UPSA commences investigations into students being ‘lashed’

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) says it has set up a committee to investigate an incident of students’ misconduct captured in a viral video.

A female presumed to be a student of the institution is seen in the video whipping a younger female said to be another student.

Many social media users allege that the victim was being punished by the ‘senior’ for spreading rumours about her.

In a press release signed by the Registrar of the Univesity, Dr Koryoe Anim-Wright, UPSA assured that an investigation into the matter has commenced.

It added that initial findings revealed that the culprit is suspected to be on a special non-tertiary programme, however, UPSA assured that after completion of the investigation, the culprits will face the penalties.

“An Investigation Committee has been set up by the University. Our preliminary investigation has revealed that the culprit is in a special non-tertiary programme in preparation for an external professional examination.

“Upon completion of the investigation, all responsible persons will face the full rigour of sanctions,” the release read.

The release emphasized that although the behaviour exhibited in the video was against the University’s code of conduct, it is committed to producing disciplined professionals and any student who violated the code of conduct will face disciplinary proceedings.

UPSA probes student misconduct captured in viral video

“The behaviour exhibited in the video goes against our Code and does a disservice to the majority of UPSA students who uphold the values of respect and professionalism for which UPSA is known.

“The University’s Code of Conduct, to which all our students subscribe, remains the document that drives student behaviour and conduct at UPSA. Students who violate the Code face disciplinary proceedings,” it added.

The wrong boxes were checked: The ex-AfDB boss diagnoses Ghana malaise

Former president of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Donald Kaberuka has diagnosed Ghana’s economic malaise at an event held by the Rwandan ruling party late last week.

Kaberuka, whiles sharing views about how African governments take actions that eventually wreck their economies decried economic mismanagement stressing that economic independence is a product of economic discipline.

Steering clear of mentioning the name of the specific country, he outlined how a West African country had returned to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and was being forced to implement measures from the multilateral vendor.

He stressed that the said government was struggling because of failure to save for a rainy day. “A country in West Africa, please no names, which was back to the IMF to begin general economic reforms is back to the IMF today, please no names.

“Why? A combination of domestic indiscipline, macroeconomic indiscipline and these external shocks. As a result, they have lost what I call political, fiscal and policy space. The decisions they are now implementing are not their decisions.

“Why? Because during that day when things were very good, they did the wrong things, they ticked the wrong boxes. Massive borrowing for example, massive spending, huge deficit without building the resilience for the day things will be very difficult,” he stressed.

Kaberuka emphasized that aside from Ghaan, 14 countries in that zone were suffering similar plights, “economic independence begins by economic discipline,” he added.

Why some people are still virgins- Olayode Juliana

Nollywood actress, Olayode Juliana, popularly known as Toyo Baby has disclosed why some people have kept their virginity intact even at old ages.

Speaking on “the honest bunch podcast,” hosted by media personality Nedu Wazobia, the actress said that some people are still virgins because they haven’t had the chance to engage in sex.

Juliana brought up the fact that some people don’t want to be virgins but end up being one because they haven’t had the opportunity to.

She continued by saying that the majority of celibate people do so because they haven’t discovered the perfect companion to do it with.

Netizens, however, stormed the comment section in reaction to the actress’ statement.

Police swarm Trump Tower in Chicago as “lady with a rifle” enters the structure

During an hour-long confrontation with SWAT personnel, a woman carrying a gun and breaking into the Trump Tower in Chicago was taken into custody.

According to two police sources who spoke to the Chicago Sun-Times on Wednesday at 11:35 a.m., the lady was carrying a gun when she entered the Trump International Hotel and Tower.

Police were called to a tower flat on the 27th level where a lady reportedly went after complaining that “she was tired of being abused by her husband,” according to the newspaper.

The woman was taken into custody and transported to a hospital to be evaluated, police said. No one was injured and there was no threat to the public.

Earlier reports indicated that it was a domestic-related incident and not tied to terrorism.

The incident came a day after former President Donald Trump was charged with 34 felony counts for his alleged role in a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels to silence her on her claims of an affair.

Cops confirmed to NBC Chicago that they received a call of service to the skyscraper at 401 N Wabash Avenue in the downtown, but did not provide further information.

Law enforcement, including SWAT officers, were concentrated at the entrance of Trump Tower by Kinzie Street and Wabash Avenue.

Traffic was closed in both directions on Wabash Avenue between Hubbard Street and Wacker Drive, according to Total Traffic.

There was no indication that the incident at Trump Tower in Chicago was related to Trump’s historic arraignment on Tuesday that drew a sizable crowd of his supporters and opponents outside Manhattan Criminal Court. Trump is the first former US president to face criminal charges and pleaded not guilty to all counts.

Trump on Wednesday commended the non-violent actions of his supporters and law enforcement and court officials.

‘The GREAT PATRIOTS inside and outside of the Courthouse on Tuesday were unbelievably nice, in fact, they couldn’t have been nicer,’ stated Trump. ‘Court attendants, Police Officers, and others were all very professional, and represented New York City sooo well. Thank you to all!’

Netizens respond to 10% tax on sports betting and lottery earnings

Some Ghanaians have reacted to the government’s introduction of 10% tax on earnings from lotteries, games of chance winnings and sports betting at the point of payout.

As part of the government’s efforts to expand the tax base and increase domestic tax revenue, gamblers should be ready to have 10% of their earnings withheld as tax should the president assent to a newly passed bill by Parliament.

Multimedia Sports Journalist Fentuo Tahiri Fentuo explained the specifics of the aforementioned taxes, stating that they will be deducted from each individual’s winnings prior to payout.

“In case you missed it by the way, there’s a new 10% tax on your winnings from betting slips. it will be deducted before the payout. Take note and stop fighting the betting companies,” he said in a tweet.

Parliament passed three new tax measures during an extended sitting on Friday, March 31, 2023.

The three new taxes are the Excise Duty Amendment Bill 2022, the Growth and Sustainability Levy Bill, 2022, and the Income Tax Amendment Bill 2022.

The bills were presented to Parliament as part of government’s plans to raise about GH¢4 billion annually in domestic revenue mobilisation.

They are also crucial to help secure Board Approval for the US$3 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) Programme after a staff-level agreement was reached late last year.

As part of measures to meet the criteria set by the IMF to qualify for a bailout, the government has completed tariff adjustment by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Publication of the Auditor-General’s Report on COVID-19 spending, and Onboarding of Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) and Road Fund on Ghana integrated financial management information system (GIFMIS).

The government in justifying the introduction of the taxes said they are critical for recovery from the current economic crisis.

1,000 Special Forces deployed to Bawku after deadly attack on immigration officers

One thousand Special Forces personnel have been dispatched to Bawku in the Upper East Region, where three immigration officers were shot at, one of whom died while trying to get food in front of a police station.

The presence of the Special Forces is intended to increase security while also assisting investigation into the killers who are still on the loose.

The Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu made this known in an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show on Wednesday.

“REGSEC, we are intensifying, government is helping us by bringing in Special Forces to Bawku, about 1,000 of them both police and soldiers.”

He added that “some are already at Bawku. Camps are already being built to house these soldiers.”

Other measures, he claims, have been put in place to improve regional security, but he declined to elaborate.

Mr Yakubu urged civil society and individuals to come forward with any information they may have about the incident.

Despite the fact that no arrests have yet been made, he claims that authorities in Bawku are working round the clock to make arrests.

“I can tell you that we are in control of the situation. Government is helping us otherwise it would have been worse than this,” he assured.

Meanwhile, the Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga has condemned the attack on personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service(GIS) which occurred on Monday, April 3, 2023.

In a press release, the legislator said it was worrying that people would be killed in their line of duty.

He, however, assured that an inquiry will be conducted into the matter.

“This is most reprehensible and should not be repeated again. An investigation into the matter must be conducted and the perpetrators brought to book,” the April 4 release read.

Older politicians tend to be more corrupt than younger ones – UG Lecturer claims

A senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kobby Mensah has opined that ‘older’ politicians

He expressed concern about the political opportunities given to persons in their old age at the expense of younger people.

Speaking in an interview on 3FM monitored by GhanaWeb, Dr Mensah drew a proportional relationship between the proliferation of corruption and the age of persons given opportunities in the country’s political system.

“When people are at the tail end of their ages of their life and certain ambitions have not been met, that is where we see our resources being dissipated because they feel like they don’t have enough time and so they want to rake in a lot more before they go.

“So the more older people we find in our political system the more corruption it is. I mean I can be blunt about it because that is the truth and when people haven’t achieved what they have set out to do, they get the opportunity at the top quartile of their ages and then they want to unleash all their ambitions at that top end,” he noted.

He stressed that young people on the other hand are inclined to be less corrupt as they tend to consider the length of their careers and are more sensitive about facing the consequences of corruption.

“But if you give a young person such opportunity, they know they have a lot of time and years ahead of them, they know that they can be summoned, they can be challenged by their own groups and older folks and they know that there can be consequences,” he stated.

The lecturer thus advocated for a more forthright discussion about the capabilities and abilities that young people posses and giving them opportunities in the country’s political space.

“Someone who is at the end quartile of their life what do they fear? They fear nothing. So I think that we have to open up the conversation, we have to open up our minds and our thinking about what these young people can do,” Dr Kobby Mensah noted.

There have been persistent concerns about the continuous stay in office by some public and political officials despite having gone past the official retirement age.

In March this year, a group of private citizens staged a protest around parliament demanding the removal of some two senior official at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

According to the group, Director General of the GRA Rev. Dr. Amishaddai Owusu-Amoah and the revenue generation officer of GRA, Juliana Essiam have continued to remain in office despite attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60 and the exhausting their extended contracts.

Ukrainian soldiers escape death as Russian rocket fails to detonate

There is video purporting to show the moment Ukrainian soldiers narrowly escape death after a Russian rocket doesn’t explode.

Within the first two seconds of the footage, we witness the weapon fall from the sky.

The cameraman appears to flee further within the structure they are recording from as the object lands somewhere out of site.

Several soldiers can be seen scrambling for cover in the video, but when the rocket does not go off as expected, the whole scene deflates somewhat.

The video was posted by US-based Twitter account @UKikaski, which claims to be military intelligence source and US Air Force veteran

The footage was captioned: ‘Some very lucky soldiers, possibly from the 81st Air Mobile Brigade, avoid almost certain death or injury after a Russian rocket did not detonate.’

Someone else took the opportunity to tease Moscow and commented: ‘Don’t worry Russian rockets never explode.’

Yesterday, Russian defense minister Sergei Shoigu announced that some Belarusian jets are now capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

He also confirmed that a number of Iskander rocket systems had been transferred to Belarus, which could be used to carry conventional or nuclear missiles.

The move is believed to be a response to Finland officially becoming the 31st member of Nato at a ceremony in Brussels on the same day.

Finland and Sweden submitted a joint application to Nato in a direct answer to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Although Sweden are still awaiting approval, Finland’s membership represents a major change in Europe’s security landscape.

The country adopted neutrality after its defeat by the Soviets in the Second World War, but its leaders signalled they wanted to join the alliance just months after Russian president Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine sent fear through Moscow’s neighbours.

The move is a strategic and political blow to Mr Putin, who has long complained about Nato’s expansion toward Russia and partly used that as a justification for the invasion. The alliance says it poses no threat to Moscow.

Finland shares an 832 mile land border with Russia- the largest in Europe.

  • World Bank bemoans slow rate of Africa’s growth

World Bank bemoans slow rate of Africa’s growth

Growth across Sub-Saharan Africa remains sluggish, dragged down by uncertainty in the global economy, the underperformance of the continent’s largest economies, high inflation, and a sharp deceleration of investment growth, a World Bank report said Wednesday.

In the face of dampened growth prospects and rising debt levels, African governments must sharpen their focus on macroeconomic stability, domestic revenue mobilization, debt reduction, and productive investments to reduce extreme poverty and boost shared prosperity in the medium to long term.

Economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa is set to slow from 3.6% in 2022 to 3.1% in 2023, according to the latest Africa’s Pulse, the World Bank’s April 2023 economic update for Sub-Saharan Africa. Economic activity in South Africa is set to weaken further in 2023 (0.5% annual growth) as the energy crisis deepens, while the growth recovery in Nigeria for 2023 (2.8%) is still fragile as oil production remains subdued. The real gross domestic product (GDP) growth of the Western and Central Africa subregion is estimated to decline to 3.4% in 2023 from 3.7% in 2022, while that of Eastern and Southern Africa declines to 3.0% in 2023 from 3.5% in 2022.

“Weak growth combined with debt vulnerabilities and dismal investment growth risks a lost decade in poverty reduction,” said Andrew Dabalen, World Bank Chief Economist for Africa. “Policy makers need to redouble efforts to curb inflation, boost domestic resource mobilization, and enact pro-growth reforms—while continuing to help the poorest households cope with the rising costs of living.”

Debt distress risks remain high with 22 countries in the region at high risk of external debt distress or in debt distress as of December 2022. Unfavorable global financial conditions have increased borrowing costs and debt service costs in Africa, diverting money from badly needed development investments and threatening macro-fiscal stability.

Stubbornly high inflation and low investment growth continue to constrain African economies. While headline inflation appears to have peaked in the past year, inflation is set to remain high at 7.5% for 2023, and above central bank target bands for most countries. Investment growth in Sub-Saharan Africa fell from 6.8% in 2010-13 to 1.6% in 2021, with a sharper slowdown in Eastern and Southern Africa than in Western and Central Africa.

Despite these challenges, many countries in the region are showing resilience amidst multiple crises. These include Kenya, Cote d’Ivoire, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) who grew at 5.2%, 6.7%, and 8.6% respectively in 2022. In the DRC, the mining sector was the main driver of growth due to an expansion in capacity and recovery in global demand. Harnessing natural resource wealth provides an opportunity to improve fiscal and debt sustainability of African countries, but the report cautions that this can only happen if countries get policies right and learn the lessons from the past boom and bust cycles.

“Rapid global decarbonization will bring significant economic opportunities to Africa,” noted James Cust, World Bank Senior Economist. “Metals and minerals will be needed in larger quantities for low carbon technologies like batteries—and with the right policies—could boost fiscal revenues, increase opportunities for regional value chains that create jobs, and accelerate economic transformation.”

In a time of energy transition and rising demand for metals and minerals, resource-rich governments have an opportunity to better leverage natural resources to finance their public programs, diversify their economy, and expand energy access. The report finds that countries could potentially more than double the average revenues that they currently collect from natural resources. Tapping these fiscal resources in the form of royalties and taxes while continuing to attract private sector investment requires the right kinds of policies, reforms, and good governance. Maximizing government revenues derived from natural resources would offer a double dividend for people and planet by increasing fiscal space and removing implicit production subsidies.

  • A woman claiming to be Madeleine McCann receives DNA results, her parents provided an update

A woman claiming to be Madeleine McCann receives DNA results, her parents provided an update

In response to a Polish woman claiming to be Madeleine McCann, her parents have released a statement.

The missing girl’s identity was allegedly promoted online by 21-year-old Julia Wandell.

Wandell made her case in front of millions of viewers when appearing on the US talk show Dr Phil.

Wandell was indeed from Poland, according to DNA test findings that were made public yesterday.

In response to the DNA results, a spokesperson for Kate and Gerry McCann said: ‘There isn’t anything to report at this time.

‘If and when there is, it will come from The Metropolitan Police.’

Wendell was convinced she is the missing child who vanished from an apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal in May 2007.

She took to Instagram and Tiktok saying she could be the missing Brit due to similarities in their age and appearance.

Medical records, accessed by private investigator Dr Fia Johansson, were brought to light ahead of the segment.

She said that Julie had reportedly suffered a skull fracture as a child which had erased part of her memory.

The brain injury – which happened when she was eight – had initially left her unable to speak or walk.

Julia told Dr Phil: ‘I have some single memories since eight, nine years old.

‘And before eight, I have only this one memory with beach and water, like sea or ocean, and there were turtles and children trying to catch the turtles and take them in their hands.

‘And I remembered light-coloured buildings, like white or very light colours, sunlight on this building.’

Dr Johansson, who is also a medium, has been granted power of attorney over Julia, the show was told.

She has dispelled any possibility Julia could be missing Maddie.

She told RadarOnline.com: ‘She is absolutely 100 percent from Poland. She is a small percentage of Lithuanian and Russian but the test results show she is Polish.

‘We learned a few things, one being that Julia’s mum is in fact now believed to be her mum, so she is not Madeleine McCann.’

Dr Johansson later wrote on Instagram: ‘We finally know the reality.

‘Although it is impossible to tell for sure without the parents DNA results on either side, the test results speak to the origins of Julia’s root.’

She explained that the results showed the 21-year-old is from Poland, with some Lithuanian and Romanian heritage.

Dr Johansson added: ‘The DNA test results did not show any connection to British or even German roots.

‘This story is much more complicated than a simple girl from a small town in Poland making a claim to get attention.

‘She truly believed what she was saying, and with so many questions about her childhood it is easy to understand where she was coming from.

‘What is amazing is parent’s refusal to resolve this nagging question for Julia.

‘A simple DNA test by parents would have resolved many questions for Julia.

‘In any case, upon the revelation, she decided to be back with her dad. I personally wish her well.’

DNA testing into who Julia’s father is is still ongoing.

Relatives of Maddie previously insisted ‘it’s obvious Julia isn’t Maddie’ and blamed mental health issues and a lust for attention after gaining more than a million followers under the handle @iammadeleinemccann.

Detectives have similarly ‘ruled out’ her account, with Pawel Noga, a spokesman for the police in Wroclaw telling Gazeta the investigation ‘contradicts the version presented by this woman’.

BoG reduces US dollar supply to bulk oil distribution companies in exchange for gold

The Central Bank plans to reduce in its U.S dollar supply to Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs) operating in Ghana’s downstream oil and gas sector.

The development comes on the back of the implementation of government’s Gold-for-policy which it believes is already yielding results, according to President Akufo-Addo.

The Bank of Ghana in its quarterly announcement of forex forward rates auction said it plans to sell about US$120 million in the second quarter of 2023 to authorized foreign exchange dealers and BDCs.

This however represents US$80 million lower than the US$200 million auctioned in the first quarter of 2023.

Kwaku Baako discloses when he first smoked ‘wee’

The Editor-In-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, Abdul Malik Kwaku Baako has made a revelation about his days growing up.

Speaking on the Wednesday, April 5, 2023, edition of Peace FM’s Kokrokoo, the veteran journalist disclosed that he was a deviant from his teen years.

“Because what was going on was some extraordinary drama, so I went into hiding and I was very high. Those days I used to do a little bit if ‘agba’ (wee). Yes, the first time I smoked wee I was 13 years.

“The big boys took me out there and they gave me wee, I was 13 years. Kwame and I broke my virginity at 13 years,” he disclosed.

Mr Baako was reacting to a discussion of an archival video showing the movable properties of his father, Kofi Baako being auctioned off by the National Liberation Council following the overthrow of the Dr Kwame Nkrumah-led government in 1966.

After successfully overthrowing Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1966, the NLC arrested ministers in the first government, who were still in the country at the time.

These ministers who were later jailed for perjury in 1967, included Nkrumah’s defence minister, Kofi Baako, who is the father of veteran journalist.

On September 25, 1967, Mr Baako’s movable properties, which included clothing, were auctioned off by the NLC as part of efforts to recover over 3 million cedis which were alleged to have been lost by the state.

A video sighted by GhanaWeb shows many people, both Whites and Blacks, trooping to the venue for the auction to buy what they could from the deposed minister’s properties.

The video also shows some of Mr Baako’s properties lined up in public view as the auction was going on. Seen in the video are couches, mattresses, wardrobes, cabinets, books, among others.

According to Reuters, over 3,000 cedis (not equivalent to current cedis) was realised from the auction that day.

Meet woman who tattooed Kennedy Agyapong’s face on her back

A New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporter in the Bortianor-Ngleshie-Amanfrom Constituency has inked an image of the party’s flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong on her back.

Speaking in an interview on Mama Radio as shared by YouTube-based TV, Oman Channel, the lady identified as Sasha White shared the motivation behind her decision to tattoo an image of the Assin Central MP on her back.

According to her, the decision is mainly due to her love for Kennedy Agyapong, his record in seeking the welfare of the Ghanaian youth and the grassroot of the NPP as well as the promising potential of a presidency led by the Assin Central MP

“People do not understand why I say I am for Ken but first of all, he is there for the youth; he is there for the youth. Two, he thinks about delegates and the grassroots,” she stated.

She emphasised that Kennedy Agyapong remains the only viable candidate to help the NPP retain power.

The New Patriotic Party has set November 4, 2023, as the date for its presidential primaries to elect a flagbearer for the 2024 presidential elections.

Ahead of the elections, the likes of the Assin Central MP, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen have emerged as the lead contenders for the contest.

But appealing to delegates of the party, Sasha White described Kennedy Agyapong as the best choice for the party and the nation at large.

“Who are you to say you don’t want Ken when even NDC members (opposition) are saying they want him?” she questioned.

  • Axim galamsey kingpin is my small boy – A Plus discloses

Axim galamsey kingpin is my small boy – A Plus discloses

Activist and politician, Kwame Asare Obeng alias A Plus has disclosed that he has an affiliation with wanted Galamsey lord, Kwame Ani.

He said he has asked galamsey fugitive, Kwame Ato Ani Asare to hand himself over to the police.

According to A Plus who described Ani as his “small boy,” he has entreated him to report himself to the police for investigations to continue into the claims made against him by the police.

“Kwame is my small boy. I posted the video. I have been in contact with Kwame Ani from the beginning of the issue and I posted the video because I wanted everyone to see the video.

“We assessed everything and came to the conclusion that if we don’t share the video, it will become the everyday issue where a person is labelled an armed robber, shot and killed by the police with no questions asked. So we wanted to make it a national issue.

“I spoke to Kwame and I asked him to hand himself over to the police. I told him I will come to Axim myself and pick him and hand over to the police,” he said.

While condemning the actions of Ani, A Plus stated that the police are equally to blame for creating a criminal out of him as a result of Ani’s work with the police as an informant.

“Kwame is a stubborn boy… but his stubbornness as a result of him being empowered by the police. When we talk about the police nobody should defend them. Only a few people in the police are good people, the majority of them are bad nuts. Just two years ago, a police officer involved in an accident was found to be transporting a stash of weed. It was in this same country that a police killed his colleague on bank escort duty because they wanted to steal the money..,” he stated.

Kwame Ato Asare Ani is the name currently dominating the media space in Ghana following events around a viral video in which he and a group of men were captured in a heated confrontation with some police officers.

The police have since labeled him as the leader of a criminal group and has put him on a wanted list even though Ani, speaking to some media houses from a hideout has denied the allegation.

A viral video showed a gang of men confronting a group of police officers for purportedly seeking to arrest their leader.

Identified in a statement later released by the police as Kwame Ani Asare, the gang leader accused the police officers of seeking to arrest him after paying them a bribe.

Amidst threats, one of the officers is seen in the video going on his knees to plead with the gang leader.

The Ghana Police Service said it received a report on March 28, 2023, that a group of officers from the Axim Police Command had been attacked by the gang in question.

The police stated that it conducted an operation which has led to the arrest of four members of the gang.

However speaking to some media houses from a hideout, the gang leader said he was no robber but an informant who has been collecting money from small scale miners and delivering to the police.

According to him, the attempt by the police to arrest him is on the back of his refusal to hand over some GH ₵100,000.00 he had collected from a galamsey site to the police.

He noted that the refusal to hand over the money is a result of the police cheating him out in various previous deals, the arrest of four members of the gang while the leader, Kwame Ani remains at large and on their wanted list.

Tutor suffers brain injury and lost her sight as student attacked her in class

A teacher who suffered life-altering injuries as a result of a student’s assault was compensated with a six-figure payment.

The east of England-based teacher also suffered psychological harm, bleeding in the kidneys, damaged bladder, loss of hearing in her left ear, and brain damage.

The instructor received £350,000 in this horrifying case, according to the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT), which was one of the more than £15.1 million in settlements the teaching union obtained for its members last year.

The payouts – which relate to cases where education staff were awarded settlements over injuries, discrimination, bullying in the workplace or contractual disputes – were released ahead of the union’s annual conference held in Glasgow this Easter.

In another case, a teacher from the south east of England received £100,000 after a pupil kicked a football at her head while she was walking to her classroom.

She fell and lost consciousness and the long-term impact of her injuries meant she had to take ill-health retirement.

The union also secured £115,000 for a teacher in Yorkshire who was dismissed after suffering work-related stress following a restructure.

She was required to take on a job which comprised of three merged roles, requiring significant extra management responsibilities.

She was placed on a sickness monitoring programme after she started being absent from work due to stress caused by the ‘excessive workload’, which led to her being fired.

Patrick Roach, general secretary from the union, said: ‘The level of compensation we have secured for teachers who have suffered physical and mental harm, discrimination and abuse at work is an indictment of an education system that is failing in its duty of care to the profession.

‘No amount of compensation can make up for the often devastating impact of physical and mental injury at work.

‘Teachers have a right to be treated with dignity and to be safe when they go to work. The NASUWT will never hesitate in pursuing legal remedies where employers fail in their duty of care to their staff.’

Meanwhile, teachers are set to go back on strike in April and May after members of the National Education Union overwhelmingly rejected a government pay deal.

The next industrial action for education workers is planned for April 27 and May 2.

  • 10% tax will be applied to lottery and sports betting winnings

10% tax will be applied to lottery and sports betting winnings

The government of Ghana is due to implement a 10% tax on earnings from lotteries, games of chance winnings and sports betting at the point of payout.

  • Tories dismiss MP who was discovered attempting to push for gaming company

Tories dismiss MP who was discovered attempting to push for gaming company

A Tory MP whose offer to accept payment from a gaming corporation in exchange for asking questions in parliament was discovered has had his or her whip suspended.

Undercover reporters from The Times recorded Scott Benton, the MP for Blackpool South, outlining the various ways he could advocate for the fictitious company.

According to parliamentary regulations, members are not allowed to advocate for a specific issue in the House or bring it up with ministers in exchange for remuneration. The acts he proposed he may do would have been a violation of those regulations.

A spokesperson for the Tory chief whip Simon Hart said Mr Benton had referred himself to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, and ‘has had the Conservative Party Whip suspended whilst an investigation is ongoing’.

But Labour said Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s failure to act before Mr Benton referred himself showed his ‘weakness’.

The controversy comes as the government carries out a major review of gambling laws, considering stricter regulations that could hit operators’ profits.

Mr Benton, the chair of the Parliamentary All Party Betting & Gaming Group, told the undercover journalists he could attempt to water down the reforms by tabling written questions and directly speaking to a minister who would make the decisions.

He also offered a ‘guarantee’ to provide a copy of an upcoming gambling White Paper to the business at least two days before publication, potentially allowing it to benefit from market sensitive information.

The MP agreed with a fee proposed by the reporters in the range of £2,000 to £4,000 a month for two days’ work.

A Labour spokesperson tied the actions of Mr Benton to the prime minister, saying: ‘Yet again we see Rishi Sunak’s weakness.

‘Instead of acting right away, he waited until Scott Benton referred himself to the Commissioner.

‘Rishi Sunak’s lack of mandate means he’s too nervous to act against his own troops. No wonder Tory MPs think they can get away with blue murder.’

Lib Dem deputy leader Daisy Cooper said the revelations were a ‘damning indictment of the state of the Conservative Party’.

Mr Benton, who will not sit in the Commons as a Tory while the whip is suspended, said in a statement: ‘Last month I was approached by a purported company offering me an expert advisory role.

‘I met with two individuals claiming to represent the company to find out what this role entailed.

‘After this meeting, I was asked to forward my CV and some other personal details. I did not do so as I was concerned that what was being asked of me was not within parliamentary rules.

‘I contacted the Commons Registrar and the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner who clarified these rules for me and had no further contact with the company.

‘I did this before being made aware that the company did not exist and the individuals claiming to represent it were journalists.’

Downing Street said it was first and foremost a matter for the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner Daniel Greenberg, and whipping matters were for the Whips Office.

Amaarae details her top two challenges as a female artiste

The silky voice singer Amaarae has revealed that the toughest moment as a female artiste is funding.

According to her, people find it very hard to take female artistes seriously.

Speaking to AJ Sarpong and Giovani on 3FM Drive, the 28-years old said her “first challenge is funding. Having the money to not only push your ideas but to promote your ideas.

“I think you always have to get very creative with funding and how you find funding. Especially starting off in Ghana and as a Ghanaian creative and thinking about how to attack your territory but then attack the rest of the world at the same time and having the support to do that can be very hard.

“Coming straight from here I’ve experienced that but I think with time and as you start to learn the ins and outs you find your support that believes in you and what you want to do”.

“Second challenge is being a female and also making authentic music. I think people find it very hard to take you seriously. I remember when I first started a lot of radio wouldn’t play me, as I told you AJ was one of my only and early supporters. Aside from TV3 and if I’m forgetting anyone I’m sorry but I just can’t remember anyone that’s away willing and open to be like ah cool,” she added.

She also spoke about people not paying her when she was starting.

“People weren’t even trying to pay me at all when I first started. A platform offered me MTN credit and that very same platform a few years later had to come back and pay me like crazy money just to do a song” Amaarae said.

The songwriter was featured in the much-anticipated sequel of Black Panther, Wakanda Forever and is currently promoting her new song ‘Reckless & Sweet’.

  • Prophet Nigel Gaisie sues Nana Romeo over sex allegation

Prophet Nigel Gaisie sues Nana Romeo over sex allegation

Prophet Nigel Gaisie has filed a suit at the High Court of Justice, Amasaman, against Abdul Karim, popularly known as Nana Romeo for making sexual allegations against him.

In a writ the pastor shared on his Facebook page on April 5, 2023, which the statement of claim was not attached, the defendant is to enter an appearance within eight days after service.

The caption read: “No long talk this time, if you say or write, reproduce any silly or false stuff about me, I will test the law. Enough of the falsehoods against my person and ministry…”

“The prophetic and prophets in Ghana will never go down, the agents of darkness will be put at their right places,” he added.

Meanwhile, one Stancy Amoateng has been added to the suit. It is unclear who the individual is and the role the said person played in the sex allegation.

What Nana Romeo said about Nigel Gaisie:

The Accra FM show host in an interview on Restoration with Stacy, when asked what memories hurt him the most, said Nigel Gaisie had an affair with his (nana Romeo) girlfriend although the preacher knew they were dating.

According to Nana Romeo, he regarded Nigel Gaisie as a Godfather only for the prophet to stab him in the back.

He recalled how he became close to Nigel Gaisie, disclosing that it was after his interview with the preacher about the demise of musician Ebony Reigns went viral.

“When Ebony died, I called Nigel because I had seen a video of his prophecy about the incident. He wasn’t popular but the interview shot him to fame so we became friends. I booked musicians to perform at his church,” Nana Romeo recalled in the Twi language.

“One holiday, I decided to go out with my girlfriend. The lady had been good to me. She bought a car for me, rented an apartment for me and I told him all the good things the lady had done for me. I don’t know if that was what enticed him.

“The lady and I were about to go to the beach to enjoy the holiday when Nigel called me on the phone that he needed me to check out something for him so I should come over. That was when I introduced the lady to him.

“Later, he started texting the lady, going out on lunch dates. So, his junior pastors were shocked and surprised at his actions and they called me and told me about it.

“One day, I went to his house. They didn’t grant me access; he called the security personnel to tell me he was not around. Later, he called to apologise about the act and claimed he didn’t know what came over him. The thought of this hurts me so much,” Nana Romeo narrated.

Sharing a snippet of his interview on Instagram, Nana Romeo disclosed why he had to break silence over the matter.

His caption read: “This is how Nigel Gaisie destroyed my relationship. I decided not to comment on this issue but I finally had to…”

  • Where do the Silk Roads lead to?

Where do the Silk Roads lead to?

First coined in the 19th century, the term “Silk Road” refers to a much more ancient reality, dating back to the first exchanges between China and the Roman Empire. Beyond their purely commercial dimension, these maritime and land routes, which enabled the spread of ideas, knowledge and religions, remain an invaluable source of exchange and cooperation.

Usually attributed to the German geographer Baron Ferdinand von Richthofen, the term “Silk Roads” – or Seidenstraße – was used in the 19th century by German historians and geographers exploring connections that existed two millennia ago between the Mediterranean area during the Roman Empire and the Han Dynasty China. Silk caught the imagination of scholars because it was (and is) a luxury product that was easily transportable – and worn in imperial Rome.

Although silk was popular in the Roman Empire, some disapproved: Seneca, a Stoic philosopher of Ancient Rome, felt that the material was too revealing and exposed too much of the female body; some others, like Pliny, thought that Romans should not spend their money on extravagances; others still complained that buying goods from outside the empire fuelled the economies of others, to the detriment of Rome.

In fact, connections between Rome and China two thousand years ago were modest. This comes as no surprise; these two worlds were separated by a great distance and by many other empires, peoples and cultures.

For some contemporary scholars, the fact that the foundational concept of the Silk Roads was centred on linking two parallel empires and omitting all others is problematic – as is the fact that the label was coined by European scholars. In other words, the world is being described and seen in different ways in today’s age of decolonization.

    A wide and interconnected world

In the end the Silk Roads is in many ways a much more flexible, nuanced and useful term than many other names and labels. It is best employed as a term centred on exchanges, dialogues and interactions, rather than as a mere geographic term that excludes.

In the popular imagination, the Silk Roads often means an exotic holiday that takes in parts of China, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. The reality, however, is that a much wider area can be included within the umbrella of this label.

It is impossible to write about the history of religions, including Christianity, Islam and Buddhism for example, without considering how these spread into South and South-East Asia, as well as into the Middle East, the Gulf, North Africa and far beyond.

Likewise, it is impossible to think about the spread of knowledge and technologies – from the diffusion of crops to the ways that metallurgical techniques were introduced, adopted, adapted and improved – without linking the nomadic peoples and the world of the steppes with the cities and towns of territories and peoples who connected Asia, Africa and Europe.

It is intellectually strange to think of the Silk Roads as a set of connections limited only to land routes, and to distinguish these from maritime lanes that joined coastal regions not only to each other in the Gulf, Indian Ocean and on into the East and South China Sea, but also to locations in the interior.

Hence, some scholars, including myself, believe the Silk Roads should be considered without limits and as inclusively as possible. Rather than viewing the “Middle East” or “South Asia” (to name just a few) as distinct regions from each other and from other places, it is far preferable to see them as connected via a complex series of exchanges.

    Multiple motors of exchange

While expensive textiles and objects still capture the eye of modern commentators, the Silk Roads extend far beyond silk. For some historians, the most important motors of exchange were economic and commercial: people travelled to trade with each other, and as such, goods and products that were rare or unusual were valued highly – such as silk or ceramics; or aromatics like frankincense; or even highly prized foods and fruits, such as the “golden peaches of Samarkand”. Indeed, there are guide books written in many languages, locations and periods advising people where to buy the tastiest foods at the best prices.

“For the rulers of the empires built along the Silk Roads, fostering tolerance and diversity was not just a sign of enlightenment; it was also good business practice”

Trade provided rewards for those able to either produce or tax goods. Many rulers understood that finding the right balance between revenue generation and stifling business was important. Among the most enlightened were the Mongols, who built a vast empire that stretched from the Pacific to the Black Sea and Mediterranean. Often depicted as savage conquerors, the Mongols were supremely gifted administrators of territories and lands across different climates and terrains. They were also able to incorporate peoples of many different languages and faiths. As with the Arab caliphates, the Mughals in India, the Safavids in Persia or the Ottomans (whose empire straddled Asia, Africa and Europe), fostering tolerance and diversity was not just a sign of enlightenment; it was also good business practice.

However, there were many other motors that drove exchange along the Silk Roads. One of the most important was that of religion and faith. Sometimes this took place through efforts to introduce new beliefs either through inspiration, through inducement or through force. Sometimes, though, monks, priests and others journeyed to faraway lands to listen, learn and see for themselves. This was the case with the celebrated Chinese monk Xuanzang in the 7th century, who made an epic journey through China’s Xinjiang to Central Asia, India and Sri Lanka and then homewards.

“The expeditions of Marco Polo in the 13th century and Ibn Battuta in the 14th century serve as perfect examples of what the Silk Roads represent: networks along which to travel, learn, inform and exchange”

There were also travellers who undertook long expeditions, sometimes as part of diplomatic missions, sometimes simply to learn about people living far away. The most famous of these, Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta, serve as perfect examples of what the Silk Roads represent: networks along which to travel, learn, inform and exchange.

Of course, as the recent pandemic has reminded us all, travel and trade routes can also bring unwanted results. Disease is a deep-rooted theme of global history in general and of the Silk Roads in particular. Two of the most deadly pandemics – the plague of Justinian of the 6thcentury and the Black Death eight hundred years later – spread along networks that had brought people closer together. In both cases, the death toll was catastrophic, likely measuring in the millions. Recent advances in the ways we can assess the genomic sequence of both outbreaks has led to new insights into how, where and why the disease caught hold – with climate factors likely playing a significant role.

    A geopolitical hotspot

The Silk Roads took on a new and different resonance in the modern era, where it became short-hand for rivalry between a new set of imperial powers, above all in Central Asia. While some scholars think that the rivalries that played out between Russia and Great Britain in the 19th century in the heart of Asia can be easily exaggerated, they proved very influential for thinkers at the time. Around a hundred years ago Halford Mackinder, a British political geographer, proposed what later became known as the “Heartland Theory”, an idea that whoever controlled the centre of the Eurasian landmass would prove to be politically, economically and militarily dominant.

That idea has its own limitations; but it has proved influential in the era that has followed the end of the Cold War, where the Silk Roads have once again captured the imagination of the public as well as policy planners across the globe. One reason for that is that around two thirds of the population of the world live to the east of Istanbul, a region that also produces most of the world’s oil and gas, as well as a significant proportion of its wheat and rice. What happens in this wide area is therefore of major geopolitical significance – not least given the growing ambitions of many of the states of this region.

The shift in opportunity and potential was a core part of the announcement of China’s Belt and Road Initiative in Astana in September 2013. This was presented by President Xi Jinping as a means of encouraging greater levels of exchange and interaction, not only across Asia but beyond too, something that was backed up with massive investment into a wide range of projects, ranging from power plants in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) to ports in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Greece to railways in Ethiopia. The Belt and Road Initiative, like the Silk Roads themselves, has evolved over time, and so have global perceptions of it.

The Silk Roads can help us understand today’s dynamics from a wider historical perspective. A historian will always evoke how much can be gained by studying the richness of the past, looking at how past cultures and civilizations flourished (or failed). A historian can also point out that these networks, which play such a central role in global history, are an important source of cooperation and collaboration for the present and the future.

And that, of course, is why the UNESCO Silk Roads project is so significant: by preserving, promoting and fostering ideas about dialogue and exchange, and reminding how crucial those have been in the past, the project helps encourage study, discussion and collaboration between peoples in an age where that has never been more important – and moreover, one where they are becoming increasingly rare.

On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the UNESCO Silk Roads Programme, we want to highlight Peter Frankopan’s extensive research in the Eurasian trade route network. This article was originally published on the UNESCO Courier special edition: https://on.unesco.org/3zOFM3P

  • 3 qualities that make women fall for men without even trying

3 qualities that make women fall for men without even trying

Women have been stereotyped throughout history as being the more sentimental and emotional gender, while men have always been the focus of their love.

We all have preferences when it comes to what we find beautiful in a mate, despite the fact that many individuals would like to reject the importance of attraction in human contact.

While there are numerous things that might cause women to fall in love with men, there are three in particular that tends to make them fall in love with men without even trying.

    Confidence:

Confidence is an attractive trait that has been scientifically proven to make people more attractive. Women are naturally drawn to men who exude confidence, as it is a sign of emotional stability and security.

Men who are confident tend to have a subtle sense of self-assurance and self-belief rather than being haughty or boastful. Men who are confident in themselves, take the initiative, and are not easily frightened are admired by women. A confident man is also more willing to take chances, which some women may find attractive.

A man dresses well and cleans good

Physical appearance is an essential factor in attraction, and how a man presents himself can make all the difference. Men who take care of themselves and their appearance are more likely to attract women.

Dressing well and having good personal hygiene show that a man takes pride in himself and cares about his overall health and well-being. Women are also more likely to be attracted to men who smell good, so investing in quality cologne or perfume can go a long way.

    Kindness:

While physical attraction is important, women are also drawn to men who are kind and compassionate. Kindness is a sign of emotional intelligence and empathy, which are qualities that many women find appealing.

Men who are respectful, considerate, and caring towards others are more likely to attract women because they are perceived as more trustworthy and reliable. Being kind also shows that a man is not self-centered, which can be a refreshing change from the typical alpha-male persona.

The three traits that may make women fall for guys without them even trying are confidence, grooming, and compassion. Although the definition of attractiveness is arbitrary and changes from person to person, these three characteristics are typically viewed as being universally attractive to most women.

In the dating world, men who exhibit these traits are more likely to be viewed as desirable and attractive. As a result, if you’re a male trying to win over women, concentrating on these three traits would be a smart place to start.

  • Inside the movable ferry where 500 asylum seekers are expected to be housed

Inside the movable ferry where 500 asylum seekers are expected to be housed

The government has revealed that the interim residence for asylum seekers arriving on British soil will henceforth be a three-story barracks boat.

The Bibby Stockholm, a sizable apartment complex built atop a floating platform, has been leased for 18 months, according to the Home Office.

According to the Home Office, the “basic and functional accommodations” would have 24-hour security to “minimize the inconvenience to local populations.”

Bibby Stockholm contains a basic gym, bar, games room and more than 220 en-suite bedrooms, according to a fact sheet from owners Bibby Maritime.

New arrivals will start to be housed on the ship ‘in the coming months’, the Home Office added.

The deal was signed earlier today by the Home Office to charter the 91-metre ship docked in Portland Port, Dorset. The department has not yet set out of the cost of the agreement.

Immigration minister Robert Jenrick said: ‘The Home Secretary and I have been clear that the use of expensive hotels to house those making unnecessary and dangerous journeys must stop.

‘We will not elevate the interests of illegal migrants over the British people we are elected to serve.

‘We have to use alternative accommodation options, as our European neighbours are doing – including the use of barges and ferries to save the British taxpayer money and to prevent the UK becoming a magnet for asylum shoppers in Europe.’

The Bibby Stockholm was once used by the Netherlands to house 500 asylum seekers in the 2000s.

During this time, a Dutch watchdog denounced the ‘oppressive environment’ people who fled war and persecution had to live in – it’s since been ‘refurbished’.

Bibby Marine said in a statement to Metro.co.uk: ‘Bibby Marine is a provider of practical, safe, and comfortable accommodation solutions for a wide range of clients across the globe.

‘Due to legal agreements, we cannot provide any details on individual charter agreements.

‘Our floating accommodation barges offer a cost-effective solution for those in need of good quality accommodation. All have been refurbished to a high standard, catering to the safety and comfort of residents.’

‘The Bibby Stockholm has been refurbished and has comfortably housed workers from various industries including construction, marine and the armed forces over the years,’ the company added.

It will be the first vessel used in deeply controversial plans to reduce hotels used to house asylum seekers.

Barges normally used for offshore construction projects, disused cruise ships and military bases are among the sites Home Office officials are considering.

The plans have been denounced by international rights organisations, refugee advocacy groups and politicians on both sides.

Enver Solomon, CEO of the Refugee Council, told Metro.co.uk: ‘A barge may make headlines, but it’s a completely inadequate housing option for vulnerable people who have come to our country in search of safety having fled beatings and death threats in countries such as Afghanistan and Iran.

‘They should have access to safe and appropriate accommodation including having proper physical and mental health support, access to education and community links.

‘A floating barge does not provide what they need nor the respect, dignity and support they deserve.’

Solomon added that there would be ‘no need’ for the barracks ship if the Home Office handled the spiralling claims backlogs.

The Tory MP for South Dover, where the Bibbly Stockholm will be moored, has threatened legal action over the floatel.

Richard Drax, known for backing anti-immigration policies, said the barge was ‘dumped on the door’ without the Home Office consulting him.

‘With 500 migrants or more dumped here, I cannot see this is a sensible move, so for those reasons and many others I reject it,’ he said.

‘We already know some migrants have disappeared from hotels, we fear some into gangs. Are they going to stay here?’

Hotels housing asylum seekers have been the site of vandalism and violence in recent months as far-right groups stage often fiery protests in front of them.

While an investigation in January revealed how dozens of asylum seekers have been reportedly kidnapped by gangs.

Fizza Qureshi, CEO of the Migrants’ Rights Network, told Metro.co.uk: ‘We’re shocked to hear the Government’s proposals to house people fleeing persecution in dehumanising and potentially dangerous accommodation such as barges.

‘It shows a clear disregard for the well-being of people it should be protecting.

‘We have been speaking to people in Home Office accommodation and it is evident the Government’s increasingly hostile policies are exacerbating stress and fear. In particular, uncertainty around housing is one of the leading causes of anxiety for them.’

Refugee groups have spent years raising the alarm over the use of hotels and other temporary accomodations for asylum seekers.

Amid a claims backlog, families have spent months or even a year in temporary accommodation, according to a report by Refugee Council.

These months-long stays can take a deep toll on the mental health of asylum seekers, the campaign group warned.

Asylum seekers have described to Metro.co.uk being housed for months in far-flung hotels, living on an allowance that barely covers the costs of bus passes, phone bills and clothing amid the cost-of-living crisis.

‘It is clear that people fleeing human rights abuses,’ Qureshi added, ‘are now having their rights abused here too.’

  • Putin claims that relations with the US are “in a severe crisis

Putin claims that relations with the US are “in a severe crisis

In a speech to the country, President Putin asserts that there is a “serious crisis” in relations between the US and Russia right now.

Putin announced the appointment of 17 new ambassadors during a meeting of the Russian Security Council, including new appointees to the US and across the EU.

In a rambling and disorganized speech, Putin asserted that the “difficult situation” in the world prevented normal international cooperation but added that Russia was open to cooperative relationships with “any country.”

Russia would not isolate itself on the world stage, he added, and said he hoped that actions which cause harm to the country’s diplomatic relationships would soon come to an end.

However, Putin nevertheless took swipes at the West during his speech, and told the European Union’s ambassador that relations between Russia and the bloc had ‘seriously degraded’ and that the EU was responsible for initiating the current geopolitical crisis.

He also told new US ambassador Lynne Tracy that relations with Washington were in a ‘deep crisis’, and claimed that US support for the 2014 revolution in Ukraine had led to the current conflict.

Meanwhile, Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said chaired a meeting in Brussels in which he stated that Ukraine’s future membership of the alliance had to be based on the country being independent and democratic, which is now challenged by Russia’s invasion.

Stoltenberg told a media briefing after a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels that Ukrainian forces should have the highest possible level of interoperability with the alliance when the war ended.

He also claimed Russia’s announcement that it will station tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus shows that a Russia-China joint statement days earlier amounted to ’empty promises’.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement came just days after Russia and China jointly declared countries should not deploy nuclear weapons outside their borders, Stoltenberg told a news conference at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

He said this showed such statements are ’empty promises and what we need to watch closely is what Russia is doing.’

Stoltenberg said NATO had not seen any signs so far that Russia was following through on Putin’s announcement.

However, Stoltenberg said Russia was becoming more and more dependent on China, partly as a result of international sanctions imposed on Moscow over its war in Ukraine.

‘Trade with China has become even more important for Russia,’ he said.

Also at his news conference, Stoltenberg reiterated his call for the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested last Thursday in Russia.

‘This is about freedom of the press,’ he said.

  • Jay Bahd struck out of VGMAs ‘Best New Artiste’ category

Jay Bahd struck out of VGMAs ‘Best New Artiste’ category

Organizers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) have heeded the petition of Ghanaians over the inclusion of popular Asakaa group member, Jay Bahd, in the Best New Artiste category of this year’s edition.

Jay Bahd was among seven budding artistes namely; Malcom Nuna, Djay, Lasmid, DJ Azonto, Chief One, and Ewura Abena who were nominated for that category.

Following the earlier announcement of nominees, a large section of netizens took to social media to protest that the ‘Anadwo’ hitmaker outweighs that particular category.

However, after thorough deliberation, the VGMAs board has considered the request of fans.

To that effect, they have released a statement that announces the necessary corrections made to the nominees’ list, and their decision to strike out Jay Bhad from that category.

“After deliberations, the board agrees that Jay Bhad is not new to the scheme because of his shared nomination on Yaw Tog’s sore for ‘Collaboration of the Year’ in 2021. This means he is not eligible as nominee for the New Best Artiste of the Year category of the 24th Vodaphone Ghana Music Awards,” parts of the statement read.

Man confesses to killing an NHS nurse and her children

Saju Chelavalel, a triple murderer, admitted to killing Anju Ashok, an NHS nurse, and her two children.

During the 12-minute hearing, Chelavalel, 52, admitted to killing Anju, her six-year-old son Jeeva Saju, and her four-year-old daughter Janvi Saju.

At their Petherton Court apartment in Kettering, the nurse and her two children were murdered.

On December 15, at around 11.15 am, police were called to the location where they discovered Ms. Asok, a nurse at Kettering General Hospital, and her children suffering from terrible wounds.

Jeeva Saju was also killed in the brutal attack

Ms Asok, who moved to the UK from Kerala in India in 2021, died at the scene while Jeeva and his sister Janvi, who both joined Kettering Park Infant Academy earlier this year, died at hospital.

Forensic post-mortem examinations found that all three died as a result of asphyxiation.

Chelavalel attended Wellingborough Magistrates’ Court on December 19, where he was remanded in custody.

He appeared at Northampton Crown Court two days later via video link.

A coroner’s inquest opened in Northampton in January heard the medical cause of death for the children had been listed as strangulation, while Ms Ashok had died of asphyxia.

The inquest was then adjourned until July 6.

Ms Ashok was described as a ‘committed and compassionate’ nurse by her colleagues at Kettering General Hospital.

Chief Executive Deborah Needham said she was ‘loved and respected by her dear friends and colleagues. All our thoughts are with her friends and family as they come to terms with this sudden loss.’

Assisted by an interpreter in the dock, Chelavalel answered ‘guilty’ to two of the counts he faced, but in relation to the charge of murdering Jeeva he replied: ‘I don’t know what happened to the children, but I plead guilty.’

Adjourning the case until July 3, Judge David Herbert KC said: ‘There can only be one sentence in law, namely a life sentence, but the judge dealing with your case on that day will have to set the appropriate minimum term.’

Fotocopy and father apologize to Kuami Eugene

Young Ghanaian musician, Fotocopy has withdrawn the harsh words he used against Kuami Eugene when he confessed in an interview how much he hates him for turning down a collaboration request and allegedly discouraging him.

Kuami Eugene in reaction to the nine-year-old comment explained that he holds nothing against him adding that Fotocopy is too young to understand the impact of his utterances.

It seems both parties have reached an understanding with Qwaachi, the father of the young talent rendering an apology to Kuami on behalf of his son during an appearance on Okay FM with Abeiku Santana.

“If our words offended Bra Kuami, we beg that we forgive us and forget about what transpired. Let us live in peace…we have been brothers for a long time…I also want to render an apology to Bra Kuami, let’s live in harmony,” these were the words of Qwaachi to Eugene.

Also, Fotocopy who broke down in tears at the studios of Okay FM apologized to Kuami Eugene. “Brother please I am sorry,” he said to his senior colleague. The two upon instructions from Abeiku Santana embraced each other to signify peace at last.

Kuami who wholeheartedly accepted their apology assured the public of his love and support for the young talent.

“I have said earlier that whatever is going on, he is a kid. I don’t think he has a hand in it because even if the hate he mentioned came from him, I don’t think he understands it. He is just a child.”

Kuami once again admonished Fotocopy to embrace himself for ‘rejections’ from Ghanaian musicians.

“I would have matched up with him if he was my age mate…all I can say is that whether someone is behind this or not, I want him to understand that we don’t always have things our way…I have asked for collaboration from a celebrity but they never replied. I was never mad,” he added.

  • At least 20 found guilty in a significant child sex abuse probe

At least 20 found guilty in a significant child sex abuse probe

In one of the largest child sex abuse investigations by West Midlands Police, a total of 21 people have been convicted guilty of their roles in the crimes.

During the course of almost ten years, seven victims, who ranged in age from six to twelve, were assaulted in Walsall and Wolverhampton.

According to West Midlands Police, the crimes were initially discovered after one of the victims was taken to the hospital with a questionable injury and the physicians made a recommendation for safeguarding.

After several trials, the last of which concluded this month, 13 people have now been jailed with four others due to be sentenced.

Jail terms imposed ranged from 28 months to life, while four of those convicted received non-custodial terms.

Detective Chief Superintendent Paul Drover, of West Midlands Police, said a large team of officers investigated over more than half a decade, uncovering what he called ‘systematic abuse that has to be some of the most shocking I have seen in my career’.

‘Our investigation turned into one of the biggest investigations in the West Midlands into child sexual abuse,’ he added.

Mr Drover said: ‘Seventy interviews were conducted and we heard high numbers of disclosures made by the children involved.

‘We had specialist support from the National Crime Agency detectives, specialists in disclosure and exhibits, plus all the support from colleagues at the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), local authority social care, children’s mental health services and health services.’

He added that a report into what had taken place and understanding how it happened as well as any ‘lessons to be learned’ was being co-ordinated by Walsall Safeguarding Children’s Board, and was expected to be published in due course.

‘They are looking at what occurred, and over how long,’ Mr Drover said.

The trial process was delayed by the impact of the Covid pandemic, added the senior police officer.

Mr Drover praised the victims, some of whom are now adults, for coming forward, allowing the perpetrators to be brought to justice, saying they had suffered ‘shocking and abhorrent’ abuse.

‘They have been through a significant amount of trauma,’ he said, adding ‘it has had a significant and ongoing impact on their physical and mental wellbeing’.

‘To get the confidence to come forward and talk to care professionals, to police is huge,’ he said.

‘I am genuinely thankful, and also to the juries involved in this.

‘The safeguarding of children is at the forefront of police, of health (workers), of school teachers, this to me is a perfect example of how we work together to bring a significant case to the stage where… (offenders) will be found guilty of significant offences and receive up to life terms in prison.

‘This is an ask from me, for those subject to sexual harm to have the confidence to come forward, talk to teachers, nurses and doctors, police officers, tell us what is going on.

‘We spent several years on this investigation, and we continued to run this until we got to the conclusion we have seen.

‘So I am hoping this gives some confidence (to those victims) out there to come forward to talk to professionals.’

Joanne Jakymec, CPS chief crown prosecutor, said: ‘The offenders in this case perpetrated the most appalling catalogue of sexual abuse of the utmost gravity, causing the victims physical harm and extreme psychological harm.

‘With the exception of one of the offenders who admitted what they had done, none of the rest have shown the slightest remorse.’

She praised the ‘bravery’ of victims and witnesses, adding ‘without their support it would not have been possible for the prosecution team to convict this large network of child abusers’.

Marry a rich man – Christiana Awuni to women

Ghanaian actress, Christiana Awuni has advised women in the country who plan to settle down in marriage to do so with wealthy men.

In an interview with Kofi Adomah, the popular actress firmly stated that women must never harbour the intention of getting married to a man who is poor under any circumstance.

Christiana Awuni explained that most men who are primarily poor shockingly get a weird taste for some particular women once they begin to make money.

What this means is that, if you are a woman who decides to stick with a poor man with the hope that you guys are building a life together, he might ditch you when he begins to get money.

Christiana Awuni defined a rich man as one who has a nice place to stay and can at least provide the basic needs of a lady.

  • It can’t dedicate my life to one person – Wanlov discloses

It can’t dedicate my life to one person – Wanlov discloses

Ghanaian musician Wanlov the Kubolor has expressed his opinion on dedicating one’s life to one person in a recent interview with Doreen Abanema Abayaa on Talkertainment.

Wanlov, who is known for his unorthodox views on life and relationships, stated that he cannot dedicate his life to one person because it feels unnatural to him.

“I don’t think I will dedicate my life to one person and be like me and you. I can’t; it doesn’t feel normal to me. It feels unnatural to me to dedicate my life to one person.

“It feels like the eggs and one-basket thing. Your emotions. Your feelings, your dreams. You can’t store it all on one hard drive,” he said.

For Wanlov, the idea of putting all his emotions, feelings, and dreams into one person does not sit well with him.

He believes that it is risky to entrust everything to one person and that it goes against human nature to do so.

“I have never been in a relationship before since I was a teenager that ever worried me. I have trained myself to not go deep,” he added.

Wanlov revealed that he has never been in a relationship that worried him.

He stated that he has trained himself not to go deep into relationships, and he believes that is the reason why he has never experienced the pain of heartbreak.

“I can’t imagine loving someone, and when I don’t see them, I can’t sleep, eat, or do other stuff. I can’t imagine it,” he said.

Wanlov also expressed his inability to comprehend the intensity of love that requires one to be unable to function when away from their partner.

He believes that love should not be an all-consuming force but rather a natural part of life that complements other aspects of one’s life.

  • Customers in Tema owe GWCL GHS 140 million- Deputy Managing Director

Customers in Tema owe GWCL GHS 140 million- Deputy Managing Director

Customers in Tema alone owe the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) a total of GH¢140 million out of the about GH¢800 million owed by customers across the country.

Out of the GH¢800 million, Accra and Tema alone share 60 per cent while the 40 per cent is owed by the remaining regions.

The GH¢800 million arrears outstanding ballooned from GH¢684 million in January 2022 after the Public Utilities Regulation Commission (PURC) negotiated a 22 per cent increment in water tariffs as against the 120 per cent proposed by the GWCL.

Deputy Managing Director of the Company, Peter Deveer, disclosed these on Monday when the Company embarked on a revenue mobilisation exercise to recover all arrears owed the company.

According to MrDeveer, 90 per cent of the total arrears were owed by private entities while government agencies were responsible for 10 per cent.

While acknowledging the government institutions for their efforts in paying the bills, he said the private entities blamed the default on their bill payment on unfavourable economic conditions.

But to MrDeveer, that was not enough justification to evade their bill obligations as the entire nation, including the GWCL bore the brunt of the harsh economic downturn.

He said the private business for instance, were at liberty to adjust prices of goods and services to meet their operations but that was not the case of the GWCL as its prices were determined by a regulatory body.

He stated that the operations of the GWCL had become very expensive owing to the pollution of water bodies by illegal mining, sand winning and farming either inside or close to river bodies which had increased the turbidity of the rivers where water is extracted for treatment.

MrDeveer said that the situation had become a strain on the operations of the company since it had to use foreign exchange to procure chemicals to treat polluted water, to meet the World Health Organisation’s standards.

He lamented that even in the face of the 22 per cent negotiated by the PURC instead of the 120 per cent proposal which the PURC deemed too ambitious, private consumers refused to pay their bills.

“If we are not careful, the arrears will choke the life out of GWCL and Ghana cannot live without water, hence the exercise to recover the monies,” he said.

At the Royal Nick Hotel in Community six, management made a part payment of GH¢10,000 out of a total of GH¢41,000 and made a commitment to pay the outstanding arrears of GH¢31,000 in two weeks’ time.

The Tema International Hotel also paid GH¢20,000 it owed the company when a team of the official task force visited the facility. Similarly, the SOS Hermann Gmeiner College also paid its bill of GH¢46,000.

Others who had not made any commitment to pay their bills were disconnected including some residents at Valco Flats in Community six.

Management of the GWCL entreated customers to cooperate with the teams as they undertake the all important exercise in an effort to collect and mobilise the much needed revenue to improve water supply services in the country.

  • Does his manhood vanish if he cheats? – Counsellor asks wives who fight cheating men

Does his manhood vanish if he cheats? – Counsellor asks wives who fight cheating men

It is pointless for a wife to fight her cheating husband and his side chick because, after the extramarital coitus, the man’s phallus is still intact for the wife to always enjoy as well since it is not plucked away by the other woman, marriage counsellor Juliana Antwi Asante has said.

According to the President of Marriage Scaffold, it is important for women to handle cheating husbands and the circumstances around such situations with wisdom, maturity and tact, instead of fighting.

“So, you go and see your husband even on top of a woman and you go quarrelling? If you bring this to me as a counsellor, I’ll tell you there’s no need to quarrel because, excuse my French, after the sex, the penis is not plucked off; so, why would I fight?” she wondered.

In her view, being calm and mature about the whole situation as a wife, could rather save the situation.

Mrs. Asante said it all depends on “the way you [wife] handle the man” and “he would not even go [cheat] again”.

“And, I bet you, it will get to a time when you serve him, he will have difficulty eating because he doesn’t even know what I’ll do next”, the counsellor told Korku Lumor on Class91.3FM’s morning show on Wednesday, 5 April 2023.

“There’s no need fighting and that respect must be in the home”, she insisted.

Also, she noted that her respect for a cheating husband would go up a notch higher if he willingly confesses to his sin.

“If you come to confide in me, as a wife; when you even tell me [you cheated on me], it gives you another level of respect”, she added.

“You, a husband, a man of your own; going out to do this and coming out to tell me? Oh, aren’t you a lovely husband? Aren’t you a darling?” she praised.

She pointed out: “Maybe my stance would be weird but [these] are things we’ve taught people and they have practiced and have really worked; that is what you talk about”.

  • Cash App developer Bob Lee murdered in San Francisco

Cash App developer Bob Lee murdered in San Francisco

The chief product officer of Mobile Coin and the creator of the mobile payment business Cash App, Bob Lee, was attacked in San Francisco yesterday.

About 2.35 am on Tuesday, members of the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) responded to reports of a stabbing in the Rincon Hill area of the city.

When they arrived, a 43-year-old guy was there with “life-threatening” wounds.
He was attended to on the spot before being sent to a nearby hospital, where he passed away.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released by authorities, but friends identified him as Bob Lee, a software developer who previously worked for Google, where he helped develop early Android cell phones, and Square.

While working for Square, a firm founded by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and billionaire Jim McKelvey, he was responsible for developing the company’s mobile payment app. This project was eventually launched as Cash App in 2013.

Dorsey confirmed the news about Lee on Nostr, a distributed social media network.

‘It’s real. Getting calls. Heartbreaking. Bob was instrumental to Square and Cash App. STL guy,’ the ex-Twitter CEO wrote.

Lee later became the chief product officer for cryptocurrency startup MobileCoin.

‘Bob was a force of nature,’ MobileCoin CEO Joshua Goldbard told ABC7. ‘Helped to birth Android and CashApp into our world. Moby was his dream: a privacy protecting wallet for the 21st Century. I will miss him every day.’

Musicians’ career die faster in Ghana than it grows – Darko Vibes

Ghanaian musician and songwriter, Darko Vibes has reiterated the need for why the Ghanaian music industry needs to be a collective agenda.

Speaking in an interview with Sammy Kay on the Go online show, the talented musician said the agenda for pushing Ghanaian music should be aggressive and intentional. He cited the example of how Nigeria has a policy and an agenda of pushing their music to the world. The Afro beats singer disclosed that this is a deliberate effort to make make them stay top.

According to him, despite been grateful for what doing music has added to his life, Ghana music industry is full of struggles unlike Nigeria.

Also, the Je M’apelle hitmaker stated that here in Ghana, musicians career die faster than they grow. He lamented on how the music space in Ghana is full of struggles without proper structures.

He explained that when a musician attain a certain height in his or her career, the growth pattern becomes stagnant. There is no further growth to break barriers globally hence they ‘die’ with all the potentials and talents.

On April 9, 2023, Darko Vibes together with his team and colleague musicians will light up Mallam Gbawe with his free maiden concert at his ‘hood’ dubbed Easter Evasion concert

  • Zara Aleena’s aunt requests legislation requiring murderers to appear for sentence

Zara Aleena’s aunt requests legislation requiring murderers to appear for sentence

The aunt of Zara Aleena is advocating for harsher punishments for criminals who avoid appearing in court with the families of their victims.

If murderers ignore victim impact statements, Farah Naz said on BBC Breakfast, their prison terms should be increased.

She remarked, “Surely the judgment is part of the punishment… we need to see that the process would deter further wrongdoing and how can the procedure feel like a punishment if the criminal exercises their piece of power?

It’s the final piece of authority that needs to be removed, at least in our opinion.

‘Otherwise we don’t have people deterred from committing crimes if they’re just moving from cell to cell there’s no sense of punishment.’

By law, defendants are allowed to choose not to attend their sentencing hearing, but it’s sparked outrage from campaigners, who say this denies families the chance to see justice being served.

Thomas Cashman, who shot and killed Olivia Pratt-Korbel in her own home, refused to come out of his cell yesterday to face the nine-year-old’s loved ones.

    Latest London news

His defence barrister rattled out an excuse that he was upset over prosecutors singing ‘We Are the Champions’ after the jury found him guilty.

A judge slammed Cashman’s absence as ‘deeply disrespectful’ to both the court and Olivia’s grieving family as he was handed a life sentence.

It meant Cashman – unlike the vast majority of criminals in the UK – did not have to listen to the victim impact statements read out in court.

In December, Zara’s killer Jordan McSweeney was jailed for life after committing ‘almost unimaginable violence’ on the law graduate as she walked home in Ilford, east London.

But he refused to leave his cell for sentencing because he did not want to watch the CCTV of what he did.

Ms Naz said the family wanted her killer to hear how he had ‘completely destroyed’ them.

After meeting with her family, justice secretary Dominic Raab said he was looking into whether the law could be changed to compel offenders to attend their sentencing, and grant judges powers to impose longer prison sentences on those who opt to skip court.

She added: ‘I think there are other ways to make the convict come to face their judgement and that would be to add time to their sentencing or there can be other ways.’

  • 87-year-old pensioner “died from hypothermia due to concern of rising energy costs”

87-year-old pensioner “died from hypothermia due to concern of rising energy costs”

An inquest has heard that an 87-year-old woman who got “fixated” on rising energy costs passed away after developing hypothermia when she turned off her heating during the winter.

The family of Barbara Bolton made an effort to persuade her to set aside concerns about rising prices and provided her with portable heaters so that she could stay warm.

Nevertheless, family members were concerned that the ‘proud’ retiree may have switched them off when she was alone herself.

On December 11, 2022, her grandson Nathan used a key to get into her house after she didn’t answer the phone.

He found his elderly relative unable to speak while sitting in the freezing kitchen of her terraced home in Bury, Greater Manchester.

She was raced to hospital, where doctors reported that she had a temperature of just 28.9C and she passed away four weeks later on January 5.

Tests revealed that Ms Bolton, who worried that she was becoming ‘confused’ in the lead-up to her death, was suffering with vascular dementia alongside hypothermia.

But her primary cause of death has been listed as recurrent pneumonia.

Recording a verdict of misadventure, senior Coroner Ms Joanne Kearsley said: ‘Obviously her death was linked to hypothermia.

“One reason why she had developed hypothermia was because she had decided, herself, that she doesn’t want to put her heating on.

‘She has clearly become fixated on the worry of putting her heating on, no matter what anyone was saying to her.’

Barbara’s family agreed during the hearing at Rochdale Coroners Court that she could often be ‘proud’ and preferred to make her own decisions about her welfare.

A statement from her son Mark Bolton, read out by Ms Kearsley, said: ‘She wouldn’t put the heating on in the house.

‘But she had been told by her family, particularly in respect of the time, not to worry about that. You brought your mum mobile heaters for her house.

‘If you called to see her, they would be turned on. But you don’t know if they were turned on when you left.’

A statement from Dr Ansari, a consultant physician who treated Ms Bolton after she was brought to Fairfield Hospital in Bury, added that she had ‘deliberately not turned her heating on for fear of high energy bills’.

‘This admission was probably an avoidable admission’, he said.

He went on: ‘But because she was very obstinate and was also a self-sufficient proud woman, she would not really accept help, even from her family.’

Dr Ansari explained that staff tried to treat her but those suffering from health issues like Ms Bolton’s had an ‘extremely poor’ prognosis.

Ms Kearsley said Ms Bolton’s family cared deeply for her, and though it had been her decision to turn her heating off, she hadn’t intended to end her own life.

She said: ‘Barbara was a very close part of your family and was cared for very well by all of you. But she was a very proud lady, and very stubborn, I suspect.

‘For some reason, it became entrenched in her view that she couldn’t put her heating on at that time for whatever reason. Only your mum will know if she was worrying about it.

‘No matter what anyone was telling her, she wasn’t going to do anything any differently.’

  • Popular photographer of ‘Black is Beautiful’ movement, dies at 85

Popular photographer of ‘Black is Beautiful’ movement, dies at 85

Kwame Brathwaite, the pioneering activist and photographer whose work helped define the aesthetics of the “Black is Beautiful” movement of the 1960s and beyond, died on April 1, aged 85.

His son, Kwame Brathwaite, Jr, announced his father’s death in an Instagram post that read in part, “I am deeply saddened to share that my Baba, the patriarch of our family, our rock and my hero has transitioned.”

Brathwaite’s work has been the subject of resurgent interest from curators, historians and collectors in recent years, and his first major institutional retrospective, which was organized by the Aperture Foundation, made its debut in 2019 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles before touring the country.

Brathwaite was born in 1938 to Barbadian immigrants, in what he referred to as “the People’s Republic of Brooklyn” in New York, though his family moved from there to Harlem and then to the South Bronx when Brathwaite was 5 years old.

He attended the School of Industrial Art (now the High School of Art and Design) and, according to profiles of Brathwaite in T Magazine and Vice, was drawn to photography by two moments. The first was in August of 1955, when a 17-year-old Brathwaite encountered David Jackson’s haunting photograph of a brutalized Emmett Till in his open casket.

The second was in 1956, when — after he and his brother Elombe co-founded the African Jazz Arts Society and Studios (AJASS) — Brathwaite saw a young man taking photos in a dark jazz club without the use of a flash, and his mind became alight with possibility.

Using a Hasselblad medium-format camera, Brathwaite attempted to do the same, learning to work with limited light in a manner that enhanced the visual narrative of his imagery. He would soon also develop a darkroom technique that enriched and deepened how Black skin would appear in his photography, honing the practice in a small darkroom in his Harlem apartment.

Brathwaite went on to photograph jazz legends performing throughout the 1950s and ’60s, including Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk and others.

“You want to get the feeling, the mood that you’re experiencing when they’re playing,” Brathwaite told Aperture Magazine in 2017. “That’s the thing. You want to capture that.”

By the early 1960s, alongside the rest of AJASS, Brathwaite began using his photography and organizing prowess to consciously push back against whitewashed, Eurocentric beauty standards.

The group came up with the concept of the Grandassa Models, young Black women whom Brathwaite would photograph, celebrating and accentuating their features. In 1962, AJASS organized “Naturally ’62”, a fashion show held in a Harlem club called the Purple Manor and featuring the models.

The show would go on to be held regularly until 1992. In 1966, Brathwaite married his wife Sikolo, a Grandassa Model whom he had met on the street the year prior when he asked if he could take her portrait. The two remained married for the rest of Brathwaite’s life.

By the 1970s, Brathwaite’s focus on jazz shifted to other forms of popular Black music. In 1974, he traveled to Africa with the Jackson Five to document their tour, also photographing the historic “Rumble in the Jungle” boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in what’s now the Democratic Republic of Congo that same year. Commissions in this era also saw Brathwaite photographing Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone, Bob Marley and other music legends.

Throughout the ensuing decades, Brathwaite continued to explore and develop his mode of photography, all through the lens of the “Black is Beautiful” ethos. In 2016, Brathwaite joined the roster of Philip Martin Gallery in Los Angeles, and he was continuing to photograph commissions as recently as 2018, when he shot artist and stylist Joanne Petit-Frère for The New Yorker.

T Magazine’s 2021 profile, published on the occasion of Brathwaite’s retrospective traveling to the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, Texas, noted that the photographer’s health was failing such that he was unable to be interviewed for the article. A separate exhibition, “Kwame Brathwaite: Things Well Worth Waiting For,” is currently on view at the Art Institute of Chicago, where it will remain until July 24.

Netizens react to the introduction of Digital Transport Fee

Users of ride-hailing apps have expressed their dissatisfaction with the introduction of the digital transport fee.

According to the aggrieved users, this new fee will increase their cost of transportation.

One user on Twitter said “Ei Ghana my motherland, so if I pick Uber too I have to pay extra plus my fare. @Uber_Ghana does the Digital Transport Fee go to you or government of Ghana?
    I want to know.”

Another user also wrote, “Nothing dey vex me pass Uber’s Digital Transport Fee.”

    DTF introduced

Ghanaians who patronize ride-hailing apps are in to pay more as the government introduces a Digital Transport Fee (DTF) effective April 1, 2023.

According to a directive from the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA), the fee has been pegged at GH¢1 per trip.

One of the ride-hailing companies, Uber, in an e-mail to its customer noted that a new fee will be applied and it will be set at GH¢1 per trip.

In addition to this, a booking fee of GH¢2 will also be applied for every trip ordered via the ride-hailing companies.

The DTF will be displayed as a separate line item on your receipt for transparency.

Last year, as part of measures put in place by the government to ensure that the country’s tax net is broadened, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) announced that it was targeting the e-commerce, e-sports, and gaming sector.

According to the Chief Revenue Officer at the Investigative Unit of the GRA, Clement Amankwah-Bonsu, the revenue arm of the government is poised to leverage the e-commerce, sports, and gaming sector to generate revenue for the country.

Speaking at the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition dialogue on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, he stated categorically that it’s about time that people who trade on various digital platforms are taxed.

“We can say now there is e-commerce and gaming all over and so the GRA can tap or leverage on e-commerce and gaming and rake in more revenue for the country. So, we need to up our game here and ensure that all those activities that go on on the various digital platforms are also taxed,” Amankwah-Bonsu said.

However, in 2019, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) announced plans to rope in Uber drivers to pay taxes to the state.

Although the Solution Developer at the GRA; Patrick Frimpong Danso noted that the module to use was still under preparation, the authority has announced it wanted the payment of Vehicle Income Tax (VIT), Personal Income Tax, and e-tax stamp via mobile phones in order to widen the tax net.

With the Uber driver’s tax payment plan, Mr. Danso stated operators of the service; Uber Ghana will retain a percentage of the earnings of the driver to honour his or her tax obligation.

The move also became necessary because other commercial drivers like taxi and ‘trotro’ drivers point out that while they are compelled to pay tax, their Uber counterparts work and earn money yet do not have tax obligations.

Having more children is important than getting married – Kubolor

Ghanaian musician and actor Wanlov the Kubolor, known for his unapologetic and unconventional views, has spoken about his stance on marriage.

The conversation revolved around Wanlov’s personal beliefs on marriage and parenthood, which he shared candidly.

In an interview with one of Talkertainment’s hosts, Doreen Abanema Abayaa, when asked about his views on marriage, Wanlov the Kubolor made it clear that marriage was not for him.

He said, “Marriage is not for me, no, no. I feel like having a child is heavier than marriage. Having a child is a responsibility between two people that, no matter what, you have to uphold more than holding a marriage together.”

He also noted that the commitment and responsibility that come with having a child are far more significant than being married.

The artiste believes that two people who choose to have a child together are bound by a stronger bond than those who are married.

“Having a child, that can of marriage is superior to me than a wedding. I am actually married. I married for a green card in America in 2006, but I never applied,” he expressed.

The ‘Konkonsa’ artiste went on to reveal that he had been legally married in the United States since 2006.

However, he clarified that he only got married for a green card and never applied for one.

He said, “I just picked up my stuff and left, but I am still legally married in America, but it’s just for the papers.”

NDC primaries: Dumelo, Fred Nuamah’s vetting suspended indefinitely

The vetting of all three Parliamentary aspirants of the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency have been suspended indefinitely.

National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reportedly suspended the vetting of all contestants in the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary primaries indefinitely.

According to a news report by TV3, the parliamentary hopefuls for the constituency – John Dumelo, Fred Nuamah and Moses Barfi Acheampong – did not appear before the vetting committee as of the second day of the vetting.

The report indicated that the NDC has said that it will decide how to proceed with the primaries for the constituency after the deadline for vetting elapses on April 5, 2023.

The parliamentary primaries for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency has attracted interest after the decision of Fred Nuamah, an actor and film director, to challenge his close friend, whom he describes as his brother, former NDC parliamentary candidate for the constituency, John Dumelo.

Fred Nuamah insists that he had the blessing of John Dumelo to contest in the Ayawaso West Wuogon primaries because he (John Dumelo) told him that he would be gunning to become the party’s candidate for the expected Guan Constituency in the Oti Region.

But John Dumelo has accused Fred Nuamah of betraying him, saying that he never gave his blessing to contest for the primaries.

Meanwhile, at least 37 candidates have been vetted for the parliamentary primaries in the Greater Accra Region, which is slated for May 14, 2023.
