Two Ghanaian senior high school graduates have clinched the first and second positions in the best student rankings for the 2022 West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Exam (WASSCE).
Alex Opoku Manu and Benjamin Eyram Nana Kwame Degbey respectively from St. James Seminary SHS beat competition from Nigeria’s Ogidigbo Chioma Blessing who settled for third place.
Though this was revealed earlier this year, the graduates received their awards at the 71st Annual Council Meeting of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) held in Gambia.
The students were honoured for their remarkable performance out of the five countries that took the examination.
Ghana Education Service (GES) lauded the boys for their achievement in a post on Facebook.
GES Director-General, Dr Eric Nkansah joined Ghana’s delegation in The Gambia together with Headmaster of Opoku Ware School, Father Owusu Sekyere.
The honoured duo also represented St James Seminary at the 2022 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ).
Alex and Eyram then beat GHANASS and Kumasi Sec Tech with an impressive 44 points in the quarterfinals.
The boys then faced contest favourites Presec Legon and Kumasi High School in the semi-finals where they exited after a fierce battle.
Following their feat in the 2022 WASSCE, Alex Opoku Manu is reading medicine at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
Benjamin Eyram Degbey is also studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Academic City.
According to her, even though her life is still evolving, she is very fulfilled by how far she has come and celebrates that every day.
“I feel blessed and extremely fulfilled. My life is changing every day and for me I celebrate it, I celebrate the fact that I’m growing every day,” she said.
Serwaa Amihere’s struggles and obstacles on her journey to success
Just like all other success stories, Serwaa has not come this far on a silver platter. She has had to deal with many setbacks and obstacles.
She noted that she still encounters many problems but has learnt not to dwell on them.
“I still encounter many obstacles but I don’t really like to dwell on them. I keep learning every day and I’m learning more to focus,” she said.
Serwaa Amihere lives without regrets
American author L. Ron Hubbard once said, “never regret yesterday. Life is in you today, and you make your tomorrow.”
Serwaa Amihere seems to agree with Hubbard as she lives her life without any regrets. For her, every misfortune is an opportunity to learn something new.
“I’ve no regrets, I just take lessons from every situation.”
Serwaa Amihere’s philanthropy
Aside from excelling in her career, Serwaa is also a philanthropist. Through her Serwaa Amihere Foundation, she often gives back to society.
Touching on her motivations for her philanthropy, Serwaa noted that she believed that giving makes God show her mercy.
“I believe in giving. I like to be the reason people are happy and smiling. Makes my heart glad. I believe all these allow God to have mercy on me,” she said.

At the opening of discussions with Xi Jinping at the Kremlin,Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed China’s proposal to resolve the “acute crisis” in Ukraine.
The Chinese leader met with Mr. Putin as he arrived in Moscow for a high-profile visit the following days.
The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Mr. Putin last week, but the president disobeyed it by traveling to Crimea and Mariupol over the weekend.
Observers have argued that the fighting in Ukraine has made Russia increasingly dependent on China for support as the country becomes isolated from the West.

President Vladimir Putin was not waiting at the end of the red carpet to greet Chinese leader Xi Jinping when he arrived in Russia for a high-profile visit on Monday, but it was not a snub.
Mr Putin, meanwhile, was far away in central Moscow, busy with other commitments before his high-stakes dinner with the Chinese leader later this evening.
He began his day by making an appearance at a meeting of the Interior Ministry’s top officials, and also addressed a parliamentary conference involving politicians from African nations.
At the airport, Mr Xi listened as a Russian military band played the national anthems of China and Russia. He then walked past a line of honorary guards accompanied by Mr Chernyshenko.
The Russian leader earlier showered his Chinese guest with praise in an article published in China’s top People’s Daily newspaper.
He described Mr Xi’s visit as a ‘landmark event’, saying it offers a ‘great opportunity for me to meet with my good old friend with whom we enjoy the warmest relationship’.
He also wrote in detail about their first meeting in 2010, adding that he and Mr Xi have met about 40 times and citing a line from Chinese philosopher Confucius: ‘Is it not a joy to have friends coming from afar!’
After Monday’s private dinner, Mr Putin and Mr Xi will hold official talks on Tuesday that will also be attended by top officials from both countries.
They are expected to issue conclusive statements after the negotiations.

Analysts say that Western sanctions have made Russia increasingly reliant on China.
Alexander Gabuev a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment who has long studied Russia-China ties said ‘This relationship is increasingly asymmetrical – China has much more leverage.’
He noted that Mr Xi could be expected to maintain strong support for Mr Putin amid mounting Western pressure.
He said: ‘The reality is that China sees absolutely no upsides in dumping Vladimir Putin, because there will be no incentives or no points earned in the relationship with the US.’
While others say that Beijing will be unlikely to offer Moscow military assistance as the US and other Western allies fear, the alliance with Beijing would allow the Russian leader to pursue his course in Ukraine.
Mr Putin also spoke today and said that deepening ties between Russia and Africa was a key goal for the Kremlin, as Moscow seeks to expand its influence on the continent.
He added that Russia would continue supplying the continent with grain if Moscow exits a landmark agreement with Ukraine to allow exports from the country’s Black Sea ports.
Putin said: ‘Let me emphasise that our country has always given — and will continue to give — priority to cooperation with African states.’
‘If we decide not to extend this deal after 60 days, then we are ready to supply free of charge the volumes that were sent to the countries most in need in Africa.’
The new offer which was also improved with the new money was made following the most recent strike action in January and the threat of more action.
Key features of the offer include an uplift on salaries of between 14.4 percent for the lowest paid grades to 9.2 percent for the highest paid.
It also includes a total uplift on basic earnings between 15.2 percent for the lowest-paid grades to 10.3 percent for the highest-paid grades.
There will also be increased backpay, and there will be a renewal of the no compulsory redundancy agreement until January 2025.
Network Rail withdrew their previous because the offer was conditional on RMT accepting the company’s ‘modernising maintenance’ agenda, which the union will continue to scrutinize and challenge including on safety.
There will also be discounted rail travel benefits.
RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said that when the union first declared the dispute with Network Rail a year ago in the Spring of 2022, RMT was told that Network Rail workers would only get two percent to three percent.
Mr Lynch said today: ‘However, since then strike action and the inspiring solidarity and determination of members has secured new money and a new offer which has been clearly accepted by our members and that dispute is now over.
‘Our dispute with the Train Operating Companies remains firmly on and our members recent highly effective strike action across the fourteen train companies has shown their determination to secure a better deal.
‘If the government now allows the train companies to make the right offer, we can then put that to our members but until then the strike action scheduled for March 30 and April 1 will take place.
After being shot “several times” in the back and legs on a Rotherham street, a guy is now in critical condition.
Following the incident, according to police, a 21-year-old male was detained on suspicion of trying to kill someone.
At after 2:30 yesterday, police were summoned to Winifred Street in the South Yorkshire town.
They found the man, who is in his twenties, with wounds to his back and legs which were described as ‘consistent with a guns discharged’.
He was transported by ambulance to the hospital, where he is still in a serious condition.
Investigating Officer Detective Sergeant Janine Broughton said: ‘We are aware that an incident of this nature will be concerning to our communities and local residents within the area.
‘We have an increased police presence in the area while officers conduct their enquiries and I urge you to speak to the them if you have any concerns. They are there to help you.
‘Our investigation is in its early stages, we have already made one arrest, a 21 year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder and I offer my reassurance that officers and detectives are working hard to find those responsible.’
She said the force wanted to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and may have dashcam footage or additional information.

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Ernest Addison, has urged the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) to explore the possibility of helping rural and community banks (RCBs) to list on the stock market.
Dr Addison said the GSE’s Ghana Alternative Market (GAM) was an avenue for patient capital and the RCBs could leverage the platform to access funds for expansion.
He, therefore, advised the GSE to collaborate with the ARB Apex Bank Limited, the mini central bank for the community-based lenders, on how best they can support the institutions to float shares in return for long-term capital.
Dr Addison made the call when the Managing Director of the GSE, Abena Amoah, led a five-member delegation from the bourse to pay a courtesy call on him.
The meeting was for Ms Abena Amoah, who was appointed the first female of the GSE in November last year, to introduce herself to the central bank’s management.
The Managing Director (MD) of the GSE was accompanied by the acting Deputy MD, Frank Berle; the Head of the Ghana Fixed Income Market, Augustine Simons; the Head of Strategy & International Relations, Diana Okine and the Head of Marketing & Public Relations, Jerry Boachie-Danquah.
The BoG Governor received the delegation in the company of the First Deputy Governor, Dr Maxwell Opoku-Afari, and some directors of the bank’s departments.
The BoG Governor, congratulated Ms Amoah on her appointment and further expressed confidence in her ability to ensure a seamless transition from her predecessor, given her experience in the sector.
Dr Addison said the outlook for the economy remained positive and urged the GSE management to continue to work with relevant stakeholders to help create a robust economy to help improve the fortunes of the market.
He noted that the DDEP that was concluded in January was to facilitate a fiscal consolidation exercise meant to achieve macroeconomic stability and sustainable growth.
The Governor further stated that the private sector had a key role to play in the transformation of the economy and that private sector investment must lead with the state providing an enabling environment.
For her part, Ms Amoah expressed delight about the warm reception and commended the Governor for his leadership, which she said had positively impacted the financial sector.
On the stock exchange, the MD indicated that although the Ghana Composite Index declined by 13 per cent last year, the market recorded its largest trading value of about GH¢1.3 billion.
This, she said, was attributed to MTN Ghana floating more of its shares on the stock exchange.
The MD added that about GH¢230 billion was traded in fixed income market.
She informed the governor that in 2022, GSE was admitted as a full member of the World Federation of Stock Exchangers, placing the Accra bourse at par with the major players in the global stock exchange space.
Impact of DDEP
Ms Amoah said the DDEP, which was undertaken by the government as a condition precedent to the country’s entry into the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme, had eroded investor confidence in the country.
To bolster investor confidence, the MD highlighted the need for increased financial literacy engagements, availability of sufficient investment information and the diversification of products on the market.
On the foreign exchange market, Ms Amoah said it was the intention of GSE to liaise with the central bank and other stakeholders to form a committee for the formalisation of the foreign exchange market.

Failure of Parliament to settle an outstanding debt of GHS13 million debt it owes the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) may lead to the disconnection of the House from the National Grid.
In view of this, Parliament is currently in discussion with officials from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) over the debt.
The outcome of this discussion will determine whether the House stays connected to the national grid or is plunged into darkness.
A disconnection team is at the premises as the negotiations proceed.
This forms part of the Company’s bid to retrieve a total of about GH¢5.7 billion in unpaid bills across the country.
Parliament is advancing talks to pay GH¢1 million upfront out of its GH¢13 million debt in order to keep the lights on for now.
“It looks like Parliament is offering some GH¢1 million upfront to prevent the disconnection but the ECG will have none of that,” JoyNews’ James Avedzi said on the Midday News.
The ECG on March 14, disconnected the power supply to the Energy Ministry which plunged the entire Ministry into darkness for almost half a day.
According to the sources, power was, however, restored to the Ministry after it paid its debt bill in full.
The power distributor will from Monday, March 20, embark on a massive disconnection exercise in a bid to mobilise revenue.
The exercise is using almost all ECG staff from top management to junior officers to retrieve all the monies owed to them.
The Managing Director of ECG, Samuel Dubik Mahama, said the company is owed over GH¢5 billion from the month of September 2022 to February 2023.
He added that the agencies that would refuse to settle their bill immediately will face the same consequence as the Energy Ministry.
Pollster and Managing Editor of the Dispatch Newspaper, Ben Ephson, has stated that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is likely to emerge as the preferred candidate to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He says the Vice president Mahamudu Bawumia stands a high chance of becoming the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
His comment comes at the back of the Vice president’s visit to Akwasidae at Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Sunday, March 19, 2023. Where over 80 lawmakers, government appointees and some stakeholders who matter within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) accompanied him to the event.
Ben Epson said this move witnessed, sends a strong message.
“Human head is not a coconut to see inside and I believe that the various delegates will vote in secret and the delegation I think was to send a message because you need to bear in mind that many of the Members of Parliament of the NPP will be seeking reelection.
“For your chances in seeking reelection many of the delegates that will vote for you as the Member of Parliament to remain in Parliament you will ensure that people who will obey you are people you have handpicked and elected. So it is likely that many of the MPs have handpicked those they can control to vote for them to remain in power,” the Pollster stated.
He continued: “So it is meant to send a signal and I am waiting for the date of the flag bearer ship of the NPP to be announced and I will conclude my seventh book on elections. But I have done some work before the election of the executives and post-election of the executives.
“I can reveal exclusively on your program that I think that Bawumia is in the lead in terms of possibly winning the NPP flag bearer ship race,” starrfmonline.com.gh quoted Ben Ephson.
Mr. Ephson added that there is a high change Dr Bawumia will poll over 60 per cent voted in the NPP’s flagbearer race.
Vice-Chancellor of the Kumasi Technical University has lamented inadequate staff at the Kumasi Technical University.
Professor Osei-Wusu Achaw says the situation is having a toll on the quality of education at the institution and thus called on the government to consider lifting a ban on employment in the public sector and allow universities to employ staff.
The freeze on employment in the public sector is making it difficult for public institutions including universities to expand their workforce to cater for the gaps in delivering their mandate.
The Vice-Chancellor who spoke during the 19th Congregation of the Kumasi Technical University said “the current staff-to-student ratio does not match the standards set by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.”
Member of Parliament for Asawase Constituency, Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has noted that he will not rescind his decision to sue some National Democratic Congress (NDC) branch executives in his constituency until they withdraw their libelous allegations.
The allegations made against him claimed that he owned 15 shops in the newly-built Asawase Market.
Mr. Muntaka has filed a defamation suit demanding GH¢10 million in damages against the 11 branch executives involved in publishing and circulating the allegations.
Former President John Dramani Mahama visited the Constituency on Saturday, March 18, to begin his three-day campaign for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Primary.
During the rally, Mr. Mahama urged all warring factions to reconcile and seek peace.
Following the rally, Mr. Muntaka told TV3 that he would not withdraw his lawsuit despite calls for peace.
He said the issues must be addressed to prevent any future issues during the NDC and New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary contest.
“Obviously, if they want that, they will have to retract what they said because you cannot make those kinds of allegations,” he said.
“Remember, beyond the primaries we have a contest with the NPP and if I don’t fight it now and they start to quote my own people, what do I have to say?”
Despite efforts made by national executives to resolve the issue, some executives have put resources together to pick nomination forms for a rival candidate, Mubarak Masawudu.

The Ghana Police Service will soon commence investigations into allegations by a former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, concerning the engagement of some New Patriotic Party (NPP) bigwigs in illegal mining activities, popularly known as “galamsey,” as directed by President Akufo-Addo.
The President gave the directive last week, and Daily Graphic checks indicate that the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has commenced investigations into the matter.
Allegations
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, in a recent interview with the state broadcaster, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), alleged that some officials of the ruling government were involved in galamsey.
He claimed that the alleged missing excavators story was used against him by his own party and other government officials involved in galamsey as a weapon to remove him from office.
He alleged that the loss of his position paved the way for some bigwigs in the ruling NPP to continue their galamsey activities.
The excavators were seized from galamsey operators at various points across the country.
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng claimed in the interview that allegations concerning the loss of some 500 excavators seized from persons engaged in illegal mining in 2020 were untrue, adding that the stories were made up by some persons in government to tarnish his reputation in order to chase him out of office.
During the interview on GBC, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said: “There was an orchestration within the party and the government to get me out, and when I left, galamsey activities increased. Now things are coming up and we know those who are doing galamsey, even within the party and even people at the Jubilee House.”
He disclosed that the very actions of military personnel deployed to effect the arrest of illegal miners triggered the entire falsehood about him being responsible for the missing excavators at the time.
“The true story is that at the start of Operation Vanguard, the soldiers were supposed to arrest the excavators, but they went into the forest, removed the control boards of the excavators and came back to report. But when they went away, the owners went with different control boards and moved the excavators away,” he said.
Following his interview, a number of people and groups, including the Minority in Parliament, have called for investigations into the allegations made.
Investigations commenced
A highly placed source in the police told the Daily Graphic that last week the CID commenced investigations into the issues raised by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng.
According to the source, the police had dispatched a letter to Prof Frimpong-Boateng to assist the police in their investigations.
I’ll co-operate
However, when contacted yesterday, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng told the Daily Graphic that he had not received any letter from the police on the matter.
Nevertheless, he said, he would co-operate fully with any investigations into the matter if he was approached
Calls for probe
Last Friday, the Minority in Parliament called for investigations into the galamsey claims made by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng.
The Ranking Member on the Lands and Forestry Committee, Dr Rashid Pelpuo, told journalists that the allegations were grave and must be probed.
“We have reports of key government officials being key galamsey operators involved in destroying lands in forest reserves. We wish to call on the government to investigate the allegations made by the former Minister of Environment. It is also our expectation that the government must desist from joining illegal immigrants engaged in galamsey because today most of the lands destroyed have not been restored,” he said.
Ahead of the call by the Minority, the Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr Clement Apaak, had called for a probe into the allegations.
The MP, in a statement, appealed to the state security agencies, such as the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) and the CID to investigate the matter.
He added that such allegations could not be swept under the carpet, and that investigations must be done to bring the perpetrators to book.
“Ghanaians expect the requisite state agencies/institutions (OSP, BNI, CID) to show loyalty to Ghana by initiating investigations into the allegations made by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng. Given his stature and previous position in this NPP government, these allegations cannot and must not be ignored,” he added.
Nollywood actress and politician, Funke Akindeleunfollowed her estranged husband JJC Skillz on Instagram a few hours after her party lost the governorship elections.
Checks on the actress’ Instagram page reveal that Funke has now unfollowed her former husband.
Recall that JJC Skillz made the headlines some weeks back when it was speculated that he had had a secret marriage ceremony.
Even though they have parted ways, their formal divorce is yet to be made public.
Donald Trump, a former US president, asserts that he will be detained on Tuesday.
On social media, he made no mention of how he was made aware of the impending arrest.
According to “illegal leaks” from the Manhattan district attorney’s office, “THE FAR & AWAY LEADING REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE & FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WILL BE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK,” will be detained on that day next week, he claimed in a post on his Truth Social network.
Mr Trump also urged his followers to protest.
The post comes as a New York prosecutor eyes charges in a case examining hush money paid to women who alleged sexual encounters with him.
Law enforcement officials in New York have been making security preparations for the possibility that the former President could be indicted.
There has been no public announcement of any time frame for the grand jury’s secret work in the case, including any potential vote on whether to indict the ex-president.
In his postings, he repeated his lies that the 2020 presidential election he lost to Democrat Joe Biden was stolen and he urged his followers to ‘PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK!’
He did not provide any details on social media about how he knew about the expected arrest.
That language evoked the message from the then-president that preceded the riot at the US Capitol on January 6 2021.
The grand jury in Manhattan has been hearing from witnesses, including former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, who says he orchestrated payments in 2016 to two women to silence them about sexual encounters they said they had with Mr Trump a decade earlier.
The former president denies the encounters occurred, says he did nothing wrong and has cast the investigation as a ‘witch hunt’ by a Democratic prosecutor bent on sabotaging the Republican’s 2024 presidential campaign.
Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg’s office has apparently been examining whether any state laws were broken in connection with the payments or the way Mr Trump’s company compensated Mr Cohen for his work to keep the women’s allegations quiet.
Yesterday, Trump went live with his first Facebook post since 2021.
‘I’M BACK!’ he wrote in the post on Friday afternoon.
It was accompanied by a 12-second 2024 Trump campaign video.
‘Sorry to keep you waiting, complicated business, complicated business,’ Trump said in the clip when he addressed a New York City watch party after defeating Hillary Clinton and winning the 2016 presidential election.
His post came more than a month after Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, restored his accounts.
Trump has 34million followers on his Facebook page. Friday’s post is a clear indication that Trump intends to use Facebook as a mechanism in his 2024 presidential campaign, which he announced in November.
The 45th president had been sticking to posting on his own Truth Social platform, despite having his Meta accounts restored and his Twitter account reinstated in November following Elon Musk’s takeover.
The Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has charged the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to disconnect power of every public institution in the country including that of the Ministry of Energy if they default in the payments of their electricity bills, Purefmonline.com reports.
Speaking on Kumasi-based Pure FM in an exclusive interview with Kwame Adinkrah on March 20, 2023, the Energy Minister who doubles as MP for Manhyia South remarked that in principle, charity begins at home so if the Energy Ministry defaults in the payments of their bills, the ECG should without any form of hesitation disconnect their power.
However, he explained that the reports on social media indicating his outfit suffering a disconnection exercise from its agency, ECG, over alleged unpaid electricity bills were untrue.
Napo stated in his explanation that his Ministry runs on prepaid meters so it would be impossible for the ECG to disconnect them from the grid.
“We only had prepaid challenges of which on the contrary the ECG intervened to restore power for us.
The ECG should disconnect the Energy Ministry’s power and that of any public institution should they at any point default in making payments for their utility bills.
Kwame, the Ministry of Energy is no exemption from this principle should it come to that.
The ECG must not relent in its effort to recover monies owed them either by private institutions, individuals or state agencies,” Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh charged.
Background
It was reported that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on Tuesday, March 14, disconnected power supply to the Energy Ministry which plunged the entire Ministry into darkness for almost half a day.
On the ninth anniversary of his illegitimate takeover of the Ukrainian peninsula, Putin defies the West and travels to Crimea.
Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, paid a visit to Mariupol, a Ukrainian city that has been occupied, on his first trip since an arrest warrant was issued.
Russian news agencies said that he was in the city which became a worldwide symbol of defiance after outgunned and outmanned Ukrainian forces held out in a steel mill there for nearly three months.
It was eventually taken over by the Kremlin in May.
Yesterday Putin travelled to Crimea, a short distance south-west of Mariupol, to mark the ninth anniversary of the Black Sea peninsula’s annexation from Ukraine.
The Russian President visited the city today (Picture: ZvezdaNews/e2w)
The visits came days after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for the Russian leader accusing him of war crimes.
Mr Putin arrived in Mariupol by helicopter and then drove himself around the city’s ‘memorial sites’, concert hall and coastline.
They said Mr Putin also met with residents in the city’s Nevskyi district.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnulin made clear that Russia is in Mariupol to stay.
He said the government hopes to finish the reconstruction of its damaged city centre by the end of the year.
He said: ‘People have started to return. When they saw that reconstruction is underway, people started actively returning.’
When Moscow fully captured the city in May, an estimated 100,000 people remained out of a pre-war population of 450,000. Many were trapped without food, water, heat, or electricity.
Putin made the unannounced visit just days after a warrant for his arrest was issued.
Relentless bombardment left rows upon rows of shattered or hollowed-out buildings.
Mariupol’s plight first came into focus with a Russian air strike on a maternity hospital in March last year, less than two weeks after Kremlin troops moved into Ukraine.
A week later, about 300 people were reported killed in the bombing of a theatre that was serving as the city’s largest bomb shelter.
Evidence obtained by the AP last spring suggested that the real death toll could be closer to 600.
A small group of Ukrainian fighters held out for 83 days in the sprawling Azovstal steelworks in eastern Mariupol before surrendering, their dogged defence tying down Russian forces and coming to symbolise Ukrainian tenacity in the face of Moscow’s aggression.
Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, a move that most of the world denounced as illegal, and moved on last September to officially claim four regions in Ukraine’s south and east as Russian territory, following referendums that Kyiv and the West described as a sham.
The Pro-Vice Chancellor of Ghana Telecom University, Professor Robert Hinson, has said that building the right customer experience will be critical in ensuring the sustainability of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).
According to him, little attention has been devoted to proper marketing and the right customer experience culture in the bid to promote the Intra-African trade.
He made this call on Joy Business Social, a weekly podcast show which discusses pertinent issues on the business landscape.
“I hear about AfCFTA, about expansions in the African market. So my question is, what is the role of marketing and service excellence in AfCFTA?” he quizzed.
According to him, failure to build a resilient customer experience routine could lead to the collapse of many Small and Medium Scale Enterprises, thus affecting the AfCFTA agenda.
“If you have no standard operating procedures, no service level agreements, no corporate values, you will not be competitive. Again, if you do not build service routines in your SMEs, you are doomed to fail”.
He furthered that building the right structures to sustain a cordial relationship with customers and keeping them happy will be key in guarantying the growth of businesses and facilitating smooth intra-African trade.
“This is because if you can’t keep your customers happy, they will cease to spend with you. This will make you less profitable and eventually lead to the collapse of the business”, he added.
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is a trade initiative designed to create a single market for goods, and services, facilitated by the movement of persons in order to deepen the economic integration of the African continent and in accordance with the Pan-African Vision of An integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa.
The North launched an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan on Thursday, and it was later revealed that the missile was a Hwasong-17.
Known as the country’s ‘monster missile’, it is the world’s largest road-mobile, liquid-fuelled ICBM.
It was tested just hours before the South Korean president Yook Suk-yeol was due to fly to Tokyo for discussions with Fumio Kishida, the prime minister of Japan.
Both united at the summit partly aimed at rebuilding security ties between the US allies in the face of North Korean nuclear threats.
State media quoted leader Kim Jong Un as saying Thursday’s launch was meant to ‘strike fear into the enemies’.
Kim Jong Un (C) and his daughter (L) watched on as the warhead missile was set off.The lauch over the weekend simulated a nuclear attack against South Korea.North Korea confirmed the launch of their Hwasong-17 missile a few days after it was detected by South Korea and Japan.
The ramping-up of testing activities comes as the US and South Korea carry out the biggest military drills of their kind in years.
In response to the latest launch, the South said the drills would continue as it maintains a readiness to ‘overwhelmingly’ respond to any provocation by North Korea.
The Biden administration wants better South Korea-Japan ties, which declined over historical issues in recent years, as it pushes to strengthen its alliance network in Asia to counter the North Korean nuclear threat and China’s rising influence.
On Sunday, the US flew at least one long-range B-1B bomber for joint aerial training with warplanes from South Korea.
The latest launch comes as the US and South Korea press ahead with the biggest military drills for years.According to local news reports, the US and South Korea plan more training involving an American aircraft carrier later this month after their current exercises end.
The use of the aircraft, which is capable of carrying a huge conventional weapons payload, has previously also been met with responsive missile test-launches from the North.
Toshiro Ino, the Japanese deputy defence minister, said there was no reports of damage from Sunday’s test launch as it landed outside the country’s exclusive economic zone.
However, he said the activity represented a ‘threat’ to the security of Japan, the region, and the international community and it ‘absolutely cannot be tolerated’.
The missile likely showed an irregular trajectory, he said, which could be a reference to North Korea’s highly manoeuvrable, nuclear-capable KN-23 missile.
The US Indo-Pacific Command said the launch does not pose an immediate threat to American territory or its allies, but highlighted ‘the destabilising impact of [North Korea’s] unlawful’ weapons programmes.
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) monitoring team has recovered more than ¢85 million in revenue shortfall from businesses for the state within the first five months of 2023.
The aggressiveness of the monitoring team divided into groups significantly impacted revenue mobilisation between October 2022 and February 2023.
Four teams were inaugurated in October 2022 to undertake risk-based and intelligence-driven operations across the country.
The teams which are grouped as Tema, Eastern Frontier based at Dabala, Western Frontier based in Kumasi and Vehicle Taskforce which operates nationwide have also arrested some unaccustomed goods. They also carried out other related assignments which involves the interception of substances suspected to be Indian hemp, among others.
Speaking to Journalists about the development, Commissioner of Customs, Alhaji Seidu Iddrisu Iddisah, cautioned that the team will not compromise on any unethical exercise by any importer or trader against the country’s customs laws.
According to him, the recoveries made by the team will go a long way to impact on the revenue drive of the state as well as ensure that security of the country is intact.
“As you know, Customs is supposed to be at all the entry points to ensure that goods that come into the country meet the security and health needs of the people; and the country has laws to deal with the importation of items as well as the payment of right duties to the state which is used as an economic tool”.
“We have layers of enforcement and one of them is the establishment of the monitoring teams that operates at certain strategic areas to ensure that if one is able to dodge from the entry points, these teams will be able to apprehend them for the right amount of duties and customs processes to be done”, he added.
On the concerns of some team members harassing innocent traders at some country’s borders, the Commissioner admitted that such complaints have been made in the public domain but without any concrete evidence.
“We have always encouraged people to come out with evidence of our team members harassing individuals or any form of corruption so that we can investigate and deal with the officers involved.”, he mentioned.
“We have code of ethics and conducts. When it is breached, the necessary sanctions are applied accordingly” he asserted.
The authority advised the general public to cooperate with the monitoring teams, assuring that the teams will discharge their duties with the highest professional standards.
The Western Frontier Team has also recovered a total short collection of ₵1,466,797.57
Again, the Vehicle Taskforce (Nationwide) intercepted and detained 193 unaccustomed vehicles in the last quarter of 2022 and 80 vehicles between January and February 2023.
National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer hopeful, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, has hinted at filing his nomination on Thursday, March 23, 2023.
Contained in a statement signed by the Spokesperson for the former Minister of Finance, Antonio Edem Asinyo, it said that Dr. Duffuor will file the forms at the NDC’s headquarters in Accra.
“Aspiring Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Kwabena Duffuor will be submitting his nomination to contest the flagbearer election at the Party HQ on Thursday, 23rd day of March 2023 at 11:00am,” the statement said.
Also, the statement said that the initial date of Wednesday, March 22, was changed due to a request from the national executives of the party.
This, he explained, is due to the fact that on that initial date, the NDC’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, is set to present what the party has termed the True State of the Nation Address.
“The change in date from Wednesday to Thursday is in response to a request from the National Executive of the party to reschedule, due to the party’s True State of the Nation Address to be delivered by the Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia today, Monday at the UPSA auditorium at 2pm,” he added.
The Duffuor camp has since urged members of the party to be present at the event, adding that their candidate will also be present.
On a Mediterranean shore, researchers found the earliest instance of a tiny biting insect.
The preserved fossil was discovered on the island of Mallorca and depicts a gnat larva that traveled across the ground about 247 million years ago, before the continents started to form.
The creature’s skull and digestive system can be seen, and researchers can even determine how it breathed.
It outdates the previous record-holding gnat, discovered in France, by several million years.
The insects are part of a class of creatures known as dipterans, which also includes midges and mosquitoes.
Scientists believe the latest find could hold the key to revealing how life recovered from the Earth’s biggest ever mass extinction, which wiped out 95% of all species around 250 million years ago.
He said: ‘We have been able to look at some of the adaptations by the first dipterans to the post-apocalyptic environment at the beginning of the Triassic, for instance, a breathing system that is still found in different groups of insects today.’
Researchers were excited to see the preserved external breathing structures (or spiracles) of the fossil (Picture: CN-IGME CSIC/SWNS)
The larva has been named after Josep Juárez, the man who discovered it during a palaeontological survey in the area near the small harbour of Estellencs at the northeast of Mallorca.
It will be called Protoanisolarva juarezi, or ‘Juárez’s ancestral anisopodoid larva’.
The first author on the study is Dr Enrique Peñalver, who works for the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at the Spanish Geological Survey (CN-IGME).
He said: ‘While I was inspecting it under the microscope, I put a drop of alcohol on it to increase the contrast of the structures, and I was able to witness in awe how the fossil had preserved both the external and internal structures of the head, some parts of the digestive system, and, most importantly, the external openings to its respiratory system, or spiracles.’
Last month, the oldest example of a well-preserved vertebrate brain was found in the head of a 319 million-year-old fish that was pulled out of an English coal mine around a century ago.
A flagbearer hopeful of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, will cement his decision to contest in the parties upcoming primaries and subsequent national elections with the filing of his nomination.
He is expected to file his nomination to contest the May 13th, 2023, primaries on Tuesday at 1.00 pm.
The filing was scheduled for Monday, March 20, but has been postponed due to a presentation by the party on the True State of the Nation Address on Monday.
In a release by the John Mahama Campaign team it stated, “very sorry for the postponement, which is in response to a request from the party to reschedule because of the presentation of the party’s True State of the Nation Address on Monday.”
Mr. Mahama will however continue his first phase tour of the Ashanti Region, which ends today, a statement by the aide to the former President, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, said.
Two weeks after president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo delivered the State of the Nationa Address (SoNA) to the nation through Parliament, the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to present the ‘true’ SoNA today.
The widely advertised event is slated for the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA). The address will be delivered by the Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.
The address is expected to point out areas of misgovernance and to counter some of the claims that the president made during the SoNA.
A young girl has unfortunately passed away, and we’ll be doing everything we can to support her family during this extraordinarily trying time, said PC Gail Arnold.
‘We’re working to establish the circumstances behind the collision and we’re keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time, and especially anyone with dash cam footage.’
Interest rates fell once again as government Treasury bills were oversubscribed by about 40.3% to the tune of ¢3.89 billion.
According to the auctioning results by the Bank of Ghana, demand for the 91-day T-bill was very high, pushing the yield down.
Following the successful completion of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, interest rates on the money market have witnessed a significant fall. From a high of 35%, the rates have eased to about 20% on average.
The yield on the 91-day bill fell by 0.52% to 18.52%.
At the same time, the 182-day rate also declined to 21.27%, from 22.84% the previous week.
Meanwhile, the government accepted ¢3.87 billion of the total bids submitted.
A chunk of the bids, however, came from the 91-day T-bill as ¢2.90 billion was accepted.
For the 182-day bill, the bids submitted were estimated at ¢983.7 million. But ¢972.4 million was accepted.
As per reports, a rich friend of the Duchess of York is being sued in the US for allegedly funding a sex trafficking organization.
Trammell Crow, 72, with whom Sarah Ferguson allegedly struck up a connection, is charged with funding the operation that resulted in the assault of two women.
The court documents submitted in California accuse the £6 billion Texas tycoon of a number of allegations.
The lawsuit was filed by two women, Julia Hubbard and Kayla Goedinghaus against Mr Crow and his associates in a court in November, it has been reported.

They claimed that the ring was run by a man called Richard Hubbard with the ‘with the essential financial assistance and influence’ of Mr Crow.
The Duchess, 63, and Mr Crow are said to have bonded over their shared interest in environmental issues – their friendship was first reported at the beginning of the month.
The lawsuit claims that Mr Hubbard used ‘force, threats of force, fraud, or coercion to compel Hubbard and Goedinghaus to engage in commercial sex acts’.
The case was filed under laws governing racketeering and it claims that the defendants ‘conspired together’ to commit offences including human trafficking.
The women claim that Mr Hubbard forced the alleged victims to take drugs like Xanax ‘in order to force them to participate in sex acts’.
It is alleged that Mr Crow was ‘key to the venture’s existence and long-running success’ as he invested in it.
The lawsuit states: ‘Crow maintained what he called lingerie rooms in each property he owned in which he kept a variety of lingerie for female guests to wear, as well as what he called ‘stripper shoes’.’
Mr Crow is accused of using his ‘financial assistance and influence’ in the ring. The Texan tycoon is said to be worth around $60bn.
There are a number of other claims in the legal papers about sex parties and drugs that allegedly involved Mr Crow.
In a request to dismiss the case, Mr Crow’s lawyer Ken Stone said the plaintiffs were either married or used to be in relationships with the men they were accusing.
The document states: ‘Plaintiffs’ attempt to leverage their long-running domestic quarrels into federal human trafficking and (racketeering) claims is a cynical attempt to extract financial gain from persons who were unfortunate enough to cross paths with them’.
The allegations include that Ms Hubbard met Mr Crow while she ‘worked at a Dallas gentleman’s club’.
The motion to dismiss states: ‘Ms. Hubbard alleges that she became close friends with Mr. Crow, such that they exchanged text messages, he would ‘allow himself to be photographed with her’ and he invited her to attend charity events while she invited him to her modeling events.
According to Mr Stone there are ‘no allegations that Mr. Crow was ever romantically or sexually involved with Ms. Hubbard’.
The complaint fails to allege any sex trafficking crime against Mr Crow and instead attempts to ‘smear’ him with ‘allegations concerning his lifestyle’, the document states.
In a statement Mr Stone said the accusations were ‘absurd and blatantly false’.
He told The Sun: ‘The story shared by the Plaintiffs is upsetting and paints a picture of numerous troubled and broken domestic relationships.
‘We are certain this will be made clear in future legal proceedings’.
A spokesman for the Duchess said: ‘The Duchess has only met Mr Crow once with others to discuss environmental issues.’
Ghanaian students studying in Hungary on scholarships have appealed to the government to settle their unpaid allowances.
The students say they have not received their stipends from the government for the past eight months.
According to the Chairperson of the Academic Committee of the Association of Ghanaian Students Studying in Hungary, Nii Aryee, all efforts to get the government to pay their stipend have proven futile.
Nii Aryee said the failure of the government to make these payments has caused the eviction of some students from their apartments due to their inability to pay rent.
“We understand this scholarship agreement is due for payment of stipends for the past eight months. Efforts made by the student executives to get the Government of Ghana to fulfil these payments have yielded no results thus far.
“The student executives would like to use your platform to draw the attention of the government to our needs. The situation is hard for the majority of students. In some cases, students have been evicted from their apartments due to their inability to pay rent.
“Most students have to combine work with studies which would have been ok in other jurisdictions like Germany and the UK, but here in Hungary, flexible student jobs are scarce and paid poorly; thus, it’s not enough to sustain students. This is having a significant impact on the quality of studies. In summary, it’s not a sustainable situation,” he said.
He urged the government to focus on paying their stipends so they could focus on their studies, as that was the primary reason they were in Hungary.
Ghanaian students studying in Hungary on scholarship was made possible through a bilateral agreement between the Government of Ghana and the Government of Hungary.
The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme was launched in 2013 by the Hungarian government to promote the internationalisation of Hungarian higher education.
The Stipendium Hungaricum spans three years, with the Ministry of Education representing Ghana and the Scholarship Secretariat acting as the coordinating and implementing agency.
A memorandum of understanding, signed in 2015, allowed this collaborative facility to train 50 Ghanaian students annually in various Bachelor and Postgraduate programmes at the tertiary level of education. These include Engineering, Agriculture and Business Administration and to mention a few.
According to her loved ones, Jehane, 30, unfortunately passed away on Friday. The terrible news comes only days after she posted an emotional video in which she described her agonizing anguish to her admirers.
Isaac, age three, and Elijah, age one, are left behind by their loving mother, a native of Doncaster.
Jehane has been chronicling her fight with debilitating migraines on social media for months.
According to MailOnline, the blogger had also been diagnosed with a painful condition called optic neuritis which is the result of optic nerve inflammation.
Many of the recent videos Jehane shared with her 67,000 followers were filmed in hospital, but just five days ago, she tearfully filmed herself at home.

Trying to sum up just how painful her headaches were, Jehane told her fans: ‘Day two of being home out of my one-week stay at the hospital, and as you can see, I have one of my pressure migraines back.’
Jehane went on: ‘Isaac was late this morning because I physically couldn’t get up to walk or take him to school.
‘I’ve taken one of my tablets. This is the second tablet I’ve taken since being home and I’ve only got six of them, so I’m not really sure what I’m meant to do when I run out of those.’

She added: ‘I may be home but I’m still struggling with these migraines as nothing was really done to help them after a whole week of being there and I’d rather self-medicate at home with these around me then me left in a bed on my own all day & night.
Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta has left Accra for China to have negotiations on debt restructuring with officials of that country.
Sources say the Minister left over the weekend via Addis Ababa to attend the UNECA High-Level Ministers meeting on Global Financial Architecture.
After that meeting, Mr Ofori-Atta is expected to head to China, possibly on March 22, 2023.
The Minister leading the government delegation is expected to continue bilateral talks with China and seek financial assurances for Ghana’s programme with the International Monetary Fund.
The trip was postponed to the end of March because it coincided with the National People’s Congress of China meeting in early March 2023.
The Minister of Finance has already held meetings with officials of Exim Bank China in Ghana, all in the line of re-profiling the country’s debt to China.
Ken Ofori Atta on China visit
Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, in an earlier meeting with the German Finance Minister, said China has committed to bilateral negotiation.
In view of that, he is hopeful a deal can be reached to enable Ghana to present its case before the IMF Board.
“The big elephant in the room is China as in how they will comport themselves in the comparability of treatment because China wants to do bilateral. The discussion is on how they [China] can envelop as quickly as possible,” he said.
China visit and Ghana’s programme with IMF
Government sources maintain that the Finance Minister’s visit to China marks a step closer to IMF programme approval by the IMF Board.
In an interview, the Finance Minister told Joy Business the government is working to re-profile the country’s debt with its external creditors including China and subsequently find ways to secure their commitments to cancel Ghana’s debt.
Securing a deal from these creditors will go a long way to getting IMF Board approval for Ghana’s Economic Programme.
Negotiations with Paris Club members
Joy Business understands that there has been some significant progress on negotiations with the Paris Club, with requisite documentation submitted and the expectation of the formation of a creditor committee expeditiously.
Background
Ghana is hoping to restructure $5. 7 billion of its external debt, with China holding a third of it amounting to $1.7 billion.
The structure of Ghana’s external debt shows that the country owes China about $1.7 billion; Eurobonds, $13.1 billion and Multilateral, $ 8.1 dollars.
The rest are Paris Club countries, $1.9 billion and other creditors, $3.2 Billion.
The Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has debunked rumours that he is working to become Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate.
He, thus, has asked the general public to ignore speculations about his alleged intentions to serve as a running mate to Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia should the latter contest and win in the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race ahead of the 2024 elections.
Speaking on Kumasi-based Pure FM in an exclusive interview with Kwame Adinkrah on March 20, 2023, Napo, as he is affectionately called, declared in an unequivocal tone that he believes in the competence of Dr. Bawumia to lead Ghana, hence his selfless effort in trumpeting his capabilities.
He noted that he serves as the Energy Minister and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, which remains his primary focus, and so he is not working to earn the admiration of the Vice President.
“Kwame, I have also heard it on the radio and on social media that I am aiming at serving as Dr. Bawumia’s vice, hence my constant crusade in telling Ghanaians the competence of Dr. Bawumia.
Ghanaians should ignore these rumours. The vice president position is neither a birthright nor an elected position.
The person under discussion has not even declared his bid to lead the NPP as its flagbearer, so tell me, why will I sit here and think or harbour that vision of serving as his veep.”
“I serve as the Minister of Energy; that is my primary focus. However, I believe in the competence of our Vice President, and Ghanaians must know these qualities of his, Simple!
I am not working to become his running mate,” Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh retorted.
Vladimir Putin is wanted by the International Criminal Court after it accused him of committing war crimes in Ukraine.
The arrest order aims to bring him before a court in The Hague, Netherlands for allegedly smuggling Ukrainian minors into Russia from seized territory.
Human rights organizations and the UN have published reports describing a “vast network” of convoys and detention centers where Russian invaders routinely forcibly evict residents from their homes.
Allegations include children, the elderly and people with disabilities being separated from their families, as well as detainees being beaten, electrocuted and threatened with execution.
The 70-year-old is accused of personally overseeing the forced deportation of civilians.A young girl in the Russian-controlled Donbas region cries as she boards a train leaving her city last April.
In one case discovered by Amnesty International, an 11-year-old boy from Mariupol was separated from his mum after they were captured last April and has not seen her since.
Many of the children end up thousands of miles away, banned from contacting their parents and ‘re-educated’ to become pro-Russia, according to the US-based Conflict Observatory.
A UN report in November said they are then placed up for adoption by Russian families and pressured into applying for Russian citizenship, which is sped up as officials falsely label them ‘orphans’.
In its warrant, the International Criminal Court (ICC) says there are ‘reasonable grounds to believe that President Putin bears individual criminal responsibility’ for the ‘unlawful transfer’ and ‘unlawful deportation’ of people.
Bakhmut is the latest warzone city in which families have been forced to flee their homes.Children ‘evacuated’ from Russian-controlled territory are allegedly subjected to ‘re-education.
He is accused of directly ordering the scheme and ‘failing to exercise control’ over the soldiers and and officials running it.
Also accused in the warrant is Russia’s Commissioner for Children’s Rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, who is also said to have been personally involved in the war crimes.
The chances of the pair willingly appearing before the ICC are virtually nil, but the warrant means they would be arrested if they ever set foot in any of the 123 countries which have signed up to its laws.
Making Putin a ‘wanted man’ also sends a wake-up call to other war criminals that ‘their day in court may be coming, regardless of rank of position’, Balkees Jarrah of Human Rights Watch told Metro.co.uk.
The 70-year-old is arguably the most powerful target of the court in its 21-year history, and the most high-profile leader to be formally accused of war crimes since the Nuremberg trials of Nazi officials.
He is only the third Russian to be issued with such a warrant after a former general and former prison boss were indicted last year for torturing hostages and deporting civilians during the 2008 war between Russia and Georgia.
Last night at a house party, a 17-year-old boy was fatally stabbed.
After hearing that a man had been stabbed, Yorkshire Ambulance Service notified West Yorkshire Police, who were dispatched to Salisbury Grove in Armley at at 2.48 am.
There were several people in the house when the police arrived, and they were ordered to leave right away.
They discovered an injured teenage boy. A short while after being taken to the hospital, he was declared dead.
A man who lives across the street from where the house party told Yorkshire Live, said: ‘I live opposite the house where the tragedy happened.
‘They are new houses and have only been built a couple of months ago and this was the first party I think to be held there.
‘The mood was fine, music was a bit loud but everyone was enjoying themselves. I thought no more of it and went to bed.
‘It was only in the morning when I woke up that I saw all the police and the area cordoned off.
‘Sadly the first party to be held there and it’s ended in tears.’
A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: ‘Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a 17-year-old boy in Leeds.
‘At 2.48am this morning, police received reports of a disturbance at a house in Salisbury Grove, Armley, where a party involving a large number of people had been taking place.
‘A further call was received from the ambulance service who were responding to a male reported to have been stabbed at the address.
‘Officers attended and dispersed people from the area around the address, and the victim, a 17-year-old boy from Leeds, was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
‘Detectives from West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team are treating his death as murder.
‘A scene remains in place around the address in Salisbury Grove to undergo forensic examination and specialist searches.’
Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Alan Weekes said: ‘The loss of a young life in such sudden and violent circumstances is an absolute tragedy, and we are treating this incident very seriously and doing everything we can to identify those responsible.
‘We are continuing to support this young man’s family at what is clearly an incredibly difficult time for them, and we are committed to getting them the answers they need as we progress our enquiries.’
Zelensky applauded the decision and referred to it as a “historic choice, from which historic responsibilities will begin” in his evening address to the country.
We have an important international justice ruling today. The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Putin in a case with a real chance of success,’ he stated.
The leader of the terrorist nation and a different Russian officer are now formally suspected of committing a war crime. The illegal transfer of thousands of our children to the territory of the terrorist state is known as the deportation of Ukrainian children.
‘Over 16,000 cases of forced deportation of Ukrainian children by the occupier have already been recorded in criminal proceedings investigated by our law enforcement officers.
‘But the real, full number of deportees may be much higher.’
He added: ‘It would be impossible to commit such a criminal operation without the order of the top leader of the terrorist state.
‘Separating children from their families, depriving them of any opportunity to contact their relatives, hiding children on the territory of Russia, throwing them in remote regions – all this is an obvious state policy of Russia, state decisions and state evil. Which begins precisely with the top official of this state.’
The ICC seeks to arrest Vladmimir Putin over war crimes committed in Ukraine.Putin’s Minister for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova is also being sought by the ICC for her role in the abduction of children from Ukraine to Russia.
The warrant for Mr Putin and another for Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, Russia’s commissioner for children’s rights, relate to the alleged trafficking of children across the border into Russia.
ICC president Piotr Hofmanksi said: ‘It is forbidden by international law for occupying powers to transfer civilians from the territory they live in to other territories.
‘Children enjoy special protection under the Geneva Convention.’
Under article 2 of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (CPPCG), ‘Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group’ is considered to be an act of genocide.
US President Joe Biden said Mr Putin had ‘clearly committed war crimes’ and the warrant, although not recognised in the US, was ‘justified’ and made ‘a very strong point’.
His remarks came after UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said it was essential that those at the top of the regime in Moscow were held to account for the atrocities which have taken place since the invasion a year ago.
In a statement posted on social media, Mr Cleverly said: ‘Those responsible for horrific war crimes in Ukraine must be brought to justice.
UK Foreign secretary James Cleverly has welcomed the ICC’s decision to prosecute Putin, with several other British politicans also voicing their support
‘We welcome the step taken by the independent ICC to hold those at the top of the Russian regime, including Vladimir Putin, to account.
‘Work must continue to investigate the atrocities committed.’
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, a former director of public prosecutions, also backed the move.
‘Today’s announcement sends an important message: there will be no hiding place for Putin and his cronies and the world is determined to make them pay for what they have done,’ he said.
‘These cases are just the tip of the iceberg. One day Putin will face justice: until then, the focus of all who believe in Ukraine’s liberty and freedom must continue to be on ensuring her victory.’
While there is no immediate prospect of Mr Putin facing arrest, legal experts have pointed to the examples of Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic and Liberia’s president Charles Taylor as international leaders who wound up in the dock in The Hague.
Former Libyan leader Muammar Gadaffi was also overthrown and murdered by his own people just four months after being issued an arrest warrant by the ICC- footage of which reportedly left a strong and consequential impression on Putin.
Dominic Raab, the Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary, told the BBC: ‘It is, I suspect, going to be a long journey but people said that about Yugoslavia and Rwanda and many of those people responsible for the carnage ended up in the dock of a court.
‘In the short term it will be very hard for President Putin to move around the world because there are so many countries who are parties to the ICC who will be duty bound to arrest him.’

Valentina Nana Agyeiwaa popularly known as Afia Schwarzenegger, has endorsed the ongoing feud between Fred Nuamah and John Dumelo.
The two friends turned political opponents have been in the news lately following claims of betrayal from both ends.
John Dumelo and Fred Nuamah’s relationship went sour after the later decided to contest for the same seat (Ayawaso West Wuogon) Dumelo last contested ahead of the National Democratic Congress’ upcoming parliamentary primaries.
John complained bitterly about how Fred stabbed him in the back, by picking forms to contest in the upcoming NDC primaries.
In a bid to state their side of story, both men have taken turns to poke each other in the media, the latest being Nuamah’s appearance on United Showbiz over the weekend.
Afia, who seems excited about their feud took to Instagram and said,
“We have suspended every other beef in the country. Currently, John Dumelo and Fred Nuamah’s beef is reigning. That beef must happen. Even if you guys smoke the peace pipe, we will still give you the peace weed. This beef is very important to us as a country.
“But tell John Dumelo that the official beef language is Twi. Nobody is allowed to beef, using fante language. John, be serious. When have you heard anyone beefing in Fante before?” she mocked.
Charterhouse, organisers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) have unveiled nominees for the 24th edition with Shatta Wale once again missing out.
Music lovers have called for the inclusion of Shatta Wale in VGMA following years of absence in the award schemes.
It would be recalled that Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy were banned by VGMAs board as a result of their scuffle on stage back in 2019. The ban was however lifted in 2022.
Stonebwoy showed interest and was welcomed back, however, Shatta Wale announced in a Facebook post his decision to exclude himself from the awards scheme with his then-manager, Bullgod, citing the constant disrespect from organizers as the root cause.
Shatta vowed never to partake in VGMA and has stuck to his decision despite calls by fans to settle his differences with the board.
Many say he is deserving of the Best Reggae/Dancehall Artiste title for his works and ability to release hit songs all year round.
“Upon sober reflections of events in recent times and having made broader consultations, I wish to announce that I will not be part of the Ghana Music Awards scheme going forward. God bless!” Shatta declared in his Facebook post when he officially parted ways with the VGMAs.
The leader of the Shatta Movement had the backing of his former manager when he boycotted the event.
“Shatta Wale will not attend the VGMA until VGMA come to apologize to him. They have consistently disrespected Shatta. If he decides to join the scheme again, I will concentrate on farming that will mean my journey with him will come to an end.
“He has been always overlooking the disrespect to support the culture but it won’t happen again until they apologize. They kept us in jail for a day for doing nothing, it’s sad and disrespectful,” Bulldog said at the time.
In 2023, Robert Klah, the Public Relations Officer of Charterhouse, organizers of VGMA disclosed in an interview on Hitz FM that Stonebwoy showed interest, the reason they were able to work with him.
“The scheme is in such a way that you need to be able to show interest, to be a part of the scheme, once you show interest, we will work with you. The interest can be in the form that you are filing or giving consent. So, Stonebwoy showed interest and we worked with him,” Klah explained.
The 24th VGMA comes off on May 13, 2023. Eight deserving artistes, Black Sherif, Stonebwoy, Sarkodie, King Promise, Camidoh, KiDi, Piesie Esther and Joe Mettle are competing for the ultimate title as the ‘Artiste of the Year’. Check out the posts below:
Yul Edochie has revealed why his older brother, Linc Edochie quit Nollywood for good. The two popular children of legendary Nigerian actor Pete Edochie, Linc and Yul also took Nollywood by storm.
However, Linc applied the breaks on his career and Yul has explained why this happened in an interview with The New Telegraph. See excerpts below;
On why Linc stopped acting, Yul said:
“Yeah, Linc started before me. He started like a year before I got in but later left to do something else. So, I would say we all have our own destiny.”
Speaking on if he plans to quit acting soon and what the future holds for him in Nollywood, Yul Edochie said:
“No, I am not even thinking about that. Never! I studied Theatre Arts and I took my time to read this so I didn’t just get in. I have a passion for acting and I have a passion for directing but I don’t have a passion for producing.
So, if I want to do my own films like right now I am planning on doing my own films, I am going to get a producer who is very good with that. Pay the producer to run everything but he’s going to be professional. So, I won’t say because it’s my film let me do everything, then I will mess it up.”
Yul also spoke on growing up with Nollywood icon, Pete Edochie, as his father.
His words;
“It feels good. Growing up was really good with him as a father. He is extremely strict, but I thank God that He gave me a father like that. I couldn’t have wished for a better father. He is a strict catholic, so a lot of things I know today I learnt because of my background. Like I told you, I would rather die than dope. Kill me but I won’t dope and that’s how my father is.
My father made us to understand that it is better to have a good name. Good name will get you riches and everything you need. That’s the kind of family I was raised in, and my mum too is very strict. There wasn’t much money then to throw around but we grew up loving God and each other.”
Fashion entrepreneur Osebo the Zara Man has come down heavily on media personality Blakk Rasta for citing him in a social media scuffle with media executive Nana Aba Anamoah.
Born Richard Brown, Osebo was guesting on Sammy Flex’s Class Showbiz programme on CTV, Thursday, March 16, 2023.
Early February, Blakk Rasta and Nana Aba Anamoah had some exchanges on social media prompted by the former’s vehement criticism of rapper Sarkodie appearing on a contemporary version of Reggae icon Bob Marley’s ‘Stir It Up’.
During the back and forth, Blakk Rasta shared two pictures of Osebo, Nana Aba’s former boyfriend, donning what appeared to be conventional female clothing.
He captioned the tweet with the words: “Sis @thenanaaba, I hear you have this legend’s direct phone number? I need him to borrow this outfit for the Bob Marley Day concert in May.”
According to Osebo, a number of people drew his attention to the tweet.
He highlighted that he is not in the habit of getting on camera or social media to respond to people who insult him.
Hinting at why, he referred to the proverb that says: “A fool is even seen as wise when he keeps quiet.”
“Whenever you’re angered, don’t speak according to your angered [hurt] heart [feelings] else, excuse me to say, you may say foolish things,” he added, mentioning that the Bible says not to let the sun go down on one’s anger.
He posited that when one is angry, he or she uses their heart or feelings to speak only to be condemned by their own mind or conscience thereafter when the anger subsides.
“So when I am angry, I go quiet,” he noted.
Perhaps in view of the public opinion that he may be effeminate from his fashion choice, he strongly stated that he is a very strong man of valour only that he is self-controlled.
“I laughed when I saw the tweet after it was sent to me,” Osebo said, adding that: “It’s someone who – excuse me to say – is of an inferior mind who will write such a thing [tweet].”
“Whatever is happening between you and Nana Aba has got nothing to do with me,” he said. “So why me? It means you are [intentionally] insulting me.”
He emphasised that Blakk Rasta acted foolishly “by following his feelings [unchecked].”
“I won’t do this,” he said. “If you are wise, you focus your fight on you and your opponent. You don’t bring a third person into it this.”
Else, he said, one may risk offending someone who is a fan and “has so much respect for you.”
With that said, the man some call a cross-dresser confessed his admiration for Blakk Rasta.
“He’s one guy I admire,” he said. “And it is because he is fearless and so I really admire him.”
“But when you respect someone so much, one thing could happen for you to notice their true foolishness,” he added.
He argued that wisdom is seen in consistency.
The Zara Man underscored that, as all would testify to, he has never come “on social media to say foolish things,” and “it’s because where I was raised, I was taught wisdom so I only speak wisely.”
On why he never responds to his critics and those who mock him, he said it is because “my attention is too expensive. I am always [focused on] making money every minute of the time I have.”
He cited once walking out of an interview due to the host’s insistence on bringing up his former girlfriend Nana Aba Anamoah.
He categorically said that he and Nana Aba can never be enemies because they have a child together.
“I cannot say anything derogatory about her. My son may even be grieved, if I do,” he added.
Sammy wondered if Osebo the Zara Man was offended by Blakk Rasta’s tweet.
“Not really,” he answered. “Things like this don’t worry me. I have a tough skin.”
He insinuated that he has suffered worse criticism at the hands of Ghanaians on social media, indicating that he is not perturbed but that there is in fact more coming to provoke them further.
Sammy questioned if he had tried speaking to Blakk Rasta personally concerning the tweet.
“Why would I do that?” Osebo also questioned. “You didn’t show me respect; why would I show you respect?”
He said he and Blakk Rasta do not know each other personally neither have they ever met “one on one before,” and so for the latter to speak in such an unpleasant way about him, “it would be monkey business” for him the offended one to initiate a conversation between them.
“I [only] do business and make money,” he concluded.
Rapper Samuel Frimpong also known as Medikal has disclosed how his wife, Fella Makafui reacted to his collaboration with his ex-lover, Sister Derby.
According to Medikal, his wife is cool with the decision he took to record a song with his ex-lover, Sister Derby. According to him, his collaboration was purely business motivated.
There have been rumors that after Medikal collaborated with Sister Derby, his house has been on fire and his marriage is on the verge of breaking. Many have suggested that Fella Makafui has filed for a divorce.
However, while speaking in an interview on Accra-based Kingdom FM, Medikal debunked rumors that his wife is angry and unhappy about his collaboration.
On whether his wife had a challenge with him recording with his ex, Medikal said “my wife was cool with the decision. It’s business and therefore we need to treat things without emotions, she was cool”.
A pastor in a one-man church in Uganda has abandoned his church members by closing down the church after winning 100 Million Ugandan Shillings from sports betting which is equivalent to 9,652,555.86 Ghanaian Cedi.
Clarifying his reasons, the excited pastor disclosed that the lottery was God’s blessing and an easy way to get him out of poverty as he has been suffering.
According to the self-proclaimed man of God, he felt that running a church without the calling was a big burden, leading to sleepless nights and bad dreams.
Feeling guilty, he concluded to close down the church and find other ways of getting money.
The man of God vowed not to go back to Church as a Pastor but as a congregant since he is now rich and could establish himself.
Richard Brown, popularly called Osebo the Zara Man, has categorically said that he is unperturbed by the public’s insults and mockery and he is not revising his fashion choices until he gains international recognition.
Osebo was on CTV’s Class Showbiz hosted by Sammy Flex, Thursday, March 16, 2023, reacting to media personality Blakk Rasta’s February 7 mockery via Twitter when he said this.
Blakk Rasta mentioned Osebo during the height of his social media fight with the latter’s former girlfriend media executive Nana Aba Anamoah over Sarkodie’s feature on the new ‘Stir It Up’ by Reggae icon Bob Marley.
Osebo on Thursday night told Sammy he has suffered worse than Blakk Rasta’s mockery at the hands of the Ghanaian public for his fashion choices but was unshaken.
“You know what Ghanaians do to me on social media. And I will give them more to talk about,” he said.
He cited Daddy Lumba’s hit song ‘Yentie Obia (We Won’t Mind Anyone)’ as his buttress.
He compared gearing up to release more pictures of himself in unconventional clothing to aiming for Tamale having reached the Achimota Mall en route from Accra.
“So you see, I still have a long way to go. So, if you want to talk about my fashion sense, you’ll exhaust your data,” he warned.
He stressed that he is sticking to his fashion choices until he is seen “walking on international red carpets [and] that is when they’ll show me respect. Mark it on the wall. Very soon, you’ll see that.”
On why the fashionista who appears to cross-dress at times never responds to his critics, he said it is because “my attention is too expensive. I am always [focused on] making money every minute of the time I have.”
The CEO of Ghana Movie Awards, Fred Nuamah, has said that he has already won the Ayawaso West Wuogon primaries
He also reacted to John Dumelo’s recent claim that he is no longer his friend.
John Dumelo made this claim on UTV’s United Showbiz after Fred Nuamah declared his intention to contest for the slot as NDC’s parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.
Fred also indicated that even though they will continue to be together as friends, he is certain of winning the primaries.
By his projection, he has already captured over 80 percent of the electorates in the area.
In reaction to John Dumelo’s earlier statement, Fred Nuamah stated that the former is not his friend but rather a brother.
He added that they have shared many things together in past times and nothing can come between them as brothers, especially politics.
