  • Only 1 NPP MP stood firm in drafting anti-LGBTQ+ bill – Sam George

Only 1 NPP MP stood firm in drafting anti-LGBTQ+ bill – Sam George

Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George, has revealed that out of the three New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs who initially expressed support for the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, only one remained committed to the drafting of the bill.

Speaking in an interview on Neat FM on Thursday, July 6, 2023, Sam George said that the NPP MP who stayed loyal to the course was the MP for Assin South and Deputy Minister for Education, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour.

According to him, the other NPP MPs who were initially sponsoring the bill failed to attend meetings to draft the bill and even missed the final presentation of the bill to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, because of the pressures they were under.

The MP made these remarks while reacting to a statement by Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, the MP for Asante Akim, who was part of the NPP MPs initially sponsoring the anti-LGBTQI bill, that he was not present for the presentation of the bill because he was busy.

“He had sixteen meetings to put together the bill with the coalition. Ask him (Andy Appiah) Kubi whether he attended any of these meetings. Every time, they have an excuse to give, even on the day of the presentation they want to give an excuse.

“If today all of them are now on board, they are welcome. But I would continue to celebrate Honourable Ntim Fordjour because on that day (the day of the presentation of the bill) we knew the pressure that he came under but he said he was a priest and he believed it was the right thing to do,” Sam George said.

He insisted that Andy Appiah and all the other sponsors of the bill were aware of the day it was being presented but he failed to show up.

The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021, popularly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, was sponsored by Sam George (NDC MP), Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah (NDC MP), Della Adjoa Sowah (NDC MP), Rev Ntim Fordjour (NPP MP), Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini (NDC MP), Rita Naa Odoley Ntso (NDC MP) and Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor (NDC MP).

The names of the two other NPP MPs who were initially supporting the bill did not appear on the final report of the bill by the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of the House.

Parliament on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, adopted a motion to approve the bill.

  • Prophetess and evangelist jailed 11 years for stealing GHC265k from ill 72-year-old lecturer

Prophetess and evangelist jailed 11 years for stealing GHC265k from ill 72-year-old lecturer

An Evangelist and Prophetess have been handed an 11-year prison sentence for their involvement in the theft of GHC265,000 from the bank account of a 72-year-old retired lecturer.

The sentencing has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the betrayal of trust and the consequences of financial exploitation against vulnerable individuals.

As reported by DailyGuide on July 6, 2023, two individuals identified as Samuel Kwesi Tsogbe, a 33-year-old evangelist, and Esther Christ, a 63-year-old prophetess, both self-ordained pastors of Cornerstone Ministry International, have been accused of embezzling funds from the bank account of a sick and bedridden 72-year-old lecturer.

The pair allegedly siphoned a substantial amount of money from the lecturer’s account, causing widespread outrage and raising concerns about financial exploitation.

After stealing the money, Tsogbe and Christ opened an account with another bank and channeled the stolen funds into the said account.

The two were charged with stealing.

The court presided over by Mrs. Sedinam Awo Balokah, convicted the accused persons on their own pleas as they both pleaded guilty to the offence.

According to the prosecuting officer, Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, who presented the fact brief to the court, indicated that, the persons travelled from Kpando to Accra to offer prayers for the bedridden lecturer.

It was during their stay at the lecturer’s house that they committed the crime.

After which they sent away the lecturer’s house help, whom they claimed was the cause of the victim’s predicament.

The prosecutor named Margaret Dzandu, a teacher and the victim’s niece who lives in Kpando in the Volta Region, as the complainant, while the victim is a retiree who lives in Danfa in the Greater Accra Region.

According to the persecuting officer, the accused persuaded the complainant in 2022 that they had a revelation about her uncle’s situation and convinced her to send them to his residence to pray for the victim.

The prosecution said the accused persons occupied the home of the victim for about five months.

While there, they sacked the housekeeper and engaged a new house help from Kpando.

On May 4, 2022, Evangelist Tsogbe and Prophetess Esther took the victim to NIB bank, to withdraw GH200,000 from his account. They also stole the victim’s ATM card and cheque book from the National Investment Bank (NIB) after he did the withdrawal.

The prosecution stated that on September 22, 2022, they began transferring funds from the victim’s NIB account to Tsogbe’s account until June 2, 2023.

Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo added that the complainant visited the victim who needed money in June 2023. During a search of the house, the victim’s ATM card and cheque book were not found.

It said the complainant’s preliminary investigations showed that the accused persons had stolen her uncle’s ATM card and cheque book.

It added that the complainant reported the matter to the police at Kpando and an extract was given to her to send to the police at Ayi Mensah.

When the accused were arrested by police, they admitted to stealing the victims’ ATM card and cheque book, which were recovered.

According to police investigations, the accused purchased a tipper truck, a Hyundai Mighty 2 vehicle, and rented a shop in the Oti Region.

The Evangelist Samuel Kwesi Tsogbe pleaded with the court to forgive him as he did not know his action would turn out this way.

“I apologise for this; have learnt my lesson,” he said.

Esther Christ, the Prophetess, also told the court that she was a foreigner who came to Ghana through another prophet.
“I sincerely apologize,” Esther told the court.

The judge, Sedinam Awo Balokah, described the accused persons conduct as “unpalatable”.

The report added that the court was not impressed at all with the way people were using spirituality to exploit the vulnerable, hence handing down a deterrent sentence.

It ordered the seizure of items purchased and owned by the accused persons.

The court also froze the account of Tsogbe and restrained him or other persons from withdrawing money from the said account.

The two were served with a total jail term of 11 years. Samuel Kwesi Tsogbe, the evangelist was sentenced to six years imprisonment, while Esther Christ was sentenced to five years imprisonment.

  • Darius Daulton faces backlash for shaming Keke Palmer for her outfit in public

Darius Daulton faces backlash for shaming Keke Palmer for her outfit in public

Darius Daulton, the partner of well-known Hollywood actress Keke Palmer, has recently found himself at the centre of a contentious online argument.

Netizens expressed their ire after Daulton took to Twitter to publicly criticize Palmer’s choice of attire during a visit to Usher’s concert.

The actress donned a black-themed sheer body-hugging dress with an inner body suit. The incident has ignited a broader discussion about gender roles, respect, and the dynamics of their relationship.

Social media platforms erupted with criticism directed at Darius Daulton, who faced heavy backlash for rebuking his partner on a public forum. Many users accused him of attempting to assert dominance and control rather than engaging in a constructive dialogue.

A significant portion of netizens argued that such matters should be addressed privately, highlighting the importance of respect and mutual support in a relationship.

However, the controversy surrounding Daulton did not stop there. Netizens went the extra mile to uncover his past tweets, revealing a concerning pattern of misogynistic and patriarchal attitudes. These unearthed posts further fueled the already heated discussion, as users questioned the true nature of Daulton’s character and its impact on his relationship with Palmer.

Taking their curiosity to the next level, internet sleuths diligently searched for information on Darius Daulton’s professional life and financial standing. The search yielded surprising results, with netizens sharing details about his net worth and occupation. This unexpected twist added a layer of pettiness to the already contentious situation, intensifying the online debate.

While the social media storm continues to rage, the incident has also sparked important conversations about power dynamics within relationships, the significance of communication and respect, and the consequences of airing personal grievances in a public space. As the drama unfolds, observers are left wondering how Keke Palmer will respond and whether this controversy will have long-lasting effects on their partnership.

As netizens express their opinions and emotions, this controversy surrounding Darius Daulton serves as a reminder that even public figures’ personal lives are subject to scrutiny and evaluation in the age of social media. The incident emphasizes the need for empathy, understanding, and healthy communication in relationships, irrespective of societal status or public recognition.

While the outcome of this controversy remains uncertain, one thing is clear: the story of Keke Palmer and Darius Daulton has ignited a fierce debate that delves into broader societal issues, prompting us to reflect on our own values, relationships, and the impact of social media on our lives.

  • Nigeria’s Ekiti govt bans proposed 72-hour kissing marathon for Guinness World Records

Nigeria’s Ekiti govt bans proposed 72-hour kissing marathon for Guinness World Records

The Ekiti State Government has announced a ban on the planned three-day kissing marathon to set the Guinness World Record in the state.

This follows the announcement on social media by Sugartee, a musician from Nigeria, that he will be hosting the proposed 72-hour kissing marathon intended to break the current Guinness World from Friday, July 7 to Sunday, July 10.

He was hoping to break the current record of 58 hours, 35 minutes, 58 seconds set by a Thai couple, Ekkachai and Lakasan Tiranarat, in 2022 on Valentine’s Day.

However, the Ekiti government on hearing the news released a statement banning the event calling it absurd, unhealthy and immoral.

The statement signed by the state tourism director, Adebanji Adelusi, noted that allowing the challenge to proceed would denigrate the image of the state.

“It is a programme that runs counter to the values of the people of the state and is therefore capable of plunging our Youths morally backwards. Given the preceding, the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism prohibits hosting such an event or any other events like it in any facility that wishes to continue to operate lawfully in Ekiti State,” parts of the statement read.

“To the above, you are requested to convey the content of this Notice to the members of Ekiti State Hoteliers’ Association to effectively monitor their outlets against being used negatively to cause embarrassment to the Government and People of Ekiti State.”

Meanwhile, the singer Sugartee told Premium Times Nigeria following the ban that he had no intentions of actually hosting the event but only wanted to gain attention with his post.

He explained that previously he had released a song for the state and the government had reacted to it making promises of support but “nothing came out of it.”

Sugartee added that he is thankful for this opportunity which he says has gained him a lot of attention.

“It was all a publicity stunt from the onset. The ban is what is giving people awareness about the name Sugartee right now. At least more people will get to know I’m a good artiste who makes beautiful songs, and that’s a win for me,” he said.

18-year-old killer sentenced to 100 years in prison

An 18-year-old murderer who severely beat his 8-month-old newborn daughter to the point that her skull was completely fractured received a 100-year sentence.

After admitting to killing newborn Raija Straight in July 2018 in Des Moines, Iowa, Jayden Straight was given the life sentence on Friday.

At the time of the murder, the murderer, who was 17 years old, left his kid with severe internal wounds, including multiple skull fractures, broken ribs, a burst spleen, and significant retinal haemorrhaging.

Straight’s partner Ri Bambino left him in the care of their tiny daughter on the afternoon she was fatally injured to go and run errands.

Bambino returned to find her baby horrifically injured, with Straight subsequently going on the run.

After handing himself in the next day, he was unable to provide any explanation for the wounds inflicted on Raija, and has since failed to provide any motive for his daughter’s death.

A doctor who treated the baby in hospital before she died said the injuries were ‘from a deliberate assault and could not be explained as unintentional or accidental.’

Are there great white sharks in the UK? Experts say there soon could be

The Des Moines Register reported that Straight was jailed for 50 years for second-degree murder.

He was handed a further five decade-long sentences for three counts of willful injury and two counts of child endangerment resulting in serious injury.

All six sentences will run consecutively, meaning Straight will not be released from jail before 2119.

Paying tribute to Raija, the infant’s great-grandma Robin Head said: ‘When I saw this child’s face and what she has brought to me for the last eight months of her life.

‘I can’t never explain that feeling of holding her, laughing with her, touching her, walking with her, crawling with her.’

A clam is a type of shellfish. Clams can be found in saltwater and freshwater. This is a common usage term, and so includes quite a variety of shellfish. Clams are a fairly common form of bivalve, therefore making it part of the phylum Mollusc. There are many clams in the ocean, but some can also be found in some lakes, streams, and rivers.

    1. Woman arrested after 8-year-old girl dies in a car crash into Wimbledon

Woman arrested after 8-year-old girl dies in a car crash into Wimbledon

After a car in London collided with a school building, an 8-year-old child died.

Just before 10am, a Land Rover struck a wall at The Study Preparatory School on Camp Road in Wimbledon.

Pictorial evidence from the site suggests that the kids were taking part in an end-of-term outdoor activity since a picnic mat and table were set up outside the school.

Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland confirmed the child’s death, adding: ‘This is tragic news and our thoughts are with the girl’s family and friends, and everyone affected today.

‘We remain at the scene and are continuing our investigation into the full circumstances of the incident.’

The Camp Road site of the school caters for younger children between the ages of four and eight.

For many in the area – described as being like a ‘village’ by locals – the tragedy has left them ‘shaken’.

    2. Fame and attention were suffocating me – Lawyer Nti

Fame and attention were suffocating me – Lawyer Nti

Richmond Xavier Amoakoh, better known by his stage name Lawyer Nti, said he once found fame to be “strangling” even though he had yearned and prayed for it.

Talking about some of the effects of being called a celebrity on Class FM, he said “If you had asked me this a few years ago, I would have said a few things,” he answered.

However, “today,” he added, “I don’t think I can say anything.”

Currently, “the things I probably don’t like about this [being popular], in a way, helps me to be a better person,” he remarked.

“This is how it is. I am doing my work, hoping that people get to see it and appreciate me for it,” he said. “I’m getting that and then now I feel, you [members of the public] are in my business too much.”

The irony of it all is not lost on the Kejetia vs Makola hit TV series star.

“But I put myself out there,” he said. “I was hoping – years ago, when we were doing the stage plays and all, I was hoping that one of them would blow up [be massively successful]. It happen[ed], and because I wasn’t prepared for this, because it was, boom!, because nothing really can prepare you for something like this, I felt – it was strangling at a point.”

The fame and attention “was suffocating,” he stressed.

On a regular day “if I’m walking along the street,” he said, “naturally,” he wants to be that “normal person” but the contrary happens as “some of the people” point at him asking their friends to come have a look.

Though this is uncomfortable, he said having celebrity is something he once “prayed” and “hoped for” and “God listened to my prayers and he gave it to me”.

“Not just that,” he said, noting that people react how they do in his presence because “they love me, they love what I do, they love the effect I have on them, and so they’re appreciating me.”

The University of Ghana, Legon, School of Performing Arts graduate expressed his gladness for the fact that when people see him and his craft, irrespective of their circumstances, whether “broke or brokenhearted,” they laugh and are made happy.

Bemoaning that some fans “don’t have boundaries” and get oddly touchy, he remarked: “it’s all out of love”.

The scariest part of stardom, Lawyer Nti also said, is “people expecting you to live in a certain kind of way”.

He said it is worse when “you know that it is not within your means.”

Reacting to host Nana Kwesi Asare’s observation that 2017 was his peak, he said, “Yes, I was everywhere, I had a lot of opportunities to make all the money, but yeah, some of them I couldn’t [utilise].”

He explained: “I can’t just turn my life upside down to please everyone because you want me to live a certain kind of way, you want me to be a certain kind of person…”

He noted that some people found his on-screen and off-screen personas contradictory.

“…you want me to see you and go crazy, you know, fool around,” he said. “So people see me and they are like: ‘Ah, on TV you’re like this but [in person] you’re quiet.”

For him, this is “the big thing I didn’t like” about being a popular entertainment or public figure.

He said the ordinary Richmond Xavier Amoakoh is “quiet, in-door, very few friends, reserved, shy,” which is “totally opposite” the Lawyer Nti character he is famed for.

He stressed that the two are worlds apart.

He said he has been criticised for wearing caps, and during the pandemic, nose masks, because some people said he was disguising himself.

Meanwhile, “the person too was wearing a nose mask,” he jokingly observed.

Noting that the public reaction anytime he is seen outside “was scary,” he said it prompted his retreat to “take care of myself”.

“I had to take time, away from all that, to work on myself,” he said.

So, between 2017 and 2020, “I had given so much and pretended to be the person they wanted me to be – a lot of the times – few times, I gave them [the real] me and most people didn’t like it – but then, I felt, I had missed out on me, so I needed to step back, and go back to myself, reconnect with myself and with God too, and it has done great [things] for me,” he narrated.

He said he loves “the way that I have matured” and “the growth” which, to him, is part of the journey and makes it all complete.

The Study Preparatory School, which costs £16,000 a year to attend, offers education for girls aged four to 11-years-old.

Scotland Yard said in a statement earlier: ‘Officers remain at the scene of a serious collision at a primary school in Wimbledon.

‘Police were called at 09:54hrs on Thursday July 6 to reports that a car collided with a building at the school in Camp Road.

‘Officers attended, along with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance.

‘At this time nine people are reported injured, these include two adults and seven children. We await further updates on their conditions.’

The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene, the force added. There have been no arrests.

The Study is located less than a mile from where the Wimbledon Tournament is taking place.

Stephen Hammond, the Conservative MP for Wimbledon, described the crash as an ‘Extraordinarily distressing and tragic incident on the last day of term… there has actually been a major incident declared.

‘The air ambulance, the ambulance, the fire services, and the police are all in attendance.’

Speaking to BBC News, Mr Hammond added: ‘The size of the response tells you how serious the incident is and there are a number of casualties, and I understand that a number of those are being treated as critical.’

Fire services have also sent several services to the scene, with two engines and two rescue units outside the school.

Video from the scene shows a picnic display outside the school, with a table and yellow picnic blanket laid out on the grass.

Part of a nearby fence seems to be missing in the footage.

In a tweet earlier, the Met said: ‘Officers are responding to an incident at a primary school in Camp Road, Wimbledon.

‘We were called at 09:54hrs to reports that a car collided with a building at the school. Several people are being treated at the scene.

‘We will share further updates when we can.’

The London Ambulance Service has been contacted by Metro.co.uk for comment and, like the Met, said further updates would be available shortly.

Cllr Max Austin, who represents the Wimbledon Village ward, posted on Twitter: ‘Thank you to emergency services for attending. I hope all receiving treatment make a speedy recovery.’

People have been told to avoid the area to allow emergency services to access the scene.

    5. MPs warn government’s lack of preparation for potential pandemics

MPs warn government’s lack of preparation for potential pandemics

Ineffective personal protective equipment (PPE) cost the taxpayers billions of pounds, and stockpile planning for potential pandemics is alarmingly lacking.

The grim warning comes from the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), whose report also chastised the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) for ‘absolutely astounding’ accounting flaws.

Because to these shortcomings, the NHS Test and Trace inventory worth £3.3 billion could not be properly identified by financial records.

The government has ‘written off’ £14.9 billion of inventory in the last two years – nearly £10 billion of this was unusable or unneeded PPE, Covid medicines and vaccines.

The department still pays large amounts to store and dispose of the kit, and it’s estimated this will cost £319 million over the next few years.

It’s also not possible to do a stocktake of existing PPE, the report found, as it would cost £70 million to move and open inaccessible storage containers.

The report warns healthcare workers could be exposed to PPE shortages in future as there isn’t a clear plan for a national emergency stockpile.

PAC chair Dame Meg Hillier said: ‘The UKHSA was set up with great fanfare in 2021, and rightly so given the significance of its role in leading protection against threats to our nation’s health.

‘It is completely staggering, then, that an organisation envisaged as a foundation stone of our collective security was established with a leadership hamstrung by a lack of formal governance, and financial controls so poor that billions of pounds in NHS Test and Trace inventory can no longer be properly accounted for.

‘It is greatly alarming that there is no clear plan from the government for an emergency stockpile of vaccines, medicines and PPE.

‘Three years after the start of the pandemic, the government still has no proper controls over the PPE stocks it already has.

‘This could leave front-line workers exposed in the future to shortages similar to those faced in 2020.

‘For the government not to make serious preparations for any future pandemic would be utterly inexcusable.’

UKHSA was set up to replace Public Health England in 2021, but the committee found it had ‘financial controls so poor’ it was ‘unable to prepare auditable accounts’.

The report also criticised the appointment of Dame Jenny Harries as its chief executive, as they say she had ‘no previous technical experience in elements of running a complex organisation’, leading to ‘inadequate scrutiny’.

A government spokesperson said: ‘In the face of an unprecedented pandemic, we had to compete in an overheated global market to procure items to protect the public, frontline health and care workers and our NHS.

‘We were the first country in the world to deploy an approved Covid vaccine, with 144 million doses administered, and we have delivered over 25 billion items of PPE to the front line.

‘Buying vital Covid vaccines and medicines saved countless lives and kept NHS and care staff safe.’

Dame Jenny said: ‘We have always taken our accounts and financial controls very seriously.

‘The UKHSA was created in unprecedented circumstances when tackling Covid was our first priority, and we inherited significant pre-existing accounts challenges.

‘We have already instituted strong governance arrangements in a hugely complex organisation at the earliest opportunity.

‘This progress means our organisation is now substantially different in terms of stability, governance and financial controls.

‘We are working with DHSC to ensure the robustness of our accounts is recognised both now and for the future.

‘Despite these inherited financial challenges, the UKHSA continues to fulfil its priority remit – to protect lives.’

Minority fulfills threat to boycott parliament over Gyakye Quayson criminal trail

The Minority in Parliament has chosen to refrain from engaging in parliamentary activities today in response to the ongoing court proceedings regarding the Assin North criminal case.

In a show of solidarity, the entire Minority caucus have accompanied Mr. Quayson to court.

On Tuesday the minority took a firm stance to abstain from participating in parliamentary business on days when Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson, is scheduled to appear in court for an ongoing criminal case.

The Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson announced that the entire Minority caucus will accompany Mr. Quayson to court, expressing their disapproval of what they perceive as ongoing persecution against him.

During a press briefing, Mr. Forson emphasized the Minority’s united front, stating, “We wish to serve notice that the entire Minority will accompany our colleague today and any other days that he is to appear in court. We are solidarizing with our colleague, and we will not participate in the business of the House anytime our colleague is in court, and we will be withdrawing from the chamber after this ceremony if the court processes happen today.”

The decision to abstain from parliamentary proceedings on court days is a clear statement of support for Mr. Quayson and a demonstration against what the Minority considers unjust treatment.

Furthermore, Ato Forson highlighted the significance of Mr. Quayson’s victory in the Assin North constituency, stating, “The people of Assin North have sent a clear message to all politicians and the government of the day especially, that they cannot be lured with money, not be intimidated by threats. It is the same message that Ghanaians are sending to us that in the year 2024, they will exercise their franchise based on their conscience, and no amount of threats will dissuade them from voting out the administration that we are witnessing.”

James Gyakye Quayson was officially inaugurated into Parliament after emerging victorious in the Assin North by-election, which took place on June 27, 2023. The Electoral Commission announced that Quayson garnered an impressive 57.56% of the total votes cast, amounting to 17,245 votes. His closest competitor, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 12,630 votes, representing 42.15% of the votes.

The swearing-in ceremony of the Assin North MP-elect was conducted by the esteemed Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, solidifying James Gyakye Quayson’s position as the official representative of th constituency.

The Assin North by-election was prompted by a legal dispute regarding Quayson’s eligibility to hold office due to concerns over his dual citizenship. However, with his resounding victory in the by-election and now taking the oath of allegiance, Quayson has overcome these challenges to assume his rightful place in Parliament.

Apagyahene accuses govt of sabotaging him because he is NDC

Chief of Amoah Apagya in the Afigya Kwabere South District of the Ashanti Region, Apagyahene Nana Owusu Peprah II, has accused government of sabotaging his community in terms of development over claims he supports the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The Chief has also accused the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government of tagging him as a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for which reason no development comes to the area.

According to him, his community Apagya has been deprived of development because politicians in the region say he is a member of the NDC so they are not going to make his people enjoy their share of the national cake.

“In my own hometown Mpintin where I was born, the community is lit beautifully. They distributed street lights in all communities around but they said Nana is an NDC so they won’t give him some”, Nana Owusu Preprah II lamented

“They lied to me that, they ignored my community because the road is not tarred but let me ask, are the roads in those communities with street lights tarred? They just hate me. Anytime I ask for the developmental project they don’t give me, but God is on my side”, he added.

Nana Owusu Preprah II vented his frustrations days ago while addressing people of his community at a ceremony held to commission a newly constructed water project.

He earnestly pleaded with the authorities of the Afigya Kwabere South District to prioritize the improvement of the road connecting Kodie, Apagya, and nearby communities, urging them to refrain from engaging in political games.

My cook-a-thon was approved by Guinness World Records – Chef Deo

Adeola Adeyeye, a 26-year-old chef from Ondo, claims that Guinness World Records (GWR) has recognised her 150-hour cooking streak.

At 93 hours and 11 minutes, Hilda Baci presently holds the record for the longest cook-a-thon.

In order to start her cook-a-thon, Chef Deo asked GWR for permission, which according to her was granted.

Chef Deo’s cook-a-thon is being held by the Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo Local Government in Ondo State and will last from Monday, June 30 to Thursday, July 6, 2023.

Ayotunde Fagbamiye, manager of Chef Deo, acknowledged GWR’s endorsement of the endeavour and emphasized her resolve and eagerness to pull off the accomplishment and shatter the record for a cook-a-thon.

“Her passion and determination are evident, and I am confident she will successfully reach the end of this journey.”

    11. Kpessa-Whyte pushes for a system in Ghana that allows for removal of incompetent govt before election

Kpessa-Whyte pushes for a system in Ghana that allows for removal of incompetent govt before election

A research fellow at the Institute of African Studies (IAS) in the University of Ghana, Prof. Michael Kpessa-Whyte, has called for a modification of Ghana’s Constitution to enable swift dismissal of underperforming governments.

In a tweet shared on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, Dr Kpessa-Whyte said that waiting to change an incompetent government after four is too long a time and costly.

He suggested that a democratic system that allows non-performing presidents to be removed before elections would save the country a lot of resources.

“Ghana needs a constitutional provision to allow “we the people” to cut short the incompetence of any government through a democratic RECALL so that we can collectively avoid burden of waiting and wasting away under a locked-in election cycle,” the academic wrote.

The Constitution of Ghana allows for a change in government after every four years through presidential elections.

Also, presidents are allowed to serve for only two terms. Each term is made up of four years, meaning presidents can serve for a maximum of 8 years.

    12. July 4 emerges as world’s hottest day on earth

July 4 emerges as world’s hottest day on earth

The world temperature record was broken for the second day in a row on Tuesday, July 4, but experts and data have warned that the warmest days of the year are still to come and will eventually be the warmest days ever recorded.

According to information gathered by the US National Centres for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), the average global air temperature on Tuesday was 17.18°C (62.9°F), breaking the previous high of 17.01°C set on Monday.

Till the start of this week, the hottest day ever recorded was in 2016 when the last El Nino global weather event had occurred and the global average temperature had reached 16.92ºC.

The UN’s weather body World Meteorological Organisation on Tuesday confirmed the return of El Nino. According to the predictions of experts, combined with the increased heat due to anthropogenic global heating, the climatic conditions would lead to more record-breaking temperatures.

“El Niño hasn’t peaked yet and summer is still in full swing in the northern hemisphere, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the record is broken again in the coming days or weeks,” stated Dr Paulo Ceppi, who is a lecturer in climate science at the Grantham Institute, Imperial College London.

Dr Karsten Haustein, a research fellow in atmospheric radiation at Leipzig University, said, “The coming days will probably see a small downturn, but since the annual global temperature maximum is at the end of July, more days are likely to be warmer than yesterday (given that El Niño is now pretty much in full swing). Chances are that the month of July will be the warmest ever, and with it the hottest month ever … ‘ever’ meaning since the Eemian, which is indeed some 120,000 years ago.”

The Climate Reanalyzer service, which was hosted by the University of Maine’s Climate Change Institute, reported the record-breaking mean temperature. It used the data from the climate forecast system of NCEP to give a time series of daily mean two-metre air temperature, on the basis of readings from air balloon, surface and satellite observations.

      World faces extreme heatwave

Extreme heatwave is being faced by various regions of the world. On Monday, the Met Office said that the United Kingdom battled its hottest-ever June. In recent weeks, the southern US has been sweltering due to intense heat, as temperatures shot up on Tuesday (July 4).

“The temperatures creating these record-breaking days match exactly expectations under human-caused climate change,” stated Ilan Kelman, a professor of disasters and health at University College London’s Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction.

“As the rising temperatures drive worsening heatwaves, including terrible humidity, we expect to see substantial increases in related deaths. Many people cannot afford indoor cooling and some people must be outside for work. The combination of heat and humidity then becomes the silent killer, since we often do not realise how many people are in lethal difficulty, especially when it does not cool down at night,” he added.

July 4th shootings in New York: 2 dead, 11 injured

Two people were killed and 11 others were injured in a string of shootings that occurred in New York City on July 4th evening.

Among the victims of Wednesday’s tragic shootings were an 18-year-old man and a 19-year-old man, both fatally shot on Morris Avenue in The Bronx locality.

In New York City, the level-four mobilisation plan was activated after five shootings were reported from the Bronx locality alone.

In the level-four mobilisation plan, one patrol car is deployed in each of the city’s 77 precincts to the borough, meaning an intensified police presence.

Mayor Eric Adams arrived at the scene to support the ongoing police investigation, New York Post reported.

New York 4th of July shooting: Series of violence

The wave of violence commenced around 12:40 AM when a 34-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to his leg in the Throggs Neck area of The Bronx. Despite his injuries, he managed to reach Westchester Square Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Approximately 20 minutes later, a 36-year-old man was shot in the leg and buttocks in the same neighbourhood. Initially, he sought medical assistance at Montefiore Medical Center but was subsequently transferred to Jacobi Medical Center, also in stable condition, New York Post reported.

In Brownsville, Brooklyn, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a 20-year-old girl sustained a gunshot wound at the intersection of Bristol Street and Livonia Avenue.

She was transported to Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, where her condition was reported as stable. The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation.

Savor Gyakye Quayson’s triumph for the time being – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu to NDC

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Major Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has cautioned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to excessively rejoice over the success of James Gyakye Quayson, their elected representative for Assin North.

During his address in parliament on Tuesday, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who represents Suame in Parliament, expressed the belief that the jubilation of the NDC would be of brief duration, according to their party’s perspective.

He suggested that the fate of Quayson is now in the hands of the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Dame.

“NDC wants to believe that this is a peak victory that would hurt the bride of the NPP… we the parliamentary group of the NPP believe that this is a momentary victory of phantasmal character that certainly may not last.

“But Mr Speaker that is the choice of the people Assin North and everybody must respect that whiles it last. The rest of it is in the hands of the attorney general.

“While he remains here, we can only embrace him as a Member of Parliament… whiles it last,” he said.

James Gyakye Quayson won the Assin North by-election on June 27, 2023, after the seat was declared vacant due to his removal from parliament.

The Supreme Court of Ghana, on May 17, 2023, ordered the Parliament of Ghana to expunge the name of James Gyakye Quayson as a Member of Parliament (MP).

But there is still one case the former MP has to face in court after the Office of the Attorney General accused him of deceiving public officers to acquire state documents.

On February 12, 2022, the State charged James Gyakye Quayson with five counts; deceit of a public officer, forgery of a passport, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury, and false declaration.

Many notable Ghanaians across the political divide have called on the attorney general to drop the case against but he has described the calls as interference in justice delivery.

    15. Akatsi South MP predicts extinction of LGBTQ+ nations within 50 years

Akatsi South MP predicts extinction of LGBTQ+ nations within 50 years

Akatsi South MP, Bernard Ahiafor, has made a projection that nations involved in LGBTQ+ practices will cease to exist within the upcoming 50 years.

The MP made this statement during the second reading and debate of the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill before the Parliament House.

Bernard Ahiafor explained that LGBTQ+ countries will be extinct because they are disobeying the law of procreation and unless they ask for labour force from other countries, they will die out.

“Countries practicing LGBTQ+ activity, I give them 50 years by prophecy they will be extinct on earth. Most of those countries will no longer exist on earth, very soon they may even have to be taking labour force from countries not practicing LGBTQ+ activity and that is not the way we are to go,” he said.

The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021 has been a topic of intense debate in the country, with proponents arguing that it is necessary to safeguard Ghanaian cultural values and norms.

The bill seeks to criminalise LGBTQ+ activities and impose stringent penalties for offenders.

However, there are critics of the bill who argue that it infringes upon the fundamental human rights of individuals and promotes discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Teen who vanished for eight years ‘locked up, drugged, and abused by mum’ – Police

An adolescent boy who was allegedly found after being gone for eight years claims that his mother locked him up in his own house.

This week, it was revealed that Rudolph ‘Rudy’ Farias IV, who had been missing for eight years while walking his dogs, had been located.

He was 17 years old when he went missing on March 6, 2015, but the Texas Centre for the Missing revealed on Sunday that he had been recovered safe.

Mr Farias has now spoken to Houston police officers as well as community activist Quanell X, the MailOnline reports, and he alleges that his mother who reported him missing actually kept him locked up at home for the last eight years.

Mother Janie Santana said it was a miracle her missing son had been found, and claimed he was ‘non verbal’.

However Mr Farias has now accused her of holding him captive, drugging and sexually abusing him.

Neighbours have also said he was never missing, adding they saw him regularly.

Mr Farias and Ms Santana both met with Houston Police on Wednesday.

A spokesman for the force said: ‘Detectives with our missing persons unit interviewed Mr Rudy Farias, 25, and his mother today.

‘While there are reports of some of the content of the interviews being released, our detectives are not in a position at this time to discuss specifics of the interviews or if the content being released is entirely factual.’

The spokesman added a news conference will be held on Thursday in order to provide more details.

Quanell X attended the meeting as a mediator between the family and police, and told journalists afterwards that Mr Farias asked to speak to him privately.

After being separated from his mother, Mr Farias reportedly said he never went missing, and for the last years his mother has been making him share a bed with her and ‘making him play daddy’.

Mr Farias’ father, Houston police officer Rudolph Farias III, died by suicide in 2014.

When asked for details about the sexual assault claims, Quanell said he did not want to go into details about the ‘kissing.’

After he was asked again, he replied: ‘Let me ask you a question – if your mother is tongue kissing you in the bed with her naked, what the h*** is that? This is sick.’

Mr Farias allegedly said police found him last week because he stole his mother’s car to get away from her.

When asked why he ran away, Mr Farias allegedly said: ‘I was tired of living like a slave.’

A GoFundMe account set up by Ms Santana to cover Mr Farias’s medical costs has since been deleted.

NPP MP advocates for dual citizens’ right to run for Parliament as MPs

Mpraeso’s Member of Parliament, Davis Ansah Opoku, has expressed his opinion that individuals holding dual citizenship should have the opportunity to participate in parliamentary elections in Ghana.

In his view, it is illogical that individuals with dual citizenship can occupy significant governmental roles, yet they are barred from pursuing membership in Parliament.

During an interview with JoyNews on Tuesday, Davis Opoku highlighted that even in developed nations such as the United Kingdom, lawmakers are permitted to possess dual citizenship.

“For me, I support and I’m pushing for dual citizens to sit in parliament. So, this whole thing of somebody holding a citizenship of another country… that person should not be denied the opportunity to contribute to the development of our country,”

“Boris Johnson, he was the Prime Minister of the UK; whiles serving as PM, he was a US citizen as well. The Prime Minister of Canada holds a Canadian citizenship as well as a US citizenship. People’s allegiance to the state should not be questioned by the mere fact that they embarked on a trip to seek for greener pastures somewhere.

“If you look at the NCA (National Communication Authority) that is the nerve of our country; look at the National Health Insurance Authority that holds the health data of our country; these two institutions can be managed by people who hold dual citizenship. Why can’t such persons sit in parliament to pass laws,” he said.

The MP, therefore, called for an amendment of Ghana’s constitutes to allow Ghanaians who have other nationalities to contest to become MPs.

“The times when that law, that constitutional provision was made has changed, whether we like it or not,” he said.

He added that current issues surrounding the nationality of the Member of Parliament for Assin North, who has been accused by the state of lying about his dual nationality should serve as a wake-up call for all MPs.

Marijuana plants worth £130 million seized by police in UK

In Britain, more than 11,000 officers have started a war on narcotics that has resulted in the destruction of hundreds of cannabis fields.

Police have promised to put an end to a chain reaction of crime caused by “low-level” offenders.

Every police department in England, Wales, and Scotland participated in Operation Mille, the largest of its type, which resulted in the seizure of 200,000 cannabis plants as well as 15 to 20 firearms and more than 40 other offensive weapons.

Across June, more than 1,000 cannabis farms were raided by police across Britain, with plants worth £130 million seized and some 1,000 suspects arrested.

Operation Mille targeted what law enforcement believe is a cash cow for organised crime gangs who are also involved in other offences such as money laundering, Class A drug smuggling, and violence.

Steve Jupp, the National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for serious and organised crime, said: ‘We know that organised networks involved in cannabis production are also directly linked to an array of other serious criminality such as Class A drug importation, modern slavery and wider violence and exploitation.

‘This operation not only successfully disrupted a significant amount of criminal activity, but the intelligence gathered will also help inform future law enforcement across the country.

‘Cannabis-related crime is often thought to be ‘low level’; however, there are clear patterns around the exploitation and violence organised crime groups are using to protect their enterprises.

Operation Mille, the largest of its kind and one involving every police force in England, Wales and Scotland, saw 200,000 cannabis plants seized, along with 15 to 20 guns and more than 40 other offensive weapons. ‘We also frequently find that cannabis production is just one aspect of their criminal operations and that they are complicit in wider offending which blights our communities.’

Around 11,000 officers were involved in the crackdown, during which £650,000 in cash was also seized.

Large-scale industrial units are used for cannabis farms but also empty residential homes.

Police say the buildings can become dangerous as a result of fire risks, unlawful abstraction of electricity, fumes and water damage.

A major concern for cops up and down the country is the county lines system which exploits young people and, like cannabis dealing, is carried out in the shadow of even bigger criminal operations.

Teenagers are being offered phones, vapes and clothes to take up ‘business opportunities’ promoted on social media, it has previously been reported.

County lines networks often exploit vulnerable teens to take drugs from cities to rural customers via train.

The pandemic exacerbated the problem as children spent more time online, and county lines are springing up more frequently in rural areas where reductions in youth services and support have left young people without protection.

Search conducted for two women after 15-year-old knocked out and stripped naked

As reported by authorities, a 15-year-old boy was sexually attacked by two ladies as he was walking through the woods and was left unconscious.

Following the attack, police are looking for a 6ft 3in lady with red hair who has been dyed.

In addition, she had on pink Air Jordan sneakers, blue shorts, a black crop top and glasses.

The other woman is believed to have been 5ft 9 tall, had long white blonde hair, and a Merseyside accent.

Both looked to be between 18 and 20-years-old, the boy told detectives.

Following the attack last month in Burgess Hill, Sussex, the teen woke up to find himself without clothes and injuries to his head and body.

Detectives have urged anyone with information to come forward.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said: ‘Police are appealing for witnesses after a teenage boy reported being sexually assaulted by two women in Burgess Hill.

‘The 15-year-old reported walking along Cants Lane shortly before 6.15pm on Sunday, 4 June, then heading through a wooded area towards the World’s End area.

Yaw Dabo lashes out at one of his players for getting an eyebrow incision

Ghanaian actor and the proprietor of the prestigious Dabo Soccer Academy, Yaw Dabo has revealed the fundamental principles upheld at his renowned football institution. He highlighted the importance of discipline and the value of cultivating good manners among young players.

Dabo shared a notable incident from the academy that served as a prime example of their dedication to discipline. This incident showcased the academy’s commitment to fostering a strong moral foundation in addition to providing football training.

In an interview with Plus One TV, he narrated how one of the players had decided to undergo an eyebrow incision, a popular fashion trend, but the action was met with swift disciplinary measures.’

However, after receiving guidance and counseling, the young player expressed deep regret for his actions.

The founder made it clear that at Dabo Soccer Academy, unruly haircuts and inappropriate dressing were strictly prohibited.

By implementing a dress code, the academy aimed to instill professionalism and respect among aspiring footballers, setting them on the right path both on and off the field.

Yaw Dabo’s emphasis on discipline and manners stems from his firm belief that these values are instrumental in shaping the character of young athletes.

He firmly believes that by instilling discipline from an early age, players build a strong foundation for success, not only in their sporting careers but also in all aspects of life.

Wagner head Prigozhin is in Russia – President Lukashenko

Aleksandr Lukashenko has stated that the head of the Wagner mercenary force is not on Belarusian soil.

The whereabouts of Yevgeny Prigozhin, who orchestrated an armed takeover of the Kremlin in late June, have been the subject of numerous rumours.

The warlord had consented to leave for exile in the adjacent nation as part of a deal to put an end to the uprising that was mediated by the president of Belarus.

He has not been seen in public since the mutiny, and last week it was believed he had landed in the capital Minsk.

But Lukashenko said Prigozhin is in Russia and ‘may’ be in St Petersburg or even Moscow.

He told reporters today: ‘As for Prigozhin, he is in St Petersburg. He is not on the territory of Belarus.’

A business jet linked to Prigozhin left St Petersburg for Moscow yesterday, and was heading for southern Russia today, according to flight tracking data.

But it was not clear if the mercenary chief was on board the plane.

There were also a number of wigs and fake beards shoved in a cupboard

Lukashenko said an offer for Wagner to station some of its fighters in Belarus – a prospect that has alarmed neighbouring Nato countries – still stands.

He said he did not see it as a risk to Belarus and did not believe they would ever take up arms against his country.

Separately, Russia has said the for-hire soldiers can go to Belarus, sign up with its regular armed forces or demobilise.

Lukashenko’s comments came just hours after Russian security serve agents raided Prigozhin’s mansion in St Petersburg.

FSB officers found fake wigs and beards, forged passports, guns and ammo, a sledgehammer, gold bars, a stuffed alligator.

A framed photo allegedly showing the severed heads of Prigozhin’s enemies was also among the belongings.

Images of the raid were then leaked and published by the pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia.

King Charles obtains the Crown of Scotland at lavish Edinburgh coronation

The Scottish Crown has been officially given to King Charles.

At an elaborate coronation ceremony held in Edinburgh this afternoon, he received the Scottish crown jewels.

They are emblems of his power in Scotland and include the Sword of State, sceptre, and the crown that Mary Queen of Scots wore in 1543.

Charles and Camilla watched from the Palace of Holyroodhouse as the legendary Red Arrows also did a ceremonial flypast after the wedding.

Nine Hawk jets from the Royal Air Force’s aerobatic team roared above the Royal Mile in a V formation, streaming red, white and blue colours behind them.

Thousands gathered in the Scottish capital to watch pipe bands march through the city centre before the service at St Giles’ Cathedral.

Scotland’s leading figures, and representatives from the nation’s life gathered for a service of thanksgiving and dedication for the King and Queen.

It was also attended by William and Kate, the Prince and Princess of Wales, known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

The service came eight weeks after Charles and Camilla were crowned in an ancient ceremony at Westminster Abbey where the King made a pledge to ‘serve’.

The Right Reverend Sally Foster-Fulton, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, delivered the sermon, which took the environment as one of its themes.

King Charles and Queen Camilla heard a stark message for the planet to be safeguarded for future generations and not left ‘baking to a crisp’.

She told the congregation that society will be on the ‘right track’ if we understand that ‘the Heavens and Earth’ are not ‘human commodities or possessions’.

‘Blessed are we, on the right track are we when we understand that our children do not inherit this Earth from us – we have borrowed it from them,’ she said.

‘And it is our duty to return it still singing and surging and bathing, not baking to a crisp.’

Charles spoke extensively before becoming King about the importance of the environment, tackling climate change and protecting wildlife.

He runs his Aston Martin sportscar on sustainable fuel and even recycles his bathwater at Clarence House.

Spectators watched a people’s procession make its way from Edinburgh Castle to the cathedral – a group around 100 strong, reflecting all aspects of Scottish society from the arts and politics, to education, civil society and business, including charities which the King supports as patron.

At its head was Shetland pony Corporal Cruachan IV, regimental mascot of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Protesters and royal fans lined the streets, with republican groups chanting ‘not my King’ countered by others shouting ‘God save the King’.

Participants from the people’s procession sat in the cathedral’s pews as the Moderator said ideals like ‘mercy and peace’ should not be ‘domesticated or downgraded’ but be the ‘fabric of our being’.

She also said that society is on the ‘right track’ if people are ‘brave enough to choose collaboration and trust over fear-filled circling of our wagons’.

‘Sisters and brothers, look around you. We are one global neighbourhood – intricately inter-related and completely co-dependent, woven together, like a tartan,’ she said.

Scotland’s First Minister, Humza Yousaf, gave a Bible reading from the Old Testament during the service, and Olympic rower Dame Katherine Grainger carried the Sword of State.

The Rt Rev Foster-Fulton concluded by telling the King and Queen: ‘Your Majesties, you have made it part of your mission to speak alongside creation, advocating for it.

‘As we present the Honours of Scotland to you, we commit ourselves to walking that journey with you.

‘We are all a small part of something so much bigger – this beautiful, sacred creation and everyone and everything in it. Thanks be to God.’

61-year-old woman accused of killing a baby and abusing one-year-old

In Hapton, Lancashire, a mother has been accused of murder following the death of a baby.

On March 1 of last year, police were called to a residence in the village after hearing that a baby boy had experienced a medical emergency.

The infant, who was nine months old, was rushed to the hospital for treatment, where he passed away on March 5.

A 60-year-old Haslingden woman and a 78-year-old Burnley man were detained in March on suspicion of Section 18 Assault and then detained on suspicion of murder.

The 78-year-old man has now been released without charge but, after consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, police have now charged the woman with the baby’s murder.

Karen Foster, 61, of no fixed address, will appear before Blackburn Magistrates’ Court this morning.

She is also charged with a separate S47 assault on a one-year-old girl in Hapton on March 22, 2019.

Foster is not related to either of the two victims and the two children are not related to one another.

16 people including kids killed by poisonous gas leakage at gold mining company

In South Africa, a suspected deadly gas leak from a cylinder at an illicit gold mining operation claimed the lives of at least 16 persons, three of whom were children.

Rescuers are conducting searches within a 100-meter radius of the scene in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, where they suspect that up to 24 people may be dead.

While police, ambulance, and fire brigade search for more victims, the youngest victims are thought to be 1, 6, and 15 years old.

Zama-zamas, or illegal gold miners, had been utilising nitric oxide in a sizable shanty where they lived and worked.

This was to separate gold they extracted from dirt and earth.

Spokesman William Ntladi said: ‘The search and recovery team is searching the shacks in and around the area where the cylinder leaked to verify if there are other casualties nearby.

‘The bodies we have found had already died but others could have tried to escape and collapsed elsewhere so we won’t have a final toll until the whole scene has been fully examined.

‘We do not know when the gas started leaking but when the emergency teams arrived at around 8pm on Wednesday night the cylinder which had leaked into the shack was already empty.’

Another Ekurhuleni EMS officer spoke to TimesLIVE and said women and children were among the dead, with their bodies scattered in different parts of the settlement near the leak.

He said: ‘The zama-zama guys live amongst the community and clean and refine their gold here using gas cylinders but sadly this time the gas leaked resulting in sleeping people suffocating.

‘Others who were awake died as they tried to run but the fumes were too much to bear. The scene is horrific with bodies lying everywhere waiting for the forensic teams to arrive,’ he said.

A township elder, fearful of the zama-zamas added: ‘There is nothing we can do about them. They are too powerful and too dangerous. They live amongst us in the Angelo area.

‘What has happened has destroyed Angelo – there are bodies wherever you look.’

A South African Police source said: ‘They are a law onto themselves and are always heavily armed and wherever they set up camp rape and murder and violence follows behind them.’

It is not the first time an incident like this has happened, after 41 suspected miners were killed when a lorry carrying liquefied petroleum gas exploded under a bridge at the same township on Christmas Eve.

And at least 31 illegal miners were killed in a gas explosion while underground illegally excavating a disused mine in Welkom, in the Free State Province in June.

Putin’s ally Lukashenko provides update on Wagner CEO Prigozhin

Aleksandr Lukashenko has stated that the paramilitary group’s leader is not in Belarusian territory.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, who oversaw an armed coup against the Kremlin in late June, is a subject of much rumour over his location.

The warlord had promised to move into exile in the adjacent nation as part of a pact to put an end to the uprising that the president of Belarus had mediated.

He has not been seen in public since the mutiny, and last week it was believed he had landed in the capital Minsk.

But Lukashenko said Prigozhin is in Russia and ‘may’ be in St Petersburg or even Moscow.

    28. Wagner leader captured in odd wigs and disguises

Wagner leader captured in odd wigs and disguises

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner company, has been seen wearing a variety of odd disguises after Russian security authorities raided his St. Petersburg mansion and discovered a wardrobe full of wigs.

In addition, FSB agents discovered a stuffed alligator, fake beards, falsified passports, firearms and ammo, a sledgehammer, gold bars, and a framed image supposedly depicting the decapitated heads of his adversaries.

The pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia, whose parent firm is run by Vladimir Putin’s long-rumored ex-gym mate Alina Kabaeva, then leaked and published photos of the raid.

The revelations are seen as a direct attempt to humiliate the ‘treacherous’ mercenary boss after Prigozhin led his guns for hire on what appeared to be an insurrection aimed at toppling the regime.

He later backed down, insisting his ‘march for justice’ was not a military coup, and was exiled to Belarus as part of a deal brokered by its strongman leader Alexander Lukashenko.

Prigozhin has not been seen since landing in Belarus on June 24 and reports suggest the Wagner boss has been travelling to and from Russia to collect an arsenal of weapons.

Lukashenko confirmed on Thursday he ‘may’ still be in Moscow or St Petersburg.

A Russian state TV channel attacked the mercenary chief and claimed the investigation into his rebellion for treason – closed as part of the deal ending the uprising – is still active.

Narrating footage of the raid, Rossiya-1 TV reporter Eduard Petrov called Prigozhin a hypocrite over his corruption allegations against the military leadership.

‘Nobody planned to close this case. The investigation is ongoing,’ Mr Petrov said.

‘We need to get to the bottom of who was on whose side [of the mutiny], we need to punish and prosecute them.’

Photos of Prigozhin donning the disguises show him posing as an employee of Sudan’s defence ministry, a diplomat from Abu Dhabi, and a senior Libyan lieutenant.

He also dressed up as a colonel from Tripoli, a ‘merchant from Syria’, and a field commander named Mohammed.

Security services also found a giant sledgehammer inscribed with the words ‘for use in important negotiations’ on display in a reception room.

Last November, footage posted to Telegram purportedly showed a former mercenary being executed with a sledgehammer blow to the head for defecting.

Prigozhin later sent a sledgehammer smeared in fake blood to the European Parliament after the Wagner Group was added to its terrorist list.

Man stabbed with shattered glass bottle on British Airways flight

On a British Airways flight, a passenger severely stabbed a man with a shattered glass bottle.

Just over an hour before the jet was scheduled to depart London Gatwick on Monday for the Caribbean, chaotic mayhem erupted at 30,000 feet.

On board flight BA2159 to St. Lucia, disturbing footage captured two males fighting as passengers and personnel attempted to mediate.

According to reports, the altercation started when a passenger, who had been arguing with another man, walked to the Boeing 777’s kitchen and destroyed a bottle.

After glass shattered across the galley in the food prep area, the aggressor, seen wearing a bucket hat, stormed back into the cabin and plunged the jagged-edged bottle into a man’s body.

Blood splattered across the cabin when he also ploughed the bottle into an overhead locker after the melee.

Brave British Airways staff heroically managed to wrestle him to the floor to bring the fracas to an end, reports The Sun.

They were both warned and forced back to their seats, while the pilot was left with no choice but to continue until the plane could land at the island’s Hewanorra International Airport in Vieux Fort.

One source told The Sun: ‘It was horrifying when the passenger broke the bottle then used the shards as a weapon.

‘Suddenly there was blood in the cabin. No-one knew how gruesome it was going to get.

‘Witnessing that in such a confined space, and not knowing if or how the bloodshed was going to end, was horrific.

‘Some very brave individuals separated the two men and got them back in their seats. It could have been so much worse.’

Passenger Nichola Pierre told MailOnline: ‘I was on board this flight and these guys were drinking and giving jokes with each other before this occurred.

‘One man got stabbed in the torso and the other guy in the back of the head before another gentleman and myself were able to calm down this guy who purchased a duty free wine bottle which he used to commit the act.’

The attacker, who is said to be from St Lucia, was reportedly arrested by police when the aircraft touched down.

One bystander who tried to help, also from St Lucia, was badly cut and treated by a nurse on the flight, while all those injured were taken to hospital upon arrival.

A St Lucia Police spokesman said: ‘We are looking into this with immediate effect. This is a very serious matter which occurred on a plane. This is very serious indeed.’

The identities of those involved in the incident have not been released at this stage.

A British Airways spokesperson said: ‘We’re shocked that anyone would act in this way and are grateful to our highly trained cabin crew and the customers who supported them in handling this difficult incident.

‘We want to assure customers that this behaviour will never be tolerated and we will always take the appropriate action.’

    30. Ukraine accused by Russia of planning ‘catastrophic’ strike on Zaporizhzhia

Ukraine accused by Russia of planning ‘catastrophic’ strike on Zaporizhzhia

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is allegedly under “a great threat of sabotage,” which “could have catastrophic consequences.”

As tensions around the complex rose on Tuesday, Russia and Ukraine once more accused one another of planning an attack on Europe’s largest plant.

Volodymyr Zelensky forewarned that Moscow’s troops might have planted explosives on the roof, which, when they went off, might have been attributed to Ukrainian bombardment.

But Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov hit back at the claims, saying measures were being taken to counter the threat posed to the plant by ‘the Kyiv regime’.

‘The situation is quite tense because there is indeed a great threat of sabotage by the Kyiv regime, which could be catastrophic in its consequences,’ he said.

‘The Kyiv regime has repeatedly demonstrated its willingness to do anything. Therefore, all measures are being taken to counter such a threat.’

He did not present evidence to back his assertions.

Russian troops took control of the Zaporizhzhia plant last year soon after embarking on what Vladimir Putin calls his ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine.

Each side has since regularly accused the other of shelling around the plant and of risking a major nuclear incident.

Last year, when a threat of an accident at the plant first arose, Ukraine established a crisis response headquarters.

Recently, emergency workers have been taking part in drills in preparation for a potential radiation leak.

Footage showed rescuers in yellow and white protective gear and gas masks, using dosimeters to check passenger cars and trucks for radiation levels and then cleaning wheels before vehicles underwent additional decontamination at specialised washing points. A man on a stretcher was brought into a medical tent as sirens blared.

According to the emergency services, in case of a nuclear disaster at the plant, approximately 300,000 people would be evacuated from the areas closest to the facility.

That covers four regions: Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and Mykolaiv. The evacuation would be mandatory.

Those forced to flee will be allowed to bring their pets with them, according to the services. Buses, trains, and personal cars would be used for the evacuation from the affected zone.

A leaflet distributed online lists what to pack in case of an evacuation from a radiation zone.

It then adds: ‘Tightly wrap your suitcase or backpack with cling film or scotch tape. This will definitely ease the process of their deactivation at the sanitation units.’

Depending on the wind direction and the spread of radiation, people would be taken to safer areas within Ukraine.

‘There are different scenarios, but we are preparing for the most critical one,’ Yurii Vlasenko, the Ukranian deputy minister of energy said.

    31. Russian missile attack in Lviv kills four people

Russian missile attack in Lviv kills four people

In the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, a Russian missile strike that struck a residential building has resulted in at least four fatalities.

About 60 apartments and 50 automobiles were reportedly destroyed in the attack, according to mayor Andriy Sadovyi.

More stranded victims are still being sought after by rescuers via the debris.

Sadovyi said the strike was the biggest against Lviv’s civilian infrastructure since the start of the all-out invasion last year in a video address to the city’s citizens.

Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian war refugees have sought safety in the city from other areas to the east.

President Volodymyr Zelensky posted a reaction on Telegram, saying: ‘Unfortunately, there are wounded and dead. My condolences to the relatives!

‘There will definitely be a response to the enemy. A tangible one.’

Zelensky also posted drone footage that shows wrecked buildings from above. Third and fourth floors of the struck building were ruined. Nine people were wounded.

The attack comes amid heightened tensions around Zaporizhzhia, with Ukrainian and Russian officials accusing each other of plotting to bomb Europe’s biggest nuclear power plant.

Ukraine has claimed Moscow may try to cause a deliberate radiation leak in a bid to derail Kyiv’s ongoing counteroffensive in the surrounding region.

Citing the latest intelligence reports, Zelensky alleged Russian troops had placed ‘objects resembling explosives’ on top of several of the plant’s power units to ‘simulate’ an attack from outside.

‘Their detonation should not damage power units but may create a picture of shelling from Ukraine,’ according to a statement from the general staff of Ukraine’s armed forces.

In Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov raised the spectre of a potentially ‘catastrophic’ provocation by the Ukrainian army at the nuclear plant.

‘The situation is quite tense. There is a great threat of sabotage by the Kyiv regime, which can be catastrophic in its consequences,’ Mr Peskov told reporters.

He also claimed the Kremlin was pursuing ‘all measures’ to counter the alleged Ukrainian threat.

Putin’s “General Armageddon”missing for ten days since Wagner uprising

After the Wagner paramilitary group‘s failed mutiny, Russia’s “General Armageddon” has been gone for ten days.

Former top Russian commander in Ukraine Sergei Surovikin was charged with supporting mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin during the revolt.

His detention and subsequent release have been rumoured in some sources, but they have not been verified.

According to the UK Ministry of Defence, he has not been seen since June 24, but officials stressed that any on-the-record sanctions against him will be ‘divisive’ as he is one of the most respected senior officers within the Russian military.

Away from the turmoil in Russia, there were reports of long queues at the border between Ukraine and Moldova amid a ‘serious threat’ at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

According to reports from Sky News, a number of Ukrainians are now fleeing to the neighbouring ally.

But Daniel Voda, a spokesperson for the Moldovan government, stressed that any increase in numbers of people crossing the border is due to the summer holidays.

Numbers analyzed by Metro.co.uk show there has been no drastic increase in the border crossings in the last 72 hours.

How can we prevent student suicides?

The rising cases of student suicides on Ghanaian university campuses are a cause for concern and call for urgent action. While some institutions have taken some measures to address the situation, such as setting up counseling units and helplines, more needs to be done to prevent further loss of lives.

Some possible interventions that could contribute to mitigating this disturbing phenomenon are:

      • The promotion of mental health awareness: Increase awareness about mental health issues through campaigns, workshops, and orientation programs for new students. Encourage open discussions on mental health to reduce the stigma surrounding seeking help.
      • The improvement of counseling services: Ensure that counseling services are readily available and easily accessible to students. Allocate sufficient resources to hire qualified mental health professionals who can provide individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and ongoing support.
      • Training faculty and staff: Provide training sessions to faculty and staff members on recognizing signs of distress, dealing with mental health crises, and referring students to appropriate support services. This empowers them to support students in need and intervene effectively.
      • Strengthening peer support programs: Establish peer support programs that train students to provide informal counseling and emotional support to their peers. These programs can create a sense of community, reduce isolation, and provide an additional layer of support.
      • Collaborating with local mental health providers: Forge partnerships with local mental health providers to ensure students have access to a broader range of mental health services beyond what the university can offer. Establish clear referral systems and maintain regular communication with these providers, among others.

In addition to implementing these measures, it is essential to emphasize the importance of seeking help for individuals who may be feeling suicidal or for those who are concerned about someone in that state. If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, it is crucial to take immediate action. Here are some steps to consider:

      1. Reach out for support: Speak openly and honestly about your feelings with someone you trust, such as a friend, family member, or counselor. Sharing your thoughts and emotions can provide relief and help you gain perspective.
      2. Seek professional help: Reach out to mental health professionals, such as therapists, psychologists, or counselors, who are trained to offer support and guidance in times of crisis. They can provide appropriate interventions and help develop coping strategies.
      3. Contact helplines or crisis centers: Many organizations offer helplines, hotlines, or crisis centers that are available 24/7. These services provide immediate support and can guide you through difficult moments. Research local helplines or consider reaching out to organizations like Samaritans or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
      4. Encourage open conversations: Create an environment where open discussions about mental health and suicide are encouraged. Breaking the stigma surrounding these topics can help individuals feel more comfortable seeking help and support.
      5. Stay connected: If you are concerned about someone who may be suicidal, reach out to them and let them know you care. Be a good listener, offer support, and encourage them to seek professional help. Remember, you don’t have to handle the situation alone, and involving others who can provide assistance is crucial.

Remember, suicidal thoughts should always be taken seriously, and immediate action should be taken to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected. If there is an imminent risk of harm, contact emergency services or local authorities right away.
