Two girls, aged 12 and 13, “enticed a colleague into the woods to stab her to death

Authorities say two adolescent girls have admitted killing a classmate with a knife.

The victim, who was only given her first name, Luise, failed to come home on Saturday after seeing a friend.

The next day, in a woodland close to a defunct train station in the western town of Freudenberg, a thorough police search led to the discovery of her body.

Speaking yesterday, Florian Locker, head of Koblenz police’s homicide department gave further updates on the two teenagers questioned in relation to the death.

Two children admit to killing 12-year old girl in Germany

He said the two girls, aged 12 and 13, ‘made statements about the matter and in the end admitted the crime.’

Luise had been friends with her killers but the trio had fallen out, according to reports.

They all attended the same school with the 13-year-old in the same class as the victim.

Both suspects are too young to be held criminally responsible for their actions in Germany, where the age of criminal responsibility starts at 14.

The knife, or knives, involved in the stabbing are yet to be located.

Luise was found with a number of stab wounds and died from a huge loss of blood.

Prosecutors told the press they are assuming the ‘crime was committed by two children from the girl’s circle of acquaintances’.

They were taken into a youth welfare office – a local government department specifically tasked with the support and protection of children, adolescents and families.

Prosecutor Mario Mannweiler said: ‘What might be a motive for children to commit a crime may not come to an adult’s mind.

‘So we can’t say anything on that right now because otherwise, I would be forced to mention details from the investigation and I am not allowed to do that.

‘This is a case which is shocking, both for us as well as for all of you. We are aware of that.’

Hendrik Wuest, the governor of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia where Freudenberg is located, said he was appalled by the killing.

He said: ‘It is incomprehensible and unbearable that children are capable of such horrible acts.’

He promised that the authorities would do everything in their power to shed light on the reasons and circumstances of the crime.

Sammy Lazio features Keche Joshua on ‘Chosen One’

Hiplife musician, Sammy Lazio has released his latest single titled Chosen One which features Keche Joshua of Keche fame.

According to Sammy Lazio, he was motivated to write the song based on the fact that marriages are currently facing break up since we are not in normal times.

“People get married and it doesn’t even take a week and they are divorced, sometimes they get divorced after about a year and they have kids who tend to suffer as a result.

“I thought about all these and said let me just write a song. This song addresses marital issues and love as a whole, before you go in for someone as your partner you guys need to be compatible, you should study each other and know that staying together will be easy.

Love should be unconditional but these days, relationships are conditional. Know that when you are going into marriage you are going into it for life, the institution of marriage is a lifetime thing,” he stated

“It is for my fans out there who have a perfect relationship, the chosen one. They should keep them well because if you have such a partner and you lose them, you might not get that type of person again so handle them with care.

“As the lyrics of the song says, Odo Bi Ye Owu so if you have that perfect partner, do well not to lose them.

“I would like to thank Cee Jay for putting the beats together for me and Scripture who always records me in the studio and to all my fans for their support, they should keep supporting me and know that I will always bring them great stuff,” he said.

Chosen One is available on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Tiktok as well as streaming platforms including audiomark, boomplay, Spotify, apple music among others.

Sammy Lazio would like to dedicate the song to the fans and everybody who has the right person in his or her life.

  • I could not sleep due to the increase in exchange rate – Dr Bawumia

I could not sleep due to the increase in exchange rate – Dr Bawumia

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed that he suffered sleepless nights when Ghana went through a phase of persistent hikes in exchange rates leading to a rise in the pricing of fuel products.

According to the vice president, the situation and the quest to find a workable solution around it left him sleepless.

“One moment which gave me a lot of sleepless nights personally was when at one point, the forward exchange rate of GH¢19 to the dollar was used to price fuel at the pump,” Dr Bawumia stated during the commissioning of the new head office of the Bulk Oil Storage Transportation Company in Accra on Wednesday, March 15, 2023.

“We were faced with how much higher it could go. We were faced with a very critical situation because we didn’t have enough foreign exchange reserves to meet this persistent demand.

“Today, you are seeing that in Kenya, they are facing a significant shortage of foreign exchange reserves resulting in petroleum queues.

“So, we had to think outside the box to prevent Ghana from going through that situation… and this is where the thinking for gold-for-oil came in,” the vice president added.

The head of the Government’s Economic Management Committee, however, noted that the quest to find a solution led to the conception of the government’s Gold-for-Oil policy.

Touting the policy as the most important macroeconomic policy in the history of the country relative to the exchange rate, fuel, and food pricing, the vice president emphasised that the policy is already achieving its intended results just three months after its implementation.

”In my humble opinion, it is the most important macro-economic policy intervention to deal with the exchange rate depreciation, fuel price, and food price issues that we have had.

“We have not only seen a decline in prices of fuel from GH¢23.00 per litre to around GH¢12, but we have also seen stability in the exchange rate,” he noted.

Among other things, the vice president noted that the country will make an annual savings of some US$4.8 billion in foreign exchange when the policy is optimised to cover 100% of the country’s foreign imports by the end of the year as projected.

“I’ve been told that next week we are likely to see a reduction in fuel prices and next week is actually not far. It is tomorrow. Tomorrow we will see the decline in prices that we expect. This is remarkable. Two and a half months ago you were at 23 cedis and today you are at 12 cedis per litre and falling. That is a good point.

“But let me note that the most important aspect of the Gold-for-oil policy is not just the reduction in fuel prices. But the most important aspect is the savings in foreign exchange that the Bank of Ghana will make as a result of the lower demand for forex to import oil.

“That saving is huge, we are currently importing about 50 to 60 percent of oil under this policy, the goal is to move to 100% and that will be done this year,” the vice president stated while commissioning a new head office for the state-owned Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST).

    About the Gold-for-oil policy

Last year, Dr. Bawumia announced a new government policy dubbed gold-for-oil. The policy, as explained by the government, is to allow the government to pay for imported oil products with gold, in a direct barter with gold purchased by the Central Bank.

Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire reinforce security on water resources

The governments of Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire have pledged to co-ordinate and reinforce security operations at their borders to prevent activities that affect the quality of the Bia and Tano water resources.

Also, the two countries are to halt all illegal mining activities that lead to the pollution of the basins and share best practices and knowledge in mining and other necessary areas.

These were contained in a communique issued after a bilateral meeting between the two countries on the Bia and Tano transboundary water systems.

A joint communique issued and signed in Accra by the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Ms Cecilia Abena Dapaah, and the Ivoirian Minister of Water and Forestry, Mr Laurent Tchagba, said all illegal mining activities that lead to the pollution of the two basins must be brought to an end “as a matter of urgency.”

According to the ministers, in spite of the mitigation measures that both countries have been implementing, the level of pollution of the two river basins was still beyond the normal standard.

The communique noted that reactivating and making permanent, the Joint Ministerial Committee and the Joint Technical Sub-committee to monitor pollution caused by illegal mining on the transboundary river basins and also expand the committees to include other relevant sectors, was necessary.

At the end of the bilateral meeting, Ms Dapaah said that Cote d’Ivoire’s Water and Forestry Minister, Laurent Tchagba, expressed gratitude to the government and the people of Ghana for the warm and fraternal welcome accorded them, and for the exceptional quality of the organisation of the meeting.

She assured that Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire would remain committed to implementing the recommendations.

  • $8m VW vehicle assembly plant inaugurated in Tema

$8m VW vehicle assembly plant inaugurated in Tema

The Caretaker Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, on Wednesday inaugurated an $8m Volkswagen (VW) vehicle assembly plant in Tema.

The assembly plant by the German car manufacturer, VW Ghana is located in the Free Zones Enclave in Tema.

Speaking at the inauguration, the caretaker minister stated that the assembling, and ultimately, production of vehicles in Ghana would create new and highly skilled citizens jobs.

    • Inset: Mr Jinapor (second from right) cutting the tape to inaugurate the plant. With him are Ms Biene (middle), Mr Peprah (fourth from right) and other dignitaries Photo: Jessel Lartey Therson-Cofie

He added that it would further reduce the use of foreign exchange to import second-hand vehicles and, at the same time, promote the exportation of Made in Ghana cars to other African markets that would in turn earn Ghana much-needed foreign exchange.

“The vision is to make Ghana a fully integrated and competitive industrial hub for the automotive industry in West Africa,” he explained.

Mr Jinapor stated that as a result of the government’s effort to make Ghana an industrial hub, it created the Ghana Automotive Development Policy to aid that agenda.

“Government created the Ghana Automotive Development Policy to incentivise and facilitate local manufacturing and assembly in Ghana and establish it as a fully integrated and competitive industrial hub,” he explained.

The caretaker minister called for more stakeholder investment into the automotive and component manufacturing sector as it was “a key sector for economic growth and transformation and a driver of employment.”

He urged all Ghanaians to purchase locally assembled vehicles as they were of the same quality as the ones produced in Europe.

Mr Jinapor hinted at further collaborations between VW and the government to increase the automobile manufacturing capacity of the country.

The Managing Director (MD) of VW Ghana, Mr Jeffery Oppong Peprah, stated that the new assembly plant was a scale-up of the old assembly plant and a reconfirmation of its investment in the country.

“Having our assembly plant in Tema which is closer to the port would reduce the cost of transportation of the vehicle parts,” he added.

Mr Peprah said that the assembly plant, which can assemble 5,000 units per annum, would produce vehicles like “Tiguan, Teramont, Passat, Polo, Amarok and T-Cross.”

He stated that VW would leverage the AfCFTA to reach a broader market and invest in the economic growth of Ghana.

Mr Peprah appealed to the government to fully implement the Ghana Automotive Development Policy for companies in the automobile manufacturing industry to leverage and contribute towards socio-economic development.

Also, the MD for VW South Africa, Martina Biene, in her remarks stated that VW was the first automotive company to be registered under the Ghana Automotive Development Programme (GADP), “and this new investment strengthens the brand’s presence in the country and the region.”

She explained that Ghana was an important market for the Sub-Saharan Africa expansion plans of VW in West Africa, hence the desire to develop a collaborative automotive industry hub amongst the countries in the region.

“The hub concept will ensure that each country with an automotive development policy or economic interest in the automotive industry has an important role to play in the supply value chain. We believe AfCFTA will be the catalyst which will unlock trade barriers and promote regional collaboration amongst the countries,” she said

Numerous tattooed prisoners transferred to a prison in El Salvador “won’t ever return”

A vast, brand-new prison in El Salvador has been used to house thousands of tattooed suspects of being part of gangs; there, they will ‘never return.

Since March of last year, more than 65,000 suspected gang members have been detained as a result of a government operation in the Central American nation.

That happened when gang violence erupted, killing more than 60 people on the nation’s worst day since the civil war thirty years ago, including market patrons, bus passengers, and street sellers.

To help the jail system, which is becoming increasingly overburdened, the 40,000-capacity Facility for the Confinement of Terrorists in Tecoluca, San Vicente, was constructed.

The first 2,000 inmates were sent there last month at a time when nearly 2% of the adult population of El Salvador is in jail.

A second group of 2,000 prisoners were moved today to the facility, where human rights group and lawmakers alike have said is 4,000 too many.

But El Salvador president Nayib Bukele boastfully shared photographs today of the lines upon lines of inmates sitting on the grey prison floor today.

‘This day, in a new operation, we moved the second batch of 2000 gangsters to the Terrorism Contention Centre (CECOT),’ he wrote on Facebook.

‘With this, there are now 4,000 gangsters inhabiting the world’s most criticised prison.’

Footage and photographs show thousands of barefoot men being led through the cavernous jail lined by guards in balaclavas.

They sit, seemingly endlessly, side-by-side in only white boxers. Their beds – stacked one on top of another – do not have mattresses.

‘This will be their new house, where they will live for decades, all mixed, unable to do any further harm to the population,’ Bukele, who campaigned on the promise of bringing law and order to El Salvador’s streets, said.

Minister for Justice and Peace Gustavo Villatoro added: ‘They are never going to return to the communities, the neighbourhoods, the barrios, the cities of our beloved El Salvador.’

Though, around 57,000 of those arrested are still awaiting formal charges or a trial. Only 3,500 people captured by the anti-crime dragnet have been released.

Villatoro added: ‘We are eliminating this cancer from society.’

The 2,000 men were transferred there as part of a security operation that started at dawn and involved 1,200 troops and three Air Force helicopters.

According to Public Works Minister Romeo Rodriguez, the Tecoluca prison is made of eight concrete buildings, each packed with 32 100sq m cells containing 80 bunk beds, two sinks and two toilets for between 100 inmates.

The mega-prison also has dining rooms, exercise facilities and table tennis courts inside – for the guards, at least.

The campus is 45 miles east of San Salvador, the country’s capital.

As it has done every month for nearly a year, El Salvador’s Congress today once again suspended some constitutional rights by extending its state of emergency.

The emergency decree loosens conditions for arrest, restricts free assembly and allows the government to listen in on citizens’ communications.

People no longer have to be told why they are being arrested, what rights they have or even be given access to a lawyer.

Bukele first requested emergency powers last March 27 after the explosion of gang activity.

The policy is widely popular among Salvadorans, with hatred for gang violence running deep in the country and killings now at an all-time low.

With an estimated 70,000 members in their ranks, gangs have controlled large swaths of the country for years, extorting and killing with impunity.

But human rights groups have grown increasingly concerned by the government’s heavy-handed treatment of detainees.

They say there have been many instances of prisoner abuse within the dilapidated and overcrowded prisons and even innocent people have been swept up in the raids.

A data leak obtained by Human Rights Watch in January found evidence of violations of due process, little to no hope of justice and even dozens of deaths in custody.

‘The use of these broadly defined crimes opens the door to arbitrary arrests of people with no relevant connection to gangs and does little to ensure justice for
violent gang abuses, such as killings and rape,’ the group said.

Ashaiman military brutalities: One victim confirmed dead

A lawyer representing some victims of the recent military brutualities in Ashaiman, Emmanuel Kumador has confirmed the death of one of his clients.

The victim identified as Alhaji Mohammed Musah was confirmed dead on Monday, March 14, 2023.

“The late Alhaji Mohammed Musah was one of the victims of the military brutalisation on March 7, 2023 within Ashaiman. He was sitting at the frontage of his house and when he saw the soldiers, the soldiers shouted and so he started running, he run to enter his house, when he entered his house, he fell.

“He is already a hypertension person, so his pressure shot up and was admitted at the hospital, we were just informed that three days ago he could not survive,” the lawyer told Joynews in an interview.

Some soldiers invaded Ashaiman in the early hours of Tuesday, March 7, 2023, apparently in search of the murderers of their young colleague, Sherrif Imoro, who was allegedly lynched on Saturday, March 4, 2023.

Several videos of the incident, captured by some residents, went viral on social media.

In some of these videos, personnel hit and brutalised residents who they came across in their search.

In the end, close to 200 residents were arrested by the military but were subsequently released after going through interrogation at Burma Camp where they are alleged to have suffered further brutalisation.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has arrested six suspects in connection with the murder of the young soldier.

The suspects who are facing trial have been remanded by an Ashaiman court.

If electrical fault caused Kejetia market fire then Jail Sam Pyne – Captain Smart

Host of Onua Maakye on Onua TV, Godsbrian Smart popularly known as Captain Smart, has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the Kumasi Mayor Samuel Pyne, following the outbreak of fire at the Kejetia Market in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi.

Captain Smart alleged that over a thousand traders share a single electricity metre at the market, which he believes may be the root of the fire outbreak according to an onuaonline.com report.

“The politics of the metering system led to power cuts at the market and for weeks the market women were selling without power and nobody did anything to the KMA boss. How can one meter serve over 1,000 stores?” he asked.

Speaking on his Onua Maakye show on March 16, 2023, he asserted that the Electricity Company of Ghana wanted to provide free metres for the market and spread the utility arrears for the traders but the decision was rejected by Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly due to politics.
“If the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) comes to tell us the Kumasi Kejetia market fire was caused by an electrical fault, Sam Pyne must go to jail. He should spend the rest of his entire life in jail.

“The ECG wanted to provide free metres for the market but the KMA boss said they have a contractor that would provide it at a fee of GH₵500, meanwhile, one metre was serving over 1,000 stores,” he added.

The Ghana National Fire Service confirmed the market fire after multiple news channels reported it on March 15, 2023.

GhanaWeb sources confirmed that the fire started at Kejetia Dubai, where car tyres are sold. The fire, according to reports started around 4:30 pm.

Personnel from the GNFS were quickly called to the scene to douse the inferno and rescue people from the parts of the building which has been gutted by the fire.

Personnel from the Ambulance Service and the Ghana Police Service were also at the scene to offer support to the victims of the inferno.

The injured were transported to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. Traders affected by the incident wailed while they tried to salvage as many items as they could.

Some affected traders who spoke to GhanaWeb’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent claimed that the escalation of the fire can be attributed to the inability of fire officers to douse the fire on time.

Meanwhile, the market has been shut down temporarily for an assessment of the extent of damage caused to the facility due to the fire outbreak.

Stephanie Benson cry’s over ‘false’ claims of having had liposuction

Musician Stephanie Benson cried on social media while addressing reports that she had undergone cosmetic surgery- liposuction, recently.

The singer said not only are the reports untrue, but they made light of the life-threatening surgery she had to go through to remove her gallbladder after she fell seriously ill, in June 2022.

In a video shared on Instagram, Stephanie Benson said “I don’t get upset easily, you can sensationalise whatever headline, call me names, I don’t care. But for that particular surgery, I went down to 53 kilos and got really small, my family were worried.”

She added that, “it wasn’t body enhancement surgery. For them to minimise my near death situation and made it look like I had liposuction which I never had, is so disheartening.”

Stephanie Benson captioned her video thus, “My sadness is not out of anger, it’s just my pain revisited after Jon showed distaste for some headline he read this evening. I share my happiness with you all the time, but today pls allow me to share my sadness with you before I go to bed. I’ll be back to normal in no time.”

  • Ghanaian men are too diplomatic, they should be straight forward – Women complain

Ghanaian men are too diplomatic, they should be straight forward – Women complain

Ghanaian men have been described to have a laissez-faire attitude towards certain situations. They seem to be very slow to action especially when they are needed the most.

A media practitioner Harriet Nartey, actor John Dumelo and an avid listener of Joy FM, Susan Adu Amankwah were on the Joy Super Morning Show on Friday to discuss the topic “What do Ghanaian men bring to the table” in a relationship?

Susan disclosed that Ghanaian men are not assertive. According to her, certain issues need to be dealt with directly and instantly yet Ghanaian men will pay little attention and keep them pending.

“Ghanaian men really can be laissez-faire, there are certain things you expect action, you expect a bit of assertiveness and then they relax and say oh let’s see how it goes and we will pick it easy, it will find its way,”

“It can be good at times, yes, but there are certain times that action must happen and the Ghanaian man is relaxed and you’re just confused,” she said.

Susan advised Ghanaian men to create a perfect balance between their diplomatic personality and also being assertive to create a smooth and comfortable environment.

“Every virtue when it gets to the extreme can become a vice,” she advised.

According to Madam Amankwah, this downside is almost only peculiar to Ghanaian men. She said she has encountered men from other countries who seem to be a bit more upfront and assertive than the typical Ghanaian.

On the other hand, the Ghanaian men in the studio came to their own defense to explain why they are slow to action and sometimes allow women to take charge.

Programme host Kojo Yankson agreed to the fact that Ghanaian men are slow to action, however, he explained that men do that because they are very calculated and cautious when handling issues because they always want to be accurate in giving solutions.

“I think Ghanaian men are slow to action generally because we are very deliberative, we want to deliberate and be as sure as possible before we take an action. We hate to be wrong or we hate to throw a resource in the wrong direction, so we want to get it right”, Mr. Yankson said.

Co-host Winston Amoah also said men mostly allow women to take charge for their own peace of mind.

“If you want your peace of mind, the woman is always right, when it gets difficult the men step in and get it done but until then, he wants to sit back and watch you do all the things. And it’s nice when the women are in charge, it’s so peaceful,” he said.

Harriet joined in to advise that going forward, she expects Ghanaian men to listen more and pay attention to detail.

“Hopefully in the future, we want to see the Ghanaian man not being diplomatic with everything because they have to portray niceness, gentility and loving,”

“We want to see the Ghanaian man listening more, quick to action, trusting the fact that whoever is offering them help is coming from a genuine place, do not think that it is being weaponized against you or there is a motive behind that,” Harriet counselled.

Five Iranian girls arrested for making a dance video with Rema’s song

Five young Iranian ladies who danced to Nigerian Afrobeat singer and rapper, Divine Ikubor, professionally known as Rema’s song ‘Calm Down’ have been allegedly arrested.

The video of the five girls went viral on Tuesday for dancing to Rema’s hit song without headscarves.

The Times of Israel reported that there are anxieties about their well-being for filming themselves dancing as they were arrested and forced into confessing by Iran’s authorities.

The footage showed the women dancing and slightly showing their stomachs, near highrise buildings in the Tehran residential district of Ekbatan to the song.

It spread widely on TikTok and other social media channels last week around International Women’s Day on March 8.

Activists, apparently from the Ekbatan area, first posted the video on Telegram and Twitter. They said authorities had been asking residents in the area if they knew the women, based on the footage, The Times of Israel said.

On Tuesday, the activists alleged the women had been detained and forced into making a video in which they expressed regret.

In the Islamic Republic, it is illegal for women to dance in public as well as to not wear the Islamic headscarf.

Abolition of the obligatory headscarf rule has been one of the chief demands of the civil unrest that erupted in September after the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, who had been arrested for allegedly violating the dress code.

This video of Iranian girls in Tehran’s Ekbatan neighbourhood dancing unveiled to the song Calm Down by Rema and Selena Gomez has gone viral.

After the initial viral footage of the five, another video emerged on social media of four women, their heads fully covered, stepping forward one by one to express regret.

It appeared to have been filmed in a similar Ekbatan area, but neither the video nor the circumstances in which it was made could be verified.

Whether the women had been released was also not immediately clear.

Ekbatan, a middle-income area popular with young professionals and families, saw repeated anti-regime actions in the past few months.

Rema retweeted the video of the women dancing with their long hair uncovered and commented: “To all the beautiful women who are fighting for a better world, I’m inspired by you, I sing for you and I dream with you.”

The song “Calm Down” became a global hit after Rema issued a remix with superstar Selena Gomez.

The 22-year-old soldier with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) band in Sunyani in the Bono Region was stabbed to death by unknown attackers.

The soldier was said to be returning from his girlfriend’s house in Ashaiman-Taifa and heading toward his residence when the unfortunate incident occurred.

He has since been buried with persons believed to be his killers arrested.

The mother of the officer whose death triggered military brutalities in Ashaiman says she is devastated by the death of her son.

Afia Kyerah says she had no idea her son was visiting Ashaiman after taking a sick leave from his base in Sunyani in the Bono Region.

The death of Sherrif Imoro sparked the serious brutalization of residents of Ashaiman by the military on Tuesday, March 7.

Speaking to journalists, Afia Kyerah said justice should be served.

“Sherrif didn’t have any friends, he was always with me, some neighbours were always teasing me for turning him into a mummy’s boy. I had no idea he was coming to Ashaiman, I had no idea he will die like this, his death is so painful, I’m sad and devastated,” the mother said.

  • Since 1999 to date: List of all the undercover investigative works done by Anas

Since 1999 to date: List of all the undercover investigative works done by Anas

Award-winning investigative Journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has been in the news lately after losing a GHC25 million defamation suit he took against Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

An Accra High Court on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, struck out the defamation suit brought by the journalist against the lawmaker, Kennedy Agyapong.

The judge in delivering his ruling described Anas’ job as an investigative terrorist instead of an investigative journalist.

“He has been totally disgraced. He once portrayed himself as an angel, but today I’m not even sure he is at the devil’s level yet.” the Judge said

Here is a full list of all of the works he has undertaken in his career, made available via wikipedia:

The Burger Story (1999): This was the first undercover investigation by Anas. He worked as a street hawker to expose police officers who took bribes from unlicensed traders on a major highway in Accra.

Torture on the High Seas (2003): Anas went undercover aboard a shipping vessel from Afko fisheries to expose the maltreatment of Ghanaian workers by a Korean employer.

Bole Rebel Raid (2005): An investigative story which exposed how Ivorian rebels invaded Ghanaian territories in 2005, made incursions into some northern communities, and subjected the inhabitants to constant torture and abuse.

In this story Anas went undercover in the villages of Saru and Walata. Ivorian rebels had invaded and captured the chief of Saru and some of his elders. As part of the investigation, Anas went as the ‘Prince of Walata’ and managed to meet the rebel leader, receiving information about the rebels’ camp and operations.

After the story was reported, the government of John Kufuor took steps to address the lack of security in the affected communities. The chief and elders were released, security for the affected Ghanaian communities was provided by the government, and the borders were secured.

Passport Scandal (2006): Posing as a rich businessman, Anas worked to expose officials within Ghana’s passport office who provided Ghanaian passports to non-citizens for a fee. He made hundreds of passports using fake identities. Passports were made in the name of the then President, the Inspector General of Police and other high political and national characters to prove the system was corrupt. This led to the fast-track introduction of biometric passport for Ghanaians.

Torture Chamber of Bangkok Prisons (2006): An Anas undercover investigation where he travelled to Thailand to infiltrate its prisons as a Catholic priest. He interviewed some Ghanaian and West African prisoners about the maltreatment and deaths of foreign prisoners in jail, exposing the abuse of expatriates in Thai prisons.

As a result of Anas’ work, the government of Ghana successfully negotiated with the Thai government for the transfer of all convicted Ghanaian prisoners in Thailand to Ghana.

Eurofood Scandal (2006): An investigation by Anas in which he went undercover as menial worker at Eurofood, a biscuit and confectionery factory in Ghana. Eurofood was using expired and maggot-infested flour to produce biscuits for public consumption in Ghana and other parts of Africa.

Soja Bar Prostitution (2007): An investigation into one of the largest brothels in Ghana at the time. Anas went undercover by posing as a cleaner. He exposed how some teenagers were forced into prostitution.

He also exposed Soja Bar as a place for hardened criminals and the exploitation of women. Soja Bar was later demolished by Ghanaian authorities and some of the under-aged prostitutes were taken in by Ghana’s Social Welfare.

Imam’s School of Shock (2008): This is a story of a slave master who trafficked and abused 15 children in Ghana and Togo using an Islamic school as bait. He recruited young victims into a life of begging, using their efforts to amass significant wealth. Anas gathered evidence through the use of a hidden camera, which led to the arrest of the slave master.

Humans for Sale: Dons Exposed (2008): This was an investigation Anas carried out over an eight-month period. It spanned over five countries in West Africa and Europe. He worked to penetrate an international trafficking ring, gathered evidence to prosecute a political figure, rescued 17 girls about to be trafficked, exposed corrupt immigration officials, and stood as a witness in the trial.

Orphans Home of Hell (2010): Undercover in Ghana’s biggest state run orphanage. Exposed corruption and abuse of children in the facility.

In the Interest of the State (2010): Exposed cocoa smugglers and their cohorts in Ghana’s security system.

Inside Ghana’s Madhouse (2010): Undercover in Ghana’s biggest psychiatric hospital Anas exposed patient human rights abuses.

Four films in 2011 for Al Jazeera Africa Investigations in Sierra Leone (Timber); Ghana’s Gold; Fools’ Gold; and Spell of the Albino (Tanzania).

Enemies of the Nation (2011): Undercover to expose fraud and corruption at one of Ghana’s key points of entry, the Tema harbor.

Wild Ghana Project (2012): A look at how gullible and vulnerable customers can be exploited, featuring the “Abortion Lord” who had sex with his female clients when they came to him for abortions.

Deadly Gold (2012): An investigation into the negative effects of illegal gold mining in Ghana.

Dons of the Forest (2012): A follow-up to “In The Interest of The State” operation to busted a ring of people who diverted and sold fertilizers meant for the cocoa farmer.

The Prez’s Assignment – Stealing the People’s Power (2012: A three-phase investigation into the power distribution sector in Ghana. Exposed acts of corruption on the part of employees of power distribution company ECG (electricity company of Ghana) and indebtedness on the part of individuals and companies.

The Messiah of Mentukwa (2013): The story of how one woman, Helen Jesus Christ, set up a church in a remote village in Ghana’s hinterland and convinced members that Jesus Christ was coming soon and they could only be saved if they cut themselves off the rest of the world. With that came physical abuse and children being denied access to school.

Al Jazeera – People and Power, How to Robe Africa (2013): This was a film on how African businesses fleece their governments and stash these stolen funds in off-shore accounts. With journalist Stanley Kwenda.

Spirit Child (2013): Filmed in Northern Ghana, where Anas exposed the barbaric sacrifices of children who were believed to bring ill luck to their families. The story led to the arrest of some fetish priests, with Anas advocating for the prosecution of such persons.

Al Jazeera Africa Investigates – Nigeria’s Fake Doctors (2014): Anas teamed up with colleague Rosemary Nwaebuni to investigate the activities of quack doctors who risk the lives of vulnerable people in Nigeria. The film led to the arrest of two people who were using pharmacy shops and beer parlours as operating theaters for patients who were in desperate need of medical attention. It presents bogus doctors with no medical qualifications and little knowledge providing illegal abortions and the resultant fatal injuries.

Ghana Food for Thought (2014): Focuses on stealing and corruption in the process of supplying donated food to its intended recipients. Anas went undercover to expose the activities of some Ghana Health Service officers who ran a corrupt business selling food donated by the World Food Program (WFP) and destined free-of-charge to disadvantaged children in the north. Three people were arrested.

Ghana Sex Mafia (2014): Film built on the Chinese Sex Mafia story of February 2009. Tells the story of Chinese girls trafficked into Ghana and how Anas went undercover to bust the ring and testified in court leading to the prosecution of the traffickers.

Ghana’s Soul Takers (2014): This was a three part investigative documentary that was centered on road safety. The first part looked at driver licensing and the corruption and fraud it is fraught with.

The second installment, Doom – the silent killer next door, tells three social interest stories of how families lost loved ones to the carnage on Ghana’s roads, and highlighted some of the dangers associated with commercial transport.

The third part examines police corruption and the tacit contribution of Ghana’s traffic police (the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, MTTD) of the Police Service.

Ghana Judiciary Scandal (2015): On 23 September 2015 Anas premiered, in four showings, in front of a record-breaking audience of more than 6500 people at the Accra International Conference Center, his undercover film “Ghana In The Eyes Of God”. It exposed widespread corruption within the judiciary and graphically showed court workers like clerks and bailiffs connive with a number of respected judges to influence court cases through bribes. 34 judges and magistrates were caught on a hidden camera receiving enticements of money, goats, sheep and even foodstuff. As a result, presumed robbers, murderers, drug traffickers, rapists and litigants in land cases went free. The film effectively created a deep and destabilizing crises of conscience in Ghanaian society.

A disciplinary committee of the Judicial Council was set up to probing the allegations of bribery and extortion against the thirty-four judges and magistrates. At one point it had to have suspended its sittings following a suit by 14 Circuit Court judges at the Fast Track High Court challenging the legality or otherwise of the procedure adopted by the committee to investigate the matter.

More than 100 members of staff of the Judicial Service were then investigated after Anas submitted a petition and videos showing the affected staff receiving bribes to compromise cases. Anas has asked for the dismissal of the affected persons and as a result, the Judicial Council has begun investigations into the matter once again. The affected judges have since been suspended. Anas was given protection from prosecution but the situation remains tense. The effect of his documentary film was heightened by a number of pop songs, cartoons and other public shows of support.

On 7 December, The Council unanimously decided to remove from office 20 out of the 21 Judges and Magistrates cited in the petition. Some were removed from office without benefits and others with benefits. Those removed with benefits were remorseful when they appeared before the Committee and apologized profusely to the people of Ghana and the Judiciary for bringing the name of the institution into disrepute by their conduct. The Council, where Anas is personally presenting the evidence, resumed sitting mid-January 2016 to continue probing into the rest of the cases.

Nigeria’s Baby Farmers (2015): In this episode of Africa Investigates, journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas and investigative reporter Rosemary Nwaebuni went undercover to identify and expose some of those behind Nigeria’s baby trade. The trade exploits couples desperate for a baby and young pregnant single mothers — often stigmatised in a country where abortion is illegal except in the most dire medical emergency. It is also a trade that international NGOs have identified as sinister and out of control.

The team found bogus doctors and clinics offering spurious fertility treatments in return for large amounts of money. In their guise as a childless couple, Anas and Rosemary were falsely diagnosed by one clinician as being unable to conceive children.

Number 12 (2018): This investigative work by Anas focuses on corruption in the Ghana Football Association (GFA). Portions of the investigative piece were shown privately to President Nana Akufo-Addo. In the video, Kwesi Nyantakyi – the President of the GFA – is filmed appearing to be soliciting for bribes from some football investors using the name of the President, Vice President and other senior members in Government. The President lodged a complaint about the conduct of Nyantakyi with the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service. He was arrested and later granted bail.

After being provisionally banned by FIFA, Nyantakyi resigned as the president of Ghana Football Association, and quit his roles as a member of the FIFA Council, member of the FIFA Associations Committee, First Vice President of CAF and President of Zone B of the West African Football Union (WAFU).

The Ghana Football Association was also dissolved.

Torture Home (2019): “Torture Home, when a man of god abuses children” is an investigation an Echoing Hill village orphanage run by Baptist Pastor Lawrence Lamina. It uncovers widespread child abuse, neglect and thievery of food donation at the hand of the pastor and his “caretakers.”

Man “tried to stab woman outside a recreation center as he assumed she was a spy”

A woman and her friend were attacked outside of a fitness center by a man who believed they were spies, according to evidence presented in court.

The incident in Cheltenham last Thursday has led to the attempted murder charge against 29-year-old Joshua Bowles.

After a brief appearance at London Magistrates’ Court this morning, Bowles, of Welwyn Mews, Cheltenham, was not asked to enter a plea.

Bowles – dressed in a prison-issue grey tracksuit – confirmed his name, age and address.

Kathryn Selby, prosecuting, said: ‘This was a serious incident of attempted murder, this was a planned attack. The defendant has researched the victim and her whereabouts believing her to work for GCHQ.

‘He has then travelled to the leisure centre taking with him two knives.

‘He saw his victim enter the centre and waited outside. When she came outside with a friend he has gone up to her and attacked her with a knife.

‘We believe he selected the victim because she is a worker for GCHQ and he holds views on the work he believes they conduct there.

‘He attacked her because in his mind she represents the state.’

The court heard the woman – who was not named and referred to only by the code number 99230 – was leaving the leisure centre with a friend when she was attacked.

Mr Bowles researched his victim and her whereabouts ‘believing her to work for GCHQ’, Britain’s signals intelligence and cyber security agency, it was heard.

The woman suffered wounds to her abdomen, liver, leg, and chest, and was rushed to hospital for treatment in intensive care.

According to the charges, it is said Bowles ‘attempted to murder 99230’, and he faces a second allegation of assaulting Alex Fuentes ‘occasioning him actual bodily harm’ according to the Evening Standard.

District Judge Nina Tempia remanded Bowles into custody until a hearing at the Old Bailey on March 31.

The court heard the case will be dealt with under the criminal justice terrorism protocol.

Mr Bowles is also charged with actual bodily harm after allegedly punching a man who tried to intervene.

Ohio man sentenced to 20 years in jail for pretending to be a prince from Ghana

In order to defraud more than a dozen victims out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, an Ohio man pretended to be a Ghanaian royal and was sentenced to 20 years in jail on Wednesday.

According to the evidence presented at his trial, Daryl Robert Harrison, also known as Prince Daryl R. Attipoe and Prophet Daryl R. Attipoe, defrauded at least 14 people out of more than $800,000.

In September, Harrison was found guilty of mail and wire fraud, conspiring to commit mail and wire fraud, and interfering with witnesses.

For several years, Harrison stole money from people who believed they were investing in African mining and trucking companies, prosecutors said. Harrison falsely claimed that he was a prince from Ghana and had connections to those companies, according to the Justice Department.

Several of Harrison’s victims were congregants of the Power House of Prayer Ministries, where Harrison and his stepfather claimed they were ministers. According to prosecutors, Harrison and his stepfather used the investment money for personal expenses, including renting a house in Colorado and purchasing luxury cars.

District Judge Michael J. Newman gave Harrison the maximum sentence allowed under the law – 20 years behind bars – more than the 14-year sentence prosecutors had asked for.

“Each of the Defendant’s fraud crimes were committed in a cold, calculated and premeditated fashion,” prosecutors wrote in court filings, describing Harrison as an “extremely selfcentered, self-possessed sociopath who has no respect for societal rules or norms, and further lacks any empathy or sympathy for his victims” that “intimidated and threatened his victims to establish and maintain control over them.”

Harrison had asked the judge for a much lower sentence, highlighting supportive letters written by parishioners and family members. Harrison’s defense attorney also noted that his wife, who is taking care of their six children, is battling stage IV cancer.

Harrison’s stepfather, Robert Shelly Harrison, Jr., pleaded guilty to one felony charge in December. He will be sentenced later this month.

  • It was my first time at the Oscars-Tems

It was my first time at the Oscars-Tems

Nigerian singer and songwriter Tems has explained why she wore what has been described by some critics as a ‘view-blocking’ white gown to the 2023 Academy Awards (Oscars) held on Sunday, March 12.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, Tems said that she wanted to “go all out” and put in a great effort into looking the best for her first Academy Awards experience.

The Grammy winner stated that wearing the Lever Couture gown was her way of making a statement and celebrating her work.

“Two years ago, I would’ve said no to this dress,” she said. “But it’s my first Oscars — I am going to go all out. I really wanted to make the most of the day. The dress is also my way of celebrating my work and the people around me, celebrating my country, and celebrating the people that are rooting for me. This dress says ‘Yes, yes, I am here!’”

Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, added that the global attention she’s receiving including landing an Oscar nomination only proves to her the efforts she is making are paying off.

“If the biggest women in the world love my work to such an extent that they are working with me, then that must say something. My work is actually reaching places, it’s making some type of impact.”

“And that is insane! I really am just trying to keep my feet on the ground and continue running and doing things that are a hundred per cent authentic to me. Evolving, learning, growing. It’s just the beginning for me,” the ‘Higher’ hitmaker said.

Tems caused quite a stir with her gown at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday.

The co-writer of Rihanna’s Oscar-nominated single, “Lift Me Up,” wowed the red carpet in a show-stopping Lever Couture gown with a delicate tulle fabric headpiece woven into a head-to-toe asymmetrical silhouette.

The Oscar nominee’s outfit was an instant entry for the night’s best-dressed list. However, during the ceremony, social media users were widely divided when it came to the headpiece’s presence inside the venue, where it obstructed the views of some of the guests seated behind her.

Although no one who was actually seated behind Tems said anything about their blocked view, ABC’s broadcast showed her several times throughout the night.

Those seated around her, including her co-manager, Tec, were seen craning their necks to see around the gown’s headpiece.

But on Monday, Tems responded to the drama on Twitter. She shared four photos of her in the now-infamous gown, and cheekily writing, “Oops.”

Tems was nominated for Best Original Song at this year’s Oscars for the movie’s soundtrack, ‘Lift Me Up’ which she co-wrote with superstar singer Rihanna; music producer, Ludwig Göransson; and Black Panther’s director, Ryan Coogler.

Kaala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj’s ‘Naatu Naatu’, however, won the category.

  • Education Minister announces construction of STEM Academy

Education Minister announces construction of STEM Academy

Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has announced the construction of Accra Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Academy to focus on STEM education from kindergarten to the senior high school level.

The project, which is expected to be completed in December, will admit students by January 2024, and the expectation is that students of the Academy would have a different experience of education.

The Minister also spoke about the establishment of model STEM Junior High Schools indicating that the first one is under construction at Asem in Kumasi with funding from the Arab Development Bank.

Again, plans are underway to build similar schools at Bantama, Juaben and Onwe also in Kumasi, adding that, all the schools would be equipped with physics, chemistry and biology laboratories, computer labs and well-equipped libraries.

Giving further insight on the progress made in the implementation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, STEM, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training, TVET, in Kumasi, Dr. Adutwum explained that the new STEM JHS concept would promote efficiency and cut costs if scaled up across the country and argued that with the introduction of the model, STEM schools pupils in other local schools could be absorbed, hence allowances paid to the school heads could be saved.

He said there are about 13, 000 JHS across the country and the number can be reduced to about 3, 500 nationwide if the model STEM schools concept is successfully implemented.

Dr. Adutwum promised to pursue that policy by seeking Cabinet’s approval to inject efficiency and innovation into Ghana’s educational system.

  • The woman’s family reveals why she lied about being raped

The woman’s family reveals why she lied about being raped

A woman’s mother said her daughter “was just trying to get people to listen to her” when she claimed falsely to have been groomed and raped.

Eleanor Williams, 22, was sentenced to prison for making up the story that she had been targeted by an Asian grooming ring.

She detailed how the men battered, abused, and trafficked her in a Facebook post from May 2020 that received over 100,000 shares.

Williams also shared photos of her wounds, but a court heard that she had used a hammer to inflict them on herself.

She was jailed for eight-and-a-half years after appearing at court yesterday.

Williams’ mother, Allison, spoke to Sky News about the moment her daughter’s verdict came in.

She told the broadcaster: ‘I can’t describe it. I still can’t take it in really. It just doesn’t feel real. The person the press are portraying is not the person I know.’

Allison said she accepts her daughter did tell lies but added: ‘I believe she was just trying to get people to listen to her.’

Eleanor Williams’ sister doesn’t accept she self-inflicted her injuries

Williams’ sister, Lucy, also spoke out about the ordeal.

While she, like her mother, admits the 22-year-old lied about the men who were forced to defend the false claims in court, she does think others were responsible.

Lucy claims Williams received ‘constant’ and ‘very weird’ phone messages as well as threatening Snapchats.

She admitted that her sister did not get auctioned during a trip to Amsterdam, as was claimed, as they shared a room and nothing was out the ordinary.

    Eleanor Williams

But they did have other experiences, Lucy claims.

She told Sky News: ‘One of the men was harassing Ellie at the bar and some of our friends had seen it and they’d warned him off. And there was a takeaway around the corner from the nightclub, and Ellie was coming home that night with me.

‘He grabbed her outside of the takeaway and started pulling her arm, saying: “Come on, we’re going.”

‘And she was like: “No, I’m going with my sister”, and his face, he was so angry with her. She did come home with me, and then the next weekend she came back black and blue, worse than we’ve ever seen.”

Lucy added it was her that urged Williams to go to the police after seeing the extent of her injuries.

In sentencing remarks which were broadcast on television, Honorary Recorder of Preston Judge Robert Altham said: ‘It is troubling to say the least that she shows no significant signs of remorse.’

He said there is no explanation for why the defendant made the allegations, which he described as ‘complete fiction’.

He added: ‘Unless and until the defendant chooses to say why she has told these lies we will not know.’

Williams looked straight ahead and thanked the judge after he sentenced her.

In statements read to the court on Monday, three of the men Williams had accused described attempts to take their own life following her allegations.

Mohammed Ramzan, a business owner who Williams alleged trafficked her, told the court: ‘I have had countless death threats made over social media from people all over the world because of what they thought I was involved in.’

Williams claimed Mr Ramzan, 43, had groomed her from the age of 12, put her to work in brothels in Amsterdam, and sold her at an auction there.

But the court heard that, at the time she was in the Netherlands, his bank card was being used at a B&Q in Barrow.

Williams also gave police an account of being taken to Blackpool, where she said Mr Ramzan threatened her and she was taken to different addresses and forced to have sex with men.

When police made inquiries, they found she had travelled to the seaside resort alone and stayed in a hotel, where she bought a Pot Noodle from a nearby shop and then remained in her room watching YouTube on her phone.

Speaking outside court following the hearing, Mr Ramzan said: ‘There’s no winners here today, I feel no sense of triumph, only sadness.

‘I’m not sure how the family and I are going to recover from this. Mud sticks and I fear it may take some time.’

Jordan Trengove, who spent time in custody after being falsely accused of rape by Williams, told reporters he planned to take action against the police.

He said he does not believe Williams has shown any remorse and added: ‘I don’t think the sentence is long enough, in my opinion, for what she’s done to us all.’

Superintendent Matthew Pearman, of Cumbria Police, said Williams’ allegations led to ‘public displays of mass anger’ in Barrow, with protests held outside the police station and on a retail park.

Videos of English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson in the town were shown in court.

In a letter read to the court, Williams said she had not instigated anything which happened in the community and did not want Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, to come to the town.

She said: ‘I do not agree with his views or opinions.’

In the letter to the judge, she said: ‘I’m not saying I’m guilty but I know I have done wrong on some of this and I’m sorry.

‘I’m devastated at the trouble that has been caused in Barrow. If I knew what consequences would have come from that status I never would have posted it.’

Louise Blackwell KC, defending Williams, said her client maintained the allegations were true.

She added: ‘Other than her personal vulnerabilities and her age there doesn’t appear to be any motivation at all.’

Speaking after the sentencing, Mr Pearman said: ‘My biggest concern throughout this period has been that these false allegations would discourage genuine victims of abuse from coming forward to ourselves and our partners.

‘It is important to note that Williams’ allegations could not have been taken any more seriously when she initially came forward.

‘A large-scale investigation was launched and those she made allegations against were arrested and interviewed.

‘This has been a lengthy, complex and ultimately tragic case, as well as a dark period for Barrow. I hope that the full story, now it is in the public domain, will demonstrate that the police take allegations of sexual and physical abuse extremely seriously and will investigate thoroughly.

‘I urge anyone who has been the victim of sexual or physical abuse to report it today. You will be listened to and supported.’

Ghana unlikely to meet SDG on health by 2030 – WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO), has revealed that Ghana is among 55 countries in the world losing its health workers due to international migration.

A WHO Health Workforce Support and Safeguards List 2023 also identified 36 African countries including Nigeria as vulnerable to the availability of health workers required to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goal Target for Universal Health Coverage by 2030.

The Director Responsible for Health Worker Policy at WHO, Jim Campbell, said the health worker shortages is a threat to the chances of achieving Universal Health Care by 2030.

The WHO further scrutinised the actions of the developed countries who constantly engage in recruitment. It insisted that the ‘suffering’ countries require priority support for health workforce development and health system strengthening, along with additional safeguards which will limit active international recruitment.

Retrenched COCOBOD workers picket Parliament over outstanding benefits

Aggrieved former workers of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) have petitioned Parliament over their unpaid salaries.

The group calling itself the 1993/1994 retrenched Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) Officers Association on Wednesday, March 15, picketed at the entrance of Parliament to petition the Speaker over what the members of the group say is the underpayment of their benefits by COCOBOD.

The group bemoans that members were laid off in the years 1993 and 1994 without due diligence by COCOBOD.

However, following legal action against the dismissal, the court directed COCOBOD to pay the required benefits to the former workers.

Speaking to journalists, the spokesperson of the group, William Boafo said the funds paid by COCOBOD do not correspond to their entitlements hence the need for the Speaker of Parliament and the Office of the Special Prosecutor to probe the matter.

“We were at various departments, and various divisions working in various areas throughout the country and we were laid off in 1993 and some in 1994.  It became a court issue and in 2019 the court gave a ruling that Cocobod should pay us our benefits but in 2020 COCOBOD started issuing cheques to us, and it was nothing to write home about.”

Mr Boafo added that some of the former workers received as low as GH¢400 which was woefully inadequate. He added that several pleas and meeting with officials of COCOBOD to rectify the anomaly has proved futile.

He revealed that over 14, 000 workers were affected by the retrenchment by COCOBOD.

Justice Emile Short launches book “In the Eyes of the Storm”

A former Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Justice Emile Francis Short, has finally come up with a book entitled, “In the Eyes of the Storm.”

According to him, the purpose for which he sat down to write about himself, especially at age 70 was not for an attractive proposition but for the benefit of the youth and public officers.

Speaking in an interview with Thelma Tackie on GTV’s Breakfast Show on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, the first Commissioner of CHRAJ explained further that his main object in writing the book is to inspire public officials to discharge their functions “without fear or favour, ill will, or affection”.

He insisted that the book also seeks to encourage the Ghanaian youth to pursue hard work and do the right thing at all times.

Justice Emile Short hopes that his book will discourage the youth from engaging in unethical practices like 419, Sakawa, Satanism, or occult practices to get rich quickly.

“Honesty does pay in the long run. The idea of sitting down to write about myself, especially at age 70, was not an attractive proposition. However, I received encouragement from a number of persons who impressed upon me the need to describe how I navigated the journey as Ghana’s first Commissioner for the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice and the challenges I encountered. My faith in Christ and how it has shaped my career are well articulated in the book,” he reiterated.

“In the eyes of the storm” recounts the upbringing of an astute lawyer and a public servant, as well as narrating the role his father played in inculcating in him the values of honesty, integrity, and hard work.

The book also describes Justice Emile Short’s life from secondary school through University and the twists and turns of my career.

BBC harasses Claudia Lawrence over TV license charges

14 years after Claudia Lawrence vanished, her mother claims the BBC is still harassing her for her TV license payment and threatening legal action.

After she failed to show up for work in March 2009, Ms. Lawrence, a chef at the University of York, has vanished.

Despite the fact that no body has ever been discovered, detectives suspect she was murdered.

Yet despite her well-publicised disappearance, Claudia’s heartbroken mother Joan, 79, has revealed how letters are still being sent to her cottage several times a year demanding her daughter pay her licence fee.

EMBARGOED TO 0001 MONDAY FEBRUARY 15 File photo dated 14/4/2009 of Peter Lawrence with a 'Filpot' table-top box displaying images of his missing daughter. Speaking to the Sun, she says the demands have caused her ‘untold heartache’ and has called on the police to stop the BBC from sending the letters.

Joan continues to maintain her daughter’s former home by herself after her ex-husband Peter died aged 74 in 2021.

She drives there from Malton, North Yorkshire, every two weeks.

‘There was a letter recently, threatening a £1,000 fine if the licence wasn’t paid. It’s unbelievable,’ she said.

‘I’ve written to them to tell them what’s happened, and the police are supposed to be sorting it out, but the letters still come.’

The continued harassment comes despite her daughter’s disappearance, and a public appeal from Joan, having featured on the BBC’s Crimewatch programme.

She added: ‘You’d think they’d know by now, after all the publicity, wouldn’t you?

Despite her much-publicised disappearance, letters from the BBC demanding she pay her TV Licence are still being sent to her home (Picture: PA)

‘They must have sent two or three letters a year in all the time this has been happening. One was nasty and horrible. It threatened that not paying could affect her credit score.

‘I’m not someone who has ever had any debts, I pay for things straight away, so it was an awful thing to read. It really must stop.’

More than 52,000 people were fined following TV licence prosecutions in the latest figures from 2020- An estimated 76 percent of which were women.

In January, BBC chairman Richard Sharp criticised the £159-a-year licence fee as a regressive tax which penalised women, pensioners and the poor.

He said: ‘In some ways it’s considered anachronistic because there are other countries that adopt other mechanisms.

‘And there are a number of issues in terms of how we collect the licence fee from pensioners and also issues arising from people’s failure to pay the licence for example, with respect to gender issues, so it is imperfect.’

The initial police probe into Claudia’s disappearance was widely criticised for focusing on her love life and the Nag’s Head pub in York where she worked as a chef, which was just four doors away from her home.

Five men were arrested on suspicion of murder, but nobody has ever been charged.

Detectives blamed a lack of CCTV, data and forensic evidence for their failure to solve the case.

A renewed effort to find her body took place in 2021 and saw teams of police experts, search dogs, divers and forensic archaeologists spend two weeks scouring a lake and nearby woods for potential spots where her body could have been left.

However, they failed to make a breakthrough and the search was eventually called off.

In a public appeal last year, Joan said she is continuing to try and solve the mystery for herself and is reviewing what happened ‘with a fine-toothed comb’ for ‘simple things that have been missed’.

A BBC spokesman said the letters should have stopped once Claudia’s mother contacted them about the issue in 2022, but instead only a temporary pause was put in place and the automated letters restarted in February this year.

‘We’re very sorry for the distress caused to Mrs Lawrence and we will be apologising to her directly,’ the spokesperson told Metro.

‘We have taken steps to ensure no further letter are sent to the address.’

United States promises to support African capacity-building initiatives

The United States has decided that it will continue to partner with civil society, law enforcement, and judicial systems to support bilateral and regional capacity-building initiatives to counter threats of terrorism and violent extremism in Africa.

According to the US Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia E. Palmer, tackling the root causes of conflict, economic issues, inter and intra-communal schisms and weak institutions remained critical in securing the continent.

Speaking in Sogakope in the Volta Region last Tuesday, where the last leg of Operation Flintlock, the US-Africa Command’s special operations exercise was held,  Ms Palmer said improved security conditions could go to create the stability required to attract foreign investment and encourage economic growth.

“Through Flintlock and decades of military-to-military cooperation, we’ve demonstrated that our bilateral relationship is strong, productive and mutually beneficial,” she said.

The approach, she said, was to bring to bear the US government’s diplomatic, development and security tools, in collaboration with its partners, for a more peaceful and prosperous region.

The joint exercise, hosted by Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire over the past two weeks, had 1,400 personnel drawn from the Navies of Ghana, Cape Verde, Nigeria, Morocco and Cote d’Ivoire being trained.

Flintlock is the largest multinational training exercise, with a new purpose to address the critical themes of counter-terrorism, counter-illicit trafficking, collective security and partnership among the US, Europe, the United Kingdom and Africa.

Spanning five sites, it conducts command-post exercises and field training exercises, with maritime crime detection and rescue exercises being the new additions to the training series under the programme.

During the exercise, the team staged a simulation, during which it rescued a supposed hostage from terrorists.

    Human Rights

Ms Palmer pointed out that improving governance and respect for human rights, promoting the rule of law and accountability and providing services and economic opportunities for populations were all imperatives to security.

“We know security concerns cannot be fully addressed through military force, and our expectations are that the rights of people will be upheld,” she said.

Ghana, she said, had taken a very holistic approach, having security interventions layered down to human rights training for the police and the armed forces.

That, she said, saw the US Agency for International Development (USAID) supporting the government’s effort to improve inclusive economic growth and social cohesion, particularly in the northern part of the country, committing $140 million a year into health, water and sanitation and educational programmes to help address the vulnerability in that part of the country.

    Building trust

She said during the Flintlock exercise, the partners, had worked together to build trust between at-risk communities through medical outreach events.

Mobile clinics, she said, were established in the Northern and the Volta regions, where some residents were provided with medical screening and basic health care.

“It’s this kind of work that builds trust and connection and can improve security,” Ms Palmer said.

She applauded President Akufo-Addo’s efforts to expand the work of the Accra Initiative, the regional approach needed for Coastal West Africa and the Sahel, keeping in mind that the complex problems in the region required African-led and sourced solutions.

    US Africa

In his remarks, the Commander of the US Special Operations Command Africa, Rear Admiral Jamie Sands, said he was delighted at the effort the participating forces put into the training programme.

“By the cooperation and networks built through this exercise, we are coming together to set the groundwork to solve the security challenges that pose threats across the region,” he said.

Being the first Flintlock since 2020 and the COVID-19, the coordination and planning, he noted, had grown the exercise in many ways and commended the partners for participating in the training.

    Ghana

In his remarks, the Commandant of the Ghana Armed Forces and Staff College, Major General Irvine Nii Ayitey Aryeetey, said Ghana recognised the importance of the exercise in promoting interoperability and mutual understanding among the participating nations.

“This exercise is a testament to the importance of collaboration among nations in the face of the global security challenge,” he said.

Russian plane spills fuel near downed US drone – Pentagon

Declassified video of the Tuesday drone crash involving a Russian fighter has been made public by the Pentagon.

A Russian military jet is seen in the footage dropping fuel near the drone as it flies overhead.

The drone’s damaged propeller is briefly visible in the intercept’s aftermath photo.

The declassified film, which lasts for roughly 40 seconds, was trimmed by the US military for length but still presents the events in chronological order, according to the Pentagon.

A Russian fighter jet Tuesday, Marc 14, 2023, struck the propeller of a U.S. MQ-9 drone surveillance drone over the Black Sea, causing American forces to bring down the unmanned aerial vehicle in international waters, the U.S. military said, an incident that highlighted soaring U.S.-Russian tensions over Moscow's war in Ukraine. (AP Photo/Massoud Hossaini, File)
The US ‘Reaper’ drone is believed to have been downed somewhere off the coast of Crimea (Picture: AP)

Only a small exerpt of the encounter has been released by the US, which does not show events before or afterwards.

The move was the first time an American aircraft had been brought down by a Russian warplane since the height of the Cold War, and sparked fears of an escalation between the two powers.

Russia has denied U.S. accusations that its jets acted recklessly in the incident on Tuesday over the Black Sea.

When asked this week if the incident could inflame tensions with Washington, Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov insisted that Russian jets didn’t use their weapons or impact the U.S. drone.

Peskov may have been technically correct- but the recently released footage clearly shows the jets interfering with the drone.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba described the collision as a ‘routine incident.’

He said: ‘As long as Russia controls Crimea, these kinds of incidents will be inevitable and the Black Sea will not be a safe place.

‘So the only way to prevent such incidents is actually to kick Russia out of Crimea.’

Russia said on Wednesday it would try to retrieve the remains the drone but appeared to acknowledge the challenges.

Sergei Naryshkin, head of Russia’s foreign intelligence service, said his country had the technological capability to recover the drone’s fragments, which are believed to be off the west coast of Crimea.

‘I don’t know whether we will be able to retrieve it or not, but that it has to be done. And we’ll certainly work on it. I hope, of course, successfully,’ he told state TV.

However, US General Mark Milley said the United States had already taken measures to guard against a loss of sensitive intelligence if the drone were to be recovered by Russia.

‘We’re quite confident that whatever was of value is no longer of value,’ Milley said.

Kejetia market fire: Thief grabbed in attempt to steal during inferno

A young man believed to be in his early twenties has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service for attempting to steal during the inferno at the Kejetia Market.

Around 4 pm Wednesday, March 15, 2023, parts of the market was set ablaze. The incident left several properties at the Kejetia Central Market in Kumasi, the capital city of the Ashanti Region, destroyed.

According to a situational report, while the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) was working to put out the fire, the unidentified suspect is alleged to have joined the firefighter to engage in shoplifting.

The alleged thief was seen being led by the police to the station for questioning in a social media footage that has since gone viral.

Meanwhile, the Fire Service has announced that the fire that engulfed the market has been extinguished.

GNFS said in a statement posted on their social media handles that, “The fierce fire got completely extinguished at 1930 hours by the gallant and dexterous Firefighters.”

The statement added that there were zero firefighter injuries, whiles officers continued to work to ascertain civilian casualties and other crucial details for investigations.

The GNFS confirmed the market fire after multiple news channels reported it on March 15, 2023.

GhanaWeb sources confirmed that the fire started at Kejetia Dubai, where car tyres are sold.

The fire according to reports started around 4:30 pm.

    Zipline introduces home delivery service

Zipline has launched its new drone home delivery service. You can now order medication or food and Zipline can deliver to your home or office, at your doorstep if only you have the space in your yard for the drone to drop off.

It follows the introduction of a new delivery experience by Zipline, a logistics firm.

The new autonomous platform for home deliveries has been designed to be fast, quiet and precise.

Unlike traditional drone delivery services, the new drones used by Zipline fly more than 300-feet above the ground and are nearly inaudible.

They can deliver up to seven times faster than traditional automobile delivery, completing 10-mile deliveries in about 10 minutes, with a service radius of 10 miles carrying a payload of 6-8 pounds.

Zipline’s Platform 2 (P2) will be used in the healthcare and restaurant sectors to expedite diagnostics and deliver prescriptions and medical devices throughout MultiCare’s network of facilities, including hospitals, laboratories and doctors’ offices.

Michigan Medicine will use Zipline’s new service to more than double the number of prescriptions it fills each year through its in-house pharmacy.

The first customer deployment of P2 will follow soon after high-volume flight tests involving more than 10,000 test flights using about 100 aircraft.

Zipline plans to complete about 1 million deliveries by the end of 2023 and expects to operate more flights annually than most airlines by 2025.

“The future of delivery is faster, more sustainable, and creates broader access, all of which provides improved value for our customers,” said Jonathan Neman, Co-Founder and CEO of Sweetgreen.

“Over the last decade, global demand for instant delivery has skyrocketed, but the technology we’re using to deliver is 100 years old. We’re still using the same 3,000-pound, gas combustion vehicles, driven by humans, to make billions of deliveries that usually weigh less than 5 pounds. It’s slow, it’s expensive, and it’s terrible for the planet,” said Keller Rinaudo Cliffton, co-founder and CEO of Zipline.

“Our new service is changing that and will finally make deliveries work for you and around your schedule. We have built the closest thing to teleportation ever created – a smooth, ultrafast, convenient, and truly magical autonomous logistics system that serves all people equally, wherever they are.”
