  • Same-sex marriage legalised in Greece

    Same-sex marriage legalised in Greece

Greece is the first country with mostly Christian Orthodox people to make same-sex marriage legal.

This means that from now on, couples of the same sex can adopt children because of the vote that happened in parliament.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the new law would “courageously get rid of a big unfairness”.

However, the country is split, and the strong Orthodox Church is leading strong opposition. People who like it, got together to protest in Athens.

A lot of people showed banners, held crosses, prayed, and sang from the Bible in the main square of the city.

The leader of the Orthodox Church, Archbishop Ieronymos, said that the action would harm the unity of the country.

The bill needed at least half of the members in the parliament to vote for it in order to pass.

Mr Mitsotakis wanted to pass the bill, but he needed the help of other political parties to do it because many members of his own party were against it.

The prime minister said in parliament that people who have been ignored will be noticed, and many children will finally get the support they deserve.

“The reform helps some people without hurting others. ”

LGBTQ groups in Greece are happy about the vote.

“This is a very important moment in history,” said Stella Belia, who leads a group for same-sex parents called Rainbow Families, in an interview with Reuters news agency. “Today is a happy day. ”

Fifteen out of the 27 countries in the European Union have made same-sex marriage legal. It is allowed in 35 countries around the world.

Greece has been behind some other European countries because the Church has been against some changes.

This country is the first in south-eastern Europe where same-sex couples can get married.

10 injured as school building collapses on students

A devastating incident has unfolded in the community of Adeiso, located in the Upper West Akim District Assembly of the Eastern Region, as a school building collapsed on a group of students and teachers during a rainstorm.

According to a report by Accra-based UTV, the tragic incident occurred on February 14, 2024, when the dilapidated structure gave way, trapping over 50 basic students and several teachers beneath the rubble. Out of the students affected, 10 were injured, with four of them sustaining serious injuries.

The four severely injured students are currently undergoing treatment at a health facility in Adeiso, receiving urgent medical attention for their injuries.

The collapse of the school building has shed light on the longstanding neglect of the structure by authorities, despite numerous reports highlighting its precarious condition. UTV reporter Ebenezer Ayeh emphasized that the building had been in a state of disrepair for an extended period, yet no meaningful action had been taken to address the issue.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the collapse occurred during a sports program at the school, as students and teachers sought shelter from the rain within the unsafe building. The heavy rains and strong winds accompanying the storm proved to be too much for the weakened structure, leading to its sudden collapse.

The tragic incident has sparked outrage and calls for accountability, with community members demanding swift action to address the negligence that contributed to the disaster. Concerns have been raised regarding the safety of other school buildings in the area, prompting urgent inspections and assessments to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Local authorities have pledged to launch a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse, vowing to hold accountable those responsible for the oversight and neglect that led to the loss of life and injury. Efforts are underway to provide support and assistance to the affected students and their families, as the community grapples with the aftermath of this heartbreaking event.

Julian Assange: Australian lawmakers demand creator of WikiLeaks be released

Australia’s government wants the US and UK to let Julian Assange go, and they just made a formal request for it.

MrAssange will go to the UK’s High Court next week to try to stop the US from sending him there.

An Australian person is in a London prison and the United States wants to charge them with spying. They could go to prison for up to 175 years if found guilty.

Australian government officials voted 86-42 in favor of letting Mr. Assange return home.

The Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, agrees with the decision and wants the Assange case to end soon since he became Prime Minister in 2022.

He talked to President Joe Biden about it during a visit in October.

A group of Australian politicians went to Washington to talk to US lawmakers and ask for Julian Assange to be released from prison.

The WikiLeaks founder is being sought after for sharing secret documents in 2010 and 2011. American authorities believe this action was illegal and put people in danger.

He has always said that the case against him is driven by politics. His lawyers say he might hurt himself if he is sent to the US.

In 2021, a judge in the UK stopped Mr. Assange from being sent to another country, because they were worried about his mental health.

The High Court changed its decision because the US showed that Mr Assange would be taken care of safely. In 2022, the Home Secretary Priti Patel said yes to the US’s request to send someone back there – and that made him try to appeal his case again.

MrAssange’s family wants the Australian government to help get him out of trouble. They are worried that if he is given to the US, he could be stuck in their justice system for a very long time.

Australia’s top lawyer, Mark Dreyfus, talked to the US’s main lawyer, Merrick Garland, about this issue when they met in Washington last month.

“This was a secret talk, but the government still has the same clear position on Mr. ” “It’s time to finish this matter,” Mr Dreyfus said in a statement.

Mr Assange has been in a very secure prison called Belmarsh since 2019. He had been at the Ecuadorian embassy in London for seven years, trying to get asylum in Ecuador.

Blood is thicker than water, Ken Ofori-Atta still fully in charge of the economy – Netizen

In the wake of President Nana Akufo-Addo‘s recent reshuffle, a wave of shock and speculation has swept through the Ghanaian public, with many Ghanaians expressing their surprise and frustration at the unexpected changes in the government’s lineup.

One particularly surprise in the shake-up was the dismissal of Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta. Just when Ghanaians thought they were done with the Finance Minister who on several occasions had been described as incompetent, news broke out that he had been offered a new role. The Finance Minister is expected to assume the position of the senior presidential advisor on the economy.

One outspoken netizen, identified on X as Oh Menua, took to social media to voice his disbelief, highlighting the apparent contradiction in the President’s decision-making process. His response reflects widespread sentiments of confusion and skepticism surrounding the reshuffle, particularly regarding the fate of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

“Don’t kid yourself, blood is thicker than water,” the netizen asserted, alluding to the notion that familial ties and allegiances hold greater sway than professional qualifications or public opinion. Despite being replaced as Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta’s appointment as presidential economic advisor suggests that his influence over economic policy remains significant.

“Herh @NAkufoAddo, you don’t listen,” the netizen continued, addressing President Akufo-Addo directly. The use of the term “Herh,” a Ghanaian expression denoting surprise or exasperation, underscores the netizen’s frustration with what they perceive as a lack of responsiveness from the President.

According to pro-NPP media outlet, Asaaseradio.com, the former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta may be appointed as the senior presidential advisor on the economy, with focus on international investment and the capital markets, according to Asaase News sources in the Office of the President and the Ministry of Finance.

If appointed, his job will see him focusing on attracting international investments to Ghana. This should see him leveraging on his huge international network.

However, a source close to the former Finance Minister, said there has been no letter confirming this appointment.

Our checks at Jubilee also confirmed that Dr Kwaku Afriyie has also received no letter confirming the speculation of his appointment as an envoy on climate.

According to the source close to the former Finance Minister, Mr Ofori Atta intends to take a “reasonably long and deserving break.” He’s expected to travel out of town later on this week.

Mr Ofori-Atta, who lost his job Wednesday, served as Finance Minister for 7 years, making him the longest to have held the portfolio in the history of Ghana’s democracy.

  • South African soldiers killed in attack in Democratic Republic of Congo

South African soldiers killed in attack in Democratic Republic of Congo

Soldiers from South Africa who were sent to the Democratic Republic of Congo to stop a rebellion have had their first deaths.

On Wednesday, two soldiers died and three got hurt when a bomb hit their base.

The South African army said they don’t know all the details of this incident yet.

The soldiers are part of a group working with the military in DR Congo to fight against several armed groups.

The most powerful group is the M23, which has set up in important places on the main roads going into Goma, the biggest city in eastern DR Congo.

The M23’s attack has made tens of thousands of people leave their homes. This adds to the almost seven million people who have fled due to several wars in the east.

However, the South African army has not connected the attack to the M23 group.

South Africa sent soldiers to eastern DR Congo in December with the help of a group called the Southern African Development Community.

Altogether, South Africa will send 2,900 soldiers to help. Malawi and Tanzania are also sending their soldiers.

This military group came to the country after another group from East Africa left because the government of DR Congo asked them to.

President Tshisekedi wants the southern African force to do better because they have more power to do their job.

  • Indian Ocean Island of Mayotte rocked by dispute over French citizenship

Indian Ocean Island of Mayotte rocked by dispute over French citizenship

A small part of France in the Indian Ocean is now at the center of a new argument about immigration laws.

Mayotte, a small island, has been owned by France since 1841. It is now considered a part of France, so it has to follow the same rules as other places in the country.

However, the territory’s tough time dealing with many immigrants is causing President Emmanuel Macron’s government to give up the fundamental French belief in equal treatment for everyone.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said that people born on the island will no longer automatically become French citizens. He announced this while visiting the island on the weekend.

The government is now trying to make a change to the constitution for this. The “birthplace citizenship” rule will only change for the island of Mayotte, not for all of France.

But that’s the problem. Both the left and right sides of French politics have concerns about the reform for various reasons.

The left thinks it goes against the idea that everyone should be treated the same, and could lead to citizenship being based on race.

The right thinks it’s okay to change the rules for Mayotte, but they believe France should get rid of “birthplace citizenship” altogether.

The right of the soil says that if you are born in a country, you are automatically a citizen of that country. The opposite idea is called jus sanguinis, which means that citizenship is only given to children of citizens.

For lots of people, especially those on the left, the right of the soil is very important. It shows that France is a symbol of caring for people.

Actually, in France, the right to citizenship by birth is not automatic. In the US, just having a birth certificate is enough to get a passport, but it’s not the same in France. A child born in France to parents from another country has to apply for French citizenship when they are teenager and show that they have been living in France the whole time.

However, the main idea is still valid. Being born in a place allows you to become a part of the country.

But things happening in Mayotte show how nowadays, the changes in population and lots of people moving to new places are making governments start to think about things that everyone used to agree on.

Mayotte is having a lot of people breaking the rules because they are scared of people from outside taking over their island.

Mayotte is 70km away from the Comoros islands, which is a very poor country in Africa. Mayotte has a problem with small boats coming to the island, which is even worse than the UK’s problem with small boats coming from France.

Every week, many people come in boats from the Comoros, and now there are also more and more asylum seekers from the Great Lakes region of Central Africa.

In the hospitals on the island, over 10,000 babies are born every year, and most of their mothers are from the Comoros. Mayotte has about 300,000 people, but only half of them have French passports.

Since middle of January, groups of people have been blocking roads around the island. They want the government to stop immigration and deal with the crime they believe it brings. Political groups in Mayotte all agree on one thing: the droit du sol needs to end.

Estelle Youssouffa, a Mayotte MP from the independent LIOT bloc in the National Assembly, says that if we don’t change, we will always be confined by our geography.

“We will welcome all the sadness and problems from Comoros and Africa just so that people in Paris can show off their beliefs. ”

Ms Youssouffa says that everyone should feel safe and secure, and that this is a very important right. “Everyone has the right to move around freely. ” We don’t have these rights anymore because the violence is so bad that we can’t live a normal life.

The French interior minister is helping the people of Mayotte, also known as the Mahorais, because they asked for his help. He says that if the right to citizenship by being born on the island is taken away, the attraction to the island will go away.

Right now, most requests for regularisation are from Comoran families whose babies are born in Mayotte and are considered French. When the babies are not born in France anymore, people will stop coming.

No one knows if it is true or not.

Immigrants come to Mayotte not just for citizenship, but because life is better there than other places. And they say that even though the government promises otherwise, what happens in Mayotte could easily happen in all of France.

    Nobody knows if that’s true.

It is clear that both the main and extreme right in French politics are openly discussing ending the right to citizenship based on birth on French soil.

For them, this is the kind of measure needed for the immigration crisis because there were a record 142,500 asylum requests last year.

The Macron government needs the support of the political right to make any changes to the constitution in Mayotte. Could they only support the reform if it was expanded to all of France.

Can they stop the new law for Mayotte because they think it’s too strict. And then try to win the next election by promising to end the law for the whole country.

The world is becoming different. It can happen.

  • PAC reprimands University of Ghana over repeated procurement breaches

PAC reprimands University of Ghana over repeated procurement breaches

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has issued a stern warning to the University of Ghana following repeated breaches of required procurement processes in its projects. The warning came during a PAC sitting on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, where concerns were raised over the university’s continuous flouting of procurement regulations highlighted by auditors.

Chairman of the Committee, James Klutse Avedzi, expressed his disappointment at the university’s persistent violations despite assurances made during previous appearances before the PAC. “You have been appearing here, and this issue has been coming up. You always promise that you will not do it again, but you are still committing the same crime,” remarked Klutse Avedzi.

In response, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, acknowledged the challenges faced by the institution and outlined measures being taken to rectify the situation. Prof. Amfo attributed the breaches to structural issues within the university and inadequate procurement resources, which the university is actively addressing.

“The challenge has to do with the nature of our business, our institution, and also the complexities because we operate in four colleges and the central administration,” stated Prof. Amfo. She further elaborated on efforts to enhance procurement resources, including the appointment of procurement officers across all colleges and improvements in resource allocation for procurement functions.

The PAC also summoned representatives from the University of Professional Studies, Accra, and the University of Media, Arts and Communication to address irregularities identified in their accounts by the Auditor General.

The repeated admonition from the PAC underscores the seriousness of the procurement breaches and the need for swift corrective action by the University of Ghana. As the institution pledges to strengthen its procurement processes, stakeholders will be closely monitoring its progress to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and accountability in financial management.

Hindu Mandir: India’s Prime Minister Modi opens an Abu Dhabi temple

Indian leader Narendra Modi opened a big Hindu temple in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during a two-day visit to the country.

The BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi was built on a 27-acre plot given by the UAE government.

India said it would build something when Mr Modi went to UAE in 2018.

Experts believe that the temple will probably support the government’s Hindu nationalist goals before the upcoming general elections in two months.

Mr Modi opened a big temple for the Hindu god Ram in the city of Ayodhya, which is in northern India, a few weeks ago. In 1992, a 16th-century mosque was destroyed by Hindu mobs, which caused violent riots and led to the death of nearly 2,000 people. It has now been replaced.

The temple in Abu Dhabi is managed by BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. It is a group that promotes Hindu beliefs and values such as faith, service, and global peace.

The organization has been around for 200 years and is based in Mr. Modi’s home state of Gujarat.

Pew research center says there are 660,000 Hindus in the UAE. Although temples have existed in the UAE for many years, it is said that this is the first one to be constructed using traditional methods.

The temple was built in Dubai using pink sandstone from Rajasthan state and white Italian marble that was carved in India.

It is 108ft tall, 262ft long, and 180ft wide. It was built for 7 billion rupees ($84. 2 million)

India and UAE are good friends and trade $85 billion (£67. 6 billion) worth of goods between each other. Indians are the largest group of people living in another country. Many Indian Hindus live in Abu Dhabi.

Mr Modi is in the country to join a meeting of world leaders called the World Governments Summit.

He met with the president of the UAE on Tuesday during his visit. The Indian government’s foreign affairs department said that two countries agreed to a deal to invest in each other’s economies and work together on economic matters.

The agreements are meant to make cooperation stronger in energy security, trade, and building digital infrastructure.

Mr Modi talked to a group of Indian people in Abu Dhabi and thanked the UAE president for giving land for the temple.

  • 3 ‘crazy’ decisions of Jean Mensa-led EC

3 ‘crazy’ decisions of Jean Mensa-led EC

Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) under the leadership of Jean Mensa has come under fire for three controversial decisions.

The decisions have sparked widespread debate and criticism among political stakeholders and the general public.

    Here are three of them:

Sole use of Ghana Card as Voter ID: One of the decisions that has stirred controversy is the EC’s move to adopt the Ghana Card as the sole form of identification for voter registration and verification.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has made a strong case for the use of the Ghana Card as the sole document for identification for purposes of voter registration.

Despite various justifications by the Commission including claims that the use of the Ghana Card as the sole document for identification for voter registration will help improve the integrity of the electoral roll and ensure that only eligible Ghanaians are registered to vote, the decision received heavy backlash.

Critics argued that this decision is likely to disenfranchise citizens who do not possess the Ghana Card, particularly marginalized communities with limited access to the card issuance process.

The decision was eventually rejected by Parliament. The House unanimously recommended to the commission to include the guarantor system in the Public Elections (Registration of Voters) Regulation, 2023 before it could present it for consideration.

Legislators were of the view that unless and until the challenges confronting the issuance of the Ghana Card were dealt with, using the Ghana Card as the only medium of voter registration would negatively impact the electoral roll and thereby deny some otherwise qualified persons from registering to vote.

Change in election date: Another decision that has raised eyebrows is the sudden alteration of the election date. This was initially triggered by a petition by the Seventh-Day Adventist Church who have called for a review of the election date given the fact that December 7 is a Saturday which is a day of worship for the church.

The EC has welcomed the petition and has declared its support for the change of the election date. The Commission has made a proposal, calling for the election date to be shifted from December 7, to November 7.

Many have questioned the need for such a change and have called for greater transparency and accountability from the EC in its decision-making process.

Abandonment of indelible ink: The EC’s decision to abandon the use of indelible ink during elections has also drawn criticism and skepticism.

Indelible ink has traditionally been used as a measure to prevent multiple voting and maintain the integrity of the electoral process. However, the Commission in December 2023, revealed its intention to scrap the use of indelible ink in forthcoming elections.

Justifying their decision, the Commission noted that the biometric identification system flags anyone who attempts multiple registrations and that anyone who has been verified after casting their ballot cannot vote again, hence their decision to scrap the use of indelible ink.

This decision by the EC has also raised concerns about the effectiveness of alternative measures in ensuring the credibility of elections, with various bodies and persons including the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Global Security for Africa Research and Good Governance (GLOSARGG), Adam Bonaa and others, criticising the move.

These three decisions by the Jean Mensah-led EC have sparked controversy and debate, with critics questioning the rationale behind these moves and expressing concerns about their potential impact on the credibility and integrity of Ghana’s electoral process.

As the country prepares for upcoming elections, calls for transparency, accountability, and adherence to international standards in electoral management have grown louder.

  • Giving Bawumia a change is voting Akufo-Addo in power for a 3rd time – NDC

Giving Bawumia a change is voting Akufo-Addo in power for a 3rd time – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed skepticism over Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid for the presidency, alleging that voting for him would essentially be a continuation of President Akufo-Addo‘s governance.

During a press conference, NDC’s General Secretary Fiifi Kwetey emphasized Dr. Bawumia’s integral role in the current administration, suggesting that his promises for change are merely attempts to deceive voters.

Kwetey highlighted concerns over Dr. Bawumia’s credibility, pointing to past unfulfilled promises such as reducing taxes and avoiding levies on mobile money transactions. He accused Dr. Bawumia of conveniently overlooking his involvement in controversial policies, including the E-Levy and VAT on previously exempt items.

Furthermore, Kwetey urged Dr. Bawumia to take responsibility for the economic burdens imposed by the government and called for immediate action to alleviate the tax burdens on Ghanaians.

The NDC’s stance comes in response to Dr. Bawumia’s recent address at the University of Professional Studies in Accra, where he outlined his presidential aspirations and proposed policies, including the abolishment of the E-Levy and VAT on electricity.

Despite Dr. Bawumia’s promises for change, Kwetey reiterated doubts about his trustworthiness, alleging a “character deficit” and a lack of remorse for past misrepresentations.

As Ghana prepares for the upcoming general elections, the NDC’s critique underscores the intensifying political discourse surrounding the future direction of the country and the competing visions put forth by the major political parties.

At least five people died in an air attack on the Russian city of Belgorod, according to the governor of the region.

Eighteen people were hurt in the attack near the Ukrainian border.

Videos on social media showed many ambulances outside a shopping center with broken windows.

Russian officials said their defense systems shot down 14 missiles from Ukraine in the Belgorod region.

Russian Zvezda TV, which is connected to the military, reported that one missile hit a shopping center and one landed on the city’s sports stadium.

Belgorod is about 30 kilometers (19 miles) away from the Ukraine border.

Ukrainian forces have been attacking it since Russia invaded Ukraine nearly two years ago.

In December, a drone and rocket attack killed 25 people and hurt 100 others in Belgorod, marking the deadliest attack in the city.

Yesterday, Russia shot 26 missiles at Ukraine. It killed a 66-year-old woman in Chuguyiv, near Kharkiv in the east, and hurt many other people.

At the same time, fighting continues in the eastern town of Avdiivka in Ukraine.

A few Ukrainian soldiers told the media that the town might be taken over very soon. They said they don’t have enough weapons and ammunition.

NATO boss Jen Stoltenberg said Thursday that if the US doesn’t keep helping Ukraine’s military, it will hurt them in fighting.

Avdiivka is an important place because it is a way to get to the city of Donetsk, which is controlled by Russia. It has been active on the front line since 2014 when the fighting in eastern Ukraine began.

  • Chief State Attorney disbarred for misconduct in Alfred Woyome case

Chief State Attorney disbarred for misconduct in Alfred Woyome case

Chief State Attorney Samuel Nerquaye-Tetteh is facing severe repercussions from the General Legal Council (GLC) due to professional misconduct in his management of a case involving businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome.

The GLC, the regulatory body overseeing the legal profession in Ghana, took the decision to disbar Nerquaye-Tetteh after finding him guilty under Rule 2(2) of the Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, 1969 (L.I. 613). This ruling effectively prohibits Nerquaye-Tetteh from practicing law in Ghana for the rest of his career.

The disciplinary action stems from an incident in 2011 when Nerquaye-Tetteh, while representing the state in a lawsuit filed by Alfred Agbesi Woyome, personally arranged for the transfer of GHs400,000 from Woyome to the bank account of his wife. The GLC noted that Nerquaye-Tetteh failed to provide a reasonable explanation for this transfer, leading to allegations of professional misconduct.

In a notice dated January 31, 2024, the GLC outlined the specifics of the case, highlighting the adverse impact of Nerquaye-Tetteh’s actions on the dignity and reputation of the legal profession. The notice emphasized that such behavior was unacceptable, particularly given Nerquaye-Tetteh’s position as a Chief State Attorney.

Signed by the Judicial Secretary, Justice Cynthia Pamela Koranteng, the notice officially disbars Nerquaye-Tetteh from practicing law and prohibits him from holding himself out as a lawyer or providing legal services to the public. The GLC’s decision to withdraw Nerquaye-Tetteh’s practicing license underscores the severity of the misconduct and reflects the council’s commitment to upholding professional standards within the legal profession.

The case involving Nerquaye-Tetteh serves as a reminder of the importance of ethical conduct and accountability among legal practitioners, highlighting the consequences of breaching professional standards. As Ghana’s legal community processes this development, it underscores the need for vigilance and adherence to ethical principles to maintain public trust and confidence in the legal system.

  • Alan Kyerematen slams Bawumia over ‘driver-mate’ analogy in Feb 7 address to nation

Alan Kyerematen slams Bawumia over ‘driver-mate’ analogy in Feb 7 address to nation

Leader of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has taken aim at Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, accusing him of downplaying his role in the administration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and contributing to the country’s economic challenges.

Kyerematen expressed his concerns about Bawumia’s self-proclaimed position within the government’s hierarchy, particularly referring to the vice president’s recent characterization of himself as a “driver’s mate” in the Akufo-Addo administration.

In an interview on Oyerepa TV on February 12, 2024, Kyerematen voiced his disappointment with Bawumia’s self-assessment, arguing that it contradicted the influential role the vice president has played in the government. Kyerematen contended that while the vice president has claimed credit for numerous government initiatives, referring to himself as a “driver’s mate” undermined his authority and significance within the administration.

“It is a bit disappointing for the vice president to say that he is the driver’s mate, because if you say you are a co-pilot, then it makes sense because the presidency is one ticket. So you cannot strictly separate the president from the vice president,” Kyerematen remarked.

He continued, highlighting the inconsistency of a “mate” making significant decisions on behalf of the “driver,” stating, “Have you seen a mate who takes major decisions on behalf of the driver? So it means that it is a conflicting signal and because you want power you want to debase the executive authority of a vice president.”

Kyerematen’s criticism comes in response to Bawumia’s recent address at the UPSA auditorium in Accra on February 7, where the vice president outlined his vision for Ghana. Bawumia emphasized his readiness to assume the role of president, stating, “if, by the Grace of God, you make me President, I will be in the driver’s seat with constitutionally mandated authority to pursue my vision and my priorities.”

Bawumia outlined his vision for creating a prosperous and inclusive Ghana, emphasizing the need for unity and economic growth. However, Kyerematen’s remarks underscore growing tensions and divisions within the ruling party regarding leadership dynamics and future aspirations.

  • Donald Trump scheduled to attend hush money case hearing

Donald Trump scheduled to attend hush money case hearing

Donald Trump is supposed to go to an important court meeting for his criminal hush money case on Thursday.

Judge Juan Merchan will probably decide when the trial will start. It’s supposed to begin on March 25th in Manhattan.

Mr Trump is accused of lying about his business records to hide money he paid to a film star during the 2016 election. He is facing 34 serious charges for this.

He said he didn’t do it when he went to court for the first time last April.

Attorney Steve Sadow said that President Trump will go to court in New York on Thursday.

Even though this is just a routine meeting, Mr. Trump’s lawyers can try to make a final effort to have the case thrown out or postponed before it goes to trial.

The judge in New York State, Judge Merchan, will likely listen to their reasons on Thursday. He hasn’t shown any sign that he plans to cancel or postpone the trial.

Donald Trump recently went to court in New York for two civil cases. He argued with judges and claimed he was being unfairly treated because of his politics.

However, Trump has only been in court once for the hush money case. He appeared in person for his arraignment. At the hearing, he said only a few words, especially, “not guilty”.

He has criticized the judge and prosecutor publicly, outside the courtroom and on social media. After he was charged, Mr. Trump called Judge Merchan a “judge who hates Trump” during a speech on TV.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg accused former president Mr. Trump of 34 serious crimes last March. It’s the first time a former president has been charged with crimes.

Stormy Daniels said that she and Mr. Trump had sex at a famous golf tournament in 2006. She also said that ten years later, Mr. Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, gave her $130,000 to not talk about the supposed meeting during Mr. Trump’s campaign for president.

Lawyers say that Mr. Trump told Mr. Cohen to make the payments, and then falsely wrote them down as business expenses when they were really payments to Mr. Cohen for hush money.

Usually, lying on business documents is a small crime.

Mr Bragg says he brought serious charges against Mr Trump because he believes Mr Trump tried to hide a second crime by committing fraud. He has not completely explained his theory about the second crime yet, but he mentioned last year that his office was thinking about a few possibilities.

Mr Bragg said that Mr Trump made false business records to hide illegal activities from voters during the 2016 election.

For months, no one knew if this trial would happen on time because Mr. Trump got three more criminal cases and had to go to court for other reasons.

There are four court cases against Mr. Trump and they are getting closer to trial. Trump is also busy campaigning for president at the same time.

Maybe the most important case, where he’s being prosecuted for trying to change the 2020 election results, was supposed to start in early March. This case might have delayed the hush-money case.

However, the case is currently not moving forward because Mr. Trump’s lawyers are trying to argue that as a former president, he cannot be prosecuted. A court said no, and we don’t know if the highest court will hear the case.

However, the ex-president still has many legal appointments, and some of his most important cases are coming together this week.

On Thursday in Atlanta, Mr. Trump’s lawyers are going to court to ask for the prosecutor in his Georgia election case to be removed because of alleged misconduct.

On Friday, a judge in New York might make a decision in a trial about lying to get money. This could mean the business has to pay a lot of money and have big problems in New York.

  • Japan falls into period of economic decline

Japan falls into period of economic decline

Japan’s economy has shrunk for two quarters in a row, so now it’s in a recession.

The country’s total economic output shrank more than predicted by 0. 4% in the last three months of 2023, compared to the previous year.

It happened after the economy got smaller by 3. 3% in the last three months.

According to Japan’s Cabinet Office, the country is no longer the world’s third-largest economy. Germany has taken over that position.

Economists thought the new information would show that Japan’s economy grew by more than 1% in the last three months of last year.

The most recent numbers show how much Japan’s economy has grown recently. These numbers might change later.

A technical recession is when the economy shrinks for two quarters in a row.

In October, the IMF said that Germany is expected to become the world’s third-biggest economy when measured in US dollars, surpassing Japan.

The IMF will only say which country is doing better once both countries have shared their final economic growth numbers. It started sharing information about different economies in 1980.

Economist Neil Newman said on the media that new numbers show Japan’s economy was valued at about $4. 2 trillion in 2023, while Germany’s was valued at $4. 4 trillion

This happened because the Japanese money was not very strong compared to the dollar. If the yen gets stronger again, Japan could become the third biggest economy again, Mr.

At a meeting for the media in Tokyo, the IMF’s second in command, Gita Gopinath, said an important reason Japan might drop in the rankings is because the yen dropped 9% against the US dollar last year.

However, the yen is not very strong, which has made the stock prices of big Japanese companies go up. This is because it makes it cheaper for other countries to buy Japanese exports like cars.

This week, Tokyo’s main stock index, the Nikkei 225, reached 38,000 for the first time since 1990, when a drop in property prices caused an economic crisis. The Nikkei 225 reached its highest point ever on December 29, 1989, at 38,915. 87

The new GDP data might also mean that the country’s central bank will wait even longer to decide to increase the cost of borrowing.

The Bank of Japan made interest rates below zero in 2016 to encourage people to spend and invest more money.

Negative rates make the yen less appealing to people around the world, so the value of the currency has gone down.

  • Ukraine perseveres in destroyed city of Avdiivka despite dire lack of firearms

Ukraine perseveres in destroyed city of Avdiivka despite dire lack of firearms

The man’s hand looked very different and hard to tell what it was. Like a peach that’s been cut and damaged.

“The Ukrainian army surgeon tapped the frozen fingers and said they were as hard as a rock. ”

That morning, he treated the second person with frostbite. He was in a small cottage near Avdiivka, a town under attack in Ukraine, standing next to a table where he did surgeries.

“The surgeon looked sad and said that he will likely lose both of his hands. ”

As Russia has been invading Ukraine for almost two years, the mood among Ukraine’s defenders is getting worse. They are tired, frustrated because they don’t have enough weapons, and they know the war won’t end quickly.

“My friend died today,” a soldier with a beard yelled as he burst into the 47th Brigade’s hidden hospital, swearing and letting in a blast of cold air.

A short time later, two more injured men were brought in through a different entrance for help. Vadym, 48, got hit in the arm by metal pieces while his group was attacking a Russian position in Avdiivka during the morning.

“It’s really difficult,” he said, as the surgeon, a senior lieutenant named Vitalii, came over to check the wound and two army medics removed Vadym’s dirty uniform.

“We don’t have the weapons we need. ”

It’s “The enemy has a lot of different kinds of equipment, while we have almost nothing,” said the other wounded man, 24-year-old Andrii, before showing signs of pain. An explosion from a Russian shell hit his trench while he was sleeping and a piece of shrapnel injured his ankle.

The doctor, Vitalii, worked at a hospital for kids before the war. He was tired as he talked about cutting off people’s arms and legs last year in Ukraine when they tried to fight back against Russia. He also talked about the injuries from pieces of metal that were causing him a lot of pain all the time.

“He said the West should help Ukraine more because if they don’t, their soldiers will have to fight against the evil that has invaded our country. ”

Up north, two big Ukrainian tanks drove on a dirty and snowy country road, then turned and went through another village that was badly damaged. They were heading towards the closest Russian military position, which was about 2km away.

After fighting for many months, the Kremlin’s forces seem like they could soon surround the ruins of Avdiivka. Some Ukrainian soldiers are saying that the town, where some of the worst fighting of the war has happened, could be taken over at any time.

“A Ukrainian soldier named Oleksii from the 110th Mechanised Brigade said that they are very unhappy, while standing next to a big mobile artillery piece and hearing the sound of Russian guns in the distance. ”

The artillery from the Czech Republic can hold and shoot up to 36 shells at once. Last year, it was regularly shooting 80 shells a day at Russian positions near Avdiivka. Not today

“We have two shells right now, but we don’t have any explosives for them, so we can’t shoot them. ” “We don’t have any more shells right now,” Oleksii said. He said that there were not enough of some things in many places, and this was causing big problems for the fighting in Avdiivka.

“We feel very responsible for our soldiers fighting in the town with only assault rifles. It reminds me of earlier in 2022 when there wasn’t enough ammunition and I got hurt. ”

Oleksii said he is afraid there will be a lot of people getting hurt like he saw in the hospital before.

In the hospital, the two injured men were now wrapped in bandages. The man named Vadym wanted to leave, but the doctor said he needed to stay for at least a week.

The doctor, Vitalii, laughed at the thought that some Ukrainian soldiers might be purposely getting frostbite injuries to avoid the terrible conditions on the front lines.

“That’s ridiculous” You must be really really stupid. We don’t have people leaving our group like that, and I’ve never experienced a situation like that. Instead, our fighters are very determined to stay strong,” he said.

The weather is very cold and they have to sit in holes in the ground without a heater when it’s -15 or -20C. If they use a heater, the Russians will be able to see them using special cameras.

  • Supreme Court of India eliminates anonymous election funding

Supreme Court of India eliminates anonymous election funding

India’s highest court has canceled a program that let people give money to political parties without revealing their identity. They said it goes against the constitution.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government started electoral bonds in 2018 to make it clearer where political funding comes from.

But some people say that it has actually made the process more confusing.

Mr Modi’s BJP got a lot of money from bonds.

The plan was questioned in the highest court because it was seen as a way of changing how democracy works.

On Thursday, a group of five judges decided that electoral bonds go against the rights of citizens to get information from the government.

The top judge in India, DY Chandrachud, said the Right to Information law is not just about government matters, but also includes information needed for people to be part of democracy.

“Political parties are important in elections, and it’s essential to know where their money comes from when deciding who to vote for,” he said.

The court told the government-owned bank, State Bank of India, to stop selling those bonds. They also have to give the names of the people who bought the bonds and tell the Election Commission which political parties cashed them in, all within a week.

It was also noticed that electoral bonds were not the only way to stop the use of cash or “black money” and the government was asked to look at other options.

“The court said that people need to make sure the government is doing the right things and being transparent. This can only happen if the government is open and not keeping secrets. ”

The government said they made the policy to stop people from giving money to political parties in cash. They did this because many of India’s elections are paid for by private donations.

These bonds are given out by the government in set amounts of money, and can be bought from a state-owned bank at certain times of the year. They don’t charge interest and have to be paid back within a certain time.

People and businesses can donate money to political parties without telling anyone who they are.

Only political parties that are officially recognized and got at least 1% of the votes in the last election can get the bonds. They have to use the bonds within 15 days.

The people who like the plan say it makes it easy to see where the money for political parties comes from and keeps it clear, and also keeps the person who gives the money secret.

Critics say that the bonds are not completely anonymous because the state-owned bank knows who gives the money and who receives it. This makes it easy for the government in power to see the details and use the information to influence donors.

They also say that there is no public record of who bought each bond and who received the donation. This means taxpayers don’t know where the donations came from.

In court, people said that this stops citizens from knowing about how political parties get their money and encourages dishonest behavior.

The government said it was important to keep the names of donors secret, so they wouldn’t be punished by political parties. They also said the accusation was not true.

Up until now, electoral bonds totaling 160 billion rupees ($1. 9 billion; £15 billion) have been sold in 29 batches.

The BJP got 57% of the bonds, while the main opposition Congress party only got 10%.

  • Two Chinese fishermen killed after Coast Guard pursues them at sea

Two Chinese fishermen killed after Coast Guard pursues them at sea

Two Chinese men who were fishing in the water near Taiwan’s Kinmen islands died after the Taiwanese coastguard tried to catch them.

Taipei said the fishing boat went into Taiwanese waters on Wednesday without permission.

Four fishermen on a boat refused to be checked by the authorities, and the boat overturned when the authorities tried to follow them.

Beijing was very upset about the incident and said it really hurt the feelings of people in Taiwan and China.

Kinmen is very close to China, just 3km away, and is on the front line of the conflict between China and Taiwan.

China thinks of Taiwan as a part of its own country and may use force to make it part of China someday.

Recently, people who live in Kinmen have said they are seeing more Chinese boats that dig up sand and mud near the island. The group of islands has around 180,000 people and is 187km away from Taiwan’s main island.

The coastguard said two out of the four people on the Chinese boat were declared dead at the hospital after attempts to revive them didn’t work.

“The other two people are okay and have been taken to Kinmen for more investigation by the prosecutors,” the statement said.

Wednesday’s incident happened when things were already getting tense between the two groups. In January, Taiwan chose a new leader that China sees as wanting to split from China.

China’s office that deals with Taiwan has asked the Taiwanese government to look into the situation and help the families of the victims.

Zhu Fenglian, a person who speaks for the government, said that the ruling party in Taiwan is taking Chinese fishing boats without permission and hurting the fishermen in a violent way.

She said that Beijing thinks that the communities on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are like one big family.

She said they have worked hard to make things easier for fishermen on both sides.

The Taiwan government supported the coastguard’s actions on Thursday and asked China to stop doing the same things in their waters.

“Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council said that many Chinese fishing boats have been coming into our off-limits waters and catching valuable fish, especially during the Lunar New Year. ”

“We feel very sorry that the Chinese crew did not work with our law enforcement and this bad thing happened,” it said.

He is now bigger than MoF – Franklin Cudjoe raises alarm over Ofori-Atta’s purported new role

Head of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has responded to recent reports surrounding the purported appointment of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to a new position.

The news broke barely 12 hours after Ofori-Atta’s dismissal as minister, with pro-government Asaase Radio reporting that he had been named a senior economic advisor to the president.

Cudjoe weighed in on the development, highlighting the significance of Ofori-Atta’s alleged new role. Referring to the reported designation as “president’s special envoy on international investment and the capital markets,” Cudjoe emphasized the influential responsibilities that Ofori-Atta would likely undertake, asserting that he would effectively spearhead negotiations for major deals.

Cudjoe quoted a segment of the Asaase Report outlining Ofori-Atta’s purported responsibilities.

Quoting from the report, Cudjoe emphasized: “The former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta is to be appointed as the senior presidential advisor on the economy. He will also serve as the president’s special envoy on international investment and the capital markets, according to Asaase News sources in the Office of the President.”

Cudjoe’s analysis followed: “Meaning he will be in charge of negotiating most big deals.. he is now bigger than MoF……” This assessment underscores the perceived significance of Ofori-Atta’s reported appointment, suggesting that it elevates his influence and responsibilities beyond those of the Ministry of Finance.

News of Ofori-Atta’s potential new role comes amidst a backdrop of governmental changes, prompting reactions and discussions about the implications of such decisions on Ghana’s economic landscape.

As the situation unfolds, stakeholders are closely monitoring developments regarding Ofori-Atta’s purported appointment and its potential impact on national economic policies and negotiations.

  • Wrong timing – Kwadwo Mpiani reacts to Akufo-Addo’s reshuffle

Wrong timing – Kwadwo Mpiani reacts to Akufo-Addo’s reshuffle

A former Chief of Staff during the Kufuor administration, Kwadwo Mpiani, has voiced apprehensions regarding the timing of President Akufo-Addo’s recent ministerial reshuffle, occurring just ten months before a general election.

Speaking on JoyNew, Mr Mpiani expressed reservations, noting that while the President holds the prerogative to effect such changes, the proximity to the upcoming elections raises questions about the efficacy and ramifications of the reshuffle.

Mpiani, who held a pivotal role in the Kufuor administration, acknowledged the President’s authority to reshuffle the cabinet based on performance evaluations. However, he questioned the appropriateness of implementing such changes mere months ahead of the general elections.

“I don’t have a reaction to the ministerial reshuffle because it is the President’s prerogative. He works with the Ministers and the deputy ministers and he should be able to determine who is working well or otherwise.

“But I think that eight months to an election will not have any effect on the direction of government. So I think the timing is the problem, otherwise, it is his prerogative to do a reshuffle as he sees fit,” he stated on Wednesday.

He further expressed concerns about the learning curve for the newly appointed ministers, emphasizing that the timeframe is insufficient for them to grasp the intricacies of their ministries adequately.

“Some of these appointees are completely new. How are they going to learn and know what goes on in the Ministries to enable them to direct the ministries as expected of them?” he questioned.

“So what do you want to achieve? It is too close to the election, and I don’t believe they can effect any massive change,” he asserted to host Evans Mensah.

Mpiani’s remarks align him with a chorus of influential voices in the country who have criticized the timing of the reshuffle, deeming it belated.

On Valentine’s Day morning, President Akufo-Addo announced his inaugural significant ministerial reshuffle, impacting approximately 12 current ministers of state, including 10 cabinet ministers and two regional ministers.

Notable ministers, including Ken Ofori-Atta and Kwaku Agyeman Manu, lost their positions entirely – Finance and Health Ministers respectively.

  • 2024 US election: Putin chooses Joe Biden over Trump as his preferred presidential nominee

2024 US election: Putin chooses Joe Biden over Trump as his preferred presidential nominee

Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that he prefers Joe Biden to win the US election in November rather than Donald Trump.

Mr Biden said something that will surprise people. He is more experienced and predictable.

Prior to running for president in 2016, Mr. Putin had said good things about Mr. Trump, calling him “outstanding and talented”.

Mr Biden has been strongly against Mr. Putin for a long time. He called him a “killer” even before the invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian president said he didn’t like his recent interview with US journalist Tucker Carlson because the questions were not tough enough.

In a TV interview on Wednesday, Russian President Putin said that he thinks Mr. Biden would be a better leader for Russia because he has more experience, is predictable, and is an old-school politician.

He ignored questions about Mr. Biden’s age and mental health. He said that when they met in 2021, he didn’t notice anything strange.

“Three years ago, some people were saying he wasn’t good at his job, but I didn’t see any evidence of that,” he said.

FULL TEXT: NDC’s reply to Bawumia’s Feb 7 lecture

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially responded to Dr Mahaumdu Bawumia’s February 7, 2024 lecture, where he outlined his vision for Ghana if elected President.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer delivered the speech at UPSA to outline his vision to Ghanaians in his bid to rise from vice president to president.

The NDC General Secretary, at a press conference on Wednesday, 14 February, submitted that if the vice president could “stab” President Nana Akufo-Addo in the back, then no one would be safe under his leadership.

Dr Bawumia, while outlining his vision for Ghana last week, distanced himself from a lot of the programmes and policies of the Akufo-Addo government and insisted he had a vision of his own.

He said Dr Bawumia unlike John Mahama, the NDC’s flagbearer; is deficient in trust, credibility, competence, experience, responsibility, vision, and gratitude and, thus, does not deserve the presidency.

JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA, A PRESIDENT YOU CAN TRUST

Speech read by Fifi Fiavi Kwetey

Good afternoon, ladies, and gentlemen of the media.

His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress has been on the Building Ghana Tour. So far, he has visited eleven (11) out of the sixteen (16) regions of Ghana with his vision and message of hope. Specifically, he has visited the following regions: Volta, Northern, Upper East, Bono East, Bono, Ahafo, Western, WesternNorth, Central, Ashanti and Eastern.

As General Secretary of the NDC, I have accompanied President Mahama on some of these Tours in pursuit of the quest to build the Ghana we want together with Ghanaians.

So far, these assurances encapsulate the vision John Mahama presents for Ghana, emphasizing his focus on sustainable development, job creation, anti-corruption measures, and significant improvements in the education and health sectors.

A few days ago, the Flagbearer of the failed New Patriotic Party, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia outdoored what he described as the next chapter at the auditorium of the University of Professional Studies, Accra, UPSA.

Entering the campus of the UPSA for his speech, I hope the NPP flagbearer recognized and appreciated the solid transformation IPS, now UPSA underwent under the visionary NDC government of President Mills and President Mahama and with the leadership of Professor Joshua Alabi, then Vice chancellor of the University. This is the true meaning of we have the men and women of substance. Not the NPP kind.

In that very auditorium of the UPSA, the credible, visionary, experienced, incorruptible, nation builder John Dramani Mahama delivered his ground-breaking speech on “Building the Ghana We Want” about seventeen (17) months ago in October 2022. That epochal address was a sequel to Mr. Mahama’s alternative policies-laden “Ghana at Crossroads” speech in May 2022.

This means twenty-one (21) months ago whilst Mahama was espousing alternative policies in the hope that the government will listen to bring relief to suffering Ghanaians, Bawumia and his NPP so-called solid Economic Management Team werebusy destroying Ghana’s economy, impoverishing Ghanaians and sinking many Ghanaians into great suffering.

You may recall Mahama’s promise to abolish the e-Levy in May 2022 against the resistance and stubborn impedance from the NPP government and legislators. And you may also remember the following assurances from President Mahama that he will:

Get Ghanaians out of the mess the NPP has created and provide hope for all.

Strictly enforce prudence in the management of public finances by cutting out waste and ostentation and ensuring the Bank of Ghana plays by the rules. Not the malpractices we have seen where the Bank of Ghana has become a money printing machine, intoxicating government with seigniorage thereby accelerating inflation to a high of 54%.

Restore faith in our almost collapsed financial system and embark on sweeping reforms at the Bank of Ghana.

Actively pursue policies to ensure robust local participation in our banking, financial, telecommunications, mining, agriculture, agribusiness, and manufacturing sectors.

Operating the leanest but most efficient government under our fourth republic with sixty (60) ministers and deputy ministers of state in addition to drastically reducing staff at the bloated presidency – You know what? I Guess if Mahama had mentioned 50 in his October 2022 address at the UPSA, the copycat Bawumia would have gone for 40 and if he had proposed 40, Bawumia would have opted for 30.

And do you recall the Vice President, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia promisingNPP delegates during their presidential primaries – in Awutu Senya East Constituency of the Central Region –that he will allocate at least ten (10) appointments to party members in each of the 275 constituencies if he became president? The primaries are over so his promise to the NPP delegates is dead. Alhaji Bawumia Ghanaians are not going to fall for your lies!

Ladies and gentlemen, I submit to you that long before the NPP flagbearer began thinking about the future, Mahama had thought. Hence no amount of political chicanery can save the NPP come December 7, 2024.

Mr. Mahama has also in the past assured Ghanaians that he will initiate and undertake the most far-reaching constitutional, political and governance reforms to restore confidence in our democracy in addition to abolishing the payment of ex-gratia to members of the executive under Article 71 and persuading other arms of government to accept same.

Let us face the truth! The NPP promised heaven whilst Ghana was on earth under Mahama and has delivered hell to every Ghanaian except their close families and friends. And so how can you trust the NPP going forward? I mean how? Can youtrust a party that sharply criticizedand condemned $1 to Ghc3.9 and is now serving you with an exchange rate of $1 to Ghc12.6?

Ladies and Gentlemen, with the round condemnation and disappointing reception Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia’s speech has received both in traditional and social media, we would have ordinarily let Ghanaians stick to their own negative verdict on the vice President’s address.

However, because he peddled many lies, we are dutybound to set the records straight. Moreover, we must bringto the attention of Ghanaians grave character and capacity failures that we believe must not be glossed over if trust is to be restored again in political leadership across the partisan spectrum.

The following are six critical deficits Dr Bawumia is suffering from, which make him unfit for leadership unlike John Dramani Mahama.

    1. Vision Deficit

A true servant leader must be endowed with clarity of vision and ability to see far.

John Mahama who came from the Kwame Nkrumah stock, moldedby Jerry John Rawlings and inspired by Professor Atta Mills has proven to have so much of the clarity of vision of his illustrious predecessors.

It takes a visionary to work closely with Prof. Mills to establish the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant. This single infrastructure has represented a massive game-changer within the energy ecosystem of the country.

It takes a visionary to make the far-reachinginvestments in health infrastructure like the UGMC, the Ridge Hospital, the Ga East Municipal Hospital, the Shai Osudoku Hospital etc. that became so critical during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It takes a visionary head of economic management team to have the far sightedness to establish a stabilization fund as part of the oil revenue funds. That stabilization fund became a saviorto the visionless Bawumia led economic team when COVID struck in the year 2020.

It takes a visionary to establish a sinking fund to be used for the repayment of the remainder of the first Eurobond ($750 million) Ghana contracted under President Kufour. In nearly 8 long years during which the NPP government has had access to a total resource envelope of over 800 billion Cedis, the Bawumia led economic team cannot point to one dollar left in any fund to take care of the strangulating debts we have to be paying soon from 2025.

It takes a visionary leader to construct over 900 km of rural fibre optic backbone, connecting 120 communities in all, from Ho to Bawku with a link from Yendi to Tamale.

This superlative vision is acknowledged even if grudgingly by NPP’s own minister for communications, Ursula Owusu, as the biggest telephone infrastructure on which government digitalization efforts are run.

It takes a visionary leader to also build a 300 km metro fibre optic network within the Tema-Accra enclave that offersWi-Fi and internet services to the public and institutions.

Not to forget about the vision to invest in other robust digital infrastructure –4G LTE, the National Data Centre, the Accra Digital Centre, and several electronic applications, including the e.services.gov.gh platform which Bawumia renamed Ghana.gov.

Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia boasts about digitalization when he has no idea how these vital investments came about. He must understand that digitalization is not just about buying foreign software and installing them on infrastructure built by the NDC.

How can a Vice President lower himself to speakasifmerelybuying a mobile phone is all that is needed to make and receive mobile calls even if the telecommunication companies have not built critical cell sites?

How can Bawumia compare licensing private entities laying fibre to the actual investment done by the JM led NDC, in the laying of altogether over 1,500km fibre optic cable and all the other projects and systems put down by previous NDC administrations?

The complete lack of vision of Dr Bawumia led economic team can be seen in the way they spoke a lot about making a shift towards export yet have supervised the situation where importation has rather reached astronomical levels.

The paucity of vision can alsobe seen in the shocking fact that very little has been done by this government to increase the power generation capacity of Ghana –a vital prerequisite for any economic transformation.

It takes a visionary leader like JM to setup ESLA Fund, Ghana Exim bank, get GPHA and Ghana Airport Company to build great balance sheets and leverage such to raise billions of dollars for massive expansion.

In doing so, John Mahama was showing he was ahead of the curve and if Bawumia had any humility, he would have learned and not superintended over the most monumental and reckless borrowing which has today, brought Ghana the shame of not being able to pay her debt and reduced us to an object of ridicule all over the world.

In addition,it was Mahama’s vision and toil that yielded 960,000 metric tonnes of cocoa production. Today, cocoa production has declined to below 500,000mt. How this clueless and visionless Bawumia can even have the audacity to boast about bold solutions beggars belief. We submit to you thatBawumia hasamassivevisiondeficitand cannot be compared to Mahama in any way, shape or form.

    2. Responsibility Deficit

A true leader takes responsibility for his words and works. He does not take the credit for good things done and seek to blame others for the things that are not good. President Mahama took over from President Mills. He could have chosen to create the impression that the single spine salary policy, the implementation of which, caused massive problems for the economy, was a policy he disagreed with. Instead, like a true leader who has honour, truth and sense of responsibility, he took full responsibility for all previous decisions and braved the storms that the single spine brought –particularlythe storm which led to about 70% of all our taxes being used for public sector wages in 2013. It was this expenditure storm that John Mahama described in the analogy of the meat being down to the bones which the Bawumia led NPP deliberately continues to misrepresentas economic mismanagement.

Dr Bawumia is running away from what he clearly views as not very good policies of the very government he serves in as Vice President.

Has he even had the humility to apologize to the country for those policies? John Mahama demonstrated a high sense of responsibility. Bawumia demonstrates he has a massive Responsibility Deficit.

Such a person does not have the character to lead our nation.

If Bawumia has shown that he can literally stab Nana Akufo-Addo in the back by way of running away from poor policies while taking credit for the good things done, who else is Dr Bawumia not able to betray and throw under the bus? If youcan betray the man who overlooked other very qualified party officials to pick you an outsider who was not even a party person as running mate, then no one is safe under Bawumia. A Judas cannot be entrusted with the leadership of Ghana.

President John Dramani Mahama took full responsibility for Dumsor even though Dumsor was neither caused by him nor President Mills but has been the problem of successive governments failing to ramp up energy supply to match up with the demand. President John Dramani Mahama blamed nobody and went ahead and resolved the energy crisis, one whole year before he left office.

What has been the reaction of Bawumia to the unprecedented economic collapse? What he cannot blame Nana Akufo-Addo for, he will find another scapegoat –COVID-19 cum Russia-Ukraine war and President John Dramani Mahama. Do not be surprised if very soon he blames COVID-19, Russia-Ukraine war and Mahama for the Black Stars’ catastrophic AFCON performance in Cote d’Ivoire.

Ladies and gentlemen, COVID-19 came along in the year 2020. However, the economic problems began as early as 2019 when budget deficits reached 7%, when the cedi depreciated by nearly 13%, when Debt to GDP started rising sharply –Debt to GDP was already above 60%.

This failure to take responsibility shows Dr Bawumia has not got the humility to accept when he is wrong. If you cannot take responsibility for your poor policy decisions which antedated COVID, Ghana cannot be safe in your hands.

    3. Credibility Deficit

If there is a single area where Alhaji Bawumia has the biggest character deficit, it is the arena of credibility and trustworthiness. And we all know the critical value of trustworthiness in life and in leadership in particular. A few rhetorical questions will suffice.

    How can you be trusted:

When you proclaim yourself as the leader of a Solid Economic Management Team and yet land the economy in the total collapse we see today?

When you proclaim in 2012 that when the fundamentals are weak, the exchange rate will expose you, only to turn around in 2019 when the currency was fast depreciating that you made that statement rather in 2014 when the fundamentals were weak when the records show that you made the statement in 2012 at a time thefundamentals were relatively stronger?

When you proclaim that you will move the economy from taxation to production only to heap myriads of taxes on suffering citizens?

When you proclaim that your so-called solid economic management team has stabilized the cedi/dollar rate and locked the dollar and left the padlock with the IGP only for the cedi to break jail right from 2019 when it depreciated by nearly13% and now pushing towards 13 Cedis to the dollar?

When you boasted that under your economic leadership, Ghana will see growth and growth and growth and jobs and jobs and jobs only for Ghana to experience unprecedented levels of unemployment in recent memory?

When you boldly claimed that no village or community in Ghana will have water or toilet problem within the first 18 months of being elected?

When you still claim in February 2024 that Dumsor was fixed by you when you yourself admitted back in 2016 in the premises of Multimedia that John Mahama fixed Dumsor but should not be praised?

When you declared, we don’t have to borrow for roads, the money is here. All we need to do is to toll the roads and we will get money to build all the roads we need”?

When you promised that all SHS students will receive free tablets in the year, 2023?

When you deliberately lie to the people of Cape Coast in 2020 that a brand new harbour was being built for them?

When on your own freewill, you promised that the NPP government will start constructing roads with concrete instead of asphalt?

When you promised the construction of 16 model schools for Zongo communities in all the 16 Regions (in the presence of His eminence, the National Chief Iman)?

The examples of the deliberate lies are too numerous to exhaust.

Friends from the media, on the issue of the NPP flagbearer’s deceptive promise to scrap some taxes, let us critically examine the obtuse logic that he is canvassing.

Essentially, this is what he is saying to the people of Ghana:

“I know that together with President Akufo-Addo we have imposed several draconian taxes on you, but endure them for the next ten months while I continue in office as Vice President on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party and as Chairman of the Economic Management Team.”

After enduring the hardships imposed on you by my government and party, you can vote for me to be President on the ticket of the NPP, and I promise to scrap just three of the about 40 taxes we have imposed on you in the last eight years.”

Think seriously about this, ladies, and gentlemen.

This is why we insist that a vote for Bawumia is in reality just a third term for Akufo-Addo.

Ladies and gentlemen, this so called promise comes from the same men who have used flattery to deceive you with their promise to move Ghana from taxation to production. The Vice President’s previous promises to reduce the tax burden on Ghanaians, not to tax our mobile money wallets, and to lower import duties on spare parts are just a few of the promises that have turned into lies. This same man suddenly thinks Ghanaians have a short memory and is once again promising to scrap taxes to hoodwink the Ghanaian electorate.

Should we remind him that Ghanaians still remember his instrumental role in crafting the obnoxious E-levy policy, as was confirmed publicly by the then Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and Mr. John Boadu, their former General Secretary?

We still remember his important role in the recent IMF negotiations. His actions have resulted in the implementation of the Emissions Levy, which many consider useless, and the imposition of VAT on previously exempt items.

We in the NDC have always opposed the draconian taxes imposed on Ghanaians by the insensitive Akufo-Addo and Bawumia government. We and our gallant Members of Parliament have always stood on the side of the suffering Ghanaian people and businesses.

Our advice to the Vice President is that if he has indeed turned a new leaf and has seen the light, like Saul on his way to Damascus, he should show genuine contrition by first apologising to Ghanaians and then join the NDC to scrap these taxes now and not in the future. The Ghanaian people cannot live through another day of these suffocating taxes, let alone ten good months.

The time to scrap the crippling and draconian taxes that the NPP has imposed on suffering Ghanaians is now!

How is it possible to trust a Vice President who has shown no penitence or remorse about deliberately lying and conning the people of Ghana. A man who believes that leaders can continue to fool all the people all the time.

A man whose words cannot be trusted, is a man who is not FIT to lead!

Who will entrust his business in the hands of a man who cannot be trusted to tell the truth? If it is terrible to entrust a private property or business into such a hand, imagine the greater tragedy of committing Ghana and her 30 plus millions of citizens and her future into the hands of a Man whose words are worth very little and who does not understand the meaning of Credibility and Trustworthiness.

    4. Gratitude Deficit

A true leader acknowledges the contributions of his predecessors. True leadersunderstand that leadership is like a relay race and he or she builds the new by acknowledging and appreciating what contribution was handed over to him. Mills/Mahama led NDC acknowledged that the N1 Highway was the accomplishment of the Kufuor led NPP even though the entire work was virtually done during the tenure of Mills/Mahama.

Mills/Mahama led NDC similarly did not take any credit for the building of the Bui Dam even though their administration even borrowed additional money to see to the completion of the project.

When eventually the Bui Dam was being commissioned, President Kufuor was invited and duly acknowledged as the leader whose government secured the finance for the dam. This gratitude is a mark of a secure leader. Bawumia sadly also has massive gratitude deficit.

It takes someone who does not show gratitude:

To claim that the Tema to Akosombo (now Mpakadan) rail line was the achievement of the NPP government when all records show that the financing was secured in 2016, one year before the Nana Addo/Bawumia came into office. Cabinet and Parliamentary approvals were also fully finalized before John Mahama left office in January of 2016.

To claim that Dumsor was not resolved before the coming of the NPP in 2017 when Bawumia himself publicly declared that John Mahama should not unduly be happy for solving the energy crisis because he was the one who brought it in the first place. Nana Poku of the NPP, an energy expert, publicly stated that JM led NDC solved the problem of Dumsor.

To claim that the NPP government introduced the online passport application system when the truth is that the online application system was launched under John Mahama in December 2016.

To claim that the card was nothing to write home about until Jan 7, 2017. Dr Bawumia deliberately ignoring the significant contributions of the NDC/Mahama administration in developing the GhanaCard system to what it is today. That by 2016, the Mahama administration had: Passed the law that makes the Ghana Card the sole document for identification purposes for any transaction (L.I 2111); Collected biometric and demographic data on about 16 million Ghanaians; Processed about 4.7 million cards; Distributed about 900,000 cards; Procured 9 million blank cards

Upon assumption of office in 2017, Dr. Bawumia constituted a three-man committee headed by Prof. Ken Attafuah, to review the contract and implementation of the Ghana Card system.

The committee established the facts enumerated above which is containedon page one (1) of the report and recommended the use of the existing database to continue from where the NDC left off. Indeed, the NIA boss Prof. Ken Attafuah told Parliament that the contract that was signed by the NDC/Mahama administration with the Margins Group, is the same contract that is being implemented today.

Clearly, this government only came to continue the implementation of a system that had already been developed by the NDC/Mahama government, as a continuation of what was started under President Kufour and continued by President Mills of blessed memory. The Ghana card credit must therefore be shared by all successive governments who have contributed to where we are today. Bawumia does not even credit his boss, Akufo-Addo.

Even though he is indisguise just a third term of NanaAddo, we need to call him for trying to play a fast one on the nation by conveniently throwing his boss under the bus. We see your game and will not be fooled.

If Dr Bawumia finds it difficult to acknowledge and show gratitude to what a predecessor government has done, why isGhana surprised that he pretends not to know the following solid accomplishments that he and Nana Akuffo Addo inherited upon coming into office:

Sinking Fund that had $250m for the repayment of the remainder of the first Eurobond ($750 million) Ghana contracted under Kufour.

Ghana Infrastructure and Investment Fund of $270m

Stabilization Fund of $250m which the government fell on when COVID broke in2020.

ESLA Fund of 3 billion Cedis per year;Cocoa output of 960k Metric Tons

    Gross international reserves of $6.2b

    Balance of Payment Surplus

Two new oil fields that accounted for the 8% growth the NPP chalked in 2017

Ghana Exim Bank that becamethe vehicle to fund its 1D1Fs

The Canadian Finance to the Agric Sector that NPP used for the Planting for Food and Job

The Buffer Stock that became crucial for the planting for food and jobs

$637 million of the $937 million IMF deal was inherited and drawn down by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government

The massive stock of energy infrastructure, Health infrastructure, educational, transport, and water infrastructure-in short the biggest legacy of infrastructure bequeathed to any administration in the history of the 4th republic and possibly the most since independence.

An ungrateful person calls all the above an economic mess left behind.

What a massive Gratitude Deficit. Bawumia is clearly not fit for leadership. John Mahama’s ability to acknowledge what work was previously done makes him very fit for leadership.

    5. Competency Deficit

Competence must be the hallmark of a true leader. He must possess the capacity to accomplish a lot even with minimal resources. That is exactly what Ghana saw when John Mahama was in charge of the economic management team and later became the president of the republic.

It takes competence to bring inflation from 21% down into single digit and keep it consistently there for 33 long months-the longest period in the 4th republic and possibly since independence.

Incompetent Bawumia as head of economic management team, could barely keep inflation in single digit for any appreciable period and supervised same going all the way up to 54%, when all over Africa, no serious country experienced any such level of inflation.

It takes competence to accomplish the record of high growth ghana saw under JM as head of the economic management about team. 8% in 2010 before oil. 14% in 2011 with non-oil standing at 8%. Another 9% in 2012 as well.

The highest growth rate under Bawumia was fully attributable to the two oil fields handed overto the NPP by the Mahama led NDC.

It takes competence to achieve cocoa output of 1 million MT as seen in the year 2011 and almost repeated by the agric sector in 2016 under JM. Under incompetent Bawumia, cocoa production is now about half of that quantum.

It takes competence to get a B+ rating that Ghana recorded in 2012 when John Mahama was head of the economic management team. Under incompetent Bawumia, our rating is now D-Junk status.

An Absolute Disgrace! A proud nation brought onto her knees by a Disastrous Economic Management team led by a man who talks big but delivers very little.

In 8 years when he served as head of economic management team and president, total debt accrued stood at about 110b cedis, from about 10b at close of 2008 to 120b at the close of 2016. With this relatively small quantum of resources, Ghana can point to arguably the most massive infrastructure investments seen in our country in the 4th republic. In the whole of 2016, not even one cedi was received from the BOG, yet inflation was brought down to 15.4%, T. Bill rate down to 16%, Debt to GDP stood at 57%, Non-oil GDP was 4.3%, budget deficit at 6.1%, capital expenditure as a percentage of GDP at 4.2%, while the cedi depreciated by only 9.6%. It was in that same year, that the foundations were established for the 8% GDP growth NPP came to inherit in 2017; incidentally the highest growth of their 8-year mandate. Growth has never come close to that since 2017.

Contrast this level of competence with the tragic incompetence of the “Big Talking” Bawumia.

Between July 2020 to Dec 2020 alone, the Bawumia led economic team accessed not less than 30 billion cedis resource during Covid. That alone represents virtually the whole of borrowing done in the first four years of the Mills/Mahama government when the foundations were laid for the astronomical legacy of infrastructure investment we see today. The 30 billion cedis represents a little over one third of the total debt accruedin eight long years of the Mills/Mahama administration. Despite getting this collosal amount when it was just leftwith 6 months to end their first term, the Bawumia led group managed to achieve zero GDP growth; left an unprecedented budget deficitof 15% when the rest of africa did not see this level of economic and fiscal calamity.

The economy never recovered from this level of recklessness; no wonder we have subsequently seen Debt rising to over 600 billion cedis; inflation hitting 54%, debt to GDP over 100% which have stripped us completely naked and now left Ghana crawling before international investors like dust eating earthworms. The Crowning Shame of the much-acclaimed Solid Team under the so-called economic messiah! Tweaaaaa!!!!!!!!

    6. Experience Deficit

Need I say more? It is a notorious fact that John Dramani Mahama is the experienced, tried and tested visionary nation builder and leader Ghana needs to fix the messy and avoidable socioeconomic hardship and pain the NPP government has visited on Ghanaians.

Therefore, Ghanaians cannot wait to sack this incompetent and clueless NPP government from office on December 07.

The NPP has done enough damage to families through the destruction of livelihoods (Financial Haircuts, unprecedented unemployment etc.)

There is no time for Trial and Error, because Ghana is in a deep hole and Ghanaians are suffering. Ghanaians opted for A “Try Me” candidate and Running mate in 2016 and the verdict has been catastrophic.

Ghanaians already know that John Mahama as Chairman of the Economic Management Team under President Atta Mills achieved single digit inflationary rate for over 30 continuous months and a GDP of over 14% in 2011.Even when the economy faced serious head winds, President Mahama quickly restored the economy to good health such that Ghana’s economy was predicted to grow and did grow at above 7% in 2017. Three (3) active oil producing fields. Notethat John Mahama had access to revenue from only one oil field. Nevertheless, he handed over revenuefrom three (3) oil fields because Mahama added two more fields (TEN and Sankofa) before he left office. This is what experience and vision does and this is the experience Mahama is bringing to address the challenges Ghana is facing.

Ladies and gentlemen, the economy the NPP inherited from the experienced John Dramani Mahama in 2017, provided 100% funding of Government’s budget, without recourse to the Eurobond market. But by 2018, the economy came under pressure due to NPP’s economic mismanagement. As a result, they resorted to borrowing from the Eurobond market until the economy gave up the ghost. This is what led the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme – the cruel haircuts.

The Cedi is currently exchanging for US$1 to GhC12.6 when it was just GHC4.2 in John Mahama’s time due to Mahama’s prudent and innovative management of the economy. The national debt has ballooned from GHC120billion to over 600 billion Ghana cedis.

Fellow Ghanaians, we need a man with vision and experience to fix the mess. John Dramani Mahama is that man with theexperience requiredto fix this mess and take Ghana to the next level of progress and prosperity.

The Illusion of Change – Akufo Addo’s Government Reshuffle

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Press,

Just before this presser, news of a supposed government reshuffle came in, and we must say we are once again highly disappointed in this government. Even though disappointment in this government has become the norm, we were at least expecting some level of change amidst Dr. Bawumia’s promise to govern Ghana with only 50 ministers. But what do we see? A continuation of the status quo that has plagued our nation’s progress.

In an era where the clamor for efficient governance and fiscal prudence has never been louder, the recent reshuffle by President Akufo-Addo starkly reflects a government in disarray, obstinately disconnected from the realities of its people. Despite the vociferous appeals from Ghanaians, civil society, the clergy, academicians, and think tanks to trim the bloated size of government—a glaring drain on our nation’s scarce resources—this administration has once again turned a deaf ear.

The insistence on maintaining a government apparatus comprising so many ministers is not only a slap in the face to the Ghanaian taxpayer but a testament to an entrenched culture of profligacy, cronyism, and a disturbingly myopic view of governance. This unwieldy government size, under the guise of facilitating development, has instead catalyzed an era marked by inefficiency and unfulfilled promises.

Enter Dr. Bawumia, the Vice President and the freshly minted flagbearer for the NPP, who now promises a government of only 50 ministers. This pledge starkly contrasts the current administration’s excesses and ringshollow in the face of his longstanding defense of this governmental bloat. Dr. Bawumia’s sudden pivot, amidst the economic turmoil our nation endures, is emblematic of a desperate ploy for votes—a deception that the Ghanaian people can see through with clarity.

Today’s reshuffle by President Akufo-Addo, rather than offering a beacon of hope for a leaner, more efficient government, has instead upheld the status quo. It is a profound disappointment and a missed opportunity to heed the people’s calls for change. This action—or rather, inaction—underscores a blatant disregard for the nation’s plea for governance that puts the people’s welfare above political expediency.

It is particularly disheartening to witness the recycling of ministers who, over the past seven years, have demonstrated a stark inability to propel our nation forward. This reshuffle, far from being a strategic realignment, is merely a superficial rearrangement of pieces on a board, with no real intent to address the systemic failures that plague our governance.

Dr. Bawumia’s slogan, “It Is Possible,” now begs the question: If indeed it is possible, why not now? Why the wait, if not for political convenience at the expense of national welfare? This reshuffle could have been a moment of bold leadership, a signal of a genuine commitment to reform. Yet, it stands as a testament to a government marking time, lacking the vision or the will to implement the drastic changes Ghana so urgently requires.

As the NDC, under the distinguished leadership ofHis Excellency John Dramani Mahama, we reaffirm our commitment to the people of Ghana—a commitment to deliver governance that is not only efficient and lean but also transparent, accountable, and responsive to the needs of every Ghanaian.

The December 7th elections present an opportunity for the people of Ghana to voice their verdict on this administration’s failures. It is a chance to embrace a future under a leader who not only understands the gravity of the challenges we face but possesses the proven track record, the integrity, and the vision to overcome them.

This reshuffle, much ado about nothing, underscores the urgent need for change—a change towards a government that respects its mandate to serve, not to squander. A government of action, not merewords. The NDC stands ready to usher in this new dawn for Ghana

    CONCLUSION

Ladies and gentlemen, as we have laid bare before you today, the choice we face in the upcoming elections is not merely a choice between two individuals. It is a choice between two futures. On one hand, we have the path that perpetuates the status quo, a third term for Nana-Addo marked by unfulfilled promises and a vision that falls short of our grandest dreams. On the other, we have the path championed by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama—a path that promises to rekindle the flame of hope, to rebuild the foundations of our great nation, and to propel us into a future where every Ghanaian, regardless of their background, can dream of a better tomorrow and see that dream become a reality.

John Mahama’s vision for Ghana is not just a series of policies and promises. It is a call to action—a call to believe in the possibility of change, to remember the strength that lies in our unity, and to recognize the power of our voices and our votes to shape the destiny of our country.

Therefore, I stand before you, not just as the General Secretary of the Great NDC, but as a fellow citizen of Ghana, to issue a clarion call to every Ghanaian: let us rally behind a leader who has demonstrated time and again his commitment to our welfare, his dedication to our progress, and his unwavering resolve to lift Ghana to new heights of glory.

Let this election be more than just a political contest. Let it be a referendum on the kind of Ghana we want to build for ourselves and for generations yet unborn.

Let us choose hope over despair, action over inaction, and progress over stagnation. Let us choose John Dramani Mahama, a leader who embodies the best of our values, our aspirations, and our dreams.

With 297 days to go until the Presidential and Parliamentary elections, let every conversation, every debate, and every moment be an opportunity to advocate for a vision of Ghana that is rooted in progress, inclusivity, and justice. Let us work tirelessly, not just to secure a victory for John Mahama, but to secure a victory for every Ghanaian who dreams of a better tomorrow.

Fellow Ghanaians, your vote is your voice. It is the most powerful weapon you wield in the fight for your future. On December 7, 2024, I urge you to vote for John Dramani Mahama. But beyond casting your vote, I urge you to become an ambassador of change, to spread the word, to ignite the hearts of your neighbors, friends, and family with the promise of what Ghana can become under the leadership of a man who has not just the vision, but also the experience, the integrity, and the heart to lead us forward.

Together, let’s make history. Together, let’s choose a future that reflects our highest ideals and aspirations. Together, let’s vote for John Dramani Mahama and, in doing so, let’s take the first step towards building a Ghana that shines as a beacon of hope, prosperity, and unity for all of Africa and the world.

And finally, when you cast your vote for John Mahama and our parliamentary candidates on December 7th, dear fellow Ghanaians, rest assured that every single vote will be accounted for. We are committed to ensuring that your votes are not only counted but also

fiercely protected. Your voice matters, and together, we will safeguard the integrity of our democratic process.

The time for action is now. The future is in your hands. Let’s rise up and make it a reality.

God bless you all, and God bless our beloved Ghana.

Afenyo Markin tipped to be Majority Leader as NPP braces for reshuffle – Reports

Reports from a pro-government news outlet suggest that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is poised to undergo significant changes in its leadership within Parliament. According to the Daily Guide newspaper, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in consultation with party leadership, is scheduled to meet next Monday to finalize alterations to the Majority Caucus leadership.

This impending reshuffle marks the second major shakeup in the government, following the ministerial changes announced on February 14, 2024. As the reshuffle unfolds, expectations are high for further adjustments and appointments within the Majority Caucus, with Alexander Afenyo-Markin emerging as a likely candidate for the position of Majority Leader, as per the Daily Guide’s report.

If appointed, Afenyo-Markin would also assume the role of Minister of Parliamentary Affairs following the necessary vetting processes. This transition would see him succeed Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the current Majority Leader, who is departing Parliament after nearly three decades of service.

Earlier speculations had hinted at Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s potential appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs, replacing Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, who was reportedly vying for the role of Commonwealth Secretary-General. However, Ayorkor Botchwey has retained her position, leaving Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s next portfolio uncertain. Rumors suggest that he may join the campaign team of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

In another development, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the current Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip, has been nominated as Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources. This nomination implies that Alhassan will vacate her current parliamentary role, leading to speculation about her successor.

The anticipated leadership changes within the NPP’s Parliamentary Caucus come at a critical juncture, with the party gearing up for the upcoming general election. The reshuffle underscores the party’s commitment to strategic realignment and effective governance as it navigates the political landscape leading up to the polls.

As stakeholders await official announcements from President Akufo-Addo’s meeting next Monday, the political arena is abuzz with speculation regarding the implications of these leadership adjustments on the party’s parliamentary agenda and electoral prospects.

  • NPP General Secretary defends Akufo-Addo’s latest reshuffle; says 10 months is enough to make an impact

NPP General Secretary defends Akufo-Addo’s latest reshuffle; says 10 months is enough to make an impact

General Secretary of Ghana’s governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has defended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s decision to reshuffle his ministers just ten months before the upcoming general election.

Frimpong contends that despite criticisms suggesting the reshuffle came too late to have any significant impact in an election year, the move still holds value.

Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story on February 14th, Frimpong addressed the timing of the reshuffle, stating, “In political life, 10 months is a long period.”

He cited examples of swift achievements by past appointees shortly after their appointments, highlighting the importance of evaluating the vision and innovations brought forth by the new appointees.

Frimpong urged Ghanaians to closely monitor the performance of the newly appointed ministers in President Akufo-Addo‘s administration, emphasizing that their actions and outcomes will be crucial factors in assessing their effectiveness.

He maintained that the timeframe leading up to the December 7th elections is sufficient to gauge the impact of the reshuffle and determine whether the new appointees have delivered on their mandates.

The General Secretary also addressed his previous call for a reshuffle, which he made on December 22nd during the party’s annual Thanksgiving Service. Despite the delay in action by President Akufo-Addo, Frimpong expressed satisfaction with the timing of the reshuffle, stating that the President acted appropriately amidst prevailing challenges.

He likened the situation to navigating a crisis, emphasizing the importance of waiting for the right moment to make changes for the betterment of the country.

Frimpong reassured the public that it was not too late for the reshuffle, asserting that ten months provided ample time for the newly appointed ministers to demonstrate their competence and contribute positively to the government’s agenda.

President Akufo-Addo’s reshuffle, announced on February 14th, saw nine appointees reassigned, with the most notable change being the reassignment of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta. The reshuffle comes amid heightened political activity as Ghana prepares for the general election scheduled for December 7th.

  • Netanyahu promises to continue Rafah offensive

Netanyahu promises to continue Rafah offensive

The leader of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, says his soldiers will keep moving toward the city of Rafah in Gaza, even though others are asking them to stop.

French President Emmanuel Macron was telling Mr Netanyahu that the human cost of Israel’s operation in Gaza was too high. He warned him to stop it.

However, Netanyahu has told his army to get ready for a land attack.

Around 14 million Palestinians are living in the city of Rafah, and it has already been attacked.

Mr Netanyahu promised to continue with a strong attack and said that Hamas, the group in charge of Gaza, needs to be removed from the southern city.

“We will keep fighting until we win and we will also take strong action in Rafah after we let the civilians leave the battle areas,” he said.

President Macron called Mr. Netanyahu on Wednesday and said that Israel’s actions in Gaza need to stop.

He said that France is strongly against Israel attacking Rafah. He thinks it would cause a big humanitarian disaster.

The leaders of Australia, Canada, and New Zealand are very worried about a military operation in Rafah. They think it would be very bad.

“We ask the Israeli government not to choose this way,” the statement said. It added, “If they expand the military operation, it will be very bad for the Palestinian people. ”

The German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who was in Israel, said that the people in Rafah who have nowhere to go cannot just disappear out of nowhere.

Spain and the Republic of Ireland, who are members of the EU, have requested a quick review to see if Israel is following its human rights duties in Gaza, as stated in a trade agreement.

The health ministry in Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, says that at least 28,576 people, mostly women and children, have been killed because of Israel’s attack.

Israel decided to do something after gunmen led by Hamas killed at least 1,200 people and took 253 hostages in a sudden attack on its land on 7 October.

During the start of the war, Israel told Palestinians to go to Rafah for safety while the Israeli military fought in the northern cities.

Rafah is at the bottom of Gaza and has a crossing into Egypt where humanitarian help can go into the area.

Now, Israel wants people to move to a safe area called a “humanitarian zone” along the coast called al-Mawasi. This area is mainly used for farming.

One of the people who had to leave their home in Rafah was Ahlam Abu Assi. She told the news agency AFP that she would rather stay in Rafah, even if it meant she might die there, than go back to the terrible conditions her relatives in Gaza City had to endure.

“My son and his kids don’t have any food to eat. ” “They make a little bit of rice and keep it for tomorrow,” she said.

Another city called Khan Younis has been the main area where Israel has been concentrating its military operations in the southern part of Gaza.

Many Palestinians who had to leave their homes went to the Nasser hospital for safety. Now they are being told to leave there too.

Mr Netanyahu said he will continue despite the peace talks involving officials from the US, Israel, Egypt, and Qatar not reaching a conclusion.

The leader of Israel said that Hamas did not offer anything new for a hostage deal, and Israel will not agree to the militant group’s unreasonable requests.

It said that if Hamas changes its positions, the negotiations can make progress.

  • Gabby lauds ‘competent’ Amin Adam’s appointment as Finance Minister

Gabby lauds ‘competent’ Amin Adam’s appointment as Finance Minister

Staunch member of the New Patriotic Party and a cousin of the President, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has weighed in on the appointment of a new finance minister.

The reshuffle saw Mohammed Amin Adam named as the replacement for Ken Ofori-Atta, who had served as finance minister for seven years.

In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Gabby praised Amin Adam’s appointment, stating, “Congratulations to Amin Adam. Ghana’s President couldn’t have found a more prepared, competent, humble, and politically-conscious replacement to take control of the country’s finances than you.” He further noted the strong public approval garnered by Adam’s appointment.

Ken Ofori-Atta, who had been at the helm of Ghana’s finance ministry for an extensive period, has faced scrutiny amidst economic challenges. His departure from the finance ministry comes amid repeated calls for his resignation due to perceived economic headwinds during his tenure.

Amin Adam, prior to his elevation, served as Minister of State at the finance ministry, bringing with him a wealth of experience. His new role will see him overseeing the government’s ongoing negotiations with creditors as part of the US$3 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout programme.

Meanwhile, Ken Ofori-Atta has been reassigned to the position of presidential advisor, as reported by pro-government Asaase Radio. In this capacity, he will be tasked with handling international investments and capital markets, highlighting the government’s focus on leveraging external investments for national development.

The reshuffle marks a significant transition in Ghana’s economic leadership, with Amin Adam stepping into the role of finance minister amid expectations of addressing economic challenges and steering the country towards financial stability. Ofori-Atta’s new role underscores the government’s commitment to maximizing international partnerships for economic growth and development.

  • Kansas City shooting: 21 injured and one dead near Super Bowl parade

Kansas City shooting: 21 injured and one dead near Super Bowl parade

One person has been killed and 21 people were injured in a shooting in Missouri after the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade.

Authorities said they helped eight people who were in serious danger of dying right away and seven others who were hurt badly enough to possibly die.

Nine kids got hurt, but they are all expected to get better.

The police have caught three people they think are involved in the shooting.

The gunshots were heard near Union Station, the train station in downtown Kansas City. The parade had just finished there at 2:00 PM local time (8:00 PM GMT), and there were a lot of fans watching.

Local news said that the Kansas City Chiefs players were still on a stage when they heard the first shots.

The sound of the guns made everyone, including the mayor and his family, to run and hide.

Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said that the officers went to the area right after the gunshots and detectives started to investigate right away. The Fire Department quickly helped the injured people.

Officials said that over 800 police officers were already there to watch over the parade. The city’s firefighters were there to help with any injuries.

At a meeting on Wednesday, Chief Graves said 22 people were shot – one person died – and three people were taken into custody.

A radio station in the area said that one of their DJs, Lisa Lopez, was killed in the shooting.

The people who were still alive were taken to three nearby hospitals, officials said. The ones who were in very critical condition were taken to the hospital within 10 minutes of the shooting.

Nine kids between ages six and 15 are in the hospital with gunshot wounds. Chief nursing officer Stephanie Meyer is taking care of them.

“Ms Meyer said that the people we saw seemed scared when they came to us. ”

Local hospitals are also helping people who were hurt in the big rush after the shooting, even if they weren’t shot.

The city officials did not tell anyone the names of the people who were hurt. They also didn’t tell us anything about the people who got arrested, or what caused the shooting.

A police source told media, that the shooting seems to have happened because of a fight that got out of hand. The source said it was not connected to terrorism.

The police are trying to figure out why it happened and collecting evidence. They want anyone who saw anything or knows anything to talk to the police.

    A city is very sad.

Gunshots were heard while the city was having a party for the Kansas City Chiefs winning their second Super Bowl in a row. However, this less famous city in America missed out on its exciting and bringing together moment.

Kansas City’s mayor Quinton Lucas said he was at Union Station when he and others heard gunshots. He and his family started to run.

Mr Lucas said today we all went out in Kansas City to celebrate.

I went with my wife and I went with my mother. I never thought that today, Chiefs players, fans, and thousands of people would have to run for safety.

The Kansas City Chiefs said they are very sad about the violence on Wednesday. It also said that all its players, coaches, and staff, along with their families, were found and are safe.

Travis Kelce, who is a famous player on the team and known for his connection with Taylor Swift, posted on social media that he is very sad about the terrible event that happened today.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling, a Chiefs player, also posted on social media after the sad event. He said he wanted to talk to the young people who were hurt in the shooting.

“I want to make sure they are doing alright,” Mr Valdes-Scantling said. “I want to help them in any way I can and get them some things from the team to help them recover. ”

The mayor said the city is safe and wants people to think carefully about what to do next. Even though there were many police officers there, he said this still happened because some people with guns were up to no good.

In a statement, US president Joe Biden talked about the problem of gun violence in the country.

“He said today’s events should make us do something about gun reform and banning assault rifles in the US. “

In a session held in Parliament, the Speaker stressed the urgency of the situation and directed the leadership of the House to expedite the process of approving a new appointment committee to enable a fast-track vetting process for new ministerial appointees.

Speaker Bagbin, acknowledging the significance of the reshuffle, emphasized the need for swift action to ensure a seamless transition.

“Hon Members, the nominations are accordingly referred to the appointments committee for consideration and report. Leadership of the House, you’re hereby called upon to submit the recomposed committees immediately for the consideration of the committee on selection.

The decision was announced on Wednesday, February 14, 2024.

One of the headline changes in this Valentine’s Day ministerial shuffle is the replacement of the controversial Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta. Ofori-Atta, who has faced criticism from within his party’s ranks, is set to be replaced by Dr. Mohammed Adam Amin Anta, MP for Karaga and a seasoned technocrat with extensive experience in the financial sector.

The reshuffle also includes Andrew Agyepa Mercer, the Deputy Minister of Energy and MP for Sekondi, who will assume the role of Minister of Tourism. Mercer’s appointment is seen as a positive step towards promoting Ghana as a top tourist destination and boosting the tourism sector.

Henry Quartey, a respected figure in the government, has been designated as the Interior Minister Designate, responsible for maintaining internal security and safeguarding the nation’s borders. He replaces Ambrose Dery, who decided not to stand for re-election.

Other key appointments include Ophelia Hayford Mensah as the Minister for Environment Science, Technology, and Innovation, Fatimatu Abubakar as the Information Minister, and Francis Asenso Boakye as the Roads and Highways Minister.

Cruise ships left Red Sea after attacks by Houthis

Cruise ships can’t go to the Red Sea because of the fighting in Yemen.

Carnival Corporation changed the course of 12 of its ships to go to a different area.

The ships are Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 and P&O Cruises’ Arcadia. They were supposed to go back to Southampton through the Suez Canal and Mediterranean.

Both ships will take an additional seven to 10 days to travel around the southern tip of Africa and then head home through the Atlantic.

Passengers will spend more time on the boat and less time visiting places they wanted to see, which they already paid for.

People who only booked the last part of the world cruises have had their trips cancelled.

Queen Mary 2 carries over 2,500 passengers, and Arcadia carries a little less.

A Cunard representative said the company is focused on keeping its guests and crew safe and healthy.

The person speaking said, “After considering recent events and talking to security experts and government officials, we have decided to change our route. ”

The Houthi rebels from Iran have been attacking ships in the Red Sea because they are angry about the Israel-Gaza conflict.

They haven’t attacked cruise ships yet, but they have been attacking navy ships and cargo ships.

Ships from Southampton usually go to sunny places during the winter and come back in March or April for the summer season in Europe.

Carnival Corporation, the biggest cruise company in the world, said it will have to spend more money on fuel because of changes to the cruise routes.

Val’s day: How various tribes and ethnic groups in Ghana express their love

Valentine’s Day, often referred to as Val’s Day, is a celebration observed on February 14 each year. It’s a day people express their affection and love for one another through gestures like giving gifts, sending cards, or spending quality time together.

It’s named after Saint Valentine, a Christian martyr who is associated with love and romance.

While it’s traditionally a day for couples, many people also celebrate by showing appreciation for friends and family. TIGPost went on the streets to sample the perspectives of Ghanaians on how love is expressed in their various tribes and ethnic groups. This is a taste of love brewed in Ghana! Enjoy!

    A Fante woman’s perspective

Maame Aba, said Fantes like her love to cook. As such, they love to express their love by cooking for their loved ones.

“Fante women love cooking so that is one of the ways we show love to our families and our significant others. And we also love words of motivation like telling you ‘you’re beautiful,’ ‘you are doing well so keep it up’ and we are also just caring. We are serviceable as well.

“Generally, we want to make sure you’re okay, find out if you need any assistance, very helpful. We always want to assist if you need any help,” she said.

    A Ga woman’s perspective

Naa Quaye, a Ga, also said expressing love ‘the Ga way’ is no different from how other ethnic groups in Ghana do. She said the people of Ga love surprises and love it when their significant others express their love by surprising them with gifts and others.

“So among the Ga people, we love surprises. If you love someone, one way you can express it is by buying the person gifts and providing the needs of the person because like i said, we love surprises,” she said.

    A Sandema woman’s perspective

Sandra Balami hails from Sandema, situated in the Upper East Region. According to her, the people of Sandema are known for their remarkable generosity and penchant for expressing affection through acts of kindness.

“The people of Sandema are very generous. We love expressing love by giving to others; so we cook and give some to our neighbors, we gift people goats, foodstuff, and others and I think this has really impacted me in a way.

“So on Val’s day I’ll get you [my partner] a thoughtful gift, it could be anything at all – a watch, clothes, shoes – or anything. We could go out, sit somewhere and spend some quality time together,” she said.

    A Bolgatanga man’s perspective

Benard Atanga, also from Bolgatanga in the Northern region, said people from where he hails from, express their love by gifting items to loved ones and going out as well. He said he would prefer to climax the day with a romantic night out with their partner.

    An Akuapem woman’s perspective

“Akuapems love showing off. They are the type who can announce to everyone that ‘this is my husband’ or ‘this is my wife.’ They really like showing off and on a day like this, my mum [an Akuapem] would throw a party for my dad. Buhari of Nigeria had his signature faked to obtain $6 million—Aide

Nigeria wants Interpol to help catch three people who they think stole $6. 2million from the central bank. They used a fake signature of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Officials think that the suspects planned with Godwin Emefiele, who used to be in charge of Nigeria’s central bank.

He is already in court for 20 charges, including getting$6. 2m

Mr Emefiele said he did not do anything wrong and is not in jail right now.

He is the most well-known former government official to be accused of taking bribes since President Bola Tinubu started working last year.

Prosecutors say that Mr Emefiele broke the law by allowing the money to be taken from the central bank vault.

Last December, he said that the accusations were completely untrue and were made up by the investigator to hurt his reputation. He asked for a complete and clear investigation.

Mr Emefiele’s supposed helpers are named Adamu Abubakar, Imam Abubakar, and Odoh Ocheme. Odoh Ocheme used to work for the central bank. This information was reported by the state-owned News Agency of Nigeria.

The police think the suspects have left Nigeria. They want Interpol to help catch them and send them back to Nigeria.

None of the three people accused of doing something wrong have said anything about the accusations.

The government told the police to arrest them on Tuesday night. This happened a few hours after Boss Mustapha, a former official in President Buhari’s government, spoke in Mr Emefiele’s trial.

Mr Mustapha said in court in Abuja that neither he nor Mr. Buhari had signed to allow the $6. 2million to be taken out.

“Looking at the signature, it is a faint attempt at reproducing [former] President Buhari’s signature,” Mr Mustapha was quoted as telling the court by the Nation newspaper.

When Mustapha saw the paper used to take out the money, he said it “did not come from the president’s office”, the newspaper reported.

The money was taken out in cash in January last year, a few months before Mr. Buhari finished his time in office.

Mr Emefiele became the head of the central bank in 2014 when Good luck Jonathan was the president. In2019, Buhari chose to keep him in that position.

Israel attacks Lebanon with “extensive” strikes

Israel attacked Lebanon a lot after a woman was killed and others were hurt in a rocket attack on northern Israel.

Lebanese news said that villages were attacked and buildings were burning.

Hezbollah hasn’t admitted to attacking Israel, even though they are believed to be responsible.

Both sides have been shooting at each other across Israel’s northern border since the attacks by Hamas on 7 October.

“Israel’s military planes started a lot of attacks in Lebanon,” said Daniel Hagari, spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces, on Wednesday.

Mr Hagari said that the IDF will share more information about its recent air strikes soon.

Lebanon attacked northern Israel and hit the Safed area. The attack targeted the Israeli military’s base in the north, the IDF reported.

A recording shows a rocket landing close to a hospital’s entrance.

Hezbollah is a group of Shia Muslims that has a lot of weapons and is one of the strongest non-government military groups in the world.

It started in the early 1980s by Iran to go against Israel.

  • “Race against time” to rescue labourers from mine in Turkey

“Race against time” to rescue labourers from mine in Turkey

Many rescuers are still looking for nine gold miners who disappeared after a landslide in eastern Turkey.

About 10 million cubic meters of dirt fell from a gulley onto the Copler mine site on Tuesday.

Four people, including the manager of the pit, have been taken into custody for investigation.

There is also worry that harmful chemicals could escape from the area and cause a bigger environmental problem.

Former Turkish leader Binali Yildirim went to the mine and said that some workers got away when the ground fell, but they can’t find nine workers.

“Mr Yildirim said that despite a big effort to act quickly, the conditions are not good for us to help because the incident is very serious. ”

Five workers are trapped in a container, three in a vehicle, and one in his truck at a different part of the site.

The Copler mine is one of Turkey’s biggest and is in Erzincan province, about 90km from the provincial capital Erzincan and over 600km east of Ankara.

While trying to rescue people, officials are also working to calm fears that cyanide and many other chemicals used in gold mining could move from the site into the nearby Euphrates River. This river goes into Syria and Iraq before flowing into the Persian Gulf.

Turkey’s environmental ministry is checking the Euphrates River for chemicals. They have not found any pollution yet.

The pipes that carry water from the stream to the river have been closed for safety.

Mehmet Torun, who used to be the president of the Chamber of Mining Engineers, told the BBC in Turkey that they warned about the gold mine many times.

Mr Torun said that a gold mine in Erzincan is very dangerous because it is close to an active fault line and only 300m away from the Euphrates River.

He said it was a really bad thing for the environment.

We are actually putting harmful substances into the river that has been supplying water to Mesopotamia for many centuries.

I want to think there is no leakage, but I’m not sure how sure we can be.

Binali Yildirim said the chemicals were kept in a different place from where the landslide occurred.

The group of Turkish engineers and architects, including the Chamber of Mining Engineers, want the Copler mine to be closed forever.

Attempts were made in 2022 to close it down after a poison gas leaked.

Anagold Mining company got a big fine of 16. 5 million Turkish lira (£428,000; $536,000) for breaking rules. But they can still keep the mine open.

SSR Mining, which partly owns Anagold, stopped making gold at the site after a landslide on Tuesday.

SSR’s shares, which are bought and sold on the New York and Toronto Stock Exchanges, went down by more than half in value on Tuesday.

In the past few years, there have been many accidents in Turkish mines. In 2022, 42 people died in a coal mine explosion.

  • Police to resume search for Muriel McKay’s remains

Police to resume search for Muriel McKay’s remains

A man met the person who killed his grandmother to try and find where her body was hidden. The police told him they will look for her remains next month.

Muriel McKay, who was 55 years old, was taken by force in 1969 because the kidnappers thought she was Rupert Murdoch’s wife at the time. They demanded £1 million in exchange for her release and kept her on a farm in Hertfordshire.

Last month, Mark Randolph Dyer and his mom went to Trinidad to meet Nizamodeen Hosein, the person who killed Muriel.

The police are still talking to the family.

Muriel McKay was married to Rupert Murdoch’s deputy Alick McKay. She was taken from her house in Wimbledon, London on December 29, 1969. She was kept on a farm close to Bishop’s Stortford.

Arthur and Nizamodeen Hosein were found guilty of kidnapping and killing someone. Arthur died in jail in 2009, while Nizamodeen was sent back to Trinidad & Tobago after he finished his punishment.

In an interview with BBC Three Counties Radio, Mr. Dyer said that the police have put together a new team and they are going to go back to the farm in March to arrest my grandmother, which is good news.

“They also said they are going to Trinidad the week after next to meet Nizamodeen Hosein and bring him back to England. ”

Mr Dyer, who is 59 years old, and his mother Dianne McKay, who is 83 years old, met Hosein last month. They said the meeting was hard but also went very well.

Mr Dyer said: “I’m sure that Nizamodeen Hosein wants us to have Muriel back. ” “It’s really hard to see someone being so honest about doing something so terrible. ”

He also said that the farm owner said he wants to help the police with their investigation.

Detective Superintendent Katherine Goodwin from The Met said: “Our detectives have met with Muriel’s family and other people to talk to them and collect information they found during their trip to Trinidad. ” We appreciate the time and help they gave us.

We will look at this information and decide what to do next in our investigation. We know that Muriel’s family is going through a hard time and we are still trying to find her body.

  • Cambodian youths advised not to “lose dignity” on Valentine’s Day

Cambodian youths advised not to “lose dignity” on Valentine’s Day

The authorities in Cambodia are advising young people to be careful on Valentine’s Day and not to engage in premarital sex in order to avoid losing their self-respect.

The education ministry told schools to stop any inappropriate activities on Valentine’s Day.

It said that the event was “not part of our Khmer culture. ”

In Cambodia, people think it’s wrong for women to have sex before they get married.

Valentine’s Day has become popular with young people in Southeast Asia. Many shops and street stalls sell flowers, like roses in pink and red wrapping, and heart-shaped items around this time.

But some people who like traditional things and don’t like change see Halloween as a foreign holiday that may harm the Buddhist culture of the country.

The Chbab Srey is a set of rules for women and girls in Cambodia to follow. It tells them how to act and behave. The UN says that women should be “good” and important in their homes.

The women’s affairs office is asking couples to celebrate Valentine’s Day in a better way because some people don’t understand what it really means.

The culture department asked parents and officials to remind kids to celebrate the day in a way that respects their honor and dignity, following the Khmer tradition.

Cambodia’s National Aids Authority said people should not have sex and should instead celebrate their love for family and friends.

Other countries have also had problems with 14 February in the past, not just Cambodia.

From 2008 to 2019, the religious police in Saudi Arabia said people couldn’t buy Valentine’s gifts like red roses because they thought it goes against their religion.

In India and Pakistan, some religious groups used to protest against Valentine’s Day, saying it disrespects Hinduism and Islam.

  • Friends to continue to review Rwandan bill

Friends to continue to review Rwandan bill

Friends are looking carefully at the government’s bill to keep Rwanda safe for another day on Wednesday.

The government wants to send some asylum seekers to Rwanda, but the Supreme Court said they can’t do that. Now the government is trying again with a new bill.

The Lords started arguing on Monday. Some people criticized the government for acting like “dictators”.

However, Lord David Cameron, the Foreign Secretary, said it would be “incorrect” for members of the House of Lords to “block” the plan.

The new law in the UK would say that Rwanda is a safe place. It would also let government officials ignore urgent court orders so they can start sending people back to Rwanda.

The new law being discussed in Parliament is trying to stop more court cases against the one-way flights. The Supreme Court said the flights were not allowed in November, but most MPs in the Commons supported them last month.

The prime minister has made it a top priority to stop people from crossing the Channel in small boats.

On Wednesday, there will be a second day of discussions in the House of Lords about a new law. Members will go through the details of the proposed law very carefully. They have almost 100 changes to think about.

After making changes to the bill, peers will get a chance to take a final vote before sending it back to MPs for more discussion.

On Monday, Baroness Chakrabarti, a member of the Labour party, said the bill is a danger to the laws within the country and the international rules that countries follow.

Lord Howard, who used to lead the Conservative party, said that the Supreme Court’s decision was just an opinion and that the government can ignore it if needed.

Tory peer Lord Tugendhat, who is related to security minister Tom Tugendhat, said that what we are being asked to do is similar to what dictators and autocratic leaders do, not what a well-established democracy like ours should do.

Lord Alton of Liverpool said that just because a law says Rwanda is safe doesn’t mean it really is.

Calling a dog a cat doesn’t make it a cat. It’s what you think, but it’s not right.

During a visit to Scotland, Lord Cameron said that Rwanda is a safe country and has made a lot of progress in recent years. They also take good care of many refugees in Rwanda.

We have to pass this law in Parliament and send some of these flights away to show that our country won’t tolerate a lot of illegal immigration.
