“We do not sleep… I would describe it as fainting – Sudanese doctor

Dr. Howida AlHassand clearly recalls the family who were slaughtered in their home among the sea of gunshot wounds and war injuries at the little Alban Gedid hospital in Khartoum.

She calls me and shows me three images of their dead bodies draped in blood-stained bedsheets. “The kids were playing when a mortar hit their house,” she says.

One shows a boy with a severed leg, his muscles and bones pouring out of the skin that once held his thigh to the hip. In the second photo, the brain of a young boy is visible through a gaping hole in his skull that extends from his forehead to the top of the head. And in the third, another boy lies in a red T-shirt darkened by the blood from wounds that pierce his jaw.

“They were two brothers and their cousin. The rest of the family have various injuries,” she says almost mechanically.

Most of the other injuries she treated and saw are the result of bullets. “People are not just shot once or twice. Every injury we get has multiple gunshot wounds – bullets in the chest, stomach, leg. Each surgery takes a long time,” she says, stressing how dangerous it is for civilians to walk down the streets of the capital.

The staff at the hospital have been working around the clock since the fighting started in Sudan.

In a series of videos, photos and messages Alhassan shared with CNN, she provides a glimpse into the life of Khartoum residents during two weeks of gun battles, shelling and airstrikes as Sudan’s Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces battle for control of the country. They reveal what the doctors and nurses in the two dozen operating hospitals are doing to keep the injured alive, with little and dwindling supplies.

Only 23 hospitals are open out of 82 in the capital and other states witnessing fighting, according to the Central Committee for Sudan Doctors on Wednesday. Nineteen hospitals were directly hit and evacuated, while others were shuttered for various reasons, including security threats, power cuts, and the inability of the medical staff to safely reach their hospitals

CNN spoke to several physicians and hospital staff in Khartoum, who described their frustration with not being able to serve those most in need. “The biggest challenge facing medical staff trying to reach hospitals is the lack of safe passages. Even ambulances are not let through,” Abdel Moniem Al-Tayeb tells CNN. The hospital he works at in central Khartoum was shuttered on the first day of the fighting. He said the staff was willing to keep on working if they had electricity.

“The biggest challenge is that there is no fuel. That there is no continuous electric power at hospitals,” he adds.

“Medical services collapsed on the first day of the fighting. Right now, there are no medical services at all. We are only focusing on gunshot wounds and injuries,” one doctor tells CNN, asking not to publish her name or her hospital because of safety concerns.

She fears the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) soldiers would raid the hospital to force the doctors to treat their wounded, as doctors said happened at other hospitals. If the army learns about the presence of the RSF there, they could strike the hospital, she says, referring to the two warring parties.

Supplies at her hospital are running dangerously low and like AlHassan’s hospital, they too are relying on donations and the protection and support of their neighbors. When there is a brief lull in the fighting, they see an increase in looting and criminal activities around them, leading to even more injuries.

In one video shared by AlHassan, her phone camera shows medical staff tending to wounds of a man stretched on a surgical bed as she decries the ceasefires that collapse hours after going into effect.

“They talk about a ceasefire but there is no ceasefire. The wounded keep on coming,” she says in a video recorded on April 25. “It’s the same staff that has been working for 11 days,” she adds.

Her videos show busy halls with continuous movement of staff, patients and families.

One video shows a doctor stitching a wound cutting through the calf of a woman. The doctor’s scissor and bandages rest on the same bed she is sitting on, as a family member hugs her and a man holds down her hand. In another, the medical staff are slumped over a patient with a gaping wound in the upper thigh. Curtains do a poor job separating patients stretching on gurneys in a different room. In another video, a man carrying a backpack is mopping the blood covering the hospital floor.

The staff and the volunteers are doing multiple jobs, AlHassan says. She is an obstetrician-gynaecologist who for the past two weeks has been treating gunshots and other battle wounds, and when needed once queued for four hours at a nearby bakery to get bread for the team.

“We try as much as we can. We are working with very scarce capabilities, and we’re not working at the standard that we would like,” she says, turning her camera goes past a squeaky wooden door to show the medical equipment near the operation room. “There are issues with sterilization. We use the equipment and the instruments more than once … Even with medication, we give smaller doses.”

As her camera whizzes through squeaky doors and people clogging the corridors, it quickly skims over walls with chipped paint and worn-out furniture.

In another video, she shows her colleagues resting their heads on their folded arms on a table. One man dressed in scrubs is startled by the movement, opening his eyes for a second before going back to sleep.

“We don’t sleep. I wouldn’t call what we do sleep. I would call it fainting,” she says. And it is full of nightmares, she adds. When she is awake, she worries about her elderly mother, who lives nearby. AlHassan considers herself lucky that she’s able to check on her every now and then.

Her fatigue shows in the videos she recorded. She starts every video stating her name, the hospital name and then sometimes fumbles the date and time, asking her colleagues for guidance. “Is it Monday or Tuesday now?” she asks in one video.

AlHassan shared the videos with CNN over several days, as the evacuation of foreign nationals were underway. She worries that the fighting will get a lot worse once the evacuation is over. And it would be made worse by the food shortage they are already experiencing.

“I call upon all humanitarian organizations and all the countries in the world to make the two sides of the conflict to stop the war immediately. And I call upon the sides of the conflict to stop the war. Sudanese blood is one blood. I beg you to silence the sound of the rifle,” she says in a final voice note. Calls and messages were repeatedly cut short by the disruption in phone and internet services.

“Hospitals of Sudan are under fire, medical supplies have almost run out, medical staff is exhausted. Now, the Sudanese citizen is dying, not just because of bullets, but because of other illnesses that they can’t go to hospitals for. I beg you, I beg you, stop the war.”

  • China issues a warning over tensions around Taiwan as US and Philippine defense ties deepen

China issues a warning over tensions around Taiwan as US and Philippine defense ties deepen

Being tucked between two Pacific giants, the Philippines has historically had to tread carefully when managing the clashing interests of Beijing and Washington, an intricate juggling act that has been vividly on show in recent weeks.

In addition to staging the largest joint military exercises with the US to date, the Philippines has had a very busy diplomatic month in April. China, which has grown increasingly alarmed and vocal about the archipelago’s defense ties, sent a top envoy to the country.

There was a sensitive period in US-Philippine relations only a few years ago.

The country’s then leader, Rodrigo Duterte, routinely launched obscenity laden rants against US counterpart Barack Obama while downplaying longstanding territorial disputes with Beijing and seeking to attract investment from its giant neighbor to the north.

But the election of his successor, Ferdinand Marcos Jr, last year has returned relations to a more even keel, in part because Manila has become wary of a more assertive China.

Marcos Jr, who has been on a charm offensive to mend ties with Manila’s historical ally, is set to fly to the United States to meet with President Joe Biden in Washington next week.

He visit caps a month of frenetic exchanges with the United States.

More than 12,000 American troops joined some 5,000 soldiers from the Philippines over the last three weeks to take part in the largest “Balikatan” joint military exercises to date, an event Beijing’s state-run media has labeled an “attempt to target China.”

The climax of the war games came Wednesday when US and Philippine forces fired on a mock enemy warship in the West Philippine Sea, the part of the South China Sea that encompasses the Philippines Exclusive Economic Zone.

Just as those drills kicked off, the US also hosted two top diplomats from the Philippines, for talks during which both sides agreed to complete a roadmap for the US to provide security assistance to its regional ally the next five to 10 years, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a “2+2 meeting” in Washington.

Last year the US granted $100 million to boost the Southeast Asian country’s defense capabilities and military modernization. It also plans to allocate $100 million for the improvement of military bases to which the US has access under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA).

In February, the Philippines granted new rights to the US military to add four bases to the five originally covered under the EDCA. The new facilities include three on the main island of Luzon, close to Taiwan, and one in Palawan province in the South China Sea (SCS).

That appears to have alarmed China.

Earlier this month Beijing’s ambassador in Manila, Huang Xilian, accused the Philippines of “stoking the fire” of regional tensions by offering expanded military base access to the US, saying that the goal was to interfere in China’s affairs with Taiwan.

China’s ruling Communist Party has never controlled Taiwan but claims the self-ruled island democracy as its own and has repeatedly refused to rule out taking it by force, a threat which Manila perceives as reason to ramp up its guard with help from Washington.

Huang also appeared to threaten overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Taiwan, which prompted a backlash in the Philippines.

“The Philippines is advised to unequivocally oppose ‘Taiwan independence’ rather than stoking the fire by offering the US access to the military bases near the Taiwan Strait, if you care genuinely about the 150,000 OFWs,” Huang said.

National Security Council spokesperson Jonathan Malaya responded to the Chinese ambassador’s remarks by saying that “the Philippines has no intention of interfering in the Taiwan issue,” and added that the EDCA sites were “not meant for offensive operations against China or for interference in the Taiwan issue.”

With tensions high over the Beijing ambassador’s comments, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang arrived last Friday for a three-day visit to Manila, where he met with Marcos Jr and Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo.

The readouts suggested both sides were keen to calm the waters with Marcos Jr announcing “more lines of communications” to resolve conflicts between the two countries over the West Philippine Sea and Manalo also pledging to “overcome difficulties and interference.”

Qin said Beijing hoped the Philippine side would “properly handle Taiwan-related and maritime issues in line with the overall interests of regional peace and stability.”

Analysts say the positioning of the Philippines makes the archipelago vital for anyone wanting to project power across the Pacific.

“The Philippines is crucial in safeguarding the national security interests of both China, as well as the security or strategic interests of the United States in the Pacific,” said Aries Arugay, a visiting fellow at Singapore’s ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute.

“And this is why both superpowers are very sensitive every time the Philippines is being perceived as leaning more towards one or the other,” he added.

What the last month has shown, added Anna Malindog-Uy, vice president of the Asian Century Philippines Strategic Studies Institute (ACPSSI), is that Filipinos “do not want to be compromised for the geopolitical interests and agenda of the United States in the region.”

Manila may be thousands of miles away from Washington, but their defense alliance dates back to the end of World War II, as America sought to protect its interests in the Pacific.

The Philippines was a former US territory and used to be home to two of the US military’s largest overseas installations, Clark Air Base and Subic Bay Naval Base, which were transferred to Philippine control in the 1990s.

A mutual defense treaty signed in 1951 remains in force, stipulating that both sides would help defend each other if either were attacked by a third party.

Moderninzing the Philippines’ military capabilities by working with the US, and establishing well-connected regional defense cooperation with players like Japan, South Korea and Australia, is a priority for Marcos Jr, according to Richard Heydarian, senior lecturer in international relations at the University of the Philippines Asian Center.

Heydarian describes the approach as a “multi-vector foreign policy of maximizing ties with all major powers without excessively relying on any one of them.”

“He’s doubling down in the Philippines’ alliance with the United States so that we deal with China from a position of strength,” Heydarian said.

Heydarian added that China has to rethink its strategy towards the Philippines, as the Marcos Jr administration is openly more aligned with the US.

China remains one of the top trade partners of the Philippines, while Marcos Jr also continues to negotiate energy and agriculture investments from Beijing.

But Manila’s growing caution towards Beijing in recent years has been furthered by recent maritime aggressions – including accusations China used a high-powered laser against a Philippine Coast Guard vessel in February – Beijing’s increased drills around Taiwan as well as maritime patrols in the South China Sea, said Chong Ja Ian, an associate professor at the National University of Singapore.

“These give the Philippines a lot of reason for caution towards Beijing. But at the same time, they do want to keep relations with Beijing on an even keel,” Chong said.

Supportfor the expanded defense ties with Washington is far from unanimous.

Some worry Marcos Jr might be giving too much access to the US, especially when it comes to bases and facilities close to Taiwan, Heydarian said.

The president’s own sister, Sen. Imee Marcos, has publicly questioned why the Philippine government should rely on foreigners for its external defense, urging for defined limitations on the EDCA pact should the country be dragged into regional conflict.

As the US-China rivalry intensifies the Indo-Pacific, their competition for influence has been localized within the Philippines, particularly in the provinces where American bases are located, Arugay added.

There were pockets of protest in Cagayan province, the northern mountainous region where three out of the four new EDCA sites are to be built.

At least 5,000 people in Cagayan held demonstrations and prayer rallies, as they believed that America’s self-interest were prioritized before the native residents, according to the Cagayan Provincial Information Office.

Verdict in Adams Mahama murder trial exposes major flaws in Ghana’s jury system – Attorney-General

The Office of the Attorney General and Minister for Justice has reacted to the verdict delivered by a jury in the Republic vrs Gregory Afoko and Asabke Alangdi trial.

A seven (7) member jury on Thursday, April 27, 2023, found the two accused person not guilty of the offence of murder in the death of the late Adams Mahama, former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party.

However, for the offense of conspiracy to commit murder, the jury found the second accused guilty while it found the first accused not guilty.

Since the law prescribing death sentence for murder charges rules that the verdict must be unanimous, the state according to the Attorney General’s Office is thus bound to put the first accused before a different jury for a retrial.

In a statement, the Attorney General said the situation highlights the challenges with the jury system of trial.

According to Godfred Yeboah Dame, his office is taking steps to remedy such situations from occurring in the future.

“The instant case, particularly the unanimous verdict of the jury regarding the guilt of the 2nd accused for conspiracy to commit murder, whilst at the same time delivering a hung verdict in the case of the 1st accused on the same charge, highlights the severe challenges with the jury system, a situation the Attorney-General is taking steps to remedy as part of proposals for amendment of many parts of the criminal procedure laws of Ghana,” the statement said.

“The Attorney-General hereby respectfully, entreats members of the public, including lawyers, to be guided accordingly and desist from comments which have an undue tendency to jeopardise the sound and efficient administration of justice,” he added.

IBHAG withdraws decision to exempt itself from DDEP committee

IBHAG appears to have reversed its decision to withdraw from the Technical Committee of the government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

The association last week announced that it had recused itself from the committee due to a lack of alignment with the interests of its members.

However, latest developments indicate that representatives of IBHAG attended the technical committee’s virtual meeting held on April 27, 2023.

“Contrary to its stated position, however, two representatives of IBHAG attended the technical committee’s virtual meeting held on Thursday morning.

“They made contributions and backed the proposals by the Individual Bondholders’ Forum to help ease the burden of the DDEP on individual bondholders.

“Also in attendance at the meeting were representatives of IBF and officials of the Finance Ministry. IBHAG and IBF both represent individual bondholders. There have been suggestions for the two of them to merge but as their approaches differ, they have remained as distinct entities even though both of them are working towards the same goal,” the Individual Bondholders said.

IBHAG last week accused sister body, the Individual Bondholders Forum (IBF) of not pushing the interest of its members and announced the decision to withdraw from the committee.

IBHAG’s convener, Martin Kpebu, noted that the government could not continue to ignore the suffering of individual bondholders, who are being punished for not signing up to the DDEP, and asked for a more sensitive and humane approach to alleviating their plight.

“The Government cannot continue to be insensitive to the suffering of the individual bondholders by deliberately punishing those who did not sign up to the DDEP as it meticulously executes the various threats made to them for not signing up. The Ministry cannot keep making things comfortable for the government by not sharing in the burden of the economic hardship we are in as a country under its leadership,” the group noted.

Kpebu also criticized the Convener of the Individual Bondholders Forum (IBF), Senyo Hosi, for his wavering views and alleged closeness to the Ministry of Finance.

“Senyo Hosi of IBF, appears to be an appendage of the Ministry of Finance; doing its bidding. This is supported by the wavering views, which departs completely from the past collective position of individual bondholders. Private meetings between Senyo Hosi of IBF and the Ministry of Finance, are not the solutions to the concerns of Individual Bondholders whose coupon and principal payments have been in arrears for over two months,” he said.

  • Police in Australia search through 3,000 tons of trash for the remains of a missing lady

Police in Australia search through 3,000 tons of trash for the remains of a missing lady

Police in Australia are searching a Queensland dump site for the remains of a lady whose body they suspect were in a trash container that was dumped into a garbage truck as part of a routine garbage collection.

Late in March, Lesley Trotter’s family in Brisbane reported her missing. Initially, search efforts for the 78-year-old woman concentrated on the local bushland walking trails where she liked to go trekking.

However, earlier this month, Queensland homicide detectives revealed they had proof that she had passed away and that her body might have been inside a bin that was emptied into a garbage truck. This information caused the search to take a morbid turn.

The truck was one of 23 that took their waste collections to a transfer station, where it was compressed before being distributed to two landfill sites, Queensland Police said in a statement.

On April 18, officers partially cordoned off one of those sites and have been sifting through rubbish for Trotter’s body, or any clues to her whereabouts.

At the time, Detective Acting Superintendent Andrew Massingham described the search area as “quite enormous.” “There is some 3,000 tons of general waste that we need to sort through,” he said.

“The waste will be exhumed from the ground. It will then be tipped into lanes approximately 30 meters deep, at which time our police and ADF (Australian Defense Force) personnel will sift through by hand and using rakes,” he said.

On Thursday, police said less than 13% of the search area had been covered, and the entire process could take several weeks. Though they said paperwork belonging to a nearby resident had been found, suggesting they’re looking in the right place.

Previously Massingham said he could not “rule out foul play,” according to CNN affiliate 7 News.

Police confirmed they were looking into a possible link between Trotter’s disappearance and her recycling habits – she was known to go through trash cans outside her home and neighboring properties for recycling waste that had been put in the wrong bins.

She’d then put it in the correct bin to be recycled, police said.

“Whether that’s created some angst amongst the tenants, we’re working through that at the moment,” Massingham said.

Probe into alleged stealing of School Feeding items at Atebubu commences

The police are investigating six persons for their alleged involvement in the stealing of fooditems from the stock of the School Feeding Programme at the Atebubu Senior High School in the Bono East Region.

The six persons were arrested following a report to the police by Edward Owusu, the Atebubu-Amantin Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) on Friday, April 21, 2023.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Owusu said 26 bags of maize, 20 bags of beans, 10 bags of rice, and one gallon of 25-liter cooking oil were retrieved from the suspects.

When contacted, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Elias Denu-Koto, the Atebubu District Police Commander, told the GNA that the Command received a call from the MCE on the alleged theft and proceeded to effect the arrest.

However, the six suspects had since been granted bail, while investigations continued for possible prosecution.

  • Border transgressions undermine China’s relations on their “entire basis – India

Border transgressions undermine China’s relations on their “entire basis – India

The defense minister of India warned his Chinese counterpart on Thursday that incursions into their shared border threaten the “entirely basis” of their bilateral relations.

Before a regional security forum on Friday, Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh made the remarks during a meeting with the recently appointed Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu in New Delhi.

The two military chiefs had “frank discussions about the developments in the India-China border areas as well as bilateral relations,” the Indian military Ministry stated in a statement after their meeting.

In apparent reference to deadly border clashes that claimed the lives of multiple soldiers on both sides three years ago, Singh “categorically conveyed that development of relations between India and China is premised on prevalence of peace and tranquility at the borders,” the statement said.

“He reiterated that violation of existing agreements has eroded the entire basis of bilateral relations and disengagement at the border will logically be followed with de-escalation,” the statement added.

It is the first such encounter on Indian soil between the two defense chiefs since deadly clashes along their disputed border in Aksai Chin-Ladakh in 2020. Tensions between the two countries have been simmering ever since, and escalated in December when a brawl between troops from both sides in the Tawang Sector of India’s northeastern territory of Arunachal Pradesh resulted in minor injuries.

The lengthy disputed border has long been a source of friction between New Delhi and Beijing, with the agitation spilling into war before. In 1962 a month-long conflict ended in a Chinese victory and India losing thousands of square miles of territory.

In a readout of the meeting released by China’s Defense Ministry, Li said that “as of now,” the situation on the border is stable. “Both sides should take a long-term view, place the border issue at an appropriate position in our bilateral relations, and promote the normalization of the border situation as soon as possible,” said the statement.

Li is visiting New Delhi alongside counterparts from Russia and several Central Asian countries to attend the security summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s (SCO) defense ministers in New Delhi on Friday. His visit comes four days after India and China concluded the 18th round of talks to attempt to resolve the border issue.

Ahead of his visit, China’s Ministry of Defense said Li will “communicate and exchange views on issues of the international and regional situations as well as defense and security cooperation,” at the SCO gathering.

Earlier this month, he met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow in his first overseas trip since assuming the role, as China and Russia continue to bolster ties while Western countries ramp up pressure on Beijing to push Putin to end his war against Ukraine.

Li, a general and veteran of China’s military modernization drive, was sanctioned by the United States in 2018 over transactions with Russia’s state-controlled arms exporter Rosoboronexport, when he led the Chinese military’s Equipment Development Department.

India, which is moving closer to the US as it tries to counter the rise of an increasingly assertive China, also relies heavily on Russian arms to equip its military.

India assumed the chair of the SCO summit in 2023. The grouping’s foreign ministers are expected to meet in the western Indian coastal state of Goa on May 4-5.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s visit to the country will be the most senior-level one in seven years.

The implementation date was captured in a notice issued by the authority.

The new and revised taxes include three key tax measures – the Excise Amendment Act, 2023; Income Tax Amendment Act, 2023 and the Growth and Sustainability Levy Act, 2023.

The GRA noticed indicated that businesses have been given enough time to configure their systems for the taxes to be implemented since the law was passed.

    Excise Duty Amendment Tax

On the Excise Duty Amendment Act, the authority added that the tax has been expanded to cover some items and commodities that was previously not captured.

The development may result in the prices of some processed fruit juice, cigar, mineral water, spirits and wines including sparkling wine, going up.

However, the Ghana Union of Traders Association, maintains that it will not hesitate to pass on the cost to consumers as it might be difficult for it members to absorb these taxes.

    Income Amendment Tax

On the Income Tax Amendment Tax, the GRA said it will be charging a minimum of 5% on firms that will be declaring loses for 5 years.

  • Gabby’s’alleged galamsey lord” client was a sales manager at Viasat 1- Baba Sadiq

Gabby’s’alleged galamsey lord” client was a sales manager at Viasat 1- Baba Sadiq

NDC communications team member Baba Sadiq Abdulai has revealed employment details about Donald Entsuah, an illegal small-scale miner (galamsey).

Enstuah and his company A&C Alaska and Heritage Imperial Mining were severally mentioned in a galamsey report authored by former environment minister Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng.

It is also confirmed that Entsuah’s lawyer is Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a cousin of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who was also labeled as complicit in interfering in the minister and the galamsey taskforce’ work.

Baba Sadiq revealed that Enstuah was a professional colleague years back as erstwhile Viasat 1 TV station where he was the sales manager.

“You remember Erastus Asare Donkor did an investigative documentary where one of the companies he focused on was the same Imperial Mining which Gabby is today claiming that they were doing prospecting.

“If you see all the videos that came out at the time, nobody will tell you it was pure mining and not prospecting as claimed. Rather interestingly, you will see the linkage. The person involved, Donald Entsuah, the A&C Alaska guy was my colleague at Viasat 1.

“He was a sales manager working in the media. But his friends are the likes of Gabby, Kwaku Baako and Egbert Faibille…” he said during an appearance on Onua TV’s morning show, Onua Maakye show of March 26, 2023.

In his report submitted in 2021 to the chief of staff, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng alleged that a group of journalists came after him with false publications when he was the chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Small Scale Mining (IMCIM).

He singled out, senior journalist Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, a member of the Coffee Shop Mafia.

Prof Frimpong-Boateng in his report revealed that Kweku Baako and Gabby Otchere Darko personally accosted him regarding a raid the IMCIM taskforce conducted on an illegal mining operation by C&J Alaska in the Diaso Forest Reserve. The IMCIM task force led by Charles Bissue successfully dislodged armed military personnel stationed at the location to safeguard the illegal mining company.

Prof. Frimpong Boateng claims that Kweku Baako called him later and disclosed that the C&J Alaska managers were his cronies, indicating his personal interest in C&J Alaska.

Kwaku Baako’s newspaper at the height of the IMCIM work, published a series of critical articles on Prof. Frimpong Boateng and the IMCIM for closing down C&J Alaska’s mining operation. Prof. Frimpong Boateng characterized Kwaku Baako as a “ferocious assailant” who wrote unflattering things about him.

“I, in particular, came under severe assault. Mr. Kweku Baako, a journalist who contacted me to inform me that the C&J managers were his friends, was a vicious aggressor. “At the time, Mr. Baako published unsavoury things about me,” he noted in the report.

But speaking on Onua TV, Baba Sadiq maintained that the publications by Kweku Baako’s newspaper were all part of the clandestine activities of the Coffee Shop Mafia aimed at protecting their interests in the illegal mining cartel.

“The whole essence of the Coffee Shop Mafia is blackmail and extortion. Which politician doesn’t know this? Ask every senior politician and they will tell you. Frimpong-Boateng spoke about it when he said some journalists were sabotaging his good work by publishing stories about him and threatening him. Is this not extortion and blackmail? It is pure blackmail and extortion,” he stressed.

  • Iranian drones employed by Russia in Ukraine were powered by Western technology – study reveals

Iranian drones employed by Russia in Ukraine were powered by Western technology – study reveals

The extent to which Iran has developed a potent weapons industry based on Western technology and the manner in which Russia employs that technology against Ukrainian cities have both been made clear by new studies.

The Shahed-136 drones were sold to Russia by Iran, and Conflict Armament Research (CAR), a UK-based organization that studies the parts of weapons, has determined that they are powered by an engine based on German technology that Iran illegally acquired almost 20 years ago.

The discovery, which was uncovered after a thorough investigation of parts found in Ukraine and shared only with CNN, highlights Iran’s capacity to imitate and expertly manipulate military technology it has illegally stolen.

Western officials are also concerned that Russia may share Western-made weapons and equipment recovered on the Ukrainian battlefield with the Iranians. So far, there’s no firm evidence that has happened.

However, relations between Tehran and Moscow have grown much closer. Russia wants Iranian drones and ballistic missiles; Iran wants Russian investment and trade. Russia has become the largest foreign investor in Iran over the past year, according to Iranian officials.

And for the Russians, Iranian drones are a bargain substitute for much more costly missiles, stocks of which are dwindling, according to Western officials. Experts believe that a Shahed-186, for example, costs about $20,000, a tiny fraction of the cost of a Kalibr cruise missile.

Last October, the head of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, said Russia had ordered about 1,700 Iranian drones of different types. Ukraine has proved adept at taking down the Shahed-136, but that depletes its already scarce anti-aircraft defenses. Despite a relatively low explosive charge, at up to 40 kilograms (88 pounds), an accurate strike by a Shahed-136 can still cause extensive damage.

Between November last year and March 2023, CAR was able to examine components in 20 Iranian-made drones and munitions in Ukraine, about half of them Shahed-136s.

It was able to confirm that the motor in the Shahed-136 was reverse-engineered by an Iranian company called Oje Parvaz Mado Nafar – known as Mado – based in the town of Shokuhieh in Qom province. The company was sanctioned by the UK, US and European Union in December last year.

CAR researchers found Mado’s markings on spark plug caps in the drone’s engines, as well as serial number sequences used by Mado.

Mado plays a crucial role in Iran’s expansive drone industry, according to Western governments and the United Nations. The same serial number pattern was also noted by UN investigators examining drone attacks on Saudi Arabia allegedly carried out by Iran’s Houthi allies in Yemen – as well as missile attacks last year against Abu Dhabi, one of the United Arab Emirates.

Taimur Khan, Gulf analyst at CAR, told CNN that Iran’s UAV systems are constantly being refined and modernized and “have proven to be increasingly accurate in terms of their targeting and guidance systems as well as the counter-jamming capabilities.”

CNN on scene in Kyiv after self-detonating drones hit Ukrainian capital (Oct 2022)

The design of Mado’s engine speaks to an intense Iranian effort stretching back some 20 years to acquire Western technology for its drones and missiles in the face of widespread international sanctions.

In 2006, Iran illicitly acquired drone engines made by the German company Limbach Flugmotoren. Three years later, an Iranian engineer called Yousef Aboutalebi announced his company had built a UAV engine.

    That company would become Mado.

The company appears to have tried to conceal its role in the construction of the Shaheds, according to CAR. Its investigators found that original serial numbers on drone components found in Ukraine had been erased, in an apparent effort to disguise their origin.

“These modifications have prevented investigators from identifying the acquisition networks facilitating the international supply of key components into Iran,” CAR says.

Among other Western components acquired and copied by Iran are Czech-made missile parts. A UN experts’ report in 2020 said that the engine in Iran’s Quds-1 missiles used in attacks on Saudi oil refineries the previous year “was “an unlicensed copy of the TJ-100 jet engine manufactured by PBS Velká Bíteš” in the Czech Republic.

Experts say the Czech engine also appears to have been installed on Iran’s Heidar-2 missile.

The company said it had never supplied the engine to Iran or Yemen, but Iran has become expert at evading controls on sensitive technology, in some instances using front companies. A UN panel found that parts exported by the Czech manufacturer to a company in Hong Kong in 2010 ended up in Iranian missiles used in 2019.

Taimur Khan, at CAR, says that Iran has “acquired Western components and technologies for its UAV programme by taking advantage of the lack of supply chain visibility,” which makes identifying components a critical technique in improving export control and sanction mechanisms.

The drone sales have deepened Iran’s relations with Russia, which were already strengthening as the two countries were increasingly locked out of international commerce and the financial system.

“We define our relations with Russia as strategic and we are working together in many aspects, especially economic relations,” Finance Minister Ehsan Khandouzi told the Financial Times last month.

The revenues from the sale of hundreds of Shahed-136 drones to Russia will likely be reinvested in further improving the industry. And the partnership may begin to explore new territory.

Khan believes that “given the fact that Russia is capturing sophisticated Western weapons on the battlefield – such as the Javelin anti-tank missile – and that there is increasing military cooperation between the two countries, and Iran has proven capabilities in this regard, I think it’s likely that they will collaborate on copying these types of systems.”

There is also the possibility that Russia will leverage its cooperation with Iran to develop its own military drone capabilities.

But until that happens, Russia’s military will likely remain an eager customer for hundreds more drones from Iran, a state that has made evading sanctions to build an indigenous weapons industry a fine art.

Madina MP calls for probe into allegations in Frimpong-Boateng’s galamsey report

Member of Parliament for the Madina Constituency, Lawyer Francis-Xavier Sosu, is the latest to call for a probe into the claims in the Professor Frimpong-Boateng’s exposé about illegal mining or galmsey.

He has called for an independent commission to be set up to investigate the issues that have emerged from the report.

Lawyer Sosu criticised the government’s fight against illegal mining and said officials of the Akufo-Addo administration is only good at saying one thing and doing the opposite especially when the public is not watching.

Sosu was speaking to the media at the 2023 National Youth Conference (NYC) on natural resources and environmental governance,

“The galamsey fight has been a very disappointing one and the government has failed Ghanaians, especially in the wake of the revelations coming out of Professor Frimpong-Boateng’s galamsey report,” he said.

“Promises and commitments made by the government must be backed with actions. The government can sometimes make beautiful commitments to afforestation, and beautiful commitments to the protection of the environment, and yet at the blind side of all Ghanaians, they will be the ones leading the degradation of the environment and for me, that is hypocrisy, that is bad faith and that is not taking Ghanaians seriously.”

He further accused the government of suffering from policy crises and urged Ghanaians to demand accountability for the promises and commitments it makes.

“The government is suffering from serious policy crises because for every promise that the government makes, the credibility of those promises all always questionable.

“There is a need for all of us to call for a right to climate change, and have a more modern approach to dealing with issues having to do with climate change.”

  • Why Sammy Gyamfi thinks Jubilee House is now a crime scene

Why Sammy Gyamfi thinks Jubilee House is now a crime scene

The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has described Jubilee House, which is the seat of government in Ghana, a “crime scene.”

According to Gyamfi, the complex has become a place for illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) activities in the country, and that the galamsey report by Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng is proof of his claim.

“Professor Frimpong-Boateng is not an ordinary person talking but this was the man who was in charge of the fight and he has not just written a report and kept under his bed but submitted it to the presidency and indicated that he is ready to substantiate those allegations.
“In fact, in some of the instances, he has even given us evidences including videos, pictures and messages and so we must get to the bottom of these issues.
“Then he talks about the former NPP MP for Manso Nkwanta who under the guise of community mining also acquired a lot of concessions. So you see, the Jubilee House today is a crime scene,” he stated on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show on Thursday, April 27, 2023.

He criticized President Akufo-Addo for not taking any action on the report submitted by Professor Frimpong-Boateng, who was in charge of the fight against galamsey in the first term of Akufo-Addo’s government.

Gyamfi emphasized that Frimpong-Boateng is a reputable individual and had submitted evidence to substantiate his allegations against some appointees in the Jubilee House.

Professor Frimpong-Boateng, who was the former Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining, accused some individuals in government of frustrating his efforts to fight illegal mining activities when he was a minister.

He submitted a document that contained the names of people he claimed were interfering with the committee’s work. In the document, he mentioned that party officials had engaged in illegal mining activities and that there were appointees in the Jubilee House supporting the menace.

Some individuals mentioned in the report, including President Akufo-Addo’s cousin Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, have denied the allegations. Otchere-Darko explained that he only called Frimpong-Boateng to seek information on his client, a company that had permits to mine in the country.

He added that the Minister deliberately twisted his mediation to cause public disaffection for him.

  • GUTA hints of price hikes effective May 1

GUTA hints of price hikes effective May 1

Effective May 1, 2023, prices of some products in the market will go up, according to President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Dr Joseph Obeng.

This follows the implementation of three new tax measures by the government, namely the Excise Duty, the Income Tax Amendment Acts, and the Growth and Sustainability Act, which were passed by Parliament despite opposition from the Minority and the business community.

Dr Obeng emphasized that since businesses and consumers are interdependent, any challenges faced by businesses will ultimately impact the consumers

Consequently, GUTA intends to pass on the extra costs incurred from the taxes to consumers. He explained that this would likely worsen the current inflation rate, causing more hardship for consumers.

“The business that we do, we do not do in isolation, we do with the consuming public so whatever affects the business community, the rippling effect goes to the consumer. As a matter of fact, it’s a cycle, whatever target is being enjoyed by one will be given to the end user and this is what is going to happen.

“So I can foresee that it’s going to compound the inflation that we are even experiencing, and the plight of the consuming public,” he explained in an interview on Joy Midday News on Thursday, April 27, 2023.

The GUTA President expressed disappointment in the government for failing to engage with them before implementing the taxes, despite their calls to suspend their implementation.

GUTA had hoped that government would consider possible revisions to the taxes to ease the burden on businesses and allow them to grow.

Nonetheless, GUTA intends to work with its stakeholders in the business community to get its petition for tax revision heard by the government.

“All that we sought was for government to engage with this so that if there could be any possible revision that we can give some respite for the businesses to grow, it would have been very helpful to businesses,” Mr Obeng said.

Companies have until the end of the month to adjust their systems to accommodate the new taxes, according to guidelines released by the Ghana Revenue Authority.

The Excise Duty and the Income Tax Amendment Acts comes into effect on May 1, 2023.

  • More than 4 million Ghanaians don’t have access to the internet – Report

More than 4 million Ghanaians don’t have access to the internet – Report

The Ghana Statistical Service has revealed in a report that over 4 million people in the working age bracket (15 to 60 years) did not use the internet for three months before the last census.

The report also said, vulnerable populations notably children who have never attended school, the multidimensionally poor, and persons with disabilities are at high risk of digital exclusion and the success of Ghana’s digital economy agenda hinges on bridging the digital divides.

The Government Statistician, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim who was speaking at the program on Thursday April 27, 2023 to launch the StatsBank and to also release the 2021 population and housing census thematic brief on digital exclusion in Ghana at Accra has also indicated that “5.1 million persons in Ghana aged 6 years and older were digitally excluded i.e. they did not use an ICT device in the three months before Census”.

This represents about one in every five (19.6%) persons 6 years and older.

Further, three in every ten persons (31.4%) in this age group did not use the Internet in the three months.

Concerning digital financial inclusion, the Professor said, “Over one-third (36.7%) of adults 18 years and older did not use a mobile device for a financial transaction in the previous three months.

Nationally the digital divide by sex, which is the difference between males and females in the percentage that did not use ICT devices is 2.7 percentage points”.

“The divide is largest for the age group 61 years and older (16.6 percentage points difference) and the age group 6 to 14 years is the only category where a higher proportion of males did not use an ICT device relative to females.

He said the difference in the percentage of persons that did not use ICT devices and that of Greater Accra exceeded 20 percentage points in six regions – Savannah (37.3 percentage points), North East (34.9 percentage points), Northern (29.1 percentage points), Upper West (26.9 percentage points), Oti (24.0 percentage points), and Upper East (23.2 percentage points).

In her remarks, Dr. Grace Bediako, the Chair of the GSS Governing Board of the GSS highlighted the importance of the event whose focus was using data to project not just the population but most importantly girls in this digital age.

She noted the release would “demonstrate the utility of these statistics, making statistics widely available and gain insights into digital exclusion”. She continued with the importance of generating gender-sensitive statistics for decision-making and said that “gender gaps can only be addressed by tackling them head on” – which only be done with gender-sensitive statistics.

She concluded with the importance of the StatsBank and noted the census was a significant national exercise and it is, therefore the responsibility of the stakeholders to ensure that the data is used to the fullest.

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) for the first time has developed an online database for accessing disaggregated census statistics.

The GSS StatsBank, which contains over 300 million unique statistics from the published 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC) will allow users to generate customized tables and maps at the national, and sub-national levels at no cost.

The development of the StatsBank is part of GSS’ commitment to utilizing innovative and user-friendly methods to disseminate findings from Ghana’s first fully digital census and promote the uptake of the data for decision-making.

  • NHIS: Health facilities charging illegal fees to be sanctioned – Okoe Boye

Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Bernard Okoe Boye, says the authority will go after “unscrupulous” health facilities under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) charging illegal fees and bring them to book.

He said this is to clamp down on unscrupulous persons engaging in the act and bringing the scheme into disrepute.

“Very soon we are going to invite some of the heads of hospitals who we have sent teams to and have brought us reports of the practice of illegal charges in their facilities,” he said at the commissioning of a new NHIS office at Ejisu in the Ashanti Region.

The CEO said the Government was committed to ensuring the sustainability of the NHIS, saying that, what Ghanaians had to do was to report anomalies at the facilities to the Scheme to help improve on service delivery.

He further disclosed that claims paid to health facilities on a monthly basis by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) for their services to patients rolled unto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has been increased from GH¢100 million to GH¢ 150 million.

This, according to Chief Executive Officer of the scheme is an increase of 50% in the amount previously paid.

Speaking at the commissioning of a new NHIS office at Ejisu in the Ashanti Region, he said: “I can tell you that every month we pay an average of GHC 150 million to health facilities across Ghana for attending to NHIS clients.”

He explained that the increment is “due to the movement of the currency and inflationary pressures.”

The newly commissioned offices would be a permanent one for the Ejisu and Juaben Municipalities after years of operating in rented offices.

Dr. Okoe Boye said despite challenges facing the Scheme it remained one of the most impactful interventions introduced by successive governments.

Untreated toothache could kill you – IMaH Dentist

A dentist at the International Maritime Hospital (IMaH), Dr Mensah Tabi-Amankwa has indicated that it is possible for a person to die from a tooth infection if left untreated.

Dr Tabi-Amankwa noted that tooth infections like sores and ulcers in the mouth could spread beyond the jaw and cause life-threatening complications by blocking off the airway going down the throat.

Dr Tabi-Amankwa made the disclosure at the weekly “Your Health! Our Collective Responsibility,” platform, a Ghana News Agency Tema Regional Office initiative aimed at promoting communication on health-related topics and setting the medium for the propagation of health information to influence personal health choices by improving health literacy.

The GNA-Tema: Your Health! Our Collective Responsibility initiative also serves as a public health advocacy platform initiated to explore the parameters of the four approaches to health communication: informative, educating, persuasive, and prompting.

Speaking on the topic “Oral Health,” the IMaH Dentist explained that, any sore in the mouth that did not cause pain and extend beyond three weeks without healing could be an early sign of cancer.

Adding to that, stress also caused ulcers inside and at the corners of the mouth, which was an indication that nutrients like iron or vitamin B12 in the body were not properly balanced.

He said sometimes a hole in the tooth did not cause pain but, if left unattended, could generate a swollen face that could spread to other parts of the body.

He described cavities as a loss of tooth tissue that progressed to food getting stacked into the hole and, with time, transitioned to constant pain, difficulty taking cold water, and finally to a facial swell.

He said the situation could be severe, spreading infection that were caused by a bacteria in the tooth and capable of breaking down some of the body tissue and producing toxic by-products, so it could spread further to the neck, preventing eating and swallowing and eventually suffocating the patient to death.

Mr Francis Ameyibor, Regional Manager of Ghana News Agency Tema, explained that “Your Health! Our Collective Responsibility” is part of a collaborative effort to establish a means for the dissemination of health information in order to influence individual health decisions by increasing health literacy.

He also stated that it aimed to use the communication abilities of the GNA and medical professionals to inform the public that everyone’s health was important and should be prioritized.

  • Breaking: Gregory Afoko acquitted; his accomplice sentenced to death

Brother of Paul Afoko, former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gregory Afoko, has been acquitted by an Accra High Court following a hung jury.

He is expected to face another trial over the murder of Alhaji Adams Mahama, an Upper East Region Chairman of the NPP, in 2015.

Alhaji Mahama was murdered after acid was poured on him in a plot said to have been masterminded by Gregory Afoko with the support of Asabke Alangdi.

Alangdi was on Thursday, April 27 unanimously found guilty for conspiracy to commit murder by the seven-member jury. He has been sentenced to death.

In the case of Afoko, the jury returned a 4:3 verdict over the charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Lawyers of Asabke Alangdi have served notice they will appeal the death sentence.

“How can a person conspired against himself, be found guilty and the person that he was accused of conspiring with is found not guilty,” one of the lawyers said.

Meet Pearl, the world’s shortest dog

Pearl is no ordinary handbag dog. She’s so tiny, her owner can just slip her into her pocket.

The two-year-old chihuahua, who measures around the same length as a dollar bill, has been named the world’s shortest dog by Guinness World Records.

Born in Florida on September 1 2020, Pearl is shorter than a Popsicle stick at just 3.59 inches tall. She is 5 inches long – around the same as a dollar bill – and weighs a tiny 1.22 pounds, a huge gain on the less than one ounce that she weighed at birth.

Pearl is related to previous record holder Miracle Milly, who measured 3.8 inches tall. She died in 2020, before Pearl was born. Pearl’s mother is one of Milly’s identical sisters, according to Guinness World Records.

Her owner Vanesa Semler, who was also the owner of Miracle Milly, told Guinness World Records: “We’re blessed to have her. And to have this unique opportunity to break our own record and share with the world this amazing news.”

Pearl was recently unveiled on “Lo Show Dei Record,” Guinness’ TV talent show in Italy.

Appearing alongside her at the studio in Milan, Semler said Pearl was “a bit of a diva,” though she seemed calm and unfazed in front of the live studio audience.

Semler is the owner of three other dogs, all of whom are of “normal” size, she said.

Describing her pet as “small like a ball” and slightly taller than a teacup, Semler said Pearl is accustomed to a high quality diet of chicken and salmon.

She also loves “dressing up nice,” according to Semler. “We have lots of fun together,” she said, adding that her adult dog is still a “child at heart.”

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) pays an average of GHC150 million in claims monthly to health facilities across the country, Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, Chief Executive Officer of the scheme has said.

This is an increase of about 50% from the amount previously paid by the Authority.

“I can tell you that every month we pay an average of GHC 150 million to health facilities across Ghana for attending to NHIS clients,” he said at the commissioning of a new NHIS office at Ejisu in the Ashanti Region.

He further said, “This figure was about GHC 100 million some seven months ago, but we have increased it by close to 50 per cent due to the movement of the currency and inflationary pressures.”

The newly commissioned offices would be a permanent one for the Ejisu and Juaben Municipalities after years of operating in rented offices.

Management of the Scheme after paying huge sums of money for renting the previous office, approached the Chief of Ejisu, Nana Afrane Okese who then donated the land for the construction of the new edifice.

Dr. Okoe Boye said despite challenges facing the Scheme it remained one of the most impactful interventions introduced by successive governments.

He said it was very important for every citizen to hold an NHIS card to be able to access affordable healthcare as a citizen with inalienable rights to quality healthcare.

He expressed concern that some unscrupulous persons in health facilities continued to take illegal charges from clients, adding that, steps were being taken to monitor activities of such people and bring them to book.

“Very soon we are going to invite some of the heads of hospitals who we have sent teams to and have brought us reports of the practice of illegal charges in their facilities,” he said.

The CEO said the Government was committed to ensuring the sustainability of the NHIS, saying that, what Ghanaians had to do was to report anomalies at the facilities to the Scheme to help improve on service delivery.

He paid glowing tribute to the Chief of Ejisu for providing the land for the project free of charge and assured the people of Ejisu and its environs of quality service delivery.

Mr. Samuel Oduro, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), said the role of the NHIS in the lives of the citizenry could not be overemphasised considering the importance of the health of the people.

He said the Scheme had come a long way from manual registration to the current use of technology by clients to enrol or renew their membership.

The MCE said the introduction of the NHIS had significantly increased Out- Patient Department (OPD) attendance due to the elimination of the “cash and carry” system which was denying the poor access to healthcare.

Nana Afrane Okese, the Chief of Ejisu in an address read on his behalf commended the Authority for putting up a befitting office for its staff.

He appealed to the Ejisu staff of the Scheme to adopt friendly and polite customer service attitude when attending to their clients and also pledged his continuous support to the office as the traditional leader.

  • Fugees rapper Pras Michel to face 20 years in jail

Fugees rapper Pras Michel to face 20 years in jail

Rapper Pras Michel, well known for being a part of the Fugees, has been found guilty of a felony for allegedly participating in a multimillion dollar political conspiracy.

Born Prakazrel Samuel Michel, the musician was found guilty by a federal jury of “orchestrating an unregistered, back-channel campaign” to persuade the Department of Justice and the then-US President’s administration to drop the 1MDB investigation, which was related to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal, and is said to have started around 2017.

It’s been said by US prosecutors that the 50-year-old received more than $100million (£80m) from Malaysian billionaire Jho Low in an attempt to sway American politics.

Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio previously testified in the case, taking to the stand earlier this month after being friends with Low for several years. He was not accused of any wrongdoing, and appeared in court as a witness.

Michel faced charges of conspiring with the financier to orchestrate illegal lobbying campaigns to influence the US government when Barack Obama and Donald Trump were in power during their respective tenures in the White House.

In a statement, Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A Polite Jr said: ‘As proven at trial, the defendant engaged in an extensive conspiracy to use millions of dollars in foreign funds to engage in illegal back-channel lobbying and make unlawful campaign contributions.

‘Today’s verdict demonstrates that anyone who engages in unlawful foreign-sponsored efforts to influence American officials, our elections, or the criminal justice system will be brought to justice.’

As outlined by the US Department of Justice, court documents and evidence presented at the trial showed that Michel conspired with several individuals ‘to engage in undisclosed lobbying campaigns’ with the aim of having ‘the 1MDB embezzlement investigation and forfeiture proceedings involving Low and others dropped and to have a Chinese national sent back to China’.

On the witness stand, Michel claimed that a $20m (£16m) sum that Low paid him over the course of nine months in 2012 was to help the financier have a photo with Obama.

The rapper stated that he used some of the money to pay for three friends to attend two political fundraisers during Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign, but denied doing so under Low’s instruction.

The musician alleged that he was never told by his attorney George Higgenbotham – who has pleaded guilty for his role in the scheme – that it was required by law to register as a foreign agent, after failing to do so.

The Fugees star also claimed that he passed information to the FBI regarding China’s desire to have Chinese billionaire and dissident Guo Wengui extradited, amid concerns that Guo was ‘allegedly a criminal rapist’, stating that he ‘thought it was something the FBI should know’.

‘Mr Michel sought to use his celebrity and access to influence US government officials on behalf of undisclosed foreign interests,’ said Assistant Attorney General Matthew G Olsen.

‘This is an affront to the rule of law, and we will use the full range of tools at our disposal to hold accountable those who would covertly aid foreign actors seeking to interfere with our democratic system of government.’

Michel could face up to 20 years in jail for his convictions, which include conspiracy, concealment of material facts, making false entries in record, witness tampering and serving as an unregistered agent of a foreign power. A sentencing date is yet to be set.

Speaking outside the court with his client by his side, Michel’s attorney said: ‘We are extremely disappointed in that result but are very, very confident in the ultimate outcome of this case.

‘If we do move to a sentencing hearing I remain very confident we will certainly appeal this case. This is not over.’

Harry A Lidsky, Special Agent in Charge of the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General Cyber Investigations Office, said that the rapper ‘played a central role in a wide-ranging conspiracy’.

‘The defendant brazenly conspired to help a foreign national launder millions of dollars in illegitimate campaign contributions into the 2012 U.S. presidential election,’ Assistant Director Luis Quesada of the FBI’s Criminal Investigative Division stated.

‘Unidentified military device’ discovered in a Polish forest raises questions

In a Polish forest, pieces of a ‘unidentified military device‘ were found.

On social media, rumors are already circulating regarding the provenance of the bones found close to the town of Zamo, which is located approximately nine miles from Bydgoscz.

On Twitter, the Ministry of Defense acknowledged the discovery while emphasizing that it poses no threat to the security of locals.

The remnants of an unnamed military complex were discovered close to the town of Zamo, which is roughly 15 kilometers from Bydgoszcz, according to a statement.

“The situation does not jeopardize locals’ safety.” The location of the discovery is being looked into by police, military police, and sappers.

Authorities are yet to identify the object, or say how long it has been in the area.

Broadcaster RMF FM reported that it was an air-to-surface missile measuring at least several metres, stuck in the ground, with its head missing. But no sources were identified in the report.

Poland has been on high alert for possible spillover of weaponry from the war in neighbouring Ukraine.

In November, two people were killed near the border by what Warsaw concluded was a misfired Ukrainian air defence missile.

The area where the object was found is hundreds of miles from the borders with Ukraine, Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

  • Jerry Springer revolutionized television in every way

Jerry Springer revolutionized television in every way

It was confirmed on Thursday that Jerry Springer, one of the world’s most famous ever chat show hosts, has died at the age of 79 and the news will come as a blow to the entire entertainment industry.

Springer’s television career was as illustrious as they come and the TV icon was famed for his hit programme, The Jerry Springer Show, which was on screens for 27 years and racked up nearly 4000 episodes.

From screaming matches to full-on fistfights, The Jerry Springer Show quickly caught the world’s attention when it first hit televisions in the early 90s.

Thanks to Springer, talkshows were no longer a slow-paced, sleepy affair. Now there was chanting, tears and bodyguards a-plenty.

Of course, the fact that Springer totally transformed the face of television wasn’t lost on him.

Speaking in 2019, the English-born star said on an episode of Good Morning Britain: ‘It [gave a platform] to the people who make up the country.

‘I think that I’m proud it turned out to be a successful show, but the show was always nothing but a circus.

‘Up until that time television was always upper-middle class white and everyone on television reflected upper-middle class living. It really was the first time we saw a slice of the people that make up the country.’

He’ll be remembered as a cultural icon, not only for his TV work, but also for his time as the mayor of Cincinnati, not to mention his endeavours as a lawyer and an award-winning newscaster.

Springer’s colourful political career saw him become Robert F. Kennedy’s campaign adviser before he ran for Congress himself in 1970.

He also landed a role on Broadway, hosted podcasts, wrote books and even competed on Dancing with the Stars.

What’s more, Springer held a degree in political science from Tulane University and also earned a law degree from Northwestern University.

In 1971, Springer turned to local government and won a seat on the Cincinnati City Council. By 33, he was the city’s mayor.

His career as an anchor kicked off in 1982 when Springer signed with WLWT and his popular segments soon earned him loyal fans.

Over the course of his time covering news at WLWT, Springer racked up an impressive eight regional Emmys.

By 1991, he’d been offered his very own talk show and by 1998 was no longer a regional name, but one of America’s most popular commentators.

Between January 1998 and May 1999, Springer surpassed The Oprah Winfrey Show’s highest household rating.

Before long, Springer had his very own Madame Tussauds statue and had even featured in an episode of The Simpsons.

His career had well and truly gone stratospheric, and Springer not only made an appearance in Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me but was listed by Barbara Walters as one of her 10 Most Fascinating People.

In 2019, Springer launched his new show, Judge Jerry, in which he took on real-life small-claims disputes, hearing cases and rendering verdicts.

A family spokesperson confirmed on Thursday that Springer had been diagnosed with cancer a few months ago and that the star took a turn for the worse and died at his home in Chicago.

They said in a statement: ‘Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word.

‘He’s irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart and humour will live on.’

One thing’s for sure, Springer will be remembered as one of TV’s most influential figures of all time.

North Korea builds two skyscrapers with phallic shapes that “resemble Kim’s favorite missiles

Missile-mad In Pyongyang, Kim Jong-un had two new towers constructed to replicate his “most powerful” rockets.

The two towers were unveiled last week in the brand-new Hwasong neighborhood, which is named after the Hwasong missile family used by North Korea.

And it appears that the similarities between the towers and the rocket is no accident; the state-run newspaper Rodong Sinmun specifically noted it in its columns.

The paper bragged: ‘The two high-rise residential houses rising side by side toward the sky in the Hwasong district seem to resemble Hwasong missiles, the pride of our country, as the name suggests.’

It also compared the ‘height reached by the Hwasong cannons flying towards the universe’ with that of the ‘grand and splendid scenery of the streets of Pyongyang’.

Regime newsreel footage reveals the inside of one tower, showing party cadres in its well-stocked supermarket and taking in the view from a new apartment.

It comes just days after Kim debuted his new Hwasong-18 missile, which Pyongyang calls its ‘most powerful, pivotal and principal means’ of defence.

The regime says the skyscrapers were built ‘for the people’ but with growing numbers of North Koreans teetering on the edge of starvation, experts aren’t so sure.

Markus Bell, a research fellow at La Trobe University in Australia, said: ‘Lopsided development has unequally benefitted denizens of Pyongyang.

‘The construction of these flashy ‘rocket apartments’ will benefit the most politically connected and the wealthiest of North Korea’s elite.

‘Ordinary people will not be able to afford to live in these apartments, in much the same way as ordinary people can’t afford to live in Kensington and Chelsea, and Islington.

‘Economically and materially, the construction of showcase buildings such as these does little to nothing to help regular North Koreans.’

Dr Bell also claimed the missile-like design was another method of linking the Kims to the Pyongyang skyline.

He said: ‘The missile program is a legacy project, the young leader having inherited it from his father and his grandfather.

‘The construction of these apartment blocks are symbolic in the ideological feedback loop that tells the country and, to a lesser extent, the world that the Kim’s are Korea and Korea is the Kims.’

Earlier this week, Kim launched one of the powerful Hwasong-18 rockets from what appeared to be his private golf course.

‘Basically it’s a threat’ said North Korea expert Jacob Bogle, who said the move was Kim’s way of saying ‘we can do this from anywhere and if you attack our dedicated ballistic missiles bases, we can still drive off to a random golf course or wherever and launch a nuke.’

Controversial journalist Kemi Olunloyo has discussed the alleged altercation between Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, better known as Davido, and his friend Pascal Chibuike Okechukwu, also known as Cubana Chiefpriest.

An unclear argument caused the besties to unfollow each other on Instagram which sparked conversation among social media users.

Days before Davido’s Timeless concert, Chiefpriest ceased publicizing it on his Instagram, and the two parties subsequently stopped following one another.

Unexpectedly, Chiefpriest also skipped the Sunday night Timeless concert which was held in Lagos.

The flamboyant socialite uploaded videos of his night out with friends to his Instagram Story channel.

Kemi Olunloyo commented on the supposed split on Instagram and claimed that Chiefpriest leaked information about Davido’s second baby mama, Amanda, being pregnant in Atlanta for the superstar.

According to Kemi, Davido and his wife Chioma were separated before the singer had an encounter with his second baby mama again.

Additionally, she urged fans to counsel Chioma on how to handle the surprising change of events.

She wrote: Davido and Cubana chief priest will be ok. They are reportedly beefing because Pasquale allegedly leaked Hermaidne’s pregnancy but Davido and Chioma were separated when Belle happened. What advice do you have for Chioma?

Portugal must openly acknowledge its role in transatlantic slave trade – President Mercelo Rebelo

During Portugal’s yearly commemoration of the “Carnation” revolution of 1974, which toppled the country’s dictatorship, President Mercelo Rebelo de Sousa said that the country should do more than just apologize, though he did not elaborate.According to him, his country must apologize and take ownership of its role in the transatlantic slave trade. This is the first time the leader of the southern European nation has suggested a formal national apology.

Between the 15th and the 19th centuries, six million Africans were kidnapped and forcibly transported by Portuguese ships across the Atlantic, where the majority of them were sold into slavery in Brazil.

However, Portugal hasn’t discussed its past all that much, and schools don’t teach much about its role in the slave trade. Rather, the country’s colonial era, which subjugated countries including Angola, Mozambique, Brazil, Cape Verde and East Timor as well as Ghana, parts of India and West Africa is often perceived as a source of pride by most Portuguese.

The president said that the nation should “assume responsibility” for its history in order to create a better future. “Sometimes, apologising is the easiest thing to do. “You apologise, turn your back, and the job is done,” he said.

Europe’s top human rights group previously said Portugal had to do more to confront its colonial past and role in the transatlantic slave trade in order to help fight racism and discrimination today.

Immediately following Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s speech to the Portuguese parliament, Rebelo de Sousa made the statements. Lula da Silva was in Portugal for the first time since taking office. In 1822, Portugal was forced to cede control of Brazil.

Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture organises training programme for drivers in Kumasi

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has organized a training programme for some drivers in Kumasi to equip them with skills needed to improve the tourism sector.

The programme was executed by the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC), an agency under the wings of the ministry tasked to, among others, oversee the development of tourism in the country.

“President Akufo-Addo is enthused about tourism because of the value it possesses. Consequently, he is poised to see the sector progress and these are some of the measures for a smooth execution,” said Mark Okraku-Mantey, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture during a brief speech.

Lauretta Kuadey, GTDC Projects Manager reiterated to the media after the first phase of the programme that it was imperative drivers were trained on how to interact with tourists considering that visitors engage their services to their respective destinations, stressing that drivers are ambassadors of tourism.

“We decided to train drivers within the tourism sector as we have identified their role in promoting tourism,” she said. “They are the front liners who meet tourists when they arrive in the country and so this programme will help propagate the good news of the tourism sector, prospects and everything. If tourists arrive, they can tell them potential places to visit.”

Ms. Kuadey disclosed that a total of three thousand (3000) drivers have been trained for the first phase and “we hope to make it bigger in the future”.

Aside from the training the drivers received, they were given “certificates for participation, bumper stickers and some t-shirts” as a reward for making themselves available for the exercise.

Mohammed Salisu to be benched against Bournemouth after groin injury

Mohammed Salisu, a defender for Southampton, is expected to miss the team’s upcoming Premier League match against Bournemouth as he continues to recover from a groin injury.

Due to the problem, the Ghanaian center back has missed the last few games.

Mohammed Salisu is sidelined with a groin issue, according to Southampton assistant coach Ruben Selles, who also added that Salisu is working his way back from the injury.

Salisu joined the Saints in 2020 from Spanish side Real Valladolid, but he has struggled with injuries during his time in England. Despite that, he has shown promising signs when he has been fit to play.

Southampton, who are currently bottom of the Premier League table and fighting to avoid relegation, will be hoping for a win against Bournemouth on Thursday to boost their chances of survival. The return of striker Che Adams, who has been out of action due to a calf problem, will be a welcome boost for the team.

Selles also gave updates on other Southampton players during his pre-match press conference, saying: “Ainsley Maitland-Niles was ineligible for that match against his parent club but the Gunners loanee is now back available, though it’s not good news for Salisu or Tino Livramento, who is still working his way back to full fitness after a year out with a serious knee injury. Teenage defender Juan Larios is also out until the end of the season with a thigh issue.”

Southampton will be hoping for a positive result against Bournemouth as they look to climb out of the relegation zone with just six games remaining in the season.

Worst president in Ghana’s history – Dr Steve Manteaw tags Akufo-Addo

Chairman of Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, Dr. Steve Manteaw, is disappointed in President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s handling of illegal small-scale mining activities popularly known as galamsey.

According to Dr. Steve Manteaw, the president’s reluctance in carrying out an investigation with regards to the 2021 report authored by Professor Frimpong Boateng, former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation and ex-chair of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining’s (IMCIM).

“…a president who has sworn to fight against galamsey…a former cabinet minister has given you a hint on what is happening for you to take a step…but it seems that this president doesn’t care about anything. And this is my greatest worry because, all that is going on under his government is a written history, which would not affect only him but the entire generation to come, and gradually this president is going down in history as the worse president we have ever had.” he saidsSpeaking in an interview with Neat FM on April 26, 2023

“When it comes to corruption, then he will say if you want to lay an allegation bring evidence, my brother we have state agencies that are in charge of investigations but as a citizen, if I give you thumps up about an issue, then you tell me to go and investigate and bring evidence, how? If you are somebody who is serious, the moment you hear something you will let the security agencies take charge, you won’t demand evidence because you have people that we have paid to do that job,” he said.

Dr. Manteaw added that the President appears not to care about the negative impact of the galamsey activity on the environment and the nation’s sustainability. He added that the President’s inaction may go down in history as one of the worst leadership failures in Ghana.
He also lamented the President’s response to corruption allegations.

“…when you look at the things that Frimpong Boateng said in his report, a lot of it bothers on time and national security, it bothers on the sustainability on the national environment, the environment in which our lives is sustained, my brother just look at our water bodies, and you claim that someone has brought a report and alleging some of your appointees are involved in galamsey, then you will ignore in the name of the person not passing through the due process, then you the president I believe you don’t know your work,” he added.

  • Africa needs road networks that would connect all major cities across the continent – Akufo-Addo

Africa needs road networks that would connect all major cities across the continent – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has charged African regional leaders to continue pursuing the dream of building high-speed road networks that would connect all major cities across the continent.

They should also push towards the construction of highways with piping infrastructure for energy, gas, oil, and water, as well as Information Communication Technology (ICT) fibre optic cables,

as those were crucial catalysts for the development of the manufacturing sector, uptake in Technological Skills Development and Research and Innovation on the African continent.

President Akufo-Addo made the call at the opening of the 3rd International Road Federation (IRF) Africa Regional Congress and Exhibition, in Accra, on Wednesday.

The conference is on the theme: “Delivering Tools for Mobility and Regional Connectivity.”

The objective of the three-day event is to, among other things, adopt a long-term transport infrastructure funding and procurement framework for the continent, deliver “Vision Zero” for safer road mobility, and introduce world-class Traffic Engineering and Management Solutions in the region.

It is also to enhance the quality of the transportation network through durable pavement design, climate-resilient infrastructure, and preventive asset management strategies.

President Akufo-Addo noted that despite Africa’s many challenges, the continent continued to take bold steps to boost trade among countries, specifically, the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

He also indicated that major road projects were currently being pursued by African leaders to enhance inter-mobility and promote trade on the continent.

For instance, the African Union in conjunction with regional bodies such as the African Development Bank, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, are pursuing the development of the trans-Africa highway.

Within the West Africa region of ECOWAS, detailed engineering studies were far advanced on the 1,028-kilometer six-lane expressway corridor from Abidjan to Lagos, of which 576 kilometres representing 56 per cent of the road is situated within Ghana.

When completed, the highway would augment existing transportation infrastructure and boost trade in one of Africa’s most vibrant economies.

“The Africa we all want should be an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful continent, driven by our own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena.

“Vision is very achievable. It requires visionary leaders who will…. contemporary challenge and will be able to provide the necessary, diverse climate-resilient and robust transport sector, accelerate growth, technological transformation, trade, and development,” President Akufo-Addo said.

The President told the gathering that his government had undertaken several road projects to improve inter-mobility, emphasising that since his assumption of the office six years ago, Ghana’s transport sector had witnessed considerable growth, with roads across all 16 regions receiving major improvement.

He stated that his administration had also revamped the railway, aviation and inland water transport systems and the ports, saying, “it would continue.”

President Akufo-Addo urged African leaders to pursue safety in every aspect of the policies they implemented to reduce the rate of fatalities on roads.

Dr Wm. H. (Bill) Sowell, IRF Chairman, said the Federation recognized the crucial role that roads play in promoting economic development, improving access to essential services, and enhancing the quality of life for citizens.

He said rapid urbanisation and population growth required urgent investment in sustainable transportation infrastructure that was resilient, safe, and efficient.

Through the congress, Dr Sowell said the IRF hoped to foster greater collaboration and knowledge sharing among delegates, as well as highlight the latest technological advancements and best practices in roads and mobility.

“We are confident that this congress will provide a valuable platform for delegates to learn, explore and share insights and experiences, and ultimately contribute to the development of sustainable and resilient road infrastructure across the African continent.

Mr Kwasi Amoako-Attah, Minister for Roads and Highways said Ghana had achieved significant strides in the provision and improvement of its road systems despite international global challenges.

With hard choices ahead, he said Ghana was at a crossroads as it sought to select appropriate technical choices and innovative funding models to achieve its socio-economic objectives.

“This 3rd IRF Africa Regional Congress has therefore come at a most opportune time where International Road professionals will share their experiences and forge lasting bonds with our planners and engineers,” he said.

Mr Pierre Frank Laporte, the World Bank Country Director, gave the assurance that the Bank would continue to support African governments to improve the roads infrastructure on the continent.

  • A man assaulted a 6-year-old girl 2 years after police let him free for attacking a 12-year-old

A man assaulted a 6-year-old girl 2 years after police let him free for attacking a 12-year-old

After authorities declined to press charges against him for molesting a 12-year-old just two years prior, a paedophile kidnapped and sexually molested a six-year-old girl.

In August of last year, the toddler was kidnapped by Lewis Jones, 24, when she was playing with pals in Tameside, Greater Manchester.

The victim was left bloodied and traumatised following the horrifying sexual attack she endured in broad daylight.

But a court heard Jones may not have been free to carry out the assault had police intervened sooner following his initial attack.

Jones, from Liverpool, was interviewed twice by officers, in June 2020 and April 2021, where he lied saying he ‘didn’t know it was wrong to have sex with a 15-year-old’.

He also had 102 indecent images of children stored on his mobile phone.

Despite this Jones was released under investigation, with ‘no fetters’ on his freedom.

He was only charged after he was found to have assaulted the six-year-old girl.

A man has appeared in court charged with the abduction and sexual assault of a six-year-old girl. Lewis Charles Jones, 23, of no fixed address but from Liverpool, appeared at Manchester Magistrates' Court this morning [Aug 20]. The court heard Jones approached the young child, offering to help her ‘make a den’, before grabbing her and taking her into a wooded area.

For nearly 30 minutes, Jones subjected her to a horrific, violent sexual attack while she was alone.

Jones only let her go after he heard her family screaming her name in a desperate bid to find her.

Her mother said: ‘When I first heard about what happened I couldn’t stop screaming. I couldn’t believe that someone had taken my little girl and assaulted her in such a horrific way.

‘I feel helpless because I wasn’t there to protect her. I feel lucky that she is still with us, we could easily have lost her that day. I feel very angry that he (Jones) has done this to us.’

Criticising the police, Judge Hilary Manley called the case an ‘egregious example’ of delays, saying their response made ‘very unhappy reading’.

She said: ‘If he had been charged when he should have been, he would not have been at liberty to abduct this six-year-old girl.

‘That’s the cold fact of the case.’

The court heard it took Merseyside Police ‘two years to build a file’, and it then ‘failed the internal police triage anyway’.

Prosecutor Vanessa Thomson told Jones’ sentencing hearing: ‘There seems to have been issues with personnel, retirement, third party records and examination of a mobile phone.’

Meanwhile, the impact of the assault on the 12-year-old girl has been ‘catastrophic’, and she is now living in care.

He convinced the young girl he was a 14-year-old boy, and tricked her into a sexual relationship.

She became distressed after finding out he was really 21-years-old at the time, and the police were alerted.

Judge Manley said it was ‘by no means the first’ case where an offender had been released under investigation and went on to commit further offences, but said it was ‘one of the most egregious examples’.

Jones admitted to kidnap and two counts of assault by penetration in relation to the attack last year, and four counts of sexual activity with a child, assault by penetration and having indecent images of children in relation to the 2020 attack.

He was handed a life sentence yesterday and ordered to serve a minimum of 12 years in prison.

The judge also demanded an explanation of the situation from Merseyside Police.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Kameen said: ‘We acknowledge the comments made by Judge Manley in the sentencing of Lewis Jones with regards to the time it took Merseyside Police to bring charges against Jones for the offence he committed in Merseyside.

‘We absolutely owe it to the victims of sexual offences to ensure that we fundamentally develop and improve the way we work.

‘It’s only right and proper that we establish what happened in this case and therefore we will undertake a formal review of the circumstances which led to the delay in bringing charges.

‘We are committed to delivering an effective and timely justice for all victims, particularly the most vulnerable, which includes children.

‘Our thoughts at this time are with the victims and their families, who will never get over the impact of the heinous offences committed by Jones, and I would like to reassure them that I will personally oversee the review.’

Extortion, blackmail; tactics of the 3 coffee shop mafia in Galamsey – Baba Sidiq bares it all

A member of NDC’s communications team Baba Sadiq Abdula has named some known individuals who allegedly influenced Ghana’s fight against illegal mining activities that have since wreak havoc to Ghana’s natural water bodies.

According Baba Sidiq, the group of three he described as a ‘cartel’ used blackmail, and extortion to coerce Prof Frimpong-Boateng into yielding to their requests.

The 3, named by Baba Sidiq as Gabby Otchere-Darko, Kwaku Baako and Egbert Faibille were out to protect just one individual in the person of Emmanuel Donald Entsuah, owner of Imperial Mining and A&C Alaska.

Read Baba Sidiq full comment made on Accra-based TV station Onua.

“You remember Erastus Asare Donkor did an investigative documentary where one of the companies he focused on was the same Imperial Mining which Gabby is today claiming that they were doing prospecting. If you see all the videos that came out at the time, nobody will tell you it was pure mining and not prospecting as claimed. Rather interestingly, you will see the linkage. The person involved, Donald Entsuah, the A&C Alaska guy was my colleague at Viasat 1. He was a sales manager working in the media. But his friends are the likes of Gabby, Kwaku Baako and Egbert Faibille…

“So it is a whole cartel that is involved in this thing. The Coffee Shop Mafia is a den of blackmail and extortion,” he stated on Onua TV’s morning show, Onua Maakye.

  • Here is the reason Xandy Kamel declines free liposuction offers from sponsors

Here is the reason Xandy Kamel declines free liposuction offers from sponsors

Xandy Kamel, a socialite from Ghana, has asked haters who persistently “nag” or spread rumors about her “big tummy” to be lenient.

Xandy made these statements while expressing that she doesn’t intend to bow to the societal pressure of undergoing liposuction to please anyone.

In a lengthy discussion with Zionfelix about her tummy and how a majority of individuals have expressed concerns about fixing it, Xandy said she gets tons of offers to fly outside the country for surgery.

“I have people telling me they will help me if I want to go under the knife. People have offered to sponsor me. They have tried everything possible from offering to fund the procedure to booking my tickets but I have chosen not to pay heed to that. I tell them point-blank that I don’t want to do it. I believe in ‘love me love my dogs’.

“I won’t bow to pressure and go under the knife. It’s not everyone that goes under the knife survives it. I won’t use my entire life savings to fix my stomach just to impress a man. most people who go under the knife are driven by the physical attraction they will get from men. If a man will love me, he will love me just as I am,” she expressed.

The popular actress claimed that the ‘big tummy’ stature runs through her genes, and that she discovered it after several failed attempts at losing weight.

“This is me, this is how God created me. I can work out from today to tomorrow and nothing will happen. When I was in the immigration, we were doing exercises that people started losing weight and I was rather gaining weight. We all have different genes. Exercise does not make people slim, it keeps you fit. If you know my whole family, you will know we don’t have a flat tummy.

“I have consulted a lot of doctors and done a lot of research to know if I am doing something wrong or not. People bring me slimming products, put me on a diet, and so on but all those things don’t work,” she stated.

  • Happy pregnant teacher found dead after a happy hour with pals

A primary school teacher who was eight months pregnant was seen grinning with friends only hours before she was discovered dead at home.

After 8.30am on Tuesday, Marelle Sturrock, 35, was found in her Glasgow apartment.

Her death is being investigated as suspicious, according to Police in Scotland, who are looking for a man nine miles away in the Mugdock Country Park, which is located in East Dunbartonshire.

Colleagues are believed to have raised the alarm after she failed to turn up for work or answer the door.

Marelle, an aspiring actress and singer who became a teacher after completing her postgraduate diploma in education, posted the photo on Sunday.

It shows her enjoying a meal out with pals and was shared the night before she mysteriously died.

In a letter to parents at Sandwood Primary School where she worked, headteacher Fiona Donnelly said: ‘It is with deep sorrow that I must inform you about the sudden death of Ms Sturrock who is a beloved member of our teaching staff.

‘I know that this will come as a shock to our school community, and we will do all that we can to support children, staff and families through what will be a difficult and challenging time.

‘We have had support in school today from our educational psychologists who will be here over the next few days to offer help and advice.

‘I hope that you will understand that there are no other details that I can share at this time but wanted to let our families know the tragic news from the school.’

Friend Alec Nicholson remembered Marelle as a ‘kind’ and ‘talented’ person.

Speaking to the Mirror, he paid touching tribute to ‘an exceptionally beautiful human’.

‘I mean, of course anyone would say that about someone whose loss they’re mourning, but she really was incredibly special. So beautiful, so talented, but so kind,’ he said.

‘She really was the very last person anyone could ever want to come to harm. Just a lovely, lovely girl.’

Detective Chief Inspector Cheryl Kelly said: ‘Our thoughts are with Marelle’s family and friends, as well as everyone affected by this tragic incident.

‘We are providing her family with support at this incredibly difficult time as our investigation to establish the full circumstances continues.’

She added there was ‘not believed to be any risk to the wider public’ but anyone with information or concerns should contact police on 101.

The English student of Akenten Appiah Menka University of Skills Training And Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) met his untimely death after being attacked by the armed robbers on Tuesday, April 25 around 3am.

According to reports, the deceased was returning back to his hostel after hours of studying on campus where he met these armed men. They attacked the student, robbed him and used a sharp weapon which is believed to be a cutlass to cause a huge injury on the deceased head.

The student was later sent to Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for treatment. Reports coming in indicate that the student couldn’t make it. The Tanoso Police is currently working on the case to immediately arrest these criminals.

Students of AAMUSTED are currently writing their end-of-semester examinations. During this period, security is heavy on campus since students study throughout the night.

This is a sad and unfortunate incident. Students have been advised not to walk alone in quiet places.

  • 536 British nationals are evacuated from Sudan by the UK

536 British nationals are evacuated from Sudan by the UK

After the ceasefire expires, thousands of British citizens face the dreadful possibility of being stranded in Sudan.

A tenuous cease-fire was imposed on Tuesday to permit residents of the war-torn capital of Khartoum to leave, and 536 Britons have been transported to safety on six flights.

The government has cautioned that there is no certainty as to how many more evacuation flights will leave when the deadline passes at midnight local time (10pm GMT) tonight because the ceasefire expires.

More than 2,000 British nationals in Sudan have registered with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) under evacuation plans, but thousands more could be in the country.

The military is racing against time to rescue Brits who will be stranded if they can’t make it to the Wadi Saeedna airstrip in time.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly this morning urged UK nationals still in the Northeast African country: ‘If you are planning to move, move now.’

He told Sky News: ‘We cannot predict exactly what will happen when that ceasefire ends, but what we do know is it will be much, much harder, potentially impossible.

‘So what we’re saying to British nationals is if you’re hesitant, if you’re weighing up your options, our strong, strong, strong advice is to go to Wadi Saeedna while the ceasefire is up and running.

‘There are planes, there is capacity, we will lift you out. I’m not able to make those same assurances once the ceasefire has ended.’

The biggest problem facing UK nationals is getting to the airstrip north of the capital safely with fighting still being heard in Khartoum and nearby Omdurman despite the ceasefire.

Armed gangs and criminals are reportedly also in the area meaning any route to safety requires a perilous journey that comes with the very real risk of being shot, injured or robbed.

One British writer managed to get out of Sudan by taking a 600-mile exit route in what she called a ‘miracle escape’.

However, other Brits aren’t so fortunate with a student describing how she’s stuck in Khartoum amid scenes reminiscent of the horror movie The Purge, while another man from the UK is trying to make the dangerous journey on foot.

Further evacuation flights were expected to leave Sudan last night after the first plane carrying British nationals landed safely yesterday afternoon.

Africa minister Andrew Mitchell said the evacuation mission was ‘going very smoothly’ with ‘no great backlog, no great congestion’ at the airstrip.

But he warned ‘we are absolutely in the hands of the ceasefire’ and the government has told Brits that ‘travel within Sudan is conducted at your own risk’.

Mr Mitchell told Sky News: ‘We are doing everything we can to make sure it’s prolonged and on the wider stage, too, trying to negotiate for a longer ceasefire, because if the combatants don’t lay down their arms and return to barracks, there’s going to be a humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan.’

He also said that ‘at the moment those safe and legal routes don’t exist’ for refugees from Sudan to claim asylum in the UK.

Military chiefs have told Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at least 500 people a day can be airlifted and flights can continue ‘for as long as we need to’ even if the 72-hour pause in fighting agreed between rival generals breaks.

It means UK citizens may still have a potential route out of Sudan but will come with the choice of either remaining in the country seeking safety and shelter or risk travelling through a warzone to make it to the airstrip.

Tarig Babikir, a British national who is trying to flee, said: ‘It’s complete anarchy right now, complete chaos.

‘Anyone can rob you, anyone can shoot you.’

One man from Sudan, who did not give his name, described his experience as a ‘nightmare’ when speaking outside Stansted Airport after returning safely.

He said: ‘It’s absolutely fantastic to be back. It’s been a nightmare. We’ve never seen anything like it before.

‘We saw it on the television before but we never thought it was going to happen to a peaceful country like Sudan.

‘Khartoum is like a ghost city, everyone is leaving Khartoum now.

‘We are very grateful to the British servicemen and women who risked their lives to come to Sudan and help us out.’

  • The High Court has ruled that the next nurses’ strike is unconstitutional

The High Court has ruled that the next nurses’ strike is unconstitutional

A High Court judge has ruled that the Royal College of Nursing‘s proposed strike action for next month would be illegal.

Health Secretary Steve Barclay announced last week that he will file a lawsuit against the suggested strikes.

Over the May bank holiday, RCN members who work in the NHS in England are getting ready to go on a 48-hour strike.

They plan to leave starting at 8 p.m. on April 30 (the start of the night shift) and remaining until 8 p.m. on May 3 (the start of the night shift).

LONDON, ENGLAND - APRIL 27: RCN members protest at government attempts to make their strike illegal at the High Court on April 27, 2023 in London, England. However action on May 2 will now no longer go ahead.

The action will see nurses in emergency departments, intensive care and cancer wards down tools for the first time.

But the Government said the action on May 2 would be outside of the union’s mandate as its ballot closed at midday on November 2.

A High Court judge has now ruled the planned strike action on May 2 as ‘unlawful’ as it falls beyond its legal mandate.

Appearing before the High Court on Thursday lawyers acting for the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) argued the upcoming strike by the RCN had no ‘democratic legitimacy’ and risked harming patients, carers and the public.

Andrew Burns KC, acting on behalf of the DHSC, said that Pat Cullen had not been honest with its members over the legitimacy of the nurse’s strike.

Nurses hold up placards expressing their opinion during the demonstration outside St Thomas' Hospital. The Royal College of Nursing has organized two days of strike action over pay and working conditions, though have signaled that a willingness to negotiate their original demand of a 19% pay rise. Mr Burns told the court: ‘The Secretary of State is very concerned that the RCN has not come clean with its members.

‘The Secretary of State is very worried that this position puts nurses in an invidious position.

‘The RCN has been incompetent in looking at its calendar’.

Steve Barclay wrote to Ms Cullen on Wednesday questioning why the union had decided not to send lawyers to the hearing.

Mr Burns said that the RCN’s decision not to appear came after several hours of silence yesterday and that it appeared they were in a state of ‘some internal paralysis.’

He said the group was trying to ‘work out how to get themselves out of the hole they had got themselves in’.

He continued: ‘Industrial action must have the support of a democratic mandate.

‘As far as the Secretary of State is concerned this is an open and shut case.’

Addressing Ms Cullen’s witness statement provided to the court, Mr Burns said: ‘The strike is outside the democratic mandate by one day and Pat Cullen should accept that’.

In a letter sent to the court the union said its decision not to send representatives was ‘in no sense … intended to demonstrate any disrespect’ to the judge or the court.

The letter read: ‘The RCN has been a staunch critic of the ideologically driven changes introduced by the Trade Union Act 2016.

‘Given the existence of an overwhelming mandate from its members in support of the action, the fact that not a single employer has intimated a challenge to the planned action on 2 May 2023 and the steadfast public support for nurses taking action, the RCN does not wish to give credence to what it fervently believes to be an unnecessary and misguided application brought by the Secretary of State, and one which is exclusively based upon one of the very many amendments introduced by the Trade Union Act 2016.’

NHS bosses wrote to Health Secretary Steve Barclay asking him to check the legality of the strike action, before the mandate expires in May.

In a statement released on Twitter, Mr Barclay said he had ‘no choice but to proceed with legal action’ against the Royal College of Nursing.

He said: ‘Following a request from NHS Employers I am regretfully applying to the High Court to declare the Royal College of Nursing’s planned strike action on May 2 unlawful.

‘Despite attempts by my officials to resolve the situation with the RCN over the weekend, I have been left with no choice but to proceed with legal action.

‘I firmly support the right to take industrial action within the law – but the government cannot stand by and let unlawful strike action go ahead nor ignore the request of NHS Employers.

‘We must also protect nurses by ensuring they are not asked to take part in an unlawful strike.’

Kejetia market fire victims demand GHS100,000 pledge from NPP

The Combined Trader Unions in Kumasi Kejetia market is demanding the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to fulfill the pledge of GH¢100,000 made to the direct victims of the market fire.

The extension portion of the new Kejetia market was on March 15, 2023 caught by fire through alleged human error while using a gas cylinder for cooking.

The fire completely burnt about 35 shops bringing to a halt all trading activities in the affected area for more than a month now.

A delegation from the New Patriotic Party led by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, Henry Nana Boakye National Organizer, Kate Gyemfua National organizer among other highly recognized party members visited the market to console the victims.

Speaking to GHOne News Ashanti regional Correspondent, Isaac Justice Bediako, General Secretary of the Party, Justin Kodua announced a GHC100,000 financial support package to the victims whom he described as active respected members of the party.

Adding the money donated will help them recover some of the losses they have incurred from the fire disaster.

“Knowing the situation that they find themselves in, the party has made a pledge of GHC100,000 to support the market women and men whose shops got burnt, at least to support them in the interim, while we know that the government will also have a package for them,” he added.

However, speaking to GHOne News on Thursday, April 27, 2023 Nana Kwasi Prempeh said, the New Patriotic Party is yet to honour the pledge they made to them as leaders to share with the fire victims.

“As we speak now we are yet to receive the GHc.100,000 monitory pledge the party made to the fire victims. Our members are always chasing us for the money thinking that the money has already been given to us,” he said.

He, however, explained that the NPP’s flagbearer hopeful Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng has already honoured the GHc.100,000 he made to the victims the very day he made the pledge with what he described as ‘physical cash’.

He pleaded with the party leadership to fulfill the promise they made to the victims for it to serve the intended purpose.

Lt Col Kindratenko, who acts as a spokesperson for Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces (SOF), told Metro.co.uk: ‘Ukrainian SOF are one of the most elite units within the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

‘From the very beginning of the full-scale invasion and earlier they took a prominent role in the defence of the country against the Russians.

‘We destroy the enemy both on the frontline as well as deep behind the enemy lines using up to date weapons, technologies and techniques.

‘Much of what Ukrainian SOF are doing is unknown to the general public and will be so for some time but believe me that missions are unique and will be studied by the SOF community all around the world.

‘I am talking about all three components within Ukrainian Special Operations Forces, namely the Special Forces, Psychological Operations and the Resistance Movement.’

Footage released by Ukraine’s special forces this month shows Russian targets being destroyed in Bakhmut, where the shadowy units have been in the forefont of the defence, and the wider Donetsk region.

Snipers are shown picking off targets from ruined buildings and on night missions, while aerial footage shows a US-supplied HIMARS missile destroying a Russian electronic warfare post.

Another clip shows a Russian tank and an infantry fighting vehicle being destroyed in the dark by operators said to have navigated a landmine-strewn area easily visible to Russian forces.

By contrast, the performance of Moscow’s own ‘spetsnaz’ special forces, including in the failed attempt to capture Antonov Airport on the road to Kyiv in the first weeks of the war, is widely considered to have been shambolic by Western military experts.

Deep inside Russia, a series of unclaimed explosions have taken place at military installations, including one last December which damaged two Tu-95 Bear heavy bombers. The long-range jets were at an airbase in Saratov Oblast when the damage was inflicted, with the UK Ministry of Defence describing the incident as one of the ‘most strategically significant’ failures of the Kremlin’s force protection since the full-scale invasion began.

In October last year, a spectacular explosion degraded the Crimea Bridge linking the peninsular to Russia. The blast has also gone unexplained.

Some of the damage behind enemy lines may be linked to the unique ‘Black Box Project’ — a secretive initiative funded through public donations raised by the civilian Come Back Alive foundation.

In the backdrop is the provision of military technology and training worth billions of dollars from Western nations including the UK, readily utilised through a continued training programme by Ukraine’s SOF.

Lt Col Kindratenko told Metro.co.uk that the elite military wing also comprises Seal teams able to operate underwater.

In the celebrated mission to liberate Snake Island last July, combat divers were said to have approached in underwater vehicles to check for mines before a main battle group approached.

‘Ukrainian SOF is constantly increasing their skills, especially from the beginning of the full-scale invasion,’ Lt Col Kindratenko said.

‘We have an active training centre and instantly integrate lessons learned into training and to enhance the knowledge of our warriors.

‘Moreover, we have already launched a second qualification course during the full-scale invasion. We learn all the time and try to do our training in accordance with current operational needs, because war is a dimension that changes all the time. And we learn from our enemy as well.’

Fragmented details of SOF missions, the vast majority of which are classified, have been released by the Ukrainian military.

The units played a critical role in the rapid counter-offensive that drove the Russians back from the northern approaches to Kyiv in the early phase of the war and the subsequent liberation of the Sumy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Kherson regions.

Special forces troops were among the first to enter the reclaimed south-eastern city of Kherson itself, the commander said.

The presence of adaptable, highly mobile units has been a marked feature of Ukraine’s ability to inflict crushing losses on an invasion force possessing superior numbers and firepower in the 14 months since the full-scale invasion began.

‘What is more, these are reconnaissance missions which are conducted in concert with our brothers in arms from the Defence Forces mostly from artillery units,’ Lt Col Kindratenko said.

‘We destroy the enemy’s rear positions, heavy armament, electronic warfare and air defence systems, as well as the enemy’s logistics.

‘We are taking part in the hottest spots on the frontline including Bakhmut, Mariinka, Avdiivka and Vuhledar.

‘Our Seals conduct operations over and beneath the water. Also, I would like to highlight the incredible role of Ukrainian SOF snipers.

‘Our Resistance Movement is heavily present in the occupied territories, providing vital information and conducting special tasks.’

Russian forces to the east are said to be well dug in to defensive positions, which, coupled with the Pentagon intelligence leaks, may mean why speculation about a Ukrainian counter-offensive now suggests it will come in the summer, weeks later than first thought.

The UK Ministry of Defence yesterday reported ‘heavy, short-range’ combat in the western districts of Bakhmut, which the defenders were said to have ‘integrated as one element of a much deeper defensive zone’.

On the ground, Ukrainian SOF commander Viktor Horenko visited his troops in the city, where he acknowledged that conditions were ‘difficult’.

But he told the elite units that they had again proved ‘the advantage of quality over quantity’ in destroying Russian targets and hindering its troops from seizing the city.

British assistance, including Challenger 2 tanks, and a long-term training programme, is helping to fulfil a ‘critical’ ability to innovate, Lt Col Kindratenko said.

The US is also providing materiel as Ukraine’s biggest military backer, including through the supply of HIMARS rocket systems and Abrams tanks.

Elite British soldiers, either active or veterans, have long been said to have been supporting Ukrainian forces on the ground.

In the latest apparent disclosure, the leaked US military documents suggested that there might have been as many as 50 UK operators in the country between February and March this year.

Lt Col Kindratenko referred to his own troops’ ability to rapidly innovate with the backing of Western military support as key to inflicting a decisive blow on Moscow’s military machine.

‘Support from our partners is of vital importance for us and we are grateful to the UK and all the people in the UK for the comprehensive support we have received before and during the Russian invasion,’ he said.

‘But still, to win the war we have to receive more weapons and support because Russian capabilities are enormous and in no way should we underestimate the enemy.

‘With the support of our external partners, our forces are able to uniquely employ more innovative solutions and procedures in this war.

‘Innovation in the current war is critical, and we proved many times that we use these innovations effectively.’
