  • High Court obtains warrant for video trial of Dr Ato Forson, others accused over alleged financial loss to state

A High Court in Accra has taken a significant step in ensuring the continuity of the trial involving Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, and two others accused of causing financial loss to the state by obtaining a warrant from the Chief Justice to establish a video link for the proceedings.

This development follows concerns about the health condition of one of the accused, Dr Sylvester Anemana, a former Chief Director at the Ministry of Health. Dr. Anemana has secured permission to undergo a medical procedure in India, prompting the court to explore alternative methods to prevent trial delays.

Presided over by Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, a Court of Appeal Judge sitting as an additional High Court Judge, the court opted for the establishment of a video link to accommodate Dr. Anemana’s participation in the trial remotely.

Dr. Anemana, along with Dr Ato Forson and private businessman, Richard Jakpa, faces charges of wilfully causing financial loss of €2.37 million to the state through a contract to purchase 200 ambulances for the Ministry of Health. Questions have arisen regarding whether the purchased vehicles met the requirements outlined in the approved purchase agreement by parliament.

The trial, which had experienced multiple adjournments due to Dr. Anemana’s ill health, now seeks to ensure his active participation in the proceedings. The trial judge emphasized the importance of Dr. Anemana’s mental presence for the trial to proceed effectively.

With the establishment of the video link, Dr. Anemana will join the proceedings virtually, allowing for the continuation of the trial without further delays.

The case has been adjourned to February 20, 2024, with additional dates scheduled for the continuation of the trial. Dr. Anemana’s passport was released by the court on January 23 to facilitate his travel to India for medical treatment, as requested by his lawyer through an affidavit.

The release of the passport, held by the court’s registry as part of the bail conditions granted to the accused at the onset of the case, underscores the court’s commitment to ensuring the accused’s access to necessary medical care while also ensuring the progression of the trial.

Former President Mahama unveils 60 policies to transform Ghana – NDC says

National Democratic Congress (NDC) has revealed that former President John Dramani Mahama has outlined a comprehensive set of 60 policies aimed at achieving his vision for Ghana if he is elected president in January 2025.

These policies were unveiled during Mahama’s nationwide campaign tour dubbed “Building the Ghana, We Want” campaign, where he visited various constituencies and regions across the country.

Mahama, who is the flagbearer of the NDC, has taken his campaign to several regions, including the Eastern, Ashanti, Western, Upper East, Northern, and Bono Regions.

Some of the key policies outlined by Mahama include the implementation of a 24-hour economy strategy to maximize productivity and efficiency, stop the economic decline, reform the Bank of Ghana, and prioritize local participation in various sectors to generate more jobs for the youth.

Additionally, Mahama plans to actively attract private sector investors to partner with the government in productive sectors for job creation, set standardized borrowing limits to prevent excessive debt accumulation, complete abandoned projects, establish a Governance Advisory Council to improve political governance, and run a lean and efficient government by appointing not more than 60 ministers and deputy ministers.

Furthermore, Mahama aims to abolish the payment of ex-gratia and cut out waste and ostentation in government expenditure.

The unveiling of these policies underscores Mahama’s commitment to addressing critical issues facing the country and charting a path towards sustainable development and inclusive growth.

In a statement, the NDC emphasized Mahama’s track record and leadership qualities, expressing confidence in his ability to steer the country towards prosperity if given the opportunity to serve as president once again.

With the 2024 elections drawing closer, Mahama’s policy proposals are expected to generate discussions and debates among political stakeholders and the general public as the country prepares to make a crucial decision on its future leadership.

  • GNFS issues warning against assault on firefighters at Apraman incident

GNFS issues warning against assault on firefighters at Apraman incident

Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has issued a stern warning to the public, particularly those prone to assaulting personnel arriving late at fire scenes, following a disturbing incident in Apraman, a farming community near Kade.

Reports from Citinewsroom.com reveal that firefighters from the Asamankese Fire Station faced resistance from residents upon their arrival at a fire scene in Apraman. The Asamankese firefighters were called to assist their colleagues from the Kade fire station, who had already been dispatched.

However, due to a fault in their tender at Topreman, 2km away from Apraman, the Asamankese personnel arrived at the scene in a private vehicle. This delay infuriated the residents, leading to an assault on the firefighters.

Fortunately, the situation was brought under control with the timely intervention of ASP Ernest Danso from the Ghana Police Service. This allowed the firefighters to collaborate with the local residents to contain the fire using buckets of water.

Despite efforts, four residential units with nine bedrooms each suffered substantial losses in the fire. Thankfully, there were no casualties reported.

Speaking on the incident, D03 Ignatius Baidoo, the Eastern Regional Fire Service Public Relations Officer, emphasized the need for the public to refrain from attacking firefighters. He stressed that firefighters put their lives at risk to save lives and protect property.

D03 Baidoo explained, “The Kade Fire Station received a distressed call on February 8 due to a fire outbreak. Because the tender was out of commission, having broken down, it couldn’t respond to the fire scene. So a call was made to the Asamankese Fire Station.”

He further added, “Our men were heckled, insulted, and even one of them was pushed down. My appeal to the public is that when firefighters arrive at the scene, and if you perceive a delay due to misinformation or the fire service not receiving timely information, please allow them to assess the situation.”

D03 Baidoo concluded by urging the public to refrain from insulting firefighters and to allow them to carry out their duties effectively. He emphasized that firefighters will continue to serve diligently and will not relent in their efforts to protect lives and property.

  • NDC operative warns EC against election manipulation ahead of 2024 polls

NDC operative warns EC against election manipulation ahead of 2024 polls

An operative of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Electoral Commission (EC), James Agbey, has been warned against any attempt to manipulate the outcome of the 2024 elections in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Agbey’s statement serves as a stern reminder to the EC and its allies, emphasizing that the NDC will not tolerate any form of electoral manipulation. He asserted that the party’s operatives are prepared to resist and prevent any sinister plots by the EC to rig the upcoming elections, even before the first ballot is cast.

“We’ll not sit by and look on while the commission plunges the country into chaos. My colleagues and I are ready to stand up and be counted. We are ready to offer resistance to ensure that we have credible, free and fair elections in 2024,” Agbey declared.

Criticism was directed at the EC for recent proposals aimed at altering aspects of the electoral system, including the suggested closure of polls and the abandonment of indelible ink usage.

Agbey condemned these proposals, particularly the suggestion to scrap the use of indelible ink, which is traditionally applied to voters’ fingers to prevent multiple voting. He asserted that such a move would serve as a clear attempt to rig the 2024 elections in favor of the NPP.

Highlighting past events, Agbey reminded of the EC’s alleged negligence during the 2020 elections, accusing the commission, under the leadership of Jean Mensa, of turning a blind eye to instances where NPP-affiliated individuals disrupted polling stations. He cited incidents resulting in the deaths of at least eight innocent Ghanaians as a consequence.

The statement issued by Agbey serves as a strong indication of the NDC’s determination to ensure electoral integrity and fairness in the upcoming elections. It underscores the heightened tensions surrounding Ghana’s electoral process and the importance of maintaining transparency and accountability to uphold democratic principles.

  • Indian town imposes curfew and directs police to shoot offenders

Indian town imposes curfew and directs police to shoot offenders

Officials in a town in northern India put a curfew in place and told the police to shoot anyone who does not follow it. This came after fights over the building of a Muslim school and mosque led to at least five deaths and over 150 injuries.

On Thursday, there was violence in Haldwani, Uttarakhand. Because of this, the government shut down internet services and schools in the area. This was confirmed by Chief Radha Raturi.

Police officer A. Psaid that nearly 4,000 police officers rushed to the area and got the situation under control. He said the police were told to shoot protesters who didn’t follow the curfew.

On Thursday, a lot of people tried to stop government officials and police from tearing down the religious school and mosque. A court decided that the buildings were constructed on government land without permission.

As the violence got worse, the police used guns and tear gas to break up the protesters who were throwing petrol bombs and stones at them. They were attacking a police station and setting some vehicles on fire. Anshuman said this.

The head of the state police, Abhinav Kumar, said that five people were killed in the fighting. He didn’t give all the information but he said that there were no new violent incidents on Friday.

Government worker Vandana Singh Chauhan said that more than 150 police officers got hurt and many people had to go to the hospital.

Anshuman did not say if the police shooting caused the protesters to die. He also did not say what religion the victims were.

Haldwani is around 270 kilometres (170 miles) to the northeast of New Delhi.

Muslim groups and rights organizations say that India’s government, which is mainly made up of Hindus, has destroyed their homes and businesses before. Officials say they are only going after illegal buildings, but some people think they are unfairly punishing activists from minority groups. They call it “bulldozer justice. ”

Amnesty International said this week that bulldozers have destroyed homes, businesses, and places where Muslims worship. They said this was often done without warning and as an excuse to take over land illegally.

The Indian government is destroying Muslim homes, and this is being called “bulldozer justice” by some leaders and the media. This is very cruel and terrible. Agnes Callamard, who is the leader of the rights group, said that forcing people out of their homes is very unfair, not allowed by law and unfair because of treating people differently.

Between April and June 2022, researchers from the group found that in five states, authorities used demolitions as punishment after incidents of communal violence or protests. They recorded at least 128 demolitions during this time.

Many people have criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not doing anything about hate speech against Muslims in India, who make up 14% of the population.

Modi’s party says the accusations are not true.

  • Dampare, others face GHS253k fine over assault on a man by police officers

Dampare, others face GHS253k fine over assault on a man by police officers

The High Court in Accra has delivered a landmark ruling, compelling the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare and three others to pay a total sum of GHS253,709 in damages to a victim of police brutality.

Isaac Manu, a father of four and a Welder, was awarded compensation after suffering assault by a police officer, resulting in severe physical and psychological trauma, including the inability to have an erection.

The judgment, presided over by Justice Kwasi Adjenin-Boateng, found the police officer guilty of applying “unreasonable force” during Manu’s arrest in 2016, based on mere suspicion of theft of a KIA Sportage car from his former employer.

Manu’s pursuit for justice commenced on May 31, 2019, when he filed a Writ of Summons and Statement of Claim against the Defendants, which included the Inspector General of Police, the Attorney General, Vivian Adeoku, Matthew Adrah, and Kwesi Asare.

In his legal action, Manu sought various forms of compensation, including general damages for assault, special damages covering medical expenses incurred as a result of the assault, compensation for psychological trauma, loss of earnings from the date of the incident to the present, loss of livelihood, aggravated damages due to the assault’s severe impact on his sexual function, and costs.

Represented by Richmond Korley Esq., Manu’s case underscored the egregious nature of police brutality and the significant impact it can have on individuals’ lives.

The defendants, represented by Gideon Agyapong Sabeng, Assistant State Attorney, were unable to refute the evidence presented by Manu’s legal team, leading to the court’s ruling in favor of the plaintiff.

The judgment serves as a significant victory for victims of police brutality, highlighting the importance of accountability and justice in cases of law enforcement misconduct. It sends a clear message that excessive use of force by law enforcement officials will not be tolerated and that victims have the right to seek redress through the legal system.

    Plaintiff’s case:

It was the case of the Plaintiff that he is a welder and a father of four and he used to work in the 5th Defendant’s (Kwesi Asabre) workshop at Kasoa but stopped working there in October, 2016 as a result of a misunderstanding.

He said that on October 22, 2016, he was driving a KIA Sportage car with his son when Asabre (his former boss) also driving a car signaled him to stop which he did and parked his car beside the road.

According to the Plaintiff, Asabre (5th Defendant) also parked his car but observed that the 4th Defendant (Matthew Adrah) and a man in mufti emerged from the Asabre’s car and without uttering a word to the Plaintiff “started beating him whilst referring to him as a thief.”

The Plaintiff averred when he asked about what he had stolen, he was not told but they continued to beat him and hit his face with handcuffs resulting in deep cuts at the Plaintiff’s chin, lower lip, and forehead and injury to his left eye and his shirt stained with blood from the cuts he sustained.

The plaintiff further stated that Matthew Adrah (4th Defendant) handcuffed him whilst he was still bleeding and later took him to the Kasoa Police Station in Asabre’s car.

He added that when the counter officer on duty at the said police station enquired from Asabre and the other man what the Plaintiff had done, they responded that the Plaintiff had stolen KIA Sportage car.

    Hospital:

The Plaintiff told the Court that it was at the Police station where he got to know the crime he was accused of and for which reason he had been beaten.

He also said, the Counter Officer told Asabre to take him to the hospital, where the wounds were stitched to stop the bleeding.

The Plaintiff stated that a day after the incident, October 23, 2016, he reported at the Kasoa Police Station where a meeting was held among the Plaintiff, the station officer, Vivian Adeoku (3rd Defendant), Adrah, and Asabre during which the Station Officer informed the Plaintiff that Asabre complained that the Plaintiff broke into his workshop and stole a KIA Sportage car.

But, Asabre he said, denied making a report of stealing but rather reported that the Plaintiff owed him GH¢600.00.

    Eye surgery:

The Plaintiff said he subsequently went to the Lapaz Community Hospital where his left eye was examined and he was given medication but he could still not see with the left eye.

He said, the doctor informed him that his left eye was permanently damaged and he also had blood in his urine.

The Plaintiff again said he went to Agogo Presby Hospital in the Ashanti Region for a second opinion on the condition of his left eye.

After a medical examination at Agogo, he said he was transferred to the Emmanuel Eye Clinic in Accra, from where he was again referred to Saint Thomas Eye Clinic.

After examination at Saint Thomas Eye Clinic, he said surgery was prescribed but he could not afford the surgery.

    Erectile dysfunction:

He stated that he later underwent a fresh medical examination at Saint Thomas Eye Clinic and the report stated that two surgeries could restore partial sight to his left eye.

According to him, surgeries were performed on the left eye but he is still having difficulties with his sight and it is affecting his right eye.

It is the case of the Plaintiff that he has not been able to have an erection after the beating suffered at the hands of the Adrah Defendant.

The plaintiff stated that after the beatings, he had collapsed on more than two occasions and also had not been able to work since October 22, 2016 and that he had spent his entire life savings and borrowed huge sums for his medical treatment.

    Minimal reasonable force:

It was the case of the 1st to 4th Defendants that Adrah with a civilian employee attempted to arrest the Plaintiff after informing the Plaintiff that he was under arrest.

According to the Defendants, in resisting lawful arrest by the Adrah the Plaintiff became very “violent and a scuffle ensued.”

The Adrah (4th Defendant) was mindful of his duty to exercise minimal reasonable force in effecting an arrest, and exercising this minimum force enabled the Plaintiff to overcome the Adrah subsequently throwing him onto the ground.

The Defendants argued that, as a police civilian employee, John Mensah Sarbah came to Adrah’s aid by separating the Plaintiff from the 4th Defendant, and in the process the Plaintiff bit the right thigh of the said civilian employee.

They contended that the Plaintiff suffered a minor injury of a bruise over his left eye and was treated and discharged.

The Defendants again stated the injury was a result of the 4th Defendant’s lawful use of force for the prevention or defence against the criminal offence of unlawful resistance of lawful arrest by the Plaintiff.

According to the Defendants, the Plaintiff was subsequently given a police Medical Report Form to be presented to any government hospital, and the report was returned to the Kasoa Police but the Plaintiff rather returned the said form to PIPS instead of to the Kasoa police.

In the said report, the Plaintiff was diagnosed as having a traumatic eye condition and he was treated and discharged, the said condition was said to be improving when the Plaintiff went for further review and therefore the Plaintiff’s claims and reliefs are unwarranted, baseless, and unfounded.

The defendant concluded that the 3’d Defendant was not present and did not take part in the arrest of the Plaintiff and the ensuing scuffle that resulted due to the plaintiff’s resistance

    By Court:

Justice Adjenin-Boateng in his judgment said, it is the considered view of the court that Matthew Adrah (4th Defendant), as a police officer is entitled to use reasonable force to effect the arrest of suspects including the Plaintiff herein.

However, “it is my considered view and I so find that in the instant case the force used by the 4th Defendant to effect the arrest of the Plaintiff was unreasonable and accordingly the Plaintiff is entitled to judgment.

The Court entered judgment for the Plaintiff as follows; General damages GH¢10,000.00, Special damages GH¢43,709.00, Damages for loss of livelihood and pain and suffering and psychological trauma (Compensation) GH¢200,000.00.

The Court also awarded a cost of GH¢20,000 against the Attorney General, IGP, and Matthew Adrah (1st, 2nd, and 4th Defendant), jointly and severally in favour of the Plaintiff.

Meanwhile, the court awarded the cost of GH¢5,000,00 against Plaintiff in favour of Vivian Adeoku, (3rd Defendant).

Passengers to go stranded on Feb. 13 as drivers prepare to strike over VAT on electricity

Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has declared its intention to join Organized Labour in a planned demonstration against the implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT) on the domestic consumption of electricity. The demonstration is scheduled to take place on February 13, 2024, despite the government’s recent announcement of the suspension of the VAT.

In a statement released by the GPRTU, commuters of public transport have been advised to prepare themselves for disruptions in transportation services on the day of the demonstration. The Union has announced that no commercial vehicles under its umbrella will be offering services to passengers during the protest.

Abass Moro, the Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU, reiterated the Union’s commitment to the cause of Organized Labour, emphasizing that their leadership is demanding the complete scrapping of the 15% VAT on electricity without any compromise.

“We are part of Organized Labour. Our leadership says it doesn’t want any bargaining apart from striking out completely of the 15% VAT on electricity. This is all that our leadership says it wants,” Moro stated in an interview.

Organized Labour remains steadfast in its stance against the VAT on electricity, asserting that its call for the abolition of the tax is non-negotiable. Despite the government’s announcement of the suspension of the VAT, the union maintains that the tax must be completely scrapped.

The planned demonstration signifies the determination of Organized Labour and its affiliates, including the GPRTU, to advocate for the interests of the Ghanaian populace and address concerns regarding the affordability and accessibility of essential utilities.

As preparations for the demonstration continue, commuters are advised to make alternative transportation arrangements on February 13, 2024, due to the anticipated suspension of public transport services by the GPRTU and other participating unions.

  • Nations we provide arms to shoud follow laws of war – US warns

Nations we provide arms to shoud follow laws of war – US warns

US President Joe Biden said that countries getting American weapons must follow the rules of international law in a memo on Thursday night.

The new rule says that countries getting military help must promise in writing that they are following the rules of war.

The president admits that Israel went too far in its response in Gaza. This led to the decision to move.

Israel gets the most money for the military from the United States.

President Biden wrote in a memo saying that if foreign governments want to get weapons from the US, they must promise in writing to use them the right way, following international laws.

Foreign governments also need to promise that they will make sure US aid gets to civilians in war zones.

The memo says that Congress and the president should be given this information regularly.

All 100 countries that get weapons from the US have to promise within the next 180 days. But the countries in conflict, like Israel, only have 45 days to respond to the order.

The memo says that if a problem comes up, we need to make a plan to fix it.

It means that they might stop giving weapons or other support, until the problem is fixed.

Every year, Washington gives Israel about $3. 8 billion in military aid, which makes Israel the biggest recipient of this kind of funding in the world.

Government officials said on Thursday that the order does not focus on any specific country. This comes after Democratic lawmakers expressed worries about Israel’s military actions in Gaza and if they followed international laws.

Senator Chris Van Hollen is happy that Congress is trying to make sure that countries who receive military aid have to obey international rules.

Sen Van Hollen said he thinks this will help Biden make sure that all countries getting US military help, like Israel, follow the rules of international humanitarian law and work together to give out humanitarian aid.

The military campaign started because Hamas attacked Israel on October 7th and killed 1,300 people, according to Israeli officials. 250 more people were kidnapped.

Since Israel’s counterattack, over 27,800 Palestinians have been killed and at least 67,000 have been injured, according to the health ministry run by Hamas.

Video from the air above Gaza shows that many buildings in the area have been damaged or destroyed. Approximately 17 million people, which is more than 80% of Gaza’s population, have to leave their homes and stay in other places.

Since the war in October, there hasn’t been as much aid going to the people in Gaza. The UN has said that many people there are in danger of not having enough food to eat.

Earlier this week, the leader of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, said that the military has been told to get ready to go to Rafah, a city next to Egypt where 1. 5 million Palestinians are living.

Mr Netanyahu said Israel will soon have a complete victory over Hamas.

The US said on Thursday that attacking the city without a good plan would be a bad idea.

The White House said it wouldn’t support big operations without thinking about the refugees there first.

“The Israeli agents are acting in a way to scare us, but we shouldn’t let them intimidate us. ” She said to the local media that there is a reason why something is happening.

Israel strongly criticized the media on Friday, with the foreign affairs ministry telling them off.

Quote Message: The accusations made by the South African foreign minister are not true and have no evidence. He is acting as a legal supporter for the Hamas terrorist organization.

The accusations made by the South African foreign minister are not true and have no evidence. This is just another way for them to blame innocent people.

President Biden said that at first, the president of Mexico, Sisi, did not want to let humanitarian materials go into Gaza. He said this during a press conference on Thursday when talking about the fighting between Israel and Gaza.

The president of Mexico is named Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Egyptians have given President al-Sisi the nickname “El Meksiki” which means “The Mexican” to avoid censorship.

“You can’t freely say negative things about the president in Egypt. That’s why some people started calling him ‘El Meksiki’ (‘the Mexican’ in Arabic) because it sounds like ‘al-Sisi’ and this way they can criticize him without getting censored,” one person explained on X (formerly Twitter).

In the US, people are worried about President Biden’s health and ability to think clearly. But the President says he is fit to do his job.

Blow-by-blow account of how Aburi Girls student died in school

The untimely death of a final year student at Aburi Girls Senior High School on February 6, 2024, has stirred controversy as her father has accused the school authorities of failing to provide her with adequate medical care, leading to her demise.

According to the grieving father, he received a series of calls from the headmistress of the school on Sunday, February 4, 2024, urging him to come and pick up his daughter due to her reported illness. However, upon arrival at the school, he was shocked to find his daughter unconscious on the floor, with the headmistress and other students gathered around her.

“In my mind, my daughter had some mild illness, and so I was going there. But when I got there, my daughter was lying on the floor unconscious, and the madam who was calling was sitting by her side together with other students, not knowing she was almost dead,” he recounted.

Despite rushing the student to the Tetteh Quashie Hospital upon realizing the severity of her condition, the father was devastated to learn from a doctor that his daughter had already passed away.

Expressing his frustration and grief, the father blamed the school for the tragic loss of his daughter, asserting that they failed to act promptly by not taking her to the hospital in time. He also questioned the school’s request for his National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card before admitting his daughter, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

“The NHIS they were requesting from me before they admit my daughter, what is the purpose of the health insurance? Why didn’t the school take my child to the hospital before they called me? When they decided to call me, what were they expecting me to do in the space of emergency?” he lamented.

The incident has sparked outrage among parents and guardians, raising concerns about the safety and welfare of students within the school premises. As investigations into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death commence, calls for accountability and reforms in school healthcare protocols have intensified.

Authorities at Aburi Girls Senior High School are yet to respond to the allegations of negligence. However, the tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the critical importance of ensuring the well-being and safety of students in educational institutions.

About 10 million Ethiopians are very hungry – Oxfam

Oxfam says that one out of every three people in northern Ethiopia don’t have enough food to eat.

Almost 10 million people live in Tigray and Amhara.

Fighting and lack of rain made it hard for farmers to grow crops, so millions of people had to find extreme ways to stay alive, according to the charity.

A government report said almost 400 people have died from hunger in two areas.

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said no one had died in the country just from hunger, which goes against what the UN had reported.

Oxfam is saying that northern Ethiopia could have a very bad humanitarian crisis if we don’t increase our help.

There is a shortage of money and fighting in Amhara, which is making it hard to help people in need.

The World Food Programme and USAid found out that some people were stealing food aid in Ethiopia last Spring. Because of this, they stopped giving aid to Ethiopia for several months before starting again more carefully in December.

Last year, the UN only got one third of the $4 billion it asked for Ethiopia.

Leaders in Tigray say there could be a big hunger problem, but the central government doesn’t believe that.

Malawi removes need for visas for 79 nations

Malawi has made it easier for people from 79 countries to visit without needing a visa. This is meant to help bring more tourists and businesses to the country.

The Minister of Homeland Security, Ken Zikhałe, changed the immigration rules to make it easier for people from the UK, China, Russia, Germany, Australia, Canada, Belgium, Ghana, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, France, and other countries to get visas.

People from Sadc and Comesa countries don’t need a visa to travel.

This does not include countries that require Malawian citizens to have a visa.

The changes mean that certain groups like diplomats and government officials, as well mutual exchange countries with agreements for multiple-entry visas with Malawi, are exempt from the new rules.

The new visa rules in Malawi now allow multiple entry visas to be valid for up to 12 months.

“The decision is not just about visas. It’s about showing the world the great things in Malawi and inviting people to come and see them for themselves,” said Tourism Minister Vera Kamtukule in an interview with local media.

The British embassy in Malawi told its citizens they can easily get a visa to go see the cool stuff in the southern African country.

Malawi, Kenya, and Rwanda are letting people from other African countries visit them.

GPRTU to partner organised labour to demonstrate against VAT on electricity

US museum returns pilfered artefacts to Ghana

The king of the Asante kingdom in Ghana, also known as the Asantehene, has been given back seven royal objects that were stolen from the kingdom almost 150 years ago.

The things were brought back from the Fowler Museum at the University of California in the US and given to King Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in a ceremony on Thursday.

They have a gold necklace, a fancy chair, two gold decorations for stools, and two bracelets.

An important person’s elephant tail whisk, a special ceremonial item, was given back, according to Erica P Jones, who works with African art at Fowler Museum.

The items have been at Fowler Museum since 1965, but were taken by British forces from the Asantehene’s Manhyia Palace in the city of Kumasi, southern Ghana, in 1874.

The items were returned to the kingdom less than two weeks after the British Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum loaned back 32 items that had been stolen from there in the 19th Century.

  • I never said I’m a quack pastor – Obinim defends reputation

I never said I’m a quack pastor – Obinim defends reputation

Leader and founder of International God’s Way Church, Bishop Daniel Obinim, has vehemently refuted claims suggesting that he once admitted to performing fake miracles to gain public attention. Addressing congregants during a sermon shared by OB TV, Bishop Obinim expressed bewilderment at the circulation of such false assertions in the media.

Contrary to the reports, Bishop Obinim clarified that he has never made any statements suggesting that the miracles performed in his church are anything less than genuine. He emphasized that his words had been twisted and misunderstood by certain individuals, leading to the dissemination of inaccurate information.

“I have never said anywhere that I am a quack pastor or perform fake miracles, never. Yet people are putting words in my mouth and saying all kinds of things,” he stated.

Additionally, Bishop Obinim urged the public to disregard rumors about the collapse of his church, asserting that such claims are attempts by certain individuals to tarnish his reputation.

“I talked about some claims people are making about me saying ‘I am a fake pastor, my miracles were not genuine, my church has collapsed’ and a whole lot of things. I don’t want to talk about it but I know it’s my enemies who are twisting my words to bring me down and denigrate my image,” he emphasized.

The controversy surrounding Bishop Obinim’s alleged admission to fake miracles and church collapse stemmed from earlier statements where he lamented about certain regrets and challenges faced by his ministry. He acknowledged the negative impact of his feud with Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, on his church’s membership.

Despite reports suggesting otherwise, Bishop Obinim maintains that his church remains strong, and he continues to uphold the authenticity of the miracles performed within his congregation.

As Bishop Obinim seeks to set the record straight, the public remains divided over the authenticity of his ministry’s miracles and the veracity of the allegations leveled against him. However, his steadfast denial of the claims underscores his determination to preserve his reputation and uphold the integrity of his ministry amidst mounting scrutiny.

Family to sue Aburi Girls SHS over students death

Family of a first-year student at Aburi Girls Senior High School in the Eastern Region is considering legal action against the school amidst allegations of negligence leading to the tragic death of their daughter. The 15-year-old student passed away on Monday, February 5, 2024, after suffering from severe stomach pains.

According to sources within the school, it is alleged that the student was denied necessary medical attention by the school nurse, who reportedly accused her of feigning illness. Unfortunately, by the time she was eventually rushed to the hospital, it was too late, and she had already passed away.

The body of the deceased student has been transferred to the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital pending autopsy, while the police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her untimely demise.

Miss Danso, an aunt of the deceased, expressed the family’s anguish in an interview with Kasapa News, stating that they would pursue legal action against the school if it is found responsible for their daughter’s death. She emphasized that the school authorities should have ensured that the sick girl received immediate medical attention, especially given the close proximity of the hospital to the school premises.

“We’ll sue the school if after investigation it emerges that the school was guilty leading to our daughter’s death,” Miss Danso asserted. “Because, the Heads in the school should have ensured the sick girl was taken to the hospital for treatment if the school’s sick bay could not take care of her.”

The family’s determination to seek justice highlights the seriousness of the situation and the need for accountability within educational institutions. They argue that the school had a duty of care to their daughter, and any failure to fulfill this obligation resulted in tragic consequences.

As investigations continue, the family remains resolute in their pursuit of truth and justice for their beloved daughter. They demand answers and assurances that measures will be put in place to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The community mourns the loss of the young student and stands in solidarity with her grieving family during this difficult time.

You can’t evade accountability – Mahama replies Bawumia over Feb 7 address

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has asserted that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia cannot evade responsibility for the deteriorating economic situation in Ghana.

The former President emphasized that members of the Akufo-Addo government must not distance themselves from the country’s current economic challenges.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Tamale, located in the Northern Region, on Thursday, Mahama criticized the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he described as plunging the nation into economic turmoil. He underscored the importance of holding accountable all individuals involved in decision-making within the government.

“Now, all those who contributed to the mess are attempting to distance themselves as if they were not involved. People have started claiming they were not in charge and that their voices weren’t heard, but they all played a part in the crisis, and none of them can evade responsibility. They all participated in cabinet meetings and collectively made decisions,” stated Mahama.

The former President rejected any attempts by members of the government to absolve themselves of blame, asserting that all individuals, including Vice President Bawumia, were complicit in the country’s economic challenges.

“All of them ‘dey inside’, Jack Toronto and all his brothers, all of them are part of the mess we are going through. None of them can escape responsibility,” Mahama emphasized.

Mahama’s remarks come amid growing concerns over Ghana’s economic performance, including rising inflation, currency depreciation, and mounting public debt. The NDC flagbearer’s comments serve as a rallying call for accountability and transparency in governance, urging citizens to hold leaders accountable for their actions and decisions.

As Ghana approaches the upcoming presidential elections, the debate over economic management and accountability is likely to remain a focal point of political discourse. Mahama’s critique of the government’s economic policies underscores the need for comprehensive solutions to address the country’s economic challenges and restore stability and prosperity for all citizens.

Ghana Embassy and IOM facilitate repatriation of 165 nationals from Libya

Ghana’s Embassy in Tripoli, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has orchestrated the repatriation of 165 Ghanaian nationals from Libya to their home country.

The initiative, unveiled by the Information Ministry in a press release on Thursday, February 8, signifies a concerted endeavor to assist Ghanaian citizens in distress abroad. The group is scheduled to arrive at Kotoka International Airport at 1500 hours GMT.

This endeavor follows previous successful repatriation endeavors, including the return of 169 Ghanaians from Tripoli to Accra last October and the voluntary repatriation of 134 individuals from Misrata to Ghana on October 10, 2023, as part of the Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) program.

Since the inception of the VHR program in 2023, a total of 629 Ghanaians have been beneficiaries, underscoring the commitment to aiding nationals facing challenges abroad.

The repatriation efforts prioritize several categories of individuals, including those detained, individuals requiring medical assistance, families with children, stranded individuals, and destitute individuals seeking assistance to return to Ghana. This emphasis underscores the humanitarian nature of the initiative, aiming to provide support to those most vulnerable and in need of assistance.

Such collaborative efforts between the Ghanaian government, represented by its embassy, and international organizations like the IOM highlight the importance of collective action in addressing challenges faced by citizens abroad. The coordinated approach ensures a swift and efficient response to crises while upholding the principles of humanitarianism and solidarity.

  • Biden in the spotlight over his age

Biden in the spotlight over his age

It was a big report about politics that caused a lot of controversy.

The fireworks came out on Thursday when special counsel Robert Hur revealed his investigation findings about how Joe Biden handled secret documents after he stopped being vice president in 2017.

The main finding was that the president won’t be charged with a crime even though there’s proof that he knowingly kept and shared secret information. when he was not working for the government.

The end result was worse. Hur decided not to take the 81-year-old president to court because he thought a jury would feel sorry for him. They might see him as a kind old man with a bad memory.

Concerns about Joe Biden’s age and ability to serve another four years as president have been around for as long as he has been in the White House. This new discovery will give the Republican party more reasons to criticize him and will also worry some Democrats who think he may not be capable of doing the job.

Chris Borick, the director of the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion, said that the Biden campaign is really trying hard to deal with this story.

“Repeated polling shows that many voters believe he is too old to run, which could be his biggest problem in this election,” he says.

So, the Hur report made the White House very angry. The president had a sudden press conference to say that his memory is still good.

“He said he knows what he’s doing. ”

Additionally, the special counsel showed proof to support this claim. He said that in two days of interviews, Mr. Biden often couldn’t remember important details related to the investigation. Mr Hur also said that he had a hard time remembering when he was vice-president and when his oldest son, Beau Biden, passed away from cancer.

The president got mad during his press conference on Thursday evening because of this claim.

The president said, “Why does he have the nerve to raise that. ”

The press conference could make the attacks on Mr. Biden stronger This is because the president made a mistake and called the Egyptian President the president of Mexico when he was asked about the Gaza War.

That mistake, like other mistakes Mr. Biden has made recently, shows how hard it will be for him to win re-election. The president can show that he is still energetic and capable by working really hard during his campaign and being seen by the public more often. But trying to solve the problem might make it worse.

The White House has tried other ways to make the Hur report less powerful. Joe Biden’s lawyer, Richard Sauber, asked the special counsel to remove any mention of Biden’s mental sharpness and mistakes because he believed it was not true or suitable.

Mr Biden said he talked to the special lawyer for two days shortly after the 7 October attack by Hamas on Israel, even though he was busy with an international crisis at the time.

Other people who support Biden are questioning if Mr. Hur can be fair because he was chosen for his job by Donald Trump in 2017. Biden’s Attorney General Merrick Garland chose Mr Hur to be the special counsel.

The Biden team has been fast to criticize the mistakes Donald Trump makes when he speaks. The old president got mixed up and thought his main competitor Nikki Haley was actually former Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi. He also mistakenly thought Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was the leader of Turkey.

The White House may be lucky that this problem happened in February, nine months before the election.

Larry Sabato, who leads the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, says people are worried about how old Mr. Biden is, but it won’t ruin his chances of winning. The report is bad, but not too terrible.

He says people will see it and raise one eyebrow, not both. “Because people already kind of knew this. He says that even if you only watch a little bit of his speech, you can still understand what he is talking about.

When American voters finally vote, they will care more about the economy and abortion than the special report that said Mr. Biden didn’t do anything wrong.

The worst thing that could happen is that this is just the beginning of a lot of proof that makes the president look bad in an area where he is not very good. Time goes forward in only one direction.

    The president is getting older.

  • Tema MCE applauds Dr Bawumia’s visionary plans for Ghana’s future

Tema MCE applauds Dr Bawumia’s visionary plans for Ghana’s future

The Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Yohane Amarh Ashitey, has commended Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for his ambitious vision outlined during a recent address, expressing astonishment at the transformative promises made.

In an exclusive interview on the sidelines of Dr Bawumia‘s address titled “Ghana’s Next Chapter” on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, Amarh Ashitey lauded the Vice President’s pledges, describing them as both shocking and wonderful.

“I mean, this is Dr. Bawumia and I knew we were going to get an inspiring vision statement from him, but even I must admit that what he delivered is mind blowing. Far beyond inspiration, Dr. Bawumia gave us real hope that the average Ghanaian can trust in”, the MCE said in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the address.

Among the key announcements made by Vice President Bawumia was the intention to scrap the controversial e-levy, which has burdened the less privileged in society by taxing their means of transferring money. Additionally, he pledged to reform and refocus the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to broaden the tax net, addressing the current imbalance where only a few taxpayers shoulder the burden of the populace.

Dr. Bawumia criticized the archaic tax regime inherited from colonial masters, highlighting existing loopholes that have resulted in substantial uncollected tax revenue, amounting to approximately GHC24 billion. He emphasized that closing these loopholes would alleviate the need for future IMF bailouts.

The Vice President further announced plans to abolish the proposed 15% tax on electricity, emission tax, and the betting tax, which has been a source of discontent among Ghanaian youth.

Despite criticisms from some quarters, particularly the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing Dr. Bawumia of populism, Amarh Ashitey defended the Vice President, asserting that his actions demonstrate independence from the current government’s policies.

“We are seeing a vintage Dr. Bawumia who disagreed with many of the policies that were adopted by cabinet now asserting his own point of view on these issues,” Amarh Ashitey remarked. He added that Dr. Bawumia’s decision to abolish contentious taxes reflects his genuine commitment to the welfare of Ghanaians.

The MCE concluded by stating that Dr. Bawumia’s visionary plans signal a new era of leadership characterized by bold decision-making and a focus on addressing the needs of ordinary citizens.

  • AGI president raises concerns over unrestrained free market impact on Ghana’s manufacturing sector

AGI president raises concerns over unrestrained free market impact on Ghana’s manufacturing sector

President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Dr Humphrey Ayim-Darke, has expressed reservations about the adverse effects of an overly liberalized market on Ghana’s economy, particularly its manufacturing sector.

Speaking during an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express, Dr Ayim-Darke articulated qualms about the current extent of market liberalization, citing its detrimental impact on Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves.

He emphasized that the unregulated influx of imports, facilitated by the open market policies, is leading to confusion in the policy and lending sectors, thereby significantly affecting foreign exchange rates.

Dr Ayim-Darke warned that Ghana‘s adoption of an approach where regulations are disregarded, akin to more developed nations like the United States and China, is unsuitable for its status as a middle or low-developing economy. He highlighted the need for a more balanced and regulated system to support the manufacturing sector’s growth and sustainability.

The AGI President stressed that the prevailing situation in Ghana allows individuals to import virtually anything without adequate controls, posing challenges to local manufacturing. He argued that the unbridled free market has hindered the sector’s growth and advocated for a reconsideration of the current liberalized economic model.

In his call for a more controlled approach to imports, Dr. Ayim-Darke proposed that a balanced and regulated system would better serve Ghana’s economic interests, providing stability and fostering an environment conducive to the growth of the manufacturing sector.

The concerns raised by Dr. Ayim-Darke highlight the pressing need for policymakers to reassess Ghana’s economic policies, particularly in terms of market liberalization, to ensure sustainable growth and development for the manufacturing sector and the economy as a whole.

“Israeli intelligence attempting to intimidate me” – SA Minister

The Foreign Minister of South Africa, Naledi Pandor, says that Israeli intelligence has tried to scare her after the Gaza case at the International Court of Justice. This was reported by the local media.

Ms Pandor said she was worried about her family’s safety because people were targeting her on social media.

The minister talked to Police Minister Bheki Cele about increasing her protection because she got scary messages.

“The Israeli agents and intelligence services are trying to scare us, but we should not let them intimidate us. ” “There is a reason why it’s happening,” she said.

Israel has not said anything about the minister’s comments yet.

The ICJ told Israel to do things to stop killing Palestinians in Gaza and report back in a month.

South Africa took Israel to court because they believed Israel broke the rules about how people should be treated in the conflict.

Ms Pandor said the government is committed to making sure the ICJ case is completed.

She made these comments a few days after President Cyril Ramaphosa talked about a potential campaign to resist South Africa’s actions following the ICJ ruling.

  • Israel-Gaza war: US declares it will not support impromptu Rafah offensive

Israel-Gaza war: US declares it will not support impromptu Rafah offensive

The US told Israel that attacking Gaza’s southern city of Rafah without good planning would be very bad.

About 15 million Palestinians are living in a city next to Egypt in very difficult living conditions.

The White House said it would not support big operations without thinking about the refugees living there.

Days after Israel’s leader said that the military is getting ready to work in Rafah, these comments were made.

Many people in Rafah had to leave their homes because of fighting in other parts of Gaza, so they are now living in tents.

Israel attacked Rafah from the air on Thursday morning and Israeli tanks also started shooting.

Garda al-Kourd, a mother of two, has been forced to move six times because of the war. She thinks Israel might attack, but she is hoping for a ceasefire before it happens.

“If they come to Rafah, it will be the end for us. It feels like we are waiting to die. ” “We don’t have anywhere else to go,” she said to the BBC. She was staying with 20 other people at a relative’s house in Rafah.

Emad, who is 55 years old and has six children, is staying in Rafah after running away from his home. He told the Reuters news agency that he is most scared of a ground attack because he has nowhere else to go.

“We are standing with our backs to the fence on the border and looking towards the Mediterranean,” he said. “Where do you want to go. ”

A lot of northern and central Gaza has been destroyed by constant bombing from Israel since the war started on 7 October.

On Thursday evening, US President Joe Biden said that Israel’s actions in Gaza were too much. He did not mention Rafah.

Before, a spokesperson for the US National Security Council named John Kirby said that the Israeli military has a responsibility to protect innocent civilians when they are carrying out operations in Gaza or anywhere else.

“He said that starting a war right now would be really bad for those people, and it’s not something we would agree with,” He also said that there is no evidence to show that Israel is going to start a big war in Rafah soon. ”

Deputy State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel agreed with Mr. Kirby, saying that the US would not support doing something like this without careful and believable planning.

The BBC asked where refugees in Rafah could go if there was an operation. Patel said these were important questions that the Israelis should answer.

In Tel Aviv, Israel, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that any military action by Israel must focus on protecting civilians. “and that’s especially true for Rafah”

The US doesn’t usually talk about what Israel will do next in Gaza, but this time they gave a clear warning.

Every year, the United States gives $3. 8 billion in military aid to Israel, making it the country that receives the most military aid in the world.

Israeli officials say about 1,300 people were killed by Hamas attacks in southern Israel on October 7th.

Israel started a war and more than 27,800 Palestinians have been killed and at least 67,000 injured in response. This information is from the Hamas-run health ministry.

“The UN leader said people are living in crowded shelters without clean water, electricity, or enough food. ”

“We strongly spoke out against the terrible actions of Hamas. ” We also strongly disapprove of breaking the rules of war in Gaza.

On Tuesday, Israel’s leader, Benjamin Netanyahu, said he told soldiers to get ready to go to Rafah and that Israel would soon have complete success over Hamas in just a few months.

At least four people died in fighting in a northern Indian state after officials tore down a mosque, saying it was built unlawfully.

Violence happened in Haldwani town in Uttarakhand during a police operation to remove illegal buildings.

Officials said they started a campaign to remove illegal buildings, including a mosque and a religious school.

Some Muslims who prayed at the mosque feel like they have been treated unfairly.

Many people got hurt in the fights between protesters and police on Thursday night.

Videos showed people breaking cars and throwing stones, and the police spraying tear gas at them.

A curfew is in place and the state has given orders to shoot anyone who poses a threat in order to control the situation.

The event happened in Banbhoolpura, Haldwani. Many people were upset last year when over 50,000 Muslims were told to leave land owned by the Indian Railways. They protested a lot in the district. India’s highest court stopped the demolitions.

Authorities have said that they are taking action to remove illegal settlements from the area, as ordered by the high court.

The government official, District Magistrate Vandana Singh, said that the mosque and the madrassa were destroyed because they were built on government land without permission and were not officially recognized as religious buildings.

The drive did not focus on any specific group of people. “It started calmly, but then a group of people attacked the officials, which caused a lot of fighting,” Ms. She also mentioned that the mosque was given a warning before it was torn down.

The people who live nearby say the mosque was destroyed before the court made a final decision about it.

“When the government arrived to tear down the buildings, we told them to wait until the next time we go to court. ” But they didn’t pay attention. “If they had waited for the court’s final decision, we wouldn’t have resisted,” said Shakeel Ahmad, a local council member, to the Indian Express newspaper.

Tensions about destroying mosques have increased recently.

Muslim groups are saying they feel singled out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, which is Hindu-leaning. They accuse the government of creating religious division before the upcoming general elections in two months. The government says it did not do that thing.

On Friday, things were still tense in Haldwani as the authorities turned off the internet and ordered everything to close.

The schools in Banbhoolpura are closed for a few days, and many police officers are watching the area.

The violence happened a few days after Uttarakhand made a new law that applies to everyone, no matter their religion, sex, gender, or who they like.

In India, different religions have their own rules for marriage, divorce, and inheritance.

Muslims in Uttarakhand have said no to UCC because they think it will disturb their Islamic customs.

  • Zelensky fires Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Chief Military Officer of Ukraine

Zelensky fires Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Chief Military Officer of Ukraine

The president of Ukraine has fired the top military leader, Valerii Zaluzhnyi.

There are rumors that the president and Gen Zaluzhnyi, who has been leading Ukraine’s war, are not getting along.

Experienced Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi was chosen to replace someone by the president’s order.

This is the most significant change in Ukraine’s military leadership since Russia invaded in February 2022.

President Zelensky said that the top leaders of the military should be replaced, and that Gen Zaluzhnyi could still be part of the team.

“From today, a new group will lead the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” he announced on Thursday.

General Zaluzhnyi is well-liked by Ukrainian soldiers and the public. He is seen as a hero in the country.

His recent ratings have been better than Mr Zelensky’s.

The president talked openly with Gen Zaluzhnyi about the army’s changes, and thanked him for defending Ukraine from Russia.

The new army leader, Gen Syrskyi, knows how to fight in both defense and attack, according to Mr.

He defended the city of Kyiv, which is the capital of Ukraine, when Russia attacked in 2022.

He planned and led Ukraine’s unexpected and successful attack in Kharkiv. He is now in charge of military operations in eastern Ukraine, which is a big part of Ukraine’s counter-attack.

“We need to make this year very important,” said Mr.

“Very important for Ukraine to reach its goals in the war. ” Russia cannot agree to Ukraine being independent because it goes against our country’s independence.

He said he is changing the army’s leaders, and it’s not about last names or politics. It’s about managing Ukraine’s armed forces and having experienced commanders.

The military needs to use more advanced technology in their actions. “We need to change the leadership,” he said.

Mr Zelensky said he wants a clear plan for the military this year, considering the actual situation of the war with Russia. He said we need to change how we manage, recruit, and mobilize people in the frontline.

Mykhailo Podolyak, who helps the president, said it was necessary to change the tactics used in Ukraine’s counter-attack last year.

He repeated what Mr. Zelensky said about stopping the frontline from staying the same and finding advanced solutions.

The announcement has received different opinions, with some opposition MPs being the first to criticize the changes.

Kyiv’s mayor Vitali Klitschko thanked Gen Zaluzhnyi for helping Ukraine and said he hoped the government would make good decisions.

Oleksii Honcharenko, a member of the opposition party led by former President Petro Poroshenko, thinks that the president made a big mistake. He said doing it would be dangerous for the country, and we will all have to deal with the consequences.

Another MP from the Batkivschina party, Valentyn Nalyvaichenko, said that we need to help and support the military leaders during the war instead of criticizing them.

Ukraine’s defense minister, Rustem Umerov, said thank you to Gen Zaluzhnyi in a statement.

However, war changes over time. War makes things different and requires things to be different. The fights in 2022, 2023 and 2024 are all separate. In 2024, there will be new changes and we need to be prepared for them. We need new ways of doing things and new plans.

“Today, it was decided to change the leaders of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. ”

“I am very thankful to Valerii Fedorovych for all the things he has accomplished and won. “

  • Donald Trump wins Nevada caucuses with devastating ease

Donald Trump wins Nevada caucuses with devastating ease

Donald Trump won by a lot in the Nevada Republican caucus.

The only other person on the voting list was Ryan Binkley, who works as a pastor and businessman.

This means that Mr. Trump will get all 26 delegates from Nevada. Delegates are used by political parties to choose their candidate for president.

Media first report showed that the ex-president got 99% of the votes.

Donald Trump said at a party in Las Vegas that if we win this state, we will easily win the election in November.

Donald Trump has won in three states – Nevada, Iowa and New Hampshire. This means he is likely to be the Republican candidate in the November election.

He also won a vote for the Republican party in the US Virgin Islands, a place that is not a fully separate part of the United States.

Donald Trump’s main opponent, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, decided not to participate in the Nevada caucus and instead take part in the state’s primary vote.

There were two different votes in Nevada because the Republican Party and the Democratic-controlled state government couldn’t agree.

Nikki Haley lost in the primary election on Tuesday. Voters chose “none of these candidates” instead.

However, the outcome was meaningful because the Republican party in the state decided that only the caucus results would be used to choose the presidential candidate.

Nikki Haley’s group said they didn’t join the meeting because they believed it was unfair to Trump.

The people in Nevada were confused and frustrated by the situation.

The state’s Republican governor didn’t like it and said all the voters should have only one ballot.

The election in Nevada will be closely fought in November, even though we already know the result of the caucus. The vote will likely be between Donald Trump and Joe Biden again like in 2020.

Mr Trump will go to South Carolina next, where he will compete against Nikki Haley again.

Even though she lost three times, she promised to keep fighting. She believes that Republican supporters want someone else besides Donald Trump to be their candidate. She also thinks that people want a real election, not just someone being chosen without a real contest.

  • Kenyan hospital performs first kidney transplant using minimum invasive techniques

Kenyan hospital performs first kidney transplant using minimum invasive techniques

Kenya’s largest hospital, Kenyatta National Hospital, did a kidney transplant using a new type of surgery. It’s the first time a public hospital in Kenya did this kind of transplant.

Dickson Njoroge, who is 36 years old, got a new kidney from his cousin.

The surgery uses small cuts to take out and move the kidney, with help from special tools like computer-guided cameras that make things look bigger.

This is a new way of doing kidney transplants that does not need big cuts on the people giving or getting the kidney.

The hospital says that Kenyans don’t have to go to other countries anymore for the procedure.

Dr Charles Waihenya and Dr. Paul Njogu, the main doctors, said that the laparoscopic kidney transplant has many good things like less pain, less bleeding, faster healing, lower costs and better looks.

Kidney transplants using laparoscopic surgery are done a lot in many places, but they are not used very much in African countries because of problems with the hospitals and doctors.

  • I moved away from Egyptian pyramids to study in Dumfries – Student

I moved away from Egyptian pyramids to study in Dumfries – Student

When the University of Glasgow opened its Crichton campus in Dumfries, the people studying there were not the same as before.

At that time, one of its main goals was to offer college education in a place where people usually had to move away for that.

After 25 years, the focus has changed and now it has staff and students from over 40 countries.

Attracted to the classes available, how do they feel about living in the southern part of Scotland.

Noura Seada, 32, is from Giza, Egypt, near the pyramids, but she found something special at Crichton that she couldn’t find in her home country.

She said she got a masters degree in Egyptology and now she wants to study something about sustainability because there are no programs about it in her country, but there are many about tourism.

“Many people love to visit Egypt for vacation, but we don’t always think about how to protect the environment while we travel there. ”

She found the perfect course in sustainable tourism and now she is happy to live in a place that is very different from Egypt, which is loud and crowded.

But she still hasn’t tried a new type of cooking.

She said, “A lot of my friends have told me about haggis, but when I learned what it is, I decided not to try it. ”

“I want to try vegetarian haggis sometime. ”

Sreekumar Vattekkattu Pradeep Kumar, 21, is from Kerala in southern India and is studying how to manage environmental risks.

He thinks Dumfries is a great place to live.

“He said that it’s not really about the location, for him it was the program that made him decide to go to university. ”

I am willing to live anywhere if I am interested in what I am learning.

However, he sees some things that are the same as his home.

“I live in a very isolated village in India, so I really like the peaceful atmosphere here,” he said.

“It’s super peaceful and a great place to hang out. ”

Aimee Becker, a 23-year-old from Austin, Texas, was interested in the sustainable tourism course in Dumfries after doing various hospitality jobs.

“I saw how trash was thrown away and not much was being done to protect the environment,” she said.

“That’s when I found a program in Dumfries that matched exactly how I was feeling, so I decided to choose that program online. ”

She said the town was better than she expected.

“It has all you need, but in a smaller size,” she said.

“It’s been enjoyable and relaxing, so you can take it easy if you want, but there are still things to do if you like to stay busy. ”

I like the parks and the people in the area. It’s my favorite part.

Another student, Swathi Sreeja Prashanth, 23, from Kerala, India, chose to attend the University of Glasgow because her brother was studying there.

“I checked out other places, but when I saw the opportunities and the campus, I decided to choose this one,” she said.

She likes how things are not rushed in southern Scotland.

“It’s much quieter and more peaceful here than where I come from,” she said.

“India is really busy and there is a lot going on – when I arrived here, it felt really refreshing. ”

“I like being in Dumfries because it’s peaceful, the people are friendly, and it’s surrounded by nature. ”

The amazing seasons in Scotland were a bit surprising. She said it took a long time for her to get used to the weather.

The weather can change quickly from sunny to stormy to snowy. You never know what it will be like. In India, it doesn’t snow, so it’s like a really extreme weather condition here.

    ‘Very different’

The head of the campus, Prof Fabrice Renaud, said that there are many different kinds of people at the Dumfries campus and they have made it better.

“For 25 years, the University of Glasgow has been in the town and we are happy to be a popular university for the local community,” he said.

“We have seen an increase in international students choosing our campus because they like the programs we offer, in addition to our focus on our local community. ”

“We have created a special collection of things based on top-notch research and using the area around us. “

Tinubu mandates that national pledge be spoken at public gatherings

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has ordered that the national pledge must be said at all official and public events in the country.

This is to make sure that people show great respect for the symbols of Nigeria, remain loyal to the country, and keep Nigeria’s values and character strong, said a spokesperson for the president.

The president said it’s important to honor our country’s values, and follow its rules.

“We all love winning. ” We really like winning. “When you feel good and have hope, Nigeria is doing well,” the statement said.

Mr Tinubu wants everyone to promise to be faithful and loyal to Nigeria after singing the national anthem. It is an important symbol for the country.

The instruction is given while the country is dealing with more fighting between different groups and high tension between the south and north.

  • Putin takes command as Carlson allows Kremlin unrestricted access

Putin takes command as Carlson allows Kremlin unrestricted access

Vladimir Putin talked, told jokes and got a little angry sometimes, but not at the person who invited him.

Tucker Carlson laughed and listened a lot.

During the meeting with the Russian president, the American looked interested but his expression changed a few times.

Especially when Putin’s promise of a quick history lesson turned into a long, angry speech that lasted more than 30 minutes.

However, Carlson mostly seemed to enjoy and believe what Russia’s president was saying.

Putin was in control of the meeting, and the person interviewing him hardly had a chance to speak for a long time.

Instead of confronting the Russian leader, who is accused of committing war crimes, about his invasion of Ukraine and false claims, Carlson changed the subject to talk about God and the Russian people’s spirituality.

A journalist held against their will.

The American said his meeting with Putin was a success for free speech because he was going where no other Western news outlets would go.

That’s not true. The Kremlin is very careful about who Putin talks to. It usually picks someone who doesn’t know the country or the language, so they struggle to challenge him.

Carlson’s statement also didn’t acknowledge that Russia’s president has been making sure people can’t speak freely in his country for the last 20 years.

He recently made it illegal to tell the truth about Russia attacking Ukraine.

Many critics, including Vladimir Kara-Murza and Ilya Yashin, are currently in jail for speaking out.

He took two hours in the interview before asking about Evan Gershkovich, a US journalist. He got taken by the police in Russia while he was working and they said he was spying.

Carlson said that Putin might let the reporter go with him, giving him something to bring back from his trip.

What Putin gave was a strong clue about what he wants back.

He mentioned a Russian who killed a criminal in a European city, which suggests that Russia wants to exchange prisoners for Vadim Krasikov.

A person who might be working for the Russian government shot and killed a Chechen rebel in a park in Berlin in 2019.

Putin said that talks were happening and a deal might be made.

We know that those difficult conversations involve three countries and probably at least two American prisoners, and this is not new.

    Classes

The meeting at the Kremlin started with a lesson about history.

Putin wrote a long essay before the war that said Ukraine is not a country. He seems to have memorized it now.

He presented his thesis with a lot of passion, while Carlson seemed bored and disbelieving.

For people who continued watching, they got to see Putin repeating his best, confusing points.

He complained that Nato was moving into an area that Russia thinks should be its own. Putin said that we never agreed to let Ukraine join Nato.

However, Ukraine wants more security because it has a powerful and unpredictable neighbor like Russia.

Putin has always said that the big protests in Kyiv ten years ago were supported by the West and were like a “coup”, but they were not.

He also said that the fighting in eastern Donbas, which was started by Moscow, is like a war between people in the same country.

This is all part of how Putin explained why he invaded Ukraine almost 2 years ago. He said he was trying to remove any Nazi influences from Ukraine, but this is still ongoing.

Kyiv strongly disagrees with every part of it.

At one time, Putin said that the two countries will be friends again. They will get better.

However, I have met a lot of people from Ukraine who used to speak Russian before the attack, and they would often go there.

After two years of fighting with no reason and being attacked with missiles, many people have started using a different language and they say they only feel hate.

This is just one example of how Vladimir Putin is far from the truth and the real world. In February 2022, he sent Russian soldiers to Kyiv, hoping they would be welcomed as heroes.

    Opportunities for peace.

It looks like Putin agreed to this chat because he is in a strong position.

The fighting in Ukraine has stopped. Kyiv’s friends in the Western countries have been unsure about giving more military help, especially the US.

President Zelensky just fired his top military leader, saying that there needs to be a fresh start and new energy in the fight.

The situation is unstable and uncertain.

Putin was very confident when he said that Russia is prepared to talk and make deals.

He wants to take advantage of any uncertainty among Ukraine’s supporters and any hesitations among Ukrainians themselves about continuing to fight.

Putin said that eventually there will be an agreement because Nato is realizing that they can’t beat Russia in a war.

It’s just Putin being his usual self and Tucker Carlson allowed him to do as he pleased.

Not all interviews have to be hostile. It is good to let people speak and show who they are. But this one really went all out with that idea.

No one questioned the main points of Putin’s statements.

He didn’t have to explain the missiles that hit homes in Ukraine and killed civilians.

The American did not pressure Putin to stop locking up people who speak out against the war.
Excitement is a feeling of being really happy or full of energy.

Carlson received an amazing celebration in Moscow. The TV hosts who usually criticizes the West as an enemy were closely following and reporting on his every move with excitement.

Russia felt happy and excited when it suddenly received attention, like a person who had been ignored and then suddenly noticed.

And it looks like Carlson was also affected by what happened to him.

His interview finished with Putin talking about souls after being asked about the supernatural.

Both men stopped talking for a few seconds, and then the leader of Russia spoke again.

    “Should we stop now. ”

Carlson closed and opened his eyes quickly. “Thanks, President”

He didn’t know about the true facts of his full-scale attack, like the accusations of war crimes in Bucha, Irpin, and other places.

  • Flashback: Video of MPs fighting during passage of E-levy resurfaces after Dr Bawumia’s promise to scrap it

Flashback: Video of MPs fighting during passage of E-levy resurfaces after Dr Bawumia’s promise to scrap it

An old video from the tumultuous passage of the levy has resurfaced online following Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia‘s recent pledge to abolish the controversial levy.

Members of Parliament on the said day were engaged in a fistfight following a disagreement during the voting on the government’s E-levy bill.

The fight ensued when the MPs were voting in a headcount to decide whether the E-levy bill should be accepted under a certificate of urgency.

The footage, captured during the parliamentary session, depicts a chaotic scene as Members of Parliament engaged in a physical fight. The resurfacing of this video comes shortly after Dr Bawumia’s announcement that, if elected president, he intends to scrap the contentious tax, among others.

The video, now serving as a stark reminder of the heated exchanges and discord that surrounded the introduction of the E-levy, has left Ghanaians questioning the essence of the levy and all the controversy that surrounded its passage.

At the time, the levy faced fierce opposition from various quarters, especially the Minority in Parliament, with critics arguing that it would place undue financial burdens on already struggling citizens.

Dr. Bawumia’s promise to eliminate the E-levy, along with other taxes, has elicited mixed reactions from the public.

While some have welcomed the move as a step towards alleviating the financial strain on ordinary Ghanaians, others remain skeptical about the feasibility and implications of such a decision.

  • Ex-leader of Brazil Bolsonaro’s passport to be confiscated

Ex-leader of Brazil Bolsonaro’s passport to be confiscated

The former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, has been told to give up his passport within 24 hours as the police are still looking into the 2023 incident when his supporters attacked the Congress.

A lawyer for the ex-leader said Mr. Bolsonaro will follow the order given by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

Mr Bolsonaro was in the United States when the attack on Congress happened.

He said before that he was unfairly targeted by the law.

In March 2023, two months after the Congress attack, the ex-president came back to Brazil. He is being investigated for several things.

In June, he was told he can’t run for office for eight years because he questioned Brazil’s electronic voting system without evidence.

However, most attention has been focused on the probe of the events on 8 January 2023, when his followers – who were upset that he had barely lost the election to his opponent on the left – attacked Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace in Brasília.

The federal police in Brazil didn’t give much information but said they were doing an operation on Thursday to stop a criminal group that was trying to take over the government.

As part of the operation, they were searching many buildings and arresting four people. They did not say who the arrested people are.

The news said that two people who used to work for Mr. Bolsonaro, Filipe Martins and Marcelo Câmara, have been taken into custody.

In the last year, over 1,400 people were accused of being involved in the riots, but only a small number have been found guilty.

  • I’ve successfully restored Asante’s soul and spirit – Otumfuo

I’ve successfully restored Asante’s soul and spirit – Otumfuo

Ashanti overlord Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has declared that he has restored the spirit and soul of Ashanti by receiving artefacts looted from Kumasi approximately 150 years ago at the Manhyia Palace.

Seven golden artefacts, taken from Kumasi in 1874, were traced to the Fowler Museum in California, United States.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II successfully secured the artefacts after numerous unsuccessful attempts by his predecessors, including Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh II.

A durbar of chiefs was organized at the Manhyia Palace to unveil the artefacts and commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Sagrenti War, which occurred in 1874.

This event marks the 25th anniversary of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s ascension to the Golden Stool.

“When we came here, Otumfuo, His Royal Majesty and I will quote him. He said that he has been able to return our (Asante) soul to its original place. “

“The items are still items that have spiritual relevance to us. They are still active; they  would be activated and they would be used.”

Professor Kwasi Ampene of the Department of Music at Tufts University in Massachusetts, United States, facilitated the return of the artefacts.

In an exclusive interview with JoyNews, Professor Ampene stated that the Asantehene is delighted with the return of the pure gold artefacts, considering them a restoration of the Asante soul to its original place.

According to Professor Ampene, a member of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences who extensively studied Asante culture, the items hold spiritual significance for the Asante Kingdom and will be actively used.

The artefacts include Asipim chairs made of silver, Sika Amena necklaces, armbands, and anklets – all crafted from pure gold.

Another set of artefacts is expected from the British Museum in April this year and will be unveiled on May 12, 2024, during the Akwasidae Festival celebrations.

Professor Ampene commended Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for initiating the return and acknowledged Opemsuo Osei Tutu Ababio for his efforts in empowering the facilitation process.

Ivor Agyemang Duah, the Technical Advisor to the project, informed Joy News that the artefacts will be accessible to the general public at the Manhyia Palace Museum once the museum undergoes rehabilitation.

  • 15 times Bawumia referenced Mahama’s 24-hr economy at Feb 7 lecture

15 times Bawumia referenced Mahama’s 24-hr economy at Feb 7 lecture

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent address to the nation, themed “Ghana’s Next Chapter: Selfless Leadership and Bold Policies,” has sparked widespread discussions, particularly regarding his stance on the 24-hour economy concept proposed by his political opponent, former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

During his address on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, Dr Bawumia touched on various initiatives and policies related to the advancement of Ghana’s digital infrastructure and services.

Of notable mention were his remarks concerning the implementation of round-the-clock operations across several sectors.

While these statements were not explicitly directed at his political rival, the timing and context suggest otherwise.

Here’s a breakdown of the key points made by Vice President Bawumia regarding 24-hour services:

    1. Today, because of mobile money interoperability (MMI), you can transfer money from a customer of one mobile money service provider to a customer of a different mobile money service provider and also make payments from your mobile money account into any bank account and you can receive payments from any bank account into your mobile money account. This can be done 24 hours a day!

    2. You can also receive remittances from abroad directly onto your mobile phone without the need to go to a bank or Western Union Money Transfer. Because the mobile money account performs just like a bank account, as a result of MMI, over 90% of Ghanaian adults have mobile money accounts that function like bank accounts. We have basically solved the problem of financial exclusion in Ghana. The State of Inclusive Instant Payment Report has ranked Ghana as number one in Africa in terms of access to financial inclusion! Ghana has 100% access to financial inclusion! Today because of digitalization anyone can do banking and digital financial transactions 24 hours a day!

    3. The digital payments infrastructure is boosting e-commerce in Ghana. Businesses are booming over Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Many people who cannot afford to rent or build shops are able to do business on the internet at little cost with deliveries helped by digital address and payments using mobile money interoperability. This can be done 24 hours a day! Ghana is currently ranked number 6 in Africa in terms of e-commerce after Mauritius, Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia and Morocco according to UNCTAD.

    4. We digitalized the passport office with oversight from my office. With digitization, the average turnaround time for the acquisition of passports has been significantly reduced and today you can apply for your passport online from home 24 hours a day.

    5. With the digitalization of motor insurance in Ghana, Members of the public can also self-check the authenticity of their insurance policy by dialing a USSD code *920*57# and follow the instructions thereafter to know the insurance status of the vehicle 24 hours a day!

    6. Today you can also apply for insurance for your vehicle on your mobile phone and receive your insurance sticker electronically 24 hours a day!

    7. With the digitalization of the scholarship secretariat, candidates can now apply for scholarship from the comfort of their homes 24 hours a day, take an aptitude test and be interviewed in their own districts.

    8. For services onboarded and receiving payments, you should be able to apply for and obtain any government service online through the Ghana.Gov platform 24 hours a day!

    9. With oversight from my office, digitalization at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has allowed buying electricity credit on your mobile phone through the Mobile ECG App. This has provided relief to customers who no longer have to queue for long hours to buy electricity units. Also, for people whose credit runs out at odd hours they can purchase electricity credit on their mobile phones 24 hours a day!

    10. Now for people who need a new service or separate meter from ECG, they can also apply online 24 hours a day!

    11. Many people, including highly educated people, find the process of filing taxes complex. To make it easier and less cumbersome to file taxes, I challenged the GRA to come up with a simple to use mobile App to enable ordinary people file and pay taxes using their mobile phones and this has been done. Today, you can file your taxes 24 hours a day!

    12. Currently, if you are referred from a hospital like Tamale Teaching Hospital to Korle-bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, you do not need to carry a folder. All your records will be seen and monitored by the doctor in Korle Bu when you arrive. Patients will have only one digital folder wherever they go. • Prof Kobby Mensah slams Bawumia’s Feb 7 address to the nation

Prof Kobby Mensah slams Bawumia’s Feb 7 address to the nation

Senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, Prof Kobby Mensah, has offered his perspective on Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s pledge to revoke certain taxes introduced by the current government if he assumes the presidency on January 7, 2025.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), unveiled his vision for Ghana during an event on Wednesday, February 7, 2024. Among his declarations, he announced plans to eliminate taxes on electronic transactions (E-levy), gambling (Betting Tax), and emissions (Emission Levy) should he win the upcoming general elections.

“Taxes on gambling will be scrapped under my administration. There will be no emissions tax under my administration. 15% tax on electricity will be abolished by 2025 if it’s still on our administration,” Dr Bawumia stated.

Responding to this announcement in a post shared on social media platform X, Prof Kobby Mensah suggested that Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to rescind taxes implemented by his own government reflects an acknowledgment of governmental shortcomings.

Prof Mensah likened the vice president’s assurance to that of a market vendor conceding to customers that their products are substandard.

“Only Bawumia can go to customers and say ‘you see the products we are selling? They are trash!’” he wrote on X.

The statement by Prof Mensah underscores a critical perspective on Dr. Bawumia’s promises, emphasizing the potential implications and interpretations of the vice president’s stance on taxation reform.

Man faces charges for killing father and daughter

A 37-year-old man went to court because he is accused of killing a father and his five-year-old daughter in Ireland.

Anthony O’Brien, who was 30 years old, and his daughter Nadine passed away in a fire at their home in Killeen Heights in Tralee, County Kerry, twelve years ago.

Philip Griffin, who was sent back from the UK, has also been accused of setting fire to something.

He was kept in jail until his trial.

The people next door heard yelling from the family’s house at around 2am on May 12, 2012.

Mr O’Brien assisted his wife, Kelly O’Brien, in getting away.

He tried to save Nadine, but they both passed away.

Garda Det Sgt Ernie Henderson said in court that Mr. Griffin was taken into custody at Dublin Airport on Wednesday.

The defendant did not say anything when the charges were read to him in court.

His lawyer requested for him to get medical help while he is in jail.

Mr Griffin was given free help from a lawyer because the court found out he had no money or belongings.

He will have to go to court in Tralee next Wednesday.

The judge said no to the state’s request to limit news about the case so that people can’t figure out who Nadine O’Brien is.

He said it didn’t matter because the case had already been reported, and he wasn’t sure if he could do something about it.

  • Akufo-Addo, Ken Ofori-Atta, Gabby absent at Bawumia’s Feb 7 lecture

Akufo-Addo, Ken Ofori-Atta, Gabby absent at Bawumia’s Feb 7 lecture

High-level government officials, including Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, President Nana Akufo-Addo, and presidential cousin Gabby Otchere-Darko, were conspicuously absent from Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s public lecture on February 7, 2024.

The event, titled “Bawumia Speaks,” was held at the Kofi Ohene Konadu Auditorium of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), where Dr. Bawumia outlined his vision for Ghana’s future if elected president in the upcoming December elections.

Despite the notable absences, Dr. Bawumia delivered a comprehensive address, articulating his plans for the nation’s development and addressing key policy issues. Notably, he reiterated his opposition to the electronic financial transaction tax, known as the e-levy, and pledged to abolish it if elected as President.

The absence of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who has been a key figure in the government’s economic policies, raised eyebrows, particularly considering his advocacy for the e-levy, which Dr. Bawumia vehemently opposes.

Similarly, the absence of President Nana Akufo-Addo and his cousin Gabby Otchere-Darko, who are influential figures within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), was noted.

While no official explanation was provided for their absence, political analysts speculate that it could signify underlying tensions within the party or disagreements over policy directions.

Despite the absence of these key figures, Dr. Bawumia’s lecture received attention from various quarters, with attendees praising his vision for Ghana’s future and his commitment to addressing pressing issues facing the nation.

As Ghana prepares for the December elections, the absence of prominent government officials at Dr. Bawumia’s lecture has sparked discussions about the internal dynamics within the ruling party and its implications for the upcoming polls.

  • French actress accuses directors of past sexual abuse

French actress accuses directors of past sexual abuse

French police are looking into a complaint made by actress Judith Godrèche against director Benoît Jacquot. She says he raped her in the past.

Ms Godrèche, 51, says that Mr Jacquot, 77, raped her when she was 14 years old in 1986 and continued to hurt her in their relationship until the 1990s.

Her lawyer told the AFP news agency that she filed a complaint on Tuesday.

Mr Jacquot strongly says he didn’t do what she claims.

Ms Godrèche talked on French radio on Thursday and said that when she was 15, another famous French director, Jacques Doillon, did something wrong to her. His lawyer says he also strongly disagrees with the actress’s accusations.

At the beginning of her career, Ms Godrèche was famous for her roles in two movies made by Benoît Jacquot, The Beggars (1987) and The Disenchanted (1990).

Benoît Jacquot has been making movies since the mid-1970s. In 2012, his drama Farewell, My Queen was shown at the 62nd annual Berlin International Film Festival.

Judith Godrèche has acted in many movies such as The Overnight (2015), The Spanish Apartment (2002), and The Man in the Iron Mask (1998). These are some of her most famous movies.

She had talked about her relationship with Benoît Jacquot on a TV show about her life in French cinema. She didn’t say his name.

She posted his name on social media last month because she saw a documentary from 2011 where the director talked about his relationship with a young person, and it made her decide to do it.

In an interview with Le Monde, Mr. Jacquot said he does not agree with what Judith Godrèche is saying about him.

AFP talked to him on Wednesday. He said he still believes what he said in the newspaper and doesn’t want to say anything else about it.

Ms Godrèche said more things during a radio interview on France Inter on Thursday. She talked about a private scene while filming for Jacques Doillon’s movie The 15 Year Old Girl in 1989.

She said she was hurt when she lived with Jane Birkin and also during a sex scene in a movie.

“He hired an actor, we began recording and then he replaced the actor and played the role himself,” she said.

“I don’t have a shirt on and he’s touching me inappropriately, and he’s kissing me, and Jane can see everything and it’s really hard for her to watch. ”

Marie Dosé, the lawyer for Jacques Doillon, said he learned about the accusations from the news. He strongly denies them and wants to tell his side in court.

The public prosecutor has given the complaints against both directors to the Juvenile Protection Brigade in Paris.

  • Azerbaijan election: Monitors criticise President Ilham Aliyev after winning referendum

Azerbaijan election: Monitors criticise President Ilham Aliyev after winning referendum

The fifth term of Ilham Aliyev as President of Azerbaijan has been confirmed by election officials, who reported his victory with more than 92% of the vote.

However, people from other countries say that there was no serious competition against him.

The main opposing parties did not participate in the election, and one leader from those parties said it was not a real democracy.

The vote on Wednesday was supposed to happen in 2025, but it was moved up because the government took over a area controlled by ethnic Armenian rebels.

Mr Aliyev competed with six other candidates, but none of them disagreed with his leadership.

Many people went to the streets in the capital Baku to celebrate the president being elected again.

State media said that election officials reported Mr. Aliyev got 92. 05% of the votes, with 93% of the ballots counted. About 76% of people voted.

The president usually gets more than 85% of the vote in elections, but some people say the elections are not fair.

Artur Gerasymov, who oversaw a mission for the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, said on Thursday that President Aliyev was not effectively questioned. “which led to a competition without real diversity”

President Aliyev said there will be a vote earlier than planned because more people like him after Azerbaijan’s army did well in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Azerbaijan quickly took control of the region in September, ending Armenian rule that had lasted for 30 years. This region is officially considered to be part of Azerbaijan.

Many of the 120,000 Armenian people left and went to Armenia. Some of the top leaders in the breakaway area were arrested and are being held in jail in Azerbaijan, accused of different crimes.

Mr Aliyev said the victory in Karabakh is a very important event in Azerbaijan’s history. He also said the election will start a new era because it is happening in all of Azerbaijan for the first time.

Ali Kerimali, the head of the Popular Front, a big opposition party in Azerbaijan, said that the country doesn’t have the right conditions for fair elections.

“Freedom to gather is limited, media are controlled by the government, and people who disagree with the government are being quieted,” he said.

Mr Aliyev became the leader in 2003 after his father, Heydar Aliyev, passed away. His family took control in 1993, just after Azerbaijan became free from the former Soviet Union.

Lately, Azerbaijani officials have been putting more pressure on media that is not controlled by the government, and have arrested a number of journalists who say things that are critical of them.

Azerbaijan is being criticized by Amnesty International for not allowing people to speak freely and for trying to silence those who criticize the president.

Several leaders from other countries have told Mr. Aliyev they are happy for him winning the election, including the President of Turkey, the President of China, and the President of Iran.

  • Head of Haiti calls for calm as violent protests grow

Head of Haiti calls for calm as violent protests grow

Haiti’s leader, Prime Minister Ariel Henry, went on the radio on Thursday to ask Haitians to come together to help the country.

Mr Henry spoke to the whole country because lots of people were protesting and asking him to leave his job.

Haiti has had a lot of problems with gangs fighting for a long time.

In the latest event, police shot and killed five armed members of a group that was supposed to be protecting the environment. Some people think the group has turned into a military-like group.

Tensions were increasing in Haiti before 7 February, the day when new presidents usually take office.

Haiti does not have a president since Jovenel Moïse was killed by Colombian soldiers in July 2021.

Mr Henry became Mr. Moïse’s prime minister only one day before the former president was killed by gunfire. He took office two weeks after Mr Moïse was killed.

He has been in charge of the country for a while and keeps saying he will finally hold the elections that have been postponed for a long time.

In December 2022, he made an agreement with political parties and community groups to have elections in 2023. The new government would then be ready to start on 7 February 2024.

But in 2023, there were no elections because Mr. Henry said that the increasing gang violence made it difficult to have a fair election.

Haiti has not had any elected government officials since January 2023 because they have failed to hold presidential and legislative elections.

People are upset about the lack of leadership in politics and the high levels of violence. This has caused protests because almost 314,000 people have been forced to leave their homes.

Gangs are controlling the country. We are not able to eat. One person told the news that they can’t send their kids to school.

Another person protesting said to AFP, “this Wednesday is a very important day”. “Today is the day that Ariel Henry has to go away from his job. ”

The situation got worse when Guy Philippe, a former police chief who helped remove President Bertrand Aristide 20 years ago, came back.

Philippe was sent back to Haiti in November from the United States. He had been in prison there because he admitted to taking bribes to guard drug shipments.

Ever since he came back, he has been making videos on social media asking people to fight against Mr Henry.

On Tuesday, Philippe was seen in the main city, Port-au-Prince, greeting his fans. Later, he talked on a live radio show and told listeners that the fight is just starting.

The situation got worse as police faced armed members of Haiti’s Security Brigade for Protected Areas and shot five of them dead.

Some people say that some members of BSAP are friends with Philippe and the group has been accused of becoming more like a military group than a group that protects the environment.

Mr Henry tried to control the brigade’s power by firing the department head in charge of the group, but that just made the members even angrier.

He asked the United Nations to send soldiers to Haiti to stop the gangs that control a big part of the country. Only Kenya has said they will send officers so far.

Kenya’s assistance is uncertain because a court stopped the deployment.

  • Ghana suspends contentious power tax following commotion

Ghana suspends contentious power tax following commotion

The government of Ghana has stopped its plan to put a 15% tax on power because people were very angry about it and thought it would make living expenses even higher.

The government wanted to charge VAT on people who use electricity at home.

The worker’s unions didn’t like the new tax and said they will have protests all over the country next week.

Officials now say that the plan has been postponed until discussions are held to solve the argument.

A few days after the government started charging a fee for fuel emissions, people had different reactions to it.

Ghanaians must now pay a yearly fee for the carbon emissions that come from their cars or trucks that run on petrol or diesel.

Critics worry that the extra taxes could make the economy even worse, making it harder for people to afford things like gas that they need to live.

The finance ministry told the two main power companies to stop adding the new tax for now.

This is to talk a lot and to get support from people in the industry and labor unions, because there are serious concerns about how this will affect consumers and businesses. “The government wants the electricity companies ECG and NEDCO to stop charging VAT for now. They need to talk to important people like organized workers before they can start again. ”

The TUC said the government has not told them officially about its decision.

So, the protests that are supposed to happen next Wednesday are still happening according to Joshua Ansah, who is the TUC’s deputy secretary general. He told the media.

Trade unions believe that adding more taxes will make it harder for families and companies, making the cost of doing business even more expensive.

“We told the government that we can’t afford to pay VAT on electricity. We want the tax to be removed right away,” Mr Ansah said.

Ghana is facing its worst economic problem in a long time, and the government is working hard to make more money.

It agreed to a $3 billion (£2. 4 billion) rescue plan with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to help with the crisis.

For many years, Ghana has not had enough electricity, causing frequent power outages called “dumsor” in the Akan language.

The country in West Africa gets a lot of its power from water and heat, but these sources are not always taken care of well.

In recent years, the country has started depending a lot on gas for making electricity, and if there is not enough gas, then there are power cuts.

Triumphant Nigerians make fun of South Africans with Tyla hit

A video of people from Nigeria celebrating their soccer team’s win against South Africa in the Africa Cup of Nations is getting a lot of views on social media.

In the video, fans of the Super Eagles team tease their opponents by pouring water on themselves and singing the song “Water” by South African singer Tyla.

On Sunday, she won an award for Best African Music Performance at the Grammys, by doing better than many famous Nigerian singers.

Upset Nigerians promised to get back at the Afcon semi-final.

The hashtag #NGARSA is popular in Nigeria and South Africa as people make jokes about each other.

Nigerians and South Africans have been joking with each other that their Jollof Rice is tastier than South Africa’s Bobotie dish.

However, Nigerians think Afrobeats music is the best and they believe South Africans should just stick to dancing to amapiano, a type of music that’s a mix of hip-hop, soul, and slowed-down house music.

Jimmy Odukoya, a well-known Nigerian pastor, has also joked about Bafana Bafana’s performance, praising them despite their loss. He told the South African players that they need water.

He said: “If it helps, it’s really good water. ”

Nigeria will play against Ivory Coast on Sunday in the final match.

Many people in South Africa will probably support the team from Ivory Coast.
