No one is starving to death in Ethiopia – PM

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said that people are not starving in the conflict-affected areas of Tigray and Amhara, even though there is a food crisis.

“Mr Abiy said on Tuesday that no one in Ethiopia is dying from hunger. ”

He said that some people may have died because they were sick from not having enough food to eat.

The Prime Minister said that drought is affecting people in many parts of the country like Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia. He also said that we should not make this issue into a political one.

The Federal Ombudsman Institute, which is appointed by the state, said last month that almost 400 people have died of hunger in the northern areas of Tigray and Amhara. The leader of the institute, Endale Haile, told the media that the deaths happened in the last six months.

The EHRC says the government did not give enough help to the people who needed it the most.

The UN says that about 20 million people in Ethiopia need help getting food because of fighting, lack of rain, and floods.

Kanye West impresses fans with performances in Lagos

Kanye West is making his fans in Kenya and Nigeria happy by saying he might have concerts there during his new tour.

West posted on Instagram that he wants to do shows at Eko Energy City in Lagos and Nyayo International Stadium in Nairobi.

West also wanted to perform at the Giza Pyramids in Egypt.

Even though the rapper hasn’t said anything officially, the list of tour dates has made fans in the two countries really excited. Some fans are sharing jokes about the concert on social media.

“Kanye wants to go to Kenya. I think he said he wants to visit the country with the same sounds as his name,” one person from Kenya wrote on X.

Some fans made fun of the rapper and said he should tell them the ticket prices sooner, so they can save money.

People from places like South Africa are upset that they might not get to see their favorite band on tour, especially because big musicians often skip Africa when planning their tours.

  • Putin to be interviewed by Tucker Carlson

Putin to be interviewed by Tucker Carlson

Tucker Carlson, a former Fox News host, says he will soon have an interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

In a video on X, also known as Twitter, Carlson said he wanted to do the interview because he believes that Americans should know all they can about a war that they are involved in.

Mr Putin hasn’t talked to a Western reporter one-on-one since he invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

The Kremlin has not said anything yet.

Several hours later, Russian reports said that the interview had lasted for about two hours and would be released “soon”.

Ukraine’s deputy defense minister Hanna Maliar said: “The only safe interview in this situation is the questioning in The Hague. ”

She said that the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin. They are accusing him of war crimes and illegally sending children from Ukraine to Russia.

Russian state media has been talking a lot about Tucker Carlson’s visit to Moscow, and they have been covering everything he does.

“Interviews like this can have risks, so we have been thinking about it carefully for many months,” Carlson said in his announcement video.

Carlson said he paid for the trip to Russia and did the interview because most Americans don’t know about the conflict that is changing the world, and he blames the mainstream media for it.

Ever since the war in Ukraine started, he said that reporters from Western countries have talked to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky several times, even though he had called Zelensky a “dictator” before.

But they are “excited meetings” that are meant to make Mr. Zelensky’s request for more US involvement in the war sound even stronger, Carlson said.

“That’s not real news – it’s just the government trying to control what people think. ”

At the same time, Tucker Carlson said that no Western journalist has taken the effort to interview Vladimir Putin.

Steve Rosenberg, who reports on Russia for the BBC, said that the BBC has asked the Kremlin for information multiple times in the past 18 months. “We never say ‘yes’. ”

The head of the FT’s office in Moscow, Max Seddon, said it was surprising to say there aren’t enough American reporters covering the Russian side of the invasion when two American journalists are currently in jail for doing just that. Evan Gershkovich from The Wall Street Journal and Alsu Kurmasheva from Radio Free Europe have been in jail since last year before their trials.

Russian journalist Yevgenia Albats said that she and many other reporters had to leave their country to keep working, while Carlson was staying in an expensive hotel room in Moscow.

Russian reporters have been told not to call the situation a “war” and to use the term “special military operation” instead.

Russia attacking Ukraine has caused a lot of damage and suffering to the country and its people.

The United Nations said that Russian soldiers have been causing a lot of harm in Ukraine, including raping people, torturing them, and killing them.

Russia took over four more areas of Ukraine, in addition to Crimea, in 2014.

Tucker Carlson has been a vocal supporter of Mr Putin since the war started. Shortly before Russia attacked, he said that “the main goal of America’s foreign policy is to hate Putin,” but he wanted his viewers to think about why that is.

“Did Putin ever call me a racist. Has he said he’ll get me fired for disagreeing with him. ” Carlson asked as Russian troops gathered on Ukraine’s border. “These are good questions, and the answer to all of them is: No. Vladimir Putin didn’t do any of that.

After Russia attacked, he spoke a little differently in another show and said “Vladimir Putin began this war. ” “He is the reason for what we are seeing tonight in Ukraine. ”

It’s not clear when the interview will happen, but Carlson said it will be posted live and unedited on his X account. Elon Musk, the owner of the platform, said he won’t stop or block the interview.

Tucker Carlson used to be a popular TV host on Fox News, but he suddenly left the channel last year.

While working at the US network, his shows often influenced the ideas and goals of conservatives and the Republican party.

He was really important as the main host of a popular political talk show from 2016 to 2023, and now he has his own show on X.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, the Police Service announced Kuwornu’s interdiction pending a thorough investigation into a video circulating online, where he is purportedly seen engaging in misconduct.

The video in question, which has since surfaced on GhanaWeb, depicts a man identified as Chief Inspector Kuwornu, stationed at Assin Fosu in the Central Region, making critical remarks against President Akufo-Addo. In the footage, filmed at a beer bar, the officer can be heard expressing his desire to meet with the President to discuss what he perceives as misgovernance.

“Mr. President, I want to meet you because I have a discussion. We are saying Mr. President, you are destroying our nation, Mr. President, you have destroyed our nation,” the officer is heard saying in the video.

The officer accuses President Akufo-Addo of incompetence and mismanagement of state resources, alleging that the President has crippled state institutions and neglected the interests of the nation. He calls upon leaders within the nation’s security services to speak out against what he perceives as a lack of effective governance.

“Because we have a role to play; we have a charge to keep. Is it not the president who said that we must be citizens not spectators?” the officer questions in the video.

Chief Inspector Doe further alleges that President Akufo-Addo’s administration has led to the destruction of businesses and state institutions, accusing the government of favoritism towards family and friends in its governance approach.

The emergence of this video has prompted the Ghana Police Service to take swift action, interdicting Chief Inspector Kuwornu pending a thorough investigation into his conduct. The Police Service emphasized its commitment to upholding professionalism and integrity within its ranks, stating that any officer found engaging in misconduct will face appropriate disciplinary measures.

MP attributes loss at Primaries to endorsement of ‘Ken Must Go’ campaign

Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, has attributed his recent defeat in the New Patriotic Party Parliamentary Primaries to his endorsement of the widely supported ‘Ken Must Go’ campaign.

Advocating for the removal of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta amid the country’s economic challenges, Dr Adomako Kissi lost the primary to Elder Emmanuel Tobbin, with a vote tally of 818 to 566.

In an interview on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, Dr Adomako suggested that his support for the ‘Ken Must Go’ campaign may have played a role in his defeat.

He acknowledged multiple factors at play but highlighted his dissenting stance as a potential contributor to his loss.

“I think that there were many factors. One that comes to mind is you know, having a dissenting mind. What I mean by that is that there have been several cases that I had with a dissenting mind and I think that it may have contributed.

“For instance, I am one of the few who stood initially, for ‘Ken must go’. I wouldn’t say that is the one key reason but I think it may have contributed,” Dr Adomako explained.

He also acknowledged that his support for the Alan Kyerematen movement could have played a role in his failure to secure the candidature to represent the people of Anyaa-Sowutuom in the upcoming December polls.

Dr. Adomako Kissi’s admission sheds light on the complexities within the New Patriotic Party as members navigate divergent opinions and allegiances within the party. His defeat underscores the significance of internal dynamics and party loyalty in determining candidates for electoral contests, particularly in the context of contentious issues like the performance of key government officials.

As the NPP prepares for the upcoming general elections, Dr. Adomako’s loss serves as a reminder of the importance of party unity and strategic positioning in securing electoral success.

Man accused of igniting tram during rioting in Dublin

A man has been brought to court for starting a fire on a tram during the Dublin riots in November.

John Tate, who is 61 years old and lives at Iveagh Trust, Kevin Street in Dublin, went to court on Tuesday. He is charged with six crimes connected to the riots.

Chaos happened when three kids and a caretaker were stabbed outside a school on Parnell Square East.

Just a few hours after the knife attack, a group of people destroyed 11 police cars and damaged 13 shops. They also stole from some of the shops during fights with the police.

Three buses and a tram were broken and many police officers were hurt during more than three hours of continuous violence.

Det Sgt Eoghan Byrne told the court that the riots were a never-before-seen act of public chaos and a lot of serious crimes that turned into a big riot very fast.

He said Mr. Tate did not respond to the accusations of causing chaos, starting a fire, and blocking a Luas tram and bus.

In court, it was claimed that the accused was the first person to go past a police line at Parnell Square East, and that he encouraged and led other people to go towards the crime scene outside Gaelscoil Cholaiste Mhuire.

It was said that he started a fire using bags of trash and put them on the Luas tram on O’Connell Street.

Mr Tate is accused of causing trouble and stopping traffic. It is said he threw things at the Irish police.

Detective Sergeant Byrne told the court that Mr. Tate was wearing very noticeable clothes on the night of the riot, and the police have video related to the crimes he is accused of.

Judge Stephanie Coggins said the alleged crimes are very serious and happened during a very serious event.

Mr Tate was allowed to leave jail if he follows certain rules, like paying €5000 in cash (around £4260).

Additional bail rules for Mr. Tate are to check in daily at the police station, give up his passport, provide a phone number within 2 days, stay off the internet, avoid protests, and follow a curfew.

Lawyer Cian McCann said he can’t get bail for his client yet, and he also asked for free legal help.

Mr Tate has to go to court on 13 February.

Retired ACP Benjamin Agordzo explains appearance in Police uniform during coup plot case

Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Benjamin Agordzo, recently acquitted and discharged in a high-profile coup plot case, has provided clarification regarding his appearance in police uniform during court proceedings, stating that it was due to circumstances beyond his control.

Agordzo’s decision to appear in court wearing police uniform sparked criticism from many Ghanaians, who accused him of disrespecting the Ghana Police Service. However, in an interview on Tuesday, February 7, 2024, the retired police officer revealed that his attire was a result of the treatment he received while in custody of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) (formerly BNI).

According to Agordzo, he was directed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to report to the NIB while he was in his police uniform. Upon arrival, he was stripped of his uniform by NIB officers who then detained him. When informed of his court appearance, he was provided only with the same police uniform to wear.

Recalling the events, Agordzo explained, “They (the BNI officers) actually stripped the police uniform together with the cap and everything and then put me in custody… On Wednesday morning, they came and told me that we’re going to court, so I should prepare. In their full glare, I prepared. There were no other clothes to wear. The uniform that I was wearing and brought in was the only thing available, so I wore it.”

Agordzo emphasized that he meant no disrespect to the police and suggested that the public’s criticism stemmed from misinformation. He attributed the situation to the unprofessional conduct of the NIB officers involved in his detainment, suggesting they may have acted hastily or without proper consideration.

“It was the unprofessional conduct of the BNI or whoever was in charge. Maybe they didn’t know what they were doing. Maybe they were so fascinated by the fact that they had gotten me, and therefore they didn’t think through it before sending me to court,” Agordzo stated.

The explanation provided by Agordzo sheds light on the circumstances surrounding his appearance in police uniform and underscores the complexities of his arrest and detention amidst the coup plot case.

Tullow Oil to suspend drilling activities in Ghana in 2024, eyes resumption in 2025

Tullow Oil and its Joint Venture Partners have announced plans to suspend drilling activities in Ghana later in 2024, relying on existing well stock to maintain production at the Jubilee and TEN fields as output declines. The decision comes as the company prepares to procure a new rig, with drilling expected to resume in 2025.

In a statement released ahead of the Group’s 2023 full-year results, scheduled for announcement on March 6, 2024, Tullow revealed that it expects five Jubilee wells—comprising three producers and two water injectors—to commence operations in 2024. This marks the conclusion of the drilling program’s activities, completing approximately six months ahead of schedule due to outstanding drilling performance.

Rahul Dhir, Chief Executive of Tullow, expressed confidence in the company’s trajectory, citing the successful execution of Tullow’s business plan in 2023 as a significant milestone. Dhir anticipates Tullow generating approximately $600 million of free cash flow over the next two years, contributing towards achieving its target of approximately $800 million of free cash flow from 2023 to 2025, with oil prices assumed at $80 per barrel.

Furthermore, Tullow highlighted the debt facility secured with Glencore as validation of its business plan, noting that there are no significant uncovered debt maturities until May 2026.

The company remains steadfast in its focus on leveraging its assets for production growth while emphasizing operational excellence and capital discipline.

As it suspends drilling activities temporarily, Tullow aims to optimize its existing resources to sustain production levels, demonstrating its commitment to prudent resource management amidst evolving market conditions.

Simai Mohamed Said went to a meeting with the party’s ethics committee on Tuesday, but he didn’t say why they wanted to talk to him.

“It’s okay to go to the party’s office, and I’m not the one who speaks at the meetings. You can talk to the chairperson or the secretary general of the committee,” said Mr. Said to reporters right after the meeting.

He quit his job as the tourism minister two weeks ago because he didn’t like the working conditions.

He quit because there isn’t enough alcohol in Tanzania, which is bad for tourism. Tanzania is a popular place for people to visit in Africa.

Yendi MP allegedly threatens GJA President amid journalist attack scandal

President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, has raised alarm over an alleged personal threat he received from the Member of Parliament for Yendi Constituency, Farouk Aliu Mahama

The purported threat comes in the midst of accusations against Farouk Aliu Mahama for assaulting a journalist during a tumultuous incident at the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary primary in Yendi.

Dwumfuor revealed during a press conference on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, that he received a text message from Mahama early in the morning, which he interpreted as a personal threat. The message reportedly stated, “good morning, my lawyers are working on suing the journalist and all involved also for defamation. Rest my case. The name of the game is evidence not just allegations.”

This revelation adds another layer of tension to the ongoing controversy surrounding Mahama’s alleged assault on a journalist during the NPP primary. Dwumfuor expressed his concern over the nature of the message and declared that he perceives it as a personal threat. He asserted that as journalists, they operate based on facts and evidence, not assumptions or suspicions.

“We want to let him know that as journalists we don’t dwell on assumptions and suspicions. We only base on facts and evidence and I see this as a personal threat,” Dwumfuor stated firmly, indicating his readiness to address the matter legally.

Farouk Aliu Mahama has vehemently denied the allegations of assault and has threatened legal action against the journalist who made the accusation. However, Dwumfuor’s assertion of a personal threat from the MP further complicates the situation.

During the same press conference, Dwumfuor issued a ten-day ultimatum to both the Ghana Police Service and the New Patriotic Party, demanding swift action against the perpetrators of the alleged assault. He stressed that if the authorities fail to take action within the stipulated timeframe, the GJA and its allied bodies, including the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Private Newspaper Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), and the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), will consider alternative measures.

“We are giving the NPP, Regional and National, and the Ghana Police Service ten (10) days ultimatum each to hear from them. They should arrest the perpetrators. If they fail, we shall advise ourselves,” the GJA president emphasized.

As the ultimatum looms, all eyes are on the NPP leadership and the Ghana Police Service to ensure that justice is served impartially and expeditiously.

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has issued a stern ultimatum to both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Ghana Police Service following allegations of assault on a journalist, Mohammed Aminu M. Alabira, by the Member of Parliament for Yendi, Farouk Aliu Mahama.

The incident reportedly took place amidst chaos during the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary primary in the Yendi constituency on January 27, 2024. According to accounts, Farouk Mahama and his team purportedly attacked Alabira while he was covering the event.

The media groups demanded justice for Alabira and called on the NPP leadership at both national and regional levels to hold the MP and his associates accountable for their alleged actions. They urged swift action to ensure that those responsible face the consequences of their actions.

In their statement, the media bodies emphasized the urgency of the situation, giving the NPP and the Ghana Police Service a ten-day ultimatum to respond. They called for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and emphasized the need for thorough investigations to ensure justice is served.

Donald Trump’s delaying tactics continue to work despite his lost immunity appeal

Donald Trump faced a defeat in court, but still managed to achieve some victories.

A court decided that Mr. Trump can be charged with a crime for things he did while he was president. The decision took a long time, which means that Mr. Trump’s trial for the attack on the US Capitol in January 2021 has been delayed.

Mr Trump didn’t get new powers while he was president, and the court date has been taken off the calendar.

And we don’t know when it might come back.

This is in line with the ex-president’s plan to slow down the legal process whenever he can, said Neama Rahmani, who used to work for the government as a lawyer.

Mr Rahmani said Trump wants to wait until after the November election for the case to be solved. “If a sitting president wins control of the White House, they can’t be prosecuted. ”

If Trump’s legal team wants to delay things, there are some steps they could take.

They might ask all 11 judges on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals to look at this case again and think about it. It’s not very likely to work because six out of the eight judges would have to agree, and it’s rare for them to do that.

The court says the case about what happened on 6 January can keep going while they think about the request. Maybe they want to avoid waiting more.

However, Trump has other choices he can make.

He can ask the Supreme Court to make a decision about whether to review his case or not. They can choose to delay the trial on 6 January for now.

It seems like the Trump team will ask the Supreme Court for help, because the appeals court gave them until February 12 to get ready.

That’s where there are more chances for the trial to be delayed or for it to continue as planned.

If the highest court doesn’t agree to hear the case, the election interference case could go back to its usual schedule. If that happens, it’s almost certain that the trial will happen at the earliest by election day.

The judge in charge of the trial might decide to put the case on hold until after Americans vote in November.

“Professor David Super, who teaches constitutional law at Georgetown University, said that the Supreme Court probably won’t agree with the former president’s legal arguments because of past court decisions and American legal customs. ”

“He told the media that in Mr Trump’s opinion, the legal power of US presidents would be very similar to that of monarchs. ”

However, if there is a delay and the Supreme Court rules against him, it would be another victory for the former president. If he wins the election in November, his legal problems at the federal level might go away.

After he becomes president, he could tell his Justice Department to stop the cases, or he could pardon himself.

Mr Trump starting his second term in office would be really impressive. However, it would be quite extraordinary for the previous president to swear in on the Capitol steps, where his supporters had protested four years earlier because he lost the election.

  • Kwesi Pratt Jr. accuses Dr Bawumia of betraying Akufo-Addo’s in pursuit of presidency

Kwesi Pratt Jr. accuses Dr Bawumia of betraying Akufo-Addo’s in pursuit of presidency

Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr., has launched scathing criticism against Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, accusing him of betraying President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s trust in his quest for the presidency.

Pratt’s remarks come in response to recent comments made by Dr Bawumia, which Mr Pratt interprets as a deliberate attempt to distance himself from the Akufo-Addo administration.

Expressing his concerns during a panel discussion on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo program on February 6, 2024, Pratt asserted that Bawumia’s recent statements suggest a conscious effort to disassociate himself from the Akufo-Addo government. Pratt highlighted Bawumia’s remarks about being a “driver’s mate” and an “assistant headmaster” as indicative of this distancing strategy.

Pratt emphasized that Bawumia had been deeply involved in all aspects of the government and was privy to key decision-making processes. Therefore, Pratt questioned Bawumia’s attempt to portray himself as merely a subordinate figure within the administration. He argued that if Bawumia felt certain policies needed correction, he should have addressed them directly rather than attempting to deflect blame onto President Akufo-Addo.

“Akufo-Addo brought you from outside the party, supported you in all aspects, and now, at the last minute, because you want to become president, you have betrayed him by saying you are taking a new path and claiming to be an assistant headmaster, which is a complete betrayal,” Pratt remarked during the discussion.

Pratt further criticized Bawumia’s ambiguity regarding his role within the government, suggesting that if Bawumia acknowledges his responsibilities as vice president, there would be no issue. However, Pratt argued that Bawumia’s recent statements raise questions about his loyalty and commitment to the Akufo-Addo administration.

Bawumia’s previous statements, including likening his role to that of an “assistant headmaster” and expressing his own vision and priorities for governance, were cited by Pratt as evidence of Bawumia’s ambitions to pursue the presidency independently of President Akufo-Addo.

  • Israel-Gaza war: Hamas responds to request for ceasefire in Gaza

Israel-Gaza war: Hamas responds to request for ceasefire in Gaza

Hamas said it has given its answer to a plan for a new truce in Gaza.

The information about the deal made by Israel, the US, Qatar and Egypt has not been shared yet.

It was said before that there would be a six-week break, during which more Israeli hostages would be swapped for Palestinian prisoners.

Israel and the US are looking at what Hamas said.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who is in the Middle East, said he will talk about what Hamas said with officials in Israel on Wednesday.

Mr Blinken hasn’t said how the US feels about the response, but President Joe Biden thinks it’s too much, which means the Israeli leaders might not agree to what the group wants easily.

A top member of Hamas told the media that the group gave a good idea in response to the plan but wanted some changes about rebuilding Gaza, bringing people back to their homes, and helping those who had to leave.

The official said that Hamas wanted to change how injured people are treated, including sending them back home and moving them to hospitals in other countries.

The plan was sent to Hamas about a week ago. A person from Hamas told the Reuters news agency that they didn’t respond until Tuesday because they found some parts of the plan confusing.

The Prime Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al Thani, thinks that Hamas has responded in a good way.

The fighting in Gaza started when Hamas fighters attacked southern Israel on October 7th. About 1,300 people were killed and 250 were taken hostage.

More than 27,500 people have died in Gaza. Gaza has been controlled by Hamas and blocked by Israel and Egypt since 2007.

Hamas is banned as a terrorist group in many countries.

For a week in late November, a break in fighting allowed 105 Israeli and foreign people who were being held captive to be released. In return, 240 Palestinians who were in Israeli jails were also set free.

The Israeli military is working on finding Hamas’s leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar. This might make it difficult to make a new deal at this time.

Nevertheless, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing a lot of pressure from people in his own country to make sure the rest of the hostages are released.

The situation in the region is getting worse, which makes Mr. Blinken feel like he needs to move quickly to make progress on the deal when he goes to Tel Aviv.

The US is trying hard to stop a situation from getting worse after a drone strike killed three American soldiers in Jordan last week.

Washington launched air attacks against militia groups in Syria and Iraq that are supported by Iran. They are also saying that there may be more attacks in the future.

The US thinks that a ceasefire agreement in Gaza is the best way to reduce tensions in surrounding areas.

On Tuesday, Israel said that 31 out of the 136 hostages in Gaza were found dead.

Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, who speaks for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), said that the families of the captives had been told and that the authorities will keep working to bring back the rest of the captives.

Mr Hagari said that we have a duty to do what is right, not just in our country but also around the world. This is the direction we will keep following.

  • Strained relations between MPs and DCEs unnecessary – Dormaa East MP reacts to dismissal of 24 DCEs

Strained relations between MPs and DCEs unnecessary – Dormaa East MP reacts to dismissal of 24 DCEs

Member of Parliament for Dormaa East, Paul Twum Barimah, has emphasized the importance of collaboration between Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and fellow lawmakers.

This is in response to President Akufo-Addo’s dismissal of 24 District Chief Executives (DCEs).

The President’s decision, following the ruling party’s parliamentary primaries where 28 incumbent MPs lost their slots, has sparked speculations about strained relations between MMDCEs and MPs.

Addressing the media after being acclaimed as the NPP parliamentary candidate for Dormaa East, Mr. Twum Barimah underscored the need for cooperation over competition between lawmakers and MMDCEs for the progress of their constituencies.

Highlighting his successful working relationship with the DCE, he stressed the importance of a collaborative approach to governance, noting that their cooperation had facilitated development projects and ensured equitable distribution of resources within the constituency.

“Immediately I was sworn in as a Member of Parliament, what I said was that I am a partner and an agent of development to my assembly,” stated Twum Barimah. “So the point is, I don’t expect my assembly or my DCE to bring a document to Accra and be chasing it. It is my duty to chase any document that he brings to Accra.”

He further elaborated on the division of responsibilities, stating that while the DCE identifies challenges and submits documents, it is the duty of MPs to follow up on them at the national level.

Twum Barimah’s remarks highlight the significance of cooperation between MMDCEs and MPs in driving development initiatives and ensuring effective governance at the grassroots level.

Touching on his uncontested acclamation as the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for Dormaa East, Twum Barimah attributed it to his track record of service to the constituents.

Regarding the selection of a running mate for the 2024 elections, he expressed confidence in the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to make a decision that would advance the party’s agenda of “Breaking the 8” and unite party members.

The acclamation ceremony, attended by constituency chairmen in the Bono region, National and regional Party Executives, Imams, Traditional Leaders, and other Parliamentary candidates, marked a significant moment in the political landscape of the region.

Adwoa Safo pushes for inclusion of mothers in national pledge

Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has advocated for the inclusion of mothers in the National Pledge, criticizing the current wording as gender-insensitive.

During a parliamentary session following the recitation of the National Pledge to commemorate the implementation of the new Standing Orders of Parliament, Adwoa Safo pointed out what she perceived as a glaring omission in the pledge. She highlighted the phrase “through the blood and toil of our fathers,” asserting that it overlooks the significant contributions of mothers to the nation’s progress, branding it a gender-insensitive oversight.

“Mr. Speaker, the National Pledge, it talks about ‘through the blood and toil of our fathers.’ Mr. Speaker, it omits mothers,” she expressed. “Mr. Speaker, the mothers also toiled for this country. I think that it is gender-insensitive.”

Adwoa Safo further stressed the importance of acknowledging the role of mothers in shaping the nation’s narrative, particularly in a country where the term “motherland” is commonly used to refer to Ghana. She urged for a more gender-sensitive approach to the National Pledge to reflect the diverse contributions of both genders to the country’s development.

This statement marks Adwoa Safo’s first public speech since her defeat in the recent NPP primaries. Adwoa Safo, a prominent lawyer and former Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament, was surpassed by Mike Oquaye Jnr, who secured 1,194 votes to become the NPP parliamentary candidate for Dome-Kwabenya. Adwoa Safo garnered 328 votes in the election.

Adwoa Safo’s advocacy for the inclusion of mothers in the National Pledge underscores ongoing discussions about gender representation and inclusivity in Ghanaian society. As the nation continues to progress, stakeholders advocate for measures promoting gender equality and recognizing the contributions of all individuals to national development.

Minority Leader warns EC against altering election date and decision to revoke indelible ink use

Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has declared that his caucus will not support any proposal to change the scheduled date for the 2024 elections.

Dr Ato Forson emphasized that there are more urgent issues requiring the EC‘s immediate attention and urged the commission to prioritize essential matters over what he deemed as “unnecessary issues.”

Speaking in Parliament, Dr Ato Forson underscored the Minority’s firm stance against any attempt to alter the election date, asserting that the focus should be on preparing the election calendar and addressing pressing concerns rather than diverting attention to non-essential matters.

Moreover, Dr. Ato Forson conveyed the Minority’s disapproval of the EC’s decision to abandon the use of indelible ink in the upcoming elections, citing significant risks for the integrity of the electoral process. He expressed grave concerns about the potential consequences of this decision, warning of potential chaos at polling stations across the country.

“The use of indelible ink in our electoral process adds another layer to the integrity of elections by ensuring that voters are visibly, transparently, and physically verified in addition to biometric verification,” Dr. Ato Forson emphasized.

The Minority Leader urged the EC to reconsider its decision and prioritize measures that enhance the credibility and transparency of the electoral process. He reiterated that the NDC Minority Caucus in Parliament stands firm in its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of Ghana’s electoral system.

As discussions surrounding the upcoming elections continue, stakeholders remain vigilant in advocating for measures that uphold the principles of democracy and ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

Dr Bawumia urges protection of Financial Data against cyber attacks

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has underscored the importance of integrating cybersecurity measures within the Controller and Accountant General Department (CAGD).

The Vice President emphasized the need for heightened vigilance against cyber threats to maintain the trust of clients and stakeholders.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2024 annual conference of the CAGD, Dr Bawumia, represented by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, highlighted cybersecurity as a critical area requiring special attention amidst increasing digitalization.

He emphasized the necessity for accountants to adapt to evolving technologies and regulations through continuous professional development to effectively combat cyber threats.

Under the theme, ‘Enhancing Economic Growth Through Innovation and Adaptation,’ the two-day conference convened approximately 700 delegates, including heads of accounts from various government bodies and agencies. • Turkey mourns tens of thousands of people killed in earthquake last year

Turkey mourns tens of thousands of people killed in earthquake last year

Many people in Turkey felt sad on Tuesday because they remembered the more than 53,000 people who died in an earthquake there a year ago.

The government organized some events to remember the big disaster that happened a year ago in southern Turkiye. They are calling it the “Disaster of the Century. ”

In Antakya, which is the main city in the southern province of Hatay, upset crowds pushed and shoved with the police while officials were taken to the events. The mayor was told to quit by people shouting at him, and the health minister was booed when he spoke.

In the fog by the Orontes River, people were chanting “Can anyone hear me. ” and “We won’t forget, we won’t forgive,” echoing the voices of those who died in a building collapse last year.

“Mustafa Bahadirli, who is 24 years old and lives in Antakya, said that some people were buried alive. ” We used to call the government ‘father’, but now we feel like we don’t have a father in the government anymore. We were left alone for many days and are still alone.

Sebnem Yesil, who is 22 years old, said bad things about the government and also about opposition politicians like Savas, the mayor.

She said she thinks they have been very rude. “It’s been a year, and now they’ve finally arrived for a ceremony. ” You didn’t listen to us, you didn’t give us any help, at least let us mourn.

After a short time of quiet at 4:17 in the morning. To remember when the earthquake happened, people threw flowers into the river and a band played a song for the people who were hurt.

Hatay, a place between the Mediterranean Sea and the Syrian border, was the most damaged out of 11 provinces in the south when a very strong earthquake hit. The earthquake killed over 59,000 people, including 6,000 in Syria.

People in Adiyaman walked quietly in a group, going past a clock tower that has been showing the time of the earthquake for a year.

President Erdogan supervised a housing lottery for new homes in the city of Kahramanmaras, which was at the center of the earthquake. He also checked the progress of rebuilding the city and relocating thousands of people who are still living in tents and temporary shelters.

“Today, we are having a lottery for 9,289 houses in Kahramanmaras and giving the keys to the new owners,” Erdogan said. He said the government wants to build 200,000 homes in the area affected by the earthquake by the end of the year.

Then the families chosen to receive new homes were called on stage to get the keys from Erdogan. The event was shown on TV all over the country.

Earlier, at 4:17 in the morning, Erdogan wrote on social media that the pain of the disaster still hurts, but he is grateful that the country has passed the test.

Other politicians from a different party are also going to the area. The leader of the Republican People’s Party, Ozgur Ozel, will be at the events in Hatay, and then he will go to Gaziantep and Kahramanmaras.

Schools were shut down for the day in many provinces affected by the earthquake. The governor in Malatya stopped people from having marches or public events for three days, unless they were officially approved.

At the same time, Mads Brinch Hansen, who is in charge of the Red Cross team in Syria, said few things look good for fixing the country after the earthquake.

“We don’t have enough money to consider doing bigger rehabilitation and reconstruction,” he said.

  • Prince Harry leaves for London as his father, King Charles III, receives cancer diagnosis

Prince Harry leaves for London as his father, King Charles III, receives cancer diagnosis

Prince Harry went to visit his dad, King Charles III, at his house in London on Tuesday. This was reported by the British media. This was just one day after the king said that he has cancer.

The king’s youngest son was seen getting out of a car at Clarence House, which is near Buckingham Palace. He had just flown in from Los Angeles.

The two don’t get along well. Harry stopped working for the royal family in 2020 and went to live in California with his wife, Meghan. The king, who is 75 years old, has cancer. He is getting treatment for it. Royal officials said this on Monday.

The news surprised and surprised the whole country. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the illness was found quickly and everyone in the country is hoping for a fast recovery.

Buckingham Palace said on Monday evening that the King has started going to the hospital for treatment for a type of cancer that has not been told to the public. It was discovered while he was in the hospital for his enlarged prostate, but it’s not prostate cancer, the palace said.

“Good news, we found this problem early,” Sunak said on BBC radio. He also said that if he becomes prime minister, he will keep talking to him like usual.

“Many families across the country have experienced the same thing and they understand how important it is to everyone,” Sunak said. “We will support him and hope that he gets better as soon as possible. ”

Less than a year and a half since becoming king, the 75-year-old monarch has stopped appearing in public, but will keep doing his official duties, like meeting with the prime minister. He will not give up his role as head of the country.

The palace said that Charles, who is usually healthy, feels good about his treatment and wants to get back to work soon.

Charles became the new king in September 2022, after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away at the age of 96. She had been the queen for 70 years.

The king is sick and his daughter-in-law Kate, who is a princess, had surgery on her stomach and had to stay in the hospital for two weeks.

Kate is resting and taking a break from her royal work while she gets better. Her husband, Prince William, will be taking care of her and their three children. He is also going to attend a ceremony at Windsor Castle and a charity dinner on Wednesday because he is next in line to be king.

Charles did something different from what is usually done by royal people by talking openly about his prostate condition. For many years, the Royal Family kept quiet about their health.

Sharing a limited amount of information about his cancer diagnosis is also different from what is usually done.

The United Kingdom Monarchs had a lot of control, and they kept their illnesses a secret so people wouldn’t think they were not strong leaders. The royals kept being secretive even after they became more like symbols than rulers.

The British people didn’t know that Charles’ grandfather, King George VI, had lung cancer before he died in February 1952 at 56 years old. Some historians say that the king didn’t know he was very sick.

In the last years of Elizabeth’s life, the public was only told that the queen was having trouble moving around when she started to miss public events at the end of her life. The reason she died was because she was very old.

Public figures often struggle with deciding when and how much to talk about their illness. It’s a hard topic for them. The United States Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin didn’t tell President Joe Biden or other important people that he had prostate cancer and was in intensive care in January for complications after surgery.

Buckingham Palace said that the king has decided to tell people about his illness to stop them from wondering and in the hope that it might help others who are also affected by cancer.

Charles became king and wanted to have fewer senior royals doing ceremonial events for the country. However, with Charles and Kate both unable to work for a while, Prince Harry moved to California and Prince Andrew kept out of the public eye due to his connection to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, the royal family faces the risk of having too much to handle.

William and Charles’ wife, Queen Camilla, will have to do more public events while the king is getting treated.

Currently, there are no plans for senior royals like the queen and the heir to the throne to take over the monarch’s duties, like signing laws and meeting with ambassadors.

  • Haruna Iddrisu slams EC over decision to change election date

Haruna Iddrisu slams EC over decision to change election date

Former Minority Leader and Tamale South MP, Haruna Iddrisu, has joined voices in the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) kicking against the implementation of a new date for the country’s general elections.

Speaking at a Town Hall meeting held as part of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s “Building Ghana Tour” in Gushegu, Haruna Iddrisu asserted that such a move undermines the rights of the electorate and defies common sense.

The legislator, in his address stressed on the fundamental nature of the right to vote, enshrined under Article 42 of the constitution.

He fervently argued that any alteration to the voting time would inevitably impede the electorate’s capacity to fully exercise this sacred right, regardless of the length of the queue.

“It is a common sense matter,” stated Haruna Iddrisu. “Some people can finish voting at 10 am because their numbers are inadequate. It makes common sense that whenever you have a queue of Ghanaians, even up to 11 pm, legitimacy and constitutionalism require that you respect the right to vote.”

Expressing apprehension regarding the potential consequences of the Electoral Commission’s proposed amendment, Haruna Iddrisu underscored the significant constitutional challenge it presents.

He emphasized that changing the voting time would require amending two articles of the constitution, suggesting that achieving consensus in Parliament could pose considerable difficulty.

“We do not think that parliament may be able to build a consensus on that matter because it will require a constitutional amendment of two articles,” emphasized Haruna Iddrisu.

Moreover, he stressed the importance of maintaining the use of indelible ink for the election, underlining its crucial role in preserving the integrity and credibility of the electoral process.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has declared its intention and is making plans to change the election date from December 7 to November 7. The decision follows a proposal from the Seventh-Day Adventist Church for the amendment of the December 7, 2024, election date to a different day.

The SDA church wants the date moved since it is a Saturday and a day of worship for the church. The EC subsequently welcomed the idea and suggested that the voting date be moved to November 7.

An Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting to deliberate on the change of the date for the 2024 general election was held in Accra on Monday, January 29, 2024.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the various political parties that make up IPAC.

The meeting, which started at 10:30 a.m. with the two Deputy Commissioners of the Electoral Commission (EC) -Corporate Services, Dr Eric Bossman Asare; and Operations, Samuel Tettey, at the helm of affairs was afford IPAC members an opportunity to discuss the EC’s proposal to move the election date from the traditional December 7 to November 7 and also make it a holiday.

While the EC maintained that it could go through the needed processes to effect the change of date, some of the political parties said activating such a move in an election year was too short a period.

However, the parties have agreed in principle that the processes for the change in election date could begin after the 2024 elections and be applied in the 2028 elections.

  • Police to give black family detained at gunpoint $1.9 million

Police to give black family detained at gunpoint $1.9 million

A black mom and her four kids who were threatened by police in Colorado will get $1. 9m (£15m) as a result of the settlement.

In 2020, Brittney Gilliam and her family were unfairly stopped in a parking lot. Brittney was with her six-year-old daughter, nieces aged 14 and 17, and her 12-year-old sister.

The event, which was recorded on video, made a lot of people very angry.

Ms Gilliam took legal action against the officers, claiming they were deeply rooted in racism.

The police in Aurora, Colorado, thought they saw Ms. Gilliam’s car being stolen. They were trained to do a risky stop.

They said sorry for what happened and offered to pay for therapy for the kids.

On the day Ms. Gilliam and the girls got arrested, they went to a nail salon but it was closed so they went back to their car.

The police officers came close to the car with their guns ready, while the family was getting in.

On social media, people posted videos showing Ms Gilliam and the four girls lying on the ground in a parking lot.

Ms Gilliam, her 12-year-old sister, and her 17-year-old niece had their hands tied with handcuffs.

The kids are crying and calling for their mom while people ask the police about what happened.

Are your kids okay after that. When someone points a gun at them and makes them lie on the ground. “Even a six-year-old,” Ms. Gilliam said to CBS shortly after.

The police said that the car’s license plate matched the number of a stolen vehicle from a different state.

The police chief, Vanessa Wilson, said that the officers quickly took off the handcuffs from everyone involved when they realized they had made a mistake.

On Monday, the family’s lawyer, David Lane, said that they came to an agreement with the city of Aurora.

He said in a statement that everyone is happy with the agreement.

The incident happened when people were already thinking a lot about how black people are treated by the police in the US. At that time, the Aurora police department was also getting a lot of criticism for the 2019 death of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old black man who died while in police custody.

In 2023, a white ex-police officer was given 14 months in jail for killing McClain.

  • You can be prosecuted, you don’t have presidential immunity – US court tells Trump

You can be prosecuted, you don’t have presidential immunity – US court tells Trump

Donald Trump can be charged for trying to change the 2020 election result, as the court says he doesn’t have immunity as a president.

Mr Trump said that he shouldn’t be charged with a crime for things he did while he was president.

On Tuesday, a court in Washington DC rejected that argument.

This is a problem for Mr. He has always said he can’t be sued while he’s president. But now he’s facing many lawsuits.

The old president plans to ask for a new decision because he disagrees with the current one. If he does, the case might end up in the Supreme Court, where there are more conservative judges than liberal ones.

US Special Counsel Jack Smith says that Mr Trump, who is 77 years old, is being accused of working with others to try to change the result of Joe Biden winning the 2020 election. He is also accused of doing illegal things to try to stay in his job as president.

The trial for that case was supposed to happen on 4 March, but it was delayed because they are waiting for a decision on the immunity claim.

It might take a long time if the case goes to the Supreme Court, maybe weeks or even months.

  • Houthis allege more assaults on ships in Red Sea

Houthis allege more assaults on ships in Red Sea

The Houthi group in Yemen has launched missiles at two ships in the Red Sea, even though the US and UK have attacked them.

Abdul Malik al-Houthi, the leader of the group, said that if the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza doesn’t stop, his group will make the situation worse.

The Houthis attacked the Star Nasia and Morning Tide ships.

The ship called Star Nasia from Greece got hurt, but all the crew are okay, said a Greek official to Reuters.

Furadino Shipping Ltd, the British owner of the Morning Tide, said that there was a big bang near the ship, but the ship was okay, no one got hurt, and it kept going on its journey.

The group attacked after the US and UK did air strikes recently. The US hit two explosive surface vehicles on Monday.

The US said they hit Houthi missiles in previous attacks over the weekend. More than 30 places were hit in the third wave of UK and US attacks on Saturday.

The UK maritime agency received reports of a ship being attacked in the Red Sea near Hodeidah, Yemen, just after midnight.

British maritime security company Ambrey reported that a cargo ship owned by a British company and sailing under a Barbados flag was attacked and damaged while sailing at sea.

The leader of a UK warship called HMS Diamond, which has been helping to protect merchant ships from Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, said on Tuesday that the situation in the area is very tense.

“Ships in the navy are shooting every day,” Peter Evans stated on Tuesday.

The Houthis, who are friends with Hamas, consider all Israeli, US, and British ships as fair targets because of Israel’s attack on Hamas in Gaza. They say they are only going after ships connected to these countries.

Since November, the group has attacked many ships in the Red Sea, which is a very busy shipping route. They control a big part of Yemen.

These attacks have made international trade slower and people are worried that there won’t be enough supplies.

Railway metal theft rampant in Amasaman-Kutunse – Assemblyman claims

Some residents in Amasaman-Kuntunse are reportedly stealing fixed railway metals.

The Assemblyman in the Amasaman-Kutunse has raised concerns over the rampant theft of fixed railway metals in their community. He reported that individuals are unlawfully removing these metals for sale.

He further noted that despite repeated appeals from the assemblyman and efforts to escalate the issue to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), no concrete action has been taken to address the situation, leaving residents frustrated and alarmed.

The assemblyman of the area has therefore sounded the alarm over the brazen theft of railway metals, warning that the continued removal of these essential infrastructure components poses a serious risk to public safety and disrupts critical transportation networks.

  • Cult leader from Kenya accused of 191 killings

Cult leader from Kenya accused of 191 killings

A leader of a religious group in Kenya has been accused of killing people. The bodies of over 400 people were found buried in a forest in the eastern part of the country.

Survivors and families of those who were hurt say Paul Mackenzie told his followers to stop eating so they could “go see Jesus”.

He and 29 other people said they did not do the crime in a court in the town of Malindi by the ocean.

Mackenzie has been accused of doing scary and mean things to kids, but he says he didn’t do it.

The police and lawyers think that, besides not having enough food, some people may have been killed by choking, not being able to breathe, or being hit with a hard thing.

30 people are accused of killing 191 others.

“I’m still afraid of him,” one person who survived the incident told the BBC when asked what she would say to Mackenzie if she ever saw him.

“I never want to see him,” said the 29-year-old mom with four kids.

Neema, who is using a different name, used to go to the Good News International Church in Malindi. But the church was shut down in 2019.

In 2022, she went to Shakahola, a forest about 70km (43 miles) west of the town, because she heard that the church leader had moved there with other members of the church.

Shakahola has very few people living there and is being watched by the police all day and night. The police are investigating it as a crime and nobody can go in.

At first, the worshippers went there and then came back home. But starting in late 2022, the followers say they were not allowed to go.

Neema was having her fourth baby and was only two months along when she went to the forest for the last time. She said she couldn’t leave and the guards kept hurting and forcing women to have sex.

“The speaking stopped,” she said. “They said we’re finished learning and we’re just waiting to see Jesus. ”

At first, the people in the forest would get a little bit of tea and a piece of bread for breakfast.

    That’s all for today.

But later, Neema said they were told that there would be no more food or water.

“We would go into the bushes and gather wild berries to eat when the guards stopped to have their meals,” she said.

They would also pick up water from the ground and drink using their hands.

When she couldn’t take it anymore, she made a plan to run away with two of her friends. Coming up with a plan was hard because we weren’t allowed to talk in groups. They had to be quiet.

They waited for the guards to take their usual break, then they closed the door to their hut, made a hole in the back wall, and ran away.

“We were not strong,” Neema said.

However, they kept going because they were desperate to get away.

Fortunately, when they reached the main road, they found a driver who gave them a ride to the hospital.

Many people, including lots of kids, were not as fortunate.

They were the first group to decide not to eat until they fell asleep, as told by the survivors.

Women were supposed to obey them.

Changawa Mangi is an old man from Shakahola village.

He said he met Mackenzie when he went to buy land there because he wanted to start farming.

“We said hello to him. ”

Over time, the people who lived there noticed that Mackenzie often had a lot of guests.

That’s when they discovered he was in charge of a church, but it didn’t bother them.

Their presence helped local businesses because the church’s followers shopped there.

But that suddenly stopped. Mackenzie’s friends no longer went to the village stores. Then the signs that something bad might happen soon started showing up.

Mr Mangi said that three young people came to his house asking for help.

They looked very thin. So, he gave them food to eat.

Mr Mangi said one of them had diarrhea for three days, and it looked like soil.

The leader told the government about the problem, but they were slow to respond.

The young men from the village made a plan to ride their motorbikes into the area. But they were greeted with anger, pushed away by the guards and had two motorcycles burned.

It became clear that they could only get inside with police help.

Francis Wanje, a 59-year-old teacher from Mombasa, went to check if his daughter and her family had moved to the forest because he heard rumors about it.

He told the police but they didn’t do anything right away.

What he saw in Shakahola surprised him a lot.

He couldn’t save some of his grandchildren in time, but he found his nine-year-old grandson.

“He said he saw [his brothers and sisters] die. He saw them not getting enough food from their mom and dad. It’s a story he will always remember. ” “He won’t forget. He thought he would be the next one, but luckily he was saved,” Mr. Wanje said to the BBC.

The mother of the boy, who is Mr. Wanje’s daughter, and her husband are still missing. He also saved another kid he found there.

Mr Mangi also assisted in the rescue work.

“Some people looked weak and like they might die soon,” he said.

Some people were stronger but didn’t want any help. They asked Mr Mangi: “Why are you bothering us when we want to go see Jesus. You will also die someday, won’t you. ”

When Stephen Mwiti, a 45-year-old dad with six kids, found out about the rescue, he thought he might learn about what happened to his children. His wife had taken them to the forest.

He showed a photo of the family to some of the people who were saved.

They confirmed his children’s names and told him the very sad news. “They told me that my kids are gone. They were not given enough food and died.

They told Mr Mwiti that the children – Jacob, Lillian and Angelina – had been buried with seven other people in a large grave.

Hellen and Samwel were saved, but they hadn’t eaten for four days and thought they might have died before they talked to their worried father.

One more baby born in Shakahola also passed away.

Neema, the lady who ran away, said that mothers would be told not to feed their babies milk so that they would also “go to Jesus”.

The cult said not to use modern medicine and told members not to vaccinate kids.

Mackenzie and his friends are in jail after he turned himself in to the police last April. The bodies of people were found in the forest.

They said they didn’t make anyone go without food. At one time, Mackenzie told the court that the police didn’t give him any food when he was in custody.

A BBC review of Mackenzie’s sermons on video does not have him telling people to fast, but he talks a lot about followers giving up important things, even their lives.

But out of all the 400 bodies in the morgue, only 39 have been identified using DNA testing and connected with their families.

Other family members are still suffering through a painful wait.

Mr Mwiti said that justice can’t bring back his family.

  • I was caught off guard by the £1,000 Rwanda wager – Sunak

I was caught off guard by the £1,000 Rwanda wager – Sunak

The prime minister was surprised when he agreed to bet £1,000 on his policy about Rwanda.

Rishi Sunak said he doesn’t like to take risks, but he also said it wasn’t a mistake to promise deportation flights before the next election after shaking hands with Piers Morgan from TalkTV.

On BBC Radio 5 Live, Mr. Sunak said he was trying to show that he is fully committed to the policy.

Labour said it proves that he doesn’t understand the needs of working people.

Opposition parties criticize Prime Minister for betting £1,000 on Rwanda.
What is the UK going to do with asylum seekers by sending them to Rwanda.

MrSunak said he understands the financial struggles of regular families and doesn’t agree with people who say he doesn’t.

The money raised from the bet will go to charity and it is more than the £900 payments given to households on means-tested benefits.

The prime minister wanted to reduce inflation by half by the end of last year because people were struggling with high living costs. He said that inflation went down from 11% to 4%, which makes it easier for families to afford things.

When asked if he knew about the struggles of poor families, Mr. Sunak said he felt upset to hear that some parents don’t have enough money to buy proper baby formula for their babies.

He said that reducing taxes helped families who work, and also gave a lot of money to help the people in society who need it the most.

“He said that many people are getting the help they need. ”

The Prime Minister promised to keep prices from going up and to send some people seeking asylum to Rwanda. It is meant to stop people from crossing the Channel, and is an important part of Mr Sunak’s promise to “stop the boats”.

However, the plan has been delayed because of legal problems, and no flights to deport people have taken off yet.

Mr Sunak said he is really committed to this policy and really wants to make it happen in parliament and get it started.

The government wants to make Rwanda a safe country with a new law. But the House of Lords needs to agree to it first, and some people there don’t like the idea.

The government still wants to have flights taking off by the spring.

During an interview on TalkTV, Mr. Morgan dared the PM by saying, “I bet you £1,000 for a refugee charity that you won’t get anyone on those planes before the election. ”

MrSunak said, “I want to help people get on planes” as he shook hands with the presenter.

MrSunak thinks there will be an election in the second part of this year. And it has to happen by the end of January 2025.

Opposition parties have criticized Mr. Sunak for making the decision.

Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper said that when people get an unexpected bill of £1,000, they worry about how to pay their mortgage and buy food for their children.

The prime minister doesn’t realize how important that much money is. Sunak is really disconnected from reality.

The SNP said they told on Mr Sunak for maybe breaking the rules for ministers with the “disgusting” bet.

The party’s Cabinet Office spokeswoman, Kirsty Blackman, has asked for an investigation into whether Mr Sunak broke the rules for government ministers. She wrote to the PM’s independent adviser, Sir Laurie Magnus, and Cabinet Secretary Simon Case.

In her letter, she talked about the rules that say ministers should make sure there is no problem between their job and their personal interests. They also should not take any gift that could make people think they are not making fair decisions or owe something to someone.

Another tragic accident on Pokuase-Amasaman road claims two lives

A devastating collision on the Pokuase-Amasaman road has resulted in the loss of two lives.

According to eyewitness accounts, the accident, which involved three vehicles, unfolded in a harrowing sequence of events, leaving road users very shocked.

The incident, which occurred on February 6, 2024, saw a black Honda vehicle collide with a sprinter bus, causing the bus to veer off course and collide with a tipper truck.

The force of the impact was so severe that the sprinter bus was wedged beneath the tipper truck, trapping occupants inside.

Eyewitnesses recount a scene of horror as they tried their best to rescue victims of the accident who were trapped in the vehicles while they waited for emergency services to arrive at the scene.

Despite the effort to save the situation, two individuals tragically lost their lives in the aftermath of the collision.

  • Farmers in Spain honk horns and wave Spanish flags as they join protest

Farmers in Spain honk horns and wave Spanish flags as they join protest

Farmers in Spain are protesting with other farmers in Europe all over the country.

Similar to other farmers, they want the European Union to be more flexible, have stricter rules for products from non-EU countries, and receive more support from their government.

In many areas, they blocked roads and caused big problems for drivers.

There will be a big protest in the middle of Madrid later this month.

On Tuesday, farmers in Spain’s northern countryside drove tractors in groups, honked horns, waved Spanish flags, and held signs.

They also marched in the northeast part of Catalonia, the southern area of Andalusia, and Extremadura in the west.

Farmers in Spain are unhappy about the same things as farmers in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, and other countries that have been protesting.

They say that the rules of the EU’s farming policy and the high prices of fuel and energy make it hard for them to make money.

Esteban, a farmer who grows wheat and barley, said that it costs a lot of money to produce these crops. He was protesting in Aranda de Duero. “You have to spend money on fertiliser, pesticides, and fuel – it’s really hurting us. ” We have to spend a lot of money to buy things, but we sell them for a lower price.

French farmers are angry at Spanish producers for not following European Union rules and selling their products at a lower price, which is causing them to lose money. Ségolène Royal made some people mad by saying Spanish organic tomatoes are not really organic. Because Spanish farmers and food industry were very angry, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez asked Ms Royal to taste a Spanish tomato.

However, Spain’s farmers also complain about countries outside the EU, like Morocco, because they can sell their products for less money since they don’t have to follow the same rules about the environment and health.

Estrella Perez, a farmer who raises animals and grows cereal, said that we have to follow many rules and regulations for cleanliness that products from non-EU countries don’t have to follow.

“We want farming to have a good future, but we don’t see it happening right now. ”

The situation for Spanish farmers has gotten worse because of drought. In many parts of the country, there hasn’t been enough rain lately, and this is making it hard for farmers to grow their crops. Spain makes the most olive oil in the world, but prices are higher because there is not enough being made. Last week, Catalonia said there is a big problem with not enough water because it hasn’t rained much for three years. This is the longest time with little rain ever.

In other places, Italian farmers have been coming together for a week from the north to the south. They are also protesting against rules from the EU and too much paperwork. They are going to meet up in Rome at the end of this week.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni supports them and says that the EU’s Green Deal will affect farmers’ lives more than others. But farmers are also worried about the government’s plan to stop giving tax breaks to the farming industry.

On Tuesday, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she wants to cancel a plan to reduce the use of pesticides because it has caused a lot of disagreement.

The Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander De Croo, is happy about the announcement. He thinks it’s important for our farmers to be part of making farming more sustainable. This is part of our commitment to make the Green Deal happen.

  • Court ‘slaps’ son of former Minister with GHS 20K fine for challenging father’s marriage

Court ‘slaps’ son of former Minister with GHS 20K fine for challenging father’s marriage

The High Court at Cape Coast has issued a directive to former Education Minister Professor Dominic Fobih, urging him to pardon his son and nephew for their objections to his marriage to a 30-year-old woman, Mary Nyamekye Oduro.

In a recent ruling reported by Dennislaw.com, the court declared that there were no valid grounds for the opposition raised against the 80-year-old professor’s union with Mary Nyamekye, whom he loves.

The case, which gained widespread public attention and controversy in May 2023 following the viral video of the former minister’s traditional wedding, saw objections based on concerns about the significant age gap between Professor Fobih and his bride, as well as doubts about Mary’s intentions.

Objectors argued that the marriage was irrational, citing Professor Fobih’s recovery from a stroke and the perceived potential for marital discord due to the age difference. They also expressed suspicions about Mary’s motives, alleging infidelity and manipulation.

Furthermore, claims regarding a prior engagement with one Beatrice Boateng were addressed by the court, confirming that the marriage had been dissolved and dismissing the objectors’ arguments as unsubstantiated.

Ultimately, the court ruled in favour of Professor Fobih and Mary Nyamekye, dismissing the objections as lacking merit. In addition, the court urged Professor Fobih to forgive his son, Dr. Nick Fobih, and nephew, Nicholas Fobih, and imposed financial penalties of GHC20,000 and GHC 20,000 on the objectors, respectively.

The ruling marks a resolution to the highly publicized dispute surrounding Professor Fobih’s marriage, emphasizing the importance of legal recourse and the protection of individuals’ right to marry based on mutual consent and affection.

As the case concludes, attention now shifts to the aftermath of the court’s decision and the potential reconciliation between Professor Fobih and his family members, as well as the ongoing journey of the newlywed couple as they navigate their future together.

First Vice President to Become Presidential Candidate of the NPP: Unlike previous instances in the NPP’s history, Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy marks the first time a Vice President has risen to become the party’s presidential candidate, showcasing a unique trajectory in his political career.

First Muslim President of Ghana: Should Dr. Bawumia emerge victorious in the 2024 elections, he would become Ghana’s first Muslim President, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s history of religious representation at the highest level of governance.

First Muslim to Lead Both Major Political Parties: Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy extends beyond party lines, as he becomes the only Muslim to lead both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), highlighting his broad appeal and national significance.

  • Russian attack on Ukrainian hotel kills two-month-old baby boy

Russian attack on Ukrainian hotel kills two-month-old baby boy

A baby boy who was two months old died and his mother got hurt when a missile from Russia hit a hotel in the north-eastern part of Ukraine, according to officials.

The baby was rescued from the collapsed building in Zolochiv village, according to the governor of Kharkiv region, Oleh Synehubov.

Two more women got hurt when Russia launched two S-300 missiles. The missiles hit the hotel and buildings close by.

The area of Kharkiv has been facing more and more attacks since the end of 2023.

Zolochiv is only 20km (12 miles) from the Russian border, and Ukraine’s air defenses can’t protect it very well because it’s too close to Russia.

The missiles that hit the hotel on Tuesday were made to defend Russia’s air space, but were changed to target Ukraine on the ground. They are thought to be less expensive than better-targeted cruise missiles.

In the city of Kharkiv, a hotel was hit by missiles. Many people, including journalists, were hurt. It happened last month.

Ukrainian soldiers fought back against Russia’s attack in late December by launching a deadly assault on the city of Belgorod, which is only a short drive from the border.

In another news, Ukraine’s security service, SBU, has arrested five people suspected of being part of a Russian spy group.

The SBU said that five people, who are currently or used to work for the main intelligence and foreign intelligence agencies, were involved. They are accused of giving information to Russia’s FSB about the military, energy plants, and where US-made rockets are located.

Russia has been fighting a big war in Ukraine for almost two years, but they haven’t been winning much on the battlefield after the first few weeks.

Russian soldiers are trying really hard to take control of the town of Avdiivka in the east. They want to get to the city of Donetsk, which is controlled by Russia.

The town is almost empty and most of its buildings are destroyed.

Ukraine didn’t gain much land in their counter-attack last summer. President Volodymyr Zelensky said he is thinking about replacing some of the leaders of the country.

Many people think that he is going to remove the very liked leader of the armed forces, Gen Valerii Zaluzhnyi, who said in November that the war was stuck and not moving forward.

If we want to be successful, we all need to be leaders and work together to achieve victory. The president told Rai TV that we must not lose hope or give up in despair.

The US government wants to give Ukraine $60 billion in aid, but some members of Congress are stopping it from happening. They are doing this because they are also trying to make a law for border security, and they have connected the two issues together.

The European Union agreed to give Ukraine 50 billion euros (about 43 billion pounds) in aid over the next four years. Josep Borrell, who is in charge of the EU’s foreign policy, visited Kyiv on Tuesday to show that the EU strongly supports Kyiv as the war approaches its third year.

Confusion rocks PAC meeting as NSA boss, accountant struggle to explain why monies were put in different accounts

Drama unfolded at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) meeting on February 5, 2024, as the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Professor Peter Twumasi, and the NSA’s chief accountant faced intense scrutiny during regarding the lodgement of funds received by the institution during the Christmas festivities.

The interrogation, led by Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam Nartey George, and Committee Chairman, James Klutse Avedzi, exposed discrepancies in the handling of funds totaling GHS250,000 raised from renting out facilities at the Accra Sports Stadium during the Christmas period.

Sam George disclosed that checks amounting to GHS250,000 were received from various entities for non-sporting activities at the Accra Sports Stadium in 2023.

He questioned whether these funds were deposited into the NSA’s central account as required or if they were split between regional accounts.

The NSA’s chief accountant admitted that part of the funds was lodged in Accra while the remainder was deposited in Kumasi, citing the issuance of invoices as the reason for the split. However, his responses failed to satisfy the committee’s inquiries.

Chairman Avedzi intervened, expressing dissatisfaction with the explanations provided and characterizing the situation as “a mess.”

He recommended further investigation and corrective measures to address the apparent irregularities in fund management within the NSA.

During the hearing, Professor Twumasi attempted to clarify the matter but faced challenges in convincing the committee members regarding the rationale behind the payment allocations.

In light of the revelations, the committee emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in the management of public funds, particularly within government agencies such as the NSA. The findings from the hearing will be included in the committee’s report, with potential recommendations for remedial action to rectify the identified deficiencies in financial management practices within the NSA.

As the investigation unfolds, stakeholders await the committee’s report and any subsequent actions aimed at ensuring proper oversight and accountability in the handling of public funds by government institutions.

Deadly wildfires rage in Chile, leaving hundreds missing

Many people are lost and many homes are being burned by wildfires in Chile’s Valparaíso region.

More than 120 people died in the fires, and thousands of homes were destroyed.

President Gabriel Boric said the fire was the worst disaster in the country since the earthquake in February 2010, where more than 500 people died.

The fires made a lot of smoke that could be seen from space in pictures taken by satellites.

Last week, there were fires in Viña del Mar and Valparaíso because it was very hot. Normally, these towns are cooled by the sea.

Both cities and the town of Quilpué to the east are covered in smelly smoke from the forest fires in the nearby hills.

  • Journalist accuses Ofori-Atta, Gabby Otchere Darko of sabotaging Bawumia’s presidential bid

Journalist accuses Ofori-Atta, Gabby Otchere Darko of sabotaging Bawumia’s presidential bid

A journalist from Peace FM, Kwabena Marfo, has leveled serious allegations against Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Gabby Otchere Darko, accusing them of obstructing the presidential aspirations of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking on Neat FM’s Morning Show on February 2, 2024, Marfo expressed concerns over the actions of Ofori-Atta and Otchere Darko, particularly in an election year where the NPP is aiming to secure victory and retain power.

Marfo highlighted the traditional pre-election strategy of governments, which typically involves reducing prices of goods and services to curry favor with the electorate. However, he argued that Ofori-Atta’s imposition of additional taxes during an election year could harm the ruling party’s chances at the polls.

He also criticized Otchere Darko’s unexpected announcement of withdrawing from active politics, particularly given his significant role in the NPP and his contributions to the administration of his uncle, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Marfo questioned the timing of Otchere Darko’s decision, stating, “Now that Nana Addo is no longer in office, Otchere-Darko is stating that he will no longer be active in politics. However, at this critical time when the NPP is aiming to ‘break the 8’ with Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia as the flagbearer, leaving politics is not fair.”

He further alleged that the actions of Ofori-Atta and Otchere Darko amount to sabotage against Bawumia’s presidential ambitions, stating, “Now, he is departing, and his brother Ken Ofori-Atta is also making similar moves.

Traditionally, in an election year, governments reduce prices of goods and services to gain favor from the electorate. However, Ken Ofori-Atta is now imposing more taxes on us. I feel they are actively sabotaging Dr. Bawumia.”

Marfo’s accusations have raised eyebrows within political circles, prompting discussions about the internal dynamics of the NPP and the potential impact on the party’s electoral fortunes in the upcoming elections. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders await responses from Ofori-Atta, Otchere Darko, and other relevant parties involved in the controversy.

  • TUC proceeds with protest plans despite reported withdrawal of VAT on electricity

TUC proceeds with protest plans despite reported withdrawal of VAT on electricity

Trades Union Congress (TUC) remains steadfast in its preparations for a protest following the imposition of Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity consumption exceeding the lifeline threshold, despite reports of a potential withdrawal of the controversial tax.

Joshua Ansah, Deputy Secretary-General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), reiterated the union’s commitment to organizing the demonstration during an appearance on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme on Monday. While acknowledging rumors of the government’s decision to withdraw the 15% VAT on electricity, Ansah emphasized that the TUC had not received official confirmation.

“The government has not informed us, neither have we met with them to officially tell us their intention to withdraw the tax. We only heard it on social media, and trust me, we will not rely on social media to make decisions. So we are still preparing our demo until we get an official communique from government regarding the withdrawal,” Ansah stated.

The imposition of VAT on electricity consumption beyond the lifeline threshold has sparked widespread criticism from Organised Labour, civil society groups, and various segments of Ghanaian society. While the government has defended the tax as part of its COVID-19 recovery program, opponents argue that it will exacerbate the socio-economic hardships faced by Ghanaians.

Organised Labour has been at the forefront of calls for the withdrawal of the VAT on electricity, citing its adverse effects on the already burdened populace. Despite the reported withdrawal of the tax, the TUC remains vigilant, emphasizing the need for official communication from the government before altering their protest plans.

The controversy surrounding the VAT on electricity underscores broader concerns about the impact of government policies on the welfare of citizens. As tensions persist, stakeholders await further developments and official statements from both the government and the TUC regarding the fate of the contentious tax and the planned protest.

  • Accra businessman remanded for allegedly defrauding individuals in Visa scam

Accra businessman remanded for allegedly defrauding individuals in Visa scam

A businessman residing in Gbawe, Bernard Oduro Takyi, finds himself in legal turmoil after being accused of defrauding two individuals of $27,000 under the guise of facilitating USA visas.

The allegations, which involve forgery of official documents, have landed Takyi in Police custody following a ruling by the Accra Circuit Court.

The court heard that Takyi allegedly deceived Gabriel Kwame Ntim and Prince Kofi Osei, both residents of Kumasi and Accra respectively, promising to secure visas for them and others within a short period.

The accused purportedly assured the victims that their names would be included in the visa applications, leading Ntim to pay $13,000 and Osei $14,000 on separate occasions in April and May 2023.

In a troubling turn of events, Takyi is accused of fabricating entry and exit stamps from Singapore, Mauritius, Turkey, and South Africa in the complainants’ passports without their knowledge.

Additionally, he allegedly forged letters from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), falsely introducing Ntim as a strategic partner for real estate investors and Osei as a “Metro Climate Change Management Officer.”

Despite Takyi’s plea of not guilty, the Prosecution, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Maxwell Oppong, vehemently opposed bail, citing the seriousness of the charges.

The court, presided over by Samule Bright Acquah, acceded to the Prosecution’s request, remanding Takyi into Police custody until the next hearing scheduled for February 12, 2024.

According to the Prosecution, Takyi submitted the forged documents to the Regional USA Embassy in Madagascar, leading to visa approvals for Ntim and Osei.

However, the Embassy later detected the forgery and revoked the visas, prompting the victims to report the incident to the Police on December 22, 2023.

The case underscores the risks associated with fraudulent visa schemes and the importance of vigilance when engaging in such transactions.

As the legal proceedings unfold, authorities are urging the public to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of documents and promises made by individuals offering visa assistance services.
