  • 1996: How a battalion led by Koku Anyidoho’s father rescued 30,000 Rwandans

1996: How a battalion led by Koku Anyidoho’s father rescued 30,000 Rwandans

A plane carrying Rwandan President, Juvénal Habyarimana and Burundi’s president, Cyprien Ntaryamira, was shot down as it prepared to land in Kigali on April 6, 1994.

According to reports, everyone on board the plane died.

People attributed the demise of the two Hutu presidents to the genocide attacks that happened in Rwanda in 1994.

Roadblocks after the shooting of Rwandan President

Narrating what transpired at the time on Citi TV’S Foot Print programme and monitored by GhanaWeb, Retired Army General, Major-General Henry Kwami Anyidoho said he and his team had to ply a different route to the military headquarters as all roads from the airport to the venue were blocked.

He noted that he was appointed the Contingent Commander – the officer in charge of looking after all Ghanaians on the field, including military observers and battalions he commanded at the time.

Getting a call from New York and withdrawal of troops

Former Major-General Henry Kwami Anyidoho noted that he received a call from New York directing for the withdrawal of troops from the mission.

The mass killing of people in Rwanda, he said, led to the withdrawal of Bangladesh and Belgium military men.

He also noted that 10 Belgium soldiers lost their lives in the genocide killings.

“There were three battalions in the mission, one from Belgium, one from Bangladesh and one from Ghana. The Bangladesh and Belgium battalions quickly decided to leave the mission because of killings and they had murdered 10 of the Belgium soldiers very early morning of the 7th. These were troops that were guarding the Prime Minister’s house,” he said.

“I received a call from New York that the way the fighting was ongoing and our tops were not yielding any results so they were planning on withdrawing so I answered the person who spoke to me from New York and said who are you to close the mission. People are dying here. Do you mean we are going to abandon the mission and the people of Rwanda? No, this is not right.”

Ghanaian soldiers are staying to save lives

He responded to inform the caller that Ghanaian soldiers were not retreating though he was not in the position to do so.

According to him, he quickly placed a call to tell whoever was in charge of the decision he took amidst the mass killings, including military men in Rwanda.

“…We are not going anywhere. By then, I had not sought for permission from home at all but I assured him…. So I did and told them we were going to stay because the other two battalions were going and if we were to leave, they were just going to slaughter everybody. Fortunately, we got the approval back.” he said in the interview monitored by GhanaWeb.

Witnessing the rate at which people were dying, he took the decision to ensure Ghanaian soldiers stayed to complete the task of saving lives before they returned home – Ghana.

He said inasmuch as these Ghanaian soldiers were at the forefront and had their lives more exposed, the peacekeeping mission neended to end successfully.

The Ghanaian troops were in the military zone between the government forces and Rwandanis Patriotic Army, he pointed out.

Though some men died while on the peacekeeping mission, others survived and returned to Ghana.

Former Major-General Henry Kwami Anyidoho noted that the wreckage of the plane was found in the deceased’s presidential house and up to date, no one knows how that happened.

UN reduces the number of soldiers on Rwanda mission

As many military men lost their lives in the bid to save others, the United Nations withdrew the number of soldiers on the mission.

The action, Mr Anyidoho felt was wrong as that was the time they needed reinforcement.

He stated that the UN wanted to cut the number of soldiers operating at 212 but the Ghanaian contingents kept about 458 officers to stay on the battlefield.

“They wanted to reduce the number to 212 but we kept the number to about 458,” he said.

    Relationship with Rwandan government

The Rwandan government, he said have been forever grateful to Ghana for their support to save lives in April 6, 1994.

“They thought that without Ghana, things could have been worse,” the ex-Major-General said.

    Background

According to history.com, during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, members of the Hutu ethnic – majority in the east-central African nation of Rwanda murdered as many as 800,000 people, mostly of the Tutsi minority.

Started by Hutu nationalists in the capital of Kigali, the genocide spread throughout the country.

By the time the Tutsi-led Rwandese Patriotic Front gained control of the country through a military offensive in early July, hundreds of thousands of Rwandans were dead.

About 2 million Rwandans fled the country during and immediately after the genocide.

Medikal details why he doesn’t wear his wedding ring

Ghanaian musician, Samuel Frimpong, popularly known as ‘Medikal’, has once again addressed rumors purporting that he and his wife are gradually drifting into separation.

One of the many concerns used in justifying Medikal’s supposedly failed marriage is the fact that he doesn’t wear his wedding band.

In an interview with Abeiku Santana, the exact issue popped up and Medikal was compelled to give an explanation.

Asked about the intent of ditching his wedding ring, the AMG rapper said it is a mere harmless decision he took since they tied the knot in 2020.

“I’ve never worn my ring. Since Fella and I got married, I have never worn a ring and there’s no picture of me wearing a ring. It’s like a watch to me. Even if I decide to wear it, It won’t be all the time and I just don’t feel like wearing it that’s all.”

Medikal asked Ghanaians to stop reading all kinds of meanings into his refusal to wear a wedding band.

“It had nothing to do with us. It doesn’t mean that there is something wrong,” he said.

Recently, the rumors of their breakup intensified after the release of a single which featured Medikal’s ex, ‘Sister Derby’.

This development has been tagged as an act of disrespect, considering the circumstances that led to his fallout with Derby.

Some netizens also think that Medikal should have created some boundaries between him and his ex-lover.

“I have never stated the reason for my separation; it has only ever been rumored, and I would welcome the public to continue to believe those rumors if they so desire. My private life may not necessarily be of interest to the rest of the world, but I do pick what I want the public to know about me.

“I am someone that would not discriminate; I have dated across religions and tribes. I don’t look at a person and question where you are coming from, it just so happens that I find myself with particular kinds of persons, we call it ‘spec’. You know when they tell you or say your spec is half-caste, it becomes that you are drawn to half-castes, it doesn’t mean I haven’t dated dark-skinned. So there is no discrimination, it’s just wherever I find myself then,” He added.

When asked if he has any intentions of getting married, the popular actor stated,

“We never say never. So for me, the doors are still very open but, probably in life you know you tend to look out for certain things and qualities in a woman because you don’t want to have a divorce twice.

“I am going to get married again but it’s going to be with someone with particular characteristics and personality that I can hold on to. If the worst comes to worst, I can hold on to this lady and move on.”

  • I will be arrested come Tuesday – Donald Trump reveals

Former President of the United States of America (USA) Donald John Trump says he expects some members of the security particularly the FBI to pick him up in a swoop arrest come Tuesday March 21, 2023.

On Saturday, Trump announced he would be arrested on Tuesday in a criminal case involving hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels, but there has been no official confirmation on the likelihood that charges will be brought.

Top Republicans, including some of Donald Trump’s potential rivals for the party’s 2024 presidential nomination, rushed to his defence after the former president said he expected to be arrested next week.

“The idea of indicting a former president of the United States is deeply troubling to me, as it is to tens of millions of Americans,” said former vice-president Mike Pence, who is widely expected to launch a campaign for the Republican nomination in the coming weeks.

The reaction underscores the political risks faced by would-be opponents who are eager to convince voters that it is time to move on from the former president, but who must contend with the fact that he remains the most popular figure in the party.

Trump garnered similar support last summer after the FBI searched his Mar-a-Lago club as part of an investigation into his handling of classified documents. The search also proved a fundraising boon.

Among those coming to Trump’s defence on Saturday were House speaker Kevin McCarthy, who said a possible indictment would be “an outrageous abuse of power by a radical DA [district attorney] who lets violent criminals walk as he pursues political vengeance” against Trump.

McCarthy said he would direct relevant Republican-led House committees “to immediately investigate if federal funds are being used to subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated prosecutions”. McCarthy has not endorsed Trump’s White House campaign, but Trump helped McCarthy secure the speakership after a contentious campaign that required multiple rounds of voting.

McCarthy’s predecessor as speaker, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, said in a statement, “the former president’s announcement this morning is reckless: doing so to keep himself in the news and to foment unrest among his supporters.”

“He cannot hide from his violations of the law, disrespect for our elections and incitements to violence.”

On Saturday, Trump posted a message on his Truth Social platform, referring to himself in the third person, saying: “The far and away leading Republican candidate and former president of the United States of America will be arrested on Tuesday of next week.”

Law enforcement officials in New York have been making security preparations for the possibility that Trump could be indicted, but there has been no public announcement of any timeframe or any indictment.

Donald Trump in Davenport, Iowa, on 13 March.

A spokesperson and a lawyer for Trump said later on Saturday that his post was based on media reports rather than any actual update from, or communication with, prosecutors. Trump’s post cited “illegal leaks from a corrupt and highly political Manhattan district attorney’s office”.

The district attorney’s office declined to comment.

In his post, Trump called on his supporters to “PROTEST, PROTEST, PROTEST!!!”

The post evoked the message from the then-president that preceded the insurrection by extremist supporters at the US Capitol on 6 January 2021 which ultimately failed to thwart the certification of Joe Biden’s victory.

People think I’m a fool because I wear ladies’ dress – DJ Azonto

Ghanaian disc jockey and musician DJ Azonto has disclosed that people perceive him to be a fool because of his love for wearing ladies’ dresses.

He asserted that all of his efforts in the music industry have proven futile in terms of recognition because industry players have failed to properly acknowledge his contributions partly due to his lifestyle choice.

Speaking in an interview with Onua TV, the ‘Fa No Fom’ hitmaker added that he deserves to be nominated for artist of the year in all award schemes.

“I believe in myself but people don’t believe in me, recently I had a nomination for Ghana Europe Music awards, can you believe that a whole me they’ve placed me in Efia Odo’s category?

“They’re not working, they’re lazy, I’m doing the work and they don’t want to agree. I deserve to be applauded…because I wear ladies’ dresses so they think I’m a fool,” he said.

DJ Azonto has been nominated for the ‘New Artiste of the Year under the same category as actress-turned-musician, Efia Odo, at the upcoming Ghana Europe Music Awards, however, he claims that he doesn’t have to be pegged in the same category as Efia Odo in any award scheme.

Story of the boy behind the viral “cry-laugh” meme video

He is 7 years old and his name is Albert Ofosu Nketia. His video is one of the most popular in recent times, trending on most social media platforms including TikTok, WhatsApp, Twitter, and the likes.

Albert was captured in a video crying and transitioning into laughter within a matter of a few seconds and has since gained fame with his video going viral.

In an interview with Oyerepa at his residence in Kumasi, mother of the little boy; Rosina explained the reason behind the video which many have tagged as hilarious.
According to her, he started crying because he wanted a particular meal on one Saturday but couldn’t get that. When his grandmother tried soothing him with a funny song, he burst into laughter in the process.

“It was a Saturday, and he said he wanted to eat yam. I was washing at the time and I didn’t have any at home so I didn’t know if to stop and go to the market to get some. But I had unripe plantain at the time so I cooked it for him.

“When he saw the stew and remembered how well it would have gone down with boiled yam rather than the plantain, he started crying.

    https://www.youtube.com/shorts/xb__JKtta4k

“In the beginning, we convinced him to eat it and when he ate it till it was left with two fingers, his grandmother asked him, ‘so you ate this plantain’ then he started crying again. In an effort to make him stop crying, Nana (his grandmother) started singing a peculiar song for him and then the laughter came in in the process till it stopped,” she added.

According to Rosina his mother, the video was not meant to go out of their home and the reaction after it was leaked by a friend in the neighbourhood wasn’t a good one.

“The first day I saw the video, I didn’t know what to do and if I had discovered the person who leaked the video on that day, I would have made it a police case because I thought it was a video that was taken by his uncle to send to his father,” she said.

Adding, “He couldn’t send it and it stayed on the phone. But his uncle sold the phone and the person who bought it got access to the video, his friend transferred it and released it.

When the said man met me after and greeted me, I didn’t even respond because I felt he could have told me about it”.

Albert’s mother also noted that although he was born with no special abilities, he developed some conditions which made him a special child. He however is studios and is currently being groomed by his mother who is also a pupil teacher.

“When he was 7 months old, he was put in an incubator, on and off and then after, when he started growing, I realized it was a condition.
“But through physio and other treatments, he started walking at 3 years. He is in school, in KG 1. When he comes back from school, I help him do his homework,” he noted.

Women are not supposed to assist their lovers financially – Michy

Ghanaian socialite, Michy, has insisted that it is a terrible idea for a woman to financially assist her lover whether in marriage or in courtship.

According to her, it is the sole responsibility of men to provide in relationships hence women are only expected to maintain the home and keep the affair alive.

Shatta Wale’s baby mama additionally revealed that she can never date a man who’s not financially sound because it will be an insult to her entire existence.

The songstress and television personality asserted that ladies should never support their men because those days when women used to do that and later got dumped are over.

“I used to believe that I had to support my man with the little I had, but those days are over for me. My man must be financially sound and willing to spend. At least, he must own a house,” she said in a discussion with KessbenFM.

When asked if she would consider having a second child, Michy noted that it was a very good suggestion, but she would wait and tie the knot before giving birth again.

“Majesty is seven years old, and it would be nice to have another baby, but not until I get married,” she said.

Some scenes captured at Christian Atsu’s funeral

Asides from some major highlights which trended on social media, the funeral ceremony of the late Christian Atsu Twasam was also characterized by other interesting incidents.

Cameras captured both wild and interesting scenes at the forecourt of the State House where patrons from all walks of life, trooped in to pay their last respect to the former Black Stars player.

The funeral was successful, but these interesting events couldn’t go unnoticed.

    1. Sulley Muntari almost attacks paparazzi

But for the timely intervention of some individuals present, former Black Stars Player, Sulley Muntari, would have landed a blow on the faces of some videographers and bloggers who chased him around with cameras while he was busily mourning his friend.

Unclear what necessitated the scuffle, things escalated so fast and Muntari almost beat the ‘living daylight’ out of these individuals.

This incident occurred not too long after he arrived at the event grounds while being escorted toward his seat.

    2. Hundreds of mourners swamp Christian Atsu’s hearse

The last time such an incident was witnessed was in 2018 when scores of teaming fans invaded the funeral grounds and crowded the hearse carrying the late Ebony Reigns’ mortal remains.

On Friday, March 17, 2023, shortly after Christian Atsu’s mortal remains was lifted and placed in the hearse, it was an extremely difficult task for the security to dispatch the crowd and clear the path for it to head to the burial grounds.

All kinds of sympathizers, particularly some members of the Black Stars Supporters Union were captured wailing on the streets, making it difficult for the body to exit the event grounds.

    3. Asamoah Gyan performs on stage

In honour of his late colleague, former Black Stars Captain, Asamoah Gyan took the center stage, grabbed the microphone, and entertained fans at Christian Atsu’s funeral held at the forecourt of the State House in Accra.

‘Baby Jet’, who is also known to be a well-talented musician, fed the audience with back-to-back songs and awesome performances that got fans on their feet.

He also performed a couple of songs noted as the late Christian Atsu’s favorites.

    4. Beautiful cultural display

The display of tradition was at its best at the funeral grounds where some cultural troupes fully represented Christian Atsu’s tribe in grand style.

The late footballer who is said to be of Ga-Adangbe and Ewe descent had both beautiful cultures displayed at his funeral held at the State House in Accra,

The costumes, dance, drumming, and incantations of tribute at the event were an interesting sight to behold.

Atsu took the right decision by marrying a white woman – Langabel explains

Christian Atsu took a right decision to marry a white woman, Black Stars hypeman Langabel has stated.

In explaining his view in an interview with TV3, the player was better off marrying a non-Ghanaian because of custody pf properties that come up when husbands die.

“What made me happy is that Atsu never married a Black woman,” Langabel said after recounting fond memories with the former footballer.

“Because when Atsu marries a Black woman, this funeral will be dogged by controversies between both sides of the families, usually fighting for property.

“As it stands now, there is no basis for such quarrels because Atsu’s sister will be in charge of his estate having taken care of him,” he stressed.

Langabel was part of wellwishers who thronged State House forecourt for the final funeral of the former Black Stars player. Atsu has since been interred in his hometown.

The March 17, 2023 final funeral rites of Christian Atsu attracted people from all walks of life as the forecourt of the State House buzzed with activity.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his vice were in attendance along with a high-powered government delegation. Also in attendance was the former president John Dramani Mahama.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) was led by its president Kurt Okraku who also led members of the association and a group of former Black Stars players.

Atsu died in the February 6 earthquake that struck Turkey and parts of Syria. He was declared missing till his remains were recovered on February 18.

Canada: Teen kills two officers on duty in Edmonton

Two police officers in the western Canadian province of Alberta were shot and killed in the line of duty while responding to a family dispute.

The suspect in the fatal shooting is a 16-year-old male, according to reports in Canadian media.

Police in the city of Edmonton said the teenager died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A woman who is related to the suspect was also taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The officers killed were Travis Jordan, 35, and Brett Ryan, 30. Both worked with the Edmonton Police Service. Mr Jordan had been with the force for more than eight years, while Mr Ryan had been an officer for more than five years.

Police Chief Dale McFee said the two officers were shot on Thursday after responding to a domestic dispute call at an apartment complex in Edmonton at around 00:47 local time (06:47 GMT).

As they approached the apartment, Chief McFee said they were shot by a young male suspect.

“At this time, all indications are that they did not have a chance to discharge their firearms,” he said.

“The two members were rushed to the hospital by our own members who worked valiantly to save their lives en route. Unfortunately, they were both declared deceased at the hospital.”

Chief McFee appeared visibly emotional as he spoke to reporters on Thursday about the incident.

“I can’t tell you how devastated we are with their loss,” Chief McFee said.

“These two members died in service and protection of our community and their lives and sacrifice will not be forgotten.”

Police did not confirm the age of the suspect publicly, but police sources have told the CBC and Canadian newspaper the Globe and Mail that he was 16 years old, and that the injured woman was his mother.

Condolences have poured in from several police forces around Canada, including in Vancouver and Toronto, as well as from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“Every day, police officers put themselves in harm’s way to keep people safe,” Mr Trudeau said in a post on Twitter. “The news that two Edmonton police officers have been killed in the line of duty reminds us of that reality. I’m sending my condolences to the officers’ loved ones and colleagues – we’re here for you.”

Edmonton mayor Amarjeet Sohi described it as a “very difficult and sad day”.

“Every day, families of the police officers send their loved ones off to duty, to work and hope they return home safely,” Mr Sohi said.

“We hold you in our hearts as you mourn this profound loss and we mourn it with you,” he said.

Eight police officers have been killed on the line of duty in Canada in the last six months. The other fatalities occurred in Ontario and British Columbia.

  • 2024 polls: Mahama outlines measures to collate NDC results

2024 polls: Mahama outlines measures to collate NDC results

Former President John Dramani Mahama has said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is putting measures in place to collate the results of the December 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections by midnight of the election day.

He, therefore, urged party members, particularly polling agents who would be selected to man the polling stations across the country not to sleep but be vigilant on December 7, 2024 until results are counted and declared.

Mr Mahama, who was speaking in Sunyani in the Bono Region to end his two-day campaign tour, charged persons to be selected as polling agents to ensure that all ballot papers were counted and reported to the party’s office through mobile phone calls before they brought the pink sheets personally to the party’s office.

He said figures secured by the party would be uploaded into a system and gave assurance that by midnight of the election day, the party would have all results.

    Training workshop

Mr Mahama said the party would organise five different training workshops for all polling agents to be selected by the party in order to improve their knowledge and skills.

He said victory in the 2024 general election required hard work and sleepless nights and, therefore, urged polling agents to exhibit competency by being extremely vigilant to ensure that the ballots were protected until the results were counted and declared.

Mr Mahama said he would work hard to pool resources together such as vehicles, motorbikes and bicycles, including party T-shirts and flags in order to facilitate the 2024 campaign.

    100 per cent

The NDC delegates from the region pledged 100 per cent votes for Mr Mahama in the upcoming party presidential primary.

The delegates in the 12 constituencies in the region warned that the party would suffer another heavy defeat if they failed to endorse Mr Mahama’s candidature in the party’s presidential primary slated for May 13, 2023.

    Previous works visible

The Bono Regional Chairman of the party, Kwadwo Nyamekye-Marfo, who spoke on behalf of the delegates, said the former President had a good record of accomplishments.

He said Mr Mahama’s performance as President in the country was incomparable and unprecedented in the Fourth Republic, explaining that his achievements were still visible across the country.

At Nkrankwanta in the Dormaa West District, Mr Mahama said the government had overburdened businesses with huge taxes thereby leading to their collapse.

He said he was disheartened by the way businesses were folding up as a result of the reckless management of the economy.

The former President Mahama also took his campaign to Wamfie in the Dormaa East Constituency where he said the next NDC government would not start new projects but would rather concentrate on and complete all abandoned and uncompleted projects scattered across the country.

“We won’t be in a hurry to start new projects, every district, we will take an inventory of all projects that have been abandoned and we will commit our resources to finish them and when that is done, we can start new projects”, he stated.

    Unity

Speaking at Dormaa-Ahenkro in the Dormaa Central Municipality, Mr Mahama called on the rank and file of the party to unite in order to win the Dormaa Central seat.

He said he (Mahama) had observed that it was disunity that had made it impossible for the party to win the seat and challenged members to unite to win the seat during the 2024 general election.

When it comes to economic management, the NDC is utterly incompetent – Majority leader

Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, the majority leader, asserted that the NDC administration is ineffective at managing the country despite the current economic crisis it is experiencing.

Without taking into account COVID-19, he claimed that the Akufo-Addo administration was reforming Ghana’s economy, which saw growth of 7.0 percent in terms of ECOWAS GDP.

The majority leader claimed that because there was no COVID-19, the Russia-Ukraine war, the Akufo-Addo government outperformed the John Mahama administration in his final debate on the 2023 SoNA.

“Mr speaker in 2019 the ECOWAS GDP averaged 3.5 per cent under Akufo-Addo the economy grew by 6.5 per cent which means that in the first 3 years of Akufo-Addo’s administration before COVID-19 struck GDP growth at an average of 7.0 per cent as compared to your shambolic performance of 3.9 per cent.

“…Mr Speaker so the management of the economy you people (NDC) don’t come anywhere close.”

He added that the economy is bouncing back especially in the industry and manufacturing sector in registering 4.8 per cent growth in the last 3 years.

  • Reject new Electoral Commission C.I.- Coalition to Parliament

Reject new Electoral Commission C.I.- Coalition to Parliament

A Coalition of smaller political parties, “Third Force Alliance,” has called on Parliament to reject the new Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) by the Electoral Commission (EC) and not allow it to mature and become law.

The coalition made up of the People’s National Convention (PNC), the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) said it held the view that the new C.I. was not only obnoxious and unconstitutional, but it was inimical to the tenets of participatory democracy in the country.

The new C.I. seeks to make the Ghana card the sole identification document for voter registration, and when laid in Parliament, will come into force after 21 sitting days, except the House annuls it by a vote of not less than two-thirds of all Members of Parliament (MPs).

Last month, the Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa, told Parliament, as part of the pre-laying of the C.I., that the Ghana Card as the sole registration document would ensure that only eligible Ghanaians registered as voters.

    Presser

However, addressing a press conference in Accra yesterday, the Spokesperson of the coalition and National Communications Secretary of the PNC, Awudu Ishaq, said it was time for the EC to apprise itself of the dangers and repercussions that the C.I. posed to the country’s nascent democracy.

Mr Ishaq said the teething challenges that continued to bedevil the Ghana Card registration process made the proposed C.I. even more objectionable.

“Apart from logistical and network concerns, we now know that the operations of the National Identification Authority (NIA) have been hamstrung by financial constraints.

“These financial challenges, as the NIA itself has disclosed, have led to 3.5 million blank cards being locked up in a bonded warehouse due to its indebtedness to its private partner, Identity Management System (IMS), while another 645,663 cards are yet to be issued to Ghanaians who have completed their registrations.

Additionally, about 631,847 cards have not been printed while as we speak, an estimated 2.5 million Ghanaians are yet to be registered in the first place,” he said.

The group expressed shock at the EC’s proposal to abandon its own guarantor system which had been integrated into L.I 2111(2012), the very law regulating, the issuance of the Ghana Card.

“Making the Ghana Card the sole document for the identification of Ghanaians can only be construed as a devious plot by the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission acting in cohorts with the failed Akufo-Addo and Bawumia government to subvert the inalienable right of millions of Ghanaians,” Mr Ishaq alleged.

    Continuous registration

He contended that the decision by the EC to abandon the registration of voters at polling stations and electoral area levels for registration at district centres would hugely disenfranchise a greater majority of prospective voters considering the geographical outlook of the districts across the country.

“This arrangement would require people to travel long distances in order to access the registration centres in the districts.

Apart from inconveniencing prospective voters, this will further place a financial burden on the very Ghanaians whose economic and financial circumstances have been worsened,” he added.

    Guarantor system

Mr Ishaq said the unpopular decision by the EC to expunge the guarantor system from the proposed C.I. as a form of identification for the purposes of voter registration is curious, untenable and inexplicable.

“Why would the Electoral Commission accept a Ghana Card which can be procured through the guarantor system as proof of citizenship at the National Identification Authority but cannot allow the same or similar guarantor system for voter registration?” he asked.

  • Ofori-Atta and others ought to have received Order of Birim, not Volta – Asiedu Nketiah

Ofori-Atta and others ought to have received Order of Birim, not Volta – Asiedu Nketiah

The Order of Volta awards, which were given to some Ghanaians for their participation in the government’s COVID-19 efforts and most recent accomplishments, have been rejected by some party members, according to the National Chairperson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah claims that the NDC members refused the awards on moral grounds since some of the recipients, including some ministers of state, profited from money raised for the pandemic and are to blame for the misery in Ghana.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM on Wednesday, Asiedu Nketaih said that the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Ataa, and the Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, who also received awards, deserve the Order of Birim and not the Order of Volta because the Birim river is the most polluted in Ghana.

“Most of the awardees contributed to the messing up of the COVID-19 funds. And so, if people who have done wrong are being awarded what is the motivation for people who have worked hard to take part in it.

“I suggest that they change the name of the award to Order of Birim, they should remove the Volta from it. The Volta River is clean by the Birim is the most polluted in Ghana, that is what they deserve,” he said in Twi.

    About awards

Individuals, institutions, and partners who distinguished themselves in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, have been honoured by the state at the National Honours and Awards 2023, held at the Accra International Conference Centre.

Also receiving awards are members of the legal team, both men and women, who were charged with ensuring that the maritime boundary dispute with Cote d’Ivoire ended favourably for Ghana.

In all, some 19,557 frontline health workers received certificates and plaques for their dedicated services in the line of duty.

Additionally, about 50 individuals and entities also received the Order of the Volta – Companion awards, comprising members of the National COVID-19 Taskforce, Trustees of the Ghana COVID-19 Private Sector Fund, and International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) Technical Team and Legal Advisors.

The national awards are presented to persons who have made immense and recognized contributions in sectors such as the civil service, military, prisons service, education and public health, agriculture, commerce and industry, the judiciary, scientific and other research, sports, culture and the arts, and the financial sector.

Bank of Ghana collaborates with Ghana Air Force to airlift cash nationwide

The Bank of Ghana has joined forces with the Ghana Air Force to airlift cash to some of its regional offices nationwide.

The move is expected to help reduce robberies of bullion vans, some of which results in fatalities.

BANK OF GHANA, GHANA AIR FORCE COMMISSION HELIPAD TO AIRLIFT CURRENCIES TO SEFWI BOAKO

Following the accident of a Bank of Ghana Bullion Van in November 2019 at Techiman, in the Bono East Region of Ghana, the Management of the Bank of Ghana established a committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the accident and make recommendations to improve currency movement operations in the country.

Amongst other recommendations, the committee suggested to the Management of the Bank to explore other means of distributing currencies across the country. Based on the committee’s report, the Bank engaged the Ghana Air Force on the possibility of airlifting currencies to some of its Regional Offices in the country.

The engagement with the Air Force led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which made the Air Force to commence the lifting of currencies from Accra to Tamale in late 2020. After a successful lifting of currencies via the Tamale-Accra route, the two institutions begun ways of extending the services to other Regional Offices.

Based on the foregoing, the Ghana Air Force in collaboration with the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, begun the construction of a Helipad at the Bank’s Regional office at Sefwi Boako in the Western North of Ghana.

At a short ceremony on Thursday, 16th March 2023, the Air Force and the 48 Engineer Regiment handed over the newly constructed Helipad at Sefwi Boako to the Bank.

The helipad will boost the Bank’s currency movement operations to the Western part of the country by airlifting currencies from Accra to Sefwi Boako.

The handing-over ceremony was witnessed by officials of the Bank, the Ghana Air Force and 48 Engineer Regiment Officers. The Bank’s team was led by the Director of the Security Department of the Bank, Wing Commander Kwame Asare-Boateng (Rtd), Nana Buabeng of the Corporate Management Services Department and the Regional Manager of the Sefwi Boako Office. On behalf of the Governor, Wg Cdr Asare-Boateng expressed the Bank’s appreciation to the Ghana Air Force, 48 Engineers Regiment and other stakeholders for helping to construct the Helipad in record time. He indicated that the helipad will enable the Bank to transport currencies safely to Sefwi Boako without any attacks on the Bank’s bullion vans.

The Air Force and the 48 Engineer Regiment were represented by Air Cdre C.N.A Mills, and Lt. Col. Albert Tekyi.

  • Why is Bawumia lying that Gold-for-Oil being the basis for fuel decrease – Beatrice Annan

Why is Bawumia lying that Gold-for-Oil being the basis for fuel decrease – Beatrice Annan

Beatrice Annan, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) media team, has accused Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of misleading Ghanaians regarding his assertion that the Gold-for-Oil policy, which he is supporting, is the cause of the country’s lower fuel prices.

She claims that the small amount of oil imported into the nation as a result of the program has no bearing on the cost of oil-related goods.

Speaking in an interview on TV3, on Thursday, which GhanaWeb monitored, lawyer Annan added that oil prices are going down because world market prices are going down.

“If somebody tells you that in the space of 5 months, I have brought you Gold-for-Oil that can not even supply you for a month but some way somehow that is what is accounting for the reduction then even if you are not an industry player you know from the word go that he lied.

“Because in January world oil price was $87 per barrel, in February it reduced to $86, as at now it is $74.47. And so fuel prices at the international market are reducing.

“It is the reason fuel prices are reducing, not because of Gold-for-Oil. And for God’s sake we have to be truthful to the people of Ghana,” she said.

The Head of Ghana’s Economic Management Team, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, took a swipe at critics of the government’s Gold-for-oil policy.

Touting the success of the policy which is currently in its third month of implementation, the vice president said the country will witness more benefits from the policy which ultimately will help stabilise the exchange rate as well as prices of fuel.

“We have to understand, the prices of fuel will go up and will come down. But what we expect to see under the Gold-For-Oil Policy is more stability in the pricing and also savings in foreign exchange. There is more to come, this is the third month of the operation of the policy.

“Some people said it will not work; Ghana does not have enough gold. How can you say that? We’ve been mining this gold for 200 years; they keep taking it out and it cannot work for us? It doesn’t make sense,” he said.

“There are people who are very disappointed that it is working but bleeding is allowed. We have an impossibility mindset. They can keep to it, for us all things are possible by the grace of God,” Dr Bawumia added.

    Pump prices for fuel decrease

The leading OMC, GOIL, sold a litre of gasoline for $12.95 and a litre of diesel for $13.49. This was discovered during checks this newspaper conducted yesterday at a few filling stations in Accra.

Diesel and gasoline rates from TotalEnergies and Shell, respectively, have been lowered to 13.49 and 12.95 pounds per liter.

Petrosol charges 12.97 for a litre of gasoline while charging 13.37 for a litre of diesel.

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) predicted on Tuesday that gas prices would decrease by between three and ten percent.

The prices of all three major petroleum products—gasoline, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)—were forecast to decline, according to IES.

The IES said, “The last two weeks have seen price indicators on both the domestic and international fronts falling and this can translate into some price reductions at the pumps for various petroleum products”.

The domestic fuel market prices are projected to fall between ¢12.60 for petrol, ¢13.40 for diesel and ¢14 per Kilogramme for LPG. Some Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have started reducing the prices of petroleum products at the pumps.

Checks at some filling stations by this paper in Accra yesterday saw the leading OMC, GOIL, selling a litre of petrol at ¢12.95 and diesel at ¢13.49.

TotalEnergies and Shell also have dropped their prices for both diesel and petrol to ¢13.49 and petrol, ¢12.95 per litre

Petrosol is selling a litre of petrol at ¢12.97, whereas diesel is going for ¢13. 37 per litre.

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) on Tuesday projected that fuel prices will fall between three per cent and 10 per cent at the pumps.

IES predicted that the prices of all three key petroleum products – petrol, diesel and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) were expected to fall.

  • The untold story of Christian Atsu’s difficult journey to Europe

The untold story of Christian Atsu’s difficult journey to Europe

At age 16, Gomoa Fetteh Feyenoord Academy demanded a whopping GH¢25,000 from Cheetah FC for the services of the player who had been scouted by a FIFA-certified agency, Romp Project.

Christian Atsu’s talent was so glaring and his future very promising that Fetteh Feyenoord, where he was first discovered and groomed as a teenager, was not willing to let him go on the cheap, though the Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cheetah FC, Abdul Haye Yartey, had secured a trial opportunity at Sporting Lisbon for the precocious youngster at the time.

The Cheetah FC Founder, who played a significant role in the player’s career development and maintained a close relationship with his protégé until his death, narrates how the youngster’s career got off and how he became the shining light among his peers.

“It all started in 2008 when I was contacted by my partner, Graham Heydorn, to scout for players for his Romp Project during their visit to Ghana for the African Cup of Nations,” Mr Yartey told the Daily Graphic in an interview.

“I had my selected players, so I called Sam Arday [now deceased, then Technical Director of Feyenoord] to allow us to play against his Feyenoord side and he agreed to the request. So, we honoured the match, and Atsu, together with three players from my team, was scouted by the Romp Project.

“That was where the Atsu story started from because it turned out to be a successful decision, as we came out with one of the best players on the continent.”

    Failed move to Sporting Lisbon

Atsu, Alhassan Wakaso, Aaron Amoah, and Evans Ofosu Antwi turned out as the players scouted for the Romp Project, in the presence of Paola Cardoso, then Chief Scout at Portuguese giants, Sporting Lisbon.

Impressed with the talents on display, Cardoso facilitated a trial for the players at his club, but Feyenoord refused to release their most prized asset to travel to Portugal.

    Atsu

According to Mr Haye, Feyenoord’s refusal to allow Atsu to travel turned somewhat chaotic because the young footballer’s family objected to his club’s rejection of a trial.

Seen as a lifetime opportunity for the youngster, Atsu’s family attempted to wrest him from Feyenoord to clear the way for the trial at Sporting Lisbon.

“I was home one day when Isaac Twasam, a senior brother to Atsu, came to me wanting to sign him from Feyenoord so he could travel to Portugal for the trial, but it became very difficult.

“Feyenoord were holding out for GH¢25,000 as the price tag for the youngster, but it was too expensive at the time because we were buying players for GH¢700 then,” Yartey said.

Unfortunately, Atsu failed to travel to Portugal for the trials, with only Alhassan Wakaso making the trip because Aaron Amoah and Evans Ofosu Antwi were called into the national under-17 team (Black Starlets) at the time.

    Signing with Cheetah FC

The whole story changed when Mr Yartey received a call from Sam Arday to come for a discussion to sign Atsu the turning point in his football career.

“A year and a half later, Feyenoord called for another meeting to renegotiate the signing of Atsu, because the player’s contract was about to expire in three months’ time, as the Fetteh side were unwilling to extend it.

“So, we finally agreed to pay GH¢3,000 for his signature, but Feyenoord insisted on a 40 per cent onward transfer, so he finally joined Cheetah FC,” Mr Yartey narrated further.

Mr Yartey said he contacted Graham Heydorn of Romp Project to inform him of the acquisition of Atsu by Cheetah FC and immediately, the European scout facilitated a trial for the youngster at Portuguese giants, FC Porto.

    Breakthrough move to FC Porto

Atsu’s first deal was a six-month loan which was extended by a year for which Cheetah FC received €145,000 from FC Porto, with Feyenoord pocketing €58,000 as their share of his onward transfer as captured in the contract with Kasoa-based Cheetah FC.

“I remember what we went through to get his passport and visa for him to travel, and at the end of the day it was worth it.

“It was very difficult for him [Atsu] to break into the first team immediately because he was very young, but he impressed and finally got the breakthrough he deserved.”

Atsu went on to play for English sides Chelsea, Everton, Bournemouth, and Newcastle United, in addition to loan spells at Spanish club Malaga and Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem.

After leaving Newcastle in 2021, he moved to Saudi Arabian side Al Raed, for a year, before joining Turkish club Hatayspor until his untimely death in the earthquake that hit Turkiye last month.

    Humanitarian side

Atsu played numerous roles in the lives of many but was mainly known for his philanthropic work with the Crime Check Foundation and Arms Around the Child.

He was lauded by many for touching lives with his humanitarian works, and Yartey believes he was sent on earth for a mission.

“He is someone that likes to help people without making it public and that was how generous he was.

“There were times he did things beyond our imagination, but that was nature, and I will forever miss him,” Mr Yartey said, as he detailed the soft side a football icon famed for his talent and amazing display of philanthropy, without seeking publicity for those noble acts.

GJA sign MoU to train female journalists with 2 others

An agency under the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT (GI-KACE), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the Alliance for Women in Media Africa (AWMA) to train female journalists on digital skills.

The MoU was signed at this year’s Females in Tech (FEMITECH) Conference organised by GI-KACE on March 8, 2023, which coincided with the International Women’s Day celebration.

The MoU aims to address the gender gap in digital skills among journalists and empower more women to excel in the profession.

The FEMITECH Conference aims to inspire and empower women in this industry and create a supportive community to help them achieve their goals.

    Benefits of MoU

At the signing of the MoU, the Director-General of GI-KACE, Dr Collins Yeboah-Afari, expressed delight with the partnership to empower female journalists in the country with digital skills.

He said the media industry was rapidly changing, hence the need to quip journalists with the latest tools and techniques in order stay relevant and competitive.

“Through this partnership, we hope to bridge the gender gap in digital skills and create opportunities for women to advance in their careers,” he noted, adding that “this partnership will benefit female journalists and the communities they serve”.

Dr Yeboah-Afari said by equipping female journalists with the necessary ICT skills, “we can help to ensure that their voices are heard, and that important stories are told”.

The Vice-President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Linda Asante Agyei, signed for GJA, while Shamima Muslim, the convener of AWMA, signed on behalf of the organisation.

    Awards

Putin now a wanted man due to a war crimes warrant

An important human rights organization has declared Vladimir Putin to be a “wanted man” after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest order for him on charges of war crimes in Ukraine.

The Russian president is the subject of a warrant that seeks to extradite him to The Hague, Netherlands, to stand trial for allegedly smuggling Ukrainian minors into his nation.

Since the beginning of the large-scale invasion, reports by the UN, many human rights organizations, and the US-based Conflict Observatory have described a “vast network” of detention centers and convoys.

The charges laid down by the ICC this afternoon relate to the ‘unlawful deportation’ of children from occupied areas of Ukraine into Russia and states that there are grounds to believe the two suspects bear ‘criminal responsibility’ for the alleged crimes.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) is working to document war crimes and has previously told of ‘unspeakable stories’ regarding alleged executions, torture, rape and looting by Moscow’s troops.

Balkees Jarrah, associate international justice director, said: ‘This is a big day for the many victims of crimes committed by Russian forces in Ukraine since 2014. With these arrest warrants, the ICC has made Putin a wanted man and taken its first step to end the impunity that has emboldened perpetrators in Russia’s war against Ukraine for far too long.

‘The warrants send a clear message that giving orders to commit or tolerating serious crimes against civilians may lead to a prison cell in The Hague. The court’s warrants are a wakeup call to others committing abuses or covering them up that their day in court may be coming, regardless of their rank or position.’

In April last year, HRW crisis and conflict director Ida Sawyer spoke of harrowing cases of human rights abuses by the Kremlin’s troops.

Victims and witnesses who spoke to the non-profit organisation told of rape, summary executions, unlawful violence and threats.

Cases of ‘forcible transfers’ of Ukrainian civilians into Russia or other occupied areas have also been documented by the group in what it has described as ‘a potential crime against humanity’.

International Criminal Court issues arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin

The warrant for Mr Putin and another for Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, Russia’s commissioner for children’s rights, relate to the alleged trafficking of children across the border into Russia.

ICC president Piotr Hofmanksi said: ‘It is forbidden by international law for occupying powers to transfer civilians from the territory they live in to other territories.

‘Children enjoy special protection under the Geneva Convention.’

Mr Hofmanski added: ‘This is an important moment in the process of justice before the ICC.

‘The judges have reviewed the information and evidence submitted by the prosecutor and contend there are credible allegations against these persons for the alleged crimes.

‘The ICC is doing its hard work as a court of law, the judges issued arrest warrants, the execution depends on international co-operation.’

He also highlighted the footballer’s exceptional achievements, including his steady rise to fame and his significant contribution to the senior national male football team, the Black Stars.

During the parliamentary session, Woyome read a moving three-page tribute that chronicled Atsu’s life and accomplishments, including his philanthropic endeavours such as the school building project for orphans at Senya Beraku, and his work as an ambassador for Arms Around the Child, an organization dedicated to helping disadvantaged children.

Woyome emphasised the importance of honouring Ghana’s heroes while they are still alive, calling for a change in how the country recognizes its notable figures.

  • Ghanaians must support local businesses in order to encourage entrepreneurs- Asha Mweru

Ghanaians must support local businesses in order to encourage entrepreneurs- Asha Mweru

The Co-founder of WomenWork, a network of professional female executives and business owners across Africa, Asha Mweru has called on Ghanaians to support entrepreneurs particularly women in the country by patronising their goods and services.

She explained that such a measure would ultimately encourage small businesses to grow and support economic development.

Miss Mweru stated this in an interview with Graphic Online on Thursday, March 16, 2023 on the sidelines of the closing ceremony of a four-month Catapult pilot training programme dubbed “the first Capstone Day” in Accra.

The Capstone Day was an event organised by WomenWork for Catapult programme trainees after completion of their training to create a platform for them to introduce their new products or services they have developed to a group of potential strategic partners, financiers, investors and business advisors for support.

One of the partners that graced the event was an Actress and Television hostess, Anita Erskine, who is also the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Anita Erskine Media, a boutique content production, and distribution firm.

The Catapult pilot programme is being implemented in Kenya and Ghana by the WomenWork with support from Argidius Foundation. It was aimed at creating access to networks and providing technical support skills to ensure a higher success rate in the businesses of the beneficiaries of the programme.

In all four women entrepreneurs were presented with certificates at the end of their training. They are, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Isabella Healthcare Services, Naana Akyaa Asante, Creative Director and Owner of Bello Edu, an organisation for women’s clothing, Alima Bello, Founder of Wonfliki, a firm that provides agricultural drone services and data, Hillary Adare and the Founder of Checky Monkey, a child after school centre, Asha Bello.

    Innovative, conducive environment

While encouraging women entrepreneurs to be innovative and produce quality goods and services, Ms Mweru entreated government, investors and other stakeholders to create a conducive environment for small businesses to grow.

“What are investors and government doing?; what are policy makers doing?; different people must support entrepreneurs at different levels and in different ways. If you support only the big businesses what happens to the small ones?” the co-founder further asked.

She encouraged people to be creative and innovative to solve their own problems, stressing that “If you see some rubbish somewhere try to collect it but do it in a cheaper, faster way”.

    Circular economy

Ms Mweru indicated that patronising goods and services in the country would equally create what she described as a “circular economy” where resources are gradually distributed among Ghanaians themselves thereby boosting the local economy.

She said in all there were six women who were trained under the Catapult programme in Ghana but four were presented with certificates at the event.

These women, she pointed out have therefore become part of the Womenwork Network across Africa as they will work with over 5,000 women who are also in different professions.
Womenwork she noted has trained over 600 women in digital skills and reached over 65,000 women-led micro businesses in Kenya.

    The organisation

Co-founded in Kenya with Pan-African ambition by Isis Nyong’o and Asha Mweru, WomenWork is focused on the advancement of African women through digital communities, skill enhancement, and access to capital and opportunities to improve their chances of success in their respective businesses.

The organisation has currently trained more than 2,500 women business owners in East Africa. It is a community of over 5,000 ambitious female professionals who are focused on the advancement of African women through digital communities, skill enhancement, and access to capital to improve their chances of success.

    Appreciation

The four trainees while receiving their certificates, expressed gratitude to the organisers for the opportunity offered them to grow their respective businesses.

They said it was a good learning experience for them and pledged to leverage on the skills acquired to support other women to grow their businesses across the continent.

60 firefighters battle a massive blaze in a block of apartments

Almost 60 firemen battled a sizable fire at a residential building in central London.

Photos from the residential building on Bartholomew Close, Barbican, showed flames shooting out of the window.

An ambulance was on the scene to treat a man who managed to flee the fire before the fire department arrived.

Also, the other residents of the building were evacuated.

To combat the blaze, which damaged portions of two apartments on the third and fourth floors of the building, eight fire engines were stationed nearby.

They were called there just before 4pm, with crews from Soho, East Greenwich, Lambeth and other surrounding areas of the city attending to help the efforts.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) urged people to avoid the streets surrounding the close.

Drones were used to get a sense of the scale of the incident.

Station Commander Steve Howlett, who was at the scene, said: ‘Firefighters worked incredibly hard to ensure everyone was accounted for and there were no remaining hot spots.

‘The brigade’s Drone Team were able to use drones to survey the incident from above and relay images of hard-to-reach areas to incident commanders.’

A statement from the fire service said: ‘Most of a four-roomed flat on the third floor of a residential building was damaged by fire.

‘Part of another flat on the fourth floor was also damaged by the blaze.

‘The brigade’s 999 Control Officers took more than 35 calls to the blaze.’

They added: ‘The cause of the fire is under investigation.’

It comes after a man was killed in a separate flat fire at the Golden Lane Estate in Barbican on Tuesday.

Russia preparing for a new cyber conflict with Ukraine

A Microsoft research analysis suggests that Russian hackers are preparing a fresh round of cyberattacks against Ukraine.

The tech giant’s cyber security research and analysis team revealed a number of findings on Wednesday on the methods used by Russian hackers during the crisis in Ukraine and potential next steps.

“From January 2023, Microsoft has witnessed Russian cyber threat activity shifting to strengthen damaging and intelligence collecting capacity on Ukraine and its partners’ civilian and military assets,” the paper stated.

One group ‘appears to be preparing for a renewed destructive campaign’.

Microsoft found that a particularly sophisticated Russian hacking team, known as Sandworm, was testing ‘additional ransomware-style capabilities that could be used in destructive attacks on organizations outside Ukraine that serve key functions in Ukraine’s supply lines’.

Russian hackers appear to be preparing a renewed wave of cyber attacks against Ukraine, according to a research report by Microsoft (Picture: EPA)

A ransomware attack typically involves hackers penetrating an organization, encrypting their data and extorting them for payment to regain access.

Historically, ransomware has also been used as cover for more malicious cyber activity, including so-called wipers that simply destroy data.

Since January 2022, Microsoft said it had discovered at least nine different wipers and two types of ransomware variants used against more than 100 Ukrainian organizations.

‘In 2023, Russia has stepped up its espionage attacks, targeting organizations in at least 17 European nations, mostly government agencies. Wiper attacks continue in Ukraine.’ said Clint Watts, general manager for Microsoft’s Digital Threat Analysis Center.

These developments have been paired with a growth in more stealthy Russian cyber operations designed to directly compromise organizations in countries allied to Ukraine, according to the report.

Since January 2023, Microsoft has observed Russian cyber threat activity adjusting to boost destructive and intelligence gathering capacity on Ukraine (Picture: AFP)

As of late November 2022, Microsoft and other security firms identified a new form of ransomware, called ‘Sullivan’, deployed against Ukrainian targets, in addition to the ‘Prestige’ ransomware Russia deployed in Ukraine and Poland in October 2022.

‘Our analysis suggests that Russia will continue to conduct espionage attacks against Ukraine and Ukraine’s partners, and destructive attacks within and potentially outside Ukraine as was done with Prestige,’ said Watts.

Moscow has also taken to spreading propaganda aimed at Ukrainian refugees across Europe, trying to convince them that they could be deported and conscripted into the Ukrainian military.

Russian media promoted protests supported by a pro-Russia political party encouraging citizens to demand the government pay for winter energy bills.

Another Russia-aligned campaign called ‘Moldova Leaks’ published alleged leaks from Moldovan politicians, just one of many of hack-and-leak operations aimed at sowing distrust between European citizens and their governments.

The findings come as Russia has been introducing new troops to the battlefield in eastern Ukraine, according to Western security officials.

Ukraine Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov last month warned that Russia could accelerate its military activities surrounding the February 24 anniversary of its invasion.

The Russian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

“Commander Blibo” seeks Supreme Court intervention

Injuncted Eastern Regional Youth Organizer of the NDC Richard Etornam Nyarko alias “Commander Blibo” has filed a Judicial Review Application at the Supreme Court invoking the supervisory jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to quash the ruling of the Koforidua High Court which granted an injunction order against him.

The immediate past Eastern Regional Youth Organizer of the NDC, Emmanuel Okai Minta is challenging in court the regional youth organizer election held on November 11, 2022, at Nsawam which saw his then deputy regional youth organizer, Richard Etornam Nyarko defeat him with 55 votes as against 52 votes he obtained.

According to the plaintiff, the Constituency youth organizers, their deputies and other youth executives making a total of six(6) delegates from Afram Plains South and Atewa West were not eligible to take part in the election because the Functional Executives committee of the party had nullified the elections in the said constituencies in a press release.

That, they ought not to have taken part in the election.

The plaintiff prayed the Koforidua High court to place a perpetual injunction restraining Richard Etornam Nyarko from holding himself as Regional Youth Organizer or any other executive within the Regional executive committee until a fresh election is conducted.

A declaration that Atiwa West and Afram Plains South illegally voted at the youth wing elections held on November 11, 2022, and an order to annul the Eastern Regional Youth wing election by the aforesaid infractions.

In December 2022, the Koforidua High Court presided by His Lordship Nana Yaw Gyamfi Frimpong granted the injunction application against Richard Etornam Nyarko and went on to make a pronouncement that nullified the Eastern Regional Youth Organizer election even though the substantive case is yet to be determined.

The ruling of the court Thursday, December 8, 2022, came less than 48 hours before the national youth organizer conference of the NDC held in Cape Coast in the Central Region on Saturday, December 10, 2022.

The Judicial Review Application filed at the Supreme Court by Richard Etornam Nyarko is intended to quash the ruling of the High Court in Koforidua claiming the judge erred when it proceeded to grant almost all the reliefs endorsed on the writ of summons when he was granting the injunction application which is something that is considered to be prejudicial because until the court case has been fully heard by the court, the High Court had no jurisdiction to decide the matter and deliver the ruling against him in the manner that the court did.

Richard Etornam Nyarko in his Affidavit in Support of the Application invoking the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court says that the Koforidua High court did not have the jurisdiction to do what it did for which reason the Supreme Court should bring up the order and quash it.

He is also asking the Supreme Court to transfer the case to a different judge because having determined the matter, the High Court in Koforidua cannot be made to sit on the case again.

Richard Etornam Nyarko is therefore seeking an Order of Certiorari and Prohibition from the Supreme Court against the High Court in Koforidua to quash the Ruling and Order of the High Court and to Prohibit the High Court Judge from sitting on the case.

His Legal team headed by Lawyer Isaac Minta Larbi of Okore Chambers, in Koforidua- Adweso, and also Chairman of the NDC Legal Team, Eastern Region is confident in the competence of his client’s application.

American rapper 50 Cent joked about his plans to seize a former employee’s assets including his home after he won the $6.2 million lawsuit against him.

In a post on Instagram, Fif reposted reports that he will seize the assets of former Le Chemin du Roi champagne employee Mitchell Green and revealed what he plans to do with his home.

“I think I’m gonna put Epoxy floors in this place,” he wrote in the caption alongside a screenshot of an article about the seizure, and an apparent photo of Green. “I’m gonna keep it and his family pictures around, you know as a theme for the place. LOL.”

50 Cent’s post comes not long after Green was found guilty of embezzling over $2 million from the champagne company, which was launched by Fif’s brand Sire Spirits in 2019.

Green supposedly up-charged wholesalers and said they were “agency fees,” but just pocketed the extra money himself.

He has been ordered to pay over $6 million back, which includes pre-judgment interest, attorney’s fees, arbitrator compensation, and other fees. If he refuses to pay, 50 Cent can seize his personal property and other assets.

“Look I’m a need that by Monday!” joked 50 Cent when the verdict first came in.

The case isn’t the first time people have owed the rapper and Power producer money following court proceedings. Back in 2018, he was sued by Teairra Mia for revenge porn, but she ultimately lost the case and was ordered to pay him $40,000 in legal fees.

Kejetia Market fire: We are overwhelmed at the magnitude of the fire – Fire Service

Assistant Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Timothy Osafo Affum, has expressed shock at the magnitude of the recent fire that gutted the Kejietia Market in the Ashanti Region.

According to him, the necessary security protocols were put in place in the newly constructed market. However, most traders violated the policies and arrangements proposed after the facility was approved to start business.

“We were surprised at the magnitude of the outbreak, especially since it was a modern facility where some things would have been put into order.”

In an interview on Happy 98.9 FM’s “Epa Hoa Daben” socio-political talk show with Sefah Danquah, he indicated that reports on faulty fire detectors in the facility are not factual.

He disclosed that after the fire was put out, the smoke detectors were still sounding alarms. He added that the GNFS is not sure about the complaints and what people are talking about, but their investigations are ongoing.

“Our observations indicated that people there at the time tried to put out the fire, but it got out of control before they decided to sound the alarm for others to move out,” he said.

He revealed that the GNFS is currently searching for the shop owner where the fire started, and they will move steadily from there. He urged the public to exercise caution and follow the necessary safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Kejetia market fire outbreak occurred on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, and destroyed several shops and goods worth millions of Ghana cedis. The fire service managed to bring the fire under control after several hours of battling it. No casualties were recorded.
