from “taxation to production”.

Contrary to this promise, the current NPP government has introduced over 25 tax handles since they took office in 2017- a clear betrayal of the trust of Ghanaians. These taxes have conspired to make life unbearable for the vast majority of Ghanaians, particularly the youths who can’t find jobs.

The NDC will not and cannot lend its support to the double-standards the NPP continuous to display relative to taxation, particularly at this time of unprecedented hardships.

    5. Undoubtedly, Sports Betting has become a refuge for the millions of Ghanaian unemployed youths who have been compelled by the economic mismanagement of the NPP to depend on betting for survival. Imposing a 10% tax on bet winnings is therefore cruel. Given the difficult times we find ourselves in, the NDC fully supports calls for the immediate scrapping of the newly introduced 10% tax on bet winnings.

This is the official position of the great NDC on the newly-introduced 10% tax on bet winnings.

  • Cecilia Dapaah’s stolen cash controversy will impact NPP – Ken Agyapong

Cecilia Dapaah’s stolen cash controversy will impact NPP – Ken Agyapong

NPP flagbearer hopeful and Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has expressed his opinions regarding the purported misappropriation of funds valued at US$1 million, €300,000, and 350,000 Ghana cedis from the former residence of Cecilia Abena Dapaah, the ex-Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources.

During an interview on TV3 on August 16, 2023, Agyapong highlighted that the money allegedly stolen from the minister could have significant political consequences for the party’s image.

He compared the situation to that of a former Deputy Minister of Communications Victoria Hammah, who according to him was chastised by the public for mentioning her ambition to earn one million dollars.

Agyapong stated that he, personally, was not in a position to advise colleagues who believe that with his blunt nature, he will give them unpalatable advice.

He added “You see, whether we like it or not it is going to affect NPP, I will speak the truth, I’m firm when Victoria Hammah mentioned that if she makes one million dollars, she is going to do ABCD.

“Look at how Ghanaians chastised her, so, the one who just said if I get and the one who has it, so it is a big problem, we cannot run away from it.

“We cannot, I am telling you, that is the truth, whoever is watching or listening …I know there will be backslash but God knows I have spoken the truth,” he added.

Cecilia Dapaah has since July 22 resigned her ministerial position and has been arrested and released on bail by the Special Prosecutor after a search was conducted at her residence.

The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyabeng, and his team further initiated a corruption and corruption-related investigation against Madam Cecilia Dapaah following the alleged theft case.

Further searches at her residence particularly at Abelemkpe discovered additional physical $590, 000 and over GHc2.73 million.

Following from that, the OSP has taken steps by freezing certain bank and investment accounts of the former Minister and is seeking a confirmation order from the High Court in Accra, however, Lawyers of the embattled minister have told the High Court that monies found in the Abelemkpe residence of their client do not mean, she owned them.

In what they described as an “arbitrary exercise of powers,” of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) “based on nothing more than suspicion fuels by misrepresentation of facts and resultant media frenzy,” Madam Cecilia Dapaah’s lawyers said, the application from the OSP should be dismissed.

On the other hand, The OSP has reportedly arrested the husband of Cecilia Dapaah, Daniel Osei Kuffour, in the ongoing investigations.

According to a news report by citinewsroom.com, the arrest of Daniel Osei Kuffour was disclosed during the court hearing on Thursday, August 17, 2023, on the confirmation of the freeze order of Cecilia Dapaah’s bank account and the $590,000 and GHC 2,730,000 found at her house in Abelemkpe.

Dr. Isidore Tuffour, who represented the OSP, told the court that Daapah’s husband had been placed under arrest after the judge presiding over the case asked why she is the only person being investigated.

The lawyer for Cecilia Dapaah, however, indicated that they are not aware of the arrest of their client’s husband.

Commission warns of prosecution for violating wildlife hunting ban

The Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission has imposed a four-month prohibition on hunting, capturing, and eliminating wild animals within the nation’s forests.

As per the Wildlife Conservation Regulation, 1971 (L.I. 685), the annual ban on hunting all wild species, excluding the grasscutter which requires a license, will be effective from 1st August to 1st December this year.

Speaking to our reporter Kwabena Manu, the Protected Area Manager of Digya National Park Atebubu Amantin Game and Wildlife Manager Mr Eric Attah Kusi stated that the purpose is to provide relief for wild animals such as dikers, royal antelopes, and boars (bush pigs), which supply the majority of game (bush meat), as it is breeding season.

He stated that “it is imperative that the animals are given respite from hunting to wean their young for a successful recruitment into the next generation.”

Eric Atta Kusi urged the public not to buy game, dead or alive, except for grasscutter, so that hunters would find it unprofitable to hunt the animals.

He stated that study had revealed that the “close season” for grasscutter might result in large numbers, potentially affecting agricultural production, hence the need for the permit to allow for controlled hunting during the season.

He warned that violators of the ban will face prosecution.

  • We need all the necessary information about your new headquarters in 7 days – Minority to BoG

We need all the necessary information about your new headquarters in 7 days – Minority to BoG

The Minority caucus within Parliament has issued a demand to the Bank of Ghana (BoG), stipulating a seven-day timeframe for the provision of details concerning the expenses related to its forthcoming headquarters in Accra, as outlined in accordance with section 18 of the Right To Information Act (ACT 989).

The caucus is requesting various information from the bank, including details about the land procurement process for the new headquarters building, as well as the names of consultants and project managers.

This request was communicated through a press statement issued by Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, who is also a private legal practitioner.

“My name is Mahama Ayariga Esq, and I am the representative of Bawku Central constituency in Parliament on the ticket of the NDC. Kindly provide information within 7 working days from the date of this letter.

“Could you also provide clarification on the acquisition of the land on which the ongoing construction of the Bank of Ghana’s new headquarters at Ridge in Accra is situated? Specifically, we request information on the procurement process, the associated costs, the arrangement particulars, and the parties involved,” he added.

In response to the scrutiny, the central bank released a statement on August 9, explaining that a structural assessment had deemed the current Bank of Ghana (BoG) Head Office building, constructed in the 1960s, inadequate for its purpose.

It further disclosed that the building could not withstand significant seismic activity or strong winds, and that the decision to construct a new headquarters aimed to support operational efficiency and establish a potential future regional Central Bank headquarters.

The controversy was sparked when the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, revealed that the BoG was allocating $250 million for a new headquarters while facing financial challenges.

Dr. Forson accused the Governor of printing money to fund the project, claiming that the Bank was financially strained.

He demanded the Governor and his deputies’ resignation within 21 days, stating that their actions set a concerning precedent.

Dr. Forson stressed that their call for resignation was driven by concerns over accountability and transparency.

“The Bank of Ghana does not have money but spending $250million for a new head office, which means he is printing additional money to finance this project,” Dr Forson said.

“We have to get this Governor out and let us have a new Governor. If we allow him to stay in the office, we will set bad precedent for future managers to do the same,”

“We demand the immediate resignation of the Governor and his deputies within 21 days. We will march to occupy the central bank to save the Bank of Ghana if he fails to reign. The March will ensure accountability. He has messed us up so much that we cannot wait to see his back,”  he said.

Woman sustains severe injuries after being drenched in boiling water laced with pepper

A 35-year-old woman sustained injuries when another individual poured a mixture of hot water and pepper on her.

Maa Abena, the alleged perpetrator, is said to have accidentally spilled scalding water on the victim following a disagreement.

According to Abena, the victim gossiped about her.

Details are emerging that show the two are close pals.

The suspect allegedly went home, set fire to water, mixed it with pepper, and drenched the victim with it.

Cecilia was brought to the hospital, but she was subsequently released due to her inability to raise the necessary finances for her care.

The incident was later reported to Kwabenya Police Station.

She was arrested and subsequently granted bail.

The husband of the victim, Mr. Isaac Emil, corroborated the story, expressing surprise.

According to him, the two were separated, but the suspect returned home and threw boiling water on the wife.

He stated that the suspect complained to him about his wife, stating that she had gossiped about her, although she neglected to disclose the major issue.

“When the incident occurred, we separated them and thought the problem was resolved, only for the suspect to return home and bring the hot water and pour it on my wife.” I’m surprised because they’re the greatest of friends.”

Lead advocacy to maximize Ghana’s oil production prospects – Deputy Finance Minister to PIAC

Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. John Kumah, has encouraged the Public Interest Accountability Committee (PIAC) to take a leading role in advocating for the reevaluation of current petroleum contracts.

The goal is to ensure that Ghana maximizes its gains from its oil production.

Dr Kumah made the call at the unveiling ceremony of a new PIAC logo, a redesigned website, and a data dashboard on Wednesday, August 16, 2023.

He noted that although the government is eager to enhance its share in the extractive industry, certain “interests and constraints” hinder the ease of modifying the agreement terms.

“Some people have questioned why our interest in the extractive industries is limited to 10 per cent or 20 per cent of the resources and not 55 per cent or 60 per cent.

“When such issues are pushed vehemently and raised by PIAC, I believe as a nation we can see changes in the terms. It is not easy based on the contract we have signed but everything is possible once there is a will” he said.

Mr. Kumah expressed that the Government views the endeavors of PIAC as supplementary to the country’s progress in effectively using and overseeing oil revenue for development purposes.

“I do not think that government sees your contribution as a tango between what government does and what you say. In the end, the objective is for the nation to do better with our oil resources. Every criticism we make should be aimed at making the system better,” he said.

  • Pep Guardiola unsure if Cole Palmer would be traded this summer

Pep Guardiola unsure if Cole Palmer would be traded this summer

With interest in the young forward building quickly, Pep Guardiola is unsure if Cole Palmer will remain at Manchester City or depart.

The manager’s remarks followed Palmer’s player of the match performance in City’s UEFA Super Cup victory over Sevilla on Wednesday night.

The 21-year-old took the pitch in Athens and scored to tie the score at 1-1 and force a penalty shootout, which they won 5-4.

He scored an incredible goal in the Community Shield loss to Arsenal earlier this month after coming off the bench.

Despite his recent bravery, the academy graduate is expected to leave the Etihad this summer, with Brighton and West Ham both showing interest in his talents.

The England U21 star may possibly be used by the Irons as part of a deal that would send Lucas Paqueta in the other direction, while it was reported that the Seagulls are considering a loan move for Palmer.

The sale of Riyad Mahrez, which Guardiola hinted at last week, gave him a spot in the team. Now that Kevin De Bruyne may be out for up to four months, he’ll probably have even more opportunities to play.

Guardiola is still speculating that the forward might yet depart, though he would be leaving permanently if he did.

‘I don’t know [whether he will stay],’ he declared. I thought he wanted to go when we got there, but I’m not sure now.

I don’t believe a loan will be granted. Either he will remain or he will be sold.

He displayed character; playing defenders like [Marcos] Acuna as a young player in these levels is difficult. He did well both on the pitch and with the goal.

In response to claims that he is currently playing his greatest football of his career thus far, Palmer, who also scored the game-winning goal in the Under-21 Euros final this past summer, told TNT Sports: “Not yet, it’s early in the season.”

It’s one of the opening matches of the year. I have to kick on from here.’

  • EPA calls for creation of more biological waste companies

EPA calls for creation of more biological waste companies

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has called for more companies to venture into biological waste management in the country.

Mr Herbert Edem Kpodo, Principal Programme Officer, EPA, Tema, said the agency has taken steps to ensure that waste segregation is paramount in health facilities; however, the unavailability of companies to manage biological waste is limiting their efforts.

“We need a lot of companies to venture into biological waste management; we have a lot of them in general waste; if we have a lot of them also in biological waste management, they should be able to pick up the waste in its segregated forms and send it to where they’ll dispose of it finally,” he stated.

He told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that biological wastes were very dangerous to human health and were highly inappropriate for any kind of waste management company to manage, hence the need for qualified personnel to handle them.

He mentioned that the high cost of managing biological waste had been a contributing factor to companies not going into biological waste management and, if not addressed with immediate effect, would have a negative impact on the overall health of citizens.

Mr Kpodo suggested that there should be government policies with some form of incentive to encourage companies to venture into waste management, adding that this move, when addressed well, could raise a lot of funds for the country.

The EPA Tema Principal Programme Officer urged Ghanaians to question facilities for not segregating the waste appropriately, and where the facility is recalcitrant to adhere to the rules, they should not hesitate to report to the agency for the necessary actions to take place.

ICA-Ghana Fellow drags Audit Service to PAC over unexplained transfer of GH¢52.5bn funds

A Ghanaian citizen and a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accounts, Ghana (ICA-Ghana), Mike Kofi Afflu, is demanding answers regarding the transfer of some GH¢52.5 billion by the audit service to an unknown account.

In a petition to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Chair, James Klutse Avedzi, he said the Auditor – General in a letter dated October 5, 2020 to the Managing Director of GCB Bank Plc., the Auditor – General, demanded the Bank to explain why an amount of GH¢52.5 billion was transferred from the Bank into an Unknown Account.

“Since then, the Auditor-General has not provided any explanation to the Ghanaian,” he said. He, thus, has called on PAC to ensure that the funds are accounted for.

Justifying his call for accountability, Mr Afflu who is also the Former President for the Chartered Institute of Taxation Ghana, noted that: “Mr. Chairman, the USD GHS average rate for October 2020 was 5.77522. The amount of Gh(52.5 million was therefore equivalent to US$9,090,783 (i.e. $9.1 billion).

“Mr Chairman, if this Gh¢52.5 billion (from GRA Account) had been transferred to the Bank of Ghana as mandated by Law, Ghana would not have gone to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the bailout of $3 billion,” he added.

“I am therefore requesting the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament of which you are the Chairman, to invite the Auditor-General of Ghana to provide the necessary explanation to your committee and Ghanaians as a whole. We want to know who withdrew that amount of money from the GCB Bank Plc and for what. I am confident that your Committee will do a thorough job on this Petition please,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Audit-Service and the Public Accounts Committee are yet to respond to the allegation.

  • Security Analyst labels ECOWAS as a failure

Security Analyst labels ECOWAS as a failure

Executive Director of the Africa Center for Security and Counterterrorism, Emmanuel Kotin, has voiced his apprehensions regarding ECOWAS‘ inability to achieve its intended objectives.

Mr Kotin made these comments during an interview on the “Epa Hoa Daben” talk show on Happy 98.9 FM. His remarks coincide with the current political circumstances in Niger, marked by the military junta assuming power.

He recounted significant situations as he drew attention to the issue of electricity supply and its impact on regional relationships.

He pointed out a striking example involving Nigeria and Niger, where the decision to cut the electricity supply from Nigeria to Niger has raised questions about the effectiveness of ECOWAS in fostering cooperation.

“Electricity supply to Nigeria is what destroyed river Niger. There was a pre-agreement for Niger not to put up its dam because it will prevent the waters from flowing to Nigeria. Then why would Nigeria cut electricity to Niger. They have no moral right to do that and they’ve broken a part of Niger,” he said.

“So if today the Niger military leaders are able to hold on to gov’t and they have decided to build their own dam then Nigeria will be in darkness and is that going to help us as a sub region,” he quizzed.

The security expert also highlighted a similar scenario between Ghana and Burkina Faso, where disagreements over electricity tariffs led Burkina Faso to construct its own dam. The consequences of this decision, as he noted, have negatively impacted the North-Eastern region of Ghana, causing damage to agricultural lands whenever the dam is opened.

He further argued that interfering with the Niger junta void of diplomatic alternatives while having neglected these instances of unilateral decision-making by member states undermines the foundational principles of ECOWAS.

The sub-regional organization was established to promote cooperation, stability, and shared development among West African nations. Mr. Kotin expressed concern that such actions could lead to a breakdown of trust and hinder progress in the region.

Forestry Commission staff reportedly shot in the head, back by illegal miners

Unidentified illegal miners have shot a member of the Rapid Response Unit (RRU) of the Forestry Commission (FC), John Baba Konlan in the head and back in the Cape 3 Points Forest Reserve in the Western Region.

According to information from the Forest Services Division’s Takoradi Forest District Office, there were some illegal miners working in the Reserve at a location close to the Morrison Community.

Nine staff members, including members of the Rapid Response Unit and Forest Guards, were quickly sent to the location to verify the accuracy of the information.

After arriving in the Reserve, three members were left in the operation vehicle while the other six continued their hour-long walk through the forest to the illegal mining site.

Narrating their ordeal, the team members saw a dugout pit with illegal miners working diligently at “dig and wash” from a distance.

The team members decided to take different paths in order to be able to surround and capture the illegal miners.

According to a team member, a few minutes after they had arrived at the pit via their individual routes, he heard gunshots and immediately became alert, scanning the area for any indication of danger.

As he moved forward, he noticed the illegal miners leaving their working tools behind and running into the forest.

After a short while, he said, he heard one of his team members screaming and pleading with the others to help Mr Konlan, who had been shot.

As a result, the team cancelled the entire exercise, carried Mr. Konlan back to where their car was parked for more than an hour through the forest while he was throwing up blood.

They transported him to the Western Region’s Effia Nkwanta Government Hospital. He was sent to the Cape Coast Regional Medical Centre for additional care.

A CT Scan carried out on Mr Konlan indicated, there are other bullets that did not enter the brain or fracture any bone; 2 are left in the left frontal scalp, one in the left parietal at the vertex, multiple lodged close to the angle of the left mandible, and one in the soft tissue of the right neck”.

Since the case was brought to the Takoradi Central Police Station’s attention, no arrests have been made.

The Rapid Response Team’s employees have recently come under severe attack from illegal loggers.

This is the second incident to occur in the past six weeks; the first was the abduction of Mr. Vitus Yourdong in the Asukese Forest Reserve in the Bono Region.

He was a member of a Rapid Response Team sent into the Reserve to apprehend unauthorised chainsaw users.

He was kidnapped, held captive for more than two weeks, and then dumped at a landfill in the Eastern Region at Nkwakaw- Asona.

Forest guard reportedly shot by illegal miners

A member of the Rapid Response Unit (RRU) under the Forestry Commission (FC), John Baba Konlan, has allegedly been shot in both the head and back.

Unidentified illegal miners purportedly struck him within the Cape 3 Points Forest Reserve in the Western Region.

According to the Takoradi Forest District Office of the Forest Services Division, several illegal miners were operating in the Reserve near the Morrison Community.

A team of nine personnel, consisting of Rapid Response Unit personnel and Forest Guards, was swiftly dispatched to the spot to determine the authenticity or otherwise of the report.

When they arrived at the Reserve, three members were left in the operation vehicle, while the remainder hiked for over an hour through the forest to the illicit mining location.

The team members noticed a dugout pit with illegal miners busy doing “dig and wash” from a distance.

The team members agreed to use separate routes to encircle and arrest the illegal miners.

According to one of the team members, he heard gunshots a few minutes after they had taken their own routes to the pit and so became vigilant, looking for signals of danger.

He proceeded forward a little and spotted the illegal miners fleeing into the forest, leaving their tools behind.

He stated that a few minutes later, he heard one of his team members screaming and calling out to the rest of the team members to rush to the help of Mr. John Baba Konlan, who had been shot.

They took him to the Effia Nkwanta Government Hospital in the Western Region.

He was referred to the Cape Coast Regional Hospital for additional treatment.

He was then referred to the University of Ghana Medical Centre in Accra, where he was hospitalised.

He has since been dismissed and told to return in two weeks for a review.

  • Ban sports betting –  Ato Forson to government

Ban sports betting –  Ato Forson to government

Ranking Member on Parliament’s Committee on Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has called on the government to ban sports betting rather than impose taxes on the sector.

According to him, betting is destroying Ghanaian youth and should be banned instead of taxed.

“Ghana today, we are complaining that this gambling is destroying our youth. I have read a number of articles on this. I would have thought the government would come out with a policy to restrict gambling and to even ban it,” he said.

In a media interaction, the former deputy finance minister said the government should not put too much emphasis on revenue mobilisation at the expense of the people.

Dr Ato Forson indicated that, “to run a country is not all about money. You need to preserve society as well.”

Government in its 2021 Budget presented to Parliament estimated an annual revenue loss of over GHS 300 million due to leakages in the betting industry.

The task of co-supervising the gaming industry and consulting with stakeholders to develop an all-encompassing policy to enhance revenue mobilisation from this source has been given to the Ministries of Finance and the Interior.

However, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Finance Committee proposes the government leverage the Tax Exemption Bill instead of taxing individuals and businesses.

“Exemption Bill alone can rake in 2.5% of GDP. Instead of government of Ghana going back to push that Exemption Bill; they have decided to tax us because that is easy” the MP for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam said.

Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, the minister of information, rejects the country’s decision to outlaw gaming businesses. According to him, betting is not a prohibited activity under Ghanaian law, but rather that the government may impose higher levels of taxes on the industry, similar to the taxes it levies on goods like tobacco and alcohol.

“Government is saying that it is noticeable that the gambling space is opened up with a lot of online betting platforms. Just like it does with the National Lottery Authority, it will like to ensure that the proper taxes are accrued from there. It will be double standards if you are allowing NLA and banning all of these ones.” Oppong-Nkrumah said.

He is sceptical about the prospect of leveraging the Tax Exemption Bill as a revenue mobilisation mechanism.

He, however, proposed rolling out of the Physical Electronic Devices tax as one of the surest ways for the state to raise revenue.

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) on Monday, August 7, announced that it will begin implementing a 10% withholding tax on all gross gaming winnings from August 15, 2023.

This follows the government’s decision to amend the Tax Act, therefore, introducing withholding tax on winnings from sports betting and lottery.

The betting industry in Ghana has grown significantly over the past ten years, which has led to the influx of  betting companies in the country.

Ghanaians’ opinions on sports betting have recently frequently been divided, with some highlighting its negative effects on the youth.

Others also believe betting is legal and therefore cannot be described as a bad practice when no laws are broken.

However, the decision to impose a 10% withholding tax has drawn criticism from Ghanaians, some of whom have attacked the government on social media.

  • Fulham joins the search for Arsenal striker as Aleksandar Mitrovic gets ready to leave

Fulham joins the search for Arsenal striker as Aleksandar Mitrovic gets ready to leave

Due to the impending departure of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Fulham has emerged as the newest team to be connected with Arsenal forward Folarin Balogun.

The Premier League team Fulham is getting ready to trade Mitrovic to the Saudi club Al-Halal this summer despite the fact that he has 111 goals in 206 games for them.

After Fulham attempted to impose a £52 million price tag on him in order to thwart the move, the 28-year-old Serbian international reportedly declared he would never play for them again.

The Saudi Pro League team Al-Hilal, though, is reportedly close to agreeing to a deal to sign Mitrovic, and it is anticipated that they will shell out more than £40 million to do so.

Given that the new season has already begun, Fulham will urgently seek a replacement for Mitrovic, who has been a goal machine for the club.

According to the Daily Mail, Fulham is now mulling a bid for Arsenal striker Balogun, with the Gunners hoping to fetch £50 million for the 22-year-old.

Last season, Balogun made an impression while on loan at the French club Reims, scoring 21 goals in 37 Ligue 1 games.

Numerous teams have expressed interest in him, most notably Inter Milan, who have been connected to Balogun all summer. However, the Italians are hesitant to spend £50 million on him.

Balogun and Monaco had a “initial agreement” to return to the club, but Arsenal rejected their offer to bring Balogun back to Ligue 1.

Balogun is a player that West Ham and even Arsenal’s rivals in north London, Tottenham, are reportedly interested in signing.

  • Elephantiasis cases soar in Upper East Region

Elephantiasis cases soar in Upper East Region

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has revealed that the Upper East region of Ghana has recorded the highest number of cases of elephantiasis, also known as lymphatic filariasis, in the country.

2,373 confirmed cases of elephantiasis, or about a third of all cases nationwide, have been reported in the area.

Desk officer for the Ghana Health Service’s neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) programme, Bright Alomatu is confident that despite the fact that elephantiasis is endemic in all 15 of the Upper East Region’s municipalities and districts, medical professionals have been able to stop its spread there.

According to Mr. Alomatu, there may be a number of reasons for the high number of cases in the Upper East region, including poor sanitation and hygiene practices that encourage mosquito breeding and the spread of the disease.

Speaking at a stakeholder sensitisation event on adopting and promoting measures to address issues facing disease patients in Bolgatanga, he said, “The risk is very high where we have transmission ongoing because the mosquitoes bite everybody. So once the parasite is in the system and the mosquitoes are picking and spreading, then the likelihood of you getting it is very high.”

According to Mr. Alomatu, health workers and volunteers have also received training across the entire country since 2016, and this has helped to stop the spread of the disease in 109 districts.

Elephantiasis was mapped in 1999, and only regions such as Ashanti, Ahafo, Volta and Oti were found to be non-endemic.” (use such as instead of like, and remove the comma before and

Of the 261 districts in the country, 116 were found to be endemic for the disease.

“We’ve trained 2,100 patients on how to manage their conditions so that they can see an improvement of the condition of the leg or whichever part is swollen, so that it will not swell further and they will not also suffer from acute inflammation,” he added.

The Ghana Health Service, American Leprosy Mission, and the Christian Blind Mission are collaborating to provide care and support for people living with elephantiasis in the Upper East region.

The purpose of the sensitization, according to Programme Manager for American Leprosy Mission, Mr Solomon Atinbire, was to empower some people to act as game changers and push for the inclusion of patients with elephantiasis cases in Ghana’s Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme.

“That would help them [patients] to get some money to register for health insurance coverage so that anytime they are taken ill, they can visit the health facilities for care”, he stated.

According to Mr. Atinbire, the decision to establish a committee in each district and municipality of the region to fight for the welfare of the patients with elephantiasis was made, because the condition of elephantiasis made patients vulnerable to participating in any economic activities or accessing healthcare services.

The Upper East Regional Deputy Health Director in Charge of Public Health, Dr. Josephat Nyuzaghl, adding his voice, stated that it is expected that the advocacy organisations will involve the assemblies in order for the patients to receive some of the disability funds of the assemblies.

Elephantiasis is a parasitic infection caused by thread-like worms transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes.

The infection can lead to swelling and thickening of the limbs and genitals, resulting in significant disfigurement and disability. It can also cause severe pain and discomfort, as well as secondary infections.

It affects body parts such as the legs, hands, breasts of women, penis, vulva, and scrotum, with the hands, legs, and scrotum being the most common in Ghana.

  • FDA threatens prosecution against persons adulterating food products

FDA threatens prosecution against persons adulterating food products

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a warning to individuals involved in the food industry, especially market vendors and food sellers, to stop the ongoing practice of altering food and ingredients, or else they will be subject to legal action.

The regulatory body noted that the act of adding chemicals and other substances to food to deceive buyers and increase profits has become widespread in certain markets within the nation.

Madam Nora Narki Tei-Larbi, the Director of Regional Operations, FDA, said the unwholesome practice undermined food safety and resulted in dire health implications such as cancer and, sometimes, death.

“People have been arrested and prosecuted for various infractions and we are still prosecuting. There are some that we have in court now and so we need to put a stop to it,” she said.

Madam Tei-Larbi was addressing market women at Kasoa during an education and sensitisation exercise to mark the Central Region’s World Food Safety Day.

Held on the theme: “Food Standards, Save Lives,” the event created a platform for exciting dialogue among the market women, the FDA, representatives of the local governments and other stakeholders, on the best ways to ensure food safety.

Sharing their experiences and concerns, the market women opened-up on the use of Sudan IV dye in palm oil, mixing groundnut paste with ‘Kokonte’, adulterating corn dough with yeast and using “tie-and-dye” colour to process beef.

Others also had issues with the excessive use of fertilizer and other chemicals to increase yield or expedite the ripening of fruits and vegetables, which caused them to perish quickly.

For others, they were concerned about drug peddling and the sales of aphrodisiacs in the market.

Madam Tei-Larbi noted that lacing palm oil with Sudan IV dye had been a long-time practice that became rife in 2022, largely due to the high demand for red oil.

“Our oil is not red anymore because our local palm is on the verge of extinction. What we have is the Agric palm and that does not give red palm oil,” she said.

“We are asking everybody in the value chain to stop the adulteration because the Sudan IV dye causes cancer and must not be eaten.”

She urged citizens to be vigilant when buying foodstuffs since it was impossible to identify an adulterated food or ingredient and entreated the market women to police one another and report perpetrators to the FDA for sanctioning.

Madam Francisca Obeng, the Central Regional Head of FDA, reiterating the need for food safety, advised against the use of rotten vegetables such as onions and tomatoes for public foods in a bid to cut cost or avoid losses.

She urged food vendors to acquire Street Food Vending Permits to legitimise their operations.

Madam Anita Obo Amissah, the Municipal Chief Executive of Awutu-Senya-East, who shared her experience of an adulterated groundnut paste, appealed to the market women to stop the act.

She implored them not to sell expired products to the public, while entreating the public to be wary of the same.

“Let us stop poisoning our food because our health is important. If you do not have good health, you may use all your money to heal yourself,” she said.

She urged the FDA to frequently educate the public on food safety to ensure adherence.

Nana Barfi Okoto, the Otumfuo Brempon, Adontenhen of Adomfe, deplored the level of filth and the general unhygienic environment at the Kasoa New Market.

He said people had thrown hygiene to the wind and were selling by heaps of refuse in and around the market while most of them urinated at inappropriate places.

“Hygiene is necessary when it comes to food because poor sanitation causes food poisoning, sickness, and death,” he said.

“When Covid-19 came, we were all washing our hands regularly but now we do not do that any longer. We need to return to that practice.”

He urged the Assembly to build a public toilet for the market to ensure personal hygiene.

“Let us have the fear of God in us and desist from selling poisoned foods to the public.”

EC to begin voter’s registration exercise on September 12

The Electoral Commission has announced that it will commence the 2023 voter’s registration exercise on Tuesday, September 12, and end on Monday, October 2.

The exercise will be conducted, according to the Commission, at its district offices across the country.

At a press conference titled “Let the Citizen Know” on Thursday, August 17, in Accra, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, announced this.

However, she announced a GH¢10 charge for replacement of lost or misplaced voter’s ID card.

“The voter’s registration exercise will afford Ghanaians who have attained the age of 18 years, since the last registration of 2020 and others who are more than 18 years, but for various reasons couldn’t register during the 2020 registration exercise.”

“The EC will embark on voter’s registration in all 268 district offices of the Commission. The exercise will be held from September 12 to October 2,”she disclosed.

The District Level Assembly Elections will be held on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, according to Jean Mensa.

She stated that the elections would be held in all districts, with the exception of Nkoranza North and South in the Bono region, in all 6,272 electoral areas.

According to Jean Mensa, elections will not be held in both districts until 2025.

  • Reece James, captain of Chelsea, set back by another injury

Reece James, captain of Chelsea, set back by another injury

Chelsea is awaiting the scan results on club captain Reece James, who recently sustained a hamstring injury.

Following Cesar Azpilicueta’s departure from the team in the summer, the England international was named the team’s new captain earlier this month.

Last Sunday’s 1-1 tie with Liverpool saw James take the armband off due to “tiredness,” according to manager Mauricio Pochettino, but he later put it back on.

Sky Italy reports that additional tests have identified a hamstring strain, and Chelsea must now wait in suspense to learn the full degree of the harm.

The 23-year-old was limited to 24 games last season and did not participate in the World Cup because of a knee injury he suffered during a Champions League victory against Milan almost a year ago.

Malo Gusto stepped in for James during the final minutes of the match against Liverpool, and Pochettino expects the summer purchase from Lyon to fill in against West Ham on Sunday as he looks to earn his first competitive victory.

Meanwhile, Chelsea has grudgingly agreed to sell Lewis Hall after Newcastle made a £28 million offer.

The kid had an impressive breakthrough last season, and while the Blues had no intention of offloading one of their most promising young players at the beginning of the summer, the offer—even though it came from a Premier League rival—has been deemed too good to refuse.

In addition, Michael Olise’s decision to sign a new four-year contract with Crystal Palace has derailed Pochettino’s efforts to sign him from the Eagles.

Chelsea expected to close a deal fast and this week activated the 21-year-old’s £35 million release clause.

However, Palace, incensed by Chelsea’s offer, has persuaded the former Reading star to commit his near future to the team and take the lead in Selhurst Park’s post-Wilfried Zaha era.

  • Muntaka Mubarak endorses 10% tax on sports betting

Muntaka Mubarak endorses 10% tax on sports betting

Asawase Member of Parliament, Mohammed-Muntaka Mubarak, seems to have diverged from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by expressing a differing stance on the 10% withholding tax related to sports betting.

While the party’s youth wing has officially proclaimed their position of vehemently opposing the contentious tax policy, Muntaka Mubarak has embraced it.

As stated by the former Minority Chief Whip, individuals placing bets should not encounter any difficulties when it comes to paying taxes on the winnings they earn from their wagers.

Speaking in an interview on Angel FM, Mubarak Muntaka said, “Betting is haram and taxing is a way to develop the country. Anyone who earns income from working deserves to pay tax, so the question is don’t they get profit from betting?”

He added, “If it was their capital that is being taxed that will be the problem but it is rather the earnings that are being taxed. I get taxed for the income I earn from working, so why don’t they want to pay tax?”

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) announced that persons who engage in sports betting and lottery would have to pay a 10% tax on all earnings starting on August 15.

The policy by government has raised many eyebrows from the youth in Ghana who are heavily involved in sports betting.

George Opare Addo, the National Youth Organizer of the party issued a statement in which the party threatened to embark on a demonstration if the tax is not withdrawn.

Our determination to protect the funds Young People secure through betting is unyielding. Through agitations, protests, advocacy, and civic engagements, we will ensure our voices are heard and demand that this CORRUPT Akufo-Addo/Bawumia Government rescind its decision.”

The statement added “We INTEND to do the following; Picket at the Ministry of Finance and occupy government offices across the country. Start and scale up nationwide conventional and unconventional lawful agitations as a measure of the resistance. Instigate young people to confront officials of this government and demand AN END to the CORRUPTION and Insensitivity of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-failed brigade, and Occupy Parliament and other government agencies.”

  • EC sets December 19 for District Level Elections

EC sets December 19 for District Level Elections

Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled Tuesday, December 19, 2023 as the date for the 2023 District Level Elections (DLE).

Assemblies will have to elect new members for the next four years because the terms of the current Assembly Members, who were elected in 2019, expire in December of this year.

EC Chairwoman Jean Mensa announced at a press conference in Accra on Thursday that new voters will be registered from September 12 to October 2, 2023 at its 268 district offices.

The EC said it had targeted a 60 per cent voter turnout for this year’s DLE and appealed to the media to help create awareness and educate the public on the essence of the exercise.

With the exception of Nkoranza North and Nzoranka South in the Bono East Region, all 6,272 electoral areas would participate in the DLE, according to Mrs Mensa.

“This is because the district-level elections were not held in 2019 for the said districts due to security reasons but was postponed and conducted in April 2021.

“As such, the elections would not be held in both regions until 2025”, the Chairperson explained.

The Commission, according to Mrs Mensa, had created a comprehensive schedule of events for the upcoming DLE, which would be made public in due course.

She urged those who were eligible but not on the electoral roll to sign up during the upcoming registration drive in order to be able to cast a ballot in the elections on December 19.

Mrs. Mensa gave the assurance that there would be additional registration drives before the general election in 2024.

She mentioned that people who had misplaced their voter identification cards could get new ones at any District Registration Centre for GHC10.

“We state categorically that persons, who have lost their ID card do not need to register again. They simply have to request for a replacement of their cards,” Mrs Mensa said.

Mr Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairman of the EC in Charge of Operations, said the Commission would take steps to ensure high voter participation in the DLE.

“There will be stakeholder engagements with the civil society, security agencies, faith based organisations and a massive awareness in the media and public announcements by district electoral officers,” he said.

In the last District Level Elections in 2019, 57,000 candidates contested in the 6,700 electoral areas across the country.

Since the late 1980s, the DLE has recorded low voter turnout. According to the EC, in 1988/89, the National Average Voter Turnout at the DLE was 59.3 percent; in 1994, it was 29.3 percent; 1998, 41.6 percent; 2002, 33.1 percent; 2006, 39.3 percent; 2010, 35.5 percent; 2015, 30.6 percent, and 2019, 33 percent.

Any amount above GHC300 for a passport is illegal; don’t pay – Foreign Ministry warns

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has stated that the most an individual applying for a Ghanaian passport should be charged is GHC300, which applies to a premium service.

The passport office in Accra received an unexpected visit from the sector minister, who primarily declared the discontinuation of contracts for all contracted personnel. This action was taken to cleanse and improve the passport application procedure.

The minister lamented why citizens should be forced to part with in excess of 2,000 in some cases 3,000 cedis to obtain a passport.

The Ministry has now published how much it should cost for an applicant to obtain the travel document.

It’s press release dated August 17, 2023, which gave an email and hotlines to report unsatisfactory service at all Passport Application Centers (PACs) read in part:

The Ministry further wishes to remind the general public that passport applications are made on the passport application portal — passport.mfa.gov.gh and payment for the approved processing fees for the passport is made on the ghana.gov.gh platform based on the following:

    i. 32-page booklet – GH¢100.00
    ii. 48-page booklet – GH¢150.00

The payment is made ELECTRONICALLY and NOT BY CASH.

On the issue of expedited service, the statement continued: “The public is advised to note that applications submitted to the regular PACs does not come an an extra cost.

“However, applicants have the option of submitting their applications to the Premium PACs, which attract an additional GH¢150.000 payable in cash at the Premium Centers for the use of their service.”

From the above, anyone who applies for a 32-page booklet and does so through the Premium Centers will pay a total of 250 cedis whiles a 48-page booklet applicant will pay 300 cedis in total – 150 cedis for the application (electronic payment) and another 150 cedis in cash at the Premium Center.

  • England’s Lionesses defeat Australia to advance to first-ever Women’s World Cup final

England’s Lionesses defeat Australia to advance to first-ever Women’s World Cup final

With goals from Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp, and Alessia Russo on Wednesday, England defeated Australia 3-1 to advance to the Women’s World Cup final for the first time.

The Matildas were the only team to defeat Sarina Wiegman’s team in the previous two years and 37 games, presenting the Lionesses with a formidable challenge at Sydney’s Stadium Australia in front of a boisterous and partisan home crowd.

However, they put on a polished, composed, and clinical performance against their old enemies to advance to the World Cup finals for a third time in a row and will now face Spain on Sunday.

Toone scored first in the 36th minute, but Sam Kerr’s brilliant solo goal midway through the second half cancelled it out. Later, Hemp took advantage of a defensive blunder, and Russo sealed the victory late to guarantee England’s place in the final.

Lauren James served the second game of a two-game suspension, although Wiegman kept the same starting lineup for the match. For the first time throughout the competition, Australia star Kerr was deemed fit to play, but Alanna Kennedy, the centre defender, was unable to do so due to illness.

The Chelsea striker had the opening opportunity of the game. She showed no indications of her calf injury as she raced through England’s thick defensive line, only to be stopped by Mary Earps, even though the flag for offside was raised somewhat tardily.

Moments later, Georgia Stanway was superbly sent free by Alex Greenwood’s pass behind the Australian defence, but her volley effort was too close to keeper Mackenzie Arnold, and England should have grabbed the lead.

A highly defensive Australia was finding it difficult to stop England’s darting runs in behind as Wiegman’s team alternated between long stretches of possession and quick, direct attacks in the opening exchanges. Russo’s flowing play ended with her hitting the side netting for the Lionesses.

The first goal Australia had given up in five hours came just as the Matildas were beginning to enjoy a rare period of their own possession. Russo wriggled her way towards the byline and did well to pull the ball back where Toone was on hand to bury a rising effort into the top corner.

Every irregular Australian attack was greeted with a cheer, and every ill-timed English challenge was whistled, but then the 75,784-person stadium fell silent.

After the restart, Australia displayed more vigour and enthusiasm, but the Lionesses continued to feel in control, and Hemp’s hopeful long-range attempt sent Arnold scurrying over her line. Captain Millie Bright got a free header from the ensuing corner that may have ended the match.

She received punishment for her wastefulness. The Chelsea teammate Bright backed off and off as Kerr, who had been unable to have an impression on the game up to this point, received the ball on the halfway line and drove at him. From 25 yards out, Kerr fired a fierce shot that flew over Earps and nearly into the back of the net.

Many significant athletic events have taken place in this historic stadium throughout the years, including Cathy Freeman’s gold medal performance in the 400 metres at the 2000 Summer Olympics and Jonny Wilkinson’s winning drop goal in the 2003 Rugby World Cup, but few will have elicited the cheers that Kerr’s magnificent solo goal did.

After that setback, though, England came back with a cross from Lucy Bronze that almost caught Arnold off guard before Russo fired a header just wide of the far post. Once again applying pressure, they were successful when right-back Ellie Carpenter fumbled a long ball forward.

Hemp pounced from six yards and nudged the ball past a hapless Arnold as she hesitated. The game’s first two goals were breathtaking finishes, but this one was very scrappy—almost fittingly so, considering the effort and tenacity that went along with England’s more refined play on the way to the final.

But in the end, the Lionesses had to endure some very terrifying moments. Prior to forcing a superb save from Earps, substitute Cortnee Vine headed over the crossbar from close range. Moments later, Kerr blasted by from a corner completely unnoticed.

England continued to threaten on the break and ended the match in the 86th minute rather than holding out through a final siege. She threaded the needle to set up Russo, who rocketed into the bottom corner with a very identical finish to her victory against Colombia in the previous round after Hemp’s fantastic, slaloming run opened up the field.

The Lionesses’ victory prevents Australia from sweeping a series of sporting contests that have lasted all summer and sets up the first-ever Women’s World Cup final. Australian cricket teams for men and women both won back the Ashes, and earlier this month, they triumphed in the Netball World Cup final as well. This is England’s sweet retaliation.

Britney Spears and her husband Sam Asghari divorce after 14 months of marriage

After 14 months of marriage, pop star Sam Asghari and Britney Spears have divorced.

A divorce petition filed late on Wednesday, seen by BBC News, cites “irreconcilable differences” between Asghari, 29, and Spears, 41.

In September 2021, the couple announced their engagement. In June 2022, they tied the knot in a modest but celebrity-studded ceremony.

However, stories about their marital problems have been widely reported in US tabloids this year.

Spears’ and Asghari’s representatives have not yet provided any comments.

In a Wednesday night post to her 42 million Instagram followers, the musician chose to write that she was “buying a horse soon” rather than addressing the divorce.

In his petition for the dissolution of his marriage, Asghari requests that Spears cover his spousal support payments as well as his legal costs.

The Iranian-American actor, model and fitness trainer met Spears while she was shooting the video for her song, Slumber Party, in 2016.

He played a key role during her conservatorship fight with father Jamie, sporting a Free Britney T-shirt on Instagram before a crucial court hearing.

Their wedding, at the superstar’s home in Thousand Oaks, California last year, was an intimate and lavish affair attended by celebrities including Paris Hilton, Madonna and Drew Barrymore.

The two had recently been seen without their wedding rings in public.

The separation comes as Spears prepares to publish her memoir – The Woman in Me – this October.

It marks the end of her third marriage.

Moscow court has accused imprisoned US citizen of espionage

A US citizen who was born in Russia and is presently in detention has reportedly been charged with espionage, according to the press service of a Moscow court, reports the Russian state news agency TASS.

According to TASS, Gene Spector is currently in prison after confessing to the charges of bribery.

Spector was reportedly born and reared in St. Petersburg before moving to the US and getting US citizenship, according to TASS. He presided over the board of the Medpolymerprom Group, which specialised in cancer drugs, according to TASS.

According to TASS, Spector was accused of arranging payments for Anastasia Alekseyeva, an ex-assistant of former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich. According to TASS, Alekseyeva accepted payments worth more than 4 million rubles ($43,000), which included visits to Thailand and the Dominican Republic.

According to a US diplomat at the US embassy in Moscow, they think the US citizen is already imprisoned and that they are unaware of any fresh charges.

There is no evidence the US believes Spector is being imprisoned unlawfully.

The US is “aware of reports of charges against a US citizen in Russia,” according to a representative for the US State Department. They added that they were “monitoring the situation, but have no further comment at this time.”

Following President Vladimir Putin‘s full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year, tensions between the US and Russia increased, making efforts to free two additional US nationals who were held more difficult.

The State Department believes that Paul Whelan, who has been jailed for more than four years, and Wall Street Journal writer Evan Gershkovich, who was detained in March, were illegally detained. To ensure their release, the Biden administration has been working.

According to a source close to CNN, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke on the phone on Wednesday with Whelan, who is being imprisoned in a remote Russian prison camp.

When Whelan called, the top US ambassador reportedly advised him to “keep the faith and we’re doing everything we can to bring you home as soon as possible,” according to the source. According to the source, this is Blinken’s second conversation with Whelan. Another knowledgeable source informed CNN that the second phone chat between Whelan and Blinken took place on December 30.

The serious request that the Biden administration put forth for Whelan’s release more than eight months ago has been repeatedly reiterating to Russia. According to two administration officials who spoke to CNN, Russia has not made a significant response.

The Biden administration has been searching the world for proposals that could persuade Russia to release the two Americans who were illegally jailed, CNN reported earlier this year. According to current and former US officials, the US does not currently have any high-level Russian agents, necessitating the need to ask partners for assistance.

At least 10 people killed in Malaysia as plane crashes onto motorway

A charter plane crashed onto a motorway north of Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, killing at least 10 passengers.

According to a statement from the Malaysian Civil Aviation Authority, the plane, which was carrying six passengers and two crew members, took off from Langkawi International Airport and was travelling to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport.

According to the statement, “the aircraft made its initial contact with the Subang Air Traffic Control Tower at 2.47 p.m. [local time (2.47 a.m. ET)] and landing permission was issued at 2:48pm. The “Control Tower observed smoke originating from the crash site at 2.51 p.m. local time, but no mayday call was made by the aircraft,” the statement continued.

According to Selangor Police Chief Hussein Omar Khan and state daily Berita Harian, the jet struck a motorbike and a car that were both carrying one person each.

According to the state newspaper, Khan stated that the Ministry of Transportation will conduct an investigation. “Forensic personnel are in the process of collecting the remains and will bring them to the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang for a post-mortem examination and identification process,” the newspaper added.

Investigations, according to Anthony Loke, minister of transportation.

He declared at a press conference that “no one survived the crash.” “Victims (on the road) will also need to be identified; an update will be provided when appropriate. A forensic confirmation is required.

Malaysian media captured videos and pictures of the event, showing a burned-out portion of the highway blocked off and smoke billowing in the air.

“I don’t understand, is it a case they do whatever pleases them?” – Dormaahene on BoG’s $250m head office

Dormaahene who doubles as a High Court judge Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, has voiced his concerns over the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) new head office project, estimated to cost $250 million. The Dormaahene criticized the timing and expenditure of such a significant sum on constructing an office complex.

Expressing his displeasure in a news report by Accra-based TV3, he questioned the rationale behind the BoG using approximately one-twelfth of the $12 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout that Ghana is currently accessing to fund an office building. He expressed confusion over the unilateral decision by the Bank of Ghana to undertake such a project, and whether it stemmed from their autonomy as a financial institution.

He further called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to intervene and engage with the Bank of Ghana to reconsider its plans. The Dormaahene emphasized that he expected a productive outcome from the discussions, as he believed that the bank’s autonomy did not make it entirely independent from oversight.

The cost of the new office facility, as estimated by the Parliamentary Minority, has sparked significant public debate. The Bank of Ghana, in response to the concerns raised by the minority, stated that the new office complex was deemed necessary primarily for security reasons, especially in the event of an earthquake. They highlighted the potential vulnerability of the current location.

The Dormaahene’s intervention adds to the ongoing discourse surrounding the project, with various stakeholders voicing their opinions on the cost, necessity, and appropriateness of the proposed new head office for the central bank.

  • “Even cowards find their strength when pushed” – Kofi Bentil to Agyapa deal promoters

Lawyer Kofi Bentil has criticized the current state of affairs in the country, labeling it an “unbridled mess.” He specifically highlighted the renewed positive assessments by pro-government voices regarding the previously terminated Agyapa deal.

The Agyapa deal has regained attention due to a recent regional court judgment suggesting that the government had the right to pursue the transaction. Prominent figures like Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, who was associated with the deal as a transaction advisor, have argued that the legitimate deal was hindered on weak grounds.

Gabby and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s lawyer, Kow Essuman, have criticized Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) for their perceived silence following the court’s ruling.

Bentil, however, had a direct message for those individuals. He expressed his thoughts on Facebook (August 16, 2023), stating, “in the midst of this unbridled mess, some people want to revive their obscene Agyapa. SMH… even cowards find their strength when pushed too far! we are not cowards, Keep pushing…”

The Agyapa Royalties deal, proposed in 2020 by the Ghanaian government, aimed to raise funds by offering shares of Agyapa Royalties Limited on the London Stock Exchange. Critics, including civil society groups and the opposition, condemned it as a secretive and corrupt venture that would benefit politicians at the country’s expense.

It later emerged that Gabby’s firm had served as transaction advisors in the deal. Veteran journalist Kweku Baako clarified the extent of Gabby’s involvement, stating that Gabby’s firm received around US$103,000, contrary to claims of much higher sums.

Amid the controversy, questions arose about the roles played by Osafo-Maafo’s son and Gabby Otchere-Darko in the Agyapa deal. The deal’s revival and associated discussions have prompted divergent opinions and raised concerns about transparency and accountability in government transactions.

  • The moment ‘Game of Thrones’ tune plays as guest anthem to receive ECOWAS military officers in Accra

The moment ‘Game of Thrones’ tune plays as guest anthem to receive ECOWAS military officers in Accra

It’s a Lannister?, no it’s a Stark, no it’s Targaryen maybe a dragon, no it’s the ECOWAS senior military officers in Accra.

Echoes of the legendary theme song for the popular fantasy television series ‘Game of Thrones’ reverberated in Accra on August 17, 2023, as the ECOWAS senior military officers converged in Accra for a meeting.

It was not a meeting to strategise for the ‘Battle of Winterfell,’ rather, it was an assembly aimed at devising strategies for the sub region to exert pressure on Niger to restore power to the democratically elected President. However, the theme music of HBO’s fantasy television series Game of Thrones was prominently featured when the ECOWAS military chiefs met.

Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum was detained in Niamey on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, by the presidential guard after “talks” which failed and the army issued “an ultimatum” to the guard, AFP learned from a source close to the presidency.

The junta has faced international pressure to release and reinstate Bazoum. Immediately after the coup, the West African regional bloc ECOWAS gave the regime seven days to return him to power and threatened to use military force if that did not happen. The deadline came and went with no action from either side.

ECOWAS later condemned the junta’s treason charges against Bazoum, calling them provocative and contradictory to reported willingness to peacefully restore constitutional order.

The regional bloc has threatened to impose sanctions on the military government in Niger and to “use military force in Niger if necessary” if power was not returned to the democratically elected government.

It is against this background that the meeting was held in Accra on August 17 and will continue on August 18.

  •  Paul Adom-Otchere ‘fights’ Dr Nii Moi Thompson; says JB Danquah is founder of UGCC

Metro TV broadcast journalist Paul Adom is fighting off renowned economist and historian about J.B. Danquah’s role in Ghana’s political history.

The Good Evening Ghana show host insists that J.B. remains the doyen of Ghana’s politics and the founder of Ghana’s first political party the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC).

Paul argued that, J.B Danquah hatched the idea of forming the UGCC and convinced Paa Grant, who was considered the richest Gold Coaster at the time to fund the formation process and join.

His argument is in sharp contrast with Dr Nii Moi Thompson statement which recognized Paa Grant, one of The Big Six as the true founder of Ghana’s first party.

Dr Nii Moi Thompson  shot down attempts by some members of the ruling government including President Akufo-Addo himself to distort Ghana’s history by apportioning undue credit to the Akyems members of the United Gold Coast Convention.

Dr Nii Moi Thompson in an extensive in an article titled: ‘Beware, the tribal supremacists: Myths of J.B. Danquah and the Big Six’, wherein he criticized President Akufo-Addo’s recent hint at renaming the University of Ghana after his late uncle who, the president said would “not be far-fetched” to describe as the “founder” of Ghana’s premier institution of higher learning, Dr Thompson said: “Danquah … had a weird obsession for naming places, like the president does today”.

It will be recalled that a relative of the president, lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea, who three years ago said the following on the television programme, Good Evening Ghana:

“If you remove the role of the Akyem people from the history of this country, we won’t have a history… The guy who named this country is from Akufo-Addo’s background. The one who wanted Ghana called Ghana… [was] J. B. Danquah….” Mr. Akyea went on to cite the Big Six, the leaders of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) who were arrested by the British colonialists after the 1948 riots that accelerated the independence process, and reminded viewers that the president’s father, among the six, “was one of the individuals who are acclaimed as the pioneers of our independence.”

    WHO NAMED GHANA

    Dr NII MOI’S Article

Fact: That was simply impossible, as by 1957 Danquah’s political career was effectively over (he and Ofori-Atta having lost their seats to the CPP in the 1954 and 1956 elections). Only Nkrumah as prime minister in 1957 was in a position to propose that name, and he did. Danquah and the others criticised Nkrumah for choosing the name Ghana, and in his autobiography Nkrumah was forced to defend his choice.

Danquah, however, had a weird obsession for naming places, like the president does today. He had proposed, without any consultations, that the Northern Territories be renamed Fergusonia, after Ekem Ferguson, the surveyor from Anomabo who had done much work in the North. The idea was rejected by the British, much like his previous suggestion to rename the Gold Coast Akanland, and later Akan-Ga, when he was reminded that there were more than Akans in the colony. (He, like the president today and his fellow tribalists, was married to a Ga woman).

His most “valiant” name-changing effort was his suggestion after the 1948 riots that he and his relatives be put in charge of the Gold Coast, under the name Ghanaland. The idea of course was laughed off by the British. He pioneered the tribalism that his inward-looking descendants are now perfecting with national resources. (Remember the president’s statement, “Yen Akanfo” during his desperate struggle to win power – and destroy the country?)

    Read below full article:

Beware, the tribal supremacists: Myths of J.B. Danquah and the Big Six

As expected, the president’s recent suggestion that the University of Ghana might be renamed after his late uncle, Dr. J.B. Danquah, the Gold Coast lawyer and “nationalist,” has provoked a firestorm of criticism from a public that has clearly had enough of the tribal-supremacist agenda of the president and his kinsmen.

And none of them have articulated the rationale behind this agenda more brazenly than a relative of the president, lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea, who three years ago said the following on the television programme, Good Evening Ghana:

“If you remove the role of the Akyem people from the history of this country, we won’t have a history… The guy who named this country is from Akufo-Addo’s background. The one who wanted Ghana called Ghana… [was] J. B. Danquah….” Mr. Akyea went on to cite the Big Six, the leaders of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) who were arrested by the British colonialists after the 1948 riots that accelerated the independence process, and reminded viewers that the president’s father, among the six, “was one of the individuals who are acclaimed as the pioneers of our independence.”

With this crude concoction of facts and fiction, they tend to believe that they own the country and can do as they please. Textbooks, for instance, have been doctored and Danquah given disproportionate prominence in Ghana’s history.

This peasant aristocracy sense of entitlement, especially among people occupying national offices, is a threat to social cohesion and national development. So let us demolish forthwith a few myths about J.B. Danquah and the Big Six, and tackle other aspects of Ghanaian history that the tribalists have bastardised to drive this dangerous ideology of tribal supremacy. (For the record, I condemn the term “Akyem mafia,” or any term that demonises an entire tribe for the folly of a few).

Myth No. 1: Danquah’s research linked the Akan of Ghana to the ancient Ghana Empire.

Fact: That credit goes to Rev. J. B. Anaman, of Anomabo and Sekondi, whose research took place in 1895, the year Danquah was born.

Myth No. 2: Danquah founded the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC).

Fact: Danquah himself described George Alfred (Paa) Grant, the wealthy Gold Coast merchant, as the “architect and founder of the UGCC.”

Myth No. 3: UGCC was the first political party in the Gold Coast.

Fact: The earliest known political parties (for municipal, not national, elections) were mainly the Accra Rate Payers Association and the Ga Manbii (Ga Nationalist) Party of Kojo Thompson in the 1920s. Lesser-known parties, such as the Asene Koo Wulu Party, later emerged in Accra and other municipalities like Cape Coast and Sekondi in the 1930s; never in Abuakwa, Danquah’s hometown. By the time the UGCC was founded in Saltpond in 1947, there were already other (if generally inactive) parties, particularly, the Gold Coast People’s League and the Gold Coast National Party. As a result, the name originally proposed by the founders was changed from Gold Coast People’s Party (GCPP) to United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), to rein in the other parties.

Myth No. 4: The Big Six were the architects of the 28th February 1948 demo that propelled Ghana’s independence movement.

Fact: George Padmore, Kwame Nkrumah’s political advisor, stated in his book, The Gold Coast Revolution, that the Big Six did “not” initiate the demonstration. Nkrumah was away from Accra on the 28th , and Danquah and the other four initially condemned the ex-service men for the violence that had been instigated by the reckless shooting of unarmed demonstrators by a trigger-happy British officer named Colin Imray. The British arrested the six politicians – Kwame Nkrumah, Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, Edward Akufo-Addo, J.B. Danquah, William Ofori-Atta, and Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey – more for their UGCC work than any direct involvement in the events of 28th February.

Who then was the architect of 28th February? That credit goes mainly to Mr. B. E. A Tamakloe, general secretary of the Ex-servicemen’s Union, who negotiated the demonstration with the governor; to whom the governor addressed all letters; and in whose name the permit for the demonstration was issued. He was supported by five other people, according to the Watson Commission’s report, making them the Real Big Six, but the five were not named.

    However, all eight executives of the Union who planned the demo were named, giving us the Big Eight: (1) B. E. A. Tamakloe; (2) S. A. Codjoe; (3) R. T. Dodoo; (4) J. S. Laryea; (5) R. P. Craig; (6) F. L. Adjei; (7) J. D. Ankrah; and (8) G. E. Lutterodt. We need a proper history of Ghana.

And then there were the 29 martyrs who died from the disturbances of the 28th and the days that followed, including Sgt. Cornelius Nii Adjetey; Corporal Patrick Attipoe, and Private Odartey Lamptey, who were murdered by Imray. The Big Six, as a group, were accidental beneficiaries of history, their individual contributions to the nationalist movement notwithstanding.

Myth No. 5: Ashantis did not play any role in the independence movement because they don’t appear in the Big Six.

Fact: Ghana’s history is bigger than the Big Six, despite efforts by Danquah’s descendants to make the Big Six (and, within the Big Six, their relatives) the alpha and omega of our history. Krobo Edusei of the Ashanti Youth Association (AYA) was the chairman of the Kumasi committee of the nation-wide Anti-Inflation Campaign that was organised by Mantse Nii Kwabena Bonne (a chief of both Osu and Techiman, then part of Ashanti) in 1948.

When the Big Six were incarcerated in Kumasi, AYA plotted to storm the prison and free them, prompting the governor to whisk them to the Northern Territories, under stricter security, for fear that the hard-nosed AYA members may still make their way up north. Edusei later served nine months in jail for his political activism alongside Nkrumah. The AYA, in its militancy, had also demanded “self-government within the next five years,” compared to the UGCC’s gradualist approach of self-government “in the shortest possible time”.

The AYA, the Osu Youth Association, and the Sekondi Youth Association were among the youth groups that dragged Nkrumah from the UGCC and forced him to form the Convention People’s Party (CPP), which led Ghana to independence. They were the original foot soldiers! The proposed name for their new party was Ghana People’s Party, but Nkrumah asked that “Ghana” be reserved for independence and replaced it with “Convention” to show continuity, at least in name, from the UGCC.

Myth No. 6: Danquah named the Gold Coast Ghana.

Myth No. 7: Danquah was the “doyen of Gold Coast politicians”.

Fact: The Watson Commission described him as such but suggested that this was before Nkrumah came on the scene. Thus, in the 1951 election, Nkrumah won over 95% of the votes (from prison!) whilst Danquah scraped through with only 53% (and Ofori-Atta with 51%) in Abuakwa. In the 1954 election, both Danquah and Ofori-Atta, running on Busia’s Ghana Congress Party (GCP) after the collapse of the UGCC in 1951, lost to CPP upstarts, despite threats from the Okyenhene to deport anyone who voted for the CPP. Of the 104 seats, the GCP won only one – by Busia, who squeezed through his Wenchi constituency with an 11-vote victory over his CPP rival.

Danquah and Ofori-Atta again lost the 1956 elections, exposing the limits of Danquah’s purported doyenness. He was a novice when it came to political organisation and electioneering, no match for Nkrumah, the consummate organiser, strategist, orator, and man of the people. Whilst Nkrumah wore batakari, Danquah preferred his three-piece suit in the hot African sun, making him a stranger to his own people.

Myth No. 8: Kwame Nkrumah hated Ashantis.

Fact: The opposite was true. Nkrumah loved Ashanti and Ashanti loved him (and the CPP) back. One of the most fanatical members of the CPP was an Asante woman from Bekwai (but lived in Kumasi) who named herself Ama Nkrumah (the female version of Kwame Nkrumah) and pledged support to Nkrumah and the CPP with her blood. The CPP swept five of the six seats in the 1950 Kumasi municipal elections (6,210 votes versus 50 for the opposition), and would have won the sixth seat had it not been for a technical disqualification.

Ashanti was the first to benefit from Nkrumah’s Accelerated Education Programme of 1951, with the establishment of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and Opoku Ware Secondary School in 1952, among others. Despite the terror attacks by the National Liberation Movement (NLM) in 1956 against CPP members, which led to an exodus of CPP refugees from Ashanti, the CPP won 8 seats in Ashanti, compared to 12 for the NLM in the 1956 election. The CPP won 43% of the total Ashanti vote and claimed NLM strongholds like Obuase and Asante Akyem hands down.

Suffice it to say that there is more to Ghana’s history than the Big Six, in whose shadow some now seek relevance and pre-eminence for their dead relatives. It appears that without the Big Six, they are nothing, unlike Nkrumah, whose legacy goes beyond the Big Six and stands on its own.

The public’s swift and no-nonsense rejection of the president’s loose talk about renaming UG after his uncle is a pointed reminder that Ghanaians would not tolerate the bastardisation of their history by any group or tribe, no matter how powerful or privileged they might feel.

Power, after all, in a democracy like Ghana’s, is fleeting. A word to the wise….

In 2020 and 2022, when the economy faced the impact of both external shocks and the Covid-19 pandemic, the Bank of Ghana extended financial assistance to the government. Specifically, the central bank allocated ¢10 billion in 2022 to address the Covid-19 crisis, and it initiated the Covid-19 Pandemic Bond on behalf of the government.

“First, it will be important to recall the circumstances under which the Government of Ghana decided to seek International Monetary Fund support. Ghana had lost access to the International Capital Market, domestic revenue was significantly underperforming and not realised, pushing the state of government finances into near external and domestic default. With the above, the policy choices were not that of business as usual but rather a more challenging conduct of macroeconomic policy in the context of crisis”.

“The government needed to finance critical expenditures for which Bank of Ghana needed to provide the necessary financing to avert a disorderly default of both servicing for domestic and external debt including financing critical imports to keep the economy on the stable path”, it added.

Furthermore, due to the closure of the capital market in Ghana, the central bank disbursed ¢37.9 billion in 2022 as budgetary support to enable the government to manage essential expenses such as salaries and debt obligations.

The Bank of Ghana defended its actions by highlighting the dire circumstances that necessitated its involvement. The government faced challenges with access to the international capital market, plummeting domestic revenue, and a risk of default on both domestic and external debt payments. Given this context, the bank viewed its financial support as critical to maintaining stability and averting disorderly defaults.

The central bank clarified that its financing actions were part of crisis management strategies rather than business-as-usual decisions. It emphasized that the suspension of the Fiscal Responsibility Act, 2018 (Act 982) by the Ghanaian Parliament in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic crisis contributed to the circumstances.

Addressing concerns about parliamentary oversight, the Bank of Ghana addressed a claim from the opposition. The majority leader, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, stated that the Bank of Ghana was not legally required to seek parliamentary clearance before exceeding the 5% budget deficit financing threshold. He explained that the central bank’s obligation was to report foreign exchange receipts to Parliament, a mandate that it had consistently fulfilled.
