We know the way forward; NPP will definitely break the 8 – Bawumia

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has assured members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the party will retain power beyond the two terms of president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo which ends in 2024.

Bawumia, widely rumoured to be interested in succeeding Akufo-Addo as party flagbearer and president in January 2025 told supporters in the Ayawaso Central Constituency weeks back that the NPP as a party of ideas will win the 2024 polls and by that ‘break the eight.’

‘Break the Eight’ is a terminology that the NPP has adopted for its 2024 election, referring to retaining political power beyond the eight years that each party has spent before being voted out under the 1992 Constitution.

Bawumia took potshots at the former president John Dramani Mahama, who is expected to lead the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2024 labeling Mahama a policy-less politician despite being in politics for the past three decades.

“So, don’t worry, by the grace of God, we are going to break the eight. We know who the opposition is, we know the way forward, we will fight with our record and our vision, and that is a vision I know the people of Ghana are going to buy into. The NPP is a party of ideas,” Bawumia stressed.

Bawumia is seen as a frontrunner in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership race slated for later this year, even though he has yet to openly declare his candidature, senior aides have assured that he will run to lead the NPP into election 2024.

John Mahama is currently touring the country seeking the National Democratic Congress (NDC_ flagbearership nod to lead the party into the 2024 polls. He will come up against Kwabena Duffuor and Kojo Bonsu in a primary slated for May 13.

Bullgod urges govt to pump monies into the creative sector

Artiste manager Bullgod has urged the government to invest in the creative industry. According to him, countries that have pumped monies into their creative sector are reaping the benefits. Tourists have made such states their preferred destination but when it comes to Ghana, leaders are failing to see the immense contribution of creatives, Bullgod has observed.

According to the talent manager, the creative arts sector which provides jobs to many has been neglected.

He said it breaks his heart when leaders in position term Ghanaian creatives as unserious despite their hard work.

“I don’t know if they don’t think or care and they say we are not serious. They keep saying we are not serious because they are jokers. The ones calling us (creatives) unserious are jokers,” he told Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz.

The man who has been championing the course for the government to invest and pump money into the Creative Arts sector lamented how investments are being directed to less profitable sectors.

“The support to push creatives to the next level isn’t there and you compare us to other sectors, they are not even creating…they are not even creating as much…history will tell you that government has made money off this space for a very long time…yet we don’t see their support…they said they were going to build amphitheatres.

“If all the events stop today, we are in big trouble. If musicians stop recording, theatres, and movies, it will be chaos…look at how critical our space is. We employ a lot. I think it is about time, sometimes I sit back and am like, when they say Creative Arts, what is their understanding?” Bullgod quizzed during his submission on Hitz FM, on April 25, 2023.

  • Fulani herdsmen ‘cry’ for security following deadly attacks

Fulani herdsmen ‘cry’ for security following deadly attacks

The Fulani herdsmen group in Ghana have called on security agencies to come to their aid citing rising spate of attacks on their members in the Pru West District of the Bono East region.

The call was made by Alhaji Sane, the Public Relations Officer of the Fulani herdsmen in Ghana. He expressed concern that their lives are in danger because they are constantly attacked as they go about their normal duties in the area.

According to him, three of his compatriots were shot to death by suspected farmers in the area, while others have been hospitalized due to gunshot wounds. He revealed that the suspects have been arrested and are currently facing trial, but they are calling for measures to be put in place to avoid future occurrences.

Speaking in an interview with Kwabena Mensah Abrompah on Radio Univers on April 26, 2023, he alleged that some government officials are trying to sweep the issues under the carpet, which is very worrying. He urged the authorities to take the matter seriously and ensure that justice is served.

“We beg the leaders of the country; they should come to our aid because the laws are not meant for only one person but all of us.

“The kind of things that are going on in Bono East is not good, recently they killed two Fulani herdsmen by shooting them, and we had discussions about it… 23rd of this month, other members were also killed. And as I speak the case is in court. We have receipts that we pay both direct and indirect taxes but the farmers are not treating us well.

“So, we need the government to come and support us. Government should come and support us because we are suffering…we are also human beings, even if we are foreigners, the law protects us also, so we need the government to support us to end such killings,” he said.

  • UK calls Putin’s modern T-14 tanks “untrustworthy”

UK calls Putin’s modern T-14 tanks “untrustworthy”

The newest Russian tanks have been introduced to the Ukrainian battlefield by Vladimir Putin.

According to the state news agency RIA, Russian forces have begun firing on Ukrainian positions with the T-14 Armata but have not yet “participated in direct assault operations.”

The ‘invisible tank’ moniker comes from the developers who boasted about the armored vehicle’s high speed of 50 mph and claimed it could avoid hostile radar detection.

It is claimed to be outfitted with cutting-edge technology, as well as an autonomous turret and additional protection on its flanks. It is regarded as Russia’s most dreaded tank.

Crews control its weapons remotely from ‘an isolated armoured capsule located in the front of the hull’ and RIA said the tanks underwent ‘combat coordination’ at training grounds in Ukraine before they were deployed.

But it’s taken some time for the war machine to be called into action since they were first unveiled by Putin at Russia’s Victory Day parade in Moscow in 2015, and they’ve been highly criticised by the British military as ‘untrustworthy’.

The T-14 was among the new vehicles on show for the first time that day – but it broke down on its debut outing in the rehearsal, leading to an awkward recovery effort.

British military intelligence reported in January that Russian forces in Ukraine were reluctant to accept the first batch of the tanks because of their ‘poor condition’.

It also said any deployment of the T-14 would likely be ‘a high-risk decision’ for Russia and one taken mainly to serve propaganda purposes.

The British military said: ‘Production is probably only in the low tens while commanders are unlikely to trust the vehicle in combat.

‘11 years in development, the programme has been dogged with delays, reduction in planned fleet size, and reports of manufacturing problems.’

    Russia’s T-14 Armata tank

    • Cost: £5.6 million
    • Main weapon: 125mm smoothbore cannon
    • Secondary weapons: 12.7mm Kord machine gun, 7.62 mm PKTM machine gun
    • Armour: 44S-sv-Sh steel
    • Engine: 12Н360 diesel double turbocharger
    • Top speed: 50mph
    • Weight: 55 tonnes
    • Length: 35ft
    • Width: 11ft
    • Height: 11ft
    • Crew: 3

According to Russian media reports, the Kremlin ordered 2,300 of the tanks to be manufactured by 2020, but the date was later pushed back to 2025.

In December 2021, the Interfax news agency reported state conglomerate Rostec had started production of 40 tanks and anticipated they’d be ready by this year.

Nato has already been equipping the Ukrainian army with dozens of state-of-the-art battle tanks, which could soon come face-to-face with the T-14.

Among its many new systems, T-14 developers UralVagonZavod claimed one of its most advanced capabilities was being able to screen itself from enemy radar and infrared heat-seeking target finders.

A cloaking device is reportedly buried deep behind a shield inside the heavily armoured body, which disrupts the infrared signature that would pinpoint its location for enemy forces.

The manufacturer’s head of special equipment Vyacheslav Khalitov said: ‘We essentially made the invisible tank.’

This week, Ukrainian forces crossed the Dnipro River for the first time since the invasion last year in preparation for a counter attack.

Speculation has been growing over when the Ukrainian army would launch its counter offensive to try and push back Russian troops.

Clement Apaak queries govt over prioritizing tree planting over school feeding

Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr Clement Apaak has questioned why the government could approve 2.5 million Ghana cedis for tree planting while school feeding caterers are on strike.

This comes on the back of the government approving a whopping amount of Gh₵2.5 million for the 2023 Green Ghana tree planting project.

This was disclosed by the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Benito Owusu-Bio at a press conference in preparation towards the 2023 Green Ghana Day celebration.

Commenting on the development, the Builsa South lawmaker stated that despite tree planting is good the Ghanaian children are equally important.

“Government owes school feeding caterers, as a result they are on strike.”

“The current rate per child per day is 97p, this can’t even feed a pet cat. Yet government can find 2.5M to plant trees in times like this? Trees are important, yes, but our children are more important Mr. President,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the deputy minister indicated that the Forestry Commission through its district offices and internal nursery will provide three million seedlings.

“It is also going to assist with 500,000 seedlings, and some committed donors providing us 1 million seedlings. All of these will be up to 7.5 million out of the 10 million,” he said.

“As we speak now, our approved budget for the Green Ghana this year is GH₵2.5 million. This is not enough, but we cannot say that we are not going to celebrate the day this year. So, there’s the need to start appealing for funds, which we have started since last year and we are hopeful that we will get some support from our partners to make this possible.”

It is ‘hide and seek’ in Sudan – father tells children

As their home in Sudan got caught up in a gunfire, a father pretended to his kids that they were playing “hide and seek” as they dove for shelter.

In the capital of Sudan, Khartoum, Munzir Salman’s family was at home when two military factions who are currently engaged in combat began firing at each other from opposite sides of their home.

I was in the center, the 37-year-old claimed. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the first time I’ve heard gunfire around me, and it was horrifying.

I had to maintain my composure for my three children because I am a single parent. I had to explain to them that it was a game, so I described it as a game of hide-and-seek.

‘It was an experience they had never been through before, it was very scary but I tried to make it a game for them.

‘I explained the danger before trying to make it like Tom and Jerry where the people outside were Tom and we were Jerry.’

Munzir, a British-Sudanese builder with dual citizenship, told his story while waiting to fly to the UK via Cyprus.

British nationals have faced dangerous journeys to the Wadi Saeedna airstrip in the hopes of being able to board an evacuation flight out of the country.

Eight flights were expected to have left by the end of Wednesday to lift people to safety as the military races against time to rescue citizens while a fragile ceasefire holds.

Foreign secretary James Cleverly told UK nationals on Tuesday that they must make their own way to the airstrip.

Munzir, whose wife died in 2020, had to take the trip with three children, 11-year-old Siddig, eight-year-old Shaden and six-year-old Yasmin.

It was only 20 miles from the family’s house to the airstrip but the violence around them meant they travelled 60 miles to get there.

The dad added: ‘It was hard to explain to the children that it’s a dangerous journey.

‘The first part was that the RSF were trying to spot us as we travelled through neighbourhoods. They spotted us four times but because they saw I had children they let us go.’

The first British evacuees from Sudan touched down on home soil at Stansted Airport at around 2.24pm this afternoon after taking off from Cyprus this morning. Around 100 people were counted off the plane.

According to the government’s own estimates, there are at least 2,000 UK nationals in Sudan, though there have been suggestions the number could be above 4,000.

What you need to know about the war in Sudan

    How did the war start?

The current fighting is the result of a power struggle between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The paramilitary group, which was originally created by dictator Omar al-Bashir to crush a rebellion in the western region of Darfur, cooperated with the army to overthrow the autocrat in 2019.

This was supposed to precede Sudan’s transition to a democratic government, a move backed by western nations.

The north African country saw more than two years of power-sharing between the military and civilian leaders but a coup brought this to an end in October 2021.

Sudan was left with the army’s general, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, as Sudan’s de facto ruler and the RSF’s general Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commonly known as Hemedti, as vice-president.

    What sparked the recent escalation?

The Sudanese people and the international community continued to push for a new transition to democracy after the coup.

The plan was to get Sudan to a point where civilian parties would have control over the military, which the RSF would be dissolved into.

But there has long been tension surrounding the details of this arrangement, namely the proposed timeline – the army wanted the integration complete in two years but the RSF insisted on waiting 10.

Nevertheless, negotiations looked hopeful with a final deal due to be signed earlier this month, before a new phase of fighting broke out on April 15.

The army pointed the finger at the RSF for mobilising troops to key strategic sites in the capital of Khartoum and the RSF claimed it was just responding to the army’s alleged plot to seize full power with Bashir loyalists.

    What now?

More than 420 people have been killed and more than 3,700 wounded since the conflict escalated, according to Sudan’s Federal Ministry of Health.

Paramedics, frontline nurses and doctors have told the Wold Health Organisation they are often unable to reach the wounded because of attacks on ambulances and health facilities.

Some 20 hospitals are no longer functional and 12 others are at risk due to lack of medical supplies and health care workers.

Multiple countries, including the UK, are working on evacuation plans for its citizens with the Government promising to prioritise the vulnerable ‘starting with family groups with children, the elderly or people with documented medical conditions’.

World leaders have urged the two warring generals to de-escalate the violence and return to negotiations.

  • Ghanaian Afua Kyei appointed as Chief Financial Officer at Bank of England

Ghanaian Afua Kyei appointed as Chief Financial Officer at Bank of England

Recently, the stories have changed as women around the world continue to break down barriers in fields of work and endeavor that have historically been dominated by men.

From top positions in banks, the military, and the apex judicial courts of the world, among others, the new trend is the emergence of many women at the helm of affairs.

Joining the pack of these formidable women is a Ghanaian named Afua Kyei, who is the current Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director at the Bank of England-UK.

The 40-year-old rose through the ranks at the UK Central Bank after joining in 2019 and currently sits on a balance sheet of about 1 trillion pounds.

Afua Kyei also oversees the Bank of England’s Asset Purchase Facility Fund and its Alternative Liquidity Facility. She also serves as a Co-Executive Sponsor, leading the Bank’s approach to climate change and is focused on Diversity and Inclusion.

Her rise to the top position began in 2019 when she joined the Bank of England from Barclays Bank, where she served as a Finance Director from 2012-2019.

During her tenure at Barclays, Afua Kyei worked across three divisions; Group Operations and Technology, the Investment Bank, and later worked in the Retail Bank as Chief Financial Officer (mortgages).

Kyei was instrumental in the Strategic Cost Transformation Programme and was an Ambassador for Diversity and Inclusion for the Bank’s Group Finance Director functions.

Prior to joining Barclays, she held a Strategic Advisory position at UBS during its mergers and acquisitions. From 2007 to 2009, Kyei served as Investment Banker for UBS at its financial institutions’ group. She also covered the UK, Benelux, Central and Eastern Europe arms of the bank from 2009-2011.

The diverse experience and roles occupied helped her to become part of the team that helped to provide advisory services to RBS during the financial crisis about its divestments mandated as part of European Union State Aid remediation, participation in HM Treasury’s £282 billion asset protection scheme and its capital issuance of £33.5 billion to HM Treasury.

Afua Kyei studied at Somerville College, Oxford University reading Chemistry and holds a Master’s degree. She was also awarded a Junior Research Fellowship honour by US-based Princeton University in Organic Chemistry.

Sharing some details of her personal journey in an article published on the BoE website, Afua noted that “Growing up, I wanted to be doctor and then decided to read Chemistry here in the UK at Oxford and specialised as an Organic Chemist. My thesis focussed on using organic synthesis to create anti-tumorous molecules that occur in nature.

I wanted to do research in the US and was awarded a Junior research fellowship in the US at Princeton. Then I decided I wanted to do something more fast-paced, so I changed paths and decided to move into the financial sector. I then went on to apply my problem-solving skills through building a career in banking and financial services in the private sector.”

She continued, “Fast forward, I joined the Bank of England as their CFO, four years ago. The reason I was attracted to the Bank, is because it was a wonderful opportunity for me to combine my innate desire to help people, whilst using my skills to do something purposeful in the public sector, helping society as a whole. My diverse set of experiences has helped me to shape my role as CFO and co-executive sponsor of DEI.”

“At the time I joined the Bank, I was the only executive of colour. I was 36, and was the youngest member of the executive team. I was the first black executive to be appointed in the 329 year history of the Bank. When I was appointed, Sir Bradley Fried was the Chairman, Mark Carney was the Governor. I was inspired by them and about what I had learned about the Bank – this drew me into the organisation. At the time, the CFO reported into the COO. Then, two years ago, Governor Andrew Bailey changed this and I now report into him directly,” Kyei recounted.

She further shared that striking a balance between her work and personal life is of grave importance to her adding that when she is not occupied with work, she enjoys spending time with her three children, family and friends.

Afua Kyei is a qualified Chartered Accountant (ICAS) with Ernst & Young.

She was recently named in the 2023 list of 100 Most Reputable Africans complied by Reputation Poll International (RPI), a leading global reputation firm.

China ‘stands on the side of peace’ – Xi tells Zelensky

President Zelensky of Ukraine has been informed by Chinese President Xi Jinping that China will send a special representative to his country.

Following Beijing’s declaration that it wished to serve as a peace mediator in Russia’s war against Ukraine, Mr. Xi spoke by phone with Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday, according to state media. This action was long overdue.

The phone call’s contents were not immediately made public.

Zelensky tweeted after the call, “I had a long and meaningful phone call with President Xi Jinping.”

‘I believe that this call, as well as the appointment of Ukraine’s ambassador to China, will give a powerful impetus to the development of our bilateral relations.’

China has tried to appear neutral in the war but refused to criticize Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Chinese government released a peace proposal in February and called for a cease-fire and peace talks.

Mr Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a joint statement before the February 2020 invasion saying their governments had a ‘no limits friendship.’

‘Negotiation is the only viable way out,’ state TV said in a report on Mr Xi’s comments to Zelenskyy.

‘There is no winner in a nuclear war,’ the report said. ‘All parties concerned should remain calm and restrained in dealing with the nuclear issue and truly look at the future and destiny of themselves and humanity as a whole and work together to manage the crisis.’

China has ‘always stood on the side of peace’, state media reported following the call.

‘On the issue of the Ukraine crisis, China has always stood on the side of peace and its core position is to promote peace talks,’ CCTV reported Xi as saying during the conversation.

Full details of Empress Gifty’s sad marriage story

In 2020, gospel musician Empress Gifty detailed how depressed she was when her husband of ten years, suddenly asked for a divorce.

What began as a happy journey ended in sorrow for her when news of their divorce spread in 2017 although there were rumours of a separation in 2014.

The divorce request was based on information someone gave the husband, as she was told.

10 years it was! The decade union between one of Ghana’s finest gospel musicians, formerly Gifty Osei and Prophet Prince Elisha Osei.

In 2017, the duo became the center of conversations on social media and major news platforms when news of the collapse of their marriage went rife.

Ghanaians were more shocked when it was reported that the two got separated in 2014 but managed to keep it solemn from the media and the general public.

Speaking passionately about her divorce journey on Restoration Show hosted by Stacy Amoateng, Empress Gifty detailed how depressed she was and the toll the ‘painful’ divorce had on her.

Just like a woman who loves her husband and children, the ‘Aseda’ hitmaker revealed she tried all possible means to save her marriage but her ex-husband was bent on exiting.

Speaking in the Twi dialect, Empress Gifty mentioned that her ex-husband made his divorce intentions known to her in 2012 when she was far away in Canada.

Reality dawned on her when she came to the realization that after all her attempts, divorce was staring glaringly at her face. The thought of what she was going to tell people, especially when she had made people believe her marriage was a perfect one, made her depressed.

“In 2012, he told me he wanted a divorce. I didn’t believe it. What will people say; I had bragged about my husband, I made people believe I have the best marriage ever, I am okay, I am the best woman ever! So who was I going to call to explain the situation to? I was depressed. I don’t take blood tonics but I was gaining weight… I could cry from morning to evening in my room,” she told Stacy in the interview.

Joe Biden cautions North Korea that a nuclear strike would be “regime end”

The end of whichever administration begins the aggressive action would be the result of a North Korean nuclear attack, according to President Joe Biden.

During a joint press appearance with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol at the White House, Biden issued a stern warning to North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.

Biden declared on Wednesday afternoon that any nuclear strike by North Korea against the United States, its friends, or partners would be unacceptable and lead to the overthrow of the relevant regime.

Biden’s notice came as he and Yoon announced the Washington Declaration, an agreement aimed at deterring nuclear aggression from North Korea.

‘What the declaration means is we’re going to make every effort to consult with our allies when it’s appropriate if any action is so called for,’ Biden said from the Rose Garden.

The alliance means the US will defend South Korea, which is what Yoon had hoped for.

‘Sustainable peace on the Korean Peninsula does not happen automatically,’ said Yoon.

‘Our two leaders have decided to significantly strengthen extended deterrence of our two countries against North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats so that we can achieve peace through the superiority of overwhelming forces and not a false peace based on the goodwill of the other side.’

Biden called the new alliance with South Korea ‘ironclad’.

‘The alliance formed in war and has flourished in peace,’ he said.

‘Our mutual defense treaty is ironclad and that includes our commitment to extend a deterrence – and that includes the nuclear threat, the nuclear deterrent.’

Biden cited North Korea’s ‘increased threats and the blatant violation of US sanctions’ in highlighting the important timing of the alliance.

The agreement comes amid heightened tensions on the peninsula, especially over the past year. North Korea has launched about 100 missiles since the beginning of 2022. Meanwhile, North Korea sees joint military drills between the US and South Korea as a threat.

    A. Bharat Bhushan Babu, a spokesman for the Indian defense ministry, told CNN on Thursday that China’s recently appointed defense minister Li Shangfu will meet his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh outside of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) military ministers’ meeting.

Along with peers from Russia and many Central Asian nations, Li, who assumed the position last month, is in New Delhi.

This is the first time a Chinese defense minister has visited India since a deadly clash along their hotly disputed border claimed the lives of at least 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers in Aksai Chin-Ladakh in 2020.

Tensions between the two countries have been simmering ever since, and escalated in December when a brawl between troops from both sides in the Tawang Sector of India’s northeastern territory of Arunachal Pradesh resulted in minor injuries.

The lengthy disputed border has long been a source of friction between New Delhi and Beijing, with the agitation spilling into war before. In 1962 a month-long conflict ended in a Chinese victory and India losing thousands of square miles of territory.

On Tuesday, China’s Ministry of Defense said Li will “communicate and exchange views on issues of the international and regional situations as well as defense and security cooperation,” at the SCO gathering.

Earlier this month, he met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow in his first overseas trip since assuming the role, as China and Russia continue to bolster ties while Western countries ramp up pressure on Beijing to push Putin to end his war against Ukraine.

Li, a general and veteran of China’s military modernization drive, was sanctioned by the United States in 2018 over transactions with Russia’s state-controlled arms exporter Rosoboronexport, when he led the Chinese military’s Equipment Development Department.

India, which is moving closer to the US as it tries to counter the rise of an increasingly assertive China, also relies heavily on Russian arms to equip its military.

Li’s visit comes four days after India and China concluded the 18th round of talks to attempt to resolve the border issue.

India assumed the chair of the SCO summit in 2023. The grouping’s foreign ministers are expected to meet in the western Indian coastal state of Goa on May 4-5.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s visit to the country will be the most senior-level one in seven years.

  • The fishing business in Fukushima survived a nuclear accident

The fishing business in Fukushima survived a nuclear accident

Kinzaburo Shiga, 77, returns to Onahama harbor in the early hours of the morning after catching a trawler full of fish off the eastern coast of Japan.

The third-generation fisherman, though, won’t go right to the market. He will first check his catch for radioactivity.

Since a horrific earthquake and tsunami in 2011 caused a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, releasing deadly toxic particles into the surrounding area, he has been performing it as part of a ritual.

Three prefectures that had previously supplied Japan with half of its catch had their fishing operations off their coasts suspended as a result of radiation leaks from the damaged nuclear facility.

That ban lasted over a year, and even after it was lifted, Fukushima-based fishermen like Shiga were for years mostly limited to collecting samples for radioactivity tests on behalf of the state-owned electricity firm Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, rather than taking their catches to market.

Ocean currents have since dispersed the contaminated water enough that radioactive cesiumis nearly undetectable in fishfrom Fukushima prefecture.Japan lifted its last remaining restrictions on fish from the area in 2021,and mostcountries have eased import restrictions.

Shiga and others in the industry thought they’d put the nightmare of the past years behind them.

So when Japan followed through on plans to gradually release more than 1 million metric tons of filtered wastewaterinto the Pacific Ocean from the summer of 2023 – an action the government says is necessary to decommission the plant safely – the industry reeled.

The Japanese government and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a United Nations body promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy, say the controlled release, which is expected to take decades, will meet international safety regulations and not harm the environment, as the water will be treated to remove radioactive elements – with the exception of tritium – and diluted more than 100 times.

But with the deadline for the planned water release looming this summer, Fukushima’s fishermen fear that– whether the release is safe or not – the move will undermine consumer confidence in their catches and once again threaten the way of life they have fought so hard to recover.

A year before the 2011 disaster, government data shows Fukushima’s coastal fishing industry landed catches worth around $69 million. By 2018, that figure had dwindled to little more than $17 million. By 2022, while it had recovered somewhat to around $26 million, it was still just a fraction of what it once was.

“I know that the government has decided to go ahead with the policy of releasing treated wastewater into the sea, but for us fishers, it really feels like they made this decision without our full consent,” said Shiga, adding that it made his “blood boil.”

In 2011, the earthquake and tsunami cut off the power supply to the Fukushima plant, disabling its cooling systems. This caused the reactor cores to overheat and contaminate water within the plant with highly radioactive material.

Since then, new water has been pumped in to cool fuel debris in the reactors. At the same time, ground and rainwater have leaked in, creating more radioactive wastewater that now needs to be stored and treated.

TEPCO has built over 1,000 massive tanks on the site to store what is now 1.32 million metric tonsof wastewater – enough to fill more than 500 Olympic pools.

But space is running out and the company says building more tanks isn’t an option. As decommissioning work approaches a critical stage, it says it needs to free up space to store the fuel debris from the stricken plant.

A Trade Ministry officialtold CNN the government considered five options, including hydrogen release, underground burial and vapor release, which would have seen wastewater boiled and released into the atmosphere, but in April 2021, officialsapproved the controlled release of the water into the sea. They reasoned that other nuclear facilities around the world had done this and it would be easier to monitor.

The IAEA told CNN it will also monitor and review the release for as long as necessary, at the request of the Japanese government.

While radioactive wastewater contains dangerous elements including cesium and strontium, TEPCO says the majority of those particles can be separated from the water and removed. TEPCO claims its filtering system, called advanced liquid processing (ALPS), can bring down the amount of those elements far below regulatory standards.

But one hydrogen isotope cannot be taken away, as there is currently no technology available to do so. Thisisotope is radioactive tritium, and the scientific community is divided on the risk its dissemination carries.

TEPCO and the Japanese government say that tritium occurs naturally in the environment. They say that the concentration of tritiated water it plans to discharge would be on par or lower than the amount other countries allow. Since 2021, they’ve been on a mission to promote public awareness about the wastewater and their plans for it, releasing videos and creating a multilingual portal.

The IAEA also says that releasing small amounts of tritium can be safe because it is already present in small quantities in everything from rain and sea water to tap water; small amounts even exist naturally in the human body.

However, experts are divided over the concept of “safe” radiation, with some arguing it is to a large extent a political rather than a scientific concept.

“For decades, nuclear power plants worldwide – including in the United States, Canada, Britain, France, China and South Korea – have been releasing waste contaminated with tritium, each under its own national quota,” said Tim Mousseau, an environmental scientist at the University of South Carolina.

But Mousseau argues tritium is overlooked because many countries are invested in nuclear energy, and “there’s no way to produce it without also generating vast amounts of tritium.”

“If people started picking on TEPCO in Fukushima, then the practice of releasing tritium to the environment in all of these other nuclear power plants would need to be examined as well. So, it opens up a can of worms,” he said, adding the biological consequences of exposure to tritium have not been studied sufficiently.

In 2012, a French literature review study said tritium can be toxic to the DNA and reproductive processes of aquatic animals, particularly invertebrates, and the sensitivity of different species to various levels of tritium needs to be further investigated.

TEPCO’s website states that it started assessing the effect of tritium on fish from Fukushima last year. A technical document published by the company in 2022 stated that “fish tritium measurement is very difficult.” It says “there are only a few analysis agencies capable of performing this measurement,” and they do not all produce the same findings.

Currently, countries set different standards for the concentration of tritium allowed in drinking water. For example. Australia, which has no nuclear power plants, allows more than 76,000 becquerel per liter, a measure used to gauge radioactivity, while the WHO’s limit is 10,000. Meanwhile, the US and the European Union have much more conservative limits – 740 and 100 becquerel per liter respectively.

Ian Fairlie, an independent consultant on radioactivity in the environment, told CNN that “two wrongs don’t make a right” when it comes to Japan’s decision to release tritiated water. He argues TEPCO should build more storage tanks to allow for the decay of the radioactive tritium, which has a half-life of 12.3 years.

In Japan, the Fukushima wastewater issue has become highly contentious due to a lack of trust among influential advocates of nuclear energy, or what’s locally known as the “nuclear village.”

The informal group includes members of Japan’s ruling party (the Liberal Democratic Party), the Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry and the nuclear industry.

“(The nuclear village) used to tell us that nuclear energy is 100% safe – but it wasn’t, as the Fukushima Daiichi plant accident revealed,” said Koichi Nakano, a political scientist at Sophia University, in Tokyo.

A series of missteps after the disasterfurther eroded public trust, according to a 2016 report written by Kohta Juraku, a researcher at Tokyo Denki University.

For instance, in 2012, the government and TEPCO presented a proposed action plan to local fishing representatives that involved pumping up groundwater before it flooded into the nuclear reactor buildings and releasing it into the sea. Fishing bodies were on board, but the plan was it postponed until 2014 after 300 tons of radioactive water leaked from the plant into the sea, infuriating fishers.

Standing between the towering wastewater tanks, Kenichi Takahara, a risk communicator at TEPCO told CNN that the company is aware that people in Japan and overseas are skeptical of the company’s assurances.

“While TEPCO has been promoting nuclear safety in the first place, the nuclear accident happened in 2011. So, we understand that there are many people who can’t trust us,” said the TEPCO official.

“We are hoping that if the IAEA and other organizations can show them that there is no problem, people will understand us,” Takahara added.

Japanese officials told CNN that they have taken the voices of locals in Fukushima into consideration and will send a message to other nations andconsumers around the world that the treated water is safe to release.

Tokyo has also created a fund of 30 billion yen ($225 million) to buy and store freezable seafood if consumer confidence takes a hit following the release, an official from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry told CNN.

And in an effort to convince both fishermen and consumers that the water to be released is safe, in September 2022 TEPCO started conducting tests on the tritium concentrations in fish, shellfish and seaweed reared in regular sea water as compared to those raised in ALPS-treated water.

But Satsuki Takahashi, an anthropologist specializing in sustainability studies at Hosei University, warned that changing mindsets is no easy feat.

“From the consumer’s perspective, whether it’s processed or not, this is wastewater. It’s hard for (people) to grasp what safety means or what risks mean,” she said.

“One of the biggest issues in terms of this wastewater, for those who used to purchase the fish from Fukushima before the disaster, is whether they are going to come back and buy the fish once the label states its provenance.”

For fishers like Shiga, the work to restore their way of life is far from over.

“We’re taking the initiative and appealing to consumers so they understand (our products are safe), but we have a hard time reaching them,” said Shiga, who fears that countries may reimpose bans on imports of Fukushima fish following the wastewater release.

“If the government releases the water into the sea off Fukushima now, everything we’ve done so far and our current efforts will be wasted,” he said.

  • Resign if you lack courage to investigate IMCIM report – Sammy Gyamfi tells SP

National Communications Director for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has asked the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, to investigate the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) report authored by Prof Frimpong or resign from post if he is incapable of doing so.

He believes a full-blown investigation into the matter is the surest way to bring closure to it.

All of the government appointees named in the Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng report have been described as “galamsey kingpins” by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ‘s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi.

The report details the operations of the former Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), citing some government officials for working against the zealous fight against the destruction of forests and water bodies.

Sammy Gyamfi, speaking to journalists in Accra on Tuesday, April 25, said many of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s appointees were neck-deep in galamsey and engaged in the activity with reckless abandon.

According to him, the report highlighted the fact that “illegal mining has been a free-for-all enterprise” for government appointees.

He served notice that the NDC would petition the Office of Special Prosecutor in the coming days to investigate and prosecute those named.

“I and other party leaders would petition the OSP, demanding an immediate investigation and prosecution of those named. We expect the OSP to investigate the matter, or he should resign if he lacks the courage to do so. We are demanding justice and action, and if they don’t give us justice, we will hit the streets and go to their homes and let them know that we will not allow them and their side chicks to enjoy galamsey while our water bodies are destroyed”.

“We would also petition parliament and ensure that they investigate the matter,” he said. But that’s not all. We also anticipate that the House will address Aljazeera’s Gold Mafia report. These issues are intertwined, and Ghanaians want to know what happened. Billions of dollars have been squandered on the galamsey fight since 2017. Those claimed to have been used to purchase drones have been wasted, as have those given to Operation Vanguard. So, if we want to investigate the matter, it should be broadcast”.

Eleven people were killed in an alleged Maoist militant attack in central India

In the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, ten police officers and a civilian were killed in an explosion while they were returning from an operation against rebels, according to the state’s chief minister on Wednesday.

Bhupesh Baghel informed reporters that the attack is thought to have been carried out by rebel Maoist insurgents and expressed his sorrow over the dead.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi “strongly condemned” the assault.

“I honor the courageous personnel who lost their lives in the attack. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. My sympathies to the grieving families,” he tweeted.

India’s government has been embroiled in a decades-long conflict with Maoist rebel groups, also known as Naxals, who launch attacks on government forces in an attempt to overthrow the state and usher in a classless society. Maoists are largely active in central India, in remote regions mainly populated by tribal peoples.

According to a 2019 report by India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, 90 districts across 11 states are affected by some form of Naxal or Maoist militancy. More than 2,100 civilians in India have been killed in the Maoist insurgency since 2010.

The government has responded with a security crackdown in areas in which the groups are active – an approach that while appearing to reduce the threat level has been criticized by some observers as heavy-handed and prone to abuse.

Villagers who live in Maoist territory are largely cut off from the country’s rapidly growing economy, and many live in fear both of rebels taking their children as recruits and violent government raids.

Some villagers in Chhattisgarh previously told CNN that they were forced to pay taxes to the Maoists, or face abuse or even torture. But if they did pay up, they risked being labeled Maoist sympathizers by government forces.

At least 22 Indian security force members were killed and 31 injured in 2021 during a four-hour gun battle with Maoist insurgents, officials said. In 2017, 25 police officers were killed and six others injured when hundreds of suspected Maoist rebels attacked a convoy in central India.

Suspected Maoists also struck during India’s elections in 2019, allegedly gunning down a polling supervisor in the eastern state of Odisha. In another incident in the same district that year, alleged Maoists approached a vehicle heading towards a polling center and forced officials to disembark before setting fire to it.

  • Prices of cement to fall – GSA

Prices of cement to fall – GSA

Ghana Standard Authority (GSA) has projected a decline in the prices of cement in the country.

The Authority says the price of the commodity is expected to fall in the near future as manufacturers submit proposals for the usage of local materials for cement production.

Director-General of the Ghana Standards Authority, Prof. Alex Dodoo reveals two cement companies in Ghana want to replace clinker, a vital ingredient in the manufacture of cement.

Ghana spends over half a billion dollars annually importing clinker and according to Prof. Alex Dodoo, the move will reduce Ghana’s dependence on clinker, thereby boosting economic growth.

“Two major players have submitted proposals to the Ghana Standards Authority to have cement not made from 100 per cent clinker. The companies intend to supply raw materials other than cement producers.

“No longer will clinker be seen as the only ingredient that will be used for cement but there will be other locally-available substitutes so that the price of cement will fall, creating jobs, thereby reducing our dependence on clinker,” he said.

He was speaking at a public workshop in Kumasi under the theme: “Facilitating the implementation of science-based sustainable construction technologies.”

The workshop came about as a result of a discussion between the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the German government in 2018 and it seeks to strengthen the capacity for Ghanaian construction laboratories and institutions to test Ghana’s buildings and develop new sustainable construction materials.

Also present at the meeting were cement manufacturers, a delegation from the Building and Road Research Institute of Ghana (CSIR-BRRI) and technical universities in Ghana.

The workshop was organised by the Technology Consultancy Centre UNESCO Centre of Excellence in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ghana Standards Authority, Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action and Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) Germany.

Dr. Wolfram Schmidt, a senior researcher at the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) Germany emphasised Africa’s role in testing out local materials for the manufacture of cement.

He however, believes a standardisation of these materials will ensure its usage in concrete technology.

“The future of concrete technology will be invented in Africa. The continent is very rich in resources but we’ve never considered it in the past for concrete technology.

“We need to find ways to bring these resources to standards because they’re the same materials which are already standardized,” he is optimistic.

“We’re trying to develop researches that can create businesses,” he added.

The Director-General of the Technology Consultancy Centre (TCC) UNESCO Centre of Excellence, Prof. Francis Davis asked industry to reach out to academia with their needs.

He believes it will help in proper uptake of the outputs.

“Industry would have to reach out to academia with their needs. Once academia is equipped with needs of the industry, they go into research in trying to find solutions to their needs. Once those solutions are found, industry because they’re interested in the research, they’ll take the solutions and continue from there,” he said.

“Once we find interest and need in the research academia has done, government and industry should fund the development,” he said.

Prof. Davis also noted TCC UNESCO’s aim at reaching out to industrial partners to solve their needs.

“Our major stakeholders of we go to them, engage them, know their needs and then come and deal with it. By this, we’ll be able to stop the research work that we finish and only end up on the shelves. We really want our research to impact society,” he said.

  • Akufo-Addo ‘begs’ World Bank, IMF to revive Ghana’s economy

Akufo-Addo ‘begs’ World Bank, IMF to revive Ghana’s economy

Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has made a passionate request to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank for concessionary loans to help the country’s struggling economy.

According to him, the loan facility is critical to the private sector which has been negatively impacted by the current economic challenges.

Making remarks following a visit from the Director General of the World Trade Organization, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to Ghana, president Akufo-Addo said the concessionary loans could be granted on more favourable terms compared to what the borrower could obtain in the marketplace.

He explained that the terms could also be based on a lower interest rate or deferred repayments.

President Akufo-Addo on his part shared that the current challenges in the economy have made it difficult for Ghana to gain access to the international capital markets for borrowing hence the decision to seek IMF assistance.

Meanwhile, the WTO Director-General, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in remarks noted that struggling countries in Africa for instance, must begin to readjust their economic infrastructure to address their challenges.

“But we are also urging at the WTO that we do something we call re-globalisation, that we use this opportunity, if we want to build resilience in certain global supply chains to look at others, other developing countries as possible places where manufacturing can also take place,” Dr Okonjo-Iweala said.

“I think these are some of the things that Ghana should consider, Ghana is a much-loved country and I think that your ability to attract investment should be something very important for you to talk to several of these global supply chains to see if they can also consider Ghana as a possible destination,” the WTO boss advised.

My mother “married the person I love – Tom Parker Bowles

The British Queen Camilla‘s son, Tom Parker Bowles, has stated that his mother “married the person she loved.” Camilla’s first husband was Andrew Parker Bowles.

Food critic Parker Bowles said on the News Agents podcast: “I don’t care what anyone says, this wasn’t any sort of endgame,” speaking two weeks before his mother is scheduled to be crowned with King Charles III. This is what happened when she married the person she adored.

Since 2005, Camilla and Charles have been wed. They supposedly became pals while Charles was a prince after meeting at a polo tournament in 1970.

Charles married Diana Spencer in 1981 but then admitted in 1994 that he had been having an extramarital affair with Camilla. Diana confirmed his infidelity and her own the following year.

Parker Bowles’ remarks follow Prince Harry’s allegations that Camilla leaked stories about the family to the British media as part of her campaign to “rehabilitate her image” after she had been cast as a “villain” by the press for her role in the collapse of his parents’ marriage.

When asked by podcast hosts Jon Sopel and Emily Maitlis if there was a “panic” regarding the widespread speculation about whether the Sussexes would attend the coronation, Parker Bowles replied: “That has nothing to do with me at all.”

Charles and Camilla will be crowned on May 6 at Westminster Abbey, a historic event marked by three days of celebrations across the country.

“I think anyone would be anxious in an occasion of this sort of importance,” Parker Bowles said. “I’d be terrified if I had to walk up wearing ancient robes. She’s tough but she’s 75, and it’s tough to do it. But she’s never complained, she’ll just get on and do it.”

Parker Bowles’ son Freddy will also play a role in the coronation as one of his grandmother’s four pages of honor, alongside his cousins and second cousin.

“I don’t think he knows quite how big it’s going to be,” Parker Bowles said when asked about his son’s reaction. “I don’t think he has any sense of the occasion. He’s a 13-year-old boy who loves football, Spurs supporter.”

He added: “There are a lot of rehearsals that are going to happen before and he is doing it with his cousins – his two best mates – and another second cousin, so they all know each other.”

Parker Bowles’ own role in the coronation will be smaller and he said he won’t appear on the balcony alongside the royal family.

“We’re just there to support our mother,” he added.

Davido describes Dangote’s influence on him

Aliko Dangote, the richest man in Africa, has been the subject of a shocking revelation from Davido.

He asserts that Dangote only purchases two cars every eight years despite his enormous wealth. The Nigerian musician revealed it in a recent interview with Forbes, where he also stated that the billionaire gives him financial advice.

The singer who held his Timeless Concert on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) also said Dangote asks him to save his money and not spend lavishly every time they meet.

Davido said; “Uncle Aliko is a very different kind of billionaire. Uncle Aliko buys like two cars every eight years. He’s a much more disciplined and very different kind of billionaire.

“Every time I see him, he just says one thing, ‘Save your money!’. There’s nothing more he tells me, every time save your money. He and my dad have been very close friends.

“And he Dangote has done well for us [Nigerians] back home. He made us a lot of industries. He just opened the biggest factory in Africa. That’s providing jobs.”

On the same platform, the Nigerian superstar revealed some traits he learned from his father and how it has greatly influenced his life.

The singer who is also a proud father of three said his religious inclination is something he picked from his father and as such he doesn’t joke with prayers at all. According to him, he and his team pray before going on stage to perform.

Beyond that, the music executive and serial hitmaker said his father is humble despite his riches.
Davido said he learned a lot from his father, Mr Adedeji Adeleke, particularly with regard to his embrace of Christianity and living a humble life.
The music executive said; “I learned so much from being around my dad, watching him in the office, hearing him on the phone, seeing how he handled life. He’s very humble, principled and a strong Christian. Before I step on any stage, my team knows not to mess with my prayers.”

A cruise passenger goes missing while traveling from Australia to Hawaii

The Australian tourist who is thought to have gone overboard on a cruise ship sailing from Brisbane to Hawaii has not yet been located by the US Coast Guard.

The Quantum of the Seas cruise liner reported a guy overboard late Tuesday night, around 500 miles (805 kilometers) south of Kailua Kona, Big Island, the coast guard said in a statement.

The cruise ship stayed on the scene for around two hours and deployed six life rings in an effort to save the passenger, but it then continued on its way after no sign of him was discovered, according to the coast guard.

A US Coast Guard Hercules helicopter conducted an aerial search of the area for six hours on Wednesday and it will resume the search at first light on Thursday, the coast guard said.

Royal Caribbean issued a statement confirming a passenger was missing.

“While on its trans-pacific sailing, a guest onboard Quantum of the Seas went overboard,” the company said in a statement, according to CNN affiliate Nine News.

“The ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue operation and is working closely with local authorities,” it added.

A passenger on board the vessel, Georgina Thompson, told Nine News she and her husband were in bed when they heard the call “Oscar, oscar, oscar” – the cruise ship line’s code for “man overboard.”

“There were lights, you know, the big lights shining on the ocean,” she said.

Quantum of the Seas is a 16-day voyage which departed from Brisbane, Australia on April 12 and is scheduled to reached Honolulu, Hawaii on April 28.

The vessel made its maiden voyage in 2014 from Southampton to New York, and was at the time branded as the “world’s smartest cruise ship” with robot waiters and features skydiving on deck.

It is 16 stories high and has room for 4,500 passengers and a 1,500-strong crew, according to the cruise company’s website.

Africa has the ability to become financially independent – Dr Afriyie

Minister of Environment, science, technology, and Innovation, Dr Kwaku Afriyie, has urged African leaders to take responsibility for their own development and to stop putting too much reliance on the West for solutions.

According to him, Ghana has been able to solve some critical health problems in the past and has demonstrated a sense of ability and innovation.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Africa Economic Summit, Dr Afriyie cited several examples of Ghana’s track record in solving issues including the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said “If we can perform very well in the health system, we’ve managed to abolish so many diseases, and guinea worms, among others. We have reduced it and we have formed a program called the expanded program of Immunization I am a product of that programme. And so, I’ve seen how we’ve co-operated together to make this happen.

“So, in the economic realm too, we can do the same. I’m saying that we should not use Western standards to define things and make things difficult for us as if we are perpetually at the bottom of the heap. Because there are so many things that are going on for us that they do not have and we can bring it into the conversation and say that Africa is also here. I’m not romanticizing poverty but we can grow at our own pace and get our own development out of that,” he added.

The Africa Economic Summit has been instituted to bring forward new perspectives and stimulate strategic discussions around Africa’s economic challenges and policy priorities.

Heads of State, Ministers, Law Makers, Governors, Heads of Financial Institutions, CEOs of Leading Companies in Africa, and other stakeholders will gather for a two-day candid discussion and high-level networking to provide strategic guidelines on the competitiveness of African nations.

  • Akufo-Addo directs CID to probe IMCIM report

Akufo-Addo directs CID to probe IMCIM report

President Akufo-Addo has directed the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to investigate the allegations in the leaked Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) report.

The ruling New Patriotic Party’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, made this known in a tweet.

The said report alleged in many parts direct and indirect complicity on the part of government and party officials in galamsey and in frustrating the work of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) which the former minister was chairman of.

In a tweet dated April 26, 2023; Ahiagbah slammed a press conference by the main opposition National Democratic Congress demanding a probe by the Special Prosecutor and Parliament into the report which was authored in 2021.

He intimated further that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Adddo had referred the 36-page report to the Criminal Investigations Department of the Police for independent investigation.

“On Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng’s document, as a party, we support the President’s prompt referral of the document to the CID, for an independent investigation. That is the democratic way, and the NDC is fully aware.

“The fight against galamsey is existential, but sadly the NDC has never seen it as such. The NDC sees it first as politics, an avenue to canvass votes either by way of promising galamseyers more galamsey when they ever win power or to do what they did yesterday in the press conference to besmirch the character of the people cited in the document on the weight of simple claims,” his tweet read in part.

The last time the presidency reacted to the report was via a statement over the weekend, alleging that the document was not official and that it contained a catalogue of grievances of Prof. Frimpong-Boateng and could best be described as hearsay.

The Presidency also tagged the document as not being an official report before Cabinet as it was submitted in an informal way.

“At the outset, it must be pointed out that the document being discussed was not an official report formally delivered to the Office of the President. On the contrary, it can only be rightly referred to as a catalogue of personal grievances and claims made by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, intended to respond to some issues he faced as Chairperson of the IMCIM.”

“The document was handed to the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President on March 19th 2021, in an informal meeting, where Prof. Frimpong-Boateng complained about public attacks and criticisms made about his tenure as Chairperson of the IMCIM,” the statement read.

GhanaWeb has been unable, so far, to verify the referral of the report to the police CID.

    Read Ahiagbah’s full post below:

The pointlessness of the NDC’s press conference yesterday is legendary.
The Al Jazeera documentary has been effectively discredited so, I wonder why they were talking spiritedly about it.

On Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng’s document, as a party, we support the President’s prompt referral of the document to the CID, for an independent investigation. That is the democratic way, and the NDC is fully aware.

The fight against galamsey is existential, but sadly the NDC has never seen it as such. The NDC sees it first as politics, an avenue to canvass votes either by way of promising galamseyers more galamsey when they ever win power or to do what they did yesterday in the press conference to besmirch the character of the people cited in the document on the weight of simple claims.

The individuals especially, the Information Minister, has responded to state his innocence, but the NDC simply refused to acknowledge it or be restrained it. Instead, the NDC went full hog to display their pictures as though they have been found culpable of anything.

What would it have cost the NDC to have waited for the CID to complete its investigation and render its report for public scrutiny? Perhaps, the NDC is not aware that President Akufo-Addo has referred Prof. Boateng’s report to the CID.

The NPP, unlike the NDC, is committed to the fight against galamsey, and thus far has made considerable gains. But certainly, there is a lot more that needs to be done and all of us must pinch in. It is my humble appeal to all Ghanaians to get involved by reporting galamsey activities, learn about its dire implications for our very existence, and on that basis speak objectively against galamsey.

The NDC must learn to keep certain things above partisan politics and galamsey is one of such things. We know the NDC’s record on galamsey is criminal, to put it mildly. The fight against galamsey proceeds without fear or favor. Let’s all get involve less the partisanship that often weakens the cooperation we need to triumph.

Please watch the attached NDC galamsey video, and I am sure you conclude with me that the NDC needs to get serious with the fight against galamsey. Their double standard on a matter as serious as galamsey is sickening.

  • Party faithfuls being appointed into EC ‘constitutionally demonic’- Dafeamekpor

Party faithfuls being appointed into EC ‘constitutionally demonic’- Dafeamekpor

Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has criticised the appointment of party faithfuls into the Electoral Commission.

He described as politically sinful the appointment of politically exposed persons as Commissioners of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana.

According to the opposition MP, the appointment of two commissioners who his party, the National Democratic Congress have alleged have strong ties to the ruling New Patriotic Party is devilish to the letter and spirit of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

“It’s politically unholy & Constitutionally Demonic for our EC to be populated by NPP party apparatchiks such as Jean Mensah, Bossman Asare, Dr. Serebuor, Mr. Tetteh, Dr. Atuahene who’re all dye in the wool elephants,” he wrote in a Twitter post sighted by GhanaWeb.
There has been uproar against two of three newly sworn-in commissioners of Ghana’s Electoral Commission by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

According to the opposition National Democratic Congress, Dr Peter Appiahene and Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani, have deep roots in the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and therefore cannot guarantee the neutrality and impartiality of the country’s electoral management body.

According to the NDC, Dr Appiahene has been a patron of the NPP student wing at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) since 2017, and was a member of the party’s 2020 National Research and Data Analysis Team. The NDC expressed concern that his appointment to the EC would hamper public confidence in the institution and undermine the conduct of free, fair, and transparent elections in Ghana.

The NDC also alleges that Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani is an activist of the ruling party, and that her immediate family has deep roots in the NPP. The party contends that her appointment to the Electoral Commission would compromise the neutrality and impartiality required of a member of the institution.

However, pro-government and New Patriotic Party elements have refuted the claims by the NDC.

In their defence, government and officials of the NPP maintain that the two officers have no power to influence election results while others have sought to dissociate the two from the NPP.

Meanwhile, the NDC has petitioned the Council of State to rescind its advice to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on the recent appointment of the said commissioners.

  • Deadline for existing subscribers to register SIM cards is May 31

Deadline for existing subscribers to register SIM cards is May 31

The National Communications Authority‘s (NCA) Joe Anokye, Director General, has declared that the current SIM Registration exercise will end on May 31, 2023. The training session started on October 1st, 2021.

The Director General announced this at a Press Briefing at the NCA Tower in Accra today. According to Mr. Anokye, there are approximately 11 million active but unregistered SIMs that will be deactivated from networks after May 31, 2023. The 11 million SIMs include subscribers who were exempted from the current exercise.

These include diplomats, refugees, and Ghanaians on official duties outside the country. Others include subscribers who have registered some of their SIMs, people with Ghana Cards who have refused to register, as well as others without Ghana cards.

According to Mr. Anokye, at the inception of the SIM registration exercise on October 1st, 2021, there were 42,749,709 active SIMs registered with various forms of identification, such as the NHIA card, passport, driver’s license, etc used for registration. However, a lot of these IDs were not verified at the time they were being used to register the SIMs.

He also indicated that out of the 36,571,257 SIMs registered as of 25th April 2023, 25,448,962 SIMs have completed both Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the SIM registration exercise using the Ghana Card, and have been fully registered and stored in the central SIM database.

Speaking about the integrity of the SIM database, Mr. Anokye said “We wish to assure the general public that the SIM Database has not been breached. In the first place, there has been no unauthorized access to the SIM Registration database; the identified abuses of the stage one process, which have been resolved, do not amount to unauthorized access to the SIM Registration database”.

He further assured the public that the Authority is working with mobile network operators to deploy shortcode *402*1# for subscribers to check the details linked to their Ghana Cards. “Effective May 1, 2023, subscribers will be able to use the shortcode to check how many SIMs are lined to their Ghana Cards and will also be able to contact the customer care centers of their MNO to delink unwanted numbers”, Mr. Anokye said.

Mr. Anokye explained that the SIM registration exercise was necessary for building trust and confidence in the use of telecommunications, financial, and other essential services, as a reliable SIM register would aid security and law enforcement activities, protect Ghana’s common peace, and promote socio-economic development. Therefore, he urged stakeholders, including the media, to support the exercise’s success.

At the same briefing, the Director General also discussed the MTN Zone Bundle, a 24-hour data bundle that offered discounts of up to 35% for various data allocations. He noted that the NCA had instructed MTN to discontinue the product until all Significant Market Power (SMP) measures were in compliance.

However, after several engagements between the NCA and MTN, the latter submitted a revised Data Zone Bundle, which the Authority has approved for implementation.

  • Stop galamsey now to protect Ghana’s cocoa industry – John Dumelo

Stop galamsey now to protect Ghana’s cocoa industry – John Dumelo

Ghanaian actor and politician, John Dumelo, has warned about the dangers of illegal small-scale mining, known as galamsey, to Ghana’s economy and environment.

In a post he shared on Twitter, he expressed concern that if the galamsey menace is not tackled urgently, Ghana risks losing its position as the world’s second-largest producer of cocoa.

John also highlighted the environmental impact of illegal mining, warning that it could lead to the total destruction of farmlands and the contamination of water sources.

He further emphasised that the use of harmful chemicals such as mercury in the mining process poses a significant risk to the health of people living in mining communities. The long-term environmental damage could also be irreversible.

“If we don’t tackle this galamsey menace, we will lose our spot as the world’s second producer of cocoa. Our farmlands will be totally wiped out, and we will start importing food. The few farmlands left will be SOAKED in chemicals. We will start importing drinking water,” John said.

Cocoa is Ghana’s most important cash crop and a significant contributor to the country’s economy, providing employment for over 800,000 people, many of whom are small-scale farmers.

  • Josef Schütz, Nazi camp guard, dies at 102

Josef Schütz, Nazi camp guard, dies at 102

The oldest individual to have been found guilty of crimes during the Holocaust has passed away at age 102.

Josef Schütz was found guilty in June of helping to murder thousands of prisoners between 1942 and 1945 at Sachsenhausen near Berlin.

While he awaited the conclusion of an appeal to the Federal Court of Justice, he served the entirety of a five-year prison term without being locked up.

Schütz had consistently denied working as an SS guard in the detention camp.

He was judged responsible for the 3,518 killings that took place. Additionally, he participated in the shooting of Soviet POWs and the use of Zyklon B gas to kill others.

Tens of thousands of people died at Sachsenhausen during World War II from starvation, forced labour, medical experiments and murder by the SS.

More than 200,000 people were imprisoned there, including political prisoners as well as Jews, Roma and Sinti (Gypsies).

Schütz expressed no regret during his trial, telling the German court: “I don’t know why I’m sitting here in the sin bin. I really had nothing to do with it.”

Despite his name and birth details found on documents of an SS guard, he claimed he had not been at the camp and worked instead as a farm labourer.

“You willingly supported this mass extermination through your occupation,” the judge said at the time.

Germany has been trying to bring former Nazi war criminals to court after a landmark case in 2011, in which ex-SS guard John Demjanjuk was found guilty.

That verdict prompted a search for individuals who were still alive.

Four years later, the so-called “bookkeeper of Auschwitz”, Oskar Gröning, was given a four-year jail term. Like Schütz, he never spent a day in jail due to a series of appeals – and he died in 2018.

And a 97-year-old former concentration camp secretary, Irmgard Furchner, became the first woman to be tried for Nazi crimes in decades in December. She was found guilty of complicity in the murders of more than 10,500 people at Stutthof camp, near the city of Danzig (modern-day Gdansk in Poland).

  • “I’m can willing to donate my liver for you” – Ayisha Modi tells KiDi

“I’m can willing to donate my liver for you” – Ayisha Modi tells KiDi

Ayisha Modi has said she will be willing to donate her liver to Ghanaian musician KiDi should the need arise for an implant, if indeed reports of him battling with health complications are true.

The young musical artiste, known for his 2022 hit song “Touch It,” got many people worried after he shared a teaser of his new song scheduled for release on 27th April 2023, with a video of him making some inferences about his health.

This comes on the back of earlier reports that he was down with a stroke – rumours which have been debunked by his management and himself.

Through the lyrics of the song, KiDi suggested he was battling a liver-related condition which would live his fans in tears if it’s exposed to them.

On the back of this, many of his fans are hoping and praying that the lyrics of the song should not be the reality of his health.

One such person is Ayisha Modi who has come through with a message of consolation for KiDi to overcome whatever he’s currently battling behind closed doors.

Additionally, the socialite – whose name is seemingly tied to all forms of benevolent acts in this world – assured KiDi of her unflinching support should he need a liver donor.

“Dear @kidimusic I pray it’s not tru but if really it’s tru and you want a donor I could help if we compatible, she wrote sharing a video of the snippet. “This lyrics are scaring me. I pray and hope it’s just a lyrics and there is nothing more to it.

“This song we won’t sing along because the message it carries is heart breaking and we as Ghanaians are not ready to accept this.”

Ayihsa Modi reacts to KiDi liver complications

Without a shred of doubt, KiDi’s upcoming song will talk about his personal life and the predicaments he has suffered in recent times concerning his health.

Amidst the reports that the singer is allegedly suffering from liver cancer, some Ghanaians have emotionally reacted to the sad-trending story.

  • Popular Christmas carol singer passes on aged 96

Popular Christmas carol singer passes on aged 96

Harry Belafonte, the singer and actor who smashed racial barriers in the US, has died at home in Manhattan, aged 96.

One of the most successful African-American pop stars in history, he scored hits with Island In The Sun, Christmas carol Mary’s Boy Child and the UK number one Day-O (The Banana Boat Song).

But his greatest achievements were as a campaigner for black civil rights in the US.

He died of congestive heart failure, said his spokesman Ken Sunshine.

His wife Pamela was by his side.

Oprah Winfrey was among the first to pay tribute, remembering Belafonte as “a trailblazer and a hero to us all”.

“Thank you for your music, your artistry, your activism, your fight for civil rights and justice,” she continued. “Your being here on Earth has blessed us all.”

“We just have to thank God that we had Harry Belafonte for 96 years,” said singer-songwriter John Legend, who counted Belafonte as a friend and mentor.

“He used his platform in almost a subversive way, because he would sneak messages in there, revolutionary messages, when people thought he was just singing about good times.”

“He gave so much, lived through so much [and] helped us grow so much as a nation and as a world.”

    Multi-million seller

Often dubbed the King Of Calypso, Belafonte was born in Harlem, New York, in 1927, the son of poor Caribbean immigrants.

A high school drop out, he joined the Navy during the Second World War, working as a munitions loader at a base in New Jersey.

    Harry Belafonte pictured in 1959
Image caption,The star broke barriers in segregated America

After the war, he pursued his dream of becoming an actor, studying drama at Erwin Piscator’s famed Dramatic Workshop alongside the likes of Marlon Brando, Walter Matthau and Tony Curtis.

He paid for the classes by singing at New York clubs, where he was backed by groups that included Miles Davis and Charlie Parker.

That led to a recording contract and, in a search for material, Belafonte began to study the folk song archives at the US Library of Congress, alighting on the Calypso music his parents had grown up with.

It proved to be a wise move. The handsome young star sparked a fad for the genre with songs like Jamaica Farewell and Day-O (a song about Caribbean dock workers), both of which featured on his third album, Calypso.

Released in 1956, it topped the Billboard charts and was said to be the first album by a solo artist to sell more than a million copies in the US.

File photo dated 30/11/88 of American actor and singer, Harry Belafonte, on a visit to Helsinki
Image caption,The singer’s good looks made him a matinee idol

His success was such that he was the first black person allowed to perform in many upmarket US venues – including some that had been off-limits to artists like Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.

His music endures in the streaming era – with the song Jump In The Line (Shake Senora) registering more than 115 million plays, thanks to its use in the Tim Burton film Beetlejuice.

As an actor, Belafonte made his Broadway debut in the musical John Murray Anderson’s Almanac in 1953, for which he won a Tony Award for supporting actor. Hollywood soon came calling, and he scored his first lead role in Island in the Sun, where he starred alongside James Mason, Joan Fontaine and Joan Collins, with whom he had an affair.

In 1957, he was described in Look magazine as the first black matinee idol in entertainment history.

His achievements were all the more remarkable in an era when black actors were usually cast as maids and labourers, stereotypes that he refused to bow to. In 1959, he famously turned down the musical Porgy and Bess, describing the lead role as demeaning.

He continued making films into his 80s, making his final appearance in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman.

In his music career, he recorded more than 30 albums, including collaborative records with Nana Mouskouri, Lena Horne, and Miriam Makeba.

Bob Dylan even made his first recorded appearance playing harmonica on Belafonte’s 1962 album, Midnight Special.

    Harry Belafonte
Image caption,The star was married three times, and leaves behind his wife, Pamela, as well as six children and eight grandchildren

A close friend of Martin Luther King, the artist was a notable and visible supporter of the civil rights movement, who bankrolled several anti-segregation organisations and was known to have bailed Dr King and other activists out of jail.

He was one of the organisers of the 1963 March on Washington, and also took part in the Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965.

“Belafonte’s global popularity and his commitment to our cause is a key ingredient to the global struggle for freedom and a powerful tactical weapon in the Civil Rights movement,” Dr King once observed.

“We are blessed by his courage and moral integrity.”

The star also campaigned against poverty, apartheid and Aids in Africa; and became an ambassador for Unicef, the United Nations children’s fund.

    ‘A moral and caring man’

In 1985, he organised the charity single We Are the World, an all-star musical collaboration that raised money for famine relief in Ethiopia.

After watching a news report on the famine, he rallied artists to raise money in the same way Bob Geldof and Midge Ure had done with Band Aid in the UK a few weeks earlier.

Featuring Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles and Diana Ross among many others, the song – written by Jackson and Lionel Richie – generated millions of dollars for charity.

“A lot of people say to me, ‘When as an artist did you decide to become an activist?’” Belafonte said in a National Public Radio interview in 2011. “I say to them, ‘I was long an activist before I became an artist.’”

Image caption,Belafonte was presented with the Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience award in 2013

Even in his late 80s, Belafonte was still speaking out on race and income equality and urged President Barack Obama to do more to help the poor.

Fiercely left-wing, he campaigned against nuclear armament, and caused controversy in 2006 when, in a meeting with Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, he described US president George W Bush as “the greatest terrorist in the world”.

Belafonte also compared Bush’s secretaries of state Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, both of whom were black, to slaves who worked in their master’s house rather than in the fields.

Statements like those made the star a frequent target of criticism, but he continued to be honoured for his artistry and humanitarian work.

Among his many awards, Belafonte was bestowed with a Kennedy Center Honor in 1989 and the National Medal of Arts in 1994. He was an EGOT – one of a rare group of people who have received all four of entertainment’s biggest awards, an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony.

  • Prof Frimpong-Boateng wanted to go into mining himself – CHRAJ Boss

Prof Frimpong-Boateng wanted to go into mining himself – CHRAJ Boss

Commissioner of CHRAJ, Joseph Whittal, has disclosed that former Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, had intentions of going into mining.

Speaking in an interview, he explained that the Professor had genuine (legal) concessions for the extraction of minerals, however, he was unable to operate at the sites due to community violence.

“We investigated allegations made against Prof Frimpong-Boateng. We went in and did a very thorough investigation, came out with our report, a 116-page report, and the offshoot is that he was not involved in any illegal mining concessions,” he said in an interview with TV3 on Tuesday, April 25.

“He had genuine concessions which he had difficulties even starting because of community violence against his company.”

This follows allegations made against the Professor to the effect that he is involved in illegal mining, which also follow an Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) report he authored.

The said report indicts a number of government officials including Information Minister, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, a former Presidential Staffer, Charles Bissue, NPP Stalwart, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko as either being involved in illegal mining popularly known as galamsey or interfering in the fight against illegal mining.

“Throughout our struggle with illegalities in the small-scale mining sector, what baffled me was the total disregard of the President’s commitment to protecting the environment.

“I can state without any equivocation that many party officials from the national to the unit committee level had their friends, PAs, agents, relatives, financiers, or relatives engaged in illegal mining. Most of them engaged Chinese working for them.

“I am not referring to party people who had their legitimate concession and were mining sustainably as they were instructed to do.

“There are appointees in the Jubilee House that are doing or supporting illegal mining or interfering with the fight against the menace,” excerpts of the document said.

Professor Frimpong also accused a former NPP MP in the Ashanti Region of selling illegally acquired concessions at GH¢200,000 each.

According to him, this infuriated the party in the constituency so during the 2020 primaries to select a candidate the electorate voted against NPP MP, the then sitting MP, who had more resources than other candidates.

However, some of the persons mentioned in the report have denied the claims. Following the release of the report, Charles Bissue, who is the Former Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) accused Prof Frimpong Boateng’s associates of engaging in galamsey.

According to Mr Bissue, a number of them including Francis Owusu Achiaw, Mike Gizo and Kwabena Boakye, are all involved in galamsey.

“I am also disappointed in Prof Frimpong Boateng to the extent that he has people around him who were doing the same thing [illegal mining],” he said in an interview on JoyNews.

He said Prof Boateng has not been consistent and truthful to Ghanaians; explaining that the former Minister was not factual in his reportage on the missing excavators.

“At the time he said 500 excavators were missing, I called him and I said Prof that is not factual. You have actually sent about three reports to the National Security Council and the report that you sent reported that we do not have up to even 300 excavators so why 500?

“I called him and he said he knew what he was doing and then three or four years down the line, you come back to say that no excavators were missing.”

I made Shatta Wale who he is today – Kay Smooth

Ghanaian musician Kay Smooth says he was the one who introduced reggae and dancehall musician Shatta Wale to the late music legend Terry Bonchaka.

In an interview on Power FM’s entertainment show, Kay Smooth asserted that Shatta Wale should always be grateful to him for being the one to connect him with Terry Bonchaka.

“I was the one who introduced him to the late Terry Bonchaka, as my young brother and I asked Terry to find a way to mentor him. Shatta Wale happened to be my school son at Winneba Secondary School, and through an entertainment show, I was able to connect the two of them.

“I believe God used me to open up ways for Shatta Wale to become who he is now,” he said.

Shatta Wale has not yet responded to Kay Smooth’s claims, but this revelation has ignited a debate among fans and industry insiders about who deserves credit for Shatta Wale’s success.

But Shatta Wale has mentioned in past interviews how influential the late Terry Bonchaka was in the early stages of his music career.

Shatta Wale has risen through the music ranks and is undoubtedly one of Ghana’s biggest music exports, having chalked up numerous successes in his over 20-year journey.

A Swedish rocket accidently lands in Norway

The week following the “rapid unscheduled disassembly” of SpaceX’s Starship, a Swedish rocket took a “non-nominal flight path” and unintentionally landed in Norway, provoking conflict with its Scandinavian neighbor.

The Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) launched the rocket on Monday at 7.20 a.m. local time (6.20 a.m. BST) from the northern Esrange Space Center. It rose to a height of 155 miles, when a number of experiments in zero gravity were conducted.

Having successfully completed its mission the rocket returned to Earth – but 25miles northwest of where it should have, landing around nine miles over the border into Norway and more than 3,000ft up a mountain. No damage has been reported around the landing site, which was six miles from the nearest settlement.

SSC recovered the payload – the scientific instruments on board – in good condition and transported it back to Esrange by helicopter, but in doing so may have sparked a diplomatic incident .

While SSC said it reported the situation to authorities on both sides of the border, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had not received a formal notification of the incident from Swedish authorities before the recovery was carried out.

‘The Norwegian authorities take any unauthorised activity on the Norwegian side of the border very seriously,’ a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said by email.

In the event of any border violation, those responsible should immediately inform the relevant Norwegian authorities, which included the foreign ministry, through the right channels, the spokesperson added.

The ministry had not received a formal notification of the incident from the Swedish authorities, she said, and work on Norwegian territory to salvage any wreckage also required prior consent.

Reflecting on the non-nominal flight path, head of sounding rocket and balloon operations at Esrange Space Center Marko Kohberg said: ‘This is a deviation that we take seriously. We are now investigating the reason why the rocket flew further northwest than nominal.

‘It is still too early to speculate about the cause, and we await more information from the current investigation.’

The rocket, TEXUS-58, is part of a European program commissioned by the European Space Agency (ESA).

Tema Motorway flyover to be completed by December 2023

By December 2023, the flyover over the Tema Motorway from Flowerpot Roundabout to the East Legon Boundary Road will be completed.

The project being undertaken by Messrs. China Railway No. 5 Engineering Ghana Limited and funded by GoG (Afriexim Bank) consists of one mainline bridge (802 m), two ramp bridges (220 m), four auxiliary roads (2.5 km), and ancillary works

The resident engineer for the project, Ing. Emmanuel Doegbotse disclosed this when The Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Kwasi Amoako-Attah, and a team of Engineers inspected the progress of work at the site.

He revealed that there will be 7 stages of construction across the motorway.

“Stage 1 will not affect traffic flow, whereas Stage 2 through Stage 4 will affect traffic movement, and vehicles will be directed through the central portion of the motorway. With Stage 5, the traffic will be taken to the extreme edges of the motorway. Finally, traffic will be brought back to its original lanes during the Stages 6 and 7 constructions.

“In all stages, maximum vehicle heights will be limited to 4.5 meters as required by law. Vehicles will be stopped by police, and if found to have flouted the required height, they will be made to turn back to their origin using the temporary U-turns created,” he further explained.

The Roads and Highways Minister, Mr. Kwasi Amoako Attah, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the work and charged the contractor to clamp down on vehicles found to have flouted the required height limit.

The general scope of work includes a dual carriageway of the entire flyover with asphaltic concrete surfacing; a ramp from the northbound (Shiashie) onto the flyover towards the southbound (Airport Hills); a ramp from the flyover onto the motorway towards Tema; a slip from the motorway to the Boundary Road roundabout; an additional exit into the cantonments from the Giffard Road Interchange; drains, culverts, streetlights, and road line markings.

Stop internal sabotage that is impeding attempts to revive TOR – NAPO to Workers Union

Members of the General Transport, Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) at the Tema Oil Refinery have been urged by Minister of Energy Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to stop the ongoing internal sabotage.

According to him, the internal sabotage among members is now destroying the progress of the once vibrant oil refinery and must therefore be addressed to ensure there is a future for TOR.

“I told these union members that, I remain committed in line with the vision of His Excellency the President at seeing the company [TOR] get back to work. I bemoaned the situation where the work being done in this direction goes down the drain because of the activities of internal saboteurs.

This sabotage, I said, will come to an end if there is a collective effort aimed at combating same, especially as we work to find a credible partner with a demonstrable track-record for the company”

The Energy Minister made this known in a Facebook post after he held meetings with the General Transport, Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) at TOR.

The meeting was to afford the minister the opportunity to address pertinent matters which have hampering efforts aimed at reviving the oil refinery which has not been operational for a few years.

Meanwhile, the Institute for Energy Policies and Research (INSTEPR) has said about $500 million was needed to revamp operations of the Tema Oil Refinery.

Since 2018, TOR has not been operational due to a lack of crude oil which serves as a raw material for the refinery. Apart from this, the refinery is also faced with other challenges like broken equipment, and piled debt, among others.

It would be recalled that the management of TOR in April 2022 sought approval from the Energy Ministry to engage some private sector players to revamp the oil refinery.

The green light on this development was however given on May 2, 2022.

What at all do you gain from having sex with a married man? – Empress Gifty quizzes

Mrs. Gifty Adorye, popularly known as Empress Gifty has expressed concern about the unnecessary cravings for married men in recent times.

In reaction to viral reports that the police officer who murdered his 26-year-old girlfriend is married with kids, the popular gospel singer asked what exactly about married men thrill young ladies in current times.

She asked women caught in such acts if sex with their boyfriend is any different from married men.

“I want to ask if sex with married men is different. How does it feel like? Is it different from the ones you have with your boyfriends’? she asked during a Facebook live video.

She, however, cautioned young ladies against dating married men, adding that, obsession and insecurities can compel such men to kill them.

“If the insecurities start, it’s either they shoot or poison you. He will poison you to death. Anyone who dates a married man should be careful. It’s okay, whatever you have gained is enough. Pack and leave. Unless you tie him down somewhere or use charms on him. He will never leave his wife.

“The first sign to look out for is insecurities. When you start seeing that, leave! The second sign is that he will get abusive. He will start beating you in public and embarrassing you in front of your friends,” she stated.

While advising young ladies to break off their relationships with toxic married men, Empress Gifty schooled them on the right way to exit such relationships without complications.

“With such relationships, you don’t break things off just like that. You need to be tricky and careful. Start with fasting. Immense him in the blood of Jesus and ask God to help him take their eyes off you. Stop giving him sex,” she added.

Your video selfie is deleted and is not added to your profile, but Tinder will keep two screenshots from your video selfie for the purposes of auditing and managing this feature.

‘Tinder daters consistently tell us that photo verification is one of their most valued safety features. The tool provides one more way to help members better assess the authenticity of their match,’ said Rory Kozoll, SVP of Product Integrity at Tinder.

‘For our 18-25 year old members, being Photo Verified gives them a 10% higher chance to match,’

Okyeame Kwame details why Lord Kenya once tied him to a bed

Okyeame Kwame on April 26, 2020, detailed how Lord Kenya and his team tied him [Okyeame Kwame] to a bed on a night they were supposed to have a rap contest in school.

This was an attempt by Lord Kenya to prevent Okyeame Kwame from showing up for the contest in order for the former to be “the only dope rapper for the night”, said the latter.

Below is the full story published by GhanaWeb on April 26, 2020.

Rapper Okyeame Kwame, a product of Kumasi Anglican Secondary School (KASS) says his colleague Lord Kenya who is now an evangelist, tied him to a bed one Saturday night during their days in high school.

The action which was executed with the help of friends of Lord Kenya was to prevent Okyeame Kwame from performing at the school’s entertainment event that night so Lord Kenya would be the only person to perform and subsequently claim glory.

In a Facebook post to join the #ThrowbackThursday bandwagon, Okyeame Kwame stated that the said incident occurred 28 years ago.

“This pic was taken in 1992. I was at KASS form 5. It was a Saturday entertainment night. I remember before this performance, Lord Kenya and his boys had tied me to my bed so that he will be the only dope rapper for the night,” parts of the post read.

Kwame Nsia Apau as the rapper is known in real life further stated that Lord Kenya’s plan foiled because his [Okyeame Kwame] friends freed him after Kenya and his team left to perform at the dining hall.

He wrote: “Kenya and his boys were tall, strong and wild. My boys and I were short and afraid. We waited for them to leave my dorm then they untied me and I rushed to the D hall. When I grabbed the mic I started my rap which was written by my rap teacher called @PowerfullaudMarcus. @plm ‘Cocaine is like Cain and will bring u pain. Stop the drugs it will lead you to rugs. Too much abortion causes abomination and contraceptive is sometimes deceptive’. Then they whole school went like ‘yeeeeeeeeeeeeeey’”.

Ghana’s borrowing capacity ranked poorly by Fitch

Fitch Ratings has downgraded Ghana’s Long-Term Local-Currency (LTLC) Issuer Default Rating (IDR) to ‘RD’ from ‘CCC’.

It has also downgraded to ‘CC’ from ‘CCC’ and subsequently withdrawn the issue ratings on five local-currency bonds issued prior to the domestic debt exchange.

It affirmed the issue rating of local-currency bonds issued on the completion date of the domestic debt exchange at ‘CCC.’

It attributed the rating action to missed payments on some of the local-currency bonds issued prior to the domestic debt exchange.

“The downgrade of Ghana’s LTLC IDR to ‘RD’ reflects the missed payments on some local-currency-denominated bonds that were not tendered or that are held by entities not eligible for participating in the domestic debt exchange”.
