In a significant development for the 13-year-long land dispute over Gomoa Fetteh Land, the Court of Appeal in Accra has issued a ruling in favor of removing the 21st Century Company’s name from the records of the Central Regional Lands Commission. This decision marks a crucial milestone in the resolution of the contentious land litigation.
As per a report from myjoyonline, the legal dispute originated in September 2005 when the Chiefs of Gomoa Fetteh submitted an application to the High Court in Cape Coast. This led to a mandamus order that required the registration of land documents related to the 21st Century Company, its affiliated companies, and their respective customers.
After the Lands Commission’s failure to register the mentioned lands, the chiefs filed a motion alleging contempt of court. This action prompted the parties to engage in negotiations to reach terms of settlement before the court.
Despite the Lands Commission’s publication of a notice in the Daily Graphic on June 18, 2020, announcing its intention to remove the land registration of affected individuals, the chiefs contend that the commission did not take action within the specified 21-day notice period. Consequently, the chiefs decided to once again seek legal recourse to address the matter.
Presided over by Justice Poku-Acheampng, Justice Kyei Baffour, and Justice Archer, the Court of Appeal has now mandated the Lands Commission to delete the land registration related to portions of the Gomoa Fetteh lands.
Nana Abor Atta II, Twafohene of the Gomoa Akyempim Traditional Council and Chief of Gomoa Fetteh, shed light on the origins of the dispute, revealing that in the early 90s, the manager of 21st Century, Kofi Asmah, acquired 3,000 acres of land from the chiefs of Gomoa Fetteh for estate purposes.
However, an error by the Lands Commission led to the registration of over 12,000 acres of land for the company without the chiefs’ knowledge.
Having fought tirelessly in court for the past 13 years, the chiefs of Gomoa Fetteh are hopeful that this ruling will bring about a resolution to the land dispute.
Nana Abor Atta II appealed to the Lands Commission to conduct thorough investigations before registering lands for individuals and estate companies to reduce the prevalence of land litigations in the area.
Nana Kwesi Quansah, Omankrado of Gomoa Fetteh, also called on the Inspector General of Police to address the behavior of certain Ghana Police Service personnel, urging them to refrain from employing a “rambo style of arrest” during their operations.
JoyNews reached out to the management of the 21st Century Company for comments following the press conference, but no response regarding the court’s judgment has since been provided.

Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Adutwum, has appealed to the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) to reconsider its plan to resume their strike action, following government’s failure to implement the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) Arbitral Award Orders and the negotiated conditions of service.
The Minister has urged CETAG to pursue dialogue rather than strike, citing potential Academic Calendar disruption.
In January 2023, CETAG embarked on an indefinite strike action after the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) protracted negotiations for new conditions of service for more than a year.
The strike was however called off following interventions by the National Labour Commission.
A compulsory arbitral order birthed a new condition of service for CETAG agreed by government.
However, in a press release dated Monday, July 10, 2023, CETAG demonstrated that the agreed negotiations between the two parties have not been implemented despite several letters of notice to the Ministry of Finance.
“Following the NLC’s compulsory Arbitral Award, the parties proceeded to sign off the negotiation agreement, which has been communicated to the Ministry of Finance by the FWSC since May 26, 2023, for approval and implementation.
Surprisingly, the MoF has refused to act on FWSC’s letter together with the NLC’s Arbitral ORDERS in spite of letters to the MoF requesting immediate implementation of the negotiated agreements. Practically, CETAG members cannot continue to survive on expired 2020 CoS in this biting economy of Ghana,” the statement read.
CETAG, therefore, said it will be forced to lay down tools by end of July if government fails to honour its part of the negotiation.
Additionally, it will not continue with the all-year-round academic calendar for 2023/2024 year.
However, the Minister of Education has appealed to CETAG in a speech read on his behalf by Mr. Yayara Dzakadzi, Director of Tertiary Education at the Ministry during the 13th congregation by SDA College of Education in Koforidua.
“Mr. Chairman I wish to use this platform to appeal to the colleges of education teachers association of Ghana to engage the ministry further on the implementation of the negotiated allowances for its members rather on going on strike which will end up disrupting the academic calendar,” he pleaded.
Book and Research Allowance
The Education Minister announced Government has processed an amount of over 32 million Ghana Cedis for the first batch of book and research allowance payable to eligible Senior Members of Public Tertiary Institutions across the country.
He further stated that the government is indeed leaving no stone unturned in ensuring the smooth operations of the Colleges of Education in the Country to prepare them for brighter future.
In light of this, government has released an amount of 241,913,000 Ghana Cedis for the payment of trainees allowance in the Country.
The Minister also said some Colleges of Education have qualified to be converted into full-fledged universities in the coming months.
Ghanaian YouTuber Kwadwo Sheldon has talked about how challenging it was for him to debate Shatta Wale on social media.
He explained how he became upset when Shatta Wale warned him not to use his content again in an interview with Showbiz A-Z on Joy FM.
“Your man says in his song he is a gangster, then he goes ahead to call the police into an online beef.
I basically used his own tweet against him and he didn’t understand why some big-headed guy was actually challenging him so he decided to call the IGP. It was that kind of battle because people meet you in town and they reference that,” he told the host Kwame Dadzie.
Talking about what started the beef, Kwadwo noted that “Shatta Wale has the notion that bloggers eat off his hustle. And this is borne out of the fact that a lot of the people in the industry are oblivious of how the ecosystem works. So they go out and throw out anything and their followers buy into it.”
Other people Kwadwo Sheldon has fought with are Teacher Kwadwo, Shatta Wale, Sammy Flex, Afia Schwarzenegger, Kevin Taylor, among others.
Born Bernard Kwadwo Amoafo, Kwadwo Sheldon is a Ghanaian content creator and team lead for Kwadwo Sheldon Studios.
He has won a number of awards including the Avance Media 50 Most Influential Young Ghanaians in 2020 and 2021 for his work in media.
He is known for his ‘Breakdown’ show, ‘Face Off, ‘Yawa of the Day’, among others.
Bessa Simons, the interim president of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), has stated that the Ghanaian music industry needs more qualified talent managers to turn things around.
He emphasised that artiste management was a crucial step that could address issues with the industry’s lack of international recognition and urged creatives to take a keen interest in it.
Comparing the situation to the Nigerian music industry, he was of the firm opinion that the region, when properly explored by creatives, might be the game changer and influence the direction of the industry, just as it has done for Nigeria.
In an interview with the media, he said that artiste managers, who can foster artistes’ creativity and assist build their public image with an eye toward current trends in the industry, are crucial to the success of the sector
“The artiste management sector has not been fully explored, and we need to make conscious efforts to change that direction in order to enjoy its full benefits for both the industry and ourselves as individuals. Artiste managers support an artiste’s creative development and are able to assist them in making a number of musical and professional decisions.”
“We are aware branding and marketing play a significant role in an artiste’s success. A skilful manager can assist in shaping a musician’s public persona while keeping an eye on current musical trends. Artiste managers create teams to assist them in managing funds and keeping tours and productions under budget.”
“Artiste managers are ideal for this because musicians rarely have the business sense or desire to manage every aspect of their finances. While this aims to aid the artistes, it also directly impacts our industry because it is beneficial when the artistes are well-built and managed for international exploits,” he told Graphic Showbiz.
Aside from the obvious advantages, Bessa Simons urged individuals to make the effort to get into the artiste management space, emphasising that it was also a lucrative business opportunity.
“We would go on and on with a long list of names from both within and outside of Africa of artiste managers who are benefiting greatly from the initiatives.
“Simply put, we must make conscious efforts to explore that space too. If we go into this space with all honesty and remain dedicated to it, it can be a multi-million venture we won’t regret giving a try”, he added.

During his appearance on The Delay Show, the young man, alongside his colleagues, openly shared his admiration for Kuami Eugene. He revealed that he had been receiving persistent advances from women, despite repeatedly clarifying that he is not Kuami Eugene. These admirers seemed undeterred by the clarification and continued to express their interest.
“The ladies have been pestering me,” said Stephen. “They think I’m Kuami Eugene. Even when I tell them I’m not, they refuse to back out. They pester me a lot. Some even buy things like shoes and apparel for me in their bid to win my heart.”
His response triggered a question from the show host: “So, you’ve not even taken advantage of that to sleep with even one of them?”
“Sorry?” he said as he pretended not to have heard the question, making Delay repeat the question. “So, you’ve not even taken advantage of that to sleep with even one person?”
“As in having sexual intercourse with people?” Stephen sought clarity.
“Yes,” Delay responded.
“I’ve not been sleeping with people,” he said but fumbled and burst into laughter, causing hilarity among his peers. “I’ve not been sleeping around; maybe there’s been sexual intercourse. It’s different from promiscuity; I’ve not been sleeping with many people.”
Stephen refuted claims that he is injuring the Kuami Eugene brand, stressing that he has rather promoted the musician and his craft.
He said: “I like Kuami Eugene. I love him. I’m a die-hard fan. He has other lookalikes but I’m the original one; even Kuami knows. I don’t study him but if he releases a song today, I’ll be able to sing word for word. I used his name to push him. All my videos on Tiktok have songs by Kuami Eugene.
Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr Clement Apaak, has called on the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Dame to initiate legal proceedings against Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng.
Following a recent Facebook post by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, it was stated that the application filed by Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng and Kwabena Adu Gyamfi to restrict him has been rejected by the Human Rights Court.
As per his statement, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa highlighted that the court’s ruling clearly stated that his parliamentary oversight had revealed two separate behaviors that could be considered criminal. Consequently, the court dismissed the application due to the lack of legal capacity and standing.
Furthermore, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa mentioned that the judge imposed a penalty of GHC10,000.00 against Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng and Kwabena Adu Gyamfi, noting that this is the second instance where a cost has been awarded against them.
In response to this development, the Member of Parliament for Builsa South expressed that Rev. Kusi Boateng is not exempt from the laws of the country. He urged the Attorney General to commence legal proceedings against Rev. Kusi Boateng.
“How did such a character become Sec and Board of Trustee of a National Cathedral? How many more criminals are walking freely in the Presidency? The Presidency has been so, so, so DEPRAVED! The AG must prosecute him immediately, he is not above the law!” Dr. Apaak stated.
Below is the full statement by Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa
The Human Rights Court has today dismissed Rev Victor Kusi Boateng/Kwabena Adu Gyamfi’s application which sought to restrain me.
The court’s judgment was emphatic that my parliamentary oversight had unraveled two distinct identities in conduct which borders on criminality and therefore the application was dismissed for lack of capacity and locus standi.
The judge awarded the cost of GHS10,000.00 against Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng/Kwabena Adu Gyamfi. This is the second time the cost has been awarded against Kusi Boateng/Adu Gyamfi.
I dedicate this latest legal victory to the masses who have kept me resolute with their prayers and support for transparent and accountable governance.
I am indebted to my outstanding legal team.
2 down; 1 more to go in his defamation suit.
For God and Country.
Ghana First ????????
Summary of Judgment
It has been proven that Kwabena Adu Gyamfi and Victor Kusi Boateng are two separate identities concurrently used by the Applicant and 1st Respondent is justified in his claims that, Victor Kusi Boateng is not an alias but another separate identity altogether.
The way the two identities were used does not suggest a simple case of two different names, but rather two independent and totally separate identities to conceal applicant’s dealings in a manner that was not obvious, until the investigations and publications of 1st Respondent.
Applicant’s assertion that the use of two names in the manner he has done is not a crime under our laws is misconceived, as the two identities were used in a pattern of duplicity depicting a lack of transparency, and this conduct borders on criminality.
The Application was sought to be enforced under Article 33(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires an Applicant’s personal interest in the matter to confer locus standi.
From the record, it is not clear which of the two separate identities seeks to enforce its fundamental human rights by this suit. And once there is a clear case of double identity presented and proven before this court, this Application is dismissed for lack of capacity and locus standi.
Costs of GHC10,000 awarded against the Applicant in favour of the 1st Respondent.

Founder and leader of Ghana’s Liberal Party, Percival Kofi Akpaloo, has accused persons supporting the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill of inadvertently encouraging the engagement of the queer community.
The politician elaborated that Sam Nartey George, one of the key supporters of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Cultural Values Bill, is employing a reverse psychology approach to persuade Ghanaians into thinking that the advocates are opposed to the LGBTQ+ community.
During an interview with Johnnie Hughes on 3FM Sunrise, Kofi Akpaloo claimed that the eight supporters of the anti-gay bill have been compromised with financial incentives to advance the activities of the LGBTQ+ community.
“They take money to come and promote something but to you, they start it from the opposite and when you look at it you say oh, these people are working for us. They are not working for you, they are rather promoting this,” he told Johnnie Hughes.
When questioned by Johnnie Hughes regarding whether Sam George, Ntim Fordjour, and other advocates of the anti-gay bill have received monetary compensation to promote the appeal of LGBTQ+ activities, Kofi Akpaloo confirmed their involvement in accepting such funds.
Additionally, the politician mentioned a billboard promoting LGBTQ+ tolerance that was installed along the Tema Motorway in June 2022, as well as Sam George’s response to it.
He stated that Sam George’s action of sharing a picture of the billboard on social media promoted the LGBTQ+ community more than it had ever been in Ghana.
“Let me tell you. When a gentleman went to Tema Motorway and then he said to him, I didn’t see anything because I have been driving on that stretch. But he said, oh, they erected some billboard and then he took a picture and posted it on the internet and it went viral. So, who is promoting what? Are you okay? He could have brought the thing down. If you think you hate it, you could have brought the thing down.
“Maybe, you even erected it and then you went there because we didn’t know who erected it. So, you did it and you took a picture and made noise out of it. Such that you see, people didn’t even know the colours of the LGBTQ. Are you okay? People didn’t even know the colours but the mere fact that you picked the picture and you started sharing them, who is promoting what?” he quizzed.
Akpaloo in the same vein concurred with Johnnie Hughes’s analysis of the anti-gay sponsors using reverse psychology on Ghanaians saying “Exactly! Fantastic! You have given me the right word. …My brother, I don’t want to use some words but the thing is that we need to open our minds big, you know, sometimes, people play on our minds. You know, if you are there, you might think the person is fighting for you but it is the other way round.”

Kai Havertz was dubbed a “very good signing” by Aaron Ramsdale, who also praised the German’s “striking” array of abilities while playing for Chelsea.
After signing a £65 million contract with Arsenal, Havertz has moved from Stamford Bridge to the Emirates Stadium.
The 24-year-old, who spent three years at Chelsea and scored the winner in the 2021 Champions League final, has signed a five-year contract at Arsenal.
Despite his Champions League final heroics, Havertz endured a underwhelming spell in west London, scoring 19 goals in 91 Premier League appearances following a £72m move from Bayer Leverkusen.
Assessing Arsenal’s deal for Havertz, Ramsdale told Kicker: ‘It’s a very good signing.
‘Kai already has a lot of experience, he was captain in Leverkusen when he was very young. He’s an international player, has won the Champions League and scored in important games.
‘He can play in different positions, which will help the team. He’s also a tall boy, so he can also help with set-piece situations, which shouldn’t be underestimated in modern football.’

Asked what he made of Havertz during his spell at Chelsea, England goalkeeper Ramsdale added: ‘Above all, it was striking how different he can play. He’s so good with the ball at his feet but at the same time he can be a target player.
‘As his opponent, you could never really rest against him because he is constantly looking for free space.
‘Also, he’s very generous on the ball and likes to use the wingers or players who move up from midfield. Hopefully we will see all of these qualities next season.’
Havertz joins an Arsenal team that finished second in the Premier League last season and qualified for the Champions League following a six-year absence.
The Gunners were chasing a first league title since 2004 but fell short as Manchester City won the Premier League for the third year in a row.
‘We were so close but just didn’t make it in the end,’ Ramsdale said of Arsenal’s title challenge. ‘But now we have experience of being in that kind of situation and hopefully we’ll go one better next season.
‘We’re looking to strengthen the squad once again with a view to attacking all competitions, including the Champions League.
‘It’s difficult when you’re up against a team that wins the treble. But we can only look at ourselves.
‘There were a few games that slipped out of our hands that we should have won. But you never win on the first try.’
The bodies of a man and a woman were discovered at a shooting school, prompting the opening of a murder investigation.
At around 3.40 pm on Friday, Humberside Police were called to the White Lodge Shooting School on College Road close to Thornton Curtis.
Officers were alerted to reports of potential danger.
Man and lady were found dead at the site when they arrived.
Senior investigating officer Chief Inspector Al Curtis said: ‘Inquiries are in the very early stages to establish the circumstances of the man and woman’s death.
‘A homicide investigation has commenced, and both deaths are being treated as suspicious at this time until we establish the facts.
‘We can confirm we are not looking for any else in relation to this inquiry.
‘A scene guard will be in place while we carry out our investigation, and residents will likely observe an increased policing presence in the area as we carry out all lines of inquiry.’
He said next of kin of both victims have been notified and are being supported.
Several police vehicles were seen in the grounds and a tent was erected as forensic teams scoured the areas and inside the main building.
The lane leading down to White Lodge was also cordoned off with police guarding the entrance.
A coastguard helicopter also circled the area.
‘We would like to reassure local residents there is no risk to the wider public and that we will be conducting house-to-house visits to provide reassurance,’ Mr Curtis added.
White Lodge Shooting School is located near the medieval ruins of Thornton Abbey in North Lincolnshire and eight miles south of the Humber Bridge.
In an incident that destroyed the main bridge connecting Crimea to Russia‘s mainland, the Ukrainian Security Service apparently claimed responsibility.
Early this morning, after what they called a “emergency,” officials shuttered the 12-mile (19-km) bridge.
At the eastern end of the Kerch Bridge in the Krasnodar area, the health ministry reported two fatalities on the bridge, along with a daughter who was also hurt.
Sources told BBC Russian and Ukrainian news site censor.net that the attack was carried out as a ‘special operation’ by Ukraine’s naval forces and Security Service.
Separately, the Russian-installed head of the Crimean parliament Vladimir Konstantinov also said Ukraine was responsible, blaming it on the ‘terrorist regime in Kyiv’.
The incident prompted immediate speculation on messaging app Telegram, with pro-Kremlin channel Readovka suggesting ‘a missile attack was carried out on the Crimean bridge, as a result of which the 145th support pillar collapsed’.
There has been no confirmation that any of the 600 pillars on the bridge have collapsed, and Russia’s transport ministry said only the road surface was affected.
A video believed to be filmed this morning shows a large gap between sections of road.
Governor Sergei Aksyonov said he expected rail traffic on the bridge to resume within a matter of hours, though no such assurances were given for road traffic.

On Telegram, he wrote: ‘An emergency occurred in the area of the 145th support from the [Russian side of the bridge].
‘Measures are being taken to restore the situation. I ask residents and guests of the peninsula to refrain from traveling through the Crimean bridge and, for security reasons, choose an alternative land route through new regions.’
The Kerch Bridge is a vital supply route for the war in Ukraine, providing rail and road links to the rest of Russia through the region it annexed in 2014.
Opened in 2018, it has been described as Vladimir Putin’s flagship infrastructure project and a major feat of engineering.
It was damaged in October by a truck bomb on its roadway, and only fully reopened in February.
Several question remain about who carried out last year’s attack and how, but it was celebrated by the Ukrainian government and the country’s postal service released a stamp to commemorate the event.
Oleksiy Danilov, who leads Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, posted a video of Marilyn Monroe singing ‘Happy Birthday, Mr President’ alongside a clip of the explosion, which happened the day after Putin turned 70.
It follows high-profile signings like Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber for the North London club this summer’s transfer window.
The deal also eclipses the £72m Arsenal paid for Nicolas Pepe from Lille in 2019, and is also a record transfer fee between two British clubs.
But how does the record fee compare to some of the other record-breaking transfer figures in the Premier League?
Let’s take a look at the other most expensive deals in the league’s history and how the latest fee for Rice compares…
Enzo Fernandez – Benfica to Chelsea, £106.5m
Enzo Fernandez was signed by Chelsea from Benfica in the last transfer window, and the £106.5m transfer fee made Fernandez the most expensive player in Premier League history.
Fernandez was the final signing of a wild transfer window for the Blues, which also saw them buy David Datro Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Andrey Santos, Joao Felix (on loan), Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Malo Gusto – but the team still struggled to finish in the top ten last season.
Fernandez has so far only made 18 appearances for the club, and is yet to score for the London side.
Jack Grealish – Aston Villa to Manchester City, £100m
Grealish left boyhood club Aston Villa – who he had been with since the age of six – to link up with the Premier League champions in August 2021.
The England international had a slow start to life in Manchester as he struggled to adjust to the intense tactical demands of Pep Guardiola.
However, Grealish has begun to find his feet this term, and will likely play a crucial part in City’s bid to catch Arsenal at the top of the Premier League summit.
Romelu Lukaku – Inter Milan to Chelsea, £97.5m
Lukaku returned to Chelsea seven years after leaving west London, with the Blues paying just shy of £100m in August 2021 following his goalscoring exploits in Italian football in previous years.
However, the Belgian striker’s second stint at Chelsea quickly turned sour, with injury struggles and a dip in form seeing him lose his spot in the starting XI.
And after criticising then-manager Thomas Tuchel in an interview midway through the season in which he also said he wished he stayed at Inter, Lukaku duly returned to San Siro on loan after just one season with Chelsea.
Paul Pogba – Juventus to Manchester United, £93.25m
United completed the blockbuster signing of Pogba from Juventus in August 2016, with the Frenchman returning to the club he first joined as an academy player in 2009.
However, Pogba failed to live up the lofty expectations of his price tag, struggling for consistency as the club became unsettled on and off the pitch.
His six year spell at Old Trafford came to an end in 2022, sealing a return back to Juventus on a free transfer.
Mykhailo Mudryk – Shakhtar Donetsk to Chelsea, £88.5m
The Ukrainian international was at the centre of a dramatic transfer saga involving Chelsea and Arsenal in the January 2023 window.
Arsenal had been in pole position to sign him all month, but were pipped to the deal at the eleventh hour when Chelsea transfer chiefs flew to Poland to sensationally hijack the deal.
It is thought Chelsea offered Mudryk more in wages than the Gunners, as well as offering a more favourable payment structure to Shakhtar Donetsk.
Antony – Ajax to Manchester United, £85m
United completed a deal to bring the Brazilian winger to Manchester in September 2022.
Antony was reunited with manager Erik ten Hag, who coached the 22 year-old during his time in charge of Dutch giants Ajax.
It has been a slow start to Premier League life so far for Antony, but the player still has plenty of time to find his feet and justify his hefty price tag.
The other biggest signings in Premier League history
Harry Maguire – Leicester to Manchester United, £78m
Romelu Lukaku – Everton to Manchester United, £75m
Virgil Van Dijk – Southampton to Liverpool, £75m
Jadon Sancho – Borussia Dortmund to Manchester United, £73m
Kai Havertz – Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea, £72m
Nicolas Pepe – Lille to Arsenal, £72m
Kepa Arrizabalaga – Athletic Bilbao to Chelsea, £71.6m
An agreement was made with Inter on Sunday, according to reports in Italy, and Andre Onana will have a physical with Manchester United within the following 48 hours.
After opting not to extend David de Gea’s contract, United has been looking for a new starting custodian this summer. In recent weeks, United has conducted extensive negotiations with Inter about a trade for Onana.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, United have now agreed a deal worth in excess of €50 million (£42.8m), including bonuses, while personal terms have also been finalised with Onana.
The 27-year-old will now complete his medical with United within the next two days with the aim to join up with Erik ten Hag’s squad on Wednesday where they will travel to the United States for their pre-season tour.
Onana was at Inter’s training ground on Sunday to take part in his final session with the club and say goodbye to his teammates.
Onana, who played under Ten Hag at Ajax, will become United’s second summer signing following their £60m deal for Mason Mount earlier this month.
It’s understood that Ten Hag has already spoken with Onana ahead of his move to Old Trafford.
Once their deal for Onana is complete, United will then focus on bringing in a new striker before the end of the summer window.
Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund is United’s top target but the Serie A club have so far rejected all offers and are demanding an £86m fee.
After defeating Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final on Sunday, Carlos Alcaraz praised the Serbian as “amazing” and “inspirational” and vowed not to lose his All England Club card like Roger Federer once he joins.
Only Boris Becker and Bjorn Borg were younger than 20-year-old Alcaraz when he won his first men’s singles Wimbledon championship.
The Spanish No. 1 player is also the first since Pete Sampras in 1994 to win the Championships title by defeating three players ranked in the top 10 in the world.
Alcaraz, the second player to defeat Djokovic in a five-set Grand Slam final after Andy Murray at the US Open 11 years ago, paid tribute to the 23-time major champion after ending his remarkable 45-match winning run on Centre Court.
‘I have to congratulate Novak, it was amazing to play against him,’ Alcaraz said. ‘You inspire me a lot. I started playing tennis watching you.
‘Since I was born you were already winning tournaments. You said 36 is the new 26 and you make that happen. It’s amazing.’
Alcaraz is the third youngest player in the last 40 years to win 6+ titles in a single season, older only than Andre Agassi in 1988 and Rafael Nadal in 2005.
Speaking more generally about his historic triumph in SW19, Alcaraz added: ‘It’s a dream come true for me. I said before it would be so good to win but even if would have lost I would be really proud of myself.
‘Making history in this beautiful tournament, playing a final against a legend of the sport. It’s a dream come true.
‘It was unbelievable to play in these stages. It’s amazing for a boy – 20 years-old – I didn’t expect to reach this situation really fast. I am really proud of myself, I am really proud for the team and the work we put in every day to be able to lift this.
‘After the first set I thought ‘Carlos, increase the level. Everyone would be disappointed’ – [but] I fall in love with grass right now!
‘It’s amazing. I didn’t expect to play in this level in a really short period.
‘I have played just four tournaments on grass, I won Queen’s.
‘It’s a dream come true. I am happy with the work we were doing, coming into the grass season. I learn really fast and I am really proud.’
Quizzed about becoming a member of the All England Club, Alcaraz said: ‘It’s very special for me. I have to bring the card.
‘I know Roger Federer had trouble getting in without the card! It’s really special to be a member of this amazing club, really iconic. I will come for sure.’
Harry Maguire is reportedly interested in leaving Manchester United this summer, and Chelsea is considering making a deal for him.
The Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service are in effect, and this website is secured by reCAPTCHA.
After last season’s decline in importance under Erik ten Hag, Maguire was determined to fight for his place at Old Trafford.
Before the start of the upcoming Premier League season, Ten Hag has nonetheless removed Maguire from his position as United’s captain.
According to The Sun, Maguire is ‘angry, shocked and upset’ following his meeting with Ten Hag on Sunday in which he told the 30-year-old that he was no longer United captain.
The report claims that Maguire is ready to leave United this summer and Chelsea are among the clubs interested alongside West Ham, Tottenham and Newcastle United.
In a statement released on Sunday, Maguire said: ‘After discussions with the manager today he has informed me he is changing captain. He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.
‘So I wanted to say a massive thank you to the Manchester United fans for all their brilliant support whilst I’ve been wearing the armband.
‘Since the day I took on the role, three and half years ago, it’s been a huge privilege to lead Manchester United and one of the proudest moments of my career to date. It’s one of the greatest honours in club football. I’ve done everything I possibly could to help United be successful – on and off the field.
‘I will always be grateful to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for first giving me the responsibility and I wish whoever now takes it on every success and they will have my full support.’
Bruno Fernandes, who captained United on several occasions in Maguire’s absence last term, is favourite to take the armband on a permanent basis.
In winning his maiden Wimbledon championship, Carlos Alcaraz upset Novak Djokovic and prevented the Serbian from tying Roger Federer for the most singles titles with eight.
Djokovic, 36, was attempting to win his 24th Grand Slam championship and sixth consecutive Wimbledon trophy, but top-seeded Alcaraz defeated him 1-6 7-6 6-1 3-6 6-4, causing him to suffer his first Centre Court defeat since losing to Andy Murray in the 2013 final.
Alcaraz, 20, wins his second major championship after winning the US Open the previous year. With this victory, the young Spaniard keeps the world No. 1 ranking and snaps Djokovic‘s amazing streak of 45 straight victories on Centre Court.
Djokovic went into the final as the heavy favourite but Alcaraz – who has far less experience on grass – has adapted his style to the surface and now adds his Wimbledon title to his Queen’s Club trophy in a truly remarkable summer.
Alcaraz approached the final wanting revenge after severe cramp saw him lose to Djokovic in the last four of the French Open last month and the youngster got off to a strong start against the 2022 champion, forcing him to save break point.
But Djokovic, looking to secure his 35th consecutive Wimbledon match win, bounced back to hold and then raced into a 40-love lead on the Alcaraz serve, converting his third break point before another hold of serve saw him lead 3-0.
Things got even worse for Alcaraz in game four as Djokovic opened up three more chances to break his opponent, securing the double break after the Spaniard put a backhand into the net in what was a horror start.
A comfortable 40-15 hold put Djokovic one game away from a bagel and in game six Alcaraz double faulted before avoiding total humiliation by finally getting on the scoreboard, but it was not enough as the Serbian took the first set 6-1.
Alcaraz needed to conjure up something special given that Djokovic had won his last eight Grand Slam finals after taking the opening set – with six of those eight victories coming in straight sets.
He kept his dreams of a maiden Wimbledon title alive by producing a hold and break in the first two games of the second set to take the lead as Djokovic dragged a forehand wide, much to the delight of the Centre Court crowd.
But Djokovic fought back in game three with his third break of the afternoon, unleashing a huge roar and after saving break point in game four, he went full pantomime-villain mode, cupping his ear to a booing crowd as one spectator shouted at him to ‘get on with it’ due to how long it was taking him to serve.
The duo traded service games to force a second-set decider as Djokovic, who already holds the record for the most Grand Slam tie-breaks won in a single year, looked to win his 16th major tournament tie-break in a row.
It seemed he was set to get the job done by racing into a 3-0 lead but Alcaraz battled back to 3-3 and Djokovic was slapped with a time violation before missing set point at 6-5, with Alcaraz levelling it up again before taking it 7-6 (8-6).
That appeared to rattle Djokovic as Alcaraz broke him in the opening game of the third set and the Serbian kicked off at umpire Fergus Murphy and shouted at his box before his opponent held to open up the lead.
In a match that represented the third largest age gap between players in a Grand Slam men’s singles final in the Open Era, Djokovic appeared to be struggling with his younger opponent’s speed and stamina and started to look vulnerable.
Djokovic was not going down with a fight, though, and held in game three before forcing Alcaraz to save break point in game four as he looked to level up the third set.
But Alcaraz held on before a dramatic, mammoth game five saw Djokovic unleash another rant at umpire Murphy – this time over Irishman starting the clock too quicky – as the Spaniard cooked up a whopping seven break points, appearing to get the job done with his sixth before it was overturned by Hawk-Eye.
Alcaraz, after 26 minutes in game five, broke Djokovic with his seventh break point to lead 4-1 and after he comfortably held 40-15 and went 40-love up on the Djokovic serve in game seven, he registered his fourth break of the afternoon to take the third set 6-1.
Suddenly, Djokovic looked in huge danger and took a long toilet break, with Alcaraz now securing more breaks over him than he had suffered across the entire tournament in the build-up to the final, and the Spaniard held in the first game of the fourth set before he threatened yet another break as game two went to deuce.
Djokovic held, though, and the pair traded service games until another drama-filled game five saw Djokovic knock up three more break points, blowing a kiss to a booing crowd after Alcaraz’s failed drop shot went in the net.
As the match edged closer to the four-hour mark, Djokovic held once again to lead 4-2 before Alcaraz slipped and suffered a fall in game seven, but he got up to hold and keep the fourth set alive.
Djokovic produced two set points at 5-3 on the Alcaraz serve in game nine, though, and took the fourth set 6-3 to set up a mouth-watering decider.
Alcaraz came out swinging by forcing Djokovic to save break point in the opening game of the fifth set but his opponent held and then created his own break point opportunity in two, only for the Spaniard to fend it off.
Alcaraz secured a crucial break in game three and Djokovic completely lost his head, smashing up his racket, putting a dent in the net post as he received a warning and was loudly booed.
The Spanish star held to edge towards the title and some traded service games took us to 5-3 – with Alcaraz needing one more break to wrap up the final. Djokovic held but Alcaraz served out the fifth and final set to take it 6-4 to become Wimbledon champion on a historic afternoon in SW19.
A renowned young cellist passed away after eating a hamburger while on tour in Germany and experiencing anaphylactic shock.
Alexander Ngai-Jun Wu, 19, passed away in August of last year from multiple severe allergies, particularly to dairy products.
While on tour with other members of the Ealing Youth Orchestra, he’mixed’ ingredients at a McDonald‘s in Cologne, western Germany, and went into shock.
Coroner Lydia Brown told West London Coroner’s Court how the ‘outstanding musician’ immediately injected himself with his epipen after reacting to the mixture of foods, which she said had been part of a ‘team-building exercise’.
Despite the efforts of paramedics Alex died in hospital a week later.
Ms Brown said during the inquest there’d been no evidence of reckless behaviour leading to Alex’s death.
She added there were also no grounds to criticise the restaurant over its provision of allergen information.
Ms Brown said: ‘What is tragically apparent is that during the course of that lunchtime, he mingled together several food products from McDonald’s.
‘Some contained dairy food products.
‘I see it as the most awful, unfortunate incident that occurred not due to anyone’s carelessness, but simply as a consequence of an action that went so terribly and unexpectedly wrong.’
She added: ‘I hope his life can be remembered in happier times. This is an unbearable loss.’
According to an online tribute to Alex from family and friends, the young man had chosen to register as an organ donor.
His death allowed five lives to be saved, as well as restoring eyesight for two other people.
The tribute read: ‘Alex, or Jun, wholeheartedly embraced life with tremendous energy, spreading happiness through his music, his character and his humour. He was generous to his friends, family and strangers.
‘Alex managed his health challenges with great maturity and calmness. Despite the limitations these placed on him, he still maintained a buoyant and positive attitude.’
Ealing Youth Orchestra also said Alex’s fellow musicians had been ‘devasted’ by his sudden death.
A spokesperson for the orchestra said: ‘Alex was an outstanding musician and had enjoyed many previous tours with us.
‘The EYO family has been devastated by this tragedy and we continue to support Alex’s family and the orchestra and tour staff as we come to terms with this.’
In Dumfries and Galloway, a four-year-old child was discovered ‘unresponsive’ and later died.
Police were called to a residence in Stranraer on Sunday and are now looking into the unidentified fatality.
After being transferred to the hospital, the small girl passed away.
A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: ‘Around 6.10am on Sunday 16 July, officers were called to a report of an unresponsive child at an address on Eastwood Avenue, Stranraer.
‘Emergency services attended and the four-year-old girl was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
‘Inquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of death, which is currently being treated as unexplained.’
The unfathomable Cerberus heatwave has been roasting Southern Europe, and a second heatwave dubbed Charon is hot on its heels, bringing even more terrible weather, like wildfires.
Since a volcanic eruption in 2021, this is the island’s first major natural disaster.
The Canary Island‘s El Pinar de Puntagorda, a forested region, is where the fire first broke out this morning.
Fernando Clavijo, president of the Canary Islands, said: ‘The number of people who need to be evacuated could reach 1,000. It depends on whether we can bring these strong winds under control.’
Around 346 acres have been destroyed in the blaze.
Island authorities have been forced to seek help from other territories in the archipelago, such as Gomera and Tenerife.
The second heatwave has been named after a Greek god who ferries souls into the underworld.
One man died in northern Italy due to the Cerberus weather front, named after the three-headed dog who guards the gates of the underworld in Greek mythology.
The European Space Agency warned: ‘Temperatures are expected to climb to 48°C on the islands of Sicily and Sardinia – potentially the hottest temperatures ever recorded in Europe.’

Health authorities have issued a red alert warning for 10 Italian cities, including Rome, Florence and Bologna.
‘Heat is a silent killer. So this is the main concern that people’s lives are at risk,’ said climate scientist Hannah Cloke.
Emergency measures have also been introduced for workers in Greece, while wildfires have broken out across the country, as well as in Croatia.
State media claimed on Sunday that morality police in Iran will start patrols to ensure that women adhere to rigid Islamic dress standards, ten months after the death of a young lady in their care sparked widespread protests.
Police will resume car and foot patrols around the nation starting on Sunday, according to Saeid Montazeralmahdi, a spokeswoman for Iran’s enforcement agency, Faraja, the state-run Fars news agency reported.
Officers would first issue warnings to women who are disobeying before taking legal action against those who “insist on breaking the norms,” the officer stated.
The morality police were cast into the international spotlight in September last year, when 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died three days after being arrested by the force for wearing her hijab, or headscarf, incorrectly and taken to a “re-education” center.
Her death sparked nationwide protests that rocked the country, posing one of the biggest domestic threats to Iran’s ruling clerical regime in more than a decade.
Authorities responded violently to suppress the months-long movement, during which witnesses said the morality police had virtually disappeared from the streets of Tehran.
Iran executed at least 582 people last year, a 75% increase on 2021, according to human rights groups who say the rise reflects an effort by Tehran to instill fear among anti-regime protesters.
The morality police have access to power, arms and detention centers and control over “re-education centers,” Human Rights Watch told CNN last year. The group is sanctioned by the United States and the European Union.
The centers act like detention facilities, where women – and sometimes men – are taken into custody for failing to comply with the state’s rules on modesty.
Inside the facilities, detainees are given classes about Islam and the importance of the hijab, and are forced to sign a pledge to abide by the state’s clothing regulations before they are released.
Several Telegram channels reported strikes on the bridge, and a local authority verified at least two fatalities. On Monday, Russia’s Transport Ministry announced that the spans of the Crimean Bridge, the only connection between the annexed peninsula and Russia, had been damaged.
The Transport Ministry posted on Telegram that the roadway on some of the spans of the Crimean Bridge had been damaged.
The distances between the piers that support a bridge are known as its spans.
The bridge was partially damaged and collapsed last October as a result of a large explosion.
Sergey Aksenov, the Russia-appointed head of Crimea, said an “emergency incident” had been reported, halting traffic on the bridge, which serves as a vital logistical node for Moscow’s military in its war against Ukraine.
Two strikes were allegedly carried out on the bridge around 3 a.m. local time, damaging part of the bridge, according to the Telegram channel Grey Zone, which supports the Wagner mercenary group led by Yevgeny Prigozhin.
Explosions were heard around 3:04 a.m. and 3:20 a.m. local time, Grey Zone and popular Crimean blogger ‘TalipoV Online Z’ said on Telegram.
CNN is unable to verify the reports.
Videos posted on Telegram by Baza, Grey Zone and other Crimean news outlets appeared to show part of the bridge collapsed and a vehicle damaged in the latest incident.
The governor of Russia’s Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, confirmed that two people were killed and a third person was injured in the incident.
Gladkov said a girl was injured and her parents were killed while traveling in the car that was damaged in the incident.
Emergency responders and law enforcement have been dispatched to the scene, said Aksenov, the head of Crimea. The Transport Ministry said an inspection of the bridge was underway.
Aksenov urged residents and those traveling to and from Crimea to choose an alternative land route.
The nearly 12-mile bridge, also known as the Kerch Bridge, is the longest in Europe and carries both road and rail traffic.
The bridge was severely damaged on October 8 when a fuel tanker exploded and destroyed a large section of the road.
It holds huge strategic and symbolic importance for Russia, which built the 19-kilometer bridge at a cost of around $3.7 billion after Moscow illegally annexed Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula in 2014. It was the physical expression of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s objective to take over Ukraine and bind it to Russia forever.
It is a critical artery for supplying Crimea with both its daily needs and supplies for the military, in addition to fuel and goods for civilians.
A Russian-backed official of the peninsula, Elena Elekchyan, said Crimea is well supplied with fuel, food and industrial goods.
After the October 8 blast, Russia quickly set about repairs to the span. It was fully reopened to traffic in February.
Earlier this month, Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar made what appeared to be the clearest admission yet that Ukrainian forces were responsible for the October attack.
Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said on Tuesday that he would not run for reelection and would instead leave politics.
Following a May election in which the majority of Thais rejected military-backed governance, the news came two days before the parliament of Thailand was scheduled to vote for a new prime minister.
Since taking over as prime minister in a coup in 2014 while serving as army chief, Prayut, 69, has ruled Thailand. He was elected leader with the support of the senate after his party’s coalition secured the majority of seats in parliament in 2019.
Thai opposition parties swept the board in May’s nationwide election as voters delivered a powerful rebuke of the military-backed establishment that has ruled since the coup, capping years of rising anger over how conservative cliques have governed the kingdom.
The progressive Move Forward Party, which gained a huge following among young Thais for its reformist platform, won the most seats and the largest share of the popular vote.
Pheu Thai, the main opposition party that has been a populist force in Thailand for 20 years, came second.
Prayut was not expected to gain enough support in the lower house to win another term as premier, as his party only won 36 seats in the May election – though the final outcome still remains uncertain.
Prayut will remain as prime minister until the new government is formed.
The former general’s rule as a military coup leader turned prime minister has been marred by growing authoritarianism and widening inequality.
In 2020, young people across the country took to the streets and called for Prayut’s resignation. The mass protests stemmed from failed promises to restore democracy, and what activists say is a repression of civil rights and freedoms.
His government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic and economy, nepotism and lack of transparency and accountability, also amplified calls for Prayut to step down.
Thitinan Pongsudhirak, political scientist and director of the Institute of Security and International Studies at Chulalongkorn University, said Prayut’s retirement “represents the defeat of the military regime that has been in power over the past nine years since the coup in 2014,” and could be seen as a “boost to pro-democracy supporters.”
“To many Thais, Prayut’s departure from politics is overdue. He seized power in May 2014, ran a lackluster military government for five years and another rickety elected government since 2019 thanks to a military-arranged constitution,” Thitinan said.
“Thailand has seen signs of economic stagnation, political decay and its lowest international standing ever.”
It could potentially help Move Forward’s leader Pita Limjaroenrat and his chances to form a post-election government, Thitinan added.
African leaders gathered Sunday (July. 16) in Gigiri, Nairobi County for the African Union’s fifth Mid-Year coordination meeting.
The summit aimed among other things to address critical issues of African integration and division of labour.
The meeting was led by Kenya’s President. William Ruto called for a reform of the AU focusing on the body’s financial autonomy.
“The pan-African movement has always been about sovereignty and agency,” the leader said.
“First and foremost, chronic dependence even on well-meaning partners is inconsistent with the aspiration of independence, sovereignty and agency. And I therefore believe that we must take seriously the recommendations that have been made towards making our organization an organization that stands on its feet, and an organization that is funded by us.”
According to A.U. figures, less than 40% of Member States pay their yearly contributions to the institution.
A piece on the body’s website titled _”_African Union sustainable funding strategy gains momentum” broke down the institution’s2020 budget as follows:
US$157.2 million to finance operational budget of the Union ; US$216.9 million will go into the program budget and US$273.1 million will finance peace support operations.
“Peace support operations will be funded by member states and international partners. Of the total budget, 38% is to be assessed on Member States while 61% will be from partners. The operating budget will be fully funded by Member States while the programme budget will be funded 41% by Member States and 59% solicited from international partners,” the document read.
Debt burden
President Ruto pointed to the burden of debt many countries on the continent carry, championing a fairer financial system.
A UN report found that, African nations are disadvantaged borrowers compared to the wealthiest European nations.
“The UN secretary general himself has said that our continent pays anywhere up to 8 times more than our brothers and sisters elsewhere do. It is only fair that we have a financing mechanism that treats everybody equally.”

Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the bullion van robbery which claimed the life of one police officer.
This was confirmed by the Ghana Police Service in a statement on their Facebook page.
Among the apprehended suspects is one who was arrested yesterday. These individuals are currently in custody, providing assistance in the ongoing police investigation.
The police administration has assured the public that further updates will be provided in due course.
The incident, which unfolded in broad daylight, prompted an intense manhunt by the police for the suspected robbers responsible for the killing of a policeman in Ablekuma, located in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
The victim, Lance Corporal Calystus Amoah, tragically lost his life during an apparent robbery attempt targeting the occupants of a vehicle at a fuel service station in Ablekuma.
According to reports, the alleged robbers trailed the bullion van to the fuel station, where the shootout subsequently occurred.
Lance Corporal Amoah, positioned in the front passenger seat of the vehicle as part of his security duties, was shot multiple times at close range. The incident drew the attention of residents, both private and commercial drivers, as well as traders in the community, following the escape of the four robbers.
The arrest of the four individuals marks a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the Ablekuma bullion van robbery.
“Four people of interest have so far been arrested in connection with the Ablekuma bullion van robbery, including one of the suspects who was arrested yesterday,” the statement said.
“The four are in custody assisting police investigation. Further details will be communicated in due course”.
On Saturday morning, early entry into Belarus was observed by Wagner fighters, according to a monitoring group.
The mercenaries and Minsk’s own armed forces would engage in combined military training exercises, according to the Belarusian Defence Ministry.
At least 60 trucks, buses, and other huge vehicles entered the country in eastern Europe with police present, according to the independent monitoring organisation Belaruski Hajun, which keeps tabs on military operations.
The group did not immediately provide photos or videos of the vehicles but said they had license plates from Russian-occupied areas of eastern Ukraine.
Wagner mercenaries fought alongside Russian troops in Ukraine until a short-lived mutiny by leader Yevgeny Prigozhin last month.
Prigozhin was forced into exile in Belarus, where president Aleksandr Lukashenko also offered to station some of the mercenary fighters.
The convoy headed toward a military base outside Osipovichi, a town 230 kilometers (142 miles) north of the Ukrainian border.
Satellite images analyzed this month showed rows of tent-like structures that appeared to have been built at the base between June 15 and June 30.

The president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, said at the time that Minsk could use Wagner’s experience and expertise, and that he had offered the fighters an ‘abandoned military unit’ to set up camp.
That same week, a leader of an anti-Lukashenko guerrilla group said construction of a site for the mercenaries was underway near Osipovichi.
A spokesperson for Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service the force also had observed ‘some groups’ of Wagner fighters crossing from Russia into Belarus.

The Belarusian Defense Ministry said in an online statement late Friday that it had developed a ‘road map’ with Wagner’s management for joint training exercises drills by the nation’s military personnel and the private mercenaries.
Earlier Friday, the Defense Ministry said Wagner fighters had begun training Belarusian soldiers.
A TV channel affiliated with the ministry showed footage of fighters in black masks instructing soldiers on how to shoot and provide first aid.
An indirect shell’s thump trembles the ground. It’s close enough to the soldier leaning on the abandoned car to get his attention, but not close enough to prevent Max Denison-Pender from painting him.
The crump of another round reaches their ears, but Max can now distinguish between incoming and outgoing artillery fire after spending two weeks embedded with an assault battalion behind Bakhmut‘s frontlines.
Additionally, the early morning sunshine is simply too magnificent to pass up from the viewpoint of an artist. He smiles and gives Max a hug after presenting his exhausted subject with the finished but still wet portrait before heading off to the front lines in the hopes of making it back in time to see the evening’s sunset.
Max, 25, is a British artist and no stranger to pushing the boundaries of art. Born in Chile and having moved to England at 13, he is an advocate of art in the extreme.
Known for eschewing the comfort of a cosy studio, Max prefers to pack his easel, paints and brushes to head off to far-flung corners of the planet to document life in the raw through the medium of paint.
His previous subjects have included erupting volcanoes in Iceland, illicit miners in the Congo, encounters with indigenous Korubo members in the Amazon Rainforest and studies of rare and dangerous wildlife across the globe.
Max believes adventuring artists have a role to play. ‘It’s never tourism,’ he says, ‘but more of a palpable urge to witness and document the extreme edges of life on Earth.’
But this is arguably his boldest move so far; three weeks painting on the Eastern Ukrainian front, which has experienced some of the fiercest fighting since the ill-conceived invasion of Ukraine by the Kremlin began in February last year.
Mania rests against an abandoned car behind his finished portrait(Picture: Henry Harte)Max Denison-Pender – ‘There aren’t many ways to explain to friends and family that you’re leaving for a battlefield to paint humans at war’ (Picture: Henry Harte)
‘Just because something’s dangerous, why should we let it get in the way of creating powerful art?’ Max asks back in his south London studio.
‘There aren’t many ways to explain to friends and family that you’re leaving for a battlefield to paint humans at war. I only told my dad the day before I left.’
Max holds on to his art supplies as he joins a battalion for a ride on a BMP fighting vehicle (Picture: Henry Harte)
Sitting alongside Max is Henry Harte, a photographer, videographer and long-time friend. Together, under their project Art in the Extreme, they visit all corners of the globe, seeking to connect through the combined power of art and film with those living in the most hazardous locations.
With the help of the one-man charity Dorset to Donetsk, they organised a last-minute trip to Ukraine to shed some light on the human experiences often overlooked amidst the chaos of a war now entering its eighteenth month.
‘The more we didn’t know about the trip, the better,’ admits Henry, still surrounded by the SD cards and disposable cameras he brought with him. ‘We thought, “let’s just go”. We hardly planned it. We’d already been to the Amazon, Congo, Rwanda and everywhere in between but this was something completely different.’
Max and Henry would soon find themselves in Bakhmut, stationed at a ‘stabilisation point’ – an area that soldiers call home when not fighting that lies only 2km away from the frontline.
The Russian artillery has a range of 30km. Refueling, reloading, eating and sleeping all happen here. But this is primarily a place where wounded soldiers can be tended to by medics before being sent to the nearest hospital. They are hot targets for Russian drone and missile attacks.
‘The first day was terrifying, to be perfectly honest,’ admits Max. ‘My heart was pounding in my chest. We sat in an SUV, hurtling past all these blown-out buildings as we made our way to our temporary home for the next few weeks.
‘I was thinking, “Oh god, what are we doing?”. When we finally reached the battalion, it was nothing but smiles and hugs from everyone. The welcome was overwhelming. Everyone was just so happy to see us. It was a lot to take in.’
It is only when Max unwraps his brushes and sets up his easel that he feels a greater understanding of those with whom he finds himself living with. Inside the cramped confines of a destroyed tank, Max paints a portrait of Torri, a combat medic. Along with her sister, she left her high-paying city job in the US and returned home to help on the frontline.
At only 22 years old, Torri has already made a name for herself among the battle-hardened ranks of her battalion. ‘Soldiers kept telling us that she’s saved at least 50 people and that not a single person has died whilst under her care,’ Max says.
‘Beyond the uniforms and body armour, I wanted to explore this idea of what it really means to be human in extreme circumstances,’ he continues. ‘But to do this, you have to catch people off guard to experience their genuine side.
‘You need to seize the inspiration the moment it comes to you. You can’t miss it. Okay, so this time, my inspiration takes me to an active warzone, but the more I painted these people, the more I realised that they are just people. They’re someone’s father, mother, sister or brother.’
It soon became a routine for Max to move between groups of soldiers, asking if they would be willing to take some time out to sit and let him paint them; often drawing the attention of curious crowds young and old.
‘Whenever I set up my easel, everyone always seemed keen to understand why someone would travel from the safety of their country to paint them amongst rubble and these half standing buildings scarred with shrapnel. The mood amongst them always lifted.’
But such peace was often short-lived. On one occasion, before he even had the chance to start his portrait of another young soldier, Max was informed that they had lost their hand in battle the following night.
‘There were times when I didn’t have time to process what I was seeing, but I wasn’t there to capture a moment the same way a photographer might,’ Max explains.
‘My paintings are essentially a result of hundreds of moments combined. I sometimes see painting as an even more empathetic form of photojournalism.
‘There’s nothing I aim for. There’s no end goal. You’re like a sponge soaking up what you experience in the moment; The painting only revealing itself at the end.’
Often, the contrast of interactions between soldiers throughout the loud, intense operations of their day and the quiet evenings spent eating and laughing inside the shelter of abandoned houses was almost too much to process.
Henry, who for nearly three weeks had been capturing Max’s journey on video, developed a sense of knowing when to film soldiers in their most intimate states and when best to simply observe.
He recalls Dima, a notoriously proficient drone operator. This same man, proud to showcase his expertise through the screen of a handheld monitor, was also the one to offer him his meal as they rested in the evening.
‘They all kept trying to share their food with us,’ Henry says. ‘I asked one guy why he wasn’t eating. He just rubbed his belly and made a face, pretending to be full. After a while, it hit me. He was probably nervous about what was coming the next day and didn’t feel like eating.’
Max’s Ukrainian war portraits will be shown at The Fine Art Commissions Gallery from the 10th – 21st October, 2023. All funds raised through the exhibition go directly to the volunteer initiative Dorset to Donetsk.
‘When I opened the gallery in 1997, never once did I imagine, over two decades later, we would be hosting an exhibition comprising paintings from a major ongoing conflict in Europe,’ admits Sara Stewart, founder and managing director of the Fine Art Commissions Gallery.
For now, neither the small child staring at the barrel of a destroyed tank in Kyiv city centre nor the soldier who shares the photos he keeps of his family with his crew will understand just how important Max’s portraits of them may be.
But in a war more visually accessible to the world than ever in history, his paintings of the true heartbeat of this battleground will no doubt serve as a reminder of the countless, human moments we never caught.
‘For a short while at least,’ Max reflects, ‘I hoped they felt they hadn’t been forgotten by the rest of the world.’
Without Russia’s consent, a critical agreement authorising the sale of grain from Ukraine is likely to expire on Monday.
According to Reuters, the last ship to travel as part of the Black Sea Agreement departed the port of Odesa early on Sunday.
On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin informed South African President Cyril Ramaphosa over the phone that the deal had not achieved its goals.
According to a Kremlin readout of the conversation, “[Putin] stressed that the obligations set out in the pertinent Russia-UN memorandum to remove barriers to the export of Russian food and fertilisers still remain unfulfilled.”
“Moreover, the main goal of the deal, namely the supply of grain to countries in need, including those on the African continent, has not been realized,” it said.
Putin has previously complained about restrictions over its own exports but has agreed to previous extensions.
The deal, which was first brokered by Turkey and the United Nations following the outbreak of Russia’s war on Ukraine in July 2022, creates procedures to ensure the safe export of grain from Ukrainian ports.
Under the deal, grain ships are able to navigate through a safe corridor in the Black Sea under the direction of Ukrainian pilots, and then pass through the Bosphorus Strait – an important shipping corridor in north-west Turkey – in order to reach global markets.
It has proven vital for stabilizing global food prices and bringing relief to the developing countries who rely on Ukrainian exports.
The deal’s survival continues to rest in Russia’s hands, and Moscow has repeatedly threatened to quit the pact.
Prior to its third renewal in May, the Kremlin had remained elusive as to whether it would remain in the deal, before agreeing to a last-minute extension.
Russia also suspended its participation for a few days in late October and early November 2022, citing drone attacks on the city of Sevastopol in occupied Crimea.
Moscow later announced that it would reverse course and rejoin the agreement for a further 120 days, following mediation.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was officially welcomed by the MLS team on Saturday, and on Sunday, he will be introduced to the crowd at a spectacular event called “The Unveil.”
Messi left Paris Saint-Germain in June after spending two years with the French powerhouses and helping Argentina win the World Cup in December.
The 36-year-old at one stage looked close to sealing a return to Barcelona, the club he left in 2021 after coming through their academy and scoring 672 goals in 778 appearances.
Messi opted for a new challenge State-side, however, signing a two-and-a-half year deal.
‘I’m very excited to start this next step in my career with Inter Miami and in the United States,’ said Messi
‘This is a fantastic opportunity and together we will continue to build this beautiful project.
‘The idea is to work together to achieve the objectives we set, and I’m very eager to start helping here in my new home.’
Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham is among those who has been laying the groundwork for Messi’s arrival for a number of years, hailing his arrival as the start ‘of the next phase our adventure’.
‘Ten years ago, when I started my journey to build a new team in Miami, I said that I dreamt of bringing the greatest players in the world to this amazing city,’ said Beckham.
‘[I wanted] players who shared the ambition I had when I joined LA Galaxy to help grow football in the USA and to build a legacy for the next generation in this sport that we love so much.
‘Today that dream came true. I couldn’t be prouder that a player of Leo’s calibre is joining our club, but I am also delighted to welcome a good friend, an amazing person and his beautiful family to join our Inter Miami community.
‘The next phase of our adventure starts here, and I can’t wait to see Leo take to the pitch.’
Anthony Acquaye, a security policy expert, has urged the bipartisan committee established to look into the audio recording of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to demand a change in the president’s authority to name the IGP.
According to an expert statement dated July 14, 2023, a comprehensive and effective inquiry is needed along with strong policy recommendations for reforming the appointment of the IGP.
The call by the expert is on the back of a 7-member bi-partisan committee established by Parliament to conduct a thorough investigation into the leaked tape allegedly involving a plot to have the IGP removed from office.
According to him, the bi-partisan committee is in the right order. However, parliamentary regulations may prolong the work of the committee.
“Constituting seven (7) member special bipartisan committee to investigate into the alleged IGP leaked tape makes both sides of the political domain represented. However, generally, the committee delays or prolong its work, due to the boundaries of internal regulations of parliament. This cripples the extent the committee can go for more revelations into the issue of strict and strong policy recommendations for reforms as compared to the Independent Commission, which explores the external regulations for an immediate, adequate, and compact result. Nevertheless, for the speaker of parliament to concede and direct the establishment of the bipartisan committee beyond the defence and Interior Committee is highly recommended.
“Again, whoever chairs the committee must not be too hard in his or her leadership style which can lead to authority defence and also too soft, to result in one person dominating the process, the timeline for the committee to submit its report to parliament should not be temper, in any form to avoid prolonged decision on the matter,” parts of the statement read.
In order to establish the authenticity of the leaked tape, the expert, Anthony Acquaye, advised that the committee must collaborate with forensic intelligence departments from both the Armed Forces and Police Service.
According to him, this cooperative approach will enhance the credibility of the investigation and strengthen the committee’s findings.
He added that as part of the committee’s recommendations, it must suggest amendment of the power of the president to appoint the IGP must be amended with the adoption of a new mechanism for doing the appointment.
“Furthermore, the committee in its quest to establish the authenticity of the tape can collaborate with other forensic intelligence departments from the Armed Forces or Police Service. More so, the committee must also open its doors for more intelligence gathering to help them in their decision-making for strong report outcomes.
“Inasmuch as the terms of references set are purposeful and achievable, it is also necessary to plead to the committee to indicate in its recommendations, that the power by the president to appoint the Inspector General of Police (IGP) be amended with the adoption of the new mechanism in appointing IGP. This is because, for so many years the perceptions by the public, that before an officer who has gone through the ranks to Commissioner of Police will be appointed as IGP, he or she must be affiliated to a political party has been confirmed by the leaked audio, if its authenticity is proving to be true,” the statement added.
In the upcoming NPP primaries, an aspiring candidate is confident that he will be able to beat incumbent NDC leader Bawa Mohammed Braimah for the Ejura Sekyedumase Constituency seat.
Gifty Ndoma believes she has what it takes to bridge the political divide and win the seat in the 2024 elections, and has urged delegates to support her.
Bridging the political divide between young people and political parties necessitates creative strategies that recognize the valid concerns of young people, she explained.
Madam Gifty says because it is necessary for political parties to meet young people where they are, she would do so in order to better understand the trends and identify critical ideas for strengthening connections between young people and the party.
In an interview with the media after picking up the nomination form, the former constituency secretary for the party told the gathering, “Insha Allah, Ejura will fall for the NPP.”
Madam Gifty says her confidence to pick up nomination forms was inspired by the party’s rank and file in the constituency.
“The party faithful have seen my leadership qualities,” she said, adding that, “they have confidence and trust in me.”
According to her, she has served the constituency well in numerous positions and would bring in accountable leadership to guarantee their concerns are heard in parliament.
Madam Gifty and her party supporters walked through the streets of Ejura to demonstrate her intentions and bring more people closer to her for victory.
They all dressed in party colors, confident that their chosen aspirant would make a significant impact and finally win the primary.
They also sung victory and party songs, encouraging the contender to win and represent them in the parliamentary elections.
“For the first time in history, the constituency elected a female party secretary. The constituents and the party have never disappointed me because I am a listener,” she explained.
On July 11, 2023, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) opened nominations for parliamentary primaries in areas where the party has no representation.
The nomination period will end on Thursday, August 10, with elections scheduled from September to December.
According to the party, male aspiring parliamentary candidates must pay a non-refundable filing fee of GH₵35,000, while women and those with disabilities pay half of the fee.
Aspirants have been asked to follow the party’s constitution and use the proper mechanism to channel any issues that may arise.
Considering employing cluster munitions against Ukraine “if they are used against us,” Russian President Vladimir Putin stated, his country has a stockpile of them.
Putin made his remarks just days after American-manufactured cluster munitions were sent to Ukraine, though a senior Ukrainian military official told CNN that they had not yet been deployed.
The Russian leader claimed in an interview with a pro-Kremlin journalist that “Russia has a sufficient supply of various types of cluster munitions.”
“If they are used against us, we reserve the right to mirror actions.”
Washington’s decision to send cluster bombs to Kyiv was controversial and criticized by human rights groups.
The weapons are particularly dangerous to civilians and noncombattants when fired near populated areas because they scatter explosive material, so-called “bomblets,” across large areas. Those that fail to explode on impact can detonate years later, posing a long-term risk to anyone who encounters them, similar to landmines.
What are cluster munitions?
Cluster munitions contain multiple explosives that are released over an area up to the size of several football fields. They can be dropped from a plane or launched from the ground or sea.
The submunitions are released in flight and fall to the ground. They can range from the tens to many hundreds
They are designed to explode on impact but as many as a third don’t, and remain a deadly risk to civilians for years to come
94% of recorded cluster bomb casualties are civilians, of which almost 40% are children
Note: Cluster munitions can vary widely in design and scale, this graphic only aims to explain their general function.
The danger posed by cluster weapons has prompted more than 100 countries – including the United Kingdom, France and Germany – to sign a treaty prohibiting their use.
US President Joe Biden told CNN that the decision whether to send cluster munitions to Ukraine was “very difficult,” but he opted to do so because Kyiv needs more ammunition to continue its fight to push Russian troops out of Ukrainian territory.
A top official at the US Defense Department said Kyiv gave “assurances in writing” that it would not use the cluster munitions in urban areas.
In his interview, Putin said that the Biden administration had called the use of cluster munitions a war crime and that he agreed with that assessment.
It’s not clear exactly which comments Putin was referring to, but former White House press secretary Jen Psaki said last year at the outset of the conflict that reports of Russia’s use of cluster bombs, if confirmed, would constitute a war crime.
Putin also claimed that Russia has not yet used cluster munitions, despite evidence to the contrary.
In March, the United Nations said it had compiled credible reports that Russian forces had used cluster munitions in populated areas at least 24 times. A CNN investigation last year found that the Kremlin fired 11 cluster rockets at Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, during the war’s opening days.
Marketa Vondrousova defeated Ons Jabeur in the women’s singles final on Saturday, becoming the first unseeded champion in Wimbledon history.
Jabeur was seeking revenge after losing to Elena Rybkina in the final last year, but the Tunisian trailblazer has now finished second twice.
Both players sought to win their first major championship of their professional careers, but it was Czech world No. 42 Vondrousova who triumphed and won her first Grand Slam trophy.
Not many have predicted Vondrousova to win Wimbledon but she beat four seeded players to become the second-lowest ranked player to reach the final since the WTA rankings were introduced, before stunning sixth-seed Jabeur 6-4 6-4 on Centre Court.
‘Tennis is crazy!’ Vondrousova said in her on-court interview. ‘I don’t know how I’ve done it. The comebacks are not easy you never know what to expect. I was hoping I could comeback to this level and now I am here.
‘I want to thank my box, all you guys are amazing, my little sister is crying up there. It’s amazing [to have my husband here], tomorrow is [the] first anniversary of our wedding. It’s amazing to have you guys being here with me.
‘I made a bet with my coach [over a tattoo]. He said if I win a Grand Slam he’s going to get one also. So I think we’re going to go tomorrow! I think I’m going to have some beer maybe.
‘It was an exhausting two weeks, and I was getting myself together the last few days. I was so nervous before this game. Thank you so much guys for the support and coming here.’
Jabeur got off to a strong start with a hold and break in the first two games of the match, going 40-15 up on Vondrousova’s serve as the Czech fired into the net at 40-30.
But Vondrousova produced two break points of her own in game three, converting the second as a forehand shot from Jabeur missed the mark.
Vondrousova looked to level up the set in a marathon game four as Jabeur produced her third, fourth, fifth and sixth break points of the match – but the unseeded star fended them off to make it 2-2.
Jabeur looked fired up and responded with a dominant hold before racing into a 40-love lead on the Vondrousova serve in game six, this time getting the job done first time to regain her lead and edge towards the first set.
Vondrousova, though, responded emphatically by taking a 40-love lead on Jabeur’s serve and once again handed herself the chance to level things up in her next service game.
After Vondrousova made it 4-4, she turned the first set on its head in game nine with a crucial break, her third of the match, which gave her the chance to serve for the set, closing it out 6-4 with an impressive hold to love.
Things looked dangerous for Jabeur as Vondrousova took a 30-love lead on her serve in the first game of the second set – and despite the North African battling back to 30-30 – she was once again broken by her lower-ranked opponent.
Jabeur, who has produced numerous comebacks in SW19 this year, broke Vondrousova straight back, though, to prompt the loudest roar on Centre Court of the match so far.
Jabeur then hit a real purple patch as she held and secured a potentially match-turning double break, resulting in another huge cheer from spectators, who were determined to see the final go the distance.
Another twist followed, though, as Vondrousova registered her fifth break of the match in game five and held to level up the second set at 3-3.
The duo traded service games but Vondrousova broke again and held to take the second set 7-5 and secure the Wimbledon title, falling to the floor in front of a star-studded crowd that included the likes of Lewis Capaldi, Emma Watson, Andrew Garfield and Dame Maggie Smith.
‘I don’t really know what’s happening right now, it’s an amazing feeling,’ Vondrousova added.
‘Ons, congratulations, you are such an inspiration to all of us. I hope you will win one day, you are an amazing person. Congratulations to the team.
‘After everything I have been through, I had a cast last time, it’s amazing I can stand here and hold this.’
The Ghanaian Drill rapper Yaw Tog has stated that he thinks his work was instrumental in the Recording Academy’s decision to include the genre in the prestigious Grammy Awards.
The Grammys’ scope was expanded to include a variety of genres, including Afrobeat, Afro-fusion, Afro-Pop, and more after the announcement of the new categories in June 2023.
In a 3news.com report, Yaw Tog confidently stated, “I think I was one of the reasons the Grammy added the Ghanaian Drill to the new category.”
He acknowledged the collective efforts of fellow artists, including the Asakaa boys, Kofi Jana, and Kweku Flick, in contributing to this achievement.
Together, they created exceptional music and left an undeniable impact.
Yaw Tog shared that he stumbled upon the news of the genre’s inclusion through his road manager’s Instagram story while relaxing at home.
Overwhelmed with disbelief, he exclaimed, “When I saw it, I was like, ‘Yo, this can’t be possible.’ But when I saw it, I was just making noise for like 5 minutes because we are exhausted.”
The addition of Ghanaian Drill music to the Grammy Awards represents a remarkable milestone in recognizing the talent and innovation emanating from Africa and its diaspora.
The genre’s distinct fusion of traditional Ghanaian sounds with contemporary hip-hop and trap influences has captivated global audiences and garnered a devoted fan base.
Expressing enthusiasm for the changes, Harvey Mason Jr., the CEO of the Recording Academy, stated, “We are excited to honor and celebrate the creators and recordings in these categories, while also exposing a wider range of music to fans worldwide.”
This move presents an opportunity for the world to discover and appreciate Africa’s rich musical heritage.
Scheduled for Sunday, February 4, 2024, the Grammy Awards ceremony will take place at the Crypto.com Arena (formerly the Staples Center) in Los Angeles.
With a history of hosting the Grammy Awards 21 times in the past 25 years, the venue adds to the anticipation of another spectacular event.
As the official date draws closer, Ghanaians hold hope that these new categories will provide local artists in the Highlife and Ghanaian Drill scenes a platform to shine on the international stage, showcasing their exceptional talent and contributing to the global music landscape.
As you delve into this article, it’s highly likely that yet another Nigerian is embarking on a quest to establish a new Guinness World Record, adding to the ongoing frenzy that has captivated Africa’s most populous nation.
Keeping track of the multitude of recent attempts is a challenge in itself. From a remarkable 200-hour singing marathon to a continuous crying endeavor currently underway, and from a determined woman’s quest to set the longest indoor stay record to a captivating attempt at frying the most snails among several culinary-themed endeavors, the “record-a-thon” craze showcases the diversity of Nigerian aspirations and their eagerness to leave an indelible mark in the world of records.
You can pinpoint the exact moment when some of the country’s 200 million people seemingly decided that every world record must fall – a medium-sized crowd braved rain and darkness for four days in May at a swanky venue in Lagos to watch Hilda Baci, a tired-looking chef, cook her way into the record books.
She cooked for a total of 100 hours, and although it was officially logged at 93 hours 11 minutes by the Guinness World Record (GWR), it was still enough to set a new record.
Since then, no day has passed without the now familiar sight of a digital clock on a dark screen signalling that someone, or a couple, is attempting a new world record.
Even GWR is struggling to keep up, after basking in the initial swell of attention as Nigerians keenly followed Ms Baci’s feat.
“Please enough of the record-a-thons,” the organisation humorously tweeted on Tuesday after someone broached the idea of not one, but two separate attempts – an “idea-a-thon” and a “puff-puff-a-thon”.
Hilda Baci sparked the craze by setting a cooking record in May
This followed a previous GWR tweet saying that people should first apply before attempting to set a record. The “polite reminder” was seen as a cheeky dig at Nigerians after a masseuse collapsed while aiming to set a new record for the longest time spent massaging non-stop.
That attempt was now abandoned, she said, adding that her 50 hours was enough for the record, even though she didn’t apply to Guinness.
It is the same bravado that has marked the recent wave, with people boldly announcing their attempts without applying to GWR and not sticking to the rules.
Two chefs turned off their stoves and went to sleep during their attempts, which disqualified them.
“To avoid disappointment, it is important to ensure that what you want to attempt is a valid record title and that you understand the guidelines,” a GWR representative told the BBC.
They said the organisation had seen a spike in applications from Nigerians but could not confirm if the number of attempts from one country itself constituted a record.
Farominiyi Kemi will need a bigger fryer for her record puff-puff attempt
“Nigerians are funny people and we tend to ride on the wave of whatever is happening at the moment. In less than three months the craze would die down,” said Farominiyi Kemi, the double-attempter who broke the patience of Guinness.
The idea of two attempts was a joke, she told the BBC, but frying a record number of puff-puff – a soft round deep-fried dough like a donut – has now taken firm root in her mind.
One man who is definitely taking his attempt seriously is secondary school teacher John Obot, who is going for the longest time reading aloud in September.
He has obtained approval from GWR and is rehearsing towards crushing the current record of 124 hours set last year in Turkey by Rysbai Isakov of Kyrgyzstan.
Mr Obot aims to read aloud non-stop for 140 hours in the peaceful coastal city of Uyo in southern Nigeria.
“The motivation is to promote reading culture in Nigeria,” he said, leaving no doubt about his capability during a short call in which it was hard to get a word in edgeways.
“I decided to choose a record that is meaningful,” he added, taking a swipe at other attempts, including one for the most coconuts dehusked only using teeth.
“Of what value is that record, or the people that want to kiss?” asked Mr Obot, who proclaimed his attempt superior just for the Nigerian and English classics he would be reading on the day.
Tembu Ebere says he is crying for African youths to show them there is no limit
That kissing attempt has – disappointingly for some – been banned in Ekiti state where it was planned, with authorities warning all involved that there would be consequences if they went ahead with their attempt to set a record for kissing non-stop. GWR removed this category after people collapsed during previous attempts (outside Nigeria).
“[The] ‘kiss-a-thon’ as an event is not only absurd, immoral, unhealthy [but] capable of denigrating the image of Ekiti,” a statement from the culture ministry said.
Ekiti is closely associated with the recent craze as it was there that chef Dammy, while the steam was still rising in chef Baci’s kitchen and Guinness was yet to ratify her record, turned on her stove to try and outdo her fellow countrywoman.
The physical strain of some of the attempts, as seen with the masseuse, is also a slight cause for worry.
Tembu Ebere, who is crying non-stop for seven days, says he’s experienced serious health issues, telling the BBC he has had headaches, a swollen face, went partially blind for 45 minutes and has puffed eyes.
“I had to restrategise and reduce my wailing,” he said, adding that he was determined to see it through so is now sobbing towards his target, even though he has not applied to GWR so it won’t be an official record.
Many Nigerians who find the slew of attempts cringeworthy say Ms Baci unlocked Pandora’s box.
And it is not as though the country is short of record holders:
Tobi Amusan – Women’s 100 metres hurdles
Gbenga Ezekiel – Most skips in a minute on one leg
and my personal favourite:
Chinonso Eche, who holds records for: most consecutive football touches in one minute while balancing a football on the head; fastest time to 1,000 football touches while balancing a ball on the head; most football headers in a prone position in one minute and most football touches in a seated position while balancing a ball on the head in one minute.
But none of those generated as much buzz as chef Baci, who had a huge publicity machinery behind her.
“We did a lot of background work,” said Nene Bejide, head of the public relations firm that handled the branding.
It yielded results on the day – Ms Baci had a call from the former vice-president, a visit from the Lagos state governor, record holder Amusan stopped by, as did a never-ending stream of celebrities and well-wishers.
Aside from the stardom and fame that an attempt garners – seen through an instant swell of social media followers that elevates one to influencer status, a digital currency these days – there is also the personal enrichment.
Ms Baci has been given a year’s free travel by a Nigerian airline among other endorsements, chef Dammy received cash gifts. Others have openly solicited donations during their attempts.
“I had to do something that is basically out of the ordinary to put myself on the map, to put Nigeria on the map,” Ms Baci told the BBC after her feat.
Two persons have been remanded over drug trafficking.
The Jasikan Circuit Court remanded into Police custody the two, Raphael Agbele, the 42-year-old driver and Daniel Sakyi, a 26-year-old student for trafficking 410 parcels of narcotic drugs suspected to be Indian hemp.
They both pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The case was adjourned to July 25, 2023, for the suspects to reappear.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Seth Vincent Kpod, Prosecuting, told the Court presided over by Mr Alfred Kwabena Asiedu that the complainant was an Assemblyman.
He said on May 24, 2023, Agbele was in charge of a Benz bus container with registration number GT8496-N travelling from Hohoe to Dormabin.
ASP Kpodo said Sakyi who was also on the same vehicle, was the driver’s mate.
He said upon reaching the Asukawkaw Bridge, the vehicle veered off the road and got involved in an accident.
ASP Kpodo said the complainant, hearing of the accident, rushed to the scene and realised that there were sacks inside a secret compartment in the Benz bus which had broken down because of the accident.
He said several of the said sacks were also seen scattered on the road, which the Assemblyman quickly packed to prevent people from stealing them.
ASP Kpodo said the Assemblyman subsequently informed the Police about the incident.
He said the Police rushed to the scene and found 12 sacks and ten parcels of the wrapped Indian hemp that were retrieved from the accident vehicle.
ASP Kpodo said Police proceeded to the Asukawkaw Clinic and arrested the suspects who had been treated and discharged because of the accident.
He said the suspects in their investigation caution statements to police denied any wrongdoing.
ASP Kpodo said the suspects mentioned one Selasie Zigah of Hohoe as the owner of the vehicle who sent them to load charcoal at Dormabin and were not aware of the content of the vehicle.
He said efforts were being made to get the said owner of the vehicle arrested for investigations, but he has since gone into hiding.

At the 10th anniversary of this year’s Youth Xplo event, which was put on by the youth of Bethany Methodist Church, gospel legends Daughters of Glorious Jesus energised the crowd.
The Church Hall’s roof collapsed on Saturday, July 15, 2023 as a result of their mighty prayers, leaving the audience begging for more.
The Youth Xplo event has been dedicated to prison evangelism, serving as a testament to the unwavering belief of the church’s youth in the transformative power of love, forgiveness, and redemption.
Mr. Raymond Richard Bainson, the Chairman of the planning committee, expressed how they have witnessed numerous stories of hope emerging from the darkness of incarceration. Through reaching out to those marginalised by society in prisons such as Ankaful, Nsawam, Akuse, and the Bostal Home, shattered lives have been rebuilt with newfound purpose and faith.
The headline artists of the night, Daughters of Glorious Jesus, graced the stage with an exceptional live band performance of their timeless hit songs like “Bebre,” “Nea Y3 Huyi,” and “Mebo Wo Din Daa” among others. In addition to their captivating musical journey, they shared stories from their early days in Kumasi, in the Ashanti region, where they lived and began singing.
Before the legendary trio took the stage, the Voices of Praise from the Presbyterian Church in Abelenkpe, Accra, opened the night of music with a soothing performance that set the tone for an evening of dance and praise. Their rendition of old gospel songs, including the popular “Obatanpa Wayayie nie” by gospel all-stars and songs by Yaw Sarpong, took the audience on a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
The Bethany Jewels from Bethany Methodist Church in Dzorwulu, then took over the stage with a powerful ministration, offering their own rendition of the popular songs “Way3 me yie” by Piesie Esther and “Aseda” by Nacee, which have taken the nation by storm.
Yahwehson, a solo gospel artist, brought a reggae flavor to his ministration, captivating the audience with his unique style. Cheers and loud applause filled the hall as he concluded his performance, leading the patrons into a powerful prayer session.
The Emerald of Praise did not disaapoint. Their amazing performance kept patrons on their feet to dance the night away.
The Youth Xplo is an annual event organised by the youth of Bethany Methodist Church with the goal of drawing souls to Christ through evangelism and music. This year’s edition marked a significant milestone as they celebrated 10 years of impactful ministry and spreading the message of love and redemption to those in need.

The top commander of Ukraine has hinted that Ukrainian-made weapons may soon be used in strikes against Russian territory.
General Valery Zaluzhny, commander in chief of Ukraine, recently spoke with the Washington Post. In the interview, he defended his army’s ability to launch attacks against Russian territory using homegrown weapons and lamented the red lines that the AFU’s western partners had placed on it.
Why do I need permission to act on enemy land in order to save my people? He informed the WP.
‘For some reason, I have to think that I’m not allowed to do anything there. Why? Because Putin will … use nuclear weapons? The kids who are dying don’t care.’
One of the key conditions imposed on Ukraine by its western allies when providing them with arms was that Kyiv doesn’t use their weaponry to strike targets inside Russia due to fears of further escalation.
To date, despite a number of strikes taking place on Russian territory, Kyiv has rarely claimed responsibility for the attacks.
But according to Zaluzhny, this could soon change.
‘If our partners are afraid to use their weapons, we will kill with our own. But only as much as is necessary.’
He added: ‘This is our problem, and it is up to us to decide how to kill this enemy. It is possible and necessary to kill on its territory in a war.’
Despite being told by allies that they have enough heavy weapons to conduct their counteroffensive, Zaluzhny said Ukraine still lacks the necessary resources to liberate all the occupied territories and minimise casualties.
The general criticised those who say Ukraine doesn’t need F-16 fighter jets, and said that Kyiv’s Western allies would never fight like this.
Zaluzhny also reiterated Ukraine’s goal to liberate Russian-occupied Crimea despite concerns over Putin’s potential response voiced by some Western officials.
‘As soon as I have the means, I’ll do something. I don’t give a damn — nobody will stop me,’ he said.
Elsewhere in the interview, the army commander claimed to ‘eagerly’ read everything written by Russia’s top general Valerey Gerasmiov, which he described as ‘very, very interesting’, before lamenting the fact that ‘he hasn’t published anything lately’.
‘He is an enemy — an enemy who is very smart,’ Zaluzhny said.
‘Smart and therefore devious. He is still strong. So you have to respect him as such and look for ways to kill him. Because that is the only way to win.’
