What logic is this? – Clement Apaak slams Kofi Bentil for exculpating Bawumia from Akufo-Addo-govt corruption tag

Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, has slammed Vice President of Imani Africa, Kofi Bentil for labeling the current administration as the most corrupt while simultaneously exonerating the Vice President.

Dr Apaak raised concerns over the rationale behind Kofi Bentil’s defense of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia amidst corruption allegations against the Akufo-Addo government.

In a recent edition of Newsfile, Kofi Bentil asserted that the Akufo-Addo government is more corrupt than the previous John Dramani Mahama administration.

However, he urged Ghanaians to consider voting for Dr. Bawumia as president, suggesting that Dr Bawumia should not be held accountable for the failures of the Akufo-Addo government.

Dr Apaak criticized this argument, stating that it lacks logical coherence. He argued that if the current government is indeed more corrupt than the previous administration, then Dr. Bawumia cannot be absolved of responsibility for the alleged corruption.

“The Vice President is part of the corrupt government, which has mismanaged the economy. In fact, he is the 2nd in command. So, how can we blame the government yet excuse the Vice President? Such an illogical argument can not be without some form of inducement,” Dr. Apaak emphasized.

Furthermore, Dr. Apaak urged Ghanaians to pay attention to Mr. Isaac Adongo’s presentation on February 14, 2024. Mr. Adongo’s presentation is titled “Ghana’s Next Chapter, the Height of Clueless Leadership, next installment of Bold LIES, Hardship and Aggravated Economic Mismanagement!”

This ongoing debate underscores the contentious issue of corruption within the Akufo-Addo administration and raises questions about the accountability of high-ranking officials, including Dr. Bawumia, in addressing these allegations.

  • It’s a pity – Akufo-Addo reacts to Mahama’s WASSCE cheating claims

    It’s a pity – Akufo-Addo reacts to Mahama’s WASSCE cheating claims

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has rebuffed former President John Dramani Mahama’s doubts about the authenticity of the West Africa Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results by Ghanaian students, labeling them as “unfortunate and misguided.” This response came during the 187th speech and prize-giving day at Wesley Girls’ High School in Cape Coast.

Mr. Mahama had expressed concerns about cheating in examinations during one of his ‘Building Ghana Tours’, stating that some teachers connive with students to cheat, ultimately affecting the credibility of the certification.

In a strong rebuttal, President Akufo-Addo asserted that the large excess and improved quality of the WASSCE results have gone hand in hand, contrary to claims questioning their integrity. He lamented the injection of politics into such matters, particularly criticizing Mr. Mahama and other individuals for attributing the results to cheating without any substantiated basis.

“Contrary to the normal experience, the large excess and improved quality have gone hand in hand. Long may this continue”.

“It is a pity though”, he added, “that the sad nature of aspects of contemporary Ghanaian politics drove some otherwise allegedly responsible people including your former president and current NDC presidential candidate to question the integrity of the results happily without any foundation and to attribute these results to cheating,” Mr. Akufo-Addo decried.

Addressing the students directly, President Akufo-Addo asked if they cheat in examinations, to which they responded with a resounding “no.” He emphasized that their response sends a clear message to those who expressed doubts about the integrity of the results.

Highlighting the achievements of what he proudly called “the Akufo-Addo graduates,” the president noted that the WASSCE results from 2020 to 2023 demonstrate a significant improvement in the quality of education. He pointed out that these years are the only ones in the past decade where more than 50% of candidates obtained A1 to C6 in all core subjects.

President Akufo-Addo’s remarks underscore the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education in Ghana and defending the integrity of examination results. As the country continues to strive for educational excellence, such affirmations from the highest office serve to bolster confidence in the education system and celebrate the achievements of Ghanaian students.

  • EOCO is guided by law; no ‘powers from above’ can order me about – Tiwaa Addo-Danquah

Executive Director of Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), COP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, has reaffirmed her office’s independence from political pressure in carrying out investigations and prosecutions. Her statement comes amidst a suspected money laundering case involving former Water and Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah, which was referred to EOCO by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) after charges against Dapaah were dropped due to insufficient evidence.

Addressing an anti-corruption forum, Ms Addo-Danquah emphasized her commitment to the rule of law, stating, “Fortunately for me, I have not had [directives from above], because you are guided by the law.” She stressed the importance of solid evidence in pursuing legal action and expressed dedication to fulfilling her mandate without interference.

In the case involving Ms. Dapaah, who was arrested in 2023 on suspicion of corruption after reporting a theft from her home, the OSP’s decision to drop charges against her was followed by a dismissal of an application to confirm the seizure and freezing of her assets by the court. Sources suggest that the OSP was given a deadline to unfreeze Ms. Dapaah’s accounts and return seized funds.

The ongoing trial involves Ms. Dapaah’s housemaids and other accomplices accused of stealing significant sums from her residence. The complexity of the case underscores the challenges of combating corruption in Ghana’s political landscape.

Ms. Addo-Danquah’s remarks aim to reassure the public of her office’s commitment to impartial investigations and adherence to legal procedures, particularly in high-profile cases like the one involving Ms. Dapaah. As Ghana continues its efforts to combat corruption, the independence and integrity of institutions like EOCO remain crucial in upholding the rule of law and fostering accountability in governance.

  • My ex-boyfriend gave me permission to cheat and broke up with me after I did it – Abena Korkor

My ex-boyfriend gave me permission to cheat and broke up with me after I did it – Abena Korkor

Ghanaian media personality Abena Korkor has recounted how her relationship with a man went ‘south’ because she confessed to him that she was bi-sexual.

Narrating the incident in an interview with Zionfelix, Abena Korkor revealed that she had dated this man for over a year. However, he was often not available to satisfy her sexual needs since he worked at a quarry and spent more time at work.

“I am a bi-sexual and he [used to] travel for months and I have a high libido. So I was using my sex toys. [At a point] I got tired of the sex toys so I went to Tinder,” she recounted.

Turning to Tinder, a dating app, Abena Korkor met a woman with whom she began a sexual relationship. She then informed her boyfriend about her newfound relationship with the woman. To her astonishment, her boyfriend initially seemed accepting of the situation, requesting photos and details of her interactions with the other woman.

However, despite his initial acquiescence, Abena Korkor’s boyfriend ultimately chose to end their relationship after she complied with his request and shared photos of her encounters with the other woman. The sudden breakup left Abena Korkor bewildered and emotionally distraught.

“He said okay, I should send him pictures and stuff like that, I did all that and after I sent them he told me he’s broken up with me,” she said.

During the interview, Abena Korkor revealed that she had been a bi-sexual since childhood.

  • Debate on dumsor resurfaces as NDC challenges Bawumia’s assertion on resolving power crisis

Debate on dumsor resurfaces as NDC challenges Bawumia’s assertion on resolving power crisis

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken issue with Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent assertion that the Akufo-Addo administration successfully resolved Ghana’s power crisis, colloquially known as ‘dumsor‘.

Dismissing Dr. Bawumia’s claim as inaccurate, the NDC urged Ghanaians to disregard it, emphasizing their view that the power crisis was effectively tackled during the tenure of former President John Mahama.

In a press statement issued in response to Dr. Bawumia’s remarks made during his address as the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Wednesday, February 7, the NDC contested the Vice President’s claims.

Dr. Bawumia had highlighted the achievements of the current government, including the resolution of ‘dumsor’, attributing this accomplishment to a decisive and deliberate government program aimed at stabilizing the economy and addressing societal challenges.

In contrast, the NDC praised former President John Mahama as a visionary leader who took responsibility for the power crisis and implemented measures to address it, ultimately ending load shedding by 2016.

“The visionary and experienced Nation Builder, President Mahama accepted responsibility for the problem and promised to fix it. Indeed, by 2016 he had comprehensively fixed dumsor and ended load shedding,” the NDC stated in their press release.

The dispute underscores ongoing political debates surrounding the handling of the power crisis in Ghana. As the country prepares for the upcoming elections, contrasting narratives regarding the resolution of ‘dumsor’ are likely to remain a focal point of contention between the major political parties.

EOCO Executive Director denies political pressure in handling of money laundering case

Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), COP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, has firmly stated that her office is not under political pressure when it comes to investigating and prosecuting cases.

This declaration comes in the wake of recent scrutiny following the referral of a suspected money laundering case involving former Water and Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah, to EOCO by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Weeks ago, the OSP had forwarded the case to EOCO for further investigation and potential prosecution after announcing the dropping of all charges against Cecilia Dapaah due to a lack of credible evidence.

Addressing an anti-corruption forum, COP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah emphasized that EOCO would only take action when solid evidence of wrongdoing is present. She stressed that her office operates independently, guided solely by the law and evidence at hand.

“Nobody will direct you when you have evidence. It is when you don’t have evidence, when you haven’t been able to put evidence together then someone can tell you not to do this,” COP Addo-Danquah explained. “But if you have done your work in such a way that you have evidence, very solid evidence, you just have to explain to the person that these are my evidence, these are A, B, and C and they are solid and I am presenting it to the court.”

The recent case involving Cecilia Dapaah saw the OSP initially filing charges against her for failing to declare her assets and seizing funds discovered in her possession. However, after a series of legal proceedings, including a repeat application for confirmation of seizure and freezing of bank accounts, the OSP decided to drop the charges against the former minister.

While the reasons behind this decision remain unclear, sources suggest that the OSP may have faced pressure from the court to unfreeze the accounts and return the seized funds to Cecilia Dapaah and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffuor, within a specified timeframe.

COP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah’s statements underscore the importance of upholding the rule of law and independence in the fight against corruption. As EOCO continues its investigations into the money laundering case, the public will be closely watching to ensure transparency and accountability in the pursuit of justice.

Speaking in a candid video shared by SikaOfficial on X, Aniawu detailed how he fell into the grip of substance abuse during his college years, shedding light on the societal pressures and personal struggles that led him down this destructive path.

Aniawu’s narrative begins with his entrance into college, where he encountered a senior figure who introduced him to the world of drugs.

Initially lured by promises of enhanced academic performance and increased sexual prowess, Aniawu found himself ensnared in a web of addiction that would wreak havoc on his life.

“I am a grateful recovering addict of crack, cocaine, heroin, weed, nicotine, pills like Rapinol, tramadol, diaspora and what have you,” Aniawu revealed. “It all started back in senior high school, first year.”

Driven by a desire to excel academically and emulate the success of his senior mentor, Aniawu succumbed to the allure of drugs, believing they would unlock his potential and elevate his standing among his peers.

Imani Africa reaffirms Kofi Bentil’s role despite affiliation with Bawumia

President of Imani Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has underscored the continued importance of Senior Vice President Kofi Bentil within the organization, despite the latter publicly expressing support for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Franklin Cudjoe emphasised that individual viewpoints on national matters are acknowledged but remain subordinate to the collective mission of the think tank.

In a recent Facebook post on Sunday, February 11, Cudjoe emphasized the significance of independent analysis and critique within an environment that values freedom and liberty.

He reassured that personal affiliations would not compromise Imani Africa’s commitment to impartial evaluation and discussion of crucial issues, maintaining that Bentil’s role within the organization remains unaffected by his political stance.

“Our individual wishes and preferences, however expressed or communicated, will always be overridden by the collective mandate we have carved for the organization, in putting out objective, independent analyses and critiques on many issues within an environment that guarantees individual freedom and liberty,” Cudjoe posted.

Cudjoe’s post highlights Imani Africa’s dedication to its core principles of impartiality and independent analysis despite individual members’ political affiliations. This affirmation comes in the wake of Bentil’s public endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections.

Bentil’s stance had elicited criticism, particularly from individuals affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who labeled him as conflicted. Additionally, Bentil revealed facing threats to his life and businesses since publicly endorsing Bawumia.

“People were meeting on attacking me, and there were efforts afoot…I don’t have a problem with debate and discourse, no matter how vigorous,” Bentil shared, underscoring his commitment to expressing his opinions without fear despite facing challenges.

These developments underscore the intersection of politics and civil society in Ghana, highlighting the importance of organizations like Imani Africa in promoting impartiality and independent analysis in national discourse.

  • Akufo-Addo breaks silence on Mahama’s criticism of WASSCE results

Akufo-Addo breaks silence on Mahama’s criticism of WASSCE results

President Nana Akufo-Addo has rebuffed claims made by former President John Mahama regarding the authenticity of the recent West Africa Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

Speaking at the 187th speech and prize-giving day at Wesley Girls High School in Cape Coast, President Akufo-Addo criticized Mahama’s assertions, stating that they lacked merit and were founded on misguided sentiments.

Mahama, who is also the 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), had expressed doubts about the credibility of the WASSCE results, suggesting that some invigilators collude with teachers to aid students in cheating during the examinations.

These claims were made during Mahama’s “Building Ghana Tour,” where he highlighted concerns about the potential long-term consequences of compromised examination integrity on the country’s educational system.

In contrast, Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum had announced that this year’s WASSCE results were the best since 2015, attributing the improvement to the quality of tuition under the free senior high school program.

President Akufo-Addo echoed this sentiment, applauding the performance of what he referred to as the “Akufo-Addo graduates.”

“The WASSCE results of the students I proudly call the Akufo-Addo graduates have shown that the quality of education has not deteriorated but on the contrary, it has improved significantly,” President Akufo-Addo asserted.

He further emphasized that the results of the Akufo-Addo graduates in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 demonstrated a remarkable achievement, with more than 50% of the candidates obtaining A1 to C6 grades in all core subjects.

Addressing the students directly, President Akufo-Addo sought to dispel any notions of cheating, asking, “Students of Wesley Girls High School, do you cheat in examinations?” He expressed hope that their resounding “no” would serve as a strong message to those who had questioned the integrity of the results.

President Akufo-Addo’s remarks underscore the ongoing debate surrounding education in Ghana and the differing perspectives on the performance and integrity of examination results. As the country grapples with these issues, his administration remains committed to upholding the quality of education and ensuring the success of Ghanaian students in national and international assessments.

  • Your father did not die from anaemia, stop lying – Inusah Fuseini ‘exposes’ Bawumia

Your father did not die from anaemia, stop lying – Inusah Fuseini ‘exposes’ Bawumia

Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has leveled serious accusations against Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, alleging that the VP fabricated details surrounding the demise of his own father, Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia.

During an interview on Citi TV on February 11, 2024, Fuseini, a former minister of lands and natural resources, challenged the authenticity of Dr. Bawumia’s account of his father’s passing, suggesting that Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia did not die from the conditions as portrayed by his son.

Fuseini emphatically stated, “Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia, who I knew very well, and I know Bawumia very well, did not die from anaemia. He didn’t die from anaemia. He died a natural death.”

The former legislator further questioned the credibility of Dr Bawumia’s statements, asserting that such falsifications erode public trust, a fundamental aspect of politics.

Citing instances of what he perceived as dishonesty on the part of the vice president, Fuseini referenced Dr. Bawumia’s previous comments during the 2016 election campaign regarding the end of the energy crisis (dumsor), juxtaposing them with recent claims made by the VP.

In contrast, during Dr. Bawumia’s presentation of his presidential vision to Ghanaians on February 9, 2024, he recounted the harrowing experience of losing his father due to the unavailability of blood for transfusion. Dr. Bawumia detailed how his family struggled to secure blood for his father’s medical emergency, ultimately leading to his father’s demise.

The vice president’s emotional anecdote formed part of his commitment to implementing medical drone delivery technology in Ghana, emphasizing the need to prevent avoidable deaths by ensuring timely access to essential medical supplies.

As accusations and counter-accusations continue to mark the political landscape, the veracity of Dr. Bawumia’s narrative remains a subject of contention, underscoring the significance of transparency and honesty in political discourse.

Swift medical attention was provided to the injured miners, who were promptly transported to the hospital. Thankfully, they are reported to be in stable condition, thanks to the timely intervention of healthcare professionals.

In response to the alarming incident, police authorities, in collaboration with the management of the mining company, have initiated investigations to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

The launch of a vigorous manhunt underscores the seriousness with which law enforcement is treating the incident, as efforts are intensified to track down the armed assailants responsible for the brazen attack.

The robbery has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting concerns about the safety and security of mining operations in the area. It also underscores the need for enhanced security measures to protect miners and deter criminal activities in mining communities.

As investigations unfold, authorities are urging anyone with relevant information regarding the incident to come forward and assist in the ongoing efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.

The swift resolution of this case is crucial not only for the victims and their families but also for restoring a sense of security and stability in the affected community.

  • Inusah Fuseini accuses Dr Bawumia of misrepresenting father’s death in political discourse

  • Okada rider nearly attacked by mob for knocking to death dog at Nungua

Okada rider nearly attacked by mob for knocking to death dog at Nungua

An Okada rider narrowly avoided a mob attack after inadvertently striking and killing a White man’s dog at the Nungua Coco Beach on Sunday morning (February 11, 2024).

The incident unfolded as a group of motorcyclists gathered at the beach, a customary practice for showcasing their riding abilities. In the midst of their activities, one rider, traveling at high speed, collided with one of three dogs present, resulting in the animal’s immediate demise.

Despite the gravity of the situation, the rider managed to evade the anger of the bystanders who had congregated, speculating on the potential repercussions had the victim been a beach goer instead.

According to reports from EIB Network Journalist, Murtala Inusah, who was present at the scene, officers from the Nungua District Headquarters arrived to investigate the incident and retrieve the motorbike after the dog’s owner filed a report.

Witnesses observed a woman, accompanying the distraught owner of the deceased dog, shedding tears uncontrollably as she mourned the loss of the pet. Eventually, the owner removed the dog’s body from the scene for burial.

ACP Agordzo, acquitted of treason charges seeks compensation for ordeal

A retired Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Dr Benjamin Kwasi Agordzo, who recently obtained acquittal and discharge from treason charges by an Accra High Court, has voiced his expectation of compensation from the State for the turmoil he and his family endured during the five-year legal battle.

In an interview, Dr Agordzo articulated his belief that he and his family deserve restitution for the injustices they faced.

He recounted the harrowing experience of being labeled a coup plotter by the State and the subsequent ordeal of facing trial for allegations he vehemently denied.

“Honestly, I ought to be compensated for all the wrongs done to me and my family,” Dr Agordzo expressed. “I have a wife, children who have shared many tears in silence.”

He vividly described the distressing impact the ordeal had on his family, highlighting the trauma experienced by his children who witnessed his arrest and subsequent legal proceedings. Dr Agordzo emphasized the emotional toll of being separated from his family during the ordeal and the anguish of enduring court appearances and interactions with security agencies over the years.

The retired ACP’s journey through the legal system came to a positive resolution when an Accra High Court acquitted and discharged him of the treason charges brought against him. However, the scars of the ordeal remain, prompting Dr. Agordzo to seek compensation as a form of redress for the injustices inflicted upon him and his family.

As the nation grapples with the aftermath of Dr. Agordzo’s acquittal and his call for compensation, discussions on the need for accountability and justice in legal proceedings are reignited. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding due process and protecting the rights of individuals, even in the face of serious allegations.

  • Flashback: Mahama’s appeal to Ghanaians to turn him from spare driver to main driver

Flashback: Mahama’s appeal to Ghanaians to turn him from spare driver to main driver

It appears that the ‘driver-mate’ analogy recently utilized by the Vice President is not a new phenomenon, as historical records indicate that Mr Mahama previously employed a similar statement to solicit votes from Ghanaians.

In a notable flashback to 2012, former President John Dramani Mahama, invoked the metaphor of a “spare driver” in the journey of national leadership, signaling his readiness to transition into the role of the “substantive driver.”

Delivering his closing remarks during a stimulating IEA Presidential Debate, Mr Mahama, who had ascended to the presidency from the Vice President position following the demise of late President John Evans Atta Mills, appealed to Ghanaians to elevate him from the role of a “spare driver” to that of the main driver, signaling his readiness to assume leadership.

He passionately appealed to Ghanaians to renew his mandate, evoking the legacy of his predecessor, the late President John Mills.

Reflecting on the achievements of the NDC government over the past four years, Mr Mahama underscored the importance of continuity, stating, “The NDC government has done a lot in four years. Our constitution gives presidents two terms. Take it that I am the spare driver or care taker.

“Prof Mills of blessed memory started the process and I am finishing his unexpired term. I believe the NDC government deserves a second term to be able to build on the foundation that it has laid in these four years. I am certain that Ghanaians will vote for me and turn me from the spare driver that I have been described as into the actual driver leading us to the destination we want to go to,” President John John Mahama said in his closing remarks to a stimulating IEA Presidential Debate held in Accra.

Fast forward to the present day, a similar appeal emerged from the February 7 address of Dr. Bawumia, the current Vice President, who called upon Ghanaians to move him from the position of a “mate” to that of the main driver.

Dr Bawumia’s recent invocation of the “driver-mate” analogy to galvanize public support bears a striking resemblance to a past appeal made by former President John Dramani Mahama.

  • Ghanaian statesman JB Danquah honored with befitting funeral 58 years after passing

Ghanaian statesman JB Danquah honored with befitting funeral 58 years after passing

In a poignant tribute to one of Ghana’s founding fathers, Joseph Boakye Danquah, the Ofori Panin Fie, led by Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has solemnly conducted the final funeral rites of the late statesman on February 10, 2024,

This marks 58 years since his demise on February 4, 1965.

JB Danquah, a pivotal figure in the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) and a staunch advocate for Ghana’s independence, received a fitting send-off at the forecourt of Ofori Panin Fie in Kyebi, Eastern Region, as announced in the funeral poster shared by Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko.

At the time of his passing, JB Danquah held the esteemed position of Twafohene of Okyeman, bearing the stool name Barima Kwame Kyeretwie Boakye Dankwa I. His death left the stool vacant until the recent enstoolment of Katakyie Kwame Boakye Dankwa II on December 16, 2023, as his successor.

In adherence to tradition, the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council ordained that the new Twafohene organize a memorial service for his predecessor on February 4, 2024, preceding the final funeral rite known as “Dɔteyie” on February 10, 2024.

During the solemn ceremony, the mortal remains of the late Twafohene were laid in state, allowing chiefs, queens, royals, and mourners to pay their respects to the distinguished leader.

The protocol of the final funeral rites dictated that such ceremonies could only be conducted after a successor was enstooled to occupy the vacant black stool. Okatakyie Ababio Boakye Danquah, the newly installed Twafohene, had previously pledged allegiance to Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin.

The commemoration attracted a diverse array of attendees, including indigenes of Akyem land, traditional rulers from across the nation, politicians, clergy, and other notable figures, all gathering to honor the enduring legacy of JB Danquah.

Joseph Kwame Kyeretwie Boakye Danquah, fondly remembered as JB Danquah, was not only a key architect of Ghana’s independence movement but also a prolific writer, lawyer, philosopher, and historian. As the first West African to earn a PhD from a British university, he left an indelible mark on Ghana’s history, including proposing the name “Ghana” for the newly independent nation.

Despite his immense contributions, JB Danquah faced persecution under the government of Kwame Nkrumah and his Convention People’s Party (CPP), enduring multiple arrests and detentions under the Preventive Detention Act until his passing in prison in February 1965.

  • Kwesi Pratt Jnr questions Mahama’s use of ‘Jack Toronto’ nickname for Akufo-Addo

Kwesi Pratt Jnr questions Mahama’s use of ‘Jack Toronto’ nickname for Akufo-Addo

Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has raised concerns about former President John Mahama’s use of the nickname ‘Jack Toronto’ for President Akufo-Addo without his permission.

In a statement, Pratt questioned why Mahama had attributed his nickname to Akufo-Addo without seeking his consent or acknowledging any copyright issues. He expressed surprise at Mahama‘s appropriation of the nickname, emphasizing that it was originally associated with him.

The background to this controversy stems from remarks made by former President Mahama during a town hall meeting in Tamale as part of his “Building Ghana Tour.” Mahama asserted that no member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) could evade responsibility for Ghana’s current economic challenges, including President Akufo-Addo, whom he referred to as ‘Jack Toronto.’

Mahama’s comment implied that Akufo-Addo, along with other NPP members, bears accountability for the country’s economic difficulties. He suggested that decisions made by Akufo-Addo and his associates during their tenure in government contributed to Ghana’s present economic woes.

However, Pratt’s objection centers on the use of the ‘Jack Toronto’ nickname, which he claims is his own. He contends that Mahama’s attribution of the nickname to Akufo-Addo without his permission raises questions about intellectual property rights and the proper use of personal identifiers.

The controversy underscores tensions between political figures and media personalities in Ghana, as well as broader debates about accountability and responsibility within the country’s political landscape.

  • My post has nothing to do with Bawumia – Opoku Onyinah clarifies

My post has nothing to do with Bawumia – Opoku Onyinah clarifies

Former chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Dr Opoku Onyinah, has moved to clarify his recent cryptic social media post in the midst of swirling rumors suggesting his potential consideration for the running mate role of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 elections.

Addressing the diverse reactions sparked by his post, Apostle Onyinah firmly distanced himself from any political connotations associated with it.

He clarified that the post, made on Saturday, February 10, 2024, was actually inspired by a theme adopted by the Church of Pentecost back in 2015, centered around the concept of being a good steward of God in one’s generation.

In his latest social media update, Apostle Onyinah reiterated the origins of his previous post, shedding light on its intended message. He emphasized the importance of fulfilling one’s purpose in life and warned against the consequences of remaining silent or inactive in the face of societal challenges.

The apostle’s explanation sought to dispel any notion that his post was a subtle confirmation of his association with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia‘s candidature for the upcoming elections. He underscored the need for proper timing in interpreting social media content and reaffirmed his commitment to prioritizing his faith above all else.

The ongoing speculation regarding Dr. Bawumia’s choice for a running mate has led to several names being put forth, including that of Apostle Onyinah. Proponents of his candidacy highlight his stature and background in the Christian community, arguing that it would provide a valuable complement to Dr. Bawumia’s Muslim faith.

However, amidst the conjecture surrounding his potential political involvement, Apostle Onyinah remains steadfast in his dedication to serving his community and upholding his religious convictions. As the debate over Dr. Bawumia’s running mate continues, the role of religion and regional balance in shaping the ticket remains a topic of significant discussion.

  • Choice for running mate left to Bawumia; he’ll let us know when ready – Nana Akomea

Former Communication Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has disclosed that the party’s Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will announce his running mate by May.

Contrary to media reports suggesting that certain personalities have already been settled on, Akomea clarified that Dr. Bawumia has not yet made a decision regarding his running mate. He emphasized that several factors, including gender, origin, originality, and personality, will be considered in the selection process.

“The choice of the running mate is left to the flagbearer. He will consider a lot of factors… When he’s got a name or two, he will bring it to the political party,” Akomea stated.

He projected that Dr. Bawumia might make the announcement in April or May, allowing ample time for deliberation and decision-making.

Discussing the dynamics of the upcoming 2024 elections, Akomea highlighted the NPP’s majority presence in the Northern Region, attributing this success in part to Dr. Bawumia’s influence. He underscored Bawumia’s significance as a presidential candidate and noted the perceived threat he poses to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Akomea asserted that Bawumia’s candidacy has caused panic within the NDC, as evidenced by their focus on him during the election campaigns.

As Dr. Bawumia continues to engage with the nation and promote his ideas, Akomea predicts a further decline in the NDC’s influence.

  • Kofi Bentil warns Bawumia against including key members of Akufo-Addo govt in future administration

Kofi Bentil warns Bawumia against including key members of Akufo-Addo govt in future administration

Senior Vice President at IMANI-Africa, Kofi Bentil, has voiced his demand to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, urging him not to include any key members of the current administration led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his future government if elected president in the 2024 elections.

Bentil, a vocal advocate for a Bawumia presidency, emphasized that he personally conveyed this demand to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, warning that he would criticize Bawumia if he goes against this directive.

This declaration from the policy analyst follows Dr. Bawumia’s recent announcement of his key governance plans during a lecture where he outlined his intention to reverse some tax policies of the current government, under which he has served as vice president for the past seven years.

Despite criticisms of the Ghanaian economy’s performance under the current administration, Dr. Bawumia has positioned himself for the presidency, citing his limited power and influence as vice president, akin to a “driver’s mate.” He appeals for the chance to script his own narrative if elected president.

While some skeptics question the feasibility of Dr. Bawumia’s propositions, supporters like Kofi Bentil advocate for fair consideration, arguing that former President John Dramani Mahama of the opposition National Democratic Congress is not a preferable alternative.

Addressing the challenges posed by Dr. Bawumia’s association with the Akufo-Addo government, Bentil urged Ghanaian voters to support the vice president despite the shortcomings of the current administration.

Bentil highlighted concerns about corruption within the current government, expressing disappointment and emphasizing the need for change in leadership. He emphasized that Dr. Bawumia faces the burden of the current government’s shortcomings but urged voters to look beyond this and evaluate his potential as a leader.

Exclusive details emerge in murder case of Jirapa Dubai hotel owner

Fresh revelations have emerged regarding the shocking murder of Mr Eric Johnson, proprietor of the renowned Royal Cosy Hills Hotel popularly known as Jirapa Dubai in the Upper West Region.

An insider information from sources intimately connected to the victim’s family and the hotel’s staff, providing a deeper understanding of the circumstances surrounding his untimely demise.

Contrary to initial reports circulating on social media, which suggested that Mr Johnson was found murdered within the hotel premises, confirmed reports indicate that he was discovered deceased in his private residence adjacent to the hotel.

This revelation has brought a fresh perspective to the ongoing investigation into the high-profile case.

Insiders privy to the details of the incident have disclosed that Mr. Johnson, affectionately known as “Jirapa Dubai,” was found lifeless in his residence shortly before 1:30 am. The timing of the discovery aligns with reports indicating that his stolen vehicle was observed leaving his residence around the same time, implicating the murder in the early hours of the morning.

The modus operandi of the assailant(s) has also been brought to light, with reports suggesting that they gained unauthorized access to Mr. Johnson’s residence by scaling the perimeter wall using a ladder. Once inside, they utilized a mastercard to gain entry to his room, where the fatal attack took place.

Sources close to the investigation have revealed disturbing details about the condition in which Mr. Johnson’s body was found. Despite having completed his bath before the attack, he was discovered lying on the floor in nothing but a towel, with evidence of deep wounds believed to have been inflicted by his assailant(s).

The subsequent theft of Mr. Johnson’s car key and the subsequent getaway in his personal vehicle further underscore the gravity of the situation. However, the abandoned vehicle was later recovered by authorities, providing a potential lead in the ongoing investigation.

In a concerning turn of events, it has been revealed that the security personnel at Mr. Johnson’s residence inadvertently facilitated the assailant(s)’ exit from the premises. Mistaking the perpetrator(s) for Mr. Johnson, the security personnel reportedly allowed them to leave unchallenged, adding a layer of complexity to the unfolding narrative.

Amidst these developments, law enforcement agencies have taken swift action, detaining an individual suspected of involvement in the crime to assist with the investigation. Additionally, the body of the deceased has been transferred to the morgue at the Upper West Regional Hospital, where further forensic examination is expected to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding Mr. Johnson’s tragic demise.

  • NMC and GJA clash over blacklisting of NPP MPs accused of assaulting journalists

NMC and GJA clash over blacklisting of NPP MPs accused of assaulting journalists

The National Media Commission (NMC) and the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) find themselves at odds over the GJA’s decision to blacklist two New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament accused of assaulting journalists during the NPP’s parliamentary primaries.

GJA President Albert Dwumfour announced the decision to declare persona non grata Awutu Senya East MP Mavis Hawa Koomson and Farouk Aliu Mahama of Yendi following allegations of attacks on journalists from Cape FM and Citi TV. However, Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, Chairman of the NMC, criticized the GJA’s move, denouncing it as an overreach that undermines press freedom and the public interest.

Ayeboafo condemned the attacks on journalists but urged the GJA to pursue legal avenues for addressing such violence. He emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and due process, stating, “We cannot fight impunity with impunity.”

While acknowledging the severity of the assaults, Ayeboafo argued against a unilateral decision to blacklist or boycott individuals, suggesting that such actions may not be the most productive or functional to the public interest. Instead, he advocated for efforts to ensure justice through legal means.

However, GJA President Albert Dwumfour expressed disappointment and shock at Ayeboafo’s stance, describing it as “unfortunate.” He criticized Ayeboafo for not consulting with the GJA before making his comments, questioning the NMC’s commitment to safeguarding media independence and freedom in the country.

Dwumfour accused Ayeboafo of abandoning his constitutional mandate and siding against the media body, highlighting the need for collective action to address impunity against journalists.

The discord between the NMC and GJA comes amidst efforts by stakeholders, including the US Embassy in Ghana, to safeguard journalists ahead of the 2024 polls. A one-day workshop held in Kumasi aimed to promote peaceful journalistic platforms ahead of the upcoming general election, with participants including journalists, Electoral Commission officials, Ghana Police Service representatives, and political party representatives. Similar events have taken place in other regions across the country.

  • Supreme Court ‘snubs’ CRI; rules in favor of teachers in suit over strikes

Supreme Court ‘snubs’ CRI; rules in favor of teachers in suit over strikes

The Supreme Court of Ghana has dismissed a suit challenging the right of teacher unions to embark on strike.

The legal battle ensued when Child Rights International, a civil society group advocating for children’s rights, took Ghana’s three prominent teacher unions—like those GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT – to the Supreme Court over their strike actions.

Claiming the strikes infringed on children’s rights, the organization sought a declaration that the strikes were unconstitutional.

During the court proceedings on February 6, 2024, counsel for the plaintiff argued that while teachers have the right to unionize, striking is a limitation on this right, citing Article 28(4) of the Constitution.

However according to a report by Asaaseradioonline.com, the Supreme Court expressed dissatisfaction with this argument, emphasizing the importance of strikes in democracy and questioning the consistency of the plaintiff’s position.

Ultimately, the court ruled in favor of the teachers, affirming their right to unionize and strike.

The suit was deemed mischievous and incompetent, leading to its withdrawal by counsel, who was subsequently ordered to pay GHC40,000 in costs shared among the parties involved.

  • Military regime in Myanmar upholds conscription law

Military regime in Myanmar upholds conscription law

The government in Myanmar says that all young men and women must join the military, because the country is having a lot of problems.

The military took control from the regular government in a coup in February 2021.

However, in the past few months, it has lost in many fights against ethnic groups and people fighting against the government takeover.

The new rule says that men between 18 and 35, and women between 18 and 27, must serve in the military for at least two years.

No more information has been shared. However, the junta said in a statement that its defense ministry will “publish the required rules, procedures, announcements, orders, notifications and instructions”.

The military has lost many battles in the past few months, and it has been embarrassing.

Last year, three rebel groups in Shan State, along with other armed groups, took control of border crossings and roads used for trade with China.

The Arakan Army (AA) took control of Paletwa in Chin State last month, including the last military post at Meewa hilltop base.

Myanmar’s president, Myint Swe, who is a former general, has said that the country could split up if the government doesn’t stop the fighting.

A law that requires people to join the military was made in Myanmar in 2010, but it hasn’t been used yet.

During a state of emergency, the rules about how long someone has to work can be made longer, up to five years. People who don’t show up for jury duty can be sent to jail for the same amount of time.

In 2021, the country’s leaders said there was a big problem and they need more time to solve it. They decided to keep the special rules for another six months.

Myanmar was ruled by harsh military leaders for almost 50 years before they started moving towards democracy in 2011.

On February 1, 2021, the army said it had taken over the country.

Problems and fighting have hurt the country for a long time. More than one million people had to leave their homes, and thousands have died.

The army has not done well in recent battles against ethnic armed groups, and some of its supporters are worried and unhappy about it.

  • GUTA plans to establish social contract with presidential candidates ahead of 2024 elections

GUTA plans to establish social contract with presidential candidates ahead of 2024 elections

Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has disclosed its intention to establish a social contract with all presidential contenders in the upcoming 2024 election.

This initiative aims to foster accountability and transparency from the future head of state, should any of them assume office.

According to Dr. Joseph Obeng, President of GUTA, the association seeks to hold political aspirants accountable for their pledges and policies, particularly concerning matters affecting the business sector.

Dr. Obeng stressed the importance of engaging with all presidential hopefuls to evaluate their proposed policies and make well-informed decisions regarding their potential impact on traders and businesses.

A significant concern raised by GUTA revolves around tax compliance, with Dr. Obeng advocating for the implementation of affordable tax systems and the expansion of the tax base to enhance revenue generation.

He commended Vice President Dr. Bawumia’s proposal to introduce a flat tax regime, citing its potential to simplify tax obligations for both formal and informal sector participants.

Dr. Obeng emphasized the crucial role of GUTA’s engagement with political parties, highlighting the responsibility to provide input into their manifestos to facilitate national development.

He underscored the feasibility of implementing a flat tax rate, drawing on past experiences where similar tax policies yielded positive outcomes.

The proposed social contract between GUTA and presidential candidates underscores the association’s commitment to promoting a conducive business environment and advocating for policies that support economic growth and development.

By actively engaging with political stakeholders, GUTA aims to influence policy formulation and ensure that the interests of traders and businesses are adequately represented in the political discourse.

As Ghana gears up for the 2024 presidential election, GUTA’s initiative serves as a proactive measure to safeguard the interests of its members and contribute to the overall socio-economic progress of the country.

The outcome of these engagements is anticipated to shape the policy landscape and guide the future direction of governance in Ghana.

  • Ghana’s Deputy Majority Leader advocates for reform in LGBTQ+ laws

Ghana’s Deputy Majority Leader advocates for reform in LGBTQ+ laws

Deputy Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin,has proposed significant changes to the country’s criminal justice system concerning individuals found guilty of engaging in same-sex activities.

As Parliament deliberates on tightening laws surrounding same-sex relationships, Mr. Afenyo-Markin is advocating for a shift towards a more rehabilitative and socially integrative approach rather than solely punitive measures.

Representing the Effutu Constituency of the Central Region, Afenyo-Markin’s proposal centers on the adoption of plea bargaining and non-custodial punishments for offenders. He contends that this approach aligns with principles of social justice, economic pragmatism, human rights, and legislative accountability.

In a statement, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the necessity of moving beyond mere punishment towards the possibility of social reintegration, rehabilitation, and redemption for individuals involved in same-sex activities.

He argued that opting for non-custodial punishments and structured plea bargaining would result in a more humane, financially sustainable, and globally acceptable legal system consistent with international human rights standards.

The proposal comes against the backdrop of Ghana’s prison overpopulation crisis, which has raised concerns about human rights violations due to extreme overcrowding. Afenyo-Markin believes that by adopting the approach outlined in his proposal, Parliament can alleviate pressure on the criminal justice system, redirect funds to areas of urgent need, and promote a restorative approach to justice.

Afenyo-Markin’s advocacy for reform underscores the ongoing debate surrounding LGBTQ+ rights and legal frameworks in Ghana. While same-sex relationships are currently criminalized in the country, there is a growing call for a more inclusive and rights-based approach to addressing issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

As Parliament considers Afenyo-Markin’s proposal, it is expected to spark further dialogue and deliberation on the intersection of law, human rights, and social justice in Ghana. The outcome of these discussions could have far-reaching implications for the LGBTQ+ community and the broader landscape of justice and equality in the country.

Argentina’s first female saint made as Pope and Milei meet

The first female saint from Argentina was made a saint on Sunday. It was the first time that Pope Francis and the president of Argentina met in person.

The President, Javier Milei, who believes in libertarian ideas, had said before that the Pope is an “idiot” and supports communism.

After he started his job in December, he has been less critical.

Mr Milei went to the Vatican to attend a Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica There, he met and hugged the 87-year-old Pope.

They will see each other again in a private meeting at the Vatican on Monday.

María Antonia de Paz y Figueroa, also known as Mama Antula, was a woman in the 18th century who some people think was the first feminist in Argentina.

She gave up her family’s wealth to help the poor and keep the Jesuit movement going in Argentina, even after the religious order was stopped.

The Pope said on Friday that she is a special person for the people in Argentina and for the whole Church.

The political and religious leaders are meeting in Argentina at a time when the country is facing big political problems. Inflation is very high at 200% and 40% of the people are living in poverty.

Many people in Argentina are very upset about Mr. Milei’s plans to cut spending and decrease the value of their money by 50%.

He said he wants to take away some of the protections for workers, get rid of limits on how much landlords can charge for rent, and stop the government from giving money to help people buy things they need every day.

Mr Milei says the country needs big and quick changes to fix its really bad economic problems.

Soon after winning the election in November, Mr. Milei asked the Pope to come to Argentina in 2024. He called the Pope “Your Holiness”.

The religious leader from Buenos Aires hasn’t gone back to his home country since he became Pope in 2013.

  • US chopper accident kills Nigerian bank chief

US chopper accident kills Nigerian bank chief

The person who helped start Access Bank in Nigeria has died in a helicopter crash in California along with five other people.

Herbert Wigwe, his wife, son, and a former president of the Nigerian stock exchange all died in the accident.

President Bola Tinubu said that Mr. Wigwe’s death is a very sad and shocking event.

Investigators are searching the site in the desert in southern California to figure out what caused the crash.

The helicopter that had been rented crashed about 96km from Las Vegas on its way from Palm Springs to Boulder City in Nevada.

Nigerian media reported that a 57-year-old banker was traveling to Las Vegas for the Super Bowl on Sunday.

The San Bernardino county sheriff’s department said the accident happened close to Nipton, on the edge of the Mojave Desert Preserve. The weather was bad, with reports of rain and snow showers in the area.

Mr Wigwe started Access Bank in 1989. It became the biggest bank in Nigeria in 2018 when it bought Diamond Bank, its main rival.

In the last few years, Mr. Wigwe has been busy expanding his business to other countries in Africa. He bought banks in Kenya, South Africa, and Botswana.

He was going to start a new bank in Asia in early 2024.

People are sending their respects after hearing about his death. President Tinubu was very surprised and couldn’t understand it. The president’s office said that his death is really bad news for Nigeria and the banking industry in Africa.

In a newspaper article earlier this year, Mr. Wigwe said that putting money into college and universities is very important. It can help to stop lots of people from moving to other countries, which is causing problems in many places.

Thinking about that, he was working on creating his own school called Wigwe University. It was supposed to start in September in the oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria, where he came from.

We must look at the big picture and consider all aspects of global migration, starting with how we usually help other countries develop. The best place to control migration is not in the middle of the Mediterranean, the English Channel, or the Rio Grande. Many migrants are very eager to leave their home countries. He said he wanted to give back to society through his university.

Mahama accuses DCEs, NPP members of taking over mining, destroying water bodies

Former President John Dramani Mahama has sounded a clarion call, alleging that district chief executives (DCEs) and members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have reportedly seized control of mining operations in Ghana, sparking concerns about the integrity of the country’s mining sector.

Speaking during an address in the Ashanti Region, Mahama expressed deep apprehension over what he described as the alarming trend of DCEs and NPP members monopolizing mining concessions for their personal gain. He voiced his dismay at the apparent lack of oversight and regulation, emphasizing the need for urgent intervention to address the situation.

According to Mahama, the unchecked allocation of mining concessions to select individuals within the NPP ranks poses a significant threat to Ghana’s natural resources and environmental sustainability. He highlighted the adverse effects of unregulated mining activities on water bodies, noting with concern the increasing turbidity of water bodies in the southern region of the country.

Mahama pledged to take decisive action to combat illegal mining and protect Ghana’s land and water resources if elected back into office. He outlined plans to establish district offices dedicated to processing mining license applications and cracking down on illegal mining operations, aiming to restore transparency and accountability to the sector.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer’s remarks come amid mounting concerns over the proliferation of illegal mining activities and environmental degradation in Ghana. The issue of illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey,” has long been a contentious issue, with successive governments grappling to find lasting solutions to curb its detrimental effects on the environment and livelihoods.

Mahama’s pledge to prioritize the regulation of the mining sector underscores the critical importance of sustainable resource management and environmental conservation in Ghana’s development agenda.

As the country prepares for the upcoming elections, Mahama’s promises to address illegal mining and protect natural resources are likely to resonate with voters concerned about environmental sustainability and responsible governance.

Former Pentecost Chairman Rev Opoku Onyinah to be Dr Bawumia’s running mate?

Speculation is mounting within political circles following a Facebook post by former Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Opoku Onyinah, which subtly hints at his potential involvement in Ghanaian politics.

In his Facebook message, Apostle Onyinah shared insights from his script on “Words of Wisdom,” emphasizing the importance of utilizing one’s talents and not allowing them to go to waste. He underscored the responsibility of individuals to speak up, work diligently, and contribute positively to society, cautioning against the unintended empowerment of destructive forces through silence.

While not directly addressing the rumors surrounding his potential political role, Apostle Onyinah’s message resonates as a call to action for the silent majority to assert their influence for the betterment of society. He urged individuals not to be overshadowed by a vocal minority and emphasized the collective responsibility to actively participate in shaping the trajectory of communities, the nation, and the world.

The timing of Apostle Onyinah’s message has fueled speculation that he may be among the personalities being considered as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate ahead of the 2024 Presidential election. With Dr. Bawumia expected to announce his running mate imminently, Apostle Onyinah’s message serves as a timely reminder of the need for individuals to fulfill their purpose and contribute meaningfully to society.

Deputy Minority Chief Whip accuses Akufo-Addo of denying Speaker’s Constitutional role as acting president

Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, has accused President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of deliberately bypassing the constitutional mandate that grants the Speaker of Parliament the authority to act as president in the absence of both the president and vice president.

During an interview on Accra-based Okay FM on Friday, February 9, 2024, Mr. Ibrahim claimed that President Akufo-Addo has deliberately withheld this privilege from Speaker Alban Bagbin due to a purported lack of shared vision between them. He alleged that previous speakers, including Oquaye, Ala Adjetey, Madam Bamford Addo, Joe Adjaho, D. F. Annan, and Begyina Sekyi-Hughes, were all allowed to assume the position of acting president in accordance with the Constitution.

Mr. Ibrahim highlighted instances where even the Chief Justice was sworn in as acting president when the president, vice president, and speaker were absent on official duties outside the country. However, he asserted that the current government has intentionally prevented Speaker Bagbin from exercising this constitutional right.

The Deputy Minority Chief Whip further contrasted the treatment of Speaker Bagbin with that of Vice President Bawumia, implying that the latter has been afforded this opportunity due to his alignment with the president’s vision. He questioned Dr. Bawumia’s actions and responsibilities during Cabinet meetings when he served as Acting President, suggesting that he must have made decisions during those sessions.

“Dr. Bawumia cannot pretend not to have made any decision as acting president,” Mr. Ibrahim stated during the interview.

These allegations come amidst growing tensions between the government and the opposition, with the role of the Speaker of Parliament being a focal point of contention. As the political landscape continues to evolve in the run-up to the 2024 elections, Mr. Ibrahim’s accusations shed light on the complex dynamics at play within Ghana’s political sphere.

  • Kofi Bentil identifies Akufo-Addo as Bawumia’s biggest challenge

Kofi Bentil identifies Akufo-Addo as Bawumia’s biggest challenge

Senior Vice President of IMANI-Africa, Kofi Bentil, has identified Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s association with the outgoing government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as his primary challenge.

In a recent appearance on Joy FM’s Newsfile on Saturday, February 10, 2024, Bentil, a seasoned policy analyst, expressed his concerns about the impact of the current government’s performance on Dr. Bawumia’s electoral prospects. Despite acknowledging Dr. Bawumia’s potential, Bentil lamented the perceived shortcomings of the Akufo-Addo administration, describing it as “more corrupt than the Mahama government.”

Bentil’s remarks underscore a broader sentiment among some Ghanaian voters disillusioned with the performance of the current government. He emphasized that while he personally would not support a second term for the Akufo-Addo government, the constitutional mandate necessitates a change in leadership, thereby affording Dr. Bawumia the opportunity to distance himself from the perceived failures of the current administration.

However, Bentil’s stance on Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy is not without nuance. Despite his criticism of the current government, Bentil has been advocating for Ghanaians to give Dr. Bawumia a fair chance to prove himself as a potential leader. He argues that Dr. Bawumia, compared to former President John Dramani Mahama, offers a preferable alternative, citing his track record and potential for effective governance.

In a recent Facebook post, Bentil reiterated his support for Dr. Bawumia, emphasizing the need for fairness and objectivity in assessing his candidacy. He highlighted the inherent limitations of the vice president’s role in Ghanaian politics, likening it to that of an advisor and stressing the importance of distinguishing Dr. Bawumia from the outgoing government.

Looking ahead to the formation of a potential Bawumia-led administration, Bentil urged the vice president to avoid retaining key members of the current government in his team, pledging to hold him accountable if he fails to do so.

  • Pakistani final results indicate Khan-backed candidates are leading

Pakistani final results indicate Khan-backed candidates are leading

The latest news from Pakistan’s election shows that independent candidates supported by Imran Khan’s PTI party are winning.

Independents won 101 seats in the National Assembly. BBC found that 93 of the candidates who won the election were supported by PTI.

This means they have more seats than ex-PM Nawaz Sharif’s party, who won 75 seats. It is not clear who will be the next government.

As the argument continues, independent candidates who lost have filed many court cases accusing vote cheating.

Both the PTI and Mr. Sharif’s PMLN want to be the next government, even though PTI was not allowed to participate in the election.

The result was unexpected because people thought Mr Sharif’s party, which is backed by the powerful military, would win. They believed this because Mr Khan had been jailed for various charges and his party was not allowed to be on the ballot.

To be in charge, a candidate needs to have the support of at least 169 seats in the National Assembly.

Bilawal Bhutto from the PPP, which got the third most votes, said they haven’t talked to Imran Khan’s PTI or Nawaz Sharif’s PMLN. The PMLN said that Mr Bhutto’s father had a casual meeting with Mr Sharif’s brother in Lahore.

Out of the 366 seats in the National Assembly, 266 are chosen by voting and 70 are saved for specific groups – 60 for women and 10 for non-Muslims. These seats are given to parties based on how many seats they already have in the assembly.

According to Pakistan’s rules, independent candidates cannot get reserved seats in parliament.

On Sunday, the police stopped people from going on some streets near the electoral commission building in Rawalpindi to prevent expected protests. Also, the police in Islamabad said they would do something about the people protesting.

The leader of PTI asked people to protest peacefully outside the offices of the electoral commission because they were worried about fake election results.

On Saturday, Mr Sharif asked other parties to work with him to form a government together because he is popular with the military.

Experts say Pakistan might have a long time without stable politics.

Dr Farzana Shaikh from the Chatham House think tank told the BBC that it’s unlikely for the Khan-linked independent politicians to be allowed to lead the government. Many people are worried that any alliance between Mr. Sharif and the PPP could create a weak and unstable coalition.

Six PTI-supported candidates who did not win their seats are trying to overturn the results by taking legal action in the courts.

One of the candidates is Yasmin Rashid who competed against Mr. Sharif in Lahore. The people asking for something say that there was cheating in changing the election results on some papers.

Officials from Pakistan say that nothing wrong has happened.

Oppong Nkrumah misses out on Sports Minister position in Akufo-Addo’s purported reshuffle – Reports

Speculation is rife within political circles as rumors swirl about an imminent reshuffle in President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration, marking a potentially significant development since he took office in 2017.

Multiple media outlets have been abuzz with conjecture, suggesting that several key cabinet ministers may be in line for new portfolios, while others could be on the verge of departing from the government following the conclusion of the party’s parliamentary primaries.

A recent tweet by Muftawu Nabila Abdulai of Joy FM has added fuel to the fire, hinting at potential changes on the horizon. According to Abdulai’s tweet, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, initially slated to replace Mustapha Ussif as Sports Minister, has reportedly been earmarked for the Works and Housing Ministry role, introducing a new twist to the unfolding narrative.

Furthermore, there are indications that Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta might finally step down from his position, with Mohammed Amin rumored to be his potential successor. This speculation has garnered considerable attention, as Ofori-Atta has been a central figure in shaping Ghana’s economic policies in recent years.

In another notable development, Okoe Boye is said to be on the brink of assuming significant responsibilities within the Health Ministry, signaling potential shifts in key areas of governance.

Meanwhile, recent upheavals in local governance have added to the atmosphere of uncertainty, as 24 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) were abruptly sacked last week, with 26 others swiftly appointed to fill the vacated positions. This sudden administrative reshuffling has further fueled speculation about broader changes within the government’s ranks.

As the nation awaits official confirmation and clarity from the presidency, the swirling rumors and conjecture surrounding the potential cabinet reshuffle continue to dominate political discourse.

  • King Charles expresses gratitude to the public for their support after his cancer diagnosis

King Charles expresses gratitude to the public for their support after his cancer diagnosis

King Charles wants to thank everyone for their kind messages after finding out he has cancer. It’s the first time he’s said anything since the news came out.

The 75-year-old king said that kind thoughts are a great comfort and encouragement for those affected by cancer.

Buckingham Palace said on Monday that they found out about the illness.

The King has cancer and is staying at Sandringham for treatment.

He found out he had cancer while he was getting treatment for a bigger prostate in January. The Palace said that the kind of cancer the person has is not prostate cancer, but they did not say what kind it is.

In the thank you note, he wrote that he is happy to know that talking about his illness has helped people understand it better and has brought attention to the organizations that help cancer patients and their families in the UK and around the world.

“I have always admired their hard work and dedication even more, because I have experienced it myself. ”
The treatment for the king’s cancer.

The King is taking a break from his public duties while he gets treated for cancer. Other royal family members, like Queen Camilla and the Prince of Wales, will take over some of his responsibilities for now.

He left his house in London and went to his other house in Norfolk on Wednesday with the Queen. His younger son, the Duke of Sussex, had come from the US for a short visit earlier that day.

One of Queen Elizabeth II’s guiding principles was “I have to be seen to be believed. ” It means that people have to see something to believe it. The King won’t be appearing for a while because he has stopped doing his scheduled activities.

But people will still hear from him.

And according to the usually formal way that the Royals write, this is quite personal.

Not many people his age have decided to talk about their medical condition with the whole world. The King says he hopes that being open has helped someone.

And there’s more – this is a man who, like a lot of cancer patients, is now being cared for by doctors and nurses. Just like many other patients, he makes a special effort to praise the people who take care of him. He has encountered their work before, but it has never impacted him the way it does now.

The King’s thanks for all the messages of support are just what you’d expect from a royal. But even there, when a person meets with the king for diagnosis and treatment, it’s meaningful. He says the messages are very important.

The Queen said her husband was really moved by all the letters and messages they’ve been getting from people all over.

She spoke at a event at Salisbury Cathedral on Thursday. She said the support was very uplifting.

Prince William expressed his gratitude for the kind comments at a charity event for London’s Air Ambulance, which was also attended by Tom Cruise. He said the comments were very meaningful to everyone.

“He said the past few weeks have been mostly about health issues. ”

The King’s sister, the Princess Royal, said supportive words for the king and Catherine earlier this week. Anne went to a big rugby game on Saturday between Scotland and France. She was there because she supports Scottish Rugby.

God has a reason for creating me; burying my talent is a disservice to my family, nation, etc. – Opoku Onyinah reacts

Social media is abuzz with chatter surrounding Apostle Dr. Opoku Onyinah, former Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, following a recent post that has fueled speculation about his potential political aspirations.

The man of God has found himself thrust into the spotlight amid rumors linking him to the running mate position for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

While Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer, has yet to announce his running mate, Apostle Onyinah’s recent social media activity has added fuel to the speculation surrounding his potential entry into the political arena. In a post dated February 10, 2024, the apostle reflected on the importance of fulfilling one’s purpose in life, warning against the consequences of allowing talents to go to waste and the detrimental impact of remaining silent in the face of societal challenges.

“The Lord has a reason for creating me. Burying my talent and making it redundant is doing a disservice to my family, church, nation, and world,” wrote Apostle Onyinah on his Facebook page. “If I fail to speak, to work, to contribute, I allow the ‘bad’ minority to rule and dictate. Often, the silence of the majority or a good one helps the noisy minority destroy society or even rule. (From my script on Words of Wisdom).”

As speculation mounts over Dr. Bawumia’s choice for running mate, several names have been put forth, each accompanied by its own set of arguments and justifications. Among the frontrunners is Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, whose candidacy is bolstered by arguments of regional balance and the need to secure stronghold votes.

However, supporters of Apostle Onyinah are rallying behind his candidacy, citing religion as an additional factor that could boost the NPP’s ticket. With his esteemed status and background in the Christian community, many believe that Apostle Onyinah would serve as the perfect complement to Dr. Bawumia, who is Muslim.

Notably, Apostle Opoku Onyinah currently holds the position of Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Construction of Ghana’s controversial National Cathedral, adding another layer of intrigue to his potential political involvement.

As the nation eagerly awaits Dr. Bawumia’s announcement regarding his running mate, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on Apostle Onyinah, whose recent social media post has added a new dimension to the unfolding political narrative. With the 2024 presidential election drawing closer, all eyes are on the NPP’s flagbearer as he prepares to unveil his choice for the crucial role of running mate.
