Amazon founder Jeff Bezos sells shares for more than $4 billion

Jeff Bezos, a wealthy individual, sold off more of his stake in Amazon. He made over $4 billion in sales in the past few days.
The big technology company, which Mr. Bezos started in 1994, said he has sold 24 million Amazon stocks this month.

Mr Bezos, who is in charge of the company, sold some of his shares in Amazon last year.

Earlier this month, the company announced that it wants to sell 50 million shares in the next year. These shares are worth about $8. 4 billion at the current prices.

12 million shares were sold on Friday, and another 12 million shares were sold on Tuesday, as stated in a regulatory filing.

Mr Bezos has also donated some of his Amazon shares as part of his charitable giving, most recently in 2022.

Last year, Mr. Bezos moved from Seattle, Washington to Miami, Florida. Because of this, he will save about $280 million in taxes on the $4 billion worth of stock he sold.

Request for rich people to pay a minimum amount of tax.
The Los Angeles Times is going to let go of 20% of its employees.

If you make more than $250,000 from selling stocks or other investments that you’ve had for a long time, Washington state will tax you 7%. Florida does not take money from people’s earnings or profits from selling investments.

However, he still has to pay federal taxes because he sold the shares.

When Bezos said he was moving to Florida, people wondered if it was because he didn’t want to pay a new tax on selling stocks in Washington.

He sold his Amazon shares after they went up by almost 70% in the last year.

In November, Mr. Bezos said that his parents moved back to Miami where he spent part of his childhood. He wants to be near them and his space project, Blue Origin, which is moving more towards Cape Canaveral.

“He wrote on Instagram that he and his fiancée Lauren Sánchez love Miami. ”

“I’m planning to go back to Miami and leave the Pacific Northwest,” he said.

Mr Bezos owns the most of Amazon and is one of the richest people in the world, with a lot of money – over $190 billion.

  • India police once more target protesting farmers with tear gas

India police once more target protesting farmers with tear gas

The Indian police used tear gas again to stop farmers from marching to the capital Delhi. The farmers are asking for fair prices for their crops.

Most of the farmers are from Punjab state. They are currently 200km (125 miles) away from Delhi at the Shambhu border in Haryana state.

The city is surrounded by sharp wire, blocks of cement, and fences on three sides to stop people from getting in.

On Tuesday, the Haryana police used tear gas when farmers started moving barricades.

Later in the night, the leaders of the farm agreed to stop fighting for now and said they would continue their march in the morning.

On Wednesday morning, there were lots of police and soldiers near the Delhi borders to stop the protesters from getting through.

Farmers at the Shambhu border are giving out goggles to protesters because the police are using tear gas to stop their protest.

Farm leaders in the area had a meeting with reporters and said that they were shot with plastic and rubber bullets.

They also said the media is making it seem like the farmers are “terrorists” or working with other political parties during the protests.

“We don’t have any connection with anyone else,” said the farm leader Sarwan Singh Pandher to the reporters. “We have asked for the same things since the start. ”

Mr Pandher asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make a law for MSP.

Minimum support price (MSP) is the lowest price that government promises to pay to farmers for their crops at wholesale markets. The farmers want the government to keep its promise of increasing their income by two times.

Farmers leaders say that police have arrested at least twelve farmers since Tuesday, when the protest march started after two rounds of talks between farm unions and government ministers did not solve the problem.

Over 200 unions are joining the march, and the farmers want to get to the capital after going through Haryana.

On Tuesday, pictures from Ambala city, north of the capital, showed lots of tear gas in the air. At the Shambhu border, there was a fight between police and protesters as the protesters tried to break through the barricades. The police used drones to drop tear gas on the crowd.

Many people protesting got hurt when the police took action. The security officers got hurt from the stones thrown by the protesters.

Traffic was really bad in Delhi because the roads were closed and the usual routes were changed.

Before, Mr Pandher told the ANI news agency that about 10,000 people were at the Shambhu border. He called the attack on the farmers “shameful” and said that as farmers and laborers, they do not want any fights.

Farmers are a powerful group of voters in India, and experts believe that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government will try to keep them happy and not upset them.

“We want the government to hear what we want,” Mr. Pandher said before the march.

In 2020, farmers protested by sitting down for many months and blocking the highways that connect the capital to nearby states. Their protest lasted for a year and was a big problem for Mr Modi’s government. It made the authorities cancel the controversial agriculture reforms.

The court said the farmers have the right to move freely and supported the protesters.

India’s leaders from different political parties have shown their support for the farmers and criticized the government for trying to prevent them from going to Delhi.

Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge from the Congress party promised to make a law that ensures farmers get a fair price for their crops if their party wins the elections.

Oppong-Nkrumah takes over from Asenso Boakye as Works and Housing Minister

Information Minister, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah has been named the Works and Housing Minister in the latest reshuffle of government appointees under the Akufo-Addo administration.

This was contained in the statement released today, February 14, 2024, by the Presidency.

Oppong-Nkrumah if vetted and approved by Parliament will succeed MP for Bantama, Francis Asenso Boakye, who also has been moved from his outfit to the Roads and Highways Ministry.

President Akufo-Addo has further unveiled significant changes to his ministerial team in a major cabinet reshuffle, responding to growing calls for a shake-up.

A document issued by the Communications Directorate of the Jubilee House has revealed that the President “has relieved the following
Ministers and Deputy Ministers of their portfolios in government, with immediate effect.”

The Valentine’s Day ministerial shake-up sees the removal of the controversial Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, who has faced criticism from his party’s MPs, according to sources close to the presidency.

It is unclear why the President has made this decision but ministers who lost their parliamentary seats during the party’s primaries or did not contest in their constituencies have been replaced with new hands, primarily MPs.

This surprising decision, especially regarding Ofori-Atta’s prominent role in the government, has raised eyebrows among political observers.

Reported Key Appointments in the Reshuffle:

    1. Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover – New Greater Accra Regional Minister:
      • Titus-Glover replaces Henry Quartey, bringing extensive experience to bolster regional development efforts in the capital.
    2. Dr. Mohammed Adam Amin Anta – Minister of Finance Designate:
      • Dr. Adam Amin Anta, MP for Karaga, and Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, takes over from Ken Ofori-Atta. His technocratic background signals the government’s commitment to economic stability amid ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) discussions.
    3. Lydia Alhassan – New Sanitation and Water Resources Minister:
      • Lydia Alhassan, MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon, replaces Freda Prempeh. This move follows Prempeh’s loss in the parliamentary primary to Dr. Gideon Buoko.
    4. Andrew Agyepa Mercer – Minister of Tourism:
      • Mercer, currently the Deputy Minister of Energy and MP for Sekondi, is appointed as the Minister of Tourism. This strategic move aims to boost the tourism sector and attract more visitors to the country.
    5. Henry Quartey – Interior Minister Designate:
      • Henry Quartey, a respected figure in the government, is appointed as the Interior Minister Designate. His previous role as deputy at the same ministry adds to his suitability for maintaining internal security and safeguarding the nation’s borders.
    6. Ophelia Hayford Mensah – Minister for Environment Science, Technology, and Innovation:
      • Ophelia Hayford Mensah, MP for Mfantesman, replaces Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, bringing her expertise and passion for environmental conservation to address climate change and implement green initiatives.
    7. Other Appointments:
      • Ms. Fatimatu Abubakar becomes the substantive Information Minister.
      • Kojo Oppong Nkrumah moves to Works and Housing.
      • Francis Asenso Boakye takes over from Kwasi Amoako-Attah as Roads and Highways Minister.
    8. Deputy Ministers:

      • Prince Hamid Armah (Deputy Minister).
      • Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie (Deputy Minister).

This cabinet reshuffle is expected to generate both excitement and anticipation among Ghanaians as they await the implementation of new policies and initiatives under the reconfigured cabinet.

  • North Korea hacks South Korea president’s assistant’s emails

North Korea hacks South Korea president’s assistant’s emails

North Korea broke into the private email account of an assistant to the South Korean president, the president’s office told the BBC.

The breach happened before President Yoon Suk Yeol’s visit to the UK in November.

The employee’s personal email account was broken into after they used it for work, the president’s office said.

A news report in the local paper said that a very important government official claimed that hackers got into Mr. Yoon’s travel plans.

The Kukmin Ilbo newspaper said that the president’s messages had also been taken.

However, the president’s office did not share what information was taken.

This is believed to be the first time that the North has successfully broken into a member of the South Korean president’s team.

The president’s office said that their security system was not hacked.

“The security breach happened because a careless administrator broke the rules by using a commercial email for work,” a BBC report explained.

North Korea uses computer hacking to steal money and information, and they are getting better at it.

Pyongyang is facing strict international penalties, and its computer hackers are trying to steal lots of money, often in digital money, to support the government and its nuclear weapons plan.

It’s believed they have taken about $3 billion since 2016.

North Korea is believed to do computer hacking to steal secrets from other countries, like information about advanced weapons.

The South Korean government official, who did not want to be identified, told the Kukmin Ilbo newspaper that they were very surprised and upset when they found out about the breach. They said it could have been bad for Mr. Yoon’s safety in other countries.

President Yoon went to London for three days in November. He met King Charles and Queen Camilla, and also Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The South Korean government found out about the problem before the president left for his trip, and they did what was needed to fix it.

It said it had made its security stronger, by telling its team to be more careful, to stop another problem like this from happening.

  • Akufo-Addo’s Val’s day reshuffle a perfect gift to Ghanaians?

Akufo-Addo’s Val’s day reshuffle a perfect gift to Ghanaians?

President Akufo-Addo is expected to announce a reshuffle of some government appointees in his administration today, February 14, 2024.

Reports suggest that the reshuffle will see the departure of several government appointees, including Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, a figure whom many have called for removal from office on numerous occasions.

Ofori Atta, believed to be the President’s “darling boy,” has faced scrutiny and criticism from various quarters, with calls for his exit from government echoing across the country.

Finally, it seems that President Akufo-Addo is set to heed these calls, signaling a significant shake-up in his administration.

The anticipation surrounding the reshuffle has prompted many to ponder whether this move will be seen as a perfect gift for Ghanaians.

For those who have been vocal in their dissatisfaction with Ofori Atta’s performance, his removal from office could be viewed as a positive step towards addressing concerns about economic management and governance.

However, the reshuffle is expected to extend beyond just one individual, with other appointees also reportedly facing reassignment or removal from their positions.

Some substantive ministers will also be handed new portfolios while some deputies will also be handed substantive portfolios.

The major change will be the widely-reported exit of finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta who will be replaced according to insiders by his counterpart Mohammed Amin Adam, who till now was Minister of State at the Finance Ministry.

Full list of who heads where – according to Daily Guide source

Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover to be named Greater Accra Regional Minister. The current occupant of the role, Henry Quartey is heading to the Interior Ministry.

Interior Minister Ambrose Dery like Ofori-Atta is heading out, same with Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang Manu.

Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye will head to the Ministry of Health, meaning he is leaving the NHIA top job post

Lydia Alhassan, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon is heading to the Sanitation and Water Resources Ministry to replace Freda Prempeh.

Andrew Egyepa Mercer, currently the Deputy Minister of Energy and MP for Sekondi, will now serve as the Minister of Tourism. He replaces Dr. Mohammed Awal.

Ophelia Hayford Mensah, MP for Mfantesman is headed to the Ministry for Environment Science, Technology and Innovation, replacing Dr Kwaku Afriyie.

Francis Asenso Boakye leaves the Works and Housing Ministry to take over from Kwasi Amoako-Attah as Roads and Highways Minister.

Deputy Local Government Minister, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah will also remain at the Local Government Ministry but will be taking over from his boss, Dan Kwaku Botwe, MP for Okere.

Darkoa Newman, MP for Okaikoi South is heading to the Gender Ministry, replacing the defeated Walewale MP, Zuweira Lariba.

Abdul-Aziz Musah Ayaba, MP for Mion and Prince Hamid Armah, MP for Kwesimintim, and Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie, MP for Effiduase Asokore among other MPs shall be named Deputy Ministers.

Amidst speculation and anticipation, questions linger about the timing and motivations behind the reshuffle. Some believe the move is a strategic effort by President Akufo-Addo to rejuvenate his administration and bolster public confidence ahead of upcoming elections. Others also say it is a response to mounting pressure and criticism from various quarters.

Regardless of the interpretation, Ghanaians find themselves pondering whether President Akufo-Addo’s anticipated reshuffle will indeed be the perfect gift they have been waiting for.

Pakistan election: PML-N and PPP, Imran Khan’s opponents, agree to establish government

Nawaz Sharif and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s political parties in Pakistan have agreed to work together to create a government after the recent election.

Mr Bhutto’s political party, the Pakistan People’s Party, said it will support Mr. Sharif’s political party, the Pakistan Muslim League, in choosing a prime minister.

The two groups used to work together to remove Imran Khan from power in 2022. He is currently in prison.

This time, candidates who were not part of any political party but supported by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) won the most seats.

PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari said in a press conference that even though his party and the PML-N competed against each other in elections, they are now working together for the country’s benefit.

Mr Zardari said we don’t have to fight forever.

The PML-N said that both groups had agreed to work together for political stability.

The results showed that independent candidates supported by PTI won 93 out of 266 seats. This made voters unsure about which parties would make the next government.

PML-N got 75 seats and PPP got 54 seats.

Also, more seats will be given to parties from the 70 seats reserved for women and non-Muslims. Independent candidates cannot get these extra seats.

According to a PML-N official, Marriyum Aurangzeb, the leader of the party, Mr. Sharif, wants to choose his brother, Shehbaz, to be the prime minister. Both men were prime ministers before.

Mr Bhutto said his party will support PML-N to elect a prime minister, but he also said his party will not take any positions in the cabinet.

Imran Khan and his party think the elections were unfair and want to protest the results.

Talking to reporters in court for the first time since the vote, Khan said: “I want to caution against the mistake of forming a government with votes that were stolen. ”

“This type of theft will not only disrespect the people but also make the country’s economy even worse. ”

The officials say they did not tamper with the votes.

  • Ken Agyapong, Sly Tetteh, Afenyo Markin, others to have ‘reconciliation breakfast’ today

Ken Agyapong, Sly Tetteh, Afenyo Markin, others to have ‘reconciliation breakfast’ today

MP for Assin Central, Ken Agyapong and MP for Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfrom, Sylvester Tetteh, will cement their reconciliation with a breakfast meeting today, February 14, 2024, which also marks Valentine’s day.

This was disclosed by MP for Effutu constituency and the Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin, at the reconciliation meeting held on Tuesday following the clash between the two MPs.

The two were seen in a viral video on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, in a near scuffle in Parliament.

    Background

There was a tense encounter between Members of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong and Daniel Sly Tetteh, which nearly escalated into a physical altercation, yesterday, February 13, 2024, in Parliament.

The incident reportedly stemmed from Tetteh’s attempt to exchange pleasantries with Agyapong, during which he referred to the Assin Central MP as ‘Presido,’ a nickname purportedly coined in jest following Agyapong’s defeat in the NPP presidential primaries.

According to witnesses, Agyapong became infuriated by Tetteh’s use of the nickname, causing a heated exchange between the two parliamentarians. The term ‘Presido’ is said to be a playful moniker used by some MPs to tease Agyapong, but it appears that the veteran politician did not take kindly to Tetteh’s use of it, particularly given their reported godfather-godson relationship.

During the confrontation, Mr Agyapong reportedly demanded an amount of money owed to him by Mr Tetteh. However, the situation was calmed by the Deputy Minority Leader, who promptly whisked Mr Tetteh out of the scene, diffusing the tension.

Later, videos of both MPs smoking the peace pipe at a meeting with the Deputy Minority Leader emerged. It was at this meeting that Mr Afenyo Markin announced the reconciliation party.

Other prominent Members of Parliament within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) including the Deputy Minority Leader are expected to be at the ‘reconciliation breakfast’.

Russian landing ship Caesar Kunikov sank off coast of Crimea – Ukraine

A large Russian ship called the Caesar Kunikov has sunk near Crimea. Ukraine’s armed forces reported this.

There were loud explosions on Wednesday morning, as per local social media. They said that the ship was hit not far from Yalta town.

Ukraine has attacked Russia’s navy in Crimea several times.

Satellite pictures from last year showed that most of the ships had left the peninsula.

Ukraine’s intelligence agency said on a messaging app that they used Magura V5 naval drones in the attack.

Russia has been at war with Ukraine for almost three years. Ukraine’s military leader says the situation is very difficult.

Last week, Col Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi became the top commander. On Wednesday, he went to the front line after a Russian missile killed three people in Selydove.

Russia’s navy did not confirm that the Caesar Kunikov ship was sunk in the Black Sea. They only said they destroyed six Ukrainian drones. A video showing the aftermath of the Ukrainian attack was recently uploaded and verified by media.

Russian military bloggers acknowledged that their aircraft had been hit, but said that the crew had survived. The Russian military doesn’t often tell about big defeats and Russians listen to just a few popular bloggers for news.

The Caesar Kunikov was made at the end of the Soviet period. If it’s confirmed that the ship has sunk, it would be the second time a ship has been successfully hit in the Black Sea this month. A little ship called Ivanovets was attacked by drones about two weeks ago.

In December, the Novocherkassk, a Russian landing ship, was hit while parked in the port of Feodosiya.

‘Presidoo’ – What actually caused confrontation between Ken Agyapong and Sly Tetteh revealed

An unexpected verbal altercation ensued between Members of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong and Daniel Sly Tetteh on February 13, 2024.

According to reports, the catalyst for the confrontation was the use of the nickname ‘Presidoo’ by Sly Tetteh to refer to Kennedy Agyapong.

The incident, which occurred during an attempted exchange of pleasantries between the two parliamentarians, took a heated turn when Mr Tetteh reportedly addressed Agyapong as ‘Presidoo.’

This seemingly innocuous nickname, derived from ‘President,’ was intended as a playful jab, reportedly coined by some MPs to tease Mr Agyapong, particularly in light of his defeat in the NPP presidential primaries.

However, Agyapong’s reaction to being referred to as ‘Presidoo’ was far from jovial, as witnesses described him becoming visibly agitated by Tetteh’s use of the nickname. The situation reportedly escalated when Agyapong demanded an amount of money owed to him by Tetteh, adding another layer of tension to the encounter.

Fortunately, the Deputy Minority Leader intervened swiftly, defusing the confrontation by promptly removing Tetteh from the scene. This intervention prevented the situation from escalating further and helped restore a sense of calm.

Later, both parties reconciled in a meeting with the Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Israel Gaza: UN fears Rafah attack could result in “slaughter”

A high-ranking UN official has said that if Israel attacks Rafah, the southernmost city in Gaza, a lot of people could be killed.

Humanitarian leader Martin Griffiths said that the people in Gaza are going through a really harsh and intense attack.

He said that if Rafah is invaded, the results would be really bad.

The leader of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, has promised to beat the Hamas fighters who he says are hiding in the city.

In a very strong statement, Mr. Griffiths said that over a million people are crowded in Rafah and are facing the threat of death. He said people in the city don’t have much food or medicine and have no safe place to go.

He said if Israel invades the city, it will make the humanitarian operation even more difficult.

A person who speaks for the leader of the United Nations said to the BBC that the UN has not gotten any plans from Israel to move people out of Rafah, and the UN won’t help with any evacuations that are not voluntary.

Stephane Dujarric said: “The United Nations will not be part of making people leave their homes without wanting to. ”

Rafah is a little town in the southern part of the Gaza Strip near the border with Egypt. Before the war, about 250,000 people lived there. But now, because Israel told people to go south, the population has grown to around 1. 5

A lot of people are living in tents and they are in bad conditions. They have no place to go.

Mr Griffiths also said that people helping others in Gaza have been shot, threatened with guns, attacked, and killed because there is no law and order.

He said this while Israel and Hamas in Gaza were trying to talk and agree to stop fighting.

Top leaders from the US, Israel, Egypt, and Qatar met on Tuesday. They discussed the situation in Rafah and urged Israel not to invade.

Mr Guterres said he wanted the talks to be successful in order to prevent an attack by Israel on the city.

But later statements from the Egyptian government said that there was no progress made in the meeting.

It was said that the meeting showed how dangerous it is to increase military actions in Rafah in southern Gaza and how it could lead to very bad results. But they didn’t say if they made any progress towards peace.

Joe Biden, the President of the United States, told Israel to make sure that the people who are not in the army are safe. UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron told Israel to “stop and think carefully” before attacking Rafah.

Around 1,200 people died in attacks in Israel by gunmen led by Hamas on October 7th last year.

Israel started a war in the Gaza Strip. The war has caused the death of over 28,400 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and more than 68,000 have been injured, according to the health ministry run by Hamas.

Rafah was heavily bombed by the Israeli military recently. At least 67 people were killed there on Monday, according to the health ministry run by Hamas.

  • Alejandro Mayorkas: House of Representatives votes to remove secretary of homeland security

Alejandro Mayorkas: House of Representatives votes to remove secretary of homeland security

The House of Representatives has decided to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas by a very small margin. This makes him the first cabinet member to face impeachment in almost 150 years.

Many Republicans think Mr Mayorkas is responsible for a lot of migrants coming to the US from Mexico.

The Republicans voted 214 to 213 in favor of the measure, after it didn’t pass last week.

The problem will now go to the Senate, where the Democrats are in charge, and it will probably not pass.

President Joe Biden said that the vote was a clear and unfair decision made by one political party and a move meant to gain attention.

Critics said Mr. Mayorkas did not keep his promise to do his job well and faithfully because he did not work enough to make the border safer.

Most Democrats and a few Republicans voted against impeachment.

The three people who left their group also voted no on the first try to remove Mr. Mayorkas from his job. They said that taking him out of his job for something not very serious would make the punishment in the constitution weaker and wouldn’t help with the border problem.

Over 63 million people came to the US without permission since 2021. This has made immigration a big problem for politicians before the election in November.

Donald Trump is really focusing on this problem in his campaign to remove Mr. Biden from his job.

After the vote, Mr. Biden said Mr. Mayorkas is a good public servant.

The president said he has followed the law and showed a strong dedication to our country’s important values.

Mia Ehrenberg, who speaks for the Department of Homeland Security, said that Republicans are not focused on solving the big problems at our border. Instead, she said they are focused on going against the constitution.

Republican leader Mike Johnson said that he thinks Mr. Mayorkas should be removed from his job.

In January, Republicans accused Mr Mayorkas of not doing his job in enforcing immigration rules and lying about the safety of the border.

Democrat Al Green from Texas came to vote against impeachment while wearing hospital clothes, surprising everyone. He was in the hospital getting surgery.

House leader Steve Scalise voted after missing last vote due to cancer treatment. His coming back helped the Republicans get enough votes to win.

Impeachment is the first step in removing a government official for doing something really bad. It’s in the US Constitution.

It needs more than half of the House to agree, then the Senate has a trial.

We need at least two out of three people to agree for it to work.

The impeachment probably won’t happen because the Democrats only have a small majority in the Senate.

The House will give the Senate the impeachment articles on 26 February.

The last cabinet secretary to be impeached was Secretary of War William Belknap in 1876. He resigned just before the vote.

In a poll done in January by CBS, nearly half of Americans said they think the situation at the border is a crisis. 63% of people said they want stricter border policies.

The US agency in charge of protecting the border said that fewer people crossed the border in January. They think this happened because of the usual patterns at that time of year and because they have been working harder to enforce the rules.

  • Anti-LGBTQ+ bill expected to be passed by Friday – Minority Leader reveals

Anti-LGBTQ+ bill expected to be passed by Friday – Minority Leader reveals

Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has disclosed that Ghana’s highly contentious Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill is set to be passed by Friday, February 16. This legislation aims to prohibit activities related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals within the country.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, Dr Forson emphasized that the bill has undergone rigorous scrutiny and is currently undergoing final checks to ensure that all proposed amendments approved by Parliament are accurately incorporated.

He outlined the procedural timeline, stating that by Wednesday, the bill’s review process will be completed, with the Speaker expected to pose the question for Members of Parliament (MPs) to cast their votes by Thursday.

“By the weekend, Ghana should have a bill called the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill,” Dr Forson affirmed.

Responding to concerns about potential international backlash, Dr Forson asserted that the people of Ghana are overwhelmingly in favor of the bill’s passage. He noted surprising unanimity among MPs during the Speaker’s inquiry, with no significant opposition voiced.

Highlighting the protracted nature of the debate, Dr. Forson underscored that the bill’s details have been under parliamentary consideration since 2021. Despite extended deliberations, he remains confident in widespread support for the legislation.

“It has been here for three years, and we’re still debating it. We’ve finished the consideration, what is left is the third reading, and after that, the speaker will put the question,” he stated.

Dr. Forson expressed certainty that the bill would eventually become law, even if President Akufo-Addo were to exercise his discretion not to approve it. He explained that Parliament could use a two-thirds majority to override a presidential veto.

“So as it stands now, I think the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill will become law even if the President fails to [willingly] sign it,” Dr. Forson concluded.

The impending passage of this bill reflects ongoing debates surrounding LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana and the government’s stance on these issues. As the legislation moves closer to enactment, it is likely to spark further discussion and scrutiny both domestically and internationally.

  • Biden calls Trump’s criticism of NATO “shameful”

Biden calls Trump’s criticism of NATO “shameful”

Joe Biden, the President, is very unhappy with Donald Trump’s negative comments about Nato. He thinks they are not smart, and they make America look bad.

The Democrat criticized Mr. Trump for saying he would “support” Russia in attacking any Nato member that doesn’t spend enough on defense.

Mr Biden said that the comments show the importance of quickly passing a $95 billion foreign aid package for US allies.

The Senate approved the bill, but it may have trouble getting approved in the House because of political issues.

Mr Biden said at the White House on Tuesday that not passing the package, which includes $60 billion for Ukraine, would help Putin.

He said things have become more serious because of Mr. Trump’s “dangerous” comments over the weekend.

Mr Biden said that no president before has ever shown respect to a Russian leader.

“Let me make this really simple. ” I won’t Please, for the love of God. It’s stupid It’s embarrassing It’s not safe. “It’s not American. ”

At a gathering in South Carolina, Mr. Trump, a member of the Republican party, complained about late payments from Nato members.

He talked about a previous discussion he had with the leader of a large country about a possible attack from Russia.

Mr Trump said that the official wanted to know if the US would protect a NATO member that didn’t pay its fair share.

Mr Trump told the people, “I said, ‘You didn’t pay. You’re late on your payments. ‘” “No, I won’t keep you safe. I’d even tell them to do whatever they like. ” “You have to give money. ”

Mr Biden said the previous leader was using the military alliance to bully and control others.

“I will protect all of Nato’s land if President, even if Putin attacks. ”

Mr Biden said that the only time Nato has used Article 5 of its charter was after the 9/11 attacks on the US. This article says that if one member of Nato is attacked, all members need to defend them.

The president asked House Republicans if they will support Ukraine or Putin. He also asked if they will support America or Trump.

Nato will say on Wednesday that 18 out of 31 members are meeting their goal of spending 2% of their country’s money on defense.

Out of all the countries in Nato, only Poland spends a larger portion of its money on defense compared to the US.

In 2016, only five countries in Nato reached the same goal. Trump criticized this and said the US might leave the alliance.

The argument between Mr Biden and Mr Trump about Ukraine aid and US-Nato relations shows a big difference in their ideas for the future election.

Mr Biden often talks about how the US is a big part of a long-lasting global disagreement between countries that have democracy and countries that are ruled by one person or a small group.

He thinks that Ukraine is an important battleground in this conflict, and European allies in Nato and the EU are important partners.

For four years, President Trump often didn’t think global alliances were important for the US. He preferred dealing directly with other countries and their leaders, and prioritized America above all else.

If Nato and other countries that are friends with the US do not benefit America, he is okay with the idea that they can be replaced.

The Senate approved a package with $60 billion for Ukraine, $8 billion for Taiwan and other US allies in Asia, $14 billion for Israel’s fight against Hamas, and $10 billion for helping people in conflict areas like Gaza.

22 Republican senators agreed with it, but many conservative lawmakers didn’t like it because they want the government to focus on the increasing number of migrants at the southern US border before sending more money to other countries.

An earlier effort to pass a $118 billion aid package with border security rules failed because President Trump didn’t like it.

  • Ofori-Atta, other prominent ministers axed out of govt in Akufo-Addo’s Val’s day reshuffle

Ofori-Atta, other prominent ministers axed out of govt in Akufo-Addo’s Val’s day reshuffle

President Akufo-Addo is expected to unveil a significant cabinet reshuffle, marking a pivotal moment in the administration’s governance strategy. The shake-up comes amidst mounting calls for change and aims to reinvigorate the government ahead of the upcoming December election.

Reports suggest that the new ministers are already in line to meet with the President at the Jubilee House for briefings, with an official announcement expected tomorrow, Wednesday, February 14, 2024.

One of the headline changes in this Valentine’s Day ministerial shuffle is the replacement of the controversial Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta. Ofori-Atta, who has faced criticism from within his party’s ranks, is set to be replaced by Dr. Mohammed Adam Amin Anta, MP for Karaga and a seasoned technocrat with extensive experience in the financial sector.

Another notable appointment is that of Lydia Alhassan, Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, who will take over as the new Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources. She replaces Freda Prempeh and is tasked with addressing key challenges in sanitation and water provision, previously overseen by Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

The reshuffle also includes Andrew Agyepa Mercer, the Deputy Minister of Energy and MP for Sekondi, who will assume the role of Minister of Tourism. Mercer’s appointment is seen as a positive step towards promoting Ghana as a top tourist destination and boosting the tourism sector.

Henry Quartey, a respected figure in the government, has been designated as the Interior Minister Designate, responsible for maintaining internal security and safeguarding the nation’s borders. He replaces Ambrose Dery, who decided not to stand for re-election.

Other key appointments include Ophelia Hayford Mensah as the Minister for Environment Science, Technology, and Innovation, Fatimatu Abubakar as the Information Minister, and Francis Asenso Boakye as the Roads and Highways Minister.

The reshuffle reflects President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to ensuring efficient governance and addressing the evolving needs of the nation. By bringing in fresh perspectives and expertise, the new cabinet members are expected to contribute to the government’s agenda for progress and prosperity.

As Ghanaians eagerly anticipate the implementation of new policies and initiatives under the reconfigured cabinet, the reshuffle is poised to generate both excitement and anticipation across the country.

  • We didn’t promise a perfect Ghana – Oppong-Nkrumah

    We didn’t promise a perfect Ghana – Oppong-Nkrumah

Minister for Information Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah has clarified that the Akufo-Addo government did not promise to create a perfect Ghana but rather pledged to improve the country’s fortunes.

He emphasized that the concept of perfection was not part of the NPP’s manifesto. Despite the ongoing challenges, he highlighted the government’s progress in stabilizing the economy compared to the previous administration.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Citi TV, Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah is said to have acknowledged that while significant progress has been made, many Ghanaians still face difficulties.

“We are not in a perfect place, but we have made significant progress from where we started in January 2017. We have also made significant progress on the promises and commitments that we made. And we have made significant progress as compared to our peers [NDC].

“If inflation drops from 50-something per cent to 20-something per cent. What it means is that year to date, the prices of goods and services in the inflationary basket are going up to about 20 per cent, which is still difficult for a lot of people.

He continued, “If you look at the trend and where we have come from, then you can then make the point that we are making progress. Yes, we are not in a perfect place, but we are making progress. We must consolidate and grow on this path. I didn’t see perfection in the NPP manifesto, perfection was not in the manifesto. Perfection, I’m not sure, that was promised.”

The Minister for Information also assured that the government would build upon unfulfilled promises.

“There were some specific promises that were made, a good number of them have been achieved, but some of them have not been achieved. Life is continual, and we will build on those,” Oppong-Nkrumah assured.

  • 1.1m unregistered AK47s, pump-action guns, other weapons circulating in Ghana – Small Arms Commission

1.1m unregistered AK47s, pump-action guns, other weapons circulating in Ghana – Small Arms Commission

The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons has raised alarm over the alarming number of untraceable small arms and light weapons circulating in Ghana, posing a significant threat to national security.

According to the commission, out of the total 2.3 million small arms and light weapons currently in circulation, over 1.1 million cannot be adequately tracked or monitored.

Speaking at a regional conference addressing the humanitarian impact of improvised anti-personnel mines, Frank Boateng Asumani, the Head of the National Arms Marking Programme at the Commission, highlighted the urgency of addressing the proliferation of these unaccounted weapons.

He disclosed that efforts are underway to curb their circulation and enhance security measures.

“Presently, there are 2.3 million small and light weapons in circulation, with only 1.2 million being legally registered. The remaining 1.1 million are unaccounted for, prompting the commission to seek funding to assess the extent of proliferation within the system. These include AK47s, pistols, pump-action guns, and locally manufactured firearms,” stated Asumani.

The revelation underscores the need for robust measures to address illegal arms trafficking and strengthen monitoring mechanisms to prevent these weapons from falling into the wrong hands.

The unchecked proliferation of small arms and light weapons poses a grave threat to public safety and stability, as they can fuel armed conflicts, criminal activities, and undermine peace and security efforts.

In response to the growing concerns, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has urged nations, including Libya, Egypt, and Morocco, to prioritize ratifying the convention banning anti-personnel mines.

Dr Bawumia emphasized the importance of preventing the humanitarian consequences associated with these weapons, underscoring the need for international cooperation to address shared security challenges.

The Ghanaian government, in collaboration with regional and international partners, is expected to intensify efforts to combat illicit arms trafficking, enhance border security, and strengthen legal frameworks to regulate the possession and transfer of firearms.

Such initiatives are crucial to safeguarding national security and promoting peace and stability in the region.

  • Adongo’s lecture in response to Bawumia’s vision abruptly cancelled due to venue withdrawal

Adongo’s lecture in response to Bawumia’s vision abruptly cancelled due to venue withdrawal

The highly anticipated lecture by Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, aimed at responding to the 70-point vision presented by Vice President and NPP Flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been abruptly canceled.

This cancellation comes following the withdrawal of permission by the managers of the Chartered Institute of Bankers to host the event under the auspices of the Coalition For Restoration (CFR).

According to CFR, Isaac Adongo, the ranking member of the finance committee, was slated to utilize the occasion to address what the coalition described as factual inaccuracies in the Vice President’s presentation.

However, in a statement released to announce the cancellation, CFR cited the sudden reversal of permission by the venue managers, who raised concerns about the political implications of hosting the event.

The statement issued by CFR reads, “The Coalition For Restoration, CFR had earlier advertised its intention to present Hon Isaac Adongo, MP for Bolgatanga Central and Ranking member of the finance committee of Parliament in a public lecture to respond to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, vice president and presidential candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

However, due to circumstances beyond our control, the lecture cannot be delivered as advertised on the said date.”

Explaining the situation further, CFR stated, “The cancellation has been occasioned by the decision of the managers of the venue to reverse their decision to permit us usage of the venue. For the purpose of clarity, managers of the Chartered Institute of Bankers called this morning to inform us that they were canceling our bookings for the venue. They explained that their policy frowns on politics.”

The group expressed shock at the sudden turn of events, as they had previously notified the venue managers about Isaac Adongo’s participation in the event without any objections. CFR also apologized for any disappointment caused by the cancellation, noting that payment for the venue had already been made and receipts issued.

“At the time of booking for the venue, we made it clear that it was going to be an economic lecture where at least one of the speakers is a politician belonging to the NDC. We further assured them that we were not going to wear party shirts for attendance. We subsequently made full payment for the venue and got a receipt for it. But, things probably changed after our flyers/posters went viral advertising Hon. Isaac Adongo as the main speaker. We were called on the phone this morning to tell us that our booking has been canceled.”

The cancellation has left many eagerly awaiting the lecture disappointed, raising concerns about the challenges of hosting politically oriented events in certain venues.

Dean of University of Ghana School of Law calls for an overhaul of outdated banking laws

Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, Professor Raymond Akongburo Atuguba, has raised concerns regarding the outdated nature of many of Ghana’s laws, particularly within the banking sector. This is according to a report by graphic.com.gh.

During the GCB Platinum Thought Leadership Conference in Accra, Professor Atuguba expressed worry that Ghana’s legal framework hampers adherence to ethical principles due to its lack of alignment with contemporary times.

“Our laws are not in tune with the times; how do you determine ethics with such a legal framework?” Professor Atuguba questioned.

He highlighted that Ghana still upholds approximately 10 English laws in its statutes, which were passed between 1539 and 1863.

Given the significant advancements since the enactment of these laws, he emphasized the urgent need for new legislation to reflect current trends, a step that has not been adequately pursued.

In his presentation titled “Ethics, financial conduct, and the political economy in Ghana and other emerging markets,” Professor Atuguba defined ethics as an extension of the law. He pointed out that this makes it challenging for individuals to comply with ethical principles governing businesses within the current legal framework.

The conference, attended by bankers and subject matter experts from the finance and economics fields, covered various topics within the banking and finance sectors.

Notable attendees included the President of the Council of Foreign Relations Ghana, Ambassador D. K. Osei; former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey; Head of the Economics Department at the University of Ghana, Prof. William Baah-Boateng; and former Country Senior Partner of PwC Ghana, Felix Addo.

Professor Atuguba cited examples such as the Public Procurement Act, 2003 (ACT 663), which he deemed costly to obey, surpassing the benefits it aims to bring. He also highlighted the Supreme Court’s intervention in declaring portions of the Companies Act, 2019 (ACT 992), unconstitutional.

  • Haruna Iddrisu calls for state of emergency in Tamale over water shortages

Haruna Iddrisu calls for state of emergency in Tamale over water shortages

Tamale South MP, Haruna Iddrisu, has called for urgent government intervention in the Tamale Metropolis, where residents have been grappling with severe water shortages for the past two years.

Addressing Parliament, Iddrisu emphasized the dire nature of the situation, attributing it to abandoned water projects that have exacerbated the crisis.

Water scarcity has reached critical levels in parts of the Tamale Metropolis, with residents enduring months without access to clean water.

Compounded by the drying up of water bodies during the harmattan season, the situation has forced many to resort to unclean water sources for survival.

Residents, who cannot recall the last time water flowed from their taps, now rely on murky water from hand-dugout pits behind the Zoomlion Company Limited offices on the Zujung cemetery road. Dubbed “mapuka pits” by locals, this makeshift water source has become the primary source of water for residents since the rains ceased.

During a session in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu emphasized the severity of the water shortage situation, advocating for a declaration of a state of emergency to facilitate government intervention with necessary funds.

Additionally, Sampson Ahi, the MP for Bodi and former deputy Minister for Works and Housing, urged fellow MPs to rally support from the government, drawing parallels to the proactive measures taken by the Mahama administration in addressing similar challenges in their communities during their tenure.

First female minister of defence appointed to Liberia

Liberia’s President Joseph Boakai has chosen a retired female brigadier general, Geraldine George, to be the temporary head of the defense department. This decision came after the wives of soldiers protested and caused the previous minister to step down.

This is the first time a woman is doing this job, but we don’t know why Mrs. George is only doing it temporarily.

She joined the army in 2006 while it was being rebuilt after a civil war and became part of the best troops. She has been the second-in-command of the staff for the past six years.

After Mr Boakai became president on 22 January, he chose her to be the deputy in charge of administration in the defense ministry.

She got a promotion because the Defense Minister, Prince Charles Johnson III, quit his job after protests from soldiers’ wives on Monday.

The senate in Liberia approved his appointment last week, but he had to quit because of the protests.

The woman said that because he used to be in charge of the armed forces, he should be blamed for the military not getting enough money and having bad living conditions.

The women put roadblocks in Monrovia and other parts of the country, so Mr. Boakai had to cancel the National Army Day celebrations on Monday.

Mr Boakai became the new leader by winning a very close election against the current leader, George Weah, last November. Neither of them won enough votes in the first round, so they had a second election to decide the winner.

SSNIT extends GHS1m support to National Pensioners Association for healthcare needs

Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of retirees by presenting a cheque of GHS1 million to the National Pensioners Association (NPA).

The donation, aimed at supporting the healthcare needs of pensioners enrolled in the NPA’s Pensioners Medical Scheme (PMS), underscores SSNIT’s dedication to prioritizing the well-being of pensioners nationwide.

This contribution marks a continuation of SSNIT’s ongoing support for the NPA. Since 2017, SSNIT has consistently demonstrated its commitment to the welfare of pensioners under the SSNIT Scheme.

Previous donations include amounts of GHS300,000.00 in 2018 and GHS500,000.00 in 2019 to bolster the Pensioners Medical Scheme. Additionally, in 2021, the NPA received a brand new Toyota Hilux double cabin pickup vehicle from SSNIT to address transportation challenges faced by its members.

Speaking at a ceremony held at the SSNIT Pension House in Accra, Dr John Ofori-Tenkorang, the Director-General of SSNIT, reiterated the Trust’s unwavering support for the activities and welfare of the NPA. Dr Ofori-Tenkorang emphasized SSNIT’s commitment to fulfilling its social responsibility towards retirees who have contributed to the nation’s workforce during their active years.

“The value SSNIT places on pensioners has guided and helped the Trust to strengthen the relationship that exists between SSNIT and the NPA over the past years,” stated Dr. Ofori-Tenkorang. He further assured pensioners that SSNIT would continue to extend support whenever possible to enhance their quality of life.

Mr. Stephen Boakye, the General Secretary of the NPA, expressed gratitude to SSNIT for its continuous support of the Pensioners Medical Scheme. He commended the cordial relationship between the NPA and SSNIT, particularly under the current management of SSNIT, and assured that the funds would be utilized for their intended purpose.

One beneficiary, Confidence Kofi Adjayi, lauded the supportive role of the Pensioner Medical Scheme in his healthcare journey. He highlighted how the Scheme has consistently covered his medical expenses, particularly for eye care, providing invaluable support to retirees in need.

SSNIT’s latest donation to the NPA underscores its commitment to ensuring the well-being of pensioners and further strengthens the bond between SSNIT and the retiree community.

  • US Senate approves a $95 billion aid package for US, Israel, and Ukraine

US Senate approves a $95 billion aid package for US, Israel, and Ukraine

The US Senate has finally agreed to give $95 billion in aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan after arguing about it for a long time.

The Democrats wanted to pass the bill, but the Republicans couldn’t agree and had voted against it before.

The package has $60 billion for Kyiv, $14 billion for Israel’s fight against Hamas, and $10 billion for help in places where there is war, like Gaza.

The bill will now go to the House, where we don’t know what will happen to it.

The package passed the Senate even though some Republicans, like House Speaker Mike Johnson and former President Donald Trump, criticized it. It also includes over $4bn for Indo-Pacific allies.

Lawmakers said yes to the package with a vote of 70 to 29. In the end, 22 Republicans and most of the Democrats voted for the law, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

“MrMcConnell said that history will make things clear,” in a statement after the vote. “Today, history will remember that the Senate did not waver in its belief in the importance of American leadership and strength. ”

The president of Ukraine thanked the senators for passing it.

“In Ukraine, the help we get from the US keeps people safe from Russian attacks and saves lives. ” This means that life will keep going in our cities and will win over war. This was written by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky on X, also known as Twitter.

The vote happened after the Senate stayed up all night and some Republicans made speeches against the measure.

The group of right-wing Republicans led by Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky promised to delay the process, so it took a long time to think about the bill.

“Shouldn’t we focus on fixing our own country before anything else. ” he said in a long speech to delay the bill from being passed.

Some lawmakers who want positive change, like Jeff Merkley from Oregon and Bernie Sanders from Vermont, voted against the bill because they are worried about supporting Israel’s bombing of Gaza.

The aid package is a smaller version of a $118 billion package that Senate Republicans rejected last week.

Republicans first wanted to make sure that any help given to other countries was connected to making the southern border more secure. However, after Mr. Trump opposed the plan, Republicans could not agree on whether to support it.

Some lawmakers want to put border security back into the current version of the law.

MrJ ohnson said on Monday night that the Republican-controlled House wouldn’t approve the new bill without those rules.

“The Republicans in the House said right away that any national security law must focus on our border security,” he said.

Mr Johnson said that the lawmakers need to start over and work on the law to make sure the border is secure.

Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer, who leads the majority in the Senate, praised the approval of the bill on Tuesday. He said the Senate was warning Putin that he will be sorry for doubting America’s determination.

The US gives a lot of help to Ukraine. The White House requested Congress to pass a bill with foreign aid a few months ago.

This might be the last chance for Congress to give Ukraine help. Ukraine says it might not be able to fight off Russia without support from the United States.

Negotiations for Gaza cease-fire coincide with gunfire in Rafah

Talks to stop the fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza have started again in Cairo, according to Egyptian news.

High-ranking leaders from the US, Israel, Egypt, and Qatar are having a meeting because there is a lot of pressure from different countries for Israel to stop bombing the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

Around 15 million people are crowded into this little town near the border, and there are worries that Israel might send in troops.

The leader of Israel said no to the ceasefire idea from Hamas and called it “delusional” last week.

Benjamin Netanyahu said it was possible to completely win in Gaza in a few months.

Later, he told Israeli soldiers to get ready to go into more areas on the ground, and promised to win against Hamas fighters who are hiding in Rafah.

But the UN human rights chief Volker Türk said that any attack would be very frightening and many innocent people would probably be killed.

US President Joe Biden wants to keep people in the area safe.

Rafah has been hit by a lot of bombings from Israel in the past few days, and there have been reports of people being killed and hurt.

The talks in Cairo are still happening even though Israel has said no to what Hamas wants.

The leader of the US Central Intelligence Agency William Burns, Israeli intelligence chief David Barnea, Egyptian intelligence officials, and Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani are working together.

Reuters reported that people who know about the talks said they are planning to use a three-step plan to release the rest of the Israeli hostages and have a longer break from fighting.

Qatar and Egypt, with help from the US, have been trying to make a deal between Israel and Hamas.

Israel has not been able to find 134 of the 253 people who were taken by Hamas-led gunmen during the attacks on southern Israel on 7 October. Some people who were held captive have been let go, including two men from Israel and Argentina. Unfortunately, some people did not survive the situation.

At least 1,200 people died in the attacks led by Hamas.

Israel started fighting in the Gaza Strip because of what they did. About 28,473 Palestinians have died and over 68,000 have been injured in Gaza since 7 October, according to the health ministry run by Hamas.

Over half of the 2. 3 million people in Gaza are now living in Rafah, which used to have only 250,000 people before the war between Israel and Hamas.

Many of the homeless people are living in temporary shelters or tents in dirty conditions, with little access to clean water or food.

Many countries and groups have told Israel not to start its planned attack, along with the US.

The UK Foreign Secretary, David Cameron, said that Israel should think carefully before doing anything else in Rafah.

Josep Borrell, who is in charge of the EU’s foreign policy, asked countries that support Israel to stop giving them weapons because a lot of people are being killed in Gaza.

Last week, Saudi Arabia said there would be big problems if Rafah was attacked.

  • Senegal prepares for more protests over election dispute

Senegal prepares for more protests over election dispute

Senegalese organizations are planning to hold peaceful demonstrations on Tuesday in response to the postponement of the presidential election.

The Aar Sunu Election, a new group of about 40 organizations, said the protests will begin at 3 PM. They want to protect our election.

The people in charge of the protest, including groups that oppose the government, have asked everyone to come out in big groups even though the police said no.

Cherif Mouhamadou Blondin Ndiaye, the leader of Dakar, stopped the march because he thought it could cause trouble and make it hard for people and things to move around freely.

Three people died and many were arrested in protests last week because the election was postponed. The opposition called it a “constitutional coup”.

President Macky Sall changed the date of the vote to 25 February suddenly. He did this because there was a disagreement about who could run for president.

  • Kenya contests renowned news anchor’s murder conviction

Kenya contests renowned news anchor’s murder conviction

The Kenyan state prosecutor is not happy with the decision to let a famous TV presenter go free in a murder case, so they want to appeal the decision.

Jacque Maribe and her former fiancé Joseph Irungu, also known as “Jowie”, were said to have killed businesswoman Monica Kimani at her house in Nairobi in 2018.

Ms Kimani was discovered by her family tied up in a bathtub after they couldn’t get in touch with her.

Last Friday, the Kenyan High Court said Ms Maribe is not guilty, but said Irungu is guilty of the murder.

Judge Grace Nzioka from the High Court said that the prosecution did not charge Ms Maribe with the right things and there is no proof that she was at Ms Kimani’s home when she was killed.

The DPP’s office wants to appeal the decision of the High Court because they are not happy with the defendant being found not guilty.

The trial of the person who killed Ms. Kimani from South Sudan is getting a lot of attention in Kenya, even though it’s not clear why she was killed.

  • Woman killed amid attack on Joel Osteen Texas megachurch

Woman killed amid attack on Joel Osteen Texas megachurch

A lady wearing a long coat and holding a child started shooting in a busy Texas megachurch. Security shot her to stop the attack.

Police identified a woman named Genesse Ivonne Moreno, 36, as the suspect. She was with her seven-year-old son, who was badly hurt in the shootout in Houston.

Investigators said the person who attacked had the word “Palestine” on their rifle and they also found writings that were against Jewish people.

But they don’t know why it happened.

A 57-year-old man got shot in the hip, but he’s out of the hospital now.

The shooter’s son was shot in the head during the gun fight, and he is now in critical condition. It is not known who shot the boy.

The church was having a live video service when the first shots were heard. Pastor Jorge Basave kept recording and told the Houston Chronicle that he wanted to stay calm.

“He said he was afraid that other people would also become scared because of his fear. ”

The police said the person used a specific type of gun for the attack. She had a small rifle, but she didn’t use it.

At the news conference on Monday, officials said that the person who attacked has had mental health problems in the past and was ordered to get help in 2016.

Official documents show that Moreno has been arrested many times and has been found guilty of hurting people, doing illegal drugs, and having weapons.

She used different names before, like Jeffery Escalante, and in official records, she is sometimes listed as a man and sometimes as a woman. Police said in a news conference that she is a Hispanic woman.

Police think she had an argument with her ex-husband’s family, who are Jewish.

The shooting happened at Lakewood Church, which is a big church led by famous TV preacher Joel Osteen.

Moreno’s relationship with the church is still being looked into, but the local TV station KHOU says her mother went to Lakewood.

The store also mentioned that people who work at the church might have been asked questions during Moreno’s difficult divorce and child custody case, according to records from Montgomery County court.

The police said the person they think did it drove up to the west side of the building in a white car at 1:53 PM and a Spanish-speaking event was about to start.

She showed her weapon to a security guard who was not carrying a weapon. He let her into the church and then she started shooting inside the hallway at 1:55 PM.

A 28-year-old Houston police officer and a 38-year-old agent with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) were not working and were hired to protect a church, they shot back at someone.

The attacker was shot and killed after firing many rounds in a gun battle, officials said. They were pronounced dead at 2:07 PM.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said that Moreno was seen putting some kind of liquid on the ground, but after checking, they found out it wouldn’t harm anyone.

She got shot, and then she told the police there was a bomb. But when the police looked in her bag and car, they didn’t find any bombs.

Kevin Lilly, the head of TABC, named his agency’s officer as Adrian Herrera.

He praised the two people for staying strong when there was shooting. He said, “What they did yesterday showed great bravery and courage. ”

“They were like a barrier between the worshippers and terror. ” The choice between being able to practice your religion and committing murder.

  • Bawumia calls for international action to combat humanitarian threat of improvised mines

Bawumia calls for international action to combat humanitarian threat of improvised mines

Ghana’s Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has highlighted the pressing need for concerted efforts to address the humanitarian and security challenges posed by improvised mines in conflict-affected regions.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a three-day conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Improvised Anti-Personnel Mines , Dr Bawumia underscored the grave threat posed by landmines, which indiscriminately maim and kill innocent civilians, exacerbating already dire humanitarian crises.

“The presence of improvised mines exacerbates the already  grave humanitarian and security challenges faced by these nations, necessitating urgent and concerted efforts towards effective mine clearance and risk mitigation strategies,” he said.

He added that these insidious weapons not only inflict lasting physical and psychological harm but also disrupt livelihoods, impede socio-economic development, and hinder efforts to achieve sustainable peace and security.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Vice President reaffirmed Ghana’s steadfast commitment to promoting a world free from the scourge of landmines and explosive remnants of war.

Furthermore, Dr Bawumia urged all states that are not parties to the convention on landmines to strive towards ratification, emphasizing the critical role of international cooperation in addressing this pressing humanitarian issue.

    About the conference

Ghana, through the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA), is hosting a 3-day regional conference on the need to address the humanitarian impact of improvised anti-personnel mines in West Africa and the Sahel Region within the framework of the Convention.

This event is being held in partnership with the Implementation Support Unit (ISU) of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production, and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction.

The Convention is the international community’s comprehensive response to the humanitarian impact caused by anti-personnel mines which are indiscriminate weapons that remain dangerous for decades after conflicts have ended.

In 2019, the Convention took a significant step by adopting the Oslo Declaration on a Mine-Free World.

While recognizing achievements, the Declaration emphasised persistent challenges, particularly the increasing threat posed by anti-personnel mines, including the use of improvised ones by armed non-state actors, and their impact on human life and sustainable development.

Scheduled to take place from February 13-15, 2024 in Accra, the upcoming conference offers a platform for a technical discussion on best practices and lessons learned within the framework of the Convention.

The conference will be attended by representatives from States Parties to the Convention in West Africa and the Sahel Region, as well as leading UN agencies, the International Committee of the Red Cross and experts working in mine action.

MoMo operator shot in Walewale; police commence hunt for attackers

A Mobile Money operator identified as Rabiu sustained gunshot wounds and was promptly transported to the Walewale Government Hospital for urgent medical care on Monday evening in the North East Region of Ghana.

According to reports from eyewitnesses, the attack unfolded at a bustling bus station near Nalerigu Junction, located along the Tamale-Bolga Road, within the heart of Walewale township.

Witnesses recounted that three assailants arrived at the scene on motorcycles, initiating the assault with warning shots before directing gunfire at the young operator.

Confirming the incident, Aremeyaw Somo Lucky, the Municipal Chief Executive, acknowledged the severity of the situation and confirmed that the police had initiated a search for the perpetrators.

“I have just received this information about 5 minutes ago,” stated the MCE, emphasizing the urgency of the matter.

While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The incident has sparked concerns about the safety of individuals employed in the Mobile Money sector, underscoring the need for enhanced security measures to protect their well-being.

  • No one from NPP has contacted Alan about his possible return – Buaben Asamoa

No one from NPP has contacted Alan about his possible return – Buaben Asamoa

A key figure within the Movement for Change, has publicly affirmed Alan Kyerematen’s commitment to contesting the presidency as an independent candidate.

Dispelling rumors of any contact between Kyerematen and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding a possible return, he said Mr Kyerematen is poised for the election and will emerge victorious.

“I want to state categorically that nobody from the NPP has contacted him about his possible return to the NPP,” asserted Asamoah, addressing speculation surrounding Kyerematen’s political affiliations.

“He has also not demonstrated any interest in going back to the NPP,” he added.

Asamoah clarified that there is currently no discussion underway between Kyerematen and the NPP, firmly reiterating Kyerematen’s resolve to pursue an independent candidacy.

“He is firm and optimistic about contesting as an independent candidate,” emphasized Asamoah. “He is prepared to contest, win, and become the next president to manage Ghana.”

The prominent member of the Movement for Change further lambasted both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as self-serving entities devoid of genuine concern for the welfare of Ghanaians.

Asamoah’s remarks came as part of his endorsement of Alan Kyerematen’s independent presidential candidacy, emphasizing Kyerematen’s commitment to combating corruption and fostering national progress.

“These two parties are selfish, greedy, and only interested in themselves and what they will get,” Asamoah declared, condemning the NPP and NDC for prioritizing their own interests over those of the Ghanaian people. He argued that both parties, when in power, enact policies and measures that primarily serve their agendas rather than addressing the pressing needs of the populace.

Addressing speculation regarding Kyerematen’s potential return to the NPP fold, Asamoah categorically denied any contact between Kyerematen and the NPP leadership regarding such a possibility. He affirmed Kyerematen’s unwavering commitment to contesting the presidency as an independent candidate, underscoring his determination to lead Ghana towards prosperity and development.

  • US Defence Secretary Austin calls off NATO summits after his hospitalisation

US Defence Secretary Austin calls off NATO summits after his hospitalisation

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin has had to cancel a trip to Nato headquarters because he had to go to the hospital for the third time in three months.

Mr Austin, who is 70 years old, is in the intensive care unit at a hospital in the Washington DC area. The Pentagon said he has a serious problem with his bladder that needs urgent attention.

In a recent announcement, the Pentagon said they expect Mr Austin to be back at work by Tuesday.

His deputy is doing his job for now.

According to a statement from Walter Reed Military Medical Center officials, they don’t expect the person to stay in the hospital for a long time. This statement was released by the Pentagon on Monday. “We think the Secretary will be able to go back to his usual work tomorrow. ”

Mr Austin is in the hospital for a treatment that doesn’t involve surgery. He will be given medicine to make him unconscious while doctors work on his bladder problem. The Pentagon said he will be in the intensive care unit at Walter Reed for his whole stay but didn’t say how long that will be.

People are looking closely at Mr. Austin because his past trips to the hospital have been kept a secret.

He didn’t tell anyone in the US chain of command that he had prostate cancer in December or went back to the hospital in January.

Mr Austin’s bladder problem shouldn’t affect his recovery. He should still be able to fully recover as expected. Maj Gen Pat Ryder, the Pentagon spokesperson, said that the outlook for his cancer is still very good.

The defense secretary was supposed to lead a meeting about Ukraine’s defense in Brussels, Belgium, on Wednesday. It would have been his first trip to another country since he first went to the hospital.

He was supposed to go to a Nato meeting led by Nato’s leader Jens Stoltenberg on Thursday.

Mr Austin joined the latest UCDG meeting online from his house on 23 January.

His office told the media that Mr Austin plans to have these upcoming meetings online.

On Sunday afternoon, the Pentagon said that Mr Austin was taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland for treatment. The White House and senior defense officials were also told about this.

Later in the afternoon, the Pentagon said that Mr. Austin gave his job to Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks.

On Sunday, the hospital said that the secretary had been moved to the critical care unit for extra support and careful watching.

Authorities have not said how long the first black US defense secretary will be in the hospital or when he might start working again.

Mr Austin’s doctors said that his bladder problem was not going to stop him from getting better from cancer.

Last year, Mr. Austin had an operation as part of his treatment for cancer.

He had to go back to the hospital on New Year’s Day because he had a lot of pain in his leg, hip, and stomach from complications after the procedure. The doctors found a bladder infection, and he stayed in the hospital for more than two weeks.

Top military leaders and the Biden administration were not aware of Mr. Austin’s serious illness until three days after he was readmitted to the hospital in January.

The defense secretary is the second in charge of the US military after the president, and is considered a very important member of the cabinet.

The situation made people worry about how open and safe things were, and caused three different investigations into how Mr. Austin dealt with his sickness and time in the hospital. Some important Republicans said he should be fired from his job.

At a meeting with reporters earlier this month, Mr. Austin said he was really sorry for not giving enough notice and that he had said sorry to President Joe Biden in person.

The defence secretary will speak at the end of the month about why he did not tell government leaders about something.

  • Trump backs daughter-in-law Lara Trump to lead Republican National Committee

Trump backs daughter-in-law Lara Trump to lead Republican National Committee

Donald Trump, who used to be the President of the United States, is supporting his daughter-in-law to be in charge of the Republican National Committee (RNC).

MrTrump said he supports Lara Trump and Michael Whatley, who leads the North Carolina Republican party.

He supported on Monday because he was upset with the RNC’s leaders.

The group will choose a new leader if Ronna McDaniel, the current leader, leaves.

The news in the US says that Ms McDaniel might quit her job after the South Carolina Republican primary on February 24th.

The RNC raises money for the Republican party and works to get Republican voters to participate in elections.

MrTrump is the top candidate for the Republican party in this year’s election. His support will probably have an impact on RNC members.

On Monday evening, Mr. Trump said Mr. Whatley has done a great job in North Carolina and should be the next leader of the RNC.

He praised Mr Whatley’s devotion to making sure elections are fair and honest. Whatley has supported the former president’s false claims of cheating in the 2020 election before.

Mr Trump supports his daughter-in-law Lara Trump for the RNC co-chair position because he thinks she is very talented. She is married to his son Eric.

“Lara is really good at talking to people and works hard for everything that MAGA represents,” Mr.

Ms Trump has worked closely with the RNC before and is thought to be very good at raising money for the committee.

The party’s rules say that there must be one man and one woman in charge of the RNC.

The old president said he has also requested Chris LaCivita, the co-manager of his current presidential campaign, to become the RNC’s main person in charge of operations.

Politico said that if Mr. Lacivita takes the job, he will still be Mr. Trump’s co-campaign manager.

If Trump’s support were to happen, it would mean his campaign would be closely connected with the committee and how it works.

But sometimes his approval didn’t work. Mr Whaley did not win the position of co-chair in 2023, even though Mr Trump had supported him before.

There are problems between Mr. Trump and Ms. McDaniel about the Republican debates. This is why people want a new leader for the RNC. The ex-president said no to joining any of them.

The Washington Post reported that Mr. Trump wanted Ms. McDaniel to cancel the debates, but she said no.

She has also been under a lot of pressure because the party didn’t do well in the last elections and because they haven’t been able to raise much money.

She was supposed to keep working in her job until 2025, but there’s a rumor that she might quit after meeting with Mr. Trump at Mar-a-Lago last week.

At the meeting, Ms McDaniel told Mr Trump that she will do what’s best for the party, even if it means resigning.

The Newsmax network asked Mr. Trump if Ms. McDaniel should quit, and he said he thinks she knows and understands that she should.

Europe “needs ten years to increase its stockpile of weapons” – Rheinmetall

It will take Europe 10 years to be fully prepared to defend itself, according to the leader of Germany’s largest defense company, Rheinmetall.

Armin Papperger said that there is no more ammunition available right now.

He said this when Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited a ceremony for building a new factory that makes weapons in Lower Saxony.

Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen were also there.

The comments were made a day after statements from Donald Trump, who is running for president in the US, caused concern in Europe.

The Republican candidate who is most likely to win the nomination said he told a leader from another country that he wouldn’t help Nato members who don’t pay their share, and would even support attackers to do whatever they want.

Rheinmetall plans to spend over $300 million on the new facility. It is expected to make 200,000 artillery shells every year.

Mr Papperger said it will take a while to get ready for an enemy who wants to attack Nato.

“He said we will be okay in three to four years, but to be fully ready, we need 10 years. ”

“Mr Papperger said we need to make 1. 5 million rounds of ammunition in Europe. ” He said that a lot of Europe’s weapons were sent to Ukraine, so Europe doesn’t have much left.

“We need to help Ukraine as long as there is war. It will take at least five years and maybe 10 years to fully replenish our ammunition stocks,” he said.

Chancellor Scholz did not say if he was worried about Mr.

Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana disappointed in Bawumia’s vision for Ghana

Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Samson Asaki-Awingobit, has voiced disappointment over Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent vision statement, labeling it as a regurgitation of unmet assurances.

In his address to the nation on Wednesday, February 7, as the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Bawumia outlined a series of policies aimed at leveraging technology and private sector collaboration to foster sustainable job creation, revenue generation, and propel Ghana into the modern global economy.

Additionally, he pledged to abolish the controversial E-Levy and align port charges with Togo to combat smuggling.

However, Asaki-Awingobit contends that while the outlined policies were commendable, they lacked innovation, merely echoing promises previously made by the government but left unfulfilled.

In an interview with Rainbowradioonline.com, Asaki-Awingobit emphasized the necessity for a social contract with Dr Bawumia and other political candidates, emphasizing the need for accountability should they be elected to office.

“The promise to introduce a system where businesses would be audited not more than once; the policy to use the Ghana Card to acquire a passport, and the others are all good, but we would have to sign a social contract with him and ensure that we hold him to account on these promises if he is elected as president,” remarked Asaki-Awingobit.

He further underscored the importance of scrutinizing all political parties’ manifestos and committing to hold elected officials accountable for their pledges.

As Ghana approaches its upcoming elections, the sentiments expressed by Asaki-Awingobit highlight the electorate’s demand for substantive policy proposals and a renewed focus on accountability and transparency in governance.

  • OSP and Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition host media workshop on electoral corruption

OSP and Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition host media workshop on electoral corruption

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), in collaboration with the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) and its partners, convened a media awareness workshop focused on “Electoral Corruption Offences and Sanctions” on February 7, 2024, at the Fiesta Royale Hotel in Accra.

The workshop drew the participation of 64 attendees, primarily media personnel, alongside representatives from key public institutions including the OSP and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Led by Samuel Appiah Darko, Director for Strategy, Research, and Communication at the OSP, the presentation zeroed in on electoral corruption offenses falling within the OSP’s jurisdiction. Appiah Darko meticulously delineated the range of offenses that the OSP is mandated to investigate, emphasizing the distinction between these and other cases outside the OSP’s purview.

Highlighting the four-fold mandate of the OSP, Appiah Darko underscored the office’s commitment to preventing and investigating corruption, conducting thorough prosecutions, and facilitating the recovery of ill-gotten gains from corrupt practices. He emphasized the importance of clarity in understanding the OSP’s scope of work, noting that while any wrongdoing by politicians may be perceived as corruption by the public, the OSP is specifically tasked with addressing defined instances of corruption.

Furthermore, Appiah Darko stressed the role of the media in dispelling misconceptions about the OSP’s efficacy, urging journalists to play a proactive role in educating the public. He emphasized the need to prevent the perception that the OSP has failed or is not functioning effectively.

The workshop served as a platform for robust discussions and knowledge-sharing among participants, fostering a deeper understanding of electoral corruption and the role of relevant institutions in combating it. As Ghana prepares for upcoming elections, such initiatives underscore the importance of collaborative efforts in ensuring transparency, accountability, and integrity in the electoral process.

  • Robert F Kennedy Jr. apologises to his family for Super Bowl commercial

Robert F Kennedy Jr. apologises to his family for Super Bowl commercial

Robert F Kennedy Jr said sorry to his family for a Super Bowl ad made by a group that supports him for president. The ad was similar to one his uncle, John F Kennedy, used in 1960.

Mr Kennedy, a lawyer who cares about the environment and doesn’t like vaccines, is running for president without belonging to any political party.

The commercial was shown right before the Super Bowl halftime on Sunday.

The ad showed pictures of Robert F Kennedy Jr added to the old 1960 ad.

A lively song that said the Kennedy name 15 times in 30 seconds played along with it.

The ad was created by a group called American Values 2024 that is involved in politics.

Super Pacs are groups that gather money to give to political campaigns. They can give as much money as they want to support politicians, but they can’t work together with the politicians’ campaigns.

The Super Bowl commercial cost $7 million, according to Tony Lyons, who is co-founder of American Values 2024. Tim Mellon gave $15 million to American Values 2024 Pac. Mellon gives a lot of money to groups that support Mr.

One of Mr. Kennedy’s family members spoke out against the advertisement and the candidate’s opposition to vaccines.

“My cousin used our uncle and my mom’s faces in a Super Bowl ad. ” She would be shocked by his dangerous ideas about healthcare,” Bobby Shriver, Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s son and President Kennedy’s sister, wrote on X. “She deeply believed in and supported science, vaccines, and fair access to healthcare. ”

RFK Jr said sorry if the Super Bowl ad upset anyone in his family. The American Values Super PAC made and showed the ad without my campaign’s permission. The law says Super PACs are not allowed to talk to me or my team. I care about all of you. May God give you his blessings.

However, the advertisement stayed at the top of the candidate’s X feed on Monday morning. Stefanie Spear, who speaks for the RFK Jr campaign, said they were happy and thankful that the American Values Pac ran an ad during the Super Bowl.

The original ad wanted to show that John F Kennedy was both young and experienced. President Kennedy, who was a Democrat, became the youngest president ever elected. In 1960, he was running against an experienced politician from the Republican side, who was the current Vice President, Richard Nixon.

The first version had a catchy song with lines that were repeated in the most recent Super Bowl ad: “Do you want a man to be president who has a lot of experience. A man who is old enough to have wisdom and young enough to take action. ”

Robert F Kennedy Jr is 70 years old, which is almost 30 years older than his uncle was in 1960. He is younger than Donald Trump, who is 77, and Joe Biden, who is 81. People worry about how old the two candidates are.

Even though people know who Mr. Kennedy is, he is much less popular than Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump in the polls. Studies show that about 10% of people support him.

Kyle Kondik, who studies politics at the University of Virginia, said that the ad was like many other Super Bowl ads, because it reminded people of the past.

“He said that redoing a political ad from the 1960s is very nostalgic. ”

“Mr Kondik said it’s important for third party candidates to get attention, and this is a major political story today. ” “He’s taking advantage of being an independent in a year when people don’t really like the two main party candidates. ” His family name is his only advantage.

Opinions are divided on whether Mr. Kennedy running for president will take votes from Mr. Biden or Mr. Trump, or bring in new voters who wouldn’t have voted for either major party.

On Friday, the Democratic Party leaders made a formal complaint to the government about RFK Jr’s campaign. They say that RFK Jr’s campaign is working too closely with another group called American Values 2024 to help him get on the ballot in all 50 states.

On Sunday, a spokesperson from the Democratic Party said that Mr. Kennedy is just someone who supports Trump in this election.

  • Trump asks Supreme Court to postpone 2020 election dispute

Trump asks Supreme Court to postpone 2020 election dispute

Former President Donald Trump wants the Supreme Court to stop a lower court‘s decision that he can be charged with a crime even though he was president.

He said that he couldn’t be accused of doing things that happened while he was president during his election interference case.

Three judges from lower courts did not agree and decided that he can be charged with a crime just like any other person.

However, Trump’s lawyers argued that he should not face trial while an election campaign is taking place.

“Having a trial for President Trump during election time will make it hard for him to campaign against President Biden,” Trump’s lawyers said in the documents.

The Supreme Court will decide if they will stop the ruling to let Mr.

The highest court, which has more conservative judges, agreed to the request. This will likely cause a significant delay in the important criminal case. The case accuses Mr. Trump of trying to unlawfully change the 2020 election. It may not be resolved until after the November election.

If the Supreme Court doesn’t stop the decision, a federal trial with Judge Tanya Chutkan will probably happen in the spring.

Mr Trump is running for President, but he also has to go to court for three other cases.

He is being accused of trying to change the results of the 2020 election in Georgia and mishandling classified documents in Florida after leaving the White House.

The third case, based in New York, is about an alleged payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels that was hidden. He said he didn’t do anything wrong in all the cases.

Mr Trump’s lawyers keep trying to postpone his trials so they happen after the 2024 election.

Mr Trump is being accused of four things in the trial for interfering in the federal election: trying to cheat the US, trying to stop an official process, getting in the way of an official process, and plotting against the rights of citizens.

He said he didn’t do anything wrong many times, and his lawyers say that presidents can’t be charged for crimes they may have done while in office, even after they are no longer the president.

The court panel with three judges, including one Republican and two Democrats, rejected the argument last week. They said that the former president can no longer use executive immunity to protect himself from prosecution.

Now, Mr Trump’s lawyers want the Supreme Court to stop the lower court’s decision so that all the judges on the DC Circuit court can look at the case again.

In their court document, they said that if the former president is not given immunity, it could create a pattern where similar legal cases happen more often.

Mr Trump’s lawyers said that if the President is not protected from being charged with a crime, the position of the President will not be the same anymore.

If the lower court says no to reviewing the case, Mr. Trump wants to wait to see what the Supreme Court says before making any more legal moves.

The highest court could answer Mr Trump’s request in some different ways.

It might say no to his request to stop the decision, which would start the trial again. It might say no to Mr. Trump’s appeal, which would stop his argument that he has immunity.

The court might decide to listen to Mr. Trump’s appeal right away, without waiting for the lower court to review it. It could make a quick decision, just like it’s doing for another case about whether Mr. Trump can be on the 2024 election ballot.

It might also choose to schedule the hearing in the court as usual, which might make the trial in the case take longer to happen, possibly after the November election.

The Supreme Court said no to a request from Special Counsel Jack Smith to make a quick decision on Mr. Trump’s immunity argument.

It is not known when the Supreme Court will make a decision on Mr.

  • Delhi becomes fortress as farmers organise massive protest

Delhi becomes fortress as farmers organise massive protest

Many farmers are walking from nearby states to Delhi, India’s capital, to ask for guaranteed prices for their crops.

In 2020, farmers set up camps at the borders of Delhi to protest against laws that they thought were not good for agriculture.

The protest lasted for a year and many people died. It ended when the government agreed to cancel the laws.

On Monday, the police shot tear gas at them at the Shambhu border between Haryana and Punjab states.

Punjabi farmers want to go to Delhi peacefully, but they are not allowed to pass through Haryana. Fights between police and protesters are happening at the Shambhu border and the situation is still tense.

Farmers plan to keep protesting in Delhi until they get what they want.

The police in Delhi have closed the borders on three sides of the city to prevent a repeat of 2020. Farmers had protested for months and blocked the highways connecting the capital to neighboring states. The movement was viewed as a major challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

Traffic was really bad in Delhi on Tuesday. The authorities changed some routes and closed off some roads, which caused a lot of problems.

So far, two meetings between farm union leaders and government ministers have not been able to solve the problem.

Farmers want guaranteed minimum prices for their crops. This would help them sell most of their produce at government-controlled markets. They are also asking the government to keep its promise of increasing farmers’ income two times.

The march happens a few months before the general elections. Modi’s party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), wants to win for the third time. Farmers are powerful voters in India and the government wants to make sure they don’t upset them before the elections.

On Monday, government leaders met with farmers for six hours. Both parties agreed on some of the requests, like dropping the charges against protesters from the 2020 protests.

But everyone didn’t agree on the MSP. In 2021, the government said it would create a group to figure out how to guarantee fair prices for all farm products after the farm laws were canceled. The group still needs to give their report.

At the moment, officials have put up barriers, put fences with sharp wire along the border, and added cement blocks to prevent protesters from getting into the city.

The police have said that big groups of people are not allowed to gather in the city, especially at the places where Delhi meets Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. This is where the farmers are planning to go.

The government in Haryana, led by the BJP, has stopped internet services in seven districts until Tuesday.

More than 200 groups of farmers are joining the march. “We will move without causing any trouble and our goal is for the government to hear what we want,” said Sarvan Singh Pandher, the leader of the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, to the ANI news agency.

Farmers and workers’ groups are planning to stop working on February 16 in the countryside. All the stores, markets, and offices in villages will be shut down, and farmers will block important roads all over the country.

  • Ignore greedy, selfish NPP, NDC; vote competent, diligent Alan – Buaben Asamaoh

Ignore greedy, selfish NPP, NDC; vote competent, diligent Alan – Buaben Asamaoh

Prominent member of the Movement for Change, Yaw Buaben Asamoah, has lambasted both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as self-serving entities devoid of genuine concern for the welfare of Ghanaians.

Yaw Buaben Asamoa hailed the leader of the movement Alan Kyerematen as an incorruptible leader with the requisite commitment and dedication to steer Ghana’s future.

Mr Asamoa emphasized Alan’s impeccable track record, asserting him as the sole candidate untainted by scandal or corruption-related accusations among presidential hopefuls.

He contended that Mr Kyerematen has demonstrated capacity and competence over the past years while serving in government and this uniquely positions him as the right candidate to govern the country effectively.

He further noted that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as lacking the requisite competency and nationalism to lead Ghana forward.

Responding to speculations regarding Kyerematen’s potential return to the NPP fold, Mr Asamoa vehemently refuted such claims, asserting that Kyerematen remains resolute in his decision to pursue an independent candidacy.

He emphasized that neither Alan nor anyone from his camp has engaged in discussions with the NPP regarding a return, firmly dispelling any notions of a reunion.

Asamoa criticized both the NPP and NDC as self-serving entities primarily concerned with their own interests rather than the welfare of the Ghanaian people.

He underscored Kyerematen’s commitment to combating corruption and implementing measures to foster national progress, citing his competency, diligence, and credibility as assets vital for Ghana’s advancement.

  • Greece to legalize same-sex marriage

    Greece to legalize same-sex marriage

In a garden in the north part of Athens, a four-year-old named Niovi pretends to run a shop and sells imaginary cakes.

Christina and Victoria may soon see their dream come true as Greece is close to making same-sex marriage legal for them.

The Parliament will decide on the bill presented by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday. He will have to get support from the left-wing opposition because some people in his own party disagree.

Christina and Victoria will be inside the chamber, hoping for it to pass. Two years ago, they came back to Greece from the UK, where they had gone for work and to be together without any restrictions.

They got married in the UK and their daughter, Niovi, was born there. If the law is approved, they want their marriage to be legal in Greece.

    I don’t have a voice.

After Niovi was born in London, her parents tried to officially record her as a Greek citizen at the Greek embassy, but they were turned away. Christina remembers someone saying, “You should have thought before having her. ”

“It was really bad, I cried in the car for 45 minutes and couldn’t stop. It still brings back bad memories,” Victoria says, tears filling her eyes. “It feels like your own country doesn’t want you. ”

In Greece, the law doesn’t recognize Christina and Victoria as married. Because of this, only Victoria is considered Niovi’s mother, even though Christina provided the egg for Niovi’s birth.

In school, she can’t make decisions and when Niovi was in the hospital, Christina wasn’t allowed to go in her room.

“I am really scared that if something terrible happens to Victoria and she passes away, our child will have to go to social services. They will then check if any of Victoria’s family members want to take care of her,” she said.

“If they don’t, she will have to go to a place for help. ” I cannot make a choice. So the child wouldn’t just lose one mother, she would lose both of us.

The Church disagrees or goes against something.

Fifteen out of the 27 countries in the European Union have made same-sex marriage legal. It is allowed in 35 countries around the world.

Greece has not kept up with other countries in Europe because its strong church has been against changes. If the law is accepted this week, it will be the first country where most people are Christian Orthodox, and the first in the southeastern part of Europe, to allow marriage for everyone.

Gay couples can adopt children, but they cannot have a baby through a surrogate. Only straight couples with a medical need can do that.

“Greece is located in the southeast, but its culture and politics are more aligned with the West,” according to Alex Patelis, who is the prime minister’s top economic advisor and also part of the committee that worked on the marriage bill.

Mr Mitsotakis won the election easily and is now dealing with a weak opposing party. This gives him the opportunity to focus on their issues without hurting his own chances of staying in power.

Mr Patel says that the bill is very important to the Prime Minister’s beliefs. It’s often believed that human rights and equality are only cared about by left-wing parties, but this bill shows that it’s important to everyone. This is from a center-right political party. It’s important to know that equality and individual rights are also beliefs of the right-wing.

There are two different groups in Greek society. A recent survey for Proto Thema newspaper shows that 55% of people support same-sex marriage and a slightly smaller majority support adoption by same-sex couples.

About 50 out of the 158 MPs in Mr. Mitsotakis’s party are expected to either vote against the bill or not be present during the vote.

The Church of Greece doesn’t like the change. They read a letter during church to say that it would be bad for children if same-sex couples can have children. They think it puts the feelings of gay adults before the needs of kids.

Bishop Seraphim of Piraeus has been one of the most vocal religious leaders. We watched the priest leading a busy church service at Agii Anargiri Church in the city. People were dressed nicely and kissing icons and bowing their heads.

He said he would stop MPs who support the bill from coming to his church, and he wishes they were never born.

He said he won’t baptize kids with same-sex parents because he wants to show them that their parents’ actions are wrong.

People are gathered outside parliament in Syntagma Square to protest against a bill. They have banners that say “No children for perverts” and are yelling “Take your hands off our kids”.

A video has images of religious symbols and also has Bill Gates in it. Some people think that Greece is being controlled by a powerful group, and this idea is mixed with the beliefs of traditional Greeks who feel like their customs are being ruined.

Rallou Perperidou says the Bible states that marriage should be between a man and a woman, and anything else is considered a serious sin.

God destroyed people who were practicing homosexuality, like he destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. God will forgive them if they admit they did something wrong and stop doing it.

Kyriaki Chantzara, who is 38 years old, is at the protest with her sister, who is going to have her tenth baby.

“Gay people can’t be good role models for kids because we believe it’s important for them to have both a mom and a dad as examples. ” “Every child has the right to have a dad and a mom,” she says.

In the north of Athens, Niovi, who is four years old, is practicing her English by singing nursery rhymes. Her mom helps her as she reads “Hickory Dickory Dock, the mouse ran up the clock. ”

As the parliamentary vote gets closer, the women are getting more and more excited. Christina says she is very happy.

“It’s the beginning of recognizing and appreciating all kinds of people in our country, and understanding that everyone deserves the same rights. ” This will be real for us because I am Niovi’s mother, and the law should support this. The law will make the truth clear.

  • ‘Denied justice’ in Badombie murder fueling more assassinations in Jirapa?

‘Denied justice’ in Badombie murder fueling more assassinations in Jirapa?

The Upper West Region of Ghana was struck by another tragedy as the CEO of Jirapa Dubai, Mr Eric Johnson, fell victim to an assassination in his room on Saturday, February 10th, 2024.

This incident, reminiscent of the unsolved murder of former Assembly Member of Jirapa Kunkyene, Lawyer Richard Badombie, has reignited concerns over the security situation in the region.

Mr Johnson’s untimely demise sent shockwaves through the community, prompting swift action from law enforcement agencies. On February 11th, five individuals were apprehended by the Ghana Police Service to aid in the ongoing investigation. Mr. Johnson’s body now rests in the Upper West Regional Hospital Morgue, awaiting autopsy.

The circumstances surrounding Mr. Johnson’s death bear striking similarities to the assassination of Lawyer Badombie in May 2022. Prior to his death, Lawyer Badombie had expressed concerns about his safety on social media, raising suspicions of foul play.

Despite assurances from authorities and promises of justice, no arrests have been made in connection to his murder, leaving his family and the community bereaved and frustrated.

The lack of progress in resolving Lawyer Badombie’s case has fueled speculation and criticism, with many questioning the efficacy of law enforcement efforts.

Several individuals believe that Mr Johnson’s tragic fate could have been prevented if decisive action had been taken following Lawyer Badombie’s assassination.

Reflecting on Lawyer Badombie’s funeral held on July 9th, 2022, in Kunchene, Jirapa, the sense of loss and injustice remains palpable. The Ghana Police Service had vowed to pursue the armed robbers responsible for his death, but to date, the culprits remain at large.

In light of Mr. Johnson’s tragic fate, calls for action have intensified, with demands for a thorough investigation and swift prosecution of those responsible.

Drama in NPP! – Bright Simons blows Akufo-Addo’s cover over mounting pressure to sacrifice key govt officials

President Akufo-Addo reportedly is currently in a fix due to mounting pressure from various quarters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to make critical decisions that could significantly impact the upcoming elections.

Speculations suggest that the president is under increasing pressure to remove certain individuals from his government while adding others.

At the forefront of the turmoil is the Finance Minister, whose ‘sacrificial removal’ has been touted as a potential tactic to bolster the Vice President’s standing among voters.

Despite his role in steering Ghana’s economy through turbulent times, pressure is mounting for his resignation in a bid to rejuvenate the party’s electoral prospects.

Simultaneously, there are murmurs of a controversial proposal to elevate the Energy Minister as the Vice President’s running mate, despite resistance from within the party ranks.

This move, if executed, could potentially reshape the political landscape and solidify the ruling party’s electoral ticket. However, dissenting voices caution against such a decision, citing potential backlash from disillusioned supporters.

Furthermore, there are whispers of an impending cabinet reshuffle, with the President urged to ‘axe’ top ministers perceived as out of touch with grassroots sentiments.

This suggestion, while aimed at revitalizing the government’s connection with the populace, poses a significant challenge for the President, who is known to abhor external pressures.

In a recent Twitter post, renowned commentator Bright Simons underscored the gravity of the situation, hinting at the President’s discomfort with mounting pressure.

  • VIDEO: How Akufo-Addo made Gey Hey student’s reply Mahama’s WASSCE cheating claims

VIDEO: How Akufo-Addo made Gey Hey student’s reply Mahama’s WASSCE cheating claims

Students from Wesley Girls’ High School found themselves confronted with an unexpected question from President Akufo-Addo during his visit to mark the school’s 187th speech and prize-giving day of Wesley Girls’ High School in Cape Coast. The atmosphere was electric as the students paid rapt attention to the President’s speech.

During the speech, the President commented on the former President’s claim that students cheated in the WASSCE hence they scored good grades. He then posed a question to the students as to whether the claim is true or not?

The students then responded with a resounding ‘no.’

President Akufo-Addo, for the first time, publicly addressed allegations of cheating during the West Africa Senior Secondary School Examinations (WASSCE), leveled by former President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking at the 187th speech and prize-giving day of Wesley Girls’ High School in Cape Coast, the President firmly refuted the claims, emphasizing the integrity of the examination results.

Former President Mahama had previously alleged instances of cheating during his Building Ghana Tour in late December 2023, suggesting collusion between teachers and students in certain areas. These comments sparked earlier responses from the education minister and other pro-government voices.

In a video making rounds on social media, President Akufo-Addo directly addressed the issue, singling out the former president in his critique. He expressed disappointment at the politicization of education and the baseless accusations made against the integrity of the examination process.

Contrary to Mahama’s claims, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the success and improved quality of education in recent years, emphasizing the significant achievements witnessed during his tenure.

He commended the students of Wesley Girls’ High School for their dedication and honesty, asking them directly whether they engaged in cheating during examinations, to which they vehemently responded with a resounding “no.”

The President underscored the importance of maintaining the credibility of examination results, noting that the achievements of students reflect the efforts invested in improving the quality of education across the country.

He criticized the “unfortunate, misguided sentiments” expressed by some individuals and emphasized that the WASSCE results of the students, whom he proudly referred to as the “Akufo-Addo graduates,” dispel any doubts about the integrity of the examination process.

President Akufo-Addo cited statistics from recent years, pointing out that the results obtained by students during his presidency demonstrate a significant improvement in performance, with more than 50% of candidates achieving A1 to C6 grades in all core subjects in the years 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023.

In concluding his remarks, the President reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the quality and integrity of education in Ghana, urging all stakeholders to work together to ensure continued progress and success in the education sector.

President Akufo-Addo reportedly is currently in a fix due to mounting pressure from various quarters of the New Patriotic Party, to make critical decisions that could significantly impact the upcoming elections.

The speculations have it that the president is under pressure to take some people out of his govt and add some others.

  • 2,900 soldiers from South Africa to be sent to Democratic Republic of Congo

2,900 soldiers from South Africa to be sent to Democratic Republic of Congo

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent 2,900 soldiers to help fight against armed rebel groups in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The soldiers will go to Congo as part of a mission from southern African countries. It was approved by a group of countries in that region in May of last year.

Malawi and Tanzania will also send soldiers to help with the mission.

The mission is taking the place of the East African regional force, which left DR Congo in December because the government thought it wasn’t working well.

The deployment will cost South Africa 2 billion Rand ($105 million; £83 million) and will last until December this year, according to a statement from the presidency.

The announcement comes as there is more fighting happening, which has caused many people to leave their homes in DR Congo. About seven million people have been forced to leave their homes because of different conflicts.

  • Biden asks Israel to protect those who are weak in Rafah

Biden asks Israel to protect those who are weak in Rafah

US President Joe Biden said people in Rafah, Gaza are crowded and in danger. They need to be kept safe.

Israel needs to try really hard to keep the more than one million Palestinians safe in the southern Gazan city.

Rafah is getting hit a lot by Israel’s planes. People are getting hurt.

A doctor from Palestine said people in Rafah are scared.

Last week, the leader of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, said he told soldiers to get ready to go into Rafah. He promised to win against the Hamas fighters who are hiding in the city.

The leader of the UN’s human rights group said that any attack would be very scary and a lot of innocent people would probably die.

More than half of the 2. 3 million people in Gaza Strip are now living in the city on the border with Egypt. There used to be only 250,000 people there before the war between Israel and Hamas started in October.

Many people who have nowhere to live are staying in temporary shelters or tents in dirty conditions, with little access to clean water or food.

On Sunday, Israel’s army saved two men who were being held captive in Rafah.

President Biden once more asked for the safety of the people in Rafah after talking with King Abdullah of Jordan in Washington on Monday.

He said if the military wants to do a big operation in the city, they need to make sure that the people living there will be safe.

“Many people have been forced to leave their homes several times because of the violence. Now they are crowded into Rafah, which makes them easy targets and at risk. ”

“They must be kept safe. ” We have always said that we are against making Palestinians leave Gaza against their will.

Last week, the White House said it would not approve big Israeli actions in Rafah without thinking about the people who live there.

A lot of people have left the area of the Gaza Strip in Israel because of the fighting. Gaza Strip is run by Hamas, a Palestinian group.

Many countries and global groups have told Israel not to start its attack as planned.

UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron said on Monday that Israel should think carefully before doing more in Rafah.

Josep Borrell, who is in charge of the EU’s foreign policy, told friends of Israel to stop sending weapons because too many people were getting killed in Gaza.

Saudi Arabia said there would be big problems if Rafah was attacked.

At the same time, the leaders of Hamas in Gaza said that many people could get hurt if there is a fight, and it could also make it harder to talk about getting Israeli hostages back from Gaza.

Rafah is the only place where humanitarian aid can come into Gaza from Egypt.

Israel’s army started attacking Gaza Strip because 1,200 people were killed in southern Israel on October 7 by gunmen from Hamas. The gunmen also took 253 people as hostages.

Some of the hostages were let go, but Israel says they still don’t know where 134 of them are.

On Monday, the health ministry in Gaza, run by Hamas, reported that 164 people were killed and 200 were injured in Gaza in the past day. 28,340 people in Gaza have died and almost 68,000 have been injured since October 7th, according to the ministry.

  • I’m ready to debate Dr Bawumia and Mahama – Alan Kyerematen

I’m ready to debate Dr Bawumia and Mahama – Alan Kyerematen

Presidential Candidate for the Movement for Change, Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten, has announced his readiness to engage in a presidential debate with his opponents from various political parties, particularly candidates from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

This declaration came during an interview on Neat FM, where Mr. Kyerematen responded to a listener’s question regarding his stance on participating in a presidential debate.

The listener inquired if he would be willing to engage in a debate alongside Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former President John Dramani Mahama.

In response, Mr. Kyerematen expressed his openness to the idea, stating, “Why not?,” indicating his willingness to partake in the debate should the opportunity arise.

The upcoming 2024 general elections is anticipated to be a fierce battle between the NPP, NDC, and other presidential aspirants including the leader of the Movement for Change, with each party vying for control of the presidency.

Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten’s Movement for Change has emerged as a new contender, seeking to challenge the dominance of the traditional parties.

Having previously been associated with the NPP, Mr. Kyerematen’s decision to establish his own party signals a break from the status quo and a desire for change.

He is banking on the support of Ghanaians to vote for him, with hopes of ascending to the presidency.

Similarly, both the NPP and NDC are also gearing up for a fierce electoral contest, each aiming to secure victory and lead the country forward.

As the election approaches, the political landscape in Ghana is expected to intensify, with each party presenting its vision and policies to garner support from the electorate.

The presidential debate, if it materializes, will provide a platform for candidates to articulate their agendas and engage in discourse on critical national issues, further shaping the trajectory of the election.
