Video: Arrested fetish priest in demolition fiasco says “I could have varnished”

The arrested fetish priest who took a stand during the recent demolition exercise in Nima has shared his side of the story. Nii Odiasempa, asserting his clan’s ownership of the land, described his motivation for intervening in the demolition process that occurred on Tuesday, August 15.

Upon learning of the demolition of structures in the Nima community, Nii Odiasempa, deeply angered, turned to his ancestral beliefs for guidance. He believed that his clan had a rightful claim to the Nima lands, and so he consulted his ancestors for a course of action. He revealed that his ancestors instructed him on the appropriate response, leading him to be present at the demolition site adorned in leaves and holding a bottle of schnapps.

He clarified that he did not intend to engage in physical confrontation but rather to demonstrate a symbolic protest using traditional symbols and rituals. He mentioned that pouring alcohol on the demolition vehicles was part of the ritualistic process he was engaged in to protect the land.

However, his actions caught the attention of the police, who urged him to remain calm. Unbeknownst to him, as he chanted and performed his rituals, the police vehicle was parked nearby. This led to his arrest and subsequent detainment at the police station, a development that took him by surprise.

Despite his frustration, Nii Odiasempa voiced a desire for fairness and understanding. He called on both the government and the traditional council to consider the plight of Nima residents and to approach such situations with care. He conveyed that the sudden and unannounced demolition negatively affected the community.

The priest emphasized his attachment to the land, asserting that they had documents proving their ownership claims. He expressed disappointment that no prior communication had taken place before the demolition.

In retrospect, Nii Odiasempa revealed a remarkable detail. He possessed the ability to vanish, a supernatural capability he refrained from using during the incident. He conveyed a mix of regret and rationale, indicating that his respect for the police led him to not utilize this ability.

  • Ghana unlikely to meet target for cocoa production due to politicisation of COCOBOD – Bright Simons

The sweet aroma of Ghana’s famed cocoa harvest may soon be tinged with a hint of bitterness, as the nation is likely to grapple with the daunting reality of falling short of its cocoa production targets, Bright Simons has predicted.

He says his sources at the Ghana Cocoa Board have revealed that the country may not reach its target for production this year.

At the heart of this growing concern, he disclosed is the alleged politicization of the Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).

“Our sources say that even the 650,000 tons of cocoa Ghana is targeting this season, the lowest in 13 years, may not be met. Due to rampant politicisation of Cocobod, the state-owned monopoly & the appointment of political agents to key roles, the sector risks total collapse,” he said in Tweet.

COCOBOD, responsible for regulating and supporting cocoa production across the nation, has long been regarded as a linchpin of Ghana’s economic stability.

However, as the country strives to achieve its cocoa production objectives, concerns have emerged over whether political influences have begun to overshadow its operational efficiency.

Simons’ concerns echo the sentiments of many who see the potential for political agendas to derail the meticulous planning and execution required for a successful cocoa harvest.

I sponsored Samini’s music career at the age of 14 – Ayisha Modi

Ayisha Modi has once again made some shocking revelations, and this time the socialite has revealed that when she was just 14 years old, she sponsored the music career of Samini, one of Ghana’s talented musicians.

She claims that by the time she was 14, she was friends with musicians like Samini and used any money she made to support the musician’s career, which included paying for studio sessions among other things.

According to Ayisha Modi, she typically used the money her mother gave her to pay for other expenses at home and perform such kind deeds.

In an interview on OBI TV and shared by thosecalledcelebss on Instagram, she said: “By the age of 14, I used to walk with musicians like Samini, and I used to sponsor Samini’s music career. I paid for their studio time anytime they had a studio session. Sometimes, when my mother sends me on an errand to the market, I use the money to sponsor Samini, then I will lie to her that the money got missing.”

    Watch interview

The socialite went on to explain why she was acting in that way, claiming that it was not because of the artist but rather a gift from God.

“It was not about Samini; this is a gift from God. I give to people who are talented and have brighter futures but are unable to fund their careers because no one knows what the future holds,” Ayisha Modi told the host.

Ayisha Modi revealed that in addition to funding Samini’s career, she was also in charge of looking after her family while her mother was away.

She also bragged of having GHC20,000 (200 million) at the age of 13 years.

“By the age of 13, I was the one taking care of the family when my mother was not around. By the age of 13, if you ask me for GHC20,000 (200 million), I would be able to provide such an amount of money”, she stated.

Rick Ross acquires $37 million mansion for real estate collection

American rapper Rick Ross has expanded his real estate holdings with the acquisition of a lavish $37 million mansion situated on Star Island in Miami Beach. According to realtor Kimberly Knausz from ONE Sotheby’s International Realty, the mansion’s grand entrance, which is characterised by a long driveway leading to it, exudes opulence.

Ross was drawn to the property because it was different from other contemporary homes because of its distinctive architecture.

The contract was negotiated by Ross’s sister, Tawanda Roberts, a real estate agent with Florida Realty of Miami. The rapper Rick Ross recently purchased a 12,374-square-foot mansion with 100 feet of waterfront on a 40,000-square-foot lot. The impressive home has a chef’s kitchen, a primary suite with a view of the bay, six bedrooms, and eight and a half bathrooms. There is direct access to the bay and the ocean, a heated pool, a summer kitchen, and a 40-foot dock. According to Daily Mail, Ross already owns a number of opulent homes, so he views this investment as a significant addition to his assets.

In addition to having residences in Texas and Atlanta, the rapper declared ownership of NBA player Amar’e Stoudemire’s Florida residence two years ago. The rapper also owns the Zamunda palace from “Coming 2 America.” There are 109 rooms total on the estate, including 12 bedrooms, 21 bathrooms, and a dining room that can accommodate 100 people. A 135-seat theatre, a 350,000-gallon pool, a bowling alley, and a boxing gym are also included.

The 45,000-square-foot mansion was acquired by Ross for a discounted price of $5.8 million. The property, originally owned by boxer Evander Holyfield, was built in 1994. However, Holyfield lost the home after failing to pay a $14 million debt in 2012.

Ross now intends to further customize his Star Island mansion to align with his distinctive aesthetic preferences. The Star Island area boasts multimillion-dollar homes owned by notable individuals such as hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Diddy, and Jennifer Lopez. These prominent neighbors contribute to the area’s allure and are part of what makes these expensive properties so sought-after.

Mr. Logic, has shared his perspective on the controversy that erupted on Saturday, August 13, 2023, on the United Showbiz programme on UTV.

Mr. Logic said he felt humiliated and disrespected when Mzz Gee interrupted his submission when he was telling his side of the story to Fifi Pratt on Kingdom 107.7 FM. He continued by saying that although he does not remember doing anything to offend Mzgee, he believes she harbours some negative feelings towards him.

“I don’t know what I have done to Mz Gee, but sitting in the seat as a panelist, lots of people have been asking me if I had done anything to offend her. This is not the first time something like this has happened. I don’t remember doing anything to her. I remember when she was with media general, she used to call me to panel her show on short notice. I never saw any such disrespect from her. It was when she got to UTV that I started noticing certain behaviours towards me,” he said.

He admitted that he was debating whether to report her to Father Dickson, who served as both her mentor and the executive producer of the United Showbiz programme, but ultimately decided to let sleeping dogs lie and move on.

“She said sorry to me and I said sorry to her. I have taken the matter off my mind. I have let go because these things happen, I am not angry at her, I was just not happy with her.

57% of Ghanaians were home owners in the year 2000

More households in Ghana were homeowners in the 2000 according to data sourced from Trading Economics – a global data provision centre.

There was a sharp decline of 10% after 10 years pushing the Home Ownership Rate in Ghana to a 47% in the year 2010.

According to Stats GH, an independent non-partisan, crowd-sourced verified data aggregation platform, in the same year thus, 2010, the percentage of renters rose from 22% to 31% during this timeframe.

The prospects of homeownership for this generation seem to be diminishing with the underlying factors listed below

Lack of Continuity Due to Consistent Change of Government
Ghana has suffered a lot of setbacks in provision of public housing due to lack of continuity from the part of government. The result has contributed to the housing situation facing the country at the moment. For instance, in seeking to boost housing supply, the Government of Ghana in the year 2005 pursued various programs such as the affordable housing program to build over 100,000 thousand units of housing through Private, Public Partnerships (PPP) across the country (Bank of Ghana, 2007). However, just after a change of government in the year 2009 all the projects have been abandoned and left to squatters up till now with no tangible reason given to complete them. This housing project when completed in any case could have accommodated hundreds of families (Ghanaweb, 2012).

      Rural-Urban Migrations

Another major factor causing housing deficit in Ghana has been attributed to rural-urban drift. This according to Business World Ghana (2012) has increased the pressure on urban housing. Consequently, provision of housing has scarcely moved in tandem with demand, leading to pockets of slums and communities that seem to consist entirely of kiosks, containers and little by way of plumbing or drainage. Specifically, this can illustrate a situation of urban poverty especially in major cities and towns. For instance, in the year 2005, as a result of acute shortage of housing and poor conditions of housing, sub-Saharan Africa had 199 million slum dwellers constituting 20% of the world’s total slum population and had the highest urban growth rate of 4.58% and the high annual slum growth rate of 4.53%. However, Ghana in the same year had 5.4 million slum dwellers and is anticipated to reach 7.1 million by 2020. The worse hit cities are Accra, Kumasi and Sekondi-Takoradi as explained by UN-HABITAT (2006).

      Population Growth and Urbanization

Ghana’s urban centers are at bursting streams from rural-urban drifts and bear the brunt of rapid urbanization. It is estimated that Ghana’s urban population will be about 52% of the national total growth and centered to this rapid urban growth are serious housing shortages and poor sanitation (UN-HABITAT, 2006). An increased in population growth and urbanization had made housing as one of the most serious problems presently faced by the government. The rapid population growth in the past few decades has been complemented by a relatively slow rate of increase in housing in many parts of the country. The rapid population growth in Ghana for instance is straining urban infrastructure, and degrading social amenities and shelter conditions, particularly in the Accra and Tema Metropolis (Modern Ghana, 2010).

      Inadequate Mortgage Financing Institution

Apart from rapid population growth which is not met with increasing supply of housing, there is also a problem of mortgage financing. In well developed countries, the mortgage industry has proved to be the most capable and superior financier of the housing needs of the population (Bank of Ghana 2007). However, access to decent affordable house/home is the biggest challenge facing a greater proportion of the population in Ghana. This is due to the fact that, the Ghanaian economy is limited by fewer savings and borrowing than that of more developed countries. In addition, the demand for resources in all sectors of the economy also results in an under-funded housing finance system as described by Okonkwo (1997). Moreover, the problem of housing finance among the banks in Ghana is that most of them are portfolio lenders as pointed by Noah (2002). This means that the banks run a low-cost and low risk business where mortgage lending fits well in relation to other investment activities. In other instances, the banks have short- term funding and are unable to lend on a medium- or long term basis, the support of mortgage financing which takes about 25 to 30 years before full payment is made, is not common and all these problems have crippled the housing industry. Now it has become the biggest challenge facing a greater proportion of the population in Ghana to access decent affordable house/home (Noah, 2002).

      High Cost of Land

Land is a fundamental resource to every country’s economic and social growth, since it is seen as an economic good

more than just a social good. In time past, a small amount of money was paid as allegiance of holding the land for economic or social activities. Nowadays, in urban property markets uncertainty over the ownership of land, long delays in approvals and the issue of titles, unscrupulous land sales, lack of compliance with planning requirements, delayed provision of infrastructure and other services, ill-disciplined land agents and corruption in all aspects of the industry have led to distortions and inefficiencies in urban land markets (CDD, 2000). Moreover, Dr. Tweneboah, the immediate past president of Ghana Real Estate Development Association also made this same assertion. He attributed the high percentage of vacant land available for development to behaviour of some traditional rulers who treat stool lands which by the constitution of Ghana are not saleable but only alienable by lease and consideration payable thereof is ground rent (Daily Graphic, 2012). The implication of this situation is that the cost of land to the purchasers is much higher than it should be. As a result, developers are only able to purchase few tracts of land for development and this affects the contribution of housing production.

      Defective Land Tenure System

The cause of defective land tenure system in Ghana has been attributed to the traditional land administration system where ownership of land takes different forms; each with peculiar legal rights and incidents attached thereto (Ollenu, 1962; Appiah, 2007). Ownership is often unclear and the processes are bogged down by bureaucracy. As a result, it has become a major barrier to real estate developers to be able to obtain large tracts of land for real estate development. Moreover, the absence of efficient system of land ownership inventory has resulted in multiple sale of land creating an issue for real estate developers. This dispute has often led to unnecessary delays of projects as a result of legal suits (Appiah, 2007).

      High Cost of Building Materials

The provision of infrastructure and affordable housing for the citizens is constrained by high cost of building materials (BRRI, 2012; Danso & Manu, 2013). Building materials account for 50 percent of the total cost of construction in Ghana (Asibuo, 1994). In addition, the high cost of building materials in Ghana is attributed by the over-dependence on imported raw materials for buildings for which local substitutes could be used if the necessary supports are given to the manufacturers (Yeboah, 2005).

Lack of Infrastructure and Provision of Utility Services

Infrastructural development is one of the components in the construction industry. The provisions of these infrastructures boost the development and attract potential investors to such areas. However, in many parts of Ghana such infrastructures and services are lacked. Therefore, the lag in infrastructure provision by Metropolitan and Municipal District Assemblies and service providers in newly developing areas have affected the production of housing (UN-Habitat, 2011). The developers estimated that infrastructure varies from 10 per cent to 30 per cent of the price of a dwelling, depending on the location of the site in relation to the existing infrastructure. However, developers end up bearing all these costs which affects the cost of production. This makes it impossible to provide houses which are affordable to the housing market.

GFA General Secretary promises fair and transparent elections in 2023

Prosper Harrison Addo, the General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has made a resounding commitment that the next GFA elections will stand as a monument to openness and justice. This is a crucial gesture to protect the integrity of Ghanaian football.

This reassurance follows the election committee’s announcement that Kurt Okraku, the incumbent, and George Afriyie, a formidable candidate and a former vice president of the organisation, will square off in the GFA Presidential contest.

According to the election roadmap, the vetting process will start on August 21 and go through August 25 in preparation for the Elective Congress, which is slated for September 27.

In this decisive moment for Ghanaian football, eleven football administrators, including Kingsley Osei Bonsu, Nana Sarfo Oduro, Frederick Acheampong, Dr. Tony Aubynn, Dr. Randy Abbey, Onyina Asenso, Edmund Ackah, Kwesi Appiah, Elloeny Amande, Raphael Gyambrah, and Alhaji Moro Akambi, are set to compete for five Executive Committee (Exco) positions within the Premier League clubs.

GFA Vice President Mark Addo, Samuel Anim Addo, Eugene Nii Amon, Gideon Fosu, and Alexander Ababio are vying for the three slots up for grabs on the Division One League Clubs Exco in a tight race.

Gifty Oware-Mensah, the bankroller of Berry Ladies, is running unopposed for a position on the Women’s Football Clubs Exco, highlighting her unique standing within this group.

In addition, 19 other administrators will be running for seats as chairmen of regional football associations, demonstrating the depth of interest in and commitment to guiding Ghanaian football’s future at the regional level.

    2. Griezmann ieager to join the ‘great’ Messi in MLS

Griezmann ieager to join the ‘great’ Messi in MLS

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann has said that he follows the “incredible” Lionel Messi’s performances at Inter Miami and that he still intends to finish his career playing in Major League Soccer.

Messi, 36, has scored nine goals in six games for Inter Miami, including a 4-1 victory at Philadelphia Union on Tuesday to go to the Leagues Cup final. He has done this in each of his outings for Inter Miami thus far.

Griezmann, a former Barcelona colleague of Messi‘s, has long been a fan of American sports and culture and has made no secret of his desire to live in Major League Soccer (MLS).

Griezmann acknowledged following Messi during a virtual news conference LaLiga and ESPN held to celebrate the beginning of the new LaLiga season. “Leo is the greatest ever. He is winning games, packing stadiums, and scoring a lot of goals.

He is great, and in terms of marketing and football, I believe bringing in Leo was the best move made by MLS.

Griezmann, 32, was one of LaLiga’s top players last season, helping Atletico Madrid finish third in the league behind Barcelona and Real Madrid while scoring 15 goals and dishing out a league-high 16 assists.

While the France international made it clear that his ultimate goal is to “make history” at Atletico, he also expressed a desire to test his luck in America.

Griezmann stated, “I’ve always said it. “My goal is to get there, playing in MLS and enjoying myself, being able to win things, and being at my best, with everything that I adore about American sports.

“First and foremost, I want to win trophies at Atleti and establish history here. Then, we’ll see… I believe the league will benefit from Leo Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba’s addition. The best thing the league can do is that, along with bringing in younger players, particularly from South America.

Griezmann said that he would have to discuss it with his family and children if he were to follow the exodus of famous athletes to Saudi Arabia. They’re really high [income] figures, they may give you security, but he stated he’s currently focused on helping Atletico Madrid contend for the LaLiga championship, a prize he has yet to take home.

Griezmann stated, “I want to get better, score goals, be significant, win the league, and compete for the Champions League.” “You have all these goals, but for me personally, it’s about improving on last year and becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer with 16 or 17 goals. That is something that interests me.

Griezmann expressed sympathy for teammate Joo Félix, who was jeered by Atletico supporters prior to their 3-1 victory over Granada on Monday after making it known that he wanted to go with Barcelona.

When he left for Barca in 2019, he commented, “I experienced it.” I damaged the club. The greatest thing I could have done was to remain quiet, put in a lot of effort, and try to re-enter Diego Simeone’s and the club’s plans. I can only say that.

“Let’s hope it can be resolved for everyone, including the team, Joo, and the rest of us in the locker room, so we can go forward. You can see that it can’t be simple for him.

    3. We are going to Niger with our own resources; we don’t need UN express permission – ECOWAS military chiefs

We are going to Niger with our own resources; we don’t need UN express permission – ECOWAS military chiefs

Commissioner for Political Affairs for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Abdel-Fatau Musah, has stated that ECOWAS does not need the express permission of the United Nations before taking any decision or embarking on any action.

On the sidelines of the first day of the ECOWAS military chiefs meeting convened in Accra on August 17, 2023, he stated that the community intends to intervene in Niger with its own resources, and did not require permission from any external organization.

“We are going to Niger with our own resources. Anybody who wants to help us, fair enough,” he said and further refuted claims that the Peace and Security Council of the African Union has dissociated themselves from the move. He labeled such news as “fake.”

“Why is it in Africa that people start asking why don’t you go to the Security Council? Did the Russians go to the Security Council before going to Ukraine, and those pumping weapons into Ukraine, are they asking the Security Council? When Libya was attacked, was it a security sector authorisation?” he asked.

Additionally, he asserted that the suggested intervention aims to prevent the recurrence of such activities across the continent.

“There’s a time you have to draw the line in the sand. There have been 3 successful coups and no muscular approach was applied and this doesn’t mean that we should allow the domino to continue,” he said.

Also, he stated that ECOWAS has the full support of the UN, though clarifying that this doesn’t necessarily equate to an endorsement from the Security Council.

“The UN has condemned the coup, they are supporting the actions of the ECOWAS. When the UN supports, it doesn’t mean it is like an approval from the Security Council. The UN Secretariat has supported us and we are constantly working with the special representative for the Secretary General for West Africa which also shows their support to what we are doing,” he said.

As a follow-up to the directive of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government at its Extraordinary Summit on the political situation in the Republic of Niger held on 10th August 2023 in Abuja, Nigeria, the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff (CCDC) has commenced the activation of the ECOWAS Standby Force for the restoration of constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.

To this end, the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff will be having an extraordinary meeting in Accra, Ghana from 17th to 18th August 2023 to finalise plans for the deployment of the Standby Force.

Addressing the gathering on the first day of the meeting, Minister of Defence of Ghana Dominic Nitiwul mentioned that some countries including Mali, Guinea, etc., were not present.

“Four of our member states [Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Niger] are now facing sanctions for resorting to unconstitutional change of government which contradicts the ECOWAS protocol on good governance and democracy,” he explained.

    4. Hero of Senegal’s opposition receives intensive care

Hero of Senegal’s opposition receives intensive care

Popular Ousmane Sonko, the head of the Senegalese opposition who has been on a two-week hunger strike in protest of his imprisonment, has reportedly been admitted to urgent care, according to his allies.

A Pastef party member named Ousseynou Ly asserted that Mr. Sonko was afflicted with a disease that hit last night. The Senegalese government has ordered the Pastef party to be shut down.

A medical source at Hospital Principal in Dakar’s capital city verified his transfer to the intensive care unit to the BBC.

After accusing and imprisoning Mr. Sonko for, among other things, insurrection and conspiracy against the state, Pastef claims that the authorities are “responsible” for his predicament. The authorities have not released a statement regarding Mr. Sonko’s health.

He intends to run for president in February of next year, but since he was under investigation in a moral corruption case in 2021, he has been in a contentious power battle with the government.

The rights and freedom of Ousmane Sonko are all we seek for from the government of Senegal, according to Habib Sy, leader of the opposition alliance Yewwi Askan Wi.

Mr. Sonko was given a two-month prison sentence in absentia in June, which he claimed was driven by politics.

According to Amnesty International, that sparked irate fights between the supporters, which resulted in the deaths of 24 individuals.

He was detained the next month, and just this week he was accused of inciting uprising.

    5. Cecilia Dapaah’s husband arrested by OSP

Cecilia Dapaah’s husband arrested by OSP

Spouse of ex-Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah, Daniel Osei Kuffour, has been taken into custody as part of ongoing inquiries into purported corruption and related offenses. This follows reports of funds allegedly misappropriated from their residence.

This fresh revelation emerged during court proceedings as the office of the Special Prosecutor submitted an application to validate an order for freezing the bank accounts of Cecilia Dapaah. Additionally, they sought to confiscate approximately $590,000 and GHC 2,730,000 discovered at her residence in Abelemkpe.

However, the judge overseeing the proceedings raised a question regarding the singular focus on investigating Cecilia Dapaah, considering that the allegedly tainted funds were discovered in her marital residence.

Responding to this, Dr. Isidore Tuffour, the representative of the special prosecutor’s office, stated that Cecilia Dapaah’s spouse had also been taken into custody.

But the lawyer for Cecilia Dapaah noted that this was information to them as her client is not aware of the supposed arrest of her husband.

Meanwhile, Cecilia Dapaah has described the application of the special prosecutor to confirm a freeze and seizure order against her properties as an attempt to perpetuate the arbitrary exercise of power based on the misrepresentation of facts and the resultant media frenzy.

Her lawyers made this known when they opposed the application on Thursday.

Lawyers of the anti-corruption agency and the former sanitation minister on Thursday argued before Justice Edward Twum on whether the orders for seizure and freezing of the properties should be confirmed.

The office of the special prosecutor represented by Dr. Isidore Tuffour argued that the order is in line with the office of the Special prosecutor ACT (959) to prevent concealment of a property believed to be tainted with corruption.

The confirmation application by the office of the special prosecutor is aimed at seizing $590,000 and GHC 2,730,000 found in her home upon a search of three houses associated with her.

On this, Dr. Tuffour revealed in court that Cecilia Dapaah could not explain how she came by the funds and the ownership of the allegedly stolen monies is in dispute.

For the lawyer, these justify their application for confirmation of the seizure order. He contended that the office suspects the monies found to be tainted with corruption.

Lawyers for Cecilia Dapaah, led by Victoria Barth on the other hand argued that the application for confirmation was brought in contravention with the procedure outlined in the office of the special prosecutor ACT.

She contended that the office of the special prosecutor ACt 959 in section 32(2) mandates the office to bring the application for confirmation within seven days after the seizure. She argued that the instant application was filed after the seven days had elapsed.

Victoria Barth further urged before the court that the fact that substantial amounts were found in the home of her clients does not justify the seizure of the property. It is her view that the applicant has not shown any grounds to prove that the monies found are tainted.

The special prosecutor’s office is also seeking to freeze the bank accounts of the former sanitation minister at Prudential Bank and Societe General. The lawyers of the anti-corruption contended that for their plea to be granted the court has to satisfy itself if the respondent is being investigated for corruption which they believe to have fulfilled.

Dr Tuffour argued that there is no requirement for them to show grounds for suspicion that the accounts are tainted.

He argued that the lawmaker under ACT 959 ‘did not provide that requirement to provide grounds for the freezing.

But lawyers of Cecilia Dapaah argued that the mere fact that their client is being investigated for corruption is not enough grounds for her accounts to be frozen.

According to her, the special prosecutor ACT requires the applicant to demonstrate reasonable grounds for believing that the property is tainted property and not just a mere assertion of the fact.

Venus Williams responds after defeating top-20 player at age of 43

Venus Williams, who beat Veronika Kudermetova in an incredible triumph at the age of 43, was thrilled to defeat a top-20 player for the first time in four years.

The Russian world No. 16 was defeated 6-3, 7-5, by the No. 533-ranked American tennis superstar at the Cincinnati Masters.

Williams found herself 4-1 down in both sets, but she overcame it by going back in time.

Williams is getting ready for the US Open, which starts on August 28, when she is expected to be given a wildcard.

Williams was overjoyed with her straight-sets victory over Kudermetova, which is a great boost ahead of the year’s last major tournament in New York. Williams is a seven-time Grand Slam champion.

Williams laughed when it was suggested to her that instead of continuing to compete on the WTA Tour, she could be enjoying retirement on a yacht: “Where would the yacht be? Do not tempt me!

“I love this game; it’s what I do, and the injuries over the past few years have been challenging.”

“I want to be strong and able to be myself when I come out here.” I want to get there because it’s important to me. Being able to win despite having little time to prepare is [gratifying].

When you’re down a double break, you may start to have simple ideas like, “Well, I at least want to just hold serve for the rest of this set,” or something like.

Then you begin to draw nearer. There are some significant holes today that I normally don’t play from, and you think, “Okay, maybe I just want to win another point.” That’s tennis, though. What makes it exciting is that.

Williams’ victory over Kudermetova put a stop to a string of three consecutive singles losses to Jelena Ostapenko, Elina Svitolina, and Madison Keys.

Williams fell to Svitolina in the opening round of Wimbledon last month, screaming in pain and appearing to twist her knee as she went down.

Svitolina won 6-4, 6-3, but Williams stood up and continued to play, focusing now on the US Open while the veteran turned her attention to the contest.

    7. Tsitsipas loses his composure during tennis match as disruptive spectator ‘imitates bee’

Tsitsipas loses his composure during tennis match as disruptive spectator ‘imitates bee’

Stefanos Tsitsipas lost his temper and demanded that the fan during his match at the Cincinnati Masters be removed because she was acting like a bee.

The Greek tennis player was preparing to serve against American world No. 40 Ben Shelton when the strange incident occurred during the Masters 1000 match.

Tsitsipas attempted to swat away what he believed to be a bee before returning to his serving routine, but the noises persisted.

The fourth-ranked player in the world stopped again before discovering that a bystander was making the buzzing sound.

Tsitsipas complained to the match referee, “There’s a person imitating a bee behind me.” Right before I serve, there is a buzz. Do you believe that is okay?

The umpire insisted that he would handle the situation, but Tsitsipas took matters into his own hands and went to where he heard the buzzing in the crowd.

As one spectator pointed to a woman in the front row in response to Tsitsipas’ direct question, the 25-year-old turned to the umpire for clarification.

When the woman behind him ‘imitates a bee’ while he is serving, Tsisipas loses his composure.

Tsitsipas continued, “It has never happened in my career.” “I am aware that they are backing the [other player],”

‘What’s happened?’ his opponent Shelton questioned. Are they addressing you?

‘No, they’re impersonating a bee, they’re buzzing ‘bzzzzzz’ – it’s the lady over there,’ Tsitsipas retorted. I want her to leave. She must leave.

The spectator attempted to discourage Tsitsipas, but he went on to win the match 7-6 7-6 and advance to the round of 16.

Tsitsipas is getting ready for the US Open, the year’s last big competition, which begins on August 28.

Although he has reached the Grand Slam finals twice, he has never made it past the third round at Flushing Meadows, so he will be hoping for better luck in New York.

It is better for you to cry with your Christian Doir, they will still break your heart – Tiwa Savage advises ladies

Nigerian Afrobeat superstar Tiwa Savage, has given some “valuable” advice for single women.

In a recent performance, the singer urged single women to allow men who were willing to show them money to do so, regardless of whether they were independent or not.

Tiwa emphasized the significance of women enjoying themselves with all the goodies and luxuries offered while dating a love interest while emphasizing that she is not encouraging women to engage in ‘runs or prostitution.

‘Runs’ is an act where a person pursues a love interest with the sole purpose of making money out of them.

Speaking at the show, Tiwa said: “I am not encouraging runs, I am not saying you should go after a man for his money. I am just saying it is sweet when he wants to spend his money on you.

“They will still break your heart anyways. So, it is better for you to cry with your Christian doir, and your birkin bag and your private jet to Dubai. We have our own money, we are just saying, his money is important and must be eaten.”

Niger coup: Did Russia consult UN before attacking Ukraine? – Abdel-Fatau Musah

Commissioner for Political Affairs for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Abdel-Fatau Musah, has expressed his astonishment and concern over the questions raised regarding ECOWAS not seeking permission from the UN Security Council before considering the use of force in Niger in response to the coup.

Speaking in an interview on the sidelines of an ECOWAS military chiefs meeting held in Accra on Thursday, August 17, 2023, he emphatically stated that ECOWAS does not need consult the UN before it takes any decision or embarks on any move that will ensure the peace and stability of the West African bloc.

“Why is it in Africa that people start asking why don’t you go to the Security Council? Did the Russians go to the Security Council before going to Ukraine, and those pumping weapons into Ukraine, are they asking the Security Council? When Libya was attacked, was it a security sector authorisation?” he asked.

Notwithstanding, he said ECOWAS has the full support of the UN, though clarifying that this doesn’t necessarily equate to an endorsement from the Security Council.

    15. Chelsea interested in Brennan Johnson of Nottingham Forest after Michael Olise’s denial

Chelsea interested in Brennan Johnson of Nottingham Forest after Michael Olise’s denial

According to rumours, Tottenham and West Ham are also interested in signing Brennan Johnson, a star player for Nottingham Forest.

The unexpected interest occurs as Chelsea’s attempt to acquire Michael Olise has now failed.

Although it was reported that the Crystal Palace winger was incensed with how their London rivals handled the situation and pondered legally accusing them “for making an illegal approach,” the Blues had reached an agreement on personal terms with the player and had activated his £35 million release clause.

However, Palace chairman Steve Parish revealed on Thursday that Olise has sensationally agreed to a fresh four-year contract with the team.

As a result, Johnson has now been added to Chelsea’s list of targets, and a deal is reportedly in the early stages of talks, according to The Guardian.

The Welsh forward is valued by Forest at roughly £45 million, but Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly willing to trade players for the 22-year-old.

He also piques the interest of fellow London clubs West Ham and Tottenham, who are each hunting for a Gianluca Scamacca and Harry Kane replacement.

Johnson made 44 appearances last season and contributed significantly to Forest’s survival in the Premier League with his 10 goals and three assists.

Given that the club has spent roughly £1 billion since Todd Boehly took over as manager last year, Chelsea’s pursuit of the player may also depend on their ability to adhere to Financial Fair Play rules.

While they expected Lewis Hall to sign a new long-term deal before loaning him out to Palace, the news that they have agreed to sell him to Newcastle for £28 million may help to alleviate some of this.

Romeo Lavia will also be officially announced as a Blue, having been signed by Southampton ahead of Liverpool.

Dr. Tony Aidoo, a prominent figure within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), received the news of Sena Nombo’s passing while being interviewed on Accra-based Radio Gold. The emotional moment was captured in a video shared by the media house. Upon learning of Nombo’s death, Dr. Aidoo expressed disbelief, hoping the news wasn’t true. However, as the journalist confirmed the sad news, Dr. Aidoo’s emotions became evident.

He reminisced about Sena Nombo, affectionately calling her “Araba Reform” due to her association with the Reform Party during a time when rumors circulated that she had left the NDC to join the Reform Party. Despite their playful interactions, Nombo always resisted such teasing. Dr. Aidoo’s voice quivered as he reflected on their past exchanges and the news of her passing.

Dr. Aidoo’s concern deepened as he lamented the recent loss of other prominent NDC members, like Shirley, and noted the party’s significant losses. He was particularly troubled by the succession of stalwart members leaving the party.

Madam Araba Tagoe’s passing came as a shock to NDC members. While the exact cause of her death remains undisclosed, sources suggest that she had been battling health issues for an extended period. Her demise is a profound loss for the party, and her absence will be acutely felt. Araba Tagoe was an influential member of the NDC, notably serving as Women’s Organiser within the party’s Western Region. Her dedication to the NDC and her role as a Women’s Organiser reflected her commitment to advocating for women’s rights and their active involvement in politics.

Her legacy within the NDC stands as a testament to her contributions to the party and her advocacy for gender equality in the political sphere.

It has since remained unresolved though government promised to remain resolute in seeking justice for Mr Suale.

Lewis Hall up for sale as Chelsea wants £30 million for Newcastle and Crystal Palace as target

Lewis Hall, a talented teenager who Chelsea is willing to sell this summer, is valued at £30 million.

In spite of the club’s strange and turbulent season, Hall earned his Premier League debut for the Blues last year and made nine appearances in the top division.

The 18-year-old, who has earned England Under-21 caps, is clearly liked at Stamford Bridge because he signed a new deal this summer that keeps him with the team through the year 2030.

According to The Telegraph, Chelsea’s initial intention was to loan Hall out for this season, which is still a possibility, but they are also willing to sell him to a buyer.

The adolescent is reportedly a target for Newcastle United and Crystal Palace, but according to the source, if they want to buy him permanently, they would have to fork over £30 million.

Hall won’t be playing frequently this season under Mauricio Pochettino, but Chelsea is still open to loaning him out if they don’t get the kind of offer they’re looking for.

Academy-made goods This summer, Chelsea already lost Mason Mount and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to Manchester United and AC Milan, respectively. Trevoh Chalobah and Callum Hudson-Odoi are set to follow them out of the club.

Selling indigenous talent is one method to recover some money after Chelsea’s massive spending over the past year, yet there is no assurance that their buying spree has ended for the summer just yet.

    20. Here are four exercises that can help you enhance your focus

Here are four exercises that can help you enhance your focus

Distractions are as common in today’s busy world as air. We need a lot of power to stay steadfast and focused in order to avoid being carried away by the noise. Unbelievably, just like the muscles in our body, our brains can be shaped and strengthened to become more resilient and potent. This is not merely a poetic allusion. An accurate representation of how the mind works is to think of it as a muscle, not just as an analogy.

Our attention “muscles” have a set strength and endurance at any given time, just like our biceps and quads do. They will wither if you leave them unoccupied; if you intentionally exercise them, they will flourish.

But just as our muscles cry out for a break after a strenuous workout, so do our minds after a prolonged period of concentration. Have you ever experienced a sinking feeling in your stomach before engaging in a gruelling workout or a lengthy read? That voice whispering “Maybe, not today” is the source. However, it is at those very times that we must brace ourselves, take a deep breath, and dive in.

That voice may reappear midway through an article or in the middle of a strenuous workout, pleading with us to give up, switch tabs, or pack up our gym gear. But if we push ourselves just a little bit harder, it is amazing to see the reserves of strength and focus we actually have.

Here I’m going to share with you 4 simple exercises that can help improve your focus.

      1. Mindful Breathing: Practice taking slow and deep breaths while focusing your attention solely on your breath. This exercise can train your mind to stay in the present moment.
      2. Meditation: Spend a few minutes each day meditating. Concentrate on a single point of focus, like your breath, a mantra, or an object. This can strengthen your ability to ignore distractions.
      3. Pomodoro Technique: Divide your work into intervals of focused work (around 25 minutes) followed by a short break (around 5 minutes). After four intervals, take a longer break. This technique can help you maintain concentration in short bursts.
      4. Visualization: Picture yourself accomplishing your tasks successfully. This exercise can improve your mental clarity and help you remain engaged with your goals.

These exercises can gradually enhance your focus and concentration over time.

Why Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Guinea were absent at ECOWAS military chiefs meeting in Accra

Some member states of the Economic Community of West African States ( ECOWAS) did not attend the ECOWAS military chiefs meeting held in Accra, which started on Thursday, August 16, 2023.

The meeting was a follow-up to the directive of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government at its Extraordinary Summit on the political situation in Niger held on August 10, 2023 in Abuja, Nigeria. The ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff (CCDS) was tasked to activate the ECOWAS Standby Force for the restoration of constitutional order in Niger.

The CCDS had an extraordinary meeting in Accra, Ghana from August 17 to 18, 2023 to finalise plans for the deployment of the Standby Force.

Addressing the gathering on the first day of the meeting, Minister of Defence of Ghana Dominic Nitiwul explained that some countries, including Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Guinea, were absent due to the sanctions imposed on them.

“Four of our member states [Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Guinea] are now facing sanctions for resorting to unconstitutional change of government which contradicts the ECOWAS protocol on good governance and democracy,” he said.

According to ECOWAS, these countries have been suspended from its bodies and have faced economic and financial sanctions after their respective military coups that ousted their elected leaders. Mali underwent two coups in August 2020 and May 2021, followed by Guinea in September 2021 and Burkina Faso in January 2023.

ECOWAS has been keen to limit political instability in the region and has urged the military juntas to shorten their transition periods and return to civilian rule.

Also, Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde were also present. According to the Minister, they had “genuine reasons” for their absence.

Malaysia air crash: Deaths feared after plane strikes highway

A private jet that was trying to land in Malaysia collided with a road, perhaps killing several persons.

Police informed Reuters and AFP that when the jet struck Guthrie Highway close to Elmina, eight persons on board as well as two drivers all perished.

CAAM, the aviation regulator, would not, however, confirm the fee.

The Beechcraft Model 390 aircraft, which was flying from Langkawi to Selangor, collided with the highway while trying to land.

According to Selangor Police Chief Hussein Omar Khan, the plane crashed on the highway as it was about to arrive at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Selangor after losing communication with the air traffic control tower.

“There was no emergency call, and the aircraft had been given clearance to land,” he continued.

He noted that a search and rescue operation was underway.

The 6th Volta Trade and Investment Fair inaugurated

The sixth edition of the Volta Trade and Investment Fair has been launched by the Volta Regional Coordinating Council in collaboration with the Association of Ghana Industries.

The Fair is themed “Leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area for Economic Development”.

The highly anticipated Fair, scheduled to take place from November 26 through December 10, 2023, will be held at the Ho Sports Stadium.

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, stated during the launch in Ho that the Fair aims to promote industrialization with a purpose of fostering the region’s private sector, which he described as the hub of the local economic development.

According to him, this could be done by creating a thriving local economy, which would then lead to the growth of the area and effective citizen participation.

“Industrial growth can only occur within a growing economy. We can only grow competitive industries when our economies are on the producing end and not on the receiving end”, he said.

“As an entrepreneur, I have personally tried it and I can assure you, it works”, he stressed.

However, he advised Ghanaian companies to prioritise value addition to bring their goods on par with those of their foreign competitors on the international market.

The 6th Volta Trade and Investment Fair’s theme was praised by His Excellency Eliphas Barine, the Kenyan High Commissioner to Ghana, for being in line with the objectives of the African Union.

The Volta Region has the potential to gain enormously from the African Continental Free Trade Area initiative, according to the UNDP Resident Representative, Her Excellency Dr. Angela Lusigi.

“This region is endowed with a rich tapestry of resources, from agricultural products to tourism, and has the potential to emerge as a key player in the African trade landscape. With its fertile lands, picturesque landscapes, growing manufacturing base, vibrant young entrepreneurs, and flourishing tourism sector, the Volta region has much to offer.

The region is in a favorable position to contribute significantly to Ghana’s export portfolio within the AfCFTA framework. For instance, the Volta region’s traditional industries, such as handicrafts and textiles, can be revitalized and integrated into the broader trade framework. This will not only preserve cultural heritage but also empower local communities and generate income”, she said.

She entreated local businesses to tap into the expanded AfCFTA market to reach larger markets on the continent to increase their trades and profit margins.

She however, explained that this can only be achieved with strategic planning, infrastructure development, and capacity building, hence entreating stakeholders “to invest in modernizing the region’s transportation networks, energy systems, and digital infrastructure to seamlessly connect with other African markets”.

The Volta and Oti Regional Chairman of the Association of Ghana Industries, Dela Gadzanku, disclosed that activities lined up for the Fair included the 2nd Volta Youth Summit, Maiden Volta Women Entrepreneurs Summit, Sports Investment Summit, Sports Heroes Award, Creative Arts Summit,AfCFTA Youth Innovation Contest, Volta Tours, Volta Bear Festival, and Round table meeting on the automotive policy

He hinted at some new additions to the annual fair, which are the creation of AfCFTA Village for exhibitors from other African countries and cultural nights for participating countries to showcase their valuable cultures and traditions.

“Togbe chairman, the stage is set for participants to explore uncharted territories, forge new partnerships, and pioneer groundbreaking initiatives”, he added.

The 6th Volta Trade and Investment Fair would provide a platform to promote goods, services, arts, culture, and tradition.

It is expected to attract about four hundred indigenous exhibitors and foreign companies.

    25. Dwight Yorke instructs Harry Maguire to leave after Erik ten Hag humiliated

Dwight Yorke instructs Harry Maguire to leave after Erik ten Hag humiliated

Harry Maguire has been ‘humiliated’ by his manager Erik ten Hag, according to Dwight Yorke, who has urged him to leave Manchester United.

The 18-month ordeal for the England international ended in his being relieved of his duties as United captain earlier this summer.

Maguire started the new campaign on the sidelines as Ten Hag’s team struggled to a lucky 1-0 victory over Wolves at Old Trafford.

The manager of United chose to open the second half with Victor Lindelof rather than bringing on Harry Maguire at halftime despite taking Lisandro Martinez off.

Maguire had been in discussions to join West Ham, but the agreement fell through because he couldn’t reach a personal understanding.

Ten Hag is believed to be pleased to keep Maguire on board because he sees him as the ideal team member, but former United striker Yorke thinks the 30-year-old should look for a new challenge.

In light of the manager’s public comments on Harry Maguire fighting for his spot, York told OLBG, “I don’t think Harry Maguire will be an option for squad depth now.”

His confidence will be down after losing his captaincy, therefore he needs to focus on being the best in his position at the club.

Imagine how your confidence would be affected if Luke Shaw started in your position while you were still on the bench.

Maguire may have a different opinion, and that’s his right, but in my opinion, Maguire leaving Manchester United is a no-brainer. His standing in the locker room would have suffered, and he would have felt ashamed of what had happened in recent weeks.

If Jonny Evans signs a one-year deal, it will be clear what Erik ten Hag’s plans are with regard to Maguire.

    27. Over 100 people arrested as result of church fires in Pakistan

Over 100 people arrested as result of church fires in Pakistan

In an east Pakistani city, more than 100 people have been detained after tens of thousands of Muslims destroyed homes and set fire to churches.

The allegations that two Christian men had torn pages from the Quran were what started the violence in Jaranwala.

One day after the violence, on Thursday, the historic Salvation Army Church was still engulfed in flames.

The atmosphere is still tense, therefore barbed wire has been installed around the ruins.

Additionally, public gatherings have been prohibited for seven days in Jaranwala’s Faisalabad area.

The two men have been charged with blasphemy, which carries a death sentence in Pakistan, but they haven’t been detained despite being accused of destroying the Quran, the sacred book of Islam.

Even though no one has yet been executed in Pakistan for blasphemy, even the mere accusation can spark large-scale protests that culminate in lynchings and murders.

A man from Sri Lanka was slain and his body was burnt on fire two years ago after he was accused of blasphemy. Six persons were killed and over 60 homes were destroyed by a mob in Punjab’s Gorja area in 2009 after they were accused of disrespecting Islam.

In the nineteenth century, Pakistan took up the British blasphemy law. Islamabad enacted harsher punishments in the 1980s, including the death penalty for insulting Islam.

The majority of people in Pakistan are Muslims—about 96%. Other nations, such as Iran, Brunei, and Mauritania, also execute people for defaming a religion.

Since Pakistan made blasphemy a capital offence, there has been an increase in religious-motivated violence since it “bolsters violent behaviour,” according to Iftekharul Bashar, a researcher at the think tank RSIS who studies political and religious violence in South Asia.

According to Mr. Bashar, “widening economic disparities have caused Pakistani society to become more fragmented, which has resulted in an increase in violence against minority religious groups.”

“The emergence of vigilante and extremist factions within Pakistan, some of which exhibit significant financial backing, also contributed to this trouble trend,” he continued.

According to a local official who spoke to BBC Urdu, after news of the two men reportedly profaning the Quran, the holy book of Islam, went viral on social media early on Wednesday morning, officials began receiving calls about protests and fires.

Authorities reported that they discovered shredded pages of the holy book close to a Christian community that had blasphemous writing on them in red marker.

The reports went viral on social media and in the city, upsetting the Muslim population. Mobs attacked and pillaged Christian homeowners’ homes during the ensuing bloodshed.

The Christian’s belongings were dragged into the streets and burned on fire, according to the police, who spoke to the BBC.

Christian Yassir Bhatti, age 31, was one of many who had to leave their houses.

He told the AFP news agency, “They broke the windows and doors and took out refrigerators, sofas, chairs, and other household objects to pile them up in front of the Church to be burned.

“They were ruthless; they burned and desecrated Bibles as well.”

Social media videos show demonstrators demolishing Christian structures as it appears that cops are looking on.

The alleged blasphemy was denounced by Punjab province’s communications minister, Amir Mir, who also said that thousands of police officers had been dispatched to the scene and that dozens of people had been detained.

A government source told Reuters that the majority of the mob’s members were from the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), an Islamist political organisation. The TLP has denied being concerned.

Anwar ul-Haq Kakar, the acting prime minister, urged prompt prosecution of the violent offenders.

In the adjoining city of Lahore, Pakistani Bishop Azad Marshall expressed that the events had left the Christian community “deeply pained and distressed.”

“We cry out for justice and action from law enforcement and those who dispense justice, and the safety of all citizens to intervene immediately and assure us that our lives are valuable in our own homeland,” he wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

    28. Forestry commission staff shot in the head, back by illegal miners

Forestry commission staff shot in the head, back by illegal miners

Unidentified illegal miners have shot a member of the Rapid Response Unit (RRU) of the Forestry Commission (FC), John Baba Konlan in the head and back in the Cape 3 Points Forest Reserve in the Western Region.

According to information from the Forest Services Division’s Takoradi Forest District Office, there were some illegal miners working in the Reserve at a location close to the Morrison Community.

Nine staff members, including members of the Rapid Response Unit and Forest Guards, were quickly sent to the location to verify the accuracy of the information.

After arriving in the Reserve, three members were left in the operation vehicle while the other nine continued their hour-long walk through the forest to the illegal mining site.

The team members saw a dugout pit with illegal miners working diligently at “dig and wash” from a distance.

The team members decided to take different paths in order to be able to surround and capture the illegal miners.

A team member claimed that a few minutes after they had arrived at the pit via their individual routes, he heard gunshots and immediately became alert, scanning the area for any indication of danger.

As he moved forward, he noticed the illegal miners leaving their working tools behind and running into the forest.

After a short while, he claimed, he heard one of his team members screaming and pleading with the others to help Mr. Konlan, who had been shot, because they were all needed.

As a result, the Team cancelled the entire exercise, carried Mr. Konlan back to where their car was parked for more than an hour through the forest while he was throwing up blood.

They transported him to the Western Region’s Effia Nkwanta Government Hospital. He was sent to the Cape Coast Regional Medical Centre for additional care.

He was then sent on to the University of Ghana Medical Centre in Accra, where he was initially admitted but later released and asked to come in for a review in the following two weeks.

A CT Scan carried out on Mr Konlan indicated, among others, that a “Non-contrast serial axial CT scan of the head with bone windows shows multiple metallic bullets, one located in the left temporoparietal, went through the bone into the brain from the left temporal and parietal to the left occipital and into the right lobes”.

“There are other bullets that did not enter the brain or fracture any bone; 2 are left in the left frontal scalp, one in the left parietal at the vertex, multiple lodged close to the angle of the left mandible, and one in the soft tissue of the right neck”.

Since the case was brought to the Takoradi Central Police Station’s attention, no arrests have been made.

The Rapid Response Team’s employees have recently come under severe attack from illegal loggers.

This is the second incident to occur in the past six weeks; the first was the abduction of Mr. Vitus Yourdong in the Asukese Forest Reserve in the Bono Region.

He was a member of a Rapid Response Team sent into the Reserve to apprehend unauthorised chainsaw users.

He was kidnapped, held captive for more than two weeks, and then dumped at a landfill in the Eastern Region at Nkwakaw- Asona.

Kenyan Senator Accused of Scholarship Fraud Released on Bail

A senator and two former county officials connected to a scholarship controversy have been released on bail by a Kenyan high court.

The three were detained on Wednesday on suspicion of conspiring to steal approximately 1.1 billion Kenyan shillings ($7.6 million; £5.9 million), which were intended to pay for Kenyan students’ continued study in Finland and Canada.

The senator and his accomplice are anticipated to be charged with 11 offences. The senator has already refuted claims that he stole the funds.

US worried about ‘worsening violence’ in Mali

In light of attacks on UN forces, the United States has expressed alarm about the possibility of Mali’s conflict escalating.

The attacks were “unacceptable,” according to State Department spokesman Matthew Miller, who also denounced “such violence and the greater threat posed by armed actors operating” there.

The UN peacekeeping operation in Mali, Minusma, announced on Monday that deteriorating security had compelled them to leave the northern town of Ber earlier than usual.

It claimed that two attacks on its retreating forces resulted in some of the soldiers being hurt.

According to the US State Department, the attacks show how dangerous escalating violence is and how crucial it is for all Malian parties to resolve their issues amicably.

It continues, “We call on the transition administration to cooperate completely until the final Minusma element departs. It is essential that Minusma be permitted to undertake its departure in a secure and orderly way.

DR Congo’s parliament votes to end military rule in the east

The majority of attendees at a three-day meeting in the parliament of the Democratic Republic of Congo have decided to end military control in two eastern provinces that have been severely impacted by long-running insecurity.

In order to combat armed groups operating in the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu, the central government imposed the state of siege in May 2021, replacing civil rule with military control.

However, Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ report to the UN Security Council last week stated that the situation in the two provinces, where about four million people have been evacuated, has gotten worse.

“The siege situation provided us nothing…The populace is sick of it. Let the civilians regain control,” Béatrice Nyiramugeyo, a member of parliament who attended the conference, told the BBC Great Lakes.

According to MP Fabrice Adenonga, 195 of the 196 attendees of the consultative conference that ended on Wednesday voted in favour of lifting the state of siege, according to UN-backed Radio Okapi.

President Félix Tshisekedi must now “eventually react” to the situation, according to government spokesman Patrick Muyaya, who spoke at a press conference in Kinshasa.

Madonna reschedules tour dates due to health scare

Celebrated singer Madonna has rescheduled the “Celebration Tour” dates she postponed following a health scare at her home in New York in June.

The pop icon was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) due to a bacterial infection and later released to continue her recovery at home.

The launch of Madonna’s tour, which was supposed to start in July, had been postponed, according to her longtime manager Guy Oseary.

Live Nation revealed on Tuesday that the rescheduled dates for North America will follow the previously disclosed dates for the UK and Europe. Tickets for the shows that were previously planned will be honoured on the new dates. There will be a few cancellations due to scheduling issues.

“Madonna regrets the inconvenience to fans and hopes to make it up to those markets in the future,” Live Nation said in a statement Tuesday.

Cancelled shows include July 27 in Tulsa, Dec. 22 in Nashville, Jan. 15 in San Francisco, Jan. 18 in Las Vegas, and Jan. 20 in Phoenix. Those ticket buyers will get refunded.

Four sold-out shows in London in October will serve as the tour’s official debut, and from there, performances will take place in Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands for the remainder of 2023.

The North American leg begins on December 13 at Barclays Centre in Brooklyn.

    35. Auditor-General grilled on explanation for GHc52.5bn transfer to unidentified account in 2020

Auditor-General grilled on explanation for GHc52.5bn transfer to unidentified account in 2020

A former President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation Ghana and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana, Mike Kofi Afflu, has formally requested the Public Accounts Committee to investigate the transfer of GHC52.5 billion to an undisclosed account in the year 2020.

He indicated that in correspondence dated October 5, 2020, the Audit Service addressed the Managing Director of GCB Bank Plc. Within the letter, the Auditor-General requested the bank’s clarification regarding the rationale behind a transfer of GHC52.5 billion from the bank to an unidentified account.

In a petition dated, August 11, 2023, and addressed to the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament and copied to GhanaWeb Business, he stated that “Since then, the Auditor-General has not provided any explanation to the Ghanaian.

      Taxpayer to explain:

      l. Where the money was transferred to?

      2. Who authorized that amount to be transferred by the bank?

      3. Into what account was the money transferred?

      4. Details of the recipient account and any related issues?”

Part of Afflu’s concerns include the fact the USD GHS average rate for October 2020 was 5.77522.

The amount of GH¢52.5 million was, therefore, equivalent to US$9,090,783 (i.e., $9.1 billion).

According to him, “If this GH¢52.5 billion (from GRA Account) had been transferred to the Bank of Ghana as mandated by Law, Ghana would not have gone to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the bailout of $3 billion.”

“I am therefore requesting the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament of which you are the Chairman, to invite the Auditor-General of Ghana to provide the necessary explanation to your committee and Ghanaians as a whole,” the petition noted.

“We want to know who withdrew that amount of money from the GCB Bank Plc and for what,” he concluded.

    36. Armando Broja’s transfer request from former manager Jose Mourinho rejected by Chelsea

Armando Broja’s transfer request from former manager Jose Mourinho rejected by Chelsea

Armando Broja’s loan from Chelsea to Roma has been discussed, but the Blues are unwilling to let the striker leave the team.

The 21-year-old has been sidelined since the end of 2022 due to a major knee injury, but he is very close to finishing his recovery and could return to the field by next month.

It is a little surprising that Roma would want to sign him to a short-term contract given how long he has been sidelined and how unfit he still is, but according to Sky Sports, the Italians have spoken to the Blues about the potential of taking the Albanian on loan.

Chelsea, however, has rejected the Serie A team’s request to sign Broja, especially in light of Christopher Nkunku’s recent significant knee injury, which could keep him out until December.

AC Milan has also expressed interest in the teenage forward, but should they make a bid for him, they will face the same opposition as Roma.

With summer acquisition Nicolas Jackson starting the opening Premier League match of the year as Chelsea drew 1-1 with Liverpool, new Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino does not have an abundance of options for the central striker position.

While Pochettino has access to other forwards, they are either more at home out wide or deeper, while Romelu Lukaku is still with the team but is anticipated to leave before the transfer window shuts.

Jackson looked energetic throughout the entire game against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, but he missed one very fine opportunity.

Keke Palmer and boyfriend Darius Jackson reportedly break up after he publicly shamed her

Keke Palmer and her boyfriend, Darius Jackson, have reportedly broken up after two years of dating.

The news comes after Jackson publicly shamed Palmer, 29, in July for wearing a sexy outfit to an Usher concert.

So, last month, Darius the father of Keke’s child, as well as her boyfriend, publicly shamed the multi-hyphenate for an outfit she wore to one of Usher’s Las Vegas shows.

Jackson raised eyebrows when he subsequently took to Twitter to offer his opinion on his then-girlfriend’s sheer black ensemble.

“It’s the outfit tho.. you a mom,” he tweeted.

Following his tweet, he received a lot of backlash from netizens.

But in response, Keke shared a video with their child, Leodis, with the following caption: “One thing is certain and one thing is true, IM A MOTHA, through and through!” She later revealed merch(!) that flipped Darius’s ugly behavior right on its head.

Since then, reports indicate that they’ve both unfollowed each other on Instagram, and Darius basically (and, let it be said, wisely) disappeared from social media entirely.

The couple really hasn’t been photographed at all since the whole dust-up began — and according to People, it sounds like it’s going to stay that way.

When it comes to Darius’s status in his relationship with Keke, a source tells the magazine that “he is moved on,” but they are still co-parenting and, in the words of People, “making it work.”

To cut a long story short, it appears that their romantic relationship is over.

    40. Manchester United claims decision not yet made on Mason Greenwood

Manchester United claims decision not yet made on Mason Greenwood

Mason Greenwood‘s future has not been decided, according to Manchester United.

Due to claims involving a young woman after pictures and videos were shared online, the 21-year-old has been suspended by his club for the past 18 months.

Prior to the Crown Prosecution Service’s announcement six months ago that the case had been dropped, Greenwood was facing accusations that included attempted rape and violence.

During this time, United has kept the forward on suspension while conducting an internal investigation.

The Premier League powerhouses were reportedly ready to reintegrate the 21-year-old earlier this week, but the club has said that is not the case.

After all charges against Mason Greenwood were dropped in February 2023, according to a statement, “Manchester United has thoroughly investigated the allegations made against him.”

We heard from many persons who had a direct role in the case or knowledge of it, and we drew on a wealth of evidence and background information that was not in the public realm.

The club’s enquiries have focused heavily on the welfare and viewpoint of the alleged victim throughout this process, and we respect her right to lifelong anonymity.

We also owe Mason a duty of care because he works for the club, is a young person who has been a member since he was seven, and is a new father with a partner.

We have finished gathering information for our inquiry, and are currently deciding what will happen to Mason.

Contrary to what has been reported in the media, that decision has not yet been reached and is currently the focus of extensive internal discussion. The Chief Executive Officer is ultimately accountable.

Once decided, the internal and external stakeholders of the club will be informed and given an explanation.

“This has been a challenging case for everyone connected to Manchester United, and we appreciate the strong reactions it has sparked based on the limited information that is publicly available.” We kindly ask for your understanding as we complete the last steps of this methodical procedure.

Okudzeto Ablakwa slams BoG for ‘shady and wasteful’ head office project

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has launched a scathing attack on the Bank of Ghana (BoG) for allegedly engaging in a ‘shady and wasteful’ project to construct a new corporate head office.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, the MP said he had intercepted documents from the BoG and other sources that exposed several procurement breaches, cost escalations and lack of transparency in the project.

He claimed that the BoG violated the Public Procurement Act, 2003 as amended in Act 914, by using the restricted tendering method to select five companies to participate in the tender, none of which were registered at the Office of the Registrar of Companies. He said one of the companies, Ronesans Holdings, was not even registered at the time of the tender.

He also claimed that the cost of the project increased astronomically from US$81.8 million to US$121 million within eight months, and was likely to exceed US$250 million. He said this was mind-boggling and unacceptable, especially during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic when the BoG claimed to be struggling to finance the government.

He further claimed that the BoG single-sourced another company, MULTICAD, to carry out project management for US$3.45 million, without any compelling reason or justification. He said this was another breach of the procurement law and a sign of cronyism.

He called on all well-meaning Ghanaians to join him in protesting against the BoG project, which he described as extravagant and wasteful. He said Governor Addison and his colleagues at the BoG had been deliberately lawless and destructive, and should resign or be sacked.

He said he had activated his parliamentary oversight role to unravel the mystery behind the project and expose the truth to the public. He said he would not relent in his efforts to ensure accountability and value for money in public spending.

He attached copies of some of the documents he had intercepted from the BoG and PPA to support his claims. He also urged Ghanaians to share his statement widely and demand answers from the BoG.

    42. Fulham should strive to compete in European football – Bernd Leno

Fulham should strive to compete in European football – Bernd Leno

In addition to joking that Fulham should be seeking to win the Premier League, Bernd Leno is adamant that they should be looking to finish the job and qualify for Europe this season.

A run of eight losses in their last 13 matches in the top division put an end to the Germany goalkeeper’s hopes of qualifying for Europe last season.

Even though their outstanding first season back in the top flight came to an end in tenth place, Marco Silva’s team was at least spared the scrap for relegation.

After the Londoners’ 1-0 victory at Everton on Saturday, Leno thinks they should once again set lofty goals.

When asked about Fulham’s goals for the upcoming season, he said to Metro: “Same as last season – after 20-25 matches we can change the target and say, “We go for Europe or mid-table or whatever” or for the (league) trophy.” No, I’m kidding.

We “only prepare for [the upcoming game] and not what might occur in May of next year.”

Leno asserts that the fact that Fulham managed to keep Manchester City and Manchester United close both at home and away last season should give supporters hope that they can compete with their more seasoned rivals on an equal level.

I think now everyone is aware of our competitiveness. We are capable of competing against the top clubs, especially at home,’ he continued. You can tell that United and City fought against us by looking at them.

‘At the end we lost these games but you saw they were decided by details – in the last minute against United.

‘We know how we can compete against these teams and they also know what they can expect from us so it will be a challenge.’

The Fulham No.1 admits the fact the transfer window remains open, with the likes of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Joao Palhinha attracting attention, ensures the next few weeks will not be easy.

While manager Silva turned down a £40 million offer from Al-Ahli, the Saudi club Al-Hilal wanted striker Mitrovic. Al-Hilal is expected to make a new offer of £47 million. West Ham and Liverpool have both been connected to Palhinha.

Leno said: “Every season you have the same problem.” There might possibly be incomings before this Saturday’s home derby against Brentford. The previous season, I arrived the day before the opening match against Liverpool. I didn’t participate in any friendly or preseason games because I didn’t train much at Arsenal.

“I had no rhythm, so I had to adjust as quickly as possible, but that’s what we do and why we’re professionals,” the speaker said. I don’t worry about it because the team is really easy to adapt to and the fans help players adapt and gain confidence.

Leno was tight with Aaron Ramsdale, who later took over as the Gunners’ custodian after Leno departed the Emirates in quest of regular first-team action.

Ramsdale recently disclosed that his wife lost her unborn child in January. When asked if he had contacted Ramsdale, Leno replied, “No, not yet. He’s a genuinely nice man, and I believe I truly admire him as a person. Even when we were both goalkeepers for Arsenal, our friendship was great.

“I’m going to talk to him soon, and I think it’s great that he speaks so openly about his personal life. I wish him the best in the future.”
