Kyrie shows support for suspended Grizzlies ace Morant

Dallas Mavericks’ All-Star Kyrie Irving took the opportunity in his post-game media appearance to share support for recently suspended Memphis Grizzlies franchise player Ja Morant.

The comments came after Monday’s 112-108 road loss in Memphis, where Irving and Morant were seen embracing after the final whistle.

Morant had missed his ninth game in a row following an incident at a Colorado nightclub where he was seen on an Instagram live video flashing a gun to the camera.

An investigation by the NBA found the Grizzlies star guilty of bringing the league into disrepute by “holding a firearm in an intoxicated state”, but there was no evidence the weapon belonged to him, or that he brought it onto the team plane, or any NBA facilities.

He was suspended for eight games and also missed Monday’s contest as he works his way back into game shape.

Irving said he understands what Morant is going and that he feels the public and media have treated Morant unfairly.

“I believe any hardship in life builds character,” Irving told reporters. “When you’re dealing with particular hardships in the public eye, especially with the media being attracted to just keeping up with what we’re doing, or what’s the next kind of grab or story.

“I don’t want to assume anything by every media member, but that’s just the way it seems for me and my perspective, which is there was an overload of judgement on Ja.

“There was an overload of judgement on what I had going on, and there’s usually an overload of judgement from the public court of opinion.”

He went on to discuss the “initial shock” Morant must have faced “dealing with the public opinion and all of the extra hoopla that comes with it”.

“But then there’s a real human being dealing with emotion,” he said. “I care about that aspect. That’s where I’m putting my energy.

“I wished his family well wishes, I wished him well wishes, and I just pray for his peace of mind.

“I was happy to see him out there today, and I just want him to make it through. He has a long career ahead of him. I don’t think anybody should be controlling but him.”

Grizzlies wing Dillon Brooks shared that he feels Morant has nothing to prove to the rest of the group when he returns to action, saying “hell no” to the thought of the All-NBA talent coming off the bench as he works his way back.

“He’s proved everything from the jump,” he said. “Love him as a brother. He’s the one who really put this city on the map.

“We were a low-market team, just roaming around the NBA. Now we’re one of the most talked about teams in the NBA. We have a pride in the sense of a chip on our shoulder every single game.

“He doesn’t have to prove anything to us. We have his back and he has our back.”

Irving ended up leaving the arena in a walking boot, which he called “precautionary” to protect his previously injured and now swollen toe after Brooks fell on it in the third quarter.

“I just gotta make it back home to Dallas and start my recovery work and do everything I can to prepare for the next day and a half,” he said. “Take time, rest and exhaust all my options to be ready to play the next game.

“I was really worried about my ankle being sprained, but once we came back here. It wasn’t, it was just a re-aggravation of that same spot on the top of my right foot… It went in a position where I could only re-aggravate my big toe. Again, unfortunate, but just looking forward to the next 48 hours.”

Mitrovic charged as FA deem standard punishment ‘insufficient’

Aleksandar Mitrovic looks set for a lengthy ban after the Football Association claimed a “standard punishment” would be “clearly insufficient” after pushing the referee during Fulham’s 3-1 FA Cup defeat to Manchester United.

Mitrovic reacted aggressively after ref Chris Kavanagh awarded United a penalty for Willian preventing a likely Jadon Sancho goal with his hand when the Cottagers were 1-0 up.

Kavanagh was in the process of showing Willian a red card when Mitrovic approached him, with the Serbian shoving the official and getting in his face.

A straight red would ordinarily lead to a three-match ban but it would appear the FA will attempt to suspend him for longer.

Fulham head coach Marco Silva was also sent off while play was paused following Willian’s handball and he could be in line for a significant ban as well.

An FA statement said: “Fulham, Marco Silva and Aleksandar Mitrovic have been charged following the incidents that took place in or around the 72nd minute of their tie against Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday, March 19.

City winning UCL won’t compare to Julia Roberts visiting Man Utd! – Guardiola

“It’s alleged that Silva used abusive and/or insulting words and/or gestures and/or behaviour towards the match referee; that he used abusive and/or insulting words towards the fourth official prior to his dismissal; and that he also used abusive and/or insulting words and/or gestures and/or behaviour towards the fourth official after being sent off.

“It’s further alleged that in throwing a water bottle in the direction of the assistant referee his behaviour was improper.

“The FA has claimed that the standard punishment which would otherwise apply to Mitrovic for the sending off offence of violent conduct that he committed towards the match referee is clearly insufficient.

“In addition, Mitrovic’s behaviour and/or language was allegedly improper and/or abusive and/or insulting and/or threatening following his dismissal.

“It’s also alleged that Fulham failed to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.”

Hodgson comes out of retirement to try and keep Eagles in top flight

Roy Hodgson has come out of retirement to try and save Crystal Palace from relegation.

The Eagles sit bottom of the Premier League form table having picked up just five points from their last 12 games and have not won since December 31.

Days after Patrick Vieira’s sacking, interim boss Paddy McCarthy saw his side dispatched 4-1 by leaders Arsenal on Sunday to leave Palace three points above the relegation zone in 12th.

Hodgson, 75, hung up his clipboard at the end of last season after seeing Watford relegated to the Championship but has been tempted back to the dugout by the club he began his playing career with in 1965.

It will be his second spell in the Selhurst Park hotseat after keeping the Eagles in the top flight from the 2017-18 season to the end of the 2020-21 campaign before stepping down from his role to be replaced by Vieira.

Ghanaian woman based in Portugal recounts how Christian Atsu supported her for 12 years

Beyond his performance on the field, testimonies about the life of Christian Atsu following his demise have brought to light his acts of benevolence and philanthropy.

In a video shared by Ghana News TV on YouTube, a Ghanaian lady based in Portugal shared her personal experience with Atsu at a time when she was at her lowest.

Addressing a gathering of Atsu’s family and friends during his funeral activities, the lady said she met the late Black Stars player in Portugal in 2011 when she was struggling with her preterm baby.

“Before giving birth, the man responsible left. In March 2011, I met Christian and he asked me for directions to a shop where he can get gari to buy. After showing him the shop and buying his gari, he looked at my baby with an oxygen tube in his nose and asked me if he is sick? I told him no, and that he is a premature baby. He just looked at me and told me to ask him for help if I needed any right after giving me his number,” she narrated.

According to the lady, her first encounter with Atsu who was then struggling to find his feet as a young player with FC Porto’s junior team made her a long-term beneficiary of his benevolence.

“I was without a husband and with a baby who needed to be taken to the hospital every week. I was very broke with no money to even feed but Christian entreated me to fall on him whenever I needed help. He was giving me €200 every week,” she said.

Amidst tears, the lady further narrated that she received help from Atsu in various forms mostly monetary, including helping her to secure a Portuguese passport.

She noted that the footballer at a point trusted her with his bank card and pin when he needed her to run some errands.

She added that she formed a good relationship with Atsu and his wife throughout his footballing career and remained a beneficiary of his benevolence.

“The Christian you gave birth to, did not start being charitable just 5 years ago. Standing here today my son will be 13 in July and if I had not met him… I am sharing my condolence with all of us here. I am grateful to you for giving birth to such a person who helped me to be where I am today,” she added.

Christian Atsu met his untimely death when he was recovered from the rubble of his collapsed apartment in Hatay following an earthquake that struck Turkey on February 6, 2023.

His demise has since attracted several testimonies of his benevolence to all manner of persons from all spheres of life including orphans, prisoners among others.

The late Christian Atsu Twasam was laid to rest on Friday, March 17, 2023, in his hometown of Dogobome in the Greater Accra Region after a state-assisted funeral in Accra.

WBA set new April 1 deadline for Usyk vs Fury agreement

Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury have until April 1 to agree to a heavyweight unification bout, the World Boxing Association have said.

The pair are seeking to come to terms on a fight that would crown the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis.

Though discussions have appeared close to producing a resolution on several occasions, changes in demands from both camps have prolonged the process.

With time running out to meet the provisional April 29 fight date pencilled in for Wembley Stadium, the WBA have now issued a final deadline.

A statement said: “March 10 was the deadline for the initial negotiations granted by the WBA.

“After the WBA announced the situation, Usyk and Fury’s teams contacted each other to inform that the pact was on its way and that the fight was going to take place.

“Now, the WBA have given them this new deadline that expires on April 1 and hope the fight can take place, since it is what the fans are asking for and what the whole boxing world is waiting for.”

The WBA have held off on issuing Usyk with a mandatory fight against Daniel Dubois. Usyk holds the WBA Super belt, while Dubois is the ‘regular’ champion.

Usyk and Fury’s potential fight has dominated the sport across the first few months of 2023, with the pair trading barbs as they seek to hammer out a deal.

The Ukrainian last fought in August, when he defended his titles against Anthony Joshua in their rematch, while Briton Fury completed his trilogy with Derek Chisora in December, winning with a 10th-round knockout.

Champions League talking points as Blues and Gunners go for glory

Arsenal and Chelsea resume their Women’s Champions League campaigns this week in the first legs of their quarter-final clashes.

The Gunners take on Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday and the Blues play Lyon at Groupama Stadium 24 hours later.

Elsewhere, Roma meet Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain tackle Wolfsburg in the quest to be crowned queens of Europe.

We take a look at some of the talking points ahead of the action.

Gunners aim to do without crocked stars

Arsenal — the only English club to have won the competition — are looking to reach the semis for the first time in 10 years.

WATCH: Lens breeze past Angers in Champions League charge

They face German opposition at this stage again after being eliminated in the 2021-22 quarter-finals by Wolfsburg.

Jonas Eidevall’s side made an eye-catching start to their continental campaign, winning 5-1 at defending champions Lyon en route to topping their group.

But losing forwards Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema to ACL injuries is a massive blow.

The club re-signed veteran striker Jodie Taylor last week, though she is not part of their Champions League squad.

Currently fourth in the Women’s Super League, they have won each of their last three games — including beating Chelsea 3-1 in the Continental Cup final.

    Stan in the way

Georgia Stanway will be a familiar face to the Arsenal players
Georgia Stanway will be a familiar face to the Arsenal players

The Gunners will face England midfielder Georgia Stanway, who scored three times in the group stage after joining Bayern Munich from Manchester City last summer.

Bayern, who finished second behind Barcelona in Group D on goal difference, have twice before reached the Champions League semi-finals.

Last season they bowed out in the quarters with defeat over two legs to PSG.

They are second in the German top flight — two points behind Wolfsburg — and on a 12-match winning streak in all competitions.

    Kerr on song for Blues

Chelsea’s Conti Cup final defeat was only their second loss of 2022-23 and first since September.

Otherwise, it has been pretty ruthless form from Emma Hayes’ side, who look well-placed to secure a fourth successive WSL title.

Australia forward Sam Kerr has again been at the forefront, scoring 22 goals for the Blues including 12 since the turn of the year. Five of those came in the group stage.

Hayes’ side topped their pool a year on from failing to make it to the last eight.

    Lyon on the prowl

Ada Hegerberg's return will be a huge boost to Lyon
Ada Hegerberg’s return will be a huge boost to Lyon

After being thrashed by Arsenal, Lyon’s recovery included beating the Gunners 1-0 at the Emirates.

Meanwhile, their defence of the French league title currently sees them a point clear of PSG at the top.

They have had a number of big names back in action in recent months after injuries and Norway star Ada Hegerberg, who scored one goal and set up another in the 3-1 win over Barcelona in last season’s final, is nearing a return of her own.

    The road to Eindhoven

The second legs of these ties take place at the Emirates Stadium and Stamford Bridge next Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

If the English sides progress, Arsenal will then face either PSG or Wolfsburg in the semis in late April, while for Chelsea it will be Barca or Roma.

The final is scheduled for June 3 at PSV Eindhoven’s Philips Stadion.

Man banned 40-year for attacking Sevilla keeper Dmitrovic

PSV have handed the man who attacked Sevilla goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic during their Europa League meeting a 40-year stadium ban.

The Eredivisie club were eliminated from the competition despite a 2-0 second-leg victory in their knockout round play-off tie last month at Philips Stadion, having lost 3-0 in Spain.

Ugly scenes marred the final moments of clash in Eindhoven, however, when a 20-year-old supporter entered the pitch and attacked Dmitrovic, who subsequently pinned the man before security escorted him away.

The man in question was given an initial two-month prison stint on March 8, and sentenced to an additional one-month inside if he re-offends.

PSV have now confirmed he will face further long-term punishment for his actions, with a stadium ban stretching until 2063.

“PSV [have] imposed a 40-year-long ban on the individual who invaded the pitch during the Europa League match against Sevilla,” the club said in a statement.

City winning UCL won’t compare to Julia Roberts visiting Man Utd! – Guardiola

“The 40-year-long ban comes on top of a possible fine imposed by UEFA. The pitch invader is currently serving a three-month sentence with one month suspended imposed by the East Brabant District Court.

“He is also barred from the area around the stadium for two years.”

PSV also revealed the individual had already been serving a ban from the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB).

Sevilla secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League last week following a 2-1 aggregate victory over Fenerbahce.

They will face Manchester United in the last eight in April, after the international break.

  • I will not pay any absurd price for United – Ratcliffe

I will not pay any absurd price for United – Ratcliffe

British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe insists he will not pay ” any stupid prices” for Manchester United as the latest bid deadline looms.

Incumbent owners, the Glazer family, tentatively put United up for sale in November and Ratcliffe was the first suitor to formally register an interest through his London-based chemicals company INEOS.

He was subsequently among the parties to submit initial bids ahead of a ‘soft deadline’ in February, with Ratcliffe and Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani thought to be the two frontrunners.

While the exact value of the bids is unclear, the Glazers are reportedly looking for at least £5.9billion if they are to sell, which would be a new world-record fee for a sports team. The club was valued at £4bn by Forbes last year.

Recent reports suggested the bidders are increasingly confident the Glazers will approve a sale, with Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim expected to submit formal offers this week.

But Ratcliffe has given the clearest indication yet that he will not pay over the odds.

Speaking about the process to the Wall Street Journal, Ratcliffe said: “How do you decide the price of a painting? How do you decide the price of a house?

“It’s not related to how much it cost to build or how much it cost to paint.

“What you don’t want to do is pay stupid prices for things because then you regret it subsequently.”

The second deadline for offers is apparently set for Wednesday, with Sky Sports claiming there could be as many as eight official bids.

Ratcliffe, a life-long United fan, was spotted at Old Trafford last Friday following a meeting with club officials.

Associates of Sheikh Jassim are said to have been in Manchester the day before, though he himself was not in attendance.

  • You have been defeated by corruption – Asiedu Nketiah mocks Akufo-Addo

You have been defeated by corruption – Asiedu Nketiah mocks Akufo-Addo

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has stated that the Akufo-Addo-led administration has failed woefully in the fight against corruption.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah insists that the lackadaisical attitude of President Akufo-Addo towards the canker has empowered his appointees to arrogate state resources to themselves.

Delivering an address titled, “The True State of the Nation Address” on Monday, March 20, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, Mr Asiedu Nketiah also criticised President Akufo-Addo’s silence on the matter during the 2023 State of the Nation Address.

He described the President’s silence on the menace as loud and one that means defeat to the battle.

“President Akufo-Addo’s silence on corruption in his infamous address was loud. It was as loud as his guilt. Evidently, corruption has defeated his family and friends’ government.

“Instead of confronting this canker head-on, President Akufo-Addo has constituted himself into a “Corruption Clearing Agent”, ever-willing to whitewash himself and any of his appointees who dabble in corruption, even before investigative processes commence.

“The President’s actions and complicity have emboldened many of his officials, not least the Vice President, Alhaji Bawumia whose name has come up in multiple corruption scandals such as the PDS scandal, the shady Gold-for-Oil deal, the Stolen Rice scandal and the appearance fee scandal”.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah also condemned the recently held National Awards.

According to him, the President desecrated the country’s national honours by conferring the honours on corrupt individuals in his government.

He said the awards scheme which was established by Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah is to honour distinguished Ghanaian nationals and institutions for their contributions to the development of the country.

For him, it was therefore untenable for the President to confer such honours on corrupt individuals whose cases are before Parliament for investigations.

He explained that awarding appointees whose corrupt acts are under investigation with national honours is tantamount to rewarding criminality, saying “Kwame Nkrumah did not establish the awards to reward criminality.”

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II during the 56th congregation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi was telling the government to be transparent and candid with the citizens about the true state of Ghana’s economy.

“The current economic difficulty should also serve as a wake up call for all of us to carefully review our economy and implement some significant adjustments.

“The moment has come for us to reduce wasteful spending and direct resources towards economically productive areas in order to improve the quality of life of our people,” he advised.

Meanwhile, the Asantehene wants government to assemble the best of brains in the country irrespective of political affiliation in its final proposal to the International Monetary Fund to get the best value for the country.

“As we move to negotiate with our external creditors, I urge government to bring together the best brains with the requisite expertise from all political perspectives to present the final proposal so that whatever decision the country chooses will be everyone’s responsibility,” he indicated.

Hundreds jailed in savage protests over French government’s implementation of higher retirement age

In France, at least 310 individuals have been jailed as a result of protests against the struggling government’s imposition of pension reforms that will result in a two-year increase in the retirement age.

The majority of the 258 arrests made on Thursday night, according to Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, were in Paris, the French radio station RTL said.
The streets of the city were calm by Friday morning, but as a result of the unplanned protests on Thursday night, government ministers were on the defensive.

The controversial plans to raise the retirement age in France from 62 to 64 were rammed through by the government on Thursday, inflaming the nation’s weeks-long protest movement.

Government spokesperson Olivier Veran and Budget Minister Gabriel Attal both repeated President Emmanuel Macron’s claim that the government hadn’t wanted to use its constitutional power to push through the law. They were speaking to French outlets, LCI and France Inter respectively.

“If we don’t do [the reforms] today, it’s much more brutal measures that we will have to do in future,” Attal said.

Protesters briefly blocked Paris’ ring road on Friday morning in protest at the pension reform, causing long delays to the morning commute, according to CNN affiliate BFMTV.

And a strike by garbage workers that has left many streets in Paris full of trash bags is continuing. Interior minister Darmanin said he would order police to force some of them to work.

“I respect the strike of the garbage collectors,” he said, “however, what is not acceptable is unsanitary conditions.”

In a note Thursday night, the interior ministry, in the context of the reaction to the pension reforms, called on security forces to “firmly maintain” protections for elected officials in France, who, “are sometimes the object of threats, insults, or even malicious acts such as damage to property.”

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced in the National Assembly earlier Thursday that Macron would trigger special constitutional powers to enact the proposed pension reform bill.

“We cannot bet on the future of our pensions,” Borne said amid jeers and chants from lawmakers. “This reform is necessary.”

Labor leaders in France called for new demonstrations following Borne’s announcement, with several thousand people converging at Paris’ Place de la Concorde and in several other cities in France on Thursday evening.

“By resorting to [constitutional article] 49.3, the government demonstrates that it does not have a majority to approve the two-year postponement of the legal retirement age,” tweeted Laurent Berger, head of the CFDT, one of the unions leading the protests.

Philippe Martinez, head of the CGT trade union, also called for more strikes and protests, according to CNN affiliate BFMTV.

Massive protests have been held regularly throughout France since mid-January, with millions turning out to voice their opposition to the government’s plan. Mass strikes have hit transport and education.

The government has argued that reform is necessary to keep the pension system’s finances out of the red in the coming years.

“The aim is to balance the accounts without raising taxes or cutting pensions. Various options are on the table, but all include raising the retirement age,” government spokesman Olivier Veran told journalists in January, according to Reuters.

The pension reform bill passed the French Senate earlier on Thursday, but would have faced more of a hurdle passing the National Assembly – the lower house of the country’s parliament.

The session was stopped early for Borne’s announcement. Lawmakers erupted into chaotic scenes as she explained the government’s decision, fighting to be heard as lawmakers sang French national anthem “La Marseillaise” and others held signs reading “No to 64 years.”

Borne also criticized far-right lawmakers in the lower house for not backing the legislation.

Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally party, called for the prime minister to step down.

“After the slap that the Prime Minister just gave the French people, by imposing a reform which they do not want, I think that Elisabeth Borne should go,” tweeted Le Pen on Thursday.

Pension reform in France, where the right to retire on a full pension at 62 is deeply cherished, is always a highly sensitive issue and even more so now with social discontent mounting over the surging cost of living.

But with one of the lowest retirement ages in the industrialized world, France also spends more than most other countries on pensions at nearly 14% of economic output, according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development Ministers of gender from Ghana, Liberia, and Burundi hold bilateral meetings.

Council of state must be scrapped; it’s useless – Prof Gyampo

Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Ghana has revived calls for the Council of State to be scrapped.

The discussion on the uselessness of the Council of State became rife especially when calls for the amendment or abolition of the 1992 Constitution became topical.

The Council of State was established by Articles 89 to 92 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana: “There shall be a Council of State to counsel the President in the performance of his functions.” But the Council’s advice is not binding on the President as he can choose to take or reject.

Meanwhile, huge sums of monies are being used to pay their allowances and ex-gratia without them having any impact on state affairs.

Adding his voice to the conversation Monday, March 20, 2023, Prof. Ransford Gyampo of the University of Ghana said the modus of constitution of the council itself is wrong.

According to him, the President should have no locus in determining who becomes a member of the Council of State.

Likening the institution to that of the chieftaincy in the traditional society, the Professor said chiefs were always born to the existence of a council which gave the latter the power to spite whenever the chief went wrong.

Three people stabbed in a high school incident in Nova Scotia

Three people were stabbed, according to Halifax, Nova Scotia police, in a Monday morning altercation at a high school.

Three people were hurt, according to a statement from Halifax Regional Police, and they were all taken to a hospital for treatment.
Unknown is the degree of their wounds.

At around 9:31 a.m., police detained one person—a young person who attends the school.

Officers in Bedford, Nova Scotia, a suburb of Halifax, are still searching the school.

The school has been closed for the remainder of the day. Police and school board officials are working with school administration to safely release students and staff from the property.

The incident comes nearly three years after a mass shooting that killed 22 people, unfolding over the course of 12 hours between April 18 and 19.

Of the 22 people killed, 13 were shot and nine died in house fires, Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.

Govt spent only 1.6% of GH¢820 bn borrowed for road construction – Aseidu Nketiah

National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, says the claims by the government that it used the monies borrowed for road infrastructure is false.

Mr. Nketiah, who delivered what the NDC termed as the ‘true state of the nation address’, said only 1.6 percent of the country’s over GH¢820 billion has been used for road construction.

“It is a tragedy that the President will classify routine minor road management repairs such as re-sealing, refilling, reshaping, pothole filling, re-graveling and even desilting of gutters as new road construction. The claim that this government has constructed over 11,000 kilometres of new roads is false and should be completely disregarded. The President should hang his head in shame.”

His remarks follow the president’s claim that his administration’s achievement in road construction was unprecedented in the fourth republic.

“The President knows that he deliberately misled Ghanaians with this claim because he is aware that only a minute of the overall resources that have accrued to this government since 2017 has been used for the construction and rehabilitation of roads in this country.”

“The truth is that official government of Ghana records show that a whopping 93 percent of the GHS 820 billion has been used on consumption including Akufo-Addo’s luxurious private travels across the world hired over several months at the expense of the taxpayer,” he added.

  • Godfred Dame represents Africa at Justice Ministers’ Conference in London

Godfred Dame represents Africa at Justice Ministers’ Conference in London

On Monday 20th March 2023 Ghana’s Attorney-General & Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, was present at the Justice Ministers’ Conference in London.

He led a high-level delegation from Ghana to London in the United Kingdom to attend the Justice Ministers’ Conference.

The delegation included Mr. Alfred Tuah Yeboah, Deputy Attorney-General & Deputy Minister for Justice, Mrs. Helen A.A. Ziwu, the Solicitor-General and Mrs. Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The Justice Ministers’ Conference which took place at Lancaster House in London saw several Justice Ministers and Attorney-Generals from over 43 countries with Ghana’s Attorney-General & Minister for Justice representing the entire African continent as the only African country present at the high-level Conference.

The Conference which was convened under the auspices of the Governments of the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Netherlands focused on supporting the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its investigations into the Russian-led war in Ukraine.

The Conference of Justice Ministers was aimed at affording State parties the opportunity to provide the requisite support to the ICC to facilitate its investigation into the situation in Iraq.

The Conference focused on areas including support for witnesses; operationalising ICC filed presence in Ukraine; support for effective use of digital evidence in trials before the Court; support in terms of collection of forensic evidence and psychological support for victims of sex and gender-based violent crimes and crimes against children.

The following distinguished persons gave addresses at the Conference; Dominic Raab, the Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor; Didier Reynders, the European Commissioner for Justice; Denys Maliuska, the Minister for Justice of Ukraine; Andriy Kostin, the Prosecutor General of Ukraine and Karim Khan, the Prosecutor of the ICC.

Speaking at the Conference, Godfred Yeboah Dame stressed that owing to Ghana’s track record as a firm adherent to human rights, Ghana had no difficulty supporting the work of the ICC, especially relating to the investigation of war crimes committed in Ukraine.

With Ghana being one of the first countries to sign and ratify the Rome Statutes as far back as 1999, the AG affirmed Ghana’s recognition and support for the work of the ICC in line with her cherished tradition and culture in the protection of international human rights and the work of international courts set up with the object of consolidating such values.

Mr. Dame, as part of his remarks at the Conference, noted that in January 2017, when a number of member states of the African Union voted to pass a non-binding resolution for a mass withdrawal from the ICC, Ghana was not one of those nations and accordingly, Ghana was willing to support the taking of measures to protect global peace and security.

On Ghana’s position on the situation in Ukraine, Mr Dame highlighted that Ghana has unequivocally and consistently stressed that Russia’s actions in Ukraine constitute an unjustified violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine accordingly justifying Ghana voting in favour of a UN Resolution on 23rd February 2023 which demanded the immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of Russian military forces from the territory of Ukraine and called for a cessation of hostilities.

He noted that Ghana is of the fervent belief that a pathway to the resolution of the war is through honest and sincere dialogue between the warring parties. However, the course of recent events suggests that a peaceful resolution through dialogue will be illusional.

Ghana’s Attorney-General, Mr. Dame, highlighted that the ICC has a responsibility to identify suspects, gather evidence and prosecute perpetrators.

He stated that Ghana supports the investigative work of the Prosecutor in the situation in Ukraine in line with its accountability mandate to ensure that individuals found culpable of egregious crimes in violation of the Rome Statutes are investigated and brought to book under international law.

On the role Ghana could play in supporting the ICC, Mr. Dame said that the Office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice in Ghana has recently moved to fill a lacuna in Ghana’s laws by preparing an International Criminal Court Bill to enable courts in Ghana to try offences recognized under the Rome Statute, and to provide a legal framework within which the ICC can prosecute cases in circumstances where the Ghanaian courts are unable to do so. Currently, the said Bill is undergoing stakeholder consultations as part of the processes for its enactment and will soon be laid before Parliament.

He also noted that in view of the peculiar nature of investigations anticipated to be conducted in the Ukraine situation, there will be the need to provide witnesses with adequate protective and security measures and assist them in obtaining medical, psychological and other appropriate assistance.

Thus, Mr. Dame noted that the repertoire of services offered by the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service places it in a position to contribute effectively to the work of the ICC. He explained that the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit is the agency within the Ghana Police Service specifically trained to offer support for victims.

He noted that its output makes it the best of such units within the Police Service of any African nation and that personnel of the Unit have the requisite training to assist the ICC within the countries of victims if needed.

He also stated that Ghana can offer relocation assistance to the ICC for victims and witnesses. He said that Ghana’s track record as a nation speaks to an established capacity to provide accommodation in-state, identity protection and a home for refugees.

He noted further that Ghana is currently in negotiations with the ICC to sign a relocation agreement which would allow the country to provide the necessary support to victims and witnesses in the manner stated already.

Ghana’s Attorney-General & Minister for Justice, Mr. Godfred Dame, as part of the visit to the UK also had series of other bilateral and trilateral meetings including meetings with the UK Attorney-General and the Ukrainian Prosecutor General; the Lord Chief Justice of the United Kingdom at the Royal Courts of Justice; Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon; the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Justice of the United Kingdom amongst others.

Kenyan opposition leader asks for weekly demonstrations after being sprayed with tear gas by police

In a brief speech to protesters lining up to greet him as he entered Nairobi on Monday, former prime minister and leader of the Kenyan opposition Raila Odinga called for weekly nationwide demonstrations against the high cost of living.

According to his senior adviser Makau Mutua, moments earlier, police in Nairobi shot tear gas and water cannons at his car as they barred his supporters from entering the Serena Hotel, where he was scheduled to hold a news conference.

The protest leader was then forced to move to another part of Nairobi as police prevented his car from entering the Central Business District, where demonstrators and police have been fighting since early in the morning.

“We shall use all available, peaceful, and constitutional means to vindicate our rights,” Odinga said from the sunroof of his car.

Afterward, Odinga drove around Nairobi alongside protesters following his motorcade, which has been repeatedly tear-gassed.

Hundreds of people across the country have taken to the streets to protest against the high cost of daily life.

    Police

arrested protesters, including senior opposition politicians, as demonstrations escalated by mid-day local time Monday.

Odinga, who lost the presidential election for a fifth time in August, called for nationwide protests to demonstrate against what he claims, without evidence, is an illegitimate government that stole the election.

Kilifi county senator Stewart Madzayo and Ugunja sub-county lawmaker Opiyo Wandayi were among those arrested and held in Nairobi, according to Odinga’s senior adviser Mutua. Six other officials were also arrested in the capital, he confirmed to CNN, adding the party was still trying to assess the number of arrests.

Members of Odinga’s party accused police of disrupting what they said were peaceful protests and demanded authorities immediately release the arrested politicians.

Police clashed with protesters in Nairobi’s city center, with businesses in the city center shuttered for the day, and in Nairobi’s Kibera slum, where Odinga has substantial support. Clashes were reported in the city of Kisumu, in western Kenya, which is considered a stronghold for Odinga.

High inflation and soaring food prices in the country has led to a cost-of-living crisis for many in Kenya. “We will sustain the protests [beyond Monday] until we get what we deserve,” Mutua said.

A spokesperson for the Kenyan police could not be immediately reached.

  • Akufo-Addo lied about knowing how to revive the economy – Asiedu Nketiah

Akufo-Addo lied about knowing how to revive the economy – Asiedu Nketiah

National Chairman for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused President Akufo-Addo of deceiving Ghanaians with the claim that he knows how to “revive the economy.”

Speaking at a press conference dubbed the “True State of the Nation’s Address,” held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), he noted the government has failed in reviving the country’s economy, as it promised.

On the contrary, he said the current administration has plunged the country into a severe economic crisis.

“Despite being the luckiest and most resourced government in Ghana’s history, the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government has the least to show in terms of socio-economic development. This is because the NPP has used all your money mainly for consumption. This is contrary to the President’s claim that his government has used “a large amount of the money we borrowed on road construction,” he said on Monday, March 20, 2023.

He further refuted the government’s claim of constructing 11,000 kilometres of new roads, describing it as false “and should be completely disregarded.”

“It is a tragedy that the President will classify routine minor road management repairs such as re-sealing, refilling, reshaping, pothole filling, re-gravelling and even desilting of gutters as new road construction,” he said.

Baffled by the address presented by the President, Mr Asiedu Nketiah noted that the President is being evasive about the reality on the ground with regards to what the true State of the nation is.

“It is obvious that President Akufo-Addo who continues to revel in the largesse of high office does not appreciate the present reality of the Ghanaian people. The President continues to live in his own world, far removed from yours and mine, that he fails or neglects to appreciate the true State of the Nation.

“The true State of the Nation is when a ball of kenkey which used to sell between 50 pesewas and GHS1.00 in December 2016, is now being sold between GhS4.00 and GHS5.00. The true State of Ghana today is that, a sack of maize which used to sell for GHS170.00 in 2016 is now being sold for GHS900.00 as at February, 2023.

“The true State of the Nation is when a bag of Gino Rice (5kg) which used to go for GHS25.00 in December 2016, is now being sold for GHS185.00. Similarly, a tuber of yam which used to sell for GHS5.00 is now being sold for GHS25.00, while a bag of Sachet Water which used to sell for GHS1.50 in 2016, is now being sold for GHS10.00 as at February 2023. Also, a bag of cement which sold for GHS27.00 in December 2016 is today selling at a staggering GHS90.00 and last, but not least, sanitary pad which used to sell for averagely GHS2.50 in December 2016 is today selling for GHS20.00.

“When everything is said and done, this is the true State of the Nation. This is what we feel when we go to the market. This is what we feel in our pockets. This is our everyday reality. A reality in which babies do not have vaccines leading to a measles outbreak; the youth do not have jobs; the middle class faces imminent extinction; and the elderly are being deprived of their life-savings by the very government that swore to protect them.

He concluded that: “This is not the Ghana we deserve; this is not the Ghana our forebears toiled and sacrificed for. The NDC shall not be complicit in this mess.”

“It is absolutely important to awaken President Akufo-Addo and the ruling NPP to the uncomfortable, but frank True State of Ghana today – a nation of many living in fear of where to find their next meal, leaving many parents to endure sleepless nights.

“The true State of our dear Nation no longer lies in flowery speeches laced with political chicanery that never accepts responsibility for anything. Neither does it lie in abstract theories that blame personal failings on events that have no significant impact on our lives,” he added.

An ex-Australian soldier detained in Afghanistan on suspicion of war crimes

The first Australian service member or veteran in active duty to be charged with a war crime for murdering a civilian while fighting in Afghanistan is a former soldier.

According to a joint statement from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Office of the Special Investigation, the 41-year-old male was charged in New South Wales on Monday (OSI).

He will allegedly be accused of murdering an Afghan man while serving with the Australian Defense Force in Afghanistan, according to an AFP statement.

According to the statement, the charge carries a potential sentence of life in prison.
It noted that the individual was remanded in jail and would appear in court later.

His arrest follows a four-year investigation into alleged crimes committed by Australian forces in Afghanistan between 2005 and 2016.

In 2020, the long-awaited report by the inspector general of the Australian Defense Force concluded that Australian elite forces allegedly killed 39 Afghan civilians and prisoners unlawfully.

The ADF recommended that 19 individuals from the Australian Special Forces be investigated over 36 alleged war crimes, including murder and cruel treatment of non-combatants in Afghanistan between 2009 and 2013.

The inquiry described an environment where “blood lust” and “competition killings” were reportedly a norm. It alleged that some patrol commanders required junior soldiers to shoot prisoners to achieve their first kill, in a process known as “blooding.”

The report presented what it said was “credible information” that weapons or handheld radios were then sometimes allegedly placed by a body to make it seem like the person had been killed in action.

None of the 39 alleged unlawful killings happened in the heat of battle, according to the report, and the Afghans who died were non-combatants or no longer combatants.

Monday’s AFP statement said it is continuing to work with the OSI “to investigate allegations of criminal offenses under Australian law related to breaches of the Laws of Armed Conflict by Australian Defense Force personnel in Afghanistan between 2005 and 2016.”

27 million Indians unable to access internet as Punjab police look for Sikh separatists

While police look for a Sikh separatist on the run, Indian authorities have cut off internet connectivity for some 27 million people in the province of Punjab for a third straight day, one of the largest blackouts in recent years.

Amritpal Singh, a well-known figure within the separatist Khalistan movement that aspires to create a sovereign state for adherents of the Sikh religion, was the target of the Punjab government’s initial 24-hour internet ban on Saturday.

The internet shutdown – which affects everyone in the northern Indian state – was extended by the government for a third time to midday Tuesday under a law that allows the connection to be cut to “prevent any incitement to violence and any disturbance of peace and public order.”

Police in Punjab have justified the internet shutdown as a means to maintain law and order and stop the spread of “fake news.”

Dramatic scenes captured on video and broadcast on local television showed hundreds of Singh’s supporters, some holding swords and sticks, walking through the streets of Punjab. Police and paramilitary troops were deployed across several districts in the state in a bid to maintain law and order.

At least 112 people have been arrested, Punjab police said Sunday, while Singh remains on the run.

For decades, some Sikhs have demanded that an independent nation called Khalistan be carved in the state of Punjab for followers of the minority faith. Over the years, violent clashes have erupted between followers of the movement and the Indian government, claiming many lives.

Amritpal Singh in Amritsar, India on March 2, 2023.

The violence reached a climax in June 1984 when the Indian army stormed the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Sikhism’s holiest shrine, to capture armed separatists, killing thousands and reducing much of the building to rubble. The carnage roiled the Sikh community and India’s former prime minister Indira Gandhi, who ordered the operation, was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in the aftermath.

The Khalistan movement is outlawed and considered a grave national security threat by the Indian government, but maintains a level of support among some Sikhs within the country and overseas.

In a statement Sunday, the World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) condemned the “draconian” operation to arrest Singh andsaid it feared “Singh’s detention may be used to orchestrate a false encounter and facilitate his extrajudicial murder.”

Over the weekend, some of Singh’s supporters vandalized the Indian High Commission in London, prompting UK authorities to condemn the incident.

The British High Commissioner to India, Alex Ellis, called the acts “disgraceful” and “totally unacceptable.”

In a statement late Sunday, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said it is “expected that the UK government would take immediate steps to identify, arrest and prosecute” those involved in the incident.

“There is no place in our city for this kind of behaviour. An investigation has been launched by the Met into today’s events,” London mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted Sunday.

Internet shutdowns have become increasingly common in India, which has more than 800 million internet users – the world’s second largest digital population, behind China.

Earlier this month, a report by Access Now, a New York-based advocacy group that tracks internet freedom, said India imposed 84 internet shutdowns in 2022, marking the fifth consecutive year the world’s largest democracy of more than 1.3 billion people has topped the global list.

The disruptions “impacted the daily lives of millions of people for hundreds of hours,” the report said.

The internet has become a vital social and economic lifeline for large swathes of the population and connects the country’s isolated rural pockets with its growing cities.

The government has repeatedly attempted to justify blocking internet access on the grounds of preserving public safety amidfears of mob violence. But critics say the shutdowns are yet another blow to the country’s commitment to freedom of speech and access to information.

  • SoNA 2023: NDC sets the records straight with ‘True State of the Nation’s Address’

Ghana’s biggest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has delivered what it describes as the “True State of the Nation’s Address.”

NDC’s address, delivered by National Chairman of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah follows President Akufo-Addo’s March 8, State of the Nation’s Address which has been described by the party as a sham.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah on March 20, 2023, said President Akufo-Addo failed to capture the reality on the grounds regarding the state of the nation during the 2023 SoNA.

“…Ghanaians are experiencing excruciating hardships because the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government has offered utterly useless and reckless governance in the last seven years.

“We in the NDC, the only viable alternative to this bungling government, deem it necessary to straighten the records and expose the untruths presented to the nation through parliament by President Akufo-Addo and to highlight that our dire state is self-inflicted and deliberately so by this government,” he said.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah highlighted a number of issues he said the government failed to touch on during the 2023 SoNA, particularly the current economic crisis, and maintained that the President has lost touch with reality on the grounds.

“Today, the public debt stock which stood at 120 billion cedis in 2016 has increased to a whopping 600 billion, while the debt to GDP ratio that was 56% in 2016 now stands at 103%.

“Apart from the unsustainable debt of the country, the budget deficit which stood at 6.1% in 2016 now stands at a whopping 12% on the watch of the Bawumia-led Economic Management Team. This is after it rose to an unprecedented high of 15.7% in 2020 owing to the reckless election driven spending of the government.

He further noted that: “Per government’s own figures, the rate of inflation which stood at 15.4% as at December 2016, now stands at a hyper rate of over 52%. The lending rate that stood at about 25% on average in the year 2016, now stands between 38%- 45%; whilst exchange rate depreciation that stood at 9.6% for the year 2016 now stands at about 23% for the first two months of this year alone. This is after the Cedi depreciated by over 54% in the first eleven (11) months of last year, 2022, making it the worst performing currency in the world.”

Additionally, he lamented the downgrading of Ghana’s economy by key International Rating Agencies.

“From a stable credit rating of B- in 2016 under the NDC/Mahama administration, Ghana’s economy has been downgraded by all credit rating agencies to below junk status owing largely to the country’s default on its debt obligations on the watch of Bawumia,” he said.

“Despite being the luckiest and most resourced government in Ghana’s history, the Akufo Addo/Bawumia NPP government has the least to show in terms of socio-economic development,” the former Chief Scribe of the NDC added.

He further accused the government of draining the national coffers.

“The NPP has used all your money mainly for consumption. This is contrary to the President’s claim that his government has used “a large amount of the money we borrowed on road construction.”

He lamented that despite these challenges, the current administration has failed to accept responsibility and has delighted in falsifying the causes of the disaster currently being experienced.

“Even worse was the continuation of the discredited attempt to evade responsibility for the economic atrocities that have led us to this depressing point. Whilst they engage in vain glory, Ghanaians have to deal with the daily consequences of a collapsed economy,” he said.

Additionally, he said President Akufo-Addo in the address, failed to convince the Ghanaian people that there is any end in sight to “the suffering and pain that his government’s reckless and misguided policies have brought on us.”

The video captured the couple having a great time on the dance floor, and many Ghanaians expressed admiration for their love and chemistry.

Bola Ray’s playful and fun side, which is not often seen in public, was also showcased.

  • How to know if a forex brokerage is trustworthy?

How to know if a forex brokerage is trustworthy?

Dealing in foreign currencies can be very rewarding, so as a foreign currency trader, choosing a brokerage that you can trust is critical. In this article, we will discuss some of the methods for determining the dependability of a forex brokerage.

    Administration of regulations and licenses

While looking for a trustworthy trading platform, the first thing to look for is the brokerage’s regulation and licensing status. Which government agency is in charge of regulating forex brokers varies from country to country. This is done to protect traders. The National Futures Association (NFA) and the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), to name two examples from the United States, are in charge of regulating foreign currency brokers in that country.

The United Kingdom has the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), Cyprus has the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC), and the European Union has the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID II).

A reputable agency that regulates and registers a foreign exchange brokerage makes sure that the broker follows the laws and rules. This, in turn, ensures that your money is safe and that transactions are carried out honestly.

    Platforms for buying and selling

A reputable forex brokerage should supply customers with a stable and secure trading platform. A good trading platform should be simple to use and easy to navigate. Moreover, the platform should supply traders with a number of trading tools and indicators to help them make informed trading decisions.

Many forex brokers like to use the MetaTrader 4 (MT4) platform, due to its ease of use and vast collection of trading tools.

A trustworthy forex broker should also provide a mobile trading platform that works with both Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems so that traders can monitor their transactions and make trades while moving around.

    Customer help

The quality of the broker’s customer service is another crucial factor to take into account when looking for a trustworthy forex broker. A reliable forex broker should have a proactive customer support service that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The people who work in customer service should be able to answer your questions quickly and accurately.

You can figure out how good a forex broker’s customer service is by sending them an email or calling their helpline and seeing how quickly and efficiently they answer your questions and concerns.

The phrases “spreads” and “commissions” are used interchangeably

Spreads and commissions are highly significant aspects to consider when choosing a forex broker. A trustworthy foreign exchange broker should provide clear and easy-to-understand spreads and charges, as well as affordable pricing.

The spread is the difference between the bid and ask prices of a currency pair. The spread is the source of profit for forex brokers. A reputable forex broker must provide tight spreads that are similar to those supplied by other forex brokers.

Commissions are yet another means by which forex brokers create cash for themselves. Commissions are fees charged on each transaction that are sometimes stated as a percentage of the entire value of the transaction. A reputable forex broker’s commission rates should be modest and similar to those of other forex brokers.

    Deposit and withdrawal alternatives

A reputable foreign exchange broker should let customers deposit and withdraw money in a number of ways, such as bank transfers, credit cards, electronic wallets, and cryptocurrency exchanges.

A reputable forex broker should also have quick and risk-free ways to withdraw your money. Withdrawals should be processed in a reasonable length of time, and there should be no extra fees.

    Educational resources

A reputable forex broker should provide traders with access to educational materials and trading tools to help them grow their trading skills. A reliable forex broker should provide its customers with access to a wide range of educational resources, such as trading manuals, video tutorials, and webinars.

A trustworthy forex broker should also give customers access to a wide range of trading tools, such as economic calendars, market research, and trading signals. Traders can increase their chances of success by employing these tools, which can help them make more informed trading decisions.

    Customer reputation and feedback

When figuring out how trustworthy a forex broker is, you should look at both their reputation and reviews. When choosing a forex broker, it is essential to do research and read reviews posted by other traders. This might help you figure out what the pros and cons of working with the broker are.

You can also look at the forex broker’s social media pages to see how they interact with their clients and the trading community in general. A reliable forex broker should be active on many social media sites and respond quickly to questions and concerns from clients.

    Transparency

Another key thing to consider when searching for a reliable forex broker is the broker’s transparency. A forex broker should always be clear and honest about the fees, spreads, and commissions they charge. Moreover, their terms and conditions must be crystal clear and straightforward to understand.

A trustworthy forex broker should also make their financial records and audit results accessible to their clients. This proves that they are truthful about their financial operations and that you can trust them with your money.

    Conclusion

Lastly, it’s important to choose a reliable forex broker if you want to keep your money safe and make sure your transactions go smoothly. A reliable forex broker should be regulated and licensed, have a reliable trading platform, competitive spreads and commissions, a variety of deposit and withdrawal options, educational resources and trading tools, a responsive customer support team, a good reputation and positive reviews, and be clear about their fees and financial activities.

It is important to keep these factors in mind when choosing a forex broker. Doing so will help to assure you that you are working with a trustworthy and competent broker that can aid you in accomplishing your objectives as a forex trader.

You have to do your homework to become a good actor – David Dontoh

Ace actor and television personality, David Dontoh has offered a piece of advice to current and upcoming actors to take their homework seriously to help them reach the peak of their professionalism in the acting field.

The veteran actor is well-known on both screen and stage for his outstanding acting abilities.

Mr. Dontoh shared his experiences within the movie industry with Kafui Dey on GTV’s Breakfast Show on March 17, 2023.

He stated that one cannot fully pronounce that he is an actor if he does not do his homework before hitting the stage and even locations.

The homework he spoke about, was the backstage findings and research the actor needs to do before getting into the character he or she has been assigned to play.

He added that knowing your lines as an actor helps coordinate scenes during either stage performances or screen acting, but doing your homework gives you a top-notch performance.

He stressed the importance of theatre arts and stage plays as ones that give the actor every direct and instant appreciation and acknowledgement they deserve.

He added that as much as stage performance is paramount in every actor’s career, stage or theatre drama is virtually dying off in Ghana.

Mr. Dontoh also praised people like Uncle Ebo Whyte, Abubakar Latif, and George Quaye, who have been trying to revive stage drama in the country for a long time.

Adding that as much as these people are trying to revive the stage drama, there is no grass root firmness.

He advised that theatre arts should be revived in the junior and senior high schools in Ghana so it gets a firm root and survives.

GACL pay GH¢10m out of GH¢28m owed ECG

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has paid GH¢10 million out of the GH¢28 million owed to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to prevent a disconnection from the national grid.

The institution has also promised to pay the GH¢18 million outstanding two weeks from today.

According to JoyNews’ James Avedzi, the payment was made on Monday, March 20, 2023, following a visit by ECG’s revenue mobilisation taskforce to the House.

Earlier, the taskforce also compelled Parliament to make part payment of its indebtedness to the ECG.

The august house paid GH¢8.5 million out of GH¢13 million owed the power distributor to avert disconnection.

The ECG has commenced a series of activities in a bid to recover over GH¢5 billion of debt owed by both private and state institutions.

The exercise began on Monday March 20, 2023, after ECG announced the closure of its main offices except customer support departments, in order to embark on a one-month-long exercise.

All ECG staff, from top management to junior officers, will be used to retrieve all the monies owed the company.

As a result, the Managing Director of ECG, Mr Samuel Dubik Mahama has toured all the operational regions of ECG to sensitise the staff on how to go about the mobilisation of the revenue.

Mr Mahama said they should respect the customer at all times.

It is expected that at the end of the exercise, 100% of the debt owed ECG would be recovered.

  • ‘Stop wearing fake branded dresses’ – Fashion critic descends on Agradaa

‘Stop wearing fake branded dresses’ – Fashion critic descends on Agradaa

Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, has had her fashion sense questioned after sharing some recent pictures on social media.

Agradaa is noted for flaunting clothes, shoes, and bags she claims to have purchased from major luxury brands such as Balenciaga, Gucci, Prada, and others.

In one of her latest posts, Nana Agradaa shared a picture of her wearing a black and white dress with Versace prints.

She paired the look with some shoes she claimed were from Balenciaga and a ‘Gucci’ waist belt.

This caught the attention of popular fashion critic, Charlie Dior who labelled the outfit fake and tacky.

According to Charlie, he stormed the official website of the luxury brands in search of the specific outfit Agradaa wore, but they were nowhere to be found.

“I saw this look on Tik Tok and she is claiming this is what is usually worn when it rains in Ghana. She has a Versace on (screams), a Gucci belt, and a Balenciaga pair of shoes. I feel like some of these celebrities in Ghana have been printing their own name brands. Some of these brands they wear are not on their websites. I went to search for this outfit worn by Agradaa and it was nowhere to be found,” Charlie indicated on his YouTube channel.

According to him, Agradaa in that particular fit looked as though she was about to dispose of rubbish.

“This is a clear example of doing the most without doing anything at all (Points to Agradaa’s outfit). There are a lot of style mixtures without a thought and direction. Eii woman. This one is a huge lie. I hate the look. This is the look you wear to take the trash out,” he added.

  • Ghana has no system to register Mohammedan marriages – Dwomoh

Ghana has no system to register Mohammedan marriages – Dwomoh

A Managing Partner of Law Plus Attorneys, Dennis Adjei Dwomoh has said that the country has no system to register Mohammedan marriages.

According to him, this is a major concern.

He added that Islamic priests needed to administer such marriages have also not been registered to do so legally.

Mr Dwomoh’s assertion comes in the wake of research undertaken by DennisLaw, a law firm, that found that there are no lawful Islamic marriages in Ghana. This is because since the law was passed in the colonial era, the Ministry of Interior has not put in place a regime to license Mohammedan Priests, and the MMDAs have no system for registering these marriages.

In recent times, the Head of Marriages at the Registrar General’s Department has also complained that 80% of marriages ordained in the Islamic religion in Ghana are not valid.

This disclosure is reported to have been made at a round table discussion on the theme “Working together for a better Society.” organized by civil society organisation, Telling Ghana.

According to him, the absence of the system makes it difficult for Islamic marriages to be registered and recognised by law.

He said the Ministry of Interior has not put in place a regime to license Mohammedan priests, adding that the MMDAs have no system for registering these marriages.

“ … If you look at Article 35 of the Constitution there is an obligation on the part of the state to give all Ghanaians access to public services and it includes registration of marriages. Now, our research will show that there is no system of even registration of marriages,” he said in an interview on JoyNews’ The Law on Sunday.

On the same show, the Managing Partner at Hay and Partners @ Law, Hanifa Adjoa Yahaya has pointed out some gaps in the law that governs Mohammedan marriages.

She noted that Islamic marriages are supposed to be registered a week after the day of celebration as stipulated by law.

According to her, if this is not done the marriage is rendered invalid.

“If you do the Islamic marriage, perhaps in the eyes of Allah your marriage is valid, but in the eyes of the laws of Ghana, if you don’t register within one week, your marriage is not valid,” the Lawyer stressed.

  • My husband left home for ministry only to return with a wife, 2 children – Gospel musician

My husband left home for ministry only to return with a wife, 2 children – Gospel musician

United Kingdom-based gospel musician, Madam Albertha, has recounted how she was betrayed by the man who vowed to be her protector.

In an interview with Adom TV, she advised her fans saying “Be fearful of some humans”.

The musician narrated how her husband of 19 years made her a laughing stock by impregnating another woman while they were still married.

Narrating the genesis, she said that she never suspected or even bore the thought that her husband could be unfaithful as he was a head pastor of a church they had founded.

According to her, their church flourished so much that they made preparations towards building a second branch, a decision that later turned out to be ruinous.

She detailed that her husband sought permission to stay close to the construction site while she heads the mother church in his absence.

A week turned into two months, six more months passed, then a year of not setting eyes on her husband and father-of-two, she said caused her sleepless nights.

The much-sought answer to his ‘disappearance’ became clear when she phoned one of the junior pastors working with her husband, who spilled the tea that the branch he was building was actually a family he was raised with another wife.

Madam Albertha said she gathered the courage to confront her husband, but rather than give an explanation he hung up on her and that was the beginning of their separation.

After three more years of not hearing from her husband, the gospel musician said the church was dissolved and she began divorce proceedings.

  • Former president of Taiwan, to make a historic trip to China

Former president of Taiwan, to make a historic trip to China

Ma Ying-jeou, a former president of Taiwan, will make his first journey to mainland China since the 1949 conclusion of the Chinese Civil War next week.

Ma, a prominent figure in Taiwan’s opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party, will visit mainland China between March 27 and April 7, according to a statement released by his foundation on Sunday.

According to the foundation, he will pay respects to his ancestors in the southwest Hunan Province and head a group of Taiwanese students who will meet with counterparts from mainland China in several locations.

While the trip is ostensibly a private one it is filled with historic symbolism and comes at a time of deepening tensions over the future of Taiwan.

China’s ruling Communist Party has never controlled Taiwan but claims the self-ruled island democracy as its own and has repeatedly refused to rule out taking it by force.

At the end of the Chinese Civil War, Mao Zedong’s Communist Party took control of mainland China while the Kuomintang under Chiang Kai-shek fled to Taiwan– with both sides claiming to be the legitimate representative of China in the following decades, until Taiwan’s transition into a democracy in the 1990s.

But more recent decades saw increasingly ties warm between Beijing and the KMT, a rapprochement that reached its peak during Ma’s administration.

Ma served as Taiwan’s president between 2008 and 2016 during which he drew stronger economic ties between China and the democratically ruled island but kept Beijing’s push for reunification at bay.

His perceived closeness to Beijing, particularly on the economic front, sparked protests and a major voter backlash.

The KMT have lost the last two elections to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which is much more skeptical toward Beijing and rejects the tacit understanding that both sides acknowledge they belong to “one China,” but with different interpretations of what that entails.

China’s leader Xi Jinping has ramped up economic, diplomatic and military pressure on Taiwan ever since the DPP took power in 2016.

Ma’s historic trip is taking place against that febrile geopolitical backdrop and comes as Taiwan and the United States ramp up efforts to counter China’s growing military capabilities.

His trip will also come at a politically sensitive time. Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen will soon make a stopover in the US en route to diplomatic allies in Latin America, an official with Taiwan’s Overseas Community Affairs Council told lawmakers earlier this month. US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy also said he plans to meet with her when she is in the US.

Taiwan is scheduled to hold its next presidential election in January next year. Tsai is not eligible for re-election.

Fears of a Chinese invasion have loomed over Taiwan for more than seven decades but they have been supercharged by both Xi’s increased assertiveness and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The KMT has long rejected being characterized as a “pro-Beijing” party. But its leadership, including Ma, have often pushed the need to improve ties.

The KMT’s deputy chairman Andrew Hsia visited Beijing last month to meet with senior Communist Party leader Wang Huning.

In contrast, Beijing has severed official communication with Taiwan’s Tsai-led government.

In 2015, Ma and Xi held a historic face-to-face meeting in Singapore – the first meeting between leaders of the Kuomintang and Chinese Communist Party since the end of the Chinese Civil War, although not on either side of the strait.

Ma’s foundation said a meeting between Xi and Ma is not currently being planned for the trip.

Taiwan’s presidential office said in a statement Sunday that Ma will be required to report details of his itinerary to the government before and after his visit to China.

Protests in South Africa: Ghanaians adviced to restrict movements

The Ghana High Commission in South Africa has asked Ghanaians in the country to be vigilant and cautious in movements.

The Mission has also advised the Ghanaian Community to restrict their movements only to safe areas.

This directive is based on the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) nationwide protest.

The Commission in a circular said even inasmuch as the organisers have promised a peaceful event, previous ones have been violent.

“The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria presents its compliments to Ghanaians living in South Africa and wishes to advise that the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), a political party, has planned a ‘national shutdown’ scheduled for March 20, 2023”.

“While, the organisers have expressed their wish for a peaceful event, previous protests and demonstrations have had violent incidents.”

The Mission would, thus, like to advise members of the Ghanaian community to be vigilant to any such incidents, restrict their movements to safe areas, avoid mass gatherings and contact the police for assistance when required,” excerpts of the circular said.

    Below is the full statement:

South Africans are anxiously expecting the outcome of the “national shutdown” today.

The radical opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party, wants the country to come to a standstill due to a number of grievances.

Julius Malema, leader of the EFF, the third-largest party in Parliament, said South Africans are tired of rolling power cuts being implemented daily, corruption and unemployment among other issues.

  • Time is running out for the world to avert disaster – UN report warns

Time is running out for the world to avert disaster – UN report warns

Based on recent UN-backed research, the globe is rapidly reaching catastrophic levels of warming and the global climate goals will be missed unless swift and drastic action is taken.

The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, declared that “the climate time-bomb is ticking” on Monday to commemorate the release of the synthesis report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
He continued, “Humanity is on thin ice, and that ice is melting fast.

The report uses the findings of hundreds of scientists to offer a thorough analysis of the state of the climate issue.

The science is not new – the report pulls together what the IPCC has already set out in a cluster of other reports over the last few years – but it paints a very stark picture of where the world is heading.

“This report is the most dire and troubling assessment yet of the spiraling climate impacts we all face if systemic changes are not made now,” Sara Shaw, program coordinator at Friends of the Earth International, said in a statement.

The impacts of planet-warming pollution are already more severe than expected and we are hurtling towards increasingly dangerous and irreversible consequences, the report says.

While the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above preindustrial levels is still possible, the report noted, the pathway to achieving it is rapidly closing as global production of planet-heating pollution continues to increase – emissions grew by nearly 1% last year.

Concentrations of carbon pollution in the atmosphere are at their highest level for more than two million years and the rate of temperature rise over the last half a century is the highest in 2,000 years.

The impacts of the climate crisis continue to fall hardest on poorer, vulnerable countries that have done least to cause it.

“Our planet is already reeling from severe climate impacts, from scorching heat waves and destructive storms to severe droughts and water shortages,” said Ani Dasgupta, president and CEO of World Resources Institute, in a statement.

The biggest threat to climate change action is the world’s continued addiction to burning fossil fuels, which still make up more than 80% of the world’s energy and 75% of human-caused planet-heating pollution.

Despite the International Energy Agency saying in 2021 that there can now be no new fossil fuel developments if the world is to meet climate commitments, governments are continuing to approve oil, gas and coal projects.

The Biden administration has just greenlit the hugely controversial Willow oil drilling project in Alaska. Once operational, it is projected to produce enough oil to release 9.2 million metric tons of planet-warming carbon pollution a year – equivalent to adding 2 million gas-powered cars to the roads.

Arati Prabhakar, the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said in a statement that the new UN report shows “the Earth’s future is not predetermined.”

“It underscores the urgent need for leaders in every sector and every country to step up and take bold climate action,” Prabhakar said.

China is planning a huge expansion of coal – the dirtiest of fossil fuels. In 2022, it granted permits for coal production across 82 sites, equal to starting two large coal power plants each week, according to a report last month.

But Monday’s report also set out pathways to keep the world on track to limit warming to within 1.5 degrees. “This IPCC report is both a blistering condemnation of major emitters’ inaction and a sound blueprint for a much safer and more equitable world,” Dasgupta said.

Staving off the worst impacts of the climate crisis will require radical shifts across every sector of the economy and society, according to the report.

It called for deep cuts to planet-heating pollution by moving away from fossil fuels and investing in renewable energy. To limit warming to 1.5 degrees, global levels of planet-heating pollution must fall by 60% by 2035 compared with 2019, according to the report.

It emphasized the need for greater investment to build resilience to climate impacts, and increased support for people struggling with climate-related losses, especially in the most vulnerable countries.

The report also said we need to remove carbon from the air, including potentially through technology such as “direct air capture” – removing carbon directly from the air and storing it, possibly by injecting it underground.

This technology does remain divisive, however, as some believe it distracts from policies to cut planet-heating pollution.

“In my country, Sri Lanka, the impacts of climate change are being felt now. We have no time to chase fairy tales like carbon removal technologies to suck carbon out of the air,” Hemantha Withanage, chair of Friends of the Earth International, said in a statement.

Guterres called on all countries to “massively fast-track climate efforts” and, specifically, for rich countries to hit “the fast-forward button” on commitments to reach net-zero – which means removing as much plant-heating pollution from the atmosphere as they emit.

For the first time, he said developed countries must reach net-zero as close to 2040 as possible, far earlier than the 2050 deadline a lot of countries – including the US and the UK – have pledged to meet.

“Today’s IPCC report is a how-to guide to defuse the climate time-bomb,” Guterres said. “But it will take a quantum leap in climate action,” he added.

The report, which was signed off over the weekend by representatives from the UN’s nearly 200 countries, will feed into the next UN climate conference, COP28, in Dubai at the end of the year. The conference will include the first “global stocktake” from the Paris Climate Agreement, an assessment of progress toward addressing the climate crisis and averting climate catastrophe.

According to the Daily Graphic, the invitation comes after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo ordered the police to probe the allegations.

The report indicated that the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is in charge of the probe.

Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, in an interview on GBC which GhanaWeb monitored, averred that government officials were behind the operations of illegal miners (galamseyers) in the country.

According to the renowned surgeon, these officials buy the excavators and other equipment for these illegal miners and pump huge sums of money into the project to keep them in business.

Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng’s comment comes on the heels of allegations in 2020 that some 500 seized excavators from illegal miners were missing.

He described the news as false and an attempt by some persons in government to sack him as the Environment Minister at the time.

“Let me tell you that I did not take one excavator for anything, they know the truth. Now things are coming up; we know those who are behind it and the party people who are there; people in government, including Jubilee House, who are doing galamsey and so on, even now,” he said.

“There was an orchestrated scheme, even within the party and government, to get me out. Why is it that when I left now everyone is in the forest?” he added.

Cheap oil prices since 2021 is due to banking concerns

    Reuters, March 20, LONDON –
On Monday, oil prices dropped to their lowest level in 15 months as investors worried that risks to the global banking industry and a likely rise in interest rates in the US could lead to a recession that would reduce demand for fuel.

By 0950 GMT, May Brent crude futures were trading erratically and were down $2.07, or 2.8%, to $70.90 a barrel.
Before its Tuesday expiration, the U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude contract for April was down $1.88, or 2.8%, at $64.86.

At $65.06 per barrel, the more actively traded May futures were down 2.8%.

Brent and WTI earlier hit lows last registered in December 2021, with WTI sinking below $65 a barrel. Both benchmarks shed more than 10% of their value last week as the banking crisis deepened.

The slide in oil comes despite the historic deal for UBS, Switzerland’s largest bank, to buy Credit Suisse in an attempt to rescue the country’s second-biggest bank.

However, banking stocks and bonds continued to plunge on Monday in a sign that investor confidence remains fragile.

After the deal was announced, The U.S. Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and other major central banks pledged to enhance market liquidity and support other banks.

“The market focus is on current banking sector volatility and the potential for further rate hikes by the Fed,” said Baden Moore, National Australia Bank’s head of commodity research.

The U.S. Federal Reserve is expected to raise interest rates by 25 basis points on March 22 despite the recent banking sector turmoil, according to most of the economists polled by Reuters.

However, some executives are calling on the central bank to pause its monetary policy tightening for now but be ready to resume raising rates later.

“Volatility is likely to linger this week, with broader financial market concerns likely to remain at the forefront,” ING Bank analysts said in a note, adding that the looming Fed decision increases week’s Fed meeting adds to uncertainty in markets.

Further out, a ministerial committee of OPEC and producer allies including Russia, together known as OPEC+, is set for April 3. The group agreed in October to cut oil production targets by 2 million barrels per day until the end of 2023.

Police officer allegedly shot dead while having sex in car

A police officer has allegedly been shot dead while having sexual intercourse with his side chick in a bush in Mpumalanga in South Africa.

TimesLIVE reported that sixty-year-old Judas Chiloane, a traffic chief, was allegedly gunned in the back seat of his Ford Ranger bakkie twice while his lover was unharmed.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the report and revealed two arrests have been made in connection with the murder.

The police spokesperson said “The two men told us that they would normally go to the spot [where Chiloane was shot dead] to rob couples who use the area to engage in sex in their cars.”

Sekgotodi added that the two suspected robbers ambushed Chiloane and his side chick and snatched away his gun before firing shots at his thigh and upper body.

The lady sought help, and when the police came, they declared their colleague dead at the scene.

A source in the police force revealed to TimesLIVE that Chiloane was found with no clothes, and his uniform was on the ground.

“They shot him in the leg. He tried [to] escape to the driver’s side, and he was shot again … The officer tried to speed off for about 124m but succumbed due to injuries sustained. It seemed like the suspect took his firearm and other items and [fled].”

Judas Chiloane’s brother Richard said they do not know this side chick he was with when he was murdered:

“We do not know that lady, I haven’t even seen her. What we know is that my brother was a good man who loved his family and was also a member of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC). He did not drink or was involved in anything wrong.”

He admitted that the father-of-three might have had lovers on the side, but the family only knew his live-in girlfriend.

  • Vote of no-confidence against Macron on despised pension measures

Vote of no-confidence against Macron on despised pension measures

After forcing through controversial pension reforms, French President Emmanuel Macron will face votes of no-confidence on Monday, drawing outrage from parliamentarians and nationwide protests.

Whatever of the outcome, Macron’s government is expected to survive the motions, and he will continue to serve as president. Yet, the backlash against the reforms doesn’t appear to be abating.

The contentious law to raise the retirement age for the majority of workers from 62 to 64 was forced through by the French government on Thursday by using special constitutional powers.

On Friday, French lawmakers filed two motions of no-confidence against the Prime Minister – one from a grouping of small parties, and one from National Rally, a far-right party.

In order to be successful, the majority of sitting lawmakers – 287 of them – would need to vote in favor.

If successful, French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne would have to resign and the pension reform legislation would be rejected. This would leave French President Emmanuel Macron with the option to either replace the prime minister or dissolve the parliament.

The move to oust Macron’s government is believed to be unlikely to succeed, however, since the pension reforms also have the support of the Republican party, making it harder for the rest of the opposition parties to get the absolute majority needed.

“There will be no majority for these votes of no confidence. Responsibly, we do not want to add chaos to chaos and let our country sink into disorder,” the leader of the Republican group Eric Ciotti tweeted.

Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire also downplayed suggestions that the vote might be successful.

“There will be no majority to bring the government down, but it will be a moment of truth,” Le Maire told local news outlet Le Parisien.

“I understand our countrymen’s fears and anxieties, but we will definitely not improve things by denying economic reality,” he added.

With one of the lowest retirement ages in the industrialized world, France also spends more than most other countries on pensions at nearly 14% of economic output, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation.

The government argues that the current system – relying on the working population to pay for a growing age group of retirees – is no longer fit for purpose.

Yet the protests took aim not only at the pension reform, but the constitutional power used to force it through.

Unable to gain majority support for the bill in parliament, Macron resorted to using Article 49.3, which enabled his government to pass the bill through the National Assembly without a vote.

The move has been widely condemned by protesters and lawmakers as undemocratic.

“We are facing a president who makes use of a permanent coup d’état,” Olivier Faure, leader of the French Socialist Party, told local media Thursday.

Over the weekend, protesters gathered spontaneously in several cities, sometimes clashing with the police.

There were 169 people detained during protests across France on Saturday, according to the Interior Ministry.

In addition, workers in various sectors have been taking industrial action to protest the move.

Authorities in charge of civil air traffic have asked airlines to cancel 20% of their flights on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Air France has warned of flight cancellations in the upcoming days.

Oil refineries and storage facilities are also impacted, with 39% of TotalEnergie workers on strike Monday, according to a statement from the company, and more than 10,000 tons of garbage are littering the streets of Paris as trash collectors have been on strike for the past two weeks.

And the situation could worsen as unions have called for nationwide strikes and protests this Thursday, hoping to bring the country to a standstill.

  • SoNA 2023: Akufo-Addo has lost touch with reality – Asiedu Nketiah

SoNA 2023: Akufo-Addo has lost touch with reality – Asiedu Nketiah

National Chairman for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rubbished the State of the Nations Address (SoNA) delivered by President Akufo-Addo, describing it as inaccurate.

Delivering a presser dubbed “the True State of the Nation’s Address,” on Monday, March 20, 2023, Mr Asiedu Nketiah said the president’s address is a clear indication that he (Akufo-Addo) has lost touch with reality on the ground, since his speech was in contrast with the hardships Ghanaians are experiencing.

“Even before he stepped up to fulfill that Constitutional duty, all Ghanaians were fully aware that the State of our Nation is hopeless, recklessness, corruption, and leadership paralysis define the current state of our nation,” he stated.

President Akufo-Addo on March 8, 2023, delivered the State of the Nation’s Address where he provided an update on the government’s implementation of key policies outlined in the 2022 Budget Statement. The President also touted some achievements of the government despite the ongoing economic crisis.

However, during his speech on March 20, 2023, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) auditorium, Mr Asiedu Nketiah contended that Ghanaians are experiencing the worst economic crisis in the history of the country, given the many challenges bedeviling the state.

“In Ghana today, childhood vaccines are in short supply leading to a measles outbreak. We are going through a draconian debt restructuring programme [where] for the first time on our entire history, thanks to the monumental mismanagement of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government, pensioner bondholders have had to engage in a historic public manifestation as they picketted at the Ministry of Finance.

“All credit rating agencies have declared Ghana bankrupt. Youth employment is at an all time high according to the [recent] population census. Many businesses, banks and industries have collapsed and some have relocated to other countries in the sub-region. There have been massive job losses as a result

He added that: “Corruption has reached epidemic levels as epitomised by the Special COVID-19 audit which was an IMF bailout precondition. The President refuses to cut down the size of his bloated government, human rights violations are on the ascendancy with the recent condemnable killing of a soldier and the unfortunate brutalities in Ashaiman of all which President as the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed forces refuse to speak about government has become impervious to advice.

“We all are living the reality of the worst economic crisis in our nation’s history and there can be no denying of this. The President’s address only served to deepen the anxiety, hopelessness and uncertainty about the future of this country. It was all too clear that this government is grappling with the extent of the crisis they have created let alone figure out what to do to bring us out of the mess.

“President Akufo-Addo failed to convince the Ghanaian people that there is any end in sight to the suffering and pain that his governments recklessness and misguided policies have brought on us. In the end he cut an image of a leader who is hopelessly out of touch with the reality and genuine difficulty of his people,” he added.

You have lost – Ajagurajah replies Osebo

Bishop Asiamah, also known as Ajagurajah, has expressed his disagreement with a statement made by Ghanaian fashion enthusiast, Osebo The Zara man, about his style of fashion.

Ajagurajah on Instagram challenged Osebo’s claim that fashion is all about calculation, stating that Osebo had lost the game in the aspect of dressing to catch attention.

The spiritualist further described the attire he was wearing, which consisted of feathers, indicating that was what style was about and that he felt that he could fly in them.

“Osebo, what are you saying? Osebo, the Zara Man, what are you saying? You said fashion is calculation? Check out the feathers and the feather attire. You have lost. This is a feathered outfit,” he said.

He delved deeper, explaining the colour combinations while noting that the yellow colours in his outfit complemented the yellow feathers sewn on his shoulder and arm areas.

On March 13, 2023, Osebo the Zaraman served more catchy looks that did not conform to modern standards.

He posed in jeans shorts, an off-white blouse, and animal print boots, complemented by a black hat and a handbag.

Osebo admitted in an Instagram post that his style is unusual, and that’s the reason why he makes the news.

He wrote, “This is my definition of fashion, create something unusual with confidence and be bold to step out with it that all. Yen tie obaa da.”

Joseph Kumi, a 19-year-old footballer and the adopted son of the late Christian Atsu, is on the verge of losing his eyes due to cancer.

Joseph, popularly known as Christiano Ronaldo, who resides at Gomoa Dabenyi in the Gomoa East District of the Central region, is three times Milo Champion.

Information gathered by Adom News‘ Kofi Adjei suggests Joseph was diagnosed with the ailment while he was about to travel to Europe to continue his football career.

The talented youngster, who was been catered for by late Atsu at Cheetah FC, now has his right eye gushing out and has been confined to his room for the past year due to financial constraints.

In an interview, Joseph Kumi revealed that Christian Atsu adopted him and supplied him with football kits anytime he comes on holidays in Ghana and was the one who helped him get an agent in Europe.

He said doctors at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital are demanding Ghc20,000 before they can perform surgery for him but they haven’t even been able to raise a penny.

He has, therefore, appealed to Ghanaians to come to his rescue to alleviate him of his daily excruciating pains.

Meanwhile, Joseph’s mother, Akua Akyere, who could not control her tears, said her hope was dashed after she heard Christian Atsu is dead.

She has, therefore, joined her son to appeal to all Ghanaians to help the promising talent recover.

Nicholas Ayeba, who initially supported the boy, has expressed hope that Christiano Ronaldo will come back to life.

  • Iraqis still troubled by the effects of the American war two

Iraqis still troubled by the effects of the American war two

When American soldiers imprisoned Salah Nsaif in Iraq’s infamous Abu Ghraib jail in 2003, he was 32 years old.

He fled his nation twenty years ago and now lives in distant Sweden with his wife and three kids, but the horrors of that country’s war never quite leave him.

“What occurred to me hurt a great deal.
When I left Iraq, it affected my personal relationships, Salah told CNN, adding that he felt imprisoned by his own thoughts.
“I withdrew myself because I didn’t want to see my child or anyone else.
It took me a while to get over my nightmares.

Two decades after the start of the US-led war in the country, Iraqis say that while some of the physical wounds may have healed over time, the psychological trauma from the conflict and its aftermath persists to this day.

On March 20, 2003, US President George W. Bush announced the beginning of the invasion of Iraq under the pretext of disarming it from weapons of mass destruction, a claim that was later debunked.

The invasion of Iraq evolved into an eight-year occupation with American military bases, checkpoints and soldiers dotted all over the country. It was followed by a civil war and a brutal Islamist insurgency that saw Iraq overwhelmed by sectarian violence and communal divisions.

For Salah and his family, the scars of imprisonment are felt to this day, both physically and mentally.

He was stripped naked several times, deprived of food, beaten, taunted by dogs and kept in solitary confinement, he told CNN.

Seeking professional mental health treatment is less common in Arab countries than in Western societies due to a social stigma. That’s why Salah didn’t consult a psychiatrist, he said. Instead, he sought comfort from his family, but it wasn’t always easy.

“You know, in Iraq, we have this culture of not talking to a doctor or a psychiatrist. We don’t even think about it,” he told CNN. “I needed to get out of this circle of fear and anxiety and move forward. At home things were difficult during the first few years with my wife – she became like an alien to me.”

Salah was working as a journalist with the Qatar-based news channel Al Jazeera in Diyala, northeastern Iraq when US forces detained him.

He was never charged with a crime, according to Katherine Gallagher, a lawyer from the US-based Center for Constitutional Rights representing him in a 2008 lawsuit against a US government military contractor that was responsible for the interrogations in Abu Ghraib.

In the years that followed the invasion and the toppling of Saddam Hussein’s government, over 20,000 Iraqi prisoners of war were detained by US army officials.

Approximately 120,000 civilians were killed between the US military invasion and withdrawal, according to Iraq Body Count, an online database that tracks official statements, reports from hospitals and non-governmental organizations to document casualties from the Iraq war.

The Abu Ghraib prison scandal shook the world when it was exposed in 2004. Images of naked, leashed prisoners piled on top of each other in fetal positions as American soldiers smiled at the camera came to define the brutality of the war for many Iraqis.

“They would put a black bag over my head and force me to take my clothes off. They would leave me naked in my cell for days,” Salah said.

In the years that followed, documents that came to be known as the Torture Memos revealed such methods were authorized by the Bush administration under enhanced interrogation techniques. Human Rights Watch said this generally meant torture, sexual assault, and rape.

Abu Ghraib was first used by Hussein to detain Iraqis. The US military took over control from 2003 until 2006. Iraqi officials officially closed it in 2014.

Salah and his family immigrated to Sweden in 2017 and now hold Swedish citizenship. He and his children don’t talk about his ordeal. “They know what happened to me and that I was tortured… but never discussed the details. They just know it from Google.”

Alexandra Chen, a UK-based trauma specialist, told CNN that the trauma of war can be passed down generations, decades after the conflict ends.

“(If) one’s hypervigilance was a key element of them surviving a particularly traumatic period of their life,” she said, then that may “become methylated in your DNA so that your children and your grandchildren, in particular, have that ability to survive.”

Escaping these memories remains difficult for Salah. Twenty years later, he is still waiting for justice.

When the United States withdrew its forces from Iraq in 2011, many Iraqis thought it was the dawn of a new era, one that would heal the horrific remnants of war.

But by the end of that year, a fanatical militant group reemerged that would wreak havoc in the country and far beyond it. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) had by 2014 taken over large swathes of Iraq and Syria, imposing its radical version of Islamic law in the territories it governed.

Abbas Al Duliami was five years old when the US occupied Iraq. He lived in Baghdad for the first few years until his family fled to Syria in 2007 to escape the carnage. Although he was young, he said he was robbed of a childhood.

Chen says this is prevalent in younger Iraqis.

“We assume that when they’re so young they don’t remember anything”, said Chen, adding that science shows the first five years of life are the most sensitive for brain growth.

Abbas returned to Baghdad with his family in 2011 hoping to start over, but ISIS threatened that new life with more upheaval, leading them to move again.

Now finishing his education in the United Arab Emirates, he said nightmares of war continue to haunt him.

“Growing up during these years was hard because I was a kid watching people being kidnapped or killed on the streets for years. It stays with me,” he told CNN.

For those who weren’t fortunate enough to escape, the trauma became a permanent part of their lives.

Ghofran Mohammed, 28, who still lives in Baghdad, was eight years old when the US invaded. She recalls watching soldiers arrest people daily.

She never spoke about the war with a mental health professional and said her family encouraged her to move on from the trauma.

“My parents told me to forget what I saw and continue my life and education after they saw I was traumatized,” she told CNN.

Chen, the trauma specialist, says children can absorb their parents’ distress when they start believing that they are the cause of the distress. That can affect their romantic relationships and their relationships with children, she says.

While therapy helps, she adds, it’s not the solution. “This is not rocket science. And the solution… in addition to the prevention of traumas, is for the wars to stop.”

Netanyahu government makes first climbdown on plan to weaken Israel’s judiciary

The government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a change Monday to a key part of its controversial plans to overhaul the country’s judicial system. Opposition leaders inside and outside the legislature immediately rejected the proposed changes as insufficient. The concession would give Israeli governments less power to select new judges – but still more power than it has now. The lawmaker leading the overhaul process, Simcha Rothman, announced the change to government plans, and also said parliament would delay passage of other elements of the plan until after the parliament’s Passover holiday in April.

    • Background: The original bill to change how judges are selected would have established a selection committee where coalition-appointed members would have a clear majority. The new plan reduces the power of the coalition, giving them a one-seat majority of appointed spots on the judge selection committee. In another concession, it says that once two supreme court judges have been appointed by the committee, further judges can only be selected by a supermajority of the committee.
    • Why it matters: The change announced by the government marks its first climbdown in the face of massive public protests and international pressure. For months, hundreds of thousands of Israelis have regularly taken to the streets to protest the overhaul. They’ve been joined by senior figures in Israel’s security, high-tech, financial and academic fields. Leaders of the Israel’s allies, including the US and Germany, have also expressed concern, calling for “consensus” to be reached on the reforms instead of the government imposing unilateral measures.

Iranian president invited to visit Riyadh by Saudi king – Iranian official

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz has written to Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi inviting him to Riyadh, Deputy Chief of Staff for Political Affairs to Iran’s President Mohammad Jamshidi tweeted on Sunday, adding that Raisi welcomed the invitation and stressed Iran’s readiness to expand cooperation. There has been no confirmation by Saudi Arabia of the letter or invitation. Separately, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said during a news conference on Sunday that the two countries had agreed to hold a meeting between their top diplomats.

    • Background: On March 10, Saudi Arabia and Iran agreed to restore ties in a Chinese-brokered deal seven years after diplomatic relations were severed between the two countries. Riyadh cut ties with Tehran in 2016 after its embassy was attacked following the Saudi execution of a prominent Shiite cleric, Nimr al-Nimr.
    • Why it matters: A rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia could have a significant impact in calming regional tensions after decades of rivalry between the two that saw them engage in proxy conflicts in the Middle East. The Saudi finance minister said last week that it could even spur Saudi investment in Iran.

Yemen’s Houthis and government say prisoner exchange deal reached

The two sides in Yemen’s conflict on Monday said they had agreed to exchange some 880 detainees after talks in Switzerland facilitated by the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross, Reuters reported. Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group said it would release 181 detainees, including 15 Saudi and three Sudanese, in exchange for 706 prisoners from the government, according to statements on Twitter by the head of the Houthis’ prisoner affairs committee Abdul Qader al-Murtada and the group’s chief negotiator Mohammed Abdulsalam.

    • Background: The exchange of around 15,000 conflict-related detainees has been under discussion as a key confidence-building measure under a December 2018 UN-mediated deal known as the Stockholm Agreement. UN special envoy Hans Grundberg told the UN Security Council last week that there were intense diplomatic efforts at different levels to end the fighting in Yemen.
    • Why it matters: There is hope that a deal could facilitate broader efforts to end the hostilities, which have been helped by the resumption of ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia this month. The conflict in Yemen has widely been seen as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

A group of archeologists in the United Arab Emirates on Monday found what they believe to be the oldest pearling town in the Persian Gulf on Siniya Island, just east of the Umm al-Quwain emirate.

The 12-hectare (30-acre) town functioned between the late 6th and mid-8th centuries, predating the Islamic civilization, according to the Umm al-Quwain Department of Tourism and Archeology.

The findings show the town to be one of the “largest surviving urbanized settlements ever found” in what is today the UAE, and is believed to have housed thousands of residents, many of whom relied on the pearling industry. The houses were built from local beach rocks and materials from the surrounding environment and roofs were made of palm trunks.

While other pearling settlements are known to have existed in the region, this one is particularly unique, said Timothy Power, associate professor of archaeology at UAE University. Not only because of its age and size, but also because it was not seasonal, but rather operated year-round, he said.

“This is a different order of settlements, this is a proper town,” Power told CNN, adding that it was densely populated with a range of housing types, and included various socio-economic groups.

Residents of the town were likely Christian, as the settlement is located near an ancient Christian monastery that was discovered just last year, Power said.

The practice of pearling, where divers recover pearls from oysters or mussels from seas and lakes, has been part of the region’s heritage for more than 7,000 years, according to the Umm al-Quwain Department of Tourism.

“We know from historical clauses that there were other important pearling markets in this period,” Power said, but it was clear that pearling was a key industry for this town.

At peak times of the pearling market, huge numbers of people were involved in the industry, Power said. In neighboring Abu Dhabi, he added, almost two-thirds of the male population were involved in pearling in the 19th century.
